Starting point is 00:03:20 Balls. Spank Andy. Woo! S. D. P. P. The Steve Dangle Podcast.
Starting point is 00:03:29 With your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wild, and Jesse Blake. Let's go! Hey, so I do want to mention CJ Show Live in Coburg. Be there! Hey! Be there! Friday! At 1111 Elgin Street West, January 17th.
Starting point is 00:03:45 Doors at 5, show at 6, meet and greet at 7, and we will all be there as well. Very excited. If you want tickets to the CJ Show 300th Anniversary Show in Coburg, CJ's hometown, and hometown of Mr. Overtime Justin Williams. That's right, Mr. Game 7. You can look at it.
Starting point is 00:04:04 It's in the bio on this video or this app, depending upon how you consume this podcast. Orally. Okay. I just eat it. Every time the show comes out, I need a new device. It's very cool. I have to get it removed.
Starting point is 00:04:20 It's awesome. Thanks for putting it that way. You're welcome. Appreciate it. Leafs booed off the ice on Saturday night. First time in their history, and I'm talking going back to the 70s, that the Canucks have ever shut the Leafs out at home. Well, you know, I mean, in the Leafs' defense,
Starting point is 00:04:38 the Canucks had every tactical advantage, right? Well, so for anybody that doesn't know, going into this game, What challenges did the Canucks face? Guys were coming off of illnesses. They were coming off of injuries. Guys are playing hurt. Quinn Hughes is playing hurt, and he was probably the best player on the ice.
Starting point is 00:04:58 Their two stars don't like each other and have been involved in trade rumors for months that have been steadily heating up. They've been losing a lot of games recently, so many games that they are actually out of a playoff spot. um right now as we speak they played three games in four nights they did not look good during those three games in four nights they were on the second half of a back-to-back against the rested Leafs they were the road team the Leafs were the home team and the Canucks did not land
Starting point is 00:05:31 in Toronto until approximately 1 p.m uh in the afternoon um because they had flight issues so that probably screwed with their game day nap. I don't believe they got on the ice until warm-up. The Leafs had every fathomable advantage you could want heading into this game and got shut out on home ice, and it's unacceptable. It's completely unacceptable. I don't give a damn about the five straight wins,
Starting point is 00:06:01 then you get smacked by Carolina, blow a 2-0 lead. This is a game you have to win nearly every time. I know it's professional sports and you can't win every single time. You need to at least look like the better team in a loss. It needs to at least be a tight game. They couldn't make a pass. They couldn't put a shot through traffic. The shots were incredibly low in this one.
Starting point is 00:06:29 Even the Canucks didn't have a lot of shots. how do you the fact anyone defended them after that game like like actual gasp clutching pearls like i like i feel sick for you well have you considered that you and the people who are upset about the leafs effort in that game have you considered that you're just simply not being positive enough i'm gonna become the joker i'm actually gonna like like what if what if you could just be what if you're just not a real fan what if the leafs are criticized for daring to criticize the team that you cheer for and watch and devote so much time to what if the leafs have a complete absence of psychopaths you need psychos you need insane people you like what i said about matthew
Starting point is 00:07:14 chuck in that video is if he saw you at the side of the road with a flat tire he'd pull over get out of his car and pop your other three and then drive off um you need to have a bloodlust a bloodlust in this league i'll give you a great example that i didn't bring up in the lfr are the flyers good would you call them good i call them mid mid maybe even on the lower side lower mid lower middle mid they might lower middle class they might make it if they had some goaltending maybe they'd make it yeah yeah yeah i mean especially the bottom of the of the east right now it's not great so no you give them mackenzie blackwood yeah i bet they make the playoffs you you take back that fedotov contract and you do something else literally anything else
Starting point is 00:08:00 you know they they could do it anyway the reason i bring up the flyers how many games they're gonna lose this year like somewhere in the neighborhood 35 uh 35 like regulation and then overtime and all that so you know probably somewhere in the 40s right you're not going to win every game ducks come to town cut or go take we're going to get into that so don't go too far into it i'm not going to go too far into it but everything surrounding that game the atmosphere from puck drop is a metallica concert it is john tavaris returning to long island yeah and the fans understanding the moment and the team understanding the moment and the leafs start their backup goalie i'll never i'll never forgive babcock never um
Starting point is 00:08:49 the ducks the fans everyone in that building wearing orange except for the ducks oh sorry the Flyers and the fans not the Ducks every Flyer and Flyers fan understood the assignment for that game we're not losing this fucking game we're going to run them out of the building make them regret ever taking up the sport
Starting point is 00:09:12 Travis Konechny looked at Cutter Gauthier said I'll fucking fight you I told you not to get too I'm not going too deep he said all that what does he do 12 minutes of ice time no shots on goal he got four assists
Starting point is 00:09:27 and they won six nothing because you have to it has a love of blood needs to be part of your palate if you are gonna be successful if you are going to be relevant if you are going to be worth watching in this league the Leafs don't have it so I thought the dichotomy between what the new guys said that i just got here guys and the guy that's been here forever was interesting and i didn't bring that up in the video and i have a theory well it's because you're a wimp uh no i'm kidding i want to talk about that i want to talk about that i want to talk about that but but and jesse you were at these scrums we're going to play the mitch marner thing in a second but the tan of quote that made the rounds was not good enough they outworked us that's why they won
Starting point is 00:10:16 berube said a bunch of things but he also said we need more life and energy which i think we can all agree with right yeah these are things that were said yes uh and all and listen to satisfy me and my bloodlust matthews marner riley and tana have all came out and talked so those are leaders on the team that's great that's fantastic now the thing that that bothered people was the quote in text from mitch marner we have the video and everybody has the video too Everybody has the video, but it's exclusive. No, it's exclusive to us. We have obtained.
Starting point is 00:10:49 It's only our video, Jesse. We got CCTV footage. You can't watch this. You're not special enough, except for with us. No, this is on the Leafs YouTube channel, but it's the first minute of the scrum. That is all we need. Press play, please.
Starting point is 00:11:04 We good? Mitch, what made it hard to generate offense tonight? They did a good job around their net. Didn't create many opportunities. Our offense got to be way better. Create more offense for our team. What was missing on the power play tonight? Crispness.
Starting point is 00:11:19 We weren't just making easy plays. We were breaking them up. We've got to do a better job getting pucks around that net. That's how we score the last game. So we've just got to do a better job of finding lanes to get pucks to net and bodies there. How would you judge the effort level tonight on your guys' part? I liked it.
Starting point is 00:11:38 I mean, I thought we played well. I really did. You know, I think just the last couple games we've been giving up. and plays teams that aren't missing on him. So, you know, I thought we were a good five-man Titan in our zone. I thought we went to the neutral zone as a unit. I think when we didn't do that, that's when breakdowns happened, and they had a lot of offense off it,
Starting point is 00:11:58 and that's something that we talked about that we need to be better at, and, you know, we'll look at it going forward and fix it. So that's it. So, you know what? Most of what he said there is true. I think they played a somewhat good defensive game, right? They did go to the neutral zone together, right? which is something that this team many times last year did not but the thing that sticks out
Starting point is 00:12:18 obviously to you and obviously to everybody and jesse i'm gonna go to you first on this because i know steve is is ready to ready to jump on it but i want to go to jesse on this because you were there yeah now what was your reaction hearing that with a microphone in his face yeah no it's it's interesting because last what was it last friday last wednesday when we did like half an hour on like hey we got credentials now how does that feel and all that stuff and i talked about i'm there now and i'm standing next to these guys so there's like you can you feel the energy you know it's different watching something through the screen and and you're around them so you get a perspective there and with mitch marner at the beginning there you see where he says we're good
Starting point is 00:12:59 is because he was staying there for a little bit as they let in the reporters into the locker room a little late so he's standing there with the cameras while we're waiting for everybody to get there and then start asking him questions and you could sense that he doesn't take losing well because on nights when they're they're having fun and they win the game and mitch has a good night he there's there's a bubbly energy to him you know he's he's sometimes he's he's singing a tune on his way to the to the scrum or out of it and he's and he's having fun with all the guys there and you can see it in the locker room and then on nights like this you get answers that are that you you know that he's not satisfied with having to be there right now you know that he's
Starting point is 00:13:45 he's being a little impatient because he's not happy and at times i just i just don't know if he takes losing well and i think you can sense that there and you can definitely just feel it in his in his demeanor after losses when it's clear that the Leafs got outplayed it's very shut downy it's very I'm just here so I don't get fined um which is fine I don't I don't want a great player to take losing well no I'm okay with that you know what we one of the things that frustrates me about this group is sometimes we talk about them uh like last night's game is the only one that's ever happened. And so many guys in this team, so many important guys in the team have been here so long that we're able to draw from those things. And I actually found that
Starting point is 00:14:37 quote fascinating as an insight into how he views the game. So I, I think this guy is in a lot of respects a coach's dream because i'm willing to take marner's word for it on that one that they were executing well or at very least you know his game or his line uh whenever it was on the ice um i'm willing to take his assessment we were executing well we were doing this we were doing that we were doing that because i think when it comes to hockey he's extremely literal um i i think back to the um i think back to stop fucking crying bro just shoot it right so what that was if i'm not mistaken with willie and mitch and austin is they had the puck in the offensive zone against the bruins the play breaks down a little and mitch was upset when
Starting point is 00:15:43 he got to the bench because if i'm not mistaken willie and austin or one of them didn't do what the plan was hey we talked about this we have our system here's where you're all supposed to be and at least one of you wasn't there yeah and i think that's what mitch and austin were arguing about and willie's like just shoot it just shoot it like sometimes stuff breaks down and it doesn't work and that's why Mitch was frustrated and he threw his gloves and everything I believe him when he's like no no like I believe his viewing
Starting point is 00:16:18 of the game I believe that he genuinely believes that and he's not just because being pouty because on the defensive side of things guys the Leafs did limit them to 18 or 19 shots or whatever it was it was like not a it was not a high shot count it was not
Starting point is 00:16:34 high event but they did do much well and the first goal which turned out to be the game winner there's not much many goalies can do about that so there's two deflections but what where they didn't seem to execute was in the offensive zone so through two zones yeah he's right he's right yeah but that's that's not what i want to hear at that moment and mitch should be aware of that and you said like i i he's not you said i wanted i'm happy that guys aren't happy with losing right but there's there's a way to project that and you can have a piss poor attitude about
Starting point is 00:17:08 things or you can have i think what tana's perspective on it where he's unhappy in a different way than mitch and that's what you want out of the leaders of your team i think he tries to take the emotion out of his answers and he tries to take i think he tries to take the emotion out of his game because i think when mitch plays with emotion he plays poorly which which emotion i think when he plays when he plays with joy but last i noticed i i said to him hand to god said to my wife i'm like mitch is pissed tonight i don't know what's wrong but i could tell you can tell when you watch players enough when they're not having the best day whatever reason you could be things weren't working offensively yes yeah and you could tell
Starting point is 00:17:50 there was frustration on the bench and there's and that by the way is human and totally okay it's fine but i think when you talk about this quote because of course it gets pulled out and then it gets retweeted and then people start piling on or whatever and for whatever reason If people pile on Austin or people pile on Willie or even John Tavares, it's fine. When it's Mitch Marner, it's, well, the person piling on him is probably a bad person. I don't know where it came from with that, but I think Jesse and Steve in different ways are making a similar point, which is you got to know your intended audience here. He's not going to want to hear that.
Starting point is 00:18:25 And that is a pretty easy misstep to avoid. You want to talk to your assistant coach on offense about, hey, I thought we moved well through these two zones we just couldn't execute on this one it's like well okay that's trying to be positive in that moment like it's your job to talk about how poor you guys were offensively and not the success you had defensively because yeah that's that's where you lost the game like we're we're trying to we we asked you like hey how do you guys perform it's it's that part where it's lost and we're talking about a loss here like we don't care that the other parts of the zone or or make yourself the lightning rod like you well he doesn't need to be the lightning rod
Starting point is 00:19:05 no no well no you know what i don't give a shit you're you make 11 million dollars and you wear a letter be a lightning rod for your okay for the boys like what are you talking about i don't know if he needs that like that again again do you understand the industry you work but in theory in theory that that works yes but i think we've seen very clearly with this player that that does affect his game but i think it's real easy and i think people would respect it like damn i really followed up uh a game where i was minus six uh by getting shut out at home yes and that that is the context of the situation that really matters that is the yes and by the way that's the context that we're facing right now you won five straight great what you know what have you done and they
Starting point is 00:19:48 were they were negative one on the first shift right yeah after coming off a negative six negative of six negative five games and i'm like i'm not i'm not pinning it on him or anything um you know the riley conversation's getting loud um i i mean i didn't understand people putting that game on hill to be oh no like dude you didn't he should have at least one i would say the third goal the yeah the it was a great play by quinn hughes and he was doing a lot of dancing then to find sherwood and and him have that shot you gotta save it the other guy had a shutout you know other guy had a shut up it's it's the blue jays thing where it's like who cares about how their pitching is because if they score zero runs yeah the pitching staff allowed two or if they allowed 10 the game's still
Starting point is 00:20:31 the same if you didn't score any runs the leaves same thing with the leaves didn't earn the right to blame that game on hilda 100 you know what i mean hilda hasn't been great i think the he's been okay come see come yeah um a lot of uh a lot of gustafson shutouts where where you know it's like oh he played well except for the one or two terrible goals he allowed yeah i think he's sitting in in an 880 so far and there's been a lot of a lot of early goals but yes he's he's supposed to be the third string there's some six million dollar goalies who aren't giving you those numbers you can argue that the management here looked at him as the fourth string because they were hoping matt murray would have been able to step up and be the third string goalie so
Starting point is 00:21:10 um yeah you can't put this blame on hill to be it's it's on the guys yeah yeah um it it's uh i don't know it was a bit it was a bit tone deaf but i like i also appreciate his insight like it's one of those weird things i think this guy in terms of hockey iq people always talk about hockey iq is a savant like he's he's brilliant and i think we're getting a glimpse into his brilliant mind with that clip but in terms of i don't want to say emotional intelligence because that seems harsh that's not really what i'm looking for he's he's definitely not reading the room though yeah he's not reading the room does that make and this is where i want to bring it does that make a a couple of let's say it bad losses yeah feel a little bit worse right
Starting point is 00:22:01 like the thing the thing about the thing that i always respected about matt sundin or or even like lou lamorello or some of these guys that are perfect for dealing with the media even willie willie's good at it too which is i'm gonna say a bunch of sentences and nothing's gonna mean anything and and i think you know we ask for players to be honest um and i think being honest as it as with anything in media or social media requires some some talent and some tricks you can't be a hundred percent honest you can't pull people behind the curtain when they're it their emotions are at their height now it's a skill now with i i i feel like that unfairly put a lot of stuff on to mitch during that game yeah one of the things that i saw and i wanted to know
Starting point is 00:22:50 what you guys thought about this man like well it's a whole team but i look at the first line and matthew nice has two games games where he's dominant and games where he's completely fucking invisible and i need matthew nize if matthew nize like matthew nize's agent was in darren drager's ear at the beginning of the season and unironically drager said they the leafs cannot afford to put him on an eight-year contract can't afford it it'll be too much they don't have the cap room he said that on tsn and and matthew nize at the beginning of the season was a monster absolute monster he was and we were talking about it's like well you know well it's and dregs was like it's got to be a bridge deal they're not going to be able to afford the longer
Starting point is 00:23:34 term when it's just too much money whatever and i look at it now and i go i don't think so this is what here's what i want matthew nye's to avoid okay okay let me let me go let me finish this and then and and lee fans are not going to like this but but this is what we look at okay so you got i'm going to give you i'm going to give you a guy that's not going to make you happy josh anderson you've got to avoid being josh anderson or signing him you got to avoid signing josh anderson matthew nise is a different person than josh anderson josh anderson has a different agent than matthew nise matthew nise is very young very young however you're playing with the top two guys on this team in theory now i don't love i don't love them together i've i've been on the
Starting point is 00:24:21 record saying that i don't love matthews and marner together i don't they made changes today and it wasn't what you thought it would be i think i think they play better separately most of the time most of the time but they want to play together they're the two highest paid players whatever or somewhat highest paid players i think against lesser opponents they're great and against good opponents they can't play together matthew nyes's next step has got to be consistency on a game like that against vancouver i i think it's great that max patch ready can go in and lay somebody out yeah um max patch ready's like 36 and not in the lineup and not in the lineup probably tomorrow uh matthew nice who has been now downgraded and we'll talk about this a little
Starting point is 00:25:05 bit later to the second line with tavaris and neilander um he was really bad against carolina he was really sloppy against vancouver um dude i understand that there is a uh it takes a bit to adjust from the ncaa schedule to the nhl schedule last year and this year it's gonna take time i get it but if you're gonna play in that role you need to be in that role all the time and berube got on him about that came out publicly talked about it nice had a stellar couple of games and then has gone back to where he was and this is what this is part of growth yes it's part of being young but that's a game where if Matthew Nyes had turned it on he could have turned the game he's got that kind of potential and that's why I want to see that from him that's
Starting point is 00:25:53 the word though potential like at the end of the day they don't have anyone they don't have anyone on the left side I think what you're complaining about more is roster construction because Matthew nice that's what it comes down to because matthew nice is 22 years old yes matthew nice has equaled his goal told i think he's surpassed it now because he had 15 goals last year he's got 16 already this season he is a great young player who is growing into his role but because of the way the team has been constructed over the last decade they've had to play this 22 year old who's in his second full season in the nhl at first line left wing and that's not his fault why is the roster constructed that way?
Starting point is 00:26:33 They're spending too much in net? You don't have to do the whole show to get to the point of they have Matthews, Marner, and they've rebuilt the defense and are spending more money back there. That's why Bertuzzi couldn't stick around. They took that money, they put it back there. That comes with consequences.
Starting point is 00:26:51 Now you can't score a goal. They still played him on the first line last year, too, until they didn't and Bertuzzi and Domi did a great job. He didn't play that much on the first line. He did a bit. he did i'm gonna go back and check the game logs because he played a lot on the first line last year he got plenty of opportunities and it's listen i'm not saying matthew knives is a bad player i know i'm gonna get these people in the comments going how dare you criticize my favorite
Starting point is 00:27:13 that's what you're saying at all i don't think that's what you're saying i i think that he needs to know don't pre-order when yeah you're right what he needs to know when to step up because let's be straight because of the roster construction we know that even though they've got four guys under contract that make that kind of money there are going to be nights where all four of them have a night off or have a night where they're not at their best or have a night where they're injured i think that's a problem i think that that's a big problem if you look at this team and you say hey 22 year old who's in his second year of full season you better step up because the guys were paying all this money might have a night off he's got that that's the
Starting point is 00:27:53 opportunity the gm's problem not the not the play but if he wants his agent to go talking to guys to insiders and spouting off about how the Leafs could never afford him on an eight-year contract, step up and play that way. And he's not. Listen, if that hadn't happened earlier this year, I made note of that. I remember that because I was like, okay, young player, that's a lot, really soon out of the gate. Okay, all right, we'll see what happens.
Starting point is 00:28:20 And I want Matthew Nyes to be what he was in October and November and parts of the last couple of weeks. but i'm saying that if you want to put that out there if you've okayed and by the way every player okays their agent doing stuff like that if you've okayed that then you better back it up man you then put yourself in that position and that is why i have to talk about that that way if that conversation had never taken place if drags had never said that then we're not having this conversation today i am not bringing that up but if you're gonna go out there and go well my number it's huge you couldn't even fathom paying me that is where i'm like okay all right then back it up
Starting point is 00:29:01 and be there every game and understand when the guys who have been in the league for as long as they have are having an off night this is your chance to go make that eight or nine million bucks that you're expecting to make here's an idea um you want slavkovsky's deal listen oh my god you want slavkovsky's deal this is your chance here's an idea um the canucks are three games and four nights and they're tired and they're injured and they're sick and their flight got in late and how should the first five minutes of that game go uh leaf should run them over you should come out like you should come out like you're nick robertson all of you are nick robertson and you got scratched all you were nick robertson except you're six two yeah so you so you fall
Starting point is 00:29:41 down a little yeah if you get handed in your own zone a lot but not a lot the least probably had three scoring chances all game and robertson had one oh yeah you know lankanen made a real good kick save there i think back again again the best teams have something wrong with them palmer race i think back to the bruins panthers series which i forgot went six um you fuckers now you want to make plays pound their fucking d until uh uh so that by game seven that's what he said until uh so that when game seven comes they have nothing left you should have been able to neutralize the canucks in the first eight minutes of that game pounding deep you gotta shut up it's not okay it's not okay um every like i went through the
Starting point is 00:30:37 list kachuk there's something wrong with him there's something wrong with him alexander barkov one of the most underrated players in this entire league two-way phenom what did he do before kachuk let's talk about it he passed to huberto and huberto passed to him yeah and they got four wins in the playoffs after winning the president's trophy cool uh there's something wrong with that guy mark stone there's something wrong with that guy yeah he very clearly something wrong with mark stone petrangelo he's missing well adjusted and just mean you know the vegas has some of those guys had some of those guys colorado should be self-explanatory that's nathan mckinnon he's some no chocolate bars until the offseason yeah something wrong
Starting point is 00:31:24 with that guy but that's great nikita kucherov there's something wrong with that guy he walks in to that kind of game and he's like well i'm getting six points tonight and i'm gonna knee someone in the dick because i'm nikita kucherov and that's what i do that's a different way to pound the d different way to pound the d uh the craig berube blues something wrong with those dudes and i mentioned ovechkin for the capitals and someone went whoa whoa whoa where's tom wilson in this equation and i went oh shit now the leafs had someone there was something wrong with and that's nasm cadre one he kept getting suspended so the thing that was wrong with him is he's not playing um but two like i'm talking your stars yeah you're super duper stars cadre was a star
Starting point is 00:32:15 for the Leafs, but not in the same way that Kachuk is for the Panthers and Stone. And you see what I'm going to I don't think those guys are so easy to acquire. No, but I agree with you. I feel like those you're talking about the top, top players in the game. There's like eight of them.
Starting point is 00:32:31 Panthers traded for Kachuk. Vegas traded for Stone. Do you remember the trade? It was a pretty big trade. And how we all said Calgary did really good in that trade. What Steve is saying is they're being bold.
Starting point is 00:32:45 which is something that the Leafs are not. You got to take risks. Average is death or whatever it is. Being mid is death. Safety is death. And I think we can all agree, even though those players are hard to acquire, they don't have them.
Starting point is 00:33:11 Well, let's... They don't have them. I would agree with that, except for they're scratching the guys that do, and Pacioretty is one of them. Let's have a look at the Leafs' lineup from practice today. According to David Alter, we've got Lorenz Matthews-Marner, Nyes Tavares-Nylander, McMahon-Domi Robertson is back together, Dewar-Kampf and Reeves, Holmberg and Pacioretty, excuse me, sitting.
Starting point is 00:33:33 Hockenpah is back on the ice today after a second knee scope. Riley Myers, O.E.L. Tenev, Benoit, Timmons, and Marshall Refine-Hockenpah are the spare pair and then you've got wool and hill to be now i want to talk a little bit about the just this lineup and then i want to talk about special teams so five on five the steven lorenz thing reminds me of when sheldon keith put noah gregor with marner and matthews last year you guys remember that for like gregor um holmberg for i think seven games i've loved steven lorenz's game but that is not steven lorenz's game i'm i'm curious he's deserved his bump up in the lineup oh yeah certainly loved him on the third line what what what do we expect
Starting point is 00:34:17 from lorenz in that role what do you think brew base telling him today be steven lorenz which is what we mean give me like give me i will i will so we were talking about knives and inconsistency there's no inconsistency to steven lorenz's game the the trade-off is you don't get nearly the same kind of high-end talent nearly the same kind of offensive production he's probably not going to blow his defensive assignments he's probably going to hit the dog shit out of his opponent he's going to be in the corner um he might as well not tape his stick um because he's just going to be you know digging and shoveling yeah he's just gonna be shoveling the driveway out there he's gonna be what the reason i say that is i was asking players about their tape job during
Starting point is 00:35:05 I think it was the Matthews-Marner rookie year. And I asked Hyman about his. And he's like, well, I don't really focus on it or put much tape because I'm too busy in the corners. Hyman's done pretty good. He's done pretty well with his career by being that player. He was that player so he could evolve into a different one, right? And now he can still fall back on the fundamentals of I am awful to play against
Starting point is 00:35:32 when the puck's not going in. and sure enough the puck is going and now he owns an ohl team and now he owns an ohl that by the way was approved this morning by the board of governors so that is official he is a owner of the bulldogs along with the hyman family good for him yeah good for him um steven lorenz is going to go in there and you're maybe going to be frustrated with what he can't do but what can he do he's going to do what he can do every single shift he's going to be belligerent and huge and hard on the forecheck and he's going to do his best to create space for the other two. Your goal in life is to not be the third man on the Matthews-Marner line.
Starting point is 00:36:22 It's to be the distraction. It's almost like it's Matthews-Marner as the two forwards. You got two defensemen out there and then bowling ball. That's what you have. You have bowling ball. Should Marner be in the corner? What for? Should Matthews be in the corner?
Starting point is 00:36:41 What for? They can both do it. I want Steven Lorenz there. And then tell you what, once you're done in the corner, go to the net at Mach 5. Go to the net as fast as you possibly can. Bang and a rebate. He's going to score.
Starting point is 00:36:56 I'm going to put money down. He's going to score. Maybe not Tuesday. I'm going to include that in the BetMGM big story then. if he plays the next three games in that spot he's scoring i'm serious i'm serious and i i mean i i believe in this guy he's been playing great the difference is like i have no idea what his ice time is going to be because uh what's what even is his career high in ice time yeah so you asked me that question before we got started when you saw the lines
Starting point is 00:37:30 and steven lawrence's career high in ice time is 21 40 holy shit flames on april 12 2023 played the san jose sharks because he was a shark and nikita zadorov had a hat trick that game what in a 3-1 victory for the calgary flame so he was on the losing side of that he was a minus two in the game in 21 minutes and 40 seconds and capo kakunin made 46 saves in the loss in the loss allowed only two goals zadorov's hat trick came with an empty netter but it was not a pretty game for the sharks uh thankfully kakunin stood on his head to make this only a 3-1 loss that is steven lawrence's career high in ice time two uh former leafs scored in that game noah gregor and Zdorov if the Flames weren't petulant
Starting point is 00:38:26 children. That's pretty cool. Wow. So there you go. Good fact. Good fact. So do you take anything from that? I don't know why. You were very interested in his career I thought that was fun though. Well I mean I mean these guys are professional athletes like most of them I think can play a 20 minute game
Starting point is 00:38:42 even if they haven't in recent memory. I mean you know it's funny like wait is the Stars game at home or on the road home tomorrow okay so this is this that makes a lot more sense then because i believe the leafs are at home for the next few games and it's easier to protect that line it's easier to put them in positions to succeed um because this is maybe an experiment that you don't want to try
Starting point is 00:39:13 for the first time on the road you got home uh sharks home stars tuesday sheldon keefe returns to toronto thursday excellent and then saturday they fly short over to uh montreal and they play bell center hockey night in canada which will be fun it's gonna feel great if you're sheldon keith you see stephen lorenz on the first line just some random grinder up there with matthews and marner and you're like look at you trying the same shit do you think it gets more than one game yeah yeah all right do you think it makes it to the weekend jesse uh no no i think this is a one game thing now why why is even lorenz is going to be a top line left winger longer than william nylander was a center at any well he's doing one game so that's surpassing william center damn
Starting point is 00:40:02 that's crazy standard hey uh because willie was they never did no no william center sheldon keith hey look at you doing the same shit so if nize is moving to the second line which is not much of a downgrade. Tavares and Nylander, pretty good. What do they expect from him there? Why are they pulling him? Why are they breaking this lineup other than the fact that they were like minus 80 freaking million over the last two games? What is the Nyes
Starting point is 00:40:27 expectation on the second line? I think they're doing the wrong. I think Berube is doing the wrong thing here in moving Nyes and leaving Matthews and Marner. Like, we saw Pacioretty, Nylander, and Tavares have a good, like, two, three weeks. They really had a run together.
Starting point is 00:40:44 And then they got stale. and then it wasn't working again. But I don't know why you would take Pacioretty out and not try that again because it did work. Because Reeves has got to play. Wow, that's... It doesn't help that William Nylander looks like expensive Daniel Sprung.
Starting point is 00:41:01 Yeah, he's not shooting the puck, first of all. It's not great. And if he's not shooting, he's not scoring. There's a lot of nothing from Willie right now, which isn't great. He had those three breakaways against Carolina, which is just a ridiculous sentence. What's he done?
Starting point is 00:41:14 mm-hmm like name even a good shift he's had since three breakaways yeah no so like since those yeah no like these those three breakaways are an oasis in an otherwise nine ten game desert for him he's been brutal yeah no so with the with the nice thing on the second line i don't i don't get it because i don't think it's the right mix you know i feel like it should be matthews and nice like Like, you probably leave him there with Matthews because he's proven that he can play well with him. And then you move Marner off, who's had so much success this whole season. He should get, like, not first-place Hart Trophy votes, but somewhere in the top five for what he's done without Austin Matthews this season. That's what he's looked at his back.
Starting point is 00:41:57 All he's done has been a Hart Trophy candidate without Austin Matthews. And for some reason, every single game, we run him out with Austin Matthews. It makes absolutely no sense to me. Well, and that's where I'm like, is this Brubé going, okay, guys, you want to stay together? We're going to put Lorenz with you now because this trio with Nyes is not working. And if this continues to not work, then I'm breaking you guys up. That's embarrassing. It's like...
Starting point is 00:42:28 Why? You do have to play that out throughout a season, right? Bless Steven Lorenz. But like, if you're one of those, if you're those two guys, how don't you look at who the other guy is on your line and go off because you're an athlete. You don't, you don't think about that. You don't do that. You don't think about that.
Starting point is 00:42:44 No, no. But like the reason this is happening is you, right. Or at least you own a big chunk of this. At the end of the day, nice. Isn't doing what he's meant to do in that role. Go to the net. He's the birth of go to the net because that's what he did at the beginning of the season. and that's why he did well.
Starting point is 00:43:05 I know for a fact Steven Lorenz is going to do it. Since Nye's got that head injury this season, he's been playing a little timid. And I saw it against the Islanders because he kept coming into my corner to start the game. He was a bowling ball because someone, probably Craig Berube,
Starting point is 00:43:26 got in his ear and was like, this is what you need to do. And he did it for a few games, and it's gone. This is the consistency. talk that we had that line definitely needed to be split up i would have put all three of them on different lines i think well maybe he didn't want to mess with other lines that were doing well which ones which one i think i think the domey line still looks good i'm still a fan of the domey line pardon i'm they're still outscoring opponents steve the domey line the real line
Starting point is 00:43:51 they are you know you might not like the fact that they allow goals but they are outscoring opponents they are outscoring them and and if they're together if they're together during the playoffs don't watch well they're not going to be well why how come they're great because you know that they're not going to be together you know why why they're good they are good max domi had two good shifts on saturday yeah he's not played great he wasn't i get that at all he had two like i don't think that he's done anything to warrant keeping a line together well i think perhaps nick nick robertson's a part-time player like i don't understand i don't understand keeping max patch already out of the lineup i would prefer the third line is the fourth i would prefer patch already be
Starting point is 00:44:30 in there instead of robertson to be honest yeah because i like the idea of patcher ready and mcmahon being freight trains with max domi in the middle i like that idea i don't know why they're not doing it i don't get it or even like i and i here's what i think you want you want my real theory why nick robertson's play they're trying to trade him and if you scratch him you can't trade him they're trying to get him going so they can move him as a part of whatever package is happening at the deadline no he played he played well he was one of yes and that is why you don't play him no he's in the lineup because he earned it yeah he if like this is very obviously like you know you know with my reaction to the Canucks loss people were like okay okay calm down and then
Starting point is 00:45:18 Craig Berube put Steven Lorenz on the top line okay yeah I'm the only one overreacting to this right he puts steven lorenz up there but if we're reacting in a vacuum to that vancouver game you don't take robertson out he was one of the only guys who looked decent i thought he how many scoring chances did they have in that game i know he had at least one of them yep he should that's his job yeah and yeah but how many guys failed at doing their job a lot and that's why the game was three nothing and he didn't fail they did so why am i getting out of the lineup because you're part-time player no i'm not based on that performance no i'm not you are well based on patcher readies he shouldn't be yeah he's been great there's nothing wrong with patches game
Starting point is 00:46:03 this is my point and i think i think that the leafs are doing what they can to say all right get nick in a position to score put him on a high offense line we'll we'll we'll trade him to a team that can give him more ice time and we'll get something back as a part of a bigger package. No one's doing a one-for-one for Nick Robertson. Although, to be honest with you,
Starting point is 00:46:23 at his number, that's an attractive player for a lot of teams. You know, yes. I do feel like we're getting a little sidetracked here. On purpose. Don't worry, I'm going to bring us back.
Starting point is 00:46:32 Well, no, I think we're giving a pass to something that needs to be blown to friggin' smithereens. The power play. Well, that's where I was headed. There you go. After the big story. yeah that's what i'm see this is what i'm doing i'm going to the big story we're talking a little
Starting point is 00:46:48 foosball oh and then uh and then we're gonna come back and we're gonna we're gonna talk about our play all right is that cool you guys ready let's do it bet mgm big story let's do it sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and their way around on that is like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper thing and the and the washer thing

Starting point is 00:48:32 and help create a world free from the fear of cancer. Register today at pmcfwalk.ca. now we talked about pounding d earlier let's talk about your pp your pp1 okay uh let's talk about the power play let's talk about austin matthews views on the power play because i got austin and i got morgan and here's what they say austin there's a lot of movement a lot of nothing going on i guess and i think we can just do a better job of simplifying it more shots on the net and letting things open up from there morgan riley on the least power play we have things drawn up that we'd like to execute and it just feels like we're not able to it feels like we're just a bit
Starting point is 00:49:12 disconnected the least power play is currently 18th in the nhl and there is 54 million dollars playing on that first unit okay 18th 54 million dollars their pk is third their pk is so good pk is amazing now lane lambert baby we gotta talk we we gotta talk about this because because the leafs power play they did work on it at practice today which is good good you know that okay um i think some of what they're going to hold on to is the um because here's how the power plays are are looking they are keeping uh marner matthews tavaris neil and her knives together so they're going back to five forward five forwards and then they're doing riley oel Robertson Domi McMahon and the second power play unit never sees any time anyway no and that's why
Starting point is 00:50:06 there's two defensemen out there um yeah yeah all right so what do we think here guys is it the coach is it the players is it the both and why is there such a need to keep these guys who are underperforming together because we're back to where the power play was in October and we're back to and this is the more concerning part where the power play was in early to mid-april last year going into the playoffs when it was anemic to me it's the players and that's why it's the coach um what are you doing every night you're sending out basically the same guys um how come now i do like nice being added to the first group i do too you they're not hard enough to play against in front of the net so i like that um you have nice be a bulldog in
Starting point is 00:51:01 front of the net that makes tavaris's life easier that makes everyone's life easier um you make marner the quarterback the defenseman basically um and teams the the the word seems to be out there on the leafs power play and we see it every single time the broadcast points it out first thing every first power play of the game four check the leafs um at the at the blue line at the blue always and they they don't have an answer for it imagine that skating skating is the achilles because because they stand still and shoot a perimeter and mark savard's taking a lot of heat and i understand that he's the power play coach that happened in the 2023 playoffs The Lightning were passive at the blue line.
Starting point is 00:51:50 The Leafs did whatever they wanted to do, floated the puck on from the point, and they were able to either score directly or bang it in. The Florida Panthers actually put pressure on them. The Leafs weren't able to do anything about it. That was two years and a coach and a GM ago. And you're sending the same guys out there, and your power play has the same weaknesses. your entry is poor and you're not able to hold the line what what are we doing here well and
Starting point is 00:52:23 how on earth how is sending out that group of five people on tuesday even a consideration you're not you're not able to hold the line because the puck's at the line too much yeah that's the problem because they put pressure and you don't have an answer you can't get the puck down low and and what i'm noticing about this year's power play that is concerning for me is do you guys remember a time when austin matthews had a big shot on the power play this is a guy yeah the best shot in the league one of the best shots in the you would get one timers are you seeing that anymore no not have you seen one this year i can't remember one uh a very small handful yeah so that was the one thing that did work and you're not even doing
Starting point is 00:53:06 that no and they're doing what the leafs i'm noticing is so it's it's to play the leafs you have to play essentially a rectangle right two forwards high two defense low you know mess up the the two guys in front of the net in this case it'd be Tavares high nice towards the goalie and so four check hard when the puck's at the net and the Leafs love love an NHL 14 cross ice pass they love it they they overpass maybe worse than anyone in the league and so when you do that you can't get matthews set up to use his shot i know he's got one i just never get to see it anymore they're so good at setting up plays that work 100 of the time uh five percent of the time like yeah they're yeah if this pass gets through monster it's in the back of the net
Starting point is 00:54:01 no one's stopping it pass never gets through ever ever ever and you know it's the same roster construction problem alright what's your second unit then the Leafs outside of the
Starting point is 00:54:19 five or six guys they put on the power play is just a group of random men right it's a group of role players so what do you do all the problems come back to the same thing and it's in it's insane that they're gonna try this uh essentially the same unit again um on tuesday and let me ask you this jesse and steve what is
Starting point is 00:54:46 the punishment for underperformance uh when you so so the performance for the first line having the worst week i've ever seen them have like those two games were awful for the first line sure and their punishment is move the young guy down yeah so you get steven lawrence like i listen craig barubi's got a bit of shine because uh i mean they're they are first in the division i think we like how the team's playing this is mystifying yeah i don't the line combinations i think we went over they're not i don't agree with them and what he's doing but with the power play um jonah siegel was writing today about the lack of shots that the power play generates i think it's it's clear to everybody who watches the game they don't get enough shots towards the net they're
Starting point is 00:55:36 21st in generating uh on shots on the power play in the league which isn't acceptable when you have all oh my god that's outrageous yeah bad and they get blocked and miss a lot they they get blocked a ton they should have the most shots in the league because they usually spend the full two minutes right but the thing that stood out to me the most was william neilander especially in his shots on the power play and i don't know whether it's on him or the way they are trying to play but he has in his last 20 games five shots on goal on the power play that's absurd that's that's that's mitch marner is ahead of william neilander in shots on the power play in the last 20 games that's unacceptable he's the team leading goal scorer that's on that
Starting point is 00:56:24 is unacceptable and this this team i don't know what their reluctant reluctance is to just throw things at the net you know just vol be a be a volume shooting team because consistently year after year after year they're passing to try and get the perfect shot or they're they're passing back to try and get the perfect entry and we've seen that not work time and time again and william kneelander seems like the guy to be yelling at everybody else to just shoot just shoot the fucking puck and he's the one getting the least amount of shot they're timid i think they dread getting a power play oh yeah absolutely they and if you dread it then take a break they dread it and here's the thing yeah okay said nhl officials never calling a penalty but um you take a shot
Starting point is 00:57:07 on net what happens you might get the rebound what's more likely to happen they clear it and then what do you got to do you got to go get it and you got to do the entry again do you have confidence in your entry if you're the Leafs the Leafs have zero confidence in their entry and you see it yeah because they suck yeah they know it's everything they're back to the back pass at the blue line when they dumped and chased it went better no here are the Leafs two best strategies uh exit or sorry enter um exactly on the wall which teams will grudgingly give you they're like all right well if you're gonna get in we're gonna let you do it along the wall or my favorite is when willie goes fuck you guys i'll do it and it's usually him and he goes the whole length of
Starting point is 00:57:54 the ice and he does four moves and sometimes he gets stuffed and it looks stupid and he goes to the bench and off other times you're like god i love this guy and it works um listen i i would love to offer some sort of solution like i got one i got one what what are the caps what have the caps done for 20 years with ovechkin put him in the boom boom spot sat his ass at the fucking hash marks and said let's get alex the puck and you can you just have matthews there as a cannon just have him as a cannon okay and it's crazy you know it's crazy ovi keeps scoring on the power play so crazy it's the same strategy we talk about the least with the same strategy as though this needs to be a galaxy brain thing.
Starting point is 00:58:35 Guys, these guys have been playing power plays since they were three years old, okay? They know how to play a power play any way that you draw it up. Put Matthews in that shot. The only two people that should be taking outside shots on this team right now are Matthews and Willie, and the guys that should be leading the team
Starting point is 00:58:53 in power play goals are Nyes and Tavares. You get shots from either of those two. Willie a little higher on the other board, Matthews by the hash marks, and you get Tavares and Nyes as many rebounds as you possibly can and they just bury them. Does nobody remember what JVR used to do here?
Starting point is 00:59:10 Teach Nyes to tip a puck or two. Remember? No, no, no, no, no, no, no. He can do that. Well, okay. Then tip it. JVR was the best. He can't do it on the second unit.
Starting point is 00:59:19 Okay, but... Like, okay. The second unit gets 20 seconds. Yeah, he wasn't on the first unit on Saturday. The way the Leafs generate offense, the way the Berube Leafs generate offense is messing stuff up in front and trying to get deflections and rebounds,
Starting point is 00:59:35 and you don't put Nyes out there, yeah, you get what you deserve. Who's better on this team at doing that than him? No, Matthew Nyes probably. He's the best. He's the best. I don't think anyone's close, really. Like, he shouldn't spend, like, for...
Starting point is 00:59:55 We have our designated accountability boy. like the only dude who seems to face accountability for when he's bad is nice he should never spend a game off that top unit it's the power play it's not five on five it's different it's a different world and he's the best put him there i agree and i don't know if this says anything but he's only got one power play goal this season like yeah but of all his goals they've they've been mostly at five on five except for the one but he gets the daryl boys assist with the with the screen um with the with the power play entry stuff i watch sometimes on tiktok hockey strategy videos and they'll like pull stuff from the nhl and they'll show like what's working with teams and one thing
Starting point is 01:00:43 that i've seen a number of times with the power play is teams doing fake drop passes and taking the power play into the zone off of the rush off of the lead guy i like that so those i think it's the florida panthers who are really effective at this because teams now defensively when they're on the pk they sit at the line like like how they do against the leafs every single time and they just know that the back pass is coming so they can just sit there and anticipate it so what some really smart players across the league are doing is they just rush past those guys who are sitting stationary at the line waiting for the for waiting for the back the back pass to happen so let's say it's riley who who's who probably should probably shouldn't be in that
Starting point is 01:01:26 position taking up the puck so probably mitch martin let's say it's mitch marner taking the puck into the zone he'll do a little pivot to fake the back pass and then just keep it carrying through the zone and then that the defenseman is is like cannot catch and the the the clips that i was watching i forget the i wish i could shout out the creator who does the low coaching stuff um they were showing consistently how the two defensemen sitting there are lame ducks because they're anticipating the back pass and this the guy who's leading the entry into the zone can just walk through and then you get you get a chance first of all off of the rush on the power play and that usually leads to then you set up your power play as well if that's not a goal for uh
Starting point is 01:02:06 right away so i feel like the leafs the way they play their power play is timid and scared and nobody's willing to be creative in these moments and do little things like this to fool the defense because that takes a creative play and i don't see riley when he was there saturday leading the charge doing any of that he'll just do the drop back back drop back pass i don't see mitch marner ever doing anything that's outside of the structure of what the coaches talk about and there just needs to be some creativity and not timidness on this power which goes back to what we said earlier like mitch will he's ron burgundy i'm ron burgundy the teleprompter tells me he will whatever you put on the teleprompter ron will read yeah and that's how it feels right now with
Starting point is 01:02:50 the power play and mitch leads the leafs in power play points with 22 how many leafs boys and girls um have double digit power play points i have no idea three it's not great it is willie 22 Nylander 19 sorry Mitch 22 Nylander 19 my bad Marner 22 Nylander 19 Matthew 10 a lot of games no no but
Starting point is 01:03:18 Tavares 9 I know it's good I might take him off good stuff from the Leafs and he's been it's so weird like then but then who do you put on is it Morgan Riley the guy who struggled the most I think on this team that we haven't even gotten to yet anybody or is it Oliver Ekman
Starting point is 01:03:34 larson who i actually really liked on the first unit i think mcmahon can be bumper patch already can be bumper if you play him um patch ready's fucking huge like i don't understand why they don't he can be effective in that spot yes i i really think that top unit is he five time 30 goal score i think he can figure it out he might he might he might he might a lot of room for improvement is that's good news hey now i'm gonna leave the morgan riley discussion until wednesday because I'd like to see how he does tomorrow night. Well, we also already had it. Yeah, so I'm not going to go there.
Starting point is 01:04:10 One thing I do want to update you on, so like I said, Yanni Hockenpah, after the two games he played, I had forgotten about this. Maybe you guys remember this, but he had another procedure done on his knee. Yes. And so he is skating today, but, you know,
Starting point is 01:04:22 but he's taking line rushes and that's great and he's playing with Marshall Raffai and hopefully we see him in the lineup too because it'll be just in time for the Four Nations. I hope he goes. Oh, me too. Update on Stallers though, According to Darren Drager, he's progressing well,
Starting point is 01:04:36 expected to start skating properly soon, like with the team. But they were hoping he'd be ready to play by the end of January. It's looking more like early February. So maybe he gets a couple games in before in Four Nations. Personally, I don't think goaltending is an issue. I don't think Dennis Hildeby was an issue on Saturday night. I think Joseph Wall was exhausted against the Carolina Hurricanes, didn't have his best game, but I've loved his game this year.
Starting point is 01:04:59 lots of teams manage to win games without needing a top 10 goaltender in net every night yep and the leafs need to figure that out yeah so let's move on from the leafs no you just want to stay here yeah no oh can i do something about the lfr oh yeah because is that steve's a bit wimpy wimpy poopy i don't think steve's ever been more wrong in the lfr you said you said something you said something that i don't know if vancouver fans got on you about it but you've never been more wrong on anything that you've ever said okay uh you talked about the game on saturday yep the whole lfr right and you did that talked about the leafs and their struggles and then you also talked very briefly about the vancouver canucks and you said that elias pedersen he
Starting point is 01:05:46 didn't even have a good game couldn't have been more wrong the dude had one of the best games of his entire season uh the game isn't just played offensively it's played on both ends of the ice he was the best defensive forward on the ice that night okay um and his teammates even said so they were chanting selkie from the bench because of the amount of great defensive plays he had uh on saturday night and i think he deserves a shout out for that and um they asked when he was about it and he he's the one who's like yeah we're the selkie stuff was hilarious and then they asked petterson about it and he's like yeah i don't think i've ever heard that before what a What a hilarious good time get-right game for the Vancouver Canucks.
Starting point is 01:06:28 Good for them. I forget who... And the Canes, who had had a pretty mediocre record in the new year. Man, they got right against which team? Welcome to Toronto. Here's our bottom. Pat, Pat. It was Thomas Drance who tweeted out,
Starting point is 01:06:40 Pedersen said, First time I heard it this year about the Selke jokes from his teammates. And then there was another tweet from Grady Sass who cut together a super cut of Pedersen's defensive plays from Saturday, which was fantastic stuff. All right. Well, then let me correct myself.
Starting point is 01:06:58 I didn't think he had a very relevant offensive game, but he was obviously taking care of business on the other side. Yeah, it's a 200-foot game, Steve. Yeah. I will say this. Everyone looks good against an unmotivated Leafs team. That's fair.
Starting point is 01:07:16 No, there are nights, And they just reek of it. There are nights where they play and you're like, all right, they're going to have a good game. And there are nights where everyone gets about two shifts in and you're like, they don't fucking have it. And that was one of them. Pedersen also led the team in block shots.
Starting point is 01:07:38 Wow. Meh. Yeah, block shots, that's a stupid step. It's only relevant when Tanev does it. You don't see it often from Pedersen, which I think is an important note here. This isn't the biggest strength of his game. He's good at blocked passes. If you look at the numbers, he's always amongst the top of the league in forwards, in blocked passes.
Starting point is 01:07:58 But playing this type of Barkov hockey isn't Pedersen's wheelhouse. And I think having all of the controversy in Vancouver, he seemed extra motivated on Saturday night, and he played a great game. So I just want to shout out Pedersen for that because he did not get love in the LFR. okay that's it no i'm just looking at the at the supercut it's pretty cool right of the plays he's just the hardest working player in every battle yeah and it's and the leafs just set a nice low bar for him it was a nice low bar good it's a good dig at the leaf shout out everyone who paid a grand to be there yeah on saturday quinn hughes unbelievable dude deserves some heart love that steel
Starting point is 01:08:41 bumble fucking the puck around the bumble fuck Adam what's uh what's up next well look at that steel okay so I do want to talk Cutter Gauthier oh
Starting point is 01:08:52 my god you guys stink oh come on with that one yeah see they're watching thing that you guys you guys can't see or hear what the lead with this
Starting point is 01:08:59 Steven just you're watching it's good stuff two and five Canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters

So Cutter Gauthier had the best of times and the worst of times, but in the opposite order, right? He had the worst of times, first of times. and then the second second game best of times he kind of had like the john tavaris weekend
Starting point is 01:10:11 because he he went to the team that he he spurned got his ass kicked and then the next game he uh i know tavaris scored at least one goal in that buffalo game yeah gochi got two against carolina so gochi gets the booze raining down on him he gets travis connect me saying i'll fight you and weirdly didn't fight him yeah weird that's so weird but that's so consistently a theme and i think travis connect me knew that that's why he said it uh and then he scored the ot winner against a very good carolina team on the second half of a back-to-back and by the way lucas dostal is so unbelievably good it's crazy he had a great game but i i think guys i've been beating this drum on my own for a bit and i just want to take a moment to do it again can i do it i think and i want
Starting point is 01:10:58 Respond to me here. This isn't me just going alone. No. All right. I think it's so interesting how the Flyers organization weaponized their fans against this guy.
Starting point is 01:11:10 Oh, yeah. Because if you remember when the trade happened and it was a very mediocre trade and I'm from Toronto, I'm used to players not wanting to play here. Maybe less so in hockey,
Starting point is 01:11:19 but in basketball and baseball. I mean, look at the chase this winter. What a fucking joke. And I look at this and I understand what it's like to be spurred. I understand what it's like to guys like i want to get the hell out of here like don't ask me about david wells i don't like
Starting point is 01:11:32 that guy sure you know what i mean the flyers made when this guy requested a trade which he's allowed to do the flyers made a mediocre trade jamie drysdale is fine jamie drysdale is not going to be anything that what cutter goche will be right probably not right and so instead of instead of taking their time and making a really good trade they made a flash trade um got jamie drysdale hasn't helped them much later on that season they bumble the playoffs right just bro we have the playoffs but we're gonna they should have made it they should have made it and and so what's hilarious is no yeah right and whose fault is that and they still have no fault whose fault is that yeah it's also the russian government um dan keith jones and danny breer
Starting point is 01:12:19 canadian government well the people it was their own fault they shouldn't say the canadian government the goalie got charged with a crime yeah let's let's say let's say what it is yeah yeah you know what's crazy about that is they knew that was coming for months they knew that was coming for months that was insane they knew that was coming for months no and last year they had a criminal in the russian government that was bad and they had they didn't have fedotov or fedotov depending upon what broadcast you're watching and and guess what fedotov hasn't made a lick of a difference philadelphia is a goalie graveyard that's besides That's the point.
Starting point is 01:12:52 Keith Jones and Danny Breyer, the second that trade was made, they went on. They went on camera. They said two things. First off, we had to make this deal. Cutter, Cutter didn't cut her ass right. And he broke up with me at the altar in front of my mom and dad. Damn. That's what they kept saying.
Starting point is 01:13:06 He wouldn't even return our phone calls. Now, the Flyers fans, and I know you're not going to like me for this, and I'm sure Dave and Zippy in the afternoon are going to use this on their local sports station. No, no. cuz and chunas well i don't know if cuz and chunas are gonna even zippy but i think it's hilarious that flyers fans don't understand why people don't want to play there by the way flyers fans it's not you i'm not blaming you i i think it's plainly right in front of you i don't i don't think they misunderstand i think they know i i don't think they know no i i think they know and they so what
Starting point is 01:13:44 do you think it is what do you think i'm gonna say fuck you no it's no no no no no sorry what i what do i think it is with their fans that's that's what it's not that what the reason that people don't want to play for the flyers is the head coach the reason that cutter goche wanted out of philadelphia is the head coach so he went to the ducks anywhere else look at how it's so funny it's so funny that flyers fans will be like uh cutter goche what a loser didn't want to play here and then complain about matt bay mitchkoff getting benched getting dressed and playing nine minutes uh he's not on the number one power play unit despite the fact that he's the only person within 20 points of travis koniecki who currently leads the team in points by 20 he's got which is
Starting point is 01:14:29 crazy he's got 50 mitch kauf's got 30 and the next closest is owen tippett at 26 yeah but and by the way isn't the flyers traded cutter goche for a defenseman when their big problem was a goaltending and b scoring so they got mid defenseman no disrespect to jamie drysdale I think he projects out to be what he is, the fourth of four in your top four. And what I find hilarious is when you go back and you look at Torts' history, no young player likes playing for this guy. And by the way, he's not done a great job developing them either. I'm going to bring you back to he had problems with Richards.
Starting point is 01:15:07 He had problems with LeCavalier. He had issues in Vancouver. He made the Sedins try to block shots. There was issues in New York with younger players. josh anderson ryan johansson and columbus i mean like this guy has a resume of young players that like he does not mix with i think mitch kauf is a triumph mitch kauf's his only win and mitch kauf and it's in his most recent and it's because of mitch kauf's talent it's not because of torts's coaching sorry sorry and it's a little bit because of the coach and i like torts
Starting point is 01:15:42 I like torts. No, you don't. I do like torts. I do like torts. But the reality is, guys, you ask anyone around the league, there's a lot of players that don't want to play for this guy.
Starting point is 01:15:50 Cutter Gauthier is one of them. And what the Flyers organization did, which was admittedly extremely smart, was they said, listen, this is a bad trade, and it's a trade we don't have to make. But it's the best one available to us right now. We think we're going to the playoffs,
Starting point is 01:16:04 which is what they did. They did think that going into last year around the time. We think we can do it. So we're going to make this trade, not a great one probably doesn't project out long term to be the best but at least he's on the other side of the country and we know that we can turn the philadelphia faithful against them and so i don't blame flyers fans one bit for booing this guy i get it but i think you need to know when
Starting point is 01:16:28 you're being suckered by a management group that very clearly very clearly has you know they had plenty of time to prepare for carter hart they had plenty of time to prepare another goalie other than Ivan Fedotov sign a veteran do anything well no they got Sammy Erson and they uh got uh Kolosov also who they managed to bring overseas they did try things it's just none of it has worked Stephen Kevin Lankanen was available until after training camp oh forget Kevin Lankanen I'll give you one uh I just now the the timing of this doesn't quite line up because the Flyers traded Gauthier before this player became available but it would have been great for the Flyers if the stars and planets lined up like could the Flyers have topped a package
Starting point is 01:17:25 of Magnus Krona David Edstrom and a conditional first round pick in 2025 for what Yaroslav ask her of sure hot you know what damn you know what's crazy when a player asks for a trade and they're not calling you back you don't have to trade them right away you don't have to make a bad move now i think and i think i think jamie drysdale is a fine player but if you're telling me they maximize value for jamie drysdale they didn't and the way to smoke screen that was to demonize cutter goche that's what they did and and and the dude listen it's the open secret there are players that all you hear about whenever this criticism is brought up is like yeah but this guy loves him that's one guy talk to the other hundred this is not a popular coach especially
Starting point is 01:18:15 with young players agents actively avoid this player that coach's team beat cutter's coach's team uh that coach's team beat cutter go chase team six nothing that's great good for them and the ducks i'm happy for nowhere near the flyers well that's not really true that's actually not true at all yeah the ducks are looking better and better better and better finally who do you think i don't know to have a better future ducks or philly in the next three years whose core do you take and i love travis oh i take the ducks gold uh i it's an end no man like i i can't help but feel like the flyers are like a blackwood trade away so you're talking being relevant you're talking yeah i'm talking about the next three years though they're a blackwood trade away
Starting point is 01:19:00 until the flyers get that goalie i mean i suppose they signed they signed them like they had them fedotov had zero experience they still signed him to that amount of money that's they're paying more for him than the leafs are paying their tandem weird deal yeah the flyers can't get uh 890 goaltending out of anybody right now which is disappointing because i like i agree with steve like they're very close to being something if they could just figure out that stuff in net which is very disappointing. Adam, do you want John Tortorella's comments post-game? I always want Tortorella's comments
Starting point is 01:19:30 post-game. About the Cutter-Gauthier game. Here it is. Obviously, it was very loud. The crowd was really into the game. Do you think you guys fed off of that? And if so, is it good for the young guys to see what this crowd can be like?
Starting point is 01:19:45 I hope we can play in front of a crowd like that about something meaningful. Not the shit that whatever you guys are talking about. I hope it means something to the organization as far as winning and losing. That's when we want to see a crowd like that. Not that it's all this stuff you guys are talking about.
Starting point is 01:20:04 I want it to be that we're a team to be reckoned with in a playoff series or whatever it may be. Not this shit. So I agree with... Great answer. I agree with John Tortorella in the sentiment that we want that to be a playoff game where everybody's showing up, it's sold out,
Starting point is 01:20:21 and everybody's raucous and all that stuff. 100% agree. But I don't like how he characterizes the Cutter-Gauthier narrative as a media-driven narrative and stuff we're talking about. And a couple players did that as well, because it's not a media-driven narrative. It was said by your president, who initially told us that Cutter Gauthier didn't want to be a flyer. And the way the team played on the ice, going at this kid and going at the entire Ducks squad, was clearly they were extra motivated by the situation that was unfolding. And everybody within the Flyers organization for management of the players pretended that the media created the idea that Cutter Gauthier didn't want to be a flyer. How did we know? How did we know? How did any of us know?
Starting point is 01:21:09 Steve, how do we know? I feel like when guys throw the media and they say we're inventing things, that doesn't make sense. I feel like two things can be true at once. Cutter Gauthier handled himself poorly on his way out of Philly, and the Flyers literally led a coordinated propaganda campaign against this guy. Just so you know, it's not us who's bad. It's the 19-year-old.
Starting point is 01:21:35 The 19-year-old that we drafted fifth overall two years ago. That's the enemy here. Was he fifth? No. He was a fifth overall pick. No, he wasn't. Yes, he was. I refuse.
Starting point is 01:21:45 Yeah, the Flyers looked great. They did. They were extra motivated because of the Cutter-Gocci thing. I think it was cool, and I don't know why he has to downplay it and say it's stuff we're talking about. I think you guys in the locker room were talking about it too, Philadelphia Flyers. Yeah, why is Travis Connecting challenging him
Starting point is 01:22:05 to a fight if it's if it's cut or go check for no reason travis connect he did that for no reason connect he has 50 points go chase got 20 that's a trade the ducks take he's tied for fourth on the ducks and scoring uh by the way in philadelphia too and i found this interesting um harris blitzer sports and entertainment and comcast spectator announced a joint venture to build a world-class arena in south philadelphia as well as uh revitalizing marketing so what's interesting about this and i'll just give you a quick shorthand on this one is that the flyers and 76ers were like we want an arena downtown we want an arena downtown we want an arena downtown instead of in south philly where we've all been uh jesse have you been in the south philly's thing where they
Starting point is 01:22:48 have the baseball the football and the hockey all in the same spot yeah we went to a uh 76ers game together did we not no that was in washington yeah uh no then okay no yeah that was comcast live is pretty cool like it's actually really convenient the parking's great like all that i've been to a flyers game and i've been to a philly's game there you go and uh and to be honest it was what's interesting about this is these guys went to city council got approval to build the 76ers got an approval to build the arena downtown got the mayor behind it got everything and then promptly agreed to this deal and the reason they did that was just as a negotiation ploy so they were going to take this arena go downtown in philadelphia and be their own thing and then all
Starting point is 01:23:36 the locals super against it yes the locals were super against it because they have a district for it it works great for philadelphia i don't know that the makeup of the city that well but from what i understand it's the it's the best way to make it accessible and they're going to build it right next to where the arena is now and and revitalize them market east and it's just i just thought you guys would find that hilarious they're like yeah we got all city council on board and promptly said go philadelphia yourself it's uh it is what are you nuts yeah it's hilarious there was the the comment from jimmy harity i was pulling it up here he's a city council member and he says i'm so livid right now i don't even know what to do i feel as though i was used as a pawn you were
Starting point is 01:24:22 jimmy you were congratulations you have discovered what you are and that is a pawn yeah they're staying where they should be yeah yeah politicians are fucking useless yeah but would you okay steve let's be honest here what do you mean do you think there's a lot do you think there's a lot of talent at city level no based on any city politician where's their talent that's what i'm saying where's their talent that's what i'm saying like if you're going talent you're going national how many times is it like dude with a lot of money or corporation with a lot of money goes to politician and they just go you know they play with them like fucking action figures yes and then it's like an action figure it's like if all the toy story toys were indignant
Starting point is 01:25:05 like i can't believe andy's playing with me right now like no that's what you are because you're useless and you fucking stink and you should be ashamed and i hate you anyway sorry continue well it's a little bit like what the morellos did they went around showed everybody their blueprints for the arena and even the nhl was fooled by that yeah they might be the only non-useless ones is uh because they kept going no yeah no we don't believe you no um now it's so with the deal is it's very funny because when they announced the like revitalization of where everything is now they left a space for the basketball slash hockey arena and then they weren't agreeing they're like oh we're gonna move and then eventually they're like yeah you know that piece where we left out
Starting point is 01:25:48 for the basketball arena that's exactly where it's going so you are now on record um giving approval to something none of the citizens wanted and that was never a plan by the way and now you don't even get that so you don't even get the uh the friggin corporate stroke job that you thought you were gonna get looks good on you fucking useless yeah well i don't know why you're so mad oh i know i'm mad at all of them i'm just mad at all of them name a good one you can't fuck off uh now i don't know i don't know there's some drama on friday i do want to talk about because again boston's downfall is upon us at least for now and we're here for it and we're going to take every advantage to enjoy it now i don't know jesse can we run the jones because it's radio
Starting point is 01:26:30 can we run the clip you can just run the you can just read the the okay i'll just read the comment So Jones and Keefe is on a station called WEI. That's a big sports station in Buffalo. Boston. Sorry, Boston. Boston, excuse me. That's the one that Tom Brady used to appear on, right? Like, it's a big station.
Starting point is 01:26:49 I don't know. And they basically said, the locker room is a disaster, and David Pasternak is at the center of that. Pasternak has told the team he doesn't want to play on a line with Brad Marchand, and it may stem from Brad Marchand calling Pasternak out for some of his play.
Starting point is 01:27:04 Now, I have, and I know we can run this, the actual audio and video of Brad responding to this at practice. You have it. I sent it to you just now. I just sent it to you. No, I mean, like, it's the Boston Bruins Twitter account. No, it's me exclusively. No one else has seen this video. Adam, again, got the CCTV footage.
Starting point is 01:27:21 Except for the million people that saw this video. But if you're not one of them, it's exclusive to us. The Boston Bruins Twitter account posting this like minutes after everything unfolded was pretty hilarious. So here's what you got to listen to how Marchand handles this, because you can see him going towards the issue and then trying to back it down. And then he ratchets up the intensity. Have a listen. You know, what was said in the media this morning, you know, it's unfortunate. I know reporters have a job to do. And, you know, that job is report. on the team and and usually you try to be fact based um but when there's just blatant lies
Starting point is 01:28:03 told in the media that's where there's a problem and the fact that this guy has a platform and he's just making stuff up is embarrassing and there's zero truth to anything that he said on the radio this is how you lose your job very quickly the fact that he's gonna have a job after this is insane because pasta and i are best friends um we've had an incredibly close relationship for a long time the only reason we'll play together is so that we can spread depth throughout the lineup there's zero truth to him being a problem in the room he's one of the most loved guys in the room uh there's zero issues in the room at all and the fact that they say that he's in the center of anything is a completely fabricated lie so this guy has zero merit to anything he's saying
Starting point is 01:28:50 It's very frustrating because this is what happens obviously we have not pulled our weight this year We have not had the season that we wanted to have. Oh, but I'm not gonna let some random guy come in the media and just spit absolute nonsense God, I almost said bullshit. I hate how good he is. So I mean from this point forward this guy has zero credibility The fact that he's coming out with this is ridiculous, it's embarrassing Um, and, uh, you know, it just, anything that he puts forward in the future is, is, is now not going to be deemed as truth because he's completely just making all of this up.
Starting point is 01:29:30 And, uh, you know, it's unfortunate if he would have done some kind of fact, he probably just made this up. If not, if he didn't, if he would have fact check, he would have found out that it's all nonsense. Oh, Brad, you were doing so well. Yeah. No, there's no truth to this. Uh, it's ridiculous, um, that now that we even have to address it, I wasn't going to
Starting point is 01:29:47 address. I wasn't going to talk about it, but I'm not going to let it become something that it's not. So this guy can go pound sand, go back to the closet where he was before. That's a good one. And report on nothing because that's what he's going to be doing after this.
Starting point is 01:30:04 I've never heard a hockey player talk for two minutes straight. Awesome stuff. Pound sand. That's a very good dad non-swear. Very good dad non-swear. The reason I was sort of doing the wrap it up uh motion is i i mean that's that's 11 out of 10 um for most of it
Starting point is 01:30:24 i think as far as uh uh a response yeah this yeah it's an 11 out of 10 and then i it started to get into i think the captain doth protest too much uh a little bit like what okay i found it a little odd that he was like anything this guy says in the future has no credibility what are you worried something else is gonna come out like what what was all that about but beyond that i mean fuck that's a captain yeah i think you're missing a little you're missing the uh forest for the trees a little bit there you think i don't know if that's i think he i think brad took it too far when he said that because oh yeah yeah absolutely i agree with steve and the reason i say that is only because he's like brad is literally like okay you want to you're gonna mess with me i'm gonna
Starting point is 01:31:06 i'm gonna tell bruins fans to never listen to you and you'll never be right about anything ever again in your entire career yeah that's what he's in city and should be fired no but that like even if his information's wrong he might be right he went back at him like you're you're at he's supposed to go to 12 you know because the guy went at 12 at him and he's coming back at him and all of the stuff like obviously because this is the same dude who had the jim montgomery report before everybody he was he was hours oh the host the whole the same the same guy on wei who said this about marshall and passionate had montgomery uh a full like morning before it actually oh so he was correct though he was correct he said it was gonna happen and then it happened like later that
Starting point is 01:31:53 evening so it wasn't even like uh it took like it happened minutes later no he was in on this in locker room drama and he knows he's connected to the bruins in some way so i think brad did the right thing by trying to discredit everything because this guy is clearly credible and he's trying to throw salt on it. Now, here's where Brad might screw up, though.
Starting point is 01:32:18 If I'm that guy, I just... Do you want to know what that guy did? What did he do? Today. Oh, today. Yeah, that's why I'm trying to... That's why I want to say something. Here's what he said, and I can't play it again. Respectfully, he said,
Starting point is 01:32:33 respectfully, if I just wanted clicks if i was just out for attention wouldn't i be making up stories about the patriots or the red socks teams with much bigger oh and he's got a point he's like and then he said who's more likely to lie here who's got more skin in this game is it me or is it him okay uh again no that's fine i mean you gotta give me some yeah give me something yep so i will see what happens but he did have the monty stuff as jesse pointed out yeah and nothing the the we'll see what's gonna happen nothing's gonna happen this is kind of the beginning of the end of the story what's gonna hurt brad here is he goes this guy has zero credibility going forward and but what if the
Starting point is 01:33:14 guy keeps getting things right but like what well i don't know i don't know enough about get this right well you can't you can't prove that they don't like each other because these two individuals will always be like no we like each other so like there's nothing to prove here unless he he breaks a trade but even then it's like that's not you're not proving anything it's kind of a okay it's a he said she said situation and will always be that that's why i'm like this is the beginning of the end of the story well i appreciate that i appreciate both guys kind of like i don't yeah i don't think he just made it up but i appreciate him not backing down and i appreciate marshan being a captain and sticking up for his friend and the whole room and putting it,
Starting point is 01:33:59 he somehow found a way to put it back on him. Like the reason this stuff is getting said is because we're not holding up our end of the bargain. 10 out of 10. When he said that, I was like, okay, that's accountability.
Starting point is 01:34:10 There's somebody who knows what to say. Oh, my kingdom for this season. Locker room accountability. The least version of that would have been, they're not available for comment. Or if somebody did come out, they'd be like,
Starting point is 01:34:20 yeah, it's just you guys. Yeah. I was hating the Leafs too. we're not talking about that stuff you know whatever you guys are talking about we're not you guys you guys that's exactly what they would say it's it's like what torts did with the flyers meeting oh you guys shut after after jones and pre-error on the pre-game broadcast with cutter about cutter go james no this this was incredible i think the talking for two minutes about this
Starting point is 01:34:41 well the whole clip's like 340 so yeah him him going off on this and being long-winded in this answer i think was so cool to see somebody to respond to it directly yeah it's great um now Now, there's one last thing I want to do. I was going to play the Daniel Sprung clip, but I'm not going to. I want to get into this because this is... Steve, whenever I say the salary cap is going to go up, Steve goes, no, it's not. And I did it last year.
Starting point is 01:35:10 I said, it's going up. It's going up. I said, it's going up. 87 and a half. We'll see. I'm not interested in where it's going. We'll see. I'm not interested in where it's going.
Starting point is 01:35:19 Tell me where it is. Now, people are still saying, well, it should be 92 and a half. Alan Walsh gave us the answer on Agent Provocateur on Friday. Please watch this show because not only does it, it has a great breakdown of what's going on with the LA Fires, of which his house is pretty darn close to what's happening. Oh my God, the first 10 minutes of that show, just unbelievable stuff.
Starting point is 01:35:38 He also goes deep on Hockey Canada and the World Junior stuff. I haven't gotten that far. Oh, that's at the end of the episode. And we talk a little bit about salary deferral with the Frankfurt-Toronto deal and how that actually works and what the cap implications are, which is great. That was good. But he, in that segment, says what the cap will be next year.
Starting point is 01:36:00 What is it? Do you want me to let you tell? I'm going to let him tell you. This is why you need to be listening to Agent Provocateur. It's a very, very, very good show. I don't know how many times I need to be like pounding on the door. Guys, this show is awesome. Listen to what Alan has to say.
Starting point is 01:36:17 All right. I am not divulging any confidences here. i'm not divulging any inside information per se but i am telling you right now the upper limit the salary cap next year will be 97 million dollars write it down put it in the bank it's coming that's the number all right 97 million is that like a clip 40 is that a clip that we've put on socials yet it's out there it's out there there's there's the the the blogs have picked it up oh so probably cited us i'm sure so i'm just i'm just asking everybody i'm asking everybody to believe in the 97 including you my friend
Starting point is 01:37:02 can you believe in the 97 but even dreams i believe in alan walsh and i believe in the nhl's ability to take away good things well this is the problem is they can't they can't otherwise they're screwed until they announce it a pessimist until they yeah when it comes to the nhl yeah but the pa is different now with literally with the last guy he collected a check and did nothing listen we know that i understand that they are in debt to me they are in debt to me and my trust and if they get 97 right okay good all right great now next year i will be more willing to listen to early numbers okay until they well here's the thing you won't have to worry about next year because this deal that they come to is going to take care of the next
Starting point is 01:37:57 two years so you're gonna know what the calculation is so that outside observers like us would be able to pretty pretty well predicted great well it's time to pay off that and i think i think we're going to see a cap in three years at 110 million dollars that's my bet it's going to be like this year it'll be 97 the next year it'll be 102 103 and then it'll be 110 it's going up baby all right now are we doing a press conference or are we wrapping sure we can do a quick one all right let's do it two in five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of

Starting point is 01:39:10 The Steve Dangle Press Conference They're in debt Steve, how's your rink? It got a little soft just because the temperature went up a little bit. Temperature's going to dip tonight, so I'll give it a thin layer and
Starting point is 01:39:30 should be good. How's Leo like on it? Loves it. He was on the rink. He was on the ice, I think, every day for seven or eight straight days, either in our backyard or at hockey school. He loves it. Yeah, hockey school was Saturday morning,
Starting point is 01:39:47 right? Yeah. Yeah, that's fun. It's fun stuff. He's like, Daddy, Daddy, I'm doing my inside edges because I keep... He skates on his left inside edge and his right outside for some reason. and i keep going nobody inside and then every time he does it he's like look and i'm like no listen to your coaches but he goes and looks into the stands he goes look i'm doing it i love him
Starting point is 01:40:10 i love my kids man a lot of people like i don't think we've ever had as much reaction as we had uh coming out of friday's episode about people telling us the hockey airbud movie was mvp most valuable primate that's the one we forgot it wasn't an airbud hockey movie it was most valuable primate where the monkey was was the hockey player there's also a skateboarding one and a snowboarding one that the monkey takes place uh it has has movies of there's things he's in three movies but that is produced by the airbud people so it might exist in the airbud universe is al borland in it i don't know i didn't go that deep all i know is what's the monkey's name that's a good question uh air monkey i don't know um you know what like it didn't even include
Starting point is 01:41:05 it in the wikipedia article that i was reading and i know wikipedia is never wrong but never perhaps on this one they might have jack jack is a three-year-old chimpanzee damn and he's the he's the mvp at three that's a that's a guy you watch once he's off that elc that's gonna be a mega deal i don't even think the team's gonna be able to afford him at eight years they're gonna have to bridge him uh jack is the subject of an experiment involving sign language performed by dr kendall at san pablo university in san diego and then uh kendall's gonna lose research and then this seat okay no meanwhile the westover family i was gonna say a lot of this wouldn't make sense if the monkeys like californian and uh they're playing hockey
Starting point is 01:41:54 you know because you want you want a canadian tie to that you want to winter climb to that that would make more sense as a movie plot but they there's a family in like bc that um that they get for the monkey to play with there's a whole there's a whole backstory there got it yeah and they qualify for the harvest cup final in vancouver against the calgary polar bears and jack eventually wins wouldn't every calgary polar bears i like that wouldn't every hit be high yeah he's like what three foot five how tall is this player it's a monk it's the chimpanzee it's quite small now would you allow a six foot eight gorilla to play a gorilla a lot of people also pointed out um which i think was a fascinating stuff the strike zone
Starting point is 01:42:46 of the dog how the hell does that work super small yeah like it's it's a cheat code it's what i mean you can't throw it too low right no like you're just basically throwing in the dirt you're throwing essentially at its face who's the dude who played on the oakland a's who basically like scratched his knuckles on the ground every time he threw the ball like uh you know who i'm talking about he had a really funny like the sidearm like an underhand yeah yeah i don't remember his name right he just looks weird is there was that was his uh his defect oh you mean in moneyball the movie you watched is it no oh are you no it's the picture picture or it's the picture like it's from a movie but the movie is real life no but that did that picture exist or
Starting point is 01:43:32 It's not just simply in the movie. I don't care about Moneyball as much as you guys. I got to be honest. Hey, don't say you guys. Both of you are. It's Chad Bradford is what he's talking about. Both of you just are really into Moneyball. That's his name, Chad Bradford, with the weird delivery.
Starting point is 01:43:48 You're kidding. No, that's his name, Chad Bradford. His defect is he throws funny and has a dumb name. He's a submarine pitcher. Love it. Well, I found that funny about that movie because one of the best Oakland A's of all time had a weird delivery, and it's Dennis Eckersley.
Starting point is 01:44:04 And I'm like, oh, okay. So we just forgot that Dennis Eckersley existed. Okay, cool. No, I'm just checking. Just checking. No, it's his defect. Anyway, I had a comment here from Brady, who brings up a guy who eventually will turn
Starting point is 01:44:22 into a pumpkin and is a fraud. The Jesse Blake Helly Challenge has taken a shocking turn. Helly now has a 928 save percentage. You're so cooked. currently has the same amount of shutouts as regulation losses. You're so cooked. The half-season award projection has him with 16 of 16 first-place votes, I assume, for the Vesna.
Starting point is 01:44:43 He's going to win the Vesna. Any thoughts? I'm saying, yeah, you can win a Vesna with a 919. Jesse, I need you to understand. Connor Hellebuck, after you said he wouldn't hit 920, is currently having one of the best regular seasons of probably the last, like, 20 years. Yeah, like, make a Kiprasoft level.
Starting point is 01:45:05 Carey Price, I would say. Yeah, but, like, compared to even the rest of the league, right? Because save percentages are, like, I don't know what Carey Price's save percentage was the year he won the heart. But relative to the league, Hellebox 928 is probably better than Price's when he won MVP.
Starting point is 01:45:25 That is a very good question. we should uh we should check that at some point like how far ahead of the pace is hellebuck in comparison to how far ahead was carrie price his safe percentage the year he won the oh my goodness he was crazy won the heart and vesna and jennings and pearson was a 933 933 and how many games in 66 starts that is that's unreal not yeah but uh league average was like what 9 11 9 12 right i don't so i don't know actually what it would have been hellebuck is now a 9 28 when league average i think is around 905 904 903 so how many like that how many percentage are you above the mean he is but to even the fact we're even having this conversation that
Starting point is 01:46:25 they're somewhat comparable oh jesse you're cooked i don't even remember like what was the bet i just thought he wouldn't have a safe percentage over 920 because if you look at the history of goaltending it is very hard to have three consecutive seasons of a 920 and above and he's done it the last two seasons and it's only like in the last uh 20 years it's been like broder's done it was done it price has done it and like that's it amongst the list and i didn't think that hellebuck would enter that category this season so i took a bet on him not having a 920 this season and he's gone out and had a 928 in his who has one of the best goaltender performances since like carrie price of of like the cap era like it's on one hand you can count
Starting point is 01:47:14 the better seasons it's probably like price it might be one finger yeah yep um carrie price we always whenever bring him up it's a travesty he only got one vesna oh my god it's insane i don't know how that that that plays out but one vesna for carrie price it's one of those stats that doesn't seem real like crosby having two scoring titles that that blew my freaking mind and price having one vesna it just doesn't make sense one but i guess i don't know you'd have to go back to the years and see like did could this did somebody just beat him out every year barely you know well it's it's a little let's be honest mark bergevin rode the reins of whoever was the gm before was a gainey who drafted really well and they won a they won division titles and they were super good
Starting point is 01:48:00 and then around 2015 2016 it all kind of fell off and carrie price had he had a better team in front of him i think would have won more you'd have to go back and look the the i mean the most egregious one bless the guy i don't want to pick on him uh jim carrey the net detective uh winning i think it was the 96 vesna nope not sometimes sometimes whoever votes on these awards gets a little hipster about it too it's like no i'm smarter his record was very good but the best goalie in the league get out of my face yeah like i usually go to hashik but i want to say the other guy uh had a good year i think chris haw is good and was it darren pupa the other guy okay like he wasn't... No, back then it would have been like
Starting point is 01:48:43 Mike Vernon. You could argue... Because Osgood wasn't even the starter in Detroit until 98. You could argue Carey shouldn't have even been nominated. Anyone. Yeah. Stop. Yeah. What are we doing? There you go. Alright. So, are we... Anything else? No? That's it.
Starting point is 01:48:59 That's it. Cool. Do you have anything to add, Steve? Nope. Coburg? This Friday, guys. That's fun. We're driving to Coburg this Friday. Steve, how many goals did you score at hockey on Friday? None.
