Starting point is 00:06:09 I'm looking up Quiznos. And there is a Firehouse Subs. Not the same. Not the same. No, I'm not saying Firehouse isn't like a Firehouse could be even better. But it's just not the same. It's not Quiznos. It is quite good.

Starting point is 00:06:20 Right now. You know what else is good? Bond Street. Where will be? i uh i want to um obviously the the elephant in the room uh if you're not i'm working on it man that's such a bullshit thing to call your friend if you're mark specter is referring to evan when we mentioned this elephant in the room uh that like six times it was getting a little weird it was weird uh we get it we get it it's a theme we get it i guarantee back the theme in the face

Starting point is 00:06:50 but he was sitting there like workshopping it going elephant room evanphant could i do evanphant zoo shard yeah because he's at the zoo yeah oh evan evanphant zoo shard delete delete delete delete no no um doesn't work doesn't work let's let's uh let's talk about this The elephant in our room is that the Toronto Blue Jays lost in extra innings in game seven. They were two outs away from beating the Los Angeles Dodgers. And, you know, I want to I've got some shout outs and things that I want to do. We can talk about whatever. But the first thing I want to say is I want to know how Jesse got home because the city of Toronto.

Starting point is 00:07:39 Oh, this tweet. And it said, reminder, we know the game is running late, but transit won't wait. the final go train leaves union station soon and the last ttc train is around 1 30 check your schedules as in hey you might have to get home after this game but don't look to us go fuck yourself um i tweeted about that i said this city has an untenable situation and people were like yeah fuck olivia chow and i'm like oh my god and i was like wow oh yeah toronto's traffic problems began with olivia chow why did they not not to stand up for any politician i didn't mention a politician this city is untenable all right who would think that writing this tweet is a good

Starting point is 00:08:22 idea well it's probably someone social media intern who's working late on a friday that no it's the city of toronto it's not an intern it is a well-paid social media professional yeah and i don't like when people call like they'll see a sports team's brand they'll call the social meet a person to intern that person is getting a full-time salary that's a big job josh matlow who is was was at city government i think he still is uh anyway he was he said i'll be raising this at tomorrow's ttc board meeting and here's what's going to happen he'll raise it they'll throw it around and uh we'll never hear about it again can you read the first line again just for the people a reminder reminder shithead we know the game's running late but transit won't wait the final go

Starting point is 00:09:02 train leaves union station soon and the last ttc train is around 1 30 a.m check schedules as in go fuck yourself they should have had a contingency plan well they do for new year's they do so new year's in toronto for people who aren't aware the trains and buses run all night long and it's free yeah because you don't want people drunk driving home or drunk walking home or yeah just get them home and this has got to be the biggest night of the year for people going out in toronto to see a thing yeah besides new year yeah imagine if they had one oh imagine if they had one it's clear they had no i mean i'm sure the police had a plan but i'm it's pretty clear that transit had no plan if they want yeah you know what the police love

Starting point is 00:09:45 thousands of people aimless and stranded and standing around and drunk yeah yeah oh that would have been great there was a follow-up to this because the i don't know if he's the president or whatever the hell his role is but one of the guys high up at the ttc quote tweet or followed up on this tweet being like hey the ttc isn't responsible for this thing this is the city of toronto and metro links because the ttc actually has 90 of their service run overnight they have a thing called blue light buses oh yeah and their streetcars run overnight so they distance themselves from this tweet and they said this is on metro links i don't know what's going on with them so this is specifically a metro link slash go transit problem because they shut down

Starting point is 00:10:27 the up and they shut down the trains around their regular time which they very shouldn't do you know So what I love about the Up Express is, so there's this thing in Toronto, it's called the Up Express, and it's supposed to get you up to the airport, which isn't in Toronto, even though it's called the Toronto International Airport. It's in Jesse's home city of Mississauga, bigger than Winnipeg, but really an adjacent city to a massive city. Mississauga, if you were to drive and not see any signs, just looks like it's a part of Toronto in terms of, like, the city just never ends.

Starting point is 00:10:52 It's West Toronto. Yeah. And I know Mississaugans will not like that, but it's kind of true. Like, there's like an invisible line, and then all of a sudden it's Mississauga and Brampton. but the the point of the up express was to get people to um uh to be able to you know take transit to the airport which is awesome and i've used it many times it's actually so good problem is when you get on that even though it's a part of this thing called metro lakes oh what a cool

Starting point is 00:11:17 name they they they said because legally it's considered light rail or subway they didn't legally have to put bathrooms on the train so you're on that train for 40 35 40 minutes especially with that many people coming off because there's multiple stops along the way and there's and they're drunk and there's nowhere to pee and i don't know why that's still the case that is 100 still there's still no bathroom on the no bathroom on the we don't legally have to put it okay what about morally your garbage you need to go what about morally your sub well they said for being like we don't need to put a bathroom on the but well the person said to me when i asked her there was somebody who's very nice worked for metro links when i was up on it years ago and

Starting point is 00:11:58 they were like well we don't put them on the subways and i said yes i understand that but the subways are roughly two minutes between stops the subways also smell like piss they also put them on their other train yeah well that's a go train it's not light rail though that's that's heavy rail that's crazy isn't that nuts and they never like fixed that no since nope and that's been running because they'd have to order it from bombardier and they but that then they're on bombardier time which is next decade maybe so oh we all we all know how bad it is but what was funny is after this started getting tweeted about and making the rounds a lot of people who aren't from here but are planning to come for the world cup are like but this is going to be better for

Starting point is 00:12:38 the world cup right i'm like oh oh my sweet summer child no it will not say for the world cup and people did point this out because i said like hey we have the world cup coming i even tweeted that uh the games are a lot more contained than a baseball game is but regardless of that do you think that the city would like plan for more trains no no they wouldn't like up the schedule or no someone was like well they did they had 24 hours warning that this game was happening and i'm like are you do you think this place is run by children yes apparently it oh adulthood is something we made up yeah it we made it up like money it's adulthood money it's all made up we we came up with it from our imagination um you plan as if every game is going to happen

Starting point is 00:13:23 and every game is going to extra innings or or or there is another option you're so dumb you're such a stupid person yeah what are they what's the old adage it's probably that one plan yeah uh what is it uh fail to plan plan to fail if you fail to plan you will plan to fail i get schedule and then listen cut it's i understand that's very your mother would say my mother would say that she'd also say pull up your boots that sounds like a maryland dennisism absolutely but i you know what we stand maryland and we do how dare you talk about maryland like that how dare you this podcast is just an extension of the maryland maryland dennis universe yeah it is like we you we are branded as the mcu mdu mdu sorry yes are we just guardians

Starting point is 00:14:15 of the galaxy for chum fm yeah yeah oh no yeah yeah anyway i'm the raccoon you're the bad paul rudd character that comes in you're like okay oh no i'm gonna be b dude oh no why did they really really shoehorned him in there they really need paul rudd you're totally normal except you can get really big but you're easy to kill and really small ants love you yeah i don't know garbage cool no that's us that's mdu that's why i like him the boys when he's just like what's your power oh it's this oh and then he just kills him anyway uh anyway uh blue jays lose in in in the saddest game seven fashion and by the way 15 minutes on transit uh toronto i'd rather why do You want to talk about game seven?

Starting point is 00:15:04 Steve, Steve loved that segment. And I needed to throw Steve a bone because he's been he's been Hodor with the with the Toronto Transit for so many months. He's got to let it out. At least this is where he is, especially like like talking to Steve when he's turning onto the DVP and it's just started to rain like you've got to turn the volume on your phone down like it's not. I've been dreading for weeks.

Starting point is 00:15:30 the the the easter seals tournament uh was moved from down the street from my house to the most inaccessible part of the country it is easier to get to the northwest territories than it is to get to near york university i can't believe that that concert venue was still there all summer and people had to slog through that for hours i i cannot believe it i cannot believe it as soon as they announce where it is i'm like well not going what fuck for a hot take a palooza that we record over christmas time when we bank all those episodes adam i dare you for your hot take to do transit in toronto is actually good oh i i can't i can't can we make steve have a heart attack you know what transit is good it's just nowhere adam if you i would take the hour and

Starting point is 00:16:18 a half half hour drive to your house and kick your ass fuck if you have to if if you're like if you've got a tiny little space in toronto that you want to get point a to point b and they happen to build those subways in the 30s for you then you're okay yes and if the signals are working which are also still from the 30s they've never upgraded if you need to go from university to king street oh man there's a subway there for you oh my god i'm gonna get i'm gonna stop off at museum anywhere off of that little uh horseshoe like you're fine like that's it all right now blue jays lost in game seven it was sad now listen in Toronto we're used to game seven losses maybe not not to that level of intensity and certainly um I'll tell you this I asked myself after the game would I rather lose

Starting point is 00:17:06 in game seven the way the Leafs do or the way the Jays do when the Leafs go out in game seven most of the time it's a titanic collapse or just an embarrassing game all the way through I can't name a game seven game where they were totally that close except for the one against boston when sammy was a net and it was i think a two to one or a three to two remember they lost in overtime poster knock that was 2023 still 24 so none of those games were particularly close like none of those games one of them went to overtime yeah yeah no no no but the game seven for the jays had like five opportunities where they could have won yeah yeah yeah 2013 matt fratton had a breakaway loophole hit a post that's maybe the closest thing 2019 sammy was just

Starting point is 00:18:00 horrible and you know they blew it 2018 they got murdered they did have the lead but they got murdered um and then yeah 20 no we did that one 2019 they got murdered covid was they got killed by the blue jackets killed by the blue jackets killed by the habs like so so all those all those heartbreaks were you don't look at them and go like like that babyish comment that is going over like a fart in a wedding um uh the better team didn't win right i understand passions are high when that happens sure fine great i get it but like the leafs never got that treatment on account they didn't deserve it didn't deserve any time out of any so when i and i i think the comparison it's not it's not direct no i don't think comparing baseball the end of the the game

Starting point is 00:18:55 like having to win to hockey ot is fair because it was in baseball in a tie game say it's extra innings and one hit can do it that if they throw 30 pitches there are 30 instances yes that the game can end there are different animals in what they bring out of the fan and the stress levels and the chances to win the game in baseball it's so um one-to-one in that every single play is going to matter and hockey is just this fluid thing and you're going to get maybe a couple chances there but it's not like every single thing that's happening in every second of hockey is a chance to end the game in baseball it is i'm so that's why baseball is so much fun during these games i'm so sad the jays lost but i'm really looking forward to being

Starting point is 00:19:36 physically healthier like yes i that playoff baseball is an infliction yeah affliction like i i barely survived that damn thing i it was that was hard yeah i don't know how the hell you did it it's one of the best things in sports like that it is amazing when you're when you're watching baseball at its peak it's as good as anything that you can ever watch in pro sports and this is why i find it uh jesse it's such an amazing sport in the sense that at the beginning things are so light and wistful it's like oh we're back from spring training and here we go here's the opening day and all the way through july oh there's an afternoon game today oh look at that there's children there and blah blah blah blah and then by the time august rolls around it's you get

Starting point is 00:20:21 if you're in it there's this sense of like things are sort of tightening up a little bit and then through september with the pen with the pennant races and all that sort of thing you feel it constricting constricting and then the playoffs start and it feels like you've literally been wrapped by the snake and now it's now playoffs ringing you out start in september yeah the you know and but there is no fixed date like there was a time where it really felt like the jays were going to lose the division and varsho hits is either three-run homer or grand slam and kind of saves it and there's another like sliding door moment in the season like what if they don't end up tying the yankees what if they don't have the tiebreaker on the yankees

Starting point is 00:21:04 it's just so good so it was so damn good yeah my question for you is like having done that because that's the first time we've seen the jays go on a run since 15 or 16 and sdpn didn't exist back then and we didn't have like we we had the steve dangle podcast but that that was not what this is and we didn't do live youtube back then it was pretty new at that point anyway having done that you did the 18 innings you did 11 on saturday night um what was it like for you what did you learn what did you take away like what was the what was the experience like can i add numbers to that before you answer that question we add the numbers after let's add the no no no no because i'm trying to put i'm trying to emphasize how much jesse did okay yeah did robert send you this

Starting point is 00:21:53 robert i was he sent it to me too which is why i wanted to but go ahead 64 hours 18 minutes in 59 seconds is how long jesse not 60 seconds not 60 seconds you lazy bum and 172 innings i think that lends to what we were just saying about baseball because adam you're talking about like you get to april and baseball starts it's every day it's constant it's 162 of them and that doesn't just change because the playoffs are around it's every single day it was 18 games over the course of four weeks it was every single day and every single night and it was a blast i can't believe it was only 18 games yeah yeah the four plus seven seven right so that was at least 40 and when you're jam packing in all there like you don't realize when you're when you're living it

Starting point is 00:22:41 with all the streams and doing every single game you you come into the flow of like yeah this thing doesn't stop because that's how baseball operates so i don't know i had a blast did you yeah every single stream was a great time and like it sucks when they lose but you're still having fun with the chat and everything well the chat seemed to love what was going a lot of american people that had no idea who we were found you which was great and i think um let me run you through some numbers so you had 150 oh that's not exactly what i planned i hate it also what's robert doing sending everybody the same prep here i don't know jesus trying to be helpful i know uh well that's a costume for it i uh i i think the the the point is it was very very cool obviously we're not a

Starting point is 00:23:32 network that that covers baseball full-time um but we figured maybe we should there'd be some yeah we'd love to and like there was financial constraints of course yeah 100 you know we're trying we're trying to grow a business here and you know what i thought was amazing about it was the amount of people jesse that that were going yeah we'll just pivot like yo man i usually come in here for hockey or football and maybe f1 but i'm i'm what the hell i'll come and watch jesse do this as well yeah i think that was something that's truly special in the seat and the comments there is uh you get both sides of it right because like i'm there watching game 46 in the season everything and then you get people who are we're also there and they remember

Starting point is 00:24:13 um chad green and yariel rodriguez in those days love lady man the fucking love lady um and they remember losing 12-2 to the orioles on opening day and then you get the people who are like this is my like third ever baseball game i've ever watched and it's the middle of the mariners series and you get those audience i love playoff runs when teams go on runs in cities you see everybody start caring about yeah like my my girlfriend gabby who does not care about sports was out watching game six you know with her friends she's like oh all my friends are going to watch this game like you don't care about this game she's like yeah but everybody's doing it and now i care uh my wife watched one blue jays game all summer and it was one that we went to

Starting point is 00:24:55 and by the end of that series she uh admitted she would die for ernie clement everybody will die for any everybody will die to resign him i hope yeah yeah he's coming back he's coming back now do you all-time leader in hits in a single post that's insane yeah no one's ever had 30 he got 30 my brother-in-law bet so many times he would put parlays together on the bet mgm app and every single second leg of the parlay was ernie clement hit just get ahead like and that's starting from the from the new york money yeah it was crazy like money money glitch money i love that that you get the bandwagon like yeah it's everybody cares about the blue jays no matter where you went in the city it's the first thing on the news everybody's wearing blue jays gear

Starting point is 00:25:36 you get new fans and now hopefully they extend through next season it's fun to see people care about baseball because i love baseball and i love this team so it's good when everybody's caring about it i don't know it's such a joy to see this month when i got into baseball it was like when sean green left and you know that's been such a part of like a feature of toronto especially with sports where we don't have seven teams like we do in the nhl right where there's so many guys that just are like it's not america so i'm leaving and also toronto that time had shitty ownership we've got a pretty solid ownership group now at least we know they're rich and they are spending they had the fourth highest payroll fifth fifth excuse me yeah yeah now the a

Starting point is 00:26:13 lot of the guys that they are paying a lot of that money to were not in the lineup santander burrios are two guys that there's 40 million bucks right there not in the lineup burrios there's a story to be written there uh i'd like to know what happened not in the dugout not around the team so he uh definitely had some hurt feelings about something or just didn't want to be around because there was lots of guys who were not on the roster just hanging out in the dugout you're allowed to be there like sure scherzer was there when he wasn't in the lineup there's uh some of the relief pitchers who were not on it but burrios i wonder around the team and there's been no conversation about that no nothing he's posted nothing on socials like we've been looking at and like

Starting point is 00:26:45 jay's uh twitter has been going through it like he's i don't know where he is how anyway that's sorry no no i think that's interesting i was wondering this i was actually going to ask the question but i think what's what's interesting and obviously baseball to me baseball doesn't need a cap baseball needs a floor um like i and baseball is probably gonna get both in 2027 but the you know teams like the pirates who are run by a criminal in my mind not he's not like an actual criminal but i think it's criminal what he's doing to the city of pittsburgh it's a disgrace to the sport it's it's just it's disgusting they haven't signed a free agent in like six years um they are you know it's such a shame because baseball really is one of those

Starting point is 00:27:26 things that everybody can sort of understand like even if the leafs ever did go on like a real run like last year was the closest we got this this spring was the closest we got the rules in hockey are far more complex in baseball yes there are tiny little you know whatever rules but everybody kind of gets it here's what's fair here's what's foul three outs three strikes you're out three outs the inning switches over like it's simple easier to learn and baseball is so accessible from the fan standpoint of view because uh there's 81 home games and there's 50 000 seats i've seen people who can like never dream about going to a leafs playoff game at a bunch of blue jays playoff games because they can sit in the 500s and enjoy the game just be there in that stadium

Starting point is 00:28:08 and bring your own food and bring your own food and it's a family event you mill the summer you want a ticket for 30 bucks 20 bucks they have the outfield district now where it's just cheap standing room tickets you can get in and go enjoy with your friends you don't have to care about the game just go there have a beer and just have a good time you know what you see at jay's games groups of five or more yeah yeah yeah groups of friends instead of like a pair because oh you got the one pair of tickets because your boss gifted to you because your corporation has yeah and tickets that's how you get into least games here you just buy them with a bunch of people i think the biggest group of people i've ever been in the stands with is four like and it's like the three

Starting point is 00:28:46 of us plus like cj yeah yeah i've been to 11 billion games that's not true actually but i've been to more than most and uh yeah four i think is the cap even when the jays were bad though like when we were in our early 20s we'd all find ways to go toony tuesdays oh my god that was a real thing that was a thing you get 500 level seats for two dollars when i was like a child it was you couldn't afford not to go you had to go so anyway so yeah just a wax poetic on baseball that love the sport it's a romantic sport it is and it's dramatic and unbelievable and as exhausted as we all were especially you jesse and by the way i do want to shout justin out too justin was robert robert was amazing they're on every single one it was great um i want to talk a little bit

Starting point is 00:29:31 though about the home run balls from rojas and smith because they were caught by a father and son who are both jace fans so a father caught one wait what yeah yeah so they i don't know how it's possible it's never it but this is very baseball that this would happen yeah father and son catch both rojas and smith home runs that lead to the dodgers title they are seeking 2.5 million dollars us for both balls and i think wait combined or each combined okay because the paul remember the paul skeen story we talked about yeah of the card with the rookie card yeah that person got didn't that person get like three million dollars and then there was somebody else that caught like a crazy home run ball and they got three million dollars for that i'm thinking if you got the home

Starting point is 00:34:16 now one of the things that that is interesting about how this happens is the blue jays obviously have access to a wider national audience which hockey teams do not right we've got seven of them uh and i wanted to i wanted to hear your thoughts on the games but also your thoughts on the because there's you know there was fans in vancouver when the mariners and jays were playing that were like well i'm a mariners fan because i don't like rogers or whatever and that's fine like you be a fan of whatever you want but it's a um it's because of the telecom in some cases sure or some cases it's it's the mariners are closer like that's fine like whatever yeah just that's the one that makes sense yeah that's fine you don't need to retcon you being better than everyone

Starting point is 00:35:01 um shut up the the thing though that's interesting is that uh commissioner rob manfred is going to be done in 2029 and he has already said he'd like to get some expansion on the books and has not ruled out canadian teams we'd all like to see a team back in montreal but do you guys think that this this country could support a toronto montreal and vancouver uh three-way baseball situation before the 2030s i know montreal could i know they could yeah vancouver is big enough to the question is is the interest there and i would say it is oh i think they love baseball out there well they all they all fly down to seattle or they all swim across the street to me to seattle um when uh when the jays are there i'm just you know it's it's what you know one weekend a year

Starting point is 00:35:46 does not a season make right i think there's uh some people working with the mariners right now going no they can't they can't do it trust me bro um well baseball though has a problem with a few of their teams being non-factors like we criticize like the coyotes the coyotes and the way they operate things baseball's got like three of them like so expansion is a lovely idea but they have several markets that are just dying no no they died years ago and we're just weekend at bernie's like with some of these guys um and i wonder if they consider relocation i don't know if if they could stomach moving an american team to camp no i think they're talking about expanding yeah well that's your response and you're not moving the pirates the pirates are a legendary

Starting point is 00:36:46 franchise you can't do that i think they're going to try to kick the owner out in that case that is fine that's what they're rob manfred said we got to do something what about a team he says sell the damn team what about a team like the marlins oh i don't know about that one i think it'd be really cool to have those teams in canada but adam you'd know best about the economics of it you think it would work from just like the corporate standpoint so in quebec there are enough billionaires uh where you look at you look at it's interesting because business in quebec is is a challenge sometimes because of they just do things differently than the rest of north america it doesn't mean it's bad it just means it's different taxes are a little bit higher

Starting point is 00:37:23 to. And so you obviously part of the reasons that I mean, there's a whole documentary on Netflix about why the Expos left. They're complicated, but they needed a new place to play because they were playing in something from the mid 70s, from the Olympics. The Quebec government wasn't about to cough up the money for that. They also had a guy who was in charge who was a total a-hole and nobody likes Jeffrey Loria. But I think Montreal can work for sure because we know there's history there we know there's a desire from Expos fans to get that back um I don't see why it couldn't work maybe they're not one of the highest spending teams in the league but they probably could come in somewhere in the middle and that's good enough to get you deep into the playoffs uh when you look

Starting point is 00:38:06 at Vancouver I what I find interesting about Vancouver is I can't understand why they don't have an NBA team again forget MLB they this is a team that city in the last 20 years has grown economically enormous and population wise too it's it's it does not get enough credit and i don't understand why for how rich it is and you can see that in the unaffordable housing um it's it's there's so much money there and i think there's some great stadiums like bc place would be you could start playing baseball games there and then eventually build a stadium right you wouldn't want to like where the lions play or where there's i don't know enough about it i think you could for sure have that i mean if you have that much support for the cfl which i guess is

Starting point is 00:38:53 you know granted once a week you can have that support for baseball seattle i think is going to get that nba team before vancouver whatever being the supersonics are coming back it seems like nashville is the easy one for major league baseball to go to next i know there's two groups already like forming their plans for a stadium and all that stuff to try and get mlb to get over there and then salt lake city as well seems like they want in on ryan smith gets another team right you might honestly why not so those would be the two cities that are really in contention with any of the canadians ones for getting a team it's a it's a tough battle for the 31 32nd team they could do they could montreal's like the easier sell because there's at least a proof of concept

Starting point is 00:39:34 you know what i mean like hey we had a team here but you need a place to play that's the thing in Montreal yeah and Canadian bureaucracy is undefeated we love to stop progress here this is the frustrating thing with a with a lot of Canadian expansion conversations across sports oh yeah we got the economy we got the people uh all right where do they play oh listen you're getting bogged down where the hell do they play yeah look how long it took them to get a new saddle dome out there in Calgary like that arena needs to go like 10 years ago and now they're finally got there when i let the jets come back and put them in the old one like just throw them there you know oh but it's 14 000 yeah but it's like big right no it's like so small yeah actually

Starting point is 00:40:21 yeah but they renovated it yeah oh maybe you renovate a little do they renovate it bigger yeah no and like well the oilers are so lucky that they got their new arena because rexall place what is that place yeah the rogers arena i don't know what it was i don't fuck whatever the rex all the rogers arena is there rogers the new one beautiful it's gorgeous awesome and the old one was junk you know you know what they the ownership was able to first off they threatened to leave back in the day when i was in calgary and everybody's like yeah okay like that's gonna happen second thing is that downtown edmonton needed revitalization and this was the perfect thing to build it around now i don't think downtown vancouver needs revitalization it's

Starting point is 00:41:01 pretty thriving what a dump vancouver's good with their their hockey arena yeah the baseball thing it'd be you'd have to have some land to build that because you need like a state-of-the-art stadium but yeah there's so many economics that get in the way of just getting a team you know you need the city behind to fund the billionaires uh little toy i think what the billionaires need to consider is how rich do you want to be because you could be richer you you buy this now 10 years from now you're gonna be that's the thing right you need the billionaire to want the thing to get there right yep yeah so i'm curious about that you know what i love about the holidays presents the fact that yeah the presents yes yes uh especially the ones that aren't returned

When, you know, they're showing it, not only showing it,

Starting point is 00:43:50 but they're showing it with sound during the TV time-offs as well. Yeah, it was bizarre. It was bizarre. I found myself watching the Jays game sitting on the bench, you know, listening to the crowd while I'm on the ice, you know, what just happened. It was very strange. But you know what? historic moment um couldn't be more gutted for those guys um you know obviously we know what

Starting point is 00:44:18 that feels like it's uh and to you know for it to be the way it happened you know just completely gutted for those guys um been a fun run and a lot of fun they've given canada a lot to cheer about and they should be very very proud of himself he does know what it feels like yeah i think it was a service i think that that service and and there was a lot of people commenting underneath it who were like i'm an oilers fan and i was there and i loved it because it wasn't during play and that's all that matters it's during tv timeouts and and by the way like he's saying it's distracting buddy you've been to the stanley cup finals and you played in florida check cleared yeah yeah i think you'll be okay calm down check cleared calm down like the oilers were winning though okay i don't

Starting point is 00:45:02 think that's what he says i think it's because they need everything going their way right now because it's been a real struggle for them lately yeah i paid to be here and i wanted to see it calm down fans seem to like it so they could show reruns of friends if the fans like it like they they paid how much money to be there cotter's at the microphone and i'm here i am wondering what happened with joey yeah oh man you go on the date or not sitting there and like does ross get the leather pants off or not i need to know were they on a break like no you know how on tiktok they put the brain rot thing in the corner while somebody's talking like on a podcast clip what if we all consume sports that way we're on the jumbotron it's just like super mario playing someone playing

Starting point is 00:45:47 a jumpy video game through the jungle it's just on the jumbotron at all times while you're trying to watch the hockey game that's what it feels like yeah i i don't know i think uh i i thought um that's that's what play-by-play turns into connor mcdavid has the puck and then he hands it to leon dry settle and they they got that weird staccato robotic voice it's winning that game with the oilers it didn't affect them too much they beat the uh blackhawks three two in overtime this is where hockey sometimes gets like okay it's you're a little bit like it's just a sort of a fart attitude like come on guys oh yeah i think that was a fart out i thought at the end he was great but he was like like when he was talking about hey we've been there we know what

Starting point is 00:46:31 it's like we're on the bandwagon like of course yeah like i thought that was handled beautifully but him him going well it's bizarre it's just bizarre i'm like buddy no it is not now no it is not it is the biggest sporting event in the country right now but i think bigger than yours I think for him to be playing a professional hockey league game and having another game on the Jumbotron is a little bizarre during action. And then during TV timeouts, them turning up the sound. That is bizarre. It is. It's a unique situation.

Starting point is 00:46:59 And if there's a Raptors game scheduled during the gold medal hockey game, I would expect there to be updates like between quarters. That's fair. It's the biggest event. But okay, you expect them to be updates between quarters. do you expect them to show the game live on the jumbotron live is so is that what was happening so during play they had the blue jays game up on the jumbotron oh he made it sound like it was just between play no between play they would turn up the sound on the picture that was on the jumbotron oh so it was that is a little bizarre during play the game was on okay that is weird i thought it

Starting point is 00:47:40 was just tv timeouts tv timeouts they turn up the volume so it was so that's how it would they were doing it at at uh rexall we know that for sure that's what he says no i thought he just said during tv timeout no here i'll play it for you there's no way they showed the game live during oh my goodness guys that i might agree mark spencer would lose hold on hold on hold on let's listen to connor mcdavid a toronto sporting event during an edmonton sporting event he'd Obviously, we're all on the Jays bandwagon and everybody's wanting them to win. No, when he said during the game, I didn't think he meant during play. during the game doesn't mean during play oh yeah and so they did that for the first two periods and then during the third they got rid of that yeah but during the first two periods on the jumbotron while they're playing hockey on the ice the game is showing now i agree with them okay i have to say i agree i was like you guys this is a little bizarre no i thought it was updates when hockey wasn't being played and i'm like calm down no no yeah oh i did not okay yeah no that's a bit odd okay that's a bit odd right it's a strange choice to do it during the play

Starting point is 00:49:40 even though it's silent it's the risk you run like i know people who they're like i i got leave tickets for 100 bucks and it was during i don't remember what game i don't remember if it was the world series or game seven of seattle or whatever it was one other game and they were like i do not want to go i am not looking forward to this i have the ticket but it was so cheap and like i don't know i guess we haven't been faced with a deep jays run in a long time it's tough in a hockey mad country that also friggin loves baseball um like we haven't been faced with this conundrum in 32 years playing like think of how much technology has evolved over the last three plus decades this wasn't an issue yeah unless someone brought a portable radio into the stadium

Starting point is 00:50:39 which i imagine they wouldn't have been allowed and now every single person in attendance has one in their pocket yeah where they can watch it yeah right um yeah showing it live throughout play it's a that is that is odd that's a weird choice i thought it was just during the breaks and yeah you're a bit of you know you're being a baby while i'm playing the crowd's cheering for something else should be cheering for the oilers yeah and you know what you watch it on your phone you go ahead yeah uh like you want to go put on the sports net app which crashed in the world series multiple times uh absolutely you can do that but i don't think i don't think playing it during the game is yeah i get him no no okay we get it we agree with conor mcdavid let's move on

Starting point is 01:00:17 steps and a couple more steps wins you the world i think you could have just won the race but there's a million moments in that game where if one thing goes a different way they win the world series and that's how you get to the heart the the killer for me is like you can look at a base running mistake or oh you just didn't hit it far enough or you didn't hit it to the right spot and you can look at that and i think that is easier to swallow people are forgetting or losing sight of the fact that it ended on a double play from a broken bat that bat doesn't break who on earth knows yeah he drives in a run he's out but you still have another chance you're doing the thing though you're naming one incident but i can name a thousand from that game that if they

Starting point is 01:01:05 just go that other way they win the game yeah i so i did a a video on my channel breaking down the game after on sunday after i could stomach doing it and i talked for two hours and cut it down 45 minutes are you serious yeah because i did everything in the game and it was it's everything like you i walked through every little thing that happened you realize there's a million moments that just happen to go one way and that's how you get to these improbable comebacks or these improbable losses and it's just that's how sports work sometimes and it's just so unfortunate and like i only did game seven if you want to go back to game six on friday night you want to do the barger hit and him getting doubled off at that second there you can do that you want to go the

Starting point is 01:01:50 18 inning game there's a million moments there and unfortunately that's just the reality of sports but i think it was a great season for the jays there's a ton of hurt feelings and just regret but i have to say yoshinobu yamamoto that is one of the most impressive athletic performances i've ever seen he's amazing he's amazing to pitch i think it was like 140 pitches in a 24-hour span and just dude all of us were so angry to see him come out of the bullpen you think in your mind watching baseball for 30 years or whatever it is after a pitcher does that one day yeah oh his arms just noodle he could never pitch again the next day right and then you see somebody just come out and not miss a step from where they left off the last 40 or 50

Starting point is 01:02:41 pitches like i think that's a great way to put it it's in the context of what he's doing there it's up there with any athletic performance that you're seeing it's ever seen it's mcdavid scoring eight goals in a game you know it's tom brady leading 28 to 3 comeback against atlanta in the super bowl yes what yamamoto did there was otherworldly but it's like if mcdavid played 45 minutes in a triple on the first half of a back-to-back and then the next night played like 30 yeah like and was the best player on the ice the whole time uh it was we rejoiced when they pulled him from game six we the whole fan base was like they pulled him early amazing here comes the world series and you can see you can you can read the headline in your head the next day about

Starting point is 01:03:33 how the dodgers could have forced game seven if they didn't pull them early right which we've seen how many times uh you know storylines with pitchers in recent memory and i was like and now it's our turn to benefit from that they weren't able to do it and i i cannot it's it's one of the most i was just i called him an mfr so many times just screaming at the tv because i couldn't be like you know oh he's cheating or whatever it was just you son of a bastard i cannot believe we're having to stare you down you're what stands between us a world series title uh and damn it for us please go away i just kept screaming go away at the tv and that loss is going to be one of the most devastating losses no matter how history looks

Starting point is 01:04:28 back on it what the jays were in position the outs left to win the world series it's insane but overall i think it was a really great season yes yes a really great run i love that team and that's not the loss is going to cloud my judgment of how great i think the 2025 blue jays did it just sucks that it had to end that way it is it does because i feel like they deserve to be immortalized in that in that championship it just didn't go their way now my my question to you is is really um they got a lot of free agents ernie clement's going to be a free agent he seems like a guy they could bring back affordably right uh but this management group has been notorious for being you know weirdly strange about things like you know big negotiations

Starting point is 01:05:13 like vlad guerrero jr right that deal almost didn't happen like vladdy could be a free agent like right now right bo bichette is oh you mean a dodger yeah bo bichette is um like and this is a guy who said i i want to stay here although there were rumors last year that he didn't yeah uh what's is he coming back can they get him back i think if i'm if i'm looking at the situation i'm begging rogers to put some of the money you just made this last month we saw all the rogers commercials run all the time you own the team you own the app that crashes the 2025 days throw it back into this team back up the truck for beau give him what he deserves this what he's doing on one knee hitting i think he finished what 340 or something hitting on one knee in this series

Starting point is 01:05:59 unbelievable he deserves to come back this whole squad deserves another shot at this for the way it ended for what they did here give him a shot bring them all back what can you do to improve on this team or do you even worry about it's a full season of shane bieber like that'll be awesome for you can he's got a he's got a player option so he's we're gonna opt out so you need to bring him back to there's another bring shuck there like ikf's a free agent ernie rios maybe he isn't back then if he's not burrios i don't know bassett like um we'll have him there hopefully you know so um i think the way you improve is just improving the bullpen like our biggest fear was in the end full season are you savage too yeah yeah trey's yeah trey's gonna be

Starting point is 01:06:39 in that starting rotation 100 but our biggest fears was that the bullpen would let us down and with two outs left in the world series the bullpen let us down and jeff hoffman giving up that home run that has got to be shut down lock number nine batter bro you gotta make sure that you don't get into a position again where the bullpen is letting you down i'll i'll let a million other things uh be the reason that they lose the game but you can't come into next year with a shaky bullpen so that's that's the number one thing okay you know because the offense is figured out clearly yeah greatest offense uh most runs ever by a major league team during a post season run is that the

Starting point is 01:07:19 regular 104 no teams ever had 104 runs in a postseason run they lost they lost yeah it kills you know what I love about razors shaving shaving yeah that those kinds of razors yeah not

Starting point is 01:09:37 can tell me what you want so lose Tanev he had to stay overnight in a Philadelphia hospital I think i looked at the mitch koff play and looked at that guys and said i don't think mitch koff's trying to injure him there i think that's a guy that came back too early it's irresponsible it was an irresponsible play but like that's the sort of collision that happens in hockey by accident so often and if that's gonna result in you going off on a stretcher they might have rushed you back yeah and we saw this exact same incident play out with jake muzzin he had a concussion in january of 2022 he missed seven games with that concussion and then came back 11 days later and he got a simple bump to the head and then was out how long was he out after

Starting point is 01:10:23 that he missed 20 games after that yeah so i if chris tanov isn't back till christmas i'm fine with that just stay stay off until you're fully healthy adam you you sat with chris nowinski with alan walsh this is the thing we fear about most in pro sports especially in the nfl but hockey it applies to it too. The repeated blows to the head and when you have a concussion and then you get the next one and then you get hit in the head again, these are the ones that really affect your just way of living life. Yes, CTE is not something you can see until somebody's passed away. It's just it's hidden in the brain. So for Chris Tanev here to go down that easily on a very simple hit, this wasn't something dirty by Mitch Koff. It means that that's a second concussion

Starting point is 01:11:06 very shortly after that first one and he needs to just go away until it is 100 and if that takes all season and into the playoffs and we miss them the entire time then that's what happens yeah this guy's got to live a life and that that scared me because this is not a guy who goes down in the heap and that's he's down in the heap twice in two weeks yeah that you can't it was i was terrified yeah if if you start start thinking about it like it's a foot right like start thinking about it like it's a broken foot um can you come back after a certain amount of time or can you even play on it yeah of course you can um okay what if you take a slap shot to the foot well all of a sudden it becomes a bigger deal and a bigger problem and you've exacerbated that problem and you've made

Starting point is 01:11:50 it worse um there's a lot of guys who get i mean we grew up watching this yeah there's a lot of guys who get a concussion and you can come back like in short order can come back and you might even get away with it if everything goes okay it rarely goes okay and and there's no time frame like some concussions are a few days some concussions are a few months uh and you have to just take it as it is so there's that they have to be and shout out uh jonah siegel who outlined the jake muzzin timeline because it's eerily similar yeah yeah um toronto's staff they need to be more responsible than that they just do uh now you also got to remember too that players lie players lie and the Leafs are not doing that well right now and Chris Tannev is a huge part of

Starting point is 01:12:37 what they're gonna need to be successful long term but uh this is just not something that you can handle now let's talk about the fact that Nick Robertson had a really good game and a great goal another one Easton Cowan scored his first goal nobody gave a shit uh but the bench went wild for him john tavarez gave a shit i've never seen him that happy in my entire life dude oh my the emotion from john it's you think like kombucha came down from the sky it was unbelievable it it's one of those things and i've said this over the years it's one of those things you can ride as a team for weeks for weeks the high of a kid scoring his first nhl goal we saw um it was a number of years ago the leafs had nothing really going on they were just playing

Starting point is 01:13:29 games and like they weren't gonna change their place in the standings they probably weren't gonna drop they probably weren't gonna go up they were just playing games and andreas johnson gets called up late and he scores his first nhl goal he goes apeshit everyone else goes apeshit everyone in the building because this one happened in toronto went apeshit everyone goes apeshit because that only happens once it only happens once unless you're bobby mcmahon and you have it disallowed then it happens twice it only happens once and like look at this this is as authentically happy as anyone's ever been i don't know who that man is no that's not john tavarez that mouth is way too open and that person is way too excited i had he scored a series winning goal in overtime

Starting point is 01:14:16 and didn't look that happy and yeah he went home he's like oh that was a good and look at easton gowan can i just say that celebration is downright cute yeah that's adorable the only one i can remember that was better was when dermot scored his first goal and his eyes lost his mind that was crazy and you know what's interesting here too is the coach loves this player yeah and usually rookies take a while to just warm up to a team especially it's been together for years they seem the players seem to love this guy i like love him yeah this game ironically because like i had one eye on it um uh went completely differently from how i thought it was gonna go because 70 seconds in the flyer score yeah and i was thinking like i'll i make

Starting point is 01:15:07 the lfr in my head a thousand times over the course of a game and they get scored on 70 seconds in and cowan was on the ice and there's another one where i'm like okay so this team can't defend and a big reason for why they can't defend is their forwards and you know everyone loves the rookie and no one likes criticizing a rookie but for some of these ugly plays he's on the ice a lot yep and he was on the ice again and i was just like you know blay looks good he does they're getting lotten back kneelander's gonna come back you don't need waivers just send him down get him get him some time and some confidence and like there are times where he looks good it's not like he's overwhelmingly great

Starting point is 01:16:01 you know what i mean i was about to say i think adam said the important thing that the coach is a fan yes yeah so that's what i was thinking and then the rest of the game happened and he was very effective it's not just the goal like he was a very effective player he was generating chances the pp yeah he almost scored earlier um and goodness gracious that power play needs some help um i'm not worried and then i'm not worried either but numbers of the power play just i got some news there by the way it's pretty they're pretty good they are in line with last year and last year they had a slow fall and then they picked yeah so yeah can i just can i just mention while you guys power play um terry koshan do the thing bart

Starting point is 01:16:43 easton cowan is now on pp1 matthew nice is on pp2 interesting uh-huh yeah very uh and and sorry continue gentlemen i didn't want to interrupt but i thought that was interesting hey that's well i was thinking to myself like maybe he's guy who comes out and then he you know the next 59 games of the of the game happens and and he looks good now when you look at the leafs roster today um and this is worth mentioning in line rushes this morning bobby mcmahon was left off nize matthews robertson cowan tavaris kneelander joshua wa macelli blade domi yarn croak mcmahon lotten and lorenz were the extras and and uh worth mentioning bobby mcmahon has uh zero goals and zero assists in his last eight games while

Starting point is 01:17:35 playing with matthews however following the practice craig berube said actually bobby is not out of the lineup oh we'll play he said we have some decisions to make the easy play i think is take yarn croak out for mcmahon okay um so that would that would be a very intriguing fourth line of blay domey mcmahon i like sammy blay by the way i've liked i really like sammy blay i fear he's the one coming out and i really hope not because i think he oh my god he looks exactly like the kind of player i've been asking all these guys to play like um yarn croaks battled injury it's not like he's been amazing since the very beginning of the season. I would have just left McMahon out of the lineup because he's been really cold.

Starting point is 01:18:30 You could argue that as well. After his hot start, he's been cold, but he's been running around. He's looking good, but you can clearly see Craig Roubaix isn't happy with him entirely because he's not putting up any points and not doing enough to generate offense because he played the least amount of any forward, I believe, on Saturday, like 11 minutes. You might just leave him. So, I don't know. I think that'd be the call,

Starting point is 01:18:52 but if, if, if McMahon's playing less than Sammy play, he's in a tough spot. Yeah. That sounds like a healthy scratch the next night. Do you think Jesse though, that they might be just saying,

Starting point is 01:19:02 listen, we know he's better than this. We know the results will come, let them work through it in the lineup. He is prone to stretches of not scoring though. Yes. Which is why he makes what he makes. So exactly.

Starting point is 01:19:12 Like I don't want him to be Alberta angle where he's incredibly fast player who can shoot but never scores he's tough like he gets in there yes like he's evolved he's evolved i praise that nick robertson play when nick robertson got smashed in the boards and bobby mcmahon fell over and defended him because that was the same game carl same game carlo couldn't do it for his dollars i think he deserves some kudos for that he always will for the next little bit um but he's he needs some offense he can't go through these dry spells that's why i'd take out yarn croak interesting mcmahon but if if i had to put him in like is is lawrence just a healthy scratch like i don't know if i love that either i don't love that either but that does happen

Starting point is 01:19:56 you have a glut of forwards right this is the thing and and like you're you're getting lotten back they have five full lines like that's a legitimate lawton mcmahon lawrence that's not a terrible line they they can't keep throwing this out there Robertson has more than earned his little shot that he's getting here and you don't know if uh you don't know how long Tanev's gonna be out like you could be fully justified in trying to go out there and get a uh defenseman with uh your forwards yeah oh how the turntables yeah I know imagine what you're saying two weeks ago i wasn't thinking that but yeah you know like well guys have picked up their socks robertson is better cowan is better macelli is better uh blay is i mean this guy i almost forgot they had him

Starting point is 01:20:50 you know lot and i expect to be a big part of this team i like mcmahon and lorenz i want to ask they have too many guys i want to ask you about nick robertson because uh he joined the matthew's line i think it was three games ago versus calgary right uh was it calgary it was last week i don't remember i can't tell if it was calgary buffalo i think it was calgary recently and even though the game versus columbus was an ass kicking he had a goal and an assist and then philadelphia a goal and an assist and he was plus one by the way versus columbus if you can believe that that's funny the fact that anybody was plus one versus columbus is nuts yeah um columbus was the goaltending was so bad there's a you flush it but there's a guy that has put up four points

Starting point is 01:21:30 in three games we'll say maybe it's four games doesn't even matter next to matthews do you now look at this and go okay let's give this another week and see where it goes because i think it's good for the leafs to have another shooting option on the matthews line because it means that they got to cover the other guy too and like if you don't respect his shot he will burn you like i mean he his shot against philly was unbelievable just hands it off to like listen yeah he's a defensive liability all right um so's domey and they had no problem putting him there michelle's fine in that regard i i like his game i like michelle too what what i'm saying though is in terms of the options you currently have we we did suggest this like near the beginning

Starting point is 01:22:23 of the season i'm like why not put robertson somewhere in the top six he's not made for a bottom six role he doesn't do it well he tries and i admire that he's trying and he hustles out there and goodness gracious he gets hemmed in so much but when you're out there with austin and nize you're not going to get hemmed in much no you might um but i mean they're that's the number one pk unit for the leaves too right so i think they'll be okay they the and his playmaking has taken a step his nhl has his skating has he's young like there's reason to believe he's going to continue to get even better um yeah i'd 100 leave him there so uh neil andrew is obviously coming back which uh which is which is excellent news uh eric carlson was uh recorded this morning

Starting point is 01:24:49 talk about too is that David Kampf left the Marlies this weekend to consider his future now it's interesting because this morning on 32 thoughts Elliot Friedman uh made an interesting observation and I thought you guys might want to know about this so he said I don't know exactly what was said or how it was communicated but Kampf did leave players with the Marlies with the impression he was going to terminate his contract now that would stun me friedman said uh later on that he believes that in floating that out there you get an up you'll get an uh you get the ability to know what other teams might pick you up so if there was a mutual termination by with david conf in the leafs um then he he would at least know from other teams sending up like you know

Starting point is 01:25:33 because everybody sort of backdoors a little bit uh and go okay well here's what we would pay you Here's what we would want to get for you, right? Because the Leafs obviously have tried to trade him. Nobody wants the contract. So if he's going to give up basically $5 million, he's got to know that he's going to get that $5 million back over the next two to three seasons. And I think it's kind of interesting too

Starting point is 01:25:55 that the Leafs don't look at him like he's a bad player. It's just he's a player whose salary doesn't fit. Well, and if his agent were to go out there and canvas, which they for sure have. would the yeah but would the leafs even block no the least would have probably given them a low-key like just go see if you can just go do it yeah i mean if they're looking for a trade you can be pretty sure that the agent is out is the one out there canvas that's insane because he's given up this year's and next year's deal if five million bucks his contract yeah 2.4 million he's making

Starting point is 01:26:27 uh each season so whatever pro rated to be that he makes on this year plus the 2.4 next year right even that's that's a huge bet on yourself wow even if you were to sign a three-year deal at one and a half you're talking about a that's a five hundred thousand dollar lower aav than you would over the next two years and i look at right in total dollars i look at this and i go okay but you're david khanf let's say you mutually terminate the deal yeah you sign a one-year contract for a million and a half somewhere because i think that's no you're burning 2.4 million but with the cap going up and centers being needed because here's the thing if he's in them if he's in the ahl you know how the nhl is out of sight out of mind nobody nobody actually

Starting point is 01:27:09 does their job this is the problem and also in an olympic year yeah exactly what if he doesn't even make the check team so go find an opportunity for yourself and then july 1st 2026 go make your money because a two and a half million dollar fourth line center is not crazy anymore that's Yeah, but he's already making that. I know, but it's the opportunity cost, right? You know what else? I'm shocked that nobody in the league wants him. I think they just don't want to pay assets for him.

Starting point is 01:27:37 Yes. They can have him for free, future consideration. They probably could have had him on waivers. He was on waivers. Yeah, they didn't need to pay assets. I'm shocked there's 31 other NHL teams and nobody values David Kahn. He also gets to choose.

Starting point is 01:27:50 If he terminates his contract, he gets to go to the team of his choosing. That's crazy. I don't think this is Philip Zedina. no where philip zadina did leave money on the table a lot i was a lot and i think it was hundreds of thousands this is conf lighting five million bucks on fire and i well not quite but no it's their signing bonus as well yeah he's already made some of his money this year it's really what i'm looking at is the 2.4 next year that he's guaranteed to make if he terminates his contract

Starting point is 01:28:23 that money is gone yeah plus whatever pro-rated contract would be for the rest of this season now let's say in ballpark 3.5 million dollars he's lighting on fire can i can i be a naive you know disney character for a sec sure what if he's just unhappy what if 3.5 million dollars is worth the light on fire for your nhl career well he's he's also by the way do a bonus july first of 1.325 million so there's that like part of this contract is bonus money yeah and that's probably what stopped and he's made money prior to this so like he's not hurting like he's it listen this is not a risk a lot of people would take but it's a risk he feels good taking i i remember pre-season being like he looks fine i thought he'd be the fourth line i did too man

Starting point is 01:29:13 He looks fine, and they kind of, with Lawton out, they straight up needed him. I was like, oh, Lawton's down. They're going to need comp. He's not going to go down, and then they've just blown him away. He makes more sense to have on this team than some guys on it. He's been cowing, according to you. Well, no, according to me, 70 seconds into a game,

Starting point is 01:29:30 I was cranky about it. You got really upset at Cowan. I did, internally, and I chose to share it anyway. He makes too much for what he does. but yeah with with the cap going up i don't think it's too much you know what's crazy is like the leafs can't move them right and then he's going to terminate his deal he's going to sign with like the blackhawks yeah they're going to be able to contact you yeah and then someone's going to oh my god i'd be so upset but yeah and then he's going to have to fight with pontus

Starting point is 01:30:04 for ice time again uh he's he's gonna go somewhere like the blackhawks and someone's going to trade from at the deadline again yeah you know i this might end up being a super worthwhile risk but i do oh it's hard not to clench at that if i'm him if i'm his agent you can't take a one-year deal wherever you go you can't take a one-year deal no well you have to see what's out there you have to see what's out there hopefully it's something like two years 175 per i think you want to take a one-year deal in this instance steve i really do wow i think you do okay i think you take that risk because you want to you want to cash in this summer you don't want to be held at 175 what if that what if that doesn't come yeah someone falls ass first into

Starting point is 01:30:52 your knee like what happened to doug gilmore and then you're just so you got to be you got to be okay like that's the thing you can't think that 2.4 million dollars you're guaranteed to make million career earnings it can't be there for you yeah so if you guys were in a similar situation like steve i said you can't do lfr unless you light a hundred thousand dollars on fire oh my like are you doing that's what he's doing because he cares about his job like you're not allowed to be on the steve dangle podcast unless you light a year's salary on fire yeah and but if you do this for me i might give you 200 but yeah yeah not even it's i might give you 125 yeah if you if you come back and you do it and you light it on fire you have the ability to maybe make oh

Starting point is 01:31:40 a million dollars you know and it's like this is an insane situation for a person look at um wade redden because this doesn't happen to a ton of guys but wade redden i want to say made five million dollars when or six i think it might have even been six well yeah it was six a year highest paid defenseman in the league might have made seven and a half yeah and the rangers sent him down to the hartford wolf pack yep and that is where he remained now for the rest of his life he got to make that uh escrow free so he got a raise yep like and that also started the rule by the way where if you sent a player down part of their salary stayed on your books because when the rangers sent him down none of his salary and stayed on the books

Starting point is 01:32:34 so camp if he were to terminate his deal he's actually lighting more money on fire because he's making more with the toronto marlies than he would with the leafs but i don't know if red never played an nhl game ever again let me find out after that and redden was obviously much later in his career st louis blues and boston bruins he played about 29 games 23 one year six another right but it wasn't until that contract was done that's right because he was with the wolf pack and then the connecticut whale which is the same franchise the connecticut whale yeah forgot about them yeah like but it was it you know it's the luongo thing my contract sucks you know you want to play that's a it's that is a really really difficult decision quite the decision now i i

Starting point is 01:33:27 know we're running a little long here so i want to get to these last few pieces very very quickly okay uh matthew schaefer had two goals in a 3-2 victory against the columbus blue jackets this weekend schaefer turned 18 september 5th is the youngest nhl defenseman ever to record a multi goal game the guy that used to hold the record is some asshole you've never heard of named bobby or uh he was 18 years 248 days and i don't know what shafers is but it's crazy he's got five goals and five assists in 12 games with new york you gotta he basically didn't play last year yeah and it was junior yeah his last full season was as a 16 year old basically 16 into 17 in the ontario hockey league and he is immediately one of the most dominant defensemen in the nhl

Starting point is 01:34:15 that's crazy uh the new jersey devils extended 35 year old goalie who seemingly might be on a down year who's prone to occasional down years uh jake markstrom to an extension what did that happen over the weekend now you you can't be faulted for missing it uh two years 12 million so he'll make six million bucks a year so the i completely missed that the combined tandem of the two of them is uh 8.8 million dollars jake allen and jake markstrom and i just want to mention that Yeah, you got to remember, Jesse, Jake Allen signed for an internship with the Devils at one point in a half a decade. Jake Markstrom is 3-2 this year with an 875 percentage,
