is it ever not the worst when cory perry scores on your team
oh like it doesn't matter how old cory perry gets when cory perry scores on you
it sucks just that much more his face it's his face you want to just want to he's just one of
those guys is like you cannot unless he is on your team you cannot like him no one likes cory perry
unless you are a ducks fan uh or currently a stars fan no one he looks like a tall like fourth
grader yeah he does does that make sense baby face he does right and uh man there we're not
talking about it as much this year because i guess we're not deep diving as much we're just sort of
trying to get through life.
Corey Perry needs to shave
so bad.
Andre Palat,
who has been amazing,
looks horrible.
Like, dude, at what
point
is the superstition getting in the way of
you looking like a human being?
Like, dude, it's awful.
It's awful. There are a couple hurting
playoff beards in these playoffs.
It's great. So, Corey Perry's
35 joe pavelski is 36 is that the oldest combined goal scoring pair in stanley cup final history
it can't be because players used to play until their 40s like they're yeah but i mean recently
i think it is for sure i mean there hasn't there's been such a push towards younger players
like even that pavelski deal which was signed there that raised a lot of eyebrows this off
season and i wonder i mean it could still raise some eyebrows right like it this could be
they could win the cup and they could and it could still be you know uh an albatross in a year or two
i don't think anyone thought it would suck right away no it's just you know at that age you you
take your chances right you don't know i i looked at the three years and i was like it's a little
bit marlo-esque but yeah i mean marlo was really good in the first year too didn't score 13 playoff
goals which we're comparing apples and oranges a bit perry scored goals four and five last night
Joe Pavelski, I think, is the highest goal-scoring American
in Stanley Cup playoff history.
But bubbling under the surface, the last Dallas Stars forward
to score a goal in this series, not named Corey Perry or Joe Pavelski,
was Jason Dickinson in the first period of Game 3.
Oh, wow.
Really?
They had a goal from Klingberg and a goal from Haskin,
and they need contributions.
I was saying in my video today, like Tampa's done, you know,
pretty good job of keeping the stars at bay so what the stars do is what every team does when
they can't get anything going they fire it on from the point and they bang and crash in front
and tampa's got to do a better job but easier said than done when it's friggin cory perry and
joe pavelski well it didn't what did it take it was 19 or 17 minutes until they had a shot in
overtime it's absolutely like that's ridiculous james myrtle tweeted out that their expected
goals was 15 and they won and that's that's hockey right i mean if you have a shot it is a miracle
it is a miracle that the stars survived that game yes i think gourd had a had a post perry
almost scored the game-winning goal on his own net um reminded me of uh god that actually happened
game seven overtime on home ice the mississauga st michael's majors in their final season scored
on their own net no championship no jesse blacker's own sound attack one the goal i forget
who the goal was right jesse blacker yes uh jared maidens i think was the guy who was credited with
the goal he didn't score it he was kicked in i believe it was kicked into the net by um i can't
remember the name of the player but it was one of the majors own guys can you imagine can you
we we rip on chris phillips for scoring on his own net in a game that the sens lost like what
five one or something like that can you imagine but who's the uh who's the dallas player that uh
at the line it was an empty net he went down and then he fell at the line uh oh patrick stefan
patrick stefan yeah and then edmonton came back and scored and then it takes it all the way down
i did a deep dive i did a deep dive video on that during the spring when we were just
scrambling for any kind of content and that actually changed it changed the face of the nhl
because the Oilers, obviously, you know,
Patrick Steffen screws it up for the Stars.
Oilers go the other way.
I think it was Alex Hemsky scored to send the game to overtime.
What people don't talk about is Dallas did win that game.
They ended up winning it, but the Oilers got a point.
Right.
That point altered the standings just enough
that when the draft lottery came,
it actually screwed the Oilers out of the first overall pick that year.
And that year, 2007, the first overall pick, Patrick Cain.
Was it lottery balls or was it just whoever finishes last, though?
No, it was the Blackhawks won the lottery that year.
I think they went from third to first or something like that.
They jumped.
They did jump.
So the Oilers' odds would have been a little better.
No, they would have got it.
if they were sitting in that spot all they had to do was simply lose that game like they were
supposed to yeah in an alternate universe that blackhawks ball is an oilers ball yes okay okay
that's crazy that's cool yeah wild yeah wow wow how did we get here i don't know i don't know
well it's just you know it comes down to the fact that you know dallas when they want to are are
pretty unbelievable as a as a team and as a system and it's funny you know steve you always rag on
nhl players who are like yeah i don't watch hockey once uh once i'm out or once i'm eliminated
when you watch a series like this you go like again tampa you match them up against any team
in the league and they're pretty much going to be the most talented team they're so crisp
so crisp but but the fact that you know that's what hockey is getting through games like this
against teams like this they're that much better and not i'm not taking away anything away from
the stars but but true systems hockey is being able to manage another team's strengths and blunt
them basically and and i think that's what dallas did last night you know obviously still the the
scales are not tipped in their favor uh the numbers would not suggest that you know if you
were to look based on the numbers uh it wouldn't suggest that they've got a hope tampa's caving
them in just like they caved everybody in right right by the numbers dallas has still won two
games now i still think tampa's winning game six i do but it's hockey and anything can happen
so i've definitely i mean i i definitely think that tampa is going to win yeah if you predict
if you're trying to predict what's going to happen you're going to say okay the odds are
that dallas can't do this four times out of seven you know that's essentially it so okay
they can play this system they can get out shot they can just bang away and get a couple goals
and maybe win two maybe three games but doing it four times out of seven versus tampa you're like
okay odds aren't really in their favor there it's it's a weird feeling it's a weird feeling almost
like the raptors with golden state where you know i was like i'm i'm comfortable ah whatever they
lost game five then game six happens and i'm like oh shit if they lose game six i don't feel very
comfortable about game seven if you're tampa you gotta wrap this up because once you get to game
seven that is the coin flip and anything absolutely doesn't matter anymore then you've put it in the
hands of chaos and bounces and you know what i was saying so i still think i still think tampa
is probably going to win but i would be on this show today talking about how the dallas stars are
about to win the stanley cup if that icing attempt that was not called icing went in everyone was
talking about it touched vasilevsky it shouldn't have been icing i'm like bro that almost went in
did it hit the post because it hit a skate yeah it like went off and then kind of rolled to the
That was a skip on a divot away from being the game-winning goal.
I don't even know who cleared it.
I don't even know who it was.
And easier goals have gone in.
Oh, yeah.
Way easier in high-pressure situations.
Somebody posted, and I forgot this even happened,
but I did watch the game back in the day.
The last year that the Leafs had before the first lockout in 2004,
in the playoffs, they played Ottawa in the first round,
and Joe Neuendijk scoring two along-the-ice wrist shot goals
against Patrick Lilleen,
like the two softest goals you've ever seen in your life.
And I'm sorry, Sens fans, I don't mean to bring this up,
but it was just a reminder that literally anything
with this stupid black disc that we decided
that that's the thing we're going to play with.
You know what I mean?
That's shaped weird, made of rubber, but it's hard.
It'll break your teeth, but it can bounce.
who invented this thing yeah really like how do we and a reminder that this is the best we could
come up with because the previous iteration was a piece of cow shit road apples they used to call
road apples that's right wait that reminds me of a bit we used to do didn't that isn't that how we
like isn't that like back in my day didn't we have a bit about road apples adam did we i don't
know i thought we did i forgot i did have a science teacher in grade eight who used to love
to tell us about how he and his friends would go out and play hockey and they'd use their skates
on the street because they didn't have they weren't like clearing the streets of salt so
they would have their they'd be wearing their gigantic big blades that they used to wear
in like the 40s this guy was an old man and uh and they would strap old couch cushions to their
knees and that would be their goalie pads and uh and they would play hockey on the street on skates
because there was just a layer of ice there and they call them road apples that's what we used to
play with the you know because the police would walk by with their horses and people would shoot
shit at each other literally frozen shit i used to always play street hockey with my dad's old
baseball glove oh yeah really literally it's got his name written on it in his child writing
and it's like old and worn it's like it's like this pale nothing is this color but it's like
20 30 years old and i i still remember getting my first like road hockey set and just being like i
will be unbeatable i will be unbeatable i have actual hockey equipment now is there anything
that's more satisfying than playing goalie and road hockey and just robbing a guy like when
When your tennis ball goes into your glove and you're,
I have saves I made in street hockey as an eight-year-old.
I still remember.
Really?
Oh, absolutely.
And that's the perfect time because after that,
then people start to shoot hard.
And then it's not fun anymore.
You're just a slapstick, you dick.
In elementary school, we used to have a portable.
So there's a portable and then there was a fence.
So one team's net was the portable.
and then the other side it was the fence and then you go right we played mini sticks and then the
goalie is you always you take your jacket you turn it inside out you put it through your arms i feel
like every kid did this at every school right absolutely yeah and then that's your chest
protector and that's how you make the saves and then that kid's in that just freeze just get
pneumonia every middle winter we so we had we had something different we we had so there was a door
that was the net it was a doorway that was the net oh cool and then the other net was the friggin
um you know how they there was like gas valves or something on the outside of the building and
they would put like metal piping around it to be like kids don't play near this yeah we use that
as the net and there was like a bar in the middle and that counted as it was like it was like two
crossbars so no no it hit it in it yeah but that should count dickhead we gotta switch intermission
the net's way bigger on the other side what do you mean intermission it's recess stupid
oh god i miss being a kid it's fun it's literally whatever you have that's kind of rectangular shape
yeah that's your net when you're a kid that's just i remember playing soccer and uh and like
you i don't know why we we did this but like you'd make you'd make the two uh it would just
be piles of coats right or your lunch bags you just pile your lunch bags and that would be
the post yeah oh yeah absolutely and and and and then the debate was if you say you tipped it off
your fingers did it go over the post marker or did it you know what i mean it goes to the side
it goes over the jackets did it hit the post and there'd be this debate for five minutes and then
you've discussed and then you decide whether it was a goal everybody would hate each other go
their separate ways it's good problem solving and then have like video review now like i wonder
You go over there and you record the whole thing on your phone.
No, that's a goal.
That's definitely a goal.
Let's get to the Kellogg's Frosted Flakes Selly of the Week.
Steve Dangle, if you don't pick Corey Perry last night, I would be shocked.
I would be shocked.
Steve's great.
And that's why I will not shock you, Adam.
Corey Perry turning back the clock.
And I really got to say, forget the fact that it was an overtime winner.
forget the fact that it was his second goal of the game that was i think cory perry's best game in
like half a decade seriously he really turned the clock back and that's not an insult to the player
he's been he's obviously battled injuries gotten older etc etc he had nine shots on goal in this
game the next closest star was miro hayes getting in with four the next highest uh dallas stars
forward was I think it was Andrew Cogliano and Dennis Gurianov with three a piece so take those
two combine them Corey Perry had three more than those two combined uh he was plus two two goals
three hits uh 23 minutes he was doing everything and then the the celly to boot it was one of those
ones where any team can win a game and you look and you go ah we'll get the next one the energy
the Dallas Stars and Corey Perry in particular
carried into that serial
Sully made you
think they believe
at very least they can do this.
Yeah. Nothing says game time
like Frosted Flakes. He said
after the game too that they're building
something special.
Building something special. Yeah.
So they believe it.
They believe it. Be interesting
to see. I have
to say I got it. I think it's Tampa's
time, but it's been a pretty good series.
absolutely i mean the stars have generally speaking it's either going to be even or one
team is going to bring it and the other team is going to take it right every team that tampa's
played so far has taken it yeah and they've had to figure out how to deal with it and despite
being down three games to one uh dallas has done the best job so far that's how good uh
tampa's been but you know they've showed that they can trade chances with tampa too which is
the weirdest thing the stars are period by period a different team yeah it's they're bizarre and
it's when they go into the shell mode it's by choice and not necessarily necessity um and their
shell mode is it's different from others like uh third period of game one tampa outshoots dallas
22 to 2 none of the 22 felt like it had a chance of going in no no you're right yeah it's just
the weirdest thing about this series to me though has been like anton hudobin is getting
sloppier and sloppier as this goes along he's getting more fueled by adrenaline uh it seems
I don't know if he's totally right stopping the puck he is yeah it's it it's been a um boy
I saw I think it was a John Shannon tweet I think he said um Anton Hudobin is basically fueled by
hope or his playing style is just hope and I'm like and and I want to get on my soapbox as an
old man and be like kids every goalie used to play that way that was the 90s their strategy was hope
yeah that was the whole thing like what did goalie coaches do back in the day all right i'm gonna
shoot a bunch of pucks of you and you're gonna try to stop them and that was practice yeah what
else did they work on it was butterfly cookie cutter shit that is your kellogg's frosted
flake selly of the week i thought it was a good time to jump in with that i thought it was over
great selly my bad hey i didn't know uh i didn't i didn't realize that rear admiral from uh spin
chickless is uh is the kind of guy that's going to be breaking news but he's claiming on twitter
right now that tory krug's rights will be traded in the next 24 hours uh among the suitors we have
vegas and i expect vegas to be in on most everybody yeah they're they're one of those
teams like everybody talks about the leafs oh it's always the least vegas is on everything
they have no cap room so you've got colorado florida vegas and detroit all among the suitors
for tory krug's rights um i gotta tell you one of the uh one of the most fun defensemen to watch
and i hated him watching him against the leafs but i'm a huge tory krug guy all of his own entries
and he's a he's one of those guys that he's young enough that you go you sign him to a long-term
deal and you don't really worry about it in the same way that you would worry about someone who
is 30 like the guy's 26 27 years old I don't think you you worry too much about a six or seven year
deal with Torrey Krug and you're sort of set up at that point for a long long time assuming you
know no injuries take over this is a smaller framed but fast great puck mover kind of defenseman
and I think Boston's going to really miss him.
It'll be interesting to see, though, Detroit making the moves they've made,
Florida making the moves they've made.
I'm curious to see that those two teams are in on this.
Do you know what I mean?
Yeah, I mean, Colorado should be in on everyone.
Yeah, Colorado makes sense.
The team that confused me the most at first viewing was Detroit.
I go, what the hell?
How are they involved?
They don't belong in the conversation of acquiring anyone good.
the mission there is not to be good right now yeah however i have an idea i have an idea so
tory krug has already talked about wanting uh a longer term deal he's already done the short-term
deal thing he feels like he's earned this what happened yesterday the mark stall trade and we'll
talk about that more later yep the precedent seems to have been set that detroit is ready to take on
a big pile of crap so right now they have eight forward signed a bunch of rfas so i really don't
think they have to worry too much uh they have four defensemen signed still more than half good
and they have two goalies granted it's jonathan bernier and calvin pickard but if the
if the mission is to lose games good tandem good and bernie was great last year it was very very
good for a team like detroit i think he's earned the opportunity detroit has their first in each
of the next two seasons their second rounder in each of the next two seasons the oiler second
rounder in each of the next two seasons the cap second rounder and the rangers second rounder
over the next two years their own third rounder in each of the next two seasons and san jose's
and vegas's uh third so that's they're still very much in rebuild mode here's what everyone needs to
be locked in on 27.3 million dollars in projected cap space for next season they have some key rfas
uh tyler bertuzzi he'll probably get a raise anthony mantha he'll probably get a raise
i'm looking at the wrist or at the list sorry
like trevor daly jonathan erickson madison bally uh cody gollebuff uh brendan perlini like
how many of these guys are going to get big big deals they're not so here's my plan if the money
is not there for a long-term deal you're detroit you go here you go boston we're going to acquire
tory krug you give him big money for like three years let's say big money i'm talking what what
should tory krug make eight yeah probably you give him 10 you give him 11 that's a lot of money
you know it is a lot of your high is 59 points which is great a lot for a defenseman it's great
yeah you give him that you retain salary and you trade him for more than you got him for
because the mission is not to can to contend for the next few years
they've already set the precedent that's two galaxy brain for an nhl general manager
I guarantee you it's not why is Detroit in the conversation then well yeah because they probably
need a guy who can anchor their blue line for a long long time and Tory Krug might be the guy to
do that hey Tory sign this contract with us no uh no I've been on the Boston Bruins my whole
career and you want me to sign with your shitty team why because you'll be good that that was
iggy no he doesn't like my idea krug's also 29 by the way he's 29 yeah he's gonna turn 30 in april
why he's like one of those guys that i see is perpetually young but you know there's the baby
face it's the cory perry face except he's not tall right so you believe it it also helps that
These guys are all younger than me now.
So they all look – which is weird.
Yeah, I think Torrey Krug is the kind of guy that, you know,
based on what we know about Steve Eisenman and the way he puts the team together,
I would think that that would be the archetype defenseman you would want on your team
if you're Steve Eisenman.
The problem is, when is Detroit going to be good again?
That's why I said two or three years.
I don't think the plan is for them to suck, right?
like the stall trade is probably a precursor stall is probably the stall trade is he's not
he's not he's not peaking or anything but it's a body you know maybe you're getting
maybe you're getting a guy just he can replace trevor daly yeah you go you go young like so
all those names i mentioned like they have young guys you know ready to ready to join the lineup
uh you know philip zadina you never know michael rasmussen there's there's a ton of guys
listen on cap friendly they're non-roster forwards non-roster defense all names i recognize
because detroit went through a lot of names this year oh philip heronic is on their non-roster
what the hell oh because he's loaned out listen they're not going to be good but surround the
young guys with vets get through the next two seasons and you know we saw it in 16 17 with
the leaf sometimes it doesn't take that long well sorry jess but mark stall will be a good
addition to that roster i mean it for that reason alone like beloved in new york great leader 800
nhl games that's the kind of guy that you're sort of hoping for and he's winding down his career
you're not expecting him to be great but you want him to set a good example right that's i mean
that's it in a nutshell isn't it and then his 5.7 comes off the books like i'm looking at detroit's
uh cap friendly and it's only actually 4.2 in actual dollars or something wasn't it oh well
There you go. That's lovely.
And they only have two players signed for the 2022-2023 season.
Wow.
Somehow Justin Applegator is one of them.
Next offseason, how many players are on the Detroit roster?
Next offseason?
Yeah.
So one, two, three, four.
Four.
Four that are not on entry levels.
Right.
So you've got a team of four guys, and you're Steve Bui,
and you're looking at it, and you're saying,
okay they handed me a blank piece of paper if i think i can build a contender in one year because
i only have four guys and the rest are just guys that get to choose why not try and go for it maybe
krug's the start of that maybe this off season you start making the moves because uh it's gonna
be pandemic life maybe you take advantage because detroit's a hockey team that's gonna make money
who's gonna be in the top half of the league in terms of revenue so maybe they don't struggle as
much maybe he says i'm gonna go after a roster that's not gonna compete this year but the year
after when i get all the guys i want in there that can actually compete me do you get krug
petrangelo and uh why not oh my god tell me if you have all the money in the world you wouldn't
just go for it i wouldn't why not because the dean is supposed to be a big score i think you
need the only thing you need at that point is i think you need a number one center yeah which
you'll have to go and buy yeah i don't think dylan larkin is quite that no but he's a good
second guy i mean he's a great player there's no question but like you need a dominant first
line center at that point there yeah it's like you said you put a couple pieces in there and
all of a sudden the rest of your team looks way better yeah there's something there like maybe
it's not krug i was just sort of you know like you said galaxy branding trying to come up with ideas
but the the mark stall trade happened and then they still have 27.3 million dollars to screw
around and pick up some assets and they already have six picks in the first three rounds for the
next two seasons uh including man you know we talk about teams that got screwed uh at the trade
deadline because the season was paused basically like three games later or something like that
the edmonton oilers gave up two seconds in sam gagne for like
seven games of andreas athanasiu yeah and the red wings just re-signed sam gagne who
like doesn't totally suck like nope he's in there and two seconds
and i don't know apparently the oilers might not be able to even qualify athanasiu yes yeah
they're saying i was i read an article this week in the journal in the edmonton journal that was
saying i think it was forget who wrote it but it was about basically the athanasiu issue that
they're going to have because he's obviously could be a valuable player for their team but
his qualifying offer is too high and probably you know based on the value in the market right now
he's he may not be worth what the qualifying offer is you know what i mean like cody cc's
qualifying offer was like four million bucks or whatever they paid him um you know the he's not
worth that right he wouldn't be worth that now he's going to ufa but at two and a half million
Is Andreas Athanasiou going to be too expensive for the Oilers
because of the cap issues they have, right?
It's unbelievable.
It's crazy.
It's unbelievable, man.
It's crazy.
I mean, you talk about teams that should be active.
Like, different guys in charge, different situation.
Connor McDavid and Leon Dreisaitl are only getting better and better.
The Oilers need to make a splash, man.
They got to make a big move to get out of this muck.
Yeah, but I think that requires dropping the Chris Russell deal.
And at that point, I'd be calling Detroit.
Why not?
You already have the relationship there built up.
Call them and say, what's it going to take?
If Mark Stahl is this, what's Chris Russell?
There you go.
And that gives you some meat, right?
Something to deal with and some sort of space to deal with.
So when it comes to the NHL, obviously there's a lot going on.
Let me ask you this.
You've got holes in your roster.
your ex-NHL team or NHL team ex um do you trade away the guy that once got you 40 goals
to fill some of those roster spots it's almost like I look at it like trading down in the draft
the Winnipeg Jets apparently have Patrick Laine on the market um according to Elliot Friedman
let me just read this quick and then and then I want to get your reaction to this guys he said
this is on headlines last night I don't think Patrick Laine has asked for a trade or anything
but I think they kind of see where this is potentially going in the future.
I just think everybody's looking at the situation and saying,
what if our way to solve the problem is we can use Patrick line to find a
number two center or right-hand shot defenseman line is 21 years old.
He is in 305 NHL games scored 138 goals.
He's played 305 NHL games already.
He's got a year left at 6.25 million. And yes,
he did have a bit of a bad year, but even a bad year for him is over 30 goals.
right right you know he like you know when when like let's you know when he did have that bad
year the second year or whatever it was like it's still over 30 goals this guy is just getting
started is this a deal if they make this are they going to regret this uh probably you know it's
it's funny so when we were in our little phase a few years ago where we were just obsessed with
everything mark bergevin did yeah man god the habs had a weird couple years right like the suban
saga uh galchenyuk and domi and and all that that was that was fascinating to me but we talked about
i i think i went on this rant once where i was like can you just trade galch
already you're obviously sick of them you're you're sick of them get rid of them you're sick
of them patrick linea is such a much higher stakes version of that the rumors have been around for so
long and they've been rooted in reality there's a part of the jets organization that is clearly
already sick of this kid and i'll throw another name in there because they're constantly involved
in trade rumors i think the calgary flames are kind of sick of johnny gaudreau oh i get i get
that sense too we all but i don't know i don't i don't understand is that a personality thing is it
a way of playing is it what would it be sick i i think it i think it's a personality thing it
wouldn't be his honest performance that's good i mean there's the playoff issue with the drone
whatever uh and but line a we we look at his warts you know maybe defensively and you know
maybe uh you know his goal scoring ruts and you know he wants to play with mark shifley and the
organization doesn't see it that way again 305 games he's 21 and how many goals on him 138
get out of here the least amount of goals he's ever scored is this season and it's because it
was the least amount of games he in 68 games this year he had 28 goals and lat and and he also had
63 points the year previous 30 goals 20 assists 50 points in a full 82 and i don't think he'd
missed a game this year so he was going to go he was going to he was going to hit 30 35 goals
this year easy right and like phil castle's best season in toronto was like 36 so his you know what
i mean and that gets 21 yeah what are you doing close the trade go for it let's go lining for
good draw uh country down or dumba and minnesota's one of the two first round picks because they have
two first round picks next year pittsburgh's on their own so you take one of those in matt dumba
for patrick lena see garen wants a center though garen wants a center can you imagine if that was
his sticking point buddy go out and get a different one yeah patrick lena go out and get a different
one yeah are you nuts i don't think that hold up the deal to be fair jesse i think matt dumba would
be exactly what the jets need but again who's gonna okay i know they've got shifley i know
they've got uh no they got other weapons but does that not put more pressure on those weapons
wheeler shifley those guys no no you got my lining double pick up the slack remember remember um
doesn't score 38 goals or whatever remember the oilers were heavily criticized for not getting
like a like a finish not companion what um like role model for jesse pull your rv
the jets got to do that for linea like they got to do it like the when you have a player as special
as patrick linea it shouldn't be how much can we get for this guy in a trade it should be how do we
best use this asset how do we best develop this player develop the skill set you have a guy who
can score 40 or 50 goals he's a constant every single season he chooses to play for your hockey
team he's a threat to score 40 or 50 goals and you're gonna trade him like and he's worked on
his playmaking ability we've already seen development in patrick lining's game what's
the problem here well they answer he's he's got value he's yeah he's okay so does mcdavid trade
them yeah no but they have trouble signing free agents in winnipeg let's just be frank about that
that's an issue so you draft and sometimes you are lucky enough to get the second overall pick
and you overpay a little bit too probably probably not with this guy 6.25 for a guy who's going to
score 35 40 goal you go out and try to get that as a ufa this year one go out and try to get you
know one thing they're probably concerned about too is that next contract because if he does go
out and score the 50 goals like that's cost you 10 million dollars and winnipeg might not want to
pay that and might look at it and say okay if we get two guys who can spread that money to instead
of giving one guy 10 million dollars maybe that's a better use of our money and our assets maybe but
then i think you gotta you gotta reevaluate your place in the world if you're worried about your
players doing too good you know what i mean is that a way to run a sports franchise it's a good
problem to have yeah but it's also circumstance in terms of the team you're running you can't
you can't avoid your market you can't avoid your budgets you know it's a reality well the winnipeg
jets probably don't have an internal budget they they're extremely wealthy ownership which is great
uh but the but all the same the the the reality is the um you know do you want to allocate the
amount of money and it seems there's a remember when tyler sagan was traded and it was like well
well you know there's certain ways that you play the game there's ways that you play the game
but does he fit our culture does he fit our culture does he play the game the right way
yeah he's in the stanley cup final for the third time by the way right and has already won obviously
and has and and by all accounts is a mature grown man who plays center and uh defensively is
responsible and scores a lot of points he's done some boneheaded things but a lot of them were when
he was much younger and you know every conversation i've ever had with anybody about tyler second
behind the scenes he's exemplary yeah so you know okay maybe patrick liney is personally a little
annoying to you i don't know i think he's funny as hell um dude that's the impression i'm getting
yeah but funny as hell gets you traded to carolina dougie hamilton so stupid which is really stupid
but i think you know he's also 21 years old and okay yeah okay put the contract aside because
really if you've got a player that you're paying 6.25 million to already to raise him to say jesse
10 million bucks is really only a three million dollar or three and a half million dollar
difference it's not that big of a change the reality though for me is that if you just don't
like the guy is that a way to run a sports franchise if you know just because he makes
comments about like fortnight and stuff like that and makes people laugh and he's a cog he's always
been a self-assured guy from the second remember when there was that line a versus matthews debate
And they're like, this line-A kid, boy, he's a confident guy,
knows he can score a bunch of goals, and he's coming to the NHL,
and that is all he's done.
And so you liked his confidence, you liked his swagger,
you liked the personality that was there,
and you liked the fact that he was ready to go.
And then all of a sudden, now here we are three, four years later,
and it's like, well, I don't like the fact that he's confident.
What, would you rather him not be confident?
There's got to be something, you know, like I said,
there's things we don't always see,
and I promise, like, I don't have inside information here.
where there's smoke there's fire sort of thing if you hear one rumor once it's one thing you know
in Toronto we hear a rumor about every single player we've been hearing about them trading
Patrick Laine since basically his the beginning of his sophomore season onward yes same with
Goudreau and it was the same with Galchenyuk who used to be held in the same regard the guy was
the third overall pick right you know I this might actually happen and I think it's going to
me a bad idea and if so if you feel like if you're building uh like a staff as a manager and stuff
and you feel like somebody doesn't have the right attitude for the culture you're starting to build
i don't i'm not gonna hate you for moving on from that person you know if they if they you better
be right though it can't bite you exactly that's the thing you better be right about your uh your
feelings towards that person because if if patrick line is just uh a bit of a character and you don't
want anybody with a personality then you're wrong but if they have if they have insider information
on the way he meshes with the locker room then and they want to move on from that then yeah well
the Jets the Jets locker room was for at the end of last season was known to be split and I they
even talked Blake Wheeler I think was even came out publicly and said I needed to work on my like
leadership skills and stuff like that there was something there was something there as well and
I don't know the specifics and I don't know that that any of that ever came out about what
actually happen but there certainly has been personality conflicts with this Jets team
it's been noted uh so it'll be interesting to see what happens it's just such a shame because this
is a team that was a couple games away from the Stanley Cup like two years ago and you know yes
they lost Bufflin and Myers and Trouba in one summer but it's a uh it's a team that still has
all the pieces and you've got a Vezna winning goaltender and you've got a guy that can score
you 50 goals uh on a good season and probably 40 with his eyes closed and Shifley and like I said
wheeler like these are good this is a good hockey team and i don't know how you win the value if you
trade patrick line at 21 years old i don't know how you win the value exchange i just don't i don't
get it i don't see how it's how it'd be possible it's like trading willie you know you're not gonna
get better what you dish out that's true that's well and an interesting an interesting thought
so you know and i and i did a trade tree about this about you know the second trade and if you
look at it like the bruins clearly lost i thought but do you think the bruins organization feel like
they lost that deal they were in the cup final last year no they went all the way to game seven
i know dallas is there now but you know you look at the circumstances and you're able to talk
yourself out of that we went to the cup final we have a president's trophy under our belt we've
done this we've done that but like we're a consistent contender oh yeah we really got
hammered in that deal i i don't think they feel that way i bet you they're like see fix the culture
and look at the team that we got in boston the the organization doesn't miss him at all maybe
they should but i don't think they do i mean they had yeah i mean the thing is is that like
had boston not you know gone out and signed david backus to that deal uh they probably could have
held on to tyler sagan and they would have been that much better and they probably have another
cup by now there you go like you could have i mean you could have had both guys like yeah you
didn't need to sign david back as to that deal when they did then everybody was like that's a
bad idea and it was a bad idea hey here's the thought if tory crew gets traded does char come
back like it kind of depends what happens with that team like if you're zidano char you're 43
you just went through the extraordinary season that you went through that everyone's gone through
and you don't feel like the team is better, I don't know.
Do you come back?
Do you come back?
Because, like, now who replaces Krug's minutes?
It ain't going to be you.
You're 43.
Who's it going to be?
That's a good question.
I don't know the answer to that.
I also – I wonder with that, you know, with retiring,
like the thing is that it's probably less about how good the team is
at this point and more about, like,
what am I going to do with all this spare time?
you know what i mean like if you could still play it it's like i i just don't know what i'm
gonna do with myself so i might as well just keep going until i can't anymore you know what i mean
yeah like what else am i gonna do i don't know like i've got millions of dollars but like
at a certain point it's like i don't know what the hell to do like what do i do so funny
well that's all you've done your whole life i don't know i don't know that was that was the um
that was the very uh when sovia jersevich uh worked for uh sportsnet i got to basically be
her shadow a few times uh for the visiting room you know whoever was coming to town to visit the
leaves and that was there was it was such a candid response from jerome mcginley when the avalanche
were in town because we asked him like hey you know what's what's the end of your career gonna
look like you have this milestone in front of you that milestone you know how long do you think
you're going to play and you know are you going to be like jogger and he's like no i got kids
like no i don't want to like when i'm done i'm done and i think he was done two years later
char has three kids by the way oh wow okay yeah and they probably live in boston i have a question
i have a question what is the cost of each pick if you were to buy a pick off of a team
what's that cost you and the reason i bring this up is i'm going to read you the detroit red wings
uh mark stall trade so the red wings have acquired mark stall and a second round pick in 2021
from the new york rangers in exchange for future consideration so essentially that means nothing
you're reading that could be now the actual dollars are a little bit less than than what
his cap it is however you could argue that the market for a second round pick when you look at
something like that is like three to four million dollars now i said in a tweet yesterday that
toronto paid a million for about three seconds of robin leonard to get a fifth however it turned out
to be only 180 grand or 190 grand uh because of the cap space and it's prorated and all of those
things right still a lot of money for like a pick that has a probably less than 50 chance
significantly less than 50 chance i'm making the nhl so i'm interested i'm interested to see if
there is a is there a bar set for that like what does a first round pick cost you because if if
we're going grading on last year a first round pick will cost you 6.25 million dollars which
was the Patrick Marlowe to Carolina who's who's the GM of the Rangers again I could in my head
he's Jimmy Altieri but that's the Sopranos character that he looks like Jeff Gordon sorry
he looks like jimmy altieri damn it jimmy the rat he's a rat um they don't
need the cap space the way the leafs needed it so the leafs needed carolina to
eat that pick or they were or sorry that contract of marlo's or they were boned
so if you're carolina you're like here's how badly or we know how badly you need this
but give us a first say no more don't worry about it and the leafs in desperate need go
okay here detroit's got 27.3 million in cap space the rangers have 20 they have a bunch of guys to
resign as well but they got 20 million bucks so they don't need it desperately i'm willing to bet
it wasn't eisenman who approached gordon i think it was probably gordon who said listen we're giving
you a second here's what it is like we want we want to be done with this contract here's a second
what do you think and if you're stevie why you look at your roster and you go free second cool
right that's what i think it was and a warm body for the next season yeah so it's easy to look at
stalls cap it and marlo's cap it see how similar they were and go whoa what the hell but to me it's
about need it's about desperation the leafs were desperate the rangers aren't desperate
if that makes sense while they've still got to sign because i'm smart
d'angelo and who else is that they have to resign there's some rfas there that need to
let me look uh philip d giuseppe ryan strome oh boy um yeah anthony d'angelo like you said
And Alexander Georgiev is a fascinating situation.
But if they want, they can just go into next season
with Sesturkin and Lundqvist and be A-OK if they really wanted to.
Did you leave off the most important name on that list?
Who is it?
Maybe.
Greg McKegg.
With a leg for an arm and an arm for a leg.
Also Matt Boleski.
Oh, well, they're not going to re-sign Matt Boleski.
I don't think they will.
Yo, this team, the Rangers, they're paying four guys not to play for them.
They're paying Brad Richards because he was a compliance buyout.
They're going to be paying him until 2026, although it's not against the cap.
Dan Girardi is going to be 1.1 against the cap for the next three seasons.
Ryan Spooner is 300 grand this year.
and this upcoming season costing them about 6.1 against the cap kevin shattenkirk is that against
the cap though yeah according to cap friendly this upcoming season it's about 6.1 against the cap
and then the following two seasons it's 1.4 so i don't there's probably something to do with the
bonuses there but uh oh that's freaking tough dude oh gross kevin shattenkirk having his cake
and eating it too he's still making a load of money and he signed for less than two million
dollars because i don't know i'm demarcus cousins and i feel like going to win a championship yep
how'd that go demarcus sorry that's actually worked out really well for him i think he will
low-key get a pretty good little deal this offseason shattenkirk shattenkirk yeah for
sure he's revived his career he's uh it's that's the perception of your value is so weird well
because he was like the most wanted guy when he was up i remember that and it was so weird because
he was the caps big fish for that playoff run and it was against the leafs and i remember when
shattenkirk was on the ice i'm like good this guy this guy stinks yeah he he was good on the
power play good offensively in his own zone awful yeah awful i loved when he was on the ice
he also um then he gets his big deal it gets bought out it's so weird he got uh i found him
to be his temper to be a little bit weird in that series right he was they could get under his skin
easy to target yeah i loved playing against kevin that was great it was that was uh nate
schmidt's coming out party remember yes it was boy was that good holy he was amazing there was
oh the leafs really could have won man because schattenkirk was so easy to target and uh you
know who else was in their top six carl alsner oh yes no wonder the leafs were hanging around damn
it it was it was strange uh for schattenkirk because all those years in st louis he was never
really a big star he was kind of like the third most important defenseman and then that trade
deadline when Washington got him he was like okay the rumors started and he was the big fish but it
just kind of came out of nowhere he became this big star this big get to to get but it was never
backed up by years of him being this great player yeah like he was good in St. Louis but it wasn't
like he was yeah I think he was just the only guy I think you just buy that was available that year
bell of the ball as Steve would call it and then but and then it let it kept going into the off
season and then he was free agent and then he got a big deal from New York and and he wanted to go
in new york that was the thing like he was never he was never going anywhere else he wanted to be
that's where he's from didn't work out obviously but that was the that was the thing he wanted to
be there so generally speaking if you're satisfied with your top power play defenseman do not go out
and sign a guy who was his previous team's top power play defenseman you know what i mean because
they're not going to get their cookies and they're going to be miserable that's a good point
tyson berry yeah i mean i'm talking about him but like i was i was texting drew uh producer drew
from sportsnet because obviously he saw the tory krug thing and immediately he's like really and
i'm like okay a it's hilarious that you have to choose between tory krug and kale mccarr yeah
yeah you do have to choose between tory krug and kale mccarr you got to pick one your second
power play unit's not going to play because your first one is going to consist of one of Krug and
Makar and then probably what is it McKinnon, Rantanen, Landeskog and Kadri yeah you don't
need a second unit just leave it that's so good yeah so I mean I'm not saying don't go out and
get good players and I'm not saying Torrey Krug can't uh do good things for you at five on five
but that's uh shattenkirk's one of those weird tales where similar to barry if he can't get on
your top hour power play and get those cookies what's his value to your team right bingo yeah
and you don't want to be moving a guy who had 70 points off the first power play so the other guy
can actually you know perform a role on your team which is what the leafs did this year
big mistake they took morgan riley and they're like don't worry yeah and he was like actually
i wasn't bobby ryan bought out by the ottawa senators um which i'm actually surprised by
because it ottawa buying someone out is significant like it saves them three million dollars which is
the long and short of it or i think it was three and a half it's long listen it's they were taking
a lot of criticism for it they have no money and they found a way to save three and a half million
Of course they bought Bobby Ryan out.
Of course they did.
It makes perfect sense.
It's logical.
It shouldn't even be criticized.
What should be criticized is they called it a hockey move.
Stop!
Guy just won the Masterton.
He's an amazing story.
He probably could have provided value to your team next year in a season
which you're not going to compete in.
No way.
There's no chance.
it's clearly a financial decision and you called it a hockey one stop lying yeah really really i
know i'm lying you could have just said nothing you could have we thank bobby for his blue blue
let's say it was a hockey decision what us buying you out was a hockey decision is just saying you
suck yeah yeah we bought you out as a hockey decision if you guys bought me out and said it
was a podcast decision probably i would assume i'm not very good at podcasting
you know what i mean yeah i don't understand oh yeah it was a hockey decision
what i mean he he was never going to live up to the contract that he had
but but that wasn't the point that wasn't the point that wasn't the point his role
changed and you're on this garbage team and you're a great story and you know a hundred
days sober comes back scores a hat trick and he would have been several hundred hundred days sober
you know coming back he you know he could have played the next two seasons and then who knows
maybe you could have even brought him back you know at the end of his contract on this cheap deal
i don't know i don't know maybe who knows maybe it was pressure from his camp listen
buy us out set us free so we can go play somewhere else yeah could be i doubt it i doubt so at the
end of this coming season so the next off season there are as many people on this zoom call as the
ottawa senators have on their roster they have three guys signed through next year wow so and
now they're about to draft some guys it would have been nice just to have bobby ryan to just
some consistency you know just be a warm body with a pulse yeah
this is the this is the thing man they're gonna have you know all these great draft picks
and then if if you're the Sens though here's the unfortunate thing they're gonna draft all
these guys and hopefully they're gonna be good players but not too good because if they are you
gotta pay him yeah true that's the devil about good players it's a bummer come on man what are
we sell them for god's sake sell them as a hockey decision it would make the team better um dustin
bufflin unlikely to ever play in the nhl again that's unfortunate it is it is that's a sports
net uh sports net staff story here um elliot friedman said on headlines last night it's very
unlikely dustin bufflin is ever going to play again he is 35 years old um and had did say in
training camp in september he'd lost the desire teams have asked one of the teams have uh that
has asked according to elliot is the minnesota wild because they figured that you know he's got
ties to minnesota and they could probably use them um and and friedman said that they're the
only team that really had a chance but according to bufflin's agent uh it is doubtful he'll ever
play again and it's a shame because man what a great player and accomplished some amazing things
and for him to go out like that is sort of a bummer it's there or it's not yeah you know what
i mean it's there it's not and if you're you know you've been doing something for 30 35 years
as intensely as he's played hockey i can understand going yeah i'm done yeah well and like
the end of it you wish it was a little better you know yeah a little more romantic the weird
fight with winnipeg you know yeah well and his fitness has never been one of his strong points
and he's had this busted foot or ankle whatever it was lord knows if it's even properly healed
by now lord knows what kind of shape he's in or if he's been working out at all right
when you're done you're done like i i admire a guy for knowing when he's done
you know because you always go oh you could but you could still play people still want you you
could go and win a championship he's already won a championship and he's made a shitload of money
yeah exactly live your life this is this is like i i don't know guys professional athletes are
wired different than everyone on the show uh they they have a different compete but i remember
i remember looking at like conor mcgregor for example after the mayweather fight and he had
like a newborn baby i think he was 29 he had like several hundred million in the bank i'm like dude
retire yeah you've won the lottery you have more money than you'll ever need ever you got you know
his life partner i don't know i don't think they're married you got this kid you still have
your health how rare is it that a professional athlete of any type let alone a mixed martial
artist escapes with their health and uh wow he's you talk about a guy who maybe he should have
retired yes absolutely for a variety of reasons jesus dude what are you doing yeah um he's
unfortunately yeah asshole I think is what you're looking for yeah yeah absolutely um a couple things
on Montreal first off Max Domi according to his new agent Darren Ferris has not requested a trade
he wants to stay in Montreal and obviously when you go from and Eric Engel said this perfectly
you go from 77 points to 40 points uh or is it 70 points to 44 whatever it is um and then you're
centering the fourth line in the playoffs it's not great you think Max Domi stays in Montreal
yes yes i do um there's there's a tweet from um jack hon who is a
sorry jesus choking i tried to mute myself there's jack hon who used to be with the
organization he was uh briefly an assistant coach uh with the toronto marlies and he was
basically glowing about all the great things max domi does and the little things even in the season
where his numbers weren't as big um there's a few things that the montreal canadians need and
and none of them are less offense you know what yeah right they they got up they should bring him
back absolutely you know they they do need to talk about roles like one thing like if i were max
domi i'd probably be pretty frustrated not knowing what position i'm gonna play every night yeah
yeah you know what i would be frustrated by that too i get that and you don't if you play wing for
the rest of your career or for the rest of your time in montreal that's fine but like tell me
yeah don't put me a center if someone gets hurt you know one of those things what am i doing
what am i doing we know philip dono is going to be there for a long time and he's going to be a
center we know nick suzuki is going to be there for a long time he's going to be a center you're
to give me big money to be third don't think so don't think so if you're max you think you can be
first yep but they won't even contribute to it or dedicate a good landing spot for uh in montreal
well they seem to think so a lot of people are suggesting you know that's been the rumor for
quite some time now and you talk about a can you imagine can you imagine a power play
that features some semblance
of, it's probably
Weber instead of Petrie. Petrie would be on
the second unit. And the line A.
And Suzuki.
And Suzuki. And Drew
at one. You got Domi's playmaking ability.
You have Weber's touch
of death at that point.
I think Domi would be the guy going the other way.
I think Domi would be a part of the
lining deal.
Very interesting.
back right that's what so uh like Domi Cole Caulfield oh that's an interesting little
conversation there Adam Wilde I like that I think and then with Domi he probably doesn't
need to play center in Winnipeg I mean maybe or maybe he does but whatever he's he's a player
that can and like behind Shifley and Kyle Connor he wouldn't need to right so he could play wing
so that replaces line a on the wing obviously there'd have to be some picks or some sort of
It's not a straight-up one-for-one, but there's something there maybe.
Oh, I really like that.
You know what we need?
What do we need?
What this Roger Sportsnet employee needs,
we need a blockbuster all-Canadian deal.
That would be cool.
I'd like that.
Anybody.
Anybody.
The Jets and the Habs who have no rivalry whatsoever.
All of a sudden, bang, it's right there.
How soon after the Stanley Cup is awarded
that we're going to see a blockbuster, by the way?
12 hours.
12 hours?
Okay.
That's what I give it.
We're just waiting.
The other thing I wanted to mention quickly is Jeff Petrie's extension.
It's a four-year deal that pays him $6.25 million,
not starting this season, this coming season, but the next.
Now, he's 32.
He's played extremely well.
Right shot defenseman among the most valuable in the NHL.
However, 32.
Contract takes him until he's 37.
It doesn't even kick in this year.
Now, it's only a $750,000 raise from what he's currently making,
so it's not like it's that much more for the canadians in the interim but you sure are relying
on jeff petrie to be very very good for a very very long time especially with a flat cap for the
next three years and this is the thing right like no criticism of the deal has anything to do with
the first year of it well you could actually because the first year doesn't even kick until
next year it's like not this coming season but the next year yeah possibly i mean i don't think
he's going to age so badly that the wheels fall off within two years five 6.25 cap hasn't gone up
that much he's 37 lord knows he takes a funny bump in the knee something happens with his hip
his back his anything you know lord knows but i don't know at the end of the day he's a good
hockey player and there's no reason to think he's going to get hurt until he does
you know what i mean fair enough yeah i mean this is the problem the problem i have with
like free agency and signing guys and extensions and we always say it's too much and we always say
what if they get old and what if they get hurt well what if what if anybody
nathan mckinnon has the best contract in the national hockey league and what if he gets hurt
now what colorado like yeah you can't live like that so i think your evaluation goes
is jeff petrie good yes do a barring major injury do we think he's going to be effective
for at least this long yes yes sign them go all right let's do the press conference guys
we have so many questions do we
the steve dangle press conference
first question comes from grady underscore matthew grady wants to know how do you eliminate
the tax advantage
for teams. Each player
gets taxed at the same rate by the league.
Toronto players, highest state
tax rate. Providence.
Pay no extra. Florida
players pay equivalent tax.
Do you guys think this is a problem the NHL should be
working to solve?
No.
No.
What was that?
A little 2D chair over there?
What's ironic, though, is I think
Jesse just properly
illustrated Gary Bettman's response to any
complaints about that he doesn't give a shit no no i don't think you worry about that no he doesn't
care and listen because then you're constantly adjusting based on local law like yeah like if
you're a leaf fan or you know habs fan or any of the places that have a high tax rate yeah i
understand why you're mad um gary's not catering to you dude he's not that's not an nhl local laws
are not an nhl problem there is all right i mean that's it dude i would love it i would love it and
i've talked about it in the past like uh i got all snooty when you know teams were complaining
about the the leafs and bringing players over on their own dime and well if that's an advantage
for the least then you got to take away their tax advantage or whatever i see it as a tantrum i don't
actually think the nhl is going to do it of course they're not going to do it the idea that
there needs to be absolute parity to me uh is impossible uh this idea that that there's not
going to be like you know even if what are they is the nhl like if they did that is the nhl going
to change the weather in florida so that it's not as nice to live there like there's going to be
benefits and drawbacks to every city that you go to so the reality is that there will never be
complete parity so this idea that this somehow for this league to be proper or for it to run
properly that these leagues that these teams need to be on the same footing on every single issue
is just it's incorrect it's impossible and it's not uh it's also not something that that's not
why we have leagues like this we have a league and we have these teams because locally they're
different they're different markets you know matt matt duchesne signing in in nashville because he
likes country music well i don't think that new york could offer him that you know what i mean
like i just you know toronto doesn't even have a country station in toronto central because it's
just not a huge form of music here they have one in durham region they have one in hamilton but
they don't have one in toronto because it's just not it's not the same so master shane would sign
in baumanville not true so he'd sign in yeah he'd sign in uh he'd sign in oshawa uh but that's that's
the thing like it's a it's every and players are going to make decisions on their lifestyle based
on their lifestyle that's going to happen uh but if you're trying to eliminate local conditions
forget it it's just not going to happen that's just you just will not get it's too difficult
it's all you can call it is unfortunate and move on next question comes from connor walsh 44 on
twitter i know adam is really sold on signing hammock but have you ever considered the leaf
signing Dylan DeMello he's really good defensively and was only moved at the deadline for a third
round pick seems undervalued what do you think uh I love Dylan DeMello um I think he's a great
story in fact um once again when I was moonlighting as a as a reporter or when I was cosplaying as a
reporter uh the Sharks came to town for the Leafs and Dylan DeMello had just been called up for I
think his first nhl stint and we locked eyes and he went ah and i went ah because uh we got to work
together a little bit when he was with the mississauga steelheads cool yeah he was playing
junior back then and i go uh i go uh he goes what are you doing here i go i go i'm working for
sports net sports net what are you doing here i caught myself halfway through the question
And I think his response was, playing for the Sharks.
No, yeah, so I would love to bring the local boy home.
Yeah, he only made $800,000 last year.
Yeah, he only cost the third-round pick.
If he's going into unrestricted free agency,
and enough of us are talking about him,
he's not going to get that in free agency.
If he does sign for less in Toronto, it'll be his choice.
Yeah, I don't think he will either.
take your money you made 800 grand last year you got to make some money now
yeah that is especially with everything that's gone on and yeah i had a message this morning
from somebody and well meaning said hey do you think the leaf should pick up jake debrusk and
my response would be the leaf should pick up anybody that will make them better jake debrusk
is a good player so like yeah yeah any team would want jake debrusk the problem is how where
yeah how right you just i take him he provides some things they lack i would take him too
The Leafs should get McDavid.
Where and how?
Jesse's got a great idea.
Jesse makes a great point.
Jesse, next question.
Steve, your story you told was when you tell the waiter,
you too, when they say enjoy your meal.
Or at the movies.
The movie is the better one.
Enjoy your movie, you too.
This question comes from Reese McQuaid.
Reese wants to know,
does Freddie take a team-friendly deal
to keep playing with the Leafs?
Something like maybe 5 mil for two years?
No.
Then go to free agency?
Why would he take a team-friendly deal when he's in his early 30s?
Because of the cap not moving is what Reese suggests.
There are so many players who are in just ass situations,
and Freddie is one of them.
Freddie is one of them.
He should be heading into the season ready to cash in.
and it's just not going to happen.
He might, you know, if he does well this season,
he might be able to get seven somewhere.
Which is not bad.
No, but is the length going to be there?
Is the length of the contract?
Like, prior to this, like, contracts were getting out of control.
And Lord knows, you know, the lockout clock was ticking.
contracts we're getting out of control and uh nothing will bring them back down to earth
uh like nobody having any money whatsoever but um you do bring up a good point um if
the only reason that trading frederick anderson makes any kind of sense is he might walk for
nothing if you're kyle you should be having that conversation with him you know that you're calling
him up to say hey man i'm not shopping you extend that call a little bit further to that point would
you like to sign an extension with us because i'd be interested in it why wouldn't they he's a good
goalie he is a good goalie he is a good goalie how long and how much money i would say at least
two years is he gonna do a two-year extension if freddie asks for 6.25 i and for two years
i signed that deal tomorrow he's a good sign that deal tomorrow absolutely that's a lot of money
steve it's not that much more than yeah it's a million plays it's a it's a fourth line it's a
it's a peering vol raise literally so it's nothing yes keep doing that like all we've said
consistently on the show over the last whatever years the where you get in trouble is the three
mid-level six mil level contracts and then the leafs just keep signing these mid-tier guys to
just handing out three million dollars and if you can get better value at your goaltender and not
give freddy six six million and a half or whatever it would be maybe you spend that money somewhere
else the question is on who and what yeah that's that's yeah it's what it is but getting killed
better use somewhere else you know they're getting killed giving those raises to guys who are on
their third line you know what i mean you're starting goaltender that's okay i think it's
okay to give your starting goaltender a raise if they're good or if you can go out and get
darcy kemper for three and a half because or whatever it is four million dollars because the
coyotes are so poorly run um yeah you absolutely go out and do it but in absence of any of those
deals if you have a chance to get freddie at a slight raise on a short term yeah absolutely it's
not necessarily even about the six million dollar number it might be a three million or like a four
million dollar goalie plus a two million dollar goalie or a plus like a one million dollar goal
you do a tandem it's just is that the dedicated money you want freddie anderson probably not
especially with jack campbell making two million bucks but um you know again it's so that there's
the remember that when there is no freddie anderson there's the absence of freddie anderson
and can you get a 915 save percentage out of somebody else for less money and and that's
basically what you're looking for right here's a question can you get a higher save percentage
out of frederick anderson because you have jack campbell all year well and that's a good question
the habs are making a pretty huge bet that you can get a better save percentage out of carrie price
because you have jake allen yeah excellent yeah i don't know i i think if he's up for it which
i don't i don't necessarily think you don't make his choice you don't you make the choice for him
freddie you're starting this many games this year yeah well no there's there's that issue
altogether like of course he's going to want to play in every game your job as a coach and
a general manager to say this is how many you're playing like it or lump it don't care like it or
lump it don't god you're you're such a great dad well it's just it's sort of like what like why
are we letting the tail wag the dog here he is getting paid they will sell him how many games
he's going to be in if he's upset about it boohoo i like sorry i i it's it's clearly clearly not
worked doing it the other way we have definitive proof it has not worked what else do you need
like if this was if freddie anderson was going into the playoffs and they're like you know what
freddie we're going to limit you to 20 minutes a night uh that's all we're going to do and he
He had a 945 save percentage.
I can understand why Freddie would be like, hey,
let me play the other two periods.
But it's not like Freddie Anderson's been stellar in the playoffs.
He has not.
He had good numbers this year, but we've talked about that.
He wasn't in the playoffs this year.
Well, and then there's that.
That's a whole other conversation.
He wasn't in the playoffs.
So, that doesn't count.
Whoever brought that question up in the first place, though, Jesse,
it's a great question, and I think it's something –
Reese, I think it's something the Leafs should absolutely explore.
but if you're Frederick Anderson, I mean, it's all, it's all about risk.
If I don't sign this deal next year, I could make seven, eight,
something along those lines, but I don't know.
I got my buddy Austin here. I know I'm the starter here.
Is, is this free agency is interesting this year because is,
do i really want to move right now you know what i mean do i really wanna and then you start going
oh well this city's nightlife and this and that and uh you don't got to worry about that for the
next year or some you know where's the best place to go on secluded walks which city has the best
secluded walks because that's basically all you can do right now yeah i i don't know i don't know
It's worth having the conversation with Freddie.
Next question.
Got another one?
Our dear friend at nametags on Twitter asked an interesting question.
How do you think the championship parade is going to be handled
for each of the teams?
I don't think you have one.
You know –
In Florida, you might.
It's Florida and Texas.
I think both states might try and do something.
You're right.
They're going to do it.
Maybe they do it inside the arena with like 5,000 people or something like that.
People are stupid, dude.
What do you want?
In Ontario, there's a place called Wasega Beach that it's been shut down.
They had to shut it down so that – how many people actually live in Wasega Beach?
It's like several thousand, right?
Right.
No one lives there.
It's old people and that is it.
But there is a beach.
and uh for the past couple nights there have been enormous car rallies with hundreds of people
none of them wearing masks all of them recording cars go vroom
um every one of them to a man and woman is a loser but people they want to get together
who goes to car vroom vroom shows and is cool jesse with the smile i just thought it was funny
oh when you press the gas it went vroom what's gonna happen next time you go i bet the same
shit i think you're losing the point of the question yeah i know so i go to classic car
shows i don't know what's also i went to the the auto show when it was on last year i like cars
i went with my dad he's a big car guy yeah we walked around it was a nice family moment i don't
know why you're hating on my family you learned about the cars and you're not being a loud
asshole and congregating with a bunch of unmasked other assholes yeah that's true so i and i mean
we saw it like when vancouver won playoff games like people are getting out in the street and
they're going nuts on the corner and they're honking their horn and stuff i don't think that
the parade is something that's organized by the team yeah right so i actually think they should
have a parade so that they can organize it and control it the issue is going to be if if you
just leave people with their own devices they're gonna be assholes that's why i think you do it in
an arena because you can you can control it a lot easier in an arena than you can out on the street
because then you you control who comes in even better uh you're in florida you're in texas
have it in a stadium yeah call it like a rally you know it's a championship rally
that's inside of an arena.
Do it at Tom Brady's house.
Bronco will be there.
He'll be the MC.
It'll be great.
No, they should have a parade,
but it should be organized.
Okay.
Because, you know, to the Stars' credit,
you know, they're doing the distancing thing.
Yeah.
Whatever.
And they have the rules.
And totally, just do it and control it.
A listener who went to one of those DM'd
and said that it was very safe.
They felt extremely safe at the Dallas Stars watch party.
Again, people are going to push as far as they can push on this stuff,
so it'll be interesting to see what works and what doesn't.
This question comes from Thomas Shea, or maybe Tomas,
because there's an accent de goo on the A.
Are you guys part of the chaotic minority or the civilized majority
when it comes to ketchup placement and French fries?
so there's two types of ketchup and french fries people you know where this is going yeah i do you
spray the ketchup all over the fries or do you spray it on the side and then dip your fries
it's on the side don't cool down your fries don't be an idiot don't you don't cool down your
reason no you put you put the thing on the side no no and then you dip and then the way the fries
don't get soggy and crappy do not you're gonna lose the essence of the fry if you're letting
that ketchup soak in past that crunchy outside and then it's warm on the inside and you're not
gonna get any of that so what like what is this i like nice debate hot french fries yes hot french
fries i want my ketchup to go when i put it in oh it's oh someone's gonna clip that when i take
the french fry and dip it in the ketchup i want a sound and how do you eat your french fries
with these things and you're gonna cover them with ketchup what are you a child
i used to eat that way when i was in elementary school if you're an adult a grown-up person
you dip your fries or you call yourself a so you differ i am a unfortunately i am with you guys
no i don't like i don't like being on the same team as you when it comes to these debates
you guys are usually on the wrong side of history but this time i gotta agree with you all right
all right it's the right it's the right side to be on yeah there's a reason those little cups
were invented yes no there's somebody had to make those because the right way is to dip your
dip your fries now if you want that cheese stuff all over your fries that's already hot
right so it keeps it hot i know i'm murdering the planet but ketchup is better in those little
shitty cups it tastes better i don't know what it is but it works something about it and it's
just better um i have another question here if you guys want yeah let's do one more no one more
end the show abruptly now okay this is from uh michael on twitter as well so what's uh what's
a bigger like Leafs hurt pain seeing an ex-Leaf win the cup is it Polak or Shen I don't I don't
either hurt me I don't care no well Luke Shen did not play yesterday and Polak didn't play in these
playoffs at all yes but both names if either team wins will get on the cup neither I don't I'm happy
for them like I'm yeah I'd be happy for Polak and I like Luke Shen is like actually this kind of cool
like redemption tale like i'd have been happy for cadre if he won if colorado won the cup this year
which they easily could have uh if cadre was hoisting it i would have been just as happy as
when i saw phil kessel when the season after he was traded out of toronto like it it's yeah man
like i'm happy for these guys like i cheered for them there's there's no it's not painful like
the thing is uh that polak and shen well shen was traded for van reams like in a great trade
And Black was just not a fit for what the team wanted to be.
And Mike Babcock put him in positions that he was not going to be successful in.
And then, like, yeah, like, I don't think that that bothers me.
I don't like the idea that you can't just enjoy someone else
who used to play for your team enjoying some success.
It's like, that's weird to me.
I'm trying to think of the last time.
If we had a general manager that was like, okay, if I was a Boston Bruins fan
yeah and i traded tyler sagan for louis erickson and the next year dallas goes on to win a cup
with tyler sagan that would probably be painful because that's a great player who was traded for
character issues rather than then you know like he was just immature he looks stupid clearly yeah
yeah you're looking like an idiot that would be that would be an issue for me uh but i don't think
anything else other than that i'm trying to think of the last time i cheered against a guy in the
playoffs just because he was a former leaf and i i can't think of any like unless you're a total
villain i can't think of any nothing even bozak who like we criticize but like just the criticism
was don't put him on the first line yeah it wasn't even a criticism against him yeah it was a
criticism of their valuation of tyler bozak and when he was when he was a second or third line
center he was great leaf fans by and large cheered for phil kessel yep like are there are there any
guys in the league you hate just for uh like sports reasons like marsha are you not a big
fan of cory barry yeah cory barry yes if i i don't like no and it's not that i listen he's got a great
redemption story this year for sure but cory barry is one of the biggest assholes this league's ever
seen on the ice we're not talking about like as a person we're talking on the ice like the
reason you don't like the other guy on the team yeah he's a redemption story because he's putting
on more points he's still an asshole yeah nothing was more satisfying to me than watching him
walk off the ice at the winter classic that clip of him having to leave a minute in was like
perfect beautiful because he's such a jerk but i like i don't think cory perry's like that and
i don't i don't know what he's like personally but i don't imagine that he's a jerk i think
I don't know anything about Corey Perry.
I don't know him either.
I don't know anything about him.
I hated Ryan Kessler.
Oh, that's a good one.
And I hated Ryan Kessler's post-game interviews.
I hated the way he talked to people.
Yeah.
But, you know, it was sort of like that was Ryan Kessler, right?
And then I remember him going after – it was this random thing,
and I'm surprised it didn't blow up into something bigger.
Remember he tweeted at Ryan Johansson?
They hate each other.
They hate each other.
I hope you're ready for next season.
And everybody's like, Ryan, can you walk yet?
like your hips are degenerating like are you sure like and then they were talking about like
fighting like fist fighting each other like just in public and then the bruins had like a 2011 cup
reunion zoom a few months ago and like kessler they were i think he was like tweeting at them
while they were doing the zoom and the guys on the bruins were live shit talking like he's really
he's leaning into it yeah yeah he's a good villain um but yeah no i i uh i i think yeah
i actively rooted against cory perry uh in most things while he was very successful and then
obviously when injuries take over what are you gonna do like ah sucker like that's the thing
about sports is there's gonna be guys you hate but when they go down in injuries it's like well
that really sucks i don't like it's like you know i don't like the ottawa senators when they're good
but when they're when they've got an owner allegedly who's not the best guy and who should
definitely sell the team not allegedly he should definitely sell the team um and like what am i
gonna say oh i really love it when the leafs come in and curb stomp the ottawa senators
come on they play 82 games and they finish with 10 points yeah it's not fair i want the senators
to be good i want the sabers to be good i've cheered for them at different times the andrew
Hammond run that was cool that was amazing yeah that was so cool and like Curtis Lazar was eating
burgers that fans threw at them it was a great time to watch the Sens it was cool it was very
very cool they've had some magical runs and that's the thing like that 15 games or whatever where
Eric Carlson was the best player in the world in the playoffs like he was just literally the best
he's amazing so yeah like I think I think you just um I think it's circumstantial but when it comes
to players that like you can't stand those two are the ones that stick out to me it's Kessler and
I know a lot of people felt that way about Chris Pronger I loved Chris Pronger I loved him but he
was an asshole he yeah on the eyes like I don't know what he was like off he was like old school
asshole like I feel like Perry and other guys like do a lot of after the whistle things
whereas just chris pronger would just brutalize you legally yes like just not have it called
ever cross-check you in the spine yeah over and over again wasn't there a stanley cup winner
against chris pronger and the guy and didn't somebody in an interview go there's nothing
that's making me happier right now than seeing chris pronger lose it was adam burrish said i'd
love to punch that guy in the face that's what he said and then they asked chris pronger about
it after and then cool as a cucumber guy just lost the stanley cup and he goes uh where's he
gonna do that the minors and like within two years burrish was in the minors i'm pretty sure
that's a great dig it's a great dig and you're chris pronger i already won the cup yeah you know
first time you know yeah yeah anyway um so you know what we'll wrap it up there we'll be back
wednesday lots going on uh we probably will have a stanley cup by wednesday and then we'll probably
have some big trades by Wednesday.
If not, if we don't
have a Stanley Cup by Wednesday, it'll be Game 7.
So that'll be a huge lead-in. Game 7
will be that night.
So we may want to delay. We'll see.
Yeah, we'll see how it goes.
Let's record Thursday if Game 7
is Wednesday. There you go.
That makes a lot more sense.
That might be for the best, yeah.
Well, listen, we'll figure it out then, but
in the meantime, have a fantastic start
to your week. We love you. Thanks so much.
