Starting point is 00:00:00 Sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where TaskRabbit comes in and I think you should check this out because here's the deal. I don't have the stuff because you got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing.
Starting point is 00:00:28 The chemicals, you got to have the right chemicals. see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list 15 off your first task at taskrabbit.ca or on the task rabbit app using the promo code Dangle. Taskers across Canada book up fast, especially for same day tasks. Get $15 off your first task right now with the promo code Dangle at TaskRabbit.ca or the TaskRabbit app. You should
Starting point is 00:01:10 download that TaskRabbit.ca code Dangle. Hey, so we are just 24 hours away from Stouffville. Oh, Storm and Stouffville. That's not what I thought you were going to say. No, it's Stouffville. I thought you were going to say four nations facing off.
Starting point is 00:01:38 Well, there's that. And here are the rules and blah, blah, blah. No, basically Stouffville tomorrow. We will watch the four nations thing, but we're also going to do the live show beforehand. Boston Pizza, 1060 Hoover Park Drive.
Starting point is 00:01:50 And by the way, it's brought to you by Molson. And Molson is an official partner of the Leafs and the PWHL. And here's the most fun part about it all. You guys ready? You guys ready? Good words.
Starting point is 00:02:03 You can play Call Your Shot. $40,000 worth of prizing. We're talking VIP hockey trips, game tickets, gift cards, and more. And you order a Molson Canadian and you can play. That's it. Can you look as hot as I do right now? I don't know if you can look as hot as Steve Dangle in his official Four Nations face-off jersey. Jesse, you didn't put yours on?
Starting point is 00:02:25 No, I'm the only one here who's not a corporate shill. Except that sweater I know is a former client of ours. So you are a corporate shill. Nice try, Jesse. You didn't bring up the weather. Oh, yeah. I thought you got to do your dad duty and bring up the weather. Well, it's going to be snowy.
Starting point is 00:02:51 In certain parts of Ontario, it's 20 to 40 centimeters. for us they're saying only 15 to 20 and it starts right around if you want me to check it specifically because they've updated i'd love to know the weather network didn't you say it was supposed to start like as soon as the doors open for i yes and this is where this happened last year i swear this happened we had a rainstorm in oh that was last year uh it was pretty wild because it was in the so here's what they don't know okay okay so that the the precipitation gets up to 60 in the 3 p.m hour good word okay uh and then gets and stays at 90 oh my gosh for the gta or toronto for for gta for toronto downtown until 7 a.m where it downgrades to 70 so we're gonna
Starting point is 00:03:38 get snow from from what do you say five yes through till 7 a.m at least yeah so we're talking like damn 15 hours of it and what's interesting about this is that if the temperature they're not totally sure if the temperature is going to be what they're predicting it could be rain because it is it's possible that it rains instead but they're predicting snow because they want to be safe but it could be it could be rain if any of you send this to my mom oh no i'm gonna kick your ass you're never gonna get to go no i she might she will stand in front of the door she will i'm gonna have to try to like run around the house somehow and beat her that way but who knows she might recruit dad there's nothing listen there's nothing scarier than a mom that wants
Starting point is 00:04:29 safety not nobody moves faster adam what do you think the over under is on amount of people steve gets upset at when he's driving oh man pizza show i mean the over under has got to be i'm and i say this like four and a half no without no with no joke i'm saying like 12 12 and a half 12 and a half gotta be you guys have never done the drive from ajax to stouffville which is no right i'm pretty sure the answer is going to be i'm gonna say i'm gonna put it at 0.5 oh oh everybody out there knows how to drive right steve no they're not gonna get i'm not gonna encounter anyone oh yeah it's true it is right there okay it's not that far the first bit getting out of like pickering or whatever you know lights green gas is on the right you piece of crap yeah after that
Starting point is 00:05:18 dag gum it dag gum yeah you don't have to take are you not taking the 401 or nothing uh i don't remember how to get there but it's it's rural it's rural taking like the roads around everything i'm taking whatever my phone tells me to take i have lost all sense of direction we're in the future um basically it's right north of um pickering uh that's where uh white church stoville area is and uh so you you get to you get to it's just north of the markham museum steve wow yeah just north of that where they keep historical markham thing i would think so they would have some exhibits i would expect at the markham museum they have steven samkos's markham waxer i hope they do actually they legitimately should he's a legitimate part
Starting point is 00:06:02 of their history yes um yeah so it's uh it's actually not that hard to get there um and and I would expect some WestEnders to make it. I know Steve will not go to the WestEnd, but WestEnders do often come to our EastEnd events because they find the drive to be much easier than the WestEnd because the WestEnd is difficult. Didn't someone come from Windsor last time we went to Stouffville? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Stouffville is awesome. Like the Stouffville Aurora area up there, it's great for everybody in the GTA to kind of like, oh, you just kind of leave the city, go up from the West or the East. It's an awesome location for these things. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:35 Oh, yeah. So we're going to have a good time tomorrow night. Game starts at 8. Steve will be streaming. We'll be having a good time. Woo! Be partying. Now, let's talk a little bit about the Four Nations face-off today.
Starting point is 00:06:47 I'm going to give you some rosters, just so you can be clear on it. Okay? We'll start with Finland. Sebastian Aho. Joel Armia. Alexander Barkov. Is that the first line? No, I'm just reading them out to you.
Starting point is 00:07:05 Oh, I was like, Joel Armia is on the first line. Oh, alphabetical order. I'm just giving you, yeah. Are you just listing the rosters? Yeah. Do you want me to list them? Oh, I'm just listing the lines. What are we supposed to do?
Starting point is 00:07:16 What are the lines? We'll let you read the rosters. All right, fine. I will give you the lines, all right? You ready? Fine. You know what my favorite part of every Leaf game is? Is when it's right at the beginning and they're like,
Starting point is 00:07:27 here's all the players playing tonight in alphabetical order. No one gives a shit. And we also know. I was just roll calling them. They announced the teams in December. I know that you know. Does everybody listening know? I think people who listen to the show probably know the general idea of the people on the team.
Starting point is 00:07:42 You're garbage, Adam. All right. Why don't you just tell me what roster you want? Okay, so line one for Finland. Barkov? That makes sense. Laine? Ooh.
Starting point is 00:07:58 You didn't say that makes sense. Nope. And Tevo Teravainen? so they got line a who is the most one-dimensional player in human history playing with the best two-way forward in hockey today and i would say table is a pretty good two-way winger too yeah i am surprised he's on their top line well let's have a look at their let's look at their second line yeah it's it's it's about chemistry right it's yeah yeah it's It makes a lot of sense when you look at the full line.
Starting point is 00:08:32 Arturi Lekkonen, Sebastian Ajo, and Moose, Miko Rantan. Well, Lekkonen with Rantan makes a lot of sense. Yeah. Ajo. Well, it's funny that Ajo is literally in Nathan McKinnon's spot after my little rant that I did besmirching him. So, third line, left wing, Granlin, center, Hintz, right wing, Capo Caco. Ooh.
Starting point is 00:08:55 Ooh. Okay. I like that line, actually. I like that line a lot. This, Finland, everyone's going to sleep on them. They're going to be so annoying to play against. They always are. And the fourth line, starting at left wing,
Starting point is 00:09:08 Edu Luster-Reinen, center, Anton Lindell, right wing, Joel Armia. That's a good little, Luster-Reinen is a pain in the ass. Luster-Reinen and Lindell, and I wouldn't be surprised. I don't think that line stays that way. Okay. Why? Well, Armia can play a good game.
Starting point is 00:09:34 We saw it. Game five against the Leafs, 2021. I hate my life. But I see Finland as being the team that tries to prevent you from scoring, right? They're going to try to metapod this thing. They're going to be very structure and coaching heavy. I would put probably someone else on the right there. Who's the shutdown line?
Starting point is 00:09:58 Who's the guy that's not currently dressed in the forward group? Because they have an extra forward. Who is it? Who is it? I don't know. Eric Holla. Ah! Who could work pretty well in that spot, I think.
Starting point is 00:10:09 I'd probably prefer Holla. I feel like Armia's having a bit of a better season. Mm-hmm. Huh. All right. That's a good forward group. Defensive pairs. The one thing I will throw out there about Team Finland
Starting point is 00:10:21 is that they have not practiced yet with a full roster. Right. So these lines aren't their true lines. because we have them for the rest of the teams, but these are the projected lines for Finland. Because they don't play until Thursday. Exactly. And I guess they practice today?
Starting point is 00:10:34 They'll probably practice today. Yesterday was optional skate. Only 11 guys hit the ice. Wow, lazy. I know, right? So in comparison to a team like Canada, when we read those lines out, they practice with full line combos.
Starting point is 00:10:46 We know who those lines are going to be. These are just projected lines, so who knows if Rantanen's going to be on the first line or line A or anything like that. Esa Lindell and Ole Mata are your top defense pair. Oh, my God. Really? Yusso Valimacki and Henry Yokiharu, your second pair.
Starting point is 00:11:03 Nico Mikula and Juro Vakalainen. Vakalainen. Vakalainen. Are your... Oh. Well, they had a couple injuries. No hock and paw. A couple?
Starting point is 00:11:15 Who was the other one that just went down? Heiskanen. Heiskanen. Which is the big one. Oh, dear. Oh, I don't like that at all. So, I feel like... That's not good, man.
Starting point is 00:11:25 This is a defense made up of Esa Lindell and a bunch of guys who are five, six guys in the NHL. And I think... And Matt Impalo. You're probably just going for damage limitation with this group. Who are the goalies? Well, we're going to get to that. You ready?
Starting point is 00:11:43 You see? Juicy. Oh, Saros, interesting. Who's had a bad season. He has. Is bad, actually, generally, just by the hockey. That's not true. Fraud.
Starting point is 00:11:52 It's crazy. You might say he's a fraud. He's heading to an international tournament as a goalie on one of the worst teams in the league this season. And the decor he's playing behind at this tournament is worse. Right. But you know who might steal some starts from him? Who? Kevin Lankanen.
Starting point is 00:12:08 Oh, my God. He should be the starter. He won't be, but he should be. He ought to be. He 1,000% should be. He's been absolutely unbelievable. Well, that's your Team Finland. uh now i uh as you mentioned uh on team finland you also have uh nicholas montepallo
Starting point is 00:12:25 montepallo from the ottawa senators i think he's not really i want to say the first time i read his name i i misspelled it in my head and i thought it was montepallo i thought he was an italian guy and then he gets named a team finland was he on your all italian team he should have Remember when you built that? Yeah, I sure did. All the Italian team was good. Ukopeka Lukonen is also on the roster, although given the seasons that everybody's had,
Starting point is 00:12:55 Yussi Saros, I think, gets dressed because he's Yussi Saros. Lankanen gets dressed because he's been the only thing scraping the Canucks to the playoffs right now. Lankanen should be the starter. Absolutely. I think you guys are underrating Nico Mikula. Where do they have him on their third pair? He's probably going to play a little higher than that.
Starting point is 00:13:10 There's somebody who's really important to the Panthers' Stanley Cup run last season. and he's playing on second line for the Panthers right now, I think he can probably move up in the lineup and be really important. Esa Lindell is going to be playing half an hour a night. Yeah. Decor is not the best in the tournament. It's probably four out of four, but it's still made up of pretty good studs.
Starting point is 00:13:27 What about Screw the Panthers, Jesse? Did you take that into consideration? I did not. You didn't? Yeah. Okay. All right. By the way, Steve and I are wearing our Four Nations face-off gear.
Starting point is 00:13:38 I do want to say that Steve's got his hockey jersey. Jesse, are you sure you're not going to bring out? You're not going to break out the Team USA jersey? Are you going to save it for the stream? No, because we're here right now. Oh, wow. It's downstairs. Take off your shirt!
Starting point is 00:13:51 They actually have these sweaters, which I really like. I like these sweaters. I'm into these. They're not over... Sometimes you get a sweater and the logo is the size of the chest, and you're like, that's a lot of logo. I don't need that much logo. The NHL has had, I think, a renaissance recently.
Starting point is 00:14:10 and like, I don't know if novelty jerseys is the right word, but like their stadium series stuff after years of the dark ages. Yes. Where they were all like almost across the board. And black and red. They were so bad. And black.
Starting point is 00:14:23 This jersey, this is the best Canada jersey they've had in a long time. There you go. For anything. Next team. Team Sweden. Who? On left wing, Philip Forsberg.
Starting point is 00:14:36 Center, Elias Pettersson. Right wing, Adrian Kempe. interesting that's different than what i read okay interesting because i thought i saw nylander on the left and i'm like you guys don't watch a lot of hockey do you well according to this uh nylander's on the right was zabin ajad and ricard raquel golly that's a good little line what was okay sorry do the top six again forsberg pedersen kempe raquel zabin ajad william nylander yeah and these are lines that they actually practice with yeah Unlike with Team Finland, we actually have real Sweden lines.
Starting point is 00:15:08 So these are probably what we're going to see on Wednesday. I also heard from Swedish and Finnish listeners, actually, on the last episode yesterday saying, hey, did you know Sweden and Finland are going to be able to speak their own language and hide from the Americans and the Canadians about what they're going to say? But they can't do it from each other because most Swedes speak a little Finnish and vice versa. I hadn't thought about that. Jesper Brat, Joel Eriksson-Eck, and Lucas Raymond are the third line. That's a pretty good line.
Starting point is 00:15:40 Pretty good. And then Victor Arvidsson, Elias Lindholm, and Gus Nyquist round out the top nine. Or top 12. Now, who am I leaving out of the Swedish forward group? I don't know. Leo Carlson. Oh, the kid. Leo Carlson.
Starting point is 00:16:00 That's the extra. I think he's better than potentially some of the guys there. Who was that fourth line again? Arvidsson, Lindholm, Nyquist. I put Leo Carlson in there. Arvidsson hasn't even had that great of a season. No, Arvidsson, he's been better than he was last year? I like that player.
Starting point is 00:16:15 Yeah, of course. Yeah, interesting. Well, the other weird thing with this tournament is, like, how do you, do you, the Olympics is kind of long. If you make it all the way to the end, it's long. And you're going to have to give one of your other goalies a start. You're going to want to use your extras in one or two of the games. Is there any room to even do that at the Four Nation faceoff? Only if somebody struggles.
Starting point is 00:16:44 Yeah. If somebody struggles, they're out, right? Now, on defense. I think it's fine not to play the 20-year-old who plays on the Ducks over the vet of Victor Arvidsson. I like Leo Carlson. What's Arvidsson at? In terms of points?
Starting point is 00:16:58 Yeah. 18 points in 40 games. Jesse. Jesse. What's little Carlson at? 19 points in 48 games. Oh, shit. Okay, well, tie goes to the vet.
Starting point is 00:17:08 More points. I think. One has more points than the other. The owner's then advocating. Sorry, I go for the more points. Playing the 20-year-old. Damn, that's disappointing. Okay, defense for Sweden is a definite highlight.
Starting point is 00:17:20 Okay. Hedman Brodine. Disgusting. Darlene Rasmus Anderson. Despicable. Ekholm Carlson. absolutely diabolical and that's without playing gus forsling somebody like they're gonna be switching guys out for sweden you can't tell me that i can
Starting point is 00:17:41 understand leo carlson maybe not playing uh if gus forsling goes the entire tournament doesn't play a game that's a crime uh so he was sick uh yesterday when they practiced so he's probably going to be in there in place of Darlene which I think is place of Darlene so it's how the lineup is going to go I was going to say if I had to take any guy out for him it'd be Darlene
Starting point is 00:18:03 which is crazy because Darlene makes I think 10 million dollars but Darlene that's the right call Forsling should be there on Wednesday I think he just has got a little bit of a cold yesterday but he should be out there okay our goaltending
Starting point is 00:18:19 I believe he still the nhl save percentage leader philip gustafson and if not doesn't matter because he's still been great spectacular season lena soulmark would be the backup and uh samuel arison from the philadelphia flyers bit of a fall off he's uh filling in for just like a game he's filling in for jake markstrom yeah yeah it would have been crazy if markstrom went the third goalie like never plays at these tournaments no like belfort and kujo i can remember belfort kujo did play oh yeah and then he got booted and that was that's why he left toronto later after that 2010 who won the gold medal as the third goalie 2010 luongo was the starter yep uh marc-andre flurry
Starting point is 00:19:05 was the backup marc-andre flurry was the third he was the third and he never played who was the backup broder who began as the starter and he stunk and he was not good yeah right okay i forgot I think there's a conversation to be had over who you're starting, Allmark or Gustafsson. I'm going to go with Gustafsson for game one. You think so? Versus Canada. And maybe you put Allmark in game two.
Starting point is 00:19:30 Who's their game two against? Is it Sweden or Finland? Yeah, because the next one is Canada-USA, right? So that would be Finland-Sweden, right? Because I have Finland-Sweden Saturday. That's when I'm streaming, right? Right. So I would put Allmark in on that.
Starting point is 00:19:43 But would you want to put your best foot forward against Canada? i would play both of them in the round robin for sure yeah canada's probably the worst at this like where they're like just they just lean into the vet and all mark is the more experienced guy there but every international program kind of does it to be honest i think they start with all mark me too yeah yeah because he's the one who's been hotter lately in terms of the like he came back from injury yeah he was killing decent for for for ottawa but um gustafson like after that hot start he's trailed back to a 915 which is still ridiculous he's he's a 915 and so is all mark on the entire season they're they're both in 915 so you got an argument there in terms of save
Starting point is 00:20:25 percentage and i guess you would argue too that the wild are a better team than the senator so maybe all marks 915 is a little more impressive all marks doing more with less i would say for sure so i don't know i think i think both of them deserve time here in the round robin moving on to Team USA. Okay. Guys, ready? On your first line, left wing,
Starting point is 00:20:44 Kyle Conner. Centerman, not Austin Matthews. But guy we're so glad is no longer playing at Buffalo because, boy, is he bad for Buffalo
Starting point is 00:20:53 and they should get rid of him. Jack Eichel, Stanley Cup winner. Right winger, Matthew Kachuk, Stanley Cup winner. Oh. Never had to go through
Starting point is 00:21:01 Buffalo to become one, though. No. So, Kyle Conner, Jack Eichel, Matthew Kachuk. Line one. No, no, it's cool, Sabres fans.
Starting point is 00:21:09 Tell me again how that was a great trade. Should that be a thing that we're talking about? It absolutely should be. It's going to be a thing every time until Sabres fans admit, sorry, the organization is against us. You're talking about the wrong thing. It wasn't what I was going to say. Oh, sorry.
Starting point is 00:21:25 Jeez. I said, should that be a thing we're talking about where Matthews isn't on the first line and Eichel is? And I'm going to say no. Okay. Let me tell you who he's paired with. Okay? Jake Gensel.
Starting point is 00:21:36 Let me finish my sentence. Oh, sorry. I thought it was the Jack Eichel thing. I made an asset of you and me because I assumed Gensel Matthews Hughes I feel like that line has a purpose and so does the first one
Starting point is 00:21:50 but that line has got less of a mean guy purpose and more of a just Gensel Matthews Hughes that is a crazy goal scoring line no no you know what the purpose of the first line is score you know what the purpose of the second line is
Starting point is 00:22:05 score here go ahead and give me the third line boldy jt miller brady kachuk score but also get a little mad uh get a little mad get a little angry score while they're it would be cool to see brady switch over to the left side and play with matthew at some point too i do hope they get to play lines together and on the fourth line uh my favorite brock nelson on left wing they don't even have him at center vinny trocek at center dylan larkin at right wing score like they are scary we were talking about uh finland a little bit like all right so what's what's the purpose here because you gotta nail everything what no no um you have to play up to the u.s that they left
Starting point is 00:22:51 cole caulfield off that team yeah and they're still the best goal scoring team in the tournament would you if i proposed you connor matthews hughes gensel eichel kachuk would you rather play that as your top what's the second line so right now it's connor eichel kachuk i'm proposing connor matthews hughes and then the second line would have been uh gensel eichel kachuk is there enough puck to go around yeah i'm swapping genzel and connor no i like the top line because oh okay give me give it to me again the true the real one that they're the real one they're going with kyle connor jack eichel matthew kachuk so kachuk is more of a playmaker i mean everyone at this tournament is good everyone can score everybody
Starting point is 00:23:41 can do everything yes so i i think kachuk is more of a playmaker eichel while having a reputation as a goal scorer i think is much more of an all-around player and that includes defensively um and then kyle connor is your sniper i don't think you should be putting connor and matthews together unless it's on the power play um because there's only one puck okay but i look at i look at genzel as kind of similar to matthews he's a playmaker wait matthew or matthews matthew well that's gonna screw me up during this tournament i don't know I like the idea of loading up the scores where you throw Matthews and Connor on the same line.
Starting point is 00:24:24 So the second line is Gensel, Matthews, Hughes. Hughes is the playmaker. Matthews is the goal scorer. Matthews can do everything. He can do everything, but he has more than once had more goals than assists. I think he probably does this year too. A whole reason of switching Gensel and Connor,
Starting point is 00:24:43 I think if Kyle Connor and Austin Matthews are on the same line, there's no way they're on the ice they don't score do you hear how ludicrous this conversation is they're so good yeah like i feel i feel like that's you get to a point where it's unstoppable uh and i yeah i think one of the best ways to build a hockey team is just load up on your strengths so pile the goal the like some of the two best goal scorers in the league on the same line here's the advantage every team but the states has in this tournament it's only a maximum of four games the longer this tournament
Starting point is 00:25:14 goes the more true it is to who is the best and the states win i think every time um in one game sample sizes you get the outliers yeah finland can win and it wouldn't even be weird yeah because it's one game yeah and they're like and these teams have not played together and you know if it's an 82 game series season though uh tbsa looks pretty good stuff yeah like how much time do you even have for like getting out the blender like none pretty much well your exit your exist in the blender the blender is how you were made it's whoa you know damn that's what it is because these are new people you've been reading some deep shit yeah that was really good uh one thing that's interesting about the usa lineup sorry there's a lot of little things there uh they
Starting point is 00:25:58 don't they only have two right-handed forwards oh the whole thing the whole thing there's only two righties well eichel wait have we even read their whole lineup probably means they sucked forwards. No, we have not. Right-handed forwards. We have not got to their right-handed forwards. Oh my god. Okay. What's line three? The D pair. I did get to line three. Kreider's the extra.
Starting point is 00:26:23 I was just going to get to... You guys should play nice. Okay, listen to you. Listen to you both. I'm trying to do this a specific way. I wanted to see if you guys could guess if Kreider was the outlier. The guy sitting on the outside. I know who the scratches are. Okay. I want to get Steve to guess.
Starting point is 00:26:39 Just give me the whole forward group again. Okay. Forward group again. Connor, Eichel, Kachuk. Yep. Gensel, Matthews, Hughes. Yep. Boldy, Miller, Kachuk.
Starting point is 00:26:48 Oh, right. B. Kachuk, that is. Right. Nelson, Trochek, Larkin, and then Kreider, Spare. You did say that. Oh. Okay, on defense. Okay.
Starting point is 00:26:56 Wow. Slavin, Fox. Okay. Rowenski, McAvoy. God. Hannafin, Faber. Ooh. Who have I left off?
Starting point is 00:27:09 Sanderson. That's right. I don't think that'll remain. No, he's probably going to play. And then in goal, Connor Hellebuck and Jake Ottinger look to be the two goals. And Jeremy Swayman is the third guy. But he may not play. He won't play.
Starting point is 00:27:25 He almost for certain won't play. Do you realize you would have to play a different goalie like every game? Yeah. In order to get all three in. And how are you not playing Hellebuck and Ottinger at least once each? because hellebuck is hellebuck and you should play him a lot he's connor hellebuck holy shit it's a good team man so anyway they're the favorite uh and then team canada we've talked a lot about the team canada goaltending situation i will leave that to last line one for team canada
Starting point is 00:27:57 looks to be reinhardt mcdavid marner completely stupendous outrageous yes uh line two an interesting one stone crosby mckinnon how do you like mark stone alongside sydney crosby and nathan mckinnon guys that line is going to win every puck battle in the universe what a miserable terrible time they have mcdavid is their first line center crosby is their second line center and McKinnon, they're making play on the wing. This is what's happening. So if Canada does win, that's why. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:42 That top six. Holy shit. Crazy. It's still pretty good on the third line. Oh, yeah. By the way, Jesse, Drew was complaining about Mark Stone with Crosby and McKinnon. What do you think? Mark Stone with Crosby.
Starting point is 00:28:54 What is the complaint? He said he wasn't sure about Mark Stone being there with them. I don't know why. I mean, I could see Brandon Hagel moving up. He's lower down in the lineup, but Mark Stone's still Mark Stone, right? Takeaway God. I don't understand. Is his argument that Mark Stone's not good?
Starting point is 00:29:11 Because that's not true. No, I don't understand it. I don't understand it. I'd like to hear from him on that. Marshan Point, Seth Jarvis as your third line. What do we expect? What's that identity? I think this team might take some penalties.
Starting point is 00:29:25 uh yeah yeah i think friday especially with uh well even finland's gonna try to drag you into the muck this might be a chipper tournament uh that i think people are prepared for okay yeah and then fourth line hagel sorelli sam bennett they'll take some penalties yeah that line is better than the third one you think that's a better line here give me give me the that again so uh hagel sorelli sam bennett and sam bennett's been on a he's been pretty cold yeah yep but but they're going to have him in the role of murderer. Who am I leaving off? Who are you leaving off?
Starting point is 00:30:06 I don't know. Flyer. Connect me? Yeah, right now. He might still fly out. Oh, man, the way he's played this season. Oh, Jesus. The way the both of them have played this season,
Starting point is 00:30:19 I would have Connection over Bennett. I would, too. Oh, shit. And then you have Sorelli. sorelli hagel hagel connect me oh what a just a line of shitheads yeah right oh my god yeah no that's a very very very good forward group uh the first defense pair is colorado's first defense fair davante's kill my car built-in advantage uh the second one is morrissey pareko that's pretty good i like that i like that third one is shea theodore drew dowdy it was going to be shea
Starting point is 00:30:52 theodore alex petrangelo but yeah it's a shame that you know again petro doesn't like canada i get it yeah doesn't care about his country hates that sort of thing wants it to be a state yeah i understand um no i thought uh i don't mean that i i thought that would be such an advantage for canada that two of their pairs were like actual nhl pairs but in terms of guys to replace the style of player that alex petrangelo is like you could do worse than drew daddy jesse any thoughts on those defense pairings do you how do you think they stack up against the u.s uh i think it's the best one in the tourney i'm trying to think of the usa one again because usa is probably better offensively and i think this one is better defense with morrissey and mccarr you can still
Starting point is 00:31:38 say usa is better offensively oh yeah you think so yeah okay like just threw out because fox has had up and down year he's probably going to score more goals at this tournament than he has all season yes but um i would say us has a better offensive decor canada has a better shutdown decor who i think i i don't think you're getting past canada's d a whole lot and with the with usa missing quinn hughes means a lot like i feel like yeah like we're we're still thinking like he would be a part of that with the offensive rating but i think they do they they do edge them still slightly offensively but i think i think you got to rate canada's decor as the best because defense is what they're there to play for you get the offense from the forward group so i
Starting point is 00:32:22 don't feel like the offensive abilities of the defense for the usa will come into play a whole bunch because you have uh you have matthews and gensel and eichel and all the forwards to score so i feel like canada's d should be better in this short-term tournament yeah you don't have devon taves and colton pareko there because you know you need offense exactly because you don't need offense because you have all the stars up front uh and mccarr who's the guy on the outside looking in right now uh travis anheim what do you think about that you think he plays that makes sense uh maybe a game yeah okay now a goalie and this is where it gets a little bit weird it has to be aiden hill aiden hill who do you have as the second goalie who would who would
Starting point is 00:33:07 you have as the second goalie guys who's a jordan binnington and sam montable good god i who cares bennington i guess it is bennington yuck nah man nah nah dude it's so crazy who they we spent all season being like oh no canada's goaltending sucks and it's just turned into oh no they just picked the wrong ones yeah Kemper's been very, very good. Logan Thompson's been very, very good. The Joey Decord situation is unlike any I've seen before where he could play for like three teams
Starting point is 00:33:51 and he's playing for none. It has to be Aiden Hill. All right, here's some trivia for you guys. Sam Montembeau and Jordan Binnington. Who has, of the two of them, the better save percentage? Oh, man. They've both played about 40 games. Bitter?
Starting point is 00:34:11 Jesse, thoughts? Montembeau's played 40 games. Actually, I think he's played more. I will... Before Jakob Dobos showed up, they had no one. Yeah, yeah. I'll guess Montembeau,
Starting point is 00:34:21 just to be different. It's a trick question. They're the same. Is it good, though? 8.97. Oh, no. Which isn't... Listen, you said it on yesterday's show.
Starting point is 00:34:30 Somebody had a less than 9 save percentage, and you're like, it's not... Jeremy Swayman, I think. Yeah, it's not like the disaster it used to be. Yeah. But it's not great. And by the way, Montemayor has played 42 times. Bennington has played 39.
Starting point is 00:34:45 Wow. Gulp? Honestly, I don't think there's a ton between the states and Canada. Goaltending. Until you get there. Yeah. When you get there, it's like, oh, shit. All right, well, they got a pretty clear advantage.
Starting point is 00:35:04 the only thing Canada has going for them is Hellebuck in like playoff games in recent memory has not been very good right like he's done it before so I think they'll be fine I'm wondering guys because CJ has said on
Starting point is 00:35:21 the on the CJ show Canada won games at the last Olympics which was a long time ago by just being kind of boring it was it was prying Mike Babcock hockey those games were not fun no they were that gold medal game sucked so did the
Starting point is 00:35:35 so did the World Cup gold medal game against Team Europe terrible the gold medal game was against Sweden oh it was? who was without
Starting point is 00:35:44 Nick Backstrom oh you mean in Sochi in Sochi yeah yeah sorry but no one remembers it because
Starting point is 00:35:50 everyone's like well if anyone's going to beat him it's USA and Canada shut them out it was only 2-0 but they shut them out
Starting point is 00:35:58 and Carey Price if I remember correct didn't have to work particularly hard right so and now he's not coming through the door it's Aiden Hill I like Aiden Hill I just hope Aiden Hill doesn't get injured or something I like Aiden Hill come on what's wrong with Aiden Hill
Starting point is 00:36:16 Biddington was so very not good at the world championships yeah by the way Aiden Hill's percentage is uh a 900 even no listen you won a cup in very recent memory so hopefully that's the goalie who shows up right right okay and if he does you have a chance to win sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to rappel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and they're way around on that it's like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want
Starting point is 00:37:02 i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper thing and the and the washer thing chemicals you gotta have the right chemicals see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and And I employed a Tasker. Here's the thing. TaskRabbit connects you with Taskers in your area for furniture assembly, home repairs, lawn maintenance, mounting, window cleaning, all that stuff. Starting point is 00:37:52 Now, style of play. And I just sort of mentioned it for Canada. It seems like their style of play is going to be a little bit more tighter hockey. I mean, they have high-flying players. It's a bit of a throwback. like the the construction of this roster to me is way more what i'm used to from canada but minus in net um but it's a team that will grind you down and beat the hell out of you but the primary focus is we're just extremely good hockey players and we're gonna score a shitload
Starting point is 00:38:25 of goals and they're gonna be dirty and they're gonna be gritty and if you try to drag us into the muck we will bury you in it um that's that's what it looks like so if you're the coach if you're mike sullivan of team usa what is your team identity we know what team canada's is and i'm going to go through all of these guys what do you say team usa's identity will be uh just shock and awe just speed and scoring ability like that's maybe the one thing you can be an unk about with this team is you're like listen it depending on what kind of tournament this is depending on what kind of rule book there is there's a rule book where the states wins every game five two yep and there's a rule book where they might actually have a hard time scoring goals
Starting point is 00:39:19 um but like i mean eichel can snipe on you or he can bang it in matthews can snipe on you or he can banging in um most of those guys are pretty capable it's you're really really nitpicking with all of these rosters because they're so disgusting they're really good jesse anything to add on team usa or should i move on to another team uh yeah i don't think team usa is gonna have any trouble scoring and i don't think they'll have any trouble mucking it up either they have brady and matthew kachuk and i think you think you read that third line out wrong kachuk's a left winger he'll be on that on that left wing and we might get that kachuk uh matthew line like it might be a lot of fun and i i feel like they can bully anybody uh anybody in this tournament
Starting point is 00:40:09 and i think they're the clear favorites because they have everything and there's no holes like you point to you point to the holes in canada and gold like in in this short sample size where we have these teams who are all-star teams one of them doesn't have any flaws the team usa i can you are right about the kachuk being on the left side yeah uh the side i was looking at was incorrect so the site i'm now looking at is the correct one because i think michael russo had the lines from practice yep and it was kachuk miller boldy don't be totally shocked if they play matthews with both kachuks i'm calling it right now i'd love that i'm calling it right now they're going to try it because so many times during his career like the conversation has always been oh
Starting point is 00:40:50 matthews marner does it work does it not if you go and look at any time they've taken matthews away from marner if it's not kneelander they're putting them with two banging crashers so i could easily see it being both kachuks i like that hughes kind of gives off like i could do mitch marner stuff in replace of marner you know so 100 that's i think that's kind of why they're together right now messaging each other hey you want to do some mitch stuff yeah yeah i'll do some mitch stuff uh all right let's talk about sweden's identity what is sweden's identity to me it stands out as finesse with a little bit of grit at the bottom end and i'm thinking about lynn holman arvidsson i would say finesse and discipline discipline like not going to take a
Starting point is 00:41:32 lot of penalties discipline um discipline like um we're going to shut you down in a way where we don't have to beat the hell out of you that's never really been what we've done um we're just going to be able to take the puck off you and we're going to move it their their identity i think is just moving the thing their that back end is absurd right so i mean if you're a forward your job is have the have your stick on the ice basically jesse thoughts yeah we're i think we're underrating the effect that the swedish d will have on this tournament like it's it's so impressive that they got they got carlson there on the third pairing you know you got headman up front and they're gonna they're gonna have an impact on this tournament um in a way where they
Starting point is 00:42:19 could steal a couple games because people are surprised by like the offense they'll get from the back end and the defense so it's a bunch of two-way guys who can really who can i think really control the play and they'll get some scoring from from the big guns like nylander so i think they can easily sneak a couple games here there's there's also like we got to get out of our regular season minds for this tournament like we're looking at lines one two and three and four and i think it's just purpose purpose purpose purpose yeah that's what it's all about so like ekholm carlson is the quote-unquote third pair it could easily be the first it doesn't matter i mean carlson is getting up there but you look at the uh shutdown guys he's played with throughout his
Starting point is 00:43:04 career and you know the guy he probably had the most success with in that regard was Mark Mathot and you're giving him Matthias Ekholm holy shit yeah you know um I could like if you're if you're Sweden you need a goal late there's you know but it's too early to pull your goalie let's say it's like eight minutes who are you giving the ice time to like what what are the pairs oh in terms of defense yeah i assume you want carlson out there to shoot for offense i mean and then you throw headman all right you're not you're not gonna you're not gonna sit headman in a high pressure situation right so and carlson plays the right headman plays left so you throw headman carlson out there good like that's that's as good as anybody in the tournament
Starting point is 00:43:50 good god sweden i feel like is one of those countries and this is something canada has struggled with in recent years like you imagine a Canadian hockey player I think you pictured a certain prototype you pictured Jonathan Taves um Crosby's a bit of unicorn so you probably picture a Ryan Getzlaff um a Jerome McGinley guys who are big and mean but they can do everything and i think canada's sort of gotten away from that they just sort of have all these guys who have different attributes or whatever team sweden they make team sweden players that is who comes out of that country what's that player what is that type of player well i think they're primarily defensemen like things things ebb and flow with sure what guys
Starting point is 00:44:51 can do i mean that i think i think they'll take this as a as a compliment and not um an insult the fins make assholes right we'll get to that the finnish hockey program creates assholes the swedish hockey program creates puck moving defensemen who now they've got this hybrid of guys who instead of watching Nicholas Lidstrom for a generation they've been watching Victor Hedman so they're a little meaner does that make sense? It does make sense
Starting point is 00:45:26 where you're going to struggle with Sweden is down the middle I think you're watching like a team like Canada who can throw McKinnon on the wing because they have such an abundance of high end centers who are the best in the world and you see Sweden you're like okay they got Lindholm out there on the fourth line
Starting point is 00:45:42 and we know how much Lindholm has struggled this season and zabinijad too hasn't had the great year and he's their second line center so i think down the middle in the forward group is somewhere where teams like usa and canada will take advantage of them you're also seeing teams uh taking advantage of sweden's one of the only teams where i think they've been able to take advantage of adding someone to their roster late because like i should elise lindholm be on that team i don't know but they've william carlson went down so they added Ricard Raquel is Raquel the extra no yeah he on the fourth line no probably should have been there he's on the second line yeah that's low-key we should have all been rooting
Starting point is 00:46:22 for I don't want to pick anybody but one of the Canada forwards to go down because Mark Scheifele should be on this team he is third in the league in goals right now only Dreisaitl and Nylander are above him he's having one of the best seasons of his career is a top 10 forward in this league right now and they didn't pick him in december so mark scheifele should be on this team and sweden did benefit by having the ability to pick an extra and canada didn't get that benefit ricard raquel already has 25 goals yeah like what do you mean he wasn't he should have been there like yeah get out of here you have 48 and it's the same thing with the goalies with canada you wish a goalie went down like we don't want injuries but it would have been nice to have
Starting point is 00:47:03 one of the top goalies this season on team canada i think there were definitely a lot of phone calls and uh i i just i imagine this scenario where you know uh crosby is like uh yeah i don't know these guys haven't really been or no crosby's a terrible example because he was hurt like chris crider's like yeah i got like 20 phone calls in the past week asking how i was feeling yeah they're like how was that was your wrist yeah how you doing buddy for the last time it's fine i'm fine stop asking wow these guys really want me there what that's what what is team finland's identity assholes that's what they're there for so they're they're gonna be a pain in the ass yeah well are they gonna run you over offensively like some can but sure but like are
Starting point is 00:47:57 they going to run you over offensively like the states can no like okay what's their top line their top line this is a different site so it's a different top line but i had it aho barkov line a originally it could be aho barkov ranting and because we don't have the line we don't know what the lines okay better question who's their best forward barkov sasha barkov he's pretty good so to me that's got to be the identity of their forward group right like with the states you go okay so you're offensive killers yeah canada okay you're offensive killers with finland i think you need to win games like a boa constrictor and just strangle the shit out of all your opponents and win with the most god-awful miserable hockey to watch any of us have ever seen i want you to make
Starting point is 00:48:49 gary betman regret ever putting this tournament on that's the only way you're gonna win you're not gonna win by running everyone over you know you're not gonna win by shooting the lights out um you're gonna need some saves yep um and you'll get them and you're gonna have to insulate that decor let's let's be honest like it is miles and miles away the weakest at the tournament it's every bit as weak as a decor as canada's goaltending is as as a as a random and i just think it's way easier for like aiden hill jordan binnington and sam montembeau have all played nhl games for a long time finland doesn't have that with with everyone right um or you know they don't have guys who have consistently matched up against this caliber of opponent you could be matching up
Starting point is 00:49:48 against the fourth line of any of these teams any given night and it'll probably be the best you've ever gone against whereas you know some of the other guys it's not necessarily true like they they've been there before so finland is going to have to play extraordinarily disciplined who's their head coach uh finland they have to do an unreal job i was gonna bring that up yeah because the nhl preached about how this is an nhl tournament featuring the four nations right and everybody's got to be an nhl player and that's how we're building this thing the head coach of finland is just their like international hockey head coach yeah um i think i i can picture him i don't know his name his last i'm gonna i don't speak finnish i'm gonna butcher his last name i
Starting point is 00:50:32 I don't know how to say it in Finnish, but it's Pananen, I believe, is his last name. Pananen? Yeah, so Pananen or however you say it in Finnish. I'm sorry. But he's just their international head coach. So we're allowed to bend the rules? Well, I don't think they had any NHL coaches, right? We're bending the rules less than we did in the World Cup, where we had two non-countries.
Starting point is 00:50:53 So couldn't we do more fun things? No, it's the NHL. They pick two or three fun things. okay overtime's longer sweden and finland all right twist our arm you guys get coaches because the whole idea about leaving out czechia who is the current world champions out of this tournament is we'd have to fill it with international players you're filling the head coach slots with international coaches why don't we put czechia why don't we put german germany in there i why is that a problem like i don't okay here's something that could be good
Starting point is 00:51:27 for the nhl you do put czechia in there they do have to ice a bunch of international players yeah and russia too yeah no no no i'm picking on a country like czechia or slovakia who are they invading that well no i mean your net oh hey hey there you go there's steve breaking the tension uh like if you allow these guys to bring guys from like the slovak league in the czech league you know what could be good for the nhl is if a team that is completely rostered with nhl players runs them the fuck over like i don't understand why the nhl doesn't want that well because i guess you might lose right yeah you might lose but i think uh it could be pretty good yeah but then we're just at like hey this is just like the olympics you might lose like
Starting point is 00:52:21 throw latvia in there and get a latvian goalie who stands on their head and beats canada that's It's so fun. Yeah. Latvia is always fun. Sweden's doing the same thing, by the way. They just have their international head coach, Sam Halam, who coaches like all the Swedish international or world championship and all that stuff.
Starting point is 00:52:37 So we bended the rules for international coaches. We could have done all these other countries and thrown them in there too. Like Czechia should be there. They won most recently out of any international body. You know what I think is funny too, is that the NHL insists on having coaches of that team's national identity,
Starting point is 00:52:54 whereas other other teams that play national sports uh international tournaments yeah doesn't matter where the coach is from canada has regularly hired scottish coaches like soccer canada soccer canada yeah i mean they're gone now bev priestman and uh who's the other guy that was the tfc coach who had to resign very quietly after the drone scandal john herman john herdman who was like the most popular man in canada for a bit and then everybody's like ah the drones yeah oh no nick nurse is he's definitely from mississauga right exactly right this is my point like i don't understand why you'd need it to have that like i get team canada the united states whatever they're going to go with their own people they have enough right but like why can't finland and sweden have
Starting point is 00:53:31 the best coach available right it have to be like maybe these guys that maybe these guys believe that they are and and i should hope so but like if i don't know who's who's a great coach what if uh finland was like hey we got a real carolina hurricanes ass team here why can't we have rod right he's perfect for spinland right palmer is on the on he's canadian right yeah yeah is he on the canadian staff uh that's a good question i'm not just giving him barkov's team that is taxed with playing like complete assholes would be amazing yeah uh okay bruce cassidy pete deborah rick tocket misha donskov uh are the coaches and uh yeah bruce cassidy pete deborah rick tocket those are the and john cooper's the head coach so no paul maurice no paul maurice at all i if if
Starting point is 00:54:26 this is an nhl thing and like it's only nhl guys sweden should be able to hire paul maurice that That would be hilarious. That would be pretty cool. Here we got Etu Lustereinen and Anton Lundell. Jim Hiller. And Brad Lambert also makes the team. And Brad Lambert. Who is legitimately Finnish.
Starting point is 00:54:52 Change your name. Paul Marissinen. It's nothing against the coaches that they have. I think they're going to do well. I think it's cool that they allowed this. Get exposure. These coaches have familiarity with this governing body. They clearly work for the Swedish international hockey body.
Starting point is 00:55:10 So it's cool that they're allowed to do this tournament here. But if we bended the rules in that way, I think they could have done more with the tournament overall in terms of bending the rules. Yes. I don't know. Little thing. There's a lot of little things with the tournament.
Starting point is 00:55:23 Not Yussi Okunin. Sorry, Oli Okunin, who wants to be an NHL coach one day. He's coaching right now. Oh, that's interesting. Yeah, but he's like... I don't care. He's just coming up the rung here. Yeah, well, there was a video that went viral recently
Starting point is 00:55:33 of him swearing, and that's enough for me to believe he's good to be an NHL coach. All right, now, pretty obvious, guys, that Team Finland has the lowest cap hit of any team at this tournament. They might be cap compliant. Can you guess what their cap hit is, Jesse and Steve? We're going to go through cap hits.
Starting point is 00:55:51 Oh. 97. 97 million. Wow. That's as much as Tampa had when they won the Cup. That would be over the cap. that would be over the cap yeah now well i said it mostly joking you'll be blown i don't think they're actually cap compliant you'll be blown away there is no cap for this tournament well
Starting point is 00:56:07 yeah you know just like there shouldn't be for the playoffs so you can get as many stars into the playoffs as possible but no anyway jesse go ahead what do you think i'll say they are cap compliant and they're at 86 million uh they are not 121.9 holy shit so that gives you an idea of where we're going here okay uh-huh all right now the next highest cap or sorry that i guess the third third team in terms of cap finland not finland sweden the others the other finland i'm oh how dare you how dare you i'm joking get the camera off me put it on him joking how much money does sweden's combined roster cost i'm gonna say 140 okay that's a big jump steve from 97 130 130 162.7 million dollars all right now who will be here's the next question
Starting point is 00:57:04 who's got the highest cap hit in the tournament is it canada or the united states i think it's the u.s okay jesse i'm trying to think um i'll go with canada it is the united states so we'll go with canada first 175 175 million dollars jesse 200 182 million shoo and the u.s 200 okay jesse 201 u.s is 185 million three million dollar difference between those two rosters i won yeah yeah yeah i went over but still and steve yeah yay uh so listen i i think that was i think it's gonna be fun i do miss teams like in an international tournament um be like i remember one of the first olympics we ever got to talk about on this show we went through the team austria uh and tried to pronounce all the austrian names and it was hilarious we
Starting point is 00:58:08 didn't do good so much fun no we don't get that this time no but gentlemen how excited scale of one to ten are you about a international tournament i understand it's limited how excited are you it's growing it's big time growing um so it's a grower not a show are you it's that is how i would describe this tournament absolutely um they haven't played a game yet i i still think the promotion behind this tournament has not been hasn't been good you don't like those sports net promos
Starting point is 00:58:45 I just feel like no one's really talking about this tournament and I think there's also that might be some Canadian bias where people are just dreading it because Canada's done pretty shit like in men's hockey recently and also all we've really
Starting point is 00:59:02 heard with Team Canada for the last few months is they don't have a goalie right But now, all of a sudden, yesterday, the tide began to turn because it's like, McKinnon's on the wing. McKinnon's playing on the wing of Crosby and Stone. McDavid is with Marner and Reinhardt, right? Stuff like that. Now that the rosters are finalized, I'm very interested to see.
Starting point is 00:59:32 I think just seeing them on the ice together, even. You're like, oh, yeah. Yeah, and, like, I'd be remiss to say, like, the 72 Summit Series was not necessarily as big a deal as it was because of the quality of hockey. People weren't like, holy shit, can't wait to see what Esposito does to Harlamov or whatever. it was extremely political and it was one world versus another one system versus another yes a way of life versus another this current climate that we're in isn't quite that but would you say it's charged it's charged it's been uncomfortable you might even say tariffed Yeah, whoa, hey, hey, oh, Adam.
Starting point is 01:00:32 Charged, extra money. That's a very taxing term. Ha ha, wow. Wait, no. No borders, Steve. Like, listen, Friday is going to be Canada-USA in Montreal. And another huge thing with this tournament, and it could be Canada-US,
Starting point is 01:00:50 and I think that's probably what Bettman wants, but the way the tournament is designed, whatever the gold medal matchup is i'm just going to correct you uh there are no games friday it's saturday oh sorry saturday double game double header saturday oh i thought it was probably my bad um whatever the gold medal matchup is will be a rematch and that rules extraordinarily wait a second how explain because everybody plays each other in the round robin oh because they didn't They come from different divisions. I get it.
Starting point is 01:01:25 I get it. Okay. No matter what, the gold medal matchup will be a rematch. So out of 10, what's your excitement level? Last week, I'd put it at a four. This week. What's so funny, Matty? What is it, Matty?
Starting point is 01:01:39 Is it because I'm answering a question I wasn't asked? What is it, Matty? Is it going to be that Steve's taking four hours to answer a very simple question that Adam now has to ask twice? See, this is how you get Steve to answer a question. You ask it, you let him answer, and then you ask him it again and get the real answer. He did this yesterday where he gave two answers to the same question. I can't remember what it was. One was like a 10-minute answer, and then the other one was like a 3-minute answer.
Starting point is 01:02:08 Steve, we love you. Please never change. I'm laughing because I love you. So what's your out of 10? How many hockey helmets out of 10 hockey helmets are you giving him? I don't know if I feel like it. No, you got to tell me. I don't know if I want to.
Starting point is 01:02:20 no you were starting with two weeks ago you had a answer and then now you have an answer last week it was four but it has grown i'm talking i'm trying to paint a fucking picture about how my excitement has grown to double it is an eight jesse i think yeah oh fuck i don't care i think the difference between that that response and the one we gave you was we allowed you to talk yeah first oh yeah for a gracious three seconds i go last week it was a four oh fuck you think the soliloquy before that was three the soliloquy you think that was three sentence that's literally a fucking sentence that's the add showing four score it is 12 years ago we should bring up the uh the trophy as well chris johnson tweeted this out i was like that's
Starting point is 01:03:15 not what he asked that is cool i was gonna shit about the trophy i was gonna ask what it was called is it just the four they don't have it they don't have a name for it oh is what they should have named it after somebody like here's the gretzky four nations or here's the lemieux four nations or i think it's it's literally the one time it'll ever be handed out i don't know if we need a name you know what name it after a billionaire jeremy jacobs coordination i thought it was also interesting that they are gonna get gold medals uh oh that's cool that's a part of with the champions i don't know i guess because international tournament you want to go with that how do you guys feel about gold medals i'm happy with that yeah why not every player should get
Starting point is 01:03:52 something to take home yeah you know what i mean it's not like everyone gets to take i like that a lot i like that a lot i medals are good there's the world juniors has a trophy and also gold medals yes um so i was thinking about this the other day like okay so there's this trophy and it's a tournament and it's never gonna happen again and if it's never gonna happen again why are we even doing it i'm not old enough to know the answer to this how many canada cups were there i think there's three we can google that 87 96 and there was another one in there too 87 and 96 yeah they were weird no i think that was a world cup canada cup 87 no 87 yeah 96, I think it was a World Cup.
Starting point is 01:04:33 Oh, okay. That was the one... No, there's an 83 with Gretzky and Bossy. It's where Gretzky had a perm in 83. We don't need to guess. The internet exists. They hosted the Canada Cup in 76, 81, 84, 87, and 91. Oh, there you go.
Starting point is 01:04:50 Those are the Canada Cups. Canada won everyone except the 81 Canada Cup where they lost to the Soviet Union. Canada lost in the finals there. Canada better win the damn Canada Cup. yeah so there you go they only hosted five of them huh cool that's more than this i don't know it's special yeah i what what i was gonna say about my excitement level uh i think it's about the same like eight yeah i think that makes a lot of sense because this is so much better than the
Starting point is 01:05:17 all-star break um the all-star break is great for when it's in your city we all loved when the all-star game was here but watching the all-star game even when it was here was the travesty yeah it's a disrespect to competitive hockey it's not what it is at all the skills competition has like fallen by the wayside a lot because even we'll get performances like kucherov and like they're trying out there for the skills competition because it's not hard to try in a skills competition but it's not it's not hockey it's not that exciting unless you're kind of there um so i like this so much better than all-star break so it's got to get some points for that you know what's different about this and the all-star break is uh they're gonna try yeah i think which i think is really
Starting point is 01:05:53 key we're gonna see some real efforts because they're like hey i'm going up against the best of the best i want to win this game there's something to play for and it's bragging rights and it's interesting i'm a 10 out of 10 but i've been a 10 out of 10 i know you are since i just generally a 10 out of 10 daddy uh no but i'm very excited about this and i've been excited since they mentioned it because when it was first announced i was like hell yeah international play this is what i wanted and you know last year and the year before we talked a lot about in-season tournaments that the nba were doing the nba has the nba cup in november or something like that where they paint all the floors
Starting point is 01:06:25 different colors? The Emirates NBA Cup. I don't know if it's any good, but kudos for trying it. Yeah, and I think they've gone out of their way to brand it, whatever. It's going to take a while
Starting point is 01:06:35 before that means something. But I think anytime you can put on a jersey of your country, it is going to mean something. Because we all grew up playing road hockey or that sort of thing,
Starting point is 01:06:47 and wearing our country's jersey and wishing it could be us. And a lot of these guys came through the systems. uh you know usa hockey system you know hockey canada sweden finland have their own organizations and they're probably got a lot of vowels and stuff in there that i can't pronounce but you know all of these guys have played international hockey before remember how important it was and the great thing is is we have the olympics 12 months away that this is a warm-up for a lot of them have
Starting point is 01:07:14 won gold what i've heard level i've heard yeah a lot of them have they're all winners uh everybody wins yeah uh no but i've heard a lot of bullshit commentary on this uh about oh well there's a lot of guys like let's just sometimes crummy takes you're like this is a crummy take this take sucks uh where it's like yeah once petrangelo pulled out people were like yeah there it goes he's gonna start floodgates are open nobody's gonna want to be there and i'm like okay so you guys just don't ask any questions of anybody inside the game fair enough you ask anybody inside the game these players have been jacked for this tournament the whole time who far isn't far be it for me who isn't who to who is it name them give me a sec it's not in my nature to stand up
Starting point is 01:08:03 for rogers but those takes weren't coming from the guys who are airing the games i agree they were not and it's listen i'm just throwing that out it's been online too people are like well it's not real a real tournament if russia's not there well tell russia to stop invading other countries and they can come back the double ihf said the same thing luke luke tardy the other day was like listen we can't wait for russia russia and belarus to come back uh the whole thing that situation's gonna have to stop we um and so we don't have time actually no no like like adults are talking we don't have time to explain why russia's not there every fucking time yeah enough yeah okay grown-ups are talking you're dragging us all down we don't have time dad no no like
Starting point is 01:08:47 I'm just so tired of this thinly veiled nonsense. I agree with you completely. Fuck off. And I think that there were people waiting for this tournament to fail. They were wanting this tournament to fail because they're like, what's the difference? All-star games just like this, whatever. Guys, I think we're going to see some great hockey.
Starting point is 01:09:08 And I'm so excited. I'm so excited for what players come back with. because somebody's going to have a – like somebody's going to be TJ Sochi. Somebody's going to have a crazy tournament, and they're going to come back, and they're going to be on fire all the way to the playoffs and through them. I'm so jacked for what a guy like Mitch Marner gets to just suck into his soul
Starting point is 01:09:36 that he'll never forget from this because he's mine. He's our player, so I'm excited about that. He's going to play with Connor McDavid. By the way, 27 seconds ago, CJ just tweeted out that Crosby and McKinnon have switched places. I was wondering if they would. I was wondering if they would. They're still on the same line.
Starting point is 01:09:54 But I'm sure Crosby's a little injured, so he probably goes to the wing and whatever. So now McKinnon's in charge of the speed, which makes sense, and Crosby's in charge of the board. I like that better, too. I think that makes more sense. But I think... Let the young man do the dirty work playing the 200-foot game.
Starting point is 01:10:10 That's it. You're the golden goal guy. you can do wing now do wing it's alright you were the golden goal guy 15 years ago yes and so to wrap up my long point
Starting point is 01:10:20 my long point is this a lot of people didn't want this to work I want tournaments inside the season to break the season up the all-star game doesn't cut it anymore
Starting point is 01:10:29 players used to care in the all-star game there used to be fights in the all-star game back in the day there are no longer that so let's do something else let's play for some pride
Starting point is 01:10:39 let's play for some money and let's have a good time and i think this you know four games for three games for each team plus a fourth for the best two teams perfect clean done we don't need semi-finals we don't need consolation just the winners win and the losers go home i love a light lift the winner plays four games some i think two teams are going to play three yeah i'm not totally sure i'm trying to think back to the 2010 olympics that canada won so there's three round robin games if i'm not mistaken they had to play a qualifier against germany semi-final against russia or no sorry quarterfinal against russia semi-final against slovakia um gold medal game they had to play
Starting point is 01:11:20 seven games it's a big difference yeah right it's a big difference there's just more room for error to tweak something to get fatigued to get hurt um it's it's such a light lift if this tournament works. It's going to be great for the Olympics. It's going to be great for the World Cup in 2028. Whatever they do in 2027 has got to be fun, too. It's going to be great for the Olympics in 2030.
Starting point is 01:11:46 Or 2029, or whatever the hell it is. I have no idea. No, 2030. 2030. It's going to be, this is what we need to grow this sport. And what I love is that I'm going to get to actively cheer for Brad Marchand. The Olympics are next year. They're next year, yeah.
Starting point is 01:12:01 2026 and then 2028. Yeah, and 2030, right? So you've got a 26 Olympics, you've got a 28 World Cup, you've got a 30 Olympics, and you've got a 32 World Cup already planned. Dude, this is amazing. And, you know, the All-Star Game was a nice idea
Starting point is 01:12:19 50 years ago when they started it. It's kind of dead now. Let's move on to something else, and I'm so glad they have. That's my point. It's great. The players, I mean, it's difficult to sell a product
Starting point is 01:12:32 uh where the product doesn't give a shit about the product yeah if the players don't care why should i i'm gonna waste my afternoon watching this bullshit no this i think is the way to go it's just been a hell of a time getting the nhl to commit now i'm gonna ask you guys with no real reason just go on gut on this who is this last week it was a four who's who's uh who is your tj sochi who has who is your young guns from the 2016 world cup if you can remember that the young guns team was stacked matthews hadn't even played a game in the nhl and he's playing with conor mcdavid it was great who do you guys have as your this guy could be like a tournament nvp damn very good question
Starting point is 01:13:24 i wonder if this is where zach warensky turns the tide in the norris conversation and he gets the respect he deserves oh yeah that's a good one yeah i know uh um i could also see uh this is an opportunity for brady kachuk to finally get out of the shadow of matthew imagine he has a banger tournament and is obviously the better kachuk oh i like that well i like that listen if you had to choose right now who's better come on now i think you know probably the guy who's the reigning cup champ right yeah so i think that could be a big one i don't know why i automatically went to team usa that's where you went yeah that's where jesse what about you what are your thoughts on this one i could see a tournament if and if i'm saying usa
Starting point is 01:14:23 wins then i'd have to pick somebody from team usa i can see a tournament where it's four games four games is real quick you can just get hot and connor hellebuck allows like one goal through four games or something but i thought he was a fraud and the tournament's not really fun because we got a goalie who's standing on his head like i could see that totally happening yeah yeah i could see hellebuck having a horrible tournament and jesse arguing at the end of the season that this should count towards the same percentage. You got him under 920.
Starting point is 01:14:51 What if he gets four shutouts? Is that a hat trick of shutouts plus one, Jesse? No, no. No, it's not a hat trick at all. Four. Three is a hat trick. You know,
Starting point is 01:14:59 I'm going to say something really silly here, but I, as I told you, I'm now turned around on the Rangers completely. Yeah. And I'm not talking
Starting point is 01:15:09 about JT Miller. I'm talking about what if Mika Zabinijad has an unreal tournament what does that mean for the Rangers he's going to be paired with Nylander it looks like either Forsberg or Raquel are going to be on his right wing maybe even Mason Raymond there's a strange amount of guys at this tournament who kind of need to flip the script on themselves right and he's he's up there among them I mean Elias Pettersson
Starting point is 01:15:37 yes which is the second line center on Sweden Elias Pettersson like completely blowing us away and being sweden's mvp which wouldn't have been a stretch a few years ago but definitely is now um would go a long way to healing what ails him i think i think with sabina jad if you have and and again tj sochi like they didn't win but if you have a guy who has like one of those heart and soul amazing tournaments i think uh i think all the nhl guys are going to be watching and i think if a if a guy like him has that sort of tournament uh he's going to go back to the rangers and they are just going to be fired up to make it into the playoffs. Because you're going to see these guys, I think,
Starting point is 01:16:19 at a higher level than just regular season hockey, too. That's not how this is going to play out. So this is going to be guys who are good in the playoffs being good. I'm excited about that. So, my next question. Who do you think, if there is one team that could disappoint the most, could shock the most, who would it be? Why would it happen?
Starting point is 01:16:41 Based on expectations. Jesse, I'm going to start with you. steve's thinking i think the easiest pick is canada for a similar reason that usa can dominate jordan binnington looks like he's going to be the starter for canada entering the tournament out of the what yeah cj tweeted that it was under my trophy tweet his next tweet was that jordan binnington is in the starters net no way my new answer is jordan binnington tournament mvp so either we're going to get an outstanding jordan binnington performance or we can see canada falter a little with with the hole in net there's the picture of him in the starters net
Starting point is 01:17:17 jordan binnington has the starters net as team canada practice begins john cooper is expected to officially announce his officially name his starter when he meets the media afterwards tweeted chris johnston so i can see if we're talking about biggest disappointments it's got to be from the guys we're rooting for right we saw what happened at the world juniors and the country turned upside down when when we lost there i think the biggest disappointment would come from canada not performing at their best i'll throw team usa in there just because like i feel like they're the favorites yeah anything other than them winning i think would be a disappointment if they lose in overtime in the final game though that's not going to be what qualify a disappointment
Starting point is 01:17:54 i think if canada beats usa it's not that big of a disappointment right right i like if canada loses i mean we'll be disappointed but most people will be like well yeah like yeah you don't have a goalie so i think that's kind of hockey fans would look at it that way i think yeah i think the people who understand like how the rosters are built i think the average person's like it's unacceptable canada loses anything in hockey because that's the attitude we've had for a hundred years in this country and i don't think that's going to change us because in reality the usa is right there with us one two but the perception of canada is still we better win every hockey tournament we're in yes and if it doesn't happen then i'm going to say uh that um fire everyone
Starting point is 01:18:37 never invite any of these players back it's dave cameron's i'm kidding all right so let's do the press conference hear that it's your money calling it wants a promotion elevate your savings with the scotia high interest savings account always earn high regular interest rates that grow the more you save and invest. Conditions apply. Visit scotiabank.com slash H-I-S-A to learn more. Scotiabank. You're richer than you think. The Presser SDP. The Steve Dangle Press Conference. All right. After four nations, there's only one thing we're going to be talking about. And that is
Starting point is 01:19:23 the trade deadline. yes sir oh did you want us to answer that no no no i filled in the gap all right so apollo nias on our discord okay said what is your dream trade deadline deal can be for any team and needs to be a deal that you think is at least possible if not probable so we're not saying mcdavid to the guys a probable possible deal that you would throw out there and be like oh yeah i can see that that you would be like so stoked while we're sitting here on march 7th and and hayden's and they are editing some some clip and it's like adam gets to freak out about this deal what is it so i gotta pick both teams both sides give me the full deal the full deal yeah a team a player
Starting point is 01:20:18 goes to somebody and like it could be you could trade draft picks yeah yeah yeah yeah i'm just trying to think of yeah this is a this is a thinker so take your time there's not much out there i'm over the moon for like doesn't have to be the leafs right no no oh yeah i guess you're right then yeah any team i think the other teams in the league are going to be more interesting yeah unfortunately so i'm gonna i'm gonna throw a wild card at you yes let's go i'm gonna start this one off and i'm going to say miko ranton what trade it again i think because if we have not heard a peep a peep about those contract negotiations in carolina do you really think carolina can go to june like they did last year with jake genzel and lose this player like they
Starting point is 01:21:09 last year with jay kensel and i you know whether you know i'm not talking i'm not going to judge him based on the six games that he's played there but if he has gotten to raleigh and go this is gone this is not for me if he if he definitively says him and his agent i'm not signing here long term right do they then move them and if i'm tulsky i might need that answer because i look like a hero right now to my owner to my fans to the team to the city to the thing you don't sign this guy it's gone from a one-time problem to which was a risk with Jake Gensel to a trend and other players are going to start to look at you and go what's wrong in Carolina why why won't these big guys play their sign their stay there and I know that Carolina's operated with different
Starting point is 01:21:58 budgets and a different mindset and that sort of thing but what you don't want is the perception and I'm not saying there's anything wrong with playing with their hands we already know it's great I'm not I'm not being like that however Gensel decided not to be there Rantanen cannot follow you can't do that if you hadn't done Gensel last year Rantanen would have been the risk and oh he walked in free agency and we tried but I just don't think you can do that this year so I say and and could and I say I say Rantanen Canucks Patterson Hurricanes and then you got a player yeah yeah and i don't know what i don't know if it's it's probably more on one side than me i don't know because here's the deal you could do one for one in a in a in
Starting point is 01:22:42 a world and i'm sure there's lots of stats guys who will throw their stats at me i do appreciate stats i do um the the point i'm trying to make is you get a long-term deal with peterson if you're the carolina hurricanes rantanen is a stud and if you're vancouver you go well we have what we have at center and we have to go make some acquisitions at center this summer and there are centermen available this summer as there are every summer but i think if you get a guy like if you can get a guy like rantanen performing like he does does he replace what you sort of lost with jt miller and can you get him locked up long term and that would be what rutherford doesn't make that deal unless that's possible and you just pay him okay i want
Starting point is 01:23:31 in absence of a really good like i i can't top that in terms of like because it's drama i want high drama that's high drama i want a side show okay give me a side show i want the predators to be extremely active okay um i want the rangers to be extremely active buyer or seller i don't care i want buffalo to be very active i want a sideshow now i'll give you a realistic trade option for a cup contender okay uh it's been suggested for the leafs i think it is maybe an even better fit for edmonton go to nashville get both ryan o'reilly and luke shen back can i tell you how profoundly that would change the oilers oh be huge so here's here's what they got right now for uh on daily face off the top line is victor arvidsson connor mcdavid zach
Starting point is 01:24:32 hyman no no second line jeff skinner leon dry saddle cory perry no no matthias yanmark ryan nugent hopkins connor brown fine fourth line vasily put coals in adam henry kissberry captain add o'reilly to that group you replace nuge as the third line center with a proper shutdown center and you throw nuge either on the left side of mcdavid or dry sidle pushing down either arvidson skinner or both oh yeah is skinner not a part of that deal going the other way for the salary that's a good question i don't know i think he might be maybe and then you get luke shen you could do echo bouchard that doesn't get touched uh then your bottom four is durnall nurse john klingberg brett kulak ty emberson do you do shen nurse i don't know probably not so you would uh
Starting point is 01:25:33 you could keep Klingberg with Nurse and do Kulak-Shen pushing out Emberson, or you could do Emberson-Nurse-Shen-Kulak pushing out Klingberg. Did I get that right? I think so. I like that. It's less sexy than yours, way less sexy,
Starting point is 01:25:52 but I think it would... I mean, if you're a good GM, you call the bad ones. Yeah. Barry Trotz is that this year, and it would cure what ails the Oilers. By the way, just to add on to the Oilers, there are rumors this morning that John Gibson and the long-rumored Oilers thing,
Starting point is 01:26:11 John wants to be where, this is hilarious, and you expect a goalie to want this, but he says, I'll accept a trade as long as I'm the first guy, I'm the guy. He's had a good year. If I'm the Ducks, am I insane to ask for Stuart Skinner as part of the return? Yes, and the Oilers wouldn't do that.
Starting point is 01:26:32 you are insane. Why? Because Stuart Skinner is their backup. They're not trading for John Gibson so they can have the same situation where Gibson goes down and then you have nobody. Calvin Pickard has been really good.
Starting point is 01:26:43 So get Calvin Pickard then. Of course. Anaheim, he's yours. Fair enough. By the way, John Gibson, 23 games this year, 915 save percentage. 915?
Starting point is 01:26:56 Turn him back the clock. 269. Look at that. 269 goals against average. only nine wins in 23 games but it's the ducks grading on a curve it means more i think so yeah there there's no bad true goals saved above expected as a team is they've saved i think it's like over 30 goals that they've allowed that's that's crazy yeah yeah they might even just want to hang on to them yeah why not i don't know if he fits their window like that would
Starting point is 01:27:24 probably be the number one answer but yeah for the good situation for them it's got to be like when do you maximize the value on how many years are left on the contract right because you don't want to wait if you're going to trade him eventually you don't want to wait till it's like expiring when you can trade him a year ahead of time and maybe get more for it so right an interesting dance there with a guy who like with the carlson thing where san jose traded him after he won the norris do you got to trade him at the peak of his value because he's never going to have a year like this again that was the only way eric carlson was getting out of san jose yep was to win a norris and put up a hundred points and then who knows what happens with his career after that like
Starting point is 01:27:58 is john gibson doing this and now he can get out at this point and gibson has two more years after this one yeah it's not it's not like expiring anytime soon like yeah and he's only 30 john gibson's only 30 maybe you hold on really he's only 30 years old maybe you hold on you got maybe you hold on gibson yeah when you're good i mean he wants to be a starter that might be a hitch in the giddy up but like hey john uh what year is it okay uh former ninth overall pick 34 points in 42 games in the AHL this year. The Edmonton Oilers, I think,
Starting point is 01:28:33 could pitch Matt Savoy right out the door. They got him from Buffalo for not a ton. That was the Ryan McLeod deal. Yeah. I mean, if you're the Oilers, you have no choice
Starting point is 01:28:46 but to blow the doors off. There you go. Jesse, do you have one? In terms of a trade? Yeah, give us a trade. I would love to see Brad Marchand in Colorado or edmonton oh i think there's there's rumors swirling about him being on the block if steve
Starting point is 01:29:02 mentioned it last episode if this was any other team in the world you trade in expiring for your agent if you're not going to make the playoffs and you're and you need futures you know like 35 five six he's getting up there his contract expires you haven't re-signed him like there's no long-term deal there um you get you can get a ton for him if you want to compete next year or in the future it makes sense to trade marchand i think edmonton he would be a perfect spot there especially if you can delay Evander Kane's return to the playoffs which looks like it's going to be imagine Marshan and Kane on the same with Corey Perry with Corey Kane and Marshan give them the Stanley Cup right now there's no way that team loses a single playoff game that's just shitheads
Starting point is 01:29:40 throughout the years like also Marshan would fit perfectly in Colorado where they always need help he could slide right in there in a top six role he has the Nova Scotia connection with mckinnon i think marshan to one of those two teams would be excellent stuff that makes that makes crosby i think more likely to be an av than ever how are you well how are you gonna turn hey my buddies brad and nathan from from halifax are saying come on down you know come on down people have been looking at the four nations all wrong it is going to be the olympics the tampering olympics so that is what it's going to be the tampering olympics that's true austin's gonna get that jesse austin's gonna get so many little hey maybe you come play with me one day
Starting point is 01:30:22 no it's not a very long contract it's not long austin's gonna be saying uh hey you should come play with me in toronto the captain he's he's the guy bringing people in you can't tell me there's not gonna be at least one dinner where they're like so mitch uh like oh yeah mitch is the one yeah it's just the one just connor and david like silence listen mitch so like uh what do you uh so what's the fucking deal so we have an article where's your favorite restaurant like in north america nhl market what is that what's the joke the joke is where you've signing but they can't ask him straight oh so we have an article here from awful announcing about the nhl's viewership numbers i'm gonna read a little paragraph here for you for you guys and then
Starting point is 01:31:13 you can react accordingly according to braylon breeze of sports media watch last thursday's game between the san jose sharks and seattle kraken averaged just 175 000 viewers on espn the least watched nhl game of the year for the network and lowest viewed program on espn for the entire day the game which began at 10 30 p.m eastern already not a prime television viewing window was outdrawn by its lead in an iowa state kansas state women's basketball game more than two to one the cyclones and wildcats averaged 390 000 viewers per programming insider wednesday's viewership didn't look much better a philadelphia flyers new jersey devils game on tnt and true tv averaged 250 000 viewers which was actually a 59 increase versus last year's comparable window
Starting point is 01:31:59 Later that night, TNT and TruTV averaged a paltry 138,000 viewers for a Pittsburgh-Utah game, which itself was a non-exclusive broadcast. Needless to say, these figures do not look good for the NHL, no matter how you slice them. ESPN has regularly been drawing nearly a million viewers recently for a brand new property like TGL. even thursday's east west shrine bowl game on nfl network outdrew the nhl on espn by about 10 000 viewers what do you guys think about the conversations lately around the nhl's viewership numbers down in america well i guess first and foremost tv ratings are nonsense and like who knows viewership could be up for all we know like that's how freaking unreliable these stupid
Starting point is 01:32:45 numbers are uh the other is like oh man a lot of people didn't tune into the sharks cracking yeah what did you think that it'd be weird if you thought they would what's there to watch oh i'm gonna watch the stars on well celebrating will smith so the sharks are the better the more watchable commodity there i bet most of those are from the sharks market because of the kids and then there's the crack hey there's also the point and and you know uh this is this is this is a problem the states every time we talk about how hard it is to watch a game in the states we get flooded with americans going thank you why is it so hard and apparently espn plus is not easy to navigate i don't have it it's not easy to navigate to find games uh tnt is not
Starting point is 01:33:38 easy to navigate to find games especially for streaming which most people of our generation are so how many and listen i know a local game between uh the sharks and kraken is maybe not going to do ballistic numbers but i would also ask um how easy are we making it to find and how many people and this is what the television estimates never have because they never want to point to this but i always thought it would be an interesting one to find out how many people are stealing this do we estimate game of thrones used to talk about like hbo used to pump the fact that that game of thrones was the most stolen television show in the world. Of all time.
Starting point is 01:34:14 Of all time. And the reason for that is because they wanted you to sign up for HBO and they knew most people are not going to steal it because they don't have the technological know-how. Most people. It's not like back in the day. Adam and I are old enough to remember neighbors who had weird dangly cords feeding into their house.
Starting point is 01:34:29 Yes, yes. When people were torrenting Game of Thrones, right? That's what was happening. um what what i wish leagues would do and they will never allow this is they go well we estimate another 25 percent of people or 20 or 10 percent were stealing this and they must talk about that internally because you know when you steal the the broadcaster even though you've seen all the commercials that's a value add for the commercial people hey i'm i'm let's say i'm coca-cola okay big brand i buy a whole i bought the whole hockey game i have every sponsorship and every commercial
Starting point is 01:35:09 all the commercial breaks are just coca-cola okay but it says 175 000 people watched and you estimated that it would be 200 000 200 000 might have watched but i just got the value added back to my uh we have that company now is to make good on that 25 000 that you missed on and i think that's the you know if you make it easy people will want to pay for it and so i i poo-pooed a lot of the nba ratings talk earlier in this season and i want to do the same with this conversation about the nhl ratings because one thing i feel like those numbers that they threw out in this article that went semi-viral on nhl twitter circles um about the sharks and cracking game being so low they those numbers are a little cherry-picked because they also mentioned in
Starting point is 01:35:52 the article that 1.1 million viewers viewed the rangers bruins game on abc which was a season high for the network which abc is the channel everybody's gotten since television was invented in america yes when it is readily available to the people they got a million plus one you know 1.1 million viewers because people could watch the game on network television yeah so i feel like when these games are available and they're easy to watch people watch it because hockey is a good sport to watch and when they're hidden behind whatever espn plus app they have or on cable or on on like tnt where not a lot of people get that channel it's hard to watch it's 2025 don't make it hard i'll just steal it or not watch it yeah so the the fact that a shark's
Starting point is 01:36:41 kraken game on espn plus that's on a difficult app that nobody has wasn't watched a lot i'm like yeah that makes sense when it's on a channel everybody gets everybody watched it so yeah the same with the the winter classic ratings too everybody misconstrued those numbers give it they took them off the the cable where everybody has they took them off abc or nbc where everybody has the games and they threw them on tnt a channel nobody has so those ratings are gonna be cut in half because people don't own that channel right it's not a hockey problem it's a tv problem yeah it's a putting it where people are thing yes and there are very few products that are going to drive like think about it like this uh i uh love major league soccer i actually really like it i
Starting point is 01:37:25 watch it that sort of thing i have the apple pass right i will watch that on the side i have formula one i have the formula one app um and i watch a lot of i watch formula one both on the app and on tsn because i like the sky sports feed and i can't get that on the app okay that's great um the the issue i have with both of those is that how many people what are you doing outside of the sport to drive the subscription and what i mean by that is formula one has a little thing called drive to survive right where they profile the athletes the athletes become stars now drive to survive works for formula one because there's only 20 drivers you can you can profile 20 drivers over 10 episodes that's easy you can do that um the nhl has tried it with amazon i thought i thought
Starting point is 01:38:12 that worked great but the problem that an mls has the problem that a formula one might have a problem that hockey has when you're in growth stage where they need to grow is what are you giving people to whet their appetite if you put it on a streamer you're essentially monetizing your own audience plus the streamers audience how are you reaching new people and where broadcast channels still have a lot of value and where radio still has a lot of value is they reach the mass public everybody has it even if you don't watch it okay like i am a tiny little boy why can't i if i'm sports net i'm now the emperor of sports net yeah why can't i just take the feed that shows the game and the commercials throw them on my youtube channel that has over a million subscribers turn off the ads
Starting point is 01:39:09 so that just the ads that have been paid for well if you're rogers you would keep the watch page ads too well yeah but i'm trying to i'm trying to i'm i'll tell you i'm a magnanimous dictator i'll tell you why so why because your cable business which is how you built the company before the internet is going to say to you, Steve, we have a cable business we need to protect here. And I remember being on... Remember you guys used to make fun of me
Starting point is 01:39:36 for being on Rogers Cable 1? Like the Barker channel? I thought that was pretty cool. Okay, well, it was like people would like take pictures of me. Yeah, when you turn on your television in Canada, you see Adam's face. Yeah, that's what it is.
Starting point is 01:39:49 I'm pretty darn cool. I would record with you, talk to you on the phone on the way home, and then get inside and SL would be like, how was your day? Oh, and I'd turn on the TV and it's you! Me again. I just couldn't get away from it.
Starting point is 01:40:00 And you're there talking about like Suicide Squad. Yeah. Buy it for $8.99 on your Rogers box. On your ROD, Rogers On Demand, which is a Rogers cable product. I will tell you this now because I'm so far removed from Rogers. I think I've said this before. But when Sportsnet launched what is now Sportsnet Plus as an app, okay? They were, it's $25 a month and you get everything.
Starting point is 01:40:23 Or it was $200 a year if you wanted to pay the yearly fee. Okay? Pretty good deal. You get everything Sportsnet ever does on every channel, east, west, north, south, whatever. We were ready to go to air with that package and promoting it because the whole point of the show is to promote Rogers Cable offerings. And it's a Rogers product. Sportsnet belongs to Rogers. It's under the same umbrella.
Starting point is 01:40:47 I'm over explaining this because we got a call from Rogers Cable, the programming guys, the guys who actually are like to protect the cable business within Rogers. And they said, you cannot promote the Sportsnet app. And we said, why not? And they said, because you exist solely to promote Rogers Cable products. And that's not a Rogers Cable product. Yeah, but Sportsnet is a part of Rogers Cable packages. Yes, but when someone buys a subscription, that doesn't go to cable, that goes to digital. you ever wonder why so many digital entities in this country completely suck shit well it's not
Starting point is 01:41:22 by accident so guess what we promoted that week what tsn the channel the the five tsn channels and the great offerings because you gotta pay to get like all five channels on your rogers box that's right yeah and that money's going to rogers cable that makes sense and so they would rather their strategy so the reason that you can't have that you can have that the reason you can't have that is because rogers cable inside that company is still an enormous factor same with bell far bigger than every radio station and every television station in the entire country revenue combined rogers alone would be would make way more money on their cable than they would on any other media entities they're resisting reality and they've been resisting
Starting point is 01:42:08 reality but but they would say to you we have more money to make on the other side so we don't really give a shit that's why i know i think you're comfortable stuck in your old ways and you refuse to change i agree with that you're not very good at this anymore yeah i listen i agree yeah just saying uh back up some numbers i was talking about earlier about nhl moving from nbc to tnt for their winter classic game uh the nbc last winter classic that was done on nbc had 1.96 million viewers in America. The most recent one on TNT had 0.92, so less than a million people watched it, the Blackhawks one that just happened. But if you compare how many people have NBC compared to TNT, 277 million Americans have at least one television set with NBC on it. That's
Starting point is 01:42:58 88 of america in comparison uh 71 million have tnt so the nhl put their product on far far less accessible service and the ratings tanked this a equals b the the thing that the nhl went for was being on the more established property like espn and i get that you should be but the problem is that the nhl in the 20 years since they've been off espn has fallen off significantly in comparison to other sports, which means when TSN is setting its programming lineup, even though they have 40 million channels, they're not going to put NHL oftentimes in a primetime slot.
Starting point is 01:43:35 They're just not because they know the ratings are not going to be there. ESPN. Sorry, ESPN. Yeah. So they're not going to put them in primetime the way that they probably should or the way that they would have had the NHL not locked the players out in 2004 when they were at the start of a hundred million dollar deal with ESPN and then ESPN dropped them.
Starting point is 01:43:52 My advice to them in the past when they're negotiating this deal would have been to fight for or sacrifice some dollars up front or over the term of the contract to have important marquee games on ABC. Like if you're doing the deal with ESPN and we saw with the Rangers Bruins game when it's on that channel, you're reaching a broader audience and whatever you're sacrificing in terms of the contract money you're getting per year. it's a hard to convince the owners that hey just putting those games on abc means so much more than the dollars you're getting up front so things like the winter classics should have been negotiated into being on abc if you're doing the deal with espn i agree yeah i agree and i believe they will be i believe they're doing some of the i think every year it splits with tnt and ab and espn with the stanley cup final yes so we could see the stanley cup file on abc every other year i think it is so that's great for them yes that respect and the playoffs are important yeah
Starting point is 01:44:45 That's where you're actually making your money. Yeah. So, shall we wrap it up? Let's do it. All right, let's do it. Let's do it. We're doing it. We're wrapping.
Starting point is 01:44:55 We're wrapping. Here we are. This is it. Wrapping it up. Stream tomorrow. Yeah. On the SDP on the YouTube channel. 8 o'clock game?
Starting point is 01:45:03 After we wrap it up. 8 o'clock. 8 o'clock game. Get a puny head. Squish his head. SDP. or dangle at Adam W Y L D E and at Jesse Blake.
