Canada's ultimate challenge turns our country into one epic obstacle course hosted by Brandon
Gones. This breathtaking, heart-pounding cross-country adventure will keep you on the
edge of your seat over seven weeks. Total strangers form formidable teams to participate
in 16 jaw-dropping challenges. And the one that is blowing us away, and by the way,
this is, we're in week two of this, you can watch all this on CBC Gem, is the lobster traps.
Because, dude, the Acadian lobster traps. It's one of those things where you're like,
okay super canadian they might be laying it on a little thick and then it starts and you're like
oh my god that's actually so hard right steve was steve was upset because we watched some of
it together and steve was upset at some of the strategies that the team had going on because
it's attached to a rope for anybody that doesn't know well and like drag it in across the sand or
you go out and get them they just started like it's one thing to just start and be like we can
tug of war this like several hundred feet or whatever it was um but also you have like your
littlest person at the back no anchor tie that thing around it's you didn't watch squid game
come on it was also just not the right strategy to go about it you have to go in and get it you
never went to elementary school well yeah and that yeah you gotta man you gotta go in and get
them by what and and and so it's funny because uh we're watching a little bit in the studio to kind
of refresh beforehand and and producer maddie's like like uh i didn't know there were beaches
like that in canada it seems like seems like there are plenty of beaches in canada they're all cold
and one of the guys on team green which did not finish the challenge seized up like he's this big
jacked guy uh and he like he like couldn't move you mean all of them big jack they're all yeah i
know can i tell you i have a favorite like i'm rooting for one person specifically okay and it's
quinton he's on team yellow he is a twitch streamer so he is in our business gotta shout him out and
he's also from oakville when i'm from mississauga so i'm from springfield he's from shelbyville but
the proximity there right i'm rooting for somebody who's in our field and is out there being jacked
doing challenges important question jesse yeah who shines bright what that's their thing they go who
shines bright you come on man come on man so what happens when we release 20 extraordinary canadians
onto canada's largest obstacle course to complete in canada's ultimate challenge will they form
alliances or crush their competitors there were definitely some arguments on team green after that
one uh so check it out every single sunday there's a new episode on cbc gem and of course today's
episode which is the second episode has elimination as a part of it third oh it's the third yeah
because the first two dropped right on yes sorry i meant yeah okay the third one would be dropping
today yeah so what we have is elimination today and that's when it gets real spicy check it out
Canada's ultimate challenge.
Sundays, stream free on CBC Gem.
Well, let me tell you what I have prepped here.
I'm going to quote The Doors.
This is the end.
My only friend, the end.
And I'm going to read a quote to you from somebody else.
Sir Kyle of Dubas.
Perhaps the path needs to shift slightly.
It needs to be adapted slightly.
You get in between persistence and full belief in the process versus being a little too staunch and rigid.
That's Kyle Dubas, May 2023.
Later that week.
Just being different doesn't solve something.
brendan shanahan may 2023 that's after kyle dubas was fired i'm gonna give you um a stat here
jonah siegel of the athletic put into his article playoff wins since 2014 2015 and i'm talking about
series wins the top of the list i'm gonna give you the top three tampa 18 rounds one
Vegas, 11 rounds won.
Pittsburgh, nine rounds won.
Okay?
Now, there are only three teams with zero.
That's LA, Detroit, Buffalo.
Toronto is tied with New Jersey, Philadelphia, the Coyotes, Minnesota, and Seattle with one round.
Oh, Minnesota.
That's kind of...
They won one.
Only one.
I'm surprised that it's only been one.
Me too.
Me too.
i'm sure they would look at us and they'd say same bro and i i think it's only like i think
it's key here that we just kick off with this headline from cj with the athletic
leafs latest exit makes it clear time is up for shanna plan
in 2021 the leafs blew a 3-1 series lead
the lfr after that game i went for 25 minutes straight
about year in year out year in year out here was what you had in front of you there were no more
excuses there was nothing ahead of you but a clear laid path to the second round and let's
be honest probably the third round the winnipeg jets got swept by the montreal canadians smacked
smacked by the montreal canadians
and then who knows then you're in the final four anything can happen and it did you know
we were pretty staunch supporters of you know we can and we will
and all that and holding all that
together
COVID happened COVID
ruined everything the cap
didn't go up anymore
the plan was we're going to give these guys
long deals it's going to go
into the future they're going to
age with the deals they're going to age well
and when the cap goes up like the cap
should be like close to 100 million dollars by now
well what if COVID
didn't happen yeah no if COVID didn't happen that
was running it okay
right 92 yeah 92 shave 8 million off 92 it was supposed to go up and up and up
2021 you got a few things one you know it's been flat for a couple years and it's probably
going to stay that way and number two these guys choke it's their number one export
They had a third period lead again and blew it again immediately after 90 seconds.
But you know,
there's fans don't cheer enough.
Man's are not,
the fans are not loud enough there.
I feel so bad for that one dude and his group of friends.
They caught a puck.
Nylander scored that happened within like 90 seconds of each other.
That dude was the God of Massachusetts.
and then the Leafs ruined it and his night Nylander definitely saw too because they they
panned to him on the bench he had a little smile and then he ducked his head for the rest of the
time the camera shot was on yep so he definitely saw that those guys caught the puck and he was a
little it was cheeky exactly yeah so you know there's a lot of you know revisionist history
but you know hindsight is 2020 and i think in this case hindsight is 2021
that was the that was the year that was the time i agree with that completely
that was the year and they're like nope we're sticking to it you're talking about montreal
montreal yeah and then and then the next year they lost in the first round again
nope seventh game though
they finally win a series
only win one game in the next
round
their GM shows the slightest
inclination at finally blowing up the core
and they fire him
and it's gonna cost the guy who
didn't or it's gonna cost the guy
who fired him his job
because we are now
three playoff runs
past the playoff run
that should have been
it that should have been it and now where do they even go from here so every every year just with
that playoff run there's always a built-in excuse there's always been one and that year it was you
know jt went out that was no coming coming out of that one that was like okay keith just got there
to be fair like that's what that's what they said he because they fired him they fired babcock at
the end of 2019 and then the pandemic happens 2020 keith's never had like the full team in
a non-covid situation i mean that's the excuse for not firing keith yeah no and not making
wholesale changes you know you want to give all they protect justin hall yeah uh in the expansion
and kerfoot because over jared mccann listen the point i was just trying to make is that every year
there was a built-in excuse by either the fan base or management and they were they kind of felt
justified in their reasoning but hey you were right in that they should have moved on and let's
be honest we made first off we bought some of these and we made the same excuses we did because
we felt and i felt honestly like okay i i mean i was particularly tough on marner in the in the
montreal series i remember that it was bad that's why you were it wasn't personal yeah but it is it
is it is bad but time has passed he's played well he was bad in those games let me throw this don't
ever apologize let me throw these quotes at you okay uh neil andrew doesn't think there's an issue
with the core he said look i don't think there's an issue with the core i think we effing battled
all they're all series we battled hard and got in a game seven and ot and it's a shitty feeling
austin matthews said i feel we say that every year but it's an incredible group incredibly tight
john taveras we're right there it's a very small difference one notable absence in fact two notable
absences from any quotes are mitchell marner and morgan riley both of whom are assistant captains
with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
And, and, and, and
the reason for that
is that they refused to speak
to the media last night.
Leafs PR
all year long
have done
double time.
Nobody's been really reporting it,
but they've done double time
on preventing
key players
from coming out
and talking.
And the reporters haven't,
I have to give the reporters credit.
I've not seen one complain about it,
But we know because we're hearing it from behind the scenes.
And after a game seven, overtime loss, if you wear an assistant captain or a captain
on your jersey and you do not come out and speak to the press, you do not deserve to
have that.
That is not leadership.
I don't care how upset you are.
The reporters can wait for you to pull it together.
My opinion, just to kick things off, just so we're clear, is that, and this will never
happen.
but if you're a leader on this team and you make money on this team then you're accountable to the
media it's not noah gregor's job it's not david comp's job no offense to them no nobody really
cares what they have to say anyway yeah i was gonna ask were there microphones in their face
i'm sure there wasn't because here's the thing the leafs don't allow you in the dressing room
the way they used to now they bring them out hey uh hey david uh you finally scored after like
50 minutes uh why did keith decide to immediately put you on the ice we'll get we'll get to that
and i just so i want to be i want to be out front of this i am completely so disappointed
in both of those two players for not coming out and taking accountability for the team
that they are part of the core five of now there really is a core five adam i mean they they're
probably uh you know sick of of saying it so what what they could have done and like the leafs have
the budget to have done this what they could have done is instead of uh having to say any words at
all into a microphone just hold an ipad in front of your face with every end of season press
conference you've done since 2017 it's the same a compilation getting increasingly more depressed
but also saying the exact same damn thing jesse i just sent you a quote and it's uh a video quote
uh it's on text do you mind yeah the shelvin keeve one yeah is that yeah not the one you sent
because this uh not with the graphics on it oh that network oh is there graphics let's do this
one apologies yeah here we go um mitch marner has been stealing money from from the tron we're
getting into the mitch marner thing later but i wanted to i need to say if we're talking about
him not talking to the media are we talking about that are we doing keith we will we'll we're talking
to the media right now we'll get into the performances and the game but i i wanted to
set the tone because keith got out and talked in front of the microphone sure matthews got out and
talked in front of the microphone matthews again looking like a character from corpse right he
looks like he's gonna die out he's exhausted we're gonna find out something is horribly wrong with
that guy the the the the tone of his uh like the skin under his eyes he looks pallid he looks like
he's lost weight too yep a lot of weight for the guy Nylander spoke Tavares spoke Matthew spoke
Keefe probably spoke for his last time as the head coach oh yeah for your team's perspective
what was the biggest challenge generating offense well it's I mean they're a very structured team
You know, they do a very good job through the neutral zone and they protect their net as well or better than most any team in the NHL.
And they were content to do that.
You know, they were content to do that.
You know, it's very evident.
Teams play the Leafs.
They set up the game for the Leafs to beat themselves.
What a face, too.
I thought we did that in game three and four.
We beat ourself with how we played at home.
He's right.
I thought in games one and two, parts of one were like three and four.
But game two, certainly, and five and six, the way we played,
that's a way that can win and did win three of the games in this series
and didn't beat ourself.
What does he mean by that for a second here?
what does he mean by if you said in there steve you agree with what his summation of it was
especially in games three and four and i think leaf fans on the whole get that feeling and have
had that feeling for a better part of a decade but couldn't necessarily always put it into words
what does he mean they i i mean the leafs took a lot of penalties they didn't get very many saves
but one thing that i've said from game one of the series and i said from the beginning of game seven
too game one of the series I remember being like Simone Benoit's had a lot of the puck
like offensively and I think it's because like it's nothing against him like he was making the
right play at the time but it's like the Bruins are funneling it to him and they're letting him
have it game seven the same thing happened and then the Bruins didn't give up their zone
never gave up the you know they made life very difficult in the neutral zone never gave up their
blue line but when they did it was always just hugging the wall and it's like handed off to
Tavares especially on the power play hugging the wall and it just felt like the Leafs feel nice and
comfortable and nice and hugged in tight playing on the perimeter and the bruins were like you go
ahead buddy you go right ahead we're gonna we're gonna let you have the puck your possession
numbers are gonna look really good like time with the puck in the offensive zone it's gonna look
good it's gonna look like you're and then your advanced stats staff might say keep doing it
i don't i don't think no i don't think no no and and i will say this the like analytic staff
for competent nhl teams know that that's all bullshit they know that that's all right which
is why you should pay you should be careful with the type of stats that are publicly available
because they're so based on things like that and they don't tell you anything yeah i really don't
tell you it's it's important to have the information but um it's it's a gift to explain it
and you know just in conversations i've had with team staffs and you can be like whoa it's steve
dangle he doesn't okay whatever you got to tell yourself i've spoken to these people um but it it
takes a really competent smart team to be able to explain it they just have a good staff like they
know that that's all bullshit and what what i see in sheldon keith's face there i know a lot of
people want this guy fired um i see a frustrated guy who's like i've told them over and over and
over and over and over and over and over again i've told them over and over again get pucks in
the net get to the front of the net the amount of times in this series the leafs had the puck
in the corners or behind the net or along the half wall and there's no one in front
for the person with the thing
Domi standing there with the puck
like Bueller
no the only guy on the team
who is consistently
in front of the net trying
falling over himself hilariously
God love him and I hope he stays
I doubt he does Tyler Bertuzzi
every game
he's fighting like
he's like
he's like
if they took Michael Posetta
and they were like what if he was an all-star like yeah like just yeah a rabid animal he's
obviously got a lot more high end there um but just a level of fuck it to his game that you need
in these situations and he was good for the Leafs he had four points he had four points and he also
got into Brad Marchand's face a lot oh very valuable really helped neutralize him um when
he wasn't in the box um helped neutralize a lot of guys um he softened the bruins up pretty nice
for for florida um a few guys did but jim montgomery and the bruins were content to just
you go ahead buddies you guys handle it along the perimeter how many times did the leafs throw it
into the slot and they got a rebound and it went in never how many times well i think domi got domi
in game two Domi got one I remember that Domi in game two I think that's it the rest of them were
off the rush I think that's it well and like what are the ones off the rush Tavares goes screw it
I'll do it myself in overtime you had the setup from Marner to Nyes Marner to Nyes which is a
miraculous play that you're gonna get once or twice a series and you get three Nylander goals
that way i think well they're okay so there was kneelander last night there was a breakaway from
kneelander and uh kneelander scored by floating it on and it goes in off a knee
jesse yeah there's a tweet you had about the amount of goals scored i promise you we're
going to get into breaking up the game here but you're here i just i just want to put a bow
on the shell yeah sure stuff yeah just on that too yeah just because this is just a wonderful
tweet it's very funny and i think it's a good analysis of the lease from someone who didn't
have a dog in the fight in this series uh from japers rink they cover the washington capitals
regarding keith's quote um besides this being in the just fire me hall of fame
which is a great opening to a tweet besides this being in the just fire me hall of fame
it speaks to what i've been saying re coaching forever you can win a ton of regular season games
with high-end talent advantage because teams aren't planning uh game planning you much
playoffs are different very boudreaux caps and i don't want to move off of keith because i think
i think the goal scoring thing matters in context with keith jeff's dad that's why i want to bring
it up totally uh because your tweet on this is great what is it 14 straight game last 14 playoff
games the Leafs have failed to score more than
three goals and in one
of those last 14 games did
they score exactly three. How are they
13 of 14 games. Yeah
13 of the last 14 games
the Leafs have got two goals or less. Yes. In
the playoffs. Yes. Playoff
games. How many forwards do the Leafs have making
double digit next season
for
I've asked this before
I'll ask it again. What
do you mean they can't score
what do you mean
what
you have
a 10.9 million dollar winger
an 11 million dollar center
an 11.5 million dollar winger
and the highest paid player in the National Hockey League
who's also the best goal scorer in the National Hockey League
what do you mean
you can't score
William Nylander didn't play until game four
he led the team in goals
with three what do you mean you can't score matthews only had one he obviously was sick
and missed time and he assisted on the leafs only goal they had in the damn uh game seven
he led the team in scoring with i think four points five no four points in five games kill me
kill me now immediately please he only had one goal but he was limited Marner and Tavares combined
for two Marner and Tavares we're not getting we won't go that route yet no I know but like save
that bullet the Leafs can't score but that's it that is the number one argument for breaking up
the core it I don't I didn't I wouldn't care if they all had 10 points in seven games if they all
had spectacular seven game series if i would still blow it up i would still blow that up
because the damn team that's built around these scoring players cannot score when it matters
are you kidding what are we still doing here bro get it over with enough it's over stop oh i like
this guy i have his jersey fuck it get a new one geez it's over they can't do it leave it blank
get your own name on it matthews and neilander will be here for a long time put do whatever i
don't i don't whoever you want to move off of the core your idea for how this team improves going
forward cannot not involve the core being blown up it can't what are we doing here so you kidding
playoff points by the way you're you're talking about that bertuzzi domi and matthews led the
team with four points each and then willie came in at three with nize marner labushkin
all tied at three points so that's the scoring there but uh with with keith he talked about how
he he can't get them going and he sounds like he's out of answers and the guy you know he has
all of the horses and it sounds like he's been hitting his head against the wall and he can't
get them going i think it's it's both i think it's it's keith can't game plan he's been i think
he's been out coached in every playoff series he's been in even in even in the one they won
with john cooper like i feel like tampa paid played such a close game there dominic ducharme
he blew a 3-1 series lead to dominic and i think for for keith it definitely sounded like during
that press conference if you just look at the look on his face and the words he's saying he
knows it's over well that's why he was so honest exactly but i think in those moments you take from
those words that there's a man who has been defeated because he has tried everything he
can with this group of players and unfortunately the way hockey works is you don't get another
shot with a completely different group of players it's time to remove those players as well as the
guy who failed to get those players to the promised land 2021 the amazon documentary
uh documenting the leafs canada season with the canada division they were killing everyone
they were running over every team in canada first place but all season long keith was a guy who got
it and i and he's gonna get fired and a lot of people are gonna relish in it but
there is an aspect of he always knew what the problem was 2021 the amazon documentary he's like
we're not scoring playoff style goals we're not scoring playoff style goals playoffs come around
the series gets deep and they do not score playoff style goals they don't score any goals
actually until they're down two or three nothing the next year there was an emphasis on playoff
style goals and they took a step and they lost again 2023 comes it's the easily the best step
in that direction they were a nightmare team to play in front of the net they got a lot of greasy
goals this year in this series especially against the boston bruins bring around the rosy puck
it full of posy parameter parameter we're out again but we know we already know that's not
how he wants them to play they just they simply won't do it and like part of they won't or they
can't it doesn't matter to me yeah no but i think like both things are true there they won't and
they don't i don't think they have the ability to ah bullshit they they got some big guys they got
big guys who can fight and they wouldn't do it or can't do it or you know what like i'm not sure i
care about the how we get there all i know is uh part of being a coach is motivating your players
to do the things that you want and he's told them for years here's how you win in the playoffs
and they won't do it they're not interested they're scared they whatever it is um they won't
do it they can't do it and now it's going to cost all of them their time in toronto they're all gone
so that's that's how it works yeah yeah this is these are this is the results business he can't
get his guys going and they can't do it so they all need to go and and and this is what but they
were close this is what doesn't matter i'm kidding this is what we were talking about and then i
think kyle dube has finally admitted last day or last may which was you're right i do love my guys
The rigidity of the process prevented them from understanding where their weaknesses were. They hired people who were very smart, but all agreed and believed the same thing. And unfortunately, when that happens, if you know that the whole thing was the score, you know, the whole mantra with the book, the score takes care of itself, which Kyle Dubas like lived by.
You know, when Kyle Dubas talked about the, and this is, I think, the most telling quote of his entire career in Toronto, not the we can and we will.
When Blake Snell was pulled out of a World Series game, pitching his lights out, and the Tampa Bay Rays went on to lose the game because their backup pitching, their relievers couldn't take care of business.
Where have we seen that before, Jays fans?
And Kyle Dubas unironically gets up in front of the media and with a straight face says
to them, I would have done the same thing.
And hang on, hang on to this.
I want you to I want you to absorb that.
I want you to go back and look up Blake Snell.
Google Blake Snell pulled from World Series game.
Go look at what happened afterwards.
Catastrophe.
And the fact that the NHL general manager at the time, Kyle Dubas for the Toronto Maple
beliefs said i would have done the same thing and then two years later right before he gets fired
goes maybe we were too rigid maybe we didn't look at things objectively because we believe so much
in what we were doing that we just didn't take the results as seriously as they should as we
should the one thing in the book the score takes care because i've read the book the score takes
care of itself we get it you're smart the one thing that they say in the book is you have to
look at your results hey the one thing that they say is like okay so you may think you're doing
really well in one area but you have to you have to drill down even in the areas where you're good
and go okay but are we and i don't think the toronto maple leafs did that until last may and
i think that's where dubious switched gears i think they were a few weeks away from mitch
Marner's no trade clause kicking in five and I think and I think Brandon Shanahan said no no no
this is mine and and let me let me just read a stat to you Drew just sent this through the
Maple Leafs are the second team that he did uh the second team in the MLB NBA NFL NHL history to make
the playoffs eight straight seasons but win a total of only one playoff round in that span or
none the only other team to do it was the Buffalo Savers from 87 88 to 94 95 good lord now it's a
little bit of a cherry pick stat because there are plenty of teams that went eight consecutive
years without making the playoffs sure like so it's not like they're one of the worst teams in
that stretch but no no i know this isn't about the leafs being bad it's about being them being
bad when it counts like yeah i i tried to talk about this in the lfr the the leafs were rigid
in their system because they were good. They're, they're rigid because what we're doing has made
us good. And they lost sight of what makes them great. You need greatness to win the Stanley cup.
And all we've had for years now is a good team.

way of getting things like merch to our audience we were using a website before that did it all
paid us next to nothing and gave the worst quality the worst quality stuff you could possibly give so
for a while there you couldn't buy sdp merch but then jesse used shopify and jesse how did that
help us uh shopify is the best platform to build your e-commerce business that's not from a script
or anything that's just from my mouth the ease at which we sell merchandise on sdpn shop.ca is
because we built it on shopify it's it's a fantastic website and the ease of running it is
any any hockey fan who's not a website builder can build a website and that's what we did here
That's why we have a wonderful merch shop.
It is because of Shopify.
Now, Shopify is one of those, like as Jesse said, it powers 10% of all e-commerce in North
America and Shopify's global force behind Allbirds, Rothy's, Brooklinen, SDPN, and millions
of others.
Steve, your hands are very hot.
I know.
Thank you for holding my hand though.

Let's do a summation of the game pretty quickly here because ultimately it comes down to a
couple of things and we don't need to go period by period, I don't think.
First period, Boston outplays the Leafs.
End of story.
They did outplay the Leafs.
I think they were a better team.
They came out, and the Leafs were able to hold the fort.
Sammy played good goaltending.
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
Right?
He was their MVP of period one.
Mm-hmm.
Second period, Leafs come out, and they are strong the entire period.
Mm-hmm.
All the scoring chances that you could want, but here's the thing with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Man, the expected goals are great, but they never convert.
They do not convert.
They're bad at converting, and we've seen that based on the tweet that Jesse talked about
a few minutes ago.
Give Swayman his flowers.
He was great.
That save on Jake McCabe was unreal.
Noah Greger breakaway.
Noah Greger.
Connor Dewar.
Sorry, Connor Dewar breakaway.
Nye is getting a hold down on the breakaway there.
Okay, so you guys probably saw the replay
more than I did doing the stream.
Have I lost my mind
or did the ref not point to center ice for a penalty shot?
The ref did point to center ice for a penalty shot
is what I saw.
I saw the same thing.
I yelled to my wife.
it was like uh hey they just got a penalty shot yeah but one guy can make a decision i guess and
then they converge and they decide on something so and he was the guy that saw it too which is
what's crazy it's it's the same thing with the um with the uh stick whatever violation happened
earlier and on the hands i think it was the one on matthew nye's where the guy who was in the
corner said it was good but then the referee at the other end of the ice said it wasn't good and
it was a penalty uh i'm not sure and i and and elliot friedman even said in the second intermission
said in the second intermission,
the Leafs are probably
I would have called here.
They never got it.
No.
And listen,
we've gotten the whole series
without...
First game, Elliot?
Come on.
We've gotten the whole series
without bitching about the refs.
I thought the linesman,
there was a couple icings
last night where I was like,
guys,
like that is objectively
not an icing.
I'm...
They were...
No, no, no, no, no.
I'm going to say it.
You can disagree with it.
The linesman had
the game from hell last night.
They were terrible.
Here's where
i'm gonna the leafs were dumping it and not chasing all series long and there were a number
of times where i'm like yeah they didn't gain center but the refs gave them the little bit
fuck that don't care it's all that's that's a different game that's not last night yeah and
they were terrible last night we can't complain about the refereeing being any reason they lost
exactly i'm just and you know what here's the thing if you the refs you could argue did them
a favor because they were so bad on the power play that that five on five the least everybody
Nobody wants the Leafs to be on the power play.
What a waste of time.
What a fucking waste of time.
I was so thrilled.
So we'll get to that.
We're not going to talk about it now.
Great period two.
Great period two.
Great period three.
Nine minutes into period three specifically,
Nylander and Matthews hook up for a goal.
And it's a big...
Bertuzzi.
Bertuzzi definitely should have had a penalty on that.
Oh, baby.
Baby, baby.
If that was how the game...
Can you imagine?
If that's how the game ended,
it would have been boston fans would have been right that's what i'm saying we can't sit and
complain about any kind of calls in this game because it went both sides it did i was it did
that would have been delicious i would have got 11 years worth of nope good call out of the way
stop crying mad but as is clown emoji but as is so common uh with the leafs 90 seconds later
Literally 82 seconds later, Hampus Lindholm scores.
They're so bad.
And it's the Leafs' fourth line that's out there.
And by the way, I thought the Leafs' fourth line had been good.
Justin Brezeau and James Van Riemsdyk are the assists.
They are the Boston fourth line.
Dude, they were great in game seven.
They were fantastic.
They were great.
And so people are giving Keefe shit for putting out the fourth line,
and I get it.
It was Boston's fourth line.
But it was Boston's fourth line.
that's the one that scored and you know what the the leafs as as the series built like we talked
about matthew nye's game building throughout the series justin brazeau's game built throughout the
series he was spectacular last night he was using body position he's got touch around the net that
guy should have been a leaf uh and and we let him go for whatever reason he dangled the shit out of
morgan but more important oh my god more importantly here guys it's the the leafs do this
they score and it doesn't matter what line you throw out there there's just this lack of focus
you get when you score a goal in the nhl you get 30 seconds to feel good about it and then you got
to go back to playing hockey and the leafs have never in this era never understood that never
this has been a problem for eight years hindsight's 2020 and this would have been a psychotic
decision at the time but you know what i almost wish the leafs had done they score the goal
timeout i'm not kidding because would have been better than what they did you're asking for
something that would never never happen but but let me let me tell you why bruins fans have been
flooding my dms with not nice things and i know that's not most of your bruins fans it's just a
bunch of people who belong on a watch list but uh the reason i think is oh did i get under their
skin i got under their skin with the stuff that i said after game five is this what the boston
bruins do now is this what boston does now and they lose game five and you felt it they lose game
six and you felt it they change up their game seven morning schedule you feel it they were
rattled and they played a good game and the Leafs got the lead
all the energy is sucked out of that building and sucked out of the bench all of it
the moment
Hampus Lindholm scored that goal
ah they're winning the game
they're winning the game
you saw it in their faces you saw it in the whole building
you saw it everywhere they were winning the game
they had to bring out Bergeron pre-game
to try and get them all pumped up
and it didn't do anything
it didn't do anything
it wasn't enough
there was enough doubt in that
building last night that the Leafs
should have been able to pull off a win and when they had the bruins in the palm of their hand
they let them go the goal was not a great read from sammy is a fucking horrible goal and it is
a very it's the reason why sammy will not be back next year you can look at it and be like oh it was
the only goal he allowed and he was so good up to that point this is every game he was good he was
bad he should have had that one oh but he made that one it's every game enough what a stressful
way to live having this guy as your goalie whether his numbers look good or bad stressful i don't
need this in my life friggin the leaf should their helmet sponsor should be sage i'm sick of this guy
that's it that's enough thank you for your service thank you for game six versus tampa
get out on that goal there was a lot of chaos in front right before they scored it goes off the top
of the net it bounces around and in that moment you see Sammy swimming around and that's what
happens with Ilya Samsonov that's why you can't trust him to be your starting goaltender moving
forward he needs tighter lighter equipment in it looks like he's it looks like it doesn't fit
in these instances where there's chaos in front of the net and Boston's getting a whole bunch of
chances he loses himself in the moment and then there's a weak shot and he's too deep in his net
because he's been chaotic for the few seconds before that,
and then easy shot goes in.
You've got to mitten string his stick to his blocker.
It's unbelievable.
Despite playing a really good game,
and his play not being the reason they lost,
you can't go forward with this goalie
because you can't trust him in moments
where the pressure is really high.
And that goal, if we're going to say anything
and people are like, well, you can't blame Sammy,
I can actually blame him for that goal.
It went through him.
The goal shouldn't have gone in.
It should not have gone in.
It shouldn't have gone in.
And maybe they score another goal later in the period
or something like that, if that ever happened,
and they caught him out of position.
It was a better thing.
Whatever.
It's a two on nothing.
Whatever it was, the Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender
missed a save that he should have saved.
End of story.
And it hits off of his shoulder, too.
When he makes the save, it goes right off the side of his number there.
But he's so deep in the net.
Look how deep he is.
It just goes.
and so if you watch it from that on the i can show you this angle first because i want to i want to
show you where the shot comes from and how he moves back into his net as the shot uh is coming
so by the way what how does lynn home have this much space dude look at that it was it was a
fantastic fire the entire coaching staff fantastic play by lynn home to hop up in the play as there's
a whole bunch of chaos behind the net great great on to do that but sammy comes out to stop the shot
and as Lindholm is firing up the puck he actually moves back in towards his net you'll see he moves
back in yeah he he went he went he's like oh I'm too deep oh I gotta go out oh I gotta come back
in yes oh I gotta go down and that that's what I'm speaking to of the chaotic name nature of
Ilya Samsonov when there's a high pressure moment he seems to lose his positioning and let in an
easy goal and jesse the the leafs don't have lynn home because they're collapsed so far back
you're not actually doing anything trent frederick can tip this in and if there's a rebound brazzo's
right there what are you doing all right nobody has they're gonna kill you three different ways
here before that that shot they're all trying to fight for the puck behind the net so you have
the guys who's high though who's gregor why is gregor not high why is he not high covering off
why am i not high right now you got a gap up on these guys this is ridiculous and and the shot
from this angle like was he screened like is riley in his no it's pretty it's pretty clean
like you know there's i should say there are oh my god there are two guys in front also jesse i'll
say this why is he not standing yeah well he was as you can see when i showed you this angle he's
up oh sorry he's up and then he goes back down once the shot's taken so he's up look and then
he comes back down and this is the result there and it just goes right off the shoulder there
it's terrible it's a terrible goal it's not great it's a terrible goal it's not great
oh it's a terrible goal yeah look how much net oh my it bounces off the 35 and just goes right in
now i'll give the team yeah because he's not against the post like what that's goaltender
101 man that's not hard oh goaltending such a hard position to figure out okay that ain't hard
to watch sorry that it's hard to watch that ain't hard to figure out and let me say this the leafs
to their credit um fought on dude it's do you understand it's not even like based on where the
puck hits on sammy's numbers it's not even that great of a shot no of course no no no it's like
he's just trying to get it onto an area that might be open in the net it's an okay shot at
best like sometimes you see a guy rip it off the bar and you're like well damn this wasn't that
you friggin cost them and i think like when i look at elias amsonoff's goaltending i don't think it's
the reason they lost the entire game i don't think it's the reason they lost the entire season
series i think it's uh more of that is the offense you know if you can't score goals you can't win
at the end of the day but it's a group effort and this is a part of the reason i liken it to
the blue jays losing last season when they pulled burrios in when he was pitching perfectly fine
it's like okay the entire team he was pitching great and they would have allowed like one run
but if the team can't score two runs you can't win the game just so it's it's he he messed up
here samson off but the team also needs to to bail him out at some point and score some goals
despite playing 12 or sorry despite playing seven games the leafs had an nhl low 12 goals in the
first round also the goalie they started in this series went one in three how the hell did this
series go seven this happens so often when the Leafs play the Bruins like when it's it's so tight
and then when it's all said and done you look at the whole picture and you go how did this go seven
how did this it should have never gone seven like no they can't score and also they didn't get saves
and when they did get saves they won yeah credit to Joseph Wall for standing on his head for a
couple games and then the if we want to just mention that Joseph Wall's injury if you didn't
know it occurred on the final play of game six where they boston bruins scored on that didn't
matter on that cross crease play that is where he got injured and he woke up on that would have been
friday and he's like i'm not feeling great and then when he woke up on saturday he was feeling
even worse dude go what a what a shame go back right now and watch um the little blueprint clip
that the leafs put on social um after game six they give him the game puck uh matthew nize goes
this one goes to the real brick gives it to wall and wall goes let's get it done in boston and he
says it in this way where i'm like oh my god this kid is so cold i love this kid and now i watch it
in an entirely different light i i think he knew in that moment he at very least might not play
he didn't look very happy after the uh uh when normally he's a very like friendly guy
and he looked in the post game
with either Sean McKeds or Kyle Bukowskis.
I forget who it was with.
He didn't look as happy
as I would have expected after game six.
All right.
And it's time for our new segment,
Wendy's Fresh Takes.
And it's tough on a day like today
because things are, you know,
they're still too fresh, I would say.
Jesse.
Yeah.
If you had a fresh take
about the Toronto Maple Leafs,
what would it be?
A fresh, does it have to be something
that is not being
talked about a lot. Yeah, give it to me.
That this is a good thing
that they lost because now we
know what we have. Steve, what about you?
Steve is eating a fresh Wendy's
burger. Steve, could you potentially stop
eating that burger so we can have the
Wendy's because we're supposed to do Wendy's Fresh Tank.
This whole, it smells really good.
He's really going to town on this. What kind of
burger is that, Steve? Can you tell us? A good one.
Is that your fresh take?
It's a good one?
There's a lot of cheese in that.
That looks so good.
Steve is eating one of Wendy's fresh, never frozen, 100% Canadian beef patties.
Oh my gosh, that's amazing.
And I think making them square, by the way, makes them taste better.
A hundred percent.
Like there's no doubt in the world that square burgers are the best.
And they're fresh.
Like that's the whole thing, right?
Fresh under the grill, fresh off the grill.
Wendy's hot and juicy hamburgers just taste better.
Right, Steve?
Steve would definitely say that they taste better.
They would, yes.
Now, again, Wendy's is keeping it fresh
when you're craving it the most.
Open now until midnight or later.
Hours vary by location.
Again, Wendy's, check it out.
It's delicious.
That is your Wendy's Fresh Take.
It's getting near that time again
where the sun's out every single day,
a.k.a. the time of the year
the Leafs aren't playing anymore.
Sometimes a little too early,

register today at pmcfwalk.ca okay so let's talk about uh let's talk about this this last goal so
to fast forward through the third period william kneelander almost gets a goal just off of a bounce
uh off of one of the boston bruins uh against jeremy swayman with like a second that would
have been the coolest thing ever oh i forgot that moment would have been the greatest moment
in toronto maple leafs history forget all the toronto forget all the stanley cups awesome you
know uh they wouldn't yeah it would have been great uh and it was it was it was close watch
it back it's closer than you think and swayman with a big save yeah nora he saved their franchise
by making that same i also kind of thought after the third period that there was time remaining on
the clock and i was surprised the leafs didn't challenge that there was like he there was time
on the clock when swimming covered it and it was like 0.6 and they just kind of like because you
can delay the covering of the puck you can say oh he's he's gonna play it maybe so then you run out
the 0.6 you know it's it's whatever yeah i don't know i think you fight for inches um and you and
you say guys put put time back on the clock pull sammy pull sammy yeah get the sixth guy out there
um so let's fast forward to jesse i just sent this over but i think you know what jesse let's
use your tweet on it the i have all right sorry hold on i have the overview of the whole goal
and then i've got and then we want your tweet on as the marner part of it so in overtime about two
and a half minutes in um i have the goal highlights so we'll give me the goal highlights yeah yeah
we'll just run it from that so let's uh let's have a look here the leafs play it the leafs play
it poorly uh hot damn what a goal by the bruins oh is there a unreal goal you want the overhead
one do you want the back one is there an angle you want uh whatever you think looks good i trust you
all right we all saw it a bazillion times so we don't just spend too much time going through it
but i think there is you know your tweet on it jesse uh mitch marner getting beat yeah that
part we'll get to yeah so i like this angle because you can really see the play develop
it's one of my favorite like when you're going to a live hockey game i like watching from
a bit of above and not like down below because you can see plays unfold it's a beautiful set
play by the bruins you see is is marner the guy at the bench on the ice or is he the guy about to
hop on top line blue line so you'll see right blue line that's him right here that's mitch
yeah and this is so pasta he he knows the play that's coming he's doing his his wheel around
to gain speed through the zone he's coming up right through the neutral zone and he just blows
by everybody mitch is puck watching he's not watching his guy yeah so land home and the puck
pasta beats him and mitch can't catch him there no it's morgan so you in this in this angle you
really see the defenseman everybody's everybody's here collapsing on the puck mitch isn't watching
the guy behind him he's looking at the puck pasta still wheeling down the down down the ice and
right there the pass is thrown off the boards it's a perfect bounce you can see the puck coming up
there it's it's thrown right there it's coming back up and pasta's timing it and there's a lot
of argument i see being made that elia samson off in this moment this was the particular screenshot
i saw where it's he's closest to the puck if he trusts himself to just take his stick poke it out
it's not a play that pasta can make jerry d was kind of making that point and someone was also
saying like if you're riley take the penalty like yep if you're riley too you are in a position to
make this here just throw your stick it's it's a horrendous way to lose it's a beautiful play
by the Bruins but a lot of uh a lot of standing watching around I want to say that Kelly Rudy
was right after the game when he said I cannot believe Samsonov did come out did not come out
and play that yeah and he is absolutely right there are two people what I saw one guy on Twitter
today trying to say that Nylander was to blame for this somehow because he stopped skating he's
oh great back check i'm like no his job's to stay high uh he's on zaka no nylander he's on zaka and
that's what he needs to be doing his body language might not be something you like but that's just
kind of how he stands around on the ice he's in perfect position yes he's he's f2 he's in perfect
position they're covering the middle of the eye needs to be bent a little bit but yeah but
knows what he's doing tavaris knows what he's doing riley everyone else i mean they just didn't
know what was coming and it happened so fast but here's the thing steve if you play smart defense
as a habit no i know this doesn't happen no and they don't have it as a habit they don't and so
let's steve jesse let's iso on mitch and i and again it's become a bit of a meme where it's like
mitch mitch mitch but there's a reason for that and it's because and there's a few things i want
to talk about with mitch in this series that that i have asked since montreal which is is this player
a playoff player and most of it from people comes down to scoring and rightfully so that's what he's
known for but let's have a look at this play so the the camera iso is it's funny because the camera
iso where you identify mitch and you see that pasta blue by him is the pasta iso so you follow
the pasta iso iso cam and you see that in his in his getting the puck off of the boards and this
terrific set play he goes right by the back of mitch marner and so as you saw in the overhead
he does his little wheel through the ice and then as he's coming through mitch marner's right in
front of him and he ducks on by and he's also just getting on the ice like i it's it's i'm not i'm
not trying to let the leafs off the hook here that's not what i'm trying to do what i'm trying
to do is highlight how perfect of a play like yes the bruins just executed executed real well
and you know why you're right he's puck watching you know why that you know why is that they
executed well because the leafs do not as keith said the the game plan is to let the leafs beat
themselves and this stuff is the stuff that drives me crazy because i can tell you that anybody else
any coach would be like hold them up it's pasta knock he didn't see him he didn't know this was
happening but that's at no point worse jesse at no point did mitch well like right here he should
maybe know that pasta is coming back around him because he's looking at the puck coming this way
and pasta is going around the back but at no point did he identify that this was taking place
it's it's a real shame like by the time pasta hits his stride marner is like just getting his stick
set in his hand at this point at halfway through the ice it's over like the game is kind of over
in this instance if that puck bounces perfectly off the boards which it did now i want to i want
to I want to go here because I think it's important we talk about this um so uh CJ's
article obviously it's time for the you know the Shanna Shanna plan to end probably end of an era
for a lot of of of this and I'll run you through the quotes again Nylander look I don't think we
have an issue with the core Tavares we're right there it's this very small difference Matthews
i feel like we say that every year he gets it and here's where we didn't get quotes
mitch marner morgan riley both assistant captains i know this city loves these players
i know that for the longest time until the first contract negotiation
mitch marner could do no wrong i know that even now morgan riley can do no wrong i'll tell you
that that was wrong and they should have they should have the their their their captaincies
stripped you cannot you need to as the Leafs set an example if you're going to be a leader in
Toronto you have to be a leader 100% of the time unless there was some sort of injury like it's
like oh he can't because he's in terrible tremendous pain physically can't physically
can't walk out of the dressing room because he needs treatment right now in which case he's
probably on a stretcher to the hospital. Let's be honest. If you are a leader in this city,
you have to be a leader every day that you put on the jersey. In fact, you have to be a leader
every day that you don't. And that's not to diminish charitable efforts. That's not to
diminish all the great things for the community and the signing of autographs for kids or whatever.
But your first job as a captain or an alternate captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs is to be
accountable and be accountable not just for yourself but for the rest of the team because
the rest of the team is supposed to follow your example when you choose not to step out in front
of the media you choose not to be a leader and therefore you should not be an alternate captain
and i love both of these players and i'm saying this and people are going to call me crazy for
the morgan riley one but he's just as wrong in this situation now morgan riley didn't have a
great series i don't think but the guy that i really want to talk about is the one that's on
everybody's mind this morning which is mitch marner unacceptable efforts in three and four
games three and four i thought mitch was much better in five and in six but you know he wasn't
a dominant player but he was a positive contributor and last night and i remember saying it to natalie
and then kelly ruda brought it up in the in the in the intermission mitch marner had a straight
shot sideways to the net and instead of driving the net yeah like i've been saying forever drive
the net mitch he goes around the net and tries a funny little backhand pass but this swayman
giveaway this happens every single time mitch marner touches the puck and there's another
instance where he he feeds a pass to joel edmondson and he does a whole bunch of dipsy doodles
through the neutral zone and it takes forever for him to get this puck to joel edmondson and
eventually he gets the puck there and he makes this shot and then it just right into the middle
of Swayman but like this is what Mitch Marner is and I think he's stealing money from the Toronto
Maple Leafs because what is the money for the money is to show up it's to perform it's to be
the captain it's to be a leader and he does none of those things he's not a 10.9 million dollar
player what did you just say about his game uh perimeter perimeter player he was a great
contributor great contributor no he was a good contributor good contributor right not great but
not great he's the least in a nutshell he's good not great it's the madman quote that's what the
money is for and the money for him is to show up and be great and he has never done that so
he's not worth the money that he has he's not worth the position he has on the team
you can isolate having the a you like you're so right about that what he has been billed as he
has never lived up to it and it's time to move off of that now you can isolate a game or a play
like i was at the game uh where mitch marner in pre-covid against boston blocked a shot at the
end of the game game 3 2019 and he was unbelievable that was great you can iso that game you can iso
was it game 2 versus tampa game 2 or game 3 versus tampa the first three games versus tampa last year
real good lots of points and maybe that game 2 against florida uh it was game 4 where they won
Oh, game four.
Why do I get that mixed up?
Regardless, outside of that, let's see what he's done.
And I'm going to give you some stats to back up Jesse.
And by the way, if you're a fan and you're not a fan of the Leafs,
imagine your player, your best player, your second highest paid player
with stats like these.
Sorry, third, because he's slightly behind.
Soon to be fourth.
And asking, by the way, he is asking for,
he'll be asking for a raise starting July 1st.
This is this player.
this is a stats from mike stevens of the staff and graph podcast who i was talking to last night
this morning you will not believe what i'm about to tell you i probably will the goal in game four
i think we will believe the goal in game four mitch the the the through the the legs goal
yeah put the leafs down only three to one yeah it was a nice goal yeah all-star goal shelby what
what is it what's the simpsons it's like isn't there like uh oh no what's it's what oh and chris
paul cuts the lead to 42 yeah it was one of those it was crazy that is the first time he's ever
scored a goal from game four or beyond in a series in his entire career like what are we doing here
has now i could be i i told mike i'm like did you double check that and he's like he's like well
yeah and he's like well now you're making me doubt it i'm like okay and then here's the here's the
other one i'm almost positive mitch marner scored in game six in 2018 see there you go well 2018
yeah oh damn that's there's been a while you still said with any time okay well then fine
correct fine then since 2018 well do you want me to check please okay here's one thing we do know
in game fours and beyond he's played 12 games he has six points all of them assists except for the
one goal in 2018 guys this player we kept asking we did it before the tampa series last year we did
it before the tampa series before that because the series before that had been montreal and it
really highlighted the fact that this player may not have a game that translates to the postseason
and that's exactly it it's in the regular season there is more room the way mitch marner plays and
he can put up 80 85 to 99 points in the regular season but when it gets to the playoffs he holds
the puck for too long he's still trying to play that game and it doesn't work anymore no and you
can't pay a guy 10.9 million dollars for the games that matter like it's ridiculous that they're
still paying him to this point because kyle dubas would have moved him ahead of his no movement
clause kicking in shanny didn't want to move and shanny didn't let him do it so he fired his ass
so and if they would have moved on from this player who can't perform in the playoffs here's
something that you should know because i'm getting a lot of bullshit tweets from the media out there
and i love i love all these people this is not uh this is not sounds like i'm not taking a shot
the shot is that it's this is lazy okay here's here's my what you're going to hear a lot of as
well i went on cap friendly and i found out that mitch marner has a no move clause boy the leafs
sure painted into a corner now it's time to lay the cards on the table Utah's a corner
uh Jonas Siegel if not after the Montreal series it felt like it was time for Marner after last
season he said all the right things about wanting to be a leaf to stay a leaf but throughout this
past season he's looked a lot like someone who wasn't enjoying all that becomes with being with
the leaf the pressure the scrutiny the criticism the relentless demand for more Marner's poor start
to the season was notable for how joyless he appeared how devoid of enthusiasm and energy
he might just be he might be just as ready for a change as the Leafs are he was prepared
for the possibility last summer I'm gonna repeat the last sentence it's he was prepared for the
possibility last summer if you don't think that this player will wave his no move clause you're
out of your mind don't listen to any of the guys because listen it's not like we haven't heard
these rumors too we there's plenty that we hear that we can't say i'll say it now i've heard
multiple times that this player would be would have been more than ready to move on last summer
this year he's got more control this year and this is where i think shanahan has to forfeit his job
because this mistake is enormous.
Kyle Dubas was ready.
And yes, I know Kyle made a power play for it, whatever.
You still could have brought in true living
and you still could have moved Marner.
So put Kyle Dubas to the side.
But Kyle did admit publicly that it was time.
Shani didn't believe it was time.
And so despite the unparalleled regular season success
of the Shanaplan era, and it has been,
you can't say it hasn't been.
Regular season success.
Regular season success.
Underscore that.
It's been the greatest run of regular season hockey Leaf fans have probably ever had.
And that's left us so happy.
We're thrilled.
Listen to my voice.
Guys, this player is ready to go.
But the problem for Brad, for Brendan, if he's still here, and for anybody else in that management group that is still left over from the Dubas era.
And by the way, that's all of them.
None of them were let go.
Except for Spezza.
Spezza.
Yes, Spencer's there and then Doan's in.
Who took his ball and ran over to Pittsburgh.
I'm going to go Pittsburgh and miss the playoffs.
I will tell you that this player is probably ready to go
and that moving him with a no-move clause is not going to be the issue.
The issue is going to be where.
And for anybody that's like, well, the Leafs might not get what they want.
Guys, $11 million against the cap.
Why is it?
How many times does Chris Johnson, how many times does Elliott Friedman, these guys who
really know what they're talking about, right?
The best minds in the game in the media side.
How many times does a general manager, an agent, or somebody in the league have to tell
them and then them tell everybody else, which is what's going on, right?
That cap space is more important than draft picks and it's more important than getting
somebody back.
ladies and gentlemen if you get nothing and they won't they're going to get something back and it's
going to be good if if if this trade when this trade happens because i think it's happening
when this trade happens the least will get something good back and they'll get the more
important thing they're going to get cap space they're going to they're going to have to spend
it wisely which is where calgary flames fans have a lot of lot to say about your living it might be
the best thing that ever happened to mitch it might be oh yeah this might be you know sometimes
relationships run their course this is a good person who has um who has done charitable charity
is great with the kids does all these things that you would want an athlete to do but sometimes
you're just like you know what i'm tired of being here i'm tired of the way all your breath smells
let's not talk out of both sides of our mouth let me say this we have a show that you are the co-host
of called agent provocateur adam how did agent provocateur come to be uh i called or i i wanted
to have i saw alan on tim and sid i thought he should have a show um cj ran into him at the
stanley cup finals uh one of the stanley cup finals in tampa i think was the covid one or
the post-covid one and said hey i got a guy who wants to call you do you mind if he does but even
before that you said Steve I have an idea and you ran it by me and what did I tell you you tell me
what you said I can't remember I have a terrible memory Adam you're out of your mind why did I say
you were out of your mind what was the most recent conversation we had had on the podcast about Alan
Walsh about the the the sword the sword the sword thing so for those of you who don't know
Alan Walsh posted a picture of
Marc-Andre Fleury during the playoffs
with a sword
through Fleury's back there was blood
it was a great picture
and the sword said DeBoer on it
because DeBoer
was Marc-Andre Fleury's coach
and what I said during that show
is
you know what we can all act like
Alan's going rogue here
he works
for Marc-Andre
if Mark Andre didn't agree with this if he wanted it taken down it would get taken down
and it was up for a long time and that was a point that I stuck to
Austin Matthews signed a five-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs February 5th 2019
Darren Ferris spoke to the Toronto Star February 5th 2019 that's that would be uh Mitch's agent
for anybody that doesn't know the same damn day said that's probably the best contract in the
national hockey league said Darren Ferris the agent whose client list includes Maple Leaf star
Mitch Marner there's no team-friendly discount there and he goes on to say nobody else is taking
a discount and now you're asking Marner to take one again it's nonsense Ferris said Mitch already
did them a favor on his entry level deal by not having to pay out certain bonuses schedule a
bonuses yeah fart the reality is he didn't do them a favor uh he he got darren ferris got
lou amorello beat darren ferris in the negotiations that's what happened this is how he ends the
article it's a dave fest chuck article you can look it up mitch will get what mitch is due
but as far as the Maple Leafs it's up to them how they value him if it works out with them
it works out Ferris said we'll see at the end of the year what their position is and whether
they're motivated to sign Mitch or not it's totally up to them you said that we went in on
it at the time you can find our podcast from that day but let me bring it up again because
you forget a lot in half a decade your agent you little care bear your agent ruined your reputation
permanently in this city and in a huge swath of this fan base that day
And you had the power to stop them.
I don't care if you agreed with the message, didn't agree with the message.
That's what your agent's job is.
It's that day, the same day, your friend, maybe, weird way to treat a friend.
The same day your friend signs that deal, that bullshit comes out in the Toronto Star and you drag it through the summer and there's tweet after tweet from person after person, I'm going to get what I'm going to get.
show me the money all that and what have you done have you upheld your end of the bargain
since signing that deal because listen this is just what's good for business here he's got a
year left and I have no interest in going through this experience again with his agent and the camp
and the player trying to go oh I got nothing to do with it oh fuck off enough I have no interest
in going through that again with this camp i have no interest in the dms i have no interest in the
the media bullshit it's time let's move on the lack of scoring in the playoffs do you have any
interest in that continuing oh you know what a lot more of that no that's great no that's great
i want that too okay i have to be on why do you want this like fans no no no i don't know why no
that's my point is i don't want dude you very visibly hated here yeah and i think that's why
adam's correct in that it's going to be a parting of the way he wants out guys that's my opinion
i'm of the opinion i've heard enough he's ready to go and i think him not speaking to the media
last night remember what he how he was let's just back it up here for you wanted to speak to the
media the day your friend signed a contract extension where were you last night steve let
me just six weeks ago you want to go off on something go off on this six weeks ago he comes
back from injury how is he uh i don't remember you guys the way you guys speculated on it oh
oh well there's a lot of a lot of questions about but he's blocking out the noise
he's blocking out the noise so this is my thing this this dude is gonna go
deaf from how high he
has the noise cranked up.
You know what? I always think
the media stuff and the fan stuff and the
pressure with Toronto is overblown.
It is true that some people can't do
it. Yeah.
That's enough. Honestly,
go somewhere else and win a cup. He might
win a cup. He's going to be great wherever he goes.
And real estate in Seattle or
Utah is a lot cheaper than Toronto.
Your money's going to go further there
if you want to buy a nice house. Seattle's
seattle's high but it's not it's not it's not toronto high it'll go further if you're trying
to buy a nice real estate in his head is dirt cheap i have to tell you um the the reality is
is mitch marner in my opinion what i hear not coming back and i think if i would like to know
how the organization felt about the way he started the season because he you know you you read the
Jonas clip right so I'll read it to you again
Marner's poor start to the season was
notable for how joyless he appeared
devoid of enthusiasm and energy which is Marner's
game that's what he could he have
started slow because he had to work his way
back into full hockey
playing ability because he took some of the summer
to not train hockey
I don't know
I don't know I would like to know I'm not
going there I would like to know
what I would like to know how
the organization feels about that I don't
know how they do.
And listen, Marner was a point of game.
He just wasn't playing well.
And so this is where...
He gets his cookies, man.
You go, it's a parting of the ways.
Great player.
Great player.
Great player in the regular season.
There will be teams lined up
out the door to get him,
even at that cap hit.
Now, I will ask this question.
Somebody asked me this on a stream,
Vancouver-Nashville stream,
when the games were boring,
which was most of the games.
What's his extension look like?
And I kind of said, listen, I don't understand.
I don't know what the value is right now,
but I don't see how this player gets a raise,
not just here, but anywhere.
I know they'll be looking for one.
And if somebody trades for him
with the intention of extending him,
then they'll have to pay a raise.
But I don't know market value-wise
how a guy who we've seen
cannot drive his own line in the playoffs.
We've seen him not be able to do that.
patrick kane the reason patrick kane made 10 million bucks before anybody else is because
patrick kane on his own could drive a line and that's hard to do as a winger he wasn't even the
best darren ferris client on his line darren yeah it was max domey um uh the centerman usually is
the driver of play if a winger can do it then they're worth a lot of money and patrick kane
could and patrick kane could do it in the playoffs and mitch martyr cannot dude and sheldon loading
up putting austin with mitch no why why just put out there with matthew what do we do the
the only matthews kneelander it's right there no the the domey line with marner was working
yes when he threw austin in there instead of domey it fell flat every time it was it was
working like bad things weren't happening generally when they were on the ice but there
was a little bit of perimeter merchant going on there oh yeah that's what i was talking about
Like when I'm talking about the Leafs just running roughshod, you know, around the perimeter and Domi standing there with the puck and no one's in front.
And it happened to Mitch a few times.
He's standing there with a puck and no one's in front.
And Tyler's like, I'm trying, boys.
Right.
And he's the only one.
Yeah, I shouldn't say it wasn't enough.
It's working in the sense that it was decent hockey, but it didn't produce results.
I don't think that's implied because nobody could produce results outside of William Nylander.

An unexpected devastating event.
The weather.
What about, here's what's worse, an expected devastating event.
Wow.
No, no. I believed. I believed. Yeah, I believed. And they ripped my heart out.

The reality of it all is that that player is gone.
We know why Keith will be gone.
um i'll tell you what i've heard on on shanahan uh my belief is that there's at least because the
board is essentially three voting members i know omers is in there now but there's a belief that
one of the three is ready to move on him now and that was based on targets sent at the beginning
of the year because believe it or not leafs internally do have targets it's almost like
nhl 24 hey you have to make the second round otherwise in gmo'd you're fired one of my goals
was to beat the montreal canadians in our first matchup of the year and we lost oh no i didn't
get the 40 000 bonus ah you see so they have these internal things my belief is that uh one
third of the board is already ready to move uh they need two-thirds support and so it's a question
of whether the other two will and i think the i think there's one third that will not and there's
one third that's a bit of a wild card but my bet without knowing is that they're ready and if they
ever won the cup mlse could buy the moon yeah and this is the point right like people are like oh
they must be so happy with the regular season success you know what they're not happy with
all the deals that they're going to have to call monday morning and say hey i know we had deals in
place for rounds two three and four uh potentially even two and three at this point because you know
you plan ahead and they're gonna have to cancel all that money i'll tell you this about maple
leaf sports and entertainment for all of their perceived lack of issues the organization wants
to win and why does the organization wants to win because they can make more money so much more
money how about all the make goods in broadcasting well that's that's yeah it was one arm of the
mlse business but adam you outlined it a couple weeks ago about the the desperate need from mlse
for a lease playoff run here because they need it you have the raptors who were not good for
the entire season especially the back half and people just gave up on that team in zero playoff
dates now with the leafs you get only three and they're banking on so much more you have the argos
who have never been a revenue driver you have tfc who's never been the hugest revenue driver for mlse
no tfc loses money the marlies lose money tfc loses money the argonauts obviously lose money
well what about rogers i bet they're happy with the jays for brendan shanahan his his goal here
from the top down was put a competitive product on the ice that can go a couple rounds maybe win
a thing one day and boost our revenues boost our brands and have the team win and he failed at that
And I don't know how you keep your job after just a decade of failure.
The board likes him.
And clearly they do because they sided with him over Dubas last year.
The one thing I'll say, though, guys, is you have just approved a $2 million raise for a player that was making 11 and a half.
So or is it 13.25?
Whatever Matthew's going to make next year.
By the way, worth it.
I don't have an issue with that deal.
He's got 69.
Nylander.
you've just approved a four and a half million dollar raise for a player that's making seven
will now make 11 and a half yeah again under no issue and goals matthews led the team in points
per game while looking half dead but but this is a corporation so look at it a corporation thing
okay we're gonna spend six million dollars on these two guys and best guess what they're our
highest performing guys they're they're the team's most marketable superstars and i say that
matthews neilander one two and marketability okay it was mitch until his agent fucked it up now you
got now you got um uh you've got a player that is is going to be out of contract in 16 months
and you're telling me you're going to come to me as a board as a business person
that bringing this player back
and keeping this team together
at more expense to the organization
is a good idea.
Explain to me how that's possible.
And this is where I go back to,
I don't think there's another choice for Shanahan
other than forfeiture of his job.
And the reason I say that is,
okay, yeah, the Leafs are so, so much better.
Shanahan did a great job
uh making sure they didn't cut corners and development and he did a lot of good things
he did a lot of good things let's not pretend like he wasn't here for a decade and did he did
exclusively nothing he completely transformed the organization they were a joke i know people
call the leafs a joke now you have no idea the professionalism the way he honored the past he
did a lot of really good things the logo redesign even oh spectacular he did amazing amazing things
please don't whoever's new please don't touch it except give me the green saint pat's jersey i
swear to God. My point is, it's time. And then we know Keefe is as good as gone. And we know,
and here's, so you're going to see a lot of reports about the Toronto Maple Leafs in the
coming weeks. There's already one out there that they're interested in Craig Berube. I would
suggest that if they go and hire Craig Berube, it's not because they're interested now. They
have not even begun that process and so anybody suggesting that right now i would i would call
that into question because uh craig berube is not signing with the senators because he's waiting for
the leafs job we know that i mean everyone is going to be planting some sort of rumor that
they're involved in of course they are stations of course you get their bread up of course get
the money up my my point in all this is that you cannot as a board responsibly go forward
with re-signing this player or bringing Shanahan back.
To me, you have a better argument of bringing Shanahan back
than you do of Mitch Marner.
And I think, again, it goes back to Mitch wants,
I think Mitch is ready to go.
I don't think that he,
I don't think that that's necessarily a bad thing for either side.
No.
Sometimes it's just time.
And spread this money out.
You know, this one is far more difficult to do, JT.
oh that's that's going to happen too but that's that is for sure going to happen
i don't think either player is worth the money and tavaris i mean
this we always knew how this deal was going to age yes because the time to win the cup was 19 20
and 21 we've said that a million times yeah we all knew how this deal was going to age
marner is a lot closer to an 11 million dollar player than jt is and i don't know how on earth
you move it um it's only one year oh and the real dollars are paid you move that deal you move that
deal to a team that's trying to they've paid it out that deal's done just it's gonna be like as
soon as july 1st hits that deal is going to be like 900 grand yeah if uh if the team cares about
the actual money that's being paid out on july 1st john tavarez will get a seven million dollar
signing bonus and then the actual money that needs to be paid out for the season of 24 25 will
be 910 000 look for a tavaris trade dude july 2nd yeah he's still a really good player if you have
the cap room which not many teams do but if you have the cap room you're getting a 60 70 point guy
25 goal guy for like free and you're if you're the least you're retaining on that cap hit because
it's quite a bit much for one team to absorb i would retain on that and you're retaining what
like clingberg's contract that's going out you know it's going to be available so you're doing
that plus it's not i shouldn't even say your dad because you're dumping half of john devara so
you're only keeping them on for half of that so it's not it's not like an immovable deal i think
if there's a trade out there that's value you kind of do it it's also uh more difficult with jt um
he's got three kids you know what i mean and and like mitch has a full no move jt has a full no
move but like that that complicated you know what i look at easier to get to convince to wave it
now i ideally if if tavaris is dealing to end this year i'd be like sign him up at five million bucks
i'm fine yeah uh but oh i'd take him back but the leafs and i love tavaris i don't think he can be
captain anymore uh but he has always always done the right thing as captain of the leafs he's been
the best captain they've had since mats and uh and i i have i have nothing but respect for this
player it's a short list it's a short list but i but i will say he that means that means something
though um dion is the list you skipped over one guy yeah because they fucking refused to name a
captain for half a decade because they sucked it's just funny what a messy organization here's what
i look at here's what i look at you know something i keep an eye on for brian burke said in his book
by the way sorry adam that they considered naming jamal mayers captain i know i know that's i know
that's what a mess that's what a mess where we were at anyway sorry here's what i'm looking at
okay first off the leafs are not a team that's afraid to trade within their division there's
three teams i'm looking at right now oh another thing sorry if the leafs are going to move on
from tavaris it's going to be probably they're going to try not to retain as much maybe maybe
they retain 25 i mean if carlson got moved and his retention was like 20 of 100 point season yeah
but you can move to varus and the team that sticks out to me the most that needs a guy like this
that has the cap room that's one year commitment and probably signs him up for longer who do you
think i'm talking about you said in the division not in the division there is one in the division
but this is not the one no there's two in the division my default answer for the next several
months for everything is going to be utah no chicago oh because they are bringing guys in
to pad the lineup which has been atrocious outside of bedard they're gonna get probably
a top three guy this year unless the lottery balls go bonkers and you need a good leader
who's been there to bring these guys up.
It puts Tavares in a major city center.
It puts...
That's not bad.
It probably gives them a pretty good reason
to re-sign him afterwards.
Remember, Corey Perry and Nick Foligno
got $4 million a piece from the Blackhawks last year.
They want players like Tavares.
And I think he's a perfect fit
for a guy who can take a lot of the crappy responsibilities
off of Conor Bedard
and teach him some of the defensive ropes i i like that real gonna be real tough for him to
win a cup there and he doesn't have one well that might not be and listen by the way if you have a
no move clause and a team wants to trade you trust me when i tell you there are so many ways for
teams to make things so uncomfortable that you'll you'll accept a no trade trust me happens all the
time never gets reported trust me uh trust me bro is what i'll say unless it comes out in brian
burke's book uh buffalo sabers are another team i look at and i think i would rather die well i
don't i don't i don't actually care because all i care about is the leafs getting better no on
principle i'd rather die see i don't give a shit about principle this is principle is what costs
you principle not trading with your division costs you the other team i look at is the detroit red
wings also rather i think they need a center uh i think a guy like again you get to varus at six
million bucks guys you get tovaris it's six and a half that's a great contract for that player
where's the option where i die and listen they're not going to get much back but they get the cap
space back and that's the key marner i think you get real assets plus cap tovaris i think you have
to retain significant probably 20 25 losing both of them at once i mean like listen we're all mad
now you do have to replace that that's why they get paid the big yeah that is the job oh you know
what steve you know what you're right let's take the easy route and keep them all together no
yep no this is where i you know what i get so that's such a good point so next year if they
get worse i mean we'll be able to criticize well hey you made stupid decisions why did you do that
they have to make the attempt yeah you got to do something different
if you get worse you get worse you can't keep doing this yeah we're asking for jason dickinson
and seth jones 50 retained for john devaris i am least it's different i'm all done yo i'm all done
with with the the argument that i see out there on twitter time and time again well if you lose
this guy what do you replace him with anything i don't know man i'm not a gm i'm a i i run a
podcast network with my two business partners and best friends that's what i do you know who gets
paid a million dollars plus two million three million dollars to run the leafs who brad true
living you know who gets six or seven million brendan shanahan guys you get paid that much
money because it's your job to figure it out so instead of going well who would they get
listen you can take your reddit trades and and that's totally cool enjoy doing that
but the reality is that you have to put as the fan the responsibility on the people in charge
who are making the money i don't know what the problem solve is that's your job what i'm telling
you is you need to admit the problem and you must move on from it one thing i'll never forgive
brandon shanahan for and i'll talk about this in the in the video when he's ultimately fired
it's coming he had 10 years he had over a decade to assemble a leafs team
that looked remotely like him one of the greatest power forwards to ever play 600 goals huge would
fight would be the biggest son of a bitch to play against played in some of the most violent
hateful rivalries of all time and he assembled this
did you i i think his biggest weakness
is he only saw his career through his own eyes god i wish you could have seen it from the tv
this team plays nothing like you Brendan look at the success you had on the ice
and then you come to with a theory what was crazy about it is he knew what it took to win
and then he comes to the Leafs and employs a theory that's antithetical to the way he won
which is we're just going to get penalties we're going to get penalties call instead of fighting
back we're going to turn the other cheek and we're going to get the call and guess what they
didn't get any of the calls and when they did get the calls they couldn't effing score anyway
their power play more than once has looked like crap rolling into the playoffs
and this coaching staff by the way not just sheldon they're all gone barbecued oh my gosh
they're gone they might hold on to one or two of the assistants but like they're barb no hold on
wait the review staff that's the guys are you keep we're not talking about the two guys on
the bench next to keith i'm talking about the five guys that they have keith they have so many
guys offensive coordinator defense coordinator power play and penalty kill gone and you know
what mike van ryan didn't like your game when you were here i thought he was actually decent
i really liked you when you're here yeah his injuries got him i just don't like you as a
head coach when he was a leaf as a coach assistant when mike van ryan was a leaf he wasn't mike van
ryan the leaf as much as he was not brian mccabe the leaf yeah because uh that was his job to be
not brian he was good he was good there's just a bad team i i think i think ultimately we know
i think the fans know what's going to happen here and i might i just really really want to
emphasize don't let them tell you that it can't happen all the leafs are in a hard spot
oh i'm sorry well that that gives them you know what then that's great la you know what
it was was it too hard for them oh i can't imagine that must be hard dude it's the show
it's the show it's supposed to be hard it's the national hockey league it's the best league in
the world nothing comes easy the reigning stanley cup champions have to play game seven
because they forced it.
It's a hard lead.

I think for Keith Pelley coming in,
he officially took office,
took his job, his role on April 1st, I believe it was.
This loss for him makes it easier
because you have a clear outline here
of what you have in terms of the players
and what they can do
and in terms of the upper management,
brendan shanahan downwards of how they performed of 10 years they've been giving this runway and
for him you know what you have so i think it'll be easy for keith pelly to come in and crack skulls
and make a whole bunch of changes because the results aren't there i agree and i think jesse
we would have been kicked off the podium by now i think that uh i think that they and i said this
last week i think that they've been interviewing candidates in case this happened it happened
so now all of those candidates who knew hey this job might not be available if the leafs go three
rounds deep here now know that it is and what what creates the inertia is all of these candidates
going back to keith and saying good word hey keith like i really have a plan here that could
really work and what keith and if she if brandon comes into keith's office which he will and he'll
say hey keith we have a plan that we believe will work what you're if you're keith pelly am i going
to take the known quantity i know i know that this team does not do well under this person
or am i going to take a chance magic beans pick my guy who i believe can do this and go listen
i'm the ceo i need to make ceo decisions can i ask you guys a question yeah of course about
somebody who we haven't talked a lot about because he just got here but he has a history
in this business and we've seen how he moves and operates brad treliving do you trust him
based on what he did in calgary as the guy to make over the roster in toronto
i don't hate some of the decisions he's made i do hate some of the decisions he's made
he wouldn't be my first pick.
They need stability in net.
I think they moved in the right direction on D
in terms of getting tougher.
They got to be better at moving the puck.
And up front, you have enormous changes to make.
It's weird.
like you know true living built the flames through defense and he prioritized goaltending by giving a
huge contract to jake markstrom none of his decisions in his first year of building the
leafs look anything like the calgary flames i think it i think it's a little unfair to be honest
though when he was brought in i think it's well yeah i think it's i think uh it's a lot of duct
tape i like it's a lot of if you look at through this year madam uh i like some of the moves uh i
could i could tell you for i could tell you for sure that max domey's representatives multiple
times during the dubas era contacted the toronto maple leafs directly and said this player wants
to be here darren ferris yeah i can tell you that not not just darren ferris though other people
within max's camp said what would it take to make max a toronto maple leaf and the dubious
administration the entire time said not interested thank you and i think max domi was the signing of
the off season for the toronto maple leaves this guy plays quickly he's got incredible vision
his feet never stop there are awards to max domi's max domi's game but guess what at three
million bucks find me a player where you don't penguins fans you're you're one of the biggest
fan bases we got you've been with us the longest i have a soft spot for the penguins
i'm fighting demons right now yeah i am fighting fucking demons right now here in that shit
and i am fighting for my life that goku and vegeta are bouncing off the insides of my skull right now
Max Domi was really good, I think, throughout the entire season.
It was fun to see him.
When he got off David Camp's wing, he was fun to see him grow.
Because at the beginning of the season,
there were struggles with how he was deployed in the lineup.
And as the season went on,
Sheldon Keefe understood what kind of player he had,
which was a very good playmaker.
And if you put him in positions where he's able to make plays,
where he's not just dying on the wing somewhere,
he's a very effective player.
And if they can get him back at a small amount or a reasonable amount, that's somebody who needs to be a Leaf for a long time.
Dude, and the way Nye's evolved.
Hold on, hold on.
That line, jail forever, that line.
So let's go through some of the other true living acquisitions, okay?
So we look at Tyler Bertuzzi, which was the most expensive one.
One year deal.
Listen, let's be honest.
Tyler Bertuzzi did not start last offseason going, I want to be a Toronto Maple Leaf.
Doesn't mean that he hates Toronto.
I just don't think he ever had any ambition to play here.
It was very much Taylor Hall.
Yeah, with Sabres.
Yeah, last person at the dance.
Let's go to the center.
And Tyler came in, and he wants a long-term deal.
His next deal, he wants six, seven, eight years.
Don't blame him.
And he was snakebit for the majority of the year.
The advanced numbers were looking really good on him,
and all of a sudden, hit just before the All-Star game,
and you see the Tyler Bertuzzi that we wanted to see.
and i think people are looking at his stat line in this playoff series and going oh this player
didn't show up i think you're out of your mind i think this player took some dumb he direct okay
fine but he directly challenged along with max brad marchand who who honestly wasn't he was a
factor but he wasn't great in this series he was brad marchand had two games where it was just all
brad like i thought i'd say one i'd say one second one um games i'd say four or four where
he dominated yeah and the other one where he scored the uh game winning goal is that three
where we were there two or is it it was three we were there at three i didn't think he was that
good in that game though yeah but i think he scored the goal up where it mattered my point
is that brad marchand in the previous series with the leafs was dominant he he wrecked them whether
they won or lost he always won the mental game yeah he didn't win that in this series and i think
a large part of that is due to tyler bertuzzi he was avoiding the mess yes he usually caused the
distraction he's avoiding the mess at this stage in his career and and and so and i and i give
bertuzzi a ton of credit for that i like that signing a lot uh the clingberg thing okay it
didn't work and sat on it brad marshall in game three had two goals one assist maybe that's the
game i'm thinking game four he had a goal in the assist i thought both games like okay he showed
up where it matters so put up the points i would just compare and contrast that with 18 and 19 where
he was a fucking menace the entire time and it just the bar's a little higher the leafs the entire
series the but he's 36 now okay so but but as it pertains to bertuzzi i think bertuzzi did a great
job stopping it people gave brad a tough time about klingberg early in the year you know we
talk about there's a lot of people tweeting about the fact that all the leafs needed a puck moving
defenseman in this series that was supposed to be the guy the other guy was Dumba I would have
gone Dumba but Dumba hasn't looked that great either and Klingberg had a hip injury and his
hips fell apart he's golfing and and if Klingberg plays again in the NHL I'll be surprised yeah it's
one of those where it's it's an injury thing it's not a player thing dude a transatlantic flight
ruined his tenure as a Leaf yeah so we look at the other he played a really we saw his last game
was a leaf yeah um it was minnesota wasn't it canucks canucks and it was a great game that was
a game where uh giordano fought dakota joshua domi fought ian cole robertson scored the winner
uh and clingberg looked really good and they flew to sweden and they're like he can't play
and people are like all right all right this is the leaves playing their ltir games but
everyone on the ground who saw klingberg they're like oh no he's fucked up he's fucked up i saw
him in the dressing room i didn't see him moving around but that everyone said they're like oh yeah
this dude can't walk and it wasn't a matter of uh if but when because he was dealing with that
back injury for a long time is that or sorry hip injury one in the same it's all the same in there
and it was just a matter of like what that thing was going to be to just hold them on the sidelines
forever unfortunately it was that plane ride then you look at some of the acquisitions that he made
moving on ryan reeves which was perplexing to all of us and there were times this year where
ryan reeves was not great and there were times this year where he was an absolute uh lightning
bolt to that team a menace and and he did help change how the team acted on the ice whether or
not he's going to be i mean he might be a 40 game player the rest of his career and might be might
play the first couple games of a playoff round and then sit the way kind of he did this year
but Ryan Reeves brought a sense of no we're going to fight back on this now along with Bertuzzi and
along with Domi that changed the tenor of this team they are tougher they did find the snot they
were looking for they just didn't find the goals they were looking for then you look at who else
did they get Connor Dewar valuable player didn't give up much yeah well I thought that goes I'm
sure they'll resign him Joel Edmondson I thought I actually really like Joel Edmondson's game dude
he fucking flattened David Pasternak and no Leaf fan is going to remember it uh because he got up
off the mat and put him to bed and then uh what who else do we have on that list we got Labushkin
Labushkin was good with Riley uh was what was he tied with more Mitch Marner he was one point off
the team lead in scoring and then and then you and then you look at like then you're getting
into like the weeds with noah gregor which i don't know do we need to come on so do i trust
brad i trust that brad knows what the issues are he tried to address them i agree with that
i agree with that and you know wasn't even allowed on the draft floor for the first however many
picks like i this is going to be a summer that defines brad trill living's tenure as leafs gm
yes um and again it just it feels like we're treating his last summer as a throwaway
that's what brendan shanahan did he made it so and he's and yet we still had really good
productive results from the guys he did bring in yeah domi is staying by the way in my opinion i
I think they're going to get an extension.
I hope so.
They've got to keep one of those dudes.
If Bertuzzi wants to stay, I think the Leafs would keep him,
but I don't know that he does.
Like you said, he wasn't looking to sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs,
and unfortunately the long-term deal wasn't out there for him.
So I assume this offseason he's going to go looking for the long-term deal
once again, and if it's there, he'll take it.
And it will be there because the cap's going up,
and who wouldn't want a player like that?
He's exactly what the Leafs need.
And so you've got that stuff going on.
I think the Leafs have two major things they need to address this year.
They need a goalie.
That has gone to the top of the list.
They got Joseph Wall.
Like, they need a 1B.
Like, Joseph Wall is my 1A forever.
Like.
For now, I should say.
Wall, Hildeby.
Oh.
No.
Nah.
It's too young.
It's too young.
I don't think you can do that next year.
No.
You can't.
And if you do do it next year, you can't do it out of camp.
You got to have an older guy in there who's a puck stopper.
I hate to say it.
The perfect goalie for the Leafs to get is a guy that they won't get,
but it's a perfect guy to get is Linus Olmark.
That's exactly the type of goalie you need.
I wonder if you have to trade for him.
No, that's what I'm saying.
They won't get him, but that's the archetype I'm talking about.
You're talking about a guy who's got a record of playing a lot of games
under pressure.
Record of splitting.
And a record of splitting, too.
He'd be perfect.
I mean, really, they need a goalie.
They either need to get a true starter,
which those don't grow on trees,
or you need someone who can help you
usher in Joseph Wall into being a starter.
And that's really hard.
Like, you might have to step in as the starter
for bits of time.
Whether he's injured or just gets cold
because he's young.
Really difficult to find.
The Leafs have not invested in a starting goaltender since Frederick Anderson.
It's time.
And if Wohl turns out to be the starter of the future, and I agree with you, Jesse, I think all the way,
let him steal the job from the guy you acquire this summer.
Let him fight for it.
Like Swayman did with Omer.
You know?
Yeah.
Let them fight it out in a healthily competitive way.
It took him less than a season to wrestle the job away from the dude who won the Vesna.
I think it's a little easier than we're painting the picture with the goaltending thing,
because you can just accumulate the goaltenders and just kind of see what works out.
And I look at the teams like Dallas, who has Ottinger, and Winnipeg, who has Hellebuck,
and how rare that is, and Vancouver, Demko, and Demko's out, and they're winning a series.
I feel like it's kind of fine if you find the 1B and maybe two 1Bs,
because you have this tremendous amount of cast space that you're not spending on your goaltenders.
Joseph Wall is going to make less than $800K next year.
your goaltender unbelievable the position's kind of free and go get two three million dollar guys
and let them all figure it out and have joseph wall is your 1a or 1b and have the guy split
time and a situation like vegas where aiden hill is now the starter again in in the series because
logan thompson was the starter the whole time he was the best player logan thompson by the way
another dude making dirt yeah and those are just kind of found pieces and goaltending these days
to me is just kind of throw as much stuff at the wall as you can you might have your young guy like
they have in joseph wall who's kind of the future there and then just find something else that kind
of works in tandem i think there are plenty of goalies available who don't have high end
capabilities samsonov has high end capabilities and we've seen them sometimes but he's such a
wild card you just need stability you just need to know how to go about your day if you're a
defenseman on this team how do you prepare for any game with that guy in that how do you prepare for
any game not knowing where the fuck the goalie's going to be on any given play right and i think
i think that's the not being able to trust the goaltenders a little more common than we realize
in the national hockey league because in the playoffs if you look at the playoffs right now
Vegas has started two guys
Boston started two guys
The Islanders started two guys
Vancouver
Vancouver started three
They got a shutout
In a series deciding game
From their third stringer
I've named four teams there, I'm not even done
LA started two guys
There's five teams just off the top of my head
In the first round of the playoffs
Toronto, six
Six teams
Have started two guys
School attending right now is so fragile that the Leafs have something in Joseph Wall
and the other guy doesn't have to be this all-world stud that they have to go out and get.
If Justus Andinen wasn't sick, I think the Avalanche might be added to that list.
Oh, yeah.
Easily.
Easily.
They're not, but I...
Oh, they wanted to move off of Georgiev so bad and then he got good.
if hellebuck doesn't have his contract in the vesna trophy uh season that he just had
brossois probably gets a game yeah with how shaky hellebuck was i mean he did play there's and he
got he got pulled hey there's a guy there's a guy love a laurent brossois as a toronto maple
leaf gold center i actually don't hate that at all i'll take brossois so so all that is to say
that i think they need a goalie and we've already been talking about the fact that the defense needs
revamping and Brad Brad wants big scary mean guys with a couple of puck movers he did he lost his
secondary puck mover John Klingberg was supposed to be that guy he and Matt Dumba I don't know
which to believe was it that the Leafs wanted him and he ultimately chose Arizona because he had
rental properties down there or was it they didn't offer him as much as Arizona did I've heard both
stories I don't know let me throw this out there and they didn't want him at the deadline which
was weird because he played like crap and he wasn't good in Tampa either Timothy Lilligren
was supposed to be that guy like the Leafs took him out for TJ Brody it was brutal Lilligren was
then pretty good this series and from his first shift in game seven I'm like oh boy he's
fucking treading water the Leafs can't forget though that defense playing the defensive side
of the game was very good
in this series when they won
game. And that's why I keep Boosh and Edmondson.
The problem was getting offense
from those defensemen as well.
They struggle with
puck moving defensemen. Dumping to a team
that wouldn't chase. And guys creating offense
from the defense and scoring is the issue
here. Brad created a great defensive
team. It's in the end they couldn't score.
So you need to solve that from the defense
out and the forward group. And I think you can.
I think you look at, if you look at,
if you, you know, we've speculated about
mitch we've speculated about john you move some of that i think the leafs already have 11 million
dollars in cap space to go into this year with and very few real rfa money like you're gonna have
to re-sign doer oh that's gonna it's not gonna be crazy expensive to lilligran's an rfa like that
oh he dude he was making 1.4 don't think he's even worth that yet would jake muslin be interested
in a coaching job my my whole thing right now it's any coach no he's a scout he's a scout right
now they're working him up through the yeah he's you can't i don't think you can officially call
him that because he's collecting a player's paycheck oh but uh isn't his contract done
uh yeah this season yeah it's done three ltir contracts coming off who is it murray clingberg
and muzzy clingberg right yeah so wow that's a lot of red the team's gonna look completely
different come october wow that's a lot of red i think what they need to be doing is spending
somewhere in the neighborhood of 48 to 52 million dollars on forwards currently they're spending
they've got 55 committed and i think they need to spend 25 to 30 depending upon where you want
to put that scale on 25 to 30 maybe 25 on their defense they need to spend more money on their
defense and the reason that they have to spend that much money is because they don't have uh
the horse is coming up from the Marley's that they need to,
to not spend that kind of money.
So this is going to be costly.
The one thing I also think that is a positive for moving on from a guy like
Mitch Marner is the development of Easton Cowan.
If you talk to people that really know their stuff,
when it comes to scouting,
uh,
Easton Cowan,
people believe if he has a good camp next year,
which there's all the reason to believe he will,
uh,
he's going to be playing games to the Leafs next year and he might just stick
it with the club.
It wouldn't be the first time.
I mean,
you might try to get some free cheap games out of them through October and
then send them back.
Um,
but for what?
Send it back for what?
I don't know.
Like what you did with Minton.
See,
see what he can do.
See what he can do.
See what he can do.
He just won the MVP.
Yeah,
but nah,
it's not the same dude.
Like Minton had a great camp and then they played them in NHL games that
count.
And you saw that he's a really feisty player who couldn't quite hang yet.
and Easton Cowan loved him in camp.
We'll see how he does in October.
That's the great thing about that nine games of runway.
But my point is, have some open space for it.
Oh, totally, totally.
He's also 18 years old.
I don't got high expectations on 18, 19-year-old.
Mitch was the fourth overall pick.
Yeah.
Easton was 26th, and look, he won the MVP.
Same with Mitch.
The only thing he didn't get was the Memorial Cup,
which Mitch got.
I'm not seeing a huge difference here.
i i really i think you have to you have to at least hold a space and go this guy could do it
well there will be spaces you think so there will be spaces um uh robertson
grab yonkin is interesting one day someone will tell us how to pronounce that
i have absolutely no idea based on the two ways that it's spelled
yeah because he anglicized it too didn't he he's changed the way it's spelled it's spelled
grabenkin but i'm almost positive that's not how you say it well you would know better than any of
us right you worked in russian then we're screwed i think it's probably closer to grabenkin but i
don't know um does kade weber kind of play into that as well right yeah what's he end up being
is he a marley is he a leaf he plays games for them oh yeah and you know what's great about a
guy like that is you can move him up and down my guess is he steps in where joel edmondson is right
now i hope that the leafs find a spot for mark giordano within the organization if he wants it
if he if he wants to he might just want to take time off but uh i have loved his time as a leaf
it was clear this year that it was coming to an end uh but i think that that's a guy that you know
a la you know jake muzzin and jason spetson when he was here and and uh these are the types of
pros that you know you tell me that in at rookie camp those guys aren't all going to follow mark
giordano around like puppies like he is like come on that's an asset same with patrick marlo when
he was here and yeah it was a good it was a good good leader and i think mark deserves that i think
he will retire tj brody um you know people almost forgot that he existed and i think that's another
puck mover moving defenseman they thought they had tj brody's had a tough time this year in his
personal life too i know that so it's it's been a hard year to watch for brody that'll be a
fascinating decision yeah i assume they'll move on from it just because at the number he'll probably
command from somebody you can't do it he's a ufa he's making five million dollars right now
probably want somewhere in the neighborhood of i would say four three you know in that neighborhood
3.5 maybe somebody will give it to him i don't think the leafs are willing to do that because
they know what they have in tj brody so it's it's like the reason some of this is just so sad is
Because we like the guys that this team has had over these years.
And it's sad to see this end of the era.
And you saying Mark Giordano retiring, like that kind of hit home.
I'm like, oh, yeah, that really sucks.
You know, and seeing if a guy like Mitch gets traded, that really sucks.
And it's the end of a lot of good guys that we like rooting for as Toronto Maple Leafs.
The problem with the Leafs was never off the ice.
These are good people.
The problem is the results on the ice.
Even Sammy, like Sammy's quotes have always been so much fun.
watching him battle back from struggling with his mental health and having no confidence and then
getting to where he was in the season and then we get this ending and then we're probably never
gonna have sammy again in a least goalie net like it sucks like all this stuff is very very uh sad
to see these guys move on he's in you know he had that fire in his eyes in the first period he was
locked in you could tell that first glove save he made i'm like oh shit we might have something here
and then you watch it evaporate shift in shift out period in you can't you can't i'm tired
are you tired tired i can't i'm fit i'm legit tired but emotionally oh i can't go through
another season of him no no no no no it's a that's you could say that about a lot of guys
have that as a blank space
plug in whatever leaf you want to drop in there
if we're on the defense one thing
positive that I think we should take away here
is I think the best defenseman in this
entire series for the Toronto Maple Leafs Jake
McCabe both sides
I love him I thought he was excellent at getting
the puck out when he needed to when he was stuck in the defensive zone
I thought he had some great back checks I thought
Jake McCabe was fantastic especially
for what the money
he's being paid at two million bucks
he's been great
yeah simone benoit yeah uh real good great great player yeah i i love i love what does i do that
was great he he crushed marshan last night in one of those hits and i just man i look at that guy
again there's another brad guy 1.35 extension what was the title of the article when he was
brought in worst the leaf signed the worst defenseman in the league who said that oh uh
simone benoit yeah they called simone benoit charting wise he had bad numbers with the ducks
the ducks don't count stop i don't i didn't read that they don't know is well it's the reason that
steve got a hundred thousand views on his simone benoit video because that article made a lot of
waves everyone's like who the hell is this and i was like uh i don't know truthfully but let me
try to tell you what
I know.
I think Benoit's also
still so young. I was praising Jake
McCabe. He's 30. Benoit's 25.
We're signed to a three-year deal.
Benoit's going to be good.
Dude, there are lots of
pieces on this team to like.
McMahon. He didn't play.
We missed Bobby McMahon this series.
That's how crucial he's become since
that January hat trick onwards.
January, February, I forget. That winter
hat trick to where he just turned to this great goal
score the leafs really missed bobby mcmahon do you pull off one of game three or four if you have
him maybe maybe you know and and and that's the thing like by the way mcmahon was on waivers this
year just want to throw that out there so was benoit like so so with all that said the doom
and the gloom only comes from repeating the same error and this is where it comes back to what i
said was oh it's you're gonna see so many tweets oh it's gonna be so hard for the leafs to do
this oh you know what because it's so easy to sit through a first round loss after first round loss
no the hard part would be accepting them bringing this back the pieces on this team are good they
got good pieces on this team i'm so sick of everyone looking at the leafs like they're goldfish
act like you have a memory like a human being oh well what do you talk i well this year in a vacuum
fuck the vacuum it's not a vacuum it's cumulative and you know what you're only a decade here's what
else is cumulative okay where the Toronto Maple Leafs finished this year let's just look at this
I think this is important I was thinking about this on the way in standings regular season the
Leafs finished third in the division which is pretty regular for them with 102 points what was
their season series against the Blackhawks oh and two oh and two if they had gotten those those
points okay that's four more points they're at 106 Boston's at 109 what was their season series
against the Ottawa Senators.
Bad.
Bad.
I think they won one of three games.
If you get two more of those games,
which the Ottawa Senators were terrible this year,
you should take three out of four from the Senators.
That puts them above the Florida Panthers
for first in the division.
The reason, guys, it's cumulative.
When you guys get on us, and I get it,
oh, it's early in the season, it doesn't matter.
Yes, it does.
Yes, it does.
I don't want to hear that from Leaf fans anymore.
I know I will, but I don't want to hear it from anybody who says, oh, you know what?
You're going to blow.
You're going to blow a bad game.
Blowing a bad game.
It won a couple of times.
Fine.
It's over and over.
Losing to the Sabres nine to three.
Losing to the Blackhawks in the season series.
Losing to Ottawa who crushed you for like the third season in a row because they always bring their A game and you effing don't.
And couldn't do a thing against anybody else.
With the losses to the Blackhawks, both of them came against Arvid Soderblom.
Arvid Soderblom started 29 games this season.
In those 29 games, he went 5-22 and 2.
Of his five wins this season, two of them came against the Toronto Maidens.
Jail.
Five.
Prison.
Abundance.
He had an 8-80 save percentage.
5-22 and 2.
Oh, two.
Oh, my God.
Guys.
He beat the Toronto Maple Leafs twice.
This is a team that should have won the division.
Maybe.
Maybe at least the home ice.
At least been in contention of it.
Home ice for sure.
I mean, the Florida Panthers and Boston Bruins finished one point apart.
Hey, here's a team they could have beaten the regular season.
You ready for it?
It's going to blow your fucking mind.
Boston!
Oh, yeah.
They didn't.
They didn't.
And I think it's really important that we highlight that.
these games against the opponents that stink the Leafs tended to play to their level time to mix
it up time to make changes these types of points that Boston and Florida got that the Leafs did
not were the difference the Leafs playing the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round this year
different series I believe I don't think Tampa and I think by the way Tampa is going to have a
big revamp this summer and they're going to be back I think that Tampa this year looked old
and tired and i what was it jesse you called them with people kucherov merchants yeah just get the
puck to nikita and uh and and you know what nikita kucherov's points totals really covered up a lot
of warts on that first line stamp coast is not going to be a lightning player i don't think he's
gone we'll see he's going to go to detroit that's my bad i don't know they need new patrick king
hey man jt or hey man jt nashville and willie and austin they're all going to go to detroit
they're all everybody's going to detroit they're all going to sign for a million dollars and they
I want to play for Barry Trotz.
Y'all, I'll tell you this.
Nashville is no joke.
They get some goal scoring in.
They get some goal scoring in.
Nashville's going to play really...
Nashville's going to do well next year.
Steve, do you want a Lucky Charm cookie?
Oh.
Are they done?
I think they should be cooled by now.
It's been two hours.
You're cool.
Can I bring out a Lucky Charm cookie
to end the show?
Adam, unless you got more stuff.
No, I think we can do that.
We're over two hours in.
Yeah, no, let's do it.
Jesse literally baked cookies.
Let's bring it, Jesse.
Let's do it.
I can't believe I can't smell it.
You can't smell that?
Do I have COVID?
Do I have COVID?
I usually have a good sense of smell.
Yeah, what's going on?
I couldn't smell it either.
And I have no voice?
Oh, shit.
Uh-oh.
Oh.
Okay, there it is.
I was getting worried.
Now, did you get Lucky Charms because you want Steve to eat this
and have good luck in his career with the Leafs finally?
Is that what I'm asking?
Is that what it is?
I think that's what this is, right?
This is a chance for Steve to have some good luck with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
I will say this.
I'm working on bringing CJ on.
You know, CJ always does his end of season with us.
And I'll tell you this.
That'll help get him.
Based on CJ's article today, going to be explosive.
Going to be awful explosive.
Can you catch a cookie, Matty?
Oh, don't move that chair.
Don't move that chair.
Don't move it.
Don't move it.
It's going to roll over it.
