Hey, it's regular season Eve.
It just rolls off the tongue, but you know what's really important?
Your fantasy drafts and your fantasy teams, maybe your drafts have already taken place.
I personally was in two this weekend.
I feel very, very good about both of them.
I got one tonight.
Now, here's the thing.
Some of your leagues, they might have commissioners that are a little bit Gary Bettmanish.
What?
It's just a little slow on the...
They won't leave?
They won't leave.
And they won't move to Citrus, which is the very first, hockey first fantasy
app out there. And the great thing about it is you can import your team. So if you've even done
your draft, you can bring it all over right now. Just move it right now. Not too late to switch.
Citrus fantasy sports. Season long fantasy hockey at the heart of it. You start a league, you draft
a team, you compete all season. And if you have a league, you can import it to Citrus. Picking the
player is easy. But you also get Stormy, your assistant GM, there to help you work through
roster questions and all your own customized scoring settings, basically fantasy hockey, just the way
you want it, whether it's setting it once a week, which I'm in a league for, or the rotissory,
I'm also in a league four.
I don't know.
What do you guys prefer?
As adults, as adults who are unc now.
Is it the ones a week?
I think week to week is the best.
But you've got to change your lineups every day.
You got to commit.
I like that.
Yeah.
That week thing, I don't know about all that.
Yeah.

Let's go!
Well, we are here.
And you know, the one thing I want to say before we get into the fact that hockey starts tomorrow.
Yeah.
Is that we had an incredible time at the course in Clubhouse.
We're going to win the Shaly Cup!
And then he lost his career as a politician forever.
Remember when that used to...
That was it?
going pia and getting too hyped on a microphone would lose you your career and now it's topped
about hourly just about hourly sorry adam yeah that's the clubhouse that was great big shout out to
the course in clubhouse uh big shout out to the staff there big shout out to the family that owns
it anthony and entire family it's a it's a great family operation uh over 200 people there last night
because you got to include the server not last night saturday night you got to include the staff
but it was just, it was an amazing, amazing time again.
Everybody was super kind.
And you know what?
Shout out to all the yanks that came up.
We had Michigan.
We had Ohio.
Ohio.
We had Western New York.
Yeah.
Somebody came from Binghamton.
Bingo.
Yeah.
I was like, damn, that's a drive.
I was like, yeah, you guys are going to get an HL team soon.
And they're like, no, we're not.
Yeah, no.
Building's garbage.
You had a couple people that were in from Europe and they happened to be here at the same time as, like, the show was happening.
Yeah.
Germany and Pali.
France.
She hadn't been back home in two years and she's spending a month here.
She's lived in Paris for seven years, I think she told us.
And then she was like, she was like, yeah, but then I heard that you guys were going to be here.
I don't, do we ever get around asking her how she listens to us in the first place?
She's living in France for seven years.
No, I get that part, but like Spotify, Apple.
But why?
There's other sports there, right?
Like, you know, I could see you losing touch with hockey.
I think we're just really good.
A lot of people made a lot of long drives.
It was really appreciated.
Even people who were in the GTA made long drives because of the traffic that happened
on the GUW and the giant accident.
But everybody came in from like Ottawa or down south in the States.
Like it was really cool.
I thought I was so clever.
It's like arrival time, 420.
I'm like, all right.
Get it down to arrival time like 412.
And I'm like, oh, making great time.
Anyway, I got there at 5 o'clock.
Yeah.
They basically shut down the QEW
And we thought being on a Saturday this year
I'm like, ah, we'll just cruise down.
It'll be easy.
Nope.
But I did get to take a nice drive through Grimsby
and then Beamsville and then Balls Falls,
which is a real place.
I don't think you should get Steve started.
That could be the next two hours.
Falls Falls?
No, if we're talking about traffic.
Oh, yeah.
No, it's his favorite subject.
I had a conversation.
I had a conversation with a local.
Oh, my God.
With a local.
Oh, man.
There was a family, like,
on a farm, like three generations
of them, just standing at the end of the driveway
with beers, watching all the cars
go by like it was the Santa Claus parade.
It was just like, how are you guys doing?
They're like, oh, you know,
just watching us.
Something to do on a Saturday.
Just something to do.
I don't want to engage.
No, let's not take this any further.
That was it?
That was all I had to say.
You have 90 minutes on traffic prepared at any moment.
He could do his own podcast on that.
You could do a traffic podcast.
Straight down the barrel, no camera changes.
And I want you to appreciate it.
I don't.
I did 30 seconds and I'm done.
But if you want, I got 89 and a half more.
I'm ready.
I don't want it.
I tap out.
No, okay.
I don't want it.
I'll leave it.
Nick Blankenberg has earned himself the contract that we all knew he was going to get,
but I still think it's good that he got $1.4 million from the Toronto Maple Leafs.
I didn't know he was going to get that one.
That particular number?
Yeah.
That, it's fascinating because it's a PTO.
I assume if you're signing a PTO, you're lucky to get Leaguemen.
You're lucky to get a contract at all.
Right.
Some of us look ahead to these things.
And this is the exact contract he should be given because this is the exact amount to utilize the LTIR space that Domi provides them.
That's right.
They are within, I think, $10,000 of the exact optimal amount of space.
And this was kind of predicted once we kind of realized he'd get that PTO.
this is the amount left, this is what you should pay him, you're just going to get it.
And big shout out to Puckpedia, who have calculated that Vegas are $3
within their cap.
Wow.
Toronto's 10K, Vegas is $3.
That's crazy.
Just a few thousand dollars off.
They call it most optimal.
Now, is that gentleman most optimal?
Because if you don't go that high to the cap, you accrue deadline cap space, you're able to
take on contracts.
It's never really stopped the Leafs before who've never had deadline cap space.
It's never really stopped Vegas before.
Yeah, that's even more true.
Yeah.
General Fannager, baby.
Yeah.
Before Puckpedia, before Cap Friendly, there was General Fannager, and that's who, isn't he
head of hockey ops now?
I don't know.
Tom, I have not kept up with Tom's career the way I probably.
He's high up with Vegas.
But we wish him the best.
Yeah, oh, 100%.
I don't know if he likes this anymore.
Imagine because, you know, with the whole Kelly McCrim and stuff.
Tom, I still like you.
Okay.
You're like the only one, but I still like you.
Unrequited, but it's there.
I want to say that the interesting part for me for the Leafs right now,
Jonas and James on The Leaf Report were talking about Dakota Joshua's like mystery injury.
He has been skating with the team, but there was a core injury.
It's a core injury.
But there's a suggestion that maybe he's going on LTIR, but I'm like he's skating.
So like that's that to me coming out of camp is like the weirdest part.
Like what is it?
What are we doing?
Well, what is the minimum required games missed or time missed for LTIR?
I don't know.
I don't know.
Because maybe they do something like that.
Yeah.
I mean,
but I don't know.
It doesn't benefit them.
I don't know.
Right?
Like,
because you only get half the cap savings
and it's only for the time
that the player is off.
So.
And you're an injury away from doing a whole song and dance
and how long is Nick Paul going to be out?
Yeah.
Isn't the regular season grand.
Jesse,
did you get anything from like the Dakota Joshua stuff while you were at camp
other than he is skating?
I think we hit it on at the top of the show on Friday.
I brought that up.
Like he was out there.
Like I think he just, he has an injury and it's, it's unfortunate for his situation
because there's guys ahead of him now on the pecking order.
But I think, uh, depth is good.
Depth is good.
I think they've positioned themselves in a good place where all John Chica did was add bottom
six guys.
And now they can use them.
Yeah.
I'm not too worried about the lineup with or without Dakota Joshua.
I'm, I'm disappointed about, uh, Nick Paul not being in the lineup, like the new guy.
But do we know that?
I'm not.
I'm not, well, potentially not being in the lineup, but I'm not worried.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
No.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, it's obviously better if he's in.
But that was the thing that dogged him a little bit last year, too, was the health thing.
Right?
A lot of bit.
That's why he's here.
Yeah.
Honestly, like he's on a good deal.
If he plays.
Like, if you don't play.
You know, it sort of struck me.
And I know the Leafs gave picks as well.
But I feel like the Leafs got more back.
At least right now for Dennis Hildeby than they got for Joseph Wool.
Because if you look at the lineup,
Amil Andre is not going to be likely in the starting lineup.
Like game one tomorrow night.
I wouldn't, well, yesterday I was asked,
do you think he's going to get waived?
I don't.
No, I don't think he's getting waived.
I don't think it's impossible, though.
That he gets waived?
No, they got...
I highly doubt it.
Oh, yeah, no, they traded for him.
They're just going to wave him.
No, that's not happening.
Well, no.
Why would they send them down?
Like just,
they haven't even tried them.
They got to try them.
No, I think they're going to try them.
But like, again, it's going to be difficult to find your way into the lineup.
Nick Blankenberg is not in this lineup.
Yeah, the D, I assume on Tuesday will be Riley Radish, McCabe Tanev, OEL, Stetcher.
That's what they've been running all preseason long.
And this is what I think it will be.
This is what it was on practice in Arizona on Saturday.
Nick Paul also took.
He was at practice.
He was a participant, full practice.
But Jim Hiller said then he's unsure if he'll be ready Tuesday,
but at least practice in like an hour from right now when we're recording.
So post that practice, like half an hour after that,
we'll find out another update on Nick Paul if you'd be ready for Tuesday's game.
So there's chance.
Chance Nick Paul might get in there.
But yeah, back to the D.
Andre is not in the first six.
You know, he's a seventh or eight, depending on how you have him in Blankenberg.
And I think that's pretty interesting.
Yeah.
Because, I mean, when they got him, Stetcher wasn't even signed.
So it was sort of sort of like, oh, what he is.
I think in the trade, you kind of know what Joseph Wall is.
Like, I think everybody are-
I don't know what-
The backup goal is.
Everybody or, yeah, I don't know.
He's George Vesna out there.
No, sorry, Carrie Price, puck handling is what it was.
I think he is a quality backup goaltender.
Yeah.
And so in that trade with Dennis Hildeby, there's still room to grow there.
I think Dennis Hildovie is going to be a really.
good goaltender in this league.
He might be the heir apparent to the Vasilevsky throne there in Tampa.
You think so?
Things go to plan.
I see a lot of cool stuff with Hildeby.
I hope he sucks.
Holy shit, Jesse.
I love Hildedby's,
but I hope he sucks now.
For the stake of fandom,
you know,
you hope he's out of the league in a year.
Yeah,
I'm happy for him.
I'm happy for him,
but I'm not that happy for him.
I've not ruined for that kind of thing.
I think that's a young goaltender in terms of when
goldender's mature.
Yeah.
And that's like,
You got to pay for the potential.
I don't cheer for teams.
I cheer for players.
Yeah, the players on my team.
It's not on my team anymore.
I got guys I like around the Leafs.
Yeah, same.
But I want the Leafs to win.
So I hope Hildoby's things.
I think that's why the return, like, I think it's much stronger for Nick Paul than
Joseph Wall, you know, Andre deal.
I think it's, and I just think that's odd.
Like if you'd said at the beginning of the off season,
well, they're going to trade Wall and Hildeby, who do you think they get more for?
Oh, for months.
Of course.
That's been the most exciting thing about John Chica.
Every prediction I had before he was hired is wrong.
Yeah.
Basically.
I was like, all right, here's what their goalie situation is going to look like.
And were we talking about Bob?
Them signing Bob.
They're going to prioritize getting a free age.
The problem was they had too many goaltenders.
Yeah.
And they're going to sign Bob.
All right.
And they got rid of two of them.
It's, I love this wildcard.
It's great content.
He'll be his 25, by the way.
Oh, he's 25.
He was drafted a little, I want to say he was drafted when he was 20,
so people think he's a little younger than he is.
A 20-22 draft pick.
I think he's older than Ackyimov.
He's either older or the same age.
But Ackyimov's a 2020 pick.
Right.
So, yeah, two years later, and they're the same age.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, there you go.
Yeah.
That's what it was.
Let me see.
Akhtiyamov is 24.
I got to check the birthday year, though.
2001.
They're born the same year, so those birthdays coming up.
Yeah, they are the same age.
Wow, I didn't know that.
I always thought Akhtiamaf is this young kid.
Right.
He's 25.
I mean, that's still pretty young.
Yeah, yeah.
He's 18 in goal years.
Yeah, exactly.
That's right.
Exactly.
He's 18 in goal years, and someone like Mark Andre Fleury,
when they make the NHL at 18, they're 14.
Yeah, that's crazy.
Do you guys foresee a future in, I don't know, two years, maybe less than that, a year
and we're like, whoof, that hill to be trade, you might haunt the list.
No, I don't.
I did it until the sport.
Division for the next, like, half decade.
I mean, the fact is you gave Tampa an upgrade over Jonas Johansson.
And to me, it was always so funny to see the elite lightning regular season team because
they're not getting out of the first round for whatever reason these past few years.
And then it's like, and you're starting.
Jordan Jonas Johansson.
And it was like, no, Andre Vasselowski better find a way to get back in even to this game.
Like, he was not good.
I think it's hilarious that Ottawa ended up with him.
But it's a very, I mean, it's bad for us.
Hildeby's a very good goalie.
He's going to be a capable backup.
I think that's his ceiling, by the way.
I'm not in the field.
I'm like, I don't think he's going to unseat Vasselowski.
If I'm wrong, all the power to him.
But I think that gives them an unbelievable one-two punch.
And it was already great with Andre.
I think his ceiling is starter somewhere else.
Okay.
Like I think...
You think he's a Stanley Cup starter or no?
Not yet.
But I think the best he can be in Tampa,
unless Vasilevsky's like out for the season
is very good backup.
Vaselovsky's got at least five, six very good years left.
In the two fantasy drafts I was in this weekend,
Vaselowski won in the top ten in both of them.
That's how much...
Yeah, he's incredible.
That's how incredible.
And you're not really supposed to draft goalies that high,
but it's Andre Vasselowski.
He's incredible.
And he's going to play a ton of games.
And the only way, like,
best case scenario for Hildaby is he plays himself
into some kind of scenario
where Tampa ends up trading him
because he has value to get something else.
Right?
I just, how are you?
You're not going to unseat Vassel.
I don't think unseat,
but whenever the day comes,
maybe he's around to take the reins to be the next guy.
I think whenever that day comes,
he'll be at least 30.
Yeah.
Sounds good.
It's possible.
Maybe you go, maybe you go 40, two each, and then the playoffs, it's his.
Yeah.
But then it's Hilda B's, right?
They get to be one A and one B during the regular season.
And the Leafs have two or three cups by then, and I'm fine with it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, I'll give you that too.
McKenna, a couple of heart trophies as well.
Okay.
McKenna, more cons mites or Hildeby Veznas?
McKenna, easily.
Easily.
Yeah.
Well, then what are we even talking about?
McKenna's so good.
He's going to win two culters, all right?
Yeah.
This end next year.
They'll be like, ah, we can't get, we can't take it away from it.
We simply can't.
The first guy to win everything.
Absolutely.
They give them the Norris too.
So, anyway, the Leafs start tomorrow.
I've got streams Tuesday, Wednesday, and then Steve is back with his stream Saturday nights.
So that is happening this week, which we're very excited about.
And obviously, practice isn't happened yet.
So there's not a whole lot of Leaf's news to kind of hit.
But very exciting that hockey's just tomorrow.
And it kind of feels, I just wanted to kind of touch on that because there's some predictions
and stuff I want you guys to do later on the show.
But just the, when the season ended last season, like, and, you know, and it ends for us in mid-July.
Like, we do, we keep doing episodes, but the season's effectively over and the trades and signings have mostly happened.
I remember being absolutely exhausted.
And I think part of that was just the amount of games in one week and then the Olympics as well, right?
You're just so overloaded.
I look at the schedule this year and I'm like, oh, that's pretty light.
Oh, it's an autumn breeze.
Like they start on a back-to-back.
That's three games a week.
But then they get like a two-day break.
How many two-day breaks they have last year?
Oh, man.
Not money.
Not many.
I never even, I didn't even bother to look at the calendar.
I'm like, they're playing today.
It was like baseball.
Yeah.
The schedule tomorrow's fun.
Panthers, Hurricanes, Canadians,
Leaves, Rangers, Bruins,
Canucks Oilers, Blackhawks, Golden Knights.
We get to see Mike Babcock's debut.
You get to see Hurricanes, Panthers.
We get see Brady Cachachach,
Leaves Canadians, obviously.
Rangers.
I don't know if anybody's excited to see them, but I am.
It's still the Rangers.
It's still Boston and the Rangers.
And it's opening night.
Exactly.
It's a good lineup.
CJ was saying, Jess,
that first off,
I love the fact that they staggered that.
That's excellent.
Number two,
CJ was saying on the CJ show last week
that, like,
he said it,
I expect the first month to be just
the sloppiest talk you've ever seen.
Yeah,
because the lack of preseason thing,
it's not going to be the same.
It's more going to be kind of like the NFL
where nobody plays in the preseason.
the first couple of games is everybody's kind of getting climatized to play again.
I think this is with the new NHL.
Yeah.
Which I think is better.
Screw the preseason.
Yeah.
Play the games that matter.
Well, it would be great because someone's going on a heater in October and then they're
going to crash.
Always.
Like you know that's going to happen.
Always.
Like Nick Schmaltz, who's good, but he was getting like three points a night.
Yeah.
Yeah.
He was tearing it up.
You're like, what?
All right.
We don't give the league a ton of credit.
They cooked, I fear.
Oh, yeah.
Opening night is real good.
They did cook for that one.
They did.
I think they're, you know what?
I'll give the NHL.
I'll stand up.
I'll be that guy standing up.
The standing up.
I think the NHL is doing a better job of its entertainment delivery in the last three years.
Especially like since COVID, yes.
But really in the last three years, they seem to have been like, oh, maybe, ah, this staggered
start.
I guess we should try it.
And then people, and then, oh, we, the people watch out of market games in the NFL and in the NBA.
We should try that.
We should allow people to do that because they were.
anti that forever.
Except for blackouts.
They still haven't figured that out.
I don't know how else to put it.
It looks like they actually put thought into it.
Yeah.
Which is insulting to the way they used to do it.
But this is what people asked for and then you simply did it.
They are.
Is that not entertainment?
They fumbled Mitch in his return last year.
That was ugly,
ugly stuff in terms of scheduling.
But other than that,
they seem to be learning.
Wasn't that the Leafs lone Friday game the entire season?
I'm not sure.
I don't remember that, Steve.
But it might have been.
It was one of them.
They play on Fridays on the Hall of Fame game.
It was their lone non-Saturday game of that week.
Yeah.
And they had the ability to move it.
They played Friday Sunday.
Yeah.
No discernible reason.
And it was on the second half of a back-to-back so for the Golden Knights.
So there's no media for Mitch.
It didn't make any.
Can I be honest with you?
I think that I bet the request was made to move it because you can move games.
That can't happen.
And I bet that the Vegas Golden Knights were like, no.
I guess why would we do that.
And it benefits them and they won.
But I think the NHL has done a really much better job.
And they are kind of like the farmer.
We're the farmer and they're the cow and we're trying to pull them across the road.
No, we want you to come to the other pasture.
I don't have you've ever seen that happen, but I have.
Like a cow gets stubborn and they just stand in the road and farmers are trying to move them.
They're like, no, I'm just not going to move now.
And traffic starts to back up.
You can just TikTok it.
It's everywhere.
I will. And I think that with this, one place that I still think that they need an improvement
in a big way is how they market the stadium series, heritage classic, whatever else they have.
Because, you know, I love the staggered starts and stuff. But even for us who do this for a living,
I'll be honest with you, when the heritage game happens or when the stadium series game happens,
I don't usually know until like a week before or less. I find out day of. Yeah. It's like, oh, that's in the
Miami Marlin Stadium. Oh, cool. And it doesn't matter when I do find out. Yeah. You know what I mean? No, it's just it's hyper localized, which is fine. Like we talk about how the NHL is gate driven. But why do a spectacle if you're not going to at least try to try to try to draw a national audience? No, I agree with you. I think they just try to make it. The Kachshunds are involved the way they were last year. Yeah. I think they just try to make it a local spectacle. Yeah, I think they've realized it's more important to the people who are there than to get people eyeballs on TV. And that's just, I think the. I think the.
the reality, the NHL.
It's about the in-person experience and driving the gate in the community that you
built.
Like this year,
the outdoor game in Salt Lake City for Utah.
I believe you.
That's going to be a spectacle for the views and everything.
Sure it is.
What do you mean, sure is?
You're just finding out again.
Who are they playing?
How did I start the second?
Vegas, I believe.
No, Vegas is in the Dallas, Colorado.
Colorado on that one.
Like that's the winter classic on July 31st.
Where's Chicago's game?
Chicago, they're doing the global series.
Chicago and Ottawa are going over to Germany for the global series that's happening in December.
Are you just finding out about this right now?
What a sizzling rivalry?
Well, I think you have the players, right?
The connections right there.
No.
Stutzler is German.
What's Bader?
No, but like Stutzla is on the cover.
That's why you throw him there.
But he's the German guy.
Why are the Blackhawks going?
Of course he plays bass, Steve.
Yeah.
Oh, my God.
He's their token German guy.
I can run through the event if you want.
Yeah,
so we have the Tim Horton's Heritage Classic, Montreal, Winnipeg in October 25th.
That's next month.
Wild stuff.
Yeah.
And then the Hall of Fame game that they're in there.
Global Series, Carolina and Seattle are going to Finland.
Cool.
In November.
Now,
there are two fins on the front there are there not?
Is that not Capo caco and Sebastian Ajo?
Ajo, a slight difference in Star Power.
but hell yeah.
And then the global series
Blackhawks sends in December.
By the way,
anybody listening to this,
we're looking at the actual posters
they put up for this.
Yes.
December 31st,
the outdoor game in Salt Lake City,
Avs, Utah Mammoth.
I'm sorry.
That's the Discover card.
Is the stadium riceicles?
Yeah.
Ricycles.
Like a popsicle made of rice?
I don't know how you say it.
Is it Rice Eccles?
Probably.
I don't know.
I don't know what that is.
Bryce, Ecles.
All-Star game, UBS Arena, February 5th and 6th.
We should go to that.
And then we got Steve's birthday, no shot.
Oh, is it?
No shot.
We'll bring Hayden instead of Steve.
Yeah.
Yeah, the boys will go on a trip.
Enjoy your wife or whatever.
He had them and Hayden.
We're going to have fun.
Drew can come to.
I guess everybody's going except for Steve.
Yep.
All right.
The outdoor game, indoor game at Jerry World.
Yeah, that'll be cool.
Vegas.
I won't make time to watch that.
That's going to be fun.
Yeah.
And then we got another global series coming in 2027.
They already threw up there.
In Kalagni.
Yeah, there you go.
That's good.
Oh.
You should go to Kalagni.
I would love to go to Kloon.
That would be amazing.
Robert Rice Stadium.
Rice Eccles Stadium.
I don't know why it's called it.
Spencer Eccles, Utah alum.
So it's Rice and Eckers?
No, Robert Rice Stadium.
It was, that was the name of it.
And then somebody named Spencer Eccles as well.
chairman of Utah's biggest bank
and now it's the
yeah anyway
they donated $10 million to the project
and now it's riceackles
not like a fun
cool not like a fun frozen treat
that you get from your refrigerator
or riceackles
yeah I'd be interested in a riceicle
I would be too
I think we have a good season coming up
yeah I think it's gonna be a lot of storylines
a lot of fun stuff especially after like
the summer we had with all the transactions
and everything I only think I think like
like everything's going to compile on each other
and there's going to be even more of that.
Yes.
Even like being at the Coursen Clubhouse,
there were hockey highlights on our TV.
Yeah.
Hell yeah, dude.
I was really loving that.
I was like,
Elias Pedersen scored a goal.
Anything's possible.
Yeah.
It's great.
It's crazy.
Look at them do that.
Look at them.
Go.
I love the preseason man.
It's great.
Get me fired up.
Like,
Larkin is.
got to happen. Hellebuck's got to happen. Quinn Hughes has got to happen. Like, we're still waiting
all right stuff. Before Christmas, of those three that you just mentioned, how many of them get done?
It doesn't matter which ones you think, but is it one of three? Is it two of three? Is it zero?
Two or three. So we're doing, what is it, Larkin, Helibuck, Marchenko? Is that word?
No, I said Quinn Hughes. Quinn Hughes. Extension and or trade.
I think Hughes gets done, although I do think it's going to drag into the winner.
So you what was the drop dead date?
September 31st.
No, I don't think it's done by them.
I just want to know which one.
I just want to know how many of them you think.
Larkin's done.
Larkin's done by then.
And Halebuck's done.
Okay.
Yeah.
The two, three.
Would you, if you were a spiteful person, would you force Connor Hellibuck into retirement by
letting him sit out his entire contract?
You can't force him into retirement, but I think the Jets should not be actively searching
out trade trade for him.
Not literally, obviously.
But like if you, because he has, is it three or four years left?
Larkin's four.
He's at least five.
I think it's five.
This year included, it's five.
It's five total.
The Jets can sit there and make him sit five years.
Yes.
And that's essentially, I think you're retired by the end of that.
Yes.
In that you haven't played hockey in five years.
Would you do something like that?
I don't think they're spiteful like that.
I don't think anybody should tolerate that.
Uh-huh.
Like, because I think there's an element with Hellebuck and,
Larkin that fans are like, yeah, no, don't capitulate to this.
But it is going to get to a point.
Like, what if the Jets end up being fine?
Like, what if they end up being good?
Fans are going to be like, you know, your two points out of the playoffs.
All right, you know what might be able to get us over the line is if you trade this guy for whatever?
Or get some assets for him that we can then trade at the deadline.
Yeah.
And like, even the league.
It's entirely possible with Stuart Skinner that the Jets are fine.
Entirely possible.
Maybe.
They're essentially the same team.
with a hot shot rookie and a goalie that's been in the Stanley Cup finals for a couple of years.
They're going to claim a goalie either today or next crop of waiver guys.
Lauren Pursua is available.
Well?
Waivers.
Well.
But what if they're bad?
If they're bad, then there's no pressure.
Yeah.
Right.
I don't think there's any pressure.
It's sort of he's put them in a scenario where it's hard for them to lose.
And I think what he's done too by doing this.
And I know he's got his reasons for it.
I don't know how, I don't know exactly.
what they are. They alluded to security, so I'm assuming it's something with that. But
what he's done is he's galvanized the fan base. So where the Jets finished last season, at least
from my outsider's perspective, was fans were pissed with the owner, not owner, GM. They were pissed
with the way the season went. They thought the team wasn't really well coached. They're pissed with
the way that they, you know, yo yo guys like Cole Prafetti. And, you know, what was it? Who's that
Brad?
Brad Lambert asked for a trade.
Didn't get one still there.
I think what it's done now,
it shifted the anger to him,
the frustration, I guess, to him.
And yes,
he will always be the best goaling in franchise history
until somebody else comes in and plays
five million games for them.
Dennis Illaby.
That's right, Jesse.
Honestly, not a terrible pick.
No.
They're selling at the deadline.
The lightning get like Shifley.
Yeah.
No, Shifley is a Canadian.
Oh, yeah.
Well, no one wants to play like a Montreal Canadian.
That's the guy.
Yeah.
That's that's Hagey for Shifley.
It is kind of the guy.
I think that's the guy.
If the jets are bad.
Sorry.
Yeah.
I hate that.
Are you on a line with Jake Evans?
Anyway, I think it's the perfect.
It's a perfect.
No, no.
This is the redemption tour for Criter and for Shifley.
You're not seeing the, we embrace you now because you're one of us.
You're seeing the vision.
Thank you.
Sorry.
I'll interrupt.
No, but I, I just think what they've done is they've, they've,
they've galvanized the Jets fan base to be like, well, fucking screw you, man.
And it's one thing to request to trade.
People get that.
The larkin thing's hilarious because he's like, I'll take the trade to these three great
teams.
Okay, I'll add a fourth.
It's also a great team.
And I said this at the course in clubhouse, but I don't think that episode is quite up yet.
It is.
Oh, it is?
All the teams he wants to trade to are all teams that have basically been to the conference
finals the last two, three years.
And they all have less than a million dollars in cap space except for one.
It's ridiculous.
So, like, there's no, he's given them no options, but Hellebuck by not coming, not showing up to camp, not facing the media.
Like, at least Larkin did that.
You can respect that, right?
And so.
Yes, I know a lot of people don't want to give him that credit.
You should give him.
He's there.
He's there.
He's there.
He's there.
He's there.
So, shut up.
So my question will be with Hellebuck is, who gets out to a bad start that shouldn't?
And, and then goes, all right, Winnipeg, we'll give you.
not a bullshit offer.
Because Darren Dregor, who's got a direct line to them, has been saying they're getting
terrible offers.
Vegas, possibly?
You think so?
Possibly.
I mean, are you flipping them, Aden Hill?
Like, what do you do?
Well, that's no good.
Like, so with Larkin, like, I was trying to throw out names during our course in
clubhouse show, guys who are.
early let's go with mid 20s early side of mid 20s good cheapish still some upside right like that's who
Detroit should be going after if Winnipeg's not going full rebuild which I don't know if that's
something they have the appetite for it they should be looking for a similar player at some point
Vegas is going to have to part ways with Brad Howden if they want to add like I don't see I don't see
how they can add to that group, which they're always looking to do, without completely fleecing
someone. And like, I think there's a lot of bad GMs in this league, but I do think enough of them
are like, you know, Vegas keeps stealing our wallet. Like, let's maybe figure this out. So someone
like him. Okay. Okay. Like him. Yeah. Yeah. But you're still going to need to add more to that
off. You know what I kind of think. I kind of think Florida still. And I know that that means they'd have to
move off Markstrom. I just don't think that's going to work. Oh, God. I don't know how you would,
I don't know how you would do that. Well, they don't have anybody. Yeah, where's the cash space
come from? Marksstrom and the assets. How do you do that without getting rid of Lundel?
Yeah. Anton Lundel, Connor Hullabuck, straight up. I mean, I think Witterbeg would do that.
Would Florida? I don't think so. Well, then. Um, like what else do you have? Right. Like,
people don't understand.
No, no, no, it's like something a little less than less.
Who's that?
Yeah, they don't have any first round picks until 2030.
That's insane.
Okay, who are their prospects?
That's a good question.
I don't know.
Oh, I'll give me an name, Cooper Black.
He's an absolutely friggin' enormous goalie that they have in the system.
Well, there you go.
That's exactly what Winnipeg's looking for.
So, okay, there's one.
Yeah, but that's not enough.
Ah!
You got to figure something out, man.
Okay. All right. Well, it's going to be a fun one. I'm excited for that. Sailing is an ESIM service, and it's got a couple of things going for it. Number one, saves you a ton of money on roaming fees in both data and sell and text plans, which is awesome, wherever you're going. And the second thing is it's backed by NordVPN, so you don't have to worry about sketchy Wi-Fi.
I wonder if anybody who came to our event over the weekend who drove over the border use Saly. They should have. You know, you come up from the States. You use Saly real quick because you could get like a day plan where you get certain amount of gigs or whatever if you're there for a couple days.
And then you go back and then you're like, oh, I didn't pay very much because the sale is very cheap.
Oh.
And Jesse, you've used this on vacation many times.
Yeah, I have.
That's why I know how cheap it is.
But you went to Mexico this summer.
Yes.
What did you take like a week-long plan?
Like how does it?
Yeah, I got it's never used the app.
Yeah, you can get a certain amount of gigabytes for a certain amount of time.
Like I got seven days.
I think I only did like three or five gigabytes because I didn't need much because there's like
Wi-Fi around two.
But when you need that cell reception, it's good to have in your back pocket.
And the E-Sim's very easy to install very much.
for anybody worried about like, ooh, newfangled technology.
No, everything's ESIMs now.
It's very easy.
It's just an app.
There's also global and regional plans.
So if you're visiting several countries, it's easy.
Okay?
So let me take a quick sip before I start coughing.
Saly.
What's their code there?
The code is Dangle.
Go to Saly.com.
Use the promo code Dangle, 15% off exclusively for you.
Or just download the app.
Use the code Dangle at checkout for 15% off with Saly.
This family is on the brink of Civil War.
Mobland.
The hit original series is now streaming on Paramount
Plus.
We are the Harrogans.
Don't know the net?
And Google us.
From the underworld of Guy Ritchie.
Do you want to step up the ladder?
I won't come up dead.
Starring Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, and Helen Mirren.
Do I have to do everything myself?
You want to want?
I'll give you a more.
Mobland.
New season is now streaming on Paramount Plus.
Now, Guy that we thought was going to get absolutely paid this summer.
Oh, man.
All time wrong take.
I thought Logan Stanley was going to, don't worry, buddy, I got you.
I thought Logan Stanley was going to get Zadurov money.
And I think he thought that too.
It happens to one or two free agents every year where they just ran out of time and got screwed.
$1.5 million with the Islanders.
His loss is the Islanders gain.
That's a good deal for them.
Listen, you don't have to love that player.
No.
But $1.5 million for Logan Stanley.
That's this deal.
Yes.
I think every team in the league should have been looking at this if you need D help.
Like just to have your extra defenseman for this little.
And I think this talented in Logan Stanley.
I don't think Logan Stanley is a $1.5 million player.
No, he's not.
I think he's worth much more than that.
And it's a good move by Matthew Darsh.
I think a law team should have been looking at this.
Versatile deal too.
Like if the Islanders make the playoffs, great, fine.
Keep them.
Extend them.
Do whatever you want.
If you are out of the playoff picture.
Yep.
You know what you could do?
Like trading for a $1.5 million, Logan Stanley.
He was worth something at this past trade.
Happens to be six foot seven.
Happens to be six foot seven.
Like I know he just signed late September, essentially missed Islanders camp.
But like he's going to, like, I think.
I think it wasn't he's not good enough.
It was just unfortunate circumstances.
I think he asked for too much money.
He probably asked for too much money.
And every year the music stops and somebody's left.
And there's a few guys like Druand's not signed, Peron's not signed.
There's a few guys that are out there that it's sort of surprising that they don't have.
Is Drew Ann not signed?
No.
Looking at the list again based on points from last year.
Teresanko's out there.
Bunting's still out there.
JVR.
Taves doesn't count.
Perron,
Riley Smith.
You skipped right over
of Hendrick.
Yeah, and Marcus Johan.
It doesn't really count.
Marcus Johansson's in Sweden.
Yeah, Marcus Johansson is Sweden.
Yeah, there's a few guys.
Those guys.
They have.
Adamann reeks a guy.
That's a guy.
There's a bunch of guys.
I,
no one's going to look at this.
Luke Coonan.
What?
28-year-old Luke Coonan.
Come on.
Luke Cunning with 10 points in 42 games last year.
That might not be a guy.
Oh, no.
Yeah, 62 games.
My bad.
It's all defense.
He's just all defense.
I understand the apprehension around expansion.
I look at a list like this.
Like these are the free agents.
I look at the waivers list.
I look at I think I think the league could support it.
Michael Bunting should be on a team.
Yes.
That's crazy.
Is it weird to you that Philip Kirschab's available?
No.
UFA with no QO?
He was pretty highly touted at one point, was he not?
At one point is being a key word.
You know?
Yeah.
I think there's a reason a lot of people give up on a 26-year-old.
Yeah.
I don't think it's there.
He's one of those guys.
Yeah.
I think we're all just out there waiting for, like, who's the next William Carlson?
The next guy where you're like, this guy's poo.
And then he frigging shows up and scores 40 goals.
You know, there's got to be one.
It becomes a decade-long linchpin to an entire hockey club, which William Carlson is.
Totally.
I think he's maybe the most important player in the Vegas Golden Knights.
It's not named Jack Eichael.
He's extremely good.
Yeah, incredible.
He's extremely good.
And no disrespect to Mitch, but you saw what happened when Carlson was in and when he wasn't in the playoffs, right?
What a difference that made.
By the way, as the resident beverage goblin on this show?
Look at that's lined up.
I think this is the new record.
Yeah.
So I got water.
I got coffee.
I got tea and I got bubbly because I'm coughing like a fiend and I'm so sorry to everybody listening.
And you got a lozange.
And I got a lozenge.
And I'm just trying to, basically, I'm just trying to, basically, I'm just.
trying to hold it down. For whatever reason, I get this annoying tickle in my throat whenever I get
a little sick. And then I start coughing. You guys never have this problem. When you guys have a cold,
you never get like, but bad that. Well, I don't have asthma. Yeah, maybe that's what it is.
Asthma guy. Yeah, I had to show Jesse and Steve, just so you guys know, I had to, I had to run for
a medical appointment last night. And I have a now an arrow chamber again, which is basically like
a blue Darth Mater mask that you put on. And it also makes a harmonica sound. So you draw
attention to yourself while you look like a fucking idiot.
And, uh, I was like, is that construction?
Yeah.
No, it's just my and it just makes, it runs.
It's like,
no, it's just my inhaler.
I got it last night.
Oh, man, maybe I'll show it off on the stream.
It's embarrassing, though.
Yes.
Ah, you think asthma is your ally.
I don't know why you ever thought that.
It's serious.
Now, we had a crazy, like, you know, Jesse,
One of the things I think that we really, that we, all three of us really were worried about last week was losing Ryan Twerberg.
I was to Waivers.
Ah, yes.
We haven't had the follow up.
And Ryan Twerberg has been marked safe from waivers.
When you see the list of people that went on waivers, 71 people yesterday.
Just yesterday.
You go, wow, how did Ryan Twerberg make it past that?
Yeah.
I'm ridiculous.
But you love me, though.
You do.
I think we did I said that Turvberg has a better chance of being claimed than Marilyn and
Maryland did end up getting claimed I was you were more right about that to be worried well
you know I still am really funny about how the Vancouver markets framing that they're like we have
targeted this player for a long time I'm like what was holding you back the conditional seventh like
I think some media are doing that fans are like what yeah the whole appeal going on waivers for them
instead of...
I'm sure the ceiling for Maryland
is higher, but not the recent play.
Yeah, and can we just...
Is Thadjord Demko ever going to play again?
I don't know.
Like every...
What year in the last...
Since COVID when he went on that crazy run
where it hasn't started like this?
I guess maybe the year they went to the second round.
He makes Anthony Stollers look like Glenn Hall.
Like, yeah.
It's...
Yeah, when he plays, he's great.
When's he going to do that?
Julian had a good, like, reasoning behind why a team would take a reasonable bet on
Maryland because he is still 24.
And we had the Dennis Hilderby thing about the young buck 25-year-old.
So there's still a chance on a goaltender who showed really good HL numbers.
And in those earlier stints in Ottawa, you're like, oh, there might be something there
in like the 24-25 season.
So Vancouver, who's in a position to just lose a bunch of games this season, is like,
okay, here's a free chance.
Let's just see if he still is ass or not.
Maybe they're like, our goaltending's not bad enough.
They can be doing that too where it's like we want to play the tank game.
Like I know it's preseason.
There are some things though where you can be like, okay, this is a problem.
I don't think Ottawa expected to lose them either.
No.
Yeah, I agree with you there.
But like that the game in Toronto between the Leafs and Sends, the preseason one.
Oh boy.
Yuck.
I think that's why they thought he could just go through waivers.
Yeah.
People have eyes.
The Canucks must have seen this.
There is game footage.
No, those shouldn't have been goals.
It's not even they shouldn't have been goals.
It's like, like the Willie Tavares one, it's like, okay, that's a nice pass, but also where are you going?
Yeah.
Yeah.
And like Tavar's just reading them down low, okay, I'm essentially going to pass it to Rasevik off his, yeah, he looked awful.
I think it's interesting, too, that the Canucks had waiver priority number one, and he goes right there.
So, like, maybe there were other teams in league who also had, like, interest in them.
And maybe there is a conditional future considerations to get, like how they traded for Jonas Johansson, and they got future considerations Tampa did back.
Like, maybe there was a future considerations for Maryland, but I don't know.
Do you think—
I'm just speculating stuff?
Do you think that anybody ever gets a call and go, hey, so about those future considerations?
How about the future is now and we consider it?
Sometimes.
Future considerations used to be.
There's a pick in the Lindross trade tree.
It must have been between Colorado and I guess Calgary.
Okay.
I think Theron Fleury going from Calgary to Colorado was part of it.
There was future considerations involved in the deal and it was a first round pick.
And if I'm not mistaken, it was Robin Ruggier.
Oh.
Yeah.
Wow.
Okay.
That's not cool.
Future considerations is just nothing, usually.
Wow. Okay.
All right.
I like that.
Right?
Imagine that happened.
It's a second round pick for Jonas Johansson.
We'd all lose our minds.
That would be crazy.
I do want,
I need Julian to follow up on what that ends up being
whenever it is,
whenever that favor is called in.
Because that's how I look at it.
I look at it's like a,
here's,
I'm going to give you a favor and you're going to hit me back later.
Like mafia style.
You know, breeze wise, like.
That weird blues oilers trade after the offer sheets?
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, that was weird.
I like in baseball when they just trade money.
They got this relief pitcher for cash considerations.
I'm like, that's kind of sick.
Yeah, I respect it.
Yeah, I respect it.
Here's 50 grand.
We sold them.
We sold them.
And this is going to pay our, you know, our in-house catering for the year or something like that.
Okay, so available on waivers, or at least they were, they won't be by the time this show airs.
but Loron Pursua in Anaheim, Henry Okiharu in Boston, Yuso Valamaki in, in Carolina.
Formerly, there's a lot of former Leafs here.
Former Leaf draft pick Dominic Tonantino.
Toninato.
Toninato.
Hey, they're Keith.
I don't see Vinnie Burgini here.
That's awesome.
He never played the Leaf.
He never even played in the Leaf system, eh?
He went right to Colorado for some reason.
John Michael Lyle's trade or something.
He was involved.
I think they might have just let him walk.
Okay.
Vinnie Hittestroza is being cut loose by the avalanche as well.
Colin Blackwell by the stars.
Like that player.
Yeah, I like him too.
Sam Lafferty by the Panthers.
Conblankwell didn't make the stars?
Well, he's waived.
It doesn't mean that he won't play.
Right.
Wow.
That's a player.
That's absolutely a player.
What do you think about Sam Lafferty and his Leafs tenure?
I thought he was okay.
He was pretty good for,
like a couple months.
And then they gave him up for nothing and we're like
David Combs, our guy.
It was a fifth round pick and he
got off to a good start in Vancouver and we were like,
damn it.
But then it was.
And then it went away.
He regressed to Sam Lafferty.
But he's still in the league.
John Beecher, who was a panther for,
I'm sorry, a Bruin for a while,
was cut loose by the Panthers as well.
And I say cut loose.
Like they can always come back and play.
A lot of former Bruins firsts on waivers.
Yes.
Interesting.
Elya Lubbushkin and Nick Purbex in Nashville.
Two right-handed defensemen.
Yeah.
And I thought, like,
Lubushkin was a signing for them.
Like, that was something they actively sought out.
If the ducks had any space,
and I don't know how they're going to navigate it, obviously.
Like, we were, the way we were looking at their decor, like a month ago,
a number of these guys could make that.
team.
Yeah.
Lubushkin,
wasn't he a duck before?
I can't remember.
Like Perbix.
Perbix was a guy.
Yes, he was.
In Tampa, he was very much a guy.
And in Nashville, he is very much not.
Big Save Dave in New Jersey.
Sure.
Colin White in New Jersey.
Okay.
Player.
Player.
Yeah.
Vitech Vecch.
He used to be a player.
No longer the same player.
Let's say,
I'm just kind of go through the Sammy Blay,
former Leaf last year.
Yes.
I just keep going here.
Is that a Bullduke brother?
I think it is a Bulldoch brother.
How many Bulldogs do you think there are?
Sam Bullduke.
And Xavier Burgoe.
Was he not like a higher pick for them?
I think so.
So was Tyler Boucher.
Dylan Garand up there for the Rangers, a goalie.
Philip Tomasino.
Is it a guy Christian Kairu?
Thank you, Hayden.
Yeah, just me and Adam on our stream found out that Christian
Kairu,
is Jordan Kyrie's brother.
Yes.
Yeah.
That is the thing.
Elias Hampsov, I would expect.
Callie Rosen's still here.
And Nick Abruzizi right after him.
There's a lot of leaves.
A lot of leaves.
I think it was 17 former leaves.
Crazy.
Jacob Peltier.
Mad Sogards.
Matt Sogarde's a name.
With the lightning?
I didn't know that.
Billy Heinola?
That's crazy.
Villi Heinola was supposed to be a player.
Alexander Holtz, I want to say,
And the one that really stuck out to me at the bottom there, Jesse, but it's Henry Thrun of the Jets.
A thrunner.
Oh, Hank.
Yeah.
I wish he worked out.
But, yeah.
Yeah.
Anyway, it's a lot of guys.
A lot of guys.
And you can see that, you know, had the Leafs not snuck Torberg through early, how much trouble they would have been.
Look at all those Panthers.
None of them are Alan Walsh client.
Boko Imam.
Oh, who made the Panthers.
Who made the Panthers.
Yeah.
Made the deepest forward group.
Nice.
Maybe in hockey.
That's a surprise.
Good for him.
Yeah, the Panthers and the Canadians loaded up with the most guys on waivers.
Yeah.
Boko making it is kind of nuts.
And I think like it's a heck of a story.
We actually interviewed him a couple years ago.
Yes, he did.
And that guy is, he's like a different version.
of what Sean Dersey was, which he's,
Sean Dersey is like philosophical positive.
Boko's just raw positivity.
And it was kind of neat to, you know,
because he's had such a, like,
he had a great story.
Like, if you go back and you listen to it,
like, he was like the only black kid in Montreal
playing hockey in his,
in his neighborhood and like,
and, you know, obviously had a name that stuck out
in French slash English Canada, both sides.
And like, it was, it's a very,
it's a hell of a story that he's been able to do this for this long.
And like, when he was with the,
penguins a couple years ago.
He wasn't, and they were bad.
He wasn't making the roster. He made
this roster. He has a goal,
doesn't he? Yeah. I want to say
he scored, I want to say with the coyotes.
And he's a bruiser.
He's got, yeah, like he just fits that
DNA. You want to hear a little bit of Boco talking
about opening night roster?
Which is really cool. All right, here we go.
I was very excited to finally get out there.
You know, with a new jersey, of course.
And yeah, I was pretty excited.
I'm happy how things went.
I just want to tell you about this opportunity
because you're with a team like this that has the big aspirations they have.
No, it's great. It's just from day one from training camp.
Actually, from the moment I actually signed with the team.
Just talking with Bill Zito, I knew the standard here was, you know, pretty high up.
I got the chance to come down here in the summer too for a few weeks just to train.
And right away, I saw the standard was a little different.
And I'm all for it.
I'm all for it, so it's something I'm really excited about.
I adore him.
Yeah, he's cool.
If you got the time to go back and listen to that interview,
Adam's so right about just a positive person with the right attitude.
And I'm not surprised that he fits in there and the guys around there fell in love with him.
And now he's on this roster.
It's really cool.
It's a great story.
I did get a chuckle out of all the guys the Panthers have and all the guys that they've signed.
They've somehow found a way to become an even more violent team.
and then Boko and Mama made the team too.
I'm like, holy, every single person on that roster,
including guys who might not even play, they'll go.
There are some huge personalities in that room, too, when you think about it.
That's the crazy thing about the Panthers, like, violent on the ice,
but off the ice, with the exception of, like, Sam Bennett,
who I can't even remember a sentence that he's spoken.
Brady, Matthew, Barkoff's hilarious when he decides to talk.
They all go to Derry.
Yeah, Brad Marsh and, like, Boko's a talker.
right? So like it was, by the way, I was thinking, I'm like, who's got the deeper voice?
Julian McKenzie or Boko? Because Julian's got one of the deepest voices I think about it. Boko.
Boko? Yeah. I can't even do it. Yeah. No, I'm going to say Boko. It's heavy. It's good.
I want to go through some of your predictions this year, guys, because it is regular season Eve and it's fun to do, you know, have a little bit of fun with this stuff.
So we're going to go and obviously we did our predictions for teams. So we're not going to do that.
These are player predictions. Okay. So.
I'm going to go real easy off the top.
Who leads the league in scoring?
Now, remember, it was Connor McDavid last year by eight points.
He had 138, and I believe it was Kucharoff or McKinnon with 130,
and the other had 127.
Who leads the league in scoring this season?
I'm not going to overthink this.
Connor McDavid.
Okay.
He's the greatest player alive.
He's hell-bent on winning.
He led the league by eight points.
I don't see that going down.
Jesse. I'm not going to overthink this. I think it is Macklin Celebrini.
He was right there amongst the leaders for the ArtRoss Trophy last season.
And this season, if he takes a step, he should win his first one. And this is about the time when he should in his career.
And I think with the hopefully improving San Jose Sharks and that he can just bump his point total a little bit more and I should win it.
It'll be interesting to see what a deeper Sharks team does to Macklin's production.
Like, maybe they're a little less dependent on them or maybe it frees them up to do even more.
I mean, he's going to draw the number one assignment no matter what.
I see it where his point totals will go up, but then the rest of his team will also go up and then the team will just be better.
Because what was happening last year is just unsustainable.
It was just him to create a winning team, right?
You can't have that.
Like what was second place on the sharks?
Like 60 points?
Right.
And Wilson Smith.
Yeah.
Like not even close.
Not he led the team by such a wide margin.
I'm trying to look up their power play units.
And because of the preseason, it's all messed up.
But like, producer drew with a sneaky fantasy pick, Luca Kenyoni.
Oh.
Because apparently he's on their power play.
Wasn't even on the team last year.
Interesting.
The point totals last year were 115 for match.
Macklin and then Will Smith had 59.
So I think this year it's like 130 and then the next guy's at like 80.
Yeah.
You know, it should be how it should be.
Oh my God.
So wait, there were two other guys who even had 20 goals.
Yeah, for the goal total.
It was Macklin 45, Will Smith 24, Colling graph 21, and then Tyler Defoli 19.
Wow.
Holy cow.
He's a one man wrecking ball
Somehow only eight power play goals
Oh my god, what a monster
That's crazy
What a monster
All right, good pick
Yeah, I like that
I don't, McDavid is the pick, right?
Yeah
Like that's the betting favorite
Now I went with that
Yeah
I'm okay, so we think McDavid
But across the board
No, I picked so
Oh yeah, sorry, you think Celebrating
Who's your pick?
My pick, I'm gonna sew Kutjaov
And I just say that
because so much of Tampa's, Tampa's such a great regular season team.
And I say that because when the Leafs were a really great regular season team and not making it out of the first round,
everybody made that asterisk.
So I'm doing it to them now.
They are a great regular season team and not winning in the first round.
Okay.
Huchrov is the offense.
He has not been a positive factor in the playoffs in recent members.
No, that's true.
But it's not a playoff award, is it?
No, it's not.
Right?
Should be.
Yeah.
They should have a regular season and playoff version.
of every award.
That'd be crazy.
Okay.
Let's get a little weird here.
Let's go Selke.
And Selke's a really weird one.
For those of you that don't know, it's defensive forward.
But usually that defensive forward still has to score.
Like they're not going to give it to David Kompf or Stephen Lawrence or Colton Sizzins or somebody like that who is a, now this is a prime shutdown guy who doesn't have much to offer on the offensive side.
This is really easy to me.
So you guys go.
Well, there's no one at Copotar in the league anymore.
That used to be the free square.
right?
You used to get a lot of votes.
If Jesse says Austin Matthews, I'm going to laugh.
No.
I think I don't, I don't want to influence your decisions because I think this is like,
I put money on it right now and they're going to get it.
Sorry, Jesse's right.
And I also know what you're saying.
Let's all do it at the same time.
Alexander Barkoff.
Damn it.
I think Barkoff.
I think Barkoff won the Selke yesterday.
Yeah.
Like, I don't know.
You know what?
I was like, well, Suzuki, he might.
Like, he'll be right there to challenge him.
I just think it's going to, he's back.
You know, everybody's going to be like,
we forgot about Barkov and how good he is.
Let's give him the trophy again.
If Marksdrave has a good year, they're going to be like,
it's because Barkoff's up.
Yeah.
You know what I mean?
I feel bad.
I feel bad for the league.
I feel bad for the voters because this past spring.
They had to be like, oh, I guess I actually got to like,
look up how everyone did.
Yeah, instead of just giving it to Barkoff.
Yeah.
Yeah, Barkoff.
Okay.
Barcoff.
Okay.
All right.
Now, Nick Suzuki is going to be right there, though.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
Do you have a hot take about the Rocket Richard Richard Trophy this year?
Oh, boy.
Because I think, here's my hot take.
Who won it?
Caulfield?
Caulfield.
Yeah.
I think 51?
Yeah, which is kind of low.
The scoring is somewhat down in the league, weirdly enough, and it's not as centralized as it was a few years ago,
where a bunch of guys were getting all the goals.
Down from like a couple years ago, but not.
Not down down.
But it is slightly down overall,
apparently.
Not that it matters.
Does he repeat?
Does a guy like Austin Matthews have a jump back here?
Does Connor McDavid,
remember the other couple of years ago?
He was like,
I can score goals too.
He just decided to score 60.
And then he was?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Like is it, you know,
do we have Stephen Stamco's who had 40 last year?
jump back in and just go,
I'm power play specialist.
Hayden has his hand up so he can say Carol Capriza.
No, I'm actually going to say,
Drew and I were talking at the course in Clubhouse,
and I convinced him to put some money down on Cutter Gochay.
I think that's a, I was going to bring him up next.
Oh.
That's a good pick.
Oh.
He dropped 40.
Pretty good odds, too.
And he, the thing is, the ducks are not as good this year.
They're just not.
They're not as deep.
So more of it relies on him in Carlson.
Yeah, but who's getting him in the puck?
Carlson.
From the back end.
Oh, Laconee.
Yeah.
On the power play.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's pretty good.
It is pretty good.
Pasta.
I think Lecombe's going to get Norris votes this year, by the way.
Like legit Norris votes.
If they're...
But that's besides the point.
If they're in the playoffs.
Yep.
I think he's phenomenal.
Playing half an hour a night,
Quenville just turns him into Duncan Keith.
give you know what he's got three of them give me Austin Austin Matthews
give me Austin whoa now there's a take I I mean I want him to win it I want him to win it
really if he's as healthy as he looks yep he's the easy pick very easy pick we wouldn't have
even hesitated that 69 goal season seemed so long ago but he was the best goal scorer
hockey and it wasn't close.
Him.
Jesse, do you agree?
I don't think
it's going to be Austin.
Oh!
We, or
I incorrectly gave the
last year's
Rock of Richard to Cole Cawfield. It was actually
Nathan McKinnon, who had
53 goals. Oh.
And I think this season
I'm going to give it to
the guy who won the Rocker
it last year, or the year before that.
Okay.
And that's Leon Drysidal.
How did it take us this long to say his name?
I don't know.
It's a little unfair.
Do we not even bring him up?
Oh, no.
I think Drysidal and McDavid connect this year under Babcock even more.
And Drysiddle is going to be the beneficiary of more goals.
So I see him getting back into that Rock and Richard race and winning this year.
Okay.
All right.
I got one.
That's my guess.
Vesna trophy, but you can't say Vasilesky.
Can I throw somebody else for the rocket before you move on?
Of course.
Jason Robertson.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
If you're looking for somebody probably longer odds,
I don't know what the odds are on him right now,
but I think longer odds Jason on his contract season,
the one-year bet year.
Like this could be 55 goals for Jay-Roll.
Well, you know what?
Turning down that $125 million from Seattle seemed crazy at the time.
Now I'm thinking like that might be the smartest player in the league.
I think that might have been the smartest decision of the office.
He's going to make 20,
million. Yeah, he is. He deserves $20 million a year. No one is more motivated this year to have a
great year than Jason Robertson because there might be tens of millions of dollars of difference
on the table depending on how his season goes. So I can see him winning the rocket.
Damn.
Vezna and I can't say Vasilevsky.
Just because that's a free space and I didn't want to, you know what I mean?
I'm going with Igor Shusirgan. Really? Wow.
He had a 9-12 last year amongst one of the top goalies and goals.
saved above expectation.
And I think if the Rangers are just even a playoff team, he's going to come out with like a
920 and drag them there.
So I think Igor is my dark horse better.
Do you think he can win it without them making it?
No.
Even if like even if he's got a 920 and he's like lights out, but they just suck.
No.
You got to win games too.
You got to win.
Yeah.
That's why nobody noticed how good of a season Igor had last season because it didn't matter.
Right.
They were last.
That's why I didn't pick him in fantasy because I'm like his safe percentage is going to
high, but his wins, I'm worried. If he picks up
zero wins, who care? Yeah. Being that
good, and the Rangers
were that bad.
So I think if they're just mediocre, they
squeak in, but he's unbelievable. I can see
him getting the Vesna. Tristan
Jari. No, stop
it. Edmonton's going to win a... No, my
fantasy team hinges on this, so I'm going to
say Jake Ottinger. Good
pick.
Jake Ottinger. Okay, next one.
James Norris Memorial Trophy given to the top
defenseman. Now,
this one is a bit weird because oftentimes it's like well it's going to be kale or quinn
it could be it's not going to be out of that last year it could be zach you know what i mean
first names uh well because they're that good right they are that they're all that good you say
it could be mike Oprah Mike Matheson no it's just it's most common that was the only mic I could
come up with this playing defense right now um okay so the reason I'm going to do this again is because
I want the interest to be more interesting than these guys take
Kale McCar, Quinn Hughes, and Zach Werenski out of it.
I was going to.
Oh.
All right, Steve.
Give us your pick.
Matthew Schaefer.
You think he wins the Norris?
The Norris.
He should have got more Norris noise last year.
He is maybe the most important defenseman to his team in the whole league.
Yeah.
I mean, with Logan Stanley there, maybe that's under threat.
Right.
Right. He's going to take away some of those minutes.
If his production stays flat, like, you look at what he was able to do last year,
and you realize that, like, out of the gate, they were like, oh, let's take it easy on the kid.
The season prior to last year's domination, he played 17 OHL games.
And Canada basically fell apart once he got injured.
because he got injured at the at the world juniors.
Oh, right, right, right.
I think it was collarbone or something like that.
I was like the Olympics.
No, it would have been nice.
The one that they, it was embarrassing.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I'm going to say Matthew Schaefer.
Okay.
All right.
Jesse, do you have a pick outside of those three guys?
And I know it's an unfair question, but that's the way it goes.
Tell me why it's not Lane Hudson.
Because, Jesse, not everything runs through your habs.
Hold on, why are we answering this question telling me why it is Lane Hudson?
No, no.
Perception matters.
Perception matters and Lane Hudson has a perception problem where voters don't think he's good enough defensively to win the Norse.
That's why.
But it's outside of those guys.
So if I'm picking number four, right, on the list, I think last season with the point totals,
Lane Hudson was like many, many places above where Matthew Schaefer finished, right?
Like it wasn't even close in terms of Norris Trophy voting.
I thought they were close.
I don't know.
Here.
Let me just look at it.
Bring it up.
Yeah, yeah.
Norris trophy voting last season because I'd be words here.
Lane Hudson finished sixth.
Sixth.
I think voters respect him.
And if he takes another step this season.
Schaefer at 12 is sinful.
Norse Trophy voting went like this.
Werenzki, McCar, Dahlene, Bouchard, Cider, Hudson, Quinn Hughes, Heiskenin, Carlson, Sanderson, Radish, then Schaefer at 12.
I think voters respect Lane Hudson.
Radish above Schaefer.
And if we think he- How many of those top, how many of those first-place votes were outside of Montreal, though?
We could look it up, but I don't care to look it up.
Well, you got three of them?
Yeah.
And I'm not trying to say that he doesn't deserve it.
them, what I'm trying to say is
I don't know that
I necessarily agree, Jess, only
because here's the thing. Sometimes with voters,
you got to remember, these are like, it's the writers
that vote on this, isn't it?
Schaefer didn't get a single first second or third
place vote. If there's anything I can tell you about my
journalist friends, is sometimes they're
a little bit like, can you guys just shut up about
this guy? And you can see it in the votes.
There's fatigue. Yeah, it's like,
could you just shut up a boat? And Lane
Hudson, Montreal, rightfully,
is really pumped about him.
as you should be.
And everybody else is like,
can you just shut the fuck up?
Like, please shut up.
And it's not because it's anything other than exuberance
coming out of Quebec,
but I think people are like,
well, he's not,
he hasn't done what cider's done.
He hasn't done with Carlson's done.
He hasn't done, whatever.
The Norris of all the trophies
is such a reputational award.
Yes.
Like some of the picks in previous years
are embarrassing.
Like Eric Carlson winning it in San Jose.
I know he had 100 points.
He was not the best defenseman
in the league that year.
By definition.
So under your rules, outside of the guys I would like to pick in terms of McCar, Werenstki, or Hughes,
last year looking at how it went after you take out Dahline McCar Werenstke, Sider,
and then Bouchard's point leading season for defensemen,
Lane Hudson was next.
So the next guy up is Hudson.
Or is it Bouchard?
No.
I think if it's not Bouchard?
If Evan Bouchard was ever going to win an Orestro?
it was last season.
Really?
The fact that he didn't win it last season,
he'll never win one.
He's got 95 points.
If you want to talk about guys
with a perception problem.
Yeah,
that's the guy.
Yeah.
The next closest in terms of point totals
from a defenseman was 81.
He had 95 and he couldn't win it then.
Yeah.
Well, you're right.
He had the Eric Carlson year
and they still wouldn't reward him.
He's never winning it ever in his life.
Where did he place?
Fourth.
Man.
That's a bit of robbery.
So he's never going to win it.
I thought he should have been.
at least top three, but his defensive skills aren't there.
And I think Lane Hudson at 21 with the 78 point season he had last season,
if his defensive abilities grow a little more,
I think he's easily the next guy up.
And Matthew Schaefer will be there right there too.
Wow.
That's crazy.
I notice a lot of guys had Bouchard 5th.
Yeah.
And I think they felt silly leaving a 95 point guy off their balance.
Because it usually is the defenseman who leads the league in points, wins the Norris.
And last season they're like, we don't like Bouchard, which I thought was a travesty.
It is.
And you want to talk about perception.
What if he gets five more points?
Oh, then you have to.
Yeah.
Then you have to.
Then the direct comparisons are at Carlson.
I thought by the standard, the voters set out the last few seasons where if you just put up so many points, it's like egregious.
You get the Norris.
Evan Bouchard did that.
and yet he didn't get it.
It's the Scotty Pippin.
Not making, no, no, sorry, not Scotty Pippin.
Who didn't make Team USA?
Oh, friggin.
Isaiah, it's the Isaiah Thomas meme.
I met the criteria.
You can do it, go ahead.
I met the criteria.
That's all.
Lady Bing.
Evan Bouchard met the criteria.
I'm saving a couple.
Lady Bing recognized as sportsmanship
and gentlemanly conduct combined with high standard of play.
How do you predict this?
I know, that's why it's fun.
Predict it.
Go.
Kobe Ben.
I don't know.
Cole Cawfield?
Who won it last year?
I don't even know.
Lady Bing.
Where's Lady Bing?
Last year's Lady Bing winner was Cole Cawfield.
There you go.
Popatarr came second, Jake Sanderson.
I'm going to say
Connor Hellebuck.
Guys who win the Lady Bing
are more likely to get into the Hall of Fame
than guys who win the Rocket.
That's crazy.
That's statistical.
That's a crazy stat.
Yeah.
It is a respect award, for sure.
It is
It is
High points, no penalties
Basically a popularity contest
It is like most of these players are pretty well liked
Like how
Okay
Player who exhibited the best type of sportsmanship
And gentlemanly conduct
Combined with a high standard of playing ability
How
Unless you're
A
Coach, player, or official?
Are you supposed to judge that?
I don't know who votes on this one.
I believe it's the writers.
This one too, yeah.
I believe it's the writers, yeah.
They usually just go, okay, who has a lot of points
and not a lot of penalties?
Which, I mean, that is supposed to be what it is.
Honor, playing with honor.
Yeah, no Panther can win it, basically.
Oh, I don't, don't worry.
I don't think they're losing sleepover.
Barkoff?
Barkoff?
Barkoff can win it.
just by being such a gentleman in comparison.
Yeah, that's true.
And he could just be normal crazy on any other team,
but versus the Panthers is your backdrop.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, give me Caulfield.
I don't know.
Okay.
Mitch Marner.
Mitch Marner.
Okay, that's a good one.
That is a good pick.
That's a good pick.
It's a good pick.
Okay.
He doesn't take a ton of penalties.
He puts up a lot of points.
Good pick.
I'm saving a couple.
Let's get a little weird.
Who wins the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award?
Well, only one man decides that one.
I know.
Who's Mark picking this year, guys?
Not Connor.
Not Connor McDavid.
Oh, you're right.
Good point.
Remember the year he picked Truba?
Uh-huh.
He's picked a bunch of non-captains.
But Truba was captain.
He was captain in New York.
But did he?
Okay.
Hmm.
Hmm.
Hmm.
He's going to give it to like, give me Drew Doughty.
That's a good one.
Yeah.
Yeah.
First year is captain.
That's a good one, actually.
I'm actually really challenging Jesse and Steve right now.
That's not an easy question to answer.
And Drew Dowdy makes the most sense because he's getting his revenant captaincy.
It is the most ridiculous trophy that we have.
Yeah.
Like not trying to disrespect Mark Messier.
It's the only award that is voted on by one person.
I am actively trying to disrespect Mark Messia.
Okay.
You don't speak for me.
By the way, there's already an award for leadership.
Yes.
It's the king's Lansing.
The dumbest award in the universe.
Yeah, but this is the Mark Messier one.
Last year's winner was Landisg, year before, Ovechkin.
23, 24 was the Truba season.
23 was Stamcoast, 22, Copatar,
20, 21, Bergeron, 20, Zorado.
Nick Felino won it.
Oh, my gosh.
Derek England won it.
Derek England?
Yeah, he was a non-captain.
That was for the Vegas inaugural year.
I'm not going to ask you about the Masterton or the King Clancy.
Why not?
I am going to ask you about this.
Pull up.
No, no, no, we got to do this.
Be crazy.
Pull up the criteria for King Clancy.
I've got it.
You have it?
Given to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice
and has made a humanitarian contribution to his community.
So we have the King Clancy that is for leadership and like generosity.
And then we have the Mark Messier Award, which is just.
for leadership.
I think keep your money.
What's what Mark thinks?
Yeah.
The King Clancy is a real award.
The Mark Messier is Mark gets to pick a guy he likes.
What the fuck are we doing?
It doesn't belong in the hockey hall of fan.
It belongs on the set of ESPN.
That's what it is.
Oh yeah.
Like here's Mark's guy.
It's like on Thanksgiving in the NFL where they give out the Turduccan for the Madden Award.
Like that's, that's okay.
That's fun for this game.
Yeah.
We all did it.
It's not a real thing.
Yeah.
No, no, no, no, but no, you put it like in the Football Hall of Fame and you go, this is one of ours.
What's right about?
Mark Messia just gets pick a guy.
When we were in Buffalo, wasn't it like the, it was, it's almost these August trophies are there, right?
You've got the Jack Adams and the Con Smyth and the heart and they all have these big, beautiful pieces that are artistic.
And then the Mark Messia Awards, like I went to Walmart and bought one of their generic trophies.
Like it is the most bizarre looking award.
Look it up.
It's right here.
It's crazy.
It's right here.
Like, what is happening?
Like, I could have made that.
I could have made that.
That?
You bought that at a trophy store and gave it to a house league championship team.
The shittiest trophy.
It's just wild.
And it's less impressive in person.
Adam's right.
Dude, bring up all the trophies.
Yeah, that makes it look big.
Hockey has beautiful works of art.
And they're all from like the 1700s, you know.
Yes.
They were made by silver smiths in the,
in a forge somewhere.
At least two of them were at the last supper.
Like,
and then you have this.
And that makes it look good.
When you see it in person,
it's small,
it's not particularly shiny.
And the angle that they're shooting on...
I have better trophies from minor soccer.
What is this shit?
The angle they shoot it on too
makes it look like the hockey players
is kind of cool.
When you see that illusion up close,
it does not look good.
That's garbage,
man.
Everything about it sucks.
Like,
okay,
Messi is a Hall of Famer great.
Cool, great.
One guy votes on it and there's already a leadership award.
Who asked for this?
They must have asked Gretzky and Gretzky said I'm not doing that yet.
You can't name an award after me yet.
There should be a Gretzky award.
But you made it for something that already exists.
We should make a bigger deal of the King Clancy.
The King Clancy is for leadership and contribution.
To the community.
Hey,
in comparison,
here's the Clancy.
That's beautiful.
That's stunning.
Wow,
it wasn't put together
with an Allen key at IKEA.
That's crazy.
Look this beautiful trophy.
It really does look like you could get the Messier Award from Toys R Us.
This is beautiful.
Yeah.
It's beautiful and it's probably not top five.
Yeah.
You want to talk about the how each trophies voted on?
Sure.
Meaning the King Clancy versus the Messier one.
So the King Clancy, each NHL team submits a nominee for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy.
The winner is selected by a committee consisting of Commissioner Gary Bettman and former winners
of the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, as well as the NHL Foundation Player Award.
So we go back to the Messia.
You've got to be in with Gar.
Well, it's also the other winners and everything.
I think they come to a good consensus about who contributes the most.
And then the Messier one.
Mark Messier solicit suggestions from team and league personnel to compile a list of potential
candidates for the award. However, the selection of the three finalists and the ultimate
winner is Messiers alone. Stop. So we asked Mark. Just you could have shortened that. We asked Mark.
How were there that many words? How did you find that many words?
AI. What is all of that guys? Claude, make me something that looks like we did work here.
Oh, God. Anyway, yeah, it's crazy. I did a bunch of research for the Hall of Fame this summer and
this award stands out like a ridiculously sore thumb.
Four more to go.
It does not belong.
Four more to go.
And I think we're running out of time on the show anyway.
Four more to go.
Jack Adams and how will it not be Mike Babcock?
Jeez.
Because if the Oilers come in and tear it up,
Mike Babcock is, he's winning.
I think a number of voters will be afraid to put their name on that.
And that matters.
Okay.
That's fair.
That matters.
I think remember to, for anybody listening,
the Jack Adams rarely goes to the actual best coach.
It goes to the coach that made you go, oh, wow, they're better than I thought.
And like, hmm.
I don't think Babcock wins.
No?
No.
I don't think anybody's voting for that guy.
Spencer Carberry might get some noise.
That's a good one, especially if Washington has a bounce back.
Might get some noise.
My vote goes to Ryan Worsofsky of the San Jose Sharks,
Because I think the Sharks are a playoff team, and there's the big jump season,
and I think it gets rewarded with the Jack Adams.
Hayden's got one.
I think a sneaky good pick would be Jim Montgomery in St. Louis.
If they're good.
If St. Louis has a good season, I think people are going to look at that very favorably.
Montgomery falls under a funny category of could win the Jack Adams could get fired.
Which is a prime candidate for the Jack Adams, by the way.
So let me add to that list.
too embarrassed to say it, but then you threw in Jim Montgomery.
Andre Turny?
Oh, man.
In Utah.
I don't know.
You're right.
You're probably right.
I could see him winning it or the guy who replaces him when he gets fired.
Yeah.
Amazing.
You know, it could be Bruce Cassidy.
You never know.
That'd be crazy.
Listen, somebody's going to get fired early.
Bruce Cassidy's available.
You know that's going to happen.
My submission is going to be one that's a little bit too obvious, I think, but we shouldn't
overlook it.
Marty St. Louis.
Yeah.
If they win the division, I think they're supposed to be good.
I know.
Yeah, I know.
But I just feel like maybe that would be like a reputational thing.
And it's also kind of cool that a former player who won awards and won a cup and won a gold medal would also get a jackat.
Like I think writers get nostalgic about that.
I think they vote on it, don't they?
It doesn't matter.
Yep.
NHL people get nostalgic about that.
Like Marco Sturm, if the Bruins do really well.
Or.
I don't think Marco Sturm's got to have hope in hell either way.
At what, at some point.
someone's going to be like, Paul Maurice has never won one.
Has Rod?
Rod's won a Jack Adams.
And John Cooper won last year.
Finally.
Yes, his Revenant.
Yeah, Paul's got to win one.
Let's give Paul a Revenant.
Paul's got to get one.
John Cooper lost the division and won a Jack Adams.
He won the Divorogous.
He won the Jack Adams for like his fourth best season.
Yeah, it wasn't.
It was very, it was deserved for his career.
That season was not the season to give it to him.
Lindy Ruff should have won it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Hard to disagree with that.
him. They got more points
than the other guy. And way more
shocking. Like way more shocking.
Lindy was not supposed to last the season.
Right? Oh, I... You're supposed to get fired.
We thought he was going to be the first guy fired.
Yeah. And then he won the division.
And then we're just like,
ah, Sean, though. John's funny.
Hey, man, he dressed like a... He dressed like
a mobster in the Miami game. Come on.
Oh, you know, who's also pretty
funny?
Paul Buries.
Paul's got some funny things to say.
Did you see his quote about Barkoff today?
No.
I bet it was
it was awesome.
He's on his A game.
He was like, he's like, yeah, I don't really coach him.
I'm just more of a fan.
And I was like,
like that's beautiful.
Give him the trophy now.
Jim Gregory, general manager of the year.
And I actually want to ask this question
because I think there are some younger GMs
in there making waves.
And let me give you, for instance,
and I'm going to make this Toronto centric.
Let's say the Leafs are really good this year.
We don't know.
But let's say they are.
Sean Chica gets
No shot
Get some
Get some at least some votes
No who's it
Oh yeah
But again
Oh it's other
No one likes him
That matter
Is it other GMs?
Has Tulski ever won it?
No
I rest my case
Your Honor
Yeah
Like
All right
I just thought like
You know
A team that's completely
Turned itself over
Like the Leafs have
You know
Has itchy fingers
And you know
You look at
Like we thought
It was crazy
A couple years ago
When in season
Colorado traded for two goalies
Yeah
Like that was considered itchy.
And look at what the Leafs have done.
I don't even think we've made enough of that.
Give me how much they've switched.
If they're able to get Quinn Hughes done and they're really good,
give me Bill Guerin.
Oh, I like that.
And Patrick, what's his name?
In Washington.
Chris?
Is it Chris Patrick?
Craig Patrick.
Yeah.
Craig Chris?
I keep wanting to say Craig, but I think that's a different person.
Yeah, Craig Patrick was the older.
Chris Patrick Capitals.
Chris Patrick Ice Hockey, Capitals GM.
Why are you questioning me?
Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't hear you.
How dare you?
That was my fault.
The Jim Gregory Award is voted on by the NHL General Managers and a panel of league executives.
Yeah, John Chica will never win this award in his life.
Print and broadcast media vote for the Jim Gregory general manager at the year at the conclusion of the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
So NHL General Managers and a panel of league executives.
print and broadcast media.
So it's a bunch of people.
So this trophy is still not very good.
And it's still way better than the Messier Award.
Gwaven won it last year, by the way.
Oh, did he?
Oh, that's right.
And he cried.
Jimmy Nills won at three straight years.
That's so, oh, well, then Garron Kahn win it then.
Oh, yeah, totally.
The Central Division has owned it for five straight a year.
How did Lou Lamarillo win it twice?
I guess it was COVID.
I just forgot.
By staring at someone for too long and made them on
comfortable. I think it goes to Joe Sackick. Yeah, I think you're right. I think Colorado has a
great year and then everyone's like, hey, you're back in the GM seat. Here's your award back.
And it's a little bit of what he did at the deadline last year and the Kail McCarr signing, right?
Like you give him a little bit of credit for getting Wai and Cadry. Do you not?
No. Even though you're not supposed to? Yeah, there's another GM in the sea at that time, right?
Tulski won the cup $12 million under the cap. It's Tulski. It should be Tulski.
Let's go. But that's the Stanley Cup. Our little award. I think Tulsky's okay with it. I don't think he cares.
Okay, all right, last two.
And I saved these for a reason.
Calder Trophy, rookie of the year.
And I know people are going to be like, well, their league fans are going to say McKenna.
But you've got to imagine James Hagen's, Porter Martone, Ivor Stenberg.
There's some good players.
I think Stenberg is going to look really good.
I think McKenna is going to look really good.
I think Higgins is going to look really good.
Porter Martone has already looked really good.
and he's a little older.
It's a little, it's usually easier for the older rookies to win it.
I'll say Martone.
He's played about as many playoff games as he has regular season games, which is hilarious.
That's, yeah.
Jesse, do you have a thought?
Do you, do you disagree?
I think it's easy to pick Porter Martone because he's going to lead the league and goals for rookies.
Like, I don't think that's a question in terms of like his goal scoring ability.
And I'd like to pick McKenna, though, because I,
the point total, I think it'll be higher.
He has a shot.
And it's too easy just to go more tone.
It usually doesn't go that way.
So, because like last year, everybody had Demi Dove.
It doesn't work out.
There's Matthew Jaffer all of a sudden.
So I don't know.
I think the better, the smarter pick because I think the odds are going to be a little longer on McKenna.
I'd go McKenna.
He's starting the season with Tavaris and Nylander and we're like, we're already itching for,
just try him with Austin.
Like, we haven't had too many conversations about could he play with Colton Sissons.
I don't think any...
He's going to be in the top six.
Nobody on that list in terms of rookies
who are in contention for this
is going to have better teammates
than McKenna.
That's true.
That's true.
Better line mates.
Okay.
When we talk about the Calder quickly too,
is are people usually
wowed by dazzling things
or are they wowed by points?
Like what, you know,
in traditionally speaking,
like Macklin,
when he won,
did Maclin win?
I didn't even remember.
When Panarin won,
he was like 24.
I'm just thinking about that.
I'm not sure.
But there was, like, there was a time when, I think,
Barrett Jackman won at once, which is crazy.
Barrett Jackman, Sergey Samsonov won it over Joe Thornton.
Yeah, Samsonov was legitimately way better.
At the time.
Yeah.
He was older, I believe.
Yeah.
So I'm just, I'm wondering, like, what do people usually go for when they're,
when they're making those votes from what you've seen?
I do think it's largely points.
Yakopov won one.
Oh, yeah.
He won rookie of the year.
And if I'm not mistaken,
he had like,
I don't even know if he hit 40 points.
Right.
But he did that,
that really good.
Remember Don,
Don,
Sherry got all mad at him for his celebration?
And was like,
Don't just enjoy life.
And like his second game.
Jesus.
It was so silly.
So cider.
Oh,
yeah,
Beniers won it too.
Where's the Yakopov of you?
Wasn't it 23rd?
Oh, no, he didn't.
Yeah.
Oh, I thought he won it.
I'm looking for it.
Okay, well,
he led rookies in scoring then.
And he didn't.
Oh,
was Huberto.
Huberto won 12-13,
yeah.
Yakovov was not even in here.
Oh, you know why?
It was a shortened season.
And Brandon Sod was the fallout.
So Calder Trophy winners, recent memory.
Schaefer, Hudson, Bedard, Benares, Cider, Caprizov, McCar, Peterson.
Pretty good list.
Barzal, kid who won the Calder.
It is a pretty damn good list, isn't it?
Oh, yeah.
Okay.
Last thing.
Stuart Skinner, runner up in Calder Trophy voting, the 23 season.
Whoa, really?
2010-11.
won it.
Runner up,
Logan Couture,
and then the third guy,
oh crap,
where'd it go,
Jesse,
damn it.
I'm high.
This one.
Oh,
Michael,
oh, yeah,
Michael Grabner.
Wow.
This is a good,
let,
Verstigue was nominated.
Jimmy Howard.
Trent Hunter.
Trent Hunter
used to be a
video game demon.
Christian Heselius also.
That's so crazy.
Christian Houssail.
Yeah,
some names there.
He was good.
Even the recent ones, like Adam Henrique coming third and voting there.
Don't you dare say.
Tyler Johnson, the 14 season, third and colder.
He was good, man.
Two lightning players.
That's so annoying.
Shane.
Neither of them are.
You remember that one?
Yes.
The 16th.
And we thought his last name was Gostis B here.
Yeah.
Shane Gostis Bear finished higher than Connor McDaniel.
Yes.
Because of the injury, right?
Yes, yes.
What are he playing 56 games or something?
Werenzki finished third.
Dominic Kubelik came behind.
Quinn Hughes and Kale McCar for the get out of town.
Nadelcovich, Bunting.
Nadelcovich behind Robertson and Kriprizav.
That's crazy in 21.
That's crazy.
Bunting, Zegris, and Sider.
Man.
Oh, yeah, Michael Bunting.
Yeah.
Wow.
All Macklin finished behind Lane Hudson and Dustin Wolf.
By the way, back at Seneca, sneaky, sneaky waiver pickup if you didn't,
if somebody didn't draft him in your league.
I think that guy's going to score a lot of goals.
teams are nearly four?
One last quick question before we wrap the show.
Who will have the comeback season of the year?
That's funny.
One last season, and I'm going to start it off.
Matt Bay Mitchkoff.
Ah, nuts.
I'm going to say Austin.
Guy had enormous struggles last year, and then I said he'd win the rocket.
Jesse.
I don't have anybody good.
No?
Comeback player of the year?
Connor Hellebuck.
Because he will literally come back.
Stop.
What?
I'm trying to think who had down ears.
Jack Hughes because of injuries.
Oh, that's a good way.
I think Jack Hughes is primed to have a good season.
Yeah.
Better answer might be Luke Hughes.
No.
Well, no, because Jack Hughes was good the whole time.
He was just hurt.
Luke Hughes was dog poo.
I was nominated for the Calder.
You just showed me that.
I'm not putting money on Luke Hughes.
No, me either.
I'm trying to be nice.
A lot.
Yeah.
If Jack Hughes counts, then I'll take Jack Hughes.
Morgan Riley.
Jack Hughes does count.
I bet there'd be...
You know what?
I hope Morgan Riley.
I'm rooting for that.
There's like everybody that talked to me on Saturday is like,
so you really don't like Morgan Riley?
It's not that I don't like Morgan Riley.
I just don't like the way he has played the last 24 months.
Thank God the cap's going up for that Luke Hughes contract.
Yeah.
Yep.
Well, okay.
So I was wondering in fantasy, I'm like, do I take Dougie Hamilton then?
Because he kept falling.
He's a good.
fantasy and I got him and I think he might run the power play right.
Dougie Hamilton is not a bad fantasy player at all.
Let me put my hand up Adam's ass and be a puppet for a minute.
William Carlson.
Should have said William Carlson.
I love that one.
Oh my God.
What were we talking about?
Sasha Barkoff.
Oh.
He didn't poorly perform.
I think that was not.
Oh, is that way?
Sorry.
Yes.
I agree with you.
Yes.
Injury.
So then Jack Hughes shouldn't count either.
He was good when he was out there.
So by.
your definition,
Luke Hughes is more right than Jack Hughes and Barker.
I guess.
Not my definition,
Adams.
By your definition.
I think isn't a comeback player in like the other leagues like,
oh,
a guy had an injury.
Yeah,
yeah,
it is.
Okay,
fine.
You know what,
Parkoff.
Bark off's a good answer.
That is the answer,
then, I think.
Austin.
All right.
Love it.
We will wrap it up.
Now remember,
Leafs back to back to start the season.
So I've got Montreal and the Islanders Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
Shut up.
Brand new CJ show is out.
And we got shows Wednesday and Friday this week, too.
Cannot wait.
The funniest comeback player of the year award ever was when Damar Hamlin died on the field
and then lost comeback player of the year the next year in the NFL.
That happened?
Yeah, he lost.
He came second in voting.
And Skip Bayliss is like, can we get back to playing?
Remember Skip Baylis?
Can they just get them off the field so we can play some football?
