like you you you and i woke up at 4 30 every morning for years yeah notably loved it i i hated it i like listen i love i love doing shows i do i love it i hated waking up early i'm when i was like um when steve used to do like olympic hits with me in 2010 when i was doing evenings evenings and overnights were my shit that was the most fun it's unfortunate that nobody's listening at that time but those are the best shifts in radio um and uh and honestly i would love to like i look at the guys on tv doing like hockey games like that is the perfect time to be on the air you've had a good day to warm up be ready to go got your prep that sort of thing when you're waking up at 4 a.m you're like okay so i did some prep last night what happened this morning oh and i gotta

pretend to be really happy about being awake right now my favorite shift is the afternoon yeah i think it's a little better than the the evening one because then you miss out on everything that happens at night i think that afternoon shift when you when you're on the air from like five to seven like that's a good time like the tim and sid show when i was working on that show like that was perfect adam's stupid knucklehead friends had to visit him in studio if they wanted to hang out with yeah yeah yeah that's true when you're doing overnight yeah well we had i remember we had a uh we had a new year's party uh at the virgin radio studios in 2011 uh and this is when it was owned by a different company you could never do it now that bell owns it but um astral

was like well yeah whatever do whatever you do what you want great quebec company solid love you astral uh miss you um and uh they um basically they're like hey so we're gonna send all the jocks out and they're gonna go to different people's new year's parties and take pictures and tweet them and stuff like that and and do cut-ins and and adam you're gonna do you're gonna be back at home base and you're going to be taking all the calls and uh you're 21 so bring all your friends in so i packed 30 people in the studio with alcohol and i remember when new year's actually hit because the shift was seven hours i started we started at seven we finished at 2 a.m and it's i turned on all the mics in the studio to get everybody singing old lang syne and

celebrating or whatever and one of my friends his name is kevin burnside yelled out oh why did you he said happy new year motherfuckers oh no went out across the air

we went to high school with this person and the moment you mentioned his name I'm like you had a live mic in front of him I know I know

we didn't get one I'm surprised it wasn't like a three two one I just did the opposite with my finger three two one

alright and now we're on the air dick boo penis dude he didn't We didn't get one CBSC complaint.

Not one. So we got one. I don't think a lot of people were working. No. Listening to the radio. No, they were not listening to the radio usually on a night like that. But anyway, it was a fun way to have your own club. Club Virgin Radio, as we called it.

Club Virgin. That's Club Virgin. Club Virgin. Went to a few of those clubs. I was that guy. Also, I mean, this is a bit of a hard turn. But I do want to mention that today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. also known as orange shirt day sorry tomorrow is we're wearing today uh and i say i say today too

because everly had to wear her orange shirt today as well because tomorrow is the day um it's uh it was first established in 2013 as part of an effort to promote awareness and education of the residential school system in canada and the impact that it has had on indigenous communities for over a century the impact of the residential school system has been recognized as a cultural genocide that continues to this day and obviously there are great organizations that are working to change that, including the, uh, uh, obviously the orange shirt society, which Jesse has up on screen. Uh, the, um, uh, the Downey Wenjack, um, uh, corporate, uh, sorry, uh, charity started by Gore Downey before his passing. Um, so there's plenty of organizations you can give to, you can

read up on, you can educate yourself. And, uh, we wanted to be a part of that as well. Yeah. The last residential school in Canada doesn't, didn't close until 1997. And we learned there were, they, what, what they taught us in school was like a sentence. oh yeah and we had these we had these schools anyway it was bad maybe shouldn't have done it anyway we were still in moving on school in 1997 yeah yeah yeah for sure i remember 1997 i do i do you got memories from i remember who won the cup in 97 who is it uh detroit who they beat in 97 philly that's right legion of doom the next year it was who come on come on oh washington that's right yeah anyway uh let's uh sweeps so we're gonna have we're gonna have a show today obviously

it'll be up and you're probably watching this maybe around noon or whatever and then we're gonna have a show tonight at the course and clubhouse in saint catherine's for our sold out show uh so you're gonna have another pod a bonus pod tomorrow uh which is a live pod unless you're gonna be there in which case you'll see it live we're very excited and then watch it back and maybe you'll see yourself yeah absolutely now um yesterday we had huge news break um i uh kevin weeks broke the story um andre vasilevsky had a microendectomy on a lump on a lumbar back herniation this morning i don't know where to begin with that uh he expected he's expected to miss the first two months of the regular season um pierre lebrun retweeted chris johnson

and said everything is on the table as far as whether the light sorry whether the lightning go for a goalie but cap management for day one is going to be important uh especially since vasileski will be back so obviously they can take a salary put it on ltir but they can't go out and get a goalie equivalent because frankly they won't be able to afford that person when he comes back like dan vladar was a name that got brought up he's too expensive he's too expensive um unless money goes back yeah um but i just i just don't i don't see that i don't see it does it does smell a little bit like martin jones's music but uh in the meantime uh there's other guys martin jones had 27 wins last year he did he did so he he would be adequate they don't need a world beater

like if you want one too bad you're not getting one you need an adequate replacement for two months. That's it. Eric Erlandson, who is the lightning insider, he's he kind of broke down after speaking with Julian Breeze while what happened, because this was the story at a lightning camp, which has been an eventful one with Stephen Stamkos. That was nobody heard about this Vasilevsky injury, really. I didn't even really hear like a whisper. So he first felt the issue in August, which is interesting. They used injections to try to treat it. He felt it again on the first day of camp. They tried other measures that were not working. So after consultation, uh, they determined that the surgery was the best course of action to alleviate the

situation. They feel confident, uh, that after the surgery, uh, there will be no long-term effects and they hope he'll be back in form in two months because of the cap situation, uh, with five more preseason games to go, they're going to let Jonas Johansson, uh, Tompkins and Allen felt, uh, adjust to the situation um if you know and essentially obviously they're going to be looking for some sort of low-cost veteran goaltender to jump in for the next 10 weeks with them no you you guys got uh passionate opinions about those three none none yeah jonas johansson i mean can play nhl games for you he's a career third goalie tompkins was canada's goalie i believe at the spengler cup oh okay um but like you know he's middle-aged uh and like it'd be strange for him

to make his nhl debut like as a regular sure um and then uh i can't remember the name of the other one but hugo allen felt i know him because uh he's a great prospect in nhl 23 there you go if you if you go a couple years deep in in franchise mode hugo allen felt isn't too bad of a goalie matures into like an 84 85 well there you go he's he's young he's he's very young and i 22 i believe now yeah sometimes like there's nothing in his recent track record that suggests he's ready for for this uh so maybe the lightning go internal um but like if like i mean what if johansson gets injured right like they they have to get someone and there's gonna be a bunch of goalies on waivers I don't think it's going to be a problem.

They just need a body, like, at this point. Even Spencer Martin. Yeah, it's worth a shot. Like, his pedigree coming in was so high, and then he completely crashed last year. But it's worth just, hey, we need somebody to play goal, have anybody there, and Spencer Martin's worth a shot. Yeah, Martin Jones is a good fit, I will admit.

But, like, there's other guys out there, guys. Let's get more creative than dude who plays for Toronto. Yeah, let's not. Or not. The league doesn't get more creative than that. No, they don't. That's true. Are the Penguins putting a goalie on waiver? yeah then take him two o'clock today i think it's gonna be is it a leafs thing or is it a kyle

dubas thing well we know it was a dubas thing tune in at two to find out yeah yeah oh ty smith isn't making it um i think it's gonna be uh it'll be fascinating and listen for the leafs you know this has got to change everybody's projections on how the atlantic is going to shake out because the the race was supposed to be between toronto and tampa and it doesn't mean that it won't be but if you're the Toronto Maple Leafs this is a golden opportunity to jump out to a really good start in October and never look back and win the division and not have to play um Tampa ideally in the first round that's gonna be so you know you don't want it they might have to though because Tampa will be the wild card well maybe maybe but I think they'll catch up I feel like you know if

you end up with like a Florida and a Tampa and a 2-3 hilarious first round by the way but you want to avoid those two teams you do i mean there's there's listen it's the regular season the leaves do well there there's no reason that they shouldn't be at least the betting favorites to win the atlantic right now tampa missing vasilevsky for two months golden opportunity golden florida it remains to be seen if bobrovsky can bring that postseason to the regular season yeah and like like that yeah there's no reason to expect that'll happen right boston you expect to take a step back how much we don't really know i'm pretty significant i think the sabers are really really good they'll take a big step a lot of a lot of talk about the senators as well

they'll take a step up yeah um and not as convinced sorry montreal and detroit i think montreal i think the montreal will be better if they can just stay healthy period they don't have to get uh but but to try to have not sure yeah still a bit of an issue in montreal but like the leafs are kind of the only team that's coming back full strength they got a little better over the offseason we assume and is kind of standing at you know and yeah it depends on who he asks and the other teams are kind of the young and up-and-coming teams and then the other tampa and boston are the older teams that are on the decline so at least they're kind of the only ones in that area so yeah they have a good shot of winning this division speaking of uh no

of the Ottawa Senators. I said GM. I mean, I mean, I mean. Folks, we know the direction this is headed in. Wait, so you think Dorian is not going to be there? Yeah, but he's above GM.

But Steve Stahels, a longtime NHLer. They won an OHL championship. i want to say was arbor jack eye on that team doesn't matter um but uh it was it was going in

this direction hold on what's the connection with ann lauer though oh okay sorry going in this direction for a while uh because steve steos was uh basically heading up things with the bulldogs and also the sends added someone who worked with steos and ann lauer at the bulldogs um sean tierney oh yeah i know sean charting hockey exactly um so i mean the writing has been on the wall um very interesting um time i assume very interesting summer for pierre dorian because when i originally heard general manager and i will admit that is what i heard and that is what i said i heard would happen i thought huh wait a sec when did they let go of dorian i didn't think of that until after i tweeted it and then i was like oh they haven't oh this is

going to be awkward what's happening right now with steos as the president um is actually probably better and maybe a good sign for dorian um i don't think what dubas is doing in pittsburgh is going to be the norm where someone is the president and gm uh steos gets to be the i don't know translator if you will if you will the middleman between michael and lauer and dorian um steos speaks and lauer's language he also speaks the language of a general manager uh and a pro hockey guy he's been in pro hockey for at least two decades maybe three um i don't think he's been a general manager at the nhl level but he's been in agm uh this is a really good fit really good fit um you know as a leaf fan i would love to come up with a reason why this is bad for

i can't and here's former leaf i believe here's your tweet from june 13th 2023 at 9 a.m on the dot you said not a huge surprise but i'm hearing steve stayos to the sins for a role likely as gm and lauer once hired stayos away from the leafs to join uh the hamilton bulldogs cool go cool leafs lose another one yeah well i mean i think uh i i think michael and lauer as any owner would do is going to put somebody in there that he trusts i gotta retweet um i'm curious about do it do it i gotta take your victory lap i i just you know my question here is is the future of pierre dorian and i think pierre dorian deserves to be the gm i think given what he had to put up with not just in the the late eugene years which were chaotic and fans were rebelling and the team

wasn't good after 2017 2018 somewhere in there um and trading eric carlson and you know that whole team being disassembled beyond all that he had to also put up with pierre mcguire randomly for a year as an advisor there and listen nothing against pierre's broadcasting or whatever but he hadn't been a part of a nhl front office or coaching staff since the early 90s and so you know all of a sudden here comes pierre mcguire telling pierre dorian what to do and and he was like his his his boss yeah it's crazy even though he was under him pierre dorian's interpersonal skills have got to be a plus like his ability to manage people yes and if you look at the team that the Sens have now they're one of the best young cores in the national hockey league yes they're

going to be very good for a long time once all of these players mature into the players that we think they're going to be and that's all Dorian yeah Dorian's been there the whole time and he's brought in all this young talent he deserves to see this through and see how they develop uh and i think it yeah it struck me as wrong um that's why it's terrible that steve assumed he would get fired yes steve wanted to wait which steve you it's important oh he wanted him fired yes i did not for his he called for his i did not let the campaign i did not hashtag and you bought billboards didn't you didn't you can you imagine man i've always wondered that how much those things cost like those probably not a lot yeah those fans crowdfunding that though i was

like man that like that's not nothing couple thousand bucks is that what it is probably i looked into uh getting a rink board in oshawa for sdpn and it was like three grand and i'm like for the whole season uh i don't remember if it was for for the whole season it's 41 should i have done it 41 i mean three grand is spicy lfr should i just get my face your face and iggy and It's just riddled with puck marks by like half an hour through the first day. They're shooting at your nose. Everyone missing the net on purpose. That would be sick.

That would be really cool. I'm going to break the nose again. He almost did yesterday. I would be sick if you bought a billboard and just had people fire pucks at it throughout the year. I like that. I actually really like that. Steve's face. Frivolous business expense.

metal band in the world drummer for atomic tomb um they dropped off their old coffee maker in i think june now now this coffee maker we bought two brand new coffee machines and one of them broke immediately yeah so so steve had them drop it by now this coffee machine had was it's a solid purchase there's nothing wrong with this coffee machine at the point of purchase i believe it was made in 1973 it's old and uh i want you to know that steve started brewing it before jesse or myself or maddie got here and maddie was already by the time we got upstairs 20 minutes later it had gotten to the four cups amount and steve was trying to brew eight cups and it was leaking all over the counter and i didn't put the pot in so steve jesse how many how much how many minutes

did we lose waiting for steve to brew coffee uh we started about half an hour after we should i think it's time to put the coffee machine out to pastor i think we need to rehome the coffee it's time to get new friends i'm not sure if you saw it last night conor bedard's first nhl preseason game now i get it it's preseason but he did set up both goals including an incredible ot winner between him and andreas and athena cu and it kind of felt like that's what we should have seen between athena cu and conor mcdavid had that trade to edmonton not been cut short by covid um but uh i i just i want to get your thoughts on what you guys saw from conor bedard the confidence the playmaking he makes them actually okay yeah i am i am a little worried

for the kid because like the talent is obviously ridiculous like his poise his hands um he has a respect already at 18 years old like defenders fear him they're like this kid is about to do some ridiculous bullshit and then he does it and there's nothing they can really do about it i worry about the kid because there is a tension there um and it's obviously not affecting his game too badly he had you know two assists on two goals you can't really do much better than that um but after the game oh still always so hard on himself okay uh and you know i don't i don't know if that's an act or what um but i i think it's maybe lonely being the uh the savior of a franchise savior of a franchise and not a whole hell of a lot around you right um but that's why you overpay

a nick felino that's why you overpay a cory parry right you you got to get this kid in his happy i think i think they got taylor hall in a pretty good trade for taylor hall yeah i believe they traded for him um i mean they're still they got guys they probably got more guys than they get credit for but it's still a fairly hopeless roster um they just gotta insulate this kid and if he has a good season that'll be enough um now one of the things that happened after the game too you talk about tension is um somebody walked over the blackhawks logo in the locker room and conor did not like it have a listen to this so you can see you can see his reaction to that who's that yelling i don't i think it's the pr

this morning that uh the leafs just put a blanket down so you don't step on the logo the dallas stars put it on the ceiling it looks incredible yeah it's way better than that can we see that but they've they've updated the uh the locker room and they made it to the final four i just feel like why the only reason i just feel like okay first off we've talked about this but the walking on the loco thing in the dressing room is super odd because um it's on the floor yes so we have a piece of the floor what's the floor there for guys walking on right also wheeling your little cart thing so you you've taken a room full of 30 sweaty dudes you know four or five members of the coaching staff and maybe 30 members of the media it's bedard's first

game in chicago their shit everywhere yeah hockey mad market though hockey mad so there's going to be a ton of reporters there and you're like sorry guys this eight foot by eight foot or six foot by six foot you can't walk there it's why because we made it up going yeah well and it's like you don't have a problem skating over the logo at center ice no problem they should have to skate around it actually it should be home ice disadvantage because the road team what do they care the home team can't skate across center which means they automatically lose every opening face up wow amazing yeah i like it i'm into it why not like it listen if we're gonna get serious about this let's get serious about this it is it's it's such a it's a silly thing that human

not like it's not a bad idea like he shouldn't be playing every every game he played too many last year and i think it caught up with him he was not good uh in the playoffs but um if you're gonna have Brody on the right side I don't understand how you put Timmons in the lineup well John Klingberg tightened up there was some sort of tightening and they took him out of the game against Buffalo which is the Kraft Hockeyville game and that's where Timmons stepped up and I wonder he was incredible yeah you know the thing is the problem with the Leafs right now is they're so up against the cap that they may have to have a roster of like 20 guys so those three extra slots you can't carry your seventh and eighth defenseman even though you want to it's such a shame if they

end up losing 10 minutes like i would fight every single way to not make that happen because he had such a good season last year in the 25 games he got into and if we remember like he they got him in the trade for curtis douglas from from arizona and before that he'd played four games in two years because of all the injuries he had and it was like kyle dubas identified a project a second round pick who has been injured for so long and he hasn't really played games and hey maybe we can rehabilitate his career and it was a great scouting job by him and he stepped into a role and he played it well and it would be a shame if they lost him at this point when colorado got darcy kemper from arizona he was a key part of the return he was a big second round pick that went

in the other way a great prospect yeah like if he ends up having a good nhl career like it's not weird it's not a shock it's not a shock at all it's uh it's actually a really good comeback story yeah so it's it'd be i think it'd be bad on the organization for the leafs if they started this comeback and that they couldn't finish it you know if i'm brad i'm trying to keep them in the in the organization and not lose them on waivers guys on two-year deals that are worth more than a million per season typically don't get claimed off waivers but you never know he um you can expect to that that there's so many teams up against it um wouldn't it be hilarious if simone benoit gets claimed by the ducks if they have to put one uh but um but uh not a chance you can

expect that that a lot of people who shouldn't get through in a normal you're going to get through because of just the the amount of teams up against the cap is outrageous right now it's crazy penguins are banking on it oh i bet they are i i just feel like if you're the leafs you can you can i think you can hope and pray that it gets through that's a guy you might just need to make space for like i think yeah it's it's difficult to see a way that it makes sense to lose him like a simon benoit may be the guy that you can put on waivers because he's had back spasms he had terrible numbers in in anaheim um not necessarily his fault completely but there's a lot more justification for lagasin than benoit yeah i will say that right like um again i brad

adam agreed uh uh i don't and it's not to denigrate any of the players or whatever but i think clearly little lilligran's a great defenseman or becoming a really good defenseman for them he listen he had a terrible end of last year played himself out of the lineup i get it he's gotta figure it out but he has the skills and you know it's it's tantalizing i'm shocked that you had such a shocked reaction to lilligran being in that group because the way he ended last season was a seventh defenseman who makes 1.4 million dollars connor timmons is a could be a seventh defenseman who makes 1.1 million dollars they are in the very same range as each other so i sort of talk about this hate you for that comment by the way yeah but they're not wrong and they're

also one year apart in age i i sort of that's wild i sort of talked about this uh in the prospect pyramid like guys gotta take jobs like you can't just be like fine and you like get into the no take a job take a job from somebody wouldn't it be wild if the way it works out opening night is timmons is in there and lilligren isn't it's not even it sounds ridiculous but when you think about how last year ended and how this one is beginning it's not that wouldn't be a shock i don't think the gap between the two is as big as you think no they're in the exact same age range they were finished last season in very similar spots in the lineup their salaries are 300 grand apart like no connor timmons could take lilligren spot any day same age range who's older connor

timmons by one year oh i thought it was 25 right timmons is 25 lilligren's 24 here here's what i'd say i think the upside for timothy lilligren i'm looking at it the upside wrong is higher Much, much higher. What is this cap? Like, you just bring it up any website. What's cap-friendly? I don't get it. No.

Timmons also just turned 25. His birthday was September 18th. Happy birthday, Connor. One N. But here's the thing, guys. Listen, like, I think people are used to Timothy Lilligren. He was the 17th overall pick. People are rooting for him.

They're comfy. They're comfy. And he does have high end. I think he's got more high end potential than, than Timmons does. But the reality of the situation is 25 playing. Yeah. I think he's,

but you know, I also, at some point you have to decide that's not realistic. The comparisons are a first round pick versus a second round pick a year apart. Like this.

is play regular good minutes, but seize your spot in the top four.
