Starting point is 00:00:00 check out the worldwide e-sim service sailing whoa what is what is that you might ask it's a mouthful if you're traveling it's the the best uh it's actually the coolest thing ever um it's basically avoiding all your roaming fees from your local provider which sucks we don't like that don't want those we don't want those at all and your local provider has a vested interest in charging you through the nose i don't know why that's even a thing uh why people say through the nose but it's through the nose um it's out the nose also it is all it's out out the everything and uh saly kind of prevents that from happening where you buy an e-sim now you might be familiar with uh flying into an airport and getting to those sketchy sim counters and
Starting point is 00:00:41 they're like here's a card you can put this in your iphone and nothing bad will happen uh e-sims are great because you don't have to put anything in your phone and uh unprotected and you've got nord security backing this fully encrypted wherever you go uh all around the world you can get a saly plan jesse used it last summer maddie uses it it's the best and the promo code is sdp so you it's actually dangle oh it's actually not sdp it's dangle d-a-n-g-l-e now you won't forget it now exactly uh 15 off right now on saly data plans use your code dangle at checkout d-a-n-g-l-e download the saly app s-a-i-l-y or go to saly.com slash dangle oh what's the code dangle yeah there you go it's great sometimes life throws your curveballs and you
Starting point is 00:01:26 don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and their way around on that is like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff because you gotta have That scraper thing and the washer thing. The chemicals. You've got to have the right chemicals.

Starting point is 00:02:48 in toronto for the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research together we can carry the D-P-P, the Steve Dangle Podcast, with your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wild, and Jesse Blake. Let's go! What is it, Adam? Vegas beats the Avs in four. Mm-hmm. In four.
Starting point is 00:03:29 You know, there it is, everyone, the Toronto media speech. No, no, no, no, no. Looks good on them, am I right? I want to say, before we get to that, did a single person in the world who wasn't hedging bet vegas in four now there's people that hedge and they'll bet every outcome yeah and they'll just they'll just be like one of them will land and that's hedging did anybody truthfully go in and say vegas in four and i wonder what kind of odds that you would have gotten for that okay can i tell you who might have had vegas in four avalanche fans why are they so and i'm serious
Starting point is 00:04:05 sad you know what guys they won the president's trophy and then they got swept in the ecf or wcf yeah muscle memory yeah um uh i think like okay i picked i think i picked abs in six heading into the series that was perfectly reasonable they mopped the floor with minnesota who was a really strong team and they beat dallas fairly convincingly and they're a strong team and They're an incredibly strong team. Colorado in six was a perfectly reasonable expectation coming into this series. And everyone's going to be like, oh, excuse. It's not an excuse.
Starting point is 00:04:44 It's the NHL. Like, guys get hurt. When you saw Cale McCarr is going to miss game one, did that not make you go, oh, I'm wrong? Like, instantly. Instantly, I bailed on my pick. Like, not even bailing on Colorado winning entirely, but definitely them winning in six. Well, you can also make the, well, I mean, I guess you should have bailed on Colorado winning entirely because here's the thing about a guy like Hale McCarr, irreplaceable. And you can put as much depth in your lineup as you want, irreplaceable. I would argue that, and we can talk about Colorado later. I want to start with Vegas, but Colorado's defensive depth is just not there beyond him. but when you look at oh what a player like that brings teams simply cannot recover from a player
Starting point is 00:05:29 like that not being in the lineup you can't you cannot no it's like oh imagine wayne gretzky had pulled a groin going into the 87 finals right and can't play this uh you know one of one of the ones that uh the blues look back on all the time like taylor uh taylor hall brett hull has talked about that's very different yeah on podcasts is uh blues are playing the leafs nick kiprios injures grant fuhrer blues go on to win uh anyway and then they take on the red wings oh that goes all the way to game seven double overtime and eisman just rips that alien clapper that beats i don't even remember the name of the goalie something casey oh john casey was it john casey it was casey for sure i just i don't remember his first name and that blues team should have won cups yeah and
Starting point is 00:06:22 they talk about it like they should have won cups because they should have won cup yeah yep they were stacked they were absolutely stacked but they lost their starting now give credit to hard thing to overcome uh kiprios had the right idea that is how you win playoffs oh he was ahead of the curve yeah yeah good for you kipper you need to go in a time machine and become a panther we need you back no no no be a leaf come be a leaf again we need you back be anyone playing the abs and anybody who's ever stood next to nick kiprios knows he's still in game day shape uh yes as someone who has had their collar held in kipper's fist buddy he on breakfast television jerseied me do you guys remember that oh i remember the fake the fake ice we were skating
Starting point is 00:06:59 in the fake ice in the studio and he grabbed me and freaking jerseied me on live tv most of this podcast has been manhandled by nick kiprios jesse have you physically yeah i'm the only one who has not yet there's always time there is still time now i i i want to start with mitch marner because i think we need to start with mitch marner not leave him alone toronto media and i think what needs to be done here is just to give the man his flowers sure he's been phenomenal yes and if they win in my mind that he's winning the con smith and uh and that is uh awesome and i'm not even gonna there's no butts to this nope i was hard on mitch here and rightly so um i am but but just like with anybody for whatever reason with anybody um if they do well good for them and this obviously
Starting point is 00:07:50 was a move he felt he needed to make the move has worked and he looks amazing and the team around him looks dialed into what he's doing and i don't think there's anything else to be said other than wow i you know we always thought it was there and it's there i i would like jesse to play the the clip okay yeah let's hear from the man who's Mitch Marner uh yeah we love size shout out big z in the back mike zeisberger who's uh their cover in the western conference final yeah uh here's jesse granger who recorded this video so we can use it what up jesse mitch marner uh post game some emotion on the ice just what was that like yes um special moment uh like i said to sean i mean there's been some dark times in hockey for myself honestly
Starting point is 00:08:37 um thankful for my family my brother my mom and dad my wife um all my friends around me so um yeah you know that was a you know moment just express you know some joy and some um you know some fun there and i'll enjoy it for the night and then you know be ready to go to work and he said that to sean mckenzie immediately following the game too same thing and you know what i I'm not screaming again. Okay. Yeah. It's probably bad for your voice.
Starting point is 00:08:59 You also got to work tonight. Yeah. You probably got to scream tonight. I don't want you got you. Listen, you've got Habs clips to create for angry Leaf fans tonight. So don't you forget it now. It's okay. I think I think the thing is, is that if you're a Leaf fan and I'm just going to let's talk
Starting point is 00:09:14 straight to Leaf fans for a second here. I do need to wait. What do you think about his comment about dark times? Well, I think I think this plays perfectly into what I'm about to say. Yeah. I'm curious what you what because I know what I'm going to say. uh uh yeah there were dark times uh-huh and i'm gonna beg i'm not sure there were uh i'm gonna beg leaf fans to stop taking the bait yeah yeah stop taking the bait yeah like this man does this
Starting point is 00:09:42 man wanted to move on you want to move on we have the first overall pick stop taking the bait the nhl has littered their feed with mitch marner toronto stuff oh my god espn did the article yesterday which you didn't want to comment on uh greg reached out to you greg wischinski reached out to you yep people are like uh drop it and i'm like okay hey do you want to be part of this article uh marner article article article do you want to be part of this martyr article no stop talking about martyr just steve on the biggest sports platform in the world and i said thumbs up yeah and so uh and and sports net's done it nhl's done it and i don't blame them right they're going to get engagement that's the that's the job but i look at i look at this and i
Starting point is 00:10:26 look at mitch and i go yeah you know what i what i respect about this is that it was dark and to me what it has shown is sometimes a you need to change the scenery yes sometimes b uh resilience man yeah and i you can't i i know you're you're feeling different about this but i i can't help but respect how he's handled these playoffs for this team i know it's a different team i know it's a better team clearly better team than the leafs ever were yes there's no argument about he's also performed and done it yep and i think he deserves all the flowers for that i can do without him bringing up dark times i do i don't respect that i think that's a dig i think you oh it's 100 a day yeah and so i like going through this post-game interview and bring it up ah you
Starting point is 00:11:10 know there's that Toronto time sucked look at me now shut up like I don't need that we did we did give the guy literally everything the organization the fans everything how about you give back some 11 million dollars a year yeah you know seven seasons no I don't think that I've done it like listen this moment has been obvious to me since 40 minutes into game one yeah right when I tweeted listen he's gonna win the cup he's gonna win the consmith you have a few weeks to prepare for it right yeah i tweeted that and it's doing numbers it's a it's a rare evergreen tweet or at least two months green tweet uh or whatever i've known and i'm like what are you gonna say what are you gonna say and i put a lot of thought into what i was gonna say and i was like nothing you haven't
Starting point is 00:11:58 already said you want me to be done with this i really and truly am i said what i said and i sleep like a baby at night because i thought really hard about what i said and that's the beginning middle and end of it you're not gonna retcon nine years into being something that it wasn't it's beneath you it's beneath me it's beneath all of us to keep doing this and i'm not interested here's what i'd say it's awesome mitch marner is doing this in 2026 it would have been way better if he did it in 2024 oh you mean with the leafs he couldn't have done it with the leafs they're a piece of shit and vegas is a better organization no you should have gone there in 2024 when his no move kicked in in the summer of 2023
Starting point is 00:13:03 and this is me going back a little bit okay i gotta revisit something a little bit when dubas is fired and true living comes in and they don't bother to trade marner before his trade protection comes in and then we all go well even though he's got a no move that he fought for in contract negotiations they can trade him anyway marner goes well no you can't and i remember asking around that time i don't remember if it was may june july whatever but it was around that time in 2023 i looked down the barrel of the camera and i was like why do you want this like people are making fun of how he talks about the dark times in his hockey career um like oh my god this he's acting like this was this horrible affliction that was that
Starting point is 00:13:57 that happened to him and i'm like yes oh he couldn't handle the pressure in toronto the pressure in toronto was too much and i'm like yes and he just wouldn't move on he willingly stuck around for all of that willingly stuck around while swiping right on tinder on other teams when he had the option because it was his choice to stay or leave because of what you just outlined and he chose to stay each and every time yes they tried to trade him for like two years yeah they tried to trade him for two years we thought what we thought when when that when that no trade kicked in what we actually thought was gonna happen was willie would get traded yes and then they made the stupid decision
Starting point is 00:14:49 to oh well he's performing too well we got to keep him they like nothing ever changes they Brian McCabe William Nylander and and so the person you're mad at is not Mitch and you're not mad it's a little bit like I think I think I think it's Shani it's Shani
Starting point is 00:15:09 person I will listen we're eating a shit sandwich this morning and we got us take our medicine as as a fan base I I don't want to I'm ready to move on I've been ready to move on for weeks I've been complimenting the
Starting point is 00:15:19 guy on streams do you think maybe other fan bases will be harsh with the world the world will not let us move on brave new world oh man i don't know how i'm gonna handle this new reality shanny's parting gift is this shit sandwich in these playoffs and i think there's a reason he ain't working and i think yes i think there's a reason there's that reason but i also think like you know we people react to
Starting point is 00:15:40 what they see on the ice but the it's the frozen management style of the last three years of of the leafs um you know tree came in was ready to make some moves and then frozen his last season the season before shanee froze froze for five years and they wasted their time on things they couldn't do you can't trade this player with a full no move stop it stop trying well you can sometimes if they'll they'll waive it but he won't yes but he told you no yeah and he told you no more than once yep you can't make trades with the calgary flames brad why are you the last person to know this yeah they won't make a trade with you brad yeah they don't like you anymore man so i'm sitting here again clean conscience trying to think of something
Starting point is 00:16:29 i should have said or done differently oh marner was never surrounded with the i'm gonna lose my mind actually you you were saying that in 2021 after the canadian series yes because we can't do this with this amount of money tied up in these four players you know what everyone did for four years they said you were too negative they said no they didn't yes they did well yes they fucking did yes they did yeah and then i was too negative in 2022 it was too negative in 2023 i was too negative in 2024 i was too negative in 2025 and now he wins in 2026 in a different situation which i asked him to move on to for several years and now i'm stupid i don't think you're i think you're fighting a battle you're never gonna win man no i know that
Starting point is 00:17:16 listen everyone's taking their shots at the leafs even though they were the ones telling us for years and years you guys are a bunch of chokers and now they're going see told you marner's not a choker yeah all right like it's the internet get your yucks in uh i'm right you're wrong you're coping with it through jokes and that's fine as for the leafs fans who are like i always knew uh well way to keep it a secret i like i i don't i don't know what uh maybe you could have suggested something that might have worked while he was here um uh they were too top heavy a lot like well not really the avalanche i think that was just horrible luck to be honest yeah injury but uh the leafs were never built in a sane way if marner looked like he was crumbling under pressure it's because
Starting point is 00:18:10 he was because too much was expected of him and uh you know what i'm fully on board with uh the scrappy underdog that has over 200 million in the bank and a bunch of other stuff about him that i've already said and covered you want me to be done with it i very much am i would like you to also be done with it but every day i'm flooded with people not being done with it and now we're gonna clip this yeah it's gonna oh and we're gonna put it online and it's gonna be get over it yes and i'm just like good lord you go to work every day and people are your co-workers yeah yeah i just i i i just i i get caught up in fascination with what the 24 hours a day living being you is i i said what i said i put some thought into it i think it was pretty clever
Starting point is 00:19:09 that's it yeah absolutely i am very much done with it yeah me too marner is like not even in the top five things i dislike most about the vegas golden knights that's fair that's fair he's not even in most people's top five of things i'm ready to move on mckenna man i'm just ready like i as a as as a fan of the leafs i'm just ready to start talking about that okay did you notice that it was mckenna mckenna mckenna mckenna mckenna mckenna mckenna leafs get the first overall pick stenber looks great well they did that with line a too yeah that's just how the draft cycle goes i think yeah it's just we always ramp up to the draft and then you get you start hearing more about the other people it's how the draft cycle goes it's also
Starting point is 00:19:53 just people fucking with leaf fans and they're they're having fun and that's fine i think i think if it's the Canucks, it's the same thing. And again, this is what my message to Leaf fans is just stop taking the bait. Stop commenting on the posts. Just row your own boat, man. Like what do you head in your own boat? Keep your head in your own. That's that's the thing. Like I just feel like, oh
Starting point is 00:20:11 my God, the reason that the NHL is putting out like the reason John Bucci Gross is putting out a picture of Mitch Marner doing this in a Leafs jersey is because he wants your attention. And I think you just got to let it go. Let it go. Oh, we're all grown men. We're all grown men. You know, we've
Starting point is 00:20:27 talked all spring about how important it is to your journey it's a horse it's actually the really strong horse 6,400 pounds of towing capacity that i-force engine delivers incredible performance so in the in the horse realm because you know we're talking about horsepower okay who's your horse from the vegas golden knights colorado series and i'm gonna i'm gonna go out on a limb here and say we're all picking vegas players yeah probably no no one from the team that was swept uh this guy is on the verge of he's going to his third straight stanley cup final but not third straight sorry he's going to his third stanley cup final and i think he's going to win his third stanley cup ivan barbashev he's a he's a he's a horse he's an absolute horse i met
Starting point is 00:21:12 this kid at the draft when he was picked i said who's picking yeah he said st louis and they sure enough did won a cup there goes to vegas wins a cup and he's still here with vegas everyone's fascinated with the new toy because in vegas there's always a new toy this guy's been there for a while and he deserves the credit love that um jesse i'm gonna i'm gonna make you go last okay okay all right here's mine brayden mcnabb oh everybody talks about shea theodore and they should like they should he's the best defenseman on the team brayden mcnabb does all the horse shit he does all the shot blocking uh bodying guys to the side uh jumping in front of pucks and he's a he's a big guy and day one and he's a day winner yeah that's true he's always been a
Starting point is 00:21:58 vegas golden knight and he's still extraordinarily effective 10 years later uh you know what vegas was so good as pushing guys to the side and i think he's the guy that leads the charge in the defensive area for that so i'm gonna say brain mcnab horse jesse i think the player on the golden knights who's having the most underrated playoff performance right now is i think their leader on the ice even though he doesn't wear the c he leads in performance and that's jack eichel yeah he's currently second in playoff points behind mitch marner and he's only scored two goals it's because he's setting up two now yeah he scored two goals playoffs and he's second in points in the playoffs that's he's setting up everything
Starting point is 00:22:38 and it all starts with him in the defensive zone he's he's what he's towing things around He's towing it. Towing it. That's right. He's not horsing around. He's towing it. No, exactly. We'll shoehorn that in.
Starting point is 00:22:50 Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, it's a true 200-foot player. His defensive abilities are so underrated, and I think he deserves some love. I love that. Visit shoptoyota.ca or your local Ontario Toyota dealer to check out the Toyota Tacoma. Now, listen, May ends this weekend,
Starting point is 00:23:06 and so will Red Tag Day. So you've got a few more days. Jump in this weekend. It's going to be a beautiful weekend. Go have a look at a Tacoma. The other thing that I do want to talk about, and this this one I will sound salty about, because if you've listened to this show long enough, you know that I have always had reservations about John Tortorella. And, you know, one of the things that I've always found extraordinarily grating about him is the lengths people will go to to tell you, well, actually, he's a great guy and he's changed every job. he gets into after tampa it's well john's calmed down a little bit john's john's calmed down he's
Starting point is 00:23:49 going to be better with the media he's going to be better with the fans he's going to be this and this and this and this and look at this he's got dogs and he likes them i'm like man i don't know a single person who doesn't like dogs but okay john's the kind of person to tell you about all his exes and how crazy they are so so you know you know he comes in no it's not the common denominator they're all crazy and he comes in and he does the whole well like bruce cassidy's a coach and i'm not going to change anything bruce did immediately changes everything bruce did and by the way it worked yeah it's worked it's been great um uh especially the penalty kills unbelievable and um and deserves a deserves credit for that but where i get annoyed is
Starting point is 00:24:27 obviously there's the media thing which is he is happy to accept every media job thrown at him yeah but then immediately when he works in the nhl he's like i'm not sitting at your fucking dinner table you losers right and uh and then you know gets his ass fined and is you know uh you know huffing and puffing on the microphone during the press conference where kelly mccrimmon apologizes which is a sorry that you feel that way apology by the way and and then then he immediately as soon as he stuffs jared bednar into a locker that's what happened wow and i know bednar didn't have all the chips in his favor but that's sort of what you have to do in the playoffs as you find a way to win despite it uh and then he's then he basically says to the media and we've
Starting point is 00:25:10 got the clip um i don't even know if it needs it but he stands up and he goes get off bedsy's ass could have said it into the mic john well and so say it while walking away and i know the media kind of laughed at it and that sort of thing chicken it felt to me like a bit of an awkward laugh i wasn't in the room so i don't know but to me torts is um torts is a grown man who uh you know is very good at getting a room on side uh for a couple of years and what if he ends up extending in vegas and by the way there's no guarantees that he does he could just win and be off um uh that'd be crazy like it's like that's actually out there right like that's not that's not out of the realm it's what he should do but it i don't know if it brings enough attention
Starting point is 00:25:58 on him so i think he sticks this is a guy who got fired from the flyers for saying i don't i can't do this anymore and and like man i i don't forget i it's my job to remember those moments and i have a terrible memory i don't forget that stuff uh i don't forget i don't forget that kind of shit where every you know remember when uh columbus the players had to take him aside and say john you need to calm down and it was very early in his tenure i think it was brandon dubinsky was it dubinsky i think so like this is this is what i'm saying like i at a certain point i'm like buddy just fucking coach and enjoy it you're on an incredible run and yet just beat the president's trophy team he's about to become what is it the fourth coach to ever win a cup
Starting point is 00:26:43 with two different teams i think he's the second isn't it uh well i guess since the 40s it's like since tickety to like bowman's in the modern era which is post-world war there there you go yeah bowman in the post uh yeah world war ii era um post moon landing era post beatles era whatever you want to call it um that's crazy that you just gave him a stanley cup jesse why are we wasting time i don't know man carolina looks awfully good yeah yeah they do they do no no here let me let me go to what adam said yeah they do so anyway um when vegas wins the cup in like um 12 days yeah it depends on how soon carolina closes this out i'm just wondering which stream on espn plus the stanley cup will be available on i don't know because that is not uh ratings uh slam dunk for
Starting point is 00:27:38 them and they've got the nba finals happening at the exact same time so who's gonna run the nhl games they should sell them to tnt i don't know but i'm sure they're gonna do it poorly i i think my thing with john is like i just and and i get it too like we were a little bit on um paul maurice last postseason and that's not paul maurice the coach it's paul maurice the fart sniffer um oh there's a lot of sucking his own wind and i think with torts i'm like i know where this ends you always come in in your introductory press conference and you're like i'm nice guy hey you know what like compliments to the previous coach hey compliments to the guy i just who whose balls I just handed to.
Starting point is 00:28:15 I just literally, I embarrassed this guy, stole his lunch. And get off his ass though. Like, buddy, how about this? Focus on your own fucking team. Jared Bednar is a big boy, makes millions of dollars,
Starting point is 00:28:28 has had plenty of cracks at the cup. This might be it for him in Colorado. You know what's going to happen? He'll get immediately hired. Yeah. Here's where I'm struggling, Adam. Like, I know this is supposed to be where the evil empire
Starting point is 00:28:41 and all we're looking for is clicks. I'm having difficulty yes-ending the John Tortorella conversation because I find him to be very boring. Do you? Yeah, he's boring. Is he in the Wes McCauley school of I'm just not entertained by this anymore? Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:28:56 Reporter. Question, question, question. Tortorella. Gruff. Oh, question, question, question. Gruff. And then it gets uploaded and people go, well, that's torts.
Starting point is 00:29:10 Followed by the next day of our lives. we're all going to die eventually and i'm not going to fill the rest of my life with john totorella uh playing the hits yeah it's not 2008 anymore i find this to be so boring just go and win your cup like no one's he's not a bad coach no one's saying he's a bad coach but stop with the with the whatever narcissistic hero arc this is just go coach you're boring The one thing, Jesse, I always find funny about the NHL is the coaches seem to have the personalities like the play. We always talk about players not being the most electric in front of microphones sometimes. Yeah. Although they'll surprise you if it's in the right setting.
Starting point is 00:29:52 Coaches, especially this late in the game, seem to write Maurice. Paul Maurice was like top line news last year at this time. Right. I think that's such a good point because it's why we see the coach bump work so well in the NHL. It's because the players don't really drive the personality of these teams at all. It's OK. Everything is kind of stale. Let's bring in a new head coach and he's going to inject something in here. And it usually works like with the Panthers, you know, coming off that President's Trophy
Starting point is 00:30:21 season and then you bring in Paul Maurice, he's going to bring Paul Maurice energy to things that's going to infect the locker room. And the John Tortorella bump is real because of whatever he's doing with the guys and getting them all ready to play. it's it's a serious thing with these hockey players it takes a village right like bruce cassidy's a good coach and we know that because vegas is telling us that by not letting him go to a divisional rival but you have a team that's been taught everything bruce cassidy can teach them um i know i know kipper had a segment where he talked about um the room not necessarily
Starting point is 00:30:59 appreciating everything cassidy had to say in the end because all coaches were at the welcome but then this new guy comes in and and he's got there's no time for him to do the same exhausting john tortorella stuff that gets him fired at every job he ever gets and not till training camp you can not till training camp and we said the day he was hired this is going to go one of two directions they're going to lose every game down the stretch and miss the playoffs or they might win the cup i think he only has four losses or something yeah it's crazy uh two to utah two was it two and there was a overtime loss i think in the regular stuff because i know it was seven oh and something right seven oh and one yeah two two right or four uh actual losses yes he's going
Starting point is 00:31:44 to end this season with maybe the highest winning percentage because again i'm going off the assumption they're winning the stanley cup i'm not wasting my time uh they're i'll stream the games but like snore they're winning uh-huh um uh he's gonna win with like the highest win percentage of any coach in any shell history but asterix they're like single season though on like 20 games played whatever yeah and he will have won like 18 of them yeah the the coach thing is why i'm an advocate for letting go of jared bednar at this point yeah hey why don't you get off his ass you wear you wear it you're welcome as i think it's just as an nhl coach we've seen the game we've been around the game enough to know that it's just a thing that happens with
Starting point is 00:32:28 these players yeah they don't like a coach for too long and bednar's been there and now this team's kind of it's kind of stale now they fail it looks stale they have so much more talent and we saw it for months and they reached this point and it's just not there anymore and they give up that game four was ugly like i didn't like watching it because it was uh that you could tell colorado was just out of it well they were talking like they were out of it before the game yeah and how could you not be down three nothing and you know your season's over here but i want to fight for it at least you have vegas who has a deep stacked team and colorado who is also deep and stacked but all their best parts are hurt and i know mark stone's coming back from injury but uh if we're
Starting point is 00:33:11 doing a contest here uh colorado's way more beat up and there was no amount of wanting it that i think would have allowed them to overcome that but that's the reality of playoff hockey everybody's going to be injured everybody's going to beat up taking it up nothing away from vegas yeah yeah like colorado you're gonna have to face that next year like you're gonna be injured when it comes to playoffs and that's gonna be a reality every year maybe build a deeper team so then when because mark stone was out vegas was fine and he comes in and scores two goals immediately if one of your top players are out you gotta have somebody to step up steve you can't make this about the leafs Oh, man, would you want to bet?
Starting point is 00:33:48 So because of the Nick Waugh trade, the Leafs have Colorado's 2027 first. And it's top 10 protected. But with all the injuries they have and not knowing the severity and how old a lot of the team is, like they won the President's Trophy and it's a long way down from President's Trophy
Starting point is 00:34:11 to not missing the playoffs. listen colorado could contend next year and it would be zero surprise to me it also wouldn't be a surprise at all if they struggled like hell it's not that far down because uh you make a phone call to winnipeg and they say yeah that happened to us yeah that literally happened this year my bad my bad it literally happened this what you're saying isn't crazy because this current season we're in is where it happens two of the four division winners nuts despite it just happening in front of our eyes two division winners from last season were lottery teams this year leafs and winnipeg isn't that nuts yeah so but colorado it's that kind of league right to their
Starting point is 00:34:49 credit they don't have a gm who doesn't understand protections on draft picks and didn't say hey there's gonna be top five protected they did a reasonable top 10 yeah unlike brad who didn't know how to do that hey and you know what you know and he brad indiana jones that shit He slid right under the door, reached back, grabbed his hat. That's my parting gift to you, man. That's my parting gift to you. It was all on purpose. Man.
Starting point is 00:35:17 You know what? Maybe we were too hard on him in December. Thank God he didn't do anything to make the team better. You know what? Imagine where we would be now. You know what? Now, what? I just, I should reach out to him.
Starting point is 00:35:27 Yeah, I never said thank you. And he just goes, and you'll never have to. I do want to ask about the Avalanche Cup window. because I do think you guys have some points there. First off, I don't think it's over next season. No, you have Kale McCarr and you have Nathan McKinnon. But Kale is up. And we haven't heard anything about that contract.
Starting point is 00:35:46 But I feel like, to me, Kale McCarr is the first $20 million man in the NHL followed immediately by Conor McDavid. And deservedly so. But with Colorado's system, which is depleted, and Colorado's picks that are depleted, um i'm looking at the colorado team and i'm going well they got two good goalies yes they've got really good depth up front blackwood was pretty good blackwood was really good he should have been in game three let's just be honest he was the only one trying yeah and man
Starting point is 00:36:15 those two saves on dorothea one with the blocker and one with the glove on the same power play i was like holy shit i mean phenomenal i'm willing to let a lot go for colorado just because of how things broke yeah for them and also vegas is really strong that's one decision where i'm like fuck man like you it should have been too it you should have gone into last night with it being a two one series you had a three nothing lead yep but if your goalie's throwing blocker saves into the slot i'm looking though good reason at the at the long term two to three year thing which is why it would be fun if the the pick slides next year to 2028 because uh even though it won't um the the abs you know cadre played really really well i don't think bednar played him enough and he
Starting point is 00:36:59 should have been up on mckinnon's line they did not adjust landis cog was a non-factor i know he scored a couple times in the series was not good natius was awful natius had an awful series and the hurdle took him out and there were canes fans who were like in my in the chat going this is the natius we know from the conference finals and so they've got some they've got some things to work through but the thing that i think really stung them is you know sam malinsky looked really really good most of the season in a puck moving role behind kale mccarr which gives you a lot of shielding right when kale mccarr uh went out it was i guess on tase and malinsky to get it done and they didn't and brent burns looked good in the anaheim series looks pretty good in the in
Starting point is 00:37:43 the utah series unplayable in this series and not and i know he's 41 but you can't have i mean brent burns and nick blankenberg you've got you've got to have some movement back there vegas is a nightmare matchup for brent burns oh yeah speed and and honestly one of the most underrated players if not the most underrated player in colorado's 2022 cup run i thought was josh manson yeah i thought he was good in this series i thought he had some good moments some bad penalties but that's josh manson bad penalties and he's not at 100 right and i know no one's at 100 but he's like particularly we're talking missed games not 100 which colorado just has more of than everyone else right like i'm gonna i'm not taking anything away from vegas i'm not
Starting point is 00:38:31 um you don't get to play series like a video game you know you don't you don't get to play them where everyone's at 100 that's not how it works but if i'm chris mcfarland you mentioned the marty niches thing he's got 30 days ish to trade that player like that that's what you think you trade marty niches on october 30th marty niches signed an 11.5 million dollar contract with the apps that's gonna be just an anchor on this team if this is the player you get in the playoffs and it's there's so much time and proof that this is who he is in the playoffs that it's not worth it when that money needs to be reallocated to places like okay brett kulak's probably not your answer there long term um i i agree with your brett burns point like
Starting point is 00:39:19 he's old and he's not going to be there for much longer you gotta reallocate that 11.5 million dollars i would move off of marty niches if you could let's describe let's let's let's describe some things about marty niches awesome skater great regular season producer kind of disappears the deeper you go into the playoffs um bit overpaid for his position trade him to vegas cup well i i look at niches and i go yeah you're gonna get i mean the guy got 100 points this year right so there'll be there'll be people that will take and that will be by the way that 11 and a half or whatever he's gonna make that's gonna be underpaid uh very soon but i don't know i don't know how you tell a guy like that who makes that money who had that many points
Starting point is 00:40:06 to i don't know who's telling him to race it down into the vegas zone and give it immediately to william carlson um like and i when we talk about when i say dead zoning a puck dead zoning a puck is what if you're a leaf fan what kasperi kapanen used to do which was race down uh run out of options completely and then do a dribbly little shit pass rather than dumping it deep it's one of the most frustrating things i've ever seen live once you once you see it you can never not see players dead zoning but i think it was game three i want to say 2019 that's when marner had the big block at the end of the game i was at that game yeah we all were and i had a great seat down it's amazing and uh when when the leafs were attacking in my direction
Starting point is 00:40:55 here comes the captain there stops capping and where's the puck going it's gone yeah matthews was on the line with young caponin and young johnson there's a reason andreas johnson that's crazy oh johnson was better in the playoffs on purpose you know when i look at the the the adjustments bednar did make he pulled nature's off that line and put leckanen up there yeah and i don't think it's giving him the 11 point million 11.5 million dollars is gonna be worth it and like you mentioned his 100 point season that season's an outlier marty niches is probably more the 85 point player that he was in all of the previous seasons his other career high came the year before 83 points and they're talking 53 71 40 41 36 is that just carolina being carolina
Starting point is 00:41:42 though sure but like good players put up points like they they had a unbelievable season this year the avalanche they did they're far and away the best team at putting the puck in the back of the net that's gonna drive niches's numbers and he's gonna look a little better than he should sure and is that going to be every year is that going to be the output you're paying for and then when the playoffs come around and the game changes and they're not that team is he gonna sink to what he is now in the playoffs there was a time in carolina it was either at the beginning of last year the season before where he was the league's leading scorer for like a month and a half like by a wide margin it was like three points a game it was insane so like i don't necessarily think it's
Starting point is 00:42:22 carolina thing um again like listen to what we're talking about you saying he was one of the leaders and points that he led the league yeah but then that's a bad thing because then he fell off he ended up with 83 points right and he was leading the league so what's his points per game in that stretch where he came back down to earth right so the 2027 first round pick that i'm talking about it sounds insane and now listen to the follow-up conversation is should they trade marty niches i don't know this and are they going to be able how are they going to be able to re-sign kale mccarr like this is a team with an abundance of talent so they're in a good position in that regard but a huge number of questions well let me give you are they going to fire let me give you
Starting point is 00:43:11 let me give you another one kale mccarr by the way his contract isn't up till next season yeah Yeah, but it's the Quinn Hughes thing, right? Yeah. So let me throw this at you. Even in today's NHL with the cap exploding, 35 points, 60 games. What's that worth? 35 points and 60 games.
Starting point is 00:43:31 Are we talking about a forward or a D? Talking about forward. What do you think that's worth? 35 points and 60 games. At 33. At 3 million max? Three to five. Apparently the word on the street is some of the UFA centers are looking for five and a half.
Starting point is 00:43:48 Well, yeah, if they're a center, you jack it up. If they're right-handed, you jack it up. If they hit, you jack it up. That's Gabriel Landis-Cogg's numbers this year. And listen, if you look at his stat line, he had 11 points in 13 games in the playoffs and was great in the Minnesota series and was great in the King series. But we all do. Everybody was great in the King series.
Starting point is 00:44:06 It was like fucking, they just ran him over, right? It's hard to. Yeah, it's the Harlem Globetrotters, right? Like what everyone knew, but I knew, you know, the thing with Gabriel Landeskog, emotional leader, amazing story that he's come back. But if you look at his stat line in this series, and he is one of the Colorado, he was the Colorado leader in goals in this series with two. Jeez.
Starting point is 00:44:31 If you look at his stat line and debate me that he should be that high in the lineup, then I know you didn't watch. He had a goal yesterday on a play he didn't create. He tipped it in. And that's great. but he's a skill it's a skill three years left and the little anchor sign next to him on puckpedia which is a no move clause which was signed obviously before the injury yeah at seven million dollars now that is a useful player lower in the lineup gabriel landis cog cannot be in your
Starting point is 00:45:01 top six next year cannot and and i'm and i your captain yeah well there's been plenty of captains that are depth players or maybe it's time to make McKinnon the captain I'll tell you this people were talking about Nathan McKinnon's body language and he's horrific I don't blame him he's the only one who created anything on offense he's the only one Nazem Kadri a little bit Nate just had one play the entire series that I went wow that'll bring you out of your seat and that was the Nazem Kadri goal I'm telling you Nathan McKinnon was on an island out there offensively so you you stream these games you'd know way better than i would i saw a notion out there that mckinnon didn't do a okay let's go pre-knee injury sure sure he didn't do a good enough job using his teammates
Starting point is 00:45:47 they're not in position right and they and when he passes to them what you know when he's talking about execution he's talking about okay i'm coming through center through the neutrals let's x's and o's this okay what a lot of teams will do is they'll stand the guy at the blue line you pass the puck to the guy at the blue line he carries it over and immediately passes back to you right that's what mckinnon does on rush chances a lot you see mcdavid do that plenty of teams do that uh if he did that with natchez what did i just tell you about natchez uh dribble pass landis kog can't get there can't get there and they put leckanen on at the last minute and it should have been cadre they should have moved cadre up the line not to belabor the point
Starting point is 00:46:28 but leckanen there's another guy who didn't he miss an entire series yeah like i mean they're all injured yeah but like if you're criticizing nathan mckinnon for playing too much hero ball again i'm gonna ask you who did anything else to to necessitate nathan mckinnon giving them the puck brock like was brock nelson was a ghost absolute ghost and then he got that he was so effective for them he got he got um he got that breakaway yesterday uh and he just shot it at the pad yeah brock you know carter hart is aces on the first shot so your your solution is not to do what jack drury did which is deke deke the pants off the guy that was crazy your chalupin is give him exactly what he wants i can't believe that wasn't the dagger you know what i mean should
Starting point is 00:47:16 have been should have been should have been this is all right let's see how they defend without killing the car and oh heavens i think was nelson or nature's late when they were six on five and They did score six on five, had a wide open shot at the net, and they fucking whistled it wide. They had so many missed shots in these series. Forget the lack of rebounding, which is a huge problem. They always get the first shot through, and if Carter Hart doesn't absorb it, they never got the rebound. But you have a wide open net. How many times did I watch Nelson, Natchez, Lekkonen?
Starting point is 00:47:46 I don't care that you're injured. Are you playing? Then you've got to convert. You've got to convert, and you didn't. And you know who was super injured but did convert? Kale McCarr. Kale McCarr was phenomenal. And he was hard.
Starting point is 00:47:58 He's playing at like 70%. That's the, listen, we're well documented on our dislike for Mike Babcock. But like he never had time for the injury shit. Because it's like, are you ready to go or not? He's not a doctor. Yeah. Jared Bednar is not a doctor. Yep.
Starting point is 00:48:14 Can you play or not? Yep. And I know it's an uncomfortable reality, but a guy like Landis Kog just can't be that far up. He can't. uh brock nelson listen uh all due respect to how what a great regular season he had great first two rounds he had uh maybe it is jesse what you say jared bednar leaving somebody else coming in and taking that role and having a new set of eyes on what is objectively an extraordinarily deep forward pool he's been there i don't think people understand how long he's been there
Starting point is 00:48:43 he remember that year they finished last by like a mile 2013 14 i think no one performed well mckinnon played like shit and which earned him the contract that essentially won colorado the cup because because he was making up until like 2022 like six million dollars yeah something 6.5 is insane yep it was insane best contract in hockey calvin pickard played 55 games yeah i'm sorry don't don't rewind i'll do i'll do it not for the oiler calvin pickard was their undisputed starter bednar was the coach of that team yep and i remember being like talking about what they're gonna do next year and being like well they're obviously gonna fire bednar and avalanche fans clowning me like they were the ones going no no no you don't understand
Starting point is 00:49:38 like there's a few things about this team this and this and this ranting and kids gonna come up you just wait and i'm like i don't know they turned the corner immediately bednar was the coach of that team that garbage pile team so he's been their coach for this entire window the whole thing yeah might be time for some new blood it might be time and it doesn't mean he's a bad coach jesse how much how much would you wait vegas being great and injuries against each other in this so colorado injured vegas great both true what what percentage do you give in terms of what how it affected the series yeah i don't think there's enough conversation about how good vegas was in this series and how good they have been in the playoffs and there's a lot there's some
Starting point is 00:50:26 numbers that support that we should have kind of seen some of this coming out of vegas because they're really good at shot uh suppression yep so they're second in the league at shots against They only allowed 24.4 shots against per game. That's second in the league, just behind Carolina. Expected goals against per 60. They led the league. They do not allow opponents to get anything going in this playoffs. They've just added to that, plus had this crazy shot blocking ability.
Starting point is 00:50:59 And I believe they're second in the regular season in shots against in high danger areas. And they've only ramped that up in the playoffs there. And I thought they've just eaten up the best players on the abs like Jack Eichel on the final push of the game when they had the six on five. And I don't know if you remember this, Adam, but when he was on Nathan McKinnon one on one along the boards and McKinnon couldn't get the pass to anybody and he threw just a floater into the slot because no one was there. and jack eichel ate him up and this is one of the best defensive teams i think we've seen in a long time every forward in the lineup for vegas is a two-way forward and they all play this exceptional 200 foot game it starts with eichel because i think his game is so good on both ends the team centered on him oh yeah and everybody kind of plays that and then when you see william carlson come back which they didn't even have in the regular season and all of the numbers support
Starting point is 00:52:00 that they're one of the best defensive teams from like their four group in the regular season and they didn't have them for all of it and then they add them to that team for the playoffs and they've just turned everything up to 11 there's this is a really good team here and i think the abs realized that there's another step up and how many punch holes do you think are are in the wall of uh bruce cassidy's basement oh yeah oh yeah carlson changes the complexion of this team time again he didn't get he set the system up like bruce cassidy is what he he had them playing this type of hockey and john tortorella came in there left the system alone got them to do more motivational stuff well and the block shocking the block and get in the way of pucks and he
Starting point is 00:52:54 created a team attitude that's allowed them to all galvanize around each other and play this type of because their feelings were hurt after what bruce cassidy said about them last year when they got fucking stomped by the oilers let's call that it's actually been like a perfect combination of a season uh for the vegas golden knights and that's why they're in the finals and you know getting clowned for the marner stuff but one thing i was wrong about like with vegas i talked about how they've well i've talked about how they've never truly replaced alex petrangelo and obviously they haven't but i'm not even going to hold that as a mark against them because how do you replace alex petrangelo but i was skeptical about the move to go out and get
Starting point is 00:53:34 rasmus anderson for all his warts uh if he has some in his defensive zone you know what he does he blocks a shit load of shots yeah i gotta be honest with you on that one um i i don't see a fit there i think like long term my personal opinion is and i have no insight on this but if i were to guess he's a free agent this summer yeah i don't think he's staying and like i but i think he's completely lost in that system really does not contribute everybody blocks shots in the vegas system everybody blocks shot yeah but it's something he already does you know what i mean fair enough yeah i think i i'm not trying to um downplay what you're saying he does yeah i think he's completely overrated wow i do not that's a wild thing i'm not buying the rasmus anderson
Starting point is 00:54:17 um uh i'm not buying the stock wow and you know what in calgary he looked great with wieger uh in that but those two guys i know they didn't play on the same line but you know what i mean both of them block a shitload they both both block a shitload of shots and here's the thing on bad teams somebody's got to score on bad teams someone has to block a ton of shots yes and somebody's got to run the power play um i don't see rasmus anderson on a great team like Vegas he doesn't stand out wow you see McNabb stands out Theodore stands out those are standout hockey players I am not that's how you win a cup I never see Rasmus Anderson take control of a play wow ever ever and you know what you can be you could be mad at me for that but Vegas fans know
Starting point is 00:55:01 they know they were talking on the chat I was like is this guy a little overrated and they're like he's fine I guess but and you know he plugs a hole for them he's better than Brent Burns in the top four way better right but i'm just saying of the top four defensemen he's the fourth by a mile and it's it's it doesn't mean that he's number well but if he wants like 10 or 11 million dollars this summer which is reportedly what he wants i thought that was a great joke if timothy lilligren's making 3.25 he might have a point but i'm just saying like to me if i'm vegas i try to find another solution there because there's well like here's the thing you spent a lot to get them if you win the cup no one's gonna give a shit exactly and i don't know they're gonna be kind
Starting point is 00:55:44 of capped and they got dorfayev to worry about right i don't know how they keep anderson there unless he's willing to take a massive haircut because dorfayev is special that's a special hockey player i'd have to go back but i feel like remember everyone's like oh marner and eichel marner and eichel and i was like i think he's gonna play with dorfayev well that was they they did say that kelly mccrimmon at the press conference is like well uh we're gonna we're gonna start him with eichel and somebody in the press corps was like well who's gonna shoot he's like well one of them has to jack eichel's got no they do not jack eichel's got a goal in the playoffs that's crazy a goal and they're going to the cup final yeah yeah like it's just not what
Starting point is 00:56:18 they do now marner is shooting and that's how i know he's confident when he shoots he's confident when he doesn't shoot he's not confident we know him uh but yeah rasmus anderson for me i'm like uh one of the one of the guys a guy who were dylan coglin i think had a better is it wow i think Yeah, Coughlin was more effective. Jeez. And that Marner, that second line last night was Howden, Carlson, Marner. That's a crazy fucking line, by the way. Howden, Marner actually.
Starting point is 00:56:46 Wait, delete this. Delete that. Marner, Howden, Marner. Like, there's chemistry there. There is. So anyway, let's move on. I want to quickly actually mention the Colorado thing. If this is the end of Bednar, if the Leafs are deeply serious about David Carl, I think they just lost him.
Starting point is 00:57:03 Because he's, you know, he's got a young family. every every david carl report is young family um our social media guy justin fisher pointed this out he's right and yeah i get it he's got a young family uh the denver job might have just opened up well okay here's why we're uh cynical about that kind of thing uh-huh at kyle dubas's final press conference with the leafs he's like i don't know i gotta young family i gotta i gotta think about like what this is doing and like how much i'm working or like i'm paraphrasing like moments away from being like i'm becoming an account i'm retiring i'm going to construction like i'm done with i don't know if i can do this i think i'm gonna quit i'm gonna take a promotion in a race
Starting point is 00:57:44 yeah what yeah i'm gonna sign for seven years and 50 million dollars and i'm moving to pennsylvania it's so what like everyone was so caught up in wow so who's the next guy gonna be and and i'm like wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait you just said how exhausted you are you wanted to quit everything yes i'm gonna i'm i don't know if i can handle being gm so i'm gonna become president and do a gm search let me point let me put me i'm gonna so that's why we're cynical when we hear that kind of thing but it is a legitimate concern well with him it seems to be apparently he turned down like 25 30 million dollars it's black it's only a issue because he has the power to make it a thing if he needed the job right he would make caveats for his family
Starting point is 00:58:36 and be like okay no we need to go make this 25 million dollars we're moving but he doesn't need to do that like two or three so now it can be a hey oh this is one thing unless it's a perfect situation he's not going to do it because he doesn't need to do it and he also didn't need to do it the young family wouldn't matter he'd move them i i also think i think you're right jesse college coaches get paid a lot more than you'd think and uh and also like listen if if he comes to toronto and he lasts three seasons and he's moved his whole family i understand like ah fuck it but denver being open i'm like that's an easy one and well i mean thing with the abs like there's also rumors about chris mcfarland leaving this could be a total change that i was shocked by
Starting point is 00:59:15 could be going to nashville to be the president so you know the this could be a total management reboot in colorado this summer it's very interesting telling you listen i well it obviously can't end up in the lottery that is a fascinating draft pick oh the next year yes yeah yes especially if it slides fascinating draft i think there's still a playoff team i do too i think toronto will be picking i thought the least would be two men yeah man i thought would be the jets you nailed it earlier when you said the jets it's you're right jesse i think they're better mckinnon landis cog kale mccarr there's a floor there with this team that i don't think like the leafs had no no of course but then you find out i guess we're gonna get answers in
Starting point is 01:00:06 the coming days because then it's gonna be like uh oh this guy's getting surgery he'll be out till christmas and all of a sudden it's oh shit like i i don't know it's gonna change your perspective you're you're right that anything can happen yeah anything can happen and like listen everyone starts the season healthy yeah of course like make the playoffs they might win the division again like yeah totally but also miss yeah they could also miss it legitimately on the table sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean
Starting point is 01:00:47 all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and they're way around on that it's like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper thing and the and the washer thing chemicals you gotta have the right chemicals see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and I employed a Tasker. Starting point is 01:02:06 Together, we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer. Register today at pmcfwalk.ca. because let's just call it what it is i know habs fans are riding a high and they're thrilled and everything and they're they're going to come at me and go how could you doubt us um the the thing is is that i've seen the way they've played over the last two games they're doubting them i had a conversation with someone the other day where they were like well you know it was it was fun past tense oh yeah oh because they're so you want to talk about house money we're here yeah yeah Yeah, for sure.
Starting point is 01:02:56 We're here. And I know that because some Habs fans are already talking about it. Like they've lost because I think what's so surprising about this Habs run, like here's what you like last year, they make the playoffs. They don't do anything in them. Really? They lose, but everyone's like, you know what? They made the playoffs.
Starting point is 01:03:16 They got some experience. Great. They go into that series against Tampa. And what did I say? I go, well, I know it's Tampa and you probably bet on Tampa. you don't want to become the leafs you don't want to become the young team that makes it and they lose the series they were supposed to lose to washington and then the next year you lose again and it's kind of this arrested development you don't want that to happen and
Starting point is 01:03:42 then you beat tampa then you play buffalo and you beat them and all of a sudden you want it all And after three games, it's fairly obvious that that's going to be really difficult. That's going to be really hard. And they're talking about it past tense because I think what's so surprising about this run is this is not close to the best Montreal Canadiens team we're going to see over the next, I was going to say five years. How about next 365 days? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:04:16 They're going to be better at the beginning of next season. yep oh yeah yep they've learned a lot they've matured a lot reinbacher is not a full-time nhl player yet michael hage uh hagi you mean hagi borghini friggin pasta tortellini uh hasn't i still can't believe that shit i still i still cannot believe that shit that was so many press conferences ago and i can't believe you said that shit anyway um you know think of where they end up in the standings if they don't get several months of unplayable sam montembeau yeah good point unplayable yeah sam montembeau and you're gonna replace him with fowler who's another kid and so montembeau's contract comes off the books linea's contract comes off the books yes
Starting point is 01:05:02 yeah this isn't even close to the best version we're gonna see this team they could probably take a huge swing in free agency or in the trade market well on any on whoever the top candidate it is and get them maybe not talk because you watched them play for seven games right yeah but someone you could you could take a big swing on whatever you want so the fact they've come this far is somewhat of a surprise it's a bit of a delight and if it ends here i think people are at peace with it but to that i would say you're seven wins away and boy it'd be nice to get there Like, don't don't hedge. Don't hedge. You cheer for sports. You cheer for a team because of the euphoria that comes with victory. And a lot of you listening have experienced that in your lifetime. I have not. I yearn for it with every fiber of my being. Please don't ever abandon an opportunity to win the Stanley Cup because I would love it. Can I ask Steve about the controversies that came out of the game?
Starting point is 01:06:08 I would love that. Hit me. Steve, you need to make both fan bases upset. Oh, let's go. I can't wait for you to get eclipsed. So over time, there's three plays I think most people are yelling about. There's the too many men on the ice. The Habs had six guys on the ice, and Lane Hudson played the puck,
Starting point is 01:06:26 and it couldn't get to Ajo, and it was clearly too many men, and the refs didn't make the call. What do you think about that one, Steve? listen they went into this over time uh bound and determined to not call anything um i think there was a pretty clear trip we're getting to that one just focus on this one well well if you want if you want me to set them all up and then you weigh on all of them i can do that too i would i prefer that i feel like because it's a makeup for the other one well yes yes that's exactly what it is so the like i'm not looking it's the national hockey league don't overthink
Starting point is 01:07:02 this like you're like why didn't they call this individual thing it's the nhl they just decided to not call anything there was a pretty clear trip on hudson on on the puck carrier he had the puck the stick is below his skate he goes way over them you can see they're actually touching the skate there it's a trip yes he's going over it and he goes down and he is flying soaring and no call there and maybe you don't call it because i guess i can't remember the play exactly but i guess it wasn't advantage carolina because montreal i assume comes up with the puck because of dino um it's a trip call it oh it's overtime yep pretty important time of the game to do your job uh so anyway go ahead and do that and then the too many men is a too many and then they don't do
Starting point is 01:07:56 that and then the too many men so here's what i asked on the script on the stream so they didn't call too many men but did you notice that they blew the whistle and then had a face off yes why they they need to all stop and talk about the too many men that definitely didn't happen do they do that all the time they do not hey guy wheat um was that a slash i don't know i think i might have missed a slash let's have a wheat was that interference i'm not sure if that would they went listen i'm not fucking calling it yeah i i know are you i know are we all in on this we all agree that we all up yeah we're not gonna do it yeah let's look the shots are 60 to 14 um yeah this isn't gonna last long as fuck it let's i got i got dinner
Starting point is 01:08:44 reservations let's get out of here no it's it's not they're not reputable serious people and then number three on our trifecta was carry a going at lane hudson the caroline hurricanes clearly have a plan to go after hudson every chance they get and hit him and pound him because they know he's a smaller player they know the offense when he's on the ice runs through him and he's so dynamic that they just pound him pound him pound him and carry it caught him up high it's very clear an elbow to the head and this led directly to his mistake that led to the ot winner so uh i didn't see this because i don't watch the panels when i'm streaming okay was it implied that he might have made was it implied on the show that he might have made a mistake in part because he
Starting point is 01:09:32 was he was not concussed just days from a big hit that's a concussion there's a there i think there's a there's a difference between being concussed and you got to take them out for concussion protocols yeah and uh being a little dazed yeah i mean um i don't know what you want me to tell you like listen uh if it seems like i have less fire in my belly over this than with leafs things you're correct um and that's how you know who i cheer for uh i'm cheering for the leafs no you're not they don't give a fuck um it's not a serious reputable league with serious reputable people worth your time and money but we like hockey so this is what we watch um yeah it's a penalty i don't know what to tell you yep it's a penalty that's not called that leads
Starting point is 01:10:25 directly to the ot winner yep that's yeah first time listen i know hockey's got a lot of first uh first time viewers this season and um yeah that's how the shows run here uh i don't know how to yuck yuck that up i i would like to say this it's bad folks i would like to say this freddie anderson allowing two goals on 12 shots brother i i thought freddie was decent yeah i kind of hate that narrative do you hate that narrative yeah that very true narrative well if that game gets to 25 shots montreal wins and it fucking didn't i know it but i'm just saying he's not listen i i'm not here for the freddie anderson con smith talk that's no no no i'm not here for that at all i'm not here for it either not what about he did enough for them to win the
Starting point is 01:11:11 game he did enough for them to win the game i and and i and that's fair but like i'm sorry the goals he's a i'm just i thought it was two decent goals yeah i thought it was two decent goals okay the shots boy people love making making uh excuses for this guy no it's crazy i'm not giving him no i know but i'm not crazy i i think that's way overdone and like i think they could win it in five and he could not allow a goal or sorry he could not allowing a goal might change it but if he allows two goals and carolina scores three for each of the remaining games um at some point as a cons my voter you have to be like well he didn't have to do anything that's my point right no no so i'm on board with that but if of course if you look at it statistically
Starting point is 01:12:00 it's shit it's shit it's awful but the only shots getting through are like good because that's all carolina doesn't make many mistakes they don't all montreal has done all playoff long is take advantage of mistakes and make goalies look like shit yeah okay you know what i mean so i don't think freddie's been bad but to then take that and be like well he should win the con smith i'm like okay okay yeah like listen that's my point the two goals on monday if nobody remembers cole caulfield comes in on what is really a breakdown on the power play because you shouldn't have that much momentum off the rush just allowing a guy come over the blue line and lane hudson's there coming up the middle jumping up with the the forward and they have a
Starting point is 01:12:46 back and forth and it's a one-time pass and he beats freddie there and i don't know how much freddie's supposed to do there on that breakdown then the other one is a wired shot by mike matheson who has a good shot man he i thought he was the most hated defenseman in montreal dude he had a laser beam of a shot and then he hit a crossbar and a post he could have could have had a hat trick and the disallowed goal that went in on freddie was knocked in by his own player yeah you know what i mean i don't know freddy was decent to me what do you think about the conversation it's it's offside there's no argument yes i believe the timer was somewhere between 30 and 35 seconds after the offside doesn't matter
Starting point is 01:13:32 all right i guess that's where we're at you can't let's not add more rules to the thing no i know already so convoluted i've but i've already said it is legally possible for the opening face-off of a game to happen yes the opening face-off happens the puck goes into the offensive zone and it stays there for 19 minutes and 59 seconds they score in the final second of the period challenge they challenge it it's offside do you replay the period no i think i'm with you i think the timer needs to happen should be 30 seconds no then but then you get into a situation where guys will start ragging the puck if they came in offside and then once that 30 seconds expired damn then it's like okay now it's free an offensive zone puck rag is nuts you can just
Starting point is 01:14:21 that's crazy wait there for 31 seconds if you came in offside so here's the other that's hilarious then get the fucking call right guys jesus no the i think the best solution is if they just had uh maybe they use the technology that's already in the puck and the cameras around the arena to make the call in real time and if somebody comes in offside the guy who's in the booth and watching every game that happens across the nhl play uh calls the play dead yeah would puck technology have worked on this one though because it would have it had to deal with a player who was across the blue line but might have had possession of the puck if the puck technology isn't there to do something like that like it's not if you couldn't do it as good as tennis let's
Starting point is 01:15:05 say and it's not instance or abs and baseball use the system using right now but have a guy who watches every single crossing of the blue line and then if he sees that it's offside whistle down it's in the ear of the fucking head ref like he's got a little earpiece call him yeah what if the best outcome is the one that happened they got the call right yeah yeah that's fine too i don't know like listen i i just talked about how refs stink but like we have so much technology now that you can just get calls right and you have enough money nhl to just pay people sit around for that shit and just make right calls that i hate that it's a gamified system i'll never get over that where it's like okay in order to get the call right which is the whole point of the sport
Starting point is 01:15:56 you have rules there's a reason you can't pick up the puck in your hand and walk it into the net and say that's a goal because there's a rule against that and in order to get the rules right you need the coaches to play a little game with the refs and their challenge system i've always thought that's ridiculous it was west macaulay right on that game i don't remember well i i would just like to know what the line is because what you suggested isn't that's insane you can't do that what just like just picking up the puck and putting it into the net yeah same oh okay well can you just boot the puck into the net well no you can't do that can you head puck head butt the puck into the net well no you can't do that okay can i bring a crowbar under the ice and hit my
Starting point is 01:16:38 opponent no okay can i elbow them in the head sometimes well yeah yeah that's okay okay um can i just throw six guys out there yeah is one of them short accident and that way like you may be like they're not like six like full guy like i i don't like i don't i don't know there is a line so what's the line because you're a lot you're willing to let some shit go right elbow to head there's a trip but like uh no brennan gallagher no oliver capitan no arbor jack guy in this game tonight yep the habs fans are pissed they want arbor in they want strouple out i thought that was that was the best game i've seen stroop will play i know but they have a 615 winning percentage
Starting point is 01:17:26 with jack guy in the lineup and a 500 winning percentage with stroop in the lineup i think that have something to do with the games that they were playing and who they were playing i uh are you telling me arbor jack i had an enormous impact on those games he's a popular guy he's yeah he should be what okay all right i thought stroop was downright good i don't know what the numbers were i assume no one on the habs had good numbers on account of did you see the shot yeah counter yeah it was 37 to 12 in overtime um this is the carolina snake just strangling that's what they do so i was i was thinking about this in the car because you talked about um carolina being this boa constrictor what the habs are are almost like
Starting point is 01:18:14 a komodo dragon okay komodo dragon uh just uh bites you and poisons you and they let you run away and what they do is they follow you until you die so you know it's a good strategy and then they just eat you they they let you do what hey do your thing man do your thing and when you eventually make a mistake well i guess dying isn't exactly a mistake it's not an apples to apples comparison but when you are there to make your mistake we will also be there yeah don't worry take your time buddy and they will wait you out whereas the hurricanes when they're on from puck drop bite you around the neck and wrap themselves around you until you are an x thing they are as the game gets on it gets worse too like it starts and you have a little room but you but like by
Starting point is 01:19:09 overtime remember the first overtime they went to uh montreal didn't manufacture a shot it's not a chance that's and like slaven maybe that who knows how this series turns out and how the rest of this playoffs turns out but like let's say they get through montreal and they go to the final that game one might have been the best thing to ever happen in his career because he was terrible there has been great there were any time a hab tried to one-on-one him there was one i don't remember who the player was but he just said little boy took him by the chest and went fuck off for even trying that bullshit yeah i know he's i don't think he talks that way i get the impression he's a very good he's very uh good man but um yeah every time the
Starting point is 01:20:01 habs went one-on-one with jacob slavin it was like wrestling with your dad it was crazy and like keandre miller so damn good he'd led at i don't know if he ended the game this way but he led uh the game in ice time hey i got one for you to start interrupt but was it the rangers or was it keandre miller hey no no no adam i'm just asking is keandre miller an ex-leaf no well then we're not having the conversation fair enough it's boring i i don't know about the the montreal and like how they play he that kandre miller by the way did lead the team in ice time he played over 30 minutes wow um lead led everybody in the game nice time with the with the habs the way they play and how they've played these couple games is it a flaw or is it their
Starting point is 01:20:50 plan because in both games and especially in in game three there where they actually do get the go-ahead goal they're in both of those games where they're one goal away in overtime you never know how a bounce goes and they're very close to being up three oh in this series yeah if a couple different bounces go different ways so even though you look at the expected though goal meter and you say oh carolina every single time they're supposed to be winning all these things because the meter says so is that just how the habs like playing and they just capitalize on their opportunities and when they do they're in every single one of these games and there's one goal away jesse you said are the habs this or that and i'm here to tell you yes like uh i know i i do it's it's funny
Starting point is 01:21:35 like i don't think anyone looks at this and goes oh they suck and they luck their way to the conference final and this is how the habs play and this is how the hurricanes play and there's a reason why the shots have been 11 t billion to 12 and uh the last two games have gone to overtime right i think we've seen it enough in these two games outside of game one which is kind of an outlier and weird that that's kind of how they want to play like this and it's not that they're getting so caved in it's this is how they're happy playing and they can win games like this the the easy narrative adam is freddie anderson stinks and dobish is awesome yeah no i'm just i'm messing with you like don't listen dobish has been awesome and freddie has been overrated
Starting point is 01:22:26 he's been what he needs to be he's been what he needs to be but like matheson how many posted montreal hit you know what well it couldn't have been more than 12 no i'm kidding that doesn't count as a shot and they had another goal that went in but it was offside by like four or five millimeters and so we got to call it back right and that's that's not salt or shade it's just it is what i think both teams are playing their games here and this is a really close series totally despite what the shot counter might say and the expecto window meter might say i like that it's real this we always want that in the playoffs this is a really tight series and i think both teams are playing their games really well after game one which i think is still an outlier games
Starting point is 01:23:12 two and three were fantastic hockey the series is two one in the last two games have gone to overtime yeah and also if i'm not mistaken that wasn't the first overtime these playoffs for montreal failed to get a shot uh there was one in the tampa that tampa won i can't remember crozier i can't remember who ended up scoring it um i don't think they got a shot or they were it was like nine one they played this hockey against buffalo and they won in game seven they played this hockey against tampa and they won in game seven so i think this is kind of how the hockey they want to play this playoffs. Sometimes you can ride a high goaltender, man.
Starting point is 01:23:53 Buffalo's a great team. Well, and their scoring ability. Yeah. Right? That's what you got to ride. They're efficient. It's when we get our chances, we're going to put one in the back of the net.
Starting point is 01:24:00 Buffalo's a great team. They make mistakes. This is an awful stylistic matchup, actually, like for Montreal. And now it's Carolina, who's not really that at all. They had the one game that we all sort of thought they might have
Starting point is 01:24:16 where they didn't play for two weeks. and then stunk and the one of the best shutdown defensemen in the league is the worst player on the ice and he's been one of the best he's been i'm i'm amazed as someone streaming the games how seldomly i have to say his name so i haven't i never have to say it because nothing happens when he's on yeah he's the nothing maker and the only times they go one-on-one with him he just little boy yep get out of my face steve why are you wearing shorts on your head because they're just so comfortable uh chubby shorts uh these are the things you need to wear this summer and guess what we've got a a discount for you now here's the thing about chubby shorts if you've
Starting point is 01:25:02 been uh if you've been sort of waiting like hey i need to i need to look at my wardrobe this summer maybe i got some shorts that fit a little tight or whatever these are stylish and comfortable and you won't want to take them off and it's lightweight fabric yes jesse adam are you a because these these shorts i'm holding right now there are five and a half inseam are you a five and a half inseam on your short guy or are you a seven i i can be either because sometimes i'm wearing a seven right now okay but i do have some fives yeah and sometimes you know sometimes a five's a good thing if you're feeling a little bit more dangerous yeah especially at the pool you know You got to show off
Starting point is 01:25:39 that skin a little bit. A little more risque. Absolutely. I'll be honest. I know the teeny tiny inseam is in. Give me the big one. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:25:47 Steve, we should get you in like a three or a four. Golly. Why not? Yeah, nothing to the imagination. We're asking for accidents. Whether you're dressed up for your workday,
Starting point is 01:25:58 a workout, or summer vacation, Chubby's is you covered. Code is SDPChubbiesShorts.com. That's code SDP at Chubby. C-H-U-B-B-I-E-S Shorts.com. Support our show. Tell them we sent you.

Starting point is 01:26:43 Let's talk a little bit of the head coaching stuff around the league because Craig Berube is making news in Edmonton, according to the CJ show. And weirdly enough, I had an Instagram DM that I just was like, I'm suspicious of this. But somebody actually DMed me last week and said, you're not going to believe this, but my friend's at the airport right now. and they have a picture of craig berube and connor mcdavid sitting down to lunch together at the airport and i was like i was like okay and i was like listen if it's not ai how many fingers did they all have that's super interesting and then cj reports on the cj show yesterday
Starting point is 01:27:17 that um actually they accidentally ran into each other at the airport so connor was coming back to toronto because he was in the off season and berube was leaving toronto to go to edmonton to talk about the job so the dm also from alberta so the dm i got yeah was legit you had an exclusive i could have got everybody but they didn't send me the picture i should ask for the picture that's crazy i should ask for the picture all right so everybody out there dm adam yeah random stuff yeah that are fake and i'm gonna have and now we're gonna believe them all so do you know about uh a brett lebda and hf boards yes i do the brett so you can explain these are the elder scrolls yes this is a long time ago so like back before social media there was hf boards and it's just
Starting point is 01:28:04 basically i don't know how would you even describe it was like reddit before reddit they were hockey they were like a chat room but it was like bored analog discord yeah like where you'd have to refresh to make sure you got the next comment in right um and someone's like hey i heard brett lebeda signing with the leafs and i heard that because of this this and this and this person was trashed so badly that i think they banned them and nobody knew who brett leptin was anyway he was with detroit oh okay right but i think they banned their account and then he signed with the leafs and everyone had to be like sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry about that sorry hilarious and then he was bad yeah um so uh also should be mentioned he was quite so they
Starting point is 01:28:45 had an impromptu meeting apparently cj confirmed that which is hilarious uh and then he met with the oilers brass for three to four hours and you know i would expect a job interview of that importance to be that why was it so short well yeah because when it's 12 hours when brad living and sheldon keith when we're first introduced how long did they say that meeting it was like a week together they went to the cottage it was insane it was insane it was like an 11 i think they said 11 or 12 hour meeting that i had or something like that i'm like i don't does that so you mean you work together okay like i i don't know i i the gm and the head coach probably need to spend a lot more than 11 hours together to get to know each other mlsc has such
Starting point is 01:29:32 a weird culture okay guys we're gonna play a little game called 17 hours in heaven yeah yeah both of you get in this little cupboard and just chat it out so they so berube obviously lives in albert or from albert i don't know if he lives there but uh met with the oilers brass for three to four hours i here's the thing if berube to edmonton is a possibility which it sounds like it is um i'm curious what berube they get do they get a berube who has because here's the thing i'm you know eating the mitch marner shit sandwich that we're eating this year i'm like are they gonna get a berube who all of a sudden is not the craig berube that we've known in toronto which is don't like young players slow the pace down all defense get outshot to hell rely on elite
Starting point is 01:30:16 goaltending for success or are we going to get craig berube who's all of a sudden become dan muse and wants a free-flowing game and has learned his lesson i don't know how many times i can say i don't think he's a bad coach but he's not a bad coach it's just that system did you watch this season of leaf hockey it was a fucking nightmare edmonton it was unwatchable slop Edmonton system is if I were to I would say they are a better version of the Leafs were trying to be before Berube showed up and a far more successful version high flying big offense yes you're going to concede some goals yes you have some weaknesses but you have the two best players on earth like I just don't know like Berube the what the team he won with in in St.
Starting point is 01:30:57 Louis is not how the Oilers are built and so I'm curious about like what takeaways would he have What is he saying to Stan Bowman, who I think objectively could be one of the worst general managers in the league right now, is, from my mind, one of the worst general managers in the league right now? What is he saying to convince Stan, who is, I think, easily suggestible? I won the cup once. And Stan's like, I got three. And I don't know, man.
Starting point is 01:31:22 To me, it's like, I'm curious about that. Like, if Bruce Cassidy is really not going to be available unless Bruce Cassidy says to Vegas, OK, I'll walk away from my deal. Because that's the word, right? this is a vegas pressure tactic with bruce cassidy they don't want to pay him and they don't want to pay the difference so what they're saying is you can sit they should never get that you could sit they shouldn't never uh or or you can walk away from your deal the nhl's position is vegas is within their rights and they are and so vegas is basically it's been floated out there
Starting point is 01:31:52 already we will we will walk away from this deal if you'll walk away from it but otherwise you're gonna sit so if bruce cassidy's off the table for the oilers they gotta pivot um brube's out there lavia let apparently his name has come up uh-huh uh it sounds like they're going retread sounds like they want guy with huge huge experience because last time they went with new guy knoblock right well and woodcroft so they've actually gone to new guy oh yeah woodcroft too you're right i have to tip it they're due for a retread so they are so i mean devore is not available i'm sure they would have loved that i'm curious about this this berube feels there's something about this that feels like it's almost like when john sheik his name kept coming up for
Starting point is 01:32:35 toronto we're like there's something weird about this okay this is gonna happen isn't it here's the one undeniable thing about craig berube the the there's the good the bad and the ugly the one undeniable thing is when his system is working he gets elite goaltending does he get elite goaltending because of the elite goaltender or does he get elite goaltending because of the system chicken and egg i don't know and if the oilers hire him we're about to find out because apparently they're not keeping conor ingram so it's going to be jari and when we don't know who the end is because pickard's gone to either jari will return to being a 930 goaltender who goes to the all-star game or craig berube commits crime by christmas
Starting point is 01:33:25 that's what happens here that you you look at jordan binnington comes in does not allow goals it's great strategy they win the cup he actually did that for like a little while longer people forget like the blues were humming for a while there they were a really good team the pucks start going in which he specifically was asked not to do and uh all of a sudden blues aren't doing very well and berube gets fired berube comes in to toronto and he lets anthony stolers know the secret sauce you know those goals you've been allowing just stop doing that yeah that's how he talks in private i know he's tough and stoic but he goes yeah just stop it more like game show hosting in private yeah yeah hey anthony and uh he stopped yeah
Starting point is 01:34:26 and then this year anthony went back on that and he decided no goal sometimes oh joseph hey you know about the no goal thing yeah no i was part of that last year oh yeah that's right okay get in there and he decided to allow goals and caden primo he never had that conversation with caden primo um i don't know how the hell that's going to work in edmonton without a goalie you need a goalie that's what what else should i say i think that's it what else should i say he's been a great coach need need a goalie yeah so if they're going to get them that's what they're going to have to get lavia let's interesting too although i don't like i'm trying to find out like does labia let's system which is also highly defensive like you look at the the the team he took to the finals
Starting point is 01:35:14 with nashville elite defensive team and had some scoring back there with suban being as good as he was back then like is that that doesn't feel oilers to me either at home but at home they're gonna be like 38 no no but i'm saying we had at home oh okay he had at home knows how to use them again that was a decade ago yeah he's not the same player he's are any of us the same that we were 10 years ago no in any way shape or form no you know uh listen they're interviewing everyone because they should be everyone's interested because they should be at the end of the day if you don't have a freaking goalie i don't know what the plan is here um jess uh any thoughts on berube and edmonton is it is it a is it going to happen and b would it work i hope he learns some
Starting point is 01:36:05 stuff from how this season went like craig berube seems like a smart guy i assume if he gets that position edmonton he'll lean on the assistant coaches that either going to be there or he'll bring in to help him rework the way he thinks about his hockey system because i don't think what he has right now with the least this past season worked and i think he'll realize that and hopefully he'll learn and make edmonton better like i can totally see that happening do you think frederick gets a revival under craig berube that's one of the worst contracts in the league right the craig berube got into like a holy war against everyone who played in the leafs bottom six and the edmonton oilers need more they need better goaltending and they need better performances
Starting point is 01:36:56 out of their depth if he wins a cup with them it will be especially hilarious because i on paper don't see them as a fit at all and i can't wait to see how they do it i think laviolette's gonna end up in la for four seasons and it'll be a very ho-hum four seasons more like la violet yeah oh he seems like a good la coach for four years do the na do the the kings just feel flat man whenever i think about them i just go i don't feel good about the kings at all in their direction at all like what tangible step forward what are they thinking i don't know yeah you're right jesse laviolette fits perfectly there he feels like a king's coach yeah just a guy that just like hill nobody fucking likes um uh and uh people get you know punted out the door immediately are great
Starting point is 01:37:55 where they go next did you know that jim hiller and freddie anderson were once on the same team at the same time really yeah i didn't know oh wait jim miller played for the leafs no he was a assistant oh okay yeah okay that part i was like you must love that they played like together that's why there was an nhl player adam's so grumpy that whole time and he didn't know why um okay next one i want to talk about this one caused a stir weirdly enough with overdrive yesterday uh it was reported that jim hiller by the way played 63 nhl games oh so he was drafted by the kings in 1989 202nd overall this is the 10th round he played 40 games for the kings 21 games for the red wings and then two games for the rangers then a bunch of
Starting point is 01:38:38 DEL, and AHL games. Rosenheim, Star Bowls. I like that. He played as recently in professional hockey as in 02, and then went right into coaching in the WHL. No, screw it. You open the page. We're doing this. No, no. Click on his Italian team.
Starting point is 01:38:54 I want to see if I recognize any of the names. All right, do it. Do it. Milan HC? The final season. Jesse's clicking it. Milan HC. Why are you hiding it from me? Because just to get it up on the screen. What are you doing? he wants to format it properly for the screen why are you hiding it i don't know them patrick
Starting point is 01:39:13 okay so here's the alexander galchenyuk i think maybe that's senior he's from belarus yeah it's gotta be his dad really wanted to see um read it out to the people nah it's not as boring well there's a galchenyuk on there and that's alexander galchenyuk so maybe that's his dad i assume that's his dad on account of i i'm not totally sure he was born 34 and 0-2 does that line up with his daddy uh i would think so well that would make him in his yeah it's probably his dad man oh i guess oh two is like you know when steve and i went to high school that's our first year in grade nine same name born in the same place yeah yeah it kind of makes sense maybe they're in the same family yeah uh that's not as how many belarusians named galchenyuk are there you never know nah
Starting point is 01:40:00 yeah massimo stevenoni let's go yeah that's what i'm rico zanichella that's what keith pelly calls me yeah yeah half of me uh okay that is his dad there you go there is confirmed i guess alice galchenyuk is a junior i did not know that yeah i didn't either there you go no the better word for it is nepo baby jesse yes nepo baby that's everybody in hockey by the way everybody absolutely every player ever where was maybe not ever where was uh galchenyuk born minsk wasn't it uh he was not born in the land so he plays internationally he played for the american team so i'm gonna say somewhere in the state milwaukee wisconsin wow yeah that's galch is american he always played for team usa and then he'd give interviews and you'd be like
Starting point is 01:40:53 what the fuck well that's cool so uh alex galchenyuk senior was a member of the milwaukee admirals at the time wow when uh the junior was born so he was right there did he did alex galchenyuk senior ever play in the nhl even a game uh i'd have to look up his dvp didn't didn't no alan just got a new client he's czech and you look birthplace and it's like new hampshire yeah yeah forget his name yeah i also never reached the nhl now play for the michigan k wings uh the madison monsters and then a bunch of teams over overseas can we start a new show that's just this but just naming guys sdp vip vip where yeah it's just naming guys the guys show just having naming guys and the show doesn't end until we've all had four beers
Starting point is 01:41:47 that's my honestly that's my nightmare because my brain goes haywire when these things come up that's actually my dream i can't focus like it's very very hard for me yo pierre hadin oh man remember pierre as i think about the other day um fucking uh carol pilash carol pilash but his name was spelled p-i-l-a-r right yes um okay let's talk leafs please uh we are love that's a former a leaf you're right yeah what are you talking about uh so is pierre hadin john also if you want to just do leafs i can confirm that bradshaw living said the meetings with keith lasted 17 hours i looked at the article from uh june of 23 i'm glad you looked that out and he said that when he because he needed to meet with keith to the same thing that chaco was doing yeah right
Starting point is 01:42:34 to see okay do i want to continue with this head coach and he said yeah we met for 17 hours that's long time you could have spread that over two days they had a sleepover i think was the strategy okay let's see if i can just get him to quit i'm just gonna tire him out i'm just gonna and then he didn't quit after 17 hours he's like i gotta keep him for the i gotta keep him jesse isn't that why you quit virgin it's just uh yeah we had 17 hour meetings we did and i was like i can't do this anymore so i i couldn't did i couldn't head coach the leafs yeah i'm gonna quit at like hour six wouldn't be for you no um when everyone's like oh yeah mcdavin berube four hour meeting isn't that crazy nope no uh because it was less than a quarter of the time that it took
Starting point is 01:43:20 true living to meet keith well i think maybe edmonton's just not as committed as we are you know what hey you know what that's why he couldn't make trades he was in 17 hour meetings all day long yes or no oh i need a 17 hour meeting for this i can't i can't make a trade i'll never not like brad personally 20 missed calls david posternak for a fourth this expires in five minutes well you win some you lose some um i i will never not like brad the person he just seems like an affable person and a good guy but man frustrating. Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer. That's why every step and dollar raised matters. On September 19th, join thousands in Toronto for the Princess Margaret

Starting point is 01:45:02 he met with they met via zoom is that shayka and sundin have a team to run and shayka was right when he said it's like trying to catch a moving train like they have got to get to this they've also like second day on the job get the first overall pick that's so hilarious so you need to be fucking sure you better be locked right and uh and matthews can't travel to come to them because he's rehabbing his knee so they hadn't been able to for a couple of weeks put together a date where both teams could because here's the thing for shika and sunday to sit fly down there they're blowing a day a day and a half there's no 17 hour meetings when you're on the plane and we're sundane right now i don't know he's at the worlds well there you go watching iver stenberg which is by
Starting point is 01:45:41 the way i actually think this is a good thing like if they had raced down there immediately i would have felt like that looked a little desperate remember you're still running the team and he's still playing for the team i think he also needed a sec yeah probably like yeah frustrated and angry and you need to sleep on it a little bit it's just also not a priority because he's under contract yeah can't go anywhere i'm also i don't know about you i'm a little i'm starting to get a little worried about how oh god i feel so stupid i'm starting to get a little worried about how optimistic i am because wait are you believing again it's not even that i'm believing it's are you excited oh he's excited i thought it would never happen again adam i've just i've had enough
Starting point is 01:46:27 time to cool down and maybe that's what matthews needed i i actually listen the first the thing for me was would they fire berube if they didn't fire berube if they've been like no we're gonna keep them i'd have been like okay i'm i have concerns but for whatever reason that was like okay so they're starting they're seeing a little bit what we're seeing here's here's the time very small bar by the way here's the timeline with jay uh chica yeah it was rumored he was going to get the job i did my research on him and i was like oh that's terrible then they hire him then they win the first overall pick then he does so far pretty much exclusively stuff i would like him to do oh yeah it was always we were listen we're rooting for you yeah i had some questions about
Starting point is 01:47:16 the hiring but we're rooting for you we want you to win believe me i will not stop eating shit sandwiches i'm not gonna watch him fire the coach i wanted him to fire and then be like but you shouldn't have drafted barrett hayton yeah like it's that's we've already covered that that's over now i like what he's doing so far which is a not very much he's been on the job for five minutes but i'm less grumpy than i was all we have is the sample size we're given that's all we have and i like it so that's all i'm saying um i'm not saying i'm jake a pill i know i know the uh the overdrive guys were or i think it was jeff o'neill that basically said that that was embarrassing i didn't understand that take to me it just seems like if you if you were racing
Starting point is 01:48:00 down there immediately to me again i feel like that seems a little bit desperate and the tail wagging the dog a little bit here yeah he also he also said uh you know regarding marner he's like oh you know people these days are idiots while essentially uh looking around the clothing store wearing a hot dog costume i just like are you are you actually joking jeff are you actually like beating the marner drum for several years and now it's everyone's an idiot these days everyone was stop it that's humiliating well anyway oh my god the thing is the thing is you know i look at i look at this and i go yeah that's the way it should go apparently the you know things are positive things are good um it's not made up yet we're not out of the woods
Starting point is 01:48:47 with this yet decision hasn't been made but having a first overall pick helps probably firing berube helps let's just be honest about that and the reason that you know when they asked shika about firing berube one of the questions was what was austin matthews involved so even if he was John's not going to tell us that. But I have a feeling that there was probably some smoke signals like, it would probably do well for you to move on from the guy that coached Matthews through his worst two offensive seasons. He's, I don't think Chayka and Matthews ever needed to exchange words
Starting point is 01:49:24 to know the answer to that. Stats say it all. Or just general looking like they hate their lives. everyone it was the most obvious thing in the world to absolutely everybody the only argument against it is well this is a culture problem this is a player problem and you just can't keep firing coaches and uh i don't know if you saw who made it to the stanley cup final yesterday but yes you can you can keep firing coaches until the problem fixes itself yeah find the right guy now one of the guys that obviously david carlton's name keeps coming coming up but one of the guys
Starting point is 01:50:03 that a lot of Leaf fans online are really interested in is the Kitchener Rangers coach who just won. His name is Jussi Ahokas. I think so. I think I said his name. A clearly Finnish guy. Leafs Nation did a bit of a deep dive on him. And, you know, he did all,
Starting point is 01:50:17 he was extremely successful basically at all levels in Finland. And he could have stayed there and coached national teams and done that, but he came over and the Rangers are, the Rangers for a while were kind of like the Leafs of the OHL. You had the London Knights just dominating you.
Starting point is 01:50:31 and since he's been there they went to the second round yeah post cadre days it's been a bit of a walk in the desert so second round first year second year third round this year championship and uh he also so this is what they said what makes him stand out as a coaching candidate is his innovative style of positionless hockey through high iq puck management controlled breakouts and five-man attack penguin the rangers will often regroup stop it he's a penguin or circle back in the defensive zone to ensure they have a five-man numerical advantage before crossing the blue line uh a hocus is a modern coach who is tactical calm and analytical he works well with integrating young high-skilled players into the lineup without killing their creativity that
Starting point is 01:51:16 sure sounds like a guy who could manage a younger team that needs to get younger uh he doesn't need to teach the old guys how to play they know feels like what the Leafs probably need to lean towards right I think he's a good candidate he's definitely the new toy right yeah like well so is Carl yeah but like I didn't Carl at least there's been smoke for a year like you see a hook has like I didn't see anything really until the Rangers were already very deep on this championship run um but again I think yeah sure why wouldn't you explore that for all the reasons that you just said I would look into that I like I like a guy who wants to play a little bit I mean this the way the team is built it's built into the DNA you can't really fight it that you tried the last
Starting point is 01:52:04 three years with true living to fight the the the way that they play this game and frankly I mean that see when Sheldon Keefe got fired that team did go to the seventh game of the first round and lost but spent most of that series without Nylander and Matthews and you know Keefe deserves some credit for that the Bruins were not a joke that year um and I think that if you return to a more Keefe-like style you might you might see more of what you want right I mean that was the 70 or 69 goal season for Matthews too his roster structure Jesse what do you think about a guy like that does that sound good to your ears I know very little about him like Steve I've it's been like oh they won the championship but maybe this guy so I don't know if if if he's gonna be a good
Starting point is 01:52:51 fit or not um will William Nylander listen to him that's always got to be a big question is he gonna chirp back at him in practice is this a guy who's gonna come in with the right attitude to galvanize these troops to make them win again uh you see a hocus goalie oh that's rare i'd say right uh behind the bench patrick waugh i can't think of not off the top of my head yeah i feel like goalies don't usually go into the head coach they go into goalie coaching yeah yeah because it's such a specialized position yeah you see right i have the right guy you see yeah oh it on account if it says Kitchener Rangers champions. Yeah, OK.
Starting point is 01:53:33 Yeah, goalie. Goalies are weird. Goalies are weird. Fins can be weird. This is a great combination. Gino Malkin staying with the Pens. And it's worth noting, and this is what Josh Yohi
Starting point is 01:53:43 and Chris Johnson put in their article in The Athletic. One year ago, the team and league sources confirmed to The Athletic that the Penguins president of hockey operations, Kyle Dubas, also general manager,
Starting point is 01:53:52 was not interested in bringing Malkin back to Pittsburgh. However, Malkin's resurgence last season, 19 goals, 61 points, 56 games persuaded Dubas to bring him back. so it's 5.5 guaranteed i believe it's as much as seven and a half if they were to go all the way to the stanley cup finals perfectly so here it is uh 5.5 million dollar cap hit the aav uh nine
Starting point is 01:54:12 million dollars possibly oh wow the base salary is 2.5 million dollars performance bonus 3.5 million dollars signing bonus of 3 million dollars total salary 5.5 so here are the no so a no movement claws we don't need that who cares performance bonus 250k after 42 games 250k after 63 games played 1 million dollars for making the playoffs 500k for each playoff round one that's cool so that's how you get that 5.5 up to 9 mil that's a great deal yeah dubas is known for overpaying guys like all of those stipulations are completely reasonable and if he hits all of them nobody cares no it's like he could you could go several million dollars into overage because he made nine million dollars and everybody will be talking about how the
Starting point is 01:55:03 fuck are the penguins in the finals oh my god yeah like no one will care and this will be his 21st season with the team crosby's 22nd that is unbelievable an unbelievable run together yeah every game one of the longest standing duos in all of sports yeah i i don't know if there's been a more more like a duo that's played more combined games or anything but it's amazing and i think i think that that's it's nice for the penguins because last year this time openly we were you know as they mentioned in the article um dubas didn't want to bring him back and they were pissed at each other both camps were pissed dubas was not thrilled with malik and malik not thrilled with dubas and uh we were openly talking about okay how many years are we going to be out
Starting point is 01:55:44 of the playoffs before crosby goes okay let's get traded here also with malik and what i tell you what this is how they operate this is the they they fight they kiss they make up every single time malcolm needs a deal they fight they kiss they make up this is the way it works he's gonna end his career as a penguin it was never gonna go any other way i'm sure he said well you know he's gonna play his final season in washington stop i never believed that for a hot second this is what he does this is what they do yeah that's true it happened uh with uh latang and malikin four years ago remember in montreal and it was like for the draft we're like are they gonna go the crosby's got to call brian burke and get this deal done right everyone knows a fun hot
Starting point is 01:56:34 mess couple we're one season away from the summer of kyle i don't know if you guys are aware but he set up this roster so the majority of it and i'm talking about like five guys left are all ufas by the 27 28 off season so this is the next off season the penguins are going to be completely overhauled by kyle dubas this is interesting because because uh wait the 28 off season the 27 20 so next next off season the summer into the 27 going into the yeah yeah yeah so next the 27 sorry i i worded that weirdly the 27 free agency class that off season is summer of kyle next interesting so i think it's fascinating too when you look at the uh um it's amazing the the fact is that kyle is now going to be halfway through his deal because this will be year four that he's
Starting point is 01:57:24 going into and he still really hasn't been able to enact the plan that we all thought that he wanted to enact when he got there so that might be the real start of the next phase of kyle which is i think what he wanted to do people under contract brian rust ricard raquel ben kindle chris letang ryan graves end of list jesse this that that is a whole roster wow this might be the summer of kyle we might spend all day july 1st just talking penguins extensions and trades yeah yeah honestly yeah he's got to put a team together because he doesn't have one for the 27 and 28 season that's great wow hey you know what that looks like a pretty clean sheet to me good for him yeah and especially with the cap going up he's gonna be able to do a lot of stuff i can see
Starting point is 01:58:12 him like taking on money from other teams just because they they have cap troubles and a boatload of picks yeah he's always they always got the penguins are so gonna make a trade with florida you're right they're so and vegas both of them well there's that sand is was it vilmanis he's gonna be playing full-time with florida and i just wonder who from florida is going to be the odd man out mackie samuskevich penguin is it him or is it a guy like carter verhege i wonder like do you go do you keep the younger player and i don't know if mac i don't know what mackie tops out as but so that's interesting because or is it evan rodriguez verhege and dubas were part of the organization at the same time for a minute for uh i think it was longer than that was it because
Starting point is 01:58:57 lou was the one who traded also but dubas was the agm and i and i gotta know there's got to be some sort of you know he was the one guy in the traded and want them to trade he was the one guy because remember it was five guys for michael grabner and verhege was one of them that's i don't know it's just a thought okay uh the uh the last thing i wanted to mention is get ready for some crazy salaries because the rumor is scott lawton and jason dickinson are both uh looking for somewhere in the neighborhood of five years and 5.5 million each don't look at me sideways when i tell you logan stanley's gonna ask for the zadorov deal i'm telling you i'm telling you now it's worth noting lawton's scoring picked up when he went to la because they used him properly
Starting point is 01:59:40 it returned to what it was returned to what it was um but he you know if you look at a statute it's like 20 points and uh that's significant 20 points is an option versus nothing ruby man no no just go maybe it'll work now steve you're doing the stream tonight game four cannot wait quick prediction jesse who wins tonight yeah everybody because we get to watch great hockey oh boom and the real winner john tortorella because he gets to keep being on TV and we get to have to keep looking at them. Yeah. The Steve Dangle Podcast.
