The Steve Dangle Podcast with your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wilde, and Jesse Blake.
No, Steve, you can't tell them that.
I can't tell them?
No.
Oh, I want to tell them.
Nah, you can't.
But I know this big thing.
No, I know there's rumblings, but you can't let people in on them.
Noise even.
Yeah.
Hold it back.
Definitely don't put it out there for the clicks and the views.
No.
100%.
We don't need those.
No.
We certainly don't.
Absolutely not.
Long weekend.
Jesus.
I'll be like a cop in both your ears to start.
You guys are fucking on the ball today.
Long weekend.
Long break.
listen is it a is it a brad summer is it a hot brad summer again no the last one of those ended
in disaster but i will say that so far uh they couldn't fire him he quit that's right he did
not get fired they were so mad he left they wouldn't let him join the leafs for the first
round pick on the draft floor yeah they're bummed you can't i'm never gonna forget you can check out
anytime you like,
but you can never leave the Flames.
Brad Marchand, we'll get to.
Brad Treliving, Tavares Dunn, Nyes Dunn,
according to the CJ Show,
which I listened to already this morning.
Steven Lorenz is getting worked on.
Yes, the passion.
Listen.
The passion!
I just want to say,
I'm going to start with this, okay?
Because all we heard after the second round loss
is how nobody wants to friggin' play here.
You know what Matthew Nyes likes?
Playing here.
Playing here.
According to James Myrtle,
He loves playing in Toronto, loves playing with
Austin Matthews and being a Leaf
and the attention that's on him
Tavares
takes almost half of what
Brock Nelson got
to stay
Tavares and Nyes
will cost the Leafs
combined almost
a million dollars less than they cost last
year in total contract value
It was roughly about
12-3 last year and now it'll be like 11 and a half oh my god yeah i didn't even think about
yeah so it's going to cost it's it's marginal but it's still something so tovaris oh last year was
all about everyone getting raises right i it was the number one thing that i highlighted i'm like
hey they're going in with basically the same forwards except they make so much more money
and they don't have tyler bertuzzi this actually kind of sucks so adam i assume you read the david
alter tweet is what you're referencing i think you read it backwards i read it backwards yeah
you stupid idiot you read it backwards oh so dumb ass 200 grand oh my god so david alter tweeted
over the weekend that uh john tavarez and matthew nice combined salary hit for 24 25 is 11.9 million
and this upcoming season it'll be 12.1 million damn it david why didn't you check my work so
just to correct mr adam okay well listen that's marginal an increase of 1.79 percent in total uh
total salary between the two of them and let me say this an increase of a hundred percent passion
in the fan base you know i think i think here's the deal man that's a good step toronto's gonna
get it's a good step super leaf fans are gonna get super blue and white on you in the next three
four years we are done with this bullshit about oh it's so hard to play here it's so oh it's so
hard and and to quote the guy who's leaving they're treated like gods it's not that bad
there are some elements of it that i'm sure nobody appreciates uh but i think you get that with most
jobs and here's the great thing the money's pretty cool if you're good at it and what i am seeing
with brad for living in this this first weekend guys and i just want to talk just about this
forget the marner piece okay the toronto mate beliefs are finding common ground and making
good contracts that work for the player but also don't bend the team over a barrel and for me
it makes shanny and dubas who signed the all of the previous contracts the exception being the
william neilander contract i think that was always a good deal uh except for the first season where
he missed the way it happened the way it happened sucked yeah it played he played it into a good
deal yes i would say a good bet right yeah uh totally i would say that shanee and dubas
are not looking real good right now in terms of their management of the cap and you can flat cap
me to death but the reality is it looks like um matthew nye signed for a contract hit that
even drew hated it and then he went and did research and he was like actually it's not so bad
considering you you have to adjust for inflation and that is something i'm having personally a lot
of difficulty with like a couple of the contracts signed recently that will get to nick haig and
kevin ball i'm like pardon what where on earth did those numbers come from i'm having to wrap
my head around uh new reality baby new reality it's it's difficult like uh the boldy deal and
what was it the genther deal oh that'd be good for nice okay yeah but they signed it before now
now it's now so it's more than that and and that's what he ended up signing and he got less
than wyatt johnson and he should uh why johnson's a center like why and johnson's younger but but
got a year longer than johnson did and i think that is they bought a year of ufa sure it's a big
deal big deal so i the whole thing should not just be about the comparison with shanney and
dubas but we are coming out of the shanney era yeah and i think it's a relevant thing to talk
about but but the way brad handled those two negotiations i wanted to get your thoughts on
because it seems like there isn't a leaf fan out there who's unhappy about them uh not that i've
seen really like my favorite part of it all is no mess no stress like it's it's we can head into
july 1st tomorrow and it's done already and like now they're all the way down to the depth guys
like they're working on steven lorenz oh all right awesome it's just nice not having this
hang over them uh listen we shouldn't be singing brad's praises until we find out what he's doing
in free agency is oh we got marsh and whoa for 12 mil per oh no like we gotta wait for some of
If Marshae comes to Toronto, you're just going to have to eat the number.
If he comes to Toronto, they're paying a fortune.
So pick your poison.
Do you not want him here, or do you want him here and it's too much money?
Those are your options.
Here's where I'm at.
Here's where I'm at.
Because now we're going all over.
The Tavares deal, I could kiss him on the mouth.
He should.
There were some fans who never fully embraced him because of the money.
And I understand it.
it's a lot of money and unfortunately the salary cap makes it so that you can never divorce a
player from the amount of money they make you can't do it um you know Nylander it's kind of
interesting he could do no wrong making less than seven 11.5 every shift he took off you notice you
make 11 and a half million dollars what do you mean a shift off Tavares for 4.38 his worst season
as a leaf would be worth at least that and last year he put up his second highest goal total ever
and then nize it's reasonable to assume he's only going to get better even if he stays here 29 and
29 roughly 30 30 for for the duration of this deal while being a power playing penalty killing
freight train stay yeah absolutely those are those are unicorns those are rare those are hard to find
jesse yeah we haven't actually haven't had a chance to talk about the jt deals no we've done
a last show it feels like we did a little bit on our stream yeah but that's not this show right so
i feel like there's been a million things that have happened in between now and then so yeah
looking at the deal and just seeing how everything's played out it's one of the best deals
like in the history of the toronto maple leafs considering a salary cap exists it's post 0405
and before that it didn't really matter what the money was so you could divorce these players from
the salary cap and seeing a guy who almost had 40 goals take a contract that's 4.38 million with the
on the AAV because of the deferred money it's incredible value that I don't think there's no
way you can bend this to be upset with it if you look at the top 17 scorers from last season
none of them make under uh seven million dollars if you just go by goal score just goals top 17
none of them make under seven million dollars and you're getting a guy who had 38 and right in the
top 10 or 12th actually in the league last year and you're getting him for so little money and
it speaks to me that the leafs use the leverage of being the toronto maple leafs for the one time
in their history of their franchise you know adam you mentioned shannon dubas they never did it
there's so much money to be made off the ice for being a toronto maple leaf for the entirety of
your life it's cool to see that they obviously use that as leverage against jt and you have a
player who's an ex-captain who recognizes that who recognizes i'm more important as a leaf for
the rest of my life than i am going somewhere and getting an extra couple million dollars per year
and i might as well make 7.75 for the duration of my years where it's difficult to make money
it's difficult to make money as an rfa right so i can take this sweet ass deal let them buy
one year well that's that's matthew nye's yeah he's i'm talking about john sorry we're sort of
packaging the two i but sorry all that to say like with tavaris you know people not being able
to divorce the the money from their performance like you score 47 goals it's like yeah you make
11 million you should uh he should be honest to goodness one of the most popular release
uh this up this upcoming season you've been begging for hometown talent he is one you've
been begging for guys to take a discount he very aggressively is i've been begging for the leafs to
use their financial might and you know bend the rules a little and by bend the rules i mean
uh sign guys to deals that will be illegal next year but they're not now sign them to deferred
money the Leafs have two of those now with McCabe and Tavares so they're saving I don't even know
how much money per season a few hundred grand which you know it makes a difference um I'm aware
of the team that I cheer for I know and I know they have a Mitch Marner sized hole to fill
these two deals help you fill that hole the Tavares contract it fits so many of the Leafs
narratives that were unhappy about coming out of the playoffs like for this guy to take the less
money there's like an avenue now for him to have his rafter in the jersey or jersey in the rafter
instead of backwards i like the rafter in the jerseys you could probably do that if he really
finagled it um like engineering students he's anyone he's he's ex-captain he's gonna be forever
there's plenty of guys up there who hasn't won anything but the importance that he can be now
to a fan base that's getting increasingly angry with this team it can be a complete three six or
180 with the with the fan base where now they love this man for wanting to be a leaf he's changing
the narrative what the least want to do with this franchise he's helping do it by taking this
contract it's cool to see i i want to say i got a cool comparable for you guys in a second here
we're gonna go leafs nerd for you but before we do that i want to say that jesse i think you
absolutely nailed it and one of the things i've been sort of talking about bringing up is can the
leafs be likable again and you know for a while there the unlikable leaf was william newlander
because uh for whatever reason the media really got on him before covet about whatever and they're
like he's gonna get traded he's gonna get traded he's gonna get traded they're gonna trade him
they need to trade him he's gonna get traded never got traded never listened to any of the
bullshit and slowly because of the way and and i'll just say it and and they probably wouldn't
be thrilled to hear this but who cares the way that the Marner camp handled their own PR um like
idiots yeah it was not it was not a well thought out strategy and it didn't work out well for them
like petulant spoiled breath so it went from Nylander being sort of the the guy that people
beat on to Marner being the guy that people beat on uh and you know Matthews got criticism
but it was you know compared to those two guys I don't think he got a lot and then Tavares I
always felt like there was there was a narrative out there after that montreal series where he got
need in the head and came back and was a little sluggish the next season that he was washed i
never subscribed to that and after it's great almost 30 goals yeah it's so crazy that um that
the season after that was a great like 2022 was a great season for john it was a head injury i'm
not sure if he had a neck injury as well and a knee injury yeah all of that he was recovering
from yeah and and so while he's washed now but you you go and he goes scores 38 goals last year
i think i think what toronto maple leaf fans want to know is that you want to be here and that you
would die for this team the way we would if we could be on the ice and matthew nize loves the
attention love him john tavaris maybe he doesn't love the attention i don't know if he doesn't
i don't think he even notices it i don't john does not register yeah for that he loves i don't
think he's aware of it yeah he's like no i got i got kombucha to drink man like i got stuff to do
and he's got three kids and like who gives a shit what's happening on social media when you got kids
um one comparable i want to give you john tavaris was 34 years old and going into ufa
when he signed this contract there was another guy who was 34 signed with the leafs on a five-year
contract and signed for roughly the same amount of money about 15 years ago actually almost closer
to 20 and his name is jason blake jason blake was coming off a 40 goal season with the islanders
he signed a five-year contract worth 20 million bucks the cap percentage at that time was roughly
eight percent of the cap about seven and a half to eight percent it was a huge deal it was a huge
deal john had 30 is coming off 38 goals is 34 will be 35 when the season starts
almost like i said almost 40 goals and signs for four now and it just goes to show
like the cap back then was like 50 million dollars so to give jason blake that amount of money who
by the way by all you know he had health issues and cancer and that sort of thing jason blake was
a good guy who took who unfortunately ran into a tough time in toronto he had 15 goals his first
year wasn't great he had a tough first year and if you go and look at the rest of his time he
actually wasn't bad yeah he was pretty good yeah uh but the leaf fans had already moved on it was
just it was a grumpy time to be a leaf fan and they were severely mismanaged my point is that
that was 2007 2008 that's the first season of lfr we're 25 26 here right yeah going into
and tavaris just signed for that i want you as a leaf fan to understand how monumental that is
that is huge that is a big deal and even if you do the like right now comparison
brock nelson who is 33 years old had like almost half of the amount of points that
yeah and he signed for 7.5 million dollars he makes like half a million more than trent frederick
and like matt duchesne who has money coming from the nashville predators and doesn't need any kind
of money took more than john tavarez at 4.5 now it's 4.5 for jt2 but the deferred money makes it
4.38 right there's nothing like that in matt duchesne's contract so the con the thing that
matters the salary cap hit is more and these guys who had worse seasons are i think worse players
than jt took so much more money now if you want to be a cynic about it he's made over 100 mil
like he's fine sure whatever that that's never the case whatever why wouldn't you like hey listen man
you always want to get your market value in some way you want to feel like your work is
you know what's better than not money money yeah exactly i don't know whatever he recognizes i'm
to make back whatever it is that i'm losing on this contract by being a toronto maple leaf yeah
he's gonna do it for the rest of his life it's awesome and home is home yeah that matters to
listen i i don't know what's happened in in anybody's life we all have a story some of us
really really like home i love home i can't imagine ever living outside of the gta i just
camp do you mean ajax age no you're not you're not moving another another part of the side of
the gta since you were like 24 man yeah you're picking you mean the east end of the gta you
don't think osh was the gta i'm gonna beat you up how dare you the go train line is clearly the gta
so that goes all the way to falls is gta no that's a good point
On the weekends, you can take the
GoTrain out to the falls.
Oshawa is wholeheartedly... So is Barry GTA?
Because I don't think they think he's GTA.
They're not.
Barry's definitely
not the GTA, and there's a GoTrain line out there.
Hmm.
This is an interesting conversation.
We've probably updated something you've thought
like 20 years ago, and now you're thinking
about it again. I could never leave the GTA, except
for when I did half my life ago. I didn't know
Oshawa is 1000%
the GTA. I don't know.
million i'd like to hear from people from off oshawa if they consider themselves the gta well
okay you're gonna get the old ones who are like how dare you this is its own metropolis
and then you're gonna get the reasonable people who are like what are you talking about absolutely
not i don't even think you can consider hamilton the gta because when you're talking about hamilton
they add the h you know farther and bigger yeah hamilton is his own thing so there's a
a new saying out there called gth a yeah that's what i'm talking about yeah that i still think
that term's a bit of a reach no because i think hamilton is such its own thing that they add the
h greater toronto hamilton area yeah it's a just say burlington yeah well then you're then you're
not saying hamilton what hamilton needs it to be about him talking about what like if you're
saying greater toronto hamilton area yeah you're talking about the space between toronto and
hamilton just say burlington i don't i don't get it what do you mean you don't get it adam
i don't think you're wrong but it's it's hamilton is the major city center which is why if you're
talking about the greater toronto like hamilton area you're not talking about toronto yeah but
we're adding hamilton to the gta by adding the h oh yeah i'm misunderstanding what that means
you don't yeah yeah i get it now anyway why don't you simply call it something else that it isn't
i didn't know i didn't understand at all i get it now this is fun i like this some people great
deal jt some people like home he's home and he's gonna stay home some people want to escape home
they don't want to be anywhere near home some people leave home and it's something that they
wanted and they discovered they miss home some people stay home and it ends up being a terrible
idea we all have our journeys i think john tavaris is getting exactly what he and his family want
and they're going to stay home i i i want to i want to also mention you know when steven
lorenz signed here after winning his his championship with florida uh although he
was a pto he turned down real money elsewhere to be here and brad said to him uh listen
make the team we'll figure it out and i think the same sort of situation happened with max
patch ready like come here we're gonna figure it out you're ready and um zach astin reese like the
leafs well but zach astin reese is a while ago that's a while yeah but who cares but it's it's
valid because there's evidence that the leafs will do this with a player and make good on it right
i'm just talking just let me talk about the stephen lorenz i'm talking about the passion
steve go for it i don't know if zach astin reese has the passion i think he was just a guy that
dubas wanted to fill a warm body passion i don't know what steven lorenz was like i love toronto
i love the leafs i want to be here i'm going to turn down a guaranteed contract to be here
no bad and and so you know with them working on whatever deal it is and i think he signed like
league men and he probably gets maybe gets a 1 million dollar or 1.1 i don't know what he gets
it doesn't really matter um that sort of attitude we talk about a dna change i think as i started
this guys the leaf leaf nation needs to be a little bit more rah rah leafs and f everybody
else and you know what where else i've noticed it there's clearly been a big change at mlse at the
top as we know uh from how they handle their social media it looks completely the toronto
maple leaf social media in the last two weeks has gone from a robot to admin making jokes and that's
that is the admin that's that's direction coming yeah it's not the admin is boring it's the yeah
it's brendan shanahan didn't want to make any waves on social media you weren't allowed to do
anything fun everything had to be serious you're the leafs you cannot not make waves like please
embrace that and stop pretending and they were not pretending you're anything different they
were making jokes about oh here's our war room for the first round of the draft knowing full well
they don't have a pick and like hilarious stuff and it's like how about we make this brand likable
again and where where i i'm i'm very excited to see what keith pelly does not only are these guys
signing for good contracts i think the players win and the team wins in these contracts but
they're signing guys back who want to be here who are dying to be here and they're going to stock
the roster with a bunch of those guys and listen you know we've had so many people walk through
here and go oh they're gonna trade willie oh and you remember that brian burke quote from five
years ago which was just brian chum in the water total bullshit quote about he's gonna leave for
arizona no he's not matthews yeah just yeah sorry i should have said matthews total total bullshit
quote he pulled out of his ass and i would say that to him but i also know at that time his job
was to be i wouldn't have said really 20 years ago a really good yeah i'd say to him now uh
really good on-air personality which brian burke always was he was great fantastic on the air and
that stuck with people until that contract got extended and i think austin also loves being here
he loves the spotlight wants to be in it and so when i when i look at this group now and we will
move to mitch marner here because we buried the lead on purpose this is a guy in mitch where it's
become pretty clear even jonah siegel's like openly writing it in his articles for 18 months
this guy hasn't wanted to be here and and it's it's it's okay because breakups happen um but get
on with it but get on with it like yeah and and so what are we doing because you know so many people
blame the agent and darren ferris has a job to do but i look at the way his other client reputation
no i look at the way just i look at the way sam bennett got done quietly easily there was a little
bit of talk out there that he could get 10 million if he hit the open market seeing what besser got
you could see how maybe that might be true i don't know if it would have been a full 10 but
it would have been significant the panthers bent they wanted to give him for haggie's deal he ended
of getting a million dollars more um but it was quiet it was done quietly besser hasn't signed
anywhere not besser bennett oh bennett with florida bennett that's the same agent right
besser is not the same agent right if you heard a loud whirring sound it was me trying to figure
out the besser deal oh okay yeah no i think you accidentally said better oh i meant bennett oh
sorry that's why i got confused so that confused everything he's a free agent so i was when you
look at how sorry darren ferris handled the bennett thing yes there we go there we go
relatively quiet i'm sorry i said bester because they were talking about best around the cj show
right as i uh because it was talking about winnipeg and are you listening to the cj show
right no i was listening to it before the show okay all right anyway my point is that it's pretty
clear this whole notion about we're gonna wait till july july 15th well and we'll get into the
tampering thing in a second uh well that's probably not gonna happen now we're gonna sign a short-term
deal uh to maximize dollars well that might not even happen now and the fact is mitch might go to
vegas and by the end of the show by the end of the show you know and hold on and hold on and not
make 12 million oh i know because apparently what's happened as of this morning is they're
going to go longer vegas doesn't want to pay him 12 but they want to give him the money that he
wants so they might go longer term to bring the aav down and this is where remember i started the
whole show with shanee and dubas if mitch signs in vegas for less than 12 million bucks it doesn't
matter how many years those two dubas and shanee are going to have egg on their face forever over
this and i i know that people get annoyed when i bring it up but i think it's extraordinarily
relevant because they built this yes they built this you can't talk about how things ended up
without talking about the years that it took to get to this conclusion 100 and i know there's a
lot of dubas fans still out there i'm not totally sure why the church of dubas still has so many
subscriptions uh i think he's just a smart guy i don't think he's the boy genius we were sold
i i think that's a fair i think that's a fair comment based on the results yeah
sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where
task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things
one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean

vegas stuff even though mitch isn't there yet he wants to go to dallas he can't go to dallas
ranting is there i can tell you he wants to go to la the high tax state listen based on what i'm
hearing about these numbers at least some people in his camp already feel slighted the seed has
been planted good luck really of course interesting i've heard that adam everything
every fucking thing was an issue yeah but but steve this every gosh but but steve
thing was an issue this time it's his choice to sign it they got nobody to blame but themselves
i'm not sure he's ever made a choice okay well but this is and this is the difference right
you look at oh well he's not going to sign till mid-july or he's going to do this and
he's going to do that the reality is that sam bennett same agent handled quietly quickly deal
done mitch marner same agent loudly slowly as painfully and drawn out as possible it's it's the
it is it is and they it's the prince harry south park episode we want privacy
and by the way buy my new book yeah i think what darren ferris should do is hire a part-time
pr person uh on this one and i don't blame darren he acts at the behest of the client
why would you hire help when you yourself are so fucking smart the thing you can't get away from
with with mitch and i think it's a great point is that like everything he's done here has been
avoidable and the divorce with toronto the way it's been dragged out for the couple months now
couple years yes well a couple years yeah to be honest but like since the playoffs ended and now
there could have been a thank you toronto uh post from him a a well he has in the media he hasn't
left yet he hasn't left but he can declare i'm going to july 1st and i'm done because he is and
he knows that and he wants to move on and the whole thing that's going on here is entirely
avoidable i think you lose leverage maybe if you do that no because there's 20 there's 31 other
teams you don't lose anything because he knows he's done and it could have been a nice clean
divorce this all could have been avoided but this every time he does something there always has to
be the most amount of drama around well and it goes back to jesse like nick kiprios god bless
him i'm a big fan of him personally i i'd love to talk to him directly about this but the toronto
star article about how the leafs undervalued mitch uh a couple of weeks ago and i and i just
question how like they paid him top market value the entire time he's gonna go sign in vegas for
maybe seven or eight hundred grand more per season and i i'm just and i get that there's a tax
situation just but i don't see the leafs sent him sent him out there every pp1 for most of the
power play he got all the pk time and he deserved it he was spectacular he got hey him and austin
wanted to play together oh the coach wants to experiment no you can't because mitch and austin
want this and i'm sorry even sorry brube keith uh babcock actually kept them separate um we've
been justifying this for i'm just trying to i'm trying to figure out here like i i don't know
that the leafs could have done anymore and what i'm i am interested in and i will say this if
this vegas deal happens guys one thing i do know about vegas and we have an agent who has had
some experiences with vegas's management when they don't want a player anymore and that led
to one of the most infamous moments in nhl history with the deborah sword through the back of mark
andre flurry which you know alan doesn't like to bring up but it happens it did happen ferris is
not the only agent i criticize you might remember i i criticized alan i criticized alan heavily for
multiple shows and you're like let's do a show with him i'm like you're a stupid idiot and it
ended up being one of the smartest decisions we've ever made he thinks he thought it was funny
the great thing with owning a company with adam is if he makes a great decision i also did well
of course we all do um but we we we look at that and we go okay so okay let's let's play this out
let's game play this out you go you go play in vegas okay vegas last year had not a great second
round no i do think marner makes them better but what i will say is you go there and you do this
and by the way for all the people that are saying oh well there's rumors that petrangelo might he's
not coming back this year yeah especially with the it's not happening uh and they'll be better
without alex petrangelo well no they'll be they will be able to bring him back for the playoffs
though if he can play in the playoffs he might be done forever yeah i think he's probably done
forever but they there is that option that still that loophole exists for another year 25 i don't
think forever but i i don't think we're seeing him this season mitch marner going in there has
got to understand that maybe the media pressure is different maybe the fan pressure is different
but the organizational pressure is much higher. When Toronto failed, Toronto made zero effort
to hold people accountable. And sometimes the way you hold people accountable is you trade them.
We didn't do that. We said, you know what? Nope. That's an app. Oh, they didn't do well there.
Well, that that's, well, there was a whole bunch of other things. Oh, well, they didn't do well
in that series. Well, there was just a whole bunch of other things. Well, they didn't do that in that
that serious. Well, I mean, I see your point, but like what happens if, I mean, we might even get
worse. They didn't allow for the possibility that making a change might make them better.
Now the change is being forced on them. And I just hope the martyr camp understands that
you go to Vegas and you don't perform. They move on. The expectations from management are
championship or bust. How many times have we seen it? And by the way, Dallas is the same.
they just fired their head coach who took them to what two or three straight conference finals i
think three and listen it was time for deborah to go but the leafs would have looked at that and
been like shit built me a statue we go to the conference final build me where's my statue
there is still a big pocket of the fan base that's like well we went to game seven against
the cup champs guys holy shit just got a television huh you haven't had one since
2017 yeah like oh my god there's no way we're still having this conversation like like it's
impossible imagine this the the statues that would have been built for gilmore and clark and those
guys if they'd gone to three straight eastern there are tax paying voters who are like yeah
but they were close again holy shit how did you get yourself worked up about that you you presented
these people, and then you got yourself
worked up.
You asking that question is on you.
How did I get worked up
to the
same thing that you yourself
proposed?
How did I get worked up?
Jesse. I just think. Jesse. Toronto.
I'm going to make another coffee. You've never
known anything else. Toronto
has
its drawbacks, but it also has
in men's positives and i'll tell you this vegas are ruthless and so you know ask the guys who
have been booted out there on so unceremoniously after great seasons after great seasons but they
didn't get it done in the playoffs and i just think they are i hope they're aware of that is
my point now when it comes to the tampering guys uh we got word of this before it broke publicly
and i was to be honest very surprised that frege went public with it uh i think that was a uh uh
i think that was a calculated risk on his part frege is pretty uh pretty conservative i think
he knows what he's doing yeah i'm not questioning it i was just like holy shit he's going with this
okay well and he is torpedoing a source like a million oh my god if you were mitch marner's
camp would you ever talk to him again well i don't know that mitch marner's camp would have
known that they may not have known oh they probably would have actually because here's the thing well
tampering with who yeah the the interesting thing is the the the vegas could be fined up to a couple
like first rounders five million bucks but the player and the agent could be fined too player
could be like a million bucks agent could be decertified yes that's how serious this is lose
their ability to be an nhlpa yeah so i think it's understandable why the other side of it who
is in content the constant contact with that agent probably wouldn't have gone with the story and
that's why i think uh elliot freeman knows what he's doing there you go oh i there you go i'm not
doubting him i'm just surprised i think we know where a lot of the mitch marner things come out
with and i don't think the other side might be willing to burn that i see contact there i see
jesse always thinking ahead thousand foot view uh now the thing about it is that martyr to vegas
does in a lot of ways make a lot of sense hockey wise like i can see vegas's mo as they're in on
every big free agent who can blame them first class organization great place to live tax-free
state it's a nice dry heat too it gets cool in the in the in the evening so you can actually
enjoy it not every uh not every evening it's 100 at midnight when i got there and and so now it's
come to you know the initial thing was well toronto and vegas are going to work out something
if mitch wants to sign there because um that's the sign and trade that kiprios was putting out
there that i was like there's no friggin way that's happening because he mentioned like hurdle
and i was like and he was on the sign in trade before everybody was i gotta give credit mentioning
william carlson and tom he called it but with the wrong players yeah when we'll see how it all
shakes out like we don't know maybe those players will be in it he could be right but he was on the
sign and trade before everybody and i didn't believe a sign and trade was possible it's going
to happen and kiprios threw it down it's like that's ridiculous and then now this weekend we
got hey sign and trades really possible yeah now the names that we heard this weekend where vegas
said okay well we'll give you nicholas waugh or we'll give you nicholas hag you can which nicolai
would you like and uh the leaf said we'll take both please and that apparently this is again
this is big balls brad over here uh going i'm gonna i'm on a roll so hopefully it was to flip
haig now because that contract is cuckoo bananas but what i think has is really reinforced that
this is a real possibility is the fact that nick haig was dealt last night to the predators and
then he signed an extension but colton sissons is now a vegas golden knight and colton sissons
by the way i just want to say the predators have no centerman and they traded colton sissons
and so colton sissons is going to come in likely replace nick waugh or nick roy i'm gonna call him
nick roy uh it's nicholas waugh um and he is not only the replacement but he's half retained
the preds retained on they did yes 50 of his salary this happened right before i got in the
car what yes and so so they are there's the because i think sissons is making like four
something i think uh i can look it up he is yeah no i think i'm telling you it's a crazy deal it's
a crazy contract i cannot even believe it's happening he's one of those guys like on the
all-time he's making he's only making two eight uh so yeah he's making two eight so then on the
retained it's only like one point something it's one point four two eight which gives them the
center they need to replace wah yeah and gives them a little cap flexibility for the marner deal
when it yeah and in that deal too is jeremy lozon who's going to replace uh haig on the back that's
yeah man barry trotz is he's the worst worst gm in the world call him every day he's so bad
call him every day he's a madman but um complete madman nick waugh as a fit in toronto i just want
to quickly touch on guys because he's not even here people are calling no no i know but people
are calling this that's funny extortion which is hilarious or blackmail or blackmail it's it's
call it this is this is how the nhl does business the nhl is itching to make an example of somebody
we know this but we also know you sent out a memo last week about tampering but we also know that
the nhl would prefer that this not be a scandal especially with two of its major teams and so if
they're able to do business listen if you think the nhl is run fairly i got news for you it ain't
Oh, and so so for anybody that's like, well, you know, the Leafs should get compensation and they should and the NHL should negotiate.
They're not or should investigate. They're not going to do that.
But the allegations are out there.
If Vegas signs Marner, that these not only these allegations from now that they date back to last year and before.
When Mitch Marner basically refused to engage the Leafs, there was a thought that Vegas and them were already sort of talking.
And that's that's a Frank Cervale report from this morning.
This conversation goes back months and like a year or more.
Because last August, Vegas tried to trade for Mitch Marner and that that didn't go through and didn't work.
And then again, at the trade deadline, there was a three way deal with Carolina and Vegas and Toronto.
that one fell through again so there's been a lot of vegas marner smoke last year or the truth
last year theodore toronto want to shape theodore as they rightly should vegas said no uh at the
trade deadline it was more because that was the august deal yeah at the trade deadline was more
because marner's wife is pregnant and i will never blame him for this nope i totally agree
the and also it doesn't sound like it was his fault and vegas couldn't satisfy the uh picks
and players that Carolina wanted in the deal as well.
So the deal wasn't fully flushed out.
It was a chat.
Yeah, it was a chat.
Can we do this?
Oh, we can't?
Yeah, it never got to the point where like,
okay, let's sign some stuff.
So Marner to Vegas from a hockey perspective,
I got to say, for Vegas fans, I really like.
I love the idea of Carlson Marner or Eichel Marner.
Eichel Marner Stone.
Like what an insane, insane top pick.
Stone's a right winger though.
i think yeah but i think they'd figure it out no or or do you i do a barbachev i i would prefer
to put him uh marner with carlson actually yep which might sound weird but uh but what
dora fay have like what do you what do you what do you move him down i guess we play him with
hurdle riley smith's also not that great anymore no he's not um you can definitely move him down
you have insane depth you can move him anywhere no i i would prefer marner carlson because for
the vast majority of his career he's at a left-handed center oh it's been matthews it's
been tavaris the only right-handed center he's ever played with his bozak right and that was
ages ago well and you steve mentioned at the end of the season how long do you think vegas is going
to hold in there with mark stone i thought i thought he was the one to go and you might be
right because even if they do this season with him he's on year seven of eight so he's got two
years left today i don't remember if it was cj or fridge they were talking about the the golden
knights are still in on anderson rasmus anderson stone would have to go i'm like what how eventually
how so i look at this and i go okay so he's marner is i think in a lot of ways a better version of
what mark stone gave you at his peak he's not the takeaway god that mark stone was in the neutral
zone different players different but no no but not marner's a higher score and he's incredible
on defense mark stone's a brick shithouse okay is but you're and mark stone is a vastly superior
playoff performer agreed vastly but i think that i think that vegas is betting on the fact that
mitch marner can be better in the playoff system than in toronto oh maybe maybe he can maybe maybe
he goes he wins his cup i'm not being and we have to eat it like the sabers do right like it's
entirely possible maybe i think my thing is that vegas is fascinating because mark stone uh would
probably be on their roster next year but he'll be gone like he'll be gone after that like that
this if if marner's in vegas uh goodbye mark i mean you're you got you don't think he plays out
the two years i don't think so a lot of their ltir shenanigans that we've all complained about
has been them managing not just mark stone injuries but surgeries like there's i don't
think he's gonna have one of those 1500 game careers there fellas like i i think clock's
ticking there where do you guys stand on the just the tampering stuff do you think it actually
happens i think it happens all the time no do you think that like they get charged with tampering
because i don't think it's going to actually happen getting charged would be surprising to
me just because it happens all the time and you would just because it happens all the time doesn't
mean the nhl isn't going to make an example of vegas maybe it happens all the time and they're
finally putting their foot down and putting a stop to it all um maybe vegas didn't do it at all
um but listen you're not gonna highly highly doubt that you're you're adam this is gonna be
maybe my least favorite take i've ever said to you people calling what the leafs are doing to
vegas allegedly doing to vegas blackmail yeah no it's called leverage that's blackmail
no it's not blackmail there are times where leverage is black do this or i do this that's
blackmail do this or i say this and you get punished for it that is blackmail but if i'm
vegas i'll take that risk because it's very unlikely that the nhl wants to find negative
like imagine that becomes a story this summer and you've got the hockey cat you don't want this it
has the potential to be it could be a major scandal the nhl scandal of this it sounds like
there isn't enough evidence for on toronto side to prove that vegas tampered in terms of like a
paper trail i haven't heard that's what that's what people keep saying there isn't a paper trail
the league would have to investigate and they would be like turn over your phone maybe they
could find it i don't know how far they can go with that kind of stuff but ask colin campbell
about subpoenaing emails yeah but that's that's under like the law right this is under nhl rules
i don't know how much uh emails and texts are in the nhl rulebook cba and what gary batman can do
but it sounds like right now nobody has a paper trail on their table well hold on though the nhl
has this way of operating where maybe they don't punish you like immediately but they'll get you
back oh like they they have a thing where they the nhl has like remember the chris jericho like
the list the nhl has the list and maybe they don't get you on this but the next time you need a favor
from head office go fly a kite and maybe for the next 10 years oh man it's so crazy how is vegas
the most penalized team in the league this year uh there are ways man there are ways that's the
way this this league works there are ways and i'm i'm i'm saying it's it's now that it's out there
It really doesn't matter what the ultimate outcome is from a do they get fined or don't they?
What matters is that it's out there and that the NHL, by doing nothing, unless they allow some sort of trade to go through here and then it all goes away and everybody go.
If the Leafs make that accusation publicly, whether or not it's investigated, whether or not Vegas is directly fined, draft picks or whatever, this is bad.
Elliott putting that out there is so ballsy.
Yeah, it's so ballsy.
Like, how many insiders, like, on the Mount Rushmore of hockey insiders, he's on it, and you're to plant your flag with this story, what balls?
Like, I take it from me, guy who doesn't know how to do this shit, he must have 40 kablillion sources, and the audacity to come out with that, man, good for him.
like this this is what we're asking for as fans yeah 100 well and but boys if elliot's saying that
okay and we're talking about hey and by the way he was not the only one who knew there was a lot
of people who knew who just didn't we're like yeah maybe not going public with that one i wonder you
gotta be sure i want you gotta be sure i wonder he must have jesse like if they're saying that to
him they must have a paper trail we don't know yet i don't know you can't because that's like
if i'm elliot i need to see the paper trail right before i go with that elliot did not make an
accusation no he's saying it's being whisper whispered about throughout the league but it's
so serious steve how many gms have an axe to grind with vegas and how many gms have an axe to grind
imagine the outrage from ottawa if this if this scandal goes through and vegas gets nothing no one
should be more upset about this than ottawa because it's vegas it is no no no no ottawa
not owning their own actions though yeah like oh i'm not saying you're correct i'm just saying a
gm who made a moronic decision yes who didn't check his shit and is no longer going to be a
gm in the nhl probably ever again they're gonna put it on the sign when you enter the city welcome
to ottawa we lost a first round pick and we don't want to give it up it is i'm sorry to say this
fans i know you feel like you were done wrong you were done wrong by pierre dorian you were
adam that's sports that all of sports is uh you get punished for something and you're like but
what about and the sins got punished for something and they're going but what about vegas doing this
and and they should wait but own the punishment own the punishment so but also then hold others
accountable here is here is what is happening though the the rumor is that the leafs are going
you tampered we're gonna say that you tampered and you're gonna get dinged for tampering unless
you trade us a good roster player and if you do that then it all goes away first of all
mafioso as hell second of all if i'm ottawa i'm like wait a sec vegas did something wrong
they're going to avoid punishment and the team that gets the benefit from it is a divisional
rival who beat us in the first round fuck everything about all of this to add to your
narrative the vegas golden knights are also the other end of ottawa losing that first round
they're the one who called the league and was like this isn't our fault ottawa's fucking idiots go
find them yeah that's what happened and they were right and they were right when they did that
but people don't forget also let me just throw this out there uh this is where gary betman
and michael and lauer's relationship will be tested because if they raise a stink remember
that michael and lauer openly chided gary betman on a microphone he should shut up gary doesn't
need michael's money anymore he's already got it so so so gary's thing is uh uh this is where gary
also goes yeah but you made fun of me on a press conference you made me look bad i'm not gonna help
yap away buddy i think it would help michael and lauer's case if he shut his mouth like he
shut it he should listen i don't blame him for saying what he said i don't either fucking awesome
but i also know that that shit comes back to you like how many how many press conferences do we
come on here and be like oh jeremy jacobs spoke today after uh end of season lockout it's like
michael and lauer doesn't need to be talking in the media agreed he's always out there talking
in the media he's put he's doing this to himself when have you ever heard larry tannenbaum or ed
rogers in front of a microphone like it never i don't think i know larry tannenbaum's voice i saw
larry tannenbaum host the larry o'brien trophy that was the last time i saw larry tannenbaum
yep yep jess you're right like why is michael anlauer out here just digging his own grave
by poking the giant bear that's gb and and listen i love the fact that he clicks his heels together
on the golf course and i do i really do i like this man a lot if i was a sense fan i would go
to war for michael anlauer so like however that's not politically what works in the nba yeah you i
feel bad for Sens fans about this first
round pick but some of this you did
to yourself if you could just sit
there and be quiet for a couple years
and never say anything Mr. Ann Lauer
maybe you would have got that pick back
I still think he might yeah
there's still a chance that he might because the NHL does
like to do it was one guy's fault it was
Pierre Dorian and paid for it with his job
yeah but unfortunately the
punishment extended beyond
him and dinged the Sens and that's
what their beef was but like
alright you said what you were upset about
if you talk about it again which oh is there is there news oh there isn't perhaps shut the
fuck up because i heard you the first time yes right the nhl and all of this was their scheming
liars for not telling him that this was going to go down when he was purchasing this team like they
are the origin of the bad people let's let's not get that twisted your beef being legitimate has
nothing to do with it exactly but after that you got to know how to play the game with gary and
that was be nice and play the game and just be quiet and he will reward you for that and by the
way he didn't play the game unfortunately i think it's amazing because technically michael anlauer
is gary's boss but gary is so smart gary's so smart because he's like you know i know i got 32
bosses but i really have 10 bosses he's got eight bosses yeah hey i pay your salary i pay your
salary i don't think it really that sounds like a taxpayer telling the police
where they they always say in in corporate settings you got to be able to manage up
gary manages up unlike anyone i've ever seen he got michael and lauer whose final final offer was
for the sense was 800 million he said just give me an extra 100 million so he got michael and
lauer to say yeah here's an extra 100 mil and then goes by the way we're taking a first round
And also fart.
Yeah.
Isn't that fucking crazy?
It's the most Gary thing I've ever heard.

Now, Nicola Waugh or Nicholas Waugh.
Julian called him Nicola Waugh, so I'm assuming that he is.
Nicholas Waugh is, if he is headed to Toronto, this is a 15-16 goal scoring guy.
Has some flash tough?
what do we if he is in Toronto I think it's worth mentioning because tomorrow we got free agency
which is going to be bonkers so we're not going to have a lot of chances to talk about it in the
same way tell me now what the Leafs might be getting in a guy like that we just you know we
just spent last week talking about Scott Lawton and how he needs to be the third line guy um you
know does this guy fill that role does he fill a fourth line role is he a winger with Lawton and
they're trading off center like what do they do you feel so many needs you don't have to play him
at center you probably should but you don't have to you have that option vegas doesn't play him at
center yeah well there you go so scott lawton you don't have to play him at center but you can
scott lawton the left-handed shot nicola wah the right-handed shot the leafs haven't had a steady
right-handed shot center while a while is cadre even a lefty the fact no no yeah cadre's a lefty
i'm trying to think of kerfoot well that's not steady yeah you're right like honest like it was
like michael amadio might be yeah and then he ended up going to uh they waved him and he went
to vegas and won a cup and even vegas i don't think plays him at center very often it's been
it bozak i'm trying to think if there's been any since bozak all that to say they haven't had
someone do that for a long time um so it gives you another option for handed handedness he can
play center he can play wing he's big he's mean i've really enjoyed watching him in the playoffs
uh over the years he was so good during their 2023 run at three million bucks and a year left
after this one yes give me give me now the only thing i'll say and it's it's not a crisis it's
just you know something that you need to look out for there is zero need for david camp on your
hockey team anymore well they're trying to move them anyway him and cali yeah yeah like in like
yarn croak you know you could still use him could take or leave you could use him he can play either
wing camp is a center a center and a center and one that you thoroughly because of lawton and
wah now you don't need maybe well maybe well yeah because he's not even a leaf yet and the thing
about why he does uh conf scores like next to nothing there you can expect a goal or two he
scores like a bang and crash depth guy good great i mean you're not getting him for his offense but
the occasional goal would be nice the dna change i think he had four goals in the playoffs for his
run which is pretty good by leaf standards pretty sure i'll look it up here uh playoffs oh two goals
excuse me sorry uh that's a lot different than four goals but it's still um he did get four
goals for the vegas gold knights in the 2020 2021 run uh but uh this is a guy who um fits
the change in dna that i feel like we're starting to see with brad he brad changed a couple of
things last year right away so the first year he was kind of brought in late and it was sort of
like you know arrested development on that janky yeah uh last year was his first real summer as
coming in as the gm and knowing what the team's needs were blah blah hey the i he can't get away
with i just got here at that point right gets wall locked up which by the way i was so wrong
about that deal that deal is looking real good these days contracts nuts uh anthony stallers
for two years so we got another that contracts nuts he goes gets tanev oel re-signs mccabe by
the way kevin ball and nick hagg are making more than jake mccabe dude the leafs going into the
summer with a full decor locked up is looking better and better and all of these some of these
numbers are not 3.25 million for three more years dude come on i don't know if it's a great deal
it's not a it's not a terrible one i because at the end of the day he's still a second he's still
a third pair guy i mean only because they play him there you shouldn't be in your top four you
don't think so no i think he's better than that uh he can he did in a pinch all the way to all the
way to the finals with florida oh no he was fourth he was third pair wasn't yes okay fine fine knock
it off i'm a big oe all guy all right you knock it that's okay he's not terrible my point is
the de-emphasis on the core which ryan o'reilly said bradger living said uh seems to start with
the third and fourth line which they got outside of uh domey and patch ready next to nothing out
of in the playoffs and so if you add wada that group and i'm assuming it'll be probably between
toronto and detroit for patch already because his family's in michigan he did like it here the
leafs do want him back but you know that's a i think a later decision lorenz in that group right
um who else like this this i guess well he's not in the top 12 though
no way played in the top six he shouldn't no he definitely shouldn't you're right the my my point
is that I feel like we're starting to see
a little bit of the character come in.
Lawton is a high-character guy,
beloved by teammates,
had a really couple of great runs with Philadelphia
in the playoffs when they used to make those.
I liked him in the playoffs this year.
I know he didn't score a lot.
I liked him.
What do we think about what Brad is doing to this?
Because we like what he did to the defense.
We like what he did to the goaltending.
What do you guys think so far?
I mean, this can change today,
but I just want to know as of right now,
what do you think of this?
I don't know. Just for so many years, you could go into Toronto and not crack an egg. And I just don't think that's, that's going to happen anymore. You know, are they a better hockey team? I think that's, that's the very important question.
We won't know.
We won't know. And, and, you know, how do you replace Mitch Marner?
You don't.
I think the best way to replace Mitch Marner is not to go out there and be like, you know, how do we get these hundred points in the aggregate?
The best way to replace Mitch Marner is to change the kind of hockey team that you are.
And that is a defensively focused, not that he was bad at that, but a defensively focused team that is so not fun to play when you have the puck.
When the Leafs don't have the puck, they need to be a nightmare.
the Florida Panthers with the puck we know what they can do when they didn't have the puck it was
exhausting like the most relentless four check in hockey they're animals on the walls they're
animals coming up the middle they're just they're hitting you they're grinding you they're
screwing with you after every whistle it's not a fun time and the Leafs I mean
geez it must have been a nightmare for the broadcasters because uh geez we don't even
have time to throw out a commercial or nothing because uh there's no face washing after whistle
there's no nothing it's just too peaceful of a time and even though they have slowly gotten away
from that over the years there's still at the top way too much of it they they had too much
designated toughness toughness is something you need to have throughout the lineup like florida
so a designated tough guy can flourish right nize is tough hits like he's not a designated tough guy
no but he's tough yeah that's this is what i'm saying yeah you can't have this is our finesse
guy this is our tough guy right like wayne simmons comes in and we're tough now no you kyle clifford
we're tough now you have wayne simmons on the ice okay he's on the bench now now what are you or
jake muzzin yeah the only tough guy on defense we got jake muzzin okay he's on the bench now now
what are you baby shit right right it needs to be throughout the lineup and the best teams in the
league have that what do you think about jesse and steve uh pierre lebrun tweeted this out michael
pizzetta's name being out there uh potentially linked to the leafs grew up in the area another
high passion guy obviously canadians fans friggin love this guy yeah but we're talking about a
contract that's like what 900 grand yeah but in terms of add to the team and we're talking about
lower end of the lineup it's good uh it's great to have fresh bodies i think it's good they need
so many forwards still on their lineup they have just a pile of left wingers and nothing on the
right side they're just need guys so i feel like a 900 or whatever it's gonna be 7 7 7 50 zero points
in 25 games yeah so it might even be a two-way contract we're talking about maybe we're talking
about a guy who's looking at the alex nylander role possibly and we're getting excited for a
player and he comes in and he could do something maybe at some point in the season like he he
didn't he doesn't need to be an everyday player like no i i and i've said this on the show i don't
know how you would go back and find it unless you're an absolute sicko but i've liked uh pizzetta
since before he played an nhl game i remember watching the preseason leafs habs and i was like
who is this guy he's a maniac and just not nhl talent but all world effort and all world heart
and the he fought reeves at least twice like what a nutcase and he's big boy right oh he's uh he's
6'1 or 6'2 220 like big boy play but but forget big boy willing to do anything for his team and
not scared of anybody you sign him to be your i don't know 14th forward 13th 14th forward to get
you through the regular season how are we even wasting time uh asking whether or not this is
good or bad well i just want to know for for leaf fans like yeah i'm not no i don't i don't mean you
yeah like i just mean some people are gonna be like yeah but he's not the same second line
scorer in the ahl that i've been accustomed to yeah on the fourth line i mean we've been talking
about things the leafs have tried over and over and over again that haven't freaking worked that
that think of all the air we wasted on we gotta get alex kneelander in there what did he do
not much you know what i mean yeah that's that's exactly it like i don't think michael
posetta is a guy that's moving the needle at all it's good to have a body i'm happy that they're
getting guys who are passionate to be Leafs but his career high in salary is 812 so yeah like
sometimes you need a guy to come in and break someone's collarbone on December 6th is he gonna
is he gonna is he gonna score a point for the Leafs I think he didn't do that for the
Montreal Canadiens last year in 25 games maybe not if he brings you to your feet with a fight
seven times next season he's worth the money he's yeah but then we're then we're in the Ryan
Reeves territory you know then it's like we got this guy in here making 135 and Posada would be
like 800 grand and you can send it to the Marley's sure but then we're in the same area of like we
got a guy who's on the roster do just get the crowd hyped up for a fight and then Ryan Reeves
that was cool for a year and then it kind of went a little sour Jesse's bringing up a valid point
he needs to be able to play a shift yeah which by the end of the season like it was just obvious
Reeves couldn't do by like December it was obvious like so hopefully he's I saw him score a point
On a game-winner.
Reeves did.
He got an assist on a Stephen Lorenz.
That's more points than Michael Pezzetta.
Damn.
Damn.
Yes, but have you considered that Michael Pezzetta
fills the very key role for the Leafs of his Italian?
And I think...
What about Robert Gizzi?
Well, he wasn't on the Leafs, was he?
Not this past season.
It's true.
So, oh my God, can you imagine Pezzetta Mangiapane?
Oh, there's going to be a parade in Maple.
Woodbridge is going to go crazy.
that is gonna be a day like michael was that a cool you want to be a leaf not moving then okay
so so maybe two names that might okay okay and again i'm talking about the lower end of the
lineup here because we are de-emphasizing the core in this moment i'm trying to figure out
what brad's moves are in the bottom six two names that have come up tanner janeau and brandon tannev
not high scorers janeau is still like what 25 he's 26 he's young guy so there could be still
something there but they at one point i mean tampa really believed in this guy they spent a fortune
to get him didn't work out uh and they thought he might be like a big time power forward in the
league there probably are some tools there um i mean it's it's really hard to fluke your way to
20 plus goals in this league and he did it yep i i just you should go forward assuming that's not
there it's nice but maybe he's a 15 goal and nicola was a 15 goal even 15 like i'm going in
it realistically like yes i am allowing at the back of my mind in like a little folder in a
cabinet to be like but what if tanner janeau scores double digits yeah right i'm allowing
myself to dream that but really uh i mean we talked about like oh well can he play a shift
Tanner Janot can play a shift yeah that's what I mean that's why Tanner Janot is somebody I'm
legitimately excited about if he's on the lease for like a 1.1 million dollars like there is so
much I think hockey sense still in there there's the ability to have that 24 goal season he had
which is a couple years ago was in his when it's still on his rookie deal with Nashville way back
when like he's not that player because he's had enough time in the NHL but this is somebody who
still as of what a season ago still cost the kings a second and a fourth to acquire it's like
there has value there is talent there i hope that he's able to play on the right side for the leafs
as a left shot which will be a little confusing because they have so many left shots but tanner
you know has real value and can make an impact on the leafs i really hope they get a fourth line
for a very long time like they were unplayable most of the matthews era the least fourth lines
have been unplayable what they did in the playoffs this year is just it's just not how you win it's
just not typically how the stanley cup champion is built and like the who who was it it was patch
ready it was domey and who did they have line oh yeah uh mcmahon a lot of time it's just not how
it's built like you have to be able to fly in and hammer and smash and beat the shit out of your
opponent that is what they do the the last time there was there was like a fourth line with like
an offensive slant that i can think of that won the cup was like the caps with like brett connelly
davante smith pelly i don't remember who else played a pretty big role in that oh they were
awesome yeah they were awesome um but like tampa had it wasn't built like that they could chip in
a goal their third line was more like that like with blake coleman and barclay goudreau and was
it tyler who was who was the center of that line it was goudreau coleman and gourd man what a
bastard line that was the third line and they were incredible frigging awesome yeah but their
fourth line wasn't like that right no the fourth line i want to say was like maroon belmar was in
there i don't know if he was there the year they won the cup who was their center ah i think perry
was in there a few years i'm trying i'm trying i'm trying but the point being uh it was fun they
had their moments they helped win the series against ottawa but the cup champion that's
that's just not how it is like you you look at what the leafs ice and you're like all right we'll
put them put them in a one-on-one tournament it's just line versus line and it's them versus thomas
nosik jonah gadjovich and aj greer yeah he'd be like well the leafs won or even mackie sam
iskevich and any of the other guys who came in and played barely played like like what what i'm
saying is like yeah you would take the talent on the leafs fourth line that's not what a fourth
line does that's not what they do they're full of genoves okay uh what do you what does you know
about tenev uh what do we think about brandon tenev what do we think about now that guy was
making three and a half million bucks last year that's it's too much it's too much money this is
a guy that maxes out in the regular season as 10 goals you can't expect brandon tanniff to score
much for you in the playoffs uh penalty kill four check a little bit of size chip in the occasional
goal also vibes vibes funny funny pictures chris tanniff's brother and he's and he's got he meets
all those qualifications the thing about watching the blues jet series was that tanniff never stopped
skating like when he's out there he never stops the leafs a lot of times look tired yeah i was
like maybe it looks there there were times even against the sensor i'm like man they look a little
slow right now the the panthers well that's why i started to be like are they shitting themselves
do they have a stomach because they they like but it was like out of nowhere they look terrible
um the panthers oh like i don't know where they found that motor i don't know do they
have special bikes in florida like i i don't know um but that's what you need that is what you need
on the fourth line who's out there and it's not about making your team less talented you still
have nice you still have austin you still have willie you still have tavaris who is softening
them up for those killers yep at your best you go one-on-one with austin
maybe you do a good enough job one-on-one with willie one-on-one with john one-on-one with uh
matthew nice matthew nice thank you maybe what if you're in 95 what if you're in 90 what if you're
at 85 what if you're holy fuck that was a big hit from janeau holy shit i don't look at the window
and all of a sudden oh now you're at 60 and they replace you with another guy but he's 80 percent
of what you are and that's what the panthers did and have done for three straight freaking years
and so did the lightning before that they were not nice to play yes that's and that's how you
win the cup that is how you win the cup you think cernak and shen and those guys i mean listen i
know a lot of headman got a lot of the headman and vasilevsky got a lot of attention but the
rest of them were pretty look around the league every year every team has stars every team has
stars you got to tenderize the meat a little yeah you gotta make my life easier you know what i can
do you've seen what i can do i'm austin matthews what is he like man a lot of people were harder
on him in the playoffs than than i was and because i would watch him every shift and i'm like the guy
is trying his balls off but he's doing the role of like a middle six swiss uh army knife center
we need you to score and shut down barkov and and and and and digging in the corners and doing a
good job and he's winning battles and doing a good job and he's blocking shots and doing a good job
and we're 45 seconds into a shift.
And now he's got to go up the ice
and be 60 goal guy?
No, that's not how this works.
It's not how this works.
Someone else has to do that work.
Yeah, respectfully,
they got people to do that for Ovi.
I don't think I've ever seen him in a corner battle.
And they got people to do that for Crosby,
although he still finds himself in corner battles
because he's Sidney Crosby.
Oh, he's an animal.

Okay, so those are some of the things I wanted to bring up when it came to the Leafs.
Now, the last name I want to talk about, and when you listen to the CJ show today, CJ says, and I almost pooped myself on the sidewalk when I went for a quick walk before the show.
Every second that Marshan hasn't signed in Florida, the chances go up that Toronto and apparently Utah are very interested as well.
And weirdly enough, Drager said Boston also wants him back.
I said that a month ago.
They have all the space.
cj said okay but you're not gonna win a cup in boston trade him again no trade him again i mean
it's a good idea in but it's not nhl 25 imagine if you're roman polak is brad marshand what if
he's doing again what if he's not chasing another cup what if he wants to go home he's chasing money
could be that yeah he also grew up a leaf fan did mention that at the press do they give him
the captaincy back yeah they should right if he goes to boston hey here it is you left it for
like two months here you go did they already give it to someone else no no he was the captain up
until he got traded and then now he's not the captain they don't have a captain clearly going
to be mcavoy eventually but i think you probably just give it right back it's a hall of famer man
you give it to marshy hey charlie you can wait well exactly his run with the captaincy was like
six months yeah and then chara chara held bergeron out of that spot for a long time you gotta wait
it's boston they're winners we're one day we're gonna look back at bergeron's career and we're
gonna be like he was a captain for like three years i know because of chara some guy named
chara uh martian in toronto cj said this morning something like again it could be like as high as
nine million over four years but it's brad mother effing martian so your choices are overpay for
brad or don't have brad and i'm gonna just say with the cap going up i'm okay with it i'm okay
with it his age keeps going up so it so so sure it does yes but you front load the shit out of
that with bonuses right front load the shit out of that because our nhl teams are already complaining
oh but we simply couldn't pay that much money we're only getting two new expansion franchises
at two billion a piece but we certainly couldn't spend 115 million dollar on our roster this
episode agent provocateur watch a bunch of liars but but if you front load that marshand deal which
you still can do and then the last two years it's an easily tradable thing for a team that
can't spend to the cap or is fucking cheap um i think uh i think that's a deal that he can come in
and you know i would hope the leafs wouldn't trade and just let him retire here but if it works out
that you need to a couple years in then so what i look at it like you need a guy like that character
wise you need you need character guys and whatever he gets you 45 50 points in the regular season
can you imagine brad marchand and austin matthews no one is touching austin the contract feels ugly
it does yeah let's get this out of the way eight million dollars for an old man in terms of hockey
years it feels ugly and for way too long is it any different than pavelski with dallas when he
was making seven yes because pavelsky i uh if i'm not mistaken maybe you can find this yeah i don't
think he was 37 when he signed it now the other thing that deal worked out way better than i ever
imagined it could but when that bill came due they got ranted and it was over oh fuck i'm sorry i i
owe did dallas get bad when that bill came due dallas only made the western conference final
Here, let me give you this.
I also think that Joe Pavelski is the exception to the rule.
Would Brad not fall into that?
I don't think so.
We don't know.
I think the majority of guys who are that age
do not keep up their production
and aren't worth $7 million.
Joe Pavelski signed that deal in 21-22.
That's when the contract came up.
He signed it originally in 1920.
So how old was he?
He is 40 right now, so do the math there.
No.
Oh, so he was Marchand's agent.
Yeah, that's what I was bringing it up for.
You guys don't believe me.
No, I just didn't know.
He was coming off of a 38-goal season.
Holy shit.
And look at that.
He only scored 14 the next season.
Yeah, and then 25, 27, 28, 27.
Brad Marchand, he's a great dude,
not coming off a 38-goal season.
If it is a two-year deal.
It's not going to be.
Then I'm not doing it.
Well, if it's a two-year deal,
he had 23 goals last year he had 51 points can i say this
in 71 games it's wrong it's wrong no no we don't we
if you can't beat him join him but the opposite if you can't beat him buy him if you can't beat
him buy him that him in a leaf jersey is gonna look so fucking weird do you know how many leaf
jerseys would sell day fucking one if marchand is here he wouldn't have to play a game it would
be the best-selling jersey maybe he's more than an italian guy honestly well and and and here's
here's what i would say guys more i don't know if it's more than an italian guy like yeah you
never underestimate we identify with him but the nose look at the nose too he's one of ours
bond comes through they spend their cash they support their own my point is you say to brad
and jesse you mentioned this the leaves have never friggin taken advantage of how much money you can
make here in ancillary dollars that you don't have to pay escrow you don't have to pay your agent
it's just endorsements so nine million bucks that's that's fucking nuts but you say to brad
listen we know all the people that can pay you extra money why don't you just come in nine times
four i'm out i'm just i'm flatly okay yeah but leading into last year the bruins sucked ass
yeah right they were bad uh before that he had a 67 in 73 and he's 67 and 82
oh you don't have to sell me on the player he i have no problem with the player he is it's just
the money i don't you know what i don't even care i don't even care fucking pay him get his ass here
he needs to be here that's my opinion on it and is it a bad contract a hundred percent it's a
horrible country a hundred percent yeah but eight times four even i here's what i'm dying for the
toronto maple leafs to i want to love the toronto maple leafs again to sign a bad contract give me
a fucking give me a guy who i'm like yeah i don't care that you're just oh is oh man he's
everything that brad does toronto would die you're advocating for a bad contract i am and i'm owning
that and i'm proud of that you don't you don't like fun this is fun let's have some fun with
this the cap's exploding what about winning i think brad helps with that yeah but having a
bad contract on your books doesn't help winning do you want brad do you want two andrew manji
or do you want brad i think i think two if you get two of them if they duplicated right manji
like yes i would rather have that i don't think i would without a question i wouldn't smallish
forward who is not overly physical yeah but you get two of them that what we've had five of them
sometimes in the lineup and it does dick all come playoff time it'd be manjapanis by the way
it would be because you're eating two yes yes i'm just saying paninis oh
okay that's all i'm saying that's enough for that andrew manjapini all i'm saying
to go steve you got a jersey 69 mangia pini jersey mangia pini jesus
that's is that all sport check is that as good or call sport check get it printed i don't care
adam what i don't like this guy and his anti-italian discrimination i know first he
was talking crap about columbus day and now he's got this you're doing you're doing a soprano
i'm doing still this is like offensive to your own people no oh yeah you're talking about 69
mangia peenies and me doing sylvio dante is offensive who's the real
who's the real cultural i've seen double four mangia peenies
um exactly listen get the jersey uh with with martian now i hope he signs with martian
for years i've said with the bruins like one of the things i admire the most about them
is they draft bruins they sign bruins they develop bruins the leafs are this weird like
skill mosaic where they bring in guys who are very good sometimes not so good
sometimes they have more good guys than others sometimes what is a toronto maple leaf but what
you're referring to and what you're explaining is the kyle dubas era of toronto maple yes not
the current brad true living era and what are they we're gonna find out they are he's building
his own team for the first time so far they are bigger so far they are meaner but like i mean when
the Bruins got Trent Frederick I was just like how do they how do they keep finding these assholes
how do they keep finding these guys it's crazy right like guys who are Bruins guys who are like
I think there are players with the skill set of Charlie McAvoy I mean not many but there are
players with that skill set but it's an attitude it's a mindset if if bringing him in means you
help establish a mindset what the leafs are what the leafs have been for about a decade is guys who
rely on austin matthews to do everything that's been their identity rely on that's mitch marner
racer no no he should have probably been captain rely on the core four to do everything and then
we have like seat fillers basically for the whole rest yeah a bunch of nick ritchie's i get it yeah
and that's just not how you win in this league yep it's just not so i'm so worried about the money
i'm so worried about the term i'm so worried about his age i do think he's currently an extremely
good player i'm so worried about the hangover um but i need to know by the end of next season what
a leaf is because their identity beyond guys who just rely on the core four is well that's that's
what it's been i mean even the core four has been considered that right yes yes that's not great
it's not a great identity so and also not likable not a great public perception let's be honest like
i love the toronto maple leaf you know who you should be not like this is the most likable group
of guys i've ever seen previous to that no they're the only team that's unlikable to all 32 markets
now and that you should be unlikable to 31 like i and i compare that to the way that i would have
died for gary roberts or curtis joseph or doug gilmore or matt sundin alan mccauley in that in
that third round playoff run i would have died for babe die oh charlie conacher yeah stop i had
jersey jesse you're not that old okay you're not that no not yet so okay that's that sort of wraps
the leafs thing i just wanted to i want to get out there where do we stand on that so when we're
sitting here tomorrow and the deal comes through and if the leafs get them are you guys are you
going to not celebrate let's say matt he signs nine times four okay nine million times four years
oh my god no nine million are you gonna not well that's what cj said this morning on the cj show
no are you not celebrating if it's seven like i'm throwing the parade if it's nine no i'm upset
no here's the the way you do it you in the moment when he sign sign it signs it you use your brain
and you go that's too much and bad then when the season begins you go to your heart and you go yo
holy fuck Brad Marchand's a leaf isn't that nuts first time you see him dick with some player
step on his stick and break it trip him punch him behind the play do
it's gonna be awesome and then if they win it was brilliant the whole time and if they lose
you always knew it was gonna be bad because of the money there's a difference between rooting
for something and trying to predict what you think
is going to happen based on the transaction
and the move and the player. Every year I was like
I hope Mitch Marner gets 40 points these playoffs.
Like yeah. And then when he didn't
I was like well yeah. Did like going
into the series we're like ah Florida's going to win
like you predicted Florida I predicted Florida
where were you? I literally said Florida 7.
You picked the Leafs but like we wanted
we wanted the Leafs to win
because we're rooting for the Leafs but we thought
Florida was going to win. The last three
Leafs series I have gotten
winner number of games i'm uncomfortable with how accurate i am with that one team and the
leafs are two and three no they're one and one and two in those series like two but all those
three you're predicting the win so brad marchand signing with the least i hope next season he
scores a hundred goals i hope all of a sudden he's prime wayne gretzky and he scores a hundred
goals do i think that's gonna happen no do i want that to happen yes so that nine million dollar
contract i hope it works out for the sake of the leafs do i think it's going to be good probably
not okay all right now panthers i think they get him and akblad done so let's let's talk about this
okay i'm going to mention kevin ball and i'm going to mention nick haig but there's somebody else i'd
like to mention as well okay nick haig traded in nashville we already kind of talked touched on
this signs the contract i think it's six years five and a half uh kevin ball man same five and
half million dollar long-term deal with calgary okay um both guys in their mid-20s the the thinking
now is the evan bouchard contract oh man if that's what nick haig and kevin ball are getting
he should make 15 well here's what the thought is according to frege which is oh no four times
what's your guess and they're confident this relatively confident this gets done
so this would buy two years of ufa i think so it's four years by the way four-year contract
but it would take him
12 12 12 million jess for mr bouchard yeah uh four years uh 975 9.5 there you go wow oh yeah
that's okay and ball not to take away from them because they're kind of the they're almost the
same archetype just big like no they're not isn't ball big yeah no they're massive oh you mean like
literally just how their body as each other as each other nick hagen oh hagen ball yeah sorry
oh yeah kevin balls i was gonna have my friend committed come on i was very confused it was
pretty obvious what i was saying haig and ball kind of the same player confused kind of kind of
big kind of range you know what i mean right okay big and mean move forward bouchard real tough guy
real tough guy to get right in terms of like finding them in the draft sure only making four
million bucks more than those guys as like i think part of that is edmonton's a freaking winner
they've gone to the finals twice i don't i know they haven't won the cup but uh you know playing
13 games in the stanley cup final over two years is still pretty good um you know i think that
dare i say that's a bit of a hometown discount oh yeah now i know he's a restricted free agent
but he's kind of got all the balls in his corner doesn't he yeah well then when he is an unrestricted
free agent you have a few more seasons under connor mcdavid let's be honest like part of the
reason you're putting up all those points is the puck goes in right and it's not always you putting
it in those there's a lot of assists yeah well i know you got the boosh bomb and it's a lot of
assist yeah it helps to have connor and leon so you're gonna have another four years of connor
and leon cookies maybe well at least leon cookies you're gonna get your cookies you're gonna sign
for a kerbillian dollars and it helps that you've come really close and you might actually win it
9.5 jesse has the the the compensation pulled up so i was gonna bring this up in regards to
Evan Bouchard, I think it would be awfully interesting
if a team like the Utah Mammoth or the Anaheim Ducks said,
we're going to offer Evan Bouchard $11.7 million.
That would be at the second highest level of compensation for an offer sheet.
They can do it.
They are eligible under the eligible teams on Puckpedia.
That would net the Edmonton Oilers, if they decide not to match,
a first round two first round picks a 2026 second round pick and a 2026 third round pick it would
also put them in cap hell if they wanted to match it i think there should be talk amongst some of
these teams the ducks bruins flames blackhawks red wings kings canadians predators devils flyers
penguins mammoth and golden knights if they have the cap room to offer sheet evan buchanan he would
had to sign it yes unreal by the way that puckpedia puts eligible teams that are eligible
very cool we love puckpedia yeah so so good so i was looking at this yesterday with nize i kept
saying like he's not an offer sheet candidate and then i looked at the deal he signed and the tier
he would have fallen under i'm like oh shit he would have had to sign it he would have had to
sign it he was never a candidate because he was never gonna he was never gonna say i agree
You got yourself into a fuss for no reason.
If he did, it would have been a pickle.
It wasn't reality.
He's not signing an offer sheet at 7.75.
No, if this made-up thing happened, I'm upset.
At 9.3, which was the upper end of that threshold,
which was the point I was trying to make,
it would have been tough for the Leafs,
and they would have had to match it or make a bad decision.
That is a made-up reality.
is bouchard a made-up reality no i think there is a case to be made if you are the utah mammoth
right now and you're like you have we have in jersey why do you need bouchard because he's
evan bouchard so you trade one of those guys no you have them like you have those players they
play different sides sergachev is not playing the same side as jersey i know but how many
how many pucks is there to go around for there's a lot of pucks we don't know what jersey caps out
as oh that's not reality no this is this is something that is is still possible and i think
these teams should look at that and i think evan bouchard would be a type to be like i'm gonna take
an 11 million dollar deal as to as opposed to 9.5 million dollars i think there's significant
difference in there that evan bouchard would accept an offer sheet of 11.7 million dollars
you're doing what i was doing because you're a smart guy it would have been the upper echelon
of the of that tier so you're faced with we got to sign them to an ass contract or
take a very unsatisfactory compensation package of two first the second and the third is not
enough for evan bouchard because the edmunds don't always want to win the stanley cup next year
yes those first round picks don't help them what if the oilers offer she did them they're one of
the eligible teams yeah and what are you doing i'm looking at um oilers twitter and jim matheson
who is my favorite guy is toronto catching strays out of nowhere no so i'm curious about this okay
if you're evan bouchard at nine and a half you're leaving money on the table i think uh yeah
yeah that's why i think there's an offer sheet reality here uh jim matheson said if you if i'm
the Oilers I want to bring in Pat Kane
for a year at four million to play
right wing with dry saddle Kane and
wings again or maybe a shot he said or a
shit at another cup he meant shot at
another cup and then and then followed
it up with guess you folks have never
made a spelling mistake I I wonder I
wonder if he's my favorite I wonder if
bouchard leaving money is like okay we know mcdavid is going to sign a short-term extension
right so he's got one more year and then even if he signs two more years of the four years that
bouchard is there three of them you're basically guaranteed mcdavid all these guys are going to
be willing to take less to play on that team don't you think i guess my point
is like jess if you're utah yeah or one of these other teams like i feel like you gotta offer
something that like we're going to the playoffs and we're going to give you an opportunity i think
if you look at utah's roster and you brought up jersey and sure you have and like they play on
different sides that right side puckpedia has john marino penciled in as their first pairing
right-handed defenseman like i get he stay at home more so than sergachev so that's kind of
the match there but like imagine you're upgrading that right side so you have bouchard derzy as
your one two that makes a lot of sense to me and they have the cast space at 14 million i think
they have in eligible space right now to do something aggressive they have the pick compensation
almost 15 i think they need to get creative here if they want to actually take a jump because i
know their owner ryan smith keeps talking about doing something splashy and getting into the
the area with the big boys looking at the hammer the ekblad button well the hammer the ekblad
button that's one the other guy i wonder about for them uh and apparently is like super everybody's
calling about him is rasmus anderson i want to know what the flames ask for him is because if
bouchard makes sense rasmus anderson makes sense and uh and and you know a little older right and
you're from ufa but you're he wants to sign a long-term deal that would make a ton of sense
and you've got the draft capital go get them I think it's it's Ekblad it's Anderson like I think
they want something splashy here this offseason I think either of those options I think are on
the table for them it's a great summer to be trading guys because in free agency everyone
is going to make I mean early indicators are insane money yep so if you have someone on like
it's like a bc and ad like if you have if you trade someone who has a 2025 or earlier contract
like you're you're getting a player at a really nice cap hit and the team who's trading them can
ask for the sun and the moon if they want that or i'll just keep the player on an awesome deal
yeah right if you can sneak in those eight-year deals as much as you can yeah i think it's gonna
be a pretty tradie summer yeah uh also worth mentioning it looks like mad dumb is not going
to be bought out by the stars this is their last day to put them on waivers we've passed the the
deadline so that's interesting well maybe they can trade them like maybe maybe that 3.75 whatever
he makes becomes valuable it doesn't look so insane yeah maybe it's good value for them even

who very quietly put up 57 points 33 goals last year really really good player how about this
signing guys uh he is staying on a uh i'm just pulling it up here uh i jumped in i jumped my
own gun here uh six year 33 million dollar contract uh that feels real good 5.5 million
for a centerman who's on his way up their third round draft pick he's 26 pretty good damn like
no that's a very good deal you expect him to be a middle six guy until he's 32 right he had the
most sneaky 30 goal season of any player in the nhl yeah i don't think on the surface anybody's
like a morgan geeky 33 goals last season he's clearly getting better and i think it's a good
bet on geeky to continue his production you're reminding me of a quote i read in the hockey news
years and years and years ago when i was working at the toronto zoo and not doing my job
and that was on even on bad teams someone has to score and enough time has passed that i hate it
even more because no they don't yep look around the league no they don't uh and geeky found a way
to score a ton on a team that was just drowning i believe that that ethos in basketball because
you don't see teams lose 120 to 50 no like the scores always kind of match because somebody is
out there to score get buckets even on bad teams they're gonna lose but some they're gonna score
you know in the range of nba teams in the nhl it's so hard to score it's like it's not that
easy where somebody's gonna put the puck in the net no it takes a tremendous amount of skill to
put up three 33 goals in a season don't look into that gun to your head hostage situation who the
hell were his line mates right nobody he's listed as a center right which one was it you know what
i mean and he still put up 33 goals this is a disrespected season yep no for sure and it and
disrespected by everyone including himself apparently um five five and a half and and
connor what the all right and henry yokiharu uh has re-signed with the bruins as well three years
nine million dollar extension so three million bucks a year 26 years old dude that guy getting
three mil has me like i think there's gonna be some crazy numbers out out there tomorrow like
it's gonna be nuts what does he top out as i think what he is which is a bottom pair
three minutes oh guess what that's why i said oh oliver eckman larson's not a good uh
well i i think henry okiharu is making three million bucks i don't mind uh oliver eckman
larson at three it's a good season it's a good summer to have your goldie tandem locked up yeah
it's a good summer to have your whole decor locked up for until they're dead yeah because
they're all going to be dead they're all all us us too us too we will not even be here to talk
about it we'll all be dead um but man some of the early indicators uh you a lot of people are
going to have a really difficult time wrapping their head around some of these numbers i think
boston went one for two over the weekend you know you don't like everything no i don't think it's
great i think you need warm bodies and you do but is that the guy you want like lock it in
your second pair on the right side for three million bucks it's not it's not it's not a huge
miss yeah it's it's a bit it's a bit rich but like geeky is seeing what people around the league are
getting i mean that's a i don't what on earth made him accept that deal do we think boston's
a playoff team next season based on their current roster they'll be hunting they'll be hunting
they're not what they're healthier though yeah they'll be healthier I mean you immediately get
one of the best pairs in the league back at Lindholm McAvoy that pushes down Yokiaru and
Zdorov Lorai just got all that money too forgot about that 3.2 for two seasons um a peak there
275 as well oh there's Patra I was like where the hell's Patra your center depth is Lindholm
zaka middle stat minton you're gonna need geeky probably maybe slots in the center you're gonna
need your young guys to step up so you need patra you need lasalle you need uh geeky to continue to
be what he was kuznetdinov scoring more than a point every eight or nine games will definitely
help and we'll see if minton's a full-time nhl it's nice of the sharks to allow their owner to
play on the boston bruins what oh yeah there he is on the left side oh yeah that's funny uh i i
listen i don't think boston's gonna blow anyone out of the water it wouldn't shock me if they're
back in the playoffs next year and i and i say the same thing about the rangers too i know there's a
lot in flux there teams like montreal and ottawa no disrespect but you needed boston to fall off
in historic fashion and new york to fall off they won the fucking president's trophy i think both
those teams are better though i do think they're better too yeah but i think they're not them the
bruins like better than themselves previously yeah 100 i'm just saying there's gonna be a real
fight for the wild cards this year oh it's never easy is it well yeah that's a little easier this
year um it's like it was like those two versus like columbus who made a late charge but you know
um john gibson traded to the detroit red wings 12 years with the anaheim ducks and he was traded in
11 of them uh but he has fully signed uh or stayed sorry uh been traded excuse me peter
marazic 2027 second round pick in a 2026 fourth round pick going to anaheim and you know i was
of the belief that like man you got a good thing in your goaltending keep keep the good thing going
but john gibson actually had told pat verbeek i want to get well and now they're red wings west
because you have Dostal who you don't have signed um you have Mrazek making four plus
and you signed Vili Uso to 2.2 which means Mrazek is not staying you got to trade him
I I think I don't know what what bothers me I think with the Ducks is it's like
if you give me Peter Mrazek you should have to pay for that
right like you should have to pay for me to take four million dollars of Peter Mrazek
that's not like that's not nearly enough and i i and i like what the ducks have done
steve eisenman's like hey you ever you ever see the wallman deal yeah yeah a very merry
unbirthday to you and he's the mad hatter and it's yeah but if i'm the ducks i'm like i'm not
taking that that's not unless you think a team like the oilers is going to come along and go
we'll we'll give you we want peter marazic all of a sudden this trade is loki two of the most
unhinged gms in the league they're nuts both of them are insane it's great that they do business
together i kind of hope they do more more maybe maybe loop barry trotson on that one see what
happens a nice little freeway oh put them in a group chat uh forget the kachuks and the do you
know how anaheim acquired uh villy husso from detroit uh no
waivers he was traded to anaheim for future considerations right yeah because he was awful
there was there was nothing going back the other way and there still is nothing so this trade i
look at it as husso and morazic and the second and the fourth for uh john okay uh i can see that
you know like that maybe that fourth in this deal is for taking on husso that's them doing
good business yeah i think this deal is kind of in the future considerations because nothing was
paid by detroit for that deal go look at his season last year he was so hot oh yeah just in
detroit awful he played five good games in anaheim he put up good numbers it's five games they must
really really believe in this uh also worth mentioning since we're on the subject of detroit
and this just happened tarasenko's rights have been traded to the minnesota wild 11 goals and
33 points in 80 games so i would assume you know tarasenko and caprizov like there's a russian
connection there yeah good scoring winger depth for minnesota probably doesn't cost you all that
much there's gonna be a good team um and by the way it was future consideration so the rights were
just given oh yeah so you're just doing that's eisenman doing bill garren a favor well i think
you're probably doing tarasenko a favor he's you know it's like because they're not trying to
resign them right so he was gonna sign there on july 1st anyways so they just made it quicker
so they could figure out the actual contract yeah so we're looking whatever i don't think
minnesota's in like competition for tarasenko you know what i'm saying yeah whatever i don't know
fine i i do wonder about this sort of thing because we're looking at that and we're like
okay you're doing right by the player could it also be like a rival of the red wings are in on
this guy and he's just like ah screw you guys wait a second so i read that he's a future uh
no he's got a year left on his deal oh that changes everything wrong ah there's no salary
retention tarasenko's got a year left at 475 you weren't able to get anything for tarasenko
not at 5 million 33 points yeah that is kind of a lot leaves them so that at least you didn't have
to attach a pick to him this time i guess yeah the wild have 13 million to spend next or tomorrow
so it was a cap dump it was a cap dump for nothing yo is eisenman cooking a little bit
i hesitate he does like spending money in free agency i'm surprised they couldn't get anything
now even that as a cap dump he's got more money to spend on patch ready tell alan let's go what's
what's going on in detroit there's some things going on there well they still got to get cane
done yeah they will for everything i've heard this helps right he's done uh they'll get it done um
okay uh a few other things to mention obviously rasmus anderson we mentioned earlier apparently
everybody was in on him this weekend there was like 10 teams that called and none of them had
offers that the calgary flames were interested in i wonder what this guy i know it seems sexy
and fun to trade him now and it is but man it'd be a real interesting deadline pickup for a team
wouldn't it well you have that option if you're calgary right there's no rush yeah but if you
wait till the deadline what if you hurt you what if he's hurt and his value is now i think a little
depressed because there's no real guarantee that he re-signs with the team you trade him to this
show is a waste of time what do you mean this show's a complete waste of time he gets traded
it after this you know how stuff happens after we record yeah there's gonna be like six major
yeah you're right you're right also i've what is calgary uh just like a factory for defensemen for
the rest of the league they are like okay so we're gonna build up uh tanev he's gonna be great we're
gonna trade him uh noah hannifin he's gonna be really good and then we're gonna trade him oh
yeah i think rasmus anderson he's gonna we're gonna build him up he's gonna be really good
and then we're gonna trade don't forget about adam fox fucking defenseman factory for the rest
the nhl technically built up in vancouver yeah but he was he excelled in calgary and then they
moved him and then so what oh what are you doing here you made a trade what uh just in case i
didn't mean to create matthias maselli traded to toronto for a third rally yeah oh so the italian
connection all right what do we know about him that's uh the kid from utah right yeah oh i i
know he was uh really um they uh huh uh 55 games last year eight goals 10 assists 18 but he did
have previously on the coyotes 82 games the year before for 17 goals 40 assists 57 points he had a
very good season and and uh fell off no i i do remember that um by the way where's he from
is it toronto no is it maple what country is he from is it italy finland what
yeah no i mean europeans move around maselli is very clearly an italian name originally but he is
from turku finland there you go i know is he an army bro i have no idea what yeah okay yeah i'm
learning things i had no idea yeah what okay so tell me about please because i i am admittedly
uh caught here uh tell me about his his contract he's going into year three so one one year left
it's a bit high 3.425 million for 17 points but if he's going to score 50 ish points which he did
the previous two years he had 149 and then 157 point season you could see a guy like that being
very worth three and a half million dollars salary retention uh it doesn't appear that there is
any uh it's a conditional third by the way it's not a set in stone third third so it could go up
could go down yep okay um what position they got him playing uh that is also a very very good
question i i think he's a left wing right wing guy that you can can play as a wing and they need
wing because my ears perked up i'm like wait a sec is he a center is the nick wah deal about to
fall through i don't think so very interesting okay okay i think that's a guy that they're
hoping might be able to play top six if you think about oh like thinking i'm just gonna play with
neil andrew and tavaris no it's uh because bobby wasn't the greatest there i don't think bobby's
all that i'm not i mean at his contract you can't really he's got to figure himself out
i don't still got 20 goals i don't complain about him at all no he feasted on guys lower
down in the lineup but that's what his job he probably will continue to do that or he's best
suited to do that if he stays on the third line there are two open spots in the top six it's first
line right wing second line left that's fascinating that is a fascinating one you're gonna have to go
home and do a video about this i know that or do you want me to do it here no no no well i mean
well whatever you want to do i don't really care but uh i'll do it at home i'll do it at home um
hungry it's a it's a it's a bet for the Leafs right I would say chess like a bet on on a guy
having a good comeback playmaking abilities there like I love his assist numbers uh last year's
down year but I think before that he's proven that he's got some really good playmaking abilities
that's kind of what you need because you got the guys who can put the puck in the back of the net
and Austin and Tavares and Willie so you need somebody to feed them the puck and I think
uh Michele can be useful for them like I don't I don't hate this deal at all I think it's a good
bet there are some places about his defensive game but yeah you know the contract's a i guess
a little high but i think he can perform at that level like three seven five isn't isn't like
nothing it's it's definitely not an expensive deal but it's in the range of like if he doesn't work
out it could be you're you're hating the deal but i think there's potential there for for this kid
to excel so here's where i'm like okay i guess i didn't watch utah closely enough this past season
11 goals 49 points way uh 17 goals 57 points way how the how did you drop all the way to 18 and 55
what the hell happened there apparently he's got great underlying numbers as well and his
underlying numbers last year despite the fact that he was not it just seemed like not a fit
under andre torney um he's not he's his advanced his advanced stats were higher last season despite
the lower production and he was scratched around the deadline um and they tried to include him in
some deals and nobody wanted to take it because 3.45 million in somewhat of a flat cap environment
uh was a lot at this past deadline that's a lot of money if you're trading for guys at the deadline
you want guys who can help you win now why am i acquiring an injured player trent frederick if i'm
trying to win now yeah right like i like i'm looking at trent frederick and i'm i'm you know
his fit on the Oilers going forward actually it makes more sense than it did this past playoffs
just to use that as an example that's a fascinating deal well and and from what I'm
reading this is a guy to put money on this is a guy you shouldn't probably have in your top
or in your bottom six this is a guy who should be in the top and I think they need to take some
bets on guys in the top six you know what I love right now and I'm just realizing it I don't know
what they're doing it's fun i don't know what they're doing and like i'm not saying that like
what are these guys doing i'm saying it like every year trade deadline summer every we knew exactly
what they were doing because there was so little that they could actually do i'm looking at this
and going okay well do they do manjapani then do they have to do manjapani do they need manjapani
well what about the depth guys could they maybe do something on d could they it's fascinating
yeah and it's fun and i'm gonna do a deep dive on his heritage because his dad is finnish and
his great-grandmother is italian thank you where'd you find that it's on his wikipedia page
thank you his mom was american born she moved to finland when she was like seven i think it said
and then uh they married obviously and they had the kid but his great-grandmother on his father's
side is italian so michelli is italian love that um uh by the way robert malloy uh sdpn uh employee
uh big time friend of the show is thrilled about this it's one of his favorite players oh so him
and toffoli michelli and toffoli he loves his boys he was scratched for 13 consecutive games last
season couldn't crack the utah mammoth lineup it's a concern uh well listen i don't know where
you fall in it dom decision thinks it's a good bet a lot of people are positive about this
julian mckenzie thinks it's a good bet uh so it's interesting uh travis yost i think
maselli is a nice player very curious how he slots in with toronto geez me too trav um what i i'm
guessing what is out there in free agency would be more expensive right again this is a really
interesting i mean literally day today um to be the team trading a guy
hmm i'm okay so i i didn't i had no idea that was so what's a utah cooking dropping three and
a half million bucks now with what's almost 17 to spend they're going for ecblet yeah i think
that's gonna be a monster there's also a player they clearly weren't using yeah yeah oh yeah no
it makes perfect sense it makes perfect sense to have him in the market um for them it's it to me
it's real easy to explain for utah it's a little there's a little more faith required on the leaf
side of it he's also smallish 5 11 185 pounds he'd be the only second guy in their forward group
under six feet with max domi maybe they did some tests and they know he's actually six foot that
could be it that could be it uh jordan spence uh gets moved to the senators here's a guy that i
did not know also asked for a trade out of uh los angeles um and you know it's interesting jesse you
talk about uh uh who is funding the league in terms of defensemen uh i think calgary's up there
i think anaheim was that team for a while i also think the los angeles kings have done a pretty
good job of finding developing and then punting out the door certain defense but jordan spence
much like Sean Dursey before him was blocked has some offensive upside but also might be
it depends on what happens in Ottawa this year because I think he's a good secondary puck moving
mobile defenseman for them behind a guy like Jake Sanderson the question is he was blocked in LA
might he also be blocked on a pretty talented Sens core that includes Thomas Shabbat yeah like I'm
looking at the right side they had Martin Paulo uh on the third pair Mountain Paulo to use her
yeah you got you got jensen you don't have hamannik anymore i'm trying to think of who else
was in there clevin's a lefty it's difficult off the top of my head um like the names i saw getting
thrown out there for like okay he might turn into something that or he's gonna just be another
like eric brandstrom he's gonna be another victor mette another guy with like this tantalizing
upside that never really gets realized um and as elite fan that's what i hope happens
i hope i hope he doesn't make it on account of he signed with the sins boo to this man
um but um a really low cost bet for them uh another guy that will not be an rfa uh is joel
hoffer uh who uh is a you know st louis blue for two more seasons 3.4 million bucks each year and
that's a guy where again i go 3.4 million there's the offer sheet candidate jesse has the uh the
list of people and i wondered if the oilers had the picks to do it because they could have sure
used a goalie like that don't you think oh 100 i immediately i took a leaf slant and i'm like
that joseph wool contract's pretty sweet um because that doesn't even kick in until next
year it's a little more expensive than hofers but it goes for an extra year is it a four-year
deal or is it three wool is three oh three times 3.66 okay i don't mind that um hofer it's it's
kind of it's a little rich for a backup but again i'm having to you know this is the first crop of
contracts in a new reality for the league so these contracts are the ones i'm gonna have the most
trouble with yeah and like the hofer deal like you're paying them kind of to be not quite 1b
but to split a lot of the games with binnington like i think it's a reasonable amount for the
amount you expect him to play because you don't want binnington playing 70 games 60 games probably
going to be a 50 um 30 split which i think is reasonable for 3 million bucks 3.4 million bucks
for hofer and he's only 24 like his deal expires and he's still an rfa that's crazy sometimes i
look at his numbers i go i don't know but the fact that he's only 24 that's that's a bit harsh
like uh 24 you're not really supposed to be in the league yeah for goaltender yeah that's super
young the fact he's already in there this will be a good player matthias maselli's conditional
third pick has uh the condition has been revealed it looks like it upgrades to a 2020
it's a conditional third in 2027 but if maselli gets 51 points next year or more it not just
51 points if it's 52 it actually just downgrades but uh uh 51 points upgrades to a 2029 second
round pick if toronto makes the playoffs this year and maselli gets at least 51 points so it
clearly seems that toronto and utah believe the potentials there my god yeah wow that is that that
condition is almost an endorsement you know what i mean it's like well a little bit right i it's
gonna be really funny in 2029 when we're like why the hell don't they have a second
um now uh the thing is if you're toronto and he's got 49 points and there's two games left
in the season you're fucking scratching it right yeah you're like sorry buddy we're not doing that
hey your uh leg hurts right yeah and what's the difference to him like it's not like you
get a performance ball no that means nothing to him you might as well scratch him yeah yeah
that's funny that's really funny yeah alex steves you are a second line yeah hey man what's up you
like nhl salaries right yeah that uh alex steves by the way we got a free agent big day tomorrow
yeah so tune in uh all day we're gonna be throwing videos together uh for trade deadline and then
we're gonna have a stream at the end of the day sort of wrapping the day up what time does the
stream start do we have we sorted that it'll be when the things start petering out we're thinking
five o'clock yeah but we're not it depends on how the day goes right so uh be tuned into the sdp on
youtube channel if you're not subscribed like now's the time to hit subscribe on our youtube
channel um and then yeah get that when we go live notification around five o'clock in the afternoon
