Starting point is 00:02:30 the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake well hello there hi well it's july and we got nothing to talk about play the extra hit it hit it jesse tom dundon let's go we'll never not be embarrassing eh oh man he is the train of i refuse to do anything just like like listen let me ask you this you think tom dundon has an ego just a little you think tom dundon is a pain in the ass uh a teeny tad do you think tom dundon loves being called a pain in the ass because i think he loves it i think if you're calling him that he's like good i'm doing a good job i can't get a read on that guy no no this is this yeah yeah i think you probably have the right read there imagine i don't understand this person
Starting point is 00:03:29 imagine playing monopoly with tom dundon he just flipped the board i don't think he'd flip the board or he'd be like i went i think he'd screw his own kid i thought i do i i this guy is unbelievable now jesse at the top of the uh the prep sheet there we've got the thing that's going to kick off the conversation today and it is whose names are engraved in the stanley cup this is the very same stanley cup that jesse and i saw a couple weeks ago that had not yet gone to the place where they engraved the names yeah it was it's a pre-engraving when we saw it yeah and they and they were like denting it was very dented maybe they bashed the shit out of it because it's not sacred anymore and i guess doesn't mean anything well it's interesting because
Starting point is 00:04:13 because uh they said it's going to the the people next week they're going to put the name on it they're going to fix it up so it's all fixed again probably only to get beat up although at all the player parties over the course of the summer let's bring this up jesse i want you to go through these names with me and i will read them up or we read them excuse me uh tom dundon uh varushka dundon caden dundon dax dundon drew dundon blake dundon tazen dundon uh Tegan? I think it's a G. Tegan? Well, listen, he names his kids like the
Starting point is 00:04:47 WHL draft. Right. Dax, Drew, Blake, Tazen, Caden. They're all going to make it. They're all going to make the show, for sure. They're all going to make the NHL. Those are the first two lines of the Stanley Cup engraving, and then we get to
Starting point is 00:05:02 somebody named Brian Fork, who I do not know, then Eric Tulsky, then Rod Brendamore. Tim Gleason's on there. Hey, Tim Gleason, what's up? Former Leaf? And I want to, I wanted to highlight this. Yeah, he was. Oh man, I forgot about that. That was, oh, that's the Elder Scrolls.
Starting point is 00:05:19 Good, well done, Adam. Nice to see Justin Williams' names on there. There's a bunch of players' names on there. Notably omitted from this. And I love this. Big shout out to Lance Lasowski from Buffalo. He writes for the Buffalo News. He said, Joel Nystrom played 38 games for the Hurricanes this year.
Starting point is 00:05:38 Not engraved on the cup. one of the kids that is on the stanley cup is in kindergarten what like listen i don't understand but okay peter pocklington yes put his dad on the cup in the 80s and the nhl stepped in and said no and so if you look at the cup there's x's through his dad's name i don't understand that by the way like do they not have a way of just like you can't just fill it in you you got it you have to put x's i think you have to well i mean you only get to do it once right and and i i also think that that's them sending a message of i don't know i'm not a metal worker i don't know how this works i don't i'm sure they could heat it up or
Starting point is 00:06:21 whatever but you want to make it smooth yeah like i see the cup get dented i don't know how these things work i see the cup get dented and i'm like well it's broken no no no i have to get a new one Yeah, I think you're right, Steve, that you could, but I think it's more of a message of smooth that out. Get this person off the cup. Right. And it's more of an act like like just a reminder to you to you idiots. You can't do that. Right. Right. Right. Now, Tom Dundon went and he done that. And what's what's a crazy, crazy thing about Tom Dundon is he can't ever stop being embarrassing. And Kane's fans do not deserve the embarrassment that he that he reaps on the franchise. Guys, now, does he run a smart organization?
Starting point is 00:07:04 Absolutely. Did he hire the right people? Absolutely. But Tom Dundon, Tom Dundon has done this so many different ways and times that I think it's time that we go, Tom Dundon's a pain in the ass, so that's what I'm naming this segment. Maybe he's a fun guy. Yeah, I don't even know what Tom's like in person.
Starting point is 00:07:22 Like, maybe he's a wicked guy to have a beer with. I have no idea. Most people in hockey are wicked to have a beer with. Not the owners, though. No, not the owners. You're probably right. you think ed rogers is a party no no i don't think so i don't think jeremy jacobs is a great time i think jeremy jacobs would scare the shit out of you yes right like i don't want to have
Starting point is 00:07:41 a beer in your presence because i'm not sure what's going to happen you know what i mean yeah he'd glass you to me to me jeremy jacobs is the nhl's version of uh succession he's logan roy i think he's mr burns well isn't that isn't that the cartoon version of logan roy i guess so tom dundon tom dundon um did a few things this year that were super embarrassing less known about in the hockey community more known about in the nba community but we're gonna go back guys i got i got list okay so he stranded some two-way players he refused to let two-way players caleb lubb and chris uh youngblood and jason kent travel with the portland trailblazers to san antonio for the first round of the playoffs to cut travel costs the playoffs he later issued
Starting point is 00:08:31 public a public podcast apology calling it a mistake yeah no shit tom you know what's crazy that nobody felt comfortable enough to tell him in the moment this is a bad idea it's all right which tells you about right the kind of people he may or may not have around him tom you need some advisors pre-game hotel with the next we talked about this on the show he forced the team support staff including medical personnel and team masseuse to check out of their phoenix hotel by 12 30 p.m on game day to avoid late checkout fees heavily disrupting player preparation because remember they do a lot of that in the hotel by the way it's like 20 bucks to get late checkout and it's like i think at 3 p.m yeah but 20 times like what 16 players no no jesse you're
Starting point is 00:09:18 right there might that might have cost you 200 bucks what's that really loud what's that loud american money guy's name jim kramer oh yeah mad money yeah wasn't he on some show and they're like what's financial advice like how do i get rich and he's like go to olive garden then fill up on breadsticks and they were like no but really he's like i'm serious what all right cool thanks for that all right um i remember john stewart had him on after the crash and he was like listen you gave people a ton of advice and they followed it and look what happens like you don't take any responsibility for that and he's like no still he's like you knew this was happening yep two decades later and you don't feel bad about it no um axing playoff t-shirts he canceled the
Starting point is 00:10:01 traditional free fran flan excuse me free fan appreciation t-shirts for home playoff games and defended the choice to the orgonian which is the newspaper in oregon uh in case you couldn't tell about the title anyway by stating that complaining fans were focusing on the wrong things hey tom you're focused on the wrong things you're focused on the wrong i need to put a kindergartner on the cup now this is part of what this next one is is a part of what tom does wherever he why are there rules on this well i thought there were why are there specific rules on like if they're not a team employee they can't be on the stanley isn't that why peter pocklington's dad is yeah that's that's so i'm so confused there are rules how a child got on
Starting point is 00:10:46 what's he gonna do what are they gonna do x out six names here's the problem yeah uh it's it's now these guys these owners are now so rich like what's gary betman really gonna do back then yeah you could have team owners go bankrupt back in the day you have billions of dollars now you're not going bankrupt what are you talking about you're too diversified it's not gonna happen yeah the theme of the last few years is nothing matters yeah rules don't matter one funny note about uh his wife also being on there uh under the name dundon uh publicly based on all public information she goes by her maiden name tiller so uh that's a way to get around i think getting her on the cup is they put dundon there can you imagine they put on marushka hiller
Starting point is 00:11:30 and people be like who the fuck is that who is that tiller i think it is oh it killer tiller tiller oh i thought it was killer killer would be better yeah jim hiller but uh yeah not yet tiller yeah no that that kindergartner really did a lot of work when he took over the portland trailblazers and this is something he did with the carolina hurricanes too after the family that were suing each other they had the greek last name i forget what their name but remember that what was their name oh the previous owner yes and they were carmanos carmanos and they were disasters those guys disasters father being sued by son and and sister crazy well what did we talk about on sdp vip you get to a certain level of fame and fortune and you just get weird yeah weird
Starting point is 00:12:09 guy now uh he laid off 70 franchise business employees in his second month of ownership prompting local media to compare his arrival to landlord barging into your kitchen which is kind of funny all right now he's also and i've talked about this there's a 600 million dollar renovation for the moda center in uh in portland guys this is just this year okay um he said the the city and the county and the state should cover it all he said based on the taxes i'm paying you need to cover it all and of course what has he done he's done exactly what they've done they did in edmonton exactly what they did in calgary exactly what they do in the mlb and the nfl he's threatened to move the team of course to hartford yeah there you go i don't know where he'd move it i guess
Starting point is 00:12:55 houston gotta be hartford um now there's already a team in houston out back back in oh the leafs No, no, no. Hockey team. Oh, you're right. Football. We're not talking basketball. Yeah, idiot. Maybe Austin then.
Starting point is 00:13:07 We're the next NHL team. Oh, we're talking about basketball. And I said Hartford. No, you know what? Stephen, you suck. Hartford basketball. I'm into it. Two trailblazers.
Starting point is 00:13:16 The Rockets, two. Hey, you know, it's really difficult for me to switch lanes. I don't know if you know that. Now, let's talk about some of the other stuff. Hey, guys, did you watch the Alliance of American Football? I know I did. No. Oh, I remember this.
Starting point is 00:13:32 this was pre-covid he bought a majority stake remember this guy was super cheap laid off a bunch of people in care with the carolina hurricanes has done this in his own businesses and stuff too he saw he bought a majority stake in the aaf for 250 million dollars by the way billion uh only to shut the league down mid-season weeks later leaving players and coaches stranded on the road without flights home or medical coverage he was sued by a bankruptcy trustee for allegedly tanking the league to harvest its tech and claim a tax write-off a judge ultimately cleared him of fraud in late 2025 finding him a symbolic one dollar for a minor breach of fiduciary duty but of course it's 2025 and 2026
Starting point is 00:14:16 so nothing matters um he was also caught trying to aggressively scrub and delete all historical references to the aaf collapsing uh from his personal wikipedia page in 2021 yeah uh rod brindamore won the jack adams contract was up and they were happy to pay rod a little bit more than rod was making before but if you guys remember we talked about this on the show rod would not sign until the assistant coaches and all of the training staff were paid in rod's mind wages yes like proper wages wages in which you could survive and prosper yes right he said dundon openly told management he quote didn't see the value in paying assistant coaches premium wages he operates his philosophy is that if you're an executive at a standard multi-billion
Starting point is 00:15:09 dollar company you earn between 500 000 and a million dollars a year sports coaches and executives shouldn't be paid multi-million dollar dollar premiums this approach is highly publicized uh when he took over the hurricanes he obviously laid off a bunch of people you guys remember the john forsland debacle john forsland from oh i don't remember the details of that no okay he was their play-by-play guy for 25 years yeah yeah so uh dundon refused to renew forsland's contract on a full-time as a full-time team employee with benefits instead he demanded Forslund transition into an independent contractor forcing Forslund who was like beloved and is one of the best hockey callers in the sport um to take a massive pay cut cover his own taxes and
Starting point is 00:15:55 health care jeez cover what uh he also uh in a move media outlets outlets called outright offensive Dundon offered a deal where Forslund's compensation was built on a base stipend plus a bonus scale directly tied to arena attendance what what is the play-by-play guy have to do with people coming to the building he's for they don't want they don't listen to the play-by-play guy in the building you dumbass oh my god this is this is all oh my god this is all out there on the internet again i'm not reporting this this is what's been reported forzland openly expressed a desire to stay in raleigh and was reportedly willing to accept below market rate out of loyalty to
Starting point is 00:16:39 fans. Dundon still refused to budge on the lowball offer and let him walk away. After negotiations fell through, Forslund revealed that Dundon and the Hurricanes' front office completely ghosted him, never reached out to offer a simple thank you or a formal goodbye after
Starting point is 00:16:55 three decades. How long is this list? It's long. This is almost as long as the number of family members he has on the cup. Hurricanes' local broadcast ranking immediately plummeted from number one to 30th in the league. who's ranking uh i i who's ranking it was uh they were never gonna vote for whoever the yeah that's true they're never gonna do that uh i have to look that up jesse so it's seattle it's the seattle
Starting point is 00:17:19 kraken because remember he went to seattle kraken um so i think it was probably from that so maybe that's a bit of a misnomer um just two years prior dundon uh ran off uh sorry yeah he ran off a hall of fame radio broadcaster chuck caton by lowballing his contract choosing instead to cheap out uh by simply simulcasting the television audio and the radio now to be fair to him that's what the entire industry has started to do so just just simulcast oh take that one off the list yeah that's not so bad now we just have 80 things on the list instead of 81 oh my goodness and these are just the things that are reported on yeah and so listen does it mean he's a bad guy no i'm sure he loves his kids i'm sure he's a blast to be around what the hell adam i can i i'm gonna get
Starting point is 00:18:11 that spray ball i'd like to interject and just say yeah he's a bit of a bad guy i told the story back when we told that portland story the first time around tom dunnan made his money through subprime lending he worked at a car dealership for chevrolet way back in the day i think in the 90s He learned about how the loan industry worked. And from there, he started putting giving out loans to high credit individuals and preying on those individuals with bad credit with these loans that they couldn't eventually pay back because there's a reason they have high credit. And that's how he made his money. Cool. No, it's a pretty scummy guy from the onset.
Starting point is 00:18:46 Apparently, only 53 name slots of the 55 were even used on the cup. So he so he left a player and played 38 games. did you see the the nick deloria got the exception right so i would i would think if the team felt he needed the exception they would have given it to him like because the fact that they left so i assume like the guys in the locker room probably yeah maybe about that one i don't know like that one i'm not too fussed about his child being on there i'm fussed about yeah yeah do you see the aaron ward tweet yeah i don't get it so i think he's saying a member of the training staff was left off okay well he didn't i can't guess at what he's at what he's aaron's tweet is not good
Starting point is 00:19:26 oh no disrespect to aaron but there's no content i don't know who bobby gorman is i don't know who that is fair enough it's like like i don't know who is that let's let's so aaron here give us some context i want i want to say two things i want to say two things at the beginning of all this you said tom dundon uh built a winner he did no he breakneck speed did not uh tom dundon is an owner he owns the nhl team i often say that the only reason anyone wins the stanley cup is because someone has to right that's not always the case in recent years like i don't think you can fluke your way into winning two in a row and we had tampa do that and we had florida do that those guys earned it vegas 2023 as a recent expansion team herculean right
Starting point is 00:20:22 this is an example of that in a respectful way to the hurricanes okay and in a disrespectful way to their owner this guy is cheap he's a cheap billionaire and he hired eric tulsky eric tulsky from everything i've ever heard is one of the lowest paid if not the lowest paid gm i think only vancouver will undercut what the carolina hurricanes pay he's for what he for what he has done in carolina he he's probably the lowest ranked general manager in terms of pay around the league to win a cup oh without question he's probably the lowest paid general manager to win a cup since the 90s yes like that's yeah and listen it's good salary compared to what like average people make but it ain't great and he and rod brindamore didn't leave
Starting point is 00:21:22 because of loyalty to the team a lot of coaches would have been like why am i even fighting you on this and just blown that popsicle stand and gotten out of there but he stayed and fought for his staff um eric tolsky assembled a young energetic i'm willing to bet cheap front office that turned out to be one of the best and brightest in the sport and they assembled a stanley cup champion that was 12 million dollars under the salary cap and that all happened because tom dunnan is a genius no it's tom dunnan was right he would take that and go see why are we spending to the cap although he's always willing to spend on players i will give him that always he fell ass backward into it and you're right the one thing like you cannot cannot argue with
Starting point is 00:22:13 is he hired right hired eric tolsky you friggin nailed it 10 out of 10 you should sign that guy to a lifetime contract hired don waddell who hired eric tolsky but hey listen that's yeah that is there's still nothing wrong with like he can take credit for that steve yeah absolutely he can but his wife can't no probably not and his five children cannot no and i don't know why they're being dragged into this i feel so yucky he did i just feel yucky about this okay imagine adam you're a lifelong leaf fan i am leafs win the cup this year uh-huh and they're like adam for your years of support we're putting you on the cup i would be i would say no thanks i politely decline would it would you feel anything you didn't earn it you're not on the leafs i'm not on the leafs
Starting point is 00:23:06 my kid is for sure not on the leafs the owner is six years old the owner should be on the cup i can the owner should 100 and i would say that i would say here you know what else i would say because he's married it's a family-owned team right family assets are owned okay i can even see his wife on the cup i could totally okay okay i am i'm a reasonable man i'm good with that despite all evidence i'm a reasonable man i i'll take that his kender gardner is not his dependence did not win the stanley cup and no contribution to what happened in the national hockey league no and by the way it's an honor seven lines before it hits the players by the way seven it's an i think that's how it always works though it's the staff and
Starting point is 00:23:56 then the players okay they're not the staff yeah yeah they are they're not the staff oh yeah i win the stanley cup and i put max on it it's my dog but i'm the owner and i can just do whatever i want because nothing matters someone should try and put their dog on the they should i'm sure they have who's uh you know what i've always been very suspect of steve spot i know who you are i would like to know who is in charge of approving that list and who it went through and they gave the thumbs up and then they handed that list to the engraver and the engraver is like okay i just got to do this list it's the same i guess that's not the commission the same person who didn't tell him no when he said the two-way players are not going on the flight but
Starting point is 00:24:41 even at the hockey hall of fame or the nhl who does that go through when it reaches dundon he's like i want to put tag in on it my my child and then he hands that to someone i assume somebody hands that to somebody at the league and then they give that to the hockey hall of fame who there is just like yep this is fine why isn't there some sort of somebody in the way that can stop this why is this tradition that we have why is our greatest hockey tradition being run like this because nobody has the fucking balls anymore yeah that's why why aren't all the files released it's written in the law that you have to do it nothing fucking matters i don't think that's what we're talking about no no but it's just an example of why nothing fucking matters
Starting point is 00:25:25 i think i think in this particular case um gary it's a law it's a law sorry gary i think in this instance is um it's like it's like what happened with infantino and trump with the red card right and i think it's just tom dundon win the uh peace award no i i think what it is is that like these guys are so rich and so powerful that i don't even think the commissioner can control them anymore and what i what i hope happens is that the other owners who are all extraordinarily competitive with each other give him shit for this forever like i hope they openly make fun of because i've heard that those meetings sure they already do when they get together i've heard that they can be quite contentious and i i hope a guy like jeremy jacobs i'm relying on you jeremy
Starting point is 00:26:14 i'm relying on you tough guy all right i need you here i need you to say something you need to shame this no he's just there to you know what listen yell at the there's something there's something that needs to come back and that's public embarrassment there is a listen i'm not talking about canceling people forever i'm talking about you did something stupid and we should all laugh at you and that's what this is this is stupid and we're laughing and you can walk around and go well i've got billions and i got the couple what do you have and you're right you're so right it's still really fucking embarrassing canes fans know it's embarrassing everybody around the national hockey league knows it's embarrassing the people that work for you and assist you tom know that it's
Starting point is 00:26:53 embarrassing the only person who doesn't is you and that's fine if you want to live in that world that's cool but i'm just saying it's really embarrassing you know how like they didn't have to give it to nick delorier but they did they could have just as easily done that to six other people yeah who have put blood sweat and tears into the carolina hurricanes organization okay fine let's take his wife out of it maybe it's five maybe two of his kids were stick kids and they did a great job picking up garbage in the concourse and you can put them on there's three more names two or three more names you could have thrown on there and you didn't what it doesn't mean anything to your children that they are on the stanley cup not yet what do you mean not yet
Starting point is 00:27:45 maybe the only time it'll be a bit of a flex the only time it a flex of what yeah it shouldn't mean any if they have any integrity in their entire life that should be an embarrassment well it's graffiti yeah you guys are clearly my name is graffitied into the stanley cup you didn't fucking do anything yeah then everybody should be laughing at you behind your back you guys don't watch next gen nyc clearly okay i don't know maybe they're delusional and they believe that oh look how cool it is as a flex everyone's laughing at you yes that yeah so i don't like i understand this is not disrespect to canes fans at all who are among the most passionate in the league no no you have to listen you have to differentiate because nuance is dead
Starting point is 00:28:27 and no one understands i think people are smarter than that i think our audience is smarter than that when this inevitably gets clipped they will not understand there will be jesse i used to think like so many lickers of boots so many lickers of boots who go out on on instagram and are like you don't know tom like i know tom i'll tell you man is that a thing you think people i don't think people listen buddy billionaires oh people will you think he's splurging on bots oh he tried to erase information from his wikipedia page yeah but adam that could have cost it could cost like 50 bucks well anyway it's true this is embarrassing it's it's sad because what should be what we should be focusing on and what we'll get back to is the great celebrations that are going to be
Starting point is 00:29:08 happening with the cup in people's backyards i think they got a couple trips to europe to make i think nick ehlers is one of them it's a it might be the did he make it onto the cup he did he did they squeezed him in there yeah no no they did is aho on the cup i saw him i saw him he was on line like six kandre miller is he there i don't know i don't know he just got there what What about Tegan? Miko. Miko. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:31 Second line. Anyway, what? Look, they no one who didn't accomplish anything should be on the Stanley Cup. Like, yes, I'm a Leafs fan,
Starting point is 00:29:45 right? Who desperately wants one day for my team to win this thing. I hold this in so much reverence because it is still a fantasy to me. And you're over there just graffitiing it. Okay, so utterly desecrating. I think the greatest trophy in sport. The Aaron Ward tweet now makes more sense. I can explain it in a second.
Starting point is 00:30:05 Go ahead, Jesse. No, go ahead. Okay, well, Aaron Ward obviously played for the Canes. I think won the cup there. Bobby Gorman is a longtime equipment staff guy. He's a longtime equipment trainer. So he's been there a long, long time. Since the 70s.
Starting point is 00:30:20 And all the PR staff are not on there either. Come on. Come on. No, but you're... And some of you... Not even the head of PR. Some of you might be listening to this and going, yeah but what did they do a lot more than the kids a lot i mean the pr staff there don't work
Starting point is 00:30:33 as hard as the ones in toronto too but you know i don't know they still deserve it they still deserve it head of pr does for sure anyway where i thought it was really cool to see tyler dello's name there just to cap this on a good note where like if the names were actually uh the names that should be there and dundon didn't make this this topic about himself i think that'd be the lead it would be like that's really cool because all of us know tyler dello as just the guy from 15 years ago and we were all just reading his tweets and his blogs and now his name's on the damn stanley cup that's really cool that's what i want to highlight listen i would tell him this and he'd be like you're right steven but years and years ago it was generally agreed upon tyler's brilliant
Starting point is 00:31:22 no one's gonna hire him because he's too much his bedside manner is awful yeah yeah no i mean that in a complimentary way if tyler hears this like for sure he was belligerent and did not get along with others he was like house yes you ever why haven't they fired house well because he keeps discovering cures if house was a mediocre doctor he would have been fired that's right take your cane and get out of here if you remember tyler was in edmonton when they made the hall for larson trade yes and it was it was him who recommended no i'm kidding he was the one that said you cannot do this they did it and then they said he's got to go well he had a story he had all his spats with the edmonton media they hired him and they're like fuck this guy and then the oilers let go of
Starting point is 00:32:11 them and they went yeah fuck that guy and now he's on the cup well he went i think that's spectacular there was a there was a thing back in the day that you you had a shirt that said bloggers be getting paid i did and it's kind of funny how it's worked out because a lot of them we used to say on the show the running joke was never give up on your dreams you too can be an nhl general manager and oh yeah he and dello are bloggers man do you know how many people i know from like random shit posts from like 2012 we're working for teams are like they're on the stanley cub now yeah and here we are and here we are complaining about people who are on the sand we are just being just the same as we always wear t-shirts and shorts you know what i'll take it sitting next
Starting point is 00:32:58 to hayden yeah i'll take my job honestly but yo okay piece of crap jesse i want to ask you this sorry i want to ask you this um does it feel to you perhaps like um the eric tulsky playing here is do a really good job win a stanley cup wait till the contract expires toronto harvest because to me whatever he's making and i know he's underpaid if i'm him i'm just waiting for that contract to expire and then i'm going wherever who wants to pay me the most you've won a stanley cup you can john tortorella won a stanley cup when i was in high school and has continued to work since that's a coach but everybody's like he's a stanley cup winner pete laviolette won the cup the year i graduated high school 2006 with the carolina hurricanes
Starting point is 00:33:53 or is that 04 i was about to say i couldn't even tell you who he did it with he has continued to work just got a new job this summer eric tolsky's gonna be able to work uh yeah jesse i think so if you're eric tolsky do you hope to extract that money from your current ownership group or do you go start again elsewhere i don't know if the culture in carolina is that where i'm gonna go chase after a bag i think as long as rod brindamore is there doing what he's doing where i think when he's done coaching the hurricanes he'll never coach any other nhl franchise again he'll be coaching 14 year olds triple a hockey instead of an nhl team and i think eric tolski probably believes the same way and i think there's a buy-in from top down in terms of those guys actually
Starting point is 00:34:39 running the organization and not tagging that that's their attitude toward this thing and i think tolski is just there in for the long haul i i will say after letting their owner have it everything i've heard about the hurricanes tremendous buy-in tremendous culture yeah that's great i think they're gonna be good for a while you go to guys like jacob slaven who makes no money for what he is in terms of his skill level six million dollars is not what jacob slaven do but that's just what he's happy with because he's content with his life and his beliefs believe that he this is how much he should be making and he's one of the best defensemen that's what he's gonna do every day of the week yeah so i feel like all of them just
Starting point is 00:35:17 have this thing where they truly believe in what they're doing as a team and it's led to a stanley cup and i think they're just gonna keep riding until it doesn't work could they even sign in free agency anyone i don't think they got anyone can i give tom dundee some credit they got eelers last year but can i give him some credit it is a remarkably stable front office remarkably stable like even when don waddell left it was we have our replacement in house thank you very much that should be applauded here that should be applauded adam let me win gold in the back pedal olympics even if he's not a complete cheapskate who runs his team with his weird ego even if he's the best owner in the nhl it's weird that he put his wife and five children on the
Starting point is 00:36:03 stanley yeah but i think it's also we already said that yeah so what i'm saying is like it is a remarkably it is a remarkably steady front office in terms of it is they don't fire people a lot they don't freak out a lot things go wrong they fix it like i have to give them credit there that's a credit to the people who work in the front office and not and who hired them steve you have to give credit there you have to sorry a cheapskate yeah okay cheapskate but he created it he helped he was the basis they he writes the checks yes he writes the check he could he could walk in there today fire them all yes so he deserves credit for not doing that and hiring them in the first place no adam i don't deserve credit for not burning this building down in the
Starting point is 00:36:47 middle of this what are you talking about wrong people though what are you no no you got okay you're purposely ignoring my real argument no no i think you could give somebody credit for going hey i think this is the right guy for the job and he's cheap i'm not gonna say into a mic today that tom dundon deserves any credit i am also saying i will say that he deserves credit i think he's a i will say his kindergarten kids do not he's the only member of his family maybe his wife who deserved to be on the Stanley Cup yeah i think i think a husband wife owner group makes sense also he did sell i thought this is an interesting wrinkle before we move on he did sell a piece of that that team for for some equity shares uh earlier this year none of those people made the
Starting point is 00:37:28 cup oh for god's sake so the other owners of the hurricanes not on the cup the deal probably didn't close yet or something he's like oh yeah no i bet yeah i don't know if i don't have to do it i'm not gonna do it but jesse he's a majority owner he can tell them to fly oh you don't like it i'm the majority owner you're outvoted you know how you can listen to a drake song and tell immediately he wrote this one like i look at the names on the stanley cup i'm like that is directly from tom tunney he wrote this one sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use
Starting point is 00:38:06 my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and they're way around on that it's like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well Hang on a second. What if I don't want to? I don't have the stuff because you've got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing. The chemicals. You've got to have the right chemicals. See, that's what I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:38:24 That's why I used TaskRabbit and I employed a tasker. Here's the thing. TaskRabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly, home repairs, lawn maintenance, mounting, window cleaning, all that stuff. Here's the deal. 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled, 700,000 home repairs, 1.5 million moves and counting. Go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list, $15 off your first task at TaskRabbit.ca or on the TaskRabbit app using the promo code DANGLE.
Starting point is 00:38:53 Taskers across Canada book up fast, especially for same-day tasks. Get $15 off your first task right now with the promo code DANGLE at TaskRabbit.ca or the TaskRabbit app. You should download that, TaskRabbit.ca, code DANGLE. Okay, moving on. The New Jersey Devils offer sheeted Barrett Hayton for $4.775 million. dollars um the uh compensation would have been a second round pick but utah yesterday decided to match the offer sheet and bill armstrong uh had this to say about it and i think this is relevant when it comes to the ducks because that by the way we need to we'll be able to find that out i
Starting point is 00:39:31 think by the end of today i think the opportunity was or tomorrow tomorrow which sucks for us but whatever bill armstrong says he had no hard feelings uh between the organization and hayden and new jersey he said it's just business players want to get paid they want to make as much money as they can in their lifetime we get it no hard feelings between us in new jersey we called them and said we're going to match there's no hard feelings between the club and barrett hayden we have good relationships with the players the players agent and also new jersey there's good there's no hard feelings it's just business it's part of the nhl it's part of the cva uh we have to respect the process would you say that it's just business it's it sounds like it's
Starting point is 00:40:05 just business it might be okay it could be something else but right now it seems like it's just business so don't you think it's distinctly like it is distinctly different from what we're hearing out of anaheim which is i don't know if the relationship between carlson and verbeek will ever be the same yeah and and i'm not surprised by that there's a difference of over 85 million dollars there's also a difference of personalities man yeah yeah what did they call verbeek when he played a little ball of hate but remember and you can be forgiven for forgetting this because this happened during one of our remote episodes during covid oh which we all forget because everything we hated it how did we do that i
Starting point is 00:40:44 i don't know uh begrudgingly yeah um we had katie strang on oh yes oh yes and that feature she wrote in the athletic oh yes about bill armstrong being a bit of a naughty boy being a bit of a pain in the ass well or no it was about morello i think morello morello than armstrong there was like a bill armstrong subplot right also cantankerous pain in the ass he's he's he's got some uh some onions in his oats he can be he can be cantankerous i think you kind of have oh yeah i don't blame him for that i i mean i don't i don't know what happened in the story i can't remember the story but i do remember he was involved i just remember him being a brash that's that's all i remember so uh uh i i can imagine him being i mean by all accounts sunny meta sent this offer sheet
Starting point is 00:41:37 as an act of retaliation or out of an act of annoyance because uh bill armstrong cut off trade talks then he put in the 666 nanani boo boo and now bill armstrong's matching it and And I've been thinking about this too much like a computer because Barrett Hayden did not have a great season last year and the Utah Mammoth are paying him probably too much money and they're also risking losing him for nothing because now he's being walked to UFA. And he can't be traded. Yes.
Starting point is 00:42:11 And they're refusing the second round pick as return. Here's the human element of it. And I bet this is how Bill Armstrong is thinking. I'm not letting you do this to me. if you get him as a UFA next year, so be it. You're not getting him now and you're not getting him like this.
Starting point is 00:42:27 I think you're right. I think also the fact that you can re-sign him as of January 1st helps because it's not quite walking him to UFA because you can extend him if you really wanted to. You can keep him after January 1st.
Starting point is 00:42:41 I think that matters. I have heard, Jesse, that they don't like each other. Hayden doesn't want to be there anymore and they don't really like Hayden. There's definitely, you know when he says it's all business it's business but it's not comfortable i'll like you for four or seven million yeah i like it yeah actually i don't think the contract is too
Starting point is 00:43:00 unreasonable it's not too like if i was new jersey i'd be happy to be paying him that yes you know for this season i think he because he underperformed like the numbers don't look great but i think he can be that player what's their cap space at their cap space currently is 4.5 million dollars okay do they have anything cap space significant no i was just showing their lineup here uh it's pretty like it's pretty set yeah it's a good lineup if they went to the season with this they added to trochak lee yeah trochak seemed to be playing center i'm not really sure yeah the where they are i don't think we get too fussed about it but uh like hayden's probably going to be a winger unless you want to maximize the 4.7 million dollars and play him at center there for third
Starting point is 00:43:43 line but kosa he was a winger a lot of last year i think too but you know this is a guy who was a first round pick right fifth overall but it wasn't armstrong drew kept telling me by the way the producer drew kept telling me that he's a fantasy sleeper so i took him late rounds the last couple of years and he's been a fantasy no it would have been a bad decision last year this is why i'm not ignore drew ignore drew on fantasy but you have you have anders lee coming in you have trochek and you have casa like those are three different things that can really affect your lineup there because Vemelka played more games than anybody last season. Led the league in games played.
Starting point is 00:44:15 For the past two. For the past two seasons combined, he's played more games than anybody else. And Kosta's going to come in, I think immediately change that for him because there's a young goaltender who's going to try and make his way in the NHL. And I think he's going to,
Starting point is 00:44:28 now that he has an opportunity that he didn't have in Detroit, he's going to take a lot of those games away. And that could be just like found magic there for $2 million. Trojak's going to come in as like veteran. If he plays center or not, maybe plays wing a lot, But Trojans, I think, still has a good game in him. New York has given up on everybody, and then they're going to go somewhere on the West
Starting point is 00:44:46 and that side of the United States and play well, just like Trouba and everybody else they want to send out and Kreider as well. So I think that's a great add. Anders Lee, I think it was 36, but 5.4. Do we all think Anders Lee is cooked? No. I don't.
Starting point is 00:45:01 I think he's a very good player. I just don't think... I wanted the Leafs to get him, but now looking at who they got, I don't think he's got the speed for what they're looking for. But man, that guy's a great player. sorgachev didn't have a good year expect him to bounce back uh dylan genther's 23 he's gonna get better keller's uh on the wing there he's gonna have that really good line when him and schmaltz
Starting point is 00:45:19 found magic in the second half they were a good tandem there and then logan cooley too 22 years old he's gonna get better cooley's gonna be gross like i don't this isn't a bad team at all kraus is coming off a pretty decent season no they're they're gonna be good and i think it's more a human element thing uh i can't let you do this to me yeah yeah i think you're right like the ducks this is an existential crisis for them like that's how much money is at stake that's how much cap room is at stake that's the kind of player um this is a new gm screwing with you about a depth piece in your lineup no can i um no i mean i want to i want to transition to the ducks because i thought that would be a good lead in sure not a lot of meat on the bone with the
Starting point is 00:46:07 barrett hayton story it's kind of funny but like whatever the six six six it's it's less fun that they matched but yeah i think in the anaheim situation and i want to talk to ducks fans of which i am one okay i've been the anaheim booster first off the ducks are going to match this deal jesse and i are going to go back to san jose and you're not welcome if they don't that's true you guys know that i love the sharks you guys know that but i i called the ducks making the playoffs last year and i was right so therefore i'm inextricably tied to the ducks do you love the penguins and flyers as much no i didn't call them making the playoffs i was the number one penguins hater and they shoved it down my throat and i deserved it
Starting point is 00:46:44 that was one of the best calls you've ever had oh my god i was like unbelievable i was flabbergasted when you picked them by the way leo carlson and again i'm going to tell you guys this you don't have to believe me only at 67 points last year i get why you don't this guy is the next he is if if if he is the leon to connor he macklin will be number one leo carlson will be number two connor bedard will be number three i that is what will happen i know that's like really really high praise but everyone i'm seeing online talking about the amount of points he had last season i'm like you didn't watch no you didn't watch no that's why philadelphia is so pumped about him now i think they're gonna match this of course they're gonna match this because
Starting point is 00:47:26 the thing is you can't find a guy like this you can't even find them every year in the draft look at look at who went one two in the draft this year not a centerman yeah two wingers one and two it was uh it was caleb malhotra was third yeah but one one and two were not uh-huh like this is you can you can sink to the bottom of the league and not get a top line center right so they have to match this and they've got heinz locked up and they've got minchikov locked up and i know they don't have Cutter Gauthier locked up, but you can move other guys. We went through that. People are like, well, they're going to have to move Cutter Gauthier. No, you move
Starting point is 00:47:59 Killorn and Kreider. That's what you do. Beckett Seneca is up next year. They're going to have to worry about that. Is their defense decimated? Kind of. Do they have a really great history of drafting and developing defensemen at the Ducks? Absolutely. They're a factory, so I think they'll be okay. I think the original sin has already been committed. This is the
Starting point is 00:48:15 problem. I agree. The path forward that I see, you match. And now you have the rest of the summer to solve the Gauthier problem by losing a trade so hard. Oh, my God. Teams are going to be calling you off the hook, and you're going to have to choose the package that you lose the least. Yep.
Starting point is 00:48:41 And it's going to be Crider or Kalorin or Vetrano or all of them or two of them. If you're willing to attach a draft pick to Vetrano, just do that. Just do that. I don't. It might. It's time to take a step forward as the Ducks. The Ducks need to be in the playoffs every year now. I agree, but what's crazy is that might not be enough.
Starting point is 00:48:59 Okay, well, you could figure it out. Yes. It's a losing trade. You're right. But what you do is you give yourself, like, I don't know, two months to solve the Gauthier situation. Yep. And so I look at, I want to say this to the Ducks fans.
Starting point is 00:49:10 Ducks fans are mad because they feel like Leo Carlson didn't choose them. And I need you to think with your head, not your heart on this. Stop. On the last call, and we've talked, we told the story on the show before, but I'm going to tell it again. The last call that Verbeek and Leo Carlson's people had was the morning of the same day that he signed the offer sheet. The offer sheet was already in hand, but Leo Carlson's people said to Leo, listen, what do you want to do here? And he said, I want, let's do 15 mil. I think that's fair, right? And we know
Starting point is 00:49:45 that we've got the $18 million one in our back pocket, but let's do 15 mil because the Ducks drafted me and because i want to sign here long term and i want to stay here the 15 mil i think was supposed to be over eight years by the way oh my god and oh they went into this meeting knowing they had the offer sheet and pat for beak scoffed at them and said 12 million max buddy good luck and they signed the offer sheet that afternoon i want you to understand the difference between 12 12 million dollars and 18 million dollars or 18.8 million dollars you could get Like A.J. Greer and a million and a half dollars. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:50:24 You're talking about a guy who in the next five years, no matter where he plays, is going to make close to $100 million. I'm sorry. And if you say to me right now, well, I would choose the crap, you don't know, actually. You've never been presented with that opportunity to lift yourself and your entire family into a strata that would be unfathomable. You don't know what you would do. In fact, I think I know what you'd do because I know what I'd do. I'd sign the damn contract. And he is going to be the highest paid player in the NHL this year.
Starting point is 00:50:55 He is the no matter what, no matter what. Just like Mitch Marner, when he signed his deal in his fourth year, Leo Carlson, same thing, highest paid players in their fourth year, second contract. You take that deal 10 times out of 10. You don't know what's going to happen. You could get injured. You know, the economy could change. We could have another COVID.
Starting point is 00:51:15 You don't know. That'd be great. Sign the contract. make them make the decision and i think if leo carlson comes back and is exactly what leo carlson has always been and grows into what we all think he's going to be nobody's going to give a shit in six months if he goes to philadelphia and becomes that you're going to give a lot of shits but if he comes back to anaheim on this contract and he's unbelievable like he has been like he was in the playoffs when it matters the most you're not going to care remember how much nashville predators fans
Starting point is 00:51:47 hated shea weber i don't remember that steve that's funny that you mentioned yeah it's funny that i mentioned it because it never happened uh the flyers offer sheeted him preds matched he was still shea weber and then they traded him and uh he was shea weber right till the end and he was shea weber he was shea ethical retirement honestly yeah ethical like he was supposed to retired the year before i can't be shea weber anymore uh it's done people clowned nick kiprios uh for saying that shea weber's he said shea weber's probably not going to play next year he's a foot bad foot injury kipper wasn't wrong he was just early oh these guys are always playing through gruesome shit yeah right yeah like the point of contention from a few years ago was
Starting point is 00:52:34 marion host's retirement and oh he's got the skin condition well he had the skin condition and he retired exactly when his contract was designed for him to retire uh peter forsberg in the foot like these guys play through gruesome gruesome shit and they could all be justified probably retiring half a decade before they do that's why ltir always works yeah that's why ragko gutis is going to go on ltir and chris tana is going to go on ltir and like brofsky probably goes on ltir like yeah and you never hear from them again so uh i think the ducks are going to match i think that that would it would be stupid to do anything else nobody needs four low first round picks when you're where the ducks are you don't i hate to make everything about the least
Starting point is 00:53:18 but like this does feel eerily familiar why well just are you already panicking about gavin mckenna like no dan winnick no not like that at all but like i'm looking back at like this reminds me of 2019 you have this young group that's not ready but is kind of getting there they get some saves they score some goals their appointment view viewing they're super fun you know what your core is going to be for years going forward contract two comes along and you're just like holy moly how do we navigate this yeah and they gotta they gotta like you talk about the major pillars of this team they have not figured out carlson then they gotta somehow navigate the thing and then like you said next year is the beckett seneca thing and it's beckett seneca
Starting point is 00:54:14 had more points than leo carlson this year oh and you're just gonna be it's whack-a-mole yeah well you're running around trying to plug different holes in the boat yep and you're lucky the cap's going up it didn't for us yeah yes yes that is the massive massive difference acknowledge me said the elephant um now jesse do you remember when the leafs traded for darren radish four years ago if i'm just saying it feels like four years ago because oh i was i thought you were trying to hit me with some like trivia no no no underrated move that happened that he like came through a draft pick no i would have believed that they screwed that up yeah yeah yeah okay no no now i'm following you sorry i should have been more uh uh obvious about that it was
Starting point is 00:54:57 a fifth round pick they traded for him right yes yeah okay they're able to recoup that in the arson deal that's right thank god thank you ottawa don't worry we're getting smart things going on in ottawa yeah lots of good stuff yeah now i i wonder and alan's armchair i want to thank you on twitter for pointing this out you remember the people that were like that's a lot of money darren radish one good season that's a lot of money that's a lot of money yeah let me run you through some of the signings to rfa to ufa that have occurred since oh amy pavel minchikov 7.2 million dollars rfa man rfa how many years was that again i think it was five uh but i can look it up right now i don't think it is uh five would be no it's five 2031 oh okay okay that's not so
Starting point is 00:55:49 bad yeah and he hasn't earned trade protection by the way i don't think he's old enough jake true but ufa 8.25 million dollars i know which one now i like that deal for the sharks i'm one of the weirdos who likes that i think that's good oh yeah darren radish remember 8.5 million 70 points last year okay rasmus anderson who was atrocious for the vegas golden knights let's just call it what it was he was so bad i think he's better than that but he was bad and him having a training camp may help that bring it back that sort of thing i'm not saying he's cooked i'm just saying he sure didn't work in towards the system. He's not cooked.
Starting point is 00:56:24 He just looked at. Yeah. 8.5 million bucks. Rasmus Sanders. They're just handing that out. Bo Byram. $12.5 million. How do we feel about Darren Radish
Starting point is 00:56:37 not going to unrestricted free agency? Right shot, D-man, 70 points, bomb from the point, runs power plays. $8.5 million, dying to be in Toronto. you're bored by it no that's how i'm sleeping oh you're sleeping well i'm sleeping amazing my sleep apnea is gone i don't have restless leg i just i'm so not concerned about that cap hit especially with it going up at all he could underachieve every year and it'd be fine jesse i sincerely hope he doesn't do you think it was circumstance like luck or do you think
Starting point is 00:57:17 the Leafs were smart enough to go, hey, the market's probably going to turn here with the cap literally exploding. And we've been told about this for 24 months. Let's get some of our business done early. I think with the Darren Radice situation, there was somebody who wanted to be in Toronto. They needed a shakeup on their back end, and he was the guy available. The cap, it's good. But the risk that you're taking is, are you guaranteeing that he is the guy he was after he got the opportunity in Tampa. That's the part where people are scared about what he can be, is he came out with 70 points, something he's never done in his career,
Starting point is 00:57:51 and they're unsure if he can maintain that at that level. He's 30 years old, and they're signing him until he's 35, 36. So that's where the risk comes in. But in terms of the cap hit for the next couple of years, it's a very good cap hit for the guy who's going to be playing the number one defenseman role offensively. Again, I will ask, do you think the Toronto Maple Leafs thought, with foresight
Starting point is 00:58:11 that this market is going to turn and explode or do you think that it was just luck that they got it done? I think that was the number he was asking for. Well, I guess they gave him
Starting point is 00:58:25 the eighth year too. They could give him the eighth year. I think unique circumstance. Like he wanted to come here. Totally. Because they're going to be credited with, hey, you got it done before everybody else did
Starting point is 00:58:35 and the contract's exploding good for you. They deserve it. I don't think anything's ever that simple. like i don't think it's just like that it's the one line oh look at them they just nailed this contract i think there's so many things that we just talked about that went into him signing that deal here's here let's create a little time capsule does darren radish finish his contract
Starting point is 00:58:56 as a top three highest paid defenseman on the leaves no eight years from now no eight years no no no top four i i think if the cap keeps going up the way it is because the revenues are exploding talking to somebody in the states who's in business like sports business yesterday they're like you don't understand how big the nhl is getting here in comparison to what it used to be great that's great news you need to conquer the american market in order for the cap to go up the cap's going up i'm sad the states won the gold medal but also good for business as the fan of a cap team yeah maybe we sacrifice one and we just go okay yeah yeah my point nathan mckinnon big brain i i don't think he missed that net on purpose he's trying to get paid i don't think
Starting point is 00:59:41 he's in the top 10 or sorry in the top uh i don't think he's in the top four highest paid i don't i actually wasn't in the top 10 no i think like you look at the nba like you got bench players making 15 million bucks right like what did donovan mitchell sign for the other day i don't know it's like 70 million well there you go different circumstance yeah smaller bench i guess 12 12 guys on the team that are getting paid but all the same like i think i think that it's not like just like we know that you know second line centers used to be five million dollars and five million dollars used to be the contract of death because it was that mid-range where you're like i don't know that's a lot now a five million dollar centerman you're lucky if
Starting point is 01:00:16 he's your third line set tyler bozak got five and a half million from the blues and we were like they've lost their minds they've like what do you mean you gave them a raise on the 4.2 which was already and never pay yep and then they want to come yep yeah but no it's it's completely changed completely it used to be like eight million for like a 1a yeah and uh now if you're able to get a number one center in free agency which you're never able to do uh i'm guessing north of 13 well tavaris was 11 and that was eight years ago nine or eight years ago yeah it just it doesn't happen no it's if you if your answer to that is well what about this guy my response is that's not a number one center hasn't happened hasn't happened oh what about matt duchesne wrong
Starting point is 01:01:08 ryan johansson back in the day wrong i'm not talking about guys who can i'm talking about number one centers right which don tavaris when he signed that was a number one center absolutely undeniably yes and then he scored 47 free golf goals and the team did nothing dude eight and a half i'm i'm feeling great about it man that's good it's good now uh we got some some leafs news today steve sullivan's going to take over the marley's head coaching position as john gruden was promoted to jim hiller's staff john gruden being the head coach of the marley's when they won the calder cup uh there's also been some cuts in uh the analytics and uh assistant gm department um i heard significant yeah been announced yes well at least some of the major
Starting point is 01:01:59 names are very interesting dave morrison who's been there forever wow uh mark leach who they poached from dallas a few years ago oh i hate that yeah i hate that dude last year yeah and then they had him run the draft everyone across the board said it was a good one and now he's gone i think judd bracket ran the draft i think that's your sign that judd bracket ran the draft that's what i was told i was also told the judd bracket would be running the draft well i don't like losing mark leach i don't like his resume is exemplary um daryl metcalf and many from the analytics department according to terry koshan there's another uh hockey twitter og yeah they haven't updated their staff list on their website yet so no confirmation from the
Starting point is 01:02:43 Leafs just yet, but yeah, those people are gone. Oh, the Ducks have officially matched Leo Carlson. Hey! It happened during the show! It happened during the show! They didn't win the full seven. Yeah, no. It's a miracle.
Starting point is 01:02:59 What are you tweeting? I said, happened during the show. Adam's got to tweet. Got to get that out there. You saw that so fast. Adam, what are you doing? Adam's laptop tweeting. So, Daniel Alford said, Jesse, I'm going to highlight this thing oh we're not talking leo what leo oh well we just did okay well they matched him that's
Starting point is 01:03:18 great he is sort of right like well why are we not exhausted they got to re-sign cutter goche that's it so now okay we always talk about this with regard to the trades that lunatics at puck pd already have it upgrade they've already got it in unbelievable lunatics they've got nine million dollars in cap space they're going to be able to sign cutter goche no problem they're doing no problem they're gonna get he's more than nine million guys i i didn't say they were gonna sign him at nine million i said they're going to be able to re-sign him oh problem yeah yeah like they're gonna trade yes exactly well that sounds like a problem that's not you have to do a significant trade that's a problem not no problem because there are more transactions that they have
Starting point is 01:03:57 to make to fit cut our goat shade that's not enough yeah it's not enough money uh well and with trades that don't happen and this is kind of a trade um the flyers were willing to give four first round picks for leo carlson and the trade has fallen through what do they do now wave villi husso he makes 2.2 million no no no the flyers oh what are the i was like husso's a flyer no no no I think what they do is they just continue to take big swings. I think also Porter Martone is going to blow a lot of people away. Like I'm picking him in my fantasy this year. Like that guy's going to rock.
Starting point is 01:04:38 Yeah, you think? The Flyers have $29 million in cap space. Like they were doing this. I know he's got the shoulder injury, but Bedard's out there. Zegers does need a contract. Grabenkin does need a contract. Drysdale does need a contract. So that $29 million will be taken up by those three guys.
Starting point is 01:04:57 Bless you. rebenkin's gonna be yeah rebenkin's gonna be the highest paid out of those three easily easily double digits drysdale's gonna make way too much money but he's a right shooter he deserves it like he's gonna make more than risto i don't it was good i don't care what drysdale wants give him the money well you have the money it's gonna be very interesting that zegras and drysdale's agent can now walk into danny breyer's office and go 18 million huh i think that sounds like that money's burning a hole in your body
Starting point is 01:05:25 there Danny and you know what he would say I'm sorry your name's Trevor Zegers uh oh now Trevor Zegers
Starting point is 01:05:35 was great for the flyer side but you're not you are not you are not even close on that and also they'll have Mitch Kopp next year
Starting point is 01:05:42 to worry about I was just gonna I'm noticing if if the Ducks didn't match Carlson would be like almost
Starting point is 01:05:51 10 million more than anyone currently on the roster he'd be 10 million more than connect me yeah who's their highest paid player that's how much the cap's gone up and by the way that's how well they've managed their cap obviously you still have the guys you gotta sign like secrets is probably gonna be more than that and stuff same with dry still but like as it stands yeah carlson would be over 10 million more but like look at their center like that couturier contract is awful but it speaks to the flyers lack of guys
Starting point is 01:06:17 like leo carlson they needed that star who they can pay the double digits amounts to lead up their center depth and they don't have that guy and daniel breer to all his credit was going out and being creative and trying to find a way to get him tell me at 18 million dollars what reason would you not have to do the same thing to the to the blackhawks right now i would do that today i think you're making it easy on them i think by signing badar to that contract you're just allowing kyle davidson to go okay i matched it now i have badart signed what if you go 20 within half an hour what if you go 20 i think whatever it is he goes now i have badart yeah but you've Right now, currently, we could be in a situation where they're negotiating into his injury through training camp.
Starting point is 01:06:57 And I don't know when that'll get solved. Maybe he'll be signed tomorrow and I look stupid. I think you make it easy for Davidson by signing Bedard. The report is that they wanted Bedard between $12 and $13 million. That ain't happening. I also don't think Bedard wants to sign the offer sheet and do that to the Blackhawks fans who are probably going through it right now. i think it's it's it's a little more intense than carlson signing it than bedard's i think i just at a different level do you know why
Starting point is 01:07:27 blackhawks fans are going through it because kyle davidson's not good at it yeah because he's not good that's why yes yes 100 but i don't think bedard wants to call out davidson so bedard wants to sign up for three more like one of the hawks i think good i think privately yes those those things are happening but to the fan base and to the nhl as a whole i don't think bedard's doing that as a person publicly yeah okay i think we'll see one of you right the devil on his right shoulder yeah yeah left shoulder i think eventually badard goes and does the mcdavid thing or like the crosby thing
Starting point is 01:07:59 where it's like hey i'm your best player i'm not happy i want to win all the time let's do some winning here crosby went to a stanley cup final in year three yeah went to a stanley cup final on his elc if i'm not mistaken or maybe the year after one of the two he won a heart trophy as a sophomore right like yeah and that's a guy when when we were talking about Kyle Dubas needs to rebuild this thing Crosby's like I don't know I want to win I'm here to win you know so I feel like Bedard's same attitude as those guys best player in the league attitudes where it's I want to win and eventually he's gonna have to talk to Kyle Davidson about building a winning team because he hasn't done it listen Bedard Blackhawks what are we doing here who's gonna be the first to
Starting point is 01:08:39 do it who's gonna be the first to make a nice to philly rumor for what who's what does philly have 18 million no they have uh they have lots of young guys listen they just because it doesn't make sense doesn't mean no one's gonna say it right i think about you you think about who they're shopping knives for and it's like zach warrensky right i don't think the flyers have anything that the leafs want currently because they're looking to save austin matthews now yes now here's what's interesting about uh not the fact that it was matched but just the fact that there was a resolution now the league can get on with it like i it was crazy pace to this offseason and it was forced to slow down because that tied up an unbelievable amount of money and assets
Starting point is 01:09:30 like if you're trying to do business with the ducks if you're trying to do business with the flyers you can't you can't until you find out what the resolution is here if you were um making some sort of deal for vetrano or um friggin crider or cologne one of the guys they have to dump to make room for coach yeah yeah or anyone right like the the context of all those talks completely change right so i wonder what this does league wide are we now gonna see a flurry of oh okay well we got an answer there let's do this and this and i don't know if it'll be a flurry but okay can i give you guys a trivia thing i would like can i trivia you guys yeah sure okay okay who's the highest paid player on the blackhawks currently and how much they make so it's not
Starting point is 01:10:20 bedard um it's bo byram oh yeah there you go highest paid defenseman league he's got to be that he is not no because bo byron's extension doesn't kick in till the following year he's right oh i guess yeah he's he's six and a half um that counts spencer knight signed for a lot of money it wasn't that though i don't know jesse any guess who is it frank naser frank makes five point six point five nine million and that contract goes till 2033 which actually looks pretty good yeah that's a great piece of business when bedard signs if it's not 10 million more per season than frank nazar or nazar however he wants it to be pronounced um i think he should fire his agent or he should fire
Starting point is 01:11:14 himself bedard is the only thing happening for this team i know they love bo byram and spencer night was great but he will be if there's anybody leading them back to the promised land it's connor bedard if he agrees to 10 million dollars more than that i would that's still a deal i'd sign him and kiss him on the mouth what if he wants to win what if he's leaving the cap space well then he should sign the offer sheet with the flyers well okay because this is not going to do great for the allegations but the one team that is the biggest standout in the nhl in terms of uh guys who want money and guys who want to win the montreal holy smoking canadians yeah i've got more trivia from chicago though just so you know the demodov contract makes no sense it makes no
Starting point is 01:11:59 sense yeah in within the context of the rest of the 32 thoughts was like like i i think it was bukaskas asked him like uh do you think that he regrets that and he's like well listen you got to remember where he came from and you just put 75 million bucks in front of him no i don't think regrets it yeah i'm sorry elliot i love you i'm gonna disagree i think you absolutely there's a you have to say that to be like we didn't just sign away a lot of money but like what are you talking about he could have made 14 or 15 million anyone who doesn't have gordon and hughes as the executive of the year is doing it wrong this yeah oh yeah everyone's got canada on their no move clause and all the taxes are so
Starting point is 01:12:39 high in Quebec. And anyway, here's our entire young core. All signed to $45 and a box of blueberries. Yep. That's crazy. Who is the second highest paid player on the Blackhawks this season? I'm assuming Conor Bedard gets signed, but we leave him out of this. Who's the second highest? And by the way,
Starting point is 01:12:58 two people. Bo. Because he said Nazar's at six and he's at like six something, right? Bo's correct, but there's somebody tied with Bo. when did they sign they signed oh man that's a good question let me go back so it's not a new one they signed in 1920 are we counting who's their dead cab is it ryan ellis ryan ellis is that they're counting that yeah no way 6.25 million dollars last year of the eight-year deal oh i just thought that was funny yeah yeah and then is it spencer night and then it's spencer
Starting point is 01:13:32 night oh yeah yeah but they don't have anybody to pay that's what i'm saying yeah yeah bertuzzi's the fourth highest paid player on this team like it's crazy man it listen and i like i like tyler there was a world where like who knows maybe all their kids like super overachieve and now bedard's gonna miss like at least a month um landon dupont's supposed to be really good that's all i got for you blackhawks fans i'm sorry watch them go on like a crazy run this year they might yeah somebody one of us should pick them to make the playoffs just just to cover that base i did two years ago and you let me down chicago that's fair but i was also an idiot that's so uh here it here's the news if anybody didn't know the chicago blackhawks tweeted this
Starting point is 01:14:18 out this morning conor bedard underwent successful surgery to repair his left shoulder we expect him to make a full recovery in approximately uh four months is that the same shoulder that was a problem last yeah so i think what happened was they didn't have surgery last time and then he goes into his off-season training and he injures that shoulder and they're like okay now he actually has to have surgery and he's missing training camp too yeah not that he'll be he'll be fine but like damn it'll be a full recovery like he'll be good but it's just tough how many what's the over-under on wins in the first month without him for the blackhawks uh what was their record without him this past year with his jaw not good i could tell you that he was he was man he was
Starting point is 01:15:00 such a big part of my fantasy team him and leo carlson then they both got injured ah i feel bad for the fans i feel bad for the kid i know like four months recover like do you know like okay it's four months and he'll be fine in four months do you know how much work he has to do like we talk about the timeline we never talk about the work that goes into rehabbing an injury yeah rehabbing a major injury for for four months this guy is going to be in pain and uncomfortable his entire summer while trying to get better at his craft which is going to be a near impossible task yep like every well i talked about this years ago when jack eichel was battling the sabers and you know where he must be at mentally like pain fucks with you oh yeah every single time
Starting point is 01:15:52 you turn your head and your neck hurts you're going to be reminded about this fucking team that won't let you get that fucking surgery think of how angry he must have been remember that interview he did after where he was like shaking and couldn't get to the end of his sentence i don't blame him i don't blame him at all and conor bedard obviously this is different circumstance but think of how angry he must be like remember um you ever read that interview roman poleck did after he uh had the compound fracture in his leg from the capital oh yeah that was brutal him screaming on the ice i'll never forget screaming on the ice and like that summer like he's at home there's a toddler running around the house he can't fucking do anything yeah oh i'm sorry to
Starting point is 01:16:34 bum everyone out but like it's it's one of the it's one of the aspects um that no one really ever talks about yep just you know oh he'll he'll be back in four months and he'll you know all right get right back to scoring a point a game yep it's hard you you don't get to see the journey uh yeah so uh uh back to the leafs here because i did want to i i we talked about the cuts uh daniel alfredson joined the organization we know that we talked about that first off did you guys see that the leafs tweeted out a picture that alfie and sandina are teammates sure did that and uh sense fans love that alfredson said in his media veil that you know he said basically listen ottawa fans i'm always gonna love you but it's not like i could just stay here and get a
Starting point is 01:17:19 head coaching job eventually like you eventually do have to move and you've got a he could have gone anywhere though he's got the coaching bug well no maybe he couldn't i guess the leafs interviewed him to be head coach which is we did not know nuts uh he was one of the 55 i'm assuming they talk to um but you know it is going to be very very interesting uh to see how he does now that he's one of us we love him he's our boy um i i i completely understand why sense fans are are pissed about this and i get it a hundred but i also think sense fans are smart enough to know like yeah he probably wasn't going to be a head coach here right away but is he going to be a head coach here well no but it's it's a it's it's a promotion which they were not willing to offer
Starting point is 01:18:06 him in ottawa i believe it's he was assistant there and here he's associate so i think that's move up i think there's technically an a promotion there also he wanted to change yeah here's here's his opening statement that adam's referring to where he talks about yeah that just didn't come into toronto him being surrounded by blues is weird i don't know please there you go yeah go Go for it. That's some more thoughts. Thank you. Sorry I can't be there in person today.
Starting point is 01:18:34 I'm back home in Sweden. But first up for everything they've done for the team, the city, and myself and my family, Steve and the coaching staff. I've caught the coaching bug, which I'm very happy about. Keep up the good work and what you started there. Also to the Ottawa fans, love you as always. thank you i understand this but also an exciting chapter for me as i expand my coaching career jim and uh and his uh coaching staff and be part of uh toronto so uh that's it thank you next we'll
Starting point is 01:19:12 open up your question so i think the important thing there is he wanted to expand his coaching career aha i'm so distracted by the fact that a bush just magically appeared in the window behind him kind of funny what the hell is going on with his camera yeah the wi-fi terrible like rewind the the landscape behind him no it was materialized it's it's it's his it's something oh it's a canopy cover yeah they just move the canopies yeah yeah it's just uh it's just an awning somebody's outside in the backyard and they're like i want more sun yeah so they put up they put up the awning it like wasn't loading or something you see there's the awning and it's coming up and down uh i wouldn't notice if i had my glasses on that's it's still odd
Starting point is 01:19:55 as it like loaded and rendered like you're going too fast in red dead redemption that's crazy hey as a rule it's um 2026 audio and video like that is unacceptable he's in sweden they don't have microphones in sweden that is by the way the way we have to treat daniel alfredson now oh yeah he was the best guy around we should have broken stick night at scotia bay yes what about what he did to darcy tucker what talker we always loved elfie what are you talking a hundred percent favorite player growing up and apparently sundine had they're saying there's speculation that sunday did something to do with it but then i heard that he must have they kind of know each other but they don't like they've kept in touch he said alfredson's like medalists
Starting point is 01:20:45 yeah but i don't think they're like friends like people are i think people are putting too much on that i think this is a guy and bruce gariak said it and a few other people this guy that wanted to change he wanted to go and so does travis what's travis green think of this leafs legend travis green he's just probably grumbling in a corner somewhere which even when things are going well travis green's grumbling in a corner somewhere but uh he's just a kind of guy um it is a gut punch to the Sens in a symbolic way, do I think it makes... I mean, because he's going to run the Leafs power play, which was awful
Starting point is 01:21:19 last year. Does it make an appreciable difference to the Senators on the ice? I doubt it. No, no. In reality, this means nothing in terms of like the, oh, he's a Senator for life and now he's being a Leaf. Like, okay. Yeah. In reality. I mean, he was a Red Wing too, Jesse. Yeah. But like
Starting point is 01:21:36 everybody in the NHL is from the NHL and worked in the NHL and they all played for teams and they're all bouncing around. like it's fine you'll get over it yes but like also i think we agree that like matt sundin coming back feels right you know like for a team that was looking for a bit of a culture change this is a team that just lost their captain in brady kachuk and they're losing like a big part of their history like with him leaving the organization i don't think the history is still the history the history is still the history but the history now works for the rival but it's not there
Starting point is 01:22:11 everything i think eventually you got to transition to okay it's nice that he's a walking statue of what was the past but he's also just a person who wants a job yeah and you eventually need to get over that that he just wants to work in with the nhl and he's going to go to different markets because this is what you got to do as an assistant coach and he's no longer just your little trinket that's hanging around the arena and he's just a person looking for the right job for himself yeah it's wild that it's the Leafs yeah yeah and he's just he's just not in the position where it's like okay Iserman was GM of the Tampa Bay Lightning right and everyone's like oh well nobody was sitting there being like oh that's a Red Wing but he's working for Lightning but eventually he got
Starting point is 01:22:52 to a position where he could choose the job he wants and he goes to the Red Wings and he does that but Alfredson's still working his way up here uh-huh he's not head coach I can pick any job I want to run the Senators he's an assistant and he didn't get a head coaching job and he just wants to work his way up that's what he's doing it's wild let him be a person i know like let's let's detach him from that let the history be the history it's not going anywhere the whatever trophies you won and all the goals that were scored are still there the guy came let him have a job he came back he did the very next day like he came he's come back a couple of times he couldn't handle it under melnick because no one could except for pierre dorian you know what's
Starting point is 01:23:30 gonna be completely wild is when jesse is in the building for the home opener when they announce the whole staff and they're gonna be like associate it's gonna be mike ross on the mic associate coach daniel alfredson and scotia bank arena is gonna be like yay question mark oh no i think oh it's gonna be he gets the loudest paw as a dig at sense fan yeah like if we fans are smart that's what you do like jim hiller is it's been like yay daniel alfredson people are yeah well everything has kind of gone bad for them since they said the matthews is leaving chant to us and you know i don't think that sense fans really deserve it on the on the whole because they've had a lot of shit thrown their way and probably one of the worst owners in sports
Starting point is 01:24:19 history oh with melnick yeah yeah yeah and lauer's great neat chant get wrecked neat chant um so yeah alfredson will be running the power play as we mentioned last episode uh the senators had the eighth rank power play yep yep yeah we didn't know last episode what his role would be specifically yeah it's good that we found out it's going to be the power play did you want to bring up uh the leaf's incredible free agent signings what do you mean oh william villeneuve no the thing that i sent you uh so i don't know what it is oh okay this is great okay so you want to bring up something hold on yeah so uh in the midst of learning about all the leafs front office changes today which i don't know if we still know them all not all not all of them um there's a letter
Starting point is 01:25:07 that went out um to people who work within mlse okay from keith pelly this is something that he does uh fairly regularly and the leafs have done a number of things recently and he wanted to talk to his mlse employees about the things that his team has done jesse can you put the the letter on the screen hey thank you i haven't seen this maple leafs makeover continues with free agency additions and then he writes about all the things that the leafs did in the off season and right next to me you see Sergey Bobrovsky across from him there's Jack Roslevic then there's Nick Paul and who's that up at the top featured most prominently Corey Perry who is very much not a Toronto Maple Leaf he signed with the LA Kings he's a king again why did they put Corey Perry
Starting point is 01:26:02 I don't know for the same reason that he called him Michael Hagee and the same reason that he talked about vinnie borghini keith pelly doesn't know what he's talking about bless him for hiring chica who seems to have done a decent job so far right i'm on board with so much that has happened recently yeah he loves why is cory perry on this and keith pelly loves an intro office email let me tell you i worked we worked we all three of us worked for the man and i could tell you not like obviously he was several rungs above us but you guys i think we've told this story but i'll just mentioned quickly remember the happy keith and the sad keith emails yeah yeah so basically rogers execs used to have a picture beside uh like on every email there'd be a heading and it'd be a
Starting point is 01:26:48 picture of the executive sending the email and then the email and when it was happy news like the rogers grabbing the the rights to the nhl away from cbc and tsn there was happy keith yes on that but when it was layoffs time it was serious or sad keith somber sullen sullen keith i would even say end uh the uh the best part about it is we mostly got sullen keys on the era that you worked there did you want to read it yeah that's what i was doing what did you say so it says who do they think who do we think that they think it is the headline is maple leaf's makeover continues with free agency additions from the draft so the previous page this is page three of the doc you received uh page two was about the draft so it continues from the draft john and matt's turn
Starting point is 01:27:36 their attention to free agency having already cleverly picked off the best defenseman available through a trade with tampa for defenseman darren radish i think they think it's darren radish i think they oh yeah yeah they're like that guy's in a tampa jersey shoots right-handed it's darren radish oh my goodness so having already cleverly picked off the defenseman best defenseman available through a trade with Tampa for defenseman Darren Radish. That is poorly worded. Even with that acquisition in advance, the Maple Leafs were the most active team in free agency. Like the draft, the new hockey operations team demonstrated a well-planned and executed free agency strategy, focusing on the top goalie available in Florida, Sergey Bobrovsky, and
Starting point is 01:28:20 strengthening our depth and character with some very strategic acquisitions that will play a role in supporting our top six forwards while completing, transforming our third and fourth lines next season. Holy cow. You know what that reads like? Can you? Can you?
Starting point is 01:28:35 I'm not going to say it. Adam or Jesse, what does that read like? A Rogers intra-office email. That's corporate bullshit right there. That's the stuff I'm trying to run away from. That's not where I was going. Jesse, what does it read like?
Starting point is 01:28:47 No, go ahead. Oh, Hayden. It's AI. No. It reads like AI. I can point out AI writing from a mile away. We use Riverside for recording stuff. And it does like a back end.
Starting point is 01:29:06 Like it tells you like breakdown of everything that was talked about. And it does a decent job. This reads exactly what an SDP free agency thing that Riverside would spit out from its AI. Like this looks almost verbatim from something. Do you agree with Steve that it's AI? It looks almost identical to the stuff I look at on AI. Also, if you're an MLSC employee, what are the chances you don't know this already?
Starting point is 01:29:32 They're all, everyone I've ever met. They're psychotic fans, all of them. They are the most hardcore fan and the best actors in the world because they are able to be like, hello, welcome to the game. And inside, they are just absolutely fucking vibrating because they're like, oh my God, it's game five tonight.
Starting point is 01:29:52 yeah why else would you accept a job where you paid 30 less than your market value yeah you're a fan no one applying there's like i heard you guys have a hockey team no one applying there's like hey i heard you pay well nobody yes no no one is there for the pay i don't work at mlsc who are big basketball fans you sorry i know people who work at mlsc who are primarily basketball fans of the teams they're fans they're primarily like a raptors fan and like hockey well that's what i'm suggesting i'm also no but so like you're saying like oh they're fans of the team so they should know this but i'm saying like they could be a raptors fan and not know the most about the leafs i understand it doesn't look like i mean they only mentioned radish and bobrovsky there
Starting point is 01:30:35 too they don't mention that there's like eight other guys yeah and they highlighted jack ross the vick and nick paul and cory perry cory perry they picked four people at random and one of them is wrong babrowski is the only person mentioned in the text who is shown in the pictures well there it is uh uh keith is the best um just the best so this one's interesting and this is oh sorry i was just scratching my shoulder because i got hair up there and i tried to try to shave it off and then it's growing back and now it's itchy again you know you know what happens got it no i don't i'm gonna go with the wax this time this next time um got it dan milstein called out frank servali on twitter and frank called him back
Starting point is 01:31:25 and you know sometimes we don't do a lot of twitter drama but this one was noticed notable because it's one of the sports major agents and it's one of the sports major insiders so um nhl rumor report quoted from canuck central and this is frank speaking on canuck central after the leo carlson offer sheet came down mitchikov's agent dan milstein was literally calling teams to ask them if they would be willing to put an offer sheet in so the day carlson was signed to the offer sheet i had heard that mitchikov was already given an offer that's what i've heard too yes and also if dan was doing that i mean he is an agent that that's his job literal job but anyway dan said busted wide open turns out my day job is calling gms and begging
Starting point is 01:32:16 for offer sheets on my own guy then hiding it so well that apparently nobody noticed except for some insider appreciate the investigative work really pulitzer season is incoming hashtag we all we are gold star well and then crying with laughing emoji rolling eyes emoji which is basically like just an act of war now frank not one to sit one out on this one because like most but most people like ah frank frank called him out frank is the hockey twitter version of south park's interpretation of russell crowe so you know what i like doing on hockey tv uh frank said hi dan i wasn't criticizing you merely reporting a fact that you called a team to team to solicit an offer sheet for your client hashtag you get a gold star did this i have to say that's a good
Starting point is 01:33:05 chirp now that's good had he left it there i think it's great but he said did i strike a nerve by the way i never knew that you could be considered a best-selling offer author by self-publishing bravo no what does that part mean that tweets too long yeah i think the first two lines were yeah i love a good chirp fest it's good to be concise you're good hashtag you get a gold star that's devastating leave it there leave it right there okay what is the second line about do you understand did he write a book i don't i did not aware of millstein's author history no it's in reference to i think it's in reference to millstein saying like this is pulitzer level and he's like well i self-published because it's twitter i don't get it oh yeah he did no i think
Starting point is 01:33:51 he's literally taking a dig at yeah dan writing a book dan did write a book oh dan wrote oh i had no idea 17 cents in a dream my incredible journey from the ussr to living the american dream published in 2013 was it a bestseller yeah he well no because so this the dig is milstein in his bio on twitter says best-selling author so frank is taking a dig at him writing that in his twitter bio by saying i didn't know you could be a best-selling author by self-publishing your book because his book was self-published. See, the chirp you have to explain are less exciting.
Starting point is 01:34:23 If it's true, isn't it? Right. That's more impressive. Yeah, it wasn't a good thing. No. Cut it at hashtag you get a gold star. That's devastating. That's great writing.
Starting point is 01:34:32 Leave it. Is that our feedback for Frank? Just fire it out the one. Yeah. The one is good. You got to just make it snappy. Also, it's... To make this really hit.
Starting point is 01:34:40 If you have to explain the joke or the chirp. Yeah, boo. Yeah. But anyway, Dan left the USSR in the wake of the chernobyl disaster i did not know that and he arrived in the u.s with 17 cents i will read that book this summer that actually sounds very interesting yeah that sounds like a great book yeah thanks i might check that out should we get dan to plug his book yeah hey dan you want to come on and plug your book listen it's thank you frank it's you know what you should do
Starting point is 01:35:04 a part two it's been 13 years i'm sure he's got some stories just do hashtag we are gold star yeah hashtag you get a gold star hashtag uh just to circle back on frank's original report is that millstein was calling teams to ask if they'd be willing to put together an offer sheet so that that's what frank was reporting like that doesn't seem like that doesn't seem crazy i don't understand there's a lot i don't understand in this exchange i don't understand why dan would be like how dare you i i would expect if even if dan didn't do it i would expect him to do it yeah like hey hey yeah you reported that i was doing my job and i just like to say i wasn't yeah it's july frank i was chilling i expect what dan millstein to be on the phone
Starting point is 01:35:52 with gm yeah yeah so frank reporting that he was calling teams to see if they had an offer sheet i'm like yeah i don't know what does he do all day call gm to ask them about contracts for his client actually actually i didn't go and call a bunch of guys they came to me or something i don't get it i don't get that i don't get that why did both parties here get offended well and like if you're offered an offer sheet you don't have to sign it so like he could have in theory i'm not saying i've heard this or anything but in theory uh pick a name out of a hat that team could have offered minchikov like seven mil for five years he can then go to pat for b it can be like here's the offer i have on the table match it yeah yeah or beat it
Starting point is 01:36:39 I assume that happens all the time. I think I would call that great work. And he's refusing. How dare you? I think you described his job description. I don't understand what the fucking big deal is. And if he pulled that off, I'd be like, hashtag, you get a gold star. You know, at free agency, they had their lawyers and everything drop contracts.
Starting point is 01:37:00 And then they drew up contracts for his clients. And then they signed them. No. And then Frank reported that. And Milstein got offended. Nah, I don't think it's... Let's release a statement. What we need now is for Frank to come out
Starting point is 01:37:14 and be like, actually, I never reported that. Yeah. I also didn't do my job. I think what we're seeing here is this Twitter beef, this public Twitter beef doesn't make a lot of sense for either side. And is that fair? Yes.
Starting point is 01:37:30 And it's an important lesson in hockey Twitter because if you get into a spat, Frank's been in dozens of these. Yeah. but a lot of them are in the vet yeah but a lot of them get buried in the winter because there's so much news going yeah yeah you can be the main character in july i'll never forget the julius honka wars oh my god much blood was spilled oh the julius over the julius honka outrageous and you know we got on the air and made fun of that yeah people are like you guys don't understand
Starting point is 01:38:00 how great julius honka is going to be how many games of julius honka have you seen in the nhl exactly yeah and some of you are like what are you unks talking about and you are the blessed ones yes yeah i am not we're not rehashing that nope but when you make a big fuss in july yep it nothing buries it nope i think just advice for frank if you're going to chirp somebody don't bring up their very impressive book yeah that's what i now kind of want to read that's not really a chair oh i hear you got all straight a's nerd oh man anyway clarence parents have a real good marriage right uh that's just sort of nice anyway the new york islanders have a contest uh for people to be able to uh design their jersey
Starting point is 01:38:50 for the 27 28 season so it will not be this coming year but the year after and i gotta tell you because it'll be the third jersey i think that's fucking brilliant that's awesome you gotta put designed in quotes yeah you could just have not really designing it it's just pieces right it's they have a certain template and you just click the template and then that's it is it is it yeah is it more or less involved because i know like tj former co-host at virgin radio he he would you know when before he had a kid um would come in he's like i created a team last night because you know you could create a franchise oh hell yeah and then he would obviously go through and create the jerseys and he's like uh i i spent three and a half hours creating the jersey it's
Starting point is 01:39:35 my favorite part it's less involved than less involved in that yeah that's a shit they should just use that technology it is basically that if you want to pull it up hayden this is the design page this is the design your jersey for the contest so there's just the jersey striping what fanatics has and everything that they'll actually do you just select that and you hit next and you select all the colors and you make it real ugly or beautiful whatever you want and it's just the logos that you can use that you're allowed to use and then i don't know if you guys took an actual look at what was is there but like i got really excited by the headline and then i tried to do it and we did live on actually the stream yesterday and i was like oh this is a little
Starting point is 01:40:15 disappointing because i thought you'd actually be able to wow like design something and like just draw it and they're looking for actual designers but it's just like four it's four fields you just could click through oh yeah so i was a little disappointed but so how i think this thing is going to play out is you click through all of the preset selections and then what it's going to come down to because i assume in their mind they kind of know what they want the jersey to look like yep i think because they've set it up so much that it's just these presets selections that the selection committee who's going to then allow the jerseys to be fan voted on know kind of the idea of what they're looking for and it's going to come down to this field here where they you
Starting point is 01:40:57 can submit your additional details on like hey what does this mean what's your vision your concept and that's kind of how it'll come down to the contest and they'll pick people with good stories behind their jerseys because the jerseys won't really vary that much because there's nothing you can really do that'll vary because they already showed you the logos that you can use and the actual designs you can you're forcing fans to talk their way into their design being good yeah and i tried to i was going to submit live on stream when we were doing it yesterday and i was reading the rules and regs and it looks like it's only open to u.s residents oh okay so i don't think canadians can actually submit i also want to throw this at you uh if you choose the islanders
Starting point is 01:41:40 logo here go back the the one like the word or captain highliner no no jesse can we go back to the yeah i just want to make my jersey here adam i'm having okay but i'm just i have i'm having fun i'm having fun and you're taking away from the fun and i don't know oh that i don't know why you're taking away from the fun i've ever seen in my life oh my god let's do this uh you yeah there we go that looks like shit dude okay you can see why nhl friend offices are like ah fuck it just make it black so what logo do you want to use aisles islanders or that ny with the hockey stick these two no i like the hockey no no no i don't mind the hockey stick no that nothing good happened in that era no you're not a fan it's it's got to be highliner or the original logo
Starting point is 01:42:23 the original logo is amazing what about the lighthouse look at this awesome jersey like look at the aisles thing are we joking that was a piece nobody likes those nobody nobody so i I thought there's only two logos that work. It's the original and the Captain Highline or anything else. Stop it. That's the kind of jersey you see coming down the ice at you in EASHL. Yeah. You're all six foot nine.
Starting point is 01:42:45 Yeah. I thought this was the part where you actually get to design an Islanders logo. I thought that's what the contest was, like design a jersey and the logo, but it's like just choose from the Islanders logos and slap it on the colors you pick. Yeah. That's the whole contest. Easily the best one I saw was just the Captain Highliner logo, except it's the lady from Long Island Medium.
Starting point is 01:43:09 That was wonderful, and I hope they go with it. They should do that. The lady from Long Island Medium would be a good idea. Jesse, why are you doing these weird colors? Jesse, these are the ugliest jerseys I've ever seen in my life. It stinks. I think this should win. Is this worse than the Edmonton Oilers slick or the Buffa slug?
Starting point is 01:43:25 I think this should win. The oil slick. To be honest here. Somebody out there is alive and has to lay claim to the fact that they came up with that. and i always think about that geez or the burger that the la king's burger king logo that person you know that was 30 years ago maybe that person isn't around but i'm just saying i'm just saying the ugly come on what were we thinking you're wild for that by the way what do you mean you're
Starting point is 01:43:45 like that they should be ashamed of being alive but maybe i gotta own my bag takes you own yours absolutely not have you learned nothing about being on the internet it's no stay toxic king this aisles logo is so bad that stinks what did they use that that was for like an outdoor game or something i'm sure they use that on something and was it the third jersey in the adidas era might have been all their jerseys in the adidas era were awful horror some bad ones yeah yeah the ny the ny thing kind of yeah it's ass it's total fucking this is a jersey right here oh my god you know what jesse the turquoise gold and red kind of do work not with that logo works i gotta tell 40 seals we gotta change it well they had they were gold and there we go i was like
Starting point is 01:44:30 okay no no that's wow it looked too good this has got to be a devoted group of islanders fans that listen to this show why are we doing this to them there you go why are we doing this to the islanders fans who are loyal and amazing i would buy that yeah i know you would wear it as a joke stop it you know it what would be actually cooler is if if you were willing it'd be sick if you could have like a made to order i made this jersey and uh see that's kind of oh yeah because you can do that on nike they have like nike id shoes and you design your shoes and you can order them it's really cool that's what i have right now yeah you have nike id shoes on right now they have sdpn on the back yeah and you pick out the colorways and everything they should do
Starting point is 01:45:11 that with jerseys they would this feature this just be available that's awesome they would never do that with their own ip oh they can do that with jerseys but with the islanders logo on it they never do it oh they should but i think it'd be cool that's a good that's a good idea yeah that's a straight up good idea yeah i think they already know what the design is and they're just they're waiting for several hundred people to match it and go exactly these are all the people that came up with the idea even though the idea is already set and they choose the best person who wrote in that little section about like hey this is why i chose my jersey yeah exactly it's it's islanders i was upset because i was so hyped about this i was like we're gonna get some cool designs and
Starting point is 01:45:47 stuff and then i was like oh just click and play here's exactly what's gonna happen someone's gonna win islanders fans are gonna hate it they're gonna bring them onto the ice to honor them and they're gonna get the shit boot out of them they are gonna get the shit boot out of them oh welcoming to the ice little timmy then they're ripping up and burning pictures of timmy rowan snakes and timmy we don't need you and they're just kicking the shit out of timmy welcome to the long island i think i'm gonna write in a message here from steve dangle directly to gary betman
Starting point is 01:46:34 why what does it say let me see i don't know i'm just gonna write something whatever i quit yeah quit or maybe it'll be like two tom dundon broke ass quote steve dangle you're so broke lmao yeah anyways that's it um hey uh just quick shout out to uh uh just want to do a quick shout out to there were some radio station closers in canada and we just want to shout out all the people that lost their jobs 230 plus people at rogers now um and and i i uh i do want to mention like like people like oh screw rogers blah blah fair um yeah but i also want to remind you that they're not the only ones bell did this three or four years ago and it this is not the end of it i hope everybody's prepared for the fact that this is only the beginning and and so if you are um
Starting point is 01:47:30 if you know i said six zero actually said it on his show the other day and he said listen if you want to do this, you can do this. But he's like, you notice that I'm not on an FM or an AM radio station right now. Right. Right. It's something that I think is there's a transition happening here. Nobody likes seeing this happen. The fact of the matter is, from a business perspective, AM radio hasn't been profitable in 15 years. It's also very usually personnel heavy because they're not playing a lot of music. But all the same, for it to go the way that it went is horrible. The fact that these companies didn't switch to digital when they could have owned it uh is unforgivable and we were banging our heads against the walls working at both of those
Starting point is 01:48:12 companies begging them to do it i was still in school it's been obvious to me since like at least 2008 yeah but here's where we are so i did want to do a quick shout out to those people who unfortunately lost their jobs and were paid the price for uh just a company that just didn't care to make that switch and and and you know they're not the only company out there that's guilty of it so it's worth mentioning is that fair oh yeah a lot of good people lost their jobs yeah talented yeah it's a shame what it's creating in this country by the way is news deserts there are places where there are no newspapers left there are no radio stations left and i see people online going like people in the radio industry and i love you guys but i'm you gotta stop people
Starting point is 01:48:48 going um well you know if you love the radio station then support it and text in and call and buy ads and stuff like that i'm like not everybody's no no no it's on you the giver of information the owner of technology the expert in the field to change your operation to meet the needs of today's audiences your refusal to do that and your uh your thing of well we're going to bring people back in and change that you're not you're not they should have switched this years ago they didn't they should have doubled down on podcasts they didn't they should have doubled down on digital youtube everything else they refused and this is what happens the working people pay the price so that's that's my mini rant on they they uh owned uh television
Starting point is 01:49:35 stations and radio stations uh they didn't support digital they intentionally um stifled digital growth and uh now we're here two decades later and they've killed all of them right uh television's dying radio is uh practically dead and um all the all the main companies i'm just gonna say digitally they do a shitty job so here we are but there's plenty of your slop but there are plenty of great companies springing up and i think this yes in transition there's always a lot of uncertainty there's always a lot of hurt and it's frustrating and whatever but there are companies that that spring up ours is one of many and so you know it's not just sports we got to figure out news here's the thing that nobody wants to talk about people like why doesn't the government
Starting point is 01:50:25 support it they do it's called the cbc but um the the reality is that we got to find a way for news specifically to be profitable i don't know how we get there but news is not profitable right now it's very expensive to run it used to be very profitable it's not and that's one of those ones that's the public we yes because people in power are never going to support that because they are the ones that the news is about right so however that transition happens we're going to have to find a way and and i don't know what that looks like but uh anyway we wanted to shout those people out and not go on too long of a rant about it you could talk for hours you could do an entire show oh my god could have our own dedicated podcast ongoing yes our ongoing series uh i blame tagan
Starting point is 01:51:08 who tagan dundon it's your fault no you can't do that the steve dangle podcast follow the guys on twitter at steve underscore dangle at adam w y l d e and at jesse blake connection complete
