the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake
hey hey hey hey steve's tired because steve's a big baby where where i only had to drive all the
way out of my house to down a road west of young west of young street and and meet a bunch of
people who really like my stuff where were you london ontario oh london okay yeah it's a drive
man it's a drive you drive and you drive and you drive and then it's like you're in guelph and
you're like oh shit yeah i'm still not there i am not no i'm talking about the drive home oh yeah
well i think the reason the knights are able to win so many games is they just bore people on the
way on the bus damn you know think about being a peter jenny okay i'm sorry no sarnia is the
worst drive in the country well what would the soupy oh i haven't done it i've never done this
have you so you did the sarnia drive yeah seven there was uh there was a canada uh russia series
game okay remember remember uh uh hold on sarnia is a three-hour drive yeah but it's there's
nothing oh there's nothing to look no if you want to see nothing drive between calgary and edmonton
that's fucking nothing there's nothing going the only thing i can remember on that road and i drove
it many times was two horses banging damn literally that's so exciting though it was i didn't see two
horses banging in new brunswick horses were banging on the side of the road my co-host
at the time was like ew ew ew ew and then like and i was like she's like look out the window
and then i looked out the window wait a sec wait a sec that's chaka the five-legged zebra chaka
what are you doing in alberta that's for vips right oh yeah not everyone gets that reference
chaka on the main show that's right chaka is a fantastic story it's so good yeah by the way
there is a zoo a toronto zoo story that will be in the vip this week uh that i'm going to mention
and I'm not gonna that's all I'm gonna say about it but there will be a Toronto Zoo story whenever
there is we have to bring it up because VIP is just an extension of this team is ruining my life
not hockey rants and raves wow very little zoo content I every time someone asks like at a
signing they're like you know what zoo stories are in here I'm like there are none and they go
oh you're disappointed yeah they're disappointed people love animals I get that it's mentioned I
don't think there's a story though oh well that's a shame you should have put that in there london
nice nice place right yeah yeah apparently three other people showed up uh the head count i think
was 240 but like a lot of them had uh uh two books a lot of them had the first book um one guy bought
six um and at one point for what i don't uh three of them he got signed three of them uh for easter
seals giveaways so i'm actually i'll i'll handle that um please remind me about that later but
there were a bunch of there were a stack of books on the table for display and within about half an
hour the guys who work at indigo were like uh we need this and yoink in the cell they sold them all
and i didn't realize this so it was at an indigo there was a cole's bookstore across the street
and they're do you egg them they yeah we do no i'm pretty sure they're all owned by the same
company and um uh they so the book you didn't have me to your store dick the store i was in
ran out of books and a bunch of people instead of just leaving and going oh well they went across
the street bought the book there and came back that's cool yeah signed for four straight hours
and then and then drove out that's a long day so three hours four hours and three more hours
uh yeah all right yeah roughly i was two and a half yeah vroom vroom and uh yeah four and then
suggest five hours in the car steve warned us before you walked in the room that he's grumpy
because he had to work yesterday he's a grumpy boy yeah a little bit boy no no i had a it was
a great day didn't get a sunday in his pool yeah it is november winter it is november it's been
it's been weirdly mild lately yeah it was like 22 last wednesday you know cool you can't swim
in a closed pool i don't know you should close it up already why did what i mean i thought you
I thought you had a heated pool.
This is November.
I thought you had a heated pool with all these books.
Yeah.
I am not like a shake.
I don't do it.
Well, I mean, I'm merely friends with them.
You're merely paid by them.
Yes.
Yes.
Did the three on three league not pay enough for a heated pool?
Yeah.
What the hell, man?
Your pool, it doesn't matter the season.
The pool is as hot as the heater.
Oh, yeah.
I do a lot of driving.
Also might be indoor.
Yeah.
Oh, you ever been to a house with an indoor pool?
I've seen one.
The whole place smells like chlorine, but it's worth it.
No, I've never been to a house with an indoor pool.
I have been to a house with an indoor pool.
Who the hell do you know with an indoor pool?
When I played for the Toronto Young Leafs back in the day,
in my single A days, there was a kid at the end of the year,
we went over to his house and he needed an indoor pool.
And the amazing thing about it was it was just a normal,
it wasn't any bigger than my house.
It was just they had less house and more pool.
Like it was, well, there's like, their kitchen was tiny,
their living room was tiny, gigantic pool room.
And it was all wood panel too, and like cedar.
so you so it smelled good it was like man this is i could give up all that space for a pool
having not been there that sounds dumb it was awesome yeah awesome well when you're in grade
eight it was great oh yeah yeah well when you're in grade eight exactly yes no i uh spend a lot of
time in the car and some time in the shower and every now and then either in the car or in the
shower i think about the mlh story and i go don't worry about that don't worry about the worst it's
in the past yeah but the bank account is forever uh hey shoeless joes hold on hold on a second
hold on what are you looking at give me give me one second so we can talk about this indoor pool
house in toronto it's 10.9 million dollars that is not the house 10.9 i'm just saying
a indoor pool house adam loves real estate porn i love this so this real estate porn i am the
horse by the side of the highway right now this story is entirely for adam wilde since we're
talking about indoor pools here's a 10.9 million dollar house in toronto okay actually i want to
look up in the neighborhood but you guys can talk about this while i do that okay let me tell you
they have so for the people listening adam wilde do your best to describe the indoor we're talking
about a pool that looks a little bit more like you do laps in it subway tile the older style
sliding glass doors with sort of the thicker paneling around them and those wooden handles
and you know that those sliding glass doors by the way haven't been cleaned in like since the
80s and need some wd-40s so bad right the tiling on the wall makes it look like a pizza place
absolutely and you know what i'll be honest with you the place i was at the pool was kind of more
compressed and a little more squat so it's more of us like a circle better for kids because then
if you're playing like volleyball or whatever you can good for a crack in your head yeah yeah good
for cracking your head they also have a hot tub with a lot of uh tropical plants which is cool
and then they have i love this by the way jesse just point that yes you had your stained glass
shower the 80s not stained glass what is that called what's that square glass called it's not
staying uh dentist waiting room hold on 80s square glass i know this is an old house uh glass blocks
I love these things so much
what are they called
place where they keep business cards
in like an H&R block
they are basically
they're called glass blocks I guess
and they've got this retro look to them
they're now by the way those glass blocks back in style
so if you have an 80s home or a 60s home
or a 70s home when they were popular
don't get that stuff removed because that is now
very cool to have very chic
it's back in style because people are nostalgic
for homeowners
absolutely by the way jesse adam you would have missed it you would have missed the the rest of
the pictures i was scrolling oh pretty old right oh yeah look at that you can see look at this
wallpaper here yeah that's my god it's my nana's house oh yeah a carpeted basement yeah yeah i'm
surprised like now it'd be like polished concrete right something really cheap yes and you can tell
the part parts of the house that they've sort of updated because there's like pot lights and that
cheap wood finish the vinyl floor yeah which is good i love vinyl flooring i think it's great
people hate on it uh you can spill anything on vinyl flooring and you can have a child and
nothing's gonna yeah vinyl flooring uh big look at one of the main attractions of this house and
reason it's 10.9 million dollars is the property size how big is this property it is ginormous
where is this house is this uh it's in forest hill oh okay yeah it's in forest hill so i should
shout out because we're using the uh pictures and everything just to give credit harvey kales
real estate palace harvey callous harvey i don't know harvey callous you know them i have met
harvey callous before oh you guys are buddies we're not buddies no go to game of course you
have met the owner of that harvey season tickets next to your boss doesn't own the house he's
representing the house he's selling his own house harvey's an older guy now i don't think harvey's
selling houses anymore i think harvey's just being a rich guy i i don't know do you guys have
martinis together and we do not have martinis together i met him once at a dinner that my mom
was that oh fancy and i was there yeah dinner harvard 60 harvard 60 no like um it was high
it was in florida and it was oh international dinner crab rangoon and things of that nature
what's that restaurant uh there's the chilies no i can't remember you know what i'm talking about
yes it's that restaurant we were one of those crab rangoon things of that nature so you had
an international dinner with harvey callas i did i i did and his wife uh and they're very nice
people very very nice i have nothing but good things to say i was 18 i don't know man they
weren't i don't think i was saying compelling things as an 18 year old generally you probably
thought you were though yeah oh man i bet i was let me tell you about my band
my leather pants and my band all right i gotta talk about shoeless joes can we do that
nah
Shoeless Joe's
next week

all that insane money
inside the arena
how about that
how about that
how about
how about beers
aren't 48 million dollars
they're not
they're just normal
priced beers
their normal beer price imagine that and after the game when all the traffic's crazy and people
are running to get out of it just head over to shoeless joe's have a little something to eat
have a little something to drink and then take your uber home or your go train or whatever it is
you know i don't know i don't understand the rush to get out of that area it's like yeah just go go
somewhere and chill well because if you get out of it first you're fine and everyone thinks they're
first but that requires not leaving five minutes with like with five minutes left of the game and
even in a loss i refuse to leave early no but have you considered having your cake and eating it too
no yeah not in toronto try those tickets are so rare and so expensive there's no way i'm leaving
that game no i i remember i was there for like a six nothing loss i forget it i think it might
have been the oilers i don't even know and i was like i said to my girlfriend at the time
uh i was like i am not leaving you're like you never know she's like why why why and i'm like
these tickets were too damn expensive i am not leaving we are sitting here and we're gonna we're
gonna gut this out i am gonna grossly inconvenience myself yeah to watch the final three minutes of
this loss to columbus yes we're just putting off having to talk about minnesota producer hayden is
here in another room oh and he's got his wild jersey on just painful piece of garbage so anyway
shoeless shows 249 queens key west you can get the event bright link uh in the description of
the video or the audio channels whether you're watching on on youtube or spotify or apple it's
all there canadian sports grill shoeless joe's is a canadian get it right grill do it again yeah
anyway that's their prime location you got to check it out sometimes life throws your curve
balls and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you
should check this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my
condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never
clean my windows oh and they're way around on that it's like well it's a patio window you can

million pieces of furniture have been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting
go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list 15 off your first task at taskrabbit.ca or on the task
rabbit app using the promo code dangle taskers across canada book up fast especially for same
day tasks get 15 off your first task right now with the promo code dangle at taskrabbit.ca
or the task rabbit app you should download that taskrabbit.ca code dangle the leafs lose two games
They did, however, get a point in the second half of a back-to-back.
So we got to take our wins.
And we can talk about what happened in the Blues game
and the Leafs dominating period one and the Blues dominating period two
and the reffing in the third and Jake Nabors running wild and, you know, whatever.
And you can talk about the wild game.
You can talk about that play in overtime, the change.
You know what I'm talking about.
We can talk about all that.
But, guys, I don't want to talk about these specific games to start.
We need to talk about this one number, and it was 7.8% going into last night.
It is now around 10%.
Wow.
The Leafs are, listen, you want positivity this morning?
I'll give it to you.
The Leafs moved up a place in the standings for the worst power play in the league.
The 31st?
They are 31st now.
The Buffalo Sabres are the only ones who are worse.
I'm still down on it.
So let's talk about the Leafs power play,
which it's not unfair at this point, gentlemen, to say,
is costing them very real points in the standings yep um they should have got at least a point out
of that game against st louis you had the opportunities teams score power play goals
yeah it's weird teams score power play goals you should be getting i mean maybe not every game
uh-huh but like every second game if you're generating enough opportunities or getting
enough opportunities i should say on the power play we could debate whether or not they did
get enough power plays uh in that game against st louis uh they had enough that they could have
made it work they couldn't do anything right um they didn't shoot they didn't pass they didn't
go to the net they couldn't gain the zone they were garbage um minnesota they finally did score
i talked about this in the lfr and i didn't want to see it seem like a scrooge like okay
positives they had the zone and they were set up rare for them Matthew Nyes bowling a china shop
in front of the net good stuff that Matthew's pass to Nylander is sexy as hell and the shot
is sexy as hell that's just not going to work most games and I don't think anyone wants to
hear that I think everyone's like hooray they finally scored it's extraordinarily low percentage
I noticed by the way the wild really collapsed their power play they take the shooting lanes
away but they will they'll let you pass it around the point as much as you want to oh yeah we'll do
that go ahead and what what happened was Matthews just flutters this beautiful feed through two wild
players and Tavares manages to not hit any of them and then there's another wild player on the other
side of it and it's gorgeous and it's beautiful and they finally get off the schneid and maybe
that's exactly what they needed mentally to go into the next game and have confidence in their
power play and actually do something with it but they're not going to be able like the goal that
they scored in that wild game they might get five more of those the rest of the year like just the
way it was scored i'm not talking cross slot pass uh cross slot through that kind of traffic
it i sound like a scrooge because they lost like they dropped three out of four points
but it's that's simply not going to be available to them most nights it's not going to work so so
that i think the question becomes guys because the the one thing that is true is that the least
power play has worked up until a certain date every year end of february last year was it 28
and that's usually the case it's about end of february except for 2023 when as you mentioned
the lfr this weekend uh they had a good power play and look at that they won the first round
That's so crazy.
Yeah.
So crazy how that happened.
But previous years, their power play has stunk in the playoffs,
and that's what's happened.
You turn up the lights.
So the problem now is that this seems to now be a carryover
from mid-February last year.
This is not a, oh, they're started slow.
No, this is as bad as it looked at the end of the season last year.
And you've changed coaches, and you have now finally mixed up the lines.
at what point do the players on the ice go,
maybe we ought to shoot it?
Coach just told them.
Like, this is...
You can only go off what you're told, right?
Like, not being in the locker room
when they're going through this stuff.
Jesse, I know you have access to the locker room now,
but something tells me they don't break down
the power play in front of you.
No, they don't do that.
I see them practice it.
There you go.
All right.
Do they shoot it in practice?
Occasionally.
Yeah, that's pretty neat.
I like that they do that.
It's cute.
Not as much as they should, but still.
It's quaint that they do that.
Gorgeous of them to do that.
Craig Berube's been...
Boy, there's no subtext to this coach.
I kind of love it.
There's not Babcock's weird mind games.
There's not Keefe needing to compliment sandwich everything.
there's Craig Berube going go to the net shoot it I mean it's very simple and um they won't do it
one thing that I think has crossed my mind a couple times one thing that has crossed my mind
a couple times during this season and looking back to last season is how effective they've
been at six on five um as opposed to five on four and it feels like when they're six on five and
they pull the goalie there's a sense of urgency with the team yeah that it's we gotta get this
goal here to save a point to try and extend the game to get a goal and with the power play there
isn't that same urgency it's the same people on the ice that they throw out at six on five but
their percentage of goals when they are at six on five with the empty net is higher than their
power play that's psychotic they're better at six on five than at five on four and it just to me
it's a mentality thing right now it's totally you guys aren't taking the same amount of urgency you
with that situation as you are with the power play and like you said adam it's this is literally
costing them points in the standings like this is a huge part of hockey and the game you can be
power play merchants and rack up goals and points that way like it's a very easy way to win we see
kucherov load up on points and goals that way because he's good at that part of the game and
it's an important part of the game to be good at and yeah there's a lot of goals being left on the
board because you don't have a competent power play there was a game last year i mean samsonov
was just terrible in net but i want to say the lightning got like three power play goals
and all right well tuck it in yeah like it it's it's over being good at the power play is to me
is the same way like teams are like great at goaltending you know it's like okay we load up
on this one kind of quote specialized position of a hockey game where it's not just five on five
your forwards against your defense it's hey this specific aspect we have good goaltending we have
good power play and we beat you in that way and overall we're winning the game because we are
better than you at this little area of the game you know and if they're not good at this is really
long term really difficult for this team to do anything in this league you can't have a competent
power can i give you one snapshot of a bigger problem okay just a stat this is from core chl
it's a good follow on twitter um matthew's five on five shot percentage 2021 to 2024
okay averaged out over three years yeah it's 14.09 that's five on five that's five on five
Pretty good.
Although snipers usually are like in the 18, 19, 20%.
They're there.
No, they're around there.
Over a three-year span, yes.
I think it's impressive.
It's incredible.
It's amazing that he scored that many goals.
I know what I'm saying.
Matthew's five-on-five shooting percentage in 2024-25.
That'd be this season.
5.8%.
Yep, that'll go up.
Matthew's five-on-four shooting percentage, 21-24.
This is power play.
20.48%.
That's what I'm talking about, right?
snipers touch of death right i wonder uh how that compares to other stars in the how about
how it compares to this year okay 6.25 jesus and listen oh uh it's not like marner can't score
it's not like nylander can't score i think both of those guys i think nylander is a 40 goal guy
should be a 40 goal guy every year at this point in the peak of his career i think marner should
be a 30 35 and maybe one of these years he gets a 40 he's gonna have to start shooting more he's
consistently each year for the last three years scored at like a mid 30s pace he's it's there
yeah matthews we've seen him get almost 70 yep uh we've seen him do 60 twice um if he isn't scoring
one of them needs to be i i went through this in the lfr last night i called this in the summer
he could have a an incredible season 50 goals that's 19 fewer goals like the leafs were third
in their division they didn't have home ice advantage in the first round despite having a 69
goal score the the next one is even the one you did after that i think is even more dark because
you said if willie had a 50 goal season and austin had a 50 goal season they'd still be down on goals
They'd still be minus nine from last season.
If both of them had a 50-goal season, we would be over the moon.
Yes.
But if you just look at the stats from last year,
it's actually less cumulative goals that both of them scored.
That's insane.
If Austin got 50, Willie got 50, and Nize got 25,
they would be plus one.
like the the share
i'm not doing it again right i'm not doing it again but the stars have to perform they can't
just perform like stars they have to perform fucked to even get to where they were last year
which is not good enough right like i like the tandem i like the top four like the first thing
i thought of when when we were talking about the power play and how it goes back to last year and
the changes the least made over the off season and well i like that well i like that well i like
the well okay the main focus of the power play is still the same people like yeah you throw oel in
there you know the second unit is always mercenaries like it's always guys who are here
for a hot flash right like this year okay patch ready there's a one and done probably unless he
resigns uh can we call alan live in the show surprise him i think i think probably more time
needs to pass although the way patch ready's been throwing the body i hope they keep him i love him
yeah he's been crushing guys yeah okay man's got a contract yeah uh domey robertson's
been given that like he's gone from one of their best players in the preseason to
nick we need you to be better than pontus holmberg playing poorly but not just pontus
holmberg i think he's playing poorly he's playing better than pontus holmberg he's just not getting
he has he has a catastrophic shift once a game and he had one in this one where he was he broke
his stick and was just completely vulnerable out there you should have heard joe bowen on the radio
oh really i didn't he just abandoned calling the play he's like go to the bench wow he just
abandoned really i'm mad i missed you go to the bed and then at intermission he's like you're as
a forward you're useless without your stick go get one take a few seconds to go anyway um
i'm going over a lot of a lot of issues here um the bottom six unless doer
doer and yarn croak coming back is actually bigger for this team than you think
like yarn croak has scored 20 goals doer was scoring at roughly a 15 goal pace before he
game to toronto and then sort of fizzled a little bit if those guys can come into the lineup and
score at roughly that pace oh that takes a lot of pressure off takes a lot of like that's that's
points in the standings right there oh yeah um but again the core guys matthews in particular
have to score at such a goofy rate to even break even that it's not looking realistic
well i want to i i actually think that you're wrong on that one uh because i do think that
there is depth on this team to make up if this magic 19 goals just evaporates and it gets to 50
and that's still extremely impressive i think they have the horses to do it the problem is nice
problem is nice got six goals right big part well he's got nine and 13 he's a big part john and by
the way austin matthews and john devars are tied with each other in points right now uh five goals
good for one of them uh and i want to say this uh he's had a he's had a great year as far as
a cisco yeah but mitch martyr having the same amount of goals as steven lorenz is not gonna
pass uh right and mitch martyr having less goals than mcmahon less goals than riley and and the
same amount of goals as max patch ready respective of what mitch does i'm not trying to take but he
needs to score well and you need to actually score goals and and and goals are more important
there's a solid argument that he's their best player right now oh yeah i would i want to
compliment him later at worst i think he's second like willie's i mean he's got nine goals like
it's pretty good um uh but as good as mitch has been like you look at his points you look at his
assists um you look at some of the stuff he's doing in front of the net like that goal he got
the other night yeah go to the net doesn't matter what size you are that's at least the second goal
of the season where it's like hey mitch was the screen um it's still enough to be exactly where
you were last year six five and two after 13 games it just it's the leafs year in and year out
with this structure are just trying to fill the same holes with the same they're trying to fill
the same 10 holes with the same eight fingers or and it's not work steve is it that one of their
best players or a couple of their best players are not scoring at the rate they normally are
and once that regresses or progresses as i think is the probably the better term uh things will
get better yeah show me i agree like i agree but what listen we have how many times we will say
what if one thing we can say is in the regular season they score goals yeah i i don't think
anybody's gonna deny that no this is right around the time last year where they just went off
And they had a run that they were basically able to ride for the rest of the season.
But I'm tired of saying, hey, what if everything works out?
Like, I'm just, ugh, boring.
Like, it's a fool's errand, like, to me.
Like, again, I sit here every show and I'm like, don't mention April.
Don't mention April.
Don't mention April.
You know, yeah, what if everything goes perfectly?
i i think there's 25 teams in the nhl who can make the playoffs if everything goes perfectly
there's and there's like seven who suck like i i i think i'm tired of it see i'm not as down
on the overall team i think the power play thing is an issue though i'm not down on the team i'm
not either i actually think i i have to be honest with you and i probably should have started the
segment this way i'm actually quite high on this team i love the way the playoffs team's gonna be
fine um team has the same fucking problems well so jesse i want to i want to ask you this because
you're down at the practices and stuff do you think maybe part of some of the issues here is
you've got a new coach and they tried the old formations for the first little bit and now
they're trying new formations and these guys are getting used to each other no because the new coach
got a full training camp so it's not like the he was craig brube was brought in mid-season so like
from the get-go they've been doing Craig
Berube's system
from training camp to the start of the game.
That's not an excuse. Keefe had like
a year and a half probationary
period, whereas Berube
is getting it the way you should.
The interesting thing
with the power play and the coaching
is, okay, so what
Mark Savard's doing isn't working,
clearly. They've tried now
Riley was in there,
and then they had OEL
in there, and then they had this
weird hybrid where we start the second unit unit and then willie gets his own unit and then now
they've gone five forwards and the five forwards thing kind of worked but we weren't like really
satisfied with how they got the goal because it's not really repeatable i don't think so i i assume
the coaching isn't great right now with what savard's doing with power play but it's also
the personnel isn't executing so i just don't know what the issue there is on from a coaching level
that's what that's what barubi said what did he say he said it's an execution thing yeah um i don't
i don't know if that's the exact quote but he mentioned the word execution um you know you
could say well it's just him sticking up for his coach cool it's him throwing an entire unit under
the bus yeah it's him throwing 10 players under the bus because if we've if we wanted anything
from the leafs over the years it's like try something like try anything and here they're
trying stuff like savard is throwing out different units every single game and they're trying it
and nothing seems to be getting them going maybe this five four thing gets them going so at least
they're trying something but if the personnel has been the same since february and it's the same
guys then we kind of know what it comes down i'm i'm i'm another couple weeks maybe away from all
right fuck it steven lorenz on the power play like like just you were great last night yeah
just send a message like um i mean okay i am very not comparing these players so please everyone
chill but there was a time and I still remember it where I was like why not throw Zach Hyman on
the power play because no one was mixing it up in front and people were like you're an idiot
because that's back when Hyman couldn't hit the broadside yeah he had stone hands people dude it
was it's crazy to ever it's crazy to even remember him as that player but there was a time he would
get 15 goals and like lead the team in scoring chances yeah like it was it was just unbelievable
And then he goes in the power play.
He does pretty well.
He rides it into a contract where he scores 50 frigging goals.
Nyes last night doesn't touch the puck, doesn't get an assist,
is a big reason why they got a goal on that one.
Takes a defender with him and everything.
Mix it up in front.
If there's anything with this power play that I want to see continue going forward,
leave the kid there.
do not touch him leave him there he earned he's he's got six goals what's he second on the team
yeah what are you taking him off for leave him there he's earned it he does everything that
you've asked him to do stop it everyone around him you do whatever you want different quarterback
different looks different triangles square isosceles whatever the fuck leave nize there
i like that i don't think anybody's going to disagree with that matt nize has been a monster
for them it's been great um well it took a while to get him on there it was interesting seeing
mitch marner in a more quarterbacking position on the power play i thought that was an interesting
look you know i think there was a good switch it suits what he does yeah yeah it adds it lends to
his game because he's such a non-threat to shoot at some points at the end of the st louis game
when him and austin were playing uh hot potato oh they couldn't that was that was probably the
most frustrated i've ever been at that during this season that was probably the most frustrated
i've been all season long it's just them passing the puck back and forth though we can't get this
bouncing puck to settle one of you guys just shoot it like in seeing who are you william
kneelander just who you stop fucking crying bro fucking shoot it right and that that little stuff
you see that consistently but having him in a position where it's not his job to shoot on the
power play i think is good for the power well it's just the overall conversation i want to ask
this because it for for a while here and i think people forget the ethos in toronto was hold the
possession and something will open up keep moving the puck around keep moving the puck around keep
that goes right back to babcock and that was the front office's new thing when they brought in
kyle and a lot of the analytics staff and keep the possession keep the possession don't just
fire it for nothing what the leafs are finding out this year is when you dump and chase uh and
when you do shoot the puck sometimes good things really happen yes however for that to work you
got a you got a four check the least on five on five have done a really good job for checking
yeah really good dump and chase team i and i've i've enjoyed that my thing on the power play is
you that's the next area of okay we got to break this old habit because we corrected too far the
other way sometimes the pendulum swings a little hard one way and then it swings a little hard the
the other we've now swung the other too far you gotta stop moving the puck around and looking for
perfection yes it's about keeping it low it's about snapshots and it's about having somebody
in front that you trust like an eyes like a Tavares that can tip can move can screen can do
whatever uh can I make a point about Marner Adam I think it was you I was talking to I was like
ah someone made a really good point I think it might have been you but I think it was off likely
not me if it was ah well it was you quoting someone that you spoke ah well at least I know
a good one someone i spoke to recently said morgan riley is a defenseman without a defenseman
slap shot but he has a forwards wrist shot i didn't say that but that's thank you for a trip
okay well anyway morgan riley is a defenseman it's true though like he doesn't have a defenseman
slap shot but he does have a forwards wrist shot that's not a criticism of morgan riley but
it is to say okay if that's what he does why can't you have mitch marner quarterback your power play
he could he can do all those things i don't want him in a one-timer slot that doesn't make sense
he doesn't do those things well it's not that he can't either he does have a great shot he can do
them and he's taken a few but is that what he's best at no no he's a facilitator willie smacks the
puck like hell he beats the shit out of that thing and we saw that last night so okay you have
mitch who's fast and defensively responsible enough that if shit hits the fan he can get back
in the same way that riley could he can float it on the same way that riley could you don't have a
slap shot back there but that's okay you don't have that with riley either so what's wrong with
having mitch quarterback the thing willie in the right-handed bomb spot matthews in the left-handed
bomb spot Tavares bumper nice net front that's a pretty good setup to me yeah that's that's pretty
much how it looked last night exactly like I think it's what they should try going forward
yeah so you would leave this for Boston as opposed to going back to OEL or right reward the unit that
scored yeah from a mentality that like I've already gone through why I don't think that's
repeatable but from a mentality standpoint hey good for you like Berube is very blunt and I
think tough love uh no reward them especially because like who cares how you scored you scored
you know it's whether you got the lucky one or you earned that goal like you scored so you should
get rewarded brube took a last place team to the cup i think he understands that luck is okay to
have and we forget that the power play goal they scored i think that was the shift where the second
unit started right they yeah they threw out this because they were coming off of austin and all
them beat the ice so the second unit by by default got the first shot at it and then they failed
miserably and couldn't hold the zone at any moment and wasted about like 50 seconds of the power play
and then the five forward unit went out and they scored one thing i gotta say about the second unit
and uh also just the bottom six in general max domy's got to pick up his socks he was so good
to start the season and he hasn't he hasn't been good enough and like i'm not even talking about
the overtime goal because i actually think there's some blame to go around on that i think oel
changing when he did was what patches what were what were any of the three it was a comedy of
errors like everybody was wrong on it yeah um one thing if we want to do that right now the goal
simulation on it is very funny oh okay let's bring it up we can do that if you guys want to just give
me a second i would love to now here's here's what i want to say about max domey and i've been
saying this since the start of the year when we first saw the roster what is the one thing i have
been saying what are the Leafs missing a center a center and it's not Max's fault that he is not
the center they need at the third spot but imagine Max Domi with Tavares imagine Max Domi with CJ
keeps bringing him up Brock Nelson on the right I'm not interested in seeing him on the left no
put him on the right Max Domi should have a guy who can score that he can set up they keep putting
Holmberg third line right wing and he's not and he's not good they keep putting Robertson third
line right wing and he hasn't been good enough i shouldn't say holmberg's not good but robertson
and holmberg have not been good enough get a center domi slots over problem solved jesse all
right fire it up goal simulation steve if you want to take us through the play-by-play that
would be very handy to get your glasses on yes yes i do all right here you go uh i'm gonna struggle
with the numbers of the the wild players domi here he is he passes it up to himself oh shit it's
Jonas Brodine there's four
Leafs on the ice oh my god
it's a two on oh and
Boldy so let's go back and
slow that down yeah that
was really fast it's a very
it's a very quick moving
play it's three on three
but we see the play in the
zone yeah for the why I'll
tell you to stop so Domi
reads this really well yeah
I think that's Boldy
passing back to I don't
remember who 23 is and
Domi's like I know what
you're gonna do got
something for your ass play
forward here we go oh and i gotcha great deal by domi and he passes it forward look so he's dead
heat with brodeen i don't blame domi in the moment for thinking he's gonna win this race at this very
moment where domi is all alone in front of the play but in his own zone just before he chips the
puck up i was i was on my couch being like oh break away we're gonna we're gonna score this
gonna be a goal you know what i think would have solved the problem here is if he uh instead of
going for the breakaway like he passes it way forward to himself um use patches like boldy is
basically out of the play drop it for patches and then go and go right then make it a two-on-one i
guess you know yeah no i don't know how late these guys are into their shift i mean ekman larson is
obviously at the end of his it's three on three everybody's tired it's also second night of
back-to-back the least were fucking gassed all right and but everybody in the game is gassed
at this doesn't matter when three on three yeah exactly but he's gone so use patches but he doesn't
so domi passes it up to himself so we see that's the chip comical gets so beat to that comical how
fast brodine beats him yeah and like domi is not a slow player no it's just it's not comparable
But like the speed there from Brodine is fantastic.
Now, there's, I mean, on either side of Domi.
So his mistake is already made.
It'd be, what would have fixed this is if he'd bailed.
Like just bail.
You give them the puck.
That's not ideal at all, but just bail.
Because you're about to get a two on O.
OEL is going to-
Also, just note from Hayden,
we keep saying Brodine, it's Spurgeon.
all my bad Spurgeon's the one who made there's something about Spurgeon that is just I'm never
gonna remember he's a person who exists he's the captain too he's the captain who like every year
I fuck something up with Jared Spurgeon and I'm sorry okay tradition anyway so um puck goes up
I don't know what either player on either side of Domi is thinking in this scenario so is that
to give uh oel and and patches some leeway here is the thinking he's got a breakaway i can go for
a change if he doesn't score the two guys who are coming off the bench will be there in time to get
the rebound and you're on your off bench right you're correct you're you're bad so they got a
change there at their own blue line right and then the two guys will leave from the end and go right
to the net right oel i understood it oel i could see thinking even if he gets beat here i gotta get
off and there's two wild deep in our zone that need to um clear yeah they they gotta come back
to the blue line and come back around so there's no better time than now i'm gonna go at the very
least you're net even yes the guy's gonna come off the bench where the two wild players will be
and everything's gonna be fine yeah and knowing that he's changing it'd be i mean you'd love
domey to identify what's going on quicker and bail patch already to me can see everything
and like here go forward so where are you going uh also i don't know if you caught if you got
a cabris off sneaking off the bench a little yeah see has to go here's my problem oh we all has to
go to the far bench that's the problem right well you're so what you guys said about him leaving the
defensive zone while true would have been passable if his bench was close to his his defensive zone
but it's not well it also doesn't help that he doesn't skate you got to get puck that puck over
the offensive blue line before you can go right but he's going to here like i figure it's it's
it's gonna be pretty close because he expects domi to at least enter the zone here with the
puck right but i think it's fair to expect domi to win the puck back to the uh offensive blue
line when he has such a far lead over jared spurgeon oel's last stride is like 25 feet from
the least bench so like also doesn't hustle yeah man like yeah let's be honest and and from a like
a tenured player in his 30s like that's just not good enough if you add him if you want to roast
him on not hustling i'm 100 behind on that that and i listen i want to tell you something i have
an infatuation with oel yeah i love him i love him great player i love this man that was not
great actually i love all three players on the ice here oh man i'm a pro domey guy i freaking
love how patch ready was crushing guys all game to all weekend and oel has been what an amazing
signing for three point whatever million dollars what he's brought to this team and how chippy he
is and he's actually got a shot from the point all that yeah it's not a good play i'm sure all
of them if they were sitting in this room and there were no cameras on they'd be like yeah
That fucking sucks.
We ought to finish the play, though.
I wish I was home for the game.
There's one thing that I miss in the LFR.
I wish I was home for the game because I was thinking of stuff to say for the LFR in the car,
and I forgot about this one.
When he got the double minor and he was sitting on the bench and he's like, me?
Hilarious.
And it was for roughing.
I just wanted to be like, yeah, Oli, you're not on the Panthers anymore.
They call those.
Anyway, good luck.
Sorry, bud.
That was good stuff by OEL.
just pretending like he didn't commit both the infractions um i thought the the second call
was a little like i know because it was he threw the punches when he the guy was turtled right but
like there's a whole scrum maybe it's supposed to be on both sides i didn't think he deserved both
but sure whatever um all right so here's the rest of the play domi is about he chips it forward
watch 67 watch 67 and patches is all the way where are you going south you got to go straight
yeah and you get and there's nobody so now you got Domi who should have bailed on this play
long ago you got McCabe who's like I don't know I'll friggin try to fly I guess and patch ready
there's no what on earth is he doing at the center ice line yeah yeah what's he doing yeah
it's a bad play none of this is good from anyone except and poor McCabe has to eat the dash
yeah oel does not have to eat that dash that's uh yeah that sucks i wish i wish plus minus was
like adjustable yeah you could be like nah that's not on you sucks yeah yeah no it's a deeply deeply
flawed stat yeah only when it's ridiculous does it really matter yeah uh yeah uh but i would say
that uh um you know when you look at where this is and obviously you know we can watch it why
Look at that.
Boldy just comes in and makes a great move, too.
Installers have been really good.
And I thought Wall was good on Saturday.
I thought in the second period there was a weak goal in the second period with Wall.
But otherwise, because I've been watching him.
He's fine.
He's fine.
He's not otherworldly.
He's fine.
He's been good enough that he's given you a chance to win.
Has he been to his standard?
No.
And is he Ilya Samsonov?
No.
Much better, right?
So we're good.
We're good on that.
I am 0% worried about the goaltending.
Here's the deal.
There's a lot of games in the season.
How many?
82 fully.
Not so many!
So many games.
Stupid shit is going to happen.
Stupid shit is going to happen.
Well, stupid shit is happening 100% of the overtime games.
Yes, I know.
The Leafs are bad in overtime.
They are.
What the fuck, man?
I also, this is somebody who, I came up on my Twitter and they said,
And listen, the Leafs are up in expected goals for shots for Corsi for expected goals.
You're talking to them like percentage.
So sorry.
Goals for percentage shots for percentage Corsi for percentage, which essentially possession and expected goals for percentage.
And you're probably going, hey, Adam, aren't you the guy that's like, how about the numbers on the ice?
And I am.
But I think we're not talking about a seven game series.
We're talking about an 82 game series.
and the 82 games series to me i feel like so much of this is going to come down to that power play
clicking yeah they're not in overtime if that power play is good no they're not three on three
in the playoffs they are they are that that st louis game is tied or better if you remember it
easily goes over time absolutely easily goes over and so this is where that's the thing that they
got to figure out and i think what's going to help is at some point this year they're going to need
to make a move for a centerman and he's gonna have to be good he's gonna be he can't just be
some it can't be a brian boyle trade it's got to be like like i said like a brock nelson this person
has to have scored 25 goals regularly oh um i was gonna need something like that because if i was
gonna float a really boring name what uh i was i did say alex kerfoot i'm gonna just no that's not
a boring name that's exciting as hell that's the most boring name no um i was on like okay you're
you're like brock nelson i this is not happening it'd be very cool he's a ufa um i did a podcast
uh with a guy named pierce who uh uh likes the blackhawks and he's like well what about like
jason dickinson that's fine yeah i'm good with that it's not nearly as sexy no it would tie the
room together though yeah yeah don't mean i i want him setting people up and i actually think
he would be spectacular again i keep saying alongside matthews but nobody wants to he's
best from the right wing yeah well that like okay so who do you give mitch uh tabaris so you give
why why not load up and yeah okay so where's willie i have his own night
so you do what they kind of tried last year i'd like to see willie and jason or nick robertson
on the same line oh shit what is happening i don't know we're trying shit adam's uh adam was
really excited on saturday because uh the toronto maple east won the deserve to win o meter oh
hell yeah 69.9 it was 69.9 percent according to moneypuck.com and the deserve to win-o-meter
the leafs uh won that game 69.9 percent of the times uh the st louis blues would have won it 30.1
percent of the time after a thousand simulations that means the leafs won yeah yeah well because
man the deserve to win-o-meter takes into account most normal nhl teams score on the power i wonder
if money puck knew when they created that how much it would take off there was a time when the
deserve to win a meter was like unquestioned i remember the leafs would lose in the playoffs
and they're like look though they won the deserve to win a meter and i remember tweeting like uh
that's not the game though and it's like oppenheimer yeah yeah money puck.com sitting
there being like we don't know what we created i mean it's amazing we've ruined the world
poor money puck hey they're taking a lot of shit for this but it's it's it's their greatest
creation this is an interesting tool yeah mean anything yes it it no jesse it means something
no it means the leafs should have won and that means they did win on saturday cool is that i
watched that game and thought the leaf should have won this game yeah but they didn't go figure
like uh for me it's the did the goalie freaking job us-o-meter like either the goalie on the
other team or ours yeah and by the way stop making jordan bennington look good guys like he he's not
66% of his wins this season have come against the Leafs.
I hate it.
He's going to be Team Canada's starter.
There's no who Offer is.
Dude, Canada is in such a bad way.
I don't remember if it was TSN or Sportsnet.
They had Joel Hoffer on the screen.
Yeah.
He's not even the best Canadian goalie on the Blues.
What are you talking about?
I think it's because he was the backup at the World Championships.
that like when you do things for team canada they kind of reward you so but i don't think that's
not how the other guy john gillies they're just they're showing him there for an exam like this
is the list you know it's not he's not gonna be on the team they did say that if you want to play
for the four nations team or the olympic team you better go to the world championship you're invited
and i get that uh but i also would say team canada pick the best player yeah it's the long
list yes they're doing he's joel hoffer's got to be on the long list because canada's goaltending
sucks i think if you're not and i'm biased here uh but if you're not including mark andre flurry
on that list on that team you're out of your freaking mind who won a gold medal in 2010
he was in a suit but he was on the team it'd be i think you're going you got to go experience
i think you got to go experience with that if canada were to win i'm trying to think of how
many players from the 2010 team would i think it's just crosby and flurry i can't think of anyone
else uh well um if you're going experience i think the correct answer would be cam talbot
would it not i think flurry's got a way better resume than cam talbot no currently this season
i think cam talbot has the best save percentage over every canadian yes he does yeah so yeah
all-star last year why not both you gotta bring you gotta bring three why not both would nix out
Aiden Hill which I don't think you can do why couldn't you bring Aiden Hill then you're joining
Binnington I think it has to be Binnington when was okay when was Binnington last good
other than against the Leafs last year yeah really good season okay and then after before that he had
three bad ones no Adam when was he last in the last year good for a sustained amount of time
This guy has never had put together two back-to-back great years in a row.
I think that's the conversation right now.
It's those four.
And Montembeau is quickly playing himself out of it.
Oh, yeah, because the Leafs just made him look good.
Skinner can't, like, do anything right now.
Skinner should have sauntered.
If the Four Nations top was in June, Skinner would be your guy.
He should have sauntered into that spot with slippers on.
Like, hey, what's up?
And he might not even make the team.
I know.
By the way, it's worth mentioning the Minnesota Wild,
who the Leafs lost to are 8-1-2 this year.
What the hell?
It took until game seven for them to trail.
That's nuts.
Bananas.
They didn't end up setting the record, by the way.
Someone in the LFR goes,
hey, how's your season prediction for the Wild looking?
I'm like, how's your season prediction for the Wild going?
None of you called this.
I didn't see anyone say, oh, yeah,
they would have one regulation loss in freaking 11 games.
Get out of my face.
I don't think Bill Guerin, if you'd said, hey, you're going to start 6-5-1,
he'd be like, okay.
Oh.
That's great.
I think that he would have been okay with that.
Yeah, we got some improvement, but that'll be okay.
Not 8-1-2.
Stop it.
8-1-2.
Get out of my face.
Kaprizov.
Oh, Hayden with a great point before the show.
Leave it to the Leafs to finally score a power play goal.
hold the league's leading scorer pointless
for, I believe, just the second time this season
and lose.
Ah, yes.
That was Capriza.
I think heading into that game,
he had points in nine of 10
and they lost.

So I want to talk to you guys about the Islanders for a second.
I brought up Brock Nelson.
But Elliott Friedman on Hockey Night in Canada said that the Islanders are looking for some defense.
They got Pelich, Romanov, and Mike Riley out.
Barzal and Pelich, by the way, are going to be out four to six weeks each.
That has Team Canada implications.
and and i was thinking hey hey they need defense huh that's interesting where do they rank in goals
for where do the islanders rank in goals for i i don't care as long as they want matt benning i'll
say 30 um okay or 31st or 37 i'm gonna be optimistic i'm gonna say 24th jesse you got it
on the second one it's 31st oh shit i knew they were way down there now their pdo is super low
uh but uh 28 goals this year that is second least the only the anaheim ducks have scored less goals
and i know that the islanders are and and i sure matt benning seems like a perfect fit for them to
be honest but if they're making a short-term buy on defense they ought to make a long-term buy on
offense which is what their fans have been saying for half of a decade forever and like across
coaches what's nuts about this situation and i think this is the bummer part for islanders fans
is i've been seeing more than ever a lot of cries for okay lou time to step down
and the issue now with all these injuries is uh well we just got injured
hey i got injured it's not my fault the injury bug strikes i mean in fairness we are giving that
courtesy to the avalanche yes but the avalanche have a cup recently and a playoff and not missed
the play the expectations are just way i think in the situation for the islanders injuries can give
you a little bit of leeway it's five guys who should be in the lineup who are not playing who
are they again so barzal you said barzal pelich romanov riley yeah duclair oh duclair oh and du
claire yeah the way who you brought in to help with your goal scoring right and the barzal like
a lot of the offense is going to drive through him like it's a real the guys who are out are
real concerns and i feel like there's a little bit of leeway here but they do need help obviously
because injuries aren't an excuse but injuries are the reason they're struggling so right right
uh if i were the islanders i would be looking for goals how many teams are just scared to death to
put anyone on waivers oh i think right now a lot dude there's like at least three or four teams
that are that should just be vultures because they have i can't every time i look at the
avalanche roster i'm like that's made up how have the utah uh have the utah hockey club
not called about matt benning how have they not you know how are they not getting like you need
you need to maybe they are you need like i'm looking at utah i'm looking at montreal uh
they're montreal's defense needs help i mean he was also a depth defenseman on the sharks like
I think a lot of those teams think they can get,
if you're down in the standings,
you can just pick up Benning for free
if the Leafs got to waive him.
They don't have to give the Leafs an asset
unless you want to skip the waiver order.
That's probably what they're going to end up doing.
Yeah, try to flip him if you can, for sure.
But otherwise, just meh.
Here you go, Marlies.
Yeah, the roster crunch that's coming
because the cap crunch seems to be solved
with Benning going to be out the door
and Lilligren already gone.
They can fit Hockenpah and Dewar,
but they got to create the roster space.
That'll be Matt Benning and, like,
Philippe Meyers can probably go.
He, I believe, already has cleared waivers.
Yeah, so, like, I feel like a big trade for the Leafs
doesn't necessarily have to be on the table
if you just want to move those two guys.
I'm going to look up...
Yeah, I'm with you, Jesse.
To me, too, like, for anybody to say,
well, the Leafs have got to make a move here.
Unless there's some sort of cap thing, why?
they don't just make them fight for it actually make them make them work for it and if connor
duer comes in and is uh a better defensive younger cheaper david kampf well you got an answer you got
a centerman who's up for sale at the trade deadline yeah and if people like if david kampf
has to learn that he's on the outside looking in on the roster and sit in the press box for a little
that'll be good for the team for competition and then maybe that's an asset you can move after
you've discovered that he's not fit for the lineup but it doesn't hurt to also have extra bodies
because injuries happen
as we're talking
about the Islanders
every time.
Myers will not clear
like if he gets placed
on waivers.
No, but I think
that's an expendable piece,
right?
For the roster
because what you're doing
is you're trading
Hawk and Paw for Myers
because the only reason
you've been able
to maintain this
extra roster space
is because you didn't
have Hawk and Paw.
So in order to add
Hawk and Paw,
you got to take off
what you've been having
in terms of a luxury
in roster spots.
Yeah, but I think
after having way
too many guys
at that point,
you're now dangerously
close to,
oh, fuck,
we're an injury away from catastrophe you know but that's what the team would have been if
everybody was healthy i know i can't believe how solid timmons has been like i there's not a game
where he's looked like oh you're coming out with no he didn't show these defensive chops under keef
like the ability to grind along the boards like maybe they had a chat with him and said listen
if you want to make it you got to do these things and he was like cool gotcha i like some players
are like that Craig Berube seems to be a pretty easy coach to play for well as long as you he
tells you what he needs you to do as long as you do it that's why Robertson is has only sat a
couple games the reality of Nick Robertson on this team is is he getting the results no but is he a
hundred fifty thousand percent every time he steps on the ice I've never seen him take a shift off
no he doesn't take a shift off but like sometimes that leads to like enormous giveaways sure would
rather have that than what they've had in the past boy him and holmberg have set like we had a poor
bar ask ask ask me about galchenyuk in the playoffs ask me about you want to talk about
anyways let's talk about dermot spinorama no so we don't if like if we're going to talk about
giving 100 i'm down i'm down with what nick robertson's doing the goals will come and just
last thing on the roster situation the the cap crunch you'll get is when yarn croak comes back
Yes, because Dewar and Hockenpah, they fit in the salary cap right now.
It's about the roster spots, but Yarncroke doesn't.
His $2.1 million doesn't fit with all three of those guys.
So maybe somebody gets injured between now and when Yarncroke is ready,
which would be helpful for the roster, but obviously bad for the roster
if you're taking away a guy.
Or by the time Yarncroke is ready, you've got to make another move for the cap.
So we'll see when that comes around.
something something about me wonders about david conf and like calgary because calgary needs they
they're they're wanting defense or they want forwards now now they're like okay we we we
they said it first weekend of the year they're like we're on a winning streak and they've been
bad well first and foremost you can't uh make a trade with calgary oh yeah brad you're living
with the gm and their children but but the other thing is uh that means replacing costco
you can't replace costco what does that mean what are you talking about justin kirkland
oh you're right you're right you're right you're right you're right fair enough um okay i want to
ask you guys this was that the conversation on the islanders the leafs well yeah uh i mean
shit they need guys damn wonder what they do nothing probably um well they'll go get are you
You're out on Lou.
I'm out on Lou, man.
The problem with the Islanders has been clear forever.
Isles fans are not stupid.
They're passionate.
They sometimes get a little stupid with the passion, but I can relate.
And I'll tell you, man, they fucking know what's wrong with this team.
And Jesse, you nailed it when you said it.
Well, Barzal's out and a lot of the offense goes for him.
Isn't that the fucking problem?
Get the man some help.
yeah the man is an 82 year old as the president and gm of the islanders it's too old uh i don't
have a problem i mean yeah it's 82 like go to the beach but like i don't have a problem with
lou lamorello being the president of my hockey team delegate no some duties here like he can't
And that's why I have a problem with it.
Be a governor.
Be a sit on the board.
Sorry, but we need new.
Are you telling me?
And Lou has a GM award named after.
This man's done everything that you need to do.
Are you telling me there is not someone even within those doors who doesn't think that they could do it better?
Hey, I'll give you.
I'm sure there is.
I'll give you a title I wouldn't mind him holding.
Commissioner.
I think he's well past that.
That's a lot more.
That's too much work, I think.
that's a that's a busy job too much he's he's within what five years of Gary Bettman he's 82
it's just old dude that's a but you know the difference between 75 and 80 I know it's a big
it's a and yeah we've got a very up close gander at that over the last few months it's enormous
and so I think I'm not saying it's because of his age I'm saying it's because the ideas are dated
and it's time to move on I I think you need somebody in there who's gonna listen hiring
patrick waugh was bold and it seemed to work out for them a little bit uh you still gave him the
same team yeah and if and if duclair is the guy that you're like this will solve all of our
goaltending or goal scoring ills that's not fair to declare well i mean i'm gonna score he's not
gonna score 50 generally speaking if you're like this one player on our 20 person team is going to
fix everything then you iso them a player one thing to back up your discussion about like hey
this is probably roster construction just from a strictly numbers standpoint the new york islanders
are fifth in the entire league in total shots for on net they rank 32nd in shooting percentage so
are they wildly unlucky or are they just pounding the net with garbage exactly so i i take from that
is hey yes your shooting percentage is probably going to regress a little up i think it's at like
6.8 percent or whatever it's last but you also don't have the skill to finish like they don't
have a roster that's going to capitalize on all these shots that they're peppering on the net
to finish and score goals so and that requires down to you haven't you don't have enough high
end offensive talent and that's a gm issue absolutely absolutely you needed a guy like
vlad teresenko who can who can he's not gonna give you much defense but he sure can score goals and
that's an art it's an art right no what they truly needed was like an austin matthews well
for somewhere along this line to have picked up that generational score because i don't remember
the last time we could say like that existed on those guys and those guys it's maybe not austin's
level jesse but to your point where's martin niches drafted what spot um uh i'm gonna i'm
just gonna look it up yeah maybe not even generational score but like he's a really
great goal he's a 12th overall pick right the islanders for sure could have drafted a guy like
that you're telling me you haven't been able to find a jake debrusk a philip heidel uh uh and
philip he doesn't even broken out the way we think they've gotten guys it's all on the back end like
no adoption is one of the best offensive defensemen oh yeah that's cool i have him in
fantasy he's got six assists steve yeah because he can't do everything yes it's the same problem
with the sabers how many gigantic defensemen are you going to draft before you go we should
probably add up front you just know they they built their identity and then they didn't do
anything around it like all their their bang and crash bottom sixers are like ancient um by
athletic standards it's not working i know but you know it's the injury bug it certainly couldn't
be the decision making no the i mean it's just listen they're they're not deep enough to survive
what they're going through not every team is a lot of teams aren't most teams aren't but the
really good ones are last thing i'll close just for more stats to just emphasize the point we're
making the last time the new york islanders had a 40 goal scorer was the 2017 2018 season when
anders lee scored 40 goals oh man i thought you were gonna say jason blake for sure no which would
have been crazy that's that's a long time wow wow man they sure could use andre lee don't you think
he's a good player andre yeah he got oh i got it i got it thank you jesse you didn't laugh you
didn't laugh it was maybe it was not i didn't get it i'm not sure maybe it was not good it was
cheeky i was trying to be cheeky it was cheeky i got big cheeks you know i'm trying yeah thank you
oh thank you i don't know that many years 2018 is not a short time ago no it's not man through
that time you don't like brock nelson scored i think like 37 in that time but i'm talking like
40 goals is a good round number to mark like hey we got in this era yeah in this era there's
there's 20 guys every year going past 40 goals talent yeah oh god they haven't seen the offensive
boom that basically everyone else you know why because they didn't attempt it now let's move on
to denmark oh move on to denmark i would like to start with a little bit of trivia
nicolai ehlers now jesse warm chocolate no not quite although i do have something on sweden later
i do want i do have something we should make warm chocolate christmas sweaters
Can we make, can we sell chocolate, hot chocolate?
No, no.
I don't want to get that deep in the weeds.
We are not the Green Brothers.
Jeez.
I like that.
Like Hank Green.
Anyways, go ahead.
All right.
So, Nick Ehlers, what happened this weekend?
Do you know what happened?
No.
Okay.
He became the highest scoring player ever from Denmark.
Hey!
Winnipeg Jets played a fantastic game against Tampa
where like hellebuck allowed a bunch of four goals and wasn't that early jesse and then they
battled then they won the game that's great despite despite the winning connor hellebuck
despite oh the hellebuck fraud watch by the way by the way the the jets have one loss this year
guess who it's two that's exactly who that's right uh so ehlers has 474 points he passed a player
with 473.
Who was the previous
highest scoring player
from Denmark?
And I did not realize
this player had scored that much.
From Denmark.
It is a forward, I assume.
It is a forward.
The center shoots left.
How much do you weigh?
Yeah.
What's his height?
Oh, no.
Six feet.
What do you play for?
186 pounds.
Who do you play for?
Ah, hold on.
Well, I want him to, I want to see if he can, who he play for?
Yeah, who do you play for?
What teams?
Three.
Three teams.
Okay.
New York.
Actually, two teams.
New York.
New York, which?
And Detroit.
Which New York?
Isles.
Okay.
The Islanders and the Red Wings.
Player from Denmark.
What?
It feels like it's right there.
What century?
Oh, it's this century.
The 2000s.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Actually, retired recently after winning the DEL Cup,
whatever it's called, with the Berlin Polar Bears.
Thank you.
I want to know what that jersey looks like.
The German League actually has some really cool teams.
Berlin Polar Bears.
Oh, it's a great jersey.
Oh, my God.
They used to have, I don't know if they still do,
but they had the Augsburg Grizzly Adams.
Jesse, I'm sending you something.
I'm sending you something.
Send.
Oh, my God.
Just, just.
Once we're done this, we're bringing up.
We should go to the all-star game that's happening in Long Island in 2026.
In Long Island?
In Long Island.
I would like to be in Long Island.
Okay, Vanica's Austria.
It's on the tip of my tongue.
I can't do it.
Franz Nielsen.
Damn it!
What?
Franz Nielsen.
Franz Nielsen.
Did not ever make the playoffs when he played for the Detroit Red Wings.
How sad is that?
Oh!
That sucks.
Did he ever play in the playoffs?
He did with the Islanders.
There you go.
11 games in 15, 16, 7 in 14, 15, and 6 in 12, 13.
But, yeah, he only played 24 career playoff games.
He went through the bad Islanders years just to go,
I'm going to Detroit.
What could go wrong?
Famine and famine.
Yeah, for the start of the bad Detroit years.
Now, Jesse, I just sent you something.
The Berlin Polar Bears.
Oh, it's these guys.
Yeah, but Jesse.
So, first off, the logos are sick.
And that's Danny Breyer.
And who's the other guy?
Claude Giroux.
Claude Giroux, and he's young.
Oh, my God, look how young he looks.
but can you bring up the mascot please the mascot for the berlin berlin polar bears
you need to see this is it a polar bear that looks like he does cocaine
that's what the logo is that's what the logo is not i don't know quite that no um no steve's about
right yeah you think yeah this guy nightmares nightmares steve there he is look at his thing
There he is.
I couldn't help it.
It's there.
That's a scary mascot.
Oh, yeah.
What?
That's a good mascot.
The hell?
I assume no kids go to these games.
This looks like a polar bear costume you got at Spirit Halloween for like 50 bucks.
Like they did not invest a lot in this mascot.
Very German.
Very efficient.
Cost efficient, Jesse.
Cost efficient.
Look at the gloves.
like yeah the gloves are like just gloves yeah oh we put some fur on it it's so north america
versus europe oh like we have carl the bear he's so cute and cuddly and this is europe
bear not cuddly bears scary and terrifying yeah this is oh my god generic scary polar bear costume
it's simply a polar bear if you listen to this look this up it's not that's your homework like
it's not mascot like no like the carlton bear example is perfect no that's like mascot that's
like i shot that polar bear and stuffed it yeah this is a guy wearing a polar bear suit and i can
see half the guy even hunter from the oilers is a little too realistic but it's got enough cartoon
in it i love ah this is silly hunter is fantastic this yeah this might just be a murdered polar bear
that someone lives in
during a hockey game.
From like West Prussia.
No, that might be a real polar bear.
Floated in on an ice floe.
Paul McCartney went to the Arctic
and killed this himself
while seal clubbing.
Why Paul McCartney?
Doesn't he club seals or something?
I don't know.
Anyway.
Like the Beatles, Paul McCartney?
Yeah.
Adam, confirm or deny?
That he shot a polar bear?
I don't know.
I don't think so.
I'm so tired, bro.
Paul McCartney is a vegan.
oh maybe he's like against it then yeah i would think maybe that's what it is yeah
i don't know bro leave me alone leave me alone that's a terrifying polar bear uh okay so um
i wanted to uh i wanted to run you guys through this um i can't remember if he's pro or anti
clubbing now this is it's worth reading this is james myrtle friend of the show
paul mccartney was sent into space with a polar bear called simon no uh ai i think that is the
world's worst ai did melton space too like what happened i mean probably poor paul like that
that's him actually going that's the g-force bringing his cheeks down look at him i i don't
know guys i'm reading this article on medium about paul mccartney being sent into space with
polar bear called simon and there he is there's pictures to prove it by the way um i i can't
unsee this meme but there's a meme floating around out there that like paul mccartney looks
like your aunt who's really proud of you and i can't unsee that you're telling me this isn't real
gentlemen i have a question it looks like if paul mccartney was taken over by the alien who
like goes water from men in black sugar sugar and water okay guys uh james myrtle uh put out
an article about uh you know he said it's one month of the season what's real and what's not
so if teams were to maintain their current pace and and it's it'd be very hard for teams like
winnipeg to do that but if they did um who would have the biggest swing in point differential last
year to this year and i start with positive oh let's start with positive because there's a
positive side of this and a negative side has to be minnesota it is minnesota yeah if they
continued this pace they'd finish with 134 points holy shit 47 point differential break the bruins
record what's the bruins record is it they said uh what two years ago one third wasn't it 130
something 130 65 games 65 wins i mean that's 130 on its own how many plus a few shootout and
overtime losses i will just check a 135 so they would come in just under right but the jets would
break it the jets would break it because they'd be at 150 points up from 110 so wait the wild are
eight one and two and they're not score they're not winning at a high enough percentage of their
games to pass the bruins who won 65 that's right that's insane yeah oh wow holy shit well yeah and
that's the thing right is the differential too that we're just talking about with ashley this
year uh third on that list are the Washington Capitals who have the 30th best power play in
the league which is crazy they're winning all these games and not scoring on the power play
uh 91 points last year they're on pace right now for 119 which feels somewhat closer to sustainable
although not quite a little high 28 point swing even a buckle five puts you in a really good spot
at number four carolina hurricanes 111 points last year they're on pace for 131 and we were
like in our season previews we were really hard on them like who's gonna play for these guys
doesn't give you an idea of the washington capitals who said 119 yeah the rangers won
the president's trophy with 114 points right so not wow yeah carolina hurricanes on pace for 131
points and the one that's the most interesting and perhaps actually could happen because none
of those seem like they're possible okay totally possible to expect the jets to win 80 games is i
think it's unrealistic well it would be more like 72 one loss a month i love how you said 80 because
they play the leafs twice yeah yeah they gotta lose the leafs twice and then win every other game
jesse sure what what did you just say about the new york rangers what they win with 114 114 points
which is down from 135 the year before so that's our no i'm kidding that's yeah and by the way the
panthers won it the year before that and they had a goofy amount of points too like crazy
so one team is on pace they had 98 points last year they're on pace for 116 this year
and i think hey that's believable to me did they make the playoffs that's a good question i i think
i know who it is because i've been really disappointed in myself and that i wasn't
hyping them up preseason okay uh and who is that is it the vegas golden night it is the vegas golden
Thanks, Jesse.
Oh, Mark Stone.
Yeah, dude.
They've been everything they should have been the tail end of last season.
Yes.
Like, they've been fantastic to start the year.
Ilya Samsonov caught some strays earlier this show.
He, I mean, he's had a couple bad games, but he's been, by and large.
And Adam, how could you not forget the round one against Dallas
where the Vegas went up 2-0.
Oh, yes.
And then failed to close it out against Dallas.
They went 2-0.
they went up 2-0 on the road like fuck that is i mean that's an insane every year there's one
first round series where it should be illegal that those two teams are playing each other and
that was it well the nhl decided to have the most goofy alignment ever for the playoffs yes they
sure did like no those two teams playing each other first round embarrassing embarrassing stuff
and by the way uh in a one through eight system uh when an eighth place team beats a one or a
seventh place team beats a two it's a great story and we're getting that stolen from us oh we do get
1-8 i guess well but i but a i i think a 2-7 and a 1-8 far easier to understand uh way more fun now
and i think last year they would have played each other regardless yeah dallas was one in the west
and vegas was eight don't forget vegas spent like drunken sailors and we're like okay they still
might miss the playoffs it didn't matter though they had hannafin and hurdle yeah you you still
have them they're mr playoffs you still have them they're fine um okay who has had the biggest swing
in the negative column number one if things continue this way it's a negative 39 on the
stat sheet for points uh they had a good weekend though boston not boston damn edmonton not
edmonton oh edmonton's in the top 10 but barely we're talking about a disaster right now schville
oh nashville yeah nashville is second on the list boston is third this team is still worse
oh my gosh abs avalanche oh okay 107 points to they're on pace for currently 68
oh shit it's worth noting the nashville predators are on pace for 67 macar has been absolutely
cracked so has ranton by the way yeah absolutely cracked and they're still that bad that's how
injured they are holy now i look at the avalanche and i go that's i don't think it's sustainably
sustainably bad but i think that they have so many issues that it's difficult if they miss the
playoffs this year i'd be like i'm not even i'm not even gonna get upset about it they'll be back
right the injuries are insane yeah nashville has just been playing bad uh but that could be a bunch
of new guys injected in the system boston i mean i get tired of betting against boston
one thing though that i think is sustainable are the bottom four and bottom five teams okay
both tied at negative 26 one had 94 points last year they're on pace for 68 one had 87 last year
now on pace for 62 can you name them one of those teams has to be the penguins neither of the teams
are those paying really the penguins are seventh on this list with a negative 19 differential but
we're talking about two teams with a negative 26 if things continue then one of those teams has to
be the flyers one of those teams is yeah that would be number five uh the projection is and
again they'll go on winning streaks but 87 to 62 points is currently what they're on track for
i think of that as a more much in the way vegas at five on the positive differential
it seems sustainable the flyers look sustainably bad
hard to read i mean it's so hard to be competitive if you don't know what goal he's going to give
you a chance to win and arison going down and yeah and arson's already like not great
oh boy that's tough i was trying to see how long he's going to be out because yeah i saw that
that injury and i was like that just sucks for a team that already has no goaltending but
i don't know the timeline on his availability um who's the other they're looking they're looking
it's a freeman reported that it was about a week about a week still sucks that but you're going to
reevaluate then and see how it goes right that's sucks for the flyers especially because mitch
goss having such like a great rookie season and he got benched but yes absolutely well absolutely
but man that was the best waiver pickup i made none of the neither the leagues that i had crazy
nobody drafted him last i checked on him he had nine points in nine games but was a minus nine
jeez so here what what what is he at now uh mitch goff's got nine points in 12 games minus eight
yeah that's pretty bad dude like yeah a little bit of a slump there i assume that's not i mean
he's a rookie like right he's not going to be the pinnacle of defensive ability like to me that's
surrounding him with uh better talent yeah i mean to to get a guy scoring at 0.75 clip like just
dropped out of the sky is pretty good for any team yeah he's got to be the calder front runner
i'd say right now yeah especially because celebrini played one game and then who has been
out yeah ever since but he's trending towards coming back so we'll see how that goes but
yeah mishkoff great start sucks for the flyers that they can't get any of the roster who's the
other team number four on the list so you got abs preds bruins blank team flyers they had how many
points last year this team 94 94 so they would have missed they did miss but they would have
been right there right uh it's not the pens because you already mentioned them east or west
east oh east oh detroit no no detroit tied with uh they did detroit had more points yeah detroit
would have had more points because they tied with washington who's just below detroit uh this no
just buffalo didn't get just no buffalo wasn't there just talking about them the islanders the
new york islanders oh there you go yeah who made the playoff they're that bad 94 oh they did make
the playoffs yeah they did make the playoffs yeah the island the islanders made the playoffs last
year they got swept oh fuck that's why i don't remember it uh the playoffs were such a blur like
i i or they they won one game they're on pace they got we you and i both picked them to beat
the hurricanes and look really stupid yeah uh 68 points is what they're on pace for currently that's
not great it's not great now i will mention this uh the edmonton oilers on pace for a negative 15
and the leafs are on pace for a negative 14 uh some of these look sustainable i don't think the
islanders one is not sustainable uh with the injuries i don't worry about the least one
because they have a literally identical record to last year after 13 i'm not worried every november
they go on a winning streak the oilers are probably ahead of where they were this time last
year like far ahead um and that's still yeah they should look year over year rather than like last
year as a whole like what what did you do in october last year right two and five canadians

um now a couple of things uh the nhlpa is finally going to do something for uh concussions uh and
there was a familiar name in this uh frank servali had it for daily face off alan walsh is i believe
a part of this as well uh but marty walsh announced the formation of a committee uh for
the nhlpa executive board in june they kept it under wraps until friday the new committee will
be the NHLPA CTV advisory CTE excuse me advisory committee which will initially be comprised of 10
active players I believe Darnell Nurse is already included and expand representation for all 32
teams eventually and they will be guided by medical experts the new committee is expected
to meet a few times per year and the player selected to chair the committee has not yet
been announced the NHLPA according to Marty Walsh is is a the NHLPA starting a committee is huge for
the players sorry this is not Marty Walsh this is where the name comes in and I apologize the
NHLPA, starting a committee is huge
for the players. They need to choose their
own destiny, and I don't think they've
been getting the truth from the NHL. That's Dr.
Chris Nowinski, who was a
who came on Agent Provocateur
with us a couple of years ago, Jess. It was a
while ago, and Chris Nowinski... I think it was
last season. Oh, was it? Yeah. Former
WWE wrestler. That's what I was going to say, and
he's now the CEO of the Concussion Legacy
Foundation and the co-founder of
Boston University CTE Center.
I highly, highly, highly encourage you
to check out that episode
because he's so well-spoken.
And this is a former pro wrestler
who's now working at Harvard
on head injury.
So it's somebody that,
you know,
this isn't just some guy
that went to med school.
This is somebody
that athletes will go,
oh, okay,
I can relate to that.
Right?
And I don't,
that's not to take away
from the medical community,
but you know,
sometimes somebody
that's done sports
at a high level,
high contact,
repeated contact,
sometimes there's
that trust factor there.
I don't know why,
but it's human nature.
It's good to have
a translator of sorts.
and he's also very smart this guy yes also it was 2022 when he came on 2022 i believe yeah and not
harvard uh bu oh sorry boston you know why did i say harvard his harvard was i believe his wrestling
persona ah that's what it is i went to harvard and i was better than you or i am better than you
yeah yeah that's funny that's so funny that his persona was he went to harvard but he actually
went to BU yeah no well he doesn't go to BU right now he founded the concussion studies that are
going on I understand yeah yeah so what does this mean in the long term well we're going to talk
about it with Alan this week okay and he's going to kind of explain on agent provocateur what
exactly this means because you guys know that the league's just denying that oh there hasn't been
enough research done they'll say oh yeah sure CTE might exist but uh there's no research to say that
hockey players and look up stan makita look up his brain look at some of the other ones yeah uh
it's it's very clear that there is and the nhl isn't going to do anything about it they've said
as much so the pa needs to do something and this is what and i think this goes to a bigger
conversation an active players association looks like the players association for the nhl went to
sleep for six or seven years donald fear did decades of damage to the nhlpa i don't know what
he was doing but marty walsh collecting a salary does stuff man this guy's doing stuff
like his first like month on the job he's got to fly to columbus to check out the babcock stuff
dude it's the player like the guy's in there like it's the like what i said on the show for years
is until the players give a shit i won't care um like if they don't care why should i and marty
walsh has come in and done um his job he's energized them yeah i like that he's yeah he's
he does stuff not cowardly ducking the media like an asshole like just oh brutal so so this is no i
wasn't even the media it was what's that donald fear story he like ducked his union yeah there's
a bunch of stuff out there i we don't i don't know the particulars of that particular that story but
it's not sucks yeah um but it's getting the the and the thing is i was encouraged to see darnell
nurse's name in there because what you usually see with the nhlpa with this stuff it's like oh
um ron hainsey is the the big representative or um it's important to have a big name you need
big names and big contracts when you see the nba pa go to meet the owners it's lebron it was chris
paul it's kairi irving it's the big names it the nhlpa for many years has been here you peasants
handle it yeah let the let those get we're just gonna go make our money and i think what's
happening and this is what i'm hearing from people in the game is the pa is now energized
and the players are now far more aware of especially with the explosion of contracts
in the nba and the already enormous contracts in the mlb they're far more aware of the fact and
the fact that all 32 teams are now worth more than a billion dollars and you know if you owned a team
five years ago it's now worth 10x what it used to be uh or 5x even the players are not participating
in that they're not making much more money than they were five years ago and so for them being a
part of a union they're saying uh we need to participate in this in this wealth as well we
are the product and i think that you're going to see more stuff going into this next cba negotiation
not stuff that i think is going to shut the league down for a season but i think that the next cba
will have some things in it that will be very very interesting and will maybe potentially
break this hard cap a little bit which is i think what the players need now i want to move on
because alan tweeted something a few minutes ago and i want to know what you guys thought
There are rumors, according to Alan Walsh, that the IIHF are putting together a proposal for the Olympics.
For what?
What do we think?
2030.
No, no, no.
I'm not talking about dates.
I'm talking about a sport.
IIHF.
Three-on-three hockey.
That's right.
Major League Hockey, Steve.
Oh.
I just thought you might be interested.
Now, I think three-on-three hockey as a separate sport for the Olympics could be pretty sick.
Well, the three-on-three basketball was awesome to watch.
Yeah.
You didn't like it?
It was okay.
I didn't think it was the best, but it's different.
It's not five-on-five basketball.
It's a difference how they play the game.
It's different.
Three-on-three hockey is different.
Yeah.
To me, the Olympics is full of sports that are on.
They're just on.
and can i turn on the tv and watch it and be like this rules right um and the olympics are actually
full of that like stuff that like okay you couldn't do an 82 game season worth of this
necessarily um dude i'd watch the hell out of that i wonder who's gonna play yeah i was talking
about the three-on-three basketball i thought it was it was okay hockey i'd watch yeah i i think
it's interesting too because people were commenting like hey what up why hasn't ball hockey made it
and it's like that's not what the double ihf does i agree i think it should be a summer sport i'd
watch the shit out of that i would i would totally watch ball hockey but i do think three on three
hockey especially in olympic context makes sense if rugby sevens makes sense so does three on three
yeah i think floorball if ball hockey floorball is in the that other olympics that's like goofy
stuff like drone racing is that stuff no no they have they have some other i'll look it up but no
um drone racing olympics but i think floorball should be an olympic sport for john boy games
or warehouse games sorry no there's this other the world games have you guys heard of the world
games oh no the world games have a bunch of goofy um sports and i believe floorball is one of them
i think we've talked about this on the show i've always thought it's weird that like motor racing
is not included in the summer olympics too that i feel like the juice wouldn't be worth the squeeze
if you gave everybody the same car and it was bad where do you put the track oh every every
olympic hosting venue has a track like france had a track they have a race track do a do a round
robin do something yeah you should have it floorball is a sport at the world games but other
uh sports at the world games include like billiards um they have that i love that bowling
isn't a current one but it used to be uh they have dances they fistball what is fistball jiu-jitsu
karate kickboxing corfball ever heard of corfball corfball lacrosse is in there andy in theirs
um they have roller sports this is the recess games yeah yeah they have a bunch of the other
stuff that like aren't quite good enough for the olympics did you say four square yeah i was gonna
say four square four square rules man such a good game no it doesn't look like they have four square
what about um foot hockey like where goalies can use their jacket as as their equipment they don't
have that no no too bad no too bad uh hey but yeah the floor balls it's been competed at
international competitions is the whole point i was trying to say is that like countries send
teams for floorball and um uh so it's they have this body already just in certain to the olympics
yeah and that would be a great canada sport because canada is not great at the summer olympics
sometimes and sometimes sometimes they were good this time yes they're getting better but uh but
i think that at listen we got to stack the deck in our favor here we're small country well one way
to stack the deck is get like two good swimmers and they did there's like what 30 medals up for
yeah yeah it's true uh good uh jesse i want to bring this up or do you have it uh you have my
text available there can you throw that on the screen up so steven you've played nhl games for
a long long time you have your dangle navy group chat which jesse and i are not involved in somehow
and you never will be uh but you have a dangle navy team that you guys played with and during
the pandemic specifically you guys got really good yeah we haven't played for a while yeah
yeah but but there are you know you guys have everybody's got a position yep everybody's got
things that they're good at things that they're not good at yep uh and that's really exciting
when you play nhl not with your team you play like uh drop-ins drop-ins or you don't play online
let's just say you're just playing for abandon what is missing what's the one thing that sticks
out you go ah it's a little not real it's a little not real uh i don't where are you going with this
well for me it's always been and i noticed it specifically when jesse was doing his streams
about the Buffalo Sabres is he remember he hired Jason Spetz as a coach because he replaced and I
fired him he replaced a guy yeah yeah he just replaced a guy whoever guy was today uh the
Clapperton who is actually a member of the uh the group that puts this all together announced that
they are putting real world NHL coaches into NHL 25 oh my god how did it take so long to get that
so here's a deal with the with the players the coaches association so they probably just finalized
a deal today or recently you know how great is that because madden so madden's had real world
coaches for for time now but bill belichick has never been available to be a coach in the game
because he's always sat out of whatever deal that the coaches association signs with the with ea
sports in the league and that sort of he refuses to give his license his his likeness to the game
so the entire history of madden bill belichick's never been in there and it's been just a hilarious
to me so it's cool to see that nhl got that done yeah very cool i love that and it's very
appropriate that they're like torts is in a video game there's a reason they picked him now uh there
is one more thing i want to hit before we do the press conference if in fact we are doing the press
conference jesse uh is jacob oster who uh joined us on our oshawa generals episode last week he
was so good he was so good he was the goalie for the oshawa generals i just wanted to give him a
shout out because he got his 50th ohl win this past weekend wow five zero pretty rare to get 50
it is it is it uh wow holy crap i mean when you play as many games as him i think maybe it gives
you a leg up yeah he played 60 games last year he did that's so many games i wonder what he can
push it to i i mean it's early right can you get it can you get it to 75 what's the record i i okay
hold on let me see you have to play a stupid amount of games on a stupidly good team for
like three years it's really hard like a hundred wins okay all right extremely rare so so okay
you'll be blown away by how many people have a ton a hundred wins oh uh they have there's five
guys and you don't know any of them jp anderson kyle gijowski uh joseph ray makers andrew angelage
devin williams and adam dennis and yeah yeah michael di pietro who you'd know oh yeah 98
damn um uh yeah like it's k whitmore who's been very involved in oh yeah uh the game
on and off the ice as a coach and and many other things k whitmore at 93
um but like you know you have to think too a lot of these guys are guys that started younger
and then you know in their older years they're just dominating some of these kids right
jordan binnington 86 i believe that the owen sound attack uh were pretty good pretty damn good right
uh so i'm just kind of looking through names mackenzie blackwood at 84 uh john van beesbrook
82 uh so yeah but it's it's a very it's an interesting list but that is quite the accomplishment
50 50 wins is it's big by ohl standards you're there and gone but his goal is the memorial cup
Right. The Oshawa generals. That's right. Shall we do the press conference? Sure. Let's do it.
Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer. That's why every step and dollar

Foundation Walk. Challenge yourself, friends, and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of
life-saving research together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear
of cancer register today at pmcfwalk.ca the steve dangle press conference
we have an nhl headline submitted by a member of our discord on our discord on the press
conference questions maybe let's go thread on our discord server which you can find in the link in
the description andrew submitted a nhl headline the the little sub headline on nhl.com reads
hughes brothers set to share ice again tonight when devils visit canucks so this was uh before
the Canucks and Devils games.
The picture in the headline on NHL.com
is a picture of the three Hughes brothers.
Can you give me, Steve and Adam,
the headline that NHL.com went with?
How about refuse to Hughes?
Instead of refuse to lose.
No?
Hmm.
No?
Hmm.
Okay.
Hughes-Mungus game?
Oh, that's pretty good.
i think more of the line of like hey those guys are all brothers
hughes brothers band of brothers that's not bad it's not bad hughes brothers that but
there's not correct uh hughes brothers set to share ice again tonight when devils visit canucks
man i'm trying to like there's not a lot of word play there like puns like
cute brothers think brothers sibling yeah there's not a lot of puns at all not sibling rivalry
something no no can't be that simple and straight ahead but like this this headline it's it's about
the brothers and um it's a headline for like the article written on nhl.com and it's on the
internet family matters no no oh it's about it's about an article written about the hughes brothers
you know so it's not like blues brothers no no no i think it's more about like article hey
this is an article about the brothers what what could it possibly be sibling story no no okay
we're getting closer and like i would i would say it's a pretty good article okay tale of a trio
no i would say it's a pretty good article about brothers pretty good article yeah yeah yeah
i don't know i think it's just called brothers no no it's it's it's like oh my gosh that's that's a
that's a great story that's a nice story about brothers brothers story no other story of brothers
it's not like brothers grim or something is it no no no uh which is not a nice not always the
stories it's a really good story about brothers you know good story i don't know yeah yeah i'm
trying the hints are killing me man i don't know i'm really close i think it's called a story of
brothers nope i don't know how much closer i can get okay let's let's even let's dive even deeper
okay it's a it's a really good story about brothers that's on the internet so like why
not use some internet slang for your headline if you were if you were um is it yes brother no
oh no all right all right if you were if you were on like if you're 14 five years ago and you were
on twitter and somebody wrote a really long story and you were like yeah that's lame what would you
reply back to that cool story tldr oh cool story bro damn wow it took us a long time to get there
man wow the nhl went with cool a story bro i appreciate that for their headline i i said
like two of the three words you did all you needed to do was add cool article that was bad
article was throwing me that but then i started saying story just to give it away
that was bad guys that was one of your worst performances ever that's not wow i've done way
worse no not at this game yeah you're right that's got to be one of your worst performances
at this games ever like oh my gosh i'm just disappointed i could do worse i can do and i
will i'm very i'm very disappointed uh aria wanted to know why you didn't take the train
to london since it was such a long drive and you were complaining a lot about it
she said why didn't you take the train and then she screenshotted via i didn't complain via
uh she screenshotted via that said uh 42 toronto to london that's too much money
no i'm kidding um i love via there's uh we're looking into windsor i felt bad because there
were a few people there like i drove up here from friggin windsor um i don't think i'll be
making that drive i think i'll be taking the train oh the train oh you're going oh no no like
i still want to go okay what do you mean you're not going to windsor get it get out there and
like yeah ottawa's another one where i'm like okay i could drive do i want to via via it goes
it takes you right downtown choose the best yeah this one's from python 3504 do the leafs need to
sign nyes before they look at signing Marner on and Tavares um yeah we sort of talked about that
last show um uh you need nyes like what what is this a question of um are we or aren't we gonna
keep them no you sign nyes do a deal that makes sense and you figure out the rest you need this
player adam i think uh yes uh because i don't know how i've swung back and forth on mitch
marner because i thought after that playoff series maybe we were all a little emotional
like they cannot do this again and then they were like everything's on the table and it wasn't
uh but i look at matthew nyes and i go yes for toronto that should be the priority over
tavaris and marner and i don't think you can sign tavaris and marner until you see what they do in
the playoffs if they don't perform in the playoffs well then you risk losing marner for nothing oh
oh well are we past that yeah well i think i think that there are not nothing it's a it's
11 million dollars yeah in caps and potentially more because you haven't signed them you imagine
the leafs going to next offseason with 22 million dollars that's what i mean right and they by the
way i'll give them credit they spent it well this offseason haven't really seen an acquisition i
haven't liked uh and so i look at i look at um i look at that and i go matt knives is a part of
this future of this team part of the future of this team for the next eight years no question
uh if i'm matt knives representation i go we'll talk to you in the spring
why why would you sign that now unless you plop something really interesting i mean
there's genther's deal there's levkovsky's deal there's lafreniere's deal i'm trying to think i
like other comparables like i i just don't see how it's it can't be over much higher than seven
yeah i think i think that that should be between seven and seven and a half is probably where it's
going to land and i unless unless um and you're and you're buying potential that's what you're
buying well you're buying eight years right uh but if they if if darren dreger is to to be believed
And remember, it can always be an agent floating something.
Of course.
But, you know, from what he said, and I think he heard directly from the representation that it was that it's going to be a big number.
So we're looking at a bridge.
You already know where that's already.
And this is what the Leafs can't do.
They cannot.
They hold on.
The Leafs cannot let another RFA walk all over them.
And to this point, even with Joseph Wall's contract, which I wasn't crazy about, it's fine.
I think you can't – you've got a different general manager in there.
You cannot have what you had with Nylander, Matthews, and Marner
when they steamrolled you.
Why are you giving four-, five-, and six-year contracts to dudes in their 30s
and you're going to bridge Nyes?
That's stupid.
Well, that's why I think that was Nyes' people.
Okay.
That's a good question.
Yeah.
It's a good point.
I think it's going to be an eight-year deal.
I think it's going to be an eight-year deal.
That's my guess.
I have no inside source on that.
I think it's going to be an eight-year deal.
I think what Drager put out there, and no disrespect to him because I know that he heard that directly from them, or I can assume he can, I would think that that's the agent going, just in case you want to know, this is what it's going to be, and that's where our negotiation starts, and you'll have to move me off that point.
Yeah, I mean, you could always be the team who lost Zach Hyman twice.
Yeah, you got Zach Hyman.
Lock this player up.
They're going to lock him up.
Don't be fucking stupid.
Lock this player up.
He's going to be here.
Some frustration in my voice.
Yeah.
Sign this player.
You've been hurt before.
Jesse, are you ending the show?
Is that what you're doing with that slide?
No, no.
Oh, okay.
None.
Sorry.
I wasn't doing anything.
Oh, you were just...
Okay.
All right.
I was like, oh, is he trying to let us?
Okay, so let's talk about this.
Oh, sorry.
What?
Let's get the next question out there.
Oh, sure.
We can do one more.
This is from Mike Morris.
Then I want to do a quick thing after.
Have you guys watched the Netflix doc on the 2004 Red Sox?
Theo Epstein has a great quote, which I think is relevant to Adam's criticism of the Leafs leadership group.
He said, when you have silence or you have a bunch of introverted players, inevitably what happens is that vacuum gets filled with negative narratives.
i would say austin is the opposite of an introverted introverted player yeah i like him
i think he's a great leader i i've liked the way he's played even though he hasn't scored
he's the right captain for the team definitely i mean whatever you want to call it you know call
it the yips like the leafs have it i mean there's uh you know yeah there's stylistically some stuff
there but every year they're great in the regular season every year they wilt uh in the playoffs
and you can't tell me that's not a problem
that is mostly between the ears.
Yeah, I don't even think it's like the guys on the team have it
because they definitely do.
But the organization as a whole, no matter who's running it,
it feels like the crest has it and we've just reached that point.
That's why, like, I don't know.
You just need guys who don't give a shit about that.
I don't think Jake McCabe gives a shit about that.
I don't think Willie gives a shit about that.
willie doesn't give a shit about that like you just need players who are like yeah all right
well that wasn't me though was it you know like i love a hometown kid um sometimes i wonder if
the leafs need less i don't think they do it's hard it's hard in this sometimes when
the high percentage of players come from ontario i know but like it just it seems like it just
is this impossible thing to overcome when you i feel like the less context you understand about
this team the better that's why nice is actually like perfect you know and now matthew's two
arizona born kids yep it's it's great for them to play for the leafs and yeah the hometown thing
it adds a bit of pressure and you see it with guys who come to town because they start performing
better because their their family's here and then the guys who are here drop down because
there's so much pressure if i may yeah i would like to offer an alternative point of view all
right which is i don't think it matters where you come from you are you feel pressure in one way or
you don't and i think that everybody knows that this team has lost because of more than just
pressure yes and that's why i don't like that i think that lets them off the hook they blew a 3-1
lead to um an empty building yeah i think it can be both yeah yeah i guess i guess i just think
there are people that like i don't i don't think that there are like ryan o'reilly came here he
knows the history he's from here yep uh he performed great and then didn't like it didn't
didn't like it uh uh wanted to go live in national attack free state okay fine yeah i get it uh but i
would i would say that like do you not think guys that matt sandin was unaware of it doug
gilmore's from kingston do you think he wasn't aware of it it was already 30 years when they
got here like they're all aware wendell clark knew when he grew up on a farm in saskatchewan
like i think i think if you're in hockey and you don't know that the leafs haven't won since 1967
you're not in hockey right right no it's a great point just to not take away from their on ice
performance is wasn't good enough yeah how about just we're not excusing it how you know i agree
no no i'm not saying you guys are excusing it i don't think this show has ever done that but i
think we're looking at like uh when people are trying to propagate excuses from within that's
what drives me nuts and i think that back to that theo epstein quote i think that's absolutely right
for you to be a leader you can be what matt sundin was considered like a quiet leader
but he led by example on the ice he was a bastard to play against go look at matt sundin's highlights
he'd kill you it takes all sorts like um and they did have loud guys they had your tuckers your
domies you're roberts you're like they had guys that were leaders in their own way who were team
team team team team one of the most surreal interviews i ever did and i wasn't young enough
to properly appreciate it and now that i'm older i'm like god i i would love another crack at that
as a 36 year old um i interviewed evan cornway and serge savard at the same time i remember that
at the olympics and one thing cornway said was you know on the montreal canadian teams we had
that basically won everything he's like we had like 14 captains you know it takes a room right
so you can look at austin but it it takes a room um it's good to have guys who can step in and do
like a great speech and and everything like one of the guys who the oilers credit with um turning
their season around last year was matthias yanmark um they talk about hockey the janitor way because
they call him the janitor um and it's matias yanmark but he was basically like we're better
than this we need to commit to playing hockey this type of way and it turned their whole season
around yeah i mean they also fired their coach and started getting some saves but you know what
i mean those things can't be unrelated it can be anyone it doesn't have to be one of your big guys
he had 12 points last year matias yanmark yeah 12 that's psycho and he's absolutely insane so yeah
it's it's about what's up here so i like that hey that's great shall we uh shall we wrap the show
jesse uh real quick um so last little push for donations for easter seals link in the description
down below um if you donate any amount to anybody on rachel's raiders you're automatically entered
into a draw um for leafs tickets saturday november 16th against the edmonton oilers that's right
