now before we get started i just want to say we're so thrilled to be downtown on king west i've already had a couple people come up to me and go you guys always do shows outside of town you never do one downtown and you're right and that's why we're here and we're coming back here this is our new home downtown everybody so get used to it get used to the staff tip them well treat them well please they're gonna remember they will remember your face they will and all and tonight after the show we're gonna watch game one of 82 of the toronto Maple Leafs baby 82 games and you know what I love this because we get to start game one with Joseph Wall on the injured reserve yeah isn't that great you know what it's funny last week

we were talking about it we put out a video nobody believed us uh that he was hurt and here he is and now here's the thing though it's tightness I don't know what tightness means it's tightness lower body tightness as the resident uh expert on tightness tell me he's just a bit sore he's suboptimal and i like there were years where this would be abject like disaster like we've had situations where it's starters good backups bad third guys unplayable now they're depending on who you talk to three or four deep uh stolers look great in the preseason right who watched yeah stanley cup winning goaltender yeah stanley cup winning goaltender he was in there for i think all 16 wins yep and and i'm i'm planting my flag right now i believe in the hilda beast i believe

in dennis hildeby who since wool is now on ir apparently he's got to miss seven days he does he has to miss a full week which means hildeby might make his nhl debut tomorrow night yeah They have a back-to-back to start the season. And you know who it's against, right? The Devils. The New Jersey Devils, who are good. You guys watch the Czech series, right, where the Devils just beat up on the Sabres? Yeah.

Yeah, as satisfying as that was as an anti-Sabres person. I have to say, I'm a little freaked out by the Devils right now. But seeing Stallers and seeing Hildeby as much as we did in the preseason, I mean, it sure helps to be tall when you're a goaltender, doesn't it? Yeah. Their job is to take up as much of the net as possible, And he does that by existing. And both of them, Anthony Stallers and Dennis Hildeby, are 6'7", without skates on.

Damn. That's big. That's big. That's big. Jesse, how tall are you? Like 6'4", and a bit. 6'4". Yeah.

With hair. With hair. Yeah, when you add the hair, it's like 6'5". 6'5". Yeah, it's a lot. So, Jesse, stand up for the crowd, if you don't mind. I'm sorry. You're going to be our model.

Okay. So, imagine Jesse, so handsome. Imagine him, but two inches taller than that, and then on skates. There you go. That's massive. They take up the entirety of the net. Big person. Very big person.

So excited about that. Hugging Jesse is humiliating. Oh, yeah. He always has to reach down. I feel like his little girlfriend. I feel like it's like take your kid to work day. Show us. Somebody said show us.

the minnesota wild you guys remember that yes that was fun right you were i wasn't at that oh you weren't at that game okay i was there by myself i couldn't i wasn't there either i couldn't be with the peasants we don't all have season tickets like adam wild over here i'm missing the game tonight for all of you you're welcome um but no but he had a really good start like for three or four games and then was bad for a couple of months and then wasn't in the lineup and then had the article come out about how his knees are loose do you remember that oh i forgot he's like i'm healthy but my knees are loose and then all of a sudden he comes back and you start to see this guy you go oh okay well it's a good shift and he played well he played really well what did we say

what did we say oh we hate him on principle he's bad no we talked about how he was awesome he was awesome and then you know the later in the bruin series we were like okay perhaps not but i think we were generally pretty fair with him and if uh he wants to come to the basement he is welcome to as long as i don't get punched in the face i want to i want to run you through last year's starting lineup oh let's go okay last year's starting lineup on the first line bertuzzi matthews marner line two domi tavaris kneelander line three nize minton yarn crock nine line four gregor conf reeves i forgot minton made the team did on oh yeah yeah night one that's incredible because they didn't have a center why uh why

oh because kneelander won't play bloody center well because they won't put him at bloody center the second line is the same as it is this year that's right with domi tavaris kneelander which they didn't stick to which leaves me with the impression that it's not good i don't know why they're doing it on defense last year riley brody i don't know if anybody if anybody saw the chicago game uh tj brody man woo uh uh yeah uh line two of the defense pair get this mccabe clingberg yeah i thought back when clingberg used to play hockey that's right hey he doesn't anymore and line three it's believe it or not you're gonna woo harder giordano lilligran yeah okay yeah So, four guys you named aren't on the team anymore?

Yeah. Well, Lilligren's on the team, just in the press box. I think it's four guys on defense. On defense, yes. Yes, and you know what? That's exciting. Dude, when you read it out loud, it's really hard to argue that they're not better. Like, they're better.

And I don't know. I don't know if you guys have been acquainted with Stephen Lorenz yet. He was really good with Florida when he was playing. But nobody has ever wanted to be a Toronto Maple Leaf more than Stephen Lorenz. this man just won the passion that passion he's got the passion that's right he all he can talk about is how excited his dad is oh yeah very often the first goal of the season's dumb freddie the goat got it a few years ago stevie's burying one you think so yeah all right yeah all right all right yeah uh on defense you ready morgan riley chris tanov is that the best

one-two pair we've had in 25 years, because I think it is. Yes. Easily. In 25 years, guys. Easily. Number two, defense pair two, OEL, Jake McCabe. Hooray! McCabe's fighting an injury, but he's playing.

And number three, and this is the surprise. Not Simone Benoit, we're pumped about that, but we knew he was going to be on the team. The surprise is that Connor Timmons is the guy that's coming in. And I'll be honest with you guys, if you heard our St. Catherine show,

I completely wrote that guy off. I was like, wow, that's it. Bye, Connor. See you later. That's the way things were lining up. It's the way things were lining up, but he played himself into a position and Lilligren played himself

out of a position to be on that team. I saw there was a couple here and they both had Lilligren jerseys. No way. I would like to offer... Hands up, hands up. Who's got it?

Last year. uh it must have been no matt murray i think was two years ago um come on samson i'm sorry samson yes that was tough what was that murray matt murray the year before the year before that jackery campbell and the year before that was it freddy frederick anderson frederick anderson is that a different goalie every year it's a different goalie every year for the last five years they should stop that they should probably stop that i agree with you now uh looking at the habs lineup tonight guys uh caulfield suzuki slevkoski new hook doc armia we do have some habs fans here let's give them a shout out hooray i do want to say i talked to them before the show

they've been listening to us for over 10 years so i just want to say how much i appreciate that Put it up with a bunch of Leaf fans. Barb Boulay, Dvorak, Anderson, Heinemann, Evans, Gallagher, and on defense, Matheson, Gouley, Lane, Bo Jackson, Hudson, David Savard, Arbor Jack guy, Justin Barrett, and Montembeau with the starter. And they interviewed Nick Suzuki. I don't know if you guys saw this. They did the whole thing on all the young stars. And they asked him, who's your biggest rival this year? And he looked at the camera

And he smirked and he said Toronto And I thought that was funny because we're not thinking about them at all Isn't that nice We will be If they get their way tonight man It was a fiery affair last time I think there's some bad blood

One of the funniest things Does the preseason carry over to the regular season Oh yeah Jack Eye's getting At least a fight And maybe a couple penalties And it's Jack Eye Reeves right because they're the heavyweights.

Yeah, Jack Eyrieves is going to go in the first period at some point. I almost think they should be in the starting lineup. That'd be fun. Dude, get it over with. That'd be a lot of fun. Opening draw? Yeah. I mean, fighting, you know, I don't know.

I don't know. I don't know. But it'd be sick. We don't condone it, but it would be awesome. It'd be pretty cool. I thought it was interesting. If they were going to get revenge, I would have thought they would have put Michael Pezzetta in as well.

He's not in tonight. The Pez dispenser's not in. Yeah, from what I'm reading, Pezzetta is not in tonight. That's weird. I don't know if he's hurt or what. Interesting. Interesting. I am surprised by this.

So here's what I want to know. Give me a woo on how you're feeling about this team. When we did this in St. Catharines, okay, you could have – I mean, it was like letting the air out of a balloon. It was not great. After seeing the preseason, which everybody always overrates, how are we feeling about the Leafs this regular season? Feeling good.

All right. That's better. That's actually surprising. That's much better. For a team that's not won anything, that's very surprising. Hey, let's get a woo if you're full of existential dread. That one was louder. Yeah, easily.

Well, I was going to say, how do we feel about the playoffs? But that might have been just it, right? Same question. It is, it is. And so how many people here think that this year's team is better than last year's team? okay how many people here think that brad true living is doing a good job okay oh lukewarm on that one all right all right how many people aren't sure there we go there we go so so here's the thing the team is objectively better

and yet the crowd tells us i'm not sure if brad's doing a good job what is that what and is it down to brad really listen i i think leaf fans despite what everyone says are very they're self-aware like oh playing the parade and boo it's an old meme because i haven't met a leaf fan for the last five years who has been like they're winning the cup this year man i believe in it wholeheartedly okay that guy this is the year it's it's a low percentage that gentleman and no one one of 1000 probably yeah yeah like steve you did have the playoff run where you said it was the vision what year was that jesse we call that a bit what year was that were you 2022 2022 that was the year you thought they were going to get it

done you're not gonna believe what happened that year so so what happened they went to game seven against tampa oh yeah yeah after being up three two in the series and they um lost ah yes so the vision wasn't quite complete no well i can't read adam's screen from here so the vision is blurry so what is what is it though why is it that okay we agree the team's better we agree that we're excited we agree we're gonna watch basically every game why are we still not sure about this guy brad and why are we still not quite sure about this team that has regularly eclipsed 100 points like this is the best regular season team you could argue the toronto maple leafs have had since the 1967 expansion okay okay yeah that's an interesting one this is uh this is a great

comparison while we're in a restaurant remember that episode of south park where randy has enormous balls and he's trying to walk through the door of a weed store but he can't because his balls are too big and he says look i'm starting to feel pretty stupid can i just get high i think leaf fans are like okay i'm starting to feel pretty stupid can i just have some passion right you know what i mean like i they're gonna watch every game they're gonna cheer about it but i feel like it's something that you gotta doing like your own little dungeon now um i i think Leaf fans are I don't want to say ashamed but like dude this team keeps letting them down and progress isn't linear but it was like flat line slight blip flat line right they had the

one round win Florida patted them on their little bottoms and sent them on their way and they haven't won a series since so Adam you remember what they said at the end of last season that everything was on the table. And we get to this season where things are better, but it wasn't the big change that we all expected. The table looks pretty much the same. There's more things on this table. Yeah, so when the core is

maintained throughout the entire entirety of this not successful run, and they continue to not make big changes, you don't really have confidence in the team. Asterisk. Yeah. Nylander's center now. Oh, wait. Oh, no.

They abandoned that. So let me ask you this, guys, and you can just shout out your answers. What to you would be something that would be like, man, because how many people here first off have ever gotten into an argument with somebody else about the Toronto Maple Leafs? Yeah, this is, so my wife is a bit of a fatalist. She's a hardcore Leaf fan

and grew up watching with her dad and every game for her and her family is a must win. I remember game one last year, my mother-in-law sat on the couch at our house and said, they got to win this game. This is a must win. And she wasn't kidding. They don't play games to lose them.

No, exactly. I agree with them. And she is always like, if they get down early, she's down on them, right? She kind of really rides the roller coaster. So for you here, who have argued for this team so many times, right? What's the point where you go, okay, that was a successful year? Conference final. Okay, that's one.

Are we looking for conference final? I feel like an auctioneer. Are we looking for conference final? Conference final. Conference final. We're going to go to second round. Second round. Can I get a second round?

Okay. Copper bust? The true believers over there. The era high is five wins. So, hey, five wins. Can we get six? Can we get six? Like, okay, honestly, how many wins in the playoffs do they have to get before we go?

Man, that was a great year. Good job, boys. We'll get them next year. 16 or 17. All right. 16 or 17. I think if the Leafs had a season like the Rangers had last season where they came up against florida and in the end they were just didn't have quite enough to beat the eventual

stanley cup champions i think people would look back on the leaf season be like yeah that team is very close they're very successful and then you try and build on that for the next year that would be a very successful season but the leafs have never come close to that kind of year new york or dallas very similar yeah dallas as well like very successful season just kind of short against the team that ended up losing barely to the stanley cup final what's the thing though since where you know i don't want to be due town this is game one guys we're gonna be excited what's the thing that you enjoy watching most about this team like when we're like listen i love austin austin matthew scoring goals i love ryan reeves punching people in the face i love simone benoit

just crushing people out of nowhere and it's always a little off camera i don't know how he does that but you're like the camera's moved on it's like oh simone benoit and then they go back and show you the replay like wow how did they miss that what is the thing what what brings you joy because you're all here. You're all here in downtown Toronto. You're all wearing Leaf jerseys except for them. You're here. What do you love?

And the Flyers guy. And the Flyers guy. Flyers guy. Go Tortorella. Great goaltending. We like the goaltending. That was going to be my answer. There's, absolutely.

There's, listen. Austin can score. Yeah. Mitch, contract year? I got him in fantasy he's getting 150 and that's what he's going to ask for too

150 and like guys on this team can score in October 100% I need tell me the joy

the joy keep it on the joy I need the security I need the ooh there's some what is there's no better feeling

than having a goalie you trust no better feeling no better feeling okay elite goal scorer and you know defender big hits big fight nothing nothing tops a goal you trust yeah i think if for anybody who's a little older you think back to like the kujo kujo and belfor years like having one of those two in the net every night like it was an awesome era of leafs hockey the i i it was 2001 i think 2000 or 2001 leafs playing the senators and the senators

kicked the Leafs ass all year that year and it's like okay but you got to beat him oh yeah you got to beat him four times out of seven what happened one two three four sweep yeah it was Cujo versus Patrick Lalim you don't have a shot you don't have a shot now we're asking a 30 year old to sort of be like hey I know your career high in games played is like 29 how do you feel about 50 So that's a little different But based on the preseason I trust Anthony Stallers It'd be real sick

If he were to come in tonight And have a very good game Maybe even a signature save or two Just so we all go Win or lose tonight I'm seeing a lot of yeses Like a lot of people just silent yeses in the crowd Alright I like that

Jesse Blake what do you got So it's the goaltending Good answer good answer no you look around the league you look at any team that has an elite goaltender and you say they're in the game every single night like you run down the list it's ottinger shisterkin hellebuck whoever you want like they're in the game and they're gonna be a contender this season goaltending is definitely like a warm hug it's a nice glass of milk at the end of your day before you go to bed what sounds like a stomach ache to me but you know what cup contender are we like

yeah but their goalie sucks like it's we we thought that about edmonton we and then stewart Skinner emerged as the best Canadian goaltender in the world. And they looked unbeatable. CJ in the group chat, I don't know how public he was about it, but Edmonton won game four. They're still down 3-1. And he's like, boys, we're going seven.

I'm like, shut up. Game five begins, and I went, whoops. Oh, Florida's in so much trouble. And it was like that all the way up to the end. How many people here tonight have picked up Steve Dangle's new book, Hockey Rants and Raves? Yay!

Yeah. Now, Steve has gone to the trouble. It took him hours and hours to do this because he is very slow at writing. To sign all those books, and I'm not kidding, when you go up and get it customized later tonight, and you will, you're going to be shocked at how slow this man is at penmanship. It's shocking. We should almost have, like, AI do it in your printing or something like that. No.

But we're so excited for you guys to check out this book. and the thing about it is jesse and i have a copy but i don't read anything i do audiobook so i'm waiting for that to come out and i want to know why should why should people even though they are why should people be reading this what are we in for it's a book designed for tonight that's exactly what it's designed for uh you're in a room full of hockey fans and you're going to be talking about a b and c you're going to be talking about everything that you've ever talked about Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr, Gordie Howe, Austin Matthews, William Nylander, Mitch Marner.

You're going to be talking about the old greats, the new greats, how they relate to each other, how they compare to each other. And it's done in a loving way. I did method acting or method writing. I wrote a lot of it in bars. Shout out Maguires and Ajax. But, you know, it's not quite Greta.

No, nothing could be Greta. They don't have bubble hot. That's right. thank you for the round of applause that's right it deserves a round of applause they don't have bubble that's right um but it's it's not the young talking down to the old it's not the old talking down to the young it's meant to be hockey arguments that bring everyone together and there's a few where i just go completely off and rip some stuff to shreds and other things are love letters to hockey i think there's something in this book for absolutely every hockey fan in

the world jesse why will you be reading steve's book because he's steve dangle yeah good answer good answer is that something by the way when you write a book can you just give that to a family member and be like here's your christmas present yeah is that like is that a stalking stuff where you can do mom dad do i have to get you stuff no oh yeah he's the gift that keeps on giving By the way, Tina and Gary Glynn, everybody. That's right. There's a lack of zoo stories, correct? How many zoo stories?

No zoo stories? There's a zoo mention. Oh, there is. A mention. Okay. I don't even remember when it is or what context. Yeah, what is the relevance of the zoo getting in the book this time? It's the zoo, and it was a very cool job.

It just feels like, I don't know, it just doesn't fit. you know like so i read read the audiobook i think it was end of july beginning of august and one of the things that was a real challenge with the book is making sure nothing was out of date even though i had to submit it i think it was sometime in march so like the season's not even done the playoffs are about to start you're about to have a child yeah oh yeah had a child i think you submitted it before or after she was born so here's how it went um i kept going can i have an extension can i have an extension can i have an extension and they said we're being polite we're being polite we're being polite you have 48 hours to submit this or we can't get the book

out on time wow and so i contacted tina and gary and i said i can't be a dad for 48 hours can you help and they did and that's how the book got done and that's why we're all here because of tina and gary out of you you distracted steve from the first story he was telling well sorry you were in the middle of telling the marcia snow story oh yeah oh yeah so it was it was really difficult to make sure everything stayed uh like uh current and relevant current and factual and not out of date so like there was one part in there where i'm like gosh darn it i i hope the panthers get luongo his cup or something and i i can't remember if that beat the deadline but there's one chapter in there that's i talk about it's a few paragraphs on all 32 nhl teams and the

Arizona one is fun because I just had to cross everything out and put, like, Utah. You're going to enjoy Utah. But the Vegas one, I go, okay, what's something that has remained a constant in Vegas for the entirety of their franchise? I go, if you need to get the jersey for one guy, just one guy, it should be Jonathan Marcheseau. And then he immediately signed in Nashville. And I think that's still in the book. That's great. If you have a first edition of the book, that's going to remain in there,

who I won't name here who was high up in executives he was a high up executive at the Leafs for a while. He went over to Europe for a while. He's back in North America. This guy's just one of these people that is a savant. You say he's like on your level of billionaire status.

He's on my level of richness. He's not one of the unwatched. He's your people. He's the kind of guy a billionaire would hire. But when I started hanging out with him, I actually met him playing video games. We were playing Star Wars Battlefront. And I met him on that and that's how we became friends.

I did that thing where you score and you just sprint away, and everybody chases you down the ice, and I just ran down the basement, and these two guys followed me and jumped on me. We got a text from Steve's wife like, what the hell are you guys doing down there? It was unbelievable.

Three-man tackle squad. Very, very different. Well into adulthood. Absolutely. It was game seven, though. Oh, yeah. The video game almost had us. It had us on the ropes, man.
