Starting point is 00:00:00 Sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where TaskRabbit comes in and I think you should check this out because here's the deal. One of the things, one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows. And their way around on that is like, well, it's a patio window, you can do that yourself. And I'm like, well, hang on a second. What if I don't want to? I don't have the stuff because you got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing.
Starting point is 00:00:28 The chemicals, you got to have the right chemicals. see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list 15 off your first task at taskrabbit.ca or on the task rabbit app using the promo code Dangle. Well, hello there. Course and Clubhouse just a couple days away, and so that means that our recording schedule is going to be a little bit different this week. You're going to get an extra show. Wow.
Starting point is 00:02:01 And obviously, if you're an SDP VIP, you're still getting your Friday morning VIP drop. And for anybody that doesn't know, we have SDP VIP. You can sign up to be a subscriber. Apple, Spotify, YouTube, Jesse. One thing that people I don't think notice, but if you subscribe to SDP VIP, that version of the show comes out before the ad version of the show. it's like an hour early yeah yeah because they're they're not edited at the exact same time so
Starting point is 00:02:28 the ad free one is done beforehand and it drops earlier so if you want access to the sdp earlier in the day you get that when you subscribe to sdp vip ad free tier yes just on the regular tier if you're just a youtube member you won't get it but if you're on the ad free tier which is the spotify version the apple version and the ad free version on youtube you get it earlier which is fun which is great yeah uh now of course in clubhouse this friday they've got the five hd golf simulators we got triple bogey in the house we've got shorezy legends of the north which used to be odr hockey heroes but our good friend chris who uh crowdfunded this video game partially on this network right secure that bag chris was able to now he's working with shorezy
Starting point is 00:03:11 and i think that's kind of that bag christopher when you see him in person make sure you say congratulations this guy he's been hustling and building this thing for five years and to get those guys on board man that's pretty sweet uh so we're very excited about that tickets are 25 bucks plus tax doors at five uh it is course and clubhouse in saint catherine's and don't do what i did last year and leave later than you should uh because if you have to leave toronto and go to saint catherine's i don't know if you've heard of the thing called traffic i don't know people live west of the city east of the city is so much easier adam not all people welcome to the resistance i know the west of young propaganda is working on you talking about the west west end
Starting point is 00:03:53 traffic is way worse than eastern traffic there's more people million thousand percent it depends on where you're going that isn't true no that i don't think that's true at all no but like what if you just like live in burlington and work in burlington okay but like what are you what are you talking about to toronto and back it's take the go train it's two hours from burlington to burlington no it's not it's no it's actually four hours yeah if there's a crash on the skyway good luck you're not getting home tonight what all the skyway that's why you buy in that's why you buy a cyber truck with the tent in the back so you can sleep on the skyway okay that's what you do that's why that's exactly that's the reason anyway you you press down on the pad you set up camp you you
Starting point is 00:04:33 craft and cook all the animals that you caught earlier that day that's right this is red dead redemption and then you just you just sleep till morning you don't do a little sings a little sing-songy thing you can you can sing at the campfire yeah yeah okay good yeah i all i gotta say is traveling either way on the 401 is death oh and nobody should do it and it's terrible and it's not better on the east or worse or anything it is both directions on the 401 it's awful don't you care directions on the dvp pick a time it's awful both directions on the qw pick a time it's awful qew is awful is a crime gardener awful is a crime no it's awful you know it's so good nothing is better or worse it's all bad okay it's so good that dug for it working from home is over
Starting point is 00:05:21 working from home is over season yeah also get to your office yeah holy shit could i tell the moment we started doing shows again which was like two weeks after what was it work from home is just done or whatever or mandated over. I was like, thanks, Doug. If I could get political for a sec, you fucked up my ride, Doug. You ruined the neighborhood, Doug. Anyway,
Starting point is 00:05:46 all to save one stretch of businesses on the path. He's like, well, the path is struggling. We must mandate people back to work. I'm like, yo, that sucks. We are small business owners. We understand that suck. Doug, I'm mad at you, folks, my friends. Oh, you know what? He seems like a guy
Starting point is 00:06:02 I could have a beer with. Fuck politicians you can have beers with. They stink. Did you like when he ate the ice cream? Oh, man. That was if fucking I could do that. Vote for me. You know what?
Starting point is 00:06:14 I'll get up in front of a camera and eat ice cream. He can win. You think he can win mayor of Ajax? I've said this for years. Steve could run for mayor of a small town and win. A small, tiny town like Ajax. Doesn't it help to be from that place? Yes.
Starting point is 00:06:30 I'm not from there. I live there. You're a resident. you could start a movement make ajax great again don't do it actually it fits perfectly you could have a hat there's already a kind of crazy person in picker yes i know that that's not ajax though no it's no heavens no all right now yeah and i'm just really bigoted towards people from pickering and i make that my thing that's i think that's a great new political they're not sending their best yeah pickering the losers stupid all right i'm gonna get my food spat in next time i go to port
Starting point is 00:07:06 jesse can you do me a favor okay i sent you a video before just before the show started we can pull that up uh this is how travis green can differentiate between dylan cousins and nick cousins how do you differentiate between dylan cousins and nick cousins one one makes a lot of money one doesn't that's a good line he was so proud of himself yeah what was that he first of all a little bit of a john taveras it's a lot of money one doesn't when your kids make like a they know they're doing something they shouldn't yeah you know funny and it's like oh i did something cheeky but also was that Julian I don't know I sounded like Julian who asked the question I don't
Starting point is 00:07:52 think so I think that was Julian I don't think so play it oh my goodness what it's Julian how do you differentiate between Dylan Cousins and Nick Cousins that is Julian I don't think that's Julian what hold on I'm gonna ask it just ask him right now differentiate between Dylan Cousins and Nick Cousins that's a hundred percent Julian Steve's right Dylan Cousins question I just text him. You don't need to text him. I'm voiceless. Alright, this is a terrible start to the show.
Starting point is 00:08:20 Did you ask that stupid question about the Cousins guys in Ottawa? I don't think you did. There you go. I think you did. No. Did you text Julian? Are you texting him? Jesus. And then I just wrote Julian in the group. God, we need games back. We need games back so bad. Yeah, we do.
Starting point is 00:08:38 Well, we got one last night. There we go. Now we're caught in. Hey, Jesse, can you do me a favor? yeah can you bring up the picture of the press box last night at the leafs game no you can't no no oh you're not allowed to show that oh no well here's the fun part nobody was there uh it was like jesse and kevin mcgrann i think that's not true no who was there alter was there uh anna duo was there uh terry koshan was there uh who else was there those people the coach dog people people wait sorry who was there the scary toronto me oh man they might they might ask a question it was personality to your point yes the it's light
Starting point is 00:09:21 in preseason it is practice time it's three hours of practice for the leafs right so there's not a lot to be there and ask the hard-hitting questions about the the scrums are like 25 the length that they are during the oh i'm sure it's probably nice to be able to get an an arm in there with a recording device and not like not have to like fight somebody yeah yeah feels like that's probably not a problem for you though no i'm pretty tall i can get in there yeah has anyone ever turned around and just been in your pit like in my armpit yeah just just a schnoz like i've done that on the subway where it's like somebody's super tall and i turn around to get out the door and it's like whoa you're not a small man though i know but there are five i'm 5 11 there
Starting point is 00:10:02 are some tall ass people out there as you know being one and you're not you shouldn't be rubbing up in anybody's pit Adam I did once it was it was it was midsummer Davisville station I'll never forget it the the thing about the preseason game is the Leafs need to stop lying the attendance number they announced was 15,000 people and there must have been like eight oh yeah really no it was no the building was empty well they normally they normally sell those out yeah I think that speaks to how much it costs to go to a fucking Well, the number
Starting point is 00:10:35 that 15,000 they announce is tickets sold, I assume. Yes. It's just the amount that people showed up to wasn't near that 15K and they went with the number sold,
Starting point is 00:10:45 which I always think is so disingenuous. They burned like 7,000 tickets. Probably. Well, and I think too, they make that money. How much of that? No, I know,
Starting point is 00:10:53 but like it's 7,000 tickets that people just went meh. Exactly. No, but how much of that is season ticket holders, which is part of the package, right? I think most of the arena is season ticket holders. I'm pretty sure.
Starting point is 00:11:04 It's almost entirely. Yeah. So even if it's 15,000 season ticket holders, you can announce that every time as a minimum. Yes. Right? Yeah. We got to sell 3,000 tickets tonight to this Leafs game.
Starting point is 00:11:14 I do think, though, and I honestly believe this, I think people have caught wise to. I remember eight years ago, I went to see the Leafs play at Ricoh when it was called that. That's how long ago it was. And I sat along the boards, and it was $100. and i was like and then i i was like you know what i'm doing i'm gonna do this for the show and i'm gonna see i'm gonna see it and whatever and we didn't have any press credentials or anything
Starting point is 00:11:37 like that and i and then after i left it was like that was the that was really stupid why did i spend a hundred dollars dumb purchase yeah like what did i do well we got to see we got to see coliseum for a hundred dollars you know what was weird about that game adam is it was patrick marlo's first time in a leaf uniform oh that rico cut we saw patrick marlo in a leaf uniform i don't think i was there rico coliseum i'm almost positive you were no i was there with uh my buddy felipe oh well then fuck you yeah and he was like he's like why did why did we get these he's just made up of things yeah i thought it was i mean we probably were there for that too i probably maybe we were there separate and you were sitting with your my my better friends the
Starting point is 00:12:17 point is it's really expensive to go see one and uh we actually will get to it later but we have some some fat guy corner stuff that people are like yeah you guys were onto something last episode This had us heated. Let's talk about what we saw in the preseason game last night. I think the first thing you got to look at, because it's the most important thing, is Michelli on Matthews and Nyes' wing. Interesting that Matthews and Nyes are going to be,
Starting point is 00:12:39 looks like the number one PK unit. Yeah. But Michelli and Matthews seem to, there seemed to be something brewing there. Didn't seem to be completely out of place. Again, it's preseason. I'm not trying to draw too much, but that's the only hockey game we have to talk about yeah or the the only style of games we have
Starting point is 00:12:59 to talk about today so i gotta go on what we have and i don't know i like what i saw matthew's got his looks and michelle was able to find him like the two assists people are gonna get caught up on they're both sort of secondary phantom assists no they weren't assists yeah they literally shouldn't have been counted right the puck went to the two guys who teamed up to score the goals yeah back and forth after michelle touched the puck it's the ref's discretion like you can do that it's the scorer's discretion it well yeah sorry my bad it's i don't know someone one of them you know one of them one of the scary thems yeah um but he was responsible for the play getting there you know what i mean i liked i liked his game yeah yeah the points were a little forced yes
Starting point is 00:13:49 it's not about the points it's pre-season i liked how he played i liked how he listen the leafs lost the fifth leading scorer in the nhl from last season i'm also sick of talking about it but that is a fairly relevant thing and i don't think we asked enough questions about hey do we need someone making 11 million dollars to set up one of the best goal scorers in the world now we talked about that yeah i talked about that last year in november when matthews was in germany and marner was like tearing it up he was amazing and it's like hey man why don't we just split these three up like why it's very odd that
Starting point is 00:14:44 over all their time together matthews marner and willie over all their time in toronto they played on three separate lines 10 games total you would know better than i maybe you would remember that And it was like the final days of Keefe. It almost never happened. Yeah. They tried it for five seconds, and I don't know. Well, it's gone now. But all that to say, yeah,
Starting point is 00:15:15 Michelli doesn't make $11 million. He's not as good as Mitch Marner. He's not even close. But turns out he can do the thing that he is fundamentally on that line to do, which is give Austin Matthews the puck. Yeah. Yeah. And nice.
Starting point is 00:15:30 he got it to nice a few times too i like them because there is uh a lot less media there i get to poke in and ask a couple questions that like i want to know about did you actually ask some questions the thing like i'm fascinated about is this michelli playing on the right wing side of things because he's not a right winger he has never been he's he was a left winger he if you go to anything he's listed as a left winger um and now he's playing on the right so i was like so he had answered a question earlier in camp uh during training camp first couple days about like hey what's it gonna be like playing on the right side he's always said he's comfortable playing on the right side and everything and so i i followed up again uh after the game i was like how are you
Starting point is 00:16:09 on the right side are you playing left and he's like yeah i don't mind playing any wing i was just behind veterans in in utah i guess utah arizona and i'm fine on the right side so it's it was so it's so fascinating to me that this is a guy who spent his entire career on the left side but he's like i'm cool playing the right wing but it was just managerial decisions because we believe we have better right wingers and he never got that opportunity but he's a competent right winger and i think last night he was good he's gonna have to be real solid on his backhand and some of the passes that he pulled off on his backhand were freaking disgusting so like there's no worry there i i'm always fascinated because because it takes a little
Starting point is 00:16:52 bit of digging um in players who ended up a certain way because of situation and uh the the first guy i really dug into a few years ago was remember anton hudobin came out of friggin nowhere and i mean not really out of nowhere but he we didn't know he was that good of a starter and he helped dallas get all the way to the stanley cup final uh during the bubble and i sort of looked at it i'm like well at the beginning of his career he's behind this guy and this guy later in his career is behind this guy and this guy and then this guy and this guy and he goes here and i'm gonna be a starter and they get a guy named tuka rask and it was finally in dallas because of the perfect perfect set of circumstances that he got to do his thing
Starting point is 00:17:37 there's lots of guys who yeah i'd rather be a center i'd rather be on the left i'd rather do this i'd rather do that but you have to adapt like so much of getting into the nhl and staying into the nhl is taking advantage of an imperfect opportunity and this is what we've been asking nick robertson to do for two or three years now we know what you can do he's good at what he can do we know but the reason he finds himself in and out of the lineup are the things that he can't yeah a lot of things with i think in pro sports across the board is circumstance like how lucky are you to land on a certain team that needs that role that fits your game plan and like so many guys just who knows what guys could have been if they're on a different team yep right and i got
Starting point is 00:18:23 some info from craig morgan who followed up on the michelle thing because he covered utah slash arizona for so many years he had some context on why michelle was never a right winger he said the coaching staff in arizona slash utah said he never looked comfortable on the right side consequence consequently he had never played very uh he played very little on the right side in the nhl so it was a coaching decision they just never thought that he could fit there and he thought in his mind that he was just blocked by the guys who were on the right side and i'm happy that he's getting this opportunity in toronto because this could open his career up now that he could just be a first line right winger and who knows if he sticks around in another market or in utah again
Starting point is 00:19:03 and they just keep playing them on the left side lower down the well they didn't want to play him at all last year yeah well that too yeah they don't want to just play him and now he's a first liner in toronto i think that's a fascinating story oh 100 well and domi being at practice and he's still on that third line yeah i don't know it's interesting it's it's gonna be something uh going forward but i mean i mean we got four games of pre-season to go like i think i think there'll be plenty of opportunity to see both um and i i mean domi first off missed the beginning part of training camp because of a tweak and then his grandfather died so he was right i didn't know that yeah um until i read it this morning yeah yeah so he you know he missed it uh he went to
Starting point is 00:19:40 the funeral so i think uh um i'm curious to see i'm sure it'll be game four or five before we see matthew's domey together but i look at i want to look at that again and see where domey's at and what they've told him because clearly uh berube starting camp by saying it's his to lose um sometimes circumstance i injury and whatever can step in right i wonder if we ever see it like oh we're seeing michelle gonna impress enough that he's gonna take that spot due to circumstance well and also i don't like the preseason the purpose of it is to get guys warmed up and get a glance at something you've never seen before we know matthews and domi works like it's fine they work together all summer we've seen them play games together regular season and
Starting point is 00:20:27 playoff i i don't think it would be rocket science for the two of them to figure it out and instead of tyler bertuzzi you have matthew nyes oh okay you know i think i figure it out um i don't know if they necessarily need to see domi there in order to to play him well one of the things that kind of stuck out uh yesterday for me um is and i've heard this said a few different places cj's talked about he was on the leaf report with um uh slender man james myrtle uh and dragger talked about it last night and and uh you know the thinking is well they got to get a top six forward and i get it i look at this this is the scenario that they're in and i'm like yes they do and what do they have to give nothing uh so it's really nothing so so how about
Starting point is 00:21:16 you just go with what you have this year we don't like bobby mcmahon like i i like bobby mcmahon and i i but i think they were like you know will the i think the question on tsn last night was like who will finish in matthew's top line or whatever one said michelli and then the other two said it'll be a trade and you know i i i i feel like you know there's going to be a lot of teams who are looking at this coming season and going who has a bad first two months that's going to sell right right but even if they are having a bad couple of months and they're going to sell at the deadline okay that's not till february right and you know what we know about prices at the deadline expensive scott lawton fetches a first round pick that's what we know anger
Starting point is 00:21:58 grabenkin god every please stop posting grabenkin on the mic i know it makes me sad he's great on the mic please stop um uh and it's not because we don't like scott lawton it's just because uh grabenkin's just hilarious i would die for scott lawton but i would also die for nikita grabenkin right so i it's a miracle i'm alive i'm kind of looking at this and going like this is an opportunity for uh for them to just see what they have and work with what they have as i've maintained guys i think the the key to if connor mcdavid makes it to july 1st next year without a contract just show him whatever team you are that you are a connor mcdavid away from the stanley cup what if you don't need a top six forward as desperately as you have in the past
Starting point is 00:22:38 because your bottom six doesn't suck well so there's the other one and remember nick waugh has not played although he's on the ice this morning yeah um that's sort of the other people are like how are they going to replace 75 assists and it's like well they probably won't but you know their goal scoring went down 30 people like oh they scored 30 less goals the previous year to last year yeah uh it's because matthews had 30 goals instead of seven yeah everybody else was in line with their career and and beyond the top six as we kept talking about there was no scoring at all if you could get a couple of guys dakota joshua can you get him can you get him to 12 to 15 can you get nick wada his career numbers which are regularly 12 to 15 there's a lot of guys who
Starting point is 00:23:21 can give you a reasonable dozen and i think he'll be fine that's what you need was one of them joshua is one of them lotten lotten can do that who just depends on what role he's gonna didn't score with the leafs he didn't and a lot of people i'm like okay you've just never watched call on that's okay but like this isn't who he this is not stop talking about scott lotten like he's connor doer he's not yeah he's very not there's an abundance of evidence that he's not you know who can score 15 in the regular season connor doer cali arm crook yeah yes there's another guy i was like i guess you forgot and robertson regularly does with no minutes and shitty line mates i'm just shitty line mates just shitty positions they put them in the
Starting point is 00:24:01 the worst spots and and frankly as you said it's not that what he can do it's what he can't take it that causes the issue but this is it's a regular season it's a long time uh how many games uh uh 82 yeah that's a lot of games there's so many games we have a shirt in our uh their shop that's like 82 games that's so many games or whatever it's now it's gonna be 84 next year yeah get rid of the shirt we gotta listen we gotta roll out new merch i'm also pretty that's gonna cost 1.5 million dollars to change is it yeah okay are you talking about the rocket logo that they that they spent a million and a half dollars on to rotate what no that's that actually happened they were like i remember jesse and i were at rod all the sports net no no it was rogers
Starting point is 00:24:44 and it was their logo is like a red circle right with the weird lines or whatever so they they were like, we got this big logo unveiling coming out, blah, blah, blah, blah. And then they released it and everybody's like, it's the exact same. They're like, no, it's not the same. It's rotated. Well, like, cool, man. Your circle still looks like a circle. Halfway through the Rogers versus Rogers book. I think the national pastime of that company is setting money ablaze. Sometimes life throws your curve balls and you don't have time to get to them. And that's where TaskRabbit comes in. And I think you should check this out because here's the deal. One of the things, one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use
Starting point is 00:25:17 my floor to rappel down and clean all the windows, but they never clean my windows. Uh-oh. And their way around on that is like, well, it's a patio window. You can do that yourself. And I'm like, well, hang on a second. What if I don't want to? I don't have the stuff because you got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing. The chemicals.
Starting point is 00:25:34 You got to have the right chemicals. See, that's what I'm saying. That's why I used TaskRabbit and I employed a tasker. Here's the thing. TaskRabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly, home repairs, lawn maintenance, mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your
Starting point is 00:25:57 to-do list 15 off your first task at taskrabbit.ca or on the task rabbit app using the promo code dangle taskers across canada book up fast especially for same day tasks get 15 off your first task right now with the promo code dangle at taskrabbit.ca or the taskrabbit app you should download that taskrabbit.ca code dangle uh easton cowan missed basically three golden opportunities to score last night jesse um one thing that hit me that you wouldn't have caught because it was in the intermission is darren drager seemed to infer that he's getting a longer look and it was interesting the positions they put hames danford and cowan in yesterday uh i thought cowan was noticeable danford made a smart play to just make an easy play at the at the beginning of
Starting point is 00:26:46 the game and it led directly to the matthews goal he's gonna have a long awesome career yeah i don't know if it starts this year but it's gonna be great hames i didn't notice too too much but i don't know i don't really blame him for that i think he needs probably more time in the a it was okay what did we think about easton cowan what's your sense of how this team views him because we already have five lines and easton cowan isn't a part of the five lines and that will not make it past training camp yeah i don't think he's on the team as a regular i think you can see last night he's squeezing his stick a little hard he needs a lot more work you know on his overall game like you said a lot of missed opportunities there was a moment early on where he just struggled to get
Starting point is 00:27:26 the puck over the center ice line like it took him like two tries just to pass the puck to somebody so they get over the line but he's showing a lot of promise in that he doesn't look out of place you don't see him there and be like okay that's a child out on the ice like at training camp and everything he's hanging in all the drills and he looks like he belongs in there it's just his skill work and just i guess his puck sense too just needs to improve and that'll come with time and It's probably the speed of the game. And speed, too. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:55 All those little things need to improve, but he's an NHL-er. Yeah. Like, this isn't a prospect who's going to miss. No, I think he looks so much more confident this camp than he did last. His first camp two years ago, we were like, oh, my God. Like, Cowan might make the team as the 28th overall pick. Like, what the hell is going on? And I guess expectations got so high, we were like, where did the kid go?
Starting point is 00:28:19 and then the world juniors were awful and we're like oh what's going on murdered the ohl playoffs killed it he's a couple points away from setting the all-time record for points uh like career points in the ohl playoffs oh like he's not going back to you no you can't he won't break it like but he finished i think it was like a dozen points away from the all-time i want to say it was close to 40 in 17 games 38 or 39 oh you all time yeah 96 i'll look it up i'll look at it 96 points i i only know that because of the prospect pyramid right well i i i you know you want to take a look at these guys and what we keep saying is you know your expectations with easton cowan have to be and he's even said it that that he is not like a superstar right this guy is a very very good
Starting point is 00:29:12 player who needs to be a pest needs to be in the corners needs to use his speed uh but what he has always said is at the nhl level i know i'm not going to score the same and so you know he's got that expectation and it's to me it's the defensive side of the puck i didn't see any big blown plays in the defensive zone with him i think well to me it's not about the it's not necessarily about the defensive zone there was one i'm just going off of what he said there was one pass on the power play he made where i was like what are you doing like it was oh yeah yeah he was passing it back to the point and it was just so easily picked off and i'm like that's what's gonna get you taken out of the line right not necessarily his defense because i don't think the expectation is high
Starting point is 00:29:54 if you're gonna be in the lineup you need to be a factor on the power play and then he just made that one shitty pass i'm like that you're gonna get yelled at the next time you look at video yeah and then he has an assist on the only power play goal that scored last yes right so like there's the good and the bad and i think adam you nailed it with him learning a new style of game because yeah he has to recognize the way you put up points in the ohl you're not that type of player in the nhl you're a different grindy kind of player so he's learning how to change his game entirely yeah and that's gonna take a little bit you know he's not going out there coming in as like we need you to score goals no we need you to play hockey a different way which takes time so
Starting point is 00:30:33 he's learning and i think he's doing a good job learning those skills we see your hockey is is such a mixed bag like i i saw a clip the other day real hockey sickos know exactly the clip i'm talking about the rest of you are gonna have to look this up there was a player on the guelph storm named tyler carroll who was killing a penalty five on three and he lost his stick he blocks three shots with his feet oh that are gruesome he can't stand up at the end of it and the crowd losing their minds and i'm just like i i googled it because i'm like what happened to tyler carroll after that because that's one of my favorite hockey clips of just a guy balls on the line i'm getting this done go team he won a championship uh i think at the junior a
Starting point is 00:31:25 level never played a professional game no he ohl university i don't know what he does he works at kpmg no idea like no idea dude like one of the most iconic junior hockey like highlights i've seen never played a program i think pace of play is the thing that i always notice you know because we go we're lucky enough usually i mean jesse you go to every leafs home game but you know we're steve and i are lucky enough usually to sneak into a couple of games each year um and uh and when i see or and then obviously sometimes playoffs too um what i see at the junior level is the pace of play is just so much because children right remember their children i'm not this is not an insult and it's fast but it is an nhl fast and so what i think with easton cowan
Starting point is 00:32:10 the ahl is fast but it is a step down learn those things at a at a at a lower speed uh kind of like walking before you run crazy concept and then and then kind of get your way in and one one thing that i've been thinking is wouldn't it make sense i mean maybe he doesn't break camp with the team because they probably don't have the roster space. But wouldn't it be great if you could have him for the first couple of weeks and say, we got eight games here. We're going to play in four of them.
Starting point is 00:32:37 We want you to have a taste of what this is and what life is. Maybe get on a quick road trip and then you're going to the Marlies. And if you have a good year there, we'll see what things look like at the end of March. And that's, you know, or not. Maybe they won't need him.
Starting point is 00:32:50 But my point is, give him a taste so he knows because preseason hockey is a step down from the regular season. yeah and regular season hockey in october is a step down from regular season hockey in march especially if you're in a race so i look at this and i go okay give him that benchmark of this is what you need to be you're not there yet go be this with the marlies you're gonna get so much freaking ice time you are first liner all day you and hames and quillen uh go tear it up and then come back and i feel like that seems to be the right play i don't think that's wrong
Starting point is 00:33:24 the it's just i okay i'm starting to look at the roster now and i think i'm leaning towards they're gonna have one extra forward and two extra d yeah it's pretty clear that's what's gonna happen and it can't be cowan if there's only one because you have you know calm finney of robertson someone yarn croak someone is gonna get waved yeah um if camp gets waved i don't think he gets claimed he makes too much if yarn croak gets waived i think he maybe gets claimed oh pittsburgh cough also seems useful like i think yeah might get claimed because he's a center yeah he is a center that could play center too though makes makes a lot for a waiver claim nah yarn croak hasn't done it in so long yeah i i don't know man like i look at this because i was listening to leaf report a little
Starting point is 00:34:10 bit last night because cj was on it and you know that's the only reason well i mean it was also why why else would he listen to horse because because cj was filling in for jonas siegel who ran mitch marner out of town with the dog pound i saw that scary what do we know about jonas siegel right hey how do you sleep at night scary oh yeah scary man more like jonas the devil so i was listening to it because i thought okay this would be good insight and what cj was saying is like i don't he's like three of two of the three are likely gone in terms of robertson conf and yarn croak two of the three well think about it that's what it would have to be barring an injury yeah and so who do you keep and to me well and hames might get important pretty
Starting point is 00:34:56 fast eh well if if if those guys pass through waivers i tend to think robertson is the guy that would most likely not pass waivers because there's which is why you don't do it he exactly yeah but you could probably risk yarn croak and conf yeah and probably just like hey we got the cap space like whoopee yeah like like but with robertson he makes so little that you don't want to just lose them like you'd rather just keep him on the roster and he's all yeah he's also a good goal scorer right like that's a real legitimate talent that he has that shot that he has the way to get in the position that he can that like why wouldn't you if you're a team take a swing at nick robert losing easy losing the offense that you lost uh this summer is is stomachable if you do
Starting point is 00:35:42 the right things and i don't think getting rid of arguably your best depth score is one of them yeah you know um yeah it's the reason by the way i say it's 2d and one forward um think of how brad trill living thinks think of how he builds his teams they they do have a million d back there mermis is going to go on waivers who knows if he gets claimed um oh my god maybe maybe uh mermis is going on waivers uh benning is going to go on waivers he's going to pass through no problem myers i don't think makes it through and i think they really like him rafai goes on waivers i hope he makes it he's going through and i think if thrun gets put on waivers i think he gets claim but he's been and i wanted to bring him up i'm glad you brought him up yeah jesse people
Starting point is 00:36:36 especially like i read the jake mccabe quotes yesterday um people are singing his praises yeah he's a training camp favorite i think amongst the guys and and the coaching staff where like he's really come in and impressed because the bar for somebody who is a dump in a ryan reeves trade is so little oh my god it's on the floor for what we should have expected from henry thron and he's come in and just been like a you can see him as the eighth defenseman on this team no problem at all and i think that's that's really great that at least picked up this asset and somebody who's young enough where he can still get better it's not like yeah 30 and okay he's good he's 80 but that's kind of his ceiling there's still room to grow for this kid to get better benoit being
Starting point is 00:37:19 injured might give them some wiggle room but like the beginning of the season is not tomorrow it's how many days we got? We got like two weeks left. Yeah, they don't play until the, what, seventh? Yeah, I assume anyone... No, I think it's the eighth. I assume...
Starting point is 00:37:34 You did the 72, 73 guys in training camp thing again. Sorry, Jesse. Details are important. Sorry, sorry. They taught me that at... I was about to say When I don't know,
Starting point is 00:37:45 I just go the week of the eighth. You shouldn't say that at school. When I don't know, I go the week of the eighth. Details matter. You see? There you go. The eighth.
Starting point is 00:37:52 Nick Robertson is a defenseman. I'm very detail-oriented, and he's going to be a defenseman in a three-on-three league. All of that to say, I think the two extras are going to be Myers and Thrun, and then forward, I have no freaking clue. Do you think Thrun is on the team? I think he is. Well, just in terms of managing your assets, there's a chance Mermis gets claimed, and I say that because he did get claimed.
Starting point is 00:38:17 And he's arguably more appetizing to claim now than he was last year because he was coming off of an injury last year. Rafai, I hope, slips through. Myers is not going through. And then Thrun, I think, is a bit of a wild card. So I don't know. Thrun's had some interesting experience. I mean, this is a guy that was a part of the U-17 and U-18
Starting point is 00:38:39 U.S. national program. They play a lot of games. A very good program. Very good program that Canada ought to consider adopting before we continually get our ass kicked for the next 20 years because all those guys play together and they know each other. Yep. Um, Harvard university was the captain guy was basically a point of game defenseman.
Starting point is 00:38:58 Um, you know, for the horrible, you know, metrics that any San Jose sharks defenseman is going to have over the last three years, the guy still was putting up roughly 12 points, 11 points, 12 points every 60 games. Um, you know, this is a guy who does move the puck and has an attitude of, I want to be the best defenseman in the NHL. and even if you don't think he can what matters is that he does and and that type of attitude that sort of man is this guy this guy nuts yeah like most good athletes are kind of nuts and i kind of like that and i like that from everything i've heard that's the kind of guy
Starting point is 00:39:36 he is 24 years old um and he's going to you know i feel like we could have the makings of not the exact same player not the exact same but remember when benoit came in and you know the models statistically he was the worst defenseman in the league and simone benoit got a hundred thousand views on a youtube video from steve it's crazy still crazy that that happened simone thank you yeah um but he's come in and he's objectively their sixth best defenseman and and a very good one at that um steve gets obsessed with hockey db corner um whoever the leaf scout is for harvard university um i think the team likes a lot um on account of they've taken a ridiculous amount of players from that program okay from the 21 22 team they had
Starting point is 00:40:25 nick abrazizi who the leafs just lost henry thrun uh john fusco who's a draft pick of theirs and then the next year they had joe miller uh who is also a leaf draft pick and there was one other player i thought one other player one other player i can't find them but there's yeah for some reason they seem to really like players out of harvard they're like four guys they well i don't get it i'm just giving you shit oh you're an asshole oh because i said four you're a piece of shit um i let's talk about ben danford no uh relative does he play at harvard don't give a shit the thing about a guy with ben danford's play style is that you're hoping that you don't notice him because if you notice him that's probably bad and last night as i as i mentioned
Starting point is 00:41:11 earlier he made a good play clean play uh to austin matthews which led to them getting the zone entry which led to a goal eventually uh ben danford did not assist on that goal i'm not trying to overplay this but it was what i saw was okay he's on the high boards how does he handle this breakup simple silly stuff oh sorry not not silly stuff simple stuff uh that is the kind of stuff that's going to get you in the nhl why why did you clearly really like this yeah game there there's terms that get overused and are nauseating like he he plays a mature game but then i watched him and i was like all right fine it's it's a very mature poised game like he was out there with Oliver Ekman Larson like that's crazy for a guy who is probably going back to junior um like a guy
Starting point is 00:42:01 with that kind of experience underneath him he didn't look out of place he doesn't look scared of anybody he doesn't look outmatched physically at all um and he's not the biggest guy but he's just friggin strong um that's why I said he's gonna have a long NHL career like I I don't know when he makes it um but it's so his his game is so well seasoned already and he's not an offensive dynamo he just sort of consistently makes the right place he's not like uh like uh if we're looking in the leafs prospect system kade weber kade weber is huge and has no offense none to speak of zero danford last year i think had 20 25 assists in the ohl which is not very much but it's he's he's capable of it but the reason he's in the lineup is just a poised steady game
Starting point is 00:43:05 and on occasion he'll knock you into next week and when your dumb teammate comes in to defend you he'll knock him out too he's a nail gun i love him jess what did you what's your sense of how danford's camp's going i thought like last night in particular i thought him and oel were a good pair because their skills complement each other yes he would defer to oel a lot coming out of the zone and just like when they're making plays behind the net he'd be like okay let me get it over to him because i i honestly like i thought it was all of rackman larson right like if you're in that situation you're 19 years old and you're like let me defer to oel i don't think it's a bad way to handle your game and play simple and not make a mistake so you stand out in front
Starting point is 00:43:50 of the coaching staff and they're like look at this kid he made a mistake i thought he played really smart in a simple game and like like you said i think he's got a bright future i think he definitely needs to put on more size he's 19 like i said he's under i think a buck 90 at 6'2 i wonder if he's still growing i'm not sure if he's if his height's still growing but yeah i hope he's he gets a little bit of a bigger body but what he is right now is an unfinished project but right there there's a lot of the pieces to be a really good defenseman i love that he's a right-handed defenseman yeah that helps like that that really helps this what sucks though is i think he's got to go to the chl this year doesn't he yes he does yeah oh it's he can't play in in the age how old
Starting point is 00:44:30 was ben danford when oliver eckman larson made his nhl debut uh i can do the math he's 19 i know that so yeah and then oel would have made his debut about 10 years ago 2010 11 damn so a long time ago he was four oh my god he was four and when he was drafted he was three uh dennis hildeby had a good game uh arter akimov or aktyama aktyama it's aktyamov okay bowen was saying that why is it four syllables i don't know they're not saying it the russian way they're saying that the uh canadian the english way there's no t so acti i'm off yeah that's how everybody's saying it uh everyone's wrong i don't make the rules i'll die on this hill here's my gravestone on this hill here lies steve dangle axiom of his three syllables axiom of uh there is no timeline
Starting point is 00:45:24 set for joseph wool's return uh so and this is cj this morning a lot of cj quotes he's out there man you should explain what happened well he took a leave of absence uh and obviously nobody knows why because that's what a leave of absence is anything don't bother trying uh but cj said it's not the case where it's like okay i'm going to be gone for x amount of days and then i'll be back i don't think it's clear how long that absence is going to be and bradshaw living said well we'll return to the team but said how long that remains to be seen there will probably need to be some some ramp up which means dennis hildeby's game has just become extremely important and i thought he played pretty good last became pretty important at work and yeah and so you know
Starting point is 00:46:03 he didn't have great numbers at the nhl level last year no they were horrible but they like that he's feisty um obviously it's pre-season so we're not drawing too much into it but it was pretty clear who was the more nhl ready of the two goaltenders last last night uh dennis hildeby was much better than actiama i thought actiama made a good couple of saves but the goals he let in i was like oh he also came in cold he got into six games last year like this is a guy who was nhl experience and i thought i thought he was good through the first two periods i thought there was a couple really nice saves and athletic saves that um because he's such a big goalie you don't expect that but he's really starting to learn from stallers and how to control his body
Starting point is 00:46:43 as a huge dude and i like that they have two goalies who kind of mirror each other it's kind of like in the nfl where you have quarterbacks and if you have like a running quarterback like lamar jackson you want your backup to also be a running quarterback so then you keep your whole system the same with the with hildeby and stallers i feel like when hildeby's in there for stallers it's the same type of gold head thing and to that to me is i think advantageous to the least having healed to be as the backup there's a reason he got the extension that he did and it's not because no one else is available like it's oh man it's tantalizing like you're right he moves crazy for a big guy and he's are i maybe the biggest big guy like he might be bigger than stallers yeah
Starting point is 00:47:22 um i think he is slightly yeah like taller yeah yeah definitely not no dollars is not heavier Beef. Beef and net. I like Akhtumov's game. I thought he got kind of hung out to dry a little bit, and I really liked him in the first game. But there was a time last year where Hildeby was in the NHL looking awful, and Akhtumov was 9-0 in the A.
Starting point is 00:47:48 And I was like, oh, is this guy about to lose his gig? What's going on? It's pretty clear who's ahead of who. and listen you got to be able to provide something a little bit better than 870 um if you need to fill in for wool a little bit here yeah which it looks like he will have to be i don't know we'll see it's just based on the pacing of like training camp you know yeah if yeah he if he's gonna need some ramp up time then it's we're running out of time it's the couple weeks lead up to october eighth yeah you got to assume the eighth hildeby and hildeby and aktimov are gonna
Starting point is 00:48:23 probably play a lot more than was planned uh which you know you don't want your teammate to be away but that's pro sports is next man up yeah and that happens to be you so what are you going to do with it yep i look at uh i look at this by the way next year at this time we're going to be talking about regular season games uh they're starting in the last week of september next year so that's exciting i love that which is very cool but i i the the the other thing i think in the goaltending is that um i guess both sides keep going back and forth with anthony stallers and the lease in this extension so here's my question to you okay would you rather a five-year deal with a lower aav or a four-year deal with a higher aav what the hell five you would go five years yeah
Starting point is 00:49:08 that now there's concerns about injury and does that become a boat anchor but if you're keeping that at four four and a half million dollars on a five-year deal i don't hate that no not at all i don't again i'm not part of these negotiations but like we think it's going to be between 4.5 and 5 million bucks if you can save money on your aav i mean five years from now you know barring another covid it's hard to imagine that you know at that point it's about three percent of your cap probably or less it's hard to imagine that being a major impediment right i'm there are uh there are goalie contracts with greater red flags already like there's no there's legans alvis well there's i mean that's just a mistake but like demco is making over eight
Starting point is 00:50:00 as a guy who at his best is truly an elite goalie but there's no evidence that he'll ever return to that no uh spencer knight there's no evidence that he'll ever be that we don't ever be that we don't know i think i think he will yeah and like damn because crazy goalie but like when he signed that deal i was like holy fucking shit like that's wow okay you really got faith in this thing okay uh stallers at like four and a half over here yeah jesse over here do you worry about the fifth year and deal like that do you care that much there's always a bit of concern like it's not a hundred percent and nothing ever is never played more than 32 games yeah we don't know if it's gonna work out but i would make that bet okay i'm i'm making i think there's a higher
Starting point is 00:50:47 percentage it does work out than it doesn't so yeah i like i like stallers at that number 4.5 that's really good uh now when when listening to the leaf report cj kind of said that you know there hasn't been any real trading partners for robertson conf and yarn croak so you know talking about losing those guys and waivers which i already mentioned but um uh the leafs are in a market for the top six guy that was talked about on insider trading last night that was talked about at the intermission on tsn last night uh it's been talked about all summer i have to tell you i don't think i would rather them go sign jack roslovich and put him in that spot then go and blow assets unless it's something crazy but again i don't know that the leafs have the assets to
Starting point is 00:51:32 make something crazy out of it dropping the the one thing they have is their 2028th first like i don't know i don't think you can do that this also what spot like the michelli spot or the mcmahon spot those guys i think deserve a shot at that those spots like i don't think you go out and you sign rostovic and it's like okay mcmahon like now you don't get that or michelli and domi like you don't get that i think like start the season with this see what you have then make a move if those guys can't fill those gaps you're looking for a solution to a problem that may not exist yeah you're creating a solution to something that isn't there you're gonna trade your 28 first round pick for for what for you have no idea i understand this conversation in december
Starting point is 00:52:18 if you want to go to the intermission and be like hey who do they get because domi and michelle aren't working out or mcmahon isn't what we think he is but matthews is healthy and his scoring camp like i don't know they seem like they have enough guys to give shots to yes well yes so i i this is where i i wanted to and steve you mentioned this earlier but i want to come back to it because I wanted to kind of drill down on it. You know, the best players in the league are able to elevate good players to be great. And look at Sidney Crosby with Chris Kunitz
Starting point is 00:52:47 and Pascal Dupuy. No disrespect to those guys in their career, but there's no way Chris Kunitz is at the Olympics if Sidney Crosby is like, doesn't want him there. Do you know what I mean? Given the depth they had at the time. People forget that. He was a top line Olympian
Starting point is 00:53:01 because he was Sidney Crosby's line mate and they had such great chemistry. 100%. austin matthews and you know tavaris neilander as well but austin matthews is the one we're kind of focusing on he's already got matthew nice you need a guy to feed them you got two guys that can feed i don't understand why there is this need for we got that has to be solved now if you do feel like that's a problem look at next year's free agency class because you're trying too many people are trying to recreate last year's leafs but you don't want to find
Starting point is 00:53:35 yourself in that position again yes you have a core for you there's a reason we don't have last year's leaves it didn't work so use your the problem is we haven't had the chance to exercise our imagination for a while now and people are stuck in their way struggling with it the stamina for their their imagination doesn't have a doesn't have great wind right now and you're gonna have to not every team has two 11 million dollar plus players on their top line um or like you imagine if marner was still here and it's nice making 775 or whatever it is matthew's at 13 and a quarter and marner and marner at 12 let's say well it wouldn't have been 12 it wouldn't have been so have been 13 what is that 32 three million dollars on your top line that's just not how
Starting point is 00:54:35 every team is built that's not how any team is built actually not even the oilers uh who it looks like are gonna have mcdavid and dry sidle i'm i really hope we get to that quote we are but later i don't think i don't think they will have that okay well neither because it's a dumb thing to do right um i i have faith that one of michelli or domi can get this done and if they can't then you solve the problem jesse your thoughts even if those two can't get it done there are internal candidates yeah sorry yeah no no i don't want to repeat myself like i think i think there's enough guys there to give a shot here for the next two weeks at training camp like there's no reason to make moves i don't and i don't know if bradger living is trying to do that i think he's in on
Starting point is 00:55:17 everything as we go as we always reiterate he's always looking at what there is and you're if you're a smart manager you're always trying to upgrade your team like what if if leon dry side was available for david conf like you want to know that yeah and you want to make that move so i assume he's out there always looking at what's available on the trade market do i think he pulls the trigger in the next week to fill in a gap that doesn't need to be filled because you have six forwards who could fill that spot no i don't see them i don't think he's gonna do that I could see them making a trade before the season, and you're going to be blown away by how underwhelming it is.
Starting point is 00:55:51 Yes. Yeah, the mid-off trade is coming. Like, Sam Lafferty for a fifth? Like, hell yeah. That shit's coming. Oh, they want even more depth. Ooh. No, no.
Starting point is 00:56:04 Like, a few years ago, they traded Sam Lafferty for a fifth. Oh, for the fifth. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, and now you're going to get, oh boy, maybe even a little future considerations action. maybe a little conditional seventh maybe brad's got his negotiating hat on it's a it's a uh uh oh my god a conditional i forgot the word conditional for a minute a conditional sixth um i can see that trade happening for calm for yarn crow so you don't lose them on waivers like
Starting point is 00:56:34 if he's talking the other gms and one of them's like interested in comp and they're going to claim him either way and they need to set him down that stuff makes sense yep are you getting somebody who's a top six forward for like something significant in your system or your assets that doesn't make sense you might trade comp for a top six forward on the cincinnati cyclones yeah there you go there you should all go steel go dubas style yeah now we're talking with gas if we're anticipating the conf yonkroak trade like yeah i anticipate that for sure uh moving on to the edmonton oilers there is a tryout for mcdavid's winger before before we could jump to another team can we clean up corner clean up uh first of all it was julian oh it was yeah you
Starting point is 00:57:14 were very wrong you're very right okay uh it was julian who asked the question um to travis green and the other thing easton cowan's playoff points all time he sits second all time damn uh 96 points 102 is the record so he's he finishes all time uh six points back of tying the all-time record for playoff points in the ohl from which shit wayne perry rules wayne wayne gruel uh owns the all-time what flag is that is that austria i guess so it looks wow wayne gruel yeah ryan ellis in junior was so stupid so if we have we read through the top five or top six so we can get to ellis cowan's at 96 gruels at 102 stan drulia is at 93 rob shrimp 90 cory perry 88 ryan ellis 88 Ryan Ellis
Starting point is 00:58:06 defenseman how far down do you have to go to find the next closest defenseman let's see oh my god oh my god there it is Jamie Rivers Jamie Rivers who I don't know NHL player I remember him all right I
Starting point is 00:58:23 remember him and Chris Felix 69 points I'm proud of you Steve yeah you know Jamie Rivers holy shit though no Ryan Ellis was cracked yeah he was cracked at the nhl level too he was he was but windsor spitfires ryan ellis was something else he his d partner was someone adam and i went to high school with who rob quit oh really that's right that's cool so i i think just to finish that point on easton cowan 40 minutes later this is a kid who
Starting point is 00:58:49 put up points in the ohl he's not going to be that player in the nhl yes yeah exactly and as you see most of them are not. hear that? It's your money calling. You're richer than you think. cancer is something that affects unfortunately every single family we we all have experience with it light the night is a uniquely canadian experience which is why we're so excited to tell
Starting point is 01:00:00 you about it uh it unites communities coast to coast funds raised here stay here so uh if you raise the funds in canada it stays in canada and it feeds local innovation community support national impact and we talk about uh you know um the fact canada in terms of cancer research is one of the leaders in the world, which is amazing, but also some of the pioneers of great care, bedside manner, support for families, that sort of thing. And that's what Light the Night's about. $6 million raised for blood cancer research and support programs last year. This year, with your help, they want to make a bigger impact. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada is the nation's leading nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness, funding life-saving cancer
Starting point is 01:00:44 research excuse me and providing vital support to uh people affected by blood cancers and so um if you want to join uh if you want to donate whatever it is and you can also form a team too because it's always when you do these walks light the night's cool it's at night so you're you're carrying uh lanterns and stuff like that it's more fun yeah yeah especially in the fall a nice night walk in the fall it's like oh it's kind of fun and cool uh light the night.ca that's very inspiration will be a part of this uh again you can form a team donate yourself uh or just sign up by yourself it doesn't really matter light the night.ca now uh tryouts for um uh at connor mcdavid's wing zach hyman is obviously out for the first three months of the season three months
Starting point is 01:01:30 we've known that for a while um and you know you hope he's back and healthy for the olympics that's i'm sorry oilers fans i don't care about your team as much as i care about the canadian olympic team And that's okay. I would expect that back the other way. But David Tomasek and Trent Frederick are getting auditions. So Tomasek was demoted. Frederick is going to go in. But Chris Knobloch did say that it's looking likely David Dreisaitl to open the season.
Starting point is 01:01:53 And I thought this was interesting. He said, he said, he thinks, he said, one thing I think when they are playing together is you get a lot more out of the other three lines. This might sound ironic, but the others get more ice time that is available when those who are playing 21-22 minutes, there isn't much ice left for the third and fourth lines when they feel left out.
Starting point is 01:02:14 Meaning, if you split them up, they both have to play 21-22 minutes a night. So that's two lines sucking up two periods. And so then you can, the third and fourth lines just don't play as much.
Starting point is 01:02:28 So it's a good thing that our players who are not our best players play more. That's what he's saying. Wrong. worth noting that he's out of contract at the end of the season i'm kidding well actually him and ryan huskin well you know that gives a opportunity to the coaches who aren't
Starting point is 01:02:47 as good uh do you give it up yeah no i just i don't understand that like okay like the logic is we have one insane impossible to stop line which it's not impossible to stop it we've seen it before this you're just going back to the pre-good oilers they have done this already they did it for long stretches and it wasn't great they put up a shitload of points and lost a lot of games um the the logic i guess is the other guys get easier matchups well they're yes and they're also better than they were back then that is true at forward and also the the the um the theory behind the oilers is so much stronger than it used to be that's 100 true right like the the yeah you know your your thousand foot vision i i look at this but
Starting point is 01:03:36 because your depth is better i think that it makes sense to break them up yes i agree uh but i also think what's he supposed to say because here's the thing something if connor mcdavid is under contract for three more years at this point uh yeah trent frederick or whoever uh jeff jefferson starts on that wing and you're like hey connor listen zach's not gonna be back till december jan um and you're gonna have to try to work make it work with this guy because we gotta we gotta it's a long season we gotta grind it out we don't want to overplay you uh we want you ready for the playoffs and we know that's an olympic year right that's what you do but because he has not signed it's sort of like well now we got to dance a little bit here if he's unhappy for the first
Starting point is 01:04:21 three months and he starts saying stuff like yeah it's really frustrating even though it might be if they lose a game or something like that well that becomes a story and that becomes a distraction for the team so you know from the Oilers past two seasons where they've gone to the Stanley Cup despite the worst starts ever in October and October yeah you know that if yeah let's just make them happy who cares what happens in October we all know what this team is and and it's true they do so I I look at it like man just let them have some fun the first few months who cares Oilers fans I need you in the comments what's the stress level I'm not don't give me a percentage on like what you think about him coming back or what what's the stress level because I don't
Starting point is 01:05:07 expect an NHL team to walk on eggshells with anybody even the best player in the world but like you said seems like a bit of a delicate dance yes and you're the first strategy is like tomasek no oh okay uh perhaps trent frederick and if i'm an oilers fan my heart rate is elevated you know what i mean i'm getting a little stressed here and yes they went to back-to-back cup finals the bar is higher right oh my team do better than your team i know your team has a higher bar no one's like leaf stanley cup final or bust stanley cup final or the whole uh trajectory of the franchise is going to change no one's saying that about my team no no one's saying that about most teams save for oilers wild i guess
Starting point is 01:06:04 i think that's the end of the list even the panthers you're like yeah they didn't make the final so all those guys are signed until the sun explodes like yeah it's a i'm feeling a little bit of stress radiating from alberta right now like okay looking at the second line right now that jesse has on the screen dry sidle in the middle of pod colson and cappinan that worked i like that tell the people what it is right now nuge in the middle of pod colson and captain nuge is a great player but now you got him full-time center and listen bless him he's a downgrade yeah but he's not leon dry side let me be fair that line did have a success last yeah i did that that was a very successful line so that's why he wants to run it back right i know but like
Starting point is 01:06:55 it's seeing quotes like oh yeah tomasek and henrik are gonna fight it out for uh 3c i don't remember who had that one i'm like i it's it's an interesting idea by knoblock to give friend frederick the shot uh initially for the role but next to dry silent mcdavid because they play tonight so we're gonna see this tonight their first preseason game i think the mcdavid dress up playing uh together so it's gonna score eight he's trying to recreate the hyman magic right he's getting somebody who's similar to hyman's skill set throwing him there and just saying let's see if this thing is super effective and i guess if you're if you're him you're going for broke at the beginning of the season because you're like at adam's point you
Starting point is 01:07:38 want this to work if mcdavid if this doesn't work with david he's gone so why not throw out my best option at all times have the that line go gangbusters and we'll see if it works out i would love every once in a while i'd like to see manjapani with him oh manjapani howard i keep banging the howard drum this is the first tryout like i assume he's gonna try some other people who are they playing and what is their lineup uh i probably can't tell you the lineup at this time but i think they're playing chicago i gotta look oh my god some poor seattle oh thank god it's not chicago seattle okay so some poor defenseman on the coachella valley firebirds is gonna go up against dry sidle mcdavid and who cares uh good luck out there good luck have fun i listen make
Starting point is 01:08:34 sure whoever you got in the stands takes lots of pictures and make sure they get it on the zone entry uh not when the puck is in the back of the net because i think it might be a long night for you it looks like the kraken will have veneers caco and nyman out there that's it no in terms of like uh their top line shane wright i think is playing same with jayden schwartz and jordan everly so they're gonna have some nhl players you haven't named a defenseman yet oh you want the defense yeah uh alexiak's gonna be in the lineup okay uh kale flurry kale flow okay ty nelson tyson jugnoff oh okay i recognize the name olivson uh josh mahera so there those those are six so alexia yeah you're just alexiac and it got a bunch of guys alexiac mahera probably
Starting point is 01:09:28 tasked with controlling mcdavis and and i'm sure they'll love watching 97 fly right by him i knew a guy who played one nhl preseason game and he has his jersey from that game and he hangs it above his desk and that's awesome that's gonna potentially be one of these guys tonight is just have your jersey and a picture of you helplessly trying to stop mcdavid and tricidal because that's that's crazy according to nhl.com that's the uh projected lineup there for the kraken so if you want to see what up the oilers up again so that is it nyman benears caco schwartz right eberly sale who's sale mlb pitcher chris sale sell out maybe i don't know molgaard hayden myers morrison fergus it's just named jaeger fergus yeah yeah yeah
Starting point is 01:10:17 olufsen flurry jugnoth nelson decord uh they're not throwing decor out there are they it looks like it let's projected starter well i mean if you're laugh on tape pre-season guys yeah like one of those other two goalies is gonna go up against that clusterfuck and just go oh okay well i'll do my best when i walked in today i did not anticipate we'd be talking about the krakens projected pre-season it matters jesse uh but here we are here we are folks dude it's very funny to think about just guys who may never play in the nhl having to go up against mcdavid and dry saddle in the same line i think it'll be a great story for them one day of course it will but also like you get to like there are people having like waking up in
Starting point is 01:11:13 sweaty nightmares sweats where they dream the reality you're about to live anyway have fun i think it's gonna be tough yep how long do you think this lasts which david dries out on the same line by the end of the second period i no i mean into the season oh i think it i think i think i think you don't want to why aggravate him yeah you want to entice him to sign before next uh spring or next summer uh so uh i would say just let her run unless they are one in ten uh like they were the last two octobers and then you go you know what connor like i know that we don't let me just let me just try this other thing yeah because no block said in the quote that this is probably what they're
Starting point is 01:11:57 going to go with to start the season that's why they're running it out now and i think if he's committing to it now and it's obviously going to work because of the two of them that this actually might get a little bit of a run ultimately it really doesn't matter uh what they do because what is it going to come down to is the goaltending do they have it or do they not early uh one spot we're not looking at on that roster so there's two things manjapani i i feel like you didn't get him for that third line role maybe you did he's obviously capable of it but i mean that's what he was doing in um in washington yeah yeah um the other one is kapanen has not been a consistent top six player for a long time and and i know that's what he was
Starting point is 01:12:39 for you in the playoffs he never really was he just was a guy who made uh 20 goals yeah not a top six guy he shouldn't have been a top six guy he had his limitations i i just don't know how long that lasts yeah yep all right um by the way worth mentioning just on the least very quickly ben was still off the ice with the upper body injury has not skated in a few days so that must be a little more serious than we thought do not like um jonathan tase played his first preseason game with the jets uh yesterday had no shots um and remember you know this is his first game in several years but i think an ongoing story like and we talked about this monday and i want to repeat this the question now it's yeah okay the pom-pom things is over we're excited that he's
Starting point is 01:13:26 there can he play and it was a quiet night played with uh perfetti and nyquist um guys that have some offensive touch they were the first line it's pre-season uh shifley is clearly the top center there that's okay but i'm i'm wondering what a reasonable expectation of jonathan tase's first month back in the nhl what's the first month because people are going to hot take the shit out of it and maybe we will too but i feel like with this you want to just make sure positionally and defensively first he is the player that he was and then you would imagine the scoring would come later i think that's a great way to look at it yeah um uh the two-way play needs to be the primary concern but because you can let perfetti and nyquist score yeah but
Starting point is 01:14:15 you're a second line center in the nhl you have to score you have to score like this is a it's a great feel-good story i love it um you have a job to do and and he is making significant dollars if he hits those bonuses it's 5.25 i think is the top end it's two million base two million two million base but it's oh god that's gonna be so annoying to keep track of during the season for the dozen or so guys that have it um you know there's a world where this works out great he returns the form he's unreal and when adam lowry is healthy one is two and one is three and all of a sudden you have crazy wicked depth there's no guarantee this works out and then all of a sudden you're kind of in trouble right right i i would imagine the jets really just have no choice but to be
Starting point is 01:15:05 patient with them yes right yeah well i assume they they signed him knowing that yeah you know this might not look great till i don't know pick whichever thanksgiving ideally the canadian one might be the american one right okay it's so interesting because 37 his age is old for an nhl player that's been playing the entire time and this is an elder statesman who took a couple years off and was not around the game of hockey and it's not like as you said last episode um or was it on our previews i forget but you made the comparison about landis gog who's time off too yeah that's somebody who's training with the avalanche the whole time the whole damn time caves wasn't doing that with an nhl team so it's fascinating like the preseason games it's glorified
Starting point is 01:15:53 practice i don't know how many times i can say it over the next couple weeks it's practice like there's so much so little you can take away from those games except for like evaluating them in practice so it's once the games start how will that translate for him like getting back in nhl action i think you're right in that he needs to focus on the defensive side of game if he can like hone in and just try and be 75 of his selkie self again that's successful for me oh yeah like if he doesn't put up any points i'm like okay with that but if he's like a defensive genius again i'm like that's great for two million dollars for a 37 year old who hasn't can you get 40 points at him i don't know i think 40 points i'm not judging him by the points you know i think you have to
Starting point is 01:16:32 second line center he does have to score he's second but he's second line center by circumstance it's because uh adam lowry you know he shouldn't be in that role i think if he's a really good shut down third line center you have something good in taves and i think everything else on top of that is bonus it'd be nuts if like by the time the playoffs come the jets have him in like their bottom six and then all of a sudden you have jonathan taves yeah and like just a penalty killing depth role i think a healthy jets they have a stack down the middle uh the center depth like it's good yeah yeah yeah but for them it's it's all imagination right now yeah there's no idea how this that is what's so frustrating about this time of year because it is it is a you know
Starting point is 01:17:14 you are watching hockey and everybody's like yeah but everything you say doesn't matter i'm like well it matters a little bit people like preseason games don't matter i'm like well they matter like a little including what you just said moving on why what yeah why why are they playing them then they don't matter they're well yeah they get ramped up like last night you can see guys who are like i haven't played a game in a while you know i need to just get my lungs back into me and that's what the guys are always saying i don't like the score is so irrelevant oh yeah it doesn't matter if somebody wants to say it doesn't matter i agree with them dude oliver ekman larson last night when he got punched in the face yeah he was and just yeah but he was pissed and then
Starting point is 01:17:52 went to the every kid at leo's timbits would have got to the bench faster yeah he just then he did and it wasn't even because he was hurt he was just mad yep and you know why he did that because the game doesn't count exactly like craig berube if that's a regular season game it's like what's the matter with you yeah it doesn't matter yeah um one one thing with taves uh if there are any mistakes he gets to make um he gets to do them in front of connor hellebuck which is that's pretty not a bad situation pretty cool um alex petrangelo would not shut the door on his potential return to the nhl now pierre lebrun did confirm yesterday that he's not playing this year and will not suit up in the playoffs either but he did petrangelo did say i'm feeling a lot better
Starting point is 01:18:42 and i believe after this year he's got two more years left on his deal so you know there's been rumors about rasmus anderson and the vegas golden knights because the rumor i think was that rasmus would only accept a trade there because it's or he would accept a trade anywhere but he's only signing in vegas and carter hart and carter hearts on there but i it looks like this morning mcleod and heart have made significant progress with carolina that's what sarah volley was reporting oh really yeah so i i don't know now that can always change again but that's what the report is as of this recording i mean that makes more sense because i'm looking at vegas like all right you can't have everyone yeah like what the yeah well i asked somebody and they were like yeah
Starting point is 01:19:18 they would probably roll a heart and eden hill i was like so shit there is that's pretty good there is a way that could work just this was my crude calculation i'm not 100 confident it's correct but uh so they have the 8.8 million dollars that petrangelo makes they're over the cap by i think it's 7.6 or whatever it is their backup goalie is akira schmidt so if you send akira schmidt out in a trade or waivers or whatever that cap hit comes completely off the books and you replace it with another goalie you the vegas golden knights will have just over two million to either sign a goalie or get Rasmus Anderson crazy retained or something like I don't even know if they'd be able to retain enough on him doesn't he make four and a half yeah they couldn't
Starting point is 01:20:13 so you'd have to send someone else out the door it's possible but there's a lot of finagling well I'm just thinking that that Vegas is big offseason acquisition next year if he's healthy as Alex petrangelo but he's his body was in really rough shape to end the year and i guess the focus is on being a good father first um and making sure that that is taken care of but if he can get his body right again vegas doesn't need to do anything next summer like you add petrangelo that group that's pretty scary yes it is um uh but yes i i thought i'm like no way are they bringing this guy freaking back but they're not uh it's not playing this season if they found a way to bring him back this season i tell you what i hope they are unreal i hope everyone has a career year
Starting point is 01:20:59 leading into the olympics um so that all the canadian guys are great at the olympics then i hope before the first game they return they trade their entire future to load up at the deadline and then after they've mortgaged their future i hope they never win a game again i hope they miss the playoffs and are just fucked because that's insane yeah well they're not he's not coming back i know the surgery he has to have to the bilateral femur reconstruction is terrible it means it sounds terrible both of his femurs are just broken to death and it's something that like doctors have to do when somebody goes through something traumatic like they're in a terrible car accident i just got goosebumps
Starting point is 01:21:46 my teeth are tingling like oh like this it happens to hockey players because of the intensity they put on on their that midsection there yeah but it happens to like regular people when they're in like traumatic events and it involves like regrafting bones and sometimes they have to stagger the surgeries because they have to put like rods in there and like you lose some of the ability to just function in everyday life so it's a long recovery process so for him to try and fight back to play this at his age like i don't imagine he uh he wants to go but you gotta have a north star you gotta have a reason to get up in the morning and do this really painful rehab he's gonna have to yeah so if you mention like him and his family and like living everyday life
Starting point is 01:22:31 that's a big consideration in this because this is intensive surgery that he's gonna go through okay so yeah it's not great yeah his both his femurs are destroyed they need to get in there and graft everything back together. Jesse, I heard you the first time, actually. You know the femur's the biggest bone in your body. Imagine what it feels like when that snaps. Okay, Luke Hughes and the Devils are still a ways apart, and I keep wondering, I keep asking myself,
Starting point is 01:22:57 until Luke Hughes signs, I feel like Dougie Hamilton is a devil, right? But as soon as Luke Hughes signs, he does sign, and I think it'll be less than what Luke Hughes wants because he's an RFA, and also they have Dougie Hamilton, and if he's healthy, they don't need him as much. it'll be very interesting to see how this plays out because if luke's holds out long term then you're okay what number does dougie hamilton wear and is it available in vegas
Starting point is 01:23:24 he's not going to nothing applies to them why not just play in vegas well they've gotten those rules the the rules that vegas used and abused yeah uh and then the lightning did it just be over the cap yeah what are they going to do cancel the games well you can be over the cap you just get it recaptured the next year yeah all right well there you go why not why not vegas golden knights caprizov get in there conor mcdavid get in there i don't think that's not where you're going right you want to have a luke hughes dougie hamilton i did i did it was sort of like when i brought the ducks last time and then steve was like hey well let me tell you about their captain by the way you know what's big baby beard i was back to the point that was made into a friggin
Starting point is 01:24:06 social media clip for us and i'm like but we actually had a good discussion after that yeah but what steve said was more interesting i thought we had a good discussion during i like what i was saying um i i what do you want to say about the stupid devils adam i'm curious i'm curious about this because the devils are in a really good spot here this is a good team they're healthy um and you look at you look at what they have on defense i was like yeah like listen luke hughes is awesome to have um but luke hughes filled in for dougie hamilton last year if dougie hamilton comes in and is dougie hamilton well then where's luke hughes's negotiating power they want to do a long-term deal which means the price goes up i actually wonder in this case do
Starting point is 01:24:45 you do you bridge it and risk it um and just and just get them into the lineup i don't know if i think a lot of hockey fans are rushing the devils i think we all have very high expectations for a team who hasn't actually done anything i think they look great yeah yep um i thought they were gonna be much better last season there are very obvious reasons for why they didn't do much better this is not a i think generally speaking bridge deals are dumb and bad for your team um unless you're forced into them and the teams that are usually forced into them are teams that have an immediate window right now i think the devils will probably be in that window in short order they're not there yet like you should be doing what you did with jack get them locked
Starting point is 01:25:47 up long term but looking at where the wind is blowing if you think you're getting luke hughes for the money you're giving jack i think you're nuts like long term nope uh-uh if you get him at eight times eight he's doing you an enormous favor i think that number should be at least nine well if he was a right shot defenseman we're talking 10 million here yeah he's left so that's too bad yeah too bad broke boy yeah yeah no i i if if i'm him no way i'm not signing for what my brother did that was years ago and it was a bet too like everyone is looking at if jack hughes does what we all think he's capable of that's one of the best contracts in the nhl if he's a consistent 100 plus point player for eight million bucks as like your top center it's amazing holy
Starting point is 01:26:39 shit i i don't see a world where it makes sense for him to sign for that amount of money jesse do you immediately try to trade a dougie hamilton if you sign luke hughes or do you just keep them all on the same team and screw it sometimes there isn't enough puck to get it go around and that's what it is so when you initially brought it up i poo-pooed the idea because of the way the sides that each of the players play on i think having luke hughes on your left side he's left shot defenseman and dougie hamilton is a right shot defenseman makes a lot of sense i don't i don't necessarily see as you're bringing hughes in and you can get rid of hamilton because now that slot's filled i think you'll still need some help on that right side but after you brought up the
Starting point is 01:27:23 idea it seems like uh people are saying things that they might behind the scenes have the idea that that cap hit is worth getting rid of to fit who they need to sign for the short term in the long term yeah and and nemish you pick second overall like so that's your help on the right side going forward we have things coming yeah nine million dollars is a lot we want that money for hughes and nemich eventually so maybe hamilton despite playing on the other side is the guy we should get rid of because that's a lot of money to spend for this player and there's even if there's 10 teams he can be traded to even if you keep hamilton this season he's not a fit going forward for the reasons you just laid out yeah he is a fit if that's if that's the way you think you're
Starting point is 01:28:12 going to be successful like if you if you say like having hughes and hamilton is a dynamic doer that can win us the stanley cup then he's a fit yeah but if you think that like building your team long term is is a better is you can be more successful by reallocating that nine million dollars and that ice time to other players then you go that direction so i do think it is an interesting conversation to have and i'm not sure what direction they go in because these negotiations don't look like they're very clear no in that they can come together very soon on a on a comp and a number that's comfortable for both sides. Where are they at on cap space?
Starting point is 01:28:46 $5 million, five points on and Kovacevich and Nason are both injured. So they'll probably have more, but so they'd be able to fit them. But my, my thing is okay. Okay. Maybe you do keep it all together,
Starting point is 01:28:57 but I, I would look around the league and I look at a team like San Jose that has only drafted and no disrespect to some of their defense prospects because they do have some, but they've been take longer. The notably great players that they've drafted, you know, Eklund,
Starting point is 01:29:12 Misa, Smith um uh who else would who else am I oh yeah Celebrini um uh you know those guys are all forwards yeah and I look at Dougie Hamilton at nine million bucks which they could easily fit who is 32 years old so still good come play with a young team you know to fully well um and and that gives us the right shot defenseman that every team needs to take a step forward unless san jose is really and truly going for um gavin mckenna which i can't blame them for then i then i'd look at chicago or anaheim and i think chicago more than anaheim i don't think the sharks are a dougie hamilton away from being out of basement contention i don't think they are either that's
Starting point is 01:29:57 not the point yeah i think the point is you have you have to have an anchor in there somewhere you gotta have you gotta have somebody who's played significant hockey at a high level on your top pair um even begin to talk about taking a step the biggest and most complicated trade of both those gm's careers was with each other um mike greer oh tom fitzgerald did i think it was a that was timo meyer right yeah but it was like eight or nine or ten assets and players going back and forth it was crazy and it involved the sharks getting back maybe their best defense defensive prospect in Shakira Mookamadulan. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:30:38 That's an interesting thought, Adam, mentioning San Jose. Well, and I would say Chicago, too. And I know they've got a lot of great young defensemen coming up. You need guys who can mentor. Listen, we've been through a rebuild in Toronto. One thing you can't deny is the regular season success of the Toronto Maple Leafs. And what they had was, here's what they had. They had a bunch of guys who had played significant games.
Starting point is 01:30:59 JVR, Nazem Khadri, Tyler Bozak, Leo Komarov. um and then on the back end where they were always thin and never figured it out their guys were morgan riley who was very young nikita zaitsev who just got over from russia had one good year matt hunwick matt hunwick ron hainsey at one point like it wasn't that's roman polak yeah but this is the thing is that those guys are all guys whereas roman or roman roman polak i was gonna say dougie hamilton is more than just any guy this is dougie hamilton oh he's still an incredible player that's and and i feel like at that time could use that i i don't want anyone to think i'm disrespecting his game i'm just looking at their decor going there's one puck like i don't
Starting point is 01:31:42 know maybe maybe you're nuts maybe maybe you're just nuts back there but i i don't understand the the finances right now okay how you make that work yeah that's what i'm saying i think there could be some some value brought back depends on where teams want to go i think chicago wants to get better now quicker than san jose does so yeah and with the seth jones gone yes you've got a lot of young guys but i don't know i feel like any team could probably use a dougie hamilton maybe they'll maybe the least look at that basically every kick those tires bard correct those kick those tires uh uh one little note too i wanted to say rasmus anderson we mentioned and we can get into the press conference after this um still likely to be traded but pierre lebrun did leave
Starting point is 01:32:24 the door slightly open he said maybe if there was an eight-year deal on the table maybe the flames not not the fans are so annoying well but but that's not the flame saying that that would be Rasmus Anderson's camp probably saying well if they wanted to go to eight years maybe we would talk about it was it also Zdorov's camp was it also Lindholm's camp was it also Hannafin's camp was it also Tanev's camp was it also Markstrom's camp shut up you guys are so noisy
Starting point is 01:33:00 oh my god no one almost does stuff more than the Calgary Flames maybe Brad oh Brad's Brad fit in well there I think he did until he didn't
Starting point is 01:33:12 no man they're holy shit noisiest team in the world just do it then I just thought that was interesting I don't know there's an insane amount the a trade with the calgary flames is a dragon ball z saga it's just 20 episodes of yelling and powering up followed by the episode that you've been watching for the
Starting point is 01:33:36 entire time right which is the actual trade yeah it's every trade with the calgary flames is a spirit bomb and annoying jesse now if you were to guess what rasmus anderson gets paid next year four and a half million right now right shot defenseman that's a real good deal maybe not mobile in the way that you would want a top pairing defenseman to be but he's pretty great pretty great at hockey uh bit of a bastard oh yeah we love a bastard is this guy eight is he nine is he 10 right shot defenseman potential free agent yeah especially because he's 28 years old and you're trading for him likely to try to extend him which gives him more cards i think personally it starts with double digits wow i think it's low double digits somebody goes to
Starting point is 01:34:28 that number wow man he's timed this perfectly like look at the proveroff contract 8.5 yeah if there's a team out there willing to pay proveroff that there's other teams who are willing to pay anderson i think ted dude vlad gavrikov makes seven right i don't know yo vlad gavrikov is worth seven and i will die on that hill okay fine but who would you rather have oh rasmus anderson right all right this is this is what i'm saying like years ago i don't know when he became a seven million dollar defenseman because i swear years ago it's like yeah four or five like you you even look at what zadorov got before the cap went up Six million.
Starting point is 01:35:10 Holy shit. My brain is still adjusting. Because you say double digits for Anderson. I'm like, you're out of your mind. And I look around the league. I'm like, okay, maybe. You listed a bunch of teams who might want to acquire Dougie Hamilton. I think that same list is a list of teams who might want to pay Anderson double digits.
Starting point is 01:35:28 Yes. And the issue with that is that Anderson, even though he denied it at camp, it's been out there enough that I'm like, yeah, that's a PR answer. he wants to be a golden knight and that's that's out there it's out there it's been out there they might not want him they might not be able to afford him yeah petra's coming back yeah they might not have the cap space to afford him so he goes i could see him going somewhere else just beggars can't be choosers sometimes just go to have 150 million dollar roster and what are you gonna do turn people away at the door you know up and play the game you know what are we gonna do
Starting point is 01:36:04 you know what they should do um they should he should go to a market where nobody cares yeah yeah you know that'd be better game 32 no one's in that dressing room bugging you asking you about your job that's so much better it's great when no one covers your league that's so it was funny you're seeing the comments and the reactions to that guys because somebody said well steve it's not fancy to agree it's not that we don't care it's that nobody's there to cover it i'm like yeah i saw that and i'm like are you joking just stop banging banging on the mic oh stop back uh why do you why do you think they don't cover because they just made the choice you know what uh the ducks we don't care no that's i think that's what it is they couldn't
Starting point is 01:36:49 they found out they couldn't make money off of covering the ducks there it is why why are you implying that no one cheers for them k their radco k their captain of the anaheim ducks who thinks no one cares i think it's a market with a lot of noise i think there's a lot la and the greater la area is i mean there's like two baseball teams three hockey teams that's right i call it no san jose's not that i saw one like two hockey teams two baseball teams two basketball teams you've got soccer going in there both men's and women's game like it there's a lot did you see the one that's like there's actually enormous pressure in anaheim almost threw my phone i think the the world is going to get the southern california world is going to get very mad at
Starting point is 01:37:35 you adam for counting all those sports teams amongst anaheim teams okay but anaheim is part of the greater los angeles area can we agree orange county is near los angeles i don't know you know what commute regularly from from the oc to la you can be sitting here in your toronto castle a much toronto castle judgments on what's going on in socal in terms of who belongs to what mark that's like oh yeah malibu and la are just completely unrelated places i don't i don't think the kings and ducks are necessarily competing what for for the for the fans well probably not for the fans because la has been around a lot longer like the lot the kings have that's all i'm saying but i mean i'm sure all ducks fans would have been kings fans had
Starting point is 01:38:24 there not been a Ducks introduction in the 90s. The Ducks exist. Yeah, but it's like... I don't think being like, ah, you know, there's a team in San Jose and Los Angeles and Anaheim.
Starting point is 01:38:37 How could they have fans? I think there's people out there. There's a lot of Senators fans who used to be Habs and Leafs fans. There are. They all exist. If you're over a certain age, I'm like, well,
Starting point is 01:38:47 what team did you cheer for before the Senators? You know how we talk about, oh, is Hamilton ever going to get an NHL team? i'm pretty sure the distance between la and anaheim is less than that you know what i mean what's the populations la large yeah i think large yeah i think it's i think it's a large group of people and they probably consider uh themselves a little split from that market
Starting point is 01:39:13 i don't know oh i think socal people need a way in i think they do consider that but it would be like you know like if hamilton finally got a hockey team which i agree with you again it should i'm looking forward to the anzi kopitar retirement tour where he gets on the mic teary-eyed and in anaheim and no yeah in anaheim because it's the same i got it am i right yeah and and he just goes you know for nearly two decades you didn't give a fuck and thank you for that it's one of my greatest memories was not having any pressure and no one caring it's one of my most treasured memories and then cory perry skates out and gives the double bird yeah yeah fuck you cory perry you're not paying me anymore yeah when the kings won those two cups uh what was noteworthy is no
Starting point is 01:39:57 one was there or loud right or happy because that's what it's all about playing in front of empty quiet barns and making millions of dollars the ducks had a pretty loud building when they won uh-huh tell that to radco yeah okay let's do the press conference whether life serves you an ace or an unexpected backhand the high protein yogurt oikos pro is there to feed your strength and help you turn every challenge into a smash oikos pro helps build strong muscles and support muscle recovery with high protein and contains no added sugar because true strength isn't about being able to take the hits it's about being able to bounce back. Starting point is 01:40:44 The Presser SDP. The Steve Dangle Press Conference. Quick presser today. Just one comment from Kimberly, who writes in, if you needed context for the concession prices in Ottawa, here's my receipt and personal submission to fat guy corner from msg tonight for bruins rangers and one of the sandwiches for comparison so kimberly tweeted us her receipt and a picture of the sandwich from carnegie deli section 105 in msg she got a two combo sandwich which was 42 american no she got two two two sandwiches two sandwich combo is it not that's not one sandwich two combo sandwich two combo sandwich i'm gonna go with it's two of the sandwich pictured that's right two of those
Starting point is 01:41:37 yes two combo sandwich okay one aquafina uh-huh see i'm doing it one 32 ounce soda which was a pepsi zero 32 that is an insane the aquafina the aquafina was 550 uh the 32 ounce soda was $8 total for the two sandwiches the water and the soda $70 and 41 cents i'm about i'm about ready to go back to public drinking fountains and just risk it like 550 for an aquafina or you know risk a disease from the public i might i might i know rip a 70 41 american is about a hundred dollars i do have to throw a flag on the play okay $9.99 of that is tip $10 tip that's nice yeah so it's $97 canadian if you include the tip without the tip it is 84 okay 84 still insane 84 for two sandwiches yeah two drinks fuck not everybody is as generous as kimberly who tips $10 way to go
Starting point is 01:42:44 kimberly yeah you rock him um so yeah let's say it's 80 what do you say 80 84 84 for this sandwich which is not two sandwiches a water and a drink that's crazy and it's not even regular season right there should be pre-season it does matter that i know it's the same sandwich pre-season regular season but it matters that you're paying 84 at a pre-season that's ridiculous yo man i i just like it's a fucking sandwich dude for a game that doesn't friggin count yeah you should be able to a pair you should be able to go for a hundred bucks yeah yeah that includes ticket and food i don't care how old i sound right now slowly like i'm i'm thinking about like the decisions i make based on like things like
Starting point is 01:43:30 this and it's like i i want to stay home i'll go cook my own food because as soon as i step outside it's a hundred dollars out of my pocket to just get something and these prices everywhere are just turning so ridiculous well i mean dude i'm gonna start brown bagging my uh my nights out like you know like what the fuck is the point in going to you're gonna show up to the keg with like a peanut butter and jelly i'll bring my own triple bogey no no i'm talking about no i'm talking about in the arena like why like why why would you buy in arena food they're they're begging you not to they're telling you you shouldn't blue jays games are fantastic because they allow you to bring in whatever you want yeah you can bring in a container of food and you can just have it there
Starting point is 01:44:11 as long as it's packaged which is still a relative because they want families there yeah freaking families but if you go to scotia bank like you can't bring in anything no you know because they want you to buy the 42 combo sandwich do you want do you want to know how out of touch everybody is at that level who the people these setting these prices first off i got this crazy dm last night from a guy his name is hamad was it like steve snapchat it was like no what did he send you his uh send me penis no not send me his penis okay good he said okay um he said i now live in bc my wife is australian so west coast is easier for her to visit family i have to pay for center ice due to blackouts fifty dollars a month to literally get a tsn feed that's blocked by the provider
Starting point is 01:44:52 channels i pay for fifty dollars um not just arenas the sport itself only wants your money if you can afford it now here's the kicker only telus is available in my area i cannot get rogers even though i am paying a crazy amount to watch my team i can't get it in 4k because only rogers customers are allowed to watch the game in 4k i'm very confused right now because aren't australians the most adept piraters in the entire world yes yeah you're the most you're the best at pirating everything and he's hamad said meanwhile when i watch the nfl it's everything is available on demand in 4k on the zone yeah they um want you so yeah the zone's pretty awesome the zone rocks it's amazing actually um i just wish they had more rights to things you know uh when they used
Starting point is 01:45:44 to have do they still have epl i don't i'm not a big soccer person i couldn't tell you uh michael rapinoe ceo of a company we all know and love live nation said to people this week that concert tickets are not nearly expensive enough. Fuck you. His quote was, it's like a badge of honor to spend 70 grand for a Knicks courtside. And they beat me up if we charge 800 for Beyonce.
Starting point is 01:46:09 These are the people that are setting the prices that you think are ridiculous because they do not know what it's like to work a normal job, to have normal bills, to have normal debts, and to have children. When you are making this kind of money,
Starting point is 01:46:25 it's impossible it is impossible for you to have both feet on the ground can you imagine trying to explain anything to a person like that you can't that's the most out of touch i can't believe he said that's the quiet part you said that out loud like we we've spent a long time uh scientifically trying to figure out if there's life on other planets there are it's just we live on two different planets yeah if that's how you genuinely think then there are two planets right here on earth and you're not on the one that most people are yeah yep what are you talking about yep what are you on about you babbling buffoon yeah it's crazy holy shit man i what can you do now well genuine question what can you that is the thing so here's here's what i
Starting point is 01:47:25 think the market inefficiency is you know we we kind of we we make a lot of our money some through subscription most through advertising the way to do it is to give it away for free like fortnight does and allow people to upgrade if they want to that's the market inefficiency again because everything all of the sudden about eight years ago was like you know what we're going to be premium you'll remember buying a video game and owning it yeah and that was crazy ubisoft ceo was saying that uh you have to get used to not buying it's it's all subscribed it's going to be all subscription based yeah i think what will happen is people will just rip it off yeah again you're begging us to steal and what's crazy about the um and we talked about this on a vip episode jesse i
Starting point is 01:48:06 think it was you that brought this up where five to ten years ago they almost eliminated piracy on online for creative content yeah now piracy has like the biggest comeback ever it's exploded because i don't know if you saw today disney plus has raised their price three dollars a month a month it's crazy after the week they've had that's crazy so anyway i just i look at this i'm like you know a hundred hundred bucks canadian for a sandwich and two drinks plus tip 90 sandwiches two sandwiches is insanity plus a fucking roast beef or corned beef sandwich what are we talking Plus tip because you pay the people making the sandwich garbage. It's your job to make sure they have a livable wage,
Starting point is 01:48:48 not the corporation that makes billions. Not James Dolan. Yeah, dude, it's just. And really, all it would take is for one person to do things slightly differently for this to change back. They just need one person to break ranks and go, you know what? And the only place that I know that they do that is Atlanta, right, Jesse? with the mercedes uh they have the mercedes stadium oh yeah we covered yeah yeah didn't we
Starting point is 01:49:12 call them live on the show no that was we were trying to see what it would cost to get a suite at wrestlemania that wasn't even close we're trying to get a suite i'm not gonna nail everything at a legion stadium in vegas no yeah the uh the falcons prices yeah we've covered that they they have like seven dollar everything you know everything is like under 10 bucks and it's awesome and there's they've proven that you can do that like it is it is corporate choice to gouge customers yes there is a way to run your business super profitably and get everybody in the door and happy by offering cheap prices wait who's your friend uh who dm'd you about uh oh all my games are blacked out or
Starting point is 01:49:55 whatever hamad hamad has he considered that hockey's just a highlight sport i mean a lot of people watch them steve yeah they just watch they watch the highlights yeah you know what sitting down for two and a half hours and enjoying the thrill of watching a game that you don't know the outcome of uh with your loved ones is the same as a six minute youtube video the next day the next when you already know the answer yeah it's the same don't you just want to throw a brick at random holy cow we can wrap here just to show you what could be your reality but the people in charge choose not to do this so at the mercedes-benz at mercedes-benz stadium in atlanta a chili cheese dog is five dollars a hot dog is two dollars
Starting point is 01:50:48 a smokehouse sausage vegan is five dollars a quinoa bowl is 10 bucks cheese nachos three pretzel two popcorn two candy 350 that's better than like the dollar stores here yeah I don't think you can get that at a shopper's drug mart for that. Like what? So this is what they're doing at Falcons football games, and they're fine. The souvenir cup soda, Jesse. Yeah, it's $4.
Starting point is 01:51:14 $4! And you know what? The team isn't going out of business. Yeah, I think they do pretty well. Didn't they just build a new stadium? Yeah, this is the most they can spend. Yeah, they're okay. Yeah, they're fine.
Starting point is 01:51:24 So if they're charging you $42 for the sandwich, it's only because of greed. New York or Ottawa. it costs them so little to make it oh yeah they're just choosing to charge you that because they can because they know you need to eat annoying annoying no that should have been the last word spoken on the show leave everyone with ominous silence no and the siren say something happy steve uh you gotta give something to get something what you just gotta give a lot of something the steve dangle podcast follow the guys on twitter at steve underscore dangle at
Starting point is 01:52:03 adam w y l d e and at jesse blake connection complete
