Starting point is 00:00:00 Panago Pizza presents S.D.P. The Steve Dangle Podcast with your hosts, Steve Dangle and Adam Wilde. Go. This is why I start the show, because you would start it with clearing your throat. Come on. Come on. I was expecting Jesse to... Get out there with it, boys. Come on. I'm embarrassed.
Starting point is 00:00:29 So this week, Steve Dangle, who will be playing in the Eric Lindros Celebrity Classic to support Easter Seals. I see he brought his water bottle in, by the way. Because he will hashtag now have played the game. And you know what? When you play the game, what do you need, Adam? Well, you need equipment to play the game. You need equipment! Thank you.
Starting point is 00:00:47 Steve Dangle went out this week and bought his first set of hockey equipment. You know what? That's a big step. And not cheap. Not cheap. Steve Dangle, how old are you? 30. You are living proof that you are never too old.
Starting point is 00:00:58 To learn something new. Adam, how much was your helmet? $300. Yesterday I bought shin pads, two elbow pads, which for some reason were sold separately, shoulder pads, three pucks, one of those orange balls, a water bottle, a cage, hockey pants, and new gloves. And the Buffalo Sabres. And the Buffalo Sabres.
Starting point is 00:01:22 Less than $400. Hey, well done. Wow. Well done. That's actually great. I'm impressed. How much of it was used? None.
Starting point is 00:01:29 Wow. That's awesome. Brand new Canadian tire. That's great. Oh, there you go. It's not a sponsored thing. It's not as good as Panago, though. No, that's true.
Starting point is 00:01:36 It doesn't taste as good. No. I should have bought my hockey equipment from them. Imagine how fresh it could have been. Funny thing about Steve's hockey equipment. I think I know this. Mark Zafard had to tell Steve that he was wearing it incorrectly. Yesterday, I posted a picture getting all cocky,
Starting point is 00:01:55 And he pointed out that my elbow pads may be on the wrong arms It's not like they're clearly labeled left and right And that I had a 50% chance of getting it right by accident Nope, just had to screw it up But it's okay No one pointed it out Because I posted it on the internet Oh, oh wait
Starting point is 00:02:16 Lots of people pointed it out Including an NHL player I grew up watching Fun, fun, fun Fun times I really want to play hockey now I'd suck so hard I just think that's the most Steep thing to ever happen
Starting point is 00:02:32 It is It is And you know what It's the most savvy thing To ever happen too Because only he would really notice That the elbow pads Would be on the wrong side
Starting point is 00:02:39 And by the way You taped your stick wrong Yeah You know He's so He is He is an equipment guy He loves it
Starting point is 00:02:46 I'll wait for game day And you taped your stick Like a goober Oh okay Well Sorry Sorry person Who I have hockey cards of
Starting point is 00:02:54 A person I have hockey cards of Thinks I suck You know who else Is having a bad day I don't think he thinks You suck He thinks I suck Yeah he does
Starting point is 00:03:01 He actually called Jesse and I And told us how much He thinks you suck I forgot about that Yeah we had a conference call About And he had like a Google invite And then said
Starting point is 00:03:09 Why Steve sucks And then he invited us James Reimer also called No Mr. Aqualini also called Oh wow That's okay That means I'm good
Starting point is 00:03:19 I feel like a confidence boost Cody It's a CC call from the IR. Yo, the Sens, and there was another team, too. Oh, we'll get to it. Oh, yeah, there. Have seven people on the IR. Anyway, yes.
Starting point is 00:03:32 You know who else is having a bad day on the internet? Who? Jim Matheson. Oh, Adam. Jim Matheson. I think he's... NHL by Matty. I don't know, Adam.
Starting point is 00:03:40 You ever seen a pig in shit? They seem perfectly content. He's... This is his thing. Every couple of weeks, he's like, Toronto thing. And we all go, what? And we fight. And he just reels him in.
Starting point is 00:03:58 He does what Walker tries to do from the Vancouver angle, but from the Edmonton angle, and he means it. Yeah, I think he does mean it. Like, Walker, I'm like, Walker's just trying to piss the people off, which, you know, I respect that. I respect that. But, like, with Madison, I'm like. You don't like the pig and shit analogy.
Starting point is 00:04:14 You never get the pig and shit impression with Andrew Walker? I think that's just a little old. So here's the NHL PR account. By the way, who follows the PR underscore NHL account? I do. Do you? Yeah. Yeah, but you have to.
Starting point is 00:04:29 No, but it's valuable to all you guys. Is it? I guess it's not in the news. It's NHL news. Listen, you are a professional social media person. Adam and I are just regular Joes. We're just regular consumers. I'm just a regular unemployed Joe.
Starting point is 00:04:45 We're two guys who don't have a hockey podcast at all and don't need to be up on hockey information, than I expected you both to be. How else could I possibly get it if not for the NHL PR Twitter account? I think you need to be on top of the news and if they're breaking it, why aren't you there?
Starting point is 00:05:00 I'm pretty sure they tattooed it on Jesse Fuchs and Danielle Michaud's foreheads today where Austin Matthews and Morgan Rielly stand. I'm pretty sure Sportsnet covered it. However... And... In case... No kidding.
Starting point is 00:05:14 Because that's how it felt to Jim Matheson. Also, Adam, You dropping the Sportsnet Central Anchors names By first name and last name Proves that you are truly unemployed And you have lots of time to watch TV I can watch the sports highlights Sometimes three times in a row
Starting point is 00:05:28 That's amazing And sometimes two Do you ever sit there and go Uh-oh, they're starting over No I've finished the loop Why would that be an uh-oh? Oh, I've seen all of this already
Starting point is 00:05:43 There used to be a time When I would watch the highlights And I would have to pee or something And then I'd wait and had to watch and if I peed and I missed it then I'd be like
Starting point is 00:05:51 okay what time is it alright I'm gonna go back I know they do the Leafs highlights at say 7 past or whatever and I'll come back next hour
Starting point is 00:05:57 I too was 13 once but now you can rewind anything but I'll still watch on the loop because like really at 10 o'clock in the morning
Starting point is 00:06:05 there's nothing else on and you might say Adam why don't you get out and do something productive to which I say no do you just say
Starting point is 00:06:11 at 10 in the morning there's nothing else on what else is on your mom's show no she's on at 11 isn't she I'm pretty sure she's on a 10. Isn't she?
Starting point is 00:06:19 You asked the question. Well, I don't think that show's meant for me. It is. There's all kinds of prizes. You should go. You've got nothing to do. You should just go in the audience one day. You should apply for tickets normally, not even ask for it, and just go.
Starting point is 00:06:34 Just don't say anything. So in response to the Jim Matheson- Hold on. What's the wacky game show with Wayne Brady, I think? Oh. It's on City. It used to be on After Us on Breakfast Television. The Jag of game shows
Starting point is 00:06:48 where you're like, who the hell watches that but it's been on forever? In costumes? Yes. Wayne Brady game show. Not Let's Make a Deal. Let's Make a Deal!
Starting point is 00:06:56 Is it Let's Make a Deal? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Why aren't you watching Let's Make a Deal? That's all I wanted to say. Do you ever watch that show and wonder if Wayne Brady hurts inside doing that?
Starting point is 00:07:05 I think he hurts so financially good. He's so, he's laughing at the bank. You're right. But he's so talented and he must be thinking like, whose line is it anyway?
Starting point is 00:07:15 Classic show. somehow gets canceled now i'm doing let's make a deal with someone with a snake balloon on her head he probably why minimum seven digits to do it yeah he looks the same as he did 20 years ago wayne brady has an amazing life like when we watch he's doing your house and watch the wayne brady sketch with uh dave chappelle and he looks exactly the same now that was what 20 years ago It was like 2003. That's crazy. And he looks the same.
Starting point is 00:07:48 So Jim Matheson, in response to a PR underscore NHL, if you don't already follow them, tweet. Jim Matheson, who writes for? Edmonton Journal? He writes for Edmonton. Okay. The city. His bio is have covered. By the way, can you start a sentence with have?
Starting point is 00:08:05 Have covered the Edmonton Oilers since 1972. For a character limit. Have covered. He's savvy. He's social media savvy. If you're doing it on a question, grammatically, it makes sense. What about covering the Oilers since 72? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:08:22 Anyway, at age 21, Austin Matthews is the youngest player ever to achieve this feat, besting the previous mark set by Wayne Gretzky at age 22. And that feat was being the 12th player in NHL history to record multiple points in each of his team's first five games. The last time it happened, Patrick Marleau was the one who did so alongside Joe Thornton. but Austin is the youngest player ever. Now. Wow. Incredible.
Starting point is 00:08:47 That's, man, considering the 80s existed, like, that's pretty incredible. That's pretty cool. Now, Jim Matheson tweets. Well, that's pretty cool. So saith us biased Toronto folk. But what did totally level-headed, unbiased, bipartisan, whatever Jim Matheson say?
Starting point is 00:09:09 Can we just put a halt on the hysteria surrounding Matthews and Riley here? Besting Gretzky And Orr feats Because Morgan Riley Also beat a Bobby Orr record Which was so Like I don't even know
Starting point is 00:09:21 If you could call it a record It's just like Here's a five game stretch Where Bobby Orr did really well And Morgan Riley did better It's a very specific Very specific No
Starting point is 00:09:28 It's most points By a defenseman In the first five games Of a season Like who's Who's tracking that But The NHL PR
Starting point is 00:09:36 Twitter account Yeah And the record goes Morgan Riley Then Bobby Orr Paul Coffey Borya Salming Like it's a great list
Starting point is 00:09:46 I think it's worth noting It's a pretty good list But not good enough For Jim Matheson Can we just Can we just He gave us a can we just Can
Starting point is 00:09:57 We Just But Well then I didn't even finish the tweet Oh Great I want to hear the rest of it Can we just put I bet you do
Starting point is 00:10:06 A halt on the hysteria Surrounding Matthews and Riley here Besting Gretzky and Orfeets we've played two weeks of the schedule folks if Matthews gets 216 points in a season call me if Riley gets 47 goals in a season call me well Jim put that ringer on because we're gonna be calling you by February at this rate Austin Matthews is never gonna slow down ever the stats community confirms it jim adam can you start that tweet again can we just can we just oh put a halt on the hysteria
Starting point is 00:10:45 surrounding matthews and riley hysterical over austin matthews we can't get enough of them we can't get enough of adam i want you to do me a favor and say something for me okay sure Say Austin Matthews Austin Matthews Oh my god Hysteria Because we just can't get enough He's incredible
Starting point is 00:11:11 Nine goals Are you shitting me For everyone listening And three assists That's crazy He took off his shirt And threw both shoes at Adam His undershirt's a little small
Starting point is 00:11:24 It's a little Yeah I know My white shirt's shrunk And this is what I wear under my jersey for the LFRs that I just never changed after this morning. So Salt Bae entered the room. Yeah, seriously. You are Salt Bae.
Starting point is 00:11:38 So true. She looks exactly like Salt Bae. Oh, my God. Are you saying I fill out a white V-neck nicely? Thank you, Jesse. That's what I said. Thank you, Jesse. That's the second nicest thing you can say to me
Starting point is 00:11:50 other than Austin Matthews. I didn't want to throw it at you because you have a hot drink. Jesse, I forgot to grab a third set of headphones and we do need to check out sound. Okay. Or you can just say Austin Matthews for the next hour and a half.
Starting point is 00:12:07 Our Toronto listenership will be through the roof. So we just need one more set of headphones. In the other room. Are they in the other room? Yeah. Okay, so Jesse's going to get the other set of headphones. Now, yeah. Oh, right at the moment he opened the soundproof door
Starting point is 00:12:22 and went, yeah. Jim Matheson also wrote Oh there's more Actually he wrote this Nine hours ago The other tweet was Three hours ago Typical Toronto bias
Starting point is 00:12:34 That anybody would think Matthews is as good As McDavid Did I miss the two Scoring titles That Matthews has won Well Jim You'll have to forgive us
Starting point is 00:12:43 Do we have sound too Cool thanks man You'll have to forgive us Because We're just a little caught up In the hysteria of the Western Matthews because he scored nine goals
Starting point is 00:12:58 and we can't believe it. People are getting out of their cars in the middle of the streets and running around butt naked bathing in the water from fire hydrants that they ran over
Starting point is 00:13:14 because they can't come to grips with the reality that they're living in. I'm going to stop shouting. Well, I wonder, I wondered if Maybe Jim Matheson Had a point
Starting point is 00:13:25 You know I wondered if Jim Matheson had a point Maybe he did And I'm wondering if If Our media is losing it And I'm calling out
Starting point is 00:13:35 A couple of our Sportsnet fellows here Oh well I know one I'm going to start With Nick Kiprios Hell yeah Is Nick Kiprios losing it No
Starting point is 00:13:45 Or is he just playing us No Why do you think He's losing it He's wrong I don't know all right so this is ready this is oh no that's austin matthews on your screen it is austin matthews i can't for some reason i can't hear it jesse hold on good to go so first off i i'm not
Starting point is 00:14:07 really sure why jim matheson tweeted that other thing because i'm not sure that anybody in toronto is arguing that matthews is better than mcdavid uh i think there was brief conversation i don't remember who started writing it was it bruce harther i don't remember but it was basically is matthews entering the conversation of best player in the world which yeah a conversation is a lot different than he's better than involves more than one player yeah you can put mckinnon and crosby and mcdavid in there too and maybe hall i mean he's the reigning mvp you know there's a conversation of players maybe like a dozen yeah or so and mcdavid is at the top of the dozen And McDavid is still the best
Starting point is 00:14:49 Because the conversation Always comes back to Yes but is Are you better than McDavid Which by the way The answer is always no So it was It was Bruce Archer
Starting point is 00:14:57 Arthur And it was in the Toronto Star And the title was Austin Matthews Has forced himself Into the greatest player In the world conversation
Starting point is 00:15:04 And he's not wrong Yeah everyone's had that debate That's fine On Thursday We did it on Tim and Sid And yeah The answer is no Yeah he's in the conversation
Starting point is 00:15:13 But he's not better No Of course But like what Like I'm trying to Imagine us, like, three weeks ago. Like, is Austin Matthews better than McDavid? We'd all be like, no, no.
Starting point is 00:15:22 Even now. What would he have to do in his first five games? He'd be like, oh, score, like, at least nine goals. And then he did. And we're like, well, now we got to have the conversation. If he gets two more, he beats the Gretzky record for fastest to 10 or something. Or fastest to 11 or something like that. Wow.
Starting point is 00:15:40 Which, by the way, fastest to 11. What a weak stat. I know. That's very baseball. We're cherry picking numbers. Okay. Now, most three and two count strikeouts with a curveball. That would be a baseball stat.
Starting point is 00:15:52 Set by Puxatani Phil back in 1937. So Jim Matheson might have a point. And I think, except for that, I don't think that anybody in Toronto is actually arguing that Matthews is better than McDavid. Like, no one's making that argument. No one cares. Because what Matthews is, is on a better team than McDavid. And that's really what matters. Well.
Starting point is 00:16:12 um so but i do feel like our good friend nick kiprios friend of the show nick kiprios could be losing his mind here so for some reason on the fan they had they brought up the possibility of austin matthews being offer sheeted by the arizona coyotes and then accepting it here we go if he wants to be a leaf okay and i will tell you this time last year islander fans were saying the same thing about tabaris if he wants to be an islander he can be an islander well guess what he wanted to be a leaf and i'm not here to tell you that matthews does or doesn't want to be one but the leaves were smart enough to play the hometown card come home come home okay remember your pajama picture come home now austin matthews
Starting point is 00:17:06 isn't Canadian. He doesn't know the culture here until he got here. And I'm not saying that he doesn't love it. I'm not saying that he's not happy here. But he was born and raised in Arizona. I look at the Coyotes right now, and there's nobody that wants to get in bed with the owner as a partner. There's no one that wants to build a building with him.
Starting point is 00:17:29 if he was able to get Austin Matthews and play the same card the Leafs played with Tavares and said listen come home you were born and raised here
Starting point is 00:17:45 you grew up a Coyotes fan a Shane Doan fan come here and build your legacy in your hometown here in your home state and you better listen austin matthews saves franchises and he builds buildings he is crosby in pittsburgh okay he's lindros when he showed up in philly and gave them a brand new
Starting point is 00:18:14 building that's the type of guy he is and he would be worth 20 of the cap moving forward to save that franchise i'm not saying it's gonna happen and the probability isn't in favor of that happening but it's out there yeah it's not nothing it's out there it's not nothing i think the leaks i think the leaks would be crazy to think that that's not a possibility as remote as it sounds it's still out there still out there well you know as we've said on the show before hold on Don't take your headphones off. Oh, baby. We got more.
Starting point is 00:18:51 Well, can I talk about that before we move on? Sure, because we've got another member of the media who might be losing their mind. As we've discussed before. As he says, don't take off your headphones. All, well, I'm talking. I know I'm not listening. All things that are possible. Are possible.
Starting point is 00:19:08 Are possible. Austin Matthews might indeed sign an offer sheet with the Arizona Coyotes and flee the city of toronto and go play for the arizona coyotes scott moore might walk through that door in the next 30 seconds kicking ron and don off the air and just being like guess what folks seven minutes of sdp time every saturday night first intermission they'd be crazy to think that That's not a possibility. Jim Matheson might swing through that window right now on a Batman-like sort of pulley contraption,
Starting point is 00:19:52 kick the door, just the window out, stand in front of me, Gangs of New York style, and go, let's dance, pretty boy. And we just duke it out like Peter Griffin and the chicken for the next half hour. All things that are possible are possible.
Starting point is 00:20:09 But Forgive me for being A little bit skeptical At the theory That the poorest team In the league Is going to steal The best player
Starting point is 00:20:22 From the richest team In the league That a team that Hasn't made the playoffs In how long? Five, six years Is about to steal A player who has
Starting point is 00:20:32 Nine goals in five games And seems perfectly content Thank you very much Have they made the playoffs Since Wayne Gretzky was coach? yes yeah yeah 2012 they made it to the conference final yeah oh yes mike smith yeah um okay so now i now i ask you and by the way this is not an insult to to nick kiprios not insult to brian burke but if they were in front of me right now with these takes i would have to
Starting point is 00:20:56 ask them if they were losing their minds and i want to just before i before we talk a little bit more about both of these takes i want you to hear brian burke's take earlier and this is where I think Jim Matheson may really have a point. What? By the way, he's talking about Morgan Rielly, okay?
Starting point is 00:21:13 You watch him play right now and he's almost on autopilot. He's in his own right now because he's doing things he reminds me right now. I'm not comparing him to this player. He reminds me of Nick Lidstrom
Starting point is 00:21:25 when Nick Lidstrom was in his prime. Because what he's doing is... I don't know where he's specified. No, he doesn't just remind me of Nick Lindstrom. He reminds me of the best version of Nick Lindstrom. Okay, let's continue.
Starting point is 00:21:39 There's a minute to go. He's got the pocket, heads up the whole time. It's almost like he's doing this computer-generated thing to see the whole thing and make the right choice with confidence and speed. What I thought first when I watched him play, so he only played
Starting point is 00:21:55 a few games out here. He hurt his knee. But his skating leaps out at you right away. Can you pause it? folks did i ever tell you that i drafted morgan riley fifth goddamn overall despite the fact that he only played 17 games in the whl i'm a freaking genius why'd you fire me you know i'm a genius well the guy that he actually gives credit to in the rest of this clip and we don't actually need to play the rest of the clip um is dave morrison who is still with the leafs in the head of scouting it was dave morrison that was like must draft this guy you must you must you must and he did
Starting point is 00:22:27 great listen to his guy um now for us so here's the thing last year last year Nick Kiprios went on Hockey Central at noon and said the Leafs should look at trading Mitch Marner for Noah Hannaford because Mitch Marner at the time was on the fourth line so what you have to do in these moments is realize that they are in the moment and I love yeah I love Nick and I love Brian I've never met brian but i've heard nothing but great things about brian in person but i have to tell you these takes are hot so maybe jim matheson has a bit of a you know maybe he's right i'm coming around maybe my friend screw toronto and the entire province i'm with you like nick kiprios also said when the washington capitals were in the second round of the playoffs
Starting point is 00:23:20 That if they win The Stanley Cup Final They may fire Their head coach And everybody said You're a crazy man Nick Kipriels Why would they fire
Starting point is 00:23:28 Their coach If they won They didn't end up Firing him though He walked Same thing Same thing By firing
Starting point is 00:23:33 He meant let go They wouldn't come To agreement And it happened So I'm just saying If he says something Ridiculous But we knew
Starting point is 00:23:42 Last year Give him some credit I do Because he's a very Knowledgeable man He said Noah Hannafin Would get traded To the Leafs
Starting point is 00:23:48 And he got traded To with him To Canada To Canada So he was right there Yeah They have a Canada flag On their
Starting point is 00:23:55 On their shoulders But it's not like He wasn't wrong About Noah Hannafin Being on the market Right Which we knew And we also knew
Starting point is 00:24:03 Barry Trotz Going into the playoffs Would quote Lose his job Because I went on a rant About it Going into the playoffs We knew that
Starting point is 00:24:10 I said It's absurd That Barry Trotz Would get fired For losing in the second round That's insane Then instead He won the Stanley Cup
Starting point is 00:24:16 And couldn't sign a contract And decided to go To the Islanders Who Are A team Exist And are paying him
Starting point is 00:24:25 Four million dollars a year That's very good Yeah You guys heard that Cal Clutterbuck And Matt Martin And the other guy On their line
Starting point is 00:24:32 Casey Zizekas They all scored a goal The other night Hell yeah Best fourth line in hockey Back baby Gritty goals baby Oh the mascot
Starting point is 00:24:39 Went to the wrong team Everybody Gritty Gritty should be Centering that line Move over Casey So true He should be right in there
Starting point is 00:24:46 listen now it's funny that you brought up the Marner for Hannifin thing or was that you? Marnifin Marnifin?
Starting point is 00:24:55 because we're doing sort of the same thing now with Nylander well they're scoring goals without him
Starting point is 00:25:03 which means trash garbage let's get rid of him for any old second pair defenseman
Starting point is 00:25:12 because it's worked so well In other situations Look at how well It went for the Oilers Look at how well It went Peter Chiarelli
Starting point is 00:25:22 We should follow That guy's lead Absolutely He's got a cup Well and the thing is By the way For everybody that Tweeted me saying
Starting point is 00:25:29 That William Nylander Isn't holding out Because I said He was holding out William Nylander Is holding out There is no discussion He is holding out
Starting point is 00:25:41 The way Did you see The rosters for the first five games? Yeah, so here he wasn't there. The argument is that saying holdout makes William Nylander look like a bad person. And I said, they're like,
Starting point is 00:25:52 That's your fault. If that's how you interpret it, that's your fault. A holdout is Alexi Yashin. A holdout is Le'Veon Bell. People who have contracts and are holding out. Well, no, a holdout can be more than one thing. And this type of holding out is a negotiation tactic, which is we're not going to play
Starting point is 00:26:10 until you give us your money. And the Leafs are going, Cool You can hold out For more money I guess it'd be better Go ahead and hold out For more money
Starting point is 00:26:17 It'd be better But you're not gonna get it Contract dispute Perhaps Oh I don't give it It's a hold out He's holding out Have they offered him a contract
Starting point is 00:26:24 Yes Maybe the Leafs are holding out Is he holding out for more money Sure the Leafs are holding out too They're both holding out For their side The Leafs are holding out On losing right now
Starting point is 00:26:32 The Twitter trolls argument Against you Were that You can't use the term Hold out If he doesn't have a contract You can if he's got an offer and he does yeah because i assume he does the Leafs have offered him a contract we know that
Starting point is 00:26:46 so the term holdout he's holding out for more money yeah i'm gonna hold out for more money well i don't understand and by the way listen this is business guys there is no bad or good here this is i want my money and this is this is any employment agreement when i have a contract negotiation myself usually the company that i'm working for sends me a contract and i go hmm interesting how about more and then they go well we see that that's an interesting figure you sent us back how about less how about less than that that's normally how it goes so i held out for more money i counter offered and then if we come to an impasse which right now the leafs and kneelanders can't have i'm holding out for more money they're holding out for their position
Starting point is 00:27:25 hold out is not a negative it's just a thing it doesn't have to be political it doesn't have to have a sociological thing associated with it william kneelander is not a bad person because he wants to make more money it's just a thing it just is if the leafs keep up their current pace and go 15 and 2 and it's who they lose the second one to middle of november is there a reason to trade william neil and we'll come to that bridge when we get there well here's here's what i wanted to say off off the top of the show and i did that thing again where i lowered my chair um Dad do that Every show
Starting point is 00:28:03 Here's my point But from a smaller angle Yeah Okay That's impressive All of a sudden What has just happened My point is gonna be so big
Starting point is 00:28:12 I don't even need to be As high as you You go way up now Alright now listen Talking down to us now Steve Your point's small Alright
Starting point is 00:28:18 Listen Um I feel like It was either the last show Or the second last show Where we talked about Kneelander And Adam was really good
Starting point is 00:28:27 And you were really good And I just Clearly didn't give a shit Because I feel like we've covered any and all angles of William Nylander, so I'm going to say what I have to say and be done with it until there's news to discuss on that front. Because I just don't care anymore. I'm tired of talking about maybes with him. You know what would have been hilarious is if Steve talked about it with us last episode when we were talking about it. But no, I won't watch Game of Thrones.
Starting point is 00:28:56 No. I will not watch Game of Thrones. So you're saying it would have been good if Steve Dangle entered a conversation on the Steve Dangle podcast. I'm getting ganged up on, so I'm just going to lower myself there. Okay. What a strange thing to happen. Would you say that the entire idea of the Steve Dangle podcast is to have a conversation? No!
Starting point is 00:29:15 That would be ridiculous. Then you shut your freaking face then, Adam. How about you do that? How about you do a little bit of that? Listen, everybody. Laughing at the Leafs. The old laughs. loafing around
Starting point is 00:29:29 1967. Brr! Brr! Talking about the Leafs barfing like you do. That you don't have William Nylander.
Starting point is 00:29:43 Guess you shouldn't decide Tavares. That was my favorite take. Shouldn't decide Tavares. They blew it up. First of all, they wrecked it. He's scoring two points
Starting point is 00:29:52 a game. Already your arguments Is poor He had four assists last night He had four assists In a game where he didn't even look that good Sit down and shut up forever
Starting point is 00:30:08 Do you understand How little permission you have to speak Also William Nylander I'm going to throw this out there This is why you hire me NHL expert That's why I said it in the thing
Starting point is 00:30:21 On the Fan 590 Absolutely William Nylander exists it's crazy he exists so right now he exists somewhere in sweden there's a guy named william nylander who's out there playing hockey and he's a great hockey player have you seen the videos on instagram of him doing skating work it's insane he's very good his legs move very quickly i was surprised it was him and what is he wearing in said videos leafs gear leafs gear ah interesting i wonder about that he's getting close he's getting i mean all his teammates are
Starting point is 00:30:54 out there on the ice looking impressive he figured i gotta get in on this the leafs have william kneelander they can re-sign william kneelander and if they re-sign william kneelander they will have william kneelander well steve if they you know keep wasting their precious time someone's gonna offer sheet William Nylander what no really well gosh that means the other team steals them for free well no actually they have to pay like an exorbitant penalty of draft picks well if it's up to them eight million it's one two and three it's a yeah crazy amount oh oh so wait the Leafs get things so on top of them being great already they get things in exchange for a player they were not using oh okay well that sounds good between six and eight point one million it's a first
Starting point is 00:31:52 second and third between eight and ten million it's uh two firsts a second and a third you have to think that it'd be over eight because over eight otherwise just match yeah otherwise you Would match Then it's Two firsts A second And a third Which
Starting point is 00:32:07 Should be Your own And yeah First off You have to Have those Picks Second
Starting point is 00:32:10 You have to Have the Space And there Are I think It was Jeff
Starting point is 00:32:13 Fayette That actually Broke it Down And all Of them Are lottery Teams
Starting point is 00:32:19 Oh well Great So we'll Take your Pick The Ottawa Senators Do it
Starting point is 00:32:27 I know Who's one Of the teams That could Offer William D. Landry
Starting point is 00:32:30 You know Who's one Of the teams That could Offer William Nylander with the space they have? Hit me. Austin Matthews' future team?
Starting point is 00:32:40 Well, that's one of them. Is it? But if the Leafs were on the outside looking in, the Leafs have like $12 million in cap space. Well, Adam, you mentioned something in there that is also a possibility. Matching! A team can come in and be like,
Starting point is 00:32:55 one William Nylander, please. And the Leafs could be like, actually, that sounds good. I'll have one too. there's only one oh well I guess we get him well and here's the other thing too William Nylander is not stupid he wants to be in a big market he wants to be in Toronto that is that is clear he wants to be here and part of the issue that's holding up the contract is that if he signs for six and a half he's concerned because he can't have a no trade
Starting point is 00:33:18 clause in his deal right now he's concerned that he gets traded well I mean if some butts man there's not much like you can't that's like saying you know I don't I don't want to buy this car because i might run out of gas in three years like i you can't so he wants an untradeable contract well and they can't do that so so if you if you're looking for a no trade clause in terms of how much money you're gonna make the only places to make it are the places that you william kneelander do not want to go right now well adam if he's not going to sign a deal then they will have no other option than to trade him oh no they get nothing no well no they get the return of the trade which would be pretty good could be a top four defenseman top forward prospect and a high
Starting point is 00:34:02 pick it could be a bunch of defensemen it could be a couple forwards and a defenseman could be a ocean of picks it can be an ocean of all kinds of things and it just adds to the team that is already four and one so for everyone freaking out acting like he's gonna leave they'll never see him again and they're just going to be in the hole one William Nylander it does not work that way he also has to say ah this deal looks good let me sign it he has to sign it and like remember Shea Weber put pen to paper with the flyers didn't someone come out and say that teams had made him an offer and he just didn't take it who I could have swore someone said someone suggested I don't think it was ever it hasn't happened it's been suggested yeah so listen everyone the only
Starting point is 00:34:53 way the Leafs take an L on this is one, if they make a terrible trade. I mean, that's still an option. And two, if William Nylander just decides, not an NHL player anymore. I just choose never to play here again. And he would have to wait until 2023 to come back.
Starting point is 00:35:09 And that's really all... Because the Leafs own his rights till then. I gotta say about it, like I get that you're looking at this offense and going, well, do they really need William Nylander? And the answer is no, which is why it would be so dope to add him to it i have to tell you though the bottom six has looked kind of dry so i kind of feel like absolutely i kind of feel like having him and then being able to
Starting point is 00:35:30 take a guy like kapanen and put him with kadri man marlo matthews kneelander hyman taveras marner kapanen uh i'm gonna go with jansen kadri kapanen yeah it'd be disgusting and then whoever Ennis Lindholm Brown That's great Stupid Stupid
Starting point is 00:35:57 You have two Former 20 goal scorers On your fourth line Yeah It's alright It's alright It's alright
Starting point is 00:36:06 And a future one In Per Lindholm I've actually really liked him I have too Like why not I think the NHL Is a style league We always talk about
Starting point is 00:36:16 Like You know The teams you can't identify what they do as being weaker teams. No one's confused about what the Leafs do. They score goals. Nylander scores goals. What's interesting about the Leafs is it's been those top four guys.
Starting point is 00:36:30 It's Marner, Matthews, Tavares, Riley that have really, you know, carried the Leafs through the first part of the season. And that's what your stars are supposed to do. They are supposed to carry you. But then outside of that, it's been literally no one. It's been literally no one. And that can be a problem over a long stretch because eventually your 50% shooting percentage regresses.
Starting point is 00:36:48 Now, one guy we need to talk about is Jake Gardner. I've been quiet on Jake Gardner this season, personally, but every game I see him, every game, I'm blown away by how not Jake Gardner he's looked. Mediocre. That's Jake Gardner's stat. The three of us have as many shots on goal as Jake Gardner, meaning he has zero shots on goal through five games.
Starting point is 00:37:12 You would never know it's a contract here. Isn't that crazy? It's a contract here. I saw his – now, this could all change. Five games from now, we could have a completely different conversation about Jake Gardner because that's the thing with Jake. He wakes up, and then he's scary. But when we talk about him in these moments, this is where the analytics –
Starting point is 00:37:29 Jake Gardner is one of those polarizing guys, right? You've got the analytics community. You've got the eye test community. And the eye test community goes, yeah, but what about these five-game stretches? And the analytics community goes, yeah, but what about all these stretches that even out the five-game stretches? Yeah, what about these past two seasons where he's been absolutely incredible offensively? And in their own way, they're both sort of right.
Starting point is 00:37:50 I'm going to give the hand to the analytics community there because long term, that's sort of what you're looking for. You're looking for a guy who most of the time is pretty damn good, and I would say that describes Jake Gardner. However, when he's bad, he's brutal, and he's been brutal. And I saw a stat today that said he only had, apparently, only has five giveaways this year, or five turnovers. Giveaways are the shittiest stat, by the way. I think it's even worse than plus minus. It's so bad. I saw one, I can't remember, it was like the Leafs' crazy game where Montreal just kicked their teeth in.
Starting point is 00:38:26 Somehow the Leafs won. And the Leafs' forwards combined for three giveaways. That can't be right. Get out of my face. No, that's not right. Giveaways, I agree with you that they're phony stats because they're an eye stat. They're not, they're like, okay, the guy in the arena who's in charge of that has to judge that stat. They're not an actual, hey, he got an assist, he got a shot, he got a goal.
Starting point is 00:38:47 It's, hey, this guy determined that, hey, this wasn't really a giveaway, I won't give him one there. It's the same thing with assists in basketball. Like, you can have a phony assist in basketball where it's like a rebound happened and then you pass the ball And then four minutes later The guy Or thirty Ten seconds later The guy shoots the ball
Starting point is 00:39:03 But you didn't directly Lead to the basket If you have a giveaway You could give up the puck And then it leads to a goal But the guy could just be like Hey that didn't directly Lead to the goal
Starting point is 00:39:11 Even though it was Kind of your fault Yeah Tavares had an assist Tavares had an assist Last night where he was The fourth last person To touch the puck
Starting point is 00:39:18 Yeah He threw it into the corner Same thing Nicholas Cronwell Directed the puck Towards Zach Hyman Hyman passes it to Marner And it's a goal
Starting point is 00:39:26 Tavares doesn't deserve An assist on that a red wing was the third what are you doing it every time berkshire tells me about like the crazy stuff that gets tracked like he works for sport logic and they know everything oh we track this we track that we track that oh well what about this yeah we track that my first question is always well who judges that who judges what this is or that is or that is whenever i see like a Clean zone exit Or
Starting point is 00:39:57 Clean zone entry All that stuff I'm like Well who's the judge of that What does clean mean What if you got in clean And then tripped Yeah
Starting point is 00:40:06 Which happens What if Yeah but at least you got in That's the idea Is that you got in Faceoff wins No one gets a half faceoff win Do they
Starting point is 00:40:14 And by the way How do you judge faceoff wins Is it possession Or is it the first one Because sometimes The two set him in lock up And the winger comes in And gets it
Starting point is 00:40:24 The centerman wins That faceoff Yeah Which is dumb Like you know what I mean Like okay And then there's this other one Where some centerman
Starting point is 00:40:32 Will win a faceoff Just by shoveling The puck forward In fact Mario Lemieux Once scored a goal From the faceoff dot Doing just that
Starting point is 00:40:38 Does that count as a loss If you don't immediately Pick up possession Because you're giving If you pass it forward You're giving the possession To the other team Right
Starting point is 00:40:45 But you directed it But you won the faceoff If it ends up on Your team's sick Yeah see this is what I don't understand So in my point In bringing up
Starting point is 00:40:53 The Jake Gardner giveaway He only has three giveaways? We went down a rabbit hole. Yeah, we did. And that's kind of... Is that, no, he doesn't. He's got way more. And I've seen him give up more than that.
Starting point is 00:41:04 They give giveaways so rarely, though, that five through five games makes me go, whoa, that's actually kind of a lot. Well, the fact that they only gave the Leafs three that one game, I'm like, what are you talking about? That's a lie. So my point in this is, through the first five games,
Starting point is 00:41:19 Jake Gardner has not been good enough. And he's got to turn it around. it's got it's got to change and then and for a few guys and I have to say I thought I think Travis Dermott's been awesome but he's he's getting limited time I don't know what Babcock had against him he was I mean he was the last guy back on two of the goals and I don't know how how what does it say in the coach's handbook how to play a four-on-one because I watched what he did and I'm like he looked bad but I don't know how he could have looked good other than maybe, I don't know, got on his knees and went in the
Starting point is 00:41:54 butterfly himself in the net. But I don't know what he could have done. Yep. Nikita Zaitsev, while apparently his possession numbers haven't been great, neither have Jake Gardner's. Neither have Austin Matthews. No, he's got bad possession numbers, doesn't he? It's weird.
Starting point is 00:42:10 And who gives a shit? Yeah, I was about to say, it doesn't really matter when the puck's on your stick for eight seconds and you shoot it and you score. So this is my question. From what I am seeing, Jake Gardner's underperforming. Nikita Zaitsev is overperforming. Now, Jake Gardner can way overperform where he's at,
Starting point is 00:42:26 and I expect Nikita Zaitsev to be about where he is. He's mobile enough. He makes passes enough. Is he ever going to be worth his contract? No. So if we... Maybe. Maybe.
Starting point is 00:42:36 Four million, I... It's not that bad. Four million in a couple of years is going to be pretty par for the course, especially for the role that they make him play. I just want Zaitsev so badly to turn into the player that Babcock thinks he is. Plays him like. He plays him like, man, he played over 24 minutes against Detroit. That's so dumb.
Starting point is 00:42:56 It's so unnecessary. I want to have someone believe in me the way Mike Babcock believes in Ron Hainsey. Man, hey, that's two goal scorer Ron Hainsey to you. That was the most ridiculous. I have never, ever, ever in my life seen an empty net goal like that. Okay. Oh, my God. What was his name?
Starting point is 00:43:12 Mickey Redmond, I think, was the color commentator for the Detroit broadcast. You've got to watch the highlight pack that Sportsnet made. It's on Sportsnet's YouTube channel. They use the Detroit feed. What does he say? It's so funny. Every Leafs goal. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:43:29 Are you kidding? Oh, my God. When the Hainsey one goes in, the indignation. How dare that puck roll into that net like it owns the place. Oh, it's so funny. It's like because he just can't believe it. and poor Mickey, he's going to have a rough season. Detroit's going to have a lot of games like they did against the Leafs.
Starting point is 00:43:51 I paid Detroit what I thought was a compliment, although it doesn't come out that way. They remind me a little bit of the Leafs the year they finished last, where they had structure, they played so hard, they were watchable every night. Can't score, though. Got decent goaltending, and just they didn't have the skill to finish. Yep.
Starting point is 00:44:11 They hit two posts in two seconds. Yeah. Yeah like That Nick Jensen post The second one I'm like oh that's it And it didn't go in I was like get out
Starting point is 00:44:18 I thought it was him Yeah me too I thought it was I didn't understand Why the play was still going When you're hot You're hot man I was like it's a goal
Starting point is 00:44:25 Watching the broadcast One thing that's been dropped Is the Babcock Returning to Detroit narrative What? It's not something Who said this? No it's not something
Starting point is 00:44:33 People focus on Like him going back to Detroit and facing His old team Oh stop Not the line No It's just
Starting point is 00:44:41 Nobody really talks About that anymore I think it's good Yeah Because that was a huge thing Like that whole year A couple years ago And like last year
Starting point is 00:44:49 It was kind of a thing It was like Oh he's coming back to Detroit But like Now nobody really talks about it The Kessel angle Sort of went away in Toronto I was actually going to bring that up
Starting point is 00:44:57 Later in the show It's funny We kept going When are they going to stop Talking about it And then when we stopped Asking that question They did
Starting point is 00:45:03 Yeah Like he scored the hat trick Last night And it's no longer on the thing Formerly Phil Kessel Got 92 points last year And nobody in Toronto Was upset about it
Starting point is 00:45:13 Nope Nor have I ever been mad That's more points Than anybody on this team Has had since Doug Gilmore I'm not gonna lie Like it's crazy I'm a little bitter
Starting point is 00:45:23 That the Leafs Are still paying him Their retained salary on him But Like animosity Towards the player No Or even the trade
Starting point is 00:45:32 No animosity Towards the trade One thing I did see Was a lot of people Using three hot dogs For the hat trick Oh that's funny That's great
Starting point is 00:45:40 Yeah but that's not a Toronto thing It's a little Toronto thing. It goes back to Toronto in here. Yeah, but then when you then put a bunch of hot dogs in the Stanley Cup that you won with Pittsburgh. Yeah. The second time. The second.
Starting point is 00:45:55 Two-time Stanley Cup champion. Crazy. It's amazing, by the way, how much the Pittsburgh media is on Phil Kessel. Is it amazing? I think a little bit. He won back-to-back cups, followed that up with the best regular season of his life, and people are still mad. I think maybe
Starting point is 00:46:12 It's just that Phil Kessel Doesn't get along With the media Anywhere he goes That might be it Because they were On him here
Starting point is 00:46:17 And he was the Best player on the team Same shit Yeah I think I think there's I think that they Just don't like him And I don't know
Starting point is 00:46:25 If that You know what Phil might not be The most likable guy To the media Period He just might not be Like it was like
Starting point is 00:46:30 Like Barry Bonds Great player Except for the Roy thing Put that to the side But I'm not answering That question
Starting point is 00:46:37 Because it was stupid Like Barry Bonds Was a jackass yeah there was a time when tiger woods was a total fucking jackass too and people hated him tiger woods oh in his prime when he was like like full-on swagger tiger woods he was a dick and he's a dick to his caddies he was he was a dick to uh certain fans he'd be upset if someone was taking a picture while like like while he was taking a swing somebody'd be like click and he'd be like come on guys he still does that does he oh this is a really shit that tiger woods does you're like
Starting point is 00:47:07 Oh my god But he's also Freaking Tiger Woods Right And that's the thing Like if I'm Jim Rutherford I go yeah But he scores 92 points
Starting point is 00:47:13 Yeah But We could have Kisperi Kapanen Scott Harrington And What was it Nick
Starting point is 00:47:22 Something or other Spalling Nick Spalling In our first round pick Or whatever Or We can have Phil Kessel And I think they'll take Phil Kessel
Starting point is 00:47:31 First round pick That they used To get Freddie There you go Dave Pullen Who has been Frequently roasted on the show Had a fantastic story
Starting point is 00:47:41 Yesterday on the three letter What did he say What was he talking about It was He was talking to a scout I don't remember who the scout was Or who they worked for I'm going to assume the Flyers
Starting point is 00:47:52 It was back when he was playing In the NHL And They were in town I think they were playing The Quebec Nordiques And they were in town And they had watched
Starting point is 00:48:02 Mario Lemieux the night before because Lemieux hadn't been drafted yet. And they go, well, how was he? You know, how was, you know, did he live up to the hype? They go, oh, he's a very, very one-way player. He's a very one-way player. He's just all offense, very one-dimensional player. Didn't even enter the defensive zone.
Starting point is 00:48:21 Didn't even enter the defensive zone. Well, how many goals did he score? Six. But I don't know if he would fit our style. That is so funny. Six goals. Mario Lemieux. Imagine.
Starting point is 00:48:33 Imagine. Just because you're a scout doesn't mean you know the game That's right Yeah, no, it's true No, it's true Doesn't mean you know it well Okay, I think if you think Mario Lemieux's bad You might not be great at your job
Starting point is 00:48:48 Some people make mistakes at their job Part of their job is also to That's a big one I think We should never criticize anybody for mistakes You know, shit Great point there, Jesse Great point
Starting point is 00:49:03 We wouldn't have a show I take my elbow pads Off to you We wouldn't have a show I think we need to give Some credit though We talked about the Leafs And their defense
Starting point is 00:49:14 And whatever Ad nauseum about How they maybe Don't have the skill How you know They're not very good Defensively Quite frankly
Starting point is 00:49:21 And their goals And goals against average And save percentage Would back that up However I think we do need to Give some credit To the Leafs D
Starting point is 00:49:27 Who are doing exactly What they needed to do At the beginning of the season Which is Morgan Ryan Getting the puck to the forwards They are doing that And I think
Starting point is 00:49:38 I think it's going to be Very very interesting You know everybody's going off About the Leafs right now And how great everything is They have not played One playoff team yet Yeah
Starting point is 00:49:45 Their first playoff match Will be tomorrow night Versus Washington Yeah I mean A playoff team from last year You're right Yeah you're right Not one
Starting point is 00:49:52 You're right No I'm not going to nitpick And then you got LA And then you got LA Pittsburgh St. Louis Those are not easy matches Followed by Winnipeg Winnipeg
Starting point is 00:50:00 Calgary That is a tough back half of the month. They're going to really be tested in the next little bit. Get in those wins now, man. They got a lot of time off, though. Yeah, they do. A four-game week is pretty rare. And then they got one two-day off, a three-day off, a two-day off.
Starting point is 00:50:20 That's not a bad October the Leafs have by Leafs standards. And we were just talking about how it's crazy they've already reached five games when Edmonton's played two and Tampa's played, what was it, one, Jesse? Yeah, Tampa's played one game. How did that happen? Yeah. The NHL schedule to start the year has been the weirdest thing. And there's no games tonight.
Starting point is 00:50:39 There's no games on the second Friday of the season. And that brings me to the Oilers, who played their second game. Yeah. Last night. Last night. And had a tough go. Let me just say this. Connor McDavid made a really good point.
Starting point is 00:50:51 He said, you know, we're a weekend and we played one game. This was before the game. And he said, everybody else has had the chance to play two or three, and they're sort of warmed up. They're sort of rolling. And then Ryan Nugent Hopkins was like, yeah, no excuses. We play preseason games. You know, we just got to get out there and play.
Starting point is 00:51:06 But Conor McDavid was honest. I think, like, Nugent was toeing the company line. I get that. But Conor McDavid's right. Why, if you're the Edmonton Oilers and you didn't make the playoffs, are you signing up to go to an international game, play one game there, and then waiting a week to play game two when everybody else has played two or three?
Starting point is 00:51:25 I assume it wasn't their decision. No, it has to be. It has to be their decision. No, I assume the league tells them. No, they can deny that. Absolutely. You're telling me if I'm Daryl Cates, I can't decide that my team isn't going to that?
Starting point is 00:51:36 I absolutely can decide that. I want to say there was a report that a few years ago the Leafs shot that down. I'm not totally sure. Or like you can kick up a stink. You can avoid that. You don't have to do that. Is Edmonton up there enough?
Starting point is 00:51:49 Like I don't know about their ownership relationship with Gary Bettman, but like do they have enough pull to be like, I don't want to do that? I think so. Absolutely. Because then another team gets shoved in there And who knows?
Starting point is 00:51:59 Who did they play? Was it Boston? Jersey. Oh, that's right. In Sweden. Tampa's played two games as of Thursday. I was about to say, one is crazy. Or was it Germany?
Starting point is 00:52:09 Was it Germany or Sweden? I think it was Sweden. I don't know. Europe. Somewhere in Europe. But okay, they're trying to sell the game, trying to grow the game in Europe. Conor McDavid is a perfect player to do that with,
Starting point is 00:52:20 playing against a reigning MVP in Taylor Hall. I get that. But wouldn't, I just feel like they'd be better served playing games here. Who watched those games? Fans of those teams, probably. Live? I don't know, were they late?
Starting point is 00:52:37 I assume so. Or early. No, I assume they were really early because they were in Europe. Well, I understand wanting to do that as well, but what I don't get is, you know, first game of the season, you're a team that already is going to struggle.
Starting point is 00:52:50 Already going to struggle to be in the playoffs, and you're signing up to go across the ocean and then be a week behind everybody else. I think it's one of the stupidest things. If Oilers ownership did have a choice in this, it was a terrible decision. Terrible decision. And I think you saw it last night.
Starting point is 00:53:07 I don't think, like LA started, or not LA, Jesus, who did they play? Montreal played LA. Wasn't it, who went to China? Boston and Calgary. Yeah, so it was Boston. And Boston got killed in their first game. So they played Boston.
Starting point is 00:53:20 And Calgary didn't do so hot in their first two. And Boston is like, like so they so they're taking they take a week off and your first opponent back is boston with that steamroller for first line fun great thank you for that oh yeah and then boston yeah they have a chance to get it back and here let me show you what the oiler schedule looks like now and mark specter you you can you can laugh at this he said oilers are already facing must win games after two losses in the opening in the opening and here's why he's right okay he's absolutely right well dude you start your season off bad it could set the tone for your entire
Starting point is 00:53:56 season so they got the Rangers look at the Coyotes no team is so bad they lose their first 20 games yeah yeah come on it just got in their head when you're done that I want to give you some context on the trip to Scandinavia the Rangers on Saturday who are marginal but so are the Oilers fringe playoff team on the outside then you got Winnipeg Boston Nashville Pittsburgh Washington Nashville. Chicago. Minnesota. That is nasty.
Starting point is 00:54:25 That's six games in a row of the best teams in the NHL. That's a horrible, horrible start. One, two, three, four of those teams made the conference final, and the other team made the second round. But none of that is their fault. That's the schedule maker. If I am sending my team to Sweden and putting them a week behind in terms of scheduling, I'm telling them, you better give me an easy month.
Starting point is 00:54:48 That is bull. I don't think you can ask for I think the schedule First of all Is made by a computer And then they switch out Teams wherever Like on big days
Starting point is 00:54:56 Like around Christmas And New Years And that sort of thing I don't think you can Pick and choose Who you're playing At the beginning of the year Just because you're
Starting point is 00:55:02 Going over to Scandinavian arena I would be all the levels Of tics that you could be If I'm Daryl Cates Right now And I'm You know
Starting point is 00:55:10 I'm tanning somewhere Because that's what Daryl Cates He's always got to tan Seattle He's tanning in Seattle With his sunglasses I am calling the league
Starting point is 00:55:17 And talking very slowly And wasting all their time I think you should be very mad I would be livid I just That's a terrible month Terrible I'm just looking at that like none of those teams
Starting point is 00:55:31 Were wild card they were all like top three When you are the Oilers Based on their record last year And the fact that they were able to improve Very little in the off season most teams are better Most teams are better than the Oilers So you're always Going to have an uphill battle
Starting point is 00:55:47 why are you putting yourself at a disadvantage is my point and those teams those teams in that six game stretch won a combined
Starting point is 00:55:54 nine playoff series last year which is crazy yeah damn that's what I'm talking about jeez by the way
Starting point is 00:56:02 jeez their game was October 6th which was last Saturday yeah versus New Jersey in Gothenburg Sweden
Starting point is 00:56:10 Sweden in Scandinavia Marina and it was played at 2pm Eastern Standard Time so there's all your questions so there's that's noon it was noon in edmonton sure yeah 7 p.m over there and then
Starting point is 00:56:24 watching that played again on thursday and then on november 1st and november 2nd the panthers and jets are going over to helsinki to play two regular season games see i'm okay with that middle of the season at least it's in the middle of the season i'm into that the start of the season you want to get rolling if you're already in it i think it's a little different start of What's their schedule like around that, like before and after it? I'll have to look that up. I would hope at least two before and three after. That's so weird.
Starting point is 00:56:57 It's like two bye weeks almost. So the Jets schedule for November, they have the two days Thursday, Friday in Helsinki, and then they have Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday off. So they don't play until a week later. That's their bye week They got like two bye weeks Yep
Starting point is 00:57:16 Because they play The Leafs On the 27th And then they have All The week off Until they go to Helsinki on the Thursday
Starting point is 00:57:24 And play Florida And then they have The all next week Until they play Colorado The next Friday Jeez So they get about Two weeks off
Starting point is 00:57:30 And play two games in there That's a weird way to I don't know You get a month To get into it Alright we're in a groove And we're barely Going to play hockey
Starting point is 00:57:39 See I'd better I'd be happier with that Because at least Midway through the season Or into the season You could use the rest And they'll get a few wins Yeah
Starting point is 00:57:45 Yeah It may be more welcome Than it is now I think that At the beginning of the season You just want to get going On the season Yeah the Oilers should be mad
Starting point is 00:57:52 Well their schedule Has also been packed In October They play every other day For One, two For For good reason
Starting point is 00:58:00 Yeah they do Every other game One, two, three, four Five, six, seven, eight Nine, ten, eleven, twelve Thirteen, fourteen For fourteen days They play every other day
Starting point is 00:58:09 Plus a back-to-back Jeez they're not the only team I don't know if you're the NHL how you figure this out by the way that stretches
Starting point is 00:58:19 into November Jesse no it doesn't no you're looking at the Oilers dude oh I thought you meant the Oilers I thought you meant the Jets
Starting point is 00:58:26 well okay let's have a look at the Oilers that's why I said three weeks because starting starting yesterday
Starting point is 00:58:33 with Boston going into tomorrow they're playing almost every other day they've got an extra couple days off each week they get the Sunday
Starting point is 00:58:40 Monday Sunday Monday But they're going One, two, three One, two, three One, two And then they go Into November Three, four
Starting point is 00:58:48 That's a pack November It's like It's It's not easy The most they're gonna get Back to back Washington, Tampa Both on the road
Starting point is 00:58:56 They don't get Why did you piss off To get that They don't get Three days off in a row Till November 14, 15, 16 From now Ew
Starting point is 00:59:03 That's That's bad That is bad Sheldon Keefe Of the Toronto Marlies Was also ranting About this early season schedule He's basically saying, like, we haven't had a practice in two weeks,
Starting point is 00:59:14 or we've had one practice in two weeks. He can screw you up, man. Alan Mitchell, a.k.a. Low Tide, tweeted something. Well, not tweeted something, but wrote something in Athletic, and it suggested, like, because the Oilers have looked bad through two games, everybody's freaking out, as they do. Oh, hell yeah. Lay it on me, Alan.
Starting point is 00:59:33 So what they said was, if you're McClellan and Chiarelli, what do you do? What do you do to make this team better? Now, it is two games in. So maybe we could chill Maybe the Oilers are really good Maybe Maybe Jesse Pulley-Arvey Is a great player
Starting point is 00:59:47 Which I actually think he is I think they're just not Deploying him correctly But anyway I think a lot of Oilers fans Would agree with you The idea Of trading Connor McDavid
Starting point is 00:59:58 Came up In which case Edmonton Call us in Toronto We'll give you William Nylander He's yours We got you He's yours
Starting point is 01:00:06 And he's less money We'll put together a package of William Nylander and a belly full of laughs. Do you want me to read the quote? Yep. Please do. Ta-ta-da.
Starting point is 01:00:17 John Tavares, third line center. Sorry. That would be hilarious. At some point, maybe not this season, but in some other season, closer than any Orleans fan
Starting point is 01:00:30 would care to know, the idea of moving out the captain for a fresh start may just start to make sense. Edmonton's famous five-year plans have been reset so many times it might remind science fiction fans of the two-part Star Trek Voyager Hello, Year of Hell episodes. Okay, you've lost me.
Starting point is 01:00:52 Alan, stop it. But you know what? Don't act like that's not going to come up. Oh, my God. No, it can't. It's going to come up. No. He's right.
Starting point is 01:01:04 No. It's going to come up. Okay. No, no. Listen, it doesn't mean the Oilers are going to do it. it means that they're going to start talking about it and Edmonton is a viable option. It is 100.
Starting point is 01:01:12 If we can talk about Austin Matthews being offer sheeted to Arizona 10 months before his deal is up, we can definitely talk about Connor McDavid maybe getting traded. Okay. If Peter Chiarelli... It's a worse conversation, by the way.
Starting point is 01:01:27 It's a worse conversation than... Than the Austin Matthews one. Which is more likely. The Austin Matthews one is way more likely. Easily, full stop. Easily. Okay. Conor McDavid is
Starting point is 01:01:39 Austin Matthews there's at least a little bit of like tugging he can do McDavid is locked in
Starting point is 01:01:48 forever they gotta do that shit on their own they gotta trade him they gotta be like Conor McDavid trading time Conor McTrade him
Starting point is 01:02:00 more like yep it works perfect make the shirt make the shirt Jesse No Conor McTrade in time In a giant clock
Starting point is 01:02:12 Hit the button Hit the button Hit the button You gotta hit the When is it Conor McTrade in time Shirely's excited Kate's excited
Starting point is 01:02:21 Orland's fan's excited Taylor Hall's excited Bobby's Knicks burgers are excited Adam Larson's excited Wow That was six things This is a big clock There's a lot to be excited about
Starting point is 01:02:34 If Peter Shirely even murmurs under his breath the idea of trading Connor McDavid or if McDavid even suggests I'm not all that happy here Daryl Cates needs to hire the Bills Mafia to put Shirelli through a
Starting point is 01:02:51 table and fire him over text fart in his breakfast and never call him again it's Connor McDavid the farting was a little far I don't care
Starting point is 01:03:05 deserved it I don't know how many MVPs is that team going to trade I This is how do you Create the saying anyone can be traded Gretzky got traded and then trade McDavid But no, no, I'm putting my foot down for the sport Alright, it's fun to pick on you. I get it. You're not trading McDavid. Damn it You're out of your minds. No I will
Starting point is 01:03:37 Edmonton This is your intervention I think the league needs to like Pull out their list No no Here's all the ways Because I don't think any Oilers fan Would be like
Starting point is 01:03:49 Yeah this is possible The team Oh It's gotta be Darryl It's not happening This is Alan Mitchell's intervention Yeah you're right No you're right
Starting point is 01:04:00 You're right I just Sorry I got caught up in the Connor McDavid hysteria I just went crazy Conor McDavid Because he brought it up I'm glad you still have your shoes on
Starting point is 01:04:14 This coffee's powerful stuff today The coffee is good Good today You're right It was just low tide bringing it up Yeah And I'm not going to yell at low tide Because he's a friend of mine
Starting point is 01:04:24 Well you don't have to yell at him You can disagree with him though Okay We like Nick Kiprios and Brian Burke We disagree with him strongly Fine Low tide I disagree with trading the league's best player
Starting point is 01:04:33 I'm sure he would too And he didn't say Trade him now No Did you hear how I called him The league's best player He said in a few years It could be something
Starting point is 01:04:41 That we Star Wars Voyager That's what he said Yep In a few years McDavid could be like Beam me up Scotty That's Cause that's you know
Starting point is 01:04:56 Star Wars Right Star Trek When Queen Amidala Was like Beam me up Scotty to boldly go where no man has
Starting point is 01:05:07 Jar Jar Binks isn't that how it goes beam me up doobus oh oh obviously quite fine
Starting point is 01:05:17 that works that was comedically funny yeah we should end the show no we shouldn't we got lots to go I didn't mean to beam you I totally beamed out
Starting point is 01:05:30 of what's going on Coffee cup at me. I don't understand. I beat you. I'm sorry. That's all right, man. It's a red mark. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 01:05:36 Are you okay? No, I'm fine. I'm totally fine. I'm fine. I'm totally cool. It's okay. It was cardboard, man. I'm cool.
Starting point is 01:05:42 You've had a little bit too much coffee. Montreal has this big 25-year Stanley Cup celebration. By the way, yeah, it's been 50 years since the Leafs won a cup, but it has been 25 since Montreal has won a cup. And Montreal's won a lot more cups. I feel like they're starting to feel the pressure a little bit there, too. Don't you? It's got to be weird being, like, an old Habs fan.
Starting point is 01:06:09 Right? Yeah, because it started so well for you. Oh, like, it was a yearly thing. So, as a Habs fan, the best time to croak would have been, like, 93. Because, like, you've seen a lot of cups in your day. Like, take Nick Kiprios' sign a little too literally. I can finally die in peace. And then they just
Starting point is 01:06:29 They're done Yeah They're done That would be a great way to go No but the Leafs Are going to win this year So not yet Not yet
Starting point is 01:06:38 Not for me Anyway They put on this Killer ceremony And then Because they always do Their ceremonies right And then
Starting point is 01:06:47 Oh my god They had the best opening night Across the entire NHL Yeah they did They did It's killer in that You're dead by the end of it Because it takes so long
Starting point is 01:06:56 LA starts their Backup goaltender Is it Jack Campbell Yeah And they lose And they looked Really slow And sluggish
Starting point is 01:07:05 Now Weird That thing that we all Thought LA would be They are No Montreal Montreal
Starting point is 01:07:10 Oh Yeah Montreal No Montreal lost Can you tell I haven't seen the highlights Yeah they got shut out And it wasn't pretty
Starting point is 01:07:17 Yeah Yeah Montreal looks slow Yeah Now I wondered Guys I vouched for you Is it a
Starting point is 01:07:25 Never again Is it a one off because those games happen. Yeah. Or is Montreal just not really that good, but they had an okay start. Yeah, maybe it was a little adrenaline. Maybe they came out of the gate hot.
Starting point is 01:07:40 They looked great in the first game. They really did. They looked great against the Leafs. A little bit of sort of the way I described Detroit, where they had good structure, good work ethic, but they didn't have the finish. They weren't quite there with the finish, but wow, Montreal looking slow.
Starting point is 01:07:57 Against the Kings? Where's Kotkin Yami from? Finland. They didn't have the finish. They did have a finish. Oh, Jesse. Led you down that road. I wasn't sure where you were going.
Starting point is 01:08:12 Okay, okay. Back when I did the Joining the Rush videos with Andrei Osadchenko, we used to shoot the videos talking in English, obviously, but he would put Russian subtitles, and I'd come up with a joke, And he'd be like No no no That doesn't translate to Russian They won't find that funny
Starting point is 01:08:28 And then His go-to joke was always And the Finns are slow Oh that kills in Russia It's hilarious Russians love talking about How slow Finnish people talk That's funny
Starting point is 01:08:39 So that's where I thought You were going with that And I'm like Andre? Weird I was very confused Anyways So I wanted to bring this up
Starting point is 01:08:47 Because of our partnership With Ridge We Have received our Ridge wallets Gentlemen Yay Are you saying that Montreal looks kind of
Starting point is 01:08:55 rigid no what i'm saying is that maybe they don't have a season-long guarantee like our wallets have a lifetime guarantee they actually do really yeah that's cool lifetime guarantee this is gonna be like an anticlimactic unboxing i feel like because the wallet is just on the front of the box and then i'm gonna open it and it's gonna be so you can so you comes with a screwdriver so you can adjust your wallet to make it just a little bit bigger or switch things out nifty yeah there you go i like this now i got the the i got the carbon one so this mine's like a hockey card or not a hockey card a hockey stick and the great thing about this partnership with ridge wallet is that it benefits you because we want to hook you up with 10 off yours oh yeah if you go to
Starting point is 01:09:40 ridge was like do we have a promo code and we're like no that turns out we do we said no nobody said no ridge wallet.com slash sdp use the sdp as your code and you too can have a wallet that last forever now there were a few people that were like hey that wallet seems a wee bit pricey here's the thing you replace a wallet what every couple years yeah yeah what do they cost 35 30 40 bucks something like that yeah so let's say over the course of 10 years you replace your wallet three times how about you do it once how about your wallet's not indestructible like this exactly and the best part about this is they're supposed to be you know in the front of your pocket rather than your back you carry less stuff and you're just you're more efficient in general
Starting point is 01:10:25 so go to ridgewallet.com and use the uh use the code sdp or ridgewallet.com sdp to you get your 10 off your rich wallet also a great stocking stuffer just throwing that out there here listen listen to the microphone christmas that's me hitting the wallet why why not why not christmas it is not even halloween great halloween gift great american thanksgiving gift it's okay you know it's too early to talk about christmas when costco has their christmas stuff out i uh i saw because they had their christmas stuff out too no with their halloween no canadian tire is supposed to be one of the good ones no they bring costco's unreasonable they bring their halloween and their christmas stuff out at the same time smart because we're done with thanksgiving
Starting point is 01:11:08 already yep we are get with it america yeah america they have free worldwide shipping on orders over $40? Mm-hmm. Hey. That's cool. Here's an idea. This Halloween, give out Ridge Wallets.
Starting point is 01:11:23 Imagine. Because there's nothing kids want more than an indestructible wallet. Ridge Wallets. Trick or treat. Is their tagline. Go to their website
Starting point is 01:11:37 and check it out. It's what it says. Trick or treat, Ridge Wallets. Only carry the candy you need with Ridge Wallet. Trick or treating. The kids are all about Shawn Mendes
Starting point is 01:11:48 and O.K. Yes. Yeah. BTS. And Ridge Wallets. Hey, you want you want chocolate or chips
Starting point is 01:11:59 or a Ridge Wallet? I know my answer. It's true. Get 10% off RidgeWallet.com STP. Moving on. There's so much.
Starting point is 01:12:11 There's just so much, guys. So much. So much. Brandon Saad. You only bring this up because you're going to laugh. I'm not laughing at Brandon Saad. But this was tweeted to me like a few times. Brandon Saad is now on the fourth line.
Starting point is 01:12:24 Why? Because Brandon Saad is having a rough go in Chicago. Because Brandon Saad isn't the player that they were hoping he was. Oh, Adam. How did they get him, Adam? They traded Artemi Panarin. The worst trade since the 40s. Who by the way
Starting point is 01:12:43 Scored I think Twice last night And looked amazing Doing it Sod Oh no Bernard Oh Sorry
Starting point is 01:12:49 Yeah I wouldn't make Something Yeah no He's on the fourth line No but I thought He was gonna be like But then he was great Oh
Starting point is 01:12:55 You should have just Like stuck with your Brand Adam And gone Brandon Sod Is bad at hockey He's not though He's just not that role
Starting point is 01:13:07 I wasn't going after him I knew Adam had a Twitter poll Who's worse at hockey Brandon Saad or Tom Wilson Oh man I don't hate Brandon Saad By the end of the month
Starting point is 01:13:16 Who will have more points Brandon Saad or Tom Wilson It's just unfortunate That he was involved In that trade It's not his fault It's not his fault They brought him in
Starting point is 01:13:23 To play a role That he can't play Not his fault How long before Everything comes crashing down In Anaheim Because Getz laughs out Perry's a ghost of himself
Starting point is 01:13:35 Kessler can barely walk And John Gibson is saving an obnoxious amount of high-danger scoring chances. So you've got... John Gibson is so much better than I thought he was. Oh, man.
Starting point is 01:13:47 But where have we seen this before on a Randy Carlisle-coached team? Can't imagine. How close is Randy Carlisle to getting Peter Holland as his number one center? Where's Jay McClemon at these days? That's what I want to know.
Starting point is 01:14:01 Where is Jay McClemon at? Or Jared Smithson. He might have retired. Kenny Holman, by the way, is, I think, in the AHL. Who? Petey Hollman. Oh, is he?
Starting point is 01:14:11 Yeah. Pete Doggy Dog? Pete Doggy Dog. Pistol. Pistol Pete. Pistol Pete. Let's look him up. Where is Pete Hollman?
Starting point is 01:14:18 Hopefully playing for the Ducks farm team so they can call him up. Aren't they one of the teams that have seven people on IR? He is playing for the Hartford Wolfpack New York Rangers team. Oh, Rangers. I know Andre Case is out.
Starting point is 01:14:33 Kasha. No, Case. He's spelled K-A-S-E. No, Jesse, it's a wallet. It's not a case. It's a... Yeah, we got a case. You put your kasha in it.
Starting point is 01:14:47 Wow! It's not bad. Wow, Steven. It's not bad at all. Ridge wallets! I know Ryan Gesloff is out. Ryan Kessler is out. Patrick Eves is out.
Starting point is 01:15:00 Quite a few injuries. Eves is still out, huh? Yeah. Yeah, I feel like... I feel like progressing and it won't be long is the update. Ah, good. Well,
Starting point is 01:15:09 I mean, I got a theory about smash fest. I got a theory about injuries. Oh dear. Oh, Adam, how dare you? I just feel,
Starting point is 01:15:16 no, honestly, I feel like, I feel like Anaheim's the team that's going to, uh, there was actually an article written on Yahoo about it today. And there've been a few others that have alluded to it. I think Anaheim's the team that falls off the map this year.
Starting point is 01:15:27 Maybe. Jeez. Like yet again, like didn't, didn't their year start exactly the same way last year? Everyone got hurt. yeah and this year somehow it's worse yeah absolutely i also think the type of hockey they're playing isn't is is i think it's exacerbated by the fact that like everyone's hurt
Starting point is 01:15:45 yeah you know or maybe not the player they were it's a poor it's not a good storm but they have a bruin now one thing that um one thing that i wanted to bring up here quickly too uh before we get to something a little more serious is the golden knights are off to a cold start now are they only the golden knights if now it's early it is early kasha but we gotta ask the question because this is a show and this is what we do are the golden knights starting how they should have started or the golden knights starting under what they should be i am so hard on that train that they are what we thought they were a year ago and it's over well i think they look better than they did on paper and they still don't look very good no they look terrible
Starting point is 01:16:32 I shouldn't say terrible They just don't look like A playoff team At all Okay So what was last year Was last year magic It was magic
Starting point is 01:16:42 And it was great Goaltending From nobodies For a very A large part of the season And then the playoffs It was Marc-Andre Fleury Almost setting
Starting point is 01:16:50 For the first three rounds He had the playoff record For save percentage They should have got Murdered By the Jets And the Jets Lost in five
Starting point is 01:17:00 Yep Five The Jets Probably should have Won the cup last year Who is there Man The first round
Starting point is 01:17:08 Didn't the Kings Score like five goals Yeah total No but the Kings Can't score either Fair But it's also the playoffs And they're a playoff team
Starting point is 01:17:19 Yeah yeah And it's The Golden Knights And they should have Beat them Because everybody Should have beat them Over 82 games
Starting point is 01:17:25 Fleury had the best Save percentage Through three rounds And I'm pretty sure The second place guy Was Jonathan Quick Who won the cup that year He was incredible
Starting point is 01:17:36 And it just wasn't enough Yeah I But They were friggin What second place In the entire league Yeah In the regular season
Starting point is 01:17:45 I wonder if it was just magic Whole bunch of guys Who were cast offs Coming together For one magic year And they have everything Clicking Now you got
Starting point is 01:17:54 Patch ready And Stastny Stastny's injured Already That's rough Is William I think William Carlson may have made the
Starting point is 01:18:01 I'm going to go out on a limb here and say William Carlson should have taken whatever long term deal they offered him this year he signed for one year I think it's 4.75
Starting point is 01:18:10 maybe it wasn't offered yeah maybe oh I think he was offered a long term deal but I think it was at like 4 million dollars do you think he's going to well that's what I'm saying
Starting point is 01:18:18 like that's such a tough if you're William Carlson like god that had to be such a Tough decision Like I don't think
Starting point is 01:18:32 In his mind At any point Prior to last year He was like I'm a 40 goal scorer In this league Right And then he scored
Starting point is 01:18:38 And he's like Holy shit But like how How did that happen He scored 9 goals In 15-16 Well that's also How he was used
Starting point is 01:18:45 6 goals In 16-17 And then 43 Last year He was a 4th liner Until It's a little bit Of usage
Starting point is 01:18:52 You don't just get All of a sudden You put you on the first line You're a 40 goal scorer That's not I have a hard time believing no matter what season he has this year, he's going to get more than he's currently making. So Dimitri Filipovich had a great tweet when the Golden Knights lost in the
Starting point is 01:19:07 finals last year. Oh yeah. Which was the Golden Knights died how they lived on an insane PDA bender. Or not PDA. PDO. PDA bender. They were making out all over the ice. No, PDO bender.
Starting point is 01:19:16 They're all making out. Just a crazy makeout session in public. It took me a second. I'm like, pardon? An insane PDO bender. And I think that's what happened, man. Like, I think that's how he scored that much. I think that's why Perron, who was a kid, like, the Edmonton Oilers couldn't get him out of town fast enough.
Starting point is 01:19:32 Almost everyone had a career year. Yeah, yeah. They're unbelievable. They've got a bunch of good players who, boy oh boy, like, I just don't think they can carry that team long term. I don't think so either. Now, we'll see. We'll see. Like, they were, they were, like, the biggest monkey wrench maybe in the history of the sport or in, like, recent memory.
Starting point is 01:19:57 A team that bad looking on paper Made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Final And were one of the best regular season teams And Stastny's probably an upgrade over Neal Uh, yeah Yeah Yeah, well I think so
Starting point is 01:20:10 They're better just because he's the center Yeah And then they replaced Neal with Pacioretty And I would argue Pacioretty's better than Neal Yeah And Pacioretty might be better than Neal for longer as well Like it just Pacioretty
Starting point is 01:20:23 Like Neal's Neal's a great hockey player I'm not trying to disparage him They're not off to the greatest start in Calgary. No, but they're not off to the greatest start overall. What if Vegas is in the basement, and by the end of the month, Montreal Canadiens fans are going, see? See, I told you.
Starting point is 01:20:38 It's rotten. It follows them around. We're also in the basement, but hey. Yeah. Look at him. We meant to be. But Adam, how do you feel about Nate Schmidt? I didn't hear anything about that, by the way.
Starting point is 01:20:50 I am surprised, frankly. I'm sorry. Can you not make steroid jokes when someone gets caught taking steroids? Why is that a problem? Adam, he had meat. Oh, no. Nate Schmidt might be offended, and I might be offended on behalf of Nate Schmidt, who definitely took steroids because he tested positive for them.
Starting point is 01:21:07 No, he had some meat, like Canelo Alvarez. Oh, yeah, yeah. He had some meat. Spiked with steroids. Crazy how that happens. They do all kinds of stuff to your food these days. Oh, sure they do, yeah. Here's the thing.
Starting point is 01:21:20 Nate. I didn't mean to start this. You took steroids. It's okay. It's okay man You were trying to get an edge I get it You were caught though
Starting point is 01:21:26 Man No But Adam Listen He didn't mean to take them They just Adam Wilde's views Did not necessarily reflect
Starting point is 01:21:34 The views of the Steve Dangle podcast Jesse Blake and I I tripped over this IV And it went right into my veins Adam and I I don't know why this is offensive Why is this not Like
Starting point is 01:21:45 So here's the line here Best defenseman I want you to look Nashman in the eye I'll pull up a picture of him And you tell me I love Nate Schmidt I wanted him to be a Leaf
Starting point is 01:21:55 I was so impressed When the Leafs played Washington I'm like They're playing Carl Osner Over this guy Nate Schmidt is an awesome Hockey player
Starting point is 01:22:02 Jesse that's unfair I could never say A mean thing to Nate Schmidt He looks like some sort of Adorable Australian creature Yeah He's also a phenomenal Hockey player
Starting point is 01:22:09 Yeah He got caught doing steroids So what Okay move on everyone But I don't know why It's a big deal That I made a joke Tell him
Starting point is 01:22:17 You're gonna say Something mean to him He's adorable You're gonna tell this man He cheated On purpose He cheated accidentally Look at that
Starting point is 01:22:25 And if you don't believe that Then sir You're calling him a liar You're right You know what Him and Maria Sharapova Should get together And say
Starting point is 01:22:33 He should have taken Like And Mark McGuire And Raphael Palmeiro And Ken Caminiti And Barry Bonds He's got And Sammy Sosa
Starting point is 01:22:45 He's got a kids television Type of face He does Like you know how It was Steve On Blue's Clues And then it was Joe Yeah
Starting point is 01:22:52 Next it should be Nate You know what he didn't do Is ruin a guy's life And then And then Recent And then come out later And say oh yeah
Starting point is 01:22:59 I did do steroids Like Ryan Braun Of the Milwaukee Brewers Who are still in the Third tonight Yeah He's playing well He's playing well
Starting point is 01:23:06 But he did See the thing with Ryan Braun You guys know sports things We would have forgotten about it Except that he ruined A guy's life Oh He actually like
Starting point is 01:23:13 Ruined a guy's reputation And then Yeah It's a long story Is that what you want Nate Schmidt to do No Nate Schmidt's great
Starting point is 01:23:19 Come on I would take him on the Leafs any day. I'm sure he's a good guy. You know what? Sometimes we all do something stupid. So what?
Starting point is 01:23:26 But if I can't make a joke about that, which is innocuous, not inoculated, innocuous, ha ha, because inoculated means you're taking inoculated.
Starting point is 01:23:36 That word has more than two syllables. If you're in the medical profession, you get me right now. I'm just saying. Your shovel is huge. Well, I have to put my head in the hole, right?
Starting point is 01:23:48 So I have to have a big shovel. you see self-deprecating well thank you all right now let's get we do have to switch gears here rather abruptly but yeah but this is something that we should talk about um and i debated about whether to put it in the beginning of the show or not uh i've decided to put it here but it's not these are not in order of significance they're just this is what we're putting it but yeah austin watson was uh suspended for 27 games yes by the league for domestic violence for domestic violence now uh i believe he's also arrested too oh yeah yeah so there was like a whole that was all part of it now an arbitrator because an independent arbitrator which the so so if the
Starting point is 01:24:28 player if a player is suspended and they want to appeal the nhlpa has to has to appeal it yes like they're doing with tom wilson they had to do it with austin watson because austin watson said he wanted to appeal it. And so yesterday we found out it will not be 27 games, it will be instead 18. Now here's, I want you to save your comments
Starting point is 01:24:50 for a second. Sure. I'm going to read you what the NHL said and I'm going to read you what the NHLPA said, okay? Cool? Great.
Starting point is 01:24:56 Starting with the NHL. We have reviewed the arbitrator, I hope I'm saying his name right, we have reviewed the arbitrator Shyam Das, Das' opinion, on the NHLPA's appeal of Austin Watson's suspension
Starting point is 01:25:09 for domestic assault, which reduced the league-imposed suspension of 27 games to 18 games. We are disappointed with the arbitrator's decision. We firmly believe that the right of appeal We firmly believe in the right of an appeal to an arbitrator of a league discipline was never Sorry, let me just start that sentence again. We firmly believe that the right of appeal to an arbitrator of league discipline
Starting point is 01:25:31 was never intended to substitute the arbitrator's judgment for that of the commissioner, particularly on matters of important league policy and the articulation of acceptance standards of conduct for individuals involved in the National Hockey League. Sorry, the font is not the best. The NHL remains committed to continuing to do what we believe is right, and in this regard, we intend to continue our steadfast efforts
Starting point is 01:25:55 to ensure everyone in our league is adequately educated and sensitized to the importance of this serious social issue. We will not hesitate to adhere to and enforce, through firm discipline as necessary, the standards of personal conduct we feel are appropriate to our league. That is the NHL's statement. Let me read you the NHLPA's statement, okay? The National Hockey League Players Association issued the following statement
Starting point is 01:26:20 this evening regarding the impartial arbitrator's decision to reduce Nashville Predators forward Austin Watson's suspension from 27 to 18 NHL games. The NHLPA takes domestic violence seriously and continues to work together with the NHL to ensure that players are educated on this important societal issue. As a part of those efforts, the NHL and NHLPA conduct domestic violence awareness training at our Rookie Orientation Program.
Starting point is 01:26:52 As part of those efforts, so this is poorly worded, but anyway, they have it at the Rookie Orientation Program and during the season for all NHL players. The CBA provides players with the right to appeal discipline imposed by the NHL for off-ice conduct to an impartial arbitrator. This essential right is intended to encourage the fair and consistent application of discipline. The arbitrator's independence helps ensure that the process and decision are fair. That is a principle to which we should always strive to adhere, even in cases where the subject matter is as difficult as domestic violence. Sorry about the reading. I blew that.
Starting point is 01:27:26 Yeah, there's another important point brought up by Scott Wheeler. I'd love to know how Cheyenne Doss arrived at the decision to reduce Austin Watson's suspension. I'd also like to know if the NHL is going to move to remove Doss as arbitrator, which is within their rights. The MLB removed Doss after Doss overturned Ryan Braun's 50-game suspension. So there's a little accidental tie-in there for you, Adam. Very interesting.
Starting point is 01:27:54 So that is very interesting So I was about to say The NHL and the NHLPA Saw some people getting on them Their hands are a little tied On this It went to an independent arbitrator And that arbitrator
Starting point is 01:28:09 Came to a decision And I guess they have to honor it Like they can't be like No, too bad You're suspended 27 games They can't do that They can't legally do that That's the reason they have arbitrators
Starting point is 01:28:19 So you don't make a decision They make the decision, yeah But what Scott brings up is something they can do after the fact after the fact sure the other thing with the nhlpa you know how could the nhlpa defend him i think what you brought up is they have to right they have to that's the player's union job they have to do comes to them and says i want this and they say okay we represent you we will go file this arbitration and then it goes they can't just be like they can't legally deny otherwise they can't collect fees from him exactly right so like if i
Starting point is 01:28:49 remember correctly in the past i was in a union someone a co-worker was caught stealing like red-handed that's a you're getting fired but the union still has to go to bat and try to see what they can do yes exactly uh because that's sort of their job and like they don't have to like it but it is sort of their job um this freaking sucks this sucks and it's a terrible decision um i too Scott would like to know how he came to this decision. Now, that should have to be issued publicly by the way. How they came to
Starting point is 01:29:25 the decision? I would love to know that. I assume he's never going to do that but I would love to know that. This is why it's so important to have policy in place in the first place so that you don't have to go through
Starting point is 01:29:41 this. You have a policy for a guy leaving the bench But you don't have a policy for this It's 10 games automatic You leave the bench for a fight You don't have a policy for this? Come on guys This is the issue that I have with the NHL suspension policies Is that they leave so much
Starting point is 01:29:59 To chance That they so often get burned If Tom Wilson is a Three time offender For a particular style of hockey That Tom Wilson plays, which he is There should be It should be like 5, 10, 20 games
Starting point is 01:30:14 because we know hey we don't we don't have to think about what tom wilson did we know it's a it's five games plus let's say it's a minimum of this it's a minimum of that right in the case of domestic violence and this is part of the problem the nhl doesn't have a domestic or an anti-domestic violence program other than the education program that the nhlpa refers to they don't have anything in there that says if you are doing this and we know you did this you will be suspended this many games now how do they now that it's 18 games so like is this the precedent or can it be changed if they change policy and they establish that this is what a player gets and then if they do make it policy can it still be fought because this is the precedent like do you see what you've done
Starting point is 01:31:07 now you've established i guess what you haven't done yeah did you see what your inaction caused and and i'll be clear on this and no with no offense to uh oscar sunquist and that sort of thing what happened with tom wilson i believe tom wilson should have 20 games suspended i 100% believe it i also i also believe that tom wilson should not be suspended longer than austin watson yes 100% and now well and now he can go dude what the hell i got more than this guy it was like i I didn't do anything illegal. It was like when Josh Gordon got suspended for a year from the NFL for smoking weed and Ray Rice punched his wife out in an elevator.
Starting point is 01:31:44 On camera? Before the camera came out. Oh, right. Two games. He had two games for that. And then the video came out and then they suspended him. Unbelievable. Unbelievable.
Starting point is 01:31:55 This is what inaction gets you, man. This is what inaction gets you. Doug McClain had a great rant. He sure did. It's disappointing. And you know what? I feel like what bothers me here is that I think I was talking to when I was on filling in for the on the fan, Ashley Docking, who I was filling in with, really made a great point. She was talking about we're talking about it was actually sexual assault that was that was up.
Starting point is 01:32:22 and she said, you know, there are, there are, I said, in what context is there a time where you can, you can say, okay, we can definitively say that this person, you know, uh, they, they did this, they are sorry for it. And you would believe them. And she said, let me see the receipts. I said, what do you mean? She said, let me see receipts. Let me see that you went to treatment. Let me see that you went and you did outreach. Let me see that you educated yourself. And she's like not over three months years she's like let me see that you went to therapy let me see like she's like this this is the problem it's not a summer camp no this is a this is a life change and and she's absolutely right i think it's one of those things where you kind of have to
Starting point is 01:33:07 um where where to me 18 games is is 18 games and he's going to lose the money and that's going to hurt but where's the change it's like when you send someone to jail who is high on heroin well they're addicted to heroin. So when they get out of jail, they're going to go back and they're going to do heroin. Now, I'm not suggesting that Austin Watson is going to go back and this is going to happen again. I hope to heck it doesn't. But what are you doing as a league to rehabilitate this person? Now, now you've taken responsibility for them. They're a part of your players union, especially on the NHLPA. The NHL's job is to spend them. The NHLPA's job is to rehabilitate him you say you represent him you also represent his family you represent the players and their
Starting point is 01:33:52 families your job is to make sure this doesn't happen again and to make sure that a guy like this that is has a history of this now is prone to this now is to make sure that you're that you are doing everything you can this is not this has not been a good couple months for the nhlpa it's it's a terrible look it's a terrible look and what's unfortunate is that 10 years from now We're going to look back on this and we're going to say, I cannot believe that even happened. Thank goodness there's a policy now. Well, sure. And what we'll say is how, man, it was so easy for them to implement a policy.
Starting point is 01:34:26 I'm surprised they didn't do it sooner. Yep. But this is the NHL sometimes. The solution is right there. It's right there and they can't figure it out. Who's fighting this? The right thing to do is right here. Like, who would fight this?
Starting point is 01:34:45 No one's going to fight this. Like, who's standing in the way of this? No one. Dudes, by the way. But, what the f... Again, yeah, like you said, it seems frustratingly simple. And it is. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:34:56 Who's fighting this? And this is my point. The fact is, you now have responsibility. The NHLPA, it's funny, they'll take responsibility. There's a guy, I believe it was Michael Haley, just entered the substance abuse program. He did? Yeah. Oh, I didn't even see that.
Starting point is 01:35:11 That just came out. So they'll take responsibility for that. Why is there no rehab for this? Unless there is. And in which case, if there is, Austin Watson should be out more than 18 games. It should be like three, four months that you're in a rehabilitation program, at least.
Starting point is 01:35:28 At least. At least. I'm going to go with the season. Isn't that a little gross that Roberto Osuna's in the playoffs? Come on now. Come on now. Yeah, man. It's freaking gross.
Starting point is 01:35:41 I just don't understand. The NHL, like, they tried to get the bigger suspension here, but they did create the sponsor. Or I guess didn't prevent it. I bet it's one of those things that they do work out in the next CBA talk. Oh, yeah. You would think, unless they don't. Yes, Adam, you would think, unless they don't.
Starting point is 01:36:06 Ah, surely they will do the right thing. Well, nevertheless. do it do an NHL and it's sad that the NHL always has to be the last one
Starting point is 01:36:14 they always seem to be behind on all these issues great damn point Jesse everything everything right but can we be honest in saying that the NHL
Starting point is 01:36:24 is run by people who this issue affects the least hmm shh damn mmhmm it doesn't factor
Starting point is 01:36:31 into their everyday life guys mmhmm they can't relate to it PA too And this is why diversity matters I'm just You know
Starting point is 01:36:42 This is This is the unfortunate thing Zero forward thinking In the league No None Like no foresight It's all
Starting point is 01:36:48 Whoops Yeah Reactionary Exactly Like this comes along Let's do something about it Oh some guy did this Let's suspend him for
Starting point is 01:36:55 I don't know This many games Instead of Hey let's make some rules Of things that'll probably happen Because These are things that happen And then let's
Starting point is 01:37:04 When it comes to us We'll be prepared People were saying this Because that's what you want You want to be prepared for these things. People were saying this the second the Watson News came out, like that it happened, like even prior to the suspension. They're like, wait, there's no policy?
Starting point is 01:37:20 You're just like, oh, we'll deal with that when it comes along. But they have no teeth. They have the NHL abstract. They're just generic words. That was busy work for someone on a keyword that day. It's a PDF. Thank you, Adam. That's about as good as it is.
Starting point is 01:37:34 so this is i i i have to i have to say and jess you're absolutely right they are the last league on everything at what point do i i don't know what moves the needle here but the nhl is so hard-headed when it comes to anything that's the right thing to do like from a business perspective in 2004 2005 that season that they lost they had a 100 million dollar television deal which at the time was big money with espn oh this instead of capitulating on a couple things with the players we're moving on by the way we're not really comparing no no no no but but understand but i'm giving examples instead of going okay players we're going to come to some sort of agreement so We don't lose this TV deal.
Starting point is 01:38:25 They said, no, you can take your TV deal. By the way, NHL and ESPN had been partners at that point for 25 years. And they went to what network? The Outdoor Life Network? Versus. Versus. Which is, does that even exist anymore? An arm of NBC.
Starting point is 01:38:39 It wasn't at the point of being independent, then it became an arm of NBC. And then. For much, much less money. And then now, yeah. No, I think it was. I want to say it was for more money. But you're on freaking versus. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:38:52 And when it comes to the concussion stuff, the NHL flat out refuses to do anything right. And this is the problem. It's the shovel of blame. Well, that's on the PA. Well, the PA goes, well, that's on you. And then every few years they get together and they fight about it. It's so frustrating. I'll give you a business example and a concussion example.
Starting point is 01:39:15 These don't even compare to the severity of what this is. But then they fight about it for an entire year And it's alright everyone There's a trapezoid behind the net And the jerseys are smaller Can we also say How dare the Predators Bring him out in full equipment
Starting point is 01:39:33 For their banner raising They did? When they brought up those ridiculous three banners First of all, how dare they Have a banner raising at all But they brought him out in full equipment He was there on the ice with all the players In full equipment
Starting point is 01:39:48 How is that allowed? Okay. If you are a suspended player, you are grounded, man. Like, you're not coming to the game. You're not even allowed in the building. Let's take away any of the Predators' baby fat anyway. You know, because they were this cute little team for a while that everyone sort of cheered for. Mike Fisher says some foul shit online all the time.
Starting point is 01:40:10 No one says anything. No one says a thing. That team paid Mike Ribeiro's bills. And they bring out Austin Watson I didn't even know that Jesse Yeah thank you to
Starting point is 01:40:22 Kevin Who he went to Nashville We saw him When we went down there Because I tweeted him About the banners And then he's like
Starting point is 01:40:28 Well I'm just focused on Austin Watson Being out there And that would bother The hell Kevin's a die hard Preds fan
Starting point is 01:40:36 But that would bother him To know Not a good move at all No Well yeah It's like What can you say about that It's gross
Starting point is 01:40:42 Raising your fairy tale banners What the Join us You're one of us You're on our team That's terrible. No, that's terrible. You don't get to.
Starting point is 01:40:50 No. You don't get to. It's a privilege to play in the NHL. You lost that privilege. And we'll leave it at that, I guess. And we yelled sort of about, you know, I think Wilson came out for the cup banner raising. He made an on-ice no-no that we yelled and raved about.
Starting point is 01:41:11 This is a little bit different, guys. Be better. Yeah. They won't, though. For the thousandth time, I, against my better judgment, I have. Those are two of the weakest statements I've ever seen. Like, that's so freaking weak. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:41:26 The NHLPA basically said, well, it's unpleasant. Well, what did you want us to do? This is what we're supposed to do, and the NHL said, we can't do anything. The NHLPA made us have an arbitrator. We can't do anything. A better sentence would have been, we can't do anything, but we could have. Well. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:41:45 What did you learn? Yeah. What did you learn? Show me you learned. All right. You made a mistake. Show me the receipts. Hey, people made mistakes.
Starting point is 01:41:51 What did you learn? Take steps. There you go. There you go. Show me the receipts. Damn Ashley Docking. And with that, do you want to do something good that an NHL team did today? Let's do that.
Starting point is 01:42:05 Let's hear some good news. Carolina Hurricanes put out a video today. Uh-oh. And I'm going to send it to you, Adam. Uh-oh. Okay. End of the game thing did they do? Yay or nay?
Starting point is 01:42:15 End of the game thing. Where they smash into the boards. Did we mention that last episode? No, we didn't. But you know what? It would be nice if they actually put some effort into it. Like what? You want them to like frigging bash into the boards, go through the glass?
Starting point is 01:42:27 Who was the goalie who didn't try? I assume McElhinney? No, it wasn't McElhinney. It was the other goalie. Yeah, yeah. Mrazek? I think it was Mrazek who was just trailing in the back. He's known to not jump on things the same.
Starting point is 01:42:40 Like there's rumors about that guy. Mrazek? Yeah, well, go back to his celebrations from the World Juniors. Why was he Oh my god He was all over the place He celebrated bigger Than most of the players
Starting point is 01:42:51 Weird Mrazek was great Very very weird So we need to put on our headphones So put on your headphones And Steve you gotta watch the video So head on over to Adam's side Head on over
Starting point is 01:42:58 The PR guy For the Carolina Hurricanes Mike Sandheim Mike Sandheim Put out this video Cause he wanted to fine One of the other members Of the PR department
Starting point is 01:43:11 For dabbing Oh dear And it's amazing Oh no It's so good Oh, I love it Oh, no Wow, double rule break
Starting point is 01:43:43 He had to have been aware of the presence of the camera as Ajo approached his position in the fist bump line. As Ajo approaches, Sagaster tilts his head back and opens his mouth, indicating his clear intent for a forceful, simultaneous dab with Ajo. It is important to note that given the position of the camera and Ajo's body position, the dab is avoidable and entirely in Sagaster's control.
Starting point is 01:44:09 The bylaws of the NHL DPRE clearly state that members who repeatedly violate rules will be punished more severely with each new violation. Sagister has been cited for violations of Rule 3.0 throughout his time with both the Washington Capitals and the Carolina Hurricanes. To summarize, this is a clear violation of the rules prohibiting PR personnel from being seen on camera, as well as an intentional and forceful dab. Sagaster is a repeat offender under the terms of the NHLDPRE. The Department of PR Etiquette has assessed Pace Sagaster with a fine of four dozen Bojangles biscuits to be delivered prior to the Hurricanes game against the Colorado Avalanche on October 20th. that must be a local uh food place he even like nailed the voice and speech pattern of patrick burke he did yeah he did um and also bojangles twitter feed of the bojangles famous chicken and biscuits they have 33 000 followers those must be good chicken and biscuits you get 33 000
Starting point is 01:45:16 followers are the carolina hurricane okay so i i just want to sure applaud for having fun at work like that's awesome you guys seem like having a great time that's a great video i love it because I have to watch those stupid PR Department of Players AV videos all the time. This one's hilarious. So when I was doing ice surfing the other day, Jeff Merrick, while ogling Fogle, the rookie who's having an amazing start for the Carolina Hurricanes, we were all sort of talking about, like, you know, Tom Dundon had a bit of a summer where we're like, what the hell is this guy doing?
Starting point is 01:45:49 What are the Hurricanes? I don't understand anything. But one thing they're clearly doing right out of the gate, They're establishing themselves Or they're trying to establish themselves As the team of fun That's a great identity The team of fun
Starting point is 01:46:03 They're finally doing something that I've wanted teams to do For years and that's doing something cool At the end of a game Other than raising your sticks at center ice Remember the first time a team did that We were like Going nuts You appreciate your fans so much
Starting point is 01:46:20 I love you Remember when the Leafs didn't do it at the end of the last play season People cried and shit their pants? Yes. So there was... Which I still think is the dumbest thing to happen in Leafs history. It was pretty silly. It was a controversy.
Starting point is 01:46:33 It was silly on many, many fronts. And nobody would have noticed it if the reporters were the ones that blew that out of them. No, it was Gord Stelic. Gord Stelic blew the whole case open. Did he? Yeah, I think so. Wow. I think so.
Starting point is 01:46:46 But you're like, oh, that's stupid. It's not a story. and then you find out like it was like a conscious decision made by the Leafs players and you're like now I hate
Starting point is 01:46:56 everyone involved yeah but anyway the Hurricanes established themselves as the team of fun with the end of the game celebration
Starting point is 01:47:03 they got Curtis McElhinney that's fun and now they they make this video they make this video I like that they're having a good first two weeks
Starting point is 01:47:12 I don't even know what their record is make the Hurricanes fun again well and I think they are working on it they are working on it I like that
Starting point is 01:47:19 Quickly too Before we get into The press conference Jesse and Steve and I Are playing in the Eric Lindros Invitational Celebrity hockey class
Starting point is 01:47:28 And we all need your help In fundraising I need your help In fundraising Oh yeah I really need you to Donate to my team Because I'm really behind
Starting point is 01:47:37 Adam How much have you raised So far? $165 $165 You know what would be great? What? If nobody donated to Adam
Starting point is 01:47:45 No That's really shit It's all going to the same place If you want to donate It's all going to Easter Seals Ontario If you want to donate You can donate to Steve
Starting point is 01:47:53 Easter Seals Ontario By the way Is a charity that Helps out kids With physical disabilities And it is a charity That my family Benefited from
Starting point is 01:48:01 When I was younger If you want to donate You can hit up my Twitter Where I provide a link To my donation page And it would be great It's my pinned tweet It is Steve's
Starting point is 01:48:10 But I will also pin it And then you can find it there So Maybe Adam should pin it No no Because you know It would be fun If Adam doesn't raise enough money
Starting point is 01:48:19 And he has to pocket He has to pay out of pocket To play in our tournament I am unemployed Out of pocket wild You have to donate to yourself Because you waited until the last minute And didn't raise enough funds
Starting point is 01:48:33 Until the last minute With a little under a month left I'm just saying Steve and I already did our charity raising I'm using my time off To try to help to help raise money for charity and you guys are telling me
Starting point is 01:48:48 that I need to be paying the money that I don't have. Two guys who are employed did it already. And somehow found the time. What took you so long? That's a good question. Oh, well, the table's turned.
Starting point is 01:48:59 I don't have an answer. Steve Dangle lecturing lazy, jobless Adam Wilde. This is a comfy chair, Adam. You're right. I see what I'm going to say. so anyway get a raisin buddy because you're a little behind yeah i gotta get going 165 dollars what are you at jesse uh i think i was at like 440 something you may play yes you need to raise
Starting point is 01:49:28 a minimum of 400 dollars to play and i passed it yeah i got six different people thank you to all of you who have donated so far and we'll just continue on so if you want to donate to uh my fun actually if you raise over fifteen hundred dollars you get a free hockey stick you do yeah yeah you saw that on the on the page the they'll gift you with a special hockey stick to commemorate your fifteen hundred dollar uh raising i got one of those last year it's really cool and it's signed by eric lindros there you go wow yeah so everyone make sure adam hits 1499 please because i do want to play and actually if you're listening and you haven't donated yet Donate to Jesse
Starting point is 01:50:09 And that's it No Jesse or Adam Because I am at Close to $8,000 By the way If I alone was a team I'd be in first place Our team is at just
Starting point is 01:50:23 A hair under $13,000 Hopefully by the time The show is up We're over $13,000 I think we're gonna get Overtaken By at least a couple teams One because we're gonna
Starting point is 01:50:35 Split the money in half Because we have so many players That we have two teams registered But also The other teams have like Corporate backing And like at the last minute They're like
Starting point is 01:50:45 Here's $10,000 And stuff like that Hey Scotiabank Gave us $20,000 How did we do that? Something like that Oh Chevrolet Just had all this money
Starting point is 01:50:54 In their couch And they just Yeah So We should call up Aaron Woodford Or whatever the one In Whitby was
Starting point is 01:51:02 That I went to the other day To have breakfast With Eric Lindros I had breakfast With Eric Lindros It was great He was just walking around Shaking hands with everyone
Starting point is 01:51:10 He had the big B With the big E I No Nobody calls breakfast The big B yet I just did So it was the
Starting point is 01:51:18 Captain's breakfast So all the captains Of all the teams went And Eric Lindros Is obviously there And there were some Kids from Easter Seals And parents of those kids
Starting point is 01:51:27 And we all had Breakfast together I barely read the email That they sent So I knew the time And place And there was free breakfast there i'm like great it's down the street it's free breakfast here's where it is
Starting point is 01:51:42 here's when it is that's all i need to know and it was a hot day so i put on some sneakers i put on a pair of blue shorts and my blades of steel t-shirt and i walk in and everyone there is in dress shoes dress pants and a dress shirt and some of them even wore a jacket
Starting point is 01:52:07 including Eric Lindros who just looked at me and went blades of steel nice I like that he called you out on that that's awesome
Starting point is 01:52:17 why do you always do these things I don't know and then what was great was great is they called up all the captains on stage to select their jerseys yeah
Starting point is 01:52:27 And guess who got to go up first Because of the top fundraiser Dammit The guy in the shorts The king in poppers clothing Stephen Dangle How are you just telling us the story I forgot
Starting point is 01:52:41 Alright so let me Let me also That's so amazing Lindros is great Would you like to know Who the Toronto Sun Thinks eight potential destinations are From William Nylander
Starting point is 01:52:53 Oh my god Via Michael Trakos Did this just come out Yes and I'm not even going to let you answer that question. Yes, you do want to know. And we're going to start with the last one on the list, but the first one in my heart. According to Michael
Starting point is 01:53:05 Trakos, Nylander adds to a very solid Vancouver roster. What could Vancouver offer? This is a tough one. Chris Tenev, who played alongside Riley at the 2016 World Champions, might be too old and too banged up. And seventh overall pick Quinn Hughes has far too much potential to give
Starting point is 01:53:21 up at this time. Would the Leafs want to take a chance on Oli Levy, the fifth overall pick from 2016? Or eric good branson could be a starting point and an ending point mike they also say the rangers could be one if they want to get rid of kevin shattenkirk's contract or brady no brady shea you weird okay the islanders we're not we're not trading them for a healthy scratch islanders have two blue chip defensemen noah dobson and bode wild or maybe ryan pullock um or matthias ekholm from from uh from the nashville predators
Starting point is 01:53:55 I'd entertain the Islanders idea But I don't think they would Or Adam Larson from the Edmonton Oilers Stop it right now you're kidding You're joking Panarin from the Jackets Or maybe Zach Rowinsky which you know I wouldn't hate
Starting point is 01:54:11 I wouldn't hate Zach Rowinsky What did you just do to my wallet I was just looking Cause you got the cash strap and I got the money clip And I'm very happy Brett Pesci from the Carolina Hurricanes Okay Yeah.
Starting point is 01:54:24 And who else? Oh, that's it? And Jacob Chikrin from the Arizona Coyotes. Yakub. Yakub. No, it's not. It's actually Jacob. Yakub.
Starting point is 01:54:35 Yakub Chikrin. Anyway, long story short, if Nylander gets traded, it'll be for less than Nylander. Just keep that in mind. There was one thing before the show you were reading about Duncan Keith, and I told you to hold on to that because I had something related to that. From Scott Powers. and we can end the show with this
Starting point is 01:54:53 actually I'll look at my reddit the reddit Scott Powers let me pull him up Powers what's his thing from the
Starting point is 01:55:03 oh he's got a weird one Scott Powers athletic there he is by Scott Powers so it makes him basically impossible to find on the search
Starting point is 01:55:12 great way to go Scott so here's the thing one of his powers isn't social media savvy we just learned why are you so yelling
Starting point is 01:55:20 I don't know The coffee, man. The hysteria about finding Scott Powers. I haven't had anything setting you off to that. Only a levy. I forgot Tim Hortons is just rocket fuel. I haven't had Timmy's in a while. I've been just mostly making fresh pots at home.
Starting point is 01:55:39 It didn't affect us the same way it affected you, I don't think. All Adam was doing was searching and coming out on Twitter. Scott Powers! Jumping Jehoshaphat! You don't say. So the article is Brent Seabrook, Nicholas Chalmerson, Nick Letty, Jordan Nosterly, and Brent Sopal share what it's like to play with Duncan Keefe. Now, with Chicago being pretty good, well, at least Jonathan Tays is pretty good.
Starting point is 01:56:08 Yeah. Their big guns are firing. Yeah. Keefe in the Leafs game was bad. He was bad. Straight up bad. I just thought it was like, I'm like, that is a weird time to put this out. Like, I would have thought that that would have been a Midsommar article.
Starting point is 01:56:23 Now, there is a specific reason that that is out. Okay, why is it? Duncan Keith will play his 1,000th game tomorrow night. Oh. Now, I wanted you to bring that up so I can bring up this about Duncan Keith's 1,000th game. Okay. We may have finally found a logo to commemorate a dumb event that's worse than the Derek 2 Jeter logo. We're too pegged.
Starting point is 01:56:49 Ritubex logo. When you respect a player, you let them know that you Ritubexed them. Because Duncan Keith is number two. He's number, yes, yes, he is number two. So are they using his number two in something? No. Duncan Toupexed. But they are using the 1,000th game.
Starting point is 01:57:13 And the fact that his defense partner, Brent Tuibrook. No. His initials are DK And 1000 is 1K Is it a barrel with a red DK on it
Starting point is 01:57:33 They have, the Chicago Blackhawks Twitter Tweeted out and they've changed their Logo to this It is the Dick Logo D1K DK1K But it spells dick.
Starting point is 01:57:54 And this is all over the Chicago Blackhawks Twitter. And I noticed it just before we went on. It's amazing. So hold on, hold on. Is there a profile picture of dick pic? This is it. It's a dick pic. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 01:58:05 That's a good one. Okay, all they got to do to make that logo all right, I think, is connect the one and the K. Oh, yeah. You have to put D-I-K or D-1-K. But it looks like an I because it's a one. oh no okay what is their first tweet with that logo i need to read the replies immediately it's all i need in life that is uh how did we miss that thank you jesse jesus new hashtag new profile pic hashtag dk 1k now wait no wait wait wait wait
Starting point is 01:58:39 that's a good ratio 87 retweets 493 likes 90 replies tony x yes with the the gif how would you describe uh the little kid who's holding the cup and he's looking and there's that little girl next to him and he has the shifty eyes isn't that the one where it's like i found terrio and this This random kid is like, I, what? He's like, I love Tony X. That one's pretty funny, too. Mike Blake McCurdy. You really didn't get this, though.
Starting point is 01:59:10 How about we read one out, guys? Yeah, I know. I was looking. Then there's the dick in a box gif. Why are you yelling? I was looking! Some poor kid is going to be sent home from school for wearing this on a shirt. As stupid as that sounds.
Starting point is 01:59:27 They better, if they give out shirts tomorrow night, and everybody in the crowd gets a free dick shirt. They're going to hand out 20,000 dick shirts. And there'll be 20,000 fans with dicks on their chest. Oh, no. There's nothing just to, anyways. Chief, is this it? No.
Starting point is 01:59:50 Oh, no. You had a good run, but we're laughing at you now. Worst decision. That logo or the Brandon Sod trade? Ooh, that logo. That logo is the worst. That's worse than the Brandon Sod trade. Is it?
Starting point is 02:00:05 That logo can't play fourth line for you. They're not going to give that trade away to 20,000 fans tomorrow night. Oh, my God. Oh, that's so... So, I think that beats... Does that beat Ritu Spex? Oh, that's so much worse than Ritu Spex. I can't believe that's a thing.
Starting point is 02:00:24 Could you guys talk about that on Tim and Sin? No, I saw it before when I was sitting in here. Oh, man. That's amazing. How would... That's interesting, because Tim and Sid are on television. Yes. So how would they discuss that?
Starting point is 02:00:35 Can they just be like, it looks like it says dick? No, they wouldn't say the word dick, but they would show it, obviously. They'd just be like, what does this look like to you? It looks like a D1K, Sid. I don't think it's disgraceful. I don't think it's a terrible... We did run the Derek Lewis clip of him saying, my balls are sweaty. You said my balls are hot.
Starting point is 02:00:57 My balls are hot. My balls are hot. Oh, my bad. I got the wrong term. No, G for his balls. How dare you? Joe Rogan. I understand.
Starting point is 02:01:07 That was great. Do we have any questions on the Reddit page for the press conference? No questions, but one note. Oh. From Kiki Flowers. This person points out that. Is the question, do you love me? Sorry.
Starting point is 02:01:20 Oh, no. When Seattle becomes a franchise in 2020. The Leafs will most likely lose Garrett Sparks. So there you go. Okay. Let's start talking about that now. Chief, is that it? That is not it.
Starting point is 02:01:44 It could be it. You know, I'm going to go home and read this new cool BuzzFeed article that just popped up on my Twitter account, which is 23 times movie characters got called the fuck out. That's That's a That's a That's how we're ending Oh my god
Starting point is 02:01:58 Oh hockey cards Oh hockey cards 23 kids You guys want to know What a great character This is like an 8 hour show And we all need to sleep When Vivian tricked Al

Starting point is 02:02:53 For sure That's where I'm leaning Fleury beat Fleury's so good He beat Couture From the bench In 2016 By the way
Starting point is 02:02:59 Is Fleury Is he a Hall of Famer? Yes Oh boy This is a conversation For He's Yeah
Starting point is 02:03:05 He'll end up being In the Hall of Fame Where is he on All time wins? We have to look up numbers He's like top 20 Oh yeah He's high
Starting point is 02:03:12 Chris Osgood Is not in yet But he will eventually Get in If Chris Osgood is in Marc-Andre Fleury's in Has to be in Okay
Starting point is 02:03:20 If that's how it works Jesse I already won this one no competing with the guy who is better than conor mcdavid and who will put up 168 goals this season austin well i already know i'm gonna lose to jesse because my card is patrick liney not as good as malley no because he should have well i don't even know what i have i have an nhl All-Star card With Austin Matthews
Starting point is 02:03:52 But it's less good Because it's the NHL All-Star game And nobody cares No but You're the All-Star version I'm the Superstar version Yeah I go with the Superstar
Starting point is 02:04:00 Do we tie? Your card's shiny And yours is actually a stat Mine's just like Hey we did an All-Star game once So you win that I have Noted
Starting point is 02:04:10 Former Montreal Canadian Alexander Galchenyuk I have noted former Montreal Canadian P.K.
Starting point is 02:04:22 Subic oh wow Pernell Carl everybody Pernell that's a good one I have winner of the
Starting point is 02:04:29 playoff series against Pernell Carl captain Blake Wheeler oh another young player that
Starting point is 02:04:37 Peter Chiarelli frittered away damn you're right too fifth overall pick Blake Wheeler no one remembers that ah imagine that
Starting point is 02:04:44 Ty that's It's tough. Adam does make the argument that Blake Wheeler's team beat P.K. Subban's team. However, has Blake Wheeler ever won the Norris? No. He's not even a defenseman, so how would that happen? You know what?
Starting point is 02:04:59 It never stopped Brent Burns from entering that conversation. It's true. So I guess what you're saying is Blake Wheeler isn't good enough. Yeah. I'd love Patrick Laine and Blake Wheeler would lose our – Winnipeg fans are going to freak out on us for this. You know what? Galchenyuk hurt the
Starting point is 02:05:16 Canadians locker room Suman did the same Blake Wheeler Captain and leader I think you win I think you win that one I think it's a three way tie He wins the grit chart
