I'm rooting for the wildcard team.
Really?
Going into the finale, I'm rooting for maximum chaos.
I'm rooting for an offside to decide the Stanley Cup final.
I want the wildcard team to win.
Jesse loves when the host team wins the Memorial Cup.
Yeah, the team that didn't earn their spot.
Let's go stag it off.
loves it yeah so here's the thing everybody has been pushed to their limit physically mentally
and emotionally except for the wild card team who got a nice little break uh relationships will be
forged and crushed and alliances will be made and broken and in the end they rise or they fall
together and the end is now available on cbc gem check it out right now for free on the cbc gem app

virtual 5k that's right somebody suggested i thought it was really good that you should do
your 5k with a metal detector on the beach looking for your wedding ring yo that's an incredible
Does anyone have a metal detector?
5K of metal detector searching.
I was jorting around that lifeguard thing that I jumped off of.
That's where I left the damn ring.
And you got to do a barefoot, obviously, because it's the beach.
I'm in.
And then I'll watch them afterwards, just for extra.
In the ocean.
You have to raise money.
You have to donate money.
Like a duck in an oil spill.
Caress them gently.
I'll just get that palm olive out.
It's good.
It's good.
So listen, some breaking news last night.
Big breaking news.
Bigger, perhaps, than soapy feet.
perhaps why don't they call it i guess i guess the new name for the site is caps friendly
yeah no more like cap sellout yeah you know what i mean cap friend i mean every internet user who
doesn't know how things work cap friendly uh has reportedly been sold to the washington capitals
caps friendly you get it you see yes uh now this is not the first time this has happened if you
remember our good friend uh tom parashka ran a site called general fanager yeah and he sold it
to the vegas golden knights and what happened what happened what happened stanley cup finals
appearances in six years one of them was a win instant success i saw so many people go why would
the capitals do this as if the vegas golden knights aren't currently stanley cup champions
yeah like guys come on come on i know listen i'm gonna miss the site too i'm sad about it
happy for their success yeah well and i i i everyone cheers for your success until you
actually find it you know well i i was really surprised by the amount of people who are like
i don't like this like if i would never sell okay yeah you would yeah you would and even if you
wouldn't and you would have done it for less here's here's the thing even if you wouldn't
just be happy for people they can make their own decisions and they don't really need your
input on that i'm i'm those guys that ran that site uh we we saw them in nashville we've been
in touch with the cat friendly guys for years and they are kind professional helpful they are on the
ball all the time and whenever we reached out they've always been there to help so for me
i'm thrilled for them and and they deserve all this success and good look at them they get to
go work for an nhl team well and you know what what they used to do because remember they wouldn't
get uh they weren't able to get credentials yes so they remember that they would show up to the
draft the three of them i think in full suits blazing hot nashville remember and uh they would
all show up with their laptops and they would update the site from their seats that they bought
in their suits yeah and they were at our event last year too yes they were they were in the
corner very nice guys but they barely talked to anybody because they were on their phones the
whole time trying to update the site they were yeah which was amazing it was always it's like
okay we have 10 minutes set aside to socialize and speak to other humans yeah and then they would go
right back to running one of the most important websites in hockey and that's that's why people
are sad about well i think i think it's okay to be sad about that and also not say you bunch of
sellouts like yeah just just man let people do something good that's good for them and you know
what there are other sites available and we'll shout out our friends at pugpedia who are another
that's another great site that you can go to that not for sale from what i understand so well and
and you know it's funny they i think they used to be a part of the nation network and now they're
independent again or i don't really understand how all that worked but you know what i'm seeing
is is some people saying it's not as puckpedia is not as user-friendly or whatever uh as cat
friendly you know that was the people forget and maybe it's because you got to talk to us olds
but that was the complaint when uh cap geek uh stopped operating and then general manager took
over cap geek was the original one it was i want to say it was it was cap geek that was the original
then general manager and a really early stage cap friendly were going at it and i remember people
being like well neither of these sites are even usable and i don't know i didn't mind them well
they got better no they were good but we were used to cap geek which at the time was a preposterous
standard and and who uh what was the story there matthew west right um unfortunately passed away
and uh you know it was it was the the first site of its kind that i can that i can think of there
were others talking about oh i ran something like this or i started this in 2006 or whatever
i wasn't familiar with it it was the first big site of its kind um with the salary cap general
fanager took over went away uh and that was messy too because supposedly they were going to go to
the nation network and then they ended up going to vegas a decision that i don't think they regret
on account of they have a stanley cup ring now um cap friendly it took over dominic's rim um
who uh founded i believe cap friendly worked for uh the sharks worked for the blackhawks
um i assume they're going to work for the capitals now i don't know how that works actually
because the last few years to my understanding while doing work for those two nhl teams uh they
haven't been running the site it's been the davis brothers yes um so but it might still be an
investment or whatever and we don't know might still be i have no idea and now um we still have
puckpedia yeah so i mean none of this would be a problem if the nhl just did it themselves well
that would be a problem yeah because the nhl uh the nhl doesn't i think it's this type of site
can only really exist outside of nhl.com would it because it would require well i don't know if it
would be illegal it probably yeah salary disclosure is probably not something that they're technically
allowed to do i mean it's like sports net listing but you're talking about website one of the one
of the things that like nhl.com can't do is they can't break news they have to wait until the team
has announced it and then they can write a story about it so um you know a team like the islanders
you just get a bunch of dashes like you wouldn't get anything you need you need reporters on it
you need it to be private uh or part of a larger network um because the nhl has no impetus to make
a site like that good or work or be updated right whereas a site where which can draw a bunch of
clicks the way cap friendly and puckpedia do um have the opportunity to make some money off of
that where the nhl they don't know that's not their core business they don't care like look
at nhl edge it's kind of useful kind of it's it's fine but getting better it's getting better but
it's not what it needs to be and again that's not the nhl's focus you know adam one of us has been
very quiet and one of us knows i think perhaps more than two of us jesse blake uh you just
recorded the cj show yeah with cj and i believe this was a topic yeah it was and it's it was
cj's reaction to it was i think the appropriate one in that he's just happy i hate those guys oh
oh you know i think it was it's it's like hey we can this has happened several times with the
hockey community where we lose
the cap site that we had this is
this is just groundhog day again
and you're really happy for all the guys
that cap friendly who get I assume
some sort of payday and they get to
continue working in
the NHL like they get to go work for an NHL team
which is awesome but Jesse how does this affect
the meeps what is that
the me so the instead
of the leaves to me here I'll
do I'll tell you what I would do if I was in that
you're not in that situation I was
I asked CJ I was like a lot of the
outrage is people who think there's something nefarious done on the side of the capitals and
it's very it's very cut and dry like this is a shrewd business decision by ted leone's this and
and co like i'm not i haven't been a fan of how he's handled any of the arena situations in
washington at all but he's been a very good businessman in the media space over the last uh
his decades long run as a very successful businessman and this is just another competitive
advantage that he saw and apparently there were other suitors on on for cap friendly and they came
the table with some sort of the best offer the best situation and behind the scenes cap friendly
was working with nhl teams there were the like certain apis like they they link to back ends of
teams operations in in their that's how you make money right yeah so that they did work with nhl
teams and the reason this came to light that way it got leaked is because they terminated those
contracts so the teams that were working with cat friendly they got the notice that hey the
washington's gonna buy all of this information and that's gonna be shut down so this kind of
got leaked out and for them it's just hey hey good for you we'll all move on as a hockey collective
uh public and we'll find some other way to get salary information but right now good move by
the washington capitol shutting it down for everybody else not having the ability to access
it publicly we've seen lots of screenshots of there's one of is it dorian who's in his office
in in ottawa there's a screenshot of him using cap friendly on like a on a team photo which is
just cool because you know how far that site reached and and now the washington capitals
did something smart and they gain all the people there and the information so kudos to them and
kudos to the cap friendly guys for a cool moment yeah uh puckpedia is now gonna get a pretty big
windfall yeah excited for them yeah 25 is gonna be a big year for them yeah and if you're not
happy like you i think you nailed it with like hey cap friendly wasn't always the infrastructure
that we it is right now they built to this moment and puck beat is maybe it's not cap friendly right
now but now with all of this new traffic they can build to that and all of that new traffic is going
to drive revenues for them and they can add more features that you want and it'll be fine like
we're all going to survive this it's all right new features cap friendly we discussed hey it'd be
good if your site had this it'd be good if your site had that and then they added it to the site
which means if the Caps win the Stanley Cup,
I get a ring, all right?
What?
I want one.
Yeah, because I contributed like 0.0000001%
to that website.
So I want a ring.
That's how it works.
I'm like the black ace who plays five AHL games
and gets to hoist the cup.
That's me.
I want to get on the ice.
I think big congratulations go to those guys
for how hard they've worked
and how much understanding they've brought, too.
One of the things that I think,
you know if you have a reasonable reaction to this uh one of the things i think you're thinking
which is uh man i they really helped me understand this cap which is not easy to understand they did
videos they did educational tutorials and things like that that you know if you wanted to you could
look all that up and i wonder if that all goes away too probably and yeah the site's shutting
down yeah so like what the youtube videos though and stuff like that after free agency yeah so yeah
that's that's one thing we should note too they've committed to keeping the site open for draft and
free agency so it doesn't officially shut down until july 5th so you have until then uh to access
captain i saw some people go oh that's good of them and i'm like yeah it is well also the contract
probably their contracts probably go until after draft free agency as well with whatever teams that
they're that are using their service they can't just terminate it like that there's probably a
latency period like here's a 30-day termination but the public gets it too yeah i don't give a
damn about the team well i know but that's probably the main public yeah but they could
shut it down for the public is the point like yeah they didn't oh there's no contract with the
public like they could have kept it open for the teams and everything but the fact that they left
it open for the public is kind of cool so i understand there is cap friendly premium and
some people were griping about that i i don't know enough about it um but uh you know hopefully
everyone involved um is made whole or whatever is left satisfied i mean i mean i guess you're
not going to be satisfied because it's going away but good for them man like it's it's just
you know matt west when he started cap geek um was solo um cap friendly i don't know enough
about their humble beginnings but like they grinded for a number of years before the site
was like really relevant and tom paraska um who won a stanley cup with the vegas golden knights
we had him on our show in like 2015 or 16 he began the site to teach himself how to code
that's cool these are all like that's very cool great triumphs of hockey fans like these are fans
um who started something and helped uh the rest of us um you know this is why i keep yelling about
the league and i wish the league would do more um these are fans helping fans yes well and i think
uh uh i think it's it's uh again we we congratulate them and don't worry there's other sites doing it
too and as businesses grow it's funny they don't just start at 10 out of 10 great they have to
build up and sometimes you have to go back down and then you have to build up even more and then
you have like that's how it works i i wonder what this means for salary swish which i think
It's a good question.
They just started this season.
It's quickly capped.
If they're good at that,
I mean, isn't it funny
that Leonsis owns
the Washington Wizards?
Yeah.
If I'm him,
I want them both in the deal.
But who knows
if that's like a different arm,
you know,
and they leave that open
and eventually they sell it
to like the Raptors.
No idea.
Yeah.
But I don't know.
That's a very good question.
I wonder what happens to it
because it doesn't have
the notoriety
that Cap Friendly has
in the NHL space.
It hasn't gained traction yet
in the NBA space.
So we'll see if it lives
past uh this date yeah i uh um i can't remember what i was gonna say cool that's okay that's good
why don't we do the bet mgm big story and see how bad we did this weekend with our bets

The Florida Panthers were outplayed dramatically in the first period.
Let me run you through some numbers.
Out shot 13-4.
Out chanced 8-3, 5-on-5.
high danger high danger scoring chances were five to one in favor of Edmonton Bobrovsky was credited
with a goal 1.27 goals saved above expected in the first period alone and Florida went 10 minutes
without a shot wow so that's more slaps for Edmonton though I like this I should do this
during the season you should I need more of these people listening I have no idea yeah no it's okay
that's your fault for listening no i'm kidding we got uh i got my two mini jerseys and i'm
reenacting game one oh yeah no this is great excellent i think it's great it's great it's
great it's not slowing the segment down at all no so what i'm trying to tell you good good point
what i'm trying to tell you is that the fact that the florida panthers had a shutout had a clean
in soccer they call it clean sheet the fact that they had a clean sheet even after the first period
is a miracle and this is the definition people are going to say oh Edmonton didn't make good
on their chance blah blah blah this is what it looks like to get goalied if you ever need a
dictionary definition of what it's like to get goalied this was it and by the way stop trying
to be difficult about it that's a goalie game the like period end of story maybe it's not like oh
Edmonton could have had 10 okay but that's what happens Zach Hyman empty net he air mails it
That never happens.
That's a goal.
Adam Henrik and Ryan Nugent Hopkins each get a breakaway.
One of those.
One of those you would think goes in.
Goalies are allowed to make saves.
Shooters are allowed to score.
You'd think one of them scores.
And as I mentioned earlier, Nugent on the hash marks.
Was he the one who Bob did the windmill?
Yes.
I mean, give that one a 50-50.
Like, every 50-50, I mean, the Hyman one is more of a 90-10, went Florida's way.
Went in Florida's face.
But you're not going to take me off the fact that that was a goaltender performance for the ages.
Brodsky was incredible.
He was very, very, very good.
And that is sometimes all that you need.
However, I think based on, you know, the post-game comments, guys, and I think, you know, you guys watched it too and you did your stream, they got away with one.
oh 100 and they know it um and paul maurice was working on his stand-up bit and just having a
great time congratulating his son and winning the kelly cup with the echl florida everblades um
i was really impressed with the mindset of the oilers though after the game like well you know
this is the hockey gods paying us back for game six against dallas which i thought was funny yep
and just the truth yeah like you probably shouldn't have won that game against dallas
who cares you did um you know and what really was that you did more spectacular things than the stars
did mcdavid um just dumped gas on miro heiskanen and lit him on fire in front of a building of
thousands of people and wasn't arrested um he pulled off a move that you cannot usually pull
off on a player of miro heiskanen's caliber but he did it that night and that's all that mattered
uh in this game game one uh the Oilers were the quote-unquote better team I think being the better
team is the worst thing to be it's so like who cares you want to be the winning team who gives
a damn about being the better talk to any Leafs fan about being the better team it really matters
at the end of things you know I think the deserve to win a meter was like it was like eight percent
in florida's favor it doesn't matter i think going into game two you got to be a little concerned if
you're edmonton because of just the way sergey borowski played in that game but throughout the
playoffs itself they had a great graphic on the screen during the sportsnet broadcast if you're
watching up in canada uh where uh sergey borowski has allowed goals these playoffs he's allowed
zero goals to his five hole wow he allowed one goal to the left low glove and on the other side
low the low blocker he's allowed six goals and the other um 31 goals have come up high so you
can't beat him low at all and you watch those two breakaways both low pad saves beautiful stuff from
boroski so you got to be worried that he can just do it three more times so that he's been doing it
all playoff that's how you know he's dialed because that's what he's always done when he's on
i i can't remember who tweeted it but when he signed that huge deal in florida you know people
weren't just pointing out the age thing they were pointing out okay this is a goalie who excels
uh with his flexible lower body he excels blocking the lower part of the net he has had
frequent serious groin issues and you just gave him 10 million dollars times eight years or
whatever it was and the first few years of that contract sucked they were not good at all lost
job to chris dreger for a little bit yeah man and now the guy is 35 and playing not just great
he's playing sergey bobrovsky great like this isn't a flash in the pan this isn't oh the pucks
are just hitting him or the oilers aren't getting good chances um you know there was a little bit
more uh quantity than quality but they should have had at least as at least as many as the
panthers had no this is sergey bobrovsky playing well looking the way he looks when he's always
playing well and i worry about like giving the the panther like not giving the panthers goals
in a situation where like let's say that nuge one goes in yeah and it's it's one one or something
like that the panthers are going to play differently as if it's if it's not two not two
nothing so like we can't really predict what would have happened if the one of those goes in for the
oilers but the way the panthers played where they didn't play their best hockey but they have this
great goaltender if you're the oilers you got to say we played great hockey and we still couldn't
win right there's there's a bit of concern there going into game two cj wrote an article for the
athletic i encourage you to check it out about bobrovsky and his case for the hall of fame
because this is a multi-vesna winner um who had weird years where he was atrocious like bad really
bad and but you know and and again rolled into last playoffs not being the starting goaltender
and then really put on a performance for the ages once he got in.
And this year has been kind of more of the same.
If he wins the Cup, is he a Hall of Fame shoe-in?
And CJ's been mentioning it on the CJ Show a little bit.
And I'm starting to go, well, you look at his career achievements,
you look at the kinds of games that he wins.
Like last year when we looked at – what was it that Rod Brindamore said?
He's like, it doesn't feel like we've been swept.
Even though they were swept.
Because they outplayed them every game.
but Bobrovsky yeah and people like goalies are a part of your team yeah I have to build the team
with a great goalie and getting goalie I don't think is an excuse that's a part of the team
it's like oh we got outscored ah you know that's the thing the great goal scorer scored no the
goalie is also a part of it so if the Florida Panthers want to build through this strategy
where Borowski stands on his head like all power to them there there are three wins away from the
Stanley Cup in 1993 the Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup because of Patrick Waugh but you
know who should have won the stanley cup is the montreal canadians because they had patrick wa
on their team exactly like that's just how it works guys yeah if i had wheels i'd be a wagon
so uh the other thing i think we should we should talk about outside of brofsky unless you guys have
more you want to say is carter verhege leaves i don't know now first off when we talk about
carter verhege you have to spell it spell his name oh man v e r and now it gets tricky h a e
verhege uh g h e wow i was not i couldn't follow that yeah yeah okay you spelled right no no that's
fine don't ask me lutheranian verhege's 10 goals this season are one shy of matthew kachuk's team
record in a postseason set last year this according to the athletic it was his 13th career
go-ahead goal in the postseason that's the tops among nhl players since 2021 when he joined florida
and scored his first career playoff goal which was a go-ahead goal unbelievable it's funny you
start with verhege on that because my whole thing about that entire play is sasha barkov and the
outstanding playoffs he's had it like paul maurice is like okay we're gonna shut down mcdavid all we
he was one guy it's it's the bark off line you know we need bark off out there the outstanding
job he there turning defense into offense that they the admins always failed on that back check
the puck going in deep nobody could get it they couldn't get the puck there and or and then bark
off takes it goes right around mcdavid up the ice generates that scoring chance it leads to a gold
beautiful he's had one of the best playoff runs i think from like a defensive center standpoint
that i've ever seen like we gave um uh philip dino all that credit in that that playoff run
uh for for montreal yeah but what barkov's doing is like i think tenfold above barkov's i mean
dino was one of those guys where you okay you staple them to these guys and you try to prevent
them from scoring and that's all you do that's your only mission in life because remember i feel
like that line didn't score very very much Barkov it's like okay you do everything yeah you have to
do everything if all the Panthers did was staple Barkov to guys and cancel them out Panthers
wouldn't be here right now they'd lose um but he's scoring he's generating offense uh I've never
like I'm sure this has happened but it's not like I watch every single Oilers game I've never seen
mcdavid go oh and have to like scamper back and then not get there and not be able to do it beats
him to the other end of the ice the panthers are too good like borowski gets so much credit in that
game and like i keep saying goalie is the thing like you can just rely on your goaltending but
it's the other aspects of the game that they're able to capitalize and be so good at and this
first shot of the game you'll get a goal like that on a great defensive and then offensive play by
you're captain yeah like they're too deep this this is uh what i was trying to say in my cup
check video um where i do an lfr style video after each game um like with uh with um i forgot what i
was gonna say i completely forgot this is the second time today that's good that's good you
were talking about barkov you were talking about shutting down mcdavid you were talking about going
end to end has that triggered anything no okay well maybe if it comes back you can come back
with it but um where are we talking about the bark off yeah we're talking about the play and
i was talking about carter verhege and oh here it is may um so both uh god that's pathetic uh you
know so the oilers probably should have won that game panthers didn't deserve to win that game
whatever whatever they deserve both goals they got like they were both fantastic goals it's not like
you know a goalie left his net no misplayed it whoops sam bennett on if we want the second goal
like i'm so happy you mentioned they deserve both goals sam bennett is the one who dumped the puck
in and then beat the defenseman on the ice for the oralist to the puck against the boards you
can't allow that in the stanley cup finals yes they they earned every single aspect of the ice
there you you could you could argue darnell nurse i mean should have had his stick on the ice and
then that would have prevented also on hyman yeah it it would have prevented the puck from ever
ending up on evan rodriguez's stick but like i don't know in nurse's defense like that's a play
that shouldn't have even got to that i do want to say this like it shouldn't have got there that
evan rodriguez uh was well carter verhage and evan rodriguez two former leafs uh i know
let's make it about us total games played with the leaves zero yeah i think the leafs wouldn't
what was it with evan it was like they really really liked him and they got him in a trade
And then they're like, we're not going to pay you $2 million.
We want to pay you $1.5 million.
And he's like, okay, I'll go make $2 million.
He's still only making $3 million.
Yeah, he's not making a lot.
Dubas was smart to get him, just not smart to not qualify him.
He didn't qualify him.
Dubas was the best in the world at getting guys,
but then not sticking with them.
Except for the wrong guy, Dennis Malgan.
Let's go to, no, we'll let him go to Switzerland.
He'll come back.
Do we want him back?
Yes.
well and then you think about too like the blown jared mccann thing oh okay you're you're using
this guy to pass through the expansion draft that he's gonna go to seattle but like maybe if you
just looked at it that was the guy you should have kept instead of justin hall and all that
how about the zach hyman trade florida drafted him it's like one of the biggest it's certainly
one of the biggest fleecings
for like
in the Leafs favor over the last like
several decades
and you turned it into like an
all-time fumble for the franchise.
I don't give a damn if it's revisionist.
It is. It's 100%
revisionist because I remember they're like, oh yeah
Hyman's going to get five and a half and I went, oh
shit. Yeah, nobody thought it was going to
be this. No, but
who cares? Who cares? You
got it wrong, obviously. Can we do
the Sam Bennett goal?
just sure on our stop by stop uh screenshots oh i forgot what i was gonna say sorry when sam
bennett's and the evan rodriguez goal that oh sorry bennett does most that sam bennett just
creates because i think the the point to illustrate here is that everybody loves talking about sam
bennett as i'm gonna punch you in the face guy look at the shots the shots are 13 to 4 at this
point but sam bennett is the i'm gonna fuck shit up i'm gonna be evil on the ice but he's also a
very skilled hockey player and he does things like this where he's entering the zone here he's about
to cross the blue line and four edmonton oilers are currently ahead of him and ahead of the puck
he dumps the puck to the boards and he beats them all to the puck and in one oh who's that defense
pairing steve jesse that's that's nurse and cc if it adds up to 30 get it off the ice
so he goes through the four of them beats them all to his own dump in and in the same move
gets the puck to evan rodriguez it's it's a beautiful playoff style goal and i don't know
i just want to credit him for having the skill to do this can you go back to when the puck is at
the blue line yeah yeah they're so he dumps it in right there yeah good coverage there too yeah
and they blow it for a dollar name a bent knee well nurse for a dollar name a bent yeah nurse
nurse is the only one like skating but nurse nurse puck watches and you can see him he like
apologizes to his to the guys on the bench like he yeah absolutely was puck watching yeah but it's
you know these playoffs more and more you know i'm understanding defense as a team concept
the panthers get it nurse wears the goat horns here and everyone's i mean kind of picking on
him and everything chris pronger had a funny um clip i think from the cam and strick podcast where
um where he's like yeah everyone's ripping on nurse he's in the stanley cup final
you know like and i understand why he's looking at it that way but there were
adam doesn't like that at all no no no no listen i've been a nurse defender all right i've been
one of the few no oh i don't i don't like when people are like oh when you rag on somebody's
goal and they're like that's it they're in the show they're a professional athlete i'm like but
i'm i'm judging them in the context of what just happened it wasn't a good play no but i keep
looking at it and i like i watch every game because because i go okay yeah he can't be
terrible though they're in the cup final and then i watch i go no no no he's bad well listen
you know what i mean it's like it's like good people do bad things from time to time right
good players do bad things good good players have bad players yes absolutely but but uh this play
though even though it ends with a mistake from him um it happens long before that and also you
where's the mistake i'll show you the mistake with nurse the mistake is you're all ahead of
yeah because i don't see this that is agreed this is the mistake by nurse it's egregious
see so this got him or is that mcleod that's mcleod so they got cc mcleod to the left what's
nurse doing nurse nurse's job he's for anybody listening nurse was in front of the net and sam
bennett sends the puck through the front of the net and it goes completely under darnell nurse's
stick right to evan rodriguez for the goal put it on the who's your man look at that who's your man
oh and evander kane is trying to get there but can't get there why is bennett the first on this
that's that was that one because it's cody cc man play by bennett is where i'm giving the credit
because it's cody c and sam bennett yeah and he's outmatched and he's always been outmatched by the
way this is the thing nurses play instantly got better when they put him with kulak i guess so
nurse put your stick on the ice but also like where's he going yeah it's just it's just bad
one more angle where's your man oh skinner automatically at church like like it's just
there's a lot of mistakes there's a lot of mistakes you can you can point out that's a good
way to put it yeah well i like that the game wasn't on a sunday but it ought to have been
yeah rodriguez i mean just heads up there's no reason cody sees he couldn't have been the first
person on that puck no no you're absolutely right and listen okay fine he misses the puck but if he
has the man it doesn't matter how about here back up what about kane on rodriguez like everyone on
ice but i just told you defending nurse by also criticizing him kate yeah for a dollar name a
bent knee but again steve that's not kane's man yes but we we've talked about this right like well
it was actually supposed to i don't give a shit he's right there he's right there for a dollar
yeah there's the every i think everybody on the ice awful yeah for the edmonton rose in this one
play that i want to give credit sam bennett for making yes yeah it's a it's a high you know what
that is that's just a high people oh it's a high skill play no high iq high intensity high effort
here's a guy who gives a fuck yeah he cares oh yeah that guy was like i am getting it it's mine
yeah and and and i i i appreciate that about sam bennett's game listen i don't love uh i i have
more of an issue with nick cousins to be honest with you because he's a rat and he just kind of
comes in pokes you and then and then he's like he's not even playing no he's not i i sam bennett
obviously has his but sam bennett's a great player sam bennett was a fourth overall pick was he not
he was so like this is a good hockey player who had a bad run in calgary and look at what he's
done since he went to florida it's been amazing my point here is um uh that is a guy who and i
look at this as a leaf fan imagine how depressing if you're not a leaf oh it's so depressing i don't
see guys that aren't a roster that can do that or that will do that they don't have a single player
except for willie that guy's yeah willie will do it it's it's a it's a guy who's like i am i am
taking this so screw off well i mean anyone it takes a special type of person to look like a
civil war general um like i i don't think you can be a soft player with that beer who's more of it
ekholm or bennett who's more civil war general oh bennett yeah and it's the mustache yeah okay
fair enough ekholm's looking good though one of the things that jesse tweeted on saturday night
and i was screaming it at my tv and then i saw his tweet and i was like ah i feel better
is why did edmonton go back to car darnell nurse and cody cc and i can tell you from doing two
rounds of the oilers that they're bad together they're real bad and i felt bad for nurse when
he took a lot of crap because i'm like look at who they're pairing him with this poor man
like it's like morgan riley man his defensive metric sucks who are his defense partners it
was like and guess what one of them is cody cc well you didn't yeah there was that you didn't
have to hate riley you didn't have to hate brody them together was horrible yes and you don't have
to hate cc you don't have to hate nurse together they're horrible horrible so here's here's what
happened and what changed in that series was they started sitting vinnie day rna yeah they split up
nurse cc and they moved kulak up with nurse on his offside this is what was said uh i think
daniel nugent bowman had this uh there were a couple of factors in the decision to put the two
of them back together for one kulak said he didn't like the way he was contributing on his weak side
okay fair does the coach also coach knobloch said saturday he felt that edmonton didn't defend well
enough uh in the clincher against the stars well okay so hold on so hold on he kulak felt like he
wasn't contributing enough on his side what do the numbers tell you the numbers except for that
one game which by the way they survived that's a survive game yeah it's and those happen in the
playoffs to the best of teams yeah that's a survive game yeah you didn't like your game well
nobody in the oilers should really like game six against dallas none of them none of them should
like it except for the fact that they won good good for them bad game they won you don't then
instantly go back to the pair that you had to split up because they were getting caved by the
vancouver canucks it's also flawed logic because you you you look at that um you get caved in by
the stars and win and you go we need to make a change let's go back to the thing that didn't
work against vancouver we need to make a change because this is never going to work again
and then you look at game one against florida and you cave them in and lose and you go yeah but
that's never going to happen again now i understand what i mean yes like well if it's never going to
happen again then stick with what you had well and that's that's my point is out of maybe the
five or six games that kulak and nurse had played together there were really only one or there was
only really the one that stood out and the entire team was bad that night yeah the rest of the time
they were pretty good together and and and and i think this is where chris knobloch being a rookie
coach kind of comes into things because i've really liked the decisions he's made during the playoffs
it was a bold decision people forget calvin pickard came in and played two good games for
the oilers he won one lost another and and then and then stewart skinner with his like sub 800
save percentage knobloch's like no we're going back with stewart weren't they down three games
to two when they put Skinner back I think it was I can't remember I can't remember the Canucks up
in that series yeah they were up they were up it was like 2-1 or something like that it doesn't
matter regardless the point is I think it was 2-1 um Knobloch made that decision and it was a ballsy
call and he did it and he and it and it worked why are you consulting Brett Kulak about one bad
game where the entire team is bad you need to know as a coach that this player is going to that's
Great. The player's accountable.
Fantastic. Fantastic.
Great.
Brett, the rest of the games went pretty well, wouldn't you say?
Yeah, you should gas them up.
Like, okay, I understand that you feel that way
and your feelings are valid,
but here's why I need you there.
Yeah, and today we have new defense pairings
from the Edmonton Oilers
because the offense looked pretty good.
So Frank Cervalli tweeted these out.
Ekholm Bouchard, as you would expect.
Of course.
Kulak Broberg.
Broberg, I thought, was really good.
And yeah, I really liked him.
I liked his goal in the Dallas series too.
man he was uh and nurse day harney so day harney and nurse actually played okay together against
vancouver and they're both gigantic and then the third pair so kulak is back to his correct side
correct so i understand you're the head coach listening to the player being like i'm a little
uncomfortable on the right i want to go back on the left yeah but i don't understand using that
as an excuse to play nurse and cc you know i feel like it's fair from kulak to say that and for the
coach to adjust and but it's up to the coach to make that adjustment like this where you also
don't have nurse and cc together it's like okay right let's um there's an injury so you gotta
play at home with someone else who's it gonna be broberg you put him with broberg and you go what
that might suck and i go ah might like this this was my thing with the riley brody pair and people
go well what should they do instead anything else anything else yeah anything else okay okay we could
try this and this and this and this and riley brody and no we the whole point of experimenting
is you try to find what's good this look i got good news for you free space we already know it's
bad don't go to it yeah for now you have fewer things you have fewer decisions to make we
already know this one's bad you can't go to it well we could try uh nurse with kulak yeah you
could we could try a nurse with brobert yeah you could you never know it might work out we could
try nurse was easy no wrong try again anyone else this doesn't work evander kane is dealing with
some sort of injury through these playoffs that's why he's been a step slow uh sports hernia is
Because it might be something that's also undisclosed.
I'd believe it.
So, yeah, we're just unsure at this point.
But it might come a case, because he mispracticed today,
that they go with seven defensemen.
They're not going to.
Rashad just tweeted that.
They confirmed?
Kane's in.
Okay, so Kane is going to play.
Yeah.
He almost killed Sam Bennett, so he's still useful.
Yeah, that's interesting.
So then if this is the lineup confirmed, thank you, Adam,
then this will be Cody Ceci's first healthy scratching
in his tenure as an Edmonton
Oiler for it to come in
game two of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
It shows how much this means and
it's unfortunate for CeCe, but it's the way to
go. He had a couple of classic
CeCe shots in that game too,
where he missed by like eight, nine, ten
feet. It was bad.
He had a bad game.
And you can't have bad games
in the Stanley Cup final.
The Calgary Tower tweeted out
the Calgary Tower is a smaller looking version.
If you're from Toronto, it looks like the
looks like the CN Tower, but smaller.
It is a radio tower.
It was built for the Olympics.
Looks like a combination of the CN Tower and Space Needle.
Yeah, well, it's cool.
It's supposed to look like an Olympic torch.
And during Stampede, they actually fire up the there's
there's like these flames that come out of it.
So and when the flames are doing well, they fire up the flames.
Oh, yeah, the torch, right?
The Calgary Tower, just to be totally clear,
the Calgary Tower will be lit blue and orange on Monday,
June 10th for Action Anxiety Day and for no other reason whatsoever.
we've got love for our neighbors in the north and all across the province but no never that's
i like that i think it's fair it's a good tweet i think it's fair but no never give your social
media team a pizza day that's a good one yeah yeah and i think and i get it if you were like
you know what this is for the oilers the entire city of edmonton would be like we don't fucking
need it eat shit calgary tower so this i think is the perfect way to play yep yep
canucks fans got like a boston pizza to change their sign because the the boston pizza in bc i
forget where it was was like hey go oilers you know oh and they weren't listening listen i don't
think these canucks fans joined me on my streams but the the canucks uh descent into madness
after being eliminated by all the gazdic stuff it's the gazdic stuff what did he even say i don't
know okay i don't know and that's why i can't go after too hard but i didn't watch the podcast
the gazdic thing i don't even know but but like just the and it's not fans are going to be fans
fans are gonna be mad fans gonna be i don't fault fans for being fans i'm shocked by some of the
media they're shocked by how they're acting and it's like i i just and it's not because they're
bad people they're all really good people but it's like there is we're losing our minds here
you lose guys you got into the second round for god's sakes that's fantastic good thing to build
on for next year rah rah rah canucks you know what vancouver likes vancouver you know what they
don't like every fucking thing else it's it's i i've never like listen toronto gets salty we do
get salty sure but we usually get salty at ourselves it's inward hatred it's why didn't
we hey the leafs suck and we're just sitting here like yeah i know yeah we know man stop yelling at
me you can't yell that louder than i can they have their most successful season since their cup run
in 2011 and they're just flipping
everybody off like it's just
that's what
they should have their own category tower
this is this yeah this is the middle
imagine if they beat the Oilers
and they were against Dallas
the vibes were great they would have built the tower I just
mentioned and pointed it directly
uh friggin
it would rotate though
the middle finger tower
so they can flip off everyone fuck you Pacific
Ocean
if they were playing Seattle that
night they just rotate the middle finger around yeah oh i think we've come up with a great piece
of architecture absolutely listen you could go ahead and you could steal this idea it's a million
dollar idea i'm sure you'll get public funding it's a little bit more than that um i oh everyone
would be like take my tax dollars absolutely for this absolutely hey you want to build a new arena
go fuck yourself put it right on top of bc place oh or or rogers arena francisco aquilini you got
the money you got the money for the glove probably owns the real estate too yeah rotating middle
finger rogers shouldn't be allowed to sponsor the arena name of two western conference it's
annoying isn't it a rogers arena and rogers play screw that i know pick quick one i got one jesse
you and i had this conversation at the rogers center i don't like it yeah i had rogers sports
net on my on my phone on at that point wow that crazy i texted you with my rogers phone that's
on onto lte canada's fastest although that's under some dispute apparently i don't know um
so the calgary thing is i think is that was hilarious uh we did get some news uh because
we had a gary betman press conference now we son of a gun we saved i'm leaving having to watch
gary and bill and marty walsh was there too yeah as a show of force because in 2026 they're
definitely going to get along no i think marty walsh is being i think he's been really really
good but i think that he thinks that playing well with the nhl is going to get him negotiation
points and that they're going to come together and create this you know kumbaya cba and i don't
know if marty walsh is prepared for how quickly that wind will get cold no i i'm i'm reading it
a little bit more optimistically if you're gary betman you don't want the guy at the other end
of the table to be a smart guy and i don't think i i think donald fear was not a smart guy i think
he was a lazy guy i don't know if he was he was a smart guy it's a lazy guy lazy guy in that he got
paid for doing not very many things yep um so yeah but here's the problem even if the guy on
the other end of the table's dumb um if they're lazy you can't get anything done yeah i think
marty walsh likes to get stuff done so if i'm gary betman i'm like you know what it might be
trickier but at least he'll do stuff so uh the four nations cups official dates have been released
um and it will start next uh next year in lieu of the all-star game event wednesday february 12th
all the way to thursday february 20th canada united states finland sweden and bill bill daily
said uh two iconic cities montreal and boston will be the hosts he said we thought it was important
to have some exposure in canada did you what they can't even hide it they can't even hide it
what hide what the fact that we thought it was important to have some exposure in canada
yeah what do you think they're trying to hide well it's it's we we really didn't we it was
sort of like canada tap you on the head good for you you got some dates good for you that's what
it is absolutely i don't yeah i'm not taking it i think it's okay to involve what in canada why
did he need to say he didn't just say that guys i don't know how these guys operate i'm just saying
i don't understand now you yes you do no i honestly i honestly don't know what you're
saying is we felt like we didn't want to piss off canadian fans by not having at least a couple
dates that's what he's saying most of the games are in canada yeah most of the games are montreal
no okay so jesse's right but i don't know why so honestly i don't understand why adam's out
wait wait wait wait wait wait i don't like the way that jesse's right because like what are you
mad about but adam's right because like why'd you say that what do you mean by that i think
you're looking to end the something like a throwaway comment hmm no that's like someone
says something to you at a party and then you're like having breakfast the next day you're like
What do you mean by that?
Yeah, because you have anxiety.
Yeah.
Oh, damn.
It's been a while.
Booze blues.
No David Pasternak, no Leon Dreisaitl.
They said, we wanted this to be an all-NHL players tournament,
and these four countries fit the bill more than any others,
meaning that they couldn't fill out some of the other teams
if they were to come in.
Obviously, Russia, they could,
but Russia's banned from international competition,
except for the Olympics,
where they can be the Olympic athlete from Russia.
So you mentioned that before.
They're not in team sports.
like they don't have like because they are they are all over the olympics yeah they're like
individual athletes can like apply through something to get uh to go through the ioc and
compete in the olympics but they're not there's no team russia's in the olympics all right yeah
we'll see um they they were also asked about a few other things so uh will the nhl be addressing
the ltir loophole bill daly said a bunch of stuff and then said basically we have to wait for the
next collective bargaining agreement to approach that and thanks bill uh which is you know fair
um salary cap will be 88 million dollars which is a four five point four percent jump that's the
largest bump in uh league has enjoyed since 1819 when everybody thought it was just going to be
like this forever they projected it was going to be 877 so this is actually 300 000 higher than
you thought it was going to be which is good yeah because the 877 was the five percent jump but
they've gone even higher than the 5% because their revenues have been so good,
which is cool.
Cap floor is set at $65 million.
Man,
the coyotes would have been sweating,
dude,
the,
uh,
the Utah team,
whatever they're going to be called.
If you're a smart agent,
you are calling them.
First of all,
they have no defenseman signed,
not a single one.
And they have three reserve defenseman signed to contracts.
Next,
they need $22 million to hit the floor.
Oh my God.
Call them.
they want to make a splash i assume they got money to spend call them uh sean derzy uh is a rfa there
and alan made some interesting comments about that and oh did he danger provocatory you should
check it out um it's looking like too that um the league may there may be a surplus in escrow so
meaning so the players have a certain amount of money held back to make sure that it's 50 50 right
and the calculations have yet to be done but there might be a uh surplus where money is returned back
to the players which is which is crazy so not only are they going to get their money back it
might be more than what they what they held back which is i think great for them i know i know we
sped through the four nations face-off part but i think it's i think it's interesting i think it's
cool that they're going to announce the first six players on each team uh draft day um that'll be
fun uh to watch the unveiling of that and this is like this is the appetizer for the hopefully
schedule that the nhl gets on where it's we have they hopefully they form source out of some sort
of world cup that they can get the international bodies in on where it's like you know a real like
they have in soccer you know even like the fiba that the world championships that they have in
basketball you know and everybody's involved in that plus nhl players and they break every season
for that and then you have the two year or two all-star games in those four four-year periods
so hopefully it's something like all-star world championships all-star olympics and that's the
four-year rotation i'd love that that'd be so sick yeah like not having the reigning world hockey
champions sucks like it'd be good to come to some sort of agreement to involve them so i'm looking
forward to it um it won't be like it's not truly best on best we all know that but it'll be a fun
little break in the season which i think everybody will enjoy come mid-february and uh if you're not
a player associated you probably get a sweet vacation yeah which will be extended like it'll
be longer than the usual week and a half break yeah they they went because they don't want guys
playing too much it's going round robin they have the the four games in montreal then the three in
boston and then just the championships it's round robin eight games yeah you determine the top two
teams they play in the championship tournament over so we know that it's not gonna be this true
where you get the playoff single elimination like a one-time thing yeah it's it's more a lot cj was
making this point he made it so eloquently it's just it's more along the lines of the world cup
of hockey how we all think back on it and we're like a team europe was in the finals and some of
europe some of europe and it was in a two-game playoff with and canada crushed and canada beat
them and well the second game was an overtime but it was a sweep it didn't it didn't make it
oh no at last minute yeah last minute of the game or whatever it was i want to say it was a
martian shorthanded goal with like a minute left and then when we think back to that 2016 world
cup of hockey the thing we all rave about is the team north america they didn't even make the
playoffs no you know they were great though they thought they did on an aggregate they they missed
the round the elimination round but like so we don't look back on that tournament like you know
team canada they got that medal they got that trophy i feel like that's how cj made the point
this is how we're probably gonna look back on this tourney is like this one-off where
one of usa canada's finland sweden they win but it doesn't really mean anything yeah and the
olympics the olympics will be you know we're looks like we're back to the olympics and it looks like
they'll finally figure it out and do a world cup in between to you know every every four years so
in between the two olympic years so forgive me for being skeptical about well yeah but you were
you were skeptical about the cap uh all season yeah and yeah and it happened yeah for the first
time and i told you from last year it was going to happen because mathematically this is your time
to dance on steve i have been saying that adam i just want to congratulate you i've been right
20 of the time when it comes i have been watching salary i have not said that the cap was going up
in previous years when have i said that 2020 you were like it's going up no i did i made that up
i made that up i made that up i'm being a dick i'm being a dick you know steve you know yeah
Adam was right
He's like Jesse Jackson
In South Park
You didn't believe that
88 million was real and now look
It's even more
Oh no
No formal expansion process
Underway but Bettman continues to field
Expressions of interest which means
A formal expansion process
Is underway if he's listening
It's formal
Carter Hart, Michael McLeod
cal foot and dylan dubay who are all a part of the london 2018 investigation uh sexual assault
investigation um and and well i guess it's not an investigation anymore i guess they've charges
criminal trial yeah proceedings proceedings uh they're restricted free agents as of now the nhl
is leaving it up to the individual clubs to decide whether to submit those players as a
qualifying offer on july 30th if not they become unrestricted free agents betman is saying i'm
leaving it with the teams i didn't even think of that and you know fascinating gary is being
political about this the reason he's doing this is because he doesn't want to make the decision
for the teams because he's like i'm trying to let you do the the right thing and i'm gonna make you
make that him commenting on it i thought was just a lot of word salad they're going to not sign the
guy of course not they're all going to be free agents and then we'll watch how the trial plays
out like that's how it's gonna end yeah so i didn't think it was too uh crazy of a big deal
and if one of them does end up doing the unthinkable then it will be unthinkable we will
have to react to that play anyway yeah it doesn't it wouldn't make sense to sign rfas who can't play
for you um yeah wow uh uh marty walsh says that the pa wants to focus its attention sooner rather
than later on the next collective bargaining agreement current pact signed in 2013 and got
extended over the pandemic uh expires at the conclusion of the 25 26 season him saying
focusing in its attention to me means they're already focused on it marty walsh does stuff
i'm still adjusting to it i like him good for him uh i already mentioned about the ltr thing and
then people asked about stan bowman and joel quinville who have both requested reinstatement
from the nhl they were invited if you guys remember last september to talk to players
not players coaches and general managers and team employees about what they've learned from
the experience with kyle beach um betman says they are currently not eligible that's something
i have to consider which to me says i'm i'm not even going to think about this until next year
yeah i mean it's messy what what i would say is there are a lot of people who are like
why haven't they been reinstated uh and growing numbers i would say are saying that yeah but
But Gary Bettman is still like, again, completely just doesn't even seem to want to entertain the thought.
I'm wondering what we don't know.
Yeah.
Well, I think a lot.
Yeah, we already know a lot.
And you know what?
We don't.
I think ultimately right now it's the right thing to do.
It's the right thing to do.
You got it based on what we know.
Can't have it.
Hey, Steve, you've had a tough show.
How are you sleeping?
Poorly.

register today at pmcfwalk.ca so uh the leafs what are linkedin trade rumors i always love this
because because you can sometimes begin to tell based on the team don't you do it who's trying
to puff up the market on a player don't you do it uh and who isn't and in this particular case
they don't really need to but the leafs are linked to the calgary flame no nope along with
the ottawa senators no they're not and the new jersey devils i think the devils and senators
actually are yes they are uh it is funny when dave nona shows up in a city how leaky those
ships tend to oh isn't that weird isn't that weird but the leafs are apparently interested
in jake marks no they aren't now now steve um i will mention that earlier this year and you can
be forgiven if you don't remember this specific segment but we did talk about the fact gentlemen
that uh the calgary flames seem to be the lead off of every single 32 thought segment on a hockey
night in canada yeah uh and that is because they were trying to puff up the market on their players
yep and jake markstrom for my money can't go back to calgary he waived his no trade clause
they blew the deal to new jersey and he was super pissed and that was very public i think that
relationship is not irreparable but i think it should be probably close to over what's the issue
steve well how much did you like nikita zadorov as a leaf well dan milstein was the guy that made
me think zadorov was gonna be elite did you like him was he good did he bring a lot of snarl to
the back end how much did you like chris tan of his leaf oh loved him yeah how much like elias
who was a leaf loved him how much i mean linked to the leaves no but it's another former flame
um nope there's a ban i'm here veto gavel in my hand bank like you know how i banned uh gary
betman from the show i banned him he's not allowed i i hereby ban anything linking any flames player
to the leafs well i will band i am going to mention it cool and i'm gonna talk about the rumors
banned over you i think the flames are calling everyone uh and they're speaking out of school
and i don't think this comes from the leafs at all i think the flames are like the leaves are
involved and they're using the leafs because uh it generates a ton of noise um they are never
going to until they prove that they will until they prove that they will the calgary flames will
never ever ever make a deal with bradshaw living the background on this the background on this is
bradshaw living resigned from the calgary flames they wanted to retain him um and apparently uh
that pissed off don maloney who kind of runs things in calgary and uh i thought the gm ran
things in calgary no the gm does not run oh they haven't fixed that little uh kerfuffle
fix that little wrinkle don maloney would be the front office yeah so so that pissed him off and
then they were like well you can't be there for the first round pick on the draft floor um and
then i guess we're trying to use the leafs and this happens all the time in pro sports so i'm
not really upset about it all the time uh where you know you use a team to make another team give
you more but in in in actuality what happened with the flames and this is where it gets weird
is that the reported deal the package that the least were willing to offer for both tana and
zadorov turned out to be more than what they got from dallas and vancouver right so the there's the
price and then there's the leafs price nope done done any calgary uh just just like listen
who is it it was pierre lebrun and elliot friedman yeah those guys are good those guys are good and
they i they take the information they're given and they corroborate the information i think
calgary's feeding everyone bullshit now one thing that seems a lot more likely and this is something
i believe we brought up on the show before is goaltender laurent possois who's had a good who
had a good year in vegas and then had a good year in winnipeg and jesse you i think we were talking
about it um it feels like it was like a week and a half ago um and you said you thought you liked
this at the time if i'm not mistaken because you think that wool is going to be a guy who's going
to play probably 45 50 games yeah i think i think that's the plan right i think the plan is not to
have wall play 60 games or anything like that so you're if you trust joseph wall which i think the
organization does all you need to do is bring in somebody to fill in the rest of the gaps and you
just need a competent guy who's been a position before who can just hold the fort for the games
where you don't you don't have wall starting i think it's a it's a simpler easier off season
in net for the least than it appears on the surface okay brisoise are you giving well no i
got a point here oh this is why like when people bring up brossois they bring up stallers i'm like
yeah those are good goalies but i don't think that's necessarily what you need how many games
would joseph wall have to play to hit his professional career high probably like 30
uh so this year he played uh 25 games with the leafs then another three in the playoffs 28 and
one with the marlies 29 oh played 21 with the marlies last year and seven with the leafs that's
28 previous year four with the leafs 15 with the marlies 19 year before 15 and his career high
as a professional rookie in the 1920 season 32 okay so they need someone who can play at least
41 now but like the solution with joseph wall isn't to continue to play him 25 games i think
if this season he doesn't get injured he probably hits 40 plus i i agree with you i think they
probably have the same similar plan going in so we should expect joseph wall to take at least
43 45 of those games he's got to take a step yeah yeah he's got to take a step and i think
this year is going to be that year now brad trill living was quite public about the fact that they
want to work with him on whatever it is that's leading these injuries is the training is this
is it that and a lot of the time sometimes it can be like something stupid like change your
stretching and then all of a sudden you don't run into the same issues sometimes your body's
predisposed to it we're all built differently if you're up to and there's a second left just let
him score uh stop it breaks my heart uh he's just doing his job laurant the most games he's ever
played is 24 with the 21 22 vegas golden knights he played 23 last year with the jets and one
playoff game and the 23 he played this past year um 15 5 and 2 with a 0.927 save percentage and a
two even goals against average that's ridiculous great numbers very good and incredibly good with
the golden knights before uh similar numbers uh 927 save percentage in 22 23 only playing 11 games
but remember eight games played in the playoffs uh so this is a this is a goalie who i think a lot
of people would say this is a solid backup how old is he 31 31 and if you pair him mart apparently
martin jones has room has desires to come back to toronto yeah okay so if you pair him with
you do with a three-way tandem a random a random um and you you have to put something in martin
jones's contract that prevents teams you should put a six hundred thousand dollar bonus that's so
ridiculous you gotta do that for the for the for the waiver date or whatever it is like october
sixth or seventh or whatever it needs to be uh so that he makes it through waivers um and and
here's the other one that i wanted to bring up because you know the leafs one of the things that
a lot of people are saying they need is a goaltender um they could go and go get a guy
like markstrom and he could be great or he could be bad markstrom and there have been some bad
markstrom years miss the markstrom but if you have a guy like dennis hildeby who you probably
want to get some nhl action this year played 41 games with the the marlies 21 11 and 7 241 goals
against average 1913 save percentage he was he had a very good rookie year is that what you want
going into matthews and neilanders primes no but is that their best option gentlemen do you think
that's the best path forward if that's how the season ends so be it uh can't be how it begins
okay so you need you need either wall or you need another big acquisition you need depth
yeah you need depth there like uh the well i was thinking the four those four guys are depth well
the idea of um uh wool with uh like a brossois type and a jones yeah you could live with that
i know everyone wants a bigger sexier name there the leafs don't really appear to be in the market
for a bigger sexier name but the leaves being in on markstrom also doesn't match what true living
said at the end of the season at all now why do you say that uh because they talked about wool
they want joseph wool to be the future because when he's healthy he's friggin good markstrom's
got two years left on his deal does that not give wool a chance to fight him for that that that ice
time adam your your logic is making sense there but it doesn't match what they said the flames
are lying well until it might not be the flames that are lying it might just be reporting on like
the leafs called and checked in because the leafs like to they should do their job and do their due
diligence so maybe brad made a phone call to see like oh what's the markstrom stuff and people are
reporting that like the leafs aren't on markstrom when it's really just the general manager probably
not even him like the agm calling and being like hey what's the sitch with markstrom yeah i believe
they make i believe they had a conversation but i really i think the reporting has gone too far
it's possible um i listen the lease and flames might make a trade um and if they do i'll eat
my words and it'll be really funny it'll be a really funny bit for the show until then
pants smoking on fire okay fair enough and i and and understandably so now the utah uh franchise
smith entertainment group announced last thursday the choices have been narrowed down to blizzard
mammoth outlaws venom yeti utah hockey club or utah hc gentlemen i need your top three give me
your top three picks of the six oh blizzard mammoth outlaws venom yeti oh my gosh utah hc
what is it i need it again blizzard i'll text it to you how's that no just say it again i'm typing
blizzard yeah like from like yeah uh mammoth yeti outlaws outlaws venom venom and you got
yeti in there and then utah hc okay thank you number three
outlaws i like outlaws no number three mammoth number two outlaws red dead big fan get it
we should talk about that one day and number one yeti yeti i'm all in on utah yeti jesse blake
yeti is number one easy number two hc i like it people don't like it i like hc number three
is a close one but i think i'll go with blizzard i don't mind blizzard blizzard's kind of cool
plus it gives it great branding opportunities with uh dairy queen dairy queen it could be
the queen center i ran into a listener once at uh dairy queen and i bought his cone oh that was
nice of you man of the people just like if you run into me at a dairy queen i will buy your ice cream
for you um camping out of the one by your house okay here's what we got here's what i think okay
i'm gonna say i'm i'm with you guys i think yet he's number one yeah i think mammoth is number
two and i think outlaws are number three and mine are solely based on uh the mascot because we have
some good mascots in the east gritty i think is the best one gritty is the best mascot in the
league we need some competition in the west um the the the scary you know nightmare cat that
the oilers have hunter hunter the nightmare he's terrifying he's scary freaking terrifying i what
we need i'm thinking like monsters inc for the yeti you know that do you remember monsters inc
where they actually go and they and they meet the yeti and he's feeding them snow cones and stuff
like that oh yeah like you need something like that like that's like fun and big and crazy and
whatever so i think uh uh yeti i can see mammoth i can see right that would be hilarious like like
a snuffleupagus but a but a mammoth version and then outlaws uh because you know yeah cowboy
two guns but the mammoth's nose is a hockey stick there you go okay i don't know that that seems
like a really messed up i'm off of blizzard blizzards yeah no no i'm not doing blizzard
mammoth is my three you like this is too close to avalanche uh yeah i remember i thought about
this before and i was like yeah no blizzard so uh what's the avs mascot again i can never remember
uh a dog it's a saint bernard right do you remember the avalanche also had the uh yeti
jerseys the foot what yeah it's the no they had a little guy like the yeti guy on the jerseys they
have they had a third what yeah no yeah i'll show you they had a guy oh they did have a guy yeah
you guys don't remember that yeah but he was like the abs yeti jersey when on earth did they wear
that yeah hold on um oh and that's a concept isn't it look at the look at the other mascot too
howler howler was a yeti dude oh howler bring back howler why
there's a thread on our colorado avalanche on reddit that says bring back how yes they're
right how rules that's incredible look at that you guys like hockey
oh and that's horny bernie's the bernie's the one right the burn of the dog yeah the
st bernard yeah howler's way better uh yeah i agree well you know call yourselves the yeti then
and then you could take howler yeah just call them up and be like you guys have that heller
costume still right yeah if you don't want utah to call themselves the yeti because you had a
heller guy whatever call yourselves the yeti if not quit your freaking whining there you go call
around fair enough um a couple of things uh shark city hockey what is this shark city um
san jose sharks fans should expect macklin celebrini to return to boston university
for his sophomore season now i can't tell i can't tell if this is intelligent negotiation
for rookie bonuses uh or if he's serious about this uh he said it would be good so it would
just give me a little bit more time to develop.
There's never really shame
or there's nothing wrong with just taking your time
and improving, getting a little stronger,
getting a little bigger, getting a little faster.
So I feel like in those ways,
another year would benefit me
to get more physically ready
and just make sure I'm very fit and strong
when I try to make that jump.
I think there's a couple of things going on here.
First off, rookie bonuses,
make sure you get them, Macklin, okay?
Make sure you get them.
Get them.
Number two, the Sharks are doo-doo.
They're bad.
and why would he play for them right now they need to they need to assign some players that
can play hockey and they putting Macklin Celebrini into that I'm sure the Sharks are on board with
this sure they're like great cool we'll go back because we need another year we're not cooking
don't let us cook how many wins did the San Jose Sharks have 14 I'm guessing that's your guess
jesse 12 let's get maddie in on it maddie how many wins did they have
in the whole season yeah yeah like right
i'm gonna go a little higher 13 13 12 13 and 14 which one is it okay so you're all wrong it's 13
hey sorry sorry my bad it's 19 you just said i obviously am not crisp today um holy shit
just brutal today uh regulation wins they have what was i talking about i don't know
oh no oh my god thank you for downloading the show today big piece of shit okay but no they
had 14 regulation wins though um they finished last by a wide margin and they stunk they were
really really bad so i so i don't think there's anything wrong with going back to one of the best
hockey programs uh you can play in as a teenager exactly uh along the shark city shark shark city
uh joel pavelski will retire after 18 seasons notably and sadly without a stanley cup despite
some great runs with the sharks and some great runs with the dallas stars it sucks dude it's hard
it's hard i i keep saying this and i'll keep saying this and i wish other people would say
it because i feel like it loses some of its meaning when it comes from a leafs fan um you
shouldn't have to have a stanley cup to make it into the hall of fame no you know what i mean
nope well i think we're gonna have to get to the point where you don't well i mean there was a class
recently where none of the inductees had that was the turgeon one no it was the um both sedins
at luongo and i can't remember who else was in that class was it hank might have been lundquist
might have been like those are all all timers um especially the goalies yeah and dude it's
really really really incredibly hard here's what's nuts about pavelski retiring how many
points did he have this year uh 50 50 jesse just to guess 5050 i will not judge either of you for
not knowing this 65 67 wow 27 goals 40 assists now he didn't have a great playoff only four points
in 19 games but this is a guy who played 201 games in the playoffs over his career had 74 goals
i think i said this on the seizure show like last week that he's a hall of famer
and then someone was mentioned they're like the the case isn't as clear as you think okay i
understand that he's he's one of the greatest american players ever so just in terms of like
the hockey hall of fame aspect of you want people who are famous from hockey to be in the hockey
hall of fame like there's notoriety there on his abilities but there's no individual trophies
no um that which is a big thing uh never no stanley cup obviously and the points aren't
like so high and above that he uh he's a lock for the hall of fame if you go to his goals total it's
not even close to 500 how much is it no no it's close for 76 force okay 476 almost 500 career
goal 600 assists 1332 games played okay 476 goals 592 is this 1068 points the for me the playoffs
is what gets it done 201 games played 74 goals which is the top of his entire playing career
No one from the moment he stepped in the NHL until the moment he left
had more playoff goals than him.
69 assists.
Good.
Nice.
143 playoff points.
The individual trophies thing is fascinating.
The guy I always use is Paul Correa.
I think the number is 800.
No, 987 points in 987 games.
something like that and the reason i use him is because meh like would he have had a better career
if he never got injured yes yeah of course um he would have had over a thousand games in his sleep
would have had over a thousand points in his sleep played in an era that was more difficult to score
in um and was always one of the top guys he did have individual trophies i don't remember what
they were i know he's got a bing in there um and i know his playoff totals didn't touch pavelskis
so it's it's but he's in yeah i i personally think joe pavelsky should be a hall of famer
like i agree i'm giving the counter argument that i heard after i said on the cj show
and some of the guys around him on all-time points if you look at it like john tavarez
is gonna pass him like is john tavarez's current career a hall of famer claude geroux and he
doesn't have close to the playoff resume that Pavelski does yeah Claude Giroux is at 72 Joe
Pavelski is at 71 just for context um Ray Whitney is at 74 Keith Kachuk at 73 Joe Mullen 75 Eric
Stahl at 76 so these this is kind of the area in terms of points all time that he's at here's the
other difficult thing for the hall of fame conversation was Joe Pavelski ever the top
player in the league no was he ever top five no no was he ever top 10 no but he might have been
in the playoffs every particular year so his top year he had 41 goals 79 points 0 50 goal season
0 50 goals was he ever top 20 yes i think you probably make the argument and like maybe it's
peak season i don't know i don't have it in front of me like that sounds right well like this this
is what i'm saying like you're it's the hockey hall of fame there should be a bar yeah like
henrik lundquist never won the stanley cup did have the individual trophies was he ever the top
goalie in the league well yeah of course um luongo same thing was he ever like top or in the
conversation yeah paul korea was he ever the top player in the league or in the conversation was
he ever a top five player in the league during his career yes he was he was pavelski who i will
still fight for tooth and nail in these discussions nope not really how many how many
like 30 plus goal seasons did he have one two three four five yeah i i not i if you land on
either side of this debate out there like if you're on he's not a hall of famer where he is
i think there's a case for both sides and it just depends probably on the year yeah it depends on
how you look at it in like the history of the hockey hall of fame and who should be admitted
but if you don't think he is there's a solid case and if you do there is as well uh steve yes who is
the best seventh round pick of all time i mean it's pavelski wait wait was he seventh or sixth
seventh he was the seventh that's why i'm asking and i think i think pavel datzuk is another
zetterberg is oh it's zetterberg one of them was six and one of them was seventh i never
remember guess who's got more points no wow he beat someone though like joe velsky just played
longer right uh zetterberg played uh 1082 pavelski played 1300 yeah yeah but i mean but
but a seventh rounder playing 1300 games oh yeah yeah and like there's another guy where like
how many years out of their careers that overlapped was Pavelski better than Zetterberg
never Zetterberg was crazy yeah and if you look at his playoff stats in 137 playoff games Zetterberg
had 120 points so uh you're talking about and and but what I'm saying is that probably puts
him second that's kind of an accomplishment oh of course here can I can I mess up the whole
conversation sure so pierre turgeon was inducted into the hall of fame 1294 games 515 goals more
than pavelsky not much more 812 assists that's more um 1327 assists so he's got something like
250 points on him played half the playoff games at 109 97 points 35 goals didn't make it to half
the playoff goals individual trophies one 93 lady bing like not but you know what i mean so
like we that's you feels mean to diminish it feels mean to diminish but what's helpful for
the hockey hall of fame discussion is somewhere you got to find the worst guy to make the hall
fame yeah you know what i mean and it doesn't make sense and it's unfair to go back to like
the 20s 30s and 40s right the 60s and 70s don't apply because those guys most of them didn't play
nearly as many games so you got to go to a guy like turgeon and go is there an argument
that Pavelski was at least as good as Pierre Turgeon.
To me, yes.
Like, again, was Pierre Turgeon ever a top five player in the league?
I don't think so.
Was he ever top 10?
Was he ever top 20?
Okay, for how many years?
It's a fascinating discussion.
The playoff resume really jumps Pavelski up,
which is fascinating because he never won.
Moving on to the PWHL for just a second here before we get to our segment with the founder of Pride Tape, which we're very co-founder, co-founder.
Excuse me. I want to talk quickly about about Natalie Darwitz, who is a silver medalist at the Olympic Games, a bronze medalist at the Olympic Games and a three time gold medalist at the Women's World Cups when she played for the United States.
She is also the first general manager to win the championship in the PWHL.
And Jessie, she released a statement because she was let go right afterwards.
Yeah, we can start with the statement and then we can get into the more details that have emerged over the weekend around this story.
And it's getting very juicy.
So this was a statement she released over the weekend.
And I would like to thank the State of Hockey for their support of PWHL Minnesota.
As the general manager of the PWHL Minnesota, I gave my heart and soul to provide a first-class experience to the players, staff, and fans.
My goal was to grow the game of women's hockey and to show young girls their dream could become a reality.
I am very proud of the team and organization that was built and the championship we brought home to this great state of hockey.
At this time, I am not able to provide any details regarding my departure.
Thank you.
Interesting.
As classy as you can do it, still want to know why she was let go.
What do you got?
So the story begins a week before the regular season was underway.
The Minnesota team had a head coach.
His name was Charlie Burgraff.
and a week before the season he announced that he would not take the position anymore he would not
be their head coach and they had interviewed a number of candidates and they brought in one of
the other candidates they interviewed his name was ken clee and that decision to bring in ken
clee was not made by natalie darwitz the general manager because the league owns all of the teams
and they made the decision hey charlie's dropping out we're bringing in ken clee and now he's like
okay that's going to be our head coach and reportedly since he was named head coach and
for the entire season there was a riff between ken clee and natalie darwitz they did not get
along there was a lot of infighting it came to the point where uh some point near the end of the
season the pwhl reached out to a mediator and they was a third party i should say and the third party
said that they should solve this through mediation and the pwhl didn't want to go on that decision so
they made the decision to just remove natalie darwitz from her position they offered her
something else within the league but it came to the point where they couldn't work together
anymore so supposedly that's that's the case and uh there's getting you're getting some quotes from
people some some some angles from people within the team as well because kendall coin coin scofield
is the captain of minnesota and she was a large reason that the league exists you know she was
she was in the building of the league and she has reportedly taken the side of ken clee and that
she's been giving him credit for building this team and all of their success and winning the
championship and it seems like the league is sided with uh kendall and ken and they've decided to
move away from darwitz now we don't know what they fought about we don't know what the riff was but
from day one and throughout the season this existed and they moved on from natalie for that
reason wow why have general managers if you're not gonna let them hire the team's coach like
listen hindsight is 2020 they won the championship i mean i don't know if he's the best coach in the
league he did something right former leaf by the way can't clean um he must have done something
right um so did kendall and so did the whole team they won the freaking championship but um
i gotta tell you i hate this i hate this a lot um we like for years and years you know we would
talk about the cwhl and uh we would talk about whatever name the nwhl was by the end um do the
changed their name like it was so many times they changed it once and these guys hate each other
and these guys hate each other and no we don't hate each other and there's this riff and there's
that riff and the day before the clarkson cup is awarded in ottawa the nwhl um steals all the
women's hockey headlines by announcing that they're going to expand into toronto and montreal um
and you know all we i feel like when we talked about these topics on our show it was very often
with an air of this is juicy for sure and we got to talk about it it's hot gossip and all that but
like this friggin sucks like i don't know what this does to advance the women's game and now
here we are in this season that's been such a huge victory for the sport and minnesota wins
and it's such a huge victory for them and for the sport and we're like what a week two weeks out and
this is what we're talking about well and it's just frankenstein's monster i don't see it that
way i don't see it that way at all i disagree with you on that and i'll tell you why i'll tell
you why because it still is a great story and sure it doesn't mean they have the championship
taken away totally understand that totally get that and i i think my point here is that i think
this sets us up for uh her to make a comeback elsewhere clearly they removed they they had to
separate the two you know it's like you know and and so um where's she gonna go the league gaster
well i that that's a good point but i don't think that that necessarily means that um that that she
can't get a job at the league they were very clearly willing to retain her for something else
right they offered her they offered her the so the opportunity so the way i look at it is um
she may get another shot at this and that'll make things even juicier and the the the thing is is
that they obviously went to the players and said what do you suggest we do here you know there's
an issue and it seems like as jesse pointed out that the players said we like the coach yeah and
fine you know they deal with the coach on a regular basis i mean you just won it's it you
know what i think this is part this is a problem when you have a league that owns all the teams
that that's a problem of course and right now you know obviously they kind of have to do these
things this way because it's early but i look at this and i and i think she'll be back and she'll
be she'll be gm and somebody else and i think it'll be very very interesting when they meet
in the playoffs oh man i don't think she'll i would love that i don't think she'll be gone
long you know because why if you were willing to move her to another position within the league
clearly you like this person uh clearly the situation can't continue the way it is because
it's got to a level of this is not going to work anymore but i don't think that means she's out of
the league i just think that means she didn't want to do whatever they offered her and she's
going to wait for the next gm post is it one of those things where like the gm hires the coach
but there wasn't ample time to do it so the league is like all right we'll do it for you and it's
this guy and oh no they hate each other yeah i don't know you know and sometimes it's like with
great bands right sometimes people just are oil and water and they work together for a certain
amount it's often the most successful great bands that can't stand each other and and and really
you hear and they all got along there's a friction that creates this great thing that happens and in
this case they win a championship so i mean she's still a championship general manager uh-huh i
I don't know.
I wonder what her future is with the league now that she because some of the reporting Michael Russo went on a podcast called Sunday Sermons, and he spoke a little about it because he's been doing some research on that.
And he said that she feels Natalie feels backstabbed, backstabbed by the situation.
OK, the league made a decision to hire to choose Ken over her and and for everybody to dissolve the situation.
And I want to read this quote here, Jacob Laurie Vier.
I'm not saying that correctly.
um do you want to take a stab at the french last name but jacob had a quote from michael russo
from the podcast that i think adds to the context of the story uh russo said what's interesting here
when the team is hiring the investigator and the investigator develops a finding it's still up to
the team to decide what to do and that's the case here as well what i understand is after talking
to many sources is the consulting firm advised that this is not the first time in professional
sports that there's been dysfunction in an organization which i think we should all
understand um the consulting firm said let's mediate this out and it was decided at the end
of the year not to do that we're still only getting one side of the story and i've talked
to a couple players in the team that are very pro darwitz four players on the team that we know
were on the other side clearly um we're getting one side here it's a very bizarre situation it's
clear kendall has a lot of power both in the league and with the team she had a baby right
before the season went on maternity leave came back called lines on the bench she had a lot of
power for a player on the team she's very pro kendall ken clee and holds a lot of power with
the league and had her hands in with this so it's a very sticky situation it sounds like they
couldn't resolve these two individuals who didn't get along all season long and with all of this
mess going on they still won a championship so yep i don't know credit to them for doing that
it's kind of a great story yeah i wish it were documented now here's the thing i want to watch
this there are two outcomes here right because minnesota was the fourth best team out of four
to be in the playoffs right they go and they miss the playoffs next year let's say new york gets
their act together and they and they push them out doesn't natalie look really good
well now the opposite side of that can be true too what if they repeat what if they were without
her that result can so i think all that this is what i love about sports is that kind of stuff
it's like well what are we gonna who's gonna come out here looking good all right who's gonna look
like the genius you turn me this rules i think i think the perspective that oh this is so bad for
the league and all that stuff like take a step back like if there's controversies in the nhl
every hour like what like what like the entire show is based on let's let's chill here for a
second on on diminishing what they did this season on having a very successful league uh that they
got underway in six months and it was a complete success and these things are going to happen and
it just adds to the lore of the story and these teams and these individuals that we want to follow
and the only reason we're talking about this because we care about this league now yeah exactly
it's not like the end of the world that oh my gosh two people didn't get along it's it's actually
kind of fun and it adds to the story imagine they'd all got along and how boring that would
be yeah it's draft day is the draft not today yeah is it not today june 10th like yep this is
fucking exciting yeah no this rules this rules i changed my mind this rules hey that's what that's
what discussion shows are for now we're going to bring on one of the co-founders of pride tape
jeff mclean to talk a little bit about pride tape obviously so let's bring jeff on two and five

Jeff, thank you
Joining us from a hotel room in Seattle
Now, you're there for a Pride hockey tournament this weekend, correct?
Or it was this weekend, this past weekend?
Yeah, that's correct.
I came in on Friday, and it wrapped up yesterday afternoon with their all-star game starring Andrew Ferentz and Luke Prokop as the captains.
But it was an amazing tournament.
Andrew Ferentz is one of those guys that has always been a community involvement guy.
Since the second he showed up in Edmonton, he was like that, right?
He was that kind of guy in Boston as well.
How big is it to have former NHL players like him, you know,
oiler captain, and I know you're a big oiler guy.
And future.
And Luke Prokop.
And Luke Prokop.
What's it like to have those guys at a tournament like this?
It's really, it's everything.
Andrew was involved with Pride Tape from the very beginning
when it was just still an idea on paper.
He was captain of the Oilers.
He came into the office.
We told him about the idea and he said, whatever you need.
uh i'm in so uh so he's he's been a big part of our team uh since the very beginning and luke uh
family friend actually so uh very small world but luke is just one of the best people you can meet
and uh got to hang out and watch the oilers game with him the other night uh at the crack and ice
plex so that was uh enjoyable but very cool yeah having the pros involved uh the visibility for
the community means so so much well and and i just i want to say this i'm looking at an article
from you on nhl.com from june 22nd 2022 okay okay and we're i'm looking at this and you it's a very
eloquent article talking about the importance of pride tape and why it's here and uh you know the
goal of at that point producing 10 000 rolls of pride tape uh and all the other things that go
with it. In between that and now, we have seen the NHL roll back any sort of, I wouldn't say
commitment, because that doesn't seem fair, but they were against, and this was a major issue
earlier this season, any sort of, they call them political stances, right? Anything, no jerseys,
no tape, no nothing, and then you have a guy like Travis Dermott come out and use it anyway.
uh how have you reacted to the shifts from the nhl who were uh for so long quite behind all this
and then all of a sudden real swift swift change last year and then the reaction of the players
well we we have had and have an amazing team at the nhl that's been working with us since the
beginning and if it if it wasn't for the i often tell as many people that will listen
And if it wasn't for the NHL, we would not exist.
The Edmonton Oilers basically put us over the hump for our Kickstarter campaign.
Brian Burke and his family, again, were instrumental in Pride Tape becoming a reality.
And all the way along, we've been working with and have some incredible friends that work at the NHL and all 32 clubs, actually, that have been with us since the beginning.
uh we knew when what went down at the beginning of the uh the year um that we were we were going
to come out of it thanks to so many people that care so much so uh including you mentioned travis
uh it's been very cool that you know travis has been reaching out uh to me personally through
text message when he was in toronto with the leafs and then and then when he went to vancouver
and then to the coyotes he would he would send me a note uh saying you know could you send me
some tape to the house because i want to use it every game and just in case it gets lost in the
in the bowels of the arena somewhere i just want to make sure that i have it so uh he reached out
at the beginning of this season and and as as he did every year and simply said you know can you
send me some more tape so that i can have it and i i had mentioned to him that the day prior um
that it looked like there was going to be a ban and and he simply said well i still want to use
it on my stick and let's see what happens but again i i stayed in conversation again with all
of our friends at the league and then the you know the the day that the ban happened uh teams reached
out immediately and said well you know we'll figure this out and we'll use the tape in some
fashion uh important to note that even before the seattle kraken were in the league and and the and
the vegas golden knights i mean they reached out even before they they iced a team in the league
they reached out and and requested the tape so that they could use it in their kids programs in
the summer so we've had support from all 32 clubs right from the very beginning and right right
since the kickstarter campaign so uh that was looking like it was going to continue in some
fashion we just didn't know uh how and and for how long and and uh thankfully teams reached out
right away. And it was 10 days in October where there was a misstep. But I think everybody
realized the importance of this symbol of inclusivity. And again, other pro leagues
around the world, like in the UK and Australia and elsewhere, and not to mention all the minor
hockey league support we have and with the CHL here in Canada, the junior ranks. Again, everybody
has been so incredibly supportive and they were going to continue to be so. So we weren't phased
at all to be completely honest with you the moment travis dermot went on the ice with the
pride tape and broke all the rules it was the first player to use it after the supposed ban
do you did you know it was coming where were you did you know that moment was happening then what
was the reaction afterwards well i mean when i you know when he asked for the tape and we sent
it out to him uh you know he had mentioned in a text that he was he was going to use it and uh
we were i guess a little nervous i mean we didn't want to obviously get him or or any of the teams
or even the league in any kind of trouble but uh even at that point it was a bit of a you know
moving target where i think every day you know people were trying to figure out what what in
fact was really happening so it was you know it was shifting sands and and then you know immediately
other teams and other players started reaching out and and and people just wanted to figure it
out and solve it and uh we were glad that that 10 days later i got a while i was working away in my
i quote my my day job my real job i got a text message uh from a friend at the league that said
you know it's been it's been overturned and and then uh i think scooped uh about 45 minutes later
and and uh you know we just we got out there and started talking to everybody all over the world i
mean all the major news outlets were calling and i was uh i just happened to be down in grimsby at
my parents' house for, uh, Canadian Thanksgiving and, uh, taking calls, uh, from again, every,
every major publication, even outside of sports. And, you know, while my dad was sitting over next
to me in his lazy boy chair going, who's calling now, you know, CNN or ESPN. And he's like, what's
going on? And I just said, go up, go up on your computer and Google pride tape. And, uh, and you
find out and then and then later on having dinner with my parents are like wow there's there's a lot
going on right now isn't there and i said a little bit a little bit so it was it was it was really
fun and and and interesting but again thanks to the support uh grassroots support and all up
through the ranks uh we were we were always uh very optimistic when all that you know kind of
controversy kicked off last year i i think it was easy to feel like things were going backward
a little bit and it's not my place to say if things are going well or going poorly or anything
but when you mentioned the kickstarter it kind of took me back uh because like i i forgot about
the humble beginnings uh of pride tape so can you can you talk about the the progress that's been
made since you began this initiative well it's it's there's been a lot of storytelling and and
certainly involved in a lot of it this weekend here at Seattle Pride Classic and getting to talk
to to fans and to you know to rec hockey players about what it means to them is is really really
moving to hear all of their stories over the years. But, you know, one of the stories that
I like to tell is we didn't really know what, you know, all the way along, like what was going to
happen and who was going to adopt it and pick it up and run with it. But from the very beginning,
working with the NHL, getting the tape out there to all teams, every team requested it right from
the very beginning um they started sending us some videos and i think it was kevin hayes when
he was with the rangers i believe um but there was a video of of of him in the dressing room
and he was all by himself there was low lit in the room and all you could hear on the video was
the unfurling of the tape onto his stick and you know to be honest with you like hadn't really
thought about that in particular. I mean, we knew that we wanted tape versus jerseys or armbands or
helmet decals, mainly for the sole reason that those things have been done before. And we wanted
something that was individualistic, you know, that was, and we all know that the ritual of putting
one's tape on is very personal. So we thought, here's an opportunity where someone can speak out
and speak up for inclusion without even using words so the power of kevin using the tape on a
stick and wrapping the tape that's really when it hit us to go okay here's where the power lies
where the individual like whether it was kevin or or scott lawton or travis or curtis or anyone
throughout the years saying that this is important to me uh one of the one of the cool things that
that Andrew has shared with us all the way along this process to, you know,
he mentioned to me even this weekend again,
it's like what's cool about pride tape is everybody has a different
relationship with it and a different reason for,
for why they may be using it. And, you know, so,
so from the beginning, again,
sometimes we would run up against maybe some red tape because, you know,
some of the organizations we're dealing with are very big and you got to be
respectful of that,
But we would just go back to our roots and go back to the grassroots and minor hockey, which was always our intention.
To be perfectly honest with you, we didn't really think that maybe the NHL would want to be involved at the beginning just because, you know, they're so big and we never really thought of it.
And it was always to get it out through minor hockey and grow it organically.
But soon as the NHL heard about it, they called us up and just said, you know, whatever you're doing, we want to be involved.
And they've been that way since the beginning.
But but seeing these players at any level, pro or or grassroots, putting it on their stick is is really and then sending that message often without using words is is is really where the power lies.
We believe pride tape dot com if you want to get yourself a role.
And by the way, pride tape is for more than just hockey sticks.
I'm looking at the the front page here.
You got of your website.
You got it on lacrosse sticks.
We got it on baseball bats.
Jeff McClain, thank you so much for taking the time to join us.
And thank you for your continuing work.
Are there any sort of things that we should promo for you right now that really kind of set us like, you know, what's what's the goal this year?
What are you pushing towards this year?
Well, firstly, thank you so much for having me.
It's a, it's a real, it's a real thrill to be on and upcoming again here in Seattle.
We're talking with our friends at the NHL about other events that are coming up.
Uh, one in Toronto later this year and, and, and other NHL events and also grassroots events.
You mentioned other sports, uh, we're working with baseball, we're working with lacrosse
and curling and other sports too.
Um, so yeah, there's, there's, there's always lots happening.
we work it from the corner of our desks
we have our day jobs that are really
important to us but
thankfully we have all the people
out there that want to use the tape
they're doing all the hard work
so going on to Instagram
and posting your pictures of Pride Tape
and tagging us
is really helpful to get the message
out and thank you for both
for doing this today
because this is the visibility
that really matters
