and a big announcement on game over montreal last night we're expanding game over which
was always the plan uh and i'm not sure everybody knows that but game over montreal
i mean has been an experiment in the whole history there was andrew called me last spring
and said hey i got this idea and we sort of worked on it and the idea was like hey there isn't a lot
of post-game coverage of any canadian team there's a lot of sports radio stations across the country
that are shutting down believe it or not yes and so the thinking was you know if you want to get
into broadcasting if you ever want to try it uh where are you going to go like my first on-air
shift was um uh like my first on-air shift was like barry and on the evenings and weekends show
that shift does not exist anymore my next show no not like it's syndicated the next show i got was
10 p.m to 2 a.m in halifax also does not exist anymore i don't think they have anybody live past
10 p.m um i'm not sure on that but you know that's just that's just where the business has gone
so this is kind of cool because the idea is everybody needs to get their start somewhere
and we want this network we got very ambitious goals for what this network's going to be
and we want to find the next stars in every city.
So there are postings right now for Game Over Calgary,
Game Over Edmonton, Game Over Toronto,
and Game Over Winnipeg with more to come.
Everyone's like, what about my city?
It's not enough.
Yeah, what about my city?
Announce the rest of them.
You know, the idea is we are hoping to have these ones launched.
Well, Calgary and Edmonton for sure,
because they're going to make the playoffs.
We're still unsure about Winnipeg.
Like we still want to cast for it,
but we're not sure if they're going to make the playoffs.
The whole thing is here, though,
we'd like to have a little warm-up,
and then you're into the playoffs.
And if one of these teams goes on a run,
and I'm looking at you, Calgary,
what a place to be in.
Half an hour show after every game.
It's a big commitment,
but it's also going to be a lot of fun.
And you've seen what Andrew's done
with the just god-awful Montreal Canadiens this year.
You can only imagine.
We had a successful team behind it, right?
Do you, like Andrew Berkshire,
want to document the worst stretch
in your franchise's entire 100-plus year history?
that apply sdpn sdpn.ca careers that's right hey look at me remembering things yeah um if you don't
have profession it says preferred experience but if you don't have professional hosting experience
that's okay too i don't want you to think that you're precluded from that i think what we're
looking for are people who are entertaining um you know steve uh steve has very little
professional hosting experience um but look at steve when you think about it yeah a lot on the
amateur circuits but look at how it's worked for you okay it's worked out pretty good it's worked
out fine so excited about this jesse you put these together um and you're gonna be kind of
we're gonna we're asking for what three to five minute videos and that sort of thing yeah we're
looking for a link to a three to five minute demo if you want to submit that with your application
it's uh very much encouraged all the instructions are there and we'll go through the uh the
applicants and hopefully have something to you guys by playoff time pro tips lots of ums and
ahs nose breathing that microphone never look down the barrel of the camera let's go one thing
one thing i think people should know is you have time like i got an application last night to the
and i'm like you the application deadline is april 10th at 11 59 p.m so you're gonna remember
that applicant you got a week you got you got a week take your time with it if you're ready of
course just submit it whatever but like take the week look things over edit it so you know it's
good make sure your resume is all tight have your have your sibling or your parent look it over you
know make sure you're ready to go you you can't uh perfect what's already perfected just submit
it submit it right now if you're perfect don't even review it don't spell check nothing just
send it in jesse what do you look for you're a fantastic broadcaster but one of the things that
people don't understand is what is a producer? A producer is able to make a product and the
on-air talent look better than maybe even they are. And you're like a super producer with the
stuff that you did with us at Virgin Radio. What to you, it makes a great three to five minute
video? What are you looking for? It's not... So many times in media,
the content is irrelevant if the person who's talking about is entertaining.
you can watch entertaining people talk about anything because they're going to be entertained
so i don't really care what you're saying in the video as long as i'm sitting there and i'm
compelled like that's the whole point i saw a few people like man why is the sports show talking
about the oscars and i'm like first time oh yeah oh yeah you haven't been here for the last eight
years yes i mean to be fair to them there's been a lot of new people we've been over the pandemic
so maybe it is yeah it might be and over the when we were doing all the zoom episodes there wasn't
a lot of like pop culture pop culture moments for us to like go in on yeah so this is now that
we're kind of back into the real world we're kind of going back to our old ways where there's things
to talk about that aren't sports because we've spent like i don't know 20 of the time over the
last eight years on things that aren't sports yeah oh like just as much as least steve went
through a turndown for what stage both on the lfrs and here i don't know if you remember that
no you twerked on a wall in your lfr i do remember that and you did it in the uh in the old studio
that we used to broadcast out of
on the fifth floor at Rogers?
I don't remember doing it.
I don't even think that's on video.
That's how long ago it was,
but I remember it.
Oh, wow.
I just, I was so into it
that I just did it for YouTube.
So in conclusion,
we'll gladiator this
and we'll be like,
entertain us.
You know, we'll be in the stadium
and just send us a video
that entertains us.
And it's exciting because,
you know, it's,
it can be your first step in.
And I think it's going to be a,
I mean, it's a great environment. Andrew and Jesse and myself and Steve will all kind of
shepherd you. We're not going to be like, throw you on YouTube. Okay, go. Don't worry. There'll
be some coaching. Be good. Don't suck. Say something good. But I think this will be a
really fun thing, especially going into the playoffs. And obviously the goal here
is to continue on to next year. And Andrew does it after every single Montreal Canadiens game.
We may have teams of people that handle a specific city. We may have one person that
handles a specific city it's really all dependent on people's schedules we realize it's nobody's
full-time job like look at sdpn it's not steve's full-time job it's not my full-time job it's
jesse's full-time job and that's literally it right like even cj and julian they've got other
full-time jobs right one full-time employee it's a small business so we're trying to expand this
thing and make it really great and i think obviously that the opportunity is super cool
and you've got an enormous audience to broadcast to
that is pre-existing on YouTube.
And if you're thinking, well, this is kind of dumb,
starting a show in the middle of the playoffs,
well, we've seen it work before.
That's when we launched ours.
Yes.
In the middle of the third round.
So there's that.
Now, I want to read you a ridiculous stat.
If you're a Toronto Maple Leafs fan,
or if you're not a Toronto Maple Leafs fan,
feel free to dunk on us on this one.
This is from Josh Belief.
Did you know that Colin Blackwell is the first forward
acquired quote near the trade deadline to score for the Leafs in the regular season during the
Matthews Marner Nylander era so let's go back give me the list Brian Boyle 33 games never scored
Thomas Buchanitz got two goals in the playoffs important goals too never got anything in the
regular season uh Nick Foligno never scored for the Toronto Maple Leafs got a few assists
Antti Suomela never played for the Leafs last year.
Who else did they acquire?
Forwards, forwards.
He's on the team now.
He's on the team now.
See, Alex Galchenyuk was way too far away.
Yeah, I know.
So I wouldn't count him in that.
But there is a player on the team right now who gets in and out of the lineup.
Not Wayne Simmons.
No.
Not Jason Spezza.
No.
Gets in and out of the lineup?
He's in and he's out.
He's the 13th forward.
when was kyle clifford he's never scored a goal as a leap not not not in the same season
so the season they acquired clifford he didn't score no oh i believe that oh what because well
because that was uh stopped because of covid too right now let's remember they got him he
no clifford has a goal in six in 1920 he scored one goal in 16 games but that was that the season
he was acquired or was that the next season yeah no that was the same season oh it's okay so maybe
way to go josh big idiot okay so that's guess you shouldn't apply so let's look at kidding
kidding that's a joke that's a joke i don't want to let's i just let her did score so let's let's
look at this then let's look at this so what did the leafs give up for each player oh no brian
boyle the leafs gave up if i remember correctly it was your favorite kind of deadline that trade
It was a pick for a person.
Bang.
I believe it was just a second round pick.
And then Thomas Pucanis, I think, was the same.
Was a second round pick and Renat Valiev and Kirby Reichel.
Oh, right.
Yes.
Okay.
What was Kyle Clifford?
That was a more complicated deal.
He was part of the Jack Campbell deal where he came to Toronto with Jack Campbell.
The Leafs gave up two conditional thirds, one of which could have been a second, but
I don't think it was.
And Trevor Moore, who has been unreal for the Kings, by the way.
Yes, he has.
I don't like this stat anymore.
And then Alex Galchenyuk was acquired at the end of February,
and he scored four goals.
Was that at the end of February?
Yeah.
That's a free agent signing, though, isn't it?
No, it was a trade.
Galchenyuk.
Oh, right.
What was the date of that trade?
February 15th, 2021.
Oh, I'm shocked.
Oh.
Really?
No, no, but that was the shortened season.
Oh, so that was early in the season.
Yeah.
When was the trade deadline last year?
It would have been at least a month later.
okay he played 26 games for the that's the exact same no that's 10 more games than clifford plays
it's a very subjective it's near near the trade in the garbage no i like that within two weeks
let's say within two weeks of the trade deadline what else who else let me blow the last one what
about nick felino yeah oh god first two fourths man he did look so when he was healthy so we that
So just to recap on those four players alone.
Boyle, second rounder.
Your second second rounder with Thomas Placanitz.
What did you give up with Kyle Clifford?
You gave up Trevor Moore, Mikey Stevens' favorite.
Yep.
And you gave up two thirds.
Yeah.
I will say Kyle Clifford was one of those thirds.
That's two seconds, two thirds, Trevor Moore,
and a first and two fourths for Foligno.
That's a lot of draft picks out the door
for four guys who honestly,
even at the best points in their career,
I mean, Nick Foligno had the best
part of his career but he's not the the Leafs like financed the Kings rebuild they did the
trade though I think was I know Jersey's been amazing yeah but but I think that was expected
right that's called a good trade totally oh I'm not future wins for I'm not they've done a very
good job yeah and like the the Clifford deal is for Campbell right so I do that every time
you get a starting goalie for that what's okay so here's what I can't remember about the Clifford
deal was it for clifford first and campbell second yes it was it was for clifford and then campbell
was the throw-in is that no not not no no it was for the it was for the package but the main guy
coming back with that we were excited about was clifford was clifford no it was campbell because
no but anderson was hurt remember hutchinson was playing games and right awful no no no that was
for campbell okay that was a deal but just as i think it was just as much clifford it could have
been more even than we remember with hindsight but it was it was at least 50 50 okay yeah hmm
that was no i i leafs nation was not like let's go can't wait to see it you know he had a game
yesterday yeah he did wow um you know what was not popular when it was announced on twitter but
ended up being the right decision not starting a five foot nine rookie fresh out of school
in his first NHL game in TD
Garden and instead putting in
Kyle Clifford. That was the right call.
Yeah. To end out that
your trade deadline stat.
2020, there was no trade deadline.
Because the season ended.
That's not true. No, I worked it.
They had it. I stood there all day
and they put me on TV like once.
How soon from the
March 12th was the trade deadline?
There were so many
trades that were
awful awful because they just weren't allowed to play out like uh so part of the reason ken
holland i think is so gun shy is he gave up two seconds for andreas to fantasy you he played like
nine games oh mike uh mike green played three i'm pretty sure for the oil and then retired right
the bruins you know the bruins gave up a first for someone that trade deadline andre kasha
whoa andre kasha sucks whoa it was the the trade deadline was like it was like two weeks before
everything shut yeah yeah no i don't remember that at all wow i do that was uh i told the
kelly rudy story right at the restaurant yep yes you've told that 40 times oh
i like it very much all right steve's like your dad when he tells you stories that you've heard
i always laugh at my mom and i tell her this she's got stories on repeat so when she sees you she
doesn't know when it was the last time she saw you and which which stories are in high rotation
i call them high rotation stories so sometimes i'll be like i heard that one and then she'll
finish it anyway just in case i missed a detail and then i'll and then she'll follow up with
second story i've heard that one finish it anyway because you know just in case i missed a detail
third one probably haven't heard that one you know what i'm enjoying adam what's that
slowly watching my mom become her mom
watching
Nona
no she's Nona
she's absolutely Nona
one of my favorite Nona memories
I don't know if I've ever shared this on the podcast
but I think a large number
of people are going to like this
a lot of this show is going to be about conflict
so here let's have a heartwarming
story here there's a comedian named
Joe Avati who
got
uh enormously popular in certain italian communities he he's uh an australian italian
comedian he's got an extraordinarily unique uh accent to anyone from here it's like half
steve irwin half like sebastian maniscalco like it's really confusing he had a bit that went viral
on napster oh my god that was called no nose car accident and it was like half in english i've
heard that half an italian and it's his no no explaining a car accident he got into so he got
really popular in toronto like in the greater toronto area because of the large italian community
he had this joke uh he did no no's car accident in toronto and it was it was an amazing viral
moment because he came here and he goes i've never been to toronto before but i know you all know the
joke i want you to do it with me and they recited the entire joke oh keep in mind this is like 2002
that's something like that so everyone was freaking out so anyway he does a joke where
he talks about watching the news with his no-no and his no-no what everyone will be in the same
room watching the news news lady says the news story and no-no will then turn around to the room
and explain what the news lady just said.
I've seen this, yeah.
We watched that joke and we laughed at it,
me and the Italian side of the family.
Mynona then turns around to the room
and explains the joke.
She explained the joke.
It's so good.
We all just burst out laughing.
It was better than anything he said in the special.
No offense, Joe.
I like in Adam's family that you guys used a radio term
for that, high rotation.
High rotation, it's like your music.
We played this song.
It's such a big hit.
We played every 75 minutes.
That's how we know they're radio royalty.
100%.
Yeah, that's a high-rotation Maryland story.
I know the shit out of the weather.
My mom tells me the weather twice daily.
Like 680 News, just on the 10s or whatever.
Have you ever had your mom pre-pack you for a vacation?
No.
But not on the phone.
So I remember my mom.
Oh, yes.
So I remember my mom and I were going to a Steelers game, but I was going with my girlfriend at the time separately, and she was going with some friends, and it was a November game.
And they can be – you know, Pittsburgh, at the best of times, in the middle of the summer, you can be torrential downpour to bright and sunny about 30 minutes later.
That's just the way it is.
And so the same can happen in the winter.
It can get cold and really shitty very quickly, and then go back to a sunny day.
And so my mom's like, so listen, here's the deal.
You know, this game's in November.
This is – we're talking in July.
you know yeah you're probably gonna need a sweater probably gonna need two sweaters i would say and
you know what if i were you i would wear gloves and then gloves i'm like mom mom 26 years old
i get it i get it she's like no i just i just hope you know that it's cold i'm like mom are
you telling me it's cold in a northern climate in november and she's like yeah i'm like got it
thank you appreciate that yeah and my mom who will not drive on the highway tells me how to drive
like and i'm like i'm 34 i listen i know this is just a really long way of saying i love you
and i love you too but i'm 34 that's a great way of looking at it yeah i got it that's a very
positive way of looking yeah that's why i don't understand why people go you're bothering me i'm
like no this is just their anxiety telling you that they love you yeah yeah well it does bother
me i'm not gonna lie i'm always like mom anyway um so let's talk about the stupid bruins so that
so the stupid bruins played the stupid leaves last night and it's always a stupid calamity
isn't it so they haven't played since november i what's the first thing you guys want to talk
about well i i related to your feelings about the will smith story when uh you woke up and you're
like i i get to talk about this all day i get to talk about this all day i woke up this morning
even last night i was just like this is gonna be the next two days yeah till they play thursday
this is gonna be and like i've learned my twitter lesson don't tweet letting everyone go like people
are letting every wild thought fly out of their head and i just folks i got a youtube channel i
got this podcast i'll do it here question can we start with the good stuff yes yeah austin matthews
goal 39 49 49 even better 49 we are one step away from having a our first 50 goal score since i
think andrew chuck oh man long time we were children little baby children just even more so
and they're telling telling me steen didn't score 50 goals not for us he didn't know no not for us
no mcginley didn't score 50 mcginley mcginley was he got to 40 and bears and got to 37 bears and did
get to 37. I don't think McGilney ever scored
40 with the Leafs, though. I'm going to look it up.
He was so good.
I think he's still one of the most
underrated Leafs of all time. People never talk
about McGilney. 43
with the Devils, 24-33 with the Leafs.
Okay. So yeah, he never got
there. Clarkson didn't score 50. I
know. I know. Clarkson didn't
score half of that total.
By the way, 92-93
Alex McGilney in 77 games
had 76 goals.
He's got one of the greatest
single season goal scoring performances
ever. It's insane. That's crazy.
Not for us, though.
Not for us. That's the thing. I'm sure
several of those came on us, though.
Phrasing? Phrasing, yes.
Now, so then Marner
gets his career-high 28
goals. Now, I remember, Steve, a few weeks ago,
you said Marner could get 30 goals here, and
people were like, get out of here, you're stupid.
And he's, honestly,
that was like the moment his hot streak
started. Yeah. It's crazy.
He was on the ice. He didn't read it.
but i like to think he did there are there are passes he's been making lately like mitch
marner's always been a great setup guy like from the second he got in the league that and then that
season that he had with tavaris oh pretty special tavaris getting 47 goals they're very close to 50
automatic um but this year i don't think i've ever seen mitch marner with a vision like this
yeah he did have the one two on oh where he passed it to the side of the map yeah what's
matthews and marner getting way too cute the last yeah yeah it's true just but what's amazing is
they're still putting it in not on breakaways yeah and uh matthews had the uh on the power play
the one that he scored on he started it with a nice sauce pass over to marner he's such an
underrated playmaker nice uh nice touch no he sucks he sucks he sucks he's stupid he's him and
dry sidle like they both are so synonymous with goal scoring that we forget they know how to pass
yeah and now how do people not know dry sidle can pass i don't know sorry that sequence was
it was one of my favorite things from last night because it it was everything leafs in one moment
for their power play it was it was matthews saucing it over to marner marner shoots it on
nut but a little tip from tavarez alters the angle of the puck so then swayman can't collect it and
then matthews tip shot it right in it was beautiful it's why it's the best it's uh right now the
maple is the best power play they've ever had in franchise history by percentage oh like it hasn't
it hit its stride and it never slowed down i hope they set the record it'd be cool because this
this squad deserves it that the pp1 is incredible the end of last year remember how okay like think
about where we were a year ago and not exactly in march but relative to where the season is right
we're winding it down and so this would be like the equivalent of may last year and um and the
least power play is just stuck like you would you would lament them getting a power play i remember
at the time we said can we turn it down yeah we prefer to play five on five yeah like it yeah
literally literally mckay might get a break well it's like it's like in football where you can
decline penalties if it benefits you it almost would have been it would have been we'll take
third and nine instead of the second and 15 there was a month stretch where i think they had one
power play goal and one shorthanded goal yes it was deadlocked for an alarming amount of time and
what we said at the time was and we weren't the only ones to say this but the talent that they
have they should be a lock to be minimum top five in the league minimum top three in the league but
probably number one in the league at least they should be top three and there should be the bar
should not be any lower than that that should be the bar it's a hard bar but these guys have the
talent and they're showing that which is really amazing that so all that's great against a real
good goalie too yeah jeremy swayman is uh not enough people in the league are talking about
that guy when he makes a save you're like houseway houseway it's the one thing i said correctly in
our preseason preview i was like swayman watch out man preseason previews are the best day you
go back you go i didn't fucking know anything so i've uh somebody on our discord has been keeping
track of how we've been doing and they have a little chart so i'm gonna i'm gonna hit them up
of our preseason yeah oh all those 30 team videos we made and they well okay islanders winning the
division flush they did a cool thing where they gave us points for how close you predicted to
where they are in the projected in the standings right now i think i had detroit above ottawa
oh so i mean i don't know little victories yeah right so in the next like two weeks we need like
half an hour on how awful we were interesting that's okay i'm fine with that yeah listen
they're predictions they don't have to come true i mean you can hold me to them i guess but
uh there are like there are things like i think we we had montreal all of us making the playoffs
i think so i don't remember and you and you keep fucking saying this and i have to stop you now
what you keep saying the coyotes are sneaky good and you've got to stop saying no they had a sneaky
good stretch yeah i agree with that they've been real sneaky you're a sneaky good the last two
weeks Coyotes have been
sneaking them and play hard
and you know one past the
other and now they're both
still shit and next year I
think Montreal is gonna be
sneaky good I don't think
that I don't disagree with
that so this is where the
nightmare starts and we'll
start with Peter Morazic who
is out again groin and you
know with goalies a groin is
like a month minimum
nightmare season and that
was the issue last season I
believe when he only played
12 games i mean it's no wonder he struggled when he's been healthy uh he played his first game of
the season injury out a month gets into another game injury out a month uh comes back gets into
a game covet shutdown uh gets into uh you know he's he's okay he's adequate then he starts playing
real bad plays back-to-back really good games allows a goal against boston that was scored
against him by his teammate so i don't hang that on him injury like we're not gonna see him
till the playoffs probably with an injury like that uh you know and you gotta first of all you
gotta feel for him second of all like you know we keep talking about the next two years of his deal
and you know how do you trade that i mean how does he continue to play hockey at the nhl level
if his groin like won't stay attached yeah robie doll island it could be an option there if it's
not gonna not gonna heal it could be but like that's not optimal that's certainly like i you
know that's it forget it's not optimal for the human being like from a team perspective like
this isn't good news like oh sweet we can you know put that on ltir i it was better having a usable
backup goalie yeah it was jack campbell gets injured boom you go to peter morazic who has
tandem experience that's why they sign him out it's brutal brutal so we'll have the hutch and
grin goalie uh goalie pairing campbell should be back thursday he's day-to-day right now okay
don't rush him if that's the plan good but you cannot rush him back so by the way here's the
story that i got from nick barden for my lfr video last night what i was gonna say we all
watched the lfr steve we saw necessarily we all saw nick barden he did a great job that i won't
say go ahead so the marlies have two goalies right now they have michael hutchinson and keith
Petruzzelli Keith Petruzzelli I think is a former third round pick of the Detroit Red Wings the
Leafs signed him as a free agent he's put up really good numbers in the ECHL hasn't gotten
much of a shot in the AHL this season because it's been a bit of a crowded crease Shelgren was
there for a lot of it Joseph Wallace hurt yeah those wondering about him Michael Hutchinson was
held out of the game for the Marlies last night because the Leafs are like oh shit we might need
this guy Keith Petruzzelli was held out of the game due to an illness and the Leafs can't call
him up because he's not even on an nhl contract yet yet keyword there yet um so last night the
starter for the marlies was an e-bug dude one great ah it's nice that it happens our way
sometimes dude what the backup was an e-bug i got that from mark rackham on twitter another
guy who covers the Marlies like they won with two ebugs last night the Marlies don't have goalies
I would not be shocked to see Keith Petruzzelli get a NHL contract they have the slots I thought
the Leafs were at 49 and they were saving the last slot for Matthew Nyes almost called him
Andrew again um they have 47 so they have three more slots you should have sent that first pick
to the moon for Marc-Andre Fleury.
He got a shout-out last night.
Yeah, but like,
and like Carter Hutton is MIA.
No, he doesn't play here.
I thought,
I genuinely thought
the Leafs got him to get him,
and turns out, no.
It's like that one time
the Leafs were the middleman
in the Robin Leonard deal.
Yeah.
Yeah, but they got
something tangible out of that.
No, they got like
a third-round pick.
So it would have been nice
to have Robin Leonard.
Yeah, that's a pick.
But he couldn't have Robin Leonard.
Oh, I know what you mean.
That's what I'm saying.
I know what you mean.
And, like, even with all the defensemen going down last night,
I'm like, is the third round pick not worth having Travis Dermott right now?
Like, where's your depth?
This is so Leafs.
And not just Dermott, Piega, too, who's a right D who's played.
He played games for them.
And as a buyer at the deadline,
you got rid of two guys who can play the right side.
And now what do you do?
I don't understand the philosophy sometimes.
I'm like, is that third round pick worth your depth for this exact situation?
Is a first round pick not worth a starting goaltender that you can trust?
So what they do now, I think, is Riley Brody, Giordano Lilligren, which has been a revelation.
And then your third pair, I think it was Dahlstrom Duzic?
Well, okay.
And you know who else they lost?
Who can play the right side?
Brennan Menel
I'm not letting it go
I told you he was going to get traded and then he was
Insider Steve
You've never heard of Brennan Menel
I mean Steve
Brennan Menel
wasn't making the Marley's lineup
He wasn't
He got scratched by the Marley
He had a tough season
We need him
Now they're in this
I don't know
I got a question how they're handling
their depth it's not great um uh as babs said we'll need more depth the next season um the
nightmare continues with justin hall who takes his face mask off only to get a puck to the face
where the mask was did he get a puck to the face or the back of the head i don't know but there
was blood on the front of his head i saw that i was very confused maybe it was blood that pushed
to the front of his head i didn't actually see it up close to be honest with you i thought it
hit the back of his head but i also saw the blood so i wasn't that's it's no generally speaking
bleeding from the head's bad are you sure yeah okay all right only if you're sure yes it's um
it's not great it's not great and and then we're going to talk about labushian well how did that
happen well well he pushed him he pushed taylor hall into the boards taylor hall went in head
first that let's talk about that first let's talk about that was mad i understand why hall was mad
it was a dangerous play yep it was a very dangerous play uh thankfully taylor hall's all
right and he's good yep so that's definitely all right definitely all right so he turns around
and uh to quote jack edwards grabs labushkin's ear is that actually what that's what he said
a little grab can the can the bruins media stop no they gotta be homers no okay jack edwards doing
the play-by-play is one thing like uh joe hagerty who like we've he's been very kind to me but he's
like ah he turtled like what for the rest of the game he didn't come back they were down to one
right d dude yeah he turtle his concussion like i don't understand yes and this is the thing you've
never faked a concussion before i watched the taylor hall hit yeah or the punch slap whatever
you want to call it bop i called it a bop i think we can all agree on bop i watched that
in real time and i was like oh what the and like i have to admit it does at first glance look like
a dive from certain angles you're like what he barely touched him you watch from that side angle
it's gruesome man okay close fist or not and too many people are getting caught up in the shape of
taylor hall's hand we need to call out the worst take on this whole thing what's the worst thing
producer drew well i believe you he's had he's had some rough takes lately i'm not gonna producer
drew tried to argue that like taylor hall was trying to grab lubushkin's jersey no and missed
i think i saw your tweets drew it's awful i think drew's trying to stop it stop it that's a rough
how do you grab a seat and sit this one out we get it you like the abs we get it
i'm kidding i love drew but but in all honesty i'm mad because nathan mckinnon hurt himself
um now look so this is the punch right here and i've got it up on my computer jesse you can
replay it on yours too but bam right there yeah he catches him flushing the jaw and i i don't know
what the intention was because the intention doesn't matter what matters is the outcome
The thing is, guys, it's not about how hard somebody, when you get into a car accident
and somebody gets injured, they don't go, you know, that wasn't hard enough for this
to be dangerous driving.
Right.
And it's quite obviously, like with the jaw, as we know from boxing, especially when you're
not looking, a jaw can be extremely vulnerable.
That's why for 150 years there's been no slash to the head rules and no high sticking rules is because we know the head is a vulnerable spot.
I'm going to butcher this, but the jaw, like if he was to be punched like flush in the cheek.
It would have been better.
Yes, like it could have broken a bone, but it would have been better for his brain for lack of a better way of putting it.
Right.
With the jaw, it frigging flings your head around, which is what gives you a concussion.
it's the movement of the brain inside the skull and hall you know whether you call it a punch or
a slap or a bop or an ear grab what's an ear grab we must bring it all jersey grab jersey grab
come on drew here jesse has it up just read it just drew said i don't think he punched him
looked like he was just going to grab the jersey and swiped his ear that's why he shoved after
that's a dang it that's yeah like that should make that is a dang it but also okay can i throw
it out there it doesn't matter yeah yeah at the end of the day yeah what what what matters at the
point yeah yeah like did someone did someone get hurt or not taylor hall got a taylor hall who is
a multi multi multi multi multi millionaire got a five thousand dollar fine max allowable under the
cba blah blah blah we've talked about that at length and two minutes for roughing who's not
taking that deal especially how often are we going to see this over the next month in the
atlantic division the panthers the lightning the leafs and the bruins are all in a dog fight right
now and they play a bunch of uh they play each other a bunch of times down the stretch uh frankly
the george peros and the nhl are sending a message that this is allowed and are therefore endorsing
and encouraging it if you're not doing this for your team over the next month you're not doing
your job brad marchand had a mission last night bro okay jesse yes what did brad marchand do at
the end of the second he cross-checked john tavara several times multiple times yeah he knew what he
was doing right in the tricep this might be a playoff match right where the elbow pad meets
the shoulder right where there's that little fucking gap there's some skin there he's going
right for it and john tavaris is is the color of a week old banana right now and you know what he
got 10 minutes for yapping at the refs yapping at the ref man no the cross check was legal bad
league and you know what you know what i was thinking this morning i had an epiphany i had
a shower epiphany i was thinking of you in the shower jesse shower epiphany it's yeah
oh oh why where's that right am i right you could have gone so many different angles no no you take
that yeah and we'll take it back also that was a weak high five jesse come on now is it no i think
he was more trying to grab your collar i think he was more trying to grab your collar no i had
an epiphany um where i was like you know what the nhl nhl officiating is shit and player safety is
shit and i'm done talking about it jesse my sincerest apologies you're absolutely right
we need to keep fighting the good fight we have a podcast with like 75 000 people a show
i work for the rights holder gary i'm in your kitchen bill i'm in your kitchen george i'm in
your kitchen watch the water watch the water break the water well break the rod with the water we
Frank, the NHL Department of Players' safety, you shambolic piece of shit.
And also, Frank, NHL officiating the worst of the major sports.
Baseball exists.
Baseball's pretty bad.
Angel Martinez is still in up.
Yeah.
There was an awful call on Scotty Barnes on Tuesday night.
It was awful.
All referees are bad.
Joe West retired.
We should all celebrate.
Listen, I'm in your kitchen, and I'm not going to give up the fight.
every time they're hunk of shit dog shit unacceptable the u-word bill burr talks about
the u-word unacceptable officiating in the nhl is unacceptable and we shouldn't accept it every time
we see some hunk of shit play some hunk of shit call we should call it what it is and how does the
nhl screw up the precedent they set because you know what happened last night an nhl player got
hit it was a borderline sort of from behind hit it was he didn't like it he got up and he punched
the guy who hit him that's what dylan larkin did to a t and when larkin hit matthew joseph
it was like and it was in the face it was like in the face but it was like with the
like his thumb like it was awkward and with his thumb dude got a match penalty
and a one game suspension please tell me the difference yeah please tell me the difference
you set the precedent and then you don't even stick to it this is dude you have a tough job
you have a tough job well what do i always tell you about the beginning of relationships adam
You set precedents.
You set precedents.
Because if your partner does something that you don't like,
and then they do that for six months, but you don't tell them,
and then six months later you go, I hate that you do that.
It's your fault.
And you owe them an apology for blowing up at them.
That's fair.
It's your fault.
They did that for six months because you, by not telling them there was anything wrong with that,
told them it was okay.
Early in the season, you set precedent.
early in the season they said dylan larkin captain of the freaking red wings by the way
he's an nhl captain they set the precedent you cannot in retaliation punch someone in the
fucking face and so they gave him a match penalty which is a big deal and a one game suspension
which is a big deal why then in march
because it's Colin Campbell's ex uh Colin Campbell's son's former team
why then is an almost identical thing a five thousand dollar fine get your head out of your
ass what why do you get up and and work in the morning why do you do what you do to make money
like the Detroit Red Wings should get to play an extra game because they they played one game
without Dylan Larkin and it makes no sense that they did it's one game or it isn't holy shit
not hard like I acknowledge that generally speaking their job is hard cut and dry holy
shit you're not gonna get a bigger layup than that in the video where you go Taylor Hall you
know on March 20 whatever Taylor Hall did this and blah blah blah in the video you put Dylan
Larkin next to it and we all go oh okay that's the precedent and Bruins fans might not like it
but they would at least look at it and go oh okay well that's the precedent yeah but there is no
precedent it's the wild west run by a bunch of people who genuinely don't know what they're doing
the people who hate the nhl the most are the people who invest the most in the league know
what most people are not freaking out about the nhl because most people do not have the time or
patience for the nhl we do we desperately want this league to be good and relevant and watchable
and at every turn they try to ruin it i think is what you're saying when you say you're not
going to let them off the hook all of that's irrelevant because all of that's irrelevant
yeah because the only thing that we should be focusing on is how right adam and i are
when we tell you when you're down and in your feelings and you're like i'm not gonna fight the
good fight anymore and we're like no steve we should keep talking about how the referees are
bad and you're like no i don't want to talk about it i'm done and then all of a sudden something
happens again and you're like you know what gary go eat a shoe you know like thank you
no and we're right thank you austin matthews made a mistake yeah i saw a lot of leaf fans
talking about matthew's cross check against rasp and stallion he made a mistake don't cross check
above the shoulders austin he's still a relatively new player in this league what you're willing to
do is batter and bruise every inch of their body from the neck down yeah just don't hit guys in
the face batter and bruise them and like we wonder why it's just a bunch of like barely animated
corpses skating around by the time we hit the stanley cup final oh it's so hard it's the
hardest trophy yeah you make it harder than it needs to be because you can assault you're just
literally allowed to assault people the and like the level of play does go down it it literally
goes down like it becomes less entertaining stanley cup final is supposed to be the best
hockey of the season and generally speaking and we don't talk about this enough it's the worst
yeah guys are too tired they've been too there's too much travel it's literally really difficult
It's like half your team is going to have surgery as soon as it's over.
Stars lightning.
Gag me with a spoon.
So boring.
Yeah, that list that comes out like three days after the Stanley Cup final
and we run down all of the guys who are going to be out.
Yeah, and what they've played through.
It's incredible.
Like, okay, for any Bruins fans who think I'm filling my diaper right now,
2013, when they announced all those injuries that Patrice Bergeron had,
what did they fall out of the sky what did what did he uh he was pouring a bowl of cereal and
he accidentally got a little bit of milk on the floor and then he and he slipped on it and that's
how he punctured his life no he's been playing like that for three months because you're just
you're simply allowed to assault in the nhl and the amount of people who were talking about like
i saw kelly chase he's a former tough guy in the nhl follows me on twitter like i'm not taking a
shot on him but cbc posted um like is this a suspension he's like what happened to this
once great canadian broadcast and guys i i'm sorry it's 2022 for asking a question it's it's
2022 you may not hit an unsuspecting opponent with a punch to the head it's to the jaw that
takes him out of the game i will back in the day fuck back in the day you want back in the day go
back there oh wait you can't because time is linear and it's 2022 it's not 1987 well fuck
off with that shit it's not 1994 it's not 2002 it's not 2012 it is 2022 progress comes whether
you like it or not no it's it's i am the wall that it bashes against you're not john dutton
for god's sake just to give you an idea of kelly chase's point of view in 458 nhl games he had 17
goals and 53 points and 2017 penalty minutes kelly chase so here's a fun fact uh so does that give
you an idea of where he might be coming from this is this is this is my personal relationship with
kelly chase um the calgary flames i can't remember what year of nhl this was maybe 2001 the video
game and the calgary flames were a wagon and i knew i was going to play them in the stanley cup
final so at the trade deadline i go out and i get kelly chase you know why because the uh the video
game would randomly trigger fights between two players who fight you know who fought in that
game and was one of the best players jerome mcginley took him out of the game so i would
put kelly chase on the first line they would go at each other for a shift they would fight and
then i would put scoring players on the first line and the next time jerome mcginley was out
there after the penalty expired kelly you're back up and i won you sound like an nhl head coach at
the time that's buddy you gotta micromanage these pc video games it was on the pc back then i was
even a joystick guy for a while isn't that nuts you ever play nhl with with a joystick nhl 2000
with the joystick the trigger button was the shoot and the back button was the pass oh you bet and
then if you wanted to deke there was like a little circle button that you would back and forth i
scored a game seven winner in nhl 99 with sergey barrazin that i still remember with that joystick
anyway all this to say i feel like i have to explain uh life on the planet from scratch
every time something like this happens in the nhl i don't care don't care at all about the
way things used to be how are they now how should they be in the future i agreed you want it you
want an nhl where that's allowed why explain i i want you to get up on your soapbox and explain
i endorse punches to the head when i'm upset you know what i mean i endorse punching ilia
labushkin in the jaw now so hard that he is concussed and taken out of the game you know
because reasons let me give you the fuck let me give you the youtube comment version of this
that's coming back at you.
Labushkin started it
by the dangerous play
he had before.
No.
No what?
No.
Dude.
Well then
Matthew Joseph started it
when
you know
and he should be suspended
and not Dylan Larkin.
By the way
if you want to know the play
you should look it up
because it's
both plays are dangerous.
Matthew Joseph's play
on Dylan Larkin
is dangerous
and Dylan Larkin
taking a wild swing
at him dangerous.
Right?
That's why he got suspended.
But they
the retaliation is what gets called in the league jason spezza played over a thousand
games in the nhl and his first infraction got him six games before it was reduced to four
for a game that the officials let get out of hand by the way another good job another
bang up job by the worst league on the planet and i just don't understand why i have to argue
so passionately for punching someone flush in the jaw to be taken out of the game whenever i
endorse the leafs going confetti gloves and sticking up for themselves and fighting it's
not because that's what i want the nhl to be it's because it's fucking allowed and i'm and i don't
if they're gonna do it you might as well do it too i've talked about this for years with uh the
Leafs in playoff hockey watch some watch some video for god's sake watch some video about uh
what your opponents are allowed to get away with and the Bruins are masters masters at the after
whistle bullshit and not getting called for it Brad Marchand didn't get called because he battered
and bruised the Toronto Maple Leafs captain he got a 10-minute misconduct because he hurt a ref's
feelings what a shambolic awful league the misconduct should also come with a power play
for the team i've never understood why why does the guy get a penalty but then there's no like
the team doesn't get anything you know brad marshall just gets to sit out and they play
five on five why isn't there like a two minute attached there even like a major like a four
minute yeah like i i understand why i understand the argument well that's one of the team's best
players and you know they're losing and it hurts their ability to come back what i mean exactly
exactly call the game it holy fuck so simple jesse thank you like also had you could make
the argument that had they called brad marchand uh on tavaris and all those crosschecks because
there was like six of them he probably wouldn't have gotten the 10 minute misconduct for beacon
at the ref because he would have had to sit and get back into the play and sign sticks and he
wouldn't have wanted to um he would he probably wouldn't want to put his team back any further
now i have to tell you i got a lot of enjoyment out of brad marchand um beacon off at the ref
because it's fun watching him implode like i there's nothing that brings me greater happiness
than watching brad marchand meltdown on a regular season game that yes it matters but you're like
dude this isn't even like we're not even the first round here and you're and you're just
melting down i love it um i i do think he stares you in the eyes while he does what he does too
100 he stares you in the eye daring you to fight back so why do nhl officials get in the way of
fights stop getting in the way of fights that you caused by doing nothing do your job for god's sake
oh well you know they've been through a tough time over the fucking haven't we all
Do your job.
You know what we all had to do?
Show up and do our job.
I don't think the pandemic has anything to do with the rest.
People bring it up all the time.
The rest is making the correct calls.
People bring it up all the time with the NHL officials.
What about the pandemic?
Why can't they make the correct calls when they're on the ice?
People bring it up all the time.
If the pandemic has stopped them from making, what would be the connection?
Because they've been through a really difficult time.
And, dude, I've seen it.
Go easy on them.
Yeah, me too, man.
I still had to show up.
All of us.
All of us.
That's so funny.
all of us and when i do a shitty job i get yelled at now i like what the fuck i want to i want to
encourage you if you're if you're if you're if you're jumping off the the uh uh what do they
call the in the wrestling thing i'm my brain turnbuckle yeah if you're jumping off that into
the twitter fray today don't make this about the bertuzzi more thing i promise you i'm not going
to read your soliloquies well because also it it you know whether you agree that it looks the same
where you disagree that it looks the same,
it distracts from it.
Which is, the reality is,
we don't want on any team under any circumstance
somebody getting punched in the side of the head from behind
or in the front.
Frankly, let's be straight.
Do we think fighting's a great idea?
No.
Do we do it?
Yep, but it's not a great idea.
And do we want the LaBushkin hit to be in the game?
No, we don't want that either.
Should you slap a guy at the Oscars?
No.
You probably should not slap a guy at the Oscars.
You probably shouldn't.
So, you gotta...
you gotta okay steve what what do you think of the taylor hall uh punch against elia labushkin
all right i was born march 12th 1988 it was snowing that night my dad had to scrape off his
car because of the ice storm i was seven pounds 12 hours you gotta start from the fucking beginning
with everything everything i just want to have a conversation that is the conversation for why
and and holy shit and i think you're right and i think the the the move forward can't be what
the game has always been and like listen there was the kelly chase and i'm using his an example
no offense kelly right uh but kelly chase wasn't in the nhl because kelly chase was great at hockey
and there was a lot of players back then that were they were very good at hockey but the reason they
were in the show was because they were there to be the the intentional tough guy i'm reading i'm
reading ken dryden's book reading ken dryden's book on steve monador right now and what's so
fascinating about it is aside from the steve monador thing ken goes back into the history
of hockey and it's one of the most fascinating looks at what it was now ken dryden you know for
those of you that don't know played hockey for the haves for nine straight seasons he lost less
than 60 games in nine total total in his entire career wow less than 60 games guys uh obviously
a legend you know was a part of their four cups in a row run unbelievable hockey player and an
unbelievable, unbelievably smart
person as well. Ran the Leafs, ran for Prime Minister.
This guy is brilliant. And what he does
is he talks about
the change from what fighting in the
60s was to fighting in the 70s
to fighting in the 80s. And I'm going to
paraphrase this, but I really, if you love hockey,
you should check this out. Hockey games used
to be like four hours. Well, so he used
to, so in the 60s, if you
wanted to fight, you had to kind of stand up for yourself.
And the equipment
wasn't, first off, the players
were not as fast there were doilies the equipment was literally like here we're gonna put a carpet
under you under your jersey good luck um so you didn't hit as hard right because you weren't going
as fast you didn't hit as hard because when you hit someone it hurt you just as much as it hurt
them into chain link fence and what happened was and he specifically mentions the flyers of the
early 1970s which they did win two cups and he says and this is so fascinating their their head
coach and i forget his name basically said listen we got a couple star players and the rest of these
guys are are are they're players but they're not great players so are we going to try to play to
the best teams levels no we're going to get them to come down to our level in the basement and what
the basement is is the broad street bully reputation three-on-one mauling yes criminal
assault and we talked to who was the guy that um that kenry wrote the book about 60 goals
dennis maruk so when we had dennis on when dennis maruk was on we we talked to him he played for
the Cleveland NHL franchise
and I think the Golden Seals
and stuff too.
Golden Seals, Caps as well.
Yeah, and that's where he scored a 60.
But I said, was the Flyers thing real?
And they called it the Flyer flu.
And players would all of a sudden
just become quote unquote sick
before, oh, I got a cold
because I don't want to play the Flyers
and get mauled tonight.
So as the league expands
and because obviously at this time,
you've only got so many elite players
as we see now.
it becomes more and more that there's more teams and there is less talent to go around so what do
you do so you keep doing what the flyers do and it gets to the point in the mid-1980s and i this
stat blew me away the detroit red wings in one season so fights went from like 20 is five a
season to like 20 a season to like 60 to 70 a season for a team detroit fought i think it was
187 times
in the mid 80s
in one season
that's minimum
two fights a game
now
that is
if you look at the
Kelly Chase era
Kelly Chase was drafted
or I think it was
actually a free agent signing
I'm not
this isn't supposed to be a shit on
no it's not
but I'm just saying
the Kelly Chase
the Bob Proberts
the you know
whoever else you want to mention
Bob Probert could play hockey
these guys
there was a thing back then
where you had the tough guy
who did that, right?
And I thought that was so fascinating
because obviously the fights
have gone down since then.
But the reality is
there is a significant amount of people
in the hockey media,
Don Cherry was among them,
and you can name a bunch of people
who, frankly, are of that era
and believe that that was
the right thing to do.
We've had Ken Reed on the show.
Now, I vehemently disagreed with Ken Reed,
and I love Ken.
But, you know, it's like,
ah, it's when men were men,
and, you know, that's when
you defended your you know you you stuck up for your guy or whatever and that was the canadian
thing to do the reality is that it's not conducive to a good hockey game doesn't add anything it's
not conducive to an individual's health definitely takes away from their life probably in the future
and and you know if we're gonna like we were the first ones to say after the austin matthews thing
he deserved a suspension i think we all said one game you cannot cross check someone in the head
And we said one game because, like, do you fucking know?
But I think what happens is a lot of that, and again, nothing against Kelly personally,
but a lot of that type of mantra remains among head offices and media.
And what that does is it pushes that onto fans.
And I just don't, I don't think that, I don't think that we really understand or know the effects that this has in a player's personal life afterwards.
And the thing is, that's why we need headshots out of the game.
We need it out of the game, and to do that, you need to penalize, and I hate to say it,
Boston, Taylor Hall should have been suspended for a game.
At least.
Should have been suspended for a game.
I'm going to say a game.
Like, we're not asking for the sun and the moon.
No, it's just a game.
What?
And then at the end of the day, you kind of go, okay, so that was it.
We move on from that.
You do that enough, people stop doing it.
That's it.
It's over.
And I don't think, listen, if it had been a leaf that did it, I'd say the same thing.
brandon shanahan someone texted me today brandon shanahan needs to step up and take the fifty
thousand dollar fine the president of the leafs the president of the leafs used to be in charge
of this shit and if you wonder why the leafs don't seem to get the calls when it comes to this sort
of thing it might be because the president of their team used to be in charge of this took it
in a progressive direction where suspensions were increased and the second he left they undid all of
that you you think they like the job he did you you think they look back on brendan shanahan's
tenure as uh the head of the department of player safety as good of course they don't they undid
everything that he did shanahan's got a step he's got to step into the public eye here
he has a tweet every now and then shanee get in front of a mic and call these guys out for the
shitheads that they are good call them out for the awful job that they're doing well you know
what people will do then they'll go back and they'll be like shanee you did all this he did
all this all because of the shanee was a shanee was a tough sob to play against yeah but then uh
the 0405 lockout you know he he wanted the stricter penalties and then he was getting
ridiculed on the bench by his own teammates and we wonder why nothing fucking changed well
and listen i'm not saying that it's right to do that but i'm what i'm what i'm trying to say is
this i think we can all agree when cooler heads prevail and it's not the leafs and bruins
that we don't want that in the game right it's fair yeah it doesn't add anything when cooler
heads prevail i'll say the same thing quieter yeah like i'm not saying this to be a shock jock
i'm not saying this because it'll get me the clicks i'm saying it because it's fucking right
there's no debate here don't put people in the fucking head jesus holy by the way of all from
behind least of all from behind uh and i don't care if it's open palm and i don't care if it
oh my god that it's the so pedantic oh his fingers shut up i'm dying for you to shut up
most unbreakable record that the leafs have by the way i don't know mitch marner's done some
amazing things most uh or fastest to 400 assists or 300 assists whatever it was austin matthews
has done some crazy things he could set the single season goal record most unbreakable record
81 82 in just 68 games bob mcgill sets the rookie for penalty minutes by a rookie
263 today we would call that putting your team down you would no those were all i you can't
yeah those are two guys go off yeah those aren't slashes and hooks those are he's fighting
who leads the league and who leads the leafs in penalty minutes right now let me check
who leads the leafs in fighting majors and is it is the answer one
the leader of the Leafs in penalty minutes
is Michael Bunting with 60
Bunting's gotta calm down
no not calm down he needs to
he took two dumb penalties he needs to not put his team
at a disadvantage he needs to keep being a pest
in the way that
you can get away with everything in the playoffs
I just don't want him to cost
at least anything with a dumb power play
he needs to perfect the pest
yes

Eugene Melnick guys let's move on to this yeah um Eugene Melnick has passed away
mixed legacy I think it's fair to say in Ottawa and it doesn't mean that you don't send your
condolences to the family or whatever but I think we talk about doesn't mean it's not tragic I mean
the guy was 62 of course it is tragic and of course and you know this is a guy that saved
that team from either contraction or moving like they were either gone or they were moving that's
irrefutable and he kept them there and was passionate about keeping them there yes now
do you agree with every decision the man made i highly doubt it uh but you know credit where it's
due on that one and it's a shame that any human being would be passed you know would be passing
away at 62 years old had no idea he was ill still don't know why and you know frankly uh my question
you know after that happens and all the all the really nice like i think there was a really nice
story about when eric carlson's kids were born eugene still sent him uh flowers and stuff like
that oh even after he was with san jose yeah i thought that was really nice to hear you know
like obviously there's humanity and and then everybody even if you don't agree with their
business decisions but the question i have is we have a report already from steve lloyd at tsn
ottawa that the sends are potentially looking at playing five games in quebec city next year for
their home what that's the that's the rumor going around today ottawa twitter is not happy about it
uh it's from the press uh it's from dennis lessard now full uh uh full full disclosure i can't read
it because it's french oh um but uh basically the report says there have been preliminary
discussions steve steve you know basically paraphrase so we're trusting him here yeah
You would trust a TSN guy.
I would.
Preliminary discussions to have the Senators play five games in Quebec City.
Now, I don't think that the Senators are moving to Quebec City.
I think it's a way to engage Quebec fans and maybe throw Quebec a bone and maybe make the
Premier look really good, right?
Because the Premier was on the phone with Bettman and Daly and blah, blah, blah, blah.
And let's get some votes for people who think that I can single-handedly bring a franchise
back to Quebec.
years ago i remember a puck talks event where pierre lebrun talked about that being one of
the senator's greatest downfalls is not engaging um the quebec audience which they didn't do from
the beginning right no but like when you think about it so ottawa it's the capital of canada
because it's right on the border of ontario and quebec and it's it's like the leafs not engaging
anything east of scarborough you know what i mean it's imagine the leafs fan base cut off
at the toronto city limits it went west but it cut off at the toronto city limits all right yeah
you've got hall right there nope or gatineau adam how dare you yeah that too used to be hall
now it's gatineau yeah no home of the olympique yeah well so so that that is a that's a really
good point and i wonder now how things will change for the senator's organization because
clearly there's work to be done there they need a new arena right they do yeah so so you know
obviously i don't think since fans are thrilled about this concept because i think rightfully so
they're a bit skittish about that team anyway there's been some bad bad moments as a senator's
fan is the team moving okay and and then and then you know when eugene was on television talking
about well if they if we can't make this work we'll have to do something about that you know
those veiled threats have always sort of hung over and i wonder how the marketing is going to change
and how the organization is going to change and if the melnick family plans on hanging on to the
franchise at all because you never know yeah like i don't even know who it passes to well that would
be in his will yeah well of course so well and wills take forever they do could be a couple years
before you see anything yeah we saw um in the last decade ralph wilson he was the owner of the buffalo
bills for all of those uh decades and he passed away and then the team was eventually sold it
went to a trust with the family and the team eventually sold it to the pagoulas and then now
we're kind of seeing uh how they're running the franchise and how it's changing over the years
and they just recently announced they're going to build a whole new stadium so in buffalo and
a lot of it's going to be publicly funded which is awful uh because you i hate that they're
billionaires i hate that so much they should be able to build their own stadium but you're trying
you're starting to see how the new ownership how the pagoulas are running the bills now like you're
it's coming to fruition so it's gonna take a couple years whatever happens with the franchise
but like looking at just instances in other sports and how that's come across like there's gonna be
some change here with senators we can't expect them to be the same it's gonna be a whole new
regime that's running it and all i was reading a lot of the stories that have been coming out
about melnick over the last like day or so and so many people uh wrote about how involved he was
with the senators there was a moment in the elliot freeman told the story i forget which
playoff uh round it was but there was a moment i think it was when their eastern conference finals
they lost in six games um to whoever they lost in the sixth game but they were they were down
in the second period in a second period intermission and melnick wanted to go down
from the owner box to the locker room and talk to the team he wanted to get in there and then
it took the entire pr team to hold them out of that locker room and not go in there and talk
because he cared so deeply about every single game and every uh single aspect about the team
and i don't know if the next person is going to come in and care that much about the sense because
this was his entire life but you're going to see a shift of somebody who isn't that involved where
they're like i need to break down this door and get into this room to fire up you know i wonder
if that was against the sabers i don't know i don't forget i forget the exact details of the
story but like that's the passion that you saw from melnick uh running this franchise and he
cared about every little detail so i'm fascinated to see where it goes from here because it's going
to be a whole different world for senators fans going forward oh yeah you know oh yeah there's no
no organization has changes all the way up at the top and doesn't change yeah yeah so that'll be
that'll be a story to watch i you know here's my hope uh the senators stay in ottawa and that the
relationship between the community and the fans gets better and that they get a new arena and
that they engage the the uh french-speaking and quebecois uh and area place because obviously
otto's right on the border by the way the reason that ottawa is the capital of canada is not
because it's on the board what is it was supposed to be toronto but that was too easily attackable
uh and because toronto was invaded in the war of 1812 when it was york and they and the americans
burned the fort so when they were discussing this they were like we can't have it that close to the
united states because they're an enemy technically even in the 1860s we're still not sure about them
so we were lied to in school is what you're saying no no they talked about that in school
and then they put it up in in ottawa because it's harder to get there i i must have been sick that
day anyway that's why they one thing i really america one thing i really hope changes with
descends is their relationships with ex-players yes they have a real problem with alumni and i
think that was top down so i hope they mend all of those fences with ottawa senators alumni and
the fans get to see those guys in the community it's it's good you know the story about the
flowers with carlson but you know we know that it didn't it didn't end well right it didn't end well
um yeah dan and alfredson i think you just said not great no not great it's not great and this
is coming from a leafs fan and like dude that was our identity for like dave keon didn't show face
with the leafs organization decades and it took 40 years it took a literal ownership chain just
just as otto was going through it took that in toronto to mend all of now all the leafs alumni
are like yeah let me do leaf stuff because it's fun because the ownership there cares about the
alumni and they brought back the storied history so i the thing is toronto's was so bad jesse it
took two because remember ballard died it went to steve stavro and then steve to stavro sold it
two of what eventually became larry tannenbaum and mlse when they teachers yeah yeah and the
teachers pension fund and all that like it and then it took shanning getting in there i think
wasn't it lie wiki oh it was like yeah yeah lie wiki really started that you know like
i mean you get in there as you know someone who maybe doesn't know the history of the team and
you're like all right who are our best players ever this guy this guy and this guy uh do we
talk to any of them no they hate us they hate us we treated them shitty and then we said
hey you're gone like oh maybe we should try to fix that now all of them are all around toronto
all the time doing a lot leafs alumni stuff and i hope the senators get that same uh stuff from
their ex-players agreed agreed and i think the fans deserve it now with the next world cup
we will not uh we we are finding out that first off it'll happen in 2024 and there will not be
a young guns team and there will not be a sum of europe team boo and yeah yeah so it will be
actual entire countries um so the most yeah so they're they're thinking it'll happen in february
midway through the 23 24 season which is a complete departure from other world cups when
one used to the canada cup and world cup events used to happen in like september um and the nhl
pa has asked for years for the league to hold them mid-season so that you're not you know because
you don't want to have it here's the thing if you got a guy coming off the stanley cup
and they stop playing in, I don't know.
End of June.
Yeah, mid to late June.
And they've got literally eight weeks
till they're back on the ice playing,
not just hockey, but hockey at the highest,
highest level with the best players in the world.
I can understand why they would want to do that.
And also the other thing about those tournaments
is that remember like in the preseason,
there's a lot of like little strains here
and little groin pulls there and whatever,
because even though you worked out all year,
getting your body back up to that level takes some time and in february you're your body's right into
it and i think if i'm going to be honest with you covering hockey for as long as we have which is a
better part of almost a decade now you're longer than a decade the most boring part of the season
is late january early february yeah it's like where things start to go right after christmas
you're like oh my one piece of feedback would oh please make it january yeah please make it
january it's like the worst month yeah is and this year it was so much worse because of um
all the delays in the schedule yeah oh youtube revenue sucks and apparently nothing is good
about january uh the owners are not happy about the idea of it happening in february 2024
uh when would you be happy guys yeah uh and uh the nhl say they're also committed to 2026
winter olympics in italy nice great oh i didn't know i was going back to oh hey hey so that's
great i'm really excited about that um yeah i'm glad that honestly the the last world cup was
really exciting the young guns team was cool but the fact that some of europe made it to play canada
was like fart and the gold medal games it was remember it was a two-game series it was ridiculous
why and kenda won an ot it was like dramatic but it was also no it was like last minute oh
short-handed as well oh look at the big brain on brad marshand and it was it wasn't exciting
because we knew kenda wasn't gonna lose both games no right it almost went to game three it
was almost exciting awful awful yeah so that i thought that was kind of cool though it's kind
of nice to start to talk about that stuff to be honest with you for the last two years about
you know talking about covid it's so nice to actually talk about planning events again and
things happening again and the the the the nhl and and hockey doing great things the one thing
i gotta say i know they had to redo the world juniors but boy did they pick the worst fucking
month for it oh i cannot believe it's august it's august i cannot believe that those numbskulls
picked august we have had let me tell you this as a fan you i can't imagine just being a fan and
just you're exhausted because like look 2020 was kind of a write-off year you had five total months
of hockey right you had january february and then you had the midsummer uh to finish the playoffs
and then nothing happened until january of 2021 2021 there were two months without nhl games
that's it 10 months of hockey and then this year we go right back into it right and we're gonna
have a short summer again and then they're putting the world juniors right in august who the hell's
gonna cover that all the media is like i'm going to my cottage man i'm out see you the problem is
the junior season starts earlier right then do it in june oh man i'm staying like up do it at the
end of june the nhl probably fought against that the women's under 18s was finally moved to june
i think um but oh man i i just know i to be a fly on the wall in the tsn studios the day that
was announced fuck yeah hey we're all gonna have august off no you're not adam with all of that
said why are you making andrew work perky ah berkshire yeah you are forcing him to do game
over junior we have in august with covid the whole thing he has to have covid that's the entire month
yeah yeah why are you forced if you just said oh why is it working in august why are you forcing
andrew to work huh i i haven't even we haven't even talked about it we've been so focused on
game over for the playoffs he said there's a gun to his head and he has to do it adam's gun to the
earth every complaint every listen we're all equal partners in sdpn but i every complaint that you
have please direct adam yeah it's his fault certainly it's my fault no no we don't we don't
all vote on things listen one of one of the business partners in any business has to be
objectively evil right so i guess that's easily you gotta be easily you look at your fucking shirt
i don't know how to try to pretend like a bright green
plaid shirt is evil let's do the press conference oh uh before that um i wanted to hear your
thoughts on something that came out of the gm meetings so the whole ltir thing the playoff cap
that we talked about oh yeah and then we were like oh some gms want this somebody's come out
as the spokesperson for this as he's been leading the church who ken holland he so ken holland has
been revealed as the guy who went around to the gms and asked them if they thought a playoff cap
needs to be stipulated and he talked to pierre lebrun about it he doesn't know how to so this
is from lebrun in the athletic he said he's doing uh he's in favor of exploring the idea of a
playoff cap? Holland says, I am. Yeah, I certainly am. First off, I'm one of 32. My feeling as a
manager has always been that if you've got the majority of the group feeling that we should look
at something. And I think that there's enough interest in there that we want to continue to
monitor it. We're in a salary cap world. You get into the playoffs and certainly you want the
feeling to be that everybody is playing under the cap and that an injury can't be an opportunity to
build your team i think that was the discussion we're going to further discuss it in july in
montreal at the draft so that's where we're at thanks god thanks edmonton can you get control
of your mans got all into combat like listen uh he says something there that we've touched on like
aaron eckblad goes down for the florida panthers and everyone's like oh gosh you know we feel for
aaron and that's so terrible and then we spent less than five minutes saying that before we went
how can florida benefit from this yes your captain should not go down with an injury and then you
lick your chops right which is why you need to get rid of the salary cap right so your ltir will
still exist you're going to still do you think a salary cap's gonna fucking matter the montreal
canadians are spending a hundred million dollars on salary this year are you kidding me and you
Do you think a salary cap and the playoffs are going to matter?
If Montreal made the playoffs this year,
they would still have $100 million on their cap.
This is Alan Walsh.
No, it's not.
I've been saying this before, Walsh.
Where are you listening?
All right, Alan.
Oh, my God.
That drives me fucking crazy, too.
All right, Alan.
Alan.
It's crazy.
Mr. Walsh.
And here's the other thing.
Here's what it does, right?
If you do that, you're going to keep stars out of the lineup in the playoffs
because of a number.
Who should win the heart?
Go.
austin matthew wrong it's jonathan hubert
so i think a lot of people's argument well i think they're the gm's argument for this is that
the team that you ice should be cap compliant so that hey the salary cap's gone in the playoffs
but when you ice a team in the playoffs it needs to be cap compliant make the coyotes cap compliant
please then make the coyotes spend to the fucking floor and the senator spend to the you want to
participate in this league participate in this league on the other end too it goes the highway
goes both ways kids how about this un-fucking-real to get the most benefit out of your ltir you have
to spend closer to the cap why if the point of the salary cap is to stop teams from spending
too much money why then do you encourage them to spend as much money as possible
that doesn't make any sense that doesn't make any sense it's oh you know offside we talk about
the spirit of the rule it is not in the spirit of the rule of the salary cap so the idea with that
is you only get relief if you are at the limit so they're right but teams artificially get
themselves yeah but that's that's the hack that teams have discovered it's not a hack it's an
obvious flaw all right right that's like oh man how did he you know how did the guy break in your
house well i think it was the door that i left wide open like okay did he hack his way into your
house or did he just walk in and i i don't think like it's i think it's ridiculous if you try and
put a salary cap in the playoffs because you don't want a situation where your star can't play a
playoff game sorry you're an ex-blood like we don't want to get in there we don't want to be
in game seven and austin matthews is on the no we want it to be fair because you can't fit under
the cap you're trying to build hockey in vegas mark stone sit your ass down go eat popcorn right
mark stone can't play because vegas can't be cap compliant in the playoffs like just let them play
the best players but i just i don't know just like okay what when when barack obama was president
somebody asked him how many times you have voted for him when he was president no just listen okay
listen seriously somebody said hey man how come you haven't legalized weed yet do you not believe
in that and he's like yeah i do i don't think you should have you should go to go to go to jail for
for having to join on you that's ridiculous but he said i have other shit to deal with you realize
that like i had there was a list of things that's not high on the priority list how in this how in
this case is this on the priority list with all the other shit that we've talked about even just
this episode because uh it was highlighted on uh a number of platforms elliot freeman i believe
brought up on 32 thoughts this probably wouldn't have been an issue had nikita kucherov not flaunted
it yeah and then the donoff happened right before and the whole reason the donoff is happening is
because they want to utilize lti so we're doing this for people's feelings again yeah it's it's
It became a big media story.
So the GMs are like, you know what?
We need to fucking talk about this and solve it.
And Ken Holland went around to the GMs and was like, hey, you guys want to get together?
And then now they're talking about it.
Habs spent like $100 million last year.
Yeah.
And this is the issue.
The Arizona Coyotes do not have a hockey arena to play in in five months.
And they do not.
Five months!
And they don't spend to the floor.
they can't play anywhere with their team but they don't spend on the floor jesse they don't
actually spend real dollars on the floor why isn't that a problem why are we shocked when the same
group of literally 35 to 40 people can't come up with ideas that are good the good thing is let me
just say this and steve said this first years ago you too can be an nhl general manager i promise
you can like try you simply try you'll get there then i'll be rooting you on the better thing with
this is that these gms can't do anything about this it needs to be negotiated with the nhlpa
so they're doing a lot of blowing smoke and for no good reason taking up a lot of hot air with
this topic when they can't do anything without the pa's uh consent and like adam said so this
is a all a waste of time it's time that can be spent on other shit like headshots i don't know
let's do the press conference fucking now okay two and five canadians will hear the words you

the steve dangle press conference it's it's not a bad truth it's a i just i picked the first thing
i saw i just i picked the first thing i saw uh yesterday a new episode of noxian cax dropped on
the scpn youtube and on all of your favorite podcast apps please listen to jocelyn rock
tell some amazing stories including one about a uh dog taking a big dump in a cwhl
addressing her it's pretty funny yep it's pretty good they get so much good stuff
like just because they're so casual with these players and because they're all just buddies
and friends and they're just they're just shooting the shit and you get so much good
inside hockey stuff it's fascinating marie philippa land episode very good oh yeah very
good and you like hear her warm up in real time as well right yeah yeah she gets comfy like uh
20 minutes in and then this is just off the rails from there yeah it's awesome and adam on we didn't
talk about this on monday but on monday uh new agent provocateur dropped yes um do you want to
talk about that a little also good oh did you like it steve i did i listened to a lot of our shit the
trade deadline postscript slash ask
Alan, which I love because we actually got
the chance to run your video
questions. You can send them to
askalanwalsh at gmail.com. How
hard is that? Maybe we should
get an SDPN account for that. I don't know. What do you think?
I can make one. Okay. Anyway, it doesn't matter.
Alan answers
your questions about some of the
trade deadline stuff. We also
kind of talked about no trade
clauses. And it's so funny because
I was shocked to find out,
and i i confirmed it with alan there is no central registry that keeps track of
no trade clauses and so we talked about this on agent provocateur and i'm not saying that
the two are connected but after the dadanov situation um i think it was frank ceravalli
reported yesterday that they are now going to create a central registry because fucking duh
you have to and the whole thing and alan said alan made a good point right like clearly there
are a lot of leaks at nhl head office like i you get to the point as a hockey fan and there's
somebody who covers the game you know exactly which reports came from bill daily most i can
call i could i could just retweet comment this was bill daily k bill slash bill daily yeah and
and and there are other leaks at nhl head office as well so the the reason that they were worried
about it alan told us that is that they they know that there's a lot of leaks and a lot of players
are like this is my confidential contract information i don't want this leaked so cj
did this discussion on the cj show and he said he admitted he's like i would probably get my
hands on those and they don't want that he's like yeah i would probably tweet out who has
the no trade lesson where to go that's literally cj's job here's here's what a great thing to say
right guys i'm pretty good at this and i could probably get my hands on that yeah and here's
the thing i mean you got to know this in the nhl the walls talk there are no secrets yeah so and
and that's the closer we get to the game the more i realize i'm like holy shit everybody just talks
it's crazy a lot of gossip and and like you're you're almost like this is really privileged
holy holy shit and i'm amazed how often i'm like i shouldn't know this and i'm less comfortable
now that i know it and and sometimes stuff makes it on twitter i'm like oh my god and so so like
when you take it
and you put it
in a real life context
if that sort of stuff
made it out publicly
there would be like lawsuits
but it's the NHL
so it doesn't matter
so anyway
long story short
it looks like they're doing that
because they don't want to
you know
fall on their face again
with trades
but there's so much
about that show
we don't
Alan and I don't do
a lot of shows
just the two of us
because obviously
there's some stories
that you know
Alan really kind of highlighted
when we were talking
last summer
and putting this show together
that he's like
I want to tell these
but when I do get Alan
on his own
And he has so much knowledge to offer.
And it's funny because I don't know that he even knows how much.
Because as a fan, you ask a bunch of stuff.
And they're like, well, this is my everyday shit.
This is boring.
And I'm like, Alan, you don't understand.
We don't know this.
There's no way for us to find this out.
Yeah.
You're the only agent podcast that we're aware of.
Yeah.
It's completely unique.
So I urge you to check it out.
And also, if you ever have a question for Alan, please feel free to send us a video or an audio submission.
because we use them they're great let's do it all right first question this one is from donut cheerio
like it should the nhl get rid of the trapezoid behind the net i'm too young to remember watching
it without it so i'd be curious to hear your thoughts on this um it was literally the like
martin brodeur rule and there isn't much reason for it is marty brodeur was so good at handling
the puck that he would New Jersey had a had the most boring hockey system ever and then if you
did get the puck like if you dumped and chased Brodeur would just fire it out of the zone again
and you'd be stuck mired in the mud in the middle zone or the neutral zone and you could look at
that as stifling offense what it's actually doing is uh stifling defense right because it's not that
Brodeur would get a thousand assists or whatever it's that it would make it um easier for the
devils to break out by having this trapezoid there you're increasing offense because it creates these
races to the puck um you know the offense the offensive team gets it the goalie misplays it
like dude it's single-handedly funding dang it's right now i cannot believe how often goalies
make a mistake um and i don't count swaymans yesterday that was it yeah it hit the glass
i might end up in dang it's because i'm sure swayman saw that and said dang it but um it's uh
it's increased offense so from a a strategic from a competitive standpoint it was kind of bullshit
that they added the rule but now that it's there uh i don't see much reason to take it out because
the nhl talked about all these different ways to increase scoring and i think one of the most
useful tools for increasing offense in the nhl is that rule yeah you got to think about it like
if every single time a team tried to dump the puck into the zone the goalie just hit it out
back in the neutral zone that's essentially what happened like he was so good at getting to that
corner that the puck no team could ever set up offensively because the puck was never there
anymore turco as well yeah so i also want to say that i love it because peter marazic is a leaf
oh because it prevents him from leaving the more we can stop him from handling the puck
peter i hope your groin gets better but the less he handles the puck the better things go
honestly um the it became a running bit that no one cared about because it was in the khl but
when the season i was doing khl highlights pecorino was like the worst professional goalie
in the world because he would always play the puck and because the arena was shaped a little
differently he'd always go too far he'd always give it away and he had a safe percentage of like
870 in the k like he was brutal and then he gets gets back to the nhl and he's great yeah made no
sense i don't have an answer for this one but this one's from noodle man 1510 i like noodles
they say from all for all three of you jesse adam and the other guy what's your favorite sports
conspiracy theory you guys have a conspiracy theory from a professional sport hockey i assume
for you steve anything else for you adam that you think's happened that you're kind of like oh i
think that thing well the the there's a couple of them obviously the toronto maple leafs montreal
canadians finals in the early 90s that should have been but you know betman wanted la and instead
uh i i think that frankly um carrie fraser just missed the call and i don't think there was a
thing the michael jordan having to leave basketball because and this is dark and they address it in
the documentary but the idea the thing he was because he was a big gambler and he ran up they
say he ran up some debts and then people came for him but instead they got his dad or something
like because his dad remember tragically passed away i don't like that one because it literally
his dad died there's a 30 for 30 on it and it's yeah it's real dark so it's real dark and it comes
to no conclusions yeah and but i don't think it's true so what they said was michael you're gonna
have to step away from the game and do something else and he went and played baseball and that's
why he played baseball that's the those are the ones that come to mind do i have a favorite though
see like i was about to say uh the leafs meant to sign kurt sauer instead of jeff finger that's
not a conspiracy theory that is a uh that's an urban legend like a conspiracy theory involves
conspiring yeah right yeah hmm in the nhl man can we get back to that like on another episode
yeah i want to think about it it's a good question also if you have any respond to him in the discord
because uh oh maybe that's what this becomes then yeah we can just read people's other people's ones
maybe we find out ones we've never seen before yeah we already know the discord knows more than
us like oh let's hive mind oh yeah was the 2005 lottery rigged for the penguins to get crosby
and save the pittsburgh penguins uh as a franchise because they were in dire uh situation that's a
conspiracy theory and and you know what uh smart business move yeah okay if it's true i mean i got
to give that one to betman was that specific one rigged you could convince me but are they always
rigged 2015 was the death of that yeah do you think there's ever been a rigged lottery
because the i know patrick ewing in the nba the conspiracy is that they rigged it for him to go
to the knicks really yeah that's that's an that's an nba conspiracy fans i think fans always like
to think that the lottery is rigged but of course do you think it's possible do you think i don't
know crosby going to the penguins is the most convenient first overall pick ever ever like
we're talking about the most unique lottery in nhl history yeah because it followed um a year-long
lockout so they didn't go based on the standings they went based on the standings i want to say
like a three-year average standings and how many times you had won the lottery previously like i'm
pretty sure the penguins didn't even have good odds listen that's crazy it's like 2003 they won
2004 they got second
and because of that I believe that
decreased their chances and they got
fucking Crasby I don't know enough
about the NBA in the 80s other than
it was a fucking disaster zone
like they were playing a half full arenas
and they needed stars
and like you know the
family that owns the Blackhawks
sold the Bulls because they're like this franchise is
bullshit we'd rather have the Hawks the Wurtz's used to own
the Bulls the Wurtz's used to own the Bulls
and the Blackhawks and I think that
wasn't the white no what risedorf owns the white sock doesn't he jerry risedorf who owns the bulls
now yeah he's the one that bought it from anyway like you imagine the amount of money that the guy
he bought he bought it for like a few million bucks and then like now it's worth several billion
unreal um to me i can't really talk to about talk to how wild the nba would have been in the 80s but
i can tell you that in the modern era i have a hard time believing that any sport would have a
rigged first round pick because more than one person would know about it more than one person
would have to know about it and if more than one person knows then that story leaks we just talked
about how how in sports the walls talk there's no way that that wouldn't have gone out are you
telling me that people are that loyal to gary betman and i and and to be honest like really
are you telling me that no way i am though no effing no i'm kidding there's no way it is it's
the most convenient one like we're not even talking you know oh the oilers were bad and
they got mcdavid isn't that convenient oh the lease were rebuilding and they got matthews
Isn't that convenient?
No, no.
The Penguins were going to move.
Right.
They were going to go.
And they got the greatest player since Gretzky.
Pretty convenient.
And good.
I'm glad they're still here.
It says here the Penguins were one of four clubs tied with the best chance of winning the lottery.
There you go.
Whoops.
Yeah, there you go.
So what were the odds?
I don't know.
Who were the other clubs?
Do you know that?
I don't have to.
I just have that sentence.
This article is debunking sports conspiracy theories, and that was one of them.
You know what's crazy, Adam, is the Caps were probably one of the teams.
The Rangers were one of the teams?
They were?
Yeah.
They were pretty bad.
Oh, yeah, they were.
Early 2000s.
They spent a lot of money on teams that did nothing.
Yeah.
The first thing when you type in 2005 draft lottery is rigged.
Ah!
it does make sense that people would think that some things sometimes truth is is it's so
convenient it feels like a conspiracy but i don't i don't actually think you just could never keep
something like that quiet if that ever got out you know you're talking about a commissioner that
has to step down they're like because literally at again it goes it comes down to gambling now
imagine saying to vegas with their odds oh we've we rigged our first round pick
now definitely bet on our sport we're definitely worth the bet i think you know what i think that
lottery happened my first day at the zoo it's 2005 it was summer 2005 i remember getting the
news at the zoo and i was like oh yeah 2005 oh that means i was like on my phone but no i probably
wouldn't have got it on my phone it was 2005 right someone probably just like heard and told me so i
i don't think it was rigged but reading this i think they set up the situation so that it would
be more favorable for a new york or pittsburgh especially pittsburgh this is how they determined
uh the lottery ball odds from wikipedia teams were weighted based on playoff appearances in
the last three completed seasons and the first overall picks in the last four drafts three
lottery balls each were assigned to teams which had not qualified for any of those playoffs
and received no first overall picks in that period.
But the Penguins did, though.
That seems so arbitrary.
Yes, I understand what you're saying.
That seems like you're making up rules
so that the Penguins are one of four teams
to have a real good shot at this.
You know what I mean?
If they got a first overall pick, it benefited them?
No, so the Penguins didn't have...
They did, though, in 2003.
They had the first overall pick.
Marc-Andre Fleury.
or was but they got they got three balls so i guess because their playoff their playoff
appearances were zero zero so they got weighted uh heavily on the no playoff of x appearances
so they got three balls this would be oh three oh four oh two oh three and oh one oh two teams
which had one playoff appearance or first overall overall pick in those years were given two lottery
balls the post all the other teams received one so the odds were still even though they were good
they're fairly minuscule yeah because they're like one okay anybody who had not qualified for
the playoffs in the last three years you get four you get three balls that's so how many balls were
in that lottery then so it had to be like dozens four teams had three uh 12 two balls went to one
2 3 4 5 6
7 8 9 10 teams
12 plus 20 and then the rest
received one ball so that's
48 lottery balls
and the penguins own three of them
yeah and three of the 48 and they won
teams
with three balls had a 6.3
chance
two ball two balls 4.2
one ball
2.1% me I don't
know you guys
you know what'd be fun is if you could set up a simulator to see how
many times you could do it before you hit the penguins that's true oh man i don't know doesn't
strike me as i know but to be honest with you i think we can all agree it was the best outcome
for the league yes who'd the leafs get that year i don't know took a risk yeah all right all right
Well, listen, with that, we'll wrap the show.
With that, we'll be depressed.
Yeah.
