the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake
oh well you know what it's the day before the day it is truly hockey eve welcome to it we are so
excited there's lots going on and it's lockdown day or lockdown part two in ontario bit of a
Dark day for us Ontarians.
But there's hockey coming, and there's help coming,
and there's entertainment coming, and we're very excited about that.
We are on our first two-episode week of the year,
and we will be this way until the end of the first week of free time.
Yeah, it's going to be a long, long go here.
I think, what, probably the end of July, guys?
Oh, yeah, that might bleed into the next year.
Yeah, so, yeah.
Well, cause yeah, July is going to be ridiculously action-packed.
I'm going to take this off. It was a cool idea to start going, man.
It's okay. No, no, we'll I, you know,
end of July cause we got the expansion draft this year too.
We get to talk about which marginal prospect I care about this time.
And the draft and free agency and Oh yeah.
Stanley cup final, all that fun stuff. July is going to be great,
but screw all that. It's January. We're about to kick it off. That's right.
let's go lots to do today including uh we're going to do go through the north and west divisions
and our predictions for that uh we've obviously got to talk about evander kane willie oree and
hayley salvin will join us in about 40 minutes to talk about the flames and of course uh also
the nwhl because that kicks off very very soon big tournament big hockey rights and hayley as
you know covered the nwhl for a long long time so we're going to kind of get a bird's eye view
of what that means for that particular league yes jesse and a new podcast a new podcast that
already podcast yes that's right alien ian mendez uh we're actually gonna have we have a big lineup
this week um jesse actually said that charts are stupid uh last episode not just charts charts and
robots and computers and everything wow so dom decision will be on to refute said evidence
Oh, you did book him?
Oh, God.
That's so good.
We've also got Ian Mendez coming on to talk about his new role with The Athletic
and his new podcast with Haley, and there's a lot going on.
So I just can't – Dom versus Jesse is going to be huge.
That's a heavyweight bout.
We're talking about logic and reason versus the word no.
It's going to be amazing.
No.
The embodiment of no.
No with a beard.
Steve, heads up, your gain is a little high on your microphone, my friend.
Oh, my bad.
It's okay.
my bad here how's that listen it's the first episode of the new season we gotta be you know
we gotta tweak a little now sorry i was i cheated on you i was i was doing uh uh the curious
competitor podcast with connor carrick yesterday so i'd have had to adjust my settings you guys
compare leg sizes uh we didn't um because we didn't want to be like hey look one is large
and one is tiny yeah fair enough now uh tiny and also hairy going forward we're going to be doing
the show on Mondays and Thursdays,
just so you know. From now on, it's Mondays and Thursdays.
Expect our shows, because that's when they're happening.
When do we record them? In the afternoon.
So if you message us Monday morning and go,
where's the show? Because it hasn't been recorded yet,
so it's not going to be on until Monday nights
and probably Thursday nights,
so just be ready for that.
Say that, Adam, on a Tuesday.
Yeah, yeah. Also, let's throw this out there.
We, unfortunately,
because we did not do a show yesterday,
did not get to mark a very special occasion. Jesse?
After review,
the call on the ice
then
we got a goal
I can do better than that
ladies and gentlemen happy birthday Wes McCauley
I hope we can have Wes McCauley
on one day
I don't know how we would do that
you think Wes McCauley's a hard get
for an interview?
we'd have him on the show
I think you're, I think less
yeah
I think we need to get Wes McCauley on the show
oh my hand
happy birthday Wes McCauley
you've hurt Steve's hand by making him slap the carpet
in fake laughter
oh god
no one irrationally dislikes
Wes McCauley more than Steve Dangle
we don't quite understand it's not that i dislike him i think he's very important for the sport
i just think the bar is lower in hockey let's talk about it so anyway happy birthday west
mccauley and uh you know what listen there's lots to be excited for this season lots to be
pumped like what well i mean listen joe give me one example line give me anything i'm excited to
see joe thornton skate 15 minutes a game i want to see how that's going to work on the top um
on the top line i want to know how that possibly happened well did you see he was on waivers
he you know what i didn't see that i i saw that cory perry was on waivers oh sorry you you could
see how i get them confused all the time though so what's two players who are always confused for
each other what's the story there because there's somebody that there's obviously an inside joke
here and if you're not on twitter all the time you don't catch this stuff but i'm seeing a lot of
are there people like that rory perry remarks what's going on steve like what happened here
okay so let me pull it up and i will say i hold no ill will toward this person i was just very
caught off guard by his tweet um oh dear he had to issue a response oh um he said he said joe
this is michael traco sorry uh of uh who does he write for now post media uh joe thornton is on
the leafs top line while the habs carry price or sorry carry cory perry my god is on waivers
what am i missing here and that tweet has a thousand likes 114 retweets and 174 replies so
he didn't get ratio too hard there's a little bit of ratio in there what is what is he missing i
don't understand the tweet what he's so basically he's going joe thornton is getting an opportunity
on the Leafs' top line.
Corey Perry has put on waivers.
What am I missing here?
Basically, because I guess the implication is
Corey Perry is either not going to make the Habs
or barely going to make the Habs.
He'll be on the taxi squad or something,
whereas Joe Thornton is immediately getting an opportunity
on the first line.
Who was this?
Who did you say?
Michael Treykos.
Didn't Corey Perry score a couple goals
in the Stanley Cup final too?
He scored.
He had a fantastic Stanley Cup final.
I think here's the thing with Corey.
Aren't they trying to just...
don't they want him to be maneuverable between the taxi squad and stuff?
Like, he's clearly a vet.
Like, I don't know.
That's probably what he's missing, right?
Like, is he a Leafs homer?
I think he's a Leafs writer, but I think he writes nationally.
And I will say this.
I have heard among Toronto media, one of the best hockey players.
Of the media?
Yeah.
Supposedly, every time there's, like, a media game somewhere,
he just wrecks.
Like, he's just supposedly.
It's not like I've ever been in them.
We'll put Jesse in front of him and see what happens.
Yeah.
See if he can get past the amazing Norris defense.
That's what we always call him.
We call him Spidey because of those long arms.
Yeah.
That's right.
Yeah, for sure.
But in all honesty.
Okay, so I didn't understand that because I saw that going around yesterday.
I'm like, I must have missed something.
I don't get to see that stuff as much anymore.
I'm not as up to date on that, and I sort of wish I was.
But I do miss a lot of that stuff on.
Well, I mean, it would help for this show.
there's like a lot of inside twitter jokes that i just don't get anymore um what we do need to do
is go right into the division so we've got the honda nhl west division the division looks like
this anaheim arizona colorado los angeles minnesota san jose st louis and vegas not to
be confused with las vegas guys who are your teams coming out of this there are four teams you can
pick what are they going to be uh i'll go first uh you know every world cup or every euro or
whatever it is they always what do they have the group of death right they have the one group you
don't want to be in sometimes the world juniors has that um this this is it this is it um because
you have there are four spots and three gimmies gimmies you could give me almost any combination
of any seven teams from the north division uh this there's three locks here vegas is making
the playoffs they're elite st louis is making the playoffs they're elite uh colorado is making
the playoffs and frankly if they don't win the stanley cup i'm dying to know how uh they're to
me they're far and away the best team in the national hockey league when healthy yes they
lost in seven games to dallas in overtime but that was the only game michael hutchinson lost
for them in those playoffs they won two of three with michael hudgenson if they had one of grubauer
or franco's i think they might have won the cup or at least made the final so it's those three
lock lock lock lock lock then you got a bunch of you have three california teams that did terribly
and missed the playoffs last year you have arizona who was very up and down and they made the playoffs
because of the bubble and they ended up uh i think they beat the preds and then i can't remember who
oh it was colorado ended up rolling right over them and you got minnesota who's like basically
the definition of mediocrity so uh to me uh for my sports net video i picked an upset here
it was a surprise to us and i think to a lot of the national hockey league how bad the san jose
sharks were last year so i'm betting on them this year with a long layoff with an improvement in
goal granted not a very large one who is that again uh they got devin dubnik to go with martin
jones two struggling goalies who at least get to split the net um eric carlson has had a long time
to get better brent burns like vlasic that's an old team and they've had a lot of time to cure
what ails them so i'm gonna pick the san jose sharks because i have a hard time believing
they got that bad that fast i think they'll be in there jesse i'm just i'm looking at the division
here and i don't know if i agree with steve dangle on how much of a lock three positions are
You're giving a lot of faith to the consistency of the NHL.
And I think year after the NHL proves to us that parity is king
and that randomness when a bouncing puck is bouncing around on ice
will prove to be the winner.
So, with that being said, I'm going to take Arizona to make the playoffs.
Good pick.
I liked what I saw.
I almost picked them.
I liked what I saw in the play-in versus the Preds.
um that big i didn't have them winning that series at all and they did it
they've since lost taylor hall since lost taylor hall are we sure taylor hall is the impact player
we think he is because there's somebody who's this year there's somebody whose stock just drops
every year so i got i mean since 2017 jesse's not wrong where's the wrong so okay all right
So going down the list alphabetically is what I'm doing.
Colorado, I think, is definitely a lock for a playoff spot.
Probably they're my pick also to win the President's Trophy.
I don't think that's a hot take at all.
I think a lot of people would have them as a frontrunner.
Totally.
Then we have Los Angeles, Minnesota, San Jose, St. Louis, Vegas.
So out of that group, Steve had Vegas and St. Louis as locks.
I'm going to take Vegas as a lock
because since Vegas has been a franchise, existed on Earth,
they've dominated the NHL.
So I'm not going to bet against them, but St.
Louis, St.
Louis, there's always a surprise good team who ends up bad.
And I, I don't know if it's just,
I see too many pieces missing from two years ago,
Stanley cup, and maybe just two years, two years, a little older, but I,
I I'm going to pick the Los Angeles Kings to sneak in there as the fourth
team in the division to make the playoffs.
st louis will not make the playoffs out of your mind out of your mind we'll see what happens
their predictions for a reason boy oh boy that's rough i don't i don't i'm not sure who that fourth
team is but i'm not ranking st louis as number one coming out of those bottom extra teams that
i don't see making the playoffs so i'll defend jesse on st louis kings buddy here on your own
but uh between the kings in the wild is what i was going to go with and i stuck with the king
yeah i think the ducks got better i don't know how much um the the the blues so they
lose to the vancouver canucks and a lot of us were surprised uh it was sort of a glossed over
story where uh when they got or when they exited the bubble when they lost yeah well you know a
bunch of our players you know tested positive and you know they battled through camp and everything
And I'm like, but what?
Like it was, they actually sort of kind of cited COVID as a reason why they may not have won.
Which Doug Armstrong said 20% of the players.
Yeah.
That's a wild thing to a say and B be true.
Yeah.
So if it was a factor in the bubble, my Lord, I hope it's no longer a factor, but you can't rule it out.
that's that's a terrifying thing that's i i interesting that you went with um los angeles
man that's crazy but i like the kings betting on them true daddy's a good kid all right so here's
the he's a good kid um now okay so again you look at this like who's the lock chief ace who's the
lock and who's not you got the lock is vegas st louis uh colorado to make it the odds are anaheim
and Arizona I would say and Los Angeles and that leaves you two teams to me Minnesota and San Jose
I'm not an Arizona believer this year I've been an Arizona believer for four years and they have
let me down every year so I'm stopping stopping the nonsense Minnesota and San Jose the thing
with San Jose is obviously Evander Kane situation is hanging in the air and oh god he is playing
they got a much better shot at it but if he's not playing San Jose's not making the playoffs
And I don't think that it's just Evander Kane that's going to be the straw that breaks the camel's back, but we've already got two questionable goaltenders, three defensemen up around the age of 35 that are supposed to be your top minute eaters, and frankly, a team that just does not have the goal-scoring punch that it used to have.
So I'm curious about how San Jose is going to score goals this year.
I'm really surprised they didn't sign Mike Hoffman,
but I suppose that maybe the money wasn't there under the salary cap.
I do know that St. Louis did, which I was like, okay,
much bigger believer in St. Louis now than I was before.
And remember, they were the Stanley Cup winner like 18 months ago.
So it's not that hard to believe in the St. Louis Blues.
I'm going to go with the perennial mediocre team, Minnesota.
minnesota you can rely on for one thing first round exits they are fantastic at making it
to the first round and losing and you see that you know two games of the state of hockey
and then that then they're gone and you know it's sort of like that's what that's what happens with
state or sorry with minnesota and so and they usually lose to what's it been st louis chicago
san jose a million other teams along the way um i don't expect them to go very far but i do believe
the minnesota star north stars uh oh is it the wild sorry i believe that they're gonna make it
sadly you got three titans and then the minnesota wild so i'm gonna take the minnesota wild so we
all had different picks in that division which i think is interesting underrated thing with the
wild adam uh their back half before the pause of the season was one of the better ones in the league
they did a really solid job well maybe i make elite picks then so you know have we thought
about that uh scotia nhl north division calgary edmonton montreal ottawa toronto vancouver
winnipeg guys this is going to be a hotly contested division because not that there are any
there are no proven elite teams in this division no none none like you could say that there's elite
talent there's lots of that but no team has put it together i think the furthest that any of them
got last year was vancouver and good good for them but they've lost their big starting goaltender
from that period so let's go through steve who are your picks for the scotia nhl north division
i'll start by saying if any of these seven teams made the playoffs it wouldn't shock me and that
includes the ottawa senators i'm serious um i think this division is as close as it comes
anyone who tells you there's a consensus pick for the top team is a liar uh as evidenced by the way
by the sports net picks today that were tweeted out um i don't think more than three or four
people had the same team um so i'm gonna go with the team that i believe finished with the best
regular season record out of all the canadian teams last year and that's the edmonton oilers
yeah they got embarrassed in the bubble lost the chicago blackhawks and everything
at this stage in his career betting against conor mcdavid is lunacy uh betting against
conor mcdavid and leon dry sidle in the regular season is lunacy and in this division um you get
dragged into the fight which i think is something the oilers really like um that should have worked
against the blackhawks it didn't but uh nine or ten battle of alberta's yeah sign me up for that
every time second i'll go with calgary um that's why it's going to be such a slobber knocker of a
division um i think calgary i've always talked about their biggest weakness being a lack of
identity um their biggest weakness on a lot of nights was dave ridditch was a vesna goalie
followed by he's just kind of an eye backup and now he's backing up jake markstrom like what a
what an enormous upgrade you get you get kind of a cam talbot trying to you know restore his
career versus jake marksman who's coming off like mv cal mvp caliber goaltending so both alberta
teams get in i am gonna say montreal makes the playoffs they had a horrible regular season last
year horrible even if i hadn't seen their performance in the bubble uh i think i would
still probably have them in the top four i might have someone else instead we'll get to them later
but they they just made really good upgrades the anderson contract is atrocious but whatever this
is the first year of seven we'll worry about year seven in seven years this is the first year he's
not going to score one goal i don't know if he's going to score 27 but he's going to do better
to fully's in there their goaltending is really really good their young guys are getting even
better they're going to make it and number four the leafs i can't imagine a scenario where they
finish outside of the top three uh in this division at least when it comes to the regular
season um they could have gone into this division with last year's version of the team which was
full of holes and still made it um but i think that's true
you know what i'm feeling less confident with every second that passes there there were an
eighth seed who didn't make it through the plan yeah you know what you're right but this this
version does make it um and jack campbell is such a huge part of it um you know they went through so
many they went through like slumps that really ended up biting them in the ass uh further into
the season they lost like six or seven straight before they fired babcock and i can't help but
think if they win two or three of those how much different uh even their their bubble scenario
looks uh and then you win another two or three because you have a competent backup uh there's
no way they miss the playoffs i can't tell you how deep they're going to go so edmonton calgary
montreal toronto okay now this is a tough one because there's like i said there's not a lot
of elite teams here but they're all teams that have made the playoffs at least once in the last
couple years with the exception of a new team on the on the scene and a lot of people are overrating
this team in my estimation right off the bat i think they are they're going way too heavy on
the montreal canadiens way too heavy on the montreal canadiens that said i think the montreal
canadians are gonna make the playoffs this year and i i think that they've got they got bigger
tougher meaner up front to fully and anderson are great ads uh let's not forget too that they
short up their defense uh and obviously short up their goaltending as well and spent a lot of money
i think they're spending like uh 12 and a half 13 million bucks just on their goalies 15 50 is it
15 million how much are they paying well no so i want to say alan has a year left on his deal but
then they sign him to an extension so i have it here it's alan this year makes 4.35
oh i had it 10.5 and then next year alan will make uh 2.875 yeah i had it reversed and i don't
know how you mess with uh you know like like tyler toffoli is playing on the third line on this team
tatar dino gallagher drew and suzuki anderson toffoli kaken yami armia those are that's a
Really, really strong top nine.
And then, of course, Ben Sherratt, Che Weber, Joel Edmondson, Jeff Petrie.
And I know there's some people that are not necessarily huge Joel Edmondson fans,
but I think he's solid and he does what he does.
And Alexander Romanov is kind of a wild card, but I'm excited to see him play.
So I definitely think the Montreal Canadiens make it.
I definitely think they make it.
I'm going to go off the board a little bit here.
I think what's going to matter the most in this division,
because there's a ton of firepower, is your goaltending.
Adam's boy.
Say it.
Adam's boy.
The Winnipeg Jets are making the playoffs, guys.
Connor Hellebuck, Vezna Trophy winner, not going to make the playoffs?
I wouldn't bet on it.
The Winnipeg Jets haven't changed all that much.
In fact, I think they've got better.
Paul Stastny on the second line, playing with Patrick Laine,
who can score 50 goals with the right centerman.
I can guarantee you, if Patrick Laine was playing with Mark Shifley,
Patrick Laine would be a perennial 50-goal score.
There's no question about it.
And it makes me, I do question why they don't play him there.
I know that there's a bunch of reasons that are like outside of hockey,
but from a pure skill perspective, hats off to Blake Wheeler,
but seriously, it's got to be Patrick Laine on the top line to me.
But that's why they brought in Stastny,
because he got along so well on that Western Conference run
a couple of years ago where they lost to Vegas.
It's heartbreaking.
I think if you've got a goalie coming off of a performance
like Connor Hellebuck put on, a team that's got some confidence,
that isn't worried about goofy pucks going in,
I think the Winnipeg Jets are going to sneak into the playoffs this year.
And I know that doesn't make me a popular man,
but I definitely think they've got it.
Thirdly.
It's popular in Winnipeg.
Thirdly.
And this is what it comes down to, guys.
I'm going with goaltending here.
And that means that the Calgary Flames are also going to make the playoffs this year.
Calgary Flames have a pretty incredible, as Steve mentioned, set of goalies.
Rittich and Markstrom.
And Markstrom played great hockey last year.
He was the backbone of the Vancouver Canucks.
and I don't know how they lose him and Tanev in the same season.
Now, you might say to me, Adam, those six-year deals for those guys
or whatever Tanev's sign was at four years,
they're older, they're in their 30s, whatever.
We're talking about just this year.
We're talking about older guys who've had a ton of rest
and just this year.
And just this year, Markstrom and Tanev make Calgary so much better.
This is a team that needed –
I don't know what was wrong with Calgary other than, you know,
they had some fluky goals go in and that sort of thing, but they just,
they just, for whatever reason, last couple of seasons, there, the,
there was, I don't know if it was an attitude or a culture or whatever,
but I think what Chris Tanev bring brought to the Vancouver Canucks is the
kind of thing Chris Tanev will bring to the Calgary flames.
I think he's going to be a leader in that dressing room and he's going to
set the tone and make them a little less afraid.
Even when he loses a step, he'll have value.
Yes. 100%. It's a mentality thing. It's like Joe Thornton, right?
yeah he's obviously lost a step and he obviously brings something more than two busted knees
100 and when you've got Matthews and Marner flying around which brings me to my fourth team
to make the playoffs it really doesn't matter the Toronto Maple Leafs will make the playoffs
Freddie Anderson will have a bounce back season I've been tough on Freddie I've been really tough
on Freddie and rightfully so I think a lot of people have he didn't have a great year last year
But let's not count out how bad Michael Hutchinson's year was.
If you have half of the points back from the games,
even if you haven't had the two points from that Montreal game
that kicked off Michael Hutchinson's season,
it's a different game.
It's a different team.
You start your season with three straight wins.
Exactly.
In regulation.
Is Babcock still the coach?
I wonder.
You know, that's the thing.
That happened last year.
Happened last season.
this is Sheldon Keefe's first go around as the coach through training camp it feels like eons
ago because it was 2019 it's crazy what a great question what a great question you might be right
man it was the beginning of the end there's no question and that the teams just seem downtrodden
and shitty after that frankly I also think there are some uh some the reason the Leafs I think are
going to be so strong this year is there is some depth options that they just didn't have before
So, last year, if you have a Kasperi Kapanen or Andreas Janssen go down, you don't have anybody to replace them.
Now, they shouldn't sink the entire ship.
I agree with you.
But you don't have a guy coming up from the minors who can shoot a puck like Nick Robertson.
And he might be outmatched in certain situations.
He might feel small in certain situations.
Right now, kid's 19.
What a shot that guy has.
And he is going to draw in half the games this year.
And that's going to be just fine.
He doesn't need to play every night yet.
But boy, he's going to be playing with the Marlies.
He's going to get called up to the Leafs because injuries are going to happen.
And Nick Robertson, I think, is going to be a real X factor for them just in terms of depth options.
You know that there's going to be injuries.
Any lineup roster that has Spezza and Thornton on it, they're going to need some rest.
So if you're a forward with the Toronto Maple Leafs, you're going to be called on a lot of time to carry some extra load when those guys go down.
And I'm going to go look through the roster here for just a second because I don't think it's just him.
The other guy that is really, really interesting coming out of camp is Adam Brooks, who has displaced Pierre Engvall on the center chart, which is, you know, that's a huge changeover from the beginning of last season, which was in 2019.
Let me remind you, Adam Brooks was a guy that they thought probably doesn't have it.
I think I think Pierre Engvall has better tools than Adam Brooks and could end up being better than him.
but at this point he's got a $1.25 million contract and Brooks takes care of
the puck better.
Like a peer angle.
How do you get called out by the coach after a scrimmage?
That's right.
That's tough,
man.
And it shows you how disappointed in him they are.
Supposedly he has one point in his last 25 NHL games.
And that was a goal against David Ayers.
Yeah.
His last goal was,
was it March?
Was it February 22nd?
February 22nd was David Airs.
Those I know Pierre Engvall has got more money,
but David Airs,
it was him dinner because that goal gave him the win.
A hundred percent.
A hundred percent.
So I think the Toronto Maple Leafs make it.
Now I know people are like,
you're freaking crazy.
The Edmonton Oilers,
not going to make the playoffs.
I'm surprised,
man.
So here's the thing.
I don't have a hate on for Edmonton.
I think it's going to be a battle all the way to the end.
But Steve,
Steve mentioned something I think is really important.
First off from a goaltending,
purely goaltending lens,
the Edmonton Oilers goaltending is just,
it's just weaker than the how do you bring back smith how do you do it i don't know and and how
old is mike smith this is is he 40 now um that i don't know so then you've got you've got an
incredible team you've got such crazy crazy talent but you know you get past because i don't believe
clef bomb is going to be playing for the first little bit no you got darnell nurse and ethan
bear i love ethan bear big fan caleb jones and adam larson who's lost his step and already was
slow and then on your third pair and and you know this may be the Toronto Maple Leaf fan in me but
Chris Russell and Tyson Berry both guys who are horrendous in their own zone like you couldn't
have put two guys less effective in their own zone on the same team like like it's just it's it's
almost good Branson Johnson level like it's such a bad this is not a good pairing that's a great
coach that's a fire drill that's a fire drill now though they probably won't get a lot of defensive
zone starts right as we know um the issue I have is for Tyson Berry's sake who's going to get back
for him who's going to wheel and turn around when he pinches on a five-on-five situation I
understand he's going to be great in the playoffs sorry in the playoffs on the power play with um
McDavid and Dreisaitl like oh my god what a dream scenario for a guy like him but if you're going to
put Chris Russell with him I don't know how if they can't keep the puck in the zone like you
better have the McDavid line out there because if they can't keep the puck in the zone they're in
serious trouble people are talking about barry like he's a clef bomb replacement on the power
play for sure absolutely like he's he's great he put up 40 points in like a terrible season last
year he he can do it but the just the fact that you said he's starting on the third pair come on
he's he's not a clef bomb replacement no he's not at five on five not even close be interesting to
see what ethan bear does in that role though and when clef bomb if is clef bomb coming back this
year i know he's had no he's done for the year he has done oh is he done for the entire year
yeah he had shoulder surgery he's not going to be back yeah so there you go right like it's
that's rough now you look at their top line eugene hopkins mcdavid zach cassian not bad
uh kahun dry saddle yamamoto who i love but there's a lot of question marks in this lineup
when you get to the third line kyle turris what is kyle turris right now what is he anymore
is he is he was he unfairly criticized because his contract was so big or is he just not
good anymore yes he pulled yarvey we know that there's some exciting tools there but he hasn't
played in the nhl in two years like literally since 2019 it's different and even then that
was a bad oilers team yeah this is supposed to be a playoff oilers team josh archibald is josh
archibald tyler ennis is tyler ennis drew jarkara is drew jarkara alex chase on is alex chase on
you know what you're getting with that fourth line and really the fourth line shouldn't make
or break a team right but my question is that third line when you need dry silent mcdavid to
have a minute are you going to be able to cut trust any of those bottom six guys to be able
to handle it and i understand like oh well they're both perennial heart trophy candidates does it
matter it matters a little bit matters a little bit and again you're goaltending for me i i've
never been a huge miko koskinen fan um and mike smith for sure is not high on my list either
anymore I mean Mike Smith in 2012 absolutely Olympic team Mike Smith sure uh and you're lost
you've lost James Neal and you've lost a lot while James Neal's day-to-day right now and Oscar
Kleffbaum is out so assuming James Neal gets back to health you might have a lot more scoring punch
up there with Connor McDavid I just not sold on them I'm a big fan of Mike Smith 25 percent of
the time yes like he's he's got two modes like unbeatable and unplayable like it's it's he's a
bizarre guy bizarre goalie vancouver's the other one that's gonna piss a lot of people off i know
there's a lot of canucks fans listening right now who are like screw you guys and i understand that
i would say the same thing i think more of them agree with you than you think really oh yeah i i
it's funny with vancouver i mean i thought the hammock pickup was pretty shrewd because he
wasn't bad um and nate schmidt what a great get but when you talk about what they lost this off
season because they had to because they had to they're going to be an incredibly dynamic team
like quinn hughes and nate schmidt on the same team is really cool but they relied so heavily
on markstrom and what a lot of canucks fans don't say out loud thatcher demko was not good last
season he had three legendary games in the bubble legendary three without question Michael Hutchinson
didn't get like millions of dollars because he played three good games in the bubble well that's
that's because he didn't but he happened to win um you know but it's it's three games he got really
hot for three games I think he's got potential uh this is totally different he's going to be
getting like 50 of the net it's that or an old brayden holtby well and and and that's the question
is what is brayden holtby now what is he's been good for a couple years right so and and and so
it'll be very very interesting if so they're to me from a goal-getting perspective it's an issue
i'd like to see also with when with the two uh playoff teams or non-playoff teams um i i'd like
to see matt murray get back on track i know that the senators are not allowed to make the playoffs
obviously but i want i want to see a guy like matt murray it seems to he seems too young to not be
good anymore he's too young to be washed yeah what is he 26 uh might even be younger so like you know
it's it's i feel like ottawa's got a really bright future i'm a huge brandist room guy uh stutzel
seems like just money uh what an x factor well and i guess we'll talk to don decision about that
later on yeah yeah we'll talk to him next episode about it and obviously we can talk to hayley a
little bit about it ian mendez next episode there's lots of interesting stuff going on in ottawa
obviously i just don't think this is their year so toronto montreal winnipeg calgary are my picks
for the north division now uh guys we do need to talk quickly about um some of the people that will
be on the panels this year uh for nbc jesse who are you for vancouver toronto didn't you already
pick no no i normally
for some reason i thought that oh okay my bad jesse go ahead sorry i was trying to go steve
jesse me i don't know i'm sorry ed uh no go ahead adam adam and i sort of took 20 minutes each i for
some reason i thought i had i had asked you man i i honestly did i don't know what happens anyway
well we were going to talk about uh about nbc and the panel changes mike milbury will not be back
mike babcock in what do we think so wait you're telling me mike babcock
made the list sorry i just i don't feel good about that i don't feel good about that um it's okay so
i'm i'm torn on this i think we can all agree that like mike melbury's
that that ship sailed yeah we're done here it's i mean he got he got kicked out of the bubble
frankly right or did he voluntarily step aside i don't know how that worked um i don't even
remember what he said that was several decades ago he said it was he he compared it he said what
is he said it's quiet in here isn't it like a college women's hockey game yeah but then he said
two things i want to say that was the first wasn't that the first one yeah the other thing he said
was uh he was like oh he's happy the guys are in the bubble because they won't be distracted by
women something oh yeah yeah that was the one that got him uh removed from the broadcast that
was like the second right well and that's never came back on to do a game it's too i want to say
it was like still the play-in it's like okay we're we're done here um adding babcock the babcock
rehabilitation tour has officially begun i guess and first of all i i can't picture him as an
analyst at all like just ignoring everything i can't picture him as an analyst um it's you can't
just give little quips about italian sausages at a tfc game like you got to actually break stuff
down and like have a personality and not not everyone who you think would be good at it ends
up being good at it john tortorella sucked like he was not he was not a good analyst and he very
clearly did not enjoy it um but on the note of the mike babcock rehabilitation tour
does he deserve what what does he deserve does he deserve to coach again at some point
does he deserve this sort of gig because there are people out there who would say
no and there were people out there who as he was you know being basically publicly shunned
there were people out there going well that happened to me my entire upbringing like my
entire hockey career um so you know we shouldn't be criticizing him for that he shouldn't be fired
for that um and he certainly shouldn't be shunned from the sport for that so he's a fascinating one
to me because i'm honestly i'm not sure how i feel about him well i think you should be able
to coach again i don't see why not like you know i it's it's one thing there i'm willing to bet
there are worse coaches currently coaching yeah in the nhl level you mean because of what he did
to mitch martin that's well that's number one right but then there's like johan franzen there
there are people who i didn't know were capable of hate who hate him right even spets up you know
that stuff like opening night like yeah but that that's not like a slight the franzen story is what
is it steve it was like where i want to say he was recovering from a concussion or something like
that and basically babcock did something that like made him cry um and like i don't know let's
just have the conversation as men. Like I've had a boss who was a male who made me cry in this
industry. Um, I, I, sometimes I look back at it with a little bit of ill will, but for the most
part, I'm like, well, he, he was a good teacher and I did learn a lot. And I'm also glad that
it's over if that makes sense i have bosses like that right so it's it's a fascinating conversation
like we're not the conversation we're having right now is not is mike babcock a good person
um is he likable even that's not the conversation mike keenan is the only coach in hockey history
to win a stanley cup and a gagarin cup he's he's won in arguably the two best leagues in the world
no one else has ever done it um you know nick kiprios talks about him in the book
um i was listening to him on i think it was on craig custance's podcast and
you know he's basically like wow how could i argue he's a bad coach you know what i mean and
if you look at babcock's career for the most part he's been a good coach so it's basically people
are talking about him like him what what he brings is as toxic as what mike milbury brings
well i mean i i can't really speak to that but what i can say is that you can change coaching
styles uh and that might have been what was acceptable back then and clearly it was because
i mean gretzky even hated keenan uh that was the reason he didn't resign in st louis he hated him
um but it was he was there for like two months yeah couldn't stand that that was quick like
Mike Keenan rode Gretzky and it was like, like was on him.
I mean, Gretzky's like, well, I don't need this shit.
Get out of here.
I'm Wayne Gretzky.
Get out of my face.
So I think, I think, I think you could change that kind of style.
And I think, you know, I mean, you're never gonna get like a public apology from Mike
or an admission that he was wrong.
I think he's too proud for that.
But certainly if the, if the behavior changes, you know, we know so much more now about human
motivation than we did 20 years ago.
that was what people thought motivated you you know that's what yeah that's how they they thought
that they could get through to people and what they have found is that that's not the case
in fact for most people it makes them uh it makes them fail and so for a head coach you need to be
able to say well i i obviously was wrong in the in the past i was trying to push buttons i was
trying to get there i don't think i don't know maybe i'm wrong here um i think i i'm not condoning
anything that mike babcock did but he he it seemed when he was the coach of the leafs he would make
choices intentionally that made the team worse and i think that's that's my biggest problem if
i'm a gm is if i lock horns with mike babcock am i going to get a power struggle on overlying
combinations for the players that i bring in right and that's that's kind of the the issue i would
see with him obviously treatment of players can't be the same and that would be the first conversation
i would have explain to me the mitch marner situation explain to me this johan franzen
situation and i mean explain it explain your your perspective on it and if he says to you as a gm
listen i i made a mistake i was wrong and here's what happened and he owns up to it mike babcock
still a very good nhl coach very very very good as a coach analyst sorry jesse just one quick thing
as a coach analyst at some point they're going to be like it seems like there's something wrong
with team x's dressing room what would you do how would you manage that personality what the
hell answer is he going to have yep is what i'm curious about sorry jesse do you guys not take
anything away from the fact that we're sitting here over a year later after he was fired he
still doesn't have a job in the nhl do you not think somebody if he was like open to take a job
and like people wanted him on a team he would have that by now well from a purely financial
perspective whatever NBC pays him goes on top of what the Leafs are paying him if he goes back to
the NHL he works for the same amount of money right so there's there is that I also think um
I I feel like he cannot go back to the NHL until he does something like this
I think your teams are probably waiting for the heat to cool down
a little bit on Babcock
for the public to warm up to him
again and for fan
bases to warm up to the possibility of he might
coach your team.
He's not done. He's not an
old man. No.
Either. I think back to
the 16-17 season
and this is when this
all happened with Mitch.
We had nothing but praise for him
because the results were amazing.
I want to say he was a nominee for the
Jack Adams. He was. We all
praised his coaching style um and now in hindsight and with new information it's like okay sure he
got the most out of that team but at what cost well there's a there's a point at which law and
order just becomes a swinging fist right where you can over clamp and i think that's what he did
when they when they stopped performing to the or when he stopped being able to get the most out of
the team instead of just letting them loose he clamped down even part even harder and that's
when you start to lose people and coaches have an expiry date and we know that too uh so yeah i
think he coaches again but i think he's got to prove that he can connect to millennials because
that's the majority of the nhl players now they're mental they're millennials even gen z
i keep i'll shout it from the rooftop ron hainsey is a millennial
he is yes he is he is joe thornton is like two or three years removed from being a millennial i
think he's one of two or three gen x's in the league still so he's got to decide whether or
not he wants to do that so Mike and Mike's got enough money that he never has to work again so
we'll see uh the Boston Bruins are welcoming uh Willie O'Ree's number or retiring Willie O'Ree's
number to the rafters number 22 um finally it's it's it's uh it is sort of funny um yeah I was
thinking about today the uh the way that baseball has honored Jackie Robinson and Jackie was a star
and Willie O'Ree uh wasn't a superstar player when he was playing but the the breaking of the
color barrier is pretty much the same um i think the nhl's got some catching up to do but it is
nice to see that he's in the hall of fame and it's nice to see the bruins retire that number
and it would be kind of nice i don't know if the nhl did what um baseball did and you know there's
that game every every year that's the jackie robinson game everybody wears 42 be really nice
if the nhl did something like that i would really like to see that you know you can have the
different name plates on the back of your jersey but i'd really like to see everybody wear 22 for
night to honor that yeah it would it would be cool and yeah jackie robinson is this special
figure like you said because he was a star um we we valued it you know how good you were at the game
too much in this story and for way too long um i mean the the bravery you know people were talking
about the bravery of willio reed to you know uh break the color barrier forget that he played
partially blind yeah yeah which is yeah how how how i uh his his career his story his his
everything is something the nhl should honor they've started to write that wrong he was far
too small of a footnote in the sport for too long um and this is just another step of them writing
that wrong and i think that's good yeah and one thing i don't people i don't think people
appreciate enough is how recent in history it is it was he was 1958 when he played his first game
so his first black player to play in the nhl 63 years ago and you gotta think like how many of
our parents aren't even 63 you know like my dad was born the year before yeah it's not a long time
ago it's very recent history that there was literally zero black players to play in the nhl
and it seems like okay now we're trying to really appreciate these things and like
give it some recognition i think there's probably recognition too that the
um the makeup of north america uh has changed a lot i think there's um frankly i mean especially
in in toronto there's been an enormous demographic shift um and i think the nhl for a long time
courted a specific type of person and now understands hey we've we've by doing that we
have completely cut out everybody else and uh and so I mean I think I hate to put it in these terms
but let me just put it this way if there were more black people in the sport earlier on I think
Willie O'Ree would have been honored earlier on does that make sense so if if you've got you know
like in in baseball i mean as as soon as jackie robinson broke in it was like a whole different
ball game right it was it was really like they they sort of once they turned that corner and
obviously it took a long time you look at the baseball players in the 70s 80s and 90s prominent
black superstars prominent um didn't see much of that in the nhl i i don't know if i've told
this story in the podcast before but there was a there was a pre-tournament game for it was either
2009 or the 2010 world juniors camera uh it was the year it was tavaris versus headman so i think
canada won that year i want to say it was the jordan everly 5.4 goal that year so it was a
pre-tournament game at what was then the air canada center canada versus sweden and they're
they were doing the anthems and they go across the,
you know,
they take the camera and they go across all the players and they went
across team Canada and they went across Sweden.
And I want to say they came across,
I think it was Marco Wu.
Yeah.
Do you remember Marco?
Yeah,
I don't know.
He was,
he signed a contract with the Leafs.
He's goalie and he's black and he was on team Sweden.
And I still remember the,
like the murmurs around the building.
And people weren't making fun of them, but they were just like,
Sweden's got a black goalie?
Basically, blah, blah, blah, blah.
And I cannot find the clip anywhere.
Like, if I could find a broadcast of the game, you'd be able to hear it.
You'd probably, if the crowd was mic'd up well enough.
And that was 2009.
Right.
That happened in Toronto.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So, to say we're behind is understating it.
Jesse, you make a really good point.
It's pretty recent history that this happened
and then sort of went ignored for a long time.
But Willie O'Ree will finally kind of get the recognition he deserves.
And I think the only sad part is that nobody is going to be
in the Boston Garden or TD Garden to see it.
That part of it sucks.
Like, I feel like I know that they need to do this.
I know that they need to raise his jersey to the banners.
But when they're allowed to have games back,
that man deserves his standing ovation in front of you know Boston Bruins fans and I sincerely
hope that they do that uh and I hope that we're able to in the fall I mean Dr. Fauci was saying
probably be able to see concerts and indoors in indoor uh events spaces in the fall um you know
I I hope that they bring him back and say here is the ceremony you you truly deserve um because I
think it's one of those things where yes it's nice to see the the jersey go up to the rafters and
to be incredible for his family and it always be there but i definitely also think that standing
of ovation is a big part of it and i would really really love to see that i think that would be
incredible so uh hoping for that all right bringing on hayley salvian of the athletic now
following the calgary flames hayley are you in calgary yeah i am i actually didn't really i said
in my text i think to jesse like oh i was in a meeting i definitely just missed that next up my
time zone it's three lies i was in a meeting but i also didn't realize that it was 3 p.m
right for you guys standard time that's right sorry we'll make sure to make that uh next time
so it's it's one o'clock there in calgary and obviously hey you see you just started this like
then you're you're in cal what do you think of the city because i've lived out there want to know
what your thoughts are yeah I really like it I actually got to go out to the Rockies one of my
first days here I had a friend who lived here in Calgary she unfortunately was laid off but her
last day was like two days after I got here so we both kind of you know met in the Rockies and kind
of distance walked and she kind of showed me some cool spots outside and it was gorgeous at
canmore is beautiful um banff national park is breathtaking like it photos don't do it justice
it's just it's crazy like there's wild horses walking in the highway it's like ontario toronto
could never no um so it's been really nice and the city's great i'm in a good area it's um
compared to ottawa like i can walk to the saddle dome quicker than it took me to drive to canadian
entire center out in Kanata so uh it's nice it's a great city it's been a good adjustment so far
is it helpful having the the city's arena in the city
yes yes talkingly uh Haley uh uh what are the kinds of protocols you have to follow to get
because you're you guys are actually allowed in to to see some of the practices in the training
camp and I know uh you know the Leafs guys out here have been quietly like they're not letting
this in what what are the uh what are the protocols for you guys yeah so we have daily
covid screening that we have to go through before we can get into the arena and we have
temperature checks as well um and then we're a different level of access to the saddle dome as
well so we don't get to go in the locker room we don't even get to be anywhere near the lower bowl
in the 100 levels so the media sits um in the 200s so the upper bowl at the saddle dome um
everything's kind of assigned the seats are six feet apart um so the media are kind of expected to
to social distance there's hand sanitizer everywhere there's like arrows on the right
way to walk to your seat the best way to get out everything's on zoom i think the flames have done
a really great job at not just following the protocols but making sure that the media that
do choose to be in the building feel comfortable and safe going to work and doing their jobs
And they've also been really great at making players, coaches, the general manager accessible despite, you know, how restrictive but necessary the access is. So I definitely have felt comfortable going into work every day. It's not something where I'm, you know, getting anxious walking into the Saddle Dome just because I think the Flames, like I said, have done a great job with the kind of protocols.
And of course, um, you know, even the PR staff, they're not near us because they're near the
players.
So anyone who is in contact with the athletes or the organization, uh, people who are going
on the road and being in contact with other teams are not allowed in contact with us.
So they have those guys in a bubble, non-bubble because the players obviously didn't want
to do the full bubble, but you know, they're completely separate from, from the media and
the kind of outside group.
i i remember kristen shilton tweeting out something when she got the the least reporting
job like i've gone back and i've watched every single leaf game from last year i'm like every
single leaf and i saw that's a nice face you just made every single leaf and this was the year they
finished last she went back and watched so uh i i saw the tweet that you got the calgary job like
a week or two ago when did you find out if i find out that you got the job because like that's
that's a lot to kind of take into it you're going from covering one team to a completely
different one on like a few weeks noticed yeah i i didn't have enough notice to certainly go
back and watch every single flames game from last season uh didn't have enough time for that
kind of breath um no I didn't watch every single game I will say I have always kind of been a fan
of the flames just because and you know obviously I covered Brady and I think the style of game that
Matthew and Brady play I think it's great for hockey so I have found myself watching the flames
in the past specifically when it comes to the western conference you know you finish work you're
done the eastern conference game you turn on you know the flames connects whatever it may be so I
did have experience obviously watching this team but it's different going from watching as just a
hockey fan to a critical eye um so I mean I didn't have a ton of time to do lots of prep um especially
because even when I did find out which was probably about three weeks before training camp was
expected to start um we didn't know if that would be pushed back um so we didn't know when the
announcement was going to happen and I also had you know this was a really big off season and a
really big season for the Ottawa Senators so I didn't want to just leave our Sens subscribers
and Sens fans high and dry like okay bye you know our my replacements coming but not until this date
so I was trying to get as much Sens stuff done as possible while also prepping for the Flames
while also trying to move across the country um while also in a pandemic so it was uh it's been a
time uh but I think it's been good um in terms of prep though like I I don't go back and watch
games but if there's like players and stuff that I'm interested in my colleague Scott Wheeler kind
of helped me out with this scouting service that he has and I'm able to kind of filter
different players or different line combinations different special teams different games and like
watch the shifts so it's a really fast-tracked way of scouting the team or the players so if you want
to do a story about Johnny Goudreau you don't have to watch every single Flames game to do that you
You can just kind of go in and watch every single shift that Johnny was on the ice or a specific game and watch specifically Johnny.
So that's been very helpful in terms of helping me learn a little bit more about the way that the players are on the ice rather than just looking at underlying metrics or, you know, goals assist plus minus and then kind of advanced analytics.
So watching shifts has been much, uh, it's, it's very helpful and way less time consuming
than watching full games for sure.
Um, so with the Calgary flames and we were just talking about them about an hour ago.
Um, so the, the Calgary flames are, I mean, this is the, this is a big season, right?
This is a big, let's go for it.
Season, uh, Tanev, Levo and Markstrom all coming over from Vancouver.
Uh, what are your initial thoughts on the flames?
What do you think their season hinges on?
like this success or failure hinges on what yeah that's a good question and I think there's so many
um things like that with the Flames like you mentioned it's a really big season for them and
I think there's still kind of the ultimate question of what is this Flames team are they a contender
and that's part of what really attracted me to the Calgary Flames in terms of a career
move um I think in terms of you know who's their x factor things kind of hinge on x player I
honestly think that it depends on what kind of camp you're in I think there's probably a lot
of people who are putting a ton of pressure on Jacob Markstrom to be the guy that helps them
get over the playoff hump for the first time in a long time um you know they haven't made it to
the second round or further in a really long time especially with this core group and a lot of
people have kind of said you know goaltending's never been an issue in Calgary but it hasn't been
like their marquee strength like they haven't had a true number one like Mika Kiprasov since
Mika Kiprasov so I think a lot of people have kind of put that on Jacob Markstrom and you
certainly see that in the six times six contract he signed like that's that's big boy money for
lack of a better word and you kind of expect a guy making that much money to be the guy that's
going to backstop you and help you have a deep playoff run but I also think that this team it's
kind of going to be not just one line or not just one player that things kind of hinge on i think
the flames this season they've broad true living made a ton of offseason moves to really bolster
the depth of this group and and jeff ward has spoken a lot about you know it's not just one
guy we're not doing line one two three four that's for the media and the fans to say look who's on
the first line for them they want to roll four lines they want to have three impactful defense
pairing so I think you're gonna see more of the guy being the guy who's rolling or the impactful
line is the one that's rolling so one night it could be like Matthew Kachuk was the x-factor
the other night it could be Rasmus Anderson Elias Lindholm Johnny Goudreau Sean Monahan so I think
this team has kind of changed their mindset from this is the core to you know we're gonna have to
rely on everybody to get us there i know it's not the sexy like this is matthew kachuk's year
but it really seems at least from the first you know couple weeks that i've been here that this
is a group that believes that they have the depth to have a different guy really gaining some
traction and rolling that they can rely on and then everyone else kind of you know supporting
them and and just really being able to roll a deep group to the playoffs you mentioned them
briefly there is Bradshaw Living's job on the line coming into this season because in the five
years that he's been GM of the Flames it's zero second round appearances two missed playoffs and
three first round exits so is there a little pressure on him personally going into the sixth
playoff run with this team I think that's a good question if memory serves me I think this is
either the last or the second last year on his deal I would say that this year I think
Tree Living did enough that the excuse and the onus shouldn't be on him I think if you look at
the moves that he made I think the message is more to the players like you guys say we need a
number one goalie I got you Markstrom you guys want more depth I got you Josh Levo, Dominic
Simone, Joaquin Nordstrom, I've got you, you know, another defenseman, you know, look at everything
that I've given you. Now you have to make use of it. I think that on paper, Bradtree Living has
probably done enough to help this group get to what they think they need. But at the end of the
day, the GM can only really do so much. And the players kind of have to take what they have and
run with it and i think they have the pieces they just you have to see them put it together
um but certainly if it goes this year next year with zero playoff success i mean i think right
now tree living is probably one of the longest tenured gms in the league just with the shuffle
that we've seen over the last couple of years um certainly having you know a seven or eight year
deal whatever it may be um with zero playoff success it's it's not going to be a great look
but I would probably say that it's not entirely on the general manager in
that aspect, but I'm still new here.
So maybe I'm entirely off on that.
I don't know.
Go ahead, Steve, go ahead.
Well, it's a lot harder without any fans in the building and obviously no
games have been played yet,
but you get a sense maybe just online that the flames are being gunned for a
little bit more this year.
um because i mean none of the teams in the canadian division like each other there's no
friendliness there but the battle of alberta is as red hot as it's been in years and if i'm the
canucks or a canucks fan i hate the flames right now like especially this year um because of all
the players uh that they stole basically markstrom uh at the forefront of that you got a thermometer
on that yeah i think if you just kind of go down the list um with the north division or the canadian
division and you look at like who has the most uh you know potential rivalries that are going to get
heated it's probably calgary and those are really recent and really fiery rivalries that add in
playing nine to ten times against each other this season it's going to get even more intense i mean
uh the winnipeg jets certainly don't like the flames after the play-in uh first round last
season or i guess the qualifying round if you want to get technical with it um you know i think
there was a lot of discourse uh around what happened with matthew kachuk and mark shifley i
know um uh matthew and mark i think spoke over the summer and i think the people on the team
maybe except for the coach don't blame matthew kachuk for that but certainly winnipeg jets fans
despise him and are going to want winnipeg to destroy matthew and the calgary flames this
season and they play 10 times so you can imagine how intense that playoff series got now think that
they're playing 10 times in a shortened season uh back to back at some points um the battle of
alberta needs no introduction that's going to get pretty intense um the senators aren't going to
like playing against them and we have you know our 10 bold predictions that we do at the company and
I think one of them that my colleague did spoiler alert was that maybe the brothers will fight this
year I think Chantel would be really angry about that but I think you're gonna see a lot of heat
between the Sens and the Flames like so you see like pre-existing rivalries and reasons for
that animosity between a lot of teams in the division and the Calgary Flames already
um i don't think the leafs or the habs are going to like them very much either again especially
not after playing each other nine times so the flames and matthew are not going to be
very uh liked or welcomed this season but i think they like that it's like a big miniature playoff
and it's it's funny for the first time in a long long time both edmonton and calgary's playoff
hopes hinge on how they do against each other and it's i mean you know based on how that goes like
even if they split it, it's going to be a, I mean,
it could be a make or break season, right?
And we may point to, let's say one doesn't make the playoffs.
We may point to one game against the Calgary Flames
or one game against the Edmonton Oilers
where that became not possible anymore.
So it's going to be very, very fascinating to watch.
And Haley, obviously, you know, you've got some, you know,
you've got some time in with the Sens before you made the switch.
quickly want to ask you about them and we're going to talk to ian mendez on thursday a little bit
more about his new gig with the athletic and all of that going on but from from you know having
left the senators behind which i'm sure that was very difficult because you get into these teams
what do you think they're going to be this year what do you think what kind of step forward are
they looking for and is matt murray the guy can he be the guy yeah i think the matt murray question
similar to the jacob marksman question is and i mean i would say that they're maybe on different
levels for sure but those are questions that I think remain to be seen there's only so much you
can gain from intra squads and practice in terms of evaluating what the goaltender is going to look
like with their new franchise um I think that the Sens truly believe that Matt Murray can be the guy
I think they believe that they can get him back to the level that he was at when he was you know
first coming into the league and he was this like really pleasant surprise
winning back to back Stanley cups before he kind of started having this slide,
if you will, for the last three seasons.
I think that there is like stylistic and mechanical things that the Sens will
need to work on with Matt Murray to get him back to that level.
He's always been really great at reading the game.
He's really smart hockey mind. He's obviously big as well.
you hear a lot from people about how um it's hard to find holes you know he just fills the net so a
lot of times it seems like guys are shooting and it's just hitting matt murray in the chest um or
or whatever it may be and a lot of that has to do with the way that he fills the net but also the
way that he reads the game to just get in the way of the puck um but i also think there are some
legitimate questions about his glove hand i don't think it's you know i think it kind of became a
bit of a meme and a joke online for a while but you know it's more of like a stylistic thing and
I spoke to my colleague Rob Rossi about this who covered Matt for a long time and he was saying
it's this thing where when Matt is really confident in his game he's moving he's reading the play he
looks like a number one goaltender but when he's maybe a bit shaken or he's not as confident he
has this tendency to drop his glove hand which obviously is not a great thing and then he also
plays out of position within the net which will impact his mobility and even though he'll read
the play he won't be able to get over in time so those are the kind of things that I think the
Sens will need to work on with Matt Murray to make him a number one goaltender again and a lot of
that comes down to confidence but I have the optimism and the faith that a guy like that can
get back to that level in terms of the rest of the Senators you know I think that there's a lot
of these storylines similar to last season about like they're going to surprise people and they're
not going to be fun to play against and all that can be true but that doesn't mean that it's enough
to get them out of the bottom of the division and I think just the strength of schedule is not going
to be their friend they don't have a single night off you never have a night off in the National
Hockey League but you don't get to play against the Detroit Red Wings the San Jose Sharks of last
season the teams that the Sens typically played well against and won those games and they did win
a few games against Calgary they won one game against Calgary they split the series they split
the series with Edmonton you know I think they took one game against Vancouver one game against
Montreal they didn't beat the Leafs and those games weren't easy for them and that's every
uh steve sorry the shrine always gets me too
what's wrong with my perfectly normal room for a grown man what's wrong it was just uh pretty
perfect but yeah they didn't beat the leafs um and so i just think that every and obviously
the winnipeg jets too so i think it's obviously not going to be an easy division for the ottawa
senators um and then you look at strength of schedule and dom loose chisholm did a story
about it too every other team in the division has an easier schedule because they get to play
the ottawa senators but the sens don't have the ease of playing against someone else because
they're always playing somebody who's technically on paper analytically better than them so while
i think brady kachuk is going to be just as annoying as matthew i think tim stutzla is an
incredible hockey player they're going to have some young guys in the roster they're going to
have some of these veterans getty dadnov that they brought in matt murray might be incredible but
again you're playing austin matthews carl mcdavid leon dreisaitl patrick liney every single night
carrie price um it's not going to be easy it's not gonna be easy for anybody but the sends it's
not the sends year to come into their division and shock people especially not under these
circumstances so i won't be like i'll i'll eat my words if i'm wrong but i wouldn't be shocked if
they're still in the bottom of that division right just tough stiff competition there's reality of
it and they're a team on the build yeah so okay yeah and and you know lastly here i mean obviously
you're not leaving ottawa completely behind let's talk about this new show with ian uh with the
athletic what do you guys get going on yeah so it was actually funny because my announcement came
first and then ian's came about a week later and obviously it was i felt i was sad because i saw
the reaction from sense fans who like no please don't leave us like we we like you and i felt
really bad but i knew that they'd be really happy that it was ian that was replacing me but
there was a really funny um discourse that started happening within the fan base of like
Ian get her on the radio and the flames are in town like keep keep doing your segments we love
when Haley's on the radio with you and Ian and I are just kind of texting back and forth like we
have a podcast coming instead obviously nobody knew that Ian was leaving TSN 1200 at the time
to come to the athletic to write to take my job and start this podcast with me so we kind of had
these little private chuckles about like we're not gonna be on the radio but we're gonna be
launching a podcast. Um, so it's really great. Ian and I already have, you know, preexisting
chemistry from working together on the radio often in Ottawa. He was always great. And, you know,
always had me on to promote my work, to promote me. That was new in the market. Even before I
moved to Ottawa, um, he called me to give me the lay of the land and he's like, I'll have you on
the show. I'll introduce you to the market. We'll have you on all the time. And he was just the most
incredibly supportive teammate even though he wasn't with my company he was just on the beat
and so I always was really appreciative of everything Ian did for me so to have the podcast
together is great because like I said we have that chemistry we have a great relationship
and it's really exciting for me to to have him as a colleague now not just you know a colleague in
terms of the beat so we've got lots on kind of planned we're really excited about different
segments that we can introduce. Um, we're excited to have that platform within the athletic to host
the show once a week. Um, and it's nice that it's a national podcast. We're not just doing
flames and sends. So, um, it's obviously going to be fun for us to kind of cast that net a little
bit wider, get into some different and deeper topics within the league, rather than just talking
about, you know, Matt Murray and, and, uh, getting Dadanov and guys on the flames, which don't get
me wrong that's awesome um but it's it's cool and it's different for me to start to get to do
things nationally as well um we're gonna try to have different guests on we'll do different
segments um we had a segment with dom loose chisholm uh and we called it dom dumb and dumber
because ian and i are obviously quite stupid in comparison to dom i think everybody is i think
everybody is jesse's gonna find out too i'm not sure if you heard it hayley but he said that all
those charts and graphs and uh what was it jesse it was the it was the player predictions of how
they're his models i just i want him to explain it to me like i'm fine you know his quote was
dumb and they're they don't they're not real uh and it'll be dom versus jesse next episode get
ready one thing you guys are doing that so quick one thing you guys are doing that's really cool
with the uh the athletic hockey show is on the same feed you're gonna get a bunch of different
hosts so like on mondays it's you and ian and on tuesdays it's uh scott burnside and pierre lebron
and then on thursdays it's uh ian and sean mackindoe so like when you subscribe to the feed
you're getting all these different hosts and you're getting new podcasts a couple times a
week so i thought that was really cool you guys doing that with the show yeah i think so too
especially for fans who you know want to hear different voices you know there have been fans
who've reached out to me and said like wow i'm following hayley now great episode that was super
funny wow dom's hilarious you know i used to hate his model because it hate like he hated my hockey
team but oh dom's actually really funny that's a human being i heard him on the podcast wow
so i think it's uh great that the athletic and our nhl vertical has done it in a way that we
can have different voices on um you know craig craig not custom sorry i don't know why i was
thinking of craig um burnside and custom burnside and lebron already had their two-man advantage
podcast um so people already know about the chemistry they have and the podcast they did
before but you know not everybody has heard me maybe not everyone's heard ian outside of the
ottawa market um a lot of people love sean slash down goes brown so there was like this fear that
puck soup was going to be gone at first we're like don't worry like he's still doing his puck
soup podcast but he's also gonna be here so it's cool I like that you know we all get to kind of
collaborate on it and we can kind of we'll have to it's actually I think uh Pierre and Scott were
hoping to get this like really big guest I won't name names but I heard who their producer was
lining up and I was like oh and Ian and I got Dom like okay they're just gonna blow us out of the
water there'll be some friendly no no it's like a way more fun than that but it'll be a bigger
guest so i think it'll um maybe have a bit of friendly competition between the three different
shows you know if somebody gets a big get we'll be like oh we're gonna have to come back and do
something else so i think it'll be fun love that well i won't tell you don't name names hailey one
last question about the nwhl we know that you're no longer following them as like in depth as you
were but just quickly the the tournament begins soon and obviously there's a there's a tv deal
there's the twitch deal there's tv deal america and canada uh where in your estimation does that
put the nwhl now is it more legitimate is it about the same have things changed since there's
been a head a leadership change what are your thoughts on where we're at with that
yeah and it's uh something that i hope to start getting right back into it's been
obviously difficult this last month just with the move and balancing the two different beats
everything that's been going on so that's something that I've kind of taken upon myself
is like I really need to be better at making time for the National Women's Hockey League the
PWHPA women's sports in general because that was always a focal point of my work and it'll
continue to be once I kind of get settled here in Calgary but you know it's I think with where
the nwhl stands i think that with the new leadership with the tv deal like you said for
for this um kind of bubble ish that's happening um for the season i think it adds some legitimacy
to the nwhl i think that there's people who are very excited about the product that they're about
to put out there but in terms again it seems like the same old story but i just don't think that
changes anything where the pwhpa players are concerned i don't think that what the nwhl has
done is going to be enough for players like hillary knight or mary philippa or kendall
cohen scofield to say hey you know what never mind let's just erase everything that we've been
saying for the last two years and go jump on board um i don't think it checks the boxes for
what they're looking for um so and that's fine you know i think people have been critical of
both sides but I've kind of gotten to the point personally where I feel like we're getting to this
environment in the women's game where it doesn't matter what either side does you know everyone's
kind of comparing them and arguing about it and I think that it kind of does a disservice to the
women's game to continue to put them against each other um I saw I think that we should just
regardless of your personal opinions it's women's hockey and there's gonna be women's hockey on tv
for the nwhl and that's amazing the pwhpa one of their groups is playing against a high school boys
team and those are being streamed online and that's also amazing because those women are
getting a chance to play um it's you know i just think that we should start to just support the
game in a different way um i just think it gets a little bit exhausting when everyone's just yelling
and fighting over it all the time and obviously that's an environment that's been created because
the two sides don't agree um but i think as you know fans or analysts of the women's game we can
maybe just support the women's game and just see where it goes that's kind of where i'm at i don't
know you're talking about something for that well see you're talking about something that's real
there because uh like i saw the sweatshirts and i want one but i keep thinking i'm like am i gonna
like am i gonna make some people upset if i get this you are you are you are and that's
isn't that ridiculous because it's unfortunate because i i think that you should be allowed to
personally support either side or both i personally as a member of the media i cover both
sides of you know the divide in the women's game i'll cover the nwhl i will celebrate the nwhl i
will cover the pwhpa and i'll celebrate what they're doing um and you know i just think that
it's supporting and growing the women's game um that i've had conversations with people within
the national women's hockey league who say you know i hope that their tour works i hope that
people go and watch the dream gap tour i hope that people go and watch these players who've
chosen not to play here because it's good for women's hockey um and it's the same way you know
if the nwhl falters if the pwhpa falters it's you have to look at it from the women's game as a
whole like both of them are important for for women's hockey in a in a more grand picture um
so i just hope that we can have a bit more positivity and just support for the game because
i think you know these players regardless of where they've decided to play are important and
they deserve a platform and we don't always have to be so angry is it is it fair to say though
hayley it's not our fight like like it's it's our fight is our fight is to support women's hockey
and the fight for women's hockey to survive you know the fight between the nwhl and pwhpa isn't
our fight that's and i don't even know if it's a fight it's just two different ways of yeah it's
a disagreement it's a it's a variance in in opinion but i don't i don't think it's like
them versus each other and and or maybe it is but less so now I think I think you touched on a
really good point let's support both and you know it's up to them where they want to take it yeah
I think it's you know the players have decided like what they want to support and what they
believe is best for the long-term future and sustainability of the women's game um but that
doesn't mean we can't just support the women's game as a whole fair enough Kelly Salvian the
athletic calgary now it's so nice to see you again and thanks so much for making time and you can bet
we're going to be bugging you every time battle of alberta happens so uh thanks so much hayley
and this will not be the last time we hear from you this season yeah i can't wait to i don't know
see if steve changes his shrine or you know add some calgary flame stuff in there they can change
it right now i can there you go i can turn it around okay it's a little rearranging i'm so
embarrassed i'm so embarrassed excuse the mess
i got stuff on the floor oh my god oh my god and it's his own book imagine that
oh my best-selling book this team is ruining my life but i love them
that's available in adam we don't have time to tell people it's available in stores
we're saying goodbye to him how do i turn this off thank you thank you hayley appreciate your
time so in a couple now deleted tweets eugene melnick uh said he submitted a proposal uh to
have 6 000 people uh in uh in canada basically for the games for the ottawa senator schemes now
uh to put this into context for you if you don't live in ontario we just re-entered
extra lockdown uh like an hour and a half after he tweeted it yeah so like and we knew this was
coming by the way we knew this this second lockdown was coming and because it was even
more like a week yeah outdoor gatherings are limited to five people to put in perspective
right 100 and uh uh you know school kids aren't going back to school till like february february
and in the major populous regions and all that stuff so we don't need to get into the details
of that if you care enough and you live outside of ontario it's available on twitter for you
beyond that though the timing of this could not be worse could not be worse and and you know when
you think about that, you know, we've got, we're up around 3000 cases a day. We're talking about
anywhere between, and it depends on the daily, uh, daily counts between 50 and a hundred deaths
a day. We've had over 5,000, um, which is more than many developed nations have had, uh, like
including, you know, places like Japan. Um, so we have a, we have a serious problem with COVID here
and, uh, to put that out today is ill-timed and stupid, not something we haven't seen from
eugene melnick before the tweets have been deleted but steve you say there's an update
yeah so just tweeted a few minutes ago from eugene's twitter account that's a just a great
idea to have uh he said clarification while the senator and bear with me it's four tweets
clarification while the senator's organization remains optimistic that we will have an
opportunity to eventually welcome fans back to canadian tire center now is not the time
as an organ which is very different no as an organization we will do our part to combat the
spread of covet 19 and adhere to the ontario government's new measures for the first time
in my tenure as owner of the sins my family and i will not be attending opening night this friday
instead i will be joining everyone else who will be excuse me who will be watching and cheering
um the game from home we are in this fight together stay home stay safe and go sends go
read my full statement below so he put a full statement on eugene melnick.com another great
idea um so uh that is there so when i when i saw that he uh deleted those tweets i had a theory
and now that he's released the statement i i uh would like to announce my theory that guy got a
very large phone call today and uh the three names that come to mind are it could have been bill
daly from the nhl it could have been gary betman from the nhl or it could have been straight up
premier of ontario doug ford saying eugene bro what the hell yeah like you're on twitter read
a tweet like how do you announce that Tuesday morning when it's been advertised in the province
since at least last Thursday that there was an announcement coming Tuesday morning and beyond
that there isn't you know we're a little different up here in Canada I know there's been big pushes
to open things back up in the states despite the cases and whatever difference of culture
there isn't a big push here to do that you know they want to push to open small businesses
even for curbside uh but there's not a big pusher to be like let's get back into a closed stadium
i just have professional hockey teams are they're so far down the list of yeah right
no one's been asking for this no one no one wants that so this tweet is my sister cannot go to her
day program like and we're and we're talking about the sense and thousands of people in that
building you know what i mean sorry that's the thing it's important to me i always get hung up
on no 100 i get it man it's but the tweet is pure vanity no one gives a shit about who's who's at
the sends game or not no one cares and uh no one no one expects that the sends are going to allow
people this year and eugene's out here tweeting this for eugene because it matters to him because
he would like to break even uh he knows he's going to lose money this year he said he needs
6 000 people to break even um i mean they were losing money before i'm not really sure why 6 000
people i mean would probably lose less money but at the end of the day i i wonder how many people
would even show up for that especially for a town that doesn't particularly like him
during in this situation who's saying i'm gonna get up from my bed and go to
canadian tire center in kanata like why and this is this is the thing though because people were
like oh wouldn't it be funny if it was 6 000 people and it was mostly leaf fans and i'm like
the the restrictions have been so regional for so long before they made it to province wide like
you wouldn't be able to just drive from toronto to go to a game in ottawa would you no you wouldn't
you drive to a region drive from the most infected region in the country to
someone somewhere that's four or five hours away that's wild yeah that's why it's just it's so
listen i don't blame him for wanting this i don't even blame him for thinking it could be realistic
at some point in the next few months but today today and this is this is what we this is what
i've been saying he doesn't listen to anybody anybody getting advice from any human being
in the province of ontario would know that's a terrible idea to tweet that out today of all days
everyone in this province has known that the premier was going to get the premier was getting
criticism uh for using i think they called it game show tactics because it was basically for
almost a week now he's been going to tuesday just wait for tuesday i got some great information
free tuesday some big information some big news coming tuesday tuesday tuesday tuesday
like an hour and a half like i said before the press conference this dude goes we want
thousands of people to come to senator's games use your head use it how like you don't have
an assistant you don't have anybody in your life who listen who you would listen to who might say
this is a bad idea come on i just don't think he listens oh like so you wonder what shot the
sentence have when he's screwing up things that are so elementary that's ridiculous
someone helped this guy unbelievable also in the original tweet it's is so i'll read the original
we should probably read that it's eugene tweeted i've submitted a robust public safety plan that
will allow 6 000 fans in the canadian tire center that includes health protocols ranging from
proper physical distancing rapid testing and mask wearing at all times inside the arena so even
within that tweet the amount of paperwork and logistics and and work that went into all of
those things that he outlined there at what point did no one say hey let's this isn't the time for
this like i get we want the fans in the arena but why are we working on this thing that's not going
be realistic for this season and then somebody went ahead and submitted this to the province
while they're in the middle of limiting everybody to their own house they're like hey why don't we
invite here's a proposal on inviting people to canadian tire arena even though you're going
through with a plan to tell everybody to stay inside of their room like it's at no point it
would have been a terrible idea it would have been bad to announce it yesterday but it still
would have been so much better than right before the premier very publicly says we're gonna have
a stay-at-home order like it just the he's not paying attention no of course not but when is he
ever are we surprised oh and it's like it's it's like what like honestly on the list of crazy shit
that's already happened in 2021 i'm like and i'm supposed to trust your judgment with health
protocol when i can't even trust you with your judgment on this i i think i can't imagine the
amount of hours that pierre dorian and his staff have to waste speaking to pierre i'm sorry speaking
to eugene every week because you gotta like this thing is gms and presidents and stuff have to talk
to the owner every week and you imagine it's something brian burke talks about yeah like
can you imagine just the amount of like pierre dorian um you know inevitably one day will not
work for the ottawa senators uh he could be the best general manager in the league and we might
not know it yet he is fighting with one arm behind his back and he's doing a pretty damn good job
with that team uh he might retire to an island and we'll never hear from him maybe but i don't
think they paid him enough to retire like i don't think they pay him enough money so i mean i gotta
say they're doing a darn good job up there with with that team and and i just can't imagine what
those calls must be like i have had some insights into what other owners are like and these are
owners that you you don't even know these people's names and you're and everybody goes they're
horrible they're awful and all they do is is tell us that we need to trade people it's crazy and so
i can't imagine what it would be like with eugene but you know what bad timing bro uh it seems that's
eugene's thing man that's what he does he does bad timing it's something like i'm surprised he
didn't tweet something out uh during the capital riots last year last week it's just that's just
what he does he's a magnet for shitty timing like i'm just i'm i'm wondering because that's just
eugene melnick is a significant enough personality and that's a significant enough
uh announcement to to make public i wonder if before the press conference today doug ford heard
it i think he might have something tells me i doubt it i doubt it i don't think it's because
i'm just i'm just imagining the look on his oh like today's already a bad day for him like he's
not having a good day i don't i don't know when the last time he did have a good day was but we
already know he's having a bad day and i'm just imagining him you know like an aide walks up to
him and he's just like again if you wake up a billionaire isn't every day a good day
well he's not a billionaire you just oh you oh yeah oh dorian you mean okay fair enough yeah
no no i'm talking about no never mind okay let me ask you this let me ask you this let me ask you
remember the uh ontario government minister that got drunk and called him a loser at a concert
lisa mcleod who is now the minister of sports she was right eh
like she was right
like it was maybe it was improper but like is she where is the lie adam that you talk about
the embodiment of terrible the worst person you know makes a great point right she was the one
that's like there's no body checking in the ohl right you know like she's she's maybe not had some
winning moments herself but i on that one i i have to agree it was a pretty you want to talk about
someone who makes doug ford's life difficult oh my gosh absolutely lisa mcleod now there's lots
going on in the nhl getting into the season obviously we're super excited but one thing
that did break and we was sort of surprising uh last night was uh the financial situation that
Evander Kane apparently now finds himself in. He's being sued by a bank for nonpayment of a loan.
And they'd actually, what's interesting is you get to dive deeper into this story. He's got about
10 million in assets. He owes about 26 million, which is more than half of what the San Jose
Sharks are due to pay him over seven years. Now what can happen here? And a lot of people
don't understand or know this because when are we ever in, when do we ever have the opportunity
to sign a 50 million dollar contract right you know when does that happen and it's it's it's
okay i'm really good at red dead but but there's a very very small chance that anyone has a chance
to do that but what you can do when you sign a guaranteed contract like that as an athlete
is go to a bank and say i want to borrow against the contract the money that i will make so i can
have a lot more of that money up front and what a lot of players will do if we're talking about
big money is they'll take that and they'll put it in an investment portfolio. It's a bit of a risk,
but obviously if you've got the assets to back it, just like anything else, it's like taking
out a home equity line of credit. You are able to take that money. And the goal is to make more
money upfront. That's why players like John Tavares and Mitch Marner and Austin Matthews
all wanted to get their money upfront because the more money you have at once, the better it is
long-term because the earlier you get it, the earlier you can invest it, the more compound
interest etc etc etc and better to have money it's better to have money it's better to have
you're gonna make a lot of money better to have it all up front too so with all of that in mind
um we have uh our good friend uh evander kane doing something similar to that now we have
there have been issues in the past and jesse i know we were talking about this a little bit
this morning um he did have some gambling debts at a at a casino which he was sued for his five
hundred thousand dollars right yeah yes that's correct and then that's correct more money than
i've ever lost but it's not 26 millions not 26 million dollars so this is a big issue and i don't
know if one pertains to the other um but what you can do i know in in if you declare bankruptcy like
he might do and he may not play this year um is reorganize your assets hang on to them and
somehow squirrel your way out of the loan. You'll have no credit, but the, um, I, and again,
I've never been through bankruptcy, so this is tougher for me to kind of get my head around and
try to do a little research on it. But essentially what can happen is you could continue to collect
the money that you're going to make. You'll pay some of your crediting back, but, uh, the rest of
it is, you know, you're able to hang on to some of what you already have. So that could be what's
going on here regardless uh i i just hope it's nothing like every time i see 30 for 30 and it's
like you know i blew through my money that's what i thought of here and it just breaks your heart
so i hope that's not the case you've mentioned a couple times uh that he might not play where
where did you read this and why how would that help him well so my understanding would be um
uh so the reporters that have done the story the last day to opt out i think was like the 23rd or
the 24th of december so that's odd to me as well he had been practicing with the sharks
and if you go deeper into the story the sharks had actually been paying the bank directly
up until uh which you can have your you know if you're a contract you can have them pay the bank
directly if you want to but then they stopped doing that in 2019 for some reason and that's
why the banks come after them it's complicated i really don't know steve but i would imagine it
has something to do with your income levels that you you know you can't work this season because
it's that's the lawyer's question and i just don't know i don't know it says well because
he makes seven mil a year sorry in the article that the athletic wrote on the uh on the story
it says that um his lawyer outlined in the uh bankruptcy filing that he can still opt out of
the season uh because of health concerns given the recent birth of his child so the opt-out date
was december 24th but um and then his bankruptcy petition is dated january 9th but his lawyer's
still arguing that um he could still opt out and when reached for a comment the lawyer didn't
clarify on how he would make that happen but he says that he could still do it so would they still
pay him no so he would forfeit his salary for this year that's that's what's really confusing
me like i don't understand how you owe i think it's actually closer to 27 million
and you make 7 million how does for how does foregoing the season and your salary help you
in that situation i think i think it has to do with you in bankruptcy i again i don't know and
it would change from state to state but i believe it's like you can't you have to prove you can't
pay it back so if he sits out the season then he can't pay it back and then it's sort of like what
are the creditors really going after and yeah i don't i don't understand it and i'm sure we'll
have a billion lawyers reach out to us and please do i would love to get your breakdown on it but
that's you know and remember this stuff's ongoing too they may be trying to reach a settlement
outside of the courtroom as well oh boy yeah ugly ugly listen a lot of people don't like
van der kane um i i can't help but have sympathy for someone who had it so good and ruined it so
so badly that's well you gotta hope that i believe he's got a young daughter does he not
he has a child yes he's a child so you gotta hope for the kid that at least there's some money aside
for education and hopefully a little bit of an easier lift and or start at life anyway i mean
worked his whole life and made millions of dollars and hopefully he hasn't burned through it all so
we'll leave it there because we just don't know anymore frankly yeah i mean at the end of the day
he's still a vander kane you know he's still a professional athlete uh there there are ways to
make lots of money um but uh oh boy that's a lot of dough absolutely so i think that wraps us for
today we'll bring the press conference back after uh the leafs game uh we do have some future guests
steve who do you want to talk about what we got we got don decision coming up is that next show
