Starting point is 00:02:46 for any manscape product check it out S-D-P-P The Steve Dangle Podcast with your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wilde, and Jesse Blake. Let's go! Steve's favorite thing happened right before the show, and Jesse's
Starting point is 00:03:07 favorite thing too. Jesse loves this when we say breaking news on a recorded podcast that comes out a few hours later. I love it. We'll talk about that in a second, but first I want to just mention, get real movement we're coming to end down to the end of pride month and uh we're looking to raise money now also we went out and we shot a video i can't wait for this thing to come out it actually looks
Starting point is 00:03:28 like it's gonna be fun we we rented arena space jesse got us to the don montgomery the dom gum uh the old dom gum which is an arena that was built in the 60s uh like most arenas in toronto has not been upgraded since the 60s and you think i'm joking i'm not being facetious that's actually true most of them were built for expo 67 have not changed since uh and uh the dom gom is one of them i used to play hockey there all the time and it is a uh it's it's a classic two pad arena with the racing stripes all over and we did a whole bunch of challenges for the get real movement we're hoping that our entertainment value gives you uh a little bit of a a push to donate to the get real move you're gonna be like steve is so gosh darn athletic yeah oh i think that they're already
Starting point is 00:04:14 saying that look at these guns that you have in your cool cookie jersey here simply it's a mcflurry jersey it says it on the thing there you go i was a champion in this jersey you were first and only time i wanted i wanted to play you guys a preview here oh here we go okay jesse's bringing it i think this is a good little preview of what you can expect on friday when this drops oh oh maddie give it a give it a quick second is it is it kicking in over there there you go give it a second there it is look at that squat so describe a friend we're listening so uh we this is this is a preview of the sam bennett oops challenge where we accidentally smack people on the show with pool noodles as many times as we can total uh now obviously that part of the
Starting point is 00:05:01 get real 5k movement is that you go for a virtual 5k uh and 34 laps around the arena is five kilometers we figured out so what we thought is why not do a whole bunch of challenges where we get to jesse we get to absolutely whooping um so every time steve and jesse hit me with this pool noodle they get a lap off their time and jesse just smacked the shit out of me man jesse did not want to skate at all no no i thought that was the point yeah see here's the thing is like you could have tapped but jesse got his anger out yeah i thought that was the point it wasn't the point not to hit you no it's oops i accidentally wrecked your playoffs the sam bennett challenge i might have done i can't believe this happened and it was me again i might have done better had
Starting point is 00:05:44 i not spent the entire time screaming my absolute lungs out yes i was horse you apologized the i'm so sorry i'm sorry it's an accident you're my friend there's i texted you there's some really really great stuff uh on there actually that was one of the more fun shoots i think we've ever done It was a great time So we're going to have that for you Get your donations in If you want to see the video, you've got to donate Oh, is that what it is?
Starting point is 00:06:11 We don't release the video unless we hit 4k Yeah Alright Donate or the video gets it Now The video Oh man The video's going to get it
Starting point is 00:06:26 Donate or the content gets it i don't know i don't please go to right to the recycling bin yeah it's a good cause please just help uh evander kane broke his own trade to the vancouver connects by the way the trade call as of this time is still pending so we don't know what's going back we think it's a fourth rounder and no salary retained even the releases of vander kane like the release of this yes it he jumped the gun the trade hasn't even been well done it's not official but it will be at the time of this recording so vancouver fans are not reacting well to this but we'll go we'll start here he says as my time with the edmonton oilers have come to a close i want to take a moment to sincerely thank
Starting point is 00:07:07 the entire organization my teammates incredible community of edmonton blah blah blah blah i'm gonna get to the end uh with that said i'm incredibly excited for the next chapter of my career as i join the canucks it's an honor to become a part of an organization and team i grew up watching as a kid vancouver is a city that lives and breathes hockey and i'm looking forward to the opportunity to play in front of my hometown as i did many years ago as a vancouver giant now um uh some people are curious about this for a couple of reasons right first off the oilers are in cap hell and they needed to they need to figure that out and we'll talk about victor arvidsson some of these other things well anytime you can objectively help a divisional rival you
Starting point is 00:07:42 got to do it right there is also and you cannot deny this what indisputable proof that this is a guy who is has a time limit on a dressing room dude there's always something there's absolutely always something and even the surgery stuff it was weird it was weird that is some like i don't think they're going after the oilers for that i think they're going after evander for that like i don't think the oilers were thrilled about his timing for surgery either that's that was what was floating around out there now i will say uh as i wave my iced coffee around uh that uh italian This guy adds a ton of, like, piss and vinegar to any lineup when he's on his game. He didn't have a very good Stanley Cup final, but he was very good before that.
Starting point is 00:08:29 I thought it was funny Stan Bowman gave his goaltending the exact description I would have given Evander Kane, actually. I was like, oh, no, he was great until the final. I want to say that I think it's interesting that the Vancouver Canucks, who have had dressing room issues, their public are uniting with Evander Kane who has had I don't know if well he has had dressing room issues we know very publicly in Winnipeg he did yes um I don't know that it was the next I don't think that's necessarily what it was in in uh there's too much in Edmonton but there was in San Jose and there was in Winnipeg and and so this will be very interesting because he is a very intense person he is a very good power forward he must be a really good player you know what I mean
Starting point is 00:09:13 someone less talented would have been booted from the league years ago he's he's very good yes and he's a unicorn because he's big he's tough he scores that is and fourth overall pick you can ride that for like 15 years only a few guys really that's true only a few guys really can say that they could do that like your tom wilson's and stuff like that and i'm not putting them on the same level but you know what i'm talking about i want to talk i want to start with the good for the Canucks okay okay because instantly I'm looking at Canucks media right now uh and people aren't thrilled for a couple of reasons number one that's a fragile dressing room number two um they didn't they gave up a fourth which is pretty good for a power forward like Evander
Starting point is 00:09:54 Kane but he didn't play all last year I mean they give him nothing and but there's no salary retained and the Canucks now have seven million dollars left to spend so we're gonna hold on that yes you got petterson you got heidel i think pew suitor is leaving i guess uh i don't know for sure but it sure seems that way if pew suitor is going to get five million on the open market that's what they're speculating which i love pew suitor but i think that's a little much i i think it would have been better spent on him you think so so but let's talk about what evander came brings this line let's bring up i don't know should we bring up like uh the puckpedia uh lineups and and just have a look at here's what he brings let's let's start with the good okay well he brings
Starting point is 00:10:36 great practice for your penalty kill stop i'm asking you to be i'm asking you to look at the good here okay he's going to be a good net front presence um especially on the power play he can bang he can crash um i assume he's going to be better than what we saw in the playoffs yeah no matter how much you train you're still recovering from several major surgeries um and you haven't played hockey right and then you're stepping right into playoff hockey that's actually pretty admirable what he did um and i think he has really underrated skill um you know he's he's one of those guys ironically like the florida panthers is a team where you you just pay attention to the rough stuff and the drama and kind of ignore the fact that he's a really good hockey player um there is
Starting point is 00:11:23 a shelf life on his time with teams i i don't know what his longest time with a single team is it might be the jets uh just because it goes back to his time with atlanta um which is crazy he's a thrasher it that is i didn't even think about that that guy is an atlanta thrasher that guy played with the baby blue thrashers and just rocked matt cook yep rocked him real hard nobody hated that nope no one on earth hated that and then he grew up into a player that people hate about as much um the Canucks get better they traded nothing off their team and they got a player who could potentially be very good for them in the regular season it's a little difficult to evaluate because he hasn't played a regular season in a while right I don't know could he be half a
Starting point is 00:12:12 point a game player could he be a 20 goal guy a 25 goal guy still um how many games is he going to get into and now you're starting to ask all these questions and to me the number one question with the Canucks is would this money have been better spent somewhere else right and then the answer I come up with is yeah yes yeah well I look at the way that they've spent their money on defense uh Hughes at 785 which is a crazy deal Myers at three million which he's in the second year of that deal Marcus Pedersen I think that was a great pickup maybe just not the right time for the Canucks and Philip Roenick, who's got in the second year of an eight year deal at seven point two five.
Starting point is 00:12:52 And then you've got the other the other Pedersen and Mancini. But you've got Kevin Lincoln and now locked up. People forget he extended four and a half million for the next five years. That's a really good foundation. Demko, who's still only twenty nine. Yes. And if he's not injured, there's a tradable asset. If you're looking for like if Thatcher Demko is 80 percent of Thatcher Demko, what he was
Starting point is 00:13:15 five million for him is fair. and i just don't know if he can play just keep him in lincoln and how much is lincoln making uh four and a half oh you can't keep both yeah especially with archers feel offs just backstopping abbotsford all the way to the finals he was so good so all right that guy's ready we're talking ourselves into this being a manageable situation right this is this is a really manageable situation you're strong on d i really like their top four mancini's got some growing to do i think he's going to do it um d petterson is uh he was pretty impressive as a rookie we know lincoln and can stop pucks we know silavs can as well calder cup champion if you can move on from
Starting point is 00:13:55 demco that frees up some of the space that you're going to need up the middle and that's the problem you're gonna need it up the middle you said d petterson like there isn't two of them uh the petterson who plays d there's two of them they have three petterson oh son of a bitch damn it okay the other the one who's a rookie is the one you're referring to is also alias i know canucks fans help me help me what do you call them all ep25 oh ep40 and ep25 ep25 and the new one is ep29 yeah no he's not no he's marcus petterson oh for fuck mp you can just call of margus petterson yeah i hate this i god this is exhausting okay ep25 had a very good season last year i liked him better when there were only two of them now there's three no no it's a really
Starting point is 00:14:51 good decor it's a good situation in net even if you trade one of those guys like all those things are good up front's hurting and that's why you go and and you get nevander kane my problem is gonna be uh if this is all they do up front because like dude look at the middle that's that's not good and like he'll you just can't your your whole second line might miss half the season but between evander chain philip heatle even jake debruska has been injured a few times like man that's you need guys who play hockey games for god's sake there's gonna be 82 next season that's gonna be tough i'm not a huge fan of this deal i look at this roster that's currently constructed and i say that's a good six through ten team in the western conference yep like i'm
Starting point is 00:15:41 confused as what the goal is for the vancouver canucks and jim rutherford are you trying to win a stanley cup because you're not building a roster here currently constructed that's gonna do that vander kane's not the thing getting you over the hump so there better be more moves coming to bolster this lineup i like i think jesse nailed it very likely you get a better season out of ep40 you get career years at everybody it's still not great no i mean it's i think the ceiling is a 5c like i'm thinking 5 through 10 in the west like in between that sherwood he should not be on your i mean right now he's penciled in as a third line that's not where he should be at 1.5 and i think no no i think it's not it's not what he makes it's how
Starting point is 00:16:23 he plays he's a fourth line guy and i love keifer sherwood but i'm just saying it's i think what they're hoping for after this calder cup is like some of these guys step into bigger roles like the first name i look at is lecker mackie um it's devco's getting traded see loves yeah when he goes by the way just so you guys know when she loves shows up to camp in september if he gets sent down he's got to pass through waivers now which they're just so that's not gonna happen so devco is getting traded yeah that's why you give lincoln in that contract i guess yeah well he was great and he was great in nashville too or demko i get no one would be shocked he held out and held out and held out and held out
Starting point is 00:17:03 and then right before camp he signed with the canucks and then they had injuries and it was all him it's pretty rare that it works out that way but i in a vacuum well no actually in a vacuum it's a good move um looking at the broader picture it's a terrible move if the canucks find a way to move off of demko they can make this make sense um you know it's a little bit like uh you know what's what's been popping up recently is the summer of brad yeah there were a couple days there where brad for
Starting point is 00:17:35 living with the calgary flames were like what an idiot like this is a disaster yep and then he found a way to redeem it in like the next 48 hours now and then how did history well history hasn't exactly smiled on it yeah but we're all like oh my god they're gonna be basement dwellers and then you know anyway without knowing what comes next next year's canucks look terrible but and i i don't there's lots of next it's terrible like i don't think i i have them down there with the blackhawks you know terrible in that they're middling and i don't think they want to be middling they should be i think another middling season just raises more question marks about the future of quinn hughes who's going to need an extension at the end of the season so
Starting point is 00:18:18 you're playing all through next season and say you squeak in the playoffs you lose in the first round or something like that like that's not that's not doing anything for your franchise you get those playoff dates and i'm sure they're going to be back they're going to be happy getting the money you know but like it's not moving anything forward i think they're in a position where they don't want to rebuild they don't want to tear it down so if you're not rebuilding then your next goal is to win the stanley cup because you don't want to be middling so i don't think this cane deal gets them over that hump unless there's other things coming down uh yes now in terms of like not in terms of actual transactions it'll be difficult for ep40 to have a worse season
Starting point is 00:18:56 yes it'll be i easy for quinn hughes i think to have a better season on account of he'll be healthier he'll be healthy um same goes for dakota joshua that's a really underrated one uh philip ronick missed a lot of time you get a full season of marcus petterson now there's a lot of things to be encouraged about with the canucks but again um as as we sit here uh 72 hours before the draft um which means there's a lot of off season to go i look at their roster and i'm confused which means there's more coming like the good news is most gms aren't completely stupid right um they probably see the same holes that we do so i think the canucks are gonna be a fascinating team to watch over the next week
Starting point is 00:19:45 yeah and this on the surface like basic level it's your brock besser replacement like you're you're losing besser to free agency and you're bringing in evander kane that's that's the one for one swap if you're talking about last season's team to to next year's on what the lineup is that's what you're replacing and is that like how i don't think that's the end all yeah no you can't be like we solved it place kane with besser we're good now like that's not what the canucks should be i wonder i wonder if we revisit the connor garland trade stuff well i think they what i heard yesterday was that they were trying to extend them and i love connor garland i think he's awesome uh but i know i'm just looking at no and moving off of him doesn't really make sense
Starting point is 00:20:26 i'm just looking at pieces you can here's what it looks like guys we're doing this on the fly If Demko, yeah, exactly. This just happened. If Demko gets moved, which I think he will, how much, considering the injury last year, and I just checked in with somebody and they said he should be, the thinking is he should be good to go next season.
Starting point is 00:20:43 He's got a year left on his deal. He has had that weird injury. Maybe that weird injury was just weird and it takes forever to heal. Maybe it's not one of those lingering weird injuries. But I just... Or he can just manage it. I'm wondering, you know,
Starting point is 00:20:57 there's a lot of teams looking for goaltending help. What can the Canucks expect back in a trade for him? Assuming it's like a one for one, like an Evander Kane. I don't think goalie value is terrible. No, I don't think it is. I think you're wrong on that. Well, but it, but his injury brings the goalie value, I think, down. Well, it's, it's interesting though.
Starting point is 00:21:18 The price that he's getting paid, like, are you paying Demko to be like a, I think if you pay him to be a one B. and i think five million is a little high but that's what the bruins are paying it's a little high but ironically a team that i think fits the bill there is the oilers like that'd be a great spot for him yeah um but then i'm like okay seattle needs a backup no joey decord's already making five and then you have a 10 million dollar okay uh the ducks said no well that doesn't make any sense they're not okay so i'm now trying to figure out where that could make sense columbus is an interesting one they're trying to move mers leakens again but i don't they already have it
Starting point is 00:21:59 yeah an expensive goalie they're trying to move off of so like yeah teams need goaltending but that's a very particular situation and i'm off the top of my head i'm struggling to find a good fit there yeah me too uh i don't know i don't know like listen thatcher demko at his best that's a great goal to sure i mean what if you had uh i'm trying to who do the sharks have in net i know i know they have georgia have um they got um sharks might make sense sure well because then you could have like askarov demko askarov askarov was injured a lot of last year do they want to have him in the ahl some of this year to get some of that time and then he missed last year do you want a two million dollar goaltender in the second year of his deal back in the ahl after
Starting point is 00:22:46 him being in the AHL was the reason he was forced forced his way out of I think you play him in the NHL but you insulate him with Demko yeah right so I don't think Georgiev is your insulation that's not it but then where does he go and there's a lot to figure out yeah interesting uh another oiler that's definitely on his way out is Victor Arvidsson and it's not because both sides don't like each other it's just not a fit uh Victor Arvidsson was a at his best a spectacular two-way forward who could give you great middle six scoring last year though uh not a great fit with the Oilers 27 points in 67 games this guy has had injuries but the Oilers signed him to a contract that was kind of expensive and and so he's making four million dollars I really don't
Starting point is 00:23:32 hate that player but that's too much at this stage in his career it's too much he's only 32 but again injuries yeah I wonder where a guy like that sort of ends up too for the Oilers because if we talk about the cane situation for vancouver dropping cane gives the oilers more financial flexibility ostensibly probably to make a trade for a goaltender uh victor arvidsson i would think like they're they're not retaining on him are they they're just giving him away to a taking team are they not well teams have been we've over the last 12 months looked at a crazy amount of players and gone well they're gonna have to retain and and they have teams have dumped them for nothing the rangers did it twice it's kind of
Starting point is 00:24:16 crazy um i mean three times if you come gujo you know there you go so now now i'm trying to think of fits there um that for some reason my mind is immediately going sharks because why not um like it's it's funny i feel like these players have like no value but with the draft 72 hours away you know i i think teams are probably putting more value on a fourth round pick than they would otherwise yeah oh oh we get i don't know we get a chance to pick a player like 135th overall that's pretty exciting right well and you look at the sharks and there is two guys that make over at least it forward two guys that make over five million i mean someone's got to play for god's sake yeah yeah uh they traded away a lot of guys through last season yeah that could make it they
Starting point is 00:25:09 got 41 million in cap space it like why the hell not if you're this if you're mike greer though and he's he's been really good about getting value and and you're making the oilers pay for that sure but like is the price really outrageous it's not a second is it a third well what's it worth to you well evander kane just went for a fourth yeah but that's a that's a different that's a different team it's a better player more expensive they wanted them i think the sharks could be a fit jesse what do you think with arvidson arvidson i think is a little more nuanced because he controls where he goes he does have the little anchor next to his name he can't be sent down he can't be waived he has a no he has a full no move hey stanley stanley did stan
Starting point is 00:25:56 sign that there was that jeff jackson victor arvidsson makes four million dollars for one more season no movement no movement clause associated with that so i don't think it's as easy as picking uh a destination for him because victor arvidsson's got to agree to go there now they did say they did say that he's ready to move on it's just a question of whether he wants yeah it's he gets to control where he goes i guess i mean listen uh not not to feed you shark's truth or propaganda but why not why the hell not go to san jose like listen here is by the way that's a jeff jackson signing because it was july 1st oh there you go so here is exactly what happens if you get traded to san jose uh you go there you play probably middle six
Starting point is 00:26:41 you might even get power play time as victor arvidsson you hang out with uh you know a happy go lucky bunch of kids and one of two things happens they surprise everyone and they're really good and maybe you decide you stay or the more likely thing it's another year in the rebuild they miss the playoffs they're well out of the playoff picture come uh uh trade deadline time and they trade you somewhere else maybe even back to Edmonton like I I don't know I think that's a great solution Edmonton's I think done a really good job with the Evander Cade move because they're now up to 17 million dollars in cap space which is quite a bit for a team that's just at the Stanley Cup you know it's like right there usually don't come away with that much cap
Starting point is 00:27:27 space in the offseason so they have a lot of room to maneuver and go get a goalie and that fourth round pick they got back is their second highest draft pick coming up for friday because they thursday i should say because they only had a third and like a sixth and a seventh so now they're picking in the third and the fourth oh they're actually getting some draft capital here that's kind of important to the edmonton oilers because they didn't have any picks which is kind of cool so getting that pick back i think means something to them and i wonder if there's a way you can finagle your way to get something else for the draft for arvidsson i just because he's a useful player like i don't think i think arvidsson's a bad player he's overpaid
Starting point is 00:28:07 yeah he's overpaid and and not by that much four mil four mil isn't four mil in every uh cap environment the new one where the cap's just going up and up four mil looks pretty good i think it's also maybe more difficult to rack up the points on the oilers than people realize if you're not on that top power play unit like where's your oxygen coming from right um if you're not was he on the second powerful unit like how many power play points did he have this past season i'd love to know was it more than five i'm willing to bet no right mcdavid's gonna get an insane amount of points he's conor mcdavid of course he's gonna get all the opportunities because he ought to same with dry saddle same with nuge same with hyman perry's gonna get his
Starting point is 00:28:57 cookies this as well especially if hyman's out right but if you're not in that group of six seven guys which i think they thought he would be that's the disappointing part you're not gonna get any points what do you got for us jesse do you want to take a guess uh i didn't see damn uh i'm gonna say three that's correct our man victor arvidson had one power play goal and two power play assists oh and he had 15 goals like even 27 points is poor 15 goals is pretty good you see what i'm saying yeah he plays like he's not dry side eller mcdavid he plays deep in the lineup for the edmonds and oilers like i don't expect him to put up 80 points look at how he was look at how he was with la 15 and 18 which is pretty good 15 and 18 now what alarms you is
Starting point is 00:29:48 the 18 but even before that 59 and 77 49 and 66 even the season before it's a bit disappointing he's half a point of game player i think it's a useful player san jose or someone like san jose to me is a perfectly logical landing spot totally i uh i think uh maybe we get a victor arvidsson renaissance season next year like that's a guy who's primed to be like no i'm not done yet 32 well and if you here go back to that page look at his giveaways he'd never had more than 40 in a season and he had 67 last year that's a lot i think the most telling thing on that page is the atoi his average ice time goes down to 14 minutes the least amount he's played in his entire career this is what i'm saying like it's difficult to get your cookies
Starting point is 00:30:37 yeah i think i think that's a really important point his role on the edmonton oilers did not fit his salary or the type of player he is he's going to go somewhere else and have a little bit more success and the edmonton always i think can recoup assets for him whether it's a simple draft pick or something more than that like i think it'll be a decent trade for them so the rumor out there staying with the oilers is that cory perry is looking for a two-year deal at perhaps two to two and a half million per two is wild two-year deal he's 40 but already cj keeps saying and he's right old guys are having a moment i mean he looked great he did he had 10 goals in the playoff and you're not signing him like like cory perry you're not signing for the first 40
Starting point is 00:31:16 games of the year you're asking you're looking for hey what's what are you doing from january onwards right two years is crazy for somebody who's 40 yeah so yeah so three million dollars is crazy for somebody who's 40 you give them three million for one year yes because he's cory perry because he's cory perry yeah yeah you're pretty much guaranteeing you're going in the Stanley Cup final. Well, yeah, you're guaranteed to lose it, but that's okay. Based on how his career goes.
Starting point is 00:31:40 Yeah, but can you like trade him or bench him after the conference final? Yeah. He was legitimately good for them in the cup final too. He can play with high-end players, right? Like the legs aren't there the way they used to be,
Starting point is 00:31:51 but the hand eye sure is. Well, I guess the part, the cheeky part is like, okay, let's say he signs for two years. He doesn't look good after year one. Well, you pay him all. Basically, if you're signing that deal, you're signing all the bonuses up front and then you're but doesn't he have like a reconstructed
Starting point is 00:32:09 knee like if if he were to get ltir'd it is plausible sure i also look at that and i go okay is cory perry looking for that kind of money guaranteed or are we jonathan tay's bonus structuring this oh that's interesting who's reporting the the money amount uh it was out there this morning i don't have it on me at the moment it was uh true rumors it was not it was not one of those since he stopped making money with the anaheim ducks he's never been paid over 1.5 million dollars and he's never seeked a contract higher than that he's gone from 1.5 to 750 to a million to a million to 775 to 775 to 1.1 million so it would be odd for him to seek a three million dollar contract at this point are the ducks still paying him two and a half by the
Starting point is 00:33:00 way two and a half oh that's that's still that's still way above whatever uh he's getting paid no they're not they're not paying and listen just because he says he wants it doesn't mean he's getting it yeah that's also part of this right like he might not get it the ducks uh contract expired in 2019 damn yeah they bought him out and paid him oh actually the buyout expired in 21 so that's the answer his agent's name was mark guy mark guy hey guy uh i just get his agency bought out by stan buddy so i i i think i think it'd be a little odd for somebody to go out and pay him two million bucks because i think cory perry's very comfortable taking like almost league men a couple times and then just above league men with the uh edmunds i wondered if because the
Starting point is 00:33:48 cap's exploding though where he goes listen listen i know that i'm not a 775 guy i know that i'm probably better than a 1.15 guy yeah so if i start my ask at two and a half and i get it down to 175 18 might be okay with that i think 1.5 makes sense 1.8 probably makes sense that's on the higher end do you do two years jess no no i don't think you can i don't think you can i wish i wish the nhl had team options so you could do a one a one and one yeah i wonder why they don't i don't understand that there's because it gives players and teams options control and options and i love team options i always find that exciting like when oh somebody's gonna say yes or somebody's gonna say no player option yeah i'm declining the player
Starting point is 00:34:36 options would be cool sometimes it's difficult to consume another sport as a hockey primary fan because Kyrie turned down his team option, and I read that, and I went, and it's like, oh, and then he signed a three-year contract extension. I'm like, oh. He turned down the one year to re-sign for three. By the way, I don't think he's playing next year,
Starting point is 00:34:58 and Stephen A. Smith said he got duped by the Mavs. He got duped? Yeah, he's saying that Kyrie got underpaid. He's getting $40 million, and he's not playing next year properly. I think he wanted a three-year deal with $40 million guaranteed each year. I think that's a pretty good life. That's society outgrown Stephen A. Smith.
Starting point is 00:35:18 That's a crazy take. Are we done? I think that ask is the ask we hear at this time of year at all times. If it's a true report, I think the guys ask for the sun and the moon in these negotiations, and eventually they come down to something that makes sense. Now, here's something that Pierre Lebrun just tweeted. He said, this trade is not just making room for Evan Bouchard's raise from his expiring $3.9 million cap hit,
Starting point is 00:35:44 but Leon Dreisaitl is jumping from $8.5 million to $14 million. That's a big jump. So combined, the Oilers need another $10 to $12 million in cap space between those two players alone on next year's cap. Kane trade helps, but Oil will try to move Arvidsson as well. So here's my question. $14 million, and they need another $10 to $12 million. that means bouchard is 10 or 11 million oh yeah wow dude go look at his i'm not i'm not disputing
Starting point is 00:36:12 it it's just man the oilers have the new core four i'm the first person to be like yo some of his low lights are genuinely hilarious right in the playoffs and awful his his career playoff resume for a 25 year old is a 25 year old defenseman insane is shocking yep it's he's already one of the like top 20 or something all time yep he's like up there with paul like it's insane it's completely insane the the orders do have 17 million dollars in cap space with that dry side all deal like already on the books okay so it i feel like it's other holes probably they want to fill yeah but it looks a little like reasonable right now the way it is planned out like they have an avenue to sign everybody and like 17 there what do you want to give bouchard 10 so you still got
Starting point is 00:37:00 seven left to fill out some other holes so you move that arvidsson deal there's another four you know and you bring somebody back maybe minus two so they it's i don't think it's dire in edmonton no and like i'm looking i'm just looking at the roster like i think putt colson could step into a bigger role yeah uh that's really it you know what they need they need some help yeah but they've i think they've done a pretty good job with the middle contracts like you're playing zach hyman and nuge the five middle contracts and then they're just sending out all the other ones the evander kane and arvidson and then nobody else is kind of stuck in that middle zone and then you have nurse who's an ugly contract but then on your d you're very comfy comfy with what you're
Starting point is 00:37:40 paying the guys yeah i hope at home i hope playoff at home i know he was hurt comes back to full form at home because he didn't look great no but he was hurt yeah uh two things i'm noticing looking at this number one we're talking about all the cap space they have trent frederick's uh contract is not registered oh yeah so they have less than you think um also wow if they're not able to get connor mcdavid done after next season they have no goalies they here you scroll down just a tiny bit who's a ufa stetcher's ufa kulak's a ufa wallman's a ufa ekholm's a ufa scroll up a little bit uh max jones is ufa dave thomas heck is a ufa uh adam henrik is a ufa victor arvidsson is a ufa and then there's mcdavid holy shit like especially losing essentially your whole decor like this is
Starting point is 00:38:36 set up to be a huge swing season for the oilers like they're gonna go for it yeah but after that oh boy oh boy it might hurt it might hey if connor stays then if they win you live yeah yeah and also if you win yeah yeah so i i think uh yeah you got to get connor to stay you got to win you got to fucking you got at least get to the finals i i know that i don't know listen i'm i'm not totally convinced that uh first off that an extension doesn't get done this summer guys and the and the oilers beat reporters seem to think it's going to happen yeah before the end of the The dry saddle extension got done, I believe, the first week of September, September 2nd.
Starting point is 00:39:20 So you can wait all summer and then it gets done. And I'm sure they will wait because you kind of want to get a sense of what your roster looks like this year. The other thing I would say is, okay, so you're Connor McDavid, right? And as much as I want him to come to Toronto, I'll just be straight up about that.
Starting point is 00:39:34 And I think the Leafs should be planning for that and hoping and crossing their fingers. If you're Connor McDavid and you make the finals again, but don't win, you've got one other team with a better shot at the cup than the team you're on. Florida. That's what I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:39:47 Right? Like, you want to win, you're in the finals two years in a row. Oh, you took Florida at seven, run it back. I mean, I sure would. You know what? What did Dallas fire?
Starting point is 00:39:57 I don't know if it gives you a better chance. What did Dallas fire Pete DeBoer for? Look how close you got. Well, they fired Pete DeBoer because the players were like, get that man out of here. And then they lost over and over again? In the same spot?
Starting point is 00:40:08 Yeah. Over and over again? Yeah, I'm just saying. But that's a top four team. It's not a top two team. it's a little different sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use
Starting point is 00:40:26 my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and they're way around on that it's like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper thing and the and the washer thing chemicals you gotta have the right chemicals see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list

Starting point is 00:41:50 fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer register today at pmcfwalk.ca hey do you use the internet no you don't use it no now tell me if you did use the internet you might want to protect yourself on the internet because i hear some nefarious things can happen on the internet okay and i am trying to sell you something security and safety steve doesn't use the internet so he can't use this but i use the internet adam so i will jesse be taking advantage of nord vpn would you want to take take advantage of 5 000 plus server options meaning no show or game is out of your reach i would like to do that sometimes i like to watch out of market game or in market games uh that are blacked out the regionally blacked out yeah like the freaking ottawa senators
Starting point is 00:42:38 are like right down the street and we can't watch them locally here and it's annoying yeah and listen i only watch them to lose but but hey listen if i want to watch if i want to hate watch of my least favorite team how will i do that without nordvpn is that right great question you know so uh there's also like you know the option to just hey you've got uh you've got this streaming service and you want to check out that same stream streaming service but in another country where it has different shows that's kind of helpful too right so i'll go to nordvpn.com slash dangle get a huge discount off your nordvpn plus uh plan plus four additional months so we're going to give you the huge discount and the four additional months for steve dangle podcast listeners
Starting point is 00:43:20 nordvpn.com slash dangle uh and by the way it's completely risk-free nord's 30-day money back guarantee guarantees that if it doesn't work for you get your money back within 30 days it's nord uh on to the maple leafs oh hell yeah uh pierre lebrun finally came out and said it we've been speculating asking wondering what what is the deal what's the deal with john tavaris what's the deal that's going to get it done and lebron finally threw some numbers out there so we got something to work back from because you know there's the whole conversation about the leafs apparently not offering yes uh four million dollars or something yet yet and then there is the conversation about is it long is it short he thinks he could you know i think somebody said he could get the
Starting point is 00:44:03 brock nelson seven and a half million dollar deal over three years this summer myrtle was on the radio saying he could get probably eight because there's no centerman and there would be a bidding war 38 goals last year now LeBron is saying I believe and he said this on SportsCenter I watched it and he wrote it down I believe that if the Maple Leafs put a 20 million dollar deal over four years so five million each year in front of Tavares he would sign it neither side is quite there yet but I think that ends up being the sweet spot if that if this gets done in the next seven days I'm looking at that like what's the hold up I know a lot of league fans are like nope get rid of them ripped the bandit up man five million bucks for 38 goals for 38 goals 30 goals that's
Starting point is 00:44:48 great and by the end of it like 2025 folks actually that's the year this year it starts in 2025 stop it you sorry sorry no like that's good listen i i i know i get accused of being unreasonable about this team and being like no change for the sake of change this is one where i'm like guys it's five million bucks give your head a shake john tavaris coming back next season even if he's not the same player would be making less than half guys you're not finding this on the open market like i'm looking i'm like oh mikhail grandlin's kind of interesting well mikhail grandlin is i don't think signing this contract yeah he might make more yeah yes that's what i'm saying no if if tavaris would do five times four then you can go which is five mil times
Starting point is 00:45:40 maybe probably not get a third line center yeah it's dude it's that that would be insane value and what about year four well what about it let's talk about it in four years when the cap is 11 billion dollars yeah please give me that contract immediately yeah great sign it i love what really encouraged me about that lebrun thing is it he's he thinks if tavaris was offered that it would get done oh this is getting done 100 i'm not even worried save this clip for when he he goes and signs with the broods signs with the eyeliners no uh jesse i do you think i i want to ask you specifically even at 20 million over four which is a reasonable deal for if you take the name out of it and the history out of it yes stats suggest that's a hell of a deal totally would you trade
Starting point is 00:46:38 him for lucas raymond is this is this a deal that the leafs should make or is this enough departure from what we have seen because just like everybody else john sort of disappeared against the panthers yeah after game two yeah no i a hundred percent understand the idea of a full shake-up and including john tavarez and you're just doing it because it's different and they need something different but yeah at that price it's reasonable enough that you bring it back and it's just too good because you're not getting anything like that out there but i'm encouraged by the fact that it's not done it means that the leafs are playing a little hardball and trying to get a better deal on this which is something they haven't done in the past yes so we should be
Starting point is 00:47:23 applauding them for not just handing out that deal and having that in front of him if that's the line that gets it done they shouldn't offer him that to him until like they're desperate well the number kept climbing like in reports for a while and i was like oh my god this is gonna end up being six and no one's gonna be happy about it's gonna be like the opposite of marner whereas we've been talking about like 14 15 and he's gonna go somewhere and he's gonna sign like the ransom and deal 12 and a half and after an enough time of the darren ferris propaganda machine we're going to believe that 12 and a half is a discount where you know tavaris it was climbing climbing climbing and then it's going to be five and we're going to go ah yeah i like five is okay i 4.5
Starting point is 00:48:06 would have been really nice like the duchesne number the matt duchesne number is cool because matt duchesne is getting paid still from nashville so he's making 12 and a half this year boatload of money and he has been all this time but like john tavarez gets to make money by being a toronto maple leaf like the the the tax advantage that the leafs have is being the leafs and the money that john tavarez rakes in not just today but 40 years from now when he shows up at every alumni event and as i played for the least for 15 years and he's still getting paid to do things like that yeah what do they say half a half a million oh my to do autographs every like how about every july 1st is the best day of your life annually annually you get the best day of your life
Starting point is 00:48:49 because the leafs pay you like 15 million yeah and then bonuses the advantage of making usd and canada is also nice like something that never gets talked about the all these guys make american money and the canadian dollar keeps falling so that money just keeps going up in canada i feel like the leaf should play hardball with everybody especially somebody who wants to be here because they get to be a leaf and that is a crazy advantage in the hockey world in terms of making money your endorsements are crazy like whatever whatever money don't remember or don't forget john tavaris don't remember don't remember this don't remember uh don't forget that john tavaris had like a dempster's deal before like several years before he was a leaf uh and also oh what
Starting point is 00:49:31 was the store rabba yeah or it was like a coconut water he was like yeah he was on the side of a grocery store in an islanders jersey in toronto yes like you people forget like this is part of the the and we'll talk about brad marsh and in a second i don't know why the leafs don't do this more they did it with stamkos he didn't sign here and they seem to have just abandoned it but the toronto maple leaves have uh a unique position in the market because they're in the city in the country where most of the head offices are yes most of the advertising head offices are here and you can go to the free agents and go hey listen you sign here one of our key partners is canadian tire they will bring you on as their prime athlete they will pay you this much so
Starting point is 00:50:12 you'll be making this money why can't you do that they tried to do it with samco so when i was the team when i hear that the lease won't give him five million dollars i'm like yeah they shouldn't just give him what he wants because they should at some point in the tenure as a franchise the hundred whatever years they've been around swing your thing around and act like you're the big dog beg your pardon like act like you're the toronto maple leafs and the mecca of hockey like morgan riley who's probably the sixth fifth most popular leaf is the face of a pizza chain here in toronto and insurance and insurance company man that's a big deal he's just on tv all the time doing stuff and like there's a good commercial to that and it's a good commercial all of them are like
Starting point is 00:50:57 eventually john tavaris has got to give something back for being a toronto maple leaf if you want to stick around and fail here year in year out yeah there's a there's a price to be paid yeah your failure has got to give you give us something for your failure now geez obviously his this money has been spread over years and the dollar fluctuates whatever whatever if tavaris do you think i was talking about if his 77 million dollars that the leafs paid him over the course of this deal was paid all today it would be again 77 million dollars in the country that he lives in it would be 105 million 804 455 canadian dollars and 26 canadian why don't they why don't they write that into the salary cap why don't they why don't they limit canadian teams to whatever
Starting point is 00:51:47 the dollar is percentage at every moment because a lot of the times that usd to cad conversion when the dollar solo is as advantageous of the taxes you're saving in only the 41 games you play in texas because you signed with the stars or whatever give me your phone why i want to see how recently you called bill zito i want to see it i want to see the phone every day every day we chat bill zito laser item from florida yeah no i give bill zito all the tips on how to run a team yeah he's like you know jesse i saw you win that cup in nhl 24 yeah this kid knows what he's talking about the pizza box up jesse he did the pizza box is a gm in florida yeah um brandon carlo's name is out there uh sarah volleys mentioned him in his trade board we've heard
Starting point is 00:52:33 it floating around it's odd and the leafs don't want to trade him however this is a guy with two years at 3.48 million because remember 485 million because remember the bruins i think they retained 15 or something on that deal yes um uh who is 28 in his prime he played 83 games last year so he's healthy scores very little which the leafs kind of that's an issue for them which has to be solved i think by morgan riley next year um he is he made instantly when he when he got here they put him with morgan riley and morgan's numbers rebounded yes this is a guy that i don't think they should move on from no trading him's a mistake he's an insanely valuable trade asset is he i'm not like his number three million dollars number six point eight sorry six
Starting point is 00:53:25 and six isn't he six foot seven six foot eight no that would make him one of the biggest players he's big he's very he's like i don't know six five is he six five five yeah oh damn according according to nhl.com so he's six four okay okay he's a big dude round down to six three six five metric make him six two twenty yeah and we really shouldn't have people competing with jesse for tallest man no that's but anyway no carlo wins no i i listen you start telling people i'm six one so you guys like come across as like 411 i know i was so i was telling we were talking yesterday about that i'm like steve and i look like two round eggs next to jesse in every picture I'm only 6'1".
Starting point is 00:54:05 I'm going to kick your ass. No, you're not. We are not Portnoy-sized. I'm going to start posing on my tippy-toes, Jesse. I'm 5'11". 4'11", Steve Dangle. No, at events, they'll come up to me, and I hear it for Adam, too, and they go, oh, you're taller than we thought.
Starting point is 00:54:22 And I go, oh, thank you. And then they'll just go up to Jesse and go, wow! Look at you! You're a museum piece. I think it's just because you guys are really tiny. yeah i hate you guys make me look really tall i don't like this six one i don't like where this conversation's going but brandon carlo tall man also extremely valuable to the leafs and here's what i think okay and i'm just going to give you my thoughts on it remember i'm of the opinion that
Starting point is 00:54:48 this is a step back here you're on a 24 month cycle you you save some cap room for the season because somebody's gonna fail here's what's gonna happen this year everybody's saying 31 teams are trying to get better well they can't and the Leafs are good and I think the Leafs are locked to make the playoffs I mean we've said that about a few teams but I do think the Leafs on a nine year playoff streak are going to do quite well next year and they're going to be fine and they're going to make the playoffs the idea that you would trade from a strength the you know whether it's goaltending or defense which I would argue are now two strong assets of the Toronto Maple Leafs to address a weakness which is issues up front to me is a huge mistake they've made in the past
Starting point is 00:55:29 that they should never do again and so if you are playing craig berube's system you're not going to score a ton of goals you're gonna you're gonna try to limit opportunities you want to control the puck the play a little bit more ideally next year uh what do you need you need great defensemen to do that and you need great goaltending behind them and you know what's available a lot of forwards throughout the year so trading brandon carlo for me you better bring back a monster hall and i don't think it's available that's insane i don't see like that they're entertaining that idea or people are suggesting they should entertain that forward good enough like you need a center you need a center and you need it to be a set a genuine bona fide 70 point center who the hell
Starting point is 00:56:13 is trading a 70 point center nobody yeah that's why it's not i don't understand the logic in moving carlo which is great but first name that came to mind was like troy terry yeah yeah maybe i don't know why they would trade him in ziggurat yeah i don't know what the hell are you doing no i i i uh no and then you would have true but gudas carlo just hardened my point is i guess that with carlo uh you've got you know what you have with the goaltending you know what you have your defense you know what you have forwards you can figure out people figure that out and i also like the idea of listening to the 40 billion people who came through here and suggested hey perhaps you want to de-emphasize the core four yes john is not going to be a core four guy anymore
Starting point is 00:57:00 maddie nise is gonna make five million bucks maddie nise is yeah nylander is yeah matthews is okay there's no core four anymore how about we play as a uh on a larger scale as a team and i want i want to challenge austin matthews and william nylander to take up the mantle because if you guys aren't performing well we're going to need other guys to perform but now it's just down to you you can't just sit rest on your laurels and hope mitch or john will take it up remember there's only one puck yeah with the with the discussion we had with the oilers it's difficult to get your cookies if you're outside of that first power play unit and like the couple spares that they'll throw in to the top power play sometimes yep right if Tavares comes back
Starting point is 00:57:45 it's Matthews Nylander it's um uh Tavares it's nice and then Marner played D yeah like people are gonna be Riley which is gonna be great because now they know Morgan Riley doesn't have a shot from the point and he's gonna run the power play and teams are gonna be able to cover the other four guys who can shoot and whenever riley has the puck it's going to be like muffin from the point or pass pass it's not necessarily going to be riley and it is necessarily going to be riley seven and a half million dollars well then i think they'll live i think you i think you need a guy but you need a defenseman from the point that has a shot i'd rather carlo and have somebody else run it at least carlo can shoot jake mccabe can run a power play like it's i especially with that talent
Starting point is 00:58:28 out there um i think it's just that you know we haven't necessarily see them seeing them do it oel is an option we all can shoot too yeah not an overly like sexy option but like okay yeah you lose some playmaking there um a lot of playmaking there and you got willie for that yes willie willie could run these can pass for god's sake yeah but you don't want him to you want him shooting hopefully if the wrist is healing and then you got nice and you got tovaris and you got the like all these players are they're grown-ups they can fend for themselves they'll be okay like i i think you you i think you're able to figure that out okay carlo by the way does not have a great shot so you don't think so no no it's it's it's hard it's a hard shot sure
Starting point is 00:59:09 hey man he's not a damn power play i'd rather at least have a hard shot that might hit the net no no okay well listen if you like change-ups from the point that's your guy i'm not a fan of of him running power play one next year i'm really not at all please please please it has to be right they probably don't do it they had a forward do it instead of him yeah right i could that's them running five forwards on the first unit and the second unit's riley and or oel does the the top one i don't think that's a problem max domey playing d maybe you should text your buddy mark savard and ask him what his thoughts are you know what yeah i'll do it you won't i won't you won't uh david comp uh before we move on from brandon carlo he was one of seven nhlers
Starting point is 00:59:51 steve you love this stat to play over 82 games i love that he played 83 games one nhler this season played 85 games steve are you aware of who that is i think i know who it is i know who it is because i played spark trivia that is cody cc cody cc won the games played competition this year They're playing in Dallas and San Jose, 85 games, which is quite the accomplishment. It makes me mad that Fabian Zetterlin was got for what he was got for. I wish the Leafs had known that. I do love the Sharks with all my heart.
Starting point is 01:00:23 I do want to beat them up for that. The other six guys or five guys who played over 82 games this year, Will Borgen played 84, Zetterlin played 84, Drew O'Connor played 84, Charlie Coyle played 83, Mikel Granlin played 83, and brandon carlo played 83 can you do all time and turn off some results yeah i can tell you the most games played in a season i think it's 86 well that's nuts because they did have two years where they played 84 that's right that's right i remember that guys would have got traded i don't know i just i love that stat because it's such a unique set of circumstances it is going to 84
Starting point is 01:01:00 in two years we're gonna have an 80 the 82 game season is going away the 84 game season is coming in we don't know uh and no it is and uh and what's weird about it is the nhl is like no we need more needless regular season games let's not do a play-in tournament less less the people enjoy it you know so stupid again just leave it at 82 and do a play-in from six to six to ten as a content creator go to 90 games we want a 12 month hockey i got a mortgage i got a mortgage go ahead jess the most games played in a season mark lamb play oh there's a bunch of guys at 85 actually cody cc actually is tied for second ever that's crazy uh cody cc tyson berry rem murray bill garen joe reekie mark land lamb and glenn anderson are the only players all time to play 85 games
Starting point is 01:01:54 okay okay two players are at 86 tied for the most ever we have bob kudelski oh in 93 94 70 points played 86 games had 40 goals 30 assists 80 that was a negative 33 the 80s and early 90s are so funny they're crazy 40 goal season never heard of him my entire way he was traded from the expansion ottawa senators did the expansion florida panthers oh yeah there you go uh and number one tied for first as well we have jimmy carson there you go carson who played for the red great season two who played for the red wings and the kings 86 games 37 goals 36 assists was jimmy carson not a part of the gretzky trade am i crazy uh i want to say wasn't he a first overall pick yeah jimmy there's something about jimmy car he's an he had an interesting shorter
Starting point is 01:02:50 career but interesting career oh he's um one of the ken reed would know this he's the purple wiggle he's the purple wiggle hey by the way did i tell you i ran into ken reed at a taco joint this past weekend oh yeah and he he i was like ordering because it was like a digital ordering screen i'm like putting my order in and ken was mumbling about newfangled technology no no and this this this i felt like i saw something out of the corner of my eye flying by i'm like that there must be like a mosquito or something in here and then i got hit in the face with a napkin and it was ken and it was with his kids and wife and whatever so ken read uh he'll be coming on the show uh he's got some exciting things to happen this fall so we're we'll uh get
Starting point is 01:03:30 he announced yeah he announced the book two i think oh potential and then he's done right yeah no that's what he says he's nair two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer That's why every step and dollar raised matters. Starting point is 01:04:09 Henry, it is a liar. The Leafs are trying to move David Kopp. David Kompf had like a consecutive games played streak up until Sheldon Keefe scratched him a couple of years ago that ran into like 300 games. He only played 59 last year. And let's be honest, I don't think Berube is a fan. I don't think Kemp's a fan of Berube. I just don't think this is a systems fit.
Starting point is 01:04:28 That's OK. Two and a half million dollar centerman. And, you know, it's interesting. He's got two years left at 2.4. I think he's a capable player who just makes too much money. I know that he came from Chicago, but a team like Chicago makes a heck of a lot of sense, not just because they need warm bodies but david connor bedard does not need to be taking macklin celebrini does not need to be taking draws in the defensive zone i've been thinking
Starting point is 01:04:53 camp to chicago for over a month now and i've just been like too embarrassed to say it kind of makes sense it does not that maybe j uh kyle davidson doesn't i almost called him john davidson kyle davidson maybe doesn't care or want but i look at that guy and i go hey man here's a guy who can kill penalties wins face-offs uh it's a it's a nothing contract especially over the next couple years when that becomes literally like two percent of your cap uh and you've got if you've got young centerman in your lineup and you want to uh make sure that they're not taking key defensive zone face-offs he's perfect rebuilding teams do this all the time and people always throw their arms up when they you know when the ducks go give big money to radco gudas or something like that guys
Starting point is 01:05:36 like they're not up against the cap they're not trying to win a stanley cup immediately like these guys fill a purpose who remembers daniel winnick who was acquired by the leafs and then traded at the deadline and then they twice signed him in the off season and traded him at the deadline again and roman polak yeah twice you know it was wasn't he a leaf thrice polak yes i think it was a leaf thrice pretty sure uh like i think they're going to be able to trade this player um there are like teams need this kind of player like you know what young players notoriously excel at is defensive responsibilities no they don't i i think the blackhawks would greatly benefit from having someone like david camp and the sharks and i'm i'm not blowing smoke and trying
Starting point is 01:06:22 to get rid of this guy either who did the sharks have last year who they traded uh luke cunning like there's your luke cunning replacement yeah yeah which is a crazy thing to say i know but role players man i do think there's value there do i think the leafs are going to get a ton back no this is where the comment section is gonna be like oh these guys think they might even have to go to be great they might have to sweeten it honestly well no you're not doing that you might at that point you just keep them you're not you're not throwing a pick like a sixth adam no the cap is why am i doing it if i'm the sharks you need a lead cutting replacement give me a pick swap then no well pick swap okay yeah a fifth for a fit like let me move up okay
Starting point is 01:07:03 i'll move down 20 spots yeah sure fine you know what i mean i would do that there you go you never see that by the way sure you do not yes i wish we called them pick swaps in the nhl we should well on draft day so this is the frustrating thing we're like evander kane for a fourth and in 72 hours we're gonna be like it's a vander kane for the 150th overall pick or whatever the hell it is that's what it turns into on the draft yeah it stops being about fourths and fifths and sixth and it's like okay we went from pick 155 to 127 look at us now we can get a guy who had 45 points in the whl instead of 30 yeah yeah i don't know you know what i mean yeah some kid named gunner i don't i hope so or gunner wolf yeah you know or yeah or some european noted
Starting point is 01:07:58 alan walsh client mons goose or mons goose mons goose pause who is that he's a he's i think he's going in the third or fourth round this year he's a swedish goalie he better be mons goose it's the Alan has, if you look at his client list, Yvonne Yvonne, Marcel Marcel, Mons Goose. He's got the best named clients in the NHL. We need the Gooses Loose. Silly Goose. Oh, Silly Goose is on the loose. Gets drafted by Anaheim.
Starting point is 01:08:27 Duck, duck, Goose. Stop. There it is. Come on now. What's his first name? Mons. Mons? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:08:35 Mons Goose. Where's he from? I believe it's Sweden. I'm going to. Oh. Goose. uh he is from yeah sweden uh vastoros wow yeah if he has a really have a ton of swedish clients no he doesn't back right yeah if he if he has like a really emotional moment goosebumps he
Starting point is 01:08:57 played with uh far you shad uh juniors last year so uh yeah he was pretty good too if if he drops like m-a-n-s-g-o-s if the third round g-o-o-s if the third round passes yeah and he doesn't and he hasn't been picked yet whose mons is this stop i really need the leafs to get this guy yeah yo you need mons goose i need mons goose i think we would have to get maddie a mons goose leafs jersey does it bother you that this gentleman was born in 2007 does that make you feel what month i this is important because i began lfr in october 2007 oh my god oh he's just slightly older than lfr holy shit dude are any is there a way to find are any draft eligible players born or no i guess the cutoff would be like september 15th or 15th
Starting point is 01:09:57 first i forget one or the other yeah so no so next year next year we get people who are born after lfr are being drafted into the nhl oh shit mon's goose by the way six five only a buck 96 right now maybe adds maybe doesn't because he's a goaltender so he's gonna be limber uh i was gonna say though he's not not to be cheeky that is legitimately a heavy-ish goalie. Yeah, yeah, because he's got to be able to move, and the pads are so thick these days that he doesn't need to be
Starting point is 01:10:33 a very thick individual, so that 6'5 is what's really going to help him. I'm going to text down. I got to know. 198, sorry. Bobrovsky. How do you spell it? Monskoos? How do you think it is? Bobrovsky's 6'2, so
Starting point is 01:10:47 he's shorter than Jesse. 180 pounds. Yeah, you ever see a picture of he's a tiny little man yeah he's a small dude i think he's 180 pounds with pads on yeah i don't believe no i know borowski's like 96 pounds if you drew a stick figure it would be accurate yeah like it's it's crazy so yeah mon's goose is maybe not that far off borowski reminds me of like somebody who's in cirque du soleil yes like the dude is just athletic and thin and agile like there's a reason he's one of the best goaltenders in the world yeah like he deserves that 10 million
Starting point is 01:11:19 he reminds me of like a villain who would tie a damsel to the train tracks and then sneak away like this uh i just texted alan uh i need to know everything about mons goose he mentioned it on agent provocateur well how long was it uh it was it was at the end he's like i've got i asked him about like who he's getting ready for the draft and he ran through his thing and then he's again we've got mons goose and i'd heard of him before and was like tell me about mons clip it and put it online i know why don't you listen to the show what are you doing all the way home legitimately i will um oh yeah this guy's 180 pounds for sure you know what jesse you know what i love about 180 pounds holding the cup he's like he's like
Starting point is 01:12:05 you got to listen to agent provocateur and then we bring up agent provocateur he's like i missed that you know you know man try to sell our product a little bit i can't be a hundred percenter on everything yeah sorry what's the network called uh super handsome bearded man ah is that what it is okay so there's a photo of sergey brodsky tiny pads boneless goalie look at that no pads 180 yeah i don't believe that oh the pads are for protection for the air on his sides i could pick him up from his armpits steve if you ran at brodsky and were able to connect you could snap him in half no he would still rock me you think so he's a professional athlete let's be honest i you don't think that guy would be really good on the trapeze oh yeah dude and the only
Starting point is 01:12:50 problem trapeze is they got to be short yo can circuit bobroski do a gainer probably i bet like a like a basically a standing backflip and usually off of a rock cliff again i don't i get those guys are usually short like look at simone biles tiny yeah but he's so athletic that he can do that stuff at 6'2". What NHL players can do a gainer? My expose for the athletics end. Look at the difference!
Starting point is 01:13:17 It's crazy. Anyways, where were we? Monsgoose. Monsgoose. One more. The right side looks like the next evolution of the left side in Pokemon.
Starting point is 01:13:32 Bobrovsky! Dun dun dun! and like the one on the left is just bob you know yeah this is like bulbasaur to uh to what's what's venusaur what's the ultimate one uh bulbasaur war turtle there we go which should be venusaur uh and venusaur war turtle was objectively cooler than venusaur yeah look at that shit okay anyway sorry all right uh i i and another thing i put this one in there as a Leafs potential. Like, we talk about
Starting point is 01:14:04 Michael Granlund's name has come up. I like him. We all like him. And I think, hey, signing Michael Granlund and John Tavares, which David Alter suggested
Starting point is 01:14:11 in his article today, why not get both? That solves the problem that they've had since Caudry, which is they don't have a third line center. People are at me in the comments going,
Starting point is 01:14:19 well, which one of them is going to be the third line center? I don't know. The worst one? But here's another name. I want to push back on that. I'll push back on you.
Starting point is 01:14:29 Oh, please do, Daddy. JT Comfer's name is out there and he makes 5.1 he's 32 points listen is he the greatest he's not the greatest but at 5.1
Starting point is 01:14:42 you're really selling yeah you're really you're doing great I know this guy played a big role in Colorado he was legitimately very good there's a reason he's getting paid
Starting point is 01:14:50 this much money strong defensive center you need more than 32 points which is why I lean Granlin but you're going to pay more for Granlin second is too much second is too much
Starting point is 01:14:58 but there's a bona fide third line center at five million bucks and that i'm like hey that sounds good i i am hung up on something though um i don't like max domi as a full-time center i don't especially obviously no one does yeah max likes it especially losing marner's ability to facilitate from the right like i i think max domi being a full-time right winger would be the right move he's a complimentary guy to who can play with better like we saw it with matthews and bertuzzi yeah he can do that i'm relatively comfortable having him play any on any of the top three lines as long as he's on the right
Starting point is 01:15:39 right wing up the middle or left nope no thank you i'm not interested got it scott lot is more than just a fourth line center we know this because he has demonstrated it throughout his nhl career and you paid a holy shitting first round pick for him along with nikita grabenkin he's the third line center to me okay like he doesn't make third line center money he did when he was with the flyers uh what's the plan there well i mean he's a he's at his best the last the previous two years before this one with the flyers he's a 40 point guy yes so that's jt Comfort that would be yeah but you have JT Comfort yeah but remember the flyers were ass somebody had to score for them so even if they're comparable like even when the flyers were good
Starting point is 01:16:33 back in the day when they were good he's a he's a 32 point guy he makes he his cap it with the Leafs is less than a third of what Comfort yeah he's the third line center to me okay um he the Leafs used him as not the third line center because it made sense to down the stretch yep we know he had a very rocky start with the team but I think coming out of camp oh he'll be fine McCabe had a rocky start with the team and then he went to camp it was like irreplaceable yes like to me he's the third line center and then you I mean fourth line Jesus you should be able to find that well we need to find fourth line Jesus that's what we're looking you should be able to find it somewhere for heaven's sake so okay i don't think the target for the leaf should
Starting point is 01:17:21 be like the red wings third line center who's making too much money like i'm just saying like who can you get cheap because they have nothing to trade i is is that cheap like i mean no no the money's not cheap but the asset value out is cheap and i think oh maybe you can get eiserman to pay for it like well well yeah you could be a first round pick in there i'm looking at this i'm just the reason i brought up confer's name is because okay you can go get grandlin i loved him for dallas in the playoffs i did too you're getting creative and i like that's that's all but i love that you're poking holes i guess my question is if you're brad for living scott lawton is he your full-time center on the third line or do you look to upgrade that and when that
Starting point is 01:18:02 person inevitably somebody's getting injured then you slot lawton in and he can take maybe he's a right shot and the other person's the left shot and they can trade off face-offs because you know hockey people love them initially like that like is that something you pay when you pay a first round pick for this player he should be a center okay like i think that's what they got him for and then they never use them like that and i think it's unreasonable to expect to spend that kind of money and not get a centerman back like yep why isn't scott lot in the center i was really confused about that down the stretch but like at some point you got to make the decision okay this is what we are in the playoffs and they put them on a line and damn it if it wasn't very effective against
Starting point is 01:18:41 the panthers it was very or sorry sorry it was very effective against the sends it started effective against the panthers and then after paul maurice made a switch no one was effective against the panthers so that was frustrating but um i think the other great thing is hopefully with the restructuring of the way money is distributed on the leafs he has better line mates on the third line yeah and i think it's different going into training camp as opposed to just acquiring him and finding the fit for him on the wing there i think now that you have a summer you play it out lawton who's the center should be your third line center and that's crazy amount of value for what you're paying yes i agree you should figure out try and figure out how that works because wingers
Starting point is 01:19:22 are so easy to get yes get them some good wingers start training camp you think this guy's your third line center go get whoever you plug in there whether it's still comp or not like that's a okay solution for your fourth line if you're paying lawton so little to be your third line center and then go find wingers which are the easiest position to get hot and go go and look at the list of free agents there are dozens of quality maybe not dozens but there are plenty of quality centers available for two million or less yeah who you can put as your fourth line center and they still have david comp i don't love that but if that's how they have to start the seasons he'll be I don't think comp will be here but you're right now here's the question
Starting point is 01:20:02 guys okay so you've got the way the line I'm looking at at Puckpedia right now they don't have Tavares listed because he's not signed yeah so you got let's say like Kipper Kipper said yesterday that the Leafs don't view John Tavares as a second line center anymore which is why they are offering below five million right now now I don't mind paying five million in this new cap era for a third line guy I don't okay for a center at who like John Tavares who can score like he does so they want to find a second line center can I throw something sure you have 38 goals and 70 plus points and won most of his face-offs what about that is not a second line center I think your second line center can score 40 goals I think it's perfectly fine okay like
Starting point is 01:20:47 okay so but okay like are we kidding all right I'm just like for 11 mil I understand people didn't like the value for five we gotta screw our heads back on when it comes to John Tavares like I again I totally understand wanting to totally revamp everything if but if you need one for god's sake there's one available he wants to play here for a discount what are we doing and you're getting 30 goals out of that player yes that's very reasonable very reasonable for your second what if you could get 30 goals out of them on the third line and find somebody in the second line you because third line centers typically don't score 30 goals because there's only one putt i mean like wow the Leafs are fucking stacked yo like we got to talk about
Starting point is 01:21:31 them as like a yeah so you like anyway you like Domi on the right right yes sorry what i was i wasn't refuting you i'm completely disagreeing with Nick Kiprios well no i don't think you're disagreeing with Nick you're disagreeing with the person that that fed that to him from the organization i think the person who fed him that is feeding him bullshit okay fair enough now Domi on the right okay uh-huh the right side looks like this so far okay knee lander domey okay yarn croak reeves that's what's under nhl contract robertson plays mostly right is not signed that is true well he's under control yeah he is under control i think you can include him i okay you can include home so i will include robertson instead of reeves yes yeah that makes more
Starting point is 01:22:14 that robertson or holmberg kneelander domey yarn croak robertson in any order you want but kneelander and and uh whatever we're gonna be so the there is you know remember cal yarn croak is in the fourth of four years 2.1 million october he's got by the way partial freaking no trade unbelievable but i think they'd rather move comp than yarn croak which makes perfect sense because yarn croak is more useful than he's given credit for yes until the playoffs come well i don't need him to score goals and he was valuable to nashville when they went to the finals now it was a long time ago he was a center i know he was a center at the beginning of every period he took a face off against crosby my question is if you add like that that right side without
Starting point is 01:23:01 marner on it strangely enough feels a little thin uh your left side okay nize is an rfa Holmberg's in RFA McMahon and right now Quillen is penciled in there I would assume that Easton Cowan's
Starting point is 01:23:17 going to get a shot but I think that the Leafs would rather him be in the AHL at least to start the season we'll see no no I know that they would
Starting point is 01:23:24 prefer that I know that if wingers are readily available and I guess we'd have to go through which ones I look at I don't know
Starting point is 01:23:33 listen the Nick Robertson thing 14 goals had a big goal in the playoffs but was not playing in the Florida series. He did not have a big goal in the playoffs. Did he not?
Starting point is 01:23:44 No, you're thinking of the one where I was yelling and screaming because the Leafs were down 6-0, and he scored to make it 6-1. Wasn't there another big goal in the first round? The one where he stopped the shutout streak? No, the first round against Ottawa. There was a big goal that he scored. Maybe. It's difficult to remember every single goal.
Starting point is 01:24:03 I can tell you. Is it for you? That's shocking news. No. Well, this is why I'm starting to think I don't think it happened. He might have had a big assist. I thought he had a big goal. I think he had a really good game.
Starting point is 01:24:14 Didn't he come out hot? He did. He came out hot, and then they put in Pacioretty, and I thought it was confusing because Nick was good. Right. And then Patches was good also. And, of course, we think, we know the Leafs are interested in Max Pacioretty. You guys want the answer? Yes.
Starting point is 01:24:29 Nick Robertson's only playoff goal was the one in the 6-1 game. So, like an assist? he scored he got an assist in uh game one against ottawa that's probably what i'm thinking about victory he got an assist but yeah his only goal was that shutout huge and it was huge and let's be honest look at how big that goal was adam i think you misremembered he played one game that would be very much me one game guys in the second round yes big robertson was not this is not this is clearly a guy that i don't think he doesn't want to be here i think the leafs are like well you're you're here for now what are we doing here i mean damn that's great so i don't think
Starting point is 01:25:08 that that's like again with rfa why keep him you're not gonna play him well if you are gonna play he's he's a small you need bodies for an 82 game season nick robertson is very useful in the regular so so here's here's what i'm battling making like 800 grand come next year everyone wants to have a third line of Marchand, Lundell, and Lusterine in right now. That's available for one team. And it might not even be available for them. Right?
Starting point is 01:25:37 You're building right now, in June, you're building to the best of your ability. I'm not even going to say an October roster. You're building a September roster. Like, you're putting together okay,
Starting point is 01:25:52 this is good enough. There's two or three positions. that are up in the air and guys are going to fight it out and someone's going to get the job. Then you battle all the way until April. And there's your February lineup. You figure out the trade deadline post-lineup. Then you shore it up for the playoffs.
Starting point is 01:26:15 Nick Robertson, during the regular season, is a perfectly useful player. And I'm going to throw out the idea that he might even get better. Bobby McMahon didn't make his NHL debut until he was like, what, 27 yep robertson is still not even 24 i'm pretty sure and he's already got like 30 40 career goals to his name like he hasn't lived up to the huge expectations that have been given to him and yeah he asked for a trade and then you know what he did he signed and he had a banger preseason yep and then disappointed after that and then figured it out a little bit you know what i mean like
Starting point is 01:26:55 keep this guy i think it's totally fine i i wonder though can you get on the ufa market you get down a little bit it's kind of interesting because um you get guys like manji apani whose name has come up with the leafs he's 29 years old you need like two middle six wingers he had 28 points last year yeah okay 14 goals uh do you give kills penalties uh i'm i'm going to avoid anthony bevillier because i just can't i simply cannot i was really impressed you're not a fan i was impressed with him in that very specific situation where he was playing top line minutes with the caps and i think he should stay there i don't think anthony bevillier is a fit for the leafs manjapani is a middle six winner who probably plays in your third has shown evidence that he can play as high as
Starting point is 01:27:43 second uh bevillier you're gonna hate this this is kind of the definition of a middle six winger see a guy i look at justin brazeau oh would he come back now is he a middle six guy maybe not people are very hot and bothered by the idea of brandon taneff who had the exact same amount of points as justin brazeau if you're revamping the fourth line why not both brazeau taneff and whoever at center great who the hell wants to play that shit nobody like yeah why not both this this is we're gonna it's gonna be difficult for people to wrap their head around constructing this team uh differently than we have in years past and luke kunnen is available i didn't want to say it because i didn't want you to laugh at me but like that's a perfect fourth line target
Starting point is 01:28:30 yep so is sean corrali sure fourth line target but i'm looking at the third line and i guess my question to you guys is what do we want i know everybody if the if the you know the lindell luce ryan and marshand line is available to one team i get it yeah okay what do you want out of the third line because the the fourth line seemed to have with lorenz on it a little bit of an identity last year i'd love to see him back just for the vibes um but we don't know if that's going to happen the third line cannot be domi robertson yarn croak forget the we need an identity no not forget i need no no no no and i'll tell you why i forget okay because during the second line i think more games than not it was tavaris nylander who was the left pontus friggin holmberg yeah i think
Starting point is 01:29:17 he's got to be center he's got to be forward 13 or 14 yeah and like patch already i don't think he's going to do that for you throughout the regular season you probably do it sparingly in the playoffs that's if he resigns yep and if nothing is working you throw bobby mcmahon up there but then now your bottom six is useless so this is why i keep saying middle six because if you're able to go out and get Mangiapane now all of a sudden you got Nyes Mangiapane who plays with both
Starting point is 01:29:52 hands on a stick which is something I would love for a player in that position to do Holmberg doesn't do it if Mangiapane gets the puck there is the wildest fantation that he might score a goal then there's Pontus
Starting point is 01:30:07 Bobby McMahon gets the puck there is the dream that maybe he'll shoot it and it'll go in the net 20 last year and then there's pontus so i i know we got to focus on the third line but to me that was a massive gap like people are i think it'll listen to this and go middle six steve top six what are you talking about middle six is top partially if you have two of them i think bobby mcmahon is a perfect middle six guy like lower end yeah full time i need second line to be better in the playoffs but we're talking about regular season right now so yeah this is what i'm saying like full-time second line winger no i don't think he's good enough you you compliment him with manjapani i
Starting point is 01:30:49 think it might get done two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer register today at pmcfwalk.ca two names i want to i want to point you guys to that are available connor brown 30 points last year victor olufson in 56 games 30 points and if Vegas if the Vegas rumors with Marner are to be believed and we'll talk about some of those but just that Marner will probably end up there the cap room to sign him is gone
Starting point is 01:31:41 and by the way the reason that Vegas is gonna be able to sign Marner and not trade off their roster the sign and trade stuff respectfully that is certainly not what I've heard it's just so rarely um the uh Alex Petrangelo Freed even put it in 32 thoughts like this guy might not play next year yeah so you just put that on ltir and you're good but i love i like victor olsen's game he's 29 i don't think berube would connor brown is an interesting guy i think berube and brown would get along like a house on fire okay is that how is that yeah sure that can be yeah okay great now do you consider this is silly just i'm just throwing names out there because this is what this is hit me do you consider james van reams dyke at 36 who had 16 goals and 35 points 16 yeah good for
Starting point is 01:32:30 him do you bring in james van reams that can go okay james your whole thing is fourth line and we're gonna put you on the power play and just stand in front of the net and tip shit in no no well okay now let's let's to answer that let me ask another question okay remember how of the leafs were were uh first power play unit for like a minute 30 and the second unit like might as well not take the ice without marner does that change a little bit i well i think you got to see because if it does i'll consider it if it doesn't i think it's a waste of a roster spot another center you might want to consider okay i don't know if the thing with jvr was that last year they had the option to bring him in on a pto and he decided to go to columbus and he did the
Starting point is 01:33:19 training camp there and they ended up signing him so i think they would have probably taken a bigger swing at that if they actually wanted because they chose patcher ready yeah yeah so i feel like it they've already kicked the can on that and they said like no and his defense has always been really bad yeah so i assume like that they probably just don't want okay what about this and this guy is 28 and maybe he's due for a big fat raise i don't know but he'd sure maybe solve that hey at least compete with scott lodden for the third line center sure jack rosselbeck 40 points there's another little guy okay i'm listen i'm just saying he's not a bad player but like there's another 22 goals like i'm trying not to get caught up in the in the beef uh of it
Starting point is 01:34:04 all that matters i mean like listen you saw nick robertson play in the playoffs yeah and no disrespect to nick i thought i was a robertson booster going into last year but i saw what happened against the panthers and he got like he's the size well does matter he doesn't have the electric speed his skating's gotten a lot better a lot better yep but the size is a real thing that's a knock on his own all the time well exactly it's a knock on manjapani too um i'm telling you i'm telling you i i i think there's gonna be a lot of people especially analytically inclined who are just gonna be miserable in about a week what about a guy like and i think he's staying in detroit but patrick kane because matthews like that's who he grew up
Starting point is 01:34:47 idolizing he loves the way he plays it's an interesting thought he's a he's a guy who dishes he would instantly be on the first line with matthews i still see him as a bit of a time bomb yeah of course like uh listen last year six with hip injury i know last year went very well yeah but like that's a trade deadline i'm less apprehensive okay because there's just less runway to have something happen beginning of the season oh boy all right so then like like max patch ready can we just you know they're gonna text him until the olympics and call him honestly alan alan said we're gonna see lots of that we're gonna start to see lots of that i wouldn't be shocked if because patch ready's family's in michigan i wouldn't be shocked if
Starting point is 01:35:32 he didn't sign with anybody until january um but i don't know that for sure i'm just saying alan brought it up on the show patches fits the description of an older guy who doesn't need to play 82 games yeah but he's good in the playoffs i'm looking at you know these rumors about brad marchand are oh that he's going to stay in florida oh but oh but maybe not if he makes it to open market the leafs are going to offer the sun and the moon he is 37 the money has gone from seven to eight to eight and a half and now i was texted the other day nine million uh nice marsh and as your left side is pretty crazy but nine million four years wait nine yeah i just told you that i said i yeah but my brain didn't allow me to yeah even at seven is that a good call that almost
Starting point is 01:36:22 feels indecent that you said that it's like you said a swear i know now that's that there's so much shit out there of course the name like sam bennett was going to make 10 million dollars two weeks ago yeah he's now going to make seven and a half it's gonna be crazy when they both make six jesse are you on board with with brad marsh and on a four-year deal at that kind of term or that sorry not that kind of term that kind of money no i i don't know nine is psychotic yeah i don't what about eight and a half i don't think i'm gonna work backwards nine is a no yes eight and a half no eight no seven and a half
Starting point is 01:37:01 which is roughly where Matthew Niles is going to come in I'll learn four years I'll learn to like it seven million I also suggest you got to answer this too I'll learn to like
Starting point is 01:37:09 it I don't know if there's a reasonable contract that Brad Marchand wants that fits the Leafs in what they can do you said four years four years I mean Tanev signed
Starting point is 01:37:20 until he's 42 I don't think it matters listen you're paying all that in bonus up front marshand is not the type to just punch out but this if it were any other name attached to it we'd be like this guy is gonna get paid and he's not gonna try again for the rest of his life father time's undefeated like whether he wants his brain to do it or not his body's gonna catch up with him at some point father time by the way still only at a two and a half count against
Starting point is 01:37:51 jeremy jogger he keeps getting him down on the mat and he keeps kicking out where's he playing next year clad knows third team like i i don't know it's unbelievable no i think he's finally retiring i'll believe we'll see i'll believe you when i see he sells tickets for his own team it's crazy yeah like at the door literally enjoyed the game yeah and then he like he does it with his shit on and skate guards and then he walks down um ah i mean the the solution here sure seems to be brad enjoy the rest of your playing career winning as many games as possible in the sun with the florida panthers i don't i badly do not want that i would like him to fuck off finally should pummel the bruins for making that trade like i want the leafs next
Starting point is 01:38:41 year to have attitude this is the one thing that i think they've lacked enormously is they had zero attitude until a little bit last year i need attitude i need this team to fucking kick your ass the leaf should kick the bruins ass for trading brad marsh and within division are you out of your mind start dropping pamphlets at his house that like the whole atlantic division is actually infested with cockroaches ah get out of here bed bugs bed bugs they traded them to the fucking panthers but really i'm never gonna forget them but oh my god just somewhere away away from here i just don't 100 know if the payday that he's looking for is out there so you just get as much as possible out of the best situation possible and that's the panthers that's what
Starting point is 01:39:24 i would do if i was him jess what would you do what would be the max you would go if you were leafs gm july 1st and he's available for marshall yeah like six million well i ain't getting it done yeah that's why that's why i don't think it gets done because i don't think it'd be like maybe they think seven is reasonable for marshall but like i'm not of the mind that you should be paying him that much i think somebody will but i don't think it fits the leafs the it's a very it's very much a copycat league like imagine a couple years ago we're talking about like oh yeah when marshall's 37 he's going to get a four-year deal cory perry is going to be actively a 40 year old man and he's going to ask for a two-year deal like all right there's there's a lot of recency bias happening
Starting point is 01:40:08 here both of them are nails they were uh okay two defensemen eric carlson and rasmus anderson's names are both out there uh it's pretty clear that rasmus anderson and the flames are are it's not it's not acrimonious it's just done to right-handed goal scoring injury prone suites and eric carlson who the penguins are apparently willing to retain on uh i'm not saying for toronto i'm saying where do you see a fit for those oh absolutely not toronto i mean i mean we could use scoring defense but i'm not gonna lie well if you can if you can find a way to do like a some sort of carlo goes out the door and anderson replaces him oh i'm all the way on board for that that'd be great um i don't think that's available and i don't think that's going
Starting point is 01:40:58 to happen carlson is fascinating it's fascinating to me that he wants to go to a contender you got to have engaged carlson it can't be i'm i don't give a shit not showing up for camp carlson well As Dubas said, his habits need to match his goals. That's a fucking damning statement, dude. It's a crazy quote. That's crazy. Now, boy, are you going to hate this. Give it to me.
Starting point is 01:41:22 Is Jesse going to hate it? Pierre Lebrun. Jesse might hate it, too. Pierre Lebrun was talking about the perfect cap hit for Carlson could be like seven and a half. The Florida Panthers are about to have an Aaron Ekblad-sized hole on the right side now you would probably rather just fill that hole with aaron ekblad but if that's not available to you and you can find a way to get the penguins to retain as much
Starting point is 01:41:54 as possible you simply do not believe in first round picks that's just not a part of your religion you don't believe in it um not since anton lundell you picked him and you're like that's enough of that uh well carlson like he can't play as much as he used to that's great we have seth jones we'll play him half an hour a night he loves that shit it's kind of interesting well who's a contender who needs even who's the who's a contending team that even needs a second line right-handed defenseman second pair i think if somebody's acquiring eric carlson i think there's a possibility they get duped into believing that he can still be eric carlson like how the penguins were you know it feels like another chance for a team to go like oh eric carlson's
Starting point is 01:42:44 gonna be the thing that pushes us over the hump and we need this big point getting defenseman and i don't know if there's a team out there that fits where he can like thrive like and they would need to retain a lot i think right this guy's 35 36 years old like i'm just i'm going to do that but i'm going through like the contending teams and like who their power play quarterbacks are even like i'm like oh carolina carolina's interesting that can make some oh shane goss despair who's just much much much cheaper eric carlson yeah okay you know you know it's sort of interesting but i still don't see a path forward is dallas like their right side is abysmal could you basically give your right side to pittsburgh and make carlson happen i just
Starting point is 01:43:29 i don't see how everyone's wants and needs get met here like columbus nope you have zach friggin warensky like you're not doing that and i'm only i'm only choosing from contending teams because apparently that's what he wants yeah and carlson at what six million dollars if they fully retained i think again or what no he said 10 with the penguins you could get them as low as five right but can you retain fully again i don't know yeah okay so you could get them for as low as five sure yes but it would like ripple the in that area if it's five six like seven it makes a lot of sense but if it's like eight million dollars i don't see anybody wanting that and also like what eric carlson are you getting the blue like like i'm i'm really strong iru's names out there
Starting point is 01:44:20 by the way just Kyra Jordan Kyra why I don't know but it's out there okay I uh man at some point you got to look at the calendar special player hall of famer Rasmus Anderson though insane oh well Anderson to me is an easier conversation I am a little worried about the way he ended his season okay but he was he was injured yeah like it's not a hip thing he was playing on a broken leg yeah i'd be more concerned about ligament damage sure and like a knee and stuff like that broken leg two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of

Starting point is 01:46:02 do that first i'm i i'm happy but i i find the kevin adams thing more interesting we could do the hockey all okay so we got the hall of fame class in yes sir and the only one i want to talk about is alexander mcgillney he's finally in now jennifer botterill is also in there's some other great names are there but let's talk about why it's a big deal that mcgillney is in because he was for years and years it was at 19 years or something some crazy i was just about to look like when did he retire alex it was a long a very long time ago steve does it matter how many years it doesn't matter yeah kiss my ass he's 56 years old yeah he his last hockey was the uh was Sidney Crosby's first year in the NHL okay 0506 he's been retired since 2006 he's getting into the
Starting point is 01:46:50 hall of fame yes 19 years after his two years before his retirement he won the lady bing um it was the year before that 13th for the bing voting what's with the a whole bunch of lady bing votings for mckinley he didn't get a lot of penalties i don't think right yeah yeah um just this is one of the a hall of fame career that's been disrespected for two decades and it's it's a shame that it took so long but thank goodness it it he's now in i don't know what vendetta those people who rotate through and vote for the hall of fame uh each and every year had against this man but he's had a hall of fame career for since the moment he retired and i'm so happy that he's in here like are the players who are eligible for the hall of fame today worse is that why he got in
Starting point is 01:47:38 no no it's the bar doesn't move on your numbers when you retire because your numbers are done yes you can't add to your totals so if he was a hall of famer yesterday and he wasn't a hall of famer in 2009 it would have been his eligibility 2008 uh like nine yeah i would love to ask one of these people in the secret cabal like they do like they elect the pope so weird why did you do this now well and it's a rotating cabal too so eddie old chuck is now a member of the voting committee and so is jerome mcginley um those are the two new guys this year like the name i keep bringing up very hesitantly because this is a beloved player and he should be and we were robbed of a huge chunk of his career as paul korea yes 989 points in 989 games it's easy to remember
Starting point is 01:48:32 um i'm sorry mcgillney's got a better resume oh you mean the thousand points yeah in 990 games so almost i one more game one more regular season game he has 130 or sorry 100 he has 1032 points he has a 76 goal season he has a stanley cup which unfortunately korea never got to now you give korea you know gold medals i i suppose but like okay we're doing international play like what about mcgillney's story defecting from russia what about this guy the key right he was an animal yes he was an actual animal at the world juniors which is part of your international resume in seven games in what year was this 1988 he had 18 points at the world juniors and then 12 the next year in also seven games
Starting point is 01:49:29 he has a lady bing which i believe is his only individual hardware that is also the only individual hardware that paul korea has if i'm not mistaken there's no justification for this player only getting into the hall of fame today and paul korea is not even the only name i'm just using him for here john's another one here john's another one where i'm like the the russian thing is important because the hockey hall of fame i don't think it should just strictly be about numbers i think there is an element of this person is important to the story of hockey that's a reason why it's not the nhl hall of fame based on goal numbers that's not what it is you know it's about your entire tenure in the game of hockey and are you worthy of being immortalized
Starting point is 01:50:16 forever for the people who want to walk by in the halls in toronto and look at the story of the game and nobody within hockey would disagree with that except for the 18 people who vote every year until this moment so and what kills me too jesse is that when mcgillney how he left the soviet union's important guys like fatisov came over and part of the deal was you had to pay 50 of your salary to the soviet government if they let you come over and fatisov did that uh he's still i think ahead of their he's the head of the russian sport federation well he was a good soldier for them yeah and he's been rewarded mcgillney snuck away and told them to fuck themselves yep and that was dangerous right like that they threatened his family and and like and basically was like
Starting point is 01:51:03 you know he came in was unbelievable uh captain of the sabers and you look at the guys he goes in with right just on the nhl side cup of the devils chara thornton keith all from the same era mcgillney is squarely the era before maybe even two eras before way way but his first season was 89 90 it's not even thornton wasn't drafted until 97 i think char was 96 or 97 that's my point right heath was in the 2000s yeah this is my thing like this is a it's weird and i remember there was an there was articles uh for and against this in the in the athletic but the the i i think it was james that wrote it and he wrote it like five years ago he's like why is mcgillney not in the thing was is like well maybe he was a bad leader or something like that was the biggest
Starting point is 01:51:51 criticism that matter and again yeah well exactly like dude there's some people in that hall of Babe, it's not the Hockey Hall of Good Guys. It's not the Hockey Hall of Good Guys. I don't know that he was a bad guy. From everything I've heard, he was a great guy. It's funny. I'm looking at all his point totals, too. I'm like, oh, I'm surprised they're not a little higher.
Starting point is 01:52:07 Oh, he missed, like, double-digit games almost every year of his career. And he still put up the numbers that he did. And then in the playoffs, he also put up the numbers that he did and won a championship. And what are we doing here, guys? Yep. What are we doing here? Yep.
Starting point is 01:52:22 No, but he's in. He's in. And now people have turned their attention to being mad that Carey Price is not. Well, Carey Price, like, give it a year. Like, oh, wait, sorry, we missed one. So here's a player who should probably be in the Hall of Fame. But first ballot, I think, is insane. Last year, Shea Weber going in ahead of Alex McGilney.
Starting point is 01:52:44 Yeah. What are we doing? No. Carey Price, the outrage is that he's not first ballot. I'm like, okay, that's fine that he's not first ballot. He can be second or third. I feel like that's okay that he's not first. 19th ballot though?
Starting point is 01:52:57 19th. Then we're sitting here having that same conversation. That's crazy. But like Carey Price, he got bumped down because he's not first ballot this time. That's okay. Well, it's also weird because he's retired, but he's not. His contract's still on the books. Totally retired.
Starting point is 01:53:12 But like that didn't matter for Shea Weber. It didn't matter for Shea Weber. Which I think if you're not letting Yager in, why can we let in the guys who are still being paid? Is Yager not in the hall? No, he can't. Oh my God. steve you know this i don't know sorry i forgot a hole in your brain i know for that brief moment but like jogger can't be elected to the hockey hall of fame until he officially retired right
Starting point is 01:53:34 no he's still playing international hockey that's the stat i never let go of the only players with 600 or more goals who are not in the hall of fame are active yes yes which and jogger is technically active we should have some sort of rule if you are currently being paid by an nhl team maybe we shouldn't put you in the hockey hall of fame because your contract is on the books like if we're not allowing Jager for the same weird international rules I think there can be
Starting point is 01:54:03 a rule like that too he might play into his 60s honestly he's not that never get in cool and that makes sense yeah like yeah I Duncan Keith makes a ton of sense who else was there Chara Chara obviously makes a lot of Chara
Starting point is 01:54:19 who they couldn't get a hold of oh no that was thornton oh it's thornton no i but char too oh maybe it was all i think yeah they woke mcgillney up at like three in the morning and he went back to bed yes which you should do yes it's quite late yes which is like i mean it's just the most russian way to it does he live in russia now you just go thank you i think so wow i don't know that's a good question good for him um joe thornton is one where people are like uh first ballot really man he's such an all-timer i know he never ended up winning but uh the international accolades which again count it's not the nhl hall of fame um he's top 20 all-time in the nhl in scoring um he's
Starting point is 01:55:03 surprisingly up there in playoff scoring as well he's up there in games played he won a heart trophy how many league mvps are not in the hockey hall of fame yeah it's not a long list now first ballot hall oh damn it's taylor hall gonna get into the hockey hall of fame no probably not cory perry i think will oh yeah that's his first ballot yeah but like he's a guy who you might consider like a not the greatest heart trophy winner it's difficult because for a long time it was like gretzky and lemieux and i don't think there was really anyone else um uh thornton's numbers stack up it's the lack of championships hurts yeah but we're gonna get into like we're get into we're already in an era where a lot of guys who get into the hall haven't won
Starting point is 01:55:55 there was a year where it was none of them it was uh both sedins and luongo hadn't won Luongo has won as an executive now, but he got in as a player, right? So the Carey Price conversation is fascinating. Thornton is in. Everyone stop being completely ridiculous. Duncan Keith's in.
Starting point is 01:56:15 Brianna Decker and Jennifer Botterill as well. By the way, McGill and I just did a quick little thing. He is the president of Amur Amur Khabarovsk. Amur Khabarovsk, and he's been the president of that team for 10 years in Russia. That is where
Starting point is 01:56:31 oh i'm more i'm more it is uh i want to say it's the eastern most russian team that's where he so yeah it is closer to japan than moscow yes it's it is far he is also a triple uh gold what do they call that category triple gold person because he has a world championship a gold medal and a stanley cup like wow like and how many members of that club who are retired with a thousand plus points are not in the Hockey Hall of Fame. And he's ten short of a thousand games. Like guys
Starting point is 01:57:06 numbers are there people. No it was completely ridiculous that he wasn't in the Hall of Fame. But he's there now. Yes. He's there now. We can stop having the argument. I think you can move on to other people. Complain about it when it's a thing. It's not a thing anymore. Do we want to do Kevin Adams today or do we want to do it tomorrow?
Starting point is 01:57:21 We can do Kevin Adams today. Okay let's do it. Pretty quick. So members of the front office staff usually talk around this time. If you have your favorite team, your GM's probably speaking this week. So Kevin Adams. Brad Treliving's speaking tomorrow, right? You're going to that. Yeah. Brad Treliving's speaking tomorrow.
Starting point is 01:57:38 Kevin Adams spoke yesterday. He was asked about JJ Paterka and possibly moving JJ Paterka by the members of the media there in Buffalo. He gave an answer that was long-winded about how the draft's coming up this week and we're always trying to improve our team and that's fun stuff. And then
Starting point is 01:57:53 somebody very smartly in the audience said so uh that wasn't a no and here is uh the beginning of that question where someone's like so that isn't a no and then kevin adams's follow-up where he says that he feels bad for the fans of buffalo that they have to uh follow this team through all that that's not no that's gotta be my parenting i don't want to say yes or no because i just don't think it's it's the right time you know and i can probably after the draft get you know and when we have other conversations get into more specifics on things but i just don't think it's fair to the player to be honest with you to really even respond to that i think it's just better to to keep it to the the fact that
Starting point is 01:58:39 we have a plan we're working towards helping our our team get better we're willing to do whatever it takes to get better and i don't know like i get a i get memos on my desk every morning from pr of things and i feel if i'm being honest like i feel bad for our fans the stuff that's out there there's so much misinformation so much of it's nonsense i mean some someone that has no idea what they're talking about reporting that we were gonna buy sammy out we've never had that conversation once like it's ridiculous so keep going man i don't even think it's worth me really getting into it but um no i guess i just leave it at that if there's a way for kevin adams to do his job without talking they gotta do that yo that's why he feels bad for the fans that's why you feel
Starting point is 01:59:26 bad for the fans he's the misinformation from the reporters is why you feel bad for sabers fans the the this quote he's the worst status job in the entire league he's 32 of 32 of ranking gms this quote the palm trees thing he's doing i know what he's doing here he's doing his damnedest to be like come on guys it's us against the world right and sabers fan time and time again go no no there's no us no fuck you it's us we're alone here and you're fucking things up yeah we're alone we don't like you win there's one way to get it you're not gonna talk your way into them liking you yeah you just gotta win that's it the most interesting thing about this i think is he dispelled the matthias samuelson rumors so there's rumors this week last week that they were gonna buy out
Starting point is 02:00:19 samuelson and he's like no those are crazy rumors but the rumor he's asked about he refuses to dispel so in front of the microphone you're willing to do one for one rumor but the other one maybe the rumor they're talking about is true he kind of dispel it he confirms it because he's But it's almost like he's going, Kate, so that one's true, but let me give you an example of one that isn't. Yeah. Like, oh, so I'm pretty sure after hearing that,
Starting point is 02:00:49 Paterka's getting traded. Also, you feel bad for the fans as a result of things that are your fault. The reason there's all these rumors around the fucking Sabres is because you're not good at your job and all these rumors are coming up because of the guys you want to move.
Starting point is 02:01:04 Here's Sabres fans walking out of their seventh consecutive 7-1 loss. fucking media like no like oh man i wish i didn't read that my harrington's fault when i when i read that rumor and our team was down three nothing i was so full of hope and now it's the end of the game oh and it's eight two and uh i discovered that rumor was bullshit that is what i am most upset about i feel bad for our fans every day they wake up and they gotta read this nonsense that's my fault the percent of fans that you actually get on board with that were never leaving in the first place like anyone who's buying that who's a fucking right kevin
Starting point is 02:01:45 adams yeah they have a sabers license plate like they're good yeah you're you got them the way to get everyone else is all you got to do is win and who was the last goalie who was the last goalie to make a save for the sabers in the playoffs in the playoffs oh my goodness ryan miller jesse Ryan Miller is a good guess. Jonas Enroth. Oh, gosh. Shit. Really?
Starting point is 02:02:09 What was he doing in there? Someone must have got hurt. I think they were losing the game. Well, it was the last goalie to make a save. They lost the game. So like, yeah, we got to add it to the bag of Kevin Adams isms. Palm trees feel bad for fans. I wonder what's next.
Starting point is 02:02:26 He's trying his ass off. I'm glad that somebody from the organization finally feels bad for the fans for any reason. like they certainly weren't going to give you reason for that earlier he's just he's he's just sitting in a used car lot smacking the roof going let me tell you about the buffalo sabers and he's trying to talk you into it being a ferrari and it's just not let me just say this all he's got to say there is i'm not going to answer questions on that he yeah and then he like you're taking swipes at the media over a matthias samuelson contract you signed yeah you signed that kevin well he's already it was a weird deal when you signed it he's lost them permanently so he's
Starting point is 02:03:02 trying to get the fans on his side and it's not working and your your non-denial of the trade means you're trying to trade him yeah we all know you're trying to trade jj paterna that one's not that one's real but let me let me give you an example one the you know the one you didn't ask about yeah i'll deny that one yeah here's one that actually might make sense and we're definitely not doing it yeah also like why not like why not do that rumor took off is because people were like yeah okay that makes sense yeah no fuck that why would we do that we're like oh yeah the buyout looks kind of reasonable maybe the sabers will do that much like your first name i'm adding a why why kevin why let's wrap it there let's wrap it there kevin adams everybody bad
Starting point is 02:03:46 uh i just feel bad for the fans that they gotta listen to this dribble you know you know that's Terry Pagula's hand-picked man right there. That's their number one, the number one thing facing Sabres fans right now is people telling fibs on Twitter. And that's it. The Steve Dangle Podcast. Follow the guys on Twitter at Steve underscore Dangle, at Adam W-Y-L-D-E, and at Jesse Blake.
