The Steve Dangle Podcast, with your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wilde, and Jesse Blake.
Let's go!
I'm sorry, what score was it?
I think it was 4-1.
Hey, and I want to do a little shout-out to our Dangle Picks winners here.
NatPatR89
24 points yesterday.
Hold on. Nat?
Adam's wife?
No. Adam!
Did you rig this so that
your family could
win a Mitch Marner jersey?
Is this rigged?
No, I don't think I did.
Adam looked at his phone.
He went to DanglePix.com and he
pressed steal the jersey.
He sent DanglePix
to steal.
I really didn't do that.
And she knows all the loopholes because she's a lawyer.
It's all coming together.
I bet she read the contest rules.
She's the one person who read them.
Could this person's name not just be Nathan Patrick?
It sounds like Natalie.
That would be she.
He came up with that awful quick, didn't he?
The cover story.
He came up with that real quick, didn't he?
Just go to danglepicks.com.
You get yourself a Leafs, sorry, a Mitch Marner signed jersey
like nat pat r 89 natalie wilde randy randy g and bams you guys came second and third uh $250
skip the dishes card and $100 skip the dishes card congratulations to you i came 751st how did
you guys do one set 1059th and jesse who did his picks live on the show finished what a hundredth
what a jerk i agreed with the with the majority of your body you didn't agree enough oh by the
way the scores reset every game so every game you're in this danglepix.com when you sign up
mitch martin jersey every single game it's signed and i do want to say people i think there are
people that are like well i'm used to pools and you build points over the thing no there's no
building points every game's a new game it's zero zero i'm sorry i didn't know you were making the
rules i think adam has the highest finish amongst stuff amongst us all time like amongst the four
games how was the highest you finished 64th in game two i had 20th 25th 20th in either game two
or three actually yeah oh okay never mind never mind eat shit out of them steve gets the trophy
that's really good yeah it's like really good didn't win though yeah i think that might have
been game two there's over you finished 1060 something like i had to be close to last or
something like that which is wild because i bet the leafs on almost everything no you were because
you had 10 points so and you were 1059 there's quite a few i don't know how many total entrants
there are but like you're yeah you're close to the box yeah i got i got murdered i got
kicked in the face step it up uh so did the lightning so uh i want to say a quick i want
tell you a quick story actually uh so i'm driving on the 407 and i i'm i i'm in my big stupid truck
is that the one you got to pay for that's the one you got to pay for yeah but it was rush hour and
i was like you know what i'll pay the 10 bucks i don't care no it's because you have that some of
us don't and he was on the phone on a conference call with tom hanks and beyonce that's right
that's right no i'm in the truck buy that island buy it do it uh another world war ii movie let's
go um so i i uh uh i'm driving on the 407 and a car pulls alongside me and usually when that
happens sometimes when you're in a big stupid truck people don't like you because you're in
a big stupid truck i like that you call it a big stupid it is it's a big stupid truck it's stupid
but it actually when you consider that i have you know three pets a kid and my wife and i it does
sort of make sense after a bit you know what i mean but it is big and stupid and i get and i
respect that uh but i figured i'm like oh no like there's nobody on this road i could not have cut
this person off at because i never cut anybody off on purpose maybe you didn't see them because
you're a big stupid truck so that's instantly where my mind went and i so i like i'm like
bopping away i'm listening to this uh an artist that i really like rory gallagher i'm just
drop but and then and then he speeds up and then and i slowed down and he's in like a champagne
lexus i'm like oh this guy is like kurt from oakville and he's gonna ream me for daring to
to cut him off oh you're gonna get break checked uh that's what i thought uh and i didn't look over
kept not looking over and then all and i see you're doing this waving yeah like as if i can't
see the but i see waving out the corner of my eye and i finally like fuck i'm gonna look and i look
over and it's two guys about our age definitely not kirks from oakville that's for sure and they're
like they're like roll it down roll it down so i rolled down my window and they're like go leaves
go so they i don't know who you are i don't know where you went after that but you and the champagne
colored lexus thank you so much you made my day that was so great uh they know it was you i i
think they just looked at because you could your trucks like you can see yourself over your window
the windows are big your windows down they saw the world's biggest head in the world's biggest
truck yeah yeah like that guy's compensating for something yeah oh wait a second i know that
douchebag oh my god so big shout out to them that was uh that was lots of fun to see on the on the
highways and again nobody was on them so it was nice uh before we get into this yeah the exclusive
private highway something you should know rich because he's rich uh i just feel like dancing
throughout the show there's a good day it's all i wanted oh did you notice how bright the sun was
oh yeah this morning oh so before we get into this there is something you should know the leafs
now according to sportsnet the leafs were 1 and 17 when leading a series since 2013
drew livingston checked that out and he said actually it's 1 and 10 so when they're leading
a series they won one game to go up you know two games and the only series they did that in
since 2013 is Montreal.
So that's the one.
The rest of the time
when they've won a game
or when they've had the series lead,
they've lost.
Another two.
That's right.
So now it's two and 10.
So one thing I do want to say
is the next time another fan base
criticizes you as a Leaf fan
and says you're overreacting,
that's gaslighting.
Don't let them do it.
It's gaslighting.
It's bullshit.
You're thinking about it
with your I cheer for a normal team thoughts.
Right.
And you don't.
You don't.
Um, now the first period for the Toronto Maple Leafs last night was a biohazard.
It was, it was, I would say for the first seven minutes until the first penalty was
called, nothing happened.
Grappling match.
Not much.
Grappling match that you could tell the Lightning were winning.
IMO.
Okay.
IMO.
I thought it was pretty even.
It was even.
I like that.
Now, Yarncroak gets hit from behind.
Sorelli is the one that throws the hit at 1325.
And then, you know, the Leafs go on a power play.
Go, hey!
So even if it's tilted the island, or the island, it's the lightning's way.
Well, now we got a penalty.
We can take advantage.
But Morgan Riley has the puck bounce over a stick.
Brandon Hagel uses his speed.
And Morgan Riley trips him.
It leads to a penalty shot, which Sammy stands tall on.
Leafs still on the power play.
It doesn't amount to anything.
No, it was pretty poo.
And that is a growing concern for Leaf fans, is a bit of a pooey power play.
Well, get in a minute, guys.
Nylander then, it's so weird in this series.
Like a couple of the plays that I think Lightning's fans would see as the dirtiest, which is the
Point Riley thing, which got a lot of play.
Of course.
And then the Nylander-Sergachev thing from last night, where Nylander got a trip.
And it looked almost like a bit of a slew foot.
You remember that?
Wasn't the Stamkos?
Oh, sorry, Stamkos.
Excuse me.
I don't know why I said Sergachev.
Another member of the top line.
I don't know what to call it other than just really stupid.
Yeah, that was a stupid penalty.
Offensive zone.
Yeah.
No reason for it.
None.
What are you doing?
I don't know if I'm jumping ahead, but he paid the price for that,
William Nylander.
He sure did.
If you looked at his time on ice by the end of regulation,
it was down near 12 minutes.
Yes.
And he played a couple minutes in OT.
and deservedly so.
He was bad.
The second way, the way that David Camp specializes in,
the best two-way player in the league,
William Neylander doesn't play that second way.
There's no defense, and it hasn't been there this entire series,
and Sheldon Keefe finally said,
okay, I'm going to try and do something to just make you smarten up here.
See, you're skipping ahead because the second goal.
Well, my thing was 20 seconds in, Kucharoptika Lorne.
That?
20 seconds into that power play,
And as you keep saying, we have yet to see a bad Tampa power play.
Dude, that play is terrifying.
It's terrifying.
Hedman has it.
That's awful.
That's awful.
And then he gives it to Kucherov.
That's awful.
That's fucking awful.
And then he chooses not to shoot it.
Oh, that's good.
Oh, wait, no.
He passes it into the slot.
That's fucking awful.
Right.
And that's because Sammy was out at the top of his crease.
In fact, even a little bit further than perhaps maybe you would want him to be.
He battled.
I don't blame him.
I don't blame him either.
it's kucherov 20 000 people thought kucherov might shoot it yeah perfectly executed and also
calorn hadn't scored in 29 playoff games yeah get lost um so get lost then as the leafs love to do
and did a couple of times you get within the last two minutes of the of the period and you go if
they could just hold tight for this they go into the locker room with uh oh shit the lightning just
scored uh and that's literally what happened two minutes to go i'm i'm even preparing a tweet i'm
like writing a tweet if they could well it's one nothing throw the period in the trash whatever
but uh lightning goal number two comes in like with a minute 33 to go kucherov set up to sergachev
uh and again the interesting part about the sergachev thing is that does he not lose his
stick be a complete non-factor in the play oh yeah he lost his stick and i didn't realize this
watching it the first time he lost his stick because he broke it over kerfoot that's right
he cross-checked them yeah and then he goes to the bench does plays nothing like does nothing
to the play doesn't even get the puck scores and i identified it as a problem like tampa's left side
is their strength on d if willie is not on the point like shit on velcro they're gonna take
advantage and they're gonna take that shot and they're gonna make plays every time it's willie
again he had a tough first period he had a real tough first period and sergachev who like the
lion-heartedness of the tampa bay lightning like i thought he was done i thought he was done when
he blocked that shot took it right off his knee gets right back up fucking scores the goal and
that look on his face i'm like jesus christ i don't know how they how they get these guys out
yeah on that on that play like he has no uh semblance of like protect the weak side of the
ice you know where the puck isn't slow to react protect that area and find a man and make sure
that it doesn't get over there for a free shot, you know,
and it's disappointing to see.
He wants to pick off passes in the middle
and start the play up the ice,
and the reason he wants to do that is it fucking works.
Like, he's seen it work, but Mitch is there quicker.
He just reacts to those plays quicker,
and even if he can't pick it off
or even touch the puck or anything,
he's forcing Tampa to make imperfect plays.
It's the very subtle difference between the two.
um tampa's expected goals in the first period was 97 percent holy shit what does that mean
it means that they probably should have scored more
probably that the leafs got away lucky in the first period um now steve you did tweet at the
end of the first you're like man maybe bunching in this lineup for game five wouldn't be the
worst thing you were tweeting it well are we gonna have that conversation later or now later
But I just thought that's how bad the first was, and we thought that's how bad it would get.
And boy, were we wrong.
And I was thinking about it from the perspective of like, all right, even if they win, they look awful.
Right?
We'll have that conversation a little later.
We will.
Second period, good start from the Matthews line.
Mitch had a good setup for Austin.
Like, right away, solid fourth line shift in the second minute.
They cycled hard.
The Leafs came into the period being outshot 13 to 5.
Three minutes in, it was 13-9.
Hooray.
That's a really good start.
The shot attempts were so much worse.
Matthews takes a shift with, sorry, Nylander shifted up with Matthews and Yardcroak.
Sheldon was obviously having to play with the lines here.
And here's the thing.
They actually got a goal out of it.
Justin Hall shoots.
They actually are starting to shoot from the point.
We saw it with Morgan Riley.
We've seen it with Justin Hall.
Hall shoots.
Achari tips.
It's a goal.
but i think what we should talk about on that goal is ryan o'reilly with four lightning around him
behind the net he still comes out with the puck he willed that play to happen no one has elevated
their game more than him no one on this team has elevated their game more than him like what a
warrior what an absolute warrior what a perfect acquisition remember when we thought their big
move was mckay blafferty and that would be it where would they be well where would they be
I don't think in this series and the Ryan O'Reilly move came first it did it did but we thought we
were we were suspecting it was going to be McCabe Lafferty no we were like what are what are they
going to do uh are they going to get remember the conversation was I wonder how they could afford
Taves uh McCabe McCabe was always factored into the plans but it's like all right who else did
they get off Chicago is it going to be Taves maybe they're in the Patty Kane sweepstakes and I'm like
guys it's going to be mccabe and lafferty and that ended up being the case after o'reilly achari
oh my god a lot of people have had uh problems with justin hall's plus minus because i know
he's been on the ice for like nine goals against or something 11 i think is it 11 now really bad
yeah but i thought he's played well i thought a lot of that is he plays a lot of the penalty kill
like he is the penalty kill specialist on on defense a lot of the time and and that's that's
going to cause you to be on the ice for a lot of goals against when tampa's penalty uh power play
is so good and i don't i haven't had a problem with justin hall's game like i don't think there's
a move to put in lilligren right now i think there is uh i think the problem is that lilligren
doesn't play shorthanded i think that's the only thing that's well not not as trusted as justin
hall no and and i to be honest my opinion is that geo hall got caved last night until the third no
Until the third.
I think they had a bad night, man.
Yeah, I don't think there was enough to warrant taking them out of the lineup.
That's where I'm saying no to.
I think the point you're trying to make is, yeah, they were bad.
Add it to the list.
Right.
Okay.
I don't think you're upgrading by putting Lilligren in there.
I think you're taking away some assets that Justin Hall brings.
Well, at least you're taking away a coach that trusts the player.
And give John Cooper credit because he made it feel like Hall and Giordano
played every second shift.
Like, he made it feel like they played way too much,
and I think it's just he attacks them.
Yeah.
The line matching is spectacular by John Cooper.
He does a fantastic job with that stuff.
Win or lose the series, I tell you what,
that's a top five coach in the NHL any day.
Matthew Nyes then goes on to save a goal.
right at the goal line right off the line oh now this is a guy matthew nyes is interesting because
well he can't come out of the lineup i think that i don't even know if we can have that discussion i
don't think that's it that is is off the board um that was the discussion for last episode now
he's cemented himself here's the thing about young players though young players usually the
criticism about them when they've been high scoring in junior or college is what they can't
Play defense.
What's Matthew Niasse do?
Fucking surprisingly awesome defense.
Responsible.
Responsible.
I thought his offensive game was kind of what's been lacking.
His defense has been fantastic.
Well, and the thing, I feel like he's just itching for a goal.
It's right there.
It just hasn't happened yet.
But he's not forcing it.
No, he's not.
He's not.
Some areas.
And he's adjusting and that sort of thing.
He hasn't been perfect.
I also know he's perfect.
battle these he's our perfect boy uh the stick lift stuff like he's hitting what is it b on the
controller see you know what's funny i don't even know what button it is because i never push it
because it's the penalty button yeah is it x i don't know i think it's x i think it is yeah
anyways he hits that a lot mike stevens what is it you fuck um he's gotten way better
it's the poke check one isn't it no it's the stick lift oh it's stick lift that's an
auto penalty okay uh by the way also right after that they sports that had this like
hilarious graphic where uh they're like and matthew knives doesn't like amelie arena
and then they have a quote from him and it's like uh because he played there in the frozen
40s like it kind of stinks actually he hates it i mean he lost the biggest game of his college
hockey career i'd hate it too the beginning of his life yeah yeah so far so far yeah until the
next few yeah until uh thursday thursday yeah um so then we get a victor headman penalty and
what's interesting about the playoffs is you can punch a guy in the back of the head once
you can do it twice you can do it three times but on the 10th time normally they're gonna call it
and what was great about headman is how angry he got about it uh because he knew he's like what
what did i do i only hit him in the back of the head 10 times so i i don't have a problem with
the lightning mouthing off they mouth off all the time but when keith does it and bunting does it
and the leafs do it they're whiny pants shitting babies and when the lightning do it which is
fucking always they're just a savvy team of well that's because they want something though if the
leafs had won something we might be talking about it differently right but you're taking history
into account and everything and i suppose that matters but in a vacuum they do the exact same
shit these guys are yapping after everything sergachev having the balls in overtime i know
we're skipping ahead don't don't even don't even remember when john cooper pooped his pants after
nazim qadri uh scored that ot winning goal last year yes vaguely the uh when uh colorado had seven
guys yeah it was too many men on the ice and he made the moment all about him and then the rest
messing up the call
and then that was
all people were talking about
when we should have been
talking about Nazem Khadri's
miraculous healing
and then coming back
and scoring the OT goal.
But that's why
John Cooper's great.
But you can heap in that
either way
and be like,
oh, he's a great coach.
Look him do that
or he's a whiny ass baby.
But maybe that's part of it.
That is part of it.
Why is being,
haven't you,
listen,
I've had a baby
when he whines,
he gets what he needs.
Bottle,
sleep,
change the diaper.
The squeaky wheel
gets the grease.
the whiny baby gets the bottle and he's been i mean he's drank out of a out of a couple shiny
bottles yeah over the last few years yes a teat yeah teat the stanley teat
it's just a guy named stan yeah
nope we're not gonna we're not gonna do it so so again so here's the thing though so the
Leafs are on the power play and then Kalorin strips
Riley, misses on the breakaway
and
here's the thing again with the
Tampa penalty kills. They are all over the Leafs
power play. It's full court press all the time
and it makes it hard for the Leafs who are used
to standing still and getting set up to get
set up. That top unit is having
a hell of a time gaining the zone.
They're really hard.
Even when they do gain the zone though, they cannot
stand still. This isn't Tuesday night
against Arizona.
This is Monday night
against Tampa in the playoffs,
you have to move.
Move your feet.
What did you say about Willie in the video?
Move your feet!
Good things happen when you move your feet.
So Mitch Marner,
who's got all the talent
and all the ability to do it,
Matthews, Nylander,
those guys who are setting up to play,
Morgan Riley as well,
you can't stand to look.
You've got to be moving and looking
because they're not going to stop.
And they're pushing the Leafs' power play away.
It should be one of Toronto's weapons,
and it just hasn't been in the way
you would have hoped thus far in this game.
Crazy aggressive.
Crazy.
Crazy aggressive.
On the 3-1 Lightning goal, Hedman, of course, comes out of the box,
shoots Stamko's tips, fucking goal.
Off his leg.
He didn't even know where it was.
It was a very Lightning Stanley Cup goal.
You know what I mean?
It was just like, that's a playoff team.
Okay.
When I saw that go in, I'm like, yeah, I don't think they're winning this game.
It wasn't the 4-1 goal.
I'm like, okay, and they're getting bounces.
What do you think of the micro slow-mo videos of Stamko's moving his foot slightly
so that the puck was directed?
stop it stop stop he did that on purpose yeah well you know what if he did yeah no nobody could
have caught it but twitter so if if it passes the refs and the situation room and the coaches
and most of the players and the fans in the arena you gotta give it to him it's allowed
distinct kicking motion like listen i don't know what it means either but i know it's not that
Now, at this point, William Nylander is having a really bad game and isn't playing much.
And the screenshot I'm about to show you comes from producer Drew's Twitter, who loves to
be a troll.
And this is William Nylander.
This is a microcosm of his game.
Matthews is open and with his stick up.
And Nylander, I believe in that play, does a back pass.
No, no, he shoots it.
Oh, he shots.
So he's got three guys in front of him and Matthews is wide open.
I lost it.
Did you guys yell at your team?
Oh, yeah.
I guess I missed it.
I wish we could play the video, but Matthews is just waving the stick in the air
for like 10 seconds, and Willie shoots it.
Didn't see him.
Oh, Willie, bud.
I think he looked him off.
Some days you just don't have it.
He did not have it.
Willie, from a certain crowd, which is getting smaller,
but he's just never going to get the credit he deserves.
He's been such a – for a team that has really struggled in the playoffs
the last few years, he's been such a good playoff performer.
He's been amazing.
He is struggling.
He is struggling.
Well, outside of a few plays, like the one where he held it for a long time
and that was in the comeback.
Or was that the one they lost horribly?
But there was a really nice play.
He's made a couple of nice goals.
He's made a few really nice plays.
But outside of those, yeah.
There's a few guys on the team where you look at their numbers at the end of the day
and you're like, oh, they're doing fucking great.
No, no, no.
It doesn't tell the full story.
You had to watch the thing.
he i mean if you look at his raw numbers uh hey oh he drew a penalty and he got an assist on the
ot winner he had a fucking great game no the fuck he did not but he got benched and played 12 minutes
in regulation time did they win they won they did now uh cologne as i said at the beginning of the
the sorry in the first period part of this segment you get to that two minute mark and you're like
Come on, guys.
Just lock it down.
Two more minutes to go.
Don't let in a goal before you go to the dressing room.
That would make it.
Sad.
And also 4-1.
Thank you.
He's never going to give me what I want.
Never going to give me what I want.
Dude, I went to bet a three.
And Kalorn shoots it from the blue line, basically.
It goes off the post and in.
Sammy doesn't see it.
Doesn't see it.
Hagel did a great job on that shift.
using his speed to back haul up,
using his speed to drag haul into a screen,
and Sammy doesn't see a molecule of that.
That was one hell of a shot.
Oh, yeah.
That was a crazy shot.
No goals in 29 games, two goals tonight.
That was fucking...
You see the indent on the post from the fucking puck.
He nailed it.
Killorn was like their best player.
Yes, he was.
He's unreal game.
Oh, yeah.
Had a great game.
He was fantastic.
He should have had five goals.
McCabe, so the Leafs are on the, there's a four-on-four
because TJ Brody existed and took a punch to the head.
Let's talk about, who punched him again?
It was, was it Kucherov?
I believe it was.
I don't remember who it was.
Are you in the third?
Sergeyev.
No, no, this was end of the second.
End of the second.
With about 45 seconds to go, Sergeyev punches Brody in the head.
But John Cooper very smartly throws up the four.
And the refs are like, well, they both must be involved,
so we're sending them off.
So TJ Brody, who has had his moments in this series
with penalties that you don't want to take,
gets a penalty for taking a punch to the head,
which is different from the Tavares penalty where he didn't.
Sorry, the Hedman penalty where Tavares didn't take a penalty for that.
I am not so arrogant that I think the Leafs watch my videos,
but when Sheldon Keefe yelled, that's made up at the ref,
I was like, you know what?
Maybe.
yeah maybe just maybe uh the Leafs my line Sheldon then McCabe gets a penalty right at the end of the
third period it's four on four two minutes free cross check he was baited into and he has got to
you got to be better than that when you're down he's had a difficult time adjusting to playoff
hockey yeah he's he's been it's funny he's been good a lot of the a lot of the Leafs who have
struggled in this series are at least battling and they're doing their best at what they can
control so he's been getting caved in a little bit i'm just gonna throw my body in front of shots
i'm gonna try to throw hits when i know it's not gonna be putting me out of position i'm just gonna
i'm gonna do my fucking best but he's been doing a little bit of a little bit too much surviving
and not enough thriving.
And then he takes that penalty.
And, I mean, Tampa scores on that power play.
It's over.
The game's over.
Well, the Leafs had to go into the third
with Brody and McCabe in the box,
down 4-3 on a, like a 4-on-3 power play.
Now, at the end of the second period.
But thank God they have.
Well, hold on.
We're not going into the third yet.
Justin Hall.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
All right.
Yeah.
It's weird.
Justin Hall defense here.
So, obviously, the Ozone entries are an issue.
offensive zone pressure is an issue uh why the light why the lightning pk is eating the leafs
power play alive is an issue um you're you're letting two goals in within two minutes at the
end of each period uh it's the kind of shit that makes it hard to take to the dressing room but
the leafs can take a couple things away and i think sheldon said it after the after the game
in the press conference about the second period he said we played better we just did not get a
great result sort of what john cooper said after game three they outshot tampa 14 to 7
In the second period?
Yeah.
That's mind-blowing to me.
That's mind-blowing to me.
Tom LeCision said that Justin Holl shouldn't take another shift in the series.
Have you noticed how little I tweet during games?
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Well, listen.
I don't blame you.
Yeah.
Emotions are high.
One thing I want to say during the thing is that I have both streams on, and when I have
sports then on, I want to hear what the analysts are going to say.
Elliott Friedman said, listen, you don't have to win this game,
but you have to get the core four going.
You got to get them going.
They've been smothered the last two games, to quote him.
See, that's what an analyst says.
What did you say?
There's a dude who runs off of feelings.
And I said what I said heading into the third period of game one.
Because I'm trying to get people to stay and watch.
Right?
They're down 4-1.
They're getting killed.
I'm not looking forward to streaming the third period.
It's going to be a long, drawn-out death.
That's what it was in game one.
But what I said heading into that period,
and I ended up misleading people, unfortunately,
was stay tuned because you're either going to get
a magical Disney comeback,
or at very least you'll see some rough stuff.
Some big hits, some fights.
Game one had none of that shit.
None of it.
Game two, when Tampa was in the same position, rough stuff.
Knowing how to lose is almost a skill.
Well, in the playoffs it is because you're playing them the next night.
You're going to lose, right, sometimes.
So, again, I said, folks, I know what I said last time.
You're either going to see some rough stuff or a magical comeback.
That's my throw to you, Adam.
Can you do the Brandon Hagel thing before you go back to Hedlum?
This is what I was waiting for.
You ever see that clip of the ice cream taste tester?
That top note.
That cream.
No?
Oh, it was delicious.
Brandon Hagel said at intermission he wasn't surprised to have the Leafs up for,
or sorry to have the lightning up for one because he thought they should have had that result last
time he's not surprised i said you're not that guy you're not that guy pal trust me i know you're
not nate diaz don't give me that i'm not surprised motherfuckers shit brandon cutting another promo
Go on, Brandon.
That was the tone.
Although, if you're the lightning, that's the attitude you want your players to have.
What do you want them to say?
Yeah.
There's a difference between confidence and mission accomplished.
And the tone to me was mission accomplished.
You thought he was Tom Cruise and Top Gun.
And you're not that guy, pal.
Trust me.
Absolutely.
So, third period.
Leafs start shorthanded, but they kill it off.
Almost immediately, Tavares and TJ Brody out of the box now.
Get a couple shots in tight.
Almost score.
And it's sort of the energy that the Leafs needed from the jump.
But then things start to even out and nothing really happens.
But then.
Then what happens, Adam?
But then.
Then what happens?
You're thinking, okay, like we at least need the core four.
Please, somebody get something going.
And Austin Matthews gets his second goal of the playoffs.
Shout out to Sheldon Keefe, who, you know, it's funny.
He used the blender to such effectiveness down the stretch.
And the playoffs start and he's like, nah, I don't like this toy anymore.
And he just stopped using it.
He stopped going to it, except for like very special situations.
Third period, he gets out Nylander with Marner and Matthews.
And why not?
You got to get the core four going.
mitch is the fixer anytime anyone's cold give him a little bit of dr mitch that's that's what
sheldon that's a good point sheldon always does it and he's right like i think we all agree
matthews is the superstar goal scorer you know top center on the team mitch is the fixer
there was an unreal play in the neutral zone i think it was morgan riley great spin backhand
pass the sort of pass you're probably not going to see it most times during the game but when
you're down three goals why not fill your boots I think it was Mitch first or no was it Willie
first then to Mitch yes then to Austin streaking with speed rips it the sort of opportunity you
can't buy in the Stanley Cup playoffs it hasn't been there Matthews has had it maybe once maybe
twice in this series and they're not all gonna go in too that's why those chances are so precious
and that's why you need to generate them you give matthews five of those he's scoring one
that is my guarantee he hasn't had enough to guarantee and that's a big player coming up in
a big moment and i tell you what the chat on the streams was all over him really all over him
because dude galorn headman point they're all guys who elevate their game come playoff time
Tampa was dog shit for two and a half months dog shit and we all just sort of went yeah but
they're Tampa but they're Tampa and we know we're seeing them at like 70 percent maybe
and they elevate and when they hit that 105 110 percent range there's barely anybody in the league
who can even hold a candle to them matthews elevated his game in the final 10 games of the
season one of the best players in the league during that stretch you need more you need even
more than that and three minutes later they got it he turned into a ghost the best goal scorers
turn into a ghost they make you forget they exist and and i'm thrilled the greatest of all time at
that is brett hall oh yeah he was a skate but he could shoot like a he was he was the best at
finding the open spot in the offensive zone and everybody all the defensemen all the forwards
forgetting that he existed and feeding him a pass and he just snipe it all be very very quiet
yeah my stick in the air yeah it's crazy he was like ov right it's like you know he's there i
don't know why you're ignoring him and austin has that exact same thing yeah it's really special
So, three minutes later.
You know those standing benches you can just sit down on?
Like, we got to give Ovi one of those.
Like, there's no reason to make him stand, like, on the power.
Just let him sit.
Let him rest.
Get up when there's a pass and just bomb it.
Adam?
Can I talk about the next thing?
Am I allowed to?
Go ahead.
Well, I'm thrilled that the Lightning, I don't know if they traded for us or signed Ian Cole.
But I'm thrilled that he's playing in this series.
As a Leaf fan, I couldn't be more thrilled that Ian Cole is a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
I think Ian Cole is just, I think he's a third pair NHL defenseman.
And the Lightning didn't used to have those.
Right, right.
Like, I'm trying to think of their six from last year.
Their left side was Hedman, McDonough, Sergeyev.
What kind of goofy bullshit is that?
What is that?
and cernak i think noted alan walsh client yan ruda yeah and was it bogosian
bogosian or was it cal foot might have been both they would have flipped in i think i think it was
zach i think it was bogo so that's like so they only had one third pair of defensemen there are
some teams that have six luke shen you know yeah yeah a little bit well listen ian cole
takes down nola chari it's a penalty and it's an obvious penalty it's not like you know when you
look at at that one it's it's um it's just it's just weird that they would do that well actually
it was him what told the story to me camera goes right to john cooper didn't say shit
if he's speechless when his team takes a penalty in the third period
yeah they did that shit and in my notes i say the leafs must score here and who scores
austin fucking matthews baby austin fucking matthews just does a little loop of the net
and it's funny i called this right from game one this posting up in front of vasilevsky it's not
really it's not quite working lalonde derrick lalonde who we'll get to a little later talked
about vasilevsky's difficulty tracking pucks but the lightning play in a way and he's so big well
you can bring it up now they lalonde because we can't play because it's from sportsnet right uh
but lalonde basically says that they did a study and vasilevsky's puck tracking isn't is one of his
from the point from the point yeah and uh you know i think analytically speaking you'd be happy to
take on a goalie whose one weakness is shots from the point those are low percentage shots
you probably look at that and go we can fix that with systems we can fix that with clearing
rebounds and strong defense which they have yeah and he's big as shit so like he'll stop a bunch
of pucks by accident and we just got to clear the rebound right but posting up and getting into
those stationary battles with the lightning it's been difficult to come by goals they've gotten
a handful but they've been difficult to come by the execution for matthews to just do a casual
public skate loop and tip that thing mid-flight that's an elite player doing elite shit at an
elite moment and everyone was screaming for this guy to elevate his game two goals in three minutes
i think you had the uh the penalties wrong because the penalty it was bagosian zach bagosian
hooking on Alex Kerfoot.
Okay, there was something with Ian Cole, though.
I know that.
That's the only penalty in the third period
is Bogosian hooking on Kerfoot.
Maybe you're thinking, because Ian Cole was...
Oh, yeah, how could Ian Cole have taken the penalty?
He was on the ice for the second Matthews goal.
Maybe that's what you're thinking of.
Well, that might have been it.
Whatever it was, it was dead to rights.
Whatever I need to say is that Ian Cole is trash.
Turnip trees.
He's back.
He's fine.
No, he's not.
He's had a bad series.
Yeah, so I think that – so kind of going forward there,
Austin Matthews scores, and now we've got a game.
And it's funny, right before that, like the commercial break before that,
Steve's on the stream, and he's talking about –
you took a question from Austin Matthews about – or about Austin Matthews.
Can you imagine?
What should I do next, Steve?
Should he be scoring more?
And you were saying that you needed more from his teammates
to help him get into the position to score.
and find them find it that's an elite well in the willie freeze frame it's like perfect example
and they found they they got them going like that's what that's what everybody's been asking
for and like austin matthew's showing up those are probably the two biggest goals of his career
yeah those two leading that comeback i don't i can't name anything bigger than that maybe last
year the winner in game five but it didn't lead to anything unfortunately no you know we'll see
if this one does this leads to the 4-1 comeback this leads to potentially closing it out on
Thursday I don't know let's see what happens there but those are two biggest goals of his
career so far Willie with a bit of redemption there as well that's his second assist uh really
really good play and very William Nylander you're starting to see him come back uh also uh three
assists what the fuck late in the period and this is the third period Matthew Nice takes a shift
with William Nylander and Austin Matthews.
Really good activations off the boards.
Right in there around the net.
Getting things going.
And we've got four minutes left to go.
Morgan Riley scores.
In a bananas play.
Because Keefe pulled out the blender again
and he said, you know what?
Not in every situation,
but I think in this one,
we're going to do O'Reilly, Tavares, Marner.
We have a left side faceoff.
Let's put out John Tavares and Ryan O'Reilly.
I caught myself.
Oh, close.
Close.
Yeah, it'll get you.
Now, I actually missed this goal because Sportsnet now and you skipped at the same time.
Oh, gosh.
Yeah, it was like, ah!
It was crazy.
All I saw was, all I saw was, scores!
And you're like, ah!
And I'm like, okay, we scored.
So, I actually, I got to take you a little behind the scenes there.
yeah it was a bit of a rough night for that well my stream was having technical difficulties
in the third period and they didn't tell me in the oh in the room they didn't tell me
that's the right move yeah don't tell me just keep going don't take me out of my zone and i
check my phone because my phone is how i get uh the questions cherry picked from the chat because
i can't i mean it's going can't read the whole thing my wife texts me she's like oh no the stream
is sticking there's a problem i go darling light of my life don't tell me that shut up i love you
i'll talk to you after the game yeah i can't i can't and while we were fixing the um
well actually i'm skipping a little ahead but we decided to put up a slate that said technical
difficulties instead of showing a feature between the third period and overtime and they were trying
to fix the issue and the whole time i'm just sitting there rocking back and forth like like
a caged animal right because all i can think about is the game all i can think about is the
game if i think about how the thing's not working i'm gonna get very upset because i thought i
It was, I thought, if I may quote the youths, bars.
I thought I had bars on the tying goal, and I don't even know if it was recorded.
Did anyone see it?
I haven't seen it.
I haven't watched it back.
With the tying goal?
Yeah.
Like what I said.
I've seen the tying goal.
I have no idea.
And what's weird is my feed was fine.
So I had no idea there was an issue.
It is what it is.
Shit happens to the internet.
We can go back and check afterwards.
Yeah.
We'll see.
I wouldn't worry about it too much.
Who cares?
Did you see
Back to the things on the ice
Why did William Nylander take that face off
On the left side
I didn't get that either
So who was out there
Was it Nyes, Matthews, Willie
Yeah because Matthews took it on the other side
Once the play went down the ice
There was an icing and they just regrouped
I noticed they did that with Yarncroke too
Do they not trust Matthews on that side of the ice
What they've always done
Dating back to the Babcock days
Is they have
um a right-handed shot with him to take the face off they don't do that with marner but um they're
comfortable doing it with willie when austin and willie were on the same line they always did it
and uh now that yarn croaks out there they have him do it because he's uh apt enough at uh face
off so my assumption is matthews was kicked out of the face off no he wasn't oh he wasn't no
then i have no willie willie lined up there and he took the face off it must have been some sort
of set play they were trying to pull off yeah i just i think when you doubt a goal in the third
period of a playoff game trust us and matthews take a face off on either side yeah we've reached
that point but they but they they got out of it but he loves that stuff he loves fucking messing
with everything trying to play these little games throwing whoever on these lines and it works maybe
whoever he was i should shut up maybe who he was taken on in the face off they're like he doesn't
do good against righties it's like a pitcher thing or maybe every now and then an nhl coach is like
fuck with them that's like he does that all the time with these lines and these little changes and
i'm gonna shut up because they just keep winning i yeah i'll have patience for it as long as it
works yeah um now i want to uh jesse i sent this to you the maple leafs posted this on their twitter
account uh what maple leaf square looked like when morgan riley tied it up just have a look
oh that poor girl gets rocked
the girl in the red tube yeah that was an explosion absolutely shit rocked
so here we gotta watch watch it again you want the girl get i want i so keep an eye on the girl
she's got the go leaves go sign with the red too okay all right all right so watch her watch watch
her here we go here we go oh no dude i have been in that position when you don't expect
you don't expect the mosh pit to break out oh no oh god i didn't notice but she comes back
yeah she goes right back she's a warrior we lose her for a little bit where's she coming
so that's what everyone was paying attention to if you go back to the beginning
yeah i noticed something else so okay buddy standing right next to her next to the dude
in the leafs jersey so he's blue jeans back black coat yes okay he's got his arms folded but in one
of the in the arm that's tucked he's holding a cup of timmy's oh he's holding a cup of timmy's
yeah watch he doesn't spill
a drop
oh you're right
how does he keep
there's nothing in the cup look
oh whatever drew sweater
is just there's nothing
barreling through the world
and like he punches
the cup directly
someone's is that a carlton the
bear stuffy or
what is that okay we don't need to overanalyze this video it's a carlton the bear uh turnover
chain i need it is it actually my life yeah does that exist giant ass carlton bear i need that
leo's favorite thing in the world is carlton bear um i have a carlton the bear shirt that i wear
when i need him to behave so then we go to overtime then we go to overtime and i want to
You know, going in over time, everybody's nervous.
Everybody's feel like, because here's the thing.
As a Leaf fan, you enjoyed that comeback,
but you also know what it's like to be a Leaf fan.
And this could still easily go Tampa's way,
and then the comeback didn't matter.
Do you remember that really super cool comeback
that Toronto had against Columbus in 2020?
In the bubble, yeah.
Yeah, it was crazy.
And they won that game, but then they lost the series.
And I was sad about it.
Yeah, they had the worst game five ever.
So no one talks about it because it's not worth revisiting.
It sucks because you know the outcome, right?
Now, so I'm in this one.
I'm going in.
So I'm like, please, please, at least in this period, come out strong.
That was the last time, by the way, they had come back from three goals down in playoff history.
Can you name the other two times?
The Leafs?
Yeah, they've done it four times in their history.
No, I can't.
They've come back from three goals down in a playoff game.
One was last night.
One was Columbus.
And then there was two more times.
There's the same team.
One was a 5-4 OT win.
The other was a 4-3 OT win.
In the Stanley Cup Final.
Oh, God.
So the Cup Final won, I don't know.
Detroit, was it against Detroit?
Oh, there you go.
Wow!
Because I feel like at least one of their ones in the 60s was against Detroit.
Also, there's only five teams.
There it is.
Label those.
Yeah, you should put emojis over the buttons.
Yeah, I haven't gotten there yet.
Calm down.
What's he been doing?
The other one was Detroit 1936.
36!
1936, April 9th, 1936.
In the Stanley Cup final, the Leafs came back from three goals down to win 4-3 in overtime.
The other time was 1993 versus the Detroit Red Wings.
came back uh from a in they won in overtime 5-4 that was the north division semi-final is that
the borchevsky goal it uh it was the borchevsky series sorry norris division semi-finals yeah
and detroit was a really good team that year they thought they were going to win the cup leaf should
not have won that series yeah no but they did uh shut up shut up they won they won uh so we go into
we go into overtime and you're just begging that they that they come out flying and the leafs did
and that's what leads directly to something you never see although we did see it twice
uh once in two different games yesterday uh we saw a penalty in overtime in vegas vegas winnipeg
and we saw a penalty in overtime toronto and tampa and what the guy that's been the one that
in everybody's doghouse all game long william neilander is the one that draws it but why
why was he able to do that move those feet and i mean you have to call that you you they're only
gonna call a penalty in overtime if you force them like it's egregious it's egregious like um
you know they don't want to call a penalty because they don't want to have an impact on the game
that's one of those ones that's so severe you have an undoubted impact on the game by not calling it
William Nylander's got the game on a stick there
if he without Sergeyev
he gets that shot off that might have been
game right there he's got
an imminent scoring chance and he's
taken down at the legs by
a defender you have to call that every time
every single time if it happened
if the Leafs did it you'd have to call it
you have to call it every time it's
dead to rights and it's huge because it's
Sergeyev yeah and it's
Sergeyev and that's crazy
now there were some crazy chances
on this power play i think it was their best power play before the goal since game two like
they had no i like since they left toronto they've not really had a great power play it's funny i
feel like their best power plays are the ones that don't get to the second unit yeah yeah and uh well
i meant game two game two oh right yeah but willie sets up this goal he draws the penalty he sets up
the goal curve foot give and go with giordano yeah and and here's the thing if i were to told
you that Sheldon Keefe was going to go with Nyes, Yarncroke, Kerfoot, Hall, and Geo, and
that is the line that scores the goal in overtime, you would have been like, I can't believe
he's putting that line out there in overtime that's a fireable offense.
Noted net front presence, Alex Kerfoot.
You're going to apologize?
You're going to apologize?
He was great.
That was a great goal.
For calling me useless for 82 games?
I don't think that's what I said.
I believe you said he was useless.
You said useless-ass Kerfoot.
Wow.
Okay, I am not Jake B. Leafs.
Who I think may have actually said that.
But, listen, I do have to apologize.
There you go.
Because at the trade deadline, I talked about...
I mean, we were talking about hypotheticals.
And we talked about if the Leafs were to lose in the first round.
you can't put any blame on Dubas because he did this he did that he did that he did that and he
pulled out all the stops well not quite all of them because they still had that void on the left
wing now remember we hadn't seen a second of Matthew Nyes in the NHL it's a complete mystery
box we have no idea we don't know Bunting is getting suspended and Kerfoot was still
semi-regularly playing top six minutes and i wanted to stick up for kyle but i'm like that's
inexcusable that's indefensible was the worst thing in the world in your mind uh i was upset
about it yeah yeah and kerfoot scores the biggest goal for the leafs in these playoffs
maybe and i mean they've scored so many fucking unbelievable goals uh two overtime winners in
the same series when was the last time they had two ot winners in the same series i'm very happy
that that wasn't the move at the trade deadline to dump kerfoot and try and get some more salaries
well it wasn't even about dumping him it was about push him down the lineup which i thought
would have been the move and they couldn't even do that and they just choose to keep them and they
love them for a reason uh and it wasn't just the tip an amazing tip if you go and look as soon as
geo flexes that he's about to shoot kerfoot like just very subtly just takes this little bunny hop
right into vasilevsky's line of vision and he's he's doing the meerkat all game he's doing the
meerkat poking up out of his little hole and i think if this shot gets through there's a chance
it would have gone in anyway yep yep he didn't see this thing and it's because of kerfoot
perfect screen no defenders on him at all and he gets the beauty tip beauty tip off the bar too
and that fucking thing
it hits the bar and like skirts
the line for a few inches too
and you're like you rotten bastard
get in that friggin net
and it did
and my head still hurts and by the way
quick correction on this yarn croak was not on the ice
it was nice curve foot Willie I believe
that's what it was
well Willie was on the ice
he set it up so it doesn't matter
nice is out there too
I want to send there's a couple of
people that have just the the enormous passion um so jesse i want to first off i want to play
what what happened when maple leaf square when the puck went in we'll see if the tim hortons cup and

of five seconds on the ice by the way was willie kerfoot geo nice yarn croak oh it was yarn croak
okay there you go and then this is the uh madness at maple leaf square when uh all right red hat

little network uh can't can't say nice things enough nice things about them so here's here's
the little video they sent us hey shout out to steve dangle that one's for you baby
shout out to you man shout out to you that's amazing shout out you guys yeah that's doing it
that's really cool
it's
you know those
the ones after
the Knicks games
where Bing Bong
went famous
yeah yeah yeah
they're just as good
as all that shit
Bing Bong
Bing Bong
they're gonna have
some moment
that's
if the Leafs keep winning
this
the fan first
now we're gonna have
some moment
that's just as good
as Bing Bong
and they find
the most rabbit
yeah
you guys are great
at the stuff you do
especially on TikTok
and they have
this enormous dude
who just flags
people down oh is that what they do well you didn't i can't no you weren't there no it was uh
the avalanche game there's some dude who's like like if jesse ate jesse like he's just he's just
he's like a bouncer but he's like they're uh um he's like associate producer or something like
that who's like hey you want to be a camera and you're like yes yeah yes i would love to do that
sir the abominable fucking snowman jesus christ give me a sec um i'm gonna run you through some
stats marner two points matthews two goals o'reilly one point kneelander three points
riley one goal and that is just from the start of the third straight through overtime that's so
fucked before the third period only one of those players had a point and that's o'reilly with
another assist of course the big stars for the leafs marner matthews o'reilly kneelander and
riley got it done and the great thing is is that's not all the big stars on the leafs you know john
tavares did get a hat trick earlier this year or this this series right remember remember remember
uh a couple other things is uh like a couple things i thought a guy who's been a factor this
entire series for the leafs uh or against sorry against the leafs is cory perry and i don't
remember seeing him last night the fourth line for the lighting was not nearly as effective
and i wonder if uh like that's the fuck up line it's to fuck you up right um are you doing a bunch
of good things are you getting things done well we're gonna send those guys out there to fuck you
up right and uh the lightning didn't need them right they didn't need them to disrupt
now where they could have maybe been a little bit more useful is while the leafs were coming back
uh i mean there are six minutes between 4-1 and 4-4 yeah but maybe you decide that's not the line
i want to put out there in defensive situations you know who's been there's only one player on
tampa i think who's been noticeably bad patty maroon and like i'm not picking on the guy
the amount of he's the only lightning player turning the puck over in the offensive zone
regularly um and they send them send them in there and he's good at doing certain things for sure and
i don't want him down low with the puck and i don't want him in front of the net with the puck
but in these past two games where the leafs have really gotten outplayed and really gotten their
asses kicked by the lightning they're taking the puck off him with ease with ease if if you
i don't know how cooper combats that because you got colton paul you know which is just such a bad
time like do you do you know belmar perry i mean you have to use maroon somehow yeah yeah you do
he's he's been noticeably bad in these past two games when the lightning have been dominant uh
Lightning Insider, Eric Erlinson, basically he said,
since defeating Dallas in overtime of Game 4 of the 2020 Stanley Cup Final,
the Bolts have a 1-8 overtime record in the playoffs.
The losses came Dallas Game 5, Florida Game 2, Carolina Game 2,
Islanders Game 6, Montreal Game 4, Colorado Game 1,
Colorado Game 4, and Toronto now Game 3 and 4.
I think their one win was New York Buster.
So I guess they're 1-9 now.
I guess they'd be 1-9 in overtime since the Stanley Cup.
It's not great.
How do you pull that off?
Three straight cup finals?
I know.
How do you pull that off?
What I thought was interesting is they could cite a stat that is that many overtimes,
and it's only been three years.
Like for the Leafs, if that was—
That's true.
Well, the Leafs overtimes, it's been like—
You'd have to spread that over 25 years for the Leafs.
Yeah, I'm trying to—
Sergachev's like coming up on 100 playoff games.
He's 24.
I know.
Like they—
This team has played a lot of hockey.
it's wild a lot of hockey crazy um just 24 yeah fuck off uh riley suggested after the game that
uh tampa's game changed as soon as they got up in the game steve doesn't believe you i don't
believe you i was gonna look it up adam's looking it up right now he's determined he's 20 he's 20
He went to school with Matthew Nights
He's 24
He's fucking 24
96 playoff games
Damn
I can't believe it
I actually can't believe it
As proof of me not trusting Adam Lothar
How the fuck is he 24?
Because he was drafted a while ago man
And he was traded a while ago
Like he was traded when he was like 19
Oh I thought you'd think he's older
Yeah I did
I thought he was older
Yeah, I'm shocked he's still so young.
It feels like we've had Sergeyev forever.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And I'm shocked he's still only 24.
Yeah.
The Russian Sam Gagne.
He's younger than all the stars in the league.
He's also been playing since almost the beginning, right?
Yeah.
As soon as he got traded for Drouin, he was playing.
And he played four games for Montreal ever.
But the 17-18 season, which is the first time the Leafs made the playoffs
in the Matthews era.
16-17.
Okay, 16-17.
So he played his first full season after that.
He had 40 points in 79 games his first year.
It feels like he's a 10-year veteran.
Yeah, well, he plays like it.
He's amazing.
We don't put nearly enough stock into playoff numbers
when we talk about a player's career.
Yeah, I agree with that.
Look at Ryan O'Reilly.
There's somebody who doubles his output in points
just because it's the playoffs.
Well, later in his career,
he'll come up on a thousand regular season games and you'll be like oh here's circuit
says thousandth game no it extraordinarily isn't because by then he'll be flirting with like 200
playoff games right right um so uh morgan riley suggested that tampa's game changed as soon as
they got up four to one and it seemed to allow the leafs to come back because they opened up
because and and then john cooper followed that up with what's that cliche you play not to lose
Dude, they're struggling to play with the lead, man.
The Lightning are struggling to play with the lead.
Sheldon Keefe said, team feels different.
Does it feel different to you guys?
You understand why I'm hesitant to say yes.
Oh, the head coach is saying it.
Do you feel it or do you not feel it?
From right now.
They are getting moments and they are showing poise
in those big moments that they have not gotten in the past uh the leafs of the past and maybe even
like a few weeks ago play better first and second periods than this team probably but
the third period they just work they just do the right things until the right things happen for
them and they do those until they get a break and then all of a sudden that break leads to
momentum and then all of a sudden you've taken over the game that's what happened last night
right it wasn't just waiting on a handful of flukes they took it they took it from the
lightning you know you're not just you can you can look at game three and go boy they got fucking
lucky they got six shots yeah in a game where they couldn't get anything going offensively the third
period was their first or sorry worst offensive period six to three were the shots so you're
seeing tampa do something there and you're seeing the leafs not be able to accomplish their goal
you're seeing the lightning crawl into a shell but you're also seeing it work because they held
their opponent to six shots you say vassy you have to stop six shots he'd tell you every day
he could do that every day every fucking day right and you could look at game three and go
that was one that got away from us that was unlucky game four i'm not sure that's what
happened they got out the leafs got outplayed no doubt but they took that moment and they built
to that moment they built to the first matthews goal they built to the second matthews goal they
built to the riley tying goal and they dominated the overtime and they built to that win
fucking a that just hasn't been there in the past it just hasn't been there
here it is feels good feels fucking great
so i think uh because after after game one i heard from a lot of people who were upset at me
because i called tampa washed and um after game one performance you know it didn't really look
that way but seeing how the rest of the series has played out i think it's clearly not the same
tampa team that went to three straight stanley cup finals because you have a leafs team that
seems to you know you got you got a lion on on your sleeve on your on your arm there steve like
what's that lion doing if he sees a wounded antelope he uh he well this one's a friendly
lion oh he's so he goes to a vegan you gotta leave steve who seems to have the determination
to take advantage of a wounded animal you know and it seems like tampa in the past wouldn't let
these games slip away and i think john cooper saying that hey we we kind of sat back and when
we gave up this game like that's that's not a thing that you'd expect out of this tampa roster
and whether it's they don't have the same horses that they've had over the last three years because
of all because of the nature of the salary cap whether it's the amount of games they've played
whether it's just a slip in your determination because you can only do this for so long the
personnel they've lost all the guys like all the things that go into it is a large factor in the
Leafs seizing an opportunity where hey we can get back into this game we're not done yet and they've
done it and like all kudos to the to Leafs and it's on both sides I think it's you have a Tampa
team that's not the same as it was last year and you have a Leafs team that's grown that's mature
that knows that hey we need to take advantage of this opportunity because we can come back here
and acquired the right guys and acquired the right guys like ryan o'reilly and and nola chari who
recognize these situations and come to the fight what percentage of leaf goals through the first
four games have achari and o'reilly gotten a goal or an assist on like what percent of the leafs
goals have come directly from that trade fucking kyle tuck your shit yeah unbelievable yeah it's
great unbelievable guys i want to ask you what's it going to take to win game five in toronto what
do they got to do i want a great game from sammy well yeah i think we could all just like sit back
and be real happy and play with our toys if sammy just like stood on his head well that'd be cool i
don't want him to have to that'd be cool it'd be cool just every once in a while i just want a
goaltender game don't even fucking worry about your offensive defense they haven't really gotten
it like i watched no that's not true game three we'll get to we'll get to dallas but like
jake ottinger won a whole game on his own there's no business they have i would i would like to see
one of those that's just that's pie in the sky that's well it's baked into the cake jesse that
if the series goes seven ottinger stealing at least two yeah like it's jake ottinger right
that's that's what he does if the jets are gonna have any chance against vegas hellebuck's gonna
have to stand on his skull and brain right um i don't know why i said that like a soprano's
henchmen but um they've got to control more of the game than they did in game three and game four
they've got to pretend this two day break does not exist they have got to
act like it's a continuation of game four and you have again to use the term a wounded animal
you have a lightning team that is dejected and does not have the momentum on their side and they
are not doing the right things mentally and they are not doing the right things physically and they
are getting outworked and buckling in the moment which is just something you can't count on them
always doing i do not want to see that fucking building again i do not want to go back there
for game six and i mean it can happen we saw it with the raptors in 2019 they lost game five with
the 3-1 series lead and we all said oh fuck they gotta go back to oracle if they lose that game in
oracle i don't even want to know what's going to happen in game seven they pulled it off in oracle
they won it they literally shut the building down it's the last game ever played there
have we already seen the last game in amelie arena god i hope so i hope so sheldon has to
have his best game of the series okay what does that mean what does that mean it means the lightning
can't control as much of the play as they have at home he's got to free up his big guys he's got
to play with the lines they certainly look freer at home the big guys of course you gotta you gotta
shelter the minutes
of the of your third
pair and geo and hall you got to put them
in a position to succeed
and move your fucking feet move your fucking
feet and
it's just a good thing to
do anyway I was about to say you might draw some
calls five
six and seven do not count
on that shit
especially yeah getting a getting calls going
your favor yeah especially getting
one in the third and overtime of that
game deserved calls
deserved calls
but they still keep score of this stuff
do not
count on the power play
existing
in game 5, 6, and 7
you can't, so you have to do better at
5 on 5
we talked about the power play being a potential
liability heading into the series, it's the only
reason they're still in it, right
you gotta be better at 5 on 5
yeah
I think they do it in 6
I think the moment might be a little too big on Thursday.
We'll see.
I'm rooting for them to win, obviously.
But I look at how Colorado had the opportunity up 3-1 last year versus Tampa.
And Tampa went into Denver and was like, we're not going home.
And then Colorado had to be like, okay, deep breaths, everybody.
Let's go back to Amway and take care of business.
And I think it plays out something similar like that.
I kind of wonder if the two-day break helps the Leafs.
because listen i've been nervous and everything and i've been wired and i just feel like that
doesn't last 48 hours like it's there's some point your brain goes all right like the danger's not
coming you know what i mean that's your fight or flight response goes maybe the big scary monster
isn't about to pounce out of the trees and and you know i can everything is fine the other thing
that i think works potentially in the leafs advantage sheldon keith talked about there
being several game time decisions in the lineup now that could be a coach being a silly goose
and a big liar that was weird i think he was telling the truth and i think my little theory
is i think a bug is going through the team they have been uncharacteristically shit
and they've been able to turn it on for brief sprints but they've been uncharacteristically
this is based on any information no it's based on conversations i've had and we're all just guessing
um i you know some of the post-game reports i was just looking at some of the faces and i'm like
you do not look like you've slept does bunting get in i think he has to and i think uh my buddy
nick laflame uh nakash ganguly um had the uh answer yarn croak matthews marner
uh nice tavaris nice tavaris kneelander thank you bunting o'reilly achari
okay and the fourth line aston reese camp kerfoot kerfoot so lafferty comes out
lafferty comes out it's haven't seen a lot from lafferty this series to be honest no and and you
get tunnel vision sometimes and i've been thinking okay if bunting's gonna get in and you want to
keep knives in that means aston reese has to come out no it doesn't and again damn there's another
benefit of having alexander kerfoot on your team is the dude plays all three forward positions
you could also regular season say you could have one of bunting or ass and reese on the right but
i don't think either of them have played the right this season regular season me would be like i want
him to earn it back by going through the fourth line and the third line but they just don't have
the time right and he is like listen we we could all be angry or disappointed with michael bunting
and what he did the reality is the guy's a 50 point player in 160 something games at the least
he has over 100 points uh he's 23 goal scorer this year that's no joke man and when he's at his best
he is a pest and that's the kind of guy that when you play with o'reilly and achari uh boy i hate to
split up the nice o'reilly achari line because that's been really really good i got a fun one
Bring some speed, though.
What if you swap Yarncroke and Bunting?
What if you give Bunting his top line spot back?
I think you're out of your fucking mind.
He hasn't learned to think.
I also think you're out of your fucking mind.
Yarncroke's also been good.
And Yarncroke's been good.
But I was thinking you're at home.
I was thinking you're at home.
You make a pure shutdown line of Yarncroke, O'Reilly, and Achari.
But a pure shutdown line I don't think works against Tampa
because it's not that simple.
Yeah.
what's and i don't want sheldon to get caught up in the matchup do not let tampa dictate the game
especially in the first dictation can't go anywhere no he's got to stay there the bunting's
got to go somewhere else if he comes back in but bunting i also think should come back in
i i think you should i think not your 13th best four i think we're in agreement that's the struggle
i think we're in agreement he should come back in and i think we're in agreement he should
come back into the bottom six yeah and like and you can play around you guys are parents you know
If your kid messes up and then they want their toy back,
you don't give them back right away, right?
No.
How do you discipline your kid if they want something back after screwing up?
You put on Blippi.
Bunting shouldn't get rewarded with the fucking top six.
Exactly.
Give him a bottom six.
20 minutes ago, Matthew Nyes, this is a quote,
Matthew Nyes is certainly not coming out of the lineup.
He's done a terrific job for us.
He's a guy that definitely has earned his spot
and the opportunity to continue to play for us.
That is from Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe.
There you go.
Yeah, so it's probably laugh.
I think it's laugh.
Laugh at your ass and erase if it's anybody.
Do you not like bunting on a fourth line roll?
Yes, I do.
I like the top three lines the way they are.
Why mess with them?
Why are we moving any of those guys for a guy that, frankly, needs to earn it?
Bunting doesn't have his head on straight because the moment's so big
and he needs to go out in there and fucking headhunt people.
So he should be on the fourth line.
I think we can agree that if the Leafs are going to go on a run here,
they need him.
Yes.
They need him.
And I think it's important.
He's an important enough part of this team that he needs to be a part of this
thing that they're trying to do, which is winning a fourth game in a series.
Also, this is such a good problem.
We're sitting here arguing about they have too many good forwards.
We need to fit Michael Bunting, who's probably a top 12 forward in every single, all 32 teams lineups.
This is a great problem.
Top line gets a D zone draw.
Yarncroke, Matthews, Marner.
Top line gets an O zone draw.
Why not try Bunting, Matthews, Marner?
No, but you can do it.
It's an option.
You can say Tavares, Willie, Matthews.
You can say anybody.
And just so you know, as of right now, according to Mark Masters, who talked to Sheldon Keefe this morning, Sheldon Keefe has not made a decision on Michael Bunting.
And I doubt we'll know until game time.
He's not telling a shit.
Don't show your hand.
Yeah.
Again, I go back to game four and five.
How have they done without Michael Bunting?
What have they done?
They've won three straight.
i go back to games four and five of the leafs hab series and the leafs win game four and they
take the 3-1 series lead and they had they're coming off a shutout and they take dermot out
to put sandin back in and sandin had a horrible game five and never got it back and the team never
got it back and i'm certainly not blaming it on sandin it was just part of the problem
now here we are same same situation similar i think it's different with a forward coming back
in especially like he's not a fringe forward right this is a key part of the team but to get
back to the previous conversation of hall and lilligren not a chance not a chance leave hall
in there yeah have them figure it out oh have them figure it out no don't fuck with it don't
Because Lilligren goes in there, has a bad game.
All of a sudden, you're going to Hull for game six,
and you're making the exact same mistake over again.
Thank you.
Leave it.
Leave it.
Leave it.
Don't touch it.
Don't touch it.
Don't even look at it.
I'm going to make Hull Army t-shirts.
I'm going to lead the Hull Army.
There will be you, Cam Chiron, and Kyle Dubas.
Kyle Dubas.
I think.
Ian Tulloch.
Well, Ian, of course.
I'm not surprised by Ian at all.
Hull, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
It's in a picture of his face, and he's all happy.
I love that.
Oh, yeah.
I love that.
Can we make a T-shirt?
I'd buy that.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
That's good.
It's great.
I'm sure it's the OT winner of the cup.
Let's talk to Dave about the odds coming up on Thursday night.
You can bet that with David Bastel.
Brought to you by Sports Interaction.
Get in the action and make a play.
19 plus.
Please play responsibly.
All right, so listen, Dave,
I know you want to talk about the Leafs and Lightning,
but we just want to say that we have been rooting for the Jets.
Rooting for the Jets.
Despite what Jesse Pollock does at Maple Leaf Square all the time,
trolling Leaf fans.
Every time I watch the Jets, it's just, it's heartbreaking.
We've been there before, and I'm sorry about game four, my friend.
Yeah, it sucks, man.
I just think, you know, based on injuries, based on, you know,
only being that goal or two away it's yeah you never know right anything can happen but
ah you kind of want it to split a little i know i know i know it was close okay so let's talk
about i hope you you'd understand that i'm rooting for my bets so i'm rooting for vegas
nothing wrong with that man i'm rooting for my friends you know what bets
that's why that's why you're the cool one
all right dave so toronto and tampa thursday i mean we just spent a lot of time talking about it
so cj predicted this exact scenario the least with a 3-1 lead and two days off so what are
the odds saying because toronto hasn't been good with the lead in the series before you know hey
you know what but it's a it's a different team right right now according to our odds makers
Toronto, heavy favorites to clinch this series.
For Game 5, it's a 1-6-3 for Tampa Bay, 2-3-2,
over-under of 6.5 goals as kind of the normal for this series
because we've got two high-profile offenses and so forth.
But I'll go one step further here.
To clinch the series, Toronto is a 1-0-6,
which basically tells me if I'm not paying attention to anything
and I look at the numbers and I go, numbers talk to me.
the odds makers are saying this is in the bag no
we were rooting for you no come on dare you
numbers are numbers are always going to be numbers guys i'm not counting anything else
and you know what different team different different leadership up front the additions
have been very good close it out now right knockout punch i want to see a good first period
by the way i was disappointed in that first oh it's bad because i'm i'm batting for them too
right it's bad i want to punch in the first yeah that's right that's right thank you right in the
teeth let's go yeah um dave neck right in the neck dave uh also we gotta we gotta shout out
danglepicks.com uh power by sports interaction give it away mitch marner jersey i bet so heavy
on the leafs and i was like i did great for sure i'm like a thousand great job steve and yeah yeah
you know get on that jersey right i mean we have we have a wardrobe full of mitch marner autographed
jerseys you should take one too yeah you the listener yes yeah you are you deserve one you
deserve one yeah i'm looking at the uh i want to see where i rank how do you how do you find
it where you ran it's on the leaderboard section oh gosh i got a little oh i'm 751 last game yeah
okay well you're in the top 755 you do jesse okay let me see let me see oh you're 100th oh my god
jesse oh no you did really well oh nice and i made my picks on the show do you remember we all
went through them yeah that was that game and i agreed with most of them how did i get killed
losers this sucks anyway listen uh there's there's prizes for the top three in every
single game. We got another one on
Thursday. And listen, here's what I'm hoping
for. Well, Steve and Jesse aren't paying
attention, Dave. What I'm hoping for
is we get to do this season
or we get to do this round
two. That's what I'm hoping for. I want the second round.
Baby, let's go. Let's do it.
Dave, thanks so much.
Guys, it's
playoff season. It sure is.
You don't want to trim your beard, but you do need to
trim down there. What
solution might you go
to um i don't i don't know electricity somehow
i think he wants you to electrocute his ball no i hope not i hope not no manscaped's got a much
easier solution which is the anti uh jeez oh my god uh it's got it's the lawnmower
it's the performance package 4.0 with the lawnmower 4.0 trimmer
and the LED light
and it's waterproof
so you don't electrocute them.
Oh, there we go.
Full circle.
There it is.
It's waterproof.
Holy moly.
Don't electrocute your balls.
Don't forget about
the Weed Whacker 2.0.
It's the ear and nose hair trimmer.
Now, I've had to do
my nose hairs for a while
but my ear hair,
that's new
and I'm now cutting my ear hair.
Oh, it's coming out.
Oh, really?
I know.
I don't have any gray hair
but I got ear hair
but now I don't.
I had boogers show up
in my videos a couple times
and now that I've been using
the trimmer no more boogers no bugs you trim the boogers the hairs that cling on to the boogers
for the hair is not no you don't blow your nose all right all right you're supposed to still blow
your nose 20 off and free shipping we can't promise booger free but almost uh use the promo
code dangle at manscape.com that's 20 off and free shipping with the code dangle d-a-n-g-l-e
at manscaped.com this year cheer on the boys with some clean boys so it's going to be a bit
of a wild schedule now because we've been doing you know these guys play this night these guys
play the next and now that's all about to change i'm going to run you through the schedule tonight
it's hurricanes islanders wild stars kings oilers we don't get panthers or bruins until wednesday
when we also get the Kraken and Avalanche,
who I want to start with right now.
So everybody, I guess, is getting that extra little day.
Producer Drew, like, do we have to?
Yeah, I know.
So obviously without Natushkin, it's difficult.
And Landeskog.
And Landeskog.
And probably Makar.
Well, so we'll get to the Makar thing.
Seattle opens the scoring, though,
with two more goals right in the first.
And this time there's no kiss-blowing.
No.
Right?
Dude, it's a whole team elevating.
Whole team elevating.
and you look at will borgen and daniel sprung big time playoff performer daniel sprung like
it's it's vegas all over again we look at the team and we're like who the fuck like where did
this come from they part of me wonders if the expansion draft is perfect for everyone picked
basically because i think sometimes players have a difficulty adapting to a third and fourth line
role there's a difference between being the seventh eighth ninth best forward on the team
and being a suitable third line player right players in the national hockey league the best
hockey league in the world are there because they played in canada the u.s russia czechia sweden
finland at the elite level and they were the best players on their teams right will borgen
yes jesse no uh will borgen um you know couldn't he barely got into the buffalo lineup buffalo
gets into a bigger role daniel sprung how many teams has that guy been cast away from
i don't know a million i don't even know gets into a bigger role right um ellie tolvanen
best player outside of the nhl they earnestly called him that for like a while comes the
nashville goes to seattle all of a sudden he's a destroyer of worlds now daniel sprung scored on a
power play that was caused by kale mccarr this is in the first period and it's sort of surprising
when you see it i have not seen this yet you haven't seen this hit yet no okay so to me so
jared mccann is out for next game already we already know that he will not play in the next
game and this was in the first period just he's got the screen shot up and that is a player not
expecting to be hit are you able to take it off the screen so i can oh yeah it's not on yeah
that is a pretty intense okay so it goes into the corner where's the puck yes the puck has
there's no bearing on it there is no pot that's that's why it's so egregious there is no car
the puck goes towards the glass it goes like to the netting that initial contact with mccann i
don't have a problem with yeah he shoves them and then he just hits them for no reason that's a bad
hit oh and his head hits the glass can't do and you see the way he falls right you know when a
hockey player falls and they're ready to get back up he falls with his arms out yeah they're not
even catching him oh no yeah that's a bad hit that's a bad hit and he will uh nhl player safety
said this morning he will have a hearing uh by the way the last two tweets nhl player safety
sent out were about the Leafs of course uh what the bunting suspension and the Lafferty fine that's
right of course um yeah that's a bad hit that's a bad hit and like okay Colorado's gonna be without
a star for game five so Seattle that's their best player it's your best forward highest scoring
forward I'm sorry producer Drew I mean I've seen some comparisons to other hits and I mean it
wasn't as bad that's it's bad though it's it's a bad hit it's a bad hit it's a cheap shot it's
steve you have to understand the puck is the other way yeah the puck's not even the other way
it's not even 20 feet close to the you're gonna have to you're gonna have to work pretty hard
to convince me that's much different than what bunting did with cernak those are two
ineligible players to be hit i think the difference is bunting was a direct head
yeah yeah and macar macar's his interference so bunting got three does macar get two does he get
a discount because i think he's i think he's getting one he's it he's getting he's getting
a game i think we're all in agreement he's gone for game five yes but he's getting a game that's
i'd be upset if it was only one i and i that's understandable but i for seattle but dude but
the line 40 goals the line they set with bunting was three and i was like that's a lot but then
they explained it and i was like three makes sense after we watched the um department of player safety
video that we all love uh high-staking history and this mccarr hit i think it's two by that
precedent of a guy who's nothing to do with the play he hits his head um the injury which we know
now they take into a factor which i didn't think they were what they do sometimes and they don't
other yes so when it's convenient they can just make judgments and say oh he's gonna be out for
a long time so we're going to add that on they include that in the video with bunting so i think
it's got to be two and if they do it to one then fucking i want you to remember something though
bunting never had a fine never had a suspension but bunting was due for a lifetime achievement
award that should be a factor but it is but we know that and kale mccarr is not due for that
not traditionally a dirty but if you're going by what it should be no prior history they are both
that same category and i'm with you 100 i just think it's going to be one game and there's going
to be people who are ticked about it so we know we know the similarities between this hit and the
bunting hit we know the differences i think we agree it's not as bad but still bad if it's any
other player i think it's money in the bank that it's two but it's kel mccarr i don't know what do
you guys think about the fact that they reviewed this and i think they called it a two minute
in the game yeah it was two minutes two minutes for interference it's an interference call
that leads to an injury i don't know how you call that back but do you think it should have been
five yeah and and i'll tell you another factor uh with the um suspensions and everything we look at
The big ones, the Leafs have gotten, or not even the big ones.
Clifford, we were like, geez, that's stiff.
And Bunting, geez, that's stiff.
And Kadri, geez, that's stiff.
Especially banning him from the whole playoff matchup.
That's still an unjustifiable suspension, by the way.
Yes, it is.
We're suspending him for an undisclosed amount of games.
What the fuck?
What?
You just can't have him.
For the rest of the series, however long the series lasts.
What the fuck?
are you a professional sports league or what what is that anyway um early in the series
and that matters right we're talking about guys who were suspended for game two and three and four
if we're ignoring the second cadre one which is a hilarious sentence right
this goes into five six and seven you suspend them one game it's perfectly understandable and
And I think we understand that, you know, you know, something that works against Makar
that Bunting did get dinged for Bunting got five and hurt the team and it cost them the
game.
You got five and the game Makar only got the minor.
It's like equivalent to like four games because he got the three and then a half.
Yeah.
If it's anyone not named Kel Makar, it's fucking two.
That's one.
It's one.
It's two.
I'm convinced.
So, so, but if he gets to, it's an elimination game.
Yeah.
Well, no.
Yes, it is.
Oh, like for somebody.
Oh, yeah.
For somebody.
You're right.
You're right.
You're right.
Yeah.
For someone.
Yeah.
Right?
I mean, likely Colorado.
Hey.
Watch out.
Watch out.
I agree.
I mean, they've played short all season, basically.
But now you're down Landeskog, Nechushkin, Makar, Maroon.
Oh, you mean an elimination game for Colorado could be eliminated, most likely.
Is that what you were saying?
If Makar's not there.
Yes.
Yeah.
Okay.
I thought you were saying it the other way, like they're going to eliminate Seattle game.
I think they're on the ropes here.
It's a nightmare for them.
I hope Ron Francis and Joe Sackick put on their best suits and wear their nicest ties
and do whatever they need to do with their hair because they are going to be pleading their case
in a move that could potentially win Seattle the series and lose it for Colorado.
The fact that they gave him two minutes for interference on the play after going to video review shows me that they're probably going to be a little lenient on this.
Yes, they are.
Because they've already looked at it one time in real time amongst themselves as referees.
That's probably how the league is looking at this.
It's probably one game.
Well, then give him nothing.
Like, if you had a chance to review it and it's two minutes, then give him nothing.
That's very interesting.
But they are not going to do that.
And he is going to get a game, and everybody will be like, and then we'll move on.
No, but that's a fantastic point.
If you looked at this and said it was two minutes for interference, there shouldn't be supplemental discipline because it was just a minor penalty.
But the big problem with what you guys are doing is you're looking at this with logic, guys.
Look at it the way the NHL does, which is we don't want to be held to a standard.
so we'll do
whatever we feel like today
is the sun shining
well I guess it's two games
if it was cloudy
I'd have given him one
the league has to
now
by giving
Makar
even one game
the league is
directly
contradicting
the officials
of that game
and I want to know
if
I honestly want to know
and again
none of this will ever
take place
but I would love to know
what the officials
justification for that was
if they actually
had to be
accountable
like NBA refs
and have to write it down
that would be my first question how did you come to the conclusion to reduce this this player left
the game if I'm Joe Sackett that is the principal like if oh god where's your wife for this one Adam
we need a lawyer in the room like that is my principal argument in NHL player safety court
is NHL officials veteran NHL officials who were picked to work in the playoffs not everyone's
picked to work in the playoffs with the stanley cup champions they had a chance to review this
and they called it two minutes why is my guy getting anything why is my guy getting anything
and i i wouldn't want to be that crew i would not want to be that crew if the nhl chooses to
make this suspension what is the conversation going on today between that officiating crew
i think it's stephen walkham who's the head of officiating and the league what is that
conversation today if listen we all watch that play and not knowing what the penalties were we
all agreed it was a suspension if i'm joe sackick i have every right if my player is suspended no
matter how long it is to scream bloody murder as to why you reviewed it you called it too
my guy did the time did they get scored on uh no i don't think they scored on that power play
on the on the macar power play i believe they did yeah that was the score on that one yeah
yeah yeah they scored two times on the power play your honor it was a one goal game and it cost us
a goal and they reviewed it and colorado's got a case they're gonna get one going now uh if that's
eric johnson i think that's five you know yeah like five and five and like in the moment five
games no no in that moment i think the referees gave kale mccarr some benefit out and they gave
him that too and that's ridiculous i think it's really i think it's way easier to give that
penalty to kyle clifford yep then uh arguably the best defenseman in the world that's tough um
so uh so with that with that fun party uh miko ranton comes back and basically puts the team
on his back in the
second period.
Scores 15 minutes in and then
scores again within the last minute of the
second period. You go, fucking Colorado, man.
They are a Stanley Cup
winning team. Without
Natushkin, without now
they had Kael McCarr. Kael McCarr
soon to be out. Landis Kock. Landis Kock. With all
the players that they don't have
and no Kadri either.
Mikko Rantanen is still able to do that. He has
five goals this playoff already
in four games. It's amazing.
nothing happens in the third and we have been talking about the most consequential penalty
of the future series but what we have not yet talked about is the most consequential penalty
of this game which occurred in overtime with josh manson this penalty robbed colorado of the game
josh manson has been a thorn in the side of colorado avalanche fans a little bit
if they're going to dog anybody, it's this guy
because he is very good, but then he takes
dumbass penalties. Not a chance
they win the cup without him. No, not a chance.
Not a chance. But you
also see Avs fans go, ah,
Josh! And this is for tripping.
Now, I want to talk about tripping
in overtime.
I mean,
well. We had
two tripping calls in overtime yesterday,
but what did you say about the first tripping call
that we talked about? Dead to rights.
you have to call it um willie had an imminent scoring chance and he took out both legs you
don't you don't have a choice but to call that penalty and you are directly affecting the game
by not calling it penalty uh josh manson's penalty came at 159 so that's two minutes into the game
a minute later jordan everly scores his first goal of the playoffs from jayden schwartz and
Daniel Sprong, who had a heck of a game.
He's, man,
he's so underrated, Jordan Eberle.
Still. Still. Still. Seattle
dominated this game. 43 shots to
22, 52 hits to 37,
37 face-off
wins to 29, 2 for 5
on the power play, less penalties, less
giveaways,
actually less takeaways, and 26 block
shots. This was a Seattle game
top to tail, and they only
barely squeaked it out against a very
depleted abs lineup just shows you how good the abs are i don't i don't think leaf fans can be
annoyed today but flyers fans cover your ears i think we need to give dave hackstall some credit
here i think so too he i think so too head coach of a team that is outmatched on paper they are
well and i don't think when when hackstall was in philly i don't think we realized how chaotic
the front office was that hadn't really come to the air come to the fore yet yeah and then he
joined voodoo wizardry and bullshit with uh toronto and he goes to seattle and it's amazing
what they can do with a few saves jesse is so desperately trying to find this i want to show
you because you haven't seen it right i'm trying to show you this like five minutes fucking
tripping penalty is that it right there yeah okay let's see it let's see which obviously we can't
show it but um oh that's and then is this going to the goal here yeah that's the goal that's the
right that i saw there it is yeah everly scores here we go tie game
i mean yeah he got walked right they were just they out like that's the thing jaden schwartz
we'll go one more time again imminent scoring chance they don't have a choice break out here
and then yeah but he just goes right for the dive and you have to wonder what manson is doing there
because he closes in on his defensive partner if you can jesse if you'd rewind it back to the blue
line for a second if you just show the screen grab here at the blue line oh my right there
where josh manson is the guy in the middle of the ice and he is turning just realizing that
jayden schwartz is there that his you got two guys covering nobody who's in the neutral zone
is that mckinnon he's pointing is he look at him he's like oh fuck like that is i mean that's the
kind of stuff like you're puck watching josh man straight up i cut off the pass i believe the pass
just went through there whatever get the man get the man come on man the leafs have done that a few
times where i'm like holy fuck like oh if you okay you give yourself a higher chance of cutting off
the pass what if you don't no i mean mckinnon when you were saying he's pointing oh mckinnon
he's trying to block them his stick is out there's nothing to forgive so his stick was there
yeah that's bad man anyways it's bad um bad i i uh yeah i want to leave that series for a sec
and I want to talk about this series
Jesse's favorite series
my favorite series
New York New Jersey baby and guess what
guess who scored Rangers fans
oops sorry guess who scored
who scored that's playoff
performer Andre Palat baby
oh I thought you were going to say Jacques Hughes
well Jacques Hughes scored on a beautiful
breakaway goal I think he's done that twice this series
he's a good player amazing good player
Vinny Trocek tried it up tied it up at the beginning
of the third and then Siegenthaler and Palat
Palat put it away at the end, but Siegenthaler was the one that gave him the go-ahead goal about eight minutes into the third.
Home ice is lava.
A lot of – Gallant, like, went off on the team.
And he was mad.
He had every right to because the Hedo line, the third line was good.
Don't call them kids line.
The fourth line, the Goudreau line, was pretty good.
The top six was completely – they disappeared.
and it was so strange to to have the rangers where when you have all of that all of the stars like
we'll name them all panarin zabinijad tarasenko kane they didn't exist last game power play got
booed it was awful and you just you wonder like if it's uh a mentality thing like they took it a
little too easy they didn't get up for it because all those guys are gamers obviously but for them
just to not show up and the thing that was most upsetting was that they allowed new jersey to play
new jersey's game that's how new jersey won they sped up that fucking game it was all back and
forth and they ran them into the ground and the first two games of the series they didn't allow
that at all that's why they went back-to-back 5-1 games because they shut that down and then
game three it was very close very close all game um i don't think i think they showed up for most
of it and then they let it go and um akira had a great game in net i'm just gonna say i have i
have something here in game four he didn't have to be great it was 22 shots made every single save
there's no high danger opportunities devils fans i made the same mistake you did so let me apologize
in the way that you did sorry lindy and i don't understand how that top six just allowed the
devils to play the devils hockey that they've been playing all season when we've reached the
playoffs you you're at home you have an opportunity to put them on the brink of elimination and you
just don't show up it was fucking it was egregious you can't do that that's the thing with the devils
man like i i wasn't for them in the series because i thought the rangers would grind them down the
second you stop doing that though they yeah they could probably eat you alive yeah and that's
That's exactly what's happened, and a few save calls.
Vitek Vanacek gave up nine goals on 52 shots
in the first two games of the series.
Akira Schmidt has given up two goals on 58 shots.
Wow.
Hey, so we got Vegas and we got Winnipeg for the final series,
at least what that happened last night.
And honestly, I hate saying this.
Winnipeg won more face-offs.
It was pretty even otherwise.
Winnipeg got two power play goals, but it is feeling to me like, as Jesse pointed out,
the very mid-Vegas Golden Knights are midding Winnipeg right out of this series.
And with, who is it?
Ehlers, Morrissey, Shifley.
Perfetti is an underrated miss.
Huge, huge.
Yeah.
Absolutely.
And they're going back to Vegas.
Really tough to overcome.
And the thing is, Shifley just scored the goal that he needed to score.
And then, you know, later on in the game, he's hurting.
And Pierre-Luc Dubois said after the game, he was kind of like, you know, we got to.
He's like, we can feel sorry for ourselves or we can just get to work.
He needs to have the game of his life.
Lowry has to have the game of his life.
Hellebuck has to stand on a skull and brain.
Yeah.
I mean, there's no mysteries about game five.
Right.
Yeah.
I mean, we know exactly what they need to win.
They need a few superhuman performances.
they need some performances that are unreasonable to ask for um but that's what the playoffs are
about they got like neil pionk right now is just trying his best to hold the team together he was
he skated for 27 minutes oh my god he's gonna play for even more in game yeah like next game it might
be 60 yeah like the dude that whole decor is just trying their absolute hardest right now it's just
not enough and i hope people don't take the vegas has mid stats uh thing the wrong way like i was
saying that to say that they finish first in the western conference despite their mid stats meaning
they just find ways to win they are so good that no matter what happens no matter what kind of game
they're playing versus their opponent they always pull it out in the end they always find a way to
score one more they're pretty good at everything they're really good really they're mid at
everything yeah in some way that leads to victories and winning the west yeah and vegas i think takes
care of business versus winnipeg they look so beat up and the core for you guys that's kind of my
question that this series is like is this it do we see the big the big ehlers shifley i think
ehlers they gotta figure out ehlers they don't want to play ehlers the coach doesn't like ehlers
so if you're keeping the coach it starts with dubois well yeah i think that like dubois is a
canadian as soon as this right he's alone he's uh he's a rental i'd also put him like secondary
amongst the core i'm talking about the big names i'm talking about morrissey and shifley and connor
and wheeler i think you retool you retool uh but i think shy flea is the tradable asset blake wheeler
we already know isn't or wasn't last season they tried to trade him they couldn't he's got another
year i think after this this is his contrast kind of untradeable yeah i mean perfetti if he comes
back they have a good team brad lambert yeah but how do you augment it and make it better that's
my question so you you sort of squeaked in this year how do you and we're talking about the Jets
as though they're dead they could come back and win the series they could I mean there's also
there's a few goalies in this league you can have this conversation with but there were conversations
of are the Rangers optimizing Henrik Lundqvist I think they did they have some long runs right
um are the Habs wasting the prime of Carey Price yeah got a run to the final out of it
How long is Conor Hellebuck going to play like this?
Like, I don't think the Jets can ever go full rebuild with a goalie like that.
No, they can't.
Unless you commit to trading him.
And I just don't see that happening.
So it's got to be a retool.
Bottom calls out of the whole city.
Don't you dare.
You're never going to be bad enough to truly rebuild with Conor Hellebuck as your goalie.
The most interesting thing, I think, out of, hey, maybe you should trade Conor Hellebuck.
He is the UFA after next year.
oh i didn't say maybe you should 6.1 on the cap for next season and then a ufa so that's why so
you your decision this year is do we do do we do that for one more year or do we pull the shoot now
so if they decide to pull the shoot now there's a lot of interesting assets because at the end
of next year like i said the 2024 season um you have one year left of shifley you got one year
left of blake wheeler you got one year left of connor hellebuck and and again you have to bake
dubois into all trade discussions he's gone he's gone he could play all next year for the jets he's
gone he's a hab yeah he should just wear a habs jersey during the games just be one future on his
helmet yeah why not yeah why not you know what maybe the way to sort of retool is to to to get
the habs to give up something fun and young for pierre luke dubois because it's going to be a
big package that gets him over there what for like he should just change his nameplate to not
tampering it's so ridiculous because he's an rsa i know like dude he's not supposed to have this
kind of you know you don't have the rights it's also awkward when is he cared doesn't his dad
work for the jets organization too it's sort of awkward right like he's just i think he's in their
minor league system i think he was yeah i'm not sure if he still is but it's awkward if he is
that's awkward man you're just pushing your way out your dad also works for the same org
like that's brutal wasn't that lowry lowry was being coached by his dad oh maybe last year i
don't know wasn't he i don't know i don't know um i feel like more would have been made of that
no you i don't remember um so google but that's a lot of work no uh the morning is starting to hit
it is starting to jesse you have news yeah um they made a decision on camel car one game that's my
bet oh i feel like i presented some fantastic arguments for both two games and none which is
why i think they landed on one one thing that might be fun is me just playing the video and
finding let's do it are we allowed to show the footage probably not no no hear the audio my
favorite sound yeah here we go monday night in seattle avalanche defenseman cal mccarr
was penalized for interference against cracking forward jared mccann which caused an injury
as the video shows mccann takes a pass from a teammate that springs him on a shorthanded
offensive chance with mccarr pursuing from behind mccann takes a shot which is saved by the
goaltender and ricochets up and out of play after the shot mccarr lightly pushes mccann with his
right arm as he skates over the goal line the players disengage and skate into the corner
Now, significantly after McCann had released the shot,
McCarr delivers a shoulder check on McCann that puts him into the boards,
causing him to fall to the ice and causing an injury.
Oh, and his head hits the glass.
It is important to note that McCann is in no way eligible to be checked on this play.
No.
McCarr finishes this hit well outside the allowable window for finishing a check.
In addition, it is clear that McCarr knows McCann is not in possession of the puck
when he decides to deliver this hit.
Yep.
While we have heard McCarr's assertion that he assumed that the puck would bounce into
the corner and the play would continue, the onus is on McCarr to ensure this occurs before
initiating contact.
Yeah.
The result of this play is a body check to a vulnerable player who is not eligible to
be hit that causes an injury.
To summarize, this is interference.
No head contact, though.
McCann suffered an injury on the play.
Injury.
McCarr has been neither fined nor suspended previously in his 238-game NHL career.
The Department of Player Safety has suspended Kale McCarr for one playoff game.
I knew it.
One playoff game.
Yeah.
That makes no sense.
What's even worse?
He got a Kale McCarr discount.
Yeah, he did.
100%.
I think if we establish.
If he's a Leaf, it's two games.
Yep.
No, it's 15.
If we establish that the bunting hit is worse, the ceiling is two games.
so he gets half of that what makes it worse i think and they didn't they factored it in
they factored it in but they didn't factor it in enough the puck was over the glass
play had been stopped not only is he not eligible to be hit no one is eligible to be doing anything
so there's uh and his his excuse like oh i thought the puck was gonna come back in the corner the
puck hit the netting the the guy uh there was a guy i follow on twitter tyler horsefall and he's
like mccarr admitted he didn't know where the puck was and he laid the hit anyway that's actually
that's not the argument you think it is kale that's actually quite bad that's bad um yeah i
wouldn't say that in court um but he did i don't think it would make you look good uh to a jury of
your peers but that's not who it's up to it's up to the department of player safety i tell you what
that's the majority of players in the nhl it's two games yep he got a caramel car discount yeah
it's again it's not the worst thing i've ever seen it's pretty bad i mean he'll be back for
an elimination game no matter what he'll have an opportunity potentially to finish off the kraken
that's not going to go over well so i got i got some questions for uh for the next few days okay
uh hurricanes and islanders carolina leads this series three to one is this the end islanders
are a hard out so is this the end guys i'm asking you just give me your opinion are they out or
are the islanders out after this next game i think it goes six jesse and i think they're done
uh boston and florida florida and boston do not play until wednesday okay um are the florida
panthers still in the playoffs when we do this show again on friday
i just have a hard time seeing it it's game five they're heading into
and that's in boston yep yeah i think you might be dead the oilers had a huge comeback the other
day and it featured former leaf jack campbell uh stewart skinner was pulled after the first
period allowing three goals um from velarde arvidson and anze kopitar uh he saved too he
huge saves they win in overtime five to four so what zach hyman oh yeah from zach hyman yes
yeah he had the winning goal sorry and he also played 25 minutes which is just bananas that's
par for the course um so the question going into today uh jesse and steve was do you go back to
Stuart Skinner, or do you now play the hot hand
of Jack Campbell? We have an answer, but
Jesse and Steve, I want to know. You're the head coach of the Oilers
right now. You're Jay Woodcroft with his Jay Woodcroft stance.
Do it, Steve. You go back to Stuart Skinner.
Do the Woodcroft stance.
Pop that ass. Yeah.
There it is. I think you go back.
I think you go back to Stuart Skinner.
Jesse. No, I think you ride Jack Campbell.
And the choice has been made.
It is Stuart Skinner.
They are going to go with that. I thought he looked really good
in the time he was in that.
Oh, Jack?
Yeah.
Oh, yeah, he did.
He did.
So, and it was, you know, I think there was a lot of,
a lot of Oilers heart in that comeback, right?
Like it's, that was, and that second period for them was huge.
But I think more importantly is they stuck in it in the third, right?
They didn't let the Matt Roy goal, which was the go-ahead goal,
get them down.
The Edmonton Oilers are far and away the best out-of-town team
to watch in the nhl they're the best team to watch if you don't have a dog in the fight like i mean
you're watching it if you're an oilers fan you're watching it if you're a kings fan but if you have
the choice of all the games on the schedule and you're an out of town fan you gotta watch
edmonton you have to no game is over check in their favor or against checky oh sorry go ahead
uh mcdavid got his first five on five points uh in that game uh what the dino line has been
shutting him absolutely down at five on five that's how good that's the power of phil dino
yeah it's it's dino trevor moore and arvidsson who's been out there just wrecking the show with
david fucking more you know what an out-of-body experience it was seeing will ferrell with face
paint going ballistic because of something trevor moore did cool right so yeah uh not to not to go
full derrick lalon but derrick lawn and not to go full on but um they were running the 131
formation to shut down the mcdavid line and when things opened up that's when
when things opened up was when uh they put dry saddle back with mcdavid it was too much to stop
So I wonder if, you know, you just ride it and you just say, hey, we'll overpower them with this one line.
Make it too hard for because the Kopitar line started to fail when McDavid was out there in the last game.
But the no line still kept up their pressure.
But it's a little too much when McDavid is just with Dreisaitl.
Yeah, but a little unstoppable.
They've never not put up points together.
They always do.
And if you put them together, they'll get points.
It's the rest of the lineup that becomes a problem.
uh i feel like it's maybe less of a factor than it was in years previous but if we're talking a
full 60 minutes i don't know if that's the best option the oilers have yeah if you're losing
absolutely go to it if if it's tied no that seems to be the best uh course of action for j roadcroft
is hey when i need to break it out i break it out and i know it's going to do damage and it's an
it's a hit breaking case of emergency glass thing that he has going on and it's worked wonders but
I don't know. I got a lot of faith in LA with the way
Corpus Allis is playing and the way they can get timely
goaltending. This series, it's
going to be tight right down to the wire.
I told you. Thinnest margin.
Here we are, tight after four games.
This might be the Western Conference final.
Oh!
You know what?
The most underrated series in the playoffs,
mini Dallas.
Let me ask you about that. Who goes up
next game? Tight,
tight series. We're going to talk about Marcus
felino two non-penalties getting called i don't know how that i think that minnesota i almost
called them north stars i don't know i i gotta go to bed the second i get home minnesota wild
have probably been the better team easily um so but the thing about being the better argument
is that your goaltending counts towards your team yes people love to say oh the goaltender did this
the goaltender is a part of the roster players so like jake ottinger stole a game for the dallas
stars and that's okay because he is a part of the roster i missed this who started for minnesota
was it philip gustafson yeah mark audrey hasn't seen the ice since ah so you can abandon your
regular season plan in the playoffs yeah yeah interesting i um game five is in dallas yeah
i think dallas takes game five but ultimately it goes seven you don't have enough fingers to count
the amount of breakaways that the minnesota wild had during that game and dallas still found a way
to win because of their goaltender and timely power plays that probably shouldn't have been
power plays and who knows if they sneak out a couple more of those you can't have more than
jay godinger has he's a famous millionaire athlete six six and gorgeous i know when i
interviewed him in uh vegas sorry henderson as he walked in the room i was just like get lost
his teeth are nice uh in the in the minnesota dallas game it's crazy a lot of hair per square
inch i think minnesota is outplaying dallas let's just this is that alone uh 11 takeaways to two
in the last game, and Dallas still won.
Checking in with the NHL points leaders.
Mitch Marner is at the top with 10 points at four games.
Dreisaitl, second, with nine points in four games.
And Rupe Hintz, eight points in four.
Now, assists, Marner leads the league with eight.
Pionk with seven.
Adam Fox with six.
In goals, Rantanen, Dreisaitl, Kreider.
all tied for number one with five total,
which is pretty spectacular for all of them.
There are, I believe, in terms of total points,
there are one, two, three, four Leafs in the top ten in points.
Those three top goal scorers,
none of them play for a team that's currently winning their series.
Ooh.
Tight, tight, tight, tight.
Tight series, yeah.
Tight, tight, tight.
Good point.
The road teams, too.
Unreal run for road teams the last, like, four days.
dominating all of the play.
And you know what, though?
Isn't that how it started, too?
Like, weren't Road Team 6-2 to kick off the playoffs?
Yeah, that first game.
The Road Team has won every game except for Game 2
in Leafs-Lightning.
Holy shit.
3-4.
Road Team is undefeated in Dallas Rangers.
Jersey Rangers.
Dallas.
Dallas Rangers.
Devils Rangers.
Have you seen Into the Future?
And there's your cup final, Jesse.
Devils.
That feels like a 1999 special there.
That was a cup final.
Dallas, New Jersey, for sure.
All right, and it's 0-0 in quadruple overtime.
Medano comes back out, plays his 1,500th game.
Kelly Buckberger up for the faceoff against Kelly Buckberger.
Here's Patrick Elias.
He led New Jersey this year.
He had 43 points in 82 games.
That's New Jersey in the late 90s, man.
Jamie Langenbrunner going toe-to-toe with the clone of Jamie Langenbrunner.
He played for both teams
He played pivotal roles on both teams
By the way
Didn't he pull a Hossa and he was with
Dallas, New Jersey
My brain's operating at 20%
Let's not even guess
Why don't we just wrap the show
Jesse you have something else you want to do
Last thing is we got to correct
A mistake that you made from last show
Steven Dangle

thing julian always makes me makes fun of me for is when we had our live event montreal i called
the place like la cagey like yeah and julian julian has he he his french is like a dance

yeah yeah like the french way yeah yeah yeah because that's the way to say it yeah anyway
you could you could bottle julian's french and sell it at sage you could put it in your diffuser
coat the room what's that soap store that people always like to go to
like he's literally he's he's a lush soap bar when he's uh when he's it's just so it smells good
he's a bath bomb one of the meanest pranks i saw in high school is someone went hey man here's some
candy and they gave it to the guy and uh it was a bar of soap from lush and he had braces and so
the soap no oh god hey can i can i tell you one quick story about lush one quick story and then
jesse i'll let you i'm sorry all right somebody told me i had a girlfriend once like years and
years and years ago who was like you should try bath bombs at lush so i i was like okay so i
brought one home and i had a bath and i don't really like baths because they're boring and i'm
like grown yeah and so i have this and i i'm sitting in the bath and i'm waiting for the bath
bomb to go off and and i'm just sitting there and i texted her and it was on like you know like the
the quirky sort of thing i text her i'm like nothing happened and she's like what do you mean
And I'm like, well, she's like, do you feel good?
I'm like, yeah, I guess.
But like, it's a bath bomb.
Wasn't it supposed to like pop or something?
Like I was expecting it to like blow up.
I thought you were going to say you left the plastic on.
No, no, no, no.
It was doing stuff.
I thought it was going to be like, you know, you thought it was like an actual bomb.
Oh, you're just an idiot.
That's the moral of that story.
Just an idiot.
Sorry, Jesse, go ahead.
No, I was going to say.
So the bit is Julie and I are on the show.
you give us a list of french things to say i say it and then julian i love that can we fly him to
