Let's go!
So it would have been a perfect opportunity for us to congratulate those who won the playoff pool.
Yes.
So let's start with the giant losers.
Let's start with the people at the bottom.
Yep.
The SDPN folk who made their picks this postseason.
Okay.
Spark for the bracket challenge.
Important.
How many people were part of our bracket challenge?
A lot.
A lot.
Yes.
Good.
I don't have the exact number.
I could pull it up, but I don't have it in front of me.
i want to know how many people i was better than because my number is large
um if you give it ask me that question a couple minutes ago i could have prepared it
it only occurred to me now i don't have the total number of people that's funny but we'll do this
we're such a good show here are the sdpn bracket folk drew steve and jesse are the top three
boo we finished drew finished 527th he had vegas in the cup final so he got a lot of points 181
points total steve finished second 2620th place i finished third 3377th place so that's the top
three that's the podium there it's a miracle you got into the ties you did yeah into the top
4 000 i i nailed the first round like i did really well and then from there except for edinson
yeah except for except for admins i think i was like six for eight in the series or something
like that and then from everywhere else i was garbage so i was able to stockpile a bunch of
points there and my 97 points was enough to beat uh everybody else because four through eight is
julian hayden maddie cj and adam boy cj and adam tied for 5 644th place right at the bottom and i
stuck with my colorado avalanche pick and i'm don't regret it at all so i'm in the top half
yeah there's i think we hit uh eight i don't think we hit 10k but i think it's somewhere in
eight something good lord yeah i have to i have to check and pull it up but that's the sdp on
bracket and the uh the standings of everybody here drew steve jesse julian hayden maddie chris
and adam beautiful drew was the only one to have a cup finalist as his cup pick so there you go um
the winners this year or this year yeah we announced at the top we are giving away this
alexander ovechkin hoodie and it's a very special hoodie because there's only unlimited number
ever made yeah we have a bunch of beverages on the table oh a few beverages we showed this off
at the beginning of the playoffs.
We'll show it off here
to congratulate the winner.
It is one of...
Which number is this one?
Oh, it's right here.
Oh, you got the edition?
So there's only 100 made.
This is number 14.
That's so crazy.
It's from a local shop
in the D.C. area
called Major D.C.
They collabed with fanatics
in the NHL
to make this
one of 100
Alexander Ovechkin
the greatest score
of all time hoodie.
So the first place
of the bracket challenge
we'll get this also throw in a mcfarland toy uh with ovechkin i'll throw in a mcfarland doll
yeah doll yeah figure man child doll yeah i'll throw one of those and get that shipped out to
you and we'll give you a mini stick too a bunch of prizes you'll get in your box the congratulations
to
Tomas.
Tomas!
Tomas!
Tomas!
Who had the Carolina Hurricanes
winning it,
collected 366 points,
actually destroyed the competition.
Yeah.
Wow.
Suck it, Gary.
You're number two.
Gary?
Yeah, Gary gets something.
Gary, this is the minifig
we'll throw in.
Oh, that's cool.
Oh, okay.
I thought it was Gary's.
What does Gary get?
Gary gets...
Hey, this is sick.
these are uh not cheap either this is an ovo oilers jacket uh very nice they did a collab
ovo did so back in the 90s if you're listening they used to release these starter jackets all
the time yeah everybody can just buy them for a reasonable price not anymore now they're a part
of expensive collabs yeah you're gonna get this one for finishing second and uh places uh i think
one through eight will also have prizes for you there check the spark app you can fill out the
prize form there but yeah congratulations this is a really cool uh jack starter jacket and the
ov hoodie is obviously amazing is it possible to look at tomash's bracket no damn because they did
not leave a lot of points off the board no they uh they mailed this this their bracket challenge
obviously uh the top 10 is filled with people who picked the hurricanes yeah because that's how
you're going to rack up the most points having the person in the finals can we scroll down to
the first person i don't even know it's possible to the first person that didn't have the hurricanes
like the highest person that didn't have the hurricane no i can only see the top 10 yeah i
also wanted to know yeah yeah but we'll all get all this we want to go through it on friday yeah
i'll just i'll pull all this info now that you guys have more i didn't know you guys
another question but spark does have all of this data that i can just pull up in
excel and as long as i get it prepared before the show uh we can go through it on friday all right
I would love to be awesome.
I think it'd be fun.
OK, but yeah, really cool prizes.
Those be shipped out to you.
Congratulations, Tomas.
So I'm going to I want to do we want to keep the
prizing on the thing or do we want to?
All right.
You can talk.
OK, well, I get it away from all the fluids.
Yeah, I just I know Steve's going to he's going to
the arms will fly and I don't want to wreck the
Ovechkin case because that's a part of the
collectability here, right?
Yeah, we'll throw it back in the box.
Yeah, you can talk and I'll just do so.
So I'm going to I'm going to I'm going to ask you
a question.
First off, there's been a lot of news.
And so if you're in the mood for some Leafs stuff, the Leafs have been center stage in a lot of news recently.
We're going to have Anthony DeMarco on in just a little bit here.
Anthony, if you don't know, Daily Face soft writer and reporter for the Philadelphia Flyers.
And so he's going to talk a little bit through some of that trade.
And we're going to talk a little bit through some of that trade after we have Anthony on just to kind of get his sense of it.
And then we'll kind of we'll drop it on you.
But the first thing I want to say is this morning, the Leafs made a hire.
and that is jim hiller now buddy i want to i want to explain i want to say something i want to say
i told you i told you what happened so we'll break there and then we're going to clean up and come
back sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's
where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal
one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor
to rappel down and clean all the windows,
but they never clean my windows.
Uh-oh.
And their way around on that is like,
well, it's a patio window.
You can do that yourself.
And I'm like, well, hang on a second.
What if I don't want to?
I don't have the stuff
because you got to have that scraper thing
and the washer thing.
The chemicals.
You got to have the right chemicals.
See, that's what I'm saying.
That's why I used TaskRabbit
and I employed a tasker.
Here's the thing.
TaskRabbit connects you with taskers in your area
for furniture assembly, home repairs,
lawn maintenance, mounting, window cleaning,
all that stuff.
Here's the deal.
3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled.
700,000 home repairs.
1.5 million moves and counting.
Go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list.

And we're back.
All right.
I had to clean up Steve's area because he spilled water just like I said he would.
Just like I said he would.
And just in time, Jesse had removed the Alexander Ovechkin kit because that's all cardboard
and Steve almost wrecked it.
Yeah.
Who was our winner?
Tomash?
Tomash, yeah.
Poor Tomash would have had a very wet Alexander Ovechkin hoodie, but it would have been one
of 14, Steve.
It would have been.
It would have been.
It would have been unique.
Yeah, it would have been.
You're right.
Oh my goodness.
Unique.
Steve peed on this.
anyway um let me ask you a question uh-huh it leaves higher jim hiller yeah okay and here's
what's happened in toronto and i'm noticing this a lot and this is not going to make me popular but
i don't give a shit what has happened is people go oh that's confusing and then they go well wait
a second actually here's why it's great and when we talk about email andre i i'm actually excited
about the player i didn't get the oh yeah we haven't done that uh i i'm excited about the
player i'm excited about what he's going to bring um i still have questions about the value in that
trade but we can talk about it yeah yeah let me ask you this if john shika is not the one
hiring jim hiller if today it's brad true living hiring jim hiller you're losing your mind you're
losing your mind you're losing your that's like any but because it's john shaka i've already seen
people try to tell me well this guy's an analytics guy this guy's a numbers guy yeah listen and and
hold on hold on let me say this and then we'll get into it okay he could be all those things
and he oh man la was so they were they placed this in goals against it five on five last year
in the worst fucking division we've ever seen in our fucking lives okay all right fine
um produced a cup finalist yeah sure uh i have i heard from i talked to several people today
there was a lot of happy or crying face emojis uh people associated with the game in the game
and one of them said i was surprised i i thought when the la kings fired jim hiller that would be
the end of jim hiller in the nhl is what i was told and what i think is happening here is we are
retconning this and i've heard jim hiller's a good guy so it was craig berube so it was
great person great people jim hiller apparently is another great guy i will not lie to you i don't
like the way that this uh that i don't like this hire i'm rooting for him i want him to win but i
just want to be clear from the outset uh kevin fiala was saying in press conferences last year
yeah we can't play one three one this is fucking ridiculous and that so we're going from craig
berube hockey to one three one is that what we're gonna do well then the kings made the playoffs and
got swept yeah which i will say listen some roster construction issues there too yeah be honest i'm
i'm i'm stunned i'm completely stunned but i want to i want to talk about what what you were saying
for a minute because uh i think it i think it applies to the trade as well the the narrative
surrounding leaf fans is there's nothing sane about it there's nothing sane there's nothing
rational about it we're their fans we're fans we yeah yeah but the perception is we're foaming at
the mouth subhumans oh we hate you we hate you yeah yeah no we want to love you actually it's
completely insane and you look at the trade yesterday with wool and benoit and i had people
reaching out and going why don't fans like this because they were looking at it without fan eyes
going this trade actually makes a lot of sense and we'll get into that but if you look at it
with fan eyes we like joseph wool we love joseph wool yeah we love joseph good person what about
simone benoit oh well he's this he's that he's that we like him leaf fans cheer for the leafs
yeah right so they they hire john chica what are we gonna do sit around and be miserable for as
long as he's gm no some people have decided whether he's a success here or not or whether
they thought it was a good idea or not well he's the gm now well that's that's what i've decided
right but what i don't like is the decision that oh now he's great well hold on a sec no no i i
you're correct okay you're using logic and rationality and all that but like justin was
doing a bit in the chat yeah he said i've always been a hill i've always been a hiller fan i was
really hoping they would hire hiller like he did the bit so well so thoroughly some people aren't
doing the bit though some people are legitimately like leafs made a hire they're my team let's go
yeah let's go jim so when people are supportive of the thing their team is doing it doesn't
shock me ever no that's that should be your instinct let's not change history i totally
so jesse everybody everybody wanted to hear from you yeah i had a bunch of messages like i can't
wait to hear jesse on today's show i got i got those shout out everybody who messaged me it's
fucking awesome remember when we were like who's the next hellebuck we got him we got him so jesse
does that mean he wins the jack adams this year because i'd be down oh my god i pray that i end
up on cold takes exposed yeah for everything i'm about to say about jim hiller but the leafs have
made 41 hires as for head coach of this franchise he might be 41 on my list of wow and he hasn't
coached a day for this team 24 25 the la kings have an analytics just oh my god that's a great
team analytically and people are now giving Jim Hiller so much credit for that season and giving
that as the reason that you should be really hopeful for what the Leafs are bringing in here
and I truly believe because we saw play out the next year that that season was a mirage there's
nothing to take away from that year because it flamed out in the playoffs so terribly against
Edmonton that year and that's the year when he goes and he makes a stupid coaching challenge
I'm not going to hang him his whole career on that one move, but it didn't work.
And it didn't work against Edmonton.
The next year, everybody in that locker room hates him.
Like, that's the only thing you hear out of L.A.
Nobody likes Jim Hiller.
That means something.
90% of your job, as we saw with John Tortorella coming in there and motivating the Vegas Golden Knights to win us, to get to the Stanley Cup.
That's all he did is just getting guys to play for you.
and i know a lot of people really like jim hiller from his time in toronto yeah he was an assistant
under mike babcock yeah anybody standing next to mike babcock looks like the greatest guy in the
world and so was dj smith and both guys are portrayed as good cop yes it was the ultimate
it babcock bad bab cop cop babcock it's there good cup it's it's there bad cock bad it's there
is that what it is bad cock and title of the show is bad cock jim hiller was good cock so you know
what in that everybody can use some good cock right in that role i'm not sipping on some good
nut sorry yes that's it i'm not surprised that so many people who are around the team at that time
liked jim hiller but he was given this opportunity in la and it could not have gone worse for him
he was good and then the goodness was shown to be fake and then he was bad and the bad was all time
bad i don't trust this hiring because i'm also not willing to just forget that that press conference
with chica and sundin didn't happen like we're getting a little away from it and some people
want to forget the feelings that we felt when pelly and chica and sundin were up there and
and keith pelly has no answers for why he brought in this individual and chica's just going over
diligence oh yeah the due diligence that's why he brought him in and chica's going over that he
managed a bunch of wealth while he was away from hockey like this stuff these hirings make me
remember those moments and i was willing to over the last couple of months really because it's been
a while give him so many passes because he's been completing the check boxes three squares on the
bingo card i said it like a week ago he's the craig brew by firing do that go draft mckenna
you got the first overall pick wow go get mckenna do all that everything's look good from the
outset clicking the first few tiles in mind sweep yes and then we get to where he's like
really making a decision that can alter this franchise and the first one here i'm not happy
with it at all i and now here's the thing i'm rooting for jim hiller we're all rooting for
jim hiller i hope again as you as you started this segment off jesse because you're gonna get
clipped you're gonna get a bunch of people going ah these guys are too negative i have every right
to say guys i'm a little weary of the history here now we do know we found out this morning
that, what's his name?
Jim Hiller was a guy that John Shika
wanted to hire in Arizona.
But the Islanders offered more money
because the Coyotes didn't have any.
And so he ended up going to the Islanders
working under Barry Trotz.
Now, if you love a first round exit,
this guy's your man.
Because not only was the assistant coach under Babs,
he was also the head coach
for a couple of first round exits under LA.
but was an assistant coach for those really good islanders runs a few years ago so with barry trotz
what's incredible about jim hiller is it kind of what we've described is the reverse of the
conversation that you and i had when the leafs hired lane lambert and it was oh well his time
as head coach with the islanders was awful and it was like yes but he's hired to be an assistant
coach and his assistant coaching resume is very good yep jim hiller his assistant coaching resume
is actually quite good quite solid here's the problem when lane lambert was hired here it was
to be an assistant coach which he's very good at jim hiller has been hired to be a head coach and
there isn't an abundance of evidence he's very good at this the kings had some good regular
seasons under him lost to the Oilers every year and one of them it's it's all they had they had
one good regular season under him yeah the first year he was in there he came in halfway through
I think he coached 30 something games in that season and then they flame out in the playoffs
again and then the second year the 24-25 season I think they put up some of the most points in
franchise history it might have been the record yeah 24-25 season which is incredible and then
the team did nothing in the playoffs and then last year was a disaster and by the way the nothing in
the playoffs was almost something yes almost and then he fucked it up it was it was a stanley cup
final in 2025 between two teams who in one of their series were down to nothing and losing game
three came back one game three won the series they go to the stanley cup final i'm sorry if that's
like the hard bar to judge you on but that's the whole thing yeah i mean that's performance
it's you either got it done or you did it and i'm sorry you were up in those series but you
didn't get it done the so okay so he 34 games when he comes in as the fill-in he's 21 12 and 1
very good 632 win uh point percentage very good uh then 48 and 25 and 9 which is 640 even better
So that's good. That is good. But again, playoffs come and I guess, listen, there's a portrayal of Leaf fans besides being completely just millions of sociopaths as the perception, which I think is unfair.
the other older maybe more realistic reputation of leaf fans with within other fan bases is we're
a little arrogant but the arrogance comes from well they have a lot of money and for a long time
we expected they're going to go out and they're going to get the most expensive most qualified
candidate because the leafs print money and it doesn't matter we were sold dallas eakins which
i think would have been a surprise to a lot of people and maybe a disappointment but you're like
there's a name patrick waugh some people were really into it a lot of people really weren't
i wasn't there's a name um yeah there's jay woodcroft there's oh there's there's new guy
that's interesting uh i know i'm forgetting david carl david carl was another one and that would
have been expensive aviolette almost oh yeah aviolette yeah please let's let's not forget
that he wasn't the first choice apparently aviolette was for for this coaching job oh for
the and the king swooped in and said whatever you want that's what i've heard like you just
got outbid by the kings well the the no question that they're trying to run a tighter ship no
But Steve's on to something that like the Leafs job should be the most coveted job in sports in terms of the sorry, in the NHL, because you can pay whatever you want for whoever you want in the biggest market.
It should be brings Chuck back for the best coach in the league.
Yes.
And they are not operating that way.
No, they're an NHL team with NBA team money, which very few teams in this league can claim.
every time like you could call it arrogant the leaf fans would think this but because of the
money that mlse has every top candidate for gm should be hired here they hired john chica
every top candidate for head coach we should expect to be a candidate here they hired jim
hiller well they know what i mean well i think what they're saying now is we're analytics people
and and here's the deal okay so shaika is an analytics guy again as you said jesse was hillary
by the way yeah well that's what i keep hearing he's a quote-unquote progressive coach yet to
see it he pitched he pitched an analytics company before he got his coaching job and that's which
one awesome yeah my problem sometimes with with that and i want an analytics based team let me
just say that sure sure sure uh because we didn't have one and holy moly okay um is that you can use
analytics to rationalize bad decisions afterwards. And it happened here before. Now, Kyle, Shani,
even Lou, those guys made some really smart calls. They also made some really dumb calls.
And each and every time it was rationalized by well, but the numbers. And so what I want to be
careful of, and again, I wish him well, I want him to succeed. God, please bring us a cup.
i can't wait to be wrong about this if you bring us a cup um is are you going to use those numbers
to tell me that actually justin hall is good and i'm not seeing what i'm seeing and it's definitely
not pumped up by the fact that he's playing with uh jake muzzin is it are you going to use those
numbers to tell me actually cody cc was a perfect uh counterweight to morgan riley on the top pair
this year it is somewhat because that is what i that is my issue yeah is that the numbers often
are used to explain shitty decisions you know behind us rather than what the number should be
used for which is making good decisions going into the future and i i do want to say this with
jim hiller and i think this is relevant okay okay you know they are going cheaper there's no question
but what i will say there's no way he's making more than basically any of the candidates we
named he was the power play coach during the early years of the maple he's we're talking about like
jvr standing in front of the net tipping things and when they finished last well no yeah but also
the next year when they were really good right um and austin apparently apparently don't know
this for sure still has maintained a good relationship with him he coached uh matthews
nylander tavaris riley and relevant muzzin because he still works for the team yeah he was the
assistant coach in 15 16 16 17 17 18 18 19 so all of those leaves so i think least power play
went from second last when they finished last to second the power play in 16 17 is the reason they
made the play i i would also argue that jvr had an otherworldly tippet in season like we have not
had a guy like that since 40 goals yeah he was crazy um but i think i where he got close my
point is that with with hiller there's something obviously that matthews likes because they're not
making this hiring without that and you know i i know people have given cj and to a smaller extent
elliot a lot of shit about austin the report about austin uh not necessarily being committed
to the leafs i still want to point you out to the fact that both of them were right and pierre
lebrun just backed that up a week ago saying well i mean all signs are pointing to him being back in
the fall but he hasn't fully committed yet like we're you know i'm glad that we're 90 of the way
there but it isn't 100 and i think that weighs into this too and listen these guys are playing
every day they are they they know better than we do and it's time that and we asked for this last
season austin take a bit of ownership of who's coming in to coach yeah because we need his
expertise on it this guy's pushing 30 i need to know what austin matthews thinks i need to know
to a lesser extent
but William Nylander
and he's pushing 30 goals
which is not enough
that so
so that's where
I actually have
some happiness there
because I can't imagine
that Austin Matthews
is like yes
bring me the
1-3-1 guy
which is what LA played
I don't think
they're playing
1-3-1 under Jim Hiller
I think Jim Hiller
is going to play
a different
a different sort of game
with this team
now he had
a player
likened to Austin Matthews
in the sense that
he could score
and he was a great
defensive forward
in Anze Kopitar
But I don't think he's going to Berube this and be like, all right, I know it's David
Kompf's role, but get out there, Austin.
I think he's going to use Austin properly.
And that makes me really excited.
So we're talking about some of the negative stuff.
I'd like to talk about the positive.
Austin clearly has to be on board.
This guy clearly understands Austin and Willie.
And you need to get the best out of those guys to win.
So, okay, I'm good with that.
Now, the thing that I also wanted to point you guys to, that this is inextricable proof
that this hiring is a 10 out of 10
is my Aunt Margaret got off the plane to visit
because my mom's going off the radio here
in a couple of weeks.
It's not a retirement.
It's a stepping away.
And so she's coming in to visit.
And my Aunt Margaret is a Tri-City Americans fan.
And her last name is Hiller.
And she said, listen,
when Jim Hiller was with the Tri-City Americans,
he was awesome.
So she says, this is a great hire.
And I think you guys should just accept that now.
Tell her to get the jersey.
you should you should the tri-city americans jersey is actually pretty sick um it is it's
very captain america i i'm i'm mostly having fun with that but like as much as i'm skeptical of
this the way i was about shaka i'm still open this to open to this going great i just think
the kings were i think that i listen i understand that they weren't great last year i think a lot
of that's roster construction too like i can't put that all on jim hiller right that is a poorly
constructed team what if he coached a team the way it was built you know because it was built
that way yeah a lot of shutdown kind of centers they so can he shift to the way toronto's built
when jim hiller was head coach of the tri-city americans by the way in the 13 14 season and
actually the 12 13 season uh brandon carlo was on that team oh interesting i love oh jesse hockey
3db roulette even though you're using elite prospects yes uh i yes i love that thank you
there you go wish i had that information for my video that i shot so damn fast yeah that's okay
uh before uh coming in um things are rarely as good as we say they're going to be when we say
they're going to be great things are rarely as bad as we think they're going to be when we say
they're going to be terrible.
Hiller fits into the second category, I think.
But this is a massive gamble.
I said something pretty outlandish
when the Leafs made the trade with Ottawa
to get Matt Murray.
And what I said was, what if this is,
I think what I said is,
what if this is the beginning of the end
of Matthews in Toronto?
And it's outlandish.
and no no it's it's correct well i laid it out and i was like okay if this doesn't work
and this was before he signed the extension that he's currently on like that was a legitimate fear
at the time what it did spell out though it was sort of the beginning of the end of dubas
in toronto samsonov basically kept him on life support um but like that was his big swing to
get a starting goalie and it was matt murray who played 19 games but he did end the devil's winning
streak and i'll never forget that yes he did knock the posts off to do it with three goals called
back in the same game where they were outshot i think 70 to negative three and you know what
devil's fans were giving me a lot of shit at that point so i liked that that was so that was a i was
one of the more so mad more surreal regular season games of the last few years yeah at least for
the Leafs but so I was I was wrong for
the right reasons I'm gonna say with
that Hiller could bring him back to the
playoffs maybe they win a cup Matthews is
a leaf for life but if this doesn't work
out I promise you it is exactly what you
think it is oh yeah it i desperately desperately want it to be the success that obviously john
chica thinks it could be if it's not buckle up i think it's fair to say sorry jess i think it's
fair to say that every move is like that every move they make right yes right but the head coach
is the biggest one jess go ahead sorry i think with the options available it's just this doesn't
feel like a franchise that's chasing a playoff spot right now like there's so many candidates
I would take over Jim Hiller right now and as as we've said now like he may go on to win the Jack
Adams and they may win the Stanley Cup who knows but if I'm looking at the Leafs I'd say I'd wait
a week to see if Cassidy is available truly now that the playoffs are over I would have gone with
somebody more a little more experienced because you have veterans there who need to make the
playoffs this upcoming season to stick around this doesn't feel like the guy who is going to
fit the direction that you're trying to turn the franchise towards i'm confused well we don't know
what that is i think there is a mandate from ownership that you have to make the playoffs
there's no losing that can go on in toronto keith pelly said it himself they aren't going to rebuild
john shika is not allowed to tear this thing down he has to make the playoffs or at least
be in competition for year in and year out and this doesn't feel like a move that fulfills that
someone there was a quote that was like uh they went out and they got emil andre who was like an
underused undersized puck moving defenseman and the next day they went out and got a head coach
that played brant clark 16 minutes like with dubas you always knew every single day exactly
what he wanted the Leafs to be.
Kevin Papetti could literally...
Which was the Blue Hurricanes,
by the way.
Kevin Papetti could say
six months in advance
the player he was going to get.
It was hilarious.
It was crazy.
The players he was going to trade for,
sign, draft.
You could read it in a star chart.
Treleving, for better or for worse,
mostly worse,
you knew exactly what kind of player
he was into.
And I say into
instead of what player
he was going to get
because he did not get any players for the final year of his job almost literally um i still
now with a couple moves under their belt don't have the slightest idea like people oh what do
you what do you think the leafs are gonna do what yeah i have no idea who's gonna be on them i think
it should be said too that nobody could telegraph this move at all it didn't leak at all to any
insiders everybody was actually wrong on who the top candidates were and this was a name that never
came up once when we're talking about leafs uh vacancy so we we talked about woodcroft
pavelski carl laviolette michigan guy yesterday so okay i'm not calling free jote but there is
a narrative that he's getting all the stuff now because he works for rogers and the leafs are
owned by rogers i don't well he got he got the notice like three minutes before they made the
that's it right but if he's getting these crazy uh tips why then did he less than 24 hours ago
report western michigan's pat ferschweiler uh is among the candidates to be next head coach of the
leagues why less than 24 hours ago did he report that oh i listen they're running a tight ship
right now yes and that doesn't last forever it never does but it starts that way and that's good
it doesn't last forever and i can't help but like we know that the cj article uh rattled pelly bad
bad that like there's someone who is basically inside the leafs uh uh decision making room
on trade on trade deadline day who get who relayed all this information to cj it's rattled and bad
But the other side of that is everyone's like, oh, maybe this, maybe that, maybe that.
You allow people to warm up to the idea of what about this?
What about that?
What about that?
And then you just plunk Jim Hiller in her laps and everyone's reaction naturally is what the hell, right?
What happened?
Where did this come from?
Yeah, there's just so many questions.
It came out of nowhere.
It's backfired, I think, if that was the strategy, which it's...
keith pelian i think he's a very insecure guy and i kind of wonder if that is exactly what it's just
all the other guys that we had over the last like months now it's been a couple a couple weeks though
when you're getting down to the names i understood them i understood the direction you're trying to
take like laviolette i don't think is a perfect would be a perfect fit for the least but i
understand going the old guard and somebody who works in the first couple years to actually get
some winning out of that team you know i would have got that david carl made sense for the young
a university guy that nobody can pry from the team that was their first choice actually not
it was him yeah and he he wouldn't go at all bruce cassidy like you everybody knows how much i
think he would be the right guy for that that made sense all the guys you named dallas eakins
jay woodcroft there's rationale there and this coming out of left field there's just there isn't
really an explanation yet yep yep and you know what uh great content it's fantastic oh my god
and my amr is thrilled so like are we are we losing here we're not losing i was sitting down
on my red yoga ball that i use to shoot lfr videos because it makes me bouncy and fun uh and i was
like as a leaf fan i'm absolutely terrified as a content creator i well i have to admit this is
wonderful no it's great you know what i and and uh a conversational or uh a hire where people are
split on it's interesting yeah it's interesting it got boring last year when they were bad and
did nothing that was like okay let's talk about the seventh loss in a row yeah and now i i asked
just so just so keith pelly and humza terrani can uh relate to this segment because i'm sure so far
they're like well these guys are just talking out of their butts um i asked google gemini
gemini not claude no i don't have claude i've got i've only got the free version of gemini
Hiller is an unflashy
but highly practical hire.
If you believe the Kings
had a mediocre roster
that overachieved
in his defensive system,
he'll thrive with Toronto's
elite game breakers.
However, his tactical limitations
and playoff history,
if his tactical limitations
and playoff history
repeat themselves,
Toronto's gamble on analytics
over star power
will face immediate scrutiny.
I guarantee Keith Pelley
read something similar
out of whatever AI system
they're running at MLSC.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Just rolled over
and asked perplexity.
Perplexity.
Can you tell?
Oh, it's perplexing.
All right.
A hundred percent.
Now, we got to bring on Anthony here.
So I want to talk.
I want to talk to Anthony about the trade yesterday.
And then I want to kind of talk amongst ourselves a little bit about the trade.
What trade?
The Leafs traded a guy named Joseph Wall and another guy named Simon Benoit.
Get some things back.
I liked him.
So why don't we bring on Anthony DeMarco right now?

And you guys know that we are active partners
with movember every single year you see my awful facial hair uh steve and jesse also get to do some
facial hair you're gonna do it with me this year right you're gonna do it again good luck man oh
wow why don't you care about men steve wow i don't know did you know that paternal depression
also affects men and usually within the first 12 months it's 22.4 percent of men report feeling
depressed and here's the thing when a father is depressed uh the stats are something like 40 or
50% of kids will also feel that way as well. Because kids are obviously, I hate to say kids
are like vibes people, but they kind of pick up on their parents, right? This is an important thing
that we've got to look after. And so if you go to Movember.com, you can click on the Men's Health
Week Make It Count link. And obviously, they're going to talk about 1 in 10 fathers experience
postnatal depression. Men engage when they feel understood. Checking in with men in your life
matters because here's the thing uh every minute of every day a man dies by suicide four out of
every five suicides are men and so this is why this stuff is so important movember.com if you're
looking for a community if you're looking for links if you're looking for understanding if you
know somebody who's going through this or maybe going through this go to movember.com it's right
there on the front page click the link check it out we want to welcome on for the very first time
uh from daily face off mr anthony demarco who is a uh longtime flyers fan uh who transitioned into
flyers journalist and so anthony and i've been texting and messaging back and forth for a little
while here been looking for a reason to get you get him on and lo and behold the leafs uh make a
trade with the flyers yesterday and i was like hey man seems like a good opportunity that he called
from over a month ago yeah so so you've you've had the flyers being a destination for wall for a
while yeah so tell us about yeah yeah so i i well first of all thanks for having me on guys huge
fan of the show um so this is a pretty big honor for me but yeah i just i i just i just think that
it's made a lot of sense for the flyers for a lot of reasons like i like dan bladar he was a great
story in the nhl this year but at the same time like sam urson was probably the worst goalie in
the nhl over the last 18 months statistically and he's ours and you yeah you know what guys i would
be shocked if sam urson stays with the league yeah because he is an rfa and whatever but um
they they needed some more insurance right and goaltending is so volatile in the nhl nowadays
like you guys would know better than anyone whether it be stolars or jack campbell or freddie
anderson or whoever it may be from one year to the next you can't really depend on a goaltender's
play staying completely even from one year to the next and sam urson cost them a lot of regulation
wins this past year so i think getting a guy like joseph wall who was kind of on on the outs a
little bit from what i heard the flyers told john shika very early on in the process like we want
nothing to do with anthony stolarz so they kind of knew that you had to move off of move off of
joseph wall or if you want to go down the road of dennis hill to be and the cost certainty is a big
one too for the flyers the 3.7 i believe for this coming year and next and i believe he's the same
age as dan fladar so it all kind of lined up perfectly for the flyers to get two goalies in
their late 20s and two guys who went healthy have been really good tandem goaltenders at the very
least but isn't that the key yes when healthy so yeah i i know it's very very likely urson moves on
and doesn't get signed but let me be a naive child for just just a sec there were a number
of years with the flyers where he came in and he wasn't great but he was the best option and like
actually won some games for them that other goalies couldn't is there any chance he gets it
back like what was behind how poor he was this season he had at 870 yeah um it's a great point
steve because he was a really good backup when they had carter hart that was the 23 24 season
and it was as soon as heart got taken out of the picture for all the reasons we know
and urson became the guy where it started falling off a cliff and i think a lot of that is in urson's
fault like we're get probably gonna get into john tortorella later but he rode samerson into the
ground and as we saw in the cup finals john tortorella gets very committed to goaltenders
and their backup goaltenders before they signed dan vladar was like a rotating cast of felix
sandstrom who's not in north america anymore a cal peterson who was horrendous after like what
one or two good seasons.
The Ivan Fedotov experiment
was a complete disaster.
Alexey Kolesov.
So a lot of it was just
Ursin being thrown to the wolves.
And I do think that did hurt
his development 100%.
But this year was very peculiar to me
because Dan Vladar,
almost from the onset of training camp,
became the starting goaltender
for the Flyers.
And then Ursin just couldn't
find consistency.
He got his game back on track
kind of towards the end of the season.
and danny breer said it publicly yesterday i believe he said it on overdrive and on during
his press availability that he's a battler and he finds ways to stay in games and very good in the
shootout but just lacked a consistency so in a roundabout way steve i just think that his game
was really hurt by like a poor development path by not having something a guy to fall back on like
a good veteran backup goaltender and i really think a change of scenery is what he needs more
than anything else and i can tell you the flyers feel the same way you know i'm i'm i'm curious
about um you know it's funny toronto has become uh emile andre experts uh it's amazing how quickly
emile andre has become the best known person and yeah you weren't watching him last year like i was
yes this segment is going to be us explaining him to you yeah yeah yeah um uh what listen uh
when i saw the trade i'll just be honest i i was surprised at how little joseph wool brought back
um but emil andre is not terrible and he actually has a lot of things that potentially this new
group can like so so what did you see from him i i know that there's a bunch of stats cards and
stuff out there publicly tell me what you saw and what he might be able to bring to a atrocious
Leafs defense well I think first and foremost he is everything that the Leafs back end lacked
under Bradtree living in Greg Berube a puck mover quick undersized for sure but could get the puck
up to the forwards and I think you guys could tell me better than anyone that that is the biggest
problem that the least blue line had this past year was getting the puck from the from their
own zone up the ice um i think he's a competitor i had people with the flyers tell me yesterday and
i believe danny breer echoed this in his media availability that he will skate through a guy
no matter how big the player is big time competitor a workhorse but i think when he gets
into the offensive zone that's where you kind of he lacked a little bit where like it held them
back from being used on the power play which the flyers have had a historically bad power play for
like three years now specifically lacking a power play quarterback so i think that's where like you
kind of want to see more from andre's game and he didn't do enough to establish himself as a top
four defenseman and you saw at times like even in the playoffs as a lot of veteran coaches do
they'll go and lean on big veteran bodies on the back end like the brick talk it did that with noah
julson alongside nick sealer and i just don't think there was a place for him the flyers have
two undersized blue liners in their top four with cam york and jamie drysdale there's a bit of
redundancy there but i think there's an opportunity in toronto for andre's game to really be used to
its max potential because he brings elements that no other guy on that blue line and correct me if
i'm wrong guys but he brings elements that no other guy on that blue line can at this very
moment for the Maple Leafs definitely not like in their uh like in terms of the five six seven
eight like just guys they would they would bring in as options like if he can do me a favor and
not handle the puck like it's a live grenade yeah I'll be thrilled like like that's that was the
problem it was you know with Benoit admitted at the end of the season in a bad year he was he was
bad yeah but Benoit is Benoit whereas I'm like okay I know what he can and can't do but I'm like
hey philip myers he looked good as a flyer for like a little bit maybe he gets it back and
he was something else he was bad and so i mean like is so is this guy the other thing i keep
hearing is that he's he's tough right like or you know you mentioned danny briere saying that
he's tough he'll go through guys is that actually true i mean like i i've had never seen him back
down um like he's not one of these players that like avoids hits like let me interrupt you let's
say we're playing mason marchman he he decides to intentionally torpedo himself through anthony
stoller's his chest is he gonna sit back and wait for the penalty to be called or is he gonna beat
his ass no i think he'll get in the scrum okay honestly and and and i think that was um i think
that's something that became infectious with the flyers over the last several years even when they
were poor but i think that was kind of like the john tortorella holdover effect where like it was
like the us against the world mentality and maybe that has been lacking with elise for quite some
time but yeah he's not one of these pushover guys like you bring up phil myers like phil myers was
almost like a like a giraffe on skates at times and he would shy away from contact like i remember
that playoff series against the new york islanders in the bubble what my god six years ago now and it
was horrendous it was it was horrifying to watch phil myers try and play around his net but that's
not emil andre he doesn't handle the puck like a grenade he has a good first outlet pass he can
skate pucks out of trouble he's shifty like i said the only real hold up for me with him even away
from the flyers context is just like in the offensive zone you would have wanted more from
him to produce get shot towards the net be more effective on the power play but as a transition
guy and around his own net for his size specifically I really like what he brings
and I think it's a really good upside play for John Chaik and the Leafs what do you think his
ceiling is because it's not like they're getting a 20 year old or 21 year old he's 24 now but he's
I think Flaherty fans think he still had room to grow and you mentioned the playoff games there
is only able to get into two in the Pittsburgh series two in the Carolina series so he wasn't
trusted by the end of it to play fully for the playoffs is there a lot of room to grow for with
the leafs is he max out as a top five like defenseman like is he gonna crack the the top
four pair like what are what are we looking for here honestly jesse i think it depends if he could
become an effective power play guy if he could become an effective power play defenseman even
as like a second unit guy i think he could maybe be like a four or five maybe like a poor man shane
gossespierre road like a role like i i don't think he's ever gonna put up numbers like ghost because
Godspear has the cannon from the blue line but if he could just be somehow an effective guy
on the power play and on the man advantage I think there's room for him to be like the
staple of a third pair and who can bump up into the top four if need be and because you look at
his underlying numbers you look at the eye test like he's a good five on five defenseman in his
own end transitionally it just really comes down to the offensive zone and as someone with the
flyers said to me yesterday it just comes down to the fact that he didn't produce enough for them
to warrant viewing him as a top four guy or even a consistent third pair guy when you have the
likes of york and jamie drysdale and to a certain extent of travis sanheim already in the top four
so yeah i think if he could find a way to be a power play defenseman in any sense then he could
be a number five 100 it's funny because that's jesse like that's what people were saying yesterday
So the initial shock of the trade happens in Toronto.
People are like, that's it?
And then they do a little deep dive on Emile Andre.
Oh, he's actually pretty good.
And then people are like, well, he's going to be a power play guy now.
And so that's the part where I'm a little bit like, I guess we'll see.
And that's exciting.
People confuse puck moving defensemen with offensive defensemen,
and they're not necessarily the same thing, right?
He helps create offense by giving it to the offensive players,
but he doesn't create offense by doing it if that makes exactly yeah oh well look at travis
sanheim sorry to cut you off adam like travis no but travis sanheim is exactly that workhorse
could skate the puck out of problems good outlet pass but he obviously is a better skater but you
put travis sanheim on the power play and it's anemic at best so i 100 agree with you uh steve
that puck moving and offensive defensemen are completely different things and obviously i don't
think andre will ever get close to what travis sanheim is but i think that's why you need
emil's game to kind of develop in the offensive side because he can't be that workhorse 25 minute
minute muncher like sanheim has become i i never in a million years before yesterday i thought i
would ask this question what are some emil andre moments that stood out to you
um you know what it was and it wasn't even an emil andre moment it's an off the ice moment
so forgive me it's gonna be more comical but it was when i think it was charlie o'connor
wrote something because emil andre had a really good stretch of games in like 2024-25 i think
it was december 2024 and he had this really good run of like 20 games and i think it was charlie
o'connor wrote like oh they got their top four defensemen now and john tortorella took a massive
issue with it like a massive issue yeah it was really and then he got sent down and then like
in a press conference torts was like oh you guys thought that he was a top four guy so it's not
even like an on the ice moment but that's what pops into my head was like that somehow andre
having a good stretch of 20 games
after like one of his initial
call-ups really
rubbed towards the wrong way. It was kind of
funny. You can't call his
players bad. You can't call his players
good. You can't
even suggest that there might be
a second goalie available when your goalie's out of gas
in the finals. You know what?
It's a good thing that we, you know, part of
when we were talking about this segment beforehand, I wanted
Anthony to talk about was John Tortorella because John
Tortorella rode real hard for the Vegas
golden nights and they punted his ass out the door and from what we understand he was kind of
surprised by that now uh anthony like one of the things that i want to understand from you is now
john torrella's name is out there like people were actually trying to bring him up with toronto which
a he's not moving to canada even in vancouver he didn't move to canada uh and b um uh i don't think
john torrella likes the media all that much so this might be a tough market he'd get in a fist
fight by halloween a hundred percent yeah so so let's talk a little bit about what you saw from
john tortorella that you also saw in philadelphia where there are a lot of similarities because
every time this guy takes a job behind the bench it's well he's changed you know the job that you
used to know that was the old john here's a think piece uh on how he's a new how he's the new john
and by the way he likes dogs so what are your thoughts on on torts his run in philly and what
you saw in Vegas um yeah so in Philly you know he came in at a very very very bad time for the
Flyers like the Chuck Fletcher the end of the Chuck Fletcher era and Dave Scott was basically
playing the Keith Pally role for the Flyers was just it was a very dark time there was a very
dark time and they brought in John Tortorella to offend essentially be the face of the franchise
and I will say this he needed to come in because it was a country club type of atmosphere in Philly
from everything I understood with the Claude Giroux's and the Jake Borchak's like that whole
area the Kevin Hayes um and I think the first year and a half to two years he was exactly what
they needed just like he he was all about like commitment standard working hard even though
you're a bad team like staying in games you had that year in 2024 where they almost made the
playoffs i think they missed out on the last game of the season after trading sean walker at the
trade deadline who was a major part of that blue line he really put in place a lot of good things
that still hold over like travis sanheim was a second pair defenseman at best before john
tortorella travis connect me was nowhere near a first line player before john tortorella like
owen tippett really developed into the player that he is under john tortorella so there was a lot of
good things that john tortorella brought but in saying that he took like making john tortorella
the face of your franchise was probably the worst thing you could do for an ego that big
and like and it's it's all and i heard stories about him that he plays off that he doesn't look
at the media he does he has burner accounts he has all that you know he would know strategically
when to bench a player like it was said to me once like do you think it's a coincidence that
he benched matt bay mitchkov during a tnt game on a wednesday night and put him in the middle of the
bench like john tortorella like he like he was very calculated what he did um you remember that
they traded Sean Couturier uh or traded they named him captain in Toronto uh like hours before the
game or the night before the game and from all accounts that was a John Tortorella decision and
then apparently the game the day after they're just like it was a mistake coots is garbage blah
blah blah and they went on the bench Sean Couturier several times down the stretch less than a month
after being named captain so then you look at his his run in Vegas and I think that's probably the
perfect scenario for John Tortorella to work like a two three month run a team that by all accounts
hated Bruce Cassidy and as it was described to me like he probably didn't change a lot of the
x's and o's like we forget this but Vegas probably has the best assistant coach in the NHL
in John Stevens who's won three Stanley Cups as an assistant coach between the Los Angeles Kings
and the Vegas Golden Knights they kept Dom Ducharme there as well like none of the coaching
check the staff change for john oh joel ward yeah let's go yeah he's so we got to shout him out
so all this to say is like i think that that's why kelly mccrimmon probably walked away from
him because they're saying okay this is a guy that comes in raw raw like it's not bruce cassidy
i'm gonna fight for the players like how dare you suggest going to another goalie like mitch
martyrs the best but it's gonna run thin right i think he's a very like for it to work with john
tortorella it either has to be like a good veteran group or an irrelevant bunch of misfits which is
why i think it worked in columbus for so long because they became relevant because of john
tortorella and i would argue that since he left they've become irrelevant again and it's you know
what i mean yeah i think you nailed it about why vegas was a success like his tenure was just come
in galvanized the troops and get them all to play a certain level of just tenacity and we need just
energy from these guys and it was nothing about changing any of their strategies because they
played very similar to how they played in the regular season it was just with a lot more energy
and he got the room together where all the guys cared about each other and it was us against the
world and that's all you got mad at each other jesse nobody turned on each other they they didn't
at all because they all loved each other because john tortorella was there and like that's exactly
what you need out of him just two months of hey get these guys to all play together and that's
what he did and you don't want him around for the development of young players or an extended season
where there's ups and downs you just need him for the we portion where you're just running on all
cylinders and they weed he did it very well it wouldn't shock me at all if he was hired next
spring yeah this i'm not even kidding he should be a break in case of emergency for every single
team at the end of every regular season yeah he should you know when you're playing uh like road
football with your friends and you have every time quarterback so do you have the one guy who's
quarterback for both teams yeah he should be every team coach for any team that's struggling i like
that come in there for two weeks get everybody playing right and then go to the next friend he's
a trade deadline coach yeah i like that that's a good idea why not i tortured me i want to ask
anthony you know because we were in san jose and we'll never forget i remember being at the
elevators in the hotel where the sharks put us up when that john tortorella press conference
happened we had just in toronto in toronto of course it happened in toronto just to go with
what you were saying um what was your reaction at the time and where do you think because that
has always been a moment for me that like when i look back on my career of one of the most
compelling stories a coach literally quitting on television and then not quitting and then being
sort of surprised that they were like yeah you can't come back um that was that's one of the
most compelling stories i've ever got to sink my teeth into uh what what was your reaction to that
did it come out of nowhere did you see it coming like what were your thoughts on that
when he basically said like i don't know if i could coach this group that one yeah um i i think
like torts and that's when he had that blow with pam york after yeah that's it um i just think that
he was all about rah rah rebuild this is at the footers we're gonna rebuild this thing but once
it got into like year three and they regressed so they had that really successful 23 24 season
heart goes away they trade sean walker wrist aligning gets hurt in february and they miss
him down the stretch and they just went right down and they missed the playoffs on the last
day of the season and then the next year they come back at 23 24 and it doesn't go well right
off the start um fedotov is garbage urson's garbage colasov's garbage and then danny briard
just started taking players off that roster like he trades frost and farabee for essentially nothing
they had kuzmenko for like a month but then they flipped them to los angeles they traded scott
lawn to you guys even though i guess you would rather not talk about that or that day in general
give grabenkin back yeah i want him i want him back i don't care how many points yet
yeah i'd rather have that yeah anyway so he's like a golden retriever i love nikita grabenkin
so they trade um they trade scott lawton and then there's another guy they traded as well
the names oh they trip well they trade eric johnson at the trade deadline but i mean
that was pretty uncircumstantial but bump alex bump who's the guy who went to uh
was it block who's the guy who went to minnesota no no no he's talking about the
yeah that's bobby brink bobby brink bobby brink yeah oh that but that that was this year oh right
yeah sorry so no it's all good so essentially you take off like four veteran players off the roster
and all of a sudden like the team is now even worse and i believe he got fired like a week
after the trade deadline yep and as it was described to me it was just like he just started
losing his mind like he was 65 going on six like he just started going crazy and like like if people
had meetings without him like you would barge in and it was just it was mayhem and it was like he
couldn't handle losing that much and it was like it was like that one step forward two steps back
type of thing and i think it just made him go insane and you just knew that it was time and by
all accounts like once he was relieved of his duties it was like he was just it was like a
breath of fresh air for him got it you know and and again like every you hear he loves dogs he's
a great guy away from the rink and all that but i mean i just think he's someone that really wears
on you mentally and when things are winning cures a lot right like you hear that about bruce cassidy
like a lot of players hate him but when you're going to a cup final or winning stanley cups or
whatever you deal with it which is what i think was the case in 23 24 when he pulled that stupidity
with couturier down the stretch you know you're just like okay but we've had success under him
but then 24 25 was just not a good season right across the board that when you're pulling these
antics and like you reference adam publicly quitting after a game more or less in toronto
in toronto which again like i i can't confirm this but just based on what i know about torts
i'm pretty sure that he knew what he was doing in the big in the hockey mecca you think after 25
years torts doesn't know what he's doing come on yeah like like you think he would have done that
in seattle type of thing like for sure not but um but yeah so i just i think that's just the
best way to look at the john tortorella tenure in philly is that like you know i have this old
Stone Cold Steve Austin shirt.
It's a Rive, Raze, L, Leave.
That's John Tortorella.
And I think that's what he did in Philly.
And I think that's kind of what he did in Vegas as well.
Last question before we let you go.
Simon Benoit under Rick Tockett.
We have to get to that.
He seems like he might be a Rick Tockett guy.
What do you think?
Very quick.
Yeah, it's a little frightening
because he loved Noah Juleson.
He loved Noah Juleson,
but Simon Benoit is a left shot guy
and they already have Nick Seeler.
So, I mean, you guys can speak to Benoit more than me.
is he a capable third pairing guy or is he better off as a number seven he's definitely capable um
he actually some of his best hockey he was on a second pair with jake mccabe obviously jake
mccabe doing the lion chair that work i want to say mccabe and benoit took turns being the guy
who played on the right um he's he's better as as uh left his last goal in the nhl was
a playoff overtime winner and you might have noticed that the leafs didn't make the playoffs
this year so it was actually it was quite some time ago but like flyers fans i think are gonna
love this guy listen he's a limited player he's a really limited player but he's an absolute
beauty of a guy jesse you liked him a lot hey dealing with yeah great guy great personality
yeah yeah beauty of a guy would die for his teammates block shots superman punches adjust
his thumb takes a ton of really not great penalties um he's a perfect flyer does try
to kill someone once a night perfect flyer yeah perfect flyer yeah uh anthony demarco thank you
so much for joining us today man real real pleasure having you on thanks a lot guys enjoy
the rest of your summer.

Guys, we're coming up to our last one of the season.
Our last 100% clutch Canadian
presented by Moosehead Canadian Lager.
You guys know Moosehead is 100% owned,
100% packaged,
100% brewed in Canada since 1867.
We're going to celebrate Canadian players on Friday
with a truly Canadian beer.
It's the last major brewery in Canada
owned by Canadians.
How should we tackle it?
Should it be like season long or look ahead?
What are you thinking?
I was thinking season long.
I would say who's your clutch Canadian all season,
including playoffs,
which eliminates 16 of the 32 teams
because you have to include playoffs.
And I think we got it.
I want a big scope on this one.
I want a big boy.
All right.
And I'm not talking about somebody
that's won the Hart Trophy.
Well, a Russian won the Hart Trophy.
But I'm talking about,
or the Ted Lindsey Canadian won that.
But, you know,
I'm talking about maybe people that do not get
the love that they deserve okay and i want your suggestions in the comments too are you guys cool
with that do a little homework very cool steve steve will say he's gonna do the homework and
then two minutes before the segment he'll go shit and then maybe i don't gotta do my homework
because the answer is so obvious to me i already got it wow all right well here we go so friday
look out for our 100 clutch canadians presented by moosehead canadian lager
now uh by the way thank you to anthony for coming on that was great um i want to talk a little bit
about joseph wall specifically and you mentioned it when we were talking with anthony it's like
hey man you're treating a guy i really like and that upsets me now from a from a value perspective
like i have had the internet explain to me why emil andre is good and i even texted scott wheeler
said are we gonna like emil andre and scott wheeler said you're gonna like him he wrote about
him before this trade he did and he said you're gonna like him but i was i was i too he said i
too was underwhelmed by the return yeah and i okay so you know and it it does kind of follow
the way goaltenders are traded in this league for whatever reason everybody needs a good goalie but
when a good goalie is available everybody's like yeah you can have a fourth rounder and it's crazy
it's crazy why the value propositions aren't there but apparently they're not they're also
jumping the market on like a Bobrovsky or something like that and free agency so the Leafs are trying
to get something out of it they get a useful defenseman a pick that they could probably use
um I think it has to do with a lot of like people don't understand goaltending like the actual head
coaches they rely on their goaltending coaches and goaltenders come out of nowhere so often yes
that you don't need to pay for good goaltenders the goaltender who just won the Stanley Cup was
working out at Chipotle this is his first season starting in the NHL you don't have to overpay for
goaltender because you might just magic beans one well and bussy was you're right he was on three
teams this year and the first two and nobody knew yeah steve you said this in what was it the
the joseph wall video i think no you're like i i sit here and talk about hockey and people are like
oh you don't know what you're talking about i was like you don't know what you're talking about you
people who work in the game because everybody passed on bussy everyone bussy we worked at a
chipotle in the 2000s yeah which i again that's very recent sorry in the 2020s yeah yeah um again
that does not give me the same spark it gives the two of you i'm like yeah people have no but we're
just trying to context it for nobody knew that this man should be starting for an nhl team and
that's true because if he was starting for an nhl team he would not be working at this place the
least would not have claimed caden primo exactly would have claimed random chipotle part of it
by the way he worked at a chipotle in his 20s the same day caden primo and bussy basically
were available or consecutive days yeah the leaf shows told the story last episode about how yeah
that's how he led to the hurricane they don't know he was putting he was giving people guac
and extra charge i hope so to get back to your point the reason that wolves return i think is
a little underwhelming because people in the nhl realize goaltenders come out of nowhere all the
time and you know what else they realized jess let's just be honest about joseph wall yeah not
a guy you can rely on to be there and i i know that that's harsh but this is a performance
industry imagine there's three of us on this show and for whatever reason one of us uh can only make
it for uh what do we do 140 150 shows a year i don't know what if one of us can only make it for
30 of them 40 of them yeah or 35 percent of them however you want to do this that's joseph wall in
europe that's joseph wall and and you know here's what here's where i think it really started to go
downhill because the guys clearly got talent he's got a lot of talent and i believe in joseph
wool's talent but when he makes that last second save against boston when they're up multi goals
in game six it wasn't a safe that was the problem okay well whatever and he's hurt hurt
how hurt i you know and and no one will remember this this press conference but i remember it
vividly brad treliving was furious and he was furious because he was saying first off he
basically was like samson off's fucking gone right and there was some stuff i think was
behind the scenes that the least were not happy with so we found out since was as good as he could
have been in game seven and they still yeah but i think that they weren't thrilled with some of the
behavior and and then off ice conduct wasn't great yeah you get stuck in a moment like sorry
not to cut you off but you get stuck in a moment and a lot of leaf fans remember how they felt
game five and game six in that 2024 series against boston they couldn't beat him we'll go they
couldn't beat the kid they could not beat him he was great because i but so we believe in his talent
and we ever since have been like when's he gonna get back there and then he doesn't start this
season because of personal leave but when he comes back he was very very good and then he's gone
again and here's the thing about that that game seven game what told me that the leafs were not
thrilled with him was brad saying i don't know what we got to do with joe he said this i'm
paraphrasing you go back and look it up i don't know what we got to do with joseph wall i don't
know if it's changing his he said changing his training routine that was where i was like oh
listen matthews barely played that series neil andrew barely played that series which is weird
for him and you have a goalie that steals you two games they would have been out in five they
were playing horribly stole them stole them and all of a sudden he's not good to go for game seven
and everybody on that team was playing hurt and it till it told me at the time and it tells me now
that they didn't believe he was hurt enough to sit.
But he told them, I'm not good to go.
So what are you going to do?
You got to put them in.
It's not our opinion.
That's their opinion.
Yeah, we're going based off of their reaction,
which was peculiar.
Brad was furious.
You could tell.
You could tell he was mad.
And I think what it comes down to is,
regardless of the reason,
anybody in life,
you're in a performance-based industry,
public-facing,
you have to be able to be good to go and i'm not saying like oh he got run over and he's got a
concussion and he's got to be good to go that's not what this was no but it's the same reason
there's reservations about stallers yeah he had the highest save percentage in the nhl two years
running played 30 games yeah he can't play he can't give you half a season
rightly or wrongly right like no one asked sam bennett to bean him in the head but it's the
groin or the knee or the lower body whatever it is it's not there he had to have surgery i think
his first year here to remove pebbles in his knee or something like it's it's it again it's unfair
but it's still the truth sometimes it's not your fault but it's still your problem and i think in
in in wool's case i think there were legitimate questions within the organization about can we
rely on this guy to to be able to be ready to go jesse blake go ahead uh to try to actually read
words you were trying to find about brad oh thank you so this is from uh when that uh the series
ended brad shillings spoke to the media that friday and he said i've got faith in joe the
biggest question about joe is he's getting injured a lot we have to dig into that sometimes that
happens sometimes bad luck happens is there a training issue that we have to deal with and he
continued we need to change something in his off ice routine they get a terry koshan and and let
me throw that at you jesse uh the way he said it if you can find that clip i don't have a clip no
but if you're if you're a leaf fan and you're so inclined go find the clip that there is frustration
i said it a lot nicer than bradger livington yes you did and i respect that i appreciate that okay
now do we love joseph wall yes the man's 28 gonna be so how much when sorry yeah when the season
starts that was may 10 2020 so how much longer can the leafs hold on to seven million dollars
in net between stallers and wool or actually eight million if you if you have their how long
can they do that and only get 60 games out of the two of them if you're only going to get 60 games
out of two goalies it may as well be stallers at four he'll to be at 900 grand and probably
order act him off here i'll even simplify it for you uh he'll be was the best goalie for the leafs
this year by far and he's no longer waivers exempt next season you can't lose him for nothing
and he's stapled you can't trade stolars because he's older more expensive and more injury prone
yeah his contract is not going to get you anything so you and act him off is able to clear waivers
so wool those are your three wool is very obviously the guy like you don't even we don't even need to
walk through all of that like it's just so obvious when so going back to my conversation
or what i tweeted out at the time which was i don't get this deal and then i texted scott
wheeler and he's like you're gonna like him but i also was underwhelmed by the term where that
comes from is it wasn't that i didn't like emil andre i didn't really know much about emil andre
and all the people claiming they'd seen every zone exit that emil andre had ever taken you're
full of shit uh but i'm excited about emil andre and i can now rationalize why the return for wall
was a little more limited than i would have hoped still a defenseman they can use which they need
great third round pick hell where they could use those and clearing the cap space let's talk about
that a little bit now people were comparing this shiken with they're like wow like back in the day
the leafs had to attach the seth jarvis pick the first rounder guys to patrick guys cap space is
worth a lot and i i will it's not worth a tenth of what it was back then the cap has gone up and
wool makes half of mar yeah no it's not close they're not comparable yes it's good to have
cap space the problem is is that everybody's gonna have cap space this summer he's like 12
years younger it's gonna marlo there might be five teams that spend of the cap this year because
there's just not enough inventory yeah right and that's gonna be the case going forward a lot of
these guys you cannot i can't wait for for july 1st the numbers are gonna be eye-watering but
the point i'm trying to make here is okay so you you didn't yeah wool was easy to move the contract's
good i will say this i really like it for philly i think he's a good backup guy and i think i will
always say this about joseph wall believe in his talent and he's a good person and sit six zero
said something interesting on his show yesterday he he said i think this probably stung wool pretty
good because the thing about joseph wall is he loved being a leaf he did well you know people
talk about the pressure of playing in toronto you're now a goalie for the philadelphia flyers
that's that's pressure that's pressure man yeah it's pressure that's not a shot at philly either
but no there's not a ton of patience for terrible goaltending if you're moving morgan riley which
it looks like they will although no according to cj yesterday no no ask has been put in yet
for him to wave if domi is potentially on ltir because that is a i'll just say this
very very serious injury it's a big deal um the leafs are looking at like 38 million dollars in
cap space if you know now here amil andre is going to make two or three million bucks whatever i'd
be shocked if it was that much okay one and a half whatever it is his qualifying is 1.6 so that
no no airsons is one point oh what's amil andre's is like less than 900 grand oh that's amazing
yeah great so whatever he makes he makes the question is going to be who do they spend it on
right i would have gone to training camp with three goaltenders well you might you are i i
would have gone with wool stallers and hildeby i would have kept them on the roster because
everything we're talking about with these individuals the two main ones are that they
get injured and you're gonna need as much goaltending as you can because you can't trust
these guys and hildeby is the most stable out of all of them and how sure are we that stallers
isn't going to have another injury and then it's aktyamov that steve doesn't want to call by his
name i won't and he'll be those are your two goaltenders and i think there was a way because
of all this cash space you could have had you could have a comfy run with three goalies on
your roster you could still there's going to be journeymen available there always are um in free
agency or on waivers who make a fraction of what wool makes and maybe that's the bet they're
running with yeah that's that's i think that's their plan yeah yeah i'm i person like they just
sign it it could earnestly be earnestly listen he was awful this year absolutely horribly awful
he was an 870 um sign him to a sign him to an ahl deal i know he's gonna get time down there
why not i think if the leafs sign him to a contract and wave him he will get claimed
i do think that okay then then you say to him hey samuel listen yeah i know it's been a rough go
let's get your game back well let's get a season in let's get your game back to where it should be
with the marlies they might be able to do that is that not a compelling pitch yeah but that is if
somebody claims them that doesn't help well you know what's a more compelling deal though you can
do that you're gonna set him down yeah he's got a clear waivers at some point a more compelling
pitch is pay me right so for what for well okay you go get paid you take a you take a smaller
contract maybe he doesn't even take his qualifying maybe it's something less but the leafs keep him
on the roster they make him the promise we're going to keep you on the roster we're going to
carry three goalies it's not overly appealing to me but it's something that i wouldn't be surprised
I think he was included as a throw-in where they had to match the contracts in and out.
Because, you know, you got a 50 contract limit.
I think that's what it is.
Pending RFA.
I don't know.
Because I bet the Flyers probably didn't want to just let him walk.
But, yeah, I mean, there's a reason he was included.
And I can't imagine it was because the Leafs were desperate to get him.
This guy, if I'm not mistaken, he was on Team Sweden at the Four Nation face-off.
Yeah.
like so was sam montembeau yeah yeah so it was a oh my god here's
listen i'm being a naive little child about this there is a world where he's better
of course there is he was i mean it would be difficult to be worse
to be frank man if he if he got an 890 it'll improve his safe percentage by 20 points
yeah and 890 in this league is it's still just a little under but yeah this dude i don't steve
you can't you can't tell me you cannot sit there and actually rationalize to me that after the
playoff that atyamov has had or action off whatever is it double a as they're calling him
or and the regular season in the nhl that dennis hill to be had that you're gonna clog up the works
with sam arison right that's why i'm saying to him god listen dude here's the here's the thing
we'll keep you within the organization we're going to have you work with Curtis McAleen
right Curtis is good goalie coach really good goalie coach he's done pretty well yeah how about
we get your game back take the pressure off and then when you're ready you can either sign
somewhere else or we'll have an opportunity for you so how's this for a situation then
you have Hildeby you have Stollers if you want a third guy you can call up Akhtimov with no problem
and if you sign
Harrison and he clears
waivers, he's the guy playing when
Aktyomov's up.
That's what I'm saying. That was my whole point.
And Aktyomov is like 24.
At a certain point, Dan Milstein
is going to call him and be like, guys,
get him some NHL time. Is he
an RFA as well? I don't know.
No, he has
just signed an extension. He has an ELC
kicking in 900 grand
till 2029
30. No, it's not his
it's a second deal or oh right right i put up three fingers second deal his actual contract
yeah yeah uh it listen it's and it's nice to have that third round pick but like i was i was
talking about this it's the 86 or the 85th pick i can't remember um in recent years that has been
tommy novak it's been josh mahura 2018 it was lucas dostol yep nice it's nice to have the pick
but like that's not going to help you now unless you flip it the pick is good value yeah i don't
like i feel like it's decent that pick getting thrown in there is good value tender like wall
do they not need guys like that you get in the third round you're isn't like harry isn't harry
nancy a third rounder uh he was a fifth uh tyler hopkins was picked one pick off from this pick
last year he plays for guelph in the ohl and he looks pretty good yeah like there's a couple like
who's who's alan's client not nancy but the other miroslav alinka another guy i think he was fifth
like you need those guys so the leaf system doesn't have those guys we need that holenka's
pretty securely a top 10 prospect in the org he might be top five oh for sure for sure and he's
gonna play with the marlies next year oh yeah i think the deal like where i land on it where i
landed on it was i liked the return for that player i thought it was decent to get back a third
and a depth defenseman which could be something and then this goalie that you don't know what to
do with but i question whether the deal should have been made at this point i think the return
is good it's good value it's just is this the right decision for chica to make right now so
you would you have waited till like november yeah i think there was time and he didn't use it okay
but you can't get that pick right now for that the draft that's coming up so you didn't get that time
yeah um i guess that's what there's a little urgency because that pick was coming up but
i would have taken like i think it would have been fine to do a 27 third if that came this
deal was still available in uh training camp i'm caught between agreeing with you unconditionally
and the last gm never made trades yeah so i'm sort of like if this was inevitable fine i i know
i like that he seizes the initiative i do like that about john yeah very much i'll buy that um
now this is how you build your hockey team these days it's not going to be through free agency the
least don't have time to during the draft it's got to be through trades so point to you like
he's doing trades yep father's day this weekend oh it's wednesday at least as of this recording

um uh also lost in the new shuffle is the leafs have a huge tinnis uh they signed tinnis luke
kublar uh steve you did a video on it he's got his elc now tinnis probably is going to play in
sweden again this year so that slides to the next year i don't know i've heard that he's playing in
sweden that's why he's going to another year but what what did you you know he's a was a second
round pick last year and uh yes he was the last pick of the second round in 2025 he was the leaf's
first pick and people kind of wrote him off because if you look at his swedish stats they're
not great because he's playing in a men's league people don't understand european stats well no
and and that's you know what i'm okay with that that's okay people you guys are you not you're
not gonna tut tut them like you guys just don't understand the shl no i'm not going to but like
we do this every year that that's that's the tone of my voice we do this every year and you know
what yeah for the next 30 years that's what you're going to be doing that's what we're going to be
doing every year so what do we not understand about this i'm not working until i'm 60 i guess
you are 67 things have gone well absolutely 67 um no so he had eight goals in the shl this year
and everyone's gonna be like dude that sucks he was second on his team so not a great team
no but also at sweden and there's lower scoring games well much okay so what did you find out
from his cohort group because he did well obviously we saw him at the world championships
he had 10 10 11 points something like that he was good nine and i think it was six goals three
assists he had he had nearly as many goals at the world championships as he did all season in the
shl and he did well in the world juniors too yes uh with uh it was world juniors i think division
one yes because they were not in the yeah always not there yet um yeah because again it's norway
interesting story so he's slovenian born represents norway plays in sweden um he's a little bit of a
rat yep he's tall he's got a big frame uh which we can talk about um dogged played really like
listen short tournaments you don't want to get wrapped up in like tournament darlings or whatever
but you know it's i'm not comparing him to this player i'm not but like we saw your ice levkovsky
play against men in a short tournament we were like jesus this kid's really good and another
thing about tinus is across general managers and regimes he's something that the leafs organization
loves which is a late birthday draft pick yes they love a late birthday draft pick simeon
was one nick robertson was one and he's worked out decently um he's five months older than gavin
mckenna who wow who hasn't been drafted yet that's interesting if tinus luke kablar if he was
it's like a few days or a few weeks uh younger he'd be in this draft and with the stats he's had
can you imagine a draft eligible player well actually yes i can iver stenberg was great at
the world championship and everyone went maybe he's first if dinas luke kubalar does that on
norway which no offense yeah norwegian hockey fans have been three norwegian stanley cup champions
and two of them were this year no you know what's great adam those were danes oh those are danes
you're right like sorry that's very different it's a it's not a huge program right it's a
growing program they beat canada they got the bronze right yeah they sure did they sure did
right but can you imagine if he was just a few weeks younger he has the season that he has and
then like uh and then he also goes the world championship and has the tournament that he has
i don't think he goes 64th right so i'm i'm excited for this player he's pretty up there
in terms of their their their prospect cupboard in a cupboard that is it's it's bare now like
people are talking about how it's bare give it like a week and then they're gonna draft a bunch
of guys and you're gonna fall in love with all of those players very excited never heard of her
watch i'm so pumped and yeah oh i can't wait and and i can't wait to be such an arrogant prick and
be like i featured him in oh wow like a couple times and i think he's the best player ever
cannot wait to do that um tlk do you interesting player do you think he's an nhl center or does
he move he has like the body to be a center right he's six three two hundred but you think he goes
to the left wing maybe i hope they force it a center yeah because that was the mistake they made
with it's if you could point back to some of the original sins of like the matthews era
they they started developing willie at center and they abandoned it and uh they never mitch
marner never played a professional hockey game at center for the leafs never not once he played
more games on d then he did in the middle and one of those guys should have been a center
yeah one of them so you think they try and force it here i hope they do or at least he develops
into it develops into it they don't have a ton of guys you can't tell me even in the system you
can't tell me these guys can't figure it out i think marner i think marner specifically could
have figured it out if they had tried but babs didn't like martyrs small smallish he's six still
six feet tall babs didn't like smallish center so he wouldn't do it he's a very smart hockey
mind oh sorry to pause on the height thing for a sec i resent a little bit uh that people are
talking about how small emil andre is uh height i'm not sure is always the biggest advantage in
well it doesn't measure heart and it also doesn't measure heart thank you marcus he's he's five foot
nine yeah he's very short yeah he's 194 pounds yeah that is stocky well that's it's definitely
stocky it's it that is bang average in the nhl if not maybe on the heavier side of average name
the two canes uh uh defensemen that were around his height goss is baron walker 510 both of them
5'10 or 5'11.
Yeah.
Both lighter.
Yeah.
Right?
I think both lighter.
Yeah.
So I'd rather a heavier player.
Yep.
Can you give me a ceiling and floor for what you think Tinas will be?
Ceiling is probably Wayne Gretzky.
And basement is probably Brent Gretzky.
I have heard.
Do you have an honest one?
Brent or Keith?
Do you have an honest one?
Scott Wheeler said lower end of middle six.
Okay.
so like a center probably uh like a third line maybe a second line guy i'm trying to come up
with a name for you that's the height by the way that's the versatile floor is he doesn't make the
nhs right yeah the floor is he flames out yeah yeah it looks like he'll make it the second line
center yeah um is there a place i look like i'm trying to think of a center who's versatile and
a prick i'm saying i'm immediately going to minnesota like uh center is versatile on a prick
versatile on a prick and probably chirping in multiple languages he's not gonna be like super
defensive guy like he's not philip to know this is this is the problem that we have with players
in european leagues so like i was tut tutting but like i also cannot look at his numbers and be like
yeah here's what he's gonna be in the nhl right like how many times uh you should look up like
ov stats from the russian super league and people looked at him and they're like first overall pick
and i think he had like 18 goals yeah and this guy's going first overall 18 goals that's the
greatest goal scorer of all time it's the greatest goal scorer of all time now like literally um so
So I think he'll plot quite a few in the NHL,
but you need a pretty diverse bag these days to crack the shuffle.
That's interesting.
Let's talk, too, about this is just the last Leaf note,
and then we've got some other things to talk about.
I want people to be aware, because it's gotten lost in the shuffle, too,
that the other major card the Leafs have to play on the trade market
is Matthew Nice.
and it is real and it is legitimate that he could be traded and and you know the
the reality is everything we're hearing is that he is they are talking i don't know who they're
talking to specifically but they are oh man and so you know if you thought joseph wool was hard
to swallow oh my god well the word that keeps getting thrown around is analytics and i have
terrible news his are awful yeah no one talks about that they're awful his analytics are i'm
willing to look past them because of all the other stuff he does because of how young he is and
how big he is and the team stunk yeah i think the worst thing you can do is look at look too
deeply into individual performances on last year's team i agree because everybody underperformed
this happens all the time or like you look at oh yeah this guy was like the 12th forward on the
president's trophy winner like yeah his numbers are good this guy was the eighth defenseman on
the stanley cup yeah man right so i look at nize in a season where i don't know how healthy he was
throughout he pinged all around the lineup still put a point yep but was he outscoring the
opponent this is the problem but sorry i'm getting away from the original point this team is all
analytics all the time we know enough about the new regime now that you should believe them and
his numbers are awful i think they're going to trade this player and i think we're all going to
hate it a whole big bunch now they might they might get a good return steve might get a great
might even be great i tell you what i what i uh am not interested in for my mental health and heart
mm-hmm keith pelly kept talking about sabers prospects and habs prospects haji i think
trading matthew nyes within the division is an act of insanity because the team that was most
interested was the montreal canadians if you trade matthew nyes to the montreal canadians you might
as well fool the franchise like that's ridiculous you're gonna trade an actual humvee to your most
historic rival to run you over for the next 15 years no that's a disaster you've lost your mind
you've lost your entire mind i nope no i don't want to trade him at all let alone to jeff gorton
are you out of your mind gotta be smarter jeff gordon if he calls i'm hanging up he's a very
nice guy yeah uh watch the interview we did with him on on agent provocateur dude turned the he
was the one that created the boston bruins dynasty marshan chara and bergeron bergeron was coming on
who else was it lucic was involved with that he did it all in like a four month period and they're
like thanks but we prefer peter shirelli and this and then he built the rangers and when he left the
rangers they fell off a fucking cliff and now he's built the canadians you don't do deals with jeff
courtin yeah you don't you do not pick up his call i'll say i still we've talked about this
before with nice if he were to go to montreal i still don't think he cures what ails them
but yeah it's weird that they wouldn't get a center with whatever assets yeah but he's a
great player but the other thing is whatever he is matthew nice whether you you know you
ignore the analytics or you accept them i think there's a little balance right i think he is
somebody that basically nobody has seems to really embrace being a leaf yeah loves being a leaf
is making pretty solid money
for what he brings
and he was injured
most of last year.
Or playing hurt.
Playing hurt
and also playing in a shit system.
Right?
Still almost a point a game player
playing in a shit system.
Okay?
And like literally
incompetent system.
And he has no trade protection.
He is the thing
that if you're trying
to rebuild the blue line,
this is the guy.
Fire hydrants for fists.
Yeah.
And so...
Just beats the brakes off guys.
I keep going back to Simon Nemech because apparently New Jersey and him are very far apart.
He wants to make over $10 million from what we've heard.
And I mean, listen, I don't blame him.
I also want to make over $10 million.
You know what?
So do I.
You're right.
You know, I'd put that ask in.
I got it.
But I think what it is is like, okay, so then you trade from a technical strength to address a weakness.
The left side, he's playing left, right?
Mm-hmm.
So you've got...
Nemech?
No, no, no.
Nemech is a righty, isn't he?
Yes.
Yeah, yeah.
Oh, you mean Nize.
Nize.
He played both wings.
Plays both.
Because here's the thing.
I'm worried about that one side of the Leafs.
I want to have a look at the depth chart here
because if you bring McKenna in,
he's going to be a winger.
And I believe he's left.
Is he not?
Yes.
Yes.
So you got Cowan, Nize,
and then McKenna on the left side.
On the other side,
you have Nylander and probably Blank Space right now.
Would have been Domi, but...
Yeah.
so no Domi's the center
I'll kill you
I'll fight
I'll fight you to death
I think
I don't know Jim Hiller
really likes Domi at center Adam get ready
to learn Michelli's buddy
I'm telling you
all I'm saying
is Michelli has a spot in that lineup you're
working it out yeah that's a heavy left
side but none of those
guys are like Mitch Marner
who could drive his own line.
The Leafs never let him.
But like a winger driving their own line.
He never did, though.
He never did.
Nye's is not going to do that.
Cowan's too young.
McKenna's too young.
So if you're going to go left wing in the draft
and we assume McKenna will be on this team,
well...
So you think McKenna might make Nye's
a little more expendable?
Listen, you're not going to have a perfect hockey team
in a cap era.
Unless you're the Hurricanes.
Unless you're the Hurricanes,
which is as close to perfect as you can get yeah and people are so upset about it yeah they are
so upset about it so you need to address 2c right you don't like because you're out on john i'm no
i'm i'm tovaris either here's what i think they can do i think just see tovaris yeah address c
you could address c i think bo grew is their fourth line center next year uh i think if scott
lotten's available you look at that sure but i think tovaris in the top six moving over to the
wing if you've traded nice that gets you big hopefully big defenseman maybe two that you need
not i'm not talking about big physically i'm talking about puck movers who are top end
see maybe you get like a yeah this guy kind of stinks but he's a good six seven guy and whoa
wow defenseman and then you go and you get vinny trochek somehow
because they're interested in a star wars ass somehow palpatine return plan is that
I think one problem with Tavares on the right side is he's a left shot.
And they already have so many problems with the amount of left shots they have on the roster.
Okay, so you play Tavares on left wing maybe?
Or do you just play him as third line center?
Because I like him there too.
I think you can still play center.
He's too good.
Yeah.
But is he?
But okay.
Okay, I get that he's too good.
He is.
Guys, in the playoffs, two years ago, he looked slow.
You got to remember that we're building for the playoffs and 82 games of John Tavares.
and he third line center and he just wins you face off that's one of he wins you face offs and
gets you depth scoring which you've never had and you get young guys coming in bill jordan stall in
the aggregate exactly with more scoring like why not that that gives john tavara sheltered minutes
on the third line where he can tear it up play with young guys maybe he makes dakota joshua a
much stronger player again i hope i i like him i don't know why i like him more than everyone else
apparently i don't think anybody has a problem with that because if john tavar is on the 3c
that means you went out and got a 2c that's what i'm saying brooksie well but like who is that
not necessarily just out there and the flyers have any other players no one's ever heard of
that they could trade or if it's nice do you trade him for the second line center that you need who's
who's like uh you know like not dylan larkin because he doesn't want to come to canada
but someone who is very very good like that and then do you go back up the brinks truck for darren
radish because darren radish can be had for giving up no assets right the thing about acquiring a 2c
and trading knives is you're trying to do that perfect dance where you're going after a player
who's nhl ready but you're sending a nhl ready player to this team that doesn't want to take
anything off their roster because they're trying to contend and acquire matthew yeah and who's got
too many centers that they're like i gotta get rid of exactly yeah man you're right don't put
center on toronto please get rid of him yeah i love her too buttery except for new york
fucking new york that is that's what the money's for like that's your job to go do it it's just
where's the trading partner yeah yeah um anyway so that's the that those are the thoughts uh now
let's talk about hockey night in canada hockey night in canada rip uh kevin shea who was
formerly was the leafs he's now retired but he was the former leafs historian official historian
very nice guy uh the first hockey broadcast on radio took place february 8th 1923 with norm
albert handling the third period uh they only just did the third period
um hockey night in canada the television broadcast um 1952 hockey night in canada title
was retained for both television and radio cbc aired saturday night hockey night in canada
a broadcast until 1965 cbc aired uh the television broadcasts obviously more recently um it's been a
an enormous run and by the way the three stars comes from the three stars on the original eso
logo which used to be called imperial oil wow which is hilarious that started with hockey night
in canada 74 years cbc has been carrying this now there has been a lot of let me just say this
idiotic stupid shit said about this since the press release came out yesterday and it's from
people who are unfortunately in the media who don't understand how the business they're in works
okay somebody actually tweeted yesterday private equity ruined hockey night canada and i was like
okay let's take a step back here let me tell you about the arrangement that was instituted 12 years
ago when sports net bought the rights when sports net bought the rights pretty unorthodox they
bought those rights in an era where a lot of people still didn't have apps on their phones
and so and older people and so sports net said and this was smart okay i've bought all the hockey
games all the national games are mine i'm going to call it the cbc who used to run hockey night
in canada i'm up until this last season and say how about we continue okay not only that we're
going to broadcast it out of your building because the first four or five years they broadcasted it
at the top floor at cbc i think it was huge uh 10th floor huge stage it was crazy massive studio
and the reason they did that was because hockey night in canada for free if you have a television
set in canada with bunny ears you can pick it up over the air for free everywhere with the way the
internet has gone in the last 12 years everybody's got the internet and everybody therefore has
access to buying a cable package or an app subscription you know cbc also used to just
air the games online like they used to they still do they still do or free well yeah it's over but
the the thing is is that sports net's like hey why would we give this away for free anymore
everybody's got access to it we want them to watch our ads we want them to pay for the subscription
and that's what's happening hockey so people are like oh f the cbc how could they do this
buddy cbc only provided the airtime they got no money from it and the only thing they were given
was i think 60 seconds in promo every hour to promote their podcast or their baking shows or
whatever they have going on canada reads canada reads that were you promoted on that actually
no i don't i don't know regardless it wouldn't have been your face i'll tell you that a sports
net would not have had that no uh but no so so this is the thing when people are like oh cbc
screw the cbc whatever like cbc has not been involved in hockey nhl hockey directly for 12
years these are not cbc people ron mcclain came over from cbc added as did elliot friedman
but these are not cbc people this is not a cbc broadcast it's a sports net broadcast
and people are like man cbc needs to be studied for the downfall of hockey night in canada and
how bad it is well that is whether you think it's good or you think it's bad yeah that's a sports
net production it always was they sold the ads they made the money they lost the money they paid
the people they did whatever it was they did so i want to be clear about that one of the 12
pull string boring things that people say these days blank needs to be studied so i wanted to say
this what is sad about this is that it's not going to be available for free yep and sports is becoming
something where people are getting priced out not only of going to the games which happened
years ago in toronto especially but of paying for the package like i was bitching about flow
sports being 30 a month i bitched about sports net being 30 a month back when it was it's now
like 50 if you want the the whole package of to actually watch the games and so this is the end
of an unbelievable run now guys let's be honest there's been a lot of change in the media industry
are we are we upset that hockey night in canada no longer runs on the radio i mean that was gone
40 years ago right we don't we don't really care this change was going to happen it needs to happen
i don't love that you're going to have to pay a fortune to watch it because i think it will cut
more and more people out of our national half or pastime which is already an issue this is this is
what what i've always been so interested in in wow so interested in every year
one saturday night per year the largest english language hockey game in this country is played
and it's the toronto maple east versus the vancouver canucks and they take it off cbc and
they put it on sports now because they want you to buy that game yes and my thought was always
i think they're overestimating how many people are gonna be like oh shoot better buy the game
tonight and i think a lot of people are like i'm i'm just not gonna watch the game i'll just do
something else i think one of the reasons like that hockey is what it is in this country is that
for 70 plus years on Saturday night,
whether you could afford it or not,
you could watch the biggest hockey game
that was aired on that day.
Yep, yep.
And you could watch it online
up until this past season on cbc.ca.
You could watch it over the air.
If you had antennas,
you could watch it as just a regular channel
if you had cable or satellite
because it wasn't a premium channel.
It comes with your basic package of everything.
And I feel like that was so important to the country
in growing the game into what it is hockey night in canada was a huge reason for that and it is i
think it's really sad that it's being taken away i you know oh you don't understand business i don't
think you understand culture or society or how anything works yeah business is getting in the way
of this tradition yeah there are a lot of things that are taxpayer funded which is what a lot of
people have a problem with with cbc um but like you get stuff yeah you get stuff for that you get
a road because you paid your taxes yeah it's not simply a uh license to here take my money yeah
you get shit for it and cbc had a mandate to provide certain entertainment to canadians
canadian produce canadian everything and that's what they did for a very long time until it was
bought up from under them and now you gotta fucking pay for it and i don't think that you're
wrong in saying some people will just opt out because if somebody weekly was like i don't pay
for sports net or tsn or whatever and i just watched the saturday game that's the only hockey
game i watch i can see that person just being like oh i'll watch something else or watch some
other sport or whatever else is free on cbc if that's all they had so i definitely think you're
gonna lose some hockey or you get a few people still on the seven seat oh yeah or that no
definitely you can't go online at all and just watch every nhl game for free i also want to say
that i think that i don't know if people are prepared for this because i don't think and you
shouldn't have to prepare for this i'm like it's not me going like i'm not trying to steve you on
the you don't understand the swedish league uh i i'm just joking buddy but what i'm trying to say
is like they doubled the price of what they paid for the nhl rights i don't care how but how i know
you don't care but you will care because you're paying for it who else is going to pay for it
you're paying for it and your subscription will reflect the price that rogers paid yeah and now
are they going to lease out a certain the rumor is amazon's in on one night tsn's in on another
So it won't all be Sportsnet broadcast because I think Sportsnet wants to pare down on the amount of people it has.
The rumor is, too, I don't know how true this is, that a lot of the on-air staff and a lot of the producers have contracts that ended at the end of this deal.
But the umbrage I take with that is I know somebody that went through a negotiation with them and didn't end up going through with it.
But what happened was they actually wanted to sign that person two years after the deal ended.
so they wouldn't if they lost the rights they wouldn't go to another network oh that's what
they did to me okay my initial um my uh contract that i quit from um there was an extension it
would have gone a year it would have gone to next year yeah so i i've i've heard i know people are
out there going oh well it's you know armageddon for this on air staff i actually don't know that
that's the case and and i think that was not how they were acting that was a couple of regimes ago
But if those contracts were signed three, four years ago, then that's what it was.
So you're backing me up on that.
My thing is this.
I think Rodgers wants to do one or two nights.
I think Amazon wants one.
And I think TSN wants one.
And it's coming to an amicable price on this.
But the reality is Rodgers owns them all.
TSN and Amazon will lease the games in an ideal scenario.
And the rest of the costs will be put on to us and to advertisers.
Yeah.
And Sportsnet and Rodgers have got to pay all that money.
and I'm going to opt out of that experience
of giving you money so you can pay for it.
That's your problem.
I don't care that you paid $11.2 billion.
I'm not going to give you my money
because I'm going to do something else with it.
I think there's a lot of people that feel that way.
You're charging me too much.
And no one listening to this show,
I think, is going to do that, right?
Like, because you're all hardcore hockey fans.
Yeah, you can't relate to that,
which I totally understand.
But I'm letting you know,
like, a lot of people are just not going to watch the games.
Yeah.
It's, it's no longer going to be a part of their lives.
They're going to watch something else.
They're going to get into something else.
They're going to enroll their kids and other shit.
Like kids, like I'm getting to see it now.
Like they, they want to play the thing that they watch.
Right.
Like, uh, the Jays are hot right now.
I thought Leo was going to be a soccer kid.
Cause he's surrounded by it in our family.
Jays are hot.
Last summer he goes, I want to play baseball.
We didn't force it on him.
We were like, oh, all right.
You forced hockey on him.
I guess, yeah.
Yeah, you did.
You're going to sign him up four times a week.
If he watches this in the future, I sincerely apologize.
But the baseball, that was his own thing.
That was his own thing.
You know, a lot of kids are probably going to watch the World Cup right here.
This is part of the reason why I think the NHL going to the Olympics is such an important thing.
And it was such a drag on the sport that, like, okay.
so you were locked out a bunch of times so you're you're just not playing games and no one's watching
you at all you're not on the international stage in a way that's relevant like no wonder okay the
ratings are going up the cap is going up okay okay okay let's that looks impressive until you look at
what's going on in the other sports and then you still look like the rinky-dink mickey mouse
operation you are well hold on let's before we go too far down that road something that i think is
really important in this people you know in the states might be like why am i listening to this
segment blah blah blah here's the thing um if you watch hockey in the states you're watching
on espn or tnt except for the games where they're on abc and when they're on abc which is you know
owned by the same company disney uh as uh espn what happens to the ratings tell me they triple
yeah because cable because it's cable it's not specialty and that is sports net's gonna have to
weigh that, right? Hey, we're a specialty channel. And really, City TV, as much as I loved my time
there, was always a collection of local channels that fed into and used the same brand. It was not
what Global and CTV were, which were truly national networks with global products or with local
products. That was CTV and Global. City TV was like, we're hyper-local, hyper-local, hyper-local.
They really didn't have a national newscast for a long, long time.
Like it was not, not the same.
And that's what Rogers owns.
So again, you know, I'm looking at this and I'm going, okay, I, I, this is not going to
be next year.
Oh my God.
Ratings Armageddon.
No.
And the sports in an excellent place in terms of its entertainment value, especially going
head to head with the NBA, which is kind of boring in the regular season.
Great in the playoffs, still kind of boring in the regular season, but access to it's
going to have to be something that Rogers has to grapple with.
and i don't know uh you know tsn is also a specialty channel but bell doesn't own those
rights amazon a lot of people have amazon that might be the most accessible game uh and maybe
amazon if they well because everybody's got prime no like that's that's the least successful you
think so yeah that's an internet only thing i guess i i just look at amazon i'm like well
like a lot of people at prime like no no you can shop and watch city tv is rogers's answer to an
over the air channel because it is available over the air so and games did air on city tv
as recently as this season they did so i would imagine some secondary games on whatever nights
they want to will air on there just to keep that up but the majority of them are going to sports
net and just to note the hockey night in canada copyright is owned by cbc so you can expect a
sub licensing sub licensing deal not to be done with rogers to get that done they're keeping it
Because from the people from CBC, after this all came out, it sounds like they're going to keep that and use it in some other way.
I think it's PWH.
For PWH all games or whatever they want to do with that name, but they're not going to give it over to Rodgers.
So you can expect the name of everything Rodgers does to completely change and to have a completely new studio show.
And CBC is going to go with on Saturday's Olympic sport coverage.
So they're going to build up to the L.A. games and the French out games with programming on Saturdays.
Right. That's what they're going to pivot. And good for them. And CBC is not there to make a profit. Right.
It's there to it's there to break even and be a public service. And I don't even think it breaks even anymore.
Used to used to actually be profitable. But advertising's changed a lot.
I think that I think the thing is with with where the CBC is going to go with this hockey night in Canada might go to a PWHL game, which would be a great boon for them.
and people are like,
I don't know what the CBC
is going to do.
They're going to try to compete
with Saturday Night Hockey.
I don't think so.
But there will be
going to have to do something else.
But what it does mean
is the NHL's market
is fractured a little bit more.
Yeah.
Right.
When that when Sportsnet
had it on CBC,
it meant CBC
couldn't run anything else.
Yeah.
Somebody might like
watching sprinting or swimming
or whatever.
Because I can watch it for free.
And the other one
cost me $30 a month.
Yep.
So anyway,
I just thought we'd,
you know,
add a little note to that.
And Steve,
you used to work at Hockey Night
in canada behind the scenes so a little bit bittersweet huh yeah i worked there when um
uh i worked at cbc when the deal was announced and people were crushed yeah and i was like oh
my god i'm screwed like i'm never gonna get into sports net and then i got there and
a lot of people ended up making the jump uh it's sad it's sad you know what was sad
is i wanted to work at hockey night in canada my like whole child childhood and i had to make
peace with the fact a few years ago that my childhood dream was no longer the thing i wanted
i mean that's how i felt about radio yeah that was my childhood dream to be a morning show host
in toronto and then it wasn't yeah and then you kind of go okay well what am i gonna do with
myself now and it didn't it didn't mean i wasn't excited to do what was next but i was kind of
mourning the thing that i wanted to do and built toward of course i can relate to that completely
you know i get you on that a couple of last things here first off uh not surprising news
But Ryan Craig has been named coach of the Vegas Golden Knights.
He had been coaching Henderson, the Silver Knights, for a long time.
Oh, I've been there.
Yeah.
Marlies are one win away from the Calder Cup, which means nothing.
But Artur Aktyamov said after the game yesterday, Leaf fans will love this.
I feel nothing.
We need one more win.
I love it.
He shut him out.
And Easton Cowan had the one and only goal.
And credit to Sportsnet.
They played it.
And it was great.
Sean McKenzie was on the broadcast.
I watched it on Flow Sports.
yeah you watched on flow i did i watched it on sports net because i will only pay overpay for
one service damn it um uh jesse blake because of the john tortorella stuff we need to give you the
floor very quickly before we go here for us to kiss it uh you were right about john tortorella
being yeah so please can yes i i did i did predict that uh vegas would move on from him
after the stanley cup final uh which you both poo-pooed but that just means that adams got two
uh correct takes the last couple this last week or so i've got one and steve's got zero yeah so
steve you're winless we're a hot start to the season and i spilled water all over the desk uh
what do you say about your poor performance yeah well you know i'm just gonna try to give it a
hundred percent ten ten percent flush it keep it in the room and uh keep it going uh babcock will
likely be uh the next coach of the Oilers um it looks like whatever happened nobody wants to talk
about it anymore so the investigation will finish although the investigation is open and hilariously
Chris McFarlane traded for a guy he had Ross uh Colton who I was hoping would come to the Leafs
uh was traded to the Predators and uh there was really no place for him in the lineup anymore and
they were kind of capped out so it kind of makes sense that's a good get for the Preds Colorado
Toronto gets two picks and they have like none.
So that's good for them.
And they get a contract off their books.
Nashville gets a decent player and that's good because they need more.
And let's wrap it up there.
Yep.
We will be back on Friday, but I'm sure we'll be back before then with more videos on what the Leafs and other people are doing.
It just seems like we're going to be drinking for the fire hose.
What's going to be tomorrow?
Nice trade or Riley trade?
I think they do Riley first, don't you?
Austin?
If you want to hold on.
