anything at all i was here uh a little bit later last night i watched the first two periods from
sport check at maple leaf square uh jesse was inside the arena steve was in a pit of despair
in the blue room which honestly it is it is always it always has been a pit of despair
from his childhood bedroom to the to the the little closet in oshawa to now this the bigger
closet under the stairs in ajax um but i want to say hi to another steve uh there was a man who
came in and he said well you've got quite the view there and i said yeah it helps that we're you know
we're working or whatever and he said i bet you don't know what this jersey is and he points down
at his jersey and it's purple and i said that looks like a cincinnati cyclones jersey and he's
like you do know it and i said yeah and i said are you from cincinnati he said yeah i drove up here
tonight just to be here for maple leaf square he said i he said they did evacuate it but he's like
i drove all the way up from cincinnati because i've been a cyclones fan forever and since the
Leafs are affiliated with them that's their ECHL team I wanted to come and root on the Leafs so I
would like to and I told Steve about the show I don't think he knew uh about the Steve Dangle
podcast so I promised him a little shout out and I wanted to shout him out and anybody else who
might be Cincinnati Cyclone fans that's very kind yeah isn't that great he was he was really cool
really he had to watch that he had to watch he drove all the way north to get back into the
square because they evacuated and let people back I think he uh so they were starting to when I
talked to him and he was just like you know what i might just go find a bar oh okay and and i don't
blame him because it's you know it was wet and that sort of thing you want to shout out the
listener who also stopped by and brought a snack megan megan yeah megan brought us some like gummy
bears and some she brought us some nut free chocolate because chocolate clusters you never
know when you know somebody could be nut free thank you yeah uh we appreciate that steve sounds
like yeah he's been smoking several cigarettes i don't know why he's uh that's how he sounds
that's how he sounds and he's a sad boy sad boy i heard your voice uh this morning when i was
watching lfr and i was like oh it's gonna be raspy for today it was different from the beginning of
the video to the end yeah oh yeah 100 so listen i want you to know that sport check is your
destination to gear up for playoff season but also to cry a little uh and i don't know if we're
going to be crying today i definitely think there'll be some frustration and i want to i want
to start with um the toronto maple leafs is that a surprise to anybody the toronto maple leafs i
think it's apt maddie can you go to jesse please oh you know you see what's jesse wearing yeah
listening audience tell tell us jesse is wearing sdpn golf shirt yeah which i think is apropos
after game five which you can find at sdpn shop.ca that's right sdpn golf your your number
one spot for golf where it's that season no last night the least lost four straight games you know
that's right yeah oh don't you dare don't you start with me they're gone don't you start with
me we cannot pretend that this is not how this always goes now i hope you've seen steve's lfr
if you have not it's spectacular i hope you saw the watch along last night drew even super cut
together a uh a couple of moments of steve freaking out just threw it up on the on the
youtube channel and senators fans it's going viral in ottawa right now viral it was really good of
him and there was a quote this morning that i thought you guys would find interesting and we
can come back to this series but it is from a different series carolina hurricanes came back
from a 3-0 deficit won the game in overtime they're on to the second round and what did
rod brindamore tell the press after the game i don't know he said i didn't want to get back on
that plane to Newark.
I didn't want to get back on that
plane to Newark. Isn't that a
Porter commercial?
You fly
from the island airport to Newark.
That's the Porter commercial.
Yeah, 100%. And Rob
is like, you know what, Porter?
At Porter, you get your free steam whistle.
You don't have to fly like a poor person.
And you can fly directly from the island
to Newark. By the way, they're right about
everything in those commercials.
Flying Porter is infinitely better than Flying Pearson.
So Rod Brindamore didn't want to get on the plane.
Apparently, the Leafs did.
And it wasn't that the Leafs lost.
If you are watching this series from afar, you're not a fan,
or you're coming in for the Steve Dangle meltdown or whatever it is,
why ever you're here,
it's important to understand that it is not that they lost it is important to understand that it is
not that it's 3-2 in the series and we're overreacting it is how it's always how if they
went to overtime again and lost i wouldn't have had near the reaction i did near the reaction
but there are always signs and in games like this we have seen this group disappear time and time
and time again. There is no way to forgive what we've seen in the past and forget what we've seen
in the past unless there's some winning, unless the whole thing changes, right? If they go on a
run this year, hey, all's forgiven. That's great. This is what it took you to get there. I wish it
hadn't taken you so long, but you got there. But what we saw last night is what we have seen.
we've seen this movie and trust your eyes you've seen this movie and so that is where
the inevitable frustration this morning and last night from leaf fans comes off and and listen i'm
gonna i'm gonna i'm gonna give you guys some cool stats hey mitch martyr's got seven points in five
games this series neil andrews got six and five matthews has got six and five uh tavaris has got
five and five guys good i was looking for something to wipe my ass with guys kind of you
These guys have showed up.
They've showed up.
You can't just deliver stats for the sarcasm.
Why can't I?
They showed up, Jesse.
These guys have been there.
Why can't we get depth goals from Oliver Ekman-Larsen
and Simone Benoit and Max Domi?
And more defensive goals from Morgan Rielly.
Why can't we have more depth scoring?
Why has it always got to be on the core four?
Shouldn't we de-emphasize them?
Is Nye's part of the core four?
I think he will be this summer.
He will be this summer.
Nize is on my list of five or six men who I'd like to see on the Leafs next year
if they lose this series.
Stallers, Tanev, Nize.
What are your other two?
Carlo.
Carlo, yeah.
Lawton.
Well, both goalies can stay.
Not Matty?
Not Austin Matthews?
No.
No?
No, no.
You trade Austin.
no they lose this series trade austin yeah you want any one of those three back
if they lose this series they might ask for a trade honestly if they lose the series yeah
good if they if they lose losing is a whole other thing them them winning in six or winning in seven
it's like that's okay if they lose the series you might as well trade off well okay like 60 69 goals
in a regular season is meaningless if you're losing this series i i got a ton of crap um and
people were like well this age like milk um for my reaction to their loss in game four because i was
like maybe hockey's not for you why can't you just treat this team like a normal team nope
you lost permission last night you lost permission to be taken seriously like a normal team
you lost all credibility you lost all ability for anyone to look at you
like something that isn't a sideshow at the circus do you care that it's been one bad loss
this entire playoff no no you don't care about that i don't give a flying it's when it happens
and it's how it happens.
I lost 4-0 on home ice in an elimination game.
So it doesn't matter that they just lost the games in a bad order?
Not even kind of.
Because if this is game one, you have the freakout,
and then let's say they take four of the next three,
or three of the next four.
Sorry, I just said it backwards.
And then it's 3-2.
It's when.
It's when they're a team on the brink.
If I were 6'8", I'd be looking down at you.
Yeah.
But that's not how life is.
You're upset at the order of things.
Jesse, the order of things is the story of this team.
For years, people have gone, yeah, but look at Marner's points
and look at Nylander's points and look at Matthews.
I'm being gaslit.
I'm actually being gaslighted.
A goal away in 21.
Is it gaslighted or gaslit?
Gaslit.
I think gaslit.
A goal away in 21, goal away in 22, goal away in 23, goal away in 21.
Oh, they're right there.
Yeah.
Knock, knock, knock it on heavens.
the point of the point of people bringing up those points and like the order of those points is
like we're starting to get the real stats of like this is ghastly and the sports net stats like they
were just feasting off the tears all night long on twitter if anybody's following along with that
because they just kept running out the the core four stats in in this era and how long it's been
when they've delivered in those elimination games.
It's when you're specifying the specific games,
five through seven, over the last eight years.
Those numbers are truly shocking.
Can I read one?
No, I'm teeing it up to go through them if you can, Adam.
Do it.
So the record, obviously, we know one in 12, right?
So we know that.
Goals four.
Isn't it one in 13?
Yeah, it's one in 13.
Oh, one in 13.
So that's got that wrong.
No, no, it's worse.
Awesome.
Oh, that's cool.
uh oh i like it when it's worse uh goals 23 goals against 48 go to hell power play since this is
since 2018 power play one for 31 fuck you too uh specify when though one for 31 in the power play
in potential series clinchers since 2018 that's the important thing because they didn't have a
series clincher in 2017 you're boiling it down to these clinching games you get these numbers
where it's one for 30 and who's the one the one is a player who's been retired for several years
is that marlo it was patrick marlo in the opening minute of game 7 of 2018 he had two goals in that
game jake gardner slapped it from the blue line and marlo tipped it on its way in and no one
remembers you know why because jake gardner uh turned into an actual like soda can like bb gun
fodder in your backyard
in the third period.
The Leafs took a third period lead
Was it not 4-3 and they lost
7-4? It was 4-3 after Kaepernick scored
that sick short-handed goal
and they allowed four goals in the third
period. You suck, you stink. The next
year, you have a chance
to finish off Boston in Game 6 on home ice.
You don't do it. Lose Game 5 and
Game 7. You suck, you stink.
Shutout losses, by the way,
in those one for 13.
Two.
Columbus was the other one.
Yeah.
Nearly Montreal, but Nylander threw on his cape with about 90 seconds left,
and he said, not today.
Can I make you guys feel better?
No.
The Senators have never won a game seven.
It doesn't apply.
Which is why I think it would be perfect to do it right now.
They're playing the Leafs.
Yeah, exactly.
They're playing the Leafs.
Your team's haunting stats are inapplicable against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Yes.
Maple Leafs in potential series clinching game since 18.
Power play goals, one.
Shorthanded goals allowed, two.
you're garbage yeah that one's your that's absolute garbage how do you want any one of
these people back adam do you think steve was a little ahead of himself in the lfr when he started
breaking down who should be returning this off yes i do think he was ahead of himself on that
but i think that's emotion well i think that's allowed why not leo what's at stake well i i and
i agree with that i i don't know if they're not even up for elimination yeah when you went into
Well, I would keep this guy and I wouldn't keep that guy.
I was like, okay, well, that's – I get what he –
and I have those thoughts and feelings.
Kids, it's okay to be a visionary.
Yeah.
It's okay.
But then if they lose in game seven,
the only thing you're going to have left is,
well, I'm going to repeat the segment that I did two games ago, right?
We got sent a tweet today.
It was Matthews copying Brady Kachuk.
After that game five loss, he said to all the fans at Scotiabank Arena,
we'll be back here.
Oh, that's brutal.
Which is an unreal jerk.
That's mean.
If I was a Sens fan, I would have called off work today.
Are you kidding me?
How am I going to get anything done?
Are you joking me?
Are you joking me?
Yeah.
I'm not going to get...
Hey, boss, I'm going to be the most useful...
I have a phone right here.
Why didn't I pick that up?
I'm going to be the most useless person at this company.
I'm simply too happy.
I'm simply too happy.
I uh it's so so the Leafs are garbage uh they had a first period power play that was a gift
and Matthew Nyes who's been pretty great in this series gets a penalty midway through they had five
shots in 70 seconds they score there how do you how do you honestly what's he doing with the slash
there I I looked at that I was like that is real stupid yeah he's trying to take the puck and he
god it's too too aggressive it's a like i don't i don't see it as a decision really i think it's
just one of those things like you know how many stick battles the stick doesn't break and there's
no call yeah of course you know but when it breaks there's a call when it breaks well here's the
here's the point though don't break it on the power play don't break it on the power play later
on in the period i felt like the leafs had some good momentum morgan riley cross-checked shabbat
from behind uh that penalty that they had to kill i think they were they were rolling before that
and i think that that really killed a lot of momentum too good kill good kill but killed
momentum yeah and then beyond that you know beginning of the it was at the beginning of
the second period that the that the shabbat goal went in yeah it was sometime 346 into the second
so the shabbat goal goal goes in and i thought well shit kind of wish that you'd have a save on
that one yes um but i back-to-back goals he's allowed yeah but i'm a defenseman i look at it
and i go okay it's one goal but the problem was one goal in this game the way the senators played
it game winning goal felt insurmountable and it and i don't even know if it was just the senators
guys what i what i thought i saw what i felt in the moment was really sloppy leafs passes
I saw five or six passes to John Tavares that he couldn't handle.
I saw, and it might not be all John's fault.
Like, it might just be they're too hard, they're off target.
William Nylander was horrible.
That's probably the worst game he's played all year.
He was horrible.
Marner was horrible.
Matthews was horrible.
They were, all three of those guys were absolutely horrible.
Tavares wasn't bad.
Nyes took a bad penalty.
Other than that, I thought he was good.
um out in terms of the important forwards Matthews Marner and Nylander were all
who we've come to expect them to be I mean like that's not even Nylander's reputation
and uh I mean he's he's got a reputation of the three of them he's the playoff those guys stink
no like I know exactly what plays you're talking about and they're making passes and they're off
target and they're bobbling the puck and like these guys are terrified
i know i'm ahead of myself shanehan should be unhirable if they lose the series
like forget not back we already know he's not back he should be he's gonna go persona non grata
that's so far yeah like that's like four days in the future yeah like calm man this i mean these
last two weeks i i can't i don't even know what day it is right now if we could if we can just
go back a little just to defend anthony stallers adam i think you're very wrong on you need to
save there uh he didn't see that puck he was screened he he can't make a save if he can't
see the puck that's on the leafs who completely blocked out their own goaltender and allowed
brady kachuk just like this anderson well nobody's yeah nobody's there nobody's there i don't think
that's on the goaltender at all i think he had a good game uh and this goal isn't on him and
he's on him who's on him in that it's a lefty who who's on what who is supposed to be on kachuk
who's the kachuk that's mccabe i also think he didn't have a great night no mccabe matthews is
on his man there tanev's kind of moving over and kachuk's just sitting right in front of the
goaltender which you can't have and um brube and the guys talk about it too just too many
sends in front like you're not helping stallers in this way and kachuk's screening him he does
a beautiful job and mccabe sliding over to try and get kachuk blocks his own goaltender too and
just goes right in it's a cni shot like beautiful shot from the blue line well it's two capable guys
right like this is the thing with the playoffs you look at that sense third pair that i don't
think has been bad but like they don't even matter no you have sanderson and shabbat add to that
zoob and jensen they're both pretty good i thought clevin was good last night i was like man clevin
was looking really good in terms of like and zoob is man he's he's he's good for them all the the
Settins have a bunch of players who I knew would be good.
So, like, I'm not as surprised by them.
But the two that have stood out to me the most are Pinto and Clevin.
Cool.
Now the future of your left side is Sanderson, Shabbat, and Clevin.
Better beat them now.
I'm looking at the game.
So the passes were bad.
What I also felt, guys, was the Leafs were not doing any of the things
that allowed them to score earlier on in the game.
So games one through three, if you even game four,
you look at the goals that they get, what do they do?
Like the sign held up in the arena last night with your face on it.
Go to the net.
I was sad you didn't give them a shout out in the LFR.
I forgot.
Oh, okay.
I'm sorry.
I gave them a shout out on Twitter and on the stream.
They were on the stream.
But I assume they know that from the LFR.
So I was like, I hope they know that Steve saw it.
Oh, crap.
Yeah, way to go.
Okay, well, hopefully you know it from this.
They probably know.
Man, but what if they don't watch this?
Yeah, that's what I was thinking.
Wow.
Majority of people are on Twitter.
Damn.
And they're in the arena, so they're not watching the stream.
Hey, Jesse.
So how would they ever know?
Do you think that they big wheel?
Is Steve big wheeling this person?
A little bit.
Wow.
Just unappreciative is what I would say.
Do you know what?
I don't appreciate.
Two-time bestseller.
Don't need to shout out the fans anymore.
Jesse, I don't appreciate that point made by, um, what's his name?
I don't remember.
I'm regularly referred to as, hey, you're Steve Dangle's friend.
Oh, no.
It's a nice change from, hey, you're Marilyn Dennis' kid.
are both incorrect uh no no they're not they're factually true actually true yes that's okay
one one time start with facts that reminds me one time remember the community center dance
yeah of course um so grade eight this was a big deal all the 13 14 year olds go to the community
center everybody stinks of axe everyone reeks of axe this was 2002 so this is like the height of
axe and um and this really pretty girl a couple really pretty girls walk up to me and i was like
oh my god because i wasn't used to that and i had this friend named antoine and they go uh
hey are you friends with antoine i go yeah they're like can you introduce
i was like yeah i can i can do that for you oh i like that that's funny that is very very he was
very handsome man he was a very handsome young it's it's we were on the track team together
i'll never forgive him it's a it's a it's a thing that like uh i tweeted out i just tweeted out
straight up a picture of pierre polly of last night because that's how it felt like it's like
the leafs are like literally i know here comes another blue and white team blowing a lead um
and i'm i'm looking at the the way that this played all right dad and yeah i am a dad i'm 37
you know what no no i'm 37 i'm a six-year-old of course i'm a dad i don't care what end of
the political spectrum you're on we can finally enjoy hockey without those i know holy shit any
ad any of the policies it's been a long year yeah the provincial election and the federal oh my god
ontario yeah get off my tv ollie fuck off um i'm just i'm looking at this and i'm going okay so
i'm thinking for the game for the third period okay this is what i thought this is how i psyched
myself up as i left sport check at maple leaf square got in my car drove home i'm like they
they're gonna turn it on for the third period because we talked about in the first few games
how they were able to kind of park the bus and then they were able to go nope we're turning it
on now it was a one goal game in the third oh yeah one goal game in the third until almost
halfway through and they get a power play they get a power play a gift of a ridley grigg is the
dumbest sin. Easily.
Nick Cousins is on his team.
Ridley Gregg is the second dumbest sin.
And, I mean,
Jesse, it's Nick Cousins. He's probably getting
fined today, by the way. He might even get suspended.
For what? At the end of the game, when
he was exchanging
punches with Scott Lawton, the
ref or the linesman, whoever it was, punched him right in the
face. Cousins punched
the... Cousins punched him right in the face. I missed that.
He's an idiot. Ridley
Gregg, there were going to be
no more penalties in that game. None.
It was two power plays each.
None.
We're done here.
He then, Jesse, you're a WWE fan.
Do you remember Carlito?
Yes.
Do you remember his finishing move, the backstabber?
No.
He would grab the guy around the neck from behind, drag them to the ice.
He puts the two knees on it.
I do remember.
Two knees into the back.
That's what he gave to Marner.
You idiot.
You stupid idiot.
And they called that.
You moron.
They were never going to call another penalty for the rest of the game.
and that idiot goes to the box.
That was a good finishing move.
It was a good finishing move.
And it was a good pop, really sellable.
Anyway, so he was in the box for the penalty in the first period
that was cut short because of the nice penalty.
Elise had five shots in 70 seconds.
He's a penalty killer.
I'm like, oh, my God, what a gift.
You can't hope for this kind of fortune.
And they spat in the hockey god's face.
Spat right in the face.
You're never getting that opportunity again.
And for those who don't remember.
You think you're getting that in game six and seven?
For those who don't remember, what happened?
Friggin' Dylan Cousins, who Julian reminded me.
I wasn't even out of bed yet, bro.
You think you hate the Leafs.
They're my life.
Julian said Dylan Cousins is not even a regular penalty killer for the Sens.
He's, I think, been on the ice for one penalty killing shift this whole series.
And he gets a shorthanded goal.
Why, though?
What happened?
It was a Matthews giveaway.
Gave it right to him, actually.
Gave it right to him.
And...
Rated a two-on-one.
Nylander left his skates at home.
He Evan Bouchard-ed it.
Nylander.
Nylander had an Evan Bouchard on defense night last night.
Quit.
Matthews, that postgame, obviously, we got to ask about the turnover.
Yeah.
And he said he tried to find Mitchie up top.
He thought they drew them in close enough that there wasn't anybody there.
he says i didn't see the guy there he obviously picked it off that's on me i got to make a better
play so it's adam gaudette who crosses in the middle of the zone there who austin doesn't see
who steals the puck and then fires it up to to cousins it was good to hear austin talk about it
blankly have some accountability there but that play is indicative of everything steve is upset
what the Leafs about it's a play that Austin doesn't make if there's all this the weight of
the world on his shoulders so the Leafs are 0 for 30 on their last 30 power plays in games where
they can clinch John Tavares didn't become a Leaf until the 2019 playoffs so he gets a pass for the
2018 one that was marlo and gardner were on that unit
tavaris obviously missed the 2021 playoffs with the injury
have matthews and marner and nylander bid on the ice for almost every one of those over 30
i would matthews missed a couple games nylander missed a couple games yeah
i don't think marner's missed a single playoff game no all three of those guys
what do you what else do you need what else do you need they're nervous like it's very clear
like no but and this is the thing very it's very clear that they're playing
tight you know because no one's making you play professional sports what they couldn't do last
night was finish anything they they dominated the the neutral zone chances like they were really
good at getting into the zone and getting into positions where they could then get opportunities
but in terms of like finishing and continuing a chance it was a lot of one and done there's a lot
of we have the puck but nothing is happening and they weren't able to finish anything that's i think
entirely mental yeah like a play like that austin matthews isn't making that in game 50 he's making
that play because it's game number five and they have a chance to win this series and and you know
his hand was hurt because i mean he just it was a stupid it was it was it was a bad decision but
it was instinct right like the puck's coming at you you put your hand up oh shit there's no pad
the x described as like you grew up playing road hockey yeah you block it from road hockey you
You know, I don't blame him for that.
I don't blame him one bit.
Guys are hurt.
Guys are hurt.
Brady Kachuk, like, is putting up points.
He looks beatable.
He's playing hurt.
The pass has nothing to do with being hurt.
Like, you know how to pass a puck.
You're just making the wrong decision.
Well, also, if you're waiting for a playoff run where everyone's healthy,
you're going to be waiting for the rest of your lives.
It doesn't work that way.
It just doesn't.
so like i give them no excuses for anything good lord like we're all about sample size
this is the biggest sample size any core of failures has ever gotten because cores of
failures usually don't stay together for nearly a decade what are we doing what are we doing
Wait, so hold the what are we doings.
Because here's the thing.
They could win game six.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And they could win it convincingly.
Yeah.
It could be 7-1.
That'd be awesome.
And we'd be like, wow, they did it.
They've shown that could happen, Adam.
The anxiety is coming from they've shown zero evidence that they have that in their DNA.
exactly yeah none we're jumping ahead a little because like we're not even done that play
because the william nylander of it like you mentioned it briefly but like that's everything
that's been wrong with nylander and his entire pro career is that effort on defense that he's
making there we can play the the nhl edge goal visualizer because it's fun to see where nylander
is let's words matter jesse what do you mean fun it is fun this is this is all fun time all right
i'm enjoying it i'm enjoying having a great time today and has awesome mental health because of
the leafs all right so so we have the turnover here by austin where he doesn't see adam gaudet
who picks it off he thinks mitch is just happy and fun in the middle and austin's not caring he
doesn't see william nylander when the puck is turned over to adam gaudet is at the right face
off dot dylan cousins is behind him at the bottom of the face-off circle kneelander has an edge here
like a pretty considerable probably two or three strikes he is on the other side of the ice so
there is that yeah aggregate where you have like how they cut the angle how they slant sprinters
i'd say they're about even but so i'd say yeah because cousins is behind because william
knee landers over there it's about even it's about even ish and we watch them go down the ice
and one is immediately he's already beat is immediately striding towards the net looking
for this pass from his teammate oh my god willie is trailing him all the way down never makes an
effort to get back and cut off and had he that could have been that this game could have been
completely different maybe it wouldn't have maybe they would have lost one nothing but had he just
tied up Cousins stick then I think Gaudette's got to shoot there here at center ice they're both
at the red line still there's still an opportunity for William Nylander to at least get his stick in
the way of the pass from Gaudette to Cousins and here he just decides to not make the effort down
the ice not enter the blue lines enter the zone strong when he's crossing the blue line he lets
up it's a free play and it's a goal i give matthews credit for saying hey you know i gotta make a
better play there willie didn't come out to speak last night but matthews and marner did
uh willie didn't come out to speak i don't think so no no no there's only like four three or four
guys it's like barubay marner stallers and uh austin yeah it's they they do a rotation yeah
all right all right but like that that play there like willie i assume right when the play is
starting he's thinking this play is going to be like dumped down so I'm going to hang around in
the offensive zone because that's usually if you if you ever seen like the full ice when William
Nylander's out there he does a lot of I'm going to stay in the neutral zone and wait for this play
to develop so I can get my break away he's not in the neutral zone I can cheat for offense and he's
kind of hanging around here he'll slow down but in that moment you can't be thinking about going
back the other way and making that play offensively it's all about stopping this this play defensively
and he doesn't do it.
And William Nylander's fast.
He's got the speed.
There's no doubt in my mind
if he was given all his effort here,
he could have broken up this pass.
And in these moments where you're playing
a strategic style of hockey
where you're playing one-goal games
because you're trying to play perfect hockey,
you're playing great defensively,
and you're going to get your offense
very in limited samples,
but your main thing is playing defense.
This stuff is inexcusable.
Yep. Yep.
because that's how you lose hockey games yep uh i gotta say the goal visualizer is so cool
yeah and it also feels like now that we have that like just let us use the footage what's wrong with
you like we're all staring at dots of what happened like just yeah how is it better just
let us use the footage how is it better for the nhl not to just let us use the foot it's not it's
got nothing to do with the little dots running around we're watching this video game stuff
this is fine but in the nhl is going to be like we totally agree steve and they're going to take
this away instead of like let's use the highlights sometimes life throws your curveballs and you
don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check
this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building
is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows
oh and they're way around on that it's like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and
i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff because you gotta
have that scraper thing and the and the washer thing chemicals you gotta have the right chemicals
see that's what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing

In between games, Steve, you've been hustling on that Peloton.
Man, I'm just crushing the quads.
I'm quadzilla out there.
Why the quads?
Why have you decided to focus on that with the Peloton app?
Legs feed the wolf.
Legs feed the wolf?
Legs feed the wolf, buddy.
I'm going to be the best beginner beer leaguer in the world.
Oh, is that what it is?
Even if it's a bunch of busy nothing and I got no hands.
If you were smart, you would take the old approach that we saw.
What was it?
Mid-2000s, where you ride the bike after the game, and you also do your media there.
Yeah.
I keep forgetting.
The Senators.
The Sens.
The Sens were doing that.
Yeah.
You should ride the Peloton after your beer league games.
That's a great idea.
And then do the LFR from the Peloton.
Back in the day, they used to wrap you in a tarp and put you outside on an XR bike with duct tape around your arm so you'd sweat it out.
Oh, gosh.
I don't think they do that anymore.
They don't do that anymore.
Actually, with Peloton, you can do your things anywhere.
They've got the Peloton Tread and the Strength Plus apps.
You should check them out.
Steve's using them all the time.
Look at those thick arms from all those push-ups.

Now I'm just going to throw this out there. I already did
my pack opening. I don't know why.
I didn't know we were supposed to save it for the ad.
Why didn't we just do it on the show together?
I was like, no, I've got to dress my lineup.
I've got to be ready. I'm opening my pack.
I am also opening my pack. You've been rewarded with a
daily free pack. Awesome. Oh, it's doing the little
jiggle thing.
I got Nosek.
Oh.
And I got, next, I got 40 coins.

What team was that, Adam?
The Winnipeg Jets.
That's who you're starting?
Because right now, in my starting team spot, I have the St. Louis Bulls.
So we're going head to head.
All right.
I think we need to come back and see which team did better.
I agree.
And it'll be me.
Thank you very much.
Go Canada.
This is our new favorite game for the NHL playoffs.
Rip open packs, unlock players, buy and sell players on the marketplace.
Check it out.
It's called NHL Fantasy Stars.
Yeah.
These are the guys who...
And then you're like, all right, so the big guys don't have it.
Let's get a good depth performance.
They don't have the money to buy that.
We've been through that conversation.
We've been through this conversation.
and that and so that's it like i'm not i'm just i'm throwing it out there i'm just leaving all
these little breadcrumbs that we might end up needing when we're here friday hopefully we don't
no sunday oh that's when we need it i'm not sure there's a point to game seven if they lose game
six like really really like i hope no nope nope nope nope nope nope i'm not even doing it i'm not
manifesting that i'm not manifesting the evil i'm not manifesting the evil leafs and six it's what
i called before the series let's go adam was there more from the game specifically that i wanted to
bring up yeah i think in terms of the plays i think obviously it wasn't a very complicated game
The annoying part of the empty netter, the first one, was to me it felt like the visual of John Tavares in the net staring in.
I feel bad for him, right?
Because of the four of those guys, he was the one that looked like he was at least ready to play last night.
He was one of two Leafs who was regularly in front.
Yes.
Yes.
You know, okay, so the emphasis has been on the core.
Your sad puppy's on the screen.
oh man the the emphasis is on the core um the Craig Berube who I've really liked this season
he has to wear that third line what were you thinking yeah okay so let's talk about that
uh the combination of Max Pacioretty, Max Domi, and Bobby McMahon is uh catastrophic
they're horrible they're a horrible unit who are horrible at hockey together um they were bad in
game four they were worse in game five what were you thinking you're out of your mind
and i was like well at least he'll be able to protect them they were a liability every each
and every single time they took the ice right and your solution to that problem
was to throw out captain nothing to save them if you need okay you know what they're a net negative
Let's improve this by getting nothing done.
Dun-da-da-dun!
Pontus Holmberg comes out,
and he's got nothing spelled in diagonal letters
like the Rangers logo on a cape.
That's not why you have Max Domi
and Pacioretty in the lineup
and a guy who can skate like Bobby McMahon.
You don't have them out there for nothing.
Yep.
And you put Domi with Tavares and Nylander.
That wasn't the guy.
one of the best looking lines you've had at any point in the series was mcmahon tavaris
kneelander they never took the ice together last night what were you thinking what is that what why
why the why the loyalty to that line i haven't the foggiest no idea haven't the foggiest it was
it was a bad decision i think we see changes on thursday i don't think this lineup is the same
lineup they run out i think robertson probably gets back in i think mcmahon probably goes up
where you should be the i really like the lawton yarn croak lorenz line they had a great game they
had a great game but part of me wonders like do you blow that lineup to do something like okay
i'm gonna make my ideal lineup um nice matthews marner stays together a lot of people aren't
gonna like that it's their best shot at winning mcmahon tavaris kneelander stop put that line
together stop overthinking this good lord yeah third line lawton really uh in the middle
domey on the right
and this is where it gets complicated and i might put mcmahon there instead
and maybe holmberg is on the second line but i still really don't like that
and then i'm kind of thinking camp because green did too good of a job i don't know if
nicky bobby gets in there and does a good job so like who's left camp florence and yarn croak
i wouldn't mess with the fourth line so maybe why not have then two four checking lines
then so okay you keep that line together so let's build a new one camp holmberg
Domi.
Good Lord.
That would be your line because Domi's the one you haven't inserted yet.
I mean, that's horrendous.
That's horrendous.
So is it Holmberg with Domi and Robertson?
It might be as simple as just inserting Robertson back in there
or Kompf if you want.
Domi in the middle, Robertson on the right, Holmberg on the left.
And then McMahon moves up to line two.
Or you just put Kompf in there.
I could do that.
I could do that.
You know?
But you can't ice that lineup again.
Lawton had a fantastic little breakaway.
Yeah, he did.
He got knocked from behind by Kachuk, which was a great play by Kachuk.
He was a great penalty killer last night.
Taking the body.
Fantastic penalty killer.
I feel like his performance in this series has been so overshadowed
by what's happened in the last few games.
He's so versatile, and this is what they paid for.
You can get him on a penalty kill where you don't have to use Austin as much.
He's been fantastic defensively.
I think if the Leafs lose this series, a heavy emphasis is going to be put
on what they spent at the deadline and he's going to be in the crosshairs and it's going to be
totally unfair no no that's not on him it's not on him at all no he's been a great player no nothing
true living did at the deadline is to blame carlo's been fine you're doing big picture stuff
like carlo's been great i think since he's gotten adjusted to the team like the first couple weeks
were a little rough but that's somebody new on a new team adjusting to a new system but since then
he's been fantastic leafs leafs made their mistake june 2023 so all right so so okay we've talked
we've broken down the game we've gotten sad uh what do they need to do in ottawa win a fucking
hockey game win an elimination game like leafs have not lost four games in a row all year which
is a perfect, again, perfect time to do it.
L-M-A-O.
Yeah.
They did lose three in a row at one point, and Willie said, big deal.
It's three games.
And then they won three in a row, and Willie said, big deal.
It's three games.
What matters now is literally three periods.
If you dump it, I want you to consider chasing it.
I think that'd be a great idea.
They're doing the dump and don't chase thing again.
Dump and change.
It is poison for my brain.
i i've seen did you know that lobsters actually have more cones in their eyeballs than a human
does so they can see more colors than we do oh that's cool that's cool i have evolved into a
lobster because i see red when they do that and it's just been getting more and more red i've seen
you guys wouldn't believe how many colors exist in the known universe because of the rage I feel
watching the Leafs on the not four check it's more of a three check maybe even a two check
they are miserable in that regard win a few puck battles stop ending up on the wrong side of the
puck which is what the the Sens did masterfully in their own corner and along the half wall it's
just the little things and shoot the fucking puck shoot the put create traffic in front
shoot the puck put your stick in the ice try to get a rebound it felt like pulling teeth
in game uh they did an okay job in game four not as good as the others but they did an okay job
uh game five was far and away their worst game in regard to all those things i just mentioned
like craig craig berube hockey i didn't i didn't see a glimmer of that in game five so if you're
craig berube jesse what do you say to them i mean he said oh just stick with whatever that can't be
the message in the dressing room that can't be what he's telling them i think i think he's it's
not as simple as as like stick with it it's the process was right and like they're not they don't
have the i don't think they have the mental fortitude in game five to get over the hump and
do what they should have done but it's about just like getting through that part of the game you
know it's about that extra effort that they need on just finishing finishing their goals and
well i want to compare and contrast that to the edmonton oilers who immediately played after them
now have a 3-2 lead in their series they were tied with four minutes to go and the la coach
this is three games ago la coach jim heller makes a terrible challenge we all know that
and they're able to take advantage of that penalty afterwards and they've pivoted and
they've come back and everybody all the way through the lineup is giving it every single
one of them and and they've been able to take a series that i was like i straight up after game
two i was like i don't know if edmonton's gonna win a game in this series they were so bad
and they are now all of a sudden hey it looks like the edmonton oilers are playing hockey again
oh speaking of teams that should be blown up i'm just wondering oh my gosh the kings i'm i'm just
i'm just wondering why where is that where is that need it's not it's not missed it like it's
not a want it's a need i need to win what you're trying to yeah what he's trying to do is he's
trying to kill a decades-long mental block that these guys have and it's it's not it's not the
guys that are they've just brought in it's the big guys who didn't do what they should have done
last night and that's Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares and none of them could finish in those
moments and I honestly think game six is gonna be not easy for them but I think they're gonna
finish it up in game six because I think it's easier to play on the road for this team I think
being at home in that pressure and and going into that game where Ottawa played fantastic right out
of the gate where I thought they were really fast and they've kind of unlocked something in the
series now that it's moved on a little bit and they're a little settled in they they look like
a really faster team than they did in games one and two and i think the leafs going on the road
after everything that happened here is going to be easier for them it's still ontario can i read
some quotes sure because greg berube is speaking to the speedia the media so we have a bit in our
group chat where someone's dad refers to him as greg berube and i've said it out loud a hundred
times and I can't stop myself okay Craig Berube yeah speaking to the media these quotes are from
CJ reporter Chris Craig Berube says he'll look at Leafs lineup changes for game six but it doesn't
sound like a big shake-up is coming the quote is I don't want to change too much I think there's
been a lot of good Craig Berube emphasized that it's going to take a team effort for the Leafs
to eliminate the Sens I get it that's all I hear around here is core core core the core four but
it's on everybody in the team we're a team and it's on the whole team not just four guys now
wait and Adua also quoting Craig Berube Leafs head coach Craig Berube this morning on the
Lorenz Lawton yarn croak line they work and hound as a unit and that's why they have success
also added, I think
we can have that mentality
more as a team for sure.
Which is it?
That's not talking out of both sides of your mouth?
Yeah, I think it's both.
He's defending the core, the core. Coddling.
Oh no.
Oh no.
Oh no.
It doesn't matter
who you put there. It's the same
it's okay little baby.
It's okay precious little angels
who make all the friggin' money on the team,
you're okay and everyone loves you and you're blessed.
It's the core, core, core.
It's the whole team.
All right, Craig, talk about the rest of the team.
Oh, I think they're playing fucking great.
Yeah.
Like, guys, what are we doing?
It's them.
It's them.
Be the stars you're paid to be or FO.
That's all I got.
If they win, Steve, do you still feel that way?
No.
No, I don't.
I wonder why.
Because then they pulled it off.
Not hard.
Jeez.
Pulling teeth.
Agony, agony.
And now the Leafs.
No, I can't.
Because I want them so bad to win game six.
I really do.
I really, really do.
I'm telling you, people are already preparing their postmortems.
And it ain't me.
i don't need to i know all the shit by heart i know all this stuff better than
my family like
uh let me this team bro here here it is james james myrtle he said why maple leafs fans shouldn't
panic after another brutal loss that's the that's the title of the article good start here are the
three reasons first one is leafs are likely going to win this series right right jesse well yeah
mathematically yeah yeah they're um yeah james said you know but why you shouldn't panic uh
because the leafs can't beat the panthers playing like this anyway actually that's what he said i
almost spit all over he's like why why panic if it ultimately doesn't matter am i right beat auto
in game six or seven advance to the next round on minimal rest and then the leafs face the florida
panthers the defending champs a bruising punishing team that is currently steamrolling a very good
tampa bay lightning club three to one in the atlantic that's honestly facts yeah no there's
no argument against that it's also funny like if you don't think they can beat the panthers then
why are you getting so worked well and this is what he said and if and if and then he's like and
and and then if they beat the panthers and then you expect them to do it for two more series after
that it just doesn't seem plausible or possible if that's not far enough for you there's one uh
there's one with uh for those that have no hope at this point he said if the leafs blow this series
they'll just blow they'll be blown up and that is can you quickly check the published date on that
it might be might be 2024 i think you made a mistake there i'm 25 oh it's april 30 oh that's
a fresh one yeah yeah that's the thing with these takes you got to check uh the date because it's
been the same problem for nearly a decade so you got to be careful right got to check so but hey
where do all those you were being too mean comments go nobody's saying that who's saying
that oh no one anymore who no i guess back in the day people did accuse us of that back in the day
back in the day annually right around late april i think that's very untrue no they did
i think right now the majority of people are like oh yeah no this team is awful no i agree yeah
that's what i'm saying where'd they go yeah let's not relegate the fans who reacted in 2021 yeah
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
People call you an idiot.
People call you an idiot for being right.
People call you an idiot for being right.
You get to point out that you were right.
Sorry.
It's 3-2 in a series in 2025.
That's the time.
Oh, yeah.
It's a normal 3-2 series.
We yell at fans from 2021.
Yes.
I agree.
And 2022.
I'm just saying.
2023.
2024.
Stop.
Stop.
Stop.
Steve, if they're going to lose.
You're not going to gaslight me.
Save this.
save that for like a week from now my memory is too good for this what are you doing being mad
yes there you have big mad thank you i'm oh i'm enormous mad uh so what do you what do you tell
yourself is when the t when you pick leafs and six and you end up being right i didn't think
it'd be like this where they go up three nothing and then game five is far and away their worst
game of the series you can't tell me there's not a hmm there's a tinge to this when was the last
time the least played a really poor hockey game hmm like one that mattered this no this team in
terms of the regular all these playoff games and then the regular season going back okay because
it has been it's been a while that that florida game i'd say that florida game near the end of
the season when was that uh 70 game 76 7 i'm pulling up the leaf schedule right that's just
off the top of my head april 8th they weren't very good in san jose no that's that's the florida
game that you said didn't matter you very under reacted to that one that's true so that's not
the florida game it's this florida game on march 12th wow it's a while and then they remember then
And they lost to the Sens that Saturday on the, like, hey, this is their get-right game.
And they lost to that game.
So it's probably March 15th against the Ottawa Senators this past season.
Yeah.
Which is, that's four, that's seven, that's eight.
And then we go over to April.
That's 10, that's 13, that's 15, that's 17.
And this is why we believed!
That's 20, and that's 21 games.
yeah 20 so 20 games in between playing a game that you would truly call a stinker game and we get to
a clinching game and here they are a team that we all feared would show up like jesse looking at
the regular season is the biggest mistake you can make when evaluating this team uh like how do you
as a pro scout for like the ducks how do you go out and then tell your staff i like this guy who
was on the leafs last year i think we should sign him uh well how does he look uh i have no fucking
clue actually um he looked like i'm gonna say somewhere between pavel burry and alex mcgillney
uh in like december how do you look in april oh he went like seven games without a point
oh okay well we're the ducks so maybe we don't give a shit but like like dude what the hell
is with the shots of the ducks i don't know man i think they're gonna make i think they're
i think they're a good team too well and also they've had deeper runs in the playoffs a lot
more recently than the leafs have for sure and they've been garbage for a long time yeah
uh can we go no oh do you want to do you want to wrap this no i was just saying with the with
the games there it's it's i assume like the coaching staff and the people internally look at
that and say we've been playing hockey for very well for weeks here at a time you know it's it's
not that that we were losing this game here and it happened in a vacuum it obviously didn't with
the history that's gone on but the team they know how to play good hockey and it's a matter of
getting over the hurdle to do it because they've illustrated for the last 20 games that they're
able to do it and it's now berube asking hey why didn't you execute in those areas mitch and austin
and willie like if you did that for 20 straight games what happened here in this clinching game
that you didn't finish it like that i think it's a lot simpler for those guys to evaluate that way
This is why I said repeatedly in the LFR last year, last year, last night.
And last year.
This is why I said repeatedly in the LFR last night,
you're running out of opportunities to prove you're not exactly what people say you are.
Like Leafs win game six, I'm going to get like completely shit on.
You predicted Leafs in six.
Yeah, I'm going to get shit on for a series that I predicted.
because of how i reacted after game five i'm ready for it i'm prepared for it i look forward to it
but until they prove me and most of this fan base wrong wear the l on your forehead
okay no i i think i think it's fair to have the leafs start from a negative standpoint and they
have to earn their way i think that's fair like i feel like that that mentality if you want to
if you're choosing to go into that because of the history of the team where they have to earn your
respect and it's not coming in at a zero and their performance gets them to the positive i think they
start from that negative and have to earn their way up the clutch moment of the game is sponsored
by clutch.ca the easiest way to sell your car now i'm gonna give myself a shameless plug here
because i know steve does his watch alongs everybody's watching along to steve oh good
but there's another watch along happening listen we're small but we're mighty it's gripper nation
And we are following the
The haves and the caps
Okay, Gripper Nation
I think Clutch knows about Gripper Nation
I hope not
It's all a part of it
So I guess when you're gripping the pedal
You use your toes
If you're driving barefoot
That's where Gripper Nation comes in with your new car
Sunshine's coming in
It's a sunny day outside
You just stepped off the beach and you grip that pedal
Oh yeah, Gripper Nation's strong
What was really important about game four was that Montreal was up two to one.
This was their window to not just tie the series.
I think if they'd won this game, we're talking, does Montreal actually steal this one from the Cavs?
Oh, buddy.
But one of the projects that the Capitals brought in, and this is a project player, and there are many, right?
Logan Thompson.
Jake Chikrin was a bit of one.
We probably mentioned Pierre-Luc Dubois.
The one that nobody talks about is Andrew Mangiapane.
The bread man.
The bread man.
The real bread man.
Now, Jesse, can you bring up Game Center so that we can have a look at Mangiapane?
It's on the screen now.
Okay.
So, here we go.
There is Trevor Van Riemsdyk behind the net.
TVR.
There he is.
And really, they've been hemmed in a lot.
Look at that drop pass.
Here he comes.
Forza Italia with the shot.
Oh, look at that.
Now, what's amazing about this play is how quickly the Caps move through the neutral zone.
It's knife-through-butter territory.
Look at that.
Boom.
Three guys on them.
Yep.
That's so...
And the Habs didn't play bad defense on this play.
No, really, really good play by Mangiapane walking the line.
Yeah.
Eat bread, buddy.
Eat bread.
And that is where you see, guys, the separation between these two teams.
I know it's a one and an eight seed.
I know the age differences.
I know all that.
Montreal's got a big, bright future.
But you can't really deny that right now it is the Washington Capitals series.
And that is the Clutch playoff moment.
I'm Andrew Mangiapane, obviously the game winner, brought to you by Clutch.

I think we could have done the whole episode.
Really?
I don't know where else we can go.
Kings stink.
And that's why I want to bring it to them,
because it's a compare and contrast, as I brought up earlier.
Devils are dead.
Let me give you something.
So no scoring in the first period.
Andre Kuzmenko, who I think is probably the deadline pickup of the year,
gets the power play goal.
But the two goals that lead to the Edmonton win.
Let me give you the names.
Let me ask you what's missing.
Okay?
Evander Kane.
Guy who missed the whole season.
From John Klingberg.
Guy who has missed most of the last two seasons.
Third period.
Matthias Janmark.
The janitor.
Victor Arvidsson.
Had a tough start.
Vasily Podkolzin.
Like, once highly touted, pretty much a role player.
Yeah.
All those names are not Connor McDavid and Leon Dreisaitl.
They didn't even factor into the scoring until Nuge put it in.
The net and McDavid and Dreisaitl got their point.
And this is a team that had to switch goalies because they're starter.
Yep.
I mean, they did this last year, you know.
And what I couldn't believe after the fourth game was,
okay, they've won two in a row.
Now we should give Stuart Skinner the goal back, right?
Like people were asking that question.
No, Calvin Pickard's got to go.
What is it, guys, that the Edmonton Oilers can do?
And I saw this against Vancouver last year specifically.
Like Vancouver ties it up at home, three minutes to go.
Leon Dreisaitl like 30 seconds later is like, no, I'm going to score again.
Dagger to the heart.
How can the Oilers do this?
They're so, so, so much more intense.
So much more intense than the blue and white team that we happen to watch all the time.
McDavid brings that intensity.
Dreisaitl brings that intensity.
They crash the hell out of the net.
They're breakneck speed fast.
And they move the puck like lightning.
When they cheat for offense, what do you do?
What's the game plan there?
What on earth is the game plan there?
There's nothing in the league like it.
And I'll add Evan Bouchard to that too.
A player who I think I called a top five offensive defenseman in the NHL.
The problem has never been his offense.
if they're crashing the net and everyone's worried about the flanks so you got a screen in front you
got lethal flanks and you got one of the greatest touches of god in the league back there what do
you do to stop that and if he passes it what do you do to stop that if it gets floated on
and there's a rebound what do you do to stop that what do you do when the oilers cheat offense
There's nothing you can do.
It's the singular most unstoppable force in the National Hockey League.
I think Adam did a good job of illustrating that.
Like, last night wasn't even about the big guys.
And Daniel Nugent-Bowman in The Athletic also,
he had a little spotlight in his post-game article for Matthias Janmark.
Because Janmark's like a dude who has another level in the playoffs.
last season he scored four goals in 79 games and this season he scored and then last season the
playoffs he had four goals in 25 games this year in the playoffs he has two goals in five games
after having two goals in 80 games last year the ability for the dudes around the stars as well to
step up offensively is an incredible cheat code that they have and other teams don't have the
luxury of having guys like and mark just unreal when the playoffs hit and do you remember why
he's called the janitor why is that last year when the oilers were sad sack in last place and
firing jay woodcroft yan mark is the one who gave an impassioned speech to rally the boys
and after that they started playing hockey in their words the janitor way
and they were one of the best if not the best teams in the nhl from that point onward from
like american thanksgiving onward so i know you wanted to get me to talk about the role players
and then i was talking about all the stars which was stupid but uh when when you're contending
with those guys that stars you exhaust yourself and i think it would probably be called a good
game if you limited them to one goal yeah and i mean if you told the la kings last night hey
connor and leon are not scoring tonight yeah you'd be like okay then we've got a pretty good shot to
win exactly but the oilers are like now wait a sec if our depth even sort of shows up there's
nothing they can do looking at the leaves it's the total opposite like it should be if the stars show
up we have a good chance of winning if the depth shows up with them there's not much you can do to
stop it the stars aren't showing up so there's nothing the depth can really do if the depth if
one of the bottom two lines gets you a goal you would call that a fantastic night or like you get
a goal from the d you're not getting it from anywhere i thought hyman's quotes post game were
really great too where he was talking about how they had an ability last night to roll all four
lines and it wasn't in an emphasis it wasn't an emphasis on running out connor and leon constantly
and hyman and kane and all them it was just like no matter which one of our four lines want to be
out there we're gonna get some offense and the three one score wasn't like how that game went
no oh my god what were the shots the shots were they almost doubled them up it was like 46 to 22
oh hey nice work jesse wow nice work i remember that and by the way edmonton did not score on
either of their power plays in la yeah yeah so like in la if you turned on that game uh it's it
was all oilers all the time especially that first period um the shots were i think very crooked in
that that period as well and the kings took the lead like this yeah this was this was a comeback
victory for the edmonton oilers and their third comeback victory in a row which is the first time
they've ever done that in the playoffs they've ever had three straight comeback victories and
Like, it never felt that the Kings had control of the game.
Even though they were up 1-0, it felt like it was a mirage.
It felt like it was a lie because the Oilers just had this offense going.
And when they have their offense going, nobody's competing with them.
And when they get defense on top of that, where the offense is so good that the defense is so easy to play, they're unstoppable.
And that's why they were in the Stanley Cup final last year.
And Jim Hiller said after the game, they beat us in every area.
In every area.
Darcy Kemper's the only reason that that game's 3-1.
Oh, yeah.
That review, was it game three or four?
That was the game four review.
Game four.
That he literally cost them the series.
It's like a franchise-defining mistake.
Yep.
It's kind of nuts because they were so in control in the first two games.
they looked so complete in the first game the Oilers looked so flawed they did now Evander
Kane coming back is a bigger factor than I think people have given it credit for he's already
scored two goals he is you know this is a seven million dollar power forward well right I mean
it's kind of an important addition when a guy doesn't play all season yes in terms of guys
who have guys who didn't play a single regular season game this year have three goals in these
playoffs so you're saying the key for the Leafs to win Yanni Hockenpah ah no no he played two
yeah but way too many oh he played two thousand percent more games than those guys combined
dang it I thought I cracked the code true nope nope um Matty how is your how's your
Hockenpah love going uh they gotta get him out there I think you know Jesse he's gonna be the
one he's gonna do it for us he's gonna he's gonna be that other defenseman that gets a goal
could have had him pa could have had him pa so did oilers close it out and like i don't i don't
have like grander um opinions on the kings yet if they lose this in four straight because it's not
over yet or four straight years sorry i should specify but it would be four straight games jesse
But, oh yeah, yeah, it'd be, it'd be four straight games.
The Oilers are up 3-2.
Yeah.
It's, that's devastating.
So, so just from the, from the recap last night, the Oilers' natural ability, this is
from The Athletic, to possess the puck when they had McDavid and Drysaddle on the ice
and the shot counter widened in Edmonton's favor for the first two periods.
At one point, the Oilers had a 33-11 advantage in shots.
33-11.
And.
Does Jim Hiller lose his job?
ah man i
does rob i don't lose his job yeah maybe he's been there a lot longer jim heller's been the
king's coach for what two seasons yeah he just got there and they've gotten better he just got it
no but they've gotten better and like i just don't think they have the tools
um oh i just want to point out that landis cog and kane combined who did not play this season
have more goals in fewer games than matthews marner and nylander combined
two guys who did not play this season they didn't play
oh god landis cog didn't play for over a thousand days that's a tough stat
that's a tough stat yeah they're ass rob blake by the way is was general manager since 2017
i mean you lose to a team four years in a row in the first round and you're gm for all of them
you should probably go what are we doing here unless you're just leafs west like you're gonna
fail the same way every year and do nothing what's wrong with you his uh his only appearances
in the playoffs as gm are the three losses to the oilers this season i guess four appearances
and then in 2017-18 they got swept by the golden knights oh the knights inaugural year where i
picked the kings so like rob blake does not have a good resume he has zero playoff series wins oh
so is he just western the kings of the western leafs but rob blake is western stevie why
like this franchise this franchise legend you can't fire oh i was gonna say at least
rob blake's made the play oh he's made the playoffs they've done well in the regular
season he's made some moves where i'm like damn that's a really good move we've been somehow
ranting about andre kuzmango every episode um you're gonna lose the oilers again do you give
unless you don't do you give him the thing you speculated about eisman where you just kick him
up you give him a different role and you let somebody else run the team i don't know i don't
know oh that's so tough i don't know how you look somebody in the face and say yeah zero playoff
appearances since you've been here or say it's playoff series victories four straight losses
to the Oilers and you say yeah you deserve to have a job again like Joe Sackick with the avalanche
like because that's what we're asking hey you did such a good job as GM Joe we're gonna kick
you upstairs to president right um but like you look at the Leafs with Shanahan like I'm not gonna
miss him like if he goes I don't like as a player he didn't mean anything to the Leafs he was never
a Leaf I don't care yeah they're not firing Wendell Clark they're not firing Darcy Tucker
dougie yeah um for the kings firing rob blake is hard yeah yeah detroit firing stevie y is hard
imagine when things go south at some point they will in colorado as they do with all teams joe
sackick when it's his time or maybe he never has to move on no no like is there always good he's
good because mcfarland's the one who's gonna yeah get the brunt of it if it ever goes south or
whatever yeah i feel like rob blake gotta you gotta do the same thing here bring in somebody
to run the team like how you have chris mcfarland running the team for joe sackett with blake i think
it'd be fair i think it'd be fair he does he hasn't done bad enough but that playoff record's
horrendous you're right can i give you guys two players in a different series that are stars
that are coming through for their team and their team is at a severe disadvantage
Ottinger.
Yeah, Ottinger, yes, but not that one.
Not Dallas Stars.
Hey, you know who's combined for 10 goals?
It's two players, one team.
10 goals.
10 goals in five games these guys have.
Are you going to give me Kempe?
What series are you talking about?
I'm not telling you.
McKinnon?
No, Wyatt Johnston.
Uh-huh.
Oh, I'm going to get you.
i'm gonna freaking get you wyatt johnston and who's the other star
nah i don't know it's not the stars yeah damn ryan hartman
no damn who the hell are you talking about caprizov and boldy damn it caprizov and boldy
each have five goals each wow each have five goals they each scored last night and i want
to remind everybody the wild have a 15 million dollar cap penalty which they've had for three
years they've made the playoffs in two of those years which is crazy man and this year obviously
last night they they lose in overtime brett howden scores the winner i was gonna say really those
goals really helped them uh it did the three two series only tied that game up with 331 uh on the
clock jesse 331 this is just the let producer hayden down gently i i think no we talk because
i think the theme of the show a little bit if we're going to talk about toronto the way we did
We talk about Edmonton the way we did.
Let's talk about this series the way that we are,
which is the names I'm seeing, Kaprizov, Boldy.
Kaprizov, Boldy.
What are they to their team?
I look at other teams and I go, why did they get that?
Why can't we have that?
Today is going to be one of those shows where everything is about the Leafs,
unfortunately, and it can't be helped.
How about Gustafsson leaving the game, eh?
That was crazy.
He must be dog sick.
dog sick to leave a playoff game like that oh yeah yeah do you have to go up three two in the
series you have to be dead yeah no and so i always give athletes the benefit of the doubt there he
must be like just is this it for them guys like is this where the golden knights turn the corner
and it's like you know because everybody did expect the knights to win right i think everybody
picked them is this where the golden knights are like okay we're taking this now we're stanley cup
winning dna team jesse i think it's over i think it's over i think it's been over for a while
it was two two going into last night what do you mean it's over for a while i believe in golden
nights uh they're going into minnesota though aren't they uh game six yeah i don't know i don't
know i like that advantage for minnesota did you guys see the play that erickson eck made on the
boldy goal the backhanded sauce no sometimes on leaf game nights i miss everything else yeah like
that that that little stuff like the minnesota wild has been doing all series long where they
have in these like globetrotter like plays it's something that i don't i didn't notice that they
have that ability to do where it's crazy these special things they're they're doing out there
but i think what vegas brings to the table is too overwhelming to win a full to win a full series
again they're so and and here's the thing the wild the wild they're gonna have what is it 40
or 50 million dollars to spend in free agency this year so whatever holes they have they can
plug them did you see uh crazy travis yost tweet about um uh brett howden know what he said and
how they're just trying to recreate chandler stevenson and it's working it's amazing like
good for them here i want to let me see if i can bring it up and send it to jesse but basically
his career like um I guess plus minus wasn't necessarily plus minus but uh there it is I'm
gonna send it over to Jesse um he was I mean the Vegas Golden Knights got scored on more than they
scored when he was out there uh Brett Howden career goal differential even strength 2018 to
2023 it started it he was at like plus four and then it just kept going down and down and down
and down and down until it was worse than minus 30 and now he's just skyrocketing wow back up
good coaching i well i mean he's pretty good coach young player too like that this is what's
supposed to happen with young players what do you got they got better what do you got there i was
pulling up his his tweet but i had the the erickson act pass up too if you guys want to see
i'll play for you in real time uh so maddie you can't show this one but this is the backhand sauce
that he sends across and that leads to the goal i pulled up the goal it's barely part of the
highlight pack because that's the only time they show it there and then so i just got to go back
to this overall view but it's a spectacular play and it feels like this is like one of six goals
that they've made like this uh yeah caprizoff found boldy similarly where's this highlight
pack from matt that's just the the goal highlight on the game center page so i'm pretty sure that's
like all ai like i don't think that's important to this no no it's important because there have
it's been a complaint of mine and others have noticed that uh they don't show enough of the
development of the goal oh because it's not a person doing it it's some machine right right
But I think like you can go to the actual like they and they and they do the YouTube.
Yeah.
So like there's other sources to find it.
These are just kind of finding the end result.
The goal, Matt, if you don't pull it up, this is Erickson there at his own blue line.
And then he gets Boldy a pass right over here, just entirely on the backhand.
It's truly beautiful stuff.
He threw three Golden Knights, too.
Yeah.
Like that's the it's always the same guys in the most underrated player in the league conversation,
which is how you know we're having the conversation wrong erickson eck is super underrated that's a
great player he really got my attention at the four nation faceoff and you were talking about
minnesota scoring and the ryan hartman goal that was taken back like ryan hartman i have my
criticisms of him and i think they're entirely fair yeah he gets suspended he's not a good not
a good guy uh he's really really dirty on the ice when he's playing with other humans he's not a
good person but his ability to when the playoffs start to step up it's the same thing with jan mark
if that's the theme throughout the thing guys stepping up he has that ability and that goal
was a beautiful goal and him doing the moonwalk celebration too like yeah you're talking about a
dude who's not afraid of the moment and has the cojones it's i'm gonna score this huge playoff
goal i'm gonna celebrate with the moonwalk and i'm ryan hartman this is the only time i show up
to play otherwise i'm just trying to injure people on the ice yes like that that's why you have them
right and that that's why you have them and it's cool to see now that we're in the playoffs these
guys come out he turned an insane corner after uh two goals in seven games that was it five points
in six games five points in five games now he's got four points in five games he's just turned
this crazy corner the new jersey devils went home last night tonight the canadians could go home
and the Lightning could go home,
and we'll find out between the Jets and the Blues
whether the first two games of that series
or the second two games of that series mattered more.
Man.
Good matchups tonight.
There's, man, there's a few teams,
a few players that are trying to rewrite the book on themselves,
and all they've done so far is just write new chapters.
Yeah.
Like, the Leafs really trying to rewrite the book on themselves,
and the book on Connor Hellebuck is getting long.
Right, right.
You need to, if I could be an editor, you need to shave that down a few chapters.
The Hurricanes-Devils series on the Hurricanes side of things,
it's felt like this, and I was happy to see the stat that backs it up.
But that team, the Hurricanes, lost five straight OT games up until that point.
And it felt like in every big moment in these playoff runs that they've had
where they've continually won a first-round series.
I think it's seven straight now, seven straight years they won a first-round series,
which is really cool.
Consistently.
But when they get deeper, it feels like they always lose that one game in the series that's like a tight OT.
They can never get that extra goal.
And seeing that this was their first win in six consecutive OT games, I was like, oh, yeah, it's felt like that.
They never get that extra goal.
So against a very undermanned New Jersey team, like, I don't know how much credit, how much we can take away from this series.
But it's cool to see them get that monkey off their back and finally execute in big moments.
And you got to play the games, man.
It doesn't matter.
The injuries are the injuries, right?
Nobody goes in healthy.
sometimes you get a break take advantage of it though game construction is so interesting
um because we talked about how the Oilers when they're cheating for offense are unstoppable
the Devils get that three nothing lead and it's almost like a cross they have to bear
because you know Carolina is going to be cheating for offense for the rest of the game
and you got to do your best to weather that storm with who like Brian Dumoulin and
Dylan's out Luke Hughes is out you already don't have Jack Hughes uh Siegenthaler just got back
who else are they missing or is Siegenthaler out again I don't remember they were missing like
yeah dude what are you supposed to do yeah exactly what are you supposed to do something
to watch for tonight Andre Vasilevsky's oh sorry go ahead oh just just on the on the on the
Hurricanes just to keep shouting them out Shveshnikov um underrated performance this
playoffs five goals in five games he's five for five oh yeah so far this playoffs he leads the
playoffs what's that like with that's great and sebastian ajo who scored the ot winner what a
reaction has every ot winner for the canes this season no way regular season and playoffs he's
the only person who scored an ot oh that's a cool stat wow yeah and the devils um you're not going
to win a series if you can't score on the power play i think they finished oh for 15 oh that's a
sheldon keith power play in the playoffs i mean he didn't have his guys but but that but still
Sheldon Keefe-ass hockey right there.
0 for 15, I think they finished on the power.
It was 0 for 15 or 13, I can't remember.
I hate giving a team a carte blanche pass,
but the Devils meet a lot of the criteria.
Sorry, I just wanted to get those stats.
Andre Vasilaski's last three playoffs are ugly.
This year, he has an 8-8-4 save percentage.
Last year, it was an 8-9-7,
and against the Leafs in 2023, it was an 8-7-5,
so that's something to keep an eye on tonight
as the Lightning face elimination.
Now, this playoff season, you've probably noticed Steve's videos online
where he's manifesting a win, right, Steve?
Manifest.
Last couple days, it hasn't gone so well.
No, I didn't manifest hard enough.
So this playoff season, Boston Pizza is now introducing
its very own championship room spray, and Jesse has it right there.
It captures the bold, raw spirit of a hockey triumph
with notes of bubbly champagne, cheap lager, sweaty hockey gear,
used hockey puck and
the indescribable scent of
32 years of pent-up Canadian
frustration. This spray turns
any space into a locker room celebration
and you're about to be sprayed with it.
There's how to use instructions
on this bottle. What does it say? Identify
playoff watching space.
Spray championship room
spray liberally before
the game. Let the smell
of winning take over and
turn it into reality. Well, Adam,
you and I are going to be here watching the
game on thursday right the road game so we'll be above maple leaf square so we better spray this
championship room spray all over our room i like that what you're right where we're gonna be
watching yeah oh it actually smells kind of cool now if you want to pick up a bottle uh they
actually you can pick them up on a first come first serve basis because uh as canada's favorite

I mean, you know, I didn't know what I was agreeing to.
Well, what about the Leafs?
Yes, also.
That too.
Okay, great.

economy there's a couple of news and notes though around the nhl that we should talk about before we
sort of wrap i think the first thing is the nba is going to copy them uh they are getting rid of
the all-star game and they are pivoting to international competition hey what a surprise
because the four nations was spectacular and it kind of dummied the NBA all-star game maybe the
NBA all-star game just because of momentum would have probably had better ratings overall because
it's a more absorbed sport in the states but I would say that in terms of national headlines
the NHL dominated that weekend and that week leading up to it um also the NHL has not canceled
but changed the all-star game in Long Island in 2026 when was this announced this was yesterday
And we talked about it on the on the pregame stream. Thanks for watching. And and so essentially, the whole idea was they were going to do this all-star game because all the NHL flights leave from New York. So all the star players that would have gone to the all-star game, if they'd wanted to skip it, Gary Bettman was like, ha ha, you have to leave from New York. So you're going to be here anyway. So you better be at the all-star game.
and then and and again the nhl website as of last night even when they'd made the announcement had
not changed yet it still said sign up here for all-star game information um the the gary betman
said it will be an olympics kickoff that's all we know so so there will be probably a skills
competition i would imagine but we haven't heard any details on that yet and it sounded like
the the islanders were pretty much just told last minute and they made it they said we welcome any
any event at ubs arena that allows us to show off our facilities but i feel like the islanders are
like hey we're kind of getting screwed here and i was talking to jesse about it and i was like this
feels like this was the drop dead date and the pa has been pushing back going no we're not going to
do an all-star game before the olympics gary it's pointless well it is pointless and i and i said to
jesse was like listen if this is a sleepier city you can probably push this but new york is new
york yeah and the hotels and the event spaces and the promotion and all that stuff that's going to
be booked you need to get this done now you need to do right by the islanders but there's no need
to have an all-star game no before the olympics the whole point of an all-star game is to highlight
your stars this is what the olympics are for right man like do it another time what it you
got 2027 you can figure something out there yes yeah and you can do it on the island yeah it's
crazy you can do it there uh the next thing i want to move on to because there's not much more
there's not much where to go with that uh rick talkett will not be back as vancouver's head
coach now interestingly enough uh that jim rutherford did say that you know he wanted to
be closer to his family back on the east coast sure sounds like philly to me but uh after a very
long and thorough process unfortunately rick has decided to leave the vancouver canucks this is
very very disappointing news but we respect um rick's decision to move to a new chapter in his
hockey career we did everything in our power to keep him but at the end of the day rick felt he
needed to change he's a good friend a good coach and we can't thank him enough for all the uh work
he did for our organization talk as a stand-up guy and we miss with wish him nothing but the
best moving forward i think they wish him nothing but the best i think that's fair to say yes now
we know or at least it's been rumored that they threw a lot of money and a lot of term in them
what made him one of the higher paid coaches in the league the philadelphia flyers job is open
along with the New York Rangers job,
along with the Boston Bruins job.
Those are just three East Coast teams
that are available right now.
Those are pretty good.
Kind of makes you think, doesn't it, guys?
Don't you think a little bit?
Well, here's what I think.
With Jim Benning, you killed the man, but not the idea.
Someone take Jim Rutherford's microphone away.
Or, I tell you what, as a member of the so-called media,
Turn it up.
Turn it up.
Turn my headphones up.
Blast that.
Turn it to 11.
This man is a quote machine, and in no way is any of it good for the Canucks.
It is entertaining.
It is a total barrel of monkeys.
I'm really enjoying it.
But if I'm on the Canucks PR staff, I'm like, Jim, Jim.
Yeah.
The Quinn Hughes thing was weird.
The Quinn Hughes thing was so weird.
Why did he say that?
I don't know.
Do you have the quotes?
I have the quotes here.
Or the audio.
We can even play it.
Yeah, why don't we play the audio?
Let's get the audio.
Rutherford Quinn Hughes.
And while I'm looking this up.
R-U-T-H.
While I'm looking this up, the other thing I should mention is the Pittsburgh Penguins also have an opening.
And Talk It Won a Cup there.
Jesse, I think I have it.
Yeah, Mike Sullivan done with the Penguinos.
So there's seven head coaching positions open right now.
uh yes so this is the trouble getting a hold of quinn hughes
i don't know why he felt the need to say any of this but bless him you had a chance jim to talk
to uh your captain and uh knowing how he felt about rick i think most of the players felt as
quinn felt about rick uh do you do you worry about what their long-term ramifications would
be with him wanting to stay yeah well i hope he's playing golf because he usually returns my calls
right away and i called him within a half an hour after i talked to rick so uh he hasn't called me
back yet um knowing how he feels about the coach and that he's a sensitive guy i would suspect that
he's feels like i do we're disappointed but knowing the maturity of quinn he will make the adjustment
necessary but they did have a very strong relationship a very good one and uh Quinn
had a lot of respect for him and talk had a lot of respect for Quinn does New Jersey fire Sheldon
Keefe and hire Rick Talkett wow because remember he wants to play with his he wants to play with
his brothers right but if you're the devils you're like well no your coach and two brothers it's a
really it's a spicy idea they're not gonna do it I know but you know what I mean we're not gonna
Talk about this?
Well, I mean, what the hell is he rambling on about?
It's about the Leafs.
It's still about the Leafs somehow.
What the hell is Jim Rutherford doing?
Oh, I don't know, dude.
Why are you saying I tried to call him and I couldn't call him?
I hope he's golfing.
You could just say, just say.
I didn't have the chance.
We haven't had the chance to connect yet.
Well, or just say nothing.
And then he calls him a sensitive guy.
Yeah, I know.
Like, what?
What is happening?
You're a sensitive guy.
You're a rambling guy.
Quinn Hughes posts on his Instagram, and Bleach Report put that image on this video, of him at the Knicks game.
Yeah.
So, like, Quinn Hughes knew that Jim Rutherford called him, and he was at the Knicks game, and he posted this on his story?
Yeah.
Like, what?
This is, you know, I don't understand, man.
Canadian markets, the fans, the media, they really fan the flames.
Anyway, excuse me while I light this rag stuck into a bottle of moonshine.
And you just throw it into a dry field.
What are you doing, Jim?
I honestly think he shouldn't be at podiums.
This is, again, you killed the man, but not the idea.
Jim Benning rides again.
Alvin is not as quotable.
You could have just had him.
No, but, like, even his Brock Besser thing was stupid.
Like, what are you doing?
Well, and, like, Jim Rutherford, what was it, last week,
was the tampering one where he wanted to bring Jack to the team,
and then now he's doing this.
He shouldn't be talking.
Talk it.
No.
Hey.
Oh, hey.
I always feel like, you know, everybody's like,
oh, Vancouver reporters.
They're so, like, they are at a very intense media market, right?
Very, very intense.
Like the Oilers, like the Canadians, like the Leafs, right?
But, like, the meat that you get thrown in Vancouver
compared to what you get thrown in Edmonton and Toronto.
I think Montreal is, like, a little bit of a different thing
because they literally follow the players around.
But, like, in Vancouver,
that organization just gives them raw meat.
all like just just feeding the tigers nobody said anything like all year here in toronto no
and like the little stuff people might have said like the marner news the rancid and trade and all
that that wasn't even like his doing you know he had to respond to all of that the the canadian
like the canadian media is the reason why none of these canadian teams can win and from like six
seven eight months out of the year it's reporters going excuse me do you hope your team wins tonight
well uh Quinn Hughes uh he wasn't around I don't know if he's gonna show up today I couldn't reach
him on the phone and uh he's a sensitive guy hope he's doing well like what enjoy that golf
ball game okay I'll be sure to write that down I I just asked you how your day was going Jim
Jim what is your favorite color well you know this team I don't know if they could ever win
a game ever again with me at the helm uh you know pedersen i don't know if i want him here
i wish i could bring jt miller back uh okay uh we now go to patrick alvin um
but i i know you wanted to talk about brock besser i just want to know what are you wearing
i can't get shit for brock besser so i'm gonna let him walk for nothing in free agency i couldn't
get shit he's useless it's crazy i can't believe how nobody wants brock besser okay well reporting
live for sportsnet vancouver it's all our fault what are you doing no the media is just being
served everything on the planet they are it's beautiful i listen i like it i wish that was
doing oh i wish that imagine shanahan just goes up to the podium he's like yeah mitch
fucking didn't show up
like what why didn't you trade him i couldn't get shipped austin won't answer my call i called
up edmonton i said austin for mcdavid they said no no i couldn't do it and it's literally like
would you read over the summer yeah oh man the toronto media just foaming in the mouth
it's just mark masters asking him so like uh you have a good day mark math dude if you're looking
at Mark Masters and going,
no wonder you keep getting stuffed into a locker
in the playoffs. Mark Masters, Jonas Siegel,
Chris Johnson. Are these guys too hard
on you? Oh, man. They're terrifying.
Three of the most fair
people I've ever met. Mike Sullivan
out in Pittsburgh, as we mentioned.
Schur smells like New York.
Schur's got New York stapled
to him, I think. Arthur's stapled.
Arthur's stapled.
Somebody's on a freaking roll.
It's the
Tim Hortons. Is that what it is?
Uh, also Fenway Sports Group, who've done a lot of, um, a lot of cuts, uh, specifically
to the Penguins in non-hockey roles in the last 12 months, uh, are now looking at potentially
selling some equity.
I mean, obviously the, any Red Sox fan will tell you that they've done a terrible job
and they, you know, they, they love increasing value.
They hate any sort of, what do you mean we're not making more profit than last quarter?
If they make less profit than last quarter, then they've lost money, but that's not
losing money that's just less profit and the red sox like their fans have been befuddled for years
are the red sox and penguins the buffalo sabers to the bills that is liverpool maybe
because liverpool fenway owns all three of yeah liverpool red sox and penguins one of them
is great. Two of them are butt.
Butt. Yep.
Teams with coaching vacancies right
now, the Ducks, looks like Quinville.
Bruins, nobody yet. Blackhawks,
Carl said no. Rangers,
Flyers, Pens, and Kraken. Don't forget about
the Kraken. They need a coach too.
So we'll see who they'll hire. You want a prediction?
I don't think you want
to make a ton of noise that you hired Joel Quinville.
If the Ducks
go and announce that,
night of the draft lottery. Oh,
so you just, yeah, okay.
uh and lastly before if we're going to do the press conference i'm not sure if we are
uh norris finalists have been announced hughes mccarr and rowinsky and i just want to say
i had two of three of those guys on both of my fantasy teams this year uh suck rowinsky i would
always get like the 20th pick though it was crazy like he was he was completely underrated guys
when you look if you were voting norris would you because two of these guys did not make the
playoffs and the argument if you remember against conor mcdavid getting the heart trophy versus
taylor hall getting the heart trophy was the devils made the playoffs that year uh-huh does
that make kale mccarr an automatic uh for me it does because it's not like the other two were
miles better and like quinn had a season you know sidetracked and you know you there this isn't the
ifs and buts trophy if it was carol caprizova win the heart this year too right so i mean quinn i
mean um mccarr didn't he have like 30 goals you got to give it to him jess oh yeah i think it's
so easy i think mccarr is going to win the norris and he deserves it if the other two were able to
drag their team in the playoffs it's a lot closer but they weren't able to especially wierenski
like wierenski could have got hurt trophy yeah man he would be crazy if the blue jackets made
the playoffs but if ifs and buts were candy and nuts we'd all have a merry christmas that's right
And we're not going to have a Merry Christmas this year because the Leafs are going to lose.
No, but I think Makar is going to win in a walk.
I want to ask this one last thing.
Does your performance at Four Nations, because it's an NHL-sanctioned event, would it count towards your Norris vote, do you think?
No.
No?
No.
I mean, like, subliminally.
Hughes was injured, but I feel like Makar was unbelievable, and Wierenski was pretty good.
no well i mean some reporters might have their opinion colored by that but it is that is the
wrong way to approach it we definitely need uh a defensive defenseman of the year award we have a
defensive forward of the year award how is it like jake slavin should win that basically every year
yeah uh but like you know like a chris tana of type those guys never get no they don't get any
and again you saw jake slavin on the national spotlight during the four nations you're like
holy crap and he's like that every season and and you forget sometimes i feel like it's time for the
nhl to add that award it is because these guys are all big points guys what's wrong with celebrating
more people you know yeah in there that's true okay april is testicular cancer awareness month
and movember the leading charity dedicated to changing the face of men's health is encouraging
men across the country to know thy nuts and regularly check them for changes or inconsistencies
informing them on what to do
if they come across something that isn't normal.
And one of the things we hate to do
is go to the doctor and talk about it.
Yes.
Are nuts.
Yes.
Hey, doc, listen, let's have a chat about nuts.
It's not as hard as you think,
and yet there's like an embarrassment factor there.
Yeah, you can go to your doctor and say,
isn't that nuts?
And they say, we call them testicles in our field.
Oh, no.
What? It's very good.
One in four Canadian young men would not visit a doctor
unless their testicles were in extreme pain.
Yeah, that's bad.
That's bad.
We've got to change that, right?
So go to Movember.com slash KnowThyNuts for more information.
And testicular cancer survivor testimonials are there, too.
And it kind of helps you with what they did.
And the interesting thing about it is that it is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men aged 15 to 40.
It's a young man's cancer.
Right.
So it's something to absolutely look out for.
Again, it is Movember.com slash KnowThyNuts.

You're richer than you think.
Do we want to do the press conference or should we wrap?
Well, there's some hockey stuff that we haven't done.
I don't know if you realize, but we haven't even done a show since the last time Florida and Tampa played.
So, like, since Ekblad punched.
Oh, yeah.
I guess I didn't get the flying elbow in there.
I did not remember that.
And then he got suspended in the meantime.
So we haven't even reacted to the play.
Yeah, but not before scoring the game-tying goal.
Yeah.
So that entire game happened.
So, okay.
First off, I think they got the suspension, right?
I think that's not the debatable part.
Do you want me to play Department of Flare Safety?
Yeah.
Hit me up.
So, Matty, you're going to pull this off.
Here we go.
Department of Player Safety on why Ekblad got two games.
This is Brandy.
Love it.
Monday night in Florida, Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad
delivered a high, forceful elbow to the head of Lightning forward Brandon Hagel.
As the video shows, the Lightning worked the puck up the half wall to Hagel,
with Ekblad pinching down from the point position.
Hagel collects the puck and plays it off the wall.
He knew what he was doing.
As he does, Ekblad takes his right hand off of his stick, raises his elbow,
pulls it back, and uses the extended arm to deliver a blow that strikes Hegel in the head with force, causing an injury.
This is elbowing.
It is important to note that while we have heard Ekblad's contention that he does not intend to strike Hegel in the head,
this is not a case where a blow to an opponent's torso or shoulder rides up and makes subsequent or glancing contact with his head.
this is a direct blow to an opponent's head with an extended elbow delivered with requisite force
for supplemental discipline to summarize this is elbowing hagel suffered an injury on the play
oh that has been either fined nor suspended previously by the department of player safety
in a 732 game no relevant history is interesting i think that's new injury the fact that they
acknowledge that they put injury on key points is that a new thing or have we seen i've never
seen that uh i've seen it mentioned i don't know if i've seen it on the screen yeah as like the
second bullet point on the key points yeah anyways that's the injury that's the suspension two games
but he stayed in the game how do you how do you take back a goal that he scored well this is the
thing like it's ill-gotten how can you not how can you not at least as a ref call the major
and review it how do you not do that yeah how do you not do what if paul maurice isn't my friend
anymore these guys are horrible at their jobs like they're really bad i don't know i think you
asked me on the pre-stream like did the refs change the outcome of that game you know by not
calling that and how do you look at this other than the refs changed what could have happened
on the ice yes because that guy scored the game-winning goal and he should have not been
on the ice and mikula got kicked out later yeah and they should have been down two defensemen if
everything kind of played out how it would have well and Mikula only got the fine and for me like
I've said there's a few straight shows now I'm looking at it going I'm really loving my idea of
suspending guys for like one or two periods yeah because he got he got that him only getting the
fine there I actually kind of understand because he got a five-minute major and what could have
been a very costly five-minute major in what could have been a very costly game it just happens that
the lightning screwed it up um so he gets the fine and that act black got nothing nothing during the
game during the game but that's relevant because the panthers were down he's the one who tied it
should not have been on the ice and we'll never know what would have happened maybe the panthers
would have won by more yeah we can't go to that universe and the panthers like you said might
have scored five goals instead like randomly i i say if artem zoob doesn't hit tavaris in the head
leaves probably win the series in four uh it didn't happen did it and now they blew it in game
five and yada yada so we don't live in these alternate realities but that's a bad one yeah
and and it makes them look worse that he got suspended and i don't want the conversation
to sound like a lightning cope conversation because you mentioned it there they should
have executed on the power play yes but the panthers have done a spectacular job this entire
series of taking away what the lightning are best at and that's setting up nikita kucherov on the
power play to do whatever he wants and whether it's get a nice playmaking assist or score the
goal himself they've been completely shut out in the power play and then andre vasovsky should
have had the game winning goal like it shouldn't have slipped under his his elbow there nope he's
He's not been good enough.
And when I watch the Ekblad elbow, I'm like,
so from the Bruins-Panthers series last year,
when Bennett flew in and punched Marchand in the face,
someone explain why Ekblad got two games and that got nothing.
Someone explain that to me like I'm five.
Wow, how many Stein sticks you got?
Oh, my God.
What has Colin Campbell done for you lately?
Actually, yeah, Brad must have soft-signed in sticks
because I would have thought he would have got the benefit of the doubt on that one.
Colin Campbell's son works for the Panthers.
That's not necessarily a related fact.
It's just a fact.
Yeah.
Yep.
Anything else?
Yes.
There's so much going on in the NHL right now,
so it's hard to keep up with everything.
But Stevie Y, if people missed the Red Wings locker cleanout,
because they did theirs a little later than I think everybody else doing it.
It was yesterday or the day before.
He got asked directly about Jake Wallman.
And the interaction he has with the media is the most awkward thing in the world
because they're asking him to admit his mistake.
And will Stevie Iyai do it?
No.
So here's his response to what happened with Jake Wallman.
Oh, you spoiled it.
I think a lot of the fan base at the trade deadline wonder about Jake Wallman
when you find out he goes to Edmonton and they gave up a first-rounder for him
and you guys had to attach a pick to send him.
Can you shed a little insight on Wallman
and you'll correct that move, I guess, considering you still need defense.
No and no.
No and no?
Yeah.
No and no.
Okay.
That's it?
Sorry, I'm just not going to elaborate on it.
Why not?
Because I choose not to.
There's things I don't want to share with you.
All right, get back here.
What things?
That's not great.
That's not a good look.
I mean, that is a guy.
If he's Kyle Dubas, he gets fired on the Gardner.
that's dubas got fired for less yep uh maybe not he said he didn't want to do it anymore
but that was pretty bad and dumb and he shouldn't have done it but he they showed him by giving him
a promotion in a race um i think if it's somebody else that's a lot worse if steve forget that quote
steve eiserman should have been fired two years ago but his name is steve eiserman
look at look at ottawa in the playoffs and like why isn't that us look at montreal in the playoffs
and why isn't that us look at detroit now and say how could that be us stevie why he's gotta go
that's okay why did you attach a second round pick to a good player to get rid of him and then
less than a year later in a season where he was injured he got traded for a first round pick
and i'm gonna be a spoiled brat about it and just huffy and and like the reporter so reporters in
some cases are asking ego stroking stuff and they're trying to make themselves look smart
or they're trying to make themselves look bad or not themselves look bad make the person they're
asking the questions to look bad detroit red wings fans are legitimately asking what the hell
is going on when it comes to that series of events the they attach wallman wait i remember
when it broke we were all like wait who gets the second round you paid to get why for what
and then uh the sharks go and get this bounty for him fans are legitimately asking that question
and the reporter is asking for the fans that's a great question and eisman was literally a brat
about it a whiny little brat about it but because he's steve eisenman he gets a pass i'm sorry
that's unacceptable you've been someone who i think has been the most critical out of the three
of us out of stevie wise job that he's done over the last couple yeah no one pushes back when i'm
hard on stevie why always dubas i don't know why i'm hard on both of those guys yeah and and
nobody's ever been like you're wrong about stevie why all the people agree with oh yeah there's more
evidence that Dubas knows what he's doing.
I suppose there is.
Like, look at the Penguins. They have all
these draft picks. But Stevie Y built the lightning
that won all those cups.
He didn't. He left the season before they
won. Did he get them across the line? Yeah.
I'm giving all that. Seeing how this
played out. You can't give all of that to Breezewell.
I'm giving it to Breezewell. The majority.
60-40.
Listen, I'll say this.
Seeing this quote, are you adding this
to your Rolodex of, like, I'm right?
I mean, what would I say at this point?
Like, Red Wings fans know.
They know.
They know.
They're just waiting for the Illich family to know.
And the Illich family has a long and tenured history with Stevie Y,
and it's hard to fire your friends.
It's hard to fire your friends.
It is.
Especially a friend that's done.
Friends?
Franchise icons.
Who revived the brand.
Yes.
People forget what the Red Wings were in the 80s when he showed up.
He's one of the top ten scorers of all time.
Yeah.
Gold medal winner.
stanley cup winner yes it's hard to fire that captain um it's time oh my gosh it's freaking
time man i don't know like every year every year we do this i i know what's gonna happen
we're gonna have we're gonna the red wings are gonna go sign a bunch of uh uh uh patrick kane
tarasenko ass contract fans are too smart and and they're not gonna like those moves no no i
steve i know that but what what hockey people are gonna tell me is oh you know what i think
the red wings are good this year i think they got it because you know montreal they could fall
you never know Ottawa well there was their first year in the you never know how the wild card could
look hey the Leafs lost in game seven they blew it up you never you know and and every year it's
like oh the Red Wings ah they did remember a couple years ago they did well in October and
everybody's like Adam you're an idiot see look they're great who plays on the left of uh Marner
and Larkin great question great question Justin Hall um I I I just at at a certain point uh and
And listen, I know, I am aware of a team, I watch a team, I follow a team
that doesn't make changes despite the evidence.
I know what it looks like.
Takes one to know one, right?
Yep.
Oh, boy.
Stevie, why, buddy?
Any other exec gets cooked for that.
Yep.
And like, when did he make that comment?
Seven goalies at training camp, man.
Seven goalies.
Seven goalies.
When did he make that comment?
Today?
Yesterday, the day before?
Yesterday.
How did I not even see it?
Yeah, they did the clean out.
I'm not sure if it was yesterday.
He really does just get a free pass.
I forget.
All the days blend together.
It was yesterday.
It was yesterday.
He better send, like, edible arrangements or something to Jim Rutherford
that he dominated headlines instead of that garbage.
That's worse.
Oh, yeah.
That's way worse.
I saw that, and I was like, I need to play this for the guys.
That's trash.
Good catch, Jesse.
We didn't even get the chance to do the Boston one,
and the Boston one was really good.
Yeah, the Boston one.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, it's just there's been so much going on.
Adam, what's on your screen?
It's the Utah Mammoth logo, I think.
Is it official?
Well, it's on their YouTube.
It is officially, if you go to Utah Mammoth NHL and then YouTube, okay?
So their YouTube page basically is at Utah Mammoth.
Okay.
So if you look at the Utah Hockey Club, it is now at Utah Mammoth.
Oh, my gosh.
So I'm assuming that's what it is.
Oh, you said logo.
Well, so the logo is from David Edigway, who is a sports management hockey agent,
and not officially from the team.
So I was looking at it.
It looks real sick, though.
I was trying to find—
Oh, that's the same logo they were showing before.
At the games?
At the hockey games.
Yeah, yeah.
So I'm not totally sure that that is actually the logo.
Yeah, it's kind of too cliparty.
I think they'll do better with that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
I like it.
It looks cool.
No, I still like it, though.
It's a mountain, but it's also a mammoth, you see?
Because there's mountains.
No, it's all right.
That's clever as shit.
Yeah, that's all right.
Oh, I didn't even notice that.
Okay, yeah.
No, that's not the same one then.
That was just the...
Do we want to bring it up?
I don't know.
No, that's fine.
Yeah, it's okay.
Well, we can do it next episode if you want.
All right.
It's not officially announced yet.
I can't wait for the logo to look nothing like it.
Yeah, we can wait for the official one.
Anyway, all right.
Shall we wrap here?
Yeah, I didn't get to rant about Mackenzie Blackwood.
He might cost Jared Bednar his job.
Is he bad?
He bad.
What else?
You've got time.
Go.
That's it.
Also, don't take dumb penalties when you get the game to 3-2.
Like, Colorado cost themselves that game.
And Dallas is playing so well now.
Like, I'm scared for Jared Bednar.
What is your favorite brand of chip?
Well, I hope everybody who's sensitive calls me.
