Starting point is 00:00:00 Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer. That's why every step and dollar raised matters. On September 19th, join thousands in Toronto for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation Walk. Challenge yourself, friends, and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research. Together, we can carry the fire
Starting point is 00:00:22 and help create a world free from the fear of cancer. Register today at pmcfwalk.ca. is that a private plane outside our windows i'm pretty sure and it's if you if you here wait let me let me it says from anaheim on the side oh wow wow it's crazy that's unbelievable i saw a uh the internet is just a buzz about Ohtani at the time of this recording. John Paul Morosi saying it could happen as early as tonight. Who knows? But it would be nice.
Starting point is 00:01:08 One thing I thought you guys would find really interesting about this is Japanese media is talking about the effect on them. Because Shoei Ohtani has Japanese media following him at all times. Yes. And you've experienced this when you went to the Yankees clubhouse back in the day, right? I'm so glad that you remember this story. So when I was an intern at the Fan 590 before, it was called Sportsnet 590, The Fan,
Starting point is 00:01:37 I got to see some like crazy visiting teams come through Toronto. And the interns only got to do the visiting room. But like back in 2008 or 2009 when I was doing this, you'd rather do the visiting room than the Jays. Like they had Halliday and no one else, basically. It's like John McDonald. Jeff Fry Scott Rowland
Starting point is 00:01:59 I like Scott Rowland man but like Johnny Damon I got to be in the same clubhouse as Ken Griffey Jr that's cool at the end of his career with the Japanese media well then the Yankees come to town
Starting point is 00:02:14 and it's the most North American media I've ever seen in my life and the Japanese media outnumbered them and who were they there for Hideki Matsui I think Ichiro wasn't there? He wasn't a Yankee yet. There might have...
Starting point is 00:02:28 He wasn't on the Yankees at the time? If he was on the Yankees, I don't know if he was in the lineup. You would have known. Yeah. The answer is no if you can't remember. That would have been your memory, is I was in the room with Ichiro.
Starting point is 00:02:41 The visiting manager's office that they put the media into is smaller than this room. It's smaller than the room we're in right now, and I know you can't all see. yeah nobody can see the size of this room but like imagine this room with 30 people in it right it's too much so imagine a room smaller than this with 30 people i was like literally i was holding my recorder like this and i just like happened to get a good spot next to whoever the manager was i
Starting point is 00:03:09 can't remember so the japanese media are they upset because they're gonna have to like travel to more countries so now if he's if uh otani signs in canada so an la time sports reporter is talking about this and he said for some japanese reporters shohei otani's decision uh could dramatically change their lives because if otani decides to leave los angeles because you know again the the angels are in on this the giants are in on this they're just down the road uh and and then obviously the dodgers but if they if he goes to toronto uh they and their families will have to move oh because they live here in north america full-time to cover otani yes as reporters and they one of the and it's an la times article today but it says one of the quotes it's
Starting point is 00:03:52 not so stressful we're just nervous uh they're hoping it'll be los angeles because they don't want to move because who would want to leave la well i get it but also like i don't know if your entire job is to follow shohei otani uh that's kind of what you signed up for man yeah it's like there's uh there's lots of lebron media who's covered him for for years and he was in cleveland for a long time then they had to move all out to la yeah which was the better yeah better do you think they're like miami abland la you know do you think the taylor swift guy who got hired to cover taylor swift gets mad when she goes on tour uh i don't think so no i don't think so there is a isn't there a taylor swift usa today reporter that's what i'm talking yeah i don't think that's
Starting point is 00:04:32 what i'm saying um uh so apparently um and this is just uh this is just speculation but from sam sito on uh who is twitter just a just a person yeah uh tomorrow today is a day of luck in japan uh it is also the anniversary of his signing with the angels in 2017 there is a private flight booked from anaheim to toronto on a bombardier jet canadian made uh a model that shohei otani has been known to fly on um and i guess it's i guess it's called boaty day the john boy trying to pronounce bombardier was hilarious bombader bombader yeah it was around where he tried to he got to it was not close bombardier is a pretty well-known international brand i'm surprised it's a very canadian word i guess i guess yeah anyway this is a day of luck uh goes
Starting point is 00:05:26 stretches back 2500 years whoa so we're hoping we're we're crossing our fingers i'm trying to not get too excited yeah me too because this will be the greatest thing that's ever happened to anybody like just in terms of everybody who's a baseball fan it'll just be the coolest day ever if he signs here and i don't want it to not happen so i can't get excited for it to happen because i'm going to be so disappointed if i get too excited uh we know someone who may or may not be associated with this network who decided to buy tickets to five jays games today because in their words they wanted to do it before the site crashes oh it'll be it was it was a very smart idea and i'm not gonna lie i also got tickets to the home open oh my god you know what i should
Starting point is 00:06:12 we should probably all get by them yeah that's probably a good idea it's probably a really good idea it was i was like you know what cj you got something yeah max domi just tweeted uh lfg blue jays there's nothing max domi just tweeted that max domi rarely tweets um wearing shohei otani there's also this rumor and i just this is where it's gotten to right in toronto there's a rumor that you say kikuchi has has booked a uh a private party for 50 people at the rogers center at a sushi restaurant i didn't know there was a sushi restaurant in rogers center uh but apparently there is and uh yeah who knows i mean listen it's kind of one of those things so steven jesse you're talking right now i have no idea i am not talking i'm trying to set something up what do you got
Starting point is 00:06:55 what do you got so uh it's clarence frazier you're talking about the dude who talked about the did you see carlo koliakovo's response what did carlo say so carlo koliakovo formerly if he's on the radio up here in toronto uh he said i hope your source isn't me who shared this news on first up 10 50 this morning because someone texted it into our show this morning saying this and i made it very clear that this was not a credible report but just something we joked about so i don't know if that's right listen uh this sounded an awful lot like the uh ristalainen news you know yeah adam and steve you know somebody at the grocery store said something and they go and they talk about man i've been saying the ristalainen thing is is ridiculous
Starting point is 00:07:41 now cj show talked yesterday that what did they say the leafs have had a look and i'm like they've had show hey the show didn't say that they didn't say that what did they say they said you guys are a little too horny for trades and need to calm down i am never gonna not be horny for trades all right what is this don't tell me to not fan specific words it's three months to the deadline we have time no no no also the the guys that were reporting it i think it was the fourth period were like elliot friedman said they'd had a look or something like that i don't remember what he said in 32,000 like see we were right all along the the leafs are in on and i'm Like, the Leafs, okay, that is a stretch.
Starting point is 00:08:19 And the Leafs have to look at literally everybody if they're looking to improve the defense. He wrote that in the column on, when is he right? Wednesday. And then on the podcast today, he says he received pushback on the Ristolano news. Of course he did. It wasn't real, you guys.
Starting point is 00:08:32 Let's stop. It's not a fit. It's just not a fit. Like, if you're a Leaf fan, you already know this. But, like, every time you see a trade rumor and it's a player that the Leafs would probably never get, and you have to remember, right? Yes, Brad Treliving is the new GM in town, but every other person in the front office besides Jason Spezza is still the same as it's been for the last five years, including the president who gets to confirm or deny every single trade.
Starting point is 00:08:59 Well, also, we know the Leafs are shopping for a right-handed defenseman because that is a good logical assumption on the account of they don't have any. So any right-handed defenseman who's out there, you could literally make the rumor up. You could just lie. Yes. You could just guess. And you still have a solid chance of being right. Sure. I should tweet it right now.
Starting point is 00:09:23 I also look at this and think like, you know, again, if you're a rival GM and you're wanting to dump a contract and I know the Flyers are doing well, but I think that I think that they'd like to get out of that Risto contract while he's still playing well, because you never know when the other shoe is going to drop playing well. Well, playing well enough, playing up to five ish million dollars in value to somebody. No, they want to they want to drop this guy. It's a lot like and I hate to say this, what the Leafs did with Dion Phaneuf, what they did to the senators. and no one talks about this and I think people should go back and have a look at it. Dion Phaneuf was well past his best years
Starting point is 00:09:58 when he was in Toronto and that contract was going to be a boat anchor for a long time. So what they did, I think it was Lou's first year here and Mike, was Babcock even playing for him? I don't even remember. But they sheltered him
Starting point is 00:10:09 and they made his numbers look great and then they traded him to Ottawa. It was called a pump and dump and they did have to take some weird money back. Yeah. But it wasn't great and I think, I'm not a Ristolainen guy at all
Starting point is 00:10:23 admittedly not at all but like I think this is the Philadelphia Flyers going how the hell do we get rid of this guy they almost made it to the Stanley Cup final with Dion Phaneuf I'm just gonna throw that yeah but it wasn't because of Dion Phaneuf Steve it was 100% yeah well it couldn't have been Eric Carlson firing bombs down to Mike Hoffman uh like Super Bowl fucking passes to him no it couldn't be Cody Ceci they were a goal away from the Stanley Cup final with the decor featuring Dion Phaneuf and Cody Cece every night. I'm just going to throw that. The deal was Dion Phaneuf, Matt Fratton, Ryan Rupert, Casey Bailey,
Starting point is 00:10:57 and Cody Donaghy to the Ottawa Senators. So just a big old bunch of contracts. So much so that the Leafs traded Matt Fratton to Ottawa, and they just let him continue to play for the Marlies. The Leafs got Colin Greening, who was a... Valuable. No, he was a fucking double agent for the Sens trying to screw up their odds at Austin Matthews.
Starting point is 00:11:20 Oh, I see. Because I think he had 15 points in 30 games or something like that. He was too good. That's the problem. It's eyes on the prize, Colin. You're fucking it up. Milan Mihalic, who the Leafs royally screwed. Jared Cowan, Tobias Lindberg, and a second-round pick
Starting point is 00:11:35 who turned into a great player for the Leafs. Just kidding. It was Emily Rassanen, who I don't even think he made it to double-digit games for the Marlies. that's that's tough all i'm saying is i don't was right five you played five i'm sure people have sourced their stories i'm not doubting their sources all i'm saying is i genuinely doubt that any of those sources are from within the leafs organization i genuinely do uh except for the ones that are pushing back i don't think ristolainen's a fit i think yeah brad trill
Starting point is 00:12:04 living might have made it might have tried to make a trade with buffalo two years ago but he didn't sign him to that stupid contract it's too long it's too much money the guy's never been that good well adam i just got a breaking story what is it uh someone closed erasmus wrist the line and just booked uh 50 seats at grace o'malley oh grace o'malley i couldn't matt maddie's even like oh gosh yeah so malley's is a is a abs is a college bar in toronto and it is wild in there yeah you can't go in past i couldn't think of a finish bar um yeah so uh so anyway uh the leafs shopping it's going to be a while uh when people like cj tell you to calm down about trades you tell cj no sir i i won't i don't want to say something insulting back because i love cj
Starting point is 00:12:51 but i will say no i'm a fan i don't calm down for anything except for shohei otani because i might break my heart i shan't be quenched um christopher so the leafs last night played a horrible game and somehow won um but the real story this morning is uh the real story this morning should be the fact that they got their first regulation win since sweden oh my god oh wow uh my god or that joseph wall had the game of his life and steve made an amazing trade on his on his fantasy team but joseph wall will miss some time and we don't know really what it was yet but it was a bit of an awkward sort of thing and he couldn't get off the ice on his own steam are we worried so cj said we were too thirsty for trades right and what did i want i wanted
Starting point is 00:13:42 the leafs to get some defensemen right uh the leafs not making a trade resulted in joseph wall being out for the next month why okay because how okay what we don't we don't know how wall got hurt we don't know how his muscles and ligaments went all splody it's because we made him make three save of the year candidates in a span of like a couple hours oh man like their shitty defense jesse their shitty defense got him hurt jesse why are you laughing i just don't know if that's true oh no it just it just happened his bones just went that's enough joseph and he went oh now i'm gonna have to spend the next month playing with legos as i recover no no they made his workload too friggin hard now the shots i think were misleading because the first period
Starting point is 00:14:42 the the sends outside of that breakaway goal obviously were a muffin factory they were just floating garbage on joseph wolf from the blue line uh like just inside the blue line i don't remember when the first tarasenko robbery was if that was the first or second period that was the first period it was the first period so okay i remember correctly he made he faced like two genuinely terrifying shots in tarasenko and then the breakaway there's two tarasenkos the second tarasenko was in the second period yeah yeah so but first period when they outshot the leaf 16 to 8 like a lot of the vast majority of that 16 was hot garbage um i didn't think they were outchancing the least that badly and i like the term muffin factory muffin factory just firing
Starting point is 00:15:27 badge top of the muffin to you yeah and for as good as uh now i want a muffin thanks but only the top only the top yes uh they should have a bakery just for that has anyone done that idea we keep going please we should film a 22 minute show about it i think we should amen it's for commercial let's keep going yes um for as good as joseph wool was whoo anton forsberg was bad yeah Leafs got five shots in the second period two of them went in um a solid at least two of those four goals you like a save there arguably three um but like the the I didn't think the Leafs were overall that bad but the chances they gave up were goals like they were goals and joseph wool made them two goals instead of five yeah he he held them in that game and and
Starting point is 00:16:25 on the other end of the ice like i buy the the argument about goaltenders who sit sit for a while at one end of the ice and there's no shots coming at them and then all of a sudden there's a break and there's a shot it is tough for goalies because they're they're better when they're in a group you know you're better when you're consistently working and if you're just sitting there cold at one of the so i felt bad for forsberg and like the max domey goal um the one uh he assisted on oh yarn crow yeah that was great yarn crow goal but it was the max domey goal yeah you know he did all the work there and fed it right to yarn croak on a stick to tap it through like something like that is has nothing to do with the goaltender no that's your player at center eyes losing his
Starting point is 00:17:02 stick there's a broken stick in the middle of the ice a breakdown it's a three on one and max domey makes a nice plate of yarn croak so forsberg i don't know how much i blame on him but the uh They couldn't get anything going with Ottawa in terms of stopping the Leafs. So, and I want to say this. I know you, Steve, especially, has been like, that's not going to be their third line going into the playoffs. I keep looking at that line and going, what are they doing wrong? Why wouldn't they be?
Starting point is 00:17:26 Well, Sheldon Keefe, like for a brief period of time in that game, made them the fourth line. The fourth line, you know how the first line is like, whatever has this guy on it or whatever? They used to say that about Zach Hyman. The fourth line is whatever line has Ryan Reeves on it. Yeah. So he did not get promoted to Domi and Robertson.
Starting point is 00:17:45 Those two got demoted to Reeves. Right. So they did that for a little bit. I really don't know what we're doing here. Well, I saw, here's the thing. When Ryan Reeves is on the ice, you see him skate. He goes into the corner in the offensive zone, maybe like half a hit, and then he skates off immediately.
Starting point is 00:18:01 I don't know. He hasn't had a fight. That's why the Sens got that second goal. I believe, if I'm quoting Kevin Pettyright, I don't believe he's had a fight since October 14th. He hasn't had a fight since the second game against Marcus Foligno. So what are we doing? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:18:15 I don't know. I don't know. Like Bobby McMahon was really good. I don't know. I like that fourth line with Bobby McMahon on it. I don't know. He's McMahon-like. They talk about the...
Starting point is 00:18:28 Before the season, they talked about what they want, and they want snot. I'm not doing revisionist history here. Sam Lafferty had snot. Yeah. He played with snot. He was an asshole. he would hit and he would fight and he could take the occasional face off and play center if you
Starting point is 00:18:43 really needed him to and do the right wing and what what did we do what the what did we do adam you're you're talking about like what's the point of having him out there you know yes he's coming on coming off ryan reeves had one shift above 50 seconds for the entire game so the idea that he's running on and running off very true and the one shift that he have had above 50 seconds was 56 seconds and was the one that he was on there was a goal and i think we could all agree that we don't want him on the ice for 56 seconds i think that's a bad that means something's gone if you watch my stream yeah if you watched my stream last night that line was in the ozone in the third period and i was even like oh he's on the ice in the third yeah interesting uh and they were in the
Starting point is 00:19:29 offensive zone and i'm like this is good that's good it's a good fourth line shift and then the puck starts going the other way i'm like all right get off and then he didn't and he stayed out there and they allowed a goal and i'm not even saying it was his fault but every time something bad happens you're always around you i just when you look at a player who's who shifts in the middle of the game are 25 seconds 28 seconds 28 seconds 30 seconds it's it's a waste of a roster spot at some point what's the point of running somebody out there to do 30 seconds of cardio and then get off the ice you know go out throw one one check and then get off and if you're on for more than 50 seconds you're gonna allow a goal yeah that's a waste of a roster spot at this point
Starting point is 00:20:12 and you see the senators they'll swarm them they'll put two guys on them because they know if the puck goes anywhere near them they're gonna come away you can't handle the puck and and i and this is again i hate this because i want ryan reeves to do well i actually do think he's good for the dressing room i think people are human beings i think they do need a vibes guy in the dressing room and I have no problem with the Leafs playing him 20 to 30 games I said 40 before I'm gonna bring it back a little bit uh but maybe once every five games what's this two games in a row stuff and and you know if you're Sheldon Keefe for whatever reason DJ Smith kind of has your number uh their matchups are their head-to-heads not very good and the Senators record in the last
Starting point is 00:20:54 five years has been horrible and DJ Smith has been the coach for all of it and yet every single time the senators play the leafs they come out fucking firing and i i'm not i'm trying to understand why you wouldn't dress your best lineup against a team that plays you well who cares that they're in last place in the eastern conference which by the way they are last place behind the bluejack some of that it's games played oh yes partially gameplay they're like six games back of some of the other teams in the conference i just i just kind of look at that and i go ah maybe that's not the best how much would it how much would it cost to get like three decent toronto-based comedians and a dj on retainer for a year and would it be less than 1.35 million yes
Starting point is 00:21:38 they wouldn't count against the cap you could have them hang around the team keep the vibes immaculate make balloon animals like do whatever you need to do like guys what are we doing here we always need a friggin we need a vibes guy all the time and it never works but steve i don't think that i don't think that they are wrong they do need a vibes guy i agree dubas knew that they needed a vibes guy tra living knows that they need a vibes guy and i put that squarely on the personalities when this team was constructed they did not account for that they just they i and i i love the leafs reliance on numbers so please don't take this the wrong way but I do think there was not enough put into let's what's about what about the mix of personalities
Starting point is 00:22:22 I look at Austin outside of like his media scrums has apparently a great like hilarious guy no he's got a personality Mitch has got a personality yeah um uh Willie apparently is a riot John Tavares is apparently super nice guy but when you get into um a hard situation we have seen these guys we've seen the body language so I do think they need a vibes guy I'll die on the And if that's a problem, that's not a big problem to solve. I just think, listen, if Ryan Reeves is that guy this year, great. Fantastic. I will die on the hill that Nick Foligno was the right guy at the time.
Starting point is 00:22:57 Well, he had a back injury. His back exploded. With Ryan Reeves, I think the three of us are guilty of this and a lot of fans. We thought he would be more effective on the ice. I thought he was going to be more than a guy who you shouldn't put out there in the third period. I thought he'd be an effective fourth line player. He's going to affect the games in some way. He's not going to be a skill guy.
Starting point is 00:23:16 He's not going to put up goals. But I thought he could run out on the ice and do stuff. And I had no idea that he was this limited on his on-ice play. And that's disappointing to see. Dude, if he was getting outscored, if his line was getting outscored, something like 5-9 on the season. It'd be fine. We wouldn't be having this discussion.
Starting point is 00:23:34 They're getting outscored, if I'm not mistaken, off the top of my head, 2-13. That's crazy. That's untenable. You can't do that, man. that's like uh look around the league at the goal differential like how many of these one goal wins that the leafs have that we keep shitting on them for are in part because this dude lives and breathes in a leafters they could have been two goal wins if he's not out there i was open to the idea um but we're two months in and it's like categorically not working wrong like it's yeah
Starting point is 00:24:10 it's not working we're done here we've been done here that's enough sheldon that's enough brad figure it out like this isn't it the only thing i'll give them leeway for which i i said this at the beginning of the year is that eventually he's gonna work his way out of the lineup and when the games really matter in the playoffs he won't be around he won't see the no he won't situations so if they can win games like this how they've been winning all season long i think they're seven one and one in their last um dude they're one of the hottest teams in the league yeah so if they're able to win games like this and play him 30 35 games this season and it's okay when push comes to shove he won't see the ice so i can kind of live with it if the vibes are better in
Starting point is 00:24:55 the locker room because he's there yeah like i guess we shouldn't you know lose sight of that oh my god the new nhl yeah what are you what are you trying to do it's so bad i'm sorry i asked i'm sorry i fucking asked every time i open the goddamn thing you want me to just look it up please do no i was literally just trying to look up the last 10 games can't even fucking click it and they rearranged where the highlights are sorry i'm so mad at this you want the i'm surprised anybody used that ever like that's why when the outrage came i was like people still use nhl.com for what like the youtube page is so national hockey league fans so we try to go to the national last last 10 according to the standings
Starting point is 00:25:35 they're seven one and two like but can you arrange the last 10 for all the teams in the league can you oh no that's not a sort no why would you ever want to be able to fucking do that you're right i don't know stupid okay piece of shit you're a professional sports um i can i told people if you want to make a lot of money you should write like you should do better than nhl.com nhl.com but good.com yeah and and you could literally all you have to do is basic stats you don't need uh you don't need advanced stuff you need literally the same stuff that counting numbers counting numbers they have they have lots of sites like that you guys hockey reference exists yeah but this is hockey nhl's fucking website yeah it's broken see i'm saying noah gregor was
Starting point is 00:26:19 signed like three months ago he's still the most recent story on the leafs website that's because they don't have uh i don't think they've got in-house reporters anymore dude have some pride Have some pride in what you do I think they found out that nobody uses that site And nobody uses their team site What were you trying to say about the Leafs? I was trying to find out how many teams have 7 wins or more in their last 10
Starting point is 00:26:38 The Kings do The Jets do The Leafs do The Predators do The Oilers do And that's it Fucking hate this stupid garbage nonsense No of course I wasn't
Starting point is 00:26:55 it's fucking stupid get real be elite holy shit um oh yeah so horrible so yeah listen the the ryan reeves thing like listen all the advanced stats guys were like we told you you're right you did tell us but i was you didn't tell us it was this bad but i was the one also saying let's just have an open mind for a second and i i think the first couple of games that he played he was great yeah and then he disappeared well and so so this is where you question you know is did one of those fights lead to like a hurt hand or something so if and if it did why is he playing i know i've been questioning it since like the fourth or fifth game of the season because it
Starting point is 00:27:35 doesn't matter if ryan reeves is injured versus not injured slightly in his hand i don't think it matters his effectiveness he's clearly like extremely not effective yes but they're seven one and two i know it's so weird yeah it's it might it might not matter are his vibes so immaculate like i don't and did you notice who was one of the guys who helped carry joseph olaf mr henry's yeah he was right there oh you know that's crazy maybe he's and he's making sheldon keith laugh it put me out there coach put me in the box his can you imagine how many players you would never ever see again if they were a negative 11 but before well before christmas he must tell the best goddamn jokes i'm okay with that yeah he doesn't have to play another game and
Starting point is 00:28:25 if he's just he's just a guy around the locker room that makes the guys who who do make a difference in the game feel good and he gets paid a million three for that okay i'm cool with it i don't care cool job to have yeah that's a great job vibes commissioner all right i'm good with that that's why i was saying no but you could also be a nerd and have a vibes department and that's where the stand-up comedians and the dj okay well you need that's when you hire zed and you bring him in they need somebody who's played a game the dj dead to dj yeah oh yeah you don't know zed i think i've heard of him what i know professional believe me you know his song clarity you never heard clarity which one's you've heard are you you've heard clarity oh yeah yeah of
Starting point is 00:29:04 course he's got a song with selena gomez he's like yeah but i don't know all the names oh wow goodness calvin harris yeah i know calvin and hobbs shut up i know calvin harris because calvin harris is scottish and that's it's if you if you're married to a scottish person you don't know all the scottish national heroes he's on the money you're out of the family oh he's on the money yeah that's a um i think i think then you know with the leafs like martin jones being in and will not being a part of things for the next little bit. Ilya Samsonov has been dealing with a mystery injury or illness, and we don't know what it is.
Starting point is 00:29:43 The Leafs obviously are not going to tell you. So it's going to be Martin Jones and Dennis Hildeby. The Hildebeest? Are we going to see him in the NHL? My assumption is Samsonov will back up Martin Jones on Saturday. Now, I want you to take a quick look at Dennis Hildeby. uh the swedish legend all right because he has with the marlies this year he's played nine games okay uh four three and two but check out these stats four three and two is not great
Starting point is 00:30:13 yeah but but the marlies aren't great no his stats are insane goals against average of a 1.89 that's so stupid save percentage of 925 that's in the a that's not and they can't win I know. They're getting 925 goaltending, and they're 4-3 and what? Yeah, 4-3. With him playing, 4-3 and 2. You should have more wins than that with that kind of game. You should have more wins than that.
Starting point is 00:30:38 I'm looking at Martin Jones here. With the A, he's played five. His AHL numbers are not great. 337 goals against average and an 870 save percentage, which is roughly worse than what he did with Seattle last year. Yes, it is. What's his record? His record is 2-1-1.
Starting point is 00:30:56 And who's the third goalie for the Marlies? They did have Vyacheslav Peksa. David Ayers. Stop it. Trying to think. Peksa's been with the Growlers. They had a third guy. Petruzzelli.
Starting point is 00:31:08 Oh, Keith Petruzzelli. And Keith Petruzzelli. I'm going to look it up because the... Listen, I won't lie to you. The AHL sites are not a lot better than the NHL ones. Keith Petruzzelli is 3-3-1 with a .874 save percentage and a 3-3-3 goals against average. Now, I can understand them not wanting to take Hildeby off of his hot streak.
Starting point is 00:31:31 Like, it was the same thing they did with Wohl last year. But that's a guy to keep an eye on. Why wouldn't you give Hildeby a shot at some point? Maybe. He's 22. I think he's an adult. You call him up exclusively to play him. Yes.
Starting point is 00:31:47 You don't call him up to back up. Right. I think Martin Jones is an adult. This is why you got him. You got him for this reason. yeah i think martin jones and samson samson off it seems like he's just sick yeah you know yeah based on the reporting so yeah i think i think it'll be ilia and jones which is reasonable it's totally reasonable uh if you're going down to your third option and also this happens at least
Starting point is 00:32:12 once a year with the leafs where one or two guys go down with an illness and they have a performance that's not that great and we're like where did that come from well it came from not just two guys are sick and this is why sheldon keith when asked about it it was a year or two ago i can't remember um someone was like oh yeah the illness is going through the team he's like we play in ontario everyone's got something he's like he was he was not ready to hear oh they have the sniffles like he wasn't ready to hear that there's been some nasty shit going through uh yeah gta actually i had a i had i had a call with my doctor yesterday uh i think i told you guys a couple weeks ago that have been having asthma attacks every night so the uh the virus the british are
Starting point is 00:32:56 calling it the hundred day cough uh but what it does is it it it you know like asthma it triggers asthma a little bit more so you get fluid on the lungs when you lie down and that's and so i wake up every night around 2 3 a.m and i have to take my puffers and stuff and what my doctor said was that like my i have to take my orange puffer because my my my lungs are all over the place whatever and that kind of stuff imagine like i'm just guy right i'm just normal guy uh what does that do to a professional athlete when it's like a tenth of a percent right in your lung space or you know there's some nasty nasty bugs going around man honest they can probably handle it a little better than you i don't think so i don't think so i think when you that's a specimen this
Starting point is 00:33:40 is a peak male form right here dare you let me just uh um on the mark on the martin jones thing we're gonna we're gonna blow past that one uh um cj brought up his his old tweet from um uh earlier this season when the season began and the leafs didn't lose martin jones on waivers teams are cheap cj wrote of note with veteran leaf school tender martin jones currently on waivers any team putting in a successful claim will owe him a hundred grand bonus payment tomorrow The timing of that bonus payment was structured into the $875,000 one-year contract he signed in August. So a little bit of very creative cap gymnastics by the Toronto Maple Leafs might have saved them from a terrible situation that they could have been in right now where they don't have Jones because they lost him because somebody else was willing to take him on waivers. But now they got him because Brandon Pridham is a very smart man, and they can run with Jones and Samsonoff.
Starting point is 00:34:44 there's a few teams around the nhl who probably wish they spent the hundred grand yeah i think so but they're cheap yeah yep i i uh i gotta give them credit that's like really uh that's such a pretty cool yeah yeah well i mean it's also like uh i bet i bet the nhl gets rid of it like the ability to do that it's like oh the leafs did that can't no here tell you what get rid of the website and then you can get rid of this stink no but uh i don't even remember what i was gonna say it doesn't really matter doesn't really matter we'll get to it we'll go back to it um the other thing it was nice to see willie break his his five game uh goal to streak or pointless it was a goal to streak he had some i think it was goals and and uh kind of get back
Starting point is 00:35:30 on the way 13th goal of the year starting to inch closer to matthews there were people yesterday from edmonton chirping the leafs going uh hey zach hyman's got more points than austin matthews yeah kneelander has more than dry so well david doesn't count he doesn't no that's an alien yeah no you can't you can't um so dude yeah go ahead they've been the oilers have been so good the blue jackets have been so bad and the oilers just caught them that's how deep the hole was for them yeah they they have to play sort of like losing streak free hockey the rest of the year uh yeah basically so this is what i don't like about the parody thing with the nhl because the best stories are the collapses and the comebacks the best stories in sports and what the loser
Starting point is 00:36:18 point does like you're you know is it prevents teams from making an like there will be incredible comebacks you saw it with the st louis blues in 2019 when they won there was 2018 when they won the cup whatever it was 2019 19 you know from january 1st they were like last place they make get the playoffs they win like amazing story but i think if i'm running the league and i'll never run the league because i don't think that they like me very much the the best stories are the ones where like holy shit it's come this team has fallen off this team is coming up and we're down to the last three games of the season and one of them is going to make the playoffs who's it going to be the the andrew hammond had me damn near cheering for the sins a few years crazy but but
Starting point is 00:37:01 if you take like i don't think you should get a point for losing i just i do not think that that should be a thing and and i that's why i like um what the nba does or the mlb does which is games back like hey this this team is x amount of games back because it's about did you win or did you not right and that's it and i want the oilers and the nhl should want the oilers in the playoffs you need the oilers in the playoffs you need mcdavid in the playoffs you need to allow for crazy comebacks okay i'm gonna ask a uh ignorant question those are usually the best questions because it means uh i don't know the answer to the question i'm asking is mcdavid a draw in the states like i think with hardcore fans i don't think i think you guys were right a couple weeks
Starting point is 00:37:48 ago when we were talking about it like the stars are probably going to be the hughes brothers and and you know ovi and sid were stars uh like they were marketable stars and still are but you know the younger generations coming in i think it's largely the market and canada oh yeah like no the leafs jack up the rogers yeah rogers needs the oilers in the playoffs i don't think espn gives a fuck i don't think they care if mcdavid's there it's edmonton but you've got a that's your best player you got to market that guy whether he's marketable or not i don't think you do and i don't think they feel that need oh that's part of the reason like uh you know mckinnon and mccarr get the love they do the kings are getting the love that they do i mean also they deserve it
Starting point is 00:38:35 jack hughes yeah gets the love that he does tage thompson when the sabers actually win games yep gets the love that he does uh unfortunately for my fantasy team um like i don't like i'd like to know what the ratings were for colorado edmonton a few years ago right like i'm sure that series did well up here i'm sure the battle of alberta did well up here i don't know if he's a draw in the states that's all i'm saying okay or all i'm asking i should say i don't even know the answer if the answer is definitively yes he is a draw then never mind right right okay okay well i mean And I'm sad and disappointed if they don't make it. So I hope they do.

Starting point is 00:40:50 I want to talk about a couple of things that came up in 32 Thoughts. One thing that the Leafs could do, and any team could do this, is sign Ethan Baer. Yes. And it's also, CJ was saying this morning, another player that the Leafs could have interested in interested in who had i believe a very similar surgery to patrick kane is yes he who is starting to angle for a return now these guys are not going to change the complexion of your team it's not if you win the cup it's not going to be like wow yes he pulled the rv that's when the season changed for them some oilers fans are big fans because he's got great advanced
Starting point is 00:41:26 numbers uh a lot of oilers uh media and and frankly the front office really frustrated with his lack of like offensive production could any of those could either of those players make a difference for the leafs in a depth perspective i feel like ethan bear has got to be better than some of the guys they're icing right now jesse pull your rv is a complete mystery box um he'd be an interesting story if they got him um but in terms of changing the complexion of the team i have no idea because i have no idea what they're getting um and neither do you um you know a player i i mean it's not 2016 anymore yeah like he was a top five pick we were all very excited now it's 2023 he hasn't played in a while and he's got his hips done that's tough even bear
Starting point is 00:42:15 on the other hand um is very intriguing for the leafs in particular because what have i talked about with the leafs defensive depth in years past the buoy you can't go past the buoy there's a player in your depth where once you get there they're the buoy and you know you've gone too far oh i see last year the undertow yeah last year they had victor mette and mac hollowell as a pair and i was like wow we've got there we're at the buoy this is too far and they kept winning and i was like well well well well this year we got max legeois jesse do you have the shift chart up no okay all right i want to see how many minutes he played last night not a lot and they weren't great minutes every time he was on the ice i'm like
Starting point is 00:43:10 get him max and then like i mean the first uh wool save on tarasenko was right in front of He played double the minutes that he played his last game, November 4th, which was 454. He played 1028 last night. Wow. That's actually a lot more than I thought. He might be the buoy. So if you can get Ethan Bear and move one of the guys playing on their
Starting point is 00:43:35 offside to the left, I think that'd be a okay. I think that'd be great. You are taking a risk, though, right? This guy's coming off injury. Yeah. There was another number highlighted last night is Benoit was up in the top four with Jake McCabe. Benoit's had great numbers, and that pair got caved. Now, some people are looking at that and going, well, it's Benoit.
Starting point is 00:43:59 He's playing out of his depth. But also, Jake McCabe's playing his offside. None of that is a recipe for success. Right. Putting them on the road up against Brady Kachuk, Tim Stutzla, and was it Josh Norris? that's a pretty tough that's an unreal line man yeah simone benoit should be a five six max yeah um so i think we're at the buoy so uh ethan bear is a living breathing human being who shoots right that i could see having an impact on the lineup jesse pull your rv to me is much
Starting point is 00:44:30 more of a mystery um i also want to mention uh freach talked about the leafs potentially looking into matt benning but he's injured and who does he even play for these i think it's uh I think so. Yeah, but he's injured, and he had a two-year... The only reason he didn't sign here in 2022, because he had an offer, was because he got a two-year deal. And I think it was Preds or Sharks. Where is he playing?
Starting point is 00:44:53 He's currently playing for the Sharks. Ah, there we go. The surging San Jose Sharks. Yes, and we'll talk about that. We're coming for that. Oh, yeah? We're coming for that. All right.
Starting point is 00:45:02 So I... I don't know. I don't think Matt Benning makes a huge difference for them, but he's a body. I don't have... I mean, I'd rather give an opportunity to, like, I want the Leafs to go out and get a difference maker. Like, Ethan Bear is, yeah, that's kind of neat and intriguing, and it could work. But, like, I want them to get a guy who is definitively, like, at least, at minimum, going to be in your lineup every night.
Starting point is 00:45:34 You know what I mean? Get me interested. If you're not going to get that guy, I don't know. like well coconut in there uh like i don't know uh mario ferrero's names come up with leaf fans it's not not in any i want to say there's no there's been nothing from the rumor mill about that but that'd probably be in the lineup every night well he's a top four guy yeah that's interesting um interesting too darren ferris won yeah wait did he steve uh because so i saw that philip broberg was sent to bakersfield yes and i was like oh darren ferris lost but in fact i was
Starting point is 00:46:07 wrong because it's been reported this morning that because of the Darren Ferris hoopla, teams have started calling about Broberg. So maybe it worked. Darren! Darren! Darren! Darren! Oh! Oh!
Starting point is 00:46:24 What? What? No. It's time that Agent Scott, they're due. Let's give the center of attention all the attention he deserves. Darren! Oh! Jesse he needs a podcast
Starting point is 00:46:40 can we hook him up Jesse how would you feel about this name Darren Ferris Tyson Barry who was given permission to talk to other teams but Barry Trotz is now pissed off that that got out yeah like it helps
Starting point is 00:46:56 when it's out there like I don't know why these GM sometimes get so upset because the more people know the more phone calls they'll make so like this Darren Ferris thing like he's he's kind of right in that you make a hoopla and now people are calling and same with tyson barry if people know then they will call and um i don't know tyson barry has a fit a lot of places around the leaf because tyson barry's still good like there's nothing wrong with tyson wood okay if the leafs didn't have to pay nasm cadre for him do you mind tyson barry on this year's leafs
Starting point is 00:47:25 No, dude, we need to adjust our expectations with Barry. I think people are too hard on him. And listen, I did not enjoy his tenure as a Leaf. I didn't. But I've watched him play since. And if you surround him with not Cody Cece, which two teams have tried. And a head coach that didn't hate his guts.
Starting point is 00:47:54 oh my god like babcock like you look at you should look at his splits between when he played for babcock and then when keith took over he had like 17 points in his first 23 games under if you don't deploy him like a stubborn moron um he's actually a pretty good serviceable nhl player dude after the oilers traded him um to nashville like he almost willed that team like to the friggin playoffs without at home and everything they replaced Matthias at home with Tyson Barry and
Starting point is 00:48:27 everyone said well that's not a recipe for success they had a nearly entire forward lineup of AHL players and they were playing great I also I want to add on the Barry trots thing being pissed
Starting point is 00:48:40 off about you know the fact that it got out if an agent calls another team and says hey Tyson Barry's on the block just want to let you know can you keep it quiet why would that team why would they bother right like oh yeah i want to help the nashville predators
Starting point is 00:48:54 fuck off like what because and that's the way it works right like that this is a competitive thing i don't know why does that does that make barry trotz less likely to trade him no here this is barry trotz's phone oh hello darren yeah i don't think we're in a situation where on knowing that tyson berry is on the block will affect the tyson berry price i feel like no the the price isn't going anywhere it is what it is yeah oh man that fourth is now a conditional fourth yeah and like he's on an expiring deal it's 4.5 million dollars he's a servable serviceable defenseman there's going to be a lot of teams interested in him as we get closer to the uh march 8th march 8th and well here i'll tell you why i think barry trotz might be a little miffed that this got out you
Starting point is 00:49:44 can't tell on nhl.com because it's a terrible website from a terrible league but the national predators are actually even though they're not in a playoff spot right now one of the hottest teams in the nhl yeah they're eight and two well and they have a they have a backlog of young defensemen that they want to play ahead of tyson barry unfortunately yeah so looking at what the preds want to be a team building for the future whether they make the playoffs or not and the fact that barry has an expiring contract he's been on the block since the opening puck drop of the season what are you talking about we we it's when you look at the teams that'll be in that area who are going to sell at the deadline you look at their ufas and you're saying oh yeah he's probably
Starting point is 00:50:21 going to be available so it's not really news it's a logical assumption yeah also steve uh before we get too far from proberg uh you spent uh all last episode calling him a right-handed defenseman he is not oh my bad yeah well at least i got the position right which isn't a given which yeah that hasn't happened in the past but no he's left lefty yeah and i even look i i feel like during the stream yesterday i i was like well you know he's 22 he shoots left oh well but yeah so that whole segment he got it we gotta trash it oh man gotta throw it away man i gotta throw it in the garbage um by the way i thought i thought as just like a rule and maybe i'm wrong about this generally people favored the right hand over the left what do you mean and just like in human
Starting point is 00:51:08 society i always thought there were more right-handed oh shooting like for hockey no just no i didn't say hockey i'm saying just in society yeah i thought that human beings were more often right-handed than left for writing well why is it so hard to find a right-handed shot defenseman that like why has that become like a thing because apparently if you shoot right and catch left that's weird i i shoot right and catch left yes that is so the way the way i was taught when you're younger is you want your dominant hand to be on top like is that oh that's the way you thought it was this this hand lower if you're more people are right-handed so you want your dominant hand on top so you i you learn to shoot left more should i have learned to shoot left i
Starting point is 00:51:53 don't know i don't know so for dragon boat which is like a it's uh i don't even know how to describe it for the audio but you have my right hand goes over top to my left side and my left hand is down at my hip as i'm pulling the water but if i go to the other side which would be closer to how i shoot a hockey stick it's like i've never done it in my entire life yeah because you're more comfortable with your dominant hand on top yeah like i i couldn't golf on my left i couldn't swing a baseball bat on my left all of it is on my right yeah golf is the opposite like the golf you you swing the same way you kind of right unless you're weird and like a lot of people learn golf left-handed as well but like most of the time you just learn on the same side you
Starting point is 00:52:39 right but with hockey it's the other way because i think you want your dominant hand on top i am absolutely everything that's all i learned except for catching yeah no really catching because you got to be able to throw yes with your with your hand hand that's my throwing hand yes that's that's how it works yes okay wow i guess i just find it like i've been finding it weird for years and i just thought like i thought there were like i could swear in my class like growing up there's most people were right-handed it was weird to see left-handed people because they'd have like the ink all over their hands because they'd be like writing oh you know what i mean the majority of the superstars we watched growing up were left-handed shooters like it's like mario lemieux
Starting point is 00:53:15 is like it's funny there's an argument he's the best player of all time um i mean most people would agree it's gretzky but there's an argument for right-handed players like there's no argument that's so weird yeah no he's i would love to know it's a weird conversation because i feel like you have this conversation with like five-year-olds because that's when you like learn to pick up a stick yeah so that's yeah so i feel i don't know how we're analyzing this right now and trying to have the but i think it's interesting because like why is this such like oh my if we don't get a right-handed defenseman we're gonna die like and that's been the leafs narrative for eight years there was a there was a play last night where i don't remember who the defenseman was but they
Starting point is 00:53:57 were trying to hold the line um the offensive line and they couldn't do it because whoever it was holding the line had to go on their backhand really and like there's i'm sure you could get by but there are plays where it's helpful so it's interesting at the end according to pure hockey dot com at the nhl level there is a nearly two to one ratio of lefties to righties just generally even though 90 of the population is right-handed yeah yeah because i right-handed people naturally shoot left with a hockey stick wow that's so wild i need to re-listen to this picture or something yeah i just this is just crazy this is blowing my mind and also they say it's interesting that you mentioned that a lot of the reasons are some of these,
Starting point is 00:54:46 some of the players that are role models are left-handed like Doug Gilmore is my favorite hockey player of all time. It always bugged me that he was left-handed and I was right-handed and I couldn't be exactly like him. So I guess teams, cause it matters when you're a kid and you don't know any better. I would have to look it up, but I'm almost positive.
Starting point is 00:55:03 Anecdotally there are more right-handed shooters in the top 50 and scoring than they're like maybe ever have been in the NHL. we didn't really grow up with that no we didn't yeah it's weird like more toronto guys you think would because of sundin yeah i don't know it's something you pick up as a kid you know it's just there you can the idea that you have your dominant hand on on the bottom part is also a way to learn how to shoot a hockey stick like both are not too incorrect more people are in the belief of your dominant hand goes on top but like if your dominant hand is on the bottom you kind of get more power from the middle of the stick when you're when you're uh shooting so like there's
Starting point is 00:55:47 you can learn both ways and just something you do as a kid they put the stick in your hand what feels more comfortable that's how you learn for the rest of your life all i know is leo shoots right-handed let's go daddy's getting a cottage there's a righty yeah make him a d let's go love that that's really interesting let's go and he's not gonna be a hockey player either uh baseball baseball okay he loves baseball you better teach him how to hit left then i wanted oh shit really yeah he's got a you gotta be a lefty uh thrower oh i fucked it up yeah no yeah there's a right-handed hitter there's fucking million of those damn it yeah well now he'll just have to simply be the best one my favorite story about all of this is uh rafael nadal rafael
Starting point is 00:56:26 nadal is a right-handed person he is he does everything right-handed but his his uh father i believe who who taught him how to play tennis told him learn left-handed it's gonna be it's gonna be wonky it's gonna be a little different it's gonna throw everybody off and you should learn it because you have a slight advantage over everybody you play so it's the only thing he does in his entire life left-handed is play tennis and he's one of the greatest of all time at it wild didn't ben simmons also do that and it didn't work at all no no ben this ben simmons theory is that he shoots with the wrong hand because he's so bad oh jeez yeah that's pretty tough yeah i think it's kevin o'connor from the ringer did a lot of analysis on ben simmons just shooting
Starting point is 00:57:04 because he just what happened bad at it and they're like we think he might be shooting with the wrong hand so oh my god wow um hey uh uh the other thing i thought this was interesting because we talked a little bit about the gary betman press conference and uh all cj's tweets about it and the fact that you know oh it's a matter of some concern that milan hasn't figured out their hockey arena yet and i remember i told you guys this happened before it happened in sochi it happened a few other places um and uh i guess behind the scenes what we didn't know is that betman to the board of governors reiterated that the players position on the olympics they gotta go and he acknowledged to the board of governors that the fans feel just as strongly
Starting point is 00:57:47 as the players do whoa what where is this from this is from 32 thoughts as and deputy commissioner bill daly said i can't say i'm pessimistic at all whoa that's the most optimistic thing he's ever so it's a double negative not not pessimistic he is optimistic why would he say it like i can't say i'm pessimistic because they want to fuck with you man why don't you just say i'm happy about it he is bill daly is the simpsons caricature of al gore like dude when he speaks my lust for life goes down like holy cow thanks though bill um so that's good uh and then uh the the players feel strongly the fans feel strongly so it that might be the board of governors acquiescing and going fine we hate growing the game and making more money it really sucks um and apparently
Starting point is 00:58:41 behind the scenes too and we talked about this in the last episode they haven't come up with like a plan but this regional cable rights thing uh which guys when we started this show the last thing i would have ever wanted to talk to you about is regional cable i don't give a shit but it is important to the cap which i do give a shit about and they're i guess feeling very bullish about the franchise value so that's good it's one of the number one complaints of our fan base a hundred percent and the border yeah because they don't want to think about it they just want to let me can i watch the game can i pay you to watch the great so so what apparently they're they're talking about the board of governors and i said why aren't they more proactive about this apparently
Starting point is 00:59:18 they are working on or talking about working on plans for what's next because at the end of the day um we don't think regional sports is gonna like it already actually doesn't exist it exists in the minds of older business people that have signed these contracts but oh just regionality in general like doesn't really exist in the same way that it ever did and and won't anymore the internet changed all that so how can they make the best business model in this particular uh climate and i'm curious about that and the last thing i thought you guys would find funny james dolan owner of the madison square garden entertainment everything owns the next owns the rangers he also owns the sphere in vegas and a band and and a band yep and he obviously the nhl
Starting point is 01:00:08 is going to have it at the sphere they obviously feel really good about their revenue so that they can have it at the sphere because it's not going to be cheap because james dolan refused to give them a discount good for him james dolan for him member of the nhl uh like ownership group and it was like nah you don't get a friends and family because don't they like fairly openly hate him and he hates them right back yes and didn't he resign from the nba one too the nba or maybe it's the nba well the nba does not like him no why would uh no yeah you're a multi-billion dollar league give me my money fridge also said that maybe some teams remain in vegas um uh for free agency as well rather than going home to keep everybody together because the last possible
Starting point is 01:00:51 date of the stanley cup final do you guys know what it is yeah they made it way too tight what june 25 and then the draft is the 28 29 or 29 30 i forget yeah and then you got free agency basically July 1st yeah 18 hours later it's like a six day process from Stanley Cup could be awarded if it's game seven to draft two days to to free agency and that's like spread it out guys what are you doing here great from a content perspective it's not though nothing else but it's not no speculation is great from a content perspective we know that oh you're right having that all together that's too much there's people drinking out of a fire the the average person doesn't have enough time to consume the content that we need to put out if we need to cover everything within
Starting point is 01:01:35 those couple days the um if you have a what ruins everything like what ruins the entire schedule is if you have a bad final four if you have a final four no one's interested in that that drags dude the final four takes a month it's two weeks a series or two weeks around if you have a bad final four you were stuck with at least two of those teams for a month that's last year we got two pretty big blowouts was carolina florida was 4-1 or was it a sweep no it was a sweep sweep and then vegas um vegas florida was no no i'm talking about the semi-finals uh who did vegas play in this i think vegas was five as well dallas wasn't it no no colorado went out early Here, Jesse, take 15 minutes on NHL.com and then go somewhere good instead.
Starting point is 01:02:33 Let me just give you two seconds. You have to filibuster while I bring up the playoff. I'm trying to think of who it was. Otani to Toronto. Trying to think of who it was. Otani to Toronto. You guys want to guess? What is it?
Starting point is 01:02:44 We got it? What do we got? Guess. Dallas. Steve? Dallas. Dallas. Correct.
Starting point is 01:02:50 And I remember that because Max Domi had a good series. 4-2 Vegas took that series. Yeah, both. Remember? you're you talking about the uh semi-finals sucking and the the final four sucking and then the final sucking that's what happened last year yeah the finals was 4-1 carolina forever vegas or carolina florida was 4-0 dallas vegas was 4-2 and yeah even in the west in the second round or in the east sorry toronto florida was 4-1 carolina new jersey was 4-1 if you get two
Starting point is 01:03:20 blowouts in the conference final there's a chance they start the final early but if it's a sweep and six and there's also by the way let's let's keep in mind too that there's usually like a five to seven day break between some of these rounds sometimes yep if they go too quickly and the other ones like still going and they still need the break yeah you know that drags back last year's first round we have started the nhl on time first round for the first time i think since pre covid we finally got the schedule sorted why are the playoffs this long i love the playoffs i love that they're uh they're confetti they're crazy but we don't it doesn't need to go to the end of june i want the playoffs to end june 15th max and then you get a week of speculation leading up to
Starting point is 01:04:07 the draft will there be any trades of course not because it's the draft well because but we could still talk about them yeah the season started late for some reason that that's i think the key to all this the nhl season somebody i forget who tweeted it pre-season um i think it was a tsn personality i forget but the nhl season should start on canadian thanksgiving yes it's a why did it's a genius thing to do you know you push it it's a you bring training camp up you bring all the precinct games up thanksgiving in canada is a thing now we have day games nhl season kicks off and then you can end an nhl season when it's not 30 degrees outside if you move the final date for the end of the Stanley Cup final
Starting point is 01:04:47 back a week to June 18th. This isn't even a segment. We're like, oh, that's a little late. I don't know. It's only three days after June. I remember talking about it with you guys, though, because we always put our season previews out over Thanksgiving and that doesn't make any sense. No.
Starting point is 01:05:03 They should be playing games. Yes. Yeah. I think that the Thanksgiving Monday, you know, that should be kickoff NHL season day. That'd be awesome. I don't even understand, like again, Leafs and Detroit and some other teams playing eight preseason games maximum four i'm gonna say because they're not going to agree to four seven even if you reduce it by one oh wow reduce it by one that cost them like half
Starting point is 01:05:29 a million dollars though because like the thing is like leaf preseason games are still two well then have 20 then have 20 if you make that much money off of eight have what are you sticking at eight for have 20 play through the summer fuck it who cares hey we're in it to make money play through the summer just was that 82 games you know what baseball's got it figured out 162 all right since we are in a body checking since you know it's popular fortnight playing at center ice instead what are we wasting time with hockey for be a league fuck i don't understand why that made you so upset i don't know either yeah but it is upsetting for you because the coffee was good since we're doing the idea consortium uh today good word uh i i'm gonna throw this one at you
Starting point is 01:06:19 the nf the nfl does free agency in the draft backwards in comparison to the other three major pro sports the free agency period comes before the draft how would you feel about that change that is fascinating what what do you what effect do you think that would have i feel like the cap's too tight because i like ideally what happens is you have a mad rush to sign people and then everyone who missed out makes a whole big bunch of trades but it's the nhl and we know that would never happen because the margins are so slim with the triple hard cap like okay this is how little of a football fan i am do they have a cap yes is it it's like 150 million isn't it it's like a crazy high cap there's 50 players to a roster right yeah like i don't know but they
Starting point is 01:07:15 also can cut players with no notice they cut players no guarantee yeah yeah teams don't like it never actually seems to be a problem i've never like i i don't see stories and again i'm just not a huge football fan where it's like ah this team just they can't spend anymore it is a thing is there there's a yeah there's more cap gymnastics can take place in the nfl than they can the nhl but teams are they have cap problems sometimes because they just simply choose to not honor contracts yes but there are more ways around it so genius it's uh you can get out of things but i don't know i think i think it's an interesting way of doing things because you go into the draft kind of knowing your roster
Starting point is 01:07:57 as opposed to you're at the draft and you're making deals and then you got to draft guys, you got to figure it out and then you go into free agency and you fill out the rest of your roster. Now you're going to the draft floor and you're like,
Starting point is 01:08:08 okay, we got everything sorted out and now we can select who we want. Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer. That's why every step and dollar raised matters. On September 19th,

Starting point is 01:08:43 The flight from Anaheim to Toronto is in the air. It's in the air? It's currently in the air. Butterfly in the sky. Yeah, yeah. uh don't know but i think they signed this guy i hope so i really hope so um i just wanted to throw that out now steve yes um you have been hot on the san jose sharks yeah i'm a truther i'm a shark's true why why are you why are you into what the sharks are being able to what they're
Starting point is 01:09:13 able to do right now because they are fun gosh darn it they are everyone likes an underdog and right now i think it's okay to not necessarily have a second team but if you're gonna have a team that you have a soft spot for as long as they're in the other conference as long as they're far away and you can't get much farther away from toronto than san jose california now by points percentage they're still in last by by actual points though they are not in last anymore yeah by points percentage they're dead last chicago is now in actual dead last from points but remember the sharks started this season oh 10 and one legendarily bad a couple of 10 goal against games too and then what happened the next game after they lost back-to-back games where they
Starting point is 01:10:02 allowed 10 goals what happens they won their first game of the season over the philadelphia flyers and ever since folks you're not going to believe this because if you haven't been paying attention I mean, why would you pay attention necessarily to what the San Jose Sharks are doing? They are not just competitive, not just in games. They are above gosh darn 500. They had a three-goal comeback the other night, and they had, what was it, three or four-goal comeback last night against the Red Wings in Patrick Kane's Red Wings debut. They ruined the whole thing. The whole thing.
Starting point is 01:10:43 Gosh darn it, I'm a sharkstruther. By the way, they are 5-4-1 in their last 10. 5-4-1 in their last 10. They're a team in this league. Two-game win streak. Two-game win streak. That's got to match a season high. Who were you tweeted by?
Starting point is 01:10:57 I was tweeted by a gentleman. Do you remember his name? I remembered his last name because I called him Mr. Betcher because I wouldn't call him by his first name because it feels ridiculous. uh jonathan uh betcher followed me on twitter and i'm like yeah interesting who's that his twitter profile describes him as fan plus president of the san jose sharks and san jose barracuda and he's on a bunch of different boards and he's got the uh his photo is the uh i have a suit jacket
Starting point is 01:11:34 and a dress shirt but unbutton the top button and no tie because he's a he's a fun leader yeah i'm just like you yeah we're a family yeah every day is like a like the end of a wedding yeah well it's starting it's time to dance yeah it's time to dance let's go come on uh by the way the the sharks and the barracuda have uh some of the best social media in the nhl uh yes and i i remember when i tweeted about the barracuda i still follow them the barracuda i think their name is amazing uh they were super cool about the tweet so what what are you guys are you are you like friends now so i tweeted i've decided i'm absolutely a shark's truther okay i tweeted that uh the last time they had their three goal comeback and then they did it again against detroit and he said hey
Starting point is 01:12:19 steve dangle he goes hey steve dangle let us know where to send your new hashtag sj sharks gear uh and i am shameless completely shameless so i said i'll dm you good sir and then someone named andy courtright shout out andy said how about sharks tickets for a leaf game on january 6 too would love to see an lfr episode from the tank no to which jonathan betcher replied yep happy to host Steve Dangle at the Leafs game on January 6th. No. Maybe the first ever pod live from the SAP Center. And probably the most famous thing to ever happen on January 6th.
Starting point is 01:13:07 Definitely. Yeah. 100%. It's a rather, it's known as a mundane date. We should go. You got to go. I mean, I'd love to go with you, but you got to go. So, would I be ridiculous if I asked if his offer included flight?
Starting point is 01:13:28 Yes. A little bit. I just went to Sweden. We do run a small business. Yeah, I just went to Sweden. No, ask. Definitely ask him. So, I gave him the address of our office, and I'm pretty sure he's sending San Jose Sharks.
Starting point is 01:13:45 Is he going to send plane tickets? i will ask uh uh that's for three my friend john as for three as for three flights well he said live podcast and i don't do the podcast by myself yeah also they got a plane every team's got a team plane that's what the anaheim flight is they're coming to get us no it's a little soon for the january 6th hey listen they want us to be prepared i would love to we should call it scp storm san yeah on january 6th well in san jose is actually the capital of california oh so we know no i made that up no i made that up i don't actually i think it's sacramento joke and you two took it too far what is the joke what are the sap center this is gonna be his first impression of us he also i
Starting point is 01:14:34 believe worked that guy was like a high-end executive at sap before he was oh he's from the maybe he's probably worked on that deal yeah no that's the sdp storms the sap center on january 6th oh my let's go you're like they don't love the brand name let's go work on that get your pitchforks and i'm gonna paint my face silver and teal stop it with a shark head on my hat this is jonathan we're a very professional show we hardly ever fucking swear and like we're big fans of what you're doing listen if you can't joke about tragedy what can you joke about you know adam you know what i mean yep yep so uh no i think it's listen i think the sharks are a cool story because they they really i mean i think right now they're only like five points behind
Starting point is 01:15:21 the the oilers um oh my god that's crazy and and to be honest to salvage this season you you look at them after october and you go like you've no wins how could you possibly make this worth watching except the san jose sharks uh twitter account's always been good right so they they have a 531 points percentage uh since they uh went on that ridiculous losing streak to start the season yeah that is oh my god it's the worst site in the universe that is a better points percentage than the lightning dude they've been better than the lightning lightning have been bad since they're losing street whatever they're still better than the lightning it's better than the black hawks it's better than the ducks how does it compare to the how does it compare to the canes
Starting point is 01:16:09 because they've also been surprisingly inconsistent uh let me look let me it's not far off so the sharks have been a 5-3-1 since they're losing street the canes are 5-5-8 uh they're better than the lightning they're just behind the nashville predators they are just behind the st louis blues they're ahead of the pittsburgh penguins ahead of the flames ahead of the habs ahead of the sabers ahead of the no sorry they're actually no yeah they're ahead of the sabers ahead of the wild head of the kraken head of the oilers head of the blue jackets head of the sends ahead of the ducks i almost said ahead of the sharks and ahead of the blackhawks dude they're like they've been at like a middle of the pack team wow since that epic losing streak they might still be
Starting point is 01:16:56 able to parlay that losing streak into a lottery pick wow while not actually having to suffer through the pain of being a lottery team all year now should you rely on having a big comeback win every night no i don't know toronto but the least do it just fine the least do it just fine uh they were getting goaltending the entire time basically through that losing streak except for obviously the 210 goal games uh they weren't getting goals they're scoring at will now it's crazy they're a great story i'm telling you i'm telling you what's the san jose sharks they've been fun are you just saying this because you want to flight down to san jose jesse that's preposterous that is ridiculous and frankly i resent the accusation
Starting point is 01:17:43 no i'd be crazy is there a spot in that we've never done we've never done a uh a show in front incentive like in any arena ever it'd be kind of neat to do that with uh the mascot and everything we'd rappel down from the roof yeah i want a sharky yeah sure uh he'll get uh unconscious yeah knocked unconscious that is a funny clip uh but the it's only funny because he's okay yeah i've always wanted to do that i always thought that'd be really like i was thinking last night Repel from the ceiling? Repel from the ceiling would be cool. I don't know if I've got the guts to do that, though,
Starting point is 01:18:22 because I'm a little bit freaked out with heights. But, you know, when you look at, like, so last night, TSN did their broadcast in Ottawa in the stadium, and they do that a lot. I think they did it also at Gate 5 or whatever for the Jays. Not the Jays, excuse me. The Hall of Fame game. The Hall of Fame game.
Starting point is 01:18:40 They did it with the thing in the background. The Blue Jays broadcast is always in the stadium. yeah um i've always wondered why sportsnet never puts hockey night in canada in one of the stadiums um except for the playoffs i guess they do it i love when they're when there's a show in a crowd i think that's just awesome college game day if you watch uh college game day on espn like it's always with 20 000 people outside last night was must watch tv in the nba because they merged the tnt and espn panels for the nba in-season tournament in las vegas and they had it in the crowd and it was just fantastic can you imagine like can you watch that tsn coming
Starting point is 01:19:17 together no way it would never happen steve can you do your charles barkley impression did you see did you see some clips from it go viral uh no not yet well because i was really busy last night right right yeah you streamed the game yeah streaming the lfr i don't know if you do your charles barkley impression but come on man that's all i really know come on man he told steven a that this isn't first take so we don't need your yelling and if you start yelling you're going to get
Starting point is 01:19:42 your first ass whooping take. I love Charles Barkley. Charles Barkley went on national television and basically threatened to beat up Skip Bayless and nothing happened. Talk about living the dream.
Starting point is 01:19:53 Oh yeah. Who hasn't wanted to do that? Challenge or somewhat challenge Kevin Durant to a fight. To a fight, yes. You don't want that with me, Kevin Durant. Kevin Durant's like
Starting point is 01:20:04 a foot and a half tall. Stephen's tall. Stephen's pretty tall. oh yeah he played college ball i guess here too but he's he's pretty tall he couldn't be i i just think kevin durant's in like way better shape yeah uh and he's not 20 years younger he couldn't take the slim reaper i just uh pierre lebrun uh uh has uh an article out that just came out we're talking about defenseman for the leafs one of the guys they're interested in sean walker and i just wanted to make note of this apparently the asking price on sean walker is going to be a first round
Starting point is 01:20:29 pick yeah and the flyers were offered a first round pick for lotten this summer and did not take it there's no reason for the flyers to train anybody right now while they're playing well yeah this isn't this is like a february discussion they're in a great position sorry drager said it and pierre lebrun quoted drager but that's still all the same tsn athletic got it yeah so but even so that seems like listen sean walker was is a good defenseman i guess we didn't know how good but i guess if you can you can ask anything are they still on a playoff spot the flyers yeah They're just, I think they're just outside. Dude, they're second in the Metro.
Starting point is 01:21:04 Yeah. So like. Oh, they are? Second in the Metro. That's why CJ. Oh my God. CJ was so right. He's like, you guys, March 8th.
Starting point is 01:21:11 You know, it's December something. Let's, we got months to make trades. The Flyers are in a great position. Why are they selling off their roster? The, like the Blue Jackets are approaching a point where they need to do something. Yes. The Ducks. You know who's fallen off hard?
Starting point is 01:21:26 The Caps. The Caps? The Caps are not even a wildcard team now. What? yeah yeah after they had a slow start and then they picked it up and they had a really good stretch there in november and then now they've like if the playoffs started today the lightning the caps the devils and the penguins would not make it something to pay attention to though there's a wild discrepancy in games played around yeah so the capitals have played the same amount
Starting point is 01:21:49 of games as the leafs and they're only like a two points out but but the the caps have 27 points leafs have uh 30 points uh everybody else ahead of them has played between 25 and 28 games the The Sens have only played 21. How does that happen? Sweden, I guess. They were one of the teams that went to Sweden, but all the other teams that went to Sweden had played at least two more games than the Sens
Starting point is 01:22:11 heading into last night. Okay. The Leafs had played two, and then one of the Red Wings or Wild had played three more. Since you mentioned the Capitals, shout out Alexander Ovechkin. Last night, he picked up his 1,500th point. Wow.
Starting point is 01:22:26 In the National Hockey League, he's the 16th player ever to do that. They were talking about on the panel in the intermissions. Steve, you wouldn't have seen this because you were doing the stream. Right. Will he hit 25 goals this year? Isn't that nuts? Dude, it's Ovi.
Starting point is 01:22:41 Stop. Stop. Don't bet against them. No. Are you sure it was 25? 25. It was 25. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:22:49 That was what the panel was. Yeah. I thought it was a lot. I had misremembered. I thought it was a lot higher. The game was called Factor Fiction. Will Ovi hit? ovi will miss or will not hit 25 goals this year and i think cheryl pounder and jeff o'neill both
Starting point is 01:23:02 said fact he will he will not hit 25 which i was like well he got five if he doesn't hit 25 this season there's no chance he catches gretzky um not this season i mean ever um like gretzky fell off a cliff people forget that he had like nine goals in his last year he had exactly nine goals that dude should have had 900 he should have been the first player to ever hit 900 goals he ended at nine or sorry 894 all he needed to score in his last year was 15 goals and he got nine right so but ov there hasn't really been a decline no there has not yet not as of yet and the last time we said ah he's done was 10 years ago and then he scored 32 goals in 48 games so you know what if the trade deadline is a long way away the end of the season is a long way away for
Starting point is 01:23:49 alexander ovechkin there's 82 games that's so many games yeah i believe dude i i yeah he's gonna score 20 more goals for the rest of the season to get there uh josh uh josh yohi uh who covers the penguins for the athletic just i just want to read you this headline to give you a sense of what's going on in pittsburgh yohi's 10 observation lackluster lifeless penguins fall quietly against the lightning jeepers that's it's not now i again i i never i i was on record of saying i hated dubas's uh july 1st i thought it was bad i think what's going on here is ownership brought him in and they said do what you can because we want to get at least one more shot with crosby malcolm letang and he did with eric carlson and ryan graves who's not been good
Starting point is 01:24:39 at all um six years and some other some other players but i wonder if and again it's it's really hard to bet against sydney crosby i wonder if who's at the end of this year fenway management can finally go to him and say listen sit we gotta we gotta wipe this clean and we gotta do something different if we're gonna get you another run at the cup because he's gonna stay in pittsburgh who crosby crosby the all the whispers i've heard over i would say the last three four years have been uh he there's a solid chance he won't there's a solid chance he would end his career somewhere other than pittsburgh so yeah it's just like montreal is as one name that i've heard out there and then uh um uh joining mckinnon in colorado
Starting point is 01:25:30 wow because you you say that but it's like oh matt sundin definitely gonna end his career as to leave martin broder is going to end his career as a new jersey devil you know you go down the list of greatest athletes in whatever sport you go brett farr is going to be a packer forever yeah it never happens that way most players don't do that no well there's always that one picture of that guy in the jersey and you're like oh yeah he played that one season there and that was weird yeah yeah i don't think ray bork regrets not ending his career as a bruin no you can't you You can't regret a Stanley Cup. You know, does Daniel Alfredson in a Red Wings jersey
Starting point is 01:26:06 or Mike Medano in a Red Wings jersey or Boreas Salming in a Red Wings jersey or anyone in a Red Wings jersey, Patrick Kane in a Red Wings jersey, does any of it look weird? Yeah, no, it all looks weird, but they were trying to take another crack at it. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:26:21 And then they'll just, they'll still be beloved by that fan base no matter what. Yeah. It's crazy. It was crazy the other day, yesterday actually, watching kyle lowry who is an active member of the miami heat going oh yeah i'm gonna retire as a raptor when i retire i'm gonna sign a one-day contract and i'll retire as a raptor like i mean we all know what sydney crosby is that's a penguin it's one of the most important players in penguins
Starting point is 01:26:47 franchise history but if it doesn't make sense here anymore i i don't think he would be stubborn enough to refuse a trade to a place that got him closer to a fourth cup see that to me like i i totally know what you guys are saying and i agree with it there's so many players that just like it just doesn't compute with me what's because you haven't seen it what's the difference well there isn't a difference yeah and i what i'm trying to say is that it's irrational what i'm what i'm saying okay but him not in a penguin's jersey like it's just something that i can't compute and i know fenway sports and entertainment are totally down with the rebuild totally down with changing things up and if honestly they got the they got the right guy to do it kyle dubas is
Starting point is 01:27:34 i i think kyle dubas would do a spectacular job rebuilding the pittsburgh penguins and probably getting incredible value for malcolm crosby letang um you know you name it i think eric carlson's probably there forever sorry eric um i don't know yeah i mean if he can be traded once he can be traded again they can retain on him now and i mean the biggest obstacle for trading him was the 11.5 million dollar cap it i know he doesn't have that i think the penguins no matter what no matter where they are if they're 10th at the deadline you have to buy you have to try and then as soon as you know the results so whether that's you don't make the playoffs or you don't make past the first round or whatever it is maybe they surprise a bunch of people tristan
Starting point is 01:28:15 jari goes on hot streak they go all the way to stanley cup finals you never know but if they don't make the playoffs they got two months to figure it out and i think the conversation has to be we tried yeah uh you pull out all the stops and then if you don't make it you've got two years where you didn't uh make it and you can have i think calm logical conversations with these guys where you go don't you want to yeah shot somewhere else and and i think crosby makes a lot of sense in colorado because they've been searching for that second center uh second center sydney can you imagine oh yes i can he would score 11 billion points yeah and then and then um you know by the time you know the pittsburgh penguins retool and turn it around i'm sure dubas is in
Starting point is 01:29:02 his fourth year as the gm and he's got three more years after that because he signed a seven-year deal michael misa to the pittsburgh penguins who knows i just i don't know it it just it feels like balkan i can see because he's been in trade rumors for 10 10 years letang we've thought is going to retire seven different times because of the career threatening injuries i think that player has more career threatening injuries um and happenstance frankly some of it um he's had literally multiple strokes and he's still playing hockey yeah it's unbelievable that's even the thing yeah there was a gift the other day of his face getting smashed into the glass this guy wants it man yeah so i i just i don't know it's just it's just it's kind of weird that
Starting point is 01:29:43 we might be here it's too early yeah we might be it could also be romantic about it and end his career and in pittsburgh the way you know mentoring young guys the way mario did for him but i don't know like i've mario also owned the team yes so that's a factor yeah i i don't think sid's going to be stubborn he's got they also might just make the playoffs and this is a moot point if they made so if they don't make the playoffs say they don't and then they and then they sit down they're like sid we're going to retool and where do you want to go sydney crosby at 37 years old 8.7 million dollars next year that could become the next best value contract in the nhl he's never had a bad contract ever how many points is he at in his career i know
Starting point is 01:30:29 what was the percentage of the cap when he signed 8.7 was it not it was pretty high yeah i think it was pretty like you were getting in the territory of mcdavid's contract before this or sorry this one yeah i'm looking at it is he on one of those deals that's currently illegal like no longer than eight years i don't think so no so his contract was 17.3 percent when he signed his wow his first 8.7 million dollar deal yeah and that was with race europe yeah and that was five years 43 and a half million and he still makes that number now and it was when he signed his 100 million dollar contract i guess he is on a on a contract that you that is technically illegal because that was it was a 12-year deal oh yeah you're right steve uh 14.5 percent of the cap now every year
Starting point is 01:31:20 of that he's been worth it yeah mcdavid's was 16.6 so wow two percent off yeah wow it was very similar wow yeah because i remember like people being upset with how much mcdavid was making like oh it's too much in like the austin deal and all that stuff and you can't win with that but when crosby signed his deal it was a large majority of the cap it was very similar just now that everything's been going on for the last 12 years you know it just looks great and no one with a brain was like nah too much for sydney crosby yeah um wow okay and do we want to do a press conference sure all right let's do it two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for
Starting point is 01:32:11 the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research. Together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer. Register today at pmcfwalk.ca I feel like
Starting point is 01:32:41 we should do one thing. What do we need to do? answer the question that i asked sydney crosby is 1529 points there you go uh oh yeah i feel like we should call out some ass hattery oh no uh famous words by yesterday about um shohei otani uh austin watson did you guys see austin watson last night on uh jeremy lazan at the end of the game there's three second left three seconds left austin watson's in the he's at his his own blue line and decides to take a slap shot to the other end of the ice because he's upset that the
Starting point is 01:33:22 lightning are about to lose again when the puck leaves his stick there's less than a second there's less than a second left in the game because the lightning can't stop losing and he's mad and he takes a slap shot and he hits jeremy lazan right in the knee like right off it might even hit the shin you know a little lower which also is painful i don't care how much protection you got on an nhl player took a slap shot to your shin and he went down oh yeah pissed mr austin watson that is some ass hattery and the seed angle podcast does not approve of your actions last night at worst it's chicken shittery of the highest order um at best it's just that's really fucking stupid what are you doing like the defense was well he's looking down at
Starting point is 01:34:15 the puck he wasn't actually aiming for lozon he was just trying to bomb one on net still what are you doing hey i have an idea look where the fucking puck is going he did you say he was fined was he because i didn't say that oh okay he was fined um how much was he fined the maximum allowable out of the cba it's five thousand dollars the maximum right i'm gonna go with it was probably less yes twenty three hundred or something twenty two thousand dollars oh so they didn't get tampa bay's austin watson has been fined two thousand twenty two dollars and fifty seven cents the maximum allowable under the cba for unsportsmanlike conduct so it must be oh it is the more unsportsmanlike conduct that must be well i don't know why it's so specific either and
Starting point is 01:34:55 i don't understand how that works but two grand guys that's live shot that's awesome watson two that is the nhl pa representing austin watson and ignoring jeremy lozon i think that's just a pre-existing deal no i know that but it's something the nhl pa is like no we need a maximum the nhl is like oh okay fine because we don't want our players losing that much money okay what about this motherfucker's knees yeah even if he didn't hit anyone it was it was an idiot move to just slap the puck down the ice the game's over well like i have it happens but like i that he was looking down at the puck is not a defense like oh okay so you're just is sending essentially a uh vulcanized rubber bullet just that no one into the universe just
Starting point is 01:35:45 here air good luck everyone bang so so i guess possible my question guys is we've seen austin watson play hockey before yeah is anybody surprised no this is who this guy is he sees red miss he does stupid shit former pred too he was there for a long time he was there for a long time senator too yes yes yeah i wonder if he would have played with lozon i think lozon might have been on the bruins when he was a i just think whenever austin watson is involved in something that is untoward i'm like yeah because it's austin watson it's just dumb it is that's his rep like he's like he's like a bad matt cook like it's a bad copy it's well maybe not quite as because matt cook was a crazy person just just a man like shouldn't have been employed raffy torres too man
Starting point is 01:36:33 like he did some stuff i'm like what is well the nhl went that's enough out of you yeah no relief yes yes i don't know if he ever played for them no he did not system leave legend no i think they simply paid him uh other thing other thing i want to do is so i mentioned this before uh steven a and it was on the tnt panel and the tnt panel was on the on the steven a's panel and the the two networks merged and they got steven a to play a game that they play over on inside the nba called who he play for yes i don't know if you guys are familiar with this game i love that game the game is called who he play for where they they they give chuck a random nba player's name and he's gonna tell you what team he plays for and steven they played it and it was very funny so i thought
Starting point is 01:37:25 hey why don't we play who he play for with adam and steve oh let's go that is this the nba or the nh no we're doing nh okay let's go yeah i'm like the nba would have been like i could just name like a starter and you guys would be out i'd be like uh the bucks so adam you ready i'm ready everything would be let me uh get a player here my internet's a little slow i don't know why the internet's being slow but it's gonna load here all right i'm gonna pull up a team uh all right james hamblin i think i know who he played for okay all on three two one you guys shout out you're both is he currently he is currently on an nhl roster
Starting point is 01:38:11 let me know when you're good to lock in your answer i'm good he's played 13 games so far this season james hamblin oh we're gonna count down you oh sorry so okay i'll change it i'll change a different team because i don't know no that's okay that's your answer i'm sorry i'm sorry who's your answer i'm gonna say the edmonton oilers james hamblin is an edmonton oh ramblin hamblin man that is one nothing steve dangle all right give me a second to pull up my second player wow one nothing it will play first to first of three he has a cool story i do not remember what it is
Starting point is 01:38:56 it's good that you remember that he has a cool story and i'll look it up later all right next up who he play for tyler tucker oh god tyler tucker has played 10 games for this team so far this season he has two career goals four assists uh six points one goal this season one assist tyler tucker tyler tucker tyler i'll even tell you he's a defenseman oh that's good thanks that doesn't help at all um man there are every year in the nhl it's just bunch of guys who you play for a bunch of guys the buffalo sabers adam who's your guess i'm gonna stick it in the same division i'm gonna go
Starting point is 01:39:52 tampa bay lightning he is a saint louis blue oh that sounds like a blue yeah yeah that sounds like a blue all right this one's gonna be a little easier who he play for oscar steen oh shoot i think i know oscar steen who he play for i think he either is or was hold on okay three two one we'll do a three two one because steve thinks he knows 12 games this season for oscar steen i know i'm familiar with the player i don't 100 know who he plays all right you ready adam three two one ducks boston steve dangle everybody Boston Bruins! Oscar Steen!
Starting point is 01:40:43 I've never heard that name before. Like, I don't know. I don't know, man. Okay, okay. Steve's one away from victory. All right. Let me pull up... By the way, I'm okay with that.
Starting point is 01:40:56 Very okay with that. Who he play for. Who he play for? I can't even say this name right. Tobias Bjornfort. okay oh steve thinks he's got it all right yes all right all right you got a guess ready adam yeah yeah i got three two one detroit the la kings and i believe he was selected with a leafs draft pick wow the la kings everybody that's who he played for well done uh who he played for god
Starting point is 01:41:33 him that's such a funny bet tyler tucker i'm gonna make it my mission in life to be a tyler tucker truther i'm gonna find out everything about him and i'm gonna get invited to a tyler tucker game um we'll bring that back out occasionally it's a great bit that's a great bit i love it and like it doesn't hurt his credibility one iota no no how does he know the 12th guy on the charlotte hornets he doesn't pretend to know he's just like i don't know i don't know man um i love him let me pull up a question by the way the best thing about the who he play for bit is they very often bring up the same player and he never knows he doesn't remember yeah they're like we did this one last week they are they brought up they brought up
Starting point is 01:42:24 one guy like at least three times and he never knows they are they're incredible they're fucking i'm unreal just such a great panel man yeah so we'll end on this question here it'll be the only one from the audience this is from even who wrote this on our discord please tell me steve addressed the story of the kangaroo that escaped the oshawa zoo and punched a police officer in the face uh i don't know if we've addressed that on we have not let's talk about it so what happened was there was someone was transporting a kangaroo to a zoo in Quebec, I
Starting point is 01:42:59 believe. Then what they did was they were traveling through the sunny hamlet of Oshawa, Ontario. This is so your wheelhouse. This is designed for me. It's a zoo story in Oshawa.
Starting point is 01:43:15 Fuck yeah. That is me. That is me baby. Were they playing Red Dead Redemption 2 when it happened? Oh, we needed like a leaf to get punched yeah this is you know me and then uh so they wanted to let the kangaroos out they have kangaroos at the oshawa zoo they have uh lots of stuff at the oshawa zoo i like going there you can be the animal's popcorn um i don't know if that's good for them but you can do it um they let the kangaroos out to stretch their legs i don't know exactly how this happened
Starting point is 01:43:48 but the kangaroo escaped where did they let them out like around the park while nobody was in there so i'm gonna say this is someone who has been to the oshawa zoo and knows the area they are lucky they found this thing it is not densely populated it's interesting that it was on the road when they found it like it was it stuck to the main road the funniest one honestly honest to god one of the funniest fucking videos i've ever seen there's this guy on the second day this kangaroo has been missing running through a field with like those big electrical towers or whatever just with a net just with a giant net running after i'm pretty sure it's just like a civilian with a net i don't know why he has this thing i'm gonna catch this kangaroo and i'm gonna be on the
Starting point is 01:44:37 news and he's just running through the field with a net that guy lives off a harmony road oh yeah no north taunton north of taunton yeah so like you you know the area a little bit like there is this kangaroo could have fucked off into a forest and still been living yeah yeah because you could go to northern like you could be go all the way into northern kangaroos are fast yeah like it's a slow animal i don't know one of the saddest things about living in oshawa was all the missing like animal posters yeah oh yeah our little dog yeah that's gone yeah i have bad news that's a coyote's dinner yeah like i i've i've told the story before i uh i was walking to a bar and we need to get back to the the kangaroo no no no i'm going to but i was i was walking to a bar
Starting point is 01:45:25 and me and a coyote scared each other it was in a field and i was in the sidewalk along the field and we both went, and as I walked away, I was staring at it and he was staring at me and we were both like, all right, we're cool, but fuck around and find out.
Starting point is 01:45:39 That's fine. And like, he's looking at me like, could I take it? And I was looking at him like, could I take it? I think I would have won, but I would have got hurt. I think that's a good point.
Starting point is 01:45:49 Coyotes are, they're not that big. And they also don't want to fuck around. No, they don't. They just want to be left alone. They don't. It's a kangaroo. They're terrifying.
Starting point is 01:45:58 Anyway, so this kangaroo, I believe was missing for like three days and like it has not been warm here i don't know what kind of temperatures kangaroos can sustain i know it gets cold in australia sometimes because it's a desert and deserts gets cold um but yeah there was like a manhunt for this kangaroo and apparently i haven't you know how whenever an nhl player gets a gruesome injury they tweet it why haven't we seen the photo of the cop and like i want to know what happened i dude i promise you if i get punched in the face by a kangaroo the first thing i'm doing
Starting point is 01:46:38 is posting it on social media going holy shit i broke my nose first thing i did was i posted a picture holy shit i got my nose broke yeah i mean you're a cop if you're a cop in canada i mean you get to hang your hat on that for the rest of your life yeah you were there when the Oshawa kangaroo was caught and it punched you in the face? It's interesting. I had this come up last night during one of my asthma attacks.
Starting point is 01:47:04 I was on TikTok. That's nice. I needed like 20 minutes. I'd come out of like a weird dream and then I couldn't breathe. And I'm like, you know what? I'm going to take 20 minutes to just go on TikTok.
Starting point is 01:47:11 They might've been related. And for whatever reason, Australian TikTok makes its appearance on my TikTok from time to time because I just find the country fascinating. That's enough with the giant spiders. That's enough. The amount of people that square up with a kangaroo and don't back down.
Starting point is 01:47:28 Oh, yeah. Like, they're like, you know what? No, I've had enough of you. I'm going. We're going. We're going. We're going. And the kangaroos are huge.
Starting point is 01:47:38 Oh, yeah. They got big muscles and traps. They lean back on their enormous tail that is purely made of muscles. Boom, like the Looney Tunes. No, not even the punch. They'll kick you. Oh, man. Because they're like a tripod, right?
Starting point is 01:47:51 They just balance on their tail. And this is absolutely my wheelhouse. I'm living the dream right now. They'll go back on their tail and kick you right in the fucking soul until it leaves you. And it, I just, they're psychos. They drown dogs. Yeah. They will lure animals into the water to drown them.
Starting point is 01:48:13 Yes. Because they're like, I'm taller and also strong and have no conscience. I'd love to. And I'll kill you. I'd love to hear from the Aussies that listen to this show, because I guess, because we all think kangaroos are cool, right? We've never seen one up close. No, there's a billion of them in Australia.
Starting point is 01:48:28 And apparently, they're just a pain in the ass. Yeah, because there's a bajillion. Yes. Because they've just been on that island forever. Yeah, and they're a dominant species. Yeah. It's wild. Anything that could eat them is, I don't know, I guess, in the water.
Starting point is 01:48:41 And now that I'm thinking about it, we had a kangaroo in on breakfast television once, and it might have been from the Oshawa Zoo. It probably was. he was like a pup like he wasn't very big yeah so he's about this tall but even he could he could if he wanted to go somewhere quickly he was there this so there's a photo or not a photo there's a video of someone driving alongside the kangaroo holy shit i knew they were fast i didn't like this thing is going it was speeding the sad the sad thing about the story is the poor thing was terrified yeah so maddie if you pull up the picture i got there if anybody's interested
Starting point is 01:49:15 you can go watch the body cam footage of the arrest of the kangaroo so my god and i in in the body cam footage i think is the moment he gets punched in the face because it is terrifying the way they're trying to wrangle i'm not gonna play the video for you you can go watch it if you want to watch it on your own but they are wrestling with this this kangaroo to arrest them and they throw them in the back of the whatever i don't know animal vehicle they have and yeah it it was it's a struggle that you can watch the body cam footage so and like they would have had to if they were going to quebec they would have had to go so far out of their way to get to the oshawa zoo like they would have had to well i guess maybe they could have been taken the 407 but like i just
Starting point is 01:50:00 don't know how they ended up at the oshawa zoo adam steve started thinking about the traffic i know that is the first thing that any person from the great toronto area has to think about lives his life by traffic right like he it really is a major factor in your world yeah because i live in this hellscape please no one move closer to where you gotta be please no one oh yeah i'll just do that then i'll just do that here let me go through my couch cushions and fucking do that like do not show show hey otani what it's like to drive through this fucking he won't have to yeah he The kangaroo probably had to deal with so much traffic on the 401. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:50:38 Probably did. That's the only reason they caught him. It was deadlock, man. It was 5 p.m., man. No, because if they could take the 401, they would have gone to the Toronto Zoo. And it wouldn't have been a problem. He was late for the GO train like Steve and was hopping along
Starting point is 01:50:52 but didn't make it as the doors closed. And that's why he's... That's why it happened. You got to give something to him. He had to take an extra second to go find his Presto card and he was late. Oh, God. This kangaroo is not that big.
Starting point is 01:51:02 um i don't know if it's fixed and i don't know if that makes it smaller or less aggressive or any of that uh i also don't know if it's a male kangaroo or a female i'm gonna say it was pretty aggressive it punched a guy in the face yeah yeah well and also like how i'm looking at this thing right now i don't know so they got they got something wrapped around its neck but beyond that i don't know how you would restrain this thing you just you'd have to simply tackle it and make sure its legs don't watch watch the video it's a it's a it's a fight yeah it's like a bunch of guys tie his arms together and stuff like that like you'd have to and like i i don't know do the durham regional police keep tranquilizer darts on hand like are they equipped to handle this
Starting point is 01:51:51 kangaroo like i'm trying to think of what animals they would typically have to deal with like i know there's coyotes there are sometimes wolf reports but i think it's most people freaking out because they saw a coyote yeah i look at him like he's fighting oh yeah up near the oshawa zoo like can you blame i don't know if there's bears in that area let me ask you something like first off a bear is not messing with that not messing with that uh kangaroo no way oh bear in the oshawa area no i mean do bear would a bear react to a kangaroo the same way a person would like like a bear in ontario would they be like the fuck is yes yes and they would probably and bears in ontario at least southern ontario run away they're black bears they don't want to be uh we're not talking
Starting point is 01:52:37 about like grizzly or polar bears like don't butt actually me thank you very much uh on that one but i you got to feel for the kangaroo here because he's like where the fuck am i yeah no everybody in this situation you gotta have sympathy for the animal it's snowing where the fuck am i like what is this shit and what is this hard ground i'm jumping on and then all of a sudden these these people that kind of look like me but they don't have tails are chasing me down and they got shit around my neck what now trying to wrangle me yeah no this is this has got to be traumatized oh my god this kangaroo is probably he didn't like hop off a flight from melbourne no i'm sure this is probably like a domestic canadian born kangaroo yes um zoo born zoo like that is
Starting point is 01:53:24 the strangest moment of any of those people's lives the kangaroo included yep being he's not a people but yes i know joe yes he is how dare you it's no both those cops the person why i was about to say the person filming that would be the cop um the kangaroo that dude running around the field with a net we have to post that video it's the funniest fucking thing i've ever seen it's so funny go go google it go google it there's a lot of images of people being like that's the kangaroo that's the kangaroo around oshawa and just taking random uh social videos it was an event well because i guess there's not as much to do in durham region there was a man missing a few weeks ago and so me and several friends just got in our cars and looked for him
Starting point is 01:54:13 Oh, that's very kind of you guys. We found them. One of my friends... So there was a park in Ajax and my friend foolishly in the middle of the night was like, I'm going to investigate the park. And I intentionally did not do that
Starting point is 01:54:26 because it's pitch black. And they came face to face with a buck. Wow. And that is something you do not want to be face to face with. Luckily, nothing happened. No, no. So yeah, all we do is
Starting point is 01:54:39 just wander around and encounter animals. That's all we do in Durham That's good And you're still technically in Durham, aren't you? It's like in the middle of it Just some final details on the kangaroo If anybody's wondering It is now back safe in the Oshawa Zoo
Starting point is 01:54:56 Recovering Oh, it's in the Oshawa Zoo Yeah, it's back They put it back there while it's recovering I wonder if it just popped the fence They're like, oh, we didn't know kangaroos could go this high I don't know That's crazy
Starting point is 01:55:08 So they put it back there And they're talking about how they captured it. The officer said, they actually just grabbed it by the tail. The female kangaroo punched one of the officers in the face during the apprehension. Later, police clarified the officer had been struck, not necessarily punched by the kangaroo. And then you can go watch the body. You'd rather get punched by a kangaroo. Those claws are not to be fucked with.
Starting point is 01:55:35 I think it was more of a push. Not a claw. but yeah what a what an event this week in durham dude dude and i'm happy that the kangaroo's safe yes because as you outlined with your incredible zoo knowledge it could have been a and knowledge of oshawa it could have been a disaster okay like there are legitimate like people who uh are like trained and everything and like those are the keepers those are the people who spend their days with the animal and interacting with the animal and and feeding the animal but the people who transport the animals i don't know if they necessarily went to like kangaroo school like
Starting point is 01:56:15 like for everyone it's pretty specific and how this part of the world yeah yeah like uh like dude i've i've spoke to people who work for other zoos not the toronto zoo who um they just applied for a job and they got one yeah and they're like can you do this and they're like well i can try and there's this guy there's this guy is the Bowmanville Zoo closed enough that I can tell stories about it that wouldn't have been okay
Starting point is 01:56:44 I think we saved that I know some things about the Bowmanville Zoo when they got shut down I'm like yeah that makes sense that makes sense by the way they got shut down on a TV show that I was on I have that story too and we'll save that for another day
Starting point is 01:57:00 let's go Let's kick the action. What a story. Adam Wilde is actually Justin Bieber's dad. Yeah. Really? Justin Bieber. That's right.
Starting point is 01:57:09 Involved in the Bowman Zoo. That's right. Yeah. The Bowman Zoo. The Bowman Zoo. Yeah, that's what they called it. Scotty Bowman Zoo. The Bowman Zoo.
