the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake
let's go all right now i want to just quickly mention the schedule of the show to start the
show because today and tomorrow we will have steve dangle podcasts and then we will walk through the
sahara desert without any water through wednesday and thursday because steve is a nerd and he's
going to truro to prove to people that he can read yep which i think is cool and i'm excited
for you i know you've been practicing i'm gonna read a page of a harry potter book to prove that
i can read i thought it was going to be money ball but harry potter's just as good it's a 50
cent floyd mayweather reference okay so also i forgot our own schedule uh i forgot about that
can you look at me and uh figure out just by looking at me that i forgot our own schedule
uh why why because i'm wearing a green shirt because i thought this was our last show before
st patrick's day oh it's not yeah it's not our next on the way and i was like oh you idiot
now you have to wear that same shirt tomorrow i might
if you pre-wear green you get pinched that's true that extra i made it up right now uh i
actually remember jesse was on this show i remember when blake and i were working on that
show on kiss together and she said if you didn't wear green on st patrick's day you got a slap and
i believed her and then she slapped me on the radio and jesse got it on video and it hurt she
hit me like in the face yeah like my eyes were watering she freaking Adam Adam you got a concussion
from a co-worker on the air sorry you got a concussion from a co-worker on the air basically
yeah don't call her mother don't call her your mother crazy shit back don't do that I've been
I was naked in that studio more than once it was crazy what is happening no anyway um let's let's
go to some serious news like the world cup of hockey you can get tickets to Steve's event it's
a free event yes but you gotta get your ticket to confirm that is right at the top of the
description of this podcast last i checked it was sold out but that's that's why i didn't mention
that yeah because i checked no like can people just show up and crowd and make a scene and maybe
get the fire involved yeah like the beatles yeah probably not i don't know i think it's a free
event just show up see what happens i don't endorse that i do i don't endorse that message
let the record show when the lawsuit comes out that i said nothing all right uh now oh yeah
riot at the turo library that'd be crazy because of ajax youtuber yeah i don't know hey so so uh
i want to i want to bring this up because i think this is so funny when kevin weeks gets a scoop
he doesn't like he he he frames it as though he's he's hinting at something but he gives it all the
way yeah and uh i want to play this video for you because i i think it's hilarious i still think his
forehead thing is hilarious yes uh i've never not i've never gotten tired of that bit but basically
he said big news coming world cup of hockey calgary and edmonton and i was like so i guess
the world cup of hockey is going to calgary and edmonton i have no further questions yeah
Thanks, Kev.
I don't even need to watch the video.
That's great.
But here's the video anyway for anybody that wants to know.
Breaking news, breaking news.
I'm hearing some great news about the province of Alberta,
specifically Edmonton and Calgary,
regarding the upcoming World Cup of Hockey.
Let's go.
Which is exactly what his tweet said.
Is that his home?
Yeah, I was just going to say,
what a nice staircase, marble floors, Kevin.
The staircase is very nice.
He didn't have to make this video.
He just wanted to flex the staircase.
What is this little stone sitting area?
You know, it's a motif, Jesse.
It's a motif, a little stone motif to break up the white
because there's a lot of white in there.
So you want to balance it out.
Like the couch and the reflection, a little white couch or something.
I wonder if he's got any Hermes blankets.
That's a nice home.
You knew that.
Nice corner of a home.
Yeah.
I'd say Kevin Weeks corner is what I'd call it.
Now, Pierre Lebrun also went out and spoiled the joke or spoiled it.
and he said the nhl is expected to announce its world cup of hockey plans today after day one of
the gm meetings here in palm beach florida that's a nice flex pierre i guess you're in palm beach
too ah i'm jealous the best on best event goes february 2028 which is great yeah that's great
uh and i'm excited for alberta to kind of get that and i feel like we got to be there for that
like that's going to be sick um my question is the big bird how do they choose who gets the
championship game because calgary and edmonton i don't know if you guys know this have a really
big rivalry and i think one city is going to be real pissed about not getting the other one and
i just want to know are they going to pit them against each other and have a fight to the death
over who gets the championship game they should play a game they should play a game for the
oilers play a game oilers flame oilers flames for where no you would have to do every nhl player
from calgary and every nhl player from edmonton even better against each other if you're truly
trying to do calgary versus build a team yeah i i have long wanted something like that like i guess
you can't call it the canada cup or the city cup provinces versus provinces or cities versus cities
cities versus cities is probably a little too difficult to do but province versus province
now calgary and edmonton have to have to team up oh they have that in curling right like curling
oh yeah yeah the province by province so i don't know why hockey couldn't why not cool that would
be sick ontario would have a really stacked team like bc would look really crazy alberta would be
good they'd have kill maker yes it would certainly and bobby mcmahon cars score of many goals
you know i think there's a uh there's something to that and it's interesting because i'm you know
they're talking about the world cup 2028 uh and one of the things that happened this year was the
the islanders were robbed of their uh local all-star game and the all-star game is always fun
it's just not that fun to watch it's always fun to be there and be around and that's why we've
always kind of talked about the all-star game as like a local event when we had it in toronto in
2024 really fun in person fun event 100 but like you know if you're watching on tv it kind of
stinks yes and that's okay right well it's not okay they can do better than that and they did
with four nations and then they had the olympics this year so instead of getting an all-star game
they got matthew schaefer which i think is nice um solid but they are getting something next year
and my question has always been what are they going to do because it's going to be world cup
olympics world cup olympics every two years yeah you're gonna have you're probably not gonna do a
four nations again because you're gonna have world cup i don't think it would make sense so could you
do and i was going to ask you guys what would you do but that province or state versus state
province versus province idea it's kind of a neat tournament idea well yeah there you go you could
have like ontario alberta bc but also like i don't know minnesota well couldn't you texas and
you couldn't you could do it regionally yeah i could do it in four quadrants so it could be a
not a four nations but like four quadrants northeast northwest southeast southwest that's
an interesting thought there's there's something like think about the first line for the southwest
matthews tage thompson matthew nice oh hot damn yeah that'd be all right yeah you'd have a lot
of california players in there you'd have you could figure that out yeah dude i'm into it
i'm into it i'm right into it like we need more fun ideas not less yeah right so if you're
listening to this going nah why why not what's your right i think it's fun yeah yeah what's
your stupid idea i've like like listen we knew the world cup was coming like this is not
shocking or anything what are they going to do in 27 that's my question or 26 like oh no 27 27
yeah what are they doing in 27 they owe the islanders and their arena one event so that'll
happen in 27 just depends on what it is okay now let me ask you guys this has the all-star game
been away long enough because we didn't get it in 25 and 26 that you're like i'm willing to i'm
willing to go through that again no the ulster game is kind of crappy it's also a 75 year old
idea yeah right like in every sport couldn't watch television all the time and see all the games and
it was cool to see oh these players are on my television screen because i couldn't see them
at any point during the season because i only have local uh cable networks and four channels so
the also game it's kind of played out now we love watching that on chgh channel seven yeah you know
like it's just that's yeah sorry steve go ahead we've seen enough of 82 game nhl seasons where
the players are like i'm not trying tonight i'm not trying every single night and then next year
it's going to be 84 and then we're gonna like i don't know you you always run the risk of like
getting embarrassed by some of the guys that you bring nikita kucherov uh who just don't give a
shit at all you're gonna have the guys who are enthusiastic connor mcdavid and they make the
world go around but i i think what we found out obviously from the olympics because it's the
olympics but also four nation face-off something needs to be at stake and it has to be a little
bit more than money because there's like a million dollars at stake for the 2024 all-star game
whatever it's got to be more than that yeah no it 100 has to be more than that no you gotta
uh pride has to be on the well i was thinking just to add to your idea if we did it a regional
a regional cup like northeast northwest southeast southwest not only money but all the european
players and everybody from russia go into a draft and you get to fill out your team so it's like you
know with the first pick team southeast selects nikita kucherov that'd be crazy and you base the
draft order on the total number of points that each region has so if your region has connor
mcdavid in it you're probably going last and then you can get and then the region with the least
amount of points for the players they have on their team they get to pick first would that be
sick this sounds very convoluted yeah it's like everything the nhl ever does jesse you just put
nikita kucherov and like a crew neck that says vermont i like that i like i think that's fun
i think it'd be good i think it'd be good there's something there totally i just think i i'm just
like i i'm i'm worried about next february mostly because i don't want to go back to an all-star
game i don't want to go back to that not one that doesn't have new slash good ideas because not
every new idea is good right right yeah like and they got connor mcdavid on the last one to go like
hey hey guys he started calling guys around the league going i want you to be here i want you to
show up and be great and whatever and we gotta we gotta really own this um i don't think that
connor can make that format work anymore i think the skills competition like i it needs to be open
to everybody absolutely is that what you think that's yeah i'm not interested in uh watching
fastest skater just between the guys who are there because what are the odds that the fastest
skater is actually in the building well connor's there it's good yeah i don't think he's ever won
it oh that's interesting like barzal won it in st louis he might have won it once i can't believe
you can even remember that like larkin it well i was there it helps okay right but yeah um like
hardest shot like last night this is such a stupid thing to get distracted by but philip myers philip
myers just took a casual lazy shot on net and it comes up on screen 96 i go what yeah there are
dudes who take a running start at the all-star game and lean into it and they throw up like 92
96 just casually on your back foot i remember how freddie modine was a leaf everybody knew he had
the hardest shot in the league but he didn't make the all-star game till he was a lightning player
and he i think he won hardest slap shot he had like a hundred mile an hour fast slap shot when
was the last time the leafs had a blue and white competition it's been a while right like to do
those yeah ty domey would win fastest skater one year it was nathan parrot and other teams still
do that i know ottawa senators have their little uh all-star thing every i want to say the canucks
yeah a bunch of teams yeah you know and the the thing about the not bringing or not having just
the all-stars participate in the skills competition like that's not a new idea it's just something the
nhl hasn't adopted the nba has been doing it forever if we if you've watched the nba dunk
competition the last couple years mac mcclung who is a g league player has been in it several times
and won it because he's he's basically like a youtube dunker now and with how good he is at
doing those things and the three-point competition same like you don't need to be in the all-star
game to participate in that because they just want the best three-point shooters you know do
people have an issue with matt mcclum winning it though jess like are they feeling like oh it's
it's it's watering it down or no i think he does things that nba players can't do and so it's more
interesting you know it's just all about the entertainment factor but the uh the conor mcdavid
fastest skater thing he is a four-time champion four times he won it most recently in the most
recent fastest okay i'm an idiot in 24 and then he won it three consecutive years in 17 18 and 19
that's so funny he's never won he won it in 2019 oh i went to the 2020 17 18 19 that's right yeah
okay you went to the 2020 all-star game right before the season was canceled right yes oh my
god wow that's that's crazy yeah so you know i don't know there's got to be we got to do something
like i did like what they were trying with you know didn't they try like shooting a puck out
of the stands onto the ice that was in st louis and it was agony yeah because they shot it so
poorly if they had if they had shot like and i'm talking it wasn't much better and used it
if they produced that in person it wasn't it wasn't much better like no one they didn't put
enough thought into can anyone do this because no one did it like they're nhlers but they're
also not Zach Bell like you're not asking them to do a Zorro into the air and then catch your
stick and shoot like there's still it's still really difficult to do this kind of stuff so
I'm glad you brought him up because I think guys like Zach Bell and Pavel Barber need to be involved
because that's a great idea they could because they can't win NHL players can't let them win
yeah those are content creators they're very good hockey players they're content creators
please show up and do something insane so that a youtube content creator does not win
the shootout competition whoa that's a good point yeah 100 i like that 100 it needs needs to happen
that's a cool idea and there you go let's be honest take it it's free nhl players don't love
to be i know they here's the thing with nhl players they are charismatic they just don't
like to be it in front of the camera so at least with content creators you know they have to be
because they got to sell this right you're trying to find new people and if you had an if you're
pavel barber and you have that opportunity you go and you sell the shit out of pavel barber's brand
you know what i mean yeah dude he like jumps off of ice ramps and dunks basketball yeah in his
backyard like that's so much better than watching a dude pass accurately i don't who cares who oh
man what a pass yeah to a net shut up do flips do fun things there's a way to for the nhl to
kind of abandon the all-star part of it and just do some sort of fan convention and for their
advertising partners really because that's what the all-star game's really about it's about a
collective place where their advertising partners and everybody wants to sponsor everything can
get the stars there to do all the fan engagement stuff and it's about the fans of that city having
a cool weekend based around nhl or so i don't know if it's like some sort of just you know
like fanatics has their fan fanatics fest yeah we'll call it chel expo yeah some sort of just
like nhl expo that happens in the middle of the season you bring all the guys there there's some
sort of skills competition portion of it but in terms of like playing the game that doesn't exist
you know but maybe it's like a three-day event yeah instead where we just bring the guys to the
city and they do some sort of all-star competition maybe there's a three-on-three little thing about
it but it's not about the game itself and just about that city and the fan engagement and the
advertising part about it yeah i think maybe that's a better idea than just having a traditional
all-star game i love that idea uh the problem they would say is how would you make that good
for television it doesn't have to be that's what i'm trying to like move them past agree nobody
wants to watch that because you know what i would argue if nobody wants to watch it why are we making
this thing if you play that properly you wouldn't need the television angle although the networks
would hate this uh because you could get what you needed from one minute social clips like the
problem with television on its whole and i love television uh is that it needs block programming
this is three hours of this whereas social media i'm like flipping and it's like well here's
something on charles de gaulle and then here's here's how you should eat food in the morning and
uh you should you should drink water before your coffee like that's what tiktok is right it just
changes the channel for you very very quickly i think you could argue that you have the same reach
if you got a bunch of viral moments in one weekend like a fan expo instance uh you get the same reach
the same market penetration without the boring television programming and i'll say i mean i
remember when the all-star game was here uh we did an integration with pepsi and remember i was down
at the pepsi booth and you guys came and hung out and sam reinhardt sam reinhardt was there yes i
do it was really super nice guy um and then i can remember connor mcdavid and austin matthews
walked in and they did this whole thing and the crowd was just bonkers for these guys i think
you're right jess maybe it's that i just feel like 2027 i'm like we're gonna go back to the
aren't we and i don't trust the nhl you know based on how the all-star game in vegas went
remember when they tried all that weird shit and it was slow as hell not really you don't
remember that shot stuff by the fountain like the day before and they oh it was just like pre-recorded
oh yeah it'd be better if i did remember it and went oh that was bad i don't even remember well
that's that shows you how good it was and then uh and then you know like to go from to from that
like the 2024 all-star game was i don't remember the game but the it was fine um i don't remember
where the the four nations olympics and then to fall to this i'm like we got to find something
we got to find something that i mean that's the long and short of it yep you can't go
four nations olympics to a dud give me fun or does it make world championship or world cup look
better because you had such a dud the year before you're allowed to be to try and do well all the
time ah steve what did you just say under your breath about the 2024 all-star game i don't
remember where it was that was the one that was here i thought that was we had multiple shows
here i thought that was longer ago no that's that's the one oh that's the most recent all-star
game actually yeah yeah all right yeah i thought that was like three or four years ago 24 was here
25 is four nations and 26 is olympics i'll be damned all right
ah damn well to you it must have been great to be fair to you you don't remember much
outside of like...
Stats.
Leafs moments.
Yeah.
Who wants to learn about Boyd Devereaux today,

Anyone want any Martin Gerber stats?

Now, I want to tell you that this morning, we released a brand new Agent Provocateur
where we go through, as some of Alan's clients were moved at the trade deadlines.
We talked a little bit about that.
No, no.
There you go.
Not just at the trade deadline, after the trade deadline, which Alan explains is possible
because it's not a trade deadline it's a trade deadline for if you want to play in the playoffs
yeah or it's a trade deadline for if you want to play on the nhl team yes but he had some guys go
from ahl to ahl to be traded after the deadline it's not unique it's unique ah and he did
the very unique scenario where if say he had a client who was a unrestricted free agent right now
they could sign with an nhl team and play out the rest of the regular season but then not be
eligible for the playoffs so they could help a team for the last 15 games of the season and then
be gone so that's so fast in theory you could load up if you're in a playoff race with some vets
and like get some fresh bodies in there yes but there isn't a he says there isn't a pool of ufas
out there right to load up with like who is available i bet max patch already still in shape
i'm not naming names i'm not naming names i think but alan himself who represents people
who play hockey throughout the idea of somebody signing with the team and helping them for
15 games and then leaving i know max is coaching hockey somewhere right now but i'd miss him
he said it was a wild idea ah because minnesota i'm loading up no no it's my last name steve
why why does the cinnamon synonym as like oh it's crazy and like oh that's that's so crazy
what could happen not as in the hockey team that's ridiculous steven now i also think it's
interesting because uh so a couple of years ago when it started to come out well maybe it was
last year started to come out that the cat was going to explode this year and steve did not
believe it uh alan was going this cap could go as high as 97 million bucks friedman was like 95.5
and it ended up being 95.5 but alan was wrong the math he's like the math should have been 97
but they flattened it for the owners and that's why the owners and the pa for the next three years
have agreed on a flattening of the cap because what they didn't want i don't know why they didn't
want this but they didn't want an nba situation where you could put the golden state warriors
together uh in 2016 if you remember i think the cap went up 20 or 30 million dollars like season
to season yeah so if you guys under contract and then a major kevin durant ish player becomes
available you can just add no problem and so here's what happens though after that because
now it's only two years from now that there's no flattening of the cap anymore uh play the clip
jesse i guess it caused a little bit of noise when i put out there that for the 2028 29 season
the number the league is kicking around as the new upper limit they announced uh three years
and now i'm going into year four 28 29 of approximately 123 million we're currently at 95.5
it's a big jump that's a real big jump and what's interesting about that is there's already owners
complaining behind the scenes that they can't afford it damn here's the thing so uh yeah here's
the thing about that it's total bullshit uh they absolutely can if you're a billionaire and you
need to spend an extra 10 million dollars a year that's one percent of the value of your franchise
you can afford it and that's at the low end by the way the Leafs are in like the four and a half
billion dollar range you know you're talking about like Utah and the Senators or whatever
those teams are the bottom end of it and they're creeping up to 1.5 billion dollars in valuation
and you can't spend an extra 10 million if they i don't believe that for a second if they can pay
players nothing they would yeah you know what playing for the canucks is a great way to get
your foot in the door if they could pay workers nothing they would oh yes so yeah and that's why
you have unions and that is why the union collectively bargained for 50 50 and he goes
and he talks about, too, you know, one of the things that the NHL had and that drove Ilya
Kovalchuk to the KHL 10 years ago was escrow. And sometimes that escrow was as high as 20,
25 percent, which meant every single paycheck you got, the NHL held back that money and for years
held it back so they could make sure a couple of years later when they did the calculations on that
season that the revenue split between the players and the NHL was 50-50. Now what's happening is
escrow is at like two percent and they're all getting fifty and hundred thousand dollar checks
a couple of years later because it's been that way in the nhl is extremely profitable right now
it's like everyone goes to the all-star game yeah right everyone gets that bonus well even the guys
making like seven eight hundred grand are getting money back and they might be retired and getting
that means a lot to them absolutely yeah i mean i listen i don't care how much money you make 50
grand is 50 grand man 50 grand is 50 grand but like those guys who make a career you know
let's say they play six years in the nhl they go up and down and they play a lot in the ahl
they got to make that money last yeah and it's really not a ton it's a lot in a vacuum but spread
over i don't know 30 40 years it's not a lot no no it's not now i encourage anybody who hasn't
listened to an episode of agent provocateur to just check it out like go back into the archives
and list the most recent episode and some of the other ones because it's filled with a lot of gems
you listen to like insider podcasts and they're trading information and they know what they can
say and they can't but alan isn't beholden to rules of nhl insiders and that he can say kind
of what he wants because he doesn't have to answer to betman or anybody within the game
and he knows what's happening all the time and he gives out information on the show all the time and
it's it's a really good listen there's connor mcdavid hey you know maybe we should look at
changing the way we do nhl player safety and then there's alan walsh it's a kangaroo corner
yes the things that like you can't say when you're a player into a microphone
the agents aren't they don't have those restrictions he can just call out peros which
he's been doing for years and explicitly explaining the process and how convoluted
and wrong it is and he's been saying it forever when i when i saw judd moldaver do it i was like
this is bit infringement yes well alan alan did tweet he's like some people are late to the party
but it's good to have them here and we've been saying this for a long time and i love that it's
it's a top story right now because all of the things that sherwood and mcdavid and moldaver
all those guys and what we're gonna go through i'm gonna run through the whole statement thing
all those things alan's been saying for years and people have been calling him crazy yeah and
and this to me and he's not a guy to gloat on that but i tell you man if i were him i would
fucking be he was never wrong just early that's right that'd be a great name for his book it was
like when kiprios was like uh it was like kiprios on shea weber he was not wrong he was just a year
early yeah remember you said oh his foot uh shea weber's foot's bad and he's not gonna play he's
gonna have to retire 12 months later his foot was bad and he had to retire he knew the exact injury
and spelled it out as just weber found a way to play through that injury for the next season and
then eventually that injury cost him the rest of his career steve stayos to the sins oh yeah steve
i wasn't wrong i was just early you fired a man who was in a position and i'm looking to fire
yeah well and then he got turbo fired so and it was his fault so oh he was a little bit better i
guess i just i bet pierre dorian has never forgiven you pierre dorian's in your walls
that's okay that's all right um all right let's talk about this uh the suspension for
Radko Gudis because on Friday's show we didn't know what it was yet and so I know you probably
are like wait a second haven't you guys talked about this I kind of had to go back and I was
like wait a second did we talk about it no we didn't um and as expected uh uh five games because
it was not an in-person hearing it was an over the phone hearing and Jesse can we play the video
but not play.
Yep.
I just want to hear the audio
and hear the NHL's
explanation for this.
Yeah, I wore the hoodie
that you can get
in the SDPN shop,
sdpnshop.ca.
High-sticking history!
Yeah!
We will see the graphic
at the end of this video
by the Department
of Player Safety
on why they decided
to suspend
Radko Gudis
for five games.
Thursday night in Toronto,
Ducks defenseman
Rakko Gudis was assessed a major
penalty and a game misconduct
for kneeing Maple Leafs forward Austin
Matthews, causing an injury.
As the video shows, Matthews
gets a pass from a teammate in front of the
Ducks goal, with Gudis skating back
towards a slot with speed to
defend against the scoring chance.
In an attempt to make a defensive play
on Matthews, Gudis leads with
his knee, jutting it forward
and making forceful, direct contact
with Matthews.
Oh.
He's only got one leg left.
It is one of the craziest,
sturdiest knees I've ever seen.
By the way, it's right at it.
I also love that in that they say
in an attempt to make a defensive play,
there's no attempt at a defensive play here.
An attempt to cover his ass
for being wildly out of position.
Did you notice he got suspended
and the Ducks instantly got way better?
Oh, Ducks fans have wanted him gone.
Oh, I know.
Listen, I'm still in the Pro Ducks lobby.
I'm anti-Gudis, but I'm pro-Ducks.
Now, when they teach you to play hockey, they say, lead with your knee.
That's how you play.
All right.
And making forceful direct contact with Matthews, causing him to fall to the ice.
This is kneeing.
It is important to note that Gudis is in control of this play.
We acknowledge Gudis' assertion that he is attempting to make a full body check and prevent a goal.
But this contact cannot be excused as a play in which evasive or sudden movements by either player are the primary cause of the knee-on-knee contact.
If he wants to deliver this hit, the onus is on Gutis to ensure that he makes an approach that allows him to deliver a legal full-body check.
Instead, having led with an extended knee and now finding himself lined up outside of Matthews' core,
Gutis leans towards contact with Matthews in a way that results in a forceful, dangerous, and direct knee-on-knee collision.
To summarize.
There we go.
Get it up.
High sticking.
High sticking.
This is kneeing.
Matthews suffered an injury on the play.
Gutis has been suspended four times previously in his 881-game NHL career, with his last suspension occurring over seven years ago.
the department of player safety has suspended ratko gutis for five games that was a pregnant
buzz the department of player safety one two three really has suspended one two three ratko
gutis for five games yeah a little spice on that little i thought they went a little deeper than
usual with that explanation because they know they're under fire yeah yeah no they knew it was
gonna be unpopular uh no i okay they knew it was gonna be unpopular but usually with their
explanation um there's justification for like why it wasn't more they didn't do any of that
they they're just like this is bad here's one angle of it being bad that's so true here's
another angle of it being so bad here's a third angle of this is one of the worst things i've
ever seen five games and there's a reason for that to them five games is a lot because
the nhl doesn't care we've talked about this so long like again i'm the biggest champion of
the talent in the league right now. It has never been better. It's never been in a, in a healthier
place. The young players, the things they can do. Oh my God. It's amazing. I've never been more
disenchanted with the leadership of the sport. So let's, let's talk about two things, 2005, 2006,
they changed a lot of the rules coming out of the lockout and a group of rusty players,
hundreds of rusty players who had either been playing in europe or in the minors or not at all
in the 2004-2005 season they come back and weirdly they have trouble adapting to these rules
so rather than that was an ugly season to watch well it was fun a lot of goals jason allison just
harvested points yeah he had over 60 points on a team that didn't even make the playoffs but like
it was crosby there was ovechkin you know there was there was this great crop of talent joe
thornton put up 400 points um jonathan chichu anyway steven focus focus um instead of letting
the players adapt to the new rules they just walked them back they just walked them back
why did you go with the new rules in the first place well you thought they were good
why did you stop calling them well because there were too many calls yeah you don't remember like
that first week of the season everything was a penalty yes it was ugly it was eight penalties
per team per game yes yeah they tried to come up with a bunch of new rules and then they're like
okay yeah like you said let's walk them back but they didn't let the players adapt the players
didn't want to adapt i i don't know what it was but they simply went let's just walk it back
so and people are going to say well there were too many penalties yes there were no argument
here we don't generally want there to be that many penalties but the best way to arrive at
fewer penalties is the players stop doing things that break the rules and instead you just let the
inmates run the asylum you went oh okay we'll just lower the standard oh put that on a t-shirt
the nhl just lowered the standard brendan shanahan for all his warts as leafs president
was the head of the department of player safety and he would hammer guys with suspensions long
one he was the one that instituted the twitter account and the videos too yes like man uh he
changed the game he did there are i genuinely believe he could work in the nhl again and do
a very good job it's just when he'd be a good commissioner when he's damn he would you know
he would it was it as leaf's president it was when he got too much into the micromanaging and
like you gotta let the gm do his job yeah right like if you hired me what are we it became less
about change in the organization more about preservation of job right he was very effective
so he's in the middle of a story i know no yeah no but that's me getting distracted all right my
bad my bad he increased the suspensions and then he left to go do something else i think it was
briefly stefan can tell and then they go to george peros george per five is a george peros five is a
Brendan Shanahan 10 right and a lot of Leaf fans kept going back to the suspension and I'll go back
to the suspension because it still stands out as something that truly genuinely makes no sense
after over 1,000 games in the NHL Jason Spezza in a 56 game season got a six game suspension for
kneeing neil pionk and kind of a weird play where he was definitely trying to he was trying to
inflict damage for sure but it was a weird play he got six games in a 56 game season that is the
equivalent of an eight or nine game suspension in an 82 game season he hammered jason spezza
and radko gudas comes waltzing in one of the dirtiest players in the league he gets his fifth
suspension for his fifth different thing but and it's five and that's considered but it's been
seven years oh kiss my ass it was uh a lifetime for jason spezza and that didn't matter right
five is considered throwing the book at them oh you're a joke you're such a joke i can we please
be done with this person i don't need to be as polite about it as connor mcdavid did he's bad
at his job can we just talk about like calmly calmly okay this is me being a good boy george
peros which knee is not good oh how dare you how freaking dare you george george peros is awful at
this and everyone knows he's awful at this and why do we tolerate this i don't understand a wrinkle
that i'm very happy you brought uh jason spezza up a wrinkle in all of this that's come out recently
um is that the nhl and george peros is also afraid now of the nhlpa because any suspension that is
above six games they can appeal and that's happened in the jason spezza suspension where
they it was six games and then they appealed it down to four so they have been leaning towards
george peros and co suspensions of five and less because they don't want to get into a legal battle
which essentially the appeal is a pissing match what do you do all day and they don't want to have
to keep handing out suspensions and then those suspensions get reduced so he doesn't want to do
his job they have been leaning towards to appease the pa or get out of talking to the pa giving
these five games and less suspension austin matthews makes the nhlpa a hell of a lot more
money than radko gutis does yeah and the pa will always stand up for the guy losing money in a
little bit of an awkward situation where they do represent both sides they are on radko gutis's
side and on austin matthews they will always take the aggressor side and when these suspensions are
being handed out and they are a little too high i don't think the majority of players agree when
the pa is even defending their own brethren in radko gutis and these other guys who get six or
more but that is their duty to do that and they have been going heavy at these appeal processes
and they have been winning more consistently and it makes nhl is afraid of that and it makes the
nhl look weak exactly and it just like i told you last week with ann lauer getting that pick back
makes the nhl look weak yeah makes betman look weak it does and jesse that's such a really good
that's such a great distinction because the nhl is all we're talking about on the stream last night
people are like well i don't understand why wouldn't they stand up for the injured player
the injured player is getting paid the suspended player isn't that's what they're getting paid now
they're getting paid it's yes it's austin matthews he's generally generationally wealthy now he's
going to get another contract after this one he's going to be fine what about when it's not
what about when it's some guy well then it's some guy and no one cares and they're not exactly and
it's not going to be not a union right and i you can we can argue that but let's let's let's go to
the Leafs on this one okay so the Leafs who you know earlier this season one of the main issues
we had with the Leafs is they would not is Chris Tannev dead is Nylander dead or are they coming
back this year we did not know what the Toronto Maple Leafs injury situation was ever and it's
because Brad's got a policy of we're super secret even though everybody can see it no and it doesn't
it doesn't make sense but what the Leafs did here when they put out a statement and then we'll get
to judd moldaver's statement you might not have heard the name judd moldaver but you will um
they x they exercise what we call soft power right hard power is going in and punching people
hey i don't like it wham soft power is going let me just throw this out there and sway public
opinion the toronto maple leaves do not do not publicly disclose injuries and would not have
without austin matthews and judd moldaver's approval however it's pretty clear why they got
it and what they said on twitter on march 13th which is friday friday night after our show of
course is the toronto mate beliefs announced today that captain austin matthews sustained a grade
three mcl tear and a quad contusion which is just a heavy heavier bruise on march 12th during the
second period of the team's game against the anaheim ducks matthews will be re-evaluated in
approximately two weeks a further update will be provided at that time he will miss the remainder
of the 2025-26 season so he's missing 16 games and a chunk of his offseason while radco misses
five and gets to go to the playoffs play the stretch and go to the playoffs now justice oh no
an eye for an eye but i would agree so everybody that's like well he shouldn't miss as much time
as austin that's not how this works but i do think and i think we all agree and i think the entire
NHL was really surprised by it now we had on Friday night after this a statement from Judd
Moldaver and Judd Moldaver is Austin Matthews agent you're like oh god of course his agent
would do that well not only did Judd do it Judd also got well Judd and his clients all had
something to say Connor McDavid he for sure would sure and these are all guys that are Judd is the
one of the hot younger agents
in the league. Imagine you've got
Connor McDavid and Austin Matthews. I think he's got
Yossi as well. He does. He's
got a crazy friggin client list. He's
come out of nowhere. This guy in the last
510 years and he's he's I think he's still
like in his early 40s
if you want. Oh my God. Matthews
McDavid Worensky
Roman Yossi, Morgan
Geeky, Brett Pesci, Connor Garland.
Yeah, he's got a good list. It's a good stable
now. Chris Johnson
tweeted this out uh and here's what judd had to say in light of the obvious severity of the play
i am very disappointed and shocked that the league would allow for such a ruling a phone hearing and
in five games is just laughable and preposterous while the hearing process is prefixed in our cba
that there is no further discipline uh is a reckless and ridiculous position for player safety
this decision results from in further loss of confidence in the disciplinary process for all
players players and fans deserve better this is a great line the player safety department should
be suspended which i love and i don't think he's joking no he's not he's holding the job hostage
a great man once called it a kangaroo court a great man continues to he's been there nine years
doing a shitty job for all nine and i i just know behind the scenes they're looking at this
criticism and going the canadian media huh and they're grumpy about this and they're having their
little i'm right back padding sessions i would love to see the group chat with peros and getz
laugh making a decision about the ducks by the way um about you know it's toronto it's toronto
it's toronto toronto what you said on that podcast recently was right ryan and toronto toronto
toronto and they'll calm down and then we will and then nothing will change
like i'm so optimistic about where the talent is in the nhl i am so what reason is there for
me to be hopeful about any of this garbage let me keep going with this story i'd love to be optimistic
hey if your team isn't dominating on the ice why don't you dominate the road yeah yeah yeah
toyota tacoma you know listen the i-force standard i-force engine so it comes in all the toyota
tacomas boasts an impressive towing capacity of 6400 pounds that's so many pounds think about
how many steve dangles name things you could tow with all that uh like three or four camels
okay how many hold on how much do camels weigh how like well a camel that has been fixed okay
oh my god so you could so camels fully grown are a thousand kilograms so a thousand kg into pounds
oh it's about three that's about three that's not bad hey you could tow three straight yeah you
could sam steve worked at the zoo wow i think zoo guy nobody's ever heard zoo guy you know a thing
or two about camels sure do and you don't want to back into a camel which is why panoramic
multi-terrain view monitors give you live updates around your car under the floor so you can
navigate the toughest terrain and when it's time to load up with those camels remember they got the

um uh so we have uh on a on an unrelated hit keifer sherwood talked about charlie mcavoy's
hit on him and he said if anyone could attest to being physical humbly i know obviously and you
know what you're aiming for there's a difference between hitting to be physical physical and
hitting to hurt and i don't think any of my hits last year were ever to the head and he was talking
about uh mcavoy hitting him with seconds left in the sharks 4-2 win over the bruins last week now
the major one to step up and speak is connor mcdavid yes and i'm gonna let him speak we got
the clip but i want you to imagine for a second you know the nhl for things to change the stars
do need to speak up and you know you could saw you see it in the nba with like chris paul and
lebron james going when during the cba negotiations to the owners and looking in the eye and going
we're not gonna do this we're gonna do that yeah and when your star players do that it makes a big
difference and in 2012 the nhl sent chris campoli it's not a league man so here's connor mcdavid's
comments on the hit um yeah you know what i think i think the the player safety has um
done their best um it's not an easy thing to do um you know with that being said i think that
there is reason to take a look at how the whole process works you know if if every time there's
this every time there's a suspension everybody complains about it well why don't we why don't
we take a look at the process and and figure out if there's a better way to uh to make sure that
both parties are happy because uh you know it seems like there's a lot of frustration there
as well the owners the gms they're in it too well you can't suspend our player for too much so
they've i can't speak to that i can't speak to that i'm not uh i'm not an owner i'm not a gm i'm
i'm i'm i'm a player and i can say that uh from the players player perspective i think every time
there is a suspension most times there's a suspension there is a lot of frustration from
the player side so why don't we take a look at the process and figure out a way that works for
uh works for everybody i i take issue with some of that with what what connor said oh no because
it isn't hard he said they have a hard job this is not a hard job i'm not yeah i gotta be honest
i'm just not convinced they do so i i yeah it i there's a lot of pressure but i'm just not
convinced he does a lot of work well a hard a hard job is uh i'll tell you the hard job i had uh
building pools that's a hard job nurses that's a hard fucking job basically when i was outside in
35 degree uh heat and it was 100 humidity and you know and i'm laying down fucking rebar and
then pouring concrete that fucking sucks from what i was a hard job from what i was told george
goes to hockey games that he doesn't watch and text people well this is like so genuine let me
ask you this honestly sure genuinely so the job is you got to know the rules so you got to study
up on the rules okay you got to know um the the game so you watch the game great and after the
day after a controversial hit you get into a room and i think there's something like is it is it 10
to 15 staff on nhl player safety it's it's a lot more than one and and what has made it hard what
makes this hard is when you don't have a standard to keep to every time nhl player safety has to
make a decision they have to start with um and on the first day light and dark were separated to
create night and day because they don't believe because they don't want to be held to in the nhl
this is an nhl policy don't make us hold to a precedent if we held to a precedent that means
you could hold us responsible right and we don't want to be held responsible we just want to do us
and precedent by the way just so everybody knows an earlier event or action that is regarded as
an example or guide to be consider considered in subsequent similar circumstances if we knew
headshot equals knee shot equals then nobody is going to be upset when hey if a knee if a if a
knee on knee results in a five game suspension every time that's the nhl policy well if somebody
gets six games because it's particularly egregious i don't think people are gonna be upset by that
no but we don't know what the precedent is and let me tell you something that ain't it and there is
none and so let me ask what is what exactly is hard about sitting in a room reviewing nhl footage
and having an opinion it's literally a podcast i i that's literally what these people do it is not
harder than the job most people listening to the show right now do and they're doing it for fun
and yeah they're just doing it because they love it for the love of the game george is probably
making a lot more money than most of the people watching and listening to this show right now i'm
i'm not i'm just not convinced it's a difficult job jesse like maybe i'm being stubborn on this
uh he has lots of support he's well paid he has tons of resources what am i missing
i liked how brendan shanahan run that ran the department of player safety and i think he gave
a really good example of what it can be and i think george paris has fallen short of that and
now that we have a bar for it there's no reason that the next guy after shanahan which was kentel
shouldn't have raised the bar each time because that's what you should do as things go on you
should get better at things and peros after that should have raised the bar from there
and since shanahan has been in that position it seems like we've only gone backwards my favorite
moment with brendan shanahan as the head of the department of player safety i want to say he
suspended someone on the new york rangers and someone brought a sign to the game that said
fire shanahan and shanahan happened to be at the game and he took a picture
with the fan that's and like posted it to his own socials i'll find it maybe you can put it
and he's a ranger it's a former ranger he is a former ranger that's fine your question i don't
know if it's a difficult job or not but i know that the job that peros is doing isn't of as much
quality as his predecessor it shouldn't matter if it's a hard job or not right he is worse than what
came before him so i i don't know whether it's difficult to do but i know that this individual
isn't doing a good job because i know what a good job looks like yeah i don't it to me it's
relevant if it's hard or not it's just if it's easy he's not doing a good job if it's hard he's
not doing a good job well and the point that reporter brought up uh to mcdavid about owners
not wanting their players suspended i've never understood why the opinions of the owners uh who
employ the offending player matter and the opinions of the owner of the hurt player don't
what's going on we don't want this guy to miss time okay but this one is though and like way more
you could have suspended gutas 15 games it would have been the longest suspension in god knows how
many years and he would still miss fewer games than austin i agree with you what are we doing
i agree with you so when i lose my mind like i did last week um saying things that i think
are relatively standard in hockey and the players on the ice say that kind of shit all the time
um i i take a minute and i take a deep breath and i go okay calm down you've had some time to
cool down what's the solution here because the answer is not just shut up and eat your slop
i have something i have an idea go for it so um i think the nhl's got a problem
when you have former nhl players running it and and you know especially because humans are biased
generally like i liked brian burke talked about running it because he was the nhl player safety
head for a while yeah he talked about it in his book and he's like it's a tough job because
everybody hates you burkey suspended guys more yeah and and i think that is part of the job is
people are going to not like the decisions that you make and hey you're probably paid consummate
to the level of stress and public pressure that you're under.
I think there's a reason why George Peros isn't selling T-shirts anymore.
It's because the NHL player safety job plays pretty well, pays pretty well.
I don't know what it pays, but I know that whatever stresses he goes through in that
job along with his staff are probably well compensated when it comes to his bank account.
And rightly or wrongly, let me point out the problem.
This is going to wreck my argument, but I'm just going to, I'm going to state some facts
for you.
Okay.
It's going to wreck my argument.
People are not going to take me seriously.
And yet all these things are true.
Peros and Getzlaff played over 1,500 games combined for the Ducks,
and they both won a cup there together.
Yep.
Peros's career was ended by a Toronto Maple Leaf.
Yep.
If you want to tell me that those life experiences,
winning a cup, playing that many games,
having your career ended in a particular city
against a particular fighter,
don't impact your life aren't life experiences that you take with you everywhere and inform
your choices i'm sorry i will not buy that no and no what i think my and here's my and shani
did a great job shani did do a great job that's no question about it but what i think you need
running the department are rules nerds you need people and you know that these people exist that
are like you know and we and we have them tweeting at us all the time when we get a rule wrong
actually it's rule five six seven blah blah blah point three and you're like wow you've actually
read the entire rule book and remember it because it's dry reading let me tell you yeah okay and i
respect that i am saying that you need rules nerds running it and you need nhl players or former nhl
players involved in it but not that's what i'm making the final decision i i think you nailed
it i i do think professional hockey players need to be involved absolutely they they understand
the speed of the game and everything but yeah i i don't i don't think they have the capacity to do
a good and fair job and you know who should be running it who or who should be involved in it
not the goons getzlaff makes sense to me ray he was a tough motherfucker he was really tough yes
but he was also a great player who had players take runs at him yeah george peros was a goon
who is never suspended he's pro goon he's yes he is we we we just lost one of the leagues well
one of toronto's bigger stars i know his play has fallen off a little bit this year i think that has
more to do with systems than anything this is a gold medal captain yep if you don't want to make
it about toronto let's make it about team usa this is the gold medal captain who led the team
in scoring until the final game the single season uh goal record of the cap era right this is in
elite player in this league and it's radco gudas what are we i don't know i feel like i'm talking
in circles the check team now this job i think needs to be as i said rules nerds make the final
decision but you need input from players and you need input from players who were there because
they were good enough to play there yep let's just call it what it is was george peros there
because he was a net positive five on five no no i saw him score a breakaway goal yeah that's great
and I know he went to Harvard.
That doesn't make you smart,
by the way.
Or Princeton.
Lots of dumbasses
go to schools like that.
I spoke to a former NHL player.
I was like, yeah, listen,
I know his reputation
is he's smart and blah, blah, blah.
And he goes, sorry,
who told you George Peros is smart?
This is a former NHL player.
This is a peer of George Peros.
Just because you went to Princeton
doesn't mean you're smart applicably.
You can maybe consume
information differently.
I'm sorry.
I just don't buy that.
And I don't buy, guys,
that this can't be done better.
i know the job's got headaches i know it's got financial pressures from owners and blah blah
blah everyone has that uh but everyone has that i don't care but until there is an actual process
that people and fans can measure it against and a precedent not precedence precedent with a t
this job will continue to be done poorly and and i want to talk about the leafs role in this guys
because i think the leafs have a role to play what the leafs exercise publicly with soft power
you know when when um when you kind of throw that out there and go we don't normally do this but
here it is and there are repercussions for doing that sure yeah yeah gary betman's gonna be mad at
them oh next time the leafs do anything tack on another game behind the scenes we've heard that
they lobbied pretty damn hard for this to be a longer suspension and once again came up empty
handed they lobbied hard for spezza uh and a few other suspensions that have happened to the leafs
and nh shanahan was originally brought into the leafs front office out of player safety because
uh the ownership group at the time thought okay we bring him in he knows how the levers work in
head office and that can help our team get a competitive advantage where possible what did
we see we saw every year 18 back-to-backs in the schedule we saw suspensions that were a little
bit nuts in certain cases let's call it what it is hey you're the long suspension guy here you go
goofball and they just hammered his players for a decade leaf owners brought in shanahan so he
could do that work and it didn't work they don't want to make public statements they tend to want
to remain quiet i don't hear ed rogers talk ever no ever and and if the leafs let me i guarantee
you this if the Leafs had Michael Landauer as an owner oh you would have lost his mind can you
imagine what today would look like they'd have to put a spit guard in that mic yeah oh yeah he'd be
losing it my question for Leafs upper management and ownership is at what point are you going to
start acting your wage you make how much money for this league and they continue to look at you
and go how about we just spit in your face how else can an owner look at it do you think jeremy
jacobs owner of the boston ruins would let this go he would get up and from everything i've heard
about him he would get up and physically try to assault like he he would try to start a fist
fight with anyone who told him the fo do you think carolina hurricanes owner tom dundon lets this go
i don't get the impression he would no do you think danny works owner of the chicago blackhawks
lets this go i don't get the impression he would do you think that james holy shit i can't believe
he just said that dolan lets this go i uh know for a fact based on experience um reading his
fine work uh on the team's social account that he wouldn't so my question to the toronto maple
leafs is what is it going to take for you to get in there and advocate for your guys and you know
what you don't want to advocate for the human being because that's too much political pressure
for you let me let me throw it throw it at you in terms you're going to understand when austin
matthews gets injured he comes back let's say he's 80 of his his former self and he's never the same
again even 99 is unacceptable you've lost money yeah your franchise is worth less this is an asset
and somebody damaged your asset get in there and fight for your own books if you won't fight for
the people fight for the value of the franchise and this is why i was talking about the game on
april 30th because like i just don't know where else to turn this this team is not going to do
what you just mentioned i know they're not going to do they're not that's just not who they are
march 30th what did i say april oh yeah no they won't be playing yeah sorry i don't think there's
gonna be a game that day yeah there will be games that day so yeah for sure no uh talked about the
game on april steven march it's okay talked about the game on march 30th yeah um i just don't know
where else to go with that like if the ownership is not going to do anything if management is not
going to do anything if the players are not going to do anything which they didn't do in the moment
and the department of player safety isn't going to do anything
well i'm sorry what but connor mcdavid is doing something judd moldaver is doing something the
leafs did do something which is very anti them and i'm excited to see
uh what comes of that it's just listen i optimism is precious you know and i like to treat it with
respect i have optimism in the talent of this league because the talent in this league has
given me endless reasons to be optimistic about it what other than blind faith reason do i have
to believe that the nhl is interested in solving any of the nhl's problems so it's interesting you
say that mentioned earlier this week that or the show guys that that it's the palm springs gm
meetings lebron's down there apparently it's going to be an item and this might actually be
a moment where maybe he doesn't get fired but george peros will be under the gun
and the way it's run will be under the gun i think this is going to be a topic of conversation
and i don't know where that goes and jesse i don't know if you've got any faith in that
but i think the fact that that would even make the list is a step in the right direction progress
is slow jesse what do you think the the part i wanted to weigh in on was the leafs part of it
in their reaction to it because jonah siegel wrote an article this morning in the athletic
about brendan shanahan and him his 10 years the least 10 year post brendan shanahan it's weird
how much he's been talking about this episode but they've kind of been a tad directionless
And they don't have the same type of leadership at the top.
And that's kind of what they need for this next era of Leafs hockey.
Because when Tim Laiweke first came in, that's what they were at that time.
And he was able to usher in 10 years of success by getting everything organized and then bringing in somebody to then hand it off to and run the Leafs for the next 10 years.
And for all his faults, and we know how it ended, we don't need to do that all again.
there was at least somebody at the top who pointed the least into a certain direction
and you knew what the least were and who was going to answer for things and he hired people
and he he didn't just aimlessly stand at the top overlooking six holy shitting teams on his own
yeah and it seemed like he had a blank check to run mlsc the way he wanted by hiring smart people
around him and below him so that they could run the team. And what we always heard about
when he left the team was that it was a bloated organization that MLSC was because they had so
many people in the hockey department from like the people who made the meals for the team to the
training staff to the analytics department. They were spending like crazy. And Keith Pelley came
in and he cut all that back. But the thing about the Toronto Maple Leafs is they're the richest
franchise in the sport, and they have the money and the resources, and they should be a bloated
organization. But are they driving shareholder value? So Keith Pelley comes in and they cut
everything. So a lot of people lost their jobs once Rogers made the commitment to take over 100%
of MLSC. And they cut what was, I think now we all realize, a very important position,
which is the president position so you look at the reaction from mlse to austin matthews being
suspended four or five games and the lack of somebody at the top you could point to to be
outraged keith pelly's not going to be that guy not ed rogers as you said adam is not that person
and we're looking for okay we get the statement from the leaf's social account and across their
social medias where's the guy who's going to be outraged and then the guy to point the Leafs
in the right direction so this never happens again where the team on the ice does not have
the reaction for the captain and two the NHL doesn't do a little head tap to the richest team
in the sport that's driving the most revenue for everybody else we're being bullied on several
different fronts here as the Leafs organization one by their peers the other 31 owners and then
the guy in charge Bettman and then the guy who Bettman employs in George Peros and then by the
other players on the ice because they can push your team around because they know there's not
going to be a pushback and for me looking at the team it's so disheartening that Keith Pelley's
there he's not going to fix shit no Brad might not be there I don't have any faith in Brad
you're living to fix anything no he's shown me enough evidence that i don't have faith in him
and then they've left this position blank where you need somebody to run your team so i'm left
here just sitting that looking at the sky being like where where are we going here when do you
seem when do you turn your weight around let's let's go here and make some decisions and point
us in a direction can i also point out how pathetic it is that the leafs doing what most
teams do every day which is literally just saying hey this player's hurt like that's a
demonstration of soft power and in leafs context it is good god gag me with a spoon i know i know
it's it's it's no wonder it's so easy to make fun of the leafs like no wonder like people just dunk
on the they make it so easy and by and the reason they do that is because it's a control thing
well we can control it and they think that they can control it and they can't they can't the
Beliefs try to control things that are uncontrollable.
You know what you can control?
Your reaction.
You can't control what people are going to say.
You can control how you react to it.
And are you going to passively react?
Are you going to actively go at a real legitimate?
This isn't bitching about bad reffing in a playoff game.
This is your number one player, and I would argue,
the most skilled, talented, best player that has ever put the sweater on.
Ever.
and you're not gonna call you're not gonna call gary and say gary no i'm not coming to new york
you're coming here and you're gonna explain it to me otherwise we're going public well
let's talk about rogers and their relationship with the leafs when i was there they were like
don't go too heavy on the leafs because we don't well we're worried about the perception as in like
being a too toronto-centric network yeah they which everyone watching is laughing at right now
for different reasons everyone outside of ontario is like that's a joke you guys talk about the
leafs all the time and everyone in ontario is going to be like yeah they talk about the leafs
all the time uh and how bad they are and how other organizations are better and every leafs game
is full of features about guys on the other team from like st louis like a third liner on the kings
to figure what are we doing yeah it's a live broadcast for god's sake who are you appeasing
all the canadian kings fans go watch a jay's broadcast and how first rate that is same network
yes first rate you wouldn't catch it oh yeah they're gonna do a uh they're gonna do uh oh
this guy's coming in relief let's do a 30 second promo on this guy for the salos cardinals now the
jays are also on an island they're the only mlb sure but the treatment of the two teams is
completely different and i think they take that mindset to the nhl they don't want to whine too
much because anytime you see brad treliving or whatever come up on your phone if you're a league
official i already know they're rolling their eyes but it can't be hate but it can't be a
general manager that does that no no it's gotta be somebody above keith or maybe even ownership
and i know they're already rolling their eyes they hate this they hate this team they hate this
place they hate this fan base they resent us we're a burden to them which is
pretty disheartening to feel as one of the top customers not many fan bases spend more money
time and passion on your product and we're a burden to you gary's never here gary's never
here when have you seen gary betman in toronto outside of hall of fame gary george bill daily
here anyone no but the league is rigged in favor of a team that hasn't won since prior to the moon
landing no your uncle's right i think he nailed it i think i think to kind of wrap this up the
toronto maple leafs need to take a page out of michael anlauer's book for all his warts and i
thought you know the lenis olmark situation i still think was an unforced error and it put
lenis in a position where he had to then go on tsn and explain it which i think was wrong yeah but
that's different but michael anlauer understood that hey i bought this team i thought i had this
first round pick i paid for that first round pick and now you're taking it away from me the
fucking hell you are he whined and complained and held his breath and stomped his feet and guess
what it worked it worked and it was a legitimate conversation but it had to be michael anlauer
that did it i don't even think it could be michael anlauer's president that did it it needed to be
mike if they could because he's the owner if they could retract all seven canadian teams i think
they would i really do let's talk about starting a business and all of the moments that are actually
really important and in the moment you don't realize it and afterwards you're looking back
you're going wow that was a seminal moment in this company and i had no idea that it would be
indeed uh and i we always bring this up uh jesse going to steve and i hey i built us a website and
then he ran us through the website i did not realize at the time how important that would be
and you know we were doing we were doing like rinky-dink t-shirts back then because we didn't
know any better and jesse built a store yeah putting our shop on shopify allowed us to connect
with different brands to make our merch we didn't have the ability to on our other platforms and
with the connections that spotify has in the back end when you build a site on shopify we're able
the upgrade the things we give out to the fans so it's good and the thing is is starting something
new isn't terrifying because jesse uh you first off jesse you always say this you're like well i
figured it out i'm like well that doesn't mean that i could but with shopify they actually do
make it easy yeah yeah no i'm a big dummy and if i can do it you can do it i think you're being
harsh on yourself sir yeah steve start start making that site yeah you'll see how easy it
truly is we'll see now the dangle feet.com it's tight oh man it's time to turn those what ifs and

First off, Kevin Kurz, I don't know if everybody knows this,
and Puckpedia put this out.
Kevin Kurz was tweeting about the Leafs pick that they sent to Philadelphia.
And Puckpedia put out a flowchart, which is hilarious.
I've got it highlighted there, Jesse.
But here's, after the draft lottery, they've got a flowchart of,
is it a top five pick or is it not?
Right.
Because we need to know, when will the Leafs draft and when will they not?
This is complicated.
If it is not a top five pick,
Boston will get the Leafs 2026 pick.
Is it,
is the Toronto Maple Leafs pick in the top 10 for 2027?
No.
Philly gets it.
Yes.
Then Philly will get it unprotected in 2028.
Ooh.
Okay.
If,
if the Leafs pick is in the top five and they keep their 2026 pick,
well,
then the question is,
is the Leafs top,
is the Leafs 2027 pick in the top 10?
No.
Well,
then flyers get the 2027 pick and boston gets the 2028 pick unprotected if the answer is yes and
they are in the top 10 in 2027 in the draft toronto then chooses option one where boston
or toronto gets the 2027 pick philadelphia or toronto gets the 2028 pick and then the option
two is philadelphia gets toronto's 2027 pick boston gets toronto's 2028 pick it's very complicated
let me ask the only question that matters because it came out i think it was elliot
friedman put this out there uh that the scott lot and trade to the kings happened 30 seconds
before the trade deadline so you see how convoluted all of this is the brandon carlo trade happened
minutes before the trade deadline what are the odds uh what are the odds that when they made
the trade leafs management knew this information i don't know do you think they knew all that i
don't i don't nope i don't think they knew that they're a chicken running around with their head
cut off jesse let me ask you a question can we bring up the shift charts for the last couple
of games bought buffalo and uh um buffalo and minnesota because the leafs did win yep oh grew
part of the grew crew bow friggin grew turns out you should use players from the Marley's uh he
had over 50 points with the Marley's this year and the Leafs were like no we'll never call him up
third in the American League in scoring and he's got three goals scoring three goals in four games
two last night and they've been rock star goals like last last night one of them was like a tip
but the other one was a absolute laser beam you know what the tip was off the bar though
so shorty tip and a laser beam it's awesome rock star that's that's great shit and he got the belt
from michael posetta last night who was a healthy scratch yeah they healthy posetta for some dumb
reason i don't understand it uh yeah we need to we need to see cali yarn croak we have to
that guy's got berube in a trance do you want i don't know chart or just how much they played
how much ice time so i want to know what bo grew played in buffalo and i want to know what bo grew
played in Minnesota?
So we can start with Minnesota.
Bo Gru, if we go there
and we see Benoit Olivier.
Olivier.
Olivier.
Olivier.
Benoit Olivier.
There we go.
Two goals, two points,
plus two, 17-03.
Okay, now what did he play in,
before anybody comments,
what did he play in Buffalo?
It felt like more.
I'm going to say 18.
18-20.
Believe the answer is closer to 19,
but let's have a look.
hot diggity dog um 1908 wow yeah guys there it is did scott lodden ever get over 12 minutes
no no no i don't think damn that's such a good point no like no disrespect to bo grew i'm happy
he's here but this is why craig berube has got to go i mean are you fucking kidding me guys i know
you traded a first round pick and a prospect for a guy that this guy won't play more than 12 minutes
fire the coach in december brad yeah fire him and i know they had nick waugh you know what nick waugh
plays in in colorado wing yep yep adam nick waugh bobby mcmahon scott lawton each scored in their
first game bobby mcmahon had five points in a game points three goals here's one that i found
for the lfr video yesterday now that you're all fired up and excited he has as many power play
goals in two games with the Kraken as he had all season with the Leafs because he's on power play
unit two when power play unit wasn't one wasn't working what would they do did they hold guys
accountable and switch them up no they said let's throw you back out there for the eighth year in a
row it was up to like Max Domi and Bobby McMahon to make the most of their 25 seconds Nick Robertson
too let's Nick Robertson too what the fuck man I know these guys have got to go I know and I don't
care what craig berube said to get those guys going in the anaheim game i'm sure it was a great
speech craig you ain't in for this team and i love that bogru is playing this much he should
you know why he is because craig doesn't have a fucking choice hey there are no centers left you
want me to give you uh uh some good news yeah good news okay i am a big player i'm six foot two i'm
over 200 pounds oh wow you're a big boy i'm uh good at what i do i'm a good player oh you're
good i'm good now i'm interested i can score goals damn i make eight hundred and twelve thousand
five hundred dollars against the cap that sounds like great value and somebody that i would love
to investigate do you want to sign me in free agency yeah well i got great news you don't have
to because bo grew is signed through next year hell yeah brother hell yeah i remember mentioning
his name near the beginning of the season when Domi was playing center and shouldn't have been
ever now I understand because no one's left but uh that nice Domi Cowan line is a big bunch of
fucking nothing eh it's holy shit sometimes fun mostly nothing but why are we putting Cowan with
that uh there are no other players Bo Gru exists no Bo Gru does exist that's true and he seems to
be doing okay for himself i apologize um now i don't remember bo grew beginning of the season
you mentioned oh yes they had domi playing center which he should have never done because he isn't
a center he's not david campf uh they could have used him with scott lott note um he didn't want
to play for the least but he did want to play in the nhl so they found something that was in
between and sent them to the Canucks and I was like why did you sign Bo Gru then not really
knowing anything about Bo Gru like I'll be honest like it's not like I was championing this guy
you know who was championing him Brad Treleving signing him to a two-year contract this guy's
played heading into the season 65 I think career NHL games has one goal on an empty net and four
assists and you signed him to a multi-year deal who the hell is his agent i want to know what
agent was able to get that player with that production two years the leafs gave him two
years and it didn't use him until past game 60 that doesn't make any sense whatsoever
that's such a disconnect in the organization like i should what this conversation should
maybe be about is hey they have this player look at him doing well isn't that fun it is
oh it's awesome but this season is beyond salvaging right now and i don't think it
had to be this way it didn't this is a better team this is a better team i'm sorry they're
not a bottom dweller they're not a basement dweller bottom feeders is what i meant i don't
know if they're great certainly not anymore they're not a contender maybe they don't make
the playoffs they should be in the hunt for god's sake yeah they've had injuries and what everyone's
had injuries i understand but they didn't use this lineup optimally and i mean the proof is in the
pudding bo grew is that's an excellent hockey player yes and an nhl player nhl player ought
to be on the team next year probably out of camp uh the way this is going he's great what's hey
you could even bring scott lotten back but you can't do it if berube is here no no he's a non
option to bring back and i think the next guy that needs to come up because i saw it yesterday
justin bourne did such an awesome job i gotta shout him out at at first intermission now of
course they come out and they score three goals at the beginning of the second but hilarious uh
He was like showing Philip Myers and Simone Benoit.
It's like, here's an open passing lane,
and here's how they iced it.
And they're just, they can't be,
you can have one of them in the lineup.
You can't have both.
It's not playing together.
I don't understand that at all.
Well, OEL left the team for personal reasons.
So that's the only reason, I guess.
Is that the only reason?
Or do we just call up William Villeneuve and have a look?
we should there's another marley having an excellent season who's just trapped myers is
is is uh malt is scratched all the time stetcher has started to get scratched yeah you need a puck
mover back there have a look they called up henry thrun didn't use him just look man you're telling
me unequivocally guys and and jesse maybe you can tell me because you're at the game more and
henry friend has played for the leafs has a couple games you're telling me that it's guaranteed
your chances of winning are better with Meyers in the lineup over Thrun Meyers in the lineup
over Villeneuve you're telling me you're guaranteeing me that let me give you this
uh Will Villeneuve is having a great season on the Marlies but is also a restricted free agent
before you head into that conversation shouldn't you see don't you want to know don't you want to
know what you got maybe he's TJ Brennan and he's a he's an AHL all-star not defensive enough to
hacking the nhl those guys exist those guys absolutely exist but we found out didn't we
yes we saw yes sometimes you gotta know brian burke i want to say did that with justin pogey
yeah remember oh let's just see and then he put him in and oh wow was he terrible we traded the
wrong guy goodness gracious whoops um no this is this is the time of year dude injuries and
freaking illnesses and personal stuff and also you just sort of aren't contending for anything
call guys up call guys up you have no problem healthy scratching like heart and soul guys
like steven lorenz so what are we doing i give some guys a chance jesse were you surprised by
the lorenz scratching because i i kind of was i didn't think he played bad i thought he he's been
killing penalties well like what else is he supposed to do no but he's a guy who i feel
Craig Brube is okay with
putting in and out of the lineup to get
other guys some minutes. He's a soldier.
He's never been...
Steven Lawrence has got to be in there 82 times
in a year. So I feel like
that's just kind of the position he's in.
The Henry Thrun thing is interesting because
you can see that Bradshaw Living only
called him up because his hand was forced
with the OEL situation. It's like
okay, OEL's got to go do daddy duty
and see the birth of his child
so we got to call up Thrun, but
we don't actually want to play him because they didn't thrones another pending uh free agent yeah
but like okay now that you've been forced in this situation you might as well see right and their
refusal to do that all season long is a large reason why they're in this position like how
about this like i'm heading into a summer where i gotta negotiate a deal uh i need to be playing
games yeah i gotta be playing games i'd rather than be in the nhl than the ahl but uh i you know
i know i make more on this call up in the nhl actually no i think he just gets his money
in the ahl the best thing for all these players is to be playing games whether it's in the ahl
nhl man calling a guy up now maybe the weather had something to do with that i know it was messed up
in minnesota i don't know um but i i was so disheartened when they came out of the trade
deadline with the exact same decor like it's interesting that they're playing better now
they got embarrassed into it i love the effort i'm seeing every single night from nick robertson
like we're evaluating what you got to do with the rest of the season as a player is prove that you
belong in the nhl and prove that you're a player worth keeping like nick robertson i have no
interest in training that player well he wants out though probably well right well too bad damn
you're an rfa so whoops yeah um like i like what dakota joshua is doing but like with the young
guys matias baccelli i still he's an rfa sure is you know i think you should keep scoring and then
they can trade him but i'm not sure i am not he's got great chemistry with willie and that's cool
but where was that in october i don't disagree with that man i don't disagree with that at all
i just i want to give me give me a reason to watch give me a reason to watch these games like
bo grew is uh friggin oasis in the desert oh thank god and he's got an interesting name
then i could do bits with it and he's scoring goals and he's got lore ah this is incredible
It's way better than just watching, like, you know, 14 games left.
You're just staring at your watch and running at the clock.
Yeah.
Like, I want to learn some things.
Yep.
Jesse, I was going to do a segment on the Leafs goalies,
but we're running out of time here, so I'll save it for tomorrow.
Do you have anything left on the Leafs?
Because there's a couple of things I want to get.
No, I think there's a lot of NHL stuff we haven't gotten to yet.
Perfect.
And that's why we're doing back-to-back shows,
so we have lots to get to.
But let's start in Edmonton.
conor ingram is now the official starting goalie for the edmonton oilers and they picked him up
for next to nothing yep uh edmonton the turn on tristan jari has been jarring i've been insane
i saw something i've never seen in my entire life last night and i don't remember who it was
uh tristan jari was out there for warm-up i saw this you saw this yeah he was out there for warm-up
he's not the starting goalie and people were criticizing his warm-up as the backup goaltender
you think it's hard to play here in edmonton they're like look at this guy he's not playing
tonight no put some effort in now in fairness he was just putting around out there i think
i do like listen he makes millions of dollars and it's his job i do feel bad for people who
seem to genuinely be going through a hard time tristan jarry's going through a hard time um
i don't think he's well liked um and he's performing like shit when that's a really
hard place to be when stoffer says there was a fight at practice there was a fight at practice
you can trust what he says and then you imagine what was said or like like what was it stop the
puck i don't think like we've seen leon dry saddle be grouchy imagine leon dry saddle with not a
camera around when he's got an issue with you how about when there are cameras around what was that
clip from why are you so pissy what was that clip from last year or two years ago where i think it
was miko ranton and just screams at uh alexander georgia of like i'll fucking kill you remember
that yes i do i do that was during an nhl game were they on the same team steve they sure were
you never see that ever that's crazy imagine what they say to the other team
um but at the end of the day uh next game is tomorrow or whatever that let's play the guy
who stops pucks and you can only control what you can control and your effort is something you can
control and he didn't give an effort in that warm-up and that's why he was getting ripped on
for it i know it seems silly but jesse is a former general manager uh i want to ask you
how does stan bowman survive the tristan jari trade the winning if they win like he also got
ingram right yeah if if that works out then it's okay who cares we won so that's the only way this
thing looks good but even even if they do win the trade is still a bad trade i don't think anybody
can divorce themselves from that situation but if you win you forget about it and it's fine because
who cares in the end this was chris knobloch's comments here about ingram starting we can play
them here because i think they're pretty good you know i think there's a wonderful goaltender
and we're going to need them down the stretch um we can't run ingram every single game as well as
we like how he's playing right now we're going to need both our goalies and we'll need him to
be at his best but fair to say given i mean it needs to be a bit of a meritocracy here like
connor ingram will be viewed and treated as the starting goalie and get the starts that a starting
goaltender would get and as opposed to a 1a 1b scenario here like you're gonna have to ride
ingram here right now we are going to be playing the best goalie and the um who's giving us his
best chance of winning each night so you won't need jerry um we don't have we've got i believe
one back-to-back later in april so it's not that our goaltender can't be playing all these games i
think it's a heavy workload to be giving connor all those games but um yeah right now connor is
our starting goalie he will get in the majority of the uh starts as of now until something changes
all you had to do is lead with that you're you're fighting him to just say it like i know you're the
head coach and you can't skewer the other guy right you can't just come out and be like okay
jari's ass and we gotta play ingram but that's that's what he's saying but you gotta you gotta
at least give a vote of confidence fully to ingram at the beginning just say yeah he's playing better
and we can all see that and jari right now is unacceptable and that we got we know who we're
going with and this is what we're doing like okay fact stan bowman made the connor ingram trade
which was i'm just looking future considerations yeah very good good for him nothing fact stan
bowman made the tristan jari trade which is a absolute catastrophe fact one of the things i
brought up uh maybe last week or the week before is the oilers should just call up calvin pickard
they can't do that yeah because of the salary cap oh and Stan Bowman the general manager put
them in that position oh I so here's what I was going to say maybe this this plays into this
conversation I thought the playoff lineup would look like well Jari's going to sit and you put
Pickard in because you need a playoff compliant lineup I don't like I'm sorry a cap compliant
lineup in the playoffs and you're and and CJ has said this on his show you're going to see a lot
of third goalies come in
and dress so they can get more
money on the actual ice. Oh yeah
because so Pickard's going to be dressing and Jari's
going to be sitting and they'll be
better for it.
They'll be able to dress more
in the lineup and literally have
better goaltending.
So but the
Oilers still have to worry about getting in like
that's how bad it's gone. I
listen, I think they're I think they're going to make
it and I still think the reason he can say that confidently
Steve is because he knows that division sucks ass
who's coming for them okay well we're at that weird time of year where it's there's like almost
a month of nhl hockey remaining what happens if ingram gets hurt what happens okay but that's not
that's not the reality no not the reality no so yeah what happens we'll deal with it when it
happens calvin picker comes up we play him that's what happens which is crazy yeah i think there's
a really good argument that if the Oilers well when the Oilers get into the playoffs
and they make some noise like barring a cup you don't fire your GM after winning the cup
but there's a real argument that if they don't get back to the Stanley Cup final you just fire
them anyway you you ruin the goaltending situation you completely mismanaged it counterpoint so did
ken holland and they went all the way to the finals man this mcdavid guy must be pretty good
he's a pretty damn good hockey player you know like um it i don't know it's this this feels
the last few years we've seen them go on these pre-playoff runs and it just doesn't feel like
something they're capable of right now i guess we'll see to steve's point about like what if
guys get injured leon drysaddle did leave the game against the predators with an injury
i know knoblock said that the training staff did give him the opportunity if he could like get
through and grit through it to go out there and try again during that game but i think they
ultimately made the decision to sit out so there is optimism that like this isn't a long-term thing
but that's good dry saddle being injured down the stretch isn't good for the edmonton yeah he that
was a bizarre hit too because he was just kind of pushed into the nashville bench yeah it was it was
very awkward and it's definitely a little bit of austin matthews reactionary uh the conversation i
think amongst every nhl player and that we can't look like the leafs because they went after wise
blatt that entire game after he took out dry saddle it was essentially a clean hit but they
did not want to look like the leafs and and they made him pay for it so good good for them sticking
up for each other that's what you should be doing and hopefully dry saddle is all right for the
sake of Oilers fans are you looking something up you want to say on the Oilers no it's okay I was
just I don't need to contextualize how bad Jari's been I think most people know but oh my god like
every time I look it up it's worse he's an 855 two and five Canadians will hear the words you

the 2026 chevrolet trax is the stylish suv for those on the move and with the standard chevy
safety assist package you have the backup to handle every turn with confidence the 2026 tracks
start your build at chevrolet.ca i want to draw your attention to yeah he's bad he's quite bad
i want to draw your attention to two teams that are in for i think the most important week of
their entire season the rest of the i've stuff that i plan for today we'll move it to tomorrow
but this one is important the detroit red wings and the boston bruins i think are on a make or
break course this week this week because look out here come the ottawa senators who are seven one
and two in their last 10 they're not messing around and the cannot effing quit columbus blue
jackets who are five one and four but remember those four points still count that's points in
nine straight or sorry points in nine of ten they've basically lost like three games since
boness took over it's crazy imagine the leafs had fired their coach crazy oh my god imagine um
and so right now
Bruins sitting in wild card one
66 games 80 points
Detroit has fallen since
Larkin I think they had a couple other injuries too
but Larkin being out really hurts them
80 points in 67 games
so that's one more game than the Bruins
and the Jackets and
Senators are both
at 66 games apiece
79 for the Jackets 77
for the Senators and here's the fun part about
this week on Saturday
the Bruins and Red Wings play each other
let me run you through hell yeah so the the red wings and are playing the flames tonight they're
playing the canadians very good team division rival on on thursday very big one boston friday
sorry saturday boston friday or saturday boston's got the back-to-back this week they are playing
the devils okay then tomorrow they are playing the canadians oh then they're gonna play the jets
that's a game they should win ah the jets have been good man they should yeah they should still
bit win oh the jets are like right on the cuffs of like doing some of the playoffs here oh my god
like they could they could really if they keep staying hot they can make a run sell and sell
and win crazy yeah i don't know if they're uh an easy team to beat anymore well okay then they
should beat the devils tonight how's that uh sure you should beat the devils into a pulp because
they're softer than you uh and then and then saturday so the bruins will go into saturday
having played three games the red wings will go into saturday having playing two games
other than the leafs game that night which i always watch i will be watching that game
extraordinarily close i believe that's a huge one red wings are dealing with uh cop is out
larkin's out nygaard's out oh and one more uh gibson wasn't it i'm not sure i forget but pop
larkin uh nygaard and rasmussen rasmussen there you go yeah they they're not healthy but that's
the nhl they they have been in a playoff spot all year long they've done it several years in the last
decade of hockey where they get real close and right down the stretch something goes sideways
and it's going to be painful if it's another one of those years didn't they miss it by a point two
years ago they were tied i believe one year hey they missed it on uh i've taken a lot of shit
from red wings fans this year and rightfully so yeah they've had a great year if they miss the
playoffs yeah do i get to drive to detroit i and throw a parade i'm not doing it okay i'm not
no no but have they given you shit because i've been getting shit oh
just a bit because i've been giving red wing fans shit for like well not fans i really give
the organization shit fans get mad at me for giving the organization shit but it's not the
fans it's the i'm like where what are you guys doing where are you going with this it's it's
been very different it's everything is different fan base to fan base you go man the sabers are
shit uh or have been shit like and and they go we know we know you're not mad enough about how
shit they are and you say the red wings are shit and they go hey fuck you like it's it's just been
odd but like i've already been like all right i was wrong right so i don't now get licensed to
tap dance on their grave if they were to miss
the play. I do you even though
even though I said, even though I said
I was wrong. I was wrong for a bit
when new evidence presents itself. I'm
going to change my mind and and I
said I apologize to Red Wing fans already.
Perhaps I shouldn't have
the
thought has occurred to me, but
I don't get to
last year. I don't get to their good team last
year. The Red Wings missed the playoffs by five points
and then the 24 season
they were tied for the last
wildcard spot with the Washington
Capitals and then missed it on the tiebreaker.
Whoa.
Wow. They've been close and each time
they can't quite get there. There's some
drama there. There's some drama there. Now on the
Western side, the point
spreads a little bit more, but
the LA Kings are
perilously close to missing the playoffs.
The Sharks are a point ahead of them.
The Utah Mammoth have 74 and
wildcard one. Kraken because
of Bobby McMahon just being a dog
We're having five points.
They're now in the second wildcard spot.
The Kraken, by the way, are 4-6-0 in their last 10.
Mammoth, 4-4-2.
San Jose is 5-3-1, and the Kings are 5-4-1.
I know the Kings are missing Armia and Fiala,
so a bit of a handicap there.
But I'm looking at this, and I'm going,
yeah, but Armia and Fiala are not going to fix
a negative 24-goal differential.
That is what it is.
No, the Kings think.
The Kings are bad.
Yeah.
You didn't believe me when I told you
they were going to miss the playoffs.
I know.
I just couldn't I couldn't fathom it.
Shout out Anzai Kopitar in a game.
You got to win.
He breaks the all time record for points as a Los Angeles king in his final season.
Awesome stuff.
He passes Marcel Dion.
That's a guy who deserves that record.
Well, yeah, Marcel, he might be a top 10 player all time.
He's a seventh leading scorer in NHL history.
It's crazy.
That's crazy.
Kopitar is passing him for anything.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's that's wild.
I do want to point out the Kraken, despite being in that second playoff spot, do not
control their destiny because the Sharks have a game in hand.
Could the future be very teal?
Like the near future be teal?
Well, it's technically is the future teal or seafoam?
That's a really good question, right?
Which version of that ocean?
Which shade of bluey green is the present?
Definitely not the Canucks one.
No.
they all have that same freaking color along that coast blue and green that bottom of that west
playoff race has been just and nobody wants it and the jets you're right jesse they're right there
the sharks have yeah the jets have climbed back into this because nobody wants it and like i've
been so a little disappointed of the sharks the last little run because they've had so many
opportunities where they could have really gotten into that playoff spot ahead of the
seattle crack in there like they had a game on friday against st louis at home
you should be winning that game even though the blues are hot yeah i was about to say scroll over
look at the blues yeah one of the hottest teams in the league seven two and one but they're you
know you're you're fighting for this playoff spot you got the blues and then you got saturday night
against the islanders earlier in the month so it's that back-to-back game they lost both of those
oh you know that's that's tough and then buffalo comes in they're a good team you lose to buffalo
and then you get a couple wins sprinkled in there and then over the weekend you face ottawa who's
on the second night of a back-to-back Ottawa's playing the same goaltender they played on
Saturday that they're playing Sunday all Marcos back-to-back games and you beat them a whole
bunch of times and you can't stop the puck and you lose seven four and so I'm a little
disappointed in our teal family over there because I'm rooting for them to get these wins
and they just can't win these games that are definitely winnable on their calendar can I
tell you what was surprising to me about the Sharks at the deadline is they didn't come away
with any defenseman i was a little surprised by that like it's like ferraro orlov and then it
falls off to they got letty lilligren ahead of the deadline i think yeah like what are we doing
that's no they traded lilligren that's oh yeah he's in washington now so they they traded off
it's who klingberg erasure how's he doing this year i have not had a decent season he has he
scored a lot good for him that's great i i'm like no snark that's great that's awesome no uh i do
find it funny that they were like let's get our defense even thinner we must get timothy out of
here yeah a team that could have used the defenseman was like please let's trade lilligren
to another non-playoff team yeah all right yeah yeah and for the sharks i know goaltending has
been a bit of an issue lately you have askeroff who's down with an injury now who hasn't had the
like a stellar season you know nedeljkovic is now backing up and brossois started that game that was
his first game in what are we on now like two and a half years very long which is crazy good for him
amazing comebacks yeah no kidding i'm looking for a win for my sharks and they didn't get it
yeah i know like i i'm great story but at the end of the day i just want to double you apparently
macklin got cheered every time he stepped out for like warm-up in in ottawa in ottawa yeah
like people just love this kid he's like a box office he's incredible for good reason yeah i
think that's neat yeah um can i uh update you guys because it's the we're nearing the end of
the show i would like to update you on the world cup of hockey oh uh because we now know more so
first off the three cities being named for uh where it's going to be going to happen uh calgary
edmonton prague uh there had been some rumors about stockholm but it'll be prague and the
championship game will happen in edmonton um so wait there's going to be games in all three all
three so i'm assuming the euro contingent will be in europe and i think the north american contingent
will be in north america there's only two north american i know it's bizarre and uh ron hainsey
from the nhlpa uh the nhl and nhlp are not yet ready to name the eight participating countries
that's because they want to include russia but they can't say it yet uh ron hainsey did say now
I'm interjecting myself on that.
But why wouldn't you name the countries?
The reason is, is that it's awkward politically to name that you want Russia there.
It is.
And they're hoping by 2028 that that situation has resolved itself.
So it'd be it's four and four, right?
Four and four.
Four teams would be one division plays in Alberta.
Yeah.
The other one's in Czechia.
Sweden, Finland, Czechia.
Who's four?
Adams, Russia.
I think Russia's there.
So I think here's...
And then the other one,
I guess, like Germany?
Slovakia.
Slovakia, Canada, USA?
So yeah, Slovakia, Germany,
Czech, Finland, Sweden, USA,
Canada, and Russia.
Italy.
Definitely Italy.
I need Damian Clara back.
But no, I think you could
make the argument,
is it Slovakia
or is it Switzerland?
Because Switzerland had
a pretty damn good tournament.
I think the...
Latvia.
That'll be determined
on the ice by the ioc rankings right because they play those international tournaments it's an nhl
event though would they say would i allow that like if i'm running this thing i default to like
how they'd rank it because like i know the world baseball classic that's going on right now like
those games they apply to the olympic baseball tournament like it's all in conjunction with
the overall international governing body they should probably stick to that kind of stuff and
have the actual qualifying teams make that thing instead of just gary picking teams that he likes
I think that'd be I'm begging I'm begging the NHL to think bigger with this next time I get
why the first time you keep it small but we saw with the Olympics what 12 teams can be
I think it should be 16 and I want to see teams with no NHLers on it I love that are you kidding
that's exciting I don't know why you wouldn't want that here's the real exciting part I don't
think you can find one sure you can't know that Adam like all these teams had oh you someone from
the i thought you're trying to say like you couldn't find other teams no no you're right
all these teams had someone yeah yeah it's great absolutely i i think uh i think it would be fun
to have france back it'd be fun to have italy back i think you know you have um you know where's
kazakhstan at where you know i i also wonder too you know the the countries the two countries that
are being everybody talks about russia what about belarus belarus is a pretty they used to be a
hockey country yeah so you know and they're right now they're in the you can't play with us zone
because of the political situation but if the nhl is open to bringing them in you know you could
easily do a 16 team tournament and make it fun and you know there would be an upset somebody
would upset someone else it's if i know the nhl they're gonna go small they're gonna be like well
we doubled the amount of teams well wasn't there four nations oh i thought you meant 2016 world
cup i'm like there was pretty but what what seems like is good this year is at very least they got
rid of the young guns team and the sum of europe team and i know the young gun teams was fun but
it was a gimmick it was a gimmick so it was some of europe gimmick give me the country it's a shame
because young guns was such a good idea and some of some of your episode like weird
like what if you could just do all of europe no team europe no it'd be fun they'd be pissed about
that come on i don't want that anyway i know so the rest of it that we're going to do we'll do
it tomorrow there's plenty of things to talk about tomorrow i'd like to get back to that
ottawa senators game that happened on saturday okay the goalie interference talk because tim
struslow was robbed of an amazing goal and the two goalie interference calls that were called
goalie interference and then not goalie interference make zero sense so i have it in
the lineup today i know it'll be it'll be even more old by then but the goalie interference
talk is never old no ongoing issue and we're just getting we're getting even deeper into the
question marks about what it is which is crazy where are the rules yes okay where are they let's
fire the extra we can't i don't have the button for the extra okay all right uh this is so exciting
so we'll see you tomorrow and then we got friday and remember i'm streaming tomorrow night and
friday night's game so we will see you then as well steve will be on saturday lots going on in
the network look out for the cj show the steve dangle podcast follow the guys on twitter at
