Starting point is 00:02:18 it for at sdpn.ca um as we get ready for the playoffs uh what's really really cool is we're going to have different threads on each team so uh you know we have threads on each team so if you're up sorry channels channels fine this isn't reddit i know i'm sorry different channels discussion things just like a thread like you might a thread but not a thread it's not a thread it's a channel within the discord channel anyway you can chat with people from your own team but what they're going to do for the playoffs is they're going to say let's say it's Toronto Boston like Steve wants chaos theory uh you're going to be able to chat with Toronto fans and Boston fans it's all going to be together in the one uh channel section the one thing we will
Starting point is 00:03:04 mention is that we don't uh we don't accept bad shitty language so if you're going to be shitty in terms of like listen we can swear we can be frustrated that sort of thing but if you're going to attack people on our discord channel you'll just be banned and uh they just want to say let's keep it fun because at the end of the day hockey is supposed to be fun the mantra of this company is quite literally sdpn sports are fun so let's make it fun let's make it respectful let's make it enjoyable because you know the one thing that everybody says about twitter and it's unanimous is that it's kind of a hole nobody really likes it there and discord is supposed to be more fun than that at least ours is so we encourage you to sign up uh we want you to come hang out for
Starting point is 00:03:43 playoffs and obviously we would hope that uh you keep it kind of respectful also for people asking i don't know if i'm allowed to reveal this but there will be an nhl bracket challenge uh run by robert and jamie who are our social team um so be on the lookout for that and yes there will be prizes oh yeah oh there's gonna be a prize can i win no you can't i mean you can win That's trash. You're trash. Adam. I want to win.
Starting point is 00:04:12 Yeah, no, you can't win, Jesse. I love you very much. But also Monday at 10 a.m. Agent Provocateur, brand new episode with. Rick Westhead. Oh, yeah. So we're going to talk to Rick a little bit about like, you know, obviously we talk a little bit about, you know, the Kyle Beach story
Starting point is 00:04:32 and where that's at now, but other things, too. like sort of what it takes to be a good journalist. And Rick's got amazing stories and is a great man, like a great person. And oftentimes in journalism, because they're not the story, the writers are not the story. You don't know much about them. Rick's just one of those guys that you'd want to get to know. He's a great person.
Starting point is 00:04:52 And Alan and Rick go back a long way. So we'll be chatting with him on Monday. That episode comes out at 10 a.m. And now that the news and notes are sort of out of the way, Can we throw in the CJ Show thing that we're doing today? Oh, CJ Fan Fridays. Yes, go. Yeah. When I was last at your house on Wednesday, an sdpn package had arrived for you it was one of the gifts that jesse and i got you i haven't
Starting point is 00:06:05 opened it because i figured i knew it i knew it i figured i'd wait till you guys were here again why would i do it now oh yeah yeah that's a very good uh answer that you didn't just make up he doesn't drink the bubbly he doesn't open the packages that we got him fuck you too i got stuff to do take your your cute leo mug and go away steve like you're adorable you and leo mug your daughter is covid sorry it's dark humor because we've had the same experience by the way uh it is kind of funny the um uh you know always want to be respectful of course of of you know anybody that's had struggles with covid but steve and i were both talking before the show and our kids have like
Starting point is 00:06:51 bouncing off the walls covid so or had your leo's done but everly woke up this morning and she has been uh all gas all gas pedal all day it's crazy i don't know that she's healthier yeah when leo had it he was literally like my wife and i looked at each other we're like he's healthier like what's going on and then i got it and not a similar experience you know it's funny too like I had, um, uh, my girlfriend's, uh, sister, uh, didn't get it, but her daughter got it and her husband got it. And, um, you know, and, and you're in the same house, right? Uh, it's the, it's a bizarre thing. It's really, it's everybody that reached out and sent me some great ideas. I'm going to try, uh, I'm doing some things with Everly this weekend. Like I'm gonna try to make
Starting point is 00:07:39 slime with her. So I guess there's like a YouTube video on how you can make actual slime. There's a million yeah which is neat i'm kind of excited about that and then another suggestion came in it's like why don't you just make a pizza with her like have her roll out the dough and then come up with and i was like wow that's brilliant great so thank you to everybody who reached out and said here's an idea everything's new everything is new yeah here's how you make a pizza whoa that's new for adam at 34 yeah i've never made a pizza either i don't know how i'm gonna roll out the dough i don't even never even got the stuff for that do i have a rolling pin probably not adam you live in the beaches in toronto and you've never
Starting point is 00:08:19 made a non-pizza bro what's a non-beat oh with non-bread yeah you're like you literally instead of rolling it out and everything you just put toppings on non-bread because it's about the right size but here's the thing if you're in a power rank bread non is at the top of it there is no bread that is like if we're power ranking bread tell like okay where i'm saying at number three there's a lot of bread man i'm gonna say at number three i'm gonna say uh like because you can't count like donuts is that like that sort of thing right like we're not counting donuts right that's dough but it's not bread i got my number one okay what's your number one garlic bread with cheese oh see okay that's better than non-bread that's
Starting point is 00:09:03 my number three is a bagel bread yeah of course oh man oh can i what can i not power rank because i'll eat it all three two one garlic bread with cheese at three perfect butter butter croissant like the one i had in paris once oh croissant bread okay whoa whoa bread it's bread then a donut too we found the new one no we found the new make everyone hate you thing on the internet but donuts count because dough is different than than actual like a piece of bread you know that you can't have you can't make a donut sandwich you can make a croissant yeah they sell them every year no way do they yeah you get like two donuts in between like a burger like it's the thing oh yeah you've never seen that yeah it's like my stomach's upset just
Starting point is 00:09:57 talking about that every year they do some sort of gimmick like oh man we put four slabs of bacon between two human hearts and here's a little bit of gold on it yeah yeah gold human hearts we'd have to qualify what is
Starting point is 00:10:13 bread to make this list okay why are we going to qualify it then I don't know leave it to discord and then we do we power break breads on Monday sure okay we haven't even brought up focaccia first off we need to do a vote focaccia is overrated is donut are donuts bread. Donuts can't
Starting point is 00:10:29 be bread in my mind, but Jesse seems to think they are. Is that what you're saying, Jesse? Nah, I'm up. You gotta lay out the ground rules. Oh man, sourdough. What about cupcakes? That's cake. No, that's cake.
Starting point is 00:10:43 Is cake bread? That is cake. No, cake is not bread. But a croissant is bread? Yes. It's a whole thing that you have to make. I don't know. Everything is a thing you have to take. All right, fine.
Starting point is 00:10:59 We're power ranking bread on Monday. There it is. In the meantime, remember, this is the show that you come to for the hard-hitting news. Like bread. Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer.
Starting point is 00:11:12 That's why every step and dollar raised matters. On September 19th, join thousands in Toronto for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation Walk. Challenge yourself, friends, and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer register today at pmcfwalk.ca it's a bummer a bummer to say this it sucks is gila floor passed away this morning 70 years old uh unbelievable
Starting point is 00:11:45 hockey player um one of those people that you know reached god status in montreal and montreal is a tough place to reach god status because the bar is unbelievably high it's staggering like who has reached god status in montreal since gila fleur retired in the mid-80s like there's a word is why god status in montreal or because of the exit is he not he did win two cups there you know saku koivu was great but is he god status patch ready was great but is he god status and when i'm talking about the richards i'm talking about larry robinson beliveau beliveau um jeffrey on i'm talking with jacques plunt like leaf great jacques plunt um dryden dryden it has to be it has to be i mean that that whole like a lot of that team that won five cups in a row
Starting point is 00:12:41 has got to be on there and rightfully so is lemare i don't even think jacques lemare would be god status we're talking god right yeah holy build statues to this man one of one of the men who are the reason why i believe it's mcgill university has a course on montreal on the montreal canadians as a religion i can see it yeah absolutely um if you want one of the legends of the sport uh go watch the people that regularly tune into game over montreal with andrew despite the season they've I mean, there were people watching that show religiously when before Marty St. Louis arrived, when things were really bad, when it was like depressing. And the Canadians, Canadians fans are crazy and crazy in a good way for a reason. It's guys like Gila Fleur, right?
Starting point is 00:13:33 There's memories associated with that. And I think Guy Lafleur is one of the more interesting hockey players because he was he was an offensive demon before people worried about offensive players playing defense, if that makes any sense. Right. He was one of those guys where I don't know if people realize this because none of us were old enough to really watch him, but he had some serious defensive warts and it led to his exit from Montreal. all however he was so good offensively just didn't matter and i think it was back when people focused on the what people were great at a lot more than they focused on what they were not great at does that make sense yeah and it's like in the last week we've lost two of the greatest goal scorers ever mike bossy and gila fleur you know and and and those two it's kind of it just matches this season kind of perfectly and the highest
Starting point is 00:14:27 scoring season we've had since the 90s like two of the greatest goal scorers have left us and like Guy Lafleur just to put into some any kind of perspective when he was a junior player with the Quebec Ramparts he put up 130 goals
Starting point is 00:14:43 in one season is that good like and then the Canadians ended up drafting him first overall he has uh six consecutive 50 goal seasons like six consecutive 100 point seasons first player to do it unbelievable 50 goals 100 points first player to do it six years in a row that's fucking crazy like you know me uh i remember everything like encyclopedic there are two
Starting point is 00:15:11 uh interviews i've done with hockey legends that i don't remember a word of um bobby or i got to asking the question at a uh at a top prospects game i don't remember a thing he said and gila fleur i got to interview him at the hockey hall of fame uh just a few years ago cool i don't remember a thing is that you have video where is it it's it's got to be somewhere i'll i'll i'll find it so that you can link to it after um i didn't know you interviewed him there may not be video i think it might just be audio um but someone does have a picture of it and i believe he was getting it he was either getting a stamp in his honor or one of his former teammates was did he raise a cookie to the rafters he did not and i did not even think to ask him because uh
Starting point is 00:16:02 i was just inspired uh i was in awe this this is one of those things where you know sometimes i'm like oh man like what what am i gonna say because sort of people expect you to say things and in times like these and this is i think when it's appropriate to take a step back and let the people who really really knew these stars really had these stars as a part of their life take center stage like i'm looking forward to read uh to reading what eric angles has to say yeah about gila fleur he really shines uh in moments like this he really knows how to capture the magic of the Montreal Canadiens. It's, you know, the rivalry between the Leafs and Habs,
Starting point is 00:16:48 you're supposed to hate them, but there really is a beauty to the way Habs fans talk about Habs players and the history and the lore of the Montreal Canadiens. And the same goes for Mike Bossy as well, who we didn't really have an opportunity to talk about. Justin Bourne spoke about him. uh you know don't go listen to the people who who were really uh really had their lives enriched uh by these people the true diehard uh montreal canadians fans and new york islanders fans yeah
Starting point is 00:17:22 there's a difference between like we'll go back and we'll watch the videos we'll hit up the hockey db page but there's a difference between looking at all those numbers in the old film and then being there in the moment and feeling the energy and being a fan and living in the city. All of those things matter. And I'm excited to hear all of the stories that come out from the people who lived through those eras, the Mike Bossy era and the Gila Fleur era. Because when people pass away, that's one joy you can take is the stories that people have about their memories about living through the eras with everybody. So I'm excited to hear those things come out in the next couple of days and weeks so uh i wanted to uh i wanted to bring this up because i i have a
Starting point is 00:18:06 question for you guys and then i have a story because i always think if we never experienced something directly i mean steve did steve interviewed gila fleur but i can't remember right i don't remember because right well because the entire time we're just like holy shit it's gila fleur and there's no footage of it what's an interesting story we can find about find out about these guys that that you know maybe you haven't heard so i did a little research this morning because i had some time and um i have a question before i start the show or before i start this this story and the story the question is who's the best player that gila fleur ever played with on the same team same team
Starting point is 00:18:41 and we don't have to just count the canadians or the rangers or the nordiques team canada counts who's the best player that gila fleur ever played with well gila fleur i believe would have played with a young gretzky would young gila fleur have played with an old maurice richard that's a good question i don't think so i thought maurice richard was done in the 60s richard i'm gonna look i'm gonna look it up sure looking it up uh i mean that you talk about um that's that's a hell of a uh i love the hockey db version of kevin bacon that would be ridiculous Maurice Richard uh played till 1960 so no oh yeah but Henri Richard might be but he wasn't you know he wasn't his the pocket rocket was good but he wasn't his brother so no all he
Starting point is 00:19:39 got was the most Stanley Cups in NHL history yeah it's 11 11 yeah so he played till 75 which is crazy because he was just on the cusp of that that run that crazy run they went on and Henri Richard stopped winning cups at that age. Imagine he was like, no, I'm sticking around and Patty Marlowe-ing this one. Just put me on the ice for one minute a game. Let's go. So let's see. Gila Fleur started.
Starting point is 00:20:05 Gila Fleur. Who else? Who else would be great? Let's run up a list here. Matt Sundin. Matt Sundin. Because Gila Fleur was on the Quebec Nordiques. He was. You're right. And Joe Sackick. Yeah, he was on those teams. Frank Mahalovic. Mahalovic. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:20 Those guys who stopped playing just before I started generating memories, it always blows my mind that Guy Lafleur and Matt Sundin could have had some sort of intersection of careers. Oh, yeah. How crazy is that? Actually, when did you stop playing?
Starting point is 00:20:36 Same team for two years, I believe. 1991. Did Lafleur play into the 90s? Yeah, he did. 91. No way. I had his Nordiques OP Chi card. I think I might have that somewhere.
Starting point is 00:20:51 I think I gave it to you. Yeah. Oh, well, there you go. I did. I gave you all my hockey cards. You put Ken Dryden on that list? Absolutely. Probably the best goalie he played with.
Starting point is 00:21:00 He didn't play with Patrick Waugh in Montreal because I think Waugh took over just after he retired. No, yeah, he didn't. And that was on that crazy run. They went on an 85. Henri Richard? Yeah, he'd have played with him. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:12 So the reason I bring this up is because, you know, lafleur and gretzky did play together at a couple like you know canada cups or whatever they were called back then but i thought it would be interesting for you to know that they almost played together in the nhl did you know that no okay so let me explain so let's let's backtrack here he lafleur had some injuries and that sort of thing at the end of the run you know imagine i know that there were only two rounds of playoffs back in the day but imagine winning five cups in a row and what that does to your body right and he missed three seasons yeah six seasons in a row of 50 goals and 100 points five cups in a row yeah i mean like your body's toast
Starting point is 00:21:52 at that point and what's interesting is ken dryden jacques lamere and a few other key players retired at the end of the 1979 series season and so uh the canadians lost in 1980 to the north stars in seven games in the second round. So it's not like they weren't right in there. And then, of course, you've got the rise of – you have Marcel Dion kicking ass on the West Coast and then Bossy and Gretzky also kind of rising up. And it's so funny that we – I mentioned Jacques Lemaire for a reason.
Starting point is 00:22:25 Jacques Lemaire became the coach of the Canadians in the mid-'80s when they weren't great. And he was, as you remember, a defensively-minded guy. Jacques Lemaire believed in team defense and Guy Lafleur did not necessarily. And I want you to imagine, put yourself in Guy Lafleur's shoes, right? Like Jacques Lemaire was a great player, but you're Guy Lafleur. And your former teammate, who was less good than you, has now taken over behind the bench of your team and is telling you, Guy, you got to play defense.
Starting point is 00:22:56 You got to do something that you've never done in 15 years. And by the way, I know you've got like 1,500 points, but I'm sorry, you can't do this anymore. You can't play like this. Right. That's a tough pill to swallow. And apparently, and I don't believe that Guy Lafleur was the only guy that had big disagreements with Jacques Lemaire over Jacques Lemaire's career. I think Jacques Lemaire was pretty set in his ways, and that was what it was. And obviously, he saw some success. but Guy Lafleur and Jacques Lemaire hated each other so much that it became intolerable and here's what happened Guy went to another former teammate Serge Savard who was the general manager of the Canadians at the time and requested a trade and Serge Savard said no fucking way am
Starting point is 00:23:38 I going to do that because Canadians fans will kill me and it's right right like he's a legend so refused to trade him so Lafleur's like fine I'll retire and he did and that was in 84-85 The next year, the Habs went on to win the Stanley Cup. And LeFleur was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in the following years. And after he was inducted into the Hall of Fame, he was like, you know what? I'm coming out. I'm coming back. So from 1988 to 1991, he played for the Rangers and the Nordique.
Starting point is 00:24:07 And what is interesting is he played that one year with the Rangers, and he went back to the Montreal Forum, scored two goals against Patrick Waugh. The Rangers lost 7-5, but Canadiens fans were cheering for Guy, and they were chanting his name. Now, after the season was over, the Rangers fired their head coach, and Guy
Starting point is 00:24:28 Le Fleur was a good friend with him. His name was Michel Bergeron, and he wanted to go and play for Michel Bergeron with the Nordiques. You imagine the Ottawa Senators or the Toronto Maple Leafs firing a coach, and then the other team picking it up.
Starting point is 00:24:45 Like that's what, that's what the Nordics did. They're like, we're going to pick up our rivals coach. That's great. Sounds awesome. And, uh, or sorry, the Canadians or the Rangers. I screwed that up. But anyway, long story short at that time, the Los Angeles Kings with Wayne Gretzky in 1989 offered Gila Fleur a million dollars.
Starting point is 00:25:05 Wow. A million bucks. Come play with Gretzky. Million bucks. What's that in perspective? Like, well, so it's, it's difficult because I think Gretzky had that clause, right? that he was making like he had to be the highest paid player in the league and in in 1993 he made 8.8 million dollars on the cake what yeah gretzky salary 1993 was 8.8 million dollars that's how
Starting point is 00:25:30 not yo you want to talk about how uh players need to participate more in the profits of the league that there's your that should shock you a million dollars in in what 89 a million bucks in 89 now I want to put that into perspective. Head and shoulders above his colleagues. A car would have been $5,000 at that point. A really nice car might have been $20,000. You know, like a really nice, a Ferrari might have been $50,000. So you can do a lot with a million bucks in 1989.
Starting point is 00:26:00 And he turned it down to play with the Quebec Nordiques for the next two years. And they had a great young team, Sackick, Sundin, as you mentioned. But I think it's kind of cool that the LA Kings were like, here's all the money in the world. come play with wayne and gila fleur said you know what i'd rather play with the nordiques and just piss off canadians fans how funny is that i just thought that was a cool story right that's crazy crazy wow yeah and damn a lot of people do not know this but uh gila fleur was selected in an expansion draft
Starting point is 00:26:33 did you know that to which team so the Minnesota North Stars selected LeFleur with the 20th pick in the 1991 expansion draft he had decided to retire for a second time as a player so he had verbally agreed to an off-ice job with the Nordiques however since his retirement papers had yet to be officially filed the league's bylaws prevented him from accepting a job with a team that didn't own his playing rights so the North Stars solved this by trading him two Quebec in exchange for the rights to a former Nordique who'd been playing in Switzerland named Alan Hayworth. Hayworth played
Starting point is 00:27:09 another year of professional hockey, but I just thought that was kind of neat. There's North Stars and the San Jose Sharks. They called it a dispersal draft, but essentially it was the expansion draft, and Gila Fleur was one of the guys selected in that. Rob Zettler was another guy who was selected. Wait, so what happened
Starting point is 00:27:25 with his rights? Because he didn't play for them, right? Basically, the North Stars, had they been smarter about this in today's asset management world they selected gila fleur because they wanted to grab an asset they knew he was going to retire it seems like anyway the way i've read it and they were like well you know if he wants to play with or if he wants to work with the nordique he can't because at the time the team owned your right even after you were retired which is kind of crazy yeah i know the nhl rules before gary betman are bananas and uh the league was bananas it's crazy
Starting point is 00:28:01 like i'm looking the guy he was traded for was in switzerland for several years before the trade um a couple of a couple of important names i think that were selected in that draft as well jeff hackett rob ramage bob big daddy bob mcgill um big name uh there i'm just looking for anybody like arthur's urbe was mentioned it was in that draft as well um so it's just kind of interesting you know and and that's the expansion draft nobody talks about is the north stars and uh and the san jose sharks well just you wait you know summer full of trade trees you you never know what steve dangle's gonna be the one what are you chuckling at i would love that i would love to know how bob mcgill went from the is it the north stars that he got selected by the sharks
Starting point is 00:28:51 it's yeah i just i don't know the old ones i always have to take a deep breath before i do them because they can be a lot of work yeah and it's the gretzky one took forever some of that stuff gets lost too it's like yeah it was like a fourth round pick conditional and they selected the guy and he never played and you just may not even know what his name was well and it also requires a lot of research because if you just look at the numbers you're just like oh and then this guy fell off or oh this guy was a bust or oh this draft pick didn't work out and then you find out like no there was actually like something tragic or no there was uh this or that you can't just you can't uh as as much as i would like to go through everything quickly a lot of stuff
Starting point is 00:29:38 requires you to to stop and think and man with some of those bigger ones with like a hundred players in them it's difficult all right especially like from that time period if something just tragic happens in the 80s it's not easily Google-able you know like that's usually a story somebody has to tell and it has to be retold by somebody else in the hockey world and then it has to come up in
Starting point is 00:30:00 a 2022 Google search you know so those things are really hard to do like I feel your pain there was there's a player and I'm ashamed I don't even know his name I'm looking it up right now Rick Westhead wrote a book
Starting point is 00:30:17 about them Finding Murph I can't remember which trade tree he was in. It might have been the Gretzky one. Joe Murphy. The book is How Joe Murphy Went From Winning a Championship to Living Homeless in the Bush. He was a former first overall pick, and I'm pretty sure in my trade tree, I was just like,
Starting point is 00:30:40 oh, yeah, he's a former first overall pick. Right. Yeah. I didn't know. I didn't know. that's why a book like ken reads one night only is so impressive because it's not just the telling of the story anybody can write down a story that you know that's been told a million times but it's the interviews you guys go and talk to these guys to find out hey what happened
Starting point is 00:30:59 on your only ever game and then what happened the rest of your life that's not just out there readily available and then you have to tell that story in the book the way i got my book deal is they originally were like would you like to write a trade tree book and i i think correctly uh said I think that's too ambitious of a project for my first book. I would love to revisit that, but I could never do the colossal deals. And if I did, it would take years because I would want to interview every single player who is involved because every single player has their own story. You can write a book on John Scott going from Arizona to Montreal alone. Well, I mean, that story was pretty interesting anyway, with all the backstory story.
Starting point is 00:31:40 They're very literally making a movie. Yeah. You know what I mean? i bet bill daly and gary batman look great on that one by the way totally oh they look great come out of it super good us too we're like hey wouldn't it be funny to vote this guy in and then it worked well so we said that and then merrick and washinsky said it too and i think that on the same day same day and we didn't coordinate it we didn't coordinate that it's weird we just both had the same idea but i think they took most of the heat for it we didn't did like everybody's
Starting point is 00:32:09 like oh it's merrick versus washinsky we're like okay yeah them for sure and i don't i don't maybe you skated i got a talking to did you yeah actually yeah yeah hey steve you and your silly billy podcast stop yeah i called jeff merrick and you should say this and you should say that i'm like you're jeff merrick you can say that and you can say that i i uh i just got here i can't say that jeff listen we did it as a lark it wasn't supposed to be totally like mean or anything but what was mean it was the reaction to it like the way the nhl handled it the way the coyotes handled it the way the canadians handled it was embarrassing just absolutely embarrassing and john scott to his credit took it and ran and he's got a successful podcast he says he's a book um
Starting point is 00:32:59 all that the the movie is being made by disney i believe is it i know the heirs one is oh is the heirs yeah i think you might be confusing it with regardless like i mean he took it and ran and made at something and look at that right like how many even stars don't get that kind of press after their career is over and uh you couldn't root for i mean i remember interviewing him at breakfast television and i told him like we're one of the podcasts that said vote for you um and he was cool about it like he was totally and he's six foot a million so he's huge and uh was totally cool and and and uh made something of it so good for him it's a great story i mean one of the most popular hockey movies in recent memory isn't called really good player
Starting point is 00:33:39 called goon because that's the story we love that story yeah we love the underdog we do um okay so so let's start with the stuff last night that isn't that controversial with the leafs and lightning um the uh first off really heartwarming to see stephen stampose's family in the crowd cheering him on for .954. He becomes, against the Leafs, has to be, he becomes Win the goal. Yeah, of course. And a really good one, too.
Starting point is 00:34:11 Sam comes goal. He becomes the points leader for the Lightning all-time, 954. I don't even know if there's a Leafs player that has that many for the Leafs. Like, did Sundin hit that? We had a player score 1,000 points for the Leafs? Sundin was shy
Starting point is 00:34:27 of 1,000. He was shy of 1,000. I have it right here. Matt Sundin finished with 987 points. He is the all-time leader on the Toronto Maple Leafs. Second place is Daryl Sittler at 916. Wow. If Keon comes in third at 858.
Starting point is 00:34:47 And the Lightning will have played a quarter of the years that the Leafs have. That is how much, sorry, how little star power has ever played for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Honestly. Also, I just, sometimes I forget how long ago certain things were and well stamkos was drafted in 2008 it is 2022 remember when he was young i do he was a baby he was a baby he was a baby and and like it was talked about oh he's soft
Starting point is 00:35:18 and he's this brittle little kid and i just remember so nike scooped him up right away and it was around the same time i was working for them and i showed up to this um commercial shoot slash interview whatever you called them in the summer um and i was just like who is this man in front of me it was it was the summer of stefan it was the summer of steven and uh from that moment forward he was just this gary roberts byproduct gronk wrecking the league and scoring a bajillion trillion goals he is one of those gary gary roberts like uh trained people right like he goes to the gary roberts camps and stuff he put gary roberts on the map as a trainer obviously gary roberts put gary roberts on the map as a player but he uh like he was
Starting point is 00:36:14 i don't think anybody's saying that no no he was a he was but stamkos his evolution from skinny kid to that was attributed to gary roberts by the way gary roberts was like training before people really trained too like he was in the era right at the end of the era where you'd have like a whiskey and a cigarette in between periods and um you know at one point in his career his nerve damage in his neck was so bad that he couldn't lift his arm up past here like past over his head could not lift it up had to retire for a couple of years and i think he came back with the carolina hurricanes and the only reason he was able to do that was because he ate well trained well really understood what the body was and if you see him today and we did a couple years
Starting point is 00:36:59 ago at the i think this was the matt sundin tournament yes for leo vegas um when we were there for that uh seeing him like you know all the other guys are still pretty in shape like antropov still pretty intimidating mccabe still pretty intimidating sudden dean is still sundin like gary roberts has gotten scarier and there's oh yeah that man and he didn't give a shit that like a bunch of us couldn't skate that that dude was out there to win he did not care at all at the heritage classic like yeah oh he did not care did not care he was there to win damn it yeah it was a scary man it's a very scary man too much man um the Leafs lose 8-1.
Starting point is 00:37:45 Do you guys care too much about this one? Like, what? Does this say anything about the playoffs to you? He cared in the LFR. Well, it's just dumb to let a team that is sort of floundering a little bit or not playing to their standard. It's just dumb to let them feel this good.
Starting point is 00:38:05 You know what I mean? It's not even just that they won 8-1. It's that so many things went right for them. Vasilevsky has a great game. Stamkos scores a patented Stamkos goal and it's a record and Kucherov gets his 600 and and and like everyone everyone is feeling good about themselves and that is exactly the sort of thing that the lightning can ride into the playoffs that are less than two weeks from now and how do the Leafs feel heading into the playoffs less than two weeks from now
Starting point is 00:38:38 i think they feel fine i think that's a one-off maybe i hope it's a one that's how they were treating it and that's how they should be handling it internally but i think there was an opportunity here to squish that bug not not lose like that listen you're not gonna win every game however that's the first time they've lost by seven goals since 2016 i think they said on the broadcast yeah it was i think you know what i remember about the 2016 leafs is they sucked no nashville's 2014 i don't remember who it would have been against it was nothing nice though bruins maybe bruins maybe maybe i uh uh i i i did you know it it it's so funny like you know you're gonna have stinker games you don't usually think you're gonna have
Starting point is 00:39:30 one stinker games but you're gonna have stinker games it it happens um but i was i was sort of um not taken aback by but heartened by the fact that after the game leaf players obviously like well it's unacceptable we don't like it but it wasn't like they took it to heart and and and i think in years past there sometimes has been and i think we've seen it on on the ice and we've seen it in the press conferences too between both coaches babcock and keith and the players you go it's not that we lost it's that something's wrong you know right and i don't think i felt that at all because i don't think something is wrong i think first off i think shalgren's a kid 25 year old kid but he's a kid in the sense that he hasn't
Starting point is 00:40:14 played a lot of games in the nhl and you put him up against the two-time stanley cup champions who are still very very insanely good behind a defense just not trying yeah yeah well yeah and that's part of it too, right? Just not trying. Someone should tell Justin Hall he has to show up for three periods. Yo, what was it? The eighth goal? Was it the seventh goal or the eighth goal? I think it was the eighth one.
Starting point is 00:40:37 Where he was just clearly playing shinny. When I started, I was like, okay, you're getting your ass kicked. You want to send a message physically and everything. But at the end of the day, that poor kid who is currently your backup goalie and one groin tweak away from being your starting goalie,
Starting point is 00:40:53 that kid is not getting pulled. he's he's not leaving this game unless he gets hurt he's playing his play for him at least for god's sake and they couldn't even do that that's why when i mentioned the defense last uh last episode when i was like sandy could come in we can bring hall out and you're like oh why not leave it the way it is and that's why it well justin hall listen he has the talent we've seen it that's what's frustrating is he can do it but something's off this year i don't know if it's an injury or if it's confidence or both, but he hasn't
Starting point is 00:41:25 been the Justin Hall that we've become used to. Is that fair? Yeah, totally. I also think a lot of guys are kind of checked out. Not necessarily checked out, but the effort's not there that it's going to be game one of the playoffs. That's why I'm in the middle of, hey, this
Starting point is 00:41:41 game means absolutely nothing, and I want to see you guys try a little bit more in these last three games that you got left here. Right. just but for in a week and a half when we get to game one I think it'll be May 2nd like everything resets
Starting point is 00:41:56 it's game number one if the effort's not there then then I start then we all start screaming and crying and being like what the fuck is going on Leafs but until then like I think I think they get a reset at zero when we reach that and for here just kind of we got to ride out these last couple games
Starting point is 00:42:12 and just see what they have try everything you want Keith oh absolutely something I think both coaches and fan bases could agree on last night there were entirely too many shots blocked what are you doing stop it stop it all of you that's enough that's enough you can't turn it off entirely no but okay if you're gonna switch a couple things off make that one of them shot blocking stop it the lightning stop it the leaves stop it i'm sure i'm sure i'm sure cooper and keefer both losing their minds yeah losing their minds kerfoot uh took a nasty one someone
Starting point is 00:42:56 on the lightning took a really nasty one i can't remember who it was and he hobbled to the bench uh maroon maroon took a really bad one yeah and did not look comfortable at all and that was after his fight with Wayne Simmons by the way like I talked about Simmons fighting a guy 52 pounds heavier than him and I was like and he was chirping at Maroon who's even heavier and then he fought him madman what an absolute mad lad but Steve the big chatter today is not about the fight what is it Adam it's about the it's about the WWE question that Leah Hextall classless classless that's what I saw on Twitter by the way I don't think Leah Hextall's class is at all
Starting point is 00:43:37 but Jesse can we run the clip nah we're allowed to it's from the game though but it's not game play I don't think they're going to take us down alright the clip here we go the clip is playing
Starting point is 00:43:53 this has been a very physical contest I was privy to your conversation with Pat Maroon here in between the benches I know you guys have a history and have dropped the mitts before he called you soft my question is are you you should ask him i don't know we've never dropped the gloves he's never obliged me before so i don't know i don't think i'm the one that's off all right wayne best of luck the rest of the way all right thank you okay so everybody uh everybody and their grandmother
Starting point is 00:44:17 waited on this one for some reason this was the one that everybody's like well you know what i so what do you think um not about the answer but the question yeah so so wayne simmons noted wayne simmons who is wayne simmons patrick maroon says you're soft are you and like i immediately took that as tongue in cheek and like some people called it cringe and they said you know it wasn't funny or it fell flat fine that's fine that you think that but let's if you're going to judge this just be sure it's for the right reasons don't say oh man what kind of a question she's kidding she's very obviously like it's tongue in cheek i don't know if she's going for a joke necessarily but she's going for fun and immediately
Starting point is 00:45:16 i'm like okay wait she's leah hexall this is ron hexall's daughter uh wayne simmons played for the philadelphia flyers i know she's worked in philadelphia surely they know each other surely they have some sort of rapport and she tweeted today i've interviewed wayne many times i know he isn't soft he knows he isn't soft we're curate we're creating a narrative which played into the game and having some wait for it fun oh she said like i not every joke has to kill not every joke has to be hilarious or even tongue-in-cheek little bit that you're going for needs to kill um sometimes it falls flat i've had many a thing fall flat but uh you know the only time i got upset about it is like what do people think i'm serious like you i'll give you an example
Starting point is 00:46:10 so i was doing some fun content with the leafs at leafs media day and that is when i went i met wayne simmons for the first time did i joke around with him the way i joked with morgan riley later in the day who i have met many times no no because i don't know him like that it's not even like riley and i are best friends but when i showed riley me playing hockey like so that's that that was one of the videos we did i showed all the leafs playing hockey spezza was relatively friendly and jack was relatively friendly simmons like was laughing and actually trying to be helpful riley roasted the shit out of him which is the best part that was easily the best part like this and justin hall who is just very unintentionally funny like
Starting point is 00:46:58 seems like a great guy he's a very funny guy um yeah i throughout the day people were talking about how like he is as a teammate and i was like i okay i gotta see what's going on here and then i ended up interviewing him last and i was like oh i totally get it but riley roasted the shit out of me and people were like man like i saw some comments like man riley seems to really hate steve i bet he's seen his videos well he has seen my videos but like we i went back at him too and i think a lot of that ended up getting cut and imagine people thinking i was serious like chirping riley for losing to david ayers and and stuff like that like i'm not i'm not being serious it's i know the guy and i'm comfortable and but maybe i catch him on the wrong day and he's not down to play
Starting point is 00:47:46 like that i don't know i just don't think it's that serious with leah the thing is hockey is so the hockey broadcasting is so buttoned up suit and tie we're gonna sit there we're gonna give our serious hockey opinion i don't like that people are dumping on somebody trying to do something different and make a joke and joke around with a player in the middle of the game on a bench she knows he's not soft like that's that's very obvious and clear like steve dangle do you like hockey like steve steve do you yell sometimes like i i'm asking these questions because i know and i know the answer like so for for saying like oh how could she ask that question no she's trying something and it's ridiculous for us to ask for hockey broadcasting to be more
Starting point is 00:48:35 and exciting and and have opinions and do different stuff and then when somebody tries something different that we have a whole twitter conversation for 12 hours like come on let it let it happen maybe you don't like the joke maybe it fell flat in a moment for you um that's okay but don't roast her for that encourage the trying doing something out of the box encourage the attempt there because there was something she tried and i appreciate that i appreciate anybody in hockey trying to do anything different that's fun i think in the states that like uh i think this is a non-story it's not because they're used to personality because to stand out you gotta have it you gotta have personality in nfl and nba and whatever it is
Starting point is 00:49:20 like look at the guys even in baseball who have personalities now uh baseball the old man's game It's becoming a young man's cool, fun game again. And I think, or young man, you know what I mean? I didn't mean like just men. Just throwing that out there. I think what I liked about Leah Hextall is this. There's a very good chance that the Lightning and Leafs play in the first round. Very good chance she's doing between the benches there.
Starting point is 00:49:42 And there's a very good chance that ESPN is going to get enormous ratings because Tampa Bay Lightning fans, they show up. They are there in the stands. It's one of the best places to see a game in the NHL. No one talks about it. It's one of the best. Emily rules and you're saying that because you've been there
Starting point is 00:49:58 I'm telling you Adam have you been to Tampa Adam how many arenas have you been to like four no six I think Adam going to one game in Tampa is me going to the draft in Philly I have been to five games with lightning games in Tampa thank you very much
Starting point is 00:50:15 wow holy shit talk about it why don't you I think what they're doing is they're setting up a rivalry for the playoffs. And because there's one there and exactly. And here's the problem, right? We talk about this all the time for the broadcasting perspective is we do not do enough to set the story. There's a reason why for Sunday night football games or Sunday afternoon football
Starting point is 00:50:40 games, they can do like a three hour broadcast talking about the storylines. They're setting up things and they're going to throw a bunch of storylines at you. A couple of them are going to fail or go flat or not even be a factor, but one of them is going to hit. And then they're going to come back to it at the end of the broadcast and go see we talked about this and what do you think of the response and that's what people start talking about on twitter and gets you excited i love the question i don't like what what ill will could she possibly have had she knows he's not soft she knows hockey her last name's hex call okay so and she knows what do you think she's stupid well that's the thing like so the whole point was like hey i'm gonna i'm gonna give here's
Starting point is 00:51:19 little needle from patrick maroon what do you think about that wayne and wayne's probably like i'm gonna fucking kill him like and that's that's okay that's hockey is very intense i i love that it might it he might not have been in the mood to play because of how the game was going and because you know the adrenaline's pumping and everything but i would 100 attempt to make a similar statement to that tongue-in-cheek a joke whatever you want to call it i would 100 try that if I was standing there between the benches the entire time and had heard all that going on.
Starting point is 00:51:54 100%. Would it have killed? No. No, probably not. I can tell you right now, there'd be a whole account of Steve's cringe in between the bench moments. Steve, earnestly a Habs fan, dangle.
Starting point is 00:52:12 Yeah, he's never been the same since he put on that Habs jersey. Get off the road. Get off the road. cut up your license you're a danger to everyone around you okay now let's talk about this and this is something that jesse i know drives jesse up the wall and oh before before we leave the leafs uh clifford and simmons were fine today and oh i didn't know that he hit a clifford hit a man with the butt of his stick that's on the head i mean it's funny he's getting under perry's he's
Starting point is 00:52:39 tapping him but you got to be fine for that a hundred percent a hundred percent you have to be fined for that. You can't. Barzal was fined for grabbing Marner's jersey. I do think it's funny that Clifford's already under Corey Perry's skin like tap, tap, tap. What was Simmons fined for? Charging. Oh.
Starting point is 00:52:57 Really? Oh, against that was in the third period. Yeah, I'm not surprised. I wonder if Sergeyev's going to get something though. That punch against Marner was brutal. That's what everybody's upset. So that's the conversation right now is Sergachev doesn't get anything for punching a man
Starting point is 00:53:13 in the back of the head Simmons gets 250k for charging 2500k can you imagine we're fining you one third of your salary holy shit that's a down payment on a house
Starting point is 00:53:31 in Toronto hey by the way I want to ask you this did my internet freeze no it's been freezing lately we're just listening really attentively so So the rivalry is already there. The excitement's already there. Wayne Simmons, we've been talking about Wayne Simmons a little bit. I've mentioned it a few times.
Starting point is 00:53:49 You kind of go, there seemed to be a mid-season lull. I wonder if this isn't the game that turns on playoff Wayne Simmons. Because that's what you have him here for. You're not having Wayne Simmons there because you need him on Tuesday night in November against St. Louis. You have Wayne Simmons for the playoffs, just like Tampa has Corey Perry for the playoffs. So is this the thing that activates the Simmons machine?
Starting point is 00:54:14 Oh, I think it was activated a while ago. Yeah? I think, oh yeah, he's been turning it up. I just hope he doesn't overdo it. Like, I think... What do you mean? Because we need him in the lineup? Well, I remember the end of last season, Joe Thornton was really settling into his role as team fourth-line dick.
Starting point is 00:54:37 That was great. Remember his completely unexplained rivalry with Nikolai Ehlers? He hated him. He wanted to kill him. And I was just the whole game. I was like, why are you doing that? He cross-checked him so hard that he broke his stick, went back to the bench, got another stick, and did it again.
Starting point is 00:54:56 And then the playoffs came around, and did you see any of that? Nope. Nope. You didn't. part. So with Simmons, he was such a battering ram, especially in the early part of the series against Montreal.
Starting point is 00:55:12 They need him with a rested body, and I'm seeing a lot of people talk about his spot in the lineup. I think what he brings in order to take him out of the lineup, you need a good reason, right? Like a down in a series and you need
Starting point is 00:55:28 more goals. Well, or you have a game breaker who can replace soon right so you know if the decision comes down to him and clifford i understand that i boy i have a really hard time taking out blackwell i have a really hard time taking out spezza right so i think it probably ends up being simmons blackwell spezza at least game one so i want a fresh as a daisy wayne simmons for game one of the series maybe they rest in the last couple games too just you know let the you know let the uh the bruises here heal a little bit now we do have to move on
Starting point is 00:56:09 it's supposed to be shorter show on fridays it never is but it's supposed to be um uh so jesse um jesse was driven bananas by this one and i think you'll you'll like uh i think you'll you'll hate it too um mike yeo unable to challenge a goal last night philadelphia versus montreal uh hand pass i think it was in the crease too and jesse what's your big problem with this one well what happened yeah brendan gallagher uh had a hand pass to mike hoffman and it led directly to a goal uh you're not allowed to do that you're not allowed to pass the puck with your with your glove to another player and uh montreal scored to make it 2-1 for philadelphia at four minutes and 29 seconds in the first period uh so mikey o goes over to the refs and he's like i want to
Starting point is 00:57:00 i want to challenge that go to the video review because it's clearly a hand pass bring the goal back and the refs come over to him and they say no that is not a challengeable uh instance on the hockey on the hockey in the hockey game you can't challenge that we can't go to review for it and they continue playing and it's a goal but in the rule book that is something you can challenge the refs should have awarded the challenge to philadelphia and gone to the review and taken back the goal for me i don't want to become the hey every time the referees do something i'm the dump on the referee guy but i think there's been so many egregious instances this season with refereeing in the NHL
Starting point is 00:57:42 that it's become an issue and we've reached game 78 and the referees don't know the rules of the game. There's two of them on the ice plus linesman and neither of them knew that you can challenge this call
Starting point is 00:57:57 and nobody called from Toronto or New York either. Nobody gave them the heads of the Philly knew they could challenge it and they were like, what? We can't challenge it. Penalty box guy waves him down. Hey, yeah, you can challenge this and it's just it just blows my mind that a referee can't doesn't know the own rules of the sport because that's entirely your job now let me piss you off okay okay what do you
Starting point is 00:58:24 expect him to know the whole book it's huge have you ever read it okay oh my god oh my god engage with somebody who came up with that oh i i can guarantee you that would be the nhl response if you push them on it but they're not going to say anything well you know people make mistakes jesse yeah the this these things are like tenfold because what happens after this is just just what happened right there nothing you get silence after all of these things happen when um two episodes ago when a referee uh cory servette passes the puck to the boston bruins I still can't believe that. You don't get an announcement from the NHL being like,
Starting point is 00:59:10 hey, this is what happened. This is what we're going to do about. There's no accountability here. And if a referee doesn't know the rules and is not awarding a challenge, what happens if this happens in the playoffs? Okay, so you're going to litigate this at the next GM meetings and then you'll fix it then? What are we supposed to do here if the refs can't get the game right
Starting point is 00:59:32 And it's literally affecting goals here. The game ended six, three between the flyers and the Canadians. You couldn't have a game that means less at this point in the season, two teams that are just out. So it didn't really matter. The right team won in the end, the goal didn't end up mattering,
Starting point is 00:59:48 but what if this happens in a moment that truly matters? And that's the goal that decides a game or a series. Well, then they get the call, right? Jesse. I mean, come on.
Starting point is 00:59:59 I also think for a guy like Mike, you, it matters. Matters for Mike Yeo. Well, he's fighting for his job. That's what I'm saying, right? He's going to be the sacrificial lamb for a terrible Flyers management. And so if I were him, I'd want to look strong the last 10 games of the year to go,
Starting point is 01:00:15 see, there is something here, and I got it. I got it. And he looks anything but. That's right. Referees in the game allowed an illegal goal. Mike Yeo, one of the only NHL coaches to call his own firing several games before it happened. That's correct. Remember that?
Starting point is 01:00:31 I do. In St. Louis, the year they won the cup, he's like, I don't think I'm going to last long. And he didn't. And then he went and then the next guy is going to win the cup. Like, I couldn't believe he said that. Did he say that? No, he didn't say that.
Starting point is 01:00:42 Oh, man. That would have been great. I do. Sorry. I want to say one thing because people have been talking about how difficult the refs have had it this season in terms of just their life. Right. Like, it just hasn't been easy.
Starting point is 01:00:58 whomst among us uh has had it easy right uh when it comes all this shit i'm sure i don't need to run you through it i don't doubt that at all i don't doubt that for one second what is the nhl doing to make their lives easier to make their jobs easier because if their performance is dipping as a result of all the hardships uh everything they've had to endure where's the nhl to help these guys what is the nhl doing i would like to know that i'd read that story i'd read that story that'd be a great uh little pr story for the nhl you know we noticed you know something going on so we decided to give i don't know this young guy a chance or we decided to switch this up or like what is it what is it because if they're struggling they need to be able
Starting point is 01:01:56 to look above them for help and i just wonder if that is even in place for nhl officials and and to that point steve uh and i and i don't mean to go too too hard at the refs personally because again it is it's a it's a chaotic crazy fucking game there are going to be missed calls the thing about being human is that especially if you have a game that's reffed by human beings um there's going to be mistakes and that's what you accept unless you want to go to robotic referees um um um umpires which i think actually tennis did it tennis did it it works it's working okay for them just to just piggyback on that adam just everything i said isn't an attack on these people as persons no that's how i took it differentiate that please please take that i'm not attacking
Starting point is 01:02:41 you as a person i'm just attacking the game of hockey and what happened in a freaking sport that's fun jesse said not only is he a shitty referee but he did a bad job raising his two children no uh that's what i can't believe you said that you know what the new name of the show is called the jesse blake ref suck report brought to you by sdpn no the ref suck as people and that's right my thinking though is that that you know i know quote unquote this season's been tough i don't think this season's been tough i think what's happened is you've seen fans get more educated and be able to spread information a little bit faster on places like reddit and Twitter and discord and replays exist and gifts exist. And when you see it over and over
Starting point is 01:03:23 and over again, you might see it during a game and forget about it. But if you go log on the next day and you see it five more times, you're like, holy shit, that's really bad. What we've seen is fans knowledge of the game explode in the last five years, I think. And they just don't accept it anymore. So the referees having a bad time, I think they were getting away with, and I think the NHL was getting away with subpar officiating for years and they haven't done anything about it and they don't want to do anything about it, but the reality is I think the average person knows 10 to 100 times more than they would have known before. And that's because of social media. And I think now
Starting point is 01:03:58 people are starting to demand, hey, listen, guys, you got to be better than this. You do. And I keep saying this, as soon as Vegas, who sets all the odds on this shit, says it, the NHL will do something. But until that time, it'll be this chaotic shit that you continue to do because NHL head office is completely fine with it. Yeah. I'm good with mistakes. I'm okay with mistakes. I'm not okay with literally not knowing the,
Starting point is 01:04:23 the, the rule book. No, you nailed it. I'm not okay with that. With the information that's available now, because what we've seen in baseball this season is that in the public sphere, this season is tracking of one-to-one every single pitch and every single MLB
Starting point is 01:04:40 game and whether or not it's a strike or a ball. And there are Twitter accounts that have huge followings that are dedicated to just tweeting out every single game, how many balls and strikes umpires get wrong and correct. In the public space, just readily, everybody loves to follow it. So now the conversation becomes, oh, this referee, this umpire screwed up this many times, this one. It's not that they're screwing up more. It's just that we know now. Yeah. And the same thing has happened in Hawk. We know now scouting the refs exists. We know what these guys call. We know how many penalties we know when a little thing happens in a meaningless Flyers Canadians game in the middle of the season when nobody gives a shit. It's a story because everything spreads so easily. the ump scorecards are wild because there was a game recently
Starting point is 01:05:31 where an umpire I think missed four pitches all game which is one yeah he missed one but there was a ump like three nights ago he missed one pitch all game and it was on like the second pitch of the game and everybody was applauding
Starting point is 01:05:47 him yeah what an alien right but then there was that notoriously poorly umpired game between I think was it the jays and the athletics or the rangers uh athletics athletics where what was it on called strikes he only got 68 percent of them correct you any asshole off the street could get 68 what do you you as a steve you as a hockey fan who doesn't watch every blue jays game who's a passive MLB fan knows that
Starting point is 01:06:23 an umpire in a random game got 68% of strike calls correct. That is crazy information for you to be sitting there to ask. Yes, 100%. And we know that, so you got to get shit right now because we have too much information.
