Panago Pizza presents SSDPP, the Steve Dangle Podcast, with your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam
Wilde, and Jesse Blake.
Let's go!
All right, I finally bought Jesse his pizza.
Woo!
So we are starting this show full of pizza, but don't worry if you, people who are freaked
out by ASMR out there, we've already eaten it.
We're not going to eat it into the microphone.
Nom, nom, nom.
It was delicious.
Jesse had pizza, which means I've had pizza.
Which means I had some, too.
I bought a Hawaiian and a true Canadian, because that's what we both wanted.
Yeah.
And I ate a little bit of both.
I've grown to respect Hawaiian.
Oh.
Yes.
Wow.
Given your heritage, especially, I would have thought that you would have been very particular about that.
I know.
Like, I'm probably not going to order it.
But if it's there, I'm going to be like, hey, get in my face.
It's hard not to like pizza.
Is there anything that you guys, because Panago does a lot of different types of pizzas.
A lot of different pizzas.
Is there any one ingredient that for you is a no way, never?
Well, obviously, bell peppers.
Bell peppers, yes.
Other than that, I'm willing to try everything.
Are you going to enjoy everything, though?
That's the question.
Beyond bell peppers.
You don't really need to eat it, but it's like an ah, nah.
I'm not a big mushroom guy, and true Canadian, I really enjoy the mushrooms on it.
You know what can go to hell?
Okay, tell me.
You know what really grinds my gears?
What grinds your pizza gears, Jesse?
Anyone who dares eat an anchovy
Screw you
I was just about to say
I would try it
I've never tried it
Have you tried it though?
Yes, garbage
Oh, okay
Who wants to eat fish on your pizza?
What is it like?
I think it's breadfish
Breadfish?
Oh, it's bread?
And it's a little
Saucy?
No, because pizza's bread, right?
It's saucy breadfish
Who cares?
You ever had one out of the tin?
No
Okay, so it's a bit of a
I think they store it in vinegar
I think
Why?
Well, because it's kind of like pickling things, right?
It's like pickled eggs, pickled asparagus.
So it's one of those leftover things that you used to have, like, at sea.
Yeah, yeah, 100%.
And I think it came along at a time when vinegar would have been like, whoa, that's a real taste.
You know what I mean?
Like, that's back when they were boiling meat so it didn't kill you.
So, you know, I think it's sort of one of those things that, like, relative to the time, it would have been quite fancy.
You're eating a fish from the sea?
What?
I live several hundred miles inland.
Where would that come from?
Ain't no toasted ravioli at sea.
Exactly.
None of that.
That's the thing.
So that's what I'm saying.
I hope that you're ready for Steve's All-Star Weekend episode.
Because really, there is some stuff to talk about.
We could get into trade deadline stuff.
There's plenty of time for that.
It's boring.
So much time.
What we need.
Do you want to play maybes forever?
Or do you want to take a play?
Because that's the next month.
Definitely happened.
Yeah.
So we're going to get into Steve's All-Star stories for most of the show.
Plus, a little thing from The Athletic on a player's poll.
I noticed something.
Oh, that.
Jesse noticed something.
I don't know what Jesse noticed, but he noticed what I noticed.
You haven't noticed it yet.
I haven't had time.
Jesse's got something he needs to point out.
I need to point out a little thingy.
First, we must award crowns, gentlemen.
And let me just say this.
If you live life generously, life will treat you royally.
Would you not agree?
Oh, you know what?
Jesse?
I probably would.
I would agree with that.
I think that's not fake news.
Factual information.
Why not put yourself in a frame of crown royal?
Because we're going to talk about who wore the crown.
Where we, with the help of you, recognize one Leaf player who gives it all for the blue and white.
Because it's our town, it's our crown.
It's not about what you have, but what you have to give.
Let's crown the Leaf that lives generously by giving it all for the team.
Brought to you by our friends at Crown Royal.
Live generously and life will treat you royally.
Let's get into it, Stephen A. Dangle.
Stephen A. Dangle.
I'm going to give my crown to Mitchell Marner.
Because he was robbed during that final competition.
That was ridiculous.
I didn't see whether or not he actually was robbed.
but I choose to believe that he was.
He was not.
It went over.
He was robbed because he's a Toronto Maple Leaf
and they have a bias against Toronto
because they don't want to seem like
they have a bias for Toronto.
Yeah, we've got to put the Blackhawks
and Patrick Kane in more things.
You're talking about the shot thing from the stands?
None of us even know what the competition was called.
I was there, I covered it.
So they showed the replay on the TV
and it went over.
I literally just called it the Dude Perfect event.
I don't know.
It is a Dude Perfect event, yeah.
No, I have no idea what it's called.
I'm sure I can look it up.
I'm sure you could.
Do you mind?
And just because I would love to know what they actually ended up going with the NHL dude perfect brought to you by enterprise question
I don't know was it exciting life
The yeah, I mean yeah like that part of it that the skills competition. I'll go no
I just want to know that particular that particular part of it um
It got exciting okay, it got exciting difficult part, so I was reading some tweets from people
I was way way way high up some people who were lower like
You know about level with where they were shooting from we're complaining that they couldn't see the puck
yeah, and I imagine that to be a hundred percent true because even though it was orange like
You're watching it go across through a sea of people who are wearing all sorts of different colors
So I do think they would just light it up like yeah, they had those
Dim the lights make it glow. Yeah
It's the one time I'm down for a glowing puck.
Why?
What the hell, right?
I don't know.
There's something there.
Everyone was talking about how shitty that was.
There's something there.
The whole thing should have been in the dark.
The target should have been glow-in-the-dark.
It should have been like glow-in-the-dark mini-golf.
We'll get to the targets.
The targets were terrible.
We need to talk about the targets.
What an unnecessary piece of whatever that was.
Anyway, what do they call it?
It's called Shooting Stars.
The winner was Patrick Kane.
He won the Shooting Stars competition.
I don't hate that.
I don't hate that.
No, it's all right.
It would have made more sense if it was glowing.
Shooting stars.
Make it actually a shooting star.
Everybody says how crappy it was.
I respect the hell out of the NHL for trying something different.
Good for them.
Because we're on them about that all the time.
They finally did it.
And yeah, sure, it could use some improving, but who can't?
Who among us is perfect?
Hoomst.
Hoomst.
Hoomst.
So I would say good on the NHL for doing something different.
It was nice.
And good on Mitch Marner for winning it.
I'm going to say...
He did.
I'm going to say, my crown is going to Mr. Austin Matthews, who put the Leafs playoff run, because it's going to be a run.
Oh, yeah.
They're going to have to put a run on it.
Yep.
Who put that ahead of actually appearing in the All-Star game.
Yes.
Because right up until...
He had the brace.
He had the brace.
And he still went to all the events and that sort of thing.
I shook his brace.
If he had wanted to, he could have stayed home.
But he didn't.
And he wanted to go to all the events.
So you could tell he wanted to be there.
But I love and respect the fact that he said, you know what?
Not going to do this.
We got to make the playoffs.
Otherwise, it's going to be a disaster.
And I'll never be able to go on social media again.
So please, God, let this wrist heal.
And that's what we're all thinking.
So Austin Matthews, you get my crown for your devotion to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Thank you, sir.
Freddie made a couple saves at the All-Star game where I'm like, I guess he's healthy.
Yeah, he did look good.
I was like, if he is hurting, it's not the groin.
Yeah, he was really helping out Pam Beasley on the bench.
Yeah, that was like, wait, who is that?
Oh, yes, yes, yes.
Jesse, your crown.
Can I put a small Mark McGuire, Sammy Sosa, tainted home runs asterisk on your crown?
Damn, okay, sure.
Why?
What happened?
Because a small thing about Austin Matthews showing up to All-Star Weekend.
If he did not show up for All-Star Weekend, he would have been suspended for the first game back.
Not if he's injured.
No, but then he couldn't play the first game back.
You have to show up for the festivities.
so it's the Nathan McKinnon special
like last year
the narrative that he did it
out of the kindness of his heart
is kind of untrue
he did it out of the kindness
of wanting to play
tonight versus the press
right
which is his devotion
to the Toronto Maple Leafs
which further
reinforces my point
ladies and gentlemen
thank you
I'm right
and right again
wow
how right it is to be me
Adam is always wild
I like that
Adam is always wild
always contains an A
and a W
true
Jesse who is your crowd going to
I have to give it to the man
Who is not afraid of
35 plus Twitter
He fearlessly put up a
Picture of himself on the beach
To Instagram
During his week off because he doesn't
Care if you have sunglasses
And up the selfie chin
For your profile picture
William Nylander will post as many
Beach boy pics to his
Instagram as he wants
and is unafraid of your scrutiny.
Oh, you mean like the angry adults who are like,
I don't like him because he's Swedish and hot.
You can't be doing that because you're not focused on the game.
William Nylander should have a tip jar if he's going to serve like that.
That picture, my goodness.
Toasted ravioli wasn't the only snack available on the All-Star break.
I was looking at that and thinking, damn, William Nylander is a man now.
Is that okay to say?
He's been a man.
I know, but before he was like, you do, when you're 18, 19, 20,
You're sort of like you're like a man, but you're like a boy boy man. Now. He's like man man now that makes
Yeah, lots of sense. You know what I mean? Well, yeah, he's gronk. He's friggin. He's like low-key
Viking Harry. Yeah. Yeah, which is a manly type of Harry. Yeah. No, that's it. It's a country kind of chair
Comfortable. Oh, yeah pickaxes that is friggin
From like to sail over to the movie where Clive Owen was King Arthur
Roman King Arthur, by the way
Yes, and I was like, all my ancestry in one.
All my problematic ancestry, all in one.
It's crazy.
It's crazy.
You could be Italian twice.
You know that, right?
Wow.
Wow, I'm full.
I mean, the Italians did kind of conquer Rome.
Fun fact, they found a governor in northern England.
How the f-
This is crazy.
How do you know this?
Your definition of a fun fact is different than my definition of a fun fact.
This is an Adam Wilde fun fact?
Fun fact.
So he was reading a book about murder.
No, but seriously.
So they found, Rome was such a diverse empire that they found a guy who was born in Syria
who was a Roman governor in Northern England, like underneath Scotland.
Wow, there's a lot going on there.
Isn't that crazy?
So he's a guy who was born.
How did they know that?
Because it said where he was from on his tombstone.
Oh, okay.
So they found that, or his marking or whatever.
And they found his mansion, and of course, I think back then, if you were rich enough,
you just got buried in your own yard.
so it talks about
how the fact that
this guy came from
I was thinking
like a Syrian dude
back then
like it's not
an easy flight now
imagine
that's several months
on the road
yeah how do you get there
yeah
but that's what
used to happen
like these guys
would be like
all around the empire
he could be anything
he had level 4 bonding
with his horse
totally
that is a Red Dead
Redemption joke
that sounds very weird
anyway
that's a story for you
well I
alright
To wrap up my crown, William Nylander deserves to enjoy a crown on that beach.
That's right.
Because he is a man.
Because he is a man.
Nylander.
Nope.
Nope.
Keep working on that.
Put that back in the workshop.
You'll be good.
Hey, that's Who Wore the Crown for this week.
Brought to you as always by Crown Royal.
Next time the puck drops, why not?
Why not?
Live generously and treat your Leafs crew to a Crown Royal old-fashioned Stephen A. Dangle.
Tell us about All-Star Weekend.
Oh, boy.
Because, let's be honest, you're not, under the best of circumstances, flying is not maybe your favorite pastime.
No.
And so, with everything going on in the Middle East in the weeks leading up, you are not, like, thrilled.
No, seriously, this isn't the reason to be concerned.
Steve was like, well, there could be a war.
Well, no, and, okay, so I'll just straight up.
Talk a little closer to your microphone.
Yeah, sorry, I'll just tear it all down.
Jake B. Leaf's gotten in trouble from some of Twitter
Basically talking about how he doesn't like to travel to the States
That's okay, you don't have to travel to the States
No, I know, a lot of Americans jumped on that
You're not talking from an experience that you can relate to
As a Canadian, I
Listen, I like it once I'm there
And everyone I've ever met is friendly
But like, for example
We were walking past an incident at one point
Where there were four cop cars
And I'm like
Might be a shoot up
Like
Oh my god
Legit
What?
Legit
I don't know
That's just anxiety man
Yeah
Yeah well I got it
And a lot of people do
And listen
I don't always feel the safest
Right
I can tell you
I don't feel unsafe necessarily
I feel safer here
And this is home
Yeah that's fair
But I don't feel this way in Vancouver
Or Montreal
Or Scotland
Yeah
It's a different environment
When you go down to the states
For sure
Like I was down in Buffalo
For a Bills game
In September
And like their security guys just care around assault rifles. Yeah, you'll see them when you're walking the stadium
There's the guard in the stadium. There's like regular security guys. Yeah here
Yeah, but they have laws where they're allowed to carry assault rifle. No gun stickers at convenience stores
I'm like, oh dope dope dope. I wasn't gonna bring it but sure. Yeah. Yeah. Thanks for the reminder, right?
Anyway, St. Louis was great. I liked it. Um, and it was
Like as a Canadian I feel like step two
Like, oh shoot, the stereotype about
Canadians is that we're polite
And then they're like, guess what, you're in the Midwest
And we're gonna out-polite you, and it was like a polite-off
And it was, oh, we're
That would have made you sweat, yeah, for sure
Oh my god, yeah, so much
So much of that, so much
Going over the top, thank you so much
Thank you, that's, oh, you're so helpful
Or whatever, or I'm trying to think of
It's not thank you, thank you so much
Appreciate you
Really appreciate it, yeah
Yeah.
Hey, man, you like St. Louis?
Yeah, I like St. Louis.
All right, you like it, I love it.
And I'm like, okay.
Damn.
Damn.
Okay, shit.
Okay.
I actually had that happen.
The Midwest is good for that.
Tennessee, too?
Whenever you, I'm not sure that you have, but if you ever meet someone from Iowa, I
have.
And you're like, damn, I guarantee you walk away as going, that is a nice person.
For sure.
That's a very nice person.
I don't know why, but people from Iowa seem to have really great manners.
I believe it.
Oh, also, and many St. Louis people were sure to mention this, especially at the All-Star
game when I did that meet-up.
St. Louis, not near Chicago.
Not at all near Chicago.
I was wrong.
You said that the other day?
I don't know what I was looking at.
I think because they play each other a lot.
I don't know what I was looking at.
Is that what it is?
Not close to the same place.
Not even nearby.
The same time zone?
Nearby on a plane.
The same time zone?
Yeah, but they're like...
Steve, it's like a five, six hour drive.
You were talking like it's commute.
Right.
It is not.
You saw the arch, right?
The arch.
Never go to the arch.
Why?
There's nothing in there, right?
Go outside.
Look at it from the outside.
Wonderful.
Yeah.
It's so.
It's not like.
Okay, CN Tower.
This is like the main thing that's in the skyline for so long.
Do not go to the freaking arch.
No, I've heard this story before.
The CN Tower, it's got this sturdy, doesn't make much noise elevator.
And you go and it's terrifying because you see all the way up, but it's not noisy and you don't hear the environment or anything
the literally I
Had to get shoved out of the way by one of the sports and people I was with the producer drew shoved me out of the
Way, and I'm like whoa. I'm just standing in front of the wall
He's like no
That's the door to get into the pod so that it's the door is off the ground and it's like
Jesse literally could not have gotten in this pot. I hate to interrupt you you could not have gotten in this place
Are you telling me that you can go up the arch?
You can go up the arch.
No, sorry.
I'm getting there.
There's a door to go into a pod that takes you up the arch.
Okay.
You don't go around it, though, like a roller coaster.
No, but it goes alarmingly fast, and it picks up speed, and it looks like it's made of
paper mache from the inside, and you hear everything.
Oh, but it's okay.
You get a beautiful, scenic look of St. Louis on your way up.
No, you don't.
you get a look at the rusty rickety staircase on the way up. It is one of the most terrifying
goddamn experiences. Don't do it. Just take a picture of the arch. It's beautiful. Don't go
up it. You don't need to. And once you're up at the observation deck, it's not giant. There's a
very low ceiling. It's not like you're walking around. Ooh, there's a glass floor. No, it is
fucking terrifying. And when you lean next to the window, I could swear I felt the thing sway.
Don't go up the damn arch
Fuck the arch
Wow
I thought the arch was just something you looked at
I didn't think you could actually go up there
You can go up it if you dare
Okay this is what we got
So all four of us we cram into this paper mache pod
It like seriously looks like it's at least four years old
And we're all crammed in there
And we're already like
Like nervous laughs at everything
As our doors are closing there was a full grown man
In his forties
He just noped
He walked by us and just went nope
Paid for a ticket and everything, and he just went, nope, not getting in it.
What?
I think he went to go get a refund.
I love that you crammed four of you in it, too.
Nope, and slam.
The door shuts.
And we're all like, oh, fuck.
Wow.
Oh, I didn't like it.
I didn't like it at all.
Sounds like it would be a lot of fun.
Yeah.
How many people have died on the St. Louis Arch?
Sorry.
Adam would have had a blast watching me.
Jesse would have had a blast.
I couldn't fit.
No, you could not have fit.
I couldn't go on that.
What was that newest ride at Wonderland?
Yeah, you were too tall for that.
I was too tall for that.
The mountain one
Oh no
Not behemoth
The other one
Jesse comes all the way
Out to this park
To shoot a video
And he's too bloody tall
To get on it
Leviathan
No it wasn't Leviathan
No it wasn't
Oh man
Whatever
I can look it up
And it's a fun ride too
And I was like
When is that a thing
You couldn't go on
Like Mindbuster
I've been on Mindbuster before
I can't go
Even the one where you
Dangle your leg
It used to be called
Vort Gun
But then they changed
All the names
After they lost the rights
No the bat's the one
You're laying down
I can go on that one
But whatever you're dangling
I can't do that one
anymore. This is too tall. Anyway, I definitely
couldn't go in the arch. No, you couldn't.
And we were talking about, like, we were
floating around the idea of, like, oh, let's
ask, like, if an NHL player will do it with
us, and then we're thinking about, like,
dude, there's, like, four or five players
here we could have done that with. Like, imagine
if we had asked for Victor Hedman.
And he's...
It probably would have snapped. Yeah. Under the weight.
And I was, like, I'm on
the way up. I'm, like, I'm gonna die. I'm gonna eat nothing
but salads for the next week. Oh, my God, like,
Oh, I was terrified of the damn arch.
Around the arch?
Like, the area around the arch.
Is that terrible, too?
No, it's fine.
Or is it...
Okay, so it's in the city, like, around the arch.
It's not far from anything.
It's not far from the ballpark.
Is there any, like, stores or anything?
Like, you can get arch merchandise or arch shot glasses?
I think so.
I just...
Nope.
I just...
As soon as I wanted to kiss the ground, I was terrified of the damn gateway arch.
So he's afraid of the flight.
Now he's afraid of the arch.
I'm not afraid of flying.
I just don't enjoy it. Oh, okay. That's all it's uncomfortable. That's all okay. Fair enough. It's uncomfortable takes forever. It's hot. It's cold
I don't like it. No
But then they give you drinks and it's fine. Yeah, he prefers for his home. How much drinking did you do on the plane?
Not a ton we did producer drew and I split a bottle of pink Whitney
Did this give that to you he did not but we did we spoke at the end of the skills competition nice
Did you challenge him to a fight like you were going to last episode?
Yeah, man, I forgot. I didn't challenge him to a fight. He disarmed me with
Man, that guy's gorgeous. I'll tell you in person and just the way he looks at you. I'm like
Well only if I could fall in love right now. Wow
Miss Nassie is a gorgeous man. If it wasn't for Mrs. Dangle. If it wasn't for Mrs. Dangle and other factors
So you'd be Mr. Bissonnette then? Like why not? Sure. I'll be whatever
Whatever he asked me to be.
Honey.
I'll be honey.
That's funny.
So you did talk to him?
Yeah, I did talk to him.
Great guy.
Well, you guys have worked together before, haven't you?
Yes, so here's the funny thing.
He seemed to know all about me, except for the fact that we had met.
Oh.
He did not remember that.
Yeah, it's understandable.
That's okay.
Yeah.
And also, Pink Whitney is not as advertised.
I thought it was like vodka mixed with pink lemonade.
No, it's strong as shit.
It's 30%.
Oh, wow, you can drink it straight, but I super don't recommend that sounds delicious. Yeah, so sounds like it's just vodka. Yeah
Split a bottle. Oh, yeah, I was like
Drew's like no, it's fine. I'm like no this is like more than drinking just de Sirona straight. You know that right? Yeah
Yeah, each cup of this is like two cups of wine like
Damn yeah, it was we had a good time. Okay
What else
What else about it
You gotta
I don't know
So that's all
Like the stuff around
Yeah yeah
I mean we're saving
The all-star stuff
So here's the deal
So your goals
In going down
Sportsnet lays out
A list of things
Can you talk about
A little bit
Let's start with that
For some context
So we're pulling out
From the all-star game
What are Steve's goals
Going into this
Particular weekend
Well it was
It was
Like many events
I've been to
Where you go in
With a plan
And it gets shot
Immediately
Right
So I said on this
Very show
I'm like
Yeah, I'm gonna be on the bench for the skills competition, which obviously did not happen and we found out the night before
Does 12 hours was it for six billion dollars and get you that? Oh Adam. It was 5.2. Oh, yes
Yeah, don't be ridiculous American. Yes. Yeah, so more than six billion, but anyway, I don't know
No, but I don't oh we flippin absolutely talk about
Listen if Tim and Sid are talking about it making fun of it. We can do okay
Oh, it's like Stormy Norm Rumak used to yell and scream about Roy Halladay
because he wouldn't come on the radio station.
He's like, we own the Blue Jays!
He used to get so mad about that.
Stormy Norm Rumak on the van, 590.
Yeah, so that plan got shot to hell.
But instead of being on the bench for the skills competition,
I got to do the red carpet for the skills competition.
Is that where you did it to him?
Did what to who?
Oh, you know, I had to do it to him.
So when did the decision come to wear your face on your shirt?
Like honestly five minutes before we left. That's amazing. Yeah left the hotel or left here. The hotel.
Okay, that's great. The hotel to go to the skills competition. That's a good call. It was a great call.
But no sorry the day before that might have been even more wild because that was the media car wash day.
Okay, so for anybody that doesn't understand what a media car wash is, essentially, Steve.
Basically, all the players are just herded around
by media people by like team representatives and just shoved into
different rooms and asked to do different things right so we've done
this they do the same thing with movies too so we had a car wash once where I
was on for Suicide Squad and essentially they they took the cast cuz the cast is
so that's a big cast right yeah so they split them up into four rooms and then
you would just kind of tour the room essentially right five minutes here five
minutes there five minutes and then the only one worth even going to was the
will smith room because he is amazing um so you so the stars were in their own rooms no no no go
to them well yeah so the stars were in their own so they brought them to us so they brought yeah
because there's more players than there is probably media isn't there uh like there's a
lot of players there i don't know about that maybe anyway it was probably about equal because they're
torn between so many and just to emphasize digital not exactly top priority our room was listed as
Sportsnet 2.
That's fair.
Yeah.
No, it is fair.
That's totally fair.
But like the players were actually staying at the hotel as well.
So like it was funny, Austin Matthews' mom and dad.
Who you've met before.
Well, they were walking by our room and I just happened to be looking out the door.
And they both look in and they do that thing where they walk by the door and then shove
their head back and they were like, hey!
Oh, that's so cool.
So that was funny.
So we had to split a room with, did you see the opener for the, was it the skills competition or the All-Star game?
The one with Jon Hamm.
Oh, yeah.
Hi, I'm Jon Hamm.
And all the players were mouthing like, wow, I'm so good.
I'm probably the best hockey person ever.
Right, yeah.
Everybody could be like Jon Hamm tonight, which was really funny.
I think they played it both nights.
Okay.
Yeah, very funny.
So they shot that in our room.
They got the players to mouth Jon Hamm's thing,
and they played it over again, the three, two, one.
Wow, I'm so good.
And that was the warm-up for me, which was terrifying
because the first person we had in the room that did that
was Frederick Anderson, who did not get it.
Oh.
Freddie doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would.
No, and it wasn't that he was being a stickler.
No.
I mean, he is dry, but he's Danish.
That's just how he comes across
I think he's
Freddie's shown enough personality that we know he's not
I'm not saying he's void of personality
I just don't think this would be his thing
But he didn't get it
He's like wait so if it's my inner thoughts
Why am I mouthing it? Why am I saying it?
So he's very literal
He was very literal and he did not get it
And it took forever for him to get it right
Poor guy
And then even on the way out he's talking to the Leafs media person
Like but you know what I mean right?
Like why would I be mouthing it?
Why would I be mouthing it?
It was really funny.
We got, oh, we had like four players come through the room in the first six hours.
So it was a lot of hurry up and wait.
Well, sorry, it was a lot of wait.
And then the final hour and a half, we had about nine players, I think.
So that was a lot of hurry up.
And we're talking about like, like.
Again, I'm going to ask you to get closer to your microphone.
Sorry, sorry, sorry.
We're talking about like Nathan McKinnon walking in, asking him half a dozen questions.
He walks out of the room where you see Quinn Hughes is waiting
And then he does the same thing
And then it's Tristan Jari
And then it's Eric Stahl
And then it's Jonathan Huberdeau
Some big names, man
Rapid fire, yeah
It's weird
I don't get to do these things very often
And when I do, it's
Holy fuck, you get to talk to 20 guys
It's insane
I don't know what is going to make it into each video
Because we shot at least 12, 15 videos worth of stuff
We obviously had the dog video go up
That's a good number
Yeah, oh yeah, it's a great number
They're getting 15 videos out of the weekend.
That's real good.
We're happy about it.
That's rare.
I discovered about myself that I'm a lot more confident than I used to be
because I'm, like, chirping a little bit.
Oh, yeah.
So we had Tristan Jari come in, who was just the smiliest guy ever,
just huge smile on his face the whole time, but was clearly terrified.
Like, I don't know if he's used to this sort of attention.
Sure.
Because he was the Penguins, like, backup slash third heading into the season.
And you could tell he's like, yeah, I'm with the Ulster game.
Smiley.
and all his answers though like smiley but like one word or one sentence and they weren't sure
yeah and a lot of that or like staring for five seconds and then answering one word so the fifth
or sixth question something like that was so what's your uh what's your all-star skill that's
not hockey and again smiling and staring ahead and after about half a dozen seconds of silence i go
Is it answering questions?
Oh no!
Steven!
Just
Just joking around with him
How did I edit that properly? That could be very funny
He took it very well. No one
No one. So I will
I will say this though, and I will call
this out on the show. They got some big cojones
One of the videos
that we were hoping to do
that has supposedly been kiboshed
that I am going to fight for
no reason to kibosh this video none was who do you pick to win the stanley cup and you can't pick
your team what's wrong with that nothing is wrong with that and every player answered it and i don't
know who kiboshed it but like i'm like just tell us who it was so that we can take them out of the
video if they're uncomfortable right but like oh you don't think it was the league it was probably
one of the players who was like yeah well i think it was one of the players who told the league
There's no reason
To cut that video
It's a great video
And I don't want to
Throw any players
Under the bus
In case we don't use them
And they're like
Oh it was that one
Are there tampering rules?
What do you mean?
Like are you not allowed
To say positive things
About other teams
In the NHL?
You're absolutely allowed
To say positive things
About other teams
That's weird
It's not like
Steve didn't say
Hey what team would you
Like to be on
In the cup
Other than your own
Yeah
That would be tampering
Some players pick teams
In their division
Because they play them a lot
And they know they're good
Other teams were like
Oh, I better better pick a team in another conference. There was a player. I won't say who who
Said and that this was a clever answer. They go well
Based on last year who's in last right now and I go Detroit and he goes them
That's the formula that's
That Cassian say the flames I
Wish I didn't get to talk to Brady Kachuk on the red carpet. I didn't get Matthew. I was hoping to get Matthew
Um...
Seeing Keith was cool.
Uh, Keith...
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I didn't get to talk to him.
Didn't get to talk to McDavid.
Um, but, uh, yeah, the red carpet comes the next day.
Uh, oh, and I will say this.
I, uh, so the women showed up last.
Um, we've been there since, like, 9.30.
It's 6 o'clock, something like that.
Wow, long day.
Close to 6 o'clock.
Yeah, it was a long day.
But I'm not going to say I was tired, because I'm not allowed to say that on this show.
I was fresh as a daisy and eager to work, as I always am.
And, no, they showed up last.
Can't complain when you're living the dream, right?
Am I right?
Come on, boys.
Pop your wheel.
Anyway.
Yo, Pink Witt?
Pink Witt?
Anyway.
So, it was, I think it was Rebecca Johnston and Kendall Coyne Schofield.
And there was the conversation, like, hey, man, we got enough stuff.
Do you want to tear down and whatever?
And I go, no, no, no, no, no.
We're going to wait for them because we heard they were near.
And, like, there was a conversation because now we're getting into overtime territory.
And is there a budget for this?
And this is, like, I don't know if it's a Sportsnet thing or a league thing.
It's a union thing.
I don't.
It's just a union thing.
Yeah.
I don't think it was any particular company.
I think it's a union thing.
And they were in the other room talking to I don't know who.
And I'm out in the hall
Just having a sip of water
And I'm wearing my lav mic on my shirt
Waiting to interview them
And someone just came
And literally took the mic off my shirt
And they're like we're out of time
So yeah
I like insisted I'm like no I want to talk to them
But they're already they're striking the set
What are you going to do
That sounds like a union hard out
And you can't fight that
There's nothing you can do
I really wanted to talk
It really does.
So then there was, now I'm trying to remember what day was which.
So all this car wash stuff happened on Friday during the day?
Thursday.
Thursday during the day, okay.
This happened Thursday.
So then Friday, what happens?
Friday is the All-Star Game.
Did you do anything Thursday night?
It was competition.
Thursday night, did you go party?
I think that was the Pink Whitney night.
That was Pink Whitney.
That was bar down?
No, that was the next night.
Okay, let's stick to Thursday night then.
Yeah, well, Thursday night was just me and producer Drew and Kaylee with social just shooting the shit and drinking pink Whitney
And that's great. Yes, and we didn't have an early wake-up call or anything and you know
We'll drink your water before bed and all that responsible stuff
And
So next next day's the skills competition. I wear my stupid face. Yeah, I look
Absolutely ridiculous, but there's no I think it was the right way to go like I was there was no way
I was gonna look well-dressed. Mm-hmm. I am wearing my DC's that I'm wearing right now. I'm getting sure mercilessly for it still
So I'll wear a blazer and a shirt with my stupid face. It's gonna be great. So we're waiting there
I didn't bring a winter jacket because didn't want to carry around all this stuff
folks
St. Louis is cold
It is so friggin cold and I stood outside with just a blazer and t-shirt for like two hours
It's like the top five coldest I've ever been
Like other than like when I was working outside at the zoo and standing out there for like eight hours
In the in the fall and New Year's Eve a couple times
Just frozen through every molecule of my body
So I'm looking at the picture right now and everyone in the background has toques. Yes and winter jacket
Did no one imagine you were gonna be outside or how did this happen?
If anyone has footage no and that was another thing like I didn't know we were gonna be outside the whole time
So, if anyone had footage of the red carpet, if any of you were standing behind me, you would probably have footage of me, like, literally chattering, like, chattering teeth, like, shivering from every, and I just, like, tensed up whenever the athletes came, and I was like, just stay still.
Whose blazer is that?
That's mine, that's one of my ice surfing jerseys, uh, jerseys, blazers.
Oh, no way, it looks very nice.
Yeah, man, they make us snazzy there.
I mean, you would have seen that jacket if you watched ice surfing already.
Tuesday you know yeah for sure on Twitter Adam effect if you paused Adam would would recognize the juror I'm sure
So we got oh
And it was another missed opportunity with the women so they were coming down the
Or no, they didn't come down the red carpet first the first was the mascots ah and there was great interviews. Yes, there was boomy
That's got to make sounds now they went straight to radio. Oh really yeah, they make sounds there was oh god
I can't remember who it was, but it was like
Like I can't even remember who it was I stared into gritty's eyes
That's
genuinely scary
It's really scary because he's like seven feet tall and has these huge unblinking eyes and when he stops moving
It's as if to say bitch what?
Punch you in the back. All right. No one's listening. It's just us. Okay
Did you meet the guy inside the costume?
I didn't meet any of the people inside the mascots.
Damn it.
No.
I wanted to, sadly.
Still no one's listening.
Is Gritty thick?
Yo, Gritty's dummy thick.
Oh.
Yeah.
What?
No one's listening.
My boy is thick!
Did he admit to socking a 13-year-old?
Damn, boy!
Did he admit to socking a 13-year-old in the face?
No, it was in the back of the head, wasn't it?
And then DDT-ing him in front of his dad.
He was from that goofy skit on YouTube
I'll fuckin' do it again
I'll do it again
By the way, that story made me laugh
It's like, you grew up
You're raising your kid in Philadelphia
He's gonna get punched in the head sometime
Right?
Yeah
Man, like
Printed on the back of the ticket
Mascot might punch you
Yeah
Billy, like, are you
Are you in your mind?
What are you, nuts?
Also, people dug up his Facebook profile
And his profile picture
Was that one with Gritty
So he couldn't have been that choked about it
That's fucked up
Wait, the dad or the kid?
The kid
No, no, the dad
I was about to say, someone dug up a 13-year-old's
13-year-olds don't have Facebook, come on
I was about to say
I sure hope not
Wait, yeah, that was the most messed up part
Right
Yeah, for sure
If you said they dug up his Snapchat, it would have been creepy
But also, that's where you'd expect him to be
Wow, sleuthing
Yeah
No, yeah, so anyway
Yeah, had a great conversation with Grady
Then the women come down
I point at Laura Fortino
I point right at her.
Hey, former Clarkson Cupcake, Laura Fortino, our teammate.
Yeah, and remember, what does Fortino mean in Italian?
Sick player.
Just like I told her.
And I point right at her down the red carpet.
And she walks by.
Well, yeah, you've got to fight for everyone to get their attention.
And NBC and Pierre Maguire are standing next to us.
Right next to us.
And there's Renaud Lavoie on the other side.
Did you pat Pierre's butt?
Yeah, let's uh, I did not introduce myself. Did he know you? No. No, I don't know or care.
I don't think he has the internet. I don't. If he did, he wouldn't get his own facts wrong about the time he coached Hartford.
Remember that last year? It's like, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.
Like people put out an article with like five points about a 30 second segment.
I had to like rewrite parts of my book because I'm like, oh I skipped a year.
Like, I thought I missed a part, so I at least had the time to-
You can't track your games, though, on the internet.
Right.
Like, the way he could.
If only there was like a-
If only there was a source-
Interview Steve Did DB.
Like, Steve Did DB.
Yeah, here's- nope, you've spoken to this guy before.
You've met Tristan Jari.
What? I didn't know.
Here's this very public league that he could've looked at.
But anyway, so you didn't meet Pierre.
I point right at Laura Fortino, and she even goes,
Me?
And does the point at her, but Natalie Spooner was standing next to her.
an expert. And Natalie Spooner's like,
she's on SportsCenter all the time.
She's one of the
I would say top five biggest names
in women's hockey.
Top three. So she thought I was
pointing at Spooner.
And that's who we ended up getting, Spooner. And I'm like,
okay, I'll ask Spooner three questions and then
Fortino will come. And Fortino was long
gone. And I was just
DMing with her
today. And she's like, oh my god, sorry, I
thought you were pointing at Spooner.
So that's why she just walked away. That's hilarious.
Laura's by the way
One of the nicest people
She was one of the nicest
She's on the Adam Wilde
List of nicest people
Wow she's on the
Adam Wilde
Elder Scrolls
Of nicest people
It's a bit long
You know she was wicked
To us
So cool
Wicked to us
And we lost
To Natalie Spooner's team
Damn
I know
In the final
I know
But we had a good
Good time
We had a good go of it
Talked to Victor Hedman
Who is so much man
There's a lot of man there
There's so much man
A lot of handsome
From what I understand
A lot of handsome
My say hi to Adam moment
was uh uh brady kachuk's walking up and i'm trying to come up with something like
jokey to say that everyone that we can maybe put in like a compilation video
and so for brady kachuk i go austin how are you because he was replacing austin and he just kind
of looked at me and thought i fucked up oh he thought i just made a mistake oh okay you know
what it's funny i watched the david amber i don't know did you catch the david amber interview with
the Kachucks and Keith?
No. David Amber, by the way,
has some really great shit
coming up this month.
It's a great interview
and you get a sense
of who each of the guys are.
I know Brady is a shit
disturber on the ice, but you can tell he's
a really sweet guy. So he probably
legitimately was like, oh, he screwed up.
Oh, poor guy.
Grab me by the shoulder, you're
going to be okay. His brother's not innocent at all.
No. No.
No, no. So Brady did not get it, and it's funny because like even after like the whole digital crew I was with like
Oh, I don't think he got it Steve. I'm like no shit he didn't get it!
So like immediately after the interview as I'm internalizing my oof they all just oof
Nooo
Supportive. That's nice. Met Austin Matthews, finally. Mm-hmm. The picture is amazing on your Instagram by the way. It's amazing and
And this is my insider reporting. He extends his right hand to shake mine
And I gave him the limpest handshake of all time because that is a precious hand
That it's got a brace on it, but it was it was in that moment
I'm like how hurt is this hand right now?
So I grabbed it and twisted it just to see and no it was just like a very dainty
Handshake okay, that was very respectful. Thank you for your devotion to the franchise. We appreciate it
I just, you know, I just do my part.
I just do my thing.
Oh, I got to talk to Xavier Woods from WWE.
That was sick.
Cool.
He just happened to be on the red carpet for no reason.
Jon Hamm, what a pro.
Like, just high-fiving everyone as he's running by, didn't do a single interview.
Yo, that guy's living his best flippin' life now.
He really, really is.
After Mad Men, he is, like, just partying.
I watched him, Bridesmaids last night, randomly, because it was on the movie network.
So good.
Oh, my God.
He's the best character in that whole thing.
He's incredible.
He's incredible.
What character is he?
I forget.
He's the douchebag.
He's the douchebag she's dating at the beginning.
Yeah.
With the Porsche.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
But can your boyfriend do this?
Yeah, I think he can.
I won't tell you what he did, but you should watch the movie.
It's very funny.
Yeah, I forgot about that.
I haven't seen that in a long time.
I love John Hamm.
Yeah, he's amazing.
Americans wouldn't know this, but he's got these Canadian commercials where he's pretending
to be Canadian and ordering food.
Oh, skip the dishes.
Skip the dishes, yeah.
Brandon, throw me the shirt!
He's like talking about how Canadian he is
He's like, I like this thing
And I just ordered myself a moose jaw
And like, you know, he's just
I don't know, I find those commercials really funny
He plays a spectacular douchebag
Yes
Oh yeah
He does
He really does
And he's gotta do it
Well, I was gonna say he's gotta do it more
I think he's figured it out
Like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Like, he's just so good at being that character
Yeah
He's so good at being just an asshole
And like Madman's just a 60s douchebag
You know?
Yeah
Yeah, instead of instead of the stoic douchebag like he needs to be over the talk. I'm I'm Jon Hamm. Mm-hmm
Yeah, Brandon throw me the shirt
There yeah, so you so Austin the Austin interview went well and the report well all of them went well
But they were all like they were all short like they always are on a red when she when Shea Weber's face
Hints that he's getting cold and it's time to wrap up guess what you do wrap up you wrap the fuck
Yeah, so I got I got Shea Weber both days, and he was
Sort of like yeah, like like you could see in his face like you got me yesterday. Let me go
What else you gonna get right you already talked the question I wanted from him
Was we're one of the videos is gonna be do you think Ovechkin can break Gretzky's record? Okay?
It's very interesting answers
titillating and
My shot's better. I'm Shea Weber.
Yeah, fuck.
How many guys on those red carpets knew who you were?
I think just Austin.
That was it?
I think just Austin and Spooner.
And Spooner, obviously.
Well, you know her.
Yeah, so I would say just Austin then.
How many?
Well, I've spoken to Victor Hedman before, but I wouldn't expect him to remember me.
Okay.
Interesting.
Now, did Austin come up and say Steve Dangle?
No.
No.
No, I don't, because I don't need that validation
Like, you know me, right?
Like, I know your parents, I know your mom
Yeah, I didn't need that
No, that's embarrassing to ask for
Do you know me?
Has someone ever done that to you, though, on a red carpet?
Something like, they popped up to you and been like
I'm just, well
That was only my second ever red carpet
Because I did the Hall of Fame
One year
But no, the only guy who's ever been like
Like, hey, my family watches your stuff
was Jeremy Williams after a Marley's game once.
Oh, that was cool.
Yeah, and that was, like, when I was just starting,
so I was like, holy fuck.
Can I tell you the most surreal story
that you just made me think of
that I've never told anyone?
Go for it.
Okay, this is going to be name-drop-a-palooza,
so just forgive me.
Let's do this whole show.
I am your Jon Hamm douchebag on this story, okay?
Me, Adam Lyle.
When I was an entertainment reporter,
not too long ago, a few years ago,
I was on the red carpet for a movie
With Nicole Kidman in it
And I forget what it was
But it was at TIFF
And you know
Same thing with like Steve
Right
You hurry up and wait
You're there three hours early
The carpet locks at this time
And so stand there
And do nothing
Until the last 15 minutes
So you're there for
Imagine you're there
For two hours and 45 minutes
That's how unglamorous
Television is
Everybody's like
Oh it's such a glamorous life
No you go
You freeze your butt off
You're in
Your dress clothes
Not in a
You know
Not in a shirt
Everybody's tired and cranky
But they all get along
Like everybody on a red carpet
It just hangs out and gets along.
There's no competition.
It's like, hey, we're all here together.
Let's get through this.
Yes, yes.
And anyway, generally anyway, except for if you're Access Hollywood.
Different story.
Woo!
Woo!
But, yeah, no, I had a bad experience with Access Hollywood.
But, no, so the back story here, a couple months before, I had gone to Momofuku, which
is a restaurant, the big glassed-in restaurant on University Street in Toronto.
So it's really quite beautiful.
You get to look over the street and whatever.
And they'd rented it out because Keith Urban had come out with an album.
And I'd interviewed Keith Urban talking about his new album.
And we had, I don't know what it was.
Keith Urban is generally known as one of the nicest, most engaging celebrities there is out there.
You can't find a guy, like maybe Will Smith, who I've also interviewed.
And you just kind of like, they just, you walk out feeling like your best friends.
And that's why they're so good at promoting their things.
like Keith Urban will make you into a fan
of the Keith Urban even if you didn't listen to his
album before and so
like genuine guy really nice
thoughtful answers had a great time
shook hands hugged that was it
so this is and I'm not kidding
you six months later that was early
spring this is late summer
early fall and
Nicole Kidman as I told you is
on the carpet and Nicole Kidman is the one
everybody wants because she's no Nicole Kidman
yeah and she'll
talk but it's sort of she's very she's very quiet stuff soft-spoken and you rarely get her for very
long and he is on the carpet with her so he looks at me he goes adam and then he and then he tapped
nicole on the shoulder and said talk to him no way and i was like so you got so i totally because
her husband was like i know him yeah and i totally let him down because i don't think i even asked a
compelling question. I was so shocked by it.
What's it like being Nicole Kidman?
That doesn't sound cool.
Why not?
So anyway, that happened once. I know that's a random aside,
but that actually happened. Alright, well, I'm not going to talk about that.
No, I'm sorry.
You made me think about that. I'm sorry.
Damn.
Have you called up Miss Kidman?
I have not called up Miss Kidman.
Or Mr. Urban.
Or Mr. Keith.
I am grateful for that opportunity. Thank you, Mr. Urban.
Thank you.
The first name too
And like how many
Is like E.T. next to you
Everybody's there and he goes
Adam
On those red carpets where I worked at City
We are small potatoes
You got E.T. Canada, E-Talk
Major shows that are entertainment dedicated shows
And then you've got E.T. in the United States
Which was even bigger
E.Now, Access Hollywood
All the other big shows that you can imagine
They're all there
So we're in position like 10 or 11, you know, it's not it's very rare that you get you get up much higher than that
Yeah, as just sort of like a television network. Anyway
That is my shirt crazy. That's awesome. Yeah, so that I
will now in my name dropping douche bag and
Continue on with Steve Eric stall was delightful. Oh, I wish he would stop dunking on my team every time he plays them
But yeah
That's a vet though
Like that's one of those guys
That's like
I've been to 18,000 of these
I'm gonna do my thing
And I'm gonna get out
Yeah
It might be his last right
Right
Enjoy it
Him and Shea Weber
I think
Were both 2003
Draft
Wow
Yeah
They've been around
They've been around
So they were all great
Red carpet's over
I go inside
I defrost
I thaw
It was fucking freezing
Yeah
And if there's anywhere
You wanna go
After freezing your balls off
It's go into an arena mm-hmm
So here's how I saw the skills competition, and I want to know if you guys had the same experience
And the people at home if when watching it if you had a similar experience
They start with fastest skater so like you want excitement you want to start great
It's like a sandwich you want to start great
You want to put your stuff that you're not too sure about in the middle, and then you want to end great
Right so fastest skater
Couldn't couldn't go wrong fastest skater. It's great works every year
I don't even remember who oh it's Matt Barzell and he ends up beating Connor McDavid upset
And it's a great story either way if Barzell wins or if anyone else wins other than McDavid
It's a big story if McDavid wins
It's holy shit his PCL snapped in half a few months ago
And then he won fastest skater and potentially broke the record and yeah
So that was great. Then it's the save streak, and it gets more and more interesting as it goes.
Freddie is in the lead, and he looks unbeatable, and I'm like, okay, it might be a leaf.
Then Vasilevsky takes the lead, and I'm like, oh boy, reigning Vesna winner.
And then, in front of the home crowd, going last, Jordan Bennington wins it.
Do I look nervous?
Do I look—oh yeah, I got to talk to him, too. He was funny.
At the end of the interview, I go, that was great, Jordan. You didn't look nervous at all.
He goes, yeah, you too. You did a great job.
That's very funny.
And he was wearing under, so I'm an idiot with my blazer and a shirt with my face on it.
He had a blazer and a Kansas City Chiefs jersey on it.
Oh, sick.
He had a Mahomes jersey.
Good for him.
Yeah, it was funny.
So he wins, home crowd, giant pop.
It's great.
Then the next competition, another staple of the skills competition,
and it should make it go so that you have the tried and true fan favorites,
And then you have your things you haven't really done before or experimental things that hopefully succeed.
And if they don't, they're propped up by the staples.
The accuracy competition was shambolic.
It was a utter disaster.
They cannot, cannot, under any circumstance, go back to that stupid pane of glass with the sensors on it.
Thomas Hurdle won that competition 12 times
And it was
Nailed it, nothing, nailed it, nothing
Nailed it, nothing
And you hear like audible groans
I got a question about that
And it sucked the whole energy out of it
Was it so difficult to pull off the first accuracy competition
That they needed to replace it with a
With the styrofoam
Like it was fine with the styrofoam, I don't get it
Was it sponsored?
I don't remember
Was it a sponsored thing?
Why change something that's not broken?
Yeah, if it's Geico, like, put five Styrofoam Geico targets.
Also, why was there a target in the middle?
No players aiming there.
Make it the four corners like it always is.
Even the five-hole would have been smarter.
Yes!
That's at least a target.
The five-hole was just off the ice.
It was the chest!
It was dumb.
It was...
Was it...
How much...
How scintillating was it when they had to pull the glass off of it and then put the new
piece of glass...
Oh, they had to fix it!
Because the glass chipped.
Oh, it was a disaster!
How long was that in Arena?
It must have felt like forever.
Four hours.
I think.
Like no, it was a disaster.
So everything up to that is great.
Fastest skater.
Fuck yeah.
Like I'm definitely tuning in for that.
I'm not turning that off no matter what.
Now let's say people do.
If you're there, you're at least like, Jordan Bennington's in this.
Shit yeah.
And Alex Petrangelo, like I don't think he missed.
Like he was great in that competition and Perron was great.
Yeah!
Like all the blues guys did really well.
And the accuracy comes, sucks all the energy out of the building, and what was it followed
up by?
The women warming up.
Like, warming up for their game.
So, how many people turned it off and never turned it back on?
So, they were just shooting around, I guess?
Yeah, because you gotta warm up.
Yeah.
Right.
You just can't send them out there, yeah.
And so, there's all these people that are, like, going out to get hot dogs and stuff
like that, and, like, when they started, like, it was sparse.
It was sparse.
That's a shame.
Because it was a good game.
Yes, it was.
It's like a great comedian getting ready to go on stage.
Or it's like you pay 80 bucks to see one of your favorite comedians, right?
You drop 100 bucks to see John Mulaney, which I almost did when I was in New York.
It's a lot of money.
But then his opener sucks.
What?
That's about the price of a ticket.
Yeah, it should be.
It's a lot of money, though.
It isn't, it isn't.
It's a lot of money for the jokes.
I mean, it's about what I would expect.
Right.
But like a Leafs ticket starts at 80 bucks.
Yeah, that's true.
No, but I'm picturing like
Ajax yuck yucks
Which was like
You're talking about New York
John Mulaney in New York
It's probably MSG, right?
No, no, it was a smaller venue
Which makes it more expensive actually, not less
So anyway, sorry
Here's me iceberging myself
Imagine you go to see any comedian
Under any circumstances
And their opener sucks
It's harder for the headlining comedian
To be funny
And I just felt like the women were super up against it
because they were following that stupid shooting accuracy computer screen Tron thingy
that they can literally under no circumstances go back to.
No.
They cannot.
I didn't understand why the women's game needed to be that night.
Why can't it be before the men's tournament the next day?
To be honest, I think probably the skills competition is higher rated.
Oh, fair enough.
I don't know that to be true.
That's probably true.
That's probably true.
Because at least then they could be warming up together and then have some fun and you
know what I mean.
If the goal, well, but also there has to be an intermission somewhere.
Right.
Right?
So there needs to be.
So it would have been better if the accuracy competition had just been the normal accuracy
competition and then you go, okay, here's the intermission where they warm up.
Where they warm up.
Right.
But you've already had the 2,000 hours of them replacing the plexiglass and it not working.
And okay, fair enough.
So it's probably already behind.
It was like the day of the All-Star game, there was a house band.
So if you want to go get hot dogs or go to the bathroom or something like that, you can.
And if you don't, there's the house band.
And go have fun.
So for this, the active thing was they're warming up.
And the accuracy just frigging destroyed it.
Just completely took the air out of it.
Fans were excited for it, but it was low scoring, right?
But they did get it back
Pretty good response at the end
Americans almost tie it up
So that was great
Then Alan McInnes taking the slap shot
In the hardest shot
It was cool
Obviously fake
They shouldn't have done the pretend fake
He did not take a 100 mile an hour slap shot
He used to
They put up his score that he won the competition with
Back in the day
So they put that up as the charity marker
But he didn't actually shoot that. Oh, he didn't. Did they fake that?
Yes, but then people started tweeting it out like he did.
But like, if you were there, you see it go like across the...
Dude, he's old. Like, time is unfit.
I thought that was the cool part, though.
It was the for the kids, the fun bit.
Yeah, you should have... They should have clarified that,
hey, if you do, if you hit this number that he hit back in the day,
this is what we'll donate to charity.
You shouldn't have made him shoot it and then post the number.
Oh, that's what it was.
Yeah, so everybody who crossed it, every time they crossed it, I think it was 5,000 or 10,000 went to the children's charity.
Which is great, but just say that and don't make him hit the shot and then put up the number like he got it.
Don't fake it.
It's weird.
No, I thought it was perfectly fine to do.
The problem was people not picking up on the fact that it was obviously fake.
Yeah, I didn't.
I honestly didn't.
I was like, well, that's impressive.
You have to really pay attention to everything that's happening.
I like believing in things, man.
No, I guess so.
I'm just a little disappointed now.
No, no.
I got you.
I got you.
I totally feel it.
But it got the energy back in the building.
Hardest shot.
So Shea Weber obviously takes the crown back.
That was cool.
Also, I think that the hardest shot should end the skills competition, in my opinion.
See, I think they wanted to be like, look at this new thing that we're doing that's going to revolutionize everything.
Yeah, but put that in the middle somewhere.
The Dude Perfect event?
Yeah.
The problem is they had this huge scaffold that had to come down.
They had to clear that section of people to get it in place or whatever.
It was a huge to-do, and I think to do it in the middle of the competition would have been impossible.
There's something there with this.
It wasn't pulled off great, but most things in their first iteration aren't.
There's something there, the Dude Perfect competition.
But they definitely got to dim the lights, I think, and have a glowing puck or something,
Because it was hard to see
It's not
You couldn't pick the puck up
You had to literally
Look at it
As it's on the ground
And then when they shoot it
Follow it
With your eyes widened
Like you're
Friggin
Some marsupial
Just
Seeing the thing
Did we talk about
The glow in the dark thing
On the show
Or was that before the show
What was the glow in the dark thing
When I said I was supposed to be
Like glow in the dark mini golf
No it was after
Or sorry
That was before we
Started recording
Before we started recording
We were talking about that
So the idea I think
That's perfect
Because, like, Adam suggested the glow-in-the-dark, the puck.
And I think the total whole thing should be, like, glow-in-the-dark mini golf,
where the entire thing's dark, the sticks are glowing, the puck is glowing,
and then you just shoot it in the dark.
And also, you don't make the biggest target worth the most.
The biggest target should be the smallest amount of points.
Yeah, what the hell was with that?
Because then you're just going to shoot out one target.
Which is what they did.
But now they know.
Because, like, the nets, no one even made the test.
Have they never played skeetball?
Right.
The smallest hole should be worth the most.
It wasn't well executed.
That doesn't make sense.
Oh, let me go for this really hard one for less points.
Right.
Never seen a game of darts, huh?
It wasn't well executed.
Yeah.
So that was tough.
Who thought of that?
Also having, who is it, Huland and Knight in that competition and that competition alone.
Like all the teasers had Kendall Coyne Schofield in the fastest skater.
Yeah, they didn't do that.
And then she wasn't in it.
Yeah, that's weird.
Like why wouldn't you, she's in the teaser.
Were they afraid they'd have to pay her again?
I don't know.
I don't know or who was it Brianna Decker in the in the well. They didn't do that competition again
Wasn't there's something there wasn't the best pulled off
So what I was saying about hardest shot though was I want to see hardest one-timer
Because who gets to just skate up to a puck and blast it that's a good point
It's pretty rare, so I want to see hardest one-timer, and then someone tweeted me a great idea
Hardest shot should be a cumulative score of your hardest slap shot the traditional one hardest one-timer and hardest wrist shot
No, you don't like it?
No?
Why don't you like it?
That's the most Twitter thing I've ever seen in my life.
Also, it would take a really long time.
Yeah, show me a heat map on that, please.
Whoever gets the best heat map wins.
I have an idea.
No, listen, they're great tools.
They're really great tools for analyzing the game.
But for God's sakes, guys, it's like a one-timer I get.
But you're asking for three shots from ten different players?
That's a lot.
You're not going to watch that.
You're not going to watch that.
Come on, and that's the thing it's them. It's the most Twitter thing is like that's the actual that would be the actual equivalency of the
You're probably right, but the whole point is enter
Yeah, have fun make it entertaining. Can I throw out an idea for a new competition? Please do yeah
You get 10 skaters each one goes out to center ice. Mm-hmm
They skate from center ice to the blue line best zone entry wins
Best bag skate.
That's the new fastest skater.
It's not exciting and flying around.
You've got to touch all the lines.
Go back.
Best bag skate.
Hold on, hold on.
Is there a zone entry denials competition, too?
Martin Marincin just jumps in there.
Martin Marincin!
What about best dump the puck in from center ice?
Oh, man.
Mike Babcock is the coach of that competition.
Best back pass on a power play.
That would be the Leafs.
That's too many men on the ice penalty.
Oh, Babs for sure.
Disco ball drops.
Lasers.
Can we do, can people tweet us their favorite bad all-star game ideas?
Yeah, please.
Yeah, yeah, for sure.
Hashtag bad all-star game ideas.
Having a glass pane decide most accurate shooter.
How about that one?
No, they never do that.
It was terrible.
Frigging terrible.
What else we got?
Well, yeah, so that was the whole competition.
So next day?
No, no, no.
That night.
Oh, I got to see Layla?
Is that her name?
The Blues fan?
Yes.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I was just walking by her.
And she did such a great job with those intros.
So good.
All I got to do was walk by her, but I went, congrats on the ring.
And she goes, thanks!
Aw, she's so cute.
That was cool.
Oh, my God.
I love what she said.
Petrangelo!
You're captain!
I was like, oh, yeah.
Like freaking Andy Frost.
Damn!
Sign her up.
You know, no, she was great.
And then I got to talk to Biz afterward
And he was wonderful
And I got to talk to Elliot Freeman after
Oh, what did you and Freeze talk about?
Oh, just a former Steve Dangle podcast guest
Elliot Freeman
Don't remember him
And he's never been on another podcast
I know
Ever, his whole life
It was funny
Has he not?
Or is it just because we kept him for two hours
And he was like, uh
I remember at the end of that show
He was like, it's been two hours
Jesus, I gotta get out of here
I mean, like, he doesn't have one of his own
Oh
Yeah, I got to talk to Biz and then him
And I'm like, hello daddies
How is he? How is Elliot?
Oh, he's good
He had a really good time, he was talking about
What did you ask him?
I'm trying to remember now, dude
He was like the 40th friggin' interview I did that day
Okay
But it was about the skills competition
And that should all be coming to the Sportsnet YouTube channel very soon
I will watch that one
What the plans are for next year
And gearing up for the trade deadline
And all those things
then was club night with
Bardem. Did you,
because Mr. GB was
there, the count, Gary Bettman.
Oh, I walked by him. That was it.
So you did see him?
Oh yeah, I was like, you're banned from the show, and I kept walking.
Was he like, hey Steve, can I come on your...
And I just
mushed him.
Took his towel and you whipped him with it?
Beat it, kid. You didn't try to talk to him or anything?
No. No, what for?
What, because I'm happy to see him?
He's the commissioner of the league.
Play I
Nah
Alright
Nah
Nah I didn't feel like it
Um
Hung out with the bar down guys
There was a
There was a bar
That we went to
That
It was just drinks
Pizza
And upstairs they had
Nintendo 64
And we played Smash Bros
For like two hours
So would you say
You were
Down with that bar
I sure was down
With that bar
Wow
So
Think about that
Let it sink in
No
Yeah
Anyway, I've heard they're a lot of fun.
Yes, they are a lot of fun, and they kicked my ass every single time.
I can only imagine.
Oh, there's only one character I even really know how to use in Smash Bros., and it's Yoshi.
And they very quickly figured out that I only know one move, and that's jump in the air and smash down with my ass.
And that was it.
Like in real life.
Yeah, I was just going to say, what's that different?
All I do is use my ass.
Just no wonder I got back issues.
I kick smash in my spine and into the ground.
And my enemies.
You get into those battle royales against Samus.
Yes.
Fox.
Anyway, so that was fun.
So Friday night was good.
That was good.
Saturday, you wake up.
Saturday, I wake up.
They have a big game.
Goddamn bar down, guys.
No.
Were you hung?
No.
Okay.
I mean, no.
Anyway, nope, nope.
We're not going to go there.
Move it on.
Wait, you can be hung over at the All-Star game.
I'm sure work doesn't mind.
Yeah, that's what we meant.
No, that's not what he meant.
Yep.
Oh, stop it.
You stop it.
Anyway, continue.
Is this your first show?
Come on, kid.
What are you, new?
Get with it.
Keep going.
No, at All-Star Game, we really had nothing to do.
Pre-game, there's nothing?
What was their pre-game?
No, there was Green Day, who then said fuck a lot.
Yeah, how did that go over?
Well, so I don't remember where I was, but I wasn't watching it.
And so I just looked at my Twitter, and everyone's just like, wow, Green Day said fuck a lot.
And it just makes me laugh because I'm like, well, I guess next year they're putting the game on a delay.
And Green Day is in the first of a multi-year deal with the NHL team.
The NHL is so good at being like, who was big in 2004?
Why are you signing a deal?
Yeah, why are you signing a deal with Green Day, whose last real hit album was American Idiot?
Like, that was like real hit album, like big hit.
2015 NHL Awards, they had like Chris Daughtry.
Yeah, like, and then why are you signing a multi-year deal with anyone?
Fall Out Boy is like the biggest act they've had in a long time.
Like, Fall Out Boy got big again.
Yes.
Kind of.
You know what I mean?
Yeah, because they're back together.
And they came back with a couple singles.
But no, no, the thing is, is that with Green Day, I don't, like, if you go into one of
those agreements, you know that the artists can do whatever they want because you've locked
them down now.
And they know that if you want out, you're going to have to pay them.
You literally gave them fuck you money.
Yeah, they don't care if they play another show for the NHL.
They're getting their money anyway.
So, and anyway, so I guess NBC will be putting that on a, on a delay next year.
I don't know.
It's, well, you know, it was great to be there for a historic event.
The first time an F-bomb was ever dropped in an arena.
Yeah, right?
Yeah.
It's not as though we don't see it melt every commercial break, going to break.
Do we remember that the Caps win their first ever Stanley Cup and they're skating it around the ice
and there were boobs on national television in at least two countries?
I did forget about that.
Yes.
I did forget about that.
Wow.
I just want to smush them against the car.
Listen, I'd smush my boobs against it if the Leafs won.
I would right up there with my hairy boobs.
Oh, for sure.
Yeah, like right up there.
I would.
That guy that, when the Nationals won, that guy that jumped on the dugout and then he
was like a bigger guy and he like ripped his shirt off and belly slid across the Nationals
dugout was amazing.
It's the best celebration I've ever seen in my life.
I'm trying to remember it.
Have you never seen that?
I probably have.
Hold on.
I'll bring it up.
But anyway.
We don't.
Yeah.
Anyway.
So that was.
So the game was fun.
Kind of nothing. Yeah, did a meetup
Met some folks, big fans
of the podcast. What's up, St. Louis?
What's up? What did you think of the game?
You were in the arena, right? Was it fun?
Electric? Yeah, it was fun
Sorry, I don't know why I went all the way up there
Is that the case?
What was the reaction to the game?
Yeah
Wee
So it was less than
the skills gone?
It seems like it's pretty
Widely acknowledged now that the skills comp is what you come for is the big night and the game is like they tried so hard
Dude, they were the Pacific team was blocking shots at the end
That's how badly they did not not how badly they wanted to win how badly they didn't want to go to overtime
Right is what I thought was happening. It was cool on the television side. It was cool having like Gretzky there
Yeah, we tried to get him. That was another hurdle. Yeah. Well cuz he had like a
unbelievably long line
for him. Oh, I went to FanFest
for a little bit. Oh, that's cool. That was cool. Those are always
neat. Yep. All the
trophies were there.
And yeah, and then after all
that, I'm trying to remember everything. Yeah, no, but it
sounds like it is how we think it is.
It's a carnival. Yeah.
And I will say this. I don't blame
players
for saying no.
Ever.
Anymore, especially. Why? Just because
there's so much going on there is so much shit to do yeah so much to do that you're constantly
getting bugged for interviews and and the the travel just to get in the first person we spoke
to on car wash day so this is like 10 in the morning was tyler bertuzzi and i remember uh
oh maybe that was the pink whitney night the wednesday night i don't know um but i remember
i'm in producer drew's hotel room we're watching uh wings wild and i'm just like oh tyler bertuzzi
he's playing tonight well we're not going to see him he was the first one we got wow so he and he's
and he was talking about watching he watched a movie last night so i'm like okay his game ended
at at least 10 locally then he flew here then he watched a movie and so to and now he's here like
how much rest did you really get and people are they're bringing in their whole families and
they're walking they got all their luggage and they're like a caravan or whatever and for some
of them it's cool like they get their family gets to be part of the festivities but a guy like alex
ovechkin he's like yeah i've already done that a bunch of times i'm gonna go to the beach and i'm
gonna get suspended for a game and my team's gonna let me because i'm alex ovechkin you know what i
mean i need the rest my body is old yeah they probably don't mind playing m81 games yeah 82
like i talked to chris prider he's like uh yeah i was gonna go on vacation with my family and
And instead I brought them here.
And like he says this as we're in like one degree St. Louis cold off the red carpet.
Tough sell.
Yeah, like I mean, it's, you know, fine city, cool festivities and everything.
Wouldn't you rather be somewhere else?
I think people from St. Louis would agree that you'd rather be in Florida or something.
If you're the option, okay, you're a millionaire.
Where do you want to go with your wife and kids?
You know, or even with your buddies.
People from Missouri would not pick Missouri.
That'd be like us going, hey, you want a vacation in Toronto in January?
It's going to suck when the game's in, like, Edmonton.
Well, next year is in Florida.
There you go.
Everybody will be there.
No one's skipping that game.
Especially all the Russians.
You know what?
My rest is fine.
The Russians are like everybody over the age of, like, 65 and retired.
They're all going to wake up like Mighty Ducks.
I woke up, no pain at all.
Just turning it over.
Yeah, Florida's a pretty easy sell.
Nothing against St. Louis, but like...
It's cold.
I think everybody knows that.
It's vacation time.
And you're trying to...
It's like long weekend when you try to book a Friday off or something.
You're trying to tack your bye week onto it.
Right?
So it's a young man's event.
You know, I mean, who are the old guys who really came?
Stahl.
Stahl, Weber, Oshie sort of getting up there.
Other than that, it was like it was the young guys pulling the weight.
that makes sense
yeah
anybody
anybody that
or anything else
that happened
or like
Flight Home
any stories
trying to remember
well Flight Home Frig
we
so we had a connecting
flight in Charlotte
and while we were there
we found out
Kobe Bryant died
and I'm
and I'm with
the two YouTube managers
for the network
and so
we had
we had a very small window
for them to tell everyone
oh here's what you should
be doing right now
and they're answering
you know
a thousand texts
a thousand emails
and then as soon as
the plane lands in Toronto, whoop, turn the phone
back on, don't necessarily wait for it to pull
in all the way and, you know,
you gotta tell everyone what to do
and, hey, get this up tonight.
What? It's gonna take at least two or three hours
to pull viz of that. And
you just want us to go find Kobe Bryant
highlights? And, yeah, it was pretty wild.
That's a lot. But we got to see everyone
in the restaurant discover it
in person. Because it was
reported by TMZ.
People didn't believe it.
Well, if you're ESPN, for example, so ESPN was on on all the TVs.
If you're ESPN, you can't go to air with news of that magnitude and say TMZ reports.
You're ESPN.
If it happened, you're confirming it happened.
You can.
You can.
CBS and NBC, and they do that all the time.
You need to nail that.
You need to nail that, and you need to go with your information.
You need to go with the report, though, and say they're reporting this.
We are on it.
That's a tough one.
That's what you have to do.
it's a tough you don't have a choice but then if you're following along on twitter you see his four
kids and i even overheard people go oh my god his four kids you know yeah first of all doesn't have
four kids second of all wasn't his four kids you know and then rick fox and then oh my god like
and then i read that tweet like rick fox is alive source his daughter you know imagine getting that
call hey is your dad dead yeah there's a crazy amount of misinformation out there on sunday
But then once Woj, I think it was once Woj confirmed it, then it goes on all the TVs and like you literally, it's like chatter, chatter, chatter, and everyone just went quiet.
And all you hear is like, oh my God.
Because it sinks in.
A couple of people in the restaurant cried.
Yeah, it was wild, man.
It was wild.
Sorry to go there with it.
Well, I mean, we had to, I think we would have been remiss if we didn't mention it.
Of course.
It was a major, major thing.
And, you know, you talk about instant, there's so many things that come to mind with Kobe, but, you know, a player with so much talent and with so much drive, and, you know, we talked about it this morning on Virgin, it was like, you know, here's a guy who was so talented and so driven and yet so extremely difficult to work with that he blew up his first dynasty only to have Shaq go and win a championship with Dwayne Wade and with the Kobe how my ass tastes stuff.
and then started another one with Paul Gasol, right?
Like, he really, and then said,
you know, I got one more than Shaq without, you know, like,
and that was, like, a big thing for him.
But then made amends.
They all made amends.
Well, and the thing was is that the first half of his career
was kind of like he was sort of seen as a jerk,
and Jesse, please weigh in on this.
And then, obviously, you know, the allegation surface.
Ashley Docking, I thought, was really in her element this morning.
Oh, man, was she great.
Yeah, she was great.
Please watch that.
There's no way we could say it any better than she could.
Yeah, that's the Sportsnet 590 The Fan Twitter page,
and I think probably Sportsnet's main one as well.
Yeah, she was freaking great with Hugh Burrell and Scott McArthur.
Everyone always wrongly attributes to the, we were talking about,
I think it was Ben Roethlisberger or something like that,
when Ashley and I hosted a show together,
and I said, what would it take you to forgive an athlete for something like that?
And she said, receipts.
Receipts.
She's the one that said, like, what have you done lately to make amends,
to change, have you gone to counseling?
Greg Hardy, you were talking about.
Greg Hardy?
I think so.
No, it doesn't matter.
Whatever it was.
Yeah, Ashley is really brilliant on that stuff.
Like, really strong.
But Kobe is like, it's funny because in the second half of his life and his career,
becomes a family man, becomes a philanthropist, becomes an artist.
You know, the guy won an Oscar.
For what?
For a little short.
A short.
He did called Dear Basketball.
A short film.
Oh, he won an Oscar.
One of the saddest things
Everything about it's sad
But just particularly
About his life
It seemed like
There was so much
More life to live
It wasn't
It was
It seems like
It was just cut off
Right while
His family
He was building this
Not even like
Third chapter
This fifth chapter
Of his life
Because he did so much
During his basketball career
And now post basketball
He's building this camp
That he's flying to
That he's built
For all these young kids
To play basketball
And it just
It seems like
It was cut off
And there's so much
More life to live
And you can't help
But like I know, I'm sure once the dust settles and stuff, his wife, Vanessa, will want to continue that legacy as much as possible.
And I know that the basketball community will get behind that.
The one thing that you don't have is, you know, when you talk about philanthropic efforts, is it becomes much harder when the when the name that it's based around is no longer there, especially if it's early.
And I hope and I know that that will continue.
But it is, as Jesse said, it's such a shame that that voice isn't there because there's a presence that these people have.
uh that you can't replace and kobe especially because that's that's one his main lasting
legacy is the kobe the mamba factor of who he was he was like the pinnacle of sport of a guy who's
overly driven to the point where he's probably damaging himself and he took that and he put
into these other aspects of his life where he's winning an oscar where he's building these camps
and just that that's probably what he's going to leave behind just who he was yeah yeah it's
It's really sad.
Well, and then we're also finding out in real time, like, are the games still on?
And that was another thing.
There was misinformation.
All the games are canceled.
The afternoon games are still going to go on.
None of the games are canceled.
And by the end, like, were there night games played yesterday?
All the games played.
All the games were played?
Yeah, no NBA games have been missed.
That's fucking wild.
I don't think you cancel games.
I think that's the last thing somebody like Kobe Bryant would want.
Right.
I agree with that.
I don't think you cancel games.
Like half the Houston Rockets were openly weeping during the National Anthem.
I think it's, yes.
But if you cancel that and everybody goes home, there's no grieving together.
And I think that's important.
I think it's important sometimes to grieve together and to know that you're not alone
and being sad about these things.
They said at the Pro Bowl, which was also yesterday, that the players were playing like zombies
and they just kept going off the field.
They were. That was another thing.
They're like, are you guys sure this really happened?
Tiger Woods was playing, and there's footage of him going, what?
Yeah.
When his thing is catapulted.
Excuse me?
Excuse me?
And then Neymar scored a goal and put up the 2-4 on his, like, in Paris.
Oh.
Like, it was, yeah.
So, you know, this is a massive name and a massive legacy that is unfortunately cut short.
But I think that the legacy will continue.
It will continue to build after he's gone.
He's got the right people in place, obviously, to drive those foundations forward.
It is a, it's a tragedy.
It really is.
And especially because, you know, this is a man who was taking his daughter and then let's not forget the other coach that died and the other child that died in this, that they were going to the same place.
Other eight people.
Well, yeah, but I mean, just the other father-daughter thing going on.
Right, right, right.
It's always a tragedy when anyone dies, but especially that way.
And their families.
Oh, change forever.
Yeah.
Change forever.
So hearts go out to them for what that's worth.
It was cool what the Raps and Spurs did.
It was almost
It was well yeah across the league
But it was all it was
I think it was probably better
For the players like if you're gonna
Have to play like at least it's
DeMar yeah like that
Seemed fitting that seemed right
Kobe he seemed like he seemed like
Such an idol to the guys
Who were like the other NBA players
It seemed like every NBA players favorite player
Was Kobe like you only had a guy like Trey Young
Who just entered the league
two years ago and he was on a mission right he was on a mission last night yeah he took 41 field
goals shot 81 like crazy the stuff that happened was unbelievable but you see how he affected
the two generations behind him because like generation behind him is like the durant the
westbrook generation and then the next one is like the donchich and the trey young and those guys
were their favorite player was still kobe bryant and it seemed like kobe understood like the
narrative of sport that fans
understand. It's like, Kobe
came in the league being like, okay, Michael's that
guy, and I want to be the next Michael, and I
want to be Kobe. And I just
appreciate an athlete who understands
the narratives that fans look at
the lens through sport as. Like, he understood
the history and the legendary
factor that you can be just by throwing
a ball at a hoop. And it's incredible.
I wish,
not to distract from Kobe, but I wish more
NHL players got that.
Especially the better ones. I think
And I think there's a lot, there's almost like a rejection of that in the NHL.
Whereas in the NFL.
They fall so far back in the sport when they leave it.
This sport needs Wayne Gretzky more than once a year.
And I just don't think he's down for that.
And we don't get a ton of Mario Lemieux.
And in talking to all the younger guys, in all the interviews I did,
You know what the NHL misses is Pavel Datsyuk
That guy should still be in the league
Because if you ask so many
Of the younger players
They all talk about Datsyuk
They all talk about him
They're more hesitant
To be like, oh yeah, I grew up watching Crosby
Or whatever, because again, Crosby's in the league
For 12 years, but they all say
Because there was that gap
Which obviously Gretzky retired
But he wasn't the best player in the league
For the last few years of his career
It was Yarmir Yager
With a couple people
You know
Winning the heart
In between
So
After Yager
I think the
The torch went to Datsuk
And
Then he
Completely fregs off
And his ghost plays
For the
Arizona Coyotes
You know
All the
Greats
Like really seem to
Sort of
Disappear
Disappear
Or they become like
Mascots
Like Brett Hull
Which is cool
And fun
And great
And should be doing that
And everything
But
Yeah they just all
Sort of
Once they're done
they're gone. It seems like
the thing we ask
of the Leafs, like right now, is the thing
that Kobe had too much of.
That will to drive and just that
over-enthusiasm to win.
Drove people insane. Drove himself insane.
All day I've been watching just clips
on Instagram of all the Kobe stuff
they're putting up. And one of the
interviews, he was talking about how practice
should always be harder than the games
and that he's going to drive you in
practice to the point where you hate him. Because
once you reach Game 7 of the NBA Finals,
is going to be nothing if practice is more intense
than games in the NBA Finals.
And that's a crazy mentality to have.
But that's something we ask of our players today
when we see our team go out there and not try.
We just want them to have that mentality.
You will do whatever it takes to win this game.
And he had that.
That's MMA training.
They work you out until exhaustion,
and then they go, okay, now we're going to start the class.
Because once you get in there, you're going to be exhausted.
You're not going to be, you know,
Let's say your opponent gets tired, and he starts opening up
You're not gonna get these opportunities when you're fresh as a daisy you're gonna get them when you're beat to shit
Mm-hmm, you know so it it's it's an interesting mentality. I'm sure there's some pushback
Oh, I'm sure there's some validity to it as well
Used to play guys
To 100 you say you're gonna play me one-on-one to 100 Wow
And you're not leaving until one of us scores a hundred points one-on-one. Oh my wonder how many those he lost
Zero can't imagine
Like it's not gonna actually for me. It would be a very short game. I
Said okay, we'll be here three minutes. Mr.
33 shots and then gets 101. Mm-hmm, by the way
Complete aside, but that Zion Williamson performance 37 points in 39 minutes of play or something
Yeah, 17 straight points.
He's a flipping beast.
That was over two games, right?
Because I was sort of following that.
No, I think that was the first game.
He scored 17 straight points in the fourth quarter trying to bring them back.
So I thought he had 17 points.
No.
He had 17 straight points just in the fourth.
Yeah, in like a span of three minutes to bring them back.
And people keep saying this guy's too fat.
He's not, man.
He's just a beast.
He does kind of look funny, but that block in his second game.
Yeah.
Stupid.
That guy is he's gonna grow into his body like oh, yeah, they're unfounded
Yeah, well they got a and he had a knee injury okay his body literally holds together
Wow what athletes can do is fucked. Well. Yeah, especially young athletes like I read there was there was there was some
scientific thing where like if if if
Sprinters get like a second and a half faster at the hundred meter dash
Your body's going to be moving so fast, it's going to be to the point where, like, bone is going to separate, or muscle is going to separate from bone.
And I'm like, man, Usain Bolt is a second and a half off of that.
Yeah.
And people think that sprinting is the easy one.
Man, that does a lot of damage to your body.
Are you shitting me?
Yeah.
Dude, Donovan Bailey's, like, hamstring exploded.
Like, he was the fastest man until he very was not.
Yeah, like, that was it.
And he still went back to the Olympics.
Yep.
Fuck.
Well, you know what?
I think we'll wrap it here, because I know Steve's got to get to ice surfing, because
that's on a Monday night tonight.
I'm not sure why.
Oh, I do know why.
There's only two games tomorrow.
Oh, okay.
And there's four games today.
So Steve's going to surf the ice.
He's going to surf on down at the CBC building and get that done.
I'm going to cruise the Vista.
We're going to save.
Obviously, we'll have Leaf Stuff to break down next episode, which will be great.
We're going to save the Athletic Players Poll for that episode as well.
And we will be back Wednesday, for anybody wondering, and back to our normal podcast
schedule. Sunday nights, Wednesday
nights, and you'll be ready to go. Cool?
Ew.
What? Does that hurt?
No.
It's like one of the things I do that doesn't hurt.
I used to do that too, but my fingers would swell up.
So I stopped doing it. Yeah, stop that.
Ugh.
Ha ha ha ha ha.
