the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake
let's go here we are about to embark on another journey steve got a question for you are you
ready to go yes where are you going with this how does this end are you making fun of me i don't
like this i don't like how this is starting how is this ending you're making fun of me jesse are
you ready to go i am ready to go okay well then let's bring on the 600 pound tiger and get right
into it goal of the week okay so uh steven uh last week we we well last episode we talked about
patrick line a lot and we i asked you know your favorite goal of his with the winnipeg jets this
week or this episode i gotta remember that we're doing that two episodes a week i want to know uh
what the best goal was uh in calgary toronto versus calgary what was your favorite goal moment
thing says game time like frosted flakes it's nothing says it not even game time says game
time like frosted flakes um wait are we am i allowed to select from one game or from the
most recent game or from both games in both games whatever you'd like both both games whatever i
like uh i'm i'm going to i'm going to say jake muzzin scoring right on the logo of matthew
kachuk i think i think that was an amazing that's where you'd go with it an amazing goal an amazing
goal that he got just right on the logo there he also scored a goal in the first game uh i believe
they've already played eight games they're all starting to blend together because there's been
so many of them but he made matthew kachuk upset and he did it in a way that wasn't dangerous
oh no it was so dangerous steve i heard from all the calgary flames fans who were saying it was
super dangerous what and like people were like well why aren't you calling out the wayne simmons
hits that he had on manjapani in the first game you did didn't you i called it out the second it
and he was penalized are you seeing the difference but uh no the the hit from behind
the accidental hit from behind is far more dangerous than a flippy dippy puck to the chest
i'll i'll take a flippy dippy puck to the chest without chest protection that's how hardcore i am
folks i it was steve's great and you know who's greater jake muzzin and his beard all right that's
You're a frosted flakes goal of the half week.
We're going to start calling it because really we're doing an episode every
three to four days. So goal of the half week for frosted flakes.
No, you don't like that.
A little clunky, but you can feel free to name the segment,
whatever you would like. If you could come up with a better name.
What about Sally of the week times two Sally of the week,
the second edition. Okay.
What about Sally of the week?
what about why not selly the why
brought to you by barb's tea cozies or whatever well we're hey steven you don't know what sponsor
we're bringing on for that oh my god heavens to bet it could be blue nile engagement ring so you
don't know okay so what do you know i don't you know they could be made by 10 designers
from around the world very special limited time offer you have no idea so is this a read yeah well
it will be later on in the show so moving on jesse who is our sponsor for who were the crowd
who wore the crown uh today's sponsor is stonks stonks oh not stocks but stocks because stocks
are making headlines these days and we we uh received an email from them and they said hey
we want to sponsor the segments here well and and here's the here's the script so when you
are tired of the rich getting richer as you see in the top three uh billionaires in the world
made enough money to inoculate the entire world with covet 19 vaccines did you know that
that's how much money they've made in the last 10 months that is a true story
bezos zuckerberg and uh and elon musk so when you're feeling like eating the rich
make sure you log on to reddit are stonks why not throw a few why not
why not why not explain the game stop saga because i don't understand it
okay so essentially it's this oh my god i don't care do you not it's so interesting
We should do it at the end
We'll do it at the end
It's the biggest story in the world
Alright well fine
So why not
Why not
Why not cost the rich a few bucks
Steven
Who is the person you're giving the crown to
Jesse always goes last by the way
Well you're the big grand finale
That's how you have to look at it
Do you want to go first
No go ahead Steve
Steve go ahead
you know we're not here to talk about dollars and cents that's for the stonks conversation
later the game stonks conversation so once the puck drops i don't care about dollars and cents
i just care about results and who has delivered results like the league's leading scorer mitchell
marner has over the past eight games really but actually six i think he's had what is it 11 points
in his last six games mitchell marner is a force of nature that cannot be stopped another game
winning goal for him just an excellent performance an excellent turtle i've fallen and i can't get
up sally i love it i love what this kid is doing this season mitchell marner where's my crown
love it i'm gonna go with scarborough's own wayne simmons who got his first goal not off
an actual shot that went in which was great we love way love wayne it's great justin fisher
likes wayne most of all i think um yes noted fighter of wayne simmons um now the thing with
wayne is uh uh when he scores you could tell he's a beloved teammate by the way the people
around him react it's not like Wayne Wayne's excited but he's 32 he scored a lot of goals
when when he scores and Mitch Marner and Travis Dermott lose their minds then you're like okay
so everybody loves this guy and what an addition he's been obviously the Mangia Ponte hit wasn't
great I mean if you're a Calgary fan Flames fan listening and you hate Wayne Simmons right now
I'm gonna get you um and it but but those things do happen when you play on the edge we've seen it
from a million different players before um and the thing with wayne is i feel like he's given the
team a little bit of its swagger back uh they didn't seem to have much confidence last year
and you saw what muzzin did to kachuk and we'll get to that in a bit but but i don't think that
muzzin does that if there isn't a wayne simmons do you know what i'm saying and i think muzzin's
mixed it up and now he's not alone you know what i mean yes 100 and speaking of loneliness we need
to talk about good chuck on that one because there might be a connection there between those two now
let's move on to jesse before we wrap up the segment you know what adam wayne simmons is very
important to my crown as well because there's a lot of chatter on twitter and a lot of the chatter
on twitter was uh was about the least power play and how the first lines look in and the second
line because wayne's on the first line obviously and for the first what was it four games people
didn't want him there people said take him off because he's not scoring he's not doing anything
and then he pot out a couple and people seem to calm down but throughout all that mess the one
person who kept quiet about pp1 was william nylander everybody wanted everybody all that
chatter on twitter wanted him moved up to pp1 but he never spoke up he he always just comes to the
arena and does his job so my crown goes william nylander for never um never falling to the twitter
hype and being like, yeah, I want to be on PP1
and just taking his role on
PP2 and dominating there
if we're being honest. He and Tavares have done
pretty good on that side. Yeah, having a damn good
performance with a guy who's one of the
top 10 centers in the league. So
shout out William Nylander for never
speaking up about his role on PP2.
I gotta say, William Nylander never
speaks up at all for the amount of shit that guy takes
and I kind of appreciate that. Like, he just
doesn't say anything. The one thing I will ask
this year, because Mitch
Marner's even now working on it. William
Nylander's got a great shot. If he can hit the net, can we just William shoot low? Because even
if you try to shoot low, you'll shoot high. And if you shoot lower, then it will probably go bar
down. The thing that drives me flipping crazy about William Nylander to this day, and I'm a
gigantic apologist is every shot could be a field goal. And I just, I want, I want him to shoot a
little bit lower. I know he gets his goals, not, you know, from shot. A lot of them are in close
tight with the net and that sort of thing and that's probably a good thing harder to miss when
you're that close but i i just it's driving me absolutely crazy and there was a point uh against
calgary where i believe tavara set him up perfectly at the hash marks and he just ripped it over the
net and it's like where was that going man i i don't know i don't know if this is fair but there's
something about a shot that when it does miss high and wide it flings around the boards in a way that
it's basically a counter-attack for the other it's you know what it is you know what it is steve
it's the it's the brian mccabe of shots it's rarely wrong but when it does screw up it's
massive and it makes the front page the next day you know i've coined all these terms
brian mccabe syndrome the daryl boyce assist i got him to follow me because someone sent him that
clip yeah the nose followed me on twitter i was very happy that's awesome did you guys dm
No, I haven't slid just yet.
Okay, but it's going to happen.
Who?
DM who?
Oh, Boiser?
Oh, we go way back.
Shut up.
DM Boiser, go way back.
All right, that is Who Wore the Crown brought to you by Stonks.
Why not?
Try to top it off with your hedge funds.
Why not?
So the actual game, you know, with the Leafs and the Flames
is obviously a couple days ago now.
We know we've got Edmonton tonight at 10 Eastern.
uh i think it's eight mountain time and frankly um i mean there isn't a lot to say from this game
other than calgary's got to be mad because those are two completely winnable games that they didn't
win and toronto's got to be happy with an asterisk because they were two games where they could have
been it could have gone either way and in frankly in the second game there was no reason for it to
not be a dominant night on Toronto's part you know the first period they they come in and it's
and they're away from home and they're rested finally and they allow the Flames to get one shot
and by the middle of the second period the Flames are out shooting them again and it's as good a
period as I've ever seen them play they made two mistakes they took a penalty which led to a power
play where Calgary did not get a single attempt or not a single shot on goal and there was one
odd man rush that zach bogosian broke up with the ease of a dad playing with his kids like it was
it was pathetic it was well it was great for the leafs but like i was watching i was watching going
are the leafs this good or are the flames this bad they looked terrible it was that it's the old
the babcock thing where he's like you gotta show up on time you know the flame they didn't show up
and the game just started and the leafs were just going and i was like okay this isn't very
interesting for the second period though and that was what was so frustrating well that was the
problem yeah well you know what though what was the biggest worry for us first two games
freddie anderson okay the defense were like oh well you know it's a work in progress a lot of
turnover but freddie needs to look better is he not sharp yes i think he's looked wonderfully sharp
outside of the first two games those are long in the past now he's played i think four games since
then and he's been great in all of them and i think won all of them uh or no jack campbell's
won both his starts so he lost one freddie's been great freddie's been great um gives his team a
chance to win um he was better than markstrom a couple of those should not have gone in that's
true yeah and you could say you could sense the frustration from markstrom but to be honest i mean
And the team didn't really give him a whole heck of a lot of help.
Markstrom, that is, in the first, second period,
they kind of came on strong.
And that first Johnny Gaudreau goal, like, that, to me, it was like,
oh, my God, that's everything that I could not stand
about the Leafs defense the last four years.
Gaudreau's alone.
Gaudreau and Simone.
And Simone.
Yeah.
Two guys behind your top defensive pair.
That's not good enough.
No, absolutely not.
You can't do that.
And you can't have, like, okay, let's say one guy's out of position,
So you got Simone or you got Goudreau covered.
And by the way, if I'm going to cover anyone, it's going to be Johnny.
Like no offense to Simone, but really like this is a guy that scores 40 goals a year
and he is alone two feet in front of Frederick Anderson.
What do you think is going to happen?
Just crazy.
And then of course, you know, like the other goals were a little bit better.
I mean, his, his shot, the third goal, the, the, the second Goudreau, but third Calgary
goal was unbelievable.
It's a great shot.
And of course, two Leafs in front of Freddie, Freddie can't see it.
Yeah, that was a weird bounce off the glass, but, you know,
bounces, making your own luck, et cetera, et cetera.
But over those two games, the Leafs did a better job of that,
capitalizing on their chances, playing decently tidy anyway.
It's not, is Justin Holl going to win the Norris?
It's by how many votes.
Okay.
All right.
Like, Steve, explain.
oh i just love the way he's playing absolutely love the way he's playing he looks like the
most you could hope for based on expectation he's he's playing in a way that he did in the ahl
um but but he's doing it in the nhl with dominance he's playing his size finally he's no longer big
for nothing uh and he can still fly and he jumps up in the rush that that uh that assist uh on the
wayne simmons goal that's that's justin hall that's justin hall if you're kyle dubas that's
on your tape presenting what justin hall is um i'm just i'm glad i'm i'm not just seeing a
competent defenseman in that spot next to jake muzzin i'm seeing the best version of justin
hall he's and and a guy that you know got a lot of credit with along with jake muzzin for
the slowdown i don't know if you can can if you can hope to stop dry saddle mcdavid but you can
try to slow them down they did a great job against edmonton last game but we'll see what happens
tonight well so okay leafs nation this is where our scars start to show everyone's starting to
make memes about how justin hall is connor mcdavid's daddy you all need to knock that
shit off yeah are you that is crazy that's connor mcdavid are you nuts are you stop that stop that
right now we're poking the bear that stick is not long enough to poke the bear with you get out of
here you knock that off right now you stop it um 100 i'm with you like it's connor mcdavid he's
going to burn you if you're going to play him eight times in a year he's going to score on you
probably eight or more times and so it's a matter of like can you prevent connor mcdavid from
scoring in the same game as Leon Dreisaitl then you might have a chance that's sort of do you know
what I mean split them up what a dark way of putting it but you're right that's how good those
two are if they both score it's a problem only one huh you got a shot exactly now at the end of
the game and we've mentioned this before uh we've mentioned that a couple times already on the show
Kachuk mustn't obviously the Leafs score at the end of the game um and uh and the game ends and
And Kachuk's in the corner on his knees, and Muzzin flips the puck,
hits Kachuk in the chest, and then there's a scrum, as you would expect.
I think Muzzin knew that was coming.
Kachuk's furious.
Muzzin's laughing.
And did you see the – is it John Boy?
Yeah.
Oh, that was really funny.
I was so excited.
I like that tweet as well.
Did he?
Yeah, he did.
Oh, that's cool.
Okay.
I'm a big fan of John Boy's baseball videos,
so his hockey ones are so rare and i don't know if i've ever seen him do a leaf one
maybe it's great he might have done one for the david ayers game oh it was awesome it was so good
really well done and what what was you know what was very interesting from like a truly from a
hockey perspective is um you know going into this game i would have expected to call daniel
kachuk one of the top super pests in the league but i'm gonna take super out of the pest he is
not a super pest yet a super pest is unflappable adam adam not daniel
yo where is daniel kachuk man that guy's been screwing me up who is that guy
played for calgary i'm telling you okay checked him last game
matthew for god's sakes matthew kachuk what happened to daniel kachuk where are you
you guys look him up look him up here we go play for st louis he's 41 years old now
Okay.
Is he?
Wow.
Wow.
Born in the 70s.
70s baby.
Yeah.
So he played 19 games for the Flames, had 11 points, and they're like, yeah, fuck you.
Anyway.
Wow.
Wow.
It's like Josh Levo.
He's like our, it's like Josh Levo, except he, Josh Levo got to keep playing.
So I believe he is under the employ of the San Antonio Rampage as an assistant coach.
Oh, is that right?
Yes.
That is AHL.
Oh.
AHL.
Which means he must be the assistant coach of a guy who was actually one of the instructors at the adult hockey thing that I was at before they made hockey illegal in this country.
I don't know what you're talking about.
I went to skates once a week to learn hockey.
Sorry, there was a guy there who's on the rampage who was always like, all right, so here's our drill.
And he's showing a bunch of us who don't know what we're doing.
And he's just like, perfect edges on the rampage and in Oshawa.
Oh, this was in the summer.
This was in the summer.
And not this past summer. It was the summer
before.
I'm a great storyteller.
He lives in Oshawa and plays hockey
with you.
Were we supposed to know that,
Jesse?
I don't know why I brought it up!
My life
is causing regrets!
He must be the guy that I played hockey with
in the summer. What are you talking about?
I don't fucking know!
i want to die right now no it's a cool story no all my most embarrassing moments are public
they're terrible i think it was a great story it wasn't you know it jesse what was your favorite
part oh the part where he told us about the guy who's on the rampage that was my favorite part
it's in Whitby
the arena where you played hockey is in
Whitby
what temperature was it when you were playing
hockey
what does the sky look like
it's usually like overcast
because the weather is kind of shitty in this part of the country
the Iroquois sportsplex or whatever
that's where the Whitby Wildcats
play it sure is Adam
when the Wildcats take on the
Wildcats
adam you were making the wildcats always win yeah so matthew chuck back to my original man
remember adam's mistake that was so embarrassing
okay so so matthew chuck i would have like i don't think even brady's at this level because
i don't and i don't think that's fair to brady but i just don't think the sends are good enough
for brady kachuk to to get in people's faces and it to matter as much and that's that's just the
reality of the team that he plays for right now they'll be good eventually but matthew kachuk to
me is like the second coming or the next brad marchand and if we're talking about pests around
the league people that just make people angry make hockey normal calm hockey players angry
brad marchand's top of the list who else would you put on that list steve super pest oh that's
really difficult um there aren't that many left there's an element of that to travis connect me
game a little bit like a few guys in the flyers have like elements of that charlie mcavoy's got
elements of that a little bit for that a little bit of jake de brusque a little bit um it's mostly
teams whose identity is that yes tom wilson is not a pass um he's a bullet yeah he's not in like
the not in the not in the like he's just scary sometimes he's a pest in the same way that a
cannonball is a throwing knife like they're not right they're not no they're not the same ryan
reeves is not a pest he's just he'll he'll just heavyweight yeah punch so there are very few of
those guys and and a brad marchand is what i would call a super pest and there's a reason you call
somebody a super pest rather than just a pest super pests never get angry never get angry and
whatever you throw at them they throw right back and laugh at you and i would have thought matthew
kachuk was a super past especially with the battles he went with went into with drew dowdy
he always seemed to come out ahead you knew dowdy was bothered you knew it shook him up
oh it doesn't bother me don't want to talk about it like yeah it does drew the most easily rattled
guy in the league by the way he's he's gonna knock that off well he's 32 man i don't think
it's going anywhere way way too easy to antagonize way too easy to antagonize and and here in terms
of uh you're talking about the pest face yeah one of the most hateable pest face in nhl history
maxim lapierre oh he would do nothing they'd like they'd like show a bench shot of him and i'd just
be like shut up shut up max who are some other great pests that you can remember like really
great get under your skin like leo camarade for the leafs had that a little bit he has that a
little bit too i would say nazem kadri's a good pest but nazem gets mad he gets mad not a super
pest if you get mad you can't be a super pest yeah like marshand is he's just the difference
or sorry the similarity between marshand and kachuk is you're almost obligated to mention them
even in their quietest games yes marshand is on you every shift it's shit in the face off dot
whether he's taking the face off as a winger he's he's punching guys in the head i saw him do that
um he's tripping marner off the draw he's poking guys off the draw he's probably blowing in their
ear like lance stevenson he's just a nuisance a nuisance whereas kachuk
kachuk is too important to his team's offense and always has been but it's pretty important
he is now he developed into that though like he was kind of like secondary scoring whereas
keith kachuk or keith kachuk matthew kachuk came into the there's too many damn kachuks there's so
many matthew kachuk comes into the league and he's like he's vital to calgary's offense right
right away yeah right so he's more of a net front battle guy and i'm sure muzzin hates him because
they saw each other all game long and they saw each other in la muzzin being drew dowdy's partner
so you know there's that connection as well i forgot about that oh so here's the thing the
the thing that i think here matthew kachuk's gonna get there he's gonna get there but him
getting rattled by a little puck like if you if you did that to brad marchand brad marchand would
have would have dropped it and taken a slap shot right back at you and laughed and got off the ice
brad marchand never doesn't win those types of battles because he's the best at it where
matthew kachuk i think sort of showed his age and hasn't earned the elite level pest and he's right
there is he got rattled and he got really rattled like throwing water bottles and slamming the door
on your captain rattled and i don't think he knew giordano was there by the way i just think he was
slamming the door and wasn't looking up well adam what what made him so rattled was it just the puck
well so that is an interesting thing because rarely do you see somebody get that rattled over
it ultimately yeah it's a bit of a sign of disrespect but it's not like someone took a
slap shot after the whistle at your goalie's head you know what i mean it was it was a little thing
it was kind of an fu it and people like people from calgary or my dm's like what a dick move
and i'm like yeah i think that was the point he was trying to be a dick i won't fight you on that
but the to me i thought the reaction to it was outsized based on what happened why did he get
so riled up and pissed off after the scrum was over and elliot friedman had some insight into
this steve do you want to kind of do you want to kind of provide that insight well and it was
interesting to hear freed say it because the more i watched the clip obviously i watched the john
boy thing over and over again that's after after already watching the clip 10 000 times i'm looking
at the flames and it's not just that they didn't do anything they looked bored like it's after the
came after the game we're done here uh rasmus anderson was uh uh the only guy who i saw even
show like anger even was sean monaghan and who who grabbed you know in in his defense he did grab
a big piece of flesh there um holding mitch marner at bay like you know what i mean like
they just um they didn't back up their guy and you know well they didn't they didn't back up
their guy and i'm trying to they didn't back up the there was an incident oh you know what it was
it was shifley in the jets game and remember pionk was clearly in the wrong for what he tried to do
to marner yeah and then shifley shifley stuck up because he stuck up for his guy like people were
like why is he even doing that it doesn't matter if he's in the wrong like you stick him for your
guy it's our freaking water bottle it's our freaking water bottle which is exactly that's
exactly what shifley was doing um and calgary did not afford uh matthew kachuk who does
the heavy lifting physically for them they did not afford them the same uh courtesy they didn't
stick up for their guy at all all they did was grab muzzin what other tough guys around the ice
well yeah so it's an in hyman and but and really when it's the leafs there are two guys it's like
muzzin and um wayne simmons they didn't even shove anybody around so i'm gonna say um eric
francis was providing some insight on that and he said that this is something that like if matthew
kachuk is talking about this he'd be like what what battle were you guys talking about because
this happens to him all the time during games and to his teammates this is just a regular thing
so for them to stick up for him it's like it's nothing it's nothing new it's not like hey let's
go protect matthew because this this crazy thing's happening it's like oh that's happening again
now he's gonna get in this scuffle he's gonna get mad so this happens like he was saying six times
a week if they're playing a bunch of times so it's not a big deal to them so there's no need
to go fight for him it's not even fight it's like just show that like they have no reaction
because they're like oh matthew's doing his thing over there again but is that okay but like
so we were we were talking about the reaction to wayne simmons scoring right and the team's like
yeah because that's their guy is matthew not their guy so what else does what else does matthew
kachuk have to do for the flames for them we're looking at this from like hey we see calgary play
the leafs and this crazy thing happened with kachuk but they look at it as hey this over the
course of an 82 game season this is going to happen 200 times yeah but you're going to see
us a couple times in those 200 times like maybe we'll fight for him like 80 times but like another
120 like we don't show up whatever it is but this is a regular thing so it's not just this one
incident that we're seeing they're seeing it all the time so jesse let me ask you this is eric
suggesting that then that matthew was angry for a different reason because it doesn't if you go
back and you look at the footage okay based on what happened even like matthew kachuk does not
react like that normally that just doesn't seem stuff it was weird and i guess everybody loses
it from time to time so maybe it was that maybe he's frustrated maybe he's had a bad sleep whatever
who knows but like was eric saying jesse that maybe that that that elliot was wrong in that
assessment no it was it was in a conversation with uh merrick on uh hockey central and he was
just saying it was at the end of two straight games where you're losing to leafs and they've
had a not the best start to the season and they're going to hear it from the calgary fans and the
calgary radio people so it's that it's that pent-up frustration and it's just matthew being
matthew to them just reacting like how kachuk reacts when this normally thing normal thing
happens to him on a regular basis this this was the exhausting thing about the bruins and having
them in the division there was nothing you could do to uh to do to them and it wasn't just the
leafs it was every team they played especially when they were in their heyday 2011 2012 well
and again i would say 17 16 17 18 well yeah the stanley cup final at that point right there was
a scrum after every freaking whistle and they came out on top every single time and it wasn't about
the fact that they could win the fight it's they got into it every single time every single time
someone on the bruins had something to say every single time and they wore you down mentally the
leafs always looked gassed mentally against the bruins by game five game six and it was because
at like every minute is going to be a battle against the bruins every minute because it
doesn't stop at the whistle no even how do you budget your energy you can't you can't possibly
budget your energy and then imagine seven games of that oh holy shit like no wonder they had so
much success no kidding no kidding so it's anyway it was interesting to watch um i mean i don't
I don't pretend to read into this too much more.
I think Makachuk, to me,
he's the most valuable piece on that Flames team.
I don't think Goudreau or Monaghan are as good without him.
I think he makes everybody better.
He's the kind of guy I'd want on my team,
and I hate to play against him.
That's how you know.
I would say the same about Marchand.
I hate watching the Leafs have to go head-to-head with that guy.
But damn, would I ever want him to be a Leaf?
If that opportunity came up, I'd be like,
yeah, please, let's do it.
Nazem Kadri would still be a Leaf if he didn't get suspended twice.
Yes, it's true.
Think about that.
That's very true.
There's no Alexander Kerfoot.
God, that bothers me so much.
It bothers me too.
It'll never stop bothering me.
That trade had to happen, but what a bummer.
What a bummer.
So anyway, long story short.
It didn't.
It's Naz's fault.
Okay, fair enough.
A player who I'll love forever, but it's his fault.
Yeah, exactly.
Now we should mention that digit Murphy from the Toronto six is going to be
on in about 10 minutes here.
So I'm going to try to look through my stuff and see what we can get to
before.
Oh,
I got one.
Okay.
So did you guys know there was actually a trade yesterday?
Yes,
but I didn't really look at it.
So the,
so the sharks got defenseman,
Michael Garros,
the ducks got defenseman,
Anthony Levine,
and the sense got forward,
Frank Thomas and the sharks 2022 seventh rounder.
Steve,
what can you tell me about those players?
I'm going to be totally honest.
I've never heard of any of those people.
Well, that's because I made their names up.
Oh, my God.
So I'm sitting here like I'm positive Max Lajoie, I think, is one of the players.
And then you proceeded to not say them.
And I'm like, I don't know anything.
Here are the real names.
I should have made you sweat a little bit more.
But the real names are.
That was really good, Adam.
Sharks.
sharks get defenseman christian geros ducks get defenseman trevor karrick and sends get jap uh
jack kopaka kopaka i hope i got that right and the sharks 2022 seventh round pick via frank
saravalli on twitter now i'd never heard of any of those guys everybody was like oh there was a
trade yesterday it wasn't even news because no one knows who the hell any of these people are
so that happened um happy for all the teams involved i do wonder um like is like it sort of
does it sound like okay look at the teams involved here we got the ducks we get the sharks we get the
sins it's sort of like swapping deck chairs on the titanic at this point right it's like why did that
need to be a three-way trade you know you look at that you're like guys i'm sorry i can't just i
cannot give up christian geros like that somebody called the ducks we need to get them in on this
yeah let me like how did how does how does a frankly a bullshit three-way trade like that
happen but we can't make it happen with superstars you know what i'm saying yeah i'm looking and
there was a direct trade between the ducks and sharks like part of me was like oh maybe they
were avoiding dealing with each other directly uh i don't understand it i don't whatever
what but the sharks they do love this sort of thing they did it with uh hoffman remember
um and they love a three-way trade with the sins um they do they love it uh except one was
actually a three-way trade and the other was straight up stabbing them in the back but um
it's obviously relationship is not uh damage beyond repair they're still willing to make
trades with them and uh i appreciate them worse yeah without ubers and i appreciate that's an
expensive uber yeah uh and i appreciate them at least trying to uh make that trade interesting
i i guess um i i don't know if they did i think i i can't oh but they tried it's so funny with
nhl teams like because i you know that all three of those front offices like yeah we did good
we did really good and the rest of us are like what the fuck did you just like i don't even know
what any any what's happening here and i mean that's what you have to be if you're a hockey
person you gotta know like i know everybody and where they're you gotta be like pierre uh
pierre mcguire about it right you gotta know everybody where they play junior who their aunt
was like you've got to be that hardcore and every organization as i looked at that i thought they're
all pretty jacked today that they were able to make that move and the rest of us have no idea
themselves on the back oh guys christian jarros and i'm not saying he won't be good but who the
hell is that are you ready for me to actually try to make this a thing okay somewhat interesting
so the anaheim ducks acquire trevor carrick from the san jose sharks okay also part of the ducks
organization sam carrick former toronto maple leaf and i believe trevor's brother wow there you go
so that's super interesting i thought you were gonna right no and then the second part of the
trade okay fellas i got nothing i don't have i don't have anything for you there one day well
during one of our summer episodes i'd like to have on an nhl scout because i they probably have
such a wealth of knowledge and i just like to know what it is goes into their day and how many
of these guys they know and how in depth because it'd be fascinating to me i think it would be
yeah or it could be the most boring conversation any of us have ever had that too i'm not really
sure sometimes you get into the weeds with hockey you're like holy shit that was boring i can't
like systems sometimes i'm like oh i know some people love that but i'm like oh how far into
the conversation will we be before we discover oh this is a piece of shit conversation oh my god
i thought i fucking hate this oh this is terrible like we were less than five minutes in with gus
casaros all those years ago where i was like i would die for this man this guy knows everything
and i would die for him love him but like what if you know how far into you know well you know
as i met him and his dad's big oh oh shit oh god we're three minutes into a 30 minute conversation
with this guy we're in trouble he's already talking about big parents mom's pretty tall too
so uh it should be good you know he might oh god he's talking about both parents um now i do want
to break in with some breaking news before we bring digit murphy on in four minutes there's
some major news out of the nwhl today the metropolitan riveters have withdrawn from the
nwhl season uh this is the whole team the whole team the riveters have withdrawn this is from
the press released the from the 2021 nwhl season after several members of the organization tested
positive for covet 19 the decision excuse me to withdraw the riveters from competition follows
the league's medical protocols established for the season they go into the you know the fact is
priority of the health for nwhl the riveters and health officials have collaborated to bring every
member of the team home in a way that ensures their safety uh the team says we are heartbroken
um we're aligned with the league on this we can't wait to come back and compete again in season seven
And thank you to all of our amazing supporters out of an abundance of caution.
The league is postponing games scheduled for today and will resume play this Saturday, January 30th at 12 noon.
And I'm assuming you're going to be able to catch that on CBC and I believe NBC in the States and also on Twitch.
So pretty big news. Something to talk to Digit about. You have to wonder.
I mean, it's it's an infectious disease, right? Like these are not you can try to bubble all you want, but these things can happen.
And it goes to show, because they are in a bubble, goes to show how tight the ship must have been for the NHL to pull off three months last summer and fall.
NBA as well.
Like, yeah, yeah.
And you know what?
NBA as well, absolutely.
But credit where it's due to the NHL for managing that, really.
Because it's not easy.
And these guys, I mean, obviously they're away from their families and they're stuck in a hotel and everybody's like, oh, I don't feel that bad for you.
It kind of sucked.
um i think uh i think the nhl deserves kudos for that for managing to make that work and bringing
hockey back at all and i can tell you last year i think i mentioned this in the last episode of
2020 we got we normally get something like nine months of hockey in 12 over a 12 month cycle
we got five and a half last year five and a half months and you know we got january february march
and a half or half a march and then we got august september october so we got barely five and a half
months so the fact that they were able to give us those last three months it could have been nothing
it could have been two and a half so thank goodness for that uh we'll probably talk to
digit about that obviously i'm not sure what you can say beyond what the uh uh press release says
but that's i mean that's a huge blow for the nwhl which you know has this is a big season for them
this is a real big prove it season uh speaking of digit she's ready to go she's here hey pancake
time hey digit murphy uh with uh the toronto six i'm so excited to finally meet you steve's been
uh singing your praises and uh and of course the one episode we have you booked on i'm sick
with the stomach glue so apologies congratulations on your first win gotta know how that felt we saw
the dance oh my god i am having a blast i don't know if you can tell but um being behind the
bench again and being with these kids it's just uh invigorating it's igniting it's it's great for
toronto like i love toronto i i was i've been there since um october 4th and it's too bad it's
been on lockdown i can't wait to get back when it's uh you know full force because we will be
a force in toronto absolutely oh we know it two straight wins but it didn't it didn't start easy
in fact uh there there were a lot of a lot of hubbub on twitter about uh the first two games
going a little too familiar for some toronto hockey fans no kidding can you walk us through
the growing pains it was you know i mean as a coach i couldn't have asked for a better start
you know i think for the layman to watch it they're like oh they're terrible and for a team
that has never practiced together okay you're talking we have not even been in the same room
together you know we were 10 kids on one side 10 on the other because of covid we were practicing
outside in separate groups doing weight lifting in the snow like these kids don't even know each
other so we we didn't get together until probably the second week in january so we'd only have about
maybe uh maybe uh 10 practices or so so then when you get into real it's really hard to simulate
that game intensity so the first game we're like squeezing way too hard like we're like awful you
know like and i think we should have beaten the rivers if you looked at us top to bottom we're
better um so we use that as like hey guys look relax do your thing then we get to play the number
one seed minnesota okay they're awesome and like and we're like guys just stick to we did the weak
side exits like we wanted we were crashing the net we were drawing penalties our power play started
to click and then we got a little cocky we're like oh yeah we're good we're all that in a bag of chips
i'm like no no gotta finish the game and clearly you saw them catch up five one lead yeah but all
the cool stuff look at four on four we did the shootout we got to kick their asses because we
were like guys you have to finish the game okay then you saw everything take hold right then you
saw the next game we come together last night total adversity training we had no clue we were
going to play they showed up no this game was pushed up because there was some scheduling
issue with one of the teams i thought we still have a day off yesterday we're not supposed to
play back to back our kids were exhausted all right so we get in and you know we're down we're
down we got to come from behind we come from behind we hold the lead and we win so if as a
coach you can't you couldn't have asked for a better learning curve in four in four days so
I think that's what the layman's or the layman is missing when they see what what we're doing
how did it feel when that first goal went in in game two ah it it was like yes you know and it
was Eastie she's so awesome and and she's so giant I'm like hey Chara what's going on great job you
know and and it's just um like to make history in Herb Brooks arena is just um a dream come true
for me as someone that grew up in the 80s like we did Herbie's at Brown you know because of that
like they're like did you know you're just like Herb Brooks and I'm like maybe is that a problem
because you know i don't remember the dance scene from miracle no no no then the bonus dvd
you guys i will say someone asked me they go so you're gonna give the miracle speech i'm like why
would i give the miracle speech they should be giving the digit murphy speech so we own it here
baby we are doing the dance party speech and you know honestly my job as a coach is to keep my
players loose and just having fun because they're good and with women a lot they get all anxious
right and and if they're just focused on having fun and maybe you know during uh the tv timeout
we're focusing on the face-off play they play better you know um and it's just it's been
phenomenal we're having a blast what inspired the baby hands uh in the dance video that was going
around you know I'm gonna actually do a um a video about that because I've been asked a lot
Quinny comes up to me 23 she scored the game winner last night she's like ditch ditch here's
these the baby hands I'm like oh my god she goes you gotta do something doing the pre-game speech
with them I'm like okay so the whole time me and Spiros are sitting there like okay we got to come
up with something right I go okay I'm gonna have my hands in my pocket and so I'm gonna walk around
and then I'm gonna go like this with the baby hands I'm like oh but no one can see it so then
when the music came on we're like oh we got to clap the baby hands and that's how it happened
and then we went down and when the kids actually saw they were the mini hands they're like
how do you top that though you don't do it again so so what's we heard a little bit about what the
with the the nhl guys dealt with in in the bubble situation in terms of rules and that sort of thing
what are your rules like what is your what do your day look like other than you know playing
three three games in like four nights whatever so we're all in these like you can see my hotel
room back here we all are in single hotel rooms um when we got here we got tested um we walked
to the rink in you know socially distanced or you know we have like a little van um and then we just
play um and then we come back to the rink and the the food is all everyone has to wear masks
everywhere everywhere on the on inside the rink except when you're playing that's the only time
you don't have to wear it um and then um in the hotel you have to put gloves on and it's like um
buff like a buffet but you have uh your masks on and hand sanitizer and then you take your little
you know thing your your this is this like my little my little lunchy here okay all right and
you bring it back to the room and you eat in your room so like but what we've been doing is we've
having zoom meetings with the players even though we're in the same location we do meetings every
day with them we do all our video scout um on zoom so i mean it's a covid environment you know
so you just you adapt as a staff and as a team and our canadians guys it's so different in the u.s
we said the biggest threat to us were the u.s players in the united states because it's it's
different down here it's just different people are like out to dinner oh you know well and i'm
sure you saw the news the riveters have had to pull away pull out of the bubble so uh and that's
obviously it's it's tough for the league because this is there's so much great happening and it's
just a tough tough break right yeah and it's awful because um they were a good team right it would
have been great to have them in it um and it's sad when you just can't can't keep it together
you know and you just don't know it they came from new york like it's very highly dense densely
populated down there's a lot of cases so it is what it is like our kids are i'm not gonna lie
our kids are a little scared because we feel more safe in canada right but um they're troopers our
kids just they just come and they play and they flex and flow and they are up for any challenge
because we have warriors on our team um i gave them a i gave them a book at christmas time called
the warrior ethos and i made them all read it it's like this basic teeny book so they didn't
have to like do much academics sounds like my kind of book exactly you guys would like it
i'm sure we would that's as soon as you said that i'm like uh you and i'm gonna i'm gonna have to
this actually so it's a warrior ethos i'm not even kidding i'll send you one i i actually i
don't know the guy like gave me a discount uh oh did he yeah because i bought i because i bought
so many so what do you like about it like what what is it about that book that you're like you
the guys the players have got to learn this or read it just talks about a warrior mindset um
and it just talks about being ready for anything um and when you're a warrior you just go into the
battle and you focus on what you do best and you do you and that's that's been a big part of our
whole um mindset as a team like you do you and we all fit together into the common mission um and
when you have that warrior take no prisoners mindset you just you just roll because nothing
deters you um and that's kind of what we preach and it's not in like this you know it's more like
hey guys here's the rules that we're gonna go by let's all follow them like i'll give you an
example so last night our kids were exhausted they were so tired and um i'm telling you guys
something i've been in this locker room a long time my whole life and you have 20 minutes to
finish a hockey game you guys have about 10 shifts each left in you we're going to do it together
you know and we need to put the pedal to the metal every time you're out there because if you come
into this locker room in 20 minutes and you lost the game you're gonna be so upset with yourself
so fix it now work together depend on each other offense defense off new line offense defense off
new line. And when we pulled them together, uh, it would two minutes left. Um, Lisa was
drawing a face up, say face off play. And she said, look, I love Lisa. I love coaching with
Sparrows and Lisa. We have so much fun. Um, she goes, look, she goes, your job is to keep it down
there. So we play five on five. So they can't get the six on five. And they did that for at least a
minute and a half or at least a minute. So it was really, really fun to watch them actually execute
what we tell them that's what that's what's great about these kids i love coaching them they're so
fun boy you can tell i've i've i love watching you coach them i love hearing you talk about
coaching them this is fun i mean and that's the thing right like there's and and steve steve told
me this privately did you but but you know and he's been singing your praises for months and i
know we've been trying to get connected on a meeting it hasn't happened but the uh the thing
about you is that and everybody says this the infectious energy the getting people fired up
the positivity and pulling together a group of people that don't know each other and then and
that's what hockey is a game of mistakes right so we're talking about trust how do you instill that
in a brand new team well I think it's just about love right and and fun and energy and when I say
love I don't mean in a corny like you know sexual way you know it's love is just like giving like
you give people leeway to make mistakes you're not yelling at them you give them information
to just like i'm very black and white i'm like okay you're out you're in and they like sometimes
they get emotional no no no emotion like we're we're all on the same team here like you have to
i'm a mom right i have six kids and when you just give them the information then they have to
understand it they and then they have to learn about it and then react to the information so a
of it's just being straightforward honest transparent um and i coach relationship coaching
it's funny because i love spheros and lisa because they're technical and i'm a relationship coach
i'm like these two kids go together these don't you know this one's not doing well today you know
it just it's just really easy for me so when i pick up on signals from my players i think they
feel that love. Like, I'll be like, anything okay today? You know, it's like a, I don't know. It's
almost like your mom's coaching you in a, in a good way, not in a bad way. So I guess that's,
that's how we do it. And you know, the other thing I'm going to say, a lot of people think that by
being vulnerable or by being authentic or having fun on the bench is not very coach-like. Well,
who says what a coach is like? That pisses me off that people think you have to be coachy.
like you have to have a hat on like you see that jackass hat i wear like you know i'm freezing cold
it's functional i put my hat on i put another hat over it i don't wear gloves because i i lose them
like it's like i'm just real right and what's wrong with being real that's what i get you know
it's not about social media and what pictures you put up like so what if i look like a jackass
my kids love me whether i look like a jackass or look like a coach that's how you do it in my in
my world anyways digit we are gonna get along just fine yeah this is great i'm just having so
much fun i feel like anytime whatever your pre-game speech is can we just like listen in
because i want to hear it every time so you're building a relationship with your team uh this
whole time in the strangest environment that i've ever seen a team play their their first games uh
really but in these first few games what i've gotten to see from i guess the sidelines the
internet sidelines is the six building relationship with the fan base but this is it's also with a
fan base that you've never actually seen in person so what is what has all that been like and have
you been able to follow the kind of fanfare surrounding the six so far you know i like
sparrows laughs at me because he's like doing all the social media he's doing all the pictures
because he's like 35 like i'm 59 right so he's like i go hey spirits did you see that meme thing
and he goes did that happen four days ago i said oh i heard we got a lot of looks on that he's like
your other video is going viral on the dance machine one i'm like oh okay cool so to me i
love what i do and i can't wait to meet people and go out into the community and talk to them
and inspire them and empower them there's nothing more important to me than to look a little girl
in the eye and or a boy and giving them a firm handshake and giving them confidence like we used
to run hockey camps back at Brown and we used to call it daycare on ice because we had all these
little kids and we did like face painting we did like you know arts and crafts with hockey because
you know it's a woman's it's a woman's camp we had we had kids come at nine and they left at four
why because it's mother's hours but we used to teach them all these little things they would get
in line and they'd have to sign in they have to say their name you'd have to shake their hand
look them in the eye and some kids at the beginning would be like i'm like come on look me
in the eye and all those things are really important so i can't wait to do that in the
toronto community um for everyone's kids and and anyone you know anyone that wants there's so many
people that are depressed out there and they don't have a positive attitude like we want to shine the
light on those kind of people and use it use sports as the platform right well fitting it's
bell let's talk day here in canada as well and i guess it's bell let's talk day anyway uh anywhere
but uh that's a really i mean that's a poignant uh and timely thing to say right now uh well digit
listen we we want to catch up with you again as soon as we can whenever uh okay awesome she calls
me at like seven in the morning when i'm on my walk so you know you can't i'm always open for
you guys because i want to say thank you guys for amplifying our women's sports message because not
a lot of people do or appreciate what we do do so hats off to you guys as the media people that are
amplifying our message thank you so much we can't amplify uh what's not there so you're there and
you're putting on a great product so anytime digit yeah i think i have to get my daughter a
six jersey i don't know if they make them for 18 month olds though so yeah we have some stuff on
on the uh website so i'm gonna check it out i'm pretty sure they have onesies yeah okay perfect
maybe we'll do that digit thanks so much for your time digit murphy toronto six amazing uh
what the energy is just like wow incredible i i want to call her like when i'm having a bad day
like i wish there wasn't any covid so i could play catch with digit murphy i know
okay just tell her all my problems can we just talk about the fact that
we're between her her husband and their six kids they're almost a baseball team
like they are well they have a whole they have a whole lineup they her just her children alone are
uh three forwards two goalies and uh sorry two defensemen and a goalie yeah it's true just the
kids six children i i what a thing to say so nonchalantly i got six kids and i'm coaching a
hockey i'm coaching a professional hockey team that's in that's crazy that's just a special
person like that that's that's the kind of person that i that i i'm so jealous of her like i really
wish i could be that i can be that with jump cuts and coffee she just is that that's her entire life
she's that yeah i'm jealous jealous of that kind of person me too and i think uh i think it's gonna
be um i think it's gonna be fun watching this unfold like i it's just um somebody messaged me
on instagram the other day and forgive me because i never remember anybody's name i'm trying to get
back to a bunch of people and they said to they said like listen it's just nice to hear you guys
talk about games and i wrote back and said amen like really same because we spent so much time
last year talking about things that we needed to talk about things that were happening but non-hockey
things or non-hockey game things totally hockey things and it's nice to be able to get excited
about this game that we all love and and uh and it's nice to see someone who's more excited about
that game than i've ever been about anything in my entire life um like she's just uh that's that's
that was cool really really inspiring now i do got a team sorry when when the six score it sounds
like there's fans in the building like the whole bench loses their mind they do and you know what
it's it's inspiring to watch it's very very it's a lot of fun i want to ask you about this jim
rutherford stanley cup two times stanley cup winner jim rutherford by the way fame i like
hockey hall of fame actually no he's one of three because he won the one in carolina as well didn't
i think you're right actually and jim rutherford has does things that perplex you right there are
you know signing jack johnson of a five-year contract picking up cody cc for whatever reason
but then you know he goes and he wins cups and right and so ever take it away from him you can't
his criticisms uh are online but his name is literally etched into metal there you go and
if i were him that would be i'd have a ring on each middle finger and one of the coldest takes
that steve and i and jesse ever had was when we said in phil kessel's first season with the penguins
that jim rutherford would lose his job if things didn't improve quickly fired the coach new coach
takes over they're fine uh and they won back to back that was the hot dog year now um he resigns
for personal reasons jim rutherford seemed like the kind of guy even though he's in his 70s
that you would drag kicking and screaming away from the rink like literally he would be there
until he couldn't be there so instantly because of his advanced age and he is a bit older right
it's not unfair to say that he's like the second oldest gm in the league i think behind yeah
yeah so people were like health-wise are you okay and he's like not it's not health related it's
just personal reasons fine we would have left it at that except that colin dunlap uh who is the
morning show host at 93.7 the fan in pittsburgh who by the way shout out to uh all the stealer
fans who i was trying to put tune it in on the radio and uh they i believe that was the station
they had me tune into or wdave i'm not sure anyway long story short who was the picks the pittsburgh
radio guy we always used to make fun of mark madden who got into a fight with a pittsburgh
stealer uh a couple weeks ago tj watt oh yeah it was a tj yeah tj yeah so he basically he said that
he missed tj watt was so pissed that he he didn't even go to his exit interviews and tj retweeted
him and said uh yes i did with two different coaches actually so i who knows wow i'm sure
mark had his sources like i don't think he would just probably i don't think he would say that but
maybe he was wrong who knows they were wrong sources i mean they were wrong sources yeah
maybe it was like did he meet with mike tomlin the head coach and if the answer was no then he
probably went out and said well he didn't meet and whatever anyway long story short tj watts one of
the big players on their defense and they need him so you know we didn't want to start a controversy
there though colin dunlap who is the morning show host like i said wrote this today and this is very
interesting i am told by multiple sources this morning jim rutherford was working on a chris
letang trade to one of the teams that he can be traded to i guess he's got a limited no move
ownership look ownership did not want him doing this it forced an untenable situation so here we
are and we're talking when we talk about ownership we're talking about the mario lemieux group
so uh chris letang has this season and next left on a deal paying him 7.25
against the cap and in cash and he's got a modified uh no trade clause
there you go interesting there well and he's he's been in trade rumors for years though
so was malcolm too like like on and off like it it's it's crazy because it's eventually
going to happen and we were talking about a few years ago when i made my phil kessel trade video
in 2015 we were talking about well the penguins aren't getting any younger but like we were
talking about what part of their prime are they in are they in the middle of it or on are they
in the tail end of their prime none of them are in their prime anymore none of them they're still
really good but like letang has been better malkin has been better crosby still one of the best
players on planet earth has been better there's going to come a moment where the penguins are
going to have to decide what they're doing and it's not going to be a fun conversation
mark madden by the way for his his part i don't think the organization would take a stand against
jim over chris letang malkin yes not letang and i don't think jim tries to trade a core player just
seven games in i would think that if you're working on a letang trade has been going on for a couple
months oh at least because you're calling every team in the league and going you want chris letang
and then you're narrowing down and then you're trying to boost packages and play them off each
other it takes time and it's what i said um you know 7.25 in cap and cash that's a lot of cash
it's a lot of cash no a lot of teams can afford that so you got to think it's going to be one of
the richer teams willing to take that on very interesting situation i i can't imagine where
he would even go can't can't imagine so i don't know where boston is at but i know that they lost
chara and they lost crook and you have to wonder like letang's a big guy and he's a he's an
offensive guy i get it and he's not going to replace what chara brings but and i know they've
had some you know defensemen come in and and and fill some gaps but I wondered about Boston I just
thought it's it seemed and I know they're like just ahead of Pittsburgh in the standings I get
it I get it we trading interdivisional whatever it's COVID who knows who the hell knows but Boston
to me seems like the team that still got it up front and Steve you talked about your prime where
are you at in your prime the two best players on Boston are are Bergeron and Martian but for how
much longer and they do have roads too they are well i mean they're still pretty great but oh yeah
they're gonna hit that crossroads in the next couple years they're gonna have to make a decision
about and they do have young players coming up i'm not saying that but i don't know that they've
gotten marsh and bergeron level players coming up is that fair sure i mean posternak's still
pretty young but yeah like they remind me a little bit more of the 2016 and 2017 penguins
in that we were talking about, like, okay, if they do it,
I wouldn't be shocked, but what are they?
Interesting.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
What are they?
I wouldn't put LeTang going to Boston as making too much sense.
They got McAvoy up top there.
They need help on the left badly.
Well, or at least they need to replace what they lost on the left badly.
They might be able to do that internally.
They're trying that so far.
what about the rangers i was actually kind of thinking the rangers they've had a really bad
start yeah i was gonna say especially with the slow start maybe it's just something to shake
things up well and i wonder if like is there a left i don't know what the rangers left side looks
like offhand and i get pretty spitballing i don't know yeah now that rutherford's out is the move
canceled because ownership doesn't want it well i don't know it's yes yeah are we speculating on
something that's been shut down by the billionaires who own the team.
You know who just signed a new deal and has been such a pain in the ass
for the organization that he can barely get in the lineup?
Tony D'Angelo.
Yeah.
I'm not saying that's the deal.
I wonder, surely the Rangers have thought about it.
Surely the Rangers have been like, is this, do we need this?
And he hasn't been playing, right?
Didn't he like?
and when he has and when he has he hasn't been great um and so here's how the right side would
look for the rangers because you've got adam fox who's playing lights out jacob truba who's pretty
good yep always been pretty good and d'angelo who's in and out of the lineup right now who has
his internet persona aside a ton of talent so offensively offensively yes in his own zone he's
disaster he's a nightmare he's he's he's one dimensional player now that one dimension is
very good right but yeah he can't be dependent on in his own end yeah so it'd be there'd obviously
have to be salary going back the other way before everybody gets in our dms about like well it's a
it can't be a one-for-one i don't know man we're spitballing who would the team be who would the
team be is the question we're asking not exactly to the finite detail what the trade's gonna be
okay if you want if you want those types of predictions go check out uh the super cool
trade that the ducks sharks and sends um uh sends uh pulled off yesterday and see who predicted that
uh you just don't know the other issue is we have absolutely no idea who's on his
no trade list or even how long it is yeah because cap friendly sometimes surprisingly has that
yeah i always wonder how the hell they get that information because that is supposed to be private
to the contract like your teammates are not even supposed to know that um but here we are so
interesting if letang was on the block he's been on the block since 2015 at least oh my god you
know so who knows um and who knows what the return would have been and who knows what direction jim
rutherford was hoping to take the penguins in uh they're not doing that badly like it's not that
bad it's not hopeless they're fourth in the division i'll never i'll never willingly write
off the penguins ever again until they're out of it out of it if they have 10 games left and they
have to win all 10 with with malcolm and crosby you mean not betting against that now when malcolm
and crosby are no longer there then you can maybe you can you can maybe bet against the
absolutely but okay not me not again now adding on to that mike gillis notoriously uh well one
of the most successful president gms in history with uh the vancouver canucks had an incredible
six-year run not my listen i wouldn't have agreed with all the moves he made but you can't deny
what is it four president's trophies three president's trophies something like that that
they did it's pretty great at least back to back pretty incredible stuff that the penguins a decade
ago sorry penguins canucks a decade ago were and it's hard to believe it was a decade ago
can you believe that and what's funny is canucks fans well they put the downfall of the canucks on
him i'm not well they should i am not i'm not sure they're wrong they're absolutely right
he tried to turn them into the bruins instead of just being the canucks the wildest thing
honestly you play that series you play that series if you do it 50 000 times don decision style
the canucks win the majority of them yep but they didn't win but they didn't win they were up to
nothing sorry kadox fans i'm sorry i'm sorry so mike gill's proposal to the penguins to be the
general manager somehow leaked onto reddit i don't know how this happened and when it first came out
a lot of us were like that cannot be true right no one believes it real yeah i have been told
by a source that it is authentic so it's it's literally like a resume but almost it reads like
Like, I don't know if you've there's a there's a Dan Carlin episode about early empires like Bronze Age empires.
OK, and it reads like one of their stone tablet carvings.
So on. Yeah, well, it's just very much like because what they what they would do when they wrote down their histories was really just a big propaganda play.
So it'd be like and I went to this city and I burned and smashed it.
And then I went to this city and subjugated their people. And there my greatness was eternal and blah, blah, blah, blah.
Mike's is a little bit more on the hockey thing,
but let me read this first paragraph to you on,
this is the third page.
You can find this on Reddit, by the way,
the third page of the Mike Gillis proposal
to be the Pittsburgh Penguins general manager.
There are times when it is necessary
to put your head down and work as hard as you can.
However, if you don't look up and see what was happening,
sorry, however, if you don't look up
to see what has happened
and audit your performance and results,
you risk regressing rather than moving forwards
towards success. For both my personal and professional growth, the best thing that
happened to me was being fired as president and general manager of the Vancouver Canucks.
It gave me the opportunity to look up, reassess, and reinvent. Okay. Interesting. Move on.
And this is my favorite. For the past five years, I've reflected on my tenure in Vancouver,
which was highlighted by, and this is where it gets a little bit propaganda-y, which he should.
it's a resume and it's a good resume highlighted by two presidents trophies and a trip to the game
seven of the stanley cup final i examined the decisions that were made gained an understanding
of my faults and successes and set off to discover what it takes to build a championship organization
in today's world and then he said i metaphorically went back to school seeking wisdom in three key
areas organizational science technology and analytics and advanced human performance that's
actually four areas but no he counts technology and analytics as one area i know but they're
actually four i don't know why he does that it's and i went literally it says organizational
science comma technology and analytics comma i mean technology and analytics are completely
different things right here sorry sorry he continues i went searching exploring looking
for what i wanted to find and sooner or later i came across it the hut belonging to the legendary
luke skywalker he milked some giant animal i had never seen before in the star wars universe
and he taught me the ways of the force sorry like what the what is he talking about i know i know
uh rather than confine my scope to specific disciplines i sought out the finest leaders
and the best practices in leadership analytics scouting and player development culture and
communication and other areas wherever i could find them this is so embarrassing well it's
embarrassing your cover letter made it online yeah like that's the thing it's not feel bad
i mean listen you're a bully i'm a bully you know it take it takes more than a resume to
interview for a position this hot you have to make a presentation yes this is his presentation
and it reads like yeah like somebody was making their cover letter and nobody ever wants to show
their friend their cover letter or any of that stuff like you give it to somebody to proofread
but you're still a little embarrassed about it and then now that this is on reddit it's it's
have either of you ever had a group job interview no no it's a horrible experience
that sounds terrible yeah because you are you're well aware that all of you are lying you're all
lying you're lying liars and you're also aware that you're competing with each other
and the two people so i was applying with two other people to two people there were two people
doing the job interview and i was and there were two other applicants and it was just it was the
worst experience of my entire life and but my application was not 27 pages long and on reddit
right into the pittsburgh was this when you were interviewing to be a fan intern and then you got
one of the basketball players wrong and then somebody gave you a hint about it no that's a
different story this is uh i did this twice to get into the zoo and i didn't get in the first time
it's humiliating all i did was talk about my high school play that i did with adam because that was
all i had done with my life up to that point i was 16 so so steve's in the meeting 15 steve's
in the meeting for the zoo and here's here's the sentence that he drops when you run a meritocracy
like i ran people got to say what was on their minds and it was appreciated i like the idea of
getting to run another group i was right of getting another group of people together to create a team
that can do special things like go to the llama exhibit now that is actual quote from him and the
thing is yeah no no not the llama but everything until the llama exhibit was real
um the reality is you know what like it's not this is like i look through it and i'm like
i don't hate anything that he's written here there is a lot of corporate jargon it's a lot of just
word salad word salad word salad which you know corporate people like um we see it a lot like we
worked jesse you and i've worked just he's only worked for one corporation we've worked for two
uh one of the major media corporations i work for bell i'm giving you a hard time
can we do the leadership tenants oh you want to do that yeah what are the leadership tenants
people you know this is how it works in a corporation when they're big right
so leadership tenants roles and responsibilities roles and responsibilities where is that jesse
uh page uh 14 that is wild that is too long oh god there's 10 too long didn't read all right
that's the penguin's response my 10 leadership tenants are we going through all of these i don't
have to read the whole paragraphs no no okay oh dear you ready number one think long term
if you're thinking in terms make sure they're long number two innovate
leaders encourage and incentivize in innovation or innovative thinking from their team and demand
it from themselves number three collaborate means he's going to work with you hi i'm mike
gillis i will work with you and we will work together towards another cup in pittsburgh
hire and trust the best i actually kind of like that a lot of managers hire people and then try
to do their job for them you got to trust the people that you hire so that's a winner for me
uh never turn off
if it would be way better if he said never turn up learn how to never get turnt get your brain
to sleep in quadrants like a shark never sleep is that how sharks sleep yes and they keep moving
they can't stop moving or they'll die you didn't know that you didn't know that about sharks they
don't sleep well they technically sleep a quarter brain at a time in the furious
wow they're literally the vin diesel of the sea it's incredible
you almost have me so we should we call him should we call him mike the shark gillis just
because he never shuts it down he's applying to the wrong team adam mike jaws gillis we should
call them jaws you know because we can't call them the shark the sharks exist right you're right
it couldn't it couldn't work every press conference he just has someone annoyingly walking by him
no they should when they try drag him out for the press conference that music should just play in
the background and then all the reporters go oh shit that's mike's music you know uh now uh the
next one take risks well you have to do that as a general manager be accountable earn trust be
hands-on be transparent produce results listen the presentation isn't bad and if you're looking
for a high-level executive position currently you should probably take some hints from this
i mean listen the guy did head up the canucks during an extremely successful run probably
knows how to put together a presentation you guys you can debate and and i know there's a lot of
people that are not Mike Gillis fans on Twitter. And I think for reasons that, you know, based on
his past, I get it. He's saying he's changed, but I can change. I can learn analytics and technology
and know that they're the same thing. I know that they are the same thing. You may differentiate
them, but I might Gillis say they're the same. And he's learned, he says, and it'd be very
interesting to see what the reaction from the Lemieux group would be with something like this.
Don't you think? I'd love to know what they thought of this. Is this considered a good
presentation is it considered okay is it bad like what how do how do they look at i just think it's
such a tough i mean i don't disagree with what he's doing it's just such a tough if all you're
doing in your application is talking about what you got wrong before you know well he wasn't he
did say that he won you know got to game seven and got a couple president's trophies yeah and
then what he said well then he said here's how i've grown it's good it's good it's what he should
be doing i'm just saying i'm just saying if i'm the penguins i'm like he's talking about how he
was wrong a lot he's he's talking about oh listen you're not getting shitty gillis right here
you're getting new innovative not shitty gonna win gillis not shitty gills what if you're looking
for someone who won't turn off oh then you got your man well jesse you know what sharks have
gillis oh no i have a son have i mentioned it i have a son wow i have a father if you dislike
this video because of that comment i understand i get it i get it i totally get it um yeah listen
i i can't like the thing is i'd love to be able to go through and really tear this apart we're
we're kind of making jokes at its expense but it's actually pretty well done and uh given what
you know what a corporate environment looks like now is mike gillis going to be uh their first
choice probably not but the list of candidates that they had out there that nbc threw out there
i believe holy it wasn't great it was not great we had john ferguson jr we had peter shirelli
we had mike and a few other names not great mcguire yeah pierre mcguire because why not
because one of these days
if it had been tsn pierre mcguire would have been on the list but uh
that is bell employee adam wild saying that well i mean they did pump his tires a little bit right
come on and that's okay that's your guy but like how many how many how many gm and coach rumors is
pierre mcguire going to be involved in before he actually like this is what it's been what
almost 30 years since he coached in the league you know we were sticking we were we were talking
about the flames and sticking up for your guy i want i think adam wild should get the penguins gm
job you think yeah why he's got he's got roots in pittsburgh yeah he's a big steelers fan uh-huh
what else read so many history books what are adam's 10 uh pillars of success
oh jesus oh man it's a lot of pillars man how big is this building
the acropolis like what is this freeze your genes use every part of your giant brain
sleep in quadrants um never stop moving or your fridge yeah empty fridge at all times
My assistant GM is just a bottle of Cholula, you know,
things of that nature.
Best of luck to Mike Gillis and everybody else who's applying for this job.
Sign no players with a butt bigger than mine.
I must have the King, but if you are,
if you are the guy leaking this,
you're pretty high up in the Penn's office. Are you not?
so how do you go about getting mike gillis's personal documents like who gets that not many
i don't think not many people are getting that and when mike gillis if let's say he gets hired
he's gonna know that somebody he worked with leaked his resume there's a fun environment to
walk into maybe it's like maybe it's on like a lower level where it's like an assistant who's
in charge of gathering all the resumes you know could be and i wonder then just as a question
is that person not a little nervous right now oh yeah because you gotta cover your tracks that's
the thing about the internet you always leave a trail always and if they want to they could find
it doesn't matter how good you are like i don't think that these these are some like i don't i
doubt the person that leaked this is some in like oh my god kind of crazy internet genius so i hope
for their sake i mean pretty big risk doing something like they're not the fedex driver
going oh man he left this 27 page job application under the mat and i had to share it with the whole
world yeah it was julian assange and edward snowden they came together and they leaked this
he's just he's just always after mike gillis for some reason edward snowden relatively nice guy
but mike gillis i'm gonna fucking take you down said edward snowden from russia
he's just a huge flames fan yeah holds it against the canucks dominating those
go Canucks
go Canucks my ass
I'm Edward Snowden
is it the ruffling his collar
I like that reality
whatever that reality is I want to live in that one
that's a fun reality
hey quick question for you
I've been meaning to talk about this 8-1 win aside
just
and I want to be short on this
is it time to freak out about the Canucks
or is it too early
because I'm still
I'm riding the line here of, like, I know they won 8-1,
and I know Canucks fans are going to be, well, we won 8-1.
We're great.
You beat the Senators.
Like, come on.
And I know the Leafs lost to the Senators,
but the Senators are not great, and you know that.
That's why we were mad.
Yeah, that's why we were upset about it.
Exactly.
Nate Schmidt's not, until last game, I guess, looked like Nate Schmidt.
Quinn Hughes hasn't looked like Quinn Hughes.
There doesn't seem to be – there's something missing for the first eight games.
is or whatever it's whatever they've played eight one win aside and i know that counts for them
what have you seen from the canucks what do you think's missing and is it time to freak out no i
think sometimes you just have a nightmare start and quinn hughes if you look at his uh you know
just easy stats he's got seven points in eight games and he's a minus seven he's a lot more
likely to stay closer to seven points in eight games than he is minus seven in eight games over
the course of the NHL season that ship will be righted Elias Pettersson has had a nightmare
start to his season you can be pretty confident that that ship will be righted um goaltending
is still an on and off question mark for them and we knew it was going to be um but they're not
getting big enough performances from the most important parts of their lineup but they will
okay and if they don't that's the story uh but uh Quinn Hughes Elias Pettersson I don't know if you
could pick two players better to bet on um so they I don't know I can't tell you if they're a great
team but I do know that they're better than what they've shown it seems to also be uh some sort of
semblance of like circumstance like they started the season four games on the road and then they
go one in three in those games and then over the course of their first nine games in the year
they've scored five goals at least five goals four times like that's that's a pretty good output in
terms of scoring and they're just not getting enough defense in a lot of those games so it just
it seems like what's happened over the last like little like five game stretch where they're like
three and two that seems more of the Canucks than their one and three start right yeah I think
they're going to be fine and the schedule so all over the place too right like you know toronto
is playing its ninth game tonight montreal is its seventh calgary's only played five you know
like it's it's it's still hard to know um you know what is uh like exactly what these teams
are even though we're about 10 of the way into the season who is anybody right now who is anybody
exactly exactly toronto's off to a good start montreal's off to a good start winnipeg i told
you off to a good start and vancouver's in a playoff spot at the moment so it's not it's not
that bad for the canucks now um i do want to move on to an interesting story brewing in st louis
vince dunn who is was considered a pretty big part of their defensive future now they do have
some pretty strong players up front uh falk uh now tory krug and uh and of course um oh my gosh
why am i blanking on this falk tory krug there's other there's other defensemen on that team and
they're good vince dunn has not been playing very much he got um for a guy that scored i think 20
goals of the last two years less than two million dollars and this is a defenseman and in an article
in the athletic they actually talk about openly how vince dunn maybe hasn't been all that great
about pre-game prep and craig berube uh obviously he's been in communication with him i believe
their last practice they had a chat afterwards but he is not drawn in very often and they've
had other defensemen come in there obviously robert portuzzo is there uh i don't think robert
portuzzo would be considered a part of their long-term success but there are other players
in this organization who are stepping up and frankly um vince dunn is getting beat on things
that he shouldn't be beat on uh carl gunstrom is sorry carl gunnarsson is in the lineup and
I just saw that.
Utterson, who is still playing hockey somehow,
and Nico McCullough, who is a rookie,
has stepped up and been in the lineup.
And Bortuzzo has been in the lineup over Vince Dunn.
That's a pretty big deal.
And I wondered if, you know,
obviously you want to give a young player time
to sort themselves out.
Vince Dunn's won a Stanley Cup.
He's played over 200 games.
He's not that young.
And I wonder with a team like the Toronto Maple Leafs,
who also have a defenseman
in somewhat of a similar situation,
Travis Dermott is not the kind of guy
that doesn't prepare for games there are brain farts with travis dermot but he's developed well
but this is a big season for travis dermot huge and if i'm if correct me if i'm wrong vince dunn
is a right-handed shot defenseman uh he let me look i think he's a lefty but let me check
what does he play what does he play um and they were drafted very close together in 2015 if i
remember correct oh he shoots left okay well i wondered if if there is a change of scenery
needed later on in the season if a vince dunn for travis dermot deal doesn't make sense
it saves the blues about a million dollars because travis dermot makes i think 750 and
vince dunn's at 1.85 he's he's under 900 grand i know that yeah okay so i you know i wondered if
there was some sort of move to be made there they're drafted the same year maybe they need
a change of scenery um and maybe i don't know like it it seems like both players might get exposed
anyway in the expansion draft so it's sort of like do you want to if you're the leafs i mean
you don't want to lose travis dermot for nothing but who else do you want to lose for nothing you're
gonna have to lose someone the other interesting thing brewing here is i don't think sheldon
Keefe sold him this whole Mikko Lettinen thing.
He barely
played him in the third.
He got into
the lineup over Dermott, seemingly
kicking and screaming.
I was all
for that decision, and it's nothing against Dermott.
It's you have too many guys, which
when was the last time the Leafs were in this position?
We haven't even talked about Rasmus Sandin.
That guy's buried.
That guy's under the earth.
I don't know how he's going to get
in the lineup and when he's going to eventually get grumpy about it to me this is it's an
interesting theme with like the past month or so where we're seeing a lot of players like good ones
uh openly want out and i wonder if this is you know we were talking about mental health today
and everything uh no one is the same person they were a year ago no one and i think a lot of people
are looking at life with and their priorities are different and maybe it's not that deep
maybe i'm making too much out of this but dubois and linea and vince dunn and i want to know who's
next like i know there are always players who aren't totally happy about their situation and
they want out and this and that but i just i just wonder if this is the continuation of what is
going to be a larger trend um just players wanting out players changing their priorities wanting to
go somewhere else like i'm just looking this guy had eight points as a sophomore defenseman in the
blues uh cup run like this this is such a good player he's he just turned 24 it seems wild to
me that they would even consider this especially forget the fact that carl gunnarsson's 34 years
old he's probably not going to be around for much longer either right yeah you're replacing him with
who exactly like long term i'm saying uh yeah that's a it's a very strange one and i don't
think i understand it it seems like with dubois and with line a it seemed like the better idea
was to fix the situation rather than move on surely the better situation here is to fix the
situation rather than move on right and they're putting it it seems like they're putting that on
the player like it's time for you to fix this and you to earn this i mean it's a good problem for
for st louis to have when you have a guy of vince dunn's talent caliber not able to make the lineup
says a lot about your lineup they're a good team of course of course but there's obviously
something here i don't think it's that he's just straight up not good enough and st louis is not
suffering because of it they are currently uh second in their division so two points behind
the knights for first not bad not bad to start the season oh and petro just making the wickedest
mistake against his whole team oh yeah yeah squeezing that squeezing the stick a little
bit too hard okay so those are all the things i wanted to get to if you quickly want an explainer
on the whole games uh game stock thing or game stop thing do you want to quickly do you want
to quickly run through that i can do a breakdown and then just throw it to you guys because i think
you steve and adam you guys represent the two sides of everything that's going on here like
you're kind of like the person who's the lamest lame person who's like hey i don't really not
like lay person lay person lame but a little lame a little a little lame i'm a little lame
the lay i'm in a toy room i get it room person who's like hey what's going on here what are
all these fucking numbers and adam's like hey i'm gonna invest in gamestop tomorrow and be a
now plus here's my house so so i think it'd be interesting to hear your uh perspectives anyways
okay so about two years ago there's this reddit uh subreddit called wall street bets and about
two years ago people started this conversation about hey we should start betting on uh uh
gamestop because everybody knows gamestop you get eb games in canada became gamestop up here
because it was it was uh trading under like 20 and this guy named ryan cohen who was the founder
of chewy.com which is a website where they sell just pet stuff like food pet food and pet toys
he made an investment into gamestop stock so and he's always looked at as like hey this guy knows
what's coming next it might be a good move so like people started this moon but hey let's buy
GameStop stock. So now over the course of last year, the Reddit, the WallStreetBets subreddit
has been pumping more and more money into GameStop. And by the end of 2020, they put so
much money into it that the stock came up to about, it was like 1200% higher of where it should
be. So it was trading under $20. And now it was at like $114 per stock. And if you're not familiar
you're with stocks you're just buying the people are just buying stocks and game stock and that
pumps up the number so wall street seeing this and the big hedge funds are where they were in
2020 shorting the game stock stock so why because they thought the stock was going to fall so when
you're shorting the company doesn't make money steve overall it does not make any right so
game stop wasn't projected to make money until 2023 the ryan cohen the guy mentioned from
Chewy.com. He was going to go in. They were going to turn this into a more digital environment.
They're going to sell more games online. They're going to have a whole business model. And they're
supposed to make money eventually. But not now. It's supposed to be a failing company. They can't
even open their doors. It's a pandemic. So where it was at under $10 was where GameStop should be
in terms of market value. But because all of these Redditors are throwing money at this company,
the value just keeps going up. So all these hedge funds over the course of 2020,
they were doing the right thing and shorting the stock because it wasn't supposed to be successful
and it's supposed to keep falling because it's a pandemic. And shorting the stock means that
they were buying it from a broker. So they were like, they were kind of renting the stock from
somebody and then they sell back that stock to the broker at a certain date. So they'll buy,
say they buy this stock, the GameStop stock at $10 from this lender. They say, Hey, we're going
to, we're going to, we're going to give you all this money for GameStop stock at $10. And on
January 28th, I'm going to give you back the stock at whatever it is at market value that day on
January 28th. So I bought it from you in June at $10. And in January, I'm going to give it back to
you at whatever it is on in January. So you say, okay, I'm going to make this bet. I'm going to
lend you the money because i think hey maybe it might go up and you think this is i'm this is easy
money because it's going to go down so when i sell it back to you you're i have to only pay you five
dollars because that's what's going to be worth in january and i bought and you gave me the money
when it was worth ten so essentially you're betting on the stock to fail exactly so all
these redditors gambling yes that's what it is that's what buy that's what investing is
literally gambling because you don't know what's going to happen so all these billionaire hedge
funds, bet in 2020 that this stock would fall. And so they were going to short it and take all
this money from these lenders to buy the stocks. And then in January or whenever their due date
comes, they got to sell it back for whatever it is in market value. So all these Redditors,
they have been just buying GameStop stock on these trader apps like Wealthsimple or Questrade.
And Robinhood is the big one in the States that everyone's using. So all these Redditors pumped
up the value to where it's 1200% overvalued. And it's worth so much money now. So it was it was it
was a 220 bucks. And now it's at 350. There you go yesterday, but 346. I was listening to the
market close yesterday. Unbelievable. So these guys, just these guys are just average dudes on
their phone, buying this buying $5 worth of stock. And now it's worth $150 or $300, whatever it is
that they're making all this money, because it's overvalued. And all these millionaire head funds
are losing it because they shorted it. And now they're holding all this stock that they have to
sell back at this new higher value. So Robinhood, an app that the majority, I think it was like 70%
of all of these trades that are coming in from the average Redditors, they're doing it on this
app called Robinhood, where you can buy and sell stocks. Robinhood, overnight, they stopped the
selling of GameStop stock on the app. So you stop the buying, sorry. So you could only sell it back
to the company and then it would push the value down so they're in the game they're rigging in
the game to help out their hedge fund buddies because they're like hey you need to fix this
because everyone's using your app to screw with the stock market so they said we're going to stop
the ability to sell this app and not only uh game stock stock but also amc was one of the next
targets by the subreddit wall street bet so they've also stopped stopped that so that's essentially
everything and we're sitting right now at the point where it's still you're still unable to buy
um game stock stock on robin hood they haven't re-enabled it right and so other people are
trying to develop other apps quickly to be able to fix this and the the person who we should be
most excited about their involvement is jaw rule because it's not it's not it's not a meme he's
literally starting his own app it's called um fire festival icon you can go to icon.live where
you can it gives creatives monetary freedom and he's been on television like the dave chapelle
skit people have been asking hey ja rule what do you think how does this on television pumping up
his app so yeah what do you guys think of the situation money is fictional like this is
ridiculous this is how this happens every day i know it happens every day but it's good like
because one of the one of the main pieces of criticism i've seen about this is well no this
has happened every day and this has happened for years and years okay now maybe can we re-evaluate
that this is the way it should work
isn't this silly
isn't this freaking silly
now it's also hilarious
because a bunch of people
who it sounds like have abused
the system for years are about
to get screwed
well yeah so there are hedge funds
talking about going to the American
government and asking for a bailout
have fun with that
a bailout for what
you lost
You fucking lost.
What is a hedge fund?
What is a hedge fund?
A hedge fund is a grouping of, well, money and stocks and that sort of thing that are supposed to perform.
So basically, you give your money over to these, and they manage your money for you, and they grow your money.
And there's hedge funds that can guarantee, I don't know, 10% a year, and you pay a fee on top of that.
So they take your money, they invest it.
Then they make money off of the money that you're paying them in fees.
and then they invest their own money in it
to make money off that as well.
So on what grounds would they need a bailout?
Or, well, I'm sorry,
on what grounds would they deserve a bailout?
Their suggestion is that if they fail,
it would be catastrophic to the American economy.
And people have real objections with that
because they don't want public money,
A, going into these hedge funds
that have been fucking around for years
with stuff like this
and have expected that things
are just going to go their way.
If it's truly a free market,
you let it go, you let them fail.
um and uh and and you know this is the thing the free market principle has come back to bite these
guys because they're all free market we're you know we're we don't want any we don't want any
government intervention until it goes against them and and so like let me read you a quote so
on cnbc this morning uh 935 pacific a uh new york hedge fund billionaire join them no no no we don't
need the quote i am gonna play you that audio you got the you got the audio leon cooper man
leon cooper man steve he's already a billionaire he's already the dude with the white sunglasses
uh no no no no this guy this guy is he's ancient but he's already a billionaire and he runs one
of these hedge funds that's going to be completely fucked by this okay so here's what he had to say
jesse go ahead the reason the market is doing what it's doing is people are sitting at home
getting the checks from the government okay and this fair share is a bullshit concept it's just
a way of attacking wealthy people and you know i think it's inappropriate we all gotta work
together and pull together the reason we all gotta work together and pull together
he's a billion dollars what a communist i did you all hate socialism right you get it get him
get that guy we all got to work together f you go out and get a second job there what's his name
what's his name leon cooperman leon go out and get a job there leon but i am having a hard time
feeling bad for leon do not care if you don't care dust would come off yeah he's he's been in
that office for at least half a decade um but you know the thing is oh they're sitting at home with
their checks they're sitting at home with their checks i love this universe where these people
think that people get checks and just have the check they just have it they don't have to spend
it on anything they just get to have it the rent's free their electric's free their water's free
everything's free they just get to have their check it's great i get two thousand dollars a
month from the canadian government and i just get to have it i just get to keep it i hang them all
on the wall and i'm running out of space i run as you should see the other wall you think i got a
lot of figures oh the serb checks just piling up high well and to give you an idea the canadian
government gave out two thousand dollar checks to anybody who needed it every month the americans
have managed one two thousand dollar bailout one didn't they get the second one no the first one
wasn't even two thousand dollars oh wow but i thought there was a recent one there yeah that's
the two thousand dollar one oh jesus christ so there was one in like the spring now oh i'm not
going to play politics on this one because it was rang and that's fucked well it's the wrangling
between the democrats and the republicans that slowed it down let's be honest yeah and i think
the democrats were trying to deny the republicans a win and they kind of got in the way and and it
was originally going to be twelve hundred dollars and then trump even came out and said it should
be 2000. And the Democrats are saying it should be 2000. And I don't know on that one. I think
it was more American political parties getting in the way of the American people needing this
entire conversation. It's just money is made up. It is money made up. I mean, think about,
OK, they're pieces of paper. It's perceptual value. A twenty dollar bill in real terms is
not more valuable than a fifty dollar bill. It just says 20 and 50 on it. The perception is its
value that's the reality that's how economics has worked for forever anyone is it going good
how is it i think it's hilarious that this guy got so mad and and and the thing is is that like
the reality is this segment of the population that deals in this arena have closed the doors
since cornelius vanderbilt and his buddies i don't even know who that is but i can tell he's old
Well, we're shorting each other on railroad stocks back in the day.
This is, this was a, this is just, this is our crew.
You're in this crowd or you're not.
And what they don't like is that technology has leveled the playing field.
And the reality is to corral that many people to get that much stock is not an easy feat.
And there has to be significant anger in the marketplace for people to be able to band
together like that for no other reason other than fuck these guys.
Yeah.
And the hedge funds know that they've got an advantage
because they've got the money to go after politicians.
They've got the money to go after apps like Robinhood.
And they also are far more united in their purpose.
Whereas you've got a bunch of people on Reddit
who decide one day, yeah, I'm bored of this.
Then all of a sudden this goes away.
But for some, because this, because, you know,
the 2008 crash happened, nobody fucking went to jail.
And now it's happening again,
or their lunch is being fucked with for like six months.
Not even six months, really.
It's just been this past week
where things have really taken off.
We're messing with them for a week
and this is how they react?
Boy, it's a really interesting,
forget the money part of it.
The reaction, the human being reaction,
you realized how divorced
from everyday reality these people are.
And I think Robinhood is gonna have
some serious explaining to do
based on what they've just pulled.
That is total bullshit.
So the latest update from Richard Southern, who's the business guy at 680 News in Toronto.
I love Richard.
Unbelievable human and his knowledge is crazy.
So he just reported that GameStop closed below $200 because of the trading apps that stopped them from being able to buy it.
So it's down 43.1%.
1%.
Blackberry, which was also another one of the Reddit's favorite to pump up because it was a failing business, is down 40%.
And AMC, the movie theater franchise, is down 56%.
So these guys, like, it worked, but I think they need to be held accountable because you can't legally stop people from trading.
It's actually illegal.
It's market manipulation.
It's 100% market manipulation.
To say that people are – these hedge funds are claiming that the Redditors are manipulating the market illegally.
They're not.
They're doing it completely legally.
No, and you are manipulating it apparently legally by shorting it.
How is shorting it a thing?
It's so made up.
Right.
They're made up rules.
Even Elon Musk tweeted today.
He's like, you can't sell a house or a car that you don't own, but for some reason you can sell a stock you don't own.
Yeah.
And Adam, when you're putting in perspective of like Vanderbilt, this is a centuries long fight against the working class and the rich.
Like this is just pent up rage.
And like you said, a lot of the smart talking heads on these networks like CNBC are just explaining that the Internet and technology has even the playing field where regular people have the same information and technology to trade like these billionaires.
And they're upset and they're throwing their piss in their pants over it.
Well, you think about it.
Just think about it in these terms.
There is a reckoning coming for universities and people don't talk about this enough, but every book that was only ever available in a library or on a scroll or that you had to pay $500 for, you can find for free on the internet if you look hard enough.
all of that knowledge. Now you may not be able to put it, put it together in the same sort of
cogent way that you can at university that you get at university, but all the books that you
read at university are now available for a low cost online. And that is huge. People don't
necessarily need that type of education the same way you need the connections, which is what those
schools, those Ivy league schools offer. But if you can, if you're intelligent enough, you can
absolutely read your way to the top and do pull these things off without sort of any formula
education and that spooks people that's really that upsets society that upsets the way things
should go yeah what's that everyone's good will hunting yeah yeah things have actually become
fair where people can live the american dream and you work up your way to the top and then
now it's not fair because robin hood just shut the fucking right yeah and now they're reacting
my first year of university which is cheap by the way a bunch of americans are about to freaking
faint but my my first year of university was 5100 canadian wow my fourth was 62
that's crazy that it went up that much in four that's it that's it if you're not for what if
it's 100 grand i think for for a bachelor's one one thing americans like it get yourself some
canadian friends just to talk to them about the differences because whenever i hear about you
going to school or the doctor i want to die yeah i remember an american friend of mine was like so
you guys had the baby and you just left we're like yeah my sister spent the first four months
of her life in the hospital and our family in florida was like did you remortgage the house
no we just simply got our daughter to live because society gives a shit like why and
this will make americans laugh everywhere when when we were in our first year of university
um steve and i um the am i only year of university um the uh quebec had um quebec's
highly subsidized education much more than we are and the the tuition in quebec at the time
went from 2000 to 2500 a year and the students took to the streets and i'm not talking about
a little protest because in quebec they don't do a little they burn shit down there were fires on
the streets in montreal for a 500 difference it's crazy and i was like that's that's a third of what
i paid and i'm next door it's a 500 difference but the percentage is wild wild and and that's
and that hence the protest but you understand you see like if you're listening to this as an
american you must be going what the hell man what the hell richest country on earth don't pay for
your own education pull yourself up by your own bootstraps until you're taking my bootstraps and
then i'm gonna shut your app down then i'm gonna be upset yeah so very fascinating time that we
live in i remember having teachers like who were not close to us in age openly talking about their
student loans and how they still had to pay them like when we were in high school and i was like
what what is being an adult like it made me not stoked to go into the adult world
while i was still in high school man anyway sorry we're getting into too much but what i learned
from all this is money is made up and i don't feel bad for any of the people who have benefited
for generations from a system that is made up and they rigged the makeup there was also a class
action lawsuit filed in new york today against robin hood because of them stopping the trades
good and one of the craziest things is the domino of when you go through uh the class action lawsuit
so one of the tweet replies is the u.s attorney for the southern district of new york is chuck
Rhodes Jr. He is married
to Wendy Rhodes, who is the
in-house performance coach of
the multi-billion dollar hedge fund
Axe Capital, which is owned and operated
by the billionaire Bobby Axel
Rhodes. Axel Rhodes,
sorry. So, they're all
connected. It's rigged.
It's all rigged.
So, like, they shouldn't even
be able to proceed, then.
Like, this person, how could you possibly
handle it in good conscience?
Like, in any other, if this
was sports we'd be like that's that's a little odd isn't it i yeah brady kachuk gets to ref all
of matthew's games like what the jake muzzin gets to rap gets to rep all of uh uh matthew kachuk's
games there you go oh yeah there you go there you go how is any of that allowed how does oh my god
it's all made up you should listen i'm sorry but when a billionaire fails i i'm trying really hard
to think of a situation where you should feel bad i don't hate people because they're billionaires
but i certainly dislike billionaires with the attitude of leon cooperman
where did you get it and how do you use it you know what i mean yeah if you're rich yeah good
for you you did a thing and you got rich cool yeah where'd you get it how do you use it yep
doesn't sound like any of these guys earned it fairly and use it properly well they don't stop
other people for making money fuck you like fuck you it's just regular people jesse he's trying to
trade stocks stop stopping them adam that is a face that is can you do that again that's a look
at that i want that on a t-shirt imagine that imagine you wake up next to this every morning
oh my god wonder i'm single i can't wait for covid i'm gonna be over every day
well anyway listen crazy story be interesting to see how it ends and i bet you the ftc gets
involved and uh it i hope it ends well but who the hell knows really just not sure about things
anymore i'm not sure i trust things the way i used to so uh let's we'll wrap it up there we're not
going to do a press conference it's we're already uh way over time but we love you we will be back
on monday and the leafs are playing the oilers tonight and we'll see what actually happens
