Starting point is 00:02:31 use the promo code dangle and check out let's start the show The Steve Dangle Podcast with your hosts Steve Dangle Adam Wilde and Jesse Blake Alright, alright A lot of goals scored in the game on Saturday night but let's talk about the most important goals scored
Starting point is 00:02:57 this weekend. Ladies and gentlemen Steve Dangle got his I'm so good at hockey. In men's league. Yeah. Oh, it's just Canadian Beer League, buddy. I got GOAT Green Team MVP. Hey, there you go.
Starting point is 00:03:18 Satanic looking player of the game trophy. That's pretty cool. Yeah, it's very true detective, that thing. It's very cool. It predates my time with Team Green, but I'm happy to join in. and they got me the puck after I scored the seventh goal and a 7-3 win. So how did it go in?
Starting point is 00:03:35 The seventh, and you know what? I think that really put the stamp on the game. Like, no, we're going to win. And then it was over. And then it was over. Then everybody well and truly knew. No McDavid comebacks, nothing. So, okay, how did it go in?
Starting point is 00:03:47 Tell us the whole story. Give us the breakdown of the play. I wish we had NHL Edge. I know. We can show it. Here's Steve. He's out of position. but as the play continues he's still out of position you know there he's out of position
Starting point is 00:04:00 are your games on live barn like julie no no i know and i badly wish they were man do you know that was the first thing i asked like day one do you know how much money we could make off those streams oh my god yeah no i badly wish they were on live well actually maybe i don't i would literally broadcast them i would sidecast your live barn stream and like i don't feel like i had a particularly good game i fell down a lot like i just i don't know yeah it's just the way it worked out um sprained my wrist taking a face off like who sprains their wrist taking a face off so what happened um so i think i think i had a chance and then the puck went back to the point and our guys did a really good job of keeping it in they found a way to get it to me uh a little
Starting point is 00:04:42 lower kind of uh to the right mid mid slot and uh it's it's a learn to play league right or like beginners league so i heard a voice from behind me go you got time and i can that's not learn to play that's just hockey communication no i confirmed this morning that was the ref oh oh no way careful but it actually kind of screwed me up because i was thinking maybe i'll pass it but he goes you got time and less than half a second later someone stick checked me while i was mid shot so i did not have time at all i take my shot it's a muffin like i can tell as it leaves my stick it's a complete muffin because the defender i don't know if they got a piece of the puck but they definitely got a piece of my stick and it was just garbage
Starting point is 00:05:33 so i had already turned back around to scamper back on d and i just hear and i go what and i look back and the goalie is sitting on his bum and he takes his stick and he throws it behind him against the end boards because he was really pissed he's like there's no way a steve dangle shot should get past no way am i the guy that let in a steve dangle goal yeah that's that's the worst thing that could ever happen to me well and so that's this was the second time we played that team the first time i we we played that team uh he introduced me to his dad the the goal he did And he's like, hey, can we have a picture before the game? Because he's a listener.
Starting point is 00:06:12 That's good. Right? But I don't think he was particularly happy. No. I don't think he'll always be the guy. You haven't seen the goal and you never will. I haven't seen the goal and I never will. Supposedly, it went a little over his pad.
Starting point is 00:06:25 Okay. Like, it got, again, I don't know if, I know the guy got my stick. I don't know if he got the puck. So that might have screwed him up. And he thought the shot was coming harder. It was supposed to. and because it was like a change-up it like it messed him up and uh it beat him over his pad and under i guess it would have been his glove yeah you already dickied him you fooled him with
Starting point is 00:06:48 the knuckleball completely knuckleballed him and uh my teammates maybe it's good that it didn't come harder you know hey you know how close were you to the net just for a visual standpoint um talking like middle of the slot you're not at the you're not quinn hughes from the blue line No, like a little, I would say a little below the face-off dot. Okay. Okay, oh, it's fairly close. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Maybe, yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:13 Yeah, a little below the face-off dot. Yeah, you're in front of the net. You get a good shot. Beats the knuckleballer. Yeah, that's called being in position, right? Yeah, oh, yeah, yeah. Goal scorer's goal. And I called my shot.
Starting point is 00:07:23 You called your shot? I called my shot. This is our eighth game. It's my seventh because I missed one. And I just put in the group chat, I'm like, guys, I'm barring today. Don't you worry. Did you say that every game? nope this was the first game i said i was waiting for him to say yes game i said it first multi-point
Starting point is 00:07:41 game i got an assist like buddy i'm so good important question sorry it was my second multi-point game i got two assists did leo take you for a happy meal afterwards he uh should have he's grounded okay or blizzard maybe no he so i he was still awake when i got home and i showed him the puck because i scored my first goal and i showed him the trophy he thinks trophies are so cool and he goes oh like that he goes why'd they give you the puck i go because it's i i go because i scored my first goal he goes why was that your first goal he's still four i go because i haven't scored before he just didn't know how to react to that what do you think he thinks i'm better yeah than that but that's all right listen probably just thinks like people score all the
Starting point is 00:08:30 time yeah well not everyone can be leo i wonder if he was thinking like man i'm not gonna have to be his age before i score am i no no he'll score that yeah no well he did come see one of my games we lost nine to oh that's not good nashville game no i i wanted him to come to this one but uh uh i left i left i left for the game in the middle of a father's day event we were hosting well why why were you hosting in father's day event if you had a game uh i didn't realize the two things conflicted uh that is not surprising yeah yeah dates aren't your thing like no that they're not they're not but it's okay my father-in-law was still there so there was one there were two fathers represented because my brother-in-law was there as well jesse i had
Starting point is 00:09:20 cake after my favorite thing about steve is when you'll text hey here's our schedule for next week and then steve at the end you'll text that on a friday and it'll be the last text and then sunday rolls around and steve will go hey guys what's the schedule for next yeah and it's bad literally the text of yeah that happens all the time you know what i thought i thought gold scorers just had things done for them oh yes of course you gotta like reply to your own last message so the schedule forwards again that happens man which is an upgrade from jesse going back screenshotting it and then putting it yeah oh that's so good okay it's deserved it's deserved
Starting point is 00:09:59 yeah listen there's lots to talk about today uh i the cj show isn't up yet but i checked in with producer nick about what they talked about so i want to i want to touch on some leaf stuff there um and there's obviously some stuff from around the league that we're going to talk about the first thing i do want to mention though uh before we even get to the stanley cup final okay because remember it is always about the leafs we're starting to keep talking we're starting Leafs a little bit here and then we'll and then we'll leave them and we'll come back thought we were all hockeyed out after I want yeah yeah maybe yeah we should talk about we should talk about something else we should talk about another CFL kicked off this weekend how close to Shorzy
Starting point is 00:10:29 is your locker room far how pretty far huh far um there's a little bit less swearing yeah and uh no game stick no popsicles no no drum or sorry drumsticks sorry how dare you I would like popsicles yeah yeah can i get to what we're going to talk about no are you guys going to just keep yammering i like i like steve's are you gonna be one of these are you gonna be one of these guys though that that posts like their beer leads to that absolutely not okay good well like was he posting one one goal no i know god like there are guys that like will post they're like their lead standings very generous all the league can we go online and look at the league standings you guys must keep track of that yeah i think so yeah i have an app because i'm part of the league
Starting point is 00:11:14 but yeah probably maybe we should start doing that maybe we should start doing that where's the LFR oh no that's after we win the championship you should do it first well I don't remember
Starting point is 00:11:30 it like I didn't see it I'm doing my best you should interview guys at the game and just get their take on it but try to piece it together like a crime scene you know we gotta start sending people I gotta get credentialed for this Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:43 How hard is it to get credentials for your league? It must be, like, a terrible process. Okay, so what you got to do is you got to go to Ajax. Well, there's your first problem. You go to Ajax Community Center, and I think you walk in. See, yeah, that's very difficult. We play on big ice, too. It's not...
Starting point is 00:12:02 Olympic or in between? It's either in between or Olympic. It's big and tiring. It sucks for defense a lot. so the leafs yeah so uh there was a a couple of tweets that after after our show on friday went viral and there's nothing particularly wrong with them but i do think they present a misleading story so i kind of want to correct a couple things our show went viral not our show oh yeah no i said there were a couple of tweets that went viral and people
Starting point is 00:12:33 reacted negatively to them not got it doesn't have anything to do with us why not i know i know frankly everything so the first thing is andy strickland's tweet and andy is a uh nhl network host uh about how marner's not coming back to toronto he confirmed that is that wait wait sorry just for the record is that andy strickland who had zach bogosian on his podcast and and he defended mitch marner for no good reason i have no idea oh i have no i don't wait no sorry just just for clarification is that andy strickland who had adam oats on his podcast and he defended mitch Marner for no reason Adam I think Adam Oates works with Mitch Marner okay and this is Andy Strickland who covers the St. Louis Blues yeah no no Andy well so just also not NHL network uh
Starting point is 00:13:14 FanDuel Sports Network oh he's FanDuel Sports Network I think that's what it's called yeah the fan whatever the FanDuel Network is that's what it is I have no issue with what Andy's saying here because um I don't know how you can confirm that Mitch Marner isn't going oh I is 100% not coming back I have a theory but at 90 but here's here's my theory on it which is after at during game seven the entire third period whenever he touched the puck he got booed uh i think that's the confirmation that he's not coming back now beyond that elliot friedman said yesterday there could be some sort of um what he heard i guess at the cup finals there could be some sort of meeting situation much like what tavaris did where the teams come to you i heard and present yeah
Starting point is 00:13:57 yeah and and that he may not even sign july 1st now the other thing that's been floating around out there about this this potentially not being a seven-year deal if he signs elsewhere uh being a shorter term deal we've been saying on this show for months that's what he should do he's 28 now if he signs their three or four years then you get another big contract like yeah you should absolutely not sign a long-term deal are you out of your mind and no no star should honestly i counterpoint to mitch marner doing this uh you're not that guy and i could see a situation where he go somewhere plays four years and it's a continuation of what he's done in toronto and nobody's willing to give him that deal ever again that it could be true now i just want to
Starting point is 00:14:43 we can come back to that's a different conversation let me come back to that but i just want to say this everybody that took andy strickland's tweet as anything other than basically what's been out there like it's that's not to me new and perhaps it is to other people but i just i looked at that And I was like, well, well, yeah, of course, like, I don't think the Leafs are. And then and then Elliott on 32 Thoughts mentioned that, you know, that the Toronto is going to get a meeting with, you know, should they want one along with all the other teams? What a waste. Well, Elliott was like, well, what could the Leafs possibly tell him at that meeting that he doesn't already know? Here's here's the thing. OK, I just want if you listen to nothing else I say for the rest of the show, I just want you to understand something. the constant conversation about Toronto trying to engage Mitch and Mitch saying no dates back to
Starting point is 00:15:34 September they said at the beginning of camp to Brad and to Brendan guys we are not negotiating in season we are not negotiating postseason we are going to July 1st now Brad and Brendan did their job which is they called and said have you changed your mind on that but the Marner camp has not change their mind so when people are listen you want to be mad at mitch or you want to villainize the way that this is handled you go ahead and do that but i think we're attacking the wrong things too early my point is this is this is what they have said we've said i know we've said this yeah but i need to say i i need i need to scream it into the ether he is not negotiating until july 1st end of story everything almost everything who knows maybe there's a couple
Starting point is 00:16:18 true tidbits out there but the vast majority of the Marner stuff you hear right now is bullshit it's crap it's complete bullshit and again I don't think Andy's wrong I don't think Toronto I don't think I don't think Marner's coming back I just would not be so bold as to confirm that and I don't and and maybe Andy's got he's probably got better sources than I do but my point is guys over and over and over again this is this is the way this is gonna go he is not gonna talk to anybody until July 1st although I'm sure there's back channeling going on there always is and uh And then I look at I look at sort of the reactions to this and go, well, you know, people are going, well, he's entitled or he's this or he's that. Listen, man, this is the biggest free agent to hit the market in half a decade.
Starting point is 00:17:00 And, you know, when John Tavares hit the market, he did exactly what Mitch Marner's people might just do, which is hold a bunch of meetings, might just do. Nobody's confirming that. And John did that and said, give me your best offers. and in fact you know who was also there brand new general manager of the Islanders Lou Lamorello who had just crossed the island gone from the Leafs to the Islanders to try to keep Tavares and I think I think we gotta like I get Toronto fans are upset about this guy but like frankly uh and I think Jesse's right the you know what Jesse brought up is the reason that they're upset um but he's not entitled doing this this is you're the biggest free agent on the market
Starting point is 00:17:42 this is the one you have earned this you've played hockey for 25 years of your 28 year life uh you've earned the right to do this i don't begrudge him that now how it's handled beyond that is going to be interesting and what i found interesting about these negotiations or the lack thereof is that they haven't played out in the press the same way there were questions about his contract but last time the amount of just shit that was out there oh i prefer this round to last one 100 right so i guess that's just my point is like like cool your jets this guy's not a bad person he's he's gonna do what every major free agent does and uh and and then you know if he signs in florida well you got every right to be mad about or he signs in carolina where he
Starting point is 00:18:25 blocked a trade sorry i'm still gonna say you're wrong about that because he blocked a trade there because his wife was about to give birth like enough it like let's get mad at the right things the optics are terrible but if that is how it works out it's like okay i don't want to go to carolina right now yes i might in a few months but my wife is about to get in a few months when we got our feet under us and you're offering us 14 million dollars and like you don't even you don't even got to move there right away yeah you got two months right also you're a millionaire and you don't got to do anything yourself pretty much yeah 100 so uh like other than you know take care of your family uh boy it is june 16th oh this is where it's this is gonna ramp up this
Starting point is 00:19:10 gonna be every day from now on like how much i can't talk about nothing every day guys like i holy shit until there's a legitimate update from someone legitimate uh the the zoom in person or in-person meetings thing is a new update that's an update that is that is a legitimate update from a legitimate person Elliot Friedman said that he's that's what he's considering taking uh zooms I can read the quote it says it sounds like the possibility exists that this may not be a July 1st thing Marner's choice could be to set up zooms and or if teams want in-person meetings on July 1st or right after and then maybe he goes and visits one of those two places so we got from Friedman that this thing might extend past July 1st it might not be a noon thing uh an executive
Starting point is 00:19:56 reached out to me yesterday and said they had also heard about the July 1st meetings which is just logical um on account so Tavares people forget I don't remember if you already mentioned this Adam I'm sorry no um the Tavares sweepstakes took place during a unique pocket of time in the NHL where they had that week where you had a week to negotiate with other teams so you're you essentially became a free agent early but not really but kind of Mitch doesn't have that luxury they can tamper all they want but you know yeah they're not gonna they prefer tampering to the the free agent week which is weird i it's very strange i don't know which which side do you guys fall on did you like having a negotiation window week between the draft and free agency or do you
Starting point is 00:20:37 like this where it's july 1st and people actually sign i actually as a content creator i don't like that uh because this will stretch it out yeah well no i want i want it all to happen on the same day so when we're doing when we get the whole team together and we do our july 1st that uh that the the contracts are signed and they're new so but what i worry about is marner is going to hold up everything uh yeah i think there's enough cap space this year that that's probably not going to happen because you think about it like the way they talked about ehlers today on 32 thoughts was like um uh there's gonna be a lot of teams who are like okay we have no shot at mitch let's just go right for nick that makes sense right so there's gonna be a lot of guys like i i don't know if
Starting point is 00:21:17 you're nick ehlers and you get the contract offer you want why wouldn't you just take it like and if you're a team and you're like i'm sorry nick ehlers sorry almost a point of game player most seasons of his career we simply can't offer you a deal until we know what's going on with marner i mean buddy uh i got news for you he ain't waiting i think some teams are going to be a little stuck because let them be stuck use it as an opportunity the leafs better not be one of them no no they won't they're not even they're not going to the meeting i don't think they're i don't think they're having that conversation that's the other thing is like what's interesting here is we get a lot of what what is supposedly the marner perspective what we're not hearing a
Starting point is 00:21:53 lot of is where the leaf stand on this and i think that they've been purposely well because i think that they don't want to be the ones to say we're not going back that row but i think both sides know that this this marriage is over and and that's okay and i think a lot of people are used to the still used to the kyle dubas era of things where he would just talk and he would say things and you would kind of know how kyle dubas feels about everything and bradger living isn't kyle dubas he's not showing his hand to everybody and saying exactly what he feels at all moments like the leafs i think through this whole thing understand that mitch marner's not coming back and they don't want to negotiate with him and they're done and they've moved on but he's not
Starting point is 00:22:32 going to come out and say that when i think like people expect him to do that because kyle would be the type to do that yeah there's just no reason to do it yep right now now um the the one thing that i will say that that chris chris uh offered some pretty good stuff on the cj show and we'll just kind of touch on it he goes into a little bit more detail talking about what the tavaris deal is going to look like and he sort of modeled it on the yanni gourd chris tanev stuff which is six years each six years lower and i think pierre lebrun tweeted it out on friday and then cj talked about it today um the idea that it would be like less than five million is just off the table but if you get him at five to five and a half like it's 30 million over six years
Starting point is 00:23:20 and creeping up yeah he's creeping up like every every time we come with a new episode i hear a new number that's creeping a little higher well i actually and it's getting back to the core four uh i'm wondering why i don't think i don't think it'll get up that high but like if you give him because he by the way he won his it's looking like he's gonna win a cra tax case nice and which is which means he can take a discount attaboy john i know that uh by the way the montreal canadian And it was definitely a Montreal Canadian fan that reported him. I'm sure it was. Like somebody at the CRA who's a Canadiens fan said, you know what?
Starting point is 00:23:48 100%. Adam reports that. I do not report that. But I do think you can look at Tavares and go, listen, if your number's $28 to $30 million total, we're going to pay him all of that in the first two seasons. There is a story. I'll be vague.
Starting point is 00:24:09 There's a story of an NHL executive who kept getting audited by the irs and couldn't figure out why and they checked his account and it was a fan of a rival team i'm not surprised at the irs who's like ah fuck this guy wow that's funny that is great do you know how much legal work you'd have to do to even get that check done like you'd have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars that's anyway i don't think they've been audited since no no uh hilarious lawsuit waiting to happen yeah yeah i don't know if they never pay taxes again how's that i don't know if they went there that is a true story though uh anyway it's it's going to be really interesting to see kind of what the jt deal looks like when it inevitably gets done i
Starting point is 00:24:52 think i think we got to be careful you guys talked about well the number went up and and you know we were speculating about what the number might be i don't think we've ever really known and when you the guy's a point of game player like he almost had as many i did he have more goals than nick and he's a oh my god he had almost 40 so okay this is a guy that almost 40 goals and listen i want him to sign at four million dollars a year too but if he gets five or five and a half and he scores 35 i are we upset about i could care how many years i could care less about any of the stats it's always been about the mix of human beings mitch marner is a hundred point player put that on the table looks good it's not about what he does it's about the mix and i think
Starting point is 00:25:42 if you get too high with the numbers but anyway if the the forest numbers keeps creeping up and it's like seven mil or something like that then i'm like the mix is still the mix yeah here's here's what's starting to drive me nuts uh uh talking about the leafs is becoming very difficult or at least talking about what they're going to look like in the future because you can't even make a move that actually kind of makes good sense unless you can picture this person being a playoff success. Yeah. I'll give you a perfect example because I know you hate this suggestion.
Starting point is 00:26:16 Marco Rossi. Marco Rossi. 5'9", 11 minutes a night in the playoffs. 23 years old. For a team that had injuries. 23 years old. 5'9", yes, 182 pounds. He's had back-to-back 82-game, 20-plus goal seasons.
Starting point is 00:26:33 He had 40 points two seasons ago. He had 60 points this past season. Even with 11 minutes a night, he had three points, two goals in those six games for the Minnesota Wild. And the Leafs need players in that age range. They need centers. If that guy is available, which is so rare that a center who can put up 60 points who's that age becomes available if that guy's available surely you take
Starting point is 00:27:03 a look at it well i'm sure you take a look i guess you take a look for god's sake let calgary overpay for him bill garen's gonna flee somebody on that guy you're gonna flee some well this is the this is the thing if he costs too much then obviously you don't do it he's a 23 year old center at 20 goals man i i think he's gonna cost a lot the leafs don't have any first round picks to pitch out the door for him so and they're not about to trade like an easton cowan for him that would be insane but if there are a way to get them i'm like well obviously you try and the conversation dies immediately because it's like class well yeah you play you go play florida with marco rossi as your second or third line they'll kill him though they will they will he will be
Starting point is 00:27:42 he will be pasted to the side of the board he will be a board hat he's right at marco rossi used to skate here he's he's he's right around sam bennett's elbow height and uh like it's over it's over but i like i i don't know that's okay so it's just big guys then it's just i think it's i think for the leafs it is i bet the leafs i think you have to be big now speaking of exclusively like if there's a 23 year old down 60 points you sounded like kyle dubas no yeah no let's get a bunch of small guys everybody and i'm shit at my job give me a promotion i said if he's available let's do it no i don't think you do that i think speaking of the mix okay um if the leafs changed up the mix and brought in a dj how would you feel about that because there is word from the
Starting point is 00:28:31 athletics arthur staple that uh z bad uh zabina jad i thought you meant dj smith no uh the zabina jad and the leafs could be a marriage so and i like now people are like there there's a little bit of thing with Zabinijad because he's a great player but then there's always like people like well he's a little too nonchalant and it's like is he nonchalant or is he Swedish I mean he seems identical to Willie which makes him perfect like this yeah yeah yes um and does perform in the playoffs does perform in the playoffs I need to do a deep dive on like how he is early series late series but over the course of the rangers doing well in recent memory he's their leading scorer yeah now i think last show you were like isn't that just marner so i gotta do a bit of a deeper
Starting point is 00:29:28 dive there uh-huh because again you look at marner's points you're like oh why are they getting rid of this guy and then you watch the individual games in individual series you're like oh that's why yeah yep like anyone who just looks at oh broad strokes okay well you're lazy and not worth our time right and i'm just i'm i'm curious about that more than anything because you get if you get to varus at five and you get zavinijad and i know his contracts long and people are worried about that and you shouldn't be because you can always trade contracts later uh zavinijad i think it's five years left at eight and a half holy santa claus shit no way year four of eight 8.5 million dollars heading into year four yeah
Starting point is 00:30:10 Yeah, because Puckpedia has moved over to the next season. I believe so, yeah. So, yeah. Wow, four years left at eight and a half? It ends 2030. Right. So, I'm looking at this and I'm going, okay. Yeah, it's not great, but are we worried about 2030 Chris Tanev?
Starting point is 00:30:25 Because he signed at 2030. Right. Okay. Not worried about it. With Tavares. Let's do Tavares first. No, no. I'm bringing this back to Tavares.
Starting point is 00:30:33 Oh, okay. So, there's a reason here. Got it. You get Tavares at five, five and a half. Zibanejad is what? 8.5? 8.5. So 5.5 plus 8.5 equals what? 13. 14?
Starting point is 00:30:47 14 million. That's what Mitch is going to make. Zibanejad Tavares had nearly 40 goals. Zibanejad had 20 last year. Yeah, but the Rangers are so good. Let's be honest. Yes, that is valid. He's also only two years younger than Tavares.
Starting point is 00:31:03 So they're very similar in age. They have a window, right? My point is this is also got the little anchor next to his name it's full no move can't be moved sent down or wave what they're saying is yeah he's also missed two games
Starting point is 00:31:17 post COVID bubble he played the full 56 81 82 81 82 it's just all things to note so here's what Arthur Staple said there's a chance the jury has already worked out with Sabina Jad who has five years at 8.5 million average
Starting point is 00:31:34 annual value that moving on would be best. They still need to find a fit. The Leafs might have some interest and some space to fill, but trading Kreider's BFF soon after dealing Kreider would produce the impact cap flexibility in team culture that Drury so badly wants. Sabinijad holds the cards, though, and he gave no indication
Starting point is 00:31:55 he was interested in leaving at the end of the season. Now, the Kreider deal did happen to a team that he didn't want to go to. It was on his no-trade team, you know, and they worked it out without fireworks, right? And I tend to think that Arthur Staple suggesting that means that he's heard something to that effect that he can't report. That's what I'm deducing from that.
Starting point is 00:32:15 Interesting. That that conversation has probably taken place and it's just impossible to confirm that it's taken place. And so if a Zabinijad, and we're playing with the Puckpedia line management thing here. If you have Matthews, Zabinijad, Tavares down the center, well i think you got a pretty good i think you feel pretty good about your set because here's the problem with the leafs always it wasn't just the mix of guys it was the positions they played
Starting point is 00:32:42 that's why they tried nylander at center well again and again and again in training camp i know this is like incredibly difficult to replicate but i'm just looking at the panthers right now and they're insane depth and i'm like why did i ever think they had a shot their third line is lindell lusterine and marsh and but those guys established themselves like this during this run and it's not that they weren't great in previous runs and that sort of thing but you establish yourself as that great during the playoffs right so i'm i'm looking at them and i'm going on how many teams would that be their second line on how many teams would that be their first like and that's their third it is their third option behind bennett kachuk verhage
Starting point is 00:33:31 and the top line that's not even playing all that well is reinhardt barkov rodriguez yeah holy shit yeah so i'm sorry the reason i say all that is up the middle bing bang boom awesome holy santa claus shit you look at the top line nice knee lander oh my god beyond that like there's just nothing there i like i zabana jet is a big swing like i'm saying all that to say zabana jet is a huge swing does he not feel like what a pierre-luc dubois swing felt like last summer a little older i understand more success to his name than pierre-luc dubois ever at i understand what you mean but here's what the capitals have to surround here's why the capitals can afford to take on an eight million dollar project is all of their young talent on
Starting point is 00:34:27 their first or second contract the leafs just don't have that nice end of list they just don't have it and you're going to try for cowan and danford's going to be a few years away yeah like you have at best case unless you make some sort of moves you have nize who's gonna make a lot of money probably and cowan like they got protis and next year they're gonna have two pro other a pro tie pro tie and they're gonna have mcmichael and they got like oh my god yeah they just yeah the leafs just don't have that well that's why i'm worried about spending big money even if it's less on yet another guy so what goes let's say Mika Zbigniewicz agrees to a trade to the Toronto Maple Leafs he's cool with it the Leafs want him what goes the other way I think cap space is going
Starting point is 00:35:15 the Rangers way yeah but what what do the Leafs give them they have to I think the Leafs have to dump money they there's no reality where the Rangers retain so do you do a do you do a yarn or a conf or something like that to even out some money a little bit one or both of them and basically every pick you have left for this draft like you don't have any first if you're the ranger i don't know why a first would need to go to the rangers though they want the cat flexibility they want to be able to listen you got worried about this summer they're not worried yeah which is nuts okay that is nuts yeah but it was like i'm trading i'm trading my you know i you got a i got a chocolate bar coming one way in the lunchroom i'm gonna i guess i'll give you some goldfish
Starting point is 00:35:57 crackers like but i also don't think the rangers are giving up zabinijad for free like i think they gotta get something back well i think they'll get players i think they'll get roster players but really what they're after what they're after is they're after flexibility they're after money to spend that's what they want you can give them that you have money to spend so why i mean i don't i'm not worried about is it a fifth round is it a pick swap for fifth round picks i don't know he's worth so much more yeah like this isn't a crider but i don't think that that's how the rangers view it i think the rangers want flexibility i think they want to do some other no but i feel i'm saying like they if somebody's willing to pay something for him
Starting point is 00:36:36 right so if the leafs are like we'll take him for money and they're like okay so but we got um san jose or exit seattle who's going to give us a player plus a first round pick for him and they're willing to do that i think somebody one of these 31 other teams will do that sure but mika then can step in and go well here's where i want to go right so let's say it's seattle and toronto and seattle's willing to pay something like and toronto's not yep so i feel like there's a there's a deal out there so toronto's gonna have to pay something so and i don't know what that i wouldn't know either here's no idea here's what the leafs got in terms of pick capital this year just so that we're not like theorizing um no first they have a second they have a third they
Starting point is 00:37:14 don't have a fourth they have two fifths a sixth and seventh 2026 is even worse they don't have a first they don't have a second they have a third they don't have a fourth they have a fifth a sixth and no seventh um they have the reason leaf trades are kind of frustrating to discuss is what chips do they have they don't have a ton right they don't have a ton in the way of picks they don't have a ton in the way of prospects if you trade off your roster i mean there's guys you would love to dump but what are your what are teams going to give you something good for the guys you're trying to dump you know what i mean oh yeah here's a second for david conf like it's just no you're not gonna get that yeah right or yarn croak or whatever whatever i do think when the music stops
Starting point is 00:37:58 there's gonna be some interest in a guy like conf because there are a lot of teams looking for centers and he is a depth center and he only makes i don't think that's wrong um uh i uh so because minton's gone and um by the way it's gone the minton thing people got to relax on that yeah but he was a chip yeah i suppose it's not about making the hall of fame we don't know what he's what he's going to be me neither he's he's a chip though you have cowan left it makes no sense to trade him no i think you want him in the lineup you have danford it makes no sense to trade him um like you know we we had like a list of three when we were talking about with leaf prospects like so who's in that group now of prospects that teams would look at like hildeby are you now
Starting point is 00:38:42 looking in net i would do that i don't act him off act him off who had such a good start to the season and really fell off kind of um boy it's bear it's bear which is why i think they're going to be doing some signing and some trading but some like some cap dump trading now cj has also mentioned the possibility of the leaps being very interested in brad marsh and we talk about Responsible money spent, right? So is Zibinijad responsible money spent? I think he's a risk, and I think you try, because up until last season, the guy's a stud.
Starting point is 00:39:20 Yeah. For reference, this is what the Leafs lineup looks like with Zibinijad in it and no Callie Yarncroke. So it's Nyes, Matthews, Marner, McMahon, Tavares. No, Nylander. Oh, muscle memory. What did I say? You said Marner.
Starting point is 00:39:35 Oh, my God. Muscle memory, Jesse. Literally, my brain is just Nize Matthews Marner for the rest of my life. And I'm going to have to get used to something else. Oh, my God. That was funny. Nize Matthews Nylander, McMahon Tavares, no two right wing, Lawton Zabinijad Domi, Robertson signed, let's say.
Starting point is 00:39:59 Oh, Jesus. He got the new contract. Conf and Reeves. See, I think you have Zabinijad on second 2C. You got Nylander with him. And I think you put it in this lineup scenario. Oh, you move Domi up? You move Domi up.
Starting point is 00:40:13 Because Domi, I think, and Matthews had something together. Now, if you get Marchand. That looks a bit better. Then I think you have, do you run? Do you have the room? This is $5.6 million left. And this is a lineup with Reeves and Robertson. There's 5.6 left.
Starting point is 00:40:31 We already moved off of Yarn Croak. Croak, which isn't enough. And Marchand doesn't want $5 million. They got the money. They don't have it. How? Vegas, you guys asked the same question with Vegas. How?
Starting point is 00:40:40 So who's moving off the lineup to bring in Marchand at $8 million? I don't know. Sabanajad. The one who's not even a Leaf. But they can't spend, you can't spend $8 million on wing. You can't until you've done it. You've got to get another one. We're learning nothing.
Starting point is 00:40:54 So Marchand's not coming. No. I think he is. Well, not with Seabad. I think he's coming. I think they're both coming. The Leafs do need a DNA change, and yes, he would help that. They do not have the money for this.
Starting point is 00:41:06 they don't i think you guys are i think you are a victim of uh a kyle dubas era team i get it but you're not being nearly creative enough you're not you're not asking you adam with the lineup in front of you and our ability to move around any of this money so how much is mad you're not making this scenario by the way seven million dollars okay i think that's a that's a fair deal that's valid yeah um okay and tavaris you have at what 5.5 okay and i think that's valid and fair can you i don't i don't like a six why do you have david comp five and a half because i traded yarn croak for zabinijad uh-huh so jesse blake because that's that's what that's the suggestion i got from the panel actually i said i think comp would be going but oh my god
Starting point is 00:41:52 but i think you have i think you have a team without comp without reeves reeves you're burying yes um okay uh lawton is your fourth your fourth so we're creating more holes in the Cowan is your third line right wing. Oh, yeah. All right. There you go. Let's go get Cowan. It feels too early in June for this.
Starting point is 00:42:11 No. No? No. Okay, no. We have held off for months. We've been really good. In previous years, we've been all over this crap all year long. No, we've been holding out.
Starting point is 00:42:21 We're going to do the Game 5 Marchand Fest. This is why I'm going to Marchand, so we can go to the game. Right. Marchand. You're so good. This is the point. You're so good. See, I said the mix and then Z-Bad.
Starting point is 00:42:32 You see? You want Easton Cow in there? Yeah, throw Easton Cow in there. On the right wing? Revo, I think you're going to find someone else other than that. You're going to find, you need to find... Holmberg. I'm going to send out.
Starting point is 00:42:43 Holmberg. And then... We're serious. Or not Holmberg. Maybe you find the next Seymour Benoit, but up front. Can you not find... Holmberg. Are we allergic to finding players that maybe are undervalued in other situations?
Starting point is 00:42:59 Like, Brad has done that. Benoit is probably one of the best signings Brad Treliving's ever had. It's going to be great when the Leafs sign Daniel Sprung. Oh, no, they're not going to do that. And they trade him by one of the Thanksgivings. Either Canadian or American. Art Steve, day one. Leafs.
Starting point is 00:43:18 At home. Montreal Canadian. Nyes Matthews Domi. McMahon Zabinijad Nylander. Lawton Tavares Cowan. Robertson blank blank. Are you happy? I think Robertson's gone too, by the way.
Starting point is 00:43:37 No. No? You need more? I know Marner's gone. God, that team looks... Here's the thing. You were spending too much on too few. You're still doing that here.
Starting point is 00:43:52 You're still doing that here. I would love it if on July 1st, It's like we signed these three or four notable players for like four million bucks each, which is not something I thought I would say a few years ago, but like the goalposts have moved a little. This team has not had enough depth. And because we like these guys and because they've won,
Starting point is 00:44:21 we've tricked ourselves into thinking they had it. and and you look like a deep team until a deep team shows up and that's what happened in the second round yeah we went holy shit and the leafs did beat the sins of course they should have they very extraordinarily should have and in the end it wasn't really close no speed wobble a little in the middle but yeah like they they won they should have great oh man the panthers they were so close can we stop we can we do this every you know they lose in seven every year right so they're close every year but your original point in that spreading out that money that you lose from marner and you have all of this extra cap space the idea is to get depth with that is
Starting point is 00:45:06 not to spend it on a couple guys because then you're running it back in the same uh sort of manner like i 100 agree like yeah that's the direction they need to go a bunch of three million dollar guys like i'll give you an idea of the type of lineup i'm looking at i i saw uh like a puckpedia armchair gm projection i apologize because i can't remember who it was but they had mcmahon as a healthy scratch on opening day which he actually was this past year but you know he was injured just on a curve he just scored 20 goals for craig berube like i don't think he's gonna be a healthy scratch but they had so many guys that mcmahon didn't make the lineup he also had a bad camp get a bad get a bad camp yes I just I just look at that lineup and I'm like ah it
Starting point is 00:45:47 it has the same problems yeah also we got to add Max Pacioretty to this lineup yeah he will I think he's gonna be yeah uh why don't he'll be on the left Robertson on the right why not give me Jimmy John Buffalo is is now listening to offers because I don't know it's so funny Buffalo seemed to not understand that like he didn't want to be there and it was pretty obvious that he didn't want to be there and they're like we're not going to trade him and you were the one saying they can't alan they're going to sorry i would rather them sit your clients than trade him oh well i'm not reporting great don't we're the sabers what are we going to do suck you're not you're not going to feel bad when gavin mckenna's on your wing shut up
Starting point is 00:46:31 no like you're a restricted free agent i think they could get a lot for him i of course they could they might even get JJ Paterka at some point you have to be able to uh enjoy the fruits of your labor which for the Sabres was being ass and then being smart enough to draft JJ Paterka oh I don't like it here no one likes it here you're not special he's going to put on the uniform he's going to Florida to win a cup I'll kill you he's going to Florida to win a cup like every other former saver absolutely not absolutely not my tour ryan howard who else i'll cancel ap sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things
Starting point is 00:47:25 One of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to rappel down and clean all the windows, but they never clean my windows. Uh-oh. And their way around on that is like, well, it's a patio window. You can do that yourself. And I'm like, well, hang on a second. What if I don't want to? I don't have the stuff because you got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing.
Starting point is 00:47:46 The chemicals. You got to have the right chemicals. See, that's what I'm saying. That's why I used TaskRabbit and I employed a tasker. Starting point is 00:49:18 have bullied us in high school oh yeah what those those goals happened um uh hilariously uh in in game five and saturday night was a crazy sort of night and his burning of jake wallman needs to be studied set him on five like you wallman's been really really good for edmonton so for marshan to do that to him he's been chippy and he's been a loud mouth for them going back at them and what do you say now what do you what i'm gonna kick your ass well no you're not just burned you and also like yeah like our fifth option killed you like or whatever he is marshand i mean he he does have an air of not being denied this year i mean how many more chances is he gonna have put it this way if he signs with the leafs this might be it well
Starting point is 00:50:20 leaving the leafs out of it but like it absolutely could be the leaf if he signs for eight million dollars for three or four years is that team a contender uh I'm gonna guess not you said the same thing about the Dallas Stars when they signed Pavelski and what did they sign him for seven million seven mil times three and he's a playoff performer yeah see this is where I think Brad Marchand is smart money in I think that's the next Pavelski deal in in waiting he's absolutely like you know how with Bennett we're like sure he's gonna get 10 million whatever shut up I believe them when they say Marchand is gonna get eight 100 and by the way that's when that's why i kind of am starting to believe the bennett stuff you think
Starting point is 00:51:05 he's signing for less i think he's gonna stay there i think he's he's going to have to sign for less to stay there but he's gonna have a longer term deal right it'll be like eight yeah um that that could make some sense but this guy earlier in the season i was like oh boy son's starting to set on him a little bit he played at the four nation he was okay He was hurt though Depth guy yeah And I don't know if he's still hurt But like this is as
Starting point is 00:51:35 Good as I've ever Seen him play and I've seen him at his best Unfortunately remember the Panthers traded for him and he was Injured yes he didn't play for the first I think It was three-ish weeks two weeks And he when the Panthers acquired him Look at this this is moment We can do the stop motion of the move
Starting point is 00:51:51 Around Wallman I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry Go back to the last frame oh heaven sorry i start he's been so good in these playoffs oh my god yeah that's disgusting i mean that's shouldn't it shouldn't be danger right i think you could forgive any anyone uh because you're like oh he's got marsh and to the outside it's gonna be surely he's not gonna get windmilled in a stanley cup final game and he windmilled that man and i do gotta say picker did not have a great game yeah yeah the chances they gave up were pretty great a
Starting point is 00:52:32 there's not anybody on the oilers i point to and say they did have a good game they got i'm happy i'm happy mcdavid scored but like i'll tell you who had that game chris knoblock okay in what way yuck oh who had a bad game yes oh yeah yeah no you didn't have a game um uh scratching Kapanen is unjustifiable yeah uh before the Marchand thing though yes yes yes yeah the the move there like that's why you have players like Marchand on your rosters because they bring a factor of not being afraid of the moment that's a play you make when you have no fear that it's game five of the Stanley Cup final and you're willing to pull off a move like that if you're a little timid if this is your first time doing this thing you're not going for it like you said
Starting point is 00:53:17 it's marshan to the outside against wallman what is he gonna do no a young player gets criticized for trying a low percentage play exactly yes but that's brad marshan you have on your team he knows this he's been through it he knows he can pull off this move and that's why you have guys like him it's such a spectacular play and the fact that this is second of the night like unbelievable that goal is why i could never do play-by-play professionally because i'm pretty sure my call for that was here comes more so that's everywhere else in the world i just realized what you were talking about that's how they call games everywhere else in the world that's how they call games is they actually put some emotion into it so i think you'd be just fine it's just
Starting point is 00:54:06 it has to be the network going yeah we'll let you be a human being the kawaii buzzer beater versus the american one yeah the the american one is just yeah canadian one's like well there's he's hitting right no it wasn't it was good it just everybody oh game series toronto has won anyway sorry i'm talking about toronto winning something yeah once ever and it's i mean it's a crazy move it's a crazy move crazy move his second goal of the game which he had a breakaway early in this game now they're playing again tomorrow night guys and this could be it they will be in florida and uh let's be honest florida's been the better team in five of five games yeah
Starting point is 00:54:48 the first period stats have been like crazy just the amount they've been outscored to start these games and edmonton has just tried to figure out like okay if we get down we can always fight back but eventually that catches up with you in a tight series like this i think the two teams are very close it's just florida is better at playing within their structure and keeping their game together tight for a longer period of time and they come out hotter and some then they get more even during the second or if it's if it's the long change then edmonton's falling behind and then things are tight again not game four not game four and then things are tight again in the third as they always are so the i think it was bar down who pointed this out here's the hope if you're
Starting point is 00:55:30 mcdavid and the oilers mcdavid in particular uh 2008 the penguins lose in six to the detroit red wings next year rematch it's tied to two getting in uh going into game five game five detroit i forgot this murdered them murdered the penguins five nothing the difference is detroit was the home team game six pittsburgh goes back to pittsburgh they win 2-1 nice good tight matchup game seven in detroit penguins win 2-1 tight tight tight tight flurry stops 49 of 51 big save at the end i looked that up myself i didn't even have to text alan which i'm sure he he has that on a wall a wall somewhere i think oh 100 he's got it like you know on like his inner bicep he flexes it at people just to let exactly exactly 100 um i guess my question is are the
Starting point is 00:56:32 oilers capable of doing that twice how many goals have there been in the series like total yeah quite a few what's the fewest they've limited florida to in a game uh four they won two two games five four uh i can just give me one second by the way that was like scores in the game are four three or oilers four three okay so three uh five four panthers six one panthers five four oilers five two uh panthers so you have to do something you've never done in this series twice last year game seven tightest game in that series panthers win two one these are the games that the panthers know how to win the best um they don't win them all game six against the leafs was very tight leafs won that two nothing what happened game seven like it's
Starting point is 00:57:30 to me it's not just about forcing seven it how do you do this twice we've seen you force them we've seen teams like florida has actually like i i want to know what their record is in closing out series because they they don't always do it on the first attempt yeah weirdly they love giving the team the other they love a long series yeah this is their thing last year against tampa took two tries this year i don't remember how that shook out against tampa oh it's five games yeah yeah but like how the series went yeah they had two two tries against the leafs i think carolina staved off the sweep um like barely yeah barely but like there is this is actually kind of a high likelihood this goes seven um i don't think florida wants to go back
Starting point is 00:58:21 now if it does steve will be texting jesse later on about this but we'll tell you that we would be doing a show if it goes seven our third show of the week will be on saturday rather than friday Yeah, we'll come after Saturday or after game seven. I'm going to have to record early. Yeah, why? You got plans? Yeah, my son's birthday. Oh, it's Leo's birthday.
Starting point is 00:58:40 You should bring him. We'll give him a mic. I actually enjoy my marriage. We'll put him on camera. That'll go over well. Yeah. Adam, how expensive are divorce lawyers? Yeah?
Starting point is 00:58:55 Okay. So let's just record early. They say you lose half of your wealth. you lose you lose half of that to lawyers oh cool all right tell you what i can be here for nine the here for nine the florida panthers thing like them not closing it out it's it's a true thing they had the opportunity they were up three oh against the uh hurricanes like they had that opportunity and they didn't do it and they went to five and you know we know how the least thing went but like last year yeah final and like it happened three times last year the ability to
Starting point is 00:59:22 close it out as a sports media company thank you so much the last year florida panthers for giving us for stanley but i i imagine right now the words from maurice are we don't want to take that flight back to edmonton new and that mentality i feel like this year they kind of got it and i don't know if there's last year too they had difficulty with right yeah yeah the bruins almost screwed everything up that was you fuckers yeah that was that paul maurice quote i so i i don't know because i feel like they have whatever it is this year and i don't know if they're going to allow themselves to go back to Edmonton. The question I have is, how do you...
Starting point is 01:00:00 There's two questions I have. First off, Knobloch's decision not to put Kapanen in was crazy, and we need to talk about that. Yeah, sorry, I cut you off when you were trying to bring it up earlier. It wasn't valid yet. We're coming to that in a second. Let's do that. The one I want to start with
Starting point is 01:00:14 is the Stan Bowman quote at trade deadline where he said they didn't need a goalie. And I'm sorry, even against the Los Angeles Kings, they were letting in four or five goals a game here's so i think yeah i know that stewart skinner and calvin pickard have had good records and they've got them there are you telling me with a straight face that there that there couldn't have been an easier road here because i think there could have so you're telling me you couldn't find a goalie who only allowed three goals a game so we all agreed pickard should play game five uh and i think we all agree skinner should play
Starting point is 01:00:51 game six and i think that's the problem um sit what is it sid tweeted out if you don't know who your starter is at this point in the finals then you never had one crosby damn crosby should start for the sydney cross no sydney public oh sid six friend of the show oh yeah yes and i think he's right i know i just want to clarify if people didn't know who it was sorry yeah listen uh you know Sid no one's ever been named that before just the one guy no Abel Sid Abel um we're gonna need some late series magic from Stuart Skinner this is what it comes down to Florida's the better team the Stanley Cup doesn't always go to the best team there's no uh you know congrats you're the best team but you lost yep right like there's no award for that if you're Edmonton you've won
Starting point is 01:01:39 two games as the second best team yep in this series that's okay you're right in it how do you find a way to win two straight highest stakes possible biggest stage possible as the second best team connor has to be complete magic dry sidle has to be complete magic which they should anyway this is the time to be mad yeah fine great you know connor he had a bad game through 40 yeah even though like he had two grade a scoring chances to start the game no actual shots on goal then he gets one then he gets a goal right and it's a connor goal holy shit it's so crazy those two have to be magic skinner has to be magic and he can he can we need two games and you and you never be magic again okay never your cam ward for the rest of your career you you peak at however
Starting point is 01:02:34 and you'll get paid like that forever yeah for the for the next 15 years they'll be like but what it'll be 2040 and they'll be like but what if we get 2025 Stuart Skinner right can you give us two games of magic because that is very literally the only chance the Oilers have there's just no scenario that's tough where you get mediocre goaltending in game six and seven and win yeah there's florida won't allow that or you get other worldly performances from edmonton's depth who have who were completely neutralized last game kapanen has to be in your game six lineup this yeah arvidsson arvidsson just didn't give them the pop they needed he don't understand the point i think i'd be advocating so hard for you got to take arvidsson out for kapanen but i
Starting point is 01:03:29 I think we might see this might be the downside to Arvidsson's career, as great as it's been. I'm not saying he's not useful, but I look at where he's at and the injuries he's had, and I love Victor Arvidsson, but I feel like Kapanen's the guy right now. I also don't have a read on what Knobloch's leash is at all. He scratched, he benched, sorry, Troy Stetcher for an hour. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:03:55 and then went back to him the next game, which was so confusing. Yeah, so why wasn't he playable that game? Why would you choose to put your team at a disadvantage and have five defensemen for two and a half periods because the game went to OT? Now, here's the thing, though. They won, so it's like, oh, well, maybe you should have.
Starting point is 01:04:14 Yeah, but they won with a self-inflicted injury. Like, I don't know. What is the mentality? I have a point, though. I have a point, though. pod colson was actually the guy in game five who got stapled that man had two points in game four he scored the game tying goal and he assisted on the overtime winner you played him 10 minutes and 11 seconds in game five because he did take a bad penalty he did
Starting point is 01:04:46 he had seven hits in those 10 minutes he had two points the game before put that young man on the nice what are you doing the decisions are questionable yeah arvidsson was a minus one jeff skinner i liked in game four he wasn't really a factor in game five nobody nobody in the depth had a good game five no and like i'm i'm like even a little disappointed and like i'd like more to yanmark i'd like more out of henry could like i the last couple games has just made me shake my head and sigh at the idea of if only Zach Hyman was in this series how different might it look he ain't here yeah he ain't here he's not gonna be here I even for a brief moment today was like it's an elimination game for the Oilers does he no he won't he can't he cannot he cannot well I
Starting point is 01:05:45 mean Bergeron played with a punctured lung I can see why you had but they already confirmed he's out for like three months they already did yeah yes they already know you might not even play the beginning of the season like no one is coming through that door right this is what i'm trying to say yes very literally maybe you maybe like now that you have that goal you got that gritty goal yeah maybe turning your back on your first goal like you don't even care maybe make david heard about your goal do you do you need a an mvp huh um they need like again it's it's it's narrative slop but i don't care yeah magic tomorrow night a big part of sports tomorrow night you are the head coach of the edmonton oilers who are you starting and while you think
Starting point is 01:06:28 about that let me read the quote from stan bowman because i pulled it up from the athletic it's even worse than i remember uh he said i know that for whatever reason he seems to get some criticism he's talking about stewart skinner for whatever reason you condescending oh my god i guess goalies in general tend to i've never really understood why it's just the randomness of fans or the media i just look at it how is he performing from november on he's been very consistent he's been a very consistent a very good goalie goalies always have a goal here and there you don't like well we're going to look at every option for improving but i would say no that's not a big issue with our team yeah i mean they can keep saying it and it can keep not being true i mean
Starting point is 01:07:15 i i don't i and and and you know kyle dubas and i'll say it again and again and again told us cody cc's numbers were actually good and where we don't need to have a referendum on him didn't he head into a season with matt murray and elia samson yeah and peter morazic at one point too got promoted i'm gonna keep saying that until it's not true listen it's it's there are organizational beliefs that sometimes you just have to believe whether it's true or not because you're not in the stage of thinking rationally and clearly you are in the stage of we're two wins from the stanley cup these are the goalies we have there's nothing we can do about it so i gotta pump my guys tire this was at the trade deadline oh like this is then you're a freaking moron this is
Starting point is 01:07:58 so here's what he said about not making a move to get a goalie here's the only justification for that decision Skinner pulls it off that's it Skinner if and but you know what they'll say well we got close we got close and listen as a team that get gets close in the first and second round all the time uh no so who are you starting my original question Skinner oh okay Skinner easily listen Pickard had an incredible record he's Calvin Pickard fine he's fine and this is not the time for fine this is the stanley cup final yeah the only thing that gives me pause is like if you're you're getting a baseline with pickard that you don't really have with skinner and the baseline's not good enough yeah i guess yeah but like the the ceiling can be as good
Starting point is 01:08:50 he didn't even and we did talk about this he didn't look good uh during the comeback in game four he only allowed the one goal we mentioned it yeah yeah but oh that dude was synchronized swimming in his net he was all over the freaking place skinner is the only one of the two with the ceiling high enough to do this and if he doesn't well i'll see you wednesday to talk about the panthers winning back yeah you went down with the ship at least uh so okay uh if you don't start Skinner game six, you're trading him this offseason. Yes. Okay. Yeah.

Starting point is 01:09:44 scotiabank.com slash H-I-S-A to learn more. Scotia Bank. You're richer than you think. julian mckenzie is a guy that writes stuff and he wrote a book he did that's like articles but many all together right steve really easy to do i've heard it's simple uh black aces essential stories from hockey's black trailblazers by julian mckenzie it's out february 3rd 2026 but you can already pre-order it i got a question what is it steve yes do you think julian left his book to the last minute and had to cram his entire book into like two weeks i know for a fact
Starting point is 01:10:21 he didn't which already makes him a better author because the authors i know that sit at this desk that's how they write their books well you know is my strategy for book writing so wrong i've been a bestseller twice you know maybe this is how we should go about things you know when i wake up in the morning i don't just wake up steve dangle i wake up as two-time canadian best-selling author steve dangle that's true it's factual julian mckenzie's book black aces coming out february 3rd that's right 2026 right in time for the olympics um so while you're watching all that great hockey and other sports you'll be able to read julian's book uh and you can now pre-order right now indigo chapters wherever else you get your book independent bookstores across the country
Starting point is 01:11:05 okay so we have the preliminary six players from all the olympic winter games in 2026 rosters coming out today uh and of course they're saving the united states and canada for later uh but they've actually come out so we're we're we're gonna get to those but i'm gonna start with what they started with so uh latvia went first with their six players uh and how many of them have a last name ending in s all of them hey uh i was actually gonna lead in with that so i'm glad that you said no no it's fine i'm glad you said it we have elvis merslikens we have uh balanskins we've got uh i never get his name right uh ables uh with the flyers yeah uh we've got archer silovs who's uh had a great year in abbotsford interesting they named two goalies uh teddy bluger
Starting point is 01:11:53 because he's got an s actually in his name this is his real name and i love latvian names can we do a brief aside for the silovs controversially why is that a controversy though in the with the aberts for canucks over the weekend that all right can you can you explain the story okay okay hang on let me let me do it yeah you go go ahead okay so there was a face-off it's charlotte checkers yes charlotte checkers aberts for canucks yes so there's a face-off in the canucks zone silas is facing the other way i want to bring up the picture yeah the he's facing the end boards he's getting his blocker back on or whatever after taking a drink of water the ref drops the puck anyway and the checkers score on a goalie who's
Starting point is 01:12:45 not looking they freak out they lose their mind this is the calder cup final and they the ref ends up saying no no goal waves it off abbotsford comes down the other way about five minutes later later and wins it they won the game so if you're charlotte you're like we should be up two games to none because they actually won game two it was jim benning's nephew i believe oh scored the winner against the abbotsford canucks hilarious jim's loving this no notes absolutely perfect jesse have you been able to find it yet uh no because all of the the quick highlights and bring up they keep coming up from the last game here it is uh there you go yeah hold on keep keep talking jesse's finding it so this cheeses me off a lot and i'll tell you why
Starting point is 01:13:37 this shouldn't be a goal it should oh there it is he's facing the other way yeah it's three three in overtime by the way he's had an unbelievable game look at the shots 49 to 28 for oh that's For CLT, that's really unfortunate. It is. It's unfortunate. Why is it CLT? All Charlotte. Focus on the play.
Starting point is 01:14:07 That's what you did for Charlotte? Anyway, he's facing the other way. Puck gets dropped. They get a shot off. It's in. This can't happen. No. It can't happen.
Starting point is 01:14:19 You can't allow this. I'll tell you why this pisses me off. And I'll never forget and I'll never forgive when it comes to this damn goal okay the 2012 calder cup final if i'm not mistaken it was two nothing for the norfolk admirals tampa's farm team john cooper's the coach go look at the roster of that team they were friggin stacked i'm pretty sure they had kucherov palat uh tyler johnson and a guy adam knows mike costco oh wow in overtime a game three games it's super important you're down to nothing you win this game it's a series you lose you're dead like it's a huge swing
Starting point is 01:14:57 in this series there's a weird thing where they lose track of where the puck is costco gets the shot because he finds the puck kind of like bx's overtime winner against the sharks uh from the 2011 run think think think of that one they lost sight of the puck he fires this knuckler at the net it goes in raw here's the difference it was offside they don't catch it in the moment but they catch it before the players leave the building and they were asked about it and ben scrivens they asked his opinion he was the marley's goalie at the time and he goes can i swear and the ahl releases a statement and they just go yep that was offside are bad I'm gonna be honest that is I don't think that's the same at all we are so sorry anyway play on
Starting point is 01:15:49 no here's here's why I'm mad about it the Marley's got fucked and in this situation they get it right I'm not saying hey the Marley's got fucked so you should also fuck the Abbotsford Canuck that's kind of what you're saying no I'm saying I will be forever salty about that stupid I don't think these scenarios are even close I don't think they're saying you know it's a cup final is starting and they made the wrong choice this is starting the play when you shouldn't have started play yes which is i think a different situation than a game that's happening and you miss a call i think games it all the time there are missed calls you're infringing on my right to die mad i do that a lot and to cope yeah why can't i just cope and see
Starting point is 01:16:35 i feel like i feel like in this scenario the linesman was chatting with the the goalie and he didn't have any of his equipment on and they started playing. They're like, oh, we shouldn't have started play and they stopped everything. Right. And they all made the right decision. Why are refs and linesmen getting worse at this?
Starting point is 01:16:52 I don't know. I don't know. Right? Maybe it's because we're just noticing it more. I think replay is helpful. No, no, no. It's just face-offs. Just face-offs.
Starting point is 01:17:04 Oh, just face-offs? Oh, dude, this playoff in the Stanley Cup playoffs. last two games have been like every single face off it's a oh no we need to stop and go back like they're dropping the puck consistently and then calling it back because they're like oh no i didn't drop that fairly it does seem like they're getting more egregious yeah and and and who uh pointed that out he's been saying that for years he's been banging that freaking drum you're just not a fan of the no the fake puck drop i hate that no i hate all of it yeah you I don't care if it's dropped unfairly.
Starting point is 01:17:37 Drop it. Yeah. Drop it. It's like a dog. Drop it. Rubber. And by the way, if you can't drop a puck fairly, what are you doing there? Honestly.
Starting point is 01:17:46 Can't drop a puck? Honestly. Is that hard? It's a good point. Like the rest of the game is hard. Dropping the puck. That's the easy part. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:17:55 I don't move them off. Get them centered. And then it got so bad that it was a game for dry side. I had to go talk to the ref who had to tell him, go talk to the linesman. because they were so confused about these puck drops that keep getting called back. We're not here to see you, Stripes. We're not here to see you.
Starting point is 01:18:12 It's too much, and I think you're right that it's getting a little worse with these face-offs. Can I ask a really stupid question? Sure. And then I would love to get back to the Olympic roster. No, no, no. I think the Charlie Shackles thing was... Why do you have to drop it?
Starting point is 01:18:26 Just put it on the ground. I don't know, man. Let's not get existential. Let's save that for July. No, but like, why? To leave it on the ground and go, Yeah, you put it at the dot and you blow your whistle? Yeah, I tried to drop it in the middle of a circle.
Starting point is 01:18:37 Oh, and I fucked it up. Of course you did. Why are you dropping it? Are the players allowed to go before it's... Well, then leave it there. All right. I don't know. Anyway, that's just my question.
Starting point is 01:18:47 Isn't that not how a lacrosse face-off is done? Yes. You put the ball in the thing, and then they have their little scrum? No, no, no, no, no, no. Let's drop the ball. You know what they should do is go from higher. They should get on their little feetsies and cozies. No, they should actually have a machine gun where it fires it at the ice,
Starting point is 01:19:02 and you better get the fuck out of the way. like the makeup gun from the sims yeah it's just somebody hanging over top shooting it at that would you advocate for one team starting each period with possession no so the road team gets to start the first and third period with possession behind their own net no it's just too adventurous for hockey what do you mean it's too advent they would never do it how is that too adventurous it's too adventurous it's scary it's terrifying so it's like asking the yankees to change their uniform while you have the tip off and the team that doesn't get possession you alternate after that right so in the second half time you all change possessions yeah what if you
Starting point is 01:19:42 do that so hockey's like if there was a tip off every time hockey is literally we're tipping off all the time we should fix this face-offs are tremendously boring most of the time in the in the in the playoffs they can be really exciting right yeah you get a play big they are they're huge but but most of the time let's be honest the face-offs getting in the way of the shit we really want which is them i don't know about that so i don't mind jesse's suggestion because it creates flow yeah i'm not here to watch them do face i'm here to watch them i'm only asking for at the beginning of the first yeah uh second and third periods like during the game you need face-offs because like how do you start possession again right just leave the puck in the ice like a leave
Starting point is 01:20:21 the puck in the ice go fight for it i don't mind that either like put it in the dot and then when you blow your whistle everybody go i think it's like it's like a rug thing where they they scrum the ball what do they call it also oh i want to put the puck over here oh i can't your feet are there because you're here for no reason yeah okay that why are you here that's a great point yes it is if you put the the puck in the circle and then the ref stands at the side and blows the whistle then you get the ref out of the play to start the play yes and they're not interfering with the face off like i think you might figure something out and you know what you know that also leads to uh another point that i made which are linesmen are useless you don't need them
Starting point is 01:21:01 anymore yes a ref could do that you can have you can have electronic yeah uh goals and offsides called easily you are we are getting closer to not needing linesmen if you go with the they don't have to drop the puck anymore like i'm not even i'm not trying to take their jobs away like adam anti-union adam i don't know what what do you we're about to go with our sticks and you're standing right you're standing away yeah i also having less bodies on the ice is probably a good thing yeah i have been saying that they've got an almost an entire extra line of people out there you're standing right here okay guess i'll try to win it this way then get out of the way why are you here could they have a thing that lifts the puck up from underneath
Starting point is 01:21:50 yes you couldn't now you're cooking but i don't think it'd be able to get away fast enough for them not to injure themselves yeah you know i think we go back to the the the puck cannon so somebody is hanging above the ice and then fires the cannon at at you and you better you know if you if you get hit you're probably going to get injured but that's how you should do face up and the more problems the problems are the same problems you just yell at the guy from a few feet away hey hey back up back up why do you why are you right there just fires the puck out of their cannon yeah somewhere on the ice honestly if face offs were done from a top down drop from center ice it'd make more sense it'd make more so the thing they always keep calling back these face
Starting point is 01:22:34 offs in the stanley cup finals because they're saying the puck's not hitting the ice i don't think it should hit the ice like if you time it so that you're when the guy's dropping it and you get your puck like right midair while it's while it's coming down why is that not a fair thought is that it's not in play until it touches the ice have it come down plinko style and you don't know where it's going all right all right anyway it looks pretty good a top-down cannon it might make sense um latvia looks great man finland's team looks amazing ranted and aho bark off sorrows high skin and lindell yikes uh and that's you know you're like well they left off this great finished player don't worry they'll be on the team it's okay yes uh sweden kneelander kempi
Starting point is 01:23:16 head which kneelander this is important uh william okay although alex could probably you know be there as a sub uh headman raymond dolling landis cog that one was surprising it's a great story and i mean listen they're doing this to generate buzz yep yep and that's a great story yeah what are you doing i'm looking at the names for team italia oh there you go okay all right because they did it sideways we got lucas yeah and then thomas larkin and then you gotta get them adam let me hear the music in his name thomas larkin thomas larkin of the schwinnegan wild wings you know what drives me crazy too it's the the way that they did the graphic is the the first name is one way the last the last name is the other way so there's just
Starting point is 01:24:08 You know you can just pull up the list. No, I won't. I'm doing it this way, Jesse. Diego. You know they printed a list. Costner. Can I be a very ignorant Canadian for a minute? There's a Schwinnegan in Germany?
Starting point is 01:24:20 No, it's Schwinnegan. That's what I just said. Yeah. Schwinnegan. It's a German team he plays for. Oh. Yeah, the Wild Wings. The Schwinnegan Wild Wings.
Starting point is 01:24:30 Oh, there you go. All right. I don't know. That or it's a senior men's league in Quebec. Can we just get to these fucking names, man? Holy shit. That's what we're doing. All right.
Starting point is 01:24:39 Now, here's an Italian name. I'm looking at it. It's Daniel. Okay. All right. But it's Mantenuto. Mantenuto of Bolzano in Austria. Damien Clara.
Starting point is 01:24:51 Yeah, there are a lot of Italians in Austria, though. Tommy. Is that a thing? Yeah. Yeah, of course they are. I don't know, man. I'm not from there. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 01:25:01 Tommy Perderler. German Perderler. Perderler. I don't know who he plays for. uh the val pusa terry's wolves oh the pusa terry's wolves that's a local toronto joke for anybody and that's out of business um uh hey check here so uh might have an easier time with this one hilariously alan walsh client yeah none of them are none of them are noted alan walsh clients because paturka's uh paturka's also not on that
Starting point is 01:25:28 list but we'll get to it later he's alan fellow uh posturnak niches zaka gudis dostal palat My boy, Andre. Two Ducks. Yeah, Gudis was the captain of Czechia when they won the World Championship, so that's where that comes from. Two Ducks, two Bruins. Switzerland's team is pretty stacked, too,
Starting point is 01:25:45 and that is so nice to hear. There's another emerging incredible country. Yossi, Hischer, Siegenthaler, Mayer, Fiala, Niederreiter. Three Devils. Oh, Team Switzerland are the Devils. Like, listen, growing up, there wouldn't have been six NHL players on a lot of these teams.
Starting point is 01:26:05 No, no. Now, shall we get to Deutschland? Uber Alice? Yes. Dreisaitl, Stützle, Seider, Grubauer, Sturm, and Lukas Reichel. And Lukas Reichel. But not JJ Paterka.
Starting point is 01:26:18 Lukas Reichel and not JJ Paterka was pretty surprising. Niko Sturm and not JJ Paterka is also pretty surprising, honestly. He'll be on the team, whatever. Hot take, Germany has got an outside chance to make some noise in this tournament. I think you're absolutely right.
Starting point is 01:26:35 Okay, so for Slovakia. Goaltending is pretty bad. Whatever. You hate Grubauer. Yeah, he hates stopping pucks. That's why. Go look at his numbers. He hates the Seattle Crackers.
Starting point is 01:26:49 I think they hate him right back. If you ran into Grubauer on the street, I'm afraid what you'd do to him. If I ran into Grubauer on the street, I'd slide between his legs. Oh. What? Look at his numbers.
Starting point is 01:27:02 All right. Look at his number. All right. Slovakia. Martin Fervery. Fervery, yeah. Fervery, yeah. Slavkovski, Tatar, Cernak, Nemec, and Pospisil.
Starting point is 01:27:14 Pospisil. So that's cool. Tatar. Denmark. I can't believe how many NHL players are on Denmark. I know. Ehlers, Freddie Anderson, Lars Eller, Oliver Bjorkstrand. Now, this one I don't know.
Starting point is 01:27:29 Jonas. Rondeberg. Yeah, the reason for that is he's not in the NHL. Okay, and then... No, Vegas Golden Knights property, yeah. Oh, so he's with the Henderson Silver Knights. I assume, yes. I haven't seen him in the NHL.
Starting point is 01:27:43 His name on the list they released, his name next to his Vegas Golden Knights. I did not know that, okay. He's in their system somewhere. He's marked on. Jesper Jensen-Abo is the other guy. Who is not on the NHL team. Yo, Klagenfurt.
Starting point is 01:27:57 The Klagenfurt AC. Huge representation from the Austrians. Yeah, the Austrian League's good. The Austrian League's got a lot of players here. Now, Team France. Mm-hmm. Okay. Cristobal Huet.
Starting point is 01:28:09 Alexandre Texier. Yes. Who we know. Pierre-Edouard Belmar, who actually played really, really well at the World Championships this year. France was good. He could still probably be in the NHL if he wanted to be. Now, it's Jordan Perret. Jordan Perret, yeah.
Starting point is 01:28:25 Jordan Perret. Not to be confused with Cedric. johan atuvio atuvio uh i know that to you i know that name and you're butchering it i don't know i don't remember who he used to play for but he used to be in the nhl hugo gale and jules i need julian here bosque b-o-s-c-q bosque oh bosque i thought it was bosco iowa The Heartlanders of the ECHL. There you go. Oh, dear.
Starting point is 01:28:57 The... Oh, dear? Oh, dear. I mean, ECHL. McDavid, Crosby, McKinnon, McCarr, Reinhardt, and Point for Team Canada. One more time.
Starting point is 01:29:07 McDavid, Crosby, McKinnon, McCarr, Reinhardt, and Point. I'm surprised Bennett's not on there just because of the playoffs. That's crazy. Like, he might... He might not even make it. I know.
Starting point is 01:29:19 He was on the Four Nations team. Come on. And scored in the final. Yeah, he's going to make it. And scored in the final. He'll be there. So that's who we have. Marchand's a fascinating one.
Starting point is 01:29:26 We don't have Team USA yet. Marchand looked like, okay, this is his last hurrah with Team Canada. Yep. And he's gotten better since. And they won. So, I don't know. You kind of got to bring them back, don't you? I think so.
Starting point is 01:29:39 20 minutes away from Team USA. Okay. Well, we won't be recording in 20 minutes. But I'm sure it looks something like this. Hughes, Hughes, Matthews, Kachuk, Kachuk, and Hellebuck. No, Matthews. Oh, that's a good one. Nice.
Starting point is 01:29:54 Stollers. Patcher ready. By the way, Stollers should have an outside shot. He should. He should. You got Hellebuck, Ottinger. And who was the third? It was good.
Starting point is 01:30:09 Swayman. Swayman. That's a good list. I don't think Stollers has a shot. What if he kills it, though, in the season? All right. I guess everybody's got a shot. Okay.
Starting point is 01:30:18 Everybody's got a shot. Last year, we would have been like, Stuart Skeeter's got a shot at Team Canada. Both Canadian goalies. I mean, both Toronto goalies. Sorry. Both Canadian goalies. We should wrap this up.
Starting point is 01:30:33 No, we can get to some questions. Yeah, let's do it. Let's do the press conference. All right. The coffee only lasts so long. The Steve Dangle press conference. Just of notes, while the show has been recorded, uh the marner group has canceled their charity event that they were that they hold in toronto
Starting point is 01:30:53 every year uh it's usually around july 10th july 11th because of the contract situation and everything else and oh anyway the the notice went out today i thought i should mention it um also during our show there was news out of pittsburgh and it's uh it's pretty shocking news that it would come out this early but yevgeny malkin's not gonna receive a contract extension from the pittsburgh penguins yeah josh yohi of the athletic year ahead of time he's done man josh yohi of the athletic reported that it isn't clear if malkin plans to retire next season which will be his 20th season but they are not expected to offer him a contract oh so they didn't announce it no okay he's reporting he's reporting that yeah it's not something josh is pretty i feel
Starting point is 01:31:41 like you don't go to print with a report like that unless you're pretty sure on what Kyle Dubas is thinking and to be honest with you they shouldn't no no I know they shouldn't I know but here's how this goes down so let's look at the Leafs for example they're about to lose Marner for nothing have we regarded that as generally good or bad it's bad asset management it is bad to lose a player for nothing at some point if they don't trade any of these guys the Penguins are going to lose letang and malkin and crosby and and and and and for nothing is this them trying to open the door to hey you're not coming back next year let's get something for you on the way out the door and get you a chance to win i think so why wouldn't it be listen respectfully
Starting point is 01:32:35 i love you know there's something there is something romantic about the idea of somebody spending their entire career with the team. But if it doesn't happen, does anybody look at Ray Bork like he wasn't a good player? Was anybody unhappy that Ray Bork won that cup with the Avalanche? No.
Starting point is 01:32:51 The mayor of Boston invited him to have a parade for himself. Is Rob Blake not a good LA King because he went deep with the Colorado Avalanche? He won. He won with the Avalanche. Yeah. So he went and he won his cup with the Avalanche too.
Starting point is 01:33:04 Is he not a good LA King? Yes. I mean, come on. I feel like at a certain point, Listen, I understand there's some sensitivity with that, with Penguins fans and that sort of thing. Be open to the future. Don't be stuck in the past.
Starting point is 01:33:19 If he gets traded and you guys get a King's Ransom for him, Crosby too. That sets up the next era. You are going to be ass, ass, so ass. Rust and all those guys are Raquel. They're all being traded. You're going to be so... you're gonna be one of the worst teams we've ever seen honest to god yep you're gonna be
Starting point is 01:33:41 mckenna's gonna be a penguin you're gonna be like pre you're gonna be like 2003 ish penguins you're gonna be shocking yeah mark andre flurry first overall penguins this is a chance to open the door to the next era but if that's not what they want it's not what they want i think that they i think you got to be open to the next year that this year is over i think what does what does them yeah i know but what does i'm asking the fans what does them completing their the next let's say crosby does two more years and the penguins guys are not making the playoffs next year unless something goofy happens it's hockey always have to be open to it okay so you keep so we're keeping crosby we're keeping him here like he's our infinity stone and he is he's the whole
Starting point is 01:34:22 gauntlet and he doesn't make the playoffs are you like well good because at least he remained a penguin the whole time or do you want to see sid go on after he's given so much to your city to to go find success not just at the olympics yeah like with the flyers or something well yeah no i'm kidding i'm not saying you know he teams up with ovi it'll probably be vegas and mitch and he'll score the game when assisted by mitch marner i can see people answering yes to the first part of your question and saying we had three cups a sustained of like 18 years of straight success i'd rather us lose this year and crosby retire a penguin than him go on and win okay i think i can see some hardcore pittsburgh fans and crosby fans who want him to stick around
Starting point is 01:35:09 forever saying yeah i'm fine with the losing and crosby staying here i think that that is unfortunate that you have that viewpoint i understand it uh i don't even really totally fault you for having it but just so you know it's completely irrational and unreasonable and not human at all that's like the most robotic fucking take it's like no it looks good on the back of a hockey card that it is it is and listen take it from a guy none of my heroes stuck around i fully expect austin matthews to end up playing for that new arizona franchise one day i i'm not always detroit i don't feel like the who are the guys that really did it and stuck it with one team like sakic was with the same franchise it's not the same team lemieux and eisenman and sakic yeah
Starting point is 01:35:52 Yeah, you're right. But Sackick doesn't count because that's two different teams. Yeah, it is. It's two different teams. Same franchise, two teams. Doesn't matter, two teams. Interesting. Interesting way of looking at it.
Starting point is 01:36:00 Shane Doan. Also, didn't Sackick sign an offer sheet or something? Yeah, with the Rangers. Shane Doan, who's a Leaf right now. Shane Doan, who's a Leaf. Yeah, right now. Shane Doan, who did go. Doan doesn't count.
Starting point is 01:36:12 He played for the Jets. That's true. Yeah, you just said franchise. You're right. You're right. You're right. You're right. But this is my point.
Starting point is 01:36:19 Oh, he needs to do that. I'm sorry. Is Sidney Crosby already not one of the greatest players of all time? You're making this about Sid, though. Malkin's the same. It's the same. We got lit up. No, he's not.
Starting point is 01:36:31 He's Malkin. We're not having the same conversations about Malkin we're having with Sid. I think that's unfair to Malkin. Malkin is a Hall of Famer. Sid's one of the best of all time. That's the difference. Penguins fans last year wanted to crucify people for suggesting Crosby be traded. Yes.
Starting point is 01:36:51 I am curious to see if the reaction is the same for Malkin. I think we're warming up both players. I think you start with Malkin, and that's how you then go on to the next conversation. The Pittsburgh Penguins' unwillingness to move out of the past and into the future has killed their last two seasons, and I would say even the season before that. No, no, I'm telling you, though. Management has no say in it.
Starting point is 01:37:15 What do you mean management? Well, no, current management has no say in it. Yeah. Previous management did. they did but it's too late so now we have today's problems right yeah and crosby's not going anywhere if he doesn't want to mulligan's not going anywhere if he doesn't want to i think letang's in the same boat if mulligan is open to this it could change everything i think by the end of this season kyle dubas will be the highest paid pittsburgh penguin how much does he make seven
Starting point is 01:37:46 million seven and what's uh what's the current uh i think crosby's the only one above him oh maybe malkin no no carlson 10 million oh yeah he makes 11 but i think the sharks are paying a million my brain won't it's like listen man we got a lot going on carlson's not a pen i know he's never he's also never been i don't know when they're gonna i don't know when they're gonna that is not by the way a guy that literally skipped training camp because he was injured and then the general manager. It's very believable he was injured, Adam. What?
Starting point is 01:38:18 Derek Harlson. Okay, so why did Kyle Dubas say his intentions need to match his goals at the end of the season? And by the way, do you think Penguins writers were soft on him for missing training camp? I don't think they were. Is he trying to make the environment uninhabitable? Well, sure.
Starting point is 01:38:35 It already is. Maybe the Penguins are stupid like a fox. Maybe they saw the job he did with Toronto and they're like, this is the perfect person to destroy our franchise stop this is the perfect person to tear it all down the pittsburgh penguins have sydney crosby at 8.7 and eric carlson at 10 million those are the only two contracts above cal dubas's he's at seven million i think by the end of the season you're thinking crosby and carlson are gone uh i think by wasn't for sure by trade deadline yes you got to trade carl i think mulligan's a pretty big fish at the trade deadline
Starting point is 01:39:08 yeah then like he's not coming back i think they've made their intentions clear that he is now like being shopped yeah right but again with those guys they'll never quite be bad enough that's yeah so i think that's why that's why i keep saying it that's why dubas is wanting to move off a market here's the best way to move on from your stars right your stars are traded to another team say we're not extending you a year ahead of time that too your car your stars are You trade it to another team, and they go on a run, and you get to watch because your team's not going to make the playoffs, and they usher in the future. Guys, Brock Nelson got the Islanders a first in Callum Ritchie. No, he's not an Islander anymore.
Starting point is 01:39:51 Betrayal. Islanders fans are furious they got a first in Callum Ritchie for him. They're furious. Now, listen, Brock Nelson is not either of those two men, but I understand the point you're trying to make. guys, Sidney Crosby could hand you more cups by accepting a trade. Malkin could hand you more cups by accepting a trade.
Starting point is 01:40:10 That would be the ultimate way to go out for the city, wouldn't it? Nah. Okay. Or not. You bought the jersey and the jersey's yours. You're right. Pick knife. Oh, we won cups, so you have to stay here now. They already live there. They love it there. Who doesn't love Pittsburgh?
Starting point is 01:40:26 You know how winning the cup was fun? And like something I would die for don't you don't you feel like doing that again soon i'm mad at you for not trying to do it again i'm mad at you as someone who's never gotten that feeling like and you've had it and you're denying yourself that feeling i would legitimately ask crosby because i hear he's like the most loyal guy out there i would legitimately ask him sit respectfully what is that loyalty going to bring you towards the end of your career what are your goals for your last couple seasons honestly and how does that loyalty what what does that loyalty look like to you because i don't think
Starting point is 01:41:04 him accepting a trade is disloyalty does team canada winning stuff internationally wet his whistle enough to keep him oh come on it has to what do you think he was doing at the world championships no no i'm saying does it wet his whistle enough to be like all right fine i'll stay here oh i don't know if canada gets their show on it's the stanley cup are you kidding me what If Crosby believes that him on the Penguins makes them closer than we ever think everybody else believes they are closer. I think that is 100% true.
Starting point is 01:41:31 I feel like you ask him that question and his response is that I think the Penguins are a playoff team and once we're in the playoffs, we got a shot. I've told this story. I'll tell it again. Man, I can't wait for them to roll out Tristan Jari for the third year in a row.
Starting point is 01:41:45 In Matt Sundin's book that just came out last year, I think it was the 07-08 season, his final year with Toronto. he talked about how he really didn't feel like that team was far off oh honey yeah oh yeah i get it it's not rational late girl you were far let me hold your giant swedish hand when i tell you this you were nowhere fucking close holy shit the 0708 leafs it wasn't legal back then mats uh might have been decriminalized i'm not sure dude these guys do not think that way about the team that they love i'm not saying they're poor evaluators of talents
Starting point is 01:42:32 but they're playing maybe a little bit they're players that's why you don't want players running teams right yeah man yeah anyway this is to me this is pretty nakedly setting the stage for and i think it'll be malcolm malcolm will be first and i bet letang is second and then ultimately when it'll come to Crosby. That's what I think is going to happen. Oh, boy. But I think you've got to trade
Starting point is 01:42:54 Malkin LeTang first to warm people up. The LeTang thing is dicey because LeTang is signed for three more seasons. That's $6.1 million. And he's 38 years old. That was such a bad sign.
Starting point is 01:43:07 I don't know. I don't know who's taken that. Would you take him in three? Would you take him in half? You can't retain on that contract. Yeah, if you're pissed. Like, I don't know what to do. this your team like toronto you need a puck moving defenseman you need him to retire after next season
Starting point is 01:43:25 i need two firsts to retain on that deal to retain half yeah i need two first and if you're the team who's taking him you need to bank on that he's not playing 27 28 at 41 for 6.1 million dollars if we go deep in the playoffs he's playing 14 minutes yeah like yeah like holy shit how much of letang is left great question i think we haven't seen good uh in in like a high stakes scenario for quite some time right well except that one regular season game against chicago and the penguins completely shit themselves and missed the playoff 30 points in 74 games i don't know if he was in that game but it's not bad it's not chris letang prime i mean it's good how's his defense how is his defense it's probably better than carlson like
Starting point is 01:44:12 well that's that's like saying i can outrun your kid yeah what are you talking about i don't know i listen the last penguins fans are gonna get annually mad at us and i i totally understand yeah but it's also not rational i think the the crosby stuff i think is different you treat him differently i understand that they're trading malcolm yeah if he wants to go they're they're trying to set the table for trading mulligan there you go okay jesse uh last thing we'll end on this quickie quickly as a quickie because nicky wrote in um probably off topic topic but how about that rafael devers trade this isn't that off topic of the topic where we are right now because of the pittsburgh penguins who own the boston red sox as well as the pittsburgh penguins
Starting point is 01:44:59 as well as liverpool fc who just won the premier league over in the premier league um the fenway sports group who is owned by john henry the longtime owner of the boston red sox along with a whole host of like celebrity investors and people who have money who throw money into this thing and also own a piece of fenway sports group have this history of being very flippant giving out deals and then reneging on those giant contracts when they don't want to hand out that money anymore did you see how they sewered him on the way out too yeah yeah their whole excuse for trading Devers is because they he didn't he wanted to move their expectations
Starting point is 01:45:38 they they asked him to move the first base and he didn't really want to do it and they were mad at him for that because they gave him three hundred and thirteen million dollars over ten years and they believe that he should be able to do whatever he should listen to them no matter what they want him to do that's how that works I got an idea
Starting point is 01:45:53 you give over three hundred million to a guy you let him play his position because he's worth three exactly or you don't sign him yeah so with the with the Fenway sports group and owning the penguins and and the way they've been acting with the red sox who they also own it's a good thing now pittsburgh penguins fans that there's rumors that they want to sell the team and it's pretty much confirmed by all the reports that they want to get out of the hockey business having them being so volatile owning the red sox has been terrible for red sox fans and for
Starting point is 01:46:25 the organization as a whole they've traded mookie bets chris sale uh devers and xander bogarts who We're all top talent in the Major League Baseball, and they have nothing to show for it right now. If they had all those guys. They'd be unreal. And this past weekend, they swept the Yankees, and they traded their best hitter on Sunday night. Like, that's what they did because they don't want to hand out this cash anymore
Starting point is 01:46:48 because they have a petty little behind-the-scenes feud with Devers. Heading into the week, the number one story with the Red Sox should be, we swept the Yankees. Exactly. And it's this. You don't want this ownership group owning your hockey team. Yep. they're gonna make more decisions like this and they're gonna bleed over into your hockey team
Starting point is 01:47:06 it's a good thing that they want to get out of the hockey business and that they haven't had a good time running an nhl team yep they've done a good job with uh with liverpool uh they did a good job now they were not doing a good job for a little bit right they refused to spend money and now they're uh actually spending big money they're they're handing out a 118 million dollar contract to uh i'm gonna do my best german florian wurtz who's an attacking midfielder they they just got him and they're gonna sign him after they won the premier league so like now they're investing money there and the conspiracy theories are out because that was two days ago they hand out this contract to votes and two days later they get rid of a 113 million dollar contract off of their payroll
Starting point is 01:47:51 yeah it's not a great look for the organization and that just speaks to the volatile nature of how john henry and all his investors are running this thing i assume this would happen to the penguins in some way in terms of like who wants to be there and one day and who doesn't want to be there the next day so it's good that they don't want to run your team anymore as long as they don't get rid of mo sala uh half the stuff in my in leo's room is mo sala oh yeah because because my father-in-law just got back from anfield where he was there for the crystal palace game and he's got this big mo salla scarf leo's jersey says mo salla nice um please do not get rid of that player well you just follow the player to the next team right uh absolutely not no you can't do that no family
Starting point is 01:48:37 because my father-in-law has totally indoctrinated his grandson with liverpool liverpool liverpool so don't you dare yeah now they're they're all thumbs up for running liverpool because they won but yeah recently they haven't been the greatest but this year like how can you not complain about winning the championship you know but yeah yeah the fenway like the sooner they get out of hockey oh i think the sooner they get out of sports i i i honestly these guys like one thing that that kind of goes unnoticed is how they gutted the penguins organization of some of their best and longest serving employees people in order to centralize them people that you don't hear in the media in the hockey department the people who don't even make the page on the like hockey staff
Starting point is 01:49:16 we're talking people who just work there yeah and i i i feel like it should be mentioned that there was like 15 or 20 of them let go and you know the whole point of that was because this is what this is what fenway does they don't like losing money year over year like we always talk about the winnipeg jets they light money on fire year over year but where do they make it back asset value there you go right now thank you for having that for me they have they bought the penguins for like 900 mil or something like that they're going to be able to sell it for like 1.6 6.7 back to the guys they bought it from is very odd they're gonna pay well they're not necessary that's not the mario group is not the leading group there's another group and they're
Starting point is 01:49:56 the mario groups just come in later interesting but the point i'm trying to make is that they've made five or six hundred million dollars off of this already no question probably more and you look at money is fake you look at how they um they tried to run it like a corporation in the sense that you centralize everything oh we don't need an hr manager locally we don't need a social media person locally we don't need or whatever it is right and now whoever buys them is gonna have to hire all those positions back it's like they've gutted they've gutted a good chunk of what the penguins were and then they're gonna have to go find these whoever comes in is gonna have to go find those 20 or 30 people who are and listen their hockey team doesn't have a gm sports yeah
Starting point is 01:50:38 100 sports teams take advantage of the fact that everybody wants to work for them so they pay you 20 percent less than everybody else like that's the one secret that nobody talks about is that you could do one job for maple leaf sports and entertainment the same job for non-descript corporation you're gonna make more at non-descript corporation and you know the penguins had these devoted people that were there for years and years and years and these guys just came in torched them all and are walking away it's i man if federal sports group bought maple leaf sports and entertain i'm glad we have ed rogers at least the guy wants to win i'm not you're not no i would rather somebody else own a sports team in
Starting point is 01:51:12 this town. Like they own all of the sports teams. You had me until then. I would prefer someone who wants to win. Hey, he signed Guerrero. Hey, how about a name on something that isn't Rodgers? Yeah, Larry Tannenbaum, who owns the tempo. Oh,
Starting point is 01:51:28 and they're going to kick him out of the MLSC circle. So they're getting pushed out. But yeah, I don't know. No, like Ed Rodgers is a massive part of the Terrence and Phillip-ication of Canada. There is one, there's like three
Starting point is 01:51:45 corporations in the whole country. Literally. We set it up that way. Bell, Rogers, Hawkins Cheezies. That's what we've got. Yep. SDPN. Yeah, we exist. We're here. We're here. SDPN. Bell, Rogers, Hawkins Cheezies.
Starting point is 01:52:01 Alright, SDPN. And we'll wrap it up there. Yes. Hawkins Cheezies. And compliments. Can I just say this? Yeah, Galen West. I'll beat the shit out of you, Adam Lyle. Don't you dare. On the cheesy scale, they're the best one.
Starting point is 01:52:15 But cheesies suck. There you go. Cheesies are terrible. I've taken my MVP trophy and going home.
