Woo! Woo! I got nothing.
Got nothing?
Yo.
the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake
let's go baby canada big winners and by the way you know what i love about this i love about this
um is the fact that everybody made sure to say hey listen you know for a made-up tournament it
was pretty good uh and here's here's i'm here to tell you something camera on me for just a second
every tournament is a made-up tournament every tournament is a made-up tournament when you put
your country's jersey on it matters and oh baby did last night matter that was one of the best
hockey games of all time and i want to the lead story the highlight the headline
jordan binnington i'm so sorry jordan i am so gosh darn sorry i i think that is the most
canadian way to start this yep yep sorry i doubted you we are so sorry i doubted you you proved me
wrong who was canada's best player last night jordan binnington jordan binnington i was shocked
he didn't get mvp i was very surprised so was mcdavid yeah i'm sure he was he looked pretty
surprised i mean you know it's not fair at all what's that it's talking to someone on the way
here and maybe this is blind bias before his final shift i thought matthews was the best american
forward and i think there was an argument at the end of the game that marner was either the
best canadian forward i i think he was in the top three two they both had two primary assists yes
like just a crazy back and forth game congrats to everyone who said Canada 3-2 including including
our default Leafs coach Craig Berube he sure as shit did Adam Weil which is great did oh
uh I also bet at three woke up at eight and it's never been easier to do we'll get into
Jordan Bennington and we're gonna start with Jordan Bennington that's the that's the fair
thing to do um that is the thing that you need to do but I do want to do a quick shout out to
everybody new and old uh who tuned into the sdpn youtube channel last night uh between jesse's
pre-game stream and steve's uh in-game stream uh we had 400 000 views and still counting i can't
so i i just want to say that that is those are just titanic enormous numbers i also want to
thank jesse and steve and the entire team behind the scenes here for doing a great job it was
awesome some really great canadian heritage moments jesse uh jesse does a mean trivia
uh you do you do games well man i want to shout out maddie's friend from minnesota who tuned into
steve stream maddie soda all right couldn't they couldn't get the game so they're just listening
to you do the broadcast and they're even as an american they're happy with your call at the end
because of all of your excitement so shout out what's their name um justin shout out justin
honestly shout out just if you're in the car and you can only listen to a radio feed just put
steve on youtube on yeah and it's it's better straight up better it's straight up better
canada has it in the neutral zone they fish it out of their own end they're behind the net thank
you for the five gifted subs now jesse uh i i sent you a video uh and i want to play this video
of our king jordan bennington uh being asked to describe the kachuk brothers here you go
the kachuk brothers in one word um brothers
for anybody that missed it he said uh brothers one more time that's our king
describe the kachuk brothers in one word um brothers
oh man now let's let's let's talk about uh let's talk about Jordan meeting throughout the tournament
because uh i and listen the narrative and i was pushing it oh uh same was every game uh this guy's
giving up a soft goal and the difference between teams that win and teams that don't is often one
soft goal yep and last night there was no soft goal and some of the greatest like glove saving
action i've ever seen in my life like i've never i don't think broderick could do it like that one
of the greatest overtime performances i've ever seen from a goaltender amazing off the top of my
head it's tricky man carrie price game six against toronto 2021 was pretty spectacular yep um the
state should have won that game three four times well three four times and like two or three of
them off matthew stick yeah it's a different con so interesting a because you know it was it was
um uh the the conversation this morning could be austin matthews team america overtime hero
it very narrowly was that'd be awful it would be i would have hated that i wouldn't come into work
i take the day off um you know how i was on time today i wouldn't have been no absolutely not um
you guys on monday uh we're skipping friday's episode peter baugh uh posted this uh jordan
is a flawed goaltender but his career numbers in winner take all games are as follows
he made 23 of 30 saves in the 2019 second round game seven game against dallas i'm sure steve
remembers every minute of that how wait what was the number 29 of 30 saves oh 29 of 30 so i thought
you said 23 of 30 no that's awful 29 and still one yeah still one clutch uh 32 of 33 saves in
the 2019 stanley cup final uh game seven against boston and 31 of 33 in the four nations faceoff
final uh that's three and oh dude you could go back to his days in the ohl you really could like
with the Owen sound attack that that was a really um overmatched team in the OHL that shouldn't
have gone as deep into the playoffs as they did and they won the whole damn thing winner take all
game on the road it's it's what Bennington does he wins winner take all games on the road it felt
like he was pulling a prank on us when he's making those saves in overtime I was like this isn't
It's not the same guy.
It didn't feel real.
You know what?
He didn't look nervous.
No.
He didn't look nervous.
Man, ice in his veins.
I'm trying to think of another goalie who tricks us so effortlessly.
Remember the narrative getting pushed like eight years ago-ish
that Jonathan Quick wasn't good?
his numbers sucked he had a bad time towards the end of his tenure in la and they moved on from
him and then he got to new york and he was the best goaltender in the world again but like and
still currently is having a good time there was a time where in the regular season he was like
middle of the pack and he was the one good month goaltender oh there was like basically no one
you'd rather have a net in the spring yeah yeah yeah when you get to the playoffs jonathan quick
shows up yeah sorry and what i mean by that is like one good month in the regular season and
people like this guy stinks and then you get him in the playoffs and he's he's a god and like
listen listen hockey sports grossly overuse the been there before championship pedigree narrative
you saw it you mean binnington there before you say oh you see you saw it in that game you saw it
Um, like that is, uh, stupid.
The saves he made were stupid.
He made the best save of the tournament.
Uh, probably four different times last night.
Probably consecutively with those goal, those, those glove saves.
Brady could Chuck is going to see him in his nightmares.
Austin Matthews is going to see him in his nightmares.
and that matthews line had it they had it all night they were great the kachuk brothers on
the wings of austin matthews should violate the geneva convention yeah and they were unbelievable
when matthew was out there now that was that was a factor yeah i mean you healthy scratch kyle connor
and matthew kachuk is only able to give you under seven minutes that's a killer yeah that's a bad
one and i'm gonna say i mean it's hard you don't know what happened during the game but like that's
an error of judgment no that's on that's like there's no one to blame there because if matthew
kachuk tells you he's good to go you play him you play him you don't have you can't not you can't
tell him that you're gonna bench him and if something happens during the game where he's like
i'm no longer able to go that's just what happens you know you can't make the decision ahead of time
and try and predict that like he won't finish the game yeah i think on their their end that's just
the way the game works sometimes some guys go down you know in a in a tournament like this i mean
yeah hey uh one of the best players in the world you got to pick up
you know another three or four minutes do you think you can do it right of course they can so
we're gonna double shift either like matthews or eichel or maybe one of the kachuk brothers or
genzel or yeah like they have options yeah right that's just the game lark like i don't we're all
over the place i don't know what direction to take this in well we're you know i don't think
that's your role yeah don't worry you'd be all over the place i'll bring it back to center it's
all good well like i mean like we we are on binnington and then i said hey the matthews line
had it going but i but but yeah i mean we're gonna get to all that stuff i mean it's it's fine
i mean listen uh if you subscribe to that narrative
in overtime it was been there before versus hasn't right who had all the best chances
united states matthews has won playoff series uh one playoff series he's one and eight i believe
uh he had two or three and brady kachuk has never played a playoff game in his life
although it looks like he'll be a menace once they get in i mean we all knew that yeah he's
gonna be a problem we all knew that yeah like yeah the best thing what an animal the best thing
to come out of post game with brady kachuk was that graphic sports net threw up about how
no american had ever won a best on best i was playing on that team i don't know if you guys
saw that no american not one on that team has won a best on best whoa crider no well crider i uh he
got a gold medal at the world juniors i guess they're not counting no they're talking about
professionally men's not juniors best on best no player on the team usa roster has won wow that's
quite the stat and that's the sort of thing when you hear us complain about gary betman
and the nhl not allowing players to go to the olympics and to these tournaments that's what
we're talking about like we lost a whole generation a whole like what do you mean
what do you mean like it's not that they haven't won which they haven't but they haven't even had
the chance haven't even had the opportunity to succeed or fail right they haven't had the stage
it's it's monstrous it's unfair like look at the gift that this tournament was what do you mean
yeah so maddie you want to throw that out i think i think so what you were talking about of the like
the been there narratives with with team canada and jordan binnington specifically who won in that
building and that's a large reason that team can't have believed in him because he got it done
i feel like it did have an effect on the roster in these big moments where you're going against
a team that no player on the united states roster has ever won a best on best tournament
and on the other side you gotta look you gotta stare down sydney crosby in the face off dot
You've got to stare down Nathan McKinnon.
That was the funniest line of the tournament
because McKinnon would get kicked out of the face-off dot
and Sidney Crosby would go in.
Right, but Nathan McKinnon, who I don't believe has won a best-on-best,
but has a Stanley Cup.
Yes, Canada had a ton of cup wins.
McKinnon's not old enough to do the best-on-best,
but he has the cup.
The guys on the American side have cups too.
Not as many.
You're looking at Brad Marchand, who doesn't have as many cups,
but has the best on best experience and they brought drew dowdy and we all like okay drew
hasn't played but like he has the experience and i feel like the experience mattered yes how many
players on last night's team were on the 2010 team i think it's just crosby and dowdy's three
crosby dowdy and i gotta think about that why can't i think about that it's three
i don't know from the 2010 team yeah not marshan marshan was has to be marshan no not 2010
no he's not old enough he was a rookie when the bruins won the cup uh in 2011 i don't know he's
35 let's pull up the roster let's pull up the roster is it three crosby i can see 2014 being
free maybe i'm thinking of 2014 sochi probably maybe i'm probably i'm probably thinking of sochi
yeah yeah yeah even then i'm like yeah you're going you're going 20 20 yeah 2010 it's probably
just the two uh let's see like dowdy was an 08 draft pick playing at the 2010 olympics it was a
big deal dowdy is on the roster and crosby and that's it it's two psychotic yeah psychotic wow
how are they still here dowdy's played i think 14 minutes all season
like well sorry no steve that's 28 minutes all season no i know one game he played 28 minutes
like coming off a broken ankle yeah yeah unbelievable yep completely unbelievable
yep and i think i think that's you know what you saw yesterday and if we're going to talk about
about uh drew dowdy for a second i don't know how else to talk about like i don't know where else to
go with the bennington conversation no no i think it was great no i just say holy living fuck yeah
you were amazing no and and listen we're moving on i'm just letting the conversation progress but
i sure let's can you give me the third name who was uh sochi on sochi not marshand marshand
is not there he didn't really pop off until the world cup i remember him being on that top line
with sid we were all like brad really uh sorry you went like what brad no you can't do that
the voice is shot um uh jesse hit me it hit me man he didn't make it to the tournament
alex petrangelo oh that doesn't that's not fair i was gonna be like it can't be
he was named to the roster in december yeah didn't make it make it to the team though
unbelievable so what got me about dowdy was his play with thomas harley now thomas harley has
been bubbling under the surface for a long long time for his great play in Dallas but I think
because it's um at least on the eastern side of the hemisphere a lot of people don't stay up
late enough can't can't watch every Dallas game you know and and Thomas Harley with Drew Doughty
such an interesting pairing because you know we talked about and we'll talk about this later the
potential passing of the torch with with Sid and with Connor but I felt defensively like that was
hey thomas here's drew doughty yeah uh multiple time olympic champion uh and he's going to teach
you how to to carry that torch and you haven't been there he has and they were phenomenal they
were phenomenal smart plays uh harley uh running that sort of interference so nate could get the
lane and score that first goal like awesome awesome stuff uh i felt kind of bad for josh
morrissey not making it into that game i thought he'd had a really good tournament the states were
so violent and so physical uh you needed the size i think i think harley whether or not morrissey
was sick i think he still would have been the right call uh based on how he played yeah i mean
him and drew dowdy together were unbelievable morrissey must have been on death's door to yeah
to not to not play well so was kale mccarr obviously right yeah yeah right like well this
is the championship like to not be good to go for the championship is i mean you got to be dealing
with something look at matthew kachuk like he could yeah he wasn't on and i don't believe
morrissey was on the ice either so like even when uh because i travis connect me was remember brad
kind of scooted him over on his back to the thing oh like he didn't even accept the medal i don't
think so i didn't i don't i don't think i saw morrissey on that i'm not sure that and like
which means he was probably really sick is my point yeah oh wow he i mean maybe maybe he did
but i didn't know the thing i the the funniest grabbing the medal was people making fun of
Sam Montembeau for being the person in the
group project who did nothing.
Hell yeah.
Relatable.
Relatable. Hell yeah, Sam.
It's not even like he was the backup goalie. He was out there
in his suit, and he walks up, and he gets his medal.
Yeah.
He's a part of this, too.
I'm not going to... Listen, I disagreed
with some of the choices, but Sam,
you did your part. You're a good teammate.
You could have been the third goalie. I could have been.
I would have, and listen, gladly
would have accepted, call me, Doug Armstrong and
kyle dubas my favorite part of my 2010 uh canada team photo that i have in the blue room
is the jump scare i get every time i see marc andre flurry oh that's true and like a boneless
marc andre flurry because he's not wearing any equipment right he's just in a suit yeah it was
weird seeing boneless sam montembeau you're not supposed to see goalies bone no it's true it's
true they're a lot they inflate them a lot with those those pads on you know they do what do you
you're the size of a normal person it was like the picture of uh remember there was a two two
years ago in the 2023 playoffs and the panthers went on that run and they played that crazy game
into four overtimes or whatever it was and there there was that picture of sergey bobrovsky after
it and the guy is a twig like oh yeah it's just eight because he was just wiped like he probably
lost 10 pounds just playing that game and and modern goalies are shaped like slenderman as it
is yes that's yeah tough tough job some of the fun the funnest thing we do when we interview
athletes we get to talk to like some of the the junior kids and when we rarely talk to nhl players
on this show um is when we ask them what they eat because they lose so much weight and so much sweat
they just have to consume all of the carbs all the time and goalies especially like these guys
who are twigs and they lose everything off of their bodies playing one game and they have to
just consume everything back just to maintain that it's so interesting bennington's like that
yeah binnington's like i think the nhl probably leads all of sports in guys you'd see at the bar
and and like someone's like oh yeah that guy's a pro athlete yeah no way that guy is like
literally in elite um that guy has so many championships okay see that six foot seven
guy in the corner okay so he made him cry like no hockey is the king of the average dude but
he's a pro athlete yeah well like i don't know the problem with the bar is you got to wear pants
yeah but then yeah if you got to look at their thighs you're like oh no oh sorry i didn't notice
that your lower half is shaped like a rhinoceros i i didn't notice that um it's so silly i'm sorry
i'm on i'm trying to rise to the occasion here but i'm on fumes adam i'm on fumes yes adrenaline
keep this thing going i would like to you gotta give me direction all right all right well here's
one point me down here adam let's talk about group chat gate fucking right bagel now now
so let's jesse can you bring up the brandon hagel thing that i sent you it's it's a couple up there
um and uh so this is brandon hagel uh and the group chat is called champions and by the way
I thought the biggest flex was that there's an SC there for Sidney Crosby.
Oh, that's okay.
So who are the other ones?
JM, KK, BM, SR.
Connor McDavid, Brad Marchand.
Josh Morrissey, I think, is JM.
Okay.
What are we missing now?
SR.
SR.
Could it be a coach?
Could it be...
Seth Rarvis.
Seth Rarvis.
Who's the really tiny one in the top right?
it's dd i think co no co no dd you're right you're right do our dd sorry drew dowdy drew
dowdy yeah there you go and what else are we doing uh bottom right is mm mitch marner okay
cm connor mcdavid yeah s who's sr i don't know and ms i want to say kk is travis connecting
because i feel like that's his nickname okay i'm not totally sure ms would be
you're gonna ms i mean we're not looking at the roster so um yeah we're trying to do this off top
of our head yeah that's the game uh much much um salutations to the trophy because they won
i don't fuck anyway so let's talk so so then then we got i don't know we got uh don't yell at me
um got brad marchand and i hey listen to say we got brad marchand as a leaf fan is
it's cool um and i want to i want to play this clip jesse i'm going to send it over to you he
had a good game that was his best game he had a great game um i want to play this clip because
group chat gate if you don't know uh started with the last canada united states game which feels
like several months ago but it was saturday night last week and it it had to do with the fact that
there were three fights in nine seconds and the kachuks and jt miller had a group chat and they
said we're gonna fight we're all gonna fight tonight let's go and uh and then they made a
comment after the game like maybe those guys don't have group chats because they don't like each
other no it was because brandon hagel was like i i did that for the flag right we don't have group
chats or whatever matthew kachuk is like well maybe those guys don't like each other right
sam reinhardt sam ryan oh dummies okay all right what else did we miss uh ms yeah mms kk i just
guessed let's let's check that out okay it's not gravis connect me mark stone oh all right all
right all right so um there's probably people just screaming at the car radios right now i felt bad
That's what I wanted to finish.
Brad Marchand, let's have a look at this clip, Jesse,
because that Kachuk brothers group chat became kind of infamous.
Here we go.
Sometimes when you shoot your mouth off in the media,
it bites you.
You know, you can do that during the season,
but when you're playing best on best, it's different.
You know, and they got a little bit ahead of themselves,
but they're great players.
And there's not many guys in the league that play the way they do.
and they're extremely effective but you know when you start giving teams ammo
um you know it can work against you as well so uh you know they're they're gonna have long
breakthrough years um and i think you saw how effective they can be at every level they do
in the regular season they did in this tournament and they're competitors they're a big reason why
I think that team is what they're up to.
The key, though, is sometimes you shoot your mouth off in the media
and it comes back to bite you.
And he wrapped it in a compliment, too.
Yeah.
A compliment sandwich.
Yes.
Smelly dog farts.
You shouldn't have talked about the group chat.
And what I love about having Brad Marsh in is nobody's better at chirping
than this guy.
And he did it in an older, elder statesman kind of way.
Turning the knife.
okay tell me give it well that's his parting shot um listen next year at the olympics
i don't know if he's gonna be there um he's getting up there he's gonna turn 37
in may wow how is it possible he's we're the we're the same age
kills me but we're the same age he's getting up there and he's not where crosby is
crosby's even older and even he you can start to see it's just flickering the power's flickering
just just a little the brilliance is still there but it's it's getting harder to muster and also
So he's playing hurt,
but that comes with getting older.
And I think Marshan's final parting gift,
his final legacy with hockey Canada.
If this is it for him,
is that little turn of the knife for the Americans.
He always,
whenever the Leafs lose to the Bruins and it's happened a lot.
I don't know if you're new here.
He always has some sort of comment after the game where he like compliments.
That's a good team over there.
But this says something where you're like, I want to reach through the camera and smack them.
He never just goes, those guys suck.
No, it's always some sort of really, you're like, you know, it's the Ron Burgundy.
I hate you, but I respect you.
And it was so great to have him for that because guys like that who do have big mouths are kind of rare in the sport, or at least were up until this point.
And a lot of the Canadian guys are kind of like Sid and Connor.
just really sort of humble and focused and quiet and we needed a mouth i think i think you gotta
have him there next year in a fourth line role yeah i would not there's not many people on planet
earth i would rather have on my team than brad marsh and i don't think he'd look out of place
if if he can just muster up he played 12 minutes last night that's fine i think it was the least
amongst forwards on team canada so that tracks if he can do that for for seven games or whatever
the olympics will be i'm perfectly fine with that if he still has it in him because that x factor
that he brings there where the the kachuks were if now that we have some hindsight and we know who
won this thing they were extremely arrogant coming out of that saturday win and brad marsh and the
elder statesman's on team canada they have the mentality of jobs not done we know that is the
round robin we know they're talking their shit but we still have till thursday to get this thing
done and they're bragging about the group tracks bragging about the fights and he knows we can end
all of that talk by winning this game and you can i think you can tell that a voice like that is
important yes yes and even if he's a healthy scratch for the olympics as long as he's there
on the roster i feel like it's important and i'm so happy that we have brad marchand to shut down
look at chuck brothers well like uh counterpoint to what i said about him not making it uh travis
connect me is gonna score 35 40 goals this year he was a healthy scratch he didn't play yeah
brad marchand did yeah um so i think uh rumors of his uh death on team canada are greatly
exaggerated by me yeah you you worry about yeah team canada going into the next olympics
and looking like the team that gives all the old guys
one last kick at the camp.
They're 2006.
I would worry a lot about recreating that 2006 team.
But I think there's enough young stars on Canada
with McDavid and McKinnon and Marner and Konechny
and all those guys that they can hold up
if we have one.
We have Crosby there who's going to be there
and we have Marchand.
I don't know if Drew Doughty is going to make it next Olympics.
There's a different conversation.
That's tough.
But if he's the seventh D, I think we can live with that.
Oh, my God, it's true.
Dowdy's the seventh D.
We're good.
We're okay.
Exactly.
Like, you think about Petro on the team.
You think about the guys.
Shane Theodore healthy.
Theodore, who wasn't there.
It definitely squeezes out Dowdy.
But even if he's the seventh D.
I think it squeezes out Sanheim for sure.
Yeah.
Like, let's be honest.
The third pairing for Team Canada's defense was drowning out there.
Like, that was not a great game.
There were times.
You know, and I think, Jesse, you're right.
You're not calling Harley-Dowdy pair.
You're calling them pair two.
I would.
Well, maybe they were pair three, but they played like pair two.
They were pair three on the lineup chart.
The minutes were.
I have it right here.
The minutes for.
That's what you go by.
Yeah.
So, Sanheim played 18.
Dowdy played 20.
Harley played 21.
Yeah, he's going.
pareko played 17 so yeah kale mccarr played 28 holy shit davante's too cable car didn't leave
the ice davante's 27 minutes every time the puck was active and live kale mccarr was on the eye i
can't properly explain to you how little my wife gives a shit and after the game she was like who
is kale mccarr who does he play for he's crazy and i was like uh so that's the best defenseman
in the world yeah um he plays for colorado my wife fell in love with nathan mckinnon she was
like who the hell is this guy like as in like she knows she knows who nathan mckinnon is but
you know it's not like she's going out of her way as you know someone who's not in sports media
uh to watch colorado avalanche games and he was he was and i i know we're gonna get to sit we're
gonna get to connor we cannot cannot cannot talk about this team without talking about nathan
mckinnon's contribution to it he was the tournament mvp for canada what do you think about that
i think i drew one 250 bucks i know it's crazy and and it's funny because versus team usa i
objectively thought he wasn't great they weren't getting much out of him really really yeah he got
a lot of shots but that line they they were not getting a lot out of them early i wasn't crazy
about it but i thought last night i mean i've been loving him i loved him versus sweden i loved
versus Finland I liked him in the back half of the United States game uh the Saturday one last night
you saw why the Colorado Avalanche won the cup in 2022 and it makes me sad a little bit and I can
understand Drew a little bit more now on just the effect of not having Mikko Rantanen because the
tournament Rantanen had he was unbelievable for Finland yeah Makar Rantanen and McKinnon all
played on the same team what do you mean you traded him oh this tournament all things healthy
should have been uh mckinnon uh ranton leckanen would have been there or was there rather uh
landis cog would have been there devon taves kale mccarr just uh just the monsters that's more than
a full line and a top pair it's crazy holy shit what a team and you could argue like kemper should
have been there for canada he was their goalie yeah dude yeah it was a crazy team um it was a
crazy team so yeah nathan mckinnon do you guys think he's the tournament mvp in your mind is
that the guy you give it to yeah yeah yeah he i don't think he had the most points but i do think
he had the most goals um he certainly had the most shots and i love that about him yeah please
please learn from him he is he was the most recognizable person on the ice the states played
such a good defensive game they did and what it took sometimes you know while everyone else is
playing uh methodical disciplined okay we're gonna solve the united states defensively we're gonna
solve them every now and then players would go all right here we go it's time for me to be me
connor did it a couple times yeah last night and the states did an unreal job of locking him down
and making sure he doesn't get that full head of steam.
But the few times he did in that game,
you see how just unstoppable of a force he is.
McKinnon did that too.
And McKinnon and Crosby, sorry, not Crosby, McDavid,
they're both so skilled with their hands at top speed.
It's just different.
McDavid will slice through you like butter.
I think McKinnon will carve you up.
and go around you right like just that cut to the middle also just seems very difficult to
knock off any puck ever well he's huge yeah he's huge um trains boxing um he's uh chickpea pasta
chickpea pasta he's a big fella he's a big fella and he's lean sometimes life throws your curve
balls and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you
should check this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my

I saw a little criticism of McDavid's game and him not dominating the way he does in regular season hockey.
And I thought a lot of that had to do with the game that he's playing, which is against all of the top players in the entire league.
And Connor McDavid's game is all speed.
and the u.s did a great job on saturday taking away the areas that mcdavid usually dominates and
they did it again yesterday you know he can't dominate when every single line he goes up against
is a first line in the nhl yeah he's he's going to be a little lesser than he usually is mcjesus
but still at moments last night there's one play where he took an end to end where he came up around
the back of his own net and he went all the way to the other end several times he's still able
to show that level of skill it's just not going to be at the high level in consistency that he has
all through the regular season but mcdavid was still great and nathan mckinnon yeah he was he
was definitely the star there um you're asking about the points and the goals he had four goals
no assists uh which is the tied with a bunch of guys for third in the tournament zach warrensky
actually led the tournament in points wow it's six assists are you serious wow yeah for him
zach warrensky six assists in four games plus three led the tournament conor mcdavid had five
points three goals to assist sydney crosby had one goal four assists five points and then nathan
mckinnon and a whole bunch of others come in third i guess fourth kind of with uh four points so
there you go wow you know the uh the mckinnon play uh was outstanding and and and you know what
what really kind of blew me away you have to contextualize this cj put it in our group chat
and he said you have to remember that like these guys are all like first liners everywhere else
and so so when you see a connor mcdavid take off and slice through maybe he doesn't do it
six times a game like he does in the nhl maybe he only gets three it's because the level of play is
so good and that's what i was trying to articulate yeah so i'm just saying it my own way i guess and
and and what i think was awesome was the fact that there was adversity and he admitted that
Connor said after the game that there was a that he didn't think he started well well he didn't
honestly um and I'm I'm trying what I was doing on my phone just now I'm trying to find the name
of the reporter uh I'm not sharp this morning and I forget but there was a reporter for TSN
who was heavily criticized because after Sidney Crosby scored the golden goal for Canada in 2010
he asked him a question post game i think he got two questions with him and he posed the question
with you didn't have a great tournament and people got all over this poor guy because
no one wanted to hear that shit time and place he was not wrong time and he was not wrong yeah
time and place and and like i'm old enough to remember like i was there on the ground i went
to every single game except one for the Canadian men's team Crosby was heavily criticized his best
moment heading into the gold medal game if I'm not mistaken he scored the shootout winner against
Switzerland in the round robin I don't remember how many goals or assists he had his line was
struggling to get going Babcock put together this Crosby again the Nash Franken line we can
score but we also sort of shut down and they were trying to find a purpose but it's about
you know it's 15 years in the past now no one remembers that yep and if they do remember no
one cares yeah um it's all about how you end it uh mitch marner he had a heavily criticized
tournament so you were trying to find that reporter's name so you could dunk on them 15
years later no i was trying to i was trying to go here no let me research them so i can call up
their bad question no no i was trying to and i'll tell you i was trying to find their name because
i actually met them that summer oh no way he called them an idiot no no and you're like hey
no moron they were doing their job no no they were trying to paint a picture of you did you
just had one of the like a top three moment in canadian hockey history
uh despite the two weeks of criticism you've just taken
how does that feel i don't remember the exact question but i i someone introduced me to him
and i part of the reason i don't remember this is i was drunk because it was george street
in newfoundland uh because team canada had their um their world junior camp in newfoundland that
summer in 2010 and i don't even think he asked me my name like it was just like hey steve here he is
and i don't even think he asked me my name he goes what did you think of that question i asked
oh yeah no really and like and like honestly honestly like people shit on him um but it was
it was uh he the part of why that moment was so beautiful there were so many reasons why that
moment was which one the crosby one the crosby yeah there were so many reasons why that moment
was beautiful and that was part of it part of it was this idiot he no part of it was he didn't have
a great tournament oh right oh yeah yeah right you suck jesse part of it was he didn't have a
great tournament and the parallels crosby in 2010 and mcdavid yeah in 2025 here at the four nation
faceoff are are noticeable man they're like mcdavid was i mean fuck his goal against the
u.s in the round rob was unbelievable yep but you lose and no one remembers or cares
yep and there's another example of like to the victor go the spoils absolutely no one remembers
or cares um it was his best moment of the tournament before and uh or heading into this
game anyway and no one remembered or cared and then here he is in in in uh the gold medal game
here and no reporter had to say it mcdavid said it himself i was not good i was not up to my i
mean he was good he wasn't up to mcdavid and i think that's fine when an entire team of superstars
on the other end of the ice know that one guy is better than everybody out here nathan mckinnon
said it himself when they asked him who's the best player like it's really great competing
with everybody it's like do you guys know conor mcdavid is here too like he's the best and every
when you have a team of superstars they know they have to go at conor mcdavid he got shut down a
little and he wasn't good up until that goal on thursday and who cares and if you did it that's
the moment you that's why you have conor mcdavid is to score that goal and he did it if you're the
United States you got to try to score and you got to try to defend and it's really difficult to do
both things at once so if you're putting your best defensive resources towards shutting someone down
and you're the home team and you have you have yes that was that was such a key to last night
that I don't think a lot of people realize because Canada was second in the table in the round robin
they were not the home team for the championship and the Americans could line match every single
timeout and they made it really difficult they had two guys all over mcdavid all night and you
know the the the questionable icing calls that people were mad about the uh potential too many
men on the ice call that that wasn't called against refereeing wasn't great this tournament
wow whole they called it like a game seven yeah right which is don't call anything don't call
anything unless it's like the most egregious obvious trip ever which trochex was and it
ended up not biting them so whatever water under the bridge but the sheer amount of interference
connor mcdavid had to deal with like i've watched a lot of mcdavid games and i've gotten to see it
and and and i've streamed a lot of his games in the playoffs and i've talked about if you called
mcdavid games honestly he would draw four or five penalties a game uh holy shit like just i watched
it through a whole different lens um he hasn't played a normal hockey game uh like if if hockey
games were called the way they ought to be called he might have 250 penalty or sorry uh um uh 250
points a season yeah yep he might break all the gretzky's records by 20 because they would just
live on the power play they would just yes they wouldn't play a moment five on five right right
i wouldn't even pay a goalie i think i'd just have an empty net the whole time play six on
four the whole game who gives a shit like i don't remember where i was going with that again
no his bad tournament he has three goals to assist you know a game winner well championship
winner like that's bad for conor mcdavid heavy is the crown yeah right like now do you agree
Did Crosby actually have a bad tournament in 2010 leading up to the gold medal?
Or were the expectations just through the roof?
And was he a rookie?
Like young at that tournament, right?
He was pretty young.
Crosby was in his...
Early 20s?
Fifth season?
Okay, so not young.
Not fifth season.
Just coming off of winning a cup, I believe.
And going to back-to-back finals.
He was the youngest captain to ever win the cup at the time, I'm pretty sure.
One guy that I think...
So I just want to quickly wrap on the McDavid-Crosby thing.
I thought McDavid's comments about,
hey do you think that you know the the crosby torch has been passed to you and he said well
sid's gonna be here in milan so i don't think so um and and you know steve's gonna remember
that question for 15 years and then bring up that reporter and be like you know some idiot
asked mcdavid and then not even name him because i'm an asshole oh that's funny um some some guy
that some guy that's not getting the credit he deserves um is a guy that that is as a
Leaf fan, you must hate this man until he plays for your team
and he does well.
And his name is Sam Bennett.
Oh, yeah.
Sam Bennett.
What a goal.
Here are the stats.
So the goal was great.
Yeah.
And we'll talk about the guy that set that up in a bit.
So hold off on that if you can.
Ooh.
Sam Bennett, one goal, six shots.
He led all skaters.
Yeah.
Eight shot attempts.
Wow.
Four high danger.
So leads all skaters.
And six hits the entire game.
And he led all skaters in that, too.
What a factor.
a real factor and you know he's not had the best regular season in florida up and down yeah well
yeah i mean i think it's not by his standards especially in a free agent year i don't think
that uh that he's had the year that he maybe wanted to have thus far but like whatever it
was that you thought you were seeing from sam reinhardt in florida what you saw at this
tournament is what you're paying for if you buy him in reinhardt or bennett sorry bennett bennett
excuse me i got mixed up the florida sams yeah the florida sams whatever you thought you saw
from Bennett in the regular season in Florida uh you're paying for what you got in this tournament
and what he will bring in the playoffs 100 like uh you know this is I think you know we we talked
about team Canada having a lot of this team picked before the season began and we viewed it as a bad
thing and you should ride the hot hand etc etc there's merit to evaluating how players do in
the playoffs oh yeah yeah uh because the games that we saw in october november december were
not the intensity even close to the intensity of these games and that's part of where the
experience comes from like brady kachuk like we know he's built for this but the best he can do
is guess until he actually gets here right the the best anyone can do is guess until they actually
get here um so Bennett time and time and time again back-to-back Stanley Cup finals they just
won man they showed a highlight uh because Bennett was on the same line as Marchand I forgot
that Bennett skating full speed superman punched Brad Marchand right in the friggin face
last playoffs i'm pretty sure no call i don't think brad was the same after that too i think
he was hurt yeah no shit he had a concussion like he got punched in the head yeah like but
they're on the same team now they're on the same team now and like bennett sometimes the same line
yeah bennett most of the time like bennett is that animal um you know speaking of uh you know
there's there's guys like mcdavid who the rule book uh spits in his face and then there's guys
like sam bennett who are making uh quite the handsome living off of um refs tucking their
whistles in their pocket oh yeah he's gonna retire like at just the right time too like he's like he
is 10 11 years since he was drafted rules will probably tighten up right around yeah i'm gonna
hang up my skates i'm gonna take like probably a hundred mil to the bank yeah that's a good life
that's a pretty good life uh i want to jesse bring four nations i sent you a picture a little
a little bit ago jesse can you bring it up okay uh also just one note on sam bennett uh another
calgary product i calgary flames i think of matthew kachuk leaving there i think of sam
bennett and with sam bennett when sam bennett was playing there jesse he was on the fourth line
They're real good at not keeping guys who are absolute animals.
What a shame.
Here's, I think we should scrap the NHL draft combine.
Do you guys remember, we covered this on the show.
It was very, very early on the show.
Do you remember the story about Sam Bennett that came out from the draft combine?
I don't remember it.
No, not at all.
He couldn't do a pull-up.
that's what we were talking about neither could brady yeah i don't know if that if that matters
to being good at hockey well you know it's funny the old the old guys at the time were like wow
this guy's whatever and i remember there being a bit of a debate now that you mentioned it about
like who can't oh okay well people were just like who cares like can he can he play hockey right
that's what i'm saying he had a shoulder injury why are they making him do a pull-up he's got a
shoulder and that was such a weird draft too because like he went fourth he could have gone
first. It was
Ekblad Reinhardt
dry sidle.
Wow. Who might have been underrated.
Slightly. Just a smidge.
And then I wonder how many pull-ups he did.
And Sam Bennett.
Man, I
for so many years
to start his career, I think we were looking for all the
wrong things. Yeah, I agree.
Now, Jesse, can we throw this picture up on the
screen? Look at that. Oh, that's hard.
Mitch Marner, Austin Matthews,
in the handshake line uh these guys are buddies at home uh line mates at home and one of them
what looks pissed well i don't think austin's thrilled i mean i don't blame him well i mean
would you be happy austin was a hair from doing to mitch what mitch did to him oh yeah taking the
puck off him and ending the thing it was going to happen because of one of them both of them
primary assists didn't it feel like it dude there's four points from a five goal championship
game in that photo they both had spectacular nights and one of them is being talked about
like he fucking stinks at hockey today well and warren sapp of all people uh nfl great
uh called out austin matthews that wasn't warren sapp oh wasn't actually no no that's warren sharp
award sharp okay different guy football analyst ah different well i got the sport right yeah he's
and i got the first name right um sorry i okay listen there was a lot of stuff to collect and
i'm i'm tired uh but marner and matthews uh had great games last night and we are i promise you
if you if you're an american and you're tuning into this we are going to talk team usa as well
um we're going to talk about how they lost we well i feel like that's that needs to be the
highlight but also um the matthews set up with brady kachuk and what i loved about that that
was the that was the state's tying goal in the first period yeah what i loved about that is
kachuk is in tight matthews is in tight what are they doing causing chaos in front of the
goaltender what do we ask the leafs to do cause chaos go to the net exactly matthews had an
unbelievable game he did from start to finish he was really great and yeah i think he had a really
good tournament i think they unlocked something when he was playing with hughes early on and then
this game they switched up the lines a little and even then he was dominant and over time like if
it's not for binnington standing on his head and making a couple amazing glove saves like he has a
couple more and he hit a couple posts very early on the first two games like i got one too matthews
had a good tournament yes he did who who was the uh the u.s's best forward in this tournament
because for me it comes down to matthews larkin was very very eichel has to be in that conversation
because of what he does defensively and offensive i think a better question is what american had a
bad tournament uh chris crider oh he scored a goal he did score a goal and a good one like
early in his first game like they were adam fox didn't know i don't think yeah adam fox
like are you sure but we're not doing we're not doing usa no no no no i'm talking mitch and
austin yeah well sorry the reason i asked that question is because like i i know i'm a leaf fan
i know i i know i have my biases like i thought he was top three are we not feeling matthews yeah
are we not feeling though that the the these guys these two specifically because willie has never
been really in the conversation with people who have a brain of of clutch performances willie did
at the world championships when he ran over Henrik Lundqvist remember that he was great on that team
um he was he's been great in the playoffs and if you look at Willie's point spread and goals scored
right they're all about even the three of them in terms of points scored but Willie scores
consistently whereas what we've seen from from Mitch and Austin a little bit is is is in bunches
oh they got five points in one game but that was zeros for the rest of the the the thing or whatever
and I'm I'm generalizing but you understand the point and I think when you look at um how they
performed here we all wanted to see can these guys do it in a big game because that's been the
knock and rightfully so they're one for eight in playoff series right yeah like this didn't fall
out of the sky so um like I I got a can I read a text I got yeah about the final goal yeah um
uh this is rachel dory i'm seeing many people criticize matthews on the ot winner and frankly
he's actually the third guy to blame not first fox took a bad path he needed to go around the
left side of the net maybe maybe you can bring the goal up on the thing um sure the what's it
called the screen you know what i'm talking about that's not what i meant i meant you know the name
of the thing on the website edge there it is yeah yeah or we can do like stop and stop on the actual
video whichever one you want no no no let's let's use the edge thing okay fox took a bad path he
needed to go around the left side of the net to catch the rim he didn't and because he also took
a bad path he couldn't get to marner based on the heinz defensive system this is john heinz
the center is supposed to rotate to the corner player and the high winger Hughes that's Jack
Hughes is supposed to slide down to where McDavid is so on fault it's Fox Hughes then Matthews
most people wouldn't know the Heinz defensive system but I worked for him so I thought I'd
give you that insight which is excellent insight to have so if you can press play I'll read it
while you're playing it Fox took a bad path he needed to go around the left side of the net to
catch the rim he didn't and because he also took a bad path he couldn't get to Marner based on the
Hines defensive system the C is supposed to rotate the corner player and the high winger
Hughes is supposed to slide down to where McDavid is so like what what I mean the visual for Matthews
is horrendous like he's on mcdavid and then leaves him right but no look right there no one has marner
so mcdavid you're choosing between mcdavid and marner at that point marner is wide open mcdavid
is wide open now you probably leave marner wide open he's oh he's not he can't shoot from where
he is he's yeah he's along that it'd be a miracle if that shot went in on connor hellebuck from that
angle um he's somewhere between the half wall and the corner um it's not going in yeah so right now
uh you can't see but behind 21 there's 23 which is adam fox so she was saying earlier so adam fox
is over there right off um he's supposed to come around the left side to get that puck and
everything's kind of clear there um if that's so he goes around see he goes around the right
And Makar reads it perfectly.
He should have gone around the left side,
and he probably is on Marner, gets that puck.
It's a little less of an open play there.
Can you show off the face-off again?
Because I almost wonder if...
I know McDavid shoots it right off the face-off.
Based on the way the play broke down,
you almost wonder if he missed on purpose.
No, I think it hits someone in front, right?
Hannafin, I believe.
Yeah, 15.
I don't know if he missed on purpose.
I think it's just puck goes off the body,
he goes into the corner everyone like look how fast macar reads that look how fast he rips around
to marner no one's there everyone's open everyone is open here marner's open taves is open mcdavid's
open uh i don't who's 29 brock nelson is forced to leave macar everyone just panics and goes oh
shit. It's
just Brayden Point, who's the only
one who's covered by Hannafin.
Look at all the numbers coming out.
I've been in a game.
Look at everybody out on the ice.
There's Crosby!
87!
All the numbers coming out is amazing.
Let's go!
And Dowdy going to Binnington
right away. You see all the guys hug?
That's hilarious. Look at them hugging.
Yeah.
So there's, I mean,
it's rare you get to blame it on one guy
I wish they kept
going with that
I just want to keep watching this
just show the whole ceremony
right off the face off
it's one of those things that
we have been waiting for these
two guys in Leaf
uniforms to do it and now
the question is not
can they we've seen it
they came up both very big
for their teams in a big game
now it's about can you um can you do it with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the seeming curse
that we have hanging over us and I think once you've done it you've done it and then you know
you can do it but I feel like being in this tournament especially for those guys like the
talent that both of them were around and I think you look at Marner man like look at the legends
he is playing with right the u.s team's younger like matthews is the core of that team right
along with the kachuks and whatever there isn't like they're all in the sweet spot yeah they are
they don't have the crosby dowdy can i yeah marshand you know you don't have that there
on team iosa and i wonder for a guy like mitch if he goes okay there's just that little bit of
extra now i know stuff that you bring back who in this tournament has more aura than sydney crosby
nobody nobody in hockey nobody having that on your team has got to be the most surreal
friggin thing ever and and mitch mitch was set up to score an overtime goal by him in the first game
set up the overtime winner in the last game i i know a lot listen a lot of toronto media got on
mitch and i i really want to say that i really respected the way that you handled it on wednesday
and said, I don't know what game you're watching.
It's a four-game tournament, right?
Well, and heading into that, he had only played three games.
Scored the OT winner and won.
The game against the Americans,
I didn't look at it as Mitch being bad.
I looked at it as the line didn't work.
They then go to Sorelli, Marner, Sorelli, Hagel.
And what was funny is what ended up, you know,
icing the tournament is they basically went back to what they had in game one except instead of
Sam Reinhardt it was Braden Point which speed wise is probably a it's probably a better fit
um Marner I always thought like Rick Nash had to become a defensive player in 2010 I always go back
to Rick Nash the guy won the rock of a shard we know what he can do every player at this tournament
can score all of them you don't need to lean on mitch for the offensive load in this tournament
you don't have to um so don't have them on a shutdown ish four check ish sorelli hagel
exhausting water bug kind of third line which is what i wanted from the moment the tournament began
um but last night was a reminder no i can kind of do that scoring thing too uh i want can i just say
that i think like this is a large reason that people hate the toronto media and like how dare
you try and create this narrative around mitch marner for clicks in this four-game tournament
where he scored the ot winner and won he was like okay man and against usa but like there's a 12
other forward or 11 other forwards on the ice the the load one goal the load of winning the game
and losing the game wasn't on Mitch Marner,
you're using this man because he's a lightning rod
in our fan base for clicks these couple days
because there's no other hockey
and you have to create this narrative around
he sucks in this sample size
where he sets up the championship winner
and he scores another one in OT.
Like, that sucks.
Like, if that's what you pushed
the last four days of this tournament
on whatever show you're doing
or whatever podcast or radio thing,
like, how dare you?
Like, you're awful.
like this isn't that's lazy this isn't i agree i agree man like this isn't the leafs like there's
no salary cap um there's no uh like league men shut down fourth line penalty kill grinder guys
this is a best on best tournament um anyone anyone can take over a game travis connecting
was a healthy scratch in this game you could have put him on the first line he wouldn't have
looked at a place in the slightest no you know kyle connor man kyle whole kyle holy shitting
gonnor did not play in this game he got healthied uh by the way any further proof that matthew
kachuk was the captain they listen i know if he says he can go you gotta let him you shouldn't
to let him well jesse you guys you guys had this conversation earlier we already did this
so you're you're sick you're saying i don't jesse's i'm gonna be totally honest
i don't remember that that's okay my brain is happy like you you thought like oh we did we do
this thing yet because you brought it up and it was like no we did that i am delirious that's all
good buddy don't worry about it the the last thing on the marner thing the the way they spun the
narrative where because he didn't have a good game two when he was like okay in game three that
means the leafs are gonna lose in the playoffs yeah which i mean i'm gonna come on here i'm
gonna say you know what these playoffs this year it's done you might as well let him walk to free
agency mitch marner didn't show up against usa on saturday in the round robin that means the
Police are going to lose in four to the Bruins again.
Click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
On your fucking website.
Like, shut up.
I don't think that works.
Shut up.
People can see through it now.
I also want to say that, like, listen, we've shared our fair share of criticism of those two players.
When it's warranted.
Right.
And it wasn't warranted this weekend.
No, I agree.
I agree.
Sorry, like, you watch nine playoff series over the better part of a decade.
I think you have enough of a body of work where you can go,
yeah, all right, I don't know if four guys making a billion dollars
or whatever works.
This tournament's not that.
It's not even sort of that.
And the lack of games in this tournament,
like just how precious every game was,
nothing exemplified that more than Mitch Marner being like a national hero
for exactly 10, 15 minutes
and then immediately going back to a hunk of shit
after scoring against Sweden.
And it really...
You could have had a two-nation face-off.
No disrespect to Sweden or Finland.
You could have had a best two out of three
Canada-US tournament.
And it might have done better.
No.
What are you talking about?
The reason I say that, the reason I say that...
You're straying a little.
No, no, I know, I know, but, like, forgive me.
We're talking about Marner.
No, no, no, no, no.
Oh, because of Marner.
But he scored against overtime,
and I do think there was some kind of sentiment out there
with some, eh, it was against Sweden.
We don't hate them as much as the other guys.
The game we really want to win,
it's game two against the States,
and then they lost, and everyone was grumpy about it.
The mood in Vancouver, I keep going back to 2010,
but again it was there was miserable miserable when canada lost that round robin game to the
states and something happened i can't remember what it was that turned the tide and it wasn't
a hockey game someone won a gold medal in another sport it might have been alexandra bilodeau
in the moguls something but it was like it was like 24 48 hours where the entire city of vancouver
had a dark cloud over it and it was unseasonably clear and sunny and warm
uh everyone was pissed after that loss to the states that rivalry is something else
and it means something to win against them and it means something to lose against them and i think
part of what poisoned the narrative there
with Marner and with
the team and with Bennington.
Yeah, yeah. Soft goal. You know, we're guilty
of it too.
Except, I mean, I think the soft goal was soft.
I don't think Marner was bad
ever in the tournament.
I think part of what poisoned
it was people couldn't stomach
losing to the U.S.
I think the point there is the criticism
that we lay on the players of
Toronto Maple Leafs comes from a
point of hey this is what happened and this is the criticism and it's warranted based on their play
it was not warranted this past weekend it had nothing to do with the core four had nothing
to do with the least winning or winning or losing adam i think you were gonna say something i think
well i just think listen if they were gonna probably did if they if they play like that
uh i'm pretty excited about the leafs playoff run i am it'll be great i'm really pumped like i i
don't know man like i you had your two best players on the team in the finals and they both
showed up and both had multiple points one of them could have ended the game multiple times if not
for an ungodly crazy couple of saves from the goaltender the other one set up the best player
in the world perfectly beautiful pass like like i know david wired home but like his pass to sam
bennett perfection his pass to mcdavid perfection and he did it in overtime a goal in the first
overtime an assist in the last overtime primary assist for both of them I I think if you're a
Leaf fan you got to be jacked and listen uh there have been a couple there have been reports out
there that a couple of guys have said to their teams hey um I'm playing in this game but when
I come back I'm gonna need a bit of a break and NHL team's getting grumpy about it I give Matthews
and Marner the weekend off are the Leafs you don't need to play this weekend I don't the Leafs have
a back-to-back yeah they play carolina tomorrow yep how yep carolina tomorrow and chicago the
no and then travel oh so wait it's it's carolina in toronto then they fly to chicago yeah so you
play carolina saturday night you you leave that night you arrive in carolina you get some sleep
then you play chicago in chicago uh that's brutal i'd like neilander to play he's had a few more
days yeah there's gotta be out there he's practicing matthews hey that's hey hey alex
thieves come on up martyr was uh nursing an injury heading into the break and matthews uh
nursed an injury during the tournament a game yeah yeah missed and played like that either of
them you know what i was gonna say carolina you're right they shouldn't play either game this weekend
no that's yeah don't play oh sorry i was out of that it's okay you don't need it we know you're
tired this it was a lot easily a three coffee day a hundred percent and that's fine i don't need i
don't need it doesn't matter i don't know man are you coming to hockey i i really want to you better
we're gonna recreate marner mcdavid there you go yo can you pick me up i yeah oh that's awesome
hey guys i want to tell you again about carly's angels it's a gala i am hosting
for the carly's angels foundation and they basically the aim is to provide access to
integrative care for all patients so that's why they've partnered with the sick kids uh sick kids
hospital where i used to work uh and princess margaret cancer center yeah you didn't know that
i used to work at sick kids hospital we're doing an ad maddie we're in the middle of an ad read
maddie stop yelling i mean we can tell the story what was your position what did you do there i
doctor i was yeah i was a i was a clerk i was a uh i booked people uh i booked kids for x-rays
what uh so any from any good guy uh good guy it was a honestly you just had to mention that it
was the greatest part-time job i ever had it was outstanding it was amazing and the only reason i
quit was because i got a job on the radio what if shopper's drug mart is listening what shopper's
drug mart oh yeah i used to work there too with drake uh not with no we were co-workers just
different stores don't don't let people think that's true carly's angels carly's angels uh so
listen, Carly, as I've told you before, was a teenager when she was diagnosed with a really
rare form of cancer. And even though she eventually succumbed to it, her fight was what was so
inspirational. Uh, this is a young woman who was a brilliant figure skater. Uh, she was a light in
her community. Her family is really close and that's why they started the foundation in her
honor. Actually, if you look it up, Carly got to sing the national anthem at the Leafs game too,
which was really, really cool. There's been a movie made about her. Uh, so I get to be the MC
and this is a it's a really spectacular cause and it's really close to my heart and and i hope
uh that you can either donate or be there it's carly's angels c-a-r-l-e-y-s angels.ca
slash legacy dash gala so again carly's angels.ca slash legacy dash gala um it's uh march 1st so
it's coming up real soon very soon uh but hopefully we get to see you there okay so um i i do want to
let you know that matthew nye said he had a few bets in the leafs dressing room craig berube said
i got some money from nizey he hasn't paid me yet it'll be more tomorrow
and and and so let's talk about the states though for a second because i i think
you know as much as there's joy and jubilation and the country needed a win in canada in the
united states uh i don't want to talk about how it made headline news we'll talk about that later
I want to talk about the actual team for a second.
That team.
Which one?
The United States team.
The United States team.
Is phenomenal.
Jacob Slavin is phenomenal.
Holy shit.
Phenomenal.
MVP of the tournament.
He was.
I couldn't.
I was like, oh, yeah, I forgot.
This guy.
There was years, like five years ago, we were like, when's that guy going to get some Norris votes?
And then he kind of, again, I don't know why.
It's because Carolina plays such a strong defensive system.
you kind of if you're not watching hurricanes gains all the time this man does not get the
credit for how freaking good he is that unreal they are far and away the early favorites
to have the best decor at the 2026 olympics yeah they didn't have mcavoy they didn't have
Quinn Hughes. Jacob
Slavin was an actual
rabid animal.
Zach Wierenski led the
tournament in points with six.
Jake Sanderson
scored in the championship
game. Unreal. He was great.
Adam Fox didn't show up.
Adam Fox wasn't great.
And Noah Hannafin, I thought, was
steady as they come. Do you know who
led all Team
USA players in ice time? I'm going to say
Jacob Slavin.
Wierenski.
Brock Faber.
Oh, he was good, too.
Wow.
He was good, too.
He didn't even make your list.
No, he didn't.
I was like, I know I forgot someone.
Oh, yeah, with his glasses.
He's so cute.
I also want to shout out Dylan Larkin.
I thought...
Animal.
Man, Animal.
And what a...
It's criminal that Detroit does not make the playoffs, man.
He would be a rabid dog in the playoffs.
They would have.
They would have.
He missed some time.
At the end of last season, he's this is why I never want a salary cap in the playoffs.
If you can get more stars in the playoffs, get them in the playoffs.
Other teams that are rebuilding sell your stars, put them in the playoffs, get as many of those guys in the playoffs as you can.
And and and the quality of play from the United States coming together as quickly as they did and sweeping the tournament until the championship game.
It is a game of inches. It's a game of chaos.
it's a game of like just sometimes it's next goal win and that's what it was pretty sure that
happened in 2010 too i don't think they lost they were a phenomenal team in 2010 unreal um and i i
also want to shout out my favorite goaltender in the entire league still jordan bennington
jordan bennington my new favorite goaltender in the connor hellebuck who was one goal one goal
one goal and then three goals if you have a goalie 10 the goal huh 10 the goal what do you mean what
you said if you're if you're a goal if you're going oh 10 the goal yes which he did and
binnington man holy shit chaos chaos out there uh no but like bitter bitter style
gives me heart palpitations there's no question oh no it's not good for your health um i
was in physical discomfort that entire stream yes it was four hours but connor halibut on the
other hand the way he plays the way he squares up the way he's always sort of calm and confident
like if you have a game if you have a tournament where i think the americans yeah they just allowed
like a goal a game right until this one so you have four four games and you allow six goals
total or something like that you should win that tournament uh one against finland one against
canada canada what was the two two against two against sweden okay seven goals in four games
you should win yeah he did everything and that for team canada next year because obviously uh it's
going to be a bigger tournament at the olympics and it's a bit of a different tournament because
there's like no fighting it's a little bit more of a skate tournament um creating chaos in front
of him is going to have to be priority number one that guy is fucking ice uh my guess is the first
two round robin games of the olympics next year brady kachuk takes five penalties and then he'll
learn oh yeah it's a tight i double hf whistle yeah he's gonna get uh very acquainted with double
ihf officiating yeah because like adjusting from this tournament to that yep is gonna be a struggle
it's gonna be very difficult what a great coming out party for brady to just show like he can do
it on the stage he's not nervous he has everything that matthew has in terms of that that playoff
energy so i hope that him and sanderson who looked incredible get a chance to actually do it in the
playoffs because real winners in this thing in ottawa senators for knowing that they got brady
and sanderson the still with brady it it it felt like he had to do or maybe he feels like he has
to do too much like because he was doing so much during the play but after every whistle
kale mccarr was his job i'm gonna fuck with him all night like he just straight up like again oh
you missed that call you missed that call okay he punched kale mccarr in the face at least twice
yeah i think that's just who he is like i think of course there's never gonna be a time no matter
even if he has his brother on the same line with him he's gonna be that guy doing all that stuff
and he's never he's always gonna be relentless yeah i i just like what a great leader that the
sun's got oh totally yeah like less less so for team usa because again it's an international
tournament but uh uh for the nhl um for the ottawa senators they need to get someone to take
a little bit of the shithead load off of it can't just be one guy but yeah like he'll still do it
yeah that's what i'm saying like even if you have all of the shitheads with him he'll still be he'll
be a shithead like the number one shithead yeah yeah no but like it's it's like when marshan was
coming up and lucic was at his peak you could spread the shitheadery around and you had and
you had you know zidane ochara and charlie mcavoy was coming up you know and like you know you have
those guys charlie mcavoy threw some crazy hits in that first game oh my god it's a shame he wasn't
playing because you want you want best on best as much as you can but and i i think the bruins
are super pissed at Team USA right now
about how they handled that situation.
Two things.
Kiefer Sherwood would fit the Ottawa Senators like a glove.
Oh, man.
He was great for Nashville last year.
Yeah, that's the kind of guy I'm talking about.
Yep.
Yeah, Vancouver hated playing against him so much
that they gave him a bunch of money and signed him.
Yeah, it's crazy.
Knowing what we know about McAvoy's injury,
maybe you could bring up the statement from the...
I can, yeah.
knowing what we know about McAvoy's injury so he got injured in the game against Finland
which is a crucial part to the story is the timeline injures his shoulder against Finland
they let him play against Canada what did he do against Canada he shut he was all over McDavid
he hit everything that fucking moved yeah which i'm gonna go ahead and guess didn't help right
his his injury to his ac joint so the statement from the bruins reads as follows by the way there's
a lot of tweets down because there are there's a lot of congrats tweets from our shan which i
think is really classy by the bruins organization uh statement from boston bruins head team physician
Dr. Peter Asness.
Asness?
Asness.
I'm going to go with Asness.
Charlie McAvoy sustained an injury to his right shoulder.
Something joint.
I'm not even.
AC.
Yeah, AC joint in Team USA's Four Nations face-off game against Finland on February 13th.
He underwent treatment, which was administered by Team USA's medical staff, which is an important note.
I would love to know who the medical staff is.
I do know.
It's the Minnesota Wild medical staff.
and so a lot of people are saying huh and the wild do have a suspicious amount of injuries but
anyway uh upon returning to boston he developed increasing pain for which he was evaluated by
boston bruins medical staff after undergoing x-rays mris and blood work he was diagnosed
with having an infection in his right shoulder as well as significant and a significant injury
to his ac joint he underwent an irrigation and debridement procedure at massachusetts
general hospital on february 18th he remains in the hospital he's fine now uh under you know he
had antibiotics and his condition is improving so from behind the scenes what you can't glean from
that is that's the boston bruins going we're really fucking pissed about how you handled our
player what would happen if they weren't there like where are the olympics next year milan italy
okay so for this tournament the minnesota wild staff i guess just or they were team usa staff
the bruins staff just so happened to be there because the tournament's in boston
what would happen if they weren't there i think that that the bruins organization i think cam
neely's calling bill garren and going um we're gonna have to figure something out here because
whatever your staff did and they'll probably have a pretty tense conversation about it
we didn't like it and here's why and i don't know and i don't think anybody knows the specifics we
know the bruins are pissed and they think this was mishandled well and this is the this is the
second time it's happened between the boston bruins and minnesota wild which is going under
the radar because last season the boston bruins were upset with the medicals they received on
pat maroon when they acquired him from the minnesota white and i don't remember that and
And now, once again, we have the Minnesota Wild training staff mishandling a Boston Bruins player.
I don't think things are going to be – I think there's going to be a good conversation between Boston and Minnesota when all of this ends.
Cam Neely versus Bill Garrett.
Gary Bettman is going to have to be there to litigate.
But this is the second time in a calendar year that Boston is upset with the handling of medicals with Minnesota.
Yep.
It's crazy.
Wow, wow, wow.
I forgot about the Patrick Maroon stuff
because when the Bruins got him,
he, I want to say, didn't play for a while
and then scored and came up against the Bruins.
So I don't know what's going on in Minnesota,
but it's not good on their part.
Like this doesn't, on the surface,
I don't know the details on the surface,
it doesn't look good for them.
And great.
You're in charge of handling this guy
whose life is worth millions of dollars
because of what he's paid to do, and there's an infection?
Excuse me?
You mishandled our money bag.
How dare you?
Honestly.
All last show, we talked about, hey, the Bruins might not make the playoffs.
And what hadn't broken by the time we recorded was that, that story.
Yep.
How do you make the playoffs without Charlie McAvoy?
well and i think if you're the bruins is it even worth like i know they're they're it's it's
impossible you can't go down to the bruins uh clubhouse and go hey guys uh just back it back
it off that's not their culture uh and i know they're gonna try but if you're you know cam
neely if you're uh don sweeney you probably do need to look at this and go listen we're right
there right now and this has been a disaster season we just need to quickly retool and change
a few things and let's sell what we can recoup some assets get swayman into training camp uh
maybe you can flip uh corpus allo for thatcher demko with that kevin lincoln and deal like you
know get get your goaltending back up to where you want it to be um i'm kidding by the way vancouver
i know that you wouldn't do that um my point is the this i i agree with you steve get to the
playoffs to what end right if mcavoy is going to be out like let's say it's week to week and we
don't know that at this point but let's just say it is let's say it's three or four weeks till he
even comes back what's the point what are we doing um you know really what are we doing because it's
you can't risk the long-term health of this player bingo because he's the guy he's the guy and you've
got young guys coming up you've got good young goaltenders in the minors you've got a whole
bunch of you've got the next generation of bruins coming up you need mcavoy at full health i i just
looked it up the minnesota wild better thank their lucky stars because just before the break
uh the bruins third most recent game before the break was a home win against the minnesota wild
they're so lucky to refresh your memory steve the boston bruins traded for patrick maroon last year
on march 8th he did not practice with the team until april 1st he did not play a game with them
until april 13th whoa because minnesota apparently was not entirely honest on the recovery recovery
timeline from his back surgery that he had last year back so there's some the underlying stuff
might be going on minnesota with their medical staff yuck yeah dude yeah that's that's where
you get into find a pick territory like it's like honestly uh i was gonna say it if the dad
off thing was we're the first to the senators
that's
a space yeah that's spicy
baby that's Craig Leopold in charge there
Craig Leopold yep and and Bill
Guerin and who yeah and listen I love the
Minnesota wild team makeup and everything I think they're
a great team but damn dude John Tavares
hurt his knee in Sochi
and we lost
a decade of international hockey
as a result I
think there's probably going to
at least be an investigation
this is bad i think jeremy jacobs will want that uh and cam neely it might
he might just anger stomp to minnesota through the snow through the snow the snow will part
yeah out of jesus yeah yeah yeah out of fear like it was moses jesse oh yeah act like you
went to catholic yeah yeah you're both confirmed you should know that i don't know it was a long
time ago uh there's a lot of words in the bible a lot of a lot of words and they and they put them
in weird orders and they're it's very strange thick book thin pages very thin pages you got
to be careful if you got sweaty hands you know right just go right through the thing you're
reading the other side of the page and you don't mean to yeah you can't uh have chicken wings and
read the book no that's right so uh obviously um i i want to i want to just do a quick thing for
for sweden and finland we did talk about them the rivalry there is heated it's just not a north
american rivalry they hate each other i think for the olympics what we found out today and what we
found out this tournament is uh uh underestimate sweden at your peril oh yeah they lost two games
in overtime this could have easily been them yep and uh you know i know that they blew it against
finland they came back in a monster fashion against uh canada in the first game uh that team
and everybody's going to be focused on canada the united states for this tournament maybe russia
comes back in we'll see how the geopolitical situation shakes out that would be interesting
but i i do have to say i was really impressed with team sweden despite the fact that their
record is not beautiful they tied canada in points guys oh i was impressed with uh
the fact finland didn't have a decor and still pushed everyone to the brink like
all right the states kicked their ass but like it was tight through 40
mm-hmm almost came back against canada sweat that one out and they beat sweden
this this tournament could have gone to absolutely anyone absolutely anyone and that's how it played
out yeah it's awesome it's awesome it's awesome like i know i know it was a canada u.s final it
very narrowly like canada won on a tiebreaker against a team that they beat in overtime i want
to i want to shout out the cj show and i should have done this earlier i'm sorry my brain's been
jumbled to fuck uh the cj show julian said it's the best he's ever heard chris i haven't heard it
yet so i don't know to it on the way home uh have you heard it jesse no no okay yeah julian said
guys please make sure people know about this because he chris was unbelievable today and i'm
like okay uh so i'm excited to listen to that on the way home uh we got that coming out we've got
uh agent provocateur will return next week um and we've got a whole bunch of other things steve
you're going to be streaming Sunday.
Yep, Leafs, Blackhawks.
Without Marner and Matthews.
And Cali Yarncroke, it looks like.
We don't know that.
Cali Yarncroke, despite skating,
is not going to be good to go this weekend.
So Steve's will play.
Okay, so that's interesting
because there's seven games left
until the trade deadline,
which means Cali Yarncroke, at maximum,
will only be able to play five of them.
This team's got decisions to make.
oh yeah well here's the thing set you like immediately now right like we're enjoying
this moment we will enjoy this day tomorrow we're back into the nhl and all we are going to hear
about is trade deadline and it's i think it's interesting today uh freach mentioned on apparently
on his show that um it's never heard of it yeah 32 big thoughts big thoughts or something i don't
know anyway he said uh look for miko ranting it to potentially be a trade piece i keep hearing that
i do too and i i mean listen fuck you i i think about eric tolski i'm like fuck yeah
you can't sign him fine go go retrade him do not lose him for nothing don't do that to your team
that's ballsy it's ballsy it's a it you gotta take risk it's a career definer man
you can't fuck this up i like creative general manager i 100 and i want this i want a little
listen it doesn't need to go full nba where they're doing pick swaps until 20 2036 but like
i want big trades i want big names i want big anticipation and him being right at the top of
the trade board again like cj's big board or whatever comes out yeah and he's at the top of
it now after being trade what crazy what if he goes back to colorado holy shit and plays with
niches like any any trade involving miko ranton um i think has to involve a conditional real good
pick um based on whether or not he re-signs there has to yeah there has to it seems like he wants
to test and by the way the way he played in this tournament he might be worth what he's asking
he's crazy yeah he's uh i've heard of him yeah he's pretty darn good i wonder with a guy like
him too if the signing team signs him to a one-year deal and then extends him eight years
i wonder when we start to see that in the nhl because carolina already has him that's the sort
of thing they would do well for sure but like you know would a player like that be open to it like
you have a handshake deal you wouldn't be able to sign him until january 1st 2026 but i do think
we're going to start to see that in the nhl with the cap going where it is if you want somebody
who's got a max term deal and you're signing them july 1st the difference in the amount of money is
insane like you know we talk about mitch marner for instance if he signs uh for what is it uh
i'm just gonna pull the calculator out for a second okay uh if he signs for
uh eight times 13 eight times 13 is 104 million like nine million a year yeah he signs for like
right eight times 13 is 104 million right that's okay here's the thing about let's say he wants
13 and a half seven times 13.5 is only 94 and a half million that's a big that's 10 million
dollars difference that's a big deal and so i'm wondering if we get that finally this year where
it's like hey we've like kind of like what carolina did when they got cocky at me they
signed into that big rfa deal and then extended him for a lot less money bless them for being
creative but like how's that gone yeah yeah but we're i mean if it was moose it would be different
right like if you're if you got ranted you're like yeah okay yeah do that with the big the big
stars you're not doing that with bench guys most of the time right um i'm wondering if we see that
i'm wondering uh who finally goes like do the boston bruids now with charlie mcavoy's injury
go okay fine we're gonna retool we'll sell a little bit this year you know does that then
mean Detroit and Ottawa
are like well shit we better buy because here's our chance
or do you buy because you're like screw it we're going
for it and replace them
that would be very Boston
every trade deadline they're in
gotta get into the team you're talking about's head
right you're
like ah here's what I would do
what would they do
yeah I think it's a big if
Mika Rantanen gets traded
again but if he does
my money is on the
Vegas Golden Knights
i think that'll be fun yeah yep go away wow go away that's enough out of you vegas yeah really
what comes back the other way i wonder now um all right should we do the press conference
sure do i get to talk about connor hellebuck oh of course you did a lot of of course praising
this man can you please add the fraud watch graphic to the final product of the show i think
i think we'll get there yeah but we need to go on a journey first oh hey guys put on your binoculars
for this journey through the jungle because we are watching right now with adam throw your
binoculars oh sorry your binoculars come on i'm looking we're watching we're looking we're weeding
through the jungle and we see that got on my machete there's a goaltender who in their last
nine playoff games has a save percentage below 900 oh oh we see also out there a goaltender who
has lost 12 of their last 14 playoff games holy shit jesse why are you doing this to elia samson
And we see a goaltender who lost the championship game against Canada.
Fraud.
The fraud alert has been activated.
We are not watching.
The alert has been hit.
Connor Hellebuck.
No.
Don't do this.
The alert has been activated.
You are a fraud.
If it's Winnipeg-Toronto in the finals, I'm scared for our lives.
Con Smythe.
Con Alaba-Fraud confirmed.
Con or Hello Smythe.
If he was a good goaltender, he would have won the game.
Wow.
Jordan Binnington, my hero.
He won it.
He's not a fraud.
My goat.
He's the truth.
Put this in the corner, Matty.
There you go.
Did you make that graphic, by the way?
I did.
It's so good.
It's a great graphic, Jesse.
that is high quality if you are if you are listening to this episode i hope you get to watch
it because wow that is you activate it when you see the fraud man i saw it last night was that a
free was that a free version of microsoft paint that you got i don't know what you're talking
about how'd you do that i don't know what you're talking about broadcast what i love about it too
is like there's fraud alert like two different and you use the same picture for both of them
like i don't know this is broadcast quality little to no effort here fraud alert
The alert has been activated.
We are no longer on Fraud Watch.
The alert has been activated.
Wow.
People, evacuate your homes.
We found a fraud.
Connor Hellebuck.
Thank you.
Wow.
Oh, you're a dick.
The Presser.
Harry.
The Presser.
The Presser.
The Presser.
The Presser.
The Presser.
The Presser.
The Presser.
The Presser.
The Presser.
The Presser.
The Presser.
The Steve Dangle Press Conference.
First question.
Mitch Marner, did he really suck last night?
No.
All right.
20 minutes.
um going to our discord
going to our discord
fraud alerts still on the screen so we're off watch we're on alert what's the next what's the
next like what like what defcon level is next there's got to be like five oh if he if he like
collapses in the first round or something fraud con five oh my god yeah we gotta have another
level higher than alert because yeah we've passed watch it's no longer watch it's alert okay this is
from ice cold pt on our discord server okay during the gary cup stream pierre mcguire was mentioned
gary cup script is that what they have the gary cup uh with that being said what is on the top
five classic steve game calls list so they brought up pierre mcguire because i can
so if we were to build your list counting down from five to one what are your top five you got
to call them live on streams oh i like that top five yeah i'll i'll expose myself a little here
a couple days ago i called adam in the car because i'm just i'm in toronto traffic so i'm just
talking to the windshield and i was like adam i have this idea for a line like if they win
and uh we workshopped it and i was like uh you'll never uh you can never have our trophy and you can
never take our country and i was like should i flip it and adam's like yeah absolutely flip it
and i didn't that's what i ended up saying i thought i thought it was metal as fuck um i think
it's a really good one the tavaris one when he wins it in overtime i thought was really good
against Tampa game six yeah but I did this
weird thing where I like clap my elbows
together around my head because I was just
losing my mind
if you go and watch it back I went like
this I don't want to feel the second
hand embarrassment
yeah I know I
like watching that clip
like to just relive that moment
and then I do that and I'm like you dick
what do you remember the call
no
oh hard to remember that stuff
I don't blame you there.
I do remember Kerfoot, Kerfoot, Kerfoot.
But when the Leafs had the 4-1 comeback against Tampa and Kerfoot won it in overtime.
Okay.
So what is the list?
Is one last night?
One is last night.
Yeah.
Easy.
Five.
Where's Tavares, OT winner?
That's got to be like two or three.
Yeah, two or three.
So let's say two.
I do like Kerfoot, Kerfoot, Kerfoot.
Three?
Yeah.
We get four and a five.
last year i know there were some good ones but i was so i i don't remember last year's playoffs
um find out what isla was
a month and a half old and i had a book that was due and the playoffs i was a corpse person
it was not a fun it was not a fun playoff run every almost every spring i'm so upset when they
get eliminated and then i'm also like okay but now this might mean you might actually survive
these playoffs so um and i'm sure montreal canadians fans uh i know my reaction
to game six, Montreal beating the Leafs.
I know they liked it.
Oh, when I called Arturi Lekin and Mikko Lettinen
when he scored an OT winner in the playoffs
and fucked the call up entirely.
That doesn't make the list.
That doesn't make the list?
No, no.
Some people would disagree.
Some people would disagree.
The Montreal run, you must have had some fun games in there.
Oh, yeah.
And some not fun games.
even like um last season you did all the stanley cup final games yep like the the comeback the
three straight games like that there must have been some really good calls in there that was
fantastic yeah that was so fun so fun to call it's hard to ask somebody to remember their calls
without them going back and thinking about it because you are so in the moment that it all
blurs together i remember talking to joe bowen about that uh when i was working for the maple
Leafs and doing their podcast for a couple seasons and he said I'm like like I'm like do you remember
any of these games does anything stand out he's like no not really he's like I can remember eras
but I can't remember specific games because you know you you and obviously Steve hasn't done
anywhere close to the amount of games that Bowen has he's at 3,000 or whatever you know but you're
so alive and in the moment that you can't you can't remember it you don't get the chance to
soak it in the same way until you've watched it back i i they they showed it's a great question
they showed us something in school the broadcast school um it was inside a truck broadcast truck
for a football game and it was like an insane like there was a interception to a game-winning
touchdown and ready to take two ready and the guy's just losing his fucking mind and after the
game is over and they're off air he goes who won you didn't know who won that's immaterial to making
the content you know you had no idea yeah like it was just so in the moment and i feel like i've
gotten to do a shitload of really chaotic exciting games it's only once i can remember uh well maybe
twice uh a good and a bad uh where i've gotten to end a game by waxing poetically about the series
that was uh tampa beat montreal pretty handily um in game five of the cup final so i got to talk
about you know the lightning back to back they did it in front of an empty building and then they
did it in front of their home crowd and they did it in less than a year and everything like that
uh game seven leafs habs i got to just be like you you dumb fuck fathomable group of failures
yeah uh that was just a lucid experience just talking about that damn team
um yeah what were your favorites please help yeah in the comments down below when when game like
this was this past no two sundays ago we had the super bowl and it was a blow by like the second
quarter and even like the comeback wasn't real comeback and that stuff that's really tough on
the broadcasters because that last quarter and a half really the whole second half is you're just
talking about tap dancing it's just like okay we're gonna celebrate the eagles here for two
quarters you know we gotta just go for all they've done all the great stuff all the great players
they have and you'd rather have the close game for sure because then you're talking about the
actual game instead of everything surrounding the game so yeah vegas scored nine goals in their
clincher against the panthers so for the entire game just chatting about oh vegas is a great team
yeah you know like that's the game that's that's your call for that game last year uh the puck is
in the corner um and with five seconds left the oilers still could have tied it right oh yeah so
that that those are the experiences i'd rather call um they're not they're just not as good for
health hear that it's your money calling it wants a promotion elevate your savings with the scotia
high interest savings account always earn high regular interest rates that grow the more you
save and invest conditions apply visit scotiabank.com hisa to learn more scotia bank you're
you're richer than you think one fun one here from julian one one two four on discord and then
we can end it they said gun to the earth you have to give one report your undivided attention
number one a free agent linked to the blue jays number two a speculative speculative trade
involving the Calgary Flames.
Number three,
an Arizona-based ownership
looking into land for the hockey team.
If you have to give
one of these eternal dead ends
your attention,
which one is it?
You said the...
Is it just involving the Flames?
Or is it the Flames and Leafs?
No, it's Flames.
They said Flames.
Flames to anybody.
Do we put a little asterisk
when we say Flames?
Because the Flames always include
the Leafs by default
just because they want to get clicks.
Like, it's like you always see, like,
hey, here are the three teams that are actually interested.
And the Toronto Maple Leafs have called.
It's like...
And GMs, by the way, it's not the insiders that do that.
GMs do that.
They'll tell...
GMs and agents will say,
and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
So the report gets click, click, click, click, click.
More people are interested.
Okay.
They know how to manipulate.
Arizona talking about buying land.
Please gag me with a spoon.
oh god the blue talk about a land auction come on please i love a good land auction please bury me
alive i'd rather be buried alive in the arizona desert than like joe pesci at the end of that
movie yeah yes he's still breathing that's me but avoiding a conversation about a land auction
that's why i got into this talk about land auctions okay so that one's not the one yeah
um the blue jays um i actually uh i don't know if i'm breaking news here i i saw this really
interesting yeah um thing they're changing their logo uh-huh to a cuck chair oh it's just
a chair to sit in while everyone else has fun yeah that's the blue jays logo so not them
um and uh i think i'd go with the flames i'd rather give my undivided attention
to the calgary flames probably not making a trade what if we said it's a flames leafs trade son of
a gun then which one are you picking well i'd still pick it but i'd be mad about it yeah adam
i'll take i'm with steve on that i don't have a better answer i think the blue jay is being
interested in anybody in free agency it's me being interested in uh buying a million dollar
mclaren car like i just yeah of course you owning the mclaren f1 team yes i am very interested
super fucking interested being the boss of lando i bet you'll be one of the runners up yeah yeah
listen if i email them i am one of the runners up because at least i was one of the guys on the list
registered interest isn't that great um yeah man like i just i calgary doesn't make me so mad
because i kind of know what they're up to or i did last year this year they're a better team
they're getting stuff done i might actually believe it well and last year i did believe
it too it was just more like guys how many times are you going to lead elliot friedman's segment
on hockey night in canada in a row they did stuff it just wasn't with the leafs 100 yeah and and now
i'm like well they're probably they might be trying to buy calgary clearly lacks like um like
a miko ranton and star type player right so if they are if they're in conversations like they
were for jack eichel that was real yeah i can i can see that oh the but the jays they're uh they're
one of the top three teams up to
sign Boggs McGruff.
$700 billion
they're going to give him. Boggs McGruff
can hit 242. He sure can.
Easily. Man.
Fan favorite. There's so many boring
ass stats. Boring ass stats
that justify it. I can't wait.
Boggs McGruff is just John McDonnell.
Yeah. Baseball has gone
completely away from the eye test where
everything is just numbers. Saber metrics
and the such. It's a cool
name. Saber metrics. It's like a
a sword and a
saber. Do you see
they've introduced in spring training
you can challenge balls and strikes?
No. It's going to make the game
slow. It's pretty
cool. It's instant. Can you do... Oh, really?
It's instant. Yeah. So it can only
be done by the pitcher,
the catcher, or the batter.
So it's not a coach's challenge. It's a
player's challenge, which is fun.
I haven't seen a player get
it wrong yet.
but hey i'm sure it'll happen um uh uh max scherzer and there's a video of max scherzer
now blue jay legendary pitcher going head-to-head with vladdy today at spring training and it's a
three and two count and scherzer gets vladdy no gets him to fucking just reach and very vlad
like when vlad strikes out he fucking it's like he's gonna put his back out um and scherzer gets
just reaching and and so i wanted to ask you guys actually about that because you know we did the
whole conversation last episode about it and to follow it up now it's come out well uh he's liking
pictures of himself uh in a yankees uniform he's asking too much money uh you know he wanted 13
years and that 585 million dollars and that is that's too much and you know it's so funny how
that shift has happened because you know if the blue jays had done what they should have done in
2021 they would have signed him early that's the screw up here signing him now it would have been
an overpay i agree because they put themselves in that position but there are a lot of people
who are like hey you know like vlad's just asking too much money what an a-hole i'm like dude if you
were vlad wouldn't you ask too much money why do why should the blue jays have to overpay for a
homegrown product i don't know because you're going to be a free agent in november yeah but
I'm curious about the narrative shift that you guys think of there just seeing it play out because
it's been my b story underneath team Canada versus team United States you know the uh the owners of
the Blue Jays have like a near monopoly on sports media in this country I think that's where it came
from isn't that funny how that just kind of leaks out there and then becomes a thing yeah now the
reason he's asking for all that money is because there's a team out there that will pay him that
money and that is what the cost of doing business with a player who was was 24 years old when he
finished second in mvp voting in 2021 i might be in 23 like that's that's when you should have
locked him up because the prices then would have been like 350 million and not 585 million or
whatever he's asking for right now but even that that number that's being thrown out there because
i think it was david ortiz who threw it out on mlb network of it's around 585 around 13 years
that's 45 to 50 million a year which is i think what you should pay for vladimir guerrero jr if
he's one of the best 15 guys in baseball let's say is that is that a stretch no easily you could
say that and and at hitting at hitting yeah yeah uh that's what those guys make now like the way
I think that a lot of these owners and the people running these front office have in their mind that salaries are still like, oh, 35 is going to be great.
You're super 35 million dollars.
No, right now it's about 50 because you're paying for the future.
And Vladdy's still so young.
This is his first time he's eligible for free agency.
If you pay him for 12 years, halfway through, he's still 32, which is great for an athlete.
Most MLB players don't even crack the league until they're his age.
No.
Usually when you're handing out these deals, it's to the 29-year-old, the 28-year-old, the 30-year-old, and then you're paying them until they're like 38, 40.
You're getting him for the prime of his career.
Just pony up.
And if it doesn't go well, oh, well, at least you did it.
It's just money.
You're going to make it back in one offseason because you're Rodgers.
Sell a couple more cell phones.
Nah.
Like $50 million a year is nothing to this or to this fucking owner.
It makes no sense.
Yep.
Nah,
I hate,
I hate that.
I hate that re-narrative.
I do too.
And I was surprised at how quickly it took hold,
but then I shouldn't be because again,
as Steve said,
they do have a lot of people.
Yeah.
No,
everything.
The weird,
the weird thing that's really hard to grasp of cheering for this team is
that this didn't come at the end of the season because this is the,
like Stephen Stamkos at the end of the year,
They can't get a deal done.
It's June 28th.
He's got to walk, you know?
This happened before the season started,
so we have to go a whole year knowing this guy's going to leave.
With the memory of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the lineup.
He's a zombie right now, but he's on our team,
and we have to root for him because at the end of the day,
we want the team to be successful despite how much we hate the front office
and we want the team to suck so that they all get fired.
We still want the team to win.
So it's such a conflicting emotion right now going through this entire season.
imagine the blue jays are good oh they finally win a game in the shipack shipadco the shapiro
atkins era which they have not done people like shatkins shatkins i know i just think that i just
think it's such a dumb name like i don't know i never got onto that uh and then guerrero promptly
leaves in in free agency i think if the jays are good this year it's mean yeah but they will be
Now I think they will be.
No, that's mean.
What a slap in the...
He's going to hit like the better than he's ever hit in his entire career,
and they're just going to walk away and make more money.
Have some dignity and beat ass.
Yeah.
Don't play meaningful games in October.
You guys are jerks.
Have some dignity and beat ass.
Have some dignity and stink.
Bichette is such an afterthought right now.
Sign that man too.
Like during...
There's a three-year stretch where no one in baseball had more hits than Bo Bichette.
like the dude's the same age as vladi and he didn't have a great year last year sign him now
but he was injured like he was injured for most of it he had a very down year give him the money
when he's kind of injured and down so you can get a little cheaper contract learn from your mistakes
i don't know what they're doing yep or i'm upset condescend your fan base and do it again
we had a question on discord if you wanted to go there yeah steve you mentioned it quickly
it's based off of this conversation i'll pull up their name when i find the the question but they
said does what is going on with the blue jays right now worry you about the raptors and the
leafs because they're going to have the same identical owner yes no well adam's wrong uh
because they don't have the same identical president yeah listen yeah shapiro pocketbook
Shapiro is Ed Rodgers' guy, right?
It was Scott on Discord who said that.
So is Keith Pelley.
You know, when Keith Pelley was hired,
Rodgers and Bell were already talking about this sale.
They already knew it was going to happen.
And the problem in Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment here
is that you've got a rebuilding Raptors squad,
which is very expensive.
Like, you look at Ingram hasn't even played a game,
and they're going to pay him $40 million a year.
They'll pay Ingram $40 million.
They won't pay Vlad.
I don't know, man.
And Ingram's great.
Like, when he's healthy, he's phenomenal.
But, like, when he's healthy.
Vlad literally plays every game.
Like, he misses three games a year.
So that's already the organization's operating
in a different sort of degree.
I think that you look at, again,
I'm going to keep going back to this.
They blew out everybody at TFC.
Good.
um and the way that rogers uh and less so larry tannenbaum because larry doesn't have it larry was
the the linchpin before now larry's just guy who's going to be bought out in a couple years he used
to be like the kind of decision maker because rogers and bell couldn't decide on anything and
larry was there in the middle being like okay i'll kind of make the decision here's what it's
i'm the extra vote so um at mlse you have five brands two of them will perpetually lose money
The Marlies and the Argos.
I know it was Larry that wanted them
and ultimately got the thing across the line to buy the Argos.
I wouldn't be shocked to see the Argos be sold to Larry's new company as well,
along with the Toronto Tempo,
which is the new WNBA team that's launching in 2026.
That's just pure speculation on my part,
but I don't think MLSC as a corporation
loves losing that much money on the Argos each year.
I know that they don't mind with the Marlies
because they folded into the Leafs
and therefore they're profitable.
Especially with the CFL being such a big TSN product.
Yes.
Like, it doesn't make sense for them to own it.
TFC, though, is something where
they were losing a ton of money
and the game sucked.
And it's like, not even...
TFC, it's like they weren't even in it.
Like, oh, you got the third highest payroll in the league
and you're not even in it.
Like, you're finishing last place.
You fucking suck.
Ed Rogers is looking at this and going,
there is one team in the maple leaf sports and entertainment portfolio that makes makes money
it's the toronto maple leafs and one thing i will tell you about the way that rogers does business
is if something makes money they make the resources available they do double down on that
and i think that maple leaf sports understands that the raptors uh are ultimately because the
nba is worth so much more the franchise tag is worth a lot but you can lose big with those
contracts uh year over year so they need to get the Raptors back to profitability and into the
playoffs and going to first and second rounds perpetually every year Toronto you keep my
Marner Matthews Nylander together um you know you re-sign Nyes you bring Tavares back at a lower
number whatever that number is and the caps going up uh the Leafs are actually I think really well
positioned because they are the team that's supporting the entire corporation and I don't
think a lot of people realize this during uh during covid a lot of ownership groups bill
marr talks about this he was a part owner of the mets at the time um the uh the you know a lot of
these owners for the first time had to take money out of their accounts and inject it into these
sports organizations and maple leaf sports and entertainment from what i have heard are one of
them nobody talks about it it's not been reported but from what i have heard ownership had to put
money in to keep the
business going and in a time
like that that's not out of that's not crazy
and I think when you look at
Ed Rogers and
Tony Safieri and how they operate they
don't want to do that again so you support
the Toronto Maple Leafs and you get as much
damn money out of this as you possibly can
yeah that's nice Adam let me tell you what's
gonna happen
I think you're done Adam no I'm done
I'm done let me tell you something
give it to me
all our favorite teams are gonna win
oh yeah that's what's gonna happen it's gonna be pretty good yeah maddie said let's go yeah let's
go let's go teams ed rogers also just to add to what you're talking about adam he has a
a bigger magnifying glass on the baseball team he loves them he loves the blue in a way that
he doesn't love the raptors yeah so i don't think he gets the raptors no uh but he owns them
He understands the market position, though.
The Raptors are your millennial Gen Z, Gen Alpha team that is going to be.
Whereas the Blue Jays, frankly, MLB in general, caters to an old man like him.
I would love to spend a billion dollars on something I don't fucking get.
Well, that's business, right?
At that level, that is business.
Yeah, money in, money out.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Guys.
You hire people to get it.
I think rich people should get taxed more.
What do you say?
Well, you know, you hire people to get it.
Holy shit.
i don't know i don't fucking get it here's two billion dollars i think he gets what it could be
which is money um yeah so just like there's a that team is operating differently than mlsc
yes and i think the one thing i'll say and i know nobody wants to believe me
mark shapiro is a good business operator the reason ross atkins is still here is because
mark shapiro believes in him right in your face i know i know mark shapiro is a good business
person he transformed the the cleveland franchise he has transformed how it it feels to go to a jay's
game except for the on i know i know i'm just telling you why he's there under your covers
and i'm gonna lift it over your i don't like it any more than you do over this but this is all
okay let's just wrap it up all right we didn't mention the biggest news of the day obviously
Kevin Lankanen yeah um I think that I think he's a good goal we're on Thatcher Demko watch eh
uh I think he's I don't really I don't think you're having both of those goalies there with
Archer Silov's uh waiting in the wings for that much money that's 10 million bucks at least well
what is that and and so I mean any team would be happy to have Thatcher Demko if he's healthy
so my question is is Lankanen's been great is Lankanen now the starter is Thatcher Demko
more injured than we know or is he up for trade because i can't see them keeping both
so thatcher demko is in like okay injury liabilities aside he's in year four of five
of a contract really him yeah that contract's already expiring four of five and it only pays
him five million bucks if he's healthy that's a crazy asset honestly or just keep them both
yeah 10 million bucks in your goaltending less nine and a half million for goaltending as long
as the goaltending is really good is very reasonable yeah just ask the boston bruins
worked out for them no i i am okay they're they're in a great position they could trade them
they could keep them no great position trade you you know i wouldn't though you could never i
wouldn't you love me too much all right let's get let's uh i hope you have a great weekend we have
we actually have some
very exciting news
to announce Monday
yeah
so there's some stuff
to announce Monday
and next week's actually
going to be a big
