The Steve Dangle Podcast, with your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wilde, and Jesse Blake.
Let's go!
If, uh, if you are looking for a show that is gonna bitch about the refs all game, all
game.
You found it!
No, you didn't.
Jess, can you turn my headphones up a little bit?
Yeah, the whole referee excuse, if that's what you're here for,
we ain't bringing that today.
Nope.
I said my piece in the LFR.
They missed some calls.
They're always going to miss calls.
It's fine.
And because Steve said in the LFR,
we're therefore not allowed to say anything at all, ever.
There it is.
I'm fast.
Oh, yeah, that's good.
Thank you.
I appreciate it.
Sorry.
I'm fascinated.
by what you have planned for the show adam because i've anticipated this morning
uh more than in a different way than most podcast days following a game okay um and it's
i i'll i'll wait for the perfect time to get into it okay but usually there's a lot of overlap
between what i have to say in the lfr video and then only a few hours later what i have to say
on the podcast today it's completely different yeah and i'm so hot and bothered that i've already
spilled my coffee hang on hang on already okay so here's what i want you to do jesse i need you to
go to danglepix.com yeah and brag about your score because we got a shout out are you you're
walking okay Adam's leaving
in the middle of the show
because Steve spilled coffee
and that is
redemption for me
no longer the spill guy
did you notice how
I didn't
ruin any expensive equipment
when I did it
I think that's called projecting
do we have to go to Long and McQuaid
to replace this coaster
I tell them how you did a dangle pick
Tell them how you did.
I think Steve is a little upset that he is now Spill Guy.
Yeah, he is Spill Guy.
I am Spill Guy.
He's the latest Spill Guy, for sure.
I am Spill Kessel over here.
So let me log back into my DanglePix.
I got them here if you want them.
Oh, yeah.
Read it out to me.
DanglePix.com.
Now, first off, a big shout out to Sports Dog.
Sports Dog with 17 points, won a Mitch Marner signed jersey.
Dig a Tay.
You are number two.
You get the $250 gift card.
Dig a Tay.
Digatti.
I woke up in a new Diggity.
No?
I don't know.
I think it's Diggity, Adam.
No, Diggity is with an I.
Yeah, but I think they just spelled it funny.
No, they didn't.
It's Diggity.
It's spelled Diggity with an A.
It's Diggity.
Okay.
And then Smalls 96.
They could have been Smalls 69, but they decided to be Smalls 96.
That's when you're both really tired.
Skip that.
And just want to go to bed.
It's been a long day, and I did a lot of laundry.
Honey, I think we should 96.
So they all won.
But it's always, you know, internally we want to have, by the way, over 2,000 people signed up for this.
We have another one coming for danglepicks.com tonight.
It's coming out for obviously tomorrow night's game.
So make sure you get in on it.
Mitch Marder signed jersey every single time.
We have, let me give you the points.
Hold on, Steve.
Let me give you the points.
Let him read it.
All right.
Now, do I start from the top or start from the bottom?
Because this isn't about me doing well.
It's about the opposite of that.
Okay, all right.
So I'm going to start with Jesse.
Jesse finished 45th out of 2,117.
That's extremely good.
Not bad.
14 points, not bad, Jesse.
I finished 514th.
Top quarter.
Top quarter, top 25%.
That's a 75% on the test.
I'm happy with that.
That's with nine points.
Steve Angle.
1690
with 6 points
1690th place
I put my faith in the Toronto Maple Leafs
that's a mistake
I know dude
that's how we figured out there were over 2000 people
signed up because I'm like I must be in last
we thought you might have finished dead last
yeah
there was a chance man
there was a real chance
you're only like 400 from the bottom
you're doing great
yeah that's actually true yikes
son of a gun how are you so bad at this oh man i don't know it's been really fun doing this for
each game oh i love it like i i've gotten a little competitive with it and it's it's paid off you
know i'm 45th in game five let's see what game six holds maybe steve will finish in the 1500s
game two i just put all my faith in the leafs and then they won seven two and i finished 20th
yeah that was good that was good but uh then i dropped about 1600 spots
holy is that all that's not bad um it's fine i want to do a shout out to zachary burns on
instagram uh he he let me know beforehand that a he was at game uh i want to say game two
and he was sitting with a couple of people from sweden and they are listeners to the sdp because
i guess they got to talking and and and the show came up so i r sandin and a kneeling no no it was
not them but i i just uh i just thought that was kind of neat big shout out to them coming here
from uh from sweden just to see a leafs game tony x tweeted uh last night and i love tony x he said
Whoever has the Leafs voodoo doll
Enough is enough
And doesn't that sort of sum up
Where we're at
The Leafs obviously
One thing that I think we should tell you
Is that there is going to be
And I told you that we're going to avoid this
As much as possible
Legit criticism to be leveled
At the referee
But that is how they call games in 5, 6, and 7
If you watch the playoffs
Like we went over this
And they're not going to change it
so it is what it is more directly the leafs got lucky two games in a row and didn't have enough
luck to get lucky three games in a row and we talked about that in the other two episodes you
know you we were feeling ourselves happy about it but at the same time if you looked at games three
and four and thought yeah toronto dominated both of those games then you got the leafs and lightning
jerseys mixed up which i don't blame you for because they totally copied the leafs jersey so
let's start with the first kind of five minutes a bit of a grappling match and then morgan riley
breaks it open five minutes into the game great goal two black eyes three goals and four assists
in the playoffs warry what he had a goal in game seven he had the ot winner in game three he had
the tying goal in game four he scores to open it up in game five and i think in the conversation
that will happen whether the series goes great or poorly um there's going to be a conversation
about guys not being able to elevate their game in big moments and that simply as of yet has not
applied to morgan riley you can't yeah it's it's a reminder in the lesson that regular season hockey
isn't playoff hockey because we're seeing it with a couple guys on the leafs where hey morgan riley
struggled for her like november through february with injuries thrown in in between that and who
knows how healthy he was but when push comes to shove and it's the playoffs and it's seven games
versus tampa morgan riley showing up and we praise marcio dano all regular season for being
one of the top three best defensemen on the toronto maple leafs all season long
and now it's the playoffs and geo hasn't looked that great so right this is a weird dichotomy
with regular season hockey and and playoff hockey we need to remember that for next regular season
where morgan's a gamer you know and like he's he's here and and this is just such an impressive
performance by him in every single game um now when when he scored he like got the crowd into
it he was like pump it up and we were jesse and i were there um and season c yeah yeah
Oh, he was talking to you.
I was like, Adam!
Adam!
My guy!
He didn't scream, let's fucking go.
He screamed, Adam Wilde and Jesse Blake of the Steve Dangle podcast alone.
We had great seats.
Thank you, Adam.
Oh, it was not me, but thank you.
Now, here's where the Leafs drive.
If you're not a fan of the Leafs, if you don't watch every Leaf game, this is where they'll drive you crazy.
They'll score a goal, and they'll instantly allow one.
This does happen.
I don't know if it happens to the Leafs more than other teams, but the Leafs do have, from time to time, and they've had this the entire, this entire era, a focus problem.
They scored the goal, they got amped up, and when the puck dropped 30 seconds later, they could not play defense.
The two regular season whipping boys had a horrible game five.
They did.
Kerfoot, after being the overtime hero in game four, was awful.
Awful.
Just awful.
and Justin Hall is I spoke to someone last night who's not a Leaf fan they're not a Lightning fan
they're a neutral fan and they just said Hall's unplayable well and and and so we're going to get
to that because Anthony Sorelli obviously evened it up a minute later and it had to be fucking
Anthony Sorelli former Oshawa Generals captain uh classic case of the Leafs not that one thing
the Leafs have been really bad at this this uh the series that the Lightning have not is they
They don't hold their blue line when the other team's crossing it.
They let you pass the blue line and then try to defend it.
Whereas the Lightning don't do that.
They're trying to defend right at the blue line to make you go offside.
Well, Hall steps up, and I wonder if maybe that's what he tried to do.
It extraordinarily didn't work.
And then Kerfoot covers his man, which is why Hall goes for that hit.
He's like, well, I got support.
And then he immediately abandons his man.
Right.
And Justin Holl and Mark Giordano were on the ice for this goal, as Steve said.
They've been on the ice for every fucking game.
Well, keep an eye on this.
Later on in the period, Justin Holl gets a tripping penalty on Kucherov.
And obviously, Jesse and I were like, wow, what the hell?
And I was pretty loud last night.
I'm not going to lie.
Adam was loud.
I was really loud.
Did you know that, Steve?
Adam's a seat yeller.
No.
He's one of the guys all game.
Let's break some wind.
Oh, man.
Well, okay.
I'm not going to lie.
I'm lucky enough to have played.
Were they looking very casual, Adam?
Yeah.
Hey, hey, Matt, stop being so casual.
This was my mom's boyfriend back in the day.
He was an Italian guy.
He was getting into hockey.
He's like, Matt, stop being so casual.
His name was Bibbity Bobbity.
Yeah.
He was a very, very funny guy.
Very funny guy.
But when the Justin Hall trip happened, we were all screaming.
And then we saw the replay and we're like, oh, yeah.
That was definitely a penalty on Kucherov.
The ref really has no choice but to call.
There was only four penalties called total last night.
The Leafs killed it off, and I thought, okay, it's 1-1.
You just killed a major penalty, or not a major penalty,
but a penalty at a major point in the game,
and you didn't allow a goal in the last two minutes of the period.
Hooray!
That's a decent little end to a period.
The bar is so low.
It is just beneath the Earth's crust.
But hey, listen, we got to take our victories where they come, right?
Yeah.
The first four games of the series.
So, Michael Yismont in the second period, who has not played game one, he was injured, comes off the wing about four and a half minutes in and scores a goal that you know that Sergei Samsonov would like to have back.
Now, Steve, what do you always say about Sergei?
Freaking Ilya Samsonov.
Oh, man.
Man, we got to start a charity drive for that.
When you're like, Steve, what do you always say?
I was going to say, then it's Ilya.
And it's not goaltender 10 the goal.
it's where they are in terms of where the posts are.
That was a post school.
He was swimming last night.
But I think there's room for more than one person to be wrong at once.
And I think that was Samsonov not stopping a shot that he should have stopped.
And it was also Mikey Aismont stopping mid-stride,
pouring kerosene and gasoline all over Justin Hall,
lighting a match and setting him on actual fire
before shooting it into the net.
I mean, he looked sub-National Hockey League on that play.
Yeah.
So that's now the second goal he's been on the ice for
just in this game.
And don't worry, I have the Sportsnet stats stuff
to wrap it all up at the end of the game because it's ugly.
Kerfoot then later on is, again, having a bad night.
And this is what drives Leafs fans nuts about Kerfoot
is you know he has the talent, you know he has the speed,
and then he does stuff like this.
fires the puck completely not even really under that much pressure just fires it into the crowd
in the defensive zone looks at his glove after which just made me go oh okay i think they might
lose so it's a delay of gain penalty and you know what a lot wrote on it but what i loved about it
was we haven't seen sometimes we've seen keith holding marner back from the penalty kill to save
him from from it he sent uh marner achari out there right away you knew it was serious well
Well, because Kerfoot's a penalty killer, right?
So you got to get it done.
Also, Mitch Marner's their best penalty killer.
Yeah, easily.
Leafs get some good chances on the PK because Marner's playing on it.
But nothing comes out of it.
And at the end of the period, this is sort of where the referee discussion comes in.
And I think we should sort of mention this.
And Jesse, I'm going to send this over to you because there is a freeze frame I want you to grab from it.
This is where Pat Maroon hits Mark Giordano towards the boards.
Now, I saw the clips today, the TNT panels like Dutch's playoff hockey.
I got to tell you, we had a great view of it.
It didn't look like it because what it looked like to me was Gio had moved the puck, was going to move the puck the entire time, and Maroon had more than enough time not to hit him.
And the other thing that bugged me about this hit, it's not necessarily if he had just hit him gently, it would have been one thing.
But this was like, I'm going to crush you, and I'm going to use my hands.
And that drives me nuts.
When you get your hands up, use your shoulder.
Can I take the opportunity to say something that people say to me all the time?
Have you never played hockey?
Oh, he turned.
That's what I kept hearing.
Giordano turned.
Well, he's on skates, you see.
And if you push a guy who's on skates a certain way, he turns, you see.
It's a rather slippery surface, you see, you understand.
It's actually, it's what it is.
It's hardened water.
What do they call it?
Ice.
Really?
Is how it fucking works.
Interesting.
And this, like, I hate to say it, Maroon has a point
because that's checking from behind.
Was he called for checking from behind?
No, he's called for roughing.
Right, so it's not a penalty.
Let me go.
This is exactly the thing that we had with Kael McCarr.
It's not a penalty.
Let me go.
Roughing, what?
I punched him in the face?
No, I didn't punch him in the face, did I?
All right, let me go.
Why wasn't that called a five-minute for checking from behind
and then reviewed?
yeah that was that was the correct call if the referees were doing their job you do five minutes
and then you just go to the video review either you either call two or what you do whatever you
want there now and if you decide it's two you decide it's two but don't make shit up and the
reason that you don't put your hands up in a hit and the reason that you don't try not to hit from
behind both of those things combined for giordano to be lying laid out on the ice probably hurting
anyway uh he's probably hurt already and maroon tries to draw the fight out of matthew well and
And this is the thing that pissed everybody off.
And this is where we do have to have the referee discussion.
The ref looks at Giordano's body on the ice and goes, shrugs.
And that's what I wanted you to pull up.
You can probably pull these.
You can see the shrug.
If you know what, Jesse, if you just play it full and don't put it on screen yet.
So just watch the referee shrug.
The referee shrugged after the hit, guys.
He puts up his hand.
He goes, what?
Yeah.
So I got to take issue with something that was said yesterday,
and this will be the end of it when it comes to the calls.
We do have to talk about it, though.
It happened in the game.
No, I know.
But we know the trips, the Marner trip that was missed,
the O'Reilly trip that was missed.
I brought this up in the LFR video.
Dave Jackson, who you've mentioned several times.
ESPN.
I don't want to criticize him too much
because he's the only official who speaks, basically.
He's not a current official.
No, no, he's a former.
he's there he's there he's the referee for espn yeah he explains why they make the calls so but
he's not an official he speaks he's a media member yes well but he's the guy with it's like an nhl
player who's now on a panel right it's the same thing yeah but you're giving credit to guys who
are not it shouldn't be getting credit okay well anyway he gave an interview to his colleague then
greg washinsky and yeah that's what it is so it's a little different because this happened at the
end of the second period he's specifically referring to overtime and missed calls in
overtime but this is the excerpt that i pulled that drove me nuts uh when an obvious penalty
isn't called in overtime jackson says the referee is just as upset as you are you're not going to
intentionally miss an obvious penalty in overtime it is so easy to call a penalty that should be
called and know you'll be supported by the league for making the call jackson said those calls are
not ignored they are missed and no one feels any worse than the referee who misses them
it's just not true it's just not true dave um penalties do get missed i don't think anyone
is people expect that they're human beings yeah like anyone who expects the ref to get
absolutely everything is being unreasonable you got to get the gimmies you got to get the ones
where the player possessing the puck um gets tripped or whatever and that one where the ref
sees it and shrugs that's i'm sorry that's someone who doesn't know what they're doing
they saw it they didn't ignore it or sorry they they didn't miss it yeah they did ignore it
they saw it he was looking at it the whole time by the way so i know so we're talking about you
know uh there's a lot of narrative around different teams the leafs at the forefront uh buckling in
these big moments i'm sorry the officiating crew last night buckled under the pressure of the
moment they saw it they didn't know what to do with it they fucked it up i don't like the narrative
that the officials are infallible you know and that they're always trying to do the right thing
in that they don't also have the natural human things
like being nervous and pressure and big moments
and being on TV.
Why can't we ever have those conversations
that these are just people
and that sometimes they fuck up,
but we always have to act like,
no, they didn't fuck up.
There was a reason why they missed that call.
They're trying their best, blah, blah, blah.
But they can also just look at a hit
and not call it because he's nervous
and doesn't want to make a call.
and that's the wrong thing no and now everyone's on that situation and by the way patrick maroon
who by the way got the roughing penalty for trying to punch austin matthews no well so
or trying to nhl.com listed it as against mark giordano so it's a made-up call yeah completely
made up because the roughing was against matthews yeah he went back and was like oh i should have
called that yeah and so they called it roughing which is something he did against mark giordano
which is not something he did they showed they showed the replay steve i'm not kidding like
10 times in a row
from 40 different angles
in the arena.
So the fans are like
losing their minds.
And then you can see
the ref go,
well, I guess they're...
You could see them
look up at it.
You don't want to tell me
that instant replay
doesn't exist.
It does.
For two-minute penalties.
It absolutely does.
There was no penalty
on the play.
At the end of the second period,
the refs got booed
off the ice.
We were all booing them.
Yeah.
And that's when I got
really loud.
You get booed
when you do a bad job.
I don't know.
Yeah.
I don't know
what you're expecting.
So as we, we're going to move on from this.
Yep.
Yep.
Now, third period, Lightning do what they need to.
They kill off that Maroon penalty because that happened right at the end of the second period.
So the Leafs are starting the third with two minutes on the power play.
There was one more thing I wanted to say about Maroon.
Hit it.
Hit it.
He is Michael Bunting with a resume.
Yeah, it rings.
Please someone explain the difference between him and Michael Bunting.
He yells and screams and complains about everything.
screams fuck you at the officials over and over again fuck you at the officials over and over and
over again he was at an absolute uh fucking crazy person in game six against colorado last year he
does this every game every whistle he's michael bunting with a resume i'm struggling to see the
difference between the two other than maroon is a little older and has won some things yes
I understand that difference
But shift to shift
His relationship to the refs is much different than Bunting's
Is what you're saying
How come he treats them just as poorly
If not worse
I don't understand
Couple cups you know
You get some respect from the refs
It's fucking garbage
His name is Big Rig
I like being pals with Big Rig
I don't get it
Can I quote Steve Dangle
I think you made a great point
What's the difference between
that hit and Kyle Clifford's hit
from last year. Explain it to me like I'm five.
You said it. I was like, yeah.
Literally, what's the difference?
Explain it to me. And we agree
that the Clifford hit is shit. Oh, yeah.
It was shit. That was five
in a game plus two games.
That's a two
minute minor. Explain it to me like I'm
five.
All right. Let's keep
going. Lightning kill off the Maroon
penalty to kick off the third period. The Leafs do get
some chances on this but uh like really that was a good power play for them yeah the officiating is
not the reason the leafs lost they had a good power play they had honestly i thought outside
of game two which obviously game one was a wash for the leafs game two was a wash for the lightning
um out of games three four and five the leafs had way more good chances in game five than they did
three or four yeah i thought but it's kind of funny that we had that little narrative about
vasilevsky not being able to um stop shots from distance and the leafs had a lot of chances in
close it's almost like the lightning baited them into it like they wouldn't be able to resist and
vasilevsky came up huge but i highly doubt making your all-world goaltender make all-world saves is
baked into the cake but i don't know maybe it is sometimes you i i wish uh the narratives would
just go away and people would shut up so that the lightning weren't like all uh they're taken
aback by like hey everybody's criticizing our goalie let's go out and do something it'd be
nice if the media didn't make out a whole storyline so then the lightning didn't tighten up and then
the Leafs could have just kept exploiting that yeah i'm like shut up everybody we know it's a
law i will say this i will say this the fans do drive the media narrative a lot of yeah oh yeah
so and i'll give you an example cadre cadre with the drawing calls you you think a bunch of
newspaper writers because this was a few years ago you think they're like this kid's penalty
differential is off the hook yeah i don't think that was going on in the rooms of the toronto star
and son. No, the fans created Bob
Ross. Yeah. They created
Nazem Kadri, Bob Ross.
I feel you looking at
me, Jesse. Maybe.
And then he wore it as a fucking Halloween
costume. It'd be better if we all just shut
up sometimes. Let the players play.
As soon as they mentioned bunting on Hockey Night
in Canada, drawing the most penalties in the league or
wherever he was at, it was over.
So then we get to the third.
The Leafs have a good power play, but
they kill off. And then Nick Paul, who ate the Leafs
alive last year in the playoffs uh gets his first goal of the series they go up three to one with
11 53 remaining and listen i i i he was whipping boy all year so i'm attempting not to go this
direction but it's unavoidable in this series who was on defense when nick paul scored your down
owen hall it was an unfortunate deflection from zach aston reese but we'll get into some stats
that are not unfortunate they're very real next like you're on home ice there i do have one person
in particular i blame from this game you're on home ice that's your fourth line and your third
pair in the d zone sheldon what the fuck are you doing why jesse and i also noticed too that geo
and hall are out there a lot when matthews is and i'm like why is why are they out there with those
guys they can move the puck uh really well and you would assume the leafs are going to be in the
offensive zone more when that okay so you can shelter them a little bit yeah so i don't i don't
hate that like i want i want brody and mccabe out there with the lines you're a little less
sure about yeah um i'm cool with that and then uh you got riley shen but you got to have brody
mccabe out there with the fourth line i uh don't disagree um did zach asterisks get an assist on
that play fuck with his fucking back kick to right to nick paul that was a bad giveaway man a bad
shift too because he had that weak ass sort of hit that he his upper body wanted fit to finish
the check and his lower body didn't yeah i don't know if you saw that from where you were oh yeah
but it was um great leafs pull the goalie with five minutes to go they get in tight with vasilevsky
and lo and behold they score it's crazy when you put a little pressure on him what can happen
now vasilevsky made some unbelievable stops in this game and i i think we should we should
mention that there were the least could have easily had this tied before that his best game
the series he's amazing you said this is the game where the Leafs had the most chances the game
could have just been completely different we could be talking about Leafs in the second round if
Mitch Marner makes a better play on a breakaway and he hits up he hits the post and the puck
maybe dings into the net instead of straight out you know like those two instances could have just
been goals for the Leafs and all of a sudden they're in the second round Tavares had a couple
tap-ins but Tampa did a good job of tying up his stick a couple times yeah yeah so listen this isn't
like there's a lot of chance this isn't an all hope is lost episode right sorry this is not an
all hope is lost not an all hope is lost episode um because it's not an all hope is lost series
now the leafs uh uh they did score then then sim sonoff was on the ice for a little bit and then
he was off the ice they can't make it happen in the last two minutes and then tamp obviously with
seconds to go pots the fourth goal now here's some thoughts um towards uh you know after this
game so justin hall just in this series alone series has gone five games he uh uh he is a minus
seven and here's where it gets worse sports net stats tweeted this out at the start of the game
justin hall has been on the ice for 14 goals against that's the most by any maple leafs player
in a single playoff series over the past decade then they updated that later in the game five and
he said uh now he has been on uh sorry it was 13 of 14 sorry 13 of 18 to start so the 18 goals
scored against the leafs hall for in this series had been on the ice for 13 of them and now of the
19 goals scored against he has been on the ice for 14 which is 73.7 percent so now it's 14 of 20
because i guess the empty net goal wasn't counted in that stat oh okay and he was on the ice you
You had the minus game one stats, which I think it's fair.
I think it's fair because game one, the game got away from the Leafs.
He was on the ice for six goals.
That's fair.
That's like an all-timer, like, worst game of your career.
So if we take out, like, the worst game of his career in game one
where not a single player on the ice looked any good,
he's still been on the ice game two to five for eight out of 13.
Eight out of 13 is rough.
He can't play.
Here's Sheldon Keefe on it.
He cannot play.
Well, here's what Sheldon had to say when they asked him about it.
I would ask if he's out there by himself when he gets scored on.
The answer on that would be no.
It's him or you, Sheldon.
It's him or you.
It's one of you, and I think, frankly, it's you.
He's been outcoached in this series.
The team is fortunate that they're up 3-2.
Good on him and the coaching staff for getting them in the mindset
to be up 3-2 to come back in Game 3.
to come back in game four,
but, Sheldon, you're getting your fucking teeth kicked in,
and part of it is your loyalty to this player.
Kevin Pappetti had the stat.
Hall's expected goal percentage when he's on the ice is around 33%.
Giordano's is not much better at 38%.
It's still better.
So as bad as Giordano's been, Hall's been worse.
I think the only person worse than Hall in that stat was Conf.
Well, yeah, and, I mean, fourth-line center in a defensive role.
Yeah.
Makes sense.
yeah it does make sense uh whereas i feel like john cooper's just targeting this pair and
completely doing whatever he wants against that pair and you know if the argument is giordano is
as bad as hall uh here's what it comes down to they have lilligran they have they don't have
a replacement a left-handed replacement for giordano people have been yelling and screaming
for Gustafson.
If I'm not mistaken,
he's still injured.
And if he's not still injured,
he's not as good as Lilligren.
I think Lilligren's a better two-way player.
Now, can Lilligren...
Did he kill penalties for the Marlies?
That's the thing, right?
He killed penalties for the Leafs!
You also have other defensemen
that can kill penalties.
Like, Justin Hall's not so necessary
that they need to keep him in the lineup.
And the whole, yeah, army,
it didn't last very long.
It's hard!
It was about a 24-hour army
that kind of fizzled out
and got demolished by Genghis Khan, you know?
So let's say the series goes seven, all right?
So we're talking game six, game seven.
How many penalties total do we expect the Leafs to kill?
A lot.
Like a decent amount.
Four, five.
Game six and game seven, four maximum.
Four, yeah.
Four maximum.
So yeah, the penalty kill isn't enough reason
to keep Justin Hall alive, I think is the point
that we're getting to.
and i it's just at a point where you need to try something new one of the narratives for the entire
second half of the leaf season was that they had 46 defensemen on the roster they have so many guys
utilize that try something new it should be a hauls out uh lilligran's in maybe laughs out
bunting's in bunting needs to be back in laughter yeah hey we couldn't get it done in game five
Let's just try something new.
We tried the thing where we're going to run it back with the team that won three in a row.
That didn't work.
Try something new.
I have a thought.
What if you went 11-7?
You found Bunting.
You got Bunting into the lineup, Lafferty out, and then maybe even Aston Reese, who wasn't great, takes a seat.
And then you've got—you can put Hall out there just for shorthanded situations, Sheldon.
I don't hate it.
For your point, there's proof of concept.
The Edmonds and Oilers have been so successful at 11-7.
They look better as 11-7 as a group.
But you only can play Hall in the shorthanded.
Sure.
Yeah.
On the road.
11-7 is great.
On the road, I kind of think it makes sense.
Yeah.
100%.
Because what is your fourth line other than a target?
It's just a target, man.
And Tampa's fourth line has not been great, actually.
So I'm not necessarily worried about that matchup.
11-7 might be the way to go.
Bunting on the fourth line, too, or Bunting working with Conf or any of those guys.
Whoever's going to play that, you know, I think that can work.
You ever realize you're wrong immediately?
Well, last night I was like, man, yeah, Bunting should be in.
So as soon as Matthew Nyes went down with an injury and he did come back,
I was like, imagine being able to just pull Michael Bunting out of your hat right now.
And you can't because he's sitting.
Because you have a fourth line playing six minutes.
Yep.
And I understand internal accountability.
For fuck's sake, you're trying to win a series.
Yep.
And like here, we're going a little doom and gloom.
And I do want to set off some alarm bells.
But before I do that, J Rose Hill, he's on Twitter.
He made a great point.
Okay.
So the Leafs didn't win four straight against Tampa.
And I didn't think about it that way.
Like had the Leafs closed out the series last night,
they would have won four straight against Tampa.
That rarely happens.
Gentlemen sweep.
It does not happen.
Yeah.
Gentlemen sweep.
I mean, it doesn't happen.
Not in the fucking playoffs.
Not even Boston did that against Florida.
They're going back for game six.
Yeah, so I made that joke in the LFR.
I'm like, oh man, Atlantic team who had the regular season advantage
over the Atlantic team that they're playing
had an opportunity to finish their series in game five at home
and they blew it and now they're heading back to Florida.
But enough about the Boston Bruins.
It's an almost identical situation.
There was an anniversary over the last couple days.
i'm not sure i think it was yesterday and they showed the cover of a newspaper from vancouver
and it said dragon slayer and it was a picture of a canucks glove going through the chicago
blackhawks logo because in 2011 the vancouver canucks finally beat the team that tortured them
year after year after year in the Chicago Blackhawks.
Alex Burrow's overtime goal, they call Dragon Slayer.
That's how it's remembered.
That's how it's revered.
That's how it's loved in that fan base.
Do you remember how that series played out?
No.
Canucks game one.
I know the Canucks didn't win.
Well, not the Stanley Cup final.
They didn't win the cup.
They won that series.
Yeah, they won the series.
I know in the end they didn't win the cup.
here's how dragon slayer plays out okay canucks i'm doing this from memory i don't even need to
look it up canucks game one yeah canucks game two canucks game three david boland returns from
injury blackhawks game four blackhawks game five blackhawks game six the canucks need overtime of
game seven as i believe the president's trophy winners wow against the eight seed chicago
blackhawks to advance to just to advance to the second round and not fuck up colossally in the
first round and it's remembered as dragon slayer and they were the first seed win and i promise we
forget about everything well for sure and win and i promise we forget about everything like that is
that's a crazy way to remember what could have been what was a goal away from being the most
embarrassing playoff loss in franchise history no you forget when you get to these moments in
game five and the Leafs don't pull pull out the victory you forget it requires to lose two games
to win it in six like go back to where you were at the beginning of the series and if you predicted
Leafs in six you are here yeah you are here at the moment that's what I did so I did I said six
it's not time to panic yeah because they what did you think they weren't gonna lose the two games to
get to the six games yeah you thought they were gonna win four games but never lose the two like
come on and and you can be like well i don't love the way that they're playing and well i don't love
some of the roster decisions and yeah man like you're not always gonna love it all it's game
six and they still have a 3-2 series lead oh but it's in tampa where they won both games yeah they
won both games well they got outplayed well what if they don't this time you're not gonna get
outplayed every road game like all i'm saying listen i think the 2011 canucks are a decent
team to bring up because you talk about a fan base with a little bit of a damaged psyche
like what what do you think that canucks fans went into game seven thinking they were going to win it
after what they saw in games four, five, and six.
I highly, highly doubt it.
Now, here's the epiphany I had this morning, though.
I sort of had it right before I went to sleep.
I was reading the messages from people,
my Instagram messages, Twitter DMs.
I was reading Twitter mentions,
some stuff on Discord, some stuff on Reddit.
We still got potentially two games left here.
okay if they lose it'll be in seven that's the way it has to break down
people come to the show and people come to my channel for the LFR videos
to see how I feel and I think to see if it matches how they feel and I think my anger
makes a lot of people feel better and they are sort of like well he said it and now i don't have
to be angry because he said it and they're able to go about their day and as i was reading the
messages from leaf fans angry about the game five loss worried that they're gonna fuck up game six
and worried that they're gonna lose in game seven as i was reading those messages i was like i think
this is the first year in 16 years of making videos i won't be able to match their anger
i won't be able to do if if for this one in particular game for no for game seven if it
gets to seven why are we and they lose but are you jumping ahead i am jumping ahead but it's
bubbling and remember if we get there listen erase this from your memory if they win game
six or game seven it doesn't matter okay but it's bubbling i'm not going to be able to match this
fan base's anger with this team because if they lose the next two games they're going to lose
people forever like they're i i don't think it'll be blow a gasket time i i don't think it will be
a repeat of what happened
when the Leafs blew it against the Habs in
2021 I think there are people
who are going to say ah fuck
this and they're not going to buy the merch
they're not going to go to the games and there's
a backlog of fans man that are going to buy
your big goofy hat Jesse I don't know what you're talking about
and the chain that I saw
actually that's my hat because it fits my head
thank you very much
yeah it's my normal hat size
there are
I think a lot of people who are just going to
go all right that's it because it's not by losing it's adam doing great and then losing annually do
you think after what was that like five five seven minutes that we were just talking about how hey
you gotta lose two to get to six everything's kind of fine you think it's time to bring up
losing yes i do you know what i get i get where steve's coming from it's time to have a losing
game seven because it's on everybody's mind to pretend that people aren't talking about it
thinking about it yeah 100 it's coming it's don't look up vice president you're literally don't look
up you don't look up and steve right now right it's like it's what do you mean the asteroid don't
even don't look up and i think i think at the end of the day here's here's what i think guys
the leafs are gonna win they're gonna win this series um i understand why you would be mad if
they lost game seven but they're winning guys they're winning this is going to happen and i'm
a big big believer they're going to make this happen let's leave it there we're going to be
back sunday after the game i was hoping today would be a celebratory episode but maybe sunday
can be okay play play your best lineup when you have a we actually have to get to dave if we don't
get to dave he's got to go to meeting goal scorer sitting on your bench play them do that oh i see
what you're saying i thought you meant like give me your whole lineup i was like jesse we don't
of time i like that play michael bunting you're right let's get into dave you can bet that with
david bastel brought to you by sports interaction get in the action and make a play 19 plus please
play responsibly dave bastel now dave yep we're sorry okay uh the winnipeg jets eliminated
yesterday dave is from winnipeg he's a jet season ticket holder he's a bomber season ticket holder
too even though he lives in toronto um this is weird it's a man who candidate yeah this is mayoral
candidate for sure and dave i i'd love to run yes dave also loves the new york jets uh so we'll talk
about that in a second but dave it was weird we just want to know before we get into the odds of
the leafs lightning tomorrow night in uh in tampa uh how are you um i'm feeling more pissed off than
rick bonus in my head okay but i'm not really yeah so like i i could not salute a coach more
than what rick bonus said and if you if you didn't hear about oh we're gonna play it coming up we're
playing kind of coming up yeah yeah do yourselves a favor because um so well said and um and the
truth right it's not the sugarcoating bs that we just come to custom it's the team quit yesterday
And so did I
I cancelled it after the second period
Because I got stuff to do in the morning
I'm up at 6
And if you guys are going to play like a-holes
Then I don't need to watch this crap
So that's basically what I did
And yeah
It's really disappointing
As a real fan
A real fan cares enough to check out
And protect their mental health
Yeah
Well said Wild
So that they can come back and cheer harder
or another. That's right.
We've got to reserve our strength. So Dave,
Tampa tomorrow night. Leafs,
Tampa Bay, obviously
this is game six. What are we looking at
odds-wise right now? Who's the favorite to win
this game? Well, you know what?
It's funny you say that because for the first time in this
series, the Tampa Bay Lightning are actually
favorites in an individual game
to win. I am going to fight
you. It's quite
I don't make these odds, Dangle.
You're the
What's the base of these odds, Dave Bastl?
Dave, you don't set every odd for sports interaction.
It's slight favorites.
Slight favorites.
Tampa Bay, a 1.86.
Toronto, 1.96.
Over-under is still 6.5, which I'm loving overs in this whole series so far.
But, yeah, that's what it looks like.
Slight favorites to force a game 7,
which obviously would mean Toronto would be the favorites in game 7.
But let's hope for your sake there's no game 7
because I don't think anybody wants to see a Game 7 here in this series.
Yeah, that's something that we want to avoid desperately.
If you make the Leafs favorites in Game 7, you specifically, Dave.
Oh, no.
You're not getting anything for Christmas.
So far away, you've already made this decision.
He gives good gifts.
He gives good gifts.
You want to be in on that.
You want to be in on the Steve gift giving.
No one gives better gifts than Jesse on this panel.
I'm not going to lie.
Jesse's the best gift giver.
Oh, yeah, I appreciate that.
Without question.
I think Saturday is an opportunity to get some great value on the Leafs.
They're underdogs.
There you go.
Almost two times your money.
There you go.
Positivity.
Now, Dave, I'm going to ask you about your other Jets.
Yes.
Obviously, Aaron, we haven't had a chance to even talk about Aaron Rodgers,
but I do want to take the moment to talk about it.
Aaron Rodgers, what has he done to the odds of the Jets even making the playoffs?
Forget the Super Bowl odds.
Yeah, it basically slashed them in half.
Okay.
And when you look at this roster, and I'll do it really quick,
this is a top-10 defense.
This is a very strong offense.
They were missing one piece, and they traded for that one piece.
Now, there's still gas in that tank, in my opinion, with Aaron Rodgers.
I would have loved to have gotten Aaron Rodgers four years ago,
but I think there's still gas in that tank.
And with all the weapons he has on offense,
I have them pegged for number two in the division.
I have them making the playoffs.
And then, as you guys know, I think anything happens in the postseason, right?
The only reason I peg them above Miami is because of the quarterback position.
That's the only thing, because I'm not sure how long Tua could actually last
or if he could actually play a full season.
Miami's loaded.
There should be three playoff teams in that East division
with the Buffalo Bills being the headliner,
and hopefully they do something, too, because I know Bills Nation's out there.
How do you feel about the Pittsburgh Steelers trading up to November 14th
and selecting Broderick Jones?
Yeah, you know what?
That may have been even more.
like like the jets kind of gave up so i started flipping back and forth right yeah but when i saw
that happen and and new england right there yeah making that trade making i'm editing myself
making that trade and just kind of you know gaining what they wanted but still screwing
another team like the jets like they've done the last couple decades uh i was extremely pissed off
the Steelers got themselves a front line offensive tackle that should be part of that
offensive line the next decade that's how good Broderick Jones is yeah baby just finally listen
something's going the Steelers way it's been a rough couple of years not gonna lie uh so Dave
thanks so much man listen we're we're really sorry to see to see the Jets go we're sorry to see you
know game over Winnipeg end after this season as well uh but um listen go Jets go starting next
season uh we're just it's just going to be fascinating especially once the draft of free
agency hits what happens with this team we're going to talk about we're going to talk about
into our next segment here but like this is this is going to be a real reckoning for this team and
i'm kind of curious to see where it goes yeah so am i and uh i'm also kind of curious just to see
did rick bonus just you know get himself uh ejected because he told the truth the truth he
has one year left on his contract by the way one year left but something to think about
have a nice weekend let's talk about a uh second round series when we see it yeah with the leafs
though featuring the leafs that one well that's well that's what i'm referring to because we have
to say it out loud we have to say it out loud it doesn't happen to us much bye guys
so uh jesse i sent you a text it has rick bonas now rick bonas made a lot of headlines if you
haven't heard the jets went down last night we're going to talk a little bit about the game
but i want to bring you back to march 29th march 29th is almost exactly a month ago and by the way
when this episode comes up maybe you're listening to this on saturday and it's april 29th the
playoffs operate on covid time where i don't know how long anything takes yeah it's weird isn't it
march 29th was easily two months ago yeah it was less than a month ago yeah that doesn't make
playoffs haven't even been on for like two weeks yet are you joking no i haven't you made that up
oh my god it's been like a week and a half yeah how is that possible i know i know it's wild oh
my god so this is what rick bonus had to say about the jets a month and a half ago one of our players
um is hurting us um you know some of these guys think they're giving us everything in their tank
they're dreaming um so we got a lot of guys in there giving us everything they can and we just
seen a few more guys to jump on board it's not over we're still in eighth spot and uh we're
gonna find out what we're made of over the next little while the incons last sorry go ahead well
we talked about that clip when it happened the the licking the inside of his cheek thing like
he's the fucking joker he is so mad and i can't imagine what he said in the room so the reason i
play that clip is because the jets found out what they were made of in this series uh they were
eliminated from the playoffs and the tough part about this game specifically and dave mentioned
it in the in the segment just before this um they were never in it they dropped a goal in the first
and then three more in the second and it wasn't until kyle connor scores like midway through the
third that they're even on the board in the game it looked like vegas was going to get a shutout
i want to read you ken weeb uh from sportsnet.ca i want to read read his his lead here uh we call
it weebs lead that's what we should call it uh i don't think that's what we call it he says
it's time to break up the band the lead singer wants a raise the drummer wants a bigger profile
that is only available in the bigger market the lead guitarist isn't happy and the basis is ready
to record a solo album see these are the basis yeah okay so these are some of the issues that
could cause a band uh to search for alternatives uh not all the aforementioned reasons apply for
the Winnipeg Jets core four but one thing is clear the music doesn't sound as sweet as it
once did and it's time to make bold and necessary changes the guy that covers them every day of the
year now let's hear that that was it was pretty much unanimous all the Jets fans I was talking
to last night Jesse I'm going to send you the clip let's hear what Rick Bones had to say last
night 52 total seconds of a press conference so this is the whole thing yeah i mean it's
not very long is it not very long and i think uh well worth the listen
you stopped talking when it wasn't ready i have time to clean my glasses no
that is what i will do no you know what jesse you're gonna tee it up a little closer to what
i'm gonna and this is what rick boness had to say
here we go overall thoughts on that one overall thoughts i'm so disappointed and disgusted right
now that's my thoughts where does the disgust come from pardon me where does the disgust come from
no pushback but it's the same crap we saw in february it was that's why we so as soon as we
were challenging for first place and teams are coming after us we had no pushback this series
we had no pushback there are better players are so much better than ours it's not even close
It looks like you've been holding these feelings on for a bit.
Is it just out of tonight's game or finally wanting to release that?
It started back in January and February.
What is it about this team's leadership core that are the top end players?
We've talked all the time.
We've got to push back.
There's got to be a push back.
There's got to be pride.
You've got to be able to push back when things aren't going your way.
We had no push back.
They're better players.
They're so much better than ours tonight.
They deserve to win.
They were the better team in the regular season.
They were the better team in this series.
Anything else?
Good.
Thanks.
To add more context to that situation,
let me add more context to that situation.
Sportsnet stats, after leading the Western Conference
on January 18th with 59 points,
the Jets went 18-22-2.
They were 25th in the NHL from January 18th onwards,
barely snuck in.
Wow.
Wow.
Dude, that is a...
I know they're probably going to blow this court of smithereens.
But remember, the Jets have to operate differently than a lot of NHL teams.
They struggle to recruit guys that they haven't drafted.
And even some of the ones they do draft, they end up trading line A for PLD,
who is forcing his way to Montreal in what is going to be a shit heap of a trade.
I'm going to read you the rumors about that in a second.
So we are coming back.
So, most other teams, I think, would blow it to smithereens.
But the question that Dave had earlier, like, did Rick Bonas just get himself fired?
That seems like a guy who hates his job.
Like, I'm not saying he hates being an NHL coach.
I'm saying he hates these guys.
These guys make his life miserable.
these guys can't hack it according to rick bonus usually it's a coach coddling his players and we
just didn't have it and and they will uh revert to praising the team that beat them this is bonus
saying a little nicer than i'm about to say it fuck these guys these guys stink he didn't give
them the the the benefit of the doubt with well we were down shifley and we were down eelers and
we were down morrissey they're big guys folded like a cheap suit and he was red hot vibrating
pissed about it for three years now we've talked about the winnipeg jets and we've talked about
the the the warning signs coming out of the dressing room yeah for three years we've talked
about it you know initially jets fans gave us a lot of shit about it and i get it because you're
fan of the jets um you don't want that to be true of your team look at look at how leaf fans react
when you say that they're soft but i gotta say this guys the jets are well past having a problem
here yeah this is now a culture and i don't know who the problem is i don't even know really what
the problem is other than they're not showing up in the big moments according to their head coach
But I do know this.
They had a head coach quit on him who immediately went.
He quit mid-season and said, I need a break,
and then was immediately back coaching within six months.
Then the coach that they had fill in for him, well, he wasn't good enough.
And Pomo seems to be having a great time.
Nothing but praise for his guys after their Game 5 win in Boston.
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
absolutely uh and then but the guy that replaced paul maurice no longer there adam lowry i think
yeah no dave dave lowry definitely not adam lowry oh adam lowry my bad and and then you got uh and
then you got uh rick boness and after they they swung and missed on barry trotz and i think we've
had there are a bit there have been members of the media that have spoken about the fact that
this dressing room is quote-unquote dysfunctional i mean you bring it all the way back to you know
the joke that you made about you know back on track suit of andrew kane and dustin bufflin
bufflin is also somebody who just said i don't want to be here anymore yeah he just flat out
was like i'm not coming i'm just not playing hockey that was a medical thing but again it was
a weird breakdown in communication with the team yeah so i don't know what the problem is
but whatever it is you know when shifley sits up there last year and says i i need to know what
the direction this team is remember his eyes just popped out of his head there was like a good three
weeks where shifley was like trading he was gone yeah and they tried to trade blake wheeler and
couldn't and that ship sale i know they need to do something but you have to assume that if blake
wheeler is the guy you're trying to trade then he's a part of your perceived problem like and
you can't get rid of him i just don't think like you can trade him you can trade anybody but i just
don't see you getting value that's it's an untradeable contract when he makes 8.25 for
uh all of next season it's just that okay so they're gonna have to say it's untradeable he's
he's probably gonna get traded but there's there's got to be a lot of retention there there's got to
be you're adding the assets to get rid of this player if you want and he makes 8.25 in actual
money too it's not just the cap it oh and it's all base oh that's so shit i think like adam it's
it's time to blow up the core like i don't understand how you can it's been three years
of this there's no way you run it back with these individuals and i'm waiting for the stories to
come out because we haven't had the piece in the athletic the piece on sports michael russo like
deep dive right i'm waiting for that out of the winnipeg reporters where it's like this is what
was happening in the dressing room and now we get a sneak peek into why this isn't working and then
they all get traded sort of surprising that we haven't i think they're waiting for them to leave
town that's usually how it goes like with the nick nurse situation yeah the day after nick
nurse is fired there's like 80 articles by all the raptors writers be like this is what was
actually going on and it wasn't pretty you know so i think once they're traded we'll get all those
stories coming out uh pierre luke dubois and the montreal canadians were immediately linked
afterwards obviously free just said on the 32 thoughts pod that um that he said if there was
any doubt about this core this is a race is that doubt and then Merrick goes on to say Pierre-Luc
Dubois is fascinating to me I look at the obvious target which is the Montreal Canadiens although
I'm led to believe there are several other teams that are that he's interested in going to but we
all remember the comments at the draft preferred destination is Montreal um and uh basically it
sort of starts and ends I guess there was some sort of potential move involving Kirby Doc that
never materialized um but I think uh I think it is going to be fascinating to see the return on
that because Montreal is in the driver's seat even apparently teams were told non-Montreal teams were
told if they were interested in Pierre-Luc Dubois that they should be aware that he's interested in
Montreal first and that's that's what he wants if I'm Kevin Chevalier there's not a fucking chance
I trade that guy to Montreal not a chance go fuck yourself he basically wanted out from the moment
he got there yeah no that's not fair to jets fans it's just not fair to the city it's not
he played well uh but so like he controls it so they're gonna give him his qualifying offer
and he's gonna sign it and i trade you to fucking madagascar and uh and someone's gonna want his
services for a year you know what i mean um and if he eventually finds his way to montreal great
i'm not giving you what you want yeah you have no reason to there's absolutely no obligation
no montreal has all the all the cards here i'm not giving you what you want you
actual con man uh i'm trading you to anaheim i'll trade you to i'll trade you
anywhere about montreal anywhere about montreal i'll trade you to ottawa in terms i'll trade you
as close to them as possible
so that you have to play against them.
Why would any team trade for his RFA rights
if they know he's not going to sign with them?
Well, he is going to sign.
But as soon as he goes to UFA,
he's going to Montreal.
So why would anybody trade for him?
It would have to be a contender who's like,
okay, we need one more center for this season.
Listen, odds are my scenario of minor revenge
does not happen.
But like, listen, Habs fans,
If you're excited about Pierre-Luc Dubois, I get it.
He's a good player, and he wants to play there.
I'm not expecting Habs fans to dislike the guy.
Anybody else, I don't know how you cheer for this person.
How do you cheer for this person?
So here's the thing, right?
He said the reason that things didn't work out in Columbus
was because he wanted out of Columbus.
He got traded out of Columbus.
Now he wants out of Winnipeg after he got his wish to get traded.
I think he would have wanted to go somewhere else other than Winnipeg,
I think is what he's saying.
But I look at this, okay?
So Pierre-Luc Dubois had 27 goals and 36 assists.
Michael Bunting had 23 goals and 26 assists.
That's a 10-point spread between the two of them.
And I know Pierre-Luc Dubois is a centerman.
He's a centerman.
But can you imagine, with the star power the Leafs have,
a 60-point player making as many demands as this guy is?
Well, like, but, I mean, you mentioned the Leafs.
Like, they could use a player like Pierre-Luc Dubois.
Sure they could.
I think most teams could.
Yeah.
If I'm the Jets, I'm trying to find a contender who needs this piece.
Send him there.
And, like, again, listen to what I'm saying.
Like, oh, we're going to get revenge on him by trading him to a contender.
Like, this guy just has Winnipeg completely by the balls.
And I don't know how you cheer for him.
But my question is, why does he have them by the balls?
How does he have them by the balls?
Because that, to me, is a failure on their end.
For the Winnipeg Jets, the trade was not a bad trade for them.
They thought they were good.
For sure.
But what I don't understand is how Winnipeg let it get to this point.
This is squarely on Jets management.
You can't let a 60-point player dick you around like this.
Players don't do this, though.
If I'm the Jets, I don't necessarily anticipate this happening
because this never happens.
It very rarely happens.
If it does, it's very specific case, like what's Adam Fox and Jimmy Vesey and college free agents forcing their way out of a situation.
Not an established NHL player.
This dude's like six years deep in his career.
Well, and the thing with him is there have been questions about motivation.
There have been questions about some other things that I don't doubt that this is a good person.
So I'm not trying to assassinate the character.
I'm trying to say this is in both organizations he's been a part of,
which have been small market organizations.
He has been the guy that has been pushing for his way out.
He pushed his way out of Columbus.
He's trying to push.
He can deny on his live streams all he wants, like he did last summer,
that he didn't want to go to Montreal.
Guys, the trade was almost done.
He wanted, his agent was like, you're going to Montreal.
Called him and said he was going.
And so let me say this.
Let me say this.
Pierre-Luc Dubois for me
I think is going to be
I hope he goes to Montreal
because you know what going to a big market does
a media heavy market does
it lays bare
all of your imperfections
Austin Matthews
and Mitch Marner regularly
get shish kebabbed in this market
like a what?
they get a nice big old stick through
by the media
you see what I'm saying?
and then they get put on the barbecue and cut
hey let's go they don't show up every game because they make every game show up money
whoa holy shit god that was really loud maddie maddie was like oh you made a good one thank you
and people are driving so listen so so all these in toronto and in montreal
if there was in toronto toronto maple leafs at least and montreal canadians at least
if there was a deep dive to be done they don't fucking wait for the coach to leave town they'll
do it while the coach is right there and then ask him about it and then when they get fired they do
it worse yes oh by the way let me kick your ass out the door do you think that montreal is an easy
place to play if you're you are a french canadian going to the montreal canadians i get why he would
want to be there i get why they would pure pld my man are you sure you're ready for that you
couldn't handle the stage in columbus you couldn't handle the stage in winnipeg you had some good
seasons but your career high is like 63 points you're acting like you're ovechkin you're not
and i i'm i would love to see the montreal media which is what this is what they'll do
i montreal media they they love to fall in love with a french canadian player and when he's not
maurice richard they love to kick his ass out the door ask danny brie about it absolutely tear them
apart i uh like again as a habs fan i totally understand why you'd be excited oh man you're
right to be excited and maybe he comes in and kicks ass yeah but like as a outside sports fan
i'm like oh what a story guy gets absolutely everything he wants and has his way you know
the little guy right yeah and but but like what has he done to deserve it yeah like i know i don't
understand who is this guy now other side of the coin uh rfas have no agency in in the nhl
they have no power they have no negotiating power and he has wielded as much power as any
restricted free agent can and he has played this perfectly and because they have to blow it up
anyway I just I just want to know how older Pierre-Luc Dubois will look back on younger
Pierre-Luc Dubois why do you say that um it just feels like you like you can't tell me
he hasn't somewhat wasted the first half decade of his career why do you say that well because
he just dicked around and got his way out of Columbus and then he's dicking around I mean
he's been a hab for like six months while wearing a jets jersey oh no 12 months yeah draft last year
he was he was convinced he was traded he went to montreal it's ridiculous he was there guys yeah
it's ridiculous what player shows up to the draft i think he was hoping for something so or maybe
it's just fun do you guys know how much his qualifying offer is since i have no idea what
rfs six six million dollars is there a situation where mr shovel day off looks at his balance sheet
and says, I'm not even going to bother tendering this guy.
Well, you got to get assets for him.
Yeah, you have to get assets.
You don't just let him walk?
You don't say, my headache is gone?
No, a lot of teams go, you know what?
Six million bucks is six million bucks,
and I'll take this cap space and use it.
It's Winnipeg.
They struggle to recruit free agents.
Yeah.
So you think even at the $6 million number
and for a guy who doesn't want to play for the team
that he's going to be traded to it's still worth it to retain him for the seventh you might get
isn't that so fucking sad and this is where adam might have a point is that like listen the jets
have to conduct business different than almost every other team and they didn't they doubled
down on a group that i mean i suppose they expected rick bonus to just save the whole
situation he was there to bring in the new culture yeah and for rebuild the culture for
moments it really felt like he did at the beginning of the season i mean i've been saying
about the jets for years like they should be better than they are yeah and every now and then
they show you oh there it is from october to january but they were a paper tiger an absolute
paper tiger and it fucked them like i want to read you i'm sorry go keep going well like there
was a it's easy easier said than done because they were in first place but the second they
dropped to within two or three points of missing the playoffs they should have pulled the shoot
and traded everybody yeah yeah they should have just done what the rangers did and said fuck this
smaller market team they need the playoff revenue yeah and and what did they get two games well they
got it's two more than they would have had now um mirad atez uh for the athletic does an amazing
job with the jets and uh you know one of the things they talk about if you want to get granular
with the winnipeg jets is shift length um and one of the things that happened over the last few
years is that guys like superstars like shifley and connor their shift lengths were long they'd
be on the ice for too long shifley doesn't give a damn about his teammates man and and so here's
what happened so winnipeg did correct course at the beginning but murat says shifley and connor
shift lengths crept up to exactly their previous two long team leading numbers their defense
imagine those two defense should be leading the team in ice time there's half of them he stays
out too long he doesn't back check like what a nightmare their defensive contributions crept
down to the point where connor in particular stopped creating more than he gave back dubois
early season dominance disappeared for a full two months starting with winnipeg's january trip to
Montreal and ending with the last two weeks of the season Winnipeg passed into traffic instead
of shooting one-on-ones three-on-ones and there was even an Ehlers breakaway he's mentioning in
this and I just think it's a it's really important to to say this and his this is what his tweet said
to the article Winnipeg Jets leadership has spent much of the past five years preaching that
everything is okay even when things have gone horribly wrong Rick bonus blew that idea apart
in less time than it took Vegas to land their decisive series-clinching blow.
I mean, what else do you need to say?
I think they need to keep Bonas around, man.
Yeah.
Yes, I think so, too.
He seems like he's great for the organization.
And, like, even...
I'm not saying this is the team they should replicate,
but it kind of reminds me of when Brendan Shanahan joined the Leafs
and the first thing he did was retain Randy Carlisle.
almost as a fuck you to the roster yeah you bums are gonna play you're not gonna you're not gonna
decide for me what my decisions you're not getting your way and um and i i don't think bonus needs
this job he's got to be one of the oldest coaches in the nhl i think made his money yeah he could
probably just retire and nope i'm staying here and i'm figuring this shit out and if you fire
me fuck you i don't care i'll retire i'll do i'll do whatever i want i'm rick bonus i've been doing
this for years um and also i'm right like there's just there's a bit of a righteousness with him
he didn't have to talk himself into being right he didn't have to convince you you all saw it
every jets fan i spoke to yesterday was just like these guys stink these guys checked out they're
not even trying they didn't have the wah stick a fork in us oh adam they didn't have the wah yeah
no there's gonna be a problem adam there's gonna be a problem with uh hyundai dealerships across
the country when they have to find a new
spokesperson. Me. I'll be your
spokesperson. You don't play in the NHL, sir.
They got Zach Hyman
and then Mark Scheifele is going to leave for an American
city. And then so they got to find somebody
else. What Canadian star
Canadian player on a
Canadian team should be the star
of the Hyundai commercials?
New list. What you got? Power rankings.
Pierre Le Toubois in Montreal.
How do you win?
He got traded out of two cities because
he wanted to be. Wow. I got
i got my i got my number one ranking who is yours i got nick suzuki oh i like that wait so sorry
say again who's player on a canadian team not on toronto because they're too big for the hot
net commercials whoa they got strife leonard not too big they gotta represent the other side the
other parts of the no they want to go they want to go outside of toronto because they don't want
the toronto athletes getting all the yeah all the thing yeah i get that yeah i get that okay i got
Nick Suzuki, power ranking number one.
Either Elias Pettersson or Brady Kachuk.
So Brady Kachuk steps up and slashes the back tire of the Kia.
Pettersson's a good one.
And then he goes, what?
It's not my car.
And then he walks away.
Wow.
I think Pettersson's a really good one.
He is a good one.
And he could go, it goes from zero to 100.
Sorry, kidding.
Because he scored a hundred points.
By the way, are Connor McDavid and Leon Dreisaitl not available?
No, no, no.
Connor's too big.
uh i mean maybe for that they got you know i like i like hyman is in the fucking commercial
i like hyman for that i like hyman for that i like uh i know i nudge nudge could be no just
have an oiler oh you gotta have we have an oiler uh mackenzie wieger shut up
did you see how quickly we didn't go to the flames oh yeah we're also gonna blow it up i
If Nas has a better year next year, I would do Nas.
Oh, there we go.
That would be good.
All right.
I think that's a good.
It's not his fault.
They got to get rid of that coach.
So, I agree.
Nas is a good one for the Hyundai commercials.
Super not going to do it.
So, okay.
I hate to do this to Jets fans, but this is pretty bleak.
So, let's go through the list of players who they're probably going to trade.
Blake Wheeler.
How do they win that trade?
You can't.
8.2 million dollars and he's 36 years old.
Mark Scheifele, how do you win that trade?
You probably do.
That's the only winnable one that I see because he's undervalued, or is he?
You get $6.125 million for a 30-year-old 1A, 1B center.
Mark Scheifele's 30?
Yeah.
Time needs to slow down.
You can get a pretty penny from Mark Scheifele.
Logan Stanley, how do you win that trade?
you don't because you get fuck all for him i don't is logan stanley's not somebody you're
looking to trade he's rfa yeah you do rfa no they're trying to move him yeah i feel like
free just brought him up several times rfa is 25 years old makes not less than a million dollars
who knows what he makes less than a million dollars he's not very good
yeah he stinks man he's just big um who else he got pld how do you win that trade no you don't
you don't adam lowry you don't move that you have to keep him yeah that's what you don't do you move
kyle connor kyle connor's so good i know that's why i think if you're going rebuilt though you
move kyle connor 7.1 million dollars until 2026 that's a hell of a deal yeah you think about what
could you get for that oh he's 26 years old too like what 40 goals scored multiple times
you're getting huge especially at the draft now you're gonna get crazy picks for that here's the
other thing though we saw the sabers go complete scorched and salted earth um and what we discovered
is they can't do that because again they struggle they had a bad culture and they struggled to
recruit people to their city as well i'm not sure the jets can tear it down to the i'm gonna be
honest with you i don't think that's an apples to apples comparison and i'll tell you why i'll tell
you i'll tell you why no i'm not trying to take away from your point here i'm just shit um i would
say that what contributed to the the saber situation was the chaos at the top they had bad
general manager after bad general manager and they had an ownership group that didn't give a shit oh
of course and and so you know as much as as apparently as as nice as the owners are um i
think their focus was the bills and uh they all they yeah i mean think about the this if the plan
had worked in buffalo they would have been winning again in 2016 they would have been back in the
playoffs but they signed all the worst free agents that that free agency year akposo molson uh who
else did they like it's just bad bad jeff skinner was that christian erhoff yeah like oh but that's
what they were trying to do to surround jack eichel with those players right so they had the
sort of idea but i don't think that their ability to evaluate talent is was then what it is now
kevin adams is proving slowly but surely that he's a good talent evaluator yeah akpozo i think was a
little bit of bad luck but the yes health wise right yeah rest of it was real bad but i'm using
it as a comparison because again small market team that has trouble recruiting players and
if you're going to rebuild from ashes you need to draft a lot and nail all your picks that was
another thing with buffaloes they weren't nailing their picks yeah true right so winnipeg's pretty
good at that uh well who's man what's oh my god hi nola they got to make a decision there yeah
they do uh cole perfetti he'll get back into the lineup uh you know once he recovers from injury
obviously so that'll help you like oh man i'm trying to remember the name of the kid
they drafted this past year he had a really cool name uh whatever um
there is a future there in winnipeg brad lambert oh brad lambert yeah there's another guy like so
they have some interesting pieces um i look to trade a bunch of those dudes i don't trade connor
i know you could get a lot for him you could get a lot for connor mcdavid i don't think the
others are trying to move you know what i mean like i think you keep good players who have
committed to your team for a long time i think i 100 agree with that just because of how long
the contract is and how like cost efficient it is morrissey too look at that deal um the eelers
yeah morrissey connor probably the guys you're keeping the most but like eelers even though he's
27 only, making
6 million bucks.
That's a culture move.
You move out Ehlers, you move out
Shifley, you do the big deals.
I think the culture move is you
actually let Ehlers play,
which I suppose they're not doing.
Man, I hope the Leafs get him.
I want the Leafs to get Ehlers.
I think that guy's phenomenal.
Where are they fitting $6 million on the roster?
Who cares? The salary cap isn't real.
Vegas has proved that. He could be their
Cadry where he goes to
another team and
immediately lifts the
cup and you go fuck
yeah yep and it's
anyway it's a bummer
for Jets fans who are
so passionate whatever
but and and for Jesse
Pollock who has to
lick carpet at TSN
today yeah what yeah
that was the thing if
they didn't win last
night he had to lick
the carpet at the TSN
studios what about
is he cat poo guy
like no Jesse does
not live in Oshawa
okay is it you
were you cat poo guy
this whole time no
No, but he was my neighbor.
He was your neighbor.
He was my neighbor.
That's wild.
Shout out Jesse Pollock, who's doing one of the coolest things as a fan.
Just being an ambassador for the team, for that organization, for the city.
Shout out Jesse Pollock.
He's gotten to do some really cool shit.
Yeah, when they had him on the ice for the team skills comp.
So cool.
That's awesome.
That's like once in a lifetime shit that every fan dreams of.
and he got to do it because of just how excellent he's been as an ambassador for their organization
for like unpaid you know just being a fan representing them so that's awesome and after
i carved pld he did some really cool stuff with pld oh yeah um some yeah some really interesting
features like again he's not a bad guy i'm sure he's a good person but i i'm sure the
blue jackets and jets management have his face on a dartboard yeah somewhere in an office
guys uh moving on akira schmidt is fucking my bracket uh holy shit has allowed two goals in
three games since starting to play for the jet or the devils who were 2-0 down to the rangers
his goals against average is 0.63 his save percentage is 976 dude remember the minnesota
a while and how they included your
voice in their little playoff
package, but they were nice to you.
The Devils are going to make me look like an absolute donkey.
Are they? Oh my god.
Why? I talk about how they were soft
and stunk and
weren't built for this and the Rangers
were going to walk all over them.
Devils just won three straight.
Well, your first problem was that you bet against
a team with Andre Pallott on it in the playoffs.
Yeah, why did I do that? I don't know.
And down two-nothing against the Rangers.
That's his bread and butter.
That's his winning formula.
39 seconds into the game yesterday.
Like, all right, here's what we're going to do, guys.
First, we're going to lose the first two games.
What?
That's stupid.
Hey, what'd you sign me for?
Don't you know who I am?
Eric Holla, Dawson Mercer, and Eric Holla scored also.
Here's the stat.
Usually when you've got a comeback or a potential comeback
or a team that's getting killed, you have what's called score effects.
One team that's on the lead, up by three or four goals, starts to defend more, wants to tighten the game up.
The other team, not having anything to lose, goes, let's throw everything at them.
Last night, the shots on goal.
New York, 22.
New Jersey, 43.
The Rangers are built to dictate play.
And when they don't, they're fucked.
Jesse.
Yeah.
How we doing?
not great okay all right all right because i don't i don't know where the rangers went after
games one and two like it's a new jersey no they actually went back to new york and then
lost their game there um so but because new jersey is the highest in the new york was at home
yeah yeah they they haven't won since the first time they were in new jersey and it's just it's
been a completely different team who hasn't had any offensive abilities in the last three games
and the reason i'm like not as concerned is last year they were down 3-1 to the pittsburgh penguins
in the first round i don't know if you remember this they came back and they won three straight
games versus the pittsburgh penguins in round two they were down three to the carolina hurricanes
ended up winning two straight versus the carolina hurricanes and winning that they were so fun to
follow last year oh yeah so they've been in this position before jacob truba um panarin
crider they zabinijad they own adam fox they all know what it's like to be down in a series
and on the brink of elimination yes so i'm not ruling out a comeback but if just watching
fucking the last three games dictates anything new jersey found who they were during the regular
season and they look unreal i'm trying to look up the hype around akira schmidt
like i'm trying to find the lead up he'd played 21 games this year
or total in his career 18 this year he had a 922 save percentage in those 18 he was an extremely
good backup goalie and was he had a 905 in the ahl this season this same season he was their best
he was uh the best goalie on the utica comets but not by a wide margin by the way thank you devils
uh for calling up akira schmidt so that the toronto marlies actually have a chance apparently
they won last night against the utica comets no akira schmidt i guess it was nico does
um dude's a fifth round pick from 2018 where did this come from it's like why i didn't hear anyone
talking about it's just a guy getting hot at the right time and i wonder it doesn't mean he's not
good by the way yeah if they play this next game when is it saturday they play saturday at uh msg
and like the rangers lose i wonder if we go to the offseason they're looking for a new head coach
like i wonder if they're all if they're all fed up with gerard galant gerard galant is a two-year
coach isn't he he's he's so fiery that it only lasts so long you know you can only you only like
mess with someone's shit for so long until they're just like fed up with you and i wonder if these
players just fed up with glant and the amount of yelling he does and bitching and complaining
i gotta shout out the 2018 devil's draft class because two players two from the fifth round of
the 2018 draft have played over 20 games in the nhl one is akira schmidt the other is yagor
sharing govich they got two regulars in their lineup they got a top six player uh i think
until they got timo meyer and they got their starting goalie in the playoffs in the fifth
round of 2018 is that good uh is that good a little bit of luck in that by the way i just
want to throw this out there gerard gallant head coach of the columbus blue jackets 2004-2006
yeah florida panthers 2014 to 2016 vegas golden knight 70 to 20 and he is now 21 to 23 with the
rangers and if they lose in their first round series you have to think i literally he might
actually just be a two a two-year coach um your general manager chris jury provided you with
all of the horses to go win one round versus the new jersey devils you have maybe it's it's a little
bit on you mr galant for not getting them you got tarasenko and kane you know when you're when
you're riding secretariat and you're racing against against iggy you should probably win
he's fast as shit like still yeah but the thing is he has to be motivated to go fast right he's
not like true he like bindi's fast too but she is so fucking lazy it's like you see it once a year
but bindi i think runs like iggy where like dogs do this thing where when they duck their head yes
you know they're about to fucking fly
Bendy's good on corners too, corners hard
Iggy's so good at the corners
I gotta bring Bendy by, we gotta race him
oh we do gotta race him, you know that weird thing
dogs do at the dog park where they
one dog runs in a circle
and the rest of them follow him
and they all try to catch him
and then one dog breaks apart from the circle
which is cheating
that is cheating
you're breaking the dog rules
and all the dogs look at him like what the fuck
are you doing bosco or whatever the dog's name is riley but riley what what else luna a lot of
lunas um i don't want to take i feel like i'm taking away from new jersey uh by criticizing
new york but it's because it's also they're just really good lindy ruff has outcoached
gerard gallant like the how good new jersey is is exposing the flaws of the rangers lindy's been
So I feel like the Devils need some credit here in their coaching,
which has been spectacular in Akira Schmidt stepping up
and like Jack Hughes is coming out party, you know, all these things.
And they're exposing the flaws in New York.
And yeah, there's a lot on Gallant here,
and he's being outclassed by a better head coach right now.
I was about to talk about like pro scouting, doing a better job,
like getting information on Akira Schmidt.
But, I mean, the shot total Adam just mentioned,
And that wasn't a win because of New Jersey's goaltending.
It was a win because they were the vastly superior team.
Yeah, Shisterkin wasn't even bad.
It was just like, what's he supposed to do?
Shisterkin hasn't been bad in this series.
It's the fucking offense that just disappeared.
Shisterkin not being bad should be auto-win.
Auto-win.
So I want to ask you guys something.
There's a player with zero goals, zero assists, and zero points,
and he's a very important player.
Who is this player?
For the Rangers?
For the Devils.
Oh.
very important player
Timo Meier
is it Meier?
Timo Meier
really?
he does have 20 penalty minutes
but if there was a guy
that you're pegging to go
that guy should break out
and help him close the series
I feel like it's going to be Timo
I don't want to
I'm not trying to
shit talk the devils
they got it done by committee
and when you have Andre Palat
Timo Meier doesn't need to score
Andre Palat is one of those
playoff performer guys
he just is
but I think they are going to need
more out of Timo Meier
I forget who I was listening to
the other day
but they were saying
And, like, the Devils are doing all of this with, like, a literally zero production from Timo Meier.
Imagine if they got him going on top of everything they're doing.
Yeah.
So, yeah.
Wow.
Yep.
Wow.
And it's not like he's never been in the playoffs before.
Oh, no.
He has.
And he was actually really good the last time he was in the playoffs.
I was looking it up.
In 18-19, San Jose played 20 games in the playoffs.
Wow.
He had 15 points.
So, he's a playoff performer.
It just hasn't worked for him yet.
but like did not have a point not even like a secondary assist you're like you can luck into
an assist sometimes do we think the devils care i don't think they care would you care i wouldn't
care no three two in the series you're good yeah i would i would have cared if we were down three
nothing if you're the jets and you're sorry the jets the devils and you're down three nothing yeah
then you start to say where's timo uh i think even boston and we're gonna get to their series
but I think David Pasternak's expected goals is like 45% right now.
Really?
Yeah, I think he's only got two points or something in the series.
So, you know, Boston, for as good as they've been all year,
even those players can have bad stretches in a playoff.
You know how hard it is to win four games in a row in the NHL?
It's fucking brutal.
It's hard.
National fucking hockey league.
It never happens.
It never happens.
Against anybody.
Anybody.
Yeah, yeah.
So I actually do want to go to the Bruins
because the Bruins and Panthers,
if I can ask for anything
other than the Leafs making the second round,
I'm asking for this game going seven.
That overtime win.
If you're a goaltender.
Holy shit, Linus.
Holy shit, Linus.
Now, he's one of the better puck handling goalies,
is he not?
Well, he scored a goal.
He's going to be the first goalie
to ever win the Vezina
and score a goal in the same season.
Is that true?
I'm pretty sure.
Brodeur doesn't have a Vezina
in one of those years he scored a goal?
I think he did it in the playoffs, though.
Does that count?
I'm pretty sure Broder did it in Montreal in the playoffs.
Yeah, but did he win the Vesna this year?
That year.
Yeah, I don't know.
People are forgetting, like, during Broder's career,
Hasek won all the Vesnas.
That's right.
He stole a lot of Vesnas from those guys.
Yeah, which is, it always factors into my goalie debate.
But, man, that's just a play that can't happen.
And, like, I point this out.
Braden points it out.
In my, what is that?
You Braden points it out.
That was relevant
Shut up
Shut up with your big hat
Shut up
God damn it Jesse
Where was I going with that
Don't peck me with your hat
Oh and dang it
When I point out the
If you're a goaltender tend to goal plays
You know goalies
Have been getting on me
About well listen we're trying to help
You're not
well no no because there i make sure to point out when it's now i make sure to point out when
it's the defenseman's fault or when there was a breakdown i looked at that and i was just like
what the fuck are you doing like so now that i'm trying to analyze them a little more the ones that
are really bad i lean into because it's like you didn't need to leave your net at all here's the
thing about trying at the professional level the leafs are trying to get to the second round if
they don't does anyone care that they tried no so if a goalie tries to help and doesn't why should
we care i can't remember who it was but there was one a couple weeks ago where like he just
yeets it up the boards to who to whom there's no one there there's no one fucking there except an
attacker on the other team and uh he's trying to help all my yo honestly referees for a bit and no
longer referees got way too much of the benefit of the doubt for like decades in this sport
goaltenders you guys and i'm sorry i'm not talking about you mr beer league goaltender because let's
be honest there's a bit of a skill difference no you're a rock star yeah you're great you should
always play please please continue to please continue to keep playing in our games because
we can't find enough goalies take it but but you know at the professional level play to your
strengths manage your weaknesses stop doing it just let it skirt around like what are the what
are you better at handling the puck or stopping it like you with this giant paddle and a glove
as your lower hand and your blocker as your top hand what are the fucking odds you're any good
at handling this thing yeah unless you got time if you have time you can do anything but any good
team will be like and they'll rush in there and try to take away your time and then you go and
you give up the puck and all of a sudden it's in front of your net and then it's in it stop
just fucking stop i what i loved about florida and uh and boston's game uh was that it was there
was not neither team scored two goals in a row every goal was answered until overtime so do
claire scores in the first marshan in the second sam bennett in the second bergeron in his first
game scores because of course he's bergeron and this was the game that that florida was supposed
to watch out for because bergeron is coming back but then reinhardt oh they're up three to two and
And then Taylor Hall scores, and they tie it up.
And Matt Kachuk, obviously, is the big overtime winner about six minutes in.
Matthew Kachuk, for this team this year, has dragged them wherever they needed to go.
And he got better as the season went.
Is he a better leader now than he was in Calgary?
Yes, because he wasn't the leader in Calgary.
It never felt like it, did it?
No, it didn't.
It always felt like he was the kid.
it always felt like he was the kid because again you notice they didn't have a captain since geo
left um coaches need to stop doing this shit tortorella is doing it in philadelphia and it
i at least understand the thought process behind it because they're still evaluating the talent on
their team and they're you know rebuilding this um this top dog shit with uh daryl sutter in
calgary is to the point where it's toxic and not helping anybody well so aren't they gonna are they
am i not mistaken are they not looking for a general manager to match the coach in calgary
right now what kind of a backwards ass work culture have you never worked anywhere else
like sometimes hockey people need to step outside of the sport well most of them have never worked
anywhere else other than is that what's happening that's that's is that how they're doing he's not
he's not going anywhere he's not going anywhere now he wasn't there for the arena announcement
which by the way we don't need to do it now but i'm i'm watching that one because there's an
election coming up and if the party that's in power right now doesn't win and it doesn't look
like they're going to um that that arena deal's gone it's a hostage situation it's it's so oh
yeah it's so nakedly a political ploy oh yeah like literally they're trying to win an election on
this and and the it's crazy because this party is an ultra conservative party they're against
spending public money and they're spending public more public money than the team so the on this
event center the deal isn't finalized well no it because the new party coming in if they lose this
election which it's they can take back the deal they can they can say yeah we're not doing this
no no so what the i think the ruling party has said oh yeah no we're not finalizing this until
after the election yeah so basically hey if you vote for us oh wow you get a new arena calgary
And you remember that the Flames tried to get other political leaders unelected so that the Flames would have mayor that so that Calgary, the city of Calgary, would spend more public money on their arena project.
OK, so the other party, I don't know.
So they're called so they're called the UCP, United Conservative Party.
They're an ultra.
Well, they're not ultra right, but they're very far right.
And then you've got the end, the New Democratic Party, which is a center left party in Calgary.
it's it's left anywhere else but it's center left in alberta they don't so which the liberal party
i don't think they do have a liberal party but nobody everybody fucking hates liberals out there
both sides so which one's in power right now uh ucp the conservative and they so the conservative
party has signed this agreement to build a new stadium and if i'm not but they said we won't
it's not going to be official until we're a real not ratified until after this election wasn't the
premier not even elected daniel smith no she was uh she was appointed after the other guy
stepped down jason kenney just stepped down right yeah after covid so the other side they don't want
this arena deal why it's not that they don't why would they also just say yeah we'll do the deal
because it's it's right because it's the city of calgary's forking out like 50 or 60 percent of
the total cost and the other province of alberta as well the province and the city i think are
doing like are doing like more more money than the actual team is putting in and the team's
going to get all the revenue and tax dollars like there'll be some tax dollars from it but
the end of the day it's tilted in the favor of the private owner which is headed up by murray
edwards so wouldn't 30 million other people wouldn't the ndp the other side who's not in
right now wouldn't they benefit from being like yeah we'll also sign this they don't they they
would say that politically and again i'm not going to tell you which side is right or wrong i think
to know where i'm at but but politically what rachel notley would say who is the leader of
the ndp out there would say that public money should be going to schools should be going to
health care and should be going to agree with that i think there's a lot of people in alberta
that agree with that yeah because they have won before they were the previous ruling party it was
conservatives ndp ucp and it could be ndp again i wonder what is the provincial election i wonder
what factor like that announcement has on like oilers fans who are like what i know i don't want
calgary to get a new arena and i pay for it fuck you well exactly i would like a boy yeah hey wait
a second go oilers go and also fuck you and i don't blame them for that go vote in your oilers
jersey i don't blame them yeah and hey you know what the oilers wear orange go fuck yourself well
i think there was there was people on oilers twitter yesterday like really love calgary's new
arena project, and it's like the Calgary
is like the proposed arena with a big Oilers
logo on it.
Just because I think that does play a part.
Right? So listen. So this all
came from Matthew Kachuk. Politics are
a mess, but I think it's important that we touch on it.
Yeah, this is very crucial. Julian
has a really great piece on
it. Read that at The Athletic.
He's so good. He's fucking awesome.
I love Julian. I didn't want to get into it
because it's the playoffs. I want to talk about the playoffs,
but it is an important thing. The other thing I
should say uh that that when it comes to new arenas is uh according to frank zaravalli um uh the uh
the coyotes could be moving and here's here's what he said so basically um the team is if if
the tempe vote goes sideways and the team is getting very worried that it will uh they he
He said, I'll give you a little insight to how worried the Arizona Coyotes are about the arena vote that's coming up that will determine their future.
They have sent members of their front office door-to-door canvassing the last couple of weeks.
I hate these guys.
Steve's going to be in danger.
I know, but I have to say this.
Steve's brain is going to explode right now.
If the vote doesn't go well, the Coyotes could be homeless after 2026.
Saravalli says he could see the Coyotes moving as early as next season if the vote goes bad.
Can you imagine?
I'm just throwing that out there.
we'll move on i know you hate this subject but i think it's we got to bring it up gary will put
him in a in a radio shack somewhere like come hell or high water there'll be there'll be an
abandoned mall somewhere yeah right there's there's a target with wooden boards on it right
now actually guys we don't actually have ice at this rink we got roller skates but you know what
we got a really comfy couch for you to sit on when you put your roller skates on
oh my gosh it's crazy that has gotten to the point where their entire franchise might hinge
on a vote from a city if they want to accept a new arena like that's where they that's wild it's
almost like you painted yourself into the corner with the new arena stuff um and calgary and the
public funding did you guys see the tennessee titans are getting a stadium i did in nashville
and it it broke the record for most public funding for a stadium in tennessee so so there's
going to be 1.26 billion dollars in public money for their 2.1 billion dollars we we don't like
socialism for normal people but corporate socialism we're all about it so that's that is a
bad trend like that if i hope it's not a trend that is a bad thing to happen that probably doesn't
start a trend you know i don't like that strictly speaking and i know i'm a little bit biased here
but what i respect the hell out of with maple leaf sports is when they they own um the the the um
they own bemo field with the city of toronto so whenever they were well it's a 50 50 split and i
guess because toronto owns the exhibition grounds that it's on and the exhibition if you've never
been to toronto is we used to be where you like bought and sold cattle uh at the end of the summer
you went way back and i was gonna go to like ontario where they where they showcase the
brand new model t like literally it's it's been there for like 150 years right like it was so
those grounds have been that way forever the toronto owns that and toronto's not going to
give up that real estate so what they have like a 50 50 uh purchase agreement with mlsc where
Toronto owns the right to make all the moves, but MLSC can't sell it to a third party.
And all that to say is that when MLSC wanted upgrades done, they didn't even approach Toronto
City Council.
They added a whole new deck, like a whole thing.
They put $50 million into it.
Because the Argos came in, they hosted the Grey Cop, right?
That's right.
Well, and not even just that, though, Jesse, because those were temporary.
TFC.
They were just upgrading it for TFC's sake.
and also world cup events and 50 million dollars they just said we're doing this and they didn't
even bug the city of toronto that's the kind of shit you've got the money this is your billionaire
play toy that's larry tannenbaum's play toy that's bell and rogers play toy those are the companies
that own it uh this is murray edwards play toy this is whoever owns the tennessee titans play
toy why does the public need to fund their net worth because here's the thing at least with a
hockey arena you can do other things right concerts a football stadium you can have concerts
no in the renderings for the new stadium they had the concerts for sold out so they got three
concerts a year that are who how many artists are big enough to sell 70 000 tickets nashville
all the time they're gonna have concerts there it's nashville they have 40 different
you guys need to give us a billion dollars in public money because we're gonna hold some
concerts here three it's like cold play you two and taylor swift who else is gonna do that who
else is selling like that this is one of those conversations where like i'm sitting at the
dinner table and my parents are fighting and like i have no basis for what's even going on and listen
it's gonna be a cool thing you know what i like about the cowboy stadium as far as i know jerry
jones is like i'm doing this yeah all right jerry jones paid for it i respect that amy strunk
is the owner of the
principal owner of the Tennessee Titans.
Aimed on. What are you doing? I googled
Amy Strunk net worth.
What's your guess?
$10 billion.
$7.3 billion.
See? You guys overestimated.
She does need the public money.
Her net worth is only $1.6
billion. Oh, there's no way she could afford
this. Yeah.
So isn't it interesting? Broke ass.
Get good
broke ass i have a question do you think that maybe there was a threat to move them
because there are bigger markets you could move that to that's a no how many cities do these
people think there are well we're just gonna move them you can have two teams in la the tennessee
titan you got two teams in new york you probably could they already have that what are you talking
about i know but i'm saying like you could probably support two teams in in another city
where chicago has two baseball teams yeah south side north side yeah and a football team and the
bears stink so you probably could get some disaffected bears fans i don't think so that
is what happened with um why does his name escape me uh the owner of the los angeles rams uh al davis
not al davis the other davis no no no the rent not the rams the that's the raiders owner of the
He owns the Colorado Avalanche as well.
Owner of the Rams.
Eno Stanley Kroenke.
Stan Kroenke, yes.
Is he another broke ass who's worth less than $2 billion?
Stan Kroenke owned the Los Angeles Rams.
He owned the St. Louis Rams.
The city of St. Louis said, fuck you, Stan Kroenke.
We're not building you a new stadium.
Because the Edward Jones Dome is a hot piece of garbage and they need a new stadium.
And they wouldn't build him a stadium.
So he said, I'm going to take this and move it to L.A.
And the city of St. Louis actually sued him for stealing the team and moving to L.A.
And they won the lawsuit.
What'd they get?
I don't know.
Not a team.
I can pull it out, but not a team.
Yeah.
And so he's worth $12.9 billion U.S. dollars.
Also owns Arsenal.
Oh, yeah.
So he's not broke out.
Yeah.
He owns Arsenal, the Rams, the Nuggets, the Avalanche, the Rapids of the MLS,
Colorado Mammoth of the National Lacrosse League,
Los Angeles Gladiators of the Overwatch League,
and the LA Gorillas of the Call of Duty League.
When are we going to see a city pool all their money
and just buy a team themselves like South Park getting a Whole Foods?
Green Bay Packers.
Are they owned by Green Bay?
I think they're publicly owned, are they not?
That's cool.
that's kind of neat i want the ontario that's so fucked dudes stan kong stan kronke moved the la
rams to st louis and then moved them back yeah yeah he's originally had moved them from there
bonkers you you're asking about the settlement uh 571 million dollars was the settlement so
he makes that in a year he puts that shit on fire win the lawsuit they settled the same the city of
st louis settled with uh stan kronke for 500 well nearly 600 million dollars because he stole their
he's smoking that in a joint right now that's ridiculous he's broken oh five 500 million bucks
that's he would and you know what here's the thing about that he'll just write it off
oh that's lost for the company bummer like david from shit that's right yeah but he actually but
but he has the money to do it though david didn't david didn't understand that you have to have
money coming in first to write something off stan's got the money to write it off he's got
arsenal arsenal's like we'll pay for that uh so no is that the chant no it's not i'm just making
it up arsenal we're drunk and loud and really good this year they are very good this year
no we need the uh the britain ice hockey team chant we're shit and we know we are we're shit
i love that and we know we uh after winning a game where shit do you know who stan cronky is
married to it's suzanne cronky cronky and and cronky and his last name and walton oh she's
you know walmart do you know where walton comes from walmart oh so he is literally the broke ass
of that relationship maybe yeah she um i believe she all she owns franchises in her own right like
she owns or her family members of the walmart family own i know the at least the denver broncos
so they both kind of own sports teams but yeah a billionaire married somebody who is a member
of the walmart family you know you know how stan made his money add their piles of money
to more piles of money you know stan made his money uh he founded the cronky group he married
her in 74 she was a walmart heiress but walton yes but yes but and like walmart wasn't as big
as it is today back then 100 he founded the cronky group in 83 so they're nine years into the marriage
at that point it was a real estate development firm that built shopping centers and apartment
buildings he developed shockingly oh many of the plazas near walmart stores so they would build a
walmart and then stan would come in and go what else do we need to augment the walmart and hope
that it's successful here's a bunch of condos yeah so we can build our customers into the walmart
you know how like you go to walmart you know walmarts don't kind of just exist on their own
like you never see a walmart on a street and be like oh that's kind of just the walmart mcdonald's
inside the wall there's 800 things that around it around that's fucking stan kronke and his wife
who owns the walmart and him owning the real estate building these giant things around the
world and he bought all his building supplies from walmart at everyday low prices i saw a suggestion
on reddit once that when you hit 999 million 999 999 dollars you should just get a plaque from the
government that says congrats you won capitalism yeah like the plaque you get when you hit 100
000 subscribers on youtube or what's the one you get a million it's like gold it's gold
and i'm a ways away maybe one day we can all reach that together maybe but i yeah you should
just get a plaque and then you got to give the rest away the point you have too much you won
capitalism that's enough outlining the the point for outlining who stan kronke is and who ann is
and and all of these billionaires and everything is these people don't need public money to build
these stadiums i'm sorry to the owner of the tennessee titans you didn't need 1.26 billion
dollars in public money i'm sorry to the city of calgary you shouldn't be paying for these people
to build a stadium like i get you want a new arena saddleham's fucking sucks now because old
you need a new arena you shouldn't pay for it i understand like there are arguments for why well
we shouldn't have to pay for the entire thing like okay maybe i'll hear the argument but it's
something like i want to say government is paying like two-thirds at least like between city and
province a lot of thirds it's too much it's too fucking much way too much these people are
billionaires and these are their toys i agree oh i agree yeah like i mean who's cheering for that
let's go murray edwards let's go invent a chant on the spot like adam adam would you like the
city to pay for your mustang yes should i had to rebuild should they i did i forgot out of the
billionaire this is how yeah the way he guys i'm a billionaire i deserve this look at what i have
done for you the people by being a billionaire i i mean listen i had to i had to rebuild the
engine this this uh this winter tax money uh well why not i'm a billionaire look what i did for you
that's that's how that's literally what they're saying to people i'm a billionaire look what i've
done for you you know what this building could use like i know it's been a fairly um practical
podcast studio but what about a helipad i think john tory or whoever just replaced him
should give us we haven't had the election yet because i mean think of all the great stuff he
doesn't live here all the all the great podcasts we've provided you i want a parking garage
at my hoose so i can buy 20 cars for my 20 car hoose and i think ajax should pay for it
what the fuck like what a what a life like gee you know what like here's here's a moment
i'm positive no one listening to the show will ever experience
i need something you know what i'm gonna do i'm gonna call the government and they're gonna pay
for the whole fucking thing and i'm not talking about like necessities to live no no i'm not
talking about like basic society stuff i need a stadium and it's going to be shaped like my
fucking head i thought you were to say your anus yeah to play ball games and ice sticks take me out
to the me game and i think everyone should pay for it excuse me government i need you to take
Me out to the me game.
And you're going to build a building.
Cranes and shit.
The government's on the line.
Yeah.
Oh, hello, government.
Do I have the government on the line?
Hi, you have us.
I am the latest four-year term person to win an election locally.
Oh, that's right.
I definitely did not do things backhandedly to get you there
into this position of perceived power.
Do you want to hear the song I just wrote?
I would love to.
I bet it's beautiful.
Take me out to the me game.
Take me out with the crowd who has to buy the shit
that I'm also selling in the me game building.
So if we give you public money for this building,
I'm assuming then that you'll make the tickets free
to the public
because we've paid for the building
listen to me
with all those
little bones in your ears when I
tell you this
fuck you
not a fucking chance
government
not a fucking chance
in shit you will build
to take me out to the me game stadium
and I will be taking all of it
i'm assuming you won't be using your own real estate development company that you made all
your billions of dollars then to build it and profit off it that a third way i think you're
starting to catch on to how this works and i'm assuming you're not going to ask me for special
tax districts that tax that that means that the government gets less tax money than any other
district in the city hey you know in harry potter and the half-blood prince how the dude gets
elected and then the minister of magic shows up and tells you how shit really works welcome to
the fucking big leagues kid build me the take me out to the me game stadium
by the way me out to the me can i just throw this out there that's what a lot of these guys
are asking for now too like oh yeah they'll have you build the arena and then they'll be like you
know the next 99 years tax revenue is all yours no nine like the fuck is going on the tax revenue
Is yours after you're dead?
Yeah.
That's what it should say in the contract.
It shouldn't be an amount of years.
Yeah, the company keeps going.
You have to look it under the law.
A corporation is considered a person.
It's a person.
There was some sort of deal signed recently.
Like so-and-so signed a 95-year lease.
Fucking what?
Oh, that was in Toronto.
Was it?
Yeah.
So the Ontario place.
Oh, it's Ontario place.
They turned Ontario place over to a spa company from Austria.
for the and i think it expires in 2118 your spa and they haven't existed until long after you're
dead they have not announced it yet and we don't know what the terms are and the public has no idea
about this we don't know and it's very shady but what those the funny thing is about those long
contracts sometimes they come due because this year uh winnie the pooh in the is in the public
domain yes because it's it's copyright has come due so like the original winnie the pooh we should
just throw it on a t-shirt they're doing it they're doing they're doing another they did
the horror movie with yeah now they're gonna do blood and honey yeah now they're gonna do one
where christopher robin is like um he's like uh holden caulfield from uh to not to kill a
but what's the the uh uh catcher in the catcher in the ride he's like a catcher in the ride type
guy you know he's like fucked up and on drugs and like and the and winnie the pooh was like
like what he sees
when he is fucked up
on drugs
that's the new
Winnie the Pooh movie
that's coming out
how do we capitalize
on Winnie the Pooh's name
we can do anything
we want with it
it's public domain
what do we do
oh I just found out
what the P in SDPN
stands for
Pooh
Steve
Pooh
network
Steve Dangle
Pooh network
that's Pooper Dooper
Pooper Dooper
Pooper Dooper
Pooper Dooper
Pooper Network
so in theory
we could just call it
the Steve Dangle
Winnie the Pooh network and it's fine
let's do it
I say let's do it
by the way even when your phone's
off and you yell into it
just like South Park right
go fuck yourself and it's just Winnie the Pooh
going watch it go fuck yourself
when your phone is
not on and you're not on a call with someone but
you scream into it it still comes
through the speaker and my right
ear is fucked right now
you did a lot of yelling
There was a lot of intensity in Steve's...
It's not going to be a fun listen.
I saw the front of Adam's brain through his eyes.
I don't know if I've ever seen somebody's eyes look that bad.
Take me out to the...
You had David Clarkson fucked with your water bottle eyes there, man.
It was crazy.
It's our fucking water bottle that you paid for.
Take me out to the me game.
Audio is going to be disaster.
Have fun with that, Jess.
Yeah, but make sure you quiet down the beep that you had earlier in the show.
That'll be distracting.
I will do that.
There we go.
Buy me some peanuts.
Oh, God.
Jesus.
That's awful.
That's so loud.
All right.
Do we want to do a press conference or are we wrapping it up?
Dallas has the lead.
That's cool.
What about all the other series?
Huh?
What about...
Ah, fuck them.
Huh?
Islanders, Hurricanes.
Ah, fuck them.
We'll find out.
listen like what what do you want me to listen the deciding game is tonight and most people
maybe maybe the deciding game is tonight because it's three two elimination game i didn't want to
hit all the series because i was like there aren't there like we got to wait for the storylines right
one quick storyline in islanders hurricanes um matthew barzal has been a i'm not going to say
a negative but definitely hasn't been a positive for the new york islanders since he arrived in
new york uh last game down three one do you mean bo horvath what did i say barzell you said barzell
you mean bo horvath you said arrived in new york i was like uh no barzell's been there for quite
some time sorry and he sucked the whole time sorry i meant i meant bo horvath has not been
a positive at all yeah i wonder if uh last game uh he got demoted off uh off the top lines um i
one of getting bohorvat going is a bad omen for the carolina hurricanes and that who knows what
could happen the next two games because it's a feisty team he was unbelievable for vancouver in
the uh bubble yeah playoff player hasn't been there yet but also if he doesn't show up again
then it's like that trade wasn't that great well yeah but they lock him down for eight more years
so it's not he's not a rental when i say wasn't that great i mean wasn't that great for this year
well yeah going forward it could be excellent it's like people talking shit about the tanners
and no deal like well they didn't get them to get rid of them exactly they're gonna retain them
yeah yeah um stars wild what do you guys think that ends uh i think that's going seven games
it really does feel like it's due for a triple ot doesn't it yeah it's a seven game series
yeah crack in avalanche crack and win you think the crack and close the avalanche yeah they do
they do they're all past abs are done no you're gonna see ascended macar who's gonna be mad about
getting himself suspended and he's gonna be otherworldly i think okay bullshit suspension
should have been two games it should have been i agree um kings edmonton oilers man that's going
seven the kings are available at positive money and i couldn't turn it down i'm telling you that's
going seven games and we're gonna see a crazy edmonton i can't wait to see what the shots
from edmonton look like when edmonton oilers get into the second round i can't wait for you to pay
