let's take a quick look at the nhl standings in the atlantic division florida 63 games played
92 points toronto 63 games 85 points great team and in third place no that's the boston bruins
64 games played
85 points
If the playoffs started today
The Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins
Would meet in the first round
For all the
Huffing and homing
About the Leafs season
And how it's been going
The damn Leafs are in second place in the division
I know it's amazing
Shut up they're a great team
That's what I'm focusing on
Yeah
But what's your subconscious focusing on
no they're gonna get home ice i know i hear what you're saying with your face and mouth
i hear what you're saying what are you when you see those standings what do you think about
2013 2018 2019 this unending nightmare this batman and joker scenario i think you and i
are destined to do this forever this is how you want it to be done though is it if the
If the Leafs are ever going to get to a second round, isn't it perfect that they beat Boston?
Fuck, he's right.
You know I'm right.
I hate it.
This is exactly how we want it.
You know what?
It's a lot of fun.
To me, sports is fun.
To me, it's the best story out there, and I think Jesse's right.
And listen, if the Leafs are really going to do this, don't they have to do it against the Bruins?
Yes.
Don't they have to?
Yes.
I said that the last three times!
But they have to.
They're going to do it.
They're going to have to do it against the Bruins.
It has to happen.
It has to happen.
And Pete Blackburn is going to have to troll the fans for an entire series.
That's eight to ten days of Pete Blackburn trolling the Leafs in a row.
I hope you're ready for that.
Now, obviously, we have some games and stuff to talk about.
We have some issues and stuff to talk about.
But let me ask you this question.
When we have – what would be the thing that you would say most about NHL general managers?
If you could use a word or a sentence to describe them, what would it be?
Old.
Okay, what else?
old works uh what oh that was gonna be my word what what people okay what men i would say while
those are also true uncreative oh lacking in imagination mostly i would say there's a few
who are not and you know what i have to say for the teams that were trading their 2023 2024 2025
picks there are some teams with imagination i'm starting to like what i'm seeing sure they're
starting to watch football which is nice because that's what they do that's what the nba does
but i can't stand looking at this oh dear oh according to pierre lebrun the nhl gms are
discussing extending the salary cap into the stanley cup playoffs now you might not think
this is a big deal uh and i guess it's i guess for most teams it's not however players don't
get paid in this in the uh in the regular sorry outside of the regular season so why would you
have a salary cap in the playoffs i guess there's been a lot of complaining a lot of whinging about
what's happening with the tampa bay lightning who yet again have somebody important uh on their
ltir do they not well they went and traded for brent seabrook's contract so they were one of
the teams who traded for a ghost and what does that mean steven it means uh they're able to
spend over the salary cap right which is how the cba is structured is it not it sure is right
Like, you know what we needed?
We needed a hard cap to make the smaller teams competitive.
No.
But I guess there's a group of 10 or so GMs,
according to Pierre Lebrun,
that have talked about it over the past month
and are in favor of seeing the salary cap
extended to the playoffs in one form or another,
or at least having the discussion about it.
Obviously, nothing would change this year.
Change never comes fast.
I'm quoting directly here.
If this thing ever gets off the ground,
it wouldn't happen until next season at the earliest.
And it should be noted,
the very notion of extending the salary cap
into the postseason is a cba matters that would matter that would require the nhlpa to sign off
for it on it and i can guarantee you this the nhlpa would never sign off on of course not and
here's what i have in front of me uh in my mind a uh a board game of guess who and on it there's 32
gms right but if you don't meet certain criteria flick you get flicked down oh okay like the
yeah yeah there are certain gms because they're having the gm meetings and they're going to have
their their old gm talks about the same shit every time and frankly even though all 32 teams are
equal there are certain teams that should be bluntly excluded from this conversation
montreal just because you're in last i don't want to hear it you spent the most money last year
shut up and i think they're spending the most money this year too aren't they arizona half
your roster or ghosts and that's been the case for over half a decade shut up seattle you just
got here shut up new jersey you haven't done anything since taylor hall was on your team
shut up haven't even made the they actually bought all last offseason which is hilarious
no but like what i'm saying if you haven't done anything if you haven't been relevant in the
playoff conversation I don't want your opinion you know what I mean so uh they shut up when was
the last time the Sens made the playoffs I know they went to the conference final 2017 have they
made it since I don't think so shut up Philadelphia shut up Buffalo shut up Chicago you suck but when
you were relevant you did this shut up Detroit shut up San Jose is maybe the first team looking
at the bottom of the standings
that gets any say.
Yeah, but they have
some big contracts on there
and I'm not...
You're right, Adam,
so shut up!
Get out of here!
They have some outrageous contracts
and it could have been worse
with Tavares at $13 million,
which is what they offered him.
The Ducks just tried to trade
for Dodonov.
Shut up!
I would never tell
Lou Lamorello to shut up,
so that's maybe the first one
with the Islanders.
That's maybe the first one.
What's wrong with the GMs
having the discussion?
Just exploring the idea
because it can't come in effect.
Last episode,
I brought up
how the CBA expires
in 2026.
i believe the year i said um and this can't be changed until then so what's wrong with them
five years ahead of time just having a conversation uh i don't like a conversation that has an obvious
answer because that feels like a waste of time what's the obvious answer what is the obvious
answer to not friggin have it a salary cap that goes into the playoffs what are we doing and i i
think it goes back to i think a lot of people disagree with you on that and it goes back to
The idea that hard salary cap therefore equals inherent fairness, which I'm sorry to tell
you doesn't exist.
No, it's money laundering.
Sports like life are unfair.
And bigger teams are going to have advantages.
And reality is, if there was a salary cap in the playoffs, then there would have to
be LTIR in the playoffs.
And if there's LTIR in the playoffs, then teams can overspend the salary cap.
The other thing I want to say is we keep penalizing teams for going over,
but we do not penalize teams for coming in under.
And the whole point of having a salary cap floor,
if you're actually pro player, which a lot of people, shockingly, are not.
If you're pro player, you need teams to be spending money.
That's why there's a $62 million minimum.
Or I think it's 62.
I think it's something like a 20 million.
Yeah.
But there are teams spending below that because they're poorly run.
They're poorly run.
And poor.
and poor but poorly run poor poorly run franchises for years and generationally
poorly run franchises multiple owner poorly run franchises not naming anybody in particular and so
if we're going to get upset about that i would also like to start penalizing shitty teams from
shitty organizations that are taking from the pool taking from the players and taking from the the
teams that are actually run well because by the way you can have a small market team and have it
be profitable you can have a small market team and have it be really well run that's extremely
very possible under the current nhl system the teams that can't do it are incompetent and i don't
understand why we're so focused on worrying about teams that are spending more we spend no time
talking about teams that are spending less less that's the crime yeah because here's the thing
we got a couple of teams in this league on life support life support and nobody's like we should
probably fix that and other teams that should be excluded from the conversation anyone who's ever
traded a player who's never going to play again which would exclude the leafs of course this whole
conversation excludes the least by the way oh a hundred percent uh well and speaking of playoff
relevance lol but yeah right they've been in there but at least they're there yeah they're at least
they're there and participate and then promptly leave but uh they acquired nathan horton don't
want to hear from you Tampa Bay don't want to hear well the Leafs reacquired David Clarkson's
contract too don't forget that he finished his career as a Leaf so they traded him he did play
again reacquired him never played again don't want to hear from you Brent Seabrook to the Tampa Bay
Lightning don't want to hear from you uh all the teams who acquired Mark Savard's contract and
there were several don't want to hear from you the Coyotes with Pronger don't want to hear from you
the Coyotes with Datuk don't want to hear from you the Coyotes with uh Brian Little don't want
to hear from you the coyotes with the list is even longer than that but i can't remember them
all don't want to hear from you the jets who traded brian little to them don't want to hear
from you the red wings who traded datsu to the coyote don't want to hear from you guys the the
wrong people are having this conversation who who's the can you name a single team who can
participate in this conversation the whole reason the salary cap is there is nhl gms are out of
their minds and stupid and can't control themselves why are they having the debate
should okay guys now that we're all here in the same room should we control ourselves
right yeah and and the idea the very idea the hypothesis that general managers care about
fairness they don't give a shit no no they're trying to win no it should be owners having this
debate if the nhl oh i spilled my coffee if my nhl general manager said i don't think the league's
fair enough i'd fire him like get out of here the whole point if you're not trying to at least
if you're not here's the thing there is there's cheating which like the patriots did when they
like videotaped the giants practice right when they did that that's sort of cheating but the
whole thing of the old adage if you're not cheating if you're not trying or so you're not
trying if you're not cheating whatever it is what lou lamorello does and did with the leafs and did
with the islanders and did with new jersey that is the kind of competitive i want do you think
Lou Lammarello gives a shit about fair?
I don't know what he gives a shit about.
I'd be curious.
What if he was like really...
Showing up on time and being shaved.
He cares about that.
You think Lou Lammarello is a Warhammer guy?
What do you mean?
Like he just, you know, in his spare time,
he just likes to paint those little figures.
No.
Put them in different spots.
I don't think so.
No?
No.
I think Lou Lammarello lives and breathes.
There's a garbage.
There's actually a garbage over there.
Yeah, but I threw it towards you, so I don't care.
Here, throw it.
There's the garbage.
Where's the garbage?
right over jesse oh no shit i missed anyways steve's trying to clean up his coffee so i just
think i mean it's pretty funny it's pretty funny do you think it's funny how jesse do you think
it's funny how it's it's the wrong people having the conversation for sure is it a conversation
worth having yeah i don't know why you can't talk about it you can talk about it yeah that's that's
all the report is because nothing's going to change until the cba is renegotiated into a long
long lockout but these these aren't the people that we should be looking towards for this
decision making and i guess i guess if you look at it from that perspective i think that's what
you're looking at is these are the wrong guys you should not be making the change because you are
the ones doing the damage so i guess it's a pointless conversation because you shouldn't
have an input you shouldn't have a seat at the table to this change in the cba because you're
the general manager who's making these bad decisions all of them then yeah yeah you create
you created this this is this is an owner decision like you said adam and a player decision those are
the two parties who should be negotiating this new rule change so yeah why are you talking about
this gm it's it's like whenever i see a news story like the government voted to give themselves a
raise i'm like feels like they shouldn't be in charge of that you're yelling at the tv that's
my money yeah that's well shouldn't feels i don't know who should be in charge of that but i'm
positive it's not you yeah like what i've never i've never seen you know what they don't they
don't want it this time the coyotes have 21 million dollars on injured reserve which uh if
you so if you subtract that from their salary cap they're at about like 55 ish million dollars
an actual salad cap you should be as upset about the coyotes grossly underspending under the cap
floor as you were about kucherov last year coming back in tampa overspending the cap ceiling like
it's the same thing except in reverse and those are some of the highest paid coyotes where's the
t-shirt for this yeah you know like last year we had t-shirts about kucherov by the way any general
manager and truly any fan base that's complaining about this, let's call it what it is. If that was
your team, you wouldn't care. If it's, oh man, like remember when Tampa won last year, Canadians
fans, I get this, rightfully so, were ticked about the fact that they had spent 18 million over the
cap or something like that. And then Tampa Bay, they made a t-shirt out of it, word on boats or
whatever but if it if it had been reverse where montreal had spent 18 million over and tampa had
spent right to the cap you know because like the good guys the montreal canadians were okay um do
you think montreal canadians fans would give it a shit they'd be like yeah you know what let's hand
the cup back yeah every fan base every fan base would be like i don't care how much they spend
just win a cup yeah you know so don't don't so when when what jesse says what he says don't come
back to us in the comments and go i'll tell you why i care more about overspending than
underspending because you don't no you don't if you were put in that position you would not you'd
be like you know what my team just won the cup and i'm not going to celebrate it because it's
they cheated i am if you leave a comment about this i'm going to assume you're jeremy jacobs
okay jeremy i want not okay the only person i want responding to this is not jeremy jacobs on
youtube hello my name is merrimy bakobs and i think the team should have more accountability
also the leafs shouldn't be allowed to fly their own players to toronto was that a thing you can't
work out in the off season in the facility remember that the leafs were that was boston
that did that no i don't know if it was boston but we can assume so we can reliably assume
no but someone in the nhl went the leafs are flying their own players to by the way companies
do that all the time no not in the nhl no not in the nhl like the the leafs were paying to fly
players to canada so that they could train at the leafs practice facility not allowed to do that
which you can't why on earth can't you do that because the poor teams can't do it so it's unfair
It's unfair that the rich teams get to do it
Listen, when it comes to people
I will never scream that
When it comes to multi-multi-multi-million dollar
Hockey teams
Get on board
Okay, what if you simply
Did a good job and were able to afford
Flying your
Prospects to Canada
Well like we found out last year
It's not as though there isn't hockey support
In Arizona
The AHL team does great
there's a lot of of great young development leagues there for kids
i'm just using them as an example i'm sorry i didn't mean to name any team specifically no but
like where does it stop so like we i've told the story before where a player was traded from the
ottawa senators broke to the toronto maple leafs rich yeah and they were talking about how they
didn't have a goalie coach travel on the road with them is that not allowed either so we bring
that up at the gm meetings that shouldn't be allowed shouldn't be allowed leave shouldn't
be able to do that get unbroke do a better job you know what you know what might help teams with
this move to fucking labretton flats yeah that would help oh sorry what else luxury tax the nhl
isn't a business where the businesses within the nhl are allowed to operate in a free market sense
where the best run organizations uh go to the top because they're the best run the ones that make
the most profit are uh are thriving in the marketplace because they're making the most
money it's it's run in the way that the nhl is the business and then all the entities within it
are just supporting the big brand you know so they're just trying to prop up all 32 teams
instead of just letting the 32 teams operate as separate businesses that's why i as a fan of the
nhl whenever gary betman comes out to present the stanley cup i cheer for him and then as soon as
one of the players comes and picks it up i stop right right because it's about the shield it's
about the crest it's about the shield gary comes out yes daddy slave and then like olvechkin picks
it up in 2018 and i'm like boo give it back to gary that's what olvechkin should have done in
2018 forget nicholas backstrom it should have been betman to olvechkin back to betman yes daddy
slaves i'd like to see a world where we had a league where a team who's willing to spend all
the money do all the things in the in they have the biggest fan base is allowed to thrive in every
single way that they can like in regular business like if adam and i both had competing mac and
cheese companies and adam is purposely trying to spend less money than me and i'm spending all the
money i can my business would be better and i'd like to see an nhl where hey if you're willing
to do all of the things and put in all the work and put in all the resources to build a great
hockey team you're allowed to do that instead they're propping up all the other mac and cheese
companies so they're all kind of balanced like that's ridiculous it's like a terrible way for
businesses to be run you have a vastly superior mac and cheese to adam and i am legislating that
it needs to be shittier and yeah mine needs to get worse not even that his needs to get better
no that's just what yours needs to be worse come down to your level yeah that's the point
because here's the thing the mac and cheese the cheese that i make the mac and cheese that i make
doesn't taste like cheese so instead of making mine taste like cheese you're making jet you're
making jesse water down his cheese so it tastes less like cheese so we can be a little bit more
in the similar i have a ceiling on my cheese goodness yeah yeah i mean i'm capping but you
know what in four to five years you never know i could be a little cheesier you could fall ass
backwards somehow into a delicious cheese substance adam like no one knows how to get to
your mac and cheese factory move it to like a more populated area like labretton flats
where everyone there loves mac and cheese and it's easy to get to i i think what i'll do
is you know what i'm gonna you know what i'm gonna do i'm gonna throw a big event a big promotion for
my company uh and i'm gonna bring a bunch of people and they can have my mac and cheese which
doesn't quite taste like cheese and then what i'm going to do is walk through the crowd and give
everybody the finger i'm going to sit so i'm going to walk through the crowd and everybody
and not not like from far away i'm going to get in i'm comfortably close and do this do that do
that to every single one of them because what is the reason why what is the reason why it's art
the reason why i'm going to do that is because they're not doing enough to make my company
more competitive with jesse's company kind of like eugene melnick at the outdoor game do we not
how about this your mac and cheese factory is performing poorly so what we need to do is move
your mac and cheese manufacturing into a culinary art school um with a far uh smaller okad uh yeah
adam is gonna make food out of okad now yeah i'm gonna actually i'm going to hire students
actually to work work because i don't have to pay them as much they have to pay the school to be
there well and you have to because you know you have no mac and cheese manufacturers under
contract for next season that's true so you gotta hire students right to do it it well you do have
that one mac and cheese manufacturer you claimed off waivers who super doesn't even want to work
for you right but he's mine but he's yours and and you know what the thing i'm gonna do just to
make sure that i make the same amount of losing losing money that i'm making i'm gonna charge
triple the price for my mac and cheese you know how about that and i'm gonna call it mac and
squeeze if you never forget mac and cheese company covers any of the costs for his employees you need
to fill your diaper up to the waistband and make it so that he's not allowed my employees get free
lunch oh like i provide oh that's unfair competitive advantage we have a cool work
from home thing if you want to stay home you don't want to come to the office like we have
work for no we have a great work environment you come in seven days a week you come in 16 hours a
day i'm legislating work for miserable i fly guys wherever you were least happy how dare you
work for miserable i fly guys from france they call it mac and fromage whoa yeah no i'm legislating
no actually i claim those guys off waivers too sorry i was gonna fly him in and then i took him
A guy wants to come to my company
But Adam's company gets dibs on it
Even though I
Hired this employee
Adam gets first dibs
He had to buy himself out
Of his mac and cheese manufacturing contract
In France
Just to come over and work for me
But no he's got to go work
At OCAD
With Adam's shitty factory
Because the rules say that
Not a league
Not a league
it's an illusion
damn it
it's an oh yeah the NBA is not a league
because Jimmy Butler wanted to fight his coach
I man
I kind of like passion like that sometimes
when people say I want to fight you they don't actually mean it
no like how many times have I told you
Steve I will fight you on this show
not we've never fought some
no not not yet yeah we might
you know I mean
give me some of that focaccia when we go upstairs
I said I wanted to so
that's good focaccia
it's very good focaccia my girlfriend makes focaccia every week so where was i gonna go
oh yeah no so nba drama is tabloidy and silly i love it nhl drama is utter incompetence
like hey should we be allowed to money launder anymore um should should we be able to trade
this guy who super doesn't want to be traded like sorry what were you gonna say well i was
gonna say have you do you follow at no context humans on twitter i do not but probably so it's
basically human beings being stupid and the nhl reminds me of no at no context humans or out of
context human race is what they call themselves i follow unhinged tweets that's good too i haven't
been featured yes uh down down bad tweets are good too uh down bad tweets are good but this is like
the point you were making well it's just it's i don't know what i what i watch when i watch out
of context humans i'm like that's the nhl that's why they make news it's because they fell over
themselves and down a bunch of stairs that's what happened anyway we stopped playing all the time
simply uh simply stop playing with like alarming regularity just stop playing for large periods of
time two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar
raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret cancer
foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of
life-saving research together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear
of cancer register today at pmcfwalk.ca okay so first off i just want to say steve wore his um
beaver jersey on the lfr which was amazing and uh keep doing it i don't know i don't i think
they're really nice jerseys i really like it you disrespected my favorite jersey how dare you the
white outdoor one i like that yeah but i've come around yeah but you said oh they lost so the
jersey means nothing to me no i mean you pooped in your diaper and then leo said i've been also
pooping my diaper i positioned it as i'm the weird one though i'm admitting wrongdoing and you're
just shitting all over me now you're filling your diaper now we just got a room full of full diapers
Adam, what did you shit yourself over?
Don't worry, it's coming.
I haven't revealed myself yet.
Just a room full of poopy diapers.
By the way, for all the new parents out there,
a neighbor gave me unsolicited advice, and it was wonderful.
Do you have a diaper genie?
You know, one of those devices that you put diapers in.
Okay, well, knock that off.
Because for poop diapers, it doesn't work.
Well, no, you put the poop in the toilet,
and then you put the diaper in the genie oh jesus that's what i do oh that feels like a lot of work
he grabs it with his hand okay i'm sorry for anyone eating no you grab the diaper and then
you drop it in the toilet and you take the diaper put it back or you could do this because i have
dog poop bags because i have a dog yeah what you do is you take the poopy diaper you put it in the
dog poop bag and you put it outside and you keep uh a steel trash can either outside or in the
garage and you put it in there so that it doesn't stink up your house somebody just told you a much
better idea eight seconds before you said what you said no no so oh yeah wait no no walk outside
when you got a toilet in your house that's how i know you don't have kids like every poop you can
just just plop into the toilet adam well as they get older you can okay not right away no but like
not that black goo that they have the first six months or whatever but six months well they're
the first the black goo the first week and then i'm so sorry it's like green algae the rest of it
but this is once they start to have human human bathroom breaks what you do steve is steve is
right on one thing if you're ever away at someone's place and you have diapers um the the thing to do
is you you leave it in the living room no you bring dog bags in and actually if you tie them
uh like around themselves and seal them shut um you can just throw them out in any garbage and
they won't smell at all uh which is really really good but always take the number twos and put them
in the in the toilet where possible because it will eliminate most of the smell and then you're
just flushing it away and it's gone i'm gonna i'm still gonna do the dog you can do that you can do
that too yeah you do that whatever you want to do seems like you gotta walk outside each time
walk outside yeah you said you got to take your bin you got a driveway no what you do is you
huck it into the middle of the driveway and listen i'm ready to move okay so um trotter
may believe new jersey devils wednesday night now this was a game where i was actually at the game
and i have to tell you um uh natalie was it was our first game together your hair looked great
listen there's nothing wrong with my hair my hair is in i know you're making fun of no no no it
legit look great it looked great adam the feathers beautiful i don't know if he's joking i'm not
freaking joking i do does anyone believe him do you see his face look at the camera okay it was
good game good game so here's what here's what was interesting so so natalie's like this fucking
team can they just start on time it was the first period was sloppy it was a mess it was sloppy and
and here's the thing though the leafs kind of came out and still outshot the devils as you would
expect them to do 11-3 and then the devils score the first goal and this is how i know my girlfriend
natalie does not watch the leafs this season as closely as i do she was very hurt by the way they
lost to montreal last year so it's taken her a while to come back and and so i said to her i
said i said they i said they're coming on and the new jersey scored she's like see i told you i said
no no no no you don't understand you don't understand first off jersey's on the second
half as half of a back-to-back so we're reaching that point in the game where your legs start to
get really tired number two the Toronto Maple Leafs this is their final four if they go down
one nothing they're going to win they're going to come on and honestly it was like minute 10 of the
second period the Toronto Maple Leafs started to really look like the Toronto Maple Leafs and I'm
talking really look like the Toronto Maple Leafs I was sitting on the side of I unfortunately picked
the side of the arena and I wasn't sure which one because I was you know you know when you're
picking the ends yeah um so i was uh in the section underneath the restaurant and i thought
that i was going to get the leafs at my end on the offensive zone two times that game but i only
got the second period all right right right but low key that's the best place still to sit because
a you get to watch the play develop b the bar is right behind you so you don't have to stand in
line for beer and you can get real cocktails and c the bathrooms are there and there's no lineup
oh which is big for you because of the outdoor game i gotta pee sometimes you gotta pee anyway
long story short you could always just do it in the concourse and then bring it in and flush it
i saw the ilia mckay of shorthanded goal it came down on our end the ilia mckay of shorthanded goal
was a shocking that he can do that with his hands now oh yeah because he's got stone hands most of
the time number two the arena popped oh yeah it's a great goal that arena popped it was a shorthanded
But here's the best part, the best takeaway, was that at the end of the game, people were going nuts.
They were going absolutely crazy.
Peter Mrazik chants were going, people were pumped for Peter Mrazik.
It wasn't Bronx cheers.
These people were, and you could see Leaf fans just shaking with excitement as they were leaving.
Now, I know it's New Jersey, but they got a win for Peter Mrazik.
Giordano looked good because he was boring and really shut plays down, and that was awesome.
Justin Bieber was there.
People were really jacked about that.
Doug Gilmore was there giving away the, you know, honoring the veterans that were.
And I have not seen Scotiabank Arena that loud in five years.
Like, I think the last time I was there actually was a playoff game against Boston.
And the first little bit of it was a little bit slow.
And then Mitch Marder blocked that shot and people lost their minds.
But it took that to get this loud.
They were crazy.
It was great.
You know, some buildings are just loud all the time.
Nashville is loud all the time.
The Islanders are loud all the time.
Tampa's loud.
Tampa's loud.
The Leafs need pops because we all just watch nervously.
That's why we can't be bothered with the Go Leafs Go chant.
My favorite thing at every Leafs game is seeing how quickly that chant dies.
And I usually join it.
It happens.
My rule is three.
It didn't do too bad in Hamilton when the three of us were there.
Yeah, it did.
It was bad.
Okay.
This one guy tried twice.
And it's like, buddy, you're at a Leaf game.
Yeah.
Knock it off.
There's also a Sabres home game.
This is true.
True.
It's true, you can tell by the makeup of the crowd
Yeah, very Sabres
I mean it was like any Sabres home game
It was mostly Leaf fans
This one made more sense
Sabres home game
So I wanted to say that
So I wanted to ask you guys
Because the TV view, you get to see more on TV
You do
What did you think of Mark Giordano's debut performance
With the Toronto Maple Leafs
I liked the veteran treatment
Where you get a penalty, but no you don't
that was interesting how was that as a fan there like did you know what the hell was going on we
couldn't figure out what he got the penalty for we didn't know first off who got the penalty
oh right because we couldn't figure it out because it wasn't a penalty and then he then he goes to
the box we're like okay and sometimes they show the replays and sometimes they don't right and i
think that they're actually i think nhl and mlb and nba they all have to be careful with what
replays they show because they don't want to
enrage the crowd because
oh yeah so like baseball I don't even think
if they if there's a if there's a call from
an ump that is questionable like a called
strike they won't replay it on no they
changed that was it two years
ago they now they show all replays
and having not been in two years I've never seen
that like listen I got
news for you I paid to be here
show the fucking replay right you
want my money show the replay right
right so like what what oh you
You know what's great is when you're paying customers is just sitting there confused.
Show the replay, you actual bunch of babies.
Imagine men in their 50s going, what if the people who paid to be here hold us accountable?
No, we can't have that.
So when they pulled him out of the thing, another pop.
Because people were like, ah!
No one's ever seen that.
I've seen it twice ever, and that was number two.
Like, it's super, super rare.
Did they look at a replay, the refs themselves?
Because that's not allowed.
The refs aren't allowed to just go check for a call.
I think the other ref just went over and said,
was there a penalty?
Yeah, because they must have just huddled and talked about it.
Which they can't do that, right?
It was a trip, right?
Supposedly.
Yeah, and his stick does appear to make contact with who is a Thomas Tatar.
But it also seemed like he leaped onto his ass like Yoshi in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
Right?
I like that.
And then he goes down.
so i don't know it was a soft call i'm just shocked it happened because of everything we've
seen like last night alone uh swayman got called for a trip trying to make a save i don't know if
you guys caught that yes yes yeah he was making a save with his paddle and uh i forget the offensive
player who's coming on and trying to score and he tripped over the stick that swayman had in his hand
and they called the trip on the goalie and then there was another incident where i'm trying to
the last time i saw a trip called right that's what that's what i'm saying that's such an
egregious thing to call it's ridiculous and they didn't reverse it and then there was a cross check
by cassian on um i forget who he was cross-checking but then it went and cassian got the puck after
he cross-checked the player and he passes over dry side on dry schools got the game uh go ahead
goal it was philip pronick i don't know who it was or no i'm thinking of there was a slash too
there was a right but that dude they've been brutal recently those two incidents happened
last night egregious calls i don't know you're calling things that clearly impact the game one
led directly to a goal and then you you all of a sudden in this leafs game you're like oh you know
what we're gonna take a measured approach with this giordano call we're gonna think about it
we're gonna talk about it and then we're gonna reverse it we're gonna reverse it what like what
happened the other all the other fucking 800 nhl games this season but if you're a devils fan you're
losing your mind yeah do you remember the icing call that mitch marner was mad at yes and the
whole arena got up in arms and he mitch marner beat him to the pot no it's not that or he beat
him to the red line or the hash marks or whatever it is oh because it was at the other end of the
it was not even close it was not even close that's another one where they could have just
been like oh we were wrong drop it at center ice yeah no but so why on this giordano incident
do the refs all of a sudden have a completely different attitude towards refereeing a hockey
game that they haven't had all in the history of the nhl i think because they're playing in toronto
and there's a lot more eyeballs on you when you're playing in toronto that had been called
that here's what it is the the ref the refs were like listen it could have been a penalty it may
not have been but i say we this is what they said in the huddle i say we take it back because i don't
want to get a call tomorrow i don't really tomorrow's my day off and i really don't feel
jumping on a zoom call see that's giving him too much credit i think it's pure incompetence and the
trade-off was the devils while trying to um tie the game were allowed to just almost break pure
engvall's neck yeah but he broke their neck yes he did the giraffe sea biscuit the giraffe
broke their neck with a shorthanded goal with a shorthanded goal is the 11th of the season because
he is not booty anymore he is actually great quite good yeah he's been playing awesome i i think i
forget how young he is sometimes yeah you know yeah some consistency in refereeing would be nice
oh jesse yeah well you keep asking for that bud i will i will forever they're the most consistent
refs just ask them uh i think i think when you when you look at the toronto maple leafs game i
think it was it was shaky to start but it was nice because before the game peter marazic said
listen whatever's happened i'm just throwing it behind me i'm done i'm not even gonna talk about
it good like he comes off waivers and and he played like it some good saves the first goal
went off labushkin not much you can do about that he'll have one goal the yeah the second goal i i
didn't love that that went in but also i could see how it did he made a stupendous first save
it's on his teammates to help him out after that and they didn't the one thing i have to say about
marazic's game that really bothered me and remember i got to see him two times at my end of the rink
is rebound control.
The rebound now,
and I understand that the Toronto Maple Leafs
are terrible in front of their own net
unless LaBushkin's out there.
I get it.
But you see it time and time and time again.
When you angle,
like goalies who are really great,
the puck just dies when it hits them
and it goes into the corner.
With Mrazek, it's like chest, shoulder, shoulder,
kick, boom, right out,
like right out to the point again.
He punches back.
The puck hits him.
He hits it back.
it's like tennis yeah and i and like i i understand that he's kind of a he is a bit of a
like a like it's a squirrely squirrely goalie squirrely is the right right way for it um but
at a certain point it would be nice if he just if it just died on it do you know what i mean i went
into the corners that's there's a lot of nail biting with peter morales yes yes there there
are goalies who allow rebounds but they make it uh easy on themselves to retrieve eric shalgren's
rebound control isn't amazing but it the it's like the puck is more it hits them more dull
like it doesn't go for as big of an adventure yeah shalgren he's not like we're not looking
at him being like oh he's an outstanding goal he's one of the top in the nhl or anything like
that but at least we feel a little bit more confident than with morassic there was a moment
morassic is so erratic there was a moment where he did a full 360 spin and i'm like i'm positive
no coach ever taught you but he does something two or three times a game where i'm like you
were never taught that no one ever showed you that as advice words creativity man yeah he's
just vibing did they ever figure out the left foot in front thing do you watch for that still
No, I was watching for the puck to hopefully not go behind him.
So next time he plays, I'll have a look.
I want to ask you guys, back to Giordano and Blackwell,
but Giordano specifically,
did you not feel a little bit more calm defensively for the Leafs?
They're just, to me anyway, it felt calmer.
Flames fans might like this.
He ironically, I thought, behaved the way they portrayed Dion Phaneuf.
he came in and he just said to timothy lilligren all right so here's how you play hockey by the
way and he just sort of dictated the game here's how you do it here's what we're doing here's what
i'm gonna do for you all right now pucks in your end of the net you do that for me it's just really
dependable really solid and not afraid to like make stretch passes he didn't have uh this sort
of simple game where he's like i'm just gonna dump it you know no he was making they had him
on the first power play unit yeah he he didn't he didn't show up to play like anyone but margier
dano which i really liked that's really appreciated it's it's confidence which is all this team needs
did you see did you see the tweet of someone named nick on leaf's twitter it's like i'm not
afraid of the panthers i'm not afraid of the lightning i'm not afraid of the bruins the teams
that the team that scares me the most is the toronto maple and like to me watching their penalty
kill crush and then watching them struggle to defend five on five shows you how mental it is
oh yeah it's it's the amazon on demand documentary the you know they got ghosts in their car ghosts
under their bed or demons or whatever it was that paul mclean said because their uh penalty
kill they have confidence in their penalty kill they're the only team that consistently gets two
or three two-on-ones per penalty kill like they're they're unreal because they have a bravado about
them they have a uh confidence in their own ability and then oh boy when it's five on five
oh shit they have no idea what's going on no idea what's going on but i thought geo looked pretty
good they look pretty good blackwell what'd you guys think he looked like a fourth liner okay
um he helped me realize how not small the leafs are because people talk about like the leaves
like they're all colin blackwell and then colin blackwell showed up and oh they're actually a
pretty normal size team yeah that's a little guy but he's not afraid of anything using it a little
more sometimes it'd be good yeah but well for the rest of the team yeah yeah no he's he's tenacious
though i like him jesse if i if i wrote the highlights for that game or if i did like i was
if i was a sports center and i had to write the teleprompter for one of the hosts i would do
something uh some sort of pun with the flip side jerseys and the reverse rolls and matthews
saucing it to marner because that was the flip side roll right that little pass that matthews
sent over to mitch marner in the air and just landed perfectly in front of him he snaps at home
that usually is marner to matthews and it was beautiful to see mitch marner trusting his shot
using his shot and becoming a threat um where people have to actually watch out for uh him
scoring goals he takes slap shots now matthews has always been an underrated playmaker oh yeah
but now he plays with an underrated goal scorer and it's it's made that line man for as much as
the second line has struggled as you can't break those three up how much how much is the up to now
i think it's 20 no uh goals from 27 career high on the year for mitch marner he's becoming
a legitimate threat on that line it's wonderful to see it i hope it keeps up in the playoffs
question question for you guys for both of you when it comes to mitch marner is that the
development of his shot because i don't think that shot that he he scored on was like basically
a one-time right yeah yeah i don't think i've ever seen him do that before this season it's
it's he's diversified his skill set and he's also shooting how many times like i swear i
This isn't hyperbole in years past.
He would have passed it back.
That's not hyperbole.
No, that is a true thing.
Or maybe he sends it the other way, to the weak side.
He used to be the king of the, yeah, but if he got the pass, it was going in.
Well, what percent of the time does he get the pass?
Right.
Stop it.
Shoot.
We're seeing Mitch Marner shoot the puck, which is incredible to see.
Shooting makes him a better playmaker.
because it just makes everything less predictable.
You can anticipate, well, he's giving it to Austin every time,
but you're going to get burned.
It's great.
It's like what happened with Freddie Anderson.
He's like, when he scored against Freddie Anderson last week,
he said in the interview,
I thought you were talking about Freddie Anderson's shot.
No, no, Mitch Marner, when Mitch Marner scored on Freddie Anderson.
It hasn't improved a lick since he got in this league.
Freddie Anderson's shot is as good today as it was when he was a rookie,
and that's not good enough.
Yeah, I know.
I wish you just put more effort in that, Freddie.
But when Mitch Marner came in on him,
and you could tell Freddie was moving,
and Marner said after the game, he's like,
he knew I was a pass-first guy, so I shot.
Yeah.
I mean, that's just using the information that you have as a goalie.
You've got to make ridiculously quick decisions.
You're probably going to remember, all right,
I was beating blocker side by this guy last time,
or all these little details.
Oh, this guy passes.
I wish the Leafs would shoot more on two-on-ones.
Yeah, me too.
I wish every team would.
Yeah, but we all came up in the generation of playing NHL from EA Sports
that the two-on-one, you're passing and scoring.
It's an automatic goal.
It's a cross-crease goal.
It's not anymore.
It's not in the game anymore.
It's so frustrating.
I hate it.
Well, as a defenseman, I am kind of here for it.
That was my Marek Svato special, where I just blast down the line
and whoever was with him, pass, goal, shoot, boom, boom.
yeah he was he was one of the deadly water bugs crazy years ago kyle wellwood kyle wellwood was
very good but his handling wasn't good enough he wasn't like merrick's vatos on that one um so
anyway long story short leafs and devils obviously again they're the worst team in the league or one
of but i i also was watching the devils and i'm like adam they're in film yeah in the division
the devils what is the what are they doing the devils what are they trying to do
like their their goaltending is astonishing yeah well they don't have either goaltender
they went into the season with but the problem is they just sort of are sitting in their
for lack of a better term they're sitting in their own filth like they their goalies went
down and they're like well what if we did nothing about that actually and what and let me ask you
this what incentive is there for them to do anything they're not a contender they've been
out of the playoff race for three months you know what i mean but what are they building towards
like the big splash with dougie hamilton last year i don't know but like what are you really
doing i thought they they thought they were a lot better than they were i thought coming into
the season they thought they could contend in that division and looking at how weak it's turned out
they probably had a good idea about that hey if we can get a little couple players the guys play
a little well we can actually make a little splash here and it just isn't true well they just don't
have the the guys he sure looks fine um he looks fine though uh hughes looks fine fine actually i
think even a little bit better than fine okay he looks fat but but like when you look at this who's
gonna score goals for them dougie hamilton on the double minor in the third period shambolic he's
Okay, so every time I see a New Jersey Devils highlight pack now on Sports Center, it's him sort of bag skating it going after the guy because they were six on five and the guy scoring on the empty net.
I've seen it like three times in the last three weeks.
It's always, and it's always Dougie Hamilton sort of watch, but he's not even really skating that hard.
You didn't get to see this at the game, but when Subban flipped the puck over the glass, there was a great slow-mo of him going, and Bunting going.
yeah the whole the whole arena did that the whole arena because it's the funniest penalty to take
i love that ah on ir for the new jersey devils just for their goalie situation
jonathan bernier mckenzie blackwood andrew hammond all three are oh they just got him
They just got him.
He's on IR.
When did that happen?
I don't know when he was injured,
but Blackwood also this year has an 894 in 23 games.
They just have not received goaltending.
902 from Bernier in 10 games.
And yeah, Hammond, they just got him, and now he's on IR.
And just to give you an idea of how disappointing the Devils season is,
one of the things I remember listening to just before the season on 32 Thoughts
was um they were talking about blackwood and his vaccination status because remember he was one of
the holdouts for a while and they were talking about um his eligibility to play in games in
canada in march and they were talking about games i think specifically the one you were
going to or went to and i think that game was rescheduled from january oh was it okay well
anyway they they have some canadian dates and one of the things that we're talking about is those
games are going to be important points if they have aspirations of making the playoff oh you
won't be able to play in these playoff games dude and like if you look at the eastern conference
like the good teams aren't gonna get bad anytime soon montreal is going to be right back to relevant
next year i don't know how much of a threat but they'll be right back to relevant uh detroit is
going to pass new jersey in short order it you could argue they already have buffalo is going
to pass new jersey in short order you could argue they already have the islanders will be back
guys what are you doing all of those teams you named are ahead of the new jersey devils in the
standings this year it's just the habs it's the new jersey devils and then the montreal canadians
in the east you'd like to think the flyers have too much money to keep sucking this bad but cliff
chuck fletcher's their gm so it's really a race to the bottom next year of ottawa and new jersey
and i'm also looking at this look at new jersey's goal is okay so bernier had a good season good
couple seasons in detroit he's injured this year but he's got the best stats on the team he played
10 games and he's 500 his goals against average was a 306 and his save percentage is a 902
i mean is it better than john gillies is 380 goals against average and 884 this is the problem sure
or mackenzie blackwood who's played the most out of any of the goalies in the devils 894 to 329
or nico dawes who played on uh wednesday night who has a 901 and a 301 goals against average
honestly 901 on new jersey is herculane it is but i do i do need to say like you're not going to win
games if you're averaging three goals against per night and they're spending a lot on d and
well i mean suban's contract comes off the books here but suban hamilton butcher oh butcher's
expensive that's right remember but like look at the here's the thing too they can't score
jesper bratt obviously you know 21 goals that's great 42 assists jack hughes 21 goals those are
the two team leaders 21 and they got he sure at 18 Dawson Mercer at 16 um Sharanovich and Zach
are like 16 and 13 that's it that's not a lot of scoring guys Jack Hughes did miss a chunk of the
early part of the show after being I'm just saying okay so if Jack Hughes had 25 goals then
that's still it's not Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratton and even Nico Huescher I'm talking about
here it's everybody else there's no supporting cast well this is the thing right it oh this guy
got hurt every team goes through that and some teams weather the storm pretty well they can't
they can't weather nothing yeah everything would have to go right and then barely they're squeaking
in so my question is you know the whole point of this conversation was what is their identity
what are they going towards what do you want what do you want to be five bucks says they're one of
the teams who claimed harry sataria oh probably five uh i think just a hope and a prayer that
they're healthy next year which uh it's not a great strategy is it not no okay no they got a
deal they got a deal suban in the offseason it sounds like that'll get done oh no he's his deals
up oh it's walking away oh my bad yeah that's why we had that conversation about the move in
of my trade deadline right right right my bad like jesse's got their cap running up with their
picks they have three picks in the fourth round like same first same second same third they're
not they're they're not behaving like a rebuilding team but they're not playing like a good or even
relevant team they're kind of in a world of hurt here man they're in the worst spot because they
thought they were good coming into this season bad on accident on people hate that phrase but
it's a phrase and we're using it the new jersey devils this year were bad on accident and that's
the worst place you can be uh as a professional sports team when you're building a franchise and
this summer they have to take a look at if they want to tear it down or if they want to try again
tear down what tear down whatever they got if they want to actually be the rebuilding team and
actually supply their franchise with some draft picks you know like that's the idea of tearing it
down or if they want to try and go for it again man like the devils don't have multiple first
rounders or multiple second rounders or multiple third rounders they got three fourths this year
that's it they got otherwise they got their normal stable of draft picks
i yeah okay so so we got to move on from the devils but it sure it's bleak is what i'm saying
it is bleak it's interesting uh like i don't know what teams are thinking because now we
gotta wait for the draft lottery for this year that's gonna change the fortunes of
you know a few teams dramatically but then everyone's talking about how great the 2023
draft is and i wonder how many teams that suck this year are just gonna be like yeah what's
another year if you're the devils like look at the east what are you building towards just suck
again and then hopefully and get one of the first 32 picks that's all they have well and then but
hopefully they're able to uh rise just as everyone else is falling because like the Leafs can't do
this forever the Lightning can't do this forever the Panthers can't do this forever the Bruins
can't do this forever you know and then you can be I don't know I think the Bruins can do this
forever no well yeah you know what maybe I'm wrong but like three or four years from now which is an
eternity from now uh rangers versus devils could be something but could be boy that's a long time
i think i give that one of the rangers um okay lastly here before we get into the uh the press
conference because it's a shorter show on fridays we got to talk about the fact that if getting to
don i've scored last night hilarious and he still doesn't know if he's property of vegas or not
they have to trade him they have to well they still don't think they do they need scoring
but but here's the thing was this trade ever even nixed yeah yeah yeah it was official there was an
official oh yeah so you must have missed i missed the official statement yeah no the nhl officially
canceled the trade uh was it two days ago wednesday afternoon really in vegas oh that's
probably why i missed it because i was like yeah all right there was no issue to tweet like welcome
back i'm getting yeah it was funny but like they they made their like pr on the nhl pr twitter and
all that stuff okay yeah so it was officially done so they don't have to um but they have two
players in particular martinez and stone yeah who they can't activate off ltir and that's not good
for a few reasons one you're gonna need them literally need them to win games but if they
find a way to win games heading into the playoffs so that they don't need to do it uh then martinez
in stone's first hockey in god knows how long is gonna be game one of the playoffs and that's not
the most comfortable position to be in we've seen it though we've seen it we've seen that a million
times we've seen it work but we saw it work last year with kucherov or how about this wouldn't it
be nice if you not only got into the playoffs but avoided a wild card like you want your first
round opponent to be calgary or colorado you know no thanks you know they could work their
themselves into uh potentially playing the kings or somehow there's a scenario where they could
play the oilers you know like it's it's listen it's not the abs or the freaking flames there
are only three points out of third in their division yeah which edmonton currently holds
la by the way coming on strong yeah they've had a sneaky really good year and uh we haven't talked
about them a whole lot and they're gonna be in the playoffs like i like comfortably yeah yeah
i think with vegas though again i i wonder you like okay dodonov they got because they couldn't
score enough goals and now they're gonna trade them and go back in essentially with the same
team they had last year obviously jack eichel's there now too potentially riley smith yeah and
here's the other thing i mean it's an incredible opportunity for a team like buffalo who would
probably be on his no trade list uh like arizona who would probably be on his no trade list but a
team that's got the cap space to take him on because chances are you're probably going to get
like a first first round pick for that like and for sure they may have to do this because if they
don't make the playoffs that's a problem there's millions of dollars at stake here millions not
just his contract but like home dates in the playoff and i just i just wonder you know do you
trade do you trade to don up now even though you need the goal scoring and do you send a first
round pick with him this that's it's a very good point adam because trading him guarantees them
nothing yeah i don't i just sit on this like okay the trade didn't work out one the vegas golden
the nights have the worst reputation of treating players unfairly in the entire National Hockey
League.
They're great as you come in.
Right.
But once they're done with you, they're done with you and there's no celebration of you
leaving the door.
You know that the thing with like the cheerleaders and the mascot and the limo?
Yeah, they don't do that on the way out.
Nope.
They barely tell you that you're leaving and they'll hand you a note and you'll find out
on Twitter or whatever and you're out the door.
So if they go and they trade to Donov again, because we need to correct this from last
episode where we say where we said that if you get traded after the trade deadline you can play in
the regular season you can't your season is done and so they trade the donov now he can't play
anymore he has to go to a team he probably doesn't want to because he wants to stay in vegas he's
playing for them now's the time where hey we're probably not going to catch the stars like i know
you guys are talking about hey we might get a a division spot there like in the top three but i
don't think they catch the oilers i don't think they catch the stars season's probably done for
the vegas golden knights sit on this roster that you have regroup in the offseason do the right
thing by the player for the first time in your freaking franchise lives yeah do the right thing
by a player and just play out the rest of the season if you make the playoffs we got patrick
stone for the playoffs oh my god we got this amazing team and it's on off look at us go we've
100 million dollars cap on in the playoffs we can do this thing but if you don't make it play out
the year regroup next season that's what i'm thinking let me throw this out there uh saturday
night they well sorry saturday afternoon they take on the chicago blackhawks that's a team
that's going nowhere fast right right w next to that one you ideally would like to pencil w next
to that one then your next two games after a few days off you get a uh you get two games in seattle
against the kraken you'd like to pencil w in against those two as well hopefully then you get
a home and home with the
Vancouver Canucks. Ooh, that's tough.
Who you are battling for that last spot.
Then
the Arizona Coyotes
who have been feisty.
I'm not going to pencil W there.
Then the Canucks again.
So three of
four against the Canucks. Then they get
the Flames. That one's going to be tough.
And then they get the Oilers
who they are directly
fighting for that spot. The Devils
you'd like to pencil in w there the capitals that one's tough sharks you'd like to pencil in a w
there stars their third last game of the season is against like that that could be a blood feud
is it it's against the stars it's against the stars in dallas that could be like for the
playoff spot yeah and then their final two games of the season uh chicago you'd like to pencil in
a w there and then your last game of the season you can't pencil and shit it's against the st
louis blues in st louis so the schedule there's a favors the golden yeah but but do they have
any type of goaltending like that's can't swat just went on waivers uh not waivers sorry injured
reserve no yeah dude she just signed harry satari we need the chance maybe they tried
wow by the way are you gonna play for the coyotes have we found that out yet
yeah have we found out if he's reporting
like we know he's unhappy
is he unhappy do we know that I believe they said
that on the CJ show oh I didn't
I didn't I always look at you because I still think
you produce it but no it's producer Nick
Nick's on that there's a Nick
fantastic job Walmart alum
that's that's what I learned from that show
that was a great show
they're on a heater I hope Logan Thompson can
win a couple games for the Knights
Yuri Patera
is that the
name of the other goalie oh yes oh i believe you yes that is him right there he was a 2017 draft
pick oh by the the golden knights held on to a draft pick everybody from their inaugural draft
it's a miracle that is a miracle he was a sixth round pick so they couldn't like find any buyers
they tried to trade them i'm sure they did i make i'm sure they did hey this is a player that our
scouts feel as good we'd like to get rid of him as fast as possible please the vegas golden knights
experience vegas oh god good on them for always trying to win according to craig i'll be the
according to craig s morgan at craig s morgan or just craig morgan for the rest of us he said it
could be a little while before harry satiri compete completes the immigration process and
joins the coyotes the estimate right now is about 10 days and that was of the as of the 23rd so that
was two days ago i know he'll he'll help them though i know some of the canadian teams which
is weird because the leafs are the one who signs them some of the canadian teams were hesitant to
claim them on the waivers because of uh him getting the passport and all that stuff figured
out to get into canada well not the sins according to cj from the cj show but the sins were one of
the teams the sins were one of the teams who claimed them they have anton forsberg who they
just re-signed and philip gustafson who they like why'd they claim him it's a meme lols please
listen to me it's for the lulz they think it's hilarious and you know what it is sure if you're
if you want to fuck with the leafs that's the easiest way to do it because it's not like they're
gonna beat them you know they might they might win a game or two like i remember a couple years ago
the senators beat the leafs and they played the leafs goal song which i thought was a funny troll
like it was really good and the thing is is that like that here's the problem that when you suck
you have to take the little victories it's their stanley cup totally yeah hang a screenshot
like i don't know can you hang an nft from the rafters and maybe that sound maybe maybe the
leafs like and somebody somebody responded to uh dm me the other day and they had a really good
point they're like listen the leafs use waivers more than everybody else too yes and they do oh
yeah oh my god they do i saw they were up there the expectation they have 23 players on waivers
over the last they had 23 players claimed on waivers the last three years which is the most
I think it's 12
Maybe I'm thinking 23 on waivers
12 were claimed
So it's about 50%
The point is they had the most out there
So my thinking is
Maybe the Leafs ought to stop using it
They're in a cap situation
Where they have to
But
To your point, I don't see Vegas doing this shit
No
I mean, not at the same rate
No other team has lost more than 6
the Leafs have lost 12 yeah but they probably put double the amount of other teams too I wonder
what the percentages are I can understand Kyle Dubas's frustration I get it but I also feel like
there's got to be some sort of conversation about hey we use this a lot and maybe it's not working
out for us the way we want and the reason they use it a lot is because of the 11 million dollar
guys on the team and they have to find all of these extra pieces to fit around who don't make
a lot of money and who have to be waiver eligible and they have to try and get them through yep
now the the other way to avoid that potentially is to have more players who are in the first i
think it's the first three years of their deal where they can be sent down at will elcs yeah
yeah if you can have younger players more elc players maybe you don't have to worry about this
as much as a general manager i've really utilized that there it is i i think that's what the leafs
are going to do a lot more of next season.
I think so, too.
There's a very...
Listen, the focus should be the playoffs,
but there's a fascinating
Wayne Simmons conversation approaching.
Which is Wayne retires.
With a year left on his contract?
I don't think so.
Or maybe he doesn't retire, but they...
He's injured.
Yeah.
Roby-da.
He's got an extra bed on his island.
Is he a Roby daddy?
well and the more the maybe even more fascinating conversation is um oh boy don't make me say it
ellis spats yeah he's that is useful he's not he's actually he actually is useful he is but
if we're filled if we're talking about filling out the bottom of your roster
and should you be doing it with the guys that you mentioned and this isn't to say i'm not a
wayne train fan you should have heard when he got into it against the devils the the arena's roof
almost blasted off people love wayne simmons and i'm one of the playoffs you'll be like oh that's
why yeah but maybe it's better useful as a 13th forward or something like that and not and not
filling out the bottom line like they did last year with joe thornton spetsa and simmons right
you need to have wayne simmons was really effective against the montreal canadians until
he got cross-checked in the face by joel edmondson but at least edmondson was suspended two games
kidding it was a fine sickly anyway let's get to the uh the press conference i almost said the
trade deadline two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step
and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret
cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of

yesterday was a big deal on the stupid i had to check the name of it i thought this was the kk
P-N. Noxian CAC's P-N.
K-A-K.
Because when we do K-K, it's a little
too close to other things.
I think we've got to do CAC.
How about M-P-P-P-N?
There you go.
I like that. I think that's the
biggest guest
the network has ever had.
At the time
of their peak of
fame and performance
and excellence in Canadian history.
Marie-Philippe Poulin was on
noxian cact yesterday and she was absolutely incredible and one thing that everybody who
listened to it yesterday says uh about that episode is it's so chill it's such a chill vibe
because they're just friends and you don't get these athletes at these levels in these scenarios
where you just hear them chatting with friends just chatting yeah because they just know them
and she tells the story about how uh there's two things i want to mention she tells the story about
how she ruptured her her spleen at practice one day oh my god but they took her to a hospital
and she didn't speak english very well and uh her parents didn't speak english very well
and so so the doctor's trying to explain to them okay marie she ruptured her spleen and then
somebody somebody asked her what happened and she goes i broke i broke my spline is it is her story
to all her friends and then like months later she has to clarify that she actually rubbed her
spleen and it it's a great story and uh before that she was talking about her she uh she had
to be moved over to like uh an english school to play hockey and all that stuff and she knew
three words in english knew yes she knew no and she knew toaster well these are the important
words yes yes no toaster and that's her that was her entrance into the english language and that
it was so funny it's such a great episode go listen how else would someone request hot bread
you know so toasty bread hot crispy bread uh that's it was fun to see and you know the whole
point of noxian kax and the whole show by the way in case you didn't know was that you know we saw
and and this was honestly my pitch to the pwhpa was we keep seeing these players come on national
television and they have to be serious and they have to be buttoned down and they they are clearly
under a lot of stress because every time you talk to somebody it's like wow we're going to talk to
hillary knight well hillary knight can't have fun in that interview you know marie fully fluent can't
have fun in that interview and the reason they can't have fun is because they're expected to
speak for the entire game it's one of the only sports where every interview you have to speak
for the entire sport which isn't fair yeah and so my thing and and this is what you know we were
talking to liz we were talking to corral before we even started the show and said listen the whole
thing here is you know these people that's great that is awesome but i want you to create an
environment where you guys can just be you the whole way that we are going to see the women's
game grow is if you fall in love with the characters in it and marie philippe who lands
a character you know she's someone with a real fun personality and you never see this side of her
because it's like in-game interviews or it's you know tsn or sports net or sometimes maybe tnt or
espn and it's like well how do you feel about the state of the women's game go right and it's like
what the hell is she supposed to do no matter how she answers that it's going to be wrong so you
have to sort of give a non-answer for a lot of these players it's just anyway the whole point
was it's supposed to be fun and it is it's a great show and what they've been able to do in
eight weeks on that show is nothing short of remarkable like i i somebody messaged me the
other day and said this is the first time i've heard this show and marie philly plan was the
the one to get me into it and and then they said i have to check out the other episodes and i said
yeah and it's not um it's it's one of those things where it doesn't feel like a new show
doesn't act like a new show it feels like it's been around it's been around yeah and and i and
i'm not just blowing smoke for the sake of blowing smoke or because our network brand is on it along
with the pwhpa noxi and cax as people have worked extremely hard on this to create an environment
where we can push women's hockey forward in the media this is our this is our contribution to
doing what we think is the right thing which is you know it being a game that people are taking
is just as seriously as a men's game our contribution is getting out of the way yeah
let them do it no no not our country i meant our as in like noxian cax and the network and
everything right we want we want this to be the start of of you know you getting to know these
players on a level that you hadn't heard or seen them before and i think that was the key right
no one else provided a platform for that and we've all worked in industry in the media industry
before and within living memory all of us have heard oh don't put women's hockey no one cares
that is i we've heard that from managers yep unless it's the olympics and then all of a sudden
oh we're gonna care every four years yes so which she can't have well it's not no anyway long story
short it's it was great and good for them i'm so freaking proud of them they've just done such an
amazing job they kick ass they're so great um jesse today is friday which means steve dangle
adam's history corner it is sdpn fan friday damn i was on such a heater you use the hashtag sdpn
fan fridays on twitter and on your instagram story and you will be entered to win a 50 gift card to
our shop on sdpn.ca we can pick up some nice game over merch like steve dangle is wearing
and adam wilde yes today i retweeted something that you quote tweeted from a fan who submitted
their entry for sdp and fan fridays what was this one particular well jesse was the one who pointed
out to me honestly so we're being a little bit uh uh so jesse's like hey did you see the tweet i
just retweeted and i said no and he's like okay well somebody actually did the stupid thing you
keep talking about and went to the maple leaf gardens loblaws and oh no lo and behold at center
ice which is still marked they said hey guys made it to old center ice at maple leaf gardens loblaws
and no shit the tuna was right there because the tuna cans look like bucks and you can drop them
in center ice do you get it how much also my kid says uh steve yells too much that's from rob
your kid's wrong first of all your kid's wrong second of all they're right your kid's right
but third of all how much ruined cans of tuna does that loblaws location go through every year
i think that's on chicken of the sea to shore up their tuna cans don't you think wow wow wow
you know i was shocked that the tuna was actually there and this was where else would it be i kept
how many years have i told the two of you this and neither of you believed me it's not that i
didn't believe you it's more that i was just like i don't really care no yeah it's the same i
remembered it every time it seemed like i didn't care it was me going well yeah i've heard you say
that number number 80 he's gonna tell me yeah all right you go drop a tuna can at center right
here's grandpa with his story about maple leaf garden you know how much did the tuna cost i bet
it was a nickel you know turnip juice yeah i'm surprised you know back in my day the tuna man
came to your house and delivered tuna door to door along with the milk
and sulfur. All I want is for you to have a good time while grocery
shopping because grocery shopping sucks. And that is a way to have a good time while grocery shopping.
I didn't know there was actually a setter ice thing.
You did know that because I told you that. Yeah, but I wasn't listening. Or believing me.
Grandpa was talking. To be clear, I heard and didn't care.
Sorry. I heard. I retained the information.
did not care. I just want to know if you've ever worked on a show with a bunch of
haters. Because this is what it's like. Alright, so
submit your entry for ESPN Fan Fridays.
Rob's already got his in, so you'll be entered
in the draw to win that $50 gift card.
And, Steve, you mentioned
History Corner. Adam, you had
an update on Adam's History Corner.
Yeah, so here's the thing. Okay, so I want
History Corner to be fun.
Because history can be fascinating
and fun and interesting.
When we talk about Russia and Ukraine,
there's nothing fun about it. And there's
nothing fun going back hundreds of years uh we're talking about famines we're talking about
imperialism today and in yesteryear we're talking about the worst of the worst when it comes to
humanity so my thinking is i i i know sometimes we do tackle tough subjects i did a bunch of
research on this and i tried to um i tried a few different ways to frame it where it wouldn't feel
like you wouldn't feel just horrified right and i'll tell you it's a horrifying story it's horrific
it's horrific now it was horrific for 60 years leading up to this i mean i think the last 20
years have been the most peace that region has seen in 100 150 years i mean this goes all the
way back to the 1850s so i am going to for the first time take a pause i don't want to say take
a pass on the ukrainian russian situation um because i i just don't it's just so brutal it's
not just fresh it's ongoing yeah yeah and and and so i think um i mean i think i think you know that
there's a good guy and a bad guy in the story um there's one per one party is just trying to live
and the other party is just trying to dominate and uh tens of millions of people have died
because of this yeah tens of millions so you know what i think if we're going to do history corner
i prefer if we can to push it in the direction of this should be fun and i want to get you
interested in history um and when you get interested in history you will then go down
and find these pieces of information that aren't necessarily as wow holy shit i didn't know that
Like right now, I got kind of obsessed with world history from about the late 1400s, European
world history, that is, from about the late 1400s to about World War I, because I wanted
to know the causes of what led to World War I, because World War I, to me, is the biggest
pivot point in history.
That's like 400 years.
It is, but a lot of what happened in that time led up to World War I.
and World War I is the start of basically the world I think that we see today mostly,
especially when it comes to Middle Eastern politics and Asian politics. And it's just a
whole bunch of things. And so one of the things that I really wanted to research was colonialism.
You know, it's very much on the forefront. How much of what we're hearing from people is accurate
because there's a lot of people out there denying it completely or denying that it was even a bad
thing um and obviously you go know going in that it was a bad thing but what was bad about it how
bad was it those are the things you want to know so i'm reading a book right now uh called avengers
of the new world and it's about the haitian revolution and uh and it is uh and i'm about
halfway through i know the basic outline of the haitian revolution and if you know anything about
Haiti now, you know, there's no good end to this story. It's the only successful slave revolt in
history ever going back to Roman times, the only one. And it is a fascinating, awful story. It
would be one of those things that, you know, I could talk about on history corner, but again,
it becomes really, really heavy very quickly. And, you know, I think it's a, it's one of those
things where I think if you get into history, like the way I have, I definitely think that
you should check it out because it's a microcosm of, of, um, what the, the, the worst parts of
humanity all in one. I'm, you know, Dan Carlin always talks about on his podcast, how he's
fascinated with the extremes of the human experience. This is one of them. And so again,
it's not something that in history court, it's like, well, I can talk about this in five minutes,
wrap it up in a bow and we're done. Right. It's just not going to happen. So I, I I'm,
I'm using that as an example of I'm learning about that, but it wouldn't be like our mosquito
conversation do you know what i'm saying right yes does that make sense yes is that fair everybody
cool so how would you like uh people to fill up the press conference or adam's history corner uh
channel on our discord going forward you ask what you want to ask and then certain things i'm just
going to tell you i'm not gonna i'm not gonna go in here right i'm just not gonna there's certain
things i'm gonna do and there's now i what i will promise you this next week is the i will tell you
about the emu war uh everybody in our discord is asking about the emu war they want me to talk
about it uh early 1930s we will talk about it never heard of it yep exactly the animal yeah
oh we'll talk about that all right little animal crossing so i'm doing a little research on that
and that's what we'll do is that fair yeah okay uh final thing of the day we'll end the weekend
on a much uh hyped segment it is test steve's brain about useless leafs nonsense okay what do
we got all right this is from a cursed chungus on discord actually before we get into chungus
i believe it is a fat dog before we get into a cursed chungus's question
i almost forgot to bring this up tonight at 5 p.m eastern on our discord server
the mods are doing a modcast
yay that's tonight
at 5 make sure you're there
it'll be on like an audio channel thing
you just listen and you can ask the mods questions
about like being involved with the network
and all the things they do and all that fun stuff
and they're just gonna yap away have a little
fun just yap away so 5pm
eastern join our discord if you're not
already a member it'll be on there
go enjoy the modcast
maybe we'll get a special appearance
from Stove Dingle
all right now back to a cursed chungus okay here's a challenge for leaf's memory for steve's
leaf's memory we have to determine how much information you want i have the date and the
year i also have the team do you want me to start with the date in the year yes october 5th 2005
now do you also do you also want the team
no because i think i know it the answer okay can i can i ask a question
sure is it the first game of the season uh it was the first game of the season okay so the
leafs lose the first ever shootout to the ottawa senators three two i believe i thought it was six
five no i think it was three two eric lindross scored with like two minutes left to give the
leafs the lead daniel alfredson i think it was scored with one minute left to tie the game
and then dominic hasik beat i think it was ed bell because dominic hasik was a senator
there's a reason uh we're testing steve's memory and not adams it was three two it was the first
ever shootout well done all i had to do was give you the date yep i give you the year that was
incredible i don't know what else to say you nailed yeah there's nothing to add how about
a challenge next time they're discord oh you got everything that was awesome well done thank you i
usually uh i like uh the date um and then what helps me out is the game number the game of that
So that first game gave it away.
Easily.
His first ever shootout in NHL history.
Can I run you through Dominator's numbers just in Ottawa?
Sure.
He's so good.
He had Detroit, Detroit, Ottawa, and then was traded back to Detroit for some reason,
and I don't remember the story for that.
I don't remember that at all.
But he had a 209 goals against average and a 925 save percentage.
Wow.
Five shutouts.
Insane.
In 43 games, he was 28-10.
Now, what year is this?
2005-06.
do you know how much goal scoring increased in 2005 oh it was like eight they every game was
eight five it was great and he had a what he had a 209 and a 925 and he was like 56 oh my god
um yeah and the senators okay so here's what happened um he missed the regular season and
the postseason despite several rumors that he would return for the playoffs he said that if
he resigned he would play for a base salary of 500 000 with bonuses which was barely over league
yeah if if he were to be resigned because he wanted to stay i guess and the senator just said
now we're not going to resign they let him go back to detroit he was 40 at the time at 41 he signed
with the red wings for the second time one year 750 000 bucks this is a guy who went 28 and 10
signed for 750 000 bucks to go to detroit and he got 38 wins the next season well 38 wins for
$750,000. They had to turn the team
over to the man who would eventually
become the Senators' starting goalie
who would take them all the way to the Stanley Cup Final,
Ray Emery.
Okay, so they probably thought they had a guy.
Speaking of the Senators,
did you guys see the one line
in 32 Thoughts where
Elliott Friedman said Giroux
isn't going to explore the Sens this offseason?
Isn't? Is going to explore
the Sens. He's been linked to them for a while.
He's an Ottawa guy. Yeah, he's from there.
sure yeah so that's why the Sens are gonna be a suitor of Claude Giroux this offseason well well
and the Sens it makes sense because the Sens don't think they're bad so I get it and like I mean
some veteran leadership would be nice actually up front it it's not the the weird part is him
wanting it it makes a lot of sense though oh it does no there's a fit it's okay it's weird that
he would want it from the perspective
of where the Senators are. It's not weird
that a player would want to go home, and it's not weird
that the Sens would want him. They're buying.
They just got Travis Hammonick
because they're like, okay, here we go.
They think their rebuild's over, and they had
an unfortunate year. We'll see
if they're right. Wow. Sens are
my sneaky good team next year.
Really? Yeah, look at the rearview mirror,
Leafs. The Senators are coming up
right behind you. Jesse Trakos,
everybody. There he is.
I don't think they're that good yet, man.
Also, they have to do something about that
Matt Murray, do you?
Matt Murray? Senators?
No?
