the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake
let's go oh look i'm a baron i don't get any first round picks till 2028 i'm a big bad bear name
blades and we're we're we're boston boston boston we're gonna have to rebuild now we're
dunkin donuts dunk in this first overall pick in your face sorry we don't get a whole lot
on the boss i'm not apologizing for it why would i apologize for it i'm both of your both of you
Listen, Boston, you're not going to get the Leafs one until 2028.
And I don't even think they're going to get the Panthers one until 2028.
So they've only got their own first round picks for this draft and next draft.
And Pasternak's already 30, guys.
Lol, poor.
Lol, poor.
You know?
You know?
And then you gave Jeffrey Vielle to the Anaheim Ducks for a fourth round pick.
What were you thinking?
Okay.
Yeah.
So about that one.
I don't get that one.
What do you mean?
like uh i'm i'm sure there's math there sure like he probably wasn't getting in the lineup they
weren't like let's take this perfectly good roster player and trade him for nothing but um why well
to be fair i don't think he had a point since like 2022 but oh that's why uh but there's always
a why he does play like a bruin he does play like a bruin that's very odd he's he was a that's a guy
that should have been a bruin this is what i wanted to start the show with i i had to start
the show with this because when oh no bruins have it bad we all got an assist last yes he did yes
he did now we're not going to start there i think we got to start with hi jesse welcome back thank
you how you doing i'm okay you're okay yeah i had a i had a bit of a scare on thursday do you want
to do you want to talk i had a bad bout of food poisoning and that left me expelling everything
from my body and that the bad vibes that left me on the floor briefly because i fainted from
extreme dehydration in the morning uh my girlfriend heard a giant thud she thought it was the garbage
because it's garbage pickup day oh yeah in her neighborhood she thought it was the garbage truck
coming by it's like oh they got the recycling bin no it was me on the ground so i did faint
and i did not have a concussion i was cleared from concussion protocol that's good so i appreciate
you guys uh you delayed that show thursday in hopes that maybe i'd be ready for friday but
that it wasn't well you're never sick and so it's a thing right the show on uh friday so i was
thinking back i think the last time i missed a show was around 2017 wow yes i remember it was
nearly a decade do you remember i also had food poisoning back then yes that day because i threw
up in the rogers bathroom that's right on the it was the fifth floor how did we even get it
recorded is it eric prime that did it or who did no i think you i think you guys just did it we
just did it you used to just hit record on the audio oh so we didn't do any video that day i
guess because it wasn't that big of a deal back then yeah i don't think there was video that day
but i also do you remember i also missed the doug sifu podcast you didn't i wasn't i forget like i
maybe i was like had work or like i was working at kids i don't know what why i wasn't like
immediately available to get to the studio for the doug sifu podcast right you guys did it without
me and we did we had cj on yeah and then cj left and then doug sifu part owner of the florida
panzers came on yeah but so did you guys record that yeah i remember recording that into vox pro
that was a with the videos though because i had video for sure yeah because there's a video of
that of that interview right would that have been you then because i wouldn't know maybe you told
me how to do it and i did it but that was that was 2016 too wow in and around there is probably
the is is the last podcast so you're phil kessel iron man streaks over i know i was a little
disappointed i'm sorry i'm sorry that's i mean we were too we were like quitter
there was we were texting um the group chat was going on on friday and i'm in an uber on the way
to get my procedure done and there was a decision that had to be made and i was like adam i'm about
to be medically unconscious you're the last one standing you need to make a decision
so i fainted this year jesse fainted not yet yeah not yet still still standing you can get there no
no no no what's it gonna be let's talk about it what's it gonna be what's my ailment gonna be
yeah i don't i we're at the age what's it gonna be so i i apologize to anybody listening if i'm
a little low energy today i'm still trying to get back to 100 it's when you i lost so much
just everything out of me i feel like i lost a million pounds um i don't know what it was though
like i don't know what gave me the food poisoning could have been just any normal thing what brand
name it you get like lettuce and it has like e coli totally get sick so it could have been
anything i ate but yeah severe food poisoning better written for a couple days and it's fun
isn't it great fun oh it's terrible they gave me an iv in the hospital it was very well treated by
people at michael garen oh that's oh michael garen we got we love an old school hospital
like michael garen and then did they update it or because they were doing some renovations no no
there's the the renovations are still going oh are they okay half of the building is like a
construction site right the other half is just the old rundown hospital yeah which you know what
god bless that place you know it's it's it's one of those old toronto hospitals that was probably
built in like the 50s and they're like okay we're done here we never need to do anything again
and care if you can ward off the resident evils yeah exactly yeah and you know what's funny is
back then too like hospitals used to have carpet i don't know if you guys remember that hospitals
used to have all carpet and shit so yeah which is a stupid idea like i guess the idea was to
keep it quieter but you know with people like jesse walking through the door expelling everything it
kind of creates a bit of a hazard right this probably didn't even think about it yeah there's
floors we should put carpet here and this that's where carpet goes the other thing in the old
hospitals in in ontario is like they've got the narrowest little hallways and the new ones it's
like gigantic yeah it's like these tiny little hallways you know you're just like sneaking by
people to get to your room or whatever so jesse did you did you get a room or did you just get
the ivy brought to you in the emergency room like most people like we have to set up sit up straight
and suck it up i went to the what is it the raz center the raz center the rat where they make
fun of you yeah that's where they make money a little bit yeah they roast you they make fun of
illness uh kevin hart comes out that's right and then so yeah jesse's so tall i said jesse is so
tall and then joke yeah and then that's the thing but no i i like got my room there but then when i
got my iv i just waited i did the iv in like the area where everybody's kind of sitting so okay
somebody else could have the room because i didn't need the room you didn't need the room you went
through triage ah is that what that's what that's what they call it that's where they they redirect
you you've been triaged a good yeah okay this is where they're like wait are you dying now
no okay fine wait over here one thing i did while i was bedridden is i watched
worthering heights you know the you watch that you watch smut in the hospital updated
worthering heights with um margot robbie sorry yes the woman first margot robbie and i was thinking
ah how far back could i go because that takes place in the 1850s sure uh emily bronte who wrote
it she died in like 1859 ish um from a case of tuberculosis and like she got tuberculosis she
dies michael garen was not around to save her back in the 60s that's right yeah how far back
would i go where if i get food poisoning i'd be dead right now not far you know i was like this
isn't very long in the past i think i'd be dead i think you're about maybe 100 years and if you
were living rurally maybe 60 70 years it's not far it's not far the the car thing really changed
thing for people because if you got food poisoning on the farm and you were 20 miles away from the
hospital well good luck walking or getting there on on your horse right but the the the car kind
of changes that because then you can drive to the hospital but i do think like you gotta remember
like the pipes that they've installed them and they're doing construction next door in our
building some of the pipes they're pulling out of the ground in broadview here are 100 years old
made of asbestos yeah they probably are like high concentrated pure asbestos um i think you know
what jess it would not have been that long and i was thinking even when you're going to the washroom
so much washing your hands after yeah just so you're not then getting infected from your own
stuff again germ theory is what 100 years old that's that's like very recent yeah like washing
your hands regularly hey was there a stigma with that is washing your hands what are you a woman
there must have been yeah oh there definitely was i mean imagine too like making it to your 40s
like we're almost there steve and having all your teeth it was pretty regular in our parents and
grandparents generation for people to just be missing teeth just lose just not just not have
them and and not have anything not even have any dentures to to replace it's like i just don't
have these teeth anymore and whenever they went to the hospital with it they give them a hockey
net in canada that's right and they said well done kiss them on the forehead um so anyway i'm
sorry if that's a little morbid but what you think about when you're watching withering heights on
your deathbed yeah well so why withering heights it's just something to throw on it was horny
i need to see heathcliff is it is it good or bad or the way where i landed on why this was
going to be an enjoyable watch is because i read the book many moons ago in high school
40 years ago you read it in high school we're all ancient right yes we are 45 years old so i
i read it in the 19 uh so i read it when it came out really in the 1860s um and it's a it's a
classic of literature it is a high production movie you're gonna nail it yeah you're working
with a terrific source material good ip it's like doing a story on the great gatsby yeah it's like
doing anything on any great novel you're working with one of the best source materials you have
in modern literature you are going to create a good movie because it's just gonna be based on
that and that's what they did okay it's a good entertaining romance story all right because it
comes from a great romance story so i did enjoy it that's like people going i wonder if this harry
potter show is going to be good on hbo max i mean this show's gonna fucking rock what are you talking
about it's gonna be incredible it's gonna be amazing the first six seasons of game of thrones
yeah they're working from the novel and then when they didn't have the novels and then what happened
when the novels ran out that's right it was bad so i enjoyed it because i knew it was going to be
a good story so i if you want to go see a romance movie that entertains you go watch it yeah yeah
anyway uh so that's myself there you go jesse with your withering heights review out there as
expected at the steve nagle podcast you know you you would expect that now i want to talk a little
bit about uh you guys missed this didn't we did i want to talk a little bit about some of the games
this weekend because it was interesting there's like a running theme with the buffalo vegas sorry
buffalo montreal vegas anaheim and wild ab series which is the home team got stomped at home
and then came back in game four and well i guess in the wild wilds case they got stomped in in
colorado and then came back and had a big game it hasn't been even no no it's there's not like
oh man that was the board super close not super close you could argue carolina philly is the
closest series to the second round did go to overtime a couple of games yeah and it was a
sweep yeah now i'm saving them for last because i think that was in yeah man it was just a drubbing
idea at the long long like i think we already did it but yeah i know well did we i think we
must have yeah did we we did it on friday when it's 3-0 okay so we haven't finished it yet well
then they lost yeah sorry philly bye-bye um let's talk about montreal and buffalo yes uh because
this series has a whole bunch of twists and turns buffalo comes out tears it up in the first game
and that was what we talked about friday i was just like uh like yeah montreal is probably gonna
get their licks in this series but i can't picture them based on game one buffalo had them solved
now game two and three have passed wow what is the difference what has happened is uh what are
we doing here what's going on yeah um that's the goal now um said the habs six times right um
the seventh one wasn't counted what are we doing here um i watched game one and was convinced the
buffalo sabers were an unstoppable force of nature that played at a pace that tampa doesn't
and even if they have uh even if tampa has a few things that buffalo lacks buffalo is so strong
in this one year area which is a speed and intensity north south offense um they're so
strong in that area that montreal's just not going to be able to contend with it
games two and three i'm like is buffalo a good team i don't know what to make of the series
at all um other than buffalo's rattled they're rattled in a big way tage thompson
had that snippy quote after game two i don't believe it's any of your business how injured
i am he was asked if he was hurt and he goes i don't think that's any of your business he scores
in the first minute which is great because it's a tap in but you're still like i'm watching that
game go and go and go and i'm like he won't shoot it especially on the power play that tage bomb
not there he'll fake slap it he won't shoot it i'm not saying he won't shoot at all but he won't
do the thing that he's known for he won't take slap shots so how many slap shots is he taking
maybe like a hairline fracture you're talking about i don't know a wrist thing i don't know
he won't shoot it interesting go back and watch that's not great no it's not especially if the
Habs have figured that out on account of,
well, there's one thing you don't have to worry about
on the power play anymore.
And he has the puck on the power play a lot.
But they're using Darlene a lot.
I noticed they were using Josh Doan a lot more as well.
And even though he's allowed so many goals
over the last two games,
I'm not left with the notion that Alex Lyon's the problem.
so there's a lot to fix in Buffalo if they don't want to go down 3-1 in this series in short order
Jesse uh in between breaks to the bathroom have you watched any of the I haven't watched any of
this I haven't missed the game because all I've had time to do is sit down so what what are your
thoughts after three games in this series because Buffalo really did dominate game one and then
it's been Montreal all the way since yeah there was there was some hope there in the third period
though i thought right before the kirby dot goal buffalo was pressing and they had an opportunity
on a couple of good chances to make it a one goal game from the second doline scored to make it four
two yeah that was that was late in the uh in the second there right and then so i thought there
was some momentum gaining but it always felt like when momentum could have been going buffalo's way
one they took a dumb penalty offensive zone penalty you know or they would allow montreal
to score which they have been doing at will uh now that they've gotten their mojo back going and
you know like you you have a cold cole caulfield and suddenly he's able to get more chances and
more things just barely ring off the post and then eventually now they're going in that tap
in he missed i was like he's he'll never score yeah no there's never going to be another cole
Caulfield goal so when those when that starts happening and it's like okay they're winning
without him and now they also have him going it's scary and then you have Dobish who's like
this new x-factor and they keep playing up his personality in the broadcast continually
and showing him more and more as the series goes along and it looks like it's going to be a hard
task for Buffalo to to win this series but I wouldn't count them out because they were in this
game if they were able to just get a couple chances there early in that third before that
dockhole i was a little worried about dobish when he got piled on at one point i was like oh
allenstein yeah just a torpedo yeah tell me about benson you wanted to mention him
oh well okay so you know this is going to be a difficult episode for buffalo sabers fans
obviously but uh i wanted to pump their tires a little bit and someone who we've never criticized
on the show kevin adams uh for selecting zach benson i think it was 13th overall 2023
uh off the top of my head just from looking it up this morning i believe he's third in games played
in that draft class and sixth in scoring for an undersized little pest of a player that you
picked 13th overall like what an amazing pick and in a in a series where a lot of guys look rattled
um i mean he does too but i guess it's in a productive way like he's playing with a productive
anger and a productive hatred he so rarely costs his team he never takes a shift off i've really
really enjoyed watching this player and he loves playing in buffalo he told the whole crowd man
like he was like play the hits yeah i sure love home team yeah you know what i listen i watched
that zach benson interview and i would i honestly like i know some people say they say it off off
you know on like behind the scenes here whatever yeah like the city or whatever it would be so nice
to hear that in toronto and i know it's been forever since anyone said that in buffalo and
the fans deserve that they really do yeah it is awesome to play in buffalo the organization was
just shit for 15 years but no one ever complained about playing in buffalo when they were great
it's a great place to play hockey this is the loudest series absolutely the loud and absolutely
and that's contending with damn colorado minnesota which is also pretty deafening yeah but montreal
buffalo i mean watching um the anthems yesterday even though buffalo scored the first minute goal
you're like yeah habs by a thousand i think you think so yeah yeah just that the fan you you have
to take something from that yeah right you have to and i think it takes a special kind of player
on the roadside to be like isn't this great yeah and not be intimidated by it and for all the home
players you're just like yeah we're gonna absolutely put these guys through the boards
for all of you it's the best when did they get metal who the mascot i don't know
don't ask me that i don't know that was like who the hell is that mascot and i didn't see it
so i went oh that's up yeah i don't know what his story is but he's funny he was the expose
mascot yeah canadians then at the end of the game there's this light blue mascot with an orange
beard wearing the the baby blue powder blue habs jersey yeah and on the back of his on his name
plate it says metal i'm like who the hell's metal yeah i mean yeah yeah hell yeah hell yeah brother
but also where did you come from brother when did they ever when did they get that
thing i like that yeah good for you montreal i like that good for you but also that's metal
where did that
had announced his
retirement in October
of 2023
did he make his debut
unofficial Canadians mascot
metal announces retirement
so he's official beloved blue
mascot hangs up his skates and heads
to the bench nearly
one year after reappearing on the
scene unofficial Canadians mascot
metal announced his retirement from live
hockey games on Friday the furry blue
character shared the news via video
posted to his social accounts in which he can be seen settling into retired life on a beach down
south he's poochy i have to go now my home planet needs me the mascots original gig with the
canadians throughout the 80s and into the early 90s went on a hiatus after a night of bad choices
partying with the club following the 1993 win hell yeah hell yeah metal hell yeah uh those events saw
metal fall asleep in an ice machine in the
foreign basement and spend the next three decades
in suspended animation ah
so it's a bit he
reemerged blue from his cryogenic
sleep except for his iconic
orange mustache and mullet during
renovations in 2022
so there you go so he's the team's unofficial
mascot for the reverse retro game
perfect in 2223 that is
by the way metal is every
80s Montrealer I just want
to throw that out there if you're a Montrealer
from then you hit your peak in the 80s that
that's you are metal you're descended from metal he looks like the dad from the motorcycle show
where he screams at his son yeah what's that show called i think west coast choppers yeah
that's such a great meme his personality is he screams at his son and makes motorcycles
and gets in fights let's let's talk about a couple of things too on this game arbor jack
guy at the end i got the uh the clip here jesse if you want to just yeah so he's getting
so yeah people were asking me in the streams like what do you think i'm like well i didn't
see it because i was streaming the ducks game and it already started but you know uh watching
it afterwards yeah it is bad but then i go but it is the player safety department and i don't know
how they look at this yeah so that is the okay you're all looking at this a little too
a lot of people are looking at this without nuance in a vacuum what josh norris did
which was not all that far removed from what ridley grigg did logan stanley was tied up with
a habs player i forget which one and josh norris goes and tries to hadouken the guy right in the
face that's bad my description of it is bad arbor jack i just glove on punch someone in the face
and it was carrick right uh sam carrick yes that's bad so here's here's here's him winding up and
then hadouken oh my god guys now this happens in every game in a florida panthers series not
not like this no i mean yes but also no it happens in it happens in every florida panthers game in
spirit okay okay this is flush this it's a knockout punch he knocked him out he almost
he knocked him down this would have at least been a standing eight count yeah right yeah you can
and it's with two seconds to go in a game that you're winning by four so twenty five hundred
dollar fine i think this has to be uh one game sussy can you go for for just a little bit to
see where sam carrick ends up because i think people need to see uh the ice there it is
yeah so he goes down um and arbor's not a weak man no and like he's a pretty strong guy
some people are like what he's gonna get suspended for being strong yeah you can be kind of sure
like yeah yeah they don't always suspend the act they suspend the act plus who it's from
uh this is like a bottom three person in the league you want to get punched by
like we were trying to come up with the list on the stream yesterday olivier arbor jack i
matthew olivier uh nick delorier yeah nick delorier and and people kept going
and i kept going not even brady brady's pretty strong no brady if he's looking at you that's
a superpower right imagine if he looked at you when punching how great true true he doesn't
it's like an action figure with mobile arms but no neck right like um like mcdermott a few years
ago was one of the responses but it's not a few years ago rempy is tough but he loses a lot of
fights sabrin probably put into the same is sabrin he's just crazy is he a strong puncher or is he
just nuts that's he's out of his mind that's the thing like like you know there's a little bit
sabrin's got a little that that crazy where you're like i don't know what he's going to do yeah uh
whereas i can expect from a guy like say ryan hartman who's also crazy he's matured a little
bit so i know he's going to keep the crazy within a bit of a border here and there are probably some
players that we don't necessarily know about uh as much because they're frankly better hockey
players yeah right like olivier is really good yep he is um delorier is a fringe roster guy and
actually so is jack guy he's played more games than he hasn't but he hasn't played every game
right and i don't think he's going to be playing next game like he caught him so
flush uh last thing i want to talk about i think it's a fine by the way you think it's a fine i
think it is too i don't think there's a suspension there i don't think so my bet is one game for
jack guy and a fine for norris i i think norris needs to get something because that was pretty
chicken shit as well um i'll be very surprised if it's not a suspension but i think what ridley
grig did is like the peak of chicken shit in the playoffs and that only got two regular season
games so jack is doing so important there yeah so jack guy doing this isn't gonna warrant a
playoff game that's a five thousand dollar fine that's roughing yeah and and here's the thing
the player safety will be like well he was looking at him he saw it come yeah they're engaged in
battle you know that's what they're gonna do they also don't need to explain it if it's a fine yeah
no they won't say anything you know they'll just be like hey steve go fuck yourself yeah
they've set the precedent where it's like nothing gets punished that bad uh the the the habs fans
were a meme factory last night the guy dropping the double birds on uh that was hilarious in the
first period absolutely incredible uh the other thing i want to mention and this people like
really reacted negatively to this and i think it was just a mistake but the the nick suzuki ai
photos from the future okay so i missed that on the broadcast yeah i thought going around virally
and i was like okay is this real so it is real they are ai photos of him and his wife and their
baby they're very obviously three different men and none of them are next to that's right because
it's it's ai it's ai uh but i think it's one of those things i don't know how it could have
happened but i do feel like i'm like okay i don't think sports net was like let's set out to use ai
that seems like somebody making an error there it is behind this there's the picture and i think this
appeared online months ago when the baby happened uh and then um and then they used it in the piece
but like it doesn't i don't those are three different women those are three different men
it's a family photos what are we doing i guess my thought is just like you know uh people make
mistakes and of course that does have a history of using ai and their stuff do you remember when
they did the baby memes oh i hated the panel as the ai so lame you remember that when it was a
big thing those ai babies and yeah that with the full panel even that is not trying to be like this
is literally kyle bukaskas right now you know what i mean like they're doing a bit yeah oh look at
him he's like a baby but it's it's funny in that it's it's the same kind of funny that you're that
you're really old ant on facebook likes minion memes right like it's that kind of humor where
i can see why they ran with it because maybe that's the audience but like it it's just it's
such an ignorable piece this one people are like i'm so disgusted and i'm like i don't know that
warrants that kind of reaction like it is probably a mistake it's hilarious and it's sloppy but it's
kind of funny like i don't know here's here's what i'll what i'll say because you you do see
some broadcast experts go do you know how many people needed to vet this before it got to air
and i'm here to tell you not many and actually alarmingly small amount of people yeah because
there's not a lot of jobs left in media there was one point multiple people that would look at
something but imagine having to do the same job as 20 years ago with a tenth of the people that's
what's happening also consider you know mistakes fucking happen man come on hockey night in canada
is not exactly an entry-level position and this is probably like someone who's been there before
and doesn't exactly get their work checked yeah if you had to check every single piece
like if it had to be vetted by someone like your expertise is supposed to be the vetting yeah you
were vetted when we hired you well you know the way i look at this is far be it for me to criticize
a mistake like this when i make tons of mistakes oh i can't i simply can't so do i but like i guess
at minimum it's like can you yeah maybe you should know what nick suzuki looks like yeah
i don't know guys on the left is a little suzuki ish it's a little he the hairline the hairline
could be his brother brother who's the guy in the bottom right that i don't know i don't know
that i'm not sure probably that probably was on the bachelor's that second cousin territory that's
not brother anymore that second cousin it's a nice sweater though nice knit sweater you know
it is all day also why is it here's the photos here's her pregnant and then here's the baby
like do people do that i don't know i don't know i'm gonna criticize the ai collage and
how they've organized oh i'm gonna say it's a faux pas he's wearing the same outfit top right
while she's pregnant and then on the on the left when she's had the baby he's wearing the same
outfit get a stylist nick no that's uh that's gross and weird and i hate it and please don't
do it again yuck you no thanks those are my thoughts anyway we'll move on from that let's
get to the vet mgm big story sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to
them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's
deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor

on that it's like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hang on a
second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper thing
and the and the washer thing chemicals you gotta have the right chemicals see what i'm saying
And that's why I used TaskRabbit and I employed a tasker.

All right, let's go to the Wild and Avalanche, which is the other, I think, series that most people have their eyeballs on in the second round here.
The flippers and goggles on.
Yeah, it's been a wild one.
And I think the abs taking two at home was a massive win for them.
Of course.
And it got back to after game one, you said, I don't I know that Montreal is going to get back in this series, but I don't know how.
Right.
That's how it felt with Minnesota, too.
I'm like, I know they can, but how?
And it turns out really good puck movement and Quinn Hughes.
Right.
Oh, man, that when he scored, I think it was the second goal.
I was like, yeah, they're winning the game.
They're winning the game.
They figured something out.
it's it's funny how much offense comes into play on defense right yes because through the first
two games you're like okay well Minnesota's not going to win a game because they can't keep the
puck out of their net well you get the lead early it's a lot easier to plan and park the bus a
little bit then you take advantage of your opportunities on the power play and they just
pick Colorado apart methodically like yeah it's funny Kevin Bieksa was talking about them like
you know the the beast bleeds sort of thing he was using Ivan Drago and yes and I'm like
it's the NHL like Colorado won the president's trophy but we watched them lose like what 30
times you know like it's the it's the NHL teams lose um Minnesota knows I don't think they look
at Colorado like that at all um they might have after game one but even even through the first
two games they were scoring goals that was not the problem the problem was keeping the puck out of
their net and they finally friggin did it right by going back to walston well and i think there
was an over like i understand why you take walsted out of the net after game one but i still wouldn't
have done it and and it was because i didn't think his i know he let i know he let nine goals in
but and i so that is a big caveat big asterix nine goals and i know you've got probably the
best one-two pairing in the league with gustafson in it's pretty damn good right top five but
i felt like it was a mistake to pull him and i felt like not only did his um did his his you
know it seemed like a game that was just out of like lucas dostal allowed a ton of goals in game
three the ducks went right back to him right and i think that's what should have happened with
Wallstead I think based on his numbers in the first round you have it's your first game against
a new team and the team is dynamite the abs are unbelievable okay so they beat you nine times
let's let the rookie get back in there he's not rattled he's cool as a cucumber but they put
Gustafson in and I actually think that move cost them game two because Gustafson let a couple
softies in and once you do that with Colorado they're gonna they're gonna strangle you and
this is this is the thing like so Wedgwood gets pulled from game three he's starting game four
right like did do we have any doubt that he's starting game four yeah no he'll start yeah yeah
yeah he'll start but you pull him all right your night's done you get a little bit of rest there's
something different about starting a guy right well he's also had time to prepare and you know
it's a major it's a it's a mental thing yeah but like i'm like in edmonton for example when they
did the whole back and forth it's because they weren't sure and they shouldn't have been sure
neither of them were very good this is different they're both incredible um and it's weird you can
all you can you can apparently mismanage a situation that seems impossible to mismanage but
why are we crying over spilt milk they they won game four is coming and they did it without their
two best defensive players no eric sinek no brodine and i don't know if brodine's gonna
play in this series at all they keep hinting that eric sinek might be close but he keeps not
playing and then it's like okay well that means mccarran's your third line center and 21 22 year
old you're off as your second line center okay is that is that you think playoff gamesmanship
and he's not close i don't i how okay possible if you're if you're jared bednar jesse and steve
do you give a shit no like i i know eric is a really good player but how much does it really
change your game plan whether he's in or he's out whether he's in or he's out your center depth
is better than theirs beginning middle end you probably have three centers that could be their
number one center before like it like how how many centers too on the colorado avalanche are
better than ryan hartman and i'm talking about at least nate mckinnon brock brock and then you've
got cadre wa and jack drury and was playing the wing yeah and i'm not saying that hartman hasn't
had a good series he has but we're talking about like here what's the rating in nhl 26 going to be
you know what i mean cadre's hard to get a read on because he's old and his thumb hurts yeah or
hand hurts which is actually a recipe for colorado winning the cup yeah true um that's how they win
is you have to have cadre but you also have to bust his digit there um no i i think it's two
it's just two minnesota's got a bunch of like very capable guys up the middle and just killers
throughout their lineup it's an interesting strategy oh mccarran when you when mccarran
actually gets the puck in the offensive zone along the boards good luck he's a refrigerator
yeah like i watched sam malinsky try to throw a hit and separate him from the puck just a not a
not a hard hit just a little bit of a bump to no old school refrigerator on skates yeah no ads no
screens no just just a fridge there baby down the ice i'm white just keep white handles and yeah
yeah keep shit cold that's what he does that's his job jesse i look at the way the wilder built
and it reminds me a lot of how team usa was built funnily enough they had the same general manager
mobile defense quinn hughes brock faber spurgeon is mobile when brodine's playing he's mobile
um i i wonder how much of an effect that has on the speediness and the the overall skillfulness
of the colorado avalanche can you neutralize that because quinn and brock specifically can skate so
well yeah i think the whole minnesota wild centermen and their lack of star power down there
is so overrated because you watch these games and they have just a great ability to score from
everybody else in their line yeah their winners are crazy and then their centers pitch in every
now and again with the goals that they need and it's so immaterial to the final execution of a
good hockey team this is a team that put up six goals on the abs in game one and drew still sits
there and looks at the line he was like we're gonna dummy these guys ryan hartman's their one
c how could how could we even lose a single game i'm like have you watched them play they that's
really how they do it imagine believing in your team oh man it could be me hey how about this
that's so crazy jesse to back that up second and playoff scoring caril caprizoff third that was
nasty quinn hughes tied for sixth matt boldy that's three guys who are essentially in the top
10 that's capri uh hughes with 13 um uh kaprizov with 14 and boldy with 11 so they're getting it
from else what they did against dallas and then now their ability to score in this series against
the abs in game one and then winning game number three should be enough evidence that
they have a well-constructed team and that even though you don't have stars down the middle
there are a lot of stars on the wing and then the two best pairing offensive defensemen in the league
no there's stars in cancun thanks to them hey
joel erickson canes joel erickson act by the way will not play tonight okay he's out he would miss
morning skate and they ruled them out same with uh jonas brodine so they're not gonna have them
but they don't need them they gotta play they uh next man up even the guys who are like you don't
know how many years left they have in the nhl like matt zuccarello is still a very good player
vladimir teresenko is so good at picking his spots still you know what i mean yeah he's got
that knack right there's something about it he doesn't have to have a good game to get you
like he just needs a couple good moments and it's behind you and you're screwed
he pulled the Forsberg on the avalanche in Colorado which is actually insane except they
lost the game yeah it would have been talked about a lot more and that line has actually been
quite effective because that's not you know he's not high up their lineup like he's not playing
he's accepted his role as sort of depth scoring he got sick of Detroit right that's why they moved
him for future considerations uh wasn't he a sen for a hot minute too tarasenko yeah but he came
from detroit and then he was right because and they the eisenman just punted him yeah cap space
because i think he was over it i think probably is the rumor probably it worked out and here's
the thing the funny part for him it sure did imagine talking about vlad tarasenko in the year
2026 in the playoffs and his line mates are mccarran and trennan like trennan who led the
league and hits in the regular season and michael mccarron who actually was really good with keith
keifer sherwood in nashville on the fourth line a couple years ago in the playoffs unbelievable
those two but like that is not when you look at that on paper like really is that the recipe for
it is it is it's doing it's well it's good well i feel like we've had this conversation with
mccarron already and it took him a very long time to turn into this player consistently but
a great example of a first round pick who did not achieve his ceiling yep like you don't draft
fourth liners in the first round on purpose yep but has put together an incredible nhl career
instead of that one guy i remember i want to say it was tyler dello who's now assistant
gm of the hurricanes but way back in the day when he was a blogger he talked about uh guys like
trevor lewis who are like that that was a guy who was supposed to be first round pick which you hope
is probably if you're drafting a forward a top six player uh he just put together an extremely
consistent uh depth career right in the nhl hundreds and hundreds of games maybe even a
thousand i don't know if mccarran's gonna get to a thousand but he's obviously helping minnesota
to win games right now absolutely uh i i have to say too so they put in jeff petrie for game two
this is minnesota and then they moved him out and then put zach bogosian back in who's 35
still looks strong add that to marcus nick marcus and nick felino and uh stern who are all in their
30s but um obviously nick felino is older than marcus marcus has been a factor man he's a great
player man you know how old Nick Foligno is 38 I always like to bring that up well I didn't mean
it literally oh okay here's how old he is here's how old he is do you remember Dion Phaneuf this
is a Leafs Sens game Phaneuf still with the Leafs and Foligno still with the Sens he lights up
Stefan Da Costa wow one of the craziest hits of his career it absolutely bombs Stefan Da Costa
the first player to jump enough is nick felino wow that clip is from like 2010 and he was well
into his career at that 11 yeah he was established he's as old as you and i are he's a 06 man that's
crazy yeah it's quite the career so crazy that he's still doing it on the colorado side jesse
are you worried if you're bednar are you just jealous no this is going to be a competitive
series it's gonna be close this is what you should expect you're not you're not worried
you're not overly confident it's going to come down to a six or seven game series no avs fan
is going to want to hear this but the fact they were up to nothing after two i was a little
disappointed and i needed to be tighter than that right you know what i mean minnesota wins game
three i'm like it's as it should be it needs to be this way right it needs to be this way listen
if we don't get at least six out of this it's garbage yeah come on it is this is supposed to
be the box office one right we talked this series up for months it was going to be colorado against
whoever comes out of dallas and minnesota it's finally here come on give us six uh this is the
first colorado loss of the playoffs um the carolina hurricanes are the only undefeated team in the
playoffs we'll get to them next don't you worry um but i think uh i think it really says something
that that about where colorado is because yes it was a dominant win by the minnesota wild it
is hard to win that many games in a row and especially in the playoffs but the colorado
avalanche are phenomenal they are phenomenally built and maybe in a couple of years they'll be
old but that's not right now nope and they have this great ability to switch guys out they go and
they make trades they're bold and so i don't feel like they're gonna get that old well who's who's
starting in this one is it uh used to sananin or uh alexander georgia or pavel francis or pavel
francis yeah they completely changed their future in net and their present who's the guy that went
to seattle too and has been bad grubauer grubauer was like it was nominated for the vesna yeah he
was nominated for the vesna trophy and they're like nah you stink yeah bo byram casey middlestead
all the guys that have come in in between the 2022 run and now too right like guys that they've
tried hasn't worked they've finagled a lot and they've extended their window and it makes it so
that uh when you get the band back together the cadre trade i don't look at you sideways because
i'm like ah you did a lot of others yeah that wasn't sod for panarin right that was a that was
a different uh you can have dessert with your dinner jesse what do you got one thing the wild
should be very cautious of and it looked better in game three they went two for three but their
penalty kill has been a disaster and actually one of the worst of all time michael russo had this
stat which i just want to read to you guys the wild entered the game with a 59.1 kill in the
playoffs the worst by a team that advanced past the first round since the league began charting
the stat in 1978 hell yeah yeah that's actually not surprising 59 is insanely bad yeah they were
But that's all Dallas did in that first round is they only scored power.
Dallas got like no five on five goals that entire series.
And it was all on the power play.
And this series, like they looked better in game three.
They're still only two for three.
But if they don't get their penalty kill really fixed in these next couple of games, like they'll be out.
Weirdly, the only thing Colorado didn't do well this regular season was the power play.
Yes, this is the league's worst power play that they're up against.
so which is an interesting little matchup did it actually end the league's worst or was it like
30 or 30 I think it was bottom five oh certainly it was bottom five it was basically all year which
is why you know I kind of thinking about that so I I'm going to jump to the duck series for just a
quick second sure Joe Quinville is running two very capable and effective power play units but
he's going up against the PK of Vegas which is really good so he doesn't just leave one unit
out for the lion's share of the time and the Leafs and Colorado have had the same guys mostly in the
same positions for a long time i wonder if you just montreal is just one unit i know but i'm
and and they are right now like the harlem globetrotters when they're out there but so
were the leafs back in the people forget the least power play was always top five in the league and
then it wasn't because it became predictable and i think maybe the cheat code isn't just running
one unit jesse go ahead sorry what was it 27th is the answer that's still pretty bad yeah hey
out of the bottom five let's go they moved all the way up to 27 they were 0.1 out of the bottom
five it's worth mentioning the flyers are the worst in the bottom five or i'll read the bottom
uh six for anybody listening it goes flyers flames islanders blackhawks kings abs 17.1
the abs are kind of a weird amount of playoff teams what the hell kings suck uh islanders
didn't make the playoffs flames didn't make it didn't make it flyers uh offense was never their
thing yeah yeah they didn't offense their way to the second round team though second round team
true very true second round defense uh okay anything else in the wild abs because i want
to get to carolina philadelphia i said go at least six i meant go seven yeah you gotta go seven i
actually need i need montreal buffalo to go seven i need this one to go seven f you but also yeah
totally what do you mean f you no i'm kidding no i hey say what you will about streaming habs games
they haven't been boring for a second no they've been amazing holy cow i mean you got it going in
the first minute sometimes playoff games are funny right like last night i i was uh i was a little
tired before the game so i took a quick nap i come in and it took about five minutes for the game to
well and truly get going and then it got going right uh it's it that montreal buffalo thing is
instant right off the top oh it's compelling before puck drop it's crazy crazy um let's
talk carolina philadelphia carolina did not lose a game in this series but they did yield a couple
of leads uh so it was the first time in the play philadelphia's claim to fame this playoff run is
a second round b they actually had several leads on the carolina hurricane well adam all great
empires crumble and fall the hurricane is that truly the end for the flyers no the hurricanes
are done damn it's over freddie anderson has been the story of the playoffs along with logan
stankovan can we talk about the con smith race between freddie anderson and mitch marner yeah
mitch marner leading the playoffs and scoring freddie anderson in goaltending stats can i just
have a moment's peace no hell no you cannot can i just chill you cannot can i can i have a moment
to myself where i'm happy the whole time marner i think they i think he had he had the four or
point game on friday and then last night he had another three oh that's good yeah he was great
he was phenomenal oh that's great oh i'm so happy for him that's great man um it was announced
today mark jankowski who's been a big part of this canes run has signed a two-year extension
1.85 million aav that's pretty sweet i did not know that um so when this goes to overtime in
game four and i had to go back and watch it because i was streaming when it went to overtime
uh the carolina hurricanes just said okay you're not going to get another shot in this series
yep and the flyers went oh want to bet we'll try hurricane said i bet you well they simply can't
like you just so this is the thing so the cane said after this series and i wanted to know what
you guys thought from watching them like last year this was a good team that got run over by
the panthers so did everybody else right and you know the one achilles heel of the carolina
hurricanes in the playoffs in the last few years has been if they run into a team that drags them
into the muck they can't handle it okay that is that's the truth that team's not always there
and i don't think it is this year it's not like it's not tough teams like montreal buffalo are
tough teams but i don't think they're drag you into the muck the way the panthers would
montreal is a really interesting both teams in this series actually um montreal and buffalo i
think stylistically are really interesting matchups for carolina oh i don't know if either
gets it done carolina is a bowing constrictor man they'll just they will just slowly strangle you
because they don't they don't completely dominate you right it's just well they kind of let you
think you're in it and then you look at the score sheet after the game you're like how the hell did
that happen huh we got a shot 42 to 15 i felt like we played lost three two
curious anyway let's see what game two has in store hmm the exact same thing yeah now jesse
there have been those who have said and i'm one of them and you have to state this as a fact i
I believe Carolina's path has been easier than any other team thus far.
Okay.
You got the same.
You got the Canadians who not the Canadians,
the senators who really underperformed and Linus Olmark was unbelievable.
And Brady seemed injured.
That series did not go the way anyone thought.
Nobody thought that went that way.
Philadelphia.
We could kind of see Philadelphia was like,
well,
you know,
Philadelphia is a young team and they're going up against the team that's
done this for years.
Well,
someone saw it coming.
Oh,
Steve Dangle.
Steve Dangle saw it coming.
So Jesse,
carolina hurricanes if they get into the finals are they the favorite i would think so even up
against like i'm trying to think the abs or the golden knights or the wild like i think right now
carolina is the best team in the playoffs i don't think there's much argument to be made and i know
people want to denigrate the sens but coming into i picked the sense to win that series for a reason
the last half of that the back half of the season the regular season the Sens were a really good
hockey team and Linus Allmark played his ass off and I think the main thing going with the
Hurricanes is that they have a line that's better than any line in hockey that's Stankov and Blake
and Hall and crazy so many years I know you you guys are trying to twist the narrative and saying
oh the Canes aren't tough and all that but the main narrative around the Canes is that they have
no stars and every year it's a different excuse for the hurricanes it's all they don't have stars
oh they're not tough oh they don't have goaltending and all of those things are solved because their
stars are a second line that's better than anybody's any line in hockey nobody's better
than those three individuals so if you're getting star power out of those three guys as a collective
that's solved as you get the most elite goaltending in the playoffs out of freddie anderson that's
solved and then the toughness like they were they were mucking around ottawa that whole series oh
they wrecked them they ran their show i'm not worried about any part of the hurricanes and
brindamore has them playing a great system and he has them playing with a great mentality and
if ton dundon wants to spend like a couple dollars on gatorades after the game for the team
no maybe that they'll be able to recover for each game after their week off uh maybe they can win
the stanley cup but who knows if don don didn't we'll spend that no he won't we'll see i love what
the dallas stars do uh jim noel got his uh gm of the year award jeff merrick once said the real gm
of the year award is the stanley cup and he's right and eric tulsky is undisputedly a top five
gm in the league if they pull the well because he was the guy that did all the stuff under waddell
too like let's like don waddell's biggest strength is hiring people that are smarter than him that's
a great manager that's why he's in columbus now because he's got to turn that franchise around
uh eric was the guy doing it and now eric is just the guy with the name attached to it but he's he's
an interesting gm in that uh we tend to think of the best gms as the guys who get the best
names right oh i know that guy i don't know that guy oh man he's like oh he's made this avengers
team the hurricanes have assembled this group of dudes like none of us really appreciate
and they haven't lost a game through two rounds which hasn't been done for quite a while and to
me that's harder to do how difficult is it to be like well i know that guy's good yeah i know that
guy's good i know everyone knows that guy's good everyone knows that guy's good i think it's harder
to be like yep most dominant line in these playoffs taylor hall jackson blake logan stankoven
what oh um also our starting goalie who's the best goalie in these playoffs is the guy you
all thought should be the backup including me dude like it's hard it's hard to do what the
hurricanes have done i'm so impressed so the one thing i want to say about the canes that i really
respect is you remember a couple years ago they lose pesci shea and who else was it that summer
they lost like three key guys uh they acquired walker yeah they got walker back that summer
and there was like a there was a third guy and it was a forward and i can't remember who it
might have been but it doesn't it doesn't really matter losing pesci and shea was enough right
and you know when they did we came back and said okay you got sean walker who was a flyer and then
signed over there but what are you gonna do right that's a lot of talent walking out the door they
didn't want to overpay for those guys and what i love about the hurricanes is that they let those
three guys walk to free agency and they're perfectly fine and and have been to the conference
finals already since and are back they've been to the conference finals now three times in four
years like this is a this is an unbelievably well-run team can i shout out uh another player
sure they have a player on the roster who the leafs played against a lot in the canada bubble
season and this player was drowning just underwater probably in the nhl a little young
and i was just like it's mean that they're still playing this guy and this the leafs were running
teams over that year jalen chatfield oh okay because he was with the canucks i man i can't
even remember that i remember it because i was like they should stop playing jail and jadfield
because it's mean and the player he's turned into with carolina i'm so surprised i'm so stunned good
for him and there's another guy who i was gonna be like oh yeah they've drafted oh they didn't
draft him i don't remember how they got him but he's turned into a great player for them and
keandre miller is a guy that they shook loose jesse i mean the rangers the rangers just firing
guys out the door needs to be studied because all the guys they were like fuck you get out of here
are all still playing yeah and the prider truba k andre miller who else like it's it's kind of
crazy yeah every every x rangers is going on to have a great time yeah yeah but oh go ahead well
sorry uh jalen chadfield got into 18 games for the canucks in the 2020 2021 canada bubble season
18 games he had one assist minus 11 in those 18 games wow he just got run over but he figured it
out he figured it out and by the way how did they get him just signed him sign him they signed him
that summer they watched him play those awful 18 games and said yoink they signed him that summer
and he's been a hurricane ever since yeah and and since that summer he's just grown and grown into
bigger roles like since that summer he's been a consistent carolina hurricane uh well since the
22 23 season playing like 75 plus games or whatever every year but his minutes have slowly
been going up and now he's just the most steady right hand next to slavin you know and that's
just his role and he's excellent at it even with the canucks farm team he played uh quick math
like 150 ahl games two goals and the hurricanes are just like this guy's awesome they locked him
up and now he's over 300 games into his nhl career but they're they're decor like it's such a great
mishmash of just collecting talent like you have slavin who's the best stick in the league best
defensive defenseman and then you have a guy like chatfield and then you have a cast off like goss
despair yep who's just like oh let's go get this reclamation project to be our fifth defense he's
been reclaimed like three times this guy yeah yeah and now he's he's really excelling every time he
touches the puck you're like oh i see the skill that was there in like the philadelphia years but
he doesn't ever play those crazy minutes that was forever ago there's no like big burden on his back
and he went through arizona and detroit looked good in detroit for a minute looked good for
arizona in a minute but didn't it never fully came together for him like his his rookie year
was awesome did he make the all-star team and stuff like he was well that i don't like he was
like really good at the beginning and then i want to say there was like the emoji campaign like
people just put the ghost emoji and the bear emoji yeah vote goes it reminds me of oel going
through that whole thing of his career and then just kind of landing on a really good competent
florida team that can just place him into the lineup and he wins the stanley cup like he's a
fifth he's on the third pairing of their defense and he just saw it i'll give you something i
forgot uh this is his second run with the hurricanes the cost of spare is yeah in march
2023 traded from the coyotes to carolina for a third round pick in 2026 that the pick has not
been used yet oh wow this is 2026 and then he signed with detroit and then he signed with carolina
yeah and then they completely forgot he andre miller who you brought up that's taking advantage
of a new york team that wants to sell everything and even though he's still a really good defenseman
and usable and they don't want to pay him you can pay him the money because you're carolina
your cap situation so good i don't and it's not that much is he making that much no it's it's 7.5
million they don't want to give him that over eight years traded from the new york rangers
to carolina for scott morrow a first round pick in 26 and a second round pick in 26 and scott
morrow is probably so sad about that he's probably because he played a pretty good like depth role
for carolina last year um well now he's too bad and and and well and this now that they're in the
conference final if i'm not mistaken this pick is guaranteed to be either 32nd 31st 30th or 29th
yeah and then sean walker is an ex-king who's bounced around to the flyers and the abs and
then lands in carolina and is playing with with miller and they're solid i'm pretty sure sean
walker was somebody that the flyers tried to sell at the deadline but then the price was too high
and then he just walked in free agency i'm pretty sure is that not what happened they just didn't
do anything with march march 2024 traded from the philadelphia flyers with a fifth round pick in
2026 to colorado he played for colorado for ryan johansson and a conditional uh first round pick
in 2025 and that first round pick is bill zonin who's a penguins draft pick so there must have
been a trade there huh yeah and it wouldn't have been this year's penguins abs trade with kulak
because that's bill zonin's already been drafted and he was drafted by the pence and then it just
says signed by carolina interesting wow these guys they're vultures yeah well he's a genius

okay so on the vulture part i think pat you gotta put that pat for beacon that too
interesting what is pat verbeek so switching to that series what is pat verbeek missed on
he he goes and he gets truba for nothing okay he goes and he gets crider the next year for nothing
he gets grandlin for free three years seven seven million per after he convinces grandlin to leave
the stars i'm sure the stars were capped out but hey i i don't understand that for the ducks i'm
not gonna lie yeah you're a good playoff performer we want you to come here and we haven't made it
since 2018 I was one of the wrong people on that I think and and then you've got I mean how many
other guys on this roster that have just kind of come out of nowhere and become you know revived
their careers like Kreider you can see Kreider's not a hundred percent he's not the Chris Kreider
that we used to see in the playoffs he's still playing on the first line he's still creating
opportunities he's still getting points um and you know he's allowing Troy Terry and Leo Carlson to
have a ton of space right and then you get to let me just pull up the roster here because i'm kind
of tired and it's hard to people don't realize what a skill that is though what what creating
space creating space and just being a role guy after a career chris crider scored 50 goals yeah
like in relatively recent memory it's a skill to be able to go from that to bang and crash
Alex Killorn, cap, casualty of the Tampa Bay Light, right?
36 years old, willed a goal into the net last night.
We mentioned VL getting a fourth-round pick for him.
Trouba, John Carlson was a great trade.
And then they've got all this depth.
And also, let's not forget, Radko Gudis went all the way to the finals
with the Panthers and then just signed in Anaheim.
And we kind of made fun of it at the time because it was like,
well, you didn't sign there because they're good, right?
no he signed there because it was quiet and they overpaid him yeah um it worked out for him it
worked out i was gonna say the trevor's egress deal because he had a really good season with
the flyers obviously he went from 32 points to bloody 67 which is what he was at the beginning
of his career it's actually crazy how similar his numbers this past season were to his early
career numbers uh with the ducks but out of that deal you get a second a fourth and ryan paling
who's been so useful for you so even your even your quote-unquote misses you acquire pieces
that help you yeah paling's been great for them paling's been really good so and and here's the
thing too people forget that the ducks not only have they've not they don't it's not just lucas
and billy husso but they also have italian netminder damian clara the star of the olympics
that's right we love damian clara now last night's game was interesting because again
i don't think the ducks took were taken seriously after the oiler series i think it was not hey the
ducks achieved something it was the oilers fucked up yep that was the narrative yep but when you
watch it they were kind of dominating them the whole time and people like well the oilers are
just having a bad year they played later blah blah they don't stand a chance against the knights
the ducks have three out of four games in this series even though they've only won the two
dominated five on five play dominated it and one of the reasons that they kind of have struggled
is that the Vegas penalty kill
was up around 97% in the playoffs.
I think they went into the last game 25 of 26
on the penalty kill.
And they did score, the Ducks did score
on the first power play last night.
Who's missing?
Mark Stone.
Right.
And you still have, you still have Colasar,
you still have Marner,
you still have great players back there.
Like this is not,
Vegas is not good just because of Mark Stone.
mark stone and mitch marner is sort of a cheat code like that is unfair not fair on a pk they're
both olympians yeah um but if you're putting brandon sod in for mark stone there is a drop
off and having stone and carlson in the lineup for the one game they had it that's the game they
dominated william carlson's awesome right so i'm curious about you know because because really
mark stone's injury looked like a pulled groin and he was just skating and he went you could
see him smash his stick those non-contacts yeah i don't know what you do about that man that's just
being old right like that's just a lot of hard miles hard miles yeah because is he even that old
i don't know but it's hard it's it's nhl old yeah it's body old yeah body old so yeah the vegas
golden knights obviously like if they had won last night this is a this is a different conversation
but you at least have to give the ducks a ton of credit game six they are going at least back home
to the honda center one more time i know the ducks have looked good but uh i was watching the score
oh ducks go up up vegas oh ducks up vegas they had the lead and they didn't have the lead but i
was looking at that like if you lose without mark stone don't show up for game five just don't don't
bother so they pulled off what they needed to pull off they did it um boy taking game five in
vegas would really tie the room together but i'm still the as as the series progresses i'm still
like yeah vegas and six i'm feeling pretty decent about it i think and it's got nothing to do really
it's got nothing to do with the ducks like just vegas is that good what mark stone would
completely change my opinion i watch that and i say the ducks are right there they are they
this is to me a coin toss like i wouldn't feel confident about either pick oh like i don't feel
great about it i don't know it sounds like you're pretty high you just said you're pretty good
you just said it i think those are the words you're like well wait a second maybe i was too
confident on that no no i feel as good as you can about it no here's how i feel about it
yeah when people go hey man how you doing you're like living the dream uh-huh that's that's that's
it okay you know what i mean you're not living the dream no no your back hurts maybe you maybe
you are you got i am digesting you got a bit of a headache you are too right i'm living the dream
the dream no you're miserable oh i know no i'm kidding how dare you gaslight me i know
you're right it's toxic that's what i'm doing did you predict what was your initial prediction
for the series vegas in six it was i'm trying to show everyone how very abnormally large my brain
is i could have sworn you said the ducks but no no jesse and i said the ducks okay yeah no do we
say six or seven i don't remember okay i don't remember either pull up spark check but um i think
i think anaheim's right there they like the first couple games you know there's a couple
things you need to fix obviously the power play situation is a huge help you know seneca getting
a goal get one early like so much momentum there and like i think defensively they need to clamp
down a little better because it does seem like every time they get one vegas is right there
fighting back um there is a vegas knows how to muck up and score when they need to like get in
the dirty airs get some rebounds get something towards the net and score a goal like vegas is
really good at that but if anaheim just a little better defensively they can they can win two more
games in this series they can they can this is the problem like we keep gassing up lucas dostal
and they cannot keep the puck out of their neck oh he was he would but that's the thing is he's
made great now he was bad in game three yeah they pulled him for a reason he was not good uh found
his post again in game four uh are you gonna convert yourself to lucas dostal look at no
because that's how the as the espn broadcast that they had is that what they're doing they're doing
lucas i don't know the espn broadcast is so hollow to me that i barely notice it's there
um that is that is hey man if you want the energy sucked out of your life just tune into espn man
it's crazy not one of the best we have it is not tnt are just like our i i didn't really know
right like i sometimes will if i stay up and i watch a west west coast game uh in during the
week or whatever i'll usually just shut the volume off and watch uh and then i'll be on my phone and
look up whatever um actively watching and hearing it i'm like i get what the american fans are
talking about all of our american fans are like tnt over espn 10 out of 10 times and i'm like i
get it i get it and there's a staleness to it it goes from like the the game action to the
intermission panels and everything they do before and after the game the tnt broadcast is so much
better crazy it's so much better um it's been shocking walking well because the playoffs yeah
we don't consume a lot of the espn tnt stuff because we have the games up here on sportsnet
but now they're just blasting the feeds on the games that they don't cover and it's yeah well
Well, the only series they're not covering on Sportsnet is this one.
Didn't they have?
They have announcers for the Wild Avs that are Sportsnet guys.
Yeah, yeah.
And it's Hunter Ryan and what's his, DeBrusque, I'm pretty sure, for that one.
And Hunter Ryan Singh does an amazing job.
And listen, I'm not trying to like, listen, that could be an ESPN thing where it's like you need to be generic and you need to be stale and you need to be cleansed.
And I feel like that's probably like, you know, very do not show any personality, whatever.
Like, I get that.
I'm not saying it's a lack of talent issue.
It might be a directional issue.
TNT very clearly values big, bold personalities.
And ESPN has some of them.
But I think they would much rather revert to, let's not offend anybody.
Right?
On one broadcast, you got Paul Bissonnette doing laps because he said Marner wouldn't perform in the playoffs.
And the other one, it's, you know, I'll give P.K. Subban a lot of credit.
He's taking a lot of shit for the shit he's wearing online.
And so they do a segment on that.
But other than that, there's nothing memorable coming out of those segments.
It's not, it's about what PK is wearing, not about what they're saying.
And I think that's the, as a, somebody who produces podcasts along with you guys, that's
the key.
You got it.
You got to have something like, what are you saying that I'm hanging on to?
You know, this show has been around long enough.
PK is going to be great on TV when he's retired.
Whoops.
I think he's okay.
I think he's okay.
That's not enough.
CSPN.
Yeah.
ESPN should never strive for.
Okay.
i just don't think they care about hockey i think tnt does gonna say that right off the
hop i'm glad you were the first uh now when we look at uh one quick thing i want to say
about the vegas lineup so vegas we went through the uh the whole um trade deadline and it didn't
seem like vegas did much that nick dowd pickup really really smart that guy is nails out there
and he's 35 i was surprised by the price they paid i think it was a second and a third it was
worth it really good pick yeah really smart that is what you spend a not a first round pick on a
second and a third you're down yep that's that's a great pick pickup and i would i should i thought
scott lawton would be a better pick there that's been great that's been great can we ask steve
about uh the most important thing to come out of the vegas series all right fine uh well yeah
the thing everyone wants to talk about toronto all right so this is john tortorella maddie you
can't play the video but we can listen to this audio john tortorella with a message to uh mitch
marner playoff doubters from uh vince on twitter you you guys don't see the stuff he does
people here people in toronto all the people that talk about this guy they don't see any of the
things that he brings to a game even if he doesn't score a goal uh i've known that coaching against
him so that narrative is a bunch of bullshit like i said last night mitch doesn't care mitch is a
pro uh he's a terrific player one of the top players in this league and he plays for us i i
don't blame him for saying a single word of that because it's all been true in these playoffs yeah
um mitch cares with the force of a thousand suns oh my god he cares everyone around him cares
with the weight of the universe behind them um he cares so much he might as well be gummy bears
holy holy shit does he care with just a fireball's worth of care um and also um like did john coach
him in 17 no no did he coach him in 18 no no did he coach him in 19 no no did he coach him in 20
coached against him oh good for him who fucking won did he coach him in 21 no did he coach him
in 22 no did he coach him in 23 no did he coach him in 24 no did he coach him in 25 no then shut
the fuck up in 2026 i you know the thing what are you talking i don't mind tort saying that i don't
mind that no it's this guy it's this guy and he should and you got to be rah-rah your guys i think
i think we all sort of knew that this the the the spotlight of toronto um just wore on him
and and you're seeing it's okay and you're and that's okay not everybody can do it he goes to
Vegas he's one of the guys there he's not really wearing a letter he's I'm not saying he's not a
leader but he's not wearing a letter he's not one of the whatever he's one of the higher paid
players players on the team I'm sure he will wear a letter eventually but some guys are just not cut
for it and that's okay and look at him and I wish him well you know the thing about it is is for me
what bothers me is uh as a Toronto fan like I'm I guess they're not expecting Toronto fans to to
watch a lot of this game but ESPN cannot stop bringing up the Toronto Maple Leafs and that's
the part like I don't care about John being asked that question I don't care about John's answer
and I'm happy for Mitch but I'm looking I'm like I'm like guys there's other things here there's
other things to talk about it's always shut the fuck up about Marner until things are going your
way right it's always shut up about Marner until things are going the way that you want them to go
and that's not mitch that's the espn broadcast yeah no but like i'm also talking about like
people going because there is an online component of people piling on and uh i'm i don't feel the
need to repeat myself i was right the whole time i was right if things change in vegas then they
change but the the results were the results in toronto the results will be the results in vegas
yeah i do i'm not insecure in my opinion i was right the whole time it's you and your insecurities
the field need to bring this up all the time him being good now does not erase a decade of
not being good and i'll say this the one thing it's insane and beneath all of us that i need
to say that that's why the the torts quote does bother me because it's so absurd in the thinking
like he brought up toronto there he says yes he did yeah he didn't have to name toronto or anything
but he knew that he was gonna get he was gonna written mitch was gonna love that and yeah his
camp is gonna love that i get that john i didn't do it kid if he got old now let me say it was a
wazzle there john shut up the thing about mitch is we did see all that and when it disappeared
that's when the criticism came right and that that was fair criticism now not all of the criticism
was fair some people took it a little too far sure but we we knew what he was capable of so
when he didn't do it it kind of stood out and so john's like oh you didn't see john i guarantee
you i've watched more leafs games than you yeah i guarantee you i saw i guarantee you i know and
and could see the mitch marner at his best you know remember the beginning of the tampa series
in yeah uh whatever a couple years ago where he went 23 where he had like like seven points or
something like that it was very good that i was like hey there he is he's arrived yeah and then
it tailed off at the end you know and that's the thing so marner scored a hat trick the other day
yep did anyone else see the word first in front of it that means it was the first one
that means he didn't do it other times yeah but it's but that means he never did it here
are you an asshole you don't understand that
anyway it's always shut up about marner i wish till he's doing the stuff that you want him to
do and that's fine i wish him the best because if you don't go be weird elsewhere if you don't want
to be here because there it is different playing in toronto if you don't want to be here if you
don't want to play like that here and we'll talk about matthews in a second then good then you
shouldn't be here yes and the narrative post marner is that the leafs got rid of him and ran him out
of town he's offered him 13 million dollars man they were trying up until the very last moment
to keep him yes they were i know it ended up being a trade but he had the ability to leave
and he chose to leave at the end of his contract and they got a sign and trade done with vegas
and retroactively everybody keeps talking like the leafs wanted him to leave and that the fans
are happy this thing ended when they were still trying to keep the band together until that very
moment they made that trade and he committed
to Vegas one day
I will not be completely exhausted
no he is not
also every time Mitch
scores it means Toronto retro
retroactively gets goals from back
then when he didn't score oh great
oh that's great yeah I didn't know that we're getting a lot of
retroactive victories here because
that means we all won all those games
that's that's great I would
love to Rick and Morty the timeline
where the puck never goes over the glass in game
six against Montreal Vegas
wins the cup toronto actually gets a cup in 2019 2024 in game seven against boston he actually
shoots the fucking puck and maybe it wouldn't have said first in front of hat trick when he
did it a couple days ago um he did have one last night too where he's right in front of the net
and passes that i was like there's the guy i said it on the thing i was like ah and it what had the
play worked it would have been the most beautiful like highlight of last night but it didn't he was
right in front of the net shoot it looking to dominate off the ice as much as your team does
on it yeah yeah yeah our adopted teams anyway in the playoffs uh check out the toyota tacoma
uh a standard i-force engine boasts an impressive towing capacity of 6400 pounds
it's almost like you're the carolina hurricanes going through the playoffs and nobody can touch
you yeah red tag days too right because it's red red and thing you know what i'm saying listen

the toughest of terrain experience power capability and convenience with the toyota tacoma and a 10

a brilliant idea yeah uh also you got the 14 inch touchscreen which is pretty cool too for
especially as you get near all the years and you can't see the small type anymore right steve
yes you're already wearing glasses so you know you need that 14 inches to get that typeface to

now i want to talk uh i want to talk about the canucks and the leafs a little bit here so first
off real quick note on the canucks sardines apparently are close to coming into some sort
of agreement with the Canucks ownership uh to play a more prominent role with the Canucks now
here's where they got to be careful and here's what I was worried about with Sandin in Toronto
um you guys remember when Jim Benning was brought in and then Trevor Linden Trevor Linden hey
Trevor Linden and then Trevor Linden leaves what couple years later and they're furious the
organization's furious with him he's furious with them and it's just okay it's us and Jim now
trevor linden is like the main reason uh from the matthews lottery in 2016 remember the camera
went to all the different gm yes and their disappointed faces his was the saddest easily
the sad absolutely and i think teams had a problem with can you please not put our sad executives on
the television yeah that's part of the entertainment guys get over yourself yeah but he looked like
no one will be sadder than tim murray of the sabers when he missed out on mcdavid
No one will be angry that he got Jack Eichel's Stanley Cup winner instead.
But anyway, I want to talk about the Sedin's thing because, you know, it is it kind of mirrors the Leafs a little bit.
Sundin being in there there, you know, Sunday was even asked at his press conference.
Are you putting your your legacy on the line here?
And he didn't feel like he did.
And I don't think he is.
I've been told Matt's has a lot more.
And I said this on Friday show.
I've been told he's a lot more power than was let on at that press conference.
So that's why I keep getting Keith.
Keith wouldn't talk about who gets the final call.
He's like, we're going to work together.
I'll just tell you this.
Matt's has a ton of power in the Leafs front office.
Trevor, I don't know if it was a power play between him and Jim Benning ultimately at the end.
But Jim sure lasted a long time and was able to manage up better than Lyndon was with.
If the Sedins come in here, they are coming into a volatile situation.
You know, Jim Rutherford has just stepped down.
Maybe they're dual presidents, which would be hilarious.
And they step in.
But Jim Rutherford, who a lot of people industry wide are blaming for what's happened to the Canucks over the last 18 months and, you know, losing Miller and then the decline of Pedersen, whatever, you know, a lot of that they say starts with him.
So if he's still there as an advisor and Aquilini still trusts him, the Sedins have got to be careful.
This is going to be a bit of a minefield, I think.
And they got to be real careful about what they're walking into.
get some assurances in that deal because i think it would hugely benefit the canucks for them to
be there and to set an example they're not that old which i like about it uh they're not 78 yeah
dude like i saw some people like oh he stepped down why brother why he's almost an octogenarian
but we're used to a world where lou lamorella was a gm and did not want to step down
and is still a part of the islanders organization by the way lose the vampire yeah lose never gonna
die no he's no lose yeah the front office hockey job is such a weird position because like pat
verbeek is what like 60 i think he's 61 is pat verbeek already 61 yeah i know way double check
me i'm looking it up i'm looking at what i'm gonna look at tell me i'm 61 tell me you can't
Tell me I'm wrong.
I'm right.
Pat Verbeek is 61 years old?
Pat Verbeek is 61.
And I was thinking about that conversation on this conversation.
Oh, my God.
Because that's a guy I think we'd all agree that he's like peaking right now.
He's phenomenal.
He's doing the modern way to build a team, not through free agency, through trades in the draft.
He's doing a great job.
And grumpily.
And he's 61.
And if you're in regular life, you should be thinking about never working ever again.
You should be winding down.
And he's like, I'm winding up.
yeah these are my prime earning years right how old was jim rutherford when man landed on the
moon that's a good question 1969 i have the answer how already eight he was 20 years old
he was 20 yes when man landed on the moon jim rutherford was 20 he was 20 years old holy
shit he was an adult man yeah so i was an adult man paying taxes and voting and shit
so when neil armstrong landed on the jim rutherford is from a system and came up in a
system where it's like we don't stop we i'm i was good at 60 i would be good at 70 i would be good
at 80 and i understand why he's hanging on to work and why all these guys do i think it's terrible
you should probably you should want to do something else you probably want to spend time with your
family yeah at this point in your life but or maybe not you know or not because you hate your
family but i can see why he's like i'm still gonna be an advisor even though i'm 77 like you know
what this is their culture and it's a weird culture i would take a few calls for several
hundred thousand dollars a year like a few calls a week jim what do you think that's it do you want
to like go to games and tell stories sometimes okay here's six dig i mean here's the thing you
gotta remember too like when you're a hockey executive or a coach or whatever your life is
all-encompassing you don't have a life so when all of a sudden the music stops nobody's gonna
call you anymore I think that's why a lot of people hang on hey well it's also probably a
pretty sweet gig like you get to be at a hockey rink all the time that's amazing we'd kill for
that but I think also when when you walk away like I've seen parents retire I've seen friends
of parents retire and it is a difficult transition and the reason I think these guys hang on is
because a it's an amazing job but b what the fuck do i do now what do i do all i was hockey i was
making millions of dollars and i was powerful and everybody's calling me i'm making trades making
free i'm signing 20 million dollar contracts with players i'm media wants to talk to me there's
sources and everything and then all of a sudden okay i'm just at my cottage now
and it's really quiet i think that's why people hang on but i certainly hope that i'm
well past working at 80 i'm just throwing that out there the biggest psychos are the ones who
go from like i played junior and then i played whatever the a and then i played in the nhl and
then straight from the nhl they go into management yeah like jason spezza yeah like who's shanny
shanny went right to head off the same thing yeah or like brindamore yes like never left a day from
the locker room and they're just doing it their whole life that's i respect the passion i really
I can't not respect that.
100%.
Look at Paul Maurice's career, too, man.
Oh, yeah.
He's like 30 years in coaching
and then probably another 10 years in junior before that.
And then you recognize why some of these guys
are so good at what they do.
It's all they have ever done.
How could you not know everything about the game
if you're Paul Maurice at this point?
And Paul Maurice is still young.
I think he's probably younger than Verbeek.
How old is he?
I'm almost positive Adam's right.
He started coaching in his 20s.
Because as a player, he got an eye injury.
He got an eye injury.
he's 59 that's crazy so he's younger than verbeek he became an nhl head coach in his 20s
yeah unbelievable stuff so jim rutherford uh uh i was just going through his playing career if you
can bring up his management career that would be uh really helpful but his playing career if you
go back to like you were saying junior uh oha with the hamilton red wings 67 68 wow and he played
every single year until 1982 83 with the adirondack red wings and also actually one game with the
detroit red wings so i got you i got you from their head coach sorry in 86 87 of the ohl and
also 9192 in the ohl he started in the ohl with the windsor compuware spitfires compuware
wow you get your computer don't you know 8485 and has worked basically every year since then
so he went he missed the 83 84 season between playing and managing and that's it and he might
have been around and he had a couple years off clearly doesn't care about the game enough
yeah a true man would have worked in 83 true you know true what the hell was he doing yeah
sitting at home being hockey that is so what did you do i have to respect it i have to respect it
man. But I do think the Sedins have
got to be very careful if they're going to get into this
with the Canucks. They got to be the ones that set
the tone. And Mr. Aquilina is
going to listen. He's got to listen. He's got
to listen to these guys. Most successful
era in Canucks history was with those two.
You've got to listen to them. Adam, I have a crazy
counter argument. No, he doesn't.
Stop thinking about things
like a normal person with a normal brain.
This is a billionaire who's
nuts. Yeah, fair.
That's... Allegedly.
No. Allegedly. Allegedly.
allegedly yes we don't know that he's nuts we don't we have no proof of that personally
francesco aquilini nuts is such a long term nuts is so there's plenty of proof
okay it's an opinion yeah he there's plenty of proof of that opinion i'm backing you let's
lawyer this he comes across to me in my personal opinion as an odd duck yeah okay fair fair maybe
even an odd canuck uh oh there you go okay so i want to talk leaves for a second here
because i feel like i feel what's coming you mean the team that got rid of mitch
they chased him out of town that was good anyway uh you do old old it's that's like that old
sweaty fat guy at the bar who's smoking cigars laugh yeah right oh no that would if i did that
i would trigger an asthma attack like i'm not kidding um i didn't like it so here's what's
going to happen this week and i think this is fascinating so the craig berube meeting happened
uh this weekend uh darren drager was on first up on 10 50 this morning and talking about it and
i think drag seems to think that berube is going to stick around i think that's but then then
everybody says that but then they go but the leafs haven't made up their mind yet so i'm not
one way or the other on that uh because i don't think they've made up their mind but what i am
very interested in is public perception when it comes to austin matthews you can see it turning
this weekend jeff o'neill i talked about it friday a little bit with you and then jeff o'neill really
went in on overdrive on friday night and the the issue is and i said this on the show matt sundin
has now come in and whether you like it or not that sets a new standard just by the history yeah
and matt's and i said this on friday never set never held the team hostage never said i won't
play here if you don't he just said i'm here and i'm fucking staying and no i will not wave my
his one weakness was wanting to stay here yes like he loved it here which people did hold against
them yes and people were mad because he could have if he had accepted the trade to philly
you could argue it would have started the rebuild but whatever asking around people still do now i
still but i'm now looking back like as much as the leafs that's also the maple leafs incompetence
too that they didn't rebuild when they should have and um you shouldn't you shouldn't have
done mats the way you did them they didn't pour they really you gotta like context that your
criticism of this guy is that he cared about the team too much yeah like you're sitting in a job
interview and you're like i worked too hard but like what he actually did i don't think we knew
i don't think we knew how good we had it in 08 when he said no and i mean listen you know i think
gary roberts and joe newendike have both said like they think that leaving the leafs was a mistake
after the lockout they both went to florida and the panthers then versus the panthers now two
totally different things like they were like they were pissed off because the security guards
wouldn't let them in the building because they're like we don't know who you are right and they're
like what the fuck what do you mean like we just signed here we're the marquee free agents and
you know toronto is a tough place to play uh matt's though sort of was able to overcome that
now he took plenty of criticism while he was here but he just never really let it get to him at least
never that we saw in the public what we're seeing now with austin matthews i think is going to
backfire and i think austin and his agent judd moldaver ought to be aware i don't know if they
care but the perception now a week ago if i'd said this people be like yeah well i get it what
fucking hopes do they have but now they've got the first overall pick and if you're still that
the vibe has changed completely if you're still as a toronto maple leaf captain captain who has
been to the playoffs nine out of ten years nine straight years and you want to tell tell the
leafs nation via their management even if you don't like leafs management i don't know how he
feels about them that for a sign of trouble i'm gonna go whether that's a fair comment or not
that is the way it will be perceived now is does john shika actually know austin matthews the way
he sort of alluded to in the press conference i've been told no i don't believe him i've been
told absolutely not and that he over perhaps overstated it slightly whatever he was nervous
i'm not gonna not gonna hold him to that but the leafs have to and jeff o'neill said this i'm gonna
quote him direct row their own boat here if you go and you this rumored meeting that they're going
to fly down and meet austin which they are uh first off the fact that they're flying to him
i find very interesting yeah that's what managers do when they're trying to extend an olive branch
they make themselves into the olive branch and they go and see you so maybe they come out of
that meeting and austin goes yeah you know what i like the plan i'm on board let's go but from
everything we've heard and that's been reported by free agent by cj it doesn't matter what the
plan is austin cares about action i respect that but again you're the captain they made you captain
and you are in effect holding the leafs hostage to carry out this plan over the next two months
which is really the only time that you can make a lot of significant moves on the roster right the
next two months are our big roster movement season if he says to them on july 5th yeah i don't like
what you did they could be they could make moves in the next eight weeks in order to keep him
that could screw them for a couple of years or more if he decides i'm still not down let's talk
about leadership on the ice matthews has led the way in a lot of ways he has uh he scored over 60
goals twice scored over 50 goals a bunch of times he won the heart trophy once his playoff record is
checkered but yet he's had some good ones he's had some poor ones right Marner wears a lot of that
Austin's had some poor ones too right oh certainly yeah certainly has Willie's been pretty consistent
of the three of them he's the most consistent yeah um Willie I believe in 24 even though he
missed a few games ended up leading them in goals anyway um which is ridiculous um on the ice he is
consistently gone above and beyond um with some exceptions he's a great two-way player
started a hit he started a block if a teammate's in trouble with someone going after him he won't
lift a finger i mean you said it after he got his knee blown up by gudas had the shoe been on the
other foot would austin have jumped in it sometimes someone asks a question that's so good
it changes your perception of things the leaf should have absolutely jumped in when matthews
got need beginning middle end but the question i was asked is when has he ever done that for a
fellow teammate travis connecting a few years ago was going at austin matthews and matthews
physically you would think could dummy travis connect me like he's a big man austin he's huge
he's huge and heavy and i know he's had the wrist stuff but it's it's the nhl you can't be like well
i can't punch i can't defend you can glove wash you can hug you can grapple you don't have to
punch and marjorie dano as the oldest player in the league comes in and goldberg spears the flyers
and bunting has to come in and help bunting has to come in and help so later that year or the next
year when bunting is in clear trouble with the refs when the refs decide you're the guy we're
going to just completely screw um and players are punching bunting after the whistle and bunting
can't defend himself because if he does he's going to get in trouble with the league or he's going to
put his team down and he doesn't want to do that and the players in the dressing room probably said
hey michael we're kind of sick of that what did the leafs do to defend michael bunting was austin
flying in there no and was he defending bunting the way bunting defended him no he wasn't so
i say that about his leadership
you're the captain you have a different role on this team than everyone else and by the way he
wasn't captain back then it was Tavares that was captain and I had the same criticisms of Tavares
too you want to he didn't jump in a lot more than one leader he's doing it now but yes yeah you need
more than one leader and like this isn't just a Matthews thing like I've said this about other
players around the league remember when the Calgary Flames refused to stick up for Matthew
Kachuk yeah when slam they when Jake Muzzin popped the puck at him and yeah yeah that was ridiculous
that was completely ridiculous and they missed that player very much and the rumor out of Calgary
was they're just tired of kachuk's antics look what he's done since that was literally the report
yeah and now all of us tired of him causing so much shit i'm like now all of us out east in the
eastern conference are tired of his antics at stanley cup parties yeah because he's kicking
ass because he's kicking ass yeah um you're the captain you have more responsibility and more power
than anyone else in that roster.
Did Brad Treliving do a good job
at the Toronto Leafs?
No.
Absolutely not.
Does John Chayka have a resume
that any of us trust?
For the majority of the audience
watching this, absolutely not.
And if you were Austin Matthews,
could you be blamed for not having faith
in what's gone on
and what the team is going to do
into the future?
I wouldn't blame you at all.
you grew up idolizing shane doan this team has apparently punted shane doan out the door as of
today and john jacob for the second time has now done that to shane don't uh don't i don't think
it's personal this time i think last time it got a little weird but it doesn't matter this time
it's not he's just not his guy i think it's context isn't oh yeah okay like it wasn't like
hey get out of here shane it was just more like shane you're not going to be a part of the next
thing your contract's up thank you so much for your service but there's big things and there's
little things and they add up together and i'm sure that's a little thing that i think that's
a part of it you know what another strike against yeah right that's fair here's what i would love
to know about matthews and his leadership the marner stuff leading up to last summer
here's the question that i'm going to ask because i don't know the answer
what impact did he have on that process did he try to sway him to stay did he have talks with
management when it was obvious he was not staying you guys are thick as thieves right that's what
everyone tells me everyone who makes the ship memes and everything what's going on that's your
set up man okay okay so now Mitch is gone well what does the team do well the plan going forward
seems to be Max Domi on right wing and they also went out and they acquired Matthias Michelli
did you have any say in that whatsoever were you like I think I should be playing with Max
where you like go out and get matthias michelli because someone will be like well they went out
and they all they did was they went out and they got matthias michelli you're austin matthews i
don't think you understand okay the rebuttal to that steve is maybe he's pissed off that they
froze him out of that did they freeze him out of it is the question i don't know if they did
we'll never know if they did that is a genuinely stupid thing to do that would be very least by
the way it would be very Leafs and that would be entirely on the Leafs but you're Austin Matthews
I'm not sure apparently they even have the agency to freeze you out apparently he's good friends
with Roslevic and that's why there was rumors about Roslevic to Toronto but Brad did it happen
wouldn't commit because Brad was Brad and Brad was tire kicking everything and and so it never
happened Roslevic did not have a good playoff but he was great in the regular season for Edmonton
he was better than you better listen people randomly fell in love with michelli after the
leafs got eliminated from the playoffs i'm gonna be honest with you that guy only showed up he was
mid he was total mid totally and listen is ross levick much better than mid no but he is better
he is better he performed better ross levick might be michelli with better marketing i don't know i
don't know but i just maybe he's better you know probably a little bit better i think the thing is
is that you know people are going oh well now you guys are turning on matthews like you did to
marner i think what's happening here and jesse i want i want to get your thoughts on this too
i'm asking matthews to do what matt sundin always did which was put the crest before himself and go
above and beyond you're the captain you're one of the best players in the league you're the
greatest goal scorer in franchise history recruitment we need you can help with that
marner the reason i brought the reason i brought yes yes that's such a good point adam one of the
videos that it's my white whale i want to see it so bad the leafs made a video to recruit john
tavaris that kyle dubas showed him at the meeting at the um the meeting that he had with i think it
was six teams when he was a free agent and dubas made a wonderful presentation that was apparently
the best one on account of tavaris ended up signing here mitch marner while still on his elc
was in the video i'd love to know what was said i'd love to know if he was on the ice i'd love
to know what he do all i know is that when they played together in his first season in toronto
tavaris put up 47 friggin goals with marner as his setup man that was marner's role in all that
marner i mean helped the crest and helped himself listen if i can play with john tavaris
for a year getting 47 goals i'm gonna get i'm gonna get a big contract out of it but also
what's good for the goose is good for the gander it's gonna be good for the team it's gonna be
good for me hey let's go has austin done that no what he's doing right now is actually hurting the
team what he's doing right this wishy-washy i don't know i don't know uh you don't know that
he said yes i do hold on i don't know that i don't know that he's hurting the team yet
i think i think steve if they go to that meeting and he goes listen thanks for the plan but i
haven't seen action i don't part of me can't blame him for that okay because i think he's been given
multiple plans before and they haven't followed them through and he's going this is my only
leverage in this scenario right with you people you fucking all of you guys are talking heads how
many how many general managers and coaches have come through here and you've all told me the same
fucking thing none of you have come through so i get it from his perspective on that part
if they have the conversation with him this week
and they get him on board,
then they can move forward.
Where it does start to handicap the group
is if he goes,
yeah, I'm not going to make a decision
until free agency's over.
Now the Leafs have got to take the bull by the horns
and make a hard decision
because you cannot let that linger.
That is the thing.
This is what I'm saying.
That to me hurts the team.
But that conversation hasn't happened yet.
So it hasn't hurt the team yet.
Right.
I have to look at it like that.
Now my opinion changes.
my opinion is based completely on a hypothetical situation yeah right if he changes and he commits
and and everything yeah great okay fine but the notion that he would just sit there and pout and
be like we'll do something i don't think that's what drives me nuts yeah sorry you wanted to go
to jesse yeah i do want to go to jesse but that's okay like you know no point we're happy i thought

jess i think right now it was a complete miscalculation by the people in austin's
camp and him to leak this and these feelings to elliot and cj and whoever else in the media that
knows this directly from them because i it is from them like whether you don't want to believe
it or not that's not coming from the leafs i can tell you that this is from them they fabricated
it they pulled it out of their ass and then put it into the public because that's great for their
careers they are getting their opinion on the matter out there and i believe that this is
austin's opinion he is waiting to see what happens and he has not decided whether he wants to
stay with the maple leafs and i believe him having that opinion right now is a complete
miscalculation on how the fans are going to feel about that because he has not been a great captain
for the maple leafs if this is how he's feeling right now is that how you feel yeah he was gifted
this captaincy in 20 in 24 ahead of that season they stripped john taveras of it don't don't
baby him that's what happened they stripped him of the captaincy and gave it to austin
for every reason that austin is the superstar he's the most talented player on the team
And they've given him the sun and the moon since he's been here as a Maple Leaf.
They want to give him the captaincy the first time, but he decided to moon a security guard when he was in his off time.
He was going to be the captain.
And he lost himself.
I genuinely, yeah, I believe that conspiracy theory that they were going to name him and then he was a dumbass.
And then he was a dumbass and he lost.
And his agent was a dumbass.
and everyone who told him do not tell the team that you did something that's going to show up
in police records that some habs fan on reddit is going to find like what a stupid decision
yeah i said it at the time i'll say it years later with hindsight what the fuck were you thinking
yeah are you out of your mind i think that's more the people around him at that time because you
know listen we were all dumb in our early 20s you do pay people to advise you and that is where
they fucked him on that they did on that adam you've said this a million times but it is the
first sign of trouble for austin matthews in this era in terms of on ice performance for the
maple leafs they didn't make the playoffs it was a bad year he was also injured through all of that
and it was bad and now you're trying to run like that's the perception that the fans are whether
it is fact that you are now going to decide to leave or not the narrative coming out of you
is in i am committed forever when john tavars is asked about being a maple leaf at the end of his
contract last offseason when mitch marner was gone out the door he said i am here to be a belief and
i want to be a maple leaf and that's it marner was like i don't know i had a great time well steve
you can do the best the best mitch impression if you get the ums in there that i can't do
uh yeah well you know i'm just i'm gonna wait until i'm fucking gone to uh you know shoot the
puck and and you know you guys you know saw with your own two eyes that i don't shoot the puck but
um uh that's uh wrong because reasons all i can do is judge you based on what i i know about you
and that's what you've leaked to the media about right now and not about what you may be doing the
future if you're happy with the free agency moves that the leafs make and right now all i'm hearing
is that you don't 100% want to be a Maple Leaf forever.
Like the only thing I should be hearing
out of Austin Matthews is I want to be a Toronto Maple Leaf
for my entire life.
And I'm here to be a Toronto Maple Leaf.
Which he apparently told them
the last time he signed an extension.
Evidently he said, I want to be a Leaf.
But the caveat was,
I don't want things to change significantly
in the sense that like,
I don't want to fall off a cliff because I want to win.
And things have changed very significantly.
And that's why he's changed.
And I think, listen,
if we're going to have this conversation,
I do think we got to have the side.
And I'm sorry, I'm being a pain in the ass here.
No, no, no.
Absolutely.
From his perspective.
Okay.
I let you guys handle this.
And look what you fucking gave me this year.
And let me say this.
What I would love to know is, did he help them at all?
Okay.
And that's fair.
Maybe they froze him out of the process too.
Cause let's be honest.
Shani was very territorial.
Didn't like, didn't like Sundin being around camp.
Yep.
Totally right.
You know, like that's also part of this, right?
So he has trusted management and they've asked for his trust and he's given it.
And then last year is the biggest points fall off in history, 110 years.
And I think it is unreasonable to say that you will have continued success year after
year after year forever for a professional sports franchise.
That is true.
There's a reason that the nine years in a playoff consecutively for the Leafs was a
record because it doesn't happen.
no organization is that consistent forever and be all and end all and the least will forever be a
competitive team they're always trying to be competitive they did not say they're in a rebuild
right now but they just didn't make the playoffs this year because that's what happens sometimes
you have bad years but this one was this wound was self-inflicted jesse this is poor management
yes it was it was self-inflicted because they hired the wrong guy in bradshaw living
but that is going to happen you are going to have years where you don't miss the playoffs
we never heard this out of ovechkin was there a moment where ovechkin was like i'm done in
washington no i'll have i i would go back and look but not that i recall is there a moment
where john tavaris has ever wavered from being a toronto maple no you think that guy doesn't
want a stanley cup yeah he's at the world championship right now i can't believe it
he wants it just as bad if not worse than austin because his asian curve is way down the road from
and put together a pretty damn good year so why am i hearing it out of the guy who's supposed to be
the leader of the team there's there's two things that that i that i want to get out of the way some
people are going to be like well running the team and like having an impact on personnel decisions
that's not matthew's job okay this isn't like an act your wage situation like adam when he was a
teenager working at shoppers drug mart this is the captain of an nhl team making 13 and a quarter
million in salary alone he makes more than anyone running the team and i can i give you a list of
guys outside of ownership can i give you a list of guys who did wayne gretzky had a huge impact
of course on who the and listen those la kings that he stepped into were not great
and he was the guy that there's a reason put all the pieces in place they were like all oilers
yeah all ex-oilers and him and luke robitaille didn't get along so robitaille was traded like
that all happened uh marylamu extremely involved in who the pittsburgh penguins got and didn't get
um this is captains do this they do eiserman absolutely instead of sitting on their throne
waiting for grapes but i don't think that's what he's doing i don't think that's what he's doing
well no but that's that's the way it seems if you're like you know what no i'm a player players
played that's it no you're the captain you're not just some fucking player you're not just some
random guy off the street we need your help here so is this his way of doing that is this his way
of going you better fucking listen to me now because i've had enough with you that could be
the case and i feel like that might be like that would make him the hero gotham deserves because i
want him to do that as badly as you do that would be great this is finally the first time he goes
guys i'm going to leave if you don't if you don't listen to me and that would be great and i hope
that's what makes him stay the other thing this is going to get twisted by the dumbest people you
know that this is them running yet another guy out of town this is born out of please fucking stay
oh yeah we want him to stay yeah this is born and i think ken is like a perfect fit for him we're
not like oh we hate yes he is first of all but this isn't us going oh he's not sure if he wants
to say uh he's not sure if he wants to stay so just trade him that wasn't the end of the sentence
the end of the sentence is we got to run a hockey team here so we need to know what's going on with
our captain who makes 13 and a quarter sheets and scored 60 goals twice yeah and and i think steve
to that point you want him to stay uh i started this because i worried about the public perception
because this has happened we've seen this before it was mitch who misread the public and let's be
honest he was beloved in toronto but there was a defined change between what happened before that
contract was signed and what happened after and it had to do with what his agent said starting
with that toronto star interview the day after matthew signed his extension february 2019 it did
and so so jesse and steve here's the other thing and and o'neill made this point i think it's a
really good one you know what would really help the leafs get better matthew's getting over 50
goals again that would really help how about and over a point of game let's talk about let's talk
about this if the Leafs are seriously considering keeping Craig Berube which Drager says they are
I can't help but think no no I I think I think Drake's reporting is great there I do think that's
coming for Berube's camp he's not an option he's not an option if if they if they go to him in
Arizona this week or next whenever they talk to him and they go Austin we think Berube's got it
this time and if if i'm austin i'm going yeah you better fucking trade me then yeah no i agree
his two worst seasons i agree if you look at and it's not just about the goals guys it's defensive
zone starts it's the boring shit they're playing him like he's dave steckle like so what's he
supposed to do i don't know that's where connor mcdavid steps in and goes you better get rid of
this guy and bring in my guy he did that connor did that or some other captain and connor now
is willing to to to probably get rid of his junior coach to bring in bruce cassidy
the florida panthers and what they were able to accomplish with cap bullshittery uh-huh you can't
accomplish that without communication with the players of course not i don't know any of that
like oh bennett called this guy oh they called they talked for sure they talked there it's
impossible the cap gymnastics it's impossible to pull that all those extensions done at the right
exact right number without there being conversations between players agents and
managers it happens with any team worth talking about around the league why doesn't it happen
here well maybe this is the start of that yeah maybe this is where they say to him austin we've
made a mistake and we have not brought you in on this process and matt's is here he was the captain
he understands what it was like yeah and now now you got people listening to you yeah we want you
to be a leaf for life it but the one thing they are going to have to convince them on and i don't
know if they're going to be able to do this is listen austin we need you to sign an extension
next summer we need you to if we're going to do all this stuff number one number two we are not
going to be great next year and you have to accept that now we're not we got a we got a lot of dead
weight and contracts uh we got slow old defense we've got goalies two of three are band-aids
right who are constantly injured when they're in they're good there are plenty or not there
are plenty of reasons why he would want out absolutely no one's denying that and if the
Leafs don't have the first overall pick nobody blames him for this no if that picks in Boston
today people are like yeah I get why Austin be like show me a plan you fucking idiots I I but
they have the pick now so that does change things because the timeline if I'm not mistaken was the
cj article comes out matthews isn't sure the next day they win the draft lottery yeah and then and
then freach comes out on 32 thoughts and goes that hasn't changed anything that's insane what do you
mean the first overall pick i think that shows you how much the relationship is in peril the the
option the most likely option heading into last tuesday was they don't get a pick at all and they
come out of it with the first one and that changes nothing what are you talking about that changes
absolutely everything and i think that's anger i think that's resentment which i understand
which i understand too and i think that's that's you're nailing it that is him going you guys have
shut me out of this that's what i feel has happened that's why that's why i think they're
on this and i think shika and sundin had better put on a real good sales pitch here and they better
have a great plan and you know what not just austin for us for fans well we deserve a good
plan too yeah and now you can't tell us everything you're going to tell austin stuff but what you
know one of the things we talked about with the press conference and i know that they they scrummed
afterwards and some of the i still don't know what the maple leafs are supposed to try to be
what's the brand going to be moving forward they you know i know that the con the the press
conference got a little off the rails and stuff like that but that's sort of important too i'd
want to know if that if i'm awesome are we big and mean are we flashy and scory what are we what
are we supposed to be what's the brand here so what are we doing what are we doing what's going
on so we'll leave it there what's the goal here but i don't don't be surprised if you hear a lot
of this kind of talk this week i think that's where the winds are blowing and you know the
matthews camp has got to manage that they do so we'll see what happens anything else jesse i think
it's ridiculous that he has two years left on his contract he's already trying to get out
is that wow you have two years you have two years as a toronto maple leaf
now mcdavid and mcdavid does too and they're saying he's got like the the clock's ticking
already on that one mcdavid gave them a discount when has austin ever done that
not the same at all austin and mcdavid not the same not the same okay what did austin get on
that eight-year deal oh he never signed never signed one okay okay all right we'll leave it
there fire the extra it's
gonna be an interesting
week it's gonna be an
interesting couple of
