Starting point is 00:00:57 calendar year 2025 for the Cadillac definition of luxury good morning everybody yeah hey and I say good morning because you're listening in the evening but I want you
Starting point is 00:01:19 to know that we have recorded it in the morning CJ show puck doku challenge is out today if you have not already played it I already played it You already played it
Starting point is 00:01:28 And I bet you did great I had a perfect score of zero No, that's my dream It's my dream What was your score? 22 So I went nine for nine And I had a uniqueness of 22
Starting point is 00:01:39 Jesse, you done it yet? No, and like the zero thing's impossible Because people cheat It's so hard I know You're asking, what? Thousands of people to just be honest When they're sitting at a computer
Starting point is 00:01:50 And they can just go on Hockey Reference HockeyDB, you know People cheat It's so unfair I can honestly, I can put my head on the pillow at night. I can look myself in the mirror. I've never cheated at Puk Doku. Ever.
Starting point is 00:02:02 Actually, I know a guy who might be making a Puk Doku soon. Is it you? Is he wearing a green shirt that looks slightly like a turtleneck, but not quite? How is it? It doesn't look like a turtleneck at all. It has a name. It's called a crew neck. It's thick.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Is that a crew neck? Yeah, that's a crew neck. Which crew are you a part of? That's a crew neck sweater. What crew are you on? I'm team reigning champ. Aritzia recently purchased reigning champ. Did they really?
Starting point is 00:02:34 Yeah. Now they're the owners of that company. I did not know. So I could walk into an Aritzia and get this shirt. No. Probably not. No, not yet. You could get something beige, though.
Starting point is 00:02:44 Yeah? Yeah. They have that at Aritzia. Okay. Beige, dark brown, light brown. You think they have a sweater? We need a Maddie mic. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:52 We need a Maddie mic. We're going to get a Maddie Mike set up eventually here. It's going to happen. I want to know what a beige flag is. I could easily Google it. A beige flag? Yeah. What do you mean?
Starting point is 00:03:02 Well, there's red flags in people, and there's green flags in people. But TikTok tells me there's beige flags. What is it, Jesse? I was going to say, you didn't see the trend about beige flags? No, I didn't. I'm trying to figure it out. The You Know Miles, you guys know who You Know Miles is? No.
Starting point is 00:03:20 He's like the- the rapper on on he's i can't i tell my girl kiss me to the phone yeah that stuff yeah he's hilarious have you have you never seen you know miles you would love you know i have love it yeah you would like that's built for you man i'd probably recognize him yeah no he's based on the lyrics by the way he has like a million and a half followers like he's a great rapper he's just yeah we can't play any you know miles but no i can play it on the audio side for people no just fucking go look them up yeah you don't all right hockey what's going on has been great yeah fantastic fantastic it got no goal support um we got a couple uh a couple
Starting point is 00:04:08 big records broken last night but uh before we talk about last night before we talk about the Leafs game uh freege dropping a freege bomb uh on Twitter talking about decentralization of the NHL draft what does this mean it means basically that it would be like more like the NFL or the NBA draft where uh media and fans show up to the draft but the general managers themselves would stay at home and have a war room and they would call in their picks oh there it is and and you know the thing is is that uh you know nhl media are going to fight this because i'll be honest with you it's a wicked time but is it the right thing to do for the entertainment value of the draft when you have 40 people going up and they're all honoring somebody and they all have to say it and the
Starting point is 00:04:54 nhl first round is four hours long yes it's the right thing you know what i mean there were a lot of things yes we're bringing it up again covid there there were a lot of uh pandora's boxes opened and one of them was what if we got to do the draft and didn't have to go anywhere right and they got a taste of it and then this is important to the equation they got another taste of having to go and it was cute the first time because they're like isn't it great that we're all back together and then the second time 2023 they said fuck this so they're doing an informal poll uh it would likely be changed to 2025 but there is an outside chance for 2024 according to freach and i know here's the thing you watch if you've never watched it watch the
Starting point is 00:05:39 nba draft for the any the the entertainment value even if you don't know any of the players or you can't you don't care or watch the nfl draft you don't have to know any of the players you don't have to care it's entertaining there's something at stake and and i think the nhl needs to come into this century on this one i know it's you gotta listen if anyone's ever been to a draft you understand our reluctance on this like listen logistically it makes perfect sense i understand teams wanting a war room in their own uh building in their own market it would i mean it's kind of the uh perfect combination of uh of uh you know teams get to save money but they also get to make money on the fact that people are still going to the arena even though no one's there yeah um it's
Starting point is 00:06:25 just such a fun time for media that i understand that i understand is selfish okay which is why i understand it good because flying 30 people that you need for your draft to a city every year and 30 times 32 for each of these teams doesn't really make the most sense when we have the technology to do everything remotely i can understand why doing it remotely makes sense if you can meet me where you can understand why i'm sad we forget that the draft is about the players and their families that's what the day should be about and the media us included have taken it over to be a media uh end of school party schmooze and and then the draft uh teams have taken it over to be like hey we're gonna set up and get on the floor and do all our talking and
Starting point is 00:07:12 gm and in the lobbies of the hotel and all that stuff but the draft should be about these 18 year old kids getting to walk up on stage and living out their dream of playing in the national hockey league and having their parents there sitting in the audience in the crowd and smiling and crying the fact it's uh two days as well that's a tough one and like the amount of people who leave during day two like just nah can't even stomach this this is stupid they do such a slog day two yeah everyone's hung over well yeah and i think again um uh the the interesting thing with the nfl draft and the nba draft is a lot of the media still go so all the media members today i'm seeing so many media members and shout out to pete blackburn who's like okay i fully admit that
Starting point is 00:07:56 this is completely biased but i don't i don't want this to change um for that reason because it is fun and it is a way to network and meet people there are values to that 100 all of the nba and nfl media still go you can still go you can still go it's it's it's the here's the thing it's the entertainment value everything about the draft rules except for the draft so okay once again so fans are going and the players are still going yeah interesting if they would like because in the uh in the nfl like you a lot of the players will some even some of the top picks they'll do it from home like because they'll be from like small towns and right in middle america and they'll have like their entire towns in their house and they'll have the the um the nfl network
Starting point is 00:08:41 will send the camera to like their couch and it'll be the quarterback sitting on the couch with his dad and mom and sister next to him and then a whole bunch of family in the background so some of them just stay home and do it from there but it's a good product yeah you may sorry you just made me laugh it's like yeah the whole town is in the living room yeah um they're also at the football game that friday and they're all at the same barbecue like this this is gonna end in just no one goes to the draft there isn't going to be a draft which is sad to me like it's gonna end in oh screw it just do the whole thing no no it won't be all over zoom they'll have the thing in the location because that's still an opportunity to go to a market and sell tickets and engage the
Starting point is 00:09:22 fan bases yeah okay and there are fans there and they're booing picks like if you see the nba draft if there are fans that will boo a pick to their face and he'll walk like the pick will walk out on the draft and with adam silver and they'll be like boo hiss didn't they boo was it yokich or who was the no no yokich was was taken uh during a taco bell commercial famously yeah he his pick was not broadcast and now he's a two-time mvp and nba champion it must have been the next pick then yeah it's probably one of those ones in new york where the knicks fans booed it yeah jets fans also like boone and when the nfl's draft is in new york wasn't it christoph's przingis it was przingis yeah yeah they didn't want him there you go turned out to be pretty
Starting point is 00:10:03 good and they still didn't want him that video who the fuck is tingus pingus i never fucking heard on the tv and then he was good yeah those new york's uh street tiktoks are the funniest things in the world oh my god have you seen those the they're like on the street and they talk to new yorker yeah they say the wildest stuff man uh it's it's uh the uh those are bing bong came from the bing bong thing came up in my feed over thanksgiving and i forgot it had been like a year like you know where it's you know joe by what do you want to tell joe byron i want him to get take me out to dinner take me out i think is that the bronx where they're at and that i don't know where it was filmed it was the
Starting point is 00:10:43 bronx oh my god so few of those like streeter videos just strangers interviewing strangers are good that one got me well i think to get a video that good on because in radio man like i remember uh our our management always be like why don't you guys just go create viral videos oh okay now now ask me ask me this is pre-tiktok ask me if we were allowed to post them on youtube no we were not no we had to post them on the internal player called brightcove uh because everybody uses bright cove um but uh but anyway the uh they were like why don't you guys just go out and do streeters you know and they would send us who's the guy that runs up to people and like overloads them like he's very for a dollar naval naval woman yeah yeah yeah yeah gay people don't
Starting point is 00:11:31 like john oliver like and john oliver's right there like it was oh he's do you like john oliver he's really funny billy on the street on the street yeah like why can't you just do that and i'm like i remember telling them like okay to do billy on the street billy does that for several days and for a minute of content cherry picks you know sometimes eight to ten hours worth of answers also his production crew is world class yes he's got people chasing him they're like no you go out there with a gopro and you make it happen at the radio no resource yeah it's you and they expect you to hold the camera the mic and everything yeah come up with the content yeah then edit it and then post it and they're like do you have any money for that they're like no
Starting point is 00:12:08 no you remind me of my favorite uh mythological creature the content fairy ah yes people think that people in management think that um what happens is you you put an email under your pillow yes but before you go to bed you go make this and you put it under your pillow and you wake up and to realize that the content fairy brought you a video that's going to get five million views isn't that so great oh yeah content fairy did that yeah it's way better than the tooth fairy why can't you just go viral why could yes simply go viral right multiple times anyways bing bong you know bing bong is great the david ayers video yeah do it again yeah exactly as though there wasn't a confluence of circumstances that led to that or the 9-2 nashville or one of the
Starting point is 00:12:57 other spikes in no you know how the leafs lost just a regular game on a monday ah that's the one that's the one this one's gonna be a hit uh speaking of a regular loss on a monday the leafs laid an absolute egg against the blackhawks fart uh here's what here's what bugged me the most about that game by the way the leafs are they did set a record that cannot be broken excellent what do you know what it is there was a few records set so i'm going to be giving you guys trivia all all episode i hope you're ready leafs set a record that cannot be broken uh most ryan reeves mentions no no jesse jesse want to take a stab they are the first team ever to have conor bedard win a game when he does not score a point yes i wouldn't even go that far
Starting point is 00:13:46 they're the first team to hold conor bedard pointless wow yeah and they lost and they lost and they lost mine was also a record yours is also right so maybe they said two um uh but now here's the thing uh when you're looking at at the game uh if i had told you that conor bedard was going to be held pointless on monday when we did the show you'd been like great feel like we got a great shot at this they definitely won uh they definitely did not and here's the worst part is they let cory perry get the best of them and get the game-winning goal i know dude so they said on the broadcast they're like he has never scored a game-winning goal against the leafs which is impossible yeah i don't know how that's out especially when he was good and they were so
Starting point is 00:14:27 bad yeah i guess because they didn't play the ducks that often yeah and then matthew scores and i'm like great now it's gonna be cory perry at least cory perry doesn't win it and then they called it back yeah oh that part yeah yeah yeah i was like you son of my gun i listen i i do want to break down the game um but i i i there was a lot about this game after the game that was about the leafs defense right it's terrible okay it's terrible it's also game three yes but it's terrible it's terrible uh but i want to say this if the offense is going to be anemic if it's literally if it's going to be because the only line that i found was really creating chances was nylander tavaris for a good good chunk tavaris looked good he looked great
Starting point is 00:15:11 he had a couple of great shots if they're not going to have the intensity they had at the end of the game at any point throughout the game listen you can't hold up that intensity for 60 minutes i get that but you could do it for a couple minutes at a time here and there and they didn't it drives me nuts when the Leafs are losing a game and they pull the goalie because you're just like oh no we're gonna show up so now we know what it looks like when you're trying uh so we know what we were getting the rest of the way during this game stunk it was garbage and this is the thing you you don't even play peter marazic you're playing arvid soderblom who's whose career save percentage is in the 890s now blackhawks fans are really high on this guy and i'm gonna
Starting point is 00:16:00 trust them he'll be their starter before chris he looked he looked you think so he looked great but you can't let him get on his game but they let him get on his game they were terrible in the first yeah he's i quietly i mean as hot as you can be through two games he's got like one of the best save percentages in the league yes through two games through two games i'm happy you know what it is off the top of your head i don't i know we had a really good first game i have it here yes like a 960 it's a 955 955 all right all right and what about what about his his goals against average just don't look at the screen do not look at the screen uh one one on the button one five one one five one sorry oh well he's a piece of shit you lose garbage i said i'm happy
Starting point is 00:16:43 for arvid but i just want to say i i do feel like he's still a he's still kind of a rookie goaltender jump on him yeah man this is a bad team and a rookie goaltender it doesn't matter if he's going to be the starter eventually he doesn't need to start that role tonight i will say the blackhawks um had some like playoff tendencies in that game and the leafs were just not feeling it like we're not engaging in any of this shit they were doing a lot of like really low-key like stick grabby stuff and just the sort of thing that is like almost never going to get called but exactly the sort of thing that is typically their achilles heel when the penalties go away and we saw how kind of useless the team was uh at five on five because most of the game
Starting point is 00:17:32 was played at five on five they took a few stupid penalties it was a rare uh it was a rare game where i want to say chicago had like four power plays at least had two um yeah it was just but it was just a butt well i also thought of a game i also look at the um the reeves and perry stuff because obviously there was the nikita zeitz have hit which i think was more of he tripped and it was bad timing with noah gregor like i don't feel listen no listen you can you can not like noah gregor as a chicago blackhawks fan i get it but no one's accused him of being dirty and and like matt cook right he fell he fell and he hit his face and that sucks so perry starts yapping and the thing about it is that like perry did the smart thing he didn't fight reeves he challenged
Starting point is 00:18:20 him to a fight and then didn't fight of course because that's what you got to do but the leafs who's done this to them many many times perry's done this to them marchand's done this to them it is an achilles heel when people do kind of get under their skin with these types of moves no you know what i thought that was that was low-key ryan reeves doing his job well yeah because he was like do you want to go because we can go yeah but also in the past who would have been having that conversation with perry like at least michael bunting at least he's well exactly who was on the top line yeah right so at least you have that barrier like i don't know to me it was just um that was people kind of seeing what they wanted to see and missing missing the entire rest of the
Starting point is 00:19:08 game like that that exchange had anything to do with chicago being the better team that one night god i hope it's that one night yeah me too power plays by the way were four to three four to three yeah okay they must have been at the end of the game yeah oh didn't chicago take a penalty with like 12 seconds i think so oh yeah that that one at the very end where it was uh six on four of them yeah and the leafs go oh for three as a result this is why power play percentage kind of sucks kind it's like teams must have their own internal stats because that's 12 seconds of a power play is not really i mean that's nonsense yeah um the other thing i want i wanted to bring this up is is around that time the leafs had that goal called back and they put a solid 40 seconds
Starting point is 00:19:54 back on the clock happened at 1946 by the way the cross checking on uh jason dickinson on austin matthews okay 14 seconds to go in the game there you go fart yeah so you know the leaf score and it looks like they have i don't know 15 to 20 seconds left to go and then six and then it's called back okay six seconds and then it's called back and they put the clock they reset the clock because of an offside to 51 seconds and again i ask you um and and and i would say this for anybody i've said this for years if it's over 30 seconds of pressure the offside should no longer count it's if that slightly after 30 seconds that's fucking your fault because hockey changes possession very quickly like at when when is it oh what when have you missed it in theory
Starting point is 00:20:41 this would never happen but in theory you could go offside five seconds into the first period have possession for the entire rest of the first period without a whistle score with one second to go review it for offside and replay the entire
Starting point is 00:21:03 20 minutes that is that is how the rule is written right now that is it unless I'm mistaken so like there needs to be a time limit are you gonna go back 20 minutes like that's an extreme version of it that's so silly but it's how it's written it's an extreme version of it that would never happen but like until it
Starting point is 00:21:21 does 30 seconds what if it's here's that here's my thing what if it's overtime and you see how play how teams are trying to shut down offensive teams like the least where um they'll they'll win the face off because keith keith wants to go on the defense on on uh on overtimes and then okay so camp loses the face off and they just shut it down they just pass the puck between the three of them if the Leafs gained possession were offside and held it for three and a half four minutes and they challenged for offside that could be taken back yep and like I know Habs fans are gonna be listening to this where was this game one when we had a goal I agree with it in any situation it's just I get it I've been saying this last year too like this is not a uh it's
Starting point is 00:22:05 just a weird rule that they do that it yes yeah okay because in theory you could replay a near entire 20 minute period um so what like i want i want to know what the record is for the most time put back on the clock because of a review i know they've done over a minute i can't remember the specific example what are we doing but yeah that's so silly so that means that means that that team could have like literally skated off the ice and just let the goalie figure it out like if it's offside in theory you could just leave you just put your stick down and go okay whenever you guys are ready whenever you're finished like at what point does you you know how when the puck goes in but no one notices the the horn of god plays yes and then it goes to review and they go actually
Starting point is 00:22:59 the puck went in and then you know they figure out the clock from there which is another situation where they can put a lot of time on the clock when do we start implementing that for offsides like it's been a minute but the play is still going but it's also offside at what point does someone intervene and go no no well because offsides is a challenge right so yeah you could in theory it could all happen the offsides happens and then nobody challenges it so it keeps going you know but they in the last what is it last two minutes it comes from the refs that's why they had all those challenges uh in the last two minutes there in the least game like those weren't challenges those were from up top right so it's just miserable also offside on an empty netter
Starting point is 00:23:45 silly i'm on the side of getting it right and that you can't have the egregious offsides that why the reason we're here is because an egregious offside if this is the if this is the other side of the coin then i'll accept it because i don't i don't want the one where it's actually missed to have an effect on the game so if we have to sit through a replay for a minute i'm okay with it oh i wish it was a minute just yeah i know you know what i'm with you jesse but i feel like after 30 seconds if the team has been in your zone for over 30 seconds and you haven't been able to clear it that that should be a continuation but what if they came in off sides yeah but you can then you're just playing bad defense like i'm sorry but most teams are able to turn the zone off side
Starting point is 00:24:30 it came off of an illegal play yes it was born from you having uh an advantage yeah that you shouldn't have had everything after that is man is wrong because it was an illegal play i'm just on the side to get it right that's why i think robot umpires use as much replay as you want i don't think there should be a challenge system i think there just be a guy sitting in a booth who has all of the replays and he says hey this is wrong go fix it and then we fix it we get the game as right as possible first of all i think as long as you're going to have the the game reffed by human beings there are going to be mistakes no so as long as you accept that as long as you accept that then getting it right is not your first priority having it reffed by human
Starting point is 00:25:07 beings is your first priority in which case there's going to be some allowances for things to go wrong no robot umpires just for angel hernandez games okay that's fair i'm what's the point what's the point honestly in having because all the players are chipped right you chip their skates if you wanted to what's the point in having linesman honestly like i'm down for ref i understand what you're we don't need linesman we don't need them you don't need linesman for anything the only thing they do is call offsides fucking icings and then they they do that fake drop of the puck in the fucking playoffs because they're the star and we're all here to see them like we don't need linesman anymore i'm sorry there's actually no reason to have them
Starting point is 00:25:46 If you look at tennis, look what tennis has done. No, seriously. I know. Seriously look at it. There's no need for lines. What do they fucking do? You know what? They get it right.
Starting point is 00:25:56 They occasionally call it hooking from across the ice. I saw it from 200 feet away and advised the refs on it. Never except for when they do. What about fucking icing? Is that hard? Also, I think the majority of time they get offsides right. Yeah. I know.
Starting point is 00:26:12 And it's so much quicker than a rope. So what if we could just be perfect on the offsides rather than 95% of the time? If you're on the side of getting it right, why don't we get it perfect with computers? I'm saying they should get it right because most of the time they do. And I'm talking about the 2%
Starting point is 00:26:28 when we just need a guy who's like, hey, his phone was offside. Go bring that back. I think we're in such an interesting time in our world and in sports where we're like, give the computers more power. We said that. and now here we are in 2023 and we're like perhaps too much perhaps computers shouldn't be able
Starting point is 00:26:49 to make uh joe joe biden ride a dolphin and make it look realistic looks real now you guys are you're you're missing what could have happened what could have happened would have been the funniest thing ever and because it was put in the hands of the leafs it didn't happen what was it i must have missed that the there was uh six seconds left in a 3-1 game where the leaf scored to make it 3-2 what is the likelihood of the leaf scoring a goal in the remaining six seconds like they're almost zero almost zero they have done it now they review it okay take the goal away right 50 seconds back on the clock put 50 seconds back on the clock two goals in 50 seconds possible rare i was rooting for it so bad but much more likely than one goal in six seconds if they scored a goal that got
Starting point is 00:27:51 called back that gave them an opportunity to win the game and then they did it that would have been incredible in the nfl you can decline a penalty you can decline you can decline a play this is this is so if you're luke richardson think about it like this don't challenge it no give him the goal give him give him the goal no but it wasn't it wasn't didn't come from luke you know i know what i'm saying is that even if the so they but it wasn't it wasn't luke did challenge did he not no and so in the last in the last minute it's automatic from the refs so then here's then you should still have the option to challenge or to decline because for luke that's way better you know you're not scoring in six seconds that's actually see you see this is why i was cheering
Starting point is 00:28:30 for it so hard that would have been because it would have been the most ridiculous conversation of all time the black black hawks fans would have been mad that the goal was overturned because damn it if the leafs had just scored on us we would have won and also i'm so upset also the leafs video review crew i think is now 12 for 12 yeah they're they're perfect they're stupid they're unbelievable yeah it's the best video crew in the business they ought to be now do they i always wondered about the actual um execution of that because clearly they're in a room somewhere right or they're watching the game and they're looking to replay whatever so do they phone call sheldon keith does he have an earpiece
Starting point is 00:29:10 like how does that work i think it's uh dean chanel he because he was the one during the habs game who was in keith's ear and i think he's got an earpiece and like something in his sleeve oh yeah wow yeah so they got to mic him up before every game dude dude like he's going into like a mafia thing and trying to get trying to get stories it's uh better than the rat it's better than baseball because they literally use the phones and you'll see john schneider on the phone to the dude and who's in the video room being like hey yeah go go challenge that john it's you're gonna get it wrong and we're gonna all be upset and the jays suck but like that's what they're talking they actually have the old the old phones they talk to the bullpen and all yeah
Starting point is 00:29:50 you know well i wonder if that's because they don't wear long sleeves he's got the mic in his in his sleeve right so like it's not like you'd have You know what I'm saying? No, he's got to hide it in his tie. Right, but, and baseball has a really bad history with, didn't remember like the Jose Altuve, like don't rip my jersey off? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:10 You know, there's a little bit of that going on too. No, that's not what happened. Except for it's pretty obvious that that happened. Are you guys against like all the technology that baseball uses now? Like the pitch calm, where if you're not familiar with baseball now, instead of, they don't call,
Starting point is 00:30:25 the catcher doesn't call pitches using his little fingers. If you're familiar with the catcher, he's just figuring to put down one, you throw a fastball. Now they have a little device on their wrist that they press the button and they're like, hey, throw a fastball. And in the pitcher's hat, there is a little device. Is it like computer generated? He's like, fastball? Yeah. No, literally.
Starting point is 00:30:45 Yeah. And then that's how they get the pitches. And they can do things like throw to second base, like call a pickoff move and that sort of stuff. I like that. I think that's cool. It enhances the game, makes it more exciting. I thought you didn't like technology. What I I'm, I'm advocating for technology.
Starting point is 00:31:00 I'm trying to take the human element out of it. Cause here's the thing. Here's, here's what's crazy about baseball. It's about getting the call, right? Except for the strike zone. Who's the pitcher? Why is it? Why is it?
Starting point is 00:31:13 Why is it that we have that fucking box that we can look at if every player and it changes need an elbow, I see it in every single player or need a, need a boobs or whatever it is. And they're like, they're like, okay, well it's a, there's the strike zone and it's way out and wow he's rung him up what the fuck is it there for i think progress is slow when they're getting there like they're trying they tried it out in triple a or double a they tried the robot yeah the robot they're getting there how did it look okay did it work yeah i have no problem could it have been one one hundred percent of the time yeah a hundred percent less angel hernandez if you believe that the box is accurate then they're accurate 100 okay yeah that's the
Starting point is 00:31:51 thing so they're getting there i'm telling you guys there's no need i think there's still need for an ump on the bases right but we don't need if if if the whole point of replay is to get the call right in baseball's terms uh why can't you challenge a strike especially a strikeout well then we get into the whole let's just have robot umps i think it's so much easier to implement in baseball than pretty much anything else it's like a static game yeah like offside I'm like, what's the old guy term? That's a whole other kettle of fish. Right.
Starting point is 00:32:29 You've seen a kettle full of fish? If we're going to keep linesmen, guys, I'll concede keeping linesmen. But what I need, okay, this is my request. Except for Dan Kelly. Linesmen get a two-minute penalty for fake dropping the puck. You get a two-minute penalty. So there's only one linesman for the next two minutes? I don't want any.
Starting point is 00:32:46 Both linesmen go off, too. This is a summary justice. All right? I want them both gone. there's no icings there's no offsides two minutes it's the worst part of hockey they are it's disgusting it's the worst it's fucking terrible marner was given it i was at chicago or was it saturday night against minnesota he was pissed at one of the umps or umps uh icing guys whatever yeah linesman he's doing that he's got a i don't uh think they care for him mitch marner yeah he's
Starting point is 00:33:15 he's got to watch it this is and i fucking hate that too what do you mean he's got to watch it he's just asking them to drop the puck no half of half of hockey is like a personality game like you're fighting the rest it's like are we friends do you like me am i gonna get this did i sign fucking sticks for your kids or play poker with you that's disgusting stupid the bedard marshand thing was hilarious like in fright marshand carried him into the bruins bench in front of a ref and i'm like yep welcome to the league kid they don't call those yeah did it involve him yeah yeah have fun and you know what full credit to the chicago blackhawks i just want to say on back to the game um they came into toronto they're they're not a good they're
Starting point is 00:33:56 not a great team by by any stretch no they played a great game and i think they protected this young kid who was playing on a pretty big stage and they've done a great job of that throughout the first few games of this season because they are on a tour of the toughest places to play toronto's not one of them not yet not yet we need a little more face punching i think yeah um uh some some good d um they did get a few really good saves um and i tell you what you know i talked about max domey like needing to have a great game against his former team i'll throw jake mccabe in there too both guys who were on the blackhawks last year stunk that was a bad game does max domey had a good game uh jake mckay no he didn't no has he had a good oh oh no he didn't i thought
Starting point is 00:34:45 you said he had a good game i was like that was like his worst one jesse no he didn't yeah sorry he didn't um he has has max domey had a good game i'll say it without my blame no uh like sheldon sheldon keith played him less than 12 minutes because he should have And Jake McCabe, you can see his frustration. I'm trying to remember which goal it was. Entwistle? Mackenzie Entwistle started the game. Yeah, they didn't have Gutman in the lineup, though,
Starting point is 00:35:20 which I thought was an advantage for the Leafs because they scored a game-winner against them last year. But, yeah, he slammed his stick on the ice. Both former Blackhawks were awful. Awful. So, like, again, it's three games into the season. But it was maybe about time that the Leafs weren't rewarded for playing terribly in their own end.
Starting point is 00:35:44 Yeah, they weren't propped up by Austin Matthews scoring a hat trick. No, the goals aren't. Yeah, they're winless without a Matthews hat trick. Which is the problem. Weird how that happens. Yeah, the goals aren't always going to pour in like water. Sometimes you're going to have to actually take care of your own end. um and and joseph wall ironically gave them maybe their best goaltending performance of the year so
Starting point is 00:36:09 yeah because sammy hasn't been great and wall looked decent he looked decent he only allowed three yeah and like one of them's a cory perry breakaway where it it was like running like molasses cory perry up the ice who's the slowest person on planet earth it just weights out a wall and goes uh what is the five hole or did it sneak by the right pad i forget yeah it was along the And, like, Tyler Johnson on the power play essentially had a breakaway. Like, it was bad. It was bad. They had bad.
Starting point is 00:36:38 It was bad. It was an average game. Like, it wasn't like the sky was falling. Ruined by bad moments. It was the first game where they had to work for goals, and they didn't work for it. No, not at all. It was brutal. And, yeah, the defense wasn't there.

Starting point is 00:37:52 for the Cadillac definition of luxury. The Edmonton Oilers finally broke out. uh before we get into kind of talking about the game can you tell me what record was broken last night with between edmonton and nashville oh i only know the macar one what's the no what was the edmonton record jesse any idea uh does it involve leon dryside it does um most individual goals versus the national predator i wish that were the case um no with his 127th and 128th power play goals um what uh he passes glenn anderson and ryan smith to take sole possession of the franchise's all-time record for power play goals wow he's not even 30 he's 27 he's gonna
Starting point is 00:38:41 lose that record one day i hope his teammate i hope potentially understand how incredibly special the players on the oilers are like yeah i really do i was looking at mcdavid today because of that stupid fucking goal he scored. And I guess we'll talk about that. He has a moderately realistic chance of being the second highest score of all time. Like passing Gordie Howe, passing Marc Messier, passing Jarmer Jager even. He's still over 1,000 points away. But if he's 26?
Starting point is 00:39:20 Yep. if he were to get an average of a hundred points a year for the next eight years which feels conservative yeah he'd be most of the way there yeah and then he would have his mid and late 30s he's truly truly goofy and then there's dry sidle who's gonna finish his career with like 200 power play goals insane holy shit yeah and like the craziest two-headed monster of i think my lifetime do you you know when you talk about season records like with the toronto maple leafs it's like yeah of course matthews is in the top five we haven't had uh like a a ton of talent walk through the doors the oilers have had the best players of all time them and the penguins like just super lucky
Starting point is 00:40:05 100 and and so for them to be leading any scoring category when wayne gretzky at one point put up you know several seasons in a row put up 200 points power play goal yeah on the Oilers yeah at 27 oh that's madness yep absolute madness he's just so good he's just so good also I was surprised that Ryan Smith was up there sometimes you forget because Ryan Smith was very very good and you know um through the Doug Wade era and then beyond and being captain that sort of thing but he was a part of the dead puck era so you never place players like that the the 97 to what 2004 into especially with the edmonton oilers high scoring categories but he kind of scored the only way you could in that era which was like net front off a rebound yeah so kind of kind of made
Starting point is 00:40:56 sense yeah well some sense but if i had to guess the two oilers all time uh it wouldn't have been glenn anderson and ryan smith not not in a million years no no i guess two uh in the 80s probably with gretzky and messi and those guys um there just weren't as many penalties called like i don't know you you look back at like super cut replays of and we've mentioned this before doug gilmore just laying hits and like all the hits are illegal now oh and i so i wonder like what did you have to do in the regular season in the 80s to get a penalty actually called the difference between uh fan anger with penalties today and yesterday um today we get mad at the penalties that aren't called when we were growing up we got mad at the penalties that did because
Starting point is 00:41:41 you'd be able to look at like 20 examples from throughout the game of that exact same thing happening and what it was is the player will have done it three or four times and the ref goes i'm gonna call the fifth and then they do it and the player gets all mad and he's like i told you i was gonna call the fifth yeah yeah it's just arbitrary randomness this is why i've always wondered like Like, should the NHL experiment with, like, minute-long penalties? Minute-long penalties. Why? Well, because, like, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:42:15 That's illegal what you did, but also we don't want to put you in the box for two minutes. So here's a minute. I don't know. I don't know. But you don't want to put more decisions in the ref's lap. They already have too many to make. Yeah. It's a tough game to ref.
Starting point is 00:42:30 I'll give them that. Oh, it's fucking impossible. I wouldn't want to do it. linesman you got it easy can i ask you guys a question uh about the narrative coming out of last night because because they had a 6-1 win but last night was the first night where mcdavid and dry saddle played the majority of their minutes together and uh woodcroft will do the thing where like he'll start he'll end uh dry saddle shift a little later so he joins mcdavid but last night was not that in that instance if you go take a look at the shift chart on nhl.com you'll see that
Starting point is 00:42:59 the majority of their minutes that came out within like five seconds of each other and they're on the same line pretty much the whole game and it led to a 6-1 victory so uh the narrative coming out of that is is that the winning formula for the Edmonton Oilers going on a playoff run it works in the regular season doesn't work in the playoffs and Ryan Rashog was pretty adamant about it on on uh on on right show on TSN and he said playing McDavid and Dreisaitl together will probably win you a division championship maybe even a conference title during the regular season playing them on separate lines will win you a stanley cup it's an interesting theory i mean like i mean very few people watch as much oilers hockey up close as ryan rashad yep um and the
Starting point is 00:43:41 the other thing is like there's just another acknowledgement that like regular season hockey and playoff hockey they're two different sports it's it's like you might as well decide the larry o'brien by having like basketball in the regular season and laser tag like that's the difference between regular season hockey and playoff hockey um i remember the criticism years ago of having mcdavid and dry saddle on the same line was that yeah obviously they're going to dominate while they're out there but they don't have the depth the team does not have the depth to do that i think now they might um yeah it's still not the same team uh lines two through four um when you take one of those guys off it um but they have more depth than they used to evander kane ryan
Starting point is 00:44:29 newton hopkins was always there uh zach hyman it's sort of up to as stupid as it sounds like the dylan holloways and kind of connor brown and yeah they gotta they gotta figure it out and create options can you get connor brown maybe not to 20 but to 15 goals yeah like these are the sort of conversations we're having can you get fogel to like i don't know 12 and fogel's playing top six minutes right so if you look at the lines and how they kind of shifted out during the game it was a lot of dry side okay mcdavid and then nugent hopkins fogel hyman uh and then that the third line they ran out kulak holloway broberg brown and mcleod that was their full unit on the on the third there i was like they put kulak on the wing no no like i just read out all five oh
Starting point is 00:45:16 okay but that's kind of how they all shifted out to start the game and that's how they kind of stayed throughout it with the defensemen obviously switching out in and out but mcdavid and and dry seidel they they played their game together and it's it's an interesting tactic because you know it's gonna work you know it's gonna get it's gonna you're gonna lead us you're gonna get six goals but in the playoffs does it translate it also i'm curious about what they did in the previous games because i i have to admit i did not uh check the euler shift chart for the uh for the vancouver game of us got to do the nerd work for you but but with with that in mind you wonder if jay woodcroft did that to get the guys going like this is the nashville predators there's
Starting point is 00:45:52 an opportunity to you know uc star wars is a really good goalie they got pulled but the rest of them they don't have an answer they don't have an answer for sure not for that most teams don't and and and frankly the oilers should have beat the canucks at least one of those games right i mean the second game was stupid yeah that's one of those ones like i don't even know if you can feel bad about it well not if you're a forward i think if you're an oilers fan you don't feel great about it yeah so woodcroft needs a win they need a win here to just feel good doesn't mean you know whether or not it's irrational being irrational is part of being a human being and even the most advanced analytically unbiased person you've ever met has biases has emotions
Starting point is 00:46:32 and has shit that doesn't make sense you got to remember that so um i'm wondering if he goes you know i'm putting them out together i just want to fucking crush these guys they'll feel good against the goalie like uc sorrows who's very very good yeah who unfortunately is one in three already but he's very very good and we'll let them dominate and have some fun fuck it's like how many games is there 82 so that's so many so you know and i get what we're saying he's got it they gotta play them separately in the playoffs because you want a line match and you want to do all the crazy shit that coaches get into but a game what is this three three out of 82 yeah i I think you let the boys go out, have a good time, and roll over the Predators,
Starting point is 00:47:14 who everybody who signed there this year knew that the max level of games they were playing was 82. Like, Ryan O'Reilly did not sign a contract in Nashville going, I want to play in the playoffs. He knows. Come on. I have Nashville as a playoff team. Why?
Starting point is 00:47:30 I think they're going to overestimate. They're going to surprise you. Overachieve? Overachieve. Sorry. Yeah, that's where I got. um i think you overestimated with the uh maybe he wants to play sorry i'm not expecting to play in the playoffs that's a better characterization with the getting the guys to just go out and
Starting point is 00:47:50 have some fun the thing that babcock and keith both had the same mentality about was getting your players ready to play postseason hockey you know you spend the one through 82 the how many games 82 as preparation for getting the team in a playoff mentality so you practice for the postseason during the regular season obviously you got to win enough games to get there along the way but a lot of that is getting that in the right mentality and the the criticism i get it i don't agree with it at all i think i'm i'm actually on your side adam just let them go out there and have some fun to get them going but if this isn't how you're going to be playing the playoffs why are you practicing this in the regular season i guess it's to do that mental gymnastics of just
Starting point is 00:48:31 like hey it's game yeah it's great we got time good we got time sometimes you got to get the vibes yeah you know i feel that get the uh the big guys going and here you know who got going last night that nobody's talking about is jack campbell yeah that freaking kill did you see that little uh kick up save that he made i mean listen there we go jack ability sure he's you just never know what version of jack campbell you're gonna get but i i know it's perfect wait no i gotta to look it up how many games there are there's 82 that's a lot of games 82 games that's so many i wish somebody had mentioned it i wish someone had um uh yeah and you listen i know it's score effects but he did shot stop 42 shots and he stopped every uh even strength shot the one
Starting point is 00:49:17 goal came on the power play you know and that was and the even strength shots mean more it's important that we understand okay shut up i thought you meant it for a sec shut up you cheeky dick that's oh my god not all shots are created equal not some come with the man advantage they're not man there were some uh responses to a tweet i i made what tweet mcdavid's little spinny goal oh the what do they call it they're calling it the mick pirouette yeah and i was like that's one of the craziest goals i ever saw and people earnestly were like no no i've seen better goals and it's because uh one of the one of the preds i think it was number 45 i don't know just flew by it no well he yeah he tried to pick up the puck on his backhand he lost it so that means
Starting point is 00:50:08 that mcdavid while fucking spinning around on his knees getting up picking up the puck and sniping on one of the best goalies in the league isn't that impressive you're right it's not have you seen when ovechkin did it on his back the whole time and he had the puck yeah but that was better you know what it is steve dangle you know what that's why you're not a sports net anymore idiot yeah you're right you're right you know what i think it's foolish to take joy in anything actually i think we should all be miserable all the time you're right people are people are better people are saying the goal is overhyped yeah i you know because it's the internet now there is somebody on on who responded with and i'm not kidding now again it's remember it's
Starting point is 00:50:57 twitter so you can get anyone to say anything yeah right do it can you believe i can somebody said ryan reeves could have done that now listen yeah i i think ryan reeves is spectacular spectacular No, he couldn't. But I don't think so. And isn't it funny, guys, how miraculous crazy shit happens when McDavid's on the ice? And he makes it look kind of easy, doesn't he? You know that silly movie about Sully, the guy who landed the plane in the Hudson? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:27 And they do the test over and over again. And he's like, okay, can we get serious here? Like, you got to put the human element in it. Like, we didn't know this was about to happen. so you know all your uh the basically they had to prove that it wasn't their fault that they had to land the plane in the hudson and so they had test pilots uh doing simulations of it but they all knew what was about to happen yeah if you told nhl players all right we need you to fly in there do a spin on your knees pick up the puck and then score on uc sorrows if you told them that the puck
Starting point is 00:52:06 is going to be there for them and to pull that move off and do it less than half of them would have been able to pull it off sure especially knowing what was going to happen ahead of time yeah mcdavid did that shit on the fly now human element jesse i'm bringing up the video because i want you to pause it because we can't watch the video okay i want you to pause it when mcdavid is about forget the spinorama i want to know i want to see mcdavid right as he's about to take the shot oh right as he's about to take the shot where's uc soros in his net he's right at the top of his crease cutting the angle he is uc soros is perfectly positioned there he's pretty much like i mean he maybe leaves a little bit of the far but again human element right yeah all i'm
Starting point is 00:52:53 saying is that that shot is a fucking great shot too no one right under the blocker like holy shit no one no one goes from a million dangles a second to shooting quicker than mcdavid his release is so stupid it's crazy it's so stupid and the whole point i was trying to make with my tweet is like this doesn't like at the end of his career he's gonna have the most ridiculous highlight reel of any nhl player ever ever what about grit what about gretzky nothing i've seen his highlights nothing on that shooting on mailman i just like and like again he scored more on mailman than anyone else feather pads in nhl history yeah literal feather pads and leather and it was different it was a different sport i understand it time travel doesn't exist i get it
Starting point is 00:53:42 i get it this is going to be at the end of his career he's still in his mid-20s it's going to be the most ridiculous highlight reel any player has ever had ever yeah but the defenseman had the puck uh on his backhand and blew it oh oh it doesn't oh well matter sorry never mind sorry can you can you actually delete this segment yeah no take it all back it's terrible take it all back we shouldn't even watch this what i meant to say was fuck hockey don't watch because boo no that's a that's a fucking crazy goal it's a guys crazy listen i I understand wanting to be contrary, and I get it, but you're objectively wrong. I get that better goals have happened.
Starting point is 00:54:26 That's not the point. The point is this one is also cool. No. No. And you know what? You know, there's a standard for cool goals, Jesse, and this doesn't mean. This is the first ever cool-looking goal to be born from a defensive misplay. Aren't they all?
Starting point is 00:54:44 Stop! It's weird that a person who is completely out of position leaves another person open. it's crazy man man that's nuts hilarious hilarious oh my god i was losing my mind i'm like what i need to know what brings you joy so i can find as much of it as possible where that's nuts in terms of mcdavid goals i think it's three i forget the one where he dangles through everybody is one against the well he did that twice though yeah so i think rangers yeah and i'm trying to remember who the other team was yeah i can't remember the second one at all jets i don't i like it you'd be guessing or i'd be guessing um uh but i think so after like those two because those are pretty
Starting point is 00:55:26 spectacular i think this is probably three right what about the one against morgan riley that where he just ends his fucking career i don't remember the morgan riley one that got morgan riley played injured all year that year and after that mcdavid goal they went all right How about you sit for a month? Yes, it was against Michael Hutchinson. Matty, you can't show this, but the title is McDavid Torches Riley. He did. For a Goal of the Year candidate.
Starting point is 00:55:53 He vaporized him. That's brutal. Let's remember this moment. Oh, my good Lord. Oh, yeah. That's so stupid. Oh, yeah. That's so stupid.
Starting point is 00:56:04 What about the goal against the Blue Jackets? This one's better. Man, you know who was on the ice for that? Pierre Engvall. Where was he? I thought he was the defensive stalwart. No. This one's better than Spineagle.
Starting point is 00:56:17 That goal would have never happened. So Spineagle's four now? We're bumping it down? That goal would have never happened if Ryan Reeves was on the ice. I'm just saying. Oh, the look away. The look away is so dirty. It's so stupid.
Starting point is 00:56:29 Noted Alan Walsh client, William Lagason on the ice, I believe, for the Oilers. Wild Bill. Now we'll leave. Yeah, he's looking at him. It's so stupid. no and like he did uh go look at his comeback goal against the blue jackets jesse do you understand that doesn't make his top 10 spinny goal yeah if you gave me like i mean obviously we can't do this live on the show but if you gave me 10 minutes i could find 10 more impressive
Starting point is 00:56:54 goals than that for connor you don't think it's 10 it i mean maybe cracks the top 10 but it's around seven eight nine or ten dude he's stupid seven so ridiculous what is he stupid i like that uh seven's probably right we should get to maybe you should do that maybe we should do top 10 mcdavid goals and we just won't uh monetize it you could use all the footage i just worry that like he'll be burned at the stake afterwards for witchcraft like he's he's so ridiculous ryan reese could have done it if you need a nutritional foundation to your day jesse blake what do you recommend ag1 now uh one of those things that uh it's one of those things that gives you the full vitamin support that you need throughout the day a lot of people uh when they
Starting point is 00:57:36 take it they kind of they kind of go man it's so much easier than like fumbling around with pills or you know finding the right vitamins it's got it's got sort of everything in it and do you feel better after taking it 100 yeah it's it's so much better than you know like the the gummy vitamins like you'll get the multivitamin listen those things are so ridiculous they're fun but they don't really have the effect no no it's not i don't feel like it's not comparable ag1 is just so much better and heading into the holidays it turns you green it's got a science-driven formulation of vitamins probiotics and whole food sourced nutrients you might feel like the hulk but you won't look like it uh and here's the thing if a comprehensive solution is what you need
Starting point is 00:58:14 from your supplement routine then try ag1 and get a free one-year supply of vitamin d and five free ag1 travel packs with your first purchase go to drinkag1.com slash sdp that's drinkag1.com slash sdp check it out the underrated part of that is the vitamin d at this point of the year where the sun is going down so early in canada it's like 6 p.m and it's dark dark outside the vitamin d is really important for you uh i don't know if you saw the other ridiculous goal last night uh sean couturier scoring his first goal in 22 months backwards whoa pretty cool really really that's so encouraging yeah flyers fans got to be jacked about that like that's not a guy just getting back into the lineup right this is uh i mean i don't know if it's right to expect him to
Starting point is 00:59:01 be where he was but like that's it's still a great sign that elite talent is still there yes 100 and i mean i mean it sure would uh change my expectations for the flyers i think i might have had them i might have had them dead last in the metro i think we all did i think we all did i don't think that changes my no i think adam might have columbus lab i don't remember i might have had columbus lab i mean seven or eight but like there's 32 teams it's too much i mean i would tack on a few points if sean couturier returns to be in sean couturier i agree yeah it doesn't make them a non-basement dweller but um it makes it hard for them to win games now the canucks basically took a game off against the flyers because they had two big wins and rick talk
Starting point is 00:59:50 it's been on them i'll get to him he had a good press conference but i wanted to start with this video and jesse we can use this because it's cell phone video from dr evil gritty on twitter um dr evil gritty got it uh who was at the philadelphia game last night and gritty came down from the roof have you seen this no you haven't seen this no no i love so gritty rules by the way we love this of course he does um yeah so we i want you to see i want you to see this i want you to watch it oh wow and there's gritty this is right before the players take the ice if you've never seen gritty in person he's so big okay but are you seeing what i'm seeing he's he's freaking coming down no you're not seeing it jesse rewind please what did i miss so he's coming off
Starting point is 01:00:40 look behind him oh there's no one there nobody there now they are all across the parking lot at the phillies game oh oh like what but no it's sort of thin oh you guys are the same team as in the fucking World Series that plays in the city. Oh, I'm sorry. How many people play... Talking about. How many people live in Philadelphia?
Starting point is 01:01:03 Pajillion. So you couldn't sell that game out, eh? Oh, that's interesting. Was it not a sellout or was it just... The Phillies are in the World Series! Oh, no, sorry. No, they're not. I keep saying the World Series.
Starting point is 01:01:11 No, they're not. The NLCS. I mean, they're going to be. They're going to be because I like them over the Diamondbacks. They got the vibes. Yeah, oh, yeah. Bryce Harper is fucking unreal.
Starting point is 01:01:20 I'm at home watching that. In the Philadelphia... Game three of the Flyers? What are you talking about, Adam? Guys, I'm just saying. Should have sold it out. Shut up. Should have sold it out.
Starting point is 01:01:29 Imagine. The Jays are in the ALCS, and we're like, you know what? You know that the Leafs would sell out whether the Jays were in the ALCS or not. Is Danny Breer at risk of getting tired? Maybe. He can't put butts in seats. Nope. But, you know, the other thing that makes it so interesting, just like with the Leafs, is that it's right there.
Starting point is 01:01:50 So the parking lot would have been full of people, but they all would have been going a separate way. I wonder how many people walked across the street. Like, hey, if you're a Flyers fan, let us know if you have ever left one event to go across the street to the other. Or all three. Or all three. Could that happen? Yeah, on a Sunday, the Flyers, Eagles, and... You'd have Eagles at one.
Starting point is 01:02:11 Eagles at one. 100%. Maybe Flyers at four. And then the late game for... 7 o'clock, yeah. 8 o'clock. I guess it is possible. 100%.
Starting point is 01:02:20 You could have an afternoon Flyers game too and then have the baseball in between and then football at night because football sometimes doesn't start until 8. Yeah, they could be the Sunday night game. They could be 8.30, whatever you want to do it. All three could have happened. That'd be fun.
Starting point is 01:02:31 That's like a $500 day. Oh, more than that. Oh my God. Because you'd have to have the Phillies in like a playoff game. You'd also probably need to eat. No. At some point, you'd need to eat.
Starting point is 01:02:42 Well, you could go to Xfinity Live. It's right there. The Sixers could be not playing James Harden in a preseason game. Yeah, so he's, like, not showed up for stuff, eh? Yeah, he didn't show up to practice today. That guy sucks. Man, I don't know what he expects to get out of this.
Starting point is 01:02:58 I'm like, you're not, if this isn't 10 years ago, man, like, you're not leading the NBA in scoring anymore. Like, what do you expect here? I like basketball enough that I have teams I hate. Good. Yeah, true. And it's nothing against the city of Philadelphia, but also, lol. We have a low-key, really good rivalry with the Sixers.
Starting point is 01:03:19 raptors fans yeah yeah well i mean you play each other over and over again in the playoffs yeah uh the flyers also outshot vancouver 22 to 3 in the second period is that bad from what i hear it's not great now i want to talk about a disallowed goal because i want to know if this is where we're at and you guys can tell me what you think it was probably the linesman's fault anyway uh but jesse can you fast forward and this is a video to about five seconds or sorry four seconds in it's only a 10 second video okay and you're gonna be able to show this on the screen okay so how much time you want so you're you're about four seconds in four seconds okay so this is brock besser rock blue brock besser is already by the way past carter hart and then go forward
Starting point is 01:04:10 another couple seconds so connor garland's going to score here he's the guy behind that you can't see brock bester there right and you're going to see that connor garland at six seconds uh is pushing the puck in the net right with his stick keep going keep going keep going up against carter hart's pad this is such goalie interference and they call that goaltender interface look at I mean, is your argument that it isn't? I think I've seen lots of NHL goals go in and count. Nah, the dude's showing the goalie in the net. Look at the goalie.
Starting point is 01:04:44 Yeah, but he's pushing the puck. If he's leading with the puck, which is what he's doing. I need the angle on the other side, but also no. No, if you're pushing the puck and the goalie is behind the puck, you cannot push the goalie. No, no, but the puck is not behind the goalie, guys. The puck is on Garland's stick. And he's pushing.
Starting point is 01:05:04 I guess. I guess what. No, not kind of. Can you show me the other angle? Yeah. Like this angle doesn't work. Yeah. I can't see.
Starting point is 01:05:11 I need the angle of the puck on the stick. All right. Because I can't. I can't. Like you literally look it up. I'm gonna look it up. I'm gonna try to see if I can find it on X. Go to the.
Starting point is 01:05:20 No one's ever gonna call it. Go to the highlights. Probably see it in there. Okay. Hang on. This is making for an awful podcast. Yeah, it is. You know what?
Starting point is 01:05:29 Sorry, audio people. Finding the highlights and all that stuff My point is That should have counted It's bullshit I'm with Vancouver Canucks fans on that I can't have an opinion I cannot believe you
Starting point is 01:05:43 I mean from that angle Show this screenshot again Alright I'm going to find this other fucking angle Connor Garland is in the net His head and shoulders Are across the goal line I want Canucks fans to spam the shit out of you two because they know I'm right. This is what we've seen, Adam, based on the evidence presented.
Starting point is 01:06:08 You didn't see the highlights this morning? No, but Adam, you're like, can you believe this? Yeah. Yeah. It's bullshit. Based on what you've given me. I'm with you, Canucks fans. I'm with you.
Starting point is 01:06:17 No, but maybe there's another angle that we can watch and we'll agree with you. Based on this, where Conor Garland is literally in the net pushing Carter Hart with all of his strength into the goal, that should not be a goal. Maybe Carter Hart needs to get stronger. You haven't shown me anything that evidences the puck was on. All right, let me see, let me see. I think I may have found it.
Starting point is 01:06:39 Okay. Okay, let me just... I cannot wait for Adam to show us this, and we're like, you know what, you're right. Yeah, I'd love that. You know what? You nailed it. I live for the moment, I guess you could say, Adam's right.
Starting point is 01:06:51 All right, so here it is, here it is. Okay, so I'm going to just show you guys this, so you can at least see it. So you're gonna see the top angle here. You tell me what you think. Puck is bouncing. Okay, that angle's goalie interference. Yeah, but that's the same angle I just showed you. Hang on. I know. I know. Puck? Alright, there it is. Puck is in the crease. What are you talking about? That's goaltender interference? He slams into the goalie and the, like if the puck went in on the other side. Look. Let me see, let me see, let me see. Puck's right there.
Starting point is 01:07:18 It's on his stick. Oh, that's interesting. He kind of, he kind of shoved the goalie in. Did he kick it in? No, we didn't kick it in. He kind of shoved the goalie. Puck, stick. I don't know. He kind of body checked the goalie. No. I don't think you're allowed to body check the goalie.
Starting point is 01:07:32 Yeah, man. No. I think it's bullshit. That's not my game. That's goalie interference. Not my NHL. Goalie interference. Bullshit.
Starting point is 01:07:39 You know what? Any linesman would have got that call right. I bet. Because the goalie has to have the opportunity to make the save, right? He had an opportunity. Do some more leg days, Carter Hart. All right? All right?
Starting point is 01:07:51 You can't push the goalie so that he doesn't have the opportunity. I think that's the right call, right? I don't know. We're talking about goalies this whole thing. The story of the game should have been Thatcher Demko. Yes, he was spectacular. Let's lead with that. Well, amazing.
Starting point is 01:08:04 Everybody played awful except for Demko. When he's not barfing into his own mask, he can do good things. I did send you a video. Thatcher Demko was great, and Rick Tockett shouts him out. But I want you to play the first minute of Rick Tockett's press conference here because he doesn't mince words. We'll put it that way. Well, I mean, I can't even pick one guy who played well
Starting point is 01:08:26 other than Demko was unreal. There you go. He was great tonight, and the rest of the guys weren't. Oof. You obviously didn't like a moment in practice yesterday. Yeah. Bruce Boudreaux's gone, huh? Hold on.
Starting point is 01:08:41 Do you think the preparation or whatever went on between these two games manifested itself in how the team played tonight? Yeah, I don't know. Maybe. I mean, I didn't think we had a good practice before the 8-1 game against Edmonton. So I don't know with that.
Starting point is 01:08:53 I mean, we just got some guys, you know, they better pick it up. I mean, I saw a lot of, you know, I don't like to use the word soft, but I didn't see you guys competing at all. And that's alarming. Stop. But saying that.
Starting point is 01:09:11 Where have we heard this before? Soft? Where have we heard not competing before? Could it be the Vancouver Canucks? I'm almost positive. he said soft like within the first week he got there and it was like this big thing and it's like travis green said it bruce boudreaux said it rick talkett said it it's the only thing that hasn't changed is the majority of the players with the exception of bohorvat it's a regularly
Starting point is 01:09:38 inconsistent effort like there's a reason why every year we're like they should make the playoffs question talent yes yes and a very good goalie as jesse pointed out yeah and then you see games where they're incredible they have guys who on any given night can be all-world talents um but they're just not consistently and yeah i mean that probably matches another canadian team that wears blue but um it's it's just not there every game i i like the canucks this year because i think this man's gonna have them playing the defense that we want out of them to be a successful team i feel like the offense will always kind of get an opportunity to get going because they do have game breakers which a lot of teams don't have um and i think rick talk it's gonna get them to
Starting point is 01:10:25 play the defense that they need to be a playoff team i understand why they wanted a guy like this yeah um i understand why it's it's a shame because like bruce budro was the guy who had to pay for it And I don't really think that's fair, but this team needs a hard ass kind of, and he's, uh, he's going to tell it straight. You know, we're all talking about, oh, there's 82 games, you know, take it easy. But he's like, man, this is game three and they're playing like shit and they're practicing like shit. Let's not forget game one.
Starting point is 01:10:55 They outplay the Edmonton Oilers game two. They get outplayed like crazy and find a way to win. Those wins are important than game three. It kind of catches up with them and they get this effort versus the Flyers where their goal is the only one who shows up. so i don't know i think there's a lot of positives take away from the canucks in the first three games yeah oh i mean you beat the oilers twice i mean it's great you should be feeling great but but i think where talk it's saying is is like listen we should have beat up on the flyers
Starting point is 01:11:21 it's right i mean and it's also personal for him did he play for the flyers uh i feel like he played for a few teams it's not dissimilar from how the leafs first three games have gone exactly the same you can argue the canucks have actually been better because they probably outplayed their opponent in game one and the Leafs were kind of ho-hum. And then in game three, against an opponent they should have beat, it caught up with them, right?
Starting point is 01:11:48 After going 2-0. So, you know, similar start to the season for two perennially frustrating teams in different ways. Did you bring up those Talkit numbers? Talkit on DB, like the Pimms. The Pimms are crazy. The majority of his years were spent with the Flyers through 85 through 92 and then he finished his career again with the flyers in 99 through 2002
Starting point is 01:12:10 so yeah big history with that oh my god and the massive amount of pims every year 299 penalty minutes in 87 88 somebody must have sat down with him and like look listen rick we gotta back it down i mean i it's funny the 80s you could be a valuable player and put up 300 penalty minutes scored 31 goals was was babcock his coach in his final year i know you're going after 3 000 penalty minutes but i'm cutting you off holy shit yeah wait 2 972 am i reading there yeah plus 100 and no holy shit he had 471 penalty minutes in the playoffs yeah in 145 games that's crazy do you think that he values tough Holy shit.
Starting point is 01:12:57 How do you think he wants his team to play, guys? This guy's going to get JT Miller to play a good style of hockey. Oh, my God. And JT Miller had a good first two games against the Oilers. Yes, he did. Full, full respect. Oh, and he got a cup with Pittsburgh. Did Philly trade him to Pittsburgh so he can go win a cup?
Starting point is 01:13:13 I think so. Oh, it looks like it. Have fans ever forgiven the first one? Well, back then, GMs were smarter and didn't care that they were trading within interdivision. Wow. Holy cow. those numbers don't even look real no they don't look at the fucking 80s that's a long career too that's a good long career wait the 299 season was only 65 games
Starting point is 01:13:37 yeah holy shit played played in parts of three decades rick talk it that's crazy yeah um career hiring goals 48 even almost a 50 goal scorer in 92 even his final season he only played 14 games he still had 28 penalty minutes. Wow. They're probably like, Rick, you're a liability. Like, we can't put you on the ice. Yeah, and we're done.
Starting point is 01:14:00 You get four minutes of penalty every game. Like, we can't. Look at that, 28 to 14. Hey, only a minus two because he was barely on the ice. That's true. You can't get a minus two when you don't kill penalties.
Starting point is 01:14:11 All right, hey, last night, Jesse, I know you know this one. There was another record set. It had to do with K.O. Makar, and it was what? No, that's Steve. Steve knows that. Do you know that one?
Starting point is 01:14:21 Yes. He is the fastest defenseman to 250 career NHL points ever, passing Bobby Orr. Now, Cale McCarr did it in 241 games. Yes. How many games did it take Bobby Orr? I think 247. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:14:38 So he didn't just beat him by one. He beat him by like six or seven games. Man, oh, man. That's crazy. His Orr had like a, I don't know if you can call it slow start to his career, But like the beginning of his career does not look like his prime. No. So like.
Starting point is 01:14:55 So he sucks. This is probably the last time McCarr passes Bobby Orr for a while when it comes to those numbers. Because like he was scoring like 120 points a season. It was stupid. Well, yeah. Ryan Reeves could have done that. You're right. While pirouetting.
Starting point is 01:15:11 He will. I don't think Ryan Reeves could pirouette get back up, by the way. I'm not sure if that's possible. You're never getting over that. i can't imagine meeting such a funny one man imagine surely you can't debate they must be joking they were they have to be joking um macar will pass bobby orr's career totals yeah um because bobby orr didn't play that long but uh i mean that just shows you the kind of special player we're dealing with this is why i'll always yell from the rooftops about guys like mcdavid and
Starting point is 01:15:44 Dreisaitl and McCarr and what they're doing now and Jake Sanderson sorry and Jake Sanderson especially and Tim Stutzler right in front of our eyes imagine how good they'd be without linesman true right in front of our eyes um NHL players are making history yeah it's yeah you're watching like listen there's so many things the league does that's stupid um that I hate but in terms of talent it's never been close no it's never been close to what we have which is why it's always hilarious to me when we talk expansion and like like there i think it was was it damian cox that used to go on hockey night canada and say um you know the nhl was better when it had less teams uh because it doesn't it doesn't have the talent to support this many teams was the argument
Starting point is 01:16:30 and i always thought what a crock of shit like look at these players they're incredible bobby Well, then I tell you what, since we're talking about Bobby Orr, then let's dismiss his entire career. The league went from six teams to 12. 12 last time I checked. When he joined. Yes. The league, last time I checked, was 20 teams smaller,
Starting point is 01:16:54 which is what he wanted. But the talent level plummeted, basically. Cut in half. Yeah, cut in half because you doubled the number of teams, and Bobby Orr ate them alive. So did Phil Esposito. Steve, I don't think I've ever asked you this. You were a longtime resident of Oshawa, Ontario.
Starting point is 01:17:12 Yes, sir. Bobby Orr very famously played for the Oshawa Generals for four seasons. Did you ever see any cool Bobby Orr stuff when you're hanging around Oshawa? They have a mural. Are you making fun of me because I've brought the mural up a bunch of times?
Starting point is 01:17:26 No, I'm legitimately asking you if you have any fun Bobby Orr stuff stories from Oshawa. Well, there's a ton of Bruins fans in Oshawa. um and i think a lot of that is because of bobby orr probably also mark savard uh that makes sense yes who had uh an incredible side story that when they uh retired his number he brought his mom out and she fell oh she fell and he began his speech with i see you've all met my mother oh yes i thought i thought that was very fun and adorable um but no bobby orr is huge there there's a big mural um in kind of south oshawa um near that breakfast place that i took you to
Starting point is 01:18:06 berry hill food company it's one of my favorite places in durham there's like a picture of him and stuff it's it's him lindross and i think i want to say his name's red tilson he played like forever ago they they had several players honored on the general's jersey patch and it's those three um and there's like a oshawa i want to say it's the oshawa sports hall of fame and it's in the arena where the gens play oh nice so there's there's a bunch of like bobby or stuff and then like randomly oh man who's the goalie was it fred braithwaite like there's a bunch of uh uh it's just full of oh that guy oh that guy oh that guy guys who uh went on to have a good nhl career do they have uh any like sticks or like pads from bobby or sitting there uh jersey i can't i can't
Starting point is 01:18:56 remember specifically but yeah they have to yeah they have to yeah 100 like there's the old like old sweaters and stuff yeah yeah that's cool um land of bobby or oshawa uh elia sorokin recorded a shout out last night how many shots did he stop it's the islanders so 17 i was about to say 16 14 no way oh my god i think midway through the third period the arizona coyotes had seven shots. Oh, it was the Yotsu, eh? Yeah. It's a battle of two teams
Starting point is 01:19:27 that refuse to score. And it was a 1-0 win Barzal scored in the second period. That's it. It's Pokemon coming to life. It is. That was a real episode. They had a Kakuna
Starting point is 01:19:38 take on a Metapod. They just stood there. Harden. And then I Harden. And then I Harden. Harden. I felt bad for Vimalca because he deserved better.
Starting point is 01:19:49 He saved 33 of 34, but... I mean... That's the margin. Isn't that every night? Yeah. So many nights for that team. Yes. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:19:57 They should be scoring, though. Like, if there's anything they can do, they should be scoring. I'm sure they will. I'm sure they will. They should be playing Randy Carlisle hockey. Like, you have the talent to score more than you ought to. You have terrible defense, and you rely on your goalie. Yep.
Starting point is 01:20:13 Yep. Now, Marc-Andre Fleury made what may be his last start in Montreal, and I wanted to ask you guys this. is there a more beloved quebecois player that never played for either team in quebec in nhl history i because he got around his standing ovation last night okay hear me out patrice bergeron okay just i mean that look at game 82 last year where he got injured yes just because like i know he was a Bruin for his whole career but he's not like outright hated which he should be which he should be because he's a Bruin so the only guy who I think comes close just because of the bell curve
Starting point is 01:20:56 yeah is Bergeron but yeah probably Fleury I just loved seeing it was nice to see it was like it was a really warm moment they said he had dozens of friends and family in in the arena so I assume like he kind of knows this is the last one so they were responsible for the so that it wasn't Habs fans it was just his friends and family kind of give oh no that's what you're saying no no I'm not saying that uh no but so I assume like he kind of knows and you you go and you purchase the 20 tickets or whatever for for all your friends and family it's you kind of know it's the last time around um according to Andrew Berkshire the two leading expected goals players nerd uh uh for the Montreal Canadiens this year have been Caden Gooley and Kirby Dock oh both are
Starting point is 01:21:41 injured kirby doc is done for the season i couldn't believe that but before you got here jesse and i were talking i'm trying to think like there are guys who they get surgery in the offseason and they're done for the whole season yep but i'm trying to think of guys who have bowed out in the first five games who started the season healthy and the list is real short even and i remember eric carlson would have been pretty young but like his achilles injury happened in october and he was back by march yeah which is which is crazy and and his by the way his ankles still not the same i don't know well it affected yeah we we can get into that but but the regard regardless he did come back i feel like uh and i'm not saying doc should come back or whatever
Starting point is 01:22:27 but it's just such a like it was such a freak thing when you see the hit too i don't know where he does it like he gets in because he got hit into the bench uh i think just because of uh the size mismatch with tenorti um i think the initial impact there was a hyper extension oh and i mean it must have been a bad enough tear that obviously he's going to miss the whole season but he kept skating l and acl right it's it's absolutely brutal for a guy that just can't find a way to stay healthy and like has had this gone through this before it's just so unfortunate right well and it's you know montreal led the league in man games lost and they're already gonna get 79 more out of him yeah the only guys i can think of like ryan ellis played four games for the flyers
Starting point is 01:23:15 muzzin played four games for the yeah those are the two names we came up with right and uh in recent memory i can't think of anyone else like to this early in the season and he was playing well too like how many points do you have two two good in two games yeah and well the the stat is the expected goals for that he was leading the canadians with but and i think that's i mean i think that's relevant especially you needed that with the canadian well he looked good in preseason everybody was very um very surprised with how well he looked you know and he was supposed to be an important part of the lineup and arpa and and mark antoine they talked a lot about it on the podcast and now there's a lot of shuffling that's got to go on with the montreal canadians
Starting point is 01:23:54 lineup because they kind of had the four group set and they're gonna figure out who like who's gonna step up who's gonna take another step uh this season and now this just throws a giant wrinkle into everything it's really unfortunate for a team that's developing to have one of those guys who's 22 who needs to take another step to miss a whole year of hockey it sucks i wonder if they maybe look at getting someone i was gonna say someone unless someone steps into the role so what they've done the last couple years with doc and with new hook is they've taken guys that are you know higher upside but projects right guys that haven't worked out where they are do they find the next person who's like that and help people alleviate their salary issues because
Starting point is 01:24:33 remember they've got the ltir space with carry so could they could they help a team like i don't i'm just going to throw this out there i don't know if there's a fit or whatever but vancouver has has some cap issues pittsburgh has some cap issues can you take on a contract and get a project player on the on the notebook with mark antoine and arpan basu that that was one of the questions is like are the montreal canadians going to make another uh doc trade and one of the names i thought was very interesting to throw out there was quentin byfield out in la because that's a guy who if the ford group gets a little too too jam-packed there there's an opportunity to steal a steal a good prospect and um i know i know some people like uh like throwing
Starting point is 01:25:10 out uh elias petterson because his contract situation but that's not i don't think that's that's happening or anything like that but um yeah there's the montreal canadians are kind of always on the lookout for that because they're in such a rebuild so yeah if you got a prospect who might not be able to fit in the lineup watch out because they could be a canadian very soon i think byfield would cost a fortune he would cost crazy you're you're looking at uh like okay so i'm the kings and i'm looking at the habs uh who do i want you're gonna give me at least a first i think the conversation begins with a first in lane hudson well you'd be sent the idea is you're sending something to the kings so they can bolster for their playoff run right you know you're you're
Starting point is 01:25:45 trying to you they're they're taking and they just lost arvidsson so maybe josh anderson or something something like that yeah with the arvidsson thing it's probably not as likely now it's just a name yeah they're through a couple names it's really good you should go listen to the podcast and subscribe to it but um yeah so i don't know if that trade is there just a theory you know i wasn't thinking quite that big i was right a guy who you get for the year and yeah i mean thinking long term is smart i want to say new hook's been on the wing for them like maybe shifts the center yeah it's so bad would you take a retained like does if la is looking for depth and i'm talking trade deadline here i'm not talking right now they don't they're
Starting point is 01:26:22 gonna this could be an opportunity for byfield to work his way up the lineup too right for yes that's being gone yeah it's kind of if you're looking for that sort of depth i'm looking at the canadians and it's like you know at the trade deadline i think pearson and monahan ideally would be gone um at 50 retained because they're both on ufa deals you know is that a is la a team that's trying to bring on players like that to go up against Edmonton and Vegas because they've got to get out of the Pacific Division, and that is going to be really, really hard. And I'm not saying Quentin Byfield for those two.
Starting point is 01:26:54 Right. Like, everybody freaking relax. Obviously, there's going to be picks in everywhere. But I'm just trying to – if there was a deal to be had, who would they be interested in? Tanner Pearson's a very interesting name because where did he spend the majority of his career? Wasn't it Vancouver?
Starting point is 01:27:06 The Los Angeles Kings. Los Angeles Kings. Really? Yeah. He was the king for the first, like, six years of his career. Yes. Oh, I forgot about that. What was that trade?
Starting point is 01:27:14 I don't even remember how he got there. I can look it up in CapFriendly. He's been traded, it feels like, 40 times. Well, it's because Vancouver tried to trade him 40 times. Maybe that's why. They got him and signed him. No, but he just went from L.A. to Vancouver, I'm pretty sure. I forgot.
Starting point is 01:27:27 I want to say they won the cup and they used a first on him, even though it was his third year of draft eligibility because he was, like, the ultimate late bloomer. Remember that? Right. i got the uh i got the trades for you in november on november 14th 2018 the pittsburgh penguins acquired tanner pearson from los angeles kings in exchange for carl haglin and then the pens in 2019 traded eric goodbranson to uh acquired erica branson from the canucks in exchange for tanner
Starting point is 01:27:57 pearson straight up and then in 23 2023 this past september tanner pearson went to the montreal canadians in exchange for casey to smith well that happened like less than a month ago Yeah, you remember? That was like when training camps were opening. And that was their goal, was to drop Pearson's contract and Garland's contract. I think they're still working on Garland. That was one of the good trades that Benning made, the good Branson for Pearson. Like, I think he got better value.
Starting point is 01:28:21 Vancouver got a better player. They had to get out from under good Branson. Yeah. And then he was promptly signed to almost the exact same money by Columbus. I think it was the exact same amount of money. I think he's still at $4 million. He's done pretty well. Yeah, he's done great.
Starting point is 01:28:34 um just like don't get mad we're not saying quentin byfield is on the train no anything like that it was just imagine player like that theory he's probably not going to move from la at all because that doesn't make sense for them but a player like that is what montreal likes to i think it's cute that the both of you think everyone's going to be yelling at you i throw lane hudson oh absolutely that yeah it's funny you went crazy it's funny when you have a conversation on the show that's like unprompted like why did you do your research i'm like there's no possible way that i could have prepped for this particular conversation like i don't know everything why have it and why don't it is then shut up about it adam everything
Starting point is 01:29:14 and and adam shut up then and you know what's weird about it too is that it's like i can always tell the people who have who work in an industry where you have brainstorms versus the ones who don't brainstorm where you like get in a room and just throw shit or shit at the wall and go here's an idea oh that's pretty stupid but let's leave that one but you just throw it out there anyway because it what about and then even by the time you get to the end of the sentence you're like yeah i said it out loud and i don't believe it anymore but you know what it's like if you've never been to a brainstorm before if you haven't had one since high school that's how they work here's some here's 10 crazy ideas if one of them is good great you know how much stuff is on the
Starting point is 01:29:53 cutting room floor for lfr that drew has seen and no one else where i go hey what about no that's dumb drew delete it like that that's dumb no um now i want to ask you guys this how much i know this is like a big controversy and for somebody like myself who would never use an nhl app because the the there's so many other apps you can use did you guys ever use the nhl no i've never never used the nhl never downloaded so a lot of people are complaining about it uh and i and for those who don't get it um and and i'm i'm including myself in this and i guess you guys as well uh so we got three people who don't use they don't use the app i well i'm comparing it to what the nba app talk about it the nba app is going to be i don't know if you guys
Starting point is 01:30:38 have seen what they have i've heard whisper the nba app generated 1 billion video views this past season wow more than triple two years ago wow and so what they've decided to do is hey we might be on to something so they say it's going to deliver unique experiences through advanced personalization features enhanced live game viewing options whoa and expanded content offering so they're actually going to have shows that exist on it one of them's called coach's quarter hilarious no way it's actually called coach's corner but it's about like x's and o's but yeah one of the shows on the nba app is going to be called coach's corner here's the guy joel and beat he goes goes to the net there he jumps up he blocks the ball next to the other way he slam ducks ball
Starting point is 01:31:27 joel and beat yeah um the league plans to use a vertical style of social media interface not unlike tiktok or instagram reels uh for quote moments on the app throughout the year um basically uh they um they said we want to keep tabs uh on on fans and in terms of like making it fully immersive so uh whether it be a team that's your favorite or players that your favorite you follow uh or something that's more of a nuanced topic uh they want you to be able to follow it easily throughout the app uh there's another show called nba crunch time too that let me let me throw the can i throw the premise at you the nba crunch time premise give it to me the NBA's version of a whip-around show
Starting point is 01:32:11 will be back once again this season. Jaren Greedberg, who appeared on NBA TV and NBA on TNT, will lead the command for the show. It promises to be around for more than 50 episodes, and the whole idea is that it goes from game to game to game during intense moments. Where have we heard this before, you wonder? You ask.
Starting point is 01:32:31 Court surfing. Court surfing. That was court surfing on the score back in the day. yeah additionally the app plans to follow the league's first in-season tournament which is the race for the nba cup you'll get exclusive access and get this if you're a hockey fan you're gonna love this part you ready you know when you're trying to watch the game and you like can't the nba will allow you to stream it from their app some games anyway um use and so the idea is that you get to still watch the game even if you can't find the game yeah but what if um i just
Starting point is 01:33:07 want to steal it because it's a pain in the ass well like what why would you make it easy for me when you could just make it fucking impossible yep i don't understand the nba's business plan they need to start operating like a real league the national hockey league now if you want to be a part of it so so fans will be able to access nba league pass which is an nhl thing that used to exist, through the NBA app. According to the release, it will be an enhanced live game streaming experience, which will allow for betting and also for advanced stats
Starting point is 01:33:37 and easier navigation through broadcast and language options, too, because the NBA is watching in a bazillion different languages. Packages are available on NBA.com and the NBA app for $150 a year. Eight hundred live out-of-market games are available. And that means that if you are watching,
Starting point is 01:33:53 you know, if you want to watch your team and they're out-of-market, you can watch them. It sounds like not a lot of blackouts, either. Novel idea. Well, this is good news. If you're a hockey fan, this is good news. Why is that? Well, because hockey follows the NBA's lead, right?
Starting point is 01:34:10 So here's the NBA doing a good thing. I get anxious not when I don't hear advancements in hockey. I get anxious when I don't hear them in the NBA. So now that we've heard this, oh, good. It's like two years away. So we'll have this in two years. Hopefully. So that's good.
Starting point is 01:34:28 No, that's good. let the countdown begin two years ready to go for the 2025-26 season we will have a functional nhl app crazy huh that's pretty good i think it's cool uh so you know when people complain about the nhl app when you can't even find out what the score is that's what the nhl app is people can't find out what the score is or what the schedule is beyond this week like i know the nba app you can like watch 800 games i know we don't use it but like why would we of course why would we why Also, until the TV rights packages change, like in Canada,
Starting point is 01:35:02 it's two telecoms that own the team and they want you to subscribe to their cable offerings. Whereas I think in the States, if you've got local and regional broadcasts, they might be free over the air so the NBA can run it. Adam, you've got to stop. I'm going to get
Starting point is 01:35:17 fired. From what? Oh, I quit. Fuck. We're good. Let's do the press conference. Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer. Starting point is 01:36:22 Canadian New Vehicle Total Registrations for calendar year 2025 for the Cadillac definition of luxury. The Presser SDP. The Steve Dangle Press Conference. This didn't make your lineup, Adam, so I'll ask it. Idiot!
Starting point is 01:36:39 What did you guys think of the Pittsburgh trade? No, not that question. I didn't. It's okay. I'll ask that one next time. That is... I didn't. What did you say
Starting point is 01:36:48 when the trade happened. I texted this group chat and said, this is the most Kyle Dubas trade I've seen since he was in Toronto. Let me pull up the trade. He did play the hits. Oh, yeah. Let me get two undersized guys
Starting point is 01:37:01 that we can plug into the lineup for 20 games and they'll disappear into the night. I'll read the trade for anybody that didn't know. The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired Jack Rathbone and Carol Plastic. Jack Rathbone's 177 pounds. Carol Plastic is 154. In exchange for Mark Friedman and Ty Glover,
Starting point is 01:37:21 who were sent to the Vancouver Canucks. Mark Friedman played some NHL games. Ty Glover is 6'3". I think Kyle Cushman said he liked Ty Glover in the rookie tournament. Yes, he did. I saw that. And I trust Kyle Cushman. I mean, it's just, think of how much we would have talked about this trade
Starting point is 01:37:37 if you replaced one of those teams with the Leafs. Yep. Oh, yep. But we kind of have to, though, don't we? He's so good. No, I will say this. Kyle Dubas is so good at acquiring guys who will play 15 to 25 NHL games. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:37:54 I think he understands. I do give him credit for understanding depth. Like he did a way better job of it than Lou Lamorello ever did. Like way better. Way better. Probably. There's a bunch of guys and Patan and Malgan and all these other guys that came through. Did they do much?
Starting point is 01:38:13 Not really. But they weren't a drag on the team. And I have to give Dubas credit for that. He was always able to find guys. It's like, listen, we got to dress somebody at that position. All of our money's at the top end. Let's just dress somebody that's not going to hurt us. This to me looks like Vancouver maybe getting someone who can fill in for Tyler Myers,
Starting point is 01:38:33 who looks like he's playing his way out of the lineup pretty quickly. Ty Glover's a little bit of center depth. The Penguins get Rathbone, who I guess they like more than Friedman, question mark. and carl plastic i don't i don't know it always just when these trades happen corral maybe i'm reminded of how little data we have access to yeah like think about with the data available truly unless you're a reporter at the rookie tournament like kyle cushman was or watching it what data do you have on any of those guys you got your their ahl stats that's about it so how do you how does Kyle Dubas and his management group
Starting point is 01:39:14 go, I want Rathbone, and I want who's the other guy? Carell Plastic. Who's currently playing in Czechia. Oh, is he? No career NHL game, sixth round pick, never
Starting point is 01:39:30 been to North America. I want zero North America game. I want Plastic, and I want Jack Rathbone, who's legit. Skull and Bone is what I call him because he's scary with 150 something pounds oh never mind uh plastic has he played eight games for the abbotsford canucks yeah but now he's in chekia but now he's back in chekia but no i said no that was last year yeah i said
Starting point is 01:39:53 he's had no career and in north america games he has eight i have a question about that is it possible there was a contract slot that was opened up with that one yeah i think there is because they're at 40 typical kyle dubas team they're right at the top of contract sign the pittsburgh penguins have 49 of 50 contract slots used but is plastic signed to a deal no idea uh okay do you hear how okay this is a lot of yes yeah he is yes he is but does that count if he's not playing here a lot of nhl fans are gonna laugh at this epiphany i just had do you hear how boring this conversation is now that none of these teams are the leafs stop it's true well i think the leafs and pens what's interesting about the Leafs and Pens is they're
Starting point is 01:40:37 very similar in the sense that there's a lot of salary at the top, and Dubas has to nibble around the edges to find people to play. Yeah. What is Jack Big Daddy Bone? The Wrath of Bone. I don't like that, Nick. If this was the Leafs, you would have done a little bit more research on somebody like Jack Wrathbone.
Starting point is 01:40:52 I just shot the video already. Yeah, you would have went out and dug up some info. And it would have 80,000 views. Just because it's the Pens doesn't mean you should dismiss Jack Wrathbone. I'm not. It sounds like you are. No, I'm making fun of myself. For living and dying by, like, every Nick Patan trade. No, there's nothing wrong with that.
Starting point is 01:41:11 Dude, what is the point of this if we don't live and die by that? I love this shit. Are you kidding me? I will live and die by all this. I'm enjoying this. Six months where Mike Stevens made his whole identity, I like Michael Carcone. Well, there were entire seasons where he did it with Trevor Moore.
Starting point is 01:41:27 Yeah, and he was right. So what does, what is, I'm looking up Jack Rathbone's scouting report. Mobile defenseman. Let me get to the next question. has improved defensively uh he's got a lot of offensive capabilities that could carry him to the pros plays a smart up-tempo game uh and has great skating ability that's a kyle dubas guy lack of size could be a problem in his own zone also a kyle dubas thing playing with a big partner would help yeah you guys do not care about the information you are talking about next question
Starting point is 01:41:58 I hope he makes the flyers or wherever the fuck he was traded to. Pens fans, I'm sorry. You're going to get the wrath of Bono. Sorry, Pens fans. Okay. All right. All right. What are your guys' thoughts on Evgeny Malkin being left off of ESPN's top 100 players?
Starting point is 01:42:15 Here's your double Pens talk. This was fucking egregious. Like, of all time? Yeah. So, yesterday, ESPN released their top 100 players list of, like, current NHLers. What? Yeah. He's not in it?
Starting point is 01:42:28 he wasn't okay so it's wrong then he's not in that's what i think like eighth of the league he wasn't top 100 espn they fucked up that's someone just okay so like when i did the prospect pyramid every year i like miss a guy um i think they just missed him let me just tell you something i think they just missed the guy let me tell you let me tell you something i'm pissed yeah you know why i'm pissed because because i did jack rathbone's not on there no because i was i was convinced that the Pittsburgh Penguins were sort of a middle of the pack team. And here's what's going to happen. What? Malkin's going to
Starting point is 01:43:00 hear about that. He's going to take it personally. And he's going to take it out on the league. The last time this happened, remember when Sidney Crosby was out? And they're like, oh, what are the Penguins going to do? And he just, he went off. He went IM score and just What are we, ESPN, what are you doing?
Starting point is 01:43:17 Well, they're not Flyers fans. The mid-Trapolitan may not be for much longer. No. Malkin hears about this. It's over. um there was a couple a couple weird pens things that happened with the list uh sydney crosby was 23rd which is wrong what yeah it's it's like what do you do do did the person who made the i don't want to call out who is it i'm gonna i'll break up is it you it was the espn staff so nobody wanted to put their name on it the espn i assume the hockey staff over there like i'm not calling
Starting point is 01:43:48 them out or anything but they the list isn't an accurate representation of the 23 24 season sydney crosby is not the 23rd best player in the nhl who evgeny malkin is a top 50 player still i don't care if he's 37 he's still a top 50 and didn't make the top 100 he gets hurt a lot but like we're talking about when he's in the lineup who are the 22 players better than crosby um i have right now let me old man cross the other end of the list give me a second give me a second sure sure sure wow i'll read you i'll read you the players they have above uh like he's not the best anymore no obviously not but he's he's top 15 oh okay here go also they have an honorable mention section malkin did not even make oh my god okay they just forgot him yeah it's like
Starting point is 01:44:37 it's fucked up malkin didn't make the honorable mention section section guys who did adrian Kempe, Logan Cooley, Adam Fantilli, Carter Hage, Noah Dobson. Logan Cooley? Yeah. Logan Cooley hasn't done anything at the NHL level. No. Respectfully. Yeah, literally hasn't played. You've get him, Malkin, people.
Starting point is 01:44:56 Better than Malkin. Idiot. Troy Terry. Are you kidding me? So it went McDavid, McCarr, McKinnon, Hughes. Honestly, over Matthews? Right now, Austin Matthews
Starting point is 01:45:12 number five hughes is four now i disagree with it but you can i think there's a flip flop there i think you should be at five but whatever dry sidle not being in the top five is egregious dry cells at six agreed odd placing uh ranting in seven kucherov eight eichel nine a little high yeah okay i'm not sure about that you have to win one game one game the answer is malcolm you're are you taking fuck no i was gonna say crosby right i think i'd rather jack eichel and i really like jack eichel yeah this isn't besmirching jack eichel no yeah wow like we're talking about the best of the best like he's he's jack eichel is a point of game player right yeah which is great but pasta at 10 i'm taking past over eichel uh kachuk's 11 jason robertson 12
Starting point is 01:45:57 fox 13 hellebuck 14 first goalie on the list barkov 15 petterson 16 caprizov 17 a little low He's so underrated. Hedman, 18. Brady Kachuk, 19. Interesting. Mitch Marner, 20. Tim Stutzla, 21. It's hard for me to judge the wingers.
Starting point is 01:46:20 I'm just sort of looking at centers. It's kind of weird how Sidney Crosby is a center, and yet Tim Stutzla is ranked above him. So what do you mean? No, no. What I'm saying is I don't understand what it's based on. It's based on BS It's literally our old saying of BS
Starting point is 01:46:40 So who else we got Is that a guy in the Ducks Stutzla's 21 Sebastian Ajo's 22 Crosby 23 There's your 22 players who are better than Zuni Crosby We can reshuffle that list Like Jack Hughes
Starting point is 01:46:54 You could argue that'll happen as soon as this season Because I think he's going to be a monster And maybe they had that in mind Like they wanted this list to look good At the end of this season sure it's a previous rank 44 here's okay here's something really stupid here's what here's a here's a really stupid way to look at it yeah just look at flat out points i know flat out points and i'm gonna use marner or stutzler or whatever marner had 99 stutzler
Starting point is 01:47:24 had 90 last year crosby at 93 and he's a center and objectively i think the penguins were worse than the Sens last year. They were pretty bad. That's an interesting one. At least the vibes were bad. The Senators' vibes were good. If I could take either supporting staff, Jack Hughes supporting teammates, or Crosby's,
Starting point is 01:47:44 I would take Hughes. And I know Crosby has Malkin, but look at everybody else. Yeah. Wow. Some players who come in at the end of the list that are ranked above Evgeny Malkin, Ryan O'Reilly. Oh, they forgot.
Starting point is 01:47:59 Morgan Rielly. They forgot. Morgan Rielly. Yeah, they forgot. John Carlson now. Robert Thomas. No. Hold on.
Starting point is 01:48:10 They have Robert Thomas on that list? Yeah, Robert Thomas is there. They have Robert Thomas above. Wow, Robert Thomas is pretty great. He's pretty great. He's going to be great. It's probably somewhere in the 89. Also, why did he fall from 37 to 89?
Starting point is 01:48:24 That's why this is bizarre. He's 37? Oh, my gosh. Bedard's on the list. Brandon Montour is there Kadri fell a whole bunch from like all these players deserve their their due they're all great
Starting point is 01:48:37 we're talking about the best of the best I just wait what's line a list that has line a is a right winger 83 83 used to be 47 he's not playing on the wings why it's interesting yes but Brad made the list for the first time at 81 I've got cider at 78
Starting point is 01:48:53 that seems a little little low probably pick that up a little yeah somebody needs to look this over like this is poo it's bad shifley's at 72 same rank as last year jake genzel 71 and this is why i made the prospect people can tear it apart well no so that you can do tears oh yeah oh i like that yeah tears are a better way to rank it i think yeah like if if you take their groupings of players like i don't think maddie benears jonathan huberto jake genzel are a tier like yeah wait wait wait Jake Gensel by this list Jake Gensel is better than Evgeny
Starting point is 01:49:36 Malkin yeah well because Malkin was forgotten about very likely you hand it in you can't write about hockey you're not allowed sorry I would like to know how they came up with the list sometimes you forget there are a lot of good players in the NHL here here here but now you you want to reenact it you want to reenact it sure uh fucking and then they wrote a hundred names stop me to no you want me to tell you how they came up with the list yeah it says at the top of the list uh so yes people i like 50 broadcast let me read it we asked espn uh an espn panel of more than 50 broadcasters analysts reporters and editors to rate players based on how good they will be in the 23-24 season so it is a projection compared to their peers emphasis was placed on
Starting point is 01:50:25 their value for this upcoming season which is which explains why players that are currently out slash injured but expect to return might be lower than if they were completely healthy so that is the determination for the list there is a there's a methodology behind it is not just best it's a projection of who will be the best in 23 24 crosby is gonna go down as like he's he's a guy who is maybe one of the most overhyped players of all time and one of the most underrated players of all time crosby yeah what do you mean by overhyped what like the league smashed the Crosby button for the first like
Starting point is 01:51:10 9-10 years of his career and then forgot he existed I played hockey for 12-15 years and I never heard the word edge work once edge work Sidney Crosby was the first one well that's true
Starting point is 01:51:25 but Sidney Crosby basically brought that to the mainstream edge work it was that's when that's the guy that you were like i can't believe that he can do that in that small amount of space with his body that low i remember watching those those youtube videos when i was in high school yeah of those crazy a generation that grew on uh grew up on crosby brought you mcdavid and soon we're gonna have players who grew up on mcdavid which is scary and it's gonna be fucking frightening yeah it's mcdavid with a touch of
Starting point is 01:51:57 zegras oh my god yeah no it's it's gonna imagine zegras but with mcdavid speed if mcdavid won day decided to play hockey like a video game he just would like the michigan he'd have 40 michigans but i i feel like he just doesn't want to anyway crosby uh i i should i mean i guess he won those back-to-back cups obviously in 2016-17 but it was presented as oh isn't that cute it's and i'll never let anyone forget this i think this was espn as well uh espn for their prediction of the 2016 stanley cup final no one had the penguins it was unanimous sharks crosby has been one of the most disrespected people in the nhl for like nearly a decade he's gonna go down as one of the five best players to ever play in the
Starting point is 01:52:52 national hockey league and we still don't respect them no and it's 2023 and it's fucking insane i'm working on something and i asked a number of like well-respected broadcasters like who who are your who's your mount rushmore of all-time players i was shocked by the amount of people who had crosby on it nice that's very good to hear yeah like we're talking about a conversation that is like traditionally gretzky how lemieux or yeah richard and they were putting yeah richard made his way into some of the conversations first player ever to score frosby it's kind of a big deal yeah right yeah it's yeah no he's the greatest player of that of that generation like if you want to take the last like before uh i'd say pre-lockout generation yeah the the
Starting point is 01:53:39 first lockout and then to the next lockout um lockout to lockout i think no one was better than the lockout to lockout generation if you want to tear it that way it's crosby one like that's how i'm ranking it he's he's gonna he's gonna be a top 10 scorer of all time and he missed basically a year of his prime. The head injuries. He was having the craziest season of his entire career. Yep.
Starting point is 01:54:04 One day you'll get your flowers. Holy shit. Again, I think maybe they forgot. That can be an omission. There's no way. The Sidney Crosby thing, they legitimately ranked him 23. Jack Hughes at four. Matthew's going
Starting point is 01:54:20 to embarrass that number five ranking. Well, I hope he does. he's trying to he's trying to get up though he's saying leon say but leon's at six yeah you could argue leon should be two who was two mckinnon i think you could argue i i don't know i don't know how you i don't know you how you don't have dry saddle mccarr was two yeah you're right he's goofy fucking abs and oilers like what i this is what i i've made an effort over the last like half decade or so i've tried really hard to appreciate all-time greats now as they're playing i don't want to have to have nostalgia to look back kel mccarr is a like we're watching someone
Starting point is 01:55:04 who's like what five years into a hall of fame career 24 24 yeah he scored 250 points faster than but did you say bobby or you said bobby fucking or yeah that's an alien that's an alien from space who we should all fear and study and like jack hughes might finish third in heart trophy voting this season i just need to see it happen it's gonna be cool yeah you gotta do it yeah no the resume is not there yet i want to see it and i predict it's gonna happen devil's fan it's gonna be fun and there's another mutant in our midst i when you said third i'm like oh he could win it and then i went oh no conor mcdavid no he can't conor mcdavid's gonna get the heart trophy uh matthews mccarr mckinnon might finish second and then he was running right there with
Starting point is 01:55:47 them yeah and it's no disrespect to jack hughes like the only thing that would prevent mcdavid from winning a heart is an injury that's it an injury that would cause him to miss time because even mcdavid playing at like 90 i'm okay with that by the way 20 points we've talked about this before uh people are like well you want you want different winners every year no you don't if you got a player that's this good um winning is boring like greatness is boring tom brady winning you knew before the start of each year that they were at least going to be in the super bowl fucking boring max for stop and winning every fucking race this year except for one fucking boring but it's greatness you know this is what greatness is when you're in the moment
Starting point is 01:56:28 it's fucking boring magic verse bird was bad for the nba yeah well and this is my this is my my argument to everybody is like the nba uh was in such a terrible state at the end of the 70s terrible and uh and and it's funny because basically two teams won championships in the 80s the lakers and the celtics right and and people will tell try to tell me that that that is bad for the sport the nba went through unprecedented growth through the 80s no because of that rivalry they they look back at that and they go magic johnson and uh larry bird did irreparable damage to the sport of basketball. Right.
Starting point is 01:57:08 This is my point. This is my point. By the way, you know who was in the leadership group of that particular rise? I don't know. One Gary Bettman.
