tomorrow we get game
three.
Not tonight. I mean game four. Not game three.
Oh, yesterday. Well, good
start. Yeah, it's a great start.
Steve and I are both a little groggy this morning, so
I don't know. I'm bringing you, I'm bringing Steve
into this. So the problem with
taking the train down is I'm far more
relaxed, but I'm almost too relaxed.
Okay. I can never get into a deep
sleep on the train, so I'm just in this
state of
and so when I get off the train, I'm
bumping into walls and shit
at Union Station, and then
I get here, and I slowly
come out of my cocoon, and I'm fine. I don't know what
Adam's friggin' problem is. Adam, why are you groggy?
Oh, I just stayed up too late last night.
Oh, that's fair. Honestly, okay, so I've had
problems ever since I've been doing
the Western streams. I've been having problems
going to bed before midnight.
And then I'm getting up at 6.30 to get my daughter to school.
That was four weeks ago. I know.
I can't get back into the going to bed
earlier thing. Have you tried just going to
bed earlier?
that's the advice i always get that doesn't work i never give you that advice of the edmonton
series no i did the i did the third round no steve did no steve did you're right steve did
no you're right yep i still can't get out of the east coast i did on the no and i regret
the hell out of taking the the east coast on the on the first round but uh yeah and honestly
uh adam one round i know i can't i can't do it adam is lying what do you mean i get what do you
mean he's lying the reason he's tired is he stayed up all night probably went to bed at
maybe two because he wanted to know about the chris crider sweepstakes that oh yes at like
quarter after 10 eastern on a tuesday night which is still not done yet when people are
fired up for trade news 10 o'clock on a new tuesday it was timing i'm just gonna come out
and say it that could have waited yeah that could have waited especially chris crider yep
and especially because it's not done and especially because anaheim is on his no trade
list and especially because he hasn't waved yet yeah why is this a thing i don't i haven't heard
any reports on this i don't even know if they've asked him to wave yet dude it's definitely gonna
break the moment the show is up is is this the chris crider segment are we getting into it well
we could do it right now yeah sure we can we could talk about the stanley cup final a little later
but uh have we done a show since game three no we haven't oh edmonton died yeah well we'll talk
about it we'll talk about it thank you jesse for adjusting my headphone i appreciate it um yeah no
i think the uh um uh the crider thing's interesting because it it sounds like um exactly like the jake
truba situation yeah which sounds exactly like the barclay goodrow situation right which is you
i think he better wave is no trade is what you know what i'm hearing you know what you know what
here we go i didn't one guy didn't here we go i bet you're dying to know how i can make this
about the leafs and i'm gonna uh-huh the everyone is ripping on uh this city right now and why would
anyone sign there i'm not a new york rangers hater i think the league is a better place when
they do well why on earth would anybody sign with the new york rangers right now i'm gonna stop you
right there and say we said this exact same thing right before vegas won a cup no no no no no
screwing with people and no time in long-term deals and they're great punting them out the
door wait a minute you're okay i i see the point punting them out the door they got everything
against them pressure you don't like pressure well you don't want to sign in new york right
that's true you don't like the high taxes well you don't want to sign in new york uh you don't
like teams that don't honor your contract well then you don't want to sign in new york oh i want
to be on a winning team i have terrible news for you right now you don't want to sign in new york
what are they up and coming no oh okay well they are are they a vet team ready to take that next
step i actually next step for them is making the play i think they're in the playoffs again next
year okay high up no idea they went around they went to like things might turn around for them
but this is the third guy who's been a loyal soldier for them who they're fucking
they're completely screwing this person and it's a horrible look it was a horrible look when vegas
did it the only reason it's not a horrible look now is because they won we were all like vegas
is those guys are pieces of shit and then they won and we're like oh they won you know same with
the the you know to a different degree uh the panthers a little bit like uh oh man all those
guys do is break the rules all day long and try to hurt people and they keep winning games and
you're like well i guess suppose that's how you win then so vegas did it and we're like well
suppose that's how you win and what did the rangers do after they lost barclay goodrow one
of their most consistent playoff performers and jake truba who's their captain and chris
crider who honest to god if the rangers had a legends row like he'd be in the running
especially if he if he stayed they're brutal now they can get rid of his whole contract without
retaining which is what we kept saying as well if they're trading them they got to retain they
gotta retain they gotta retain anaheim can do this anaheim can do this yeah i understand why
the rangers are doing it don't get me wrong but if i'm a player i got no appetite for that yeah
but then you get to then you get to go you you go to new york and you're like damn now you can't
relate to this because downtowns don't have any don't hold anything for you but there are a lot
of people i've been to new york i know you've been to new york but i got ripped off you're not like
there are some people that love that metropolitan always alive feel where i don't think that
appeals to you personally and so no am i wrong so okay yeah no no nobody loves being in new york
especially if you're rich no no no no so now you're appealing to a very niche player at this
point oh they don't know they are on their way down they have a lot of question marks all management
does is screw their players whether you just got here or you've been here forever they have high
taxes they're not winning why are you going there because you like yet i think that's exactly what
so the main reason to sign with the new york rangers is yeah there's no other panarin shisterkin
there's no other good goalies also how about that good goalie b's a good goalie been a while
been a while panarin hard fall off you think he loves it there i'm going at them listen
we should scrutinize every team
the way the Leafs are scrutinized
why would you sign with the Rangers
Jesse why would you sign with the Rangers
I think the Chris Carter trade
as it's outlined right now is a fantastic
deal for the New York Rangers
the fact that they're going to get rid of the full contract
and get assets back
from Anaheim is a pretty good deal for them
and Anaheim on the other end if they're
if they believe that
this is a step forward year they're getting a pretty
good player who I think could have a good
bounce back year i don't think the rangers should be paying that contract because of how their
salary gap is structured but the anaheim ducks certainly can and if they're getting a good player
like that i think it's a good deal uh for them too i hope they don't pay too many assets for
the sake of ducks fans yes that makes no sense and if they do then the rangers just look even
better listen oh i understand this deal they're doing the right thing and this is chris crider's
job he's he's doing his job but chris drury's job what did i say you said chris cried sorry the
other chris battle of the chris's chris drury is doing a good job here and he's doing right by the
rangers and therefore he's doing right by the fans but there is a human element to this i don't
understand why a player would sign there to me like the beginning of your sentence is the beginning
and end of it he's doing his job and he's doing it well he's he has to honor as simple as that
He has to honor the crest of the front of the jersey
and not the guys on the back, unfortunately.
And his role right now is to clear that salary
for a player he doesn't think is going to be worth it.
And doing this deal and getting assets back
is pretty tidy business.
Yeah, I don't want anyone to be confused about my take.
If they're able to get rid of Chris Kreider
without having to pay any of his salary,
that's crazy.
I think people understand you're defending
the human side of it.
Yeah, I mean, jeez.
Because you're soft biatch, you know?
It's true.
It's true.
You know, I didn't think you needed to call me name.
Call me Stephen.
I gotta say, I like this deal as a shot in the dark for the Ducks,
who probably, I think people completely underrate them.
They were like third last in goals for this season.
But they still had 80 points, man.
And so you get five more wins, just five.
You're in playoff contention-ish.
You're right there.
Five or six wins, you're in the playoffs.
And I just wonder, or at least you're fighting for the wild card, whatever.
No, 96 is what you need.
So they're going to need a lot more.
But if you go get, because that was the cutoff, 96 points.
But you're challenging at the end, which is what they got to do to take a step forward.
The Ducks, Chris Kreider and Jake Truva have got to be kind of, you know, if you're Chris Kreider, like you got to be sort of excited about where the Ducks are going.
And what they need is what you do.
He scores.
They don't.
Yes, he used to score.
He used to score.
Yes.
And I scored this year.
Not a lot, but yeah,
he still got 22 goals,
which I think might lead to
still might be nothing.
He's going to get a lot more
opportunities.
You know, your PP one on that.
You're playing with a bunch of
young kids who are just excited
to be there.
Greg Cronin is not the coach
anymore.
Thank the Lord.
More than four assists.
You know, I don't know, man.
I if your cries like I don't
know if he's been asked yet,
but I feel like he probably
should be.
I mean, they've got palm trees.
You should be excited.
Yeah, but you know what?
they don't have what yeah they do have the ugliest jerseys besides the stars in the entire national
hockey league we saw them in person they're so ugly they're terrible i have a hard time defending
the uh the orange they're terrible yeah i hate the orange i hate the worst jerseys in the league
yeah there's a few teams that cheat by having a black jersey but like with the ducks it's honest
and that one looks cool well except which one is it the one with orange stripes or the one with
orange stripes or the one with orange stripes or the one with orange strip they have 40 different
jerseys they keep screwing with it yeah it's the zit jersey they just keep picking at it yeah they
just keep picking it pick a jersey and leave it i'll respect you more if you just leave it at
orange honestly i think they should have stuck with the mighty ducks korea um color scheme yes
Like, even if you're going to change the jerseys away from the cartoonish Mighty Ducks stuff and just go Ducks, I think you should have kept purple, green, and, like, the white.
Like, it was a beautiful color scheme.
I don't know why they had to go completely away from it and just go black and orange.
If Brian Burke had not won a cup there, we'd be looking at him like an absolute menace.
What did you do to that team?
First of all, you took Mighty out of their name.
Second of all, you just made them some generic team with black and a different colored accent.
And that's your entire identity.
But they won, so who cares?
They won, yeah.
And just for context, Crider's 22.
It's a little goals when you're coming off 52 and then 39 and then 36 goals.
Yes.
He needs to score a little bit more back to that 30-goal pace.
40-goal pace even.
Oh, my God.
I would love to see him get that.
I don't think players as good as him forget how to play hockey.
I think his body was broken, and if he recovers from that, he'll be on his way.
How much medical information do you think the Ducks would have?
because i would want to know like if he was coming to toronto we talked about we mused about that if
we could get two seasons ago chris crider yeah he'd be a great ad yeah he'd be incredible i wanted
him on i wanted the leafs to do a deal like this this i think this could work out um how do i how
like what kind of information are they going to give you there's not yet an abundance of evidence
pat verbeek knows what he's doing so i'm very curious to see how this works out man that cutter
deal looks better and better and better and better i told you on his side trades
that's the new sod for panarin just terrible awful trade it's he looked good man i'm telling
you the flyer set the rebuild back by that remember when he didn't do all that great
for like the first two weeks and flyers fans were like oh man no he looks real good he looks real
good man anaheim is increasingly i'm i'm i'm on i'm on board for this they're increasingly
uh an interesting team to follow going forward and i mean the rangers are always
there's conversation about in anaheim or at least when people talk about anaheim and i
you know there's very little like zach cavanaugh is a really good follow for the ducks but um
brett cavanaugh not not brett cavanaugh my god not my no he's not running about the duck no
somewhere keeping a calendar uh no i i random shout out my adam zach you know there are other
cavanaugh's anybody with cavanaugh and their last name is like yeah i hate that guy man
like yeah you know i got a dm from a guy i got a dm from a guy yesterday who just goes
uh don't worry dangle i hate him too but it's still weird his name is sam bennett oh no way
that's so funny spelled the same way funny same way and everything he's like oh man i hate him
too but it's just you gotta start going by samuel samuel yeah that's his that's his legal name
though it's sam bennett's legal name is samuel oh yeah so you can't but everybody calls him sam
you gotta differentiate somehow but if if you look at the draft combine stuff where he couldn't do a
pull-up to samuel bennett oh man okay so so so brett cavanaugh said something with zach cavanaugh
is a good fall for that i feel like when you're talking about when you're talking about the ducks
um the every every every single time you talk about the ducks it's just because it's only it's
been the story is okay well now they got lucas dostol so john gibson must be traded now and i
look at this has been traded for six years for six years and you know what i look at and i saw
it in an article literally last week again and i'm like okay i will be retired i really do they
have two of the yo john gibson had a great season last year he legitimately did why if you're the
ducks if you have figured out the most important position in hockey would you trade him well keep
him now now wait 6.4 million ain't so bad anymore the problem with his 6.4 million over the years
has been oh he's not stopping pucks now that he is like maybe a team of one no no no you don't do
that now you don't do that now you keep that because every game you're in it if you have two
goalies like dostal and gibson you're in it you can win any game with those two boston bruins
use that strategy to get the best record in the history of the national hockey league in the
regular season and they moved off of it a year before they had to yeah there's no winning goalies
and they just ran show for 82 games 100 i could see anaheim being one of the least scored against
teams next year now let me throw a reason at you for why they might move off of gibson i look at
lucas dostal's cap hit no current contract yeah rfa so what you have 30 million dollars who cares
wow you're not gonna they are not gonna eat up some of that and then you're gonna get crider
oh man you might only have 22 million left that what are you gonna do if you're the leafs that
gets you two players i don't all i'm saying all i'm saying is if you're gonna spend mitch is
easily worth 22 said everyone his agent is i gotta text from an agent saying that's one player
it's weird it says mitch marner is worth 22 million dollars and it's an oddly menacing
photo of my front door i don't understand that's well i guess he's worth 22 million dollars
my point is my point is i feel like uh the ducks need to keep the goaltenders together
and i actually think the same with the leafs that i've heard some some people in leafs twitter like
people are trying to get creative because the leafs have literally nothing to move like i don't
know what they're going to trade they can't apparently they can't sign any free agent they've
never signed a free agent ever it's never happened you know every year it does yep and just because
this year's pool isn't that good right there's a lot of guys you want and and again i keep saying
guys it's going to be a step back year it's going to be a step back year they're not going to trade
for anybody at the deadline it's a step back year can someone please adopt us what they keep doing
though is they'll go what else could could they move if we're getting creative here and one of
the names that that i've seen i think kevin pipetti brought it up was joseph wall and i was
like no listen i get why he's saying that i did that totally makes sense in terms of what has
value on your roster but to me goaltending is finally a strength here this is anthony stoller's
uh final year of his deal and he's a ufa you have a young goalie who's locked up to three more years
four more years yeah his contract doesn't kick in until next year so it's 3.66 and and that makes
super valuable but i would say more valuable to the league i wouldn't do that i would keep
stallers and wool whatever stallers wants yes and just because if you could figure that out
you got most of most of your problems solved in the worst case scenario stallers walks
yeah like and then yeah whereas if you trade wool worst case scenario is stallers walks
and then you're boned well his his if if you trade wool now stallers extension just went up
two million dollars a year yeah like if you're him why wouldn't you do that you'd be you'd just
be repeating a different version of what the Bruins did last year which is why utter failure
I think the Ducks don't do that with Gibson I think that they signed Ostal and they keep Gibson
and you keep both players in their happy place because here's what's going to happen and we saw
it with Stollers and Walls specifically in Toronto you get injured yep and you know we lost Stollers
for six weeks eight weeks something like that what was out for a chunk of time the Leafs had
to go to their and they didn't how many goalies did the Leafs use this year for and they didn't
have to rush them back and I think yes and with the Ducks I think that's what's so cool is John
Gibson's a vet he's been around a long time Dostal's a young guy he's playing he's probably
going to win a Vesna one day and I don't know man I'm fast I love what the Ducks have done
especially since Cronin's gone uh like I think that they are really and truly going to be a very
very interesting team to watch and i think i have i have them highly rated in terms of teams on the
rise i'm not saying they're gonna make the playoffs but i think they could do some serious damage and
i'm not talking about like oh they're gonna go get mitch marner i don't think it's likely that
mitch signs with a place that didn't make the playoffs i don't know i don't know right no i
mean that's that's that's what i think is i think he wants to play with the winner depends on his
motivations which are a little murky right now it might be just i want the highest paycheck
which could come from a place like anaheim yeah oh it will come from a place like anaheim it'll
be anaheim or san jose and when it reaches july 1st maybe he looks at that and that's like
two million more per season versus another place where he could potentially win and
you look at that and you say maybe i'll take that over seven years i'll have yeah can i tell you
why every time marner stuff comes up i'm like uh every christmas eve we used to go to my
onus house and every christmas eve she would make an absolute feast yeah of everything the the the
green soup the italian wedding soup except it's not like the crap you get never had that it's
don't get the stuff in a can oh okay thick swiss chard oh it's hearty makes you strong like freaking
Popeye, soul fish, you get the bacala, you get the shrimps, the spicy potatoes, everything.
And I used to skip lunch.
That was the only day where as a little kid, I would skip any meal.
Look at me.
I didn't skip a ton of meals in my life, but I would skip a meal because I know later on
we're eating good.
That's why I don't feel like talking about Marner on June 11th.
Right.
well we're eating good i know i still i still think it's worth bringing up uh oh absolutely
especially because in the context of we're talking about the ducks of course uh but i i do think it's
interesting dom decision actually put together a really interesting article about uh about mitch's
next deal and he said there's a lot of signs pointing to 13 million being a line in the sand
between a good deal and a bad deal for marner i'd argue that line should be closer to 12 and a half
million but just like the first contract negotiations it seems as though the marner's
camp are posturing for more than he's worth after factoring for aging and cap growth he said credit
where it's due marner camp uh is using all the leverage he has to get one of the nhl's richest
contracts and all the power to him if he gets it if marner's top priority is securing the bag above
all else the camp is doing a fantastic job negotiating through the media anchoring and
conditioning the public to a huge number that will likely make the quest successful that's the
smartest part of the quote it would not be shock he said or uh paint what's actually a fair quote
unquote discount to reframe the marner narrative meaning if you say throw all these numbers out
numbers out there and he signs for less then he's taking a discount if he signs for like it's
getting to the point where if he signs miko rant in his contract it's like oh he signed for less
right well it 12 and a half per one more short couple of sentences here it would not shock if
there was a bidding war july 1st they got marner's number to 13 and a half or even 14 uh it should be
noted too that 13 and a half is in line with what artemi panarin's percentage of cap hit was six
years ago so that's interesting he's gonna get more than austin he's gonna get what he wanted
in 2019 more than austin right i hope he does i think it's uh and i think anaheim or san jose or
some of these other small i'm sure chicago would do it in a heartbeat but the question becomes
you know when you're anaheim and this is why this crider deal starting to make more sense to me
if it happens for who for anaheim is okay yeah it's six and a half million it's three more years
he does have a no trade clause that was not three isn't it three more years no i think two oh it's
two okay two more years next year and then the year after oh okay yeah um all right so what do
we have to sell a free agent like that on other than we got a bunch of young guys and they're fun
having a good time and a couple of goalies yeah you gotta have guys that are sort of i mean you
have troop already but you gotta have guys and and you've got ragko gudas and you got alex
cologne and you got frank for toronto they have like a collection of old guys they're trying to
signal to the league, especially with that
Vetrano deal, hear ye,
hear ye, we will spend
money.
Why are the Ducks
signing a deferred salary contract?
When was the last time
they were at the cap? What was the reason
for that? We'll spend money.
What do you want?
What do you need? We got it. Not just now,
but later. Deferred money.
You want money now? We got you. You want money
later? We got you. And there's reports, I think, James
myrtle was saying that uh florida's apparently high on the marner camps list but we're not sure
how that would get done and clearly the florida panthers were campaigning to get them after the
leafs lost i mean that's all those press conferences we've said it time and again and it's a smart move
on their part it's like if kevin durant stunk my question would be what my question would be i don't
think marner stinks he doesn't stink dude i think i think my question will be these teams florida
Vegas, Dallas, those guys, if you don't perform in the playoffs,
it's maybe not the media pressure from the outside,
maybe not the same fan pressure from the outside,
but from the inside, those teams are traditionally far less forgiving
of people who don't perform in the playoffs.
And so, you know, I think there's a consideration there.
I think, you know, the reality is...
Go where no one cares. It's important.
But even so, Steve, if you don't perform well in the playoffs,
in vegas you are gone oh yeah oh yeah you're gone so go where winning doesn't matter right i don't
know i think sam bennett seems to have played mitch marner out of a potential florida contract
yeah they can't let him go they're just gonna give him anything now because it'd be too ridiculous
to let him walk and at that point there's kind of not enough money for marner so i feel like
the florida thing it made sense a couple weeks ago when they're eliminated it wasn't so sure
that Bennett would be back, but now
it seems like he has to be back, so there
isn't kind of money for him. Let me ask
a totally unfair question.
You have to win one hockey game
or you die.
Some sort of evil
monster from space kills you.
You want a guy... Gun to the earth.
Gun to the earth.
You want Andre Iguodala. Do you want a guy who got
a little over 100 points
in the regular season, or
do you want a guy who got you
like 51 in the regular season you want the 100 point guy on paper but then you look at the names
and you want sam bennett damn that's crazy because bennett has more goals in this run than marner has
ever gotten yes yes and we all know we know i don't know no i know but it's it's a fascinating
conversation because all i ever hear when it comes to replacing this player is well he's good
the argument is not that he's not good uh the argument is well when it matters he hasn't been
that is objectively, provably
true. And he's not the only one, but he's the one
who's out of contract. Yes, exactly.
And bringing him back for
a raise
is unjustified. It's also not
an option. It's also not,
we're not discussing that because it's never been on
the tape. It's not an option. He doesn't want to be here.
He has not had any desire
to return to Toronto, and I think
it's about, hey, where's the next spot for him?
I wonder why. I think if he ever,
like, listen, we have to be open to the possibility that
he does, and I think
if i think if if he does something has not gone the their camps away in free agency um i i do i
do feel like that i and i don't think they're gonna taylor hall this no but i mean is like
it will be like oh we're not getting the 14 million dollar deals do you want to sign 12
million here or you can sign 12 million and 12 and a half million whatever you want in toronto
you get to play with austin you know i i don't know like i think that's that's the only sort
of circumstance where that that changes because again until you get to july 1st and again i know
everybody's got cap space i know everybody wants this player it's not likely but i say i'm saying
that the only way he likely comes back is under that scenario he's the bell of the ball he's
gonna make oh no i'm oh yeah i'm acknowledging that oh yeah i'm just saying that's the i want
you to understand anybody who's in the run it back camp um it isn't gonna happen it's like
literally not going to happen sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time
to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because
here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use
my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and their way
around on that is like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hey
hang on a second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper
thing and the and the washer thing chemicals you gotta have the right chemicals see what i'm saying
that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task rabbit connects you
with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window
cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled
700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list
$15 off your first task at TaskRabbit.ca or on the TaskRabbit app using the promo code

You should download that. TaskRabbit.ca, code DANGLE. Now, the other team that I'm kind of
watching a little bit guys is is um los angeles ken holland was offered the islanders gm job
and then he was offered the la job and the reason he took the la job is because he wants a cup and
he probably wants to beat edmonton and uh and apparently he is you know they are a low-key
like sleeper for marner and for a whole bunch of other things they have a lot more to deal from in
terms of prospect capital young players and even some veteran guys marner byfield would be
psych devastating devastating yeah can you imagine a scenario where you've got anze kopitar on one
line taking defensive matchups and mitch doesn't have to on the next or he can but or or you need
a defensive matchup and you put kopitar and marner out there i think you need to take the burden
off of kopitar because like that's why you have to know maybe yeah they're getting old
They're both getting old.
Deneau's 32, man.
How old is Deneau?
Is Deneau really 32?
You're lying.
I'm not.
You are lying to me.
That guy has been in the league for 40 years.
Yeah, Phil Deneau is 32, February 24th, 1993.
He was a Blackhawk, and I couldn't even tell you what year.
Yeah.
Are you serious?
I'm serious.
He's getting old.
Well, I wonder if a guy like that.
I can't believe that.
Because the cap thing is a thing in L.A.
I wonder if Phil Deneau, Jonas Eagle sort of mentioned it,
But I wonder if Phil Deneau becomes available.
Do they move him and make space?
Because they probably need a little bit more scoring.
I mean, is it the most efficient contract you can have right now?
Deneau is a contract.
I mean, 5.5 million.
I mean, he only had eight goals last year.
I'm not saying it's bad or he's bad.
It just doesn't fit the Kings anymore.
I'm not sure it does.
And his first couple years there, he was a 21-22 goal scorer.
Yeah, that's how these contracts work.
it's it's funny like we with these contracts we just have wild recency bias you know it's
signed and people go it's a good deal it's a bad deal shoots the lights out first year of the deal
see last year the deal is a little longer than tooth he doesn't perform so well who see
it's i don't know there's a little something in the middle right right that's on if you sign
someone to term especially someone who at his time I guess would have been in his late 20s
if you sign someone to term the odds of them looking worth it at the end of their deal
I gotta tell you it's not good well and that's the problem with UFA signing and I have to say
for as far as free agent signings go John Tavares is just about one of the best ever in terms of
what he his production stayed pretty much he's within 10 points of his career average every year
I know the problem like 11 especially with the cap the way it was was I think impossible to live
up to he would have had to have his first season every season for that contract to truly be worth
it there's no he didn't perform up to 11 mil in his last couple years the first year he absolutely
did I'm the other six no no okay but and that's not even saying he's bad it's just the way the
league was structured back then and the way it worked out because of covid you have to be a top
five player in the league every year to be even and it wasn't to be worth 11 and it so it worked
out about as well as it could have and still not worth it right that's that's a ufa so i wonder
though and teams offered him more because there are rumors this morning that that i think it was
james actually james has just been dropping bombs but that that matt nyes and and uh um
and john tavaris's extensions could be done by next week yes content christmas give it to me
they've been too quiet yes they have i'm like please sir can i have a stephen lorenz extension
so you know when you're signing to what's interesting with tavaris is you know they did
the chris tanev deal chris tanev is signed if you don't know until he's 42 and he's gonna play
the whole thing yeah um could you do a six-year deal at four million or four and a half million
for tabaris i mean that would be insanely good i think it'd be good for both sides it's 74 points
and you could if you're him front load front load that deal in bonuses and then by the by year two
year three i don't know if he wants that anymore yeah he can't i don't think he's eligible for one
of the bonus laden not not the 35 plus i'm talking about just your signing bonus you know how they
oh signing so if he signs if he signs that and he gets the majority of that 24 million in the
first two years right then you then you can then you have a highly tradable contract if you're the
leafs or a highly let's ltir this contract and no one cares yeah sorry i thought you meant like
bonus yeah yeah no yeah the the bonus the signing bonus thing yeah make him make a salary of a
million dollars for the last five years of the deal just pay them all up front yeah 100 and i
look at that and i think okay if you get him a four right because you're you're spreading this
out you're you're bringing the av down four and a half less than five if you're able to do that
it's like the anti-marner his number keeps going down you've you've now put him in an area where
it's okay to have him as the third line center of course and i think that's the best case scenario
for the leafs and i think bringing a guy like that back i know it annoys people i know like
jeff o'neill for instance like hates the idea but here's a guy that actually wants to be here
and and you know i i the the you know since the florida series as you've mentioned earlier steve
all we have heard about is oh nobody wants to play there a bunch of this bunch of losers whatever
like the media sucks the fans the fans suck they just there's just 10 000 of them outside the
stadium every time they play a playoff game fans really suck here um i i i think bringing back
20,000 Panthers fans threw a beer last game?
20,000?
20,000.
Somebody, yeah.
Every fan in the building threw a beer.
Stop.
Somebody was like, oh, Panthers fans.
I'm like, stop it.
Come on.
No, that's how it works.
No, it's not.
That's how it works.
There's one bad actor and it's all of them.
John Tavares.
That's how it works.
I'm in the same camp of like, don't bring back John Tavares because I think you need
to change up the mix as much as possible.
And he's such an important piece in this lineup.
And running him as your 2C hasn't worked.
Yes.
seen the entire time he's been here it doesn't work i think you would you you're you're benefiting
um in your team construction by not bringing back mitch or john and just having a whole bunch of
different group of guys but the number is becoming so good yes that it only makes sense to do it and
i don't think him wanting to be a toronto maple leaf i'm leaving that outside of the decision
making on whether you should bring him back or not because like steve you want to play for
toronto maple leafs too doesn't mean they haven't offered doesn't mean you're going to be good as
4c you know and i feel like jt wanting to be there i'm like cool but you had so many chances
to get it done i don't care how badly you want to play here you should have won one of these series
but it makes too much sense for a four million dollar guy i mean that's 80 points yeah yeah
has the potential to score 40 still the next couple seasons that just makes too much sense
that you have to do it no matter how the last couple years well and if he's not core for john
He's just John.
Exactly.
And you have him, oh, hey, we got this Easton Cowan kid
we're going to throw on the third line.
It's not 4-4 at that number.
It's something different.
And that, to me, is going in the camp of changing the mix a little.
A $4 million player is not part of your core.
Exactly.
We're getting both.
At that point, you're getting both.
You're getting a change of mix and a guy who's not in the core four,
and you're bringing him back.
Yes.
So it's good at that number.
It makes total sense.
If he comes back.
4-5.
Anything above that, I'm starting to get a little antsy.
Well, if he comes back, it sounds like he's coming back for less than half,
potentially as close to a third.
Just because he wants to be here so bad.
It's ridiculous.
Like if Marchand's going to get eight,
and that's what they're saying in free agent, he's going to get eight,
and the Leafs are going to be in on that.
Marchand's going to get $8 million at 37.
Tavares would be worth six or seven.
I don't want JT at seven.
I don't either.
If he was purely going to the highest bidder,
he's absolutely worth that much, but it doesn't sound like he is.
No.
it's a ridiculous contract now tyler bertuzzi is a name that comes up for chicago blackhawks fans
i don't know how how real this is but chicago blackhawks fans want this man bought out i
haven't even done the bio calculator but that is a guy who nuts would have rather signed anywhere
else other than toronto but july 2nd happened the musical chairs stopped and tyler bertuzzi
became a toronto maple leaf on a one-year deal because um he had nowhere else to go and was
beloved here and not at first he was bad at first yeah and then and then became extraordinarily
popular he was really bad that full he was terrible he had like three goals in 40 games
or something but your hand was like a liability and had a shitty attitude i was like oh my god
remember that when he was sitting on the bench laughing yes this guy off my team and then oh
he's figuring it out and oh my holy shit he was a monster he was a monster in that boston series
too like he was great he neutralized marchand for the leaps in a way that i've never seen guy
a guy do because he just went right at him and i think um if that that kind of player did become
available there's a guy that actually wanted to stay and if he's bought out if that actually
happened if he was bought out you could get him on the cheap why why is that a thing i don't because
it didn't go well in chicago i don't it's not going well he's he's got three years left at here
i'm gonna buy it out now three years left at 5.5 like that's a lot of money have aspirations of
being good eventually right i yeah so the the you're gonna be saddled with a cap hit for one
two three four five six and then it probably continues beyond that like dude this sucks
it's 3.72 million next year 2.9 the year after 2.5 the year after 1.2 1.2 1.2 why are they doing
this you it makes more sense to trade him you're telling me dude chris crider is getting traded
i don't think that's the real thing that's i don't think it is i think if you i think what
they would likely do if they're going to trade him is they're trading and retaining
i like i could see i just don't think does this make sense oh no the answer is no okay well yeah
i don't think that the chicago blackhawks have enough established star players
take of the century i know uh for a guy like bertuzzi to do well i don't think he's a dry
he's not a play driver yeah it's a six-year buyout i'm just saying and how much per year
uh it varies 3.72 2.9 2.5 1.2 1.2 you'd rather just have a bad player on your team he's not
he's not no but i mean like a guy i don't like i'd rather have a player who i think is
underperforming just a warm body than paying the three point whatever whatever you know yeah it
just makes more sense to have tyler bertuzzi i think that i think that a guy like that would
be great for like the leafs need to find they're weak on the left they need to find guys on the
left they need to find players like the like the um the washington capitals found players would
you believe me if i told you he almost had a career here nice that's great he had a second
highest goal total and third highest sorry fourth highest point total that's crazy 23 i don't know
why people i don't know why people would want to buy it oh shit minus 39 okay god damn wow
holy shit but the point is was anyone worse you gotta find he was worse you gotta find project
players if you're the Leafs this is the position they put themselves in yeah you got to find guys
who are not it's not working out there could work out here and you know like going out and getting
like Matt Duchesne or like Ryan Donato or whatever it means Tavares is that it doesn't matter what
he's making he's now your 2c again you got to have somebody who can be 2c ahead of Tavares if
you're re-signing him he must be 3c remember uh the Tavares to the wing conversation whatever
happened to that whatever happened to that well because they they don't have enough centers it
just went away when they loaded up to have like a matthews marner tavaris line tavaris was the center
they would not put this guy on the wing no yeah so 3c seems like the destination
if they're ever going to move them off of two yeah it's crazy hey guys vacation this summer
traveling this summer maybe you're going away for work too like this is part of it
you don't want to pay roaming fees no roaming fees are for for people that don't know about
sailing i don't want to call you a name but you don't be if you don't know about sailing
then you don't know about how much money you could be saving on roaming fees with e-sims
yeah and you don't want to pay perishing fees or londoning fees either
roaming oh stop ah you know what all right i'll give it to him fine maddie's even giving him a
a clap for that sailing 160 countries eight regions around the world all you have to do
is download the app once or go to sailing.com slash dangle now the great thing about this
with sailing.com slash dangle uh or you download the sailing app is you get a nice little discount
which is sweet that's on the house don't worry about it we got you uh but also you don't have
to pay as much money if you travel and that is the best part because it's kind of crazy sometimes
roaming fees are so much that it's like hey um to go away for a week it cost me half my plane
ticket in cell phone fees and also it's nord vpn back so you know that your data is going to be
safe too in countries where maybe internet safety isn't quite up to the standard that we're used to
is that fair is that fair so check it out saly.com slash dangle or go to the uh well or just download
the sale yeah that's what it was yeah there you go one or the other you don't want to pay my
loaning fees uh listen to 32 thoughts this morning a little bit and there was a conversation about
and there's been a lot of conversations about Buffalo
and Bo Byram and J.J. Paterka's names keep coming up.
And what was interesting is Elliot had sort of been saying,
well, Buffalo's not going to trade J.J. Paterka.
And then he changed it this morning to,
well, they don't want to trade J.J. Paterka.
Oh, I know they don't want to.
I think they're trading J.J. Paterka, guys.
I really, really don't think they should.
If your options are J.J. Paterka doesn't report to training camp
and trading him for a piece of shit,
you don't let him report so a name an interesting team that was brought up that's going to be very
aggressive and has all their picks and a lot of cap room seattle kraken so and on a seattle
kraken who cannot score to the level they need to score please offer sheet him if i'm the sabers
please offer sheet him please please do it because guess what you're doing you're either
going to offer him so much that i just steal all your picks all of them or you make him do the
thing that we cannot get him to do and that's sign a contract oh you sign him to a contract
we have seven days to match it and guess what if we sign him you're a buffalo saber congrats
jimmy john and then if you know what jay jay stands for i don't actually no i don't know
take a guess jason john johan johan john jason oh all right there you go so john jason paturka
john jason paturka they couldn't decide both names are strong if they are and if he doesn't
show up to camp guess what you don't get that money i know i'm talking about an alamo's client
right now i don't care come see me how you will like yeah no but i'm saying all these things
because Paterka is so good.
You're an RFA.
RFAs in this league are kind of boned.
We're the Buffalo Sabres.
No one.
Oh, you don't like it here?
Get in line.
Get in line.
Nobody likes it here.
Jason John or John Jason.
Well, I think Buffalo's got to change their tune on bonusing.
They don't pay bonuses.
No, I don't.
If the Seattle Kraken sign them to a deal,
I get to match.
Josh Allen anything he wants he won't
pay he won't pay bonus structure
contracts in the NHL for some reason
it's such a toxic relationship like
ownership and the fans and the Sabres
it's so brutal so like I even if even if
the Sabre and the Sabres do have
appealing things happening when they're
winning of course it's a great place to
play but when's March like again if JJ
Paterka is not in a Sabres
uniform next year, I think it's a
disaster.
Or they win the trade, but
what are the friggin' odds of that?
Interesting. They have
to keep this player. Yeah, okay.
Bo Byram is an interesting one
because there's a puck-moving defenseman
that a lot of teams could use.
Now, he was turfed from the avalanche
because apparently he didn't fit the
mentality. You have
whatever. They won a cup and he was good
during the run, but you have
power and Darlene you'll live with O'Byron yeah so what does Buffalo need to get for a Bo Byron
what type of guy well it's interesting because I look at them up front and they don't look all
that good so you would think goal scoring they were one of the best offensive teams in the NHL
their problem is keeping the puck out of the net um maybe a defender for the right side instead
a right-hander which i mean who the hell is looking for defense and willing to give up a
right-handed defense for a left-handed defenseman i don't know like i think if you're a saber you're
looking for um some sort of version of alex tuck which is a solid go by the way oh my god who also
might go what are they fucking doing well he's out i mean he's they got to resign him right
so is he ufa no hey i'll pull it up i'm pulling up the same no he signed through next season
4.75 he's ufa after he could say he could sign an extension as soon as july 1st but apparently
he may not sign keep him and if you stink again uh you can trade him at the deadline if you
want um but like that's such a uh solid player established player and positive uh about joining
your organization if you can find a player out there like that for byram and maybe sprinkle in
some picks i think that's a good deal okay i'm excited for erasmus dalien's landing spot
you shut your face i can't wait for the sabers to vilify him too remember in early march when
there's the rumors that he walked into kevin adams's office and requested a trade and then
they had to do a whole media storm about how that didn't happen but they had the meeting but
wasn't that trade biz said that he wanted to get some clarity on where they were an organization
was going he left it and he was very happy you know those rumors don't usually circulate when
everything's going well uh what did you think the other day of um producer drew tweeted a list of
defensemen he would rather have than evan bouchard and rasmus doline was on the list
no oilers i don't i would have bouchard over dolly yeah i think they're like macar oh wow
Oh, I mean, McCarr and Quinn Hughes.
Darlene!
The list is a very short list.
Yeah, he's a great defenseman.
I got to pull this up.
I got to pull the here tap dance for me a little bit.
I'm going to pull this up.
He tweets so damn much.
I've said this before.
I don't care to talk about the Buffalo Sabres
as long as the guys who are running the Buffalo Sabres
are running the Buffalo Sabres.
You're bored with this.
No, it's not even boredom.
I just don't believe they know what they're doing.
So it's like, hey, the tire fire is still burning.
oh let's go let's go look at the flame ah the smoke's in the air like it's just the same thing
every time there's a young player he's good they might move on from because the team has sucked
for so long and they can't find a fit for him and he's gonna go somewhere else he's gonna be good
because he's a good young player okay drew defenseman i'd take over bouchard macar
quinn hughes warensky headman doleen shea theater
i you got a good argument with warrensky yeah he's an interesting one for sure yeah um bouchard's
in that warrensky camp headman like are we reputation alone i think you have to put headman
above yeah for the sake of i just i just got 25 though oh he's definitely a hall of like oh my
god i'm taking headman over bouchard it depends on the context like are we talking building a
franchise right now trying to win one game gun to the earth like yeah yeah yeah context of headman
so respect i'll put him ahead and then shea theodore no i want bouchard right now no
miro heiskanen on that list no charlie mcavoy on that list no adam fox on that list
adam fox did not have a good year no he did not i think at the moment you'd probably take
bouchard over fox for sure heiskanen's interesting that's it's an interesting conversation it is an
Interesting comments.
Drew is the king of, you're an idiot.
He does make some noise.
Darlene is rage bait.
I'll tell him that.
And he could have put him last, but he didn't.
Darlene is 100% rage bait.
You want Bouchard every day of the week.
Sneak Darlene in there and Shea Theodore.
But I think Darlene's in that tier.
It's just you have Bouchard ahead of him in that tier.
We'll never know until he's on a team that's relevant.
Yes.
Yeah, that's the thing.
Right?
jack eichel it's when you go back and you look at the jack eichel trade it's crazy that they
that vegas got him for what they got him for like it was it's not a good trade
it's like it was it it was talk it was crabs crabs and oh boy we're gonna do it now give me
a minute he's still on the sabers not doing well and and i and people were like uh you know talk
is i think isn't tuck from buffalo rochester rochester yeah so he was excited to be there
it's uh yeah i call let me just pull it up again it traded from the buffalo sabers with a
conditional third round pick in 2023 that was used to select matthew cataford uh to the vegas
golden knights for peyton krebs alex tuck and a conditional first round pick in 2022 that was
used to select noah ostland uh 16th overall and riley height who we've been through this is a
minnesota wild pick so now i have to go down and do the whole trade yeah you don't need to do that
i'm not doing that my point is my point is that um jack eichel was had for very little because of
the neck injury yes and you know i think in retrospect that is the trade and it was one of
the first things kevin adams did right it was within his first couple years um that is the
trade that wrecked the kevin adams era in buffalo dead on arrival how many times like imagine you
have eichel and tage thompson oh they did that nuts they did they had them oh i know just let
them get the damn neck surgery man you could conceivably have them both on team usa yeah and
didn't work on the sabers it's crazy yeah and people are like oh well eichel didn't have a
great playoff okay fine but the sabers haven't had a great playoff in 15 years uh with vegas this
year you see the one where he won the cup yeah that that was crazy he did well there uh another
team i'm looking out for in a in a if a jj peterka like player becomes truly available okay
name the team that finished one two three four five sixth last in goals four but only had a
negative 13 goal differential they have 13 goal differential they can't score last cannot score
but damn they can they can they don't let in a lot of goals either
see this is a reputation pick but that kind of sounds like minnesota calgary uh uh minnesota
they're like dead last minnesota is a little ahead of calgary but it was you're right jesse
that's the calgary flames no way and and so really yeah minnesota i remember dustin wolf
stood on his head for all season yes minnesota had three more goals than the flames so minnesota
might be in this too but calgary flames had 225 goals which is like sixth or seventh last but they
were one of the least you know every other team in them in their in their range right now in the
goals for range san jose sharks negative 105 goal differential predators negative 60 ducks negative
42 bruins negative 50 uh islanders negative 36 and above the flames in in terms of goals scored
the blackhawks negative 70 wild negative 11 canucks negative 17 flyers negative 48 and so
all calgary really needs to do let's be honest they just missed out on the playoffs yeah you
bring in two guys that's that can score 20 goals yeah and all of a sudden you're in the plus 20 to
25 range which puts you where the devils were or puts you where the st louis blues were or puts
you where the edmonton oilers were you're not quite going to be the edmonton oilers but we're
talking about just gold differential caroline hurricanes were plus 33 this is calgary has a
real opportunity here to just go get a couple of mid-range goal scores and make it happen and also
just age gracefully like yeah you need caudry and hubert oda to be well there's that but i'm talking
about a guy like matt coronado the aging up i love yeah connor zary that's what i mean go get
the two guys and let the let the other guys age up i think they should be all over marco rossi
that's an interesting one i don't know if they're into smaller i mean i don't know what craig
conroy's really into i don't know what the flames want either they couldn't find a use for sam
bennett well that was the coach coach didn't like him uh because the and and the owner really liked
the coach and the gm didn't like the coach and the players didn't like the coach and the green
grass grew all around all around and yeah yeah it's uh wow that's quite a bit interesting by
the way buffalo sabers 269 goals which is a full 40 more than the flames 289 allowed they scored
so many goals now i would be curious to know like the context of the goals like how many goals did
they score down three you know what i mean i don't have those stats readily available you know
no of course not but uh that man that's they're literally one of the best offensive teams in the
league how many how many goals were scored after the the trade deadline when they were well and
truly out of it great question that's always a key too right oh we went out to run late last season
yeah you throw that in the trash how many backup goalies did they face yeah how many third and
fourth goalies did you face how many like they got i think at least two dennis hildeby starts
you need out of the leaves you need to basically solve 200 and what was it where was it 289 goals
most playoff teams are in and around 230 240 so you got to cut 60 goals against
oh my god uka peka lukinen has to return to form and you're relying on lindy ruff
to connect with all these young guys and put this together i don't know man it's a it's a
it's a tall order in buffalo taller buffalo now the other guy's name that's out there guys is
james or james jason robertson i thought you were gonna say james reimer i'm like is that
james reimer is a ufa what are you talking about his name would be out there uh but no i'm talking
about jason robertson and there is there is more reports every day about jason robertson
potentially not being back with Dallas next year because maybe Mitch
Marner,
maybe that's an option.
Maybe they want Mitch Marner.
Cause I'm not,
listen,
you guys getting ranting and,
and Marner would be legitimately very funny.
Jim Nill already wins GM of the year,
basically.
But they'd also be building their team the same way the Leafs did.
All right,
we're going to build how all contenders build up the right wing.
jason robertson though is a a really interesting guy this is a 40 goal scoring guy this is a guy
that probably could get you some good prospects or picks so refill some of the picks that you
gave up for rantanen uh-huh allows you to sign maverick bork without having them stolen yeah
from you it is interesting i mean if you're dallas i don't know where he goes i don't know
like there there'd be a lineup of teams that would want him but you're gonna need a i mean
dallas there's it's interesting in normal circumstances james jason robertson should
be a king's ransom but if you're trying to move him before july 1st so you can sign a guy like
marner well then all of a sudden maybe the price is down a little bit because you want to get the
deal done so you can get marner and let's look at the complexion of the league okay uh the lightning
make the cup final three years in a row and they won the president's trophy the year before that
mm-hmm the panthers were one of the teams that kept running into the lightning and they decided
enough we are changing our dna legitimately and it wasn't just okay we're trading huberto for
kachuk and wieger and there's unique circumstances there and you can't hope to replicate that yada
yada yada they became bastards absolute bastards they found themselves in the eastern conference
and specifically in the Atlantic division as also Rams.
They found themselves like, okay,
if you're the second best team in the East, even does it matter?
If you're always going to finish second, it doesn't matter.
It does not matter. Right?
So I think there's teams in the East right now.
Carolina should be one of them.
The Leafs are definitely one of them going. We're good.
We're very good.
even we're not good enough we stay this way the only way we improve is by pure luck we got to do
something out west i mean la is an enormous candidate you lose four straight to the oilers
like and you got a new general manager who yeah is motivated i wonder about dallas who is clearly
legitimately a very
very good team
undeniably top 10
I think in most conversations
top 5
maybe even top 3
you're an also ran
you keep running
into the Oilers
and they keep patting you on your supple bottom
what are you
going to do about it
do you run it back with the same crew
Jason Robertson
will be by the way a ufa he makes 7.75 million he will be an rfa excuse me and then a ufa two
seasons from now and i wonder is okay let me that's a really interesting future contract if
robertson who i had 35 goals last year any team would want that um and an injury that hampered
his playoff yeah ended strong he has no trade protection nothing you can trade it anywhere
if dallas's thing is we need more puck movement on the back end does a trade with buffalo
for bo byron make sense plus plus plus i feel like the dallas stars are doing the right thing
if they're moving on from jason robertson because i think they are smart in their team building
strategy and because like as you outlined jason robertson is due for a new contract they're gonna
have to pay him a lot of money and there's not enough cap space available for them to do that
like they're up against the cap right now i think they only have like four million dollars available
to them currently and they still need to fill out their roster and that's another what like what are
we expecting him to get nine so he's gonna get some sort of raise on this deal and if you don't
think like he's gonna be this high-end performer who's one of the best in the league like he's not
worth that contract you're better off just spreading that money around and bo byram's
interesting but i feel like they would just take the prospect capital and the free money and use
that to just spread out through their roster i feel like they're too smart to sign a guy like
mitch marner because then you're just building the lease where you got a bunch of high-end talent
stacked up on the right to a bunch of cap and then what else you can do the rest of your lineup
you're signing marner to be if like dallas you're signing him to be your second line right winger
right wing yeah like that's that's also a thing with william kneelander is like okay he's making
11 and a half he performed extremely well he was on their second line yeah so you're building the
Leafs all exactly they're a wonkily weirdly built uh team you saying Jason Robertson to Buffalo
oh did that that scratched the itch did it in my brain I just thought I listen I have no
I have nothing on this but I'm just asking like that makes a lot of sense Buffalo needs talent
and doesn't help their player with no goals against issue but no but if you're scoring more
that's good if yeah your identity is you score a lot we like maybe that's it Byram and for all
of Buffalo's flaws they have a ton of picks and a ton of prospects Byram and a combination of those
guys for Jason Robertson oh you scratch the itch Adam you like that you scratch the itch I like
that a lot that's real interesting now the one problem I would say there that doesn't really
fix anything is the problem for Dallas is their right side I believe Byram's played a bunch of
right but he's a lefty yeah but I think he's a better option than say Matt Dumba of course well
and he's getting all playoffs uh after he came back I think was on the right side well and they're
gonna need they're gonna need to drop a Dumbo or Labushkin I don't know if Dumba's up but Labushkin
or something like that they're gonna have to figure out a better way to spend both those guys
are still signed buchelow buchelow maybe he goes back to buffalo he was there before absolutely
does he have any trade protection oh adam you're cooking with gas we got to get a little fun oh
you're cooking with gas i like it robertson is the perfect trade candidate like i feel like so
many teams are after just exactly what he is and what he can provide and dallas right now doesn't
need him and his next contract yeah they're a good team and they can fill out this team without him
well it makes sense Adam
Wilde
it would be interesting and what
a get it would be for Buffalo and
if you have to move on for Paterka because he won't
sign well there's your there's your replacement
you do not
just feeling like maybe
or talk or whoever else right
you know what I'd be doing all summer if I was
Kevin Adams Alan I'm so
sorry I'd be hanging up on Alan
I want to get traded oh you
dude that's terrible oh you're an rfa and it's the nhl
i'm not doing nothing you want sign here or frig off right right okay oh you can't frig off you're
an rfa anyway here's your sabers uniform we changed your number too just to screw with you
oh look at this somebody at sdpn wrote a book oh adam that's that's old news though isn't it
yeah julian mckenzie what black aces essential stories from hockey's black trailblazers by
julian mckenzie it is out this fall includes conversations from jerome aginla grant fuhrer
sarah nurse pk subban george larock anson carter blake bolden and more and he talks to hall of
gold medalists world champions stanley cup heroes uh competing sorry completing his modern portrait
uh of kind of black hockey players and black hockey history and i think this is a book that's
long overdue they let someone else at sdpn write a book they did i don't get it they did yeah so
look out for black aces essential stories from hockey trailblazers by julian mckenzie guy that
we know and love uh coming out this actually it's it's you can pre-order it now it's actually out
february 3rd 2026 right before the olympics i've already pre-ordered it you should too
another team that has emerged in the there's two teams that other teams that have potentially
emerged in the marner sweepstakes columbus and new jersey how do you think mitch marner would
react to the idea of playing for shelton keith again well because i don't think they didn't
like each other can i ask a shitty question yeah what do you think would make him happy
mitch yeah i have no idea i don't know i don't know i think he wants to win
so i would think new jersey would be the better pick but columbus got close
the playoffs but you know babcock benched him once and keith also like he demoted him a couple
times and so you think he needs a total fresh start away from people that there might be is the
NHL expanding to 33 teams next year that might be a fit it's gonna make them happy well I don't
know that Steve but I'm just trying to say what do you think of the fit give me the fit um
I mean okay they would be regular season gods they I mean the devils go out and get Mitch
they probably won a president's trophy honestly him and jack hughes oh my god yeah no that would
be unbelievable the problem i have trouble getting around is there have been times where the devils
were soft really really soft now i think people have them all wrong and i was saying this after
the trade deadline they beefed their blue line up and their problem against carolina is only half of
them played yeah they were a lot of injuries the devils and they have some guys to sign so that
that situation gets a little wonky but i think the devils with a fully healthy decor are a nasty
piece of work i wonder if the devils look at you know the leaf fans are looking at man if we just
beat florida that fourth game you know you go against carolina and blah blah blah i wonder if
the devils look at that and go shit like all of our guys were out if we had beaten carolina there's
a path to the finals no they're not a bad team they are not a bad team they what happened to
them is very obvious their best uh forward got hurt their best defender got hurt and then some
more guys got hurt i don't know like at a certain point what are you supposed to do
that's do you think you can be carolina i give them a pass this year do you think you can beat
carolina well yeah i think it's gonna be a tight series okay do you think you can beat carolina
with half your roster probably not uh no i don't could the panthers do that oh okay uh we're gonna
take out your top six and uh replace it with charlotte checkers here's jesse pool yarvey on
PK or PK and power play one no it'd be hard it's the NHL I'm I'm bullish on the Devils
with or without what do you think about that fit there with New Jersey or Columbus because
Columbus was obviously real hot on Marner last time I think the Devils have a space on the right
side for Mitch Marner like no offense to Stefan Nason but like they can move him down and Mitch
would fit perfectly in that lineup he'd probably played with he sure do you think he would take
one or oh yeah i assume you'd have him on that on that second line it'd be look really good and
mitch he sure pk1 you're not scoring yeah if you if you keep the hughes and meyer combination
together on the first pair on the first line and then you go he sure marner and you keep nason on
or you move nason down you also got andre palat which has looking like the best contract no it's
not more years that's six million dollars there's a guy i'd love on the leafs just for the playoffs
wow i mean time catches up with everyone i know yeah that guy like blake coleman in calgary same
thing he's putting in good years yeah but if you're if you're not making the playoffs with
blake coleman why do you have them no you got a lot lord at two years too late yeah a lot oh my
god well over a hundred playoff games and he hasn't played more than 10 and how long you know
i think no marner fits in new jersey i wonder about their uh their cap structure like they
only have 12 million dollars in projected space right now according to puckpedia which uh isn't
a lot because they still have some guys to re-sign so i wonder how would they get it done
at a number that marner would want so i think there would be some maneuvering with this lineup
in order to get marner because like right now that's not one of the teams that jumps out to
me as a fit because no they need snarl the teams that we're going out with are like looking at like
who could marner sign with they have a ton of cash space they need something on the right side new
jersey doesn't jump out to me you don't necessarily lack what martyr brings though you know what i
mean like you not everyone has players who can do what he does you do though so you got to go out
and get bastards remember when max patch already uh turned jack hughes into a friggin pancake
what happened right if that was the panthers it would have been the rest of the game
you you wouldn't remember the score you wouldn't care who won the rest of the game would be someone
would a john scott phil kessel like martyr the next shift or matthews or nylander or there would
have been tomahawk chops and beating the shit no the devils are they're soft yeah they're soft
they got if they get stronger i'm telling you that team is going places i think they just need
more tinkering around the edges of their lineup i think the core is kind of really good and set
right yeah okay yeah interesting interesting yeah they'd probably have to trade off the roster
significantly if they're bringing a guy like marner in with that yeah with the contract
well it's that comes from devil's um devil's media i'm just so you know i'm not pulling it
out of nowhere and like the honest answer is like 32 teams can use a player like mitch marner
no like that's that's how it actually works he's a very talented player he can play on the first
line of any team like 32 teams can use them you can find a fit but like do they have the cast
space and will they go and get them right i don't think the devils are amongst those so uh uh another
name that keeps popping up brad marchand and i want to just add i just want to flat out ask the
question it's a fit for 32 teams fit for 32 teams boston he's 37 yeah and the goal here and he's
open about it and no one blames him like if if mitch marter goes and maximizes the bag everybody's
gonna be like money grubbing if brad marchand does it people are like well he did take a
a discount his entire career he has never cashed in on being brad marchand so now he's going to
ever and it looks like it's going to be somewhere in the neighborhood of three years 24 million
that's that's what we think it's a crazy amount you better be already an uber cup contender
the leafs there are a lot of leaf fans want this guy jesse steve would you be comfortable
signing brad marchand to three years at eight million per how how yeah i don't understand how
they can do it yeah like okay the leafs do have a lot of space and people are going to yell and
scream well that's how yeah okay you have a lot of space you also have a lot of holes
like and expensive ones yeah but he's he's left side help is he not first line left side help
next to matthews yes so he and he fills a pk void he makes sense in in some regards absolutely
you have to replace your second line center which is really difficult and that's going to cost a lot
of money okay then you got to sign matthew nice well they're doing that they're doing that but
it's going to cost a lot of money remember last summer i was like okay i don't think anyone's
realizing the problem on the horizon here number one they finished third in their division with a
69 goal scorer what if he scores less than 69 wow he scored 30 less than that actually
um or maybe even more less than that um it was a big problem but the other problem was
they at the beginning of last year had an almost identical forward group to the year before
minus tyler bertuzzi and it cost more money neilander got his gigantic freaking raise
matthew's got a substantial raise domi got a substantial raise uh bertuzzi wasn't there
well domi went from three to three seven five oh yeah yeah it wasn't substantial you're right
but he did get a raise yeah right the problem was you were coming back with the same thing
in fact less than the same thing for more that was the problem
you have to come back either looking completely different or more efficient
and marshan at eight million isn't more efficient now very important
the leafs culture stinks and there is no bigger does it stay culture player yes it stinks yeah
Okay.
What other team is talking about changing their DNA?
Lots of teams.
And I think the reason that we talk about it more is because, you know,
it's not the real NHL here.
People care.
But their problems are we need to hit more or we need to score more.
Dallas wants to change their DNA.
Trading a 25-year-old 40 goal scorer, that's a DNA shift.
Well, we got to score more.
We got to keep pucks out of our net.
We got to get a little tougher.
The Leafs' DNA restructuring is you're choking bottle merchants.
that's their problem who is the complete antithesis of that Bradley Marchand
if he becomes a leaf I'm calling him Bradley
oh it's an interesting prospect it's just the it it reeks of early 2000s leafs
like oh man well those teams at least went to the second and third round I know I know oh man
wow that's i know it would be killer but like oh man can you believe we got the dregs of owen
nolan and the dregs of ron francis literally the last 12 regular season games of his career and
we went out we got phil housley and we got the ghost of doug gilmore brian leach
who was the one that got away the one they got him they got him for two years i know you know
what he did in the second year he didn't play a single game because of the lockout son of a gun
Listen, I won't lie to you.
It is somewhat tempting.
But at $8 million.
Jesse, what do you think?
He's playing so well.
Is that $8 million worth it,
especially with the cap exploding over the next couple years?
Yeah, so I'm just on Puck Media right now.
I'm just building the roster.
We're getting an emphatic head nod from Justin Fisher.
He says worth it.
I want Marchand to teach Nize his tricks.
That's all I want to say.
That's worth it to me alone.
Teach Nize how to do this.
But anyway, Jesse, go ahead.
This is the Leafs roster, Matty, if you want to bring it up.
They have $5.2 million left.
This is their team with Matt Nyes at $8 million.
Okay, well, he's not making that.
What did you want it to be?
Not eight.
Whatever, sorry, continue.
Okay, John Tavares at 4.5, Brad Marchand at eight.
So this is their roster with 4.5 left.
Are we happy with that?
Jesse, I am blind.
I need you to recite the roster.
nice matthews willie okay marshan tavarez yarn croak oh mcmahon domi lawton camp freeze
so i tell you what well reeves is going to be in a marley and you can switch out whatever you want
there for easton cowan or or whoever else but jake mccave um chris tanev riley carlo benoit
oel on the back end installers and wool and net and that's 5.2 million dollars left yeah you find
a way to send camp reeves and yarn croak to the moon there's something there it's interesting
because you're gonna go from this redonkulous right side to yarn croak on your second line
um there's something there there's something this is yeah this is essentially your roster with
Brad Marchand signed and some holes to plug.
Are we looking at the wrong Panther?
Because this morning, Greg Wyshynski was talking to Jeff Merrick,
and he said he thinks Aaron Ekblad's going to free agency.
And that is something the Leafs desperately need,
is another puck-moving defenseman back there.
Do you double down on what you're good at?
And maybe you don't get Brad Marchand, but you get Aaron Ekblad.
You probably have to trade off the roster at that point.
doesn't does a i mean i mean simone ben was your seventh defenseman sounds great uh but you know
the other thing is that's a lot of money back there uh tan of carlo i i mean you my instant
thing is trade riley but he's not going to get traded apparently i you can't afford it
you can't afford it okay yeah like yeah you just there are certain places where you have to spend
money and the leafs don't have to that's a want not a need you know listen i'm oh you know what
let's why stop there let's get petra i think let's get my car i'm serious do you think like
if you okay let's say you get akblad and you trade an oel who's got a good value deal how
does that change although i love oel i don't think this makes a lot of sense no you don't
No, this is like the New Jersey-Marner conversation.
It's worth asking.
Yeah, totally.
But they got six defensemen that I think are decent.
You don't...
They performed in the playoffs.
I think they're okay.
It's not a problem that you need to address.
You have more pressing matters.
It's like, oh, man, what are the Leafs going to do in goal?
Nothing.
He doesn't come for free.
He comes at a cost.
And I think that cost needs to be divided amongst the forward group.
So when you have...
The Leafs brought in Ryan Reeves a couple summers ago
because they wanted not just some snot as brad marchand said but brad marchand brad trilliving
a different brad they wanted a bit of a culture change they wanted a vibes guy and and reeves was
that people love him every team he goes to everybody loves the guy if reeves is gone and
you want this culture to shift a little bit more marner gone tavaris no you know de-emphasized to
quote ryan o'reilly uh you're basically trading off your core your core is now
Now, Morgan Riley, Austin Matthews, William Nylander,
and probably Matthew Nyes when he signs.
For not $8 million.
For not $8 million.
If Marchand signs, $7, $7.5 million.
He's a good guy.
I'm going to go with $9.50.
Okay.
Yeah, $7.5 million, let's say.
He'd play for free if he could.
Yeah, okay.
So I think the thing with Marchand is,
do you look at that contract as $2 million of that every year
is just what we would have paid Reeves
to be a culture shift.
Like, how do you look at this?
I know you have to look at it in hard numbers.
Here's how you look at it.
Marshawn makes eight.
That's how you look at it, right?
Like, I don't know.
But if he just infects the team a little bit
with a little bit of something.
Ugh.
Has he lost a game?
Oh, yeah, he has lost a game seven.
Watch, he's just going to stink here.
A pretty big one.
He's just going to stink here.
Yeah, he lost a big game seven, and it was a big part of losing that game seven.
And he was also not good in that game.
I think for his final prank, he will be the worst Leaf.
Ever.
Ever.
For his final prank.
It would be the most Leafs thing to ever happen.
It would.
Brad Borshan signs for $8 million, three years, and he comes here, five goals.
Injured for the playoffs.
Oh, no, Jesse.
Not even like injured in the regular season.
So like we get the LTIR.
Shaq Celtics Martian.
Yeah.
Oh, no, dude.
We're talking like Raptors signing someone way over the hill.
Hakeem Olajuwon Raptors.
Oh, no.
That's what's going on here.
Hakeem was like 46 and nobody knew.
This is what's happening.
Oh, Jesse.
But he did play pretty well into his 40s.
Maybe he can be Hakeem in his early 40s.
The big hurt on Chase.
Steve, you nailed this.
Steve, this is your greatest take of all time.
Oh, God.
all right all right marshan's coming to the leafs and he's gonna be awful okay three years
with toronto does he hit 50 points no total no god i'd still love to see him with matthews though
wouldn't you think up the joint you want to see that i know i know that i know that nize uh
nize and marshy play i think the same way do they not but wouldn't it be cool if you could shift one
of them and just have nize nize marshan matthews nize and marshan be competing the lfr title would
be mighty might snore oh what because remember he said you're mighty might roar yeah man the
great thing about brad marchand right now and his role in the florida panthers is he's the third
line left i know you have one of the most talented dudes uh in terms of just like the the level he
can get to mentally amongst nhl players and he's only tasked with going out there on a third line
and dominating and he's done a great job in that role because they have such a deep forward group
the leafs are asking him to play you're asking him to play with matthews yeah it's a different
task and i don't know i don't know if he fits on this roster especially at eight uh uh anything
here i'm just texting our social lead uh justin fisher uh can you please photoshop marshan's head
onto my head on the roar photo why well because you know what would marshan look like in a leaf
jersey we have a rendering yeah fair fair uh steve will do his watch along tomorrow night as usual
and i do want to mention this and steve mentioned this a lot in his uh watch alongs uh stpn is
participating in the get real virtual 5k this year to support rainbow railroad to slgb2q plus
community uh the idea is uh they go into schools and teach kids not just about the community but
you know uh mentor kids that maybe don't have the same sort of access to mentorship for people
that are just like them um and also uh rainbow railroad it evacuates queer individuals from
dangerous environments around the globe to find safety so friday june 27th we're asking you to
run walk ride anything uh that has got wheels you can even push a stroller doesn't matter and
the links are in the description are we have a four thousand dollar thing that we're trying to
reach here are you guys confirmed we're skating i'm down skate skating 5k i'll skate book in the
ice i'm ready skate all right i swear to god i'll skate get skating dangle i swear i'll do it
i'll do it hard i like that 5k on on skates isn't too bad no i don't think it is what do you what
do you have an hour i hope i don't even know i hope we'll have to find that out yeah yeah anyway
we'll we'll be tracking it we'll do it that's chat uh how how long that is and we'll do that
many laps i think somebody said it was like 34 i'll do 46 push-ups which you did on stream i'm
so sore i'm actually still so sore uh so talking about game three a little bit because the reason
i saved it for later is there's been so many breakdowns of it already um i feel like what
paul maurice's quote was after game seven against the leafs is applicable to game three and he said
you know you guys are going to torch these guys and it's really actually actually very close
with edmonton and florida i actually believe them and i do think this is a game that got away from
the oilers and i and i i was thinking about okay so what do we talk what do we deduce from game
three and what i came to is next to nothing you know like it in terms of how we think game four
is going to go whatever happens in game four i don't think it will happen because of game three
hey that's how you lose they lost right well they they did try to take a pound of flesh with them
wallman got the uh the fine for spraying the bench which i love i love wallman's been great
that's why he got fine for spraying the bench i thought he got fined for punching kachuk while
he was being restrained by he got he got two oh we got two yeah he got two oh again one was for
the spray and one was for the holden punches someone getting fined for being third man in
on matthew kachuk george colin no notes hilarious legitimately hilarious i can read it to you
edmonton's wallman has been fined five thousand dollars the maximum allowable under the cba for
roughing florida's matthew kachuk wallman has also been fined five thousand dollars the maximum
unallowable under the cba for unsportsmanlike conduct for an incident involving florida's
bench he's fined 10k for two separate incidents can i just say that makes no sense and is stupid
fines are there to be a deterrent so he did something that was finable and plus so you
find him twice yeah no shouldn't the next step be a suspension no i'm not advocating for that
by the way i'm just trying to illustrate with every decision the department of player safety
makes that they're not a thing they're not a department in a league that isn't a league
they just show up and make shit the fuck up every time they get up it would be silly goosery to
suspend him for anything he did yeah but it's like it's like jamie ben uh which i will always
bring this up he got fined played the next game got fined what is the point of a fine right right
What on earth is the point of a fine?
Is it not accumulating?
If you keep doing bad things,
do you not eventually get to the point
where we have to suspend you?
Jake Wallman found that amount of money
in his locker this morning.
Are we kidding?
If you went out every single game and said,
I will pay the $5,000
if I can just spray the water bottle every game,
is there a point where the NHL suspends you?
Or can you just keep paying the fine
game after game after game
and it doesn't matter?
That's kind of what you're saying.
all right let's do this let's do 82 no no no 82 times 5 000 82 times 5 000 ask alan if i can write
off getting fined on my taxes uh i don't think you can 410 000 you know next year there's probably
well we know with dry sidle he's gonna make 14 million what's kachuk's contract
9.5?
Oh, I hate it.
Take away the .5,
and every game I get to spray
whoever I want with a water bottle in my face.
I would probably do that.
Now, don't you do it before the puck drops, Jesse,
because that'll get you a $25,000 fine.
Whoa!
That's a million dollars to the owner.
So, $410,000 divided by 9.5 million.
Okay, you get to spray the opponent's bench
82 games
for 4.3%
of your salary.
4.3.
If my salary is 9.5
million and I'm Matthew Kuchuk
who burns ants, maybe.
I probably
would take that deal.
Yeah, like Trevor Phillips
on skates. This guy
doesn't think or care
or nothing.
That is
I think they should do it every game.
You're going to suspend me for spraying water.
Exactly.
Yeah, yeah.
Really?
Really?
I think the Panthers.
That's the argument.
The Panthers, like, let's say they win the Cup this year.
So you're back-to-back Cup champions.
You know how bored you're going to be in October,
and you're probably going to be licking your wounds?
Just game one, opening face-off, don't even try to take it.
Skate over to the bench, spray them with water,
wait for the whistle, and just see what happens.
as a as an experiment you know what the panthers owe us all the garbage they've put us through
last few years they owe us as an experiment to do this since we're on the matthew kachuk thing and
who he is and his ant burning um in his spare time it can can i just do a brief aside on the
end of the game and him and evander kane yeah please because the dude does that every scrum
oh he's a coward he's legitimately a coward anything's going on he's gonna be the eighth
man in forget third if two guys are tussling he lets everybody get into the big scrum he comes in
throws a couple punches and then go hides next to a lineman so they hold him back and nobody else
can touch him he plays so bad the panthers play hockey with less integrity than any team in
recent memory and and they're gonna ride it to back-to-back cups i i wonder in that moment
are you not embarrassed no there's 40 cameras in that stadium this is internationally broadcast
no and you you're running from everybody there's gonna be more cameras on you when you hoist the
cup than during any of those incidents you know what they're gonna show at your retirement
ceremony none of those things and if they do you know what you're gonna do and everyone in the
building is gonna do laugh they're not gonna be like what a piece of shit coward snake yeah they're
gonna be like he won yeah yeah at a boy the the mouth guard that is just hanging out of his mouth
at all times the rabbit punches while soulless in the eyes and not looking at the person he is
And the fucking, the scuba.
He also does this thing.
Oh, my God.
That's what it looks like.
It just hangs up and it goes up like he's getting air from the surface.
He also does it with a stick in his hand a lot of the time.
So he'll rabbit punch you with the stick in the hand.
You can't get him back because the stick's there.
And he's hitting you with the stick.
Yeah.
Because the stick's in the hand and the hand's rabbit punching.
And how many times has he been fined for it?
How many times has anyone been jumped for it?
Yeah, the NHL likes it.
And that's okay.
The NHL likes it.
You know that.
so so go and do something about it and i think where i what i like that the oilers did and this
is where i get upset with people who i'm like please go back and watch the leafs lightning
or the leafs panther series if you've forgotten already the oilers ended the game you know they
took a bazillion penalties they made a ton of mistakes they all compounded and sometimes
a game gets away from you you can lose six to one but when the oilers lost six to one they were like
we're gonna we're gonna cause some bruising trent frederick we're not even getting fined
is but this league is embarrassed but that is it's it's it's in forget that though forget that
though i want to talk about i want to talk about losing and taking a pound of flesh with you which
the panthers always do and the oilers are doing losing with honor is something we've asked the
leafs to do for nine years please in the middle of november they lose these games and it's pathetic
because they put up no effort
and then the same thing happens in the playoffs
and it's something we've begged them to do
I think it's a fantastic point
when you watch the Oilers lose
they lose with at least some degree of passion
and then Connor McDavid
goes up to a podium
and says we're going to come back
and we're going to be even better
and we're going to get this thing done
you haven't seen our best yet
imagine not being completely humiliating
just so embarrassing
to cheer for
um no but let's let's dial it back because i've been giving it to the panthers a lot
let's let's look at this uh like very analytically okay trent frederick is a replacement level
player on the oilers i don't think he's that bad usually uh but he's clearly playing through
something he's on their third or fourth line he's he's a marginal oiler they could play someone
else in his spot tomorrow night and you would barely notice i think he skated up to matthew
kachuk who is one of the league's stars he has like what 15 points while playing damaged in these
playoffs he skated up to matthew kachuk cross-checked him multiple times cross-checked him
so hard that his stick broke or no sorry it wasn't matthew kachuk it was sam bennett who is probably
he's the league's leading playoff goal
score and probably going to win
the Conn Smythe if the Panthers win the
Cup. That
a replacement level player
skated up to the league's leading goal score
and snapped his stick over his
back. And what happened?
Absolutely nothing. He
got mobbed. You mean
in terms of more discipline? He got a penalty
in a game that was
already 5-1 in the
third period he didn't even get off fine so here's what i would propose if you're not doing that in
a game where you're down four in the stanley cup final you don't want to win the cup and there were
a number of times where other teams in the league and we'll focus on the leafs here proved they
don't want to win the cup at the end of game five against the panthers you're down to six
nothing they didn't look like a team who wants to win the cup no wait and that's apparently when
the leafs this is what i don't get that is when you know there's the conversation said well the
leaf fans have really turned on them they booed them off the ice yeah because you're humiliating
you're humiliating dork ass losers you lose go ahead and prove your name lose like you lose
like losers go ahead and prove you're not trent for the league has said through their actions and
decisions this is what we want spraying water evil cross check so hard it breaks the stick
fine not fine as in find fine as in go ahead fill your boots that's two minutes for cross checking
I don't. Is it a nice thing to do? No, it's not. But if the game is lost, legitimately lost, and you're not doing that, I have to ask why. I have to ask why. Do you want to win the cup or not? The league told you you're allowed. Fuck them up. Go with it.
Two hands slashed them on the foot so hard it breaks
and doesn't stop bleeding for days.
Steve, oh my God, that's so gruesome.
Cool.
It's verbatim what Darnell Nurse did to Ropey Hintz.
Yes, and then Evan Bouchard came back the next game
and smashed him in the exact same location.
Yeah, you know who missed the next game?
Ropey Hintz.
You know who didn't?
Darnell Nurse.
The league has told you you're allowed to do these things,
and if you're not doing them, you don't want to win the cup.
That's how it is in 2025.
It's good to see that stuff from the Oilers,
but I don't think anybody's surprised at this time watching this game
that the Oilers have that in them.
This is their second time in the Stanley Cup final.
They are a very competitive team.
We can hang with the Panthers when they're playing at their best,
which they weren't early on in this game.
No, they weren't.
Which was surprising to see.
Bad mistakes, bad goaltending.
Again, to me, it's Calvin Pickard's time.
I think you bring him back.
The first goal was Skinner.
He didn't know where he was.
This is the thing.
Skinner, it's like, oh, my God, he's spectacular.
Oh, my God, he's unplayable.
It's one of the two, and he's been great for this run,
but every once in a while, Stuart Skinner needs a reset.
Forget the reaction, or forget how out of position he was on the first goal.
Go look at his reaction to the fourth goal.
Body language?
He's hurt.
He's hurt, and I think it's groin.
Maybe somebody accidentally on purpose fell on his leg.
I don't know.
Hey, the other thing I want to say is that—
When this series is over, do we find out that Bennett injured him?
I don't know.
The question I have for you guys is, you know, the other side of it.
I started the segment with, I think these two teams are close,
and I think sometimes games get away from you.
And if a game gets away from you against a good team like the Florida Panthers,
they're going to kick your ass.
The Panthers lost 8-1 in their series last year and won the cup.
But could this be, Jesse and Steve,
could this be the Florida Panthers figuring out this year's Edmonton Oilers?
The Oilers definitely didn't look like they had an answer,
and last night was the first night where I was like,
Jesus, they miss Hyman.
They miss him bad.
Like, Perry's 40.
This is a long series and a long playoffs,
and he's played an insane amount of hockey.
Nugent's hurt.
There was one power play where he wasn't even out there
with the top unit.
I don't know if that's them trying stuff or resting him,
because I think he was out there with the second unit later.
Kapanen was after being so effective was utterly ineffective that's Kapanen's game though Pod
Colson got rocked by Sam Bennett right he oh my god oh my god but is that is it is it the
Panthers finding because this is the thing Panthers are a long series team they love a
long series they figure you out Evander Kane was a was a net negative on the team I don't like I
have a hard time blaming the Oilers
in this series because I can't
pinpoint anything that the
Panthers are bad at. If you go
through each facet of
a hockey game and what a team
can be good at, the Panthers excel in that
way. If you go down the list,
they have one of the best goaltenders in the world.
They have one of the best coaches in the world.
They're spectacularly deep
in the forward group to the point earlier
when they have Brad Marchand on the third line
and their center group is
so deep and they have sam bennett who's scoring at a clip he doesn't score at in the regular season
most teams don't have a a second line as good as their third no like their their offense is
spectacular and they're able to forecheck like no other team in this league and then if they
need sam bennett to to score off of the rush like he's he's mini mcdavid he can charge through the
charge oh yeah the defense and get into the into the slot area and get a shot on net and they can
do that and on the back end they have a great group of players and they added seth jones at
the trade deadline they only got better so like and then they're special teams like they're
capitalizing on the opportunities edmonton gives them and they're able their pk is also really
good and score really good pk rad marsh and really good power play what part of hockey are they bad
at so when edmonton is struggling against this team i'm like yeah the other team's just better
at everything than everybody else like they're better than 31 other teams when this game was
attainable. Evander Kane took a
penalty. He took two penalties.
One of them was probably kind of
bullshit. The other
is offensive zone. Again,
another offensive zone penalty.
You have seven men on the ice, so
you take a too many men penalty.
The game is still somewhat within
reach, but it's pretty much out of reach.
Skinner puts it over the glass. It looks like
it has the feeling of
when the Leafs went down one goal.
And you're like, ooh, this is kind of over.
Yes.
they let one in i don't have a lot of confidence it didn't feel the way i usually feel when i'm
watching the oilers where i'm like ah but they got it yeah they're fine i bet the panthers to win
minus four and a half when they were up by two goals because it looked like it was verging on
a blowout and it ended up uh they end up with five four what'd you win like five cents no like
mine they won by minus four and a half like they won yeah yeah so it was like six to one at the
time so it was giving blowout to you yeah it was giving blowout because that's what it seemed it
seemed didn't seem like the oilers had it that night and that's how it played out congrats to
you yeah yeah it was good what'd you get what'd you get on that one six to one so whatever i put
it i forget it was like the fucking four bucks or whatever no that's great 24 bucks yeah that's
John Tavares' next contract.
There you go.
Six times four.
Hey, the one thing I also want to mention from this, too,
is it looks like Trent Frederick is going to re-up and stay with the Oilers.
We're not totally.
There's been rumors about that, that they're in contract.
Now, when that trade happened, when that trade happened,
I was like, this is a frigging great trade for the Oilers.
Just needs to get healthy.
He's been, I think he's been spectacular for them in that role.
And I think that's a great guy to keep around.
I love that guy.
Yeah, I mean, I think he's hurt.
well yeah but i mean that's what he is hurt right that's my point right like this everybody's sort
of hurt you look at your grading performances on yeah they're probably hurt and he was very hurt
like he wasn't playing regular season and if you lose this one you go right after the best player
again and you try to injure them literally try to injure them oh yeah you know you tried it no
you're trying to injure him yes you're trying to make it so that sam bennett is either less
effective or cannot play that is what you're doing by snapping your stick over him and the
league said go for it so steve dangle watch along tomorrow where i'm sure that will not come up at
all i'm sure you want to talk about it um but it's gonna be fun thursday night game we do not
have a game this weekend or till later right that's sunday isn't it no we have saturday
no this is this is the weird one so you have a saturday there's two days off despite no travel
than one day off between game four in florida and game five in edmonton wow tomorrow night
the flight back by the way to edmonton is not so bad yeah but it's going to be a hit bonanza
whatever you got to sit on that plane for what is that a four-hour plane ride just stiffen them up
oh just make it sore yeah oh yuck every time they go in for uh go in for a puck that's in their feet
you just push down on them a little bit
right on the upper body just reef on their back
oh yeah no it's going to be dirty
game four is going to be friggin dirty
looking forward to that do we want to do a press conference today Jess
sure alright let's do it
uh don't forget
if you are a subscriber
to sdp vip you get a new episode of city dangle podcast right after the game tomorrow night
buddy we're doing three episodes a week i keep saying this on the streams
until free agency then we're going down to two episodes a week then in august we're going to go
down to zero episodes a week and we're going to start back two episodes and then when the season
begins again it'll be three episodes but the whole time sdp vip once a week yes even through
august yes that's that's the fun thing like if you don't if you want contest in august you can
get it yes we will have at least one episode a week throughout august uh even though we won't be
recording new shows we get to take a vacation and you don't get to miss us
here we are we had this question from michael roscoe and michael said not a question okay
they replied to our uh any questions for the sdp tweet on twitter and they said not a question
but wanted to shout out the show and the fellas for covering the jack eichel saga years ago
because of that my brother got disc replacement surgery last week and is on his way to being
fully healthy again after almost a decade of pain wow love you guys i love you i know sabers fan
tell me how it was a good call no you you keep no no i see your tweets and they sustain me they
are the gas to my tank okay i love it in fact they're not even that they're the vin diesel
don't touch the red button part of the car the not the nitrous oxide yep that fires my shit up
good for you i'm so happy for your brother that's great and also jack eichel is a stanley cup winner
sabers fans just throwing that out there i thought it was pretty funny oh that makes me hot him just
being like yeah uh the placement surgery works and maybe yeah but jack didn't like it here he
doesn't do jack stop you believe kevin adams propaganda you be you believe terry pagula
propaganda what oh what am i talking to here come on sabers fans you gotta know where the problem
is and the problem wasn't jack it wasn't personally i want to get disc replacement
surgery because of tyler johnson ah yeah not because of jack you should get the other surgery
just to side with sabers fan yeah no i will fuse my neck instead every 10 years you know it's super
dope yeah getting surgery every 10 years on your neck yeah the one that doesn't stick yeah here's
one that as soon as we're done as soon as you're fully healthy it will start to deteriorate how
to a point we have to do it again ever an option i i'm not a jesse hey jesse if i ever go bald
the way i'm gonna fix it is i'm actually gonna get a time machine and go back to the 80s and
get hair plugs yeah instead of what they have now jesse i think it was an option because it was the
only option all right uh but then when that was then they came up with a new one and the sabers
are like no give me the old one yeah that we'll have to do we'll have to hey this this guy's on
an eight-year contract so we'll have to likely do this twice over the course of his eight-year
contract okay what a fucking bunch of brain surgeons these guys are sorry neck surgeons
neck surgeons wow unbelievable unbelievable that was all right it's just insane i got that guy
same say as sabers fans who are like fire adams make pagula sell the team are actually like yeah
but also everything they said about jack eichel is correct that's literally what you're telling me
i i just don't know what to do how are the sabers catching strays right now they i'm sorry wow
If you defend the Jack Eichel trade at this point,
you deserve some strays.
It's like Blackhawks fans defending Saad for Panarin,
and they did over and over and over again.
And then what was the other trade I mentioned today
that was just terrible?
Absolutely terrible.
Gauthier.
Oh, Cutter.
Oh, my God.
Flyers fans.
You are eating so much Flyers propaganda poo.
On the Adam Wilde bingo card,
it's Cutter, Gauthier, Jack Eichel, and Kyle Dubas.
Kyle Dubas, thank you.
well sod for panarin i guess has fallen out of the top probably off in the second world war
and the second no no first that's the more interesting in the prussian war the song
franco-prussian war what is that which is a precursor to the first world war yes you love
that right you see french got their butts kicked were you were you franco or prussian
on that one was i franco or prussian yeah i and listen it's like man wow two authoritarian
regimes are going at it who do you root for i couldn't know less about that well it's it's one
of the more important wars of all shut up i don't care i know that's okay listen like if we had a
bird conversation i wouldn't care either it's okay here was the franco-prussian war
before or after 1899 before so they know about the franco-prussian war in the red dead universe yes
that's crazy that's why there's also um a lot of german immigrants so it's interesting the west is
funny red dead redemption gets one thing right you know that irish guy at the beginning who's
super fun and they kill him off too early they got all of it right fuck you yeah um uh sean sean
most spoiler most of the people who lived in the west had scottish or irish accents or german
accents in 1899 yes absolutely that's it was settled by and that's canada it's like a lot
of ukrainians a lot of a lot of germans a lot of a lot of them had very thick accents so that's
that southern accent that you see in like cowboy movies was not real that's that's they had
immigrants they were a lot of them were immigrants and a lot of them had thick thick accent no
they all sounded like roger clark what do you think budweiser came from saint louis missouri
was in the middle of nowhere is absolutely it's a no it's a midwestern budweiser comes from horses
that's i've learned that from the commercial comes from no it was carried by it doesn't come from
horses yeah they have those big like clip-clopping horses with the big they they do yes the draft
horses yeah draft horses draft beer the clip-clopping belgian draft beer horses that's
right yes horses and budweiser commercials and they throw football sometimes that's right they
do the horses throw the football actually they play football they've organized the game on their
own you just give them a football and they learned over centuries and they also learned how to make
beer this is all fact look it up this was about jack eichel's neck yeah look it up all right next
up mr t reynard says is matthew nye's just the next michael bunting he wants us to oh frig you
nhl are playing on a line with two of the best players in the world with the leafs
Raynard gives us these stats
161 games played
we have the finger in the air
because he's like
but actually
can you let him ask the question first
I didn't say anything
let him ask the question
I didn't say anything
Michael Bunting
161 games played
46 goals
112 points
Matthew Nyes
same amount of games played
161
44 goals
which is two less
than Michael Bunting's 46th.
94 points, which is a lot less
than the 112 Michael Bunting had.
Rebuttal, Steve Dangle.
I'm going to come to your house tonight,
pull the blankets over your head,
and fart under them.
That's my rebuttal.
Matthew Nyes is younger, bigger,
less insufferable to officials.
And his teammates.
When Bunting became a Leaf,
I think he was 26.
Yeah.
And I like Mike Bunting a lot.
I tweeted this.
There was a conversation, apparently, the Leafs asked some of the core guys,
do you want to keep Michael because they wanted to re-sign him?
And the guys were like, eh, let's see if we can find a different option.
Michael Bunting went to the Tyler Bozak School of Youth where he was like 28
and everyone's like, who is this tiny child on our team who is 19 and full of potential?
No, that's a grown man in their prime.
Knies is only going to get better and better and better.
and how dare you um i'm gonna come down your chimney like fart santa claus so michael did
jack did jack hans burner account write that what jack hon is a is a former leafs the original
analytical guy doesn't thinks matthew nyes is is smoking mirrors did i see a tweet um that um
dubas wanted to trade down with that stupid pick because the nice pick yes and um west clark was
like you pick matthew knives and move on well god bless him god bless west west clark thank
thank you with i don't know what happened to my faith yeah good for west i don't know what
happened to my faith um one thing we forgot to shout out when uh brad marshand scored his ot
winner in game two no one was more excited in the building than his mother oh yes that was so cool
whenever there is a wholesome hockey mom moment yeah it deserves a shout out she was so hockey
mom in that moment go back and look at it she goes bradley yeah she called him bradley it was
it brought a tear to my eye yeah i love that yeah because that's that's 37 years of work on that
child yep you know to get to that moment which was so cool to see bradley um steve yes now that
your little one is playing hockey how is mrs dangle as a hockey mom uh she's not there very
often um she she was absent she was that yeah absent piece of garbage no she was there um
uh whenever she's there she usually has isla who is a tiny baby and we're usually chasing her
around now literally because she can walk and is getting towards run um but i like to take isla
and um hold her right up against the glass and she just bangs on it and freaking has a great time
um but uh leo doesn't need a hockey mom because i am it i'm both parents yeah you're like three
parents in one i i have to not be a psycho you're getting uh you're getting in the territory of you
better get skating leo well i'm worried i felt i felt bad because uh he was doing little drills
and I had to bang on the glass and the instructor looked at me and she looked at me. No, no, no,
wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. I promise this is
okay. She, she looked at me and she's looking at me with the fear of, oh, it's another psycho,
but I'm pointing at him. I'm like, he has to pee because he was looking at me and doing like the
dance. And so we rush them off the ice and drag them to the dressing room. And then we got them
back out there i wasn't like leo hey better get skating leo i swear to god leo okay i know you're
four you're always gonna be four if you don't get skating let's go like yeah yeah okay that's good
um also to end the show kel mccarr won the norris trophy uh during the show while we were recording
He's no Darlene.
And they are having an NHL Awards.
I know we brought it up.
Oh, I thought they weren't.
And we thought they weren't, but they are on, I think it's this Thursday or something.
Yeah.
When they announced.
The Kale McCarr Norris votes came out today, too, by the way.
And he is far and away the Norris winner in terms of how people voted.
The NHL Awards will give.
It's the very Norris winner.
What?
What?
What are you reading?
I can't.
Why are you reading it during the show?
I didn't mean to, because it looked like it was...
Sorry.
I can't, I can't, I can't, I can't, I can't.
No, put your phone away.
You want me to?
Let's Jesse finish this thing.
I'm sorry.
I was just talking to them, the show.
The NHL Awards air an hour before Game 4,
so when you're on your stream, they're going to be...
As you're on your stream, they'll be ending.
And they're going to do the Vesna and Heart
for the NHL Awards.
It's only an hour long.
Thank God.
one hour hosted by Isaiah Mustafa.
That is the old Spice guy.
Oh, is it?
Yes.
Oh, that's cool.
All right.
Is he going to do the old Spice schtick
or is he just going to be Isaiah Mustafa?
I assume he's just going to be Isaiah Mustafa.
You can hit the extra, Jesse.
So they advertised it as like an hour before game four,
but it actually airs at six.
And I guess it's pregame starts at seven.
So six o'clock on Thursday, the NHL awards.
Cool.
Yeah, weird.
One time I saw Isaiah Mustafa at a bar
with Maple Leafs defenseman Mike Koska.
It was very confusing.
That is confusing.
I don't know how they know each other.
I never got an answer.
Hockey fan, it sounds like.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
