Starting point is 00:00:00 This is Steve Dangle Podcast, powered by Sports Interaction. Want to bet? Spank Andy. Woo! S-D-P-P. The Steve Dangle Podcast, with your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wilde, and Jesse Blake. Let's go! Hi!
Starting point is 00:00:21 Hi. How you feeling, man? Uh, eh. Better. Bronchitis, huh? It's just the worst. So you had strep? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:00:30 Now you have bronchitis. And before that, like food poisoning or Norwalk mini, the remix. I don't know. You know what they say about it? Steve's been sick for the entirety of winter. I'm getting a lot of shit, by the way. And you guys have caught none of it. Well, it's because you're run down.
Starting point is 00:00:45 Usually when, I always find that when people are run down, they don't get anyone around them sick. It's because you're sick because you're run down. It's not you're sick because it's a particularly virile and extreme. By the way, and that probably doesn't hold up to science. And I'm sure I'm going to get a whole bunch of germ people who are like, excuse me. you taught me how to use a puffer yeah so show show them how to use a puffer it's oh again yeah here do it so what do you do let's get crazy give it a good shake so you give it a good shake and
Starting point is 00:01:08 then you go and you hold six seconds one two three four five and six exhale and you do that twice do that twice i do that whenever there's a cat in the room which is every damn day i was about to say you live with it i know i take allergy pills and it's fine and you must really like her um i I wanted to start the show not with Steve's health although it is amazing that you're here and I'm getting a lot of shit from people who are like hey Adam before Christmas you were off for six days what the hell was your problem and Steve showed up for every
Starting point is 00:01:38 show you're a maniac every show we canceled Thursday I know but you fought through and you did Friday yeah so what the hell I just couldn't get off the damn couch I think what it is is I'm lazy and don't care why didn't you tough it out
Starting point is 00:01:53 yeah exactly if there's anything we've learned from COVID it's you should tough it out yeah absolutely don't tough it out people should yell at you yes and get really mad and say you're not a man i think you shame them and you definitely question masculinity for sure listen that's the first thing you must go to by the way i wanted to play this because i think this is hilarious would steve or jesse had got have gotten this jeopardy question correct and it's a hard one worth a lot of money okay does this like current jeopardy yeah but it's it's it's don't worry they're not going to come for us and take it down okay we're promoting their
Starting point is 00:02:27 show i hope not here we go tonic jake ontario eight the intra-province rivalry between the national capitals ottawa senators and these provincial capital nhlers comes to a fever of hate jake and we're the keep going no no okay i was waiting for our answer would you have gotten what would the answer would you have given i mean he started with who are the which we already know is wrong yes what would you would you have said who are the toronto maple that's right jesse flames no flames provincial capital nhl comes to a fever of hate jake you're the flames no you stink does the next guy get it right it cuts off there uh no i don't that's where that's where i died oh you think i did any research beyond that come on come on um saw the 14th anyway i
Starting point is 00:03:20 just wanted to start the show with that because i thought that was pretty fun i want to know if they got it right i do too i desperately want to know if they got it right what is the what is an american being a hockey fan what what is the equivalent of that in canada because like americans and like i'm not insulting you it's it's a bit of a niche i got it right what is it ncaa football ncaa yeah yeah i think like if there's canadian jeopardy and you ask a question like that about an ncaa football yeah team the americans sitting there watching canadian jeffrey like how the fuck don't you know that ohio state buckeyes obviously no and you would be like i don't know but they're like this is the most popular thing i was gonna say tennis
Starting point is 00:04:06 but tennis is too popular no tennis international sport yeah exactly way too popular canadians care more about tennis than americans like per capita canada loves tennis better now much better now yes now probably yeah probably not canadians to watch exactly it was like stephen ames no that's golf uh who was the guy no who's the guy that's always good at doubles and he's like oh my god you know what i'm talking about yes i do that was our only guy forever i know the guy who's the doubles guy i we're old because we grew up and it felt like canada had one person for like every sport and people grew up watching them and now we have tons so we spread the the the thing in canada too is that um they always put a little red maple leaf next to their name on the ticker
Starting point is 00:04:53 that's your guy he's 40th he's 40th daniel nestor that's right thank you i don't know why i said steven ames but here we go steven ames the golfer yeah he was the one he was along with uh maybe that guy who won a master's yeah which who won on my birthday i remember watching it on my birthday he rode the simulator right at the zoo are you gonna tell the mike weir zoo story no i am not every time we bring up mike weir you have to tell the mike weir zoo story i absolutely do not why not under no circumstances i let him on the zoom mobile or no the simulator ride once and i played him the wrong ride and he looked at me confused and i winked at him like i was giving him a special treat and so i put him on a second one for free and and then he left just putting
Starting point is 00:05:40 him on the wrong ride mean so the simulator right fuck now i'm so now i'm just doing it do it do it it's a good story the simulator ride is this pod um you get in it and it lifts up and it shakes around to the movie that is playing inside of the pod so like you can go on a safari and a gorilla grabs a hoodie jeep and shakes it around or you can go on a roller coaster and you do big nose dies and oh you go up the loop-de-loop and i accidentally put him on the wrong one what did you put him on i um did you put him on safari but it was actually underwater i think he well because like the only one advertised we did a very poor job of advertising what this ride could do um everyone went on the safari one but the safari one was not the best one in my opinion there was
Starting point is 00:06:29 another one that it was like you you got to it was like a like a rip-off version of andy's room from toy story and that one i thought was really cool um and it shook around the most and whoa whoa that's we're talking about 2009 vr whoa and uh i think i put him on that and he was very confused when why am i on a toy ride at the zoo when wonderland was owned by paramount back in the day ah they used to have the spongebob ride yes do you remember that do you ever guys ever go on that one no it's the same thing except in a movie theater it was before that days of thunder i don't remember that so it was a originally it was a race car simulator which was supposed to be the tom cruise movie uh where he's a nascar driver i did a shrek one i think yeah so that
Starting point is 00:07:18 it became spongebob after that because you know race days of thunder became kind of outdated never heard of that movie yeah what was that from like the 90s it was from the yeah yeah yeah yeah And it was a good movie I mean it's cheesy right It came out right after Top Gun And I think that's where Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman met
Starting point is 00:07:33 I'm pretty sure she was His love interest Neat Yeah anyway Jesse go ahead No the Spongebob ride Was very good at Wonderland It was the same concept As that
Starting point is 00:07:40 You sit in the chair And it does it On the screen You're going through Bikini Bottom And a lot of fun But Mike Weir Did not enjoy it
Starting point is 00:07:49 No he didn't What did he say You ruined Mike Weir's day It was very confused I didn't ruin it You ruined his day It wasn't just him it was kids i don't know his nephews nieces i don't know you ruined all of their days no i
Starting point is 00:08:05 didn't ruin all of their days anyways read steve's book it's a good you should and also i stole a dollar from kyle wellwood and it yeah anyway um we got a lot to cover today uh but i do want to jump into this first because the leafs are playing their last game before the all-star break tonight which is usually the best game of the season they definitely don't feel like they're going on vacation right after the game i do not like complaining about the schedule because i think like i think of if i were given the task of coming up with the nhl schedule that gives me heart palpitations right what is going on is everyone okay yeah what do you mean it's awful were there any games yesterday there were two games yesterday there were two games yesterday
Starting point is 00:08:50 two games on sunday two on tuesday and then two today it's fucked up what are you doing that both games on sunday started at the same time they're both five o'clock starts like 5 30 and it sucks for everybody that like for the players that want to go on vacation you're making the schedule yeah you cannot have the game start at the same time stagger it and stagger it by half an hour so yesterday's games as well all seven o'clock starts there's only three games yesterday all seven o'clock starts today there's only two games both 7 30 starts and it's buffalo in toronto and boston so you're kind of it's the same area same region you could have staggered it a little you know the one thing i would say the one thing that might be the case is that i know that when
Starting point is 00:09:32 bands go into an arena like say scotia bank arena if they stay on past 11 they pay a fifty thousand dollar fine okay because everybody who works there has to get paid for the next hour but i understand the whole thing about stagger the starts of the games for sure that's what that's what i'm asking you to do yeah why do we have three games on a random tuesday that all start at the same time then two games on a random wednesday that both start at the same time and then a sunday where they both start at the same time none of that made sense it's and it's a fantasy nightmare let's call it what it is right because it was this is a it's a double week double week fantasy nightmare um i did want to say before we we get into it uh your former
Starting point is 00:10:13 friends bet who's your former friend on the bruins guys that's right now do you take nick felino to score on sports interaction you know what yeah you do his name's been in the news too much so toonie steve dropping two bucks on it you'd get nine dollars really the odds are that 450 oh yeah would you take that easy to drop uh no because you can also take the no what are my No, it's on the no. The no is a 116. That's like a, yeah. Getting back a couple of pennies.
Starting point is 00:10:49 I'm taking a yes on that. That's how, that's how we did it. I'll take my pennies. Have some faith in Nick Foligno. I know. Goodness gracious. I know. And I just want to know how Jesse's feeling about this one,
Starting point is 00:11:01 because again, William Nylander is having an unbelievable year this year. William Nylander to score 50 goals this season will pay you about $9 back. It's four and a half. you still feeling good about that bat jesse if you put if you put two bucks down on it i i think i already did well that's tight that is tight i like both of them i like that he's gonna lead the team in goals and i think he hits 50 lead the team in goals i'm pretty confident in 50s tough there's
Starting point is 00:11:26 two quote dry february uh bets too okay you ready the over under how many wins will the leafs have in february over five and a half or under five and a half keeping in mind it's a short month I was about to say, how many games? Give us the... I'm looking that up right now because I'm reading... There's 20. 20 games. Sports Interaction just thinks they're going to be so bad.
Starting point is 00:11:48 I'm pulling up the thing right now. Dave definitely did that. Yeah, for sure. Well, typical Jets fan. I think... Where is the schedule? Oh, my gosh. Could NHL websites be any slower?
Starting point is 00:12:00 Is it possible? They have one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine games. Do they have, it's five and a half is the number. So do they have six, essentially, six wins or more? So we know they're playing a lot of bad teams. Yep, they are. And I'll give you the teams. We got Boston, good team.
Starting point is 00:12:20 Columbus, Columbus, bad team, bad team. Chicago, Montreal, Chicago, Buffalo, Minnesota, and Seattle. So like most of the teams are non-playoff right now. But no Matthews for most of those games. That's right. I think they get at least five. Yeah. But five and a half.
Starting point is 00:12:34 It's five and a half. So that means they got to get six. it means only three losses six and threes oh that's that's really difficult right okay and you know overtime's gonna be involved and you get better money for under by the way it's a 202 and then here's my other question you what did you what did you what range would you give them to to how many wins are they gonna get in february what's your range five or six five or six okay so here's the question there's a um there is a dry february bet of zero to two wins oh come on Okay, so that's nine times your money.
Starting point is 00:13:08 There's three to five wins. Good bet for if you're a Leaf hater, I guess. Three to five wins, 2.75 times your money. Six to seven wins, two times your money. Eight to nine wins, six and a half times your money. You are. Three to five seems like the winner for me, just because I feel like it's going to be five.
Starting point is 00:13:27 Well, they could go, so let's say they get four wins, and you said nine games. you can go like four three and two which is above 500 but under welcome to gary's nhl welcome to gary's nhl i like that i like that i like that um we'll have more leaf stuff a little bit later in the show but i actually i do want to get started with the thing really that we missed almost immediately after finishing recording the show oh my god i forgot um bo horvat i don't know if you've heard about this guy uh traded to the new york islanders uh anthony bevillier uh ati ratu or ati i called him atu oh that's how it's spelled but i've seen ati i well i also saw him
Starting point is 00:14:10 on tim and friends and he pronounced it and i was like i still don't know uh ati rati atu rati excuse me no and a conditional it's definitely rat it's ratu is it a rat too i know that because nora ratu who was the goalie for okay finland's women's team okay they'll say atu ratu and a additional first round pick in the 2023 draft now um we have a small group of half a dozen finnish listeners who correct us on everything so this is your time to shine i'm happy um from scott wheeler's uh uh uh scouting report on ratu for cadets fans he may not become a star but he's got pro tools including size quick hands and a decently hard uh hard enough shot uh uh slowly but surely he has uh learned to hang on to the puck when necessary and play quick when required
Starting point is 00:14:54 he's not smart enough to drive a line by himself or make plays when he's less involved so line mates will factor into success but on the whole and with the right development i believe he'll provide good value but scott had him ranked at number 52 the islanders drafted him in the first round and he's done okay um in bridgeport this year but the boho vat trade itself for a lot of people surprisingly you know you don't you sometimes you see a win-win sometimes you see a definite winner definite loser this time a lot of people said it's a lose-lose lose-lose i was about to say but that that should indicate that the trade is just about right i think um because you know all the canucks didn't get enough and the islanders gave uh well it's not even that
Starting point is 00:15:37 the islanders gave up too much it's that it doesn't make sense for the islanders to be in on horvat i i mean i think the i think there's two reasons why they did it this early number one uh they don't feel like being a wild card team uh so forget being the top wild because you don't want to play boston you don't want to play boston i think and i i sort of just threw this in to my video but hurricanes fans i'd be a little insulted i think the islanders have their eye on the hurricanes and they think they can take them because they've done it before oh they want to play the hurricanes in the playoffs oh yeah i think they think it's a good matchup for them potentially and i think the islanders like themselves in the playoffs and if you're the
Starting point is 00:16:25 islanders why wouldn't you i just get there just get there yeah i i wouldn't fancy playing them no they'll smother you and they've got a great goaltender it's we the rule books are different and it will favor them now dom decision has the islanders chances of making the playoffs 14 before this trade 19 now uh here's the problem boharvat scores a lot of goals yeah they needed that uh the islanders rank 31st in the league in goals on the power play so that's you know that will help but here's a lot of people threw this out there about the early work that lou lemorello's done here and i thought this was an interesting thing let's say it all goes off the rails like the 18 wheelers that we've seen with the leafs well couldn't you then trade bohorvat at the deadline
Starting point is 00:17:11 that is not a likely scenario ah you know what it's more likely than it ought to be right so by making the trade early you have all this runway to see whether or not it works the trade deadline is march 3rd it is february 1st there's a lot of time maybe not as many games as you would usually expect because of the all-star break but they have a lot of runway here the Canucks retained 25% on Horvat. I didn't realize that. Yes. Because it wasn't announced because the Islanders are a nightmare.
Starting point is 00:17:44 But Frege put it out there. Lou said it in the conference call. Oh, thank God. Yeah, Lou himself announced it. I'm glad he said that. Yeah, yeah. Thanks, Lou. So they retained 25%.
Starting point is 00:17:57 So what's 25% of 5.5? Or actually, if you look on CapFriendly, you can see what Horvat's current cap hit is. So if the Islanders were to flip Horvat, they can retain up to 50 of what's left. Yep. Jesse's looking for it right now. Waiting for the internet. Beau Horvat, 4.125.
Starting point is 00:18:23 So that is very interesting because Beauvillier was 4.15. 4.25, you said? 1.25. 4.125. five so horvat and bovillier are almost a wash wow in this deal which is incredible so you're retaining uh 50 don't make me do math but that is essentially like a two million dollar ever so slightly above a two million dollar bo horvat every team in the league can afford that i think
Starting point is 00:18:56 it's a scenario that's very very highly unlikely i think it's highly unlikely as long as they're within a couple points of a playoff spot lou's not going to be like okay i'm pulling shoot on this you know as much as we want this thing to happen them double trading bohor that's probably not happening well because the islanders likely cannot keep bohor vat then or like well obviously they wouldn't be keeping them they'd be trading them but once he becomes a free agent it's unlikely he would return and the islanders need bohor vat for next year because this first round pick is an enormous wild card it's top 12 protected so if the islanders don't miss it there's a fairly solid chance it'll end up in the top 12 which means it goes to next year and it won't
Starting point is 00:19:42 be protected so you're potentially giving up i mean if the islanders aren't a playoff team this year they're definitely not a playoff team next year and now you're talking about giving up potentially a top three pick i think by the time i don't know mid-march april rolls around we see 8.5 times 8 yeah i think they're working on the deal they they said they haven't had any negotiations before that so that's not for like i don't do that i have my agents do that there haven't been negotiations just yet but they're working on it and i think it's going to be like 8.5 times 8 whatever vancouver wasn't willing to get up to he'll get that in the island because they don't have this someone is exactly what they don't have and what they haven't had for years
Starting point is 00:20:20 so why not just lock it up someone in the aisles uh legal department is taking the contract they prepared last summer and scribbling out jt miller and putting that's exactly the cap room was always there the player fit is there give him the contract have him signed through next year you don't have the first round pick if you uh if you suck anyways what i'm curious about for so um uh patrick alvin was quite rosy in his summation of this trade he said rosy to the point of i do not believe they are his words right he said you could look at this trade like the canucks acquired three first rounders now i think he was being cheeky uh because ratu was selected in the first round although many had him pegged in the second round if you go back and look at central scouting
Starting point is 00:21:06 and all that stuff and not early in the second round late in the second round then um then you've got bevilier who was drafted in the first round eight years ago i think he'll benefit a lot from this trade and then you've got the conditional first round pick now that's the by definition he's not wrong i guess wrong you could look at it like that in fact you you must he's not right either but what's weird about bevillier is that wrong than he is right he's a useful player he's probably making a little too much money for his performance although maybe he needs to change his scenery and a little more ice time 25 26 is he yeah and i'm curious about i'm curious about bevillier because um he doesn't seem to fit where the canuck should be going this is another problem
Starting point is 00:21:52 like window wise he's now headed into his prime it's like they got another kuzmenko like yeah okay no good it's good to have good players but what are you doing the i mean if it goes if they don't take a big step forward next year you can always trade bovillier yeah so he's an asset he is an asset it's good to have assets and then you 25 and we Sorry, the athletic was wrong then Eat a bag of shit 25 years old Big ol' bag of shit
Starting point is 00:22:22 What was I gonna Listen, the Canucks Have to score their way out of every Problem The Islanders are incapable Of that and I think Beauvilliers is gonna go to a team Where he's gonna put up a number
Starting point is 00:22:40 Of points in a contract year Which is a great position to be in i mean if his agent uh advocated for this i i actually think it's a very good move well because they're gonna have to be offensive yeah yeah like he wanted out of new york for a while though oh did he oh yeah i mean there's no worse place to be uh as a young player in a contract year than on the new york islanders i'm not saying the team is bad i'm saying that you go into every negotiation comparing yourself to your peers and you're gonna have less goals because that's that's just not what they do they don't score it's they don't score they don't let you score
Starting point is 00:23:16 that's how they win every game but they don't score they don't see like there's a reason you look at his numbers and he has like 30 40 points every year and you're like how did he get four million dollars well because that's like 65 points because the islanders are still the dead puck here they are they are man so i i think he's really going to benefit from being on the canucks i i think too barzal is going to get a lot more assists he finally has a guy who can finish so that's interesting because they have lee they have brock nelson and they have bull horvat all three guys who kind of score the same way um then they have their designated creators in uh bailey and barzal they don't really have guys who can do both horvat doesn't create well
Starting point is 00:24:04 um if i had one big knock against his game people talk about offense versus defense what type of offense he doesn't create it he's a finisher which is good you need finishers it's we keep talking about how it's allegedly the hardest thing to do in the sport but i i think the islanders have gotten caught up in recent years uh with this idea that barzal can just do everything yeah yeah yeah and he can't it's not fair it's no it's not now back to the vancouver piece for a second because you're talking about bevillier going in the deal and how it doesn't really make sense it's a it's a it's a look into that jim rutherford is still sticking by the words he gave in the press conference because he said in the press conference that he's looking for guys
Starting point is 00:24:50 in a certain age range and it was a 23 to 26 year old and it's still to me that they're so hard headed about the roster construction here in vancouver they still think they have a little bit of a window here and they're not going to try and rebuild like them adding beveliate to this deal i mean like okay new york will take on your problem here that just to me screams like they're still not changing anything and when they were in the bubble playoffs who was better than beau horvat he had he had 10 goals in 17 games which window does that fit but the jim rutherford because i believe he's the one still orchestrating all this like patrick alvian's out there talking but it's not his words um rutherford said he wants these players in this age range which bevillia
Starting point is 00:25:34 is because they still believe that they can win yeah and it's ridiculous yeah yeah we'll get to that by the way what uh i'm not gonna i'm not gonna interrupt the show we're gonna keep having this conversation but there's something we need to get to so i just said stay off your phone oh okay um uh because it's worth it trust me sorry and jesse i think you're right i i think there's uh uh taking the time no i'm just listen i'm just telling you guys i'm just kind of just show managing here um i want to uh i want to say this uh bo horvat thought he was going to be a canuck for life canuck fans don't love that don't love hearing that um i want to ask if you're a free agent in the nhl and i'm not talking about a uh i'm not talking about a guy like who's like
Starting point is 00:26:21 a fringe guy who's looking for a deal anywhere they can take and i'm talking about a legitimate free agent and maybe it's a while before the canucks can even go out and sign that because right up against the cap with a bunch of bad contracts anyway why would you choose vancouver at this point as a ufa yeah oh that's a really nice city yeah sure all that's true but i'm talking about the organization right there are plenty of really nice cities and nothing against vancouver it's gorgeous yeah uh the guy who really wants to be there is the captain all he wanted was an extension that was fair so maybe that's part of the reason why you're happy to get beauvillier he's a guy who's under contract right right yeah it just seems like the organization needs to i
Starting point is 00:27:00 still don't understand the direction i don't get it okay but you know let's say this year things really don't go the islanders way the canucks get the 13th pick out of it and they choose to keep it and they win the draft lottery so they get the they get conor bedard and you pick whoever who you you can you'd give that away like as a as a present to someone because you're in such a good mood you have conor bedard rebuild done fair enough like this is the the thing we we talk about the canucks have so much work to do and they got to do this and i'm sorry you get Conor Bedard. Anybody, literally anybody in this league, it's Conor Bedard. Your rebuild's over.
Starting point is 00:27:43 Beau Horvat will wear number 14 as a part of Lou Lamorello's rules. He must have a smaller number. Gord Miller actually tweeted out a lot of Lou's rules. He said, among many of Lou's rules, he doesn't like numbers higher than 40. The two exceptions
Starting point is 00:27:59 are Casey Sazekas, which predates Lamorello with the Islanders, and Jean-Gabriel Pajot, who was allowed to keep his number 44 from Ottawa. Some of the others, no facial hair except in the playoffs. no long hair past the collar no jewelry necklaces or earrings jackets and ties must be worn two games and on the team bus and plane no broadcasters or media on the team charter including team broadcasters a lot of people including brooks like former toronto maple leaf uh he said his
Starting point is 00:28:26 rules are a joke what do we oh because he was uh well he was a marley yeah he's brooks like wouldn't like lou lamorella very much no or or my backpack what do we think about lou's rules in today's you should be able to express yourself society i don't know i've never had to live under them i just don't see it as that big a deal i think it's kind of corny to be honest but i don't i don't know if it needs to be this big i think it's a complete joke and completely outdated and you should take into consideration why people do certain things because do you know why bull where's the number he does 53 no i don't uh this was way back when he is taken yes it was it was taken and he had to take 14 um but way back when elliot friedman spoke to horvat when he was
Starting point is 00:29:15 drafted about why he wears uh number 53 uh the canucks are not fans of high jersey numbers so they considered asking horvat to switch to a lower number they changed their mind after learning from Horvat that he wears it in honor of friend Ian Jenkins. Horvat and Jenkins, a goaltender, were both picked by the London Knights in the 2011 OHL priority selection, ninth and 29th overall, respectively. Just after being drafted, Jenkins was tragically killed. He fell out from the back of a pickup truck. He was 15 years old. Horvat wears 53, which is an inverse of jenkins number 35 that he wore as a goaltender in memory wow i like that yeah yeah and i think these these hard line rules where you don't take into consideration
Starting point is 00:30:05 that people are humans and might have feelings toward things i think that's a bygone era and we need to start moving into a situation where hey maybe you're wearing this in honor of your friend and you can wear a high number if you please i think i'm i'm less uh i was more thinking the like dress code or the facial hair thing because like i don't know i'm used to being told a little bit like hey take care of yourself or something because i have to be on camera steve you look like shit today you're like can you can you not the number thing i've never that i don't get understand i don't get well and like burke was one of those guys too i i feel like i'm getting deja vu did we talk about this last yeah we did we did yeah grabovsky went from 84 on the
Starting point is 00:30:52 habs to 54 on the leafs which is also high but went back to 84 and then went back to 84 who can't who gives a shit yeah just it's a number who cares what the number who's gm when horvat was first drafted benning or was it it must have been benning it wasn't burke could have been gillis but i i think it would whoever had because remember they traded cory schneider who traded was it benning or gillis i think it was benning it was with lou oh man yeah how long is uh horvat is a bit of a 2014 gray zone for me i don't remember when he was ready to go year no i was 13 ah that's a tough draft uh all right canucks general managers uh 08 to 14 is mike gillis 14 to 21 is jim benning and horvat was drafted when well that's that's what i'm trying
Starting point is 00:31:43 to figure out i know when benning came to power it had to be uh horvath draft 2013 also i was it was the freddie it was mike gillis yeah okay wow it's been there a long time um but like there's a little leeway from gillis you know yeah you have a story like that i did want to say that and this is a secondhand conversation so i'm paraphrasing but i do have a so i do know somebody who worked with the leafs organization who was high enough to see lou every day uh no longer works there so i'm not talking out of school he asked him about this he asked the fucking guy yeah and what did he say uh no he said so he was like lou like listen i i don't really have any issues with this but why and lou's opinion was that especially for you know
Starting point is 00:32:32 at that point you're talking about uh the toronto maple leaves who are known for a very lackadaisical culture the Muskoka five not I don't know that that that's fair to those players by the way but that's what people called them it was a organization that continually underperformed you have to remember put it in that context and you bring in Matthews Marner Nylander you come to Toronto and you're an absolute god from the time you're 18 and he's like these guys so Lou says something to the effect of these guys can go out and afford anything they want they're making more money than most people in one year even with a rookie deal than most people make in 10 or 15 years and what his his thing about being cleanly shaven and putting on a suit and making sure it's pressed
Starting point is 00:33:15 and all those things is that it gives them structure he essentially said it i make them do it because it's hard because it's a pain in the ass because it's tedious and he's trying what is essentially his mantra on that part of it is routine and sticking to the things you know that rules do matter and that you have to and and that the whole team fucking hates it so it bonds them the whole team fucking hates having to shave every day they hate it why do i why do i don't want to wake up and shave i i'm 20 years old why would i want to do that and that that's the whole that was the mantra now whether or not that's right i don't get the high numbers thing that doesn't make any sense yeah i don't understand but the shaving and the and i i do think is it
Starting point is 00:33:53 cj that tells the story you guys remember the story about lou lamorello and the devil's going bowling no uh ron mclean is it the ron mclean story on our show on our show yeah so yeah if i mean the ron mclean episode's a long time ago but he talked about how i guess the the devils were going to go bowling and they were going to fly to this thing yeah i don't remember that it was bowling or whatever they were going to do something like easy like something like bowling right and something where you would wear track pants too and and lou said okay well they they have to make sure they have to wear a suit and the head coach said why like they don't No, it's a team event.
Starting point is 00:34:28 The issue is not that they had to wear a suit to the event. It's we wear suits when we fly. Right. We wear suits when we travel. And if it's a team event, which it was, you wear a suit. Yes. And so anyway, I guess the head coach goes, okay, so the plane lands and who's waiting on the tarmac?
Starting point is 00:34:46 Lou. Lou Lamorello to make sure they all wore their suits. You bet they did. Now, do you think that that's ridiculous? Sure. Do I think that that's ridiculous? Kinda. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:55 i don't i don't see the need for that anymore it's ridiculous no the the way you should be like that's such a military mind a way of thinking getting people to do things i think you should be uh you should have those habits with things like showing up to practice on time and going through drills and that sort of all nice stuff that actually matters to your hockey game and that off life stuff you should get people to like just be happy because like i think we i bring this up all the time but like people perform under you as managers when they like you they perform better when they're happy they perform better we've seen it in the research when you're when you're berating somebody they're going to perform worse and if people are unhappy at their job they're
Starting point is 00:35:37 not going to do a better job at it and if making them shave every day is annoying they're going to perform worse you you reminded me of of a few things so i used to be in the leafs locker room a little bit more often um uh during the 16-17 season and i i do remember hearing a couple stories one was do you remember that rookies were banned from uh intermission interviews so rookies were not allowed to do intermission interviews but then there's rogers who pays all this money it's for the rights and they're like okay well what if matthews gets a hat trick in his first game well okay we'll cross that bridge when we get there and then sure enough he scores four goals in the first two periods and it's like can we talk to austin and i think the leafs had to
Starting point is 00:36:23 relent like you know okay yeah i guess he sort of broke a record but um most of the time you walk in there i'm like oh my god look at all these kids we we can only speak to like eight guys like no wonder he liked roman polak so much he was one of the only people we could talk to it was like him hunwick riley must be sick to death of like everyone in the toronto media by this point and now it's five six years later bozak jvr cadre like that's it it's such a ridiculous rule it is but you know you know i guess everybody's got their thing and uh lou's got his thing and i think it's outdated and you know what lou's pushing 80 i'm not surprised no it's outdated are you surprised that an 80 year old has weird traditions that are outdated he punched 80 in the
Starting point is 00:37:08 mouth oh he's has he already i'm pretty sure yeah good for him um now the reason i told you not to look at your phone and rudely interrupted jesse was because brad marchand just called you out on twitter no no really what do you say well it actually isn't bad at all so i want you to look at your phone yeah i want you to look at your phone we're going to talk about this because there's no way to avoid it okay he's in toronto who do you of course he's going to pick at people from toronto yeah i don't of course he's gonna pick up people from toronto it's not that bad don't worry see i told you uh that's pretty funny so um so that's a fun it's a good tweet it's a very funny tweet you should print out that tweet and put it in the blue room
Starting point is 00:37:54 absolutely frame it that's a good one absolutely and you know what i think he needs to call it on LFR tonight here wait he's coming up with a response Jesse um my question to you is uh did Brad Marchand take it easy on Steve based on what you saw and we'll we will read this in just a second and I think he's just shit posting right now which is what the NHL sort of needs needs somebody to tweet a lot of fun yeah this is good so this all goes back to something that happened this morning at uh skate at the you know the pre-game early morning skate uh there is a least reporter and steve's going to catch us up on all of this uh but there's a least reporter who asked brad marshand about why he told craig morgan who is the coyotes reporter uh to shut his
Starting point is 00:38:38 piehole jacob stoller is his name you can follow him on twitter at jl stoller he's a writer and a podcaster for the hockey news and he's on his way up he's very very talented craig morgan by the way to go even further back was talking about the trevor ziegers incident bingo and he was saying that the report from the Coyotes and Stetcher was that Zegers said something, but it wasn't about Stetcher's dad. And then Brad Marchand responds to that. That's a straight your pie hole. And then we get to Jacob.
Starting point is 00:39:06 So Jacob said, I asked Brad Marchand about this tweet after morning skate at Scotiabank Arena today. Holy shit. No wonder you told me not to look at my phone. I told you. It's exploding. Of course. What inclined him to tweet that?
Starting point is 00:39:19 Brad said, ah, nothing. I read the tweet and that's what popped in my head. So I said it. And then Jacob wrote, weird, and then period. Which to me is like, okay. So Brad Marchand directly reaches out to Jacob and says, I'm sorry you didn't like my answer, Jacob. Would you like me to say something different so you don't have something so stupid to hang your career on? Great reporting this AM.
Starting point is 00:39:40 And I didn't like that. Why didn't you like that? I didn't like that because I know Jacob. I don't know him well. When did I meet him? i think in my head jacob is younger than he really is um because i want to say i think it was either the 2016 marley's uh calder cup run or 2018 i think it was 2018 because it was a few years later and he's this you know bright eye and bushy tailed
Starting point is 00:40:12 you know kid covering the team and you know he has all these questions and and everything and he's and he's starting his career and he's been here there and everywhere i think he did some stuff for the leafs nation i know he worked for it was either jets nation or their sp nation site i'm not sure um and uh i don't know i just thought that was unnecessary okay from brad in a like listen chirps are chirps it's fine we've been i've been anyway fairly open about how i feel about brad marchand on this show i think on the ice he's a reprehensible human being i think off the ice he's a gem he's a genuine gem so i just thought that answer was like i mean he's kind of tearing down the guy's whole career before it's even had a chance to take off you know and now
Starting point is 00:41:02 he's he's so that working for the hockey news and uh maybe jacob didn't need me to fight his battles for him but i i wanted to stick up for him because what the hell is that so so brad responded to steve and took this picture of steve doing that like that at the camera and said was that your mighty roar and you know it's a good chirp whatever it is a good chirp but my favorite am i owning that photo my favorite response is i've seen his cap friendly uh jacob's response to all of this is what is happening right now lol i don't know i don't know i kind of like it yeah so i said i i thought you of all people would have appreciated someone being the third man in oh come on you should go get your media passing and get on the scrum yeah yeah yeah give all the
Starting point is 00:41:52 bruins bronchitis no oh yeah that's true that's where i'm at yeah i know get in the scrum and then i get asked a question you know what i kind of you're not gonna do it jesse jesse i got it what do you mean like surely he's playing tonight yeah i don't know the few tweets that i saw people like oh he's on all-star break and he's loving life and i'm like oh no he's not he has a game this evening yeah uh make it a quote did an automated quote for brad marchand i just sent it to jesse if you can bring it up on the big board jesse um it's actually really funny um it's brad marchand holding the stanley cup saying was that your mighty roar make it a quote on twitter love that i i want to listen i seem to recall that i think you know what today and not
Starting point is 00:42:34 12 years ago i kind of like the fact that there's a little bit of shit talking here i like this oh i love it i love it it's not it's not even the maple leaves you're you're like uh you're pulling all the attention away from the maple leaf stars well but also like that's a fun chirp yes that's i don't have a problem with that i just thought he crossed the line a little bit with jacob i want to stick up for jacob okay so i don't think he's a bad guy i just thought that one thing was untoward uh uh luke fox does brad marchand chirp with any of the leafs um they're quote there's so there's not many really uh many guys likely to get into it mitch is out there talking about video games and his dog and those terrible new skates he's cut out other than that there's not a whole
Starting point is 00:43:13 lot of guys who are into it uh and he's of course making fun of mitch just joking and he said i respect his game i think he's an incredible player uh that's usually what i tell him just that he's my favorite player when we're not playing him i enjoy i enjoy watching him and things like that the things that he does are really impressive so he's feeling himself yeah why wouldn't he i mean they're number one in the league by a like miles they could lose like they've lost three straight they could lose the next i don't know eight and still probably have like a cushion at the end of it yeah they're ridiculous he knows it's it's fun to watch somebody who knows the stage and does it at that moment because he he's not going to be on twitter for the last what like two hours now
Starting point is 00:43:56 he's just been replying to people on twitter he wouldn't be doing this if he wasn't currently in a hotel in toronto yeah they play him five hours he knows he's in toronto where everybody cares the most about this shit and he's replying to people right now and he's given answers like that because he knows the stages that he's on right now and we're going to the all-star break and he can just get three days worth of news and he didn't have the stage last time the bruins came to toronto right because of all that stupid yeah because we were all focused on a saturday night we were all focused on mitchell miller and they lost because of course they did yep that was that was i was like watch them lose yep okay and that was back when i don't think they had lost in
Starting point is 00:44:35 regulation at the time yeah it might have been or something like all mark was undefeated in regulation they were absurd they were unbeatable and that game took them down because of course it did because their management were freaking idiots but and now he's back and it's all good vibes it's all fun and they're the number one team in the league and he's feeling himself he's going on steve dango on twitter for it well you think i'm upset about this no this is great he didn't include a like a link to my shit i want to say i want to say uh um i'm so glad that you handled it like this and not how bx i handled uh zidano chara chirping him on that podcast did you hear that remember back so zidane ochara said that he had heard that bx and the canucks had been
Starting point is 00:45:21 practicing their cup celebration and who they'd hand the cup to or something before game seven oh yeah right and then and and i thought okay and then they they so they come out of they come out of the first period and then they talk about like that and they tease it going into commercials like and we're gonna get bx's response next and i was like holy shit this is gonna be amazing because bx is like a good chirper right yeah and then he came on and he's like there's no way that happened and he was such a sourpuss about it and he's like this is just wrong they're just making up lies and i'm like kevin it's a joke and i'm just glad that you're joking like it's like it's good that there's a little bit of levity yeah why not just trip the shit out of each other hey brad marchand talk shit
Starting point is 00:46:00 yeah exactly i mean great um now i want to go back to vancouver for just a second it's like getting kicked by bruce lee that's what he does so great from 32 thoughts uh ellie's been talking about this a little bit he said let's see how things play out when thatcher demko returns the fact that he's signed to a bit of term makes him attractive and teams will want to get a feel for what vancouver is thinking buffalo columbus la and pittsburgh all make sense sabers and blue jackets can afford to be patient they're thinking long term but others would need to know uh he can make a spring 2023 impact particular with the price to be paid uh will there be enough runway between march between now and march 3 to convince buyers that demco is ready pittsburgh pittsburgh's
Starting point is 00:46:44 goaltending crap they don't need to yeah but jari's been out yeah i know they they have they have to deal with it now okay they are is he not coming back i don't know but i thought he was he's not been good when he's been in that's the problem oh i thought his goaltending is one of their biggest weaknesses and you have to win you have to win crosby's 36 35 you know it's another reason why the islanders kind of going for it isn't that nuts look at the two teams in the wild card right now it's washington and uh pittsburgh isn't it yep yep i don't really see any of the top three teams in the metro dropping out i don't either why not why not sneak into one of those wild card spots try for carolina over boston although carolina just kicked
Starting point is 00:47:29 boston's ass yes like i like that a lot i like that a lot um i i just i also want i just want to say this i i think it's kind of cool when you got a big goalie like that in play demko yeah because really any team that picks them like they're the fact that we're talking about buffalo and we're talking about columbus who's at the fucking what if we're getting demko's huge would be huge think about how perfect it would be though forget pittsburgh and buffalo think about how that that resets uh columbus right although if i'm columbus i'm waiting till the draft because i don't want it i don't want there to be a chance that i start winning games i look at demko similar to how i look at merzlikens um because people are talking about how demko before he
Starting point is 00:48:18 got injured wasn't having a good year yeah his team sucks they suck they're not good so oh merzlikens is garbage is is he or the blue jackets is garbage he seemed fine when they were good maybe he's better in a platoon role like somebody put him in his happy place right could be but like demko more than merzlikens has a pretty good track record of being really difficult to beat yes um i mean geez if you think you're you don't need to go through a rebuild if you're vancouver keep the guy he's good do you need more i don't think he's good he's a good goalie i think he's going to be successful wherever he goes and just before penn's fans get mad at you uh jari's back in the lineup he's played the last two games uh how did you he was injured at the winter classic
Starting point is 00:49:13 he injured his leg ankle forget and he missed like two weeks ish but he's back in the lineup he's had a pretty good season 924 average last two games has been uh pretty good but he's been in and out i don't think that was his only injury 27 games started this year so far when he says so he's played half yeah about right he should be playing more at his fair share of games but yeah i think there's a it's it's weird that demko's on the market because there's definitely an option to hang it hang on to him well because like what's the rush here well i'll go being on the market is an indicator that everything that's not nailed down is going in vancouver but that's They just saw Kuzmenko.
Starting point is 00:49:51 And they just bought him Bavillia. Yeah, none of it makes sense. Well, I think we'll know. If Demko's out the door, then we know. But if he's not, then we still don't know. I don't know what they're doing. I don't know if they've made that choice yet. Right.
Starting point is 00:50:04 But this is the most dangerous place for an NHL team to be. What's the question, Steve? What are you? What are you? And, like, we can't defend is not an identity. and that's currently their identity they can't defend they don't know what they are we can score some goals we have a pretty good goalie when he's healthy we cannot defend at all that's you might think of that as offense first nope your flaw is not supposed to be your identity you know there
Starting point is 00:50:36 are some teams that lean more one way than the other um and it's similar for the islanders we cannot score is not a good identity you know we play uh low event games that that is an identity do you see the difference i do they've went from low event to we can't score if they can get back to simply low event i think they'll be difficult to beat i'm also curious just as on the islanders thing are you guys not curious about this too why do they fire berry trots well and did you see the rumor they could bring them back i didn't see that well because of all the um uh supposedly barry trotz and lou are still they still talk lamb uh trotz is still under contract contract with the islanders and they were on uh one of the worst skids in the nhl we need a new coach
Starting point is 00:51:31 who should we bring in i don't know trotz is available i wonder too that's a i mean that would be it wouldn't be the wildest thing lou's ever done behind the bench like i remember the devils were squarely in the playoffs lou fired the head coach anyway and was like i'm gonna coach now yeah i think that happened in the 90s it's crazy trots and i don't know this but trots to me has the air of a man i guess trying to figure out what he wants to do um at this point or maybe maybe just needs a break i.e paul maurice last year like that kind of way not not like mental health because i want to say that's sort of what maurice that was part of it yeah with trots it's more like he can pick and choose what he wants to do with the rest of his time because like he had
Starting point is 00:52:16 the option to go to winnipeg remember we all thought all something was going to president and he said eh he didn't really want to like if he wants to go into gming like maybe he goes that route like he can just sit back and relax he doesn't have a job right now because he didn't want one and also doesn't need one all right but there are a million jobs if he wants one if he wants to call up anybody because the same 50 guys call up one of his buddies and he have a job tomorrow he wouldn't be the first guy to take like a two three year hiatus from coaching and come back and he's fine oh yeah how long was daryl sutter not a coach for like it was a long time people kind of forget that yeah it's a long time yeah because he got into management and then he got
Starting point is 00:52:55 fired and then he just like sort of farmed for a while i think yeah and then he decided yeah you know what i'm gonna be a head coach in the national hockey league that's that is a free man yep i just decide whoop decide sorry i should have put the uh mixer that don't worry about it uh just decide when when uh i get to be a coach in the best hockey league in the world that's just not about Hey, not, not, uh, no, not bad at all. Not bad at all. Think you know which way it's going to go? Make your bet at Sports Interaction.

Starting point is 00:54:31 switching back to the toronto maple leafs uh just in terms of trade deadline this is the game before um the all-star break and by actually by the time you're listening to the show So the game will either have already happened or it ended with. Yeah, it'd be second period. We'll be in the second period right now. Marchand is going to score in the first minute, and my mentions are going to be hell. It's going to be great.
Starting point is 00:54:53 They're probably already hell. I haven't looked. Just check and see if you put Minute Madness on that. You could bet the first minute of the game. By the way, if you want to download the app for Sports Interaction, it's on the QR code here. Anthony Petrelli says the Leafs have three approaches that they could take, and I want to know which one you think is the most likely, okay?
Starting point is 00:55:10 Three approaches for what? for how the Leafs go into the trade deadline. Sorry, I should have said that part. Now, these are the only three approaches for a playoff team. Steve's mentions are going crazy, so he's not listening. Just leave it.
Starting point is 00:55:23 It's okay. It's full of people saying very nice things. I'm sure it is. This is why I was like, don't look at your phone. So the Leafs have three approaches, and I want to know, if you're Kyle Dubas, Jesse, and Steve,
Starting point is 00:55:36 what approach do you take? There is the home run swing. So there's the Ryan O'Reilly, the Timo Meier that, you know, until yesterday, Bo Horvath, whatever you want. There is the happy medium option, which is maybe like, okay, maybe like a Gavrikov or something like that. Okay. Well, I don't think there's any happy medium. What? Fuck him.
Starting point is 00:55:59 Fuck Gavrikov. I don't understand the need for Gavrikov. I don't get it. You know what? Here's one Anthony mentions. Jonathan Tate. Jonathan Tate. might cost you a second and a third or a third depending on cap retention okay jonathan tase if
Starting point is 00:56:14 let's say he's your medium option and then your conservative shore up the bottom six option which is what they did a lot of last year what they did get giordano but you know they also got like um who was the guy colin who was blackwell oh yeah and you know guys that you said alia labushkin yeah exactly that what you know where the leafs are and you know they're a good team and they're currently uh i have the standings up here third in the conference holy shit wow they are also third in the league holy shit wow the devils are about to pass them no fuck the devils oh what i'm saying fuck everyone i'm just kidding i'm kidding i love the devils you know that um but the leafs are you know they're third in the league right now as of this
Starting point is 00:56:57 uh but you know that caroline and boston are ahead of you the top four teams in the nhl currently are in the eastern conference what avenue do you take if you're kyle dubas understanding too that a first round pick they don't have their second they have a third and of course everybody's calling about matthew nyes and of course the leafs don't want to trade him i know so do you go for the home run do you go for the ah okay somebody who can slot in and give you callie yarn croak minutes or do you go for let's nibble around the edge and wait till next year when this boston team has retired oh my god yeah this is the thing man like i don't think the leafs window is closing it isn't it's just opening i think i mean last three years
Starting point is 00:57:44 wish i mean they haven't won a playoff series so you can't say they've you know started climbing through it or anything they've just gotten closer to winning a playoff series which is no comfort uh to anybody i just have such a hard time committing like listen if you want one of those big swings you got to say goodbye to matthew nice and this fan base just doesn't want to do it so let me ask you this though if that's the case the aisles gave up a guy who's okay for bo horvat in terms of uh ati ratu yeah okay yeah ati ratu is okay yeah matthew nice is a bona fide can't miss holy shit this guy's gonna be great why though what at least that's how he's rated around the league all right why is it that the leafs have to give up matthew nice because
Starting point is 00:58:37 they didn't have to they don't got really anything else i think dubas has drafted wonderfully he has in recent memory and it might be your instinct to okay because you've drafted so well trade those guys no that is going to be your strength going forward the the big thing that this team has missed people always talk about the salaries and matthew's high salary really good player marner high salary really good player tavaris high salary maybe overpaid really good player nylander underpaid underpaid and you only get one more year of that right they've been able to go out and find like the league minimum guys they have not had a crop they they've they've had like one happening yawns in a little bit they haven't had a crop of dudes come in on their elc and wreck
Starting point is 00:59:32 shop on their elc for three years three years of elc imagine what this team could do with a crop coming in of, let's say Hirvonen comes in and he's able to replace a Kerfoot. Let's say Nyes comes in and he's able to fill one of the many holes you're going to have on left wing. Let's say Fraser Minton,
Starting point is 00:59:55 who the team really likes, is able to come in. Look at what Pontus Holmberg's done. Look at what Pontus Holmberg has done. And Topi Niemela, all the goalies, like all of a sudden, Leaf fans are starting to talk about, oh, they got Woll, they got Shelgren.
Starting point is 01:00:08 There's at least three kids over in Europe. If you hit on one of them, it's going to look good. It's going to sound like the coward's way out. I'd be down to give up a draft pick. I think if you have so much confidence in how you draft players and you have so much confidence in the players that you've drafted, you keep them. You keep them and you keep the party going for years to come.
Starting point is 01:00:38 this is why i'm not convinced that matthew nye's must be traded for them to make a big swing though that vancouver trade proved it i well like i was trying to think of what the leafs equivalent of the horvat trade is and i'm struggling with it but it's probably a well the protected first which is already not it's already not as valuable they probably give you an unprotected first because i don't think the leafs are worried about that well then what's that well it's the first round pick this year yeah it's unprotected so that's already better than what the canucks gave or got yeah but it probably doesn't end up that way yeah it's not gonna be as high as yeah and then you're looking at is fraser mitten a decent comparable for ati ratu
Starting point is 01:01:24 yeah maybe second round pick and then bouvillier like who is even a comparable for but yeah kerfoot i guess so you're giving up a first mitten and kerfoot for what meyer i guess o'reilly i don't think that gets it done i might be able to stomach that but yeah it probably doesn't get it done if if i'm any other team and you're the leafs you come to me and you give me your islanders equivalent the the unpredictability of that first round pick for the islanders is what i what i think is really appealing for me if you're the canucks you have two jobs if you're the canucks make that trade and uh hope for the islanders inevitable demise kerf it's also 28 so he's 28 yeah so it's not a great comparable then so like who is it
Starting point is 01:02:18 who is it like who do they have in the 25 26 range it would be joey anderson holmberg was 23 no like marner's 25 that's that's what you're talking about engvall is 26 engvall maybe i guess yeah engvall there it is 2.25 that's about right yeah he's a useful player man useful player so yeah i mean i would rather keep i'd rather retain engvall and and trade kerfoot but kerfoot's on an expiring deal i get it i get it i think dude the idea of listen i get it i get it going into the playoffs this year and i understand that blinding you because you can only focus on this year they're gonna be good this year like they're gonna give whoever they play a hard time no matter what unless everybody gets hurt obviously but what if you keep nice
Starting point is 01:03:12 what if you keep mitten what if you keep you know nimala what if you keep your goalies was i probably like we're forgetting nick robertson exists yeah and that's a big wild card because of injury we just don't know there's rodion amirov who's a huge wild card because of illness they the leafs have this really interesting crop that could prop them up for years prop them up and help them contend for years line mates and teammates of austin matthews and Mitch Marner for years or you blow it all out the window and you try to do it again are you shortchanging Matthews and
Starting point is 01:03:54 Marner in their prime and Tavares at the end of his prime by not going out and spending like that that is a decent argument yeah and I don't and I again I will stick to it I because of because of the Horvat trade I'm now not convinced they're gonna have to trade Matthew Nyes but we do know that the first round
Starting point is 01:04:12 pick which are not thrilled about trading either because they don't have a second round pick will have to go and then one of the guys you mentioned outside of nice yeah you better trade that first round pick it doesn't make sense like that you should you should always trade the way you're looking at it steve is you can always say that though you can always say oh you know if the next guys come up the window could keep going no there's a reason to say it you do you have a reason to say eventually like every year has got to be the year every year has to be the year to win the cup you have austin matthews mitch martyr william neither and john
Starting point is 01:04:43 Tavares how can you not go for it every Single year fuck You would sacrifice one of those Years and say you know what let's not Fully go for it right now and try And do it next year and the next year You can be like okay let's not fully go for it right now You sound like you sound like Ken Holland
Starting point is 01:04:59 Oh no Well I don't want to do that Connor McDavid every year is the year Except for if you're Ken Holland This is that family guy bit now I want to go to war I was the first one who wanted to go to war I was the first one who wanted to trade knives i don't think uh any deal that they want to get done will require matthew knives in the end
Starting point is 01:05:18 like i i think people are a little hysteric there's a little bit of hysteria over oh we're gonna lose matthew when no deal is probably gonna require matthew nice i think he can make the team now yeah so i think he i think that's what they're planning so i i agree with you adam that it's probably not gonna end up being that but you need to send out your first round pick you need to send out maybe your b level prospect to just add at a center i'm not terribly worried about picks just because they're they have no value um unless you do well with them right and at best a 26 overall pick or whatever it would be is gonna develop and be in the league in like two three years and he's just gonna trade down anyway yeah that's true he's just gonna trade it down you don't you
Starting point is 01:06:01 don't need that you didn't ask that now so it doesn't really matter so i want to say this i want to ask you guys this because you guys called me out on some shit on monday about jonathan tase And I was like, I don't know about Tays, I don't know about Tays Wrong about Tays It's got the highest face-off winning percentage in the league right now To the Leafs? Yeah, and I wonder, listen I did a little more research
Starting point is 01:06:21 If it's between Ryan O'Reilly and Jonathan Tays I want Jonathan Tays Really? I'm surprised by that I like the face-offs Remember, Jonathan Tays when he was leading the Blackhawks to a cup Had to be the number one center Yes Can you imagine what he alleviates for the Leafs
Starting point is 01:06:37 If he takes over for David Kemp if he takes over for David Camp and David Camp's your fourth line center. That is a pretty spectacular middle and it allows Matthews to be more of Matthews. Tavares is already
Starting point is 01:06:48 defensively responsible. Matthews is too. But when you have a defensive zone face-off and it's the end of the game and it's Tampa Bay or it's Boston and it's game seven,
Starting point is 01:07:00 you can send out... So what can't Ryan O'Reilly do? Why couldn't Ryan O'Reilly do the same thing? I just... The guy's coming off a broken foot. tase is having a good year um on a shit team i'm just the only thing i don't have a problem with
Starting point is 01:07:14 ryan o'reilly i think he's spectacular in the playoffs spectacular in the regular season hard nose tough i think he'd be amazing here we would love him as a leaf tell you what but a recent injury like that scares me yeah that's the only thing i'm gonna say i get broken foot who's broken a foot you guys are broken a bone uh yeah in my face oh yeah yeah not my foot okay that's different jesse have you broken a bone yeah i broke my wrist how long did that different but how long did it take to heal oh gosh and feel normal like four to six months or something like half a year and you're an athlete but i broke it playing football yeah there you go oh it was in practice really yeah i was like i was like 12 oh i got tackled from behind i just didn't know how to
Starting point is 01:07:51 fall properly land on my wrist so understanding that athletes have different pain tolerances and they can and they have painkillers and all the other things that go into it a broken foot scares me because that's your mobility and like and that's a that's a that's a thing he's not playing right now like we're all talking about training for ryan o'reilly he's still out he's on ir that's why i'm thinking tase might be a really good one because it is technically according to anthony petrelli's you know uh thing and i really love his articles yeah it's a middle of the road option where it doesn't cost you an absolute fortune but i look at the leafs and i go okay they could use a team o'meara but which team can't and new jersey apparently supposed to
Starting point is 01:08:26 be super hot on him and really willing to get him tyler myers and tyler tyler myers but i i i'm curious about how much how much of the leafs really lacking up front i mean and how much are they really lacking on defense they're lacking on left wing and i'll tell you why uh sheldon keith isn't even 100 sold on michael bunting as your first line left wing because in certain situations especially defensively pulls him out he pulls him out who does he put up aston reese like all respect so they're gonna get a left winger then they need one they need one engvall plays his best hockey on the right so i'm not even talking about him there uh you hope nize can work but you don't know you don't know kerfoot is a big
Starting point is 01:09:17 jump to the nhl difficult to read i just don't think this team is at their best when he's a center so i would count him as a left i guess i think a center solves your left your wingers issue because centers that way no and also once you have the big three up the middle then you have all these plug and play options on your wings man matthews taves or matthews tavaris taves is that is some fantasy shit matthews tavaris o'reilly like they're all things that seemed completely impossible a few years ago. We had Cawdry.
Starting point is 01:09:54 The Leafs had an awesome Cawdry. No, but just... He blew it. Just those three names. Throw those three names in. Let's not pretend Cawdry is the same echelon as those two. He has his cup.
Starting point is 01:10:09 Dude, he has not been a first-line center. He's trying. He is trying. I'm still trying, too. still trying like he hasn't been a consistent first line center yeah except for in injury situations whereas o'reilly and taves have done that okay what do you mean okay okay let's not dude seeing seeing on paper matthews tavaris taves that doesn't do something to you that's excellent that's porn i'll take that every day that's hockey porn yeah and the matthews tavaris
Starting point is 01:10:45 o'reilly that is that's hot shit that is video game the defenseman situation i feel like it's it's good like there's no problem they have seven defensemen right now what's what's the issue why do we need to go get why do the leafs need to go get a defenseman it's fine only thing i'd like to see the leafs do on the back end is if they could improve which means take a guy out yeah deal one of them and swap it and add an asset and upgrade that position i don't mind that either because like i mean geez you can't have 13 defensemen right like you you gotta rely on if there's injuries you can use a jordy ben you can use a connor timmons you can use a victor mate when he's better but what like with the way lilligran's been playing lately i feel like they've solved a
Starting point is 01:11:29 lot of issues like sandy and lilligran is great geo hall great riley if he can brody if riley can just play a little better brody's always gonna be solid but they're not looking the best together but like there's six guys you're not gonna take the thing you're not you're not taking riley brody have a lineup like it's not happening the only thing i would do or i would like an extended look at is riley lilligran uh sandy and brody brody on the right sandy can't do it but i don't think riley plays well with anybody who's not named tj brody dude he's got to pick it up i think that's the only partner he has right now so you got to pair them together and then the other two are solved so let's go get a freaking forward get a winger get a center and if you can improve on
Starting point is 01:12:13 Justin Hall, I think you should make that attempt. No. Justin Hall is great when he plays great and bad when he plays bad. Can I ask? He's good. Yeah, but like, Hall on a bad night costs you a game. What do you know about? And in the playoffs,
Starting point is 01:12:28 you just can't afford it. That was not a pick. I wasn't referring to that. It was not a pick. It was a Wes McCauley. What? Can I ask? Wes McCauley didn't make that call. He didn't? He did. He did, yeah. Or was it Eric Furlatt? Oh, it was Eric. He was in the game. He's in the game. Yeah, I got that wrong.
Starting point is 01:12:43 My honest question here. What do you know about Vladislav Grabov? I remember he was Columbus's like seventh D in the bubble series. I don't know what has happened over the last two years that made him a first round pick. I don't understand how he could potentially be worth a first and a third. Jarmo Kekulainen is really good. He's working the insiders right now. Well, he's really good at driving the price up on his guys.
Starting point is 01:13:10 We know that. We do know that. He's really good at driving the price up on his guys. He didn't get a great return for Bjorkstrand, but he also got completely out from under the cap, which we know for the Blue Jackets is a big deal. Got a King's Ransom for Foligno. One thing I do think works for Dubas is all the sellers,
Starting point is 01:13:30 we know the Blue Jackets are a seller, we know the Blackhawks are a seller, we think the Blues are a seller. We're not totally sure. All the GMs trade with like six guys. Those are three of his guys He speaks to all of them I think that's a great thing
Starting point is 01:13:46 I think that's advantageous for the Leafs One guy I think the Leafs ought to look at And this is a guy Freed has been talking about a lot Is Sam Lafferty He's had a good season If you're talking about a depth option He's done really well on a shit team And he signed for another year at $1.15 million
Starting point is 01:14:02 Here's an idea If you're a team If you're the Leafs, if you're anyone else Go get him and Taves in the same deal yeah why not there you go there you go if you need help up front there you go one two boom and you always need defenseman always need defense uh no he's not a defenseman though lafferty is he not oh shit okay i thought he was he's uh he is a famed if you're right now going where do i know sam lafferty from he is one of the many buzz flibbets and mark donks the penguins have had
Starting point is 01:14:33 over the years like the center i'm a knob what the hell was that all right because maybe because He's coming off of Gavrikov. Maybe that's what it was. Oh, yeah. There you go. No, he's one of their many buzz flibbets and mark donks. And look at him, making over a million bucks. Not a boy.
Starting point is 01:14:48 We want to tell you again about Hockey Helps the Homeless. We got our mitts on. Just, I don't know what you guys are doing with your hands right now. We're wearing the Hockey Helps the Homeless mittens, which are actually really comfortable. They're also looking for volunteers. Starting point is 01:15:29 You can also email Emma, Emma Langlois, who we love, emma at hhth.com for more information register your team right now hockeyhelpsthehomeless.com the flames the flames have an arena and it's called the scotia bank saddle cool okay the calgary hitman tonight will play against the regina pats at the scotia bank saddle dome conor bedard's team that's right capacity is at 19 289 of course the report right now as of actually six hours ago from scott wheeler is that it is sold out you're kidding for a whl game watch him not play ryan pike who is a reporter at flames nation also talks a lot on uh sports that's 960 really great guy and a great reporter
Starting point is 01:16:23 he retweeted scott and said the flames have only had three sellouts this season like the big club the big club holy shit but you know what if you're if you live in regina or you can attend a whl game when the pats come to town you go wow you go you must go that's wild now it's much more affordable to go to a whl game than it is an nhl game dude it's difficult to convince 19 000 people just let's say the tickets are 20 you're convincing 19 000 people to spend 20 on one thing that's extraordinarily difficult to do and it's like probably more than that because food and parking and looks like the tickets were 16 to 31 so 16 but let's say 21 is the average times 19 500 equals that's about that's 425 000 or
Starting point is 01:17:28 something like that these kids make like 250 per diem yeah so he's making money for the whl right now big that's wild wild wild is it a teddy bear toss game i don't know because i know the hitman have uh really uh their fans have showed up for that in years past holy smokes is that nuts it's a crazy thing wow it's a crazy stat um there are one three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven twelve thirteen fourteen fifteen sixteen seventeen single seats left by him in the whole stadium that's it i'm taking nesta right now you can buy 17 single tickets and that's the only seats around the entire arena that was wild they're 30 uh these tickets um holy crazy right whl game pretty cool that's crazy pretty pretty cool um i thought you would find this interesting
Starting point is 01:18:28 wow okay um edmonton talking about trade deadline and because what we're i'm still not seeing a whole lot of crystallizing we know like new jersey they want timo meyer boston's always a wild card for me because they always go out and get the person of the deadline. They always do it. I thought they were going to get Horvat. I thought, you know, he felt like a Bruin, didn't he? Charlie Coyle. Watch it with Timo Mayer.
Starting point is 01:18:54 Oh, that'd be perfect, too. He would be a perfect Bruin. Gavrikov, too, because his contract's only like two-something, right? And you could get Columbus to retain, although Jarmo would charge you like a fourth for that. Mayer's just a good fit. Edmonton. A lot of talk
Starting point is 01:19:10 between edmonton and arizona uh who what names can you think of jacqueline jacqueline what about another one the arizona the melka no interestingly enough not the melka that's what i would have guessed i'm trying to think of who else they have nick ritchie another nick another nick who do they have nick bustad is the name he's on the coyotes yeah oh i did not know uh and it's only a nine hundred thousand dollar cap hit so pretty easy 10 even strength goals and then and then um the other person they're supposedly asking for outside of chikrin is a guy that we didn't we weren't sure was going to play again this year and that's shane austin oh yeah which would fit with the oilers we don't play defense you have tyson berry who's having a pretty good season by
Starting point is 01:20:03 the way yeah he's of course he's played well in edmonton there are two guys who got to run your power play and they'll put up points there it's believed that they are asking now do you just make peace with the fact that you're never just going to be a team of defensive stalwarts and you just work on moving the shit out of that puck that might be the move probably be easier to just strengthen a strength right they went out and got a vander kane last year they strengthened into strength and look at them they double down on what you are three rounds deep you know what i don't hate it uh and i'm already developing the trade in my head because you could do like bukestad and goss despair and you sweeten it with pulley rv and something because you're gonna have
Starting point is 01:20:45 to move money out that would cost like a second or a third rounder so i would imagine goss despair costs nothing and then you got bukestad for a second or a third rounder and then you throw employee rv you can actually why goss despair is having a great year and he's been playing really well i don't know why he would cost nothing i think because of this salary cap hit which is over is it expires this year oh he's a ufa 4.5 million if you're if you're the coyotes you retain 50 because your salary gap doesn't matter so which is why you take pulley harvey right and you take the chance that he might be all right and then you get some assets for uh ghost bear i think we're we're fleshing out the trade right here if i'm edmonton i don't want that
Starting point is 01:21:22 but i feel like if you're arizona that's an asset you could definitely get something out of yeah yep now um i want to switch to the business side for a second here and i know we have there's a lot to cover there's a lot going on expect the shows to be a bit longer because it's trade deadline and all star and all this shit a couple more things that we have to hit before i have drake write a song about steve uh and that is a real thing we're getting to um commissioner gary betman is expected to address in his media address saturday something about bally slash diamond sports potential bankruptcy if you haven't heard about this the nhl the nba and mlb are all affected by this uh bally which used to be fox sports um uh apparently um holds
Starting point is 01:22:10 uh 55 billion dollars in sports media rights and is prepared to skip a 140 million dollar interest payment next month and the big question will be prepared and i'm quoting i'm prepared to do that too yeah well that's that's where you start to get into bankruptcy right yeah so in 2020 disney bought fox and or previously that disney bought fox and a part of the disney purchase of fox was that fox would sell off all of their sports channels so all of the fox fox sports channels and bally who wanted to get into the rights business bought up all of these uh tv and i believe bally is like the gym ballet right is it not uh the betting thing oh the bet oh okay well uh the question is according to freach where does that take us uh bally's broadcast
Starting point is 01:22:54 anaheim arizona carolina columbus dallas detroit florida la minnesota nashville st louis and tampa bay a lot of unanswered questions the first of them being in st claire broadcasting is the owner will st claire try to cut back payments or cut contracts uh outright under bankruptcy if so what could that mean for payments to teams as an extension of that what can that mean to the salary cap valley's owned by st claire yeah and st claire has got its own things um but but here's the problem if you're looking at nba mlb and nhl and you have to cut rights who you cut you're cutting the nhl because the nhl has not made itself the sport that the other two have and viewership is down a couple of sources according to frege yes and i was going to get
Starting point is 01:23:40 to that indicate there isn't a clear answer to those questions but the affected teams are prepared for the possibility of some financial pain. We all knew that the cord cutting would push teams closer to streaming plans. We're moving closer to that, but the worry has always been if streaming your own content will make rights-free money. MLB in particular did big business off the regional television model because it's a big summer sport and there aren't a lot of sports in the summer. Fill up hours and hours of programming when there's not a lot of competition. And one exec said, this is the biggest sports story that nobody is paying attention to. And let me throw this out there.
Starting point is 01:24:15 We had a conversation about blackouts on our last Agent Provocateur with Alan Walsh. And Alan comes right out and says, as you would imagine he does, because he doesn't really mince words, Jesse. He talks about the fact that the NHL has been held back by this, we have to have regional games and we have to have blackouts. People were complaining about it at the Kingston get together because they're like- They can't watch the Leafs in Kingston. Yeah, because they're halfway between Toronto and Ottawa, so they're stuck in this weird gray zone.
Starting point is 01:24:44 And sometimes they can't watch Sens games. They can't watch Sens games. Or Canadians games. And what's crazy about it is you look at the MLS, and the MLS is, I don't know, Sport 11 in North America. But what they did that was really smart is they said, we're going to Apple TV. All of it. There is no such thing as regional. It's all going to Apple TV.
Starting point is 01:25:02 And Apple can sell ads against it. But you have to have a subscription to Apple TV and you watch. And you look at what Amazon has done with Thursday Night Football. and given Amazon got the shittiest games this year, all the Thursday night games suck. But this is where the NHL is going to go because they're going to have to. Regional sports on cable doesn't work anymore
Starting point is 01:25:24 because it's so expensive to run. And the reality of the situation is it limits your audience. Just make it easy. Just make them all national. Just make it easy. Just make them all national games. It's all you need to do. But the NHL won't do that
Starting point is 01:25:37 because they insist on selling A package and B package and then regional. How about no package? How about I just don't watch? Well, and that's... Don't make it difficult for people. That's what is the problem
Starting point is 01:25:47 is now that... Good Lord. Apparently, depending upon who you ask, the ratings are down in some markets, a lot of markets. 22%.
Starting point is 01:25:54 Yeah, I was going to say 5 to 10 and then, yeah, some of the more aggressive. 22%. And that's because people don't have cable anymore. And it's not like those people aren't still watching.
Starting point is 01:26:04 This is the important part. What do you do? army to you sail the seven seas and you know what ratings don't account for that because you're literally ripping off the stream i don't blame you but it's one of those things i do but but the reality of the situation is for legal purposes when the when the apps you're supposed to watch on don't work when you're supposed to have you know some of these don't even offer an online stream you imagine a market like tampa going into the playoffs and they don't have st clair posting their games where do you watch like the team that's been in the finals three
Starting point is 01:26:42 years in a row what are you gonna do where do you watch the thing well i'm sure i'm sure the nhl will call tnt and they'll call turner they'll call espn and they'll be like hey can you guys pick up these games and they'll do it but it's one of those things where we should not be in this position in 2023 at a certain point this isn't going all stream it has to a lot of this onus has got to be on bally sports too for completely misjudging the market here because they overpaid for all of those fox sports stations and then they couldn't recoup the money because their business model grew outdated from 2020 to 2023 in this little small window we got here their entire business blew up and all they did was burn cash i saw this coming in 2008 yeah
Starting point is 01:27:26 The sports rights fees that they had to pay back to these teams to own the rights into these organizations, they're so far through the roof that they could never make money back, and that's why they're bankrupt here. was always the obvious evolution of things and people fought against it tooth and nail for years and no matter how hard you fight against change here it is and you're completely unprepared because you've been fighting it this entire time instead of embracing it i got no sympathy for these companies i feel terrible for their workers who are all gonna get laid off or for the fans that can't watch their own damn team can't watch a fucking game they'll find a solution to this they will but think of all those teams i just named some of those are major market teams some of them are small market teams and the small market teams you got to worry about because that
Starting point is 01:28:17 is where they make their money yeah the rights deals and they're and now they have to suffer pain because the nhl's got a dated model of how it delivers its own content and this goes back to what we've talked about before people on twitter bringing this up the best way i've ever seen it put is the guys that run the league don't watch hockey i mean what other conclusion are you supposed to come to here's the game here's the link watch it why on a net why in the in in the internet age can i like for instance in canada and i and i'm just gonna i'll just leave this without comment yeah if i log on to the sports net app but it's a tsn game i can see on the sports net app that regional blackouts apply why on the sports net app can i not still click on it but
Starting point is 01:29:07 it's a tsnp i don't know i don't know enough about it i don't either and that's not me passing the buck no no i know i know but i'm just i'm not trying to make anyone uncomfortable here but it's like just let me watch you know why because i don't watch i don't i'm their worst nightmare because i don't try to get around it i try to watch something and if it doesn't work i watch something else it's 2023 i'm not working for you i like don't 2023 is not the year uh where you play hard to get with customers here's the link there's too much else click it like tiktok knows with eerie accuracy where i live you know what i mean and it curates my feed to that is there is there a lot of ajax content on there you bet you can do that with ads yeah you've been able
Starting point is 01:29:54 to do that with ads for years oh no but we got to do this regional thing no you don't you fucking idiot stop no we're not going to stop okay well then die and now it's dying and none of us should be surprised or feel bad well i do feel bad for the fans and i do feel bad for the teams that sucks yeah i feel bad for the fans and here's for the teams it always affects you here's how it affects you if you're a toronto maple leafs fan or an anybody fan it could affect the cap yep hockey related revenues will go down if valley goes down meaning that the cap next year will not be as high as it should be which means free agency is less fun gary's addressing it i bet it's good news well i don't think i don't know if like i'm sure i honestly believe that
Starting point is 01:30:40 gary's gonna find a solution on this one he has to his mandate it's a mandate oh my god yeah it's pretty wild that we live in that in that way it's it's sort of like just give people access and they'll they'll buy it right yep generally speaking people are honest and they're just like hey where do i find this now the next thing that's going to happen that's very interesting is the nhlpa is going to hold an executive board meeting during all-star weekend 32 representatives not all will be in florida some will be online but those players uh were asked to make themselves available uh freach says he's like he's not sure if there's going to be a vote or an announcement on the new executive director but he said we're getting close to the end of this process if you
Starting point is 01:31:19 remember they said they were going to have one by last summer and they didn't they didn't have one by last summer the nhlpa the nhlpa said they were going to have a new leader last summer they didn't get it under the leadership of buffalo's kyle akpozo the search committee's done a great job of keeping things secret and you're right because he hasn't heard anything you haven't heard anything about it it sounds like we're down to the last two or three candidates as mentioned one is believed to be a former player agent and Vancouver GM Mike Gillis uh uh Freed said I had heard there was an external candidate possibly someone with a career in the American political world but that's been disputed so admittedly I don't know what to make of that could be a misdirection it hasn't been
Starting point is 01:31:59 easy to gather information now that wouldn't be uh abnormal the last two guys that have come in um I believe I don't believe Bob Goodenow was associated with hockey maybe he was before no he was an agent and then donald fear uh came uh was part of baseball for a long long time was part of their player union so it could be somebody from a different sport you don't know yeah he was with baseball before he um just started collecting his salary does anyone do anything well i think if i'm the pa what the fuck if i'm the pa this is the guy that's leading me into the next lockout oh great so you want to take your time and find it you really man i'm getting shit on by thousands of people from across the world and this is so much more depressing it is well i
Starting point is 01:32:45 know i don't want to make it depressing but that's if you look at gary betman's negotiation tactic he starts with the lockout and then you negotiate yeah every time where they're the only time there hasn't been a labor stoppage is when there was a labor stoppage because of a pandemic and they extended the deal right so right uh and and that side both times both both sides wanted that to happen they wanted to get get through it so to me the last few times that i've seen gary batman's gone we're locking you out and we're not paying you and we're just gonna let you suffer until you buckle and each time the players union has buckled a little so this time i feel like smartly they're taking their time and they're gonna figure this out and hopefully they select somebody who's strong
Starting point is 01:33:30 and a little more vocal because when was after Kyle Beach I have not seen or heard from Don Fear you didn't really hear from him during
Starting point is 01:33:38 no except for the fact that he had to be heard from because people were like why didn't you do more so okay
Starting point is 01:33:45 what you're giving is optimism I think I think we ought to be optimistic sounds like they're close to a candidate maybe
Starting point is 01:33:54 maybe it'd be difficult for that candidate to be worse than the current guy mm-hmm they'll try i bet but it'll be difficult maybe it'll be better for the players it'll be better for the fans and maybe just maybe we'll avoid another lockout i like that
Starting point is 01:34:18 i'm hoping so sure got a business plan tied to it yeah holy shit yeah red dead pm yeah absolutely um jesse i sent you something that is extremely stupid but i wanted you to know that you've seen this chat gp this chat ai stuff that that has been taken off these artificial intelligence not really okay well these chat bots or whatever they're supposedly going to become sentient in the next five to seven years and probably take over but until then we should enjoy the ride and this one is fun because you can put in any name or any word or any sentence and it spits out a drake song okay but it's all royalty free so we can actually play it so i thought are you serious yeah so i thought it might be fun to play to put
Starting point is 01:35:04 a to create a steve dangle drake song have you guys heard this well it's it's it spits out something new every single time it's just making it now it just makes it up put on your glasses so you can see so yeah you don't know if it's fire or not no is it fire it's making it yeah we'd have to type in Steve Dangle write in Steve Dangle and then why is the picture Drake with a Terminator eye oh cause it's just AI
Starting point is 01:35:29 okay so it's going to create a Steve Dangle song generate and it will come up with lyrics and stuff too that are all completely unique and you can do this over and over and over again okay generate and I've always wanted to know what a Steve Dangle Drake song might sound like
Starting point is 01:35:47 warming up it says lyrics processing that he makes too much music it's hard to keep up can i just say it oh yeah man that new drink album and i'm like i am eight albums behind bro like you make too much shit bless you for the hustle and everything like how many albums does he have oh it's a lot i asked uh i remember asking jacks my co-host on the morning show like you went to a drake concert how did he get all his hits in and she said he had to play montages of them like you to go from song to song to song like a minute at a time that's wild yes why like you can go to a concert you cry screams when he told they can't get a no he's the man of that hour living his best life
Starting point is 01:36:41 that's it no it's it it only does like 30 seconds they can't get a no he's the man of that hour living his best life It's Step Dangle He's gonna sit and dance For the fans tonight Step Dangle in the house You cry screams when he talk Screams when he talks
Starting point is 01:37:13 They can't get a no He's the man of the hour Living his best life It's just the 23 version of that He's gonna sit and dance For the fans tonight Step Dangle in the house You cry screams when he talk
Starting point is 01:37:28 Should we make a Jesse Blake song? They can't get a no he's the man out there all right let's try out a more no let's do a jesse blake no how long is this episode bro it were an hour 50 whatever you're not going home way you're an hour you're not going home anyway that's true you're going to leave game tonight though he's not going oh you're not gonna leave game where are you going tonight i'm going uh please oh you're going a place yeah for some reason okay all right let's do a jesse blake or is it me it's uh processing it takes a little bit of process by the way i like the uh that was good that wasn't that good
Starting point is 01:38:03 it's a lot better than you think it would be he's the hockey dude yeah i like that that's funny does it say he's the hockey dude that's the lyrics yeah steph sangle so he's the hockey dude so apparently it scrapes the internet the man of the hour for keywords and stuff associated too which is kind of neat that's not a bad song no my boss just texted me like having fun that's basically all my oh brad marchand yeah people are checking on me like you're right i'm like brad marchand tweeted a picture of me it's cool it's pretty cool yeah pretty cool there i i mean i watched him score a gold medal winning oh here we go i'm running and racing my head is pacing i'm gonna make it on my own
Starting point is 01:38:44 long roads and time of racing my head is pacing i'm gonna make it on my own long roads and time of my feelings you spent a long time never knew it'd be hard to be alone i'm searching for them is he love me or is he in love with me let's do a jesse blake one come on in love with you oh my god he's uh can we do it or do you want to do a gary betman what do you guys want to do who do Let's do somebody like legit famous. Let's do Brad Marchand.
Starting point is 01:39:35 Okay. Can we do Brad Marchand? Brad Marchand. Steve's not paying attention. No, yeah, we can do Brad. I think we've reached our limit with Steve. Almost two hours. Have we lost him?
Starting point is 01:39:46 We've lost him. Okay. We'll do a question. We'll generate Brad Marchand. We got to finish our Bachelor bios. Oh, yeah. Okay. Friday.
Starting point is 01:39:53 Friday. Friday. Friday. Friday. Friday. It's 22% on the Brad Marchand. okay all right all right all right all right song is called roar by the way the episode title should be mighty roar yes that's good for seo purposes
Starting point is 01:40:31 it's going down the ice gotta hustle and fight i'm feeling the rush gotta do it tonight brad marshand he a real one he don't back down for nothing That's pretty good. That was all right. How's this one, Subwoofer Guy? I like those lyrics. It's pretty good. Anyway, I wanted to show you guys Drake AI.
Starting point is 01:41:06 Drake AI. Not bad. It's fun, right? It does a decent job for a computer. Exactly. but sometimes it's like it generates the lyrics perfectly but then drake pronouncing some of the words is not great he couldn't say adam wilde or stev yeah you can say steve
Starting point is 01:41:20 like you'd think the ai would know the word steve and not stev well more like ai but the a is ass ass intelligence ass intelligence shall we wrap it up i think Can we name the show Ass Intelligence? No, we can't. It's the show after Four Horvath, right? Isn't it? That's got to be it. Ass Intelligence.
Starting point is 01:41:43 No, we already did that. Oh, wait. No, we did the show before. No, I think we got to do Mighty Roar. All right. Ass Intelligence. Ass Intelligence. Mighty Roar slash Ass Intelligence.
