Big Eddie.
The Steve Dangle podcast with your host, Steve Dangle, Adam Wilde, and Jesse Blake.
Feels good.
Everybody had a great August.
Yes.
And here we are.
First 30 seconds of the show, we already got to promote something.
But it's a live show.
It's a live show.
That's good.
And we've already been promoting it.
If you were listening at the end of July, you sickos, you would know that the course in Clubhouse,
which is our St. Catherine's Home,
which we do every single September.
September 26th, it's a Saturday this year.
And of course, they've got the 5 HD golf simulators,
and they feature 40 real courses.
And of course, as we always do,
Jesse tries to set the longest drive,
and then we try to have somebody there beat him.
There's been a couple years where Jesse has won,
but last year was not one of them.
Last year was not one of them.
I did get beat.
Because he lost to me!
No, I did not.
Which is, I think, is the point.
You know, we want a winner.
Well, I mean, listen, if you want to be soft like that, sure.
If you don't, I thought you wanted to win.
But I guess it's not much of a competition if you don't want to win it.
Well, I do enjoy winning, but I like the audience getting prizes more.
Well, we can always give those prizes way elsewhere.
Jesse's about to bring one 400 yards.
Yeah.
Now you want me to win.
What I'm saying is Jesse.
I feel like Jesse's less of a man is what I'm saying.
Oh, I agree.
But I think it's a bit hard.
Okay.
Well, I just shouldn't say it out loud.
Is that what you're saying?
Yeah.
Okay, well, tickets are $25 plus tax, $200 available, and it has sold out the past three years.
So doors are at five, live show starts at seven.
And we also have a whole bunch of things going on, including a video game, which used to be, used to be something else.
It is now called Shorzie Legends of the North.
Oh.
Because our good friend Chris, but I don't know if you guys remember this.
Chris was a indie video game maker, and we helped launch his Kickstarter.
I think it was on Kickstarter.
It's one of those services.
You're telling it correctly.
And you guys actually, like you listening, funded this guy.
He got it off the ground and now Shorzie has bought it and made it a part of their IP.
And somehow we're still included in that, which is kind of neat because we all have characters in it.
So you can try out the game.
Jared Kiso personally helped write the story mode script.
Unreal.
Which is so sick.
And it's like four player local shinny mode included.
You can try it out.
The team will be there on the 20.
And it's out on Steam now.
You can check it out and coming soon to a PS5 and Xbox series, SX.
I didn't know that was what series we were on for Xbox, but on the sex series of Xbox.
Launch date announcement coming soon.
So that's pretty cool.
Did you have 360 or PS4 growing up?
Oh.
During that era.
First off, I'm old up to have.
No, that would have been.
I had PS3 against PS3.
Sorry, my bad.
Yeah.
I actually, so I had a PS3 gifted to me because I was a PlayStation 2 kid off of N,
64. I did the switch. And then, um, so it was N64, PS2. And then I got a PS3. And then when I was
old and I was like 22, 23 years old, I was like, I'm going to get an Xbox as well.
Whoa. Oh, I want to play Halo. So I for a while had both. But those Xbox has never lasted.
Remember the red ring of death? Yeah. Oh, yeah. My Xbox, I think, lasted like a year.
And then it was toast. And then I never went back to Xbox again. I had an Xbox 360 that was
completely wasted on the ancient television that I played on, played GTA, five. And then I had a
which I think was released 76 years ago.
Yes.
And now it's being followed up.
Did you know about this?
Have you heard anything about this?
What are we doing here?
Actually, I wanted to know,
do you think that we do a show that day
or do we think we skip the day
that Grand Theft Auto comes out
because it will be a waste?
I think we should cancel shows
and the NHL should cancel games for a month.
You think so?
Just a total...
What's the point?
I mean, that'd be all of December, right?
Because it's late November.
Yeah.
Are you buying it?
Yeah.
Jesse, are you buying it?
Of course.
You are buying it.
That's not even your thing.
No, I like, I played GTA for the first time in, I want to say summer of 22 when I did it on Twitch.
That was the first time I ever played those games because I grew up only playing sports games.
But it's fun.
Okay.
Good time.
All right.
Well, courts and clubhouse come out and see us September 26.
It's always a good time.
And we will have other live shows throughout the year.
Probably limited amounts, though.
And we're going to name them all right now.
No.
Now, I had other ways to start this show, but we had breaking news this morning.
Thank you to the Boston Bruins is something I never say.
But Fraser Minton, former Leaf, seven years, $7.2 million A-AV, not bad for Fraser Minton, who's played.
I still think less than 80 games in the NHL.
Yes.
Here, listen, I know not everything needs to be about the least, but this one is actually a little bit.
and before Bruins fans get all their nann-nanny boo-boos in,
because valid, very valid.
I will commit multiple felonies if the Leafs trade Matthew Nyes.
Oh, because of what he makes?
Under 8 million.
I'll do time.
I will do hard time.
Or you guys prepare financially whatever you got to do.
I'm going back to the zoo.
Fraser Minton.
I'm quitting.
So Matthew and I signed his contract after a 58-point season.
That was last year.
Fraser Mitten has signed his contract after a 35-point season.
One thing I will say about the Trilliving era, the contracts were good.
Imagine how good this one could have been.
The signings were good.
He did keep values down.
Generally.
I mean, listen, but the whole league has changed since.
Yes.
And I'm sure Lane Hudson's looking at like that.
and going, I'm a million dollars more than Fraser Mint?
There was, listen, Habs fans, I'm not going to yuck your yum.
Oh, no, they should enjoy it.
Ivan Demadov had that quote where he was just like, gosh, darn, I just believe so much in what we're,
I'm cynical.
I'm cynical enough that I don't believe you and I don't believe any of your teammates.
I think you all got ripped off and that's fine.
Everyone else is cashing in.
Fraser Mitten, who there's been two deals, I think, over the past week of players who are fetuses in the NHL,
Zeev Bouillon and Fraser Minton.
Jesse, you did the video on Zeev.
Yes.
Neither of those players has done a thing in this league.
Nope.
Both of them.
Both got traded for defensemen.
Yeah.
Equally great defense.
And both of them, I think, will be discounts.
Maybe the day they take the ice with those deals.
Because Minton and Buiam, I don't think they kick until next year.
William doesn't kick until next year.
I don't know about Minton.
I probably looked that up.
It's got to be next year.
That's crazy, right?
That's just where things are heading.
You know, if Minton is a middle six center two C.
By the way, Minton is making less than the rookie max this year.
879 is what he makes.
Crazy.
So yes, you are correct.
As producer Hayden pointed out, what was it?
Fraser Minton is making less than, he's making more than, sorry.
Is it Brock Faber?
Matt Boldy.
Or is it both?
Could be both.
Just boldy?
Whatever.
Fraser Mitten's making more than Matt Boldy.
That's how quickly the landscape has changed.
I can't hate on him.
I can't hate on the Bruins.
You don't hate on Matt Boldy.
for even signing that deal.
That was a hell of a deal when it signed it.
Oh,
yeah.
It's just the way things are going.
I think a lot of players over the next 12 to 24 months are going to give their agent some side eye.
Yeah.
For the previous deals that they signed.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, like, what was the thing?
The thing to get that teams wanted to avoid was term.
Because, you know, what if we're locked into this thing?
and who knows
now teams are
begging
until they wear out
the knees of their pants
to get players
locked up to term.
So I wonder
if some players
were told one thing,
no,
we got to get this,
we got to get this,
we got to get this.
And now it's,
again,
one to two years later
and they're looking around
and they're like,
I'm screwed.
Like we're only a few months
away
from Jack Hughes
being the
lowest paid
Hughes brother. He's not the highest paid Hughes on his team. It's crazy where things are
headed. Yeah. And I think comparing it to the Matthew Nye's contract as you did before, this is how
you get into a situation where the Matthew Nye's contract looks so good. So I defended the
Zeev Bouillon deal because he's 20 years old and like you said, he's done nothing. But he has all
of the stats and the numbers and the projection to be what he should be. And that's a number two
defenseman at that number in a couple of years when he ever grows into that.
contract. And eight years down the line, six years, five years, that contract looks like a
steal because you signed it so early. So with Fraser Minton, of course, it's an overpay right now.
But the way you get to where you're screaming about a Matthew Nye's contract is you sign it now
and you overpay right now. And in a couple of years, it looks fantastic for your second line center.
Because if he tops out a second line center at seven million dollars, that's fine. I think that you're
lucky to get him at seven at a second line center price. A second line center, a second line center. A second line
in the NHL in three years from now will might be just under double digit.
Oh, I think it'll be I think there'll be 12 or 13 million.
Especially because this guy's 22 years old.
Yep.
So think about him in his prime.
So we're talking 24 to 27 age because that's usually an NHL is prime.
And he's your $7 million second line center.
That has fantastic value for the Bruins.
And your job as a general manager is to make bets like this.
You've got to be a little risky.
You can't just sit and wait.
and then he goes out and has a fantastic season
and all of a sudden he wants $9 million.
Well, they also have to make this bet, Jesse,
because they traded the Brandon Carlo for him.
Right.
And like, you know, kind of like the Canucks did.
They traded the Quinn Hughes.
You're forgetting the Leafs recouped two third round picks for that guy.
That's true.
And Jesse and I were there for the draft when they happened.
There's the title for the show, by the way.
Because this is the headline, two third round picks.
I want to remind you guys of something that happened a couple seasons ago
that I think everybody's forgotten.
And Bruins fans would like to forget this because it kicked off a very weird year for them.
Remember when they made Jeremy Swayman hold out the entire training camp because they didn't want to pay them the extra 500 grand per year.
Both sides were about 500 grand apart.
Worked out over an eight-year deal to be worth $4 million total.
That's it.
They made them hold out all of camp and then something happened with spit and shickles or whatever.
And then the Bruins caved gave them the money anyway, but camp had already ended and they had a shit year.
Do you remember that?
We've spent hours of this show
talking about what is basically the price of like a new e-veh
like in cap space.
Yeah.
For multiple teams.
Like it's not just the Bruins.
My God,
the Leafs and the Zachast and Reese saga
and Elya McKeyev taking a discount and ah!
I hope we're done with that.
Except for the ducks who are still profoundly screwed.
So you know what I mean?
So let me ask Jesse,
Steve, this question, I've been wondering about this all offseason.
Okay?
What qualifies now as a bad contract?
Because bad contracts in the past could be great players who are just a little overpaid.
And I think the person that obviously comes to mind the most is Darnel Nurse, who I don't think is overpaid anymore.
And if he is, he won't be next year, right?
It's not by much.
So that is no longer, that contract, even if you think he's overpaid, it's not a bad
contract anymore. There's a difference between bad
contract and overpaid. Back in the day,
Louis Erickson with the Canucks, bad contract,
Jay Beagle with the Canucks, bad contract,
Antoine Roussel with the Canucks,
bad contract. And here's the problem with them.
They all, they're on the same team at the same time.
And you add Oliver Eckman-Larsons contract,
which was a little bloated for what he was at that point.
Still there. To that deal, and it is still a part of that, right?
What's a bad contract now?
You might have slight overpays,
but what's a bad contract now?
when the cap is accelerating this fast.
And by the way, I did Agent Provocator with Alan last week.
He thinks in half a decade we're going to be at 150 mil.
I think a good area when you look at the bad contracts is the young players you gave the money
and then they don't live up to those expectations.
I got two in my mind right now.
One is Elias Patterson.
I think that's an easy one to go to.
He's making $11.5 million till forever.
That is a bad contract for a guy who's going to give you at this point 20 goals.
Like, Elias Pedersen isn't worth that money.
That's a bad contract.
Mason McTavish, to the Ducks, is a bad contract because he's not making the lineup in the playoffs.
Right.
Joel Quenville hates him and scratched them in the playoffs.
That is a bad contract when you're paying him $7 million, if I remember correctly.
That's a bad contract.
And then you look at other guys who are scratched who are in like their 30s who just don't fit on the team.
You go back to the playoffs again.
Aiden Hill on the Vegas Golden Knights.
bad contract. You're paying $6 million in your press box. And even if you had to play Steve's kid
Leo in net, John Tororello would rather do that than admit at a podium that he didn't go to
that Aiden Hill is a competent goaltender. Because Carter Hart was swimming in the finest.
He was terrible. He was awful. And they're like, but Aden Hill will be worse. But isn't that
interesting, Jesse? I would argue only one of those contracts that you mentioned, and you only mentioned
is untradable.
Elias Pedersen, I think, is essentially untradable.
Hold on, unless there's bad money coming back.
I don't think anybody's going to go,
sure, we'll absorb that without the Canucks paying a price of like a first-round pick.
And the Canucks can't pay that price right now because they're awful and they need to
keep those first-round picks.
It could be a lottery pick.
I think that is, that contract, I think Jesse's a really good point.
That's as close to untradable as you can get.
You can trade it, Steve, you're right.
But the other one, so Aiden, Aiden,
that's tradable.
If Markstrom can be traded.
Six million dollars for somebody who you're not going to start.
I don't think it is picking that up.
But maybe you would.
Goals is weird, man.
Maybe.
Maybe.
And you know,
Hey,
Vegas,
knock a couple of millions off that.
You don't think if Vegas could have traded that contract this summer,
they would have done it.
I kind of think September's going to be nuts.
Yeah,
I don't know.
I do think you're right in that.
Like,
I think every contract in the league is tradable.
You need to find the right dumb GM.
But what we used to,
first of all,
we don't have third.
32 smart guys running NHL teams.
Hey, heads up, people listening.
Find the dumb, yeah, find the dumb GMs and call them all the time.
If the bar is tradable contract, I think every contract in the league is tradable.
I think it's just a simpler definition of what it used to be.
It's just a player who does not help you win.
Yeah.
A player does not help you win, does not provide good value.
Like, what Adam was describing with Elias Patterson, he's right.
Like if you trade him, you got to take some kind of big contract back.
What it used to be was just straight up shenanigans.
Do you remember, like the David Clarkson.
I was just going to say.
For Nathan Horton.
And you had to bring insurance into it.
Yeah, because the blue jackets didn't take out insurance.
So if people don't remember this, David Clarkson signed an extremely bloated deal with the Leafs,
which is a shame because he's actually a really awesome person.
I'm going to, there's my first.
Oh!
Now, Jess, remember we had him on the show at Gond Kiss?
He was amazing.
But obviously he wasn't great with the Leafs.
And so David Clarkson gets traded to Columbus and why does Columbus help the Leafs out?
Well, because Nathan Horton, who had signed there for a similar deal, is not able to play hockey anymore because of a bad back injury.
And Columbus, when they signed the contract, for some reason, didn't insure it, which meant that they were paying out of pocket.
If you insure these contracts, which most teams do,
and the player gets injured never plays again,
insurance pays that.
And so the Leafs could afford to absorb that.
It's the only way they could get out from under it.
The utter shenanagannery that used to go on Robi Da Island.
Do you remember the Jared Cowan saga?
I do.
I remember the, wasn't it the,
was it Jared Cowan that the Leafs were like,
the agent was like, oh no, they told him he was going to play.
And everybody was like, no, he's not.
I think that's Malian Mahalic.
It could be Cowan.
Well, they were worthless.
Was Walsh's client.
Mahalik just fell out of favor with Babs, but you know how Babs is.
That guy scored in their home opener and never played the Matthews era.
During the Matthews was on the ice with Matthews, Nealander, and Marner.
I remember the agent apparently was like very indignant with the Leafs.
It was like, you told us Jared Cowan would get a fair shake.
And it's like, well, no, he's never, he was not going to play here.
Yeah, but they found that they could buy him out and it would for some reason give them cap space.
That was a Prydom masterclass, yes.
Yeah.
But it penalized them the next year.
It did, but they didn't care because the cap goes up.
And the year that they buy them out, you get free money because it's all made up.
We don't have to talk about that minutia anymore.
Thank God.
It's so much simpler.
You're just trading players.
You're trying to get better.
nurse i don't know if he made the oilers better well we know he didn't make them better on account of
they already had him he definitely makes the sharks better oh yeah i'm not sure that ryan shea makes
them all that much better though uh right oh to the oilers to the oilers like i'm not sure we can
you know we'll do our season previews and stuff that's not what he's talking about are we playing
who he play for later yeah i think i'm in trouble i think i'm in trouble man but like um you
Teams like the Oilers can take a stab at,
let's see if this makes us better.
Let's try something different.
Whereas before they're like, well, this is our life now.
Yeah, which is what the Leafs did for a very long time to even less success.
Right.
And now the sharks are like,
let's take a stab in the dark.
The sharks, because of their cap situation,
were able to take on two different deals that didn't help division rivals at all.
Right.
Right?
We're in a new simpler cap world.
And thank God.
And actually, they did just change the LTIR rules, but I don't think people stashing people in LTIR would have been an issue anymore.
I really don't.
Now, we also got to remember we're at the beginning of this.
Oh, I know.
This is the fun part.
Let's enjoy this.
Yeah, this is the fun part.
Later on, this we will, there will be a bill.
Look at all this space.
Eventually it's going to balance out.
Yeah.
It seems it'll be screwed.
Burning a hole in my pocket.
What am I going to do with all this space?
The second growth slows.
They're bones.
I seem like the Blackhawks right now,
they're kind of pushing up against a cap
and that might come back to burn them in a couple.
How is that possible?
Like, that's not a good situation to be in,
I don't think, for a team in their position.
I think you're absolutely right.
And that's because they're poorly run.
But again, we can deal with that in the season preview.
I wondered this too, guys.
Okay, so there is no,
there's no luxury tax threshold in the NHL,
which there is in the NBA.
They have luxury tax thresholds,
and then they have a hard cap.
And MLB?
And MLB doesn't have a hard cap though.
And so I've always advocated for that.
I always think, hey, you know, make the billionaire spend more, do it.
You know that you can spend over the cap.
It's just that it takes the penalty off the next year.
So do you think there's a team who's balzy enough to go, you know what?
We will go $5 million over the cap this year because this is our year to make a run at it.
Oh, they're already doing it.
And next year we'll take the penalty because we're up $10 or $12 million next year anyway.
Who cares?
They're already doing it.
That's what all these, oh, yeah, we're going to sign him to $1 million.
And, oh, yeah, he's got 14 different bonuses when he plays six minutes or whatever it is.
Lowest possible thresholds for some of these veterans, right?
Yeah, like the plus 35 contracts, I think.
The Matsukarello deal, Bergeron's last deal, Jamie Ben's current deal, I think.
I know there's a bunch I'm forgetting.
I don't think Peron's got a deal, but that guy seems like a perfect.
candidate for something like that?
100%.
And you tell Alan, I friggin
said it.
He's a great candidate
to give so much money to.
Absolutely.
It's crazy.
The guys who are still available to...
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
I wonder if there was a lot of
kind of wait and see
what everyone does.
And now everyone
is slowly starting to show their hand.
Jesse, on the Z.
Boolean Conn.
I know you did the full video, but we haven't had the chance to talk about it.
What were your, you mentioned very, very briefly here that all the projections really look
like he's going to be a good second pairing, or not second pairing, sorry, second defenseman
on a team, which is really hard to find, right?
What were some of the things that you found when you did a little research on him and
you think that Canucks made a good bet here?
I do.
Like, I think, like, you're not getting the offensive talent that Quinn Hughes was.
I think that can't be your expectation of your Canucks fan, like going into it, this is our Quinn Hughes replacement.
You're getting a completely different defenseman.
But in terms of growing into somebody who can play a whole bunch of minutes and develop within the Canucks organization that's trying to rebuild their culture completely, this is your good starting block.
You know, you need the young talent to be like, okay, it's new Canucks era.
We have a new head coach, new general manager.
we're not doing the old
whatever we're doing anymore
with Jim Rutherford running the ship
even though he's kind of still there
just talking to the owner
making more than the GM too
what a weird situation
yeah it's very weird
but this is your starting block
and I think it's a good bet
now it's 9 point like Fraser Mitten's 7.2
you're like oh yeah I can see that for a third pairing
defense minute or third third
line or a second line center and then you know
because there's two guys ahead of him
in that lineup right now
yeah but they're like Zach and Lynn Holmmer
are two guys ahead of them in that lineup
Unless is Linholm still there? I don't even know. Yeah, okay. With Bouillon, like, that's a full 2 million more, 2.1 million more than Minton. And he's a left shot defenseman. Like that is a, that's a monster number. So that $9.38 million in terms of percentage of the cap, it's 8.26%, which in the 2025 cap environment is around $8 million. So the way I reduce.
jig my brain to think about it is, okay, this contract kicks in next year. Zeev
William is an $8 million defenseman at 21 in 2025.
But let's say four years from now or three years from now, he's a really good, your number
two defenseman.
That's a good price to pay $8 million in that, in the new cap environment, or in the old
cap environment, sorry, for your second pairing defense, or for your second top defenseman.
Got it.
So I think it's value for what they think he should be.
and I don't see any reason right now that he can't be that.
I know he's a little undersized at six foot and one 85 right now,
but I think he's got all the tools to just be a solid guy in your back end
who's going to give you 25 minutes a night.
And when are we going to learn?
Like usually these big deals coming out of ELC
were like, oh, what's he done to earn that?
They almost always work out.
Yeah.
And it started with the Jake Sanderson deal.
Remember the shock on that when that happened?
Look how well that's working.
Jake Sanderson, Tim Stutzelah.
Let's throw in.
Jack Hughes is maybe the most notorious.
His brother didn't work out so good.
Okay, that's fine.
Not yet.
Not yet.
Could work out.
Oh, my God.
Carol Caprizov.
Carol Caprizov was making nine several years ago.
And he had, I think, 50-something games to his name.
Yeah.
50-something really good-looking games.
But it almost always, like they don't throw this money around flippantly.
Teams make mistakes all the time.
It's usually the third and fourth line guys they make the mistakes on.
Yeah. Generally speaking, they cross their T's and dot their eyes with the big boys.
Well, I look at the lineup here and I forgot Marcus Patterson's not there anymore, but he hasn't been there for a while.
William's going to have this incredible opportunity with Philip Ronick.
I think that's going to be, that'll be a really good, fast skating top line.
And the thing is, those guys are signed forever.
Ronix signed until 2032, Booiam signed until 2035.
And I talked about the offensive upside, not being at the Quinn Hughes level,
but the opportunity he has with the team is a lot of power play time.
So he's going to get a lot of points there.
I know he played pretty significant minutes on the power play last season when he came over.
So he's going to have that runway to just develop that game as well.
whether he develops a big bomb from the point or just the kind of the quarterback back there.
When you're on a team that sucks and you're a prospect like this,
you get the opportunity to learn at the NHL level.
And I can see him developing into a really solid power play guy for them
because he's going to have that opportunity.
Fantasy sleeper.
Oh, that's a good one.
I don't know if his team's going to win many games,
but he's going to get his cookies.
If bad teams, people got to put up points.
If plus minus is a stat near Fantasy League, maybe not.
Right.
might be minus a million.
Also, leave that leak.
Yeah, stop with plus and minus stats.
I hate that.
I hate that because you can find a guy on waivers
who just happens to be the fifth of five.
I'm really good at finding players who get three points
and a four three loss.
Yeah, like give me a break with that shit.
I hate that.
I hate that.
I always kind of look at the beginning of September
as like the beginning of the new year.
To me, it's the real new year
because that's when hockey starts
and the season starts.
and it's also in business terms
pretty close to Q4,
you see.
It's not quite Q4,
but we're prepping for Q4,
which is a big Q4.
The lead up to the Q4.
Absolutely.
What are your favorite cues?
Well, Christmas Q is a big Q.
Right?
And that's Q4.
It's all lead up to that.
There's Thanksgiving
and the Halloween in there as well.
And if you're...
Q2's underrated.
You think Q2's...
Well, the spring?
Yeah.
Yeah, you're right.
You're right.
A big Q.
It's a big Q.
But I would say the biggest Q is four.
And if you're trying to get ready for Q4,
and you've got some online business
that you need to conduct and perhaps it's not as efficient or great as you need it to be,
why not try Shopify?
Now, we've been using it for what, Jesse, half a decade?
Yeah, quite a while now.
The store part of our website where you buy our fun merch is built on Shopify, and we've
loved it ever since we've been on it.
And if you're thinking about signing up for Shopify versus like any other platform, Jesse,
when you were making your choice, why did you pick Shopify?
I say this every time, but it is the ease of use.
It does not require a lot of prior knowledge in terms of building websites, which none of us have
because they make it so easy just to put it all together and look decent and have a good shop that you can sell.
Fun, Steve Dangle, merch on.
You can launch your store and start selling things in a few simple steps.
They've also got Sidekick AL AI, the tool that helps you along the way.
Sidekick Al.
Sidekick Al!
You can call them that.

You haven't had the chance to talk about
Kail McCarr's contract, the most expensive in
NHL history. 20.4 million
AAV over eight years.
Macklin Celebrini was going to be the highest paid
player in the NHL no longer.
Leo Carlson still will be the highest paid this year
because Kale's contract doesn't kick in until the end of this season
along with Macklins, $20.4 million.
And I look at that and I go,
I think the Aves got a deal.
This guy's closest comparables in a lot of ways are Bobby Orr.
Kale, yeah, Kail Makar.
He's a Hall of Famer if he retires today.
Yes.
Today.
And people get, oh, his number,
how many Norris trophies does he have
and how many people who have won that many Norris trophies, I think it's three, have...
Already, already three.
Already have ever not been inducted into the Hall of Fame.
The list is zero.
He only has two, by the way.
He has two?
The list is still zero.
So it'd be like, or Lidsstrom and who?
Who else have...
Since 1980, the only Norris winner to not be in the Hall of Fame is Randy Carlisle.
Whoa.
Wow.
And then...
P.K. Suezeman.
PK. But, like, he only recently became Ellis
eligible.
I think we could.
I think we could.
Fascinating case.
Maybe there's a place you could write about that.
Perhaps blogging, Steve.
You never know.
You never, never, never say never.
Two Norris is a consmite, the Calder trophy in 1920, and then the Stanley Cup as well.
He has four individual trophies.
My favorite part about Cala.
Favorite part about Cal Macar is where he was drafted.
Fourth overall.
Fourth, yeah.
Drafting's hard.
Drafting's hard.
But I think really hard.
And Nathan McKinnon was mad.
He's like, who the hell is this guy we drafted out of the AJ?
The AJHL.
Right.
Who's your favorite AJHL team?
Let's talk about it.
By the way, I like his nicknames.
The kid, baby face, and all hail.
Hockey reference needs to get their nickname thing in order because nobody calls anybody
any of the nicknames that they have underneath.
It's so ridiculous.
Is it like local broadcasters like that are like the local, the regional guys?
But like if you go on anybody's hockey reference, they have a bunch of nicknames.
I'm like, no one's ever called.
of that.
The kale man.
I would love to know what Gretzkeys are other than the great one because they seem to always
have multiple.
Wainer.
Gretz?
I think Gretz was one.
Probably Greets.
They have the great one.
Oh my God.
They have the great one.
Okay.
The great Gretzky.
Brinks and then Gretz.
I'm assuming Brinks is because he got paid someone.
Brinks truck.
Never heard that in my entire life.
You know, this is great.
You know what?
We should do NHL nickname challenge.
I think Austin's are ridiculous.
Okay.
I'll show you that right now.
All right.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
I remember seeing this.
So,
Austin's.
They have,
no.
First of all,
they have 42 of them.
They are poppy,
A,
Matts.
Never one.
Matt's.
Matty.
Tony.
Tone.
Big tone.
Like it's the
Sopranos.
And then big cactus.
Okay.
I like big cactus.
You know what's weird?
Most of those are true.
Find the human alive who calls him big cactus.
No one.
He calls them A-MATs or Big Cactus.
Yeah.
Big Cactus is sick, though.
Big Tone?
We should start.
Who's calling him a Big Tone?
I'm not calling him Matthews this year.
I'm calling him Big Cactus.
I need him to score in the first game of the season.
Big Cactus!
In that L-F-R, I can be Captain Big Cactus.
And you know, we could go to Home Depot, get you a big cactus.
And you can just pull it up.
We got to get you back in your props here.
You know what?
You got to get your Pops back.
I got to get back into my friggin' carot-on.
On the live streams now, when you're doing play-by-play, you got to call them big cactus.
And you don't have to water a cactus.
That's the point of a cactus.
You wouldn't even have to take care of that.
Absolutely.
It's a housewarming gift for Austin.
There you go.
Amats.
You're going to poke yourself so many times.
A-Mats.
You know what, Jesse, can we do NHL nickname challenges throughout the season?
Yeah, I'll give you a hockey reference nickname.
You got to tell me what player it is.
Oh, I love that.
Okay, perfect.
Always good to have a cactus in a house with a six-year-old, a two-year-old and the world's dumb as dog.
Mitch Marner?
Marnes
Bruno Marns
That's fine
That's a great action
Who came up with that?
Bruno Mars
Absolutely not
Yeah I like that
Nobody has ever called him that
Yeah
Mitchie
Magic Mitch
That's nothing
Mouse
Never heard that
Mickey Mouse
And the magician
I thought it was the Mitch
The Mitch
Magician
I thought that's what it was
Oh that's what it says
Contact hockey reference
Okay William Nealanders
I think are going to be unhinged
Because it's going to bring one up
that I think he would rather us not remember.
What is it?
Is it still there?
Bill Nye.
It's not.
Bill Nye, Bill, Willie Stiles, that's an actual nickname, and Will Nye the Swedish guy.
No, this is his old Twitter handle?
Do you remember his old Twitter handle?
I do. Tell the people.
Sniz bone.
I'm assuming that is a boner joke.
It is something to do with...
I don't know what snizzin is, but I know what a bone is.
something to do with sexual organs and their byproducts.
Oh.
I believe.
Great.
And he just had.
Wow.
I asked him about it.
Uh-huh.
At the Ford Performance Center.
How graphic did he get?
He was just like, yeah, no, I thought it was funny.
That sounds like him.
He used to talk even less than he does now.
And he was just like, thank you for reminding me to change my Twitter.
And then he.
And then he flipped you off and left, right?
He did.
Yeah.
All right.
Now, the next thing we got to talk about,
so Kail McCar's deal, I mean,
I don't know what else there is to say.
I mean, you did the full video,
but it's a contract that is so unbelievably deserved.
And you know what I was like to,
I want to say this before we get into the Detroit situation
because there's a lot to impact there.
I'm glad that Kale went for it,
and I'm glad that Macklin went for it.
Leo Carlson was a different situation because,
yeah.
The Flyers went for it.
Well, the Flyers went for it.
And Leo was like, sure.
Yeah.
But Kail McCarr and Macklin celebrated.
in different scenarios.
Macklin's an RFA.
And RFA's traditionally have been ground down to the crust of the earth.
But San Jose looked at what happened with Anaheim and said,
let's just pay the man.
What if we just,
we have the player.
Why don't we just pay him?
And with Kale,
Colorado had no choice but to pay him.
But Kale had a choice to say,
I'm not going to push you that far.
And he pushed pretty hard.
And still not a max contract.
but guys like Connor McDavid
were like, I'll give you another year.
I'll give you another two years.
Do you think anyone is ever going to sign a max contract?
I don't.
I do think that's going to happen.
I do think that's going to happen.
Like Max Max?
Max contract.
Yeah.
I do think so.
I don't think we're ever going to see that.
I think these players are different now.
This isn't the Sydney Crosby.
This ain't our era where Sidney Crosby is like,
I'll make the same money.
Don't worry.
Just build a good team around me.
Because he's old now.
Hockey's still hockey.
I think we're going to,
well, we just,
what was it going to be?
be $22 million, I think is the max this year.
It'll probably be 24 next.
And K.L. K.L.
McCar got to 20.4.
See, I thought it was 20.8.
Is the max?
And he was at 20.4.
I don't, if it's not Kail McCar, like, if it's not Connor McDavid, then who the hell is it
going to be?
His contract is 17.97% of the salary cap.
So he's a little bit under, because you can do 20%.
Yeah.
20%.
Hot.
Gosh darn.
That's crazy.
I respect him for being like, listen, I'm worth it and you're going to pay that.
Still 2% under.
Yeah.
And if anybody would do it, it probably would be hit.
And he gave 2% back.
Good luck with it.
Have fun with that.
You better surround me with some stars with that 2%.
It's crazy that Nathan McKinnon is arguably not the best have.
Well, I think it's crazy that Nathan McKinnon on both extensions got absolutely fucking host.
Yeah.
Stop signing for turn.
Like Nathan McKinnon
No one
I think in their entire
NHL career
Has left more money
On the table than Nathan McGill
I wish Matthews had a shittier agent
I know
He was he was early to this
Oh he knew
He was early to this
He signed the five year deal
And then the four year deal
He was early to this
And I'm
Upset about it
Nathan McKinnin
Makes a million dollars
More than Marty Nietzis
Brother
Which is just egregious
Brother he makes what
Half a million more than Rantanan
that's not
both those guys got hoes
and that's neither
of those guys' fault
like that's not
natius and ranton's fault
that's oh no
McKinnon's fault
now do I think he cares
probably not
but we
okay Nathan McKinnon
I think at the end of his career
it will not be unfair
to say he's left
about 50 million bucks
on the table
you can't tell me
that doesn't rank you
a little bit
I say more
I'm being conservative
Jess but you can't
tell me that doesn't bother
somebody
50 million dollars
so if he's at 12
and let's say him
and kale
had like matching 20s
That's $8 million every year.
On his previous deal, he probably left just completely, I don't know, 15 mil on the table.
I think 20.
He was making 6.3.
6.3 million dollars until like 2 years ago.
But that's when that's when like 9 was like king shit money.
Yeah.
Right.
So I think over the course of that deal, yeah, probably at least 15, 15 to 20.
Okay.
This one is going to be way more, dude.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And he knew this was coming.
coming. I don't think he did or he wouldn't have. No, he did. If he listened to Agent Provocator, he would have.
No. But, but we knew this. When he signed that extension, the NHL had already said we're going up by $10 million a year. We've agreed to this between the players and the owners. He knew. He knew. Come on. Now, the other thing is, he still is going to make like $100 million in his career, but it could have been $150. And Nathan McKinnon is known to be competitive. I feel bad for him. I feel bad for him. I feel.
real bad for Nathan McKay.
I think whoever.
Same.
I just think, man, that would rank.
I'm not saying you have to feel bad.
I'm just saying it would bother me.
It would bother me.
I know he's got that Tim Horton's money, though.
Yeah, yeah, he does.
That's true.
He's probably made it up.
Drive-through orders.
What's his other one?
Circle K?
I bet you Sidney Crosby's been making the same.
No, Tylenol.
Tile and all.
What's the drink?
Quench.
Oh, he does quench.
Yeah, that's true.
Whenever you go to, you see a quench stand.
Him and Coach Chippy.
Yeah.
But I bet.
That's so crazy.
Sidney Crosby's probably making the same amount of money for Tim Hortons as he was 20 years ago.
He's probably like, you know what, Tim's, you don't have to pay more.
Yeah, probably.
Crossby actually gets Tim Horton's money.
Crosby has essentially played for free.
8.7.
Well, at the time when he signed the first 8.7, it was like, it was 50% of the cap.
And then, yeah, and then he did it again.
I think Sid has, obviously he's left a ton of money on the table, but I think Sid also understands that like all the endorsement.
Like, he, before McDavid, he was Canada's guy.
And what's amazing is, even though McDavid, he's still Canada's guy.
So the endorsement still keep rolling in, so I think he's okay.
Nathan is a little bit different on that.
I think he just doesn't.
I think Nathan McKinnon is also okay.
Do you think Tylenol's paying the guy?
Like, I'd love to know what they're paying.
A lot than all of us are making.
I'm sure he's feeling no pain.
Uh, hey, hey, hey, hey.
Let's talk about Detroit.
Helen St. James reported this August 5th,
and I'm really glad I saved the tweet from Winged Wheel
because they summarized it so beautifully.
Okay?
And we love those guys, so giving them a shout out.
Please listen to their show.
Chris Illich has hired an outside search firm.
Sound familiar?
No.
Looking for someone analytically minded in decision-making,
not just an advisory capacity.
Sean Horcoff running the day-to-day...
Because remember we were asking,
like, the last couple of episodes,
who's actually running it?
And they're like, well, Steve Iserman's still the GM until we find someone.
Actually, no.
What Detroit told us was wrong or they switched that off.
Sean Horcoff is running the day-to-day in the interim,
but does not extend into making trades or it seems signings.
Because this morning, Pierre LeBron tweeted out,
and this is, I think, I love that Simon Edvinson said this via his agent.
I love that this is out there, but I don't think it's going to happen.
hearing that RFA Simon Edvinson intends to still be at Detroit training camp next week,
even if unsigned, patiently waiting for the Red Wings GM situation to iron itself out before resuming negotiations.
Now, Red Wings fans needed a win.
And him saying this is a huge W.
I'm going to tell you they're full of shit.
And no player is showing up to camp and risking injury without a contract.
It's not going to happen, which tells me Simon Edvinson is going to say.
sign a contract here in the next week.
But the thing that I think is more important than any of that, because I don't want to
yuck Red Wings fans, young, yum here.
It's been a rough summer.
Patiently waiting for the Red Wings GM situation to iron itself out before resuming
negotiations, meaning Eisenman had a partial deal in place, as did he with Patrick
Kane, who also said once Eisenman was out, everything changed, and he eventually
had to sign his contract in Chicago.
But Cody Stavenhagen, who is a senior writer at the other.
Athletic for the Tigers has mentioned today that Tigers GM, Jeff Greenberg, is not pursuing
the Red Wings head of hockey operations position, which obviously there's a head of hockey ops
and a GM.
Greenberg had communicated to the Red Wings, has communicated that to the Red Wings and
indicated he's just committed to the Tigers.
Interesting because they're both owned by the same family, the Illich family.
But for this to be, remember when we talked about Isam and getting fired in mid-July,
and we're like, that's weird and the timing's weird, and this is going to be a tough
replacement to find?
Well, we're at September 8th.
We are a week away from that being two full months.
We, I need a noise meter.
Like one of those actual decibel readers for how loud Dylan Larkin gets booed.
Oh, did you see this?
Opening night.
Did that guy wrecked everything?
Yeah, did you see this report?
Check this out.
So the flyers, according to Kevin Kerr's from the athletic, checked in on Dylan Larkin
this summer, but we're actually turned away.
Minnesota, Vegas, and Florida remained the last.
landing spots. I'm assuming Florida's out
because they're
capped and they, yeah.
Vegas, maybe
Minnesota makes the most sense
but who are they giving back?
He wants to go to like three or four teams. I had heard
Dallas was in there. I thought
that was on his list.
But maybe they're not. But Minnesota, Vegas
and Florida are the destinations.
Or no, it was Werenski who said no
to Dallas, right? Yeah.
Yeah, but I thought Dallas.
down that Harley deal.
But I thought Dylan Larkin wanted to go to Dallas.
I thought that was still a part of it.
Regardless, neither of them are willing to meet the Red Wings asking price.
He should get a damn that's crazy you could hear from space.
Like for that list.
And they haven't stripped him officially at the captaincy yet either.
I think he's going to be in the lineup, isn't he?
Opening night.
It feels like where this is what we're trending towards.
This is what I'm saying, man.
This extremely awkward moment where they're announcing the starting lineups and
Dylan Larkin is just like, hello.
This is going to be weird.
Like what I'm seeing from people, and I understand the anger and I understand the point they're trying to make, I just, I think I disagree though, is if a player is a full no move clause and they request a trade, they should lose the no move clause.
No, that'll never happen.
I don't think I agree with that.
And Adam said the most important part.
It doesn't matter if I agree with it or not.
The players union will never, ever in a million years agree to that.
Yeah, so you can tweet that all you want.
It's going to, you're firing tweets into the unit.
You're farting into a windstorm.
Yeah, but that's what tweeting is.
Yes, that's true.
That's true.
You're focusing too much on what is and isn't allowed and not enough on what is and isn't a good choice.
He made a terrible choice.
A really, really short-sighted, uninformed choice.
Being shirtless at a baseball game?
That one's fine.
Okay, you're okay with that.
I'm okay.
Well, everything within context.
That was a joke.
I was just kidding.
No, I know.
So wait, where did he do that?
I don't even know.
Get back to your point.
Well, no, like, the, okay, the United States gold medalists, they're all darlings, right?
He somehow found a way to be unlikable in an American city after winning a gold medal,
which is genuinely hard to do.
It's hard to be unlikable within the same year that you want a cold metal for your country within that country.
Well, but he's pulled it off.
They melted away in March after he came back.
Yes.
And so did his performance.
Yes.
And then he did what dozens of players before him have done, which is request to trade with a full no move.
And very often those players get what they want.
Sometimes they give you a list of one.
Artemey Panarin.
Yep.
List of one.
Artemey Panarin had leverage, which is I am on an expiring deal that's expiring very soon and you're screwed if you don't move me even if it's for a pittance.
Brother, you're signed for a half decade.
Who do you think you are?
We're running a business here.
Dylan Larkin making that request didn't realize.
he had zero sway in determining whether he's going to be traded or not.
You're not Brady Kachuk.
Yeah.
You're not in that.
Yeah, your brother's not playing for the Panthers and influencing decisions.
And you have more than double the years remaining that he does.
I think it's more just the contract situation.
Anything off the ice, like, who cares?
I think it's just strictly you are locked in long term on a very good deal.
The Red Wings can just keep you.
And that was always an option with them.
And yeah, every guy you're naming, they're on their way out in a short amount of time.
And they're like refusing to sign an extension.
And they're like, okay, I'm going to leave anyways.
You can train me now and get something with the year and a half remaining.
Just like Quinn Hughes, just like maybe Werenski before he backed out.
Just like Austin might come to the table if the leaf still suck.
But Dylan Larkin's like, I got like four or five years left.
And now I'm requesting.
Why would we ever move you if I hate you and you hate me and I want you to sit here?
This is Steve Eisenman talking to Larkin.
Right.
Well, and I also think...
Suck, don't sign the deal.
I also think it's important to mention that he's not playing in a Canadian city
because it's become acceptable.
And like McKenzie Weger was on a podcast.
He just got traded from Calgary to Utah, again, who he played for.
And he said it's nothing wrong with Calgary.
It's just there's so much more available down here to us.
And if you're rich in the States, yeah, that's probably true.
And I think that's also just where the NHL culture is right now.
and if we ignore that, we're ignoring facts in reality.
If Dylan Larkin played for the Edmonton Oilers,
maybe not this era of the Edmonton Oilers,
if he played for the senators like Brady did,
if he played for the Jets like Hellebuck did,
which we'll talk about either today or tomorrow
because there's so much prep to get through today,
I don't know if we're going to get to it.
If it was a Canadian situation,
nobody in the NHL would give a shit.
But because it's an American city
and because it's one of the most American cities,
Detroit, mother eff in Michigan,
home of the car?
Are you kidding me?
The only place where there's car.
Well, that's where, but you know what I'm, that's the, can you get anything more American
than Ford or General Motors and Chrysler?
Like, you know what I'm talking about?
That is like the heartland.
And I can't see how I, like that is, that's why this is framed differently.
That's why people are hating on them.
I guarantee you, if he played for a Canadian team ever to be like, well, I understand.
Canada kind of sucks.
It's, well, it's, there's two things there.
One, it's demonstrably soft because, like, people tend to understand the, well, I'm not from this country and I want to play in the country I'm from.
And people go, okay, I understand that.
Yeah, I get that.
He's not doing that.
He's just like, I don't know.
He was born in Michigan, Steve.
Yeah, this team that I lead kind of stinks and I don't want to be here anymore.
And people do understand that part, but it's pro sports and you're paid millions of dollars.
Sucks to suck.
Don't sign the deal.
Also.
And you signed the deal.
Has he rejected a paycheck once?
No, he hasn't.
Has he turned one down?
No, he is not.
Then get on the fucking ice.
Well, I think that's how this works.
I think he's going to.
I think he's going to get on the end of the day.
He got his wish too.
Eisenman's no longer general manager.
If that is what he wanted, like he wants to win, right?
And the organization, you're clearly not happy with the moves they've made.
It stinks for a long time now.
And if his motivation is, I want to win, then he's kind of getting
what he wanted and they're going to get a new regime to hopefully push this thing forward.
So maybe it was a really bad idea to make this whole thing so public.
And if you waited a little and you made this a little bit more private, then you kind of
would have got what you wanted.
It's just such an awkward situation.
And let me, let me dial it back here because I'm making it seem like he's living in a world
of hurt and he's living in deep regret.
I saw the photo of him at the baseball game.
I don't think he is.
Thank you for reminding me that he got what he wanted.
This is how it starts.
He got what he wanted.
Isamon's not there anymore.
And I would not be surprised at all.
Like, can we record Detroit last?
He's going to get dealt before the season begins.
You think so?
Yeah.
Yeah, because that's how these things work,
is they get their way.
Red Wings fans,
It's...
Can I say that...
What you can hope for
is like a galvanized team
that wins a bunch of FU games.
Which I think they are going to be.
Listen, they always start hot too.
They always start hot the Red Wings.
It's March that's the problem.
Yes, exactly.
But I would say this could be a scenario
if he's still playing there
in September 28th or 29th,
whenever they play their first game.
He might be the player
that makes other players
think twice about requesting a trade.
Because they might give it to him so bad,
even in preseason,
they might give it to him so bad
that other players might be like,
I'm not to think hard about that one,
especially making it public
because one of the things that players do
through their agents
is when they've made a trade request,
usually those are private.
The reason you keep them private
is because general managers,
when they're looking to move a big player
who's requested a trade,
lose leverage when other teams know
that player.
has requested a trade. Has this player request your trade? Oh, no, no, of course not. We're just
looking to get better. And we would like to trade one of our best players for several
picks, actually. And so when they make the public declaration, the pressure goes to the team,
right? I think what'll happen out of this, if they don't move him, is that people are going to be
like, listen, we'll make the request, but keep it quiet, please. Because I don't want to get
booed to hell and I don't want this playing out publicly and and it like this could be a tinderbox
and it also I think Steve you nailed it and I'm going to work this in if he doesn't get traded
to the to the videos that we're going to do for their preview I don't know what to make of the
red wings they might be great because of this craziness they it might bring the whole room together
it's an f-U sport it is it's an f-u sport and there have been plenty of f-fu teams like you know
people make fun of John Tavares because like when he left the Leafs, the Islanders got instantly good.
Let's not ignore the fact that everyone, everyone heading into that season thought they were going to finish DFL.
Yep.
Dead effin last.
Everyone thought they were going to be a bottom feeder.
And they were, they turned it into, you could argue over a two year span, they were the second best team in the NHL.
they just kept running into Tampa.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Right?
Those Eastern Conference finals were slogs.
Slobber knocker.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Let's, uh, we're going to replace John Tavares with an over the hill val Terry Philpola.
And like Robin Lennar was in net, which you're going to be like, what?
He's good.
Yeah, we didn't know that then.
No.
We didn't know that then.
We thought he was over at the hill the first time.
It's an FU league.
And when teams are dialed,
when teams have a chip on their shoulder,
they can do special things.
You never know.
I wouldn't mess with the Red Wings early on this season.
Maybe in March.
The NHL, don't take anyone like that.
Absolutely.
But this one in particular, I think that team's pissed off.
Now, what do you think the chances are they do trade him?
Because one thing that we talked about with Alan,
I keep referencing this Allen episode because he's usually,
like he was the one a couple of years ago where he's right,
but he's just early on the salary cap going up and whatever.
There's the first comment on the video.
of our agent provocateur this past week was Alan was actually right about
these sticker prices two years ago and nobody was everybody was writing them off back then
so he says now everybody's back from vacation we know Bill Daley and Gary Bettman are on a
Zoom call with the coaches today like everything is well and truly back in order people back
from vacation Alan's saying we're not going to have to wait till Philip Deneaux gets
gets traded a week before Christmas for the first trade to happen.
He says there's going to be some,
there's potential for crazy moves to happen,
not just in preseason and training camp,
but also in October,
November because you get off to a slow start,
everybody's got cap space all of a sudden.
It's like you ever microwave a bag of popcorn?
Yeah.
There's always a couple of keener's that pop way earlier.
Yeah.
That was Eve William.
Yeah.
Well, so.
And Fraser Mitten and
and we're about to get
Oh, Brendan Breeson, another key.
That's a huge one.
Okay, so Jesse and Steve, my question to you, your prediction, when the season starts?
So first game, is Dylan Larkin a red wing when they break camp hit the ice first face off?
Is he taking it?
Because he still is the best center on the team.
Okay.
I'm cynical and I think he's going to get his way.
However, they don't have a general manager.
So I think he starts the season as a red wing.
And Sean Horcroft is not allowed to make trades.
So, yeah, okay.
Jesse, what do you think?
You agree with Steve?
I think he's a Red Wing opening day.
I don't want to see it.
I think it'll be funny.
And it's going to happen.
Will the booze be louder in preseason on opening day?
And will there be booze at all?
Or will Red Wing's fans go just silent treatment?
No, I think they boo.
You think they boo heavy.
They boo.
Yeah.
The only way out of this is winning.
I mean,
What if they're in the playoffs next year and he's still their captain?
That'd be cool.
Like that would be a hell of the program.
I don't think he's going to be captain.
It's my prediction.
Like we arrive at the opening day of training camp,
but he doesn't have a C on his chest.
I've already seen some theories that they're like trying to soft launch Mo Cider as captain.
He's still the captain.
Yeah.
I think I think you go captainless.
You can go ahead.
I just have a quick question.
When they do introductions, don't they usually do the captain?
Last.
Yeah, they do numbers, but no matter of the captain's number.
where they do the captain last.
So if he's still captain,
it's going to be a long buildup
and then him introduced last.
I think you go no captain,
Dylan Larkin on the Red Wings opening there.
That's my prediction.
What's yours?
I think you've got to give the captaincy to Moe Sider.
You would switch it?
But do you do it while Larkin is still there?
And I think if it were me,
because I'd be so mad at him,
I'd be like, yeah,
this is how the fucking Red Wings roll now.
You want to ask for a trade out.
We're giving it to,
most cider is the next captain.
He is.
He's the best player,
best defenseman on that team since Littstrom.
He's the next captain.
I think you send a message and say,
we only want people here that want to be here.
You're going to see,
you know,
you're going to stay here until we get our price.
And here's our new captain.
I think it's best to leave a blank for a little bit.
Should have a little just cooling down period on the captain's team.
I don't know that.
I just want to ratchet up the heat.
You give it to somebody next off season.
I would agree with you if they didn't have the perfect candidate sitting right there.
What's the rush?
What's the difference?
There isn't one.
He has signed on an extension.
I am also like I love Mo Cider.
I think he's an unreal player.
So I'm biased.
Can you imagine the pop?
If the booze are heavy for Larkin and he's not captain,
Mo Cider is. Can you imagine the pop for Mo if that happens?
That, it's such a silly thing. It's such a silly thing. But you do like, you should do what's
best for your hockey team. You shouldn't worry about the player intros. But you don't want it
ending with booze. Actually, I think you should do. I think that is what's best for your hockey team
not ending it with booze. Right? Oh, no, sorry. Sorry. Yeah. I don't want to end with boo. And I think
fan engagement matters. Very much matters. So imagine.
the third alternate captain or whatever it is comes out and it's Dylan Larkin.
Yeah.
Or he just comes out whenever 71 is in the order.
That's probably better.
And at the end it's Mo.
That, we talk about how loud the booze are going to be.
The cheers will tear the roof off that place, which is unfortunate because they just built it.
That's right.
But they're going to need a new one.
I don't know, man.
Like, you got to have...
They should have Mo-Sider-themed rubber octopuses to give away on the first night.
I...
I feel like my idea is very good.
I just don't think they've left themselves enough time to pull any of this off.
We're like, what, three weeks away?
Yep.
Less?
Yeah.
Well, I think they've been thinking about it.
They must have been thinking about it.
Otherwise, what has Chris Hillich been doing all summer?
Boy, I bet they're going to be unreal.
Six weeks of just thinking.
There's so much.
You got to do something.
So much thought.
There's an unbelievable amount of thought.
Big brain over here.
That's true.
On the arm.
Holy, it's September.
Get moving.
Yep.
Let's go.
Another situation playing it itself out publicly that you have no doubt seen.
And we don't normally talk about this stuff, but it's a big deal.
Elliot Freeman and Kevin B.X at Sportsnet still reportedly unsigned.
I don't know much.
more than that and obviously nobody's commenting on it but um you know there was rumors about
another insider trying to poke their way in there should the deal not go through so there was a
there's rumors that another insider not from canada was trying to get in there there was rumors
Steve dangle there were there was rumors too that like amazon was interested in both of their
services but only if they could do both networks because amazon and sports net already have
have a relationship. They're not competitors. It's a different business model. And the thing was that
that, you know, TSN was not going to grab Elliott. They have their insiders. They have multiple.
Sportsnet and Elliott are like this and they should be and they should work this out. But I think
Amazon like whatever offer might have been on the table, it was like, but you have to work at
Sportsnet too. We're not, we're not blowing our announcer budget on you. And Frege rightly makes a lot and
so does BXA.
My question is this for SportsNet.
And we already know at some point, because of the enormous amount of money they spent on the Maple Leafs, buying Bell out, and also the enormous amount of money they spent doubling the price of the hockey rights that they've never made money on to hold for the next 12 years.
At a certain point, they're going to try to find cuts somewhere.
And I think that's why these deals haven't gotten done yet.
not that you're going to save maybe 10 grand on a deal.
Like I don't see why they're like this, but they are.
Steve, you have some experience with contracts expiring on August 31st.
It's an awkward date, especially with the season.
How did that go for you?
Yeah.
So I don't know if it's uniform at SportsNet, but I know my contract and I think a lot of
others at SportsNet expire August 31st.
And, you know, I don't, I'm sure there's other ways to justify that.
but it's very advantageous to Sportsnet
because if I'm negotiating with them, right?
And it's June.
And they're like, what's your number?
And I go, it's this.
And they go, well, ours is this.
And then we talk all the June.
And then we talk into July.
And then we talk all the way through August.
August 31st is going to come.
Yeah.
And they're going to go, look, here's the number.
and if you're not willing to take that number,
unfortunately we're just going to have to walk away.
And now you work in sports broadcasting in Canada.
There are so few places to actually go and work.
The hockey season is about to start.
You are staring down the barrel of it
and you're going to be left there holding yourself in your hand
because you don't have a job.
Is that going to get you more money or less?
Is that going to get you more of what you want or less?
I think they structure it that way, so you get less?
They structure it that way.
But you can talk to other people throughout the summer.
It's not like you can't talk to other people.
Yeah, you can talk to other people, but you know, Steve Dangel maybe doesn't have as much leverage as
Elliot Friedman.
And most people don't.
This is the thing.
So you all probably heard that story.
Thank you, Adam.
You all probably heard that story.
And we're like, yeah, but you can't do that to Fridge.
I think that's what's different here.
you could you could do that to me i think that other people there at sport i think they think they can't
no you can't it's elliot friedman um no you can and this is awkward for me i have spoken to him in the
last couple days and it was not about this because i wouldn't put him in that position and i also wouldn't
expect him to answer me right how's your summer i think stuff like that but i can i can pretty
much guarantee you that's what was going on i think it's notable because every year
Elliot does, I believe they do like a 32 thoughts from Europe and, you know, for the
NHL Europe thing.
Yeah.
And I've not seen a single thing from SportsNet in Europe, especially from him.
And so I think that that's notable.
I think that that tells you at least when the, you know, because they have, uh, they have
all the European guys go to the NHL Europe thing and they take time out of their vacation to be
there.
And I think it's notable that there was no 32 thoughts interviews from there.
I think it's notable that there was no pictures, no social media,
don't know of sports that was even there.
Like, I have no idea.
Those were extraordinarily important dates on the calendar.
For media, yes.
Because, just like we made fun of you for going to Henderson.
Yeah.
So I've done them a bunch of times.
Like I did, they did one at the CBC studio.
I did one in Henderson.
I've done them elsewhere for different things.
But what you do, especially as a partner of the NHL like Rogers is,
is you go there, you capture content with the biggest stars in the game,
and you use that content online, on television, and on the radio for the entire season.
Like, this, you know who this sucks for is the people who have to put these shows together.
Yeah, the producers.
Because, hey, if you're already overtax, there's not enough of them.
If you're not a fan of features, uh, I got great news for you.
I think they might have less because they already missed the boat.
Yeah.
They missed the boat with, like, who must have been there?
I assume Leon Drysidl was there.
Stutzel was there.
Tim Stutzelah.
So there's a premier player on the Oilers.
There's a premier player on the senators.
You know, David Posternaut.
Ataturka was there.
Peturka.
So there's a brand new Boston Bruin.
And like, Boston is not obviously a Canadian team.
Huge.
In many ways, it might as well be.
Yeah.
It's got a massive fan base up here.
Massive.
It is in a lot of ways the eighth Canadian team.
Yeah.
Right?
Even more than Buffalo sometimes.
Sometimes.
More than Buffalo, maybe even more than Detroit.
I'm also biased because I lived in Oshoa for nine years.
Or Boston place.
There's an enormous, Jesus, Boston fan base in Oswa, Boschua.
We call it.
Boschua, because of Bobby Orr.
Yeah.
You know, you, you.
You missed the boat already.
And now, whenever the North American one is, became that much more important.
Like, Leif's camp starts on the 16th.
So I assume everyone else is right around there.
Like, North American media has got to be any day now.
I don't know when it is.
And if you miss the boat on that one, too.
I believe it's this week.
Oh, my God.
Like.
Yeah.
I believe it's this week.
So you're going to have to send somebody for the love of God.
Like, even if it's not Fridge, you have other hosts.
I think Kyle.
Kyle Bukoskis could do it.
Does he have a deal?
I have no idea.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I have no.
Because this is,
he's not the only one in this boat,
is my hypothesis here.
Well, it's been reported.
Jennifer Bottle will no longer be on Saturday nights,
potential for Monday nights.
But, Jesse, I want to ask you this.
You know,
the August 31st deadline gives SportsNet a lot of leverage.
But if Elliot and Kevin are not there,
I think it gives them the leverage.
How does SportsNets non-live hockey part of the broadcast survive them maybe not being there?
I don't think our opinion of the SportsNet broadcast is going to change either way because I don't think it's very high right now.
I think they'll get it done with Elliot.
I think he'll be on the broadcast and everything.
Everything will be fine.
But I think we all want more from the broadcast.
and the way things are going right now before this season isn't giving anybody hope that it's going to be a step up going into this season.
If anything, it'll be even our opinions on it and it might drop going into the season because I don't think anybody expects right now, okay, CBC's no longer in play.
They're going to do their own things on Saturday night.
I don't think anybody expects there to be like, okay, wow, now we truly love the Sports Step broadcast.
I think we're all going to have our same gripes that we've had with it the last couple of years
because that's how a giant conglomerate runs their broadcast division.
It's slow moving.
It's not as exciting as we'd hope.
And it's, I don't anticipate that changing a whole bunch going to the season.
I think, I think you're right.
I just think those two guys are two of the reasons to watch if there was them.
And if you re-sign them.
We know Ron has resigned.
Ron McLean will be back.
If you resign Friegeon-B-C-Rex.
you're breaking even.
Yeah.
On a broadcast that I think without them was sinking anyway.
Only show in town.
Yeah.
I mean,
I also wonder about BX in the States, man.
Like,
you look at the TNT panel.
When they announced Gretzky on that,
I was like,
man,
have they never seen a Wayne Gretzky interview?
That guy is terrible in front of a camera
unless he's like,
you know,
thumbs up,
go Canada kind of,
you know,
rah,
raw guy.
He's been a revelation on that.
We knew Bissonet would be awesome.
awesome because he is.
But Gretzky,
he's been spectacular.
BXA would fit right in there.
And you know who else really needs to pump up their on air is ESPN?
They're,
honestly,
I understand like during the season,
we don't get to watch a lot of ESPN broadcasts
because the games of broadcast in Canada,
but me doing the streams that are like late night
with Hayden,
Hayden's shaking his head,
doing the late night,
you know, like Ducks game.
I think he loves it.
it's unbelievable.
I understand why people are so mad about it.
It's terrible.
It's terrible.
And I don't even think it's the producers of the talents.
The way it's set up, it's bad.
They need some personality in there.
BX, I feel, has got options now.
You could join Canucks legend Mark Messier.
He could have a couple of Canucks legends on there.
Let's talk about being Canucks, Mark.
You know it, what it's like.
I enjoyed my time.
Did you also enjoy your time?
How many playoff goals did you score?
I guess, yeah, right.
I guess we'll know that Elliot's signed when the next 32 thoughts comes out.
I think that's what's going to happen.
By the time this show.
Yeah, probably already ended up.
I want to talk about Quinn Hughes to make producer Hayden uncomfortable
because this summer was very, very interesting.
And I want to work backwards a little bit because Chris Johnson,
of the Chris Johnson show on SDPN, was on TSN this morning
and here's what he had to say about where they stand on the extension.
He said, my understanding of this situation,
through the summer is that I think he was having trouble basically making up his mind
about what he wants to do for his future.
There is a desire that we've known for years that one day he wants to play with his brothers.
I think he did enjoy his Minnesota experience after the trade was made partway through last year with Vancouver.
And so I think at some point he's going to have to, I'm sure he's been doing some degree of soul
searching and leaning on conversations with people he trusts around him.
But he's going to have to make a call on what's best.
I think the posture of Minnesota is that they're here.
I don't think that there are any restrictions on their end in terms of making him a very wealthy man,
but he has to be willing to sign it.
And at least to this point, I don't think he is committed to that or something that he's ready to do.
Now, remember at the beginning of the summer, Craig Leopold, who owns the Minnesota Wilde,
who is, keep that man away from a microphone in a high-level negotiation, said,
we're getting it done.
And then this summer,
and I don't know if you want to play it, Jesse,
but Bill Garon was on a sports radio show in Minnesota.
And the host really took him to task.
And I wish to,
Bill Garon's a very affable guy.
In an interview,
we had him on AP,
and he's funny.
And I'm not surprised he went with this,
but I think any other general manager in the league
walks out of this interview.
And I think,
do you know what I'm talking about, right, Steve?
With the,
do you know what I'm talking about?
Do you remember this?
I'm just sitting here shaking,
and vibrating trying not to make it about the Leafs.
What is it about the Leafs?
I want to know what you think.
No, it's just, it's, the media is impossible here.
Oh.
Hayden, are you worried no one's,
anything like this in Toronto Media?
Heyden, are you worried no one's going to play in Minnesota?
Here, here, turn on, or you know what, turnoff is Mike?
I'm the Toronto Media and I'm big and scary.
No one's going to sign with the Wild, right?
Honestly, when I, again, like when I hear the Toronto Media,
stuff. I laugh.
Like, if you know Michael Rousseau, who
writes for the athletic in Minnesota, he doesn't
pull punches. No. And we'll play
the clip right here. This guy doesn't pull punches.
So the whole media thing's hilarious. Minnesota media is
aggressive. All right, here we go.
Got it up.
So, there you go.
Pledge today.
That if you are
unable, if you are
unable to get
a contract extension.
I'll never come on your show. For Quinn Hughes.
No. No. And you are
then forced to trade him, you will resign as president of hockey operations.
Because you can't trade him. You're over a barrel. You have to extend it.
You know why. Because you were all in on the original move.
Yeah, of course. Basically, four number one picks. I know you can get a bushel load from him.
You can't trade him. The signal that sends is a defeat. Well, you can.
So you're not going to
To take the pledge.
Doesn't sound like you.
That's a
Any pleasure with you, pal.
That's courtesy of K-fan in Minnesota.
He's like standing over him,
finger in his face.
By the way, I love it.
By the way, that's radio in a nutshell.
Like millions of dollars,
shitty-ass camera,
old studio,
and we're sitting the guest beside you.
Sitting the guests beside you.
Just build the right studio, guys.
For God's sake.
Here's our water cooler from 1986.
Yeah.
Now, Garen also said this summer, Quinn might be after different things.
He's got a lot of different things in his life that are important to him.
Who knows what he's going to want in the end?
Listen, what were we calling him last year?
What was everyone calling him when he made that trade and several others?
Genius.
Big balls, Billy.
That's right.
Brass balls, Billy.
Popping him on the table.
Menacingly, South Park style.
And now all of a sudden he's this quivering little lamb.
No, I think you got to give him the credit
that if he had the cahones to pull the deal off,
he has the cahones to sit there uncomfortably a little bit
while this shakes out.
You're not, you would love for this to be handled by now.
To either have some sort of deal where you get a King's Ransom,
for him or have a contract.
This is not how it works out all the time.
You have months and months and months of this remaining.
All the while, he's got to run the hockey team
because it doesn't just end at Quinn Hughes.
He's got to go and do other stuff.
This might be a rather uncomfortable season for the Minnesota Wild,
but it could end with the championship.
It could.
Jesse, what's your,
What's your gauge on the Minnesota situation?
If your management, are you worried?
If you're a fan, are you worried?
I personally don't think you can just let him walk at the end of this season.
Oh, no.
Become a UFA and not recoup assets.
I think you have a deadline, and that is the trade headline.
And once that comes around, you either have a contract extension with Quinn Hughes
or you are moving him.
And I think that's what it comes down to, because even if you go to July or June
June 30th at 1159 and you signed the sign in trade with the new team he wants to sign to.
It's still not good enough, you know, in terms of like doing the Mitch Marner.
Man, who would do that?
Oh, there it is.
Or you get me.
We're like, yay, we got Nick Waugh and you're all excited about that.
I don't think that's a good situation to be in.
I think it's put up or shut up.
Either you're going to be a Minnesota Wild here for long term or we're going to get assets for
Quinn Hughes and where you want to go and we'll send you a team where you want to sign that extension.
so we can get something back where we can still contend for a Stanley Cup this spring
because we're still want to win,
but we got to subtracts Quinn Hughes from that winning situation.
Now, I'm going to give you the, I agree with you, but I'm going to give you the other side of that.
Jesse, this is a Stanley Cup, potential Stanley Cup champion team.
Steve mentioned it.
Don't you own rental this, freaking Kyle Dubas,
don't you own rental this and just say, screw it,
to quote Adrian Dator,
just fuck it and just go for it
and just say, you know what?
Chips fall where they may,
but you could have an injury
like you did Durantin and in Dallas.
You could have Kail McCar, Nathan McKinnon,
heard or whatever like they were
in the conference finals last year
where Vegas got through.
And you know what?
We're a center away.
I mean, Minnesota really is a center away.
And they have a goaltender
that's so good, well, one of those two,
that they could probably go out
and get that center as a part of the package
along with that kid.
from college that Stramel, I think his name is.
You know, do you not just say, let's just take the risk and try?
The deadline might be earlier than that then.
Okay.
If that's the idea, then it's you're making that move.
It's a hockey trade in December and you're moving on from Quinn.
I just don't think you can just let Quinn Hughes go away for free.
You can't.
To me, that's not how you should run a team properly.
It's a little too short-sighted.
I know you got a chance to win the Stanley Cup,
but I don't think that it makes or breaks on having Quinn Hughes
when you can use that to support your Stanley Cup run this season
if you want to make a December trade.
I just think like you need some clarity there going forward for your organization.
Put my deadline down for Valentine's Day.
Yeah, around there is probably good too.
Yeah, the All-Star game is the first weekend of February trade deadline.
When is, do you remember the day?
Last year, March 8th or whatever, yeah.
Yeah. So Valentine's Day, sometime between Valentine's Day and the All-Star game gives you about a month.
And like to give you a real world example to answer your question, Adam,
do you think the Colorado Avalanche were trying to win the Stanley Cup two years ago?
Yes.
They traded Miko Ranton.
Right.
Because they couldn't get the contract done.
I think that was smart GMing.
And if you can get a Marty Natchez out of it.
Exactly.
And Rantan's contract was expiring.
Exactly.
Right?
So it wasn't like, it wasn't like a year before it.
It's a one-to-one situation.
I think Chris McFarland's a very good general manager,
along with Joe Sackick, doing that thing over there in Colorado,
and now he's moved on, and Joe Sack is back running the ship.
But when they were making those moves, I think it was a smart decision.
Right.
You know, like we're going to get maximum value for Ranton in,
and that's Marty Nietzsche.
Is the difference, though, this time that we all know he wants to play in New Jersey,
and if he's not signing in Minnesota,
we all assume that's the team he'd want to extend with.
And then, you know, because the Carolina Hurricanes,
who were the acquiring team,
really did think, hey, maybe we can get this guy signed.
I think a team will take a chance on Quinn Hughes, who has no protection.
So you can send him wherever you want.
Which is crazy.
Somebody is going to pay that Marty Nietzsche's deal back to you for Quinn Hughes.
If it's done, because that was done end of January, right?
Yeah.
So I see very similar time.
We were in London.
Yeah.
This is not Dylan Larkin.
No.
Like, Garin screwed.
No, he's extraordinarily not.
He has a lot of options, especially because that contract,
under $8 million.
for Quinn Hughes. There's no rush here.
Some good team's going to pay for that if they want to.
Or if you just stays in Minnesota.
There's no rush here. Also, Jesse,
wholeheartedly agree with you on Rantanin,
but looking at the salary cap.
They should have just kept them.
Yeah. Oh my gosh. Yeah.
But they made a decision, which I think is good.
Yes. Yeah.
Like my decision in that scenario
would have been like, here's $12 million.
But their decision was we're going to move you
because we don't want to do that. They just made a decision either way.
And I think Garon should make the decision.
The powers in his hands.
You make the decision.
Don't let Quinn Hughes determine the situation here.
How much time do I sit there and blow it against Florida?
How much time do I have for my next segment?
I'm debating whether or not we go into this one because it could be a little bit longer.
How much time we have left in the show?
We do have a show tomorrow.
I know.
That's what I'm saying.
If it's video game talk, let's save it for tomorrow.
Okay, we'll save the video game for tomorrow.
Yeah.
And you can do something quick here.
Yeah, let's spend time on that one.
Because that one's a good one.
Everything that's going on.
Okay.
We can even wait until Friday and I could bring up the game in real time because it'll be out by then, right?
I think we do both.
I think we do both.
I want to do it Wednesday because it's still hot.
But I also want to bring it up Friday.
It might even be more hot when people get their hands on the game.
So I'm saying.
Yeah.
Do a double sake.
Sure.
A double say.
All right.
Something fun then.
Okay.
Before the break, we talked about that hockey card.
You guys remember this?
The Macklin one?
The Macklin Celebrating card, which could be the most.
expensive hockey card of all time.
Turns out there are only two players with a million dollar hockey card.
One of them is Wayne Gretzky.
The other is officially Macklin Celebrini.
According to the Sports Collectors Digest, the trading cards of Macklin Celebrity
obviously searched during his rookie season.
Now, there was a Young Guns card of him.
He scored 45 goals, 115 points last season.
It is obviously a 10 out of 10.
It is a one-of-one, 2024-25.
upper deck young guns outburst gold number 451 rookie card so you said 10 out of 10 and
one of one yeah 10 out of 10 quality yes but there's only one of these cards in existence
yes okay so that's that's cool um the cards sold for 1.28 million dollars American that's so
where do you put that I well so I'll tell you okay according to sports cards diet
or sports collectors digest, it was an all-time highest public sale for any hockey card other than NHL legend Wayne Gretzky's top selling cards.
Only four hockey cards have ever topped a million dollars. Three of them were Gretzky.
One of them was in a 78, sorry, 7980 OPG, which is a PSA 10, which is the rating.
That sold for 3.75 million in 2021.
And then, and it actually sold at 1.29 million in 2020.
a number one, sorry, a one of one, 2015, 2016,
Panini, flawless, monuments, autograph, memorabilia, platinum,
Kobe Bryant, auto patch card.
That is all the same sentence, by the way.
Holy cow.
Sold for $483,000, while a 2000, 2001,
upper deck game jersey autograph series two,
Kobe Bryant relic card number eight of eight,
jersey number sold for 385 grand.
And there was three other Kobe cards that have topped 300,000.
I think that's really interesting.
There was also a Shohei Otani that sold for 384,000.
They've got, yeah, like they've got the Kobe jerseys.
They've got Victor Wembenyama sold for a quarter mill.
They've got a Michael Jordan signed card that sold for a quarter mill.
but again, these are, you know,
the Michael Jordan one is from, you know,
20 years ago.
This is really crazy.
And I think it speaks to,
I mean, baseball cards are obviously the peak
because that's who started it.
They were gum cards, right?
But I feel like football and basketball cards
are oddly behind hockey cards
at least at the top end.
Yeah.
And I don't know, I guess because hockey people are hockey card people.
Yeah, maybe the collector community is just bigger.
I don't know.
I don't know anything about it, but I just think it's really interesting.
It could be our bias as Canadians.
Well, and also the sales.
Like the money backs it up.
Well, like, you know, you go to any card expo here.
I mean, the highlight is going to be the hockey cards.
Yeah.
And the Steve Dangle.
But I'm looking at even like a Jude Bellingham card, right?
Pretty good soccer player.
Biggest sport in the world, $150 grand.
You ever seen a soccer card?
No.
That's what I'm saying.
Like, I think it's part of the culture, right?
Yeah.
It is very.
different. What I'm
wrapping my head around is
I'd love to know how many
10 of 10 Gretzky
O'Pichies that you were just talking
about exist.
It can't be many.
It might be one to go
for that price.
Because you're talking about a card
that was packed shittily
and haphazardly in the 70s
and just flung
around and some
probably kid open
Could have put it in bike spokes like they used to for some reason?
Yeah.
I don't know why they did that.
It's a miracle that my card, my OV card, is a 10 of 10.
Because you've moved and you've had floods.
Yeah, I bought that thing in 2006.
This thing from 1979?
Are you joking?
Yeah, it's pretty cool.
How?
Like, so I get a QR code with my 10 to 10 card that allows me to see how many other
10 of the tens there are.
It's not very many.
I want to say it's under 50.
Yeah, I think it's standard on the top of the PSA thing.
You get to look up your card, yeah.
I'd love to know how many Gratsky's there are.
Because if you get, you're going to get five digits for like an eight out of 10.
That's how rare they are.
That's cool.
Any other card eight out of ten, they tell you to wipe yourself with it.
A Gretzky card from 70s, hot damn.
I think a Macklin stock.
Like, I think this is the time to get on it because it's not going down.
Would you draft him first overall this year in fantasy?
No.
You'd still take McDavid?
Yes.
Would you draft him top three?
So I'm talking about McDavid, McKinnon, dry-sidal Kutcherov.
Top two.
So you'd take him second.
Yeah.
Jesse, what about you?
Because you are the good fantasy.
I mean, Steve did win the fantasy football last year.
If you want a long answer and not a fun answer, it depends on how you're
your league scored.
Yeah,
you're right.
But Brady Kachuk has long been one of the most valuable fantasy players ever.
Because if your league has Pims and hits as positive stats,
he is like top three most valuable player.
Kiefer Sherwood.
Kee for sure.
Yacob, Trennan.
Oh, I had Trennan.
He was a monster for me last year.
Yeah, yeah.
So it depends on how your league's set up.
But Macklin this year, yeah, he's a top five, top five guy in fantasy.
I think from the offensive side of it, 100% top 5.
You know what's crazy is I was in a pool in his rookie year
and I was in a couple and I picked him up off waivers.
Isn't that wild?
You're not in a real league.
He started the season hurt though.
Yeah, he did.
He did.
Someone just panicked.
So anyway, okay, so we'll wrap that up for today.
We've got season previews coming, I think, as early as next week, right, Jesse?
Yeah, I'll let you know about this.
You can go to sDPn.com.
dot CA slash
SDP.
I'm just pulling it up in real time
if it loads in a second.
So if you go to
sdpn.
dot CA slash SDP,
you'll scroll to the
Steve Dangle podcast page
and then you'll go down
and you'll see that
there's now a season previews
hub there
where you can find
when the season previews
come out
and you can watch them all
from theirs.
And you'll also be able
to see all of our predictions
but they don't appear
once you go to the site
if you want to watch it
and then find out the predictions.
But so you'll see, like, there's the Western Conference, which we're doing first.
You'll see that on September 14th.
You'll get the Anaheim Ducks season preview.
That's when it's going to be released.
And then if you want to just like, hey, what do they think?
You can hit reveal predictions that all line up here.
We're going to pick the over under for each team and where they'll finish in the division.
So for each team, you'll get that.
That's sick.
What the over under is.
So, yeah, head to sDPn.
And dot CA slash SDK to find out when each team's preview is released over the core.
of this month.
You're so impressive, Jesse.
That's cool.
Steve and I had so much to do with that.
You're welcome, everybody.
I found out about it just now.
Yeah, me too.
Jesse also does this stuff that just doesn't tell us.
You guys happy to be back?
Yeah, I'm happy to be back.
Hey, we'll be back tomorrow.
We got another show.
Oh, yeah.
Hooray!
