Sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where
TaskRabbit comes in and I think you should check this out because here's the deal.
One of the things, one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor
to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows.
And their way around on that is like, well, it's a patio window, you can do that yourself.
And I'm like, well, hang on a second.
What if I don't want to?
I don't have the stuff because you got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing.
The chemicals, you got to have the right chemicals.
see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task
rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance
mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have
been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your
to-do list 15 off your first task at taskrabbit.ca or on the task rabbit app using the promo code
Dangle. Taskers across Canada book up fast, especially for same-day tasks. Get $15 off your
first task right now with the promo code Dangle at TaskRabbit.ca or the TaskRabbit app. You should
download that. TaskRabbit.ca. Code Dangle. The highest paid player in the NHL does not have
team yet wow have we not recorded a show no it happened after right after our show on friday
last week and then you went home recorded a video oh yeah uh and then and then and so this is the
first time we've and we thought we had a decision by now but what it tells me because anaheim has
seven days to match what it tells me is that anaheim's not sure whether they're matching
leo carlson i mean if you were sure you would do it right away like i i remember montreal and
carolina carolina or no montreal offer sheet it's no which one was it it was montreal offer sheet
aho sebastian aho and carolina if i'm not mistaken the next year did uh cockney me yeah but one of
those two made them wait the full seven days even though they knew well it's probably mark
bergevin being a dick too let's be smart bergevin it's like you know what you're not gonna mess
around with me i will because he was you know a bit of a tough i don't think pat forbeak as much
as a tough guy as pat forbeak is and was and is a grinder in negotiations and we'll talk about that
i don't think i don't think that's what's happening here no i think anaheim is legitimately i think
they're scrambling i think that's why the minchikov deal got done so quickly when it was waiting and
waiting and waiting and waiting that guy didn't play every game for them last year i know i know
well joel quinnville better play him now uh and well he has to they have no d and leo carlson i
mean like free just said it i know cj and julian recorded they probably talked about it this
morning um i mean jesse they said this has gotten out of control for pad for beak and has completely
messed up his organization as in they don't know exactly how they're going to handle this
because cutter goche is still available too but not offer sheetable yeah i was very complimentary
of paverbeak in the springtime when anaheim was doing their playoff push and you see how they
built their team and it was very impressive the mix they've had with great trades and drafting
players and then you reach these points and you realize oh paverbeak is just kind of a jerk to
his own team yeah where he just wants to grind these guys in negotiations and do the opposite
of what the smart teams are doing and that's locking up all their long talent as early as
possible as long as possible yep and he's messed up that area of his roster completely and that's
unforgivable because that's the part where you can't trade that's the thing you can't go out
and just acquire you can't just go get leo carlson unless you're philadelphia and you're taking
advantage of another team because you're gonna spend your whole time with those four draft picks
trying to get back leo carlson and that's entirely your fault for not just giving him the contract he
want it's also taken three years for leo carlson to be leo carlson right you know it takes time
for guys to come in and adjust they like listen a lot of people are like 18 million is insane for
leo carlson and like yeah of course well at right now maybe for a year or two it's insane it's gonna
be fine but um there's there's value in the work that philly didn't have to do well yeah and and
and steve you're right like you're basically stealing the hundreds of thousands of dollars
that anaheim put into his development more than probably millions thanks for developing this kid
bye and thanks and people are like oh for first round picks you can do a lot with that no you
can't no you really can't yeah you can go out and get leo carlson yeah exactly well that's the thing
you're gonna match that people like oh they can get larkin larkin doesn't want to go there
dude uh also doesn't want futures yeah exactly it doesn't help and like the force first round
picks aren't just for first round picks they're late first round picks yeah because of where you
expect philly to be in the standings they're going to be in like the 20s those aren't very
valuable in terms of like oh my god it's a top 10 pick no they won't be how about this you can
have leo carlson or for the low low price of four first round picks for mackie samuskevich's
totally like uh i'd rather have the stud center which is why i think they have to match and and
And it's interesting, that's where I think it's going,
but it's trying to figure out,
I'm sure what's happening right now
is they're having multiple conversations
with Cutter Gauthier's agent,
who's probably like, ha, ha, ha, ha.
Listen, we may not have many cards,
but we do have the Leo Carlson card.
And if I'm Cutter Gauthier,
I don't sign for more than three years.
All right, bridge me then.
Bridge me.
Bridge me at 10 mil.
I scored 41 goals for you.
I don't know if I,
I think that would be a gift to them at this point.
yeah maybe but i think i'm not signing with you i'm not signing with you he's got no other option
he has to sign with them yeah but not for that no my other option is i don't go to camp
yeah i don't know i you're already remember you're already a guy that's pushed your way
out of one franchise that label with the old boys club sticks with you and i i think i think the
label's already there i think you just go get as much money as you can but i get if i'm cutter
gochi i'm going short term short term as much as possible because i want to jump back into this
this pool of enormous amounts of money so here's here's their big problem so there's also uh the
defenseman heinz heinz is available yeah um so you got to get him and cutter gochi minchikov
got signed minchikov got signed but now like one of the things we talked about i'm pretty sure last
show was all right well the ducks need to improve though like you need to replace the stuff that you
lost in carlson yeah and you lost mctavish too yes you have to go out and replace those parts
of your lineup they're going to be decidedly worse like other than the fact that some of the
young guys are going to get older which is obviously good and that's how you improve
internally but on paper they're clearly worse can i tell you what you don't do what you don't
go sign aj greer to 4.25 million dollars when you um when you've got those deals available or jeff
jeff malott at 1.85 like think of a difference that imagine they just never put pen to paper
with those two guys that five million bucks you'd have all these matched and done right now all
three contracts would be done even with the offer sheet and some people are going to be like whoa
look at some of the cap hits the leafs just signed yeah the leafs could afford it yeah
Leafs don't have any pending RFAs.
You didn't get any of your homework done
before you went outside to play
and now you got a bad grade.
Yeah, I think Pat Verbeek might be,
like, we might be delayed on the,
hey, we're going to accept the offer
or we're going to match the offer sheet
because he's probably looking for situations
to dump off Kalorn or Kreider.
I think that's exactly what's going to happen.
Kalorn, Kreider, Vetrano is the other one
I was looking at.
I can see Vetrano staying.
Like, I think it's probably Kalorn or Kreider,
maybe both, you know, as expendable.
But Vetrano wasn't playing, though.
That's true.
like like he was a healthy scratch but that's why he's hard to move that's why i don't know
oh yeah yeah like crider crider and calorn have value yeah but also value to the ducks yeah yeah
like vetrano i could see them having to pay yeah you know just be like hey help us out here's a
draft pick with vetrano like here this would be a good sort of situation for the ducks if they were
able to go out and do what colorado did with jack jury so they lose jack jury which which sucks
But they were able to get two cost-controlled, really cheap, younger players in Leroux and Svechkov, was it?
Yeah, Svechkov, Fedor Svechkov.
This is the Fedor Svechkov show at this point.
If they were able to go out and get two players for Kreider, who are not Kreider, but they're cheaper, that'd be a huge victory for them.
Guys who probably wouldn't even generate a cap hit because they're going to be in the minors or something.
Dude, anything.
Anything but what they currently have going on.
It's a nightmare.
And Pat Bruby put himself in this situation by having no foresight into what could happen
with the young players on your team.
Foresight's the key word, Jess, because I'm always I'm shocked by the agents.
I'm shocked by the players and I'm shocked by the general managers in this league.
There is zero, literally zero foresight from these people.
And Carlson's agent sure seemed to have the hang of it.
Yeah.
Well, how many times has Alan said on Agent Provocateur?
He's an NHL agent.
how many times has he said the cut the cap is going up and whatever you think the number is
it could be higher and they're even saying next season the number that's the expected number might
even be higher because there's going to be so much payback to the to the players that there's
just not it's just not worth it how many times is a guy like that need to say that publicly
how many times do you need to say like i look at you know they talk about demidov's contract
lane hudson's contract um jackson lacombe's contract he was speaking of the ducks right
great deal when assigned but you again we all knew this was coming each and every hab should
fire their agent but pat for beak was banking on the nhl being what it has always been not what it
is and i think what we're seeing with danny briere is first off an aggressive ownership group who
approved this and secondly um the changing of the guard the general managers are a lot younger now
they're not these old guys you know brian burke going what do you mean you're doing something
completely legal i'm gonna fight you in a barn which literally happened with dustin penner yeah
but it was funny and uh and i think i think that what i'm blown away by is that that you wouldn't
have like what was the thing that was said this weekend it was free she was like well they knew
that there was a risk but they didn't really know how imminent well and and and they took
leo carlson said in an interview last summer he would have accepted eight years nine and a half
last year if they'd just done it and pat for beak is known and in the player polls and the
agent polls is known as a really tough negotiator on rfas but i just i i think about this and i go
pat nine and a half for your number one center the guy was leo carlson was great not just last
year the year before too look what descends did with jake sanderson everybody was like oh wow
that's crazy the guys played one season look how great that deal looks did you not learn from
anyone do you not pay attention jack hughes jack hughes exact who didn't even have a great year
and then signed that deal yeah it's something like it was fine yeah i don't really remember
it was so long but jake sanderson specifically was like wow this guy's like 30 points and we're
gonna give him seven million dollars and he's a-okay so he is very good i think i think on
this one i mean you guys said it pat didn't do his homework i also think pat got a little big
for his britches i think you forget sometimes like you're i love when adam uses ancient terms
i know that you're a general manager i know that you're tough to deal with this guy specifically
i know he was always tough on the ice i get that but ain't the same buddy you're you're you're in
anaheim yeah and you've just gone through a painful rebuild they hadn't made the playoff
since 2018 you hadn't won a playoff game since 2017 you can't fist fight a lawyer in court as
much as you'd like to uh get being being tough on the ice only gets you so far so they have a
meeting the timeline is they have a meeting with him with leo carlson that morning docs are not
willing to go past 12 and a half okay and they know they've got this offer sheet in hand and
so a couple hours later it's signed and it's announced now that that also i think is the
agent and the player going okay we've had enough of you now now because that to me is not just
protocol like a lot of players and agents would be like listen we're going in in this negotiation
but just so you know we've got an offer sheet and it's pretty hefty and you better up your number
they didn't say anything they just said okay pat what do you got all right is that all great we'll
sign this then that is a message sent more than anything else in the world do you think pat
knew like do you think pat no no i don't think they just blindsided no that's my understanding
is he didn't know yeah he didn't know that during those negotiations the offer sheet was in there
back pocket and they countered at 15 is what the ducks said no to and he would have the ducks said
12 and a half carlson and his agent said 15 knowing they had 18 and they said no to 15 and
they were like okay and then they signed the offer sheet going back to something else we've heard
this off season is uh jason robertson turned down it was like 15 and a half from seattle
400 million dollars an hour like good call yeah good call jason robertson should make more than
that yeah okay by the time this is all said and done it's not impossible he's the highest paid
player in the nhl listen death taxes and the robertson's filing for arbitration they're uh
the inevitable things but both of them it's nick's like third fourth i think so yeah they're all done
out of toronto by the way uh and now oh with that situation you could see robertson do like a one
year deal and then walk himself to ufa yeah season and then get the 20 million dollars from somebody
maybe seattle probably god man but yeah the pat verbicki got outplayed how class in every way in
this negotiation and like i i know okay the 18 million with philly gives me more pause than the
four first round picks because the four first round picks it screws you if you're an old team
that really has nowhere to go if the florida panthers which they can't but if they were to
go out and offer sheet someone i'd be like okay well it's gonna make you a contender but also
if this doesn't work you're bowed yeah on your last leg yeah the flyers got mitch kauf drysdale
uh liskey i can't remember the other name of the the kid they just drafted uh luchenko
obviously you throw leo carlson into that because he's he's only 21 they don't have sam arison
they don't have sam they have two nhl goalies now um and careful now he might hear this
you do not hear the the free segment apparently sam arison reads all the social media
he shouldn't he shouldn't so apparently that's a thing for him and he said on the podcast
sam don't listen to podcasts about hockey and don't read your social media you should read
the scouting report yeah this guy shoots high this guy shoots low even what he was an 870
something and he got a raise yeah well that's unusual that's a gift i don't think that's i
don't know this man i don't have anything against him why do you hate him why are you running him
out of ottawa i would love to um no i think you want to actually balls balls up in the air yeah
we'll see the the point is that you know this was more than just an offer sheet signed which
barrett hayton was barrett hayton was just an offer sheet signed and we still don't have a
resolution there no we don't but this was no one cares about that one anymore you know i don't
blame barrett hayden for signing it i don't blame new jersey for um uh for offering it and i don't
blame the utah mammoth for taking their time and going do we want to walk this guy to free agency
because we can't trade him um but i think with this one it's it's the message of this like sorry
but you're not in control anymore pat and it's a shot across the bow at a lot of other general
managers apparently the old boys club's all pissed off about this well uh because how dare you do
this and whatever also it makes the job harder danny priera is now going to be a target listen
if you're in a sports league and you're not a target it's not a league everybody's best player
should be a target well what do you mean we all have to try now this has been our criticism about
the nhl a lot of people if you only pay attention to the nhl you don't understand the outrage but
we look at baseball we look at the nfl we look at the nba and then we look at the way the nhl
operates and it's just it's childish yeah oh man i remember in the flat cap here i just i i don't
know it looks hard i don't think i can do it and so nobody would trade i'm not gonna i'll fist i
mean still burke offering to fight kevin lowe is funny it is but but i will fist fight you over
this it's saw it's set i mean that that is in the rules yeah and you know based on kevin lowe's
linkedin posts i wouldn't mind burke taking a swing at him yeah but i i think you know in in
in actuality i look at that and i go that set us back 20 years because it was the nhl jams going
well just because it's a rule doesn't mean that we should do it which means that you're actively
not trying to make your team better the whole rule is make your team better and they also weren't
doing it right because the lion's share of offer sheets like since let's say 2005 were matched
you don't even remember most of them because they were matched shea weber a lot of people
forget that one because it was matched yeah even though it was 14 years or ryan o'reilly one with
calgary yes and he would have ended up on waivers somehow because they didn't know the they messed
up the offer sheet like it would have screwed them by doing the that's the most flames thing
ever by the way it was a terrible decision they saved themselves oh colorado saved uh the flames
yes from it wow ryan kessler was offer sheeted matched david backus was offer sheeted match
sebastian ajo was offer sheeted match and the ajo one is a great example of how not to do one
because i remember the day it was announced we were all like what a waste of time they just gave
them a good contract yeah it was eight and a half million no you have to grossly overpay dude if you
go and look at um if you go and look at leo carlson's contract grossly overpaid for at very
least the next two seasons minchukov even though he wasn't it doesn't sound like officially offer
sheeted i 100 believe he was given offer sheets and they gave the ducks the opportunity to like
pre-match yeah it doesn't sound like he accepted it yeah the ducks wanted to sign him to over
seven million dollars he's grossly overpaid based on how he's performed so far in his career
even barrett hayden at not even five million dollars he had like 20 points last year yeah
but that's the way to do it so then you're putting the other team in trouble if they do end up
matching at least there's this giant cap it on the book and like aho's deal throughout the entire
length he's still on it uh right now right the 8.7 yeah i don't know yeah yeah he should be in
and around yeah i know he is so uh like montreal just gave them a really good contract and he's
been on that great contract they won a cup like they beat them they contributed to the hurricanes
cup yeah they were able thank you mark bergerman yeah the hurricanes cap situation is so good
and aho's cap hit is so good that they were able to just healthy scratch his very cocky i mean
through the whole playoff and no one noticed or cared and that's that was the thing that always
bothered me with mark bergevin's offshore offer sheet i'm like you're you're not 10 toes down on
this if you were if you were you would have gotten 10 million and it's 10 million back then would
have been crazy money substantial but he's not on the contract oh he's not no 8.459 was the offer
sheet contract and then he signed the new deal that kicked in in 24 at 9.75 so still a great
deal but you look at like how little of a raise there is there like montreal you really should
have just done the 10 million if you're serious now marty marty baron made a really good point
on twitter and people clowned him because i and i don't blame people for clowning him for this but
marty baron is absolutely 100 right okay he said and i'm going to paraphrase that what's hidden in
this is how much money leo carlson is due on signing which is 20 million dollars and he said
this might shock you but most owners have all their money tied up in assets yeah they don't
just have 20 million sitting around yeah and that's i know people are like well the samuelis
are worth 65 billion dollars and we don't care whatever no no it's not that's that's outrageous
cope yeah 100 but beyond that marshalling 20 million dollars in seven days while you can do it
is actually very expensive because you either got to sell the asset and and find and turn it
around very quickly which makes it a distressed asset or you're borrowing it and you're borrowing
20 million dollars and what do you think the interest payments are on that what a pain in
the ass and then you eventually even it out and run it through the business but one sec when you
have when you've got to do that it's not just about getting the 20 million it's not just about
selling an asset or um uh you know finding a way to get liquid it's the headache of doing it
right it's patting in the ass pat for beak having to go to the samuelis and go
uh if we're gonna sign him you need to give me 20 you need to imagine going to your boss
and be like i need 20 million dollars like right next week and and every july 1st for the next
five or whatever it is like that it's also the relationship and the trust that was built between
Pat and the Samuelis who you know Pat's been there for you know I think it was Doug Murray
who was there before who's now an advisor in Philadelphia or Bob Murray who was fired for
bad workplace and then is now an advisor in Philadelphia help bring Leo Carlson to the
Ducks in the first place like this is there's a lot of I think people are underrating what
Marty Biron had to say I think that's a huge part of this it is but the reason I call it cope is
like the samuelis uh you know having all this money to throw around became a narrative literally
the day this was signed and never a day before because they were never a captain since one of
the ducks ever operated like that never stop it stop okay they're rich the owner is rich the ducks
are not do you see the difference yeah because it's a business to them yeah and they're fans
but it's a business to them yeah they don't they've never a day in their existence operated
like that stop stop so now my question to you guys is let's run through both scenarios let's
game plan this and let's start with they sign them ducks keep them my question number one is
how's that relationship between pat and leo
because pat doesn't strike me as a guy who forgets a slight and he might consider this a slight i
consider it you got caught with your pants down but you but you know there are people in positions
of power who are like i'm gonna remember this i think it's fine i think because you're signing
you're now agreeing to keep them there for next five years like you right you're you're signing
yourself up for the working relationship with leo carlson you're not going to hold resentment to him
when he's your star player that you're paying 18 million dollars okay the pavel minchukov contract
suggests he's over it you know what i mean like business it does walk him right to ufa at 26
that was the genius of the contract like it's very it's very well put together by
the flyers sucks to suck yep um so you think the relationship will be fine yeah okay i don't think
pat has an option yeah you have to be okay with this he matched it like what is he signing up for
that you know well he didn't match it yet yeah no but you're asking oh yeah yeah in this scenario
yeah yeah hypothetical sorry sorry i just want to be clear to everybody not you everybody on the
online hey it hasn't happened yet it changes the timeline of absolutely everything like even
the good solutions that i've heard hurt like oh um calorn and crider calorn and crider but like
um one person said let them walk and then use the assets that you get to well we're not in that
scenario right now we're right now hypothetical ducks have matched oh okay what's that relationship
like and how do the how do the ducks structure their cap because the other thing that's coming
up is beckett seneca in a couple years and he had a great rookie season and he's eligible for
extension next july 1st and you got a planned cap for that unless he completely pulls a rabbit
out of his head i think pat verbeek lost his job a few days ago like the the ramifications today
next week and going forward like
they might not recover from this for a generation like how do you so much of winning a stanley cup
and this is in itself a skill so i'm not necessarily talking about luck or chalking
anything up to luck like with the hurricanes or the panthers or whatever but so much of it
just timing and circumstance and how you managed your cap.
There's a reason like we whined and moaned about the lightning,
but a big reason for why they had all the talent on the roster that they did
for those back-to-back cups was how they managed the cap and the Vegas golden
nights that there's a reason that they won the Stanley cup in 2023.
And they've been a contender basically every year.
it's the way they manage their cap and then the panthers it's the way they manage the cap and
it's the reason that the panthers are going to be right back there next year the ducks even if they
find a way to maintain the talent that they have they're screwed so you've got leo carlson matched
yeah how many points did leo carlson have in the regular season this year guys
this much that's right six seven sixty seven how many points did beckett seneca have
is it more 69 jesse 72 he had 60 oh now leo carlson's played three years beckett seneca's
played one non-premium position right wing but going into negotiations next summer just put a
premium numbers that's all and you have cutter as well right wing seemed like a pretty premium
position when the leafs had to negotiate in 2019 yes it did yes it did funnily enough actually did
you guys to see this i sure did um leo carlson will be the second player in nhl history to lead
uh in money paid actual dollars real dollars uh the entire nhl uh the first guy to do it since
mitch marner what so in your so in mitch marner's fourth year in real dollars not not aav but real
dollars mitch marner was the highest paid player in the nhl leo carlson will be the highest paid
player in the nhl yeah and coming out of their elc yeah it's fourth year yeah yeah he was really
hard done by though yeah he was he was it's brutal yeah it's important to remember that um but you
know i'm always pulling for the little guy what's the okay so what's the never gonna get what's the
other side ever when we talk about when we talk about let's say let's say pat concedes and goes
okay leo you're going to philadelphia first off you said florida was gonna flip this table sorry
It's bolted to the floor, so it would have hurt.
So the Panthers, the Flyers get a 1-2 of Carlson Martone.
Oh my God, I forgot Martone earlier.
Porter Martone's unbelievable.
Yes, he's crazy.
Jesse, you're pad for beak.
You decide not to have Leo Carlson back because it's just too much
and it throws the cap too much,
but you're able to re-sign a guy like Cutter Gauthier.
Do you make the playoffs next year?
Do you expect to?
the ducks as a playoff team probably not i probably have them on the outside
they're in it but like i expect utah to be back kind of where they were get a little better
especially with benny trocek teams utah and a full season la i'll probably take out so it's utah
minnesota edmonton dallas colorado dallas colorado there's five i got in vegas yeah
obviously and then san jose a part of that circle maybe like now probably i think outside looking in
the mix la will be competing in it and then ducks in there as well and then the rest of the teams
were out of the playoffs and maybe they leap back in i don't know they'll be in there you do this
like a grown-up i do it like a child where i'm like okay who are the two or three teams who are
definitely in who are the two or three teams that are definitely out and then everyone else is in
the mushy middle yeah so out would have been st louis uh winnipeg seattle calgary chicago
vancouver nashville oh nashville they they had a good a little better they had a little push last
year to try and get in there plus they have centerman now mcfarland's made so many moves
that like i doubt he's done so they'll they'll be fighting for it like even even with all of the
minuses that they had i want to say opposite of additions uh to the roster that they had
this attraction it's just so yeah minuses talk about an off season like this we're just talking
about the minuses on a team i'm gonna keep saying it i like it go with it go with it that's the name
of the show but yeah do you guys have them as a playoff team i not without leo carlson i don't
because here's remember you got to remember this oh if they lose carlson no that's well that's the
whole question and and and remember that i wasn't paying attention until second round or until the
second round ended leo carlson led the entire nhl in the playoffs in scoring chances generated
you love guys named carlson i do no i don't i love this carlson and i think this guy's gonna
be the next star one of the next you know macklin obviously being the number one i think he's number
two i think it's crazy if you let him go because i think you can trade like we saw with dora fab
you can trade a winger who scores a few 40 goals right you can trade a goatee you can't let a leo
carlson go you can't and this does set the ducks back and i wonder how much here's what i question
i think they're going to move one of cologne and whatever you can even match this and worry about
that later but you're going to have to now attach something to get one of those deals off your books
crider or cologne i think it's most likely crider yeah but you sign if you sign leo carlson to 18
million dollars this season it sets you back this season if you don't sign them at all i think it
sets you back at least half a decade by the way both crider and cologne have 15 team no trade
lists too that should be enough to at least it's not a no movement clause yeah at least you have
something to work with where you just trade them without their permission you'll be able to sort
somebody will figure it out why does a quarter of the league or a third of the league have
some sort of no trade well david camp had it last year yeah because they're guys not in north
america anymore well the general manager gave it to him yeah he shouldn't have he shouldn't have
that bad gming good good agenting oh that's why yeah that's oh so we go back to the beginning
of this conversation where they don't really know what they're doing i've said this for over a
decade the only reason there's a stanley cup champion every year is because someone has to win
right yep i i look at nashville and i think yeah maybe that would be a fit because they're old
and they're like old guys or la they're old and they're like guys i think uh there'd be any number
of teams who'd be willing to get him like on the cheap like calorn crider one of those yeah both
of them either of them some teams could afford both of them i mean anaheim might have to retain
it's only a year left of each i think that's the opposite of what they're trying to do yeah no i
I don't think they could afford two out of them.
Yeah, they're trying to free up cap space, right?
Oh, then they're going to have to throw in some of those draft picks.
They're so fucked.
Yeah.
They have three second rounders next year.
And I know that they want to use those for the trade deadline.
But I think now we might be using that for the now deadline.
Potentially.
Maybe.
can a can can a situation be so bad that no matter what happens next and no matter what happened
before this it's a fireable offense i think i think what will happen is if they don't match
this pad for beak will be fired i think if they do match this they'll survive it and uh the ducks
we'll be fine how about okay so you're talking about um leo carlson's relationship with pad
for beak what about pad for beak's relationship going forward with the samuel well that's right
that's the thing like yeah would you like the person who cost you all that money and if you're
a player you don't have to sign anything he offers you no even even as an rfa even i mean goche kind
of does because he's a 10c or whatever group six or whatever they call it but uh uh you know if
You're back at Seneca.
You're going to be fully able to elicit offers.
Oh, yeah.
You don't have to sign anything they offer you.
You don't have to do anything.
Just wait.
And that goes for any RFA now.
Like, you know, who was it?
I think it was Dan Winnick, actually.
Former Leafs said, well, the Leafs better be careful.
Gavin McKenna.
I'm like, buddy, the guy's not even played a game yet.
What are we doing?
What are we doing?
24 months away, he hasn't played a game.
Like, just relax, Dan.
I was getting people commenting, like, I can't wait for the Gavin McKenna.
you're a wasted video oh that's fun that that is funny and i'm like you're gonna get harry palms
can you freaking chill he hasn't played a game yet that's ridiculous yeah see someone yeah well
i think i think that that you know danny briere being a target is interesting i want to kind of
talk about that guys because you know free said that he's a goal he'll definitely be a target
definitely a target okay okay um target how most of these guys don't have i started this we started
this segment jesse mentioned it i reinforced it foresight uh-huh this was coming the explosion
in the cap was coming we all knew that agents ignored it players ignored it general managers
ignored it and now we're here what do you mean danny briere is going to be a target you that
would require planning beyond the next five days which it seems to be impossible in the nh it is
The idea that the Leo Carlson offer sheet would make Danny Breer a target
implies that all GMs are motivated by vengeance and not making their team
better.
Right?
If it makes sense to target Danny Breer in the flyers,
then you target Danny Breer in the flyers.
Yeah.
You don't do it because you're mad.
You pants shitting baby.
I can't.
You do it because Pat for Beaks behalf,
by the way.
Yeah.
Why?
He doesn't work for you.
You don't work.
You're not co-workers.
What are you talking about?
Right?
You think you're motivated by hate.
The Philadelphia Flyers, all these years later, just screwed Cutter Gauthier out of money.
That's hate.
You think you're going to out-hate the Flyers?
Good luck.
I don't think that's going to work for you.
Not very well.
Mm-mm.
No, these guys were born in the hate.
I mean, it's Philadelphia.
Molded by it.
City of brotherly love.
except for when we're playing sports literally city of brotherly kick you in the fucking balls
and neck but that's love that it's in you know to some people for the for the right price like
listen i i don't believe the that briere is going to be a target for one second now
you know they have young players who are eventually going to come off their elcs that
makes them a target is jamie drysdale not an rfa right now he is is the offer sheet eligible
i'm sure he is i think you'd have to want him like okay where where is it i mean yeah
you're out of the way i sorry no drysdale offer sheet out the window
jesse stand up this is no drysdale offer sheet under under the desk where is it well that's oh
they're a target well that's a young d was good last year oh they have 29 million dollars in cap
space and they still have that doesn't sound like a very good target then they have nine million
dollars in cap space even if cutter signs well actually they've got 10 doesn't sound and i don't
think it should cost you 10 to lock up jamie drysdale yeah cutter you meant uh carlson sorry
carl uh carl no no no this a few years ago that would have made you're right yeah zgris is still
an rfa as well he is eligible for an offer sheet zgris and leo carlson absolutely just tearing up
the metro division just sickening yeah yeah i i just um i don't believe that i just don't believe
that it's a thing and if you're able to do it great good for you i don't think i don't think
you can i don't think you can and i don't think you will and as a content creator please do
i hope the flyers get off resheeted that's fucking amazing oh it'd be incredible it'd be incredible
yeah yeah are you joking yeah this this is let's call this what it is we've made
probably 50 or 60 videos in the past month easily and this is the most interesting offseason
in the nhl probably my entire time on youtube since 2007 name a better one like
there was i think it was was it 2016 when in the same half hour stamko signed his extension
suban was traded for weber hall was traded for larson like that was crazy that was an insane
single day but this off season as a whole the last two three weeks holy shit this is great for
the product like this is great for the league i think it's great for the players and the only
ones upset about it are the guys who have to work harder sorry that you are a multi-millionaire who
has one of the 32 nhl gm jobs in the entire world and now you have to do them you got to watch your
back good it's good for business it's good for competition what do you oh no oh no you who have
to compete for the stanley cup every year now have to compete yeah get good jesse remember that chart
you brought up after at the stanley cup finals where it was how these teams were constructed
right and both of them was majority traits yeah right is there a chance in a couple of years you
bring up a similar chart and i'm not saying 50 i'm not saying 20 but maybe five to ten percent
of any good teams are offer sheets that'd be interesting the hurricanes had one if you want
to split hairs i guess they did they didn't use them but right like like do you think that this
is because the question i always have and i'm recording agent provocateur later today
oh what are you going to talk about i imagine it might be this my question is is this going to be
sustained jess do you think this is just a one-time like dustin penner once in a generation
or are we going to see this again well it's two off seasons in a row we've had fun offer sheets
remember last year like doug armstrong did his wasn't that two years ago that was two years i
think it was two years ago okay two years ago but like it's becoming more consistent i think is the
point so yeah why not and and what what happened there doug backed off he gave them compensation
he didn't need to well there was that but also the oilers were stupid the oilers were stupid
and it might have cost them a cup probably did might have yeah probably did it they were
like we for like a month because i want to say that didn't happen until like late july or
sometime in august we kept looking at them and going what are they gonna do
and why isn't someone offer sheeted them the narrative used to be well yeah but no one does
that it's on the menu i'm numb yeah oh it's on the menu eat up it's great it's awesome
starting a new business is daunting there's a lot of noise out there and it was daunting for us too
specifically jesse when he tried to create our online platform but thankfully jesse you were
assisted by who shopify and how did they help you they helped me in every way because making a
website isn't entirely easy but they made it easy and and in terms of like our storefront because we
do sell merch and things like that shopify is like the thing that we use right yeah everything
it plugs and plays with the back end of the system so like every major whatever printing
platform you're on for your merch or if you sell it yourself you know and you're shipping
everything yourself it makes it really easy just to integrate all that and there isn't much to do

we'll find out exactly what happened but it has been a fun game plan hayton and goat and uh carlson
both matched yeah boo yeah that would be a boo do you guys think do you think that utah matches
i don't think they do i don't think they do they just got trocheck like do they need to
i know it's a second second round pick sucks is compensation but do you just kind of he's a fifth
overall pick but like if you're bill armstrong you didn't do that that was that was actually john
chayka um he wasn't a huge contributor to you last year maybe just take the asset and move on
i mean you've got schmaltz cooley and trocheck down the middle you're gonna pay him like five
million bucks to play where in your lineup left wing third line it's maybe just let him walk
because you brought in anders lee as well yeah it's not a great look why isn't sunny meta a target
why aren't we talking about that he probably doesn't have any rfas it's only danny briere
like because that that story is juicy like the the way the way that it's told in rumors is that
sunny meta and bill armstrong were talking at the draft yes they had a deal in place they did utah
balked and so sunny went nanani boo-boo offer sheeted him put 666 in the offer sheet because
we're the devil fuck you that's juicy and by the way that's also jersey and hell yeah rules that's
that's jersey for you i'm glad the metro division is starting to act like it yeah there are no
offer sheet candidates as far as i can see on the devil's roster it's not not today maybe next year
with um dawson mercer coming up but they'll have their homework done i think well then get good
get good get good is good for all of us raise the standard which is something the nhl hasn't
done for a long time let's raise the standard this is great for the product if you like watching
high-flying ridiculously skilled fun zoomies yep this is good for you i think you all do right
no we should all be happy about this uh claude geroux well perhaps not all of us uh philadelphia
connection there claude geroux apparently wanted to go to philadelphia and the and the rumor was
this weekend that he was also waiting to see if other teams changed their mind toronto apparently
offered the most money uh which tells me i think dakota joshua is out but we can get to that in a
second yeah um the the thing is it looks like he's going back to ottawa because the the leo carlson
thing held up philadelphia and they're not sure how their cap's going to play out because they
also have to sign drysdale so shrew might not even fit there anymore so it looks like back to
ottawa he is going back to ottawa has it officially been signed dollar uh um contract one year uh for
claude drew in ottawa is that more than a v uh two million dollar cap hit i should say aav is
five million dollars though because of three million dollars in performance bonuses it is a
no movement clause and 1.5 million for 10 games played 500k for 40 games played and 500k for each
conference final and a stanley cup appearance so there you go wait a second like games he gets 500
grand per game uh it would be for each of making each it says for each of uh conference finals and
stanley cup so puck peter writes it there so yeah total it could be five million dollars he could
make but right now the cap it's two million dollars you could expect it to be at least
the 10 games played for the 1.5 million and then assume the 500k so throw on two million there so
it's going to be a four million dollar contract there for claude drew at least that's pretty fair
and bet money the nhl tries to shut that shit down next cba 10 performance bonuses well just
specifically the 10 games one you think so tip i mean like listen get your money i don't i don't
care but it's very obviously just kicking the cap hit to the next year no because if there's
room on your cap currently it stays on this year's books but if you spend to the cap then it's an
overage charge right and then it'll go to next year so it could still be on this year's books
but it allows you to spend more money at the time to not worry about that cap because you can punt
it down but you eventually have to pay and you can yeah where where are they like the ottawa
center yeah and you can go 10 over uh on the cap in the right in the off season anyway yes without
any penalties they have 4.195 million dollars in cap space right now okay okay they got a little
they technically could fit the contract okay because it'd be just an extra three million
dollars to get it up to that five total if they went to the conference finals and stanley cup
i got it two first round picks in 29 that looks so silly i know they'll be grateful though
yeah it's uh uh so claudio not being available uh to philadelphia or to toronto is is interesting
him coming back because that that negotiation if i remember correctly to resign last year was
actually quite it got it took a while if i remember i think it was contentious so it's
it's interesting that he kind of went out there and thought about it and whatever i'm bummed that
he didn't end up with the leaves because i think he had a great year last year um would have been
great on the on the third line but it does speak to what it seems like the leafs want to do too
and i wanted to get to that because you know we've been wondering about like roster construction and
one guy's contract that really sticks out to people is okay you have dakota joshua why did
you get to him and i think that's because there are two guys still left to move on this roster
and dakota joshua was one of them morgan riley's probably the other and they're still saying 75
percent he's moved i wouldn't know where or for what but dakota joshua is an interesting guy
because that's a guy who a couple of years ago was awesome and has had cancer since and then
a lacerated spleen last year and a couple other injuries too just ridiculously unlucky but there's
a player in there i like him it's just an expensive player right now where did this come from because
we did the roster like what was it four days ago or something there was no discussion about moving
off of josh it's because there's your route it's because the leafs were ready to bring him in up
until he signed with Ottawa and that's what I'm like okay so because Joshua already doesn't fit
the Leafs can afford their team now they can afford this team they can't afford to add to it
in any meaningful way right so the fact that there's evidence out there that they are trying
to add to it makes us go okay well who are they taking off well they're not taking off any of the
new guys that just signed them they're not taking off Austin they're not taking off
Nylander the theoretically there could still be a nice deal out there but I don't think so
so it leaves you with very few options and the guy I land on is Joshua yeah I just curious to
me that he's the guy when you look at it it's like okay they didn't get Giroux why wouldn't
you just be happy with the roster now well maybe they are because I don't know I thought they I
thought they landed at the end of free agency on a pretty solid hey we got 12 guys here plus i guess
13 including lorenz in that and there isn't more moves to make from that group maybe the way they
look at it is uh we like our team we want to get better oh oh we can't do better all right well
then we like our team right and if you want to add jeru you have the space to do it well you'd
have to move somebody off of it but i would take away from the defense if you're doing the morgan
riley deal because then there's more than enough to do that part of me is like why'd you sign
roslevic then like i don't know but like okay let's let's glean some things from this so drew
can play center he's not a full-time center he's just like an yeah an option like can take face
offs for you right-handed he's a right winger i keep going back to right-handed he's a right
winger but right-handed right shot it's still something that i think this team feels like they
lack and they still don't have a ton right they added but uh Nylander Roslevic Sissons that's it
right and obviously Radish on the back end that's it they they want some more right-handed players
in their lineup yeah that's something I've been hammering for a long time when we're gonna need
it only righty on the in the core but um I think like if you're adding Giroux that means there's a
Morgan Riley trade to make like it didn't feel it didn't feel like it was Giroux you got to swap
about joshua well i never understood that no no i i agree with you i thought for joshua i i i you
know are you uh like what are you expecting from this player right what what's their role are they
a three million dollar fourth liner which is you know pretty normal now um oh my god if joshua was
an unrestricted free agent he would have got the chanter juneau deal he would have gotten at least
the brandon duane deal yeah yeah yeah which isn't much more than he's making right now much less
he's a duane's 2.6 yeah oh sorry yeah he's not making much more than the duane deal yeah yeah
yeah i don't know like to me it was like well where does that where does it all fit in and
you're probably not trading one of the guys you just signed no 100 so yeah like up front there's
just not a lot of options for guys to take away but like you said uh joshua losing joshua like
even if it's for a draft pick doesn't do much for you trading morgan riley potentially does
And it's pretty clear Max Domi's not going to play.
It's looking that way.
Yeah, it looks more and more likely that, yeah,
that's just not an option anymore.
I'm trying to figure out.
If he does play, like, they're over the cap then already.
And they're trying to add Drew.
You know what I mean?
So it seems obvious if they're trying to add.
I mean, it's not obvious.
It's just true.
Like, if they want to add to this team, someone's got to go.
No matter who that someone is.
What do you think that, you know, San Jose and Anaheim were two teams that I thought,
oh, maybe we know that Morgan was willing to go to both of those places.
They don't need him now, right?
Like Anaheim can't afford him.
Well, the Ducks literally can't.
San Jose probably could, but why would they?
They've got a bunch of extensions to worry about, and they've already got two big defensemen
that most people would agree are overpaid.
So I have a hard time imagining them getting a third.
Where else would he go?
I have no idea.
like let's overthink it um riley for crider saves the ducks money not a lot but it does
million bucks yeah like i'm not saying that's the deal but i don't know let's get nuts right
if you still want to do it this is what you have to do in order to afford it yeah or you know and
then you're only on a one-year deal rather than four more which riley has rise four more years
what's what's vitrano's deal uh it's four points something and he's got
deferred money deferred money let me pull it up um it's a bizarre deal oh yeah the leafs don't
want to tie a sweetener okay riley is at least an nhl player vitrano i don't know what are the
ducks willing to tie to vitrano vitrano had nine points in 50 games oh i know oh i don't want him
4.571
for how long though
three more years oh two more years
this year and next year two more years
and deferred money no like
money is it's the Leafs who cares
at least Riley
plays hockey yeah he can be in your lineup
I'm spitballing
I'm trying to figure it out and I'm just
saying I'm not saying stop spitballing
I'm just saying that's not the guy
yeah like if it's
Chris Kreider for instance if
he would even accept a chance at the least first off he's a lefty don't necessarily want that uh
50 points at 75 games last year 22 goals that's attractive right alex calorn on the last year of
his deal 6.2 million dollars he also shoots left but he can play the right side uh 33 points in 82
listen you call this are you trying to do a morgan riley deal yeah steve was like is the right is
the cap space that they're gaining isn't enough yeah because morgan makes seven and those two
guys just named make six plus right so that doesn't make sense for the duck side do you take
aj greer just sign there now video games taught me that that actually makes you look bad yeah it
does and if you sign a guy and then trade them that makes you look bad and then people don't
sign with you but it's actually true that it does make you oh do you imagine if like that was
announced today like rostovic has no trade protection they could do them they could deal
them right now just trade them we'd all be like john shake is a monster well still not worse than
vegas though and they would do that they haven't though they haven't that is true i wouldn't be
shocked in the least but they also haven't done it right right yeah it's just not someone something
someone does there have been more offer sheets than people doing that right right anyway it's
the darnell nurse deal with edmonton and san jose like toronto should i don't i guess my career just
didn't want riley over nurse because i think at this point you probably take what nurse provides
over morgan riley but if they could have found a way to do that deal i think there might have
been a missed opportunity there because they were looking for that guy they got two they got a nhl
player and a legitimate prospect for nurse and they didn't have to hold any of the cap hit or
anything like full retention i'm not tying a thing to mo yeah no shot it just there's a team who was
looking for a guy in his 30s as a defenseman to play on the back end and nhl experience and
there was a slot there for morgan there and i guess they just couldn't do it what if all of
a sudden mo's a luxury for you well if he's playing third pair minutes i think he's great
or second or like his five on five time doesn't move his no his time's got to be 18 minutes or
under every night well that's what i'm saying like if he's not playing on the power play it'll be
super easy to keep him that number like part of the reason he was at that number is because of
the power play yeah he's not going to be there they just signed darren radish they were trying
to get zach warrensky like we're talking about claude geroux they were trying to get zach
warrensky and let's say nize was part of that deal that would have added like two million to the cap
roughly they're trying stuff they're still out there super active like someone's got to go yeah
clearly someone's got to go and we're running out of options well riley seems like number one
to go and there was freach i think freach capped it at 75 joshua is a total assumption
yeah riley there was a legit noise around like joshua i'm just like well
you're the odd man out yeah you know it'll be it'll be fascinating to see how they handle it
now i don't know if you saw craig berube was on a podcast i don't listen to podcasts um oh you
don't okay well that's good uh rob simpson uh has a podcast that's a joke and he said
basically i'll just quote it because we can we can play the clip or i can just quote it i think
we should play you want to play the clip all right so first off the the first thing i want
you to notice when we show this is craig berube's camera placement um it's incredible look at this
like that is hello dad look at those hold on hayden take our look at those forearms man uh-huh
holy um yeah those uh those forearms beat the shit out of people for a living they sure did
um anyway uh let's have a listen to what berube said about losing mitch marner
oh mitch barner really for sure okay so i thought mitch mitch was the energy and the you know he
he brought the energy and the emotion to the game i thought on a nightly basis and in practice you
know um vocal guy you know chatted a lot on the bench chatted a lot in practice brought the energy
You know, if he came back to the bench, he let guys know, you know, pick it up.
Let's go.
You know, he was great.
I thought I really enjoyed coaching him.
So when he left, I guess then not only did you lose one of your offensive talents
or your all-around talents, you lost – you were devoid of an emotional centerpiece.
uh i thought we lost our emotional leader for sure you know that's just not good enough from
some of the guys who are still on this team and like this is where like i'm not gonna take a shot
at mitch this has been a pretty consistent criticism of this leafs team dating back to
like when they had wayne simmons in the uh i think that was the canadian division bubble year
um he they had him he was performing well he got hurt and the team started not doing very well and
there were times where he was like up on like the second line but like typically he wasn't
playing very much and they talked about like yeah but he's loud on the bench
like practice is important um mitch no one doubts his hockey iq he's a brilliant hockey mind so i'm
not surprised at all to hear he was loud and always giving his teammates feedback but this
has been a consistent criticism of the leafs for over half a decade now that um they need
babysitters they need they need toughness babysitters which they've gotten consistently
over the years these guys do the the grunt work and we're not going to lift a finger
and they need guys who are going to motivate the troops
and motivate the rest of the team and talk.
Oh, for the love of God.
Like, listen, Matthews, let's say he gets back to what he was,
which I think we would all love very much.
I think they need it.
They 100% need it.
Like 50 goal.
Let's go back a couple of years.
He scored 69 goals.
They finished third in the division.
I was like, guys, if he scores 50 goals next year, they have to make up 19 goals.
And they didn't finish close to the top of the division.
I don't think we're understanding that.
And then he scored way less than 50.
Yep.
It was a massive problem.
Let's say he gets back to that.
The C on your chest, it's not enough.
And that sounds absurd.
Asking for more than 60 goals from someone.
is is that seems it's completely unreasonable i totally understand but it's not just austin
it's willie it's jt who has been incredible and i know he's been a mentor to these guys
if he's back it's riley like darren radish is going to come into this team and nick paul is
going to come into this team who is brandon hagel who is that guy who is night in and night out
going to challenge guys who are two three inches taller than him and 10 10 to 20 pounds heavier
than him knocking them out at center ice doing the two little shit doing the sleep shit you need
loud participants in your hockey matches and they just don't have that yeah and craig ruby here
officially joins the hockey media circle because now he's talking about mitch marner
yes on podcasts and going viral for it so welcome ruby after your uh free agent frenzy day on tsn
you're now officially here because i'm talking about mitch so congratulations but the thing
like even more so on the ice what i i don't think it's that salacious and what he's saying because
it's true that off the ice marner would be the guy who'd like host the party hey we're doing
whatever halloween party or whatever it's going to be at marner's place or they're all getting
together at the cottage or whatever marner would be that guy who's doing that if they're eating
lunch in between the morning skate and after in the game there like he's at the table with
everybody and austin's kind of always been a little more i don't above it isn't the right
word but not that guy who's like getting everybody together so just in that respect from the coach
who's seeing the team operate day to day for two years he's just illustrating yeah when mitch left
we missed what mitch brought emotionally to the locker room which was something that was
um very effective in terms of team bonding i'm not even asking austin to be that person
like i'm not asking him to be someone that he's not but part of leadership is understanding uh
what you lack like understanding what your weaknesses are and looking around you and
identifying okay who can fill this gap like we're losing mitch okay he brought this this and this
on the ice okay that's great that's where i would have loved him to go to management but again
yeah see how i'm lifting a finger okay well he didn't do that and then there's the off the ice
stuff which no one is going to know that better than you you've been here since 2016 oh yeah
and i i didn't do it can i tell you what i took from that it wasn't about mitch at all like i
that doesn't surprise me you lost a good player you lost a good person what gets me is i mean it
it speaks to why the guys partially were so flat last year because that was the thing it was like
why are all of you underperforming all at once and sniping at each other like less than a month in
yeah ruby is also punting responsibility here that's where i wanted to go uh-huh who's in
charge of those guys the guy talking about how losing mitch marner uh took some emotion away
from the team well craig uh maybe that's your job here to inject some of that emotion in team
bonding yeah i drove a lambo like a jeep um like uh you're that's so true i like listen the the
locker room stuff i believe him i'm not gonna just be like yeah craig berube's a liar but like
no coach has ever been like i just straight up did a bad job with that yeah craig berube here
is saving a little face being like ah you know what we lost mitch and it's not my fault that
the locker room sucked and everybody hated me and nobody wanted to play for me yeah because
mitch is gone like it is it is coming across like that this is why jeff teague has such a fascinating
spot in uh like sports media so jeff jeff teague for those of you who don't know you ought to but
if you don't know he's a former nba player very famously made the all-star game once um shout out
DeMar DeRozan but his whole thing is talking about his NBA career and being like I stunk
like I am dying for that in the NHL where and the thing is Jeff Teague didn't stink but he talks
about himself like there was another tier to this I would love to hear Craig Berube or some other
coach or some other player who was legitimately good be uh have the humility to be like here's
all the mistakes i made i'd love to know about the mistakes that he made what do you think were
the mistakes that you made last year craig is the answer none wrong i don't think he's there to talk
about that publicly i think it is why not not yet oh he's not there to be interesting that's what
guests are i think in his interview with the oilers he's probably talking about what he would
change and what he would do with that team but i don't think he wants to give steve dangle that
information no no and he's still looking for a job so i get it like jeff t's done playing and
everything but you know i put it this way guys who aren't looking for the next job are always
going to be the more honest ones yeah whereas this guy's not you always got to take what he's
saying with a grain of salt totally you're looking to read his book 20 years from now when he's done
in hockey you know like i was about to say 20 years that's way too always in hockey yeah 20
years might not be enough yeah now craig roubaix here is still i think wanting to head coach a team
yes you know so he's gonna be he's gonna be a little not so honest about these these this
situation with the Leafs yeah like well you know I refuse to use a young player in my final two
months and uh like I'd love to know about all that two months ago like he was still trying to hold
on to that job hey we we thought that he might get I thought I thought Keith Pelley might step
in and keep him there but thankfully he got talked out of that have you noticed the incredible
improvement in mood with the drop in how often we hear keith pelly's name yep yep it's so good
yep stay behind the scenes do not get in front of a microphone go yes um keep go on girl give
us nothing uh simon awesome simon nevich just signed a contract yes five years 7.25 million
dollars per year which is a lot less than i thought he was going to get to be honest me too
I thought he was going to get 25 mil.
The way everything's going.
You know, obviously there are defensive deficiencies here,
but this is a right-shooting 22-year-old defenseman
who can move a puck.
Second overall pick.
Second overall pick.
From four drafts ago.
This deal does walk him right to UFA at 27,
but I feel like if he has an okay year,
so he had 26 points in 68 games last year.
It wasn't great, but obviously he was blocked in that lineup
by you know dougie hamilton luke hughes things like that for those that power play time this
guy's gonna run the power play and he's gonna compete with guys like zane perek who i'm still
i still think they're gonna trade zane perek but that's just my me um simon emmich to me
is a guy who's a candidate for great value contract in like a year because if you can
get him to 50 points i think uh two months adam yeah i think i think it's a great deal now this
might be this might be the the flames best contract yeah he's he's gonna be like listen
they're not i don't think they're gonna be very good i don't think flames fans think they're gonna
be very good i don't think the calgary flames think they're gonna be very good but this guy's
gonna put up a ton of points on the power play he's gonna get all kinds of opportunity goals
will find their way to the back of his net but they're gonna be a okay okay and they did buy
a year of free agency oh they're not i thought so free agency that last year of the deal is a
free agent year okay which would make sense then why he you know a little bit more money i guess
get good adam i know good terrible um the flames yeah are not supposed to be very good interesting
with the flames i forgot ryan strome was a flame by the way um same they got morgan frost coming
up here ufa at the end of this season ryan strome is obviously a flame um uh they've got some
interesting sort of things that i think that they can do to get better like when i look at the flames
roster my question is do you do you move some of these veteran guys for more futures or more young
players or do you just keep it the way that it is so you're not horrible and you're not the black
hawks you don't want to clean it completely out so people don't want to come play with you like
what do you do uh the deeper we get into july i think the the less likely it is they move off of
guys because i think their value goes down and down and down and then the closer we get to
valentine's day their value goes up and up and up and up keep them play them trade them for a first
okay okay right all right you got a decent little haul for uh blake coleman and oli mata you did
you did sorry i have to put my phone on uh on hotspot because the internet has for whatever
reason gone out oh no it's back again okay um but yeah no you did it wasn't bad it wasn't bad
those are guys man like olimata's had a really underrated nhl career he's been a bit of a
suitcase and like blake coleman turns it on in the playoffs which he hasn't been able to do
for a number of years on account of they haven't made it um you got good assets for them great
but the more guys sign the more those spots fill up the more their value goes down hold on to them
just wait you'll be fine and just get a haul get a friggin haul at the deadline yeah yeah i mean
the cap space accrued oh it's going to be insane this this could be a really could be crazy yeah
like like looking forward to to the trade deadline how many teams are going to go into this year as
cap teams it's gonna be less than last year for sure and i think it's going to continue to be
less and less and less yeah and like the all this double retention stuff it's stupid that they got
rid of it but you're gonna need it less and less maybe that's part of the reason they got rid of
it is they're like guys you're not gonna need this give this concession you're all gonna make
leo carlson's gonna make 18 million dollars guys you're gonna be fine right yeah maybe maybe that's
how this works calgary's i okay it's not good to be bad but if you're gonna be bad you might as
well do it properly tell me on if i'm a season ticket holder sell me on renewal what am i selling
we got some exciting young players and you're gonna see them a lot and we're gonna do the sea
of red and we're gonna have a really loud goal horn and hey do you hate the oilers oh we still
hate them too and last year the great last year at the saddle them too this is it is it then yeah
i actually think colorado colorado calgary is gonna surprise some teams i think they'll be
better than we think they will be i don't think they're a playoff team but i think they'll be a
little higher in the standings than they were last year it's a good league like it's coronado
zary now you had nemich and parekh like that's a good little four core there of young players
I'm excited to see what Gradeen does too, Jess.
Totally.
Dustin Wolfe in net, like I think...
Bounce back season.
He can steal any game he wants if he's having a...
Or if he's on his game all season long.
Like I think they're going to hang because the easiest way to be bad
is have terrible goaltending and they don't have that.
Yeah.
Well, he was bad last year.
He was really bad last year.
Yeah, but I don't believe that that's Dustin Wolfe.
Huberto gets back to over 100 points.
I don't know about that.
With his injury stuff that he's been battling through last couple years.
I said that with a straight face.
someone hire me to be an actor right now uh someone hire me to be an actor right now is it
good or bad for them to be okay i think it's okay because they have enough pieces where you can take
a little step here and then keep building towards the next year after that like you'll get assets
where you don't have to be last in the league to to get back into where you want to be in terms of
competing for like a stanley cup and amongst the top teams in the league like they have a nice
young core here that they can just kind of get a little better each year going forward hot take
nhl players are too good for you to bank on being bad on purpose and all the teams who try it
oversell yeah the flame should be weary of overselling yeah and i like i don't think they
have the the most to sell like i think you can hang on to a lot of these guys and just compete
in a lot of games next year white cloud if you chose to move off him you could get an absolute
heist for i think but beyond him yeah i agree with you there's not a whole lot here every guy
you think they should sell is signed to multiple years except for strome how the hell did they even
get strong they must have traded for him yeah we can we can click and find out if you really want
to know but no i don't know you you uh i think you want to know i guess i don't know it's july
yeah yeah i do want to know if this was october adam would be like no moving on exactly acquire
ryan strome from the ducks for a 2027 seventh round pick on march 6th there you go why all
right cap space cool yeah but why did calgary do it to have a player and play center for them that
they they can move at this upcoming deadline for a lot more than a seventh round pick you know what
all right yeah plus you need people to play for them and they didn't really have that
uh at the end of last year right because of all the selling they did so now you see what you got
this season rhinestone which probably isn't a lot but we'll see i don't think calgary is going to be
like terrible no like i don't think they're going to be like oh they're vancouver from last year
where they're far and away 32nd in the league if this isn't this isn't the mid 2010s anymore
and the bottom of the west isn't great where they can win games you know and if you're absolutely
right about that jesse like that's the thing if you do end up bad um landon dupont for we haven't
done a ton of talk about the 2027 draft but it'd be pretty good that kid's gonna be stupid good
do you think we'll get the first overall pick next year the least yeah yeah this every time
they miss the playoffs they get the first overall they get the first overall literally the last two
times well they've missed the playoff then i think i'm the first overall time ought to be the charm
yeah oh wait oh the leafs don't get this pick yeah no lane to dupont they can't get the first
overall pick no sorry what i meant to say is i've never seen any of his footage i bet he sucks i
bet he's terrible no hayden and i have been doing big dubs all year and he's stupid so alexander
ovechkin's coming back uh and i feel bad for darren drager because he's just like well it looks like
he's not and then but he said it on the radio in such a way that he's like all signs are pointing
to but he didn't definitively say it but overdrive but overdrive sent out a tweet and they're like
they're like yeah he's not coming back and then some poor kid is probably writing those tweets
like somebody's just trying to break into the industry uh they i don't think they quoted him
inaccurately okay well i i mean listen i heard i like how that's the drama you guys starting with
well i mean it was people are man and i think i think david pagnotta got it this weekend too
because he said
Drew's signing with the Flyers.
Oh, no.
But, you know, like,
hey, man, shit changes.
And until the ink is signed,
you don't know, right?
That's when you break the trade
is when it's actually signed
or break the free agency.
But anyway,
Ovi is coming back.
I think it happened
Thursday afternoon,
but it didn't make Friday's show.
Right.
So, yeah, now we chat about it.
So, good.
Yeah.
Great.
I mean, listen,
he's not,
what did it take
until game 81 last year
before he got a defensive zone start?
like this is a power like you think patrick line is a power play specialist wherever he signs
that's what ovi is going to be well he became a healthy scratch specialist ovi is actually a
power play specialist that's you're right you're very very right about unless by the way i choose
if line a signs with the leafs he's great uh excellent just letting you know oh yeah um i
think i think it's first off it's great that ovi's coming back i think the washington capitals
clearly built a team that can survive his departure right that's why they loaded up
it didn't even look like they needed him no you know and now it's just extra well where do you put
him because to me it's like i put him in as a as a fourth line guy and then he does throw him out
there for the power play here he comes ov even if he's on your top line or second line like he's
playing third line minutes yes if that makes sense yeah of course like you it can't be like
cristiano ronaldo where like having him out there the full 90 minutes actually puts you behind
yeah i don't know if you saw that portugal game but it's like christian christiano you should be
playing like 15 minutes buddy jesse you saw him play i did yeah he doesn't he doesn't like go over
half he just kind of circles in his own area and when everybody else does the work he kind of just
jumps in he's like okay pass me the ball now so it can't be that that's for no no need to heavily
shelter players at the elite level but like this is the guy you will 32 goals last year yeah like
Unless, let's not be confused that Ovi's still very talented.
He's one dimensional.
Yeah.
And he doesn't play a lot of defense or whatever,
but he's still going to give you, I don't know,
16, 15 minutes a night of a scoring ability.
What can't you do?
I don't think I like that.
Well, you better be able to score.
Oh, it says here that you're the best goal scorer of all time.
Yeah.
So, like, I think you tolerate it.
You put up with it.
The scoring depth on the Caps.
Dude, their power play is going to be psychotic every night.
i'm also surprised by the sound that just came out of me i i think it's going to be an incredible
incredible offensively capable lineup they're gonna get saves they're like there's every reason
to think they're going to contend for and make the playoffs puckpedia currently has ovechkin
strom tuck protest dubois wilson leonard jenner kairu protest sword thief uh bovillia kairu on
the third line i know it's not going to work out that way but that's hilarious it's a big
ugly mean skilled team is the best right side in the league talk wilson kairu who cares right
oh yeah right side i'm trying ugly ugly who would who would be able to compete with that
no one i'm trying to vegas depending on how they set it up well vegas had
right side marner dorafaev and now they don't yeah oh yeah it's no dorafaev right it's it's
really good that's really and then yeah the left side is ovi protis leonard protis maybe
you know you probably maybe switch around because steve's so adamant about playing the pro tie
together yeah they have to play together protis jenner protis would be fun uh if they could do
that one would have to play on their offhand but they could figure it out like is beauvillier on
this team you know come the beginning of the season i don't know actually what am i talking
about you can't have a protest on the right wing because you need you have tuck wilson kairu well
i got great news for you one of them play center yeah so i guess yeah one of them can just center
a line there then the other one on the left it's a beautiful problem to have for the caps it
unfortunately might not make sense for the pro tie to play together yeah like maybe on a second unit
power play or something like that um but that's a great forward group i also think last year they
were just unlucky in a lot of respects because their goal differential was positive and they
just lost out on a bunch of shootout no t games and if a couple of those just go a different way
this is a playoff team and we probably look at them a little bit differently but if they just
got the time off here where everybody just got a few extra weeks to regroup instead of losing and
maybe round one or two,
like this is going to be
one hell of a season
for the Cavs.
Yeah, they're an incredible
lineup with no flaws.
Here, can you bring up
their decor real quick?
You don't like their decor?
I didn't say that.
Oh, now I am.
No, it's,
I don't like their,
I don't like their right side.
It's adequate.
It's adequate.
Given their goal tending,
given their scoring,
they're going to be fine.
Yeah, it's Chikrin,
Matt Roy,
Farah Bari,
Lilligren,
Hudson,
the other Hudson,
Deharnais,
and Hall.
No, Steve,
Lilligren's numbers
are great underlined.
stop it um oh and hall and uh sorry sandeen as well who's on ir oh so it'll be chikrin
sandeen uh roy lilligren and day harney uh you know what that's not bad that's fine that's fine
they can you're right they can move the puck i like furivari a lot i think i like him defenseman
oh yeah i like him i think hudson's gonna be really good i think chikrin's underrated they're
gonna score a ton of goals yep lilligren's best player in the league that's kyle dubas
Justin Hall.
Greatest 17th overall pick of all time.
And also a capital, so how dare you.
Can I just throw something at you guys?
Are we done with the caps?
The OV deal.
Steve hates it.
What is it?
Steve said, oh, this is the worst deal in the world.
They're going to take this away from the players.
When he plays 10 games, he gets $4.75 million.
Stop.
So in reality, this is a $9 million contract.
But because it is a $4.25 million cap hit right now,
they can spend up to the cap and push that extra four point seven five million dollars to next
season because this is clearly a go for a year and if they do have that space they can save that
five million bucks and put it on this year's cap but i don't imagine they will because i mean it's
a sham yeah it's a shame and i don't blame the caps for it at all steve hates the city of
washington and no how dare you no i'm a big supporter of uh frederick where do they play
out of are they in dc yes is the arena i don't know no but they threaten to move to like virginia
maryland or something i don't remember there's so many little spots and when i was there i drove
through like three states i think i slept through one of them like i was oh maryland virginia and dc
yeah they're all anyway steve you hate this no no no it's wonderful for the caps really really
good for them i hate it i think i think batman hates it i think batman hates it well batman
should negotiate a better deal next time i agree the players get nothing out of these cba
negotiations and they finally have something that works in their favor yeah and batman hates it i
think it's okay okay he's gonna have to work i'm sorry i'm gonna cut you off daniel alfredson's
joining the leafs coaching staff what just announced um freege broke daniel alfredson
daniel alfred i was like i'm sitting here listening to you guys talk about the caps
i just don't give a shit i really want to talk about daniel alfredson it's just officially
broken so i'm sorry is there a different daniel alfredson uh no it's the same one we don't know
exactly what he's going to be coaching but i thought it was interesting a that he was with
the senators last year on their coaching staff b who's leaving uh mike van ryan i'm okay and what
did he do power play no he was there he was their defense coach and it doesn't make any sense for
daniel alfredson well one though coach lolon maybe defense coach oh i hope not he did it he did a
good job he did a good job i didn't mean he was leaving i said does the lawn be the does he move
to the defensive coach and alfredson goes to power play possible so here's the thing we were barking
up the wrong tree we kept looking at like swedish players and are the leafs going to draft stenberg
because of sundine okay they didn't do it oh did they get airson because of sundine and then they
let him go daniel alfredson's matt sundin that is he like they were opposing captains and we
liked to imagine them whatever the anti of shipping is we imagine that they hated each other
because they were rival captains um no those guys are buds they won a gold medal together with
sweden i wow that's completely out of left field what's worse daniel alfredson going to detroit or
daniel alfredson going to as a player or daniel alfredson going to toronto as a coach this is
100 times worse this is worse you guys think jesse do you agree i think that's worse is it
100 times worse what is ottawa not like detroit it's weird it's a weird thing i did mike van
ryan was i think he it was reported that he left he's leaving the toronto organization at the end
of june so there was a space there you go just in case you weren't aware um and daniel alfredson i
don't know because he was in charge of the senator's power play which was the worst power
play ever imagined in the playoffs but now it's great cool so yeah let's bring that guy was it
bad or was the hurricane no it was bad now i remember i remember now watch it i was about
to say no the hurricanes pk was great and the hurricanes pk was great but i remember now
watching and uh yeah there was that wasn't it like two five on threes they couldn't get there
There was a five-on-three with their season on the line down 2-0,
and it was the worst five-on-three in franchise history
considering the circumstances.
Now, you've got to remember, Jesse, Daniel Offensen is a Leaf now,
which means it was the players' fault.
Yes.
They couldn't execute.
No.
I think we've got to ask, did Ottawa's media run him out?
Oh, 100%.
Yeah.
Oh, making up rumors.
Can you imagine Brent Wallace and Jason York and Julian McKinney?
Yorkie, you wear this.
you wear this it's probably julian mckenzie's fault oh absolutely yeah asking brady kachuk
all those questions about the things that he said live on a podcast well and i heard julian
mckenzie works for a bunch of leafs fans oh right ultimate betrayal and so this is okay so this is
what happened they got him to run alfredson out of ottawa and into toronto uh sleeper cells they're
brilliant they're brilliant here brilliant men who are those people i'm gonna make a red thread
about that uh yeah the this is i mean just forget what he's actually going to do because we don't
really know yet but that is a monumental thing and that must have been a decision that he agonized
over don't you think uh i would imagine because he had a job in ottawa like it's not like he didn't
have a job yeah but this this completely goes beyond what he does this is this is about what
this means right this is the it felt right that the Sens repaired their relationship with Daniel
Offenson because that's part of the reason why he left for Detroit um it felt right that they
repaired the relationship with him they had him around the team that is a deep part of your
culture that's why it felt great that Matt Sundin returned in whatever role they made up a role
with a senior executive advisor what the hell is that that's not a thing until it is and it got
you mad sundine back and it feels right and it felt right at a time where we badly needed something
that felt right alfredson leaving for the leafs it's not even about whether or not he does a good
job it's that's that's got to be a real dick punch for sense fans well i guess at the end of the day
the swedish connection is bigger than the rivalry that ottawa and toronto have apparently i'm
bringing my swedish brethren who i'm good friends with to my team that's what that's what seems like
happened here so we know for sure it's coaching staff and not any kind of management coaching
staff yeah interesting is it one of potentially like you know how teams will have a goaltending
coach and then they'll like have a head of goaltending he's not even getting like that
i don't we that's all we know is he's joining the leafs coaching staff i think you'll just be
assistant to jim hiller because dj smith was going to be the guy right now he's one of the highest
paid assistants in the league because edmonton tried to keep him away from toronto so he'd be
on babcock staff smith ran a pk yeah i don't know i'm just saying that's who jim to alfredson's
credit in the sense credit the sense power play during the regular season last year was eighth
overall in the league and the year before that they were 11th well let's start there during the
playoffs they were uh last at 4.6 percent let's start there let's start there let's just start
with regular season good power play again and we'll worry about failing out in the playoffs
later yeah well yeah because now we're at okay let's just get back let's get back yeah just get
back in just get back in i yeah what do you think that first time back in ottawa is going to be
because now Ottawa's got two major returns,
Kachuk and Alfredson.
And Alfredson's already done this.
Obviously, he's not going to get booed.
Would he be, like...
I don't think it is obvious.
You think he might get booed?
He left.
What did they...
They don't give coach, assistant coaches...
This is Daniel.
Like, what is...
It's Daniel Alfredson.
What is he...
What's going to happen?
What do you think is happening?
They do pre-game announce it.
Yeah.
Or, like, maybe, like,
they find out he's running the power play,
and every time the Leafs get a power play,
like, just...
Alfie.
Boo the shit out of him.
It would be very funny if they do a welcome back to Daniel Alfredson
and he's assistant coach of the Leafs and he gets booed.
They should not do that.
I think you're setting the fans up to boo him.
Also, didn't he already get a welcome back video
when he was with the Red Wings?
Yeah.
And then probably, oh.
They don't do it for him.
I guess if it's an exception because, oh, he's an all-time great,
we got to do it for him, I think that would probably be a mistake
because it'll be half a building of Leafs fans.
They're all going to cheer him.
And then the Sens fans are going to be like, we're not going to boo.
We're not going to cheer.
This is weird.
What an awkward moment that will be.
What a bizarre offseason to be a Sens fan.
Yeah.
There's a lot of emotion there, man.
You're captain and then this.
And you might be better for it.
But you do get Giroux back.
You do get Giroux back.
That's a big victory.
It lasted 12 hours.
Yeah.
And now there's this.
This is a weird one.
i'm not i'm not poking them i'm not poking them i'm not chirping them no that's that's odd i think
sens fans the reactions i'm seeing online instantly are saying the same they're like what really it's
not even about how good or bad of a job he did no it's just about toronto it's just odd you could
have gone anywhere yeah and i i think it you know okay let's say he leaves for pick a team out of a
hat the penguins i don't know you probably don't love it the leaves he could have gone anywhere
he could have gone to the half yeah but is the president or senior advisor to the general manager
assistant too is he matt sundin his swedish brother no like that's that's the whole thing
yeah i think that's the beginning of end of it matt sundin made a phone call to his buddy and
told him come over here well that's the toronto end of it yeah the i think leave fans will get
over the fact that it's daniel offenson pretty fast unless the power play sucks um this is a
sends thing well yeah and and then i wonder okay is it like uh is it like a leo carlson situation
i know i've got the leafs off in my back pocket let me have one more chat with steos before
you know like what's his contract up i don't know like but like do you because if it's if
his contract's not up then they have to offer him a definitive promotion to get out of his deal
that's the way those are structured and like what is what's the report is that he's joining the
leafs as in the coaching staff that is it steve we don't have more things for you
i want them july for hockey fans is all about yearning let me call john uh hey johnny johnny c
johnny chuh is what i call him johnny what's the closest wendy's yeah where's the closest
wendy's that's where he's hanging out through to the owner like i don't know what you threw
to gus fring he has he has been the the assistant the last three years in ottawa maybe he needed an
extension i don't know i don't know three years that's usually an assistant coach's contract right
hey man he could have gone anywhere that's crazy daniel alfredson is a leaf
wow okay all right now i don't know how i feel about that uh moving on from this one because
we don't have anything else uh more on the set oh actually no we do hang on the leafs just
announced something sorry go ahead john gruden marley's head coach yes daniel alfredson and
somebody named brad rinka will be joining the leafs uh staff uh announced just now uh lalonde
van ryan will not be returning oh wow i'm incredibly excited to add daniel john and
brad to our coaching staff head coach jim hiller daniel's experience leadership understanding of
the game speak for themselves john has established himself as one of the top coach in the ahl
uh prior they're just going through the career stuff what did gruden do um well gruden was the
head coach of the marlies yeah no i know that i'm just what i'm saying is what here's what the
thing it does not say exactly what roles they'll be playing but i would assume that alfred it does
it says daniel alfredson has been appointed associate coach yeah but that doesn't say
exactly what he's going to oversee is my point so yeah i mean like it doesn't still doesn't say
like what you're both right exactly do you do here um so that's interesting van ryan i mean
i mean their defense was freaking awful yesterday he was maybe more of a fit well he was definitely
more of a fit under berube he was one of the st louis guys that berube brought in savard was
another one um van ryan's not shocking i mean i guess lolan's not shocking either but i thought
he did a very good job his you know this is something we debated like his head coaching
resume is it's awful yeah his assistant coaching resume is pretty much exclusively good yeah his
his penalty kills wherever he's gone which is only Tampa and Toronto have been good even when
the Leafs were bad um so that's the one that worries me um Alfredson is obviously completely
fascinating Gruden that's a feel-good thing good for him and Warenka I'm not familiar Warenka joins
the Maple Leafs having most recently served as assistant coach for the University of Calgary
dino's men's hockey program wow 25 during his time he helped the dinos to a canada west men's
hockey championship in 2023 the dino he's also familiar with the dinos the founder co-founder
of true performance which specializes in sports performance data there we go was that not jim
hiller's thing too that is the chica connection there data oh interesting
hmm was true performance not a jim hiller thing too yes yes okay so they know each other from
there and they know shaiku from there okay okay it's hockey baby all right it's new guys but
they still operate the same way i know you so you're hired yeah well i guess okay just know
the right people i think they left out about uh him being a co-founder the other co-founder of
true performance is jim hiller that's yeah yeah yeah like yeah they should they could have said
that yeah yeah you're right they could have been clearer about that it notably left off because
they probably don't want that out there for some reason well it's not it is out there like that's
not a secret it's a googleable fact who founded true performance this guy and jim hiller and has
anybody asked if true former performance is any good do we know my guess is yes i sure hope it is
it better be it's the greatest now it's the greatest sats place ever so wouldn't true
performance have competed with chica's brand yeah maybe they were maybe they're all they all would
have run in the same circle maybe they tried to buy each other this is vince mcmahon buying wcw
but for nerds i think we're all connecting the dots here on these guys wow matz's alfredson
swedish connection yeah uh how do you say his name again the ranker alfredson warrenka warrenka
yeah there's the jim hiller data connection and the chica data connection with hillary and those
guys so yeah well jesse you're gonna get to all know all of them in person come training camp my
friend hopefully um uh gavin mckenna has chosen his number and his number is 92 sorry to everybody
that's 72 um uh but you know now he's 92 just like igor oshiganov and i think that that i also
know jeff o'neill but igor oshiganov is funnier i completely forgot that ever happened okay
ojigana for yeah no i knew i was a big o'neill fan i loved him no i was like oh he's the first
one to wear who the hell would have what oh igor ojigana that's right i totally forgot uh i like
the 92 thing um okay question i know that you you give the number to the to the veteran i get that
uh especially the guy that's won a couple cups and is going to go to the hall of fame
should brodsky have just been like ah who cares you're forgetting alex kneelander by the way oh
yeah alex neilander famously from the 25 season wore 92 for the leafs there you go i hope he got
a rolex i'll get them mixed up now yeah so when alex neilander if he gets called but he's still
in the system right yeah oh no ahl contract so but if they buy his contract to call him up he's
got to pick a new number if in theory if the leafs were to sign alex neilander to an nhl deal he
would have to pick a different number yes i think that's funny i think he should pick one of his
brothers old numbers 29 29 39 62 whatever man i think they're all available the neilander jerseys
come back yeah there you go you know you had a 29 now it works you're not even wrong did he have
one did they go w and a no i forget no i don't think they didn't okay good which i'm glad they
didn't i hate that stop doing that what's the hell is the number for exactly thank you jesse
why do we need the little thing next to your name i think it was also like alex let's be honest
we're not changing willie's we all we all know alex is gonna be two years or two years this is
alex is gonna be two weeks we're uh we're not changing willie's whole jersey for your two weeks
we had high hopes duties you should see the shit he pulls with the marley's like yeah you're like
oh man this guy should be in the nhl he's one of those guys that will trick you for his he's a
for a player yeah yeah i'd be comfortable with him playing games but not you're not you're hoping
he's not up in your lineup in the playoffs yeah right oh maybe he's like i don't know me and my
brother are both rich and let's play in the same city i think that's exactly what's going on i think
it's it's how do we turn this into a conversation about how it's a little silly all those people
who have the mckenna jerseys you gotta like get them unstitched and whatever no it sucks for them
no no you those are the hardcores who are difficult they are the fetters fetch cough
jersey people yes right they're the real ones yeah the guy who has the dave steckle jersey
yes in tampa hell yeah like why that's the scar that's i look at a leaf fan wearing a dave steckle
jersey at a road game in tampa the same way i look at a guy with cauliflower ears i'm like i
wouldn't fuck with him that guy knows what he's doing that guy knows what he's doing yeah the
proof is in the pudding don't fuck with him i saw on facebook marketplace there are some mckenna
jerseys 72 is already up for sale no oh what would you rather do replace the numbers or replace the
nameplate because you could just put borowski over it oh that is what's cheaper are you that's
where i would go i assume the nameplate because i would assume it's way easier yeah yeah so are you
trying to switch the numbers are you switching the nameplate you switch the nameplate and sell
it there you go and then you buy a mckenna one yeah you didn't buy a bobrovsky jersey you bought
a mckenna jersey but you messed up so you bought a bobrovsky replace the nameplate keep keep the
nameplate yeah i guess put it on the other one go to real sports and be like you're not gonna
believe this oh i'm sure they do believe yeah hey me again yeah a month ago yeah yeah you know
what we figured it out yeah i think the easier thing to do here than ripping off all of the
numbers is just replace the nameplate put borowski on it how many people do you think we're talking
about right now at least triple digits yeah yeah you think over a hundred definitely over a hundred
it's in the hundreds i would say yeah in ontario yeah because we were going to get a mckenna jersey
for my son and my wife's like should we just order it and i'm like no he doesn't have a number yet
no i'm the only one who matters okay so i'm thinking of me and actually i'm thinking of
my son so i'm selfless and amazing please hold me in high regard 92 90 i don't think he cares
like did he talk mckenna no did he talk about the significance of the number
no he did explain i forget the reasoning i could bring it up if you really want to know but
something about nine and two uh and that's why he did it sounds great but he also had other numbers
plus two is nine i forget why he explained it and yeah it's some weird reason hockey guy reason
sure yeah sure yeah whatever if that's the amount of points he gets next season i'll be happy
yeah uh now the other thing today uh rogers has officially as of this weekend uh taken over full
ownership of maple leaf sports and entertainment they are the sole owner look for them to combine
with the blue jays uh and create its own sort of entity because right now the blue jays are
associated with rogers uh rci so rogers communications incorporated um this would
be like moving change from one pocket to the other but i think the blue jays will
be fused with maple leaf sports and entertainment the question will become does keith pelly stay
and run Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment,
or does Mark Shapiro move in
and run Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment,
and the betting favorite is Mark Shapiro?
Which is weird,
because Shapiro did not win a championship.
Keith Pelley's got that big, fat Calder Cup ring.
So, don't let you laughing.
It's true.
Plus, I think an Argos victory under his stewardship.
Holy Moses.
I believe, right?
How is this even a conversation?
He was around for the Argos one.
um i don't know what shapiro's voice sounds like um i can't get keith pellies out of my head let's
go with shapiro but you're you're a lot better of a baseball fan than i am um who would we rather
in terms of running the business shapiro 100 they've done a fantastic job with everything
business-wise with the blue jays that rogers center upgrade that they've been making over
the last couple of years it's a destination to see around like major league baseball it feels
like a baseball park now it's incredible and the concourse like everything they did with it
like i love that place now and that's all shapiro and everything around the team too is is tenfold
where it was 10 years ago like they've only gone up with the blue jays in terms of everything off
the field so like if that's what we're ranking him on i think he's definitely at winning well
and there have been a lot of renovations to scotiabank arena but they've been mostly concourse
stuff not uh main bowl stuff so i wonder if shapiro is a guy that comes in and does the
suites and the suites need an upgrade it could kind of use it well like just the whole inner
working yeah what the jays have done is amazing that's fantastic yeah i think they're gonna have
to do the same here in toronto like with sorry toronto with the maple leafs and raptors i think
especially basketball uh such such a social game uh leafs it's just you know a lot of people in
suits that are tied a little too tight around their neck but the the basketball thing is like
those are young fans uh they're fun they're exciting if you're the average person you can
still afford a season ticket maybe not this year but you used to be able to you know can why can't
there be pavilions and and more bars and things like that that that people look forward to going
to like you know when you go to the blue jays right well it's just it's very social like there's
places for you to stand they elevated the dugout do you feel like you could shake the pitcher's
like they're they're ridiculously close to you i i hadn't been to a jay's game with the new
renovations until like a week ago you've been missing out i have been you mean the awesome
bullpen the yeah the bullpen i know some of the renovations were last year right yeah they did
over a couple off seasons yeah yeah it's but they're done now yes and it's brilliant yeah
absolutely brilliant i think it's a big part of the reason why people are kind of ignoring that
they suck what do you guys think this means for the spending part of it and rogers's dedication
to these teams well so correct me if i'm wrong but like because i don't know about this kind of
shit but if they merge the blue jays with mlse what's that going to do to stock price huge for
and it will eliminate there'll be a lot of crossover jobs that can be eliminated right
so there's i mean there's already i mean there's layoffs at rogers today yeah but that's different
rogers is is that maple leaf sports is a different corporation that the rogers that rogers owns but
no no yes steve trust me it's different it is nothing aren't they going to make it so that
they're not no they're not merging them i just said they're going to shoot them off because
here's what's going to happen there's going to be the fun business which is the sports business and
i believe sports net will also join that so they're going to pull the sports net brand much
like um neson has well i guess neson madison square sports has um where you just have this
you have the sports network associated uh with all the teams and they're you know they're all
together right and then you're going to have the that's the fun company now here's the company that
created the fun company and has all the has all the money and makes all the money off people which
as rogers communication does cable internet all that stuff they will be completely separate
because you can't um first off it allows ed to um aggressively manage maple leaf sports and
entertainment which is something he enjoys doing um he wants these teams to spend if you're worried
about spending on players don't like vladimir guerrero jr got a 500 million dollar contract
yeah don't worry about that if you're an employee um of any of these organizations well if you work
for maple leaf sports and entertainment steve you and i have um you're already making 30 less
than market value you go to maple leaf sports and entertainment not to make money you go to you go
there to go i worked here got great experience and now i'm gonna go make my money at another
corporation because they know they can gear you right um they're gonna grind your price down
because it's a cool place to work right and then so that's that's what's gonna happen that's that's
the rumor anyway that's been true for at least 15 years yeah maple leaf sports has never like
you know even when the pension plan opened they they do not pay people well yeah i had like a
fixed salary when i uh wasn't an intern there when i got my first full year working and one day i was
like i wonder how much money i make per hour based on the hours that i put in and the salary that i
made it was like five bucks an hour yeah exactly and the other thing you have to remember too is
that you know with the cable business going up and down because you know there is still a cable
business to be had but you know with people moving more and more digital you don't want
the you don't want the sports teams share prices to be affected by what's happening in your cable
business and vice versa what if there's a covid that could imagine imagine during covid where
everybody including maple leaf sports i'm told had to put money into the business again because
there was no money in the business right so all the owners collectively had to put tens of millions
in the business to keep it going during covid must have hated that must have hated it right
they're not used to that this is my atm imagine that is attached to a communications company
that will drag your stock price down so you want to keep them they're owned by the same guy but
you want to keep them separate because they're two different businesses and you don't want one
affected by the other two two sides of the same pant essentially i hate how accurate south park
is about this country it is it's crazy i hate it it's over it's run by 19 corporations this
country country maybe nine double digits well because there's like three in every sector
uh anyway um sdpn is not one of them so that i think that's it for today's show
what number has been most worn in leaf's history i say number seven 11 19 players of one number
worn number seven 34 players have won number 11 wow number 11 but 50 players have worn number 25
and none of them really 25 50 guys look at that who's the last guy who's the last guy uh most
recent brandon carlo oh oh you know that guy brandon carlo that guy yeah not a lot of years
in Leafs history where somebody
wasn't wearing 25.
Just looking at this list,
at this list, stop wearing it.
