Starting point is 00:00:00 This is Steve Dangle Podcast, powered by Sports Interaction. Want to bet? Spank Andy. Woo! S-D-P-P. The Steve Dangle Podcast, with your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wilde, and Jesse Blake. Let's go! So, I wanted to, first off, shout out that if you want to download the Sports Interaction
Starting point is 00:00:28 app which is brand new you can on the qr code on this video so if you're watching on video you the qr code bottom right hand corner you should be able to do it just click it with your phone so it'd be over there yeah yeah in my imagination it's over there and i want to shout out a couple of people first off um audie james who took the pinata pick yesterday a five thousand to one bet so he put two bucks down because he's tuning steven it yeah and audie does our game over calgary feed and he's amazing and uh if the flames had scored in the first minute he would have won 100 bucks wow pretty cool uh and then uh another no they didn't and then uh rick rick calder who's another listener of this show said i uh when i did the pinata pick i got 27 minutes in as a goal
Starting point is 00:01:14 for the winnipeg game he's like not a great spot but i toonie tuesday's it and uh it's because tooney steve you know it's fun i did a basketball one it was uh donovan mitchell to score 37 oh yeah and again it's really low odds not a bad guy though for to try no not at all i was like 37 that's about right i could have got like i don't know 14 that's cool or something like yeah whatever well okay so jesse speaking of basketball i wanted to show you guys this before we get started and if you're ever wondering what it's like to be a canadian watching and consuming american content i want you to have a look at this uh is it up on screen okay so this is um this is geography in canada according to americans and at first off i love the the uh the catchphrase at the top
Starting point is 00:01:57 because it was we the north but they have it as we are the north from nba on tnt and then it look at where they say kitchener toronto and montreal are on the map if you look that is hudson's bay and they have toronto up near where thunder bay is and kitchener too montreal is somewhere in i don't even know where that would be in northern quebec none of the places they're talking about are featured in this photo exactly montreal toronto and kitchener none of them are featured in this photo and they're of course talking about the you know the growth of basketball in in um in canada but it's it's uh it's that it's the part of northern quebec and the part of northern ontario that uh not a lot of people go to newfoundland and labrador is in this photo
Starting point is 00:02:43 what the hell is this all they had to do all they had to do was google it that's all they had to do that's yeah i what what on earth sort of reminds me of when the jays were back in the playoffs for the first time in like 25 years back in like 2015 and you know we were used to our own broadcast team calling the game oh and the mlb is like nope our guys and that's what they do for every playoffs did we get stuck up about that and uh one of the guys called the um one of the guys called lake ontario the ocean that was on i forget what it was that he's a former player i forget his name i forget it was very funny he mentioned turf every five seconds that's right could not stop talking about the quote-unquote astro turf which isn't even the name of the
Starting point is 00:03:29 brand anymore because canada as you all know does not have grass um yeah exactly cold it's too damn cold anyway cold for grass i just thought you'd you know i just thought you'd find that funny you know because it's kind of this happened uh with rachel nichols and uh myself when i was running the tim and sid account oh yeah i want to see if i can pull up the tweet that you get the geography She was doing a broadcast and they brought up a graphic with Canada on it. And they had like, Canada was in, Toronto was in like Vancouver or something. And then I screen grabbed it. I tweeted at her from the Tim and Sid account.
Starting point is 00:04:09 And I was like, somebody teach them about geography or something. Then she replied and she was like, oh, I got friends up there. I'm so sorry. It's not like there's a lot to learn, right? Like we have a pretty sparsely populated country. So, like, if you want at least, at very least, you know, I would expect you to know some major cities. Like, you know, we all know some of the major cities in the United States, right? Like, the ones where there's hockey teams.
Starting point is 00:04:34 The ones where there's basketball teams. Yeah. If you pay any attention to sports, you should be able to name at least 25 American cities. For sure. And if you can name five Canadian cities, I'm good with that. No, you should be able to name seven. Well, if you're like... We have seven hockey teams.
Starting point is 00:04:48 If you're an NBA person, you may not be because you're like, why would you, like, you know, if that's all you do you just live and breathe nba then maybe you don't but i would expect like you should know toronto montreal you should know calgary edmonton you should know vancouver you should know winnipeg and you for sure should know ottawa and like regina because regina it's the city that rhymes with fun yeah oh you should know that you should know that if you were ever an elementary school student absolutely not because they taught it but because the students taught what do you have that up so this was november 5th 2018 rachel nichols was talking about uh toronto i guess and and just the how the gta works and they showed a picture of the great
Starting point is 00:05:31 lakes area please put that on the screen it is on the screen right now and they have oshawa up by like that's probably ottawa all right no that's uh yeah and yeah it actually looks like brockville like like even further than that yeah it's probably even past auto niagara falls yeah so so i tweeted at rachel nichols and esp and i was like someone needs to explain what's going on here i put a little arrow to the map that was on the side of her while she's doing the graphic and then she tweeted back at us and she's like oh man serves me right i mentioned both places because i've spent time in both as a former hockey beat writer i like to reminisce but then didn't check the graphic as it was going by on the show please accept my humble
Starting point is 00:06:14 apology and crude make good attempt so she so you know the thing is rachel's not see how they tried but what's hilarious is rachel's not in the graphics department like the way it works on a tv show especially on like espn is they have graphics people yeah and producers who their job is to go okay what's the map all right and then they have a producer who looks over the person that makes the map it goes let me double check that there's yeah there has to be someone in the process it's like hey is this right yeah yeah like like okay so for our show our phone our show's a little like um you know not a little like it it's it's not anything really like it's exactly like you know pti where they it's like they do three minutes on each topic and then they
Starting point is 00:06:55 or a minute on each topic and they move on and then it's like at the end of the show here's what we got wrong right which i like you know because they're just they're just flaming hot takes and then it's like hey you're wrong here here here here here and you kind of humbly accept your your your madness it's pressure with our show we get things wrong because it's like we don't know where the topics are always going and then you're trying to think of things off the top of your head or whatever but a show like that would be super prepared yeah and the nba on tnt super prepared we know where we're going it's not 90 minutes long it's a five minute segment yeah you screw up under pressure it's hilarious it's just people not doing the due diligence yes and i don't get
Starting point is 00:07:31 if you're making a map graphic check that you got it right no or no or don't i got a or don't or don't i got a tattoo yesterday and i was trying to tell a story and uh several times during it i forgot completely what i was talking about i crumbled under the pressure the pressure of the pain did you uh seven minutes are you something that can handle silence seven minutes seven minutes that's oh my god you mentioned the tattoo do you want to see it it's really badass Hey Steve got a tattoo guys That's why he's wearing this cool Root sweater that he's going to take off
Starting point is 00:08:04 Eventually are you putting it on Are you showing it off do you want me to show You got an STPN shirt on under it of course you're going to You also brought it up so you clearly want to show By the way the reason We weren't talking anything So listen I don't know how you
Starting point is 00:08:20 Show off the tattoo Or it's like yeah yeah yeah that's cool It's cool that's great about your kid anyway my Ferrari Is this is okay what do we got so the reason is not so that i could unzip it and show it on the show the reason i wore this is so i didn't have to put a sweater over my head oh okay because it really really hurts no that basketball conversation definitely had a lot to do with these it was done so steve had a lion put on the inside and now you've got a loon a loon oh your camera's off i guess and i
Starting point is 00:08:48 will turn it on i can't you suck why do you want me to turn it around the battery surrounded it With leaves and stuff, and I got a sneaky owl thistle under there. Nice. Yeah, I think it looks really cool. That's very nice. When you're getting tattooed. You're going with Adam's teeth. Yeah, come over.
Starting point is 00:09:05 Yeah. Over there. Get in there. Close up. Let me see it. Let me show it. Yeah, it's right there. Yeah, sex.
Starting point is 00:09:12 It's covered in tape. Well, hold on. But show the new one. Has everybody seen the line? Yeah. Yeah, there you go. Okay. Hold on.
Starting point is 00:09:18 There you go. This is great radio. Oh, yeah. We're up. Listen, all you need to know is that it looks like a loon, but a very, very nice one. Can we shout out the artist again? Because they're amazing. Livia Zhang.
Starting point is 00:09:30 Drop your arm a little low. Livia. There you go. Drop it low. Too low. Don't drop it that high. There you go. Livia has done tattoos for lots of people.
Starting point is 00:09:44 And Livia does amazing work. And you know who commented on she posted this tattoo yesterday? Akima Liu. What? And I was like, does Livia know Akeem Alou? Like, I didn't know. Livia did a tattoo for Shawn Mendes, famously. I mean, that's the crown jewel.
Starting point is 00:10:03 But her cousin thinks it's really cool that Livia tattooed Steve Nairn. Right. But not Shawn Mendes. No. Let me ask you this. What do you like to tattoo? What do I like to tattoo? No, what are you like to tattoo?
Starting point is 00:10:17 Meaning, like, are you, because there's certain people that cannot stand silence. and i always wonder as a tattoo artist like you're trying to do your art and then there's probably a lot of people that are super awkward and they're like i can't i can't stand silence so i'm gonna talk to you throughout um i'm mostly chatty because livia is mostly chat oh so livia chats okay yeah but no one else does it's funny like we're the conversation for the entire room oh um uh but when she oh man like the the back of the arm and like here right now at home pinch the outside of your arm like the and oh that's that's fine all i feel these great uh tries my tries but then pinch your inner bicep and oh yeah that hurt now pinch pinch like the back of your arm the back
Starting point is 00:11:06 of your chest oh yeah now pinch it right by your armpit and now pinch it by the bicep part of the there were times and this is why i brought it up like there were times where i just couldn't utter words i just had to go to you just a dumb place where i didn't have to say anything because i couldn't think of anything i think pain that's the worst place to get hit with a paintball too right up in here oh my god hurts like hell i can't even imagine that jesse what are you going to say why why because you look like you yeah you got something funny it's a nice tattoo i like the part where steve's like that's what i that's why i brought it up but we're like what i wanted to talk about my fucking tattoo i'm not ashamed i'm not ashamed i wanted
Starting point is 00:11:55 just tell us you want to leave the show with it next time all right no no i'm not so egotistical that i would be like adam i know what your plans are but let me lead with the tattoo let me just shoehorn it in there let me just get this done didn't work sometimes you gotta try stuff yeah i i want to ask you something like a map of oshawa i want to ask you something i want to ask what's going on with the calgary flames what's going on they lost in overtime last night to the st louis blues how dare they who are not great and you know who elliot friedman has been speculating that uh the blues are are gonna fire several people out the door um like they're they may be the the big team to trade with and this
Starting point is 00:12:42 might be a good root retool year for them wild card battle in both conferences is fascinating sure is so i want to stay in the west for now but i definitely want to talk about the east i'm trying to figure out why the flames who were so good last year i know that gadreau and kachuk are are gone and i know they're both having bad they're having good years on bad teams but you've got really good replacements you've got arguably you should be a little bit better cadre huberto and weaker yeah yeah what is happening here it seems like it's not the talent it cannot be the talent the talent is there what happened what's going on well you know how they say the best kind of trade is one where both teams get better right like there's
Starting point is 00:13:30 the most notable ones are winners and losers but when both teams get better that's how you know it's a good trade both teams got worse florida won the president's trophy last year right they're not as good they're potentially giving up the first overall pick they're they're not better uh calgary is in the same boat uh but calgary has a far more realistic chance of making the playoffs which is wild because again considering can't emphasize this enough florida won the president's trophy last year right so what's going on with calgary well daryl sutter is losing the room at
Starting point is 00:14:10 a breakneck pace um as audie uh pointed out um talking about the flames lack of what was it a lack of elite talent uh or lack of dominant talent um you just signed jonathan huberto to 10 million dollars so i think the guy who set the record for most points in a season by a left winger might be elite um he might not be elite for you or the system you want to play oh assist sorry yeah you know for the system he wants to play yeah yeah and might i suggest that if you get a guy like that and he's not working out for you It might be a little your fault
Starting point is 00:14:54 Might have Something to do with it I think he was coming back from an injury Like Do you have Daryl Sutter's quote Jesse Because what I'm going to say next Has everything to do with it
Starting point is 00:15:08 The lack of preparation one Read it Maybe that's it I don't think it is He didn't have a good press conference the other day Or it might have been last night Yeah Well, Jonathan scored right away, so I made it 3-2, but, you know, you're still, it's hard to score four goals and win hockey games.
Starting point is 00:15:33 As the skate goes along, I mean, are you happy with the way the third period goes? I mean, I'm fine with that. Yeah, you know what, we got to take the point, right? We didn't skate yesterday because the Harlem Globetrotters were playing in our building. we had to travel and we couldn't skate this morning because six o'clock game we better be thankful that we we got a point considering that a lot of our young players didn't show up lack of preparation got taken by the hand some of these guys is that just a learning curve i've been in the league for one to six years some of them so is that just a lack of preparation any change made to start the team or was it no no you never hear that a goaltender being called out directly by the coach you rarely sometimes i think
Starting point is 00:16:20 the goaltender is the player most likely to be can i just make a blanket declaration about daryl sutter in the category of play time to move on you this guy was in jack did i not say that jack adams contention last year right that's such a it's not last year anymore and there's a thing in the nhl where you fire head coach and all of a sudden the player is a little happier it seems like you have more attentive you have a great collection of talent nobody is denying that the roster is a talented roster of hockey players and the coach isn't getting what he needs out of them it's probably time to get somebody new in that locker room and like there's a lot of reading between the lines with daryl sutter i don't want to extrapolate to the point of accusation but he's
Starting point is 00:17:01 talking about the young players and a lack of preparation and we didn't skate yesterday And they can't get prepared What are you really saying Daryl Where'd they go Was there a dinner Was there an after dinner Is that what you're suggesting Daryl That's what I got the impression of
Starting point is 00:17:19 I don't know I have a hard time believing that a bunch of guys In their early 20s missing one 60 minute skate Makes a difference The Harlem Globetrotters were in the building You couldn't skate You can't find any rink in Calgary There's no ice in Calgary
Starting point is 00:17:33 In January there's no ice You guys can't find a rink If it's that big of a deal Daryl Book another sheet He's upset by There's a We really do have to find that quote I'll try to find it
Starting point is 00:17:46 He's obviously upset to an extent With the roster construction He's upset to an extent With the commitment to hockey From the players on his hockey team And the thing I do You know
Starting point is 00:18:03 gotta give them their goaltender outplayed our goaltender. You've been able to say that most nights. Yeah. With the Calgary Flames, which by dollars and cents, you shouldn't ever be saying. Markstrom is having a Bobrovsky streak where it's like bad season, good season, bad season.
Starting point is 00:18:19 Whoa, I didn't know he was this bad. You want your dominant players quote? Yes, this is a big one. Steve requested this, just like he requested to talk about his tattoo. Yeah. here fast forward to the part where garyl sutter talks about my tattoo 30 shots and then a lack of success when you're over 40 shots what does that mean well it means
Starting point is 00:18:41 shooting percentages you know what you gotta get if you just do it you there's always guys that have high shooting percentages and they have big years then the next year goes back to normal where it's in that 12 to end of there right so when you see guys that have a what do you say a career year and then they go break back down well you look at their shooting percentages so you really missed his calling as a funeral director volume of shots is really important you don't have you know it's just disabled you can use all that from a team standpoint and an individual standpoint all you want when you don't have dominant players then you have to take lots of shots you want to just do it if you take just any history in it and i've been through it
Starting point is 00:19:23 lots where you you say well you're a shot volume team we shot volume team if you don't have a lot of star goal scoring players right so if you take for example the calgary flames last year that two players that were three players led the team scoring you look at their volume of shots and their quality of shots right he scored 40 goals so there's players that scored 30 or 35 whatever it was well they had a high shooting percentage that's why they scored 35 doesn't matter how many shots they took most of your high quality shots come from me to the light right there. It's either on a breakaway or an odd man rush or a rebound. So if that player
Starting point is 00:20:00 is getting that shot, it doesn't matter how many you got. You can score three on 20 if one was a breakaway and one was an odd man rush and one was just a manly goalie. Really when they call high danger shots, that's just what a high danger shot is. Basically it's the player
Starting point is 00:20:16 and the goalie. When you look at it it's not through a team. Okay, so he's not saying that they don't have the talent for that. No, he directly did. That's very much what he said. I think he said that when you don't have dominant players, and what I mean by that is what I think probably what he meant,
Starting point is 00:20:33 and it didn't come across that way, is we don't have players playing like the dominant players that they could be. That we had last year. Out of the three guys he mentioned last year, two of them aren't on the team anymore. He mentioned the 40 goal scores. He literally calls out management there, I think, in a subtle way, in a backhanded way, and says,
Starting point is 00:20:50 we don't have the talent that we had last year because you got rid of the guys and you couldn't resign them and you brought in these new guys that i don't like who don't have the high shooting percentage you can't put up the 40 goals what the fuck is going on management yeah that's daryl sutter's way of saying that in not so many words if i'm brad that's what i thought if brad tree living was an emotional guy yeah no you're fired you're fired oh yeah you're fired today you know what to be honest with you though from what i've heard um from what i've heard from several people um the the the situation in calgary as far as management goes is a little bit messed up because true living was on his last bullet after bill
Starting point is 00:21:29 or sorry his last lifeline after uh bill peters oh we were talking about him like he was totally out the door and and the one thing that sort of saved him is that sutter came in at the end of that one year and the team looked a little better and then they looked great and and obviously now they stink and i well and they don't i mean they're still they're still in the wild card but they just let the st louis blues who are two points out of the wild card or who were four points out last night move within two points of them in edmonton same amount of games played and apparently the owner is the big sutter fan if true living and had his choice sutter would not have it it's murray edwards and and so so this is that's the the rumor is that murray edwards is the sutter guy
Starting point is 00:22:12 true living is not and it's a question of which one of them survives this is it true living or sutter that survives this because at the end of the season if you know if they're a wild card team they could potentially both survive it but i could see a situation where if the flames don't make it somebody's going the nhl is full of billionaire owners who i can't understand how they ever got successful i think i i can i can understand because imagine this okay imagine you're a control freak billionaire you don't get to be a billionaire in most cases like if you didn't come from old money like if you didn't have it passed down to you you make all this money in business because you were super successful at something and you were probably super lucky and then it's
Starting point is 00:22:57 like okay well i'm going to spend a billion dollars on an nhl franchise and not manage it i'm just gonna give it over to this guy you're telling me i spent two billion dollars on this fun little toy and i don't get any say i'm not gonna even i'm gonna i'm gonna hire people for sure but listen murray edwards i know you're cheap uh fire brad for living and you do it i mean you do it no like listen there's your guy fire brad for living and you do it play first lives that are too yeah okay whatever money you're paying your general manager if you're making decisions for that general manager all the money that you're paying that general manager is just lit on fire it's just it's a donation to the trail living family they really need it like what are
Starting point is 00:23:46 you doing what are you doing you pay a guy or you you pay a guy to do a job or you don't yeah no steve your point is right in that the best uh owners and pro sports are the ones who hire the smart people to do the jobs for them and they just back them with the money you know but you don't understand to the owners they're the smart people right you know how much money the Aquilines are just lighting on fire at any
Starting point is 00:24:09 given moment oh yeah no we need to bring in Rutherford and Patrick Alvin and the Sedins and I still make all the fucking decisions arson money arson yeah I think you are the Joker that's a t-shirt
Starting point is 00:24:25 stop it they say they they you know when you put it in terms like that what you should be doing as a billionaire is trying to find the best manager for your team and then letting them do their job yeah and i wake up every morning and i see the best manager for my team in the mirror i'm a billionaire you best bet your ass i know what i'm doing daryl sutter's my guy i think i think you know when you put it in terms like okay well you think about what what's the revenue for a home game it's probably a million dollars for a home game in the playoffs between ticket sales and concessions and all that's probably about a million a million a million bucks in numbers it could even be more
Starting point is 00:25:04 that might be conservative um well the 50 50 in calgary always gets up to like half a million dollars it's it's crazy yeah but that's you gotta give western canada anything east of ontario they love the 50 50 50 50 oh man here it is a typical home game makes 1.3 million dollars in ticket revenue just ticket revenue per regular season game yeah and you know if you buy some jerseys and you throw some concessions on that maybe it's a couple hundred grand more yeah so it's about 1.6 in revenue i think total so if you play let's say you do a leafs yeah you're a seven and out team like the leafs have been okay for you so you let's say you have home ice advantage like they did last year well that's one and a half times four that's uh alex kerfoot and peering well paid for in in a
Starting point is 00:25:52 week done done uh the leafs would be up near the three million dollar range to be fair because they charge a little bit more so maybe they get a little bit more concessions they own the bill that's matthew's contract wrapped up in a week yeah yeah the leaf it's stupid money like that's crazy money tell me the players don't deserve more no they don't because small market billionaires need to survive jesse anyway we're getting off topic jesse can you click on the flame schedule one more time and just just to have that on the screen so start the month with a game uh in winnipeg then in calgary and then it's one two three four five games on the road and they lost Both of the first two, one to Chicago in overtime,
Starting point is 00:26:46 which is inexcusable because it's Chicago. It's a disaster for both teams. Max Domi, unbelievable OT goal. He's getting traded. Well, or he might stay. And then St. Louis, like you need to win both those games. One, because Chicago is a must-win game. Two, because, I mean, you have a home-and-home with St. Louis.
Starting point is 00:27:05 The one in St. Louis tomorrow should be a bloodbath. um if at the end of this five game road trip the flames have a losing record like if they drop four of five or five of five potentially uh Sutter's gone well I but is he though because if the like you you're you're pretending like the general manager has a say here yeah and I'm harboring under the illusion I like if listen uh change is quick though I don't know that many games in a row i don't know in the season i don't know i quick adam i know you don't have a show called the adam mild sports report but i trust your reporting on this issue and that i i don't think the gm is making all the calls here and if it was any rational general manager i think you're
Starting point is 00:27:50 looking at very in the next very near future moving on from the head coach but if he's not making those decisions that decision is not being made anytime soon true love it like we all fond over the offseason he had. The two best offseasons this year have been, is relative to what the expectations were, have been close to disaster so far. The two teams
Starting point is 00:28:13 we fond over the most. In Ottawa. Ottawa and Calgary. And it's not like Calgary's bad. They're still, like, many teams would kill for that. They might make the playoffs. They might win a round. They will likely make the playoffs. But it's sort of, at this point, you would expect Calgary to be in the hunt for the President's Trophy. That's what the
Starting point is 00:28:29 expectation was. This should be a contender. for sure top five top six team they should be a contender you got one of the most important pieces of the stanley cup champion you've got one of the best defenses in the league and you had that anyway and then you got mackenzie wieger yes like it got better huberto should replace a guy like johnny gaudreau uh you know of those 40 goal guys you still have elias lindholm they are in a playoff spot i know i know like all everything we're saying they are in the first wild card spot they got 47 points uh edmonton's in the second wild card spot with 45 st louis ties with edmonton just outside of the playoffs with 45 as well but look at nashville
Starting point is 00:29:15 and colorado look how close they are and look how many games they've played nobody thinks colorado is going to miss the playoffs that's a playoff team so one of these spots is going to be bumped out not only is colorado not in a playoff spot but there are two non-playoff teams ahead of them right now that is a dog fight down there edmonton's on playoff spot too which is wild considering everyone taking a shit on them but again st louis and nashville and colorado have all played fewer games and are all right there it's funny because edmonton and calgary kind of got similar situations with a lot of talent and effort but his is not a free agent goalie they gave a lot of money not being had in either city yeah edmonton though um i mean like i give edmonton a little
Starting point is 00:30:06 bit more leeway because they have bad defense and they've always had bad defense but now it looks like it's a lot of bad defense from the forwards like there's a couple plays where teams are just dancing through the forward group and it's not pretty and that oh my gosh the fucking power play last night versus the kings it was four the kings went four for six edmonton went oh for six oh i believe is is the number but that's the problem right if edmonton doesn't go four for six they don't have a shot yeah if right not good see i give edmonton a little bit more leeway because balance wise calgary's the more balanced team edmonton has goofy offense questionable defense and if stewart skinner is not a net you won't win i see a more yeah i see
Starting point is 00:30:47 a more easily definable roster construction problem with Edmonton and with Calgary. Yeah, like, Stunner should look three hours up the road for roster construction issues.
Starting point is 00:30:57 Well, and with Calgary, I see, I don't see the same problem on paper, but look at them. They're at almost the exact same spot in the standing,
Starting point is 00:31:05 so it might be time for a different mindset. Time for a different billionaire. Different or that. I mean, listen, we're giving them shit and Colorado is not even in a playoff spot right now,
Starting point is 00:31:16 but at least that's understandable. Yeah. Well, they didn't have anyone for like a month. Right. If you want some entertainment, by the way, Nathan McKinnon's highlight reel goal against Edmonton the other day, go and watch it. It is a highlight reel goal. The vast majority of it being a highlight reel goal has to do with Nathan McKinnon being an elite talent. But watch it to watch Darnell Nurse and Cody Cece's feet glitch at the same time.
Starting point is 00:31:43 They don't move. they don't move because they both just go fuck in those situations is it a hat pick or a dang it yes well done it's both I am me and producer
Starting point is 00:31:59 Nick decide and we are not above putting one in both and in the Tuesday hat picks video I go look at how amazing this is isn't this amazing and then on Thursday I go now focus on a different part of this clip what a couple goofs it's funny hey let's bring dave on you can bet that with david bastel brought to you by sports
Starting point is 00:32:23 interaction get in the action and make a play 19 plus please play responsibly all right dave welcome back it's the new year hey guys listen happy new year i know you got some these okay so the the prop bets on sports interaction on their brand new app are going to be the best when it comes to hockey. That's the goal. It's the best hockey bet you can find. But Steve, you've got some bragging to do. You had a good winter break, my friend.
Starting point is 00:32:48 I'm not... Now I'm not so sure. Why not? Because I told you guys... Tell me more. I told you guys that my record is unreal, and I checked, and it's just sort of normal.
Starting point is 00:32:58 Yeah, it's like any kind of decent better, you're at probably like 55%, you know? You know what it actually is? It's like I've won my last two. There you go. So I... that's pretty good i i do two things that's pretty good i i i'm a dirty coward and i take the favorite okay like the heavy favorite and i will also um if a team my underdog bet is if a team is losing
Starting point is 00:33:25 like two or three nothing i just go ah and i'll throw two bucks on them uh because it's 2023 in the nhl and sometimes they blow it the big screw up for me is the first time i tried that it worked Oh, yeah. And now I'm like, well, it's going to work every time. And I think it's worked once. Now, the first one we got to get to is obviously the Leafs and Preds tonight. William Nylander to get a hat trick. Dave, what are the odds on this?
Starting point is 00:33:52 Oh, wow. Yeah, you know what? I threw this one on specifically for Jess, because I know we were talking about, you know, the 50-goal club with Nylander and more than Matthews. And I'm like, you know what? Hey, let's see how many goals he can score against the Preds. You get it at 51 to 1.
Starting point is 00:34:07 What? That's pretty good cash. even a steep toony bet on that a hundred bucks right there boom toony bet on elander hatrick tonight against the press i'm doing a toony bet on that and i'm trying to find it right now i'm fairly certain willie has scored a hat trick against the preds before there it is dangles doodle uh doozies it has its own section dangles doodles way to do it different um yeah that's a different one uh ontario born player coming back to play against the least will he score a goal what are the odds here, Dave? Yeah, 270
Starting point is 00:34:36 for Duchesne to score. He's been pretty good for the Preds in the last couple of years after having a little bit of a hiccup year here and there. You know, there's no former friends on this roster, which is kind of crazy because usually there's, oh, there's some sort of Leaf connection, but of course there's
Starting point is 00:34:52 always going to be an Ontario-born player. But yeah, that's weird. I like that. Pride of Halliburton. Have you ever been to Halliburton, Ontario? I have not. I have not. So you don't know the the euphoria of having breakfast at cozy corner what is cozy corner cozy starting to tempt me you don't know about cozy corner no so i learned about cozy corner with this i learned
Starting point is 00:35:19 about cozy corner because mike myers once like mike myers the actor not the murderer from horror film right yeah yeah friday the 13th yeah he was in halliburton i can't remember why and he went to cozy corner and the staff were like oh my goodness it's mike myers and he said oh just make sure it doesn't end up in the paper and then it did and so what he did was he brought the paper uh and showed it to conan o'brien uh years and years ago do you remember when conan o'brien recorded in toronto for like a week yes yes i do so they talked about the cozy corner and then we We went to Halliburton with my parents, and I'm like, well, we've got to go to Cozy Corner.
Starting point is 00:36:01 Amazing female bacon. What is happening? I'm so glad that we had that conversation. Now we know. That's where Matt Duchesne's from. He's from Halliburton. The Matt Duchesne odds are really good. That's all I know.
Starting point is 00:36:14 Yeah, those are good odds. What are the odds? I will go to Cozy Corner. Also, a couple bets here that you can take. If you believe Matt Murray's got it back online, like really online, uh matt murray shoot out sorry excuse me shut out versus the predators what do we got on the odds there dave yeah eight to one there i also threw on the uc sorrows just in case you were
Starting point is 00:36:38 going opposite and say hey you know maybe the pred show at the leafs i don't see that happening i'm cheering heavy for the leafs tonight just because the preds are part of that central division i want nobody winning in the central division outside of the jets so uh big uh big belief in the Maple Leafs tonight. Yeah, Matt Murray, 8-1. You know, TooneyBad gets you $16, Steve. See, why are you catering this to me?
Starting point is 00:37:03 What is... You know what, man? UC Soros was 64 saves the other day. That guy's bananas. Oh, yeah. I'm going to bet on that not happening again. So he's ran out of saves is what you're trying to tell us. That's right. He's all done. Dave, thanks so much as always.
Starting point is 00:37:18 And we're looking forward to having you back on Monday. And it's good to... Brand new year, my friend happy new year fellas thank you so it's officially concerned confirmed and you should be concerned uh no you shouldn't uh austin matthews is on a rest day today will not play tonight uh what um it looks like um who's the guy they brought up mcmahon bobby mcmahon bobby mcmahon not vince mcmahon which we can talk about later actually i'd like to discuss that um uh bobby mcmahon will make his debut and it's funny we will yeah oh i hadn't seen that Good for him
Starting point is 00:37:51 First line setter What do we need to know about the Bobster Oh my god What we need to know about Bobby McMahon Is when I saw the Leafs called him up I was like oh he's on NHL contract I forgot I honestly forgot they ever signed him
Starting point is 00:38:06 He's 26 years old He's a winger I mean I assume Do they have the line rushes He's going to be on the fourth line Please tell me the line I'm going to have a look and see if I can find it Mark Masters usually has
Starting point is 00:38:21 But Without Matthews I hazard a guess If it's only one game they might have Willie up the middle What do we got Jesse from Dave Alter I don't have it there That's not today Never mind I was about to pay you a compliment David
Starting point is 00:38:36 You suck What about Mike Stevens Doesn't look like anybody's tweeted The lines yet Looks like Jarnkrog, Tavares, Marner Bunting, Nylander, Engvall Kerfoot, Kempf, McMahon Aston Rees, Holmberg, Dryden Hunt
Starting point is 00:38:53 Wow You know it's interesting the last show we gave you a lot of shit About the Joseph Wohl He should come up and get a tryout thing And you know it looks like that's what they're doing Also Matthew's getting a break is probably a good thing It was funny Cam Chiron tweeted he's like
Starting point is 00:39:09 The Leafs are already giving rest days to their stars Because they already know who they're going to play in the playoffs and he's like great great playoff format guys it's true it's sort of like we shouldn't know in january who the leaps are going to play that's frustrating uh but we know um i uh you know what it's their number one center out for what sounds like one game i'm not going to get too worked up about the roster construction and also with sheldon keith you don't get too worked up about the the roster that he starts the game with because it's not what he's going to end with oh yeah blender for sure to me the bigger issue is uh tj brody's on injured reserve so we
Starting point is 00:39:48 don't know how long he's going to be out i thought it was very interesting that now he's out with a rib injury and the one before was an oblique and then they said keith said that neither of them are related it's an it's an it's a rib injury that he's been playing through the whole time and like he got an oblique injury that kept him out and that had nothing to do with the rib injury but they're so close i'm sure it's a little related uh everything i mean everything screws up everything yeah right like oh his back injury and a shoulder injury are unrelated well no yeah they are right a little bit i'm no doctor but like they're pretty close doctor yeah i they they need tj brody hopefully he'll be okay riley hall has been garbage every time i've seen it
Starting point is 00:40:35 except for last game. So hopefully that trend. Yeah, they were good. That was good. Hopefully that trend. All three pairings were good. Sandin, Lilligran, Giordano can't play bad with anyone. So let's have him not play bad with Connor Timmons,
Starting point is 00:40:49 who might get three points a night and be a pointy game player. And Riley Hall. I'm just, they're so high up in the standings and they've played so well, so consistently. i can't get worked up about one rest day for a player who i is very realistically believably probably banged up yeah and i and and still on pace for about 40 goals he's fine he already yeah he's good a-okay i'm not worried about it yeah i mean i've been a little scared i'm spooked of nashville because they're very they're playing really well right lately and uc stars can just
Starting point is 00:41:29 stand on his head and they can get a couple goals and they can win tonight and like I'm not going to be concerned if the Leafs drop this game I want to see what they're
Starting point is 00:41:36 made of it's depending on the effort obviously given how the last forever playoffs have gone I don't actually mind these let's see what they're made of games and I like how
Starting point is 00:41:49 many let's do an over under on how many face-offs will he's going to take tonight mine's three I Sheldon doesn't like him there I don't think he's going to play there
Starting point is 00:41:57 very much tonight I We'll see. It's probably one of those where Kyle called down and said, let's just give him a rest day and let Willie play some center, and you may have to do this from time to time in the playoffs. I hate Willie at center. He's a great winger. I thought you were a supporter of Willie at all times, Jesse.
Starting point is 00:42:12 I do, and that is why I want him in the best position to succeed at all times. Because Jesse also put, how much did you put down on Willie scoring 40 goals this year? Or 50? Everything I could. Yeah, that's a sports interaction, and I'm wondering how he's feeling about that. Now I figured out why he's upset about it. I want him to succeed definitely for him. William Nylander, we've tried this so many damn times.
Starting point is 00:42:35 Engvall, I mean, Engvall should probably be playing up the middle. I wonder if it's on their strong side. Engvall takes one and then really takes the other. That's 100% what they're going to do. No, Steve's very right in his assessment that we start the game with this. Keith just mixes it up as we go along. Yeah, Kerfoot will probably get some shifts in the middle. Holmberg, I think, will get moved around a little bit.
Starting point is 00:42:57 camp maybe i'm not worried one game one game now um uh with the leafs and with the positioning that they're in and they're and they're probably 60 very likely to play tampa okay boston consider losing let me ask you this yeah because ever it's insane that's crazy how they're doing i want to ask you i was thinking about this it's game what 42 43 for them tonight 42 tonight so it's officially the second half of the year if you're sheldon keith and you know those are the odds are you still taking it one game at a time or are you saying guys let's look let's stop fooling ourselves it's like you know because there's there's the athletic let's be brutally honest and then there's the athletic let's completely mind fuck ourselves gaslight ourselves into
Starting point is 00:43:50 believing that this is true like when tom brady goes he finishes number one in the league and nobody believed in us right everybody's with the bucks and he won the super bowl and everybody's like that's what we thought would happen he's like nobody believed that this would happen and we're like tom everybody believed that but but for some people they need that motivation right is this one of those brutally honest coach moments where you go okay guys here's the realistic unless you fall off a fall off a cliff or they fall off a cliff or some other team goes on a boston tear we're probably going to play this team why don't we start preparing for it why don't we start playing the way that and not that they haven't been playing great but is there not some
Starting point is 00:44:28 sort of preparation now that you think goes into every night like remember that's what we're facing i think they had that conversation probably when did training camp start september 15th yeah you think yeah we're probably playing tampa or boston and they were right and so the uh i i think you go into each game prepared for the team in front of you but i do think they are generally organizationally preparing for an inevitable collision course with tampa and you know like you have to dictate your trades based on that too right yeah yeah uc soros is on a heater and he made 64 saves the other night and if the leafs lose the uc soros ah them's the breaks fuck that you're preparing to face andre vasilevsky score some dirty ones that's what you got to do
Starting point is 00:45:19 that's i mean they lit them up they oh how did they lose that series scoring as much as they did on vasilevsky every series there's an uh about it why can't they just get their ass kicked why or win that one they could do that anyway sorry where was i going andre vasilevsky and uc soros on the opposite spectrums of the goalie height scale uc soros is a part of the small goalie crew he's the tiny man and andre vasilevsky is the michelin man also known as the pang gang darren pang you know it is you know it is i love darren pang by the way jail is there anybody with better energy more positive energy than darren pang
Starting point is 00:46:07 I loved working with Darren Pang. Apparently he's just a beauty, like a great guy. It was really brief. Um, and it's not like I had a big role in it, but, um, just behind the scenes, I loved working with Darren Pang and he probably wouldn't even remember my name, but the, I thought. No, he would. Cause he's Darren Pang.
Starting point is 00:46:24 He's Darren Pang. I think the biggest mistake, uh, they made is they didn't have a segment just called, uh, kids table with Darren Pang and PJ stock. Cause both of them just have that like, like puppy dog. and yeah golden retriever energy you would never uh think they both could match each other in that regard they they should have had that and just had like literally given them a topic and a table covered in um like brown paper and crayons and just have them go off like you're at montana's yeah yeah like like you're at jack aster's and all right so pj tell me what you saw in this play
Starting point is 00:47:04 And just have him literally draw it on the table With crayons Here's what the goalie would have done here Holy jumping He was a great guy behind the scenes The percentage of goalies being good broadcasters Is very high The hit rate is unbelievable
Starting point is 00:47:21 Kelly Rudy Just My favorite We need to have Liz Knox on a show Just to have a goalie consortium And just find out Why are goalies so different and also why do you guys have such great personalities yeah and also why are we all
Starting point is 00:47:38 also drummers why do we get along so well with drummers goalies and goalies and drummer goalies are the weirdos of the hockey team oh drummers are the weirdos of the band yeah yeah for sure my dad's a drummer why do you think i ended up this way fair do you think i was raised by two completely normal people one who's like a metalhead and the other who worries you proposed the question like we like you were either of those though so i was a little confused when you when you said we i was i was confused now you understood the phrase yeah well i'm sorry what i meant to say was i was the maberly crescent road hockey goalie oh this guy also makes sense also that was before the ohl right and the tattoos
Starting point is 00:48:22 and that's yeah no now i'm hardcore run how was how was the world juniors that year when you went the uh latvians uh iced a competitive team yeah and uh we only beat them 16 to 3 i didn't have a great night i'm really glad you brought up the world juniors and i'm going to bring this up again friday earlier in the show but we recorded with with gordon miller yesterday uh agent provocateur yeah and he was amazing i find out about the guests for agent provocateur when you all do like i i didn't know you had gordon miller he was like okay so first off we i don't know how we even got into it jesse because you were you were watching it but we were taught he was he was explaining and i think i asked him about like how do you pronounce those names properly right away
Starting point is 00:49:11 these are kids you probably haven't seen play like how did that happen and he goes into different countries and what the he's like you try to get it in english as close to their language but there's certain things that we don't say and then so he went through the czech and the swedish and that we've all been um saying tamu solani's name wrong this entire time oh and peter forsberg and yeah he he used forsberg as an example as well like so it's so good um and then he talks about and i didn't know this happened but it happened in western canada it's happening right now he brought a ukrainian he was one of the guys that brought a ukrainian team over and they played at the mts center 9 000 people showed up and they're playing in the university i guess championship
Starting point is 00:49:50 right now um but it's like so cool and then he rips alan for his twitter account at the end which is so funny it's funny because it's it's so weird because you guys have that recording with gordon miller uh yesterday and then today uh liz and correll on noxie and cax have on isabella germaine who did the pa at the world juniors and it's announcer week on sdpn i guess it is we have those two shows coming out uh agent proctor drops thursday and that drops friday and you had the exact same conversation about the names oh it's funny because you'll do your version of it they do it with gourd and then liz and corral they they talk about that with with isabel and it just came up in conversation like it wasn't planned or anything you guys both
Starting point is 00:50:34 went down the same route because she's she's french um they're both her parents are from montreal and she does her best to give the family she's like okay if the family's in the crowd joshua wa is is there he's french english announcers joshua roy she's like if joshua's dad is in the crowd i want them to hear me say joshua wa i don't i can't do joshua wa yeah it's not even joshua like that oh yeah she she said it was like fantastic it's like butter coming off her tongue so and she's like i want them to hear that because that's gonna just put a little smile on their face that's gonna put a little twinkle in their eye oh that's your and their kid's name correctly pronounced on the pa so you guys they have the exact same conversation that you have
Starting point is 00:51:18 it's a fascinating conversation gourd would call alan uh about um about clients like how do you pronounce the name alan's be like i don't know yeah and you know when you get to know alan a little bit like you have to understand alan doesn't give a shit right like he he doesn't care if you like him he doesn't care if you agree with him that alan is going to be alan and so so like they'll call like gorg would be like okay alan because a lot of his check and slovak clients are one of alan's specialties right everybody from marion gabrick to you know all the people we've had on half of the czech republic is represented by alan absolutely philip ronick so yeah so i guess alan is like zero help zero and alan like when you see him
Starting point is 00:51:56 he's like yep sorry i just i'm not gonna it's very funny very very funny so martin Frick I want to talk about Just back to hockey for a second here Not that that wasn't hockey 17 teams according to Greg Wyshynski As of this morning are using LTIR Yeah
Starting point is 00:52:18 I mean it's a Really smart system Salary cap is there By definition 17 teams are overspending The cap The salary cap is there So that teams spend less money so the league can be more viable and here is more than half the league spending more than that cap
Starting point is 00:52:40 where it's working really well it's silly it's freaking silly and yes i know the leafs are among them i didn't even see the list of course at least i know they're about we've got like three players on long term for sure it's built into the leafs business model for christ's sake yeah that they are we'll spend over the cap most of the most of the shanahan era they've used ltir You know Brent Seabrook is a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning? Yeah. Wasn't there? And was last year as well.
Starting point is 00:53:09 Does he get a ring? Clarkson came back to the Leafs. Who else is on LTIR that's never going to play again? A bunch of guys. A bunch of guys. I mean, potentially Muzzin. Yeah, likely Muzzin, unfortunately. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:53:23 I hope that's not the case, but I want him to take care of his family. Ton of guys. Leafs only have three on LTIR. Brody, Robertson, Muzzin? uh victor mette brody's on ir oh he's not on the full uh muzzin robertson and victor mette on ltir and like you never want a player to get hurt but it is advantageous to use ltir you know who's on ltir for the leafs right now right now like you just mentioned i think jordy ben is and victor mette is right yeah i named the name the three yeah did you say carl dahlstrom uh he's on season
Starting point is 00:54:01 opening injury reserve so he's on like that guy doesn't even start the season it's a different there are different tiers to injury reserves there's a season opening injury reserve and uh amirov is on there and carl dahlstrom's are on is on there amirov's on there yeah that's surprising yeah really yeah i guess he was with the team yeah i hope he's all right we haven't really gotten an update in a while which where where are you going with i don't know Well, I'm sorry. When I saw Dahlstrom was put on injured reserve, and maybe I have the way this works wrong, but I was like, isn't that actually kind of advantageous to the team? Because it allows them to put a guy on LTIR, and it's not even a guy from their roster. That's why I think it's not the LTIR season opening. But Mete is.
Starting point is 00:54:52 Mete is on LTIR. He's a top six defenseman, and he's on LTIR, so they don't lose anyone from their roster, and they get the benefit of LTIR. Yes. They don't get, you know what I mean? So if you call a guy up from the minors, he gets put on LTIR, you are sad about it, but your books, your soulless cold books that have no emotions, are not sad about it at all, because it gives you more money to spend. so just an explanation on season opening injury reserve that's a non-roster designation available if a player is on a two-way contract and played a minimal number or zero nhl games the previous season okay so the leaves don't get any benefit yeah that's a non-roster designation that's they're
Starting point is 00:55:39 they're not gonna play throw them on that to be honest that is the way it should be right because wouldn't every team go to some player who's i mean they have no realistic shot of playing regularly in the nhl they're near the end of their career and just be like hey how's about we pay you a full nhl salary for an entire year and you don't do a thing you don't even got to show up to practice and what do we get we get nearly an extra million dollars on the cap It's funny because a team like Montreal, they didn't make that designation with somebody like Carey Price. You know, he's on LTIR because he's Carey Price, you know, so they have. Shea Weber with Vegas.
Starting point is 00:56:23 Yeah, Shea Weber with Vegas. The Vegas Golden Knights, between IR and LTIR, they got seven guys out. Look at that list. That's a long list. It's a long list. vegas's lti are right now is shea weber uh robin lennar zach whitecloud brett howden and nolan patrick and then they also have on ir uh pavel give me his last name uh dora fave sure and shea theodore yeah shea theodore needs to come back he's on my fantasy team and he's also really
Starting point is 00:57:02 good really good player man a lot of those players on ltir have big old contracts too hey yeah for vegas it's help it helps yeah last year they overdid it yeah last year they got yeah yeah way overdid it um james van reams dyke former leaf what has hit 900 games what do you want to say about james van reams dyke's career oh man um he is six shy of 300 goals by the way he's a i'm surprised he's shy of 300 he's uh he's done it the hard way he's he's battled through a lot of injuries and and um i think he's played hurt a lot um takes an unbelievable you know what i've never heard in an interview like someone ask a player like james van reams like who makes his money at the front of the net who's the hardest cross checker in the
Starting point is 00:57:56 oh that's a good question i want to know who people start asking now now you brought it up whose cross check hurt you the most what is the toughest injury you've ever you gotta think jamie ben's up there ben charot's up there yeah what's the worst bruise you've ever got well jvr would have come up like tail end of pronger's career but i think they would have been teammates thank god for him um you know she would have been he would have cut his teeth playing against shay webber yep uh i don't think he ever got darian hatcher um who like how many ribs were broken because of darian hatcher vertebrae fracture yeah and that was totally that was back when it's like oh that's for you being a man yeah it's tough yeah tough um he's he's a great example there's
Starting point is 00:58:42 been an increased conversation this year with tage thompson um sort of not writing off young highly touted players too quickly um he was drafted second overall in 2007 and because he i think played an extra two years of university he was like forgotten about and when he wasn't unreal immediately oh screw this guy like he was traded for luke shen kind of at the bottom of luke shen's value and it was a risk for the least because jvr made more money that more money by the way was four and a half mil and then he he was one of their better forwards for a long time including a 40 goal season when they were trying to contend 36 36 but yeah he didn't hit 40 no he never hit 40 ever in his career you're a liar no 36 was the most with the leafs and then he signed
Starting point is 00:59:30 the big uh contract with yeah be a roundup yeah yeah i'll give you that i mean his first year in toronto in 48 games it was the shortened year 18 goals but you know the next year again they're trying to be good but that was the next 18 that was the first 18 wheeler year i think uh 27 and 82 like he had he had some really great years and he was fantastic on the power play underrated playoff performer as well right yeah great player i hope he's not uh cooked after this year i hope he keeps going yeah he's only played 21 games but he does have 16 points so far and so if he can just get that's really good man yeah he's he's yeah he's overpaid right now he is yeah and then that contract will expire and then he signs a reasonable deal and hopefully he gets a couple
Starting point is 01:00:14 more years in the league um i want to ask you guys uh i saw this article today and actually full disclosure i used it on the morning show this morning on virgin yeah but i wanted to talk to you guys about it okay so it has to do with toys oh dear now if you remember about five six years ago toys r us in the united states not in canada different company same brand filed for bankruptcy because nobody was buying toys in the same way they're buying them online or whatever freaked out about the giraffe going away yeah they're not not jimmy the giraffe what is his name i don't even know gerald yeah i don't know i don't know anyway long story short the toy business is really back oh and the people that are driving it are those over the age of 25 adults
Starting point is 01:01:00 who buy toys adults who buy toys for themselves not for their kids for themselves are became becoming one of the main contributors to growth in the toy industry according to a report by cnbc They account for roughly one-fourth or 25% of all toy purchases, totaling $9 billion annually in North America. I can't believe that's it. I thought it'd be way more, honestly. I account for $3 billion. What was the last toy you bought, not for Leo, but for yourself? uh i got uh i found a place called rats w-r-a-t in ajax it has all those figures that i have up
Starting point is 01:01:46 on the wall so i was just like because they're actually getting harder to find um are they yeah i bought an edmonton oilers grant fuhrer to replace my canada grant fuhrer on the wall because the canada grant fuhrer box is all screwed up okay and i bought a ray bork because i didn't never ray bork so that was the last is it does that count as a toy or is that a figure i think well i think that's would be in the toy category yeah they're categorized as toys so it's interesting i think this number would be a lot bigger if video games were accounted but they're not yeah that's a different industry that's not a toy yeah okay i feel like the game if you're of that age when you were a kid you played with toys like consistently like now i'm sure kids do still play
Starting point is 01:02:32 with toys and i'm not talking leo leo plays with a billion toys he's two yeah he can't play video games yet but i think once you get to video game playing age aren't you more interested in playing video games than with toys i know when i started playing video games i played with toys less right so like we were the last generation i also think when you start getting into like hardcore video games like when you're like i'm thinking like smash brothers when you have like smash brothers tournaments when you're 14 you're not really in toy zone anymore it's like you're playing sports usually or you know you're not doing play an imaginary like gi joe or whatever yeah um jesse what was the last toy you bought for yourself and i'm asking this question because
Starting point is 01:03:07 i am trying to think of one for me and i don't know i actually don't know yeah i don't i don't really buy toys right that's what i mean yeah how far back can we go here it's uh i forget the year but it's a mustang isn't it adam that's there you go that's a car yeah but it's a toy car that's right toy yeah it's not it's not for practicality no like i totally get this because like when you grow up you do you if you have the privilege to do it you do stuff you couldn't do as a kid yes you know like this is yes i i 100 understand all these people are like yeah i want to play with legos and build those like i see it on like tiktok people like really into lego and they build the amazing lego sets like star wars stuff there is some star wars lego that i want to get my hands
Starting point is 01:03:50 into yeah they they come out they have uh f1 cars now like they have the mclaren one yeah they have the f1 lego sets yeah like that stuff like i'm like oh yeah fucking go at it dude like i don't do it who cares if you're 50 like take yourself have some fun with your life go build the lego now all that kind of okay so we were talking about it on here this morning and and people said exactly that there was one woman who called in and she said me and my husband have um i'm a big harry potter and lord of the rings fan she said her husband's a big deadpool fan he's got like a life-size deadpool like ryan reynolds sized why not he bought it for 1200 it's now worth 4 000 bucks and their collection they estimate is worth 200 000 right oh my god
Starting point is 01:04:32 that's that's a lot that's a lot and and you know what she said like i'm blessed to be able to spend that kind of money it's got to a lot of people that's really stupid and whatever like to each their own if it's your money you spend it the way you want to spend it i'm not going to judge but i think she said i didn't get and he didn't get the toys we wanted when we grew up yeah and now that we have worked hard and we've established ourselves um we are gonna get the toys we want and i thought you know what like who's gonna hate on that it was in it was always a you know how i talk about leaf tickets being a treat and they are i didn't get very many oh just here's a toy like it would have to be a
Starting point is 01:05:13 birthday Christmas Christmas and on very rare occasions if I did well at the end of the school year oh that's nice yeah I never got rewards for that so that's that's a good March birthday June for school and then December that's spread out pretty decent and I made them last for years for sure years what I got
Starting point is 01:05:36 wrestlers were my thing I got wrestlers who would make them wrestle each other. I had the ring. I got a ring when I was like six and everyone fought each other. And it was a great combination of the wrestlers. And then like, I got John Smith from Pocahontas and he was a wrestler.
Starting point is 01:05:51 And Woody from Toy Story became a wrestler. And Megabyte from Reboot. Oh, he'd be a good wrestler. His finishing move was the choke slam at him. Is that what you said? That's what I said. Really creative, Steve. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:08 for sure oh and i would have wrestlemania around my birthday and i made like a card no like yeah and here's the opening card and this guy his finisher is the hurricane rana and oh yeah i'm learning this for the first time i did the same thing i used to have little wrestling figures and i would build a full card and stuff yeah yeah and you might think that's weird because i was 27 but it was no i was i was this was last week right i was like 12 he's got yeah he's got uh he's got his ferrari bed basement right now with no furniture in it so as well and that's what i um i it's interesting that you did that because like okay so my whole thing was i don't know why but like i i just when i saw star wars for the first time it was magic
Starting point is 01:06:49 and it stuck with me for like my parents could have got me a star wars toy for birthday and christmas right up until i was like 14 years old and then i would have been fine right like i would have been like great this is amazing maybe 14 is a little old and i remember i would like set up other toys as though they were in star wars so you know there's little green army men that everybody had a hundred percent like my green army men were also a part of star wars and yeah it was very very important but one thing i've i've noticed is that with some of those toys and i'm sure wrestling's like this too i wasn't into wrestling as a younger kid um i wasn't allowed to be um i got it uh uh those toys have got to be worth a fortune now i remember seeing the x-wing
Starting point is 01:07:31 fighter that i had growing up and you would have you had your x-wing and then you press down on rtd2 and it would go into attack mode so the arms would like the the wings would go out and that's the attack formation right yeah yeah and um i saw it for 350 dollars without the box and i i always wondered who the kids were i remember that scene for 40 year old virgin where it's like do you know what kind of discipline it takes to not take these toys out of the box when you're a child and i i do always wonder how do these how do these toys stay in the box until now you know the lego movie yeah well will ferrell won't let his kid play because he glues it all in place that's leo loves the blue room but i'm will ferrell i'm like please don't touch that i
Starting point is 01:08:12 understand it with the blue room though that's work it's good it's a great exercise in discipline for him because we don't touch his new thing is we never touch but i can't help myself and i'm like i know he'll find this cool so like i had this little russian doll uh leaf thing that i got from a fan in mongolia i remember that that's very cool yeah and it's parachute dolls or whatever they're called uh matryoshka matryoshka and it oh this one's pa parento and you take it off and this one's leo komarov and you take it off and this is nazem kadri and tyler bozak and and it was the first time leo had ever seen that toy oh he's never seen a toy inside a toy so i open it and he was like oh that's just what that's not he's two and a half what you're not gonna believe
Starting point is 01:09:08 it if there's another one in there holy shit there's another one anyway i say all that because leo has not fucked up the blue room what a good boy i did anyway i just thought that was interesting to bring up because uh you know i i have to say having a three and a half year old now going to toys r us is awesome going to toys r us as a baby it's like what you're looking at baby carriages and whatever now i'm like let's go to the star wars section and she's like okay i don't even know what this is but we're gonna go daddy look and that's i get a lot of daddy look wow oh it's still in the basically a cat phase basically you give them something stuffed or a box what did you send me jesse well you need a press conference okay never mind all right okay all right do you
Starting point is 01:09:49 want to do the press conference yeah sure is it all questions about my tattoo i hope so you think you know which way it's gonna go do you no no i'm generally very confused okay well if you do ever figure yourself out you should check out sports interaction and make your bet whatever your sport sports interaction has you covered when do they have you covered though they have you covered on their new app oh that i have a whole thing in my head right now i'm looking at a bet i don't know maddie benears and jim montgomery throwing them to win the jack adams and calder whoa pre-game live betting on all major sports and prop bets like jesse just pointed out check it out if you want to bet head to sports interaction.com sdpn or you download the app in
Starting point is 01:10:31 the app store super easy uh 19 plus please play responsibly like toony steve the presser s d p the steve dangle press conference all right join us on discord we have an sdpn discord you can join at sdpn.ca there's a little link that says join us on discord click that and head over to the press conference questions server channel where you can ask questions like el seldo did el seldo said sup nerds for the press conference the qmjhl needs a new commissioner and has a public job posting for it please choose which one of you should apply for it and what would your first move be adam steve wow no you and i let's take a look at this and see if adam is qualified to be commissioner of the quebec major junior hockey league uh they have their role the roles and the
Starting point is 01:11:37 duties and the services all laid out there adam do you want to go through this okay um well we've got uh let's say the role of the application of constitution regulations and policies as a qmjhl protection of the integrity of the sport negotiation and representation investigation and discipline dispute resolution creation of committees in their sole discretion as may be required establishment of the commissioner's office they didn't put the most important one which is knows the last one this is hockey let's stop kidding it took me a second yeah yeah that's true suitable candidate must have the following skills and qualities all right here we go ability to reflect uh and use one's experience for better decision making knowledge of a high performance
Starting point is 01:12:18 sport community ability to mobilize stakeholders towards the same objective and work within a collaborative environment with all actors involved strong and adaptable interpersonal skills with good sense of diplomacy ability to understand and interpret laws and regulations ability to enforce them and take disciplinary action expertise going beyond field of sports i would imagine that you have to be you have to be a lawyer adam you're six for six and here's the thing the next commissioner must have strong communication communication skills and demonstrate political and influencing skills well i am an influencer seven for seven um i'm kidding uh ability to speak in public in front of cameras well you're not gonna have them all yeah ability to easily
Starting point is 01:12:57 communicate orally in english and french formally and informally knowledge of the brand of the qmjhl and strong marketing presence in public relations to support and re-establish the press this is interesting strong marketing and public relations to support and re-establish the prestige of major junior hockey and i think that says something because they obviously believe that the prestige from major junior hockey has taken a major hit and rightfully so uh yeah so that's interesting that they're i mean is hockey canada even doing that i mean i know they're better now the board's better and everything i don't think the organization has done anything yet but i know that they've got better people involved that's a fascinating uh wow five to eight years of experience in a position
Starting point is 01:13:46 of influence and strategic management experience uh in experience in human resources budget management interpretation of an application of laws and regulations and negotiation is an asset so you're basically a lawyer who's done something else i think it's fascinating that it's publicly posted yeah i think that's the most interesting thing isn't that the law though don't you have to i don't think so no okay i mean i don't remember ever seeing something like the head of the they're doing a search for the head of the new uh of the nhlpa they need a new head right right there's no job description like do i go on and what is it monster.ca and look up that job and apply like no they're gonna go get all the heads and they're gonna go um find the candidate right and then
Starting point is 01:14:32 interview and go through that whole process but I thought it was very fascinating when they threw this on the press conference questions channel that hey we can just go read what it's required to be a commissioner of major junior hockey and you know you can also hold them
Starting point is 01:14:48 accountable with it when they screw up you're like hey are you protecting the integrity of the sport and also showing expertise going beyond the field of sports they they bold very they bold
Starting point is 01:15:06 words with little to no pattern expertise going beyond the field of sports wow need to do that Microsoft Word
Starting point is 01:15:24 not a requirement not a requirement you don't know you might have an assistant who can use that so you're just hiring an idiot then I have somehow been able to make it through most of my life Not knowing Excel and I'm grateful for that Because every time I see someone who does use Excel I'm like oh my god I don't think it's very fun
Starting point is 01:15:39 It doesn't sound fun I don't think it would have come up in any of your jobs No and I'm grateful for that I'm grateful for that because it makes my eyes spin I'm just You're giving me flashbacks to when I had to When I worked for Junior Hockey Magazine And had to call up
Starting point is 01:15:55 All the different stations Or all the different teams and i would always call the qmjhl first because they were the first ones awake oh smart well the eastern teams especially not the quebec is in the same time zone but the uh the nova scotia teams and uh new brunswick teams were up and uh you would call and they would say hello and you would say hello and the reaction to your hello varied just oh it was like oh hello or the friend you know it's funny french in france as well same thing oh really uh they're like you say bonjour and they're like okay i speak english i get it and uh there's someone on tiktok who
Starting point is 01:16:41 pretends to be like a like a barista or whatever in france and it every conversation starts the same i speak english just looking at you like you're a booger last question last thing here this question comes from lay i'm not going to read the question directly it's basically what are your thoughts on what's happening in the in wwe and i don't want to touch this with a 10 foot pole because i don't feel like i'm smart enough to know what's going on i just don't have all the information but you guys are quite passionate about vince mcmahon's going ons and his selling of the wwe so i'm gonna give you three minutes on the clock as we end the show okay what are your thoughts on what's going on here so i'm not gonna get terribly in depth either but i do feel
Starting point is 01:17:25 like i know just enough to take up the three minutes okay uh adam wild you gotta give him some space i'm i'm gonna i'm gonna you said you want to comment before you go no no you steve you go okay so i think people want to hear what you want to see you have to say steve don't fill a buster the whole time no take it take your cool some time take it a variety of things happened in wrestling this past year it was one of the most dramatic years in in terms of story in professional wrestling in recent memory uh and a lot of that centered around vince mcmahon and now his 2022 started real hot he was in wrestlemania for god's sake he took a stunner from stone cold Steve Austin at WrestleMania less than a
Starting point is 01:18:09 year ago, um, then accusations of sexual misconduct piled up and I mean, piled up lots and lots and lots. So I think it totaled 22 million paid out or something like that. And the misuse of company funds. Right. So a lot of Vince McMahon is in WWE for
Starting point is 01:18:27 one thing and one thing only to make them money, to make them lots and lots of money. and uh he allegedly misused company funds to pay hush money for the many accusations of sexual misconduct not all of them i believe were settled um and he made his way out of the company because it was very obvious he was bad for business triple h polovec uh takes over creative and stephanie mcmahon after resigning um ends up rejoining wwe um and they're married and they're in their power duo right yeah so stephanie mcmahon is vince mcmahon's daughter uh triple h is vince mcmahon's son-in-law but triple h very obviously from a creative standpoint saw vince mcmahon uh
Starting point is 01:19:18 saw a lot of vince mcmahon's decisions uh as bad and changed them and the reason for that is they were bad and needed to be changed a lot of his story decisions frigging sucked and uh you there should be no working 70 plus year old billionaires you're 70 plus and a billionaire go to a beach go away go to a beach go away um which would have been great if he did that it still wouldn't have made him guilty or not guilty of of what he was accused of emphasis on the uh guilty made him not guilty yeah um so basically what's happened i don't quite understand how but when he left the company he didn't fully leave he still owns part of it right yeah so he's come back several people have been punted to the side and wwe's board is now packed with province people stephanie mcmahon
Starting point is 01:20:19 has retired uh not retired sorry she's resigned again um and wwe has allegedly been sold to uh a saudi group that i believe is government are they is that the fund that owns live golf as well yeah yes the exact same company yeah it's the saudi public something fund the public development fund or something so wwe which is which is publicly traded public investment fund public investment wwe is publicly traded will allegedly now go private and the problem with that is when a company is publicly traded there's a lot more transparency and you're held accountable by people who invest in you and the shareholders and everything now it's going to go private and they can do whatever the fuck they want the latest is also that they were not sold that a deal is not
Starting point is 01:21:09 in place oh it's not there's and this is why i can't do longer than this is there are a million rumors out there a deal has not been done but it's rumored that a deal is in place in principle um and for a lot of people this is they're done with professional wrestling forever and for a lot of people they're done done with wwe and uh i have a hard time blaming them because Vince McMahon is a cartoon villain monster of a person. Um, you know, look at what he's doing to his own family, uh, let alone, uh,
Starting point is 01:21:49 you know, to people not in his family and, oh yeah, the, uh, Saudi investment group might not be the greatest bunch of folks either. Um, so I've after six or five, six months of genuine optimism for WWE, uh, this is one of the darkest days in their history and i think i think too and this is where this is what's been interesting about the business side of it for me i always find the business
Starting point is 01:22:19 side of sport interesting or in sport and entertainment i guess in this case and it's darren revell oh no well no no i don't want i don't want to be as beloved as darren revell is uh everybody loves him i want to see your 50-year debt yeah no what i what i find fascinating about this is the wwe forever has been able to really they've only really been challenged a couple of times with wcw and uh what was the other one wcw was the major challenger but there was a tna yeah wcw was the only one that really that really challenged them and then they bought tna was a legitimate uh um entity yeah in the sphere but they they never uh threatened to topple them right aew is the most realistic competitor wwe has had since
Starting point is 01:23:07 wcw and that's what i wanted to bring up because a lot of wrestling fans like aew a lot better than the wwe if they were both starting from zero today aew would probably still be on would be on top but the wwe has 50 years of history but they ain't but they ain't because they got you know the wwe can still go and sell out an arena where they're doing smaller smaller places and I think it's fascinating because they've been able To operate basically with impunity In that space because who was going to challenge them But I think they had an opportunity
Starting point is 01:23:38 To really modernize this company And bring it into the new world And they chose not to And I think this is a huge opportunity For AEW to say We're not Like sometimes the best Brand is
Starting point is 01:23:54 Most of the time it's not but sometimes the best Brand is we're not them Oh yeah we are what you like and we're not them sometimes that's the best thing to be and i i think it'll be fascinating to see how this goes i i think this might be good for impact wrestling oh yeah like there are there are so many fascinating storylines like uh there there are droves of people who left wwe went to aew and some of them benefited from it and they got big pushes and they got to do the wrestling that they wanted to and they got to be treated like the star
Starting point is 01:24:29 that they thought they were others found themselves in the mid card just like they were in wwe and undervalued in wwe and they wanted to go back to wwe especially when triple h took over and some of those nxt people from wwe's basically minor league system developmental some of those undervalued nxt people that went over to aew wanted to go back to wwe and the most fascinating one to me is actually a behind the scenes guy do you remember william regal the the british guy push up his bicep loved him um so he's like a huge developmental guy behind the scenes so he left wwe uh when vince basically took over nxt and ruined it um he went to aew but then soon after triple h takes over and william regal was essentially triple h's right hand man so he
Starting point is 01:25:29 didn't want to be in aew anymore and it's my understanding that they parted ways amicably William Regal very recently went back to WWE and it sounds like Triple H is right on the verge of getting punted again wow so it's honestly it's like succession but wrestling yeah so
Starting point is 01:25:49 like let's say I don't know any of this but let's say William Regal signed a deal with WWE and it's for three years and it's you know full no compete
Starting point is 01:26:04 WWE, uh, could just be like, all right, we're going to pay you, but you're going to be a paid hostage for the next three years. You're not going to be doing any work for us. You're not going to be doing any work for AEW. You're not going to be doing any work for anyone. Call that a gardening contract. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:26:20 And like, this is because it's so eerily, now that I'm watching succession, now it's so eerily succession style that I wouldn't put anything past them. Interesting. Vince has complete control And he's so So much worse
Starting point is 01:26:39 In real life than he ever was In kayfabe Right okay Fascinating I wanted to get that thought That's cool that's a monster Okay so we will be back Friday But do not forget that tomorrow Brand new Agent Provocateur with
