the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake
hello everybody and we're back in studio after a really fun time with the ohl and the peterborough
for the top prospects game uh we saw a couple sweet novotny goals that was pretty cool uh my
dms have been filled with death threats from oshawa oh yeah that's great you wore a peach
jersey yeah raider not literally death threats but people are upset and two guys at the game
were like dangle and i turn around and they just go traitor i think they made the drive
yeah sorry i can be black yeah it was it was a great time i want to thank the ohl i want to
thank the peterborough peets and specifically eric ebenbauer from the peterborough peets who
really made this happen brian crawford uh the commissioner of the of the ohl was on the show
on wednesday and you know normally when you do an interview like that uh everybody prepares for
okay well this is going to be stale and boring uh and he was anything but like it was actually
like a really fun sort of rowdy interview at a certain point see like he's a he's a wicked dude
while we were setting up he just walked onto the ice unannounced yeah oh i am here yeah well because
Because I remember I moved some of the equipment.
I'm like, well, Brian's going to have to walk through here.
And he's like, yes, I will.
Yeah, yeah.
He's a very, very nice guy.
Really, really interesting.
And I think he's injecting some life and some new energy into the OHL, which is very cool.
It's always good when you get some new ideas.
They did a great, great moment of silence for David Branch as well, which I thought was really nice.
And I am excited to do.
We have another OHL event before the end of the season.
Can't announce yet, but it is in southern Ontario.
uh and we're very excited it's in ontario yeah tell you that i said southern you did so you know
you're not you don't have northern greyhounds wolves i'm sorry yeah 67s 60 no battalion no
67 yeah anyway so that's happening uh and the reason i wanted to spend more time on that
is because i don't want to talk about this um i'm gonna be honest with you i was a grouchy
little boy i haven't slept a lot the last few days because we've been running around and that
sort of thing western road trip also western road trip too same week right but i was a sour little
boy after overtime yesterday i was a angry sour embarrassing crash out kind of guy i gotta tell
you based on the group chat i think i'm handling this pretty well you're handling it better than
myself and a couple other guys yeah yeah yeah yeah i'm i'm just i'm better this morning you
know sometimes you get a chance to sleep on it but i was slapping pillows on my couch angry it's a
bad loss no matter who it was against right you had multiple two goal leads you led with eight
seconds left it was tied with seven you got saved by your video staff um and uh in overtime some of
your biggest players wilted wilted wilted wilted yeah right you you wanted uh you you you put it
away like you forecasted this game in a way that i hadn't really thought of like how big it is for
the fans and everything it's like no it's stars going head to head don't you want to get the best
uh like i don't care if he's your buddy that's another star in this league for months people
have been like oh well it looks like you need him right don't you want to show him up and Matthews
was well he got three points did he yeah great he was on the ice for five against what's bigger
five or three I've heard five is bigger but I have to go back and check okay well might want
to try again then uh there were and by the way William Nylander came out scored a couple of
points and on the celebration of the second of the his second point which is his goal uh he
re-aggravated his ankle injury and he may be out a couple more weeks or he could be dead we don't
know uh you have no idea we don't know if we're leaving him in winnipeg no idea he had a great
career so he's not going to winnipeg he's not going to winnipeg oh he's coming home no there's
just gonna put him straight into what's the area in the desert there's a crematorium thing whatever
that is jesse if there was one thing last night that stood out to you because it was a frustrating
loss stood out to you where you go ah about it what's your ah reaction it's the leads it's two
oh three one four two and five three that's unacceptable in the nhl if you have a lead
heading into the second uh the second intermission so heading into the third period generally nhl
teams at a very high rate convert on two points heading into the back half of the third period
yes like yeah oh yeah you had what was it 10 or 11 minutes guys looking at nhl.com right now and
some of the stats the least have the worst win percentage amongst any team when leading after
two periods they have a 632 uh i should say win points percentage win percentage sorry uh 632
that's last in the league and if you go through the teams i'll even bring it up for all you guys
generally teams convert at a 900 win percentage and above yeah that sucks ass through a straw
the top how how the top 12 teams in the league are above 900 on the win percentage when entering
the third period with a lead and like i said the least are down at the bottom 32nd at 632
that is unacceptable for an nhlt they should be able to convert on two goal leads multiple times
throughout the games and then the two goal lead in the third period so to me that's the big thing
that i look at i hate that i saw it coming like it i streamed last night's game and from the first
period onward like the leafs have this i mean better than you could have possibly asked for
start minus losing one of their freaking star players on a goal celebration but um they're up
to nothing and i'm like guys like vegas games have been complete chaos this season no game is ever
over they blow a lot uh leads um but also they're the team who erases it they led the league and
come back wins heading into this game they got another they got their eighth 19 of their 45 or
whatever it is games this season have gone at least to overtime um their games don't finish
they have a real uh problem with uh the final buzzer they don't like it so they avoid it as
long as they possibly can and you're right in that you could see it coming because it reached
a certain point in that third period where the ice just completely tilted the other way and it
felt inevitable that they would get the goal and then they did get the goal and i thought the leaf
saved themselves with the challenge i thought like oh yeah that was the goal that was the one that
was gonna do it and then they just got lucky you know two points and then after that they blow it
once again i was like you guys you can't do that i can i just want to talk about the callback goal
for a second sure you know lost in the i think it was dorothea that was offside yes um offside
and scored right lost in that was the abysmal coverage by philip myers and i understand that
this guy is one of the bottom six of the 12 defensemen that they use um this is a guy that's
not playing with any confidence and i know that again that goal was called back but it didn't
need to happen at all i i think he has been to me on the defensive side the most disappointing
player this year because he played as a seventh defenseman played 49 games last year
pretty well there's not much justification for well i mean ben walk comes out of the lineup
there's not much justification for why for why oh he was okay well there's not much justification
for why benning has just been sitting there eating popcorn he had one game it was pretty good
myers has played a lot of games a lot of them are pretty bad but can i be a jerk yeah you can and
you haven't been able to say this too often in recent months mix in a safe yeah yeah like there's
you know bad coverage leads to scoring chances that's how it works right like any goal you could
be like oh well the reason it went in is because of this guy or that guy mixing a safe hill to be
was not good enough in the utah game not even close but like the whole team was abysmal uh
vegas leafs gave you five mixing a safe that's uh joseph wall's been excellent he's had such a good
season he was one of the principal reasons they beat the colorado avalanche that was also their
most recent win um that wasn't a good enough game from your starting goalie all right and i don't i
don't know how many points of of contention about this game you want to hit on but like
easton cowan don't take a penalty oh my god can't do that man the game that's a bad penalty could
not believe he played another shift well that's i said i said that to nat my wife i was like he
can't after that penalty he can't play again tonight like he should not play without that
shift like he didn't miss a shift and i understand why berube is doing that right you want you want
him to grow at a certain point though like he's had really good moments and you can tell that
it's there you can tell that the skill is there you can tell that the drive is there he's going
to figure it out but you do sometimes need to say this is a close game and a penalty like that is
straight up carelessness that's unfocused it's bullshit and you saw berube on the bench they
went to him and he was furious you can't take an offensive zone penalty in a game like that
producer drew is like that's like when you mess up and you don't want to go home yeah all i can
think about is uh i'm getting grounded i got a speeding ticket once and so i stayed at my job
three extra hours unpaid yeah i didn't want to go home i didn't want to go home that that skate
back to the bench scary no thing ruby mentioned in his post game too i don't know if you want
to play it but yeah let's do it he mentioned that as one of the points too just a couple
mistakes in the third period i mean we give up a two-on-one you know we take a penalty no need
no need for that penalty and they scored again and then you know the goalie out i mean
it's a couple words but him saying no need for that penalty is huge he would not directly call
out a player's mistake unless that's something he felt was very consequential to the outcome of the
game 195 feet from his net also also when he saw it on the bench on the replay he was like i could
read what his mouth said he said jesus fucking christ uh so i think that's a bit of a downgrade
for how he actually feels.
And I can play the rest of it.
Please.
Yeah, we just, three missed, well, you know, the tying goal,
I mean, it's tough.
Like, we have a broken stick and you can't cover everybody.
So, that was a tough play, but seven seconds.
But, you know, I just, we didn't finish him off.
You know, I think we can probably do a better job
in the third period of, you know,
just managing a little bit better than we did.
you can't give up that two on one and you know there's no need for that penalty either
he mentioned it two times yeah i tell you what tomorrow night against winnipeg easton now might
be a best time for the uh the the best game of your life yep or that he is if william neilander
wasn't injured uh he might be a marley today like that's how pissed he said he started his answer
with no need for that penalty and ended his answer with no need for that penalty and anybody
who's wondering by the way i think the least were up 4-2 at that point and that was the goal that
let them back in yeah i think you're right and then vegas scored lot and made it 5-3 and then
you know it's funny how they were uh within one vegas was after that goal and then the least
managed to make it a two goal lead again yes and then also couldn't hold on to that two goal lead
awesome stuff guys yeah so so one thing that kind of you know going into this season
everybody's talking about well how do you replace marner and his 100 points and i and i totally
understand that um that's an easy conversation to pick at when you look at this roster and go
this is flawed the one thing they have been able to do especially since um even even actually when
they were getting shit goaltending and they were terrible at the beginning of the season
um they could always score their goals per game was always amongst the highest they just couldn't
defend and one is a good defensive player when the yes when when the conversation shifted to
well, maybe they actually do make a move to try to improve this team.
It's surprising that it's not, hey, we'd like to mix in a top six winger.
I'm sure they would.
They don't have the assets.
But what's become abundantly clear is they need some smart,
steady veteran help back there.
And I couldn't help but look at last night's game and go, listen,
I know Scott Arneal does not like Luke Shen.
I can tell you Luke Shen would be a definitive upgrade over what they have
unless Dakota Mermis wants to come back and play the way he did.
and I would expect Dakota to take a little while
to get to the level he was at.
I like the idea of the Leafs getting a smart vet back there
who's going to play third pairing minutes.
It's a fascinating conversation
because even some Jets fans are like,
man, the Jets aren't very good
and there's a reason he's not playing.
Luke Shen was a Leaf 2023.
It looked awesome.
It's three years.
A guy his size at his age,
the amount of miles that's a that's an eternity ago yeah right it is don't necessarily expect the
guy from a few years ago but he doesn't need to be Riley's d partner he needs to be better than
it would appear Philip Myers or I guess Simone Benoit yeah I mean I'd like him to be if if this
were an ideal situation and you can do and Tanev's in the lineup which he's not I do Tanev McCabe
oel stetcher riley shen in a heartbeat dude or or or ben wash and if tanaf was healthy their
their six is great it's a very good group it would be tanaf mccabe riley carlo oel stetcher
yeah that's fantastic i don't think we can count on tanaf being back anytime soon exactly yeah
it's probably after olympics if we're looking at anything optimistically i i don't expect him to
play another game this year no no um just the way they were talking about it and they seem to be
hemming and hawing about surgery and if it's surgery he's cooked obviously they can make a
decision on that if they do it sooner rather than later than they can get a little bit more cap
space because then he can go on season ending ir where he just doesn't play at all and you get a
little bump on the cap space so and then he could always come back in the playoffs right no no no
that's that's the change that's where it's like if you go on that ir you're done done and you
can't play well they they're non-committal with everything i can't see them doing that so like
i'd like well be decisive though right it's interesting right like so let's say here's
something they could do that i think would be smart let's say you go out and you get luke shen
today and you try him out and you have him play as much as he can with this team and try to
stabilize things um trade deadline comes around you're not in a playoff spot and you're maybe
three points four points back you can then make the decision to trade luke shen and recoup that
asset that you paid for him so if the leafs were gonna make some kind of a move here i'd like them
to do it toot sweet um but you know otherwise uh so many of the things that they've been relying
on recently have kind of faltered and they faltered in this game we talked about joseph
wool and how fantastic he's been we've talked about his cartoony save percentage on the penalty
kill we talked about the leafs cartoony percentage on the penalty kill um we talked about them
scoring at like 45 on the power play you're not going to be able to rely on these things all the
time and last night was a bit of a regression and you still came within seven seconds of winning
they put up five goals you put up five goals but um you didn't do enough to win that's the beginning
middle and end uh back to the game i i personally don't know if the leaf should be buying at this
point like shen would i 100 agree like shen would be an upgrade on the lineup but whatever assets
you'd have to pay i don't even know if i want future future considerations that's what i think
it would be if that's how bad it's a free player yeah take it i think it's troy stetcher you know
then it's like oh we might get something awesome here you know who knows what is the most like a
seventh like you're not playing what here's what i'd say to chevy not that you don't value luke
shen but i'd be like chevy you're not freaking playing this guy we have the cap space with uh
tanev and joshua out on ir whatever you guys are having a garbage season i'll throw you a seventh
if they have one or a sixth just to make i don't think anybody's doing you any favors so here's
the Leafs picks right uh for the next three years this year they got a fifth and a sixth no seventh
next year they have a fifth two sixths and a seventh and the year after that they have five
six and seven okay well what if you did this what if you throw him an AHL guy say somebody can help
your your AHL team like and it's not because you're trying to I mean obviously you're trying
to throw Chevy an anchor because it's the NHL but you know one thing that the the Jets could
benefit from with an early trade with shen is getting that was it 3.5 3.6 off the book uh 275
i think okay whatever it is so here let me let me give you a a decent solution henry thrun
and henry thrun makes uh a mil or maybe a little over a mil instead of retaining on shen you're
getting i mean listen thrun's a young defenseman but you're obviously not smitten with the guy
and he was sort of a cap dump what if that's the answer you could go benning i think i'd rather
have him well I'd rather play him I'd rather play him but also if you're not going to do that why
not Benning yeah the one of Benning or Thrun at least he's an NHL player right the Jets have six
million dollars in cap space so they're not hurting for space yeah but they're hurting for actual
dollars like fans aren't going to the games right and oh you're trying to save them I don't I think
you could save them some money I don't think they'd be against that I don't think they're
looking at that and trying to make their team worse just to save a couple dollars it's I don't
Can it get much worse?
I don't think you can get worse than last, can you?
I don't know.
I'm not looking to add to the Leafs is all I'm trying to say.
I wouldn't want to send out anything.
If it's free, I'll take it, but I'm not trying to lose assets.
I mean, they could just take Shen home with them.
They're playing him tomorrow night.
Yeah.
Back to the game, because I think it's important to point out
that the Leafs should have had the game, too,
and the refs blew it for them.
Oh, that.
The interference was coming around the back of the net.
Oh, my God.
I couldn't believe this wasn't called.
And Aiden Hill body checks Lawton when he's coming around the back of the net.
This is interference.
To borrow the Department of Player Safety's words in their videos, this is interference.
That is what it is.
Yep.
And the ref who is standing in the corner, I don't know if you can see.
Oh, yeah, there he is.
Hey, you're looking at the play.
So now he's over there, decides to not call this because, I don't know, it's late in the game and it's anarchy.
But it's a penalty.
and so much hurdle goes down the other end and buries this goal in the same sequence he completely
shit rocks a lot oh yeah i didn't even complete the uh screen i forgot to mention two aiden hill
things in the lfr from this game his ridiculous scorpion save yeah and this i i was i in the
moment like because you could see it on the edge of the screen during the stream i was like what
the freak was that he knocks his ass down that's a penalty every day of the week and the refs in
this moment cost the Leafs the game they didn't do themselves favors yeah like you got to be good
to get lucky yeah you got to be lucky to get good and in this case they put themselves in a situation
where if you don't get one call you can lose the game at the other end yeah that's all in the Leafs
but they should have had this one call hockey brutal hockey has a massive nice problem where
like your goalie rocks a player nice that's sick okay yeah there's like rules though
the nhl gets further and further away from a sport like every day yep like it's an entertainment
product yeah okay fine that's good you you gotta tell yourself but like let's not forget what this
is like okay let's let's just play no pucks no sticks either laser tag give them all laser guns
and hook them up like what what's what's even the point call shit by the way this is especially when
it's very consequential like that end of the game uh blatantly obvious this is a uh christmas gift
i got from the guy who runs my uh beer league this card and i thought this was a perfect transition
inside the card he got me a lovely gift it is a signed rookie card of george paris oh i thought
it was garrett rank no mustache oh wow signed oh no must yeah that's that's a george friggin
peros autograph that's what that looks like i know he's not a ref and i know he wasn't on the
last night i do like to rip on him any chance i get the disrespect of aiden hill too in this
moment when he's committing an infraction to then stand over lawton like he's iverson standing over
tyron liu when he walked over him back in the day it's what are you doing here everybody in this
instances just needs to understand we're playing a game of hockey and this is a penalty well yeah
but i'm gonna stand over him no you committed an infraction your team should be down a man
yeah i you know i i tried to fold this guy's spine like a suit but like have you considered
you're less of a man for thinking that's a problem have you considered that i'm not even
talking about hill anymore i'm talking about the nhl at large this listen they blew the game they
blew it they lost they shouldn't have lost shame on them yeah okay that's a penalty i'd also it's
penalty i'd also like to bring up that the first two periods were pretty excellent uh they were
doing things that definitely offensively no second was good i know i know they traded goals in the
second but you have to remember that you're not going to win every see here's the thing this is
what analytics have done to us okay we forget with analytics that it's like oh man they they got the
first period you know those those graphs that have like right the rate of play do you know that it's
crazy sometimes nhl players push back well and they and a team that dominates a first period
can't continue it throughout the entire second period because these are nhl players every single
night i know in the second period i'm holding them to the standard of the first which is excellent
which impossible it's difficult they've been a garbage second period team so to me i'm like hey
as one of the worst second-period teams in the NHL
to hold a division leader, which Vegas is,
to a goal in the second period,
and you're trading off because you scored two.
I'm good with that.
I think they were doing great things.
They've gotten away, thank God,
and Jesse mentioned this earlier this week,
from the dump and change.
It should be dump and chase.
They do get it low now, and there are chasers,
which is great,
Yeah. But they also have other ways of making entries into zones. And I thought what they really did last night very well, especially early on, was they got it down low and were able to make plays. You know, obviously you miss William Nylander when he's gone, but they still scored without him and they scored without him when he wasn't in the lineup.
they are doing a great job down low in creating opportunities and you know I saw a couple missed
opportunities last night too for the Leafs to sort of put it away obviously the Bobby McMahon
almost goal where Aiden Hill made that great save amazing you can't count on that that's you know
rock them sock them highlight sort of shit I want to say it's not even the first scorpion save of
Aiden Hill's career like he's done that a couple times but when we look at what I think the Leafs
were doing really well the last few games especially against like Colorado is they have
somebody in front of the net all the time and the other person who comes out to try to get them the
puck doesn't stay perimeter they drive to the front of the net until they're basically stopped
up and pull a couple guys and then they pass it and i think that's a huge step forward we haven't
seen previous leaf teams do that you know that one of the arguments that i've always made about why
the leafs and specifically mitch marner were ineffective in the playoffs is they were too
perimeter martin was not a net driver right i thought he was i thought he was really good
last night i thought he was ordinary yeah um i mean he's a centerman now he's a center so
you definitely grade on a curve like that's hard i know he had two assists they were on the power
play which counts yeah obviously but five on five i thought he was ordinary yeah he was there was
some float going around i think he's still adjusting jack eichel was ridiculous yeah
ridiculous and it was a miracle he didn't score before the overtime winner is there an nhl player
that turns more red every game than jack eichel um that that is the reddest human being i've ever
seen every time he plays hockey he goes from like because jack's pretty pale and then by mid game he
is he is like stoplight red uh and they're the intensity and you know he loves lighting the
leaves up loves it dating back to his time in buffalo he's like a uh like a poisonous toad
like the the more vibrant his color gets the the more dangerous he is right so he was dangerous
last night he was he was i thought uh i i did think and we'll see i guess next friday if this
is true i do think and we've seen in the results this year vegas looks very human they do they won
six straight yeah but they've you know having lost like guys like william carlson and things like
that yeah i know they've won six straight overall we should have won that game oh everyone in the
pacific division looks human i think it's entirely goaltending for them right now if they were
getting saves throughout like this entire season so far which they haven't been the season looks
entirely different in terms of their record and all of those close games and the ot winners like
if they get a couple saves because carter heart garbage and then got injured aiden hill injured
can't do anything and then anybody that they try to put in there hasn't really been up to standard
so hopefully now got a pretty good record he has he hasn't been like hey he's he's the starter and
like we're happy with that so hopefully now for if you're golden eyes fan aiden hill's in there
and he'll be solid for them for this next round it also helps that the oilers have been like
you know what take it just take it everyone in the pacific division has been like here take it
this is uh this might be the easiest path uh to a division win you could possibly ask for now and
you got to remember like them signing carter hart was out of desperation because the goaltending
situation was so poor right so and he booted akira schmidt out and he's been their best goalie
yeah like your smith's got the best numbers of any big school um uh marner said before the game
that he said oh it's just another game but then after the game said obviously my teammates knew
that this one meant a little more to me uh you know this is very it's very mitch let me just
i when he talks to the media i don't think he's talking to the media i think he's talking to
himself and that's something that i that dates back to his time in toronto just another game
or or uh yeah we just got to flush it are you telling that are you telling us that are you
telling you that and i think it's more you now well i was pretty turned off by austin uh before
the game going i'm sick of the mitch questions all right get a pulse get a pulse like i guess
it's the same criticism i've had for years these games don't mean as much to them as they do to us
so until they i mean i saw i thought his goal celebration meant that it meant a lot well yeah
so what are you being snooty to mark masters for also mixing a back check how about that how about
you're the captain maybe cover the guy in that front how about that careful steve i wouldn't
want you to run him out of town oh no with legitimate criticism um that's that's that's
any star player's achilles heel mark stone's reaction when the goal went in it he like
basically did like a golf shot he was so excited you can i thought it was a bat flip yeah you could
could tell that they wanted it for Mitch
and Mitch got booed on home
ice by a bunch of Leaf fans who were down there. That's crazy.
I couldn't believe that. I've been
wondering for a while now, but I wanted
to wait and see how this game went before we had this
conversation. Obviously
next Friday night. They don't have a game Saturday next
week. Stupid. Stupid.
Should have been on Hockey Night in Canada, but it's not.
Friday night, Leafs,
Vegas Golden Knights in Toronto next week.
What type
of reception are we expecting? Because I
was thinking, okay,
listen i know people don't love the way that he left and steve simmons
pointed out again that his family were like house shopping in like yeah it was disgraceful late
winter he was out the door for a long we knew this was happening um i still blame management
more than i blame him he's got every right to go if he wants to go i blame management for hanging
on as long as they did shanahan is the number one problem there yeah but i would also put that
on true living as well for not pushing back harder um he just got is this gonna be and this is what
i'm a little bit worried about fans could do whatever the fuck they want is this gonna be
like a vince carter first time back in toronto type thing do you remember that it could be like
producer drew laid out uh miko renton's return in colorado according to him it was every time
he touched the puck boo then they show his video yeah and then every time after that boo
i have a feeling it'll be like that for mitch you don't boo a video tribute like that's insane
um they probably you know i think you're entirely wrong about that i think it's
majority booze i think it's like 70 30 and like during his hey welcome back mitch there will be
booze oh there's gonna be like a smattering of them for sure but like i also want people to be
open to the idea that there are going to be people there are going to be that building is
going to be full of Leaf fans and a lot of them
are going to cheer for Mitch Marner. Yes, they
are. And I think the other half
will boo him. He's going to be booed at least as
loudly as he was last night. Yeah.
Yeah. Do you think it'll be? I mean, this is
a guy who was booed every time he touched the puck in game
seven by the home crowd.
Well, yeah, they were down six one. They
got booed at the at the end of it, too, when
they were doing their stick wave to the fans.
Yeah, well, they wouldn't.
No.
Okay. Fair enough. I was going to say you got a
40 minute rant on him.
about game seven well he wasn't a leaf in game seven was he yeah there you go foot out the door
i don't think he was a leaf in games any of the 13 games they played in the playoffs last year
uh he was just a leaf in color only right you know in the it wasn't a leaf for a single game
last season so that you know that that's where i'm i'm kind of curious because obviously you're
going to get the people who tut-tut everything you're like this is why nobody wants to play
in toronto i would like those people to fuck off from sports entirely stop wasting everyone's
time i don't think it's it i think they're like yeah it's you're talking about fanaticism please
stop i don't think it's going to be tavar as level but i think it's gonna be just below that
i actually don't think it's going to be um as warm as a of a reception as we think it is can i well
people think so i'd be honest about i think people are angry at him i i think you're right jesse and
i think they've got every right to be searching for houses down there you know on your lap like
and not accepting a trade and everybody knows it was going to be miko ranton and coming back and
from everything we've heard miko was open to signing an extension in two places toronto and
dallas it and so it's not his fault so no 2023 i know i get that i get that but my point is this
you will look at it nuanced like that because we are this close to it right right the average
person only does not think about a fucking no trade class they're thinking about hey i heard
that your family was searching for this and i heard that you're the reason we don't have
and you were talking to ryan reeves about what it's like to play in vegas and blah blah
which all happened we could have one of the best players in the league long term and you stopped
us from yeah but you guys are only talking about the end of it i think the average person who's
gonna sit there and boo is thinking about the eight years before that of no playoff success
and him not showing up playoffs i think that's what they think about and that's why they want
to boo yeah not even like yeah you didn't wave or anything what about you didn't perform or win
anything for us and you left bye we're gonna boo you can i pre-defend leafs fans for this a little
bit uh i i just let me let me i think it's always the answer is yes yeah you say yes adam because i
have a point to make yes adam make you make your point okay thank you steve i appreciate you saying
that by the way you're welcome here's here's what i want to say the the leafs get a lot of shit and
the leafs players have given toronto a lot of shit for how they handle cheering right oh it's a quiet
building oh it's so quiet so quiet everybody walks in the the the you know media from outside
of town coming oh it's just it's a funeral home in there blah why Matthews why can't we get up for
Ryan Reeves's one fight this season right if the Leafs go at it similar to way that way the
Islanders fans handled Tavares right and Tavares left without a trade so that made things a little
bit harder but the Leaf fans if Leaf fans did that you can't then say that the place is a funeral
home adam yes you can because that's people talk out of both sides of their mouth all the time both
sides of your mouth and no one's ever going to feel bad for the leafs and no one's ever going
to feel bad for leaf fans and i think you just got to take it on the chin by the way i also think
leaf fans should make it hard on a former player coming back to toronto he's good that's the reason
he makes 12 million dollars that's the reason probably make life difficult for him you should
you should cheer on your own team and boo the other team i don't see that as being an issue
Now, I know this is going to become, you know, next Saturday, it's going to be a fucking moral crusade on on hockey Twitter.
Oh, it's going to be. But I think, you know what, man?
I'd like to see Leaf fans have a little bit a little bit more fire than what they've had and show people what usually happens outside of the arena,
where people who cannot afford it in the playoffs cheer and scream and stand out in the rain and the freezing cold in April for, you know, playoff games.
And we sat there at SportCheck overlooking those people every single night last year.
Whether it was an away game or a home game, they were lined up for hours and they're hanging out and they're losing their minds for this team.
I want to see that.
I want Toronto to be a hostile environment.
We went to Bell Center for my first wedding, for my first bachelor party.
And Montreal was terrible back then.
They were really bad.
Yes.
But they beat Detroit 10 to 2.
And you know what they did?
They smoked them.
they they fucking made life hell for the red wings they cheered the shit out of the canadians
they booed the shit out of the red wings there was no hey let's not pour it on no pour it on
man absolutely why are we not pouring it up pour it on yeah do you think that it was quiet in vegas
last night sure didn't sound that way to me no and they sure poured it on when vegas won as they
should as they million percent should so i feel like um this this the tut tutting that is about
to come i just needed to preempt that i think it's i think you let fans be fans and i want to see
more fire out of this fan base uh in a real loud way and i want you to i want toronto to be a
really fucking hard place to play in leaf fans let go of the idea that anyone will ever like you
like just just do you just do you fuck everyone else just do you adam you love the comparisons to
other sports and the fan bases the the one thing i think about when you're talking about hostile
environments is juan soto last year returning to yankee stadium you remember that video of him
standing out there and them in the bleachers all the yankees fans making it a hostile environment
for him and then all getting together pre-game planned as a fan base in that corner uh to boom
yeah and to have their chances to do everything and it was it was it was really contentious
between him and the fan that's why the yankees have such a hard problem recruiting players
you know really really hard time recruiting and i think that's what you're trying to see at a
Leafs fans yeah I want you to fucking hate coming to Toronto they're wearing the other team's jersey
like it doesn't have to be easy for them yes absolutely and I don't think you look at like
Philadelphia or Boston right you know they always tell you if you're wearing the opposing team's
jersey especially if you're a like if you're if you're the if you're a Kraken fan you're probably
okay but if I roll it in Philadelphia and I'm wearing a Penns jersey and I sit in that upper
level I am gonna have beer poured on my head now I'm not saying you should do that but like there's
you're going to the game wearing a hard hat because batteries hurt yes uh and then you look
at um uh boston's the same they like had we been in boston for that playoff game and that game had
been close would have been a very different circumstance i think boston fans don't f around
i've seen it's a hard place to play i've seen two games in boston um and i cannot imagine
going to a fan there and being like you're a little bit much huh
can you imagine boston fans yes i am hot bruins fans can you imagine they wouldn't even humor you
they tell you to fuck yourself which is what i would like leave fans to do a little bit more
often yeah i agree it's not friendly out here fuck him yeah fuck him and stop yeah you're right
try you don't need other fan bases to like you don't just be yourself and stop you don't need
to abuse people on social media that's one thing but you're trying to justify yourself with nuance
fuck you is an adequate response it is like that's enough yeah i got you well we actually
feel this way because fuck you how about that fuck you's fine okay sometimes life throws your
curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think
you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about
my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they
never clean my windows oh and their way around on that is like well it's a patio window you can do
that yourself and i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff
because you gotta have that scraper thing and the and the washer thing chemicals you gotta have the
See, that's what I'm saying.
That's why I used TaskRabbit, and I employed a tasker.

download that taskrabbit.ca code dangle now uh anything else on the leaf game that you guys want
to hit on um i mean we hit cow and we hit neil i think i think that whole 30 something minutes
nearly 40 minutes was the preamble to the most important part of the game uh the ot winner oh
oh my god that's the number one thing anybody's talking about post game to me on my time i hated
absolutely everything about it and i've gone from joseph wool mixing a save to joseph wool
you are alone that was a three on oh basically do one of you want to take us through the play
and then we need to talk about the play so matthews is cruising in cowan sets up a wide
open morgan riley what do you think about this uh he scored earlier in the game and made a couple
of excellent desperate defensive plays so i want to give morgan riley his flowers first
this is a hard angle it's on his wrong side he does there are so many missed nets last night
it's painful and morgan is chief among the guys that missed the net adam he moments this is not
the first time in ot this year he could have won a game and missed the fucking net if he tried to
skip a rock in lake ontario it would land in rochester bone dry holy shit this is what it's
the craziest cody cc miss of the season and even if he steve even if he hits the net and it's covered
then it's an offensive zone face-off right or or hit the net vegas takes it the other way and it's
two on two maybe turns into a three on two which is a lot better than what happened um so eason
cowan enters the zone sets up morgan riley morgan riley misses the net wildly take it over steve
so then matthews and eichel are tied up behind the vegas net hold on to that vegas takes it the
other way for a two-on-one now morgan riley against all odds actually makes up for his mistake
and swats the puck into the corner which at least prevents trouble for the moment mark stone gets it
back forget that jack eichel is completely look here here here hold it there hold it yeah yeah
you can see eichel at the center ice logo and matthews skates are barely visible at the top
of the screen he's at the vegas blue line hey is eichel fast at skating uh i know
matthews uh could have been closer than 20 25 feet away i know that was wicked fast yeah
and oh you know what he was late in his shift damn guess you should get the fuck off the ice
actually i i think you should get the hell off the ice if you can't skate this is hockey right
get off the ice did you want to do this part and then we get back to you say we're getting back to
that yeah sorry sorry so riley actually breaks this up with a stick yeah and very all the power
to him easton cowan is back helping out what i hate after this is now stone gets it he's able
to shovel it in front to eichel let's pretend eichel is not there the other guy who i think
is shea theodore i'm not totally sure is wide open because where did cowan go oh yeah so if
On the other angle from the other side,
you can see that Cowan goes in when he's going to make the play
and he kind of spins off.
He kind of over aggressively kind of spins into the corner.
Like on this play, Joseph Wool's jersey number
looks like what the score should be.
Yeah, when he's making this play, he kind of spins.
Oh my God, it's horrible.
Yeah, it's horrible.
So Morgan's on his stomach.
So Morgan was on his stomach and makes that play
and then he spins in the corner.
Cowan spins over the corner in the corner
and matthews is on the and then yeah now we probably get to i think the most important part
of this this whole sequence is the matthews part yeah eichel comes in and uh friggin tucks it and
puts us all out of our misery matthews is taking a breather look at him and even eichel like they're
both looking up at the scoreboard or i don't know what both of them are doing i think did they both
think it went out i don't know because like as much as matthews has stopped here eichel did too
but eichel picks up on the fact that oh nope hockey's still being played and he skates away
matthew's deep in his shift the shift is he started ot playing 40 seconds okay he goes off
really quickly he gets sent back out or he goes back out and he has this shift that ends total
a minute 16 and then this also comes on the back of he played the end of regulation uh double shift
as well that's that's too long of a shift in overtime especially this deep in overtime and
that's on you yeah so you can see here this whole sequence of eichel eventually sort of starts to
pick it up but as you've pointed out rightly when he's at center ice look how much he's already got
him beat by but eichel still wasn't skating fast that's the thing like eichel wasn't hustling down
the ice he was still taking his time and this sequence takes a while to play out it's about
10 seconds here from now till when he comes towards the front of the net and matthews is
just trailing the play taking his time to get up the ice like i'd love to know who was sitting on
the edge of the leaf bench going please let me out there oh my god let me out there if matthews
is trailing eichel maybe he gets a stick on him maybe he gets a little skin on him maybe he
catches him enough to take a penalty at least the game's not over right but even at center ice
eichel's still kind of gliding into the play and then austin finally realizes i have to do a little
bit of skating and then eventually he gives up when he realizes he's got him beaten by a line
oh that's not acceptable that's so friggin bad dude it's so bad for the captain for the defense
of he's out there tired you're saying that's a issue he should have solved earlier in the in
the play and that shouldn't have he should have went off or how do you solve that the overtime
is not a skills competition and everyone keeps calling that overtime is who can line change the
best that's all it and the Leafs are bad at it and if you are not on top of that you're dead
you're a dead person and a minute 16 unless you're hemmed there's no excuse for that whatsoever
and you can make the argument okay well matthews is hanging back in the chance that the leafs get
the pot and then he's got a breakaway for how long does he have a break yeah a breakaway where
he gets to center ice and then i go like catches him catches him by a line probably because he's
got nothing he shouldn't have been out there that long he should have subbed off when the puck was
coming back the other way maybe we rip on him for line changing in that situation i think a lot of
people probably do but realistically hindsight's 2020 he would have been better off getting off
i think i think the thing is too like listen you could say you could make the the the argument hey
he had no chance to to do it he set up morgan riley like they were thought that they were
going to win the game or thought they were going to get a face off or whatever if you're out there
your responsibility is to skate hard well and that's it it doesn't matter that it was 116 in
the shift it doesn't matter when he should have shifted off if you're out there you're pumping
you're pumping i don't care what it takes from you leave it all out there on the ice it's overtime
and you got a couple minutes left this isn't first also we're leaving out like part of the
argument for sub off is the unbelievable amount of cheating that goes on in overtime when it comes
to uh changing your shift guys are 20 feet from the bench when the guy they're coming on for oh
yeah yeah it's watch it really pay attention the next time and that's not just leaves that's
everybody that's everybody oh it's the leaves do it their opponents do it everyone friggin does it
um and you know vegas can complain about it but if it leads to you getting a little bit of skin
on eichel it's worth it and let the ref then call you for too many men when was the last time you
saw too many men called in overtime never never guys like anything but what they did you could
argue morgan riley did his job the best out of anyone on the ice which is which is like he made
a mistake he made up for the mistake he got help from neither of the other guys on the ice and
that's a problem it's it's what a mess i'm of the opinion that in that moment he should have had a
little bit more hustle he should add a little bit more giddy up regardless of how long that shift
is i think there was plenty of time to at least make him at least make an effort there that you
were trying to get back i thought the goal visualizer was good too at illustrating just
how slow Matthews was in reacting to Eichel going and scoring the goal you can see here there's the
nine of Eichel who starts to kind of speed up there and Austin just trailing the entire play
not making an effort at all and I don't think you should be doing that regardless of it's a minute
16 you should still at least show something in some effort I've seen guys out there for longer
in nhl games especially in those ot ones where guys are out for uh 20 minutes at a time like
20 minutes extra i should say the game goes on and it's like triple ot and we're like how do
they still have legs they're still skating and like even if it's a long shift you need just some
effort just show us that's what we're always asking at least can i'll show us some effort
and he didn't do that in that moment so i was disappointed i want to throw this at you too
when they start overtime sometimes they'll do um they'll have like tavaris win the face off and
McCabe will be out there in case he doesn't win the face-off
because they want a strong defensive player. McCabe slipped
a little bit, too. Yeah, but I mean, okay,
you're going to have bad games with guys. It's
fine, right? I don't think anybody
defensively walked away from last night going, I did a great
job. No. But I
what I find so
interesting is they have these sort of set things
that they start overtime with, and oftentimes
it starts with
hey, I've got a good face-off
winner, I've got a good defensive defenseman, and
I've got Austin Matthews out there, or Willie
if he's playing, right? One of the two.
And then when the Leafs get possession, if they get possession, okay, well, McCabe's
going to switch off for Riley now.
What are the numbers we see out there in that we see 34, we see 44, and we see 53?
In what world is Morgan Riley and a rookie winger out there at the same time?
In what world?
In what world?
I think if we're going to be honest, Morgan made the desperation play and he was able
to stop the first play Easton Cowan made a mistake by not going back to the front of the net and
covering a guy who who was essentially out of the play because he's in the corner but Easton Cowan
as hard as I was on him earlier in the show is a rookie and is prone to those mistakes because he
stepped out of the OHL and into the NHL and he's done a pretty damn good job at what like I'm sorry
you talk about sub off and bad changes and stuff like that uh coach Berube what are you doing
putting your worst defensive defenseman out there defensive defenseman worst worst defender who
who's happens to score a lot yeah i don't know and easton cowan who's a rookie i don't know
why robertson doesn't get more i don't get it i don't get why stetcher doesn't get more i'd love
to see nick wad mixed in there too i think he's been good and look at that look at this who scored
earlier in the game and scored goal number five who's been on a tear lotten i don't know why he
doesn't get more he can skate and can i make another suggestion uh matthews doesn't need a
face-off babysitter yeah what's up with that they're the top face-off team in the league
and they kicked vegas's ass except the last face-off true was in my ear because the leafs
were kicking their ass last night and there were so many icings in that game and i go it only takes
one matthews won like eight or nine straight or something like the most important face-off of the
game couldn't get it done he loses that one yeah but like that one i don't even put like on oh he
choked like you're not going to win every damn face off yeah he he almost did uh jesse disagrees
that's that's the leafs in a nutshell it is you're not wrong you described every portion of our
our disappointments with the leafs it's oh man you did so much good and you got there and then
the one moment we needed from you you couldn't get it done you lost the face off and that's the
game i would sacrifice every other face off if you just won that one because that means they would
have won the game and you know jesse doesn't that just follow the leafs brand of hey they were great
up until the moment they really needed to be great there is right there is something to be
say about something to be said about clutch and clutch has evaded toronto for a long long time
and and and again it's great that you won those ninth face-offs but as jesse says
if you don't win the 10th when it really matters then what what are we doing so listen i think i
come away from the game after a sleep like that i don't know how you guys feel i want to know what
you think i slept a-okay i slept good yeah i didn't lose the game i was pretty tired um i was
pooped uh but i i wake up this morning i go most that game was pretty good they clearly need help
on the back end can't defend we're shit um and you know what uh Marner gets his a win you know
comeback win in his his game that's very leaf for that to happen of course um it would not be this
podcast wouldn't exist if it wasn't the seventh layer of hell of embarrassment that we experience
every single season Peter Holland stuck it to the Leafs in his revenge game what what made you think
Marner wasn't gonna right right so hey David Compton score on Saturday that's right man David
comps yo numbers money on fire that's not going well that is not looking great um anyway so i feel
i still feel like listen you blew the game i feel shitty about it i'm pissed about it
i still think they're playing okay i still think they're playing well you you beat winnipeg you're
two one and one on this road trip which is a good outcome you got to be winnipeg you got to be
winnipeg though you lose to them not only is your record uh significantly worse but you lost to
winnipeg who pretty much everyone in the nhl has beaten recently so how do you guys feel about it
what's your your final takeaway before we move on it makes friday's game better okay jesse next
friday's next friday's game the mitch marner bowl part two yeah no i agree like the two one and one
isn't bad that's not a bad road trip at all like swap different games say they lose the colorado
game and like you win the utah game or something and like everything's fine like the at the end of
the day that record is decent so just go in winnipeg and i'll forgive you for everything
that happened last night you beat colorado that was unexpected you lost to utah the next night
that was pretty expected you choked against vegas that one hurts beat winnipeg and it i think it
fixes a lot of feelings you made you made good for a little bit of this yeah you got some tough
games coming up too so there's winnipeg uh that's on the road you get minnesota luckily it's at home
you have detroit luckily it's at home and detroit has kicked your ass this year
and then you head into the marner game you got to beat detroit five straight games at home
yeah it's not bad eh that's a oh and the funeral home man and dude like that's a sequence where
you got to get you got to get a couple of these after marner in vegas you get colorado and then
buffalo who's like just pissed and hot like this is a really important stretch of games here but i
want to see them like beat these good teams like that's the thing like okay it's tough competition
but eventually you have to beat the tough competition yep like i'm even looking at the
seattle game and i'm like god you better smack them even though they embarrassed you mason
marchman's not there anymore though yeah all right still gotta kick their ass i mean that's
the team that you know that game sort of set your season downhill yep the game where they beat you

on to rasmus anderson who is going to likely follow in so many people going back to the thomas
vanik trade in like 2015 which is we talk about it on the show and it immediately is the thing
that we talk about on the show is immediately announced after the show oh my god yeah he's
being traded at 501 today 100 do we know where the show's getting scheduled we don't know where
he's going but we know that it's some combo of there's going to be a first round pick okay and
There's going to be a almost ready prospect or a young roster player.
Basically, the equivalent of a couple of what we would call a couple of firsts.
So like the Brock Nelson deal.
Remember, that was Callum Ritchie in a first.
So we're looking at a team who is in a contention window, but they also have the assets.
Right.
Boston sticks out to me on that one.
Boston feels like a...
Boston?
I feel like...
I do feel like Boston's a sleeper on that one.
I'm just throwing that out there.
They are always active at the trade deadline.
when they're in it they're active they do i mean they have the guy to trade in fraser mitten uh i
mean he'd be a great fit you could yeah when i look at um when i look at rasmus anderson and
he's had a pretty good year despite calgary being pretty bad i am curious about one thing
with this trade and again it's supposed to happen in the next 48 hours things can always change but
this is what we're expecting um we don't know exactly to whom he's going to go he's been linked
to vegas many many many times i don't think it's going to be vegas but maybe they're a little low
on assets um but you know does what everyone expects does this trade include an extension
because the last time a deal was done between i'm going to use calgary and vegas as an example
they do business together hannifin was moved march 7th 2024 and when he was moved it was
without an extension he didn't sign till april 11th so calgary's been very weird in the past
always, actually, but very weird in the past about letting teams speak to the acquiring agent
about an extension. They're a really frustrating team to talk about. I'll just be honest.
So there's so much noise. Calgary feels to me like a team that could probably benefit from
letting the acquiring team at least try to sign Rasmus Anderson and getting more assets because
of it. If that deal is signed before the contract is or before the trade happens,
i feel like calgary could leverage more because i you know again any acquiring team with rasmus
anderson if you're giving up a first and then and then a first equivalent that's a lot and you're
gonna want some sort of hey he's gonna stay right i'd be curious about the ins and outs of the
hannifin deal because like maybe they had maybe they had some conversations and they decided they
were close enough right like we'll get it done down the line yeah sort of thing we don't we
don't need we don't need you we're vegas we don't need you to sign the contract because we know
you'll want to stay here when you're here right that's probably what they were banking on well
and you know all the more reason for you to link vegas and calgary because there's precedent here
yep for how they do business so it could be that i really do the the flames are so frustrating to
talk about just all the freaking noise out there um but this is going to set the market for the
trade deadline so it's uh it's an interesting deal i think they got miramanov in a first for
hannifin or something like it was not looking back i'm like got suspiciously little for him
um but it's a it's uh jesse when you when you look at this do you think that he signs an extension
immediately or do you think this is a guy that you know you just acquire him you get him at 50
retained and you figure it out later i think the market's gonna be real hot if he goes to
free agency nhl players generally are very boring yeah if i if i want to like make a bet on the odds
in what happens it's that he signs an extension with the team that acquires him and and then he
gets moved there and he's like oh everything's good i'm gonna be here for the rest of eight
years of my life and then i retire whatever but if rasmus if rasmus anderson is smart i think he
goes wherever he goes in this trade deadline and then he waits till free agency and it's like the
bell of the ball because i assume he's gonna go to a good team and i don't think you're too far
off with boston i think they should be high on the list on who could acquire him i it might be
boston it also might be detroit and if it's detroit and he goes there and has a good mini
playoff run and is in that market and then he goes to free agency and everybody's like hey
we can get rasmus anderson might cost us a lot i could see him making a ton of money so i i can
see it playing both ways if i'm him i'm going to free agency and chancing it for that giant payday
and the double digits because i'm a talented top four defenseman and i could have a good playoff
run with uh the the detroit redway the reason i bring up um the reason i bring up boston is
specifically hampus lindholm who played 17 games last year and has only played 34 this year and i
know he's a left shot guy and rasmus anderson is famously a right shot guy but that is you know
that mcavoy lindholm pairing when it happens is great and i wonder if boston is looking for
looking for at least a little bit more just talent right you know can you can you do like
I know Zdorov's uh uh playing on the second pairing can you do better than Henry Okiharu
next to him well yeah like uh the 2015 Blackhawks basically winning with like three defensemen like
that's the exception and yeah you're not gonna get a performance like that out of Duncan Keith
you need a ridiculous top four and that would definitely solidify things it takes a little bit
uh it takes weight off of both guys right like anderson's had some injury troubles mcavoy has
obviously had some injury troubles if you uh let them rely on each other um that helps florida
last year uh they go out and they get seth jones and some people were like yeah but you have ekblad
yeah but now you got both yeah yeah which especially both those guys are probably on
the back half of their career which you know mcavoy is probably prime anderson's maybe back
half it's a good setup jesse what are you looking at i was just looking at some of the contracts
there and on the different teams i was just looking at boston's lineup and yeah lynn holmes
on ir he's out but i'm looking at their cap space here they don't have a lot it's 1.7 million
dollars currently so if you sent a million the other way and calgary retains then you're fine
yeah and that's i think that's the benefit of rasmus anderson's contract right now and why that
why he's probably going to go for a lot like people are saying oh it's going for a first
round pick and a prospect and all this stuff but he makes so little money as a top four defenseman
somebody is going to pay a lot for him and boston has the assets two first round picks this year
two first round picks next year that's a lot of draft capital so give him two first round picks
for a team that looks like they might be back a little you know like who knows and uh they they
don't have a ton of cash space but because it's only 4.5 million dollars and calgary can just
like retain for three months they could easily do this deal and pay whatever they they need to
there's no way boston trades the leafs pick right no probably not that you gotta hold on to that
just for the sheer potential of it could be sixth overall for the for the hilarity of it you don't
move it yeah or seventh overall for the memes on if you get to draft oh my god you don't move it
forget business have we considered it's very funny yeah like you're boston you get a superstar with
the Leafs pick that is going to be history and something we're going to talk about for the next
10 years of this podcast you don't trade that pick and we know that from experience yeah Boston
continuing to own the Leafs in bad trade it's very highly likely they will continue to own the
Leafs yeah you don't move the pick um if I had a time machine I slapped the phone out of John
Ferguson Jr's hand another guy I'd like to I'd like to talk about is Artemi Panarin who I think
might be dealt sooner rather than later i don't know that for sure but his name sure seems like
it's out there and with shisterkin out for several weeks at least basically it seems like he might
not be back until the olympic break although you know we never know and and right now new york is
sitting at the bottom of the eastern conference having played more games than the blue jackets
and sense who are ahead of them directly and they're three points behind both teams this seems
like uh sell sell and they're just getting shaboinked yeah every game they are getting
shaboinked uh the no bs thing that the the rangers had going into this season oh there's so much bs
yikes there's a lot of bs i have i mean what did free say he said florida and washington
but another name that emerged potentially were was the minnesota wild and what's so interesting
is florida makes sense oh for panera russian guys love going there and also who wouldn't want to go
to a two-time stanley cup champion team three times in the finals in the last three years
washington is interesting because obviously you get to feed if you're panarin you get to feed ovi
um and it's a politically that's fascinating yeah and fantastic system yeah uh that that
carberry's got them playing but i really sort of like the minnesota wild thing because it seems
like they're doubling down on yeah our center depth isn't good but we'll get you other ways
i was thinking about that like what what could the wild even do up the middle like who's really
available you said cadre that was freaking that was sexy yeah but but is is like calgary seems to
be really set on keeping cadre and i don't i don't know why but i you know so instead of bringing in
a new center and reinventing the wheel and having them getting used to everything it's probably
easier to get a winger acclimated to everything and you just hope all your centers punch above
their weight a little bit eric's neck has been struggling with some injuries but he'll be he's
with he is traveling with them yeah and like yeah i think you have some guys who like can play wing
can play center like hartman well hartman's playing second line center right now right
oh man but it's a bit tough up the middle there but like you're so undeniable on the wings if you
get Panarin right and and if you do get Panarin so here's you've got uh he's a right winger right
no no he's a left winger that's why the Washington thing doesn't make sense to me because Ovechkin's
on the left and protest is on the left so oh yeah I don't know where Panarin would play you've got
he wouldn't be feeding Ovi Mojo uh behind Kaprizov because Kaprizov's a left winger right so Marcus
Johansson Marcus Foligno and Yakov Trenin I'm assuming some one of those guys would go back
the other way but um and marcus johansson's actually had a pretty good season i do think
it it would be fascinating to see a caprizov panarin one two on the left side like it would
be cool god danila yurov is your top yeah that's tough man they're still doing well they are but
like it's lacking okay and also like great hockey teams are built on the wing
well if they're gonna we've talked about uh the wild taking a big swing post quinn hughes trade
you're off i would assume is one of their top chips and they literally cannot afford to trade
it that's you're trading your top center um so them being involved in these discussions is
fascinating because i don't know how you do it when you go and you want to drink a glass of water
you have to have a cup
in your cupboard.
If you're Bill Guavin,
you can't just sell
all your dishes.
You need at least drink.
You really went out
of your way to get
David Juracek.
I kind of think
he's got to be involved.
He has to be.
The team with the second...
Sorry,
Seamist in second last
in goals four this season.
In goals four?
I'll give you the first one.
The team who is
like the worst
goal scoring team
in the league this year
is the St. Louis Blues,
which is really surprising.
considering Montgomery system and the players that he has.
But it seems like it's just not going well there.
Who's number two?
Because I can't believe this team's not being brought up more.
And I think it makes a lot of sense.
Are they in a playoff spot in and out?
Actually, in and out of a playoff.
And they can't score.
And they're in a weak division.
Does that help?
Well, it does.
Default can't score team that we always talk about on this podcast is the Kraken.
But I assume it's there.
They're going to go 10, but they're OK.
yeah because they are only five goals up on this team so they're not great i was gonna say they've
picked it up a little but i don't know how much is it the kings it's the kings oh there you go and
i wondered because the kraken for me i'm like i don't know what the fuck you guys are doing like
i i don't know like i despises the crowd no i don't i i like everything around the kraken yeah
but i just don't understand sometimes why they do it's like man let's get more gigantic towering
defensemen they just were slow and so you don't have the flash of vegas at all at all they run
the ship completely differently no shit yeah um but they they are jt miller they are doing better
lately like they're third in the division the pacific division stinks but they're in it yeah
take advantage they're getting goaltending and they look decent which is the thing they didn't
get from one of their goaltenders all last year that's then that's how they're built to win but
it's so they're winning games by the design that they laid out a place that russian guys apparently
like to go though is los angeles because hey remember kovalchuk when he came back that's who
signed with and and you know hey it's only the pacific ocean between you and home although
that's the biggest ocean in the wrong way and then you're on the other side of russia too
i think you're going the wrong way i'm talking borders here how about you're rich and it doesn't
matter yeah that's true i look at this and go you know the la kings do not allow a lot of goals
you know they have 122 goals for that's bad but they also don't allow a lot of goals 131 goals
against which is puts them top five in the league so are they going to try to replicate the jeff
carter trade from 2012 because they didn't really score and then he joined and i want to say they
were the second best offensive team panarin's a disher right and and so yeah he can score but
yeah and like it's right now it's jeff malott alex laferriere and adrian campe line one because
you've got uh perry out trevor moore out kopitar day-to-day armia's day-to-day but if you have
panarin kopitar kempe goodness that feels like goodness they're old but la is old they don't
play old uh kopitar maybe plays old kempe doesn't i mean kopitar is old kopitar is very old and a
good player and this is his last season i feel like for kopitar's last season at very least you
got to go out and get a stud and that's such a good point like yes you can't like imagine you
miss the playoffs this year and you didn't deal at the trade deadline on kopitar's last season
no you you gotta you gotta empty the cupboard on this one i wondered about that i think i think la
should be a sleeper in that i don't know whether they are or not ken holland likes to make big
swings um he doesn't give it he's a draft schmaff kind of gm too doesn't give a shit uh hey you
could always get older on d do the rangers have any like just ancient defensemen who can't skate
back there you want to get older than give him the ken then dowdy edmondson cc dumoulin you could
yeah you could probably do that i mean mikey anderson and drew dowdy i'd make joel edmondson
play with a weighted vest just really lean into the bit i think i think la should be in there
they should be in there they that nothing against jeff malott but i do think and warren fogel kevin
fiala's on that team on the left side would be pretty that would give you a really good opportunity
and pinard's pretty good in the playoffs right uh depends who you ask okay well it doesn't matter
they're gonna be firsted out anyway if you ask rangers fans it's it's uh they look at it a lot
like leaf fans do except they have actually been to the final four a couple times you know for a
lot of the winter it can be dark and cold and it's dark and cold and we had like a bunch of snow
yesterday and for a lot of people that can be kind of depressing and the day before uh but but um

quickly we got the link in the description check out a pic uh jesse and steve tage thompson had
five points last night the buffalo sabers continue to just torch the nhl i think they've claimed
is it 26 of 28 points since uh since this winning streak started and here's what i want to ask you
does this help or hurt kevin adams because okay if i'm cope i would tell you that the winning
streak had already started before he was fired yes and the team has not made a trade or really
made any significant change since he was fired that's an internal workings thing like a gm we've
we've always heard that a gm is judged by how the team does after they're gone
and if that rule applies to kevin adams he should be getting another job
but same reaction jesse but but still but yeah we had this is one of the funniest streaks
i think since we started this show absolutely it's better than that 13 and that was funny
that was you can look at it and it's like they lost they had a trip canceled it galvanized the
team and they went and they just went on this crazy streak this one is so much less explainable
it started with the gm who we the hockey world unanimously was like this guy's terrible at his
job he gets fired two or three games into a winning streak yeah and he maybe lasted a couple
days longer because yarmo was in finland dealing with the death of someone in this family that's
right but it did start earlier that week apparently before the decision had fully been finally been
made and you're telling me the players don't know players no december 9th is when the winning
streak started and he was fired on the 15th that's it hey six he also built he also built
this team they're 12 and 2 without kevin adams so since december 15 that's crazy he got them
josh stone you go back to the winning streak on december 9th and they're 15 and 2 so brother i
i think it does not speak to kevin adams's job and when he's done i think just like in nashville
where good vibes in the air and the ether is what propelled them into their winning streak
i think not having kevin adams has freed up the players on the ice when was the last time you
associated buffalo with good vibes like in the long time all he brought was palm trees and bad
vibes man that's all kevin adams did actually didn't bring sorry it's pam trees yeah he didn't
bring them because they don't have any in buffalo i don't know i think like sometimes we see these
weird things with hockey players where hey we get a little motivation from just the organization
being a little stable and everybody's playing better like i think happiness in a locker room
breeds success on the ice when you have good players and they we've always thought that
buffalo had the pieces they had talent we've always just been shocked that they've never put
it together and whatever it is right now i'm not willing to give kevin adams any credit and i think
it's the players here who are now happy with their situation and they're willing to compete for
everybody in this organization so uh more power to buffalo like i hope they they keep this playoff
spot that they're in right now it's an impressive run but i don't i'm not willing to give a whole
bunch of credit to kevin adams on this they're like surprisingly deep too you know how many
players have 20 points or more how many freaking 10 nice that's a lot and josh norris would be one
of those players he's he's playing at almost a point per game clip 17 points in 19 games the
19 games is the problem michael castler rings only played 16 as well that sucks that sucks but
josh doan quote unquote the throw-in has been outstanding and the uh the the like i've never
can i just be honest i've never seen a gm it does speak to like hey we didn't like this guy i've
never seen a gm so universally disliked by a team coaches you see it all the time i think they
genuinely didn't like that guy what let me ask what else are we supposed to take from this
information that right like nobody's gonna step up and defend it is hockey just genuinely this
random or i think human beings are this random like with the leafs for example it's very difficult
to ignore awful thing happens immediately not awful eight oh and two immediately that's difficult
to ignore same with the sabers man how what am i supposed to take from the sabers are awful for
god knows how many years kevin adams is fired nothing changes not a thing and they're great
immediately it's even less explainable than the leafs uh with savard that's because he's not in
the room right but like how often is your gm in the room that's what i'm saying yeah oh roll i
understand i understand that's what i'm saying like this is a guy that like i don't know if
it's contract negotiations i don't know if they didn't respect his knowledge i mean he did kind
of come out of like building a youth program for the sabers to being their general manager a bit
of a jump i don't know what it was but you're right and i think there is like if you've ever
had a bad boss and that bad boss gets fired and you like the job but the bad boss is making the
job bad oh yeah there is a bump yes 100 i think i think it's real and like the josh norris trade i
think is a perfect example of like hey kevin adams made a horrific trade here and he should have
never acquired that player and josh norris like there's no update uh on the injury from when he
left the philly game was on night ago but they're saying respectfully it's a rib injury that's
flaring up again and he could miss more time he's played so little for the sabers yeah obviously
that's kevin adams's decision making i don't feel bad for the sabers or kevin adams at all
no i feel bad for josh norris yes this was always the risk with josh norris and oh lo and behold
here it is so i don't have any sympathy and you traded away a good player you didn't have to
you just held on what you had and to a divisional rival and you thanks a lot by the way you also
send assets there to do this deal like it's stupid like it's not a justifiable it's horrific and
that's why he got fired regardless of if this season goes well or not those things there's so
many of those touch points along the way of kevin adams's tenure that he deserved to get fired
regardless of if they're on this win streak or not i saw sense fans and sabers fans going back
and forth and someone was like oh josh norris had this and this and this today and uh the sense fan
just goes dylan cousins completed the game it's a good end yeah man it's uh that's a tough deal
and look at the sabers regardless yeah yeah they lost dylan cousins for a player who doesn't play
i also think and are doing great i think they're 13 and 6 with norris in the lineup too so when
he does play he's very very impactful that's great 13 and 6 yeah i know brother i know i know um
sister i want to talk to you about the senators actually it's interesting that they were going
back and forth with sabers fans uh it's been a tough year for the sands can't get a save lenis
soul mark back in practice today great news he's not talking uh we already asked julian hey what's
it do you think he's going to talk and julian's like we asked and no uh i don't expect him to i
don't until he's activated i actually i expect him to give a full interview to pierre lebrun and
pierre lebrun only like steve steos did uh i'm sure man if i was local media there i'd be fucking
furious about that after that statement but but i digress what i want to talk about is i told you
the rangers at 48 games have 46 points not great uh the senators at uh let me just look it up here
to make sure i got it right right currently 46 games have 49 points okay also not great
can't get a save i think the team's probably better uh if they get just an average goalie
right we'll see what james reimer is able to bring we'll see when lena's comes back whatever
it is reimer carrying them to the playoffs is easily the funniest token i think no matter what
happens the senators have got to buy here because this is the first i i believe this is this not the
year that they forfeit their first round pick from the dodonoff it is they do not have a first round
if they finish low like what they are now they're going to be in the mix for the first overall pick
that they forfeit well they they they like can't can't be like they're what they won't even be in
the ball so correct me if i'm wrong in theory the senators could win the draft lottery no well
they just won't they wouldn't be in the draft lottery they wouldn't put their ball in there
they are forfeiting this year's because so it'll be 31 picks in the first round the last year they
can forfeit right so this one's gone yeah the first round this year will be so the first round
has 31 picks exactly that is how this year but they might have picked 32 which is in the second
round this year bizarre uh i listen to me go and go and go and buy going by almost slightly
elevate the value of first round picks in this draft like apart from there's some pretty good
players available but like oh man like but we're only going to be trading for the 14th or 13th
now we're only going to be trading for the 10th well knife now we're whoa
i don't know it's a little it's a little you can't we're splitting hairs here yeah jesse you
cannot tell me kyle dubas hasn't had a half hour conversation about this very subject oh my god
kyle dubas is sitting in his office ectoplasming over the one the one pick he's moving up like
that's that's true guys guys guys we have to find a way to acquire a first so we can trade back for
two seconds we have to find a way are one thirty second more valuable than they were and we gotta
do it technically the thirty second pick this year the first pick of the second round this year
will be a first round pick because hilarious also adam how dare you say one thirty second
if i have an opportunity to move up three point one two five percent in value i'm gonna do it
all right yeah now i i so i'm curious about what the sense do they are apparently sense fans really
want to get rasmus anderson i think anybody does sense could do it could actually do it
yes um and that would make again i keep thinking that makes a lot of sense for them it makes
extra sense regardless of how their season goes if you extend him right yeah if it's a rental
obviously it makes no sense no sense yep uh let me uh i got breaking news uh as that was that
it on the sense it was because this is this is big but you have more in the sense you would like
are you sure it's january the 16th at 1 30 this afternoon we got an official statement from the
new york rangers oh like on twitter unless you got more sense you want to hit what's the statement
i'm going to read it out because i haven't read it fully but this is from a message from chris
drury to our fans oh after the fire jury chance we wanted to make a take a moment to connect with
our loyal and passionate fan base. We know and feel your disappointment with how the season has
gone to this point. We are just as frustrated and want nothing more than to deliver an on ice
product you can be proud of. It's what drives us every day. No one in the organization is happy
with what has transpired from management to coaches to players. Over the last few years,
we have some successes and moments to cherish, but ultimately it was not our end goal. We are
working relentlessly every day to bring a Stanley Cup back to New York because that's what the fans
deserve with our position in the standings and injuries to keep players this season we must be
honest and realistic about our situation we are not going to stand pat a shift will give us the
ability to be smart and opportunistic as we retool the team oh baby this will not be a rebuild this
will be a retool build around our core players and prospects we will target players that bring
tenacity speed skill and a winning credit pedigree with a focus on obtaining young players draft
picks cap space and allow us flexibility moving forward that means saying goodbye to players that
have brought us uh and our fans great moments over the years is this statement from like a year ago
this is from right now they've been doing that these players have represented the rangers with
pride and class and will always be a part of the family we as we start on this new strategic plan
we will continue to play hard with pride and passion for our fans we appreciate your unwavering
support for the rangers uh more than we can describe and thank you so much for all you do
for our organization you will begin to see some of our plans coming to light in the weeks and
months that follow lgr as in let's go rangers that's from chris drury president and gm guys
that's the first sorry that's the second team that has officially waved the white flag publicly
and said this season's over for us it's especially interesting because outside of panarin
there's not a lot of guys on expiring deals definitely not a lot of guys that excite me
in the least so you're looking at significant changes that could have impact down the line
yep wow I'm wondering who that means I'm looking at the roster trying to figure out who the hell
it means like Sam Carrick is having like a renaissance in his career and like every time
I see that he's still in the NHL I'm so proud of him I'm like man you made your debut in the
dark dungeon days of uh the leafs and the fact that you were also in the dark dungeon days of
the anaheim ducks and now you're in the dark huh now that i'm thinking about it sam carrick has
played for a lot of really shitty teams um but what the rangers described they want they would
be trading away if they got rid of him but like we're really digging deep here if we're having
like an extended conversation about sam carrick the only two players that make any sort of impact
are carson susie and or timmy panarin beyond that you're looking at guys with at least a year left
you're looking at will cooley i don't think that makes any sense they're probably not trading
borgen because they just got him and signed him like taylor radish that makes some sense
i like so here's here's what's the big let me start let me start with this jesse steve name
the rangers core because i don't know what it is what is the rangers core uh panarin who's about
to go so he's not core then who's the core right now not who it's been who is it today adam fox
i mean yeah he's a starting goalie is vinny trocek yes jt miller um is is lafreniere
mika's a bandage ad lafreniere is a random man um i'm so disappointed in him um man i after that uh
run i want to say it was in 22 22 or 23 i thought the sky was the limit for him and he's a random
man um it's not a large core well but you're you're talking about z bad and trochek i look at
they've tried to trade zabinijad they don't see him as part of the core
no trochek's really good like i think people are underrating him yeah people are saying he
shouldn't be like he's he's good that's a really good player JT Miller I think has been a complete
disappointment do you keep JT Miller if you're them he plays with okay uh he's JT Miller is
Schrodinger's JT Miller okay what does that mean he is the fastest player on the ice he is the most
tenacious player on the ice he is the biggest prick on the ice he is the laziest player on
the ice he is the least dependable player on the ice he is the least noticeable player on the ice
unless you're noticing him for the bad reasons he is your mvp he is the reason you lost that is jt
miller yep in a nutshell yep he can score you 90 points he can cost you 140 yep he is the best
player you've ever seen he is the most disgraceful display of professional sports you've ever put
eyes on uh he should wear a shirt that says exclusively bs exclusively nothing but bs that's
been his entire career he is the most shocking player on the ice every night it just depends
which kind um he's james dolan yeah he can skate um except he has more redeeming features than
james dolan which is doesn't say much about either man yep um i wouldn't want him on my team i don't
want him to be the captain of my team i think that's insane i thought it was a good fit in terms
of what they want he's not going they're not training him no way i think they love him and
that's why they got him but uh i'd love him to uh he's not going to because he's he's
stubborn as a an ox um but he needs to reevaluate the way he plays hockey just because it's not
every night your thoughts on on the rangers core and who might get dealt yeah so the statement
itself it's great news if you're a rangers fan i think this has been a long time coming this is
begun in july of 24 when they started to make moves and you go to chuba you try to make that
trade and since then it has been a disaster on all fronts and it's a shame that it's taken
in what is this 18 months 20 months to admit that this is who the team is and who they have been for
the last year but we finally reached the point where they're not looking to acquire keifer
sherwood and build on top of this team and they've been making so many deals to hold on to what they
were at the end of the 24 season uh in moving guys out and acquiring miller that they've really
destroyed the team from the inside out and now we've reached a point where jury who even though
I don't believe he should be the guy to make the moves and retool the franchise is going to be that
guy because James Dolan trusts him. But at least they have reached the conclusion that a lot of
fans have realized for a long time now. So this is, I think, good news today that he's saying that
we are going to make these moves. That starts with Artemi Panarin, which who they haven't
approached yet to move his no move clause. That's a thing that they haven't done by all reports as
of yesterday when that reporting was done. Maybe this letter is the first step in approaching him
to tell him hey we are going to move you look what we're the direction of the franchise where do you
want to go he has full control so that's going to make the deal a little harder because he's going
to say i want to go here or i'm going to give you a list of teams and then you can only work in those
confines so that kind of sucks but that's the first step the jt miller stuff as you're talking
about has been a disaster that was a move you shouldn't have made he shouldn't be the captain
shouldn't have been made captain he's been a disaster he was not there for a couple games
and he's come back and he hasn't looked at even remotely better um that's been a disaster and you
asked about like the core of this team the core is i'm looking at like a guy like gabe perot who
was decent young guy 20 what is he 23 20 right now um that's the future your franchise that 20
years old um that's the future your franchise noah labba that's the future your franchise it's not
about the core of the Trojans and the Zabinijads of the world. It's now time to move completely
past that era of New York Rangers hockey. That's what I would like to see out of this team. Like
it's get rid of that everybody from that era that we just had, because that thing came to an end in
a disastrous way last season. And now this season just been more of that. You're obviously going to
keep Sir Sterk and he's your goaltender, but it's you're now got Fox, you've got Lava, you've got
perot and chris jury has been so damn bad at drafting that there's not many other people
you can point to um so it's now keep a braden schneider yes i would keep a braden schneider
but it's it's now you got to restock and get more guys like that yeah you need a completely
new organizational depth because they have none right now go get some by trading away all these
guys from that last era rangers off alex lafreniere by the way is in year one of a seven-year deal he
has 26 points and 10 goals in 48 and he's gonna be there i'm gonna be there for the loser i wonder
about lafreniere because 7.45 million dollars is a lot yeah it's a lot and if the rangers were
gonna move that deal they have to do it in the next couple of years before his partial no trade
kicks in but do you not think a team like i don't know carolina right who are tiny who's the who's
this underperforming guy he's got potential in it ah carolina no well i i what i think carolina
believes and they're probably right is that they have an edge on people in terms of general manager
intelligence that management group's not stupid and i do think like if they were in on petterson
and have still sort of been checking in on Pedersen.
And I'm like, man, Pedersen's not been that great.
But they believe, hey, if we get him in our system,
because he's strong defensively, we can fix this, man.
We can rebuild him.
You know why I'm smiling at him?
Why?
Because I was trying to make the money work.
I was like, okay, big money problem player for big money problem player.
Oh, Elias Pedersen can make some –
Oh, no, I don't think he's going to the Rangers, actually.
Yeah, no, I mean Carolina.
uh yeah would would carolina not look at a guy like that and go oh that's that could be valuable
a vinnie vinnie trocek reunion in carolina you don't need like lafreniere isn't the move i'm
looking at to do right now no that's something like he's sticking around he's here he makes a
lot of money and who in this league is looking at that and saying we want to buy him right now
and you're going to get value for that like that's somebody i'm sticking around if you're
going to retool here he's going to be a part of the losing okay like four years left gms around
league are in a value of uh vinnie trochek yeah oh yeah i love him like that's the tree i think
we should be barking up like the the big names the guy who have pedigree in this league you can
get assets for them and trochek is at a really respectable cap hit too like what is it 65 oh
it's 5.6 5.6 oh my god yes if you can get zabin ajad to wave like that's everybody's gonna be
happy to take on me because you know where trocek would make a ton of sense give me minnesota
there you go and the connection to bill garren because the team you absolutely now we're cooking
with gas yeah and who leads the league and hits a guy that we actually brought up when we were
talking about minnesota and what's the trade uh no it's yakov trennan oh he passed him does he
really yeah sherwood's number two oh there you go um so like i'm just going by the first thing i did
the reason i know trennan leads the league by the way is i read that statement and the first thing
i'm like you know what i'm just gonna be dumb and who leads the league and hits they're gonna
they're gonna go out and try to get that guy well trennan is a fourth liner on minnesota right now
and that actually kind of makes sense would you say it's trennan in that direction
right still got it uh will cooley is third he's on the rangers uh you don't have to acquire him
he's yours um hey you know i'm just i'm trying to find guys on contending teams who um the
contending team could afford to lose and trennan is like you said trennan in that direction if
you're the new york rangers obviously adam fox is injured right now he's on long term
but the guy they signed this season to help them get over the hump to the
stanley cup finals is vlad gabrikov now he signed a deal it's a no move but he's 30
a guy like that becomes available that's a big haul and i know they said retool okay so this
isn't a full strip it back sabers ducks sharks type of rebuild and i get why they don't want
to do that the last time they the rangers retooled uh it propelled them to two straight conference
finals i'm pretty sure like it was only a few years ago pretty good they did a great job panarin
became available built the team it was good gavrikov to me is interesting he probably doesn't
want to leave new york but if he did i don't think he would fit the window of two to three years from
now because i think his best years are the next probably two to three years if you're him well i
know you got you want to go through a rebuild you got a pretty good contract out of new york but
i mean you got to be looking at the situation around you and going whoops
you could oh my god you could flee someone for davikov are you kidding
it's good looking adam i don't know there's there's some pieces here and they could turn
this around the other place i think they need some help they got to figure out what they're
gonna do i don't know if spencer martin at 30 years old is the guy i don't know if they signed
him this year i know jonathan quick at 39 still playing well they're gonna need who's the next
guy up like they give shisterkin some help shisterkin's 30 he's not gonna be able to play
60 games a year you need a you need a 35 game goaltender who's that gonna be and is it is it
somebody that comes within your system is it somebody that comes in a trade is it somebody
you draft you you're gonna need quick can't do this forever although he's been great since being
there that's one of the easier problems to solve for them yeah it comes around to like when you
plan on contending again go out and get a backup goaltender like eventually you got to get it but
that's one of the easier problems i think right because you got your starter and you got to find
the next guy it benefits you to lose games right now and the easiest way to do that is to holy
shit take out your goaltend he playing quick he's 310 and two oh i know he was better than that no
he's been oh he's had a tough uh yeah last two seasons he's been good the team in front of him
hasn't been good but he also hasn't been good so it's a combination of everything i could see him
going somewhere and you know at the end of the day the name brand of jonathan quick is still
strong and and don't forget uh i want to say he was with no he got traded to the blue jackets
i don't even know if he played for them and then he went to vegas and we're like
what's he really gonna do for the vegas freaking golden knights and then he went off yeah he was
great that was 901 save percentage and then a 911 the next year with the rangers right and that was
pretty recent memory 27 games too not not a small sample 39 year old goalie has bad time on bad team
like i'm not shocked you send him to a contender can he be literally your third stringer he was
flipped one day later to the blue to the golden knights and i only know that because the blue
jackets made like a memorial post yes like thank you johnny yeah 24 hours as a blue jacket very
funny a couple of other things that i quickly wanted to hit on itv4 in the uk has picked up
the nhl rights itv is a big brand in the uk and starting today you'll be able to watch the wild
and sabers for free if you have a i guess for free it's a cable pack but we're starting to see
actual nhl games in the uk which is interesting nice also interesting is the eihl which is the
british league not televised so you have to think that's not great but i think the nhl is like i
don't care about those guys uh so the nhl has a home in the uk rising tide floats all boats
absolutely um the last thing i want to touch touch on is not hockey related um in the last 24 hours
uh we've seen kyle tucker signed for 60 million dollars a season uh with the la dodgers we saw
bichette signed today for roughly 40 million a season i don't know with the mets i i don't know
how i tell my son because he loves bichette he's he loved bo bichette like probably before he loved
any leaf well you need to tape the reaction and play it as a wedding that's what you need oh my
those are the best but his bear is called his teddy bear is called bobo i wanted to ask jesse
our world series uh streamer extraordinaire while the entire playoffs it was such a grind
are the jays better worse or the same going into this season if the offseason ended today
i think they are better than where they left boba shett they they're really gonna miss them
because of the bat like the bat's incredible but i'm not too worried about the the jays lineup
next year you're not a no so if they did nothing else you'd be okay with it yeah i think they can
compete again for the world series okay is there what is it that that's giving you because there's
a lot of question marks the akamoto from you know japan as good as he is you don't know how that's
going to translate in north america they have analytics but until the rubber hits the road
right you you're not really sure ernie clement's going to play full-time him and s is going to be
the the shortstop i would assume so akimoto at third i would think yes are you counting on
a guy like addison barger to take another step yeah santander coming back and that's going to
be a good bat plus i think they've figured out their pitching and it's going to be a lot more
stable than it was last year you gotta remember like last year the blue jays were a disaster for
a couple months there to begin the season and then they went on a magical run through
midway through the playoffs like they are a lot more stable as an organization and the guys they
have and i'm pretty confident that they can build on everything that they had last year they will
miss bow but i think they'll be all right do you think do you believe all the catastrophizing that
uh the kyle tucker contract will finally be the nail in the coffin and there will be a strike
lockout next season after next season baseball to me is in too good of a place to go into a
lockout like it would destroy them if they burned all of this momentum that they've been building
because people i think are into baseball like they haven't been in decades and i would it would
be a real shame if they had a strike or lockout at the end of next season so i think they will
try their best to avoid it the craziest stat i saw yesterday uh drew told me it because tucker
that actually broke during the stream yesterday um uh i believe it's otani and tucker make more
than the minnesota twins entire 26 man roster and um you can't operate a lead like a league
like that like that's disgraceful but who's more disgraceful the dodgers who are just
spending like an entire country's gdp on a baseball roster or trying to win winners trying
to get even better or the twins who are just no obviously the pirates not trying the pirates the
marlins i mean the twins are in there but like here's what bothers me about the salary cap
conversation first off there is one it's just a it's a luxury tax right second is the pirates
owner basically said i'm not gonna spend until there's a salary cap this guy's a billionaire
what the fuck you talking about it's a joke it's an absolute what's happened in pittsburgh
specifically this is the franchise of roberto clemente bothers me because this is like a town
that loved that team and this guy's just a fucking idiot and when uh when your own commissioner gets
on television and says yeah we got to fix the pirate situation you know it's bad that's his
boss did he say we got to fix the dodgers no no because the dodgers are working actually a-okay
because the dodgers generate a lot of money too for the league and they've won there should instead
of a cap i think what baseball needs is a fucking minimum spend you want to play poker at this table
here's your buy-in that's what's bullshit about what's happening here i don't have a problem with
that at all it's at the end of the day uh i'm i think we're all sick of billionaires being cheap
yeah let's just i'm gonna buy this team and then and then fuck the whole city get off your wallet
you dork like i'm i'm actually like yeah the dodgers are spending and they ought to so i'm
i'm i don't know how to there's no redeeming quality in a in a billionaire that won't spend
money nope exactly why do you own the team then just buy tickets to the game you're dork this is
a thing that a lot of people won't agree with but for the popularity of this sport which i like
seeing it grow it's good to have goliath yeah good to have the big bad monsters the dodgers being the
easy thing you could point at and be like look at the evil empire spending a lot of money and
winning a bunch of championships is good for the popularity of the sport there's there's no greater
illustration of that than um heading into the 2019 nba final they showed who was cheering for who
and they showed a map of north america and it was like california is cheering for the golden state
warriors and it was only a chunk of california the entire rest of north america was going for
the raptors and that's because the warriors are the monsters yeah right and they took advantage
of a weird cap situation too right oh yeah like they won yeah the the cap went up and they signed
durand and then they they won a bunch of championships and for the sake of like when
you when you win a championship it means more when you knock off the big bad team that's supposed to
be the one winning the championship it actually sweetens the victory even more that you can knock
off the Warriors or knock off the Dodgers and like the the 2016 finals where LeBron beats the
greatest regular season team of all time and that year's Golden State Warriors that's probably
the number one championship that's been won in the last 20 years the NBA because of what he did
overcoming the odds there and that's only possible if Golden State's so good and that wasn't like
one of the Durant teams where they bought it but it's still like that was the ultimate team and
if the Blue Jays were able to knock off the Dodgers
or if next season somebody beats the Dodgers
and they win the World Series,
it's going to mean even more
because you beat the team that spends without any limit.
And the team that spent the second most money last year
didn't make the playoffs.
That's the New York Mets.
Yeah, the Mets and them not making the playoffs.
What a great story that was.
What do you miss out on the playoffs?
That's fucking embarrassing.
And they just picked up a guy
who's going to play third base for them.
Bichette's going to play third base.
Who's one of the worst infield infielders
with a big bat in the league and they're already bad at defense uh and they had their own home
growing guy pete alonzo straight up reject them like it's not been a great off season for them
that's gonna save them but it's it's like this is a i think the idea that you spend and you win
is bullshit it's it's it's you know some teams spend intelligently and spend a lot the dodgers
some teams spend a lot the mets yeah i as a jays fan or as a any baseball fan who's not a fan of
the dodgers hate this but uh like what should they not be allowed and also like we have a sports show
that we've been doing for over a decade and over that over a decade we've talked a lot about
different dynasties um from different sports and never once has the has the conversation gone to
was that bad for the sport exactly were the 80s oilers bad for hockey i don't know let's talk
about it let's have that conversation yeah dynasties actually drive interest in the sports
well it's hilarious because like detroit when they were winning all their championships pre
lockout was that bad for the nhl they had the highest or the second highest payroll every year
so that's when shanee was like you know we all accepted less to play in detroit no you
fucking didn't shut up no you didn't anyway the nfl went from the patriots dynasty to the chiefs
dynasty and all they've done is print money yeah no yeah the new england patriots bad for football
yeah very good for football and by the way they won't let tom brady near tv that now that's a
situation where there's a salary cap in in the nfl and they did it by playing the same rules as
everybody else so it's a little jesse a little different but there was some sort of thing and
i don't understand the nfl salary cap so help me out with this one they talked about how they tried
to extend the brady window and the reason they were so bad after he left was because they had
so many cap penalties yeah you can defer money uh well you can renegotiate a contract to push
the money that's due to the following season so that's what they would consistently do so
if tom brady makes 15 million or whatever 20 million this season they can renegotiate his
contract so then that cap hit will go on to next year's deal instead of this year so that they can
spend more money this year and they would continually do that and just kick the can down
the road the rams did it for their super bowl victory and then like the following year it just
came back because they had to pay all that money and they're like okay this is the year we'll
accept all of that money in and they were screwed for like a year there but then eventually you get
out of it but who cares you win exactly but sometimes sometimes you don't win you know and
that's the risk you take i love that yeah we need that yeah so that i'm down with a hard cap we're
in a hard cap world in the nhl there should be a little more of that yeah but the nfl then you'll
be like that's non-guaranteed contracts right guys get screwed all the time and it's a short
career there and your money's not even guaranteed and that's real evil for the sport you're playing
right i i sorry what i mean is um i don't mean non-guaranteed um but the ability to go back
with a player and say like okay let's say it's um uh who's a let's say it's elias petterson okay
and hey we're vancouver and we're actually good now and i need five i need to bring in a five
million dollar winger i call elias petterson look listen dude a couple years from now we're
going to pay you this five million but this is the chance to go for it now so can we just move
that money to two years from now that would be cool if they'd be able to do that you know to a
certain percentage i know it'll never happen in the betman era never but wouldn't that be sick
it'll never make the trade deadline so much better it'll never happen in any year in the nhl no shot
oh makes me mad okay we'll leave it there uh by the way thanks to everybody who came and saw us
in peterborough and uh steve is going to do the stream with the winnipeg jets tomorrow night uh
And we will be back on Monday.
Is there anything else that I'm missing
that we need to announce?
Anything?
