Starting point is 00:00:00 Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer. That's why every step and dollar raised matters. On September 19th, join thousands in Toronto for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation Walk. Challenge yourself, friends, and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research. Together, we can carry the fire
Starting point is 00:00:22 and help create a world free from the fear of cancer. Register today at pmcfwalk.ca. Don't you wish you could just hit skip on the worst parts of your life? You know, the same way you can skip an ad? I get it. I'm Siyaya and I live in Ice Cove. I've made some questionable decisions that didn't end up the way I planned. And today I'm still figuring it out.
Starting point is 00:00:47 Somehow things usually get worse before they get better. Apparently, that's how I roll. So bundle up and come along for the bumpy ride. Don't miss the new season of North of North starting September 8th on CBC Gem. hello everybody sorry about the voice hey you sound like shit i know i know it's worse it's it sounds a lot worse than it is now unless i talk the worse it gets so the more i talk the more warmed up i get in it and it starts to sound like me a little bit again so that's why i'm doing oh man what if you stop what if i stopped i know it does bother
Starting point is 00:01:31 i know it bothers people like you know um there's certain things like chewing and that sort of thing every time i do one of these like i get messages like do you can you just not take the day off i don't want to hear that i'm like man man i'm doing my best here okay so there's some people who wish we'd take every day off yeah ever come back so don't listen to those people and they commented on all 32 and yet there you are every single time i see you steve you always give adam advice on like how to tame his voice and everything and adam's always just like ah i'll figure it out man oh i i uh cigarettes will give you cancer i'm married adam i'm married adam uh hey uh you know how you can improve this situation as if you're ignoring me
Starting point is 00:02:14 okay that's fine but adam moving it over to the the person who won't listen steve's advice is always like the grandma advice yes yeah it'll be like hey grandma's right but no but to be fair yeah grandma is often right but unless you ask her who she's voting for don't ask grandma sometimes with steve's advice he's usually like get some tea throw some frog legs in it boil it for half an hour exactly and then gargle it while you're standing on top of your head like you'll give advice like that stuff so i understand why you don't want to do it steve's advice is like what Werther's original tastes like yes delicious to your credit to your credit those things usually work yeah yes they do yeah and now you made it through your audiobook recording this summer
Starting point is 00:02:59 with COVID and you were probably COVID probably and you were a lot like I was so you know what you suggested before the show was heat up a bunch of water and put and this is where I was like it was I love you but I don't think I could have done this like I don't think I could drink this shit but you said put one of your i have a strepsil in right now yeah like a lozenger and then you put that in the thing and you microwave it he said to make a microwave no you said make a tea lozens yeah i said let it like boil a halls and like drink it yeah but also have tea like so have like a lemon ginger tea or something or a chamomile tea and you put like a honey based lozenge so it doesn't taste friggin disgusting right and it melts and then you drink it and it makes you feel
Starting point is 00:03:46 better i didn't get this far into the explanation before they decided it was a stupid no but adam's not the type of person to drink a tea lozenge or take my advice and also to take anything yeah on anything so you should probably know that and not waste your breath no i appreciate it because it's steve showing he cares whether or not i do it he needs to tell me because he's like i you're my friend and i love you and i need you to know and i love that about you i'm sorry for offending you with my friendship that's the two of you have very different love languages as friends and i will just he's his ignoring text that's his love language exactly yes because you know what most of the time he's he's probably looking at our messages going and they'll fucking figure it out
Starting point is 00:04:30 usually it's like okay there's gonna be 40 messages and all of it's gonna be solved by the time i can like get a word in and none of it's really that important anyways yeah it was important i'd be involved so um i do want to say that i am over to on announcing our live events yep the proper day that was bad oh man swing and a miss one more time uh it is wednesday october 9th yeah we will be at greta uh what day it's an argument wednesday october 9th that's the least opener against the more what day is it wednesday october 9th that's why adam's voice is hoarse as i made him rehearse that's right that's right now uh you get all ticket holders get a chili ones which is tyson berry's new beer unreal uh and a ten dollar game card to try out
Starting point is 00:05:16 all the games and we tried all the games and it was a riot like it's two floors yes of fun of video games it's insane just so much stuff by the way if the uh rims on the on the basketball uh you know shoot them uh are damaged uh that was me and adam uh i also want to say jesse did what about me yeah thank you no jesse did jesse just thank you he didn't touch the rim i i finished with like 140 points or something like that and steve was that like 50 no adam was at 50 i was at 90 sub 100 i am bad no it's crazy because you shoot you shoot you shoot and you're not doing well and then the net starts to move yeah and you start doing better for some reason they also have what i loved was they have the official nhl licensed bubble hockey yeah and rick generette
Starting point is 00:06:01 is doing the announcing on it it's either him or someone who does a very good impression oh my god and they have like the the the crazy part about is the actual uh jumbotron in the middle of the ice actually has like replay like like you know obviously fake replays fake replays but it's so cool yeah i was like man that's awesome it's it's the best bubble hockey i've ever seen yes like easily yeah hot wheels racer oh i have last with that they have mario kart yes they also have like um what are they what is it called virtual reality vr buck hunter buck hunter yeah we uh bar so vip seating and dinner so you get dinner with this package and vip seating 50 bucks seating for the show and the game 25 if you just want standing room or and seating for the in the lower level
Starting point is 00:06:46 because again it's two floors um uh all ticket holders are going to get the chilly ones and the ten dollar game card as well so you're you're getting a lot of value for this we want to make this like a really great experience and we got to make it clear like depending on because of the way the bars lay out you got to pay if you want a seat for the show yes we can't fit everybody there but we can fit everybody in the venue but to actually see us do the thing there's that's why we have the tears yes you might be standing in the back yeah regardless it's like a concert you will meet you it's like a concert um and you'll be able to buy steve's new hockey book uh hockey rants and raves before it's even released and that was the special part about this this is the steve dangle
Starting point is 00:07:26 book launch party um and there'll be a leafs jersey that you can win with the cut the string game that they have i don't even know how to play that and i'll probably have to record the lfr there that's sick that night yeah so you're also going to a live taping of the lfr yeah which i'm nervous for and semi hate no i've done it like twice ever it's gonna be a run a riot a riot terrifying so much terrifying but it'll be great um so uh so yeah so anyway we're really excited for that we hope to see you wednesday october 9th yes you said it right this time thank you a lot of people were upset thank you because you gave the wrong date were they mad yes i think it's a little important to get the dates of events right listen one more time i won't go over three
Starting point is 00:08:10 wednesday october 9th ah got it yeah yeah so it's correct what day is the sundin event uh that's that's after that's no no that's that's mature all i can do is focus on what is directly ahead of me anything beyond that and i get confused that's a that's a gino retta tip from when i was younger i don't know but let me find out yeah oh yeah that's absolutely i don't know used to drive him nuts absolutely i was king of i don't know my whole thing is let me get back to you let me get back to you i don't have an answer for that this is what my parent like my mom especially is the type of person who's i love you mom she's never going to see this kind of pushy when it comes to plans so whenever she if you you probably will you'll just text it to her
Starting point is 00:08:49 whenever she says why do you come over and do this and you can tell like she wants it and i don't know i'll be like let me let me circle back let me get back to on that one i don't i don't have an answer she will listen to this no she won't the d in stpn is dennis maryland that's true we named it after her yes steve dennis maryland network all right so wait here's what we got we got two games into the preseason a home and home with the ottawa senators and the leafs are oh and two and i love i love that claire hannah had the uh intelligence to ask the funny question which was is it time to panic that was claire i believe it was claire hannah and it was it was it was asked in a very funny way oh and and brube responded in a very serious way but like she
Starting point is 00:09:39 was like is it you know is it time like are you like and he's like and i just thought i didn't know who good on you okay but it's also good to test out whether craig brube really has a sense of humor or not and i know maybe not after a loss and so he seems scary he does he seems he went to the greg gilbert school of scary he was a marley's coach for a while and no one liked asking him fun questions uh we got it here if we want to play it yeah yeah this is uh this is fun so brew bay after being asked is it time to panic a lot of people are always going to look at two losses for this team is it time to panic but for you right it's fans i think get a little bit exactly pre-season so is this for you more about developing no humor
Starting point is 00:10:22 are you sure it was clear i heard people say it was rosy demand oh maybe it's rosy i don't know maybe it's rosie whoever it was you want one more time yeah it's pretty soon a lot of people are always going to look at two losses for this team is it time to panic but for you right it's fans i think get a little bit up to exactly pre-season so is this for you more about developing it's so awkward too because yeah he's trying to continue hey craig i have a bit i'm trying to do and he's like nope uh-uh no thank you it's pre-season it's why are you asking me that it's pre-season like come on having none of it no none of it none of it good you know he reminds me of i couldn't pin craig brube but now i have the angry blue eagle from the muppets almost he does look like
Starting point is 00:11:14 the angry blue i was just like that have you ever seen cloudy with a chance of meatballs and the guy's dad the guy's dad has such big eyebrows you only see the eyebrows no yeah maddie knows what i'm talking about i can pull it up yeah but see if we can pull out the angry blue eagle from muppets we'll do a and then cloudy with the chance of meatball's dad he does look like it right yeah totally yeah the angry blue eagles that's way better than mine that's so good we should put all three of them put him in the middle we'll get everything i can imagine is is muppet um uh muppet christmas carol yes like it is the american way so it's british it is the british way the british way i love this guy all i remember is where molly and
Starting point is 00:11:58 that scene used to scare scare the shit out of me as a kid natalie natalie when we watch it i make her watch it every christmas she still puts the mute on she she does not oh doesn't like scary at all young when that movie came out and it's terrifying it is it is well because they were like up on the stairs and stuff i was like oh my god moved all weird yeah like if you had a bedroom that cape that was similar to that where like i did when i grew up like my bedroom was at the top of the stairs so after i saw that scene my door was closed tight every night not interested don't know don't want to know what's going to float up the stairs i think a lot of um millennials childhood issues can be traced back to um when we were kids claymation was around oh
Starting point is 00:12:44 well it's horrible it was terrifying and and i think 80s movies and 90s movies there was a lot of death in kids movies a lot of parents dying like think of the lion king right and a lot of scary moments like there are like there think of brave little toaster what a terrifying track that shit is such an underrated kids movie it's so good but you were terrified brave little toaster and also rock a doodle i don't think i saw rock a doodle all right gentlemen all right here's craig we got craig berube on the screen we got animation looking craig berube come on tell me that's not great this is the guy from claudia with a chance of meatballs a little bit of joel quinville we got animated craig berube and now we got muppet craig berube
Starting point is 00:13:32 there you go i and we say this we say this of course with the the best means like i i really like craig you think i would say that to his face no hell no natalie was like hey is that uh is that our new head coach when we were watching last night i'm like no that's the press box with dave pool and i'm like that's why you recognize that guy i'm like she's like well what's our head coach look like i'm like look for the most intimidating man on the ice you'll see it i think steve's more right he looks more like the blue muppet uh angry blue muppet uh than he looks like i agree with the chance of meatball guy i agree but also not bad not bad i think the mustache if he didn't have a mustache yeah yeah i think it needs a mustache sam the eagle just just oh that's
Starting point is 00:14:15 i literally took an angry blue muppet i don't know i know sam the eagle sam has a name what is that so obviously what we're doing you know when we talk about these pre-season games we can take the blue muppet off uh obviously what we do is is we don't we we're not looking at team performance we're looking at individual performance after the first game craig said craig brube said i'll call him chief for sure sure uh chief said listen too cute too slow which is the issue every time they hit the playoffs he huge brownie points with me a few shifts in even though they were getting run out of the building in game one where he barked at them for their line changes i'm like oh welcome to toronto buddy like even though
Starting point is 00:15:04 they're they've been a very good regular season team over the years holy shit their line changes suck well why do you think we have so many too many men exactly uh it's just it's lazy i'll never understand that i'll never understand you're still on the ice eh like you're still in the middle of your job get the fuck off what are you doing oh please please that's been a problem since like the carlisle era yeah holy shit yeah sorry uh you can tell you can tell it's a bugaboo of how do you feel about the minnesota wild in 2012 oh you those sons of guns i think you know when you look at um when you look at that here's here's what i feel bad for there are fans that paid money to be at that pre-season game and uh in toronto and they really stunk out the joint in the first
Starting point is 00:15:51 period that is the risk you take when you buy a ticket to a pre-season game yes it's discounted but in toronto there's still i remember paying to go to a a pre-season game at rico now coca-cola coliseum it was a hundred dollars yeah man and somebody said to me or like are you insane i'm like well i didn't have kids yet um and i think you know you know ottawa fans seem to have a really good sense of this and they're like yeah like that arena wasn't even half sold out last night because it's pre-season save your money for the regular season with toronto the only thing i really feel bad for are the fans but i want to talk about the individual performances that stuck out to you guys if there was anything for those first two games where you're like um you know
Starting point is 00:16:32 this is good and this is not and i'm going to start with one okay i'm going to start with easton cowan and i thought it's again one game but i i and i you know the passes aren't crisp and i i'll grant you everything that you want to say but but but but but i didn't see a player who stood out enough to be considered for this nhl roster yet now is it all down to game no i know that is it down to practice yes but i don't see now with this roster the way it's even constructed and i would have a few weeks ago before robertson sign said this guy's got a good shot i need easton cowan if he's going to make this team to blow the doors off and i didn't see that last night yeah it's it's well it's like anything um specialists are great but if you
Starting point is 00:17:20 really need to get in the door at any workplace including the nhl you need to be able to do everything right and they didn't put them in a position to succeed like they didn't set them up with a cushy job on you know matthews or tavaris or kneelander's wing um but no they're intentionally seemingly making it hard good good like uh you need to be able to do it all like this is this is kind of a it's not just easton cowan like nick robertson we sort of go yeah it'd be good if he was here on the second line or here on the third line okay what about on the fourth line no that's a waste of time right like we all seem to agree across the board like he's not he wouldn't be an effective fourth liner right um he'd be better off either in the press box or in the ahl there's no
Starting point is 00:18:08 reason to do that right so easton cowan um i imagine he'll get a better opportunity than the one he got um he'll play with some better players and he's gonna look better um but like by the numbers i think kevin pipetti posted some of the um the possession numbers that whole line wasn't good right um killing quillen took a penalty uh cowan uh the possession was like 11 or something like that and i think uh nikita grobankan was sub 20 too and that's after having like a really good camp in a good first game so that whole line had a tough night i mean you know it it you could tell they weren't gonna win game two uh just by ottawa dictated everything and there was no line that was able to sort of overtake that but you know that that game was designed that way i guess i guess
Starting point is 00:19:07 the more concerning part is hey why the hell did the leafs regular stick yeah and then two guys aren't good to go out of it right right so matthews has a little something that's supposedly not serious and cali yarn croak has a little something supposedly also not serious supposedly also not serious but like geez you talk about getting nothing out of a preseason game yeah like you stunk out the joint and then i mean some players didn't look ready at all um you know you're looking for a good first impression how about jake mccabe holy shit dude that was terrible yeah and i mean that goes with most of the vets that we saw um good lord he got turned style by uh yakim chuck yeah is it um you know marna didn't look good on that either but mccabe was the one
Starting point is 00:20:01 who was standing right in front of him um so i would tack that onto him it wasn't all bad patch ready yeah two goal performance and an assist on the uh on the game tying goal from nylander uh before you name every yeah i know i'd like to go to jesse is that okay if we were doing this is adam's job this is adam's job is to now if you want to if you want to just keep going no no it's if you don't stop me no jesse i'll keep going i want to know what jesse thought is anybody stand out does anybody i'll let you down from last night if i'm allowed is that yeah yeah yeah from last night i thought it was fun to see pontus holmberg fight yeah fell behind in that that ridley grigg play where he brought him down from behind and
Starting point is 00:20:47 that was greasy he got he got charged for two minutes yeah not excusing that don't do that it's preseason really great didn't come back and he's might be injured like who knows what happens next with with him and the rest of the training camp don't do that you were slow you were trailing the play don't do that yeah but for him then to stand up and fight later in the game this is a guy who had looked it up after his 36 penalty minutes in his career like he's not a guy who takes penalties he's never been in a fight a professional fight in at the nhl level for him to do that in a preseason game where he was clearly in the wrong and they wanted to challenge him for of that round of applause like that's it that's i think you can't really judge the play like i
Starting point is 00:21:24 like he's he has that play on greg because i assume he's just not up to speed yet you know that doesn't probably doesn't happen the regular season but you can judge intensity and in that moment he didn't like uh bow down from the fight like he didn't back off from the fight and say like no it's a preseason game i'm not gonna fight you no he stood up and he fought so yeah little intensity out of pontus holmberg is a takeaway i can take from a meaningless preseason game and and to jesse's point i don't think the leafs hated it because today he's skating on a line with patch ready and tavaris hey that's great there you go i think i think holmberg has a place in this lineup yeah i agree yeah i i'm wondering jesse i it's so interesting you bring
Starting point is 00:21:59 his name up because i'm thinking like man okay maybe they use him up on the wing like they're gonna do in practice today or whatever but i look at david conf and i go uh listen guy's valuable guy does good stuff he was but you look at what sometimes it's a business it's a money game tell me what david conf that does that so much better than what if somebody wanted comp on waivers for free would you be upset no no but but i like him you know you know it doesn't mean i don't like right just before the show we were talking about like for whatever reason i don't know when it started but it's like just spread like wildfire leafs leafs nation's super down on kelly yarn croak and they want him the hell out and i i think it's that
Starting point is 00:22:44 i think it's just the cap hit however camp is such a specialist and yarn croak is not he's a utility guy who you can have do kind of everything a little bit like kerfoot um in that regard and some people are going to roll their eyes he doesn't make three and a half yeah 2.1 um uh i see holmberg more easily replacing what yarn croak can do than what camp can do just because like right now they got him skating on the right he can play the left he can play the middle um if you're looking for places in the lineup where you're like all right let's nickel and save a few bucks here if someone wants yarn croak and you have holmberg fulfill his duties i think that's something he could do right now the idea i i think ideally the leafs keep them all
Starting point is 00:23:35 because depth is good and there's how many games so many so many there's a lot of games 82 games so you're going to need more bodies like i'm not saying like punt i i don't get the the yarn croak hate because i think you have to amend your expectations i saw some tweets today people oh he never scores in the playoffs i'm like man have you watched cali yarn croak what he does that's not what he was brought in to do have you seen the pre cali yarn croak lease yeah exactly how about that he is a he is a guy who can kind of do a little bit of everything but he also plays good defense and we don't have wingers that do that and like any of them any of them him and marner like what and guys get hurt and he had a brief stint in the top six i think
Starting point is 00:24:20 he was on matthews and marner's wing and he he's scoring like every night yeah it was weird yeah so i think the the the callie yarn croak thing i don't quite understand on the back end one guy i really felt for yesterday who i think is gonna is gonna have to is nicholas mattingen yeah that was a bad play and he had a couple he had a couple and he just didn't look comfortable and i wondered remember this is a guy that was drafted by the leafs like eight years ago he's gone to europe and then you and he's played on big eye surfaces and i wonder sometimes if you know because it is so hand-eye right and it is so much pace and it is and it's so much closer together and these players are so much better they're just a step better i wonder if it's like this is going to
Starting point is 00:25:01 take a little bit of adjustment and maybe he only tops out as an ahl guy but i wonder if that's an echl ahl player that needs time to adjust i i don't like are there expectations on matt and then no this is somebody who's drafted in the sixth round is now 26 years old he's not a prospect at all and hasn't played in north america in a few years top scoring d-man in the german league last year which i hate to say means nothing like it doesn't it's not an apples to apples oh now he's going to be a great offensive no it's great that he has those chops um like oh i think uh frank corrado is incredible at what he does it was such a treat to have him on the broadcast yesterday the giveaway for me was less concerning i think he does that once in pre-season feels
Starting point is 00:25:51 really stupid about it and then doesn't do it again yeah right the more concerning thing that frank corrado pointed out is there was a moment in front of the net where he's got the puck in front of his own net and he's just dilly-dallying and taking his time and the sends converge because yeah that's where you go it's not shell where you kind of just kill time you know when you're in front of your net yeah i didn't understand that he was standing there so like that that to me seemed like a bad tendency that seemed more repeatable hey don't throw a random grenade uh cross slot in front of your goalie when the game's tied in the third yeah oh okay to be fair to him that's been the standard for the leafs though yeah he's just you know what you know i
Starting point is 00:26:34 hate to bring up he's been watching footage i hate i'm gonna fit in great series but we had two of those oh dermot and uh calchenya calchenya just kill me yeah but yeah the the game is slower over in europe like it's not nhl quality game and i assume i think the ahl is probably the second best league in the world and he wasn't playing there either so i don't understand if anybody least fan out there has expectations this guy's gonna make the team or be impactful on the d they have so much d depth that i don't think mattingen really has a place uh outside of the marlies i would agree i might like philly myers is ahead of him might be the cyclones right like Yeah, even there.
Starting point is 00:27:09 If you look at the Marlies' D-depth, it's actually really good. They look like they're going to be at least a strong, sturdy defensive team this year. It's interesting. I imagine he'll be in the A just because if you look at his resume there, you're the highest scoring player in Germany. I don't know. You might as well. You can crack the Marlies, yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:29 Well, and also like... You could just go back. Damn, if they're going to put me in the ECHL, I might as well just go play in Germany. Right. He is from Ottawa, so there might be the motivation to play in North America. Yeah, it's not that he doesn't know how to play on North American ice. If you look at his career, the vast majority of it is on North American ice, but he's maybe adjusting back.
Starting point is 00:27:51 Yeah, totally. It's crazy what an offensive player he was. Look at his OHL career. He didn't have this. This wasn't a part of his game, and then he went to Europe and was like, 18-19 with the Bulldogs in the OHL. 30 points in 40 games. Overager, though.
Starting point is 00:28:09 Yeah. I was just saying, like, it's there. It's good. He's developing some skills, right? And then he goes the VSVEC in Austria. 42 points in 46 games. This dude has been through the friggin' wilderness. Yeah, played for the Laval Rocket a little
Starting point is 00:28:23 after his stint at University of Ottawa. CCHL, four OHL teams, two seasons at the University of Ottawa, uh eight games in the ahl goes to austria goes to germany jeez i think you'd be happy to stick around anywhere yeah six round pick like let's temper expectations yeah yeah no i just felt for him yeah no you don't want to when your whole thing as a player coming to camp as a as a like potential like hey i'm trying to make my way to the show and then you have that showing on like national tv and like all the leaf slams are tuning
Starting point is 00:29:01 it's not great now now first impressions don't have to stick because uh mike johnson pointed out something that i totally forgot so benoit i think took two penalties last night and yeah this was fun on the broadcast he pointed out in benoit's first game uh preseason game last year he took three yeah so they're like we got to recreate the circumstances for him maybe he'll have a great season again yeah and we were all looking at him after that game and going oh he's not close he's not even close and then he plays like i don't know a couple weeks i think there was a sen sen's tweeter that said it's or somebody else said it's less good brother brother on brother violence so it's because it was kneelander on kachuk oh kachuk on kneelander oh oh wow wow
Starting point is 00:29:47 wow benoit got in his face right that's tough uh benoit wearing the a the oh johnson was mentioned in that too that's you're hoping that someone takes a picture yeah you can throw the a for that night like that's fun yeah mike johnson uh said uh you hope the guy who takes pictures for the hockey cards yeah thanks in that day yeah i love that no but like it's so meaningless i thought that was such a great tip and i'm so happy you remember that that he said that during the broadcast because like i sat there i'm like yeah that three penalties first person in the game this guy's trash no the game doesn't mean anything yeah is what it actually means yeah i mean you don't you don't want him to look completely out of place or anything but like but if he does it
Starting point is 00:30:25 could just mean nothing final preseason game if he does it i'll be like okay that's more concerning but like this is glorified shinny it's practice this is yeah it's um it's an angrier scrimmage and they're they're cutting down uh preseason games they were the least only have six this year which is good that's the minimum you can play and some teams are playing like eight so we don't have to sit through eight preseason games which is awesome but it should be like four if we're being honest it should be like you get the squads out two times you know you split up the teams and that's it yeah you could argue mistakes are magnified as a result right oh there's so many well if you have a bad game in you know previous years you might have had an
Starting point is 00:31:07 opportunity to fix it once or twice after that but like some guys who played last night may not play for the team again yep ever bring it ever four preseason games would be nice yeah yeah we'll get there two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer register today at pmcfwalk.ca uh people obviously are wondering what nick robertson's future will be and it's interesting because berube was asked about him and he said he's
Starting point is 00:32:01 been great in camp his work ethic has been unbelievable he's hounding pucks he's just got to do that tonight in the game this is pre-game and he did he doesn't have to complicate his game which he didn't use his speed play straight lines be responsible defensively and i they made a point on the broadcast of pointing that out the stick work in the corners of course this is this is so par for the course with robertson it's like and there he oh he got lit up again oh he did he did get wrecked poor guy but he's always back up again like snaps right back to his feet he's always right back up and again they're rewarding him today in the skate yes matthews and yarn croaker out but it's uh he's on a line on the right wing once again with
Starting point is 00:32:43 nylander and mcmahon that's pretty good that's i mean he has already skated on a higher line in camp and then not played on that line so we'll definitely see what they do uh next game next game i think is going to be a far bigger indicator of what they plan on doing yeah going forward doer missing this camp sucks it does it does and they did today i saw and i can't find the tweet but i basically saw that they've divided camp now which they have to do 60 players there um they've divided camp now into what seems to be the ahl squad and what seems to be the nhl squad you want me to just read it yeah you got it yeah so mark masters lines at practice today nize domey marner mcmahon neilander robertson patch ready tavaris holmberg lorenz camp reeves
Starting point is 00:33:35 yeah two guys are missing from that but like that's the nhl forward group yeah doer i think would be the only guy that i can think of well he's got an nhl contract lorenz and pat ready right right uh riley tanev yep oel mccabe yep benoit lilligren yep rafai who i think made a he was pretty snarly last night timmons um you could i mean outside of hawk and paw you could make an argument that that's seven and eight uh wool store stallers like yeah that's the nhl group minus the guys who are hurt basically like who's who's missing really yeah other than like guys who are going to get waived who could play nhl games like i don't know mermis and myers and so max domey is replacing austin matthews permanently crazy forever that's crazy you
Starting point is 00:34:25 said those are the lines matthews is scratched won't make the team so domey needs to go up by i think 60 goals to match him i think he can do it you have nine last year that's something like that yeah i think he can do it you think so oh yeah wow yeah really believe in max no he'll be domey to the max oh okay no that wasn't good no it's quite good all right here wait don't go to the next topic wait for everyone to stop laughing do we need to be do we need to be worried about yes i mean answer's no because it's second preseason game i just go ahead specifically austin matthews no no you don't think so nah well i mean upper body is so incredibly vague if he's got a wrist thing again then yeah that's a difference of like 25 goals
Starting point is 00:35:16 right what if he like stubbed his thumb you know like yeah i got a little it happened i got a little bruise on my elbow or something like we literally don't know what happens it looks like it was very minor right he's fine yeah i don't think craig needs a ton of evaluating of austin matthews camp either yeah i feel like he might know this 34 seems pretty good yeah by the way that's top line and uh wendell clark were at camp today and they asked matt's about the all-time leaf scoring record and matt said well assuming he's healthy he's gonna break mine pretty quick they're currently austin matthews is 52 goals behind him yeah he's gonna break that's unbelievable he's gonna break ovechkin's record like that's the conversation he's we're talking about he might be
Starting point is 00:35:56 sundine this season i hope he does wow wouldn't that be cool wow uh and it would dovetail perfectly with matt's book uh yes it would uh so i you know that's we should we should go for it should be happy about that now um i want to send i'm going to send this over to jesse this is a graphic and obviously it's a little bit unfair uh because when you announce a team as we saw with the pwhl a couple years ago as we've seen with utah recently it's very very difficult jesse i did text it to you i hope it showed up um very very difficult to get a name get a brand get a logo you're happy with and it's important here get it to i want to say get it to print but get it to the factory to make it in time right so what utah has had to do this year and i think
Starting point is 00:36:45 these jerseys will eventually become collectibles is they just have utah on them yep i you know i used uh i used oh if you look at the graphic it says kings zero hockey club two this is on the for everybody listening it's on like the score bug it's 2-0 for the hockey club versus the king now in just whoever's doing the fucking graphics on whatever station this is running on try harder uh like try a little harder hc i kind of like it just write utah like what are you doing yeah i just thought that was a funny little graphic no hockey club i like that a lot no the jerseys thing i i saw i've seen because we did a clip about that and people have been ripping on them like how much freaking time do they need like okay yes books and jerseys are
Starting point is 00:37:40 not the same i understand my book had to be done by like the beginning of july to be released on october 15th and we just had an event and people were like oh is your book for sale and no it's literally not ready yet like there's not enough of them available that we can make it available at this event it takes time to make shit en masse i know nba players when they want a jersey number change i think their cutoff date is beginning of july for the next season oh wow yeah so if players want because it's a whole industry that they have to revamp and edit and everything that goes into just a guy's player number you know so it's a thing like it doesn't send it out and fulfilling every graphic every stat you know you got to change all of the all of the numbers
Starting point is 00:38:26 so you need months lead up and yeah i don't blame them for not having a jersey like who cares that's they're gonna be yeti next year yeah they are it's a worst kept secret but i'm glad they did it you know how we were saying a few weeks ago that names are kind of stupid anyway that might be one of the best ones and i was i was watching no no oh yeti got it um i was watching uh monsters inc this weekend and i hope that they take the yeti for monsters inc and make them make him the the mascot john goodman drops the puck oh i love that that'd be good that'd be good uh you could tell i'm watching a lot of kids movies lately um so uh the on on the utah track though and i thought this was really really interesting according to pierre lebrun who says
Starting point is 00:39:09 according to the utah hockey club 8400 season tickets and full season equivalents have been sold uh a lot of work has been done since the start time in april and what's important about that is there's only a certain amount that they're going to make available for season seats right and the delta center right now is only 12 000 so to get to 8400 pretty amazing also 8400 is like nearly double the capacity of the previous arena yeah so they're doing okay yeah they're doing okay yeah and i got there it kind of shows the excitement around the uh around the product and i'm i'm the hockey it just doesn't make a lot of sense and to me it's like man why did they do this before it's a very like it's it's like denver why did hockey not work in denver the
Starting point is 00:39:54 first time do you know what i'm saying yeah it should work in the mountains yeah it ought to be fine well why like they had the olympics there yes how many how many places in north america have hosted the winter olympics and don't have an nhl team right like oh yeah well lake placid but i don't think they could well a little yeah tad different yeah um it's no it's it's you know we we didn't really talk about utah very much when talking about expansion but it makes a lot of sense uh the last thing i want to say is did you know that utah's first ever franchise goal regular season or pre-season was on themselves yes i saw that you see that much that's a dang it yeah and that is dang it because no matter what even when they score in
Starting point is 00:40:49 the regular season their first goal as a franchise will still always be on themselves do they get the puck do they get do they keep it they i'm gonna say probably not do they get the puck out of their own net if i were a st louis blue and i was smart i would have kept it 100 because in a few years that's gonna be worth a lot of money hell yeah yeah you sell that to a collector you know i love that oh i hope it goes to some like echler we'll never hear from again yeah he's like nope yoink like who even got credit for the goal i don't even know am i the only person that's like stats don't count so it's not like none of this no but it's the fun of it it is yeah yeah the fun of is but like in terms of like act and moving on after this week like that's fun i think you drop it
Starting point is 00:41:34 after this week it's fun it's a good tweet but i don't know what it is besides that um we should talk about how they're going to be called the utah yeti but the color avalanche get to forever own them because the avalanche's first ever mascot was howler the yeti which why did they move off of howler it's now bernie the saint bernard yeah we all love bernie bernie's fantastic howler but the og mascot in colorado was howler the yeti yeah and then they moved on from them some finders keepers losers weepers shut up avalanche fans i don't know if drew's gonna join this but like they're always they're saying i saw on reddit they're like we were first you know like we get to forever dunk on utah because we had the yeti yeah okay and they still have the
Starting point is 00:42:18 foot patch with the yeti foot so i don't know i think we're gonna have some healthy competition how about you focus on going back to blue pants or going away from blue pants and back to black pants you weirdos that's still the i hate the blue pants i please go back to black pants please what's wrong with you i think it's the shade of blue it's the shade of blue but it's bad it's wrong yeah it's wrong what yeah it's there's potential there there's you we need some tweaks adam hates joe sackick no love joe what i mean yeah no yeah you know what if there's a guy to hate it's joe g o uh from pierre lebrun uh it seems like shish durkan and swayman really want to set a new bar for goalies and contracts shisterkin looking for north of carry prices
Starting point is 00:43:02 10.5 where swayman is really focused on an eight-year deal now since price which was years and years almost a decade ago and brovsky which was half a decade ago we have not seen goalie prices really get beyond eight eight and a half i mean the fact vasilevsky makes under 10 is insane it's insane it's insane like and that's the that's like the one outlier right yes and so what was i found interesting was that apparently the rangers are willing to go north of 10 and a half with just jerkin but it seems to be how much north how much further he is the best goalie in the game pretty much year in year out he's he's and he's a top five and the difference between him and swayman is swayman is not a ufa well also like okay i'm cheering for the bruins to um
Starting point is 00:43:53 for whatever's bad for them sure for obvious reasons you hope that ottawa corpus allo shows up yes swayman doesn't play yeah yeah i hope they lose every game yeah and no offense but you understand of course you do you understand when you like i think swayman's a bloody fantastic goalie yeah extremely where's he from jesse do you know where he's from uh he's from alaska crazy where though no north pole alaska's phoenix coffee yeah i think you're getting the bit oh man sorry sorry you freaking idiot you got any tony hand facts for me i do have some tony from uh anchorage and normal alaska ah ah non-santa alaska so i think swayman is an incredible goalie but when you talk about two goalies asking for the same thing and you put shusterkin who's been
Starting point is 00:44:44 one of the best goalies in the nhl for several years now yeah as a 60 50 60 game playing starter versus jeremy swayman who hasn't really been an undisputed starter yet um it it puts his ask into perspective but i don't that being said i hope he makes 50 his ask isn't i think his ask really and jesse sorry i'll be honest it's really shisterkin's about the money value swayman's about the contract length right because nobody wants to sign a goalie to an eight-year deal because why they're really unpredictable he wants he wants a certain value over that sure he wants something like eight i think it's north of eight at least eight times eight i think it's probably more than that but but and and i what's his jersey number listen i'll say this the reason that swayman
Starting point is 00:45:32 might want more than eight is because he knows how much the cap's gonna go up and is probably like you got to pay me based on where the cap is in the future too so jesse i want to ask you your general manager yes would you pay igor north of 10 and a half north of 10 and a half no because i thought the market was set over the last two years or last year and a bit because connor hellebuck and elias roken signed they are on the first years of their new deals that one is eight years one is seven years connor hellebuck's being paid 8.5 million dollars over the course of seven years. Elias Sorokin is being paid 8.25 over the course of eight years. So we know that the market for the top goaltenders in the National Hockey League is around 8.5. That's the ceiling that
Starting point is 00:46:18 Connor Hellebuck set. So Igor, you come to me in negotiations. I say, you're better than that. I believe in you. I love my Rangers. You're better than Connor Hellebuck. I'm going to give you nine. We want to do a low negotiating here. Maybe I bend. I give you nine five. That's a million dollars over the benchmark that the uh vesna trophy winner connor hellebuck set so i feel like nine five would be reasonable just jerk it so for shusterkin but the cap being further up and vasilevsky making the same vasilevsky's in year five of that eight-year deal okay you want to set the new bar yeah nine seven nine eight nine nine no i don't know but that's if the bar is vassy and hellebuck you're you're surpassing it based on you need to surpass it by like three
Starting point is 00:47:00 million based on like look at look at vasilevsky i love that puckpedia does this year five of eight yeah shister can make or shister can asking for more than vasilevsky now is reasonable sure um if you're if you're looking at comparisons but the the reason i brought up hellebuck and sorokin is that they signed recently and that's the current market because this was signed five years ago where just like the borowski deal just like the carry price deal people thought it would have been reasonable to pay gold tenders 9 10 and 10.5 million dollars and over the course of the last five years we've discovered that hey that's probably not a good idea the bar's probably probably like 8.5 it's just irking should probably be ahead of that which is like 9.7 the difference
Starting point is 00:47:48 is even is just irkins a little younger than hellebuck i didn't realize how close they were an age 28 he seems so much younger because of when he started 28 versus 31 it's a big three years though like 28 is like oh he's in his prime 31 it's like oh yeah totally he's getting ready to settle down if you're telling me the bar is above vaski vassy i'll like yeah sure but that's like 10 not 10 5 10 5 seems absurd i understand what you're saying yeah would you do a full eight yeah yeah you do give it to him yeah you gotta figure it out figure that out four years from yeah that's four like who cares well hopefully you have a cup i don't care you know like that that's how i would go into the you asked me like how i would negotiate that's how i would go into
Starting point is 00:48:30 the negotiations i think that'd be reasonable to come out with something that's like nine seven nine eight even like tens we're getting up there but ten five is you're pushing uh jeremy swayman number one he's asking for 11 stop what stop um i do want to say that uh i think um i think it's going to be interesting because when this when the shisterkin contract's done essentially what's he making right now it's five uh five point six six six six so his his money is going to be the money that jake truba leaves with like like that is essentially as soon as this happens you know that that truba conversation will be revisited this off season right oh uh seven we get eight million dollars in here you go yeah we talked about this in our new york rangers season preview
Starting point is 00:49:21 that's coming out on the stpn youtube channel over the next week and a week or so the new york rangers are kind of in a last dance situation where because they have a lot of young guys that are due a lot of money last dance with this group with this exact group because they have to pay a bunch of people and when you have to pay a bunch of people in the salary cap world that you face some trouble so we don't know who's gonna have to go out it looks like it's gonna be some of those older guys well and you've got like we talked i think cj said it last year he's like you got a loaded right side anyway you got fox and schneider right and you could figure out bottom bearing d but you can't have a guy yeah uh make it seven mil on the right right side down fox
Starting point is 00:49:56 schneider miller lingren like like i'm i'm scared i'm scared of like how they figure out how do you retain lingren you know because like he andre miller needs a contract yeah zach jones needs a contract chad rue we at all which is like nothing i shouldn't even mention that uh vc though matt rempe cooley enstrom laugh caco riley smith like that's the list and then a lot of and then igor as well so a lot of money what's your identity right um you got to figure out what you are you can't just randomly assemble this group of players you think are good right so okay i got igor shisterkin we start there all right well what should i do if i have one of the best goalies in world well i tell you what how about i take this crazy top four we literally already have yeah i
Starting point is 00:50:42 keep all those guys and then i prioritize everything else steve do you mean prioritizing that above laugh yeah kind of damn i mean someone has to score goals obviously it's you know it's it is a goal scoring contest it's not not important but what is your thing what is your strength what wins you games when when the game's tied in the third what it's is it that you're going to score the next goal or you're not going to allow the next one yeah and are they going to keep the veteran group together like right like mika is great still so do you look at a guy like he'll hope he's healthy by the way oh not a bad hit yes oh yeah but he's back he was back on the ice oh he was yeah yes he's okay okay okay he was back on the ice i was looking at that too going
Starting point is 00:51:27 no yeah i was like well there goes our rangers preview so obviously you say last dance though like is is a guy like vinny trocek who is extremely valuable great cap hit but maybe something the rangers have to look at and go okay he's under contract that makes him valuable it's about five million that makes him even more valuable he's a centerman like i i'm just throwing names out there but like you keep do you let he don't take the next step get him into the top six these are all valuable questions and we're looking at it from we're looking at it from the perspective as three guys who cheer for uh a team that is terrified of action yeah the the leaf do not move on from their group i don't think the rangers are chris drury has no problem no moving
Starting point is 00:52:10 on from from i mean jesus he tried to tried to shank his captain yeah you know what i mean and it no fan really held it against him no they're like all right yeah he negotiated it but you should try helps that he didn't play well helps that he didn't play well and all that um i i i don't think the rangers would like yes it's a last dance for the group it's not a last dance for their no contention window no that's not all then yeah no no i know um i like do they do this do they do that do they do that i don't think jury i think he's already had the all right how do we keep this group together discussion i think he's probably internally already moved on from that and gone what's the next move yeah he's probably he's 10 steps ahead of the conversation we're
Starting point is 00:52:59 having yeah yeah now interestingly uh the athletic has the rangers ranked as 15th which is rare for a good team uh to be ranked that high in terms of pipeline it's not prospect i was like in the league no no no okay no but like a team that is at the top of their division should be down where like the penguins are in like 28 29th and so now they include laugh they include schneider because it's pipeline who are the young guys ready to take over but you've got gabe perot who they just drafted a couple years ago um brennan offman so like that should help um that should help the um the winger sides of the lineup um i think what they're probably gonna lack if they moved on from a guy like vinnie is is another center at that but you can figure that out um it seems like
Starting point is 00:53:41 they've got and will uh cooley cooley yeah cool uh i think he is a guy that too i mean he was drafted four years ago yeah yeah no the thing about the rangers is how deep they are like it's it's fascinating that you bring up the prospect stuff because a lot of their young guys who are the quote prospects are on this team contributing right now like cooley like laugh like caco like that's there's cores of this team that are right there in the mix here and that's why they're so deep and i think they got a good shot at the cup again and i don't know that matt rempe ever tops out as more than a he's technically a center throw rempe in that but he's a center oh no he's on the pipeline perfect yeah he should becomes a good penalty killer yeah there's your fourth line
Starting point is 00:54:18 center oh yeah what he wants to be uh what's the name of the the person who is in a dad band who owns them oh uh nolan or james dolan james dolan uh i'm shocked that he has a team this well run like they won the president's trophy last year they had their second final four appearance in three years i think and they have a middle of the pack pipeline i believe that's because they're largely ignored knicks or he's he loves the new york knicks and his band dude the rangers are really and like throw if you want to throw in keon jim miller who's 24 if you want to throw in schneider who's 23 adam fox is 26 yeah like it's it's right to win the norse every year yeah yeah that's a good team yeah it's a good team man what what problems man can you imagine
Starting point is 00:55:04 we might have to move on from good player and replace him with good young player man oh yeah they're gonna they're gonna lose guys the best goalie in the league they're gonna lose guys they're gonna have this cap space and then sit on it i guess like no it's the rangers that they're uh i mean out of all the teams in the league you shouldn't be worried about that's probably near the top. Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer. That's why every step and dollar raised matters. On September 19th, join thousands in Toronto for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation Walk. Challenge yourself, friends, and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research. Together, we can carry the fire and help create a world free
Starting point is 00:55:48 from the fear of cancer register today at pmcfwalk.ca so mark lazarus friend of the show joined us during all-star uh uh said uh there was some spicy happenings at the draft in vegas that we were not aware of until today and that is that carill the thrill wanted to be traded to the chicago blackhawks now are you gonna have this clarification in there i will i wanted to start with the salacious because i feel like i feel like you should ignore it no let's not you're on your own there mark let me clarify please he did this two hours ago i reported back in june that the blackhawks see kaprizov as a potential big ad in two years this generation's marion hosa so to speak is kaprizov intrigued by the possibility sure does he want it now no i misspoke extemporaneously
Starting point is 00:56:41 on the pot kaprizov has two years left on his contract the decision is forever away nothing imminent nothing in stone kaprizov is not asking out stand down i did not intend otherwise and uh and he said in short the blackhawks like kaprizov and have their eye on i mean which you should that's super caliente because it is the wilds best player yeah it is a star in this league and it is him potentially going to a divisional rival which that's i hated divisional rival killer like we sort of talked about this in the previews like the minnesota wild they're in a world of hurt right now blackhawks in a world of hurt right now but they're both we understand the path and that would be really shit for the minnesota wild's plans to have carol the thrill
Starting point is 00:57:28 go to chicago yeah yeah i want very interesting i wonder what kind of um what kind of information he had access to like okay good let's break this down for a sec here boys uh if sydney crosby had been a free agent at the end of this year he ultimately resigned but if he had i still think he is i don't buy it yeah oh yeah name a team name a team in the nhl that wouldn't be interested well exactly uh if mitch marner makes it to free agency this year name a team that would not be interested so do we know why don't we ever talk about how miko ranson is going to be a free agent we don't talk about that it's not true just you know we're all talking about every other team we assume it's going to work out yeah because it probably will yeah i'm just saying by the way
Starting point is 00:58:19 i think mitch is i mean i think it's going to work out for mitch at toronto but why here's my question about this is so so every good player every team should be interested in in fact there are certain teams that should be more interested like the ducks they should be interested in anybody that breathes ducks sharks flames if you have a pulse you should you should be interested um i'm i'm looking at caprizov and going yeah of course the blackhawks would be interested so would everybody else why do you think kaprizov's name 24 months out is specifically mentioned there is something to that and i'm not trying to put mark on the hot seat here but like he's not a mark's a well-connected guy there's something here yeah but like that
Starting point is 00:59:06 that is i i think maybe you look at the cap situation and you look at all right in this year they hopefully take a step forward from the basement um but in two years you look to make an aggressive move right so you take steps you take steps and now you have you know you look at that free agent class and who could be there and there's like one of the craziest guns in the league right you add to conor bedard and this excellent group of young players a 40 goal score i would be shocked if when caprizov's up he makes anywhere less than 12 million bucks that guy is gonna make if his health holds up yeah if his health holds up that's the key right um yeah so anyway i just thought that was spicy and caliente and quick let's talk about you said there's there's a couple
Starting point is 00:59:55 of things i'm gonna bring up the amazon event that we were at on monday and there there's something we can tell you and something we can't what we can't tell you is what we saw we're allowed to review it and give our reviews after thursday it's um it's nda till thursday and out of respect for amazon uh we're not not this thursday no no like not this thursday yeah oh i thought it was this no it's october no october oh good thing you guys mentioned it i was gonna date not his specialty true greta october 9th that's real wednesday yeah um so whatever thursday it is after that we'll give our whichever thursday but we did see an episode uh we can say it was the willie and david pasternak episode uh but we can actually like get into and talk about uh because
Starting point is 01:00:46 again we can't talk about our reactions to the episode we can't talk about the contents of the episode we can talk about uh the fact that amazon's got some pretty exciting things on offer you've got monday night hockey um and just so you guys know i will be streaming monday nights on sdpn as well yep until the playoffs where steve will do an east coast i'll do a west coast um and uh and then obviously um so i'm gonna be doing the amazon monday night game no matter what it is it's a lot of them are not leaf games that's fine most of them most of them are not and then they've got this thursday night coast to coast thing with andy petrello which is sort of like red zone i wonder where they got the idea from uh it feels a little ice surfing ish so there was there was a
Starting point is 01:01:28 moment a funny moment during the presser where because we're sitting there and we're like yeah it sounds a bit like ice surfing and then they're like and one thing that's going to be heavily involved is social media and one of my like former supervisors at sports net was sitting directly behind me and i felt him leaning into me and i just turned around and and he as he's leaning he just goes it puts his hand up he's like nope doesn't even need to be said doesn't even need to be said he knew i listen it's not like we own the idea no i think ice surfing is red zone basically well and i think it's just that it was a good idea but it was on twitter video right that was always a very good idea yeah it was just we made fun of you for it because we're
Starting point is 01:02:13 your friends and we love you uh because it was to to be frank very few people go to twitter for video like that live video right over the course of three hours it would have made sense to put it on youtube it would have had i think there was a deal with twitter canada and they were helping pay for it or whatever it was yes but like that's not where the world was going i put it on tv put it on tv you have like 800 sports nets throw it on one of them you have a good lineup too good lineup of people hey it's covid and i've been making an outrageous uh amount of content can you put on dang it's for free no okay uh how about hat picks for free no okay how about uh trade trees for no okay i'll just i'll just stay at home yeah yeah so so i think the the so the amazon
Starting point is 01:02:58 monday night thing will be great obviously um you probably already know who some of the guys are so you've got jody shelly shade 90 mark messier's in there adnan verks in there thomas hickey thomas hickey's in there and his name escapes me at the moment uh because i just closed the window but the broadcaster who was with the hurricanes for 20 years 25 john forsling john forsling and i have to say foresland the first time i've met john foresland i didn't we didn't meet him um it was the first time i'd seen him in person and what a statuesque man i'm like wow he is his voice classic broadcaster classic tv man you know yes yes yeah there is there's the lineup right there one of the shots from uh the event and uh oh and uh did we mention blake bolden no we didn't sorry
Starting point is 01:03:41 she's uh the the uh the resident young yeah the resident youth her and uh thomas hickey is actually pretty young too yeah a lot of people are jacked about hickey like yeah man like well people forget how stoked on thomas hickey people were yeah when he was in junior uh fourth overall pick i think to the islanders and he's not your classic i mean you can't even call him a bust he put together a pretty decent nhl career but he messed up his shoulder i think a lot of islander fans were like super just like he had a lot of hype around him and then the things just didn't go the way you'd expect a fourth overall pick to but they still they don't have any hate towards him i think there's still jack that beloved he's doing stuff because they understand what happened
Starting point is 01:04:26 exactly because islanders fans are smart hockey fans yes yeah yeah no except for when it comes to Tavares they're smart they're good they're good for the game I'd burn his honestly statue or whatever yeah it's it's the best Tavares scarecrow if I were them it's the best one way one way rivalry in NHL history because uh because Islanders fans hate him and I know he loves them like he loved playing there your classic it's go to hell John it's unfortunate you think that uh here's andy patrillo uh at the event talking we captured this video is on our twitter and instagram here's her talking about uh nhl for red zone those and getting very frustrated the philadelphia eagles i will watch nfl red zone just to get caught up on everything else that's
Starting point is 01:05:12 happening and the fact that we get to do that now in hockey and people are able to go to it and say oh maybe this was a game i wasn't going to watch you know the entirety of but now i've just checked in and i saw the incredible goal or we just checked in for a power play and so and so just did this great move and so and so just had this incredible assist like we're piping in during the key moments of the games and those and getting so that'll be fun steve what are you trying to say i was trying to say you can use that of course yeah we it's our video i record dude i don't know press conference is talking about source you can that's our footage we are the press outlet that had that good good for us see what are you worried about we nailed it there was actually there was an
Starting point is 01:05:53 awkward moment during the press conference where no one was asking any questions and our own adam wilde asked the first question i haven't done a press conference since dolly parton that's right that can't be true that was my last press conference was dolly parton you didn't do any at bell uh no not a single one not a single one what's it like being in the same room i know it was dolly yeah she's amazing yeah amazing i uh her energy carries the whole room you love dolly barton but i know i felt bad they bring up the the announcers and and like all the toronto media is there even the heads of the other the heads of the other companies are vicious toronto media and and then they're like hey so do you have any questions for the on-air talent i'm like well
Starting point is 01:06:36 this would be interesting the answer was a resounding no everybody just sat there and i was like and then and then andy takes the microphone she's like well i love standing up here uh awkwardly i was like okay i'm asking a fucking question so i'm gonna end up adam wild sdpn you know how are you gonna my question was of softball how are you gonna how are you gonna differentiate yourself from the already pre-established tsn and hockey night canada broadcast and and then they all went through and had an answer and they wrapped it was like 10 minutes yeah no you carried you made that press conference because you're the only person thank god you did that i i thought it would have been really awkward i honestly i've been up in that situation and it's usually like you go speak
Starting point is 01:07:16 at a kid's school or something and it's like do you have any questions for radio dj you've never heard of i've definitely spoken to class like humber i answered a lot of questions from the teacher yes yes so you're like nah i don't want these guys deserve this is their big fucking day like we're asking a fucking question man and they're all super nice people so i'm i don't know it seems to be exciting and you know what uh after 11 years this is the 11th year of the deal you know i think there's first off there is room for three broadcasters and i'm convinced that amazon will be the national broadcaster tsn and sports net after 2026 are going to be regional and i think that a little bit of new blood and a little bit of competition is good i think we have
Starting point is 01:07:56 the the reality of the situation is you've got two telecoms that own the sports networks and um amazon's got to come in and one of the first things they're going to have to do is they're going to have to establish credibility on that broadcast that's why it's loaded with former nhl players 90 shelly messier uh hickey all those guys are former nhl guys and you've got two two great hosts uh as well and then you've got ford and who's been who's 35 whatever years in the nhl and i think blake bolden who's got her own illustrious resume yes that's what i mean like blake and andy right they have these great resumes and so what amazon will have to do is go we actually like we're establishing
Starting point is 01:08:35 our credibility with the audience and then they'll be able to loosen up and have a little bit more fun now we can't spoil anything but I can talk about the things that the public already knows before you get to that two people we just got a shout out that were at the event before you
Starting point is 01:08:51 get to the you want to talk about the thing that's in the trailer and all that stuff let's let's save that for the end because that'll be long that's a long conversation two people we got a shout out that showed up one William Nylander yes he walked down to the event he was there he talked about his favorite things in toronto we'll play that it's our video steve so we can play it oh thank you a big part of the show is i mean the dog walks that's one of my uh one of my go-tos but um other than that i mean just go out for dinners at some
Starting point is 01:09:14 restaurants that i like so it was one of my favorites um like italian food soto soto and some sushi places but uh other than that i mean pretty chill i mean it's a busy schedule during the season so um don't really have that much time to do stuff occasionally some shopping you know but other than that it's pretty chill um the man has an aura he does when when he's in the room he is people gravitate towards him you know he's there uh willie it was very cool to see him he has a a presence and a stardom in this series that i didn't know he had he's gonna have all i could when we watched it all i could think was he's gonna get so many endorsement deals this year it's gonna be stupid yeah he's gonna be everywhere he uh you know mike agello mike and
Starting point is 01:10:00 buffalo famously used to call him 90 second willie which i think is the worst nickname in the history of hockey yeah but that could mean a lot 90 second willie because like he would his pressers would be 90 seconds or less and they would contain nothing um and you know pressers are pressers yeah but this this one-on-one thing where like he's featured is god he thrives so much now the thing on the bench no no no i can't get there yet that's we're ending with that because i just want to shout out that i said we're shouting out two people who were we were in the room with okay one willie two i believe for the first time ever the three of us were in the room with the count himself ah gary bettman there he is he was on stage he was there for the entire event i didn't
Starting point is 01:10:50 i thought he was gonna come in because he let off the event with a q a gary on stage i thought he was gonna fly out you know i thought he's just q a and leave but he was there the entire event he was there at the end for the mingle and the drink wine and pick hors d'oeuvres part two he sure was and uh he was there and bill daly was there too bill daly was there too so head office was having a fun little day and you know what uh i i know that we're we're very hard on them i i have to say good for them good on them this seems like a really good partner to bring to nhl broadcasting oh like the biggest company in the world yeah well i know but that sometimes can be bad no no totally right and and and you know i do think i know what you mean though steve yeah yeah yeah i
Starting point is 01:11:29 yeah no you nailed it well i think that can't it can't go bigger than biggest it kind of makes sense though doesn't it yeah and i i look at it and uh who steve mayer who's the head of marketing for nhl is there too this is going to give more profile in this country i really i really am pro this i'm excited about this and all you that i was wondering about the pricing thing my thing was am i gonna have to pay extra for hockey and you don't so you have amazon prime i've had prime since like 2010 and you thought it would be this new thing yeah no you just if you have prime you have and it's not even like you have like you've got the prime where you get like free shipping on your prime orders that's also for your like video thing this isn't an ad though
Starting point is 01:12:12 we're not paid by amazon we're paid to be there anything like that we're just talking about the service like it as a hockey fan like i already have prime for like my orders and stuff but now i use the video side of it where i like rarely watch any shows they have you don't watch yellowstone no you know what show you should watch my watch you like it do you like a good like shooter type of show no okay because there's a show called old man and it is awesome you guys have got to watch that show old man i'm gonna watch the hockey okay and that's probably old man is so good it's just trust me on that it's so freaking good yeah and frasier no that's paramount plus i'm kidding um i i have to do uh i i want to uh i want to leave it there because
Starting point is 01:12:54 i don't want to give no i will flip this table steve gets to do his thing so he's very excited about okay there's a couple things in the trailer that we got to see in person and i don't think the uncensored trailer is available publicly but we we got to see it so nylander on the bench in game four that uh stop crying bro this isn't junior with marner so he doesn't say this isn't junior yeah um he says just shoot it or shoot it not sure which stop fucking crying bro and then he says something else and because it's not publicly available i'm not going to tell you what he said it's spicy the other thing so lots of players are featured in this and i think lots of players are going to be excellent i don't know how they're going to be in terms of interviews the mcdavid
Starting point is 01:13:49 clip of him flipping shit in the oilers locker room is so much crazier than the one they showed oh yeah i can't wait to see it and it's not just how good a player he is you could see like just the i i i gotta wonder the fear in the oilers locker room the day-to-day fear of letting down connor mcdavid you feel it i get feel and you don't get that in his post-game interviews but no boy it's an intense moment it's the the the publicly available trailer that i'm not sure has swearing at least not the one i saw that if it sounds like the the editing is funny on that one yeah you have to chop around a lot of f-bombs oh it's so much more intense than what you saw so we already saw nylander and pasta the guy i'm looking forward to the most by far as
Starting point is 01:14:43 conor mcdave and he's gonna have not just like because willie and pastor they're kind of the one episode in this episode one and all that stuff but he's gonna be over the course of a couple episodes mcdavid his journey so that's that's very exciting to see and like just on the conor mcdavid losing his shit part of it we we forget because of how he comes across in interviews that he's one of the greatest in his sport and one thing that's true across all greatness in sports is they are not well adjusted when it comes to competition and winning all of these great athletes are at some other level of competition and they're not being well adjusted to losing and conor mcdavid is that guy oh yeah he's just not that guy publicly but now you get
Starting point is 01:15:25 to see him on the highest stage ever losing it because that is who he truly is behind closed doors and it's really cool for nhl fans to see that i did get a couple tweets from oilers fans and it's a legitimate concern they were worried that it's gonna make him be portrayed as like oh he's this overly emotional guy and he's no no no makes you want to run through a wall makes you want to run through a wall and also the tirade we don't know what game it happened in i'm willing to bet it was one of the first three um and what follows that tirade is they storm back and nearly win the cup yeah like it's he's gonna kill me he's kobe levels of crazy yeah which is great yeah which is what you want i i want to say one quick thing too for any of my race fans uh the guy that
Starting point is 01:16:10 is doing this series is the same guy that did drive to survive and what i loved about him was he stepped up to the podium british guy and he's like there's nobody in this room that knows less about hockey than me and one of the things that that got him you know hooked on this was david pasternak and i think the first interview was with him and he's like the guy's hilarious he's i love him yeah and he's like just so effortlessly funny the pasta is funny he's funny oh my god oh i don't i don't i don't i don't i will say this um you'll see remnants of that from that series and full swing and what else does he do he does try to survive full just try to have full swing in the in the football one too i don't i'm not sure if he did quarterback
Starting point is 01:16:51 okay one more one of you know one of the right right um this guy they did a good job oh yeah they did a good job it was lots of fun that first episode um so we'll leave it there is that fair anything else to cover anything else do more on gary oh what what do you think about what do you think about being in the same room as gary yeah it's not my first time oh no uh i've been in the same room as him before uh he didn't get booed no good for him okay my god do you think you knew he was in the same room as you no not a chance not a chance oh man that's funny all right thanks for the free shrimp gear yeah that's right so let's uh let's do the press conference two in five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar
Starting point is 01:17:45 raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life saving research together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer register today at pmcfwalk.ca the 2026 chevrolet tracks is the stylish suv for those on the move and with the standard chevy safety assist package you have the backup to handle every turn with confidence the 2026 tracks start your build at chevrolet.ca the steve dangle press conference coming out on the sdp vip that you receive late thursday nights slash friday mornings
Starting point is 01:18:42 we're going to kick it off with talking about vince carter uh yes because uh steve dangle was featured on ctv news uh city tv no cp24 how dare you cp2 i'm getting them all confused do you like how city this is super niche toronto uh city city tv news rebranded just to look exactly like cp24 you guys a fan of that rebrand have you noticed that no also our two major broadcasters are tsn and sn yeah yeah well with canada no no thoughts on channels no thoughts on the rebrand at least one of them's red and one of them's blue i mean the city tv rebrand they did city news like this 24 hour clock thing 10 years ago and didn't work they went away from it well they're both having me on to promote my book i think both great i think actually i will say this
Starting point is 01:19:26 i will say this what i am finding interesting in the canadian media space since we're talking about it is how much money rogers is dumping into media and sports and i mean i mean that like you you they just bought the maple leafs they've launched a 24-hour news channel for just toronto when there already is one and um they have bought the warner brothers license and you may not really care about that but the warner brothers license and i know that they were in on the hbo license which ultimately went back to bell uh the that comes with like hgtv and and some of these major cable channels that just farm money just it just sweats out of them they're crazy and so they went they took that license and that's not cheap so it seems like they're getting rogers is getting
Starting point is 01:20:11 ultra competitive in the canadian marketplace and i think they see a gap here because bell is is not doing well financially uh and i think rogers is and you look at what's happening on every in every other aspect i don't know it makes kind of a lot of sense cp24 has cut a lot of staff uh you might have a hole there you might be able to grab some people i don't know make some money good for the little guy good for the little guy yeah exactly anyway uh so yeah and the the vip will kick it off with uh talking about vince carter because steve was on the news talking about it and it's a little it's very contentious debate i like that uh so look out for that if you're a subscriber if you're not get subscribed what are you doing you bum this question comes
Starting point is 01:20:57 from alex.nolan alex writes on our discord what will be the best time of year to read steve's new book at the beginning of the season in the middle of the season or after another eventual collapse i would say uh as soon as it comes out no and but the reason i say that i legitimately believe that it's right at the beginning of the season so everyone's in a hockey mood throughout the year like people tap out like even even some like decently more than casual fans they'll they'll tap out the long season it's november it's january you know and uh it it could be a way to bond with people at your school perhaps or workplace but also leading into christmas like just those listen you're gonna be at family events and you're gonna run out of shit to talk
Starting point is 01:21:48 about right people can only say you're getting so big so many times and also it's kind of weird because you're 23 they shouldn't be saying that anymore uh i think early in the season when it comes out is the best time nice this question comes from hockey boy pete they write hello i started following the leafs hockey during the covid bubble okay keith is the only coach i've ever known and i'd love some quick tips regarding what to look out for with the coaching change once the season starts also will chicago be on the book tour yes i am a chicagoan that chose to for the leafs uh as for chicago unlikely i'm unlikely to leave the country i am undecided about leaving the province so there's your little tease there but yes saskatchewan's kind of closer
Starting point is 01:22:39 to chicago where did saskatchewan come from it's close to chicago probably not saskatchewan unfortunately disrespectful it is disrespectful i'm sorry um for the coaching change um you're going to see a lot. So it's not just Craig Berube. So Berube is, this is, this is speaking very broadly. It's not the most accurate, but like broad strokes, I'm going to try. Berube is there to establish a work ethic as the head coach. He's there to establish an identity. He's there to establish a style. The more X's and O's stuff falls to the assistants. And I think all but one of the assistants are new Mike Van Ryn's there from last year Mark Savard is there to run the power play and if you notice on the first broad uh first broadcast the first game of the preseason
Starting point is 01:23:35 when the Leafs needed a goal late Mark Savard was the one on the marker board drawing up the play it wasn't Craig Berube right so you need a goal there's Mark um Lane Lambert who was the former head coach of the New York Islanders who had very good power plays or sorry had very good penalty kills while he was there uh good penalty kills when he was an assistant as well i think i uh did some research on this he's going to be in charge of stopping the puck now here's the problem uh the least haven't really had a lead to defend yet in this preseason so we haven't seen very much of him so game in game out um when the play is stopped you're going to see a lot of those guys on the marker board craig berube is in charge of making sure everyone's pulling their weight
Starting point is 01:24:22 um the north south style the get your ass on the bench the that's not good enough you got to play faster all the identity stuff that's correct does that make sense yeah adam i completely agree i think you're gonna see so in toronto we like we do really like a tougher team you look at the more popular leafs teams and the more popular leafs players uh toronto likes its warriors and uh And so I think you're going to see this team. How do I explain it? It's not that they haven't been very, very good. They've been very, very good for a long time.
Starting point is 01:25:01 But there have been moments where they've come up short. And I think at very least with this coach, you know how St. Louis played. St. Louis played where they were going to fight you for everything. And I don't mean fist fight. I mean like stick, elbow, push, push, push. Just never, ever let up. So that's been the very interesting thing because Berube was an enforcer
Starting point is 01:25:23 and his blues teams were tough. People think like Ryan Reeves has an automatic spot on his team. No. That's not how the blues played. No. That's not how they were designed. Especially when Petra was there. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:25:35 That's just not how they were designed. They had guys who could eat you like, you know, a Bertuzzo or something like that. But that, you know, his gig was to play defense. Yeah. Right. So he wants lines one through four pairings, one through three. to be able to play hockey and uh i don't think he's going to be terribly patient if a goalie goes on a slump because remember how he won the cup last place oh this guy stops the puck and cup
Starting point is 01:26:01 yeah right yeah um so there it is there it is jesse all right we are going to end today's show with a little sorry nhl headlines i need music i'm gonna make music for uh next time we play this and this headlines all right hold on isolate that go ahead nhl headlines all right okay there was a little higher i went up we'll see what we can do with that one um this is our game where we try and guess the punny headline on nhl.com because they always come with the best punny headline so today's little blurb under the headline is rangers look to finish the job after having the best record in nhl last season adam wild and steve dangle can you guess today's nhl headline rangers look to finish the job after having best record in nhl last season
Starting point is 01:26:59 now boys think of what you do when you have the best record what happens what do they give you I'm going to say the title is Mr. President. No. Think about maybe Dustin Hoffman, Robert Redford. Rain Man? We go back to the 70s. You know, they're the blue shirt boys, but they're really truly older than boys. Blue shirt men?
Starting point is 01:27:30 But the trophy. Blue shirt president's men. All the president's men. all the president there we go well done I don't think anyone's ever got it all the president's got it
Starting point is 01:27:45 I had all the help in the world there you go so today's NHL headline is all the president's men Rangers look to finish the job after having the best record in NHL last season thank you dude way to go we're teaming on that
Starting point is 01:28:00 I did it too that's what you have to say yeah put my name on the group project There you go. There you go. We will see you Friday. S-T-E-P. The Steve Dangle Podcast. Follow the guys on Twitter at Steve underscore Dangle,
