Starting point is 00:03:26 I had a brainwave last night after the game. Whoa, for a Leaf fan, don't get hurt. It's a Mitch Marner brainwave. Oh, yeah, of course it is. because you can't he's living red free mitch marner performs best in the playoffs when he plays for a team called the knights there it is there it is there it is playoff performer in ohl with the knights i gotta give you something for your background for your streams why because well
Starting point is 00:03:57 i was thinking about this you're not gonna we're not gonna just love my my mitch marner knights connection oh no it's incredible okay it's incredible but this i'm gonna oh you're jumping into that i'm gonna yes and you're gonna yes and me i'm yes and okay all right i thought you're just criticizing the studio i'm like i don't know man no because you got a kale mccarr figure in the background well he's down three oh it's not looking good and he's not at 100 so you need some vegas stuff well we don't have a ton of vegas stuff no we don't we gave away all our march stones i was just we'd have billion mark stones i was thinking that it was like what happened to our marches so our stone or eichel oh we gave them we had mark stone with the cup
Starting point is 00:04:33 to perfect yeah they were never ours no they're no giveaways and prizes that's right if you were not aware if you don't watch our watch alongs we always we always have prizes during the playoffs on all of our streams at a book signing that i did in london i got a gift oh you did and the gift was two perfectly preserved london knights popcorn buckets with mitch marner celebrating winning the j ross robertson cup get out in the ohl it's just on top of my fridge in the basement oh okay well now i gotta put it somewhere are you gonna have time to get it to me before game because i think this might be over you know this was an idea i had just now okay yeah because with the games tomorrow night i don't think you're gonna be back down here well nights and five
Starting point is 00:05:16 maybe for game now the vegas here is a photo of mitch marner and matthew kachuk celebrating the 2016 memorial cup matthew kachuk scored the overtime winner oh maybe it was a mem cup and not the jay ross rock okay matthew kachuk scored the overtime winner it was the second goal of the game and that won them the more memorial cup and uh yeah for the london wasn't domey on that team too or was that was he on that team no christian dvorak was for sure he was number 10 i think he's in that picture that's dvorak i'm pretty sure okay yeah yeah but there were some good players on that team man champion mitch wow good for the knights underdog uh program yeah it's a shame they never win more yeah um anyway never get the best players either people forget that matthew and
Starting point is 00:05:58 mitch go way back they do sure do not like american but he's playing for the absolutely everything you know because you come up you play in the best junior hockey league so yeah throwback throwback mitch looks the same by the way he doesn't he hasn't aged at all not a minute this guy a little bit but not not much but mitch is 17 yeah he hit 17 and never changed his face it's gonna be weird because you know some people are old or young forever and then one day they're just old uh and like like some people are young for like a very small minute but then they are old the rest of their lives and it actually works like a steve martin anderson cooper um they've been old patrick stewart patrick stewart been old forever
Starting point is 00:06:38 same age my entire life but you don't ever age once you hit that old spot then you're then you're old yes and then if you hit it at 22 that's good because that means everybody just knows you like that you know what i'm saying that's okay that's your brand absolutely absolutely silver fox or in patrick patrick's case just bald fox bald fox absolutely now um vegas takes a 3-0 stranglehold in this series against colorado let's look at some insane stats just to get us kicked off here um they put this on the broadcast and i just love it it's unfortunate hockey ran it um and it's Avalanche this season, with a multi-goal lead, were 52-0-0. 52?
Starting point is 00:07:17 They had a multi-goal lead in 52 games. They did, and they won them all. 52-0-0. The Vegas Golden Knights, and this is Sinbin. Sinbin was on a bit of a roll last night. Sinbin said, The Golden Knights did not win a single game this season when they trailed by three goals.
Starting point is 00:07:38 the avalanche did not lose a single game in the season when they led by two or more goals uh they won game three by multiple goals this is the vegas golden knights and it's worth mentioning the vegas golden knights won i believe 39 regular season games yeah they were a legitimately mediocre to hockey team and the avalanche won 52 games by multi goals yeah the vegas golden knights only won 39 games they were mediocre to weak um oh salty no they fired their coach don't take it up with me they fired their coach but then everything changed and we all said the same thing they're either about to they had eight games left we all said the same thing they're either about to go oh and eight or eight no they went was it seven and one or seven oh and one
Starting point is 00:08:24 something like that whatever it was didn't lose much here it is and now here they are and there were questions coming out of the first round if i recall it's on tortorella are you gonna are you gonna switch out uh carter hart for aiden hill aiden hill did win a cup in 2023 and he was like no carter hart's my guy and if you're aiden hill you're like what man but carter hart's been the best goalie in these playoffs that is that is that the stats say it and he's been excellent and the thing that they're doing in front of him that i keep talking about is he always saves the first shot the second shots are cleared and that's how he's able to do it and the the thing that there's i think really special about how they're playing most recently is the shot situation in
Starting point is 00:09:05 that they are clearing rebounds but they're not allowing shots to get through to carter heart either they are allowing less than 50 percent of shot attempts to reach the net because how many bodies they have in front which is a very high percentage on after game two jesse granger had the stat um they are only allowing 47.2 percent of shots from the avalanche to get through and that's even higher than what they're allowing against the ducks where it's 45 percent and then in the against the mammoth it was 44 so even if you're getting a bunch of shots with the avalanche dude that's their game right they get into high danger areas and they get the shots but vegas is so good at blocking these shots and clogging up the areas that even if the avalanche are playing
Starting point is 00:09:49 their game they can't execute the final final moments yeah and you know a lot of people are going to focus on the fact that you know the avalanche are so busted like they are nichushkin didn't play the final 22 minutes i think i read um mccarr is not 100 not close to 100 mckinnon i don't even know if he's going to play game four he that watching that go off his knee i felt like i'm like that's got to be just a bruise but then when you think about it those deep bone bruises people miss weeks with god they suck i like i was thinking maybe it was uh again i'm not good at doctor stuff i just have a tiktok account um but like i i i wondered about like drop foot like maybe it was just like i don't even know what that is uh it's like a uh
Starting point is 00:10:36 there's a nerve in your leg and if it gets hit funny you kind of lose control of your leg for like a minute or something a few minutes yeah but then it goes away okay right but it obviously didn't go away which made me go okay that's like bone that's like real important stuff in there and he's potentially screwed and everyone's gonna be like oh well that's lucky that's hockey that's professional sports that's how it goes uh kawaii and the spurs you know before the raptors looked like they were gonna win a championship kawaii gets hurt well they did win but they they well it looked like they were gonna win another one yeah and nope bye-bye and that's that's seemingly what's happened like it's worth mentioning guys that colorado dominated the
Starting point is 00:11:22 first period i think the shots were 17-7 the goal shit oh my god those were three nothing they made me believe for 20 minutes they made me believe i'm like oh they're gonna do this just even having kale back in the lineup seemed to energize them not having to play brent burns in high danger scenarios he's listen his last game against the ducks when mccarr wasn't there renaissance game this guy's getting turn styled yeah he's looking old and you can't have him in the top four you just can't i mean with the salary cap all you're doing is hedging your bets with your lineup right like you can go even throughout but then you have no special components or you can stein some truly special players and the avalanche have some of those and the rub is if you lose
Starting point is 00:12:08 those special players there is no replacing them and there's no contingency plan they've done as well as they could with their contingency uh on their right-handed defenseman they got the oldest player in the league in brent burns who's been pretty good he's been pretty good pretty huge unbelievable um depth of experience i was having a good debate with uh producer hayden like is this guy a hall of famer and then you have malinsky who is a great up-and-coming player but is gonna make young mistakes and get made to look not so great by thomas hurdle and you can criticize the abs for that but it's like the plan is kale mccarr kale mccarr is the plan and if kale mccarr goes down what are you supposed to do about that there's no answer no and no team would with a
Starting point is 00:12:57 player that significant i just think you know when i look at so one of the things that's at play with brent burns is he's like close to 1300 straight games if you include the playoffs which is great but at this age if he's not on that streak load managing a player like that at that age makes a lot more sense and i wonder sometimes like is he tired is there because he's not look he's not coming out well there's a couple of guys in this series for the abs where i think burns has been unfairly because of the macar absence put into positions that he just can't succeed in and then it's like your next fill-in guy is nick blankenberg right like it's not yeah you know it falls off a little bit uh i'm i'm curious about that like is there is it the age factor he's also not fleet
Starting point is 00:13:37 of foot anymore i mean look uh brett kulak handled the puck like a lacrosse ball which is weird for him he was just bouncing all over the place yeah like yeah listen they look nervous they do and you know what in the in the first period jesse one of the guys that i've been really critical of was marty niches and he made a great play to cadre and i was like okay because they moved him off the first line there was nothing happening with that first line on friday night yeah uh niches was dead zoning every puck race down the line get into the gain the vegas zone and then i'm gonna fire a backhand oh i'll just give it to william carlson it's cool uh but jesse liked the first line set up with uh leckanen uh uh landis cog and mckinnon just come back from injury too
Starting point is 00:14:21 yeah sorry but that's in the first period yeah the first period was excellent like there's no complaints about that i think the nature's thing it's so important to point out because yeah he was terrible like in the games one and two he was first two games he was completely useless and then the jack jury shorthanded goal and you're like okay this is how it should be and i forget who I think it was Mark Stone on the postgame with Sean McKenzie. He said that we knew Colorado was going to come out playing so desperate and at this next level of energy because this is the game they need. They're that desperate.
Starting point is 00:14:53 And he said Vegas wasn't ready for that. But then after that intermission, we're like, okay, let's settle in and play our game. And when Vegas is playing their game, Colorado can't hang with them, which is such a surprise. And there's an injury thing going on there. Obviously, Cale's not 100%. him flubbing the puck on the opening draw was such like a kind of a little foreshadowing
Starting point is 00:15:13 like okay kale mccarr is there but that's not kale mccarr barbachev getting a piece of them yeah and so and we knew that that vegas was going to sit back but for them to score all of those goals in the in the second there was a little shocking to me and if if i'm like okay what's the turning moment for this game there after that excellent first period for them it's wedgewood with the most boneheaded decision imaginable yeah yes on on the william carlson goal mitch marner shoots it from the point and wedgewood decides i'm gonna try and pass it with my blocker and save it and direct the puck to the middle of this slot like not even like far out towards the blood just to the slot area and william carlson's there and he just fires it past them and i thought
Starting point is 00:15:59 the hurdle goal was kind of garbage too it was like it's a nice move from hurdle it's a back And the other hand, on the other side, Carter Hart just absorbs pucks. He's a sponge. He's okay with the face-off, whereas it seems like the Avs are trying to... And rebound control's a thing, and it can be very valuable, but against these Golden Knights and the way they're forechecking, every time a puck is redirected by the goalie into the court, the Golden Knights are already all over it.
Starting point is 00:16:23 They're all over every puck carrier. So then you're seeing on the other end, the Avs can't get anything going because every time they fire it and it hits Carter Hart, if he's got a chance to just absorb he does and it shuts the play down and then they're then they're like and then you've got eichel hurdle carlson and dowd to win face-offs for you that's pretty good i like those odds here's the uh wedgewood redirection where he says okay this puck is coming to me mitch marner shot it there from the blue line i'm just gonna save this gonna be an easy save but what if instead i try and pass this puck to somebody like what are you thinking and
Starting point is 00:16:57 it's just right to uh carlson there after they they fumble it there in the slot but to direct a puck directly to the slot it's just you're not using your head here i know and then there's the goal you know allow me to be a hypocrite for a second because like after game one with carolina we had the brandon bussy conversation and like they basically didn't lose with bussy in that well same thing with Wedgwood and Colorado um this goaltender has not been a starting goaltender at any level of hockey since 2018-19 in the AHL I will buy the fatigue argument a hundred percent just there's I don't know if I'm necessarily saying fatigue I guess I am I think it's like not just physical but mental fatigue yes of being a goaltender at that level playing every other
Starting point is 00:17:48 night all these games are every other night and he's never done this before like I don't I don't know if this is fair because like I think Blackwood's a good goalie I think Wedgwood is too but you know I think sometimes when it comes to the playoffs if you have two starters you have none and you know we we've seen that a little no Leafs aren't a good comparable they're not I like I listen blackwood has been a starter in this league and i just wonder i just wonder and now it's too late like it's it's far too late yeah no that was the game you had to get that was the game you had to get um series is over it's far far far too late you might as well play wedge wouldn't you could be justified in either goaltender i mean listen historically it's over uh unless you
Starting point is 00:18:40 do something that has happened less than half a dozen times it is over um that was the game yeah that was the game and when the games are that close and you need them like those are the margins you make one mistake and there's a goal and that'll cost you your entire season and you get sorry you go into the that intermission colorado up three nothing they should be feeling good and immediately they let a goal in and disallowed goal from and it's disallowed and which which we were going to get to because i think it's a good one actually it's actually a good disallowed goal good debate um but they score immediately right away and it's mark stone yep like and who's coming back from the lineup who apparently can't like you could see his mobility like there's a pulled
Starting point is 00:19:21 groin in there for sure at least and he was great last night well if you if he can get to the net he's gonna be fine you can't move him and he did god i love when they show him on the bench because you get a close-up of that monstrosity of a knob on his stick that's a bad knob it's it's mark stones yeah and it works for him what if i was what if my stick looked like a goalies but ugly like it's he's he's like the henrik lundqvist of forward what the hell is that i know it's crazy but it works and and here's the other thing within five minutes it's three two yep like we hadn't hit the five minute mark and it's three two and if you're colorado your confidence is shot at that point when what do you mean we can't hold it for 60 seconds in the first
Starting point is 00:20:06 second period i know i'm a defeatist on account of um you're a leaf fan yes but they score in the first minute i'm like they're coming back and they score to make it three two i'm like they've come back they tied it they're still down a goal but they've tied it so like when how long does it take them to win this thing when it was a bad when yeah when it was three three i was like oh this thing's over i was like i honest i was like i guess it's my job i'll stay up but i was like can i tell you what reminded me of there was a game against edmonton vancouver series in the second round a couple years ago and i forget exactly how it goes so i don't want to pier mcguire this but i remember that there was there was like five minutes remaining and vancouver
Starting point is 00:20:50 scored i think it might have been like brock besser or something right and so it's game five game six or something like that and it's in vancouver and the fans are going nuts and it's three to two or something like that and immediately off the face off leon dry saddle takes it and scores and i remember saying on the stream that is it okay that's a veteran team that just doesn't care like you just you just have that sort of confidence where it doesn't really matter how far ahead you are we're coming and that vegas has that and of course edmonton went all the way to the finals that year and vancouver gave them the toughest the toughest series but uh i think listen guys it's it's going to be vegas in the finals the way they're playing and it's going to be i don't
Starting point is 00:21:31 I don't think you need to preface it with anything, Adam. They're up 3-0. If they win, if they win, and I don't know if it'll be a sweep or not, but if they win the championship, it's going to be Mitch Marner. He was unbelievable last night. He will be the consmith winner. I would give it to Carter Hart. Would you?
Starting point is 00:21:44 Yeah, right now. His numbers are nuts. He's been the difference because they haven't had good goaltending all season long until he came back the second time, I guess. Towards that end of the season in that April range, that last stretch where they had Tortorella in there, and he was a little good he was a little better before that but to me like getting good goaltending here has turned everything around oh yeah i wouldn't give carter hart anything and that
Starting point is 00:22:08 includes an nhl contract like i i listen i know i know what i'm being to this conversation right now i do i understand what the comments are going to be i i can have a sense of humor about mitch marner i i can't have a sense of humor about carter hardy shouldn't be in these playoffs fair enough so i'm not going to go on and on about it yeah it's it's just me saying it and yep but we also have to we have to break down what he plays like yeah no he's great he's performed very well he's here he shouldn't be playing um now dora fayev's goal uh let's bring this up because the the goal was called back but world hockey report had a nice little espn sort of uh screen grab of it and essentially this is a goal that he basically cross-checks this in and immediately
Starting point is 00:22:53 vegas does two things really really well they celebrate it like it went in and which you need to do this told the story many times you must we were in a race you celebrate like you won there's no photo finish in high school sports and number two you can't really tell between the white glove and the white tape if it hits the glove first and then the stick now uh vegas said it was stick it was stick it was stick and that's nice but if you look at this from the side angle it's actually a high stick he cross checks it down so on two counts oh yeah it's a it's not a goal but still funny i've done this twice now so there was the there was the no goal in the buffalo hab series uh jack quinn got rob remember the puck was in the net and we're watching we're watching for
Starting point is 00:23:37 like minutes and minutes oh yeah yeah yeah of reviewer going by is the puck in the net is it but then someone just goes oh yeah but it's goalie interference you go what you watch it again and you're like how did i miss that the first eight nine times that i watched because you're focused on one thing not the other yeah right so this one i'm like is it glove is it stick and then drew just goes in the group chat yeah but it's a high stick and you watch it and you're like oh yeah first watch first yeah no that's clearly high stick whoops never mind i still have to respect vegas for selling the shit out of it oh sold that shit like that was legit i laughed i laughed out loud and you have to do you have to do that yeah yeah these guys that's the only kind
Starting point is 00:24:20 cheating vegas does that i endorse like that that made me laugh it was good i i have to say um the uh the fact too that um you know what what it does too is they're able to work their fans into the game when that's something like that happens because the the fans you know obviously understanding that they're not going to challenge this goal are still pissed off with the refs about it so it galvanizes your fans when you're down three nothing it galvanizes your fans to go ref you suck and you get them into the game and start them going and i'm like that is that's how a veteran team does it man we we missed the funny part of the mark stone uh interview because he because he talked about that he's like well we didn't handle the disallowed goal very well
Starting point is 00:25:00 we didn't handle that very well because then we allowed a shorthanded goal but yeah you know then we got it back on track yeah yeah now marner mitch marner made some comments that i thought were really interesting uh the sentence that sticks out uh is he said we have an older group that just stays patient and stays calm we don't turn on each other and we don't get mad at each other and people are taking that as oh is that a veiled thing at the leafs and i think i don't think it's veiled i think they did turn on each other and got mad at each other we saw it on the bench yeah um who was that guy who yelled wake the fuck up who was that who was was that which one of the those whining babies was so what we're saying is mitch is learning too yes yeah listen
Starting point is 00:25:39 he's growing the this is the thing listen there's no time or space for nuance uh except here this is a safe space for nuance the vegas gold knights have made mitch marner a better player uh he's always been a great player they've made him an even better one um they have a better they clearly have a better culture of what it takes to win clearly well they've won they've won and most of those guys are still how could anyone argue if william carlson jack eichel mark stone shay theodore uh petro's still around the team he's not playing but he's there howden was with that team hill was with that team mcnab was with that team a ton of those guys were with that team um there's clearly that dna there it so that doesn't surprise me at all there's
Starting point is 00:26:33 oh you guys got to leave it alone okay well you first because all everyone wants to do i'm not talking about in context of the leafs i mean this is his first playoff outside of the leafs right and he's doing outstanding work so it's a reasonable assumption that his comment is about his past experience and he's only had past experience with the leafs and by the way i don't take it personally that's exactly what happened we saw that we said that and they denied that but it's clearly what happened yes they clearly have a poor culture which he was a part of and made a lot of money and it would have been killer if he was part of the change of that culture he wasn't capable of doing that and we know that because we saw him very actively not
Starting point is 00:27:14 do that for a very long time he's gone to vegas and it's baked into the pie yeah and he's learned and he's learned and i'd also like to say let's be honest i mean i know vegas won 39 regular season games but you look at this lineup this is far better a far better constructed lineup than anything the leafs ever put on the ice with with marner in it and i think that 24 25 team was the best team best leafs team he played on people talk about the 21 team no no no the team that went toe-to-toe with florida went to the seventh game better defense not that the 24 like the second round team that's 25 24 25 that's that'd be an interesting that's the best team i would i had a better defense they had better power a july or august video of steve doing in a top nine
Starting point is 00:28:00 ranking of the austin matthews teams i think the 23 playoff team was clearly the best one um you think it was better with on defense no chance so here's the problem if you give stallers to the 23 team yeah they may be well if you give stallers to the 25 team maybe they win the series i think the fucker that you think is the best the 24 team i think 25 or sorry 25 team that team i think we now with hindsight know it's propped up too much by goaltending fair i don't think they're as good as they were because of the goaltending that they got and that the craig brube system was always going to die eventually the close you're and you're right i don't think i don't think it would have ever won a stanley cop i don't think uh listen we never have demolished in game
Starting point is 00:28:52 five and game seven it was always here in the brain they were never going to win that series i think ever i think the thing is like toronto's never had and you know listen these guys don't grow on trees toronto's never had a mark stone and people because he's played in vegas so long again tend to underrate william carlson i cannot overstate the change you're hammering in that in the duck series when he came back it was a whole different series and this is a whole different team he's changed the complexity of that team he's a 40 goal scorer who plays a 200 foot game he will play third line he will play second line wherever it wherever hurdles not playing is where carlson will play and stone carlson marner those are your three top penalty killers and by the way
Starting point is 00:29:32 they can all score and that's crazy we don't have we we had ryan o'reilly and eichel's out there too well on the first line yeah no no on uh yeah um we talked about minnesota um especially with erickson eck out not having a response and no brodeen either to and no brodeen but they didn't have a response up the middle nothing to uh mckinnon cadre nelson or mckinnon and waugh and brewery right yeah they didn't have a response to that well vegas has friggin eichel carlson now back from injury uh and hurdle and doubt has been phenomenal doubt's been great what a great pickup but all of a sudden and that gets evened out oh now nate's hurt that gets evened out oh my car's not there now you might not now you might not win a game yeah yeah the margins and and that's that's
Starting point is 00:30:23 what it is so i i just feel like there's there's also that he's playing on a far better constructed team and i'm taking i'm as a leaf and i'm saying i blame our management for that totally i blame our management for that we talked about pivoting in 2021 after the montreal series you can't keep doing this either and either we ran them out of town or we're being homers pick a lane yeah i'm gonna just tell you the the leafs teams were just not this good they were not no and the other thing why why because they were too much money tied up at the top thank you marner is about to win a stanley cup with the highest cap hit anyone's ever had it's crazy it's crazy yeah well listen the the and and good for him i look at the i look at this and i go okay we only screamed it for
Starting point is 00:31:06 several years there's a there's a for sure there's something going on with vegas in terms of their confidence level like it's scary and and you know i wonder now i'm starting to look forward how do they match up against carolina montreal which is a good dovetail into that series steve um you know thursday night was crazy and then saturday night oh jesse did you do something you're missing the bad mgm big story oh i guess we should do that first let's do that and then we'll get into that series sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use
Starting point is 00:31:41 my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and their way around on that is like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper thing and the and the washer thing chemicals you gotta have the right chemicals see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled 700,000 home repairs, 1.5 million moves and counting.

Starting point is 00:33:02 life-saving research together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer register today at pmcfwalk.ca so Montreal Carolina tonight for game three Valeno is in Kapanen is out I think Kapanen's healthy scratched oh so it's Valeno Valeno's in yeah so I don't know how that changed the series but Habs got outplayed uh in game two they did force overtime but then did not get a shot attempt in overtime and is this my question to the panel and to steve to start because you streamed it is this the carolina boa constrictor going ah that's our first that's our first chance here yeah yeah but this is still a very good outcome for montreal after two games in carolina against a team that has not lost right you go back to montreal tied
Starting point is 00:33:55 um carolina has home ice advantage in montreal on account of montreal can't win there none of any of this series makes any sense why not tell me why if i haven't watched a game what am i well they're just two extremely goofy teams i guess carolina being dominant is actually the thing that i understand the easiest right well i don't understand anything about the montreal canadians i don't and i've watched them 16 games now i still don't understand them uh they are a goalie they are really good at breaking up plays um mobile defense mobile oh very mobile mobile defense mobile uh responsible forwards um which this is that's why Kapanen is sitting because he doesn't he's a great player I think he's a very good player he doesn't fit what they're
Starting point is 00:34:44 doing right okay like I'd be I'd be interested well we don't need to put the cart before the horse but like i i do long term there i do wonder about the offseason okay there um in what way does he not fit what's what's going on he's just not responsible enough defensively like and he's 22 yeah he's a very skilled player he's got time to learn maybe that's a guy you keep and develop um but he he doesn't he doesn't match what they're what they're trying to do and san luis obviously doesn't trust him and san luis seems like a coach who's going to be there for a long time that was rod the bod settling everyone down okay we're one in 17 that's stupid that's really stupid guys can we stop with the stupid and they stopped with the stupid they stopped allowing shots they stopped
Starting point is 00:35:33 allowing chances they stopped allowing anything freddy mixed in a save uh and on occasion their shots went in so it's worth noting that uh suzuki versus sebastian ajo was most of game one but Arpen Basu mentioned that Rod Brendamore really took advantage of the second change in game two and rolled out Jordan Stahl's line against Suzuki, Caulfield, and Slipkowski. And that kind of, I mean, that's a line that had, what, combined for six points in game one? So that's, oh yeah, the Habs top line? Yes. And so that's the third line for Carolina, right?
Starting point is 00:36:07 Yeah, that's Stahl, is it Martinuk and Ehlers? Yep. so here's one thing that's been impossible to ignore with cole caulfield you know we've been talking about his lack of production five on five well his whole line's lack of production five on five they obviously get that done in game one he's just so easy to body off the puck in these scenarios like i've that's a really good adjustment why wouldn't you plaster that line what's the point of that line if not to staple them to the other team's top line right let let aho run free let uh stankoven and hall and jackson blake go do their thing and have all kinds of
Starting point is 00:36:52 outrageous fun out there jordan stall i've so i i've i've talked about this before there's players i've met where their height and weight do not properly explain how big they are jordan stalls one of them he's a man mountain he's an absolute gronk and i wouldn't want to be trapped in a seven or sorry four to seven game series with him uh the best defensive defenseman in the world stopped playing like a pumpkin um like keandre miller was great shane goss despair was relevant which he wasn't in game one um i mean what what do you criticize about carolina's game really it's i don't know if it's interesting to come on here and be like they were perfect but like they were as close to perfect as you possibly can be like and yet montreal comes back
Starting point is 00:37:45 yes they were down to nothing they did and i was about to i was about to say in a way that's not repeatable and they've done it for over a month yeah yeah but like they haven't though some nights they're completely dominant and the puck just finds the back of the net effortlessly last night or last night two nights ago was not one of those nights um and they wasted their one good josh anderson game per series they wasted it he's either irrelevant fourth liner uh-huh or there's there's one or two games in a series where he's aggressive liability and then there's one game per series where he's like i'm gonna win the game by myself and he scored two goals yeah guy scored two goals so not repeatable well when you're the second best team the best way to score a goal is
Starting point is 00:38:46 to freaking go to the net because you're not gonna get around carolina any other way you have to go through them and josh anderson's one of the few players one of the few forwards on the habs capable of doing that right so he did that and there's just after game one everyone's handing vegas the cup already including including me right i just we see cinderella every year and every year that's where the phrase comes from it's every year they turn into a pumpkin yeah in in the nhl it's funny cinderella teams don't often win no they don't so mentally i'm like okay even if they get there they're not gonna win just because that's how hockey works and i've seen them be the second best team on the ice too often in these playoffs and then you got carolina who nobody trusts
Starting point is 00:39:40 no one trusts them by the way canes fans when you guys are like oh you keep doubting us i'm like this is where we start to doubt you is this round the third round is where we truly start to doubt and and we've got good reason you're 2 and 17 you're not you're not special for not doubting them by the way you're a fan you're a fan yep your opinion in all this actually is less colored than ours believe it or not i've been burned by the carolina hurricanes many times yes because i'm like i know it's there why couldn't they do it yes it seems like they can do it now you're not special for cheering for your team oh but you don't watch them as close as i do steve okay no but i do happen to get the box scores when they lose the same way every spring
Starting point is 00:40:29 right right you don't need to watch the leafs terribly closely to be like i don't think these guys got it right what wait a second wait a second don't say something so obnoxious oh i know never back that up i know but but no one trusts them yep yep now here's how you change that you cave the habs in last that game game two made me go they might win the cup jesse which is what i've actually thought for most of the playoffs then game one happens and the scenario that we all joked would happen actually honest to god happened and we went oh they're the same old canes game two was them flipping that script jesse what do you have up on screen there i'm curious uh it was the the ot winner uh by eelers because i think this play it kind of it speaks to both sides like i
Starting point is 00:41:25 don't think montreal played too far off of the game that they wanted to play okay because they're never gonna win that shot counter against carolina nobody in the league is gonna win that shot count no one but what they did do effectively was limit the shots uh to where it wasn't too much of an advantage and i know like halfway through that second period it was they only had like four shots on goal montreal did but like carolina the other end had like 12 and i'm like oh you're That's like 12 shots. And then at the end of the day, it's still 26 on the board for Carolina.
Starting point is 00:42:00 I did like that you went to that register too. Because you look at it and you're like, okay, where did Montreal fall short? Because I think defensively, they did a lot of what they wanted. And it was just through the neutral zone of where they, in game one, their breakouts were so unbelievably good.
Starting point is 00:42:19 And every time they're able to execute their breakout perfectly and go down the other way and they're scoreable. And it's like, oh, we'll do this like six times and we'll win. And they did it and they execute perfectly. But here in game two, they weren't quite able to make that breakout. And that's where we get back to the OT winner where Oliver Kapanen, he's at the top of your screen here. If you're watching, he's coming over center ice.
Starting point is 00:42:39 He's receiving a pass that goes off the boards here at the red line, the middle red line. And he goes to play it and they've got to send this puck in deep, go for a change, whatever they got to do. But his goal here is to get this puck deep. and what he does is weakly just kind of bat at the puck he fumbles it right in front of his coach too by the way i'm sure martin san luis saw this a couple times uh afterwards as well you know he saw it live and then they saw it on the film and this play leads to jalen chatfield getting it and they head right up the ice and that leads directly to the eelers goal he has jalen chatfield gets this breakout pass because Kapanen gave it to him on his stick after he wasn't strong on the
Starting point is 00:43:23 puck and Montreal what they did last game was do this play perfectly where it's like okay Carolina had the puck there and then now we got to come through the neutral zone and make something happen offensively really quickly and here Oliver Kapanen is doing the complete opposite meekly slapping at the puck and giving it to the other team that leads directly to the goal we're gonna uh you know give flowers to guys like slave and obviously ehlers i assume we're going to talk about chatfield had a much better game too and uh the habs have gotten great depth performances out of everyone basically all playoff long eric robinson that guy's awesome yeah he's a good player and i referred to him as a kid uh he is 30 year old man um that's 30 year old man worth mentioning uh
Starting point is 00:44:10 just just as an aside jack drury and marty niches have still never won in a conference final oh wow not even a game not even a game oh my well didn't they take one oh no because yeah no they would have been on the house yeah oh wow yeah oh dear um so for montreal like carolina as much as you're you're saying like they got outplayed which they did they did i think the the stat eric angles had was they spent 30 minutes uh carolina did in the offensive zones literally half the game was spent in the offensive zone by carolina which is not how you win a game but they were one bounce away from winning in ot he's martin saint louis is craig berube with more flourish and a better attitude if if that makes sense and better goal scoring yeah well that's
Starting point is 00:44:58 what that's that's what i meant by flourish like like berube is not going to be there in practice and be like try this move like that's just not what he did as a player ever um and also I don't get the impression St. Louis screams at his players as often dude there was a clip of him almost getting completely run over I want to say it was by like Phil Deneau um pre-game like all the guys are like chest bumping and stuff getting each other ready and then St. Louis comes in in his dress shoes he's already probably the shortest among them but now they're all on skates and it just looks like the owner's kid like also those are those are expensive dress shoes you gotta be careful around those knives that they're wearing yes but i would have been more worried for phil
Starting point is 00:45:42 no running into that friggin monster that's true quadzilla yeah he has he's he's got the the lower body sorted out they they have a very patient game yes but carolina outpatiented them yeah and you know you know it's funny last night in the broadcast they said i wonder i think it was he's like i wonder if montreal is going to have to do what buffalo did and stay in a hotel to simulate a road game buffalo lost so i montreal has to do the impossible for a conference final team that has already won two seven game series and that is how to win in their own building crazy yeah i thought carolina definitely got back to the defensive game that we know
Starting point is 00:46:31 that they can play and that's why it was so tough for montreal to break out so it's a matter of can montreal get through that defense when carolina is playing at their best and carolina like offensively just keep up what you're doing because they never need a whole bunch of goals to win these games and how they play and they're gonna get it from the likes of eelers who put up two and I'm sure Taylor Hall will score a goal and Jackson Blake will get in there and whoever they need to execute, they'll find somebody in their lineup every game they do.
Starting point is 00:46:59 They'll find somebody to execute those goals. Can you put your screen on the screen just for a sec? Yeah, the Michigan's bad for hockey, guys. It's a 3-2 playoff game that ended with an overtime winner in the playoffs and the thumbnail for the game recap is a goal Andriy Svechnikov didn't score. People love this shit.
Starting point is 00:47:20 That was one of the most exciting moments of the game. Yep. The building, they're giving him a standing ovation for trying it while the puck's in the defensive zone. I think they like it. God, I wanted him to score it. I want it just for the, come on. Now, Jesse, on the prep sheet,
Starting point is 00:47:37 there's a link at the bottom. And I'm going to read you what this says first because it's en français. But Arp and Basu pointed this out, and I thought this was worth mentioning because when we play the actual clip, because it is a press conference clip. You're going to be able to see
Starting point is 00:47:51 and hear Marty St. Louis be a little miffed. Now, I'm going to try to Julian McKenzie this. And the final question, this is Arpen Bassey writing. Do you want me to do it? To Suzuki about his matchup.
Starting point is 00:48:03 No, no, you've had your French. Let me get my French in. Right? The final question to Suzuki about his matchup and the final question to St. Louis, St. Louis,
Starting point is 00:48:12 St. Louis, Marty St. Louis. Right. Was asked by the most French name I've ever heard in my life, which is Guillaume La France. François.
Starting point is 00:48:21 That's pretty good. Guillaume Lafrancois of La Presse. Okay. It's going great. The question to St. Louis about this was how he was rolling his lines in anticipation of a long overtime. Adam, le question.
Starting point is 00:48:33 Le question. I don't know, but why are you asking me that? Marty St. Louis responded. To which Lafrancois correctly pointed out St. Louis had his fourth line of Oliver Kapanen, which Jesse pointed out, Zach Bolduc, and Kirby Dock on the ice when Ehlers scored the overtime winner.
Starting point is 00:48:49 say louis responded with yes they were there and with that say louis got up and left the news conference he was not happy so jesse pointed out one hap on that goal who was it captain he ain't playing yeah he's done joe valeno let's go so and we got to play this clip just so you can see it we can't use this photo oh for god's for anybody wondering out there the reason why we don't play certain things from the playoffs is because during the playoffs they go to podiums specifically for the stanley cup final and the nhl also simulcasts it so it's their video and unlike other channels we don't show other footage because we do get striked uh by these networks because we're not just like an independent youtube channel we're also competing in the hockey space with these
Starting point is 00:49:35 other networks so they do strike us when they own the footage so that's why we don't especially a particular canadian one because we like to monetize our content and make money off of it and when they we use their footage they actually make the money off of it so i've been in the comments who's new here and real and is noticing us not use more footage in the playoffs that's why well you can go watch it then it starts at 8 11 yeah here put it on the screen because it's annoying because it's like they're mocking us because like we can't show this clip meanwhile behind martin st louis it says great clips oh you guys are just showing off wow that's it would have been a great clip would have been a great clip yeah by the way it's so bizarre it was very good in this country
Starting point is 00:50:14 fair use rules should apply here and yet they don't i don't understand it but it's true jesse you're right thank you dude i watch john boy all the time and i'm like where does he get the rights for all this shit oh wait he has a partnership with the well the nlb baseball but yeah but like he was showing like he was showing like uh college softball in a clip i saw this morning well like cool because they're smart leagues who wouldn't want john boy talking about their shit yeah it's a little different there's a little more nuance than us just yelling here anyway i want to yell uh it's worth it's worth looking up so yeah uh kapanen out valeno in that's sorry what i was gonna say about kapanen is you know a lot a lot of teams construct their lines like all right how
Starting point is 00:50:54 do we make the deadliest line how do we oh yeah i like your chemistry together yeah it's not how the habs do it the habs go what lines can i trust you're all grown-ups you're all pretty good at hockey i trust you to score goals if the opportunity arises can i trust you out there he can last game he could trust 11 forwards the 12th is sitting right and it's a kid it's a rookie i'm not hammering the guy but it might work for other teams that's how you operate though you have to do yeah it doesn't it doesn't work forward you're out it doesn't work here like that's when when you talk about like regular season versus playoff like you can get away with that shit during the 82 game regular season and you can get your cookies and it doesn't work
Starting point is 00:51:42 in the playoffs nope it does not now uh anything else on this series before i move on to just news what happens tonight games played puck drop probably 807 they're gonna fake drop it though They're going to fake drop it. Anthem's going to be loud as hell. Someone's going to carry out the torch. Yes. Is it too early to go price? Yes.
Starting point is 00:52:12 Yeah? Yeah. You're saving carry. I think it'd be cool if they had MPP do it. Coming off. That's the answer. Coming off the Walter Cup. That's the answer.
Starting point is 00:52:23 I think you're right. Jesse has the answer. And the parade, it was just confirmed, is going to be Sunday this week, too. How about Tuesday? Oh, is it Tuesday? Yeah, Julian said it was Tuesday. Oh, okay, never mind.
Starting point is 00:52:36 It says Radio Canada confirms Mayor of Montreal that the Montreal Victoire Parade will happen Saturday. We were both wrong. Oh, Julian, you're giving out bad info on the DJ show. Sorry, Julian, I'm a hussy. Yeah, no. Can she hold the trophy and the torch at the same time? Hell yeah, she can.
Starting point is 00:52:53 Hell yeah. I don't know. I don't know. if anybody can it's her no she's just gonna no knowing her she's just gonna stoically mona lisa smile hold the torch and the building is gonna lose their freaking mind i want her smoking a cigar while she does it though kind of like because they were they were doing the victory cigars i'm like come out just just fucking ripping us it'd be funny if she did it and then they like gave her they like charged her with like a fee like a fire department yeah like smoking
Starting point is 00:53:22 no smoking inside that would be very felipe that would be very they would fire that off like knowing quebec you're fired they handed her a ticket you're fired and also we're deporting you to ontario yeah hey we wouldn't mind that on the scepters that'd be all right yeah um no not her um listen oh the other person that's the correct answer uh what happens in this game habs are going to get far more shots they do know how to turn it on but again if you get into a derby with these guys it's not going to work and you know what uh we forgot to mention with game two because i hammered carolina for this uh in game one they were way harder to play against yeah oh way harder i'm sorry to keep this going adam but i wanted to hear both of your thoughts
Starting point is 00:54:09 on Dobish's antics because he's taken quite a number of penalties these playoffs and the interference call, I think, was the right call and more so
Starting point is 00:54:19 like the refs being like, stop. And he's selling a lot of shit too. He's got to be careful. I think, you know what, I think that's partially,
Starting point is 00:54:25 first off, the guy's got a personality and I never, ever, ever want to get rid of that. Like, I loved his answer to Kyle Bukowskis' questions
Starting point is 00:54:32 like, hey, you know, after game seven, how are you feeling? He's like, oh, I could play 40 more of these.
Starting point is 00:54:35 That, I would run through a wall to hear that from one of my team and he brings that to the ice yes but i think maturity wise where he's got to grow is picking your spots you got to pick your spots it can't be it can't be that every time and i you know uh ron hextall was a master and i know it was different ref game back then but he was a master at the refs are looking down the ice i'm gonna smash my stick into the back of your legs just for or and you know what he would do too he would dig his stick down between your thigh and
Starting point is 00:55:04 the back of his back of a skate yeah and he would also hammer nails through the paddle of yeah but that that kind of stuff like the the interference call that that just i think bx has said it a few weeks ago on hockey night in canada he said sometimes you're like man just let us do that and we'll we'll we need you to play to stop the puck we'll do that and i get that there's got to be a happy medium there but i think yeah it becomes it could become a thing right this is where his fourth penalty like what are we doing here this is where nick suzuki earns his money martin san luis earns his money philip denot earns his money and i'm gonna say like it should come from a defenseman too like to bx's point this this is where mike matheson i think earns his money
Starting point is 00:55:48 you you gotta let him know hey man let us handle that but a large part of me is screaming you don't put a saddle on a mustang no no no no you gotta control he's not i don't know he's nuts and i love it he's nuts and i love it steve you got me kind of amped up now yeah you don't put a saddle on a mustang come on well he is right don't be right you're you're probably screaming ole while this is happening if that well i mean but if i play jesse you gotta root for my team right if that play leads especially that one guy with the twitter account with a hat god damn it i don't know who that is he's fucking me in the fan base is what he is yeah he keeps clipping shit he probably realized i can get engaged he clipped you know what's so funny he clipped uh ehlers
Starting point is 00:56:39 overtime winner and he posted it no one gave a fuck uh yeah no one cared narrative man no one cared anybody that listens to this show knows we've done this forever because the leafs never get past round one or i guess last year round two so you've been doing this for years it just happens that montreal was in this year steve's not a lead fan are you a dumbass so i the the don't don't the saddle thing is funny don't put a saddle on a mustang like maybe this is just how he's got to play on tilt to be his best and this is what you got to take the four penalties to have him playing at his best you can you can here's the thing he should do it but he's got to be like brad marchand smart about not getting called brad marchand is the best i i will fuck
Starting point is 00:57:22 you up and i'll never get a call whatever brad marchand does dobish needs to study that tape there was the one play where it definitely looked like he tripped was his feshnikov in the crease he like grabbed his oh yeah it was pretty down that was not called yeah he got away with that one and and just to make i was about to say to get habs fans back on my side really all i'm doing is getting both fan bases mad at me taylor hall dirty player like not just dirty play like dirty player yeah um i like him he's a great story he's fun dirty player and it's always the knees some guys have a specialty and his is the knees and habs are lucky that lane hudson is a-okay all right let's move on to some other stuff here there's one more controversy are we allowed
Starting point is 00:58:13 because texier speared keandra mill in the nuts and we didn't mention that and the refs literally made up a rule okay let's go they fabricated they called it slashing texas spears keandra miller in the nuts like you watch the video he spears him in the nuts there is if you call spearing on the ice there's no minor penalty for spearing it's a major you can't give somebody two minutes you have to give them a major and then if somebody's injured which i don't know you get speared in the nuts you're probably injured then you have to give them the game misconduct as well for spearing so the refs decided we don't want it's the playoffs we don't want to give them a major penalty let's give him two for slashing which this is not slashing no and then i was like
Starting point is 00:58:55 oh the league is gonna have to double down on this when they find him because they're gonna have to find him for slashing instead of spearing they didn't find him no what do you the league steve he speared keandre miller in the nuts like okay okay ridiculous guys we do have to move on to other things here so let's okay let's i got it but we gotta get going here no one including haps fans should be okay with refs and the league making things up this is objectively made up nonsense and made up fairy tale that they went to the video review and after watching the video decided to still lie to everybody is ridiculous yeah here here here here can i reenact it yeah all right so that's the end of the reenactment
Starting point is 00:59:49 that's all they did yep that's all that no they're liars it was garrett rank and i can't remember the other one they they lied they lied the weather is finally warming up so steve and jesse that means it's time for shorts this is where my butt's going i love the details on the shorts so i'm holding up blue shorts right now yeah uh blue khaki shorts and these are chubby shorts by the way yes chubby shorts my bad yeah um and on the buttons they've inscribed the weekend has arrived and it's written around all the buttons the details fantastic they have any buttons that say time to go look for some birds i would like that uh chubby swim trunks have been uh described as incredibly stylish and comfortable so comfortable in fact that it feels illegal we're
Starting point is 01:00:34 talking stylish prints that you won't want to take off lightweight fabric steve lift that up is it lightweight to you oh my gosh it's like i'm holding nothing at all and they feel real good in your hands and on your buttocks which is what they're covering it's good now you want to check out chubbies we want to help you out it's summertime time for you to get some new shorts now whether you're getting dressed up for your work day a workout or your summer vacation chubbies has you covered for a limited time chubbies is giving our viewers 20 off when you order with the code SDP at chubbiesshorts.com. Starting point is 01:01:19 Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer. That's why every step and dollar raised matters. On September 19th, join thousands in Toronto for the Princess Margaret Cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer register today at pmcfwalk.ca i got a question for you i want to move to the nba a little bit because we're just just a real and then we will have other hockey stuff but i want to know what you think about this sure adam silver said uh over the weekend he issued a quote strong threat to nba teams that consider tanking saying the league has the power to do more than just issue
Starting point is 01:02:07 fines he said we can actually take away draft lottery balls and we could change the order of the draft now i i have to ask in a cap scenario which the nba does not have a hard cap you can uh how are teams supposed to get if you're not a free agent destination how are teams supposed to get these best players uh making a trade with the clippers okay other than that um oh you got now i don't know you got to draft these guys yes and i got a question about this honestly if you're selling wins or you're selling homes which hope which is pro sports why do teams have an issue with tanking because eventually that team is going to be good if they play it right unless you know the sabers for 14 years i bet they're really upset okc tank i think it because
Starting point is 01:02:56 it makes the games unwatchable like towards the end of the nba season the games were unwatchable because some of the teams were just so bad and you don't want the product to be that bad and i while i understand that and i agree with that the other side of it is it's a cap leak and and the nhl is the same it's a cap league in fact the nhl's cap is far more restrictive so at a certain point it makes monetary sense for this to happen i think in a cap world you have to accept that some teams are just going to tank they're just going to be bad and that's what it is and they have to like what are you are you going to are you going to find a team for selling their own assets here's what i don't understand about adam silver is this the top priority we need to be talking
Starting point is 01:03:40 about right now in the nba no but it's an easy one for him why like who has because the thing we should be talking about is the clippers still with the kawaii stuff anything ever happened in government where you're like who asked for this who voted for this what like that's kind of happening right now who asked for this is what i'm wondering like i don't know if it must be the owners feel that way some of the owners must feel that way not the tanking ones not the tanking ones but they're they are in the minority oh so the other ones are way the ratings are down they've got rights deals coming up they're not down because of tanking they're down because the product sucks because of the tanking they'll argue they're down because the league mvp oh boy
Starting point is 01:04:20 i'm about to lose my passport for this is one of the most disgraceful floppers i've ever laid eyes on wow you're going at SGA like that Adam it's humiliating the worse than Embiid not worse than Embiid Jesse didn't do you agree Embiid has done it for longer and is also far larger but SGA is flopping on every every you think I'm exaggerating Adam it's every shot it's every fight he's a champion yeah but he's a champion oh right now might be the greatest time to be a cheater in the history of sports look who's at the head of everything oklahoma city thunder the dodgers and vegas is about to win this thing after florida it's a great time to be a cheater the flopping is what i'm interested in but also the the clipper kawaii stuff that they've done
Starting point is 01:05:27 nothing about fuck off stop with this fake tough guy shit jesse you're not gonna do shit what do you think about what do you think about uh sga is he is he a generational flopper like steve is saying i don't have a heart take on that you don't have a heart take it do you think that the teams because whatever the nba does the nhl does like five years later do you think that that's good for the health of the league because part of this part of what's been a feature of this season in the nhl is the turnover the tanking teams you know san jose had a better season anaheim had a great season you have teams montreal buffalo coming in in the east right you have philadelphia even for god's sakes right you have teams that were sort of in the either mushy middle or they were in the bottoming out
Starting point is 01:06:08 stage and now they've come on and they're going to be like i look at this colorado vegas series and i go yeah you too but not for much longer there's going to be other teams that supplant those teams in the next couple of years that their their run at the top is coming to an end that's what a salary cap is for well that's what i'm saying though yeah so how do you say well this team is tanking but this team's doing it ethically like the leafs were ethical tankers brube tried the whole damn time they just sucked with gms i'm often like what do you do all day and adam silver i'm like you can relax actually like do less i see i see i see what you're doing all day and knock it off you're solving a problem no one asks you to fix who cares okay to me to me
Starting point is 01:06:53 it's not i'm not like i'm not less interested in the nba than i was a few years ago because of tanking right the product's not as good as it was unless victor wambinyama is on my tv and then i'm not turning it off ever for a moment don't talk to me during commercial breaks when he's on my tv okay all right uh i think at its height the nba product is still incredible oh yeah like on what was it monday and tuesday those two games the two game ones like so that was some of the best basketball i've ever watched the spurs okc game one and the uh the knicks 30 point comeback or 23 point comeback whatever it was but the reason that i think they're so upset with the tanking situation is is the that's the product right because there was a day in april early april
Starting point is 01:07:45 where they had a friday night and five of the nine games that friday were decided by 30 points or more oh that's bad their product became unwatchable and there was uh it was like the second time in this era of like 25 years that there was a night where the average margin of victory on a night where there was like 10 or more teams playing or nine nine or more teams nine more games being played that the um the margin of victory was 22 points or more and the second time this was the second time it happened and the previous time it happened was three nights before oh my god wow okay all right it's much more of a problem in the nba than it would be in the nhl then totally and i think the idea like the initial starting point of the conversation about like okay you the only
Starting point is 01:08:31 way to get generational talent is through the draft that's just factual you know you can't trade for victor women yama uh at any point until he's already in the league and he's already established to get him young to get him into the league you need to get him through the draft but i think they're trying to convince these teams that you have to try and be better through other ways than the draft because we're not going to guarantee that you can do it anymore so they're trying to kind of reinvent the way you collect your assets to be a good the way to do that has already been figured out by the way it's the per the team with the most points after they've been eliminated from the playoffs gets the first overall so the pwhl way absolutely yeah that's
Starting point is 01:09:10 what should happen they do so you get eliminated from the playoffs if you're the first one eliminated that means you get the best chance at it but you're probably the shittiest team buy it if you're in last place buy it the devil absolutely wouldn't that make things interesting it'd be kind of fun it's so much better than what the nhl and nba having have right now yeah it's called the gold plan yeah so i figure out that you get an actual i love that i will say uh uh last place basketball is harder to watch than last place hockey yes and i think that's a real issue that's a huge issue like last place hockey i don't know you might win you can turn on a game and see the 24 sharks beat a team yeah again and their name was the toronto maple leafs in toronto maybe
Starting point is 01:09:50 there's a big save yeah you're getting out shot to oblivion maybe there's a big hit maybe there's a fight where's you know watching your team lose by 30 yeah exhausting yeah and the three point like the the three point revolution has changed that a lot yeah it seems to just jacking up threes all day and if they're going in against a really bad team the scores get to the these egregious points and they never had that before in basketball got it no okay so i don't know it's a very complicated complicated conversation i think he is doing too much yeah like say the other sit on your hands for a little bit here the other thing is the tanking problem in basketball so like i will concede this because i'm like oh this isn't a problem now i'm thinking about it more i'm
Starting point is 01:10:32 like it's not like in hockey where you trade guys like there is some of that it's like i'm gonna take our star player out of the game for no good reason or like this guy's just not gonna play tonight yeah and it's not even like oh he's injured or whatever it's uh i'm gonna inexplicably in a tight game take our star player out and only play him like 35 minutes yeah like the wizards they traded for trey young and never played him because he's injured you know like they don't want to win games yeah it's not load did the raptors do that with uh with uh bi too brandon ingram he got traded here and didn't play until the next season although i guess he was actually injured yeah he just never even played again yeah right like i'm talking about a conceivably
Starting point is 01:11:19 healthy player and they're like come off have a seat okay bad basketball is harder to watch than bad hawk two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer. Starting point is 01:11:58 Clutch Canadians presented by Moosehead Canadian Lager. We do this on Fridays and people always have a, hey, how come you didn't pick this guy? What about this guy? What about this guy? Steve even picked a coach last week, which I thought was great too. Here's the thing. This is your chance to tell us who you think should be featured
Starting point is 01:12:14 on the segment. We're talking about Clutch Canadians. Canadians, not Montreal Canadians, but it can be Montreal Canadians, but other teams too listen moosehead is the last major canadian brewery still owned by canadians it's done here it's brewed here it's packaged here it's shipped here moosehead is what you need to check out in the playoffs actually all year round and we want to know who you think we should be featuring so leave your comments in the comment section both today and wednesday show so we can feature your favorite player for our 100 clutch canadians presented by moosehead canadian lager segment on
Starting point is 01:12:45 friday yes jesse blake where's mitch marner from uh he's from toronto i think in manana no you're not gonna do that maybe i'll just pick him for the rest of the playoff oh honestly you could yeah i'd probably be right yeah most clutch player going um the i will get to some leaf stuff in a second but uh worth mentioning at the world championships uh the latvians beat the americans uh four to two sandus vilmanis uh gets two empty netters because they were uh it was real close at the end latvia had a two to one lead from dennis smirnovs everybody's name ends with an s in latvia yes uh kachuk uh set up matthew olivier to cut the lead to one again so then sandus vilmanis had to score again so it was a 4-2 final that's pretty big for the defending olympic champions
Starting point is 01:13:34 come on well i don't know why they but like i think part of the north american perception of uh the world hockey championships is the way it's treated by its programs canadian players treat the world championships as kind of take it or leave it but like not sydney crosby well this they still sent like a team where you're like oh okay yeah there's quite a few guys like i would expect them to win have you seen the american roster no i actually haven't i haven't looked into it maybe i should why'd they go not a lot of guys wanted to go like no like if you're not going to take it seriously don't go bring up the roster adam alex steves is on the roster good for him so they're currently leading the hungary team six three it's in the third period
Starting point is 01:14:28 How the fuck did you allow three? Do you know the Hungarian men's team? I don't think you understand what we're talking about. Sorry, you've never heard of Ben Stibitz? As we're recording at 6-3 in the third period. So they're going to pick up another victory here. But yeah, to go through the team, Joseph Walsh and Nett, Ryan Lindgren, Justin Falk, Oliver Moore, Matt Coronado, Matthew Kachuk are line one. So those are the forwards.
Starting point is 01:14:54 And they do it funny. they list the full lines like the five guys out there so that's their first line the one thing about double ihf everything is they let you friggin know you're reading double ihf yeah they're just exhausting about everything is isaac howard james haggins alex steves will borgen mason lorai so okay alex steves this is again this is the american hockey team and i know it's the world championship this is the american hockey team steves was not an everyday bruin Higgins just got called up from junior and Isaac Howard was spent most of the season in the minors okay line three is Matthew Olivier, Max Sasson, Paul Cotter, Connor Clifton, and Wyatt Kaiser
Starting point is 01:15:39 all guys Olivier's a stud certainly people uh and then the fourth line hey Ryan Leonard ryan leonard one of their best players novak max plant and ryan ufko am i saying that correctly that's i don't know who that is i don't know who he plays for and and max plant is um i believe the brother of zam plant who drew and i ran into at the airport um on his way to get drafted there you go he's a pred and sam lafferty's there too form relief oh yeah and then sam lafferty's the extra forward uh don granato the head coach sam lafferty's on the american hockey team i know like this is what i'm saying ryan ufko i don't know i'm definitely not saying that right played 18 games for the president of the season had two goals how many american olympians are on the same
Starting point is 01:16:33 one kachuk what are we doing that's it yeah like i i know you don't have anything to prove i mean you're the olympic champions but man you just don't give a shit eh like but do we is that bad like we think you should care we should we think they should care yeah every time you have the chance to play this is a thing hockey needs to get wise to every time you have a chance to play internationally it's you're representing your country now i understand guys being in the playoffs and hey you had a long season you played the olympics i get it on this year but if that looks that roster looks like that next year when there's just an all-star game and there's no tournament or something like that i'm gonna be like guys this is your country you gotta you gotta
Starting point is 01:17:16 represent treat the tournament like it's a tournament you can win and not a training camp like i understand this is a great experience for these young guys and some of them are maybe the future of the program like that's just not treating the tournament with respect and that falls on usa hockey yeah you gotta get people out yeah i guess from the top down they have to treat it with more respect and work on this a little harder to get the players out there but i'm sure they had a hard time selling that because they won the gold medal they're like what well you want us to sell this i don't think so so they just punt on it but could chuck went could chuck went late yeah but he went think is because of his baby he did have a kid yeah he's a new dad so he gets it he gets it uh
Starting point is 01:17:58 uh now with when it comes to the leafs there's a couple of things first off max domey uh there was a uh pr put out a pr statement put out by the leafs this morning uh that he had some complications arising from off-season surgery we knew he was injured this year uh we never knew what we never knew what and we still don't but they said there was complications he'll be re-evaluated re-evaluated at the start of training camp no other details and to me that strikes as that's not that's really not good that they're announcing that now they could have waited till september to talk about this but they're telling us that now which tells me this is serious so we wish him the very very best yeah um and uh you know that that is a that's like a for the leafs to say that that's a major
Starting point is 01:18:44 statement yeah yeah like there were some mutterings about like oh you know here's the leafs you know not saying what it is again but i don't know this struck me as kind of serious this is serious i'm not really willing to say that yeah this seemed more than just like ah strained calf yeah like i feel yeah slight groin tear i don't know i don't know what it is no nobody does and if we did we probably wouldn't say anything but i feel like in this particular instance it makes sense so wishing max domey the very very best and adds another kind of wrinkle to their off-season plans because now they don't know if a winger that plays in their top six is going to be there and that that is going to be interesting for john shika two and five canadians will hear the words

Again, shopify.com slash sdp that's shopify.com slash sdp it was reported by elliot friedman on 32 thoughts this morning that uh they had their first zoom call with um uh austin matthews uh and that things went good no reason he didn't go and rip the camera out of the wall no he didn't and the call he didn't oh did he start have any trouble setting up the zoom was it did he have any boomer things was like i can't hear you the audio they didn't say the airpods the quality is not that great they didn't say one way or the other i've been given details no just just things
Starting point is 01:21:39 were positive that's all we know and last thing easton cowan game five it's a five game series marley's monsters easton cowan with 12 seconds to go the game is tied and he scores dude this goal rocks please go watch we should like link to it vinny i know i i i one of those days i wish we had ahl highlight rights vinny letary is the guy that sets him up by the way no you're not giving it to vinny so quillen sets up the play from behind the net okay letary tries to get the one-timer off yeah he fans on the shot but the fanning on the shot leads to an absolutely perfect pass to Easton Cowan. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:22:24 Who scores? And now they're off to, is this the third round? They're going to the conference finals. Let's go. Against the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins. Kyle Dubas. That's Jason Betts and Kyle Dubas. Let's go. So yeah, I'm excited for them. That's cool. And you know what? Kyle Dubas against the team that Kyle Dubas built.
Starting point is 01:22:40 That's right. 100%. I think there's a, I think there's something cool about the fact that Easton Cowan is getting that kind of playoff too. like he's been a dog for them in the playoffs will villeneuve's the other guy that people need to pay attention to like i know he got buried by berube um but i think he's going to play some hockey and if you're looking for a replacement for a simone benoit or philip myers type player which i feel bad putting them in the same conversation because simone ben was so much
Starting point is 01:23:06 better than philip myers was last year but if you need a puck moving third pairing defenseman will villeneuve's your guy well he was why are we overthinking this he was like the 13th defenseman they tried yeah like they tried their best not to try it Mermis got in Thrun got in uh uh uh I'm forgetting some of their names friggin Rafai got in after that injury yeah so many guys got in before he even got a sniff in the final games of the season and now look at him I get why Shika said we're going in a new direction when you look at shit like that you can't like like Berube did them zero favors this year in terms of you know down the stretch playing younger guys to see what you have like people are like oh i'm excited to see what will villeneuve could be in the fall i'm
Starting point is 01:23:53 like you could already know you could already kind of know that when it comes to a young defenseman we always talk about like defensive uh defensive um inefficiencies or gaffes deficiencies i should say yeah and sure he has that um or he might have that um why don't we ever talk about offensive deficiencies this defenseman cannot move the puck so we can't do the things that we need to do we we undervalue how much of a impediment that is i think like roman listen everybody loved roman polak great guy could not move a puck out of this you could get away with that shit in the 90s you can't get away with that now um i also want to throw this out there on on that thing and i was thinking about easton cowan randomly on the drive home last night you know i think his greatest
Starting point is 01:24:37 accomplishment this season is outside of that goal what surviving berube he ended the season this is a guy that berube loved right but he hates young players hates him and and he doesn't have to tell me that i know by his actions and not only did cowan spend a lot of it on the fourth line then get scratched a billion times despite the fact that he was absolutely a player that should not have been scratched he ended the season in the top six and productively so yeah play no games during the olympic break which i think is an organizational unforgivable sin this is these guys honestly like they did everything they could to stop easton cowan from having a successful rookie campaign and if you look at his numbers they're not sterling they're not amazing he had
Starting point is 01:25:22 some really bad giveaways and things like that but i gotta say he survived an organization that really was like we're not helping you yeah and and i know you're our first round pick on our best prospect but we are not only are we not helping you we're gonna work against you uh and he survived that so whoever the coach is that comes in next i think is going to get a guy who is resilient and who seems to be somewhat clutch which is nice if you look at uh some of the reviews of easton cowan in his game like there are still like even in the ahl like he's not playing the greatest but i'm glad he's a getting this deep playoff experience at the professional level he already got it in junior um and also he's getting to play games under a not craig
Starting point is 01:26:07 baruba coach john gruden's coaching him i don't know the differences in style necessarily but scoring a goal like that has to do wonders for your confidence and you can't do that when a you're not playing and b you don't make the freaking playoffs yeah so this is awesome steven dangle yes i did not realize how much of the decor i guess i just forgot how much of the decor is locked up for next season for the toronto i i'm glad you're going here troy stetcher is a ufa yes and villeneuve is an rfa those are the only contracts coming off the books out of riley McCabe Tanev OEL Carlo Benoit Myers so Adam you were mentioning Myers is locked up yeah Myers is locked up next year so Adam you were talking about like okay we need Benoit Myers replacements
Starting point is 01:26:58 they're still on the team right so I don't mind Benoit 135 like totally none of the contracts are agrees it's just that they're under contract yeah so I'm just curious I guess to the two of you gentlemen are you making trades off of the decor and all of these guys under contract what do you do and who are you moving off the deep so eventually you're gonna have to but the question is who i morgan riley is the obvious one i think he gets traded everybody thinks that he's gonna get traded i think he gets traded i don't know for what i don't think you're getting much back just remove the cap hit that's a win then you've got tenev and mccabe together as your defensive shutdown pair right you've got ben danford probably at least attempting to make the team
Starting point is 01:27:41 although he's going to play a lot in the ahl this year right he's doing well and he's doing well he jumped right in um you're hoping that brandon carlo has a rebound and then you can just trade him geez it'd be hard for him not to um but listen let's let's look at what okay so what's the rumor logan stanley's gonna be ufa this year logan stanley is gonna make a fortune if you think if you think what brandon carlo makes is too much at 3.485 or oliver eckman larson at 3.5 logan stanley will make more money than those guys on a long-term deal so what the leafs have going for them here guys is yes they have a lot of trade protection on that roster i grant you but you've got efficient contracts brandon carlo making 3.485 million dollars as a six foot seven
Starting point is 01:28:24 right shot defenseman guys timothy friggin lilligren just got a two-year extension at 3.25 million dollars i'm sorry that's not brandon carlo's gonna be that's a contract people are gonna want even if he plays for third third pairing minutes you're gonna think adam's coping here he's right those are absolutely right deals no they're in a good they're in a good they just don't have the high-end talent i think worst case scenario with philip myers you wave him and he either plays he's gonna pass through no he's in the marlies or i think he might get claimed i would even i would even look at he's right-handed like yeah somebody will take somebody will take what's troy stetcher want i don't do you is that like is that a good result for myers you just give
Starting point is 01:29:04 him away well but like you saw the way he played who's giving up assets for him yeah you're not giving him a full-time spot you're not if John Chayka got like an unconditional draft pick in like 200th overall for that player I'd be like I changed my mind on everything I've ever said about him he's great you're going to Wendy's again he's unbelievable I'm going to straight to wendy's and getting a chickenator uh and like oel at 3.5 i'm oh man he's 34 i'm still at the point i think he should cost someone a fortune he's a he's got game dude he does i think he should either cost a fortune or you keep him i agree at 3.5 who else supposed to move the puck the the cap hits you know what's going to be interesting is how many
Starting point is 01:30:01 guys who could barely make this decor are going to end up making more yep lots stanley was a i'm giving you an example logan stanley yeah who's uh imperfect player uh to say the least but he's big and he shoots right oh the ages do scare me a little yes yeah yes everybody's in their early to mid 30s which is why i probably don't bring stetcher back it depends on the i mean if you probably if you bring stetcher back and he's playing most of the time with the marlies you don't care if i can bring stetcher back for what villanova's making all right not villain i'm sorry if i can bring stetcher back for what myers is making lovely or benoit like i don't know if you go to one i think there's a little bit of recalibration with the salary cap going up
Starting point is 01:30:50 that a 1.3 or a 1.2 or one is more like the 900 grand you're probably not wrong righties are so hard so like who do they have organizationally who's a righty they got danford they got villain of who else do they have back there oh matt benning he's a ufa i know i know i know that they didn't use he's not an option toby namala oh is borghese here scroll down borghese shoots right and hayes hundley shoots right those are two college signings what what did what is uh keith pelly call him vinnie borghini i love that you just knew that hey what about just call him oh no sorry i was gonna say some italian slurs like just he should have just i can't believe we're not giving him enough shit that he called him vinnie borghini yeah
Starting point is 01:31:43 johnny pasta yeah here's fucking uh hockey here's fucking garlic fingers yeah so uh i'm really proud we signed hockey spaghetti over here i can't believe he called him vinnie berghini oh yeah so so yeah i think like when i look at when i look at this like obviously there's a lot of there's no high-end talent let's just call it what it is but the top three guys like i'm assuming morgan riley's gone because he is gone guys uh and people are like oh he's got a no trade clause no guys f off you're very you're very confident you're new to this like nobody's ever waived a no trade in their entire fucking life i can see him on the team starting you know what jesse you know what i'm gonna say something really unpopular i could see him being good again under the right
Starting point is 01:32:29 head coach being useful on the leafs not seven and a half million useful on the leafs yes but if morgan riley's playing 18 minutes a night in a second pairing role on a team that plays a little bit more like how the team is built i could see that working okay why can't that team be the least it it can be it's just a question i think i think both sides are primed for a i get that he's played almost a thousand games sometimes it's just over he's the longest serving leaf he's been through everything everything everything you've been through steve morgan riley has shared that experience with you he's been with the leafs longer than this has been a podcast dude yeah what he's been with the leafs longer than this has been a podcast that's insane
Starting point is 01:33:08 that's insane that's what I'm saying like I do think he will go elsewhere and be useful will he be 7.5 million useful no and the problem with the Leafs is they never put him in a position except for that couple of years even even then they'd be like oh well here you go here's Ron Hainsey um for that for that couple of years he got like 60 70 points they were putting him in positions on the power play to succeed but they never found him a defensive partner and at a certain point i think it's on mo that nobody worked with him oh my yes like so there was that one quick run with brandon carlo at the end of you know a season and a half ago where they actually their numbers exploded together they were great there were two times they put them with big dudes
Starting point is 01:33:49 who do nothing luke shen and brandon carlo it worked and it worked those are the only two d partners he ever won a series with and usually when you have a player making seven and a half million dollars when that contract was signed i know it's different now they make the players around them better right and i unfortunately never saw that with mo and i know there are guys that will say oh well you're wrong and that's stupid and whatever the the goal with morgan or riley was always to find him a partner that made him better i never heard hey morgan riley needs to make his partner better never heard that so very true but you know the the stuff that we've heard about uh i'm not even gonna pick up the phone if john jake oh they're picking up the fucking phone
Starting point is 01:34:30 okay so you're gonna be okay uh okay let me let me look all right here's a third line or here's a third pair defenseman who's available what do they want 14 million dollars or i could call john and give up like a third for Morgan Morgan I wasn't even talking about Morgan like just anyone else let's give you this Morgan Riley becomes a free agent today I think he still earns that I think you're probably right and you look at like let's say what's Logan Staley gonna make four and a half five I think he makes it I think he gets the Doroff's contract no six he's a free agent six million dollars free agent no one's available oh man yeah morgan man he definitely asks for it yeah and then someone gives it to him that's why i think tuck's gonna get like 10
Starting point is 01:35:26 million or like 11 million in columbus you're not wrong because they because someone like columbus because they're the team who's like listen we know you don't want to come here but here's 11 million dollars and they go shit wasn't it boone jenner that's kind of pissed because they haven't offered him i think boone jenner's probably out in columbus so then maybe that's the replacement a bunch of guys have let go of their agent and not all of it i've been able to confirm boone jenner was one of them was he not yeah um so that's that's gonna be a fascinating there's gonna be a lot of movement man a lot of trades i think there has to be i almost wonder if a bunch of how do you not look at texier and go like alexander texier how do you not look at
Starting point is 01:36:11 that and go you know what i want out of my current deal the blues were it didn't work he throws his deal in the garbage he was great in the regular season with montreal he's been very effective for them in the playoffs is he is he a free agent coming up that guy's gonna make millions of dollars yeah he's been a good player for them by the way carry a2 they just got that guy for free yes for justin barron because they were smart enough to call the worst general manager in the league oh boy boy boy boy boy boy here since i hope john chica does that i know we're wrapping up but like there's a little bit here we we didn't um get to this earlier everyone's talking about like oh vegas and they got this guy this way and this guy this way and obviously
Starting point is 01:37:00 marner oh the leafs just let him go go and look at the ivan barbachev trade oh it's rough it's a rough trade they're about to win their second cup with that guy for zach dean who's a so someone goes yeah it was zach dean in a first right zach dean was the first he was supposed to be something he's not panned out yeah but it's doug armstrong's partially fault yeah that he's not totally let's be honest they should have won more than they did that blues team and not keeping petrangelo and that some of the stuff that got it's crazy his mismanagement of them should be studied and given all that money to bennington and you know what i mean like just whoo is not great wasn't the ryan o'reilly trade with the leafs also not great uh there was a chari and
Starting point is 01:37:48 riley and they tried the leafs tried to get barbachev in that deal too yeah oh my god that would have been so good but they got two firsts for him are they not leafs not give up a two firsts or like the chari as well uh chari was good they all so at that deadline the barbachev one they did the ryan o'reilly trade and they also did the tarasenko trade they oh my god they traded tarasenko and micola to the rangers for sammy blay and look at what and hunter skinner do you know and look what's done in florida yeah oh my god and two conditional draft how so how did micola end up in florida i gotta know uh i'd have to go okay never mind okay probably a ufa at the end of that but i don't know if that trade deadline was the best for
Starting point is 01:38:31 dog what was the toronto trade uh hold on uh i do have the o'reilly trade there you go read that uh it was achari what traded from the blues to the toronto maple east for adam goddett mikhail abramov a first round pick which turned into auto stenberg a third round pick your eye bakarchik uh and a second round pick uh lucas fisher and then minnesota did a uh that's not great they did a salary thing did they not yeah so i don't think hockey db is showing the full trade it was a three-team deal and toronto gave a fourth round pick or to minnesota for that i hate that they're showing that as two completely separate deals you should get beat up for that
Starting point is 01:39:21 yeah you should that's not what happened this is just the toronto graphic from back is this the no i know they should get beat up that's a very dubious era graphic fucking instagram graphic what's wrong with you what ever happened to mikhail abramov uh if you have to ask nothing good he is in the khl there you go if you have to ask nothing i'd say a lot of swings and misses on that duck arm strong trade deadline. I would agree with that. Those guys might turn up, but
Starting point is 01:39:54 also have not. Oh, no. Abramov. Abramov. Excuse me. Yeah, no. That's crazy. All right. Well, listen, we will be back on Wednesday. Steve tonight with the stream tomorrow night. It's going to be me again for game four. There was a lot of brooms
