just showing steve a video of victor e rat from uh from the florida panthers uh getting his grind on with one of the fans there sounds like things are good in florida yeah yeah you know they're having fun that's a video yeah never seen carlton quite get into that no is he doing a parody of kodak black i no no because uh no this is uh this grinding adam is showing us his butt to butt yeah it's it's very pg it's pg but oh okay okay yeah i thought he was recreating kodak black's fame infamous moment in fl live arena no i don't know if the panthers want to parody that all you told me was that somebody in florida was grinding at a panthers game and that's the first thing that jumps to my mind jesse i think that's a fair point um and it's weird that the panthers

never bring that up they never mention it why do they never make one of the greatest moments in panthers history it could be it's a top tsn top 10 for sure if they go back to the cup final this year it's in to drop the ceremonial puck kodak black the panthers actually had a couple moments last season with just fans and press boxes because who was the golfer? It wasn't Bryson. I want to say it was DeChambeau, but it wasn't DeChambeau. He's just leading the Masters, so he's on my mind. But

who was the golfer who had the pylon and he called Ekblad a pylon? Yeah. Where did he get a pylon? Yeah. Golfer Panthers. Pylon golfer. Burk Hapka. Yeah. He's a fucking traffic

cone. Where did he get this? what like i've been to the leafs press box a bunch of times and i'm trying to think of all the different steps i would have to go through to get a traffic cone up to those boxes but i'm also not brooks kapka yeah i wonder how much stuff you're allowed to do just based on your brooks kapka look at that is he is he he's a rangers fan i'm assuming then no he's a he's a panthers he is a guy that's the reason he's so passionate like steve yelling at the leafs and being angry at the Leafs comes from, I love this team so much. Brooks Koepka is a

huge Panthers fan, and that's why he's there yelling at Ekblad, calling him a pylon. I thank you for reminding me of that. And he ended up apologizing and it was all good by the end of it. No, because we talked about it on the show and we were like, oh, maybe they're friends?

And then Ekblad spoke on it and we're like, oh, they're not friends, actually. And then I think they became friends. but this is a fan being a fan and i love that yeah i mean you know not everyone gets such large props but not everyone has the ability to hold a bylaw in an arena and be cool with it but i mean the best ones are where you're like where the hell did you get that like the guy with the waffles yeah yeah or the guy all-timer the the leaf fan that was banned for life for throwing toast on the ice because they needed to wake up and smell breakfast when they were really bad this is a year

this is 2010 and i remember there at the end of the season a guy threw toast on the ice and it was toasted oh yeah i remember that and then banned for life and people are like why are you banning it for life they are bad do you know the leafs were so bad for so long that there are food items that were thrown on the ice that i forgot about yeah and that was yeah i thought it was just waffles and i'm like oh wait yeah there was a toast guy toast guy a bunch of jersey guys there was of all the things that uh fans make fun of the leafs for that uh uh get brought up no one it's amazing what happens pre uh like internet 2.0 that people don't remember there was a game where the leafs had a lead it was like i want to say a multi-goal lead they blew it late

a fan immediately after the other team tied the game had a heart attack in the stance oh so you know people they're always tweeting to me oh steve something's gonna oh his head's gonna explode that happened to a guy he lived and i believe they won the game that's cool but i like that that's the only reason i'm telling the story no it's but that is a real thing that happened you can look it up um yeah so uh i didn't expect to start with victory rat but that was the uh the conversation starter because that's what i saw as soon as jesse hit the intro button i was like wow that's victory at rat and he's having a time what are you on where you're watching mascots grinding it's a bleacher report okay yeah just i don't know what kind of search notifications adam

wilds got set yeah where it's just hey listen friday morning gotta watch my mascot grinding videos i'm furry and so are they adam just saying just saying um i did i here's what i really wanted to start the show with um the the shohei otani stuff i just want to just talk numbers for a second nuts so uh it pay miss uhara who was shohei otani's interpreter the numbers in terms of how much money he spent came out and the it's it's just unbelievable so um please read these because to me that's not even the craziest thing that came up bob well the john hayman tweet is the craziest tweet that came out but we'll get to that uh bob not nightingale about 19 000 bets were placed the average cost of each bet now i'm not saying that these bets were ever this number

but this is the average cost 12 800 like you do a t the average so that you have a two dollar steve bet yeah mitzi uh i'm sorry ipe mizuhara's average bet ipe mizuhara there you go um would be 12 800 almost 13 grand total losing bets 189.2 million total winnings 142.2 million 40 million uh net losses which is unbelievable he stole more than four times what we originally thought we thought it was four million bucks actually it's 16 million and apparently he was able to change the settings and i don't know how this is possible i apparently there was there's there's rumors about um him calling the bank and pretending to be shohei otani what and like saying like oh i need this and i need it wired here which is crazy too i didn't even know you could do that but yes 16

million from otani's bank account to pay gambling debts according to a federal criminal complaint so what is going on in the united states like we just covered this on a vip episode some lady goes i need 50 000 and i can't tell you why like remember that yeah or no or the guy that was like create a piece of art get it insured for 50 grand and then take that what is going on yeah the uh uh now i would imagine that a lot of this money was his but the stolen money from otani's bank account was to cover his losses and then came the texts oh from the bookie what where where the guy he's texting with someone and he's like ah you didn't even steal it and then what ep ep ep mizuhara ep mizuhara goes uh well technically i did steal he wrote it dead to rights and we which you got

to think even as a legal bookie that's got to make you feel a little scared oh oh yeah that's well the scariest text i saw was was it sounds like mizuhara was ducking someone i don't know who and then they were like hey how come you're not answering my messages by the way uh our friend that they didn't say shohei but it's very obvious that it's shohei is out walking his dog oh which like we got eyes on him like the friggin sopranos dude it's crazy it's a crazy story stuff um john hayman uh because it also came out that there was no evidence seized by the government of any bets on baseball john hayman said he showed good restraint i which i think is him trolling he has to be kidding he must be kidding it is surprising it is surprising like i'll steal

money from my friend but i certainly wouldn't want i draw the line at listen i'm not pete rose guys yeah i have some scruples it's crazy dude it's a completely wild story yeah yeah so i i wanted to talk about that jesse when you when you saw those numbers as somebody who bets from time to time are they just like they must be they're eye-watering and the idea like if you only saw the winnings number you'd be like wow he did pretty well yeah well well we'll get gambling anyway like that yeah it's not the case it clearly speaks to somebody who has an extreme addiction like 22 bets a day isn't like crazy like on an nfl sunday if you have a bunch of prop bets and everything you can get like you can get 22 bets in a in a day like that's not too bad but doing it

every single day and to that amount of money you keep losing you keep asking the bookie for more money like it's clearly somebody has an extreme addiction and some of this i look at it and i'm like okay it's awful we know mizuhara had all these problems and he went into this amount of debt but i'm like at some point the guy who handed over the keys to his entire life to this individual needs to be culpable for something here well interesting well why do you say that okay yeah because they elaborate and there were absolutely no safety checks on shohei otani's part in that And not even any safety checks by people around him. So the way I understood it from all of the reports from the FBI that came out, everything in Shohei Ohtani's life was done through Mizuhara. And not even to the point like just his business side, in terms of just everyday life stuff in America, he did it through him. And even his agent and the agency that Ohtani is signed to didn't have a Japanese interpreter on staff.

Like nobody in the entire building spoke Japanese. Nobody who ran any of his bank accounts could do anything. And no one in his life was there besides Mizuhara if he needed something from Japanese to English or vice versa. You have one of the biggest athletes on the planet. Get a couple people who know Japanese. you have a billion dollars at stake and you ran everything through one guy now that that is uh that opens you up to risk well now now listen uh i hear that story and i'm like shohei i would like to hear answers and questions um but do you know have you ever heard the story

of dane cook and his half brother yes i don't know his his half brother was his agent yes and this guy stoley mcstole stole so much money from dane cook um to the point where i think they the story i remember hearing was i think he was on the tom segura podcast they raided his house there were frozen containers of tomato sauce in the freezer and when you thawed out the tomato sauce there were giant plastic bags of cash that's awesome and awesome that sounds like something out of a show it does that sounds like a great baking a breaking bad uh scene yeah like it's so cartoonish that you can't even believe it yeah that's that's why it's awesome so found it in the walls and dude it's crazy and you would think like how did dane cook not know about this

he didn't he didn't and a lot of it is like he'll just never get it um yeah nor it is they've been ordered to pay back 12 million dollars they admitted to stealing this is what they admitted into stealing who it's his half brother and his sister-in-law so literally like and it's not a stepbrother it's a half brother so your parent is the same and then oh you're talking about the dane cook thing yeah sorry sorry and this happened from the early 90s until 1998 and i don't think they found out about it until 2010 so like it's a crazy and that's when dane was sort of on the rise right making the most money he was making yeah if i remember correct like all of his peak dame cook money like just stolen it's gone and so he had to go on these huge arena tours and to

make it all up that's why he did the new york the madison square garden show and stuff he had a moment dame cook had a moment absolutely had a moment yeah people don't you don't have to like him but a lot of people did for a little while there yeah absolutely um on of the leafs last night i uh i don't mind i don't mind dame cook i don't have a problem this is like a vip episode yeah yeah um i honored the leafs last night which is not like the vip episode we do other things um i want to talk about uh a couple of things first off guys out of 10 how much do you care that this likely puts the leafs out of home ice advantage contention by losing this game how much do you care out of 10 give me a number two jesse i i'd be a little higher on that because this was

entirely in their hands they owned home ice if they simply won the games that they could win and i look at that and i say okay you want to see guys when they when it's just it's up to you you are self-determined if you want home ice or not and you want to see them go out and get that and they did not do that in a game they probably should have won what number do you give so i'll give it a six out of ten c plus you're not wrong jesse you're you're not at all um but like we agree that like they need to rest guys and like even if they won last night like there's a solid chance they lose the next three games but we didn't even get to that opportunity you know they blew it they blew it in the game where everybody was playing like nobody rested and

matthews was on and it was great and it's just entirely defensive mislaps yeah yeah and and a bad goaltending performance and i think we need to be able to say that oh dude it was his worst game since coming back and it's okay to have an off game but we have to say it and and it's funny because i tweeted this last night i think the last three games new jersey and toronto have made and and it's because new jersey's not been good this year but toronto's like doubled them up in shots and jake allen has stood on his head and yeah and he wasn't great last night but he made the saves that he had to make what a weird stylistic matchup like yeah it's the last three games and i'm pretty sure wool played the first two yes and it wasn't great no so like what the hell's going

on yeah no i know and and i i look at the and we'll get to the matthews goals trust me but i i think as a leaf fan uh it's okay if you're upset it's okay if you don't like when they win or when they lose if you like when if you don't like when they win i don't know what to tell you it's not 2015 anymore um it's uh it's it's okay but it's also perspective and and one of the things that might give you some some heart although it's applying regular season the playoffs is that the Leafs have won 24 games on the road this year which is a franchise record by two so they've never won this many games on the road their home record has not been the greatest this year I don't know if that matters comes playoff but at the same time you kind of go okay you lost the game I'm

with Jesse on on one thing not only was home ice advantage within your grasp here winning this game was within your grasp yes the entire way and and so so starting with the fact that the vibes were great as soon as matthews puts his goal 67 totally and then even better when he puts goal 68 oh just max domi disgusting what and that's who i want to talk about because i liked what max domi did to nemich even though he's 23 listen you play in the nhl 20 he's 20 oh he's 20 okay listen uh devils fans i'm not sure if you know this but you can play in the nhl from the time that you're 18 if you're in the nhl then the nhl rules apply and if you go after a star of a team you're probably not used to this from the leafs you can't be faulted for that but that's not going to fly anymore also

what's curtis mcdermott there for exactly and he was running around last night he had nobody to go head-to-head with him he what it was weird like there was no heavyweight to fight him but then the devils have no middleweight yes they like again i'll say it like that's got to be this who's softer in the nhl the national hockey league who's softer there's a few teams that are pretty soft like i can't really think of like chicago chicago's not that hard that's not even guys who will go i guess like not even fair though they're not great but like they'll go yeah like the devils are somewhat competitive right i'm trying to think of like who will fight on the who will fight on the sharks again not fair exactly yeah like out of teams who

are vaguely in playoff contention they've got to be it right i don't think vancouver's that hard but they are skilled guys who will go nah jt miller is a physical player yeah they got guys but it's jt miller he's not a heavyweight is he a middleweight yeah he'd have a good middleweight bout okay all right um tyler myers could get into a fight based on is large is tall has big wingspan is Zdorov yeah okay oh yeah Zdorov right that's not fair they're right they got to be in the conversation of softest team in the league they went out and they got one of the bigger heavyweights but they still don't have a middleweight and I I I believe Max Domi that there was a quote that came out of this he goes uh yeah whoever it was uh on the devils who hit

Austin I didn't like that that's not him dismissing Simon Nemech as oh yeah this player sucks he's obviously going to be an incredible star um in this league i earnestly don't think he knew or cared who it was it's just you can't touch austin and i'm sorry you can't you can't hate that thought process right and and i think that would be the same as if somebody went after jack hughes right i think it's it's it has to it actually has to be that way right and the refs are never going to call it so you have to do that and for the home ice advantage conversation 2020 they had home ice advantage they lost the one thing i want to say wait wait oh sorry 2021 they had home ice advantage they lost they lost 2022 they had home ice uh did they have home ice advantage against

tampa the first time yeah they did did they yeah because game seven was in toronto that goal that wasn't allowed and they lost last year they won with home ice advantage and went one and five at home like I don't think it matters so so with the Max Domi conversation what was so interesting was when the reason I brought up Nemech and got sidetracked because I do that I'm sorry is that when Max Domi was sent off for his 10-minute misconduct the issue became who's going to play with Matthews and immediately of course as a coach you put Marner in there I don't hate that I think it looked good but I don't think it looked electric the way that matthews and domi looked have been looking lately and it's because they've built that chemistry up

over 20 games the only thing i i think i would have changed there um from what keith did is um marner tavaris mcmahon i think is going to be a line or at very least marner is going to play with tavaris matthews is sniffing nylander sniffing let him sniff let him sniff together yeah put those two out burt i don't care who the left winger is put the two guys who are sniffing for a milestone out together knee lander was freaking fantastic last night he just couldn't buy one yeah yeah my opinion so so what that does is it sort of takes the you know the the bertuzzi domi matthews line which was on fire early in the game out of the game for 15 minutes of gameplay right and so as much as i'm not gonna i i will always support what max domi did there i

think it was the right thing to do it did sort of allow the devils to come in and and do some things and neutralize i think the leafs they had the opportunities but i don't think five on five they looked quite as strong without domi matthews bertuzzi together i agree the penalty kill killed them what is with the leafs penalty it's bad well it was getting better and last night was the first time they allowed three power play goals in a period since october 10th 2015 is that good well that was the year they finished last on purpose to get austin so in a way we should celebrate that game um i pulled up the rosters from give it to me give it to me so first of all it was against the senators uh clark macarthur and eric carlson uh were on the ottawa senators at the time uh

Mark Archibelo was a Leaf. Brad Boyes was a Leaf. He had an assist in that game. Arca Beauty. Arca Beauty. The four Leaf goal scorers were Daniel Winnick, Joffrey Lupo, Peter Holland, and Tyler Bozak. I'm trying to find the defensemen.

Morgan Riley, who would have been pretty young, Roman Polak, Dion Phaneuf, Marty Marincin, Matt Hunwick, and Jake Gardner. A lot of those guys would be there for the early runs. Dude. Marty Marincin was there for six more years. For some reason, I've seen some highlights recently from Matthew's rookie year,

and there's all these people on the ice where I was like, there's no way you actually played with Austin Matthews. There was such a weird transition period from the old era to the Matthews-Rotter-Nylander era. Like that photo of, there's like a preseason game or something where Nylander and Phil Kessel are on the ice together in Leaf uniform.

I don't remember that. Yep, it's a thing. I don't remember that at all. There was a graphic making its way around Twitter, I think, yesterday. And it had the Leafs starting lineup from the playoffs in 2018-19. And this is when Kadri was still on the roster. And I had forgotten that not only was... First off, Babs was really mad about them getting Jake Muzzin

because he didn't shoot the right way that Babs wanted to. So what does he do? He plays him with Nikita Zaitsev. I completely forgot they overlapped. I had too. completely and it's just we forgot and and the third line was actually interesting it was marlo cadre nylander damn which like i think would be a good third line today nylander and cadre are so good that it would make up for marlo being like two years retired yeah exactly holy yeah it's uh

it was there was the four forward group was stacked the defense looks thin yeah real thin um with matthew's 67th goal last night he is up to 367 goals total by the way but with his 67th goal he passed dave keon uh he is now in the top three in goals scored in maple leaf's history uh behind daryl sitler and matt sundin if he stays healthy next year and scores at this rate it's likely by the end of the season he's passed matt sundin matt sundin is at 420 uh uh matthews is at 367 360 so he could be it's gonna be close gonna be close i mean he's gonna pass it long before he turns 30 which is yep stupid but i think it's important if we go through and i've done this before games played total by all the players in the top five matt sundin played 981

games as a leaf wow 420 goals daryl sitler 844 games 389 look matthews i'll hold that at the end dave keon 1062 we had 365 goals and ron ellis uh 1034 actually and 332 goals matthews has played 559 games it's in an outrageous just an outrageous oh what a mutant yeah just he's an alien so gentlemen yes uh i asked you about how much you cared about the leafs losing last night i got a two and a six from steven from jesse out of 10 how much did it matter to you about goals 67 and 68 getting on the board with three games less on the on the scale of 10 14 okay jesse yeah yeah because he could wrap it up nice and early now now when matthews hit 60 a couple years ago he entered the second last game of the season on a saturday night against

detroit with two goals to go tomorrow three games left in the season saturday night against detroit two goals to go don't let me down austin come on buddy come on buddy get 70 and then he might not even have to make the road trip to florida yeah it'd be nice to see him just finish it off so we don't have to have the debate about resting him or not yes that's that's the whole thing and same with willie like he's been kind of snake bitten trying to reach 100 points there and it'd be nice if he could just clean it up and get 100 and we don't have to worry about anything. That line's playing so well. Oh, the Robertson

goal that was disallowed, for God's sake. Well, it's his own fault. Stay onside. It is his own fault, but he's offside by a friggin' nose. I don't know. I hated it. The other guy I just wanted to praise because I don't

think I did in the LFR and this would make three straight games where I think he's like dynamite. Man, earlier in the season, I didn't think holmberg was an everyday player i'm not i'm not done with matthew i love him you love him yeah okay but not as much as matthews okay i just want to keep on matthews for one more second because i got another stat to throw at you guys hit me matthews in the second period scored his 274th even strength goal he is now the leading even strength goal score of in toronto

maple leafs history that's so dumb that's so stupid like so we got matthews at 274 sunday 273 key on 269 and alice at 269 you know what i would like to know and we couldn't look this right now i think it'd be too hard when um when sundine played i want to know what percent of league-wide goals were power play goals versus now it feels like it's easier to it has to be easier to score at five on five now uh goals are not up this year in the nhl no no they're not cj was talking about it on the show the other day he said we've had crazy individual performances but goal scoring has either been down or flat so here's what producer drew brought up to me yesterday and i didn't want to put it in the lfr because i'm i'm gonna save it um for now

you're gonna save it for right now i'm gonna save it for right now no like i'm gonna it's it's for when the season's done sure um years ago i wrote an article about the best era adjusted goal scoring seasons of all time um wayne gretzky scored 92 it goes down to like 60 something because of how stupidly high that era was uh brett hall has a couple years in the 70s ovechkin had i think the second best era adjusted goal scoring season ever when he scored 65 it adjusts up to 72 if matthews finishes with 70 actual goals will it adjust up or down and will it be will it end up as potentially the greatest era adjusted goal scoring season ever we'll have to find out we'll have to find out i i haven't looked into it by the way your your blog is still up at sportsnet

60 plus goal season yeah he might hit 70 by the end of the year yeah does that mean austin matthews has never had a 50 goal season and why are you asking this because you're difficult best of they asked it on twitter yeah and i just wanted to know and why would they ask that because you think a four goal game doesn't count as a hat trick because a hat trick is a three goal game right yes so like and this comes from baseball because if you hit for the cycle it's first second third and home run but if you get two seconds a third and a home run that's not hitting for the cycle even though it's better when you when a home run is when you go to home right and you don't get a triple along the way i think when you land on three goals at the end of the game

you get your hat trick when you land on four you get something else i am saying by the definition of the word of hat trick that is i ended a game with three goals so jesse isn't austin matthews now or has he ever been a 50 goal scorer yeah he's he's scored uh 50 goals before yeah yes he's never finished a season with 50 he's never that how how do you want to detail do you want to get into this definition i want to get detail never finished the season with 50 goals so is austin matthews a 50 goal score uh he's never finished a season with 50 goals so no that's how i would answer the question he's finished the season in the 60s he's finished he's gonna finish in the 70s he's finished in the 40s he's never finished in the 50s so is austin matthews

a 50 goal score he's never finished in the 50s steven yes what are your thoughts on jesse's i mean it's difficult to argue he is yeah he is right austin has never finished in the 50s is it is it now can we say that a player that finished above 60 goals was a 50 goal score see like the way you're asking is because there are 60 on austin's first goal the first game ever in the national hockey league he scores four goals right yeah he does not end with a hat trick but in that game he had three goals right so if we were just talking if there was a if there was a name for scoring 50 goals in a season if we called it a kalunk full oh we called it a kalunk full okay i like that and we said if you if you score 50 within the 50s in a season you get a kalunk full

okay and then austin matthews would not have that because he passed it and he got 60 so he would not have that kalonk folk okay jesse if he hits 70 is it a warm chocolate it is no it is i think that is yes and if he hits 80 do i have bad friends uh i believe i believe the swedish listeners told us that that's not how you say yes yes they told us that nearly right away and then we played it on the show you get for that information i don't know where you got that from you saw some sign you're like i'm gonna say for the rest of my life and it's not true also there was a bunch of people drinking garlic beer and i asked william lagason about it on agent provocateur he's like i've never heard of that in my entire life no he's like that might be for the four there's or what i'm like

they've been split up Nylander's been a bit snake bitten and McMahon has been a bit quiet and Tavares got two goals last night he was great yeah but like why is Marner not the guy uh driving his own mind uh i don't a hundred percent know that he can better than willie okay now there are attributes and that's not an insult by it's not it's i mean dude they're both elite they're both elite someone someone posted um like over the last three years here are the top cumulative scores and willie and marner i think are both top 15 like they're both elites uh especially in terms of offense. Um, Marner, I think can play a little deeper in the lineup. Um, just how he plays defensively. He's, he's, he's maybe a more well-rounded player than Willie. Um, Willie,

I think, uh, has better line driving ability and Marner. The problem with playmakers is you need guys who can finish. Um, and you're putting, let's, let's swap Marner and Willie. now he's playing with uh uh who was it last night robertson he can finish sure can robertson and holmberg though that's the line or yarn croak it's a small line and yarn croak and holmberg okay like i just don't like it nearly as much like you saw how you lit up when i was like yarn croak holmberg willie you were like oh and then you have marner with tavaris which we also know works by the way yes absolutely i like marner as an elite playmaker willie is too but like i think we can agree marner's the best in that regard marner the elite playmaker with two dynamic

They go away in the number of infractions called and not the amount of penalties called.

You've talked about this in the past, Steve. The percentage. Yes, Jesse, thank you for bringing this up. It's it's the number one straw man gaslighting argument that comes up every spring. And let me nip this in the butter right now before it even friggin starts. okay people will go actually penalties go up in the fart no when the playoffs start it's just murder time everyone murders everyone and the penalties go up because the amount of attempted murder goes up like significantly and steeply also the playoffs love a good coincidental minor

and they love a good um taking two guys out of a scrum and going both of you sit in timeout and a good uh like meaningless penalty at the end of the game so with all that being said i think the idea that the leafs suck on the penalty kill but the playoffs are coming up so they won't have to be on the penalty kill a whole bunch that's not a great argument for like it's okay that they suck no i think it's no i think it's actually concerning that it is they are so weak on the penalty currently on the season they sit 25th in league ranking on the penalty kill 76.9 which puts them in the vicinity of teams like columbus arizona san jose montreal chicago who are all around them in the penalty kill department so were any of those playoff teams that you just

mentioned no the only one who's like right next to them at the bottom they're 24th in the league in penalty kill nashville predators um really yeah which is very surprising but yeah as if i just list them on 22 winnipeg as well which is also a little surprising but they're the worst playoff bound team in terms of penalty kill wow yes in terms of penalty kill the worst one in the league except for the new york islanders who are dead last um are they actually but yeah The Islanders are dead last in penalty kill? The Islanders are dead last in penalty kill. 71.6%.

That's wild. What? Let me just read off the bottom teams. We'll go from 21 down. 21, Chicago. 22, Winnipeg. 23, Montreal. 24, Nashville.

25, Toronto. 26, Columbus. 27, Arizona. 28, San Jose. 29, Ottawa. 30, Minnesota. 31, Anaheim. 32, the Islanders.

and they're wow they're a full percentage worse than anaheim holy the islanders are yeah yeah they're like bad by a country mile that's how they kill dude i can't believe that like at least the leafs are within arm's reach of like basically every team you just mentioned um like they could have a hot three games to end the season and pass like potentially get out of the bottom uh 10 or whatever yeah probably not be a little tough probably not but they're gonna finish somewhere in the 22 to 25 range the Toronto Maple Leafs will impound the kill,

which isn't great. And if we wanted to just stay on the Islanders for a little bit, they're on a six game winning streak, which is going to get them to the playoffs. They're probably the third team

in the Metro Metro, which is egregious to the way the the NHL sets up their playoff format. But Pittsburgh may never lose again, though. Yeah, so we'll see how that goes. But so watch out for the Islanders

and their sucky penalty kill in the playoffs. But the Leafs being in the territory of you've just listed off the teams right below them, columbus arizona san jose ottawa not great no not great now they're tied to the penalty kill conversation is uh something that they talked about in the interview yesterday uh interview

intermission yesterday uh elliot freeman and nick kiprios both agreed that their top six defensemen for toronto would be riley labushkin benoit mccabe edmondson lilligren i like it and the the main person not there because of this the penalty kill is tj brody which justin bourne had on the bottom pair with edmondson on the right instead of lilligran and i didn't hate his argument his argument like we have this idea of lilligran in our head the guy who is going to play in timothy lilligran's body in a timothy lilligran jersey when he returns the lineup is not necessarily going to be the guy who was in the lineup before he got hurt

that guy the guy from like a month ago I don't even I don't even think about it to TJ I don't even apologize about it to TJ I go well you get it putting in a potentially still somewhat injured Lilligren over Brody

is tough and maybe not even the right decision but man I've been singing brody's praises these uh you know last week or so oh that game last night was terrible that like two completely brainless giveaways uh the giordano giveaway oh no no well that's what i'm saying yeah before we moved on from the least i think we should also talk about geos probably once game 82 hits i don't think we see them unless there's injury unless right right yeah and in that

in form with whoever he plays with next year because he's ufa um maybe not to the level that he was the past three years because he's on the other side of 30 but this is a player in the nhl no question probably a top four on on a lot of teams uh but we have to do at this point at game 79 or 80 wherever we're at uh what have you done for me lately he's not even the best left-handed right side playing defenseman the leafs have which is jake mccabe like it's like he's he's terrible he's like if if he can play on the left like if there's an opportunity to have him on the left great i will mention that uh both of his worst plays from last night were on the left side of the guys um but like he he can't play there man he can't play there maddie can you bring up the geo

uh clip here let mark mark your general coming coming out from behind around the back of the net um straight into the skates new jersey devil players pressuring the puck there is a leafs player right at the boards that's what made me so upset about this play if you see it's so easy at the top there you see the feet of the least player sitting there waiting to receive the pass and you see a new jersey devils player right at the face-off dot waiting to receive the pass if it goes up the middle of the ice and geo looked at that situation and said i'm gonna pass it right to the devils player right to the middle of the ice and it turned into a goal and it's two two like you know how we talked about god it was i think it's even worse it's even it's even

you i mean geo what are you what are you doing so bad like these are the lapses where we look back on the montreal series and we say how do you make that turnover we look back on on the pick play and we're like how do you call that if this happened in the playoffs this is an all-time moment that we look back on forever and we can't have this kind of stuff it's game 79 was it you can't like it's it's done yeah well i mean both teams were very unserious about this hockey yeah let's be honest i just don't want it in game 83 i want to go back to i want to go back to the just the power play or sorry the penalty kill part because you ran through the stats we talked about the defense i have a problem and i've said this for a couple of weeks now with where their forwards

are positioned on the penalty kill the next time they're on a penalty kill watch how deep leaf forwards are in the zone they do not have time and they do this five on five as well they do not have time to gap up on the on the uh on the uh on the guy who is high in the zone be it a defenseman or a forward it really doesn't matter and so essentially teams can pass the puck along the blue line and get set up with impunity there and you look at who is skating for the leafs on the penalty kill right now okay now i understand that they lost a little bit of a step with yarn croak not being there marner being out hurt them but don't ask him about the injury um yeah conf doer conf is not the fastest skater doer is a bit of a water bug comes all right but he's he's always

comps always positioned well he's not yeah it does he have explosive speed no yeah uh holmberg mcmahon okay probably still not ideal but it's a collection of their worst forwards first of all how dare you matthews plays a good pk uh he plays a pk he he's one of the better defensive centers five on five this year i yes that doesn't make him a great penalty killer i think they're not mutually excused i think he's a good pk i think he's i think he's fine but like it's it's hard to look at any of them and go you're a great penalty killer sure so what i ask is um you know marner's back maybe they're trying to limit his number his minutes uh and he sometimes does take the pk but my point is yarn croak and marner are coming back that'll help

it's usually camp uh camp marner but their deployment is what's bothering me their position on the ice you do not you've got skaters that are not explosive speedy guys and you are expecting them to gap up on a defenseman in a split second when you watch teams that play the leafs power play really well and the beliefs power play has been anemic lately that's also an area of concern what they do is they pressure any the guy who's high if they've got say let's say it's florida if it's marner or it's riley florida did it to them all or killed the leafs with that killed the leafs because they because what the leafs do is they're too slow in zone entries and getting set up on a power play and and so because other teams let them do it whereas the florida panthers

don't let you do that so i think what the theory is is we're going to try to cut off those cross slot passes we're gonna do our best to be uh uh you know clog the slot and be jerks in front of the net and clear rebounds and stuff like that and if they pass the puck to the d-man and he gets it wide at least it'll be on a bad angle but whoever the leafs are playing in the first round probably florida should probably study what new jersey's done with timo meyer the last few games because he ate them up he ate them up man it was bad it was bad i think they've got a they got to really look at that also uh i know that this game didn't matter but i hope i hope beyond hope that you're dan o'brody are not a defensive pairing uh in the playoffs because they were the number one oh boy

the penalty kill pair uh we're at least a couple injuries away from that speaking of injuries um joel edmondson were you at all worried when he blocked that shot and looked sad uh i'm not that worried uh he said he would have played through the other one yeah so i'm not that worried i think they're just like you know what just this is it i still want i wish someone did more videos about you don't have to do specific hockey injuries because that's you know medical information and you don't want to guess and everything but here i am i'm gonna guess when when guys block shots on the laces there's this nerve i forget what it's pronial pronial starts with a p and uh it just it just for me when it happened to me with a with a far softer shot um it's just it it just it just

about being healthy think about what you got to do uh in terms of the coach's strategy and that sort of stuff i'd love that more hockey content like that i it's just my my favorite i don't remember who the youtuber was or a doctor but um there was a ufc fight where a fighter got kicked in the leg and his leg it wasn't broken it just stopped working this the person who kicked this fighter in the leg shut their leg off that makes me squirm well yeah but the vast majority of viewing viewers were like what what happened yeah like if you really wanted to put your conspiracy hat on you could be like he threw the fight like he's what happened but there's there's like an injury you can get called a foot drop that i'd never heard of and it's basically

No, I'm not going to tell you. i want you to listen to it it happened in toronto um uh it's a it's a really fascinating look at like how like one of my questions was like how do the players actually feel about this are they excited are they uncomfortable do the do trade protections how did that how does that work um and basically anybody that tells you that the trade protection things has been worked out it hasn't that that is still to be negotiated and that stinks and uh and and these like let's say

you live in scottsdale and it's a great place to live why wouldn't you want to live in scottsdale arizona's amazing uh uh you now you have you own a house and you got to move who's paying for that so i was looking i was looking at the coyotes like just to add to what you're talking about their whole decor needs to be re-signed but it's mostly rfas um i was expecting to look at their roster and most guys were on expiring deals that's not the case a lot of those guys are stuck they're stuck in their deal and they're gonna have to follow the coyotes wherever they end up that's right now and those those are people with families man um there's a lot of like incredible information and also i asked alan about like the smith entertainment group as well

like what do we think about them what are they going to do because it's not like the coyotes are walking into a perfect situation in salt lake there is going to be obstructed view 13 000 max capacity for a hockey rink but they're still not great it's not it's it's it's better it's 8 000 more than 5 000 a lot better but i i think that the um the long-term strategy there is interesting because obviously, not only are we moving the team to Utah and they will get a new arena, we'll get into that, but there is a right that Murillo is likely to hold where he can, quote, reactivate the franchise within five years.

So Arizona now becomes, and CJ's been saying this for years, becomes the most likely expansion franchise in the NHL as soon as they move. they literally just need a place to play that makes sense that's right that's right houston is already is up there as well uh and atlanta obviously has two very interested groups one of the things cj said on on the show and you should listen to the whole thing is like the building in glendale is fine it's fine it's just that it's in freaking glendale yeah it's just far away from their fan base and i don't know do you want to drive an hour hour and a half from wherever you're

at or do you want to not do that and just sit at home yeah and so um it's an easy choice for most people something we did not talk about on the show but i think you guys would find interesting is frank servali said earlier this season the coyotes were not paying their hotel bills and hotels around the league banded together and demanded the coyotes pay for their hotel stays up front with a certified check what so i have heard the same and i can tell you one of the things i've heard throughout the season about the coyotes with this hotel room issue that i've known about is that uh the league had to step in no way what and cover the bill they had to force them to pay dude this is why like so when so you know i don't know i don't know what the

reasoning is for not paying the bill but the reality is that this is a thing that happened it's widely known throughout the nhl that it happened and uh it follows up a tweet that i think will make a lot more sense people took this tweet as offensive to arizona hockey and it shouldn't be andy strickland uh who's known from the uh from uh he's well cam cam and strick podcast he said the problem in arizona is the ownership and business management group have fractured too many relationships in the market no one appears to be interested in helping them and visiting teams are done uh playing in a youth hockey auditorium uh and and andy's right especially on the uh ownership side with fractured relationships so this creates an issue because

when you look at it like like a very basic thing like not paying your hotel room bills it's a small thing at the end of the day it's small potatoes when we're talking about billions of dollars but it's a big thing when you talk about reputation and so if the nhl is really and we still don't know that this is going to happen we're about 90 of the way there if the nhl is going to um uh if the nhl is going to do this um and and give murello the rights back to reactivate the franchise by 2030 or whatever it's going to be um we have to take this into consideration they were not paying basic bills they didn't pay the tax bill in gila uh i think no no it was remember they didn't pay the tax bill yeah mike mike stevens had that he broke that three years

ago two or three years now we know that they weren't paying their hotel room bills i'm sure there are other bills you know you you start to extrapolate are there other bills that are outstanding and so when you hear that as a business even if the hotel stay is twenty thousand dollars and you know that this company is worth billions right or hundreds of millions you start to think why would i get into bigger business with you if you can't do the small business right right and that is going to be a hitch in the giddy up for for arizona going forward and i think that is something that the betman and the league have really got to pay attention to because they've been so successful with the um the the vegas and the seattle expansion groups um this is going to

since we hit 30 is three and he's part of that group that's tied right it's like Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Taves, Kane, Keith Seabrook it's a really select group it's a really select group of guys so in terms of a generation literally a generation we throw that word out too flippantly literally a generation in terms of winning championships he's the greatest he has 12 individual trophies he's gonna end up actual top i think at least seven um he's already top 10 could finish his highest top five you could absolutely argue he's the second best player ever now you gotta look at i i think jogger gets lost because of who he played with for so long that dude won scoring title after scoring title after scoring title there was there was a ridiculous

Nebraska is a place with several cities, none of which I can name. uh south dakota is great for when you want to drive to minnesota and north dakota is great
