Starting point is 00:00:00 The Steve Dangle Podcast. Powered by Sports Interaction. Wanna bet? S. D. P. P. The Steve Dangle Podcast. With your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wylde, and Jesse Blake. Well, hello. Hello, hello. Um, it's Wednesday. In Toronto, it's 15 degrees. Yeah, we're all gonna die. We were all going to die anyway. Yeah, that's fair. It's a question of how, right? And when.
Starting point is 00:00:32 Exactly. Sooner than maybe we would like. But, you know, since we're all here, let's have a good time. And I wanted, remember I was showing you the Kevin Durant jersey? I want to show you one from the Islanders. This time it's for Beau Horvat. And it's Anthony Beauvilliers jersey, but it says Beau Horvat. That's hilarious that I'm seeing that for the first time.
Starting point is 00:00:55 Oh. these i just thought it was funny i also thought that's a very funny thing that i didn't definitely didn't bring up on the show did you bring that up oh i'm sorry i'm sorry i got tagged in it later i was like oh i should bring that up no bring that up on the show i forgot that thousand percent i brought oh yeah during the kevin doran thing uh i don't remember when but that's dude that's really funny yeah well done well done well that love that very much i didn't remember you bring it up on the show i thought you're just being spicy because we've seen it on twitter yeah i thought you were being a hipster about it yeah oh yeah i knew this bad forever you guys are very
Starting point is 00:01:31 ig reels to tiktok yeah i want to be big on ig reels baby can't wait for three months from now when you're like look at this beau horvath jersey i found on facebook you guys know rihanna performed at the super bowl halftime show you said in july and she's pregnant yeah um uh i have to tell you a story we had a uh we were talking about that this morning on on virgin radio and talking about just the effects of being on that because obviously artists don't get paid to do the super bowl they get a production budget and oftentimes they overspend it and they have to pay for that themselves so like the weekend spent like seven million dollars of his own money on top of the 15 million bucks they give you to put to produce it that's a lot of money and uh rihanna um rihanna
Starting point is 00:02:17 when she took out her fenty pack for like three seconds they estimate that that three seconds alone was worth five million dollars oh my god and they said that better bitch better have my money the streams for that from 11 p.m to 12 p.m went up 2600 it's like a reminder right it's not like people didn't like rihanna it's like oh yeah i love that song it's the best kind of promo and she's one of the only people that have ever outrated the Super Bowl. Wow! So the Super Bowl got $113.5
Starting point is 00:02:48 million and she got $118 million. So the Super Bowl was one of the highest rated Super Bowls ever. Yes. And Rihanna is the second highest Super Bowl halftime ever. What's the highest? Yes. Highest one. Missy Elliott, for sure.
Starting point is 00:03:04 When everyone was like, oh man, whoever this is, she's about to pop off. And then, Jesse? I just run down the list like just name one is it michael jackson it is not michael jackson is it prince no it is you too katie perry is it katie perry you were right i was right you were right what now what superbowl was that that was six or seven years ago the teams i forget i'd have no idea oh that would that drives a lot of that part of it but the other part of it was let me guess the patriots oh i'm sure it was like was it patriots giants you know where they're going for i don't know
Starting point is 00:03:39 It's impossible I'll tell you why The reason XLX was She brought up Lenny Kravitz as well No one remembers that And that was between XLIX Was that before or after Lenny Kravitz
Starting point is 00:03:55 So yeah So Rihanna got 118 million viewers The halftime show got 118.5 With Katy Perry And I'm still looking There's an entire fucking article on this on Wikipedia and they still don't actually tell you
Starting point is 00:04:12 which team's fucking plate. Click the Super Bowl. There's no clickable fucking link. Type in Super Bowl XLX! I'm freaking out at technology. The fucking Patriots won, okay? Who did they beat? That tells me nothing!
Starting point is 00:04:26 That tells me surprisingly... That was probably the game where Marchant should have run it. That was the Malcolm Butler game. Who should have ran it? was it marshawn lynch oh yeah i thought you said marshand no marshawn lynch marshawn yeah maybe i did say marshawn but richard sherman with the best reaction in sports history i love him just he's okay he's like he's fallen off as a commentator has he yeah he's gotten too far
Starting point is 00:04:53 away from the game and he's gotten a little like i'm just gonna say the most inflammatory thing to try and get attention oh 24 24 year old with the lambo kind of shit kind of but not that that bad but uh yeah anyways that's a sidetrack well so what we're talking about so the halftime show but what's interesting about that is the um is the fact that in 2015 the amount of people that had cable which is the only metric by which they measure this they don't measure it if you're streaming it they don't measure it if you're pirating it the only metric still is arbitron in these states it's called arbitron it's called uh or arbitron and nielsen and then up here it's something else and and the only the only way they do it is they they hook a box up to your
Starting point is 00:05:38 fucking television and measure what you're watching and if you ever want to watch something embarrassing what they're finding is duh most people watch it on their computer yeah and that one box is going to amount for thousands of people because it's not like everybody has a box it's one box they give it to a geographical area and they say okay this one person represents 50 000 people 50 000 in this metro area yeah and that's how they base advertising dollars on these things so if if you look at katie perry's thing the amount of people cable cable cutting is probably at least 20 to 25 percent since then so rihanna based on those old metrics with the fact that there's been a 25 reduction in cable still doing that is unbelievable and so that you could estimate
Starting point is 00:06:21 probably that 30 or 40 million on top of that we're watching so in theory if you had a television program and also 50 cousins you could get them all to get one of those boxes yes you are describing an episode of family guy is that an actual
Starting point is 00:06:40 episode of family guy where I think it's called Peter gets a Nielsen the Griffins become a Nielsen family I think is the title of the episode yeah and the Peter gets a bunch of Nielsen boxes he steals them out of the back of a truck and then he uh directs tv so he'll he'll call the people and he'll tell them i want this to happen
Starting point is 00:07:01 tom tucker shave your mustache and then he does it because peter has the nielsen boxes ratings and he can move television ratings in every single way i worked at a place um and i won't i won't tell you where but you're if you're in media you're not allowed to have one of these boxes or in radio they call them ppm meters and they look like pagers can your cousin no your family cannot have it uh and i was at a place a station where a sales rep had one and and and was like like burner tuning the radio station that she worked for which was in our cluster but not the station i worked for and like was like suspended by the company and like had to give a speech and what was so weird is in the speech she's like i know that any of you would have done the same oh my
Starting point is 00:07:44 god and all of us were like no we wouldn't have i know that you are all also unethical pieces of garbage what the fuck i was like in my early 20s i was like what the fuck is happening here this woman is in her 40s anyway stop giving clues yeah yeah yeah no no it's it's a long time ago but it was it's one of those things that actually does happen and you get you're getting a big shit for that yeah so anyway the system is stupid yeah it's so easy to fucking manipulate i made fun of it you have an idea toronto has what was trying to have like in the gta there's like what six million people eight million people eight to ten i think yeah but like in the in the in the range right yeah you know greater do you know how many people they use to measure radio for the entire
Starting point is 00:08:29 golden horseshoe 125 it's 800 for almost 10 million people 800 so whenever you see like oh man five million people watched this no they didn't it's an estimate no it's yeah but it's an estimate based on uh nonsense oh yeah absolutely literal nonsense yeah yeah you'd be now if you extrapolate it over the over the like over you know what the super bowl is doing you can you can get a pretty good guess but that's the best you can hope for it's a pretty good guess no you can't no you cannot yeah the way they measure it is fabrication google how accurate are nielsen ratings i want to know what percent they claim they're off because they'll it's supposed to be a scientific thing you know they've developed this over centuries decades i should say um and they probably have
Starting point is 00:09:25 a percentage that they have an error imagine i want to know what it is voted yeah 800 people get to vote for 10 million people and those 800 people we're gonna guess how many people they represent holy shit bro holy shit it's complete nonsense tv rating so here's the best answer i could find um so here's here's how here's how they do it they obviously it's the extrapolation right nielsen says that it has 42 000 households in the united states participating at any one time for 350 million 350 million people yeah so in the united states more people attend a midsummer jays game when they're like really in it you get 55 000 people are you telling me more people at the rogers center that have a nielsen but i want to make sure the average lfr reaches more people
Starting point is 00:10:23 than there are Nielsen boxes in the United States of America. Hang on, hang on. Let me make sure. Let me just make sure. That's accurate. So about 42,000 and within those are 120,000 televisions.
Starting point is 00:10:40 So that's 42,000 households, 120,000 televisions. Nielsen estimates there are 122.4 million total U.S. television homes in 2022. My last telephar got 51,000 views. This is from The Athletic, by the way, i'm pulling this from oh nice yeah so this is a legitimate shawnee fits uh it's not shawnee fits because that's american it's billy shay actually it should be shawnee fits and billy
Starting point is 00:11:02 shay coming at you um i think uh imagine spending money that way what well i mean and and and that the thing is billions of dollars are and here's what it doesn't include right it doesn't include obviously netflix hulu amazon anything else but it also doesn't include devices like dvr devices like tivo um so or apple tv that allow you to re-watch things like record and re-watch does not count so yeah it's kind of interesting the uh um and like for instance i can tell you this because i worked in i worked for both cable companies and have worked for both cable companies the most watched television channel in canada based on what the cable companies themselves know which you can't you can't make this information public for sale so you can't
Starting point is 00:11:49 sell against this but uh rogers and bell if you go behind the scenes would tell you that uh cp24 is by far the most watched channel in the country and in and number you know what number seven was in the country remember that channel one show i used to do number seven in the country most watched because it's the number one it's the when you turn your cable when you turn your television right so seventh most watched channel in the country it's a lot that's a lie no no what no no that's actually not alive in the room no hold on a second you're not you're misunderstanding me that's not a lie that's the real number what i'm telling you is is the the cable boxes themselves also record what you are watching and based on those i'm talking about non-ratings no i'm i'm
Starting point is 00:12:35 saying it's a lie because they make you watch it yes oh i see that's what i'm saying okay all right I didn't choose to put you on my TV. I just turned on my box and you are there. What do you mean you didn't watch my great Cable 1 show? I like my Cable Access show. Thank you very much. What if those numbers were for the first channel that you put on after the first channel? Then you're probably not number seven.
Starting point is 00:13:01 Here's a basic idea of how Nielsen extrapolates. If one Nielsen viewer represents a thousand viewers extrapolated, then a hundred Nielsen households watching suggests a hundred thousand viewers because they talk about it. So if a hundred Nielsen viewers watch a program and each household represents a hundred thousand viewers, then it suggests that there are 10 million viewers watching one thing. They won't give you a percentage though on how accurate the number actually is. It's probably not at all. What if this is how hockey was scored? oh and some some nielsen accreditation was suspended in 2021 in because of pandemic lapses
Starting point is 00:13:43 but they are still as far as i know um arbitron i think is the other big one um sometimes they there's confirmed industry complaints that nielsen was undercounting tv obviously because it wasn't including you know other other things like re-watching and whatever and i think arbitron is the other one and i still think they have the same problems as nielsen does so whether or not nielsen specifically did this super bowl um they're they're both done the same so what if nhl goals only counted if you had a nielsen box and the only player in last night's colorado avalanche game was dennis mulligan right and each goal he scores counts for 10 so he they won 10 nothing that's right it's a wild thing especially in the there are no adults in the digital age
Starting point is 00:14:31 there are none we're all just tall children there's no adults yeah yeah I mean that's the great thing about podcasts is at least we can say our numbers are real it's unbelievable we still walk this earth oh yeah how does an entire I need to stop
Starting point is 00:14:46 it's it's crazy that they haven't moved beyond this system and that there isn't some sort of like central reporting like how okay yeah all the boxes record what's watching we know that they're spying on you not even spying they just collect your information right so why would they not just report the actual numbers i have an answer for you so in the uk they reported uh declining
Starting point is 00:15:11 television numbers for five or six years at the beginning of the 2010 just like everyone why is that i bet it's because people watch fewer things right and what happened in the uk and the uk did this a lot quicker is they're abandoning amfm if they haven't already it's almost done and uh the reason for that is because there's better technology available streaming and that sort of thing so all of the television and and media companies got together and said listen we can't continue to estimate what our audiences is are excuse me because advertisers are going to digital they're going to spend it on facebook who at least facebook can give you maybe maybe the the results kind of suck but at least they can give them to you in an identifiable quant like you can quantify
Starting point is 00:15:55 what you bought right and so so what they did was they said why don't we all agree all of our streaming numbers everything that we get we turn them over and we have a governing body that takes them all in that makes a little more sense what they won't do in the states and canada because our societies are a little more set up to be uh you know not only am i not going to work with you fuck you um uh we won't do that like essentially like there's two companies that own about 90 percent of the media in canada right i work for one of them sdpm that's right yeah and and so you know they're they are and they are cable companies and they're diametrically opposed like they do not get along do not work together i'm gonna except for owning the toronto maple
Starting point is 00:16:38 east which is super weird i'm gonna google and hey and raptors tfc exactly all the whole thing marley's larry tannenbaum also says hello yeah and lawrence tannenbaum is sir lawrence of tannenbaum is uh is the uh is the main sort of you know shareholder there yeah but my whole point in saying that is that the same thing happens in the states the idea that abc nbc cbs and fox would ever work together and not try to fuck each other and ever be able to agree on a set of terms that all of them would be able to hand it all over is just impossible so what they'd rather do is go down they're still making money but they'd rather lose the viewership than work together they could be making a lot more diametrically with reference to opposition completely semicolon
Starting point is 00:17:24 directly that's a big word adam well one thing that we see in the music industry is they have their central reporting you know like uh because the the labels don't control the distribution unlike in tv where it's like you have the tv product and you put it on the tv um and then you have all the numbers the labels they have to go like apple and spotify and whatever so that the numbers kind of go back to billboard who then puts them in the charts but what we see from the labels in the nobody likes to work together is they cheat their numbers yes they have streaming farms that they don't talk about that are very illegal to boost these numbers and then they're reported boosted numbers to these central bodies are essentially lies in some respect the uh did
Starting point is 00:18:05 you see there was a uh there was one and i i should talk i should should preferences by saying we've never done this but iheart media in the states was called on the carpet because you can buy onto free-to-play apps that make you watch a commercial before you play they would buy time on these free-to-play apps and they would run 60 seconds of a podcast and then that would count as a listen for that oh geez and then so what so then a whole investigation was done and these there are podcasts that are like at the top of the chart that haven't put out an episode in 18 months and they're like how is so a company was like how the fuck is this possible so they came up with this huge thing and found out that a lot of like major players and podcasts that are trying
Starting point is 00:18:51 to like iheart media and a few of the other ones are like are we're we're basically juicing their numbers on shows that don't even exist anymore which is nonsense though because like if you had a giant deal with mars bars and you were like we get 12 billion listens a year which is wrong because there aren't that many people and then no one bought mars bars you would know but i think that the thing is is that like mars bar mars buys um if it was mars in this case they're buying i chose one of my favorite they're buying for the best one i love it so good the they're buying they're doing for the brand recognitions rather than the direct sales right so they're just getting their name out there yeah because they've proven that like our human brains are stupid
Starting point is 00:19:37 They've proven that if you just say something Enough and it's enough in your eyes Advertising works 3.29 times If it's just in front of your face You might not think it does But it is working subconsciously I'm just going to get bots
Starting point is 00:19:53 To tweet Timo Meier at Kyle Dubas For the next two and a half weeks Because it works Honestly as of this morning It looks like the bots are working Because Kevin Weeks Tweeted and it was actually late last night that the Leafs are the fourth team now officially in on Timo Meier.
Starting point is 00:20:12 Almost on the podium. Now, L.A., New Jersey, and I'm going to have to look up the last one, but L.A., New Jersey are like the favorites. Carolina. And Carolina actually is the one that, according to Weeks and Luke Fox, if they're both to be believed, which I think they are the pretty good sources, the Carolina Hurricanes hold the key, says former Hurricanes advisor Mike Futa on Real Kipper and Bourne on Tuesday.
Starting point is 00:20:36 Mike Futa's pretty well known And I would imagine that I would imagine that that makes sense With Pacioretty going down You've got the space It's just a question of How does Don Waddell rip off the San Jose Sharks Because he doesn't make a trade if he doesn't rip you off
Starting point is 00:20:51 So this is the thing How does Eric Tulsky via Don Waddell Rip off the San Jose Sharks And this is the problem The Sharks have all the power Because they have this player Right and he's also they could in theory just extend him yeah they give him it's a 10 million dollar
Starting point is 00:21:13 qualifying offer here you go and they just give it to him and it's like well i'm not going to turn down 10 million dollars so they have all the power the hurricanes on the other hand have all the we murder everybody in traits so if if the carolina hurricanes are calling you and going here's a trade offer don't take it yeah you're missing something no it's so and like if you make them a trade offer and they say yes pay attention to how quickly they say it you know so it's two very interesting forces opposing each other if i remember correctly they didn't give up very much for max domi last year either i don't think they did no i wouldn't remember the trade exactly it's probably you'd remember if it if it was a first yeah and it wasn't and it certainly wasn't
Starting point is 00:21:59 right? I want to say it was like two mid-round picks, like a third and a fifth or something like that. That's very interesting. That's very interesting. It's going to be in these situations, you tend to have to overpay because you're bidding. Yeah. Right? You're having to outbid teams.
Starting point is 00:22:15 The Max Domi trade was a three-way actually. See? Check out the big brain on the hurricane. From to Florida. Florida? Yes. The President's Trophy winning Florida Panthers. Max Domi, 50% retained, a six-round pick that eventually went to Toronto, who selected Joshua Davies, and they got Igor Korshkov.
Starting point is 00:22:43 See, I don't think Joshua Davies is a Leafs pick, so I think the Leafs traded that pick. Oh, they traded that pick? Holy shit. It was a two-Carolina. Oh, that's a trade-treat nightmare. Two-Carolina, Max Domi, and then Tyler Inamoto? Sure. inamoto and then columbus got aiden hersch check yours check who is a guy who's just then he's an
Starting point is 00:23:07 ahl guy and they got his signing rights so i'm sorry what did they give up steve this trade wasn't very interesting no it wasn't what a great trade i'm excited they gave up korshkov yeah cool they got they gave up er korshkov and they got salary retained two times and somehow they got max domey everyone's like is he worth the second yeah that's crazy you got something here do i think it's because that nielsen conversation made me like rub in my face i'm sure we're gonna get a bunch of advertising people in advertising reaching out going oh my god and this and this if you talk to somebody who was like a media buyer or media seller they it they could rant for hours about it anyway let's talk about the leafs um i so are they
Starting point is 00:23:50 frontrunner Seymour Meyer? Well, they're one of the four teams in. They're in the race. And listen, everybody laughs at Kevin Weeks' videos. That guy was fucking dynamite at last trade. Every trade he had.
Starting point is 00:24:07 And I wonder... And Brennan Minnell. And Brennan Minnell. He beat you to Brennan Minnell. I'm sorry, Steve. That son of a gun. I think that it's interesting, though, because like i think sometimes you have to take a trade deadline as um what's available right because
Starting point is 00:24:27 if you're looking for a victor headman type impact defenseman there isn't one so you have to look at what's available and go does that fit and i think the leafs if they could if they could get somebody who's like victor headman they would yes but they can't yes so okay so you're going to do defense by committee, which I think they've already done a pretty good job of, and get that left-side impact player that you need. It's very much driven by who's available. Case in point,
Starting point is 00:24:57 Antoine Vermette in 2015, who went for, I want to say, a first-round pick plus. And third line center for the Blackhawks. You know what people tend to forget? They won!
Starting point is 00:25:12 Yeah. Well, you remember Curtis Glencross. I think he went to the from the flames of the capitals or something like that for like a second round pick it was the second and third by the next training camp he couldn't make the nhl anymore he scored uh i did that trade tree and if i remember correct he scored a goal a goal you can pay ridiculous prices i mean look at placanets although placanets regular season versus placanets playoffs in toronto he was great against boston that that was great that was uh what i love about the glen cross trade and you should go watch this trade tree is, uh,
Starting point is 00:25:46 the flames sold and made the playoffs anyway, because that was the cardiac kids. That was, uh, Johnny Gaudreau's rookie year and they ended up making it despite being sellers at the deadline. They went on this ridiculous streak and the, I want to say they made it just as far, if not farther than the, than the capitals because they
Starting point is 00:26:08 made it to the second round, didn't they? Yeah, I think so. And the capitals, I don't even know if they made it past the first. yeah they did all right and that's when the caps were leafing it right they couldn't get over the hump couldn't get over the hump could not get over the hump there's been a few teams to get over the hump in recent years right uh the capitals the blues um the avalanche last year yeah it's i don't know who gets over it this year is it the hurricanes is it the leafs is it neither
Starting point is 00:26:33 i guess we'll see one thing you mentioned that we got to correct is you said la Oh, is it not LA? It's Las Vegas Who just lost Mark Stone indefinitely And Logan Thompson is week to week But he'll be back But Mark Stone's salary
Starting point is 00:26:52 The important thing Logan Thompson makes 700 grand The important thing why I'm bringing up Mark Stone Is that Alright, Steve Who plays in the Swedish Elite League That used to be in the NHL 4 the friggin' playoffs. You don't know Jeff
Starting point is 00:27:10 Bob? His name is Benjamin Kahn and he is a guy. I'm trying to make a point about Mark Stone's salary. Make the point. Here we are talking about Logan Thompson and Jeff Kahn's. Is that his name? Benjamin. Jeff Kahn's?
Starting point is 00:27:28 Ben-jam-in Kahn's. What position does Jeff Kahn's play? Goaltender. He tends the goal and he catches right. Oh, he's a right-handed gold cut. Yeah, super weird. Yeah, that's funky.
Starting point is 00:27:42 Yeah. Yeah. Eclectic. It's worthy of mention. Oh, yeah. IMO. So you were saying? Vegas always seems to do this.
Starting point is 00:27:54 Yes. They get the guy to go on LTIR until the playoffs. They get a bunch of room. They go get the big fish. This year, it's Timo Meier. He fills that Mark Stone slot. and all of a sudden Vegas is in the Stanley Cup final again. It's so wild.
Starting point is 00:28:08 Although it does, Mark Stone is sort of entering this weird part of his career where he was an elite two-way player and now he's had enough injury trouble that it's like, I don't know if this is what he does anymore. Right? Yeah. But like if you get Meyer
Starting point is 00:28:25 and then you get whatever version of Mark Stone you have for the playoffs, like it's a pretty good forward group there in Vegas. The average Vegas Golden Knight in a few years is going to be like 45 years old it's honestly it's funny though with vegas and and with boston they always go out and get somebody they always who's who's out on the market oh vegas and vegas is in you know vegas is publicly and boston just gets it done and so it always i i always like all people can talk about they've just fallen over themselves to talk about how hard it is for the
Starting point is 00:28:56 leafs to be able to get this chemo meyer thing done it can be done and guess what guys and i hate to say that and i am not a pro trading matt and i's person we don't know if that guy can play at the nhl level you know who can timo meyer yeah matt and i's might be good he might even be great a boat's a boat but the mystery box can be anything exactly it can even be a boat sometimes you gotta vegas it sometimes you gotta boston it now vegas as much as you want to laugh uh well they weren't very good last year okay but they made the stanley cup final and the conference finals uh within like three years of getting and they barely missed the playoffs in a season where they had so many injuries yeah all starting goaltenders that they tried to run out there
Starting point is 00:29:39 got injured i'm not even totally sure that robin lenders ever gonna play again no no it looks like he's done i could play with a broken hand yeah to try and fused neck so like they had very few players in the lineup and they should have had fewer yes yes the one thing about vegas going out and getting everybody though like some agents some agents who have podcasts might argue that the way they treat players isn't the best i and running them in and out of town isn't a good way to run a hockey team that's because they lie to them they lie to them publicly alan didn't say that to me nobody said any names you can be ruthless as long as you're not lying about it just be like just be honest hey we're gonna move on i'm sorry we we signed a five-year deal this
Starting point is 00:30:30 is 18 months in by to do but like dubas is detriment or to his benefit i think he cares about those relationships a little bit more than other gms across the league he's a player yeah don't tell me the one thing it's and dubas wouldn't make this excuse because he has made big traits um but don't tell me that it's not like there are people like wow i know everybody wants talking about on Twitter about how it's not possible. Oh, it's just, I can't see how that's possible. Well, if you were the GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs, it's your job to see how it could be. And this whole thing about future-proofing, the one thing that Vegas has done, the other thing that Boston has done, and you eventually have to rebuild, but what those guys have done really,
Starting point is 00:31:11 really well is they go, here's a bunch of players who are good at the NHL level. we're willing to guy trade guys who might be for guys that are and if you collect enough good players at the nhl level it gives you a better opportunity weird to win the stanley cup and i think sometimes when we talk about this in toronto especially because we we wasted draft capital when we shouldn't have for so many years there's a in the fan base and i completely get it because i feel it too there's a little bit of i'm freaked out about trading a prospect because what if That turns into guys that we let go. Luongo, Niedermeyer.
Starting point is 00:31:49 Who else? Who else? Alex Steen. Alex Steen. Kenny Johnson. Okay, so here's where the Leafs have gotten bit historically. And yes, this shit happened in the 90s. Scott Niedermeyer, third overall pick.
Starting point is 00:32:01 That's not happening. Luongo, fourth overall pick. That's not happening. You look at the, like, with all due respect, but you look at the first round picks who the tampa bay lightning have said goodbye to in recent years fart fart fart fart fart like just not ask not stars rask is rask is different that was so fucking stupid because he was he was a i want to say 24th overall pick or 25th and had enough evidence that he was a
Starting point is 00:32:34 fucking star in the making that they shouldn't have traded brian burke said we're going for it and I'm moving this. That was John Ferguson Jr. Yes, yes. JFJ said, I'm going for this, and we're moving them. And Pogge's our guy. Tugger asked to the Bruins,
Starting point is 00:32:52 John Ferguson Jr. was the assistant GM, Andrew Raycroft was in the broadcast booth. You mean now? Yeah, and then they played the Leafs and beat them repeatedly. You can't more shit on a team. You can't actually take more of a shit directly on the team's head
Starting point is 00:33:08 than the Bruins have on the Leafs. to your point that it doesn't come back and bite you sometimes it does yes sometimes these guys pan out yes but but are you willing to take that risk is it the right guy you're conflating um trade deadline deals with simply purely stupid fucking trades like that stupid fucking trade happened in the off season yeah whereas like these deals where tampa deals away their future they happen at the deadline and they a lot of the time it's players
Starting point is 00:33:42 they picked. Yes. If Tampa's willing to give you someone, don't take them. Stop it. No one is better at going whoops but Tampa drafted them so you might want them. Well, this is the wild thing. If Tampa drafted them in rounds, let's say
Starting point is 00:34:00 three through six you should go get them. They're probably a star. yeah if they're not even seven we'll throw in seven if they drafted them in rounds one or two and they're offering to you throw them out the window as a as a general manager i'm just saying you need to weigh all the options here you know it's some sometimes it's the go for it and the matthew nice thing i uh completely understand where people are like i don't want to give up this prospect who looks so good but i get it there's nothing's been proven there and people
Starting point is 00:34:31 don't want to give it up because they haven't seen it yet like what if he tries he plays a couple games in the nhl and you're like oh i get it you know we haven't even gotten to that point and you're already giving him up but if there's a chance to go get a star like timo meyer just go get it eventually we have to say this isn't we're not looking down the road at three years we're looking at winning two rounds we're looking at winning one round here and go get this team a top line winger so that they can go do it and who cares if you mortgage matthew nyes we don't know what he's gonna be and that that is no that's the other thing is that like listen it doesn't have to be timo meyer right but he's but it has to be one out there right now it has to be this idea
Starting point is 00:35:09 of future proofing a team that's in win now mode like people are talking about like well maybe we just late wait till next year because boston will be less good didn't we say that last year oh i mean like uh bergeron might retire fucking not only is bergeron back crachy's back and they've had such a good year why the fuck would they leave they could just sign again they've They made their money. They're going to sign some college-free agent named Ross Boston who's going to fucking score 70 goals and win the Selkie. And it's going to be the most frustrating thing of all time.
Starting point is 00:35:41 I want to steal the cup of Ross Boston. Yeah, Ross Boston. You're going to bring the fucking cup back to Boston. They're going to put him on a line with Jake Dabruskin, some asshole for league men, and win the cup in 16 games. And it's going to be so frustrating. Binge watch the hell out of a Be a pro career
Starting point is 00:35:58 Of Ross Boston Ross Boston He's born in Pawtucket I want Welcome to Roston Would be the beginning of every broadcast Yeah
Starting point is 00:36:13 I also think man you gotta Fucking Jack Edwards and Mayor Quimby On every broadcast I just think if at the NHL level with austin matthews who by the way has not who's been a little bit hurt this year and that sort of thing but at the nhl level with mitch martyr who has been spectacular this season and william neal and who's been spectacular and john tabars who's had a resurgent year and oh my god they've got better goaltending than we thought what what yeah way better what what possible excuse would
Starting point is 00:36:44 you have to not go for it all the division stuff well fuck you it's gonna always be tough always going to be tough so why don't you just take a swing and i i'm getting to that point like it was it was it was you know last week we were talking about like is it lafferty and mccabe i'd like mccabe yeah but i'm not gonna like timo meyer to me changes the complexion of what the toronto maple leafs are all of a sudden you have because i think it's going to be bunting matthews kneelander and then it's going to be meyer tavaris marner what a fucking disaster to play against yeah horrible this is why this is why kerfoot to me is the perfect candidate to trade because i feel like we talked about this last show he is he's in your bottom six he makes 3.5 million dollars you can't
Starting point is 00:37:30 do that no you can't do that because of the way you designed yourself and woe is you you have matthew stavaris uh nylander and marner like woe is you woe is you you have two relatively cheap players who have worked out very well in your top six roles bunting was a masterful signing i still like that player despite what i've said on on the last couple shows callie yarn crow uh you couldn't ask for that to go and you got three more years of that too it's great and now tonight he's been demoted to the bottom six and that's fine because that's probably what they got him for kerfoot it looks like is going to be on a line with tavaris and martin we haven't seen that before we've seen Kerfoot with Tavares and Nylander and it
Starting point is 00:38:13 was just a great pile of nothing for a very long time and I wish they would stop doing it when the playoffs come he's going to be in the bottom six no find a way to get rid of them use that space and the LTI our space you've accrued to go out and get actual should be in prison murderers go out and get
Starting point is 00:38:36 guys with knives for hands who will scary evil murder the rest of the league and win games seven to whatever like you the trade deadline is when the leafs should they should swing through the fences every year because of the way they're designed yes well they're designed for this year and last year and next year it's this is the this is the window this is what a window looks like and like dubas is clever and right to want to go after players who are not pure rentals oh yeah 100 i don't i don't hate that totally i don't see timo meyer as a pure rental well if you're able to go out and get also you're not able to get guys who are gonna he's probably gonna finish the season with over
Starting point is 00:39:19 40 goals okay you're not able those guys aren't available every year and they're certainly not going to be available to develop in the window for matthews and marner and neilander and i also especially if the contract hits the right i want you to keep something in mind too people talk about how are they going to resign meyer okay the cap goes up three million bucks minimum this offseason hold on cap goes up three million bucks this offseason kerfoot is off the books at three and a half and if you got to go to eight million with meyer over eight years so is hall there's your fucking money guys it's there where does william neilander play in 2024 he plays for the least in 20 with meyer on the team making 8 million because it'll go up again plus john
Starting point is 00:39:59 tavar is making 11 plus mitch plus austin's 13 they're talking about they're talking about this like it it's gonna go up like it's gonna pop like it's gonna be 10 to 12 million over three years okay there's gonna be money let's say it doesn't you i i have an idea for all front offices out there not just the logan thompson uh that that'd be a great idea yeah sign a starting goaltender for league men for three years that'd be super good joseph wool um there you go or um do your job do your job make it work make it work like uh oh oh no we're gonna have to trade william kneelander yeah it's supposed it's something you should do do your job oh well i think that's a non-starter no no no like let's say uh oh well then like well we want to keep willie though oh
Starting point is 00:40:48 okay you know how you can do that is uh trade timo meyer oh well we don't really want it well i i've news for you. You have to do one of them, so do them. Stop it with the Yabba! Do your fucking job! You're trying to win! Ah! Yeah, but we can't afford it. Oh, okay, well then trade one of the big four. Well, we can't!
Starting point is 00:41:08 Well, gosh, it sure looks like you just can't do anything. How about I fire you and hire someone who can't? If you can't, you simply quit. Do your job! The idea of getting Timo Mayer at the deadline and then flipping him before
Starting point is 00:41:23 during the offseason when he's still an RFA to a team that wants to sign him and getting an asset for that back. I think that's a very creative solution. You don't even necessarily have to get good value for him. No, just get something. Something where in a
Starting point is 00:41:40 normal circumstance, you get nothing. Let's say it costs you four draft picks, right? And you're able to recoup one of those picks. All right, cool. It costs you three draft picks for an elite trade deadline player yeah that's normal and got that whole postseason run with timo meyer and i and i get it there will be articles four to seven games there will be articles written going the
Starting point is 00:42:02 leafs have again nothing to draft this year boohoo man we would love so many of the moves they've made in recent years if they had just motherfucking won yeah around if the leafs won a round with nick felino do we care i will die on the hill that it that trade was fine until his back got injured if he was healthy honestly i still think it was too much even at the time i was like it's too much if tavaris was healthy i think they went in for um if felino was healthy even i think they at least win the series taylor hall and nick felino cost about the same thing see the wrong i thought it was fucking stupid the thing that they didn't do is go get taylor hall but that's that's fucking silly it's it's like that was the one time i think you can definitively say in kyle dubas's
Starting point is 00:42:43 tenure that he deviated from his own plan oh yeah the kyle dubas that we have always known would have got taylor hall there's extended footage of because remember the amazon documentary they filmed the whole thing i will pay 1 million nielsen rating box dollars which is 400 actual dollars but then some people in your house might have a couple tvs right then it's like we have to account for that yeah 150 dollars yeah i have in my possession let me think a stephen stamkos rookie card several felix pod van game use gear cards whoa anything's autograph autograph oh yeah i got a few uh you know you know what i got i got a curtis mcculaney rookie card autograph the calgary flames autograph by him by him did you ever imagine it was signed by someone else it's
Starting point is 00:43:39 signed by randy jackson i meant stamped or in person oh no it's well stamped but those ones are more valuable because they're verified they're certified oh okay okay okay yeah see check out the rook this guy doesn't know the collector lingo you don't know how the market works can read would be yeah you don't know how the uh no peachy the card show and milton goes coho is it you make me sick i can read stuff show me the extended cut i need to know who to blame slash praise for what where were you going with the felino trade because shanahan is in the room brooding and saying nothing and i want to know what he was there for yeah no brendan in the video i think gives them the thumbs up to make the pick to do the picks for felina well listen
Starting point is 00:44:31 he hired him he's got to give him the thumbs up but then but then do you think lou gets the thumbs up from islanders man i think lou is the thumbs i think that's a different situation well that's what i'm saying well and i think and i think what happened last year again i keep bringing it up so none of this is to say kyle dubas won't make a big trade um that hagel mark andre flurry deal would have been a game changer for the leafs and for whatever reason that got next i don't know why uh but it would have been a spectacular trade and hagel would have been exactly what they need he would have been a cheaper cali own croak this year you know what i just got a text that was relevant to this conversation hit me uh producer drew who is a shithead uh texted me scott wheeler
Starting point is 00:45:12 uh recently uh recently as in today this morning uh released the draft the drafted nhl prospects rankings he did the top 50 skaters in the top 10 goalies and drew sent me this text elite and untradeable matthew nize is ranked 42 lol there you go listen every fan base and this is another thing you need to remember and you have to look internally and i do this with myself every single fan base every single one all 32 overrate the prospects every one of them especially the ones that are rebuilding yeah because that's all you kind of got yeah hope habs fans you're you're giving me vibes that i once saw in myself i remember writing uh when back when we did the uh top 20 prospects
Starting point is 00:46:16 on the leafs nation.com okay which is the reason i invented the prospect pyramid because 20 fuck all that that was too many it's a lot of prospects the number one ranked forward and i thought he was going to be hot shit josh levo uh what about the uh the piece that you did on andrew nielsen and how the leafs could have found a gem in andrew nielsen dude you and by the way all of those pieces was fortunate right so much about the least because they all did fucking gangbusters well there's nothing all of them there was nothing to read on the leaves at that point because they were so fucking bad 2016 i was one of the like i i was one of the uh highest hit authors on the website
Starting point is 00:46:56 doing features on the likes of defenseman Andrew Nielsen forward Colin Smith remember Colin Smith? I do remember Colin Smith Tobias Lindberg that was a big trade from Ottawa huge fucking trade from Ottawa oh my god and people couldn't get enough of it
Starting point is 00:47:12 like we're talking like well you gotta hang your hope on something I get it with Habs fans right now I'm excited for them and I'm not saying all their prospects are going to be busts they have some murderers uh it looks like i might not you don't know but you also never know what's gonna happen at the end of the day you hope for here's what i wouldn't do though okay what can i tell you i would not do
Starting point is 00:47:35 this and if your gm does this i don't know maybe and maybe i'll live to regret this but cj said on insider trading and i think he expanded on this a little bit um uh with julian cj has another job yeah he was the cj show you ever heard of it yeah um he said the the the teams are just shocked at what yarmo kekalainen is asking for for grabber cough so the asking price in the sport pay attention to it at all hang on let me just give you the asking price before you jump on that because i know you've seen this but i i want anybody that hasn't okay so the three draft picks are they're asking for a first a third and a fourth was at least what one team was told and he is a pending ufa and uh he and his agent have not signaled that they're interested in talking
Starting point is 00:48:21 an extension meaning they're actually not interested in an extent we don't want to talk we're going to the open he doesn't want to go he doesn't want to sign an extension in canada we know that yes yeah i've heard it and i've been enough other people have reported it he's not going to sign again but we're like two three years removed from felino going for a first and two fourths the price has been jacked up to a first a third and a fourth he's a right-handed defenseman no he's not it was left he's left oh jeez i know if he was right you're like oh i get it that's three first but he's left you're like oh that's bullshit that's kevin durant price if he's right absolutely absolutely that's why jake mccabe's going for so much that's where he goes left but
Starting point is 00:49:02 he can go he can play left and right here's the thing with team o'meara objectively good here's the thing with vlad gabricop objectively bad bad isn't over no it's not you know what they had him on you don't think the stats they had him on it was like blocked shots and ice time those are his strengths so he's good at being on the ice and not having the puck is all i had no thank you no thank you you're misunderstanding you're misunderstanding what teams look for at playoff time and and thirst for ben charotte they want they thirst to piss away not just this trade deadline but the next one time on ice is low-key important one of the things i love for columbia one of the things i love about mo cider as soon as he came to the league he's a defenseman who
Starting point is 00:49:48 can play 25 minutes no but that's still a that's still a skill in and of itself being able to soak up time as a defenseman is something that i give props most side to most cider for so if there's an established defenseman who could do that. Like, I'm not going to discredit Gavrikov for being able to do that. On Columbus, I am
Starting point is 00:50:06 because the other guy is like good Branson who sucks and has always sucked and Columbus is like, here's $16 million. He's the third overall pick. He still sucks.
Starting point is 00:50:14 Like, objectively, he's not, like, he's big. He's aging like a fine wine, I guess. He's also exactly what teams look for at the deadline.
Starting point is 00:50:23 They look for Gavrikov. They look for, buddy, someone's going to give up a first for Joel Edmondson. A big guy who has gone far in the playoffs several times. What was the Ben Sherratt deal? Well, it was an unprotected first.
Starting point is 00:50:41 Like, it could turn into... You know what they got? It could potentially be Conor Bedard. Montreal Canadiens general manager Ken Hughes announced on Wednesday that defenseman Ben Sherratt had been traded to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Tyler Similenic, A first round pick And a fourth round pick
Starting point is 00:51:01 So the first round pick is this year The fourth round pick was last draft And the fourth round pick was a New York Rangers draft pick Canadians will also retain 50% of Sherrod's salary For the remainder of the season Damn And 50% retained And they also traded that year for
Starting point is 00:51:16 And he's now in Ottawa Claude Giroux Oh they gave up so much Yeah they gave up a pretty penny for Claude Giroux I think they thought they'd re-sign him and tampa just patted them on their bottom and sent them on their way that series was never close no it was awful it wasn't florida um when they called that the battle of florida i'm like well one half yeah but they won a first round series and that was kind of the goal like well the goals
Starting point is 00:51:42 were the stanley cup but like that's something they hadn't done in forever yeah it's funny i was thinking about our conversation from last show about luke shen yeah and the canucks holding on to him versus trading them and you think i'm nuts for saying they should both of you are not potentially hold on to him yes well well it's funny they move him there was like a squabble at their practice the other day between uh i think it was quinn hughes i think connor garland was involved in dakota joshua yes leaf traffic uh dakota joshua and uh how could they trade him i don't know i have no freaking future proof this team yeah i don't know we gotta think about 10 years from now let's let's always lose in the first round i agree perpetually um so but yes
Starting point is 00:52:21 it'd be great to keep a guy like luke shen to keep the peace and figure it out or you could do what every smart team seems to do at the trade deadline and extort the good ones like hey luke shen you want to stand like up right-handed he's big people seem to like him but people seem to like him oh it's big that matters so underrated that matters well look what happens when they don't they have to fire a coach and hire a new one just to manage one player bank you have to literally reorganize your entire franchise around this one human being and they hired the fired the most
Starting point is 00:52:56 likable man in hockey in Bruce Boutro just so they could make JT Miller there it is you know where Lucien might end up and I think this is Tampa it might I thought initially that he'd go back to Tampa and I was like okay I don't think that's gonna happen where's my other guess I think it might be Boston
Starting point is 00:53:12 fuck it makes sense big defenseman is tough like that just gonna he's he is he's a great locker room guy he is ross boston like when you think about it like he's a ross boston for sure he fits the like in the way that johnny boy chuck did yeah luke shen seems like an important piece that boston got on the way of the cup you know like i can envision why can we envision their in the eastern conference finals and they got luke shen at the deadline everyone's like oh that was a great move and one of their top defensemen's down so luke shen's
Starting point is 00:53:43 play in 25 minutes and we're talking about what a hero he is oh my god what he's gonna make so much money he's gonna be a three million dollar four million dollar i can just see it happening ross boston passes the cup to matt saskatoon which is essentially what luke is by the way let me throw this out there the only thing i did read this later the only reason that i think it makes sense that luke shen stays in vancouver is his wife is due to give birth around the trade deadline oh that that made it much more i'm like okay yeah i i can understand not wanting to be away for the I heard that as well, and some people took it as they're going to move him soon
Starting point is 00:54:18 so that he can get accustomed to the new area, and then his wife gives birth, or they don't move him, so that whole thing goes smooth. Being a hockey player would be the dream, but I have to say, the personal penalty that your family does take,
Starting point is 00:54:34 and I know you're making millions, I get it, but there are some serious sacrifices. You're on the road for, it's like 60 nights a year, and depending on playoffs, it's like 80 100 nights a year you're just not at home not even in your city like you can understand why the caps were like after winning the cup and then it was the covet cup year and they were like fuck this let's get drunk and lose in the first round and then go home like i don't blame them at all i don't blame them at all when you talk about we've we've talked about it on ap
Starting point is 00:54:59 and agent provocateur what a shit situation that was no one really talks about now everybody's in a shit situation they did was just he wrote a great article on it but i don't know if that's really uploaded itself into the psyche there's a lot of that in in the nhl and there's a lot of it i've read in the nba where they look at the bubble trophies as fake trophies oh yeah and they might have been harder trophies than normal i think they're way harder no in basketball i look at as i think most basketball fans look at it as the purest basketball we've ever gotten because all they did was play basketball there's nothing else allowed all these nba players did every day and was play basketball and then in the on the the on-court thing um the out of bounds the out of
Starting point is 00:55:41 the actual basketball was a little better because there was no crowd there was no crowd around the court so you don't have to worry about running over someone anything oh no so the basketball was a little tougher too it's it's one of the it's one of the greatest things i'll witness my lifetime in terms of sports these bubbles playoffs and where are you laughing at you just reminded me of the best chirp of all time where kyle lowry gave out his room number so he could fucking fight somebody does that happen oh god it was someone on oh no boston on the magic no it wasn't during the playoffs it was during the uh regular season portion of it he's like uh 806 is my room number like you read his lips and that is a hundred percent what he's saying and we got
Starting point is 00:56:25 robbed of a true raptors kind of repeat run because they they get they have to go to the bubble you know and that whole thing and um i think i don't think a lot of the raptors guys enjoyed that at all being away and then that bled into the tampa year yeah yeah and then the tampa year was just terrible the next season but um yeah the nhl bubble it was terrible conditions for everybody i think it was completely different experience than the nba players in disney world um people seem to enjoy the toronto bubble and just despise the edmonton one where it was like a jail yard yeah so well and like well what i did what didn't make sense to me there is like the all of the way toronto set up if you're not here is is like all of that is in the right area
Starting point is 00:57:09 for you to be able to do all that stuff in edmonton it's not and it's sort of weird that they're like okay round two's over let's move everybody from toronto to edmonton when you had all the green space and all the stadium and everything. They played in BMO Field. Like, they could just go and that's their outdoor yard. And they could go buy food. That's where that Rod Brendamore meme is from where he's, like, playing Frisbee
Starting point is 00:57:30 topless, looking like a Ninja Turtle. He's jacked. He's honestly just actually like a pale Ninja Turtle. And, yeah, that was at BMO Field. Crazy. Imagine just getting to play Ultimate Frisbee at BMO Field. And the NHL's like, let's hold the finals in Edmonton.
Starting point is 00:57:46 I don't even know the area like down by the uh yeah down by the arena yeah i haven't been to edmonton in a while but it's just it's not it's not edmonton's fault to be clear no it's just like it just the like was edmonton set up for a pandemic was anybody i don't think so i saw edmonton for two days 10 years ago i don't remember it so yeah i remember that uh when you went uh you kept calling it the new dubai the new dubai ed money ed money the new dubai that's what i kept getting told it was called by the people who brought me there that's very funny what a bet yep then get into the action it's sports interaction whatever your sport sports interaction has you covered bet pre-game in-game
Starting point is 00:58:25 or on one of the many unique prop bets head to sportsinteraction.com slash sdbn or in ontario download the app now using our qr code at the bottom of the screen 19 plus please play responsibly so uh i want to ask you guys this so um i made a couple bets before the show For the show Yeah yeah today my two dollars Are you also two dollar Adam You know what I'm two dollaring it Because it makes it fun
Starting point is 00:58:52 It just makes it fun you're like oh I'm going to sprinkle This and a little of that I was one dollar Steve yesterday On three different things and I won them all But I wanted to ask you about this one first And even if you're Not a football fan I want to know if this is stupid And I only could win 62 cents
Starting point is 00:59:09 If I get it right okay um will tom brady ever play another nfl game and the i took the no on that but that is one of the props available with sports interaction and you only get 62 cents off of no on yes it's like five times your money oh it's a tough one right but i actually think this time he's done am i did i pick the wrong thing no i think you're right i i think he's done but but maybe he's not i tell that to the guy that paid two million dollars for his last game used football and then five days later he comes out of retirement oh my god man i got um i got i put a dollar on timo meyer over on 4.5 shots i put a dollar on eric carlson over 2.5 shots and i put
Starting point is 01:00:04 a dollar on sydney crosby over 0.5 assists he had three um let's look at that and this is the part i love the most crosby over i won 87 cents yeah so sydney crosby okay the other one i wanted to ask you guys about because we talked about the connor mcdavid total goals uh i took 65 to 70 goals. That's what I think he's going to get. That pays out a 380. When did you do that? Today. Yeah. Okay. Because he's got 52 in, or he's got, you know, No, no, no. No, it's 52 games. He's in
Starting point is 01:00:41 45 or something like that. It's a ridiculous number. Yeah, he's ridiculously. It's not 52, excuse me. But the other one I took. We've been talking about him chasing down Gretzky. The other one I took, Canadian award sweep. A Canadian to win the Hart, the Norris, and the Rocket this year. So I think the Hart and the Rocket is a lock.
Starting point is 01:00:57 Yeah. It's an absolute lock. Yeah. But the Norris is the one where I'm like, because it's point, it's basically five times. I think it's Eric Carlson. You think so? If he hits 100 points, it'll be the first time since the 90s
Starting point is 01:01:13 that anybody's ever done it. I think you just, you give him the Norris for that. And Adam Fox is also having a great year, of course. And he's American. He's American. And Josh Morrissey is Canadian, I think. Yes. I think so.
Starting point is 01:01:24 Yeah. Like, who's the best Canadian defenseman right now? Well this season it's Josh Morrissey Where's Josh Morrissey from? He's from the Canadian I don't know what province From Calgary
Starting point is 01:01:38 So yeah it's your betting on Josh Morrissey Beating out Eric Carlson Kel McCarr is injured right now too And is on IR Steve's team is hurting because of that I'm winning this week Because I got Timo Meier
Starting point is 01:01:55 But that is not a yes or no It's a yes Do you take it or there is no other answer I don't take it I don't see a Canadian winning You better hope Eric Carlson tails off And then Josh Morrissey surpasses him
Starting point is 01:02:10 Because I think he's a front runner Easily Yesterday Yesterday on Agent Provocateur I had So obviously we know the Marty Walsh situation C.J. and Julian covered it really well on the C.J. show.
Starting point is 01:02:28 Marty Walsh, not Alan Walsh and not related to Alan Walsh, is the labor secretary for the United States of America, which is a pretty big position. Thank you for firing. And he's going to resign that position and join the NHLPA as their new head when Don Fehrer steps down, if that's ever going to happen. Executive director of the board. There it is. So new title. I called Alan and I'm like, I want to do a show on this. I want to do a show on this.
Starting point is 01:02:49 And I want you to give me the four things that the NHLPA needs to do now. what's new director new reset what do we need to do and alan sort of broke them down and it's been interesting watching the reaction because alan talks about like you know the fact that the stars are not engaged in the nhlpa at all like it used to be that when the pa had a meeting the stars the big names the gretzky's little muse would go in the summer they don't come anymore it used to be about two three hundred people that would show up it's now like 30 and so they got to re-engage the the big players and the other one that i thought was interesting there's four different points in this you should check it out but group licensing so the nf the
Starting point is 01:03:32 nflpa makes 300 million dollars a year on group licensing trading cards video games those sorts of things where they sell it wow so the nflpa believe it or not cuts its players a hundreds of thousands of dollars check each of them at the end of each season and the nflpa also takes some of that money and uses it to fund the nflpa yeah which is reinvested and listen not a perfect organization but imagine being a hockey player and getting a gigantic hundreds of that like for some of them not for not not in the same way no i don't even know i don't even know it might be tens of thousands imagine you're a hockey player like some nfl players because there's like 60 guys on the roster are making quote unquote league men so what is that a million
Starting point is 01:04:19 bucks maybe maybe less in the nfl yeah and so those guys sometimes will have paychecks from the nflpa that almost rival what they made that season wow nice and that's a strong union that's a strong well well it was broken in the 80s so maybe not so strong they don't have guaranteed contracts stuff like that oh yeah no that does but it's a financially far more stable union than the anitopia so what i thought was interesting about that is who the fuck is thinking about that like i'm not thinking about that no fans thinking about that no but alan because he's in it thinks about that and i thought i just thought it was a really neat sort of episode and i hope you check it out if you're interested in the in the in that type of stuff it's it's fascinating nuts and yeah
Starting point is 01:05:02 what what other thing that he said was that was fascinating is um the millionaires versus billionaires debate oh yeah like he's like it makes me cringe when people describe it like that because the players are the product here and if if the team's making a billion we break down the numbers sometimes like occasional come up if the leafs have a home game the the the revenue they're getting from that day it's like three million is about i think it's about two two something right now the the players are the thing that brought in that two million dollars yeah i was like and every single game they get that two million dollars and to argue against that they don't deserve a decent chunk of that is ridiculous because it's not like that money's not going
Starting point is 01:05:49 somewhere if you're arguing against the players getting more money that money doesn't just vanish or it doesn't go in the the fans pocket like it's just going back to the team owner so why would you not be on the side of the actual product that they're selling that generated the $2 million in three hours for this one game, why should they not deserve more of that money? So I'm sorry, you are gaslighting our audience into thinking Bruins fans show up to TD Garden
Starting point is 01:06:18 to cheer for Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron and David Pasternak instead of their unending passion for funding Jeremy Jacobs' ice cream empire. right are you serious not more and make more sense that the guy who you're going to watch gets more money than the person who just is in the background and owning it to jump on that to jump on that jesse you remember the part where uh gary betman in that first law in that first real lockout in like 2004 2005 whatever it was he's like he said we're getting a salary cap
Starting point is 01:06:51 because we want to make the nhl more affordable for fans we want to bring down ticket prices thank goodness and as soon as the lockout ended every team raised ticket prices because as alan says ticket prices have nothing to do with player salary no getting back to the star point that's such an interesting thing because you you said gretzky and lemieux used to go to these oh yeah they were the ones and alan talks about this they were the ones that actually created the group licensing because they used to control gretzky used to make all the money from every hockey card he was featured on so did lemieux and they would have made a lot of money and then you'd have like you'd have like ross boston who was there for a cup of tea and he'd make nothing so what
Starting point is 01:07:32 they said was the the nhlpa under bob good now bob suggested this and gretzky and lemieux to their credit said yeah we'll participate in that too and and we're foregoing a hundreds of thousands of dollars every year just so everybody could be in it yeah that was decided that was the like the year of the like eight day lockout those 92 yeah the one going into the playoffs where they're threatening to sit out that was a strike but the strike sorry yes that's when they kind of that's when they got those rights which was genius but when the 2004 lockout happened there was like a power vacuum a little bit because lemieux i believe had just retired again i don't know i think it was 95 he retired but i don't maybe i'm wrong but it was the post gretzky era right so you don't have
Starting point is 01:08:17 this no they were there power they were there in 2004 oh 2004 i thought you said 1990 no so it's the post gretzky era and then coming out of that lockout yes ovechkin and crosby are the kids who the nhl is building the league off of but they're kids well part of the problem though was they bob good now had prepped the players for an 18 month lockout they knew gary was going to going to cancel the year and uh and he told everybody and everybody was on board and then several star players turncoat including jeremy roenick and jerome mcginla and there was a few other players that they were pronger pronger i think was one of them as well there's there's actually a book on it i got the book wasn't it shanee yeah a lot of the star players went behind
Starting point is 01:09:02 the other players back yeah bruce dobig and uh he's a calgary writer money players this is the one you want to read if you want if you really want to know there were players there's a comment underneath the video right now saying name the players uh there it is it's a book it's stating bruce dobigan yeah money players the amazing rise and fall of bob good now in the nhl players association and what's interesting we had bruce on yeah he's there's a whole podcast episode you can listen to with bruce the guy who wrote the book about this subject but what's what's crazy about it on our channel and this is this will shock you all of the players with the exception i think of jerome all of the players who turncoat are now in cushy nhl jobs yep
Starting point is 01:09:47 the executives that they went and did favors for and sided with they kind of hired them a couple years later and this is why it's important for cross i mean crosby doesn't seem like he has the energy for this shit anymore and he just wants to play but it like you see you hear how defeated he was the other day i don't know does what i say even matter that's how he was raised basically in the nhl because uh you know he had all this power but he was 18 and wasn't able to really recognize it so he was beaten down by the older stars of the league this is why it's important for mcdavid and for matthews and for i don't know who are the other bigger stars and some of the older stars kane crosby uh like ovechkin do you guys know the players on the executive board of
Starting point is 01:10:39 the nhlpa no it's like kyle akpozo so i got it here it's ian cole justin falk sam gagne zach hyman kyle akpozo nate schmidt and kevin shattenkirk there's one first line player Zach Hyman Yeah Holy shit Can you read that again Ian Cole Justin Falk
Starting point is 01:11:02 Sam Gagne Zach Hyman Kyle Ocpozo Nate Schmidt And Kevin Shattenkirk Here's a fun game Do you want to do the NBA one now Sure
Starting point is 01:11:10 Do the NBA one Jesse I want to hear this Yeah Holy shit You gotta give me a second Just tip it Dude that's brutal Nothing against the work
Starting point is 01:11:24 That those guys do no but like they would admit to you dude hyman is the he's the third best player on his line yeah and that's and that's not even it's a compliment to him that he's on the line so we got here um yeah and with with the nhl pa it's like what is the average age of those guys like what where are the young stars on that whole list hyman might be the youngest one I think he is Might be the only guy whose age starts with a 2 I don't even know if it does, I think he might be 30 now
Starting point is 01:11:58 Alright, so we got the NBA PA The president, CJ McCollum Andre Iguodala, first vice Harrison Barnes, secretary, treasurer Bismack Biambo, vice president Malcolm Brogdon, vice president Jalen Brown, vice president Kyrie Irving, vice president
Starting point is 01:12:17 Garrett Temple, VP Grant Williams, VP There's stars in there very involved kevin durant lebron jay yes and so it's anyway listen i know this conversation doesn't fascinate anybody it fascinates me all right chris paul long time was uh the president was on that board i think he was the president for a long time but until like recently yes until very recently but he's like 39 right so he's like yeah it's probably time to take it turn it over to somebody you gotta you gotta participate you can't just lay back because you make 12 and a
Starting point is 01:12:49 half million and you got a heated driveway and a solid marble kitchen one thing that uh you'll hear this it's super weird marble marble kitchen if you listen to noxian kax weeks weekly you'll hear this conversation on friday's episode and if you don't you should um but one thing that's happened in the women's game in the women's side of sport is that they've realized that they have all the power as players we're seeing it play out in team canada uh on the women's side with soccer where they know we you guys are nothing without us and look who's right at the forefront of it christine sinclair she's at the end of her career and she knows it and there she fucking is she's not fighting for herself no she's fighting for her peers in the future of the future of her peers
Starting point is 01:13:35 right future of the sport so so that that's happening in the women's games happening on the the hockey side as they're trying to build the league they realize we we're everything all the stars mpp uh nurse night they're they're they're everything that the game is and the men's side hasn't really realized that in terms of hockey the basketball players realize that in the bubble we're talking about when when yannis went to his teammates and said um as the george floyd incidents happens it was yannis and the bucks who said we're not playing tonight you know it's we're we can just not go on to the court if we simply didn't when uh donald sterling um that was going down with the clippers uh chris paul who was a part of that team said we're not going
Starting point is 01:14:14 to play for this owner we can just throw all this shit play and that's how their uniforms at center court and that's how they got him out because they are the actual product these human beings and the hockey players haven't realized that and the connor mcdavid can do whatever he wants because the game is nothing without connor mcdavid austin matthews david poshenok kail mccarr they control everything and they haven't really realized that yet yeah and it's it's because you know what it's a pain in the ass it is it takes a lot of courage to do those things and you gotta sit there in front of the guy the billionaire that cuts your check and go i i'm worth more and they could say and they could say to you i know but you know what i could give you
Starting point is 01:14:52 a nice i could give you a real good job after you retire that's that's important to note jesse that it takes courage to do those things these are very the things that what soccer the women's team is doing right now that is a very courageous yeah and sometimes you know we got a podcast and it's easy to say things sitting in front of a microphone uh it it takes a lot of courage to do those things but also uh like we can't do them the public can't do them the only connor mcdavid is connor mcdavid only austin matthews is austin math and we can want that for you but you have to seize it yeah yes and and we understand that it's difficult for you to do it but only you can do it And to Adam's point, like, he's sitting there with, who owns the, Cates?
Starting point is 01:15:36 Yes, Daryl Cates. He's sitting there with Daryl Cates, and he's like, I make $12.5 million a year. What am I doing fighting? When I'm worth 20, Daryl. But, like, what am I doing fighting with you? Like, Conor McDavid might sit there and say, I live a very happy life making $12 million. $12 million! If one day.
Starting point is 01:15:50 Imagine if you make $12 million. That's crazy. If one day Conor McDavid goes, I'm not showing up. But. Change would happen very fast. He can do that. but it takes a lot of courage and a lot of foresight for your
Starting point is 01:16:01 brothers and sisters in the hockey world who you'd be fighting for like you'd have to realize everything that you can change by just standing up and fighting for your rights and what you deserve. As Alan says paying the bill I was about to ask where did this
Starting point is 01:16:18 conversation come from? These are the discussions you guys had and they're fantastic. Well Alan had I was just there going I don't know anything but I'm interested um that's very interesting alan yeah yeah no it's it's it's been a uh the the amount of knowledge downloaded just in like player labor relations and stuff i didn't you don't realize sometimes what you don't know and i i've been fascinated by this alan's passionate about it again like i
Starting point is 01:16:42 said not everybody is but it but you know what if you care about people being paid fairly you work a job where you feel like i'm not compensated fairly for the amount i'm putting in you can relate to this right um as a hockey fan too like i care that uh the players get paid more than the owners like i'd rather see my money go towards them than do you uh the billionaires into the um i don't know why it's a it's a strange thing that came up but every time i watch the nba and i watch the nfl i do think this but some i think it was mark lazarus that tweeted it he's like oh here come the tweets from hockey fans it goes the trophy goes to the owner first in other sports and they're gonna get mad about it and i was like i was like i do get mad about that
Starting point is 01:17:23 because i don't give a fuck yeah yeah give a shit about the owner they get to give the first speech and they thank god and their family and it's like bro like you weren't on the field like you did pay for this but no there it's backwards in every other league it's weird i think it's weird to want it as the owner as an owner you should 100 if it were me i'd be like take it take it i'll see it later i would like to hold it at some point just because you cut checks doesn't mean you deserve to touch a trophy more than patrick mahomes first more first first yes deserves it i can sign a signature too it takes me longer than you because i'm not good at it but you know slowest autograph it takes me longer than you um you know what is the worst is that we
Starting point is 01:18:06 talk about it on the show that i have a slow signature and then people see it in person and they're like oh you are slow nobody believes us nobody freaking believes us yeah yeah but then there's like you're signing an autograph for someone and they're disappointed or they get to see the bit great feeling so then it's like oh it's real it's real it's funny from the front of the line i think people at the back of the line are like fuck so i'm gonna be here for 45 minutes that's the one thing betman has right is he gives the trophy of the captain yeah yeah absolutely um I want to touch on Jake Chikrin because he was scratched. Gavrikov's not going to play until he's traded.
Starting point is 01:18:45 Chikrin will not play until he's traded, apparently. Now, we were hearing on Sunday that it was almost a done deal with LA. It is now, as of right now, it's 1.36 on Wednesday afternoon, and we still don't have a trade. Wednesday's going up. Wednesday's going up. Do you think it's today? It's a podcast day.
Starting point is 01:19:05 It's today or Friday, Jesse. it's gonna go up right out it's not getting traded tomorrow as soon as you're halfway back to ajax is what's gonna happen you know like the one thing you can you can put your head on your pillow it's not happening thursday that would be too convenient no wednesday or friday it's happening so here's i here's what i'm thinking here's my theory i'm gonna tin foil hat a gm that really wants chikrin found out that the la kings are um were basically had a deal done and then called and said okay fine i'll up it and i think the coyotes played this the smart way and they leaked again tinfoil hat craig morgan might be like you don't know what the fuck you're
Starting point is 01:19:54 talking about that's fine but if i were the coyotes i would have leaked that too and i'd say Shut your pie hole, Craig. Shut your pie hole, Craig. We got to get him a t-shirt. He's got to have a shut your pie hole, Craig, t-shirt. He's got to have that. I want that. I want that.
Starting point is 01:20:08 I hope he sells it. I know he's got his podcast and everything. But what I think happened here, and I think smartly, if you're the Coyotes, you do the exact same thing, is you leak that that trade is done. We're done. And because if I'm the guy, okay, you're the Kings, Jesse, you're Team X. You're the Oilers in this instance. And I am the Coyotes.
Starting point is 01:20:27 Steve and I have a deal. I call X reporter on the side and go, listen, we have a deal, but just throw it out there that we have a deal and that we're not, don't even say that. Actually, what you should say is we're not playing Chikrin till he's traded. LA is the front runner. I've never seen this. And you just leave it and you just let it sit. Jesse's going to call and say, okay, I don't, what are they offering?
Starting point is 01:20:50 And I'm going to say, Jesse, you know, I can't tell you that. And then you're going to say, okay, you see my offer. I'm going to give you more. And then I call LA back and I go, hey, I know we had a deal. but I now have a better deal on the table and there was nothing binding me to that. So I'm going to ask you for more. And LA,
Starting point is 01:21:04 I think is going back and forth going, do we do this? What did people say about the return? The Canucks got for Bo Horvat? They said it was slightly underwhelming, slightly underwhelming. What was the first report that came out after the Canucks made that trade? I don't know.
Starting point is 01:21:19 What was the first that teams who thought they were in on Horvat didn't get a call from the Canucks before they pulled the trigger on that deal? And that is a stupid idea. Teams wanted, yeah, but it's the nature of dealing with Lulee Morello, I guess. But teams did not get that opportunity, or rather the Canucks did not give themselves that opportunity to jack up the price. This is what Kekulainen does. I wasn't surprised at all. He's so good at that.
Starting point is 01:21:48 To see, oh yeah, no, he will sit there and wait. Like, I run the Blue Jackets. What do you think I'm concerned about? Winning hockey games? Fuck that. He'd rather lose Gavrikov in free agency, honestly. Honestly, yes. he would eat it i think uh before simply uh dealing him for less than his price and the
Starting point is 01:22:05 coyotes i mean they're just hoarding draft picks like the apocalypse is coming and it's canned goods the last of us i mean it's all part of our ethos right now it's all anyway uh that they're just sitting there and the i think the extra thing this season and i kind of think uh i kind to think march 3rd is going to be tumbleweed town okay there's incentive for the bad teams to get worse quicker i think you're very right on this and i think it's so good yeah yeah and like i think everybody's trying to get rid of their assets early so they can suck a little longer but here's here's how the coyotes and the blue jackets get to have their cake and eat it too not only do they get to sit there and up their price but they get to keep those guys out of the
Starting point is 01:23:00 lineup making their lineup worse so they are just sitting pretty they're getting everything they want somebody who could really use a first line center is the columbus blue jackets that conor bedard is one hell of a first line center yeah and they're sneakily the front runners right now To get Conor Bedard Why not just make yourself worse And guarantee those 25% odds Imagine consecutive off seasons They get Goudreau and then Bedard
Starting point is 01:23:28 You're Kekulainen, you're Armstrong You get to sit there, scratch these guys And go Until someone calls you with your price And they go fuck it, fine And we're two weeks out The one time of your season where you get to feel like a winner Yeah
Starting point is 01:23:43 It's awesome It's crazy the whole picture of it's it's is is cool um if that's in fact what the coyotes have done good for them would gary betman love or hate if conor bedard went to columbus i think he'd like it i think that's one of his that's one of his expansion teams absolutely he'd like it i think he does have some pride and he doesn't like that healthy players are being held out but i don't think he's too heartbroken that it's arizona and columbus no you think he's chicago he's rooting for that they haven't held anyone out no that's true but over montreal do you think gary's which
Starting point is 01:24:22 one he gives uh montreal or columbus would he rather it go to yeah because one's like the historic franchise it doubles down on the market or you think he likes the american market the way he looks at it is montreal doesn't need to be built it's built yeah that's true that is a skyscraper we got a we got a nice little bungalow in columbus that we'd like to expand on but sometimes you got to polish the crown jewels no offense to columbus yeah he did he gave them the first overall pick last year oh yeah you're right uh columbus uh when was the last time the canadians had a first uh i don't think they've ever had one i don't mean to mean i don't mean to demean the columbus blue jackets or their fans but if you're looking at montreal and you're looking
Starting point is 01:25:02 at columbus which one's the bigger hockey market right that's my point and i think i think arizona is ideally where they would want it to go? I imagine. I mean, of course they do. Of course they do. Columbus is a healthy market. Frankly, Arizona has never been. It's just so funny how Crosby went to the Penguins
Starting point is 01:25:21 at the time they needed it the most. I just think it's funny how. Hear that? It's your money calling. It wants a promotion. Starting point is 01:25:41 Visit scotiabank.com slash H-I-S-A to learn more. Scotiabank. You're richer than you think. Did you guys know that Disney is going to air an animated NHL game broadcast on March 14th? Oh! So, we talk about growing the game. This is a cool idea. And I can't play you the teaser because we don't have access to the in-studio at the moment, but my computer's dead.
Starting point is 01:26:07 The first of its kind alternate presentation will leverage NHL edge positioning data puck and player tracking to recreate the action on the ice as it's happening while featuring big city greens characters, which is a big show skating alongside the animated versions of NHL players. So the real-time animation will be produced in association with ESPN Edge, and there will be ESPN commentators calling the action for NHL Big City Green's classic and Big City Green's talent, including people who actually voice the characters, will be featured in the presentation. It's the first of its kind, and essentially it looks like a video game from about 20 years ago. It's really fascinating. It's kind of a cool idea. And some of you are going to roll your eyes and say this is friggin' stupid. it does amazing numbers oh i bet it does because these cartoon broadcasts uh wasn't it not espn disney nickelodeon nickelodeon did nick does um football games right and like look at it it
Starting point is 01:27:06 doesn't actually look to be i'm looking at the graphics you can see the teaser but like that's how it's gonna look dude that looks cool it looks cool it's a neat idea it's a it's a great way to get uh you know maybe a younger audience involved i'd watch it yeah nick so cb cbs and nickelodeon are owned by the same parent company and they they air a couple football games every every year like every week they'll have a kid's game and like nate burleson like hosts it and they're like they get slimed like the players and stuff it's it's really cool it's a kid's kid's broadcast for nfl games really fun right this is an opportunity to do a callback to something from last episode uh that i did not expand on and you were mad about remember that that when
Starting point is 01:27:48 we were talking about vr and no i don't want to talk about that reality you guys thought it was the dumbest thing in the world no i thought it was cool oh no vr is vr is silly you look goofy you do look goofy okay no no but this was a misunderstanding of what you were misunderstanding what augmented reality is yeah yeah so it's like complimentary as i understand it so i wore these i wore a device on my head but it wasn't as clunky as the friggin clean xbox that you got to put on your head like for the oculus or whatever sure which they make great games it's super cool it's just you look like a bit of a silly goose sometimes so i'm wearing these glasses it's a prototype it's not available to the public and i'm watching the game in front of me the glasses
Starting point is 01:28:40 are obviously see-through they're like regular glasses but the players are skating around and i can highlight the the game i saw was leafs boston it was the last game of the season i'm able to highlight the bruins i'm able to highlight the leafs if i want to focus on timothy lilligren i'm able to select timothy lilligren on my phone they're hooked up to my phone i'm able to if i get bored if i'm a kid i'm wearing these i get bored i'm able to fire pucks at the ref nice i can fire pucks at the ref i can make carlton the bear come out of center ice with lasers mid-shift i'm able to get stats from players between whistles and it just appears on my face and oh the the the game has started again i'm able to turn it off this shit when it
Starting point is 01:29:27 hits the public is going to do is going to be gangbusters the technology is good just to be clear you love augmented reality but you hate virtual reality i don't hate virtual reality the shit i was wearing looked way cooler who cares what you look like while you're wearing the device it doesn't matter it made it could make the experience better it 100 could make the experience better it can make the sport easier to understand there could be functions added to it i'm telling you it's coming not just to hockey but to all sports and it's friggin sick and the player tracking technology which is very cool it's well so very cool the technologies are very similar for the the the cartoon broadcast for this augmented reality and for you know you're
Starting point is 01:30:18 you're wondering oh is it sticky is it glitchy no one to one smooth as peanut butter it's it's fucking awesome that's cool yeah peanut butter these these alternate broadcasts and these virtual and these augmented realities they're great innovations and people should keep doing it like even stuff even little stuff like watch this uh leaf scan with steve dangle like that's sidecast the manning cast like all these things are very creative ideas you can do a traditional broadcast and we're gonna keep developing and piling onto it where we get to the point where those things are commercial grade your your augmented reality that you got the exclusive with steve dangle preview of uh will be available to everybody i love that kind of stuff on i think
Starting point is 01:30:56 it's cool shit on the more on the business side as well diamond sports holding which owns valley sports regional sports networks has officially skipped its 140 million dollar debt payment it enters a 30-day grace period uh will according to maury brown who is a um report no maury brown is a senior contributor for forbes uh also work for usa today and fan graphs and baseball america um will undoubtedly file for bankruptcy on the heels of at&t sports net rsn's paying less for the rockies astros and pirates earlier this week thomas trance retweeted this valley sports is the regional broadcast partner for 12 nhl teams uh so not national games but local games uh it is going to be very very interesting um and maybe i'm wrong about the caps going the cap going up uh because
Starting point is 01:31:43 if 12 teams lose their regional sports rights then hrr hockey related revenue is probably going to go down that's why i know you keep talking about it adam but i can't help but go yeah yeah yeah every time you bring it up he's gonna be like okay it's going up a million yeah no he'll tell you one thing that is technically true at the time and uh yeah but the situation changed so ah we're just gonna have to keep the cap at 45 mil or whatever it is 20 20 lowers it just canadian yep we're gonna have to pay the players in canadian dollars this year hope that's okay let's do this let's do the uh press conference the steve dangle press conference
Starting point is 01:32:33 Leafs play the Blackhawks tonight Matthews is back what is your prediction for the final score as we are in the future right now in Chicago
Starting point is 01:32:53 or in Toronto that's a good question if it's in Toronto and Samson Ozenet it should be an auto win toronto it's in toronto i hope they run the fucking score up like dude you're rested you essentially have not played hockey games this month my channel is dying the leafs essentially have not played hockey games in february you're rested you got your big guy back you should kill this team kill them did they play
Starting point is 01:33:27 last night the blackhawks yeah i think they did oh my god uh let me see it was montreal wasn't it i thought they played oh yeah they lost four nothing to montreal oh man it's come on it's a 5-4 leafs loss in ot guys the 5-4 leafs loss in ot this is from yes i just did it to make steve no no and like no because like domi's back in town he's gonna score three goals Gets his hometown team Oh my god Mrazik shut out Mrazik shut out
Starting point is 01:33:56 Mrazik's not in net What a story He's not? Who's in net? Oh Peter Mrazik Is in net It says expected I wonder if he's
Starting point is 01:34:02 The first goalie Off ice Bet on Mrazik Bet on Mrazik Oh my gosh Yeah no If Mrazik's in net This is a loss
Starting point is 01:34:09 Under 20 shots I'm taking that bet I hope sports interaction Has it This is one of those games Where like maybe the video Is I let you freak out You sent me a crowdfunded
Starting point is 01:34:18 Chicago Yeah I'll just be like I can't win ever again It's perfectly acceptable To lose to a tired Chicago Blackhawks team Next question Jesse No I hope they run them out of the building
Starting point is 01:34:31 I hope so too Since 2006 Only three teams Have been heavier favorites In a game in terms of the betting line You're kidding Since 2006 So Toronto is that much of a favorite
Starting point is 01:34:49 to win the game tonight oh my god oh my god matthews will be back peter morazic matthews is back i mentioned that um peter morazic uh will looks like gonna be starting he's the expected starter um yeah putting some money on chicago gonna be fun uh along the same matthews leafs route cheese supreme wants to know if the cap goes up by two to three million dollars ish yeah what's your prediction for matthews's next contract uh i think he's had a number in his head for a while and i think that number is 15 i think we've all had 15 um i think that's what he's going to ask for and that's what he's going to get and if you're the leafs you set aside 15 million dollars knowing that you're going to get year in and year out one of the best players
Starting point is 01:35:41 in the league i agree and that's what it costs yeah it's pam that you're not that you're there's a handful of players in the league where you go just pay him yeah he's one of them yeah adam that's your number as well absolutely yeah if that's what he wants you just give it to him the conversation starts with him yeah i'll find somebody else that i pay 700 grand for that's the gm's job like naturally you're gonna be like but what about mitch and what about willie and what about it starts with austin starts with austin and then honestly mitch's contract isn't up so we don't have to think about mitch but i i think this team starts and ends with mitch marner and austin matthews and the way mitch has played this year if his contract was up
Starting point is 01:36:17 i couldn't fault him for asking the same i couldn't how could you he's been unbelievable he's been extremely good one of the better two-way players in the entire league i don't know sets up everybody for goals kills penalties mitch marner's been unbelievable too yeah i think 15 million 15 five something like that it wouldn't be shocked oh i think i think to uh what's going to be very interesting 15 was fine 15 5 was a bridge too far i don't know i i'm curious about the conor mcdavid number and that's up in what three years four years that is going to be a number and i wonder like matthews i think when he signs this extension we'll be on pace to we'll see if he gets there be the highest paid player in the league
Starting point is 01:36:59 but like by a considerable amount and then i wonder if conor mcdavid says basically you know wayne gretzky me i want to be the highest paid player and i want to be the highest paid player for a while yeah or no or he goes no i want to win the i want to win the yeah yeah not if tyler sagan has something to say about it who is actually in real dollars i think the highest paid player in the nhl how much is he making real dollars this year i don't have it in front of me that's no i forgot you don't have a computer yeah in terms of actual money just because of the way it's structured yeah i was saying it's highest paid player you guys still love that stat yeah i the um should go to cap friendly and just sort by contract the stat
Starting point is 01:37:39 is the sabers i can't remember if it was the highest paid player or highest paid defenseman but they had the highest paid defenseman in the league back-to-back years and it was two different guys oh tyler myers one year what and christian erhoff the next whoa just because they gave him a bunch of cap uh cash up front look look it up wow look it up tyler myers was once the highest pay defense defense christian erhoff if if i remember correctly this was before or those contracts it was one of the pre they changed the rules contracts where you were able to front load the shit out of it i want to say myers made 12 and erhoff made 10 uh tyler sagan has a base salary of five a signing bonus of 8 13 million and that's the second year in a row he's had that
Starting point is 01:38:27 The Stars had to give him 8 million bucks on July 1st. Yeah. Holy shit. 13 million dollars. You know what's funny? The Leafs had to give up more than that to three different players, I think. Wow. Wow.
Starting point is 01:38:43 Go look up the structure of Matthews and Tavares and Marner's contract. I would like to end the show by saying that the New York Rangers have won five games in a row and have not lost since acquiring Vladimir Tarasenko. You know what? You guys haven't had the stones to say it, but let me be the first member of the Steve Dangle podcast to say, for the New York Rangers, I think it's cup or bust. The Steve Dangle Podcast.
