Starting point is 00:00:00 Sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where TaskRabbit comes in and I think you should check this out because here's the deal. One of the things, one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows. And their way around on that is like, well, it's a patio window, you can do that yourself. And I'm like, well, hang on a second. What if I don't want to? I don't have the stuff because you got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing.
Starting point is 00:00:28 The chemicals, you got to have the right chemicals. see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list 15 off your first task at taskrabbit.ca or on the task rabbit app using the promo code Dangle. Starting point is 00:02:01 of data it was like 16 bucks usd and then i used the code dangle for 15 off and it was like 14 bucks see me and my ridiculous phone provider wanted to charge me like 75 for like a week of of being there i was gonna say idiot me because i was in europe for five days uh did not use sailing they charged me 18 a day a day yeah this was 14 bucks for the whole week and like i didn't go over three gigabits of data because there's like wi-fi everywhere and everything so you don't really use data that much but it was so convenient it's actually awesome i love sailing and what's amazing about that the public wi-fi thing is you yes you can use the public wi-fi anywhere you go it's not necessarily secure but sailing's backed by nord security so you're not worried with their
Starting point is 00:02:48 5 000 plus servers out there uh about your data leaking so much which is kind of nice right yeah kind of nice to have hey steve do you use saly by the pool i i didn't go anywhere but i i'm glad that at least one of my friends used this fine product is ajax so far from downtown toronto that it applies roaming fees to your phone bill honestly it used to be long distance i'm pretty sure. Oshawa was. When I moved there, you know how sad I was for that discovery? But it's not anymore. And if
Starting point is 00:03:21 I was at a place that needed something, I would get Saley. I would get Saley. Alright, now here's the deal. If you want the deal, the deal is this. We want you to go to a specific URL, which I'm pulling up and I'm tap dancing and here it is! Go to Saley,
Starting point is 00:03:37 S-A-I-L-Y dot com slash dangle and use the code dangle! Much easier, just download the saley app and then use the code dangle in the app that's how i did it's so easy you'll get an exclusive 15 off your first purchase unlike idiot moron me hi welcome to the season let's get started baby hello and welcome back and i love starting the season with this because this is the third straight year we've had the pleasure to announce a live show in September at the Course and Clubhouse in St. Catharines, which is always like one of the best shows of
Starting point is 00:04:24 the year. The energy is electric in there. It's crazy. And obviously it's St. Catharines Hub for indoor golf, five HD golf simulators. Yes, we will have a best drive competition. Jesse, did you win it last year? Yes. Last year we gave it to the person who came in second because nobody beat my score and would you remember what your score was it was pretty good no i think we have it on video we like we made a tiktok of all of us swinging oh it's not bad i want to say you crossed 300 oh yeah yeah it's like oh yeah but it's also a simulator it's a little juiced it's not it's not really real life so it's not it's not you go but adam you on our video i think you like hit your foot or yeah i think so you missed the ball and you like hit
Starting point is 00:05:07 your own have i told you how much i fucking hate golf because i fucking it was quite impressive on how badly it is uh 40 real courses in these 5hd golf simulators obviously they've got the full kitchen and bar and there's like 200 plus people there who are rowdy and crazy and amazing uh love saint catherine's love the show odr hockey heroes will be back for the display and play which they are every single year which is amazing ticket sales are officially live at this moment so it's $25, $200 available. They sold out each of the last two years, so you're going to want to make sure you get your ticket.
Starting point is 00:05:43 And by the way, it's in the link in the description of the video or of the audio show, whatever you listen, you can get your tickets right now. And the refreshing part, there will be some triple bogey in the house, as in the beer. Triple bogey is really good. I don't know if you guys like beer, but we like beer. I've never heard of it.
Starting point is 00:05:59 Triple bogey premium lagers and iconic cocktails are a hit both on and off the fairways, swing by the clubhouse, and crush a triple bogey, its newest hydration sensation, Water Hazard, the chill blue cocktail, is making huge waves. Yeah, I've never actually had their beer.
Starting point is 00:06:16 I've only had like the seltzer-ish one. I don't think I've tried the seltzer. I've had the beer. Oh, there you go. So I'm going to have to try it out. Yeah, check it out. Obviously, it's all available right now. And we want to start the season
Starting point is 00:06:28 with some huge news. Leafs third string goaltender, Dennis Hildeby, is staying for three more years. Let's go, Dennis. Yeah! Three-year deal. News!
Starting point is 00:06:40 That's nuts! And pre-show news, too. Holy shit! Dennis Hildeby News! And the contract carries. This is a Bradshaw Living special. Beastly News! You look like the guy in your shirt.
Starting point is 00:06:54 Go to the net where Dennis Hildeby lives. Yeah! His cave that he barely fits in because he's so tall. He is huge. Six foot seven? Or is he one of the bigger guys? he's six foot seven they're all six foot seven is there aren't stallers in wall six foot seven two no walls six two or three walls a little shorter oh he's a little bigger than wall when
Starting point is 00:07:16 we're both in shoes you do well do you tell him that i do every day you're like hey man make sure he doesn't forget it okay all right good i do the too small i walk into the leaf dressing room every day hey joseph joey joey wall yeah and because of joseph wall he's like huh you're right anyway i'm gonna play the piano now uh uh sorry uh hilda b he's tall is 24 years old 30 regular seasons with toronto he's got a 16 9 and 4 record 255 goals against average 908 save percentage and two shutouts that's pretty good for a third string goalie um he had two shutouts yeah in the nhl yeah yeah apparently like in his oh no that's the marley's record talking about no no his thing was he was quite good uh with the marley's uh no this is a really
Starting point is 00:08:01 good contract i'm pulling for him 841 by the way he has six games in the nhl it's a lot different than 30 yeah yeah six games in the nhl positive that's wrong um he struggled at the nhl level he had a really good first game and he never found it after that 878 save yeah really bad game against columbus and that just sort of kept going well i was going to ask if somebody would claim him but i don't think with nhl numbers like that that they will well he's he's young and huge and was an ahl all-star the year before um like was really good this is this is a good contract for him this contract gives him the best chance of making the nhl but at the end of the day the number one thing that's going to help you make the nhl is being good at the nhl level yeah well
Starting point is 00:08:48 it starts with the ahl level and then the nhl right yeah but good to have and $841,667 our first 67 record why did it have to be that it had to be that and i i think it's interesting brad has done this with several guys simo ben was the one i think that's worked out the best uh bobby mcmahon is another guy that you know signed long term on a on a very low aav deal leafs are looking for very clearly um guys who can come up and be a guy in case we lose a guy injury pre-agency trade whatever it is and let's make them as cost efficient as possible well they don't have a security blanket right now um usually i mean that's been matt murray um he gone he gone um they've tried to get other guys in recent years there's the rare example of like uh askarov
Starting point is 00:09:43 uh wallstead in minnesota um guys who who sign for you know a couple mil yeah even though like they're essentially they they haven't done anything right uh he'll be i mean i don't know this is this is just a three-year nhl contract which like in in order for him to get more he's gonna have to prove it right and i i look at there's a graphic that was floating around in late august and i love this i hate you for retweeting uh mark hussey uh who is a hockey content creator for the bruins said most wins by a maple leafs drafted goaltender and of course that's tuka rask with 308 the next is felix pod van at number two 266 ken reagan reggett excuse me at 225 james reimer at 225 so he'll pass surpass ken reagan this year by the way that's
Starting point is 00:10:34 not for the leafs that's total just you were drafted by the leafs and this is your career Yeah. And Mike Palm is here at 149 run low at 102. Damian Rhodes at 99. Like this is not like Damian Rhodes is on that list. Yeah. Alan Bester at 73. Jeff Reese, who was Damian Rhodes and then Felix Potvin's backup 53 and Joseph Wall is 48. So Joseph Wall is already top 10 all time in Leafs goalie drafted wins, which is insane. And I think I think that wow, that that's a that's an organizational weakness, I would say. Not good at this. Wow. Yeah, isn't that nuts? Reimer's what? Fourth? Yeah, he will be third probably by November if he's playing.
Starting point is 00:11:21 I don't know. I don't think he's signed. I don't know about that. I mean, listen, Steve Eisenman still has time. Plus, even if he is signed somewhere, he's going to be a backup, and he'll probably get a couple games, right? Yeah. I don't know if he's going to get up into that.
Starting point is 00:11:32 Is he the new third string? I wonder somewhere. The Ducks and Blackhawks already have three multi-million dollar goalies each, So they, you know, maybe could use a fourth. Exactly. Exactly. Did you guys notice that Hildeby needed a contract? Nope.
Starting point is 00:11:46 He signed this contract because he was unsigned. He was an RFA. They control his rights, obviously. Nobody can else than sign him. But he was not signed to Leaf Steel. So this isn't a year ahead of time. No, this is for this season. He was an expiring RFA, like currently.
Starting point is 00:12:01 Nope. Yeah, I did not know. So I was looking at it because I was like, okay, who else is unsigned that we're not aware of? Topi Nyamala is unsigned. He's gone to Europe. And he's gone to Europe. SDA's unsigned.
Starting point is 00:12:12 He's gone as well. He's long gone. He's long gone. They maintain his rights. Roni Hervin. Gone. Also gone to Europe. Also gone.
Starting point is 00:12:19 So he was the last one of their RFAs that's going to probably stick around, right? So we got to change the shirt. What is the shirt? The shirt's just Brad. No yelling. No exclamation marks. Just period. Oh, you got the mug.
Starting point is 00:12:34 I got the mug. Yeah. No, no, no, no, no, no. take out a bunch of those a's brad yeah brad did his job there it is how about good for you brad a new mug sdpshop.ca we actually have a bunch of merch and stuff you can go buy a brad mug and a go to the net shirt go to the net this is so silly to wear you look like you're in pain you look like you're in genuine pain on that shirt i probably am i think that is the same image that was used on a sign when you were uh somebody brought the go to the net sign yes to
Starting point is 00:13:07 the playoff game oh during the playoffs yeah and they were on the jumbotron with the sign with your face on yeah yeah yeah i think it's the same face incredible uh yeah so dennis dennis hildeby is a toronto maple leaf for three more years hooray maybe we'll see maybe well he's the only rfa that i'm aware of in leaf's history that hasn't had rumors swirling about a uh an offer sheet so i am proud i am proud that dennis hildeby made it through all the rumors and you know you know there's some insider there's some insiders gosh dennis forgot hildeby dennis it's goldies are at the bottom they're at the bottom on puckpedia he's at the bottom that's right that's right now he was eligible for an offer sheet that's that's a factual 100 percent like somebody could offer
Starting point is 00:13:52 this is supposed to be the summer of the offer sheets jesse uh that would have been ridiculous as alan always says though they're not making the offer sheet offer until they know they're getting the player yeah and that's that's from now on by the way uh that's what we're doing we're not buying this bullshit line that there's gonna be a bunch of offer sheets i think with the cap going up and alan made this this uh comment on the last show we did uh we're doing a new agent provocateur this week so that comes back this week too um he said if the salaries if the salary caps up and everybody's got space it actually lessens uh the the chances that you're going to get an offer sheet because the guys are like well why would i make the offer and get him signed for
Starting point is 00:14:33 another team that sucks like i don't want to do that why would i not match it 100 because the cap is going up the value of those draft picks the compensatory draft picks goes down exactly why am i doing that are we gonna talk about how everyone lied oh everyone lied everyone just completely reality nobody faced reality over the course of the summer and they everybody in the nhl world all of these insiders everybody who knows the game like steve dangle and elliott on the same level they peddled this narrative about how this summer this summer coming soon all the trades across the nhl this summer coming to summer slam like nobody showed up to summer slam not a single deal of consequence done it's the ducks versus this team because they've got
Starting point is 00:15:25 37 million yeah yeah no like nobody showed up to do anything nope what happened i want answers from the people who said this was gonna be the summer that all chaos breaks loose i don't i don't recall being that Steve. I don't recall being that person. I was a person up over a month ago going is Brett
Starting point is 00:15:44 Leeson available? Are the Leafs interested in Brett? I think his first name is Brett. Yeah, it is. Last name is Leeson. Double check that.
Starting point is 00:15:52 I got a double check. And you wanted Matt Luff for some reason. Yeah, because he's lovely and also a noted Alan. Yeah, you kept Steve kept texting Alan being
Starting point is 00:16:01 like Alan. What's the word on Matt Luff? Alan just stopped answering him. Like, we have a group chat, and I was like, I'm not going to fucking talk about this. Getting ghosted by Alan is so fun. It's so funny.
Starting point is 00:16:12 Because Alan will talk to us. He will talk to you. And, like, the first Matt Love joke, he laughs. Yeah. The second one, he's like, all right. All right. The third one, he's like, fuck off, Steve. By the way, Steve, before we get into this Marner-Ferris stuff.
Starting point is 00:16:25 What? What happened? I have a serious question about this. Do you guys have opinions on why the GMs sat on their hands despite having the most cap space they've ever had during their NHL careers? Yes. I think, okay, remember how utterly boring
Starting point is 00:16:43 the Seattle expansion draft was? Yeah, yeah. And it was funny how we all knew all the picks beforehand. We all knew. Someone couldn't let it just happen. Yep, you know, you know. It was boring because teams were afraid of making mistakes. The same mistakes that they made with the Vegas Golden Knights draft.
Starting point is 00:17:08 This year, with some of the July 1st signings, we all went, oh, shit, what? Like, it wasn't just, oh, that's a bit of an overpay. Oh, it's, you know, he's a UFA. I can understand. some of the contracts signed were from the moon from the asteroid belt from i don't even know like what part of the solar system and i think that raised flags and also they're just like who you're spending the money on who's available i am a bit surprised by the lack of creativity in the trade market the trade market is what's supposed to open that up right yeah if mitch
Starting point is 00:17:47 marner's the big free agent he's off the board and everybody else is off the board everybody resigned these gms with this cap space were supposed to get creative and none of that happened and like you know i know producer hayden is dying to talk about marco rossi oh yeah i mean it's on the show lineup for yeah if it doesn't make it in today we're doing it tomorrow like we said from the beginning like the easy thing to do is just everyone stay together yeah for the kids yeah and the kids are minnesota wild fans and they're staying together for the kids i i did the one that stood out to me guys uh about that question jesse the name the name i keep coming back to is brock besser i know he wanted to stay in vancouver so that's the that's the
Starting point is 00:18:27 obvious well he wants to be there okay so that makes it easy but i also look at brock besser and go if he'd actually made it to open market like i i know the wild were right in they wanted him he's from there there's one team there's a bazillion teams that would you know there was the rumor that the Canucks just would not go to eight and inevitably they did not go to eight right they didn't go to eight they went to seven seven five oh um and remember but I think had he made it once Marner's off the board on June 30th I think you look at that and go well shit I'll put eight and a half on Brock Besser and cross my fingers and toes like that's that and I know that's only a $750,000 golf in terms of AAV yeah but that could have been marquee signing guy right
Starting point is 00:19:11 I mean because he's a good person yeah he's a great player when and the only the only question you have with him is his health you're gonna overspend on free agents yeah and I know like Nikolai Ehlers for example is like a darling in some pockets of analytics big and I love him I love him wow that's a lot he makes a lot of yeah but the Carolina Hurricanes needed to do something like that they also have the space yeah they needed to do that though yeah and he wanted them and they wanted him that that felt like it was like inevitable in february i mean it's from the day he was drafted he is yeah he's a born eric tolsky guy yeah like eric tolsky was probably there at the birth going that's my dude feisty yeah good underlying numbers not finished but
Starting point is 00:19:59 looks it yes true does have a finished look he does have a finished look danish sorry yeah can't have everything no can't have everything right and the carolina hurricanes compromised they said you know what yeah we'll get someone who's not finished yeah and we'll give them big money just this once just this once yeah oh they'll never do it again yeah sorry sorry denmark not forever this is not a no freddie anderson was his advocate yep yep and they have they've cornered the market i think on nhl dane yeah two is enough two of two two is enough uh i think uh i do think jesse you're correct i i automatically and cj sort of warned us about this he was like guys just be prepared like you think you're taking vacation in august you might not be and we could have literally
Starting point is 00:20:45 been uh had all of our phones off and we wouldn't have missed any not a thing not a thing for four weeks listen jesse the marco rossi news was huge oh that happened a couple days ago yeah exactly when we're coming back it's already it's then it's happened yeah like three weeks it was dead there were two or three days where i did that thing where i was just like refreshing twitter way way way too much the moment i disengaged boo i powered down this august the way i've never powered down like yeah i i mean i couldn't read anything there was nothing to read you'd be you'd be reading nothing yes yeah there was nothing to read now yeah 32 thoughts did like an august check-in or something and i was like about what i didn't even i i didn't even i'm
Starting point is 00:21:28 usually all over that i was like i just don't care i didn't even also we did shows right up until their little mid-summer check. And I'm like, my summer hasn't even started yet, you assholes. It was kind of short. I'm joking. Oh, yeah, Kyle Bukowskis and Elliott Friedman. Yeah, Kyle Bukowskis and Elliott Friedman, two dicks. Catch these hands.
Starting point is 00:21:47 Kyle, catch these hands, Bukowskis. I've met and looked up at Kyle Bukowskis. He would catch both these hands in one of his. Could not be a lovelier guy. No, he's very nice. But, yeah, no, I think it was nice. And I was talking to Alan a little bit about it, because Alan went away
Starting point is 00:22:03 and he goes on a European vacation with his family and stuff. Oh, is that why he stopped answering my texts? No, I don't think it was. I think it was Matt Love. No, because you were trolling him. He's also, like, busy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:14 You know, like, we ask him legit questions. He's like, well, here's how the league would look at this and the PA would look at this, whatever. And Steve's like, hey, Alan, lovely day for a signing with the Leafs. And he's like, what the fuck is Alan Walsh going to say to that? But I should go back and look at that.
Starting point is 00:22:30 But Alan mentioned, he's like, listen, Like, a lot of them just go on vacation. Like, we hadn't considered that. But, like, mid-August, they're all on vacay, man. That's insane. I disagree. What do you mean they're not focused on hockey all year round? Yeah, no.
Starting point is 00:22:42 Like, it may just be that the GMs want their one month off this year. And they all just went on vacation at their cottages. And as someone who has to build our schedule, we all have to build our schedule around them. I need them to keep taking that time off. Because I need it. Because we're all so off. Yeah, because I feel so much better now. So much better.
Starting point is 00:23:00 All right. On July 7th, Matt Luff back with the Blues. The dream is dead. Oh, he signed that early. This didn't even go on that long. He's got good representation, Justin. You notice, though, that Alan still isn't talking to Steve, huh? No, he's not.
Starting point is 00:23:18 He's not. No, and I also text him in all caps when any one of his clients sign. Yes. Sorry, on July 1st. In the middle of like free agent frenzy, it's not even three o'clock. I just go, oh shit, fax. Stop.
Starting point is 00:23:38 All right. We were working when I sent that. Oh, sorry. All right. Sometimes life throws your curve balls and you don't have time to get to them. And that's where TaskRabbit comes in. And I think you should check this out
Starting point is 00:23:47 because here's the deal. One of the things, one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows, but they never clean my windows. Uh-oh. and their way around on that is like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like

Starting point is 00:25:28 week um i was like i'm like the one thing i was hoping for and i'm sorry oilers fans i'm gonna do this to you as a person who loves a good storyline crosby getting traded to the oil crosby getting traded to the oilers uh would be great uh but and i saw tsn put up a graphic of crosby in a leafs jersey um this summer i'm like damn you guys are going for that summer content bump i respect and appreciate it i i was like if we can make it to september 2nd and mcdavid remains unsigned i'm like that's what we're leading the show with and he's now and then he even talked about it and i was like whoa this is great and then uh mitch marner and darren ferris both gave interviews within a week of each other essentially saying the same thing days and and so we got to start
Starting point is 00:26:20 with that and i know there are a lot of non-leaf fans that listen to this podcast i know there are a lot of leaf fans that listen to this podcast um and i could tell you just if you're from an outside market i could tell you most leaf fans are just tired of this and want to move on oh no no no no no no this segment is for non-leaf fans oh i think it is yeah no no no you guys got a lot to say let's talk yeah okay let's talk so it started with darren ferris uh doing an interview with uh john shannon and darren millard uh on 100 hockey which is a great hockey podcast that's done through the nhl and i thought that was interesting because i'm like this is a hockey podcast that is quite literally housed on the nhl website um doesn't millard work with the golden yes he does
Starting point is 00:27:03 yeah yeah he uh he moved down there after a few years ago yeah when i think when they launched or something like he's been there a while which is crazy might be an inaugural guy yeah anyway him and gary lawless i think because lawless was at tsn but um anyway long story short jesse i've sent you the link through on the nhl site i want to start with uh at 12 44 the podcast because um there he get darren ferris who is obviously mitch marner's agent well known in this market um talking about social media and the mainstream coverage that playing for the Leafs can take on a family now he he makes sure to couch it in well this can happen anywhere but we know it's the Leafs and we know it's particularly pointed so let's have a listen to how he answers that
Starting point is 00:27:54 question because I think it's a really good one but it's not that glamorous isn't no it's not you're not there you know when there's those calls late at night or uh whether it's from a player or a family uh you know you it's a lot different than most could imagine and uh i know it sounds like it is but there's the trials and tribulations there's the you know the anxiety from players you got to control and uh there's a lot of ups and downs and even at night thinking about it and even in mitch's deal i wanted that to go to free agency and do the whole dog and pony show he didn't want to do it but um i was all set to do it and uh but we didn't end up uh we ended up getting a result that he's happy with well now that you brought it up we can ask it um uh how
Starting point is 00:28:45 do you i mean this was a noisy noisy year for mitch marner and for you i thought that was an how did you manage that well one part people don't always see is the toll the social media mainstream coverage can take on a player and their family you know mitch went through years of that at the end of every season instead of being able to breathe and reset and his family were bracing for the storm um you know the negativity the blame the hate uh it was just directed at him and spilled over to other people closest to him uh that creates a dangerous environment and there were even times where you know police had to be involved um uh through it all you know mitch showed incredible strength uh but at the end of the day he's more than a hockey player he's a
Starting point is 00:29:35 son a brother and now a new father you know to a young boy and uh protecting that side of him has always been just as important as negotiating the contracts when it comes time to make a decision about his future it wasn't about chasing the last dollar he had opportunities to make more money elsewhere but you know what mattered to him was finding a place you know he could focus on playing the game he loves you know where's family so obviously that's sort of the the start of because you know they do a little preamble that's sort of the start of the mitch marner contract stuff and i think what is interesting there and you're going to see this sort of play out throughout in these in some of these answers and i'm only going to take two or three of them um is the they talk
Starting point is 00:30:30 about the noise or shannon mentions the noise they talk about how hard it can be on the family and how and i thought this was interesting well there was never a break and later on one of these answers and i forget which one he's going to mention oh it always happened at the end of the season it always seemed to happen at the most at the end of the season and lee fans know why um and we will i want to move to the next quote because at 1502 there jesse um how much did the noise play into him leaving and they go into a very specific story which we also talked a little bit about on the show in the spring when it happened okay vegas and how they treat um you know the players and their families too and once he knew that his mind was made up at the end of
Starting point is 00:31:18 the season and uh you know from my perspective as an agent i i would have preferred him to go through the full process sit down with multiple teams and explore every option but for him it was clear he didn't want to go through that as i said dog and pony show and uh go to free agency when he already knew where he wanted to be. Safety for his family and being in the right environment mattered most. And my job at that point simply was to support his decision and help him get there. At the end of the day, his focus now is entirely on what's ahead,
Starting point is 00:31:51 and he believes Vegas is the right place for him, and his energy is on helping that team win. Are you able to put a percentage, if you could, on how much of a factor the noise and the environment in Toronto played in this? You know, I think it accumulated over the years. This wasn't something that was just new. This was going way back and then going through the Babcock fiasco. And there were other things that are not public I'm not going to bring out.
Starting point is 00:32:22 And it was just constant negativity and misinformation in the public. And then, you know, you can't blame the fans. They react to what they hear. And sometimes it's misinformation. And, you know, we really couldn't go out and attack every, you know, every message that was out there that was incorrect. You tried. You just give those people credibility.
Starting point is 00:32:50 So, and it just creates a bigger storm. So, you know, it was difficult. It was difficult to manage. It was difficult to get through. You know, the wrong messages, I think, were out there, especially on social media. It was, it was an attack on myself personally, like you get death threats, you get, it's, it's unbelievable. You wouldn't believe the kind of visceral hate there was out there. so um you know when you hear those two clips you go okay all right like he he got tired of the the fan pressure um and i think uh i it sounded like there are two guys that there was uh an allusion to organizational issues meaning you know he said the babcock stuff and there were other things but i won't get into them meaning it's always good to let people use their imagination what's happening here is there is a painting of certainly fans and he does go on later in the interview to say i don't mean all the fans i mean some you know the crazies or whatever uh and and that's an important distinction to make but and and i don't think darren ferris is like media trained so i'm
Starting point is 00:34:02 gonna give him a pass on that one i'm not too worried about that i think what i find interesting is this and and this is going to be the running thread and i know steve you're just chomping at the bit i'm i'm being a good boy they didn't need to talk about this no the they could have sat down done the interview and go we're done with talking about toronto you never need to say anything you never need to say anything at all done talking about toronto i just want to talk about how excited i am to be in vegas they could have told both interviewers that and they could have done that but it is what is abundantly clear is that both marner and darren ferris want to set their own record about what happened and why they're leaving because they feel the need and i this is
Starting point is 00:34:47 the part i can't figure out to justify leaving because why else would you talk about it right like it's your free agent right to leave save that for your autobiography the reason why you left but you feel the need to correct that record right now and for me listening to that i go why I mean, you're a free agent. You can leave. And a lot of people already knew these answers, and they were widely reported. You went to a good team for lots of money.
Starting point is 00:35:16 Who's shocked by this? Yeah, but they took it to a next level of, and you'll hear this a little bit with Mitch's answer. You hear it more with Darren Ferris, who I think is just naturally a little bit more talkative about the whole situation than Mitch is. And himself. And I think, I find it to be odd
Starting point is 00:35:35 that they needed to have this this chat and so what i would like to do now is move forward to um uh the the mitch marner interview with mark masters if that's okay jesse can we do that actually no let's go to the next clip 47 10 uh in this one my my timings are all off on this i must have i don't know what happened but i screwed up all the timings on my on my clips adam buddy you just let me know when i get to go for a little run in the field this is the this is the third one and then i'm gonna let you run in the field because i'm building up to sometimes here's what an interview does guys at the beginning of an interview you're gonna get some canned answers and a little bit of candor we're going from 15 minutes in to 47 minutes in
Starting point is 00:36:20 and this is where the the walls are down and you're going to start to hear the real answer come out a little bit and there's one word that he uses go ahead jesse starting in my mind i don't like uh i don't i don't like the cap i don't like you know that we're restricted in those areas um reducing the yeah this is really annoying i yeah he doesn't like that i for whatever reason the nhl site gave me these times when i when i went through those not that one no it's about um on the question is on the ice what do you think mitch is most excited about being vegas being in vegas uh mitch you know we're looking around the facility every day uh wondering is this gonna to be the day that uh that he rolls in and uh and get things going out on the ice what do you think
Starting point is 00:37:05 he's most excited about i mean he loves he's going to play with jack eichel um the team is a competitive team they're always competitive every year so um i think he's he's just excited to get going and get playing i mean he he loves the game he has a sensational appetite to play the game and he's a smart player listen he took all that criticism being a leading point getter even the playoffs and he still got attacked you know like it there was just no winning you know as far as off the ice uh and on darren unfortunately now there was a large group that did support him i shouldn't be poo-pooing on everything because there are a lot of people good people that are respectful and uh understand listen it's always okay to you know to have your critiques of players
Starting point is 00:37:52 play but when it gets personal that's where it's um and you attack family and so and the player personally i those are the things i think he'll be happy to have behind him now we'll leave it there for a second the key word here is attacked attacked is a big word like it is your words matter right attacked is a big word like we that that is a big thing for an agent to say so we've gone from uh yeah it's noise it's noise to it's an attack and that is where i think um you know i don't expect that everybody listening to this also heard this interview beforehand but i think it's an important reference point before we get to the mitch marner clip now do you want to talk about what you want to say now or do you want me to play the mitch marner clip about why he says
Starting point is 00:38:39 he left i'm making you wait you make us i want to hear from mitch and then we'll go because we'll Go to the TSN, and I do have... He has something to say. We should hear it. I have permission from TSN to use this, so you don't have to worry about that. Oh, don't worry. Mark Masters and Mitch sat down.
Starting point is 00:38:56 I think this is the interview that went more viral than the John Shannon, Darren Millard one. And basically at 1.45, I'm assuming my timing's right here, Mark Masters just says, why'd you leave? Which is a great question. By the way,
Starting point is 00:39:11 John Shannon and Darren Millard, like getting an agent spectacular great job yeah great job now now we know all this stuff it was a lot yeah i mean you know um obviously i was just saying you know game one and two went amazing against florida you know game three to five went really bad um three was actually a really good game went to i think overtime where they scored you know late in the game to win it but um overtime is late yeah we lose game seven as we do um in a non-enjoyable way of of all time probably um you know get home you're pretty disappointed you're pretty devastated at that um you know the thought also of it being my last maple leaf game at home
Starting point is 00:39:54 um and then i get a phone call probably about five or so minutes after from uh i think it was my wife's father called me and goes i just want to let you know we've got people sending us screenshots of a guy posting your address online saying that if people want to come pay us a visit and say you know their goodbyes in a quotation way here's the address and it's a little tough obviously I mean we kind of dealt with it for the last two years in a way I mean the markets very passionate they love the team I mean I know it I was born and raised there I've been a part of the Leafs nation for a long time but yeah when your family safety comes into
Starting point is 00:40:33 question, especially having a new son. I don't think it's acceptable. You know, having full-time security pretty much at your house for two weeks after the playoffs just to make sure no one's coming to the house. You know, also the safety-wise of trying to walk your dog and your child. So it was a little unfortunate, but yeah, it's, you know, we all deal with this stuff. You know, it's just um sometimes it happens went really bad is such an understatement to people who like that was just a devastating experience went really bad to of all time probably it's an awkward turn of phrase but he's always awkward in front of a mic so i'm gonna pass on that it just makes me chuckle yeah a lot of people are are calling what uh the incident that he's referring to uh uh hoax
Starting point is 00:41:23 i don't know i think that's insane um no that happened no no it happened yeah when he said it happened this happened i wholeheartedly believe him no i like i've i've seen the tweet that had to be taken down like it's not it's a thing that happened i thought it was very weird that people were like well i haven't seen it no well it was taken down like that doesn't mean it doesn't exist there was a reporter like i don't think that even needs to be a conversation like those people are just oh mitch is a liar like no this happened the leafs dealt with it that night it happened and then all of this did happen like i think we need to move past the did this happen yes no it happened it happened guys he's not lying i've seen it yeah i was there when it was going on
Starting point is 00:42:01 uh during this whole playoff it happened and that it happened is ridiculous and awful and no one should have to deal with that um this does strike me a little bit as i'm not going to say using the truth to lie uh which is a phrase that i like to use but it's using the truth to bend the truth um this happened a hundred percent it happened and it was bad and you know when when he refused that trade to carolina i even before that happened i was like his wife's god knows how many months pregnant i'm not accepting a trade like and and i brought it back to remember the whole trade fiasco with john scott uh ahead of the 2016 all-star game part of what made that so heinous was his wife was like ready to pop yeah as well and you know players get traded all the
Starting point is 00:42:55 time but this one was wonky and yep wasn't good anyway he he talked about like his young family safety here i'm gonna read you something and you let me know how this comes across you piece of shit, shut the fuck up about Marner. You know zero about the game, you little puke. You'll never get to speak to him again. So if I got that message from an angry fan, which when I first read it, I was like, oh, okay, that's run of the mill.
Starting point is 00:43:30 I get stuff like that all the time. You're a piece of shit. You're a fat fuck. You don't know how to skate, whatever. I get that all the time. Shut the fuck up. um, one day your kid's going to kill himself because, uh, of your videos. Yeah. You get stuff like that all the time, which is why I just, I don't post them anymore. Um, but when I got that
Starting point is 00:43:52 message, everything was run of the mill threatening, but run of the mill until that last sentence you'll never get to speak to mitch again i went who the who the hell is this that's marner's personal security guy personal security guy this was june 2nd 2021 so a couple days after the montreal loss the montreal loss so you know these guys have been sensitive since more than last year well i'll just speak to that we were blamed for something another podcast did because there was another podcast out there that apparently and i didn't hear this clip so i can't really verify yeah i don't know there's another podcast that apparently said something along the lines of uh you know people should dump garbage on his front lawn because he played like
Starting point is 00:44:52 it or something like that and we've never said that uh and we never would right like if i could say he played like garbage that's acceptable saying you should go to his house and dump garbage on it is probably somebody who's younger at the game in terms of like media and not realizing that those words as i as i mentioned the word attacked they matter you can't do that and so we got sort of looped lumped in with them you were still at sports net at the time too i was and so i escalated this with sportsnet because i'm like okay they're they're coming after my access which means so there's already the threat of loss of something they're this is probably going to affect my job because i have to i have to talk to players sometimes and he's saying you'll never
Starting point is 00:45:47 speak to Marner again you know one day Sportsnet's going to ask me to talk to Marner and he's going to refuse and I'm going to have to explain why yeah you do have to let them know you got to get ahead of it and also I find out this this guy is a security guard for an influential multi-millionaire uh do you think that I might have interpreted that as a potential threat to my safety it wasn't an implicit i'm going to hurt you but the implication is if you keep running your mouth something bad is going to happen to you and i'm worried about my job i'm worried about my wife i'm worried about my young child when this happened right and this fucking idiot this buffoon of a man is still going around he was going around yesterday he's still going around
Starting point is 00:46:42 and he's commenting on everything saying awful things to everybody and it can't just be that Mitch is gone now so he's letting loose he talks shit about uh in a comment oh yeah Nylander's going after all of Marner's sponsorships now this is how I know Toronto is a downright uh reasonable media market can you imagine if luka donchich's agent after he was traded from the mavericks to the lakers starts talking shit and going well kairi is now going after all of his sponsorship deals and fuck that guy can you imagine by the way neil andrew should do that you should do that go get it like what why not can you imagine the fuss no one talked about it no one even mentioned it a bunch of you are going is is this true is is steve just making this i
Starting point is 00:47:41 could post it all if you like because this buffoon is posting all of this online so what's the point the point i am trying to make is what the marner camp is saying is wildly hypocritical it's true that no one should have to deal with what he's dealing with and it would be awesome and i think a lot of people would appreciate it if they practice what they preached i escalated it with sportsnet because this camp has been going around for years complaining to bosses trying to get people fired threatening to take away access and making people feel unsafe that's relevant information to all that this you know this loving care bear persona all right when i hammered alan walsh years ago for the mark andre flurry mark andre flurry sword thing
Starting point is 00:48:50 I criticized it wasn't me hammering out I was hammering Marc-Andre Fleury because I was like this guy's agent works for him because that the sword post had been up for I think over 24 hours at that point and I'm like the fact that this isn't down yet that could be down with a text that could be down with a phone call and the fact that it isn't to me implies an endorsement of the message so even though marner isn't personally doing all this dirty work is this not endorsement of the message from him from the people around him from his agent is that not endorsement of the message i think i think there was a call made to sports net about something we said on this podcast too uh i remember that but no it wasn't what it was was uh we called a podcast i think
Starting point is 00:49:50 it was like oh we called it rich marner because he just signed an extension he just signed an extension it was rich but we got we got blame for it rhymes with mitch but they put up some sort of post about way to go paul which was a big thing six years and oh fuck did that go over like a like a yeah shit at a wedding we didn't have anything to do with that but the rich marner thing was like it was the name of the show it was it was just i mean he is rich and i'm pretty sure we we either changed it or were asked to change it or were heavily please please change this or yeah i don't remember what it was no we changed it we changed it yeah in an effort to uh to not obviously to not put sports in in a bad position but also it's like hey man like uh you don't have
Starting point is 00:50:35 to love us but like we are gonna have to run in the same circles here for a while yeah the the other thing i would like to say if unless you guys want to say something or if i could go for it keep going keep running the field yeah um what i saw a lot of with uh mitch's comments uh after this interview toronto fans are the worst i hope they never win again i hope why i would expect another fan of a team say Toronto yeah I hope Mitch no because of this because of what these fans did and like Leaf fans are the biggest and the loudest they are not blameless one thing Leaf fans did this summer that I thought was disgusting is uh Brendan Shanahan's daughter posted a TikTok that he was in and I think it was up a couple hours before getting deleted I assume because the
Starting point is 00:51:27 comments were awful that's fucked up that's stupid like okay it was time for him to go what are you doing yeah he's gone leave him alone and leave his daughter alone are you what the fuck is the matter you're a lunatic and you need help yes so presumably the fact that you hope the leafs never win again and you hope mitch wins immediately is because this is the only place where this happens okay well everyone put their hand up and if you hear your name put it down Stuart Skinner's wife reacts to their family received death threats from Edmonton Oilers fans. NHL, St. Louis police looking into threats made towards Avalanche's Nazem Kadri. Maple Leafs player received death threats after Patrick Laine hits.
Starting point is 00:52:11 That was Cedric Paré. Cutter Gojie says he has received death threats in aftermath of Flyers trade. NHL investigates Ovechkin death threat. Lightning's JT Brown gets death threats after protest. from death threats to corporate backlash russian nhl players in a very difficult spot panthers matheson michael matheson had death threats after hit on canucks elias patterson now there are more than one example of leaf fans so don't worry i will get to those jake says he received death threats from maple leafs fans too many to count toronto maple
Starting point is 00:52:48 leafs defenseman thomas caberle was beloved by the fan base and when cam jansen hit him Some fans didn't know how to handle it, and he received death threats. In the midst of controversy, Kevin Hayes addressed the situation regarding false claims linking him to Cutter Gauthier's decision not to sign with the Flyers. Kevin Hayes says he got death threats over media members making shit up. Elvis Mears-Leakins, the Blue Jackets' current starting goalie, while Younes Korpisalo recovers from injury, has struggled to start the season behind a weak team. Today, his wife revealed that their family has received death threats from Blue Jackets fans. NHL fan-favorite referee Wes McCauley and Toronto Maple Leafs fans have been butting heads since... Blah, blah, blah. Leaf fans sent death threats to Wes McCauley. I don't have to read the whole headline for all of you.
Starting point is 00:53:41 uh timo meyer uh received a death threat from st louis blues fans after his hand pass goal in 2019 former canucks draft pick report do i have to yeah have i made my point the way all those people i think are looked at by those individual fan bases is the reasonable way and anybody who's a fan of the flyers or the sharks or the leafs black would say that those people who do those things to brennan shanahan's daughter to mitch marner and issue those death threats they would say that person is not a part of our fan base that person is not a leaf fan that is a crazy person who needs help who needs to not be have their internet access taken away yeah and the part that bothers me about the way mitch marner and darren ferris went about things
Starting point is 00:54:26 is that they use that crazy fan who nobody in the fan base would say is a fan of the team they are something else they use those isolated incidents as a way to characterize the entire fan base yes they continue to do that in both as a justification for leaving which both i'm sorry and jesse i'm gonna interject for two seconds this decision was not made this spring i'll leave it at that go ahead jesse no no i think it's very true in that like they they took this isolated incident and they're now using it as a way to spin the narrative for this is how leaf fans are this is why he's gone when we all know that that's not the case and there are what 18 other skaters on the team that exist here and they're fine and they just keep going about their business and that's not a reason
Starting point is 00:55:17 to leave the team there was a there was a fan brawl between mls fans this past weekend i didn't know that i don't have the mls imagine well it's soccer getting in a fistfight and ending up in the hospital or jail because of an mls game holy shit i appreciate that i appreciate the fandom you know all right you know what maybe they're right maybe we need to do more of that maybe you know what no i think there's definitely something more going on here and i think there's one there's an answer in there where mitch marner at mark masters asked miss martin he's like okay so what's your message to the fans now that you're gone and mitch starts the answer by saying you know there's a lot of negativity in the fan base it's hard to get through that and i could play it for you there
Starting point is 00:56:03 but it's it's just his mindset wasn't built for this situation i think early on it was fine but somewhere along the line his tenure as a toronto maple leaf it became too much for him you know i i think we know the somewhere where do you think contract negotiations 2019 sure like i don't know the specific instance but it definitely took a turn somewhere absolutely where he became uncomfortable himself with attention and the fans having expectations of him and then him not being able to deliver those expectations and then the blowback from that and it's just a feedback loop where he just started hating the least fans yeah and that's the reality and he can't get away from the negativity i don't know whether it's him looking at it himself or the people around him
Starting point is 00:56:50 sending it to him constantly he can't get over that hump and he never could and that's why he had to leave and it's nothing to do with death threats and any of that stuff no and and you know what the the key here was where that last clip from the darren ferris interview uh where you know they ask him what he's most excited about with vegas and darren ferris says uh i think he's gonna explode he's gonna play with jack eichel he's not gonna have to worry about any of that noise and then and then he goes to he was the leading scorer in the playoffs and got attacked
Starting point is 00:57:22 and that is first off that's a total I thought he didn't read whatever happened to all that shit I don't listen to that I don't watch that that's not what we're saying here though this is Darren Ferris talking no but they've said it in the past of course then they do read
Starting point is 00:57:35 and Darren Ferris says that in the interview he's like you got friends and family saying hey they're saying this about you did you know that and Elliot Friedman said this years ago and I think it was in reference to like now now's i'm cadre in his rookie year do not allow your friends and family to send that stuff tell them to stop he i don't know if it was naz but it was he came on our show i want to say 2015 or 16 yeah and you're like old apartment and and he's like dude shut the tell your family shut the fuck up let me don't send me this shit yeah and so oh you know how many times i've been
Starting point is 00:58:12 sent stuff by friends meaning well i'm like why the fuck did you say you guys want me to play you this last answer it's just it's such a good insight into way the way his mind works i'll play it for you hit it guys fans that are disappointed that you left yeah um i'll even play this question um you know we all deal with this stuff um you know it's just um sometimes it happens a lot of negativity that you had to deal with but a lot of positivity too a lot of love for you and what you did in Toronto. What would be your message to Leafs Nation fans that are disappointed that you left?
Starting point is 00:58:44 Yeah, like I said, bittersweet. I mean, for all the negative comments out there, you know there's so many love comments. The problem is that the love comments don't come out as much as the hatred ones, and that's just the way life goes, and that's the way the social media has turned into. He has a point. You could read 10 positive comments about yourself,
Starting point is 00:59:02 but you'll remember the negative. But I think the important thing in there is, one it's a good tee up by masters to just stop all say something nice about the fans what's your message to the fan base and he starts by kind of getting there and then immediately his brain goes i can't get past the negative comments and no matter what it is those comments are always going to be louder and i think under he sees the world unfortunately he underhand threw him a beach ball yeah and he whiffed that that's the last question that's asked there and that should have been i loved my time in toronto i'm gonna miss you that's what he mark masters was teeing him up for
Starting point is 00:59:41 and he couldn't get out of his own way to say you know the negative comments are so much louder that's how the world works now the one not the world it's not how the world works unless you frame it like that unless that's how you see it and that is how you are allowed to see the world in a different way and sometimes jesse that's not a way to live you you see ghosts yeah and and you know one of the things that we do on this show is we check each other uh we get a lot of comments we get a lot of dms and sports is like religion we know this right you're talking when you it's so funny like if i say something bad about a specific team meaning like i don't really believe in this team's talent i remember years ago i was like i just don't understand what columbus are
Starting point is 01:00:21 doing and they went they got off on like a hot streak to start the year and i heard from this one columbus fan who was like you're the stupidest motherfucker i've ever heard of you're so fucking dumb listen to every show top to tail and and what happened at the end of the season columbus missed the playoffs and i didn't go back and go haha motherfucker but it's his he loves the blue jackets so of course he's gonna get irrational about the blue that is how my youtube channel began somebody dm me some of this it was so nasty about uh when i was doing my connor hellebuck bit because the beat kept going on. Somebody from Winnipeg, it was just dirty stuff in my DMs.
Starting point is 01:01:00 I was like, it's not that serious. It's not serious. He won the best night in the heart. You won. They were attacking me personally. Yeah, but he looked a little rough in the playoffs, didn't he? The best way that bit could have gone at the beginning of it was you are so right, or he's not just good.
Starting point is 01:01:22 It wouldn't have been funny if he was just good. the best goalie in the world there's not a way it could have gone better for him in the regular season oh it was the best you got to admit great content yeah great for the but we check each other because if i get a shitty comment i'll text through to the boys here in our little sdpn chat like the two of us or the three of excuse me and uh the two of you is what i mean and then the two of you will be like the first thing you'll say that was is first off it was me that's my burner you caught me get another slant it was just uh it was justin fisher social media guy uh secondly you'll say why are you reading the fucking comments adam like how many times how many times
Starting point is 01:02:04 do we have to tell you not to read the comments and and for the most part i'm pretty good and then every time i i see something that like bugs me a little bit i'll send it through and they'll be like guys adam i thought you said you didn't read the comments i'm like i know i read this one my feelings and it's not so much like don't blanket don't read the comments it's about like because i think like interacting with youtube comments i think is an important thing at the end of the day when you run a network like this it's just about like the the people who are just being spitting vitriol at you yeah like that doesn't don't let them build you up that doesn't deserve your attention if you in the comments want to drop something and it's insightful
Starting point is 01:02:41 or you just want to say hey like i'll reply to you hey and that sort of stuff like it's fun to talk and interact with your fans that's good stuff it's just the people who are at that other end of the spectrum and being like death threats and that racist things and that and sexist stuff like those people don't need you don't need to be anywhere near that kind of stuff and the amount of sexist comments i get from women is just unbelievable they said people objectify you need to stop objectifying your juicy ass yeah that and they tell me you don't know anything about sports you're just a man and i and i'm like wow what what's your problem man i'm just a guy trying to make his way in the world but in all seriousness i think sorry i think what it is here is that like
Starting point is 01:03:23 sometimes too like you got to take a look at at at you got to take a rational realistic look at how you react to a market and i want to play this one last clip okay that i've been holding back on because I have a point to make about this clip. And it has to do with the highlight. And Jesse, I don't know if my timing's right on this one, so if we have to fast forward, we have to fast forward. But 2016 is what I'm looking for in my notes. We'll see if it actually translates.
Starting point is 01:03:52 It's probably 30 seconds ahead of that. 2016. That's when Mitch was on the fourth one? That's right. He started hating the Leafs forever. He's going to do real... He's already done real well. He's one of the smartest guys I've ever worked with.
Starting point is 01:04:08 That's Kent Hughes he's talking about, by the way. What would your relationship and Mitch's relationship be with Brad, Trey Living, and the Toronto Maple Leafs now? Yeah, it's still cordial. I've known Brad quite a while. He's a good man. He's got a tough job in front of him, and Toronto's not an easy organization to work in
Starting point is 01:04:28 with all the noise on the outside. He seems to weather it. Every answer. Yeah, everything's fine between us. we were talking about a free agent that I have currently that's still out there just recently. And, you know, we had a discussion, and we continue to, I mean, it's business as usual.
Starting point is 01:04:53 How do you characterize Mitch's current state now compared to maybe a year ago at this time or six months ago at this time as he prepares for his first season in vegas i i think one he's relieved he's excited i i see a a reborn mitch uh i think he's going to explode there uh without you know this outside pressure i i think uh um i think he's going to do fine he he's back to the old mitch and that's that's the great thing and the family's in a better mental state. I think totally both him and the family. I think he's going to really succeed where he's going.
Starting point is 01:05:38 So here's what I want to jump in and say there. The agent just told you the player can't handle the spotlight. Weak. The agent just told you that. If I was Mitch, I'd call Darren and go, what the hell, man? Can we play that one little bit one more time? I need to reinforce this point.
Starting point is 01:05:57 His agent just told you what we already knew. He scored an overtime winner and got the friggin' game, the tournament-winning assist of the Four Nation face-off. Holy shit! How do you characterize Mitch's current state now compared to maybe a year ago at this time or six months ago at this time as he prepares for his first season in Vegas?
Starting point is 01:06:23 I think, one, he's relieved. He's excited. I see a reborn Mitch. I think he's going to explode there without this outside pressure. Pause. That's it right there. Fans in Vegas don't give a fuck. Yeah, what? Right?
Starting point is 01:06:43 Darren, how am I supposed to interpret that? I mean, Vegas has an NFL team, so you can understand that there might be a diffusion of interest. Toronto has a baseball team. A basketball team is goddamn Toronto. How am I supposed to interpret that? Or any other time an agent says that other than, well, people in Nevada just don't give a fuck about hockey. But that's not true. I know it's not frigging true.
Starting point is 01:07:09 And, you know, I said this before the summer and I caught shit from people associated for saying it. But it's true. And I fought back on this. Why? Because I said, listen, you think that the outside pressure was tough in Toronto. I'm going to tell you that in Toronto, the inside pressure internal is there, but they treat those players pretty damn well and let them over the years, especially in the Dubas years, get away with some shit.
Starting point is 01:07:35 Dubas bent over backwards for those guys on certain points, and they kicked him in the teeth a few times. Dude, if you go to any Leaf fan of a certain age and go, Tim Brent, they respond, Tim Brent! yeah my my that that hold on that played on teams that stunk he scored like seven goals and they fucking love him my point oh my god is that if you thought the external pressure in toronto was a lot the internal pressure in vegas is not like it is in toronto they have a higher standard traditionally if you look at the last 10 years that the team that has been more successful
Starting point is 01:08:07 far and away has been vegas the the attrition in vegas is unbelievable how many goalies how many coaches how many guys i want to be here forever guys have they gone that's great how about you fuck off we're bringing the next star in that's what vegas operates their number one export is players july was guys if he doesn't perform in the playoffs for a couple of years he will be gone to couple and i got no no you get a couple years you get a couple jack eichel is going to sign an extension here he wasn't very good in the playoffs didn't get a lot of results for what this past year yeah almost no results he's got a ring though he does have a ring yeah yeah he was great the year he's got people saying jack eichel's not a playoff performer i'm like okay uh but vegas is
Starting point is 01:08:55 very quick to move off of stars yes toronto is not no matter what you did they're like you know what I like you. I like the cut of your jib. We're going to try this again. And I think that's where people, I think that that is what his camp and himself need to look out for. Oh, we can handle the internal pressure.
Starting point is 01:09:13 I've seen a lot of instances where it actually threw you off. And the minorest of slights and some mega slights, the Babcock shit, they hung on to forever. The schedule B bonuses, they hung on to forever.
Starting point is 01:09:26 And if you didn't want, and after the Babcock thing, I understand wanting to stay in Toronto. He was beloved here, like all that stuff. I'm not faulting him for that. I understand the Babcock list thing being terrible. The schedule B bonuses after you got your 11 million, dude, time to let that go.
Starting point is 01:09:43 But they never did. And so where I started this and where I'd like to finish this is they seem to need to have the desire to tell everyone, no, we're right. No, we are right. This was the right call. we've been treated unfairly i've never seen a player who's made close to 75 million dollars
Starting point is 01:10:05 that we know of in this in his career right because obviously a bunch of endorsement dollars those are not public he's made a lot more he made a lot more than that right who's good now walking into another 100 million dollars i've never seen one more victimized and i get that his family was carjacked that wasn't because he was mitch marner that was because he drove a The robbers in that situation had no idea he was Mitch Martin. And that's horrible. It was scary, and his family was going to be affected forever. The death threats are horrible, but if you want to,
Starting point is 01:10:33 you can go listen to the 100% Hockey interview. And Darren Farris is like, there's just so much misinformation out there about him, and fans don't know anything. You got a mic in front of you. Help us out. But this is the point. You guys didn't have to say anything at all,
Starting point is 01:10:46 but you chose to on two occasions. Say it to an NHL-licensed podcast from NHL.com. And TSN, because you feel the need somewhere inside of you to justify this. And I think I know what it is. I think that it's, it's a, it's this, this is going to sound crazy. I think there's a little bit of, I can't believe that on the way out the door in my last game, I got booed every time touching the puck. Why not?
Starting point is 01:11:21 because there is no responsibility taken. So Darren Farris said, hey, you know, he leads the playoffs in scoring, but he still gets attacked. Well, yeah, but let's break down the games where he scored and where he didn't. And I think that's, so Michael Jordan, you don't have to ask which games he didn't show up for.
Starting point is 01:11:42 LeBron James, you don't have to ask which games he didn't show up for. The ones they lost. Sidney Crosby, how many Penguins fans are out there going, You know what? Sure would be good if Sid showed up when it mattered. How many Oilers fans ask you or Avalanche fans ask you, you know what, I just need Nate to show up when it's big.
Starting point is 01:11:59 You know, Connor and Leon, they really could have a big game in game seven one of these days. And so, yes, the online abuse is wrong. We live in a world with online abuse. That's like saying car theft is wrong. We live in a world of car theft. at a certain point you got to let this go you've moved on you don't want to be here that's cool
Starting point is 01:12:23 we're fine with it leaf fans we're fine with it i wanted to start the show today with connor mcdavid actually but here we are talking about it not because we wanted to but because you wanted to and what's happening which is so strange and what's happening what's happening now you wanted to not just once if it had just been the tsn interview or if it just been the 100 hockey hockey interview i don't think but the two of them together within hours of each other steve simmons fucking nailed this and a lot of people listen i have a hard time giving that man his flowers sometimes yeah but god he friggin nailed it what did he say he said um within days the story was intentionally planted marner on tsn and ferris on a hockey podcast and it was or is
Starting point is 01:13:09 believed by some who must believe in fairy tales that Marner's life and that of his family were in danger because of his lack of playoff performance. The Leafs are well aware of the crazies out there on social media and monitor them regularly. They know that loud, anonymous voices are not just that or sorry, are just that loud, angry and mostly anonymous. However, rarely has a professional athlete of consequence in this city or any other city been in real distress. But as someone who has been threatened screamed at called horrible names over the years uh what's spoken online has stayed online the leafs doing their diligence looked into the situation with marner who was still their property at the time their security people did the same as part of their regular
Starting point is 01:13:48 employment they found nothing to be concerned with they wonder now about the veracity of what is being told now jesse you can say that did happen that tweet did happen the one they're talking about yes but here's where i think steve nails it that marner and ferris are essentially telling the same story at the same time is indicative of the planning and planting
Starting point is 01:14:07 a reason for wanting out of Toronto more than anything else and from their side hoping fans will buy the version of Mitch Marner the 11 million dollar
Starting point is 01:14:16 Steve's wrong here it's actually 12 100 point victim well he was 11 million when he scored 100 points yeah
Starting point is 01:14:22 and this is I do want to say I don't think Mitch Marner's a bad person like that's the thing everybody's like but he's such a great guy
Starting point is 01:14:31 I don't doubt that for a second there are plenty of people out there who are great people who are maybe not handling the situation well and i think that's what happened here his agent said it he kind of referenced it you couldn't take the heat here you're going to vegas and by the way all you're going to find there is more heat so i'm curious now to see how he does i don't give a shit if he goes on a 20 game points he's gonna score over a well over 100 points well if him or jack eichel decide to shoot neither of them can or neither of them will i'm curious about that both both of them can i'm curious about that um but i think he'll do he'll be successful too but i don't think he'll like
Starting point is 01:15:14 unlock a new mitch marner because the social media is different the way his agent pretends that he will the only reason marner will be mitch marner a good a very very good hockey player yeah who loves hockey listen oh my god i know we're gonna do this a hundred times the only logical reason i can think to do this is uh to up the the sponsorship dollars ahead of the olympics um because why else are you doing this it's over well the ferris thing has nothing to do with the olympics and tsn doesn't carry the olympics no no but it's uh like for him the only reason for them to do this to answer these questions when they did how they did see i don't think that they're going to get any of those sponsorship dollars because mitch marner is not a sellable
Starting point is 01:16:05 athlete in toronto that's what i'm saying he's not a sellable athlete in any other canadian city because he was a leaf that has nothing to do with mitch that's just he was a leaf it's not going to be john tavares in an islanders jersey doing bread commercials or crosby in a water or coconut water john tavares was on coconut water billboards in toronto while he was an islander but that's the point right like i don't think those sponsorship dollars are there anymore and that's why you do an interview like this to try to get some of them back well that's gone i agree and so anyway i want to wrap the segment jesse you have anything else you want to add to this i just feel like we've kind of we've done it i would like to just move on now two and five canadians will hear the words
Starting point is 01:16:45 you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in Toronto for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation Walk. I get it. I'm Siaya, and I live in Ice Cove. I've made some questionable decisions that didn't end up the way I planned.
Starting point is 01:17:26 And today I'm still figuring it out. Somehow things usually get worse before they get better. Apparently that's how I roll. So bundle up and come along for the bumpy ride. Don't miss the new season of North of North starting September 8th on CBC Gem. Right here in the GTA, there's a new registered charity called Progressive Life Center in Ajax. You've heard us talk about these guys before. um they i think you want you to think of it as like a facility but instead of developing athletic
Starting point is 01:17:54 skills um it helps people with autism adults specifically with autism develop life skills work skills and building confidence and this is a you know for anybody that's got a member of their family that's autistic um and it's a wide spectrum of you know when we when you dive into autism that's sort of there's many many many different facets to it uh one of the things uh that it can be is very isolating and uh and so this is a social thing it's a uh a skills building thing which then leads to confidence and employment and i think that's sort of the key here right is that everybody has something to offer and they do too and so the plc believes in the power of coaching practice and building skills progressively they have fitness programs personal training physical
Starting point is 01:18:41 wellness uh and as we said too on the job training they teach resume resume writing um interview skills all that stuff and they even have a plc cleaning crew that provides real job training in commercial cleaning that leads to paid employment elsewhere so they have a golf tournament it is happening tuesday september 16th hosted at the wine dance golf club in uxbridge 18 hole shotgun format uh uh please make sure that you uh join up it's 225 to register as an individual 900 as a foursome the contact is info at progressive life center.ca or go to progressive life center.ca to check it out what's your mcdavid segment well it's the fact that he's not signed and this story like it's not when lebron james was signing rolling one-year contracts because
Starting point is 01:19:30 he wanted to make sure he could max out his salary that was not a big story right because I think that was in Cleveland, where he would just go, okay, I'm going to sign for one year, but next year when the max is even higher, and this is like 16, 17, 18, when the TV revenues came in and the cap exploded, I want to make sure that I'm a part of that, right? And, you know, Chris Johnston was talking about this on TSN radio last week. I think Ryan Rashog tweeted out his thoughts on it, where he thinks it's going to be like a four-year deal, potentially, or whatever. i don't know where this goes but the fact that it's now being reported that there's been very little dialogue between the two camps tells me the oilers spent the summer waiting for a phone call and didn't get one i listen the the four-year thing makes a lot of sense i it doesn't make sense to me we come back come back to that well it makes a lot of like i believe it and i think that's the
Starting point is 01:20:26 way it's going to go is is what i mean and the reason for that connor and austin now have the same agent judd moldover uh i think these guys like listen i'm not trying to say connor's going to end up in toronto i very like very unlikely i think um because whatever the best thing you can think of is that is very unlikely to happen to the toronto maple leafs right so let's start there but they have the same agent and connor and austin work out together they do mcdonald's commercials together they do mcdonald's commercials together i think those guys are good buddies those are good commercials they were yeah really i did not hate those commercials they played together um at the at the friggin world cup of hockey in 2016 yes um i remember uh when austin
Starting point is 01:21:18 scored four goals in his first game, McDavid was like, well, you know, normal people can't expect to do that or something like that. Like he was, I think those guys really, really like each other. And I think they really like how one another think. And if you're Connor and you look at the amount of money Austin has made and the lack of money that he has left on the table because of the contracts that he'd sign uh like is if your goal is to maximize your dollars like isn't austin's model the way to go he signed the five-year deal now he's on a four-year deal which means he's got at least one more big deal left in his nhl career i think if you're mcdavid you sign two like two more two more two years if you're going to sign with yeah i agree if you're
Starting point is 01:22:08 going to sign during the season now we'll talk about oh two years all year long yeah are you saying two years or two more contracts two-year extension oh and and the reason i say that is we know what the salary cap is going to be for the next two two years after this one yeah and we also know that after that all bets are off and the nhl revenue is exploding as it is across all pro sports and barring another covet situation please god no um we're looking at a gigantic jump i'm trying to figure out why at 28 years old Connor McDavid would lock himself up till he's 32. Why not lock yourself
Starting point is 01:22:43 up till you're 30 and get another big fat deal? You could do that several times. And I know hockey is like a physical game or whatever. You're telling me that Connor McDavid with some slight injury history, if he were to have some, do you think any team's going to pay him any less than the max that he wants? He fixed his PCL
Starting point is 01:23:00 like the Terminator. He didn't even get surgery. He just fucking rehabbed it. Oh no, I snapped this ligament. And he's right back to being the best player in the world, if not better than he already was. Yeah, I honestly think you're on to something with Auston Matthews and leading that, Auston Matthews giving insight
Starting point is 01:23:18 in what Connor McDavid could do. Speaking of the pandemic, this was from a Jonas Eagle article back in like February. McDavid and Matthews spent about three weeks together in Arizona playing golf and training when the season was getting back up into swing. Those guys really like each other. that i think it would have been the 21 season or the 2020 season i forget which one but like mcdavid went down to arizona and they were living together for almost a month and then last
Starting point is 01:23:46 summer they were like in germany together for a couple weeks they spent a lot of casual time together and with austin saying i'm gonna take a shorter shorter deal it's better for my career it's maximizing my money there's no reason for me to believe that mcdavid's gonna all of a sudden signed an eight-year deal that doesn't make sense there's no hint towards that it just makes perfect sense a shorter term and i think it could be really short like adam saying on a two-year i don't know why you do four i just don't and and i and it's not that he's not good friends with leon dry sidle too they were at weddings this summer together like i i think people don't have multiple friends i think that it's going to be yeah it's crazy you'll be blown away but they
Starting point is 01:24:25 can't have multiple friends within the sport and maybe never play together like ty domey and Mario Lemieux are best friends. They never played on this. Ty Domi's friends with everybody. Still on. Yo, Ty Domi's friends with Dua Lipa's dad. My friends with everybody.
Starting point is 01:24:37 Yeah, dude. Because they're Albanian, all of them. So it's a small community. Isn't that crazy? I was like, why is he posting a picture of Dua Lipa's dad?
Starting point is 01:24:46 I'm like, anyway. Connor McDavid. Yeah, so Connor McDavid, here's what I think is going to happen. Here's what I think is going to happen. As Steve said,
Starting point is 01:24:53 if you're a Leaf fan or you're a fan of any other team, the idea that Connor McDavid's leaving is a very fanciful one at best. We assume that he's going to resign, but if he makes it to next July 1st unsigned, or let's say post Stanley Cup unsigned, then it gets very, very interesting because what I think if you're an intelligent NHL general manager, you would do, this is what I would do, is you would assume that Connor McDavid, like John Tavares years ago, will have five or six teams, including the one he's on, that he's willing to talk to. and what you would do then is go okay you're sitting down with your agent judd and you're
Starting point is 01:25:29 going judd i want to know about their practice facilities i want to know about the city i want to know about the climate i want to know about the tax situation which darren ferris admits on the show by the way that it's in it's a factor i think he calls him juddy boy juddy boy yeah the judster uh juddy boy juddy boy so sit it so you're talking about all these things and by the way number one on the list is who's got the best chance to win the cup and all you really need to do as a team this year if you think connor mcdavid might come over is go proving to him all season long we are one connor mcdavid away so i look at the leafs okay we are one best player in the world away but he's he's the oilers no it's your job to prove to me you are one ryan
Starting point is 01:26:17 Nugent Hopkins away from the cup and then I show up yeah okay fair enough fair enough uh but my my point in that is like the Leafs taking a few gambles this year Matthias Michelli and and Dakota Joshua and some guys that had good years and then had bad years last year and you're trying them out if the Leafs can get through to say the second round kind of like the Raptors in the in the post Kawhi season man we were just one Kawhi Leonard away right that's what you need to do if you're one of those teams you got to set yourself up like hey we're really intelligently run there's a draft there's draft picks here to go and add it uh at the trade deadline uh really good facilities great fandom blah blah blah we need you for this run we're gonna be good for
Starting point is 01:27:00 the next three or four years here we need you for this run because we think we're gonna do this and he's gonna look at things like the oilers things the oilers don't have like good goaltending i think that's going to matter big i think he's going to look at do the stars that you have perform in the playoffs and i'm not talking about the first game of the first round i'm talking about games five game six game seven because he's already playing with two of the best late round performers in the league and leon dry saddle and zach hyman right like you need to show him that and that's really fucking hard to do not having zach hyman was so huge this year you know what i know i know people are like well the oilers took a step back i'm like yeah they took a zach
Starting point is 01:27:43 hyman back i think yeah they're like a final i know but they they finished in game six rather than game seven step back by a game in the cup final i know i don't think they were as close this year as they were last definitely not but like they had a pretty darn good year hyman had like a hundred hits in like 12 games yeah or something you need him yeah but that that's my point is i think if if if connor is considering leaving which you have to think he has just like mitch did at this time last year everyone everyone who's out of contract is considering leaving you have to look at it if you are considering leaving you gotta show that he's stepping into a situation that is one percent two percent three percent better than what the oilers have i think if you're
Starting point is 01:28:27 a team with really good goaltending and strong defense i think that's a real that's a bigger winner because you know connor is going to be able to take care of the offense he's going to need guys who can get him the puck consistent goal and i don't think their goaltending is good you can't don't don't gaslight me oh the the oilers no no no so so this is what i'm trying to say they can get good goaltending their goalies are capable of giving them good goaltending they're not dependable what if as a host here i was good 40 of the time right right like i know it can't be 100 but we got to get up on the 80s there this is why i wasn't in on jordan bennington for team canada of course man we we learned wrong you can well i mean he did he does no they won he
Starting point is 01:29:13 was great they won and he was great and he can give you those games yeah he can give you those games where he's fucking unbeatable but man a lot of the time you're like whoa he went on a run though in the play like ran them all the way to the playoffs after that uh-huh he was great uh-huh uh-huh yeah it's you need to know what you're getting in that yeah you need to know what you're getting in that they need to be better more often and and yet they seem not to care the like you have to think connor sat down with jeff jackson and stan bowman and said guys can we can we figure out goaltending uh is it journeyman cal pickard is it future journeyman stewart skinner oh my goodness whoa whoa whoa whoa am i wrong did he have a great year last year that i
Starting point is 01:29:58 missed he's still it stuart skinner's deceptively young yes he is i keep thinking he's like 30 he's not in all 26 yeah he's been back-to-back cup final yeah well 26 but like for a goalie that's like you're just getting started and he's a baby and he's been pulled along the way in both times yeah calvin picker had to calvin picker had to bail him out two years in a row and then he got his game back yeah but that's i don't feel like that's stuart skinner's problem stuart skinner should be the one whose problem is it stuart skinner management stuart skinner should be the 1b in that situation they should have yeah if you let me finish my sorry sorry he should have been the 1b we went over this in july so many times if they had gone out and gotten the 1a or the 1b
Starting point is 01:30:42 where stuart skinner is the 1a let's say and that's the tandem it would make so much more sense stuart skinner makes 2.6 million dollars he's not being paid like a starter who's going to give you 60 games and who's going to run you through the playoffs then but they refuse to go get that guy who's supposed to be next to him because it's not picker picker should be the third guy if if you had uh stuart skinner in like joseph wool's role exactly that's exactly what he'd be great i think they're the same age they're like wool can give you some insane games he can give you some pretty average games right he can give you some pretty average games but generally speaking if that's your second option you're doing okay you're doing and that's not stewart
Starting point is 01:31:26 skitter's fault no it's you're the number one option and i'm sorry like pickard we we talked about this during the playoffs it's a great story because he shouldn't be in the league yeah oh yeah it and there were times i watched him last year yeah he can give you saves he tries his balls off but like the form it's a lot of hucking your body across the ice and it's just not it's if there's a way good goalies do it and it ain't what i watch with him if there is a uh a 1a goalie as jesse mentions in the oilers net midway through the season or at the end of the season mcdavid sting yeah i don't know i believe that like even i if you have a i'm gonna give a toronto example here and anthony stoller's level guy yeah and he plays like anthony stoller's
Starting point is 01:32:23 did when he was healthy last year that there you go that mcdavid staying goalies i think if it was that easy it probably would have been done yeah like i don't know i mean i think the vote was last year would have been perfect for them i'm trying to think of goalies that other teams have fumbled, and they never fumbled them into the hands of the Edmonton Oilers. Producer Hayden, Philip Gustafson,
Starting point is 01:32:50 Sens fumbled him. Sens fumbled him bad, and I remember watching him in Ottawa going, this guy's pretty good. Sabres and Omar a little bit. He just didn't want to re-sign there. He was playing well there. Pretty much everyone
Starting point is 01:33:06 in Leonard, everyone and ben bishop like i'm trying to think of more recent examples lankan in is a good one example of the different players i loved how the edmonton owners went out and took advantage of the jake wallman situation yes where eiserman fumbled him to san jose and then san jose is like okay we're gonna move off of this good player because we just want the assets and they collected a really good player and man he was fairly cheap yeah great and they have they've yet to do that with goaltending at home with salary retention right that's it yeah that's insane yeah um but like yeah did their goalies get fumbled all the time and never do you never that's crazy this hopefully
Starting point is 01:33:46 for them this is the year you know like somewhere along the line maybe it's in training camp somebody gets waived and they have i was about to say they're gonna claim someone off waivers and win the cup in 16 games i don't know right they are that close they are that close to me goaltending is the thing for them there were a few games where they used a few how many games in the if you don't believe me how many games in the playoffs that the oilers let in five or more goals it's a lot it's a lot more than it should be and five do you know the answer easily that oh i thought you knew no i don't know i wasn't giving you trivia i'm just saying like even the la series alone it might have been five games right like it was it's too many it's too many
Starting point is 01:34:23 that can happen a couple of times in the playoffs it can't be several times every round so long story short yeah all the Oilers really need to do is shore up that position I think McDavid stays and he stays for a while and why wouldn't he but there is a slight crack in that door and every single day it's September 2nd right now every single day that he remains unsigned that crack gets wider and wider and wider take it from a city that just lost a star player in Mitch Marner oh here he just signed oh yeah right no sorry who Hildeby again yeah there's there's the answer in net for the Oilers. He's getting traded.
Starting point is 01:35:01 The guy's played six games and was good in like two of them. Three years contract. Three cups. Jesse, we're going to talk a little bit about our friends Drew and
Starting point is 01:35:08 Stu who are also back if you're into fantasy football. Drew and Stu pick them, but they're also doing a Drew and Stu live. So I'm going to let
Starting point is 01:35:15 Jesse explain the Drew and Stu pick them, but I will mention that Drew and Stu are giving a, you know how we do our watch alongs? Yeah. They're doing a watch
Starting point is 01:35:21 along this Sunday night at 8 o'clock. Yeah. So this is for week one of the NFL. Sunday night football Bills Ravens, which it's the game of the week it's awesome yeah yeah so we're gonna try that out if you like football
Starting point is 01:35:32 these two are hilarious and uh they're gonna be live the entire time it's kind of wild bit of a risk with cam i'm not gonna be as a must watch that's for sure oh oh if you're a manager it's a must not watch and find out later enjoy their first stream it might also be their last might be the last one yeah uh what's the drew and stew pick up so our friends at spark and And Drew and Stu and us at SDPN, we all teamed up to create this thing called Drew and Stu Pick'Em, where you can play along with Drew and Stu and the rest of the SDPN community and pick every game that week in the NFL against the spread. So you'll see there, there's every game you go through and you select who you think is going to win.
Starting point is 01:36:15 And there's a leaderboard at the top, so you follow along with everybody. You'll be able to follow along with all the SDPN people and their picks. and default you can see who drew and stew picked if you want to go with the experts quote if we call them experts and each week um you'll see the winner and the leaderboard and if you stay tuned there may or not may not be prizes you can win on a weekly or season-long basis so hit the link in the description drew and stew pick them it's live right now get your picks in before week one which starts on thursday and yeah play along with us all season long steve and adam i want to get you guys on here making your picks i'm gonna jump i'll jump on all right i listen it ain't gonna be
Starting point is 01:36:59 pretty but we'll get some we'll get some surprises and i think it'll be really fun for us to check in on the leaderboard and see how you do against the people out there and each other here i ran into a steelers fan on my elevator this morning on the way down to my car and she was why how did they get into the elevator in your house in my house in my penthouse condo that's the entire building they're a helicopter mechanic yeah oh okay yeah they were in there like fixing uh yeah no uh but they were saying they're like listen like like i know aaron rogers kind of a weird guy but go aaron rogers and and i'm like you know what true uh i'm gonna have to be that guy today but I'm
Starting point is 01:37:40 as a Steelers fan I'm like this better be it or it better be it as in it better be it on the field because if it's not
Starting point is 01:37:48 it on the field it better be it for management and I'm and I'm not convinced that either are true but it better be and I want them to
Starting point is 01:37:56 like I want them to go at like 11 and 7 Adam that's your captain what's that that's your captain it's my captain it's my quarterback support your captain
Starting point is 01:38:04 Jesse what do you think the Steelers will do this year uh i think they're gonna be hella mediocre like mike tallman's got that street going of always finishing above 500 i think it's really close this year and they're like just under and they miss the playoffs oh yeah they can't lose in the in the playoffs like they always do i i think it's i think it's a step back year for the steelers on where they've been even with dk madcap and
Starting point is 01:38:28 johnny smith and all those guys that they brought in nah i don't believe in that team wow what did you think of that jaylen warren uh running back who's basically never played he got a three-year contract yeah they they moved off the nazi harris and he's gonna get the starter role i think everybody's been kind of waiting for him to do it but i just i see him as like a complimentary piece and i don't know how he's gonna be with the full reigns i don't know i think it's like an eight win season uh seven win season for them i don't think like roger he's so old like there's i'm curious about was he ever good last year like like no last but last year is the so there's arguments to be made that last year was the year removed from a 39 year old at the time
Starting point is 01:39:10 tearing his achilles right he wasn't going to be good at any point last year he tore his achilles the year before it takes like 18 months to kind of get back to who you are so then this season is kind of the real comeback season of him being fully healthy and i'm not really buying that argument because it's a 40 year old who's trying to recover from an achilles yeah and he's not going to recover like a 28 year old a 25 year old or even somebody who's 35 because he's so far into his age curve when it falls off it falls off hard father time is undefeated i think it would be bad for my money to put it towards the pittsburgh state how long before mason rudolph is there starting qb no no rogers last the season oh you think he doesn't unless injury one unless it's
Starting point is 01:39:55 his own decision to retire okay i think there's season there's a if you want to go down that line there's a situation where aaron rogers by week 10 week 7 is like i don't have it anymore i'm gonna go to the pyramids and do ayahuasca like i'd rather be doing ayahuasca by the pyramids and failing to become the host of jeopardy than be playing football right now aaron rogers wanted he really really tried to become the host of jeopardy yeah you guys didn't know no that's hilarious really he failed like they went with ken jennings but that would have been hilarious every answer card he'd look at and go no i can't be right there was a brief moment where he was really gunning for that gig and he did not get it wow he should start a he should start like a game
Starting point is 01:40:43 show with him would be kind of funny because like he only finds himself funny yeah so the only jokes he would laugh at are his his own and they'd be kind of snide like he doesn't laugh at other people's jokes he goes only when he's taking a shot at like jimmy kimmel does he get a smile on his face i'm i'm i'm so curious to see how this goes yeah yeah the bobbly head thing yeah 100 anyway so we'll need to check in i guess at the end of tomorrow's show with your picks uh on this on spark june's to pick them the link is in the description everybody play along with us now there's a lot of stuff that we we will get to tomorrow um because we're doing a show tomorrow we're doing a show friday as well um but uh i did kind of uh want to mention that um
Starting point is 01:41:25 yeah we did the druids to pick them olympic orientation camps have already happened the only thing i want to ask you guys before we go to the press conference here is what did you think of nazem cadre after a 35 goal season on a flames team that could not score not getting an invite to orientation camp it's it's too deep yeah there's too many guys ahead of him a chance like even if he has another year like that oh no it was also a career high like i think that omission well surprising when you put it that way the one that i was just flabbergasted by was lane hudson oh in the states oh yeah yeah flabbergasted by that like you could just have a look at him not even an not even an invite to camp well i mean i think they they know what we know which is he's a
Starting point is 01:42:09 secondary assist merchant oh geez like yeah yeah cadre like i didn't i didn't understand that conversation with with cadre i think if you look at the fords they brought you're like yeah they they brought enough guys most of those guys aren't even going to make the team because team can is so deep in that forward group yeah like the cadre is odd man every team is so like of the of the four nation teams they're all so preposterously stacked like do you think henry yokiharu makes finland this year you know and nicholas montenpala you know i like montenpala i did too i think he was good the number one criticism of my uh sweden video that i did was like did you just forget about gabriel landis kog and the answer is yes oh i did he did not play in the regular season
Starting point is 01:42:56 i also noticed when i was doing uh when i posted the finland video steve is that all the comments were like, where's Michelli? He's a Leaf, and you completely forgot to talk about Michelli. He's Italian. He's Italian. Get it right, Hayden.
Starting point is 01:43:16 Does he represent Finland, though? Yes. You know what? It would be hilarious. Get ready. Get ready. If he doesn't make Finland, it would be amazing if he went and played for Italy.
Starting point is 01:43:28 I'm going to, first of all. And by the way, you got to do the live stream during it. italy game this year the all in italian yeah in italian i'll have to learn i don't know what is the app you're doing for to learn duolingo duolingo yeah you're still on that uh i am all right fire up italian on his phone jesse right now i have a streak get ready i can you do more than one language at once i don't know why not i don't use it also i think uh it It would be funny if we just called the video.
Starting point is 01:43:59 Hey, oh, yeah, I don't do it all in Italian. I do it all in Italian America. Oh, yeah, it's just swearing. Let's see if fanatics will send us a team Italy jersey for you. That says Dan Michelli. Yeah, and Michelli. I don't know if fanatics is making the Olympics. Oh, are they not?
Starting point is 01:44:20 And you know what jersey number? You know what jersey number? Oh, stop it. All right, let's do the press conference. Oh, fun. Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer. That's why every step and dollar raised matters.
Starting point is 01:44:36 On September 19th, join thousands in Toronto for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation Walk. Starting point is 01:45:02 You know, the same way you can skip an ad? I get it. I'm Siyaya and I live in Ice Cove. I've made some questionable decisions that didn't end up the way I planned. And today I'm still figuring it out. Somehow things usually get worse before they get better. Apparently, that's how I roll. So bundle up and come along for the bumpy ride.
Starting point is 01:45:23 Don't miss the new season of North of North starting September 8th on CBC Gem. I won't do any questions. We'll just do this one that Steve really wanted to do. Steve, what is your question that you read and you wanted to bring up? So we're going to come back after a full month off. We're not even going to ask a fan question. No, we have so many questions.
Starting point is 01:45:57 We can do an extended one tomorrow if you're light on topics there, Adam. But Steve really wanted to do something on David Booth. Yeah, okay. So. So. So. This story, by the way, I'm just going to let you know, is a... Oh, that's cool.
Starting point is 01:46:15 No, no. Oh. No, no. Adam's already hating. It is. But anyway. This is from Aussie Leafs Damn. Oh.
Starting point is 01:46:22 look into david booth dominating the australian ice hockey league so i did look into it and my heavens is it actually preposterous uh and i'm oh my god i'm tap dancing as i try the second leading score so so it's it's two people tied for the leading score of david booth's team okay the australian look at the way he's dominating australian ice hockey league okay he plays for the melbourne ice aihl right aihl second leading scorer on his team joachim erdugan of sweden i know him uh-huh 28 games played 64 points well Now, the highest scorers in this league score a shitload. It's not uncommon to see two, two and a half points per game.
Starting point is 01:47:24 28 games played, 64 points. David Booth has 34 points in just 14 games. Oh my God. Oh my God, right? That's a lot. What if I told you I'm lying and he has 34 goals in 14 games plus 30 assists 64 points in 14 games they shouldn't allow him in the league he's averaging over he's 40 years old he's averaging over four and a half points per game now he's not the first
Starting point is 01:48:01 former nhler to play in this league there have been other guys um uh i think uh oh god scott timmons i think ty wishart was another guy these are guys who played like a cup of coffee david booth was like a legitimate i'm sorry to scott timmons's family do not know that individual he was i want to say was he wasn't he world junior i don't know the booth was a legit guy like oh yeah yeah david was a person and i think it's i think it's fascinating to me because It's a double-edged sword. On one hand, it brings notoriety to the league. How often do we talk about the Australian Ice Hockey League on the show?
Starting point is 01:48:44 Yeah, no, you're getting the Michael Jordan. You're getting the Tom Brady of your sport automatically just inserted into here. It's pretty cool. Yes. Of your league, I should say. On the other hand, I think it makes the league look awful. A little cookie cutter, yeah. Rap league.
Starting point is 01:49:02 Well, they don't get paid. I don't know. No, they don't. So they get paid, they get, the league is an amateur league, but they receive- Oh, so it literally is rec league. Yeah, they receive non-monetary benefits such as housing, transportation, sometimes employment opportunities funded by sponsors. So it's a little bit more like Formula One, like your sponsors kind of put you on the team a little bit. Right.
Starting point is 01:49:23 But yeah, I can imagine that in Australia, it's probably not enough of a base for them to have like a salary yet. Yeah. To enter into the top 100 scorers of all time in that league, you need 95 points. Oh, my God. That's not a lot at all. He has 64 points in 14 games. Who's the all-time leading scorer?
Starting point is 01:49:46 The all-time leading scorer is the only player to ever score over 600 points. 600? Greg Oddie. Is it Tony Hand? It's not Tony Hand. It's not Tony Hand, Hayden. It is Greg Audie. All the top five scores are all Aussies.
Starting point is 01:50:05 Okay. They're all Aussies. Then there's a Czech at six. There's a Canadian at seven. There's a Canadian at 10 and 11. Okay, so how would Adam rank this segment against Tony Hand's segments? I don't know.
Starting point is 01:50:17 Oh, that's cool. Wow. That's so crazy. A former NHL player goes to Australia and dominates in a semi-amateur league. That's so crazy. i can't what are the stakes here this is what happened this is getting uh oh that's so cool for me yeah oh that's so cool it's getting a damn that's crazy it's getting a damn that's
Starting point is 01:50:37 not even a damn that's crazy be like oh that's so cool not the dtc no no it's no there's no damn that's crazy that's a higher level he's saying yeah it's not even that no that's below yeah what what does a tony hand segment get that's a damn that's crazy because it is legitimately crazy yeah yeah that is a damn hand is better than the first time i heard it by the time it's the 50th time i'm like i got it i got it adam says tony hand is better than david booth man yeah if if we did a live watch along of a david booth game i would be down for that i've seen highlights he's toying with them of course yeah it sounds like it based on the numbers kidding no he could go the next 20 games without a goal david booth and ice hockey in australia i'm like
Starting point is 01:51:20 wow yeah wow i get it i bet he scores a lot you're like no check it out it's a lot i'm like that's what i assumed because that's kind of what it should be but like what would have been crazy is if he got filled yeah but you're acting like he just left the nhl he's been playing in wherever the fuck land for years yes but pro leagues khl i think he was playing in in europe as well he so khl nhl's last nhl game was the 1718 season leafs right that's he does kind of a long time ago no it was uh that's a long time ago five years now um oh no that's jesse that's seven years that ain't five years anymore it's 2025 18 yeah that's 2018 yeah it's 2025 oh my god it is seven seven years ago 2018 is seven years ago then he went to the khl then he went to norway
Starting point is 01:52:12 which is actually how australians talk when they watch his no right they say norway yeah um didn't play in 2021 played in norway again and was under two points per game in his final or sorry in the second year in norway uh played in norway again 23 points in 16 games played in under a point a game in the german second league played in hungary earlier this year a professional team in hungary he was hungry and he was hungry and still only a little over two points per game there then he goes to australia and murders everyone with a machete what you've kind of just pointed out is how bad the australian league is so let me ask this you're not you're not doing australia's a favor this is not a great story right now but there's a way we
Starting point is 01:53:01 can upgrade it but go ahead well we can upgrade this story how much does a player need to dominate a league and how low does that league need to be for it to be kind of unfair well that's that's the point steve that's why it's not that interesting of a story this sounds like your beer league when you kicked out people because they were too good so this is hey nhl here eric lindros comes to the the eric lindros tournament this year right which we're doing in november yeah or easter seals yeah let's say him and john leclerc try their balls off try their absolute hardest yeah would anybody be shocked by this eric lindros dominates charity tournament no but are you nobody's surprised by that maybe he shouldn't be doing that well okay but david
Starting point is 01:53:44 booth what here's what i appreciate about this story it's not that he's dominating the aihl right and it's not that the aihl needs some time before there's more talent there fine that's cool clearly i think it's great that there's an amateur league there that's awesome what i think is interesting is his story i want to know why he was in denmark and what that was like what's hot ice hockey norway how dare you sorry norway i want to know what that's like i think the fact that he made some good money in the NHL and he's probably like, you know what? I got a family.
Starting point is 01:54:17 I think he's married. I know he's... I've seen him. I saw wedding pictures. Listen, as a one-time divorcee, just because you were married once doesn't mean you were married that way. How deep are you going in David?
Starting point is 01:54:27 But I would love to know. I'd love to have David on and go, David, dude, tell us about this. Like, I would love to know what... What's interesting about the story is not the amount of points he's scoring. It's the places he's played and how that compares to the NHL.
Starting point is 01:54:41 that's interesting he has played in kind of a ridiculously high number of countries yeah yes okay so you go to the nhl the khl and i think ryan whitney did a players tribune article about playing in the nhl versus the khl so we kind of know a little bit about that and then like i'd love to what's norway like what's that what's that and and by the way why are you doing this beyond well i just love the game like yeah you love the game but you love it so much you're like i need to experience it all over the world like what is it i love to know that not that's a story Not just played in the KHL. Played for three different teams.
Starting point is 01:55:13 Yeah. Across two different countries. That is the story. The stats are not the story. Former pro goes to semi-pro league and kicks ass is not a story. That is an expectation. No, no. I'm not saying all this to highlight.
Starting point is 01:55:27 A story happens when something unexpected happens. I'm not saying this to be like, wow, good for him. I'm saying this to be like, hey, man. You're being a bit of a jerk. No. 34 goals in 14 games. Holy shit. I want to know who his agent was.
Starting point is 01:55:40 I want to reach out to them, and I want to be like, can we get David Booth on? Because I would love to talk to him about that. I don't know if an agent was involved. Well, probably not now, but somebody's got his contact. Could I ring them up and be like, hey? Yeah, why not? Hey, I'm just looking to get in touch with David.
Starting point is 01:55:54 Why not? Maybe. That's how media requests go. I'm going to hit the button on this segment. All right, Jesse's hitting the button. I'm just trying to help you. I'm trying to make this story interesting. You never want to get DTC'd on the first show.
Starting point is 01:56:08 You didn't get DTC'd. You never want to get O-T-S-C'd on the first show. We're going to be back tomorrow with the actual questions. Marco Rossi! The Steve Dangle Podcast. Follow the guys on Twitter at Steve underscore Dangle at Adam W-Y-L-D-E and at Jesse Blake.
