Hi! You know, I always love to start the show with news that Luke Cunin might be signing somewhere soon.
That's all we got.
Oh, not even like news.
He's close to making a decision.
Yeah, that's like potential.
Listen, listen, you guys, if you don't understand what happened at the CJ show last year during their live show at Coburg, Boss of Pizza,
it then you missed a good one because somebody from the back of the room was like the leafs
need to get luke coonan in the way that like it was it it was like a guttural like please tell me
how they do this now he did end up getting traded at the trade deadline and it became my white whale
i was like now he needs to come to the leaf he does we need luke cut into the leafs for the
content and so therefore he might be man uh i gotta tell you there's 32 teams he might go to
i uh i doubt it now now i'm starting to think in terms of all right what's left but also who
needs what um one of the things i always talk about is you know you hear this player or this
team is in on this player they scored 75 points last year and then they don't get them and they
just go oh well guess we don't get them then no you gotta move on to plan b right it's weird if
you're like no we need the 75 point guy oh we can't get them oh no so the leafs for example
supposedly we're in on tanner judeau just heard that on the most recent episode of the chris
johnson don't you know don't you know now i do you know and are they just gonna go all right well
We don't get one of the most violent players in the league.
I guess we just stopped.
Well, they got Pizzetta, but he's not an everyday guy.
He's not an everyday guy.
He's violent, though.
Well, no, maybe they just stopped looking.
That's all.
I don't think they're going to stop looking.
That's all.
No.
Just stop.
So what's next?
I think it's the trade markets.
One thing I do want to say, too, at the top of the show is we're talking about the trade market.
Listen, I don't want to be the one to let everybody down, but I'm going to.
A player saying they would move,
they would waive their no trade clause
via back channel to a certain team
is not the same as player is going to be traded to that team.
So the only reason that I give this any air at all
is because it's Terry Koshan and I like Terry
and I think Terry does a really good job.
I like Terry too.
And Terry's not out there for, you know, drumming it up for the likes.
He just kind of says it how it is.
And Terry heard that Nazem Khadri wouldn't block a trade to Toronto.
That is not the same as the Leafs are going to trade for Khadri.
As much as people want it for the vibes and whatever, Steve, you tweeted yesterday what?
Leafs flames rumors are banned on this show and they should be banned from your brain
the flames are not trading anybody to the Leafs why because their owner who is a very weird guy
who tries to buy elections is mad and bitter at Brad Treliving and who's the other guy the
president uh don maloney don maloney don baloney i say baloney you can't you don't make that joke
it's not okay for you to make that joke i'm half italian i can make that joke you can't make that
is baloney italian is it actually i had to kick your ass balone balone is is like a it's like a
city in germany balone that's cologne oh oh now but there is also balone there is a balone there's
a balloon i don't think there is a balloon maybe it's bologna uh bologna oh okay all right wow
look at that i mean oh that's where hey that's where the emilio romagna grand prix is based out
of bologna murray don you're off the hook i'm no longer mad at you i am now mad at adam
uh anyway anyway brad's living quits job and they're mad at him and uh they're good the
Leafs are going to get Nazem Kadri in the same way that they got Nikita Zdorov and Elias Lindholm and Rasmus Andersen.
We have it on pretty good authority that when the Leafs were charging hard after Chris Tanev a couple seasons ago.
And Chris Tanev.
That they offered more than Dallas did.
And Calgary would have preferred him stay in the Western Conference and take less than trade him to Toronto.
Yeah, because they're big, massive diaper-shitting babies.
They wanted Zdorov and Tanev.
So it's a funny thing, but that is what's happening.
And the other thing I want to just alert you to.
One thing on Murray Edwards, the owner of the Calgary Flames.
He is a member of the Order of Canada.
Marilyn Dennis is also a member of the Order of Canada.
Order of Ontario.
Ah, it's not the same thing?
No, it's not.
Oh, well, I just wanted to say congratulations.
Well, thank you very much.
My mother is, yes.
I thought they were the same thing.
Order of Ontario.
Up your rank, Marilyn Dennis.
Maybe she'll get upgraded.
Yeah, maybe.
maybe listen uh it's pretty cool it was very cool it was very very cool and they were gonna have
like a whole dinner and then they had to cancel it so they're gonna do it next year so they're
gonna have like a double cohort ah order of ontario why did they cancel i don't i think
the tariffs had something to do with it actually yeah it's like there's like an emergency and
shit i was gonna get honored at our high school oh i was too we were going in the same thing
and there was an assembly scheduled for april 2020 yeah oh that's different so we yeah but
we just never got it then yeah it never happened i would have loved that that would have been a
very that would have been very special to me i was looking forward to apparently we're on the
wall there somewhere but i don't know we are indeed on the wall because when does loser and
visit when does the order of canada thing is it gonna happen then or yeah next june i think so
they're not just not gonna do it at all no they are gonna do it okay just like we don't know like
this year they're not doing they're not doing it this year there's too much there's too much
shit going wow yeah there's too much shit because our american friends have chosen chaos now uh
When it comes to the Leafs and the Flames,
and when it specifically comes to Nazem Khadri,
I understand why everybody wants him back.
I love the man.
Sure.
And he loves, and he said, the Koshan thing said,
he loves playing in Calgary.
It's not an issue.
But if Calgary wanted to trade him to Toronto,
he's not standing in the way of it.
I get that.
I want the gold in Fort Knox.
I would also like to remind people that Nazem Khadri
is not 28 years old anymore.
And he's making 7 million bucks a year,
which becomes easier to swallow the more the cap goes up but and he's got I think four or five
years left on that deal uh we you gotta like and then what do the Leafs have to offer the Flames
so even if you were putting a trade uh together the Flames are trying to make the playoffs why
would they trade Nazem Qadri I I don't see a fit I don't either and it's sad a fit but like I'm not
even going to bother to think
of a fit. They're not
trading him here. Okay. They are
not doing it. So tomorrow when they do, you can clip
Steve. Put it all over the internet. The Flames
I... The last deal
between the Leafs and Flames. Go.
That's a really good question.
I know the answer. I know you do.
I figured this was trivial. It's so minor.
I don't know. Jesse,
do you have any thoughts? No, go ahead. Okay.
I think you might have his stick, Jesse.
Do you use a
Radom Zahorna stick? I do have a Radom Zahorna.
Oh, Radom Zahorna was a Leaf?
Radom Zahorna, he played games for the...
He was a big Marley.
Yeah, yeah, he was a very big Marley.
Radom Zahorna was traded to the Leafs for Dryden Hunt.
Oh, wow.
I remember Dryden Hunt.
I liked Dryden Hunt.
He had a good little run in Calgary, too.
Yes, yes, and I believe he just got a raise.
That deal was one of the final deals that Kyle Dubas ever made as Leafs GM.
They have not made a deal together since Brad Treliving became GM.
So it was Brad and Kyle that made that deal?
yes so it was a deal that's a great point adam it's a it's a deal that involved brad
for living but he was on the other side of it they will not make a deal with him they won't
do it until they prove that they will on something minor i'm not gonna what a waste of time
what all the i am surprised nobody's learned their lesson yet i don't know how many times
we need to say guys all the time we wasted on zadarov and tanev and uh who was the one that
we were absolutely convinced.
I think it was Zdorov.
It was Zdorov
because Dan Milstein
was tweeting about it.
Yes!
And the flame said
out of their butts
and didn't do it.
Yeah, he tweeted
like a picture of Toronto
or something like that.
He's like, what's up, Toronto?
Are you ready for Nikita Zdorov?
Because he's like
coming into town.
Yeah, right.
It was when they were
playing the Leafs.
Dude.
They're not doing it.
They're not doing it.
It's a, oh, well,
what would a hypothetical...
No.
Give me another one.
Give me another one
i'll do it i'm not doing this one uh yeah so that that you know that's just the way it is
uh but i wanted to i wanted to address well luke coonan has to come first and then i did want to
talk about the nazim khadri thing because there are a lot of people out there fantasizing and
listen i hope it happens too but i don't believe that it will how's that that's perfect now i want
to talk about uh there's a lot of things to talk about today as we kind of um as the dust settles
from from free agency thank you steve for getting that little white fluff off my my shirt um but the
i think the most important thing is again you know toronto might not love to hear this but the
biggest free agent signing of the day and people like it's actually trade uh but the biggest free
agent signing is mitchell marner and people hate when you call it a trade uh well or or it's
tampering or whatever uh now the uh golden knights uh and marner did a press conference a couple of
days ago we haven't had the chance to go through it so i wanted to do that a little bit and i've
clipped some things and just so people can hear the answers because what you often get is and
i'm just going to send you the youtube link here what you often get when you get these press
conferences is here's 20 seconds lifted out of an answer that might be two minutes long
that you can spin a certain way uh or you see something written uh and it's out of context
and it doesn't make sense and it's like well this guy's an asshole and i know tones important there
was a lot of there are a lot of borderline psychotic tweets right now i think a lot of
them are are meant with some humor like uh but but the there's a there's how the angry leaves
fans feel there's how the sad and disappointed leave fans feel and then there's like a place
in the middle where this should actually live and i i want to go through this because i think
it illustrates some of it now can i tease something sure marner and era wasted shot yesterday
why are you such a coward
why haven't you released it yet
it needs to be edited
an LFR video
the file is like 7 or 8 gigabytes
this one was I think 22 or 23
so this is a documentary
how long do you think it'll be
like 45 minutes
what's your longest video ever
like 45 minutes
the blue room tour
might have been an hour but that's a tour of an entire
room
with uh no it's gonna be jesse he says an entire room like it's a big room
piece of crap laughing laughing at that that is not a big room a pretty big room it's a single
bed size room it's long it is long for for a place where all you do is shoot videos is actually a
pretty good space it's got to be triple the size of the last blue room yeah like i would spend time
in that room in Oshawa and I
was like, you know what? I love this little
thing. And then
the first time I visited it
after setting up the new one, I was like
this is a blue room for ants!
There's videos of me
running from one side to the other. How
did I do that? It's three
steps. Anyway.
What was great about that room is when you stepped
on the carpet, you never knew if it was going to be soaked with water
or not, right?
The amount of times
I went down there.
And I was like, if my sock gets wet, I'm going to snap.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Got to love a bad foundation.
But you fixed it.
Sure does.
Good of you.
And sold the house to a family member.
So it's still in the family.
Oh, you're just doing everything.
Now, let's talk about this.
So I guess the first thing is Kelly McCrimmon talks for a while.
And we're going to skip Kelly.
We're going to go, Jesse, right to 5225, where Kelly hands off the jersey to Mitch Marner.
I know everybody wants to talk about the fact that Paul Marner walked in at a certain point, but so did his family and whatever.
And it's like, so here's the jersey, here's the handoff, and here's your ex hard-launching their new relationship.
Just several days after you've broken up, this is you and the one she told you not to worry about finally getting together after liking each other's photos and DMing jokes, LOL, for years.
and it i have to be honest i'm gonna just i'm just gonna be a fan here for a second it stings
to watch this a little bit let's just call it what it is this is why people are reacting negatively
because it hurts dude i so i was talking to someone yesterday and we were just we'll pause
it there for a sec jess no no you keep oh i was like what uh i was talking to uh lee fan yesterday
um and he was just like he was at some of the games from the washington series
in 2017 i went to two of those games i saw game three leafs won it in overtime tyler bozak
game six also went to overtime and they were eliminated in overtime and and we cheered them
off the ice there was a few second silence because we were upset that obviously we were sad that they
got eliminated we held out hope that there would be a game seven there there was a time where we
hoped for game seven that's how long Marner's been a leaf and we cheered them off the ice because
what what an effort what an effort what a season what a reason to hope for the future and we were
just saying if you had gone back 10 years ago and told fans how this was going to go they would
never believe you the most pessimistically fan in your life uh 10 years ago wouldn't have believed
you yeah yep that that it would end this way and it would end so poorly so his first playoff run
with the leafs ended with them getting eliminated and cheered off the ice when they got eliminated
and it ended with him literally getting booed.
Booed every time he touched the puck.
Every time he touched the puck in his own building.
Seeing Mitch Marner in a Leafs jersey makes me extremely happy.
I'm very happy he put it on.
No bitterness.
I'm happy that he's away from the Leafs because...
You mean a Vegas Golden Knights jersey.
What did I say?
You said Leafs.
Vegas Golden Knights jersey.
Muscle memory.
Seeing him put that on because the mix didn't work.
We should all be happy that the Leafs no longer have this player
because we know how it played out now.
And I don't think you should be sad.
I think you should be very happy for the new era of Leafs
because there's finally change
and the evidence that we've had for the last nine years
that they need change.
Yeah, I think in much like Dave Bolin
once saved Brandon Shanahan from himself
by signing with the Florida Panthers,
Mitch Marner saved the Leafs from themselves
and saved himself from the Leafs by making this change.
And I think, you know, this press conference,
he is a little bit lighter a little he's he's always a little awkward in front of a microphone
uh but uh let's have a listen to uh they just flat out ask a first question here uh why did
you want to be in vegas and i will tell you when to pause it vegas being the team you wanted to
choose um well i mean obviously the winning regimen they've put up through the last five
years of really since they've been in the league um got such a competitive team every year got such
good players here um you know the living arrangements from talking to patch ready and
revo just through the last couple weeks um you know it seemed like everything was a pretty good
fit for my wife and i and our new son and um yeah the winning aspect of this team really helped and
everything as well and you know the great players they have here so um lucky enough it all worked
out and um you know this is where we wanted to be all right pause it there so uh so that one
And that quote right there already, it made some news because I think people misinterpreted it.
Yes.
And he said, talking to Revo and Patch Ready.
Recently.
Recently.
Yes.
But in the last few weeks, like, and you'll see as this press conference plays out, this has been a flirtation for over a year.
And that's okay.
You're allowed to do that.
And we're going to talk about the effects of that.
But it's like if the Leafs had been like, hey, what if we brought in a third?
And then a year later, they end up with the third because they tried to trade them.
They did.
Yeah.
Jesse, if you have anything to add on that one, I mean, it's a short quote, but there are some better ones coming up here.
I just want to open it.
I think this is somebody who is benefiting from not being a Toronto Maple Leaf anymore.
like i think as much as the fans wanted a divorce from him and i think it was the best for for both
parties like he i think is going to enjoy his time in vegas more than he ever enjoyed his time
in toronto i don't think he'll ever admit it for at least a year maybe two and as much as three i
think he hated every moment here yeah i think he was looking forward to this i think he's looking
forward to being in vegas and i think he knows that that's a better life for him than living
in toronto and yeah i think he came to that realization sometime in the last couple years
it didn't start that way obviously you know things came to a point but um like this past season
every time the camera and microphone were put on his face it seemed like an infliction on his body
and soul yeah and the greatest regret amongst everything is that both sides didn't see it
earlier and i'm like for the rest of my life that's how it'll be and it'll be a shame that
shanahan or dubas didn't see all of this earlier and mitch marner didn't see it earlier and that
they all could have divorced a couple years before the kids were born well and and i think jesse uh
that's such a great way to put it because he references that later uh but we'll get to to
the next one here at 54 40 uh what's more attractive or what's attractive about the
challenge of playing in vegas uh this is about a minute and a half answer question i mean
you know you want to be in a place where you want to you want to win that's that's the whole goal of
what why we do this um you want to hoist that stanley cup this team has shown that they can do
it um you know i'm lucky enough to now hopefully bring another piece in to help bring it back here
um you know i think we put the most pressure on ourselves as hockey players that's how we play
the game we want to win every single night you want to win every battle you want to win
anything you can all the time um you know like i said before this team has since it's entered
the league really pushed to you know push the boundaries and and be that winning team and um
yeah that's where i want to be i want to be in a winning situation um you know i've been
lucky enough that uh i've been on some very good teams that just you know haven't sorry
everyone that's my father i knew dad's phone ring welcome to vegas hey uh-huh um yeah um but um
yeah i've been very lucky to be with some very good teams and very good players and um
you know unfortunately enough we just didn't uh we weren't able to get over the hump and that
sucks a lot to be honest but um you got to look past things um we got a new great opportunity
here with an unbelievable team like i've spoken about the last you know a couple minutes and
we're very fortunate and lucky enough to be here all right stop pause it can you tell me how much
his watch is worth i it looks like um because that's a that's a chronograph and it looks like
it might be an odd mars uh chronograph i think which i didn't know they even made them but the
if it's an autumn mars paquette uh i don't even know if i'm pronouncing that properly those can
be two hundred thousand dollars or more but i'm not saying that that's what that is uh it wouldn't
shocked me if it was i'm just looking at the bezel on it and if you look up automars paquette they
they've got that sort of steel with a bolted on thing i love watches if you're not allowed to
make fun of me for birds this is my this is my this is my watch this was 400 12 years ago uh
and it's and it's not even technically like it's it's a burberry watch which is not a watch brand
it's just a clothing brand that has a thing on it so i bought this when i got my first morning show
none of the hands are moving but that is not well yeah because there's no battery in it because it's
not fixed yeah so a watch like this this is what's called it uh what do they call with this they call
it a um watch where it's basically a brand buys a watch that they just slap a name on and then
they upcharge you so this is the first watch i bought and then i learned about watches and i was
like oh you these are actual watches these are brands that are like um oh you know like whenever
you see um uh i don't know what's what's a big brand like a dolce and gabbana watch it's not
a dolce and gabbana watch it's hey we put our name on this watch so we could charge you a fortune for
it now this watch happens to be a well-made one i just haven't put the batteries in it but uh if i
could spend my 400 differently or if i would if i was going in the future i love this watch i would
buy a watch watch and an automars paquette is one of the best watches it will never lose time
it's an absolute fortune to buy you should look them up they're very cool sometimes life throws
your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i
think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks
about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they
never clean my windows oh and their way around on that is like well it's a patio window you can do
that yourself and i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff
because you've got to have that scraper thing
and the washer thing.
The chemicals.
You've got to have the right chemicals.
See, that's what I'm saying.
That's why I used TaskRabbit
and I employed a tasker.
Here's the thing.
TaskRabbit connects you with taskers in your area
for furniture assembly, home repairs,
lawn maintenance, mounting, window cleaning,
all that stuff.
Here's the deal.

uh now that's a that's an expensive piece of item i believe it is i signed a 96 million dollar
i believe that's what that is i could be wrong on that but that is that that bezel head which
is the circle around it yeah that is the that to me looks like automars but i you know there could
be some watch fanatics in the chat who've got a better look on it um now uh let's move on to
one of the quotes that i think people got really pissed about again because it's referenced again
and that is the mentioning revo and patches lifestyle in vegas and this time mentioning
privacy we'll start at 56 57 jesse
i guess it's pretty special so um you know like i said i got lucky enough to talk to revo and
patch ready quite a bit just about everything off the strip living wise um the schooling wise
um you know just how tight net the communities are um the privacy wise in that aspect too so
yeah a lot of things just checked our box you know we um my wife and i like to go out and
you know enjoy ourselves and have nice dinners and stuff like that and we can still do that
going down to the strip or you can do that in the summerland area and that's um that's something
that really dragged our attention that one that one's a little pointed yeah that one's i can't go
out in toronto and do anything and i not a fan of that you couldn't like he's saying it directly
okay so i think it's a automars piquette royal oak offshore automars
royal oak offshore can i just say if i had a laptop in front of me how you would scream at
me yeah okay so i'm just letting you know you would it's it's 50 grand that watch if i'm right
on the watch it's 50 grand you would throw steve out of the window real yeah sorry so yeah so he
went thrift shopping you're saying yeah yeah he's eating with us pours i mean what dude 96 90 sorry
96 million dollar contract he can afford a quarter million dollar watch yeah but over 200 million in
career earnings in contracts canadian yeah he'll be fine uh now so he talked about revo and patches
in that and he then talked about the privacy it let's be clear here and i want to talk about
why the privacy aspect might be important to the Marners.
Because there has been a lot in the news about players.
And I'm thinking specifically, Nick Ehlers yesterday,
there was a conversation from Drager on TSN
about how Ehlers wants to go to a quieter market.
Because playing in Winnipeg, especially,
you're a god there, but you're also in a fishbowl.
That's not a huge city.
Everybody probably knows where you live.
It's the only team.
It's the only team.
I mean, you get the Blue Bombers, but yeah.
I'm talking major pro sports teams.
Out of the four leagues that are really significant.
This is Manitoba Moose erasure.
Yeah, exactly.
Because they make so much money, the Moose.
They probably do.
Sorry, Milt Stiegel.
You got to remember Marner's, what's happened to him here.
You've heard sort of some of the basic stories.
After the Montreal series, people were throwing Habs jerseys
and golf balls on his cottage front lawn is that out there i yeah i'm pretty sure it is there were
people that have you know that have thrown garbage on his front lawn in toronto uh when you know they
got eliminated and you played like garbage so people are literally that is psychotic behavior
and then he and his wife and tyson berry made a joke about this so i know that this is out there
uh but he and his wife were held up at gunpoint by somebody who wanted their range rover yeah
Yeah, that was a news story.
Yeah.
That's not.
And so that's not fan related.
That's just being a rich person in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Yeah, it wasn't like, hey, 16.
But.
Your expected goals are garbage.
Get out of the car.
It was a crime.
From the people I have spoken to.
And they had no idea it was Mitch Marner.
Yes, they didn't care.
From the people I've spoken to, he and his family felt less and less comfortable here.
And I think not necessarily the fan behavior, which is wrong and stupid.
And by the way, anybody listening to this story, people are like, oh, this is the garbage Toronto fans.
Listen, I hate to tell you this.
Actually, I don't hate to tell you this.
Every single fan base that has an intense faction of it will do shit like this.
That's not true.
And it doesn't make it okay.
It doesn't mean I'm excusing it.
It doesn't mean, though, that every Toronto Maple Leaf fan is that.
I am so ready for the mountain of sarcasm to come out of Steve's mouth.
It's not true because there was a player who got death threats and people poured, I think
it was like cow dung fertilizer on this player's driveway and front lawn because he had a bad
performance.
Oh, sorry.
That was a player on the Saskatchewan Rough Riders of the CFL.
Yep.
People are nuts.
Yeah.
You're going to find crazy people in every city.
If you live in a city, you know crazy people.
A beer got thrown on the ice.
in game seven and it was fuck those classless toronto fans this is what they do when the
red sox gm traded devers like two weeks ago all of the fans docked his home address on twitter
oh really yeah yeah that's fucking crazy go go to this man's house and i want to know how that
affects the leafs now i think and and nico what is it nico harrison yeah and uh no no sorry one
leaf fan threw a beer and it was fuck leaf fans they're classless assholes a lady dumps a beer
on Kisperi Kapanen during the Stanley Cup Final?
Do you hear a fucking thing about that?
No, I didn't even know that happened.
It happened on national television!
I missed it.
No one gave a shit!
I've said this before, I'm going to say it again.
There are lots of people in hockey media
and Canadian sports media who just hate Toronto.
they hate Toronto deeply bitterly and it might have pushed its way down to its psyche we're alone
there's a lot of us but we're alone they have an inherent bias against the Leafs and I'll die on
that hill I think they hate this I don't think anybody's just they hate that team yeah yeah sure
they go anywhere throughout Canada I've had so many pleasant experiences throughout Canada if
you're a canadian i i strongly encourage you to go anywhere in canada i i had a friend who said
oh i'm going to halifax tomorrow i was immediately filled with jealousy i was like oh my god i love
halifax so much but there are lots of places you can go in canada and someone's attitude will
change the moment they find out you're from toronto dude they don't like you on principle
dude you should you should have heard what happened when i was on the morning show in
calgary and people found out i was from toronto that first week that was it brutal brutal slicker
brutal that was it for you i mean for them forever yeah yeah no you're they they thought i voted for
pierre elliott trudeau uh did you own cowboy boots i did and i still do i still have my boots
because you are they like the nice ones they are because you got to soak them in water and then sit
in them and that's how you get them to get around all this shit like because i lived in calgary i
I guess you're right.
Is that a big watch, Robin?
I know a dude who owns, I think they're three grand, $3,000 cowboy boots.
Oh, mine aren't that much.
Mine are like...
You're talking about the same person I think you're talking about.
It's a hat.
Oh, no, no.
He owns that.
I know the hat.
The hat's a whole other story.
That's like several grand.
Yeah.
The boots, too, are pretty damn good.
Okay, my boots are not that good.
We're talking about the same guy.
Yes, we are.
That's hilarious.
My boots are like the working class ones.
they were they were 250 bucks my boots were 250 bucks 10 years ago so i feel like that was pretty
expensive uh but i was like i'm gonna get some damn good cowboy boots and it's also really once
you get them molded they're actually the most comfortable shoes you have because you like you
walking around stampede if you're if you haven't molded those they're gonna tear your heel off
so you get them you get them molded and then they're great oh anyway uh the the privacy thing
so watch this when marner's talking about that i want you i want that to land for you in the he
can't i i understand and probably agree with some of the people who say he can't handle the pressure
in big games in this city and i saw it on the ice but i also empathize when they think we want our
privacy back i want to be able to go out for dinner and not have people come up to me and
listen i i have to i'm just gonna big dog a little bit here i lived that my mother uh when we went
out for dinner from the time i was young people approached that was part of our lives i didn't it
didn't bother me it didn't bother her some people that bothers there are going to be some people who
are like adam it's outrageous for you to make that comparison and i'm here to tell you he's a
thousand percent right yeah your mom is an enormous celebrity order of ontario right right there you
go order of canada so so i think just bringing it back to you know that conversation there have
been times where this family has had to have security outside all night yep there and and so
you have the robbery at gunpoint which i think changes your life forever i don't think anybody
that's ever been robbed at gunpoint uh ever is the same it's traumatized and you have and i think it
changes your view of the place that you live and i think there's an impression that they weren't
safe here not from the fans necessarily but i think there's an impression in that camp a little
bit that toronto's not a safe city it's incorrect generally but that hasn't been their experience
and their experience is personal to them so i want so i think both can be true they can want
their privacy and also you can say yeah but he didn't perform in big playoff moments both are
true but i it also speaks to like mitch marner isn't built for this and i think that's a shame
because like the the security thing and like being a professional athlete and having people wanted to
come up and talk to you that stuff some a lot of people in pro sports embrace that stuff well like
LeBron has 24-hour security for a reason LeBron has a fortress yeah like and he's very happy with
his fortress is he a billionaire yet I can't believe this is my life I don't think he's a
billionaire he's gotta he might be he probably probably look his Nike contract is worth a
billion dollars I know eventually yeah yeah so I guess in that respect that you can call him a
billionaire but like there's people who go towards that he wanted to go to la and be the biggest star
in los angeles and miami's not a small market either no no no one's saying that um so like
mitch marner it's it's a shame he wasn't built for this market and that he was drafted he tried
so long to fit in but i wish we had guys like more guys like austin willie who are very happy
with having fans come out and and talk to them like william neilander if you just want to run
into him hang around the queen west area he's always outside like i've run into walking his dog
off leash apparently yeah he just kind of hangs around and that this stuff has never scared him
and there's people who have played for the leafs and it does and i wish and i i hope the leafs
realize these players that they need um earlier on and these players who aren't built for this
don't come you have to you as keith pelly said you have to embrace the fans you have to embrace
the media to play here yeah you do there was there was a quote i saw recently it was it was
shack talking about yannis and going to la and i've brought this up before and the first thing
he mentions is taxes and i was just like so i thought those didn't matter no they matter one
of the most financially successful athletes of all time is like so this is the most important thing
um but he also talked about you don't have to go to a market like la because there are no small
markets in the nba yeah which is true because there are literally small markets what is shack
talking about it's because the nba is so big and nfl too right and baseball for god well baseball
there's small markets yeah i guess you're right no you're right i'm sure most of the pittsburgh
pirates can go to the grocery store basketball there's no small market nfl there's no small
market you know what maybe baseball is the comparable for the nhl maybe yeah um it's just
a poorly run equivalent well because we always put it up against the nba because they run
concurrently yeah right like their seasons but they're in totally different ballparks completely
and and like just fan bases consuming all of this sports media like i i don't think i think
there's people who don't appreciate how completely foreign these complaints are to athletes in other
sports like yep i can't remember the last time a basketball star was like you know i just want
to be able to go to the grocery store and just want to you know the basketball players will say
i'm fucking glad i don't have to go to the grocery store i pay someone yeah and i'm also like i i can
put up with not being able to go eat at earl's for 10.9 million dollars yeah like if you want
to give me 11 million dollars a year you can interrupt my dinners now yeah yeah now now jesse
though so here's the problem yeah what if you had the choice between 12 million dollars and i can't
go out and 12 million dollars and i can and that goes back to exactly what you were just talking
about the nhl is different in that there are markets where you can do that make that money
and hide yes that's why i think so many guys love florida i am disappointed that the nhl is in this
spot where i wish there wasn't these markets well and there won't be very soon guys it's changing
hopefully very quickly when i when i hear nicolai ehlers you know we don't it doesn't have to be
Marner and I and I wrote about this at length in my book and it had nothing to do with Marner it was
my focus was Radko Kudas and like Ryan O'Reilly like it's so disappointing that hockey is in this
spot because to me it is anti-pro sports so you I I completely understand the allure of that life
So wait a sec. I get generational wealth on top of generational wealth.
And I get all my privacy.
You're talking about every member of the Florida Panthers right now and how they look at this.
Yeah, but not for long. They keep winning. That small market thing's going away.
I hope so. I hope we look at this and there's 32 Torontos.
Yep. And I think we are coming to that.
Like you look at all people are talking about is the success of the Florida Panthers.
And then before that, it was the success of the Vegas Golden Knights.
And then before that, it was the success.
And I'm not talking about on-ice success.
I'm talking about off-ice.
I'm talking about, and then before that, it was the Nashville Predators.
And before that, it was the Tampa Bay Lightning.
And so, you know, this is a moment in time.
But if a well-run league is a well-run league, there are no small markets.
And I think with the Ehlers conversation, which we can get into a little bit later,
Ehlers would be like playing for Green Bay.
It's a small city.
You're in a fishbowl.
You don't get away, right?
Toronto, you can hide.
You can hide in a city this big easily.
And it's unfortunate, bringing it back to Mitch, that these events unfolded the way that they did.
And as a Leaf fan, I can't own that some asshole put trash all over his lawn.
But I can empathize and go, man, that fucking sucks, and I would hate that.
Well, I don't know if people do blame you for the trash on his lawn.
Well, yeah, but they're morons, so who cares?
Fair enough.
If I'm not taking life advice from you, I'm certainly not taking criticism from you.
Do you know what I'm saying?
And I just don't care.
My point is, when I look at why Mitch...
You've got to look at the motivation of the athlete.
Jesse nailed it.
He's not meant for a market like this.
He's meant for a market like that.
Yeah, I don't want this guy on my team.
I know he can't perform here.
Yeah, and we saw it.
If he has success in Vegas, he'll be like, yeah.
And my question is, and we'll go to the next question here in a second.
my question is you get it a lot of people we talked about this for years we got it why didn't
the leafs get it and when when keith pelly walked into brendan shanahan's office at some point
and said we're done here and then it reminds me i gave them shorts it
shanning here's your parting shorts
there was no logical justification hold on let me finish the point i was going to make
i interrupted this point let me finish my point when when michael and lauer talked about pierre
dorian uh getting getting turfed michael and lauer was very matter of fact and i love when
michael and lauer talks to the press he probably shouldn't but i love when he does and what did
he say he said I talked to Pierre and this mistake that he made cost us a first round pick
and I said the result of that should be forfeiture of your job and when I look at Shani this is the
same thing only worse because this wasn't a this was a mistake but it was intentional
you lost us not just a first round pick but a star thank god we were able to grab something for him
but at the time when shanney was fired we were going to get nothing and he was never coming back
and for keith pelly and for ed rogers and tony staffieri at rogers there is no other option but
you cannot be here anymore and the frustrating part is everybody warned them you went through
coaches how many assistant coaches how many head coaches how many new players how many this how
many that whatever and you can blame the flat cap like kelly mccrimmon did no i blame you not
recognizing the market conditions changing and not adjusting on the fly you morons and so when
when we look at this scenario
Shani was warned
he was warned on this show
he was warned on all the media said it
all the fans were saying it
and yet here we are
the birth of the core four
is when Marner signs his contract
why that
Willie was already under contract
JT was already under contract
Austin was already under contract
Mitch was the fourth
fourth one to sign his deal
that is the birth of the core four world stops in 2020 cap stays flat
the plan with those contracts is the players are going to get better the cap is going to go up
and the plan only works if both those things happen at the same time
if the cap goes up and the players don't get better it doesn't work
if the players get better and the cap goes up or doesn't go up it doesn't work what happens
all those players got better willie got better austin got better mitch got better
john aged i think john was pretty fucking good he was pretty fucking good we're paying for his
peak he did age steady three of the four got significantly better yeah john stayed steady
yeah like last year 38 goals stay cap stayed flat you must abandon your plan
they're like let's go through the 2020 playoffs what it's it was COVID yeah it's not like they
were going to make a move through that but then in the offseason there were warning signs about
that 2020 team by the way of course oh yeah and then the the Canadian season happens but again
it's weird it's COVID there's no fans 21-22 Tampa you lose to Tampa to me after the 21-22 season
there's no logical justification to keeping the core four together i feel that way about the
montreal one yeah i think it was a year earlier because even i agree in front of no fans they
couldn't get it done i know i know like i thought the pressure was the fans well no one there to
watch it that's not true because uh they actually 500 nurses they choked on the series when they
allowed like yeah 500 people in mass like all the way up in the front that was too much too much
but any anyway i agree but you could make the argument oh totally but after 2022
here's here i'll give you an argument yeah we took the stanley cup champs to seven
oh sounds familiar sounds very familiar fuck i cannot stomach that nonsense it's beneath all of
us knock it off it's a loser mentality it's not it's just not straight up it's also straight up
loser ass no it's it's fine it's factually true it doesn't tell you anything it's using the truth
to lie yes and it's a loser ass mentality if you were close you would have won yep if you're close
you would have got close they weren't close you're on the first round you weren't close
that's not close and then you get your bottom your bottoms padded by florida in 2023 2024 you
lose the bruins the same way they were close and then this year like yes shanahan should be
borderline unemployable he's in the hockey hall of fame he clearly knows his shit he started pretty
well with the Leafs but you know we we often talk about Dubas and too much too soon Shanahan was way
too much too soon he was a he was a first-time president he was a rookie head of the department
of player safety to president but that's how the NHL does it like wiki called Gary Bettman and said
who should I hire and Gary said well here's one of my guys oh Bettman fucked the Leafs you say
well it was unjustifiable beyond 2022 he did do good things early he changed culture
i am not going to take away shanny's first three or four years i'm not i just won't do it he did
a great job in those first three or four years but the last half of his time in toronto he was
dominated by fear the man was frozen i mean and and the worst player on the worst part about it
is the board at mlse continued to let him do it they liked him and so and and because shanny's
very good at managing up he's very good at at the people working the people above him and god
blessing he made a lot of money doing it and so maybe if the guy at the helm wasn't so busy
strong-arming and alienating that's not who kept him there it was larry tannenbaum who kept him
there just like larry kept messiah there it was the rogers guys wanted him out damn two years ago
terrible the worst person you know makes a great point now let's talk about um let's go to 58 43
jesse because you know one of the things and and mitch sort of confirms this in this clip but i've
been telling you for months that Mitch Marner told the Leafs at the beginning of the season
we are not negotiating he alludes to it here but we're going through this contract and we're going
to free agency and then two days before free agency begins he doesn't go to free agency why
does that happen let Mitch explain um it was a wild one it was unexpected in a way um you know
we didn't know what was really going to happen um I expressed to my agent that um you know we had a
couple teams that we really liked and really wanted to look forward to meeting with and talking with
and um you know i thought through just speculation stuff might really start falling around draft
night um you know i think that's when stuff kind of happens especially with signing trade stuff
um so we were kind of just hanging out at home not knowing really what was going to happen
with a bit of speculation maybe something might happen eventually just um and then yeah i don't
know my agent called um you know we kind of got the word on friday night that uh something might
be going down with Vegas and Toronto and you know how that feels to my wife and I and like I said
this was a spot that was very high on my list and you know we wanted to come here and um kind of
went back to my agent said you know I'm I'm open to doing this if if we can find a way to do it and
um you know a couple hours later Kelly called me and said that uh you know we got a deal going on
so uh was very happy very um very fortunate and yeah I don't know you know we thought about going
free agency but this is a place we want to be we don't want to lose that opportunity and
we want to join this hockey team all right pause it there so you know this is a this is what this
man wanted it's his right to want it and i also think it's relevant that a couple of the other
teams that were high on his list like carolina's name came up because they wanted mitch never did
i hear mitch wanted carolina i did hear mitch wanted dallas uh but obviously with ranton and
and the cap situation dallas would have taken him but it's like well you can't fit them champions
are built up the right wing yeah that's that's what i learned over the shanahan era um and uh
and there were probably a couple of the two but dallas and and vegas were the front runners
one of the ones that i had heard was los angeles but i think and i think ken holland's reaction to
that they might have been better off i think he made the right call ken holland had a really bad
july 1st and and you know i think we'll talk about the kings i'm sure but it's a it's it's a
generationally bad run of general managers with that la kings team so he goes to the team that's
had a long sustained thing of success now two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer

And what better way than with a delicious Pret organic coffee starting at just $1 all day every day now until December 31st.
You gotta try breakfast at A&W.
At participating A&W locations in Ontario.
We'll go to one hour, 20 seconds, Jesse, because he talks about how Kelly McCrimmon had been interested in him for a while.
And this got under people's skins, but I can sort of understand what he's saying here.
Well, I guess that really kind of hit trade deadline day.
I think it was a day.
You know, I think the day prior we got offered a trade to go somewhere else.
My wife was seven or eight months pregnant at the time.
And, you know, we weren't really going to go somewhere that was maybe just going to be a short stint.
If we were going somewhere, we were going to sign for an extension, you know, raise our child there and grow up there.
And then we kind of heard that Vegas might be interested in doing a three-way deal.
From what it sounded like, not much really kind of happened going forward process-wise with trying to work the three teams.
But that was kind of when we started really talking and saying, well, it sounds like Vegas got interest in us.
We have interest in them.
That's kind of when we started sitting there in a while trying to think of it in a way, but not overthink it, I guess.
You know, at that time, I was still very committed to playing Toronto hockey.
You know, I wanted to focus on just being there and finishing a job there.
So I'd say really when kind of the season ended after the next two or three weeks,
I sat down with my whole family, our agent,
and went through kind of the discussions of what stuff could look like,
how we can figure this out.
And luckily enough, you know, Vegas came with, you know, the deal on Friday.
And like I said, we talked about that.
This was our first destination we would like to go to.
And, yeah, it worked out very well.
leave it there so you know i think people have taken this and i understand why to say he wasn't
fully committed to playing here and i think we know that beyond last season that was the case
he was not committed to playing here but i think guys and we know this he knew and his people knew
that vegas was interested going back to last summer when toronto did entertain uh and i i said
it last year i think they're going to trade them and toronto and vegas did talk and toronto wanted
shea theodore and vegas said go fly kite and then at the trade deadline you have a three-way deal
after the carolina deals turned down where uh toronto would have got i think ranton and then
vegas would have got uh whatever vegas marner but vegas did not have the assets at that time now
what i would love to know is what assets toronto or or carolina needed to for that deal to go
forward the carolina side yeah it was the carolina see what they got back in the dallas trade like
there's nothing vegas can offer that equal that's that equals that logan stankovin and two first
exactly so it's a shame that that never came together for toronto because toronto just needed
ranting and nothing yeah yeah so so here's the thing i don't think that you can look at mitch's
play last year and there were really heroic moments i specifically think about november
when matthews was out he was unbelievable i mean isn't that the story um but hold on uh 75 assists
alone 104 points or whatever it is i think that he was not committed beyond that season i think
it's unfair to say that he wasn't committed during but i also think it's fair to say you
can be committed to something and your heart is not in it i think is that fair i think if you
if you know your time at a job is coming to an end even if you think you're giving your hardest
i don't think that that distraction was good for mitch and i don't think it helped this play no
and distractions kill this guy i think in november yeah it's cool but come may april you know if one
day god forbid the Leafs are playing in June like and then they're not so Mitch never had to face
that but like him knowing that I'm leaving this team I don't think that helped you're not beating
Marsh and when you're thinking about that sort of thing and that that flirtation started last
summer he knew about playing with a clear mind and he wasn't the uh uh Kachuk you're beating one of
them I guess you're not beating Matthew you're not beating Bennett and Barkov and stop stop like
listen again i i think but is that there's the player in the man yeah the man was making all
the right decisions by his family like i i keep hearing him talk about you know the thought
process and i'm like that's just a responsible man good husband good you know future father now
father and you know but i do hear that and i'm sorry it does take a couple percentage points
off yeah again i'm not giving your best but your heart's not in it it's different from i'm inspired
and want to do my best i'm not under the belief that like these athletes are robots they're not
everything that goes into their life it can manifest itself on the on ice performance and
mitch marner a person we know who can't handle these things having that in the back of his mind
i'm docking a few points off of his play because he was one foot out the door with the toronto
maple and can i tell you what frustrates me the most about this because i agree with both of you
completely, is that I don't think you couldn't see this coming. And I think this dates back to
midway through 23, 24. And Jonas Siegel even wrote about it in his article. Anthony Petrelli has
referenced it. So many people have said, listen, we started to see and feel and know. And if you
go back and you watch those press conferences, my favorite saying ever is the truth has a ring to
it you can tell when somebody is into something when they're honestly giving it whatever and you
could tell when somebody's over it and dating back to Brad's first season with like Bertuzzi
and Domi and Keefe's last year whatever you could tell he was over this yeah he was over it and it
doesn't really matter why at that at that point what matters is what are you going to do about it
And the Leafs choose and continue to choose to do nothing.
Dubas' legacy here is poor, frankly.
He was going to trade this player.
He was going to trade him.
He was going to trade this player within...
A week, probably.
At least 45 days, you know.
Before July 1st.
Before July 1st.
It might have changed his whole trajectory.
No move, Klaus kicks it.
We'll never know.
And that could have been one for one for Rantanen.
Seeing how that whole thing played out.
Like, that could have been on the table.
Although, dubiously, we'd have been like, yeah, I'll get several picks.
I'll trade them all down.
And we said it for how many years?
Two.
Well, longer than that, I guess.
Yeah.
And we got so much shit for it.
And here we are.
And they got Nick Waugh.
Who I like.
Yes.
I like Nick Waugh.
But also, fuck my life.
Yeah, yeah.
Like, are you kidding?
Yeah.
are you this guy spent nine years here every the only person who didn't see this coming was the guy
in charge and now we all got to pay for it cool and he's stoked thanks brennan uh and he's got so
much money it doesn't matter if he works again exactly part of that from fucking the union uh
yeah true that's actually true too that's the story uh so this is the this is the part for me
that that and I want to just dwell on this for a second guys because I think it's really important
you know with Brad I have seen Brad for a living do things this offseason that normal teams do and
you have to forgive us if you're a fan because our teams never did that it feels like they're
in the real Alex Alex Browns come from from Maple Leaf hot stove wrote when we talk he did sort of
a retrospective piece which is probably a much smaller version of the gigantic documentary piece
you're releasing here in the next few days.
And what he said was there was no basis
for Chani and Dubas to pay Mitch Marner what they paid him,
but they buckled because they didn't want the hassle.
And that, to me, spoke volumes,
and I think it was such a great way of putting it together,
spoke volumes about where the Leafs were.
Just, listen, we've done all the hard work.
Don't take this away from us.
Don't make me do more hard stuff.
I only get paid $7 million, and in Kyle's case, I think it was a couple million at the time.
Shani was making $7 million.
So almost $10 million combined in that room between those two gentlemen.
Please don't make me do hard stuff like negotiate a contract and use my leverage the way that Brad did with Matthew Nyes, with John Tavares, with Steven Lorenz.
I know he's a smaller contract, but it doesn't seem to matter.
It's like, oh, you want to be in Toronto?
Michael Pozzetta, you're going to have to take League men.
you want to be in toronto matthew knives you're not going to make 10 million bucks
and and i that is a normal functioning team what i don't understand and what will always bother me
about this era wasted steve to quote your your brand is why that was allowed to be okay and
it's not like we were against it the whole time so what i remember the numbers were coming out
for mitch in 2019 and they were for that cap astronomical 13 and a half million from trans
or 14 million from columbus something like that i think it was 12 yeah go ahead go ahead sign that
deal when mcdavid was making i think it just signed 12 and a half and we were like holy shit
yeah right yeah i'm sorry dry saddle's making eight so the the deal was signed and the
justification so it's 10.893 i'll never forget the number 10.893 it includes his jersey number
from junior i don't know if they rounded down from 10.9 it ended up going up to 10.904 for
some reason there was some weird cap adjustment but when he signed it it was 10.893 and everyone's
laughing at the Leafs going holy shit that is so much money this guy should be making like nine
and there were a bunch of restricted free agents who hadn't signed their contract yet
the biggest one and the most direct comparison was Mikko Rantanen so when Marner signed September
19th 2019 65.358 million because he had to get his junior number in there everyone's laughing
because that's so much money and for as long as it took between Marner's deal on September 19th
and September 28th I was saying wait till Rantanen's comes out wait till Rantanen's comes
out if it's as much as Marner's or close to it you're gonna be sorry and Rantanen signs for
six years just like mitch did but it's 55.5 million dollars it's almost 10 million fewer
dollars and the cap hit is 9.25 instead of nearly 10.9 it's a huge difference and made a huge
difference let's be honest what was the huge difference in in mitch marner and miko ranton's
careers so far both of them have killer regular season numbers you might even give the edge to
Mitch Rantanen has had higher scoring seasons but Marner's I think he's just maybe more consistent
maybe I don't know I haven't looked at direct at the numbers but yeah Rantanen just mops him in
the playoffs mops him even this year where like people are like oh he was disappointing like
I mean he carried down I Miko Rantanen was disappointing this year like in the body he
carried them in the series against the Oilers but if you look at the points I would I would love to
know the points he had in the series against the Oilers and then you put it up against Marner it's
like that's just his like playoff average yeah this is in the Marner era wasted video
he had nine points Brendan had three points against the Oilers this year or you want to go
back no no this year this year yeah three points Marner had nine points in a seven game playoff
series once that was against boston wasn't it it was i was i mean you could that's half of the
series i was at the game where he like blocked the puck off his face that was 2019 that was crazy
2019 they won um that game uh and they were up after game one they were up after game three they
were up after game five they were up after the third period of game seven or no no no 2019 was
one of the worst ones they lost that one five one they had an opportunity to win in toronto they
had an opportunity to win in boston they lost 2018 is when he had nine points in seven games
wow that's the peak that's the peak it's a shame branson and by the way in the other series against
the oilers when he was on the avalanche in the 22 season when they won the cup a goal every single
game in that sweep oh so he's a mckinnon merchant he went four for four in goals in that four game
series yeah and nothing without nate dog though are you yeah no like mitch is not the only
disappointing no but this happens to be about mitch marner leaving so yes yes it does but also
he's the most disappointing and that is valid yeah um i'm trying to here it is this is producer
drew rage baiting but with he's never done that before no never never done that in games five
six and seven that's 2019 to 2025 kneelander 20 games played eight goals eight assists that's
pretty good you could still argue it's disappointing for willie but it is far and away the best
because austin matthews well actually no you can argue he's the best because in 18 games
eight goals four assists so better goal rate not quite as much with the points and assists
tavara 17 games played five goals five assists it's not worth 11 million bucks marner zero goals
7 assists
in 20 games
5, 6, and 7 and the timing
matters too
because he
his camp
so much of that video
has nothing to do with Mitch
it's about his goofball camp
of goofballs that he's in charge of
that he's in charge of he's an adult man
who pays them to speak
for him and that is a big crux
of the video as well
they're his employees
they put the fan base through that nightmare of a negotiation and he signs his deal
it was three years before he scored his first playoff goal under that deal three he didn't
score in the 2020 series he didn't score in the 2021 series very notably he didn't score until
2022 against
Tampa like
the feelings about this player
didn't fall out of
the sky and I wish people would stop
yes if there was
any success on the ice from
the personal standpoint of Mitch
or from a team perspective
the narrative is completely different yeah yes
also we're not like
yeah let's
shit on the hometown kid we'd
sure we'd sure like the Leafs to lose
like although I have to say there
the the parasocial relationships that are occurring after this breakup and that like
he doesn't know you he doesn't know you he doesn't know you and you don't know him just
you're you're weird stop uh and wait you get there you cheered for him yeah you wanted a
picture you wanted an autograph okay you're part of the reason he's not here anymore that's
what you cared about this team and he doesn't like he didn't like the criticism he didn't like
the praise he didn't like the attention in any form that it came that's funny he didn't like
the camera stuff he didn't like the microphone stuff yep he had his agent be the villain for
him and when people saw through that veneer it was over he's gonna have a great time in vegas
oh yeah yeah yeah now i i'm not totally certain because a lot of people say well he's gonna hit
a new gear i'm not 100 certain he'll hit a new gear in the regular season i don't think that
was ever the problem what i will be watching for is what the playoffs look like is and and and
people will instantly because fans do this once they go well if he if he's successful it was a
toronto problem no and i think that we will admit i can admit to this point it certainly was a
toronto mix problem as in yeah there there was a problem and it didn't work um i only know one
language and i scream it at the top of my lungs and i've been saying this since at least 2021
Holy fuck
Oh my
What
Look at those
You're showing off the tattoo
Look at the cunt
Oh
I had a gun show
Look at the line on my arm
Everybody who's listening on audio
You just missed
The greatest bicep show
The gun show
Of all time
Listen
You gotta be in shape
To get this hangry
What are the roids like these
Or you just die
Yeah
Liver King
Steve Dangle
I would love
To be
Jesse
I'm not a weird shade
of brownie pink i'm not on what you don't want to be the shade of liver that means you're unhealthy
i'm like man you are orange do you take the hgh in your butt and pink yeah where else do you take
it yeah it's a repository though oh yeah it's an hgh uh that's how i drank my booze did rogan
get you on that yeah that and psilocybin and uh right wing extremism um so anyway where was i
going well i think it's it's it's not just about mitch and i said it before i will say it again
when mitch marner's no move clause it like the leaves had four years of runway
after signing that contract it didn't work out after signing that contract
they had four years of runway before the no move clause kicked in
brandon shanahan actively chose to let it kick in and
as soon as they let that happen
I came on the show and I was like
alright well Willie's gone and everyone's like
well that's crazy
he signs his contract I'm like okay so you're
just married to these guys
until either you lose
forever or one of them takes
the decision out of your hands and leaves
Mitch did that we should all honestly
be thanking him
I think the point you made there Adam
about him taking it to the next level
like there's not a next level to
go to when you're already a hundred point player and we think of you as like top four players in
on on amongst wingers in the league yeah yeah he makes 12 million dollars he's already one of the
best players in the league if he there's no next level to go to if he's just a hundred point player
again these mitch martin he's very good but yeah that playoff thing that's what i'm most fascinated
to see like does jack eichel get something out of him in the mix there in vegas that you couldn't
get in toronto with that man i can't wait for jack eichel who doesn't shoot and mitch martyr
who doesn't shoot to not shoot together it's gonna be even mccrimmon said it in the press
conference he said one of them is gonna have to learn to shoot jack eichel overpasses all the
time i think he does okay though well he does okay but he's that's the point is that like he
could be doing a lot better if he shot mitch also don't put him on the same line well i've been
saying that you could also do that now the last so so you know it's key to that last answer that
you know mitch said around you know the end of 2023 things started to get funky right started
to get weird the next one at 106 41 jesse um i i will we'll kind of finish it uh because this
mentions the trade rumors last summer um and i guess the question really starts with the guy
saying like um you know can you believe that you know there when you came into this league there
you know vegas was brand new whatever could you have ever seen yourself here blah blah blah mitch
goes a lot further than the question goes so we'll just let him answer it do you ever imagine
that you would actually be playing for this team in las vegas um i mean i think my whole mindset
the whole time i was in toronto was it was really tough to leave toronto to be honest i didn't
ever think it maybe come to that day um you know when vegas first came to the league i think it
was a shock like everyone thought it's going to be a team that is going to be competitive but a
lot of teams are going to come in here and maybe do some stupid stuff the night before hockey games
I think that's what everyone's thought was and some thoughts.
We all thought that, yes.
And then kind of just realized quickly there that as soon as this team was made
that they were guys that were willing to work and battle.
And, you know, it didn't matter the names on the team.
They were just there to do their job.
And they ended up winning a lot of hockey games.
And then, you know, with Kelly and Bill and, you know, McRae.
McPhee, sorry.
Thank you.
I'm still new.
Let me try to get – I'm still trying to get – I'm trying to get –
What did he call him?
He called him McRae.
I'll give him a pass there.
There's a guy named McRae who worked for the London Knights.
Probably when he would have been there.
Also, he's nervous and he's in front of him.
Yeah, yeah.
I just didn't really get it clear on the mix-up there.
I was just curious.
Everyone's names out, but, you know,
they started just really making a winning atmosphere here
and, you know, really pushing, you know,
just keep making this team better every single year.
And, you know, last year in Toronto or two years ago, really kind of, you know, stuff, you know, we didn't win, obviously.
We didn't do what we wanted to do.
Stuff started kind of going, you know, a little north, a little south.
We didn't know what was going to happen.
A lot of trade rumors all last summer.
Didn't know what was going to happen in that regard either.
And, you know, as soon as the year started up, you know, we were ready to commit and play hockey and, you know, see what would happen.
But, you know, at the same time, we're willing to take it to the distance and, you know, kind of told Toronto that that was our plan.
And, you know, I was so grateful to play there for nine years.
I said at my end of the year interview there that I took a risky pick on a small kid from Toronto that, you know,
was forever grateful to be able to wear a Maple Leaf jersey and forever to be able to play in front of, you know,
some of the greats that ever wore that jersey.
um but um you know just now it's being a family man a father um you know we thought our time was
you know ready to look somewhere else and find a new home and find a new place to to grow our
family and um like i said i'm so grateful to be here and so uh so happy to be a part of this team
so i i don't believe that bullshit for one second uh about um risky pick no they no your dad said
you should have gone first well that that is a yeah no no his dad didn't say that either his dad
didn't say that his dad said if connor wasn't there he would have gone first he should have
been in consideration for first overall yes oh yeah well now you're with number two and you can
did take a risky pick because if you remember at the time babs and uh mark hunter got into it on
the draft floor because babs was like i don't want us drafting little boys i want noah hannifin
Yeah, we're not drafting children, I believe is the phrase I heard.
There you go.
So, you know, and so that was a risk.
And, I mean, it's a risk at that high.
You're still going to get a good player.
I don't think he was saying it wouldn't work out.
To Steve's point, it's also a good line.
It's a good line to say in the media.
The Leafs took a chance on this little boy.
Oh, a lot of PR is bullshit.
He did say, by the way, in there, as I referenced before,
that this has been going squirrely for two years.
Two years.
I was shocked to hear him say it.
By the way, we could feel it.
Now, I was excited.
I hope Shanahan has a real comfortable cottage with a long dock.
He does.
And never darken our doorstep again.
He probably has three or four cottages with the money he made, dude.
Like, what a stubborn, stubborn, ridiculous mistake he made that who knows what damage it did to your favorite hockey team.
The two years thing, that to me screams just the Kyle Dubas timeline.
Two years would be when Kyle Dubas was fired.
He was going to move Mitch Marner.
I think that's confirmation that it was going to happen.
Or Willie.
Or Willie.
One of them.
Somebody.
I think it would have been more likely Marner.
That Florida loss, I think he's telling everybody,
that's where everything was actually going to happen.
And then all those rumors come out and they're going to trade him.
They can foul Caldubus.
He doesn't do it.
But since that moment, he knew that he probably didn't have long for Toronto.
And they should have known that as well.
Well, and this is where you hear things through the grapevine that are anecdotal
that I'm not going to repeat that aren't like world moving
or like that would shock you beyond.
But there was a mentality at the top with the Leafs
where I just think it's a misunderstanding
of how human beings operate.
And I think part of the reason
that hockey players are different
is because they're in a different world
than the rest of us.
And you can have,
when you have a president that's a former hockey player,
that can be a real benefit
because it is a different world.
You grow up in a different world.
Your high school experience is a different one
than most normal people.
However, that also makes you ill-equipped
to deal with real-world things in certain situations.
And some of the stuff that I would hear
about the philosophies of when players were going to mature
and why and for what reasons,
they never materialized.
And, you know, it frustrates me when I see things,
and I think it frustrates everybody
when we see things like, oh, the Leafs never...
And this was in the Toronto Star.
Again, this was a Kipper article.
The Leafs never valued Mitch Marner.
I think they did.
i think that they treated treated him and the rest of these guys pretty well at least paid
him almost 70 million dollars they paid him 70 million bucks i mean i don't know i don't know
like what else do you need and sometimes what would you do sometimes the job's thankless but
that's what the money's for you know what i mean like it i and and you know and here's where we
take it out of the what's here maddie go to steve for a sec go to him look at him we take him out
of this and i go to matthew nise's press conference which i did not clip out maybe i should have
i go to you know and and lesser extent pesetta lorenz uh john tavaris's press conference which
i watched as well and here are guys who and jesse said it earlier are dying to be here
dying to be in the spotlight dying to win this team a cup and i know none of them are mitch
Marner believe me I'm not freaking stupid thank you comment section in advance but what I what I
what I think this needs to be and I think Keith Pelley touched on it and I hope he follows through
on it which is there's plenty of guys that don't want to be here like Nick Ehlers doesn't want to
be here and I don't think the Leafs I'm sure the Leafs would be interested in Nick Ehlers but I
think he wants to go to a quieter market great he wants to have his cake and eat it too and the NHL
provides a unique opportunity to have that happen but my point is if he doesn't want to be here then
he shouldn't be here it doesn't matter how much you pay him you you got to identify sometimes
with a 26 27 year old a guy that is not the right fit who's an unbelievable talent
not the right fit for the city and i think that you know all these people getting grabbing all
the likes on Twitter right now going, I just don't see how the Leafs are better. And if you think
differently, you're stupid. Nobody is saying they're better today. Nobody is saying Matthias
Micheli is going to come in and replace Mitch Marner. Nobody's saying Max Domi and Austin
Matthews are going to combine for 200 points in a season. Nobody is saying that. But I will say
that I'm interested and excited
to see something different.
And teams, when you de-emphasize
some of the core, right?
Ryan O'Reilly said it.
Brad Treliving said it.
How many other people need to say it
before we realize,
hey, yeah, like this team
wasn't constructed properly.
You can't convince me the team is better.
On paper, I 100% agree with you.
I'm just saying it might've been time anyway.
Let's talk about end results.
2017, what happened?
Out in six.
2018 what happened uh out in seven 2019 what happened out in seven 2020 what happened out in
five 2021 what happened out in seven 2022 what happened out in seven 2023 what happened won the
first round out in five in the second great 2024 what happened uh out in seven 2025 what happened
uh won the first round out in seven in the second both parties should want a divorce
but mitch will thrive because it wasn't fucking working here the leaves
might i don't know they might they might but this has been purgatory yes purgatory there's a reason
i had such a negative attitude when the off season would come around every year i'm like well
Guess we're going to do this fucking shit again
And then what happened
The same fucking shit
Happened again
And we said they would
Can I have a suggestion for you
Decaf
What if you
What if you made a video where you
Tried to do the Leafs roster for next season
With no changes
No no Leafs roster next year with Mitch Marner on it
And then I'm sure people will totally
understand what you're going for it'll be a positive video uh like all right so here's what
we got nice matthews marner we got uh friggin willie jt fuckstick mcgillicuddy we got like
that that's what the roster would be every year
oh my god we got joseph pickleball bobby mcmahon
rooster mcqueen and like oh but tyler patuzzi and that's how and he played the role
of fuckstick mcgillicuddy for one year that's that's those guys and like guys for god's sake
how many times
this year has been the first
like this has been the first off season where I'm like
huh
new something
else might happen yeah
they couldn't keep doing
this I couldn't
Leafs Nation I don't understand
why anyone would want this
Sisyphus and Tantalus
existence where you're pushing the
rock up the mountain and it falls down
where you see food and water
and you crawl to it and it vanishes to you can't satiate your hunger or quench your thirst
it looks it it looks like it's there we were close game seven we got the cup champs the games
and you turn around and all of a sudden it's september 1st and we're pushing that rock back
up the hill again yeah but it's okay though adam i know this apple just vanished but there's another
one right there so i'm gonna crawl to wow we've done this for over half a decade are you kidding
mitch is finally doing something different i wish he wanted something different sooner
i think he did i just don't think he took why the fuck is he still here
now he's gone the leafs finally wanted something different mitch might succeed greatly from all of
this the Leafs might succeed greatly from all of this like I get like people are again they use
the truth to lie when it comes to Nazem Kadri Nazem Kadri fucked up two playoff runs for the
Leafs in a row fucked them up ruin them yes they had a chance to do something in 2018 he fucked it
up 2019 they had a chance to do something he fucked that up too went to Colorado what did he
you fucked up it up yeah and then he ended up winning that trade was horrible it sucked it
sucked immediately also but imagine they'd made a good one they couldn't Dubas would have got
fired a lot earlier hey maybe it would have been good he would have got fired a lot earlier if
Kadri had come back and brained Justin Falk in a Leaf uniform and got suspended like he did in
colorado they couldn't run that back there was you ruined you single-handedly ruined well maybe
not single-handedly you had some help but you were a big factor in ruining two years of hard work
thrown in the fire because you couldn't hold your temper you had to make that trade the trade
sucked but it was the most Kyle Dubas trade making that trade was the greatest chance for the Leafs
to have success and for Kadri to have success Kadri got that success and took zero lessons
from it unfortunately anyone who called me a liability can kiss my ass avalanche fans the
year before you mean like oh it's extremely frustrating but that is an example of a divorce
that needed to happen and the Leafs came up on the short end of the stick hope that doesn't
happen with Mitch but one thing I know could not happen is this continuing yep can I say this about
the other side give it to us I'm taking Edmonton in a seven game series against the Vegas Golden
that's currently constructed i am too all right i think anybody had a anybody watched that series
dude i don't think mitch marner in that series wins it i think they're not a mitch marner away
yeah against the oil i think they need i think they need more changes well they're also down
alex petrangelo and i think there's a lot of people talking out of both sides of their mouth
like oh i guess there's a wagon and uh alex petrangelo is going to be in the hockey hall of
fame so sorry they're losing a tail end of prime hockey hall of famer yeah who won you a cup three
years ago on the right side oh yeah those grow on trees i really liked vegas going into that series
and they disappointed me on the ice and i think i i gotta rethink what i think about vegas and
those pieces there because they are older you know it's not the same team that won the cup and
i'm also curious who's gonna finish for them yeah a lot of playmaking i know like dora fayev and
that's sort of it's great but like fayev i you gotta can't just be him i think you have to put
mitch with carlson i do yeah yeah which by the way i love because carlson's a finisher yeah
that's a good line i just don't think it's better than leon and connor and everything they got going
on in edmonton and that's the bar right and if you're in the western conference it's like can
we beat edmonton and i don't think they're quite there yet like there's a whole off season to play
Who knows what they come up with from now until September, but we'll see.
Pacific division teams.
Let me, let me give you three words of advice for check for check for check.
Yeah.
Rumble.
It's going to be,

till the playoffs.

Now listen, as we head into summer, it's a good time to reset.
and rethink our priorities because fall for me as i always say is like the start of the new year
that for me is the start and so you want to kind of calendar disagrees with i know the calendar
disagrees but that's how i look at my year because that's when hockey starts and we come back full
time whatever and so maybe this summer you have a second opinion on your life well you know what i
get bad every year the september scaries do you get that for like just because they're going back
to school and stuff like that a hundred percent the september no no well it's not for school
Although I'm sure I did used to get it, but for the hockey season, really September scary.
Do you feel like you just can't do LFR anymore?
You're just not good enough.
Well, what if I forgot?
What if you forgot?
What if I forgot and everyone hates me?
That's possible.
Hey, you never talked to a therapist about that.
A hundred percent.
Better help helps you with that.
And with the great thing of it's better help is that it works within your schedule and
you're, you're probably going to be on vacation this summer.
You're probably going to be working weird hours and I'm off this day and I'm not on
this day, whatever.
The great thing is wherever, whatever country you're in, you can get an internet connection.
you can do therapy and you can also do it via phone or just even via text, like just
typing that sort of thing. And there's also therapists for just about every sort of specialty
that you need because not everybody just needs like generalized therapy. Maybe you need something
a little bit more specific. BetterHelp can help you. That's why it's called BetterHelp.
BetterHelp.com slash STP today. We want you to get 10% off your first month and give therapy
a shot. That's BetterHelp.com slash STP.
uh so you know what let's we'll move on from that uh a couple of things mason mctavish
his name is out there that first topic took an hour and 20 minutes well i mean it is the end
of the mitch marner era yeah no i'm just i'm just not criticizing can i wrap it up making it i just
got a text from producer drew uh-huh mitch marner and era wasted 47 minutes there you go uh so mason
mctavish uh uh could be out there because obviously granlin just signed with the ducks
and Carlson as their first center,
you probably don't want Mason McTavish.
As a trade?
Well, you probably don't want him as a third-line center.
Wait, the Ducks are trading?
Well, because he...
So, here's the thing.
I don't think he's signed.
Who's signed?
Yeah, he's an RFN.
Yeah, so I wonder...
First off, it could be an offer sheet candidate.
It could be a trade candidate.
They're four mil under the cap.
Just keep the fucking guy.
Who's cap is the cap for?
St. Louis is, actually.
A lot of people in St. Louis are talking about it.
but it is an interesting name to just see out there.
I'm just bringing it up.
We brought up Luke Kuhn,
and I think Mason McTavish is far more interesting.
Yeah, but it doesn't make sense
for the Ducks to move off of that player.
They have so many guys.
People.
Yeah, they have so many guys who can play center, too.
They still have Braden Shen.
Dylan Holloway can play center.
You just got Pew Suter.
I'm sure I'm leaving guys.
Oh, my God, Robert Thomas.
I think that I'm curious about the relationship
between mctavish and the ducks though because greg cronin like was like well i don't know if
he's a top six guy and then like backtracked it the next day greg cronin should never have been
the coach there that was um but like bad choice you know you do wonder like okay i mean this is
a great hockey player who's only got upside i do wonder about that relationship between the two i
think that is interesting uh we're apparently going to hear about nikolai ehlers later today
we keep waiting and we keep hearing it hinted at but it has not happened every insider yesterday
it was like today's the day healer signs stay tuned and then the whole day went by and then
today everyone's like today's the day what if they just don't know yeah um i do want to say
that pew suitor signing in st louis when vancouver could have just kept them for four million over
two it's a pretty reasonable deal it's a super reasonable deal and you got you like what i like
about suitor is you can play him on the wing but he's the center vancouver didn't have the cast
yeah but they would have if they hadn't traded for kane i think they value kane over suitor
and i don't all right hate them for that they needed they need they need size what what kane
brings yeah i think they could have also used suitor i think he's a little too expensive for
them yeah right you're you're a frequent philippe edel injury away from teddy bluger's your second
line center and that's a problem bless teddy bluger yeah if they had if there was a dakota
joshua move out there earlier in free agency or leading out of the draft you know and you move
off of that contract then i'm like yeah bring back suitor but they didn't do that move and i
think maybe they should have if yeah if there's criticism there like there's contracts you could
have moved out and that one in particular to bring back suitor i need eelers to sign because
Because forget the Ealers news, I wonder if that's what's holding up the trade market.
Because I think there's some real fidgety teams.
We know the Leafs aren't taking any more big swings in free agency.
Who's even out there to take a big swing?
There's not a human out there to big swing.
They have a full decor also.
They have a goaltending tandem.
They have most of their offense.
If you want to upgrade the forward group in a meaningful way, it has to be through trade.
It's interesting.
It's going to be real interesting.
I like the Mangiapane signing for Edmonton, by the way.
Me too.
Very good.
I think it's a great signing.
That's a very reasonable deal.
I think that guy is prime for 20 goals next year.
As long as his shoulder's okay, he's like a career 15% shooter.
And his shots went from 185 a year two years ago to 90 last year.
so the the Skinner bet and the Arvidsson bet I like the Mangiapane one a lot more
and it's for a similar price yeah um yeah he scored 35 I don't know if he's going to do that
again but he I just feel like he has more depth to his game than those two players at this stage
in their career and he's a good power play two option yeah and you know how I looked at that
deal I looked at it as you swapped Arvidsson for Mangiapane plus you get 400k and a fifth
around draft pick like because arvidsson made four million dollars they traded him to boston
and got a fifth in return that's a really good they use that four million dollars that they got
from dumping arvidsson to sign manji apani for 3.6 million so you get 400k back plus a better
player in my eyes i'd rather have manji apani right now than arvidsson because he i think he
fits in better with the oilers plus you got a free fifth yeah what a what a spectacular couple
move it's considering this was like a thing that you needed to have happened that's a pretty good
outcome well done yeah i like that i like that a lot uh last thing here i just want to make sure i
got we got through everything uh no no we did get through everything that's great you know what what
about the sharks you got the sharks oh yeah nick letty uh has been claimed off of waivers and they
also signed dimitri orlov who was awful in the playoffs but don't worry probably not going to
be an issue for them this year they do need veteran help and what the only thing i resent
the sharks for is helping out doug armstrong but they need guys no they did it are they
have reached the cap floor
they are two million dollars above the floor wow
wow they actually are not last place in the nhl in cap space because the ducks are still below
that's crazy i think four mil below the floor what is the floor uh 70.6 they are at 66.5
there you go yeah wow holy shit yeah but they do have a lot of contracts to sign yeah yeah but
yeah the sharks did it yeah the future steel all right what i'm trying to find ah so the sharks do
have three all three of their um uh salary retention spots are used up okay so what i was
going to say is watch at the deadline they're going to retain on or love and get at least a
first no they only have two retain spots they have three buyouts vlasic jones martin they have
three buyouts to retain oh i thought the buyouts counted towards the retention no they have five
players on the books you aren't what playing for them right now vlasic jones um can you give me
this name uh nikolai nijov nijov uh eric carlson and thomas hurdle all they're paying them and uh
they are not playing for the Sharks.
Hurdle, they were paying for a long time.
I have to be honest.
How did they get the retention on Hurdle?
Freaking Vegas, man.
I know.
He's such a good player.
Like, how did that happen?
Wasn't that in the...
Trade deadline a year and a half ago.
No, the Devils, right?
Oh, no, I think Timo Meier.
Yeah, yeah.
Thomas Hurdle, yeah.
They've traded a lot of guys.
It's okay.
There's so many guys that have gone out.
But to me, Orlov is either a defenseman for you this year,
and then you trade him next.
or he's just a defenseman for you for two years and that's whatever nah that's that's not how the
sharks operate we're we're we're leaving with something you think so yeah one guy i think is
primed to get moved to deadline this year is lilligren because his his role there like they
tried him a whole bunch of spots and he's exactly what we thought he was uh the analytics people are
gonna hate us for this and that's fine i'll own that uh he's a puck moving need to shelter the
shit out of them defensemen and i think on a third pairing for a playoff team that's a perfect guy
so the stars at the stars the sharks have five ufa defensemen on their roster steven adam how
many of those five players make it past the trade deadline can i see who they are it's on the screen
right now oh my bad there's so many of them i thought it was the forward letty clingberg ferraro
lilligren and vinnie day arne vinnie and timothy you are gone ferraro i think is a guy they want
to hang on to I think they keep Ferraro yeah Klingberg we'll see how he plays honestly gone
um and Letty we'll see so what's your number Klingberg has a here's where I want to go clause
uh three of five you think three of five are gone gone I think four of five four of five we'll find
out this this yeah no I'm excited like maybe we won't remember at all but if we'll come back to
this next trade one of our listeners will hopefully someone probably on the discord
will remember this next year
in February or March
whenever it is Jimmy Beans
and Buster Scruggs
on D
who's going to play
yeah
Tom Tompkins and but that's
a lot of trade capital it sure
is by the way use some of it to get good
their defense is more expensive than I thought almost
25 million bucks that's crazy
like yeah Jack Thompson
is going to be in there basically
every Barracuda that we saw
Yeah, 100%.
Hey, so just so you guys know, before we get to Renato Foss,
Defender of the Year from the Toronto Scepters,
I just want to mention that we will be going down to two episodes a week starting now.
So Tuesdays and Thursdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays until the end of July.
VIP episodes all the way throughout the summer.
And we'll have one VIP episode coming out tomorrow morning.
And as you know, there's VIP, which you can just subscribe to on YouTube.

All right, so we're so excited to welcome on Renata Foss from the Toronto Scepters,
who is, we should have saved our applause, Defenseman of the Year.
Now we applaud.
Adam, Defender.
Defender.
Defender of the Year.
Sorry, excuse me.
I apologize.
That's just bad habit.
I apologize.
I know.
A bad person.
Totally fine.
Bad person.
So, Renata, welcome.
And we've got to get you a little closer to the mic because these are really sensitive
mics.
I should have warned you beforehand.
so first off I I think the thing is you know hockey is such a team game and I know you're
gonna make it about the team but that had to feel pretty freaking good right I mean yeah it was
pretty special you know as hockey players we always bring it back to the team but it was a
good year um I felt like personally I took some strides which I was happy with I went in with
some goals to try to be more offensive and I showed up on the score sheet more which was great
and um but I think I still kept it safe on the defensive side of the game so I was happy with
my own individual year and um yeah obviously obviously the the girls were a huge part of that
as well I don't think you're like known for your toughness but you led the league in hits I did
right it's 63 hits you led the league yeah what is that like going out there and throwing the
body like is that important part of your game it's so fun yeah it's like my one of my favorite
things that the pw has done to the women's game is allowed for us to have a little bit more
body contact i like that we don't line people up open ice and hit that way but i think like we
should have the green light along the boards if you take a good angle to to hit a player and rub
them out um so yeah i love it it's my favorite part how'd you how'd you figure out you were good
at it well i think i i played the line a little bit before we were allowed to do it so i was in
the penalty box a lot before not to say i still was this year but um yeah i think i just always
played with a physical edge and then this just opened the floodgates a little bit awesome so
so i gotta ask because uh you know being a defenseman being kind of rugged and that sort
of thing you're gonna get people who are are pissed about that uh so who is the best chirper
in the league like who's got the best lines who's got the the one that you're like man i know they
might embarrass me tonight with a line that they have or something like that is there somebody out
there who's got really good a little bit good on ice banner yeah there's definitely people but i
want to say like my own teammate emma maltese is probably really because she seems so nice
sometimes in between periods she'll tell me some of her like chirps that she says to people and i'm
like emma like how do you pre-plan this she's like workshopping material with you i'm like this is
crazy but i would say actually a sneaky one rebecca leslie she chirps out there on ottawa charge and
she used to be our teammate like so she can sure that helps though i think sometimes when you know
somebody yeah they have some dirt on everyone there's a couple player players on the charge
there that kind of toe the line with a lot of things yeah not to get into specifics but
yeah a couple big hits they laid uh in the playoffs there that weren't they weren't the
greatest yeah yeah so like this is i mean this is a big year for the pwhl i mean it seems like
every year is a big year for the pwhl but now you're two seasons in season three is going to
have uh two new teams and uh you know the expansion was aggressive like in terms of players that were
taken and i think specifically for for us in toronto sarah nurse seeing her leave sucks right
she's not only she's a great player but she's a fantastic ambassador for the sport and so i guess
from your perspective uh how hard is it to see a player like that kind of leave in that fashion
Cause you know, I've never got the chance to talk to any player about expansion.
It's sort of like, well, we're just going to take you cause we can't.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's been a crazy couple of weeks, honestly, in the PWHL, just between the expansion draft
and then, um, the entry draft and everything, there's just been so much player movement,
but I would say like a player like Sarah nurse, when you think of Toronto scepters for a lot
of people, that's who they think of.
So obviously that's a huge move and, um, she's a big part of our team for what she brings.
And, um, she's a huge ambassador for the sport, so it's very difficult, but I think it's also
a great opportunity for the league to have a player like that in Vancouver to start a
franchise.
So, um, obviously extremely difficult, um, for us as a team and it'll be hard to fill
that gap, but, um, yeah, it's been a crazy, crazy couple of weeks.
I'm like constantly loading my Twitter to be like, who's going where what's happening.
It's just been, it's been nuts.
Yo, me too.
imagine you have been what what what has it been like you know because we were we were talking
we know we've spoken to each other on the phone before we don't remember when it was no
and i was trying to do a little history like trying to figure out how many years ago it was
and i was like okay well if it was around here that's when the n-dub folded and if it was around
here that's when the c-dub folded and that's a how is it to have a little bit of i know we were
talking about the league being a little chaotic because of expansion and everything but you
actually have some good reasons some stability yeah for the first time for the first time yeah
it's actually been incredible like and even just to watch everyone's game grow in the last two
seasons because we've had that consistency of practicing and playing at a high level with
really good coaching and really good management um it's been more than we could have ever imagined
like you mentioned like I played in the CWHL for years and it was nothing like we experience now
and so it's just been so great to wake up every morning and and all of us all 23 players on our
roster can go to the rink and just focus on hockey before it was like okay maybe you had the national
team players that could only focus on hockey but everyone else had a million other things going on
to like make the money they needed but now we have a full team that's coming and training
professionally so it's so great and you're seeing how much the game's growing even from the pro
level like girls are coming to college and they're still developing and that's just going to continue
and the game's going to continue to get better from the grassroots all the way up you are also
nominated for mvp and like so when when i think your game it's not the hit side of things i think
about the offensive ability you 22 points in 30 games i think it was you lead all defensemen
defend defenders in in points uh in the season and that that balance of having a great offensive
game and defensive game growing up did you model your game after any players like you watched and
you idolized yeah well it's funny because I actually put forward pretty much my whole time
growing up until I was in late high school that's why you got such good offense um and I really I
didn't watch hockey growing up so like I just played it because I loved it but I would say
that Cheryl Pounder and Becky Keller were two women in the city of Burlington who did summer
camps and they were around the rinks a lot so they were two people that I looked up to but I
wouldn't say like I modeled my game after after anyone in particular because I didn't watch it
really oh but I feel like now it's changed so much like now that I'm went to university I started
watching hockey and yeah a lot of the time I'm I was modeling my game after a lot of the men like
now I look at Kale McCarr Quinn Hughes those are two players I I think of you as like Kale McCarr
yeah i love i love watching them play but i think it's incredible to think that now young girls can
watch the people hl and aspire to be like some of us in the league and play like us yeah so i mean i
didn't really have that growing up but i think there's so many options for players now to to
look at our games and model i i just have to say uh just as a total aside we were not planning on
bringing this up that you mentioning cheryl pounder i think she's a phenomenal analyst and
And like, and what, what Cheryl does so well is she's able to take something complex that
you probably would have missed and just boil it down to here's simply what happened.
And this is what led to this, which led to the thing that you actually remember happening.
And, uh, for a guy like me who has terrible short-term memory, it's great.
But also I want, I wanted to ask, you know, so you did her camps, what's she like, what's
it like to be coached by her?
Cause she seems like she's very intense, like very much detail oriented.
Passionate is the word.
Okay.
All right.
yeah well I was quite young so I just remember being like in awe I was a little bit scared for
sure I was scared of her for sure um but I think what's so cool now is that now that she's
broadcasting so often I've actually got to like shadow her on the broadcasting side of things so
it's like a full circle moment it went from like being scared of her as like an eight-year-old on
the ice that she was like the coach and like had olympic medals and now to like be in a position
where I can have conversations with her and learn what she's doing now um but yeah I was 100% scared
of her but she's incredible i think she's doing great work in a good way yeah it was the passion
and you've mentioned you've mentioned a couple of times the national team the olympics are coming up
yeah and you know that's got to be something you're preparing for and hoping to be a part of
i'm assuming uh what's an olympic year like for you what's how does that change your training
does it change your training what's your day-to-day like now versus say last year
yeah oh for sure well this is a little bit different because this is the first olympics
we've had where we've had like a true pro league happening like this so um it's a little with
hockey canada um they're going to take about like 30 girls and have like two weeks on two weeks off
starting end of august of training up until our league starts in november so um there's going to
be a lot more commitments from a hockey canada side just to like get us prepared and get us
together and then also so they can make selections so yeah like off season for me right now it was
pretty quick i took like three weeks off after season just to like relax not do a whole lot but
now i'm like right into yeah you said you crushed a big workout this morning what were you doing
this morning i was doing some hill sprints i was doing some chin-ups honestly i laid down after
the workout on the gym floor and i was like am i gonna make it to toronto today for this i'm so
tired you could have canceled on us we would have been okay with it i'm feeling great
No, the reason I made that sound is when you're, when you were like, Oh yeah,
I had a big workout this morning. I'm like, well,
I'm sure we're going to talk about it and maybe I'll get some tips.
And then you're like, uh, so I started with Steve's least favorite thing.
I'm like, okay. Yeah.
And I moved on to the thing that Steve could never do.
I can't either, by the way. I, and I, and I, you know, I looked at the,
you know, when they brought up the MVP sort of thing, Jesse,
just flash cross screen, uh, you've averaged 25 minutes a night, basically.
uh what's your recovery like what do you do after a game and the next day after 25 minutes on
average no one in the league played more minutes than you is that correct i don't know is that
what the staff say i think that's what it said come on you don't know that yeah we got a thumbs
up okay all right yeah so here's the thing about hockey players is we know you guys know your
i know you've got a connor brown story with with that too where remember his oh it's connor brown
peter hall like like so many you're all liars you all know tell the story tell the story you
all know oh because he had a really good season i was like yeah but the season before and he just
cuts me off he goes you can say it i'm like what he's like i was a minus 72 i'm like yeah you were
man yeah so anyway so conditioning yeah what's recovery like you know what do you do do you
drink a power shake is it like a salad like what do you do eat a salad no not a salad okay all right
because i don't like salads that much either you can tell um but uh yeah what is it yeah no protein
shake right away i got a refuel right away so yeah i find i just get into a pretty good routine i like
to roll out and just like socialize with the girls at the rink after and um have my protein shake and
then um yeah after that it's get into the norma tech when you get home before bed those are the
compression pants i was just about to ask about that okay great i don't sleep after games though
so if we have like a 7 p.m game i won't go to bed till like 3 a.m like i'll just be like laying
there like yeah you can't you're just too hyped up yeah yeah and and you have like a coffee at
five because you're like your pre-game coffee so i don't sleep so like i get into the norma tech
i'll yeah i'll just stretch a little bit and then i'm ready to watch documentaries having a coffee
at five documentaries yeah oh what what time do you have coffee at coffee at five maybe six okay
Well, if there's a stream, so I'm like, yeah, well, I got to do a stream.
And you're like, yeah, cool.
I got to fly around for 25 minutes against the best players in the world.
Before we started this, I mentioned that you lived my dream a couple weeks ago, and I didn't
tell you what it was, but you threw out the first pitch at the Toronto Blue Jays game.
Since I've been a little kid, I've always dreamed about throwing out the first pitch.
What was that like?
Look at that form.
i know like pointing to my target 85 straight down the middle piss missile okay so it was super
cool but i would say i was quite nervous and i like said to my husband before i'm like okay we
need to throw a ball because like i don't really remember the last time i threw a baseball so all
we had in the house was softball and i was that's got to be similar and then i felt the baseball
when i got to the field i'm like this is so much smaller yeah um but yeah it was super cool and i
thought i didn't know who i'd be throwing it to and then they were like you're gonna be throwing
to vladi and i'm like i'm throwing to vladi like that's that's pretty cool yeah so it was pretty
special um i can't even watch myself it was right on target right how did you guys decide who gets
who got to throw the actual pitch it was actually um one of our team management just asked me like
do you want to throw the pitch okay i was like i've been on the field before for it i think
spooner threw it a couple years ago when i went on the field and i was just beside her as she
through it and then um yeah this year when the team staff was like hey do you want to throw the
first pitch i was like it's my time can you bring the picture back up yeah because this is the
happiest anyone has ever looked ever like this is the coolest moment for anybody ever it's so awesome
you know are you one of those and i and i i i'm going to say this so jesse is a pretty good athlete
um you can put him into anything and he's he's gonna figure it out are you one of these annoying
athletes that's just like oh i picked it up yesterday and is the best person or you know
are you one of those i mean i'm really competitive so like yeah i try to be what's something that
you've tried like first day and then instantly we're sort of just good at because like i i noticed
it too like with athletes like water sports things like like you know if you take somebody who's
really good at hockey and you put them on water skis boom they're up uh like something that was
that was me yeah you were oh drop the ski right away how can you start on one ski um no i'm still
working on that but i barely do it yeah uh that's cool yeah okay pickleball i haven't played enough
but it's something i think i'd love i've only played a couple times but i play against my
husband and like he played hockey he's a really good athlete so he keeps me humble because when
i'm like i think i'm good and then i play him and he's like barely moving because he's like his arms
are so long and i'm like well and he's like i don't even have a sweat and i'm like well you're
so big so i'm sorry that's when you hit him right between the yeah i'm like i'm trying yeah and so
another thing on the scepter is just very quickly here um uh because you've been so generous with
your time we really appreciate you coming in um natalie spooner re-signed for a couple years
we've known natalie for a long long time love her she's always been so gracious with us can
you talk a little bit about what she brings to the team what a legend she is especially coming
back from that knee injury oh my gosh crazy escarbro right absolutely so yeah it makes sense
um no spooner is oh i've played with her for a while now because i played in the cwhl and the
furies with her but she's just such a special teammate you don't you don't get people like
her very often like she's so bubbly she's so positive um like any adversity that comes her
way like this knee injury like coming back after having rory like she's had some big battles in the
last couple years and comes to the rink every day with a smile on her face ready to work
um yeah she's she just to see her have that incredible mvp season yeah in the inaugural
year and just everything she touched was going in the net was was really really cool but um yeah
so it's great to see her sign for two years um i think a lot of teams were after her just for
the type of player she is and the leadership that she brings but um we're lucky that she's
she's staying here with us yeah yeah absolutely well bernada fast uh and also i have to mention
And you should sign up for The Beacon, which is the Scepter's newsletter.
And I was told before that you guys have a wait list for season tickets, which is incredible.
And the fact that you guys moved to a bigger arena and still have that wait list really says something.
Thank you for the effect you've had in this city, selling this team to the fans, not just playing for it.
Because, you know, I've got a little girl.
Her first game was a Scepter's game.
Not a Marley's game, not a Leafs game.
It was a Scepter's game.
And it really did.
She's not the most athletic kid.
She's afraid of everything,
but it really did kind of set her on that.
Yeah.
I think I want to try at least skating.
And,
and so having you guys there and,
you know,
seeing this grow,
this is really,
really cool.
And,
you know,
we're big Jane at Hefford fans here too.
So a long time,
you know,
we,
we,
we think the world of her.
So congratulations on all your success.
And we're looking forward to season three.
Thank you so much.
Appreciate it.
