Let's go!
First deal of the day, Ryan Reeves, Toronto Maple Leafs.
He turned down a deal with Minnesota to come here.
Now, before we get into it, remember to get in on the action with Sports Interaction.
sports interaction.com slash sdpn 19 plus please play responsibly the deal is 1.35 million dollars
over the next three years he's 36 years old and the deal was widely reported yesterday on twitter
to the um freaking out of the analytics community uh what do we think guys um listen um you know
dom decision uh put it in in great perspective like this could potentially cost the team 11 goals
um based on his model how which will well he'll be on for a bunch and he's not going to generate
any really no that's just according to his model right and that's also me dumbing it down greatly
and not doing it justice um i'm fine with that i'm actually fine with this team losing 11 goals
and i'll tell you why uh listen there is no on paper argument for bringing in ryan reeves there's
no on paper argument for it there is however an argument for it and it's footage from the last
seven playoffs yeah yeah um i'm i'm just tired i'm tired i'm exhausted as a lease fan um you
guys probably heard me uh you know talk about this a bunch in nashville but people kept going
what do you think of this year who do you want the leafs to get and i said i hope they go out
and get lucic i hope they go out and get perry i hope they go out and get reeves i don't care
i think this year should be operation they can't suspend us all um because that is what the best
teams do they can't suspend us all or they won't suspend us all if you're vegas petro getting one
game getting the same as nurse hilarious listen if sheldon keith wasn't fired because his back-to-back
seasons were 115 and 111 points they're so good they didn't win the division either of those years
by the way but they're so good they can sacrifice 11 goals they can sacrifice a little bit who's to
say they're not gonna get it from somewhere else too is my my like matthews had a a low scoring
you're at 40 something goals last year like what if he scores 10 more they might now the other
argument i don't like against this because i feel like you're entirely missing the point
is that the leafs have tried this no they haven't they haven't tried this for 10 years
um oh they went out and they got matt martin they went out and they got one of the toughest
players in the league definitely uh they went out and they got kyle clifford
outside of the top 10 probably inside of the top 20 right but kyle clifford was never fully like it
i mean the one thing about ryan reeves that you hear a lot is that in the dressing room and and
on the ice there's like an impact he's yeah out there jawing with guys and and you know that's
the positives right that's what gave up assets for kyle clifford yeah yeah they didn't have to do
that now jesse no no wait oh sorry continue continue continue finishing my point ryan reeves
is the guy he's there's no one you want to be on the other side of less than ryan reeves when it
comes to this stuff i am okay with having an absolute battering ram taking care of a sam
bennett when he choke slams your rookie taking care of radko gudas in game one like ryan reeves
i know you haven't been here so you don't inherit all these beefs if you want to be a fan favorite
Take notes. Go back and look at some of the footage. You go after Radko Guda's first game. First game. You don't talk to our goalie like that. Think of the amount of incidences. Does Nazem Kadri get suspended once or twice with a player like that on the ice?
I don't think so. I don't think so. Does Michael Bunting? But the problem with that, Steve, is that if they only have one, they only have one guy like with Bunting, you can ISO him. I agree. And that's a problem.
So they're going to have to do more.
If they go out and they get Ryan Reeves
and he's the only guy that's garbage.
And they need to get,
the next guy's got to be tough and has to play.
Yes, so this is the thing.
People are acting like they're going to force him
into the lineup.
We already know that's not true.
Wayne Simmons is one of the toughest guys in the league.
They've had him the last two years.
This past year, he didn't play.
So I like it.
If they execute it properly,
which as it stands right now,
they need at least one or two other guys jesse's 36 years old three-year deal does that give you
any pause it does a hundred percent because last season if we remember how ryan reese's season went
12 games into last year the new york rangers said there's no place in our lineup for him
and they sold him to minnesota for a fifth round pick this was a team with stanley cup aspirations
we saw how it went in the playoffs and they said hey ryan reeves can't crack our lineup so it'll
be it's interesting now that the Leafs take a look at him well Minnesota did last year and they said
hey that's that's an important piece and now the Leafs have taken him and he's going to be in their
lineup we'll see how that plays out but if they're purchasing an attitude change for 1.35 million
dollars for the next three years I don't entirely mind it you know if this is what it takes to
turn the Leafs around and get that attitude that we want out of the players then it'll entirely be
worth it but i don't know the the what he provides on the ice is is a net zero it's a net negative
until the playoffs until the playoffs where he's not going to contribute offensively no at all but
he might shouldn't have to he shouldn't have to because the stars show up but the stars have never
showed up for the leafs so it's a matter of hey we gotta wait till the playoffs and see if he
actually makes the lineup because that's still a concern because as you outlined with wayne simmons
when push comes to shove sometimes they just don't play the guy that they brought into play during
the playoffs they'll find a way um i i you know i want to throw something out there for you okay
ryan ryan reeves uh i've confirmed via cj ryan reeves will have no trade protection
so that means that they can trade them the other thing i want to remind everybody who's freaking
out about this contract and this is why i like it's not like i'm like uh doing backflips in the
you know, outside of the SDPN building.
Like, this is great.
I think he's a good ad.
I think he's a good dressing room guy.
I think they need a little more tension.
I think they need a little bit more loud
in their dressing room.
But I think beyond all that,
beyond all that,
if it works poorly and they can't dump them,
guess what they can do?
Send them now.
Bury the effing contract.
We're almost up to, I think this year,
it's close to 1.2 million that's buriable.
Yeah, they won't be able to bury the entire amount.
But it's like a hundred grand.
And next year, it will be $1.3 million.
But what if he decides to retire instead of going to the AHL?
Okay.
So that's interesting.
Because to qualify that question before you guys answer it,
if he retires, because he's over 36 and it's one of those special over 36 contracts,
that sits on the cap as dead money if he retires.
However, he's made a lot of money.
He's made $17.2 million over his career.
but that's also not a lot of money by like nhl standards so it's 17.2 minus taxes minus agent
fees escrow minus about 30 minus his mortgage um so he's probably living good he's living better
than most of us i bet um but this is a lucrative deal um and there's lots of he seems fairly
healthy um there's lots of incentive to keep playing and if he does get sent down to the ahl
he actually gets a pay raise like uh everyone does uh because well not everyone because he
doesn't everyone on a one year uh one way deal because he doesn't have to pay into escrow uh
one thing that so so you don't think there's a a chance he retires there's a chance yeah uh but
you don't think it's likely i don't think it's likely because he would want the money no i mean
And if you retire, you don't get any of the contract remaining?
I think you get all of it.
Oh, so then what is the argument for...
I don't know if he actually gets the money,
but the team incurs the cap hit.
Yeah, so that's what I'm asking.
If he retires, does he get no more?
Like, if he retires, one of your...
Yeah, that means you don't get the money, but the cap hits.
He gets none of the money.
Yeah, he's not...
Listen, he's not going to retire.
Here's how I think this could play out if it goes bad.
Maybe.
They'll put him on LTIR.
He's not retiring.
He wants his money.
This could play out if it goes bad. This could be a very, very, very reduced version of the Marlowe deal where Marlowe signed for 6.25, which is a lot more than 1.3 or 1.35 in and around there. And they had to give up a first to move that deal. That's not going to happen here.
um there will be a team willing to take that on for far less than a first round pick so if things
go bad that's how you get out of it and you're giving up an asset and that sucks but there's a
i think we're we're we're doomsdaying this before it's even happened listen the guy's playing the
deal no no question he's playing the deal um and and the reality of the situation is this is the
first piece of a few that the Leafs would like to add, which, you know, names in there include
Tyler Bertuzzi and Eric Carlson. If the reports are to be believed, I'm not saying they could
add both, but I'm saying they're interested. So I think at the end of the day, let's, let's calm
down in the freaking out. Ryan Reeves will be fine. And by the way, the cap's going up 4 million
one year next year, and probably 4 million the year after it's not really going to matter all
that much, but we will continue, uh, uh, you know, watching for any other details that come in.
One thing that's, that's cool for Leafs fans. Just last thing, they got a fan favorite.
like how the Ryan Reeves jersey is going to sell like crazy and the Scotiabank arena is going to
go crazy when he's he's big fights and the fourth line will have an identity Jesse it's going to be
it's going to be awesome to root for Ryan Reeves and I'm as a Leafs fan I'm very excited for there
you go Oliver Ackman Larson Florida Panthers 2.25 million dollars he was just bought out by the
Vancouver Canucks uh about a week ago um and by the way this is brought to you by Sports Interaction
get into the action with Sports Interaction sportsinteraction.com slash sdpn19 plus please
play responsibly so here's the deal oliver eckman larson is what you call a reclamation project this
was once a guy that we regularly spoke of as one of the most underrated players in the league one
of the best defensemen in the league and signed a gigantic contract with the john chayka arizona
coyotes and i think that's important it's important to know which era it was um the jim benning
vancouver canucks made an enormous trade to get him and uh who could have who could have known
that this would have been bad except for everybody heist of the century um he will make 2.2 sorry he
will make uh uh basically sorry you had it i did have it yeah 2.25 he's gonna make 2.216 million
dollars with the vancouver canucks until 2030 2031 oh but his 2.25 with florida seems like a
really great opportunity for a team coming off a hot streak they gotta be a popular death uh
destination do you like this deal not for oel but for the florida panthers guys uh i do like it for
the florida panthers uh and i'll tell you why because a lot of people are going to be like
oel's cooked i think he was cooked at 8.25 or whatever it was he was making it was over eight
um yeah it's just we we talked about it with blake wheeler um we haven't really had the chance to
talk about it with matt duchesne um oel but those are all players in similar situations with similar
cap hits where they just weren't worth that money were they effective nhl players blake wheeler is
yeah uh matt duchesne is certainly and then there's the question with oel but what team
in the nhl has had better luck with reclamation projects over the last three years than the
florida panthers i mean okay name the names you're talking about they've resurrected some wild career
sam bennett couldn't get into calgary's lineup now he's a huge uh difference maker for them
carter verhage could barely get into tampa's lineup even though he was emerging and they gave
him a home um what about anthony duclair anthony duclair thank you is a very good one and he should
probably get paid today um and they found uses for um eric stall who i thought was pretty much
cooked and mark stall played a way bigger role on the florida panthers than i think any of us
thought he would um should they go out and try to get an upgrade on him yes and i think they did
with uh oliver eckman larson he but he has some things to prove very low risk jesse how do you
see oliver eckman larson fitting into this lineup with forsling ekblad uh montour um there's some
there's some good depth here but it clearly they they need a little more yeah you know their their
The left side is looking a little weak because Ekblad and Montour will be on the right side there.
So Ekman-Larsen fits in perfectly there.
And for him, it's the perfect situation to get your career back on track because there's no pressure on him to do anything.
You know, he can play in the middle of that core there of the defensive pairings.
Like if he's on the second pair there, maybe they have somebody else playing a top on the left side.
It's perfect.
And there's no pressure because everyone else there we saw during that Stanley Cup final run,
And there's so many guys there that'll take the brunt of the action away from OEL.
And he can just sit back and let the Kachuks, the Bennetts, Montour do all the heavy lifting.
And the same way Aaron Ekblad kinds of plays like a more reserved game, now OEL can do that on the other side, on the left side, and just sit back and kind of get his game back together.
I think there is a ton of opportunity.
When you have a quote unquote reclamation project and Steve, you know, you talk about
the Florida Panthers and giving people those opportunities, the least when they were bad,
really bad pre Matthews, um, we're really good at this, right?
They, you, you bring these guys in on cheap one or two, your deals, you give, you know,
you expose them.
And then for the Leafs, it was trade them away for draft picks at that point.
That's the difference.
But, but I think, you know, OEL, if things go well, I hear that Florida is really nice
in December, January, and February, uh, seems like a really good fit for him.
and another name that might come up
for the Florida Panthers,
and we don't know yet
because it has not been announced,
potentially, Blake Wheeler.
Yes.
He has a home in Florida
and Paul Maurice made him his captain.
I've seen a lot of people say,
you know, Paul Maurice left
because of the toxicity of the locker room
and this and that.
Do you remember ever reading that?
No, I remember hearing it.
I think you heard it
because people assumed it.
Okay.
Because of the rumors, well, rumors and some proven about that locker room.
But I don't remember ever reading that as confirmed.
Okay.
Okay.
Paul Maurice didn't strip him of the captaincy.
Rick Bones did.
He did.
You're right.
You're right.
So everyone out there making that assumption, I'm not even saying you're wrong.
It's actually a somewhat logical assumption.
And that's why you made it.
Where'd you get it from?
That's a good question.
That's a really good question.
So we'll see what happens.
going forward oliver ekman larson is now a florida panther shoring up that left side we'll
see what he can do and maybe next year we're talking about him making a big big long-term
deal again you know the rumors of him never playing and can just be thrown on ltir vancouver
those seem unfounded yes yeah there were there was a lot of criticism to the canucks regime about
hey just put them on ltir and you'll never play again that seems like it was very unfounded you
can't just do that no well the player needs to be in on it i mean if it's a lou lambrello team you
can but the panthers and the canucks are not concrete shoes buddy exactly all right we'll
keep it going luke shen three years 2.75 million dollars the video is brought to you by sports
interaction get into the action with sports interaction sports interaction.com slash sdpn
19 plus please play responsibly luke shen three years 2.75 million dollars per year
Nashville Predators.
This is a team that bought
out Matt Ducheney. You know what? Maybe the reason they bought out
Matt Ducheney is so they could afford Luke Shen.
Maybe that's what it was.
No, it's a lot of money and a lot of term
for a guy in his mid-30s.
Nothing wrong with it,
but it depends on
really sort of what Nashville's trying to go
for here, and they have been one of the
wilder teams. So we'll focus
on the Nashville part. It's Minnesota.
No, it's not.
The wilder teams.
one of the i'm like no it's not it's the east nashville predator i'm like i know i heard
oh my god okay i'm like i did not mess up the teams there's no way i was like do we have to
reshoot the video um so so here's the deal guys uh we've got um we got a player who looked to be
on his way out had a very effective time in vancouver kind of reset his game over the last
few years especially with the tampa bay lightning and those cup runs did really great with toronto
was a good physical presence and Toronto did want to retain him but I can tell you they didn't want
to retain him at three years and 2.75 million dollars per year we'll leave the Toronto part
for the for the for later let's talk about the fit in Nashville do you guys have any idea what
the Nashville Predators are trying to do right now uh no so that is the well you'd think their
top priority would be centers uh on account of they got rid of them all yeah uh Johansson and
duchesne are both gone johansson and duchesne and i would like to just say our criticism of those
deals at the time were founded and proved to be 100 correct yeah um they didn't have a number one
center they maybe had two number twos yeah maybe had one year each where they played like it uh
duchesne had a 40 goal year a couple years ago 43 yeah 43 40 and a hat trick you know um but
yeah they had they signed two number two centers hoping one of them would emerge neither of them
really did um luke shen the signing makes some sense culturally um just because well first of
all the term i think is important to him because of his young family he's got two or three kids
yeah um you know just a very young young child as well young child uh only a few months old
um and that was a factor when he came over to toronto from vancouver
um i think the baby was born within a week yeah of the trade deadline yeah yeah so you know that's
all that's all very tough so three years is very good for him um i think we can count on the preds
never going over the cap uh in that time so i don't think the dollar value will be an albatross
we are seeing teams uh sort of at the bottom weaponizing their cap space in strange ways
um the predators are doing doing it maybe giving luke shannon overpay um but it doesn't matter to
them uh the chicago blackhawks are giving ludicrous contracts out andreas the fantasy
whose contract is ludicrous cory perry making four million is ludicrous nick felino nick felino
making four million is ludicrous um but they're obviously trying to sign these guys um establish
a better culture within the team uh protect some of their younger guys and then ship them off for
assets in the future that's obviously not the case with luke shen maybe in year three
um but it's it's it's an interesting new world where all the worst teams uh not only get the
benefit of the draft but they also get the benefit of free agency because they have all the money to
spend it's not bad to have a guy who can protect a young team they lose mark boreatsky who sort of
had that role um you know cody glass phil tomasino all the other guys they have a ton on nashville
um you know and yakov trennan can throw him too so i think luke shen just helps all that um
um but if we're ready to get to the leafs part we're not jesse uh what do you see here
since the tyson berry trade uh the national predators have been freeing up cap space you
know they then they make the ryan johansson trade then they make the matt duchesne buyout and all
they've been doing is freeing up cap space and this is what they choose to spend the cap space
on it it's a little curious to me because it's not the one it's not the one year deal you know
it's not the hey we gave luke shen four million dollars for one year and then it's gone who cares
it's three years and he's sticking around and there's there's been a lot about like hey what
is barry trotz working on like why is he getting rid of these players who's he bringing in and
the culture fit is that's exactly what he wants like he's overpaying for culture and he gave
luke shen term and it's just curious that this is so important to you that you're willing to
use the cap space that you just acquired which is the most important thing for a general manager
right now in the National Hockey League is acquiring cap space.
You know, it's the biggest weapon you can have.
And you're choosing to spend it right away on Luke Shen for three years.
So here's what I see here.
OK, here's what I'm looking at.
I'm looking at Roman Yossi at nine.
Ryan McDonough at six and six point seven.
Tyson Berry at four and a half.
Luke Shen at two point seven five.
Dante Favreau at two and a half.
And Jeremy Lowe's on it, too.
That's how the top six sort of looks right now for the the Nashville Predators.
We know Barry Trotz is a defensive minded guy.
But here is what I'm seeing with the Luke Shen deal.
We're looking at it as what is it going to be in an $83 million cap situation?
Well, I want you to look beyond that.
I want you to look at what is this going to look like in an $87 million cap scenario?
What's it going to look like in a $92 million cap scenario or a $90 million cap scenario?
Because what I see with Luke Shen is if he can maintain his game, they're going to have to use him in the proper situations.
You cannot throw Luke Shen out there against team's top players all the time.
he is there for 12 to 15 minutes a night max he's there to crush bodies and knucks did it
well i know but how to work for them knucks and leafs boilerplate for success leafs finally won
a round that's fair dude his his where they got outplayed most of the series in that first round
and they won so all i'm gonna say is that he partners last year were quinn hughes and morgan
riley the the nashville predators are retooling luke shen has a perfect contract for not this year
but next year to be moved and especially the year after oh to be moved yeah that's a guy that
eventually you recoup you recoup assets for because i don't think you're competitive next
by the time you want to trade him he's 35 years old i think you want to trade him with a year
left on his deal those guys are the most valuable he's 36 no no with a year left on his deal so
next not this coming year but the year after yeah then he's 30 because he turned 35 he turned 34
this year like his birthday's in november so then by the time that that year left rolls
year left rolls around he's 36 years old and he's 2.75 million dollars for your third pairing
defenseman that's i'm sure that that's not going to be something that those teams worry about i
think we got to remember that the percentage on the cap is what people are going to be looking at
and i think that this is an easily movable deal if they want to recoup some assets or they have
a young defensive prospects that that is pushing their way up it's it's listen is it an overpay
in today's terms absolutely but we have to keep every contract today in mind what it looks like
in 24 on July 1st
and what it looks like
in 2025 on July 1st.
If you're not trying
to win this year.
And they're not.
I mean,
who's going to score for them?
They got Philip Forsberg
and Colton Sissons.
It's Barry Trotz.
And Yakub.
He doesn't give a crap
about his team scoring.
He doesn't score.
You're right.
You're right.
He's building teams.
Look at the Islanders.
You're right.
He's building teams the way,
well, look at the Predators
for 20 years.
Yeah.
David Leguan,
57 points,
your leading scorer.
Left, they're like,
can we score now?
And then, no.
No, you can't.
yeah okay so it's going to be a very interesting one luke shen for three years i also guys i kind
of wonder what this luke shen deal did the did the predators have to go the extra year to get
yes um you know i think we saw it to a different degree with reeves i keep going back to patrick
marlo and that deal um when luke shen got here i was like why did why does he only make 800 grand
and why did he only cost a third round pick because everyone's like oh he's big he hits he
can play tough minutes with some big players he's a great guy and i'm like that doesn't add up to
800 grand that adds up to a lot more he has everything you want except for offensive ability
i don't understand and to me this is the this is the correction right he should have been worth a
lot more than a third round pick at the deadline you know who might be scoring for them who do you
got ryan o'reilly yeah is that is that are we close on that it's 4.5 million dollars for the
next four years ryan o'reilly to the national predator okay he's now there he's their highest
paid forward okay we'll get that in the next video what i think that philip forsberg oh yeah
yeah yeah yeah yeah and also possibly the buyouts of ryan johansson
4.5 over four years i bet that comes with some trade protection
But my question with Ryan O'Reilly is,
and he's a great leader in that sort of thing,
that's a guy, I guess he's won his cup,
make your money, that sort of thing.
4.5 is less than I thought he was going to get.
I wonder if they spread that over the four-year term.
My concern with Ryan O'Reilly is the foot speed.
But on the Nashville Predators,
with Barry Trotz and defensive-minded,
I don't know if that's going to matter.
It's kind of perfect, actually, the fit.
um listen you build teams from the net out they got a great goalie yep then you go to defense
they added on defense uh and then you go up front and you have like a guy who maybe not anymore but
he was a perennial selkie conversation guy i don't know how many votes he got this year probably not
many um and he scores a little bit which is probably a little more than barry trotz wants
hey whatever you were scoring please make it less whoa whoa slower down ryan i want to i want to i
think like a team built by a guy who is defense first second and third ryan o'reilly actually
makes a lot of sense david poyle got the nashville predators to the finals in 2017 and that was great
however he had no luck with centerman after that ryan johansson deal is four million dollars on
the cap the next two years matthias ekholm uh was this is part i'm just reading all the all the dead
cap and retain money um matthias ekholm is just a quarter million for the next three years but then
here's here there's matt duchesne which is 2.5 this year and then 5.5 and then 6.5 the year after
so 25 26 that's painful and here's the other one you forgot about kyle turris kyle turris is making
$2 million for five more seasons.
Because he retired.
Is it on the cap?
It is on the...
It's buyout history.
It's technically a buyout.
Oh, is it a buyout?
Yeah, technically a buyout according to Capra.
I guess he wouldn't have been old enough
for it to be like plus 35.
Yeah.
He's still only 33 years old.
That's rough.
And so it looks like Barry Trotz
is trying to change
what was one of the biggest flaws
of the Nashville system,
which is they always had good defense.
They always had a goaltender
that could probably win you a Vezna,
Rene, and then Soros.
but they never had those centers they thought they had them with johansson and dushane although
a lot of us asked why i mean they're not there yet it's clearly a retool but does it's are they
trying to win like i think they're trying to get in yeah and get in and be a pain in the ass to
play against do you really want to play the nashville predators even currently built not
really they're going to be in the conversation um like for that final playoff spot i mean i don't
know if it's great to always be in the position they were in last year um listen one thing the
preds are doing and it it's obvious a lot of teams are doing they are banking the hell out of
um the cap going up yes no question so cap goes up four million all right that clears up this buyout
and this buyout cap goes up by another two or three million all right that clears out this buyout
so by the time all those buyouts are done who knows maybe these guys went a cup and a walk
yeah i don't know yeah um they you never know but but they're they're also doing something that we've
encouraged teams to do for years they're moving on they're moving on from situations that weren't
working um it never felt even with dushane's 43 goal year and i know people were trying to dunk i
thought that was a bad contract from the start i thought johansson bad contract from the start but
But, you know, when people were excited about Duchesne scoring 43,
it's like, yeah, but that got you five games against the Avalanche.
Four.
Oh, were they just swept in that series?
They were swept, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
No goalie.
That got you one Conor Ingram game.
Yeah, one Conor Ingram game, but they lost.
And you bring up the goalie, they have UC Soros.
That puts you in competition for any win any night.
Yes.
so uh are they a cup contender that's difficult to envision are they a playoff team maybe yeah
especially in a weaker western conference so uh we'll see what else the national predators do
they're out of control he joined the divisional rival of the blues too interesting blake wheeler
800 000 with the new york rangers videos brought to you by sports interaction get in on the action
with sports interaction 19 plus please play responsibly and check out sports interaction
dot com slash sdpn the rangers make two veteran ads first one blake wheeler eight hundred thousand
dollars with 300 300k and potential bonuses uh jonathan quick is the other one we're going to
start with it's like 825 we have 825 for 25 okay that's brand new information i'm so glad we know
so for 1.625 million dollars you get 55 point blake wheeler which is pretty great uh and then
Jonathan Quick, who we're not sure is an NHL goalie by most standards anymore.
This might be a resume signing, but we'll start with Blake.
Obviously, a good year last year, despite being stripped of the captaincy and not really
getting along with the head coach and fighting after the last, you know, with the last game
versus Vegas in the first round where, you know, Rick Bonas came out and said that they
were lifeless and they were lifeless.
And Blake Wheeler was the only one who disagreed.
there's been a lot of questions about Blake Wheeler as a leader there's been a lot of
questions about Blake the Blake Wheeler time in Winnipeg which had its successes but he doesn't
have to be a leader in New York does he no but there's a very interesting power dynamic going
on there who's the captain of the New York Rangers who's Stephen Jacob Truba that's right
who used to be under uh under quote-unquote uh Blake Wheeler so for all the problems that they
had in winnipeg uh there's no way they make this signing without the blessing of the captain yes
uh or maybe even endorsement um of the captain like listen we've criticized blake wheeler on
this podcast a bunch that's the bargain of the day uh you're not going to be able to beat that
uh 16 goals uh 39 assists 55 points in 72 games no you're not beating that um that's not an 825
thousand dollar player uh that's a fantastic deal for the new york rangers that's a player that
new york uh new york toronto does this too with with hometown guys but new york uses
its cachet and they should la should do this too florida teams do this it's like hey i know you
want to make all that money but you've made a lot of money why don't you come play on broadway
one thing i will criticize about the deal the rangers needed to get better offensively and
they didn't with this deal they got worse stop well they're gonna look at his stat line and be
like he had 55 points what the hell are you talking about he had 55 points which is good
they got worse defensively right i think they got a better defense than the winnipeg jets though
and a much better goalie but if they had a perceived we're we're grading on curves here
winnipeg jets had aspirations of who the farting into the winds last year the rangers had aspirations
of winning the cup which they obviously didn't do they had they blew a two nothing series lead
in the first round if they had a perceived weakness it would be defense and maybe a little
toughness he has some snarl so that's good absolutely dreadful wretched back checker so
that's it's a that's going to be something they have to make jesse you got a big smile on over
there yeah well i just i think what steve's saying is is very funny if it might be true but it's also
very funny yeah um on the quick side of the deal uh that's the one that that perks up my ears
because i was watching this last season and like the whole thing with la and then going to vegas
and he needs he wants to keep playing and all that stuff jonathan quick is chasing the most
wins by an american-born goalie in nhl history he's at 375 wins ryan miller has the record the
all-time record at 391 so jonathan quick is gonna try and keep playing the for the rest of his life
until he can try and pass that record we know that's something he cares about he wants to have
that record he wants to probably reach 400 if he can but at least 392 so igor last season played i
think 58 games we can expect that number to come down a little maybe he's in the like 50 range the
53 that he was at the previous season so that jonathan quick can get into some games here
try and compile some wins maybe only have to play like two more years and get that record
you know maybe this is ignorant but if it's not working out with quick that's a relatively easy
problem to fix teams have too many goalies teams wave goalies all the time um i mean if they want
to go the leafs model they can pull anyone off the freaking street and play them in final four
games in an important stretch run where your starting goalie is hurt god i'm never gonna
forgive them but um yeah so if quick is very obviously not the answer by like american
thanksgiving they'll be fine that's why i love these two moves because the money is nothing
they're it's literally not 800 grand for both of these guys ryan reeves is gonna make about a half
or sorry two times what blake wheeler makes next yeah you get to add two veteran pieces for
something that's not even gonna have any effect on your cap yeah exactly great for the rangers
rangers fans should be very happy it does make me wonder sort of what they're gonna do with
tarasenko and kane like if they brought wheeler in like this do you not feel like maybe there's
maybe there's more to that you know what i mean maybe they are sticking around maybe they're
trying to put the a team of just terrible on defense forwards like compile all the worst
defensive forwards in the league and then hope that your defense and goaltending they really
they gotta figure that out because kane and tarasenko are horrendous fact checkers so maybe
they're used to it laviolette i don't know is he gonna be able to handle these guys they gotta
to figure that out. One thing I think the Rangers
probably do is scout the Jets
pretty well. They got Paul
Stastny from them, and he was great.
Or no, not
Paul Stastny. Who did they get?
It was a third-line center.
I forget. Doesn't matter.
And also Jacob Trubo. There you go.
Thank you for that. You're welcome.
Unnamed center. I can't wait to find out
who it was in the comments section.
Who are you thinking of? Andrew Kopp.
What? That was a good pickup.
I wish I got it right the first time.
Carolina has locked up both goalies for $5 million.
The video is brought to you by Sports Interaction.
Get in on the action at sportsinteraction.com slash SDP.
And let's have a look at this.
Freddie Anderson, 32, 21, and 11 last year.
And his deal is a two-year extension, $3.5 million.
That coincides with Antti Ranta, who signed a $1.5 million extension with the Carolina Hurricanes a few days ago.
Now, this is a goaltending tandem that has worked for the Carolina Hurricanes.
And at times, it's tenuous because both of these goalies have injury history.
You call it a tandem, but it's a throuple.
It is a throuple.
Kachetkov is there.
Like, this confuses me.
Like, I don't get it.
They have a goalie.
Maybe throuple is the way to go.
here's here's where it's where it's very confusing so at face value 3.5 plus 1.5
5 million dollars so they have freddie anderson and auntie ranta for the same price that the
leafs paid for freddie anderson yeah when he was here uh here's something i didn't realize
until i looked it up just now auntie ranta signing for 1.5 million dollars makes him their third
to highest paid goalie because kachetkov who i thought was still on his entry level deal
is actually about to head into the first year of an eight million dollar contract paying him
two million dollars for the next four years so seven million for three goalies yeah that's good
value yes but this flies directly in the face of one of the criticisms we've said about the
carolina hurricanes they're cheap they don't like to spend money well they're either going to pay
a goalie two million dollars to play in the minors next year or 1.5 million dollars to play in the
minors next i think if you're the carolina hurricanes you're smart enough to know that
both freddie and auntie rant are getting injured this year but you also know you're gonna need
three they are going to get injured that's what they are but uh that you're also smart enough to
know this and i've been really critical of freddie anderson's playoff success but in nine games this
year uh 183 goals against average and a 927 that's in the playoffs uh and anti-ranta not so bad
either listen uh 248 and a 909 save percentage but in today's nhl they're high scoring affairs
and that team got all the way to the eastern conference finals where they were swept even
though they don't believe that they were swept and i think at at a certain point when you've
got kachekov coming up this is probably the last year that we see the three of them together
Kachekov is going to establish himself at some point this year.
Antirantus deals a million and a half.
And oh, no, we've got three goalies who can play goal.
Well, that sounds terrible.
If Kachekov doesn't make the team or rather is kept in the minors the whole time, he's got 500,000 reasons to not complain.
Shout out Cap Friendly.
His new deal comes with a $500,000 signing bonus.
Incredible.
Which I imagine he's getting.
And if he's in the minors, he's not paying NHL escrow.
So he's making more money.
That's amazing.
So like there's a possibility.
Don't make me do the math.
Like he might be taking home more than Freddie Anderson.
I want to throw this out there, too.
And I'm such you guys know this.
I'm such a fan of the Carolina Hurricanes.
Don Waddell regime.
You know, Waddell, Tulsky, Rod Brendamore.
I am sick of you.
They are.
This is a well-run team.
This is something what they're doing here.
i can guarantee you sometime over the next uh 12 months we're going to be talking about the
carolina goaltending thing and is that a blueprint for success should more teams be spreading their
money around a couple of vets and a young goalie if you have it like you know the leafs is that
you know i hate to make it about the leafs but there's a team that had a similar situation last
year albeit with less good goaltending um matt murray uh ilia samsonov and the emergence of
wool at the end of the year and i wonder if they look at something like that and go why couldn't
we do the same thing well the leaf situation i mean if all your goalies get hurt there's not
much you can do about that yeah right like they were they were digging deep and they had to sign
keith petruzzelli make it make it uh five goalies deep in the system um but most teams are gonna
have to use their third and not every team has their third as an option yeah um there are some
non-options out there so you're not two injuries away from puckering you're one injury away from
puckering because all of a sudden that guy's the backup and two injuries is disaster so that guy's
starting games for you like even eric shelgren was passable as the leafs third slash fourth option
last year when he got called up but there are some teams out there that are screwed no one has a
better one two three than the hurricanes i don't know not that i could who do you give a brofsky
alex lion and spencer knight yeah that's pretty good and it's funny that you you bring up the
three goalie thing and because we saw this happen with carolina this playoffs i don't know if you
guys remember uh the new jersey devils uh shelling the carolina hurricanes eight four in one of the
games in their series but in that game freddie anderson allowed four goals and anti-ranta was
injured and kachekov played in the playoffs and he allowed four goals in that game and was horrendous
he had a really bad game against the leafs to remember uh did he he had a game where he was
straight up the reason the least one i'm gonna be honest with you steve whenever you say he had a
really bad game do you remember jesse and i probably aren't gonna remember it only because
you can remember every leaf school that happened this year because that's the way your brain works
listen who doesn't love coochie i don't know if he's still going by that nickname but uh i mean
it's a good question with with that with that game that kachukov played during the playoffs and he
allowed a lot of goals i wonder if carolina looked at that and said hey we were in a scenario where
we needed three goalies this year uh he got into i think 20 plus games this regular season
so he's playing things from his from his phone
so last year they needed three goalies why not bring back three goals it makes a lot of sense
now that initially you're like,
they have a goalie ready to go.
Why do they need another replacement?
When you reason it out,
it makes sense to go with three.
And they couldn't score in the playoffs.
They have two major injuries
to Pacioretty and Svechnikov
going into the playoffs.
And they still make the third round.
I know.
Carolina, watch out next year.
Watch out.
One quick correction.
Alex Lyon, UFA.
Oh.
Oh, so yeah.
The trio, the throuple there in Florida
isn't intact right now.
They're not in bed together.
Seems to work.
In the summer of 2019, I could have sat here if the SDPN even existed back then,
which it didn't, and I could have said to you guys,
the Senators may have solved their goaltending woes by signing Matt Murray.
Man.
Trading for.
Trading for and then signing Matt Murray.
That didn't happen.
They thought they had a goalie in Anton Forsberg,
and they did until he tore his MCL in both knees this year.
he's gonna have to be it could it could be november december before he even gets on the
ice again and starts playing hockey we're not quite sure on that there hasn't been an update
since april on his injury but judas corposalo is leaving the los angeles kings and going to
the ottawa senators four million dollars per year over five years he's 29 years old and somehow on
a terrible nashville sorry not nashville columbus team last year he was able to be 11 and 11 uh
which is, and then, you know, three overtime losses.
That's, I'll call it a, I'll call it a.
It's Batman 500.
Yeah, an NHL even.
Yeah, Batman 500.
And then he goes to LA and has a pretty good playoff,
seven and three when he,
seven, three and one in the regular season.
And then of course he played six games with LA.
I thought, I thought by series end,
the Oilers figured him out pretty good.
Well, and then the Oilers, right?
And that's why, I mean,
LA has done a whole bunch of stuff this year
to make themselves even better,
including Pierre-Luc Dubois.
But if you're Ottawa, you're not looking at the six games that he played and got, you know, kind of shelled by the Edmonton Oilers.
You're looking at what he did in the regular season for the bad Columbus Blue Jackets.
Well, I mean, a guy who gets shelled by the Edmonton Oilers is a perfect fit in Ottawa because I was not going to see him much.
That was the one thing that I remembered about the Canadian division, not relief related is, oh, my God.
Every time Edmonton came to town, they just slaughtered them.
It was brutal.
um so i'm looking at yonas corpus hella's career if you were trying to find a pattern uh good luck
there isn't one starting back from when he was a rookie i'll read you his safe percentages
920 905 897 897 oh i guess that's a pattern 911 oh uh 894 877 last year which is unusable
uh sorry two seasons ago unusable and then last year 913 with the dreadful columbus blue jackets
and 921 with the kings so uh he's played over 30 games three times in his career last year he set
a career high with 39 and that should probably raise your eyebrows because half a season is 41
so is he making he's making tandem goalie money so especially in the new cap yeah which most of
this contract will be in the new cap era so this to me says they have long-term aspirations of
anton forsberg coming back um which is good um i'm just you did you just you simply don't know
what you're gonna get listen if you get last year's uh unis corpus ala great signing okay
unreal signing um but corpus ala is rarely the same goalie in consecutive seasons okay i think
it's a great bet to make i think this is a goalie who showed a lot of great stuff behind the first
time he's behind a really good or a really good defense i think in la he performed spectacularly
what do you say about his playoffs though which he were not great edmonton oilers are a very good
hockey team his first time in the playoffs i don't fault him for having a mediocre playoffs
you know i thought i thought he was okay um some of that uh the leafs he's what he
he beat the leafs let's also let's also take into account that 2020 bubble uh playoffs that
corpus l had because that was unreal 70 70 game against tampa this is a great bet to make for the
ottawa senators because here if they got their starting goaltender it's four million dollars
for five years which is a fantastic price and his career is trending in the right direction based on
the last couple seasons you know it's it's been wishy-washy early on but it is columbus he didn't
have a strong team around him and if ottawa thinks what they think thinks they are what they think
they are at this point where they think they're going to be a contender very soon i don't see
why corpus all can't be the goaltender if he's in a tandem role why he can't be there supporting that
uh quick rebuild that they have in ottawa uh interesting little bit of intrigue for sense
fans there is a potential cam talbot versus eunice corpus hollow match when the oilers play
oilers sorry when the senators play the kings uh if the rumors are to be believed i don't think
talbot to the kings has been confirmed so they're basically uh that's who they're replacing cam
talbot with yeah zunis corpus yeah and i know that la wanted to bring him back but the as you
can see the price is too high and i shouldn't call it a quick rebuild in ottawa very long
been a long very long run out rebuild maybe this is the end finally i think what you want to say
is they want to get good and quickly and with a full season of josh norris you know he had that
that like total fluke injury you've got corpus all i don't know what they're going to do for
the secondary goaltending until Forsberg comes back
and maybe Forsberg's ready for camp and they know
that. It's, you know, at the end
of the day, in a perfect
NHL, EA Sports, NHL
24 scenario
and Forsberg isn't
injured, I think that looks pretty good.
And they got Sogard down in the minors
for eventually
down the road. He should be
a good starting goaltender. Brandstrom just
re-signed as well, one year, two million. And it's
interesting with that guy because, you know, there's a guy
that vegas picked very highly he was traded as a part of the mark stone trade and you'd think
uh with that particular deal uh first off brandstrom is supposed to be great uh it just
has not worked under dj smith apparently dj smith just does not like the way the guy plays to me
that's uh we're signing you oh you gotta raise it's not gonna work out here probably and they're
gonna trade him i don't think there's anything wrong with putting pressure on your young defenseman
and Ottawa has a bunch.
Jake Sanderson for one.
Jeff.
Jake.
Jeff's his dad.
Sorry.
Oh, my God.
Stop misnaming people named Jeff.
Not everyone is Jeff.
Don't do charm.
Jeff.
They're one of the best young decors in the league
because you're going to get a full season of Chikorin.
You got Hats and Bot Show.
You got Sanderson, like you said.
And yeah, Branstrom adds to that.
Still only 23.
Ottawa's future blue line
and Montreal's future blue line
in the same division is going to cause problems.
I bet Ann Lauer told them, go spend some money, too.
So that was something that Pierre Dorian had talked about.
It's like, well, I'm in contact with Ann Lauer.
So you do.
I mean, this is a five-year deal, right?
This is well into the future.
He's Ann Lauer's first starting goalie.
Yeah.
That's big.
That's a big deal.
You know what?
It matters.
That kind of stuff matters.
I can't imagine this deal is done without at least a nod and a wink from Ann Lauer.
So, good for the Senators.
We'll see if they do some more of it today.
They've certainly got the room to do it.
Ottawa currently, as of this video, $10 million in cap space and a lot of contracts signed.
So, they could just add for funsies if they want.
Why not?
Do you have a big set of fists?
Well, you're getting paid today.
You're getting paid in the NHL.
Luke Shen, three years, $2.75 million per.
Ryan Reeves, three years, $1.35 million per.
And we got two new ones.
And these are, this is whopping money.
We were told before this free agency that a lot of players are going to walk away sort of disappointed with the amount of money they're going to make.
I guess except if you're a tough guy.
Radko Gudis to the Anaheim Ducks for $4 million a year.
Eric Johnson just signed as well with the Buffalo Sabres.
$3.25 million for the Avs legend.
Okay, so.
But first.
But first.
Sports interaction.
Oh, yeah, that's right.
Hey, video is brought to you by Sports Interaction.
Remember, get in on the action with Sports Interaction.
You can also bet on free agency and all the other things all year long.
Sports interaction dot com slash SDPN.
The fists are making big money.
Why?
Well, we called this years ago, right?
Didn't I say it?
Market correction.
I remember.
Yeah, it's a market correction.
And honestly, it's the market inefficiency.
So I remember years and years ago, we were in a backup studio at the Sportsnet studios.
and the capitals signed tom wilson to their five plus million dollar deal and we said are they out
of their minds at that time he hadn't scored very much uh they must be nuts and i said well how many
tom wilson's are there kicking around like not just a tough guy not just a tough guy who can
play in your lineup but a tough guy who can be a difference maker um offensively well and you saw
that the habs tried to find it in josh anderson or mark bergevin did and and it's not always going
to work out right so there's they're the hardest guys to replicate some of the worst contracts
in recent memory have been from teams trying to replicate a player like tom wilson david clarkson
that was a bad contract josh anderson still an nhl player that's a bad contract though
the difference is goudas ain't that um he's one of the toughest guys in the league
four million dollars per is a lot now there's a couple things culturally just like luke shen in
nashville radco goudas is going to walk into a young team that got pushed around a lot they uh
haven't had nick delorier and jeff merrick's always beating that drum that since he walked
out of town. Um, they've just been getting beat up. Eric Johnson, I think, you know, is a guy who
will go you. I don't think he's a guy who you should make go you. I think that's just veteran
presence on a really young decor Rasmus Darlene and, uh, Owen power, but Radco Goodis to me
is a combination of things we talked about a while ago. And today, the while ago thing is
the market inefficiency on toughness. The thing we talked about today is bottom feeders with a
ton of cap space weaponizing that cap space to get their guy because it doesn't matter to them
jesse what do you think eric johnson brings to the buffalo oh i absolutely love this deal for
the sabers why exactly what they need like they how is he gonna make this about video games
well i drafted him once in my nhl game this is exactly what the buffalo sabers need they have
young scoring defensemen you know they have guys who can carry up the puck and do all the fun stuff
that you like that makes the highlight reels and what they didn't have was an eric johnson type and
like you said they have the cap space to spend and it's one year it's a lot of money yeah that's
no but that's the beauty of this deal it's one year it's not a three-year deal like gouda scott
it's the one year of eric johnson if it doesn't go well who cares you can get rid of at the end
of next year and it's exactly what they'll have they'll need in their lineup to support
all of the spectacular young talent that they have which team okay does buffalo at the deadline
retain half on eric johnson or do they find a third team to double retain on him
and how does that trade end up with him going back to colorado the buffalo sabers are keeping
eric johnson at the deadline as their own rental as they go for the playoffs they're gonna go for
it they're gonna go that's what's gonna happen they're gonna be fighting for a playoff spot
and they're going to have Eric Johnson, a Stanley Cup champion, to support them.
Listen, you know, a team with Kael McCarr did just fine with Eric Johnson on it.
Buffalo is hoping they have a couple guys who can maybe not replicate Kael McCarr,
but can come somewhat close.
So why not?
Divisionally, the Ducks are obviously not a threat in the Pacific.
We know that.
They will be eventually, but, you know, it's going to take some time.
the sabers are now i think they hit threat status last year right not just threat to make the
playoffs but threat to embarrass you um tage thompson is on you know a next level if he
continues that if jeff skinner can rekindle a little bit that's the only bad contract on that
team yeah i just i but useful 35 goals last year yeah 100 it's not nine million dollars but it's
like it's pretty good like seven it's pretty good better with age yeah and you know what next year
it won't even matter with the cap going up the way it is but i'm a lot better i'm thinking about
this from okay because we are Leafs fans at the end of the day i just want to think about this
from a purely Leafs perspective i don't think the Toronto Maple Leafs are going to like playing the
Buffalo Sabres next year they're Ryan Reeves when have they ever Ryan Reeves Eric Johnson fight
hockey night killer no i don't think that happens no maybe i don't know well we'll see what happens
The tough guys continue to get paid in free agency.
There are like three very specific ways that you can get performance bonuses in the NHL.
It's like ridiculously small.
One of them is a rookie contract.
Another is like the over 35, 36 deal.
And then you had to have like if you had to have in the middle, you have to have played 400 games and then have sat out something like 100 days.
And then you can get both.
It's great.
I'm surprised that the players actually allowed for that.
they should be able to get their performance bonuses but anyway connor brown okay you know
how i'm always saying not a league yeah with the nhl not a union not a pa yeah yeah it's fair
connor brown is going to the edmonton oilers and the contract is laden with um a lot of signing
bonuses it could go to 3.25 or sorry catherine is saying 3.3333 million dollars but the no that's
connor clifton connor brown will be two seven points there's too many a lot of connor's in the
nhl uh connor brown 775 but it could go up over three million dollars however if it does it goes
to a bonus pool that will be on next year like the following year's cap so it won't affect the
oilers this year obviously because the bonuses are not calculated until the end of the season
so what we're seeing here is is just another move that adds to all these nhl teams are operating
with great confidence that the cap is going to go up yep right yep so um that's one good thing
for the edmonton oilers and you're taking a bet here connor brown played four games last year
he was injured um but useful player before that useful player before that and he had a career
high in points the season before that in only 64 games with the senators he had 39 points um
he wasn't on pace to have a career high in goals he only had 10 but he's eclipsed 20 twice um
he's a guy who is going to make conor mcdavid happy he's a guy who knows conor mcdavid played
with him it kills me that zach hyman probably played a big hand in getting this signing done
it also kills me that supposedly the leafs were in on him right it came down to the leafs and
oilers according to the insiders and zach hyman helped lure conor brown away from the leafs i
want to get this line in videos brought to you by sports interaction uh sports interaction.com
slash sdpn if you had connor brown going to the oilers uh you probably won a nice little two
dollar steve bet now jesse what do you think connor brown if healthy brings to the edmonton
oilers who just feel like they're just an inch away from being there yeah no whatever uh a player
who makes a little bit amount of money goes to the edmonton oilers it's like okay is he gonna
go on the dry side of line the mcdavid not line or the nuge line and put up a shit ton of points
and just spike his career and then the next contract's going to be great you know or he's
going to re-sign in edmonton because he's been so effective there and this is exactly the type
of signings edmonton has to be doing for the next little bit you know go get your forwards who are
very undervalued and hopefully you insert them to the lineup and the stars that you have are going
to prop them up a little and i don't see how anybody goes there and isn't effective offensively
if you're a talent like connor brown and it's not just the offense he's a really um responsible
defensive player at five on five he can kill penalties he can probably play on your secondary
power play unit so he's really versatile in that regard and he's going to help out your special
teams in other ways he has eclipsed 20 penalty minutes in the nhl once wow that's value yeah and
for an team that hasn't been the most responsible in terms of not taking penalties like he's going
to be very effective and yeah when you have the the star power up front you you insert those
undersized uh forwards who are going to be responsible on their other end of the ice it's
perfect fit for it with clint costin and kaylor yamamoto out of town for contract reasons they
weren't going to be able to afford clint cost and obviously detroit ended up buying out kaylor
yamamoto as well um this seems like a really good uh depth bet for the whalers and you know what
the great thing about it is he's got like when i say depth it doesn't mean that he can't work his
way into the top six it just means he doesn't have to not right away you can get him get him
into camp get him acclimatized get him into the system and there's not some huge spotlight on
you know a depth piece making three and a half million dollars how about this again the season's
extremely long night one of the nhl season throw him on mcdavid's wing get him a goal oh yeah get
him feeling good oh okay how hard is that all right yeah pull off i don't mind that i don't
mind that at all no get get him on the top line get him a goal get him feeling good ride it the
rest of the year how many former leafs will be on the oilers roster win a cup well they got cody cc
they got zach hyman they got connor brown who am i missing well they traded barry yeah traded
barry got traded yeah jack campbell oh man hey listen that's still on the roster it's x leaf
central that's right that's pain man that is imagine they win a lot of really likable guys
too yeah cc we never really learned anything about no hyman connor brown and uh jack campbell
yeah just from a human factor too just for connor brown's career it's exciting to see somebody who
missed an entire scene while he played four games and then come back from injury and now he can play
again you know it's good to see that yep yeah absolutely i i uh from the times i've watched
him i would never bet against connor brown oh baby you're gonna want to sit down for this one
we just found out about it jesse doesn't even know the name we're talking about i think i stop
looking at twitter what do you want me to do how are you able to look at yeah we're apparently not
allowed to look at twitter i haven't looked at the the cap of 10 tweets a day yeah but elon has
instituted uh sports interaction.com slash sdp and the name we're gonna drop out there by the
way is justin hall the team detroit red wings the number 3.4 million dollars a year for how
many years guys how many how many years i i didn't three in three years three years three years 3.4
a year now in a what's wrong with that guys in a flat cap world that is painful however i will say
this keeping with my what's it gonna look like in july 24 and july 25 probably not bad on the
money part but what are detroit fans in for with justin hall i mean he lost his job to luke shen
who took less um so that's probably a bad sign um literally both three-year terms hall got far
more somehow um I was gonna say maybe Detroit will be a better fit stylistically we know that
is unlikely because Hall was a very effective defenseman on the Toronto Marlies um and he was
paired with another uh D with NHL uh resume with Martin Marincin uh Sheldon Keefe used them as
kind of the shutdown pair um they want to call the cup that's the minors yep yep hall has shown
flashes of great promise and has made some great plays with the leafs but there have been so so
many nights where he's just been barely treading water um you know the steve eisenman would know
defensemen who are good at moving the puck this makes sense i'm okay well i mean he's good at
getting it up the ice he does have his his his the the analytics love him you know what doesn't
love him is the footage dude like it's painful to watch sometimes his mistakes are obvious he
handles the puck in his own end like a grenade um so there's gonna be a delicate song and dance here
because he can do some good things for you.
He can be an effective penalty killer.
He can be good at advancing the puck up the ice.
If the forwards don't help him out,
if the forwards aren't in the proper position,
he's going to bobble the thing.
He's going to put it in his glove, throw it.
If there's a player skating towards him,
his decision-making on the fly isn't great.
He has all the talent.
He has all the skills.
And you know what?
I'll say this about Justin Hall.
Beloved in the dressing room.
People love him.
There's not a single bad word you can say about Justin Hall, the person.
But if you're a Detroit hockey fan and Detroit hockey fans are some of the most educated in the league, this guy will drive you nuts certain nights.
And he tends to drive you nuts when the game is on the line and there's a lot at stake.
In a full 82-game season, Mike Babcock scratched Justin Hall 71 times.
He played 11 games.
You never heard a peep of complaints.
He was showing up at the charity events and everything.
Not a peep of complaint.
The teammates love him.
I think this is going to make Mitch Marner pretty sad, actually.
Those dudes are pretty tight on the Leafs.
That's a good point.
So, good locker room ad?
That's not good locker room ad money.
That is, you need to make an impact on our team money,
and I'm not sure that's the guy.
I think you're overreacting a little,
because Adam's point that he consistently makes about the cap going up,
it looks a lot better.
plus when you're not in toronto the spotlight's a little easier we saw we saw what happened with
we saw what happened with cody cc in edmonton hockey town it got easier it got easier cody cc
if justin hall is in a role that's appropriate for justin hall he's gonna succeed so you actually
you bring up a really interesting point uh because someone was asking me about david camp's contract
and it applies to justin hall this is one of the first years i can think of where big term
on a contract actually makes me feel better about it because the this is the first time in a very
long time that the cap is going to go up yep long-term deals used to be i mean it's what
doomed the least basically it uh long-term contracts are okay it's expensive now it'll
be cheap at the end of it yeah and what everyone who signed a long-term contract like from basically
2018 onward um found out is oh the cap isn't going to go up so this is the first time in over half a
decade that we're going to see the cap go up significantly so term not the three years is
long term you know what it is um not a lot of guys were getting three years these last few years and
now they are they're getting it this off season though that seems to be the number season um
I think it benefits the team.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
The stability.
It goes up next year, so you feel better about the 3.4.
It goes up the season after.
He's in his prime-ish.
I think he's, what is he, 30?
31, I think.
But he's been relatively healthy.
I can't remember him missing many games due to injury.
And despite being one of the worst guys willing to fight in the NHL.
He's still willing to do it.
He's still willing to do it.
If he has to.
If you see him drop the gloves, just know he's probably about to get his ass kicked.
And you're probably losing.
And then you're probably in bad shape anyway.
Lion, you're probably losing.
But, you know, there better be a lot of backpats to go around.
I have one question for the both of you.
Give it to us.
If this is the number that somebody was willing to pay Justin Hall, the Detroit Red Wings, Steve Eisenman over there,
do we look back at Kyle Dubas and the way he ran the trade deadline and not say,
could there was there not a market for justin hall at the trade deadline yeah could you not
have gotten significant pieces if this is what he's able to get in ufa if jesse not only that
but the same thing with alex kerfoot wherever he signs this year there was a market for him
and the leafs needed to hang on to him they needed him they wanted him they said no we are not
including him in any deal and by the way the proposed deal apparently might have included
and I'll leave you with this note
Kerfoot in the St. Louis trade
Barbashev coming along with
Ryan O'Reilly and Nolichari
I did ask about Justin Hall not Alexander
I know I'm going to throw it out there to that point
what do you think the Hall could have been for Hall
I don't think
the Leafs ever really considered it
they wanted him for the playoffs
I will throw this in though
we talk about Hall
and how he wasn't great
once
you know he was
swapped in for Timothy Lilligren,
not this year's playoffs,
but the playoffs before.
You know who was assistant coach
on the Lightning that year?
Derek Lalonde.
Oh.
Who's their head coach there.
So a lot of fans didn't like it,
but apparently he did.
There you go.
So Justin Hall,
you are now a Detroit Red Wing
for at least three more years.
Take good care of him.
He is a good guy.
And always can always root for Justin Hall.
And I'll never forget this.
He was called up for his first game
in the National Hockey League
with the Toronto Maple Leafs on the father's trip
and he scored a goal in his first two games
and that was pretty cool.
So good luck, Justin Hall, and congratulations.
Dimitri Orlov, probably the biggest name out there
in free agency, at least on defense
with Gavrikov off the board,
takes the Gavrikov move.
He signed for two years.
We thought the Dimitri Orlov contract
was going to be gargantuan.
I'll tell you what it was in a second,
but first, this video is brought to you
by Sports Interaction.

Dimitri Orlov has signed with the Carolina Hurricanes
two years, $15.5 million.
The Carolina Hurricanes get better on defense.
A lot of people will say that's a lot of money
this year for Orlov, but when the cap goes up,
I don't think you're going to care.
Was it 7-7-5?
7-7-5, that's right, per year.
Oh, wow.
When the deal's up, the cap will have gone up
between if estimates are to be believed eight and ten million dollars so he can strike again
so this is very funny the last video we shot it was we were talking about it term because the cap
is going up significantly it sounds like uh term is something i actually look at as something that
makes the contract better well for the team for the team yes um for the player i completely
understand i mean he's getting paid he's never made 775 before so this will be the most money
he's ever seen he could cash in at the end of it and if he doesn't i mean he still made all this
money up front at the end of this contract looking at cap friendly his career earnings
at 33 years old he's 31 right now would be somewhere close to about 55 million so he's
already done well yeah but chances are you know it's just a couple more years he could he could
signed for the same amount of money on a bigger cap uh it's that's potential potentially this is
um it does make them better yep it's just one of those deals where i go oh that's spicy but it's
so short term it shouldn't matter and like it's a defense that it was really good and it got better
it's not like they ever fly by the seat of their pants with the cap either no like i'm looking at
it right now and they have um shveshnikov on injured reserve on cap friendly so i guess you
have to add that 7.75 back to the cap and they're currently they have 7.3 in cap space so they'd be
a couple hundred grand over right now with everybody on the roster but you're allowed to
operate over yeah you're allowed to operate so but there's probably a corresponding move by the
time we're all said and done that the carolina hurricane is going to make just to free up some
space we've been hearing brett pesci's name thrown out there but here's something that that i think
is interesting orlov probably takes the carolina hurricanes out of the eric carlson sweepstakes
for the San Jose Sharks.
And listen, I don't want to make this
about the San Jose Sharks,
but they got to make a move with this guy.
He won the Norris.
He's got 100 points.
They got to retain salary and move this player.
Carolina was apparently the lead team for him.
You cannot fumble this bag if you're San Jose.
He just won the Norris.
He scored over 100 points.
His contract's terrible.
You have to move him.
Seattle's my pick for that.
I think so too, Jesse.
I'm with you on that one.
It makes so much sense.
They got the room.
They got the space.
they need the big they got the draft capital yeah yeah i agree that'll make sense but carolina like
they're set up for next offseason just to have a completely new team like they have so many ufas
and rfas like it's gonna be interesting how they navigate this next season and bring back a whole
bunch of guys and make some moves and make some trades because they're always doing fascinating
things with the cap so i'm fascinated to see where they go with this you know we we did a video
talking about the carolina goalie situation and how it seems obvious you know they're going three
deep. Kachetkov
takes over as backup next year, maybe
starter in year two.
Is there a
scenario where he could potentially be dealt?
Orlov?
No, Kachetkov.
Again, I don't think so.
What do you need?
I think you need a young goalie.
I think you need a young goalie.
24 years old. They're the NHL's ultimate
thrumper goalie. Do not break up the thrumper.
If they bury him in the minors,
which right now he is in the minors,
so they have a cap penalty of $850.
You know, that's not too bad.
No.
You can deal with that.
No, it's, yeah, it's breakage.
It's a cost of doing business.
So listen, Orlov seems like a really good pick.
It does kind of determine Eric Carlson a little bit.
That becomes a little bit clearer
if that deal ever even happens.
And the Carolina Hurricanes continue to stock talent
on their blue line.
You know what, man?
It'd be pretty hard to not call them,
even right now, a Stanley Cup contender.
We've talked about this, but Eric Carlson never made sense putting him back together with Brett Burns.
No.
So it makes sense that they go with Orlov.
Yeah.
Okay.
Well, good luck to them.
They're having a great day.
Sports Interaction, for all your odds, it's sportsinteraction.com slash STPN.
I'm Adam.
He's Steve.
There's Jesse on the end.
Michael Bunting is a Carolina Hurricane.
Three years, $15 million, not per season.
Just $15 million total.
It's $5 million per season.
Michael Bunting brings a lot to a team.
And as much as some of what happened in the back half of his two-year deal with the Leafs became a bit of a sideshow,
this is an extremely useful player, a late bloomer, who I think fits Carolina pretty darn well.
I mean, he fits any team pretty well because he's a good player.
60-point guy?
It didn't end great here, but he's going to get you 20 goals.
I think you can be disappointed with anything under 45, 50 points.
He's willing to hit, he's willing to fight, he's willing to be a pain in the ass.
What I am fascinated to see is if his reputation follows him.
And by reputation, well, Carolina Hurricanes fans, you may know the story,
but if you don't, here it is.
Bunting, like over the last two years, has had one of the best penalty differentials in the NHL.
He's going to take a lot.
he's going to take a lot of penalties um but he's either going to drag you to the penalty box with
him or he's going to drive you nuts um and force you to take a stupid penalty and then he might
even be on the power play that ends up uh getting its revenge the as usual happens here in toronto
the valve shut off and referees treated him horribly he handled it very very very poorly
um it ended up getting him suspended put him on the fourth line in the playoffs healthy scratched
yeah playoffs um but he always seems to bounce back right he was he was in the lineup the night
the leafs won their first playoff series in 19 years um every time he's been put on the fourth
line he scored um doesn't kill penalties not a liability defensively kind of ho-hum and he's
certainly not going to be taxed with doing that uh in carolina so he might be a bigger offensive
threat in carolina than he was in toronto because they have so many guys who uh fill that role
already i'm so excited to see what who i think is one of the best coaches in national hockey league
rod brindamore i'm so excited to see him channel michael bunting's energy i think he's going to be
a wizard with that guy and and the energy that bunting brings to the ice i think brindamore is
going to be able to deploy it in the most perfect ways yeah and and i think there's going to be
brendan moore was a tough competitor and uh great sort of defensive player but also scored a lot of
points too in the dead puck era he was like almost like perfect second line center when he was
playing there's gonna be a lot that i think rod brendan moore is going to be able to teach michael
bunting directly you know what i mean like there's there's a toughness there's a wiriness there's a
Pain in the ass, part of Michael Bunting's game
that I think Rod Brendamore is going to be able to relate to.
And when you have Rod Brendamore as your coach,
you know, Hall of Famer, Stanley Cup winner, that sort of thing,
and he's telling you stuff, you're probably going to listen.
Yeah, and like with this deal,
it seems like the Brett Pesci deal in Carolina is more inevitable now
because of, I don't know how they finagle the cap
where they can just sign whoever they want
and it just always seems to work out.
Their genius is over there.
But it looks like somebody's going to have to go from the lineup
just uh fit in bunding and hurricanes fans forgive my ignorance but i'm just looking at uh the left
wingers table taravainen for sure but then center left wing jordan stall played a lot of center
and then we got jordan martinuk who was waived last year stephan nason is a free agent and they
brought in michael bunting there was a very clear need uh for this player patch ready's gone um
he really needed some help on the left wing and they got how many better left wingers are
available this year i i i mean top three available at one point daily face off had michael bunting as
the most appealing free agent available so did frank cerevalli well daily face off so yeah so
hey you know i think uh i think at that point you kind of look at it and go well uh if that is the
case then um carolina just got itself another winner i think they've had a great day well
Orlov and Bunting, not bad.
And if he plays on your top line, we've seen that he's capable of it.
And for Michael Bunting himself as a person,
he had never made over a million dollars per year in the National Hockey League.
This is a dude who didn't peak until he was 42 and a rookie in the National Hockey League.
Good for him getting this giant-ass contract.
It's not a sad day for Toronto fans.
They should be happy that Michael Bunting went out and he earned this contract.
It's a big one for a dude who's worked his way to this level for a long time.
I get the feeling Carolina is not done today.
And I'm assuming that it's Brett Pesci because that was the name that's thrown out there.
But I feel like there's a trade coming.
And maybe it's not today.
Maybe it's a couple days from now.
But it feels like with all the cap space available today, Brett Pesci is the guy that's got to move.
This day could be fascinating because what happened last year, there was all the signings, all the signings.
And then there was a lull.
There was a break.
Nighttime hit.
and Johnny Gaudreau just slapped the hockey world right in the face
with a slobber knocker.
I wonder if it's signings until something like 5 o'clock
and then the trades start creeping in.
We'll see what happens.
He likes country music.
He likes guitars.
And he's not allowed to play in Nashville anymore
because they bought him out.
Matt Duchesne feels like he's been around forever,
but he's younger than you guys.
yeah younger i mean 2009 is forever it is yeah like and he played like right away yeah for me
post lockout is basically my entire career if you want to count my career as when i began my
youtube channel so i began it the year after actually that's not true two years after damn
that was a long time ago right and matt duchesne was in the league that whole time i should say
that this video is brought to you by sports interaction check it out sports interaction
dot com slash sdpn uh make your bet get in on the action with sports interaction now um
matt duchesne has signed a contract with the dallas stars um listen this dallas stars are
already good and they actually this year went from being an all defense team to kind of really
offensive um and matt duchesne i would think fits that perfectly where he doesn't have to be
the guy i mean i don't think we need to complicate this for why it's an amazing deal
tell well tell us why it's uncomplicated and amazing in 71 games he had 22 goals 34 assists
for 56 points he only got three million dollars like so here's here's what i'm trying to figure
out what's going on here are the dudes getting bought out giving discounts because they got
bought out they have so much money in the bank blake wheeler did not need to sign in new york
for what was it 800 he wanted to he wanted to and that duchesne wants to say in the south it's
close enough to national oel oel chilling in florida that can't be a bad time and and here's
the thing i thought oel would be fair market value yeah i don't know if there was much more out there
for him we're probably gonna find out by the end of the day oh yeah someone wanted to give him six
here's what duchesne's thinking guys he's got an incredible team maybe he gets to spend the entire
year setting up jason robertson and then here's here's what's awesome his contract is up the
salary cap is up and he's going to strike it rich next summer i'm trying to find five forward groups
i would take over dallas's it's so difficult i guess you the one one i guess you would say
edmonton that is just not something we would have said a few years right so it's sagan ben
hints who led the world in playoff point crazy so jason robertson mason marchman and now you
add matt duchesne i'm not even including the dawn off in there you know like it's so deep and it
just keeps going then you got like did you tie delandria what did you say why i didn't get down
to wyatt johnson yet and he'd be what their fourth line center yeah it's one of the deepest forward
cores in the entire national hockey league so it's unreal i'm on the center thing say again
hints uh if you have duchesne playing center and then wyatt johnson and you could have tied
delandria as well i mean whatever mix of that you want playing center is fine and you know if
If the Stars can't hang on to Max Domi, who I don't know that they will
because it's $1.3 million left on the cap.
They could always move somebody, but he was a good fit there, too.
I think this is a rental, it seemed like.
Yeah, this team's primed to do it, though, aren't they?
Yeah, especially if, like, I don't know how they're going to play the goaltending situation.
Hopefully, Scott Wedgwood can relief Jake Ottinger a little bit more during the regular season,
and then you keep him ready for the playoffs because it seems like he ran out of gas
by the time the playoffs ran around.
So if you get Jake Ottinger down to, like, low 50s games or, like, high 40s,
they're actually 50-50 and then just run them through the playoffs,
that's going to be so good for them.
Actually, they just locked up their goaltending depth with Matt Murray.
No way!
Sorry?
The other one.
Yeah, so Dallas has a goalie named Matt Murray who is a goalie.
I'm so upset with you right now.
Me too.
He's third on the chart, right?
Because it'd be Ottinger, Wedgwood.
Third or fourth.
Then Murray, yeah.
I don't know.
Maybe fourth.
Guys, I know I'm not supposed to say this.
This is supposed to be a segment about Matt Duchesne in Dallas.
But I was really hoping that the Leafs swung and missed on Ryan O'Reilly,
that they'd maybe try for Matt Duchesne because he's a fast skater
and scores a lot.
And maybe he didn't want to come to Canada.
But it's not, at this point, looking good for the Leafs.
I think there's a region that Matt Duchesne wants to play in.
And other Matt Murray, too.
And it's Central Lower America.
What percent of the NHL is named Connor or Matt?
It's a good question.
Many.
There was a lot of Michaels and Matthews before that.
You know, there's always trendy names.
I don't think going to Toronto and Canada was ever on Dushane's radar.
No.
This dude, he likes playing in the States.
All right.
So Dallas Stars get better.
If that's the only move they make, man, it was a good one.
But we'll see.
Maybe there's a trade coming.
We do think there's got to be trades coming later.
The two teams I would actually pin for a trade most of all,
I think Carolina is primed for a trade,
and I think San Jose with Eric Carlson.
That has to happen within the next couple of days.
Otherwise, he's starting camp there, right?
I could see Arizona moving a fifth.
That guy, that fifth could be a big trade.
Dead cap?
Yeah.
Okay, so it is July 1st, and the Boston Bruins,
despite being over the cap this past year
in the last dance of what we think is their life.
I bet Krejci and Bergeron are back,
but they're operating as if they won't be.
The Boston Bruins have still found room to make moves.
They've spent $7.6 million today, actually.
Wow.
James Van Riemsdyk, 34 years old,
signs for one year, $1 million.
Morgan Geeky, $2 million a year.
uh milan lucic one year one million and uh patrick brown um also signed uh he's the mayor of brand
mayor of brand but also uh eight hundred thousand dollar cap hit so listen let's have kevin
shattenkirk shattenkirk oh and shattenkirk has not been confirmed yet on cap friendly so what
did shattenkirk sign for oh i don't know see this is what we're so okay i know he's going so we know
shattenkirk is going to boston i would assume it's somewhere in between patrick brown and milan
luchich right unless i mean is he gonna get because he doesn't have you know kevin chattenkirk is not
you know radko gutis and eric johnson i could see crazy what do you think 2.25 it's difficult
yeah it's difficult at this point in his career um cap friendly seems to yeah cap friendly has
him on the bruins just no dollar amount yet my guess is around two two five okay okay now i'm
looking at this and i'm seeing um a team that is working around the edges i got the number oh hold
on sportsinteraction.com uh get in the action with sports interaction sportsinteraction.com
slash sdp and flash that graphic let's go jesse so chris johnston reported the number let's go
what are your guesses my number is 1.95 two years 2.25 one year one million dollars what that's a
Great deal.
Kevin Shattenkirk is joining the Bruins on a one-year deal around $1 million.
Wow.
It's going to be like $1.2 or $1.1, somewhere in and around $1.
I thought for the deals that some defensemen, like, okay.
I guess Radko Gudis is a far more useful player than Kevin Shattenkirk.
But is he $3 million more useful than Kevin Shattenkirk?
No, that was one of the bottom feeders weaponizing their cap space to get players and assets.
Because, I mean, he'll be a player for them and then probably an asset.
Yep.
um if they eventually deal whereas the boston bruins are trying to still be relevant
and uh compete i mean this like shattenkirk's basically like a connor clifton i guess sort of
uh replacement um maybe second power play unit behind mcavoy probably ought to be a lot of
right-handers are jvr is a fun bet you know his skating's shot but his shot's not shot
shots pretty good is good put them on just put them on the power play yeah exactly so there's
two guys for your power play right there luchich man we were going through this earlier uh the
atlantic is the punch them up division boston's got luchich leaves have reeves the senators just
signed boko imama um the montreal canadians have arbor jacki the florida panthers um
that's a good point and then uh i'm not uh buffalo doesn't really have a designated guy
eric johnson he's not there does he yeah i know and uh big though detroit doesn't have gavani
smith anymore so i'm not really sure um but man it's a tough division i wouldn't be surprised to
see buffalo and detroit get a couple deterrents uh just to throw at those guys uh every game
oh the one big one and like everyone everyone's been texting me about this i've been having lots
of random conversations today just to see what people say and everyone's like that connor kiki
contract's pretty good it's pretty sweet i like that uh and there's a he's he's a winger slash
center but because of the openings the bruins have at center i i can imagine him playing up
the middle quite a bit i like luci on the bruins and i think just for the vibes i think it's you
know the last couple of years uh they've brought back some guys Krejci and Bergeron obviously
never didn't go anywhere but Krejci took it but Lucic going back and just being able to be himself
without the added scoring pressure is going to be except for when they play the Leafs a lot of fun
to watch well and again remember like why did we make fun of Lucic with the Oilers and with the
Flames that stupid contract making six point whatever seven it's way too much it was always
way too much now he's making a mill and he'll retire a bruin which just feels right since we're
on the hey what are the boston bruins doing they made some signings signings um i'm so interested
to see what happens with jeremy swayman he's an rfa uh they qualified him so i don't know where
that contract lands on a team that's so hurt for cap space i think he might get dealt because they
have which is fascinating i'm here for that they have bussy bussy bucey i don't know he's bussing
b-u-s-s-i is he bussing he might be bussing into the nhl next year if they have to trade jeremy
swayman yeah so i don't know are we is a jeremy swayman trade incoming i oh i can't imagine excited
for tonight and tomorrow because a lot of work has got done today and almost every major name
is off the board at this point like who's left tyler bertuzzi who's that's gonna be a big hole
on the bruins dude had 10 points in seven games they still lost uh max domi is still out there
um all the buyout guys got scooped up oel got scooped up dushane got scooped up wheeler got
scooped up bunting's gone canes tase it tarasenko tarasenko clingberg uh de brin cat is a rfa
uh matt matt doesn't count you got to trade him matt dumb is a ufa uh josh bailey was bought out
uh semi and varlamov uh although i've heard that he there is a deal in place it just hasn't been
done yet uh tatar goss despair cologne uh i know that one's a big one cologne was one i know tampa
really worked to try to keep them another one that i'm interested in i want to see what um
what seattle does with uh eric carlson because vince dunn is an rfa and i want to know what
that extension looks like so you're creeping into trades though yeah i know i know yeah signings
kerfoot ufa signing shut up jt confer kerfoot the biggest deal out there yeah where will the feet
land i mean based on so it's it's kind of funny how has he been with the team that long and that's
the first time we've ever said that god oh my god piece of crap no he deserves to be bullied for
that um it's there it is first time in jesse's life he's been bullied i was a loser in high
school oh i believe it max domi is also available and here here's another one depth scoring which
the leafs need kaylor yamamoto yeah but again like we're talking depth depth depth depth second
line maybe yeah they're a first liner who's gonna sign you interested in lara zeller nope total
back i mean yeah yeah like third fourth line yeah i don't know listen there's some names on that
board and there are going to be some teams that are a little desperate there aren't okay there's
some names on the board but there aren't names that are holding up trades no one's going whoa
whoa whoa let wait we can't do the eric carlson trade until we know where lara zeller is going
or john klingberg you know or john klingberg
all right is there a team out there going if we don't get eric carlson we'll go out and sign
john klingberg john klingberg has been a ufa for the last eight years because he keeps fumbling
his free agency so all i'm saying i feel bad for the dude we've seen almost enough today
to know that tomorrow is going to be nuts we're going to get all the trades that we should have
cotton at the draft and didn't first time in what was it 16 years since 2007 they went with a full
first round with no trade the free agency before i started lfr was the last time there were no
trades on draft day oh i'm so happy we streamed for three and a half hours me too me too me too
that's that's why i don't have a voice today on saturday so when this deal was announced
Steve Dangle was visibly upset
and frustrated and hit the wall.
No, he hit the floor.
He put a dent in our hardwood
at our new building.
I'm losing my voice, so I'm trying not to scream.
Don't forget, it's brought to you by Sports Interaction.
Get in on the action, which the Leafs have not
with Sports Interaction. Maybe they should call
Sports Interaction. Sportsinteraction.com
slash S-D-P-N. Now,
here's the deal. Three years,
two million per, Nolichari
reunites with Kyle Dubas in
Pittsburgh. What a great pickup
for the pittsburgh penguins i mean he's he's what this team needs he's what every team needs
um i'm trying to look it up right now i believe he led the playoffs in hits heading into the
stanley cup final the leafs notably did not make the third round i mean they barely made the second
round when you really look back on it um three years is good two mil is good on a day where a
lot of bad deals get signed and that's every free agency that's kyle dubas doing uh pretty good work
and i you know free agency was a strength of his in toronto um finding bargain deals it was just
usually with players who are historically underappreciated and i don't think that's who
no i think everybody very much fully appreciates what nola charry brings and i think that he's
going to fit in well with a veteran group in pittsburgh that that needed a little bit more
toughness they just they just got pushed around which is surprising considering that running the
team last year was brian burke and ron hextall two of the haughtiest guys out there who were you know
just snap at you but they didn't really have that urge to the dubious who got them a charge yeah i
got your hit stats what do you got he finished the playoffs fourth in hits he had 78 uh ahead
of in was keegan colasar sam bennett and radko gudas who finished with 91 all of those players
played in the final yeah so he would have been uh right up there by the time the leafs got
eliminated who was the closest player to not make the final uh hockinpah and and 65 65 and charlie
had 78 oh my god i will miss him and hockinpah went an extra round you know they went to the
third round so yeah great hit stats from nola charlie that will no longer belong to the toronto
maple leaf and what do the leafs do now so it's okay i know i know pens fans make this about the
leafs but oh it's about the leafs because he left it's highly relevant to the leafs because
what was the line that they put together that essentially helped get them over the hump
against tampa they put together a line of three newcomers ryan o'reilly nola chari and uh matthew
nice the dude heading into that series the dude who played the most games as a member of the
toronto maple east was nola charlie i'm pretty sure uh because ryan o'reilly had the injury
uh ryan o'reilly nola charlie and matthew nice here's the depth chart for the leafs as i have
it right now right now at this time of day do you want me to do this no i think you should wait you
want to you want to do a whole thing on this i want you to do the whole okay do you want to do
Can I do their bottom six?
Okay, time stamp it.
Do the Nola Chari relevant info.
Yeah, because I want, this is a good thing.
Do that line.
How about this?
Their third line in the playoffs,
Matthew Nyes, Ryan O'Reilly, Nola Chari.
Right now I have it as Bobby McMahon on the left,
David Kampf in the middle, Sam Lafferty on the right.
Strong.
Listen, if there's a word I have for you
Pittsburgh Penguins fans as a Leaf fan,
jealousy i love nola chari love what he brings good for you that's a great pickup and uh man
you could just see him ending up with like imagine having to play him and like gino malkin on the
same line yeah and is this another string in dubious takes x leafs because we have we have
one leaf signing it's not to the it's not to the penguins it's to the devils steve you want to read
it out uh x leafs eric shelvin went to the devil oh sorry i misread it i thought it said dallas
that's why i was confused oh no my bad yeah eric shelgren to uh the devil's one year 775 there's
another leaf out the door but is is kyle dubas gonna pick up more leafs do you think there's a
fresh alex kerfoot it's still on the market you could use versatility in your forwards for a good
price i sure hope he does oh well okay i sure hope dubas does for all of us kicking kerfoot
out the door take a look at that third line i just mentioned and uh i don't know maybe they
could use them well congratulations to the pittsburgh penguins congratulations to nola
chari and by the way when the cap goes up four million next year and four million the year after
that is going to be just a little blip he's a useful player that's a great contract center
wing oh everything who is trivia question the highest paid anaheim duck and before you answer
it before you answer it i just want to let you know this video is brought to you by sports
interaction get in the action with sports interaction sports interaction.com slash sdpn
19 plus please play responsibly go ahead and answer the question the highest paid Anaheim duck
uh I think it was Adam Henrik but now I think it's Alex Killorn incorrect Alex Killorn is the
third highest paid duck name the other two Henrik nope oh Henrik's not even Klingberg made seven
nope no I'm saying currently under contract right now John Gibson nope there's somebody who makes
100 grand more on the ducks i know i that's why i'm throwing this at you oh i have no idea cam
fowler oh 6.5 million bucks uh anyway i just thought i'd let you know the ducks have not
spent a ton of money and alex colorn is a lot of money 33 years old signs a four-year contract
6.25 million dollars throughout this is another one where uh just like with radko gudis a little
bit earlier today a bad team going we got some young players coming in and we need some players
who know how to play hockey at the nhl level i mean wow it's we're starting to see how good
conor bedard is and i know you're going steve where on earth are you getting where are you
going with this i'm interested who's supposed to go first overall next year leo dangle not quite
Not yet.
Oh, he's a little ways away.
I don't know.
And that's the thing.
Conor Bedard's been going first overall for two years, at least.
So everyone tanked and was as bad as possible.
The Ducks got very close.
They got Leo Carlson.
Which is still pretty good.
That'll do.
What have they added?
Topness.
Extremely overpriced meat.
Radko Gudis will beat you up.
and alex cologne will beat the hell out of the front of your net so listen one one thing that
was talked about with the ducks is other than the vibes being the opposite of immaculate
they got pushed around too much uh cologne his numbers weren't great in tampa but he had a very
specific role there right and that was to be a big net front presence guy now he
went through a very long stretch of not scoring um i think it was not scoring a power play goal
with tampa it was something like 30 games um but it's tampa and their power play still scored
and i'm willing to bet he was a part of that i think he probably picked up some daryl boyce
assists um just standing in front of the goalie taking their eyes away despite not touching the
puck so there's all the good things with him six years is madness yes that takes him till he's 39
yes 6.25 it would be it would be crazy if it's six years but it's not six years it's four years
oh drew originally said six years yeah it's four years four years four years is six to five no
madness but who cares not quite as bad as 637 hard mile body too probably i i think i saw ryan
hannah from the uh the wing wheel podcast who i agree with a lot uh uh say something along the
lines of if you're signing a contract and part of your selling point is yeah we could trade it
uh then it's probably not a great contract and that is uh most free agency contracts it's like
okay you sign this but with a hard cap system that may or may not go out from season to season
how do you get out from it alex cologne for me isn't a problem with how bad this anaheim team is
until maybe year three of this deal and at that point the cut the salary cap could be 90 to 95
million bucks it it seems okay if they're still trying to suck for a while yes and i think that's
you don't think so well because i think i think they are they were so bad last year what i should
say is they don't the bar for the bottom of the league is higher than it was last year last year
a bunch of teams tried to bottom out there's no cap we have a chance of bedard and if we don't
get bedard we can get carlson and if we don't get carlson we can get um fantilli if we don't
get fantilli we can get reinbacker if we don't get reinbacker we can get mitch gov and so on
there were some crazy names at the top of this draft usually there's at least some buzz heading
into next year's draft there's none there's none this year and it's not that it's going to be bad
it's just the same star power isn't available so that being said the teams at the bottom don't
need to try as hard to be bad so but the the the sharks the blackhawks the ducks all those
teams were they were at the bottom could still finish probably 10 points higher than they did
this year and finish bottom three right right so it makes sense the rebuilds not over in anaheim
It's still a long ways to go, I think is the point.
And if that's the case, then the numbers on the contract don't matter.
You have a lot of young players to protect.
At that time, when you're running around with Zekras,
you're ready to go with him and the rest of the core there,
then you're fine with this number.
Then by the time the sour cap will be up,
the contract will hopefully be expiring by then.
And then your second line winger, maybe if he's third line by then,
making $6 million doesn't affect you as much.
But right now, in a vacuum, if this is just any team and you're paying Kalorn $6 million for four years, that's a ridiculous overpay.
But in the context of the Anaheim Ducks, it's fine.
The money doesn't matter.
You're not trying to be good.
It's a difficult – the world three, four years from now is a difficult world for us to picture.
The cap will be higher.
Yeah, but that's their job to project these things.
and if they need to spend some money
and get in a good talent and overpay for it
for Killorn to go to a team that's this bad
after winning all those Stanley Cups,
like, you need to overpay for that.
And he got termed to make him stick around
and to get there.
And it's okay for the Ducks
because they're not trying to be good.
I like it too.
Good for the Ducks.
Hey, they're going out there.
They're making their fans excited about something.
Hey, they've got more money to spend, by the way.
The Anaheim Ducks are rarely ever a cap team,
but they have 28 million bucks that they could spend.
So whoever they want, they could, yes.
After those deals, they have $28 million they can spend.
Anyway, well, we'll see.
Maybe we'll do another video about them this afternoon
as we continue to follow free agency.
Listen, people in Pittsburgh should be thrilled about Noel Achari.
But when they saw the contract for Tristan Jari,
they were like, whoa, I am jarried by that.
You see?
Sports Interaction, by the way, is sponsoring this video for some reason.
I don't know, after a lead line like that was pretty terrible.
sportsinteraction.com slash sdpn19 plus please play responsibly steve are you drawing on my
hand what are you doing what are you right oh it's a little hurts because i thought you did
a great job thank you steve now tristan jari at 5.375 million dollars uh i saw a pittsburgh fan
tweet because i actually saw a tweet you guys my rate limit was unacceded and then exceeded again
uh they said kyle dubas was really cooking until this pittsburgh fans are hot and cold on tristan
jari he was 24 13 and 7 last year with a 909 safe percentage and a 290 goals against average
what is tristan jari and is this overpaying or is this is this good so he did you know tristan
jari was an all-star as a rookie i do seem to remember that i talked to him in st louis
the 1920 season he had a 921 safe percentage then he went down to a 909 the next year which
was probably around league average maybe just above and you go oh that's not as good but
whatever increased responsibility then he goes to 919 and you go there's tristan jari there he is
he's back last year he was a 909 which to me isn't the problem because i think league average was 904
again above average goalie
5 375 for five years you should be better than that if he's a 915 goalie though that's in a way
year that's that's great but he's been up there now if he is that here is what is key with him
pittsburgh's most important games over the last three years he's probably been their worst player
that is true which or not healthy for them or not healthy it's one of the most mystifying things
i've watched as an outsider so like i had the uh the playoff numbers in front of me
he only played one game in 1920 he had a 952 i mean one game 2021 was that nightmare series
against the islanders that the penguins there was no good reason for them to lose the series
he was an 887 or sorry 888 um i'm undercutting him a little bit and then he only played one game
last year um 867 wasn't good in that game now to be fair he didn't allow a single goal in the
playoffs this year because they didn't make the playoffs because in that must win game against
the chicago blackhawks someone let him off his leash and he went for a little walk around the
neighborhood he's a mystifying goalie well here's what here's what i say kyle dubas said he wanted
to extend him when he got there obviously he's gotten that done and when you're what a kyle
dubas is guys what happens steve what do we know about kyle dubas what do we always say oh don't
make me yell it okay you don't have to say here you gotta help me okay kyle dubas loves his guy
he loves his guys so he's gonna make his money if this contract is anywhere if tristan jari is
a 909 to a 914 save percentage right he was a 909 last year this contract's fine fine but i think
pittsburgh penguins fans are at the point with tristan jari where they're just sometimes tired
of seeing his jersey we have uh more information that changes this whole conversation what changed
what happened the pittsburgh penguins also signed nedeljkovic they just inked him to a 1.5 million
dollar deal for one season so now the penguins have a throuple they have tristan jari casey
Dismith and Alex Ndelkevich.
I like that.
I actually like that.
It is considering...
So what does Dismith make?
1.8.
Yeah, they're trading him.
You think that's who's out the door?
Well, I mean, Jari wasn't good.
Dismith was worse.
He can also be buried in the minors.
I don't know what the penalty is for that,
but he can always be sent down.
About half a mil.
Okay.
Wait, who?
Dismith?
Yeah.
Yeah, about half a mil.
I mean, it could be Ndelkevich.
Right.
But you just sign him.
you think your ufa is probably going to be your backup there well dubas is uh wow those are some
really interesting swings in that the amount of years that they gave jari is the biggest question
mark for me that's why i don't like this deal i like the number but i don't like the five years
it's such an unknown for five years for jari i would have loved to see that come in maybe at
three even at two would have been what that'd be great but i don't think you'd get them at two but
three would have been my max and five is a lot i wonder if they another suitor yeah or yeah did
they you know did they check around the market and go everything else is too but still a young
player he's been working on this he's 28 he's been working on this deal since he got there you know
and this is what you land that it's not it's not my best piece of work from dubas well it's not my
favorite piece of work we shall see how it works out uh we'll give him a pass because nolichari's
deal is so good um well b minus yeah b i can't wait for your post free agent grades the free
agency grades all right nedeljkovic had a 9 12 in 26 games in grand rapids uh when when he was
with detroit in 15 games he was an 895 so that's really interesting swing from kyle yeah we'll see
what goaltending has been one of pittsburgh's biggest issues and they haven't put a lot of
confidence into their fan base with these two moves wow whoa feel free to quote anonymous
nhl exec kyle dubas is having the worst july one of any nhl gm
is that what somebody just texted you yep no charlie's good
yeah but uh sorry they ended it with wtf is that charlie deal oh okay yeah it's a lot that is i
didn't put out a feeler i got that i got that out of thin air wow that's great okay thank you
thank you um should we should we add on is there another there's another pittsburgh move what do
we got ryan graves oh what do you guys think ryan graves signed two million how many years
six years whoa what what how much 1.5 adam i said two i gotta stick with two that text
is hella accurate 4.5 million dollars ryan graves no disrespect to ryan graves but
he must have been he must have fallen off his chair kyle pittsburgh nabbed one of the top
free agent defenseman in ryan graves signing the former devil to a six-year contract with an annual
average value of 4.5 million dollars he is 6 5 220 pounds so he's big holy cow rear highs and
points the last two years 28 and 26 um take away kyle's credit card he has a spending problem
the term on that deal
I mean
Steve you have his stats in front of you
he's more than stats obviously
eight goals yeah defenders are
much harder to analyze on
hockey DB but eight goals
very good for a defender 18 assists
26 points was pretty good
in 10 games in the playoffs he had
one assist that was it no goals
um in fact he's been on a couple uh every playoff run he's been on he's played in more than 10 games
uh two goals eight assists for 10 points in those runs he was he was uh oh i was about to say he was
part of the colorado run but no he was not he was traded yeah um he was good for new jersey these
playoffs like he was decent but not this price so isn't it funny that whoa brian burke and ryan
hextall leave excuse me and kyle dubas who still hasn't hired a gm by the way yeah who still hasn't
hired well he's the intern gm yeah he hired or he signs the nhl leader in shots in the playoffs
who or sorry hits in the playoffs who didn't make the stanley cup final and six foot five ryan
graves to probably six years yes this is what was the number 4.5 six years
i don't you guys there's not a lot of commentary going on you begin to how do you begin to even
analyze that like what do you even say so okay here's where i'm at okay 4.5 right now
is a lot but what i've been saying all day is term actually makes me feel better about deals
not like that though i mean we talked about alex calorn in a more positive light that doesn't have
ryan graves because alex calorn's not on a team that's trying to win remember he told us at the
press conference i'm keeping the core together where have you heard that before you have sydney
crosby every year that you have sydney crosby you have to try and win a stanley cup this is him
trying to win all right well i mean every if you need more evidence every gm values every player
differently yeah and dubas took a big old swing on ryan graves i mean six years to me means there
were way more suitors um dubas isn't afraid to do a long-term deal yeah in in fact he probably
is even though pittsburgh is not in the greatest cap situation um like you still don't have the
albatrosses like the dudes making double digits on that team so maybe he has more flexibility
to sign guys to longer deals but that is uh i don't know he's also gonna be in there it's risky
when he's gonna be in their top four you know if if anything might be on the first pair you know
he might be with letang maybe so if it's letang and graves and they're competitive then you
understand 4.5 you could okay that's fair is he a bad player no no not at all is it an overpay
maybe a little that's what today is about you sign good players to too much money
that is most teams best case scenario it is rare to sign good players for not enough money
on free agency day it just very rarely happens unless the player wants it right and if you found
your top pairing defenseman to play along with the tang for uh your shot at the playoffs then
can you text back anonymous nhl executive and just ask him what if he saw the graves deal and
what he thinks uh what do you yeah he already texted me he gave raves or he gave ryan graves
six question mark exclamation mark three question marks okay we'll wrap it up there this is a lot
of years a lot of years listen it's almost as long as his contract with the penguins we'll see who
lasts longer listen if there's anything i know about hockey it's that you simply can't have
enough swedish guys named william on your team no if i know anything about hockey you can never
have enough noted Alan Walsh client William Lagasin has joined the Toronto Maple Leafs we'll
tell you about him in a second but first the video is brought to you by Sports Interaction
getting on the action like the Leafs finally have uh with William Lagasin you go to sports
interaction.com slash sdp and 19 plus please play responsibly and of course William Lagasin who is
uh you know been he was an Edmonton draft pick in 2014 started playing for the team in 1920 a little
bit of weird development there because of the covid thing but um he uh most recently played a
few games in montreal last year at the nhl level and i can tell you this um who was the head coach
in edmonton before their current head coach uh oh no he's on the kings now mclellan tom mclellan
no not tom mclellan after todd mclellan but before jay woodcroft oh no i can picture him yeah he was
the coyotes head coach i can't i can't remember his name either oh what what are we doing here
guys oilers head coaches history why do i keep it huh tip it dave tippett i thought you were
doing trivia no i wasn't i i was just hoping somebody would know dave tippett uh was the
first guy to sort of play him and uh william lagason flourished under jay woodcroft in the
ahl level like absolutely uh had a great time but the way tippett wanted things done at edmonton
didn't work out um and you know when you sign a guy like william lagas and six two you probably
a lot of people probably are not familiar with him uh he's a guy that um i would expect is going
to be depth on this team why hasn't he been on agent provocateur that's a good question why
hasn't he been on agent provocateur you were on the show there he is going to be um he is going
to be depth on the leafs but there's a guy there that you know throughout the season you need
bodies right yes well and the leafs need bodies like this signing is actually more important to
the leafs than i think most realize um and you know that's not me going for one of alan's guys
here's here's the long and short of it riley brody mccabe lilligren giordano timmons so
brad for living has already been open about wanting to rework that decor let's say that's
the decor they go into the season with who are there three they only have three non-roster
forwards signed to nhl contracts this is from cap friendly.com they have three non on the leafs
roster contracts for defensemen i have no idea toby niemela uh-huh who i believe has not played
his first full season in north america yet he just got here last year yep miko kokanen
and william villeneuve so we're an injury away from most likely miko kokanen being in the lineup
right no not yet um and last year how many defensemen did they use like it was a million
it was yeah philip crawl mac hollowell victor i think they got up to 12 jordy ben um yeah a lot
of guys right so william lagason they he'd straight up need more d uh they got one he had
the best year of his professional career last year um as a defenseman on the chicago wolves in 65
games he had 10 goals um 22 assists and 32 points and it's hard to believe that he had 10 goals in
65 games because he's played 60 nhl games zero goals i got a question for you i want him to
scores first here so noted first goal yeah lagasin uh lagasin signs with the leafs uh by the way
another alan walsh client jonathan drew him to the colorado avalanche good good project there
maybe he regained some form and uh provides them some depth scoring and he for sure has wheels
my question to you is guys we're pushing five o'clock on july 1st what do you give uh brad
living out of 10 uh 2.5 what over four years yeah like you look at you look at the contracts
he signed comp uh lagason and uh and reeves and i i'm gonna pull lagason from this because he's
a depth piece you expect reeves to be in the lineup most nights you expect comp to be in the
lineup every night he's played every one of the last 164 games in the regular season guys never
hurt in incredible shape um if nola chari costs you two million bucks a year for three years
why is he not a leaf i can only assume either he didn't want to be here or bradshaw living
is not that good at this okay dude nola chari was absolutely fantastic what do you think we've heard
a couple of times is that the william neil and eric's tension has been holding thing up things
up because they've been so far apart in the number that they think willie should get uh versus what
his camp wants that they're really unsure about how to move forward with the cap situation because
what's coming down from the top down is that you should bring back all four and you should sign
them all long term and if they're in negotiations to do that and they can't get it done things are
kind of backlogged so my suggestion is if william nylander's number is holding holding you up um
worry about it later july 1st is today and as much as you can go over the cap yeah as much as
i want william nylander to be a toronto maple leaf that might be a contract that doesn't get
signed till november right but they were trying to get it done pre this date so a lot of their
oxygen has been taken up with that contract because of the con of the no movement clauses
that kicked in today right is that an excuse so now that is that okay now that this deadline has
past maybe there's a little bit more room for the bigger leafs deals to trickle in as the hours and
days move on from july 1st i uh i don't want to be salty um we're all huge william neilander fans
on this podcast i have absolutely no interest in double digit willie i have no interest in a
management group that makes excuses that oh we couldn't get william neilander locked up so we
were unprepared for july nothing and we're all i know apparently they're they're working on max
stomi might be might be pitching tyler bertuzzi i'm working on being less than 200 pounds get on
it i was that how's that journey going i like that not great it's going about as well as the
leaf journey okay that's not true i think i'd be comfortable at 250 all right guys it's getting
a little bit late in the afternoon on july 1st the leafs have not done much of consequence we'll
continue to follow it so keep checking ilia sorokin and pierre engvall have re-signed with
the new york islanders one of them won't shock you one of them will uh this video is brought to
you by sports interaction get in on the action right now with sports interaction sports interaction
dot com slash sdpn 19 plus please play responsibly if i asked you to put a two dollar steve bet
on Ilya Sorokin signing an eight-year deal
or Engvall signing an eight-year deal,
who are you putting your $2 bet on this?
Probably Sorokin.
Wow.
Best goalies in the NHL.
You would have been correct.
Ilya Sorokin, $66 million,
$8.25 million a year.
That is a...
It's pretty reasonable.
And you know what?
He's been spectacular
within that New York Islander system.
Sometimes you find a system,
And I'm not saying I'm not taking anything away from Sorokin, the goalie.
But sometimes as a goalie, you find your happy place and you should just stay in it.
And that deal doesn't kick in until the 2024-25 season.
Right.
He's under contract this year for $4 million.
This is a contract extension that he was eligible for.
So they get him in 2023 for less than Vasilevsky signed for.
And Vasilevsky was believed to be a discount.
Yes.
Yes.
Everyone was getting double digits and stuff.
That was right around when Price got it, Bobrovsky got it.
I got to tell you, if you're going to spend a ton,
it should be on your team's most important player.
How much of that extension includes bonuses?
Is the answer none?
The answer is none.
Why would you say that with Lou Lamorello?
Lou Lamorello, buddy.
Does not like bonuses.
Now, are you getting that from Cat Friendly?
or a tweet because sometimes the bonuses just aren't loaded in oh okay all right it takes time
for them to get all of the cap details they usually just go the aav for now but but we don't
know he doesn't like bonuses for some reason i don't understand why uh the other thing is pierre
engvall i told you about the two dollar bet on an eight-year contract what about a two dollar bet on
a seven-year deal i don't think anybody would have taken it yet here we are seven years 21 million
that means three million bucks a year for pierre engvall until probably he retires now i don't i
don't hate it i don't hate it either yeah i think it's a good idea after my initial reaction i don't
either yeah everyone watching is gonna say that's stupid again the theme of today i gotta override
my brain i gotta change something in there term is usually the risk yep the risk now is no term
like for the team yes we know this is a good deal for engel yeah he's got 21 million dollars
for a dude who was healthy scratched i think as recently as last year yep um you know so we know
it's a good deal for him for the islanders three million even three years justin hall a right shot
defenseman is making more than pierre engel and i have to say this uh as much as i got tired of
pierre engel and watching him there's a lot of people in the advanced stats community that are
big fan to him and and he does bring some things he's in incredible shape but he's a big for nothing
player he's like he's enormous and we'll do nothing with his size zero dog in him makes zero
room on the ice zero dog yeah he's got that he's got that not dog in him and it's it's no he's he's
the ideal uh dog shelter no dogs if pierre engvall ever reaches his full potential or at least like
90 percent of what he can be this deal is an unbelievable steal and i think that's a fair
bet to make when you're in a position like the islanders a lot of plays die on his stick
and that's a good thing um i actually think he's a far better stylistic match for the new york
islanders than he was for the leafs he's honestly zero hyperbole one of the fastest players in the
league yeah yeah um takes a bizarre path to the puck sometimes but he's able to make up for it
with this giant gallop i'd like to see him drive the net though with the power he's one of the
best skaters on the team and yeah and good penalty killer he's a good puck handler as well i want to
see him drive the net with that size if they can get him to do that and by the way nobody's been
able to get him to do that not the marley's not the leafs not 20 only one organization has had
a crack at him that's the thing he went to new york and it's the smallest sample size 18 games
he impressed he was half a point a game five goals nine points five goals nine points in 18 games is
not bad he also showed up in the playoffs uh he was a good piece for them didn't put up as many
points but he was a factor and i think he impressed them in the short time he was there and this is
the second organization that's gonna get a crack at opening up pierre angvall and getting him to
use his body and if they can do that three million dollars is a great price for this player if he can
minimize his mistakes a little bit because he is prone to them um still a really shift in and
shift out really responsible player i think um especially with the way the salary cap's going
you're right term is to the team's benefit this year previously term meant risk now term means
certainty and three million dollar peer engvall when that's three percent of the cap in about
four years because right if the cap goes up the way we're expecting the money's going the money
goes up the way we're expecting barring some pandemic we're talking about a salary cap in
five years that's pushing 100 million bucks is this in four years the equivalent to like a two
million dollar player like i think so then in terms of like cap percentage so at that number
in if you're projecting down the line this contract only gets better as we go along three
million in your bottom six is justifiable um if they're really good at their job
at seven years i don't know if that's where the islanders plan on playing them
that dude was getting first and second line opportunities before getting kicked off
um really really really fascinated to see what happens here he's a guy i've been high on a guy
i've been low on um a guy i'll cheer for i'm curious do you think they use them mostly on
the wing because size on the wing is important but they got horvat nelson and jg padjoe and then
And, of course, Zizekas on the fourth line.
No one's moving him off that.
I always kind of, whenever the Leafs used him at center,
I kind of liked it.
At fourth line center anyway.
I think he did third line a few times, and it wasn't very good.
Honestly, I think he played his best hockey as a Leaf
on the right wing with David Kampf.
He can play all three forward positions, which is a bonus.
Good for them.
Good for the Islanders.
Sorokin deal.
Fantastic.
That one's unreal.
Good for them.
Wow.
Tidy business by Lou.
Usually when Lou Lamorello signs a long-term contract, it's a story.
But this is actually pretty normal.
Well, the last guy he signed in seven years was Zaitsev,
so hopefully this goes a little better.
That expired this summer, I think.
Time flies.
Expired today.
I'm pretty sure that expired today.
Sometimes when a player moves on,
it makes an opportunity for another player,
and that other player happens to be a UFA the following year
and makes a lot of money.
That person is JT Comfer, and he can thank Nazem Qadri for that.

Jesse was in the airport.
Oh, my God.
I'm going to put some money on black.
Here we go.
And he won.
How many in a row did you win?
We don't need to go into that.
We'll talk about it on the podcast.
It was a lot.
JT Comfort benefited from Nazem Qadri being an unrestricted free agent
and has just signed a five-year deal,
which pays him $5.1 million per season.
Not too bad for a guy that I think most passing NHL fans
could not even have named beforehand.
He, in more games this past season,
he had one less goal than he did the year before.
He did have 20 more assists, though.
So he's coming off a career year, 52 points.
this is a guy who's been at it for like a long time how old is he he's 28 feels like he's been
in the league longer feels like he's been waiting for a breakout longer and sometimes it's great
when you break out right when your contract's ending yes yeah and it was this is what detroit
needs right they needed a second line center and that's what jt confer is going to be because
i don't know how happy they are with andrew cop being their second line center so you get an
upgrade there you move them down a little and well you can swap them yeah yeah now the three highest
paid forwards are all centers which which is maybe the way it should be which is ideal yeah uh larkin
cop con for i mean larkin's the closest they have to top end talent there and i and he's also the
youngest you could do worse than that trio yeah i don't hate it it's deep now one thing i want to
say is there have been some i that okay the reimer signing's fine it's not gonna it's fine for the
ring wings are we sure about detroit uh in the signings today well okay so you know what signing
we didn't mention and producer drew was begging us to but now we finally have an excuse daniel
sprung one year you don't love two million you love i i love i love the day there's another guy
who the one the one criticism i think you can give stevie y for today is that's two players
with confer and sprung where he's bought high also well and no three and he just alex lion
oh well you can't buy higher than that well but he only paid 900 grand for alex line 900 grand
for lion it's a variable contract two million for sprung one year that's fine you don't worry
about that confer is the one where you better be right but here's where here's where i'm i'm
I'm still trying to figure out what Steve Eisenman's doing because they were
in on to Bryncat.
Apparently to Bryncat's agents been given the opportunity to speak to teams
about an extension,
Bruce Gary act from the Ottawa sun who has his viewpoint has said that,
you know,
no team is offering what the senators are.
But apparently the cost to get to Bryncat in and the term of the contract
would have been too much for the,
for Eisenman.
And my question is with Justin Hall at 3.4 million,
JT Comfort,
5.1 million,
Daniel Sprong at 2 million.
forgot about alex lion at just under a million so we're closing in on 10 million bucks paul's
really still in the division yeah would you take all of those guys or alex to bring cat
uh they need and they could still do both by the way they've got 13 million bucks left to spend
right why why can't they still do to bring it i like comfor for them uh so i don't mind that
but i mean if you're a red wings fan i mean how are you not enticed by to bring it
now the one thing i'll say uh on that front is they have 14 forwards listed on cap friendly
six defensemen which is fine but three goalies so they'll get a little more wiggle room there
somewhere lion going down i assume lion if you send reimer down you got to bury him yes
yes this is the thing like it's a i'm not i'm not saying that they're not better i'm not i'm
just saying how much difference did they get for their 10 million the the yamamoto and coston deals
were also interesting because they chose to not sign them you after acquiring their rights for
future consideration they did they so they let both of their um they didn't give them qualifying
deals yeah yamamoto's gone but they did sign cost into a two-year deal oh they did yeah okay at two
million okay um i like that deal i man i didn't think the oilers made a lot of sense uh getting
rid of them ken holland said he was negotiating against the khl no khl team was offering close
to two million dollars for clem costin no way i think that's just an easy excuse yeah it might
have been a an agent trying to get out of edmonton too yeah it could be maybe just didn't want to be
there anymore uh you never know okay that's that's a little different that they that they
sign cost and i like that move they're they're like listen i'm looking i don't see a ton of
top end talent but they're deep and you can probably count on a comeback season from lucas
raymond you know there's there's a lot to like about what detroit's got going on i'm asking
with the signings today though clint cost and i like daniel sprung i like justin hall contract
i'll be on the record i don't like it um and i'm just not sure about jt confer how much better did
the detroit get today especially when you're paying cop already at 5.6 this is what i'm saying
i don't i'm not crazy about this this is for the hockey parents i'm gonna stare right down the
barrel of the camera for this one raise the centerman do you have a kid who shoots right-handed
they play defense now
why is it so hard i want to play a left wing i want to play sit you play defense or you get out
of my house why is it so hard to find i don't know but justin hall got 3.4 for multiple years
and that's wild do you have a right-handed child defense my my computer just reset when you bang
the table oh no oof the nhl uh doesn't it broke nhl.com all right well listen that's uh
congratulations to jt conference a great amount of money that's a great amount of term and listen
and it gives the Red Wings a little bit of stability going forward.
More like John Blingberg, am I right?
That's not good.
I have never been less.
Blingberg, because he's making a lot of money.
I've never been less in the mood to joke about this.
John Blingberg.
Sportsinteraction.com slash SDPN.
Get in on the action with Sports Interaction.
Hey, the Leafs got in on the action.
We've been asking them to do it.
But a lot of people are saying, not like that.
Not like that.
Please don't do that.
Now, listen, John Klingberg brings one thing, and it's offense.
And the Leafs did need puck-moving defensemen,
because I think that the last Leafs regime, which is still mostly in place,
believed that they had that with players like Justin Hall.
They didn't.
So they need that.
But the problem here is that John Klingberg's defense,
relatively speaking over the last few years,
has been so bad that the offense can't outstrip
what the defense, you know, takes away.
And so, and here's the thing,
you got to remember with John Klinkberg's stats too,
he was on a lifeless, emotionless,
boneless, brainless, crappy, terrible Ducks team.
Only for part of the season.
Okay.
And then he was okay in Minnesota.
And then he went to Minnesota and he was all right.
In a good system.
In a good system.
The Leafs defense has gotten better.
anytime you can get a guy who had a defenseman who had 42 points in 70 games even if he's bad
at defense you got to lock him up to four million dollars oh sorry those were eric gustafson's
numbers uh john klingberg had 33 points uh nine fewer points than eric gustafson in 67 games and
both guys were traded no eric gustafson went off in washington yep the the leafs woke him up he
had no goals they allowed him to get a hat trick and he went off can i also ask what's wrong with
timothy lilligran uh what's wrong with timothy lilligran is he decidedly lost his job to justin
hall at the end of the season and there was no logical argument against it he was terrible he
was bad he was bad but like he won't be bad he doesn't deserve this shot that klingberg's gonna
get no okay okay that's fair okay and i say i'm asking the question i say that as someone who
as probably as late as march last year said lilligren was the leafs best right-handed
defender because he was it was him justin hall connor timmons that was the race what about tj
brody shoots left plays right shoots left he was playing a lot of left last season so lilligren
i mean was briefly their number one right-handed defenseman he's now knocked down to number two
um that right side is still a world to hurt now though riley brody we talked about this earlier
riley brody mccabe clingberg giordano lillard you got it wrong riley clingberg all offense
let's go let the horses out of the cage you are i mean all your defense pair like that'd be great
they love having brody play on the left yep you know like brody's brody can play either side but
like or with jake mccabe or with mccabe on the they're not the biggest fan of riley brody
so i don't know i think riley klingberg will get a shot here
so i don't want to judge too too harshly because you know brad treliving identified the defense
as something he wanted to change up and i don't think signing john klingberg and
william lagasin was that um i'm sorry i can't help but look at this team on paper and and think
this stinks like here's dude here's the closest thing the lease have had to john klingberg in
recent years and it super didn't work tyson berry um so that dynamic where they literally
out of the kindness of their hearts put berry on the top power play when sheldon keef gone in there
to help him get his mojo back um that was the only time barry was useful at all he wasn't good
defensively um so like in what universe is john klingberg gonna play second power play
what percent of his career has he been on the second power play when he was productive almost
none and you got morgan riley making seven and a half this is the thing you know we saw this with
tyson berry in toronto and they had to pull morgan riley was coming off a 72 point season they go out
and get tyson berry and they can't get berry going part of that's mike babcock and but then keith
comes in takes over and goes listen morgan we gotta pull you off the pp1 because we gotta get
i know and i sorry what i'm trying to get to is i wonder what has changed in this management group
that they think this is going to work and i don't think anything has i think what's happening here
is we got a management group
that's grasping it strong.
Oh, they gassed their GM
five weeks before the draft.
Like, listen, let's be honest.
No.
The structure, hold on.
The structure that they're within,
the structure that they are
tethering themselves to.
Remember, William Nylander
and Mitch Marner's
no trade clauses
kicked in today as well.
So they can't move those guys
without their approval.
Good.
Good.
And according to multiple sources,
the William Nylander number
jumped a million dollars
once Pierre-Luc Dubois' extension was announced.
Oh, good.
And the Leafs don't want to sign under that.
And then they apparently couldn't trade him
because who's going to sign under that?
Look at what's happening with Debrinkat.
Debrinkat, no one wants to sign what he wants.
And so I'm looking at this situation
and I'm going, I think,
listen, the Toronto Maple Leafs
are still going to be a good team.
But what's going to be interesting
is that the focus won't be on April anymore next year.
The focus is going to be October 15th
or whenever their first night is.
What is this team?
we don't actually know but i it sure seems like they're just trying to it's it's like you know
when you build a sandcastle and then a wave hits it and then you're trying to like repair it that's
how it feels and it it does not it's not coming together so hot anymore and they've got nothing
in the system to take these guys places either sitting here today it feels like the 23 24 leafs
are worse than the 22 23 leafs and as a fan of the team that's a depressing reality to look at
your favorite team here's the bar um the closest recent comparable to this upcoming Leafs team the
way it is right now and there's lots of summer left is the 1920 Leafs and that team was the
bane of my existence so see you in October I think it'd be I think it'd be fascinating now
listen we've heard rumors that the Leafs are in on Domi the Leafs are pitching Bertuzzi we still
don't know where that's gonna stand might trade Nylander still I mean if he approves it what if
He's got a 10-team.
10-team, okay.
So Mitch Marner's has a full no-move clause.
That kicked in today.
But Mitch's is a 10-team no-trade.
At some point, and maybe this isn't the time,
maybe a year from now is the time,
but the Dubas hangover retrospective needs to happen.
Because, listen, Brad Treliving's going to take the shit for this.
Shani should take the shit for this.
Pritam should take the shit for this.
Kyle Dubas should take the shit for this.
This is not Brad Treliving's car.
The car was built for the driver.
And they fired the driver.
That's a good F1 reference there.
I like that.
I thought so.
I think you're absolutely right.
He probably had an idea of how the summer was going to shake out.
We've been saying, you know what?
It's time to move on from the core.
And the first time he mentioned it,
the first time the doubt left his mouth
that he would break up the core,
it was the last words we heard from him
as GM he was fired
I'm in a
dark place with the Toronto Maple Leafs
right now well listen there's still a playoff
team but like
it's also July 1st and there's a whole
summer ahead
it's just not a it's there's a lot
of and it's nothing against John Klingberg personally
it's just that they seem
to especially the last couple of years
have been trying to just kind of string something
together here to keep this core together and i don't understand why they didn't move players at
their maximum value to try to maybe oh okay this immediate year we won't be as good but then you
know we'll have a bunch of young guys and bring it up again with these core guys you know if you
make it about the core two matthews and marner or the core three matthews marner tavaris because you
because you gotta hold on to us you have to i don't know it's gonna be it's gonna be very
interesting to see what happens tonight that is sort of our last free agency video for the day
We've had some comments about the Marlies that signed today.
Yes, and I will save that for my video on my channel in our studio, if you don't mind.
Yeah.
Regarding the Leafs day that was and is because Johnny Goudreau has forever made me terrified of 10 and 11 o'clock signings.
