Sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where
TaskRabbit comes in and I think you should check this out because here's the deal.
One of the things, one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor

And their way around on that is like, well, it's a patio window, you can do that yourself.
And I'm like, well, hang on a second.
What if I don't want to?
I don't have the stuff because you got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing.
The chemicals, you got to have the right chemicals.
see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task

walk.ca well well well we finally find out the details of the bowen byram situation and baby
he's gonna be a black hawk a long time for a lot of money but key detail doesn't start till next
summer bo byram signs an extension six years 12 and a half million per year that is a lot of money
uh for bo byram however is there some some some hidden value in this with the with the cap going
up i'm just listen let me spin it positively as much as i can right now because i know where you
guys are going 75 million dollars cap is going up a lot next year it's already gone up a lot this
year the blackhawks have a plenty of room i mean 11 is this a big deal wow say that one more time
louder is this a big deal no no no steve it's 11 of the cap that is crazy that is unbelievable and
here jesse let me let me make it even crazier his contract and mitch marner's contract expire
on the same day
seven years from now
and Byram's going to be making
more than Marner
in five of those six years.
That's insane.
Do you want to...
Actually, no, sorry.
Six of seven years.
You guys want to hear a crazy stat?
Sure.
Bo Byram's the highest paid
defenseman in the NHL.
Currently.
No, he's not.
At the start of next year.
Yeah.
Right now.
Wow.
Now, Quinn Hughes will sign
his extension.
We'll know what that will sign.
But it won't kick in.
Wierenski.
Wierenski one day
will sign an extension next year uh kale mccarr's extension's coming up but right now he is right
now i believe the highest paid defenseman in the united as of like people on the book on the book
for the start of the 27 28 no 26 27 28 season correct what you're talking about right now he's
got the highest defensive contract that's that's wrong that's incorrect how to run your team
Bo Barman's never been the number one defenseman on his team last year.
I don't know.
Has he ever been number two?
He was.
Yes.
So last year he was third on the Sabres in ice time.
Two years ago,
he was second.
And three years ago,
he was third.
Like,
listen,
the argument that I was given by a Blackhawks fans,
and there's some validity to it is okay.
They give up the fourth overall pick for him.
He's the fourth overall pick and he's already developed.
And no, he's never once had the duties of the person that you want him to be.
Can he do it?
I honestly, I think he could.
Yeah, I really do.
But the evidence, the evidence doesn't support it.
The evidence does not support that he can do this.
He's never done it.
Maybe he will.
Maybe he will.
he had 42 points last year 11 goals best season of his career um he's had an injury prone career
but back to back 82 gate uh 82 game seasons 7 points in 13 playoff games i i personally liked
watching him uh in that series i streamed buffalo montreal even though it didn't go buffalo's way
you gave up the fourth overall pick plus and now you're giving him 11 of the cap yeah i want to say
this boy i want to say this voice okay all right so this goes really well and it's and connor
bedard has a great season and beau byram has a great season and spencer knight has a great season
i still don't see chicago making the playoffs yeah this isn't a playoff scene like i think
there's enough evidence that we know that they're still they're still in their rebuild era and they
need a lot more help than this this is a start like getting a player like beau byram in there
is something they need right at that price i don't agree with it and they've said this before but the
price for bo bryam should be in the casey middlestad area because that is literally what he was traded
for so we know what his value is i don't know how that's a few years ago that's a few years
i think there's enough hindsight that we can acknowledge that's just a bad trade by colorado
it's a bad trade it is it is it is you know i don't know i don't i don't think his values
jumped that much but back to the blackhawks point this is what they need like this isn't on dumping
on um bo byram like he's a good player i feel like it's just a little too much but if you're not
worried about being a cap strap team if they're not at the limit of the salary cap maybe this is
all irrelevant yeah if they have 10 extra million dollars in space for the length of this deal it
then who cares well and if the cap's going up by 10 every year roughly uh it doesn't i mean does
it matter and that's and that is i mean that's got to be their calculus one thing i want to
point out guys is this is a very expensive contract and when you and i'm going to repeat
elliot friedman's story about chicago's pro scouting staffs and you guys can back me on this
i said when this trade happened i said to you guys in the group chat i'm like somebody in that
organization was dying to get this guy because this is this is crazy what they gave up just the
value they gave to buffalo was a lot right and now with this contract i'm like that is a fortune to
turns out the the amateur scouts really wanted to draft him fourth overall uh they drafted doc
instead and he's been their white whale that was 2019 i know but he's been their white whale and
they finally got him back and this is this is what happens when you know and listen the walls
talk in the nhl if if that was something that chicago wanted to do and they feel like they
made a mistake darren ferris is going to drive him to the wall on that one but that was driving
the trade i don't even know that you've made the trade you have to make the extension why is that
your white whale bo byron he wasn't even the best defenseman picked in the top 10 there was a better
defenseman picked after him it was more at cider who would you rather have by room or side if you're
i know my answer if your white whale wasn't more at cider and you had the fourth overall pick yeah
then i then i question yes that's a good point like i'm not even saying oh bad pick or whatever
like byram was supposed to go that high uh cider was a reach at six i remember but
it's it was seven years ago all right if if we're using hindsight here why don't we use
seven years of hindsight that cider's a better player so let me whom by the way makes far less
now can i ask you guys a question i don't know man one last thing before we wrap up here what
conditions need to exist for this to be a good deal winning he winning yeah winning helps winning
uh the goaltending is solidified by night the forward group which is substantial the young
forward group that they have around bedard helps the damn kid and bedard uh bedard byram
anchors that decor and makes it so that they don't hemorrhage every night like here's the
hole that they got to dig out of they were 31st last season with 72 points they were five points
behind a third last and they were minus 62 that's the hole you're crawling out of right so i mean so
let's say because jumping up any spots in the nhl is always difficult right sure let's say they jump
up to 22nd in the league that's a huge that's a leap in the in nhl terms it's enormous right
that still puts you well out of the playoffs unless you're in the western conference which
they are which could put you right in the playoffs you have 18 points you could have the entire
atlantic division finish ahead of you and you still make the playoffs you have 18 points between
where you finished and the final wild card in the east that's nine wins the hardest thing to do
in the rebuild process is build back up kyle davidson has proven that he can strip this thing
down to the bone and they've done that and they got bedard and that's one of the also hardest
parts to do is get that superstar player but the hardest part is to build it back up it's it's it's
easy to tear it down but he hasn't proven that he's had this ability to build the team back to
where it should be and i'm still waiting for it did i call the wrong team the red sabers
there's room there's room there's room for more you're right jesse yeah and i think you got to
find it it can't be sabers anymore it's gotta be something else it does the sabers are the
biggest beneficiary here but what jesse just described is the 2010 sabers yeah that's that's
what he just described is this team that stripped it down maybe too far did get some uh lottery luck
like did get some look at the players who went through buffalo look at some of the players in
chicago you want to make people angry do you want to make every blackhawks fan angry watching this
let's start this i mean we've already done it let's go for it all right all you all you blackhawks
fans out there hate steve dangle because he just said connor bedard is your jack eichel
he's gonna win a cup of vegas oh and that's a good place right but now sdp don't worry we'll
be doing uh uh all this all day we're gonna be doing videos all day for each and every signing
and of course we've got our live stream starting at 4 30 correct is it 4 30 yeah 4 30 4 45 all
right somewhere in there just be on the lookout for it we love you all let's get going july 1st
baby zach warinski we don't know when this video will be out of date it might be by the time we
post it but we thought it might be smart because it's considered he's probably the biggest name
on the trade board right now to do a video the reigning norris winner yeah uh do a video tell
you what you know and it it came out over the last few days that there was a few teams zach
warinski would be willing to accept a trade to dallas stars were thought to be among those teams
Toronto Maple Leafs names have come up,
and obviously the Tampa Bay Lightning are in there too.
And it's not been a fun couple of days in Columbus
because they had a strong season, but the end of it went poorly.
And then they missed the playoffs,
and Wierenski and Kirill Marchenko over the last three days
have said, we're not going to play here anymore.
Nightmare.
And that is a nightmare.
That's brutal.
That's worst-case scenario stuff.
So obviously, right, Columbus is trying to maximize their return.
The shock last night was that there was a deal in place with the Dallas Stars, which apparently, guys, would have included Olympian, Canadian Olympian Thomas Harley.
And yeah, and the important context there is he's about to begin an eight year deal at just shy of ten point six million, which based on what we know, where we know contracts are going is a very cost controlled deal for a player of his caliber.
and that trade was vetoed yes and apparently it turned ugly between the agent and the in the team
last night uh it valiant freeman said it was a messy situation um messy means that there was
probably some swear words uh okay so let me ask you guys this um and oh also the one last thing
i want to add is that darren drager has said this morning on first up and on twitter that uh the
The Toronto package does not include Matthew Nyes.
That's insane.
That's insane.
So here's the question I would have is if Zach Rurinski really wants to come to Toronto, which it seems like he's open to, which is a great surprise.
You know, there was that narrative out there about Americans not want to play in Canada.
And Toronto's too tough.
I don't think it's too tough for Zach.
If this is the only place he wants to play, he's got a full no move.
The Leafs can, due to the Columbus Blue Jackets a little bit here, what the Florida Panthers did to the Ottawa Senators.
Is that how Nize is not included?
So let me give you a different example.
Okay.
Liam Greentree traded from LA with a conditional third round pick in 2026, which was used in a conditional fourth round pick in 2028 for Artemi Panarin.
man that deal stinks but it's because panarin would only go one place panarin panarin panarin
same panarin artemi yeah um when a guy is only going to go one place
what are you supposed to do i don't know yeah i don't either i don't know like all things
considered like i know a lot of people really didn't like the auto return all things considered
they did good they did they did very well and then they parlayed it into stuff that helps them now
and later i think they did really well there what evidence is there that columbus has any idea what
they're doing well i don't know that there's evidence that there isn't i mean jess do you
think that would you say don waddell i mean he's not clearly not in the driver's seat but he hasn't
made a bad deal yet no and they were building something special i think they were getting
closer to the playoffs like they were last year in the end they they just don't make that final
push but i think they've been good so far in terms of their rebuild and it's sad that it's
reached this place but he has his hands tied behind his back now it's the control it's out
of his control because wierenski said he's not coming back after these two years so he has to
make a choice here it's i'm going to make a maybe mediocre deal with toronto or i might lose him for
nothing here's uh you know to your point about waddell he hasn't made a bad deal yet kevin adams
built the buffalo sabers yes he did kevin adams yep he built the division winning buffalo sabers
went to the second round should have gone to the third um but it's a culture thing people didn't
want to be a saber um they had a horrible time being a saber and then when they heard he when
they heard he was leaving not even he'd been fired yet when they heard he was leaving they
go on this completely crazy win streak that they never look back from maybe that's what's going on
in columbus like that was a team i think we all saw on the rise and we were like what a great story
they completely collapsed at the end of the season aaron portzline went really hard
at both worensky and marchenko yes who who disappeared who disappeared down the stretch
when they lost out on their playoff spot and it's harsh but it's just true and and fair um they just
re-signed a cantankerous 72 year old coach who loves to rip his team postseason yeah and i think
uh at very least those two significant players your norris winning defenseman and your leading
goal scorer were like you know what enough of this jesse how do you react to this rick bonus
was asked yesterday by uh aaron port's line about this rick bonus being the 72 year old coach that
Steve was mentioning. I'm as shocked as anyone that these that this came up. I mean, at the end
of your meetings, we looked at each other in the eye and had a great meeting and gave each other a
hug leaving and all that. So everything was good. So when this all broke, I was shocked and caught
off guard like everybody else. I think there's a little bit of fibbing there because Zakarensky,
by all reports, has been making his intentions clear where he's not going to be back in two
years time when he's allowed to not be back. But that doesn't mean he wouldn't have played out the
last couple years in Columbus very happy it's the same thing with Brady Kachuk to be honest he was
willing to stick around in Ottawa for as long as it took that he was under a contract and he had
to play so it doesn't mean like oh he hates his coach and he's not going to hug the guy he's going
to play with next season if that's the decision they make so I assume they did have a hug and
they were all hunky-dory there because he's like I might have to come back here and play so we're
on good terms but he was very clear to Don Waddell I don't want to be here past the time I have to be
year can i tell you what i don't like about it okay the look at each other we looked at each
other in the eye the implication there is you look me in the eye we're telling the truth
we're we're we're we're sharing we're we're breaking bread we're having a conversation
it's man to man and it's real um zach barinsky has given 10 great years to the columbus blue
jackets and i understand fans being upset that he vetoed a trade to dallas and they're not getting
harley back oh i that i very much understand i i get that as a lease fan that's the better
package a hundred percent i know so no one's going to be upset but what i would say fans being upset
is completely rational and reasonable what i don't understand is a head coach going the
implication there is that he lied well there's pr there from the columbus side of things they don't
want it to look like they fumbled this situation they want it to look like hey you got to boo this
guy because he's asking out and he lied to us so i understand the spin from the organization
standpoint i'm not buying it like i think zakarensky's in his full right to exercise his
no move and not go to texas because that's what he negotiated his contract i know you want harley
but you should be mad at your team for giving him the no move that allows him to turn down harley
coming to the blue jacket and i am also surprised that he is like no i don't want to go to the
dallas stars i'd rather be a toronto mapley he's an east coast guy yeah he wants no he isn't he's
Well, he's from Michigan.
Yeah, he's...
Where are we counting the East Coast?
East side.
He is a Great Lakes guy.
Okay, there we go.
When I say East Coast,
I kind of just refer to the Eastern time zone.
You're not wrong, by the way, though.
There's a coast along the Great Lakes?
Yeah.
He's a Lakes guy, is how we'll put it.
Hell yeah.
And he wants to stay in the Eastern Conference
in that time zone
because that's where he spends his summers.
And Tampa and Toronto are good choices.
When people play here,
they they are adored it's one of the greatest sport cities in north america oh like why i don't
want to come back jesse i don't understand why people are shocked that somebody would want to
play here with his agent buddy uh austin matthew well you don't want to run into mark masters
every day the the lakes i just typed in lakes by dallas texas they're not they're not very big no
they're not anyway there's not lake ontario this could also turn into tampa gets him and we're all
well that's the thing so the tampa package that's a pretty big coast probably better than toronto's
as well because it might include likely to include a signed long-term and emerging jj moser yes
makes about like six seven point six point seven five or something like that it's like it's below
seven uh for sure and it's yeah long-term deal it's not thomas harley that's the second for
columbus yeah but jj is pretty good puckpedia has him as janice jerome moser well that's what
jj had absolutely no idea but he's about to begin an eight year 6.75 million dollar um deal yeah
and that's a left shot who can play the right side uh is moser so there at least there's like
versatility there um but it's not getting back to thomas harley but you think like okay it's moser
plus a couple pieces and tampa has more draft picks to work with than toronto tampa actually
shockingly has a decent amount of picks they have their 28 9 and 30 first round picks nice and then
a whole set of seconds that they can throw in there but columbus i assume wants more nhl ready
players yes so that they can stay competitive and also let's be honest they can't offer that
they can't they can't outside of knives they can't uh but they but the 28 29 and 30 draft picks are
likely to be close to second round picks anyway so i mean like let's be honest i mean no one julian
breezewell yeah we gotta rate those where they should be right i mean as much as they haven't
gotten far in the playoffs last few years and i think injuries and luck and all that has played
into it um they've been an elite regular season team and that's where it matters when it comes
to draft picks and and jesse you nailed it i think i think columbus absolutely wants people
now step in the lineup now and they should that is the right mind they can't be a feeder system
for the rest of the week.
Yes, I totally agree.
Totally agree.
Now, I wanted to take
the Dallas angle on this one,
but because there's
emerging news this morning,
I'm going to hold on that.
No.
So we will have
a Dallas video coming
because I want to talk about
the Jim Neal angle of this
and of Jason Robertson,
but we can save that
for another video.
SDPN's free agency
coverage continues.
Don't forget,
today, 430 and 445-ish.
That's when we're going to start
our live stream,
Eastern Standard Time.
Great Lakes time,
we call it.
Detroit time.
We'll be doing our live stream as we always do to kind of wrap up the day.
And I'm sure there'll be some signings that are announced then, too.
Until then, be on the lookout for more content.

So the Anaheim Ducks entered today with 40-ish million dollars to spend.
They spent a little bit of it last night on A.J. Greer.
And I want to talk about that deal.
And then I want to talk to you guys about the space that the Ducks have because it's a bit misleading.
First, though, A.J. Greer, we know him well in Toronto as the guy who busted up the Maple Leafs in the second round a couple of years ago.
What a series change once he got in.
He's a very effective role player, but he's going to be making.
Are you ready for this?
okay this is a guy with 32 points last year career year 4.25 million dollars four years
and a modified no trade clause that gives him a 10 team no trade list basically the canada buffalo
no trade it's right and i gotta tell you that's a lot of money for i mean he was going to be a
free agent and they flipped his rights obviously to to the ducks for radko gudas's rights um florida
has yet to sign gudas but you look at this guys and you go that's what ufa non that's not even a
prime position he's a left winger he's gonna make that is crazy i'm like is that your jeff vl
replacement are you pairing him with jeff vl like what is that i would i'd pair them together it's
crazy how like when i saw that deal my first instinct wasn't to criticize the ducks for it
because they have the cap space they're going to be fine um my first instinct was we are not ready
for tomorrow we are our brains are not going to be able to compute yep the numbers that guys are
signing it's going to be crazy now he is i maybe he got lost a little bit because he was on the
florida panthers and he just sort of blended into the evil crowd i don't think you understand how
belligerent this player is nikita zadorov brady kachuk tom wilson arbor jack i mark castellick
those are the only players in the nhl who have more penalty minutes than aj greer over the last
two seasons that's not a good thing no but i think a lot of hockey guys view it as yes it is yes it
is in the playoffs it is it means he's gonna beat the shit out of you yeah right that's something
that he enjoys doing is hitting you and beating the shit out of you shorthanded well this what
is a seventh most at any yeah but you don't get that from minor penalties you get that from me
i hope so they should we should have i can't actually check why do we not have advanced
stats penalty breakouts effective penalties versus ineffective penalties you know what i mean
that would be a good stat at least i don't mind versus oh come on now hey jesse what do you think
about this for the ducks you watched a lot of them with vegas in the playoffs and that's where
what do we think i don't mind it actually i think uh he's he's kind of like a piece they need i
I think that what he brings to the table is something I think the Ducks will be fortunate to have in the moments where they're up against a team like Vegas.
Because they've been kind of adding around the young guys that they got through their dark years.
And I think they've kind of arrived.
And these are things you do when you arrive.
You add guys like A.J. Greer just to supplant the edges.
I don't mind this deal at all, actually.
Sorry to follow up.
He's taken 119 penalties over the last two years.
That puts him 10th in the NHL.
uh 85 majors or sorry 85 minors 85 majors would be psychotic and uh 24 majors how many like where
does he rank with the minor penalties uh minor penalties he's surprisingly far down actually
okay yeah well he's not it looks like he's somewhere in the 30s or 40s uh major penalties
uh he is 14th okay behind his florida teammate jonah gadjovich that's insane perfect that team's
so insane and they got more insane i hate it uh so greer gets the money now in in anaheim land it
was 46 million dollars right or 40 at one point it's like 46 million or 44 million or whatever
it doesn't matter what we have here are two very notable rfas cutter goche who is ineligible to
sign a offer sheet and leo carlson who is eligible and it's funny because cutter gochi is a year
older but i think leo carlson started earlier and those two players alone and i know there's
other guys jeffrey vl who i really like jansen harkins they used a lot ross johnston they used
a lot more than you'd think um so but those guys would not be priorities add to that john carlson
has already said i'm not staying and they're having they've obviously made it to ufa and
Jake Truba has not re-signed.
There's a lot of work to do.
And I look at...
3D.
Let's talk about that Carlson and Gauthier,
that combo of deals.
Because if Greer is at $4.25 million,
I know I'm Leo Carlson and I'm a RFA,
but I also, through the games that I played in the playoffs,
was the number one offensive chance generator
in the National Hockey League.
Extremely good.
I would give Leo Carlson whatever he wants.
I would give him $12 million.
I think he might get $15.
well i'm not kidding jason robertson turned down over 15 at 14 or 15 is my guess and that's a
center right robertson's not like that's this is your this is your prime time i think that's fine
goche doesn't have quite as much leverage but he does have 40 goals but he does have 40 goals
so let's put him at let's put them at a combined clean 27 million goche 13 carlson 14 and the
funny thing about this for the ducks is that's kind of fine because they have 40 million dollars
in cap space yeah they they can afford it but they can't i i think there's a perception oh they
have 40 million dollars in cash because they can go out and do whatever they want they can go do
some things but they don't have a decor and i think uh all that money's spoken for like they're
there's a chance they're close to a cap team i think a hundred percent they're a cap team
throwing mintikoff's deal because he's also an rfa we're talking about all the rfas like he needs
his deal and like that's your but like i feel like that's fine like i feel like you have the
40 million dollars to go sign the young guys that i was just referencing that you've got through all
these years and now they're a playoff team it's mintikov it's carlson and gochie there's your 40
million dollars give it to them and then fill in the rest of your gap well there's some gaps there
if you scroll down a little bit jesse who's under contract on defense jackson lacombe yep and then
their next highest paid defenseman is drew hellison yep and tristan leno who was not playing
in the playoffs last year then you've got true but ufa potentially on his way out heinz and
minchikov you can probably resign for a combined eight or nine million i think right minchikov i
think i think a lot less than that um minchikov had a really breakout year once carlson kind of
jumped on board but beyond that guys i mean i'm i look at this i'm like why did they trade
olin zellweger i agree with you like yeah they've got a they got work to do here and that defensive
core was really strong for them in the playoffs but it got a whole lot weaker without truben
carlson there i do wonder about heinz six nhl games in the regular season but nine in the playoffs
um he was good they these guys gotta spend they gotta spend and they should probably trade as
well like do you really want to be building your entire decor through free agency this year
yeah i don't know yeah i i'm fascinated by what they're doing i don't totally i think we all agree
they're a good team on the come up but i don't exactly know what they're doing right i just i
have no concerns that when we start next year i'm gonna have them as a playoff team like i i feel
like it's so easy here to just get your business done whether it's through trades or free agency i
advocate heavy for the trading uh side of things because i think that's how you build your good
team these days but we're talking about getting a couple depth defensemen here and you re-sign
the guys who are future star or current stars for you that feels like easy business to just
maintain the level of playoff team you are so i'm very like adam i'm on your i'm hopping aboard
your ducks train you are because i'm a little concerned with the with the uh with the defense
issues like i am a little concerned that they're thinner vegas finished ahead of them they'll make
it edmonton finished ahead of them i don't know who's net but they ought to make it um are the
kings passing them are the sharks passing sharks maybe cracking flames canucks no no no if you have
your concerns about uh the ducks decor then you should have even more concerns about the sharks
yeah yeah they have like one they've signed to their decor and they're like get out of here
lilligren and ferraro yeah yeah i don't need you it's crazy fire beware there that's real
interesting you know what that defense core does make me wonder guys and this is just me being a
toronto guy morgan riley it does make me wonder about that because that's apparently one of his
destinations that he would go to so we'll leave it there and as always uh our our coverage continues
and we're going to do our live stream today our full podcast live stream 4 30 4 45 ish start it's
going to be a wild day just saw another trade break so uh we'll have more conversations coming
up here be on the lookout for the videos nick robertson is a pittsburgh penguin and yeah of
course he is man save the line bart one more time i'll do this loves his guys absolutely
adore them gotta catch them all dubious guys loves them absolutely loves them
jesse your reaction when this trade goes through it's it's nick robertson for a fourth round pick
we don't even know what year yet but i'm going to assume that it's probably next year uh your
thoughts on that my initial thought i just see the deal that he's finally traded in all honesty
because that's what we're here to do just be honest with the audience i'm glad it's over it
was a long saga of is he gonna be a leaf this year is now the time they trade him is he gonna make
the lineup or they're gonna healthy scratch him and then after his healthy scratching he's gonna
put up four goals and four nights and then he's not gonna make the lineup anymore and then he's
down on the fourth line i'm kind of glad all that's over i am too it seems like they're trying
to get away from guys that don't want to be here yeah and we had him in prison it was a lot of
noise for a depth winger yeah not a lie detected totally get it i will say this gave it his all
every night you know what i mean 100 yeah this isn't a criticism on his game at all no i'm just
talking about everything that came around it yeah nick robertson tried you are so right on yeah
tried vaporizes pucks just the tremendous defensive liability like just wild wildly man
can you imagine rolling a line of domey robertson mcmahon and all the time for two years caved man
caved but fun scored so much oh they were fun they reminded it took me back to a time where
uh tyler bozak and friggin kessel and jvr were running around and you're gonna be like wow
that's a compliment no they scored a lot but they got outscored it's not they got outscored
by like kind of a wide margin so i i look at i look at this for the pittsburgh penguins and i
go you know what and drew pointed this out to me i didn't realize how thin they were in the top six
you actually could probably get top six uh minutes this year if you look at their death
minutes in toronto right now well yeah but what i mean is that it looks like you know the way
things are kind of shaking out you've got Crosby Malkin was playing a lot of wing last year but he
can play center if you put him on the second line Nick Robertson can be a second line right winger
with Evgeny Malkin and and then you on the other side you got Chetakov so that's a pretty that's
not bad and we should say to Penguins fans like he played I think a lot more right wing than he
did left he did yeah and and and that's what I mean though is that you know uh and then you could
also move Ben Kindle up if you wanted to but looking at that I don't know that Tommy Novak's
going to be his centerman um it also pushes if if you know if malkin is to stay on the right side
it would push justin brazeau down i guess which probably is where he should be on the fourth line
do this pisses me off so much why why connor doer there connor doer who's been effective
justin brazeau who's been effective and i have no doubt that friggin nick robertson's gonna be
effective how many goals next year i think he finally gets 20 i think he might get 30 i do
think he can score a lot i think he's i listen i had him pegged as a 25 goal guy i'm not saying
25 goal guy on a great team that guy can score the problem is getting enough ice time to score
25 or 30 goals and in order to do that you need to not be hemmed in your zone like the craziest
fire drills of the year last year in a year that was full of them were his over the last two years
were his and again he busts his ass every night you never see him take a shift off but his
positioning in his own zone is so horrible that it it cost him opportunities like
leave fans for years we're rooting for this guy let's go nick and then we just see him
bumble and kick the buck around his own end for 90 seconds and you saw that happen enough times
It was the one thing in a year, in an era where we were very much against most of the decisions Craig Berube made, where we were like, yeah, I understand.
So let me ask you this.
Does this pave the way for the return of Eminem, Matthias Michelli, the Candyman?
I mean, nobody calls him that.
Michelli is just probably the better version of Robertson, though.
Right.
Like a defensive liability.
I know his metrics are pretty good, but from what I saw, it wasn't great.
He's a better playmaker, not as good of a goal scorer, but actually still effective.
Yeah, but do they go in a completely different direction or do they keep him?
Because the thing about having Robertson and Michelli is they were both in different ways kind of the same thing, right?
People are like, oh man, Michelli raked on the power play last year.
A good team would not have Michelli on the power play, not on the first unit.
Not on the first unit.
And the reason he was on there was because they had so many injuries and they sucked.
Yeah, second unit fine.
I think they're going in a different direction.
Okay.
Get the guys out of here who don't want to be here, whatever.
Now, the return for Toronto isn't great.
I mean, it's not noon yet.
Maybe Pittsburgh signs him too.
This is a 16-goal score, guys.
I'm not kidding.
And they got a fourth-round pick for him.
Yeah.
Do you care?
He was going to go to arbitration, make a lot of money.
Here's something I'm just going to remind people of, right?
because toronto leaf fans like took a lot of heat this season running players out of town here's
what people forgot or maybe don't realize we like our players we love our players i like the guys on
the leaf yeah so i like have built a uh an admiration for nick robertson over the seven
years that he's been in the leafs organization i don't know who that fourth round pick is yeah
right so i'm not gonna get overly worked up about hooray they got a fourth round pick
now ask me in about 90 minutes when they replace him and i'm gonna be like i don't know that man
right but right now he doesn't go here i have different feelings jesse what do you think about
the trade return is this just clear it and be done with it i think it's an indictment on the
past gms for not making this deal earlier because i think in previous seasons we would have seen him
go for i think at least a third and michelle was a third maybe even a second round pick at his height
yeah where nick robertson was at and i don't fault chica for having to do the deal now and only get
that little i don't think it's and it's unfortunate that he has to wear that right exactly i don't
think it's chica's fault that he only got a fourth round pick i think it's the previous regime's fault
for not moving off of this sooner if this was our inevitable end anyways i wish we did it earlier
where his value was higher can i give you a sliding doors moment i heard a very strong rumor
last year that robertson for chinakoff was going to be discussed and now they're playing together
that's right chinakoff was pretty darn good with the pittsburgh penguins there over the years it
felt like there were a lot of swaps like that you could have made for underperforming high draft
pick for underperforming high draft pick around the league and nobody ever pulled the trigger
and now that they've reached the point where hey let's pull the trigger it's it's underwhelming
and it's not his fault i'm saying this 25 joking this is brendan shanahan's fault
no it is it is and you know the other thing is is that obviously the best time to trade a draft
pick is right before the draft the best time to trade a prospect is when they've gotten to a few
games look pretty good and you're going into a season right because that then it's like well he
he could be something great we don't know and that gets people really intrigued boats a boat
but the mystery box could be anything.
That's the point, right?
And I think the Leafs,
I think you make a great point there.
The Leafs miss the boat on that one, literally.
And you know what?
They clear space.
That third line needs to be completely rebuilt.
We don't know what's going to happen with the defense.
Is Morgan Riley going?
Is somebody with the ZW coming in?
We have no clue, but...
Zach Whitecloud?
We will be checking.
Could be.
We will be checking in with you all day
as these free agent signings break
and also re-signings and also trades.
Don't forget, live stream tonight
between 4.30 and 4.45,
depending upon how the news day goes.
We'll do a full podcast,
break it all down live for you
right here on YouTube.
Nico Heischer, New Jersey Devil.
For a very long time,
we weren't sure we were going to get there.
And if Tom Fitzgerald
was still the general manager,
we probably wouldn't have.
But Sonny Mata has come in and said,
let's let cooler heads prevail.
Let's do the intelligent thing.
And the sign, the guy that we drafted
so high in the draft
and is our captain and is 27.
So high.
And is a center.
First overall.
Yeah.
well that's the point i can't get higher uh he is signed till 2032 steve have you seen the term
i have not okay let me ask you what do you think the money is let's go um okay so that's their
captain he's coming off a 82 game season 28 goals 30 assists 66 points two-way center though so you
don't necessarily go by those i'm gonna say pope byram just signed for friggin give me yours first
give me yours first years for so it goes till 2032 yep uh so those years don't count oh i don't
know you know the years now just guess the money just get to the point 13.25 he's gonna sign for
the eichel number less less yeah 12.5 the byram number less 12 million the marner number less
11 million the uh dora fey of number more okay bring it up 11 and a half 11 7 11 7 for five
years that's not a bad this is a guy by the way where the cap is a center where the cap is going
that's wonderful that's an excellent deal now it's a 10 of the cap deal like right now or when
it kicks in but who cares they get his prime years those five prime years 28 to 33 at 10 point
Sorry, $11.7 million, just a hair above what William Nylander makes.
And he's a setter, plays prime position, and he's been fantastic for them.
One more year at 725 and then they're still.
Yes, exactly.
So he'll be there.
That's why I said it starts at 20, because I assume he's already had his birthday.
But maybe not.
Now, here's the thing.
We've got a guy here that almost left.
And now you've got your front court essentially solidified.
You've got Jack Hughes.
You've got Nico Heischer.
That's a pretty damn good one, too, if they're healthy.
signed both signed a very good deals healthy though are they healthy jack hughes like especially
where the cap is going i wonder if he regrets that deal he probably should have regretted it
before the cap went up he makes eight million dollars for the next four yeah yeah that's jack
hughes yep like oh my god that's incredibly good to have jack hughes and nico he sure locked up
for less than 20 million dollars for the next three seasons after this one is
That's magic.
Like, listen, Tom Fitzgerald did not do well in New Jersey.
He did a terrible job.
Yeah.
That's unreal.
Yeah, Sonny Matt has come in and he's trying to correct mistakes.
Because, yeah, you look at something like the Luke Hughes deal.
Right now, that's an ugly deal.
Like, even with the cap going up $9 million right now,
hopefully he grows into that being a really good deal.
But right now, you know, it's not pretty.
But a move like this corrects those things,
where you're saving so much on the cap
on a really good Nico Heischer deal
that like those other deals
are probably a bit of an overpay,
but now everything kind of looks all right.
And how about this?
They got out of Markstrom's contract yesterday.
Yes.
And that is massive for them.
What are they going to do in net?
We don't know.
Yeah, they still need a goalie, but.
That's not bad.
And they also managed to get Boquist
back in that deal too.
I think like there is a.
And Rodriguez.
I think, yeah, and Rodriguez.
I think if Rodriguez is going to play center,
you got Hughes, Heischer, Rodriguez down the middle.
that's not bad man and it's not bad and who uh bocas play center oh bocas play can play some
centers not always yeah this is a really this is shaping up to be a very interesting team and i
again they have an obvious flaw at goaltending i think jack jack allen's a great backup and he
signed forever but you've got to do something there uh they've got the money to do it and they
got the time to do it now what do you think they need here when you look at this lineup obviously
maddie if we can bring down my my picture there looking at the defense as well i mean it looks
pretty solid to me that they should have a good chance the four group still needs help to be i
think a solid playoff team like i they're roughly penciled they're lightly penciled in right now
like my eraser is ready because i still think they're gonna have to compete with a team like
the islanders who were competitive for a lot of last season are only gonna get better i think with
their young guys developing so i'm unsure if right now i have them in the playoffs because i think
the four group still needs work metro's gotten a lot better right like i i was looking at that and
I'm like, no, it's a playoff team.
All right.
Well, obviously not Carolina.
I'm not sure about Pittsburgh.
I'm not sure about Philly.
Washington's due for a bounce back.
Oh, OK.
Geez.
All of a sudden, the Islanders, like you mentioned.
And then you got to take sorry, New York.
If they're a wildcard team, they're competing with the Atlantic teams.
Right.
The Atlantic is stacked.
So right.
And they have the Philly thing.
I forgot about like Philly was in the playoffs last year.
One around.
So we can't just can't count them out right now.
The devil, the devil's there in a hard place.
everyone seems to be poo-pooing the idea of halibut going there and i think it's perfect
it makes so much sense yeah yeah for them now what do you give up you tell me well i all these
teams i think what we're finding is all these teams with these i can't ignore the fact that
they're all american olympians they're not exactly getting a king's ransom like since fans were
disappointed in the brady kachuk return and i think they did actually pretty well you know what
i mean oh yeah so i think no matter what the hellebuck deal is uh jets fans are probably
going to be upset devils fans are going to be completely jacked because they get one of the
best if not the best goalies in the league um but there's a gap here right so right now jake
allen's their starter so their starting goalie for next season is going to be somewhere between
jake allen and connor hellebuck like there's a lot of i have no idea what the solution is there
yeah and in the simon nemish deal they picked up a first round pick that they can now flip to
winnipeg for connor hello and it's a valuable one because we don't expect calgary to be great
maybe they'll be better it's uh vegas's first oh it's vegas's first yeah oh then it's oh they
stink it's the one they got in the anderson deal i think okay well they're about to fall off a
cliff right lack of success lately right late late second late first round pick but they also
have their own first round pick too that they can move so they have options here and they also have
two first rounds in 28 as well so as a part of that calgary deal uh because it was colorado 28
yeah that's the colorado one and their own so i'm all i'm trying to outline is new jersey has
assets to work with if they want to go out and buy there are there are things they can do here
that would be incredible if they were able to somehow turn that into hellebuck because i
actually don't like the return they got for nemish two firsts and maybe a prospect two firsts but
they're like two contending
first it's Vegas and Colorado
throw those in the garbage like
if Winnipeg will take them get rid of them
the garbage in Winnipeg yeah throw them
in the I'm not calling
Winnipeg garbage but you
Kevin Shevelday off could sometimes
be referred to as that yeah I
just want to say this it's amazing
to watch a couple of teams this
year with new general managers
completely change their outlook
Toronto and New Jersey had a really
depressing end of the season young gms with blood in their veins and and they've switched their
general managers from olds to youngs i thought you were going somewhere else who else you have
i thought you were gonna say nashville and christmas mcfarland well he's not like a young
guy though oh but i knew gm new new listen they look better too and we will do a video on them
yeah no you're right jesse that's a good point jack i like i like the deals they've made
56 which is young by nhl absolutely but imagine you're basically a toddler if you're shika or
sunny manna so oh my god you're barely a person so yeah so you know i you're right jesse i think
that there are a couple of teams where i would have looked at that and gone i don't know what
to do toronto and new jersey would have been one of them and boy do they look a whole heck of a
lot better lots of reasons to be excited and free agency hasn't even opened yet but when it does we
will give you all sorts of content we're going to be breaking down as many of these as we can
and i know we'll get to most of them plus we got our live stream between 3 30 sorry 3 30 4 30 and
445. Somewhere in there is going to be our start time later on this afternoon to break the day's
events down. And of course, there will probably be some signings and stuff as the live stream
happens or just after, as is tradition. We'll see you on the SDPN YouTube channel.
Hockey Agent One, who am I? You are gold star. He's not Smart Insider Man. He's Hockey Agent
One. His name is Dan Milstein. And he got himself a nice little extension for his client,
ivan demidoff eight more years at nine one two five per season that's nine million dollars that's
pretty great but damn the montreal canadian salary cap picture continues to be phenomenal
yo it's annoying so there's a lot of like canada narrative no one wants to play there and the taxes
and the blah blah blah all of these guys like okay dan with respect should fire their agent
Like everyone on the Montreal Suzuki makes 7.8,
seven,
five Caulfield makes 7.8,
five Slavkovsky makes 7.6.
Demidov just signed for 9.125 Dobson at nine and a half.
We'll skip over that one.
Lane Hudson,
8.85.
They're all getting robbed.
All of them,
all of them.
crazy and here's the thing the extension doesn't kick in until next season so the montreal canadian
still have 14.2 million dollars in cap space to work with it's funny it looks like it kicks in
this season but it's because he makes 940 000 you just see a number starting with nine missing a
zero that's right yeah it's mitch missing a digit jesse your reaction uh best team in the league
continues to make best uh god that's how i see this thing you guys had the wrong member of the
sdp is the leaf fan yeah or as the habs fan damn it they they're like honestly like if matthew
shaver doesn't exist this guy's probably winning the calder trophy um and you lock him up 20 goals
last season unbelievable uh start to his career for for demidoff and like this is a comfy number
and you see all of their their stars that steve outlined signed at really comfy numbers and as
the salary cap goes up this deal is only going to get better and he's only going to get better as a
player i think montreal is setting themselves up for a future where nobody is unreasonably paid
which is an unreal feat in the salary cap era because usually you have those boat anchors on
your book but the way you look at all of the guys who they're committing to long term you're like
i'm comfy at that number and they're going to be a cap team yeah and they're going forward going to
continue to spend and if you want to look at it this way like the line a deal just came off the
book and this is where they've allocated that money next season so they even have that free
money to still work with this season you know so if you thought they were a good team last year
with that boat anchor there this is now where that money is going and they're still that good
team and the salary cap's going up so they're gonna have more room like what is there to
complain about with how they're handling their cap i can't find anything to complain about they
still got a re-signed doc uh brett berard zach bulduke uh arbor jack eye it's totally totally
you know what i love about they're gonna be fine canadians too is they had this goalie that
carried them through the end of two series obviously the montreal series they had nine
shots in game seven uh what was the game seven shot total in in buffalo like it was pretty low
uh well i know the tampa one was like 25 to 9 yeah and then the buffalo one was similar right
it wasn't great and he might not even be their best goalie right like fowler is it could be
jacob fowler ace prospect like that is like what do you say like montembeau will be coming off the
book he's been an effective player for them at times but like josh anderson making 5.5 hasn't
been very comfy for them it's annoying yeah you look at them just moving brendan gallagher to
freeing up that money and that money is only going to be on their books for this season when
his contract uh expires after next season so that's a good move and yeah they're set up for
the future in so in every position yeah you know and like the lane hudson deal is my favorite deal
in the nhl i mean he's joking but he's also not where's the line lane shouldn't have pushed for
that deal he should not have pushed for an extension last summer and how about this prospect
adam what do you think of this player um left-handed center 45 goals 83 points in 55 whl
games does that sound impressive sounds pretty good cool he's a right-handed defenseman i lied
and who would that be bryce pickford 45 goals wow all right and they also have michael haji
gg gg or whatever his name is that you know we don't know we don't know his name here in
toronto no we don't possibly pronounce it properly uh he's apparently an untouchable
Habs fans, so good news for you there.
Free agent coverage continues on
SDPN. It's a crazy day already.
Lots of re-signings, some trades that we
haven't even got to yet because we're waiting on extensions.
Lots to talk about, and remember
tonight, our live
stream's going to start somewhere in the neighborhood of 4 to 4.30
as we break down the events of the
day happening, and of course
I'm sure something will happen while we're on the
live stream as well, so we'll see you there.
Olin Zellweger will be a
Buffalo Sabre, we think, unless he gets traded, for the
three more years. Good for him.
can we tell can we tell the story about before we made this video so steve and i read the tweet
and steve the tweet said what that he signed a nine million dollar contract three years nine
million was the way it was which i misread as oh my god olin zellweger makes nine million dollars
the sabers have lost their minds but uh no it's it's uh it's only uh 3.1 i believe yeah 3.1
million dollars that's a 9.3 million yeah that makes that makes sense that's a really good
bridge contract for a guy that did not get enough ice time last year in anaheim to i think really
show what he can be the sabers clearly really believe in him he's only 22 he's 22 looking at
the ducks blue line i don't know why they traded him no i don't understand that either and like
the healthy scratch in the playoff stuff i don't bat an eye at it he's 22 yeah it was also a second
round pick that you've kind of just kind of punted out the door you know 34th overall like close to a
first from 2021 and an nhl player yeah now that i sit here i'm like yeah why did the ducks do that
anton walberg who they got is a legitimate prospect they drafted uh jayden kurtz um out of
the the ushl um those guys could turn into great pieces you know who could turn into a great piece
is olin zellweger so i don't really understand why they did that but he's above all the saber
now and that's all that matters seven goals in each of his last two seasons 20 points and then
22 he only got into three playoff games but he managed to score a goal in an assist anyway
um this is a great young player man yeah so looking back on the trade yeah you do recoup
that second round pick but you made the zellweger pick in 21 so now you're 21 pick that you used
all of these years to develop five years you know you grew this player into an nhl player
now you're just repeating that cycle so if we that took five years another five years so now
your 2021 second is going to take you 10 years to get to the nhl level that's very odd really
odd relationship with their young players you're either in in so in forever or get the hell out or
get out immediately zgris drysdale zell wagger i might be missing oh mctavish
that's a decent crop of guys imagine you still have those guys yeah yeah yeah you know but
uh obviously they're doing well so who am i to criticize friggin uh uh the ducks and what
they're doing and i think you can have questions you can have questions oh i have questions yeah
but they're winning i've been the biggest one of the biggest advocates for buffalo sabers are
having a really good off season and i think this just continues that yes like i i love this deal
it's the the depth defenseman piece you know after you move by room it's something they've
had to work on even the trade deadline moves of stanley and shen that's what they were trying to
solve so here you have zellweger who's 22 years old hopefully the depth defenseman and maybe he
was going to move up in the lineup one day but with dolly and power they're probably not but
this is the guy you've been looking for stable back there you're not searching for these guys
anymore there's kekaline and solving another problem now go fill out the uh forward group if
you need to and i don't know i really like buffalo this off season i'm i'm looking forward to their
season upcoming destination buffalo buddy yeah destination like how can you not be positive
about what they're doing zellweger crevier is going to be fun to watch crevier being the gigantic
man that he is uh like even sam carrick is someone who they really missed in the playoffs like he was
such a good fit for them when they got them yeah this is a fun team malenstein they're getting
younger too it's just unbelievable and all those young guys are just gonna grow into their games
they missed host it's so weird to see buffalo making really good moves i'm still not used to
i know i gotta adjust yeah but i but i hate it i'll tell you that as a leaf fan i hate it their
cap space is running out a little bit they only have 8.6 million dollars in current cap space as
of the recording so they may be in the mix for like the mid-level free agent here if they want
to go free agent shopping but i could see another trade maybe happening yeah some depth signings
too with that now do you think conor hellebuck's still on the table for the buffalo sabers
yeah if you're sending out money um that's definitely something they could fit and that
would that would make that would catapult them into another stratosphere of contender like that
would if you replay the montreal series they think they win that yeah right yeah that that is a very
very interesting i'm keeping my eyes on that if you're cacaline and are you chasing that right
now i think you got to right and and i maybe upl has to go i wonder could they not roll a hellebuck
upl uh or hellebuck lion hellebuck lion's just so upl doesn't get it across the line is it upl
and picks if i'm the devil's or the devil sorry if i'm the jets i don't know how stoked i am about
that is it something like upl and quinn right and i don't know maybe pixel as well and they
have a pipeline of guys and they had the fourth overall pick all these all these teams losing
guys like the sends losing kachuk american olympian the blue jackets potentially losing
warrensky american olympian the jets potentially losing connor halibut american olympian larkin
they oh yeah my god larkin but all those teams want to be better now they want parts that help
them now even the sends who took exclusively futures flip them for help now right so upl
quinn helps the jets now but at the end of the day you're replacing connor hell about yeah man
yeah tough all right well we'll see what happens now sdpn's uh at free agency continues uh we're
gonna have re-signings we're gonna have trades and we're gonna have videos for all of them and
don't forget our live stream tonight between 4 30 and 4 45 uh because we're not quite sure how it's
all going to go today it's going to get crazy be watching the sdpn youtube channel for all of your
updates big signings or resentings i suppose for the florida panthers one of them immediately off
last year's roster the other one from the roster a few years ago uh we got a2 luster ryan and radco
goodis now i want to start with uh radco goodis because the contract's just kind of funny have
you seen the term on it yet yeah okay jesse have you seen the term i tried to avoid okay six years
one and a half schmill per year i think this is actually phenomenal for florida and it's phenomenal
for radco because here's the deal he ain't playing that whole that whole time it's a joke but well
it's not it's not who cares let it look like you know what here's the thing he's not playing the
whole time he was happy in florida they missed him bring him back for the end of his career and
then they're going to put him on ltir like the rest of these six-year contracts people acting
like these guys are going to play into their 40s you are what universe are you living in like all
those guys martian is another guy where i go come on they're gonna just put him on they'll put him
on a six-year deal and he doesn't play the last six months younger than chris taniff yeah he just
signed a six-year deal yeah like i don't know we all listen um it's not cheating we've no exactly
so we've given vegas a lot of crap for doing stuff that is not nice and tactics that are
mean or rude or crude or whatever they're not illegal no they're not florida panthers
have also done some things along these lines yep until the nhl does something about it signing
brad marshand until he's 52 and signing radko gudas until he's 64 and signing all these guys
who could be congressmen like uh until they they do something about there's nothing all these teams
are going to continue to exploit there's nothing they can do about it because the pa is never going
to let them 1.5 million might not even be league men by the end of this oh i don't think it will be
and i but but and honestly who cares who loses here the the no one the the the team gets the
player for the last to squeeze the last little bit of juice out of them the player gets to stay
the league and when they're retired quote-unquote because they'll be ltir'd um they will still make
1.5 million dollars good for them good for their family who cares right radko gudas i gotta say in
division is great business for us and this is what they're yeah as long as he's as long as he's not
trying to go for austin matthews knees yes jesse this is what they're signing radko gudas to do
yeah like this is the peak of radko gudas anybody listen he never really had to pay for this no it's
Radko Gruta screaming in the face of Joseph Wall.
And that's what they want in Florida.
They want him to be peak, you are an asshole on the ice,
and that's all you need to be.
And by the way, that player behind him is Cali Yarncroke,
who he was holding the stick of on this rush.
It went uncalled, and it ended their season.
And Cali Yarncroke did nothing.
And the Leafs did nothing.
And that's the Toronto Maple Leafs where you could get punked.
Now, when we look at this, plus Garnett Hathaway, right?
Who spit on a guy.
yeah they're they they're crazy people are gonna get what i always have to bring that up he hawked
a loogie on eric goodbranson like the footage go watch the footage some people like he spit it no
he spitted glock tour on eric goodbranson right in the fox did he spit on that thing
he's 100 spat on that and then he started a meme coin yeah hey i i you know do you remember we had
Dennis Marouk on who you can read from Sportsnet wrote an article or an article, a book about
Dennis Marouk and Dennis Marouk scored 60 goals for the Washington Capitals one season in the
80s. And the reason that Ken wrote the book is that he's the forgotten 60 goal man, right?
He scored 60 goals in that season. He was third. Yeah. So Dennis came in, did the show. And one of
the things we asked him about was the Philadelphia Flyers in the 70s. We said, what was it? Was the
flyers flew thing real and he said absolutely players if you guys don't remember because you
weren't alive i wasn't either players back then would be like oh i'm sick oh i gotta hurt groin
because they didn't want to play the philadelphia flyers do you cough when you ever hurt yeah well
when you're faking it yeah that was the joke you see when you're faking it yeah but what's the
what's like is that gonna kind of exist with the florida panthers like florida and tampa are
playing a preseason game oh i know even the argument that florida is going to be slow
even if that's true they're going to beat the shit out of you yeah you're gonna hurt man they're
gonna beat your ass bennett both kachuks their second line is exclusively olympians yep what are
what are we their third line is exclusively olympians it's lusterine and lindell marshand
Yes, and we have to talk about Luster Reynon because he also extended, Steve.
And that's not even talking about their decoy.
I know.
So, Gudis, I accidentally saw the extension.
Luster Reynon, I don't know that deal.
Okay, I'm pulling it up right now.
And, you know, Luster Reynon, let's just talk about while I bring it up here.
Let's talk about what he brings to this team.
Do not look up his salary because I want you to guess.
Okay.
Okay.
What does he bring to this team?
What is he for this team?
He's a great two-way center.
he's able to contribute offensively um really really capable on a shutdown line i keep going
dell luster ryan and marshan man i keep up in nightmares i keep going back to this uh you know
paul maurice credits the panthers fourth line for turning the 2025 series against the leafs around
he's lying it was the i mean they did well but it was lindell lusterine and marshan getting
matched against matthews who was kicking in barkov's teeth he was beating barkov like pretty
considerably. They were on the verge of sweeping
these guys and they lost
the series. All right, Jesse, have you seen
the term? Yeah, I got it ready to go. Okay.
Steve Dangle, do not put it on the
screen yet. Don't put it on the screen. I didn't see it.
I didn't see it.
One more time.
Steve, how many years? How much money?
Eight.
Eight years? Eight years. Or did you say
eight million? No, no, eight years. Eight years. Okay.
You are correct. Oh, hot damn.
Five mil
Nailed it
No way
I swear to god
I swear on Max
I swear on my dog
Puckpedia
Five years extension
Where does it say that
Right there
Jesse that's a Puckpedia logo
It doesn't say that
Change your name Steve Cheater Dangle
I swear on my puppy dog
Steve Cheater.
Hey, Steve, that deal kicks in next year.
It doesn't even kick in this year.
And it takes him to at least 36.
What do we think about that?
Okay, there's a world where in a few years,
the Panthers are the most disgraceful.
Like that?
Awful hockey team we've ever seen.
Unlikely, but yes.
But we don't live in that world.
We currently live in a world where they are,
everyone needs to cope the oh they're slow ladies gentlemen they are stanley cup contenders
they are going to be win or lose a miserable night for your hockey team i'm not sold on their goalie
tandem at all yeah i'm not sold on that like that's a insane like if you're gonna go from
the last time they won the cup which was bobrovsky stallers and stallers led the league in safe
percentage and bob is bob this is a tremendous downgrade like i'd markstrom has been pretty
consistently going downhill but they've got a great goaltending staff there they do they do but
you're you're asking markstrom to have the best season he's had in five years can you tell the
story about how he built your content series he bloody built steve's dang it he is the reason for
the saying if you're a goaltender 10 the goal because when he's in the net he stops the puck
or at least that's the way it used to work you got to remember we started this series pre-covid but
he when he was in the net stopped the puck and then you were good to get a scoring chance
from him just playing the puck in the corner like a stooge once a night yeah and it got to the point
where like drew and i are working on these videos and i'm like this is the well that never runs dry
yeah this guy he's one of the worst pocket handling goalies i've ever seen and i remember
somebody i think it was a member of our discord or somebody just on a comments did the stats of
how many times the goalies were featured in a dang it's that year yes second place had
had three yeah and marsham was up to like double digits i think it was eight eight but like it was
still it was more than twice as much like renee was kind of bad dubnick was kind of bad at times
But you couldn't trust otherworldly.
Stay in your frigging net.
So I'm unsure of that goaltending situation too.
And we know that goaltending is something that can sink you.
If you just can't get a save,
like it doesn't matter how good your defense or forward group is,
that can just screw you completely.
But I think they'll be able to get enough out of Markstrom
to do enough so that this team is going to be fine.
I think you can doubt that Panthers goaltending staff at your own peril.
Until I see evidence that they can't do it,
I'm going to believe that they can.
And I think that's why they made the move that they made.
Bob Brofsky, free agent, been linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
We'll see.
Now, our coverage continues all day long.
Anytime there's a signing, a re-signing, a trade, whatever,
we're going to be all over it.
And we got our live stream later on today
between 4.30 and 4.45 is our expected start.
But of course, the news can change and happen, whatever.
So we'll see what happens.
But we'll see you then on the SDPN YouTube channel.
at pmcfwalk.ca.
Rasmus Anderson staying with the Vegas Golden Knights,
which we expected.
He wanted this for years.
They wanted this for years.
They finally got the trade done.
And what did they call it?
They kept calling it like a handshake deal.
And I heard someone else call it a,
oh, that's a front drawer deal or something.
I'm like, what?
I don't know what that is,
but I guess they agreed to this deal a while ago.
Vegas needed to make some moves.
Dorothea was one of them
to be able to make room for Rasmus Anderson's contract.
And it is eight point five million dollars over seven years.
So that is a fifty nine point five million dollar contract.
I got to be honest with you.
I watched a lot of Vegas this year.
He didn't look great in the playoffs.
I'm assuming they're hoping for a bounce back there.
Just one note about the contract.
The fact that he waited till July 1st ruled out an eight year deal.
Right.
So they they delayed this signing and it took him out of contention for a re-signing with a team to do an eight year deal.
and it becomes technically a free agent signing,
which is max seven.
Maybe they could have brought his AAV down,
but maybe they didn't want to do the eighth year.
I don't know.
This signs him until he's 36.
Maybe they were trying to get something else done.
And also, I don't know.
Why do you want him for eight years?
Well, you did seven.
Yeah.
Yeah, but I mean,
my guess is Vegas barely wants him until he's 36.
And that would have him until he's 37.
I'm going to give you a little secret here.
They're not going to have him until he's 36.
No, they might not have him until he's 30.
30?
30.
They might not have him until he's 30.
Because it's Vegas.
And Vegas is always going to do what's best for Vegas.
And that's why Vegas has been so good.
I am on the side of Rasmus Andersen as a far better player than we saw in the playoffs.
And he was wretched.
I watched it.
He was not good.
He had six points, all assists, no goals in 22 games for Vegas.
He had nine penalties.
That's not the kind of player he is.
No.
Like at all.
uh he's money in the bank for double digit goals he actually had 17 goals this season
uh spread between calgary and vegas which is a career high he's usually money in the bank for
somewhere between 30 and 40 points he's gotten as high as 50 he blocks a lot of shots he hits a lot
he's a fantasy hockey darling which is why i'm talking about him with so much reverence
defensively sometimes lacking yeah and we did see that in the playoffs but it was harder to forgive
because the offense wasn't there right and that's this is where i'm curious about this deal with
vegas because first off i think the fact that he wanted to be there so bad gave them the leverage
to have the have the signing be this low if he's a right shot defenseman can't believe this is
going to low now well consider well it is though look at what bo byram just got i know and he's a
ufa this guy could have got 12 13 million dollars on the market easily and he chose to stay in vegas
because of course he did everybody you know kelly mccrimmon said it uh he's like you get treated
like a first class person here it's a great organization whatever as long as you're here
and when we're done with you you're gone there we don't know about any sort of trade protection in
this deal just yet because it hasn't been announced i would assume there's a no move associated with
this but you know i i do think intelligent move for vegas because if you get injuries guys like
shea theodore have played a lot of hockey and played a lot of late round hockey i can see
people missing games and and and needing maintenance having a guy like rasmus anderson
and be able to step up and be that great.
I think that's pretty cool.
And I never understood.
If he's going to be great, that is.
I never understood.
Oh, yeah, they're not going to keep him.
I never understood that.
Dude, they gave up.
So it was, I'm on HockeyDB now.
It was Rasmus Anderson from the Calgary Flames
to the Vegas Golden Knights for Zach Whitecloud,
who's a great defenseman.
Abram Wiebe in a conditional first round pick in 2027
and a second round pick in 2028.
Dude, that's a decent little haul, man.
Yeah.
and uh you're not you're not giving that up for a rental uh certainly not this day and age like
rentals are rentals are reserved for like third round picks you know what i mean dudes who you
know aren't staying on the elite end we're talking usually a second unless it's like a unicorn like
john carlson who might end up in the hall of fame and then you're gonna give up a first round pick
but we're all looking at the ducks like oh and they didn't keep them yeah yeah and they didn't
keep them vegas is keeping this guy and they should they paid a ransom for him now the projected
cap space for the vegas golden knights guys is negative 5.125 but with petrangelo going on uh
we're expected to go on ltir there was that random report this week that he might be ready to go
i don't i wouldn't put anything past the vegas goal uh yeah but i don't think he is i uh but
But anyway, $8.8 million would go on LTIR, assuming he was signed up for a season-ending one.
They have Parker Weatherspoon making 500 grand.
But that's a legit question.
They might not have been able to, if Parker Weatherspoon had not been bought for half retained or whatever from the Pittsburgh Penguins yesterday,
we're probably looking at a scenario where it's pretty difficult to put a lineup on the ice.
i think they're there if there's a chance petro plays it's not that difficult for vegas to then
free up the cap space because i think aiden hill is out the door so you think that do you think
that'll happen today i don't know how on earth they do that i agree with you but like 6.25 for
half a decade yeah 2020 2031 is when that contract expires even if you have to pay a little to get
rid of him that's probably what you're doing and you move that so that you can then there's 6.2
five coming off the books and then you got to finagle what else you got to do to uh squeeze
in petro there but it's not like oh i don't think it's dire if they have to have him play because
i don't are we believing those rumors are they true i don't know but if he's done then that
makes it a lot easier for them sure i think they still go the route of getting rid of aiden hill
and then it's like you have the three million dollars of petro on season ending and then six
there and then six so then you're up to like eight million dollars and that means you're
going to go out and get larkin and your tandem okay does larkin which glove does he catch with
his right or left because they have heart and lindbaum and net okay and like that was that was
the achilles heel of this team it was this year they were a good team all year with some injuries
but they couldn't stop the puck and they figured it out for like a month and a half and then
violently did not stop the puck yeah like historically and not stop so don't like aiden
Hill that they wouldn't put him in the net to just give it
a shot in the Stanley Cup. John Tortorella
didn't know he had a backup goalie.
I only have Carter. That's it. You're here
with your clipboard. Enjoy. Now
I got to ask you this then. Okay, so Vegas
we assume Petrangelo probably
won't be back until we hear otherwise. Aiden Hill
maybe out the door? Probably
out the door. Lindbaum, by the way, was really
good in the AHL, I should say. One name I want
to ask you guys about when it comes to Vegas and
moving cap is Thomas Hurdle.
I mean, it's pretty clear that
Thomas Hurdle, who's got
four more years with a partial no trade sorry it's a modified no trade clause he's got a three team
approved list oh wow so he's going to give you three teams he can be traded to and that by the
way exists until two years from now when it becomes a 15 team approved trade list so he has
a 28 team no trade 29 i don't think vegas 28 yeah so weird can you move that with with anderson they
gave up a lot to get them and i'm like oh yeah they should keep them they gave up kind of a lot
to get thomas hurdle uh i think it's a completely different situation i think it's a alley-oop like
uh i think they're they'd be willing to just move on what were his stats this year's counting stats
so i mean like he's not a bad player last year he had 32 goals this past season he had 24 uh goals
and 58 points probably playing i mean he was a minus 17 right that this is not a guy who should
be playing center not anymore had to kind of at times he had a he had a good playoff overall it
was a little unimpressive yeah 22 games uh five goals nine assists for 14 points don't forget he
went eight weeks without scoring yes right and that when he scored it was like oh my god eight
weeks at the primo time of your march 3rd to like late april now crazy do you look at those numbers
that i just threw at you and look at his cap hit and where the and where all these contracts are
going and go you know what maybe they should just keep them i mean yeah you could but again like
what kind of flexibility does vegas want if he's playing a right wing or something on the third
line do you care left you let's give me left wing i mean here's here's the worst part of of it all
what was his average ice time this year for oh my holy lord what was his ice time i that's a
really good question i maybe 15 minutes 12 40 for 6.75 mil yeah man and we know a ticking time bomb
injury right something at any point he could just be done so i mean you get the ltir space but if
you are going to trade him it would better be to a rich team that can handle that so like you did
the thing that uh i sometimes do with puckpedia you're looking at his five on five ice time his
average ice time total was 17 minutes oh that's much much better okay thank you jesse for correcting
me so maybe they list five on five average and then penalty special teams so just to correct you
i'm on the side i'm 50 50 here like i think they could keep this player and be justified doing it
like i don't think it's a totally unreasonable cap hit for what he brings to them but um
i don't i think he's a luxury they can't afford i think one thing i think you said that is really
important is that a third line player who's gonna put up that many goals for you at 6.7
is in the new cap reality not the worst thing in the world it's not and that's kind of what
they call and it gives you net front in on the power play too yeah yeah i think uh i think kelly
mccrimmon is just gonna write in like crayon on his three-team list detroit
because you could have him yeah or you could have larkin for really not that much more yeah
it's a good point okay well vegas is going to be an interesting team to watch they always are
they always are and our free agency covers coverage continues here on sdpn live stream
tonight between 4 30 uh 4 45 to kind of wrap it all up uh but in the meantime we're going to be
covering all the trades, all the re-signings, everything right here.
San Jose has signed Mason Marchment to a big contract.
Holy moly.
Mason Marchment is going to get, are you guys ready for this?
Five years at $7 million apiece.
And I think this makes a ton of sense for a couple of reasons.
First off, you already got Kiefer Sherwood in the trade and then re-signing, right?
At $5.75 million.
That's going to kick in this week.
sorry this this coming year I guess it kicks in today but now you get Mason Marchment as well
and those two guys are big and they're mean and they won't be bullied and you have to expect that
if the Sharks are going to go to the playoffs here pretty soon which I think they want to be
guys are going to take runs at Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith and you know Sam Dickinson and
Michael Mesa and you gotta have some protection for them take it from this grizzled bunch of
fans uh fun loving adorable skilled puppies um is a really fun regular season and most of the
season is the regular season makes for a horrible playoff yeah right um this guy in a aggressive
league in an aggressive division is going to be a battering ram he actually sort of inadvertently
ruined the leaf season by running anthony stole ours and then causing him to yell at his teammates
and then they never stuck up for each other ever again yep and did you mention sherwood you know
yeah i did yeah you did okay i thought so because great minds think alike because as you're doing
the intro i'm like oh and they have sherwood too yeah yeah mean mean mean but like also a
contributor yes he for sure was unbelievable in the playoffs by the way they're both contributed
oh yeah marchman had a not the greatest season last year offensively but it was oh my god split
between the kraken and blue jackets that's a last year last season that's a nightmare duo he played
for both irrelevant franchises what blue jackets east and christy and kraken sorry blue jackets
west kraken east last year the blue jackets bought the blue jackets sold last year the kraken bought
the blue uh the kraken sold neither team knows what they're doing uh now they're going to the
san jose sharks and they know what they're doing going to the moon that's right this is uh this is
really interesting i think it's good for him now jesse in terms of the eye-watering numbers we've
already seen you think about like aj greer at 4.1 and and you know the eric holla deal what was just
announced we'll talk some more about that later on i mean ufas are gonna get paid a lot like i'm
still waiting for that logan stanley deal to come in it's gonna be insane i'm telling you but what
do you think about paying mason marchman seven million dollars and it's for five years five
years yeah it's a slight overpay like i think we should be honest in that and that it isn't i think
the the deal he would get if he was just comfortably resigning with his own team at a reasonable number
because it is free agency and you're bidding against other teams it is a slight overpay for
a guy who's consistently year in year out like 50 points 22 goals is his max in his career man you
know that's not that's the high end of this 30 year old player is 22 goals spending seven million
dollars on that he did have 22 goals in 62 games so maybe there is a higher end maybe he can reach
25 here with the sharks but i think that's just slightly above where you're probably
you want to pay but for a team who is not short on cap space who has the ability to spend i don't
mind them going out and putting in that extra little bit to bring him to the sharks so this
is what we were talking about with the ducks earlier so they have over 40 million in cap
space but so much of it is going to get eaten up by cutter goche and um leo carlson sharks have
39.4 million dollars does that have marchman added to it yet no no okay so it doesn't so you
subtract seven so they still have 32.4 million dollars and then you look at the team there's
really not much work to be done they got to re-sign colin graff well on defense there's a lot
of yeah well yes yes yes but like in terms of re-signing guys yeah colin graff they're going
to be able to do shakir mukhamadul and they're going to be able to do um and then you have
uh probably at least 25 million to add well you also have the celebrini extension to worry about
at some point here i know he's got one more year but you do have to no you do that you don't do
that now oh no no like i mean i mean it's it's not a cap consideration though until next got it
but that's yeah that's something you got to be working on yet like today like at 1201 i'd be
surprised if we didn't get it is when you start talking about that deal so you can't just spend
all willy-nilly because you do need that
cap space for Celebrini and Will Smith
who are eligible for extensions right now.
My guess, pure guess,
is at the end of the day,
the Sharks will have some sort of press conference
and I think the smart thing
to do, if Celebrini were
done, announce it there.
Now I got a story here. Mark Shague, who is
a reporter for the
hockey writers
for Columbus, said that
Mason Marchman did
get into deep contract negotiations with the columbus blue jackets term was the issue not
money so what they're saying is that it is it was that the blue jackets would not go beyond four
years why if you like why just throw in the extra year i know that's that was you're not going to be
at the cap that's weird no one wants to be there that's what are you talking about and you gave up
a second and a fourth to get this guy so you just lit that on fire then that's weird and it's next
year's second you're not going to be good oh boy that's very oh boy that's the case i don't like
that at all yeah i i wonder for blue jackets fans like here's the thing don waddell when this if
this warinski trade happens today we don't know if it will if a kareel marchenko market which
exists but like where is it where's he gonna go he's gotta get a win today big time you might
even get Kirill Marchenko well if you got him re-signed that might restore some hope but I
think the Rwinski thing is is over Don Waddell is spending a lot of reputation uh this week
no kidding it's it's looking it feels a little like hey that was the Eric Tulsky show the whole
time wasn't it I I do want to shout out uh Mason Marchment just for being uh well CJ would be
furious if I didn't mention the fact that he was a Coburg cougar um but also undrafted oh and here
he is getting
$11,000,000,000,000.
Yeah, it's a shame
with Mason Marchment
that it didn't work out
in Toronto.
At the time,
Keefe didn't trust him,
but one of the worst trades
in Leafs history,
Mason Marchment
for Dennis Mulligan.
Man, four games
total for the Leafs.
Four games
and he looked good in them.
It's worth mentioning
he looked good in them.
Mason Marchment
also now becomes
the highest paid shark.
What?
Until Morgan Rielly
gets there.
Logan Couture
doesn't count.
No, he doesn't.
He doesn't count.
So the next highest paid shark
is dimitri orlov at 6.5 million dollars oh they have the money to spend
unless colin graff like gets the most unexpected contract of the day right adam would give him i
love colin graff and i would give him my my love it's orlov at 6.5 and then toffoli at six and
wenberg at six whoa he's the highest paid shark can i just say this look at barclay goudreau
you know didn't want to get traded there was forced out of new york and they don't know what
the hell and and then and then he's like oh well actually this team is pretty great and it's going
to be a team with barclay goudreau keifer sherwood and mason marchman barclay goudreau that's the
open market today he makes like five million easily like it's insane easily that is a crazy
team full of crazy people uh oh it's not fun no they're not a fun team and they did just draft
second and ninth overall too it's just everything's coming up shark that's so i forgot about that so
you take every projected roster that they have and you have to add Stenberg and Verhoff to it
I don't I I don't know if Verhoff goes back to school but Stenberg Stan yeah yeah that is it
that's a look at that roster looks pretty damn good already already Stenberg Celebrini Smith
Toffoli Wenberg Sherwood you know and then you throw in March somewhere in there yeah Misa's
only 19 oh they'll score this is a scary group and you know what their goaltenders nadelkovich
had a comeback season last year ask her off when he's when he's healthy he's looking good that's
five million dollars wrapped up in your goals one of them needs to take the net defense needs a lot
of work defense needs a lot of work but they have kesselring take the net they got him they got him
for a paperclip as you said jesse yes literally pretty crazy like eisenman genius paid them to
get michael kesselring good deal for marchment good deal for the sharks uh and sdpn's uh free
agency coverage continues. We will have more free agency trade resigning videos all day long. And
of course, our live stream 430, 445 on the SDP and YouTube channel today. That will be our podcast.
The LA Kings had one of the best drafts at the NHL, according to all the prospect reports,
but they're old and they just got three times older with Eric Holla, Matt Zuccarello and Corey
perry we'll start with eric holla now i want to ask you jesse have you seen the term for harold
for holla yes okay steve what do you what do you think eric holla got 35 years old left shooting
centerman four years okay i love shooting centerman five per 20 million you know what
well well under that two years 3.5 million per season oh it's not bad right you know what like
I know a lot of people hate the direction of the Kings.
I don't hate that.
38 points in 81 games last year.
I don't hate that.
Matt Zuccarello is an unbelievable contract.
Hayden stopped us before we started this video,
and he's like, he's old, he's not slow.
And he's good.
He's good.
This is going to be a big change for Kaprizov,
who has been playing with Zuccarello for such a long time.
One year, $1 million plus bonuses.
That's it?
So, hot take.
He's going to win a cup this year.
but not with the Kings?
I don't know.
Probably not.
Okay.
Oh, because it's a highly tradable deal?
He's going to be one of the most valuable,
unless LA keeps him.
If LA were to choose to trade this player
at the trade deadline,
you retain half,
so he's half a million dollars,
pro-rated,
and he's Matt Zuccarello while doing it.
He's going to go for a first-round pick.
He could.
He could.
He had 54 points this past season.
Oh, my God.
He was nearly a point a game because it was only 59 games.
He actually had a very good playoff with nine points in eight games.
I would absolutely, if I was a capped out team, Vegas, if I was Florida, if I was a team that wanted to upgrade but needed to do it on the cheap in terms of the cap, Matt Zuccarello is a dream come true.
Now, if he just stays a king, that's boring.
well that's boring boo so okay so then the last one is cory perry back to los angeles after being
traded back to tampa yes for the playoff run obviously he didn't make the finals this year
which was a bummer everybody was sad about it but um cory perry's 42 already i think i believe the
oldest it's either him or brent burns the oldest player in the nhl so i i'm i'm curious about this
not because i don't understand what cory perry brings to a team but is this guy another trade
deadline chip or is la actually they should be fighting for the playoffs should they not
they're trying to be competitive he 100 or sorry go ahead go ahead go ahead well he 100
could be a trade chip but i i think we're all forgetting how good um uh cory perry was uh with
the kings he finished the season uh sixth sorry in power play points on the kings and he was traded
like part way through if i'm not mistaken because i remember shooting a video right here in this
seat um when he was traded i think he was third in power play points on the kings wow okay all
right so like he's still that's not good though no but like he's still very useful in his role
no that's good for him i just mean the kings that's not correct oh yeah well okay so what's
the money one year one mil maybe some bonuses but we don't quite know yet all right and what
was holla again uh 3.5 two years 3.5 per 3.5 so for 5.5 million dollars you've added perry
zuccarello holla ah i know it's the hip and cool thing to hate on ken holland i think that's tidy
i think that's real good it makes the kings better well and i think it's interesting too
when you add the fact that you know these guys are on short-term deals uh drew dowdy will not
be signed to an extension they said that i know and so is this the last hurrah of an old king's
team where they then fully turn it over to the next the next thing i mean you probably ought to
okay very few people are signed beyond next season i think the kings have a kopitar sized
hole down the middle of their lineup that they haven't addressed yet this offseason so i'm unsure
of how good the Kings can be next season because I don't know if Byfield can immediately step into
that role and fill every gap that Kovatar left behind I don't know if he can do that so I just
don't know they'll be competitive they'll be chasing a playoff spot but I think they might
have a small ceiling a high floor because of all the pieces they do have like Kempe and Panarin
and Fiala and Armia and like I think the additions are good it's just I don't think their ceiling is
too high okay well I would agree with that I would agree with that they have three forwards and three
D's signed beyond two seasons there's gonna be some turnover in LA it's yeah MP Fiala byfield
uh followed by brant clark cody cc and mikey anderson no goalies wow yeah man so this is the
last year before the big changes still paying mike richards by the way still of course of course
yeah i'm i am i am very interested in this now of course they've got uh mikey anderson signed
long term they got brant clark signed long term um you know cc and edmondson will expire in the
next couple of years but yeah this this could be a massive massive change do you think that they
are able to go out and get a big centerman jesse with what they have or do you just kind of leave
it and go this is our team this we will fall where we fall where we were in a weak division last year
it might be weak again this year we don't really know what do you think ken holland strategy is
yeah i honestly i don't see them going out and trying to make a big shake up to chase that like
i see a little bit of patience here with ken holland and seeing what they have with the core
that they currently have there and just playing it out and then making decisions maybe halfway
through the season towards the trade deadline or maybe December if they're falling short or if
they're way ahead of expectations. But I think they're going to have a pretty quiet offseason.
OK, now let's can we bring that roster up one more time? OK, let's look about I just want to
ask you guys this tradable assets at the deadline should they want to. OK, if that's the way that
it goes, Panarin, I think at a year left at 11 million, I think a lot of people would want
He controls it, but yes.
I think Byfield and Kepi obviously a part of the future.
Fiala is a guy that I'm interested in.
Does he move or do they keep him if they're out of it?
I think two years left beyond this one at 7.875 with the way he scores.
I mean, that could be extraordinarily valuable piece.
Trevor Moore is 31.
Can you believe that?
No, I can't.
I hate that a lot.
4.2 million dollars.
You know, obviously, Drew Dowdy is not going anywhere, but his deal expires at the end of this year.
Someone will overpay like crazy for Armia.
I'm sure CeCe and Edmondson would be deadline, you know, guys.
And here's the thing.
If you need goaltending at the deadline, you've got Kemper and Forsberg on expiring deals, as you guys mentioned.
So, yeah, I mean, it could be just a, hey, maybe they go on a run, but maybe they just harvest.
I think they'll be too close to a playoff spot to be like sellers.
Like, I don't think you're selling guys on longer term deals, but I can see them like standing pad.
And, you know, the Scott Lawton addition at the trade deadline is because they were very weak down the middle.
and now they'll be losing Lawton and Kopitar retired.
So I don't see much improvement over where they were last year,
but that doesn't mean they'll be a bad team.
And lost to know.
Like that's so much defensive duty that falls at the feet of who, right?
Like Byfield and company.
You need Byfield to get more offensive numbers too.
Like you need to give him more chances.
I'm just looking at them like, what are you?
Yeah.
Yeah.
What are you?
they're the well okay if you're they're boring like their roster their coach like it's boring
who do you have to hope for then like labia lets the coach he's a defensive guy likes the old guys
at hall has played for him clearly well luckily he's got an old team yeah and they played really
well defensively last year in that first round series against the avalanche like they they were
able to keep things low scoring because that's the only way they could kind of stay in those games so
maybe they'll just kind of play that game again where they they went to so many darn ot games last
year yes they did i don't know if it's a record or whatever they did but maybe they just try and
run that back where it's just hey let's just hang in these games with great defensive play
and then see what we can do in those moments within one goal game yeah it's just full of fine
yeah sdpns uh i almost said trade deadline free agency coverage continues we've got a whole bunch
of trades and stuff like i'm looking at the list right now there's been a couple of signings while
we've even made this video um and i'm going to surprise you guys with them in the next video
that we do because it's going to be great um and of course our live stream tonight uh between 4 30

We're going to talk about, and Steve and Jesse don't know this,
a hockey team that always makes intelligent decisions who do you think it is
and there are two depth moves carolina hurricanes there's a good team that makes a lot of good
decisions okay we're at hurricanes panthers vegas dallas until this past week um always
makes intelligent decisions colorado there's one maybe be in there there's one more who am i
missing which former greyhounded doobus got uh no it's the tampa bay lightning why did i forget
the tampa bay lightning yes absolutely i answer your question with tanner janelle okay well that
was just the one thing though jesse you know what'd you know about that uh they gave up a draft
class don't don't even look yes they did yes they did now these are two free agent signings and they
are two depth signings yes that's why i wanted to include them both in the video okay so the first
one is former leaf oh no he's gonna tear up our leaf ilia mckay of no oh how many years how much
money it's a fun game he's so interesting because he got overpaid like crazy in vancouver and now
he's like almost undervalued dan millstein's on on one i'm gonna say six years okay jesse what
do you think what the money no no yeah years and money years and money six years 4.5 per okay
jesse 3.5 3.85 mil damn four years okay so not bad that's really kind of roughly what he signed
for in vancouver is it not well i guess no it's less it's less so it was such a it was an overpay
man now to me he's made some good money in his career and you kind of go to this and go i'm i
just need to get out of chicago and i want to start winning undrafted players that yeah tampa's
a good place to do that shoot i i love it for tampa which means i hate it the next guy who i'm
heartbroken about oh no oh no no no no no Scott Lawton no oh other other heartbroken guy is that
who you thought too did you think it was Lawton I did no not him guy that I would be heartbroken
about he was on one of my favorite teams this year the ducks yep Jeff VL Jeff VL oh nice now
good for him so I thought it was Lawton don't act like anybody knew who Jeff VL was heading
into last year yeah no nobody unless you're a ducks fan nobody did nobody but he was great
we had the opportunity hold on years and money uh years and money we um three years three mil
jesse 2.8 2.5 how many years uh four years five four years wow they love a long deal they do
well and and i gotta tell you jeffiel was awesome for the ducks his defensive abilities are
incredible watching him shut down uh connor mcdavid was was a feat to behold like this guy
he's something special tampa's getting a really good player so 2020 2021 he had 11 games played
no points the next season 34 games five points the next season four games no points the next
season five games no points boston last year 10 games no points he goes to anaheim he goes oh
three goals seven assists 10 points and then in the playoffs four points in 12 games
and like you said did a really good job against uh connor mcdavid i said jesse did but i saw it
like adam said i was there adam i was gonna i said it like 20 seconds ago he's looking at the
other guy well listen i don't know how this happened if you were step it up if you were
watching my streams this is free agent frenzy expect better i'll try i'll try harder uh if
you're if you're you know i mean if you were watching my streams in the playoffs you already
know that um uh you know i'm a huge fan of the way this guy plays i think you're right connor
the connor mcday you know that beating edmonton was an unbelievable win you know what i kind of
worry about though i worry about bears uh first of all i worry about playing them in the in this
in this conference candy at halloween but there's a lot of talent leaving anaheim oh i don't fully
i don't at all understand what pat verbeek is doing so vl gone zellweger traded uh-huh
truba likely gone unless they re-sign him in the last minute here gouda's gone and that's their
captain yeah and then i understand it but he's their captain he's their captain and then uh
john carlson and mctavish oh mctavish dude is a crazy amount of turnover for a team that did
very well last that's a lot of that's a lot of pieces yeah now they've got some big re-signings
to make but i i saw the vl thing and i thought man that'll be tough to replace i know they love
ross johnston but apparently he's gone to saint louis so you know i don't i mean listen anaheim
got thrust right back into the spotlight and what happens is when you're a good young team and
nobody knows who some of these guys are and then they watch in the playoffs they go oh oh is that
guy a free agent i should sign that guy that's what's happening but i am curious about what they
do i know aj greer's there but like that's it adam's a true ducks truther like we need to get
you the the mask beak thing i want because i know that considered like yeah we're hyping him up and
yeah he's not gonna be on the ducks anymore no they're going to miss that and that was one of
their biggest assets in the playoffs being able to throw at a shutdown line that's lower in the
lineup that's anchored by VL's
defensive abilities, and now you're taking
that off the team, and Tampa's gaining
that. Tampa, I think, has set
themselves up beautifully. I want you to
imagine this, Jess.
VL, Gord, Mikheyev,
and Mikheyev's speed. Holmberg?
VL, Holmberg,
Mikheyev?
Just get some more
former Leafs. I hate it.
I do want to
say something, because
vl i want to try to find his career earnings um they're they can't be he was in the ahl
oh my god estimated career earnings according to puck media 2.41 million so oh he's about to
make that per year for the next half decade but here's the problem the lightning are going to
make him earn that shit because he is not typical he's not a huge fighter he had less than 50 penalty
minutes last year but he'll do it i remember him and pesetta had like a blood feud they sure did
yes yeah yeah yeah but he's going to be going toe-to-toe with the panthers every time and every
time he has anything to say to anybody he's going to get mobbed right yep it's your every single
time you play that team in that division it will be a bloodbath and you will be at the center of
it i'd like to throw something out for the tampa bay lightning um that maybe people around the
haven't noticed but they probably know is on the radar nikita kucherov is eligible for an extension
today he's a ufa at the end of this season and nikita kucherov was making only 9.5 million
dollars like that's a crazy deal for what he did over the length of that contract the heart trophies
in their compass in there and now he needs a new deal and i wonder if he's going to try and take
them to the bank if kaprizov is 17 yeah now i know it's a tax-free state so tax-free in florida
at 17 would be a big raise on what kaprizov is making in minnesota but if it's any it has to be
that he's nikita kucherov oh my god that could be crazy and what do you do if you're tampa besides
just give him a blank check like i mean like are we getting into a scenario here where like he rolls
into camp like Stamkos did a couple years ago
and go, oh, I'm really pissed I didn't get a call.
And you know he wouldn't hold back.
What am I talking about? Who are their
Tampa Bayers? Can you imagine? Yes.
Vividly. If they don't want
him and don't think he's worth that money,
I don't know. Things could get spicy,
but I don't think it's going to get spicy.
But it's going to be spicy with the guy
who could have a statue outside the building.
Here's what Stamkos was not coming off of.
A 130-point
Hart Trophy winning season.
It's true.
Yeah.
kucherov's his last four seasons 130 121 144 and 113 and that doesn't include any of the
three consecutive cup finals seasons where he actually barely played um it's just stupid if
in any other market like this is a conversation we're talking about we get to training camp we're
like kucherov still not signed and it happened with stamkos for sure but i'm just i'm trying to
get that role in here a little it's like hey what's that number gonna be welcome to the real
nhl just be like yeah what's that number because it could be 18 million and you know what it should
be a lot it should be 18 it should be a fortune he should be among the top top paid players he
should it's the number one yep yep you know what ilya mikhayev and jeff vl you guys can take
discounts i'll be the one getting the big money thank you very much i think that's what it's got
to be anyway our free agency coverage continues we've got more to announce there was even a leaf
thing while we're recording this video so we will mention that uh in the next one um and in the
meantime uh keep your eyes on this channel because we are doing a live stream as well which will be
our wednesday podcast between 4 30 and 4 45 expected start although you never know free agency
is kind of crazy we'll continue with the videos jack rossovic is a toronto maple leaf a year after
it was supposed to happen uh brad treliving was very interested in jack rossovic last summer and
jack's uh contract just it just never got signed he joined the oilers late last year like while
the season was starting it was kind of crazy yes and that was a very odd set of circumstances
part of that was uh the leafs saying i think we're interested no we're not i think we're
interested no we're not and that was very brad treliving they're very uh very interested this
year. And Jack Rossovic is obviously now a Toronto Maple Leaf in the next two years at
$4 million per season. Now, the question with Jack Rossovic is what role does he play? There
have been reports out there that the Leafs have interest in Colton Sissons. It was actually
reported that the deal was done, but it is not done as of this recording. Oh, I very much like
both. And Jack Rossovic brings a couple of things. First off, with Michele and Robertson gone,
it gives you a little bit of depth down the lineup. Number two, gentlemen, he shoots right
And he wins 53% of his face-off draws when he does take them.
Yeah, he was sixth on the Oilers in face-offs taken last year.
But he did join late.
Yeah, he ended up getting into 69 games, which is nice.
Yeah.
But it's not 82.
And how many goals?
And this is a key.
He had 21 after having 22.
So that gives them a player.
So here's the difference with Michele and Robertson.
Michele and Robertson, you could play them in one spot.
and yeah you could expect one thing each of them had their own thing michelli a little bit of
playmaking robertson a little bit of goal scoring rossovic a lot more valuable in different scenarios
you're basically taking that same money and going we're going to spend it this way jesse
your thoughts on what jack rossovic is going to bring to this lineup my initial look at this is
that's a good depth piece of exactly what they need in terms of a forward in their depth right
handed shooting guy who can play center the four million dollars is i'm like okay i wish it was a
little less than that it's fine it's quite a raise over the 1.5 it was making last year but that was
under very specific circumstances and four million dollars i think maybe i just have to recalibrate
my brain on what four million dollars is i think is an upgrade on michelle or robertson if you're
looking at him in that regard so i don't mind the deal at all for the least i'm right-handed i can
play center i scored over 20 goals each of the last two seasons you're paying me four million
dollars yeah sure i think it's i think it really is as simple as that now he is a defensive
liability he's not he's not gonna kill penalties and this is what i was trying to figure out in my
own video in real time a big problem last year is matthews didn't score enough goals well the
reason for that is he started way too many of his shifts in the defensive zone okay well there's
John Tavares, who he's not a penalty killer, right?
You can trust him to win face-offs,
but you don't really want to be starting him
in the defensive zone.
Yep.
I'm not eager to give Jack Roslevic defensive zone starts,
which is why when you mentioned Colton Sissons,
I'm like, yes, please sign that man.
Please.
You have Steven Lorenz as an option
who they played at fourth line center in games
where the team was awful.
Or they had an injury.
It just didn't matter anymore.
Yeah.
You know what I mean?
I know Dakota Joshua can do center
if you really need him to they have a lot of face-off options on this team which is good
but you know for your dream uh I know of uh John Tavares you know at the 3c either being 3c or 2.5c
yeah can you make Roslevic and John Tavares your 2.5 c's I'm not sure you can I don't think so
I don't think so I think he's a third line lock you know what I mean but they needed more right
shots in the lineup we mentioned this like Nylander's the only one you just want somebody
who's a little more versatile he'll be on the second unit second unit of the power play can
win you some face-offs will not kill penalties for you i i totally understand what you're saying
jesse so yeah and like carolina this is a player who he did end up playing nine games for carolina
not this past season obviously because they won the cup uh but the year before and he he didn't
get into every game they don't fit he didn't fit carolina who is a very smart hockey team they also
yeah but like they also play a very specific way and you're like huh him with carolina i'm not sure
i get that him with edmonton oh and like i think i i think his stock would have been higher and his
time in edmonton would have gone better had he gone there from the jump he didn't really miss
a ton of time but he did miss camp and like exhibition games and stuff like that i had his
game log up where did it go he had one assist in his first seven games with the oilers and that was
it uh and then he goes on to have a more than adequate uh offensive production nhl season
on a team where he should have let me throw this at you okay this this person remains unsigned but
let me throw this at you um jack ross to pick at four million scott lawton at 5.5 who do you take
oh i would have preferred scott lawton i sound like such a homer but yeah i think scotty if
that if those like i don't know if that's on the table i have both it sounds it doesn't sound like
scott lawn wanted to come back i know that he had interest in signing in la i know that he would
have come back to trump but i don't think under the true living administration would he have come
back yeah i don't know what this or this is what i'm asking the reason i'm asking is we don't
quite still know what the toronto management value right and you look at some of the edge
stats of ross of it he clearly could skate but he's not a he's not the fastest skater in the
world but he's one of the quickest to his fastest speed which is more important in hockey than your
top speed i think when we talk about like where this fits in like i look at a scotty lot and go
they could still insert him in a lineup like this if they wanted to go that that extra 1.5 million
dollars is for a guy who's really good defensively yes hey who did jack roslevic played with for
four years
and whose contract
expires in two years when Roslovich
expires Columbus
right Austin Matthews
Adam what oh Zach
Wierenski oh
get out of here maybe they're buds
get out of here maybe they're buds
I don't know maybe they're buds all right now I want to
ask you about Edmonton in this because they obviously lose
a guy that scored 21 goals for them last year
I mean I don't think there was any
hints that they were trying to resign him
if they had discussions they were minimal
but i wonder about edmonton and does this make them more likely or less likely to bring in a
guy like adam henrik again because he's apparently in the scott lot range of five to five and a half
million dollars he's been there a long time contributes a lot down there but he's getting
older well we're sitting here at we're recording this at 1 38 p.m eastern and like i've already
been getting texts from people like stan bowman is not out of his bed yet um he's he's gonna get
left without a dance partner here and the Oilers are just on this never-ending hamster wheel of
trying to find depth scoring now like I'm not like Dickinson was a good signing but he doesn't
provide depth scoring no ah good defensive the occasion like not as much as Rozovic but he brings
far more defensive acumen than Rozovic like you could definitely make the argument uh actually
it is just true that they need a player like Dickinson more than Rozovic but at some point at
i i just stopped myself from saying you got to take the offensive burden off of leon and connor
no you don't that is why you have them yes yes that is why you have them okay so the reason
you're not winning games is not because connor and leon are doing enough it's because you can't
get the puck out of your damn net that's what the oilers have to figure out this offseason
not jack roslevic they could afford to lose okay all right got it now on the toronto side
obviously jesse uh austin matthews and jack ross are bigger friends and are they and i just you
know i remember that from last year uh they're very when we were preparing for him to sign here
and then he didn't you know the zacharensky thing is out there but we can leave that for now i mean
the leafs are going to sign people that are useful to the team and austin wants to win
but it kind of helps though right if people think that's silly then like you don't understand how
humans work yeah like you're bringing in for the captain of your team the face of the franchise
the guy this whole thing is built around you're bringing in somebody he likes that matters it it
100 matters and who was matthew's setup man it was a speedy right-handed winger like we were
maybe going in the wrong direction here like uh oh yeah he's gonna play is he is he second line
center is he third line center how much center does he place maybe as you talked about like
matthews doesn't have a winger on the roster right now what if that's one of them you think
first line right wing for roslevic at least he gets a shot at it at times i can see that a hundred
percent or like out of camp like out of camp you just need good enough right like especially when
it's sloppy and you're scoring a million goals a day and some guy you've never heard of is leading
the league with 10 goals uh through october like all hockey played between the beginning of season
in halloween is anarchy yeah him out of dude last year it was supposed to be domey and then it was
michelle like roslevic i think is adequate and i like the idea of if the guy on the left wing
is the true setup guy and he's just i have two options to feed and roslevic all obviously will
defer sometimes to austin because he's austin but there's another shot that's a threat next to
austin and maybe that opens him up even more and i can see that really working a lot of people can
he make plays rossovic oh yeah a lot a lot of people are going to immediately think gavin
mckenna but like i'll i'll throw it to easton cowan now i i would think mckenna would be more
in a scoring role of himself so i don't think i don't think the three of them would work i think
you'd have to get in some sort of other setup guy just to pass those guys the fuck so that could be
cowboy it's it's worth mentioning that rossovic has more goals than assists in each of his last
two seasons but that is an outlier in his career his career he's got 123 goals 173 assists for
296 points interesting okay well it you know that the picture still remains pretty unclear
for the Toronto Maple Leaf Zach Rorinsky's names out there but I will mention this
Darren Drager is reporting that Rorinsky and uh uh sorry Rorinsky's agent and Don Waddell spoke
this morning in order to clear the air
over whatever happened last night
and that there is no push to move him just yet
and that Wierenski is comfortable
coming to camp in the fall.
How likely do we think that is?
Over under two and a half hours he gets dealt.
Yeah, the time to trade him is now,
but we'll see what happens.
As free agency day continues,
this is Canada Day fun.
And by the way, all the trades,
all the signings,
we're going to try to get to as many as we can
and we will have the podcast.
It'll be a live stream podcast
directly from this SDPN YouTube channel
at between 4 and 4.45.
Sorry, 4.30 and 4.45 this afternoon.
We will see you there.
Uh-oh.
It looks like San Jose's opponents are in Truba.
Oh.
End the video.
End the delete.
Four years, $8.25 million.
That's roughly what he made on his last contract.
He's going to get four more years,
but he leaves Orange County for Northern California.
i i think he looks boy i think he looks better in teal
no this is this is a little bit of like not just pacific division but california hockey spice here
this is interesting there's a theme would you not agree keifer sherwood mason marchman today
and then jake truba do you think the sharks are trying to get tougher uh just a tad that's uh
that's a mean looking team also barclay grudroy is there too and that's not that he's no joke yeah
Now, at some point, and this was a big problem that the young Leafs had, you got to stick up for yourself.
Yeah, this is the problem.
They would always get a babysitter.
Yeah, but these guys are actual players.
The Leafs didn't get good players.
The Leafs got guys who were tough, who you couldn't really trust in the lineup.
And I think you can trust Jake Truba.
A lot of people, Jesse, are really down on Jake Truba, especially the way he left New York.
And I understand sometimes that maybe a player's advanced analytics aren't great, but he played pretty damn well with Jackson Lacombe.
i don't know i really liked him in the playoffs last year yeah and i still believe that there's
a little winnipeg uh jake truba still in there like we we think about him through those rangers
years where he's throwing flying elbows through the air at opponents and all that but he's still
a really good puck carrier he can break the puck out of his own zone extremely well if you need
help on the power play he can do that too i think there's a lot of offensive capabilities in truba
as well as decent, smart defensive play.
In 2019, the 18-19 season with Winnipeg,
he played a full 82 games and had 50 points.
I don't think that player's in there.
But with the Rangers in 21-22, he had 11 goals, 39 points.
We know that player's in there because last year he had 10 goals and 35 points.
That is a more than reasonable ask for him in San Jose.
Now, I don't think the contract will age the best.
I don't know if Trouba is the guy that we're going to look at and say,
he's probably worth this at age 34 or 35 36 seasons where he's signed to because it is a bit
of it's a but it's only a four-year deal so it's not too bad but i can see him at the end of that
four years just calling it like quits because he plays a hard style and a lot of minutes there
on his body so i don't know how it's going to age but these first couple years i think it'd be
really good for san jose they need the defensive help and i think he'll be good i'm excited for
this uh first off i'm excited for his return to anaheim because we got we i want to get to the
anaheim angle in a second but when you go into to play the sharks at sap in the last five years
you've been able to basically run them over and then celebrini showed up and he might make you
pay a little bit a lot but you're not you're not quite there uh with guys like mario ferraro
walking out the door they've got orlov under contract for one more year truba coming in
potentially morgan riley that's still out there i mean you're getting a lot of veteran back there
to go along with a guy like sam dickinson and you know the way that truba was able to be a leader
because he's you know all accounts a really good guy obviously he was the captain in new york he
wore a letter in in uh in anaheim if i'm not mistaken as well and then you go in and you got
another young team that's on the rise that's exciting i mean this truba deal is going to take
him through the first window of seller the first cup window of celebrating his career that's kind
i was sick and he's a mentor guys like great for him what is confusing about this is both
anaheim and san jose need this player yeah right the difference is anaheim is losing them and now
there's a giant hole on their d court still at like 2 p.m eastern um and their divisional rival
gets to fill it i don't think the money was there for truba in anaheim at this price like he's
getting a raise over his last contract which is the prime years contract of his life and i know
the salary cap goes up but i don't know if they would have been willing to go 8.25 especially
with the deals that they have to do with carlson and goche right there were some whispers this
morning that carlson and goche aren't necessarily going to get done today that's fine i don't think
it is you don't have a decor sure but you can always figure that one out well with who i mean
money is there like we did always say that about the leafs and they never could um but i i i want
to ask about that because the ducks what are their strengths in the playoff how deep they were
you know if if hellison wasn't good enough then zellweger could go well zellweger's gone now um
uh carlson ran the power play took over from jackson lacombe he's gone lacombe is now going
to be the guy um and then you've got truba gone who was sort of the he was the big mean guy playing
next to jackson lacombe i'm there's three guys under contract here pat verbique what's you just
made the second round we're supposed to be getting better what's going on both i think both of you
are really low on pat pat verbeek's off season so far if it uh yes i'm i'm pro the direction
they're going yeah and i'm anti whatever they've done today which is nothing by the way right right
which that's bad right that's generally you do stuff when you don't have a team he doesn't have
a team you need those to compete in a team league yeah it's bad that he doesn't have a team like
that that's that's what i'm just trying to emphasize but like sharks though you shouldn't
just make acquisitions to make acquisitions they have to be the right guy the right cap hits of
course if this isn't something you can comfortably fit you don't just sign true but because you got
to do something right no no yeah i agree with you but what i'm saying what i'm saying is the right
guy is about to sign with another team well right because that's how free agency works yeah right
but like the free agency i don't know it's not my way to build a hockey team these days i think
smart trading is that's valid well what are they going to do right like i mean they do have assets
to uh to trade and i really like their um how they've drafted i thought i thought 2026 they
did a great job they did they did oh so okay i'm just i'm just not concerned about the future of
the ducks like you guys are and their direction well i'm not i'm rooting for them yeah they were
my guys so i need them to get back otherwise i look like a one-shot wonder here uh i also look
at um uh morgan riley and go okay is it more likely now that he goes to anaheim and or over
san jose because both of those teams are on his no trade list and you know again as much as they
don't have true but the ducks have 40 million and they've got a you know it might take 25 of it to
re-sign um goche and uh leo carlson that's still a lot of extra money might be more yeah like i
this is there's stuff to to figure out here so very very curious about how this goes uh sdpn's
coverage continues san jose i think hit this out of the park here like they're having a good day
for the next couple years of this trooper deal out of year four like i was saying like i'm not
sure about year four but like this is what you do right now with macklin celebrini you go get him a
defenseman like this and they don't have any defenseman this is beautiful for san jose you
should be very happy it's worth noting that the people who are in the know with the mason marchman
deal are like hey uh that's actually really good value for this player like there's a lot of people
that are like well that's way too much money for mason marchman i'm like i don't know if you're
right on that one san jose's dollars are different than other teams dollars they have the space for
this they're fine yeah yeah anyway well you go to sign these good yeah and the cap's gonna keep
going up yeah that's that's what i'm curious about man the the the then you got celebrini
does he sign his extension today i would love it he could purely for the content and then you got
will smith does he sign his extension today here's here's the difference that it's pressing for the
ducks to get one or both of those guys done today because they have a decor to fill out it's the
sharks don't need to do that they don't care yeah they're they're they're easy all right well
Well, SDPN's free agency coverage continues.
Now, remember, we've got our live stream tonight between 4.30 and 4.45.
And it looks like the Toronto Maple Leafs may be close to signing a goaltender.
So look out for that video very soon.
Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer.
That's why every step and dollar raised matters.

register today at pmcfwalk.ca mediocre goalies be getting paid is the saying um that's what
everybody says right right it is not actually okay now listen i say this with love in my heart
but the Stuart Skinner signing in Winnipeg is notable not only because Stuart Skinner's been
in the conference or the Stanley Cup final a couple times but because Connor Hellebuck's
apparently on his way out the door and so Stuart Skinner is going to Winnipeg because obviously we
know Connor Hellebuck's gonna go that's what we think anyway two years three and a half per what
do you think boy you're gonna go from he's a boy actually yeah he is man yeah you're gonna go from
connor hellebuck to stuart skinner now darren dreger was was out there going now this doesn't
mean yes it does darren stop it we all we all know what's happening here um and actually what
we are seeing is is a bit of a tap into the brakes with warensky recently in the last few minutes
which i i go two and a half hours until that deal happens um and now we're seeing it with
hellebuck as well listen like this isn't a catastrophic deal for stewart skinner because
3.75 is no longer a catastrophic amount of money it's still significantly below tristan jari uh
but like here's the fact last year with pittsburgh he was 12 9 and 5 with an 8 8 5 save percentage
what about edmonton he was i'm surprised he played this many games in edmonton he was 11
8 and 4 with an 891 which actually legitimately they should have just kept him yeah of course
they should have just they'd be big players today keep jari out of it they should have just kept him
he would have been their playoff starter oof what a mess like i think about this in the context of
the Oilers less than the Jets and that's not how I should be looking at it here's the thing like
when you have a top five goalie in the world which is insulting for Hellebuck it's top three
probably maybe even top one unless you're Jesse then he's washed um that goalie kind of becomes
your identity if the Jets end up trading Hellebuck which I think they will your identity changes the
kind of team you are changes and you gotta figure things out a little differently you don't have
superman back there anymore no one's there to save the day it's gotta be you it's got it you
gotta make life a little easier for your goalie because if you treat stuart skinner and eric
comrie the way that you treat connor hellebuck you're going to die jesse do you think that
affects josh norris's point totals next year josh norris norrisy i mean that's that's valid right
like harder to play offensive defenseman when you're having to bail out your goalie a little
so i i'm probably in the minority here that this leaves their options open to keeping hellebuck
because i don't think it's too bad if your backup goalie is 3.75 stewart skinner it's not and if
$8 million, Hellebuck is your starting goaltender.
I think that's fine if you're spending that much on your goalies
when one of them is Hellebuck.
And Stuart Skinner, I think, is an upgrade on a backup goalie.
I think he's better than what a backup goalie should be.
I think he could play a 1B role in most systems.
So if this is what they end up with in training camp,
it's not bad at all.
I didn't realize Eric Homery was actually out of a contract.
He has a UFA.
Yeah, he unfollowed the Jets this morning.
Oh, he's done.
on NHL follow
tracker had that one. So that's
how that's done. I'm just so I'm a little
confused. I don't know if
Skinner played 50 games last
year. Oh, yeah, he was
playing. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that's
too much. It's also the fourth time
he's done that. I'm a
little I think unsure is the better word
about how the Jets are going to perform
this upcoming season because they took such a big
drop off from what they were
in the President's Trophy year to what
they were last year and that is due to just you're missing you lost some pieces from year to year
but they just i don't know if they've done anything yet to make me believe that they're
going to be back into a playoff team unless hellebuck is just incredible and it doesn't
allow any goals yeah they're incredibly incomplete it's kind of crazy they're not done it is crazy
how that fall has happened though yeah now let's switch gears and let's talk about sammy arison
who a week ago was a leaf and he was a part of the joseph wall thing uh trade but you know
ultimately sometimes you got to trade contracts uh because you only got you know the limited 50
contract slots and i think that's why he was included toronto then dealt him to ottawa and
i think they got a sixth round pick out of it which is fifth which is incredible business
considering the fact that they were never going to sign him now when you find out what he's going
to make you can understand why toronto was not going to sign him other than you know his play
uh two years 2.2 million dollars with the senator so he's gonna back up lenis uh and sam arison when
carter hart was taken out of the league for reasons we know a couple of years ago had a pretty good
season well even before that like but here's the thing what were the numbers before and then and
then go to the numbers what happened so he was an 899 in his first 12 games then i believe it was
the heart season where arson had to play a completely unhinged 51 games that was never
supposed to happen because after heart it was arson and oh okay let's put felix sandstrom in
823 unplayable let's put cal peterson in 863 unplayable let's put ivan fedotov in 811
and unplayable so urson they just played the complete wheels off him he had an 890 which was
by far uh the best goalie then these past two seasons in 883 and last year he was an 870 which
is utter misery i'm not surprised he got a contract because he's still like 26 he's played
too many games for this point in his career he was on the four nations roster like he's obviously
highly thought of and uh would have would have the connection to all mark i am surprised he got a
raise jess ottawa was a team you followed pretty closely last year and then in the playoffs
goaltending was their achilles heel except for the playoffs because lenis was a standout in the
playoffs yeah uh i don't like it on the surface in that that's exactly where you struggled with
their team besides goaltending they have so many they were so good last year and levy marilinen
isn't an option anymore yeah and when you consider this is the guy you're going with over
your non-options it doesn't feel like you're making a smart bet well i feel like you should
have got you should have went with something that was a little more sure for the role behind
almost is the money waiver protection too because who's gonna who's gonna who's gonna
i think you're good like if because levy marylinan is 23 and is an rfa and if you are going to
resign him i know you say he's a non-option uh and you're probably right but like this clearly
the organization believes in him if levy's going to come in and try to take a job and you want to
send sam arison down who's claiming him at that right but you like there it's a non-option like
you can't start the year with that being your plan because that was your plan last year and
for the times he had to be your starter and your backup it wasn't good at all so you are doing a
disservice to your fan base and your in your organization if that's your option but this
isn't a good secondary option i would have liked somebody with a little more proven track record
yeah in that role because that role sunk you so it is very important for your team airson as a
pure backup i think could be something like i think it could be good for him i think it could
be good for the sins there's a lot of work to do he's played the second most games out of goalies
from his draft class behind lucas dostol um he's played too much he was never he's a fifth round
pick from 2018 like he was never meant to play the amount of games that he currently has and i wonder
if he had a more normal reasonable career path if we think of him a little more highly
yeah but when opportunity knocks you got to take it next man up okay so sdpn's uh free agency will
continue and obviously we've got our live stream tonight that's going to count as our podcast for
this week and or at least on wednesday's podcast for this week and we are going to start at around
4 30 or 4 45 so be sure to tune in for that we will see you then devin levi and a seventh pick
to edmonton for a third rounder do we know what year both of them are 2028 oh okay so a couple
years from now the goal the oilers get their man is what people said i like that risk for the
oilers i mean not even risk like because he doesn't make anything it's a it's a project
um what an unfortunate end to all of this for buffalo this he was supposed to be the guy he was
he was supposed to be the guy and like you didn't get a great return for sam reinhardt but there's
this goalie who's a seventh round pick who's involved in that trade and he might end up being
awesome and it looked like he was going to be awesome and looked like he was going to be their
starting goalie and now he like can't even get into ahl games um i sincerely hope this guy goes
to edmonton and he finds his uh his game i have a question for the two of you because i don't have
the answer okay why did they have to do this right now do you know who the oilers i think the buffalo
sabers obviously the oilers i think the sabers were probably offered a third round pick and
thought why not um i think it was edmonton that had to do this today yeah so but like why would
the sabers be willing to just give up on because you got an offer for him and you might as well
he's an rfa really that's the reason they're trading him before he has absolutely no value
left so he played 52 games in the ahl this past season which is a ton they're just giving this
guy the net how many how many is that 52 it's a it's a what it's a ton it's a ton ton and he was
23 20 and 9 with a 904 save percentage like i don't know so so okay there's an answer there's
so it's an escape hatch for devin levi because the promise of him being the next one you they
probably feel that he's not going to live up to that yep so let's go recoup a third round pick
for the seventh round pick that we drafted and we sold magic beans to the edmonton oilers and it
was somewhat contentious i there was a clip that went around i think it was much it's either much
earlier this season or it was last season um i think it was with rochester americans coach
mike leone yeah i know the clip and he was basically just like he needs to be better yeah
right and they're pushing this guy they're pushing them they're pushing them which i
totally understand for what he's supposed to be um he ain't it and like you know we keep talking
about canada struggling so bad in net and whatever happened to the goalie factory that was the
province of quebec i mean this guy was supposed to be the medicine uh for that he was supposed
to be the antidote and now here he is 24 years old he didn't play a game in the nhl last year
it's i love this risk for the oilers because there's no risk they will not miss that third
pick who gives a damn right really all they did is they moved up or rather the sabers moved up
in the 2028 draft yeah this makes so much sense for the oilers like i think the obvious is the
tremendous upside for the oilers on just like hey send that draft pick out you might have you might
have picked up where buffalo left off and you might have be able to develop this into a really
good goaltender it's just the buffalo size the questions for me but i i understand your reasoning
on like hey let's get out of this can i could i could see buffalo um trading the pick in some
sort of package for someone else because like a boat's a boat the mystery box could be anything
it could even be a boat okay do you want this goalie who i don't know or i have another idea
i'm gonna give you the opportunity to show the world how smart you are i'm gonna give you a
third round pick and because you're so smart you're gonna pick the next hall of fame player
with it right so it's cumulatively sad for buffalo but in the moment i understand why
they made this move okay question
you've got a year to show connor mcdavid right i know he's got two years but let's be honest
just like the lease with matthews you've got a year to go we're going for it we're winning
you brought in the coach you wanted right connor uh mike babcock yeah so there's i guess there's
two names i want to ask about you are going to camp with tristan jari and devin levi and maybe
connor ingram too ingram's gone ingram is gone oh did he sign elsewhere yeah he okay oh did he i
didn't even see that today that everything has happened yeah so i so this is your is this the
plan surely there's got to be more to it like i because i think the reason this had to happen
today for edmonton is that stan bowman hasn't done anything and the oilers need to show they
did something they need to show they did something darnell nurse has held them up you look at what's
happening here they needed to move him he gave him three teams philadelphia was interested but
when warinski became available when john carlson might have become available john carlson i don't
think it's signed yet you know they're like well oh yeah darnell we'll get to you but like we're
not in any rush and also that you can be traded to three teams and we're the only one who's
interested i think the oilers are kind of screwed by the fact that they did not get that business
done earlier in the offseason and maybe they could have done more had they just agreed to retain
can i give you an unhinged one give me an unhinged one halibut to edmonton why the hell not well i
mean if he's willing to wave which apparently he is so this is this is the thing you why are you
leaving winnipeg uh because you want to win yeah there's lots there's lots of answers to that but
i think for connor hellebuck who just won a gold medal and was fantastic in that game
you want to win what we've discussed recently is i can't believe that over the last half decade or
so no goalie top 15 goalie in the league has just decided to win a cup decide if connor hellebuck
waves to edmonton he's deciding to win a cup yes you're winning no question you're winning
When Bobrovsky went to Florida, he was the first one in the door for the cup run.
Florida stunk.
They were terrible.
People forget about what they were when he signed there.
And when he signed there, he was like, I can't wait to win cups in Florida.
Everybody was like, LOL.
LOL.
And then he wasn't all that great at first.
No, he wasn't.
It took a minute and he got injured like everyone said he would.
And then he turned into something.
But so you think Conor is special.
So Conor Ingram, by the way, it doesn't look like he signed with anyone.
Oh, yeah.
So what Mark Spector says, and Conor Ingram has apparently gone from Edmonton, he says,
Conor Ingram goes to market.
Negotiations with Oilers were not fruitful, would have liked to have remained an Oiler.
This tells us Oilers have settled elsewhere on a net mine.
And it's Devin Levi.
And shortly, oh boy.
Now, I will say this for the Oilers.
As of 20 minutes ago, I'm incorrect, Darnold Nurse has agreed to expand his teams, of which
he will accept a trade to.
But guys, we're running out of dance partners here, right?
That's also what happens.
Now, listen, nobody's going to be capped out this year or very few teams are going to be capped out this year because the cap is rising so fast.
But I think is it like, let me ask you this PR wise.
Do you want to be Stan Bowman in front of the last time you talked to the Oilers media?
It was introduced Mike Babcock.
And we went through how intense that press conference was just Ryan Rashad with a double barrel off the top.
And then Mark Spector immediately with another double barrel.
Is that what you want to do when you talk to the Oilers media later today?
because you are talking oh man like is this is this your move san jose by the way is apparently
interested in darnell nurse there could be some mutual interest there i'm just saying
you almost need a secondary gm to handle your goalie situation like i'm not i'm not i'm not
even kidding like the amount of scouts you speak to yep or coaches who like hockey's been their
entire life yes and you're like what do you think of this goalie and they're like don't ask me about
goalies the amount of time like dude i've been doing this for 19 years like you know how many
people i've met the amount of just regular hockey people who can talk to you about wingers and
centers and d they have no idea what makes goalies tick what makes them good what makes them have an
off day they don't understand any of it you talk to a goalie expert it's kind of the opposite right
don't ask me how mcdavid is good just give me the goalie guy i'm gonna talk to you about the goalies
you almost like because very clearly the jari move is in context it's one of the worst moves
it was at the time a bad move we were all like this is desperate was he uh no it was it was
but if jari kept up his unrealistically hot start in pittsburgh it's it's a it's a career defining
move for a guy who's already got three cups instead it is one of the worst moves the franchise has
ever made so in contact so we'll see what happens but if this is the only move the oilers make it's
gonna be a real interesting day uh at edmonton pete press conferences by jari levi like is that
is that good enough you know what david in 2020 in 2020 people have been like you know
i don't mind that i'd sooner start levi than jari like what cj was in here he was sitting in this
chair and I go where does Jari play next season and he goes or I said where does he begin next
season he goes Edmonton I was not talking about him getting traded I was talking about Bakersfield
yeah it's gonna be interesting I I think it's Levi and you need to now go out and get a third
goalie or no a second goalie there you go Jari is not an option for you all right so we'll see
what the Oilers do I mean it could still happen uh and it's interesting that you mentioned that
because Eric Comrie just signed in San Jose.
Perhaps a goalie coming back for Darnell Nurse.
I don't know.
We'll see.
SDPN's trade coverage, well, trade coverage,
free agency coverage continues.
We're going to have our live stream around 4.30, 4.45 this afternoon.
That'll count as our podcast.
We'll go through winners and losers, all that sort of stuff.
But in the meantime, keep it locked here
because we've got so many more things to talk about.
Sergey Bobrovsky, Teddy Bluger.
Who else?
Colton Sissons.
Colton Sissons.
Jack Roslevic.
And Jack Roslevic and Brandon Duhaime.
Holy moly, that's a lot of money.
All right, let's start with this.
Teddy Bluger, $2.5 million, two-year contract.
Colton Sisson, $4.25 million, two-year contract.
Sergei Bobrovsky, $7 million, three,
$7 million AAV, three-year.
And then Roslevic, $4 million, two-year.
And then the last one, Matty, there we go.
Oh, that's Troy Stetcher.
No, we don't want Troy Stetcher.
As happy as we are that Troy Stetcher's back.
He's probably not even loaded yet.
Brandon Duhame, by the way, who's not loaded yet.
Brandon Duhame, three-year contract.
Oh.
$1.85 million.
Okay.
So let's just take it as the order has it there.
Let's start with Sergey Bobrovsky,
who's obviously the biggest signing of the day for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
This had been rumored, and it turns out that that picture of it on the Jumbotron,
I think Frank Cervalli tweeted that out.
That was real.
Hey, guys.
Little inside info.
People prepare things.
That's correct.
corporations have employees who prepare things yeah yeah it wasn't this isn't some huge deal
no if you were going to pitch someone on signing in toronto you're gonna put a giant frig off thing
of them on the jumbotron yep because bob has never been here apparently your social team has to
prepare graphics for when the tweet goes out and then you're gonna send it to him yeah and also
let's pretend there was tampering i don't give a damn your team's been tampering as long as mine
So here's what I want to ask you.
I want to ask you about this.
OK, you know, I am.
I tweeted out that I was really excited about this Bobrovsky deal.
Now, I want you to imagine for a second that I was exhausted.
That that I was described as a pill.
I would never that I that I am frustrating generally to deal with.
OK, all right.
Why do we like this deal?
Because there's a lot of reasons based on recency bias, especially last season,
that we shouldn't like this deal.
uh wasn't it like an 870 save percentage or something last year 877 oh that's awful oh
that's not good why do we want to pay seven million dollars for a 38 year old to give us
an 870 steve dangle and jesse blake played a completely insane amount of games on a team
that was going nowhere just rapid speeds yeah oh why would we want to do it sorry i thought
you were continuing you were supposed to provide the defense yeah why sergey damn bobrovsky like
everyone's going on so this past season is the only thing that exists and it's the only thing
that matters the three straight stanley cup finals and two straight stanley cups before it do not
matter they never happen you're saying people are acting like that they're a figment of your
imagination now now listen listen i'm not here to tell you you're stupid for disliking the deal
there's absolutely risk involved here he's 37 and a lot of people are going to say he's 37 and i got
terrible news when the season begins he's going to be 38 the leafs have gotten burned on three-year
deals for old guys ryan reeves didn't finish the deal patrick marlo didn't finish the deal and it
cost them seth jarvis it didn't have to they just made a bad well they did yep they did right um
this is a really old guy here's the theory if you well first of all if you make the playoffs he's bob
yep i've been saying for months now if you have two starters you have none yes right yep should
it be stoller should be wall you have none you don't if you can't think of who your starter is
you do not have a starter you have a guy who can fill in you got a guy who can pretend to be a
starter for a little while Sergey Bobrovsky's a starter Anthony Stolarz is now a backup we're
stopping that silly game where we break this man yep okay now here's the other problem Artur
Aktymov doesn't need waivers he'll go down to the Marlies he just won AHL playoff MVP
Dennis Hildeby needs waivers yes he does so he's a trade ship he's getting traded well not not
or what or well exactly because wool went for nothing Levi went for nothing
just have three goalies right you have uh is is Sergey Bobrovsky gonna be the oldest starting
goalie in the league uh yeah I think so yep and then you got Stollers who is just so breakable
yes I have and Hildeby some of you're gonna be like you're putting too much time into Dennis
Hildeby out of goalies who played 20 or more games had the third highest save percentage in
the NHL last year on a team that's I would not lose this player for nothing I'll go further I
would not lose this player Jesse what do you think here I agree with Steve but kind of for like the
opposite reasons of what you're saying because I think you you made the defense for like they don't
need the starter like I don't think Bobrovsky is the starter because they have the three guys
I think that makes it so easy on Bobrovsky not to be the number one be a 30 gamer yeah and then but
when we get to the playoffs we know who we're leaning on yes this this is the goal now you got
to make the playoffs is going to be the criticism and honestly I don't have a defense of it it's
valid at the end of the day this plan doesn't work and this plan is a failure if they don't
make the playoffs if they do this is what it's set up to be yeah and what you're outlining is
kind of what carolina did last year carolina's kind of always had a three goalie thing that
they're kind of comfy with and i think things worked out for carolina last year when they got
to the playoffs they're like okay let's ride freddie until we don't have to anymore and i
think toronto's set up for the modern goaltender system where it's not just one guy it's a
collection of individuals and i think they should go with three guys because you can't trust strollers
hildeby's young and then you have boroski who's old but you can probably trust him a lot you
you all you can do it because luck the sport should just be called luck it like you can set
up as many contingencies as you want um you have four goalies who i'd be comfortable playing uh
right now not just three yeah um like carolina's situation like it's funny you bring them up
listen they won the stanley cup no one ever likes to talk about the stanley cup champions having an
element of luck they all do they had an element first they started the playoffs with freddie
anderson which was an at the time insane decision he's spectacular they get to the cup final he's
brutal they throw in bussy they threw in brandon who was a waiver claim who was a waiver claim who
hadn't played an nhl game before this season yeah and then they win the cup and he's incredible
right there's an element of luck here and all you can do is prepare yourself with an abundance of
good goalies and a lot of people look at it and they say he's 37 and there's four years i don't
care about the back two years oh three years yeah not even four i don't care about the last year i
care about the first two where austin matthews is still under contract those are the important
years you have to go for it and the last time the toronto maple leaf signed a 37 year old
goaltender he finished third in heart trophy or vesna voting that year that's ed belfort belfort
So Belfort was nominated for the Vesna third.
I knew he was.
Wow.
Yeah, that worked out for them.
I knew he was good.
I don't know if Bobrovsky is going to finish third in Vesna voting in his age 37 season
signing as a free agent for the Leafs.
But I have good memories of Belfort.
Wouldn't it be great if even if he doesn't have to write?
That's OK.
That's the big thing.
I don't need him to win a Vesna.
I need him to win rounds of playoffs.
And he is a dog in the playoffs.
There's no question.
Steve, just give me Bobrovsky's playoff numbers the last two seasons they were in the playoffs.
And then we're going to move on to some of the other guys on this list.
He was 16-5-2, which is to say 16-7, with a 9-14.
And he was 16-8 with a 9-06.
That's pretty good in the playoffs, I think.
Now, Jesse, bring up the big list of free agents that we just had.
Because I think we got to talk a little bit.
You know what, Steve?
We'll move to Colton Sissons.
Yes.
Two years, $4.25 million.
He had a really great run with the Vegas Golden Knights
in the playoffs on that Nick Dowd line.
They were really spectacular.
I thought he was a demon.
And people are saying this is high.
He's a forward, not a demon.
Yeah.
Shut up.
You sure you're not a dad?
Anyway.
I'm a dog dad.
That's what I am.
Let me know.
What do we think?
Is it too much money?
Oh, it's a lot.
This is the problem.
This is in our new cap world.
like remember when conf got 2.5 million dollars and we were like what the hell are you doing yeah
this isn't all that dissimilar but it's two years uh he's right-handed which comes at a premium he's
got 750 plus games of nhl experience he's got two stanley cup finals under his belt um he's a
tenacious player he can skate uh is it a little too much yeah the leafs the leafs can afford a
little too much i'm i'm really not bothered by it okay i'm not it's a lot for your fourth line
center it is i think there's a potential that he plays a little more than that okay well okay
maybe third line center sometimes third line right wing but you're not expecting him to score
well you're expecting him to take defensive zone face offs away from austin matthews take defensive
zone face offs away from austin matthews and one thing that was a strength for the leafs last year
and they had very few of them was their penalty kill and they've lost a lot of the guys who made
their penalty kill special yep um up front and on d um so they need to rebuild that and he was a big
huge part of vegas's penalty kill this past season i want to ask about did we do ross levick in its
own video or i can't remember okay okay so i don't know so let's move on to i don't know how many
videos we've made let's move on let's move on to a guy who i really loved in the vancouver playoff
run a couple years ago uh and i think his is is underrated and frankly uh justin fisher put it to
was uh he's like he's like do you think you overpaid for colton scissors i was a guess and
he's like do you think you underpaid for teddy bluger i said potentially he's like what if i
told you you could get both for six and a half million dollars and i said i'd be okay with that
and that's what we got here so it all comes down the walk yeah teddy bluger two years 2.5 million
aav that's 2.4 percent of the cap because we're going up baby joders blugers now this guy is mr
motor he is a penalty killer what kind of a role do you see him playing and don't you guys think
it's interesting that they just keep signing centerman i think it's funny they keep signing
centerman and i think we all need to acknowledge that john chica has increased the leafs latvian
by three thousand percent that's true they just drafted patrick's plumage yeah um they invited
another latvian goalie to camp which means i think they have probably a quarter of the latvian goalies
in the world um and now they have uh teddy bluger um who stanley cup winner yep found his way into
who do you win the cup with vegas oh he found his way into lfr lore uh when i was like who the hell
is this random guy who pittsburgh signed out of like boston college or something like that's an
all-american name yeah and it's not even his real name yeah yeah she orders losers but he
dropped the S and Nick called himself Teddy
I want to I want to know
okay so if Sissons is going to be
I think he's going to be the
third line centerman right
Teddy Bluger fourth line center
is that how we see this laying out
Jesse Steve I don't have a
read because like there's grew in
there as well Lorenz can
play either wing so like
is your is your fourth line
like Bluger
on the left maybe
sissons in the middle and lorenz on the right this might help so puck peter currently has it listed
mckenna matthews nize cowan tavarez nylander joshua sissons roslovich lorenz bluger quillen
i think that third line is more offensive capability than it appears well josh joshua
if he's healthy and that's the big if uh he's pretty valuable right like that's a guy that
you're like i don't think it's that big an if like the the two reasons he missed time
where well he had testicular cancer and then he freaking lacerated his spleen like that's
that's horrible freaking luck and there's that word again um sissons i don't know if he's an
ideal third line center he can do it he might just be what's available and again if you can
get tavaris and matthews all the ozone starts then you don't care right if you that's how you
got to tilt it for now i mean if that's how you do it like it forget lines one through four maybe
it's offense one offense two defense one defense two yep now let's move on to jesse let's bring up
the big old board of free agent signings uh one more time here you want to do hame i want to do
hame now he is a three-year elliot uh actually put it at 1.85 million it's actually 2.6 million
dollars per year for brandon do hame over the next three years so a little bit more expensive
he is oh my goodness first season that's a lot of money and he is he's playing a non-premium
position but here's the thing about brandon duhaime that people like uh he's a big mean guy
who's fast oh was duhaime he wasn't even on our yeah he'd be in place of quillen on what we just
yes he wasn't on that for a group right so you're you're looking at bluger but if you include
quillen lorenz and duane somebody's got to get scratched somebody's got to get scratched but
also i think there's a lot of speed there right like bluger's got a motor sissons can skate
duhaime can really skate maybe lorenz is the healthy potentially you know maybe like he's
definitely he's part of the reason that bob signed here right is so what's the connection supposedly
the way it worked is uh bob loved being goalie partners with stolars why wouldn't he they won
back-to-back cups together um but like it's a skill to be a backup to a starter and obviously
he put bob in his happy place and i wonder if this past season like i am shocked that sergey
bobrovsky's coming here this is not where i thought his career was going to take him
to me that says he loves stolars and also he likes lorenz lorenz what lorenz was his i was
getting to it oh sorry lorenz was his supposedly practice shooter okay so whenever he needed
someone to work out with it's lorenz taking shots right okay yeah so and i assume most of those shots
weren't on the breakaway because oh my god he led the league in breakaways and couldn't score it was
so frustrating yeah um uh that's why bob came here uh i don't know if that means lorenz is gonna make
the lineup but no but like i don't think he's gonna like i got a text like oh i bet he's getting
traded no he's not no right he's he's part of the reason that bob is here going back to brandon
duane he was second on the washington capitals in hits this past season uh behind tom wilson he had
159 uh in 82 games over the past or sorry two seasons ago he was also second to tom wilson
so wow probably leads a lot of teams if it weren't for tom freaking wilson uh he led the capitals
forwards in blocks from this past season uh with 57 so and again this is a guy who he was sixth
among caps forwards in shorthanded ice time which is not a huge penalty killer but we're seeing how
they're rebuilding the penalty kill yeah sissons is going to be part of that bluger is going to be
part of that duane is absolutely going to be part of that a guy i had my eye on as a free agent who
ended up making more than duane and i would have been happy to pay the price was beck malenstein
i i wanted him to shake loose from buffalo big time they couldn't get him so now now you get
brandon duane who it's too much money for the production um is it though his career high is
21 points it's a three-year deal in a couple of years like it's it's 2.5 of the cap today he had
all he played all 82 games last year he had nine points yeah but what about what about you know
next year and the year after too you're looking at you're looking at i mean a guy that's going
to be worth about two percent of the cap on your fourth line i think that makes sense i'm not
i'm not worried about it he skates well for a big guy hits blocks you need those guys for your
percent of the caps the the last year he made 2.1 percent and that was when he made 1.85 million
so then this year at 2.6 million it's 2.5 percent so it's a 0.4 jump in percent of the cap but it's
going to go back down to where you
wanted Adam as the years go on
that's going to get closer to what
1.8 was last season
you will always overpay for free agents
yeah like that's just the way but it's going to
regress back to where it should be in terms
of percentage of the cap the cap is going up
in such a way that like I don't think any of the
deals signed today are going to make or break you
maybe Bob
but yeah like
maybe day or day well
sorry I meant for Toronto
there's some breakable deals out there
there's some deals that teams sign that I think
are pretty bad okay I want to say I want to ask this
guys so we're looking at we're looking at this
team and you gotta I gotta say
this so we got a we got a fourth line
a checking line easy to put together now
something that man have
they struggled with putting a checking line together
problem is contenders have
three lines that can produce often yeah
do the Leafs have that yet
you got Rossovic down there
potentially he might be in your top six
Roslevic like maybe maybe Cowan
is pushed down Joshua's not a huge
score he can he can
Sissons isn't a huge score he can
Roslevic
I'm still
looking at a lineup that doesn't make a ton of sense
and to me Cowan switch Cowan
and Nize that because I think
Nize will be playing at the left side and then Cowan
will be playing the right because Cowan prefers the right
so you know to
me they still have work to do here
and you know I
also think the cap space that's available tells me that they you know with the signings they've
made i think they've got to be thinking that morgan riley's out the door because i think that
they're going to want a little bit more cap space than what they have currently right yeah what what
do they add oh my god now remember there's 580 000 no domey on ltir right now yes right we don't
know where that's going to stand and we've got morgan riley still in the roster it's i'm sure
there's others i think a good roster is it is it enough and and that's going to be a real question
Don't forget, Andre and Quillen need contracts.
Yeah, and last thing I want to do before we kind of wrap this video
is what does this tell us about the way the Leafs want to play?
What do these signings say?
Because to me...
They're going to be faster than they were last year.
They sure are.
That's instantly what I thought.
I think they're going back a little bit to an east-west, too.
Faster, more tenacious.
You think they're going to be a little more east-west?
A little more through the neutral zone.
Like, they're not just going to come straight at you.
They might try to finesse a little more.
It was more northeast-southwest, northeast-southwest
because they kept getting cycled into oblivion in their own zone.
Yes.
Yeah.
So Jesse, what do you think less of that?
I'm still a question mark on how Jim Hiller is going to change his style of hockey
because L.A. was so defensive based.
I don't know if if Toronto is going to do that again.
You know, I feel like maybe he'll he'll change his style from what he's learned in L.A.
So I'm still waiting for training camp to see that.
I don't got really guesses on that.
OK, well, we're not done yet.
It's free agency.
it's sdpn and our live stream starts pretty soon here it's going to be 430 to 445 no way the leafs
are done like no they have a lot to do there to make some cast space to sign andre and quillen
and morgan's probably the answer they're done today at max yeah at max exactly yeah this this
is an unfinished product so uh we will see you for that live stream it's coming up soon 430 445
yeah sdp and youtube ladies and gentlemen the leafs have made a trade after we did our leafs
video steve and jesse do not know what the trade is no i didn't want to keep it a secret
who's the team uh tampa remember the people watching already know so let's not spend much
time okay all right 2028 third round pick going to tampa 2027 fourth round pick going to tampa
dennis hildeby going to tampa wow for who delete the last video
shit don't do that um i have
moser i have no idea i don't i don't know definitely not i have no i don't i don't know
okay so let's think about uh jesse give me give me a guess give me a guess just no idea okay um
can you just give us the thorn in the leaf side every time he plays nick paul nick paul nick paul
nick paul is a toronto maple leaf oh well there's your 3c slash 2c you think so that's fine he had
41 points in the 24 25 season they have him listed as a left wing um but i guess he can take centers
to our face offs too i've had they also have a lot of center we've had zero time to research this but
yes he's regularly over 50 so do we like the nick paul move i mean i don't even know what the guy
makes yeah i will say so in the um in the montreal tampa series nick paul didn't play in every game
if i remember correct they were a totally different team without him okay tell me why
better worse uh oh my god there were if you imagine oh man so much they were so much better
without him holy cow what were they playing him for no the opposite uh tampa was a much better
team they had so much more of the pucks they were so much faster they were just on you on you on you
this match is exactly what the leafs want to be i'm frankly surprised tampa would trade them in
division well it looks like tampa needed some cap room nick paul by the way uh a couple of years ago
do the leafs have that two years in a row no they have they're in the negative right now but i think
that means max domey's probably not playing next season and they're probably moving uh morgan
riley at some point 24 goals in 23 24 uh in 24 25 he had 22 goals a bit of a step back last year
seven and eight i think he was hurt uh but 46 and 41 points you hope he gets back to that jesse what
do you like about nick paul do you like this deal the leafs actually got somebody for a goaltender
that's surprising what do we think i'm surprised that they moved off of hill to be so quickly
i i thought the three goalie thing was gonna be a thing but it still might be it could be
sure i don't think so anymore they sign a guy if they were gonna go with that they would have gone
with hildeby i think you had them on the roster i think you're right do that so i think they are
committed to stallers and bob which is a stanley cup winning duo so i don't hate their goaltending
situation at all and that was a place of strength for the leafs and that's what we kind of asked
for them going into this offseason to do is like you have wall installers and actim of
aktiyamov and hildeby and all of this goalie gluttony why not move that i like to goalie
make your four group better because that's the place where you really struggled and that's what
is doing so in retrospect i can't hate it even though like hildeby was many stallers in terms
of his build he was like two just massive goaltenders and talking to him in the locker
room he'd always say about how he watches stallers so closely to build a game off of that because
they're so similar in body type that he can learn so much and he's getting so much better by being
up with the Leafs and watching Stallers so you're not going to get that growth from him anymore
which I think was just going to keep going he's going to be a really good but he's not a kid he's
like 26 isn't he yeah but goaltenders peak at different yeah you're right uh 25 now Nick Paul
he so sorry for for Tampa fans Dennis Hildeby once again this is the stat I like to trot out
but I haven't seen anyone say it uh out of goalies who play 20 or more games Hildeby played exactly
20 dennis hildeby finished third in the entire nhl in safe percentage oh i believe was he ahead
of vasilevsky i'm not sure he's it was wedgewood and it might have been vasilevsky ahead of him
he's he's great like last season he really came into his own and while he was up with the big team
archer aktimov was playing more and more games with the marlies to the point where he then became
the starter heading into the calder cup playoffs anyone playoff mvp and behind him is the guy who
had nhl experience and that's that's found value right like that's uh now all of a sudden you can
that's move off of a goal but that's an upgrade on jonas johansson yo oh my god like this is good
for yes on the tampa side of things yeah you're getting a really good goaltender who's going to
be fantastic behind vasilevsky but i like the move for the leafs to get nick paul back because
i think nick paul is a fantastic 3.1 million worth mentioning jonas johansson is under contract for
this upcoming season but i'm guessing he's he's about to be population waiver city 3.15 million
dollars three more years for nick paul let's talk about nick paul the thorn in the side that he is
he's first off he's six foot four he's 234 pounds oh yeah he's a very big boy um i know you said he
was listed as left wing he was fourth on the tampa bay lightning in face-offs last season despite the
fact he only played 51 games he had 557 so that's your third line with that i think he was 53 percent
in the draw 53.9 so really 54 53.9 percent in the draw which is fantastic like the when you just get
to the little numbers above 50 like you're in the good ballpark for a center i think this is i think
it's good for the leafs in terms of you need to bolster your four group that's what check has
been doing all day long just getting these forwards who are an upgrade on the guys that they
have so why not trade from a position of strength uh to address a weakness he did play on the he
did play shorthanded a bit and he did play on the
power play a bit so not not the
biggest penalty killer no no but
there's well they got some of those yeah
they got some of those today so you were asking
I think it was you Jesse you
were I don't remember better get this right talking about
not screw this up oh you were
talking about Jack Roslick oh I was okay
now what did I say okay you were saying you want
a player who's a little bit more versatile yes
I
listen to my friends yes
time for everything yeah Nick Paul is it's true
Nick Paul is that
a little more versatile and you know we were looking at the leaf center situation only a
few minutes ago and i'm like i like sissons a lot but at 3c i'm not totally sure um nick paul is
very obviously your 3c yeah yeah yeah yeah and i think that pushes sissons and roslovich into
other places so roslovich does that mean you have i think he's a wing oh yeah you think he's a wing
with matthews that's yes i do okay and then start and then so okay let's i think that is so much fun
in training camp oh that's great okay can we look at uh can we look at the third one we'll give me
one second puck media is slow obviously because of all the news what is their problem um no i want
to talk about that that third line for a second for the toronto maple leaves nick paul at the
center of it you've got sizzins available who i think will probably now be the fourth line guy
okay yes you also have speed from quillen if he's going to be a guy that you that you keep around
my guess is he doesn't make the team okay he does he's an extra beau grew was really good for the
toronto maple leafs i don't know where he fits i don't know where the hell he goes um you've also
got duhaime who i think you put you have as a fourth liner i've been trying to advocate the
leafs push dakota joshua down to the fourth line and use him there could you have a teddy bluger
nick paul colton sissons thing going on like although that offense is kind of where it goes
to die like i could you trade dakota joshua well that's a good question i liked him i liked him
when he was healthy i did oh me too now i'm starting to look at the cap situation and now
i'm starting to wonder if it makes sense um i like i probably shouldn't get all tied up in
beau grew but like he was so good he was so good in his audition with the leafs he was so good
with the Marlies en route to a Calder Cup,
he's under contract for dirt cheap.
Yep.
Does it make more sense to get
whatever you humanly possibly can
for Dakota Joshua
and free up that three-ish million dollars
and you get Bo Groove for like league men
or whatever?
If Roslevic is playing top line right wing
with Matthews,
you could have nice Matthews, Roslevic
or McKenna, whatever.
McKenna, Tavares, Nylander.
At least that's where McKenna is going to start.
Something like that.
you could have joshua nick paul easton cowan that's annoying and then duhaime bluger colton
sissons also annoying incredibly annoying and a lot and lorenz is your extra yeah i think so
and then you've got quillen and grew that you can work with so i i don't know it's a very
interesting trade for them well you know heading into today i was like they have no forward depth
and then they acquired five yeah makes it easier to move matthew nice shut your
dirty mouth it's entirely possible now well good question do they even have the cap space for
zach warrensky they are capped out right now they are yes but they're actually i think technically
over the cap by a hundred grand they are i also think they're going to move morgan riley so i
don't think you know and you could also move dakota josh as you said what nick paul where's
number 20 are you gonna have to is he gonna have to buy you a rolex for it yeah he is okay all
right here camera on me yeah he is all right that's for all the shit from the senators and
lightning yeah hey come here i remember 2022 you piece of listen it's all water under the bridge
now you look great in blue and white you better keep looking great in blue and white i'm not happy
with you make me happy all right let's do this uh we're gonna wrap it up i have a number we've got
a stream to get to because it would look stupid with just a nameplate the stream starts in uh
well very soon uh 4 30 or 4 45 depending upon when we get to it so this is our last quick video
for the day and then a whole big stream awaits so stpn uh in like 20 minutes
