during checkout to save 10 percent trades and assigning steve dangle here on sdpn let's talk about a big deal i i think it's a big deal it is literally a big deal in that it involves one of the biggest players in the national hockey league anthony mantha is now a vegas golden knight that's deal that happened last night and I'm glad I waited to shoot this because this morning it was announced that Rasmus Sandin has signed a half decade extension with the Washington Capitals. Vladimir Tarasenko has also been traded to the Florida Panthers, that will be in the next video that I'm gonna shoot after this. The full deal is as follows. The Vegas Golden Knights acquire Anthony Mantha, 6 foot 5 over 230 pounds. For their trouble

the Washington Capitals acquire a second round pick from the Vegas Golden Knights in 2024 and a fourth round pick from the Vegas Golden Knights in 2026. And with Mantha being a pending UFA the Washington Capitals ate half of his remaining salary in order to do that. It's funny I've already talked to some people about this deal and they've sarcastically said oh blockbuster. What are you gonna learn man? What are you gonna learn? I think we've started thinking about trade deadline deals all wrong. I think we've started to think about them from the perspective of the selling team. Which is fine, if you cheer for the selling team, yeah! But I think sometimes we think about a blockbuster deal having a blockbuster return involving superstar players.

But what if a deal doesn't necessarily have a blockbuster return, doesn't necessarily have a superstar player, but gives the reigning Stanley Cup champions a super solid chance at repeating? The Vegas Golden Knights acquired a winger last year to help them win the Stanley Cup. Who was it? Exactly, Ivan Barbashev of course you remember and then he signed this big extension to stay in Vegas and he's gonna be there forever. What'd they give up? Class? Can anyone? What did the Vegas Golden Knights trade for Ivan Barbashev? Was it oh maybe it was a conditional pick because he signed an extension? NO! It was a guy! Picks are not guys, they are future guys, they're not guys yet. Zach Dean is who the Vegas Golden Knights traded. Zach Dean, the 30th overall

pick from 2021. Lo and behold, Barbashev was completely perfect for the Vegas Golden Knights lineup, was a huge part of them winning the 2023 Stanley Cup, the first Stanley Cup in franchise history and now they go out and they get Anthony Mantha. I think we also need to adjust our expectations for Anthony Mantha a little bit because he's almost got a bit of an air of being a bust around him. Like I mean he's almost 30 years old now, he's certainly not a prospect anymore and once upon a time, first round pick, skilled forward, 6 foot 5. He had all the makings of being a potential super duper star. And now here he is, well into his career. He's eclipsed 20 goals a few times. The Detroit Red Wings cut bait on him and traded him after the covid

shutdown. The covid shortened season. The second one. But he has 34 points in 56 games so far this season which is decent, maybe not mind-blowing, but 20 of those 34 points are goals. And those 20 goals are already the third highest total of his career and there's a really solid chance he hits a career high because his second is 24 and his best season is 25. And did I mention he's 6 foot 5 230 pounds! Actually the websites I've found listed him over 230 pounds but 234 according to HockeyDB sounded weirdly specific. Just because he's not the 50 plus goal scorer that he was in junior in the QMJHL does not mean Anthony Mantha cannot be an enormously helpful contributor for the Vegas Golden Knights. And if you're wondering, hey does he use that 6'5 230 plus pound frame?

Yes! He beat the brakes off of Nick Cousins recently. That was cool. Oh the brakes and wheels off of me did! Last year, famously, the Vegas Golden Knights won the Stanley Cup with an entire roster. Every single player over 6 feet tall, except for the eventual Conn Smythe winner, Jonathan Marcheseau. Hilarious. Anthony Mantha IS a Vegas Golden Knight. I think this is a magical deal for them. Right now, according to Daily Faceoff, he's listed on the Vegas Golden Knights third line with Nicolas Waugh in the middle and Paul Cotter on the left wing and I have tweeted that Paul Cotter plays like ROAD RAGE. I mean, look at them in the regular season, they're obviously a good team. They've hit a bit of a

slump recently obviously with the injury bug and everything but they're a good regular season team that BUILDS for the playoffs. I think this is a great move for them. Maybe one thing to flag though, in 11 career playoff games, Mantha has 6 points, all of them assists, no goals yet. The first goal he scores in these playoffs, if he scores in these playoffs, will be his first. From the Vegas Golden Knights end of it, dude. Look at their draft pick situation according to capfriendly.com. They still have their first round pick in each of the next three seasons. They don't have a second round pick this season now but they do in 2025 and 2026. They have all their thirds for the next three years. They have one fourth remaining. These guys have a ton of

of picks at their disposal. Yeah their cap situation is a little bit of a mess but the Vegas Golden Knights have really set themselves up for continued success. And yet there is even more incentive to go all in this year despite winning the Stanley Cup last year. This is the Vegas Golden Knights cap friendly page and it's gonna be a difficult offseason for them. Jonathan Marcheseau making 5 million bucks, that's it. He won the Conn Smythe, is a pending UFA. Mantha is a pending UFA. Chandler Stevenson is up for a raise, he only makes 2.75 million. And then Michael Amadio has been really sneaky underrated for them. He needs one. Byron Frey's up front as well. And Alec Martinez on the back end. Oof. That's

not to mention William Carrier who's on injured reserve right now. The Vegas Golden Knights are gonna have to make some decisions this offseason. I don't think this is it for Vegas. I don't think after this season they just stop contending. They're just a really well run organization. But it sure feels like they're gonna get a whole new look and you might as well just empty the cupboard this season to do it. The Washington Capitals on the other hand, they look like a rebuilding team and a team that's doing it well. Again, here's their draft pick situation according to CapFriendly. They have all their first round picks for the next 3 years and good, they should. They're not

in a playoff spot right now. They don't have their own second rounder this year but they do have Vegas's. Next year they have THREE their own, the Bruins and the Avalanche and then obviously two years from now they have their own. Beyond the second round they have at least one pick in every round for the next three years except for the seventh round this year and next. That's really setting yourself up to recover quickly because ah do you really want to waste the end of Alex Ovechkin's career? Like yeah you gotta rebuild yeah you gotta bring in the next generation but you wanna TRY to make the playoffs. And here's one way that they're trying to do it. The Washington Capitals have re-signed

defenseman Rasmus Sandin to a 5 year contract extension. Sandin's contract will carry an average annual value of 4.6 MILLION per year. Now this year Rasmus Sandin's had a pretty frustrating job when you think about it. He was traded away from the Toronto Maple Leafs at last trade deadline and the Capitals ended up giving the Leafs a first round pick in that deal. Strange for a rebuilding team but this accelerated it. Also it was a pretty late first round pick and it wasn't even the Capitals own. The Leafs ended up drafting Easton Cowan with it who now has an OHL record point streak. Erasmus Sandin is just 23 years old he actually turns 24 tomorrow and he's basically in charge with being next in line

for running all things power play for the Washington Capitals. All things offense from the back end. For a team that has really struggled to score this season. And check this out, Sandin's been remarkably consistent. Rasmus Sandin's top offensive output came a few seasons ago with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In 52 games, 4 goals, 16 assists for 20 points. In those 52 games. In 52 games so far this season, 3 goals, 17 assists, 20 points. He's got a great vision of the ice, he has some defensive deficiencies but the dude for not a very big dude can CRUSH people with big hits. Even if you don't love Rasmus Sandin's now, there is every reason to expect he is going to grow into an increased role with

The Vladimir Tarasenko show is on its way to Florida! The Florida Panthers acquire Vladimir Tarasenko from the Ottawa Senators and it is a BANGER of a deal for the Panthers. Lot of Sens fans not loving this one BUT is it THAT bad of a deal for the Senators or are they just making the best of a situation that wasn't that great to begin with? Well first and foremost, the player. Tarasenko going to Florida. And I didn't even realize this, I knew Tarasenko was on a 1 year deal, I knew he was a pending unrestricted free agent. I didn't know about the trade protection! Like Pierre Dorian's last little while in Ottawa had some of the greatest hits. I mean the Alex Dobrynkat deal in and then out. For

a player who was never guaranteed to stay there, does this sound familiar at all? But I guess what makes it different with Vladimir Tarasenko is he's on the back nine and Dobrynkat they were HOPING could be a part of the Sens for the future. Tarasenko, he was a bit of a hired gun. He could show up in Ottawa, inject a bit of offense to a team that should have been scoring a whole hell of a lot. And then if he decides, hey this is a pretty good situation, he sticks around. And I guess the decision that you had to make peace with at the time when you were giving him trade protection is, if things don't work out. Whether he's good or not but the TEAM is not doing that well. If you have to sell, you CAN trade him

he gets to tell you where he's going. Because what Ottawa gets out of this is a 3rd round pick and a 4th round pick but the 4th rounder is conditional. Here's the full deal from Pierre Lebrun. Ottawa retains 50% on Tarasenko in the trade with Florida so add that to it too. Going to Ottawa from Florida, a 2024 4th round pick which becomes a 2026 3rd round pick if the Panthers win the cup and a 2025 3rd round pick. Basically if the Florida Panthers win the Stanley Stanley Cup, the Ottawa Senators third round pick uh, moves back two years but moves up 32 spots. Potentially more if there's expansion over the next couple years I guess. Look, it's something. It's definitely something for the Florida Panthers who at times have

been talked about like they're a one line team or at very least there's a few guys doing a lot of the offensive load. I really don't think the Panthers have many weaknesses, I think they're a strong Stanley Cup contender. If there was one perceived weakness, at least to me, a little bit of depth would be nice. Tarasenko? Perfect. Perfect. He adds to their offense, he adds some experience because he won a Stanley Cup in 2019 don't you know. And the dude is not washed! 17 goals and 24 assists for 41 points in 57 games so far with the Sens. That's pretty good. How does he adjust to the Florida Panthers? Well, I guess we'll see. In 69 games last season he only had 18 goals split between the Blues and the Rangers.

Only 8 of those goals coming in the 31 games that he played with the Rangers. But 21 points overall, 21 points in 31 games that's not bad. And he put up 3 goals and 1 assist for 4 points in 7 games in the Rangers first round loss to the Devils. I mean this is Bill Zito just doing a great job honestly. Not only does he identify like a good player, a solid player who you know can do it because he's done it. He does it for a very cheap price. This dude looked around the NHL, he looked at teams who were vulnerable, he looked at teams with unique situations and he said, well Vladimir Tarasenko wants to move closer to his family, I'm gonna get him for cheap. And that's not me assuming. Chris Johnston, one of the best in the biz of STPN fame,

of note with the Sens' modest return in the Vladimir Tarasenko deal to Florida, a third plus a conditional fourth. The player had a strong say in the process courtesy of his no trade clause. Really really tidy work from Florida. Now if you want a reason for some optimism, for some sort of silver lining for the Senators, well first of all you get two picks regardless. It's worse than a kick in the teeth, it's worse than nothing which was also an option I guess. But Jason York, former Ottawa Senator, still talks about the Sens all the time. I thought he had a really good uh insight here. Here's what he said on Twitter. People forget if Pinto didn't get suspended the Sens probably would have had to move Joseph for peanuts. The Tarasenko deal

was dumb to begin with and you threw in a no trade just to make sure you handcuffed yourself at the deadline. Big name chasing with no plan at its finest. Now I know what you're thinking, Steve that doesn't sound like silver lining at all. Well it is! Number one, the dude who put you in this position. The dude who signed Vladimir Tarasenko, gave him the trade protection and everything, handcuffing you at the deadline and building a team that hasn't been able to contend for a playoff spot this year, he's gone. That was Pierre Dorian, he's gone. So yes it was a mistake to give Tarasenko that deal, it was a mistake to give him the trade protection, that's spilled milk. The guy who signed that deal is no longer employed by the Ottawa Senators. At least he's

not the GM. Also the Shane Pinto situation, not good. The fact that the Sens are not in a playoff spot, not good. But if you think about how it worked out, okay they were able to keep Joseph and not trade him for Peanuts and that IS a piece who could build with you into the future. And at least you get something for Tarasenko and alright it's looking a little rosier isn't it? And it's not like the Sens want to tear this thing down to the the bones either. This year workout? No, not at all. They want to be right back to contending for a playoff spot, at very least being in the conversation next season. Not to mention there's still two days until the trade deadline, who knows what else Ottawa has in store. And who knows if the Florida Panthers will add

even more because they did not break the bank for this one. Two thirds but potentially just a third and a fourth? Half of Tarasenko's salary dude? They're a cup contender. They're absolutely a cup contender. But for now, that is it for this one. Alright! Well apparently today's just trade deadline day then. Wow! The Colorado Avalanche are going for it! Alright there's already rumours that your garden alumni and Colorado Avalanche Captain Gabriel Landeskog could be coming back. Who knows? Fingers crossed. I mean if they were to announce that like that might be the news of the trade deadline honestly. But the Avalanche just made seismic changes. Two big trades and honestly you could argue that either one of them are the biggest deal of the day so far. Man, saying so far is wild. Who knows maybe they end up with Gensel at the end of all this by the time this video is posted. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. What's going on? What's the first deal? The Colorado Avalanche have acquired defenseman

Sean Walker and a fifth round draft pick in 2026 from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for forward Ryan Johansen and a first round selection in 2025. That first round selection by the way is conditional because it is top 10 protected so if they get a pick in the top 10 next year lol I can't imagine that being possible then it would slide to 2026 and if that were to happen then the avalanche would really be in trouble. So here's the thing you gotta take trades as a whole. When When a deal is 1 for 1 and don't worry we'll get to Byram for Middles stat, yeah! That just is what it is. But it is unfair and incorrect to look at this deal and go, the Avalanche paid a first round pick for Sean Walker? No, they paid a first round pick for Sean Walker

AND to get rid of Ryan Johansson's contract. Now, if you wanna criticize Colorado Avalanche management for trading for Ryan Johansson in the first place, yeah okay I'll hear that because what happened June 24th 2023 the Avalanche traded Alex Galchenyuk who I forgot they had to the Nashville Predators, basically just his rights, in order to get Ryan Johansson half retained. At the time, Johansson? 8 million bucks just didn't make any sense for anybody. He wasn't an 8 million dollar player anymore. Ryan Johansson at 4 million bucks? That could work! And it's 4 million bucks this season AND next. Did he play really well? No! 13 goals, 23 points in 63 games is not the end of the world but for 4 million bucks and where he was playing in the

lineup and where he was supposed to play in the lineup at the beginning of the season? Yeah that's pretty bad. It was an inefficient use of the Colorado Avalanches cap space and they are not a team that has patience for inefficiency. They needed the center depth at the time, it just didn't work out and the Philadelphia Flyers have already placed Ryan Johansen on waivers. I'm very doubtful anyone claims him though. I think he's still an NHL player? Four million bucks though. Now what the Avalanche get? Sean Walker! It absolutely stacked right side of the ice. Makar, Manson, Walker. Gross. Now as you know during the 2022 season the Colorado Avalanche ended up winning the Stanley Cup because they were really really good.

a lot of that was because of Kayla McCarr but it's so underrated how big of an impact Josh Manson had on the avalanche and that cup run. But I did have some concerns watching that as an outsider because Manson was getting beat up and doing the beating up. He took on so much of the physical load for the avalanche. Is that going to change much with Sean Walker? Eh he's kind of average size, just a hair under 200 pounds, just a hair under six feet. But it just adds more depth to an already ridiculously stacked decor. And for their end of the bargain, what a ridiculously interesting season for the Philadelphia Flyers. Like this team just acquired a first round pick, there's still a really solid chance they make the Stanley Cup playoffs. Why do I say that?

They're in them! Right now! They have a top three spot in the Metro. They have 72 points in 63 games. They are tied with the Detroit Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning who can't pass them because they're in the Atlantic Division. The closest team to them passing them in the Metro is the Islanders who have two games in hand but they are four points behind the Flyers. Best case scenario for the Islanders is they win their games in hand just to tie the Flyers in points. Then there's the Capitals with 65 points. I don't think so. Really it's just the Islanders. I don't think the Penguins are getting there either, or the Devils. This is actually brilliant management from Dani Brierre. If you don't think you can keep this player, and if you can get a first round

pick in the process, and the competition below you is so weak. Dude. Do it! Are you taking talent off of your roster? Yes. Is Sean Walker having a great season for the Philadelphia Flyers? Also yes. But, John Tortorella man, that dude knows how to squeeze blood from a stone. Getting back to Colorado. Can I show you a funny tweet? From Arif Dean, Sean Walker would give the Avs three righties and three lefties. Something like Taves Makar, Gerard Manson, Byram Walker and then Jack Johnson and uh Jones. Here's the problem with this tweet, it's already out of date because the Avalanche made ANOTHER HUGE deal. This is huge. Because here comes Chris Johnston with MACHINATIONS. It's a one for one deal. Casey Middlestadt to Colorado for Bowen Byram. One for one?!

Dude a few years ago this trade would have been absolute lunacy on behalf of the Colorado Avalanche and a complete fleecing from the Buffalo Sabres because Byram was a fourth overall pick. Really really promising looking defenseman and Middlestadt was kind of a bust. Fast forward a few years and wow a lot changes. One thing you'll never ever be able to take away from Bowen Byram is he's the Stanley Cup champion and he won the Stanley Cup as a really young player and I loved his game during that cup run. But as these charts from Don Leshizen point out, his underlying numbers are not great right now. He is not having the best season. Meanwhile Casey Middlestadt on a struggling Buffalo Sabres team is just racking up the numbers. Middlestadt had 25 points in 77

games in the 18-19 season. The reason he was thought of as a bust is that was his highest point total until last year. In a healthy 82 game season he only had 15 goals which eh, but 44 assists for 59 points. Dude's a playmaker. And if you don't love the price that Colorado paid to get Sean Walker but also get rid of Ryan Johansen. I guess I kinda get it but MIDDLE STAT coming in is an ENORMOUS upgrade on Johansen. This season, in another healthy season, 62 games, 14 goals, he should blow by his career high of 15 that he set last year. 33 assists, 47 points, there's still a really good chance he beats his career high in points as well and assists. And in Colorado he'll get a chance to play his first ever playoff hockey in the NHL. Actually I'm just looking at

at his hockey DB. At least according to hockey DB uh maybe his first playoff hockey. Now there's a risk here for the Sabres. Byram's career is not heading in the greatest direction, at least in terms of production and underlying numbers and everything. Retirement rumours have followed Byram for the last season or two because this guy has had several devastating concussions in his young career already. There's no guarantees that this guy pans out to what he could have been, there's no guarantees that he pans out to even a dude who should been drafted in the first round, there's no guarantees that he continues playing for much longer. Of course he could play until he's 40 years old and it's a non-factor. But forget the

fact that he's a former 4th overall pick, this tweet from Kyle Cushman says it all for why the Sabres would be willing to take on that risk. DALEEN. POWER. BYRAM. Are you kidding? The left side of the Buffalo Sabres decor could be entirely top four picks. Dahlin was first, Power was first, Byram was fourth. That's absurd. I don't know if that's ever happened before outside of the Olympics. It might not have even happened at the Olympics! How do you get two first overall picks and a fourth on the same decor? Buffalo obviously feels like they have the horses to help replace Middlestadt into the future and Byram? If that's a risk, sign me up for that risk because that could be absolutely absurd going into the future. I mean the one criticism you

might have of that deal is there's only one puck and what are those guys gonna do? Play 20 minutes each? I mean I guess you could. I guess your biggest concern is finding them all suitable partners. As for what it means for the Colorado Avalanche as a whole, I am reserving judgment because I don't think they're done. I don't think they're done at all. They got itchy feet, they're up to something. They might go and get Gensel. Or something else because I didn't see either of these moves happening. Maybe Walker, not Byrom from Middlestadt. But dude forget having Conor McDavid, you went to the Final Four two years ago, lost to the eventual Stanley Cup champs, and then you gave Vegas their best challenge in last year's playoffs and they became the Stanley Cup champs. If you're the Oilers, you look at you on paper, you look at the results over the last couple years,

you HAVE to believe in yourself. You have to make moves like this. And Tampa! What are you doing in there? The Edmonton Oilers acquire Adam Henrique, 75% retained, Sam Carrick and a 7th round pick. The Anaheim Ducks acquire the Edmonton Oilers 2024 1st round pick and a conditional 2025 5th round pick, the Tampa Bay Lightning get the Edmonton Oilers 4th round pick for being the 3rd team in this deal and retaining some of Henrik's salary. The condition on the 5th round pick that the Ducks get, it becomes a 4th if Edmonton wins the cup. Tampa must also send a reserve list player. So there are still some MACHINATIONS that need to be figured out with this deal. But

know the most important stuff. Man, Adam Henrik's put together a nice little NHL career. A third round pick from the 2008 draft, his career high in scoring is 50 points and he's done it twice. One was in a season where he was traded. At 34 years old, he's got 48 points in 60 games and that was on the Ducks! If you've been watching my stuff for a while, you know I think the Ducks stink. Like they're really bad. They have some pieces, they have some reason for optimism in the future. Right now, the on ice product is awful. Like Adam Henrik in over 60 games with the Anaheim Ducks is a plus 3. Do you know what a miracle that is? There are only 5 guys on the Ducks who have played more than 15 games this season

and are plus players. There's Radko Gudis who has 15 points, Jakob Silverberg who has 16, Oro Vakkanainen who has 11, and Adam Henrik who has 42! So not only is he one of 5 Ducks regulars to be a plus player, he leads them in scoring by a MILE. On a team this bad Henrik's having a season that's pretty good. You're gonna see people sending around charts. I've said this for deals that uh have to do with the Leafs and the Ducks. Ducks charts don't count. Like their advanced numbers and they don't count. They're that bad. Oh did your team get a player from the Ducks? What were the numbers? Bad? Well yeah! I can pretty comfortably guarantee Henrik is gonna have a much better time on the Oilers. I mean this is the Oilers forward group according

to dailyfaceoff.com. I don't think anything changes because of this deal in the top six. Leon Dreisaitl, Connor McDavid, Zach Hyman. Ridiculous. Evander Kane, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Matthias Janmark. Maybe Henrik could replace one of Kane or Janmark? Then that bottom six pfft. Put him wherever you want! Fogel, McLeod, Perry, Brown, Holloway, Ryan. Could the Oilers use defense? Yeah, I'm not a huge believer in that decor. But the Oilers strength is their ability to just run teams over offensively and Adam Henrik will help them do that with solid depth scoring. It's actually kind of funny, despite the fact that Henrik only has 4 playoff games to his name with no points in those 4 playoff games since the 2012 lockout,

he actually was part of the Stanley Cup final run for the New Jersey Devils in 2012. He in 24 games, had 5 goals and one of them was a series winner. And this is gonna be his first real crack at Lord Stanley in over a decade. Not to mention they also get Sam Carrick who's a big mean fella. Honestly, he's just a depth option for the Oilers. I actually think they'll really like him. God bless Connor Brown, you know I love Connor Brown. Um, hmm. His cap hit is wild. And the fact he has five points, five assists in 52 games with Edmonton is… I can't believe it. The Oilers definitely need depth. Do you think they could do better than Sam Carrick? Fair enough. His charts are going around, Jay Fresh and Top Down Hockey do not like this player or at very

least their model does not. It's got some versatility as an option for the right side and center. But here do you want to see something funny? Alex Hobson on Twitter found this exchange. Former oiler Luke Gazdik goes, this is just a great deal for the oil. Great veteran and teammate in Henrique and Edmonton fans you are going to love Sam Carrick. All heart, tough guy, team first guy, big afternoon in oil country. Then someone responds, his stats say otherwise Luke but I'll wait and see. A first seems a bit steep though. Then Luke just goes, what is this? And someone says sending a player card to a former player is crazy. They don't count. That team is butt and they've been butt. And I promise you they haven't been butt because of Sam Carrick. Who by the way with 8 goals and 3 assists for 11 points has more points than Connor Brown already! There you go Edmonton. So Sam Carrick is in his 30s now, he's 32. Years ago he was drafted by the Leafs and he was part of those like last place awful teams. He has not played on great NHL teams. But he's a great story. From Kyle Cushman, shout out to Sam Carrick. Dude battled for a long time in the minors, didn't play more games

in the NHL than the AHL until the 2021-22 season when he was 29 years old. He'll get to play in the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time this season with the Oilers at 32 things you love to see. If you wanna know about a guy who's gonna be motivated, a guy who's gonna be shot out of a cannon, Sam Carrick. Sneaky good pickup. I really like Henrique for the Oilers. Sam Carrick, I'm very interested. Now for the Ducks end of the bargain, they were never gonna keep Henrique, they were never gonna keep Carrick. They get a first round pick out of it. Cool. And a conditional mid round pick. I think they like that very much. It's kinda cut and dry, they're in the middle of it. They

already have some really good young players to their name. I don't know what's going on with Zygris and the trade rumors there but like, Minchukov, Mktavish, Carlsen. They got some really good young players. TAMPA. HUH. Now Tampa I mean is a perennial contender or at very least they're perceived that way. They went to three straight Stanley Cup finals, won two of them and last year they lost in a tight series against the Leafs. Would anyone be surprised if they went on another deep run? I know they don't look as good on paper but it's Tampa. And I was like surely they're a buyer, surely they're tight up against the cap. According to capfriendly.com trade deadline cap space 7.3 almost 7.4. How did they even? Ah ha ha. Sneaky tricky LTIR. Interesting

interesting interesting. This trade hasn't been posted on CapFriendly just yet but Tampa does not have a first rounder in 2024, they don't have one in 2025, they don't have a second rounder in 2024, they don't have their own 4th rounder in 2024. This team needs to recoup some draft picks. And if you can afford to do it by just being a facilitator in a 3 way deal, go for it. Why not? Honestly this is a 3 way deal where I look at it and I go yeah that makes sense. I'd still like the Oilers to do a little bit more. I think it'd be nice to improve their back end. Their goaltending situation is fascinating. I still wonder if they try to unload Jack Campbell. At this point I'm not sure he's getting called up. But for their offensive depth? Beef. Heading

This is a steal for the New York Rangers. Now, I want to talk about this first. You got to understand the Rangers situation. Philip Hedl, losing him, and by the way, a month ago, he was ruled out for the entire season. Although, you know, if they go deep in the playoffs, you never know what can happen. These are hockey players. They're crazy. Losing him is a big, big loss. And the Rangers, obviously, have been doing just fine.

They're leading the division. I think they're second in the Eastern Conference as of this recording. Zabina Jad, Vinny Trocek, you've got depth. But what Alex Wenberg is going to give them, and that's where we're going to start, is i think uh such a undervalued piece this guy um everywhere he's gone has been an analytics darling and i actually looked up his scouting reports from like elite prospects in 2012 and they said at very least he's going to be a useful nhl player and this guy is smooth skater great with the puck you know his career highs and points aren't going to blow anybody away

but again it comes down to usefulness now the trade itself is alex winberg at 50 retained so that's 2.25 million dollars that the rangers are on the hook for probably leaves them a little bit of room to do a little bit more all they gave up was a 2024 second round pick and their 2025 conditional fourth round pick from dallas and the conditions this is from the the nils lungquist trade you remember this one do you remember that trade because he was like a hot prospect and he was traded? Yeah. If Nils Lundqvist earns 55 cumulative points over the 2022-23 and 23-24 regular seasons, the pick upgrades to the Dallas 2025 third round pick. Now let's get into this here. Okay. Nils Lundqvist, is he going to play that amount of hockey this season? Yeah, he

probably is. 45 games already this year. I think that that might be upgraded. So that's pretty cool right like good for them uh that means that seattle gets uh a second this year and a fourth in 2025 or sorry third in 2025 decent enough return i guess for a player that maybe was going to leave but i think the true story here is the fact that these trade deadline prices are not what we thought when chris tana was traded it was had to be a first rounder was going to be a first rounder. No way that it's not going to be a first rounder. It's not a first rounder. It's a second rounder and a prospect that tops out as a six, seven defenseman. Um, when you see some of the other moves that have happened today, Sean Walker went for a first round pick, but I'm looking at

an Alexander Wenberg and what he's going to bring to the New York Rangers throughout the playoffs. This is a guy that can play up and down your lineup. He is a, the ultimate sort of guy that you want in your middle six. He is going to score key goals from time to time. He's going to play key moments power play you can put them on the excuse me penalty kill you can put them on the power play but I think more than this you know going into the playoffs that there's going to be injuries and the attrition rate especially in the first round is is intense and so if the playoffs started today New York's playing Detroit Detroit's not like an overly violent NHL team but I would say that you can expect that somebody is going to get beat up somewhere and what Wenberg

gives you is an opportunity he gives you an opportunity to put him in the top six if you've got one of your your wingers uh down and you need somebody to jump in there he can do that if you need a third line center to be reliable and play roles uh for you on a great team Alex Wenberg's going to do that and he's got playoff experience right he's a a guy that played uh you know people forget Seattle did pretty well in playoffs last year he was on that team um he also was no stranger to the John Tortorella system. This is a guy that played years in Columbus. And if there's anything that we know

about Columbus players of the John Tortorella era is they had to squeeze blood from a stone and play a lot of defense and block a lot of shots. That kind of stuff. As much as it's like, well, it doesn't show up on a chart. It is kind of important come playoff time. Now, if you're into the charts, he charts really well. This is a player that analytics people have loved

for a long, long time as an undervalued player. I think at four and a half or four, 475 or whatever he was really making, frankly, this is a great value add in free agency. It's a great value add when you've got them at 50%. The New York Rangers outside of New York are not talked about enough for how great this team could actually be. This is a top to bottom, strong on defense, strong on offense. I mean, I know Mika Zabinajad hasn't scored even strength in a while, but that'll change, right? That's going to change. And one of the best goaltenders in the league, like a generational goaltending talent, even if he's got a few more years before people recognize him as that.

I'm a big fan of the New York Rangers, a big fan of what they're doing. And Wenberg just doubles down on it. For me, looking at this trade as an outsider, I'm not a New York Rangers fan, but I can tell you, that's a team that you don't want to play in the playoffs. because obviously we know what Zabina Jad is. Vincent Trocek is one of my personal favorite NHL players. Forcek, Backcek, Trocek. We all know the saying. The guy has been spectacular two ways for a really long time.

And Wenberg is going to be a great fill-in for the void that Hedl left. And make no mistake, as much as they've done a great job filling the gap, Hedl was somebody that they're going to miss, is somebody that they're going to miss, and Wenberg jumping in there is going to help things a lot. It's a minor deal. I'm an SDPN. I'm not going to get the major Noah Hannafin video.

Steve's going to do that later tonight, I'm sure, even though he just had a kid. I don't know how he's doing it. But I'll tell you this. I'm a big fan of what the New York Rangers are doing. I wouldn't want to play the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference Finals. As a Toronto Maple Leafs fan,

I'm hoping somebody else gets in because this team is defensively responsible, can score a bunch of goals, has Norris Trophy candidates on defense and Vezina Trophy candidates in that. That's scary. And that's what matters come playoffs. It's not the goofy stats.

As much as I'm a Leaf fan, I love my goofy stats. And Matthew's scoring all the way to the playoffs and Mitch Marder getting 100 points and all that stuff. What matters when you get to the playoffs, it's, and I hate to take a flyer out of another New York team here, the New York Islanders. When the New York Islanders played in the playoffs, when they could get to the playoffs,

they were brutal they were a tough out I think the New York Rangers are going to be a really tough out I I do feel like if they do end up playing Detroit and they could play Tampa but if they do end up playing Detroit they will probably manage Detroit pretty well no question especially with Wenberg here they have so much flexibility of so many players that can play so many different positions I don't think it's going to be that much of a problem then you look at who well who could they play next who's in their division and I'm looking at the Carolina Hurricanes or the Philadelphia Flyers. Now, the Flyers are better than people give them credit for,

but I think even the Flyers would tell you, we're surprised we're here too. There's a reason we call it the mid-tripolitan. It's not the strongest division in the sport, but whatever, you got to play the games, you got to win the games. So if you've got a Carolina-Philly matchup in the first round,

I give, you know, I'm giving it to Carolina based on past history, although they've got some question marks. Philadelphia, again, you wouldn't want to play them in the playoffs. I think the New York Rangers could handle both of those teams. Carolina's got the questions in net. Philadelphia is just playing with house money.

Hey, we're happy to be here. The New York Rangers are serious. They're for real. And they've got this deal done with relatively little cost. Who cares about a second rounder? Who cares about a third rounder in 2025? Nobody cares. The New York Rangers are going to be good and they're going to be good for a long time.

and I wouldn't want to have to play them in the first round or the second round. And if we do, as Leaf fans, have to play them in the third round, well, fine then. So big thumbs up on this trade. It's solid value. And for Seattle, I would say this. Listen, this team was not built really to win now two and a half years ago when they came to the league. Then last year, they had a really good year.

I mean, no one can deny. This year, back to where they sort of were, although they're a little bit better than they were their first season. Get your value, get your picks, keep building that system, keep building that fan base. Nobody really had crazy expectations for them anyway. And really what a second round pick can get you come draft day is plenty of things. Maybe you're looking to make a major move. One of the things that Ron France is always what makes him so interesting as a general manager and a guy who's running a team is that you do get the sense that they're going to start to look for bigger talent, you know, higher end talent to go with the guys like Matty Beneers. So for Seattle, I don't even know if they use this pick. To me, this feels like a pick that could be traded leading up to draft day as a part of a bigger deal. You know, somebody wins the Stanley Cup, a la the Vegas Golden Knights, and three days later, they got to make the Riley Smith trade to Pittsburgh, which is a heartbreaker, but it happens every year. If I'm Seattle, that second round pick is a part of a package for somebody that I can get on my team that really adds value to it. Boy. And yeah, I guess you could always use it too. You never know. It's just going to be in the late 50s, 60s. So we'll see. We'll see what Seattle does with it.

New York Rangers fans, I got to say, enjoy this. You're in a, you got the opportunity of a lifetime here. You got a Carolina Hurricanes team that's always good, that isn't great this year. You've got the rest of the division that's super ho-hum, not much going on. You know that you're probably going to win the division. It's very difficult for Carolina to catch you at this point. Oh baby, what an opportunity. New York could benefit from the Atlantic division absolutely ripping each other's eyeballs out.

And by the time they have to play an Atlantic division team, it's going to be the Eastern Conference final. Just get there. And you're in the finals. Just get there. Florida is going to play Tampa, likely. Toronto is going to play Boston, likely. Those teams are going to kill each other.

And all you have to do is watch them kill each other for a couple of rounds. And then you get to kind of sweep up the remainder. The New York Rangers have an opportunity this year. I'm actually, I'd be surprised if they don't go and make some other big move. Wow. terrible time. Speaking of terrible time, who's having a terrible time today? Anybody who likes the Leafs who also likes analytics. Tom LeCision posted this player card of Joel Edmondson who is listed as 6 foot 5, 221 pounds and he's just awful! Oh my goodness! He is below league average in basically every measurable everything. Look at this! Oh my gosh it's a nightmare! It's actually terrifying! It's beyond terrifying! It's terrible! Terrifying and terrible! Look at this! Look at here! There's what it looks like next to my face. Still bad. Still bad. It's next to something ugly and it still looks ugly! That is terrible! I know I'm handsome don't worry about it. So there's one picture and it's one thing to say oh he's bad analytically well what

does that mean? It means that when Joel Edmondson is on the ice the other team usually has the puck, they are usually in the offensive zone, they are usually getting shot attempts and they are usually getting shots on goal that might even result in a scoring chance. Here's Joel Edmondson cross-checking Wayne Simmonds in the face. This only got a $5,000 fine. who sort of let go of his stick, that was fortunate. But then Joel Edmondson is the guy who WHAMMO! WHAMMO! Right in the flesh and bone! CRACK! Hi-yah! $5,000. Steve didn't you get the memo that you're not allowed to crosscheck players in the face especially after a whistle? Well, you know, there's a reason that Leaf fans were upset about the whole Morgan Rielly thing! Because there's some confusion in the wording of the memo! for the millionth time you cannot do what Morgan Rielly did to Ridley Greig. I'm gonna say it again, in VERY plain English so that everyone, are we listening class? BOYS AND GIRLS! You cannot crosscheck someone in the head. Joel Edmondson learned that very hard

lesson during the Leafs-Habs playoff series in 2021. Because he crosschecked Wayne Simmonds in the head and neck and that's 5 grand he'll NEVER get back. Because Joel Edmondson's earnings are listed at $20,151,935 but after this cross-check against Wayne Simmons it's only $20,146,935. How is he gonna get by? How is he gonna survive? How will I breathe without you? Listen, hockey as a product, in my opinion, is the best sport on earth. the best sport on earth. The NHL, the National Hockey League, as a product is nonsensical. Illogical. Barely even a thing. Because organized sports, a professional sports league, a league where rules are made and followed and discipline is handed out when you break them, like that's

very rigid. You must do this and this and this and this. The NHL is a lot more like recess. And there's like a staff meeting or like cake in the staff room or something. You let all the kids outside, they're gonna have their fun and they know that they have to return to class at the bell. What's that? You lost a couple teeth? Well what'd you expect? It's recess! And then the school proceeds to suspend one out of like every five kids who knock someone's teeth out and you can't help but notice that every single time it's the kid wearing blue and white who gets suspended! And you say to yourself, well as long as the precedent going forward is everyone going- AND IT'S NEVER GOING

forward is it? IT'S NEVER! So, you can show this, put the Dom graphic up again. You can show this, alright? Here's the problem I have with pointing out Joel Edmondson's analytics and everything. Did we not have this same conversation with Ben Chirot? I swear it was Ben Chirot and Joel Edmondson as a pair, and yes it was a few years ago with the Montreal series. This de-pairing is not there to have the puck more than you. They're not there to out scoring chance you, they're not even there to out shoot you shots on goal, they're not even there to have more shot attempts than you. They are there to BEAT the WHEELS off of you. BREAK VERTEBRAE in games 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 so that by the time 5 and 6

and seven roll around you don't really want to be there anymore. Which is when the other better players ideally take over. That's what's going on here. The rule book changes in the playoffs. It simply does. This is why I made the comparison to recess. It's just bloody chaos. Now just wait till Edmondson does this in the first round against Boston or something. He might be down another five grand right? That's what we all expect right? Here's a non-screamy way to look at it and I think it's very logical and it also looks at what the Leafs top six could be. From Justin Bourne who is just fantastic. Riley Lubushkin, Benoit McCabe, Edmondson Brodie, with Brodie being on the right. Already I don't know how much I love that but continue. Then with

And with the extras being Giordano, Lillegren, Lagasin, Timmons. Leafs probably trade a D and recoup some picks I'd imagine? Question mark? I actually agree with that. Edmondson is a left shot but checks a lot of other boxes for the Leafs. Just 30 years old, just. 22 game cup win with St. Louis, I forgot about that. Cup final with Montreal, 6 foot 5, 220 decisions, penalty kills and blocked shots. Feels like it gives Leafs more responsible adults back there. I don't know if it's a great use of assets, probably not. Or if the Leafs wouldn't have been better with xyz move but he improves them for playoffs this year anyway, incrementally. There's two things there. Number one, I totally forgot

to tell you what the Leafs traded for Joel Edmondson. I had a kid recently, I'm very retired. It was four days ago. Five days ago? I don't know. It's a third round pick and a fifth round pick. I believe it is the third round pick that the Leafs got in return for Pierre Engvall from the Islanders and a fifth round pick, one of the fifth round picks that the Leafs got from the Chicago Blackhawks in last year's deal for Sam Lafferty and Jake McCabe. With all the love in my heart, what a damning indictment of this Leafs decor And what a DAMNING indictment of Timothy Liljegren that this deal was even made and that he's not in this projected lineup. William Lagson I believe is gonna be put on waivers. Connor

Timmons is going on LTIR. If a Leafs defenseman is gonna be traded to recoup picks, just like last year with Rasmus Sandin, I think it's gonna be Timothy Liljegren. I don't know where he's gonna go. And it's so disappointing. And also, kinda risky. I don't want Connor Timmons playing playoff games. Who even knows if he's gonna be healthy enough to play playoff games? Even though you have Joel Edmondson now, and you got Ilya Labushkin. Labushkin, if Lillegren is not in the lineup, is your only right hander and… What?! WHAT?! We went into this deadline thinking, oh they just need to go out and get a right handed D pair partner for Rielly and okay they went out and got Lubushkin, he'll be a nice stopgap

and what do you mean he's the full time guy? It could certainly be worse but wow could it be a lot better. Now, Joel Edmondson from Montreal, we saw that guy. That was a few years ago. He was with the Washington Capitals this season. A team that we know is not having a really good time right now. So forget Montreal Joel Edmondson, even though he still got that resume and still got that experience, what is he now? At 30 years old after all the injuries that he's battled. I spoke to Ian Oland of RMNB, one of the best team sites out there they cover the Capitals so in depth, and here's what he sent me over text. I'll be optimistic, Ian said. Always a good start. He missed the first part of the year

because he got hurt, which has been a constant theme lately in his career. His first 10-15 games were pretty bad and he looked slow. Now he's even-ish and a decent penalty killer. He has a surprisey link big shot but rarely uses it. We initially thought he'd be more physical like Brooks or Pick in terms of sheer physicality, but he's just kind of there and hard to move. The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded a 2026 sixth rounder to the Carolina Hurricanes for Cade Webber, a defenseman who the Hurricanes drafted in the fourth round in 2019. I thought this tweet from Mike Stevens was very funny. Guess how tall this dude is? I'll give you a hint, he's not short. SIX FOOT SIX! He just turned 23 years old in January. He's actually listed under 200 pounds on EliteProspects.com. Six foot six, under 200 pounds. STEAK FOR BREAKFAST YOUNG MAN. Don't look at me that's exactly what the Leafs organization is probably gonna tell him to do. I've seen some sites say 6'7".

I mean with any player in the NHL you just gotta give a grace of like an inch or two. Which now that I say it out loud and into a camera is kind of a funny clip. So how did this come to be? How did Cade Webber get drafted in the 4th round in 2019? Well, he was big. He played with the Rivers school in USHS prep and he was nearly a point of game defenceman with 12 goals. The season after he went to the Penticton Vs of the BCHL, which if you don't know is Junior A, it's one of the better Junior A leagues out there. It's been in the news recently because it's trying to do its own thing. And his offense dried up significantly, just 5 points in 23 games, just 2 goals. Then obviously COVID happened,

screw COVID it ruins everything. Since then he has played 115 games over the last 4 seasons for Boston University, an incredibly good program but remember that time he said 115 16 points! In those games. So the reason we keep bringing up his height is it's relevant. There's a reason why Brad Treliving and his management staff wanted this guy. He's huge. It certainly wasn't for his offensive ability, who knows maybe there's a little bit more there than he was letting on. This is a program that has Lane Hudson in it after all, Boston University does not have trouble generating offense. But he's huge, he's already an adult, he's 23 years old. If they sign him to a contract which I imagine they're gonna do in short order. He goes to the Marlies after

Boston University season is done. There's the potential of him being called up, I don't know, I think this is more of a system move. But a 6th round pick is actually a decent price to pay for a prospect that you believe could play professional games for your organization, maybe even with your big club. And there's years already down the line in his development. what are the odds that a sixth rounder is gonna make the NHL? They're probably, worst case, about as good as Cade Webber's chances are. He's also the assistant captain of Boston University so like, you know, character and leadership and all that. It's extra relevant when you consider that Boston University already has 12 NHL draft prospects on it, not including Cade Webber. They're

a really good program. In fact, one of the players on their roster who's not already an NHL prospect is their top scorer Macklin Celebrini who's very likely gonna go first overall in the 2024 draft. Here's a review from someone who's actually seen him. Colby Cohen, former NHL player, I've watched Cade Webber play about 100 games at BU. He's a 6'7", there's that discrepancy again, a 6'7 physical shot blocking machine who skates well and can make a first pass. This is a well developed prospect and is 100% worth a 6th round pick by the Leafs. That's just the eye test saying oh he blocks shots but you don't know if that's 100% true. Here are the numbers from Kyle Cushman. Cade Webber is a 6 foot 7, there it is again, 216 POUNDS!

I gotta put the tweet next to me just so you can watch me read it. Cade Webber is 6 foot 7, 216 pounds per BU's site. So wow. He has put on weight compared to the number that elite prospects has. That's like a difference of, what is that? 20 pounds? Okay so he's big, he would already be one of the heaviest and tallest players on the roster. A near zero offensively but leads the Terriers with 107 blocks. Next closest is his D partner with 66. He's in his final NCAA season and needs to be signed before August 15th. Expect him to join the Marlies when BU's run is over. It's a smart move for Carolina too, I mean they drafted a player they obviously liked otherwise

they wouldn't have used a fourth round pick on him. Covid sort of screwed some things up, that doesn't necessarily mean he fell out of favour with the Hurricanes it just means they talked to the kid, they weren't gonna be able to sign him, trade deadlines tomorrow, they called up Brad Treliving and said hey how about you give us that person. Brad said is he big? And they said shut up you have his elite prospects page open right now. Brad said yes I do. Carolina said well he's actually 20 pounds heavier than that and Brad said shut up and make that trade call! Interesting little move. Now, things are slowly taking shape, well quickly taking shape with the Leafs decor. They got Labushkin. Big. Snot. They got Joel

Edmondson. Big. Snot. Timothy Lillegren. Might be coming out of the lineup. Pretty soon. Big-ish zero snot. No snot. The like just no snot. Napkin. I didn't know what to say there? What's the absence of snot? Dry nostril player. So the Leafs trade another pick, they're sorta running out of picks. A player who they might deal at this deadline, I'm starting to feel it happening, could be Timothy Liljegren. I've recruited Mike Stevens who's been a guest on the Steve Dangle Podcast in the past, he's written basically everywhere most recently with the Associated Press. Here he is to talk about Timothy Liljegren, his relationship with the leafs as a organization and he's going to expand on some things like

sean walker and tyler toffoli who has not been dealt yet one name to monitor when it comes to the leafs in the lead up to the deadline and it might not be imminent right now it's timothy lilligrant now when brad tree living took over this team in the summer he surveyed the roster and lilligrant was identified as a player that doesn't necessarily play his type of hockey And if you look at the acquisitions of the Joel Edmondsons and the Elia Labushkins, they're almost diametrically opposed players to Timothy Lilligren in that they're big, they don't move the puck as well as Lilligren does, and they're more physical and sort of disrupting the rush type players. And Lillegren's stock has fallen within the organization. You can just see it from the outside and also from indications that I've got is that he was a scratch during the playoffs at times last year

and also he was called out publicly by his coach. The possibility could be that he is included in a bigger package to get that top four right shot defenseman that they need or potentially, again, package someone else to get a first round pick that could replace a 2021 first or 2024 first that they could potentially move out, move away from, move out for that top right defenseman however that's been a sticking point in a lot of things namely in Sean Walker the Leafs were in on Sean Walker they've been monitoring him basically since

the start of training camp however the Flyers have stood firm when it comes to his price which being a first round pick and they eventually got that from the Colorado Avalanche obviously have to take on a bigger contract but you know that they had this cap space to do that now up front with the Leafs they are one of the teams that are in on Tyler Toffoli Toffoli is the bell of the ball here. He has 26 goals. He's in 61 games. He's a veteran guy. He's won before. He's a proven playoff performer. The price is extremely high on him from the Devils if they decide to actually sell and sell him. And what a lot of teams are doing and viewing Tyler Toffoli as is Jake Gensel insurance because Jake Gensel is the top forward on the market right now. And the price is extremely

high from Kyle Dubas. And if they feel that they got priced out of Jake Gensel, they will now turn their sights to Tyler Toffoli. Now, it's been reported and also indicated to me that the Vegas Golden Knights are obviously monitoring it just in case they get priced out of Gensel. The Vancouver Canucks

are another team that is looking at they could have a reunion. They're interested in Tyler Toffoli if they lose out on Gensel. And the LA Kings are a team that have expressed interest in a reunion with Toffoli. And if you even look at their moves,

they placed some guys on waivers today to open up some cap space. There are a lot of moving parts. prices can change based on the market however it does seem like teams are viewing this as if they don't get Gensel they turn it to Foley and the Leafs are one of those teams in on to Foley all very spicy and all stuff that we're going to be keeping an eye on very hard for tomorrow's trade deadline I wonder if by less than 24 hours from now Timothy Lilligren is still with the Leafs for now, that is it for this one. saw this coming until late this afternoon i'm recording this on wednesday night late this afternoon the machinations started machinating and we got some little tremors that the vegas golden knights were in on noah hannifin and then later in the evening towards the night we got official word it's done the trade call is in noah hannifin is going to the vegas golden knights And then it wasn't official. And then we just waited for the actual details. And then finally, now, middle of the night on Wednesday, we get official word and all of the trade details that Vegas got Noah Hannafin from Calgary. And the lesson that we need to learn here is if there is a star player available, Vegas will go after them and they usually will land them.

So here are the full details of the Hannafin trade to Vegas. Going to Las Vegas, Noah Hannafin and Mikhail Vorobiev. Noah Hannafin is 75% retained. The Philadelphia Flyers swoop in. They get a 2024 fifth round pick from Vegas for retaining 25% of Noah Hannafin's salary. And to the Calgary Flames, Danil Mirmanov and a 2025 first round pick that is top 10 protected if it lands within the top 10 then calgary will get vegas's 2026 first round pick and they also get a 2025 third round pick that is also conditional and the conditions on that pick are that vegas must advance to the second round and if they do advance to the second round the third round pick becomes a second round pick so what we have here is miraman off a first and

a second because i think we can all assume at this point that vegas will advance to the second round and the Stanley Cup goes through Las Vegas. They won it last year. It is theirs. They own it. I don't care what the standings say. I don't care where they sit right now. When they get to the playoffs,

they are the favorites and the Stanley Cup goes through them. I'm going to read their top six defensemen and tell me this isn't the most scary decor in the National Hockey League. Hannafin Petro, McNabb Theodore, Alec Martinez is now on injured reserve to make room for Noah Hannafin. So that other spot's going to be like Nick Haag or Ben Hutton or Tobias Bjornfort.

And then Zach Whitecloud is going to be the last pairing defenseman there. That is some big, hefty men playing on the back end. And there's a lot of salt in the water right now. Which water's salty? The ocean? Is it the Black Sea? which is the most salty body of water, because that is NHL fans in the Pacific Division right now, because there's a lot of talk about the LTIR circumvention and all that nonsense.

Before I get into that, let me tell you something. Calgary Flames talk is coming up, and it's going to be done by Julian McKenzie of the Chris Johnson Show and of The Athletic, where he is the Calgary Flames beat writer. Who better to talk about the Flames than the guy who covers the flames day in and day out. So I'm going to leave that to Julian. I'm going to just say that I'm personally disappointed in the work that Craig Conroy has done here. I think for Noah Hannafin, you need more than the first and the second round pick. You need some solidified prospects. I don't think Miramanov is that. I don't think Magic Beans are enough when you're trading away guys who are this good and relatively young and who can play top pair minutes on a very

good decor a first and a second doesn't seem like enough but julian's gonna get into that that's just my quick thoughts on what calgary's done here plus it's a division rival is there not a upcharge to trading within a division besides all that speaking of division let's get into the salt because a lot of you a lot of you pacific division fans are salty for no reason all 32 teams are operating under the same darn rules. But for some reason, when Vegas decides to put somebody on LTIR and they open up a bunch of space, it's their fault that the rules have been made in this way. Hate the game, not the player. It's the reverse of that old saying of hate the player, hate the game. You got to hate the game this time because the NHL has set up this goofy ass system where

teams can take advantage of it. And the Vegas Golden Knights are just doing what they can within the rules. If they couldn't do this, they wouldn't be able to. And what I'm talking about right now is if you go to CapFriendly and you look at the Vegas Golden Knights and you take a look at what they have on LTIR, a lot of people are upset about it because it gives them this ability to acquire a player like Noah Hannafin. And then for the playoffs, a bunch of guys are healthy again and they're like oh they used all that space for free and blah blah blah blah right now on their long-term injury reserve is mark stone and robin lennar robin lennar is never going to play a game again in the national hockey league and mark stone everybody complaining about mark

stone going on ltir and then becoming healthy and playing in the playoffs i get you guys vegas didn't make the playoffs in 2022 he he was injured in 2022 for back surgery and they didn't make the playoffs he didn't get healthy for the playoffs because they weren't there last year yeah it worked out where his his schedule to return landed a week before the end of the regular season you hold him out for those extra couple games so then he can play in the playoffs this year though guys this year he has a lacerated spleen his spleen is cut i'm not a doctor but you can't fake a lacerated spleen i don't understand nine teams right now in the playoffs are using ltir space There's 16 total in the National Hockey League that are above the salary cap limit.

Yes, 16 teams. Half of the NHL is currently using LTIR space. They are above the salary cap limit. The NHL has made a system that doesn't work. This is nonsense. the the rules are goofy and they're way too complicated for anybody to understand but when you just specifically complain about the vegas golden knights having players injured and then them coming back for the playoffs it's not a golden knights problem it's an nhl problem and

i'll never stop hammering that it's a ridiculous thing to call out a guy's lacerated spleen and say that they're cheating the system because his spleen is cut. And because he cut his spleen, they can now get Noah Hannafin and the Vegas Golden Knights are cheating. That is a ridiculous loop of logic. What you should be upset about, like I said, is the CBA and how it's written and how this is the goofiest, most nonsense salary gap that you could ever have in pro sports. That's the real problem here. And that is a thing we should all be upset about and to go back to the on ice stuff with the vegas golden knights i read off the d pairings before and they've just solidified an already great part of their lineup

the defense was excellent they play great system hockey and they made an anthony mantha trade earlier you can go watch steve dangle's video on that and they have this ability to run four lines at all times we've talked about this before and how playoff hockey is being of the run your four lines wave after wave after wave and vegas has that they have so much depth in their in their four group and now they have just an unbelievable amount of depth on defense they know they can ride eight and hill for 16 wins and four rounds of playoffs the stanley cup goes through vegas it is theirs to keep until somebody can knock them off this team is a problem and right now if i'm looking at it i don't care what the standings say the vase golden knights are the favorites to win

the stanley cup for the calgary flames we have julian mckenzie who's gonna speak about what this means for them this trade is still pretty fresh at the time i'm recording this so it is entirely possible that my opinions if this will change but this is a really weird trade on the surface a first round pick that's actually a 2025 first round pick a conditional third round pick that could turn into a second depending on what vegas does this year and daniel miramanov he is the most interesting part of this entire deal considering the offensive mindedness of his game while also coming off significant knee surgery is is this a guy that the flames are really into that's what it seems like in a statement that craig conroy provided after the trade he lauded

him for his size his his skill and and what he's able to provide with that frame very intriguing player but is this enough for for Noah Hannafin who has meant so much for this defense in the span of a week this team has offloaded Chris Tanev and Noah Hannafin that was a whole pairing for those guys and I know that Noah Hannafin has played up and down the lineup and as has Chris Tanev but those two guys have spent a lot of time together and those guys are gone now and Joel Hanley Jordan Osterley Dennis Gilbert and now Mira Manov those guys are expected to pick up the slack in those two guys's absence I don't know this I would I thought going into this deadline Noah Hannafin would be a guy who could fetch a first round pick this year who could fetch a prospect

there's no significant prospects in this deal which I think is is is a loss for the Flames in this count i think for a player like noah hannifin for what the flames are trying to do getting younger getting good prospects even if this even like even if it wasn't going to be a higher end prospect i think they should have gotten something there but ultimately they did not and it puts a lot of pressure on miramanov to be this player that was worth the trade if he doesn't have to be the equivalent the equivalent of what noah hannifin has been for the team but miramanov still has to be worth that move and i'll say this with the 2025 first round pick a lot of people looking at the sean monaghan trade and the fact that the montreal canadians are supposed to be taking a

first round pick if they don't take a first round pick this year from the flames provided it ends in the ends up within the 2032 range the canadians would be able to pick a first round pick next year which is either going to be one of the flames ones or the or the one they have from the florida panthers you could tell this is a very elongated trade but let me just put it to you like this That pick that they get from Vegas, not subjected to that. So the Flames are at the very least going to have that first-round pick in 2025, which should have been one from 2024. That is a big question.

And up to now, we've seen reports of teams like Tampa Bay being very interested in Noah Hannafin and whether or not that might have played a role in the market being as it was. We don't have those answers to those questions. There's a lot to wonder about when it comes to Craig Conroy, but on the surface, I think when you look at the trades that have been completed by Craig Conroy from last summer to now, if you're accounting for the Tyler Toffoli trade, the Elias Lindholm trade, Nikita Zdorov, and Tanev, at least on the surface, if you're ranking them, you're a Flames fan and you're ranking them, I don't think you put this trade on the higher end of that list. But you have to wait and see what that pick turns into, what Mira Manoff turns into. I didn't even mention the salary retention and all this as well with Philadelphia being involved. But yeah, there's a lot left to be waiting, left to be wanting when it comes to this trade.

For the past three seasons, Troy Stetcher has been traded at the deadline. So in 2022, Stetcher went from the Detroit Red Wings to the Los Angeles Kings for a seventh round pick.

In March of 2023, Stetcher went from the Coyotes, who he signed with in the offseason, to the Calgary Flames with Nick Ritchie. And in return, they traded away Brett Ritchie and Connor McKee. And then this season, what we're here to talk about is the Edmonton Oilers have now acquired Troy Stetcher from the Arizona Coyotes, who he re-signed with this past offseason after being traded to the Flames. He went back to the Coyotes, and now the Coyotes have flipped him again. And this time in return, they have received a 2027 fourth round pick, and they've also sent back a 2024 seventh round pick with Troy Stetcher to the Edmonton Oilers. And this deal, it's for a right-handed defenseman from the Arizona Coyotes who's not named Matt Dumba. A lot of the rumors

is that Matt Dumba is on the move. He's probably going to get moved before tomorrow. But the Edmonton Oilers went for the cheaper version of Matt Dumba, and that is Troy Stetcher. And if you are looking for Edmonton to acquire some big hulking D to compete with a team like Vegas, who just continues to stack six, five guys on their back end, or Colorado, who is a big team in their own right edmonton didn't go that way they went with a depth defenseman in troy stetcher who's 510 185 pounds who's probably not going to crack their lineup right away or full time but they're gonna have troy stetcher as a seventh defenseman for their playoff run and there's a couple things with with stetcher that you look at and you say okay he's definitely going to be

useful he was playing he played four games with the los angeles kings during their playoff run when they acquired him at the trade deadline. And for Edmonton, depth is always going to be something they need. We know that the playoffs are a war of attrition, and it doesn't hurt to give up an asset in a fourth round pick three years from now to get that depth. And you also get the seventh back. And I don't hate this idea of having Troy Stetcher for the stretch run towards the playoffs. Now the Oilers coaching staff have the ability to replace either Cody Ceci or Vinny on the right side whatever they like you know Troy Stetcher can fit in the lineup there on any given night from now until the playoffs and maybe a little bit in the playoffs he's been playing over

18 minutes a night in Arizona so we know that he's been trusted to be in an NHL lineup for a lot of minutes night in and night out and now for really nothing the Edmonton Oilers have that extra body and for the Oilers they've been playing the greatest hockey in the history of their franchise. And that is not hyperbole. This is from Sportsnet Stats this afternoon. The Oilers are 33-8-1 in their last 42 games. This is their most wins in a 42-game span in a single season in franchise history. So I don't know if the Oilers are done, if Ken Holland, if Jeff Jackson, who's really running the show there, are done for today and tomorrow. But if you look at their cap situation. This one is from Puckpedia. If the Oilers made no further moves through the end of

the season, they would finish with a cap hit of $83,475,000. That means that that $25K of the $3.45 million bonuses already earned by Brown and Perry would not be charged to next season as an overage. So with that being said, I don't think avoiding cap overage charges, because right now they're perfect that's something i complained about very early on in the season is how hey you gave connor brown these bonuses and they're gonna be on your cap for next season because you're gonna spend to the cap and then they gave out cory they gave cory perry bonuses and those are gonna be on the cap and now they're in a situation where they can avoid those overages i don't think that is enough reason to not make another deal even though i think the oilers are very good and

the adam henrik deal is excellent for their offense and they could be good as they are but if there's an opportunity to do more don't i hope ken holland and jeff jackson don't look at next year's cap as a deterrent to do that because their oilers are so good right now as illustrated by the record over the last 42 games you need to do everything you can here this season to try and get this team to win because you have an unbelievable team this year and it's going to be real tough going through vegas going through colorado wherever they end up in the first two rounds of the playoffs, wherever they end up in terms of the seating and their division placement, it's going to be a hard matchup in that first round and they need all the help they can get.

TRADES! TWO OF THEM! Two Colorado ones as well. The Colorado Avalanche made two trades on Wednesday, two days before the trade deadline. They made another two on Thursday and these guys sneakily doing a fantastic job. McFarlane, Sakic and company. And no, Producer Drew did not pay me to say that. First, the Avalanche dealing with a divisional rival. The Avs acquired depth winger Brandon Duhaime from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for a third round pick which is a decent pick but it's down the road in 2026. Which is actually a deal that could work out decently for the Wild because the Avs are really really good now, two years from now who knows. It could be better but it's a wild card. Then a second deal with another divisional rival, this

one a little trickier. The Colorado Avalanche acquire big forward Yaakov Trennan as well as WHL defenseman Graham Sward in exchange for WHL defenseman, there's another one, Jeremy Hanzl and a 20-25 third round pick. So if you're into the niche of Colorado Avalanche third round picks well this is a bad day for you. There is a theme here. The Trennan trade to me it's Yaakov Trennan for a third round pick. The swap of WHL defensive prospects is to me just a wash. The main difference is Jeremy Hanzl who went to the Nashville Predators is under contract whereas Graham Sward, it's just his signing rights. So he could tell the Avalanche to take a hike. Which is an opportunity they might not turn

down on account of it's Denver and the mountains are beautiful. Dad humor- we had a baby on Sunday shut up I'm tired. There is a theme here though with what Colorado is doing. Brandon Duhaime, Andrew Cogliano, Yakov Trennan. Yakov Trennan! 10 goals in 60 games, he's only got uh, 14 points. 6 foot 2, 200 pounds! And Brandon Duhaime in 62 games, 4 goals, 4 assists, 8 points. 6 foot 2, 200 pounds! BIG MEATY MEN SLAPPING MEAT. Listen, Ryan Johansen it seems like they couldn't get rid of fast enough so he's gone. Obviously their decor looks a lot different with Sean Walker coming in and uh, Bowen Byram going out. But that 4th line is big and nasty right now with Duhaime and Trennan, who Trennan

by the way can also play some centre. Now you might be saying to yourself, alright so they only spent a 3rd round pick on Duhaime, I can live with that. They only spent a 3rd round pick on Trennan, I can live with that. Do the Avalanche have any picks left? And the answer is not no, it's almost no, but it's not no. Get a load of this. The Colorado Avalanche have no 2nd and no 3rd in this draft. They have their 4th, they don't have their own 5th but they do have Seattle's. They have their 6th, they have two 7ths. Next year! No 1st! No 2nd! No 3rd! They have a 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th. And then even in 2026 they don't have a 3rd. But here's what they do have. A little bit of potential for Gabriel Landeskog

to come back and play games. Also, a little bit of wiggle room under the cap in part because of LTIR. And their 2024 first round pick. They do have their 2026 first round pick but like that's, that's down the line man. I wonder if for the right price that first round pick this year could be had. I guess we'll see. I think their decor got better, I think their offense got way better and obviously once they recover from the injury bug a little bit, once these players actually fly to Colorado and get in the lineup. And if you don't believe me, check out Dom LeCision. He's got a chart for you. He's got a smart guy chart.

Now, I'm not a smart guy, and I don't understand every chart, but I can understand this history. Let's talk about it. How did Gus Forsling, a fifth-round pick, get to be a top-line defenseman playing with Aaron Ekblad every night? for the Florida Panthers. Well, the Vancouver Canucks traded him as a prospect to the Chicago Blackhawks in 2015 for Adam Clendenning. And then four years later, after he plays about 30, 40 games every year with the Chicago Blackhawks, they trade him to the Carolina Hurricanes along with Anton Forsberg for Calvin DeHaan, which was a big move at the time, right? That's a big draft day move. The interesting thing about Forsling in Carolina is he didn't play. They acquire him,

but then they make him play in the AHL the entire year, and then they waived him. Smartly, the Florida Panthers picked him up, and he played really, really well, and he signed for a couple of years at $2.666667 million. That's right. There's a 67 in there, and they beat the Leafs last year in the playoffs. It's fitting. Now, that deal, great term on that, three years, $8 million, and he gets the chance to establish himself. Now, the Panthers have been dominant, but oftentimes we focus on their forwards. We talk about Kachuk. We talk about Nick Cousins being a rat. We talk about Sam Bennett being an absolute missile. We don't talk a lot about their defense, even though it's really

strong. And I just want to kind of contextualize this for you as much as I can when it comes to how strong the Ekblad-Forsling pairing is. Now, Panthers fans, you already know this. um Forsling himself has nine goals and 22 assists in 61 games he's averaging about 22 minutes a night and his plus rating this year is 44 he's a plus 44 this year that is bonkers by the way he finished two years ago as a plus 41 this is a very very very good hockey player and crazy value for a guy that's playing top line minutes on your defense if you're into Corsi his Corsi is near 60 uh for five on five leads um he is a uh i think his expected goals uh is 58.29 that's crazy when he's on the ice he's a real factor and a real force and it's pretty amazing that bill zito got

him at this aav but i think it speaks to a couple of things first off um when you put a system together like the florida panthers have uh especially in the last couple of years remember they won the president's trophy a couple of years ago, had a bit of like a fall off last year. And then all the way, it went all the way to the Stanley cup finals. You know what I mean? It's weird. Cause we look at last year for the Florida Panthers as though they struggled and they did in the regular season, but we all remember the playoffs year before they won the president's trophy. They ran away with it. And I think what's been fascinating is watching players willing to resign because they believe in the process. Now does Forsling, if he hits the open

market this year make more money, I feel like you can almost bet on it. I can't imagine how that's not possible. But sometimes it's great to be in a state where it's warm all the time and you got a chance to win the Stanley Cup and hey, the taxes are low too. Not so bad. And what's frustrating as a non-Florida Panthers fan is how good this makes them for a long time to come. Because not only is this player a factor every time he hits the ice, he's only 27 years old. This is a guy that's going to be around for a long, long time. And I feel like as a Florida Panthers fan, if you're looking at this, you want to keep this group together. You've got something good here. The vibes are immaculate. You look at their last 10 games, they're on an absolute tear.

It was looking like Boston was going to run away with the Atlantic division. And now we're not even considering that. Now Boston's fumbled the bag a little bit there, but Florida had to win like every game and they've won almost every game uh they are going to be scary come playoff time they're physical they're very very strong and uh they can score a bunch of goals too and they're opportunistic that was the thing last year in the playoffs this team has the pieces to be opportunistic opportunistic all the time and let's be honest if you're Forsling why leave that you're guaranteed a spot next to Aaron Eckblad you got chemistry It works.

You're having fun. Like I said, the vibes are immaculate. This is a great signing by Bill Zito. This is a great team in Florida. Finally, we're finally getting sustained success in Sunrise. And if I wasn't a Leafs fan, I'd be thrilled for them. But I'm a Leafs fan. I'm still thrilled for them, except if they play the Leafs.

So congrats to Gus Forsling. This is a great signing. And I almost wonder if it was preempted. It's so weird that it happened next to the trade deadline. I wonder if there was a little bit, and I don't know if this is the case or not, wonder if there was a little bit of, well, we better sign here and get this done or we might have to make a trade. Don't know that that's the case, but it sort of feels weird with the timing, doesn't it? Anyway, there's your breakdown. Gus Forsling, Florida Panthers, a pain in the

ass for the next eight years, and congrats to them. Let's talk about Anthony Beauvillier, who's had a really interesting year this year a couple of trades already and this latest one in nashville is an interesting one because anthony bevillier is an interesting piece for the national nashville predators if you remember he split last season between the new york islanders and vancouver canucks and it was really strange when the canucks picked him up because it was like they're not going anywhere and they're not really doing anything but we're gonna we're gonna get anthony bevillier okay fine good the canucks dealt him 22 games into this season to the chicago blackhawks the Chicago Blackhawks then sent him to the Nashville Predators for a fifth round pick.

Now, Bevilier's production is a little bit down this year. That's not just a product of playing on the Chicago Blackhawks, who aren't great. It's also because he had a wrist injury. He's been back for about a month, but he hasn't scored a lot. This is a guy that's got four goals this entire season. And even on a team like the Blackhawks, where a veteran player who's got some speed and got some skill like Bevilier does, you've got to remember, this guy was a late first round pick back in the day. He was still only getting about 14 minutes a night.

So it doesn't really feel like a fit. Why does he fit the Nashville Predators? Well, the Nashville Predators are interesting because they are like the ultimate depth team. If you look at the Nashville Predators, the scoring is completely spread out. Let's go through the list here, okay? You got Phillip Forsberg, who's outrageously good. 64 points in 63 games. Yossi, outrageously good.

61 points in 63 games. And then you got guys like O'Reilly, Nyquist, Novak. Tommy Novak who just signed that extension the fall off in points that was really interesting Ryan O'Reilly 54 points Nyquist with 53 and then fifth on team scoring is Tommy Novak and then Colton Sissons with 34 and 32 respectively and it just goes down from there now I'm not expecting Anthony Baviglia to get crazy points by coming to the Nashville Predators but what he does give them are options they're probably going to the playoffs this year unless something absolutely catastrophic happens and you get injuries and you need guys like Baviglia to play up and down your lineup now

as i said he's done some center he's done some left wing he gives you that flexibility and this is a guy that at his height you know right before the pandemic which feels like eons ago now he was a 40 35 40 point guy those guys become extremely valuable in the playoffs when you're talking about your top guys having wrist injuries or back injuries or whatever else comes up now like i said bevilier has had a wrist injury and it seems to have affected his play they're really hard to shake off mid season. Um, but you know, this is hockey, everybody's playing with something and he's going to have to figure it out. I'm, I'm curious about how often he draws into the lineup over the guys that are already there. The thing about Nashville and you know, it could be because

they didn't go see you too, uh, is they play really well as a team as is. And when general managers, uh, or presidents in this case with, um, Barry Trotz make deals, they have to take into account what's working with their team and why. And the interesting thing about the Nashville Predators is going into the season, not many people would have really pegged them as like a guaranteed, absolutely going to the playoffs team. But what they do is they play a great team game, very Barry Trotz hockey. Just double down on that defense, prevent shots, don't score a lot. I mean, it's the Nashville Predators of old under Barry Trotz all over again. And I think the New York Islanders more recently where Barry Trotz was coaching are another great example of what

that can be. Um, but Billy, I can fit into that because he's useful. He's going to find roles on this roster. And I don't think it's really set in stone what he's going to do right away. Uh, but he certainly helps that ability to kind of switch things around. And as I said, you don't want to mess too much with team chemistry and maybe Nashville feels like we got a good thing going. Let's add a little bit of depth and we'll see where this goes. Somebody inevitably is going down in the playoffs with an injury and bevillier helps that so uh the interesting thing i think for the chicago blackhawks is you know last year they were such players at the deadline this year they're not really expected to do all that much there isn't a lot to sell and the guys that you would

expect them to sell like you know a peter morazic have actually signed on to stay on longer because a it's a guaranteed job at really good money and b um somebody's got to play for it they can't just keep selling. Conor Bedard has got to play with somebody next year and this year too. So for the Chicago Blackhawks, I'm wondering what their strategy is going into tomorrow's deadline if they have one at all. I think if you're a team like a Capstrak team, like most of the teams who are at the tops of their divisions, you call the Chicago Blackhawks and go, hey, can I throw in some picks and you take some salary and we double retain on somebody? I think that's the factor they're going to play.

As for the Nashville Predators, lightning in a bottle right now. They didn't go see U2, and now they're just absolutely crushing it. Amazing, right? So if you're the Nashville Predators, why change too much? I don't see them doing a whole lot more than this, but watch. They'll go make some crazy move, and I'll have to eat my words. I think what they have is pretty good. Unless there's some sort of otherworldly elite talent available on the level of like

Philip Forsberg and Roman Yossi, I think that they kind of keep it the same. And that might be a good thing. I don't think people are taking them seriously. As seriously as perhaps they should. Especially with teams like Edmonton and Vegas and Colorado and Dallas to look out for. They could surprise.

This could be a second or a third round team. You just don't know. It's the playoffs. So, interesting pickup for the Nashville Predators. Anthony Bevilier. Hopefully he finds a little bit more life and a little bit more ice time in Nashville. We'll see how it goes.
