the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake
hello listeners of the steve dangle podcast you are currently listening to the steve dangle
podcast the second oh adam wild here sorry and the second set of videos hello there's steve
The second set of videos from Friday, trade deadline, actual day.
So enjoy these videos.
And just before we get to them, Adam Wild wants you to know that they are brought to you by...
Bio-Optimizer!
No, Sleep Breakthrough by Bio-Optimizers.
I'm sorry, Jesse.
Why don't you get it right?
You know, maybe if you'd had a little more sleep, Jesse Blake, you'd be okay.
We can all use that right now.
Yeah, but you didn't.
You didn't get good sleep.
You know why?
Because you didn't try this soon enough.
It's sleep breakthrough.
It's an all-natural formula, and you will break through to REM.
That's all we want.
We just want some REM.
Just a little bit of REM in your life.
That's right.
And here's the thing about this is this is the thing that gets you to the melatonin.
You're at home crushing melatonin tablets that taste vaguely like chalky chocolate.
You know, you guys have had those before, right?
Yep.
It's like, oh, it's the chocolate-favored melatonin.
And you're like spitting dust out afterwards.
Yeah, what if you didn't have to do that?
What if your body could do the melatonin thing on its own, Steven?
Well, how would I do that, though?
You haven't given me any information.
You would try sleep breakthrough.
You do not get addicted to sleep breakthrough.
You do not have dependency on sleep breakthrough because it's a natural formula.
And that's what's so great about it.
And it avoids, like, the sleep hangover thing because that just makes you feel like, hey, why did I go to sleep in the first place?
I'm still as tired as I was before.
I highly recommend giving sleep breakthrough a try.
It is truly a game changer.

now let's get into jake gensel's wake up wake up wake up jake gensel is now a carolina hurricane
oh are we talking about the cruz lucius trade cruz lucius what do you mean by that we got to
talk about cruz lucius the pittsburgh penguins needed to stock that cupboard with with quality
quantity and one of the best damn names in hockey and cruz lucius that's right that's right
Uh, uh, so Michael Bunting, uh, who's got term left on his deal of a silly, uh, Ponamarev, Ponamarev, Ponamarev, Cruz Lucius and Vili Kovinen, uh, who is not expected to make the NHL.
Uh, he's got a bit of a, what, like immediately?
No, from what I read today, uh, that of all the picks, that's the one of all the prospects that are going to Pittsburgh.
That's the one that is like least likely to even play North American hockey.
He might go to the, you know, I, I looked into it like, so Cruz Lucius, whose name I'm
going to say as many times as possible was a, uh, 2022 second or sorry, fourth rounder
doing very well.
If I'm not mistaken, uh, they lead their, I believe college team in scoring Vili, uh,
Koivunen, uh, 2021 second rounder leads his team in Finland and scoring tied for the team
lead and uh vasily which i'm just noticing now my phone auto-corrected to vastly uh panamarev
is a 2020 second rounder who looks good in the ahl and i think he had a two-game cup of coffee
with the hurricanes one goal one assist for two points it's not bad based simply on where they
were drafted kubanin was the highest pick out of all three of them like he was uh 51st overall and
the next one is 53 and the other one's a fifth round pick so highest upside i guess if you just
want to go by draft well and and you can stomach that by getting a first round pick
but that's just not that is almost 99 literally what happened now i haven't said what the rest
of the terms and conditions are let me get to that first obviously the conditions on the 2024
second pick and the 2024 fifth round pick that are going to pittsburgh are as follows uh the first
the second round pick will become a first round pick if carolina makes it to the stanley cup final
which would make it pick 31 or 32 i believe yes um yeah it's and then the cup final or win the
stanley cup and yes yes same thing but they make the stanley cup final same thing yeah yeah it's
stanley cup finals not win the stanley cup okay yeah yeah no it's a difference of a pick basically
if they're one of the last two remaining teams is the is the got it they don't they don't have
to win the stanley cup yeah no got it the penguins will receive the fifth round pick if carolina wins
the stanley cup ah so so that pick is the win the cup pick uh now if you are if we're talking about
upgrading a pick from pick i don't know carolina where they're going to finish in the standings
probably puts that picket that second round picket pick what 40 something 50 something uh well i mean
oh boy like so you're talking about if they bow out before the stand like that's right
um i would imagine high 50s yeah yeah and then you upgrade it to pick 32 is there a huge difference
when you're drafting pick 30 to pick 50 in aggregate games played in the nhl not really
now that's why dubas likes he likes to i would say if they went if they go to the finals dubas
is trading that pick down and getting two picks in the next oh no oh adam you know that's oh you
know what's gonna be the most obnoxious thing when no matter what that pick is he trades back anyway
yes oh no you know that's what i didn't even think of that oh my god that's gonna be infuriating now
let me ask you guys this yeah what do we know about kyle dubas well i mean he's he's uh he's
pretty tall uh-huh um man it has a haircut you can wind a watch too yeah jesse any thoughts on
that guy oh oh there's one hold on before jesse gets hold on no no no jesse what do you know
jesse make him wait i'm making him wait go for it jesse let's uh just say the thing and then we can
get to the analysis of the trade all right well it's early in the day okay might as well warm up
the pipes uh early kyle dubas loves his guys loves them who do you love most in the entire world
you don't love them as much as kyle dubas loves his guys and michael bunting is one of his guys
oh sue greyhound michael bunting is he a sue greyhound former toronto maple leaf on a really
good deal for two years where you know he he got 63 points his first year i forgot about that he
got 49 the next year and the leafs wanted to re-sign him but apparently went to the core and
the core said nah that's okay we'll let him go and so he's gone to carolina he scored at around
the same pace a little below what he's been doing the previous years but remember he was playing
with matthews and martyr here's the difference though the last two years he was a plus 27 and
plus 21 in carolina minus 15 wow big bit of a difference that feels difficult to do imperfect
stat clearly yes but that is a big a big change um can i can i tell an embarrassing story please
so uh i signed a copy of my book uh months ago i think it was around the beginning of the season
for a family member of michael bunting um they they they're a friend of a friend of a friend
and i didn't know what to write to customize it go leaves go sounded very uh inappropriate
on account of they just had let him walk so knowing that he was with the hurricanes now i wrote
all hail rod the bod and his mighty squad and then bunting got traded 60 games later that's great
that's great now what what i think is interesting is obviously the pittsburgh reaction to the
Gensel trade has not been great. People are not thrilled. And I think because, and I think the
same was for the Tanev trade in Calgary, the market has been pretty soft this year. You haven't seen
tons of first rounders move. I think you saw one for Sean Walker, but really it's not been
the first round of Palooza that sometimes it can be. And I think that's because A,
Gensel doesn't have term and B, they can get away with not trading a first form.
So I think the expectation was set too high.
I do think there's pretty significant value in Michael Bunting coming to this team.
And the reason I think that is because of a guy named Chris Kunitz.
And I'm not saying Michael Bunting is Olympian Chris Kunitz.
Yes, noted gold medalist Chris Kunitz.
But if, guys, we've seen Michael Bunting play really well next to elite talent,
offensive-minded elite talent, he does pretty well.
next to Crosby could could he have a new guy riding shotgun for the next couple of years at
four and a half million bucks you know it's it says something about Crosby's legacy that
absolutely every winger that team has ever acquired since 2005 we're like well is this
guy about to get a little bump in production and how about Michael Bunting like he he was
Austin Matthews left winger and now he's going to be well he might be we don't know uh but he
very likely will be sydney crosby or of guinea malkin's left winger and i kind of hope he's
with malkin instead of crosby because they can be crazy together they can just be absolutely
unhinged together with michael bunting the leafs were wrong to rein him in let him be nuts let him
be absolutely nuts and put him with the nhl's reigning prime minister of nuts uh underratedly
violent and aggressive red mist king uh evgeny malkin i want to see it the thing with bunting
though um like i don't know how much acquiring michael bunting matters to pittsburgh penguins
fans um i'm not saying he's gonna do a bad job i think they'll like this player um but
they traded jake ensel right in a seller's deal they lost six nothing the night they traded jake
ensel they're selling and they didn't get a clear-cut first round pick what do you care about
this like second line you know what do you care about this player what's the direction of the
Pittsburgh Penguins like after trading Jake Gensel you would think that we have a clear defined
this is the path forward and I just don't know that you get that Jesse do you think we could
pull that Sidney Crosby clip up sure because I think do that I think you make a really good
point now this is a little bit unfair this one's a little unfair because Sidney Crosby had just
just like they had just got you know watches his buddy leave and then they get absolutely
wrecked by the Washington Capitals hockey players hate post-game interviews and they hate it even
more for a big loss here's what Sid had to say when a reporter asked about the message sent
once Genzel was traded go ahead not gonna be anymore what are your thoughts I mean he's a
great player great teammate um you know a friend I think uh did everything he possibly could you
know in his time here um you know just uh privileged to play with him for for the course
of that time and uh you know some great memories and uh yeah it was it was just a privilege that's
all i can say what are you thinking about the rest of this season i mean i know you're trying
to get into the playoffs to win every game also management sounds disgusting yeah i don't know i
I mean, it's probably a better question for them.
So did any of that distraction from your play
into what happened tonight?
I don't know.
I don't know, honestly.
Is this compared to anything you've been through before here?
Yeah, okay.
I wouldn't, no, I wouldn't say it is.
Yeah, it's a new experience for sure.
Still pretty confident this thing can be turned around quickly?
I hope.
I mean, that would be great.
Obviously, you know, tonight's not going to be the kind of game
that's going to do that.
But, yeah, I hope so.
Is there an emotional component to this?
From Saturday night to Sunday to, you know,
playing a little sloppy on Tuesday to Jake's, you know,
the status of Jake.
Is this sort of way on a group?
I think the trade deadline time is always tough,
but i think given the circumstances yeah i would say that's a little heavier thanks so man that's
a guy who's been here a while eh like he handled that about as well as he could and and you can
hear there's some pain in his voice but guys i want to run this by a cap friendly had this out
uh uh last night after the trade at well actually it was this morning at exactly midnight trading
genso reduces the pens ltir relief by six million dollars they are currently short 2.275 million to
be cap compliant what therefore additional moves need to be made before 5 p.m today so we will see
penguins moves today options include trades to decrease the cap can they ltir a player maybe
brian rust uh only if he's expected to be injured long enough or reassignments but they've got to do
it i don't know that they can go forward without having some sort of um decision on yeah and that's
not too complicated of a situation because brian rust is already on ir and they could just probably
You just shift him.
So it's not like they fucked up the cap, you know?
Well, we got to call Brandon Pridham to get back to Dubas and tell him how to work this.
That's right.
I think they did that long ago.
So Jake Hensel didn't play for the Carolina angle.
Yeah.
Oh, no, we got to hit that part.
Yeah.
Jake Hensel did not play in the playoffs last year.
He was injured the previous year, 2022, when he was in the playoffs.
He played seven games.
Would anyone like to take a guess at how many goals he had?
No idea.
Eight.
Nice.
Wow.
Dude, eight goals in seven playoff games,
and they somehow didn't win that series.
He's got 34 goals and 24 assists in 58 career playoff games.
That's 58 points, so he's exactly a point a game.
In terms of goals, in the Stanley Cup playoffs,
over his career, he scores at a 48-goal pace
if the Stanley Cup playoffs were a regular season.
That's amazing.
dude he's cracked like he's really really good at this whole goal scoring thing good pickup for the
hurricanes i think he matches them well uh some defensive deficiencies but i i think carolina
has the depth that they should be able to cover that up a little bit jesse if you're carolina
and you've had the goaltending issues you've had this year does bringing in more offense make a
better defense yeah the goaltending is gonna be fine um freddie anderson's like coming back uh
he had that blood clot issue since november i think and then now he's back on the ice skating
so i think they'll be they'll be fine in terms of goaltending because they have three goaltenders
and as long as you just have strength and numbers with goalies these days it seems like you can
figure it out and you can win enough games and carolina is such a good team like we forget they
were in the conference finals last year even though they got smoked by florida they still
made it yeah it's still impressive little playoff run it's not how you want it to end but they were
in some of the uh a lot of those games so i think carolina will be perfectly fine in this situation
uh rod brindamore famously had that press conference where he talked about it being a
a close series or tight series i don't remember what his exact words were even though it was a
sweep and you know we lamented that sheldon keith would have got roasted for saying the same thing
in fairness like he wasn't wrong no he wasn't wrong it was a close
sweep but like it was a sweep but it was close some losses look better than others i also i want
to do one last thing and point this out for Carolina
Hurricanes fans. What Gensel brings, obviously
he's only played 50 games this year because he has been injured
of late. 52 points.
There is only one player
on the Carolina Hurricanes roster who has more
points than games played, and that is Sebastian
Aho. Seth Jarvis
could have been a Leafs pick. Seth Jarvis,
Marty Nietzsche, and Tebow
Taravainen all have 48, 44, and
41. Svechnikov
has only played 41 games. He has 39
points. Having these guys
on you know have a little bit of that pressure taken off them i think is going to be a huge point
too yeah well you know for them to make this ad while not really trading off their roster or at
very least unaffected from last playoff obviously bunting was on their roster he was a significant
part of it but um i mean the carolina hurricanes didn't sacrifice i think one ounce of their
identity in this deal it's a great deal for the hurricanes there's questions about the pittsburgh
one but we'll see what might or what kyle dubas can do for the rest of the trade deadline i think
we'll be getting the pens recap video probably at the end of the day so anthony declare tampa bay
lightning if you're looking just at his player stats last year uh he was almost a point of game
for the the panthers run yes and uh this year you know how i always say ducks stats don't count
yeah let's add the sharks to that okay if you're just looking at california teams only the la kings
stats count because they're uh like a team and the sharks and the ducks have struggled
so mightily so i i i look at duclair and uh he's been able to put up 16 goals so far this season
on a team that can't score uh he's a minus 15 which is bad but if you go and look at his teammates
they're all like minus 20 or worse so uh relative to his team he has done well and i mean we know
what he is and what he is is the type of player who wouldn't exactly succeed on a rebuilding team
he's a hired gun he's he's a dude who can score he can score if you surround him with talent and
rebuilding teams are usually a little thin on that the tampa bay lightning are not um they have some
of the best playmakers some of the best goal scorers in the game and it's actually kind of a
deal out of necessity to like even get them in the playoffs can i can i tell you what their forwards
look like right now sure uh from daily face off steven stamkos braden point nikita kucherov
fantastic ridiculous steve what are you talking about second line brandon hagel anthony sorelli
mitchell chaffee cool cool love him mikey aismont nick paul connor sherry tyler mott luke glenn
denning maxwell crozier there are spots for this guy uh i think anthony duclair uh ought to help
out the tampa bay lightning and he gives them another sneaky weapon on the powerpoint i said
almost point a game i meant half a point a game by the way okay last year i know i was like hot
i know i looked i looked at it i was like wait a second why did i think i turned an 11 into a 17
but jesse no they played uh 20 playoff games yeah he had 11 points yes but sometimes you don't want
to look like you you don't know what you're talking about so when you said that i was like
yeah no i own it so jesse go ahead what were you gonna say oh i was gonna say that like we're
talking about the lightning here and they definitely need help and john cooper was very
disappointed with their performance on thursday night there and as he should be because if you
take a look at the standings if the new york islanders simply win the two games they have in
hand the tampa bay lightning will miss the playoffs and that's currently where they sit so
by points percentage they're out of the playoffs which is not a place that tampa is familiar with
and i think it's a real dangerous spot because i don't think the new york islanders are that bad
you know they struggle the uh to score goals uh often like that's been their ethos but they play
great team defense they have a world-class goaltender and it's going to be a challenge
for the lightning to get into the playoffs here it's not going to be easy if you don't love
duclair as a playoff player like this is a team still fighting to get there like they need to
win regular season games here and i said minus 15 it's actually minus 12 i also want to throw
out there that um this is a player that's two years removed from a 31 goal season with uh the
florida panthers clearly he likes the state but beyond that uh i think it's important that certain
players uh come in and they are i don't want to call it like they're they're good on bad teams
and then they come to good teams and they're not as good anymore do you know what i'm saying yes
and anthony declare is the kind of guy who can move up and down the lineup and sort of always
produces and that's where i think it's really it's sort of you know when florida was at their
very very best their crazy year a couple of years ago anthony declare was playing paying
fifth playing 15 minutes a night right last year he had some injuries when everyone played 20 games
but this year again back up to 15 16 minutes a night that's his sweet spot and if you have a
winger that goes down he seems like the kind of guy that you're not too concerned about throwing
in your top six for three or four games in the playoffs no not at all not at all um i think a
good coach and john cooper is one uh should be able to use a player like this to the best of
his abilities again like you know there's some defensive deficiencies there but if the puck goes
across to him on the right and he's cocked for the one timer it's going in i've got a great shot
i have a question for you guys okay would you do if you were to if you could only pick one of the
two trades that i'm about to give you okay okay i'm gonna i'm gonna give you and you and you
haven't seen this player play for the lightning so it's a difficult trade would you redo the
tanner's a no deal or would you take the anthony duclair deal oh good lord i would do the i would
do the anthony duclair deal 20 times out of five okay that's what i would thoughts the
taser no deal was always such a ridiculous price to pay for for him and it was we're always kind
of waiting for it to pay off like the um brandon hagel deal is like oh my gosh they paid so much
for brandon hagel and that's that's what we thought and then it turns out that was exactly
what they needed to do and brandon hagel is the perfect player for the lightning and everything
who's so uh efficient during the leafs series and then tanner janeau was supposed to be the
exact same thing you know you pay every single draft pick you have for tanner janeau and it
just never worked out that it's been worth that it's such a bizarre deal and i tried to talk
myself into it sort of making sense because they did the hagel one i was like you got to trust the
you got to trust the process they're gonna figure it out what's incredible and like i don't know if
nashville predators fans watching this will agree but like i i i think tanner janeau and the type of
player yakov trennan is for example i mean they have similar jobs depth guys who are kind of big
and bang and crash and you know ideally contribute the occasional goal nashville got a third for that
guy this year so uh the price has uh plummeted on depth forwards yeah it's like i'm there's still
time i guess for it to be worth it like daniel's got a lot of time left in his career but just
looking at that i think julian breezewell wants that back what do we know about jack thompson
going the other way do we know much uh is this one of those things where the sharks are getting
uh an ahl player who's on an ahl deal and they're getting the third sorry yeah the sharks are
getting ahl player ahl deal and they get a third round pick and that's really what the concern is
what that what they really want uh i mean i struggle to get excited about any draft pick
tampa bay doesn't want okay i mean this is the player who was a third round pick he has 32 points
in 46 games uh as a defenseman in the ahl yeah right yes i mean that doesn't points in the ahl
are such a weird thing it's very difficult to judge a player by that but um he's second on
the syracuse crunch and scoring as a is he a rookie defenseman he's okay he's a sophomore
defenseman uh in the AHL that's that is pretty good so it's it's more than uh just a uh a draft
pick um obviously that the San Jose Sharks are getting um you know I just I just said that the
price plummeted um this this is the sort of deal that does have a chance to really bite the
lightning I remember when the Leafs were really bad they got players that they would just try
It's like, let's throw him in the game and see what happens.
Yeah, I don't know.
You know, what was the, after the, there was a few players that they kind of, like, and Byron Frazes had a great career, but he was one of those guys, right?
Oh, yeah.
It's like, oh, we don't know what he is, so let's put him in.
What's Brandon Kozen?
Let's put him in.
It feels like Jax Thompson could be that guy for the San Jose Sharks.
Defenseman, 21, could still break, and maybe he's a 6'7 depth guy one day.
And also, he is a Whitby Fury alumni.
no in a native of curtis ontario he was on the uh the world juniors team i'm pretty sure
yeah he was eligible no doesn't matter we're talking about the relationship to to clarington
durham i feel like jack's a bit of an unknown because he's one of those picks that happened
during 2020 so that that weird 2020 draft and then his development's been screwed up you know
because the first two years when you're you get signed by a pro team and you're you're going
through all those years it's covid and you can't play in in many of the leagues you know they didn't
have games and then uh you come out of that and nobody really knows what you are because you
didn't play hockey you played hockey on and off for two years and then now he's finally probably
just getting back to the swing of things so you always got to be kind of just give patience with
these draft picks that happened during the 2020 draft yeah yeah you know it's a great thing to
have on the farm magic beans yeah and that's that's uh what the sharks need more san jose is like
It's going to be a long rebuild.
Like, I look at that and I say, where's your Conor Bedard?
Like, who are you looking at to save your franchise?
Not according to this shark's truth.
We're going to get Max Celebrini, and the truth will shine through.
All right, gentlemen, we are going to move around through time.
All right?
We're going to move.
You know what?
We're going to go Tarantino.
we're going to start from the beginning and move back okay yep and then we're going to come back
to today that's how tarantino does it when here's the start and it's years ago sorry the first thing
that came to mind i was like we're gonna have a strange amount of feet yeah anyway
all right so the way let's go the way this is going to work is that every trade has a certain
amount of points available okay because that's how many assets were moved in the trade got it
so you oh yeah yeah so you guys together are going to have to find as many and i will give
you the points total beforehand so you know what you're shooting for geez okay and we're going to
start with something relatively recently march 20th 2022 the trade deadline was a bit later
because of the covid year now this particular trade has five total points available in march
2022 so that means there's five pieces in the trade correct okay okay in march 2022 the toronto
maple leafs bolstered their depth in this deal with the seattle kraken
wait which year this march 2022 oh okay um this was uh the leafs got
mark giordano the captain yeah they traded two second round picks nice in the deal
not jared mccann not jared mccann what so there's three points no you got a name no no no no no no
what what what you gotta give me the years of the picks oh you want the years of the draft fix it
was uh one the next season so a 2023 second that is correct because that's that's the one they're
missing uh from last year yeah in the geo deal i guess i'll say a 2022 second that is correct
And then one from that current year.
Now, you guys have a total of three of five points.
So then we need the pieces going.
That's what Toronto sent.
And then we got Gio coming back to Toronto.
So there are two more assets missing.
Yeah.
Why do I feel...
I feel like there's a forward involved.
And why do I...
Where did they get Colin?
When was Colin Blackwell a Leaf?
Why do I...
Didn't he come from the Sharks?
Didn't he play for the Sharks?
No, he didn't.
He didn't...
Was Colin Blackwell...
Adam, was Colin Blackwell ever a Shark?
I'm looking that up right now.
Because he's been around.
He was a really...
He was never a Shark.
Never a Shark.
Okay.
Then maybe.
Maybe we got this.
Maybe it's in the Seattle...
No, he was in the Bruins series.
So I don't know.
No, yeah.
That doesn't make sense, though.
He was in the Bruins series.
Oh, man.
This is so tough.
Another pick.
There is another pick, and there is another player.
A fifth-round pick.
No.
Damn it.
And I'll give you guys a hint on this one,
because it does sort of affect this year.
It does sort of affect.
A little bit.
A 2024 7th?
you got the year right oh sixth no all right you know we only get three points yeah what is
yeah what's the like rules on our guess well i i just want i think we're done here are you guys
done i thought you'd go then i could just say third second okay so you're like what are what
are the rules here so so i guess the rules were i just wanted to see how much you guys worked
through it and i do want to say you were correct on colin blackwell and the reason that you thought
Colin Blackwell played, I think, for the San Jose Sharks
is because their colors are the same as the Kraken.
But Colin Blackwell and Mark Giordano for a 2022 second rounder.
You guys got it.
2023 second rounder.
You guys got it.
2024 third rounder.
Third round.
Wow.
Oh, wow.
Really?
I'm not sure whose third round it was, but yes.
That's actually more than I remember.
I'm so mad about Blackwell.
I was so sure.
Okay.
Now let's do another one.
All right.
This one's a little simpler, and I think you guys will nail this one.
Okay.
Okay.
this is four total points four total points january 28th 2019
toronto made a splash in this trade with the los angeles kings uh the leafs acquired jake muzzin
in exchange for carl grunstrom that's two points sean dersey three points
and a first round pick that turned into tobias bjorn foot in what year
21 was it two years down the line no tobias bjorn when was he drafted i'm gonna say 2020
2019 oh shit three or four i should have as the words were coming out of my mouth i was like wait
he was waived this year shit he was like like six hours ago was he was yeah he's been waived a
by the golden knight so guys not bad not bad for your first star okay now we're gonna do man
getting the year is hard do you want to do another short one yeah yeah okay i want to do because we
got i want to do whatever you put in front of me okay i'm gonna give you one for two points and
we're gonna split these up okay because we're gonna have three videos of this because there's
so many okay in february 2018 columbus and toronto made this one for one swap this trade
sorry february 2015 columbus and toronto made this one for one swap 15 february 2015
now i think the leafs would have been selling to columbus
that that would make a lot more sense because i think they were well columbus was at very least
decent and the leafs were we know for sure were ass um so that was the peter horacek year what
what was the date february 26 2015 february 26 2015 who did the lead i remember this day well
to the columbus blue jackets i wish i could ask position i'm not gonna you can't ask position no
that's too much and it's a one for one at least don't do a lot of one for ones
can i ask if it's player for player yes and it is
what is he no no i oh man on the leafs no okay is the player that the leafs
got from columbus kirby reichel i you know i can't answer that you're gonna have to lock your
like you can't just run that by me lock in lock in kirby reichel you're locking in kirby reichel
then who went the other way reichel to the blue jackets okay kirby reichel to the blue jackets
jesse do you feel confident in that answer sure i don't have a good guess so okay now i'll tell you
I'll tell you a story before I give you guys
the answer, if you're ready. I'm going to beat you up.
Do you have a return for Kirby Reichel
so you can at least get one out of two? Do you have anything?
What do you mean so I can at least get one out of two?
Oh, shit. Because you're leaving
a point on the table by not guessing.
Kirby Reichel.
And I'm not even saying it is Kirby Reichel. I'm just
saying if you don't guess, that's an automatic
zero. It's like your math teacher.
Don't leave the answer blank. At least try to get
one.
okay i'm gonna say the leafs acquired kirby reichel and traded scott harrington okay
i remember this day well because i was sitting in the studios at kiss 92.5 doing my afternoon show
and producer jesse blake jumped into the studio burst into the studio like a comet no oh damn it
Oh, it's too late.
Shit!
They'll leave straight at David Clarkson!
Oh, my God.
I said, no, they didn't.
He said, they did.
They did it.
And it was Nathan Horton coming back the other way.
That's a zero for two, gentlemen.
And this guy said, Kirby Reichel.

So the full deal is this.
Evgeny Kuznetsov, who was waived earlier this week,
is being traded to Carolina Hurricanes for a 2025 third round pick.
Washington will retain 50% on Kuznetsov deal.
uh 7.8 million uh cut in half is 3.9 million so the carolina hurricanes get kuznetsov for the end
of this year and next year at 3.9 million bucks seems like a really good price to pay for a guy
that a needed to change their scenery and b can help alleviate some of that scoring pressure that
we've seen on the carolina hurricanes along with jay cancel honestly i love that deal for all
involved i really do uh he was making 7.8 million dollars well he still is actually he gets paid in
full uh but he was 7.8 million dollars against the cap for the capitals even if they send him
to the minors that's a relief of like i don't know the 0.8 maybe a little it's it's a little
bit more than that it's in the neighborhood of a million dollars um do they pay him 3.9 million
to play for a divisional rival all of next year yes the other option was have him play for the
hershey bears for 7.8 million dollars he did travel to charlotte by the way he was ready to
play tonight oh yeah oh dude i believe it i believe and charlotte ironically uh where the
hurricanes farm team either plays or played it's difficult to keep track of because in the ahl they
move all the time the hurricanes don't have a farm team this year well then that's even worse
that's right yeah isn't that wild um yes they used to have the checkers anyway um i so i i love it
from washington's perspective a lot of people are going to say that's a steep price to pay
um the other option was worse carolina on the other hand so we we know the struggles this
player has had he's been in the assistance program if if you just look at on ice and what they're
paying for so this year six goals 17 points in 43 games that's not good enough and he would tell
you that um it's bad it's bad but given what we know he's been going through it's a little bit
more understandable last year in 81 games 12 goals 43 assists so he's a playmaker 55 points
is that a 7.8 million dollar player absolutely not is that a 3.9 million dollar player yes for sure
first now he was an abysmal minus 26 that's pretty bad but that's the capitals and they
weren't great yes and then the previous year he had 24 goals 78 points like this is gonna be a
road back like i don't know if he immediately heads to the hurricanes and completely lights it
up but this is a worthwhile bet for the hurricanes to take jesse when you look at uh uh what um
washington gets here okay the fact that they got anything at all does that surprise you
given that this player was waived i i honestly thought that uh kuznetsov would just have to
sit in the minors and then maybe next after a full off season you bring him back up and you
try and you see what you got for seven million dollars and they would just have to eat the money
i didn't think that somebody would take him but knowing now that it's 50 retained it makes a lot
more sense you know and there's a path back for a three million dollar player you can put him into
your lineup for that price your options were 7.8 million dollars for nothing or 3.9 million dollars
for a third i have they took the obvious choice i have some stats for you and again this is it
feels weird to say the washington state the washington uh stanley cup was so long ago but
it was man it was uh but i want i have some stats in the 24 games that the washington capitals
played on the road of the stanley cup this is a player that had 12 goals and 20 assists he was
unbelievable and maybe the most iconic goal of the run um with uh with uh the overtime winner
the series winner against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
What do you say about experience and especially on the offensive side
of the puck, generation of opportunities?
And what I mean by that is Carolina, especially in the Florida series,
kind of got hemmed in by the lack of offensive opportunities
they were given, right?
They just couldn't score enough.
They did have some injuries going into last year's playoffs too,
which I think people forget that really severely hampered them.
But I think what's interesting about a guy like Kuznetsov is that he has the brain and the intelligence and the experience to do things that Carolina couldn't necessarily do before, which is constantly generate opportunities when they're out there.
If he gives you five or six more opportunities a game, even if he gives you three more opportunities a game, that's three more chances to bury it.
And this is a playmaker.
You ever seen Rod the Bod without a shirt?
i i don't think i have actually i just you haven't seen rod the bod playing frisbee at
bemo field oh yes yes during the who hasn't seen that hmm you know that slow-mo video it's slow
he's gonna be uh he's gonna be shirtless a lot more often now because because he's he's gonna
be on his surfboard because he's gonna send the hurricanes at you in waves dude do you like that
jesse by the aho it took a while to get there but i got there no go ahead i got there uh aho
svechnikov tara vinen natchez jordan stall jesper fast and seth jarvis is in there too
stephen nason extremely underrated and they haven't even added jake gensel to the cap friendly
list there so you add gensel and cockney emmy um for the price of what who's nets off not
sorry my bad they have cockney but the it's two k names they have uh gensel and kuznetsov added
at bargain bin prices this is an enormous win for the hurricanes i really like it for them
if you're if you're a hurricanes fan you watch a bunch of hurricanes game this year one thing you
constantly yell at your tv is jack jury is your second line center like that was it was a ridiculous
way to go about a team that has stanley cup aspirations and rod brindermore last week spoke
about how he was happy with their group there and hurricanes fans yelled back at him but jack jury
is our second line center what the fuck are you doing and i think if kuznetsov can just regain
some of that form and he's happy playing center right there there's your second line center and
you have uh jordan stall and injury and caught can get me to fill out the uh other of the four
other two center spots and you have a solidified lineup there if kuznetsov is is back to his old
for not uh not the greatest face-off winner but it might not matter with team defense like the
Carolina Hurricanes have what's going to be really big for Carolina is two o'clock um Brendan Lemieux
is on waivers today I think there's a greater than zero percent chance someone takes him
because he's a jerk and this is the time of year where jerks come at a premium
and uh Tony D'Angelo who's only I think he's a hair under 1.7 million um I think there's a chance
gets claimed as well um so there could be some relief there for this team so a a very surprising
move and really great back great value back for a player that needed to change and a team that
needs a new direction in the washington capitals third round pick washington evgeny kuznetsov
carolina go into the playoffs i bet 24 hours ago he could never imagine this
i don't want to play anymore now these are it's great because these are going to get progressively
harder throughout the day oh no now one thing i am going to make easier on you guys the reason
the first time we did this and you should check out the first video is i made you remember the
draft pick years yeah that was ridiculous which is ridiculous but the reason i did that is because
the trades were relatively recent got it as we reach further into the past the mists of time
uh can kind of cloud your memory so i'm not going to make you do that but these trades are harder
and remember the rules okay every asset is worth a point and i will give you the year that it
happened the date that it happened and how many points are on the board how many points do we
have right now you have out of a total of 11 points you have six hey that's a passing grade
passing grades not bad now again i said this is so this is the medium round d for degree okay let's
get at it all right so so here we go on february 18th 2011 boston and toronto finalized this deal
after some initial confusion there are four points on the board for this deal yes now do you remember
i don't remember the initial confusion the initial confusion is boston thought they were getting a
first round pick in this deal um because as the legend goes uh i believe pete shirelli and brian
burke were at a bar and figured out this trade at a bar um and as a result there was some confusion
as to what draft pick was going where okay what the boston bruins received in return
was tomas caberly that's one point they got thomas caberly the leafs received a prospect
in joel uh colburn two points they the leafs received i believe oh
oh was it a no it wasn't another prospect i want to say it was a first round pick
and a second round pick four points gentlemen let's go i think one of the picks was conditional
but i'm not it was the second rounder was there it is wow there should be bonus points for that
was great now i want to ask you this what when you when you look at this deal thomas cabriolet
was towards the end of his career and did play somewhat of a role with boston uh in the finals
but he wasn't like he did win his cup but he wasn't he didn't he wasn't great there one of my
favorite bits of trivia every single member of the Bruins roster played at least 10 minutes in
game seven of the 2011 Stanley Cup final except Thomas Cabral okay so but here's my question why
would Boston get a first rounder I exactly right exactly that's definitely a screw-up on Shirely's
end what I would I imagine Brian Burke screamed into the phone the next day I'm giving you Thomas
cabaret are you stupid it was cool to see the reunion uh thursday night against the leafs yeah
was it cool jesse it was cool you liked it having brad marchand throw on the 2011 jersey and then
when he was in pregame skate he had thrown back on today's jersey it was fun and then throw a
shoulder directly into the brain of a first liner good stuff um okay so we're gonna go to january
31st 2010
the Leafs and Ducks
made this trade
the Leafs and Ducks have traded a lot over
the years
how many points three points on the board
I got it
the Leafs
acquired JS Jaguar
one point
and they traded
Jason Blake
and Vesa Toskala
that's three points on yes
yes now let me let's put a little context to this uh Vesa Toskala who was brought in to be
the goaltending savior after goaltending savior Andrew Raycroft didn't work out yes
uh when their goaltending savior who should have stuck around Vesa Toskala played for Boston
he was not really the marquee part of this deal Jason Blake who a former 40 goal scorer who had
done well with the Leafs uh but the Leafs were just bad that seems to be the that was the major
piece here it was three bad contracts they were all players making too much money the leafs traded
two players who weren't making as much as jaguar and took on jaguar who ended up being okay for
them he almost brought them to the playoffs uh you went on a run almost doing a lot of work there
he was fine he was almost doing a lot of work there okay you know it was classic leafs signing
jason blake after his 40 goal season and then him never doing anything remotely close to that ever
again you know what if 24 i think he had 24 max after that the peak was 25 uh two years later oh
that was a tough and then 10 goals six goals 16 goals seven goals now he did battle cancer all
throughout his first year with the leafs um but i i believe if i'm not mistaken one of his first
years either his first or second year with the leafs is one of the first years they started
tracking like analytics and it actually uh the numbers smile upon him but uh part of me wonders
i know gaming corsi is not a thing but i i got to go to a few leaf games that season
a lot of shots from not very dangerous spots all right now we've got one more in the mid round and
I'm going to tell you that the last round is painfully tough.
Actually, you know what?
I'm going to give you two more.
There will only be two trades in the last round,
so I got two more trades for you this round, okay?
Okay.
All right?
So, in 2003.
Oh, my God.
The Leafs made this simple deadline deal with the Montreal Canadiens.
For a defenseman.
No.
you couldn't be faulted for that because commissary did become elite but that was free agency 2003
2003 i remember screaming in my car when this yeah this was doug gilmore that's one what did
they trade for him oh it was not much i think it was a draft pick you are correct and i think it
was a fourth close oh third sixth oh six that's not that was yeah that wasn't close all right
six is pretty close ah no i could have done worse okay there's only there's only seven options yeah
now i want to tell you it was pretty far off that's so funny yeah oh my god okay now you guys
were you guys have only got only missed one this round which is amazing steve it's with steve and
And I know the further back, it's more and more difficult
because Steve's got the memory of a, like, he's just crazy with this.
But I'm going to take you back to 1999 now.
Jesse, how old were you in 1999?
Eight.
Okay.
Steve and I were 11.
Okay.
Okay.
We've established our ages.
And this was a big, big trade.
Sorry, Steve.
In January 1999, the Leafs and Islanders made this swap.
There are four points on the board.
oh okay so i'm pretty what what what date january 1999 january 9th if you want to be specific
okay so i'm pretty sure i know what the deal is remembering all four parts is real difficult
this was probably could get a few of the parts yeah the leafs the leafs acquired brian berard
one point the leafs traded felix potband two points and thank god for that it have to shut up
um now what were the other i don't remember there being two parts of the deal brian barard was
really highly touted so i imagine the leaf sent a draft pick to the island they did uh i'm gonna
say might have even been a first no no you don't think so jess i don't think it's the first that's
a little much considering felix the cat was supposed to solidify their defense and their
goaltending sure i mean he was only six seven years into his career at that point that's when
is your first overall pick is your instinct first first round pick
let's go i'm gonna regret this let's switch to a second i'm gonna go with a first you suck
no no we're on the same team on the same team we're on the same team whatever you think
there are four pieces there are four pieces so what would how would this have gone four points
on the board first you've got you've got two and i did i did let slip that there is a draft pick
involved at least and i and i'm giving you these hints because so there's four pieces and what do
you have so far you've got two of them did the leafs get oh just barard and poppin did the
leafs get a player they got barard no other than barard no i'm gonna say the leafs gave up a second
and acquired at fifth now what's so interesting about pre-cap trades is none of them make sense
especially when it comes to picks okay so you guys only did get two out of four on this one
the leafs and islanders for some reason swapped sixth round picks that year with the trade
like i don't know i don't even know why you do that because it's like okay so the leafs finish
a little higher higher than the islands you're talking about 10 to 15 spots in the sixth round
Who cares?
I'm just surprised that sound came out of me.
Now, if Kyle Dubas was the GM,
he would have traded that pick down, by the way.
Loves this guy.
Okay, so the last one.
And this is, so this round is over,
but I just want to let you know
that round three of Leafs trade deadline pass
is going to be painful.
Excruciating.
Excruciating.
There will only be two trades,
and we will do that next.
So Jordan Eberle is staying with the Seattle Kraken.
Seattle's a great place to live,
from all accounts it's a great place to play hockey state-of-the-art arena and a team that's
had a down year but we're pretty good last year jordan eberly seems to be enjoying himself uh he
does and he's going to get to celebrate his thousandth game in the nhl there he's sitting
at 998 and uh i think seattle thinks they're uh closer to to the team they were last year than
they were to their inaugural team and if you want that you want a player like jordan eberly
ironically i think he would have been absolutely perfect for edmonton because why wasn't jordan
everly brought back to edmonton yeah well he was traded to the islanders wasn't he was well it was
a freaking horrible trade uh but he had a really really really poor playoff oh he took forever to
make the playoffs because the others were terrible forever they finally made it in 2017 two assists
in 13 games that's it here's every playoff run since nine points in eight games 14 points in 22
games 11 points in 19 games 11 points in 14 games this is a fantastic playoff performer and this
season 14 goals 37 points in 58 games he has an opportunity to have his 13th or 13th oh my god
i'm tired he has a chance for his third straight uh 20 goal season he'd be closer to five uh straight
20 goal seasons uh had covid not uh shortened uh two it's just a really good player at a really
good number two years 4.75 million per year jesse what do you think about it it's a very interesting
what could have been trade with the adventure noilers this is how i look at this right now
because somebody off the roster would have had to move as much as i i love like cory pear is playing
on the right side right now on there on the third line so is that everly spot do you move cory perry
down like is warren fogel going the other way like who off of the edmonton oilers roster are you
moving to make room for everly because even at retained they don't have enough salary cap to do
this you know they have a million dollars in space and they couldn't fit him in so what's what are
the the maybe it's a three-way deal like there's so many things that could have been going on and
edmonton the market if you just go to the blogs like everybody was on this yeah all last night
if you go to oilers nation or just the bleacher report had one like everybody was on everly
reunion to the oilers and now i'm just sitting here left like oh this didn't happen i think
where's my trade i think uh culture matters um you know uh having an identity having a player
who you can slap on the back of your jersey as a new uh fan um and feel confident about now i say
that but ironically it's a two-year deal in two years time assuming he doesn't have full trade
protection i would be shocked uh if he had full trade protection if seattle's not in a position
uh to contend at that time they can deal it says uh ntc on cap oh my how is it already on cap
friendly it's amazing those guys are mutants no way so that's the new deal apparently yeah
apparently has a ntc it's uh or modified it does we don't have the details on it yet but it's there
under the claw wow so uh we'll see how that goes it seems like you'll be a seattle kraken for the
next two years that's absolutely those guys are unreal we'll see if there's we'll see if it's a
10 team if it's 20 team you know what it is but yeah i would also say that you get into your 30s
maybe he you know i don't know much about jordan everly's personal situation but you have family
you settle down you maybe don't want to be sleeping on couches uh uh all the time and
being moved around i don't think he's sleeping but you know what i mean like it's like you you
get traded it's like oh you stay over at my house for a night and then you can get you know get if
he does it's like a deluxe warm oh i bet it's the best couch five point five million dollars a year
right now yeah but I think he's all right my point is you probably just don't want to move
and I think he's making a little bit less than he made uh the last five years but like so what
you got you've got a great team that you think this is a this year's an aberration it's not
you know you got a great future there what I wonder about with um Eberle now being off the
market and Gensel being moved is what does the market look like for a guy like Toffoli like
people like oh well everly going off the market this trade deadline's gonna suck i actually think
this ratchets up the heat a little bit price of a brick going up seems to be absolutely i think
this might be the precursor to something happening with tyler toffoli because it looks like i thought
if new jersey can get the three four year deal with toffoli you bring it back you know sure
of course but he wants six seven years it's gonna be his last contract maybe so maybe this gets the
market moving on to foley seattle's willing to walk away from a deal uh we learned that during
the expansion draft painfully so if if you're adam but they set their price for hey if you don't want
us to take this player here's the price most teams the vast majority of teams said no to their price
and seattle went all right and they simply walked away from it and picked the player that they
picked i imagine with jordan eberly they said here's our price and they didn't get it they
didn't get what they uh what they wanted maybe they also couldn't find a third party broker
and they kept them so seattle with their expansion seems to be going opposite vegas where they
like their guys still and they there's no like rush to move all of remove all of their expansion
guys like jordan eberly's gonna be an original and he's gonna stick around there so good for
them for building that culture you know just having the guys that the fans can cheer for and
keeping them around because the team's been very successful so far in their first two years and
they're going to probably miss the playoffs this year but keep the band together keep it rolling
they're going to be good devil's advocate maybe you should emulate the golden knights a little
bit more you know what all that being said vegas won the stanley cup yeah exactly exactly so jordan
everly will be a seattle kraken we think for at least a couple more years unless you know he
waves the no trade clause because that's never happened before it all here this just came across
even though he signed the extension he's been traded to vegas um so these these trades are
are doozies there are two trades on doozies sean doozies traded at the trade
redemption there will be 16 points on the board 16 points on the board for this that's
two trades two trades that's preposterous the first trade all right is february 9th 2016
in february 2016 toronto and ottawa made this massive deal 10 points on the board
so here's what's very frustrating um only a few years apart the leafs and sends made
massive deals so it's going to be difficult remembering exactly what was involved how
many points are on the board for this this deal again this isn't when they traded for their own
logo right traded for their own logo dion um i'm not gonna say 2016 traded for their own logo
okay i okay i forgot about that i forgot about that yeah he looks like he did he did look like
the senator yeah he did if you overlay his face it's pretty one-to-one that's a good point so
obviously the leafs trade dion finoff to the ottawa senators there's one uh the sends get
cody donaghy
oh
what's this by the way you have two points already i know
hey that's good there's a draft pick in there yeah the leafs get
i think the leafs got a second rounder they did get a second rounder
was it three points out of 10 uh just for my own sake was it a 2017 it was a 2017
um the leafs got i believe milan mahalik that's four points a noted alan walsh client
the leaf oh yeah was he really yeah oh cool oh that makes sense oh i bet he loved that trade
oh my gosh alan was involved in the dion for no we need to do a podcast just on alan's involvement
next agent provocateur ask him about that i will that's so much fun i will i never realized that
wow the leafs got colin greening five points nice the leafs got you're missing like a centerpiece
of this i know i know i know the leafs got um jared cowan six the leafs traded if i'm not
mistaken they traded matt fratton seven and he stayed on the marley's frat sanity um
There was a lesser known prospect.
He was a feisty little prick.
I'm trying to, oh my God.
I'll give you this.
There are two players that the Leafs traded
that you haven't gotten.
There is one player coming back to Toronto
that you haven't gotten.
And by the way, the player coming back to Toronto,
all three of us saw this player play in person.
oh yes i interviewed this player uh tobias lindbergh that's right
you remember those big toby lindbergh games jesse toby lynn we saw his nhl debut not really
we saw his nhl tobias lindbergh yeah big like hailey's comment hitting the moon yeah
two players to ottawa what hailey's comment hitting the moon um
who did the leaps
tie to Dion Phaneuf on that rocket yeah Cody Donahue I can't believe I remember him uh
Ryan Rupert yes yes okay wow nine out of ten here can he go for a perfect you got one more
oh man is it a centerpiece no no it's a prospect yes and i'm almost positive
he's got he's either european or has a european name
no you're not i'm not saying anything i'm just looking at his face didn't even change i didn't
say anything i didn't say anything oh he was a draft pick i i want to say
oh jesse do you have any shot at this oh my gosh no okay swedish there's no way swedish or finnish
oh for god's sake oh it's driving me nuts he the least picked it he was like a mid-round pick
oh by the way we all desperately want you to get this i know not sandre olden um
i i i literally know who it is i can't remember their name i i this is driving me absolutely crazy
what what kind of clue could you give me that would protect the integrity of this game
i can tell you that you're going down the wrong path am i
i think yeah you can't get hints at this point yeah like this one that's all i can
say is that you're going down the wrong path somewhere you took a wrong turn
casey bailey casey bailey
10 out of 10 wow
that's awesome still recite the deon fin of trade from memory
who the hell is the prospect i don't know i'd never heard of him maybe he was in the grabner
deal okay oh man now this one will be impossible impossible here counterpoint fuck you okay
it's from february 2000
yeah all right all right february 2000 this next deal february 2000 there are six points on the
board and i will say this these don't count but they were included future considerations
were given both ways in this trade this is again so those don't count pre yeah they they don't
count by the way it's just pre salary cap weirdo trades future considerations on both ends
ridiculous february 2000 tampa bay and toronto made an eight piece deal they made so many trades
around that time they know they did they camp in toronto yes they did this one was consequential
uh-huh uh-huh uh-huh i'm okay okay
i think the leafs no they traded the leafs traded mike johnson
in this trade one point hey the leafs acquired darcy tucker two points
the leafs i remember his years in tampa
the lee johnson's or tucker's tucker's yeah he was good yeah those were like decent years very good
acquired
Corey Cross?
Incorrect.
Oh, shit.
If you get any
of the remainder of this deal,
I'd be blown away.
Is, uh, is, uh...
Did they acquire...
No.
no okay there's a player who i'm almost positive was involved in this deal but i can't remember if
he was coming or going uh i'm gonna say the least acquired derrick king no shit
also jesse the thing on the tv stuff um mike johnson darcy tucker future considerations
well future considerations both ways uh they exchange so many damn players
uh did the leafs acquire oh did they did they acquire gerald diddick no damn okay well then
i just okay well this is as i told you if you got any more than those two i'd be shocked they
made a bunch of deals you got two out of six on that one and that's that's pretty good uh the
leafs acquired along with darcy tucker a 2004th round pick oh jesus lord they also traded
merrick posmic nope a 2005th round pick and a 2006th round oh good lord okay
so i got everyone with a bloody name yeah you did uh nuts that's a shame except for
you did get everybody with a name that's good i want validation that the leafs made a bunch of
trades with the lightning at the time they did yeah they did not not for this quiz not bad
out of a possible 16 points you ended up with 12 guys uh congratulations hey congratulations and the
fact that you got a 10 out of 10 on the dion fun of trade is amazing a little bit of help but
impressed a little round of that was that was a magical moment great work great work should
ended it there yes justin 28 out of 40 not bad 28 out of 40 didn't you say you would cry if i got

Kyle Ocpozo, the ultimate hang in there despite everything story. Literally, he is.
Yes. His career, I thought, was done years ago.
absolutely and and you know what if it had been anybody less determined it probably would have
been captain NHL captain Kyle Ocpozo well not anymore but yeah and he's going to be a Florida
Panther now so let's let's talk about this uh quickly because Kyle Ocpozo has been in Buffalo
a long long time he signed a seven-year 42 million dollar deal on the July the first of July in 2016
that is widely considered one of the worst first of July's of all time in terms of signings it was
real bad and that's not kyle's fault but all of the that entire class of free agents almost none
of them worked out in kyle's case it was a health issue uh yes uh injury issue i mean so many of
those guys ended up having to deal with that yeah um at varying points in their careers but it was
one of those things where uh you can you can you can spend your your cap space on guys who you
draft or you can make a trade or you can just go out and free agency and overspend on absolutely
everyone. And they did. And they were trying to surround Jack Eichel with with pieces. And
Kyle Ocpozo did bring leadership. Now, that contract has expired, but he had such a good
year last year in Buffalo that they brought him back for two point five million dollars this year.
Excuse me. Three million dollars this year. Wow. And he's off to the Florida Panthers. Now,
what is Kyle Ocpozo? You were right the first time. It's a two point five million dollar cap
pit oh is that what it is okay but the aav is yeah weird anyway i just want to ask you guys
what do you think he brings to this this already pretty stacked panthers team uh i think i think
matches them very well um they are they're a big um they're a really big vibes team um i i think
they have a really fun locker room and they're acquiring an nhl captain which i don't think can
be overstated um but he's also like 220 pounds which the florida panthers really like they like
beating up on guys and i think he brings a good depth goal scoring touch um he hasn't hit 30
points each uh in either of the last two seasons but 11 goals 12 goals they don't need him especially
for what they gave up for him at maximum it's a fifth um they don't need him to score the lights
out they just need them to chip in you know the occasional goal last year they were using depth
guys like zach dalpy you know kind of in in those uh situations and now they got akpozo here's here's
a fun one when was the last time he played in the stanley cup playoffs akpozo it has to be with the
new york islanders you are correct 2016 in 11 games two goals six assists for eight he didn't
play in last year's playoffs no no they didn't make it no he didn't he was on the sabers made
the playoffs for 13 straight seasons wow one thing you have here is kevin adams definitely doing right
by a guy but also just getting assets for somebody who probably isn't going to come back next year on
the sabers and garth snow um kylok pozo has been in the league so long he was drafted by garth snow
like that was wow i was just looking he's yeah he's a 2006 draft yeah he's he's been around for
a long time so you're adding some real veteran presence to the panthers uh forward group and
their forward group doesn't need help like it's already so good and they just added tarasenko
on the top end and now you just get some more depth pieces and like injuries are going to happen
so you might as well load up for essentially for free if it's a seventh and it upgrades to the
fifth if it's a if they win the stanley cup and then then there's also a fifth round pick prospect
in there yes that's cali schlan schlan s s j a l i n he's from sweden he's 24 years old he was
drafted in 2017 here's his scouting report uh smith it's pronounced uh does not tend to play
overly aggressive on either side of the ice but is a steady what are you what are you reading from
this is from uh elite prospects uh but is a steady puck mover who does not make a lot of mistakes
that's from 2017 yeah he's with the rochester americans right charlotte checkers and now
rochester americans this to me based on that return guys feels like feels like the sabers
are doing right by this guy exactly yeah and well and i it's funny which i hate did it have to be in
this division you have to do right by him in florida i know i don't love that but i mean in
a way you get to stick it to the leafs and bruins oh yeah screw with your other divisional opponents
um but you also get a divisional rival to pay you in draft capital to look good like i mean if
there's a player you're going to do right by it's this one it's your team captain um you thought you
would be further ahead in this process you thought you would be making the playoffs this year or at
very least knocking on the door and you're not so it's time to cut bait here and they don't like
the sabers don't need a poser for the next month and a half that's left of the season like what's
the point of just having this pending ufa around when you can just get a free seventh round pick
just take it i'm looking at uh the panthers bottom six on daily faceoff right now edu lutz
or ryan in with anton lundell and evan rodriguez nick cousins with kevin stendland and ryan
lomberg unless they move on from one or more of those guys in some other deal later in the day i
don't even know who akpozo kicks out that's what i was trying to get to when i when i said and they
don't really need him at all they have such a great four group he doesn't really fit in anywhere
but like i said you need bodies like it's it's an option it's just like the uh choice stetcher deal
yesterday with edmonton where he doesn't really slot in anywhere on the decor but you might as
well have bodies going into the playoffs you take off pozo get them for essentially nothing on both
sides so it's a good deal options producer drew just texted the group by the way guys this is
akpozo's 17th season in the nhl ever wow yeah that's pretty wild good for him on a team that
could win the president's trophy it's going to be a crazy crazy time and somebody who deserves
to be in the playoffs after playing for the terrible islanders for so many years
and then the terrible buffalo sabers get this man some playoff time for god's sakes
tyler toffoli to the jets to the new jersey devils a 2025 second round pick and a 2024
for third round pick for tyler to foley and what he brings that seems like a pretty good deal for
the jets uh yes absolutely i just i think of i think of a team with the scariest guns in the
league like some of these guys that can just friggin rip it kyle connor mark shifley tyler
to foley you know are they players with flaws sure um but you don't want to puck on any of their
sticks any of it because they don't need much time with it no it will burn you it seems like
you know and and you it rightfully so people are sleeping in the jets a little bit because
uh look at the absolute gargantuan scary teams that they're playing like the monsters play in
the western conference right you've got you've got dallas you've got colorado you've got edmonton
you've got uh vegas who won the cup last year if any of those teams win nobody bats an eye
everybody's like yeah i thought so i thought maybe you know yeah um winnipeg's had a great year
they have they they really have and it's almost like they got to remind everybody
um like especially in canada like uh i i think i think a lot of these teams that have kind of
been doing well all season long have hit these little lulls and it's almost like we've forgotten
and how good they've been basically all year vegas is one of them vancouver is one of them
and the the jets definitely fall into that category and like this is maybe besides the
point for winnipeg jets fans but it just feels like tyler toffoli is way too good of a player
who's had way too good of a career to be this much of a suitcase yeah yeah he's going he's been
every what is that four or five teams in the last three four years oh my god the jets the devils the
Canucks, the Flames, the Kings.
He's been everywhere.
Now, I have, sorry, Gabe Velarde is out day to day right now.
So Vlad Nemesnikov is currently playing top line right wing minutes
with Kyle Conner and Mark Scheifele.
But Jesse, you look at that top six, okay?
You got Conner, Scheifele, and probably Velarde.
And then you got Ehlers, Monaghan, Ayafalo.
Where do you put Toffoli?
Because you assume he goes in the top six.
is he pushing down a guy like namesnikov or you know mason appleton basically yeah he starts he
slots in somewhere in the top six he's too good of a player i think to play him on the third line
unless you go to the model where you're gonna load up your entire uh core just wave forward
group and just have you waves after waves after waves like there's options here for the jets and
it really opens things up one of the more interesting things i'm looking at with the deal
is you mentioned all the times tyler toffoli has been traded i'm like who got the best return and
what Montreal did when they traded him and the amount of of picks and capital they got is very
impressive and Calgary for their nice return as well Sharon Govich is great for them right now
and then for New Jersey it's so disappointing how the summer went and we reached this point
you know question Fitzgerald signs the deal and it's like okay we got we got to Foley and this
is going to be great and we're going to have their season we don't have to worry about moving him
because we're going to resign him because we're going to be so good I think they're going to be
impatient with the picks um i wouldn't be shocked at all if uh at the draft they flip them yeah i
can see them they don't want to be they don't want to be rebuilding anymore yeah and what they need
is something to build around the young guys like i don't think it's about getting assets for the
future anymore that's why it makes sense to flip these picks it's about getting some established
nhl players to play with the jack hughes jesper brat nemiches of the world where you have these
young guys and they just need veterans to support the team now i have a question for you guys and
and i want to go i want to go hindsight is 2020 on this one okay because toffoli became a new jersey
devil this summer when uh when new jersey said okay we'll we'll give you sharon govich who'd
had some good seasons before was already a 20 goal scorer before that uh is now 25 goals in
calgary one of the only players in calgary that can score would it have been better to keep a guy
like age 25 sharon govich over to foley for where the new jersey devils are at because you've got
jack hughes and luke hughes and all the other players on that team within that 20 to 25 range
coming up together uh like do you regret that trade if you're talking about what we were just
talking about you know you you that's where they were at that moment exactly what they needed was
tyler toffoli they didn't sharon govich wasn't the player they wanted who was a uh pending ufa
or rfa i forget ufa they traded his signing oh sorry rfa excuse me rfa yeah i don't i don't
remember and then they he signed the deal in calgary but toffoli was what they needed toffoli
was supposed to be a missing piece for the core where you put up a whole bunch of goals and just
support all the young guys and now that that's gone to the shitter you got to move him for assets
so he doesn't walk for nothing well when you sign with the team you're like you know you look at the
rest of the roster and you go all right who am i going to be playing with and you look and you go
nico he's sure okay oh jack hughes okay well both guys have battled injuries this season
and they've either been hurting out of the lineup or playing hurt and maybe the most devastating
one of the most devastating injuries to any roster in the league this season was dougie hamilton going
down um they did struggle they still looked like a team that was hanging around um sorry lindy
and all that um timo meyer's been on an absolute tear since lindy was let go
well like five goals in four games oh yeah i mean as a as opposed to just being complete hot garbage
yeah right like dougie hamilton going down destroyed their decor because tom fish jail
decided to have two established players on their decode leave for nothing and then
they were just completely wrecked and they can't run a power play without hamilton and
And they haven't been able to play good team defense without him.
And I think it's a lot on this management group
for the way they've built this team
and the way Lindy Ruff coached it.
He didn't know how to handle the roster.
And it's just been a lot of errors and a lot of mistakes
and a season of mistakes for the Devils.
Now, there were rumors that Toffoli really liked it in New Jersey.
He could always sign back there this summer.
I mean, really, if that's exactly what they needed last summer,
you could make the argument that he might be exactly what they need this summer.
my question to you is if you're a general manager and you know that this guy is probably money in
the bank for 30 goals over the next few years the problem is to fully is supposed to have
he wants somewhere in the neighborhood of six to eight years he's 31 now is that something
new jersey seriously looks at this summer i could see winnipeg looking at that because they want
guys they're going to stick around and play right do you think new jersey revisits this
if that's the term i think you entertain eight years for anybody as good as tyler to foley but
you need him to be realistic about cap it um like you're gonna be 40 by the end of this thing or
damn near um you know whatever you think your your cap it should be now at 31 when you're sort of you
know back end of prime uh we ain't paying you that for eight years you sign a short deal i could see
him going to free agency getting seven
ish in that neighborhood
you're not getting that for eight years
you got to be out of your mind and
not that I've even heard that he's
asked for that though I think
if the deal was there they would have signed it
yeah they were they were trying to get some sort
of deal done it seemed like him and management
were just too far apart I think they got
to go in a different direction just say
hey this didn't work and Tyler
Tyler can go get his final
contract ever you know and sign some
sort of seven eight year deal with somebody
i i still think like dude he sure hughes hamilton palat is one that i kept forgetting about yeah um
all the injuries in new jersey if i'm to fully i consider going back for yeah yeah you gotta get
you had the opportunity to stick around yeah they didn't they couldn't they didn't want to give them
seven years why not have your cake and eat it too like maybe you get to go win a cup of new uh with
the jets uh show off your ring to everyone hey look what i found and then uh sign your big deal
anyway we'll see all right we will see uh uh the win of what sorry my favorite thing about this
deal what is it anything can happen in jersey stop jason zucker going to the nashville predators
that the team you hate the most that's right that should have gone to see you too look at
how it worked out for him the coyotes are getting uh dallas's sixth round pick
now the coyotes have currently with this pick i believe 35 picks in the next couple drafts
it's like some crazy number boy it just really doesn't matter it doesn't matter but let me i
want to say something here i want to say something here yeah i want to say something here first off
they're all going to look great in salt lake city fantastic that's what i'm saying the other thing
the other thing i want to say is according to frank zaravali because there was no salary retained
nashville taking all 5.3 million that dampened the return and my question to you guys is if you're
arizona other than the real dollars that you probably have to pay what's the point it's
barry trot sitting there and saying i don't need you to retain i have 33 million dollars
i am at the same place where you are mr coyotes where you have a ton of cash space i'm gonna only
give you the sixth round pick because i don't need your attention la di da and then he and then
he went and then he didn't pay i mean they're just hoarding draft picks like i hate to do this
with the coyotes they really do their fans deserve better the market deserves better the sport
deserves better but they got all these draft picks for what for what so that they can uh be picked
and then become good nhlers and what happens to good nhlers they get traded no they get
they get they get paid they get traded by arizona once they have to pay them that's right
what on earth is the point it's funny that you saw this deal and that's what you focus on because
i'm like oh it's a good deal for them they get rid of the full salary and they get something
back who cares but like competitively like this like financially it makes perfect sense
how does this make the coyotes better now or later you get what what do they need cap space
no no they just they're a money laundering scheme it's the money it's the magic beans for the future
listen it's really important that arizona who has one first rounder three second rounders three
third rounders two fourth rounders one fifth rounder and now two six rounders and a seventh
rounder it's important to add to that to get your second sixth rounder they go back in time
and clone sydney crosby and pick them first overall does it save the team like does i actually
think it would no what they need to do is draft a player with a degree in architecture to build
them a freaking building in order for any of this to matter i don't know if that is the point of the
jason zucker trade no the point i think jason zucker trade is let's not pay this person have
them go to nashville and they can pay this person if the predators got better i understand this deal
from a predator's standpoint they have no forwards like um every time i look at the roster i go how
are you winning games um and it's because they didn't go to you too right that's how they're
winning exactly um but couldn't be that they're pretty good i understand couldn't be i understand
the predators uh side of the deal from a competitive standpoint i understand the coyotes
side of this deal from a financial standpoint and nothing else okay now uh let's talk about
jason zucker the player by the way who is spending less on their team before this deal
uh uh nashville or arizona that's right nashville was spending less money before the deal the 33
million dollars in cap space i don't know why nashville hasn't been more active like that's
one of the more curious things i think about yesterday and today is that they could have
just been taking on money and we see their one time where they're going to take on money is the
jason zucker deal um and he's got nine goals 16 assists 25 points in 51 games like yeah jesse's
got a point like why why aren't they the third team on every single deal it's just like hey you
want me to take some of your salary i can do that or well you can only do it so many times the
retention spots but like they can just take on people who are just a lot of cap and people want
relief it's not three o'clock yet jesse it's true like the the pittsburgh situation where
pittsburgh is going to make some sorts of moves to get a little under the salary cap there's
nashville sitting right there and what i think of when it comes to the nashville predators is checks
uh i fucked it up i'm so tired chess not checkers um because this is a long play
this is a long play what are you doing when they play the florida panthers in the stanley cup final
they have their nick cousins neutralizer and jason zucker he's gonna just crank him okay gonna be
great why what he's the guy who hit him from behind oh okay i did not remember that by the
way jason zucker has 15 points in 48 career playoff games he had 27 goals last year with
the pittsburgh penguins but obviously the coyotes have not had the best of years they had a good
start but just have not had yeah not been great they were sitting in a playoff spot up until like
november early december and then yeah they came back to earth i was a believer yeah i really want
like for all the criticism we've given the organization the players are good yeah man
like heading into the season i think we had them fringe playoff and just not close right now kv
kv carilva melka oh he had a minute and then we didn't really have it anymore i thought that was
the acronym for the state they're moving to but what what can i throw something at you guys
you just then you want them out of here let me throw something you guys okay listen to this
listen to this adam go this is better than i swear it's better there are two wild card teams
in the western conference as there are in the eastern conference nashville occupies wild card
one yeah who occupied wild card two right la la yeah okay lock your guesses in you have to have
you both have to get those blues vegas golden knights oh oh yeah i forgot because they've been
two seven and one over the last 10 the nashville predators have a better record than the vegas
golden knights and you know why where was you two's concert that's true absolutely jack eichel
is back but they they went a long time without jack eichel um mark stone obviously is going to
be yes with his lacerated spleen they're they're always they always have injuries but their decor
is healthy they should be a little better they got their their like lunch taken from them from
vancouver last night they sure demko was fantastic and and there's vancouver who's like we've had a
little bit of topsy-turvy early start to the year and we go up against a really good team and we
we handle our business thatcher demko loves torturing the vegas golden knights back to the
phoenix kai arizona coyotes the salt lake city coyotes five bucks in the jar um travis yost
tweeted this and this is the perfect way to end things because it's ending the way that it started
it's a full circle coyotes payroll 32 million for forwards okay 10 million for defense it's not a
that's pretty cheap that is uh that's eric carlson with salary retained how many leafs
make more than all of them oh four four leaves uh next year anyway next year yeah uh five million
in goaltending okay and 23 million in ltir just not just not steve what are your thoughts but i'm
sure they'll tweet something you know it's poor poor and unideal yeah that's it yeah that's that's
it so what's your common rational opinion jason zucker you're going to the playoffs enjoy sir
so new jersey as late as last night uh it was being reported that by emily caplan of espn
that they were still in on markstrom it was still close to happening it could still go down at any
time that's probably a grumpy guy today today oh i can't wait for his oh yeah that'll be interesting
unless he gets dealt today jake allen is on the move to a team that already has vtech vanacek
signed through next season and whose goaltending is absolutely awful now here's the thing montreal
is going to carry half of his contract uh next year as well it's their third retention slot so
They cannot retain any more money, which is important to know.
You wouldn't want too many retention slots.
Too many LTIR spots, we're fine with that.
That's fine.
I want to ask you guys, what do you think of this move for New Jersey?
They can't be happy.
Nothing against Jake Allen, but he's not Jake Markstrom.
They really did get the lesser Jake.
Less than Jake.
They needed this.
They need a goalie.
They couldn't continue this way.
could they do better than jake allen i certainly thought they would try maybe you look at it like
this it's a third round pick like right now and it's a conditional third we don't quite know the
condition yet right okay so i would imagine like games played or something it is based on games
played yeah i am there's only 19 left so how many games could it be yeah well it might extend in the
next year i don't know i don't know we don't know the terms of the conditions yet i imagine this
deal is going to go over like a wet fart with the devil's fan base but i after initially not liking
it have talked myself into it they're only spending a third round pick they've already
gotten that and then some in the toffoli deal they get a goalie for the remainder of the season
i guess you could trick yourself into thinking you have a shot at a playoff spot
it's more for next season you're getting a guy who's probably going to be your starting goalie
or probably at worst your tandem goalie for what what is jake allen at half retained i think it's
like 1.6 1.7 or 1.8 in that neighborhood under two like like that's i just realized i was giving
you the deep v with my uh ref jersey there uh it's uh it's uh you know what no it's a hot look
i'm gonna leave it we're talking about jersey anyway yeah listen um i i i've talked myself
into liking this for jersey but too little too late uh it would have been great if they could
pull this off sooner maybe it wasn't available sooner well i also think i think well no jake
allen's been available but i think what it was is they you're trying to get jake markstrom yes
and but i i i think the team who should be disappointed with this deal honestly is the
montreal canadiens they've been talking about trading this goalie for uh basically since the
moment he got there and he's played well for them so you you figure okay we're gonna get this we're
gonna get that you only get a third round pick and you had to retain half to do it through next
year it's not the king's ransom that you maybe once thought was available there now guys and
jesse i specifically want to ask you this vtech vanacek had a great year last year 245 goals
against average 9-11 save percentage he's injured right now he has started 29 games this year but a
318 goals against average and an 890 save percentage yeah are you relying on vanachek
to return to form because you didn't get markstrom are you and is that a smart bet i think it's it's
reasonable to go into next year with vanachek and alan as your goalies if that's the way it plays
out because like steve was pointing out there it's going to be under five million dollars for
those two goalies combined that's a really good price to be paying for your two starting goaltenders
And I don't know how the RFA deals are going to play out with the rest of your goaltending.
But if Nico Dawes, who was ran into the ground by Lindy Ruff, like he had a good little stretch in the season and then they played him way too much since the beginning of February through now.
And his numbers have completely tailed off.
But if that's your third goalie in your system, you're starting the AHL.
That's a pretty good third goalie.
A Kirschman.
Still 23 years old.
You still have a Kirschman who's up right now on emergency loan.
And there's good for good goalies that you can take a bet on, even though you've seen so far, like it's been a little shaky.
But now that you had Jake Allen to the mix, you don't mind the goaltending.
But if you're a Devils fan and for a few weeks you were expecting Jacob Markstrom and now it's Jake Allen, you can't help but be a little disappointed that you didn't get a bigger fish.
Well, let me let me throw this out there at one point seven or whatever the the cap it is somewhere between one and a half and two million dollars.
if that's all you're paying for jake allen you could absolutely still go get jake markstrom
in the offseason that's the thing this this deal doesn't like stop you from doing more like that's
why it's a pretty good move part i mean you wouldn't need to dump vana check in that scenario
well i'm wondering if vana check isn't a part of that markstrom thing because calgary's gonna need
a goalie to come in or maybe not i mean if dustin wolf is ready i don't know but i you know i i
wondered if that might be a part of it it's jake allen your new backup and then vana checks the
guy that that moves i don't know you you mentioned it very briefly but underrating this whole thing
it does keep their competitive window open for the next month of the season like having a decent
goaltender at least keeps them around like it's not full on tank mode they still want to win some
games here down the stretch and see kind of see what happens and having jake allen gives you that
shot currently you're six points out of the playoffs by the way that's it's not insurmountable
it's longer than it seems it's not great how they played yeah but they are they are six straight
wins maybe you know like a crazy hot week could get them right back into it the metro is the
weirdest division out there right now because you have two teams one out one in who are selling and
buying the devils and flyers and we'll get to the flyers later listen william lagson has been
claimed off waivers uh by the anaheim ducks now that makes sense uh the ducks don't have anyone
and generally speaking uh it's bad to not have anyone this is not good news for the leafs though
um it helps them i suppose with a little bit of flexibility uh the writing was on the wall
a little bit uh the leafs acquired ilia labushkin without taking away from the roster which is good
they acquired joel edmondson without taking away from the roster which is good but william lagasin
six foot two uh 211 pounds according to hockey db he's a left-handed shot but he can play the
right side and we know that because we've seen it in fact last week on his birthday notably
he was the d partner for morgan riley does this guy not have depth brad for living player written
all over him i kind of wondered throughout the course of the season why he didn't get into more
games i didn't think he was playing poorly he had a couple moments that i didn't love but he had
more moments that i loved than not i heading into this season i would have put him ahead of simone
benoit now simone benoit's had an absolutely fantastic season uh for the leafs but the
problem here is look at the lineup right they got their top six lilligran might be coming out
i would probably say this decreases the chance of the leafs trading lilligran unless they get
a defender back giordano is going to be out of the lineup but then you're still only a couple
injuries away from like connor timmons in your playoff lineup max legeois maybe marshall refi
it's not the greatest anaheim ducks fans uh what i would say this guy has snarl i think greg cronin
is going to absolutely love him he can play him in any position uh on the decor he can play the
power play he's never done it in the nhl he's done in the ahl he can do the penalty kill at the nhl
level for sure can play the left can play the right like i said left-handed shot but one thing
that i need you to take care of okay make sure you get the tape because 90 nhl games into his career
lagson has played for the oilers he was a fourth round pick of the oilers he's played for the
montreal canadians and he's played for the toronto maple leafs he played 30 games with them this year
that matches his career high for games played in a season by the way he does not have an nhl goal
when he finally scores it for the ducks and you know it's going to happen in game 80 81 or 82 i'm
calling it right now get the tape around that puck uh because wild bill deserves it from you noted
alan walsh client by the way i wonder if we'll be able to speak to alan later today possibly
and if you want to get to know more about wild bill william lagason he was on an episode of

Don't you wish you could just hit skip on the worst parts of your life?
You know, the same way you can skip an ad?
I get it.
I'm Siaya and I live in Ice Cove.
I've made some questionable decisions that didn't end up the way I planned.
And today I'm still figuring it out.
Somehow things usually get worse before they get better.
Apparently, that's how I roll.
So bundle up and come along for the bumpy ride.
Don't miss the new season of North of North starting September 8th on CBC Gem.
We got two moves in Philadelphia today for the surprise Philadelphia Flyers
who are very much in the playoffs and very much looking like they're going to stay.
They're buying. They're selling. They're both.
They're everything in between. They're tinkering.
Let's start with this.
Dennis Guriana, former first-round pick.
I believe he was like a 14th overall pick at one point.
12th. There you go.
um has uh joined the has excuse me joined the philadelphia flyers he has one goal one assist
in 14 games with the predators this season he scored 20 with dallas in 2019 2020 wade allison
going the other way what do we think about dennis gurion off joining the philadelphia flyers it
seems like an odd pick for a john tortorella team yeah it's two players who are just tantalizing
man uh like or at very least they were once upon a time uh guryanov was drafted nine years ago
and that's crazy i know and at what point at what point do you go okay maybe he's just not who we
thought he's fast he's dude here he's fast he's six foot three he's 205 pounds what about that
is not to like he's 26 years old again what about that is not to like this is the sort of guy
who should just be wrecking shop and he's not now something happened this season that I think could
be good for him though so he's been in the NHL consistently a career high of 31 points it just
hasn't been happening for him this year he went to the AHL with the Milwaukee Admirals in 27 games
12 goals 18 assists for 30 points maybe he needed to go to the minors and maybe this is the beginning
of what could be the late bloomer stage in his career the the career trajectory that i'm kind
of thinking of for dennis gurian of is stephan nason a dude who was a total throw-in in the
leafs blue jackets uh nick felino deal um he played one game for them i think he then completely wreck
shop in the minors the next year and now he's on like the first unit power play for the carolina
hurricanes maybe not anymore after today uh but uh he he's he obviously enjoyed like a renaissance
in his career that could happen for gurian up to wade allison is kind of the 2016 version of that
maybe not quite as high stakes he was a second round pick um for the philadelphia flyers and
flyers fans i'm sure you already know this but in case you don't already apologies in advance
for ruining your day wade allison 52nd overall 2016 who was 53rd i'll give you a clue he was
a noted alan walsh client 53rd and it would have completely changed the makeup of the philadelphia
flyers i don't know philip heronic oh wow oh wow now guriano's played games in the nhl this year
allison's played games in the nhl this year i think he has nine goals like he's
neither of these players are bad they're just you need to be more than just not bad to to crack a
top 12 in the nhl um i believe in both these guys i think they can both play i'm fascinated to see
what a coach who tolerates nothing in john tortorella does with dennis carriana the other
move philadelphia made today guys and jesse this is what i want to i want to ask you veterans
stanley cup winning defenseman eric johnson yeah from from buffalo to philly for a reported fourth
round pick in 2024 he's played 50 games with the sabers this season almost a thousand in his career
it seems to make a lot more sense than gary on up does doesn't it i love the idea of rewarding
this flyers group with a vet like eric johnson you know he's not gonna he's not quite selling
despite selling no but they need they want extra bodies on the back end and eric johnson provides
that and he's a ufa at the end of it he's 35 plus like he's he's he's old and beaten up and
his time there isn't for to be a long-term flyer this is for we might make the playoffs here and
it looks like we're going to let's get eric johnson to bolster up this team because we're
not just going to sell off everything we've already sold off quite a bit but we can get
something back and for a fourth round pick that's going to help us in this stretch run eric johnson
is going to be very useful for the flyers these are the kind of deals that you never see coming
ahead of trade deadline but they always happen it's just they're not the sexy ones so you forget
about it um you know sean walker that's the one we all had our eyes on and what we've been talking
about for weeks is why are they selling i understand you're still rebuilding but you're
in a playoff spot why are you selling they sold when it made sense with the future in mind but
they're not punting on the season guriana is going to play games for them maybe playoff games if they
make it uh eric johnson is going to play playoff games for them if they make it um i i think the
they're trying to have their cake and eat it too it'll be fascinating to see if it works
um they're doing what's right for the future of this team but it's also important to get
playoff experience i think daniel briere is in the greatest position ever like how can you not
just be elated with the way this season gone like you were supposed to be selling everything like
nothing the flyers aren't supposed to be where they are now and look at them they're they're
sitting happy in the in the metro division they're gonna make the playoffs and they're gonna be
a hard out like if the flyers don't make the playoffs fans will be disappointed but will they
be disappointed with you it's not it's not the end of the world even they're supposed to be
rebuilding and it'd be it's bonus the way they're playing this season i i don't think they're gonna
miss but if they do like there's no reason to be disappointed in the team itself there's reason
you want them to win you want them to win for sure but like look at the bigger picture
exactly uh i think today so far there might still be moves the flyers have done a really good job
addressing the future and the present small story do you guys know why the philadelphia flyers are
named the philadelphia flyers no so ed snyder bought the team way back when and they needed
to come up with a name for the team so they decided like most teams we're gonna hold a contest
we're gonna ask all the fans to submit your names we're gonna take them we're gonna evaluate that
During the contest, while it was on, Ed Schneider's sister came to him, Phyllis Schneider, and said,
Hey, what if we just called them the Flyers? That's a cool name. It goes well with Philadelphia.
Ed Schneider said, OK, let's cancel the contest mid-contest and just call them the Flyers.
And ever since then, his sister just saying, that's a cool name. And that's why they're called the Flyers.
So maybe acquiring Eric Johnson is just like, hey, that's cool. Let's do that.
And that's just the ethos of who they are.
I like that.
I like that.
Lulz, dog.
Lulz.
You know what?
When you're a rich guy's anything, sister, friend, whatever,
you can have things like that happen.
Fuck the fans.
Yeah.
Who needs to come up with a name for a contest?
Why would I engage the community when I could simply ask my sister?
Absolutely wild.
Yeah, you know what, though?
Big shout out to the Philadelphia Flyers for, frankly,
a very surprising year.
The vibes are great in Philadelphia.
The players are all commenting each other's Instagram.
feels like they're very together in that room and producer drew obviously who knows eric johnson
very well being a longtime fan of the avalanche said he's an absolute dog that pk guy blocks
everything that's exactly the type of player that john tortorella wants i want you to catch
that puck with your teeth that's that kind of guy and he will absolutely
andrew peak is a boston bruin and so is pat maroon we're going to start with andrew peak
uh because he is it's really interesting with andrew peak you look at his offensive numbers
and they're not good analytically if you look at his defensive numbers they're worse so why is
boston interested i'm gonna throw it out there you know how i keep saying the ducks uh stats don't
count yeah columbus there are a few teams that have been so bad for so long that you really can't
take anything to do with uh their analytics seriously right and then they go to a team
that's like good and reputable and you go oh you know what i mean like at what point does a team
uh have the benefit of the doubt i think the boston bruins should probably have it they're
looking at what they've done like jim montgomery deserves the jack adams trophy more this year
than last and he won it last year the team on paper was better it was way better now they won
65 games and they're not going to do that uh again but they're still competing for the top of the
division top of the conference you know shot at the president's trophy they might lose to a team
in their division welcome to our nightmare boston um but uh you know he peak has not been part of a
good program but he's been highly touted for so long i'm kind of believing boston's thought
process on this one okay all right jesse andrew peak boston bruin uh i know andrew peak has been
like out of the lineup in columbus like he hasn't been able to make their starting decor a lot of
their best players have been out of the lineup for that team yeah so it's it's been a weird rocky
season for peak so i'm not too concerned about what like he's bringing to the table right now
because i don't know what he brought to columbus and he's gonna he's gonna play a completely
different role in boston so it's hard to say what he's gonna provide because this season we haven't
seen what he can do because of how shaky and weird columbus has been with the management
of their players you know what i hope he brought to columbus is a bag so we can get the hell out
of there it's been a nightmare of an experience for him and it's good for columbus to start
offloading these defensemen because frankly they have a log jam and they got to get rid of some of
them and there's a lot of problems and maybe they can use some of these defensemen that are valuable
elsewhere to fix every other problem that they have well and adam you know do you know you work
for a columbus blue jackets podcast you do i do agent provocateur because jacob's boral is a noted
alan walsh client wow and he joins other noted client david urechek correct and they uh will
play together in the minors as a d pair potentially if the blue jackets continue to be weird and make
him play there um they should probably stop being weird and let him play not there um who knows
maybe they'll even both be in the nhl together and it's it's a 2027 third round pick from the
bruins as well 2027 better than the kick in the pants i guess how many times has a third round
pick been traded for a guy who was regularly healthy scratched man well it's 2024 though
it's third round pick season it's everyone is going for a third round pick yeah because it
used to be like that with seconds right and you used to trade a first round pick for a guy whose
contract was expiring no one does that anymore now we're trading for term right the cap friendly
page for the draft this year is going to be a mess it's going to be great i like that gms are
moving the picks a little bit more to that now i want to talk about this because boston is now
not only are they without their 20 27 third they're also without their 20 26 sixth round pick
but why because they had to get pat maroon patrick maroon also luke toporoski is going to uh is going
to Minnesota as well.
The top dog.
Hey!
Look at that!
So, Pat Maroon,
who Jack Edwards...
Everybody's making
the Jack Edwards joke today
because Jack said something
about Pat eating pizzas.
Now they're going to be
eating pizzas together in Boston.
It would be great
if they posted a picture
eating a pizza together.
That would be great.
Arms linked like at a wedding.
Yeah.
That's your social media.
Or like a piece of broccoli.
But Jack has to eat the broccoli.
Yeah.
Or does Pat work on it?
We'll work on the comedy gold.
Yeah, we'll get there.
Yes.
So let me ask you, Pat Maroon, you were Toronto Maple Leafs fans.
We know we're probably playing Boston.
And Pat Maroon is the guy we've played in the first round the last two years.
Why not a third?
Well, it's interesting.
Like, I don't know how much this guy is going to play.
He was injured about a month ago.
We know what he can do when healthy.
I strongly question whether or not he's healthy.
now he's got a month left a little over a month maybe five weeks until uh the playoffs begin
they've sort of filled the role of huge guy on the fourth line um there was milan lucic he's very not
there right now uh justin brazzo has come in and he's big every time he's big every time and here's
a fun little idea just a potential little pickle for the rest of the teams in the division can you
imagine a fourth line with both of them with patrick maroon and justin brezzo it would zero
hyperbole be the heaviest line in the league those guys combine are around the neighborhood of
475 pounds something like that 450 to 475 that is a lot of human being uh crunching you into the
boards and to be honest I want to say this too yeah if Pat Maroon fights somebody let's say they
fight somebody on the Leafs and or Justin Brazile fights somebody on the Leafs right in the playoffs
and they both go off I think Boston takes whomever they fight like they take that trade every time
and the reason I say that is it's not like Pat Maroon's there he has scored big goals in the
past this is a guy that played with McDavid on the first line that's how bad the Oilers were at one
point but this guy's been in the finals he's done his thing he's on the back nine of his career
probably the back three or four of his career went to four straight cup finals 100 so he's got
the experience and he's gonna know when to jump in and be nasty and if we saw anything last night
with boston at least we know it's going to be a rough and tumble series but it feels like boston
is loading up and going we know it's gonna for them it's toronto and then it's likely florida
man you got to get big and tough what one of the most underrated performance in the 2022 stanley
cup final i thought was josh manson of the colorado avalanche patrick maroon did his best
to crack that egg he went at him he went at him he went at him and if manson ever took the bait
and he's off the ice i think that final could have gone into a three-peat for tampa jesse boston must
know more than us i guess about patrick maroon because he hasn't played a game since january
27th and then a week after that they diagnosed him with a back injury and he hasn't played
you know so i like where is the confidence that patrick maroon with a bad back injury is going to
get back into action soon before the playoffs get acclimatized to this new roster and then be in the
hard-fought playoff series against the toronto maple leafs like are we how is that play what i
just outlined is what must happen and that sounds like a very difficult task but if anybody's up to
it it's patrick moon obviously who's been through a couple wars now but if you're you're traded
assets for him it's a difficult thing to ask how about this he doesn't need to be ready for game
one of the playoffs uh if i'm boston i'm looking forward and i'm like there's depth for the second
and third round i want to throw something else okay why not since we are talking boston what
would make the least sense for boston to do with this trade deadline too much no no what would make
the least sense in terms of moving off their roster the goalie uh yes i don't think it makes
any sense don't touch them so here's what's interesting kevin weeks of espn has just
reported that the bruins thought they had something with lenis olmark what but quote
there was a deal that he essentially nixed in large part based on geography i'm told he is a
16 team no trade list good interesting that going into the playoffs if this is true that boston would
be willing to move a goalie i think like they're the whole philosophy behind that is you deal away
from your strength to address your weaknesses but i think if we learned anything is you want
to double down on your strength and just keep it like you have this tandem that is the strongest
goalie tandem in the league why would you take away from that but only one goalie can play at
a time yeah so if you have swayman and he's your best goalie having all marks it there doesn't help
your team lenis allmark geography was the problem feels like canada edmonton edmonton yeah it feels
like canada wow like edmonton question mark i wonder if that comes out later as of this recording
obviously we don't know but boston gets bigger they get meaner they get more boston and as a
leaf fan i just hope we do something last week dave pagnotta said that teams looking to upgrade
their fourth uh their uh their blue line will probably have to start with guys like Tanev
Walker and Dumba the asking price starts with a first round pick as a half cake eater I'm offended
by you saying penyota penyota okay so peg nada so a week ago Tanev Walker were first round picks
that was the ask now we know Walker did go for a first we know Tanev did go for a second what did
matt dumba go for just guess steve uh the theme of deadline day today has been third round picks
i'm gonna say a third round pick and that would be a really intelligent guess uh matt dumba and
a seventh round pick in 2025 to the tampa bay lightning in exchange for a fifth round pick in
27 and no retention oh my god dude a fit these prices are basement oh my goodness i mean if
you're okay sorry jesse i thought you'd already seen it i didn't know that you were being i did
i did it's just it's hard to hear you can question the fit in tampa um you can't question the price
no exactly like for that price who gives a crap if he's even in the lineup you're doing a pick
swap of something like a pick in the 190s 200s for something off the top of my head like 150 ish
what dumba and a seventh for a fifth yeah in 2027 wait troy stetcher was a fourth yes
LaBushkin was a third and a sixth.
But you had to double retain.
Edmonton got Stetcher and a seventh from Arizona for a fourth round pick.
Yeah.
So Dumbo went for less?
Yes.
Holy cow.
This season was a buyer's market.
This deadline was a buyer's market,
and you would have got a better deal the longer you waited.
You would have got it.
I mean, look at.
I mean, Edmonton.
What was the Edmonton deal?
A third and a fifth.
I think it might have been a six or was
Labushkin a six
Edmonton was a third and a fifth
Labushkin was a third and a six Edmonton's a third
and a fifth and it cost one
fifth for Matt Dumba
I mean those prices seem pretty expensive when you
consider holy crap
this dude well I mean that's that's nothing
you could be the biggest detractor of
Matt Dumba you could hate his game you
shouldn't even be in the NHL and this
would still be a worthwhile price
the lightning
are miles removed from tanner genoville not to make this about the Leafs but this looks awful
on Bradshaw living well I mean there's a few guys it doesn't look the greatest on but I mean the
theme of the day has been deals where you know we're a little underwhelmed by it but we're like
ah the risk is nothing because the cost was nothing exactly this is the most nothing nothing
of them all um and i think i have something for the nothing uh john uh gambadoro uh tweets the
coyotes deal with tampa for dumba is for a pick swap in the later rounds which is a better way
of putting it saves the coyotes a couple million bucks as well that's what it is so it's real
dollars do you look at zucker you look at zucker deal it's the zucker deal that's just don't make
me pay for this you gotta don't make me pay for this you got a fifth seventh pick swap for dumba
and you got a sixth for zucker and they signed them so that they could harvest picks and prospects
and they didn't get them no no at the beginning of the season we were under the impression they
signed them to compete for god's sake well that's what the twitter account probably told you that's
what i believed that's what oh that twitter account is sassy they're sassy and now they're
up to god knows how many picks dude it doesn't matter it doesn't matter if you're just gonna do
this the team's a bit of a slop in the face to like competitiveness in the national hockey league
i mean what they're doing here they get more fans in a college rank than they did in glendale
which is definitely the the uh the flex that you think it is dude it's it's that's it's
disgraceful it's disgraceful disgraceful franchise it's uh it's gonna be very interesting to see the
fallout from that um but yeah i listen tampa loading up yeah good for them good for tampa
for nothing that's a that's a great piece of work by julian breezewell uh declare for
peanuts shit all and dumb but for somehow less that's that's pretty good tidy work

So when we had originally recorded this video,
which was right after the news came out,
we were unsure about what picks were headed where,
and it has to do with a Darren Drager tweet
that was deleted and then reposted,
and then he said there were two third-round picks,
and we thought, what?
A tweet that was very clearly copy and pasted
from a Vegas Golden Knights executive.
Allegedly.
Allegedly.
Okay, so here's what it is.
The Golden Knights are sending a 2025 first round pick and forward David Edstrom, who apparently is a really good prospect to the Sharks, while third round picks in 25 and 27 head back to Vegas.
Drager adds that the Sharks will retain 17% of Tomas Hurdle's salary, bringing his cap hit to $6.75 million, the trade originally broken by the Bob father, Bob McKenzie.
um it's in the video i talked about how hey you know what sharks got like some decent return here
but like vegas obviously killed it uh vegas with an app they got two more yeah this changes a little
bit axe murder yeah how do they how do they mike stevens with one of the tweets of the day at the
end of the regular season the vegas golden knights had the opportunity to activate 17 million dollars
worth of salary from ltir and they got picks for it yeah is he including like robin letter in that
that's great who cares i guess yeah unbelievable anyway let's get to the video david edstrom which
was the first round pick of vegas in 2023 they just took him right yeah yeah um dude they hate
their own first round hurdle at 6.75 so that might help the ltir situation 18 percent 17
percent very good jesse fan they also got san jose also gets a third in 2025 and a third in
2027 and i think this is good for san let's start with the san jose angle here i think this is good
for san jose because they did get a first but he's already picked and they already had a chance to
look at him and they obviously like him so wait it was the first they just picked yeah so it was
32nd yes yes i like that i like i like they got two first round picks here help me out does hurdle
have an expiring deal uh no he's still signed through do you have oh my god they got a discount
of thomas hurdle going forward no but he signed for like eight years he signed till 2030 right
he signed uh after this season there's one two three four five six more seasons they gave up
the 30 the dude they picked 32nd and two-thirds for a discounted quality player and another first
in 2025 oh and another first yes so it's two first and two-thirds yes
and it's still tidy business for vegas that it is good for the shark i i really like it for the
sharks because you get out from this deal it's the same philosophy with eric carlson you don't want
this long contract sitting through your entire rebuild you know yeah you want to have these
the room on your roster for the young players you don't want that eating up your salary cap
even though it's going to eat up part of it because it's a 18 what did we say 18 17 percent
retained yes so it's about 1 1.25 it's going to be there for six seasons but it's not 8.1 million
dollars that hurdle was making i also want to say i don't think there's any team in the league that
will have retained so little salary for so long when you consider hurdle and eric carlson those
Those are long contracts, and they're just little bits of money that are going to come off the books, but the San Jose Sharks are in it for the long haul with this teardown.
It's going to be a long, long go.
And that's the truth.
That is the truth.
So what you get, though, is you're building a window, and the window starts with somebody who is 18 years old this year in likely, hopefully for their sake, Celebrini.
now if if you end up with celebrina you got you got a 2021st from or 2023 first from last year
right because that's what edstrom is uh yes so you're talking about the shark yeah so you're
building these guys together you want to keep these guys within a five-year window of each
other so they can grow together that's the whole point so that's a good start for san jose now
let's talk about vegas let's do the other side let's talk about the fact that this team
Like, okay, if your team, and I'm a Leafs fan,
and this is what they use as an excuse all the time.
Oh, the cap.
Oh, the cap.
Everyone does.
Everyone does.
The cap is so out.
And look, you look at Noah Hannafin and Tomasz Hurtl.
Noah Hannafin, I believe, plus an extension.
Did we not get an extension on Hannafin?
No.
No, not yet.
Not officially.
I think that'll happen.
They're working on one.
Noah Hannafin at $1.237 million.
because he's double retained and thomas hurdle who's also retained this is going to be crazy
vegas going into the playoffs don't let your team lie to you and tell you that they can't get
something done if he wanted to he would it's a rule in dating and it's a rule in hockey general
managers as well is it not and he's huge he the vegas golden knights acquire vegas golden knights
oh my gosh they were oh my gosh they could have i mean they're gonna go into the into the playoffs
the biggest team again who did they lose from the last run riley smith yeah that's it so you're
assuming everyone gets healthy in time for the playoffs which they might be lucky enough to pull
off they will be subtracting riley smith and adding anthony mantha and thomas hurdle yes
so so this report comes from elliot friedman hurdle by the way is expected to return in the
regular season wow well not anymore 82 the regular season yes but that's so everybody
complaining about it is because they're saying he's going to stay on ltir until the playoffs
and then they're going to cheat with cap if he comes back within the regular season then you
have to fit him within the salary cap where the salary cap counts it's not cap excuse me while i
put on my mike herring uh harrington cap expected by whom maybe the sharks expected him back in the
regular season vegas yeah although you got to get him into the lineup a little bit he's a new he's
new on the team what the hell are they doing there's like i don't like the narrative of let's
get mad at vegas for cap circumvention and all that non i fully respect that one your team can
do this and they choose not to that is the thing the arizona coyotes right now are choosing to not
field a real roster and they want all of this ltir space so they can just meet the cap floor
the vegas golden knights are choosing to live above the the cap ceiling and that's the right
of every single national hockey league team you should credit them for being creative and going
for it all the time they just drafted this guy and he's gone their first round picks this year
and next year gone because they're trying to win again and again and again so don't get mad at them
for that also um the nhl is keeping tabs on these things you know nhl doesn't like this so if you
think they're skirting the rules and the nhl is just like that's our expansion team let them go
to do whatever no gary doesn't like this and they're checking it so hurdle is going to be
ready before game one of the playoffs he better be in the lineup or there's going to be some sort
of penalty coming down from the nhl there's a greater than zero percent chance the trade
just completely gets vetoed it could happen it could have they announced to donov didn't they
yeah we traded this guy and and then all of a sudden it didn't happen now completely different
circumstances here's what i want to know uh and cap friendly if they're fully up to date
would have this math after the vegas golden knights won the stanley cup last year bill foley
probably to the dismay of gary betman went on a show i don't remember which one and he said
if the angle podcast steve dangle pockets yeah i wish he said um if there was no salary cap he
would spend 135 million are they there they've got to be close they were at 93 they weren't even
the highest uh spending team like no shut the front door leafs uh front and back inside hurdle
hasn't been added yet because uh the trade call is not official but they're the fourth uh highest
spending team right now like the leafs it's lightning avalanche vegas golden knights 97 for
the leafs 93 for tampa 91 for colorado 90 for vegas so even 90 plus 6 million doesn't surpass
the toronto maple leafs who are currently spending 97 million in projected cap by the end of the year
and you know maybe they're just not doing it as well yeah i mean what i mean the thing is like
murray and muzzin and those guys that were never clingberg clingberg yeah on that yeah yeah that is
like we're just talking about the strictly numbers the leafs are spending that money
and so is vegas wow now we look at vegas and we say what a juggernaut we look at the least when
you say you know what boston's gonna be tough this week hurdle hannifin and mantha added to
that vegas lineup get out of here and they've been not good yeah they needed they needed an
injection well i think what's important to note is uh like they're in a wild card spot right now
they're in a wild card spot so all these injuries all this ltir shenanigans comes at a cost
like it might come at the cost of home ice um and is that a risk that vegas is willing to take
and what i would say to that is it's not a risk it's just reality they're doing their best with
reality um is there maybe a bit of gaming going on here possibly but like we're talking about guys
getting like surgery uh a stone i don't remember if it was last year the year before um had mid
season surgery you know lacerated spleen the lacerated spleen this like that is i i talked
about it on the show that that injury put a buddy of mine out of hockey like it's a very
yes serious injury uh with bad uh with serious implications if the injury is bad you called
you called it shenanigans but it's not shenanigans because they're legitimate injuries like the
finagling the first time stone was out in 2022 he was out with a back injury his first back surgery
yes and they missed the playoffs and he returned with nine games to go to try and get them into
the playoffs and they couldn't do it and then last season he has the second back surgery and
then this year it's another lacerated spleen they don't want in a perfect world they're just healthy
and dominating and to try to get into the playoffs two years ago jack eichel played with a broken
thumb for a long time yes um and then they come back the next year and they win the friggin cup
yeah and now here they are they added barbashev we're like there's no way they can keep barbashev
they kept barbershop uh there's no way they can add hannifin they added hannifin they kept
barbershop at the expense of riley smith who they kind of swapped contracts who gives a damn like
who gives that's a dude well onto the wrong side of 30 for a huge kid in his prime who's now got
a second cup and he let you know it in the cup that is what vegas does them they are they're
able to say yeah hey you've been really great here bye well like they're they have no loyalty
and it's working for them yeah they're the best you can say no loyalty and i think there's some
truth there but it's also logic so let's say uh they move on from alec martinez which i expect
them to there's another guy who they shouldn't have been able to keep a couple years ago let's
say they move on from alec martinez uh that helps them keep noah hannifin what's noah hannifin
noah hannifin you could argue is a younger version of alec martinez what are you doing holding on to
that guy when this guy's here why not why not a little more expensive alec martinez who had to
be moved to ir to make room for noah hannifin but nobody don't let's not talk about that
i can't i can't but it's a fact of life um so anyway myrtle uh gives them i mean what do they
got nicholas nicholas wa nick wa chan jack eichel um byron phrase yeah oh what what happened with
phrases he a part of he's down they sent him down yeah they sent him down yeah yeah he's a part of
these moves to make no no don't you dare don't you dare pull up twitter don't you dare no there's
something else broken and where and you're not touching it okay yeah what were you trying to do
trying to go through i was just trying to look at their depth like it's it's oh that we can pull up
dude it's stupendous it's yeah it's it's a murderer's row of now but we do what we got
to remember they are in the second wild card position william carlson is the center you
missed by the way oh my god eichel hurdle carlson wah phrase those are your five centers
damn is right olympic maddie just said damn yes yes damn is the right and the star of the team
michael amadio a hundred percent yo just third liner michael amadio underratedly a really shitty
kyle davis move well how many times are we gonna say that no do you remember looking back on the
last you remember who he got from who no one he waved him there you go oh i do want to say that
some of those have not aged well no um now that we have a little hindsight i'm gonna say most
not feeling good about things huh nah well oh are you gonna make me feel worse
what maybe you'll have to see the next video
the trade is read it to me in full daddy leafs send a fourth in 2026 to the minnesota wild
okay for a center
a center a center so who could it be connor dewar over to you
connor dewar
brad dude this that's the move that's the move we don't trust max domey so that's the let me look
this up let me look this up because I need to get his stats on the season because I'm so excited
I'm so happy that they're paying David Kampf 2.5 million dollars for what for what exactly what are
they going out and getting another center for you're spending 11 million dollars on John Tavares
yes he's been battling injuries but he hasn't pulled his weight Austin Matthews has more than
pulled his weight he's on the best goal scoring pace in Toronto Maple Leafs history Max Domi has
filled in admirably at times unless they play a really good opponent then he just turns into
sort of a goon here it is right here adam pulled it up for me this is from nick de souza he's a
leafs twitter account that i do like to follow connor oh boy let me put on my glasses connor
dewar cost controlled 24 year old pending rfa all right we like that i'm i'm reminding myself
i'm having a hard time because i'm looking at this in terms of how do they win a cup this year
That's not necessarily how you look at a deal.
Although I would like them to win the cup this year.
You got to look at it.
What did they pay?
A 2026,
a 26 fourth round pick.
So it's a fourth round pick three drafts from now.
Connor door cost controlled 24 year old pending RFA.
Very used to getting defensive zone starts.
I thought I freaking thought that was what David Campbell's for has spent a
ton of time on the mini PK again.
not a big guy by any means brad switching it up on us but throws a ton of hits and doesn't shy
away from scrums after the whistle so listen uh this does sound like a player the leafs could
use he's got 10 goals on the season in 57 games uh it's depth um for the bargain bin price that
teams were paying today i'm a little surprised that it cost as much as a fourth but the fact
that he's so young and a pending rfa i'm sure was a big factor in all that um boy boy boy boy
the leaf spent five draft picks this no they didn't they spent six draft picks this trade
deadline and what did they get they got Ilya Labushkin for a third and a sixth they got Joel
Edmondson for a third and a fifth they got Cade Weber who everyone forgets about who is probably
not even going to play for the Leafs uh this year in fact I would say very likely even though he's
huge he's currently playing university hockey hasn't signed a contract yet and has a deadline
of august 15th to do it and now they give up one for connor dewar a big old like like so
what are we doing guys
let me ask you this you're disappointed right now because the leafs didn't go out and get
colton pareko here's a lesson in media literacy who told you that
who told you that was coming who told you that was the guy
he well he shoots right-handed just because it makes sense to get him doesn't mean that
was ever in the works ever no one ever told you it was in the works it got to the point where i
wanted him to i mean i guess at very least they didn't spend that first round pick i like i guess
what i'm ranting about right now is not this trade this trade is fine this trade is actually
tidy work i don't mind it even if he doesn't work out fourth round pick i'm trying to figure out
where the hell he plays noah gregor very clearly isn't it i guess they're under the impression
that pontus holmberg isn't it like is he so bad that he was worth spending a fourth to get this
guy over Brad for living is going to do a ton of tinkering this off season and I think the
frustration with this fan base and the frustration you're hearing from me is it's March next month
will be April and after that May and June and I would love for the Leafs to play games there
and I want to see them win a Stanley Cup they didn't get the big sexy name
they didn't do very well against boston yesterday well it was on the second half of a back-to-back
they didn't do very well earlier in the week when it wasn't on home ice so i want them badly
to have a good playoff and conor duar might help them in this playoff
but you can't tell me that's not an underwhelming trade deadline
we'll talk about that more here on sdpn we're going to do some recaps here do we have some
other trades to go through that we haven't even touched yet probably probably new york i think
new york okay so for now that is it for this one thank you very much for watching click like if
you like this video click subscribe if you really liked it tell all your friends that this trade in
a vacuum brad but brad in general the 2026 chevrolet tracks is the stylish suv for those
on the move and with the standard chevy safety assist package you have the backup to handle
every turn with confidence the 2026 tracks start your build at chevrolet.ca
um guys who wants to start we'll start with winners okay who wants to go first class
for a winner of this year's trade deadline and i'm almost positive i know what everybody's team
is going to be so only if you pick a team no one else can pick it can't all have the same yeah i
like that i like that all right i'm not taking any of your teams i'm my team is the best my team won
the most it won the hardest it won the hardest okay so adam diamond one here's how i think it's
gonna go you're gonna say the actual biggest winner that we're all talking about no i'm gonna
make it difficult jesse's gonna do a meme okay well who should start do you want me to start i
would like you to start adam just say vegas thank you okay thomas hurdle anthony mantha uh noah
hannifin and it gets even better if noah hannifin signs an extension because you didn't you didn't
have to go to calgary and say hey can i talk to his agent and then have calgary you know bend you
over a barrel right you are absolutely in the best position ever because noah hannifin can come in
he's gonna fit in right fit in great and you're gonna be able to sign him to extension because
it's vegas the taxes are crazy do you know that it's speculated that tomas hurdle just saved
himself six million dollars over the next six years just in taxes alone i moving state to state
assuming he's enjoying that information now that's a bit of a fallacy because you're assuming that
rich people don't have access to things that we poors don't or do have access to yeah and they do
yeah i know he plays for the check team but did you know he's also from the cayman islands there
you go yeah so here's here's what it is i think that vegas which have severely they've severely
underperformed vegas right now is sitting underneath nashville they had to do something
They had to be bold.
We all know this team has a Stanley Cup pedigree.
They're defending the Stanley Cup this year.
It's not underperformed as much as everyone's hurt.
I don't think people are prepared for the fact that Vegas are underneath Nashville right now in the wildcard.
Because that's where they stand as of this recording.
Well, so this is the thing.
And so I think that Vegas needed to be bold.
And here's the thing.
They were bold.
So many teams at this deadline needed to be bold.
And they did the half measure.
Vegas went full bore.
They're my winner today.
steve you go ahead uh this team added uh a lot um for not a lot uh the carolina hurricanes
real sneaky real sneaky i didn't think they needed to add on the decor um we were talking
about them moving off of guys brett pesci being one of them uh they didn't have to take away from
that strength goaltending would it have been nice to add one yeah that would have been nice they did
the other day you catch that it's frederick anderson he's back he looks all right up front
where they could use a little bit of depth they move off of michael bunting who's a fine player
i think he's going to do fine in pittsburgh it wasn't a match wasn't a match in carolina
wasn't going to work they move off him they trade i think it's three prospects was it three prospects
and not even a hard first for jake gensel that is absolutely monstrous when jake gensel went
to the playoffs the last time how many goals did he get there were seven games seven games he had
eight goals ten points i believe and what could the carolina hurricanes not do last year in the
playoffs in the in the eastern conference final score they could not score and everyone threw up
their arms and went bob well it's bob um i don't even know if bob is uh gonna be the answer here
uh and to to get evgeny kuznetsov at 3.9 i think is a perfect flyer 3.9 this year flyer as in risk
not philadelphia he's a perfect risk at that number and they're getting him for that number
next year oh that's beautiful good deal good deal and you've in in my opinion you did you did pretty
well in those deals both of those deals were against uh teams in your own division i am
patiently waiting for jesse blake's answer now i'm not because oh my gosh because i want to know
he's you know jesse's sneaky yeah you guys you guys gave out some nice answers that's all fun
But this team, just because they play in Canada, they go a little under the radar.
They're in the central of Canada.
When I look towards the playoffs, I say defense wins championships.
And this team leads the league in goals against.
Nobody has allowed less goals than this team.
That's the Winnipeg Jets.
And the Winnipeg Jets got better.
And nobody is giving them the credit.
They are due for being a dynamic team that can now run out four unbelievable lines that also has the best goaltender in the world right now.
They're able to stop the puck, and all they needed was a right winger on the second line, and now they have that in Tyler Toffoli.
And the Sean Monaghan deal, what they gave up was a first and a third, and that third-round pick only has to be sent to the Montreal Canadiens if the Winnipeg Jets end up winning the Stanley Cup, and they might end up sending that third-round pick anyways.
so that first and that third is definitely worth it because this stretch that they had monahan
has solidified that that uh forward group and now you get even better with tyler toffoli there and
i think they've sneakily had the best um trade deadline this year colin miller also deadline
like 3 p.m deal that's okay came right under the wire colin miller that's nothing to sneeze at
either i think the winnipeg jets are going to be a problem in the playoffs because when it gets
tough is in the playoffs and goals are hard to come by and nobody is better at stopping goals
than the jets this season and to fully is a good playoff performer yes the thing about the trade
deadline it's not just i mean in vegas's case it's literally like power rangers let's strap as
much rocket fuel to our our ship as possible but sometimes the best winners at the trade deadline
are those who augment their team with a couple of moves that maybe aren't the biggest and splashiest
although to fully is pretty splashy and so was money splash but this is this is big and by the
way i i do kind of wonder guys with the way the prices went sean monaghan wouldn't have been worth
the first today no i think ken hughes was smart to take that when he got it yeah but i agree that's
the price you pay for doing it early and getting him on the team yes i feel like it was appropriate
and i'm glad that winnipeg did it and somebody else didn't swoop in there and pay that price
because i feel like other teams would have been willing to pay that and they they ponied up and
they did it and credit to chevy for having a great fit for the lineup he gets accustomed to your
lineup faster uh it helps you stay in your spot in the standings nope i don't and like everybody's
so high on dallas right now because they they make their deal uh they get the defensive and
they're looking for in tanev but the winnipeg jets have games in hand if they win their games
in hand right now they will be leading the central division like like they were leading the entire
league for quite a while they fall back a bit but they're still right there and they could end up
first in the central by the end of the season and go into the playoffs with nice home home ice
advantage so who are the biggest losers now this is difficult because it means that the fan base
that you pick if this team does well you're gonna have to live with that you're gonna have to eat
that they're going to be tweeting this clip at you boys all right it's me too now who wants to
go go first you have a team that you're like definitively that's a l at the trade deadline
look at that face steve is giving uh i don't want to i don't want to call them a loser
um because i don't think they lost but i'm underwhelmed with what the leafs did oh
oh dude honestly they paid like i do think labushkin makes them better i think he's the
early returns there have been good edmondson helps um uh connor doer uh it's difficult to
have an opinion on him uh i just learned his name's not walker uh that's the other guy so
so uh but boy did they give up a lot of picks for a team that was like oh we don't want to
give up that first yeah you'll just give up all the other ones um could always trade it down you
know i mean my answer i've already ranted about um uh because the leafs at very least attempted
to get better at hockey and the arizona coyotes made no such attempt um what they did what they
got for zucker and stetcher and uh dumba doesn't help them now it doesn't help them later it
it helps their owner not have to pay the bills that's where that's where we're going so it did
help them cash in cash out it helps them i mean rather him do this than like stiff city council
or whatever but like it's it's uh like what a disgrace wow okay you're just gonna leave it
there jesse do you want to go next or should i i'll go next okay um i should go last because
i want to hand out a lifetime achievement award oh because this sunday is the oscars right and
we all know how leonardo dicaprio got his oscars i haven't given my loser pick yet by the way
yeah but i said i should go last but i'm going now oh okay all right you're allowed you say you
said i want to go next i said yeah i'll go next and i said i should go last because i want to
give up my lifetime achievement award i'm just like to adam just like how leo got his oscar for
the revenant and we know like hey he didn't really deserve it but eventually it came to that point
where you just need to give him that oscar this team this trade deadline they didn't do much
but is the culmination of how they got to this point
is why they deserve this over everybody.
And that's the Ottawa Senators and Vladimir Tarasenko.
Here is your lifetime achievement award
for being the biggest loser this entire season.
You bought this offseason in Vladimir Tarasenko.
He was not supposed to be a rental.
you screwed up this whole season pierre dorian to this point where we reached the trade deadline
you sold them for a terrible return and this is just how this entire season for the senators has
gone everything has been a mess from pinto on from the sale from them not telling them that
they screwed up the dadan off deal them losing a first round pick the goaltending being the worst
in the world you make one deal on trade deadline day and that's to sell your big off-season
an acquisition where you were supposed to make the playoffs
this year. Lifetime Achievement
Award. You are king losers this
year, Ottawa Senators.
Good answer. That's a good answer.
Tara Sanko did say, the only
team I was willing to waive my no-move
clause for was Florida. So if you're underwhelmed
by the returns, you can blame Pierre
Dorian for signing that contract.
You're lucky they got what they got.
You're lucky they got what they got.
Dorian fucked this franchise
for years. He did.
It's a shame because they have
good young pieces they're a fun fan they have fun fan base and it sucks damn damn okay okay
so here's what i'm gonna do one that's unpopular okay um i'm under vegas i'm i want to give a a
notable uh we still see you to a couple of teams okay but i'm not gonna i'm not gonna i'm not gonna
trash them because one of these teams is really really good okay i'm gonna give one you didn't
do anything detroit red wings this team you are you are in the playoffs i didn't do anything i
like that group they traded clem costa okay wow damn there it is um i'm gonna give another one
to and this is again not i don't hate their deadline i just don't love it considering how
they've done um the Vancouver Canucks and the reason I say that is because they did make the
move they paid a lot for Lindholm and then tried to retrade him and then found the prices were
bargain basement low oh my god you overpaid for every because Lindholm that again that price for
Monaghan you wouldn't have got that today that price for Lindholm you wouldn't have got that
today we definitely thought there was more there 100 100 and I think Vancouver fans are let down
because I think they were they were carrot carrot and stick with Gensel right I think the team that
really I was really hoping for a big swing from was the Edmonton Oilers yep the Edmonton Oilers
are a really really really spectacular hockey team but so are the Colorado Avalanche what did
they do well I was gonna say I was gonna ask for some time at the end of the video like honorable
mention winner the abs absolutely really like what they did they moved on from bowen byron did
you see his his his first shift on the power plays like does anybody play that clip that
went viral on twitter of him trying to get people to play the power play buffalo might be a bigger
mess than we know they got out from under ryan johansson's contract ryan johansson is now with
lehigh valley which is crazy to think absolutely in philadelphia uh but lehigh valley is their
ahl affiliate um so you got that you got dallas they made their move with tanf
and they got more dallas right they got more dallas oh you're putting them as a honorable
mention no no i'm talking about i'm comparing edmonton to the teams and they gotta be i was
like dude dallas is really good that's what i'm saying so is so are the apps the abs made a move
sean walker's a big move moving the other guys you know all that sort of thing then you got
dallas making their move early you got vegas doing their thing you got vancouver who did make a move
And Lindholm, even though he hasn't worked out that just yet,
maybe it's a couple of games more.
And then he goes, okay, I figured it out.
What did Edmonton do to make sure that Connor McDavid
wins a Stanley Cup in the next two years?
Because that is what needs to happen.
We are now TikTok two years.
And it's not just because of Connor.
It's because of Leon Dreisaitl.
That contract's up first.
It's up at the end of next year.
And he is an unrestricted free agent.
he is able to sign an extension but guys the cunt you will never have a better shot you're getting
over winning the goals from zach hyman i guess yeah agreed agreed 100 but you are you're never
if you get another 50 goal season out of zach hyman then amazing that's what i'm saying like
there's no guarantee this happens again this is the time yeah this is the time now there was
some sort of rumor out there that lena soul mark was almost moved and then nixed the trade because
of quote-unquote geography if that was edmonton i respect them for trying but here's the thing
about the stanley cup is that nobody cares how many times you tried 32 teams try every year so
you're on everyone's list you play in canada you're on everyone's list well here's here's the
other one that's interesting okay i know calgary probably doesn't want to help their their three
three hour up the road rival but they've made trades before is that how far it is it's three
three hours i thought they were like an hour no i know nothing about it is the most boring stretch
of road you've ever been on in your entire life the only notable thing that i ever saw on a drive
between calgary and edmonton is two horses oh banging right at the side of the road oh it was
crazy it was wild you ever driven middle of winter you ever driven to sarnia uh i have never driven
to sarnia that's why i know uh you're you know the pain uh so it's bad so edmonton edmonton went
after jake markstrom a couple of years ago if they knew jake markstrom was on the market
whatever new jersey was willing to go to on that one that's the guy that's the guy if you can't
get lenis if you don't if you can't get him to waive his no trade clause what about jake markstrom
what about these other things and i don't know that goaltending necessarily is even their achilles
heel i don't love what they have stewart skinner's been really good but i just i feel like give me
something give me more on that defense their edmonton defense when you compare it to colorado
who got better when you compare it to dallas yeah when you compare it to vegas it's not in the same

don't you wish you could just hit skip on the worst parts of your life
You know, the same way you can skip an ad.
I get it.
I'm Siyaya and I live in Ice Cove.
I've made some questionable decisions that didn't end up the way I planned.
And today I'm still figuring it out.

So bundle up and come along for the bumpy ride.
Don't miss the new season of North of North starting September 8th on CBC Gem.
