all right it's gonna be a big show but not a show of many topics a show a few topics but we're going
miles deep because that's what we do sometimes you gotta go miles wide inch deep we're going
miles deep inch wide on this one okay i don't understand but continue okay all right well
listen there are two major things that we need to talk about before we talk about anything else in
the entire world uh actually three we got to find out who wore the crown because that's number one
a plus important okay you cannot i don't even know how people function without knowing who wore the
crown every day right like we could like the fact that we don't even do the show every day there are
people that wake up five days a week because we only do the show twice a week who are like i don't
know who wore the crown today i'm not sure i can get out of bed and to you i say uh godspeed but
we will give you the best crown segment we possibly can each and every time uh and then we need to
talk about the montreal canadiens why uh there are some news in montreal the juggernaut habs
decided they don't need a coach so they don't have one except they do ladies interim second
place team or at least they were and number three former Leafs coach Mike Babcock bears all
and by bears all we mean we're not really sure what Mike's talking about and his view in picture
of reality is different than yours shall we say should we say is that fair guys he's like an ex
that you have to see get out of here i'm so tired of talking about him and uh not today though
i'm not tired of talking about him today no no because i held back on tweeting about it you
didn't say anything i was a very good boy i watched one snippet and i was like oh okay that's
enough that's enough i'm gonna watch it on the show with adam and jesse and we're gonna freak
out together i can tell i'm gonna hate it adam do you have the most important thing of the day
on that list uh most important thing of the day um i'm not sure do i i think it's important to
put it right at the front of the podcast that we're dropping something today oh it's widely
available right now you know what is put it at the front do you have the screen ready to share
no why because i i haven't prepared that what's wrong with you can you do it now i didn't know
that was something you were you talked about this and i wrote it in the group chat how dare you sir
not today today you guys are burying the lead i'm upset that adam didn't have it prepped and
forget that jesse didn't have it up and ready i didn't spoil it that's a good point today we
would like to announce officially sdpn.ca
so first off you're wondering what the sdpn is well the steve dangle podcast well it's just it
really doesn't even stand for that it's just sdpn we figured you know sdp sdpn nighttime is uh is
the parent company of sdp so that's what it is specifically they own us you know how we have a
podcast we like decided to super complicate it and like make a business and stuff yeah so it's
called sdpn and now we have a website with a podcast of one and it's great name s steve
dangle podcast ninnies which is us um we are the owners and it's fantastic we're excited uh but
that's right
does that mean I can put that in my
entrepreneur LinkedIn
you're Gary V
yelling at people to wake up at 4am
every day and never quit
on Monday
make your bed
have you guys heard of Eric Thomas by the way
yeah I know Eric Thomas
on Tuesday
I groan and it gets to Sunday
and I wake up and I groan on a Sunday
you're like eric we don't need to grind every day like we can we can take a day off let's take a
day off grinding who needs to grind that much i i always see those people and it's like well
if you don't want to do that then i guess you don't want to achieve what they have and i'm
like you're right i don't right i i don't they don't want to run eight triathlons this month
you know yeah no fuck that are you kidding me no way but you can't you can't tell me that post
malone got up and grinded every day i think i think some some people skip the grinding part
and make it anyway because they're just talented and i'm not expecting to be him either but uh
gary it's not the only way uh now so anyway we have a website sdpn.ca jesse what will you find
at sdpn.ca who by the way jesse did the whole thing himself yeah we got to launch our first
website which is a lot of fun took a little bit took a while but everything's kind of up and
running and if you experience any problems visiting the website please let us know no don't
tell us don't hit up the webmaster you know this is our first time doing this so there might be
some hiccups but you'll visit sdpn.ca today and you'll see a thing that says watch where you can
watch the podcast but you also see something next to it that says shop where you can shop
merch of the steve dangle podcast and we have so many fun things available for sale right away
first day with the with the launch of the website oh my god like what those things include the
classic jesse no mug the oh that's a classic the adams history corner merch line that just
that just launched if you want to go to university what better university than adams history corner
university so you can pick up like a beach bag that has the ah ahc logo on it you can get like
a shirt with a little embroidered so one thing big embroidered embroidered so this is so important
i'm going to take a pause uh from describing what's in the shop to mention that the things
in the shop are of quality it was so big for us to find um just a place where we get to get really
nice shirts so you'll see like champion gear like a lot of our hoodies you'll see a dangle navy hoodie
and it's champion branded it comes from the manufacturer and then the things the logos and
the stitching is embroidered like professionally from a great company that we trust and it looks
fantastic so you'll see that you'll see uh dad caps in there you'll see the the beach bag like
i mentioned a couple mugs adam has his own mug now very happy with this one it's we're calling
it the chug mug because it's adam and he's pointing at you and he says to chug i want you
you better chug that coffee when you're drinking it do you need motivation in the morning when
you're getting up at 4 a.m to grind there's adam right there help you grind and there's one
special thing that is currently uh sold out in the store it is the first ever steve dango podcast
hockey jersey oh it's not quite for sale yet yeah we're gonna have a launch date in the future but
that's coming very soon there'll be a portal it's not up available today but there'll be a portal
We could sign up for a newsletter and email alerts from the website.
That'll be coming in the next like two-ish weeks where you'll sign up, you'll enter your email.
And if you're interested in the jersey, just enter your email.
And then when that launches on launch day, you'll be one of the first people contacted.
And that'll be a limited edition run of about 50 jerseys.
They'll all be first edition and you'll get first edition jersey label on that as well.
We're excited about that.
It's stitched in, which is cool.
Yeah, that's coming in the next few weeks.
So watch out for that one.
Yeah, absolutely.
And here's the thing.
I like it. Jesse's got it labeled as
Tops, Bottoms, Headwear, Accessories
Limited Edition.
You can also buy Steve's book
too about the zoo. Steve's tour
through the Amazon.
Oh, Adam.
Through the Americas, through
Eurasia. We go all over
the place. It's amazing.
It's incredible.
There's Christopher Columbus
and then there's Steve.
Just two Italians
discovering the world.
best doing their best so yeah this is but this is very exciting like there's even a steve dangle
throw pillow which we love um so we're so excited about this obviously like you know um we will add
to the store as it happens um you know as we're able to kind of do that but this is a kind of a
work in in progress you're gonna see some more growth out of sdpn.ca in the future uh but for
now you get book you get you can watch and look at anything that you want here and also when we're
able to do live shows again there is a live tab but if you click on it it says we're in a pandemic
dot dot dot actually we will be doing live shows the goal has always been to do a tour but we
haven't been able to do one so you'll be able to buy tickets right from the site there we'll uh
we'll have it there and it'll be cool you'll see all the dates far more organized than in years
passed right and so like we had we had a show uh at kingston booked for april 4th last year
and i remember uh it was it i forget what bar it was but the uh it was the it was the house thing
and then it went up for sale i'm not even sure if it's still open the guys were so great though
and uh we said we would be back and that would be our first show when the pandemic ends so i'm
gonna reach back out to those guys and actually see if they're still around because it would be
amazing and i think what we'll do is we'll start to do like the plan is right now to you know wait
out the pandemic especially in canada we're taking our time with the vaccines so um it's probably
2022 before we're looking at any live shows again but as soon as we can we will and it'll start in
ontario but we're hoping to get through the states western canada western united states maybe one of
these days we can do a a euro trip i'd love to do that'd be cool one in england one in you know
the scandinavian countries and one in australia as well which is not europe but we would like to
do that so we're hoping to place in australia pretend it's our favorite make fun of the other
ones it'll be great hey melbourne how about sydney am i right bunch of idiots and then we'll go
to sydney and do the exact same thing love that as long as we do it in the month of january so i
can also take in the australian open while we are there that's a good i'd like a double double
vacation i think that's a great idea let's do that let's definitely do that let's do that yeah
um so in the meantime check out sdpn.ca for all of your jersey slash t-shirt needs we do want to
know how many people want these jerseys so definitely sign up there um and then we'll
kind of go from there like we're just playing it by ear we don't know how this works crash the site
yeah there you go that'd be cool at 4 a.m that better be when that i want to see traffic
spike at 4 a.m when you're grinding oh that's true because you're getting up at 4 a.m to
grind it's just what people normally do on the internet at 4 a.m is not what our site is for
so oh waking up or going to bed i wonder now wake up at 4 a.m but you can't go on the website
until 4.01 because you need to spend
that first minute making your bed.
Lazy piece of garbage.
Does he actually say to make your bed?
I don't think that's a Gary Vaynerchuk thing.
I think that's a other
motivational woo peddler.
I don't remember who it was.
Oh, man. Yeah.
If I just make my bed, shut up.
Go to our website.
If only I could make my bed.
Yeah.
Here's how you live your life.
yeah listen to that guy that's good that's where you should get your advice
well you know you know we got into a lot of trouble when we uh when we thought that what
was it what's his name the guy that was on joe rogan a million times and had the book
and the guy who almost died because yeah who had like a heart attack and was like no i must keep
running uh and then and he said sunscreen was for people who are soft what was his name anyway
when we when we when we laughed a little at the ridiculousness of that video i got so many dms
about people who were like that guy really inspired me which is fair he's an inspiring guy
a little foolhardy though too right good for you yeah no it's like whatever man i'm i'm inspired by
by crazy people as well it's all good uh you're thinking of uh mr goggins david goggins yes thank
you man and i think his book is called uh can't was it can't beat me or something like that yeah
And you know what?
I believe him.
You can't.
When you've got that sort of determination, there's nothing really that truly can stop you.
It's called Can't Hurt Me, Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds.
I'm going to read it.
I'll read it.
I'm not.
I'm sure I can pick something up.
Audiobook.
What the hell?
All right.
Now, let's get into Who Wore the Crown.
Jesse, Who Wore the Crown brought you by today?
This week's Who Wore the Crown is quite special.
because it comes from the Steve Dangle podcast Reddit page.
So this week it's sponsored by Rob.
And Rob wrote,
I want to sponsor the Who Wore the Crown segment.
I'm tired of all these high profile corporations
like the mute button and the right shoe
and stonks getting all the attention like always.
So I'm putting my money up.
I've donated, he donated to Sick Kids Foundation
and he'd like to see a bunch of people
will also in the Reddit page donate to SickKids.
So sincerely, some random dude on the internet
who would like something fun and awesome to happen.
So Adam, could you please read Rob's liner?
He donated and he would like to sponsor the segment.
Okay, well, Rob, thank you for writing up this liner for me.
I do really appreciate it.
And I'm definitely not doing this off the top of my head.
Rob, Rob wanted this.
Rob's getting this.
Who Wore the Crown is brought to you today by Rob.
Whenever you want to be a good guy, why not?
Why not?
Do what Rob did and donate to the SickKids Foundation and you can get your shout out on Who Wore the Crown.
Rob, today's sponsor of Who Wore the Crown.
What a wonderful idea.
Steve, who wore your crown last evening?
Well, you know, there's just so many candidates.
I mean, think of all the goal scorers.
You know, just all the ones who contributed.
You know what I'm talking about?
All those ones.
But if I had to pick just one.
i think i think
i think i would go with william kneelander get out of town how is that wow wow i think
well out of get out of town brave choice surely you don't mean his hometown of calgary alberta
canada true true good point i mean whomst would ask me uh i mean william kneelander
holm holmst um so least get scored on it's a little bit his fault but as i went over in my
lfr video i thought he was like maybe third most at fault and then ties the game against unbeatable
dave ridditch and scores the ot winner how do you not give it to william nylander i'm gonna give it
to him off the board wow that you know what it was a pick that nobody expected but it happened
and you know it's interesting steve i thought i was being hipster i thought it was being cool
i thought i was going off the board but then you went in and you took my pick
william nylander let's talk about william nylander for just a second two goals last night right
william nylander scores william nylander scores the way that no that anybody that doesn't like
william nylander says he never scores i know that was i could have awarded that probably a little
bit better but William Nylander scores a goal from inside literally David Rittich's mouth which
is incredible like he is on his knees he's taken several slaps at that puck he's right in the what
areas that's right the dirty areas that that pretty little Swede never goes to right and then
how does he score the overtime winner well he drives the net which is something he never does
no he always sticks to the outside that William Nylander the outside player who scored 30 plus
goals last year within four four or five feet of the net it's an insane stat and by the way he led
the league in that category so William Nylander you get my crown because you scored both times
the way that everybody says you never score but all you always do you needed the monkey off your
back it happened Willie's rolling again producer Jesse not producer Jesse for god's sakes I gotta
stop calling you that Jesse Blake can I uh can I back up from the mic one moment and just give a
loud woo for willie he's back baby william neilander all right let's go
so jesse back up from the mic like a rookie
first things first we need to give his full name william andrew michael jr neilander
Altilius
actually
is his real name.
It must be spoken on the day
that William Nylander is the only
goal scorer for the Toronto Maple Leafs
and he scores the OT winner and he scores
that beautiful goal from his knees in front of the net.
Full name must be said.
That is his name that's on his draft card.
Unbelievable. Name of a king.
Crown him. Crown his ass.
Second point.
If you want to crown Nylander, then crown him.
William Nylander, if you are a fan of any other team
that is not the Toronto Maple Leafs,
he is the leading scorer on your hockey team.
He would lead 42% of the teams in the NHL in scoring
if he was on the team.
Oh my God.
That's 13 different teams he would be the leading scorer on.
Don't tell me William Nylander isn't a great hockey player.
He showed up in the last two games.
He's got benched and he learned his lesson.
Everybody keeps saying he's the first guy in practice, last guy to leave.
His teammates love him.
What more could you want?
That's what you need, a guy who shows up in key moments, OT,
and a guy whose teammates love him.
William Nylander gets our crown back.
Even Steve Simmons was impressed.
I mean, some assembly required with the article today.
Was there an article today about it?
Oh, I haven't read it yet.
i probably wouldn't have read it anyway but no i also haven't read it yet i do have a personal
question for jesse but it's going to start with i got to bring steve on side with something here
steve have you ever said something that when it came out of your mouth and you saw jesse's face
face's reaction to it you were like probably i'm a little out of off base here uh all the time
whenever i'm not sure about something i'm like what does jesse think right a bit of a voice of
reason you know what i mean for sure also whenever whenever he smiles i'm like ah good stuff made
him laugh our big thing at virgin radio is if we've made jesse laugh we think we've been funny
like if in the in the morning and and uh he is the voice of reason in the studio because
uh typical performers we're a little up and down from time to time you know where is he
he sits on the throne like a roman emperor and has his thumb like this yes and we say something
and we're just waiting to see where it goes that's right i'd kill a killer by the way do you
want to hear a weird history fact adam's history corner when do i uh when he's doing that in the
gladiator usually if you go down that in the movie means kill him in real life if the emperor gave
the down signal that meant save him don't kill him why but they they changed it because they
thought that audiences would be confused by it i would have been yeah because this means no good
this means great so what does what did that mean in the olden days so in the olden days
let's say jesse and steve get into a fight and i'm the emperor okay and you're this is the coliseum
and jesse has steve pinned and he's looking up at the emperor do i kill him if i say i look at the
crowd and i'm gonna i'm gonna do what the crowd tells me to do so if the crowd's like kill him
i do a thumbs up kill him oh because you're agreeing with the crowd no no thumbs up means
kill thumbs down means safe why that's just the way it was ask them man go back in time it means
don't kill them as in don't like as in no no no okay okay yeah yeah yeah so anyway that's that's
that but i i do the reason i'm asking you doing this whole long thing about jesse steve oh right
there was a point a to make him uncomfortable b um when jesse gives you that look do you not feel
a little bit like i'm very exposed and vulnerable right now oh yes it's like immediately removing
all my clothes how do you feel wow that's that's pretty hot uh how do you feel true and or how do
you think willie felt when jesse stopped giving him the crown a couple weeks ago because that did
happen you know
if there was a person in the world
and there is one
who gives less of a hoot than
Jesse that's what they always say about Jesse
he doesn't give a hoot but if anyone
gave less of a hoot than Jesse
it'd be William Nylander
third place by the way is Alex
his brother
Jesse's sandwich right in the middle
they make up the Nylander triplets
what about his dad
oh no he
Nylander didn't give a shit.
You should see some of the contract negotiations that guy did.
Yeah, didn't he just get a better offer and go, bye?
Yeah, he signed the contract with the Oilers,
and you've got 24 hours to rip it up.
And the Rangers came in and said, we'll offer you more.
And he went, see you later.
I'm taking advantage of that.
Yeah, it's crazy.
I would say that I think William Nylander might have been affected by Jesse
because there's only so long any of us can go without Jesse's love.
And Jesse, it must have been hard for you.
You broke your own streak
And people don't even realize it
There was a couple of people who were like
He gives it to him every episode
I'm like, I don't think you've been paying close enough attention
It really was like a breakup
Yeah, it was
It was like rehashing Liza and David all over again
It was like
You never want to relive painful memories
But it felt like that
But they were amicable
They were amicable
You guys had to split up
And then it was like, go to him
liza was so big back then compared to him and he is now so much bigger than liza he's he is thriving
yeah madison beer comes to it comes to his house and opens beer bottles with her teeth it's crazy
i know who that is that's a person oh steve you don't know madison beer i'm positive i've heard
of her charlie de mello demelia uh yes emilio i know enough about her that i know you said it
wrong yeah there you go there you go what was the one i didn't know uh jack um oh jack harlow when
And you looked exactly like him with your hair.
I know him too.
Anyway, today's Who Wore the Crown brought to you by Rob.

You get to be the official sponsor of that particular episode.
rob thank you for coming up with such an incredible idea gentlemen i got a question
which montreal citizen would like to line up first to eat the crow
who do we pay oh oh adam who is anybody is anybody over the world who well okay but you know i mean i
that's fair that's fair could be some toronto living montreal fan i just want to say um a
collective eat this crow to all of you okay now i am not celebrating next podcast and bring it
honestly i wish that there were games i would drive to the bell center this weekend and start
handing out crows to montreal canadians fans like fake ones like rubber crows or something yeah
adam's i am up red dead redemption 2 tonight listen i think i might have celebrated a little
too much because i feel like here's the thing when claude julian lost his job i wasn't celebrating
cloud julian losing his job i was dunking on all the habs fans who got pumped after seven games
four of which were against the canucks about how great this team was wasn't just habs fans
it's a lot of folks are art listen d'artagnan cj fourth fourth member of the podcast he was
he called them a juggernaut he called them a juggernaut and said they're not slowing down
they did they did now the victory dance happened yesterday i don't want to get too crazy on it
today because i really don't know where there is to go with this honestly other than the montreal
canadians are well underperforming themselves and as i said in the off season my issue with
the montreal canadians is the same issue we saw with the leafs the reason i didn't want to crown
them early is because we've seen this movie before from teams leaf teams that should have
been awesome but weren't and that is because you can throw a bunch of players in the room
young players good players that are that are you know long-time nhl vets it takes a while to gel
and you got to have a coach with the right system that's going to fit them now i do want to get into
the specific reasons why cloud julian was fired in a second but first you know when we break down
the off season that mark bergman had and he spent a ton of money you know the molson family's doing
okay so you know canadians can do that but no other nhl team is spending that kind of money
this offseason i've heard of their products mark bergevin
i'm niche very funny mark bergevin deserves credit for and i saw elite fans like dancing on
what he did this offseason i have to tell you i think he had a very good offseason do i think
do I think the Josh Anderson contract's great beyond year four? No, because I've seen it before
with David Clarkson, which didn't even last one year. Do I think that Tyler Toffoli is going to
shoot 20% for the rest of the year? No, I don't think Tyler Toffoli's good, but they got him at
a discount and for four years in a place that frankly has trouble signing unrestricted free
agents because of the high tax rate. And look at that. Tyler Toffoli sign, that's really good.
Nick Suzuki's a good player. Yes, very cocky. And Yemi's a good player. And by good player,
I mean, they're on their way up.
Nick Suzuki's going to be a star, but he's not a star yet.
And what I was saying in the offseason, but as I cautioned everybody,
and that's all I did, just be careful when you don't have game-breaking talent
fully developed yet, because we saw that.
Leaf fans have seen this movie.
We know.
That's the term.
That's game-breaking.
That's the term.
There is not a person on that roster who is currently a game-breaker,
except for Carey Price.
but Carey Price doesn't score goals.
No.
And so the issue becomes
if you're going to score by committee,
which the Habs have tried to do
for years and years and years,
you are going to dry up.
Hell, the Leafs have a game-breaking scoring talent
and they dry up.
It's something that happens.
But it seems as though
there's a lot more issue here.
I mean, we're 30% or 33% or whatever
into the season.
So a third of the way in,
Marc Bergevin says we need to make a change.
why cloud julian because he trained he'd done everything else for cloud julian and they were
still struggling so steve what do you think it was about claude's philosophy about his effect
on the players what was it that was really holding the canadians back that would push
mark berger to make a move like this i don't know if it was hold them back i think uh just
sometimes coaches get maxed out it's like what i was talking about with john tortorella um and he's
the blue jackets are still fine but like he has a shelf life players get tired of them
um and claude julian he might be the stale voice in the room here um it obviously wasn't working
out and this is heartless but i wonder if it's part of the equation the montreal canadians
were not good last year they were terrible they were 24th but they managed to squeak into this
unprecedented playoff bubble situation and claude julian of no fault of his own
uh has to leave the bubble and go to hospital and he does not return to the bubble that's
obviously not his fault and he shouldn't be punished for that but when the habs had their
success there the habs got to peek behind the veil they got to have a little gander at something
they were probably already at least considering in the back of their mind which is because if
that season ends and they just play 82 games and finish 24th and they don't get any of that glory
there in the bubble then they're just a crap team that's it that's the end of the story right but
they saw how good they could be and then they start the season you know we we talk about the
beginning of the season it's not necessarily an accurate representation of what your team is
because coaches don't have a chance to really put a saddle on the mustang you know what i mean
yep they it's everyone's just running wild it's a lot of high skill stuff and the habs had a really
good start and then as the season progresses goal scoring gradually goes down because everyone sort
of figures out their defense and one of the teams that suffered the most is montreal
i think they were just done they were just done with claude julian i loved that point you brought
that up in our little group chat last night and it's like the habs did their best when he
wasn't the coach and remember they had that five nothing game the day that he went to hospital
Big emotional game.
I feel like that was against Pittsburgh, but it might have been Philly.
But all the same, it was an impressive, impressive way to play.
And I think that's what really last, you know, last fall put that Canadians on the map in terms of people's like, oh, there might actually be something bubbling here.
And, you know, you're right to think that at that point, because that was pretty impressive.
It was amazing.
The fact that they beat Sidney Crosby and played really hard against Philly, they're just sort of outmatched.
um and i've i've wondered this because i've never had coaches really i mean you know my little my
little kid uh sports growing up whatever but like at the professional level at what point
do professional athletes like hear a coach that they've had for four years for example and go
okay no i know how to do those things though i already know how to do those things yeah like
can you tell me something else and coaches do evolve but a lot of them rely on the same tricks
will the new habs after you know some time know how to do all those things that they did under
claude julian and now pick up some new toys you know what i knew new skills new things that they
do yeah do you guys think mark bergevin's out of time like does he have any more moves i don't i
know his record in front of me as
first time with the Habs, but it hasn't been
the most impressive resume. No.
Carey Price has now had six head coaches?
Is it four or six?
I don't think it's up to six.
Yeah, I think it's like five?
Price has been the goalie for longer
than Bergevin's been the GM.
Yeah. So
here's the issue.
In a vacuum, like I look
at this offseason, Edmondson
we didn't love, but it didn't cost him
anything, and he's been fine. Sorry, it's
price's sixth head coach thank you to mike steve it is yeah to me yesterday wow awesome awesome
wow so edmonton pennies on the dollar jake allen pennies on the dollar and they found a way to
extend him for less than he was making if i'm not mistaken yes then uh there's toffoli you know
everyone oh they can't attract free agent talent and they do there they make a real nifty trade
with josh anderson that contract's probably gonna suck doesn't suck yet he's had an abundance of
draft picks and he's drafted really well and the patcher ready deal you know controversial
nails it he nailed it he didn't the thomas tatar deal like where he got tatar great was that part
of the patch yeah yeah he was it was i think it was a nick suzuki a pick and tatar yeah and tatar
led the team in scoring last year with 61 points i think and then you look at the domey deal like
he won the domey deal both of them right both one both domey yeah yeah to get a man to trade
him away you know what i mean he but then they get on the ice and they're that right
you know what i mean like the amount of stuff that he wins
i'm like why are you still but there's still no game-breaking talent where are your where's
your playoff resume well they did there there were some i mean yeah even the shea weber trade was a
i mean they won the gallagher contract too yeah take a gander at the gallagher contract that
thing's ridiculous the shea weber has worked out for him he gets ben charotte for like nothing and
he's up on the top to get to know right like you know the to know the to know romanov trade
for Fleischman and Weiss.
He's made the team better,
but at what point do your accomplishments matter
and the fact that this is now head coach number three?
Now, I'm going to say this.
Marc Bergevin is keeping his job
and he's not going anywhere.
He's got a great relationship with Jeff Molson.
He signed a seven-year extension,
i think five years ago we all thought that jeff molson was nuts but i think it goes till the end
of next year and um guys uh he's not going anywhere and you got to look at that resume
in as a whole he's winning most of those deals uh but they i think that this is a team on the rise
who um i i don't the way i see the montreal canadians is this you you need a head coach
that's going to play the system that montreal needs to play to win right they're going to have
to be uh uh heavy on the offense cycle cycle cycle very fast and they got to be a little bit
more how do i say this a little more crisp on the passes and stuff you know what i mean like i know
that seems like a basic thing but i want to see more zip in the in the puck movement because they
have the skill to do it but you saw a little bit more it seemed like a bit more of a like it
reminded me of watching the flintstones like bam bam like when they were playing do you know what
i mean it was just i feel like they can play a little bit more finesse game but with guys like
josh anderson in the lineup you're still going to throw some hits and i think that the montreal
canadians are team on the rise i think bergevin's job's safe look at that roster i mean most teams
in the nhl be like yeah i will take that for sure suzuki and cock and yemi are both going to take
strides on the automatically better there and you know like they've still they have kale flurry and
they've got a ton of great prospects one of the best systems in the league do they not
uh they've done they've drafted really well so there's there's a lot a lot to love about the
Montreal Canadiens we'll see what coach Ducharme is able to do uh very very interesting and I think
is Alex Burrows too an assistant coach yeah I was surprised to see Kirk Muller go the one thing I'll
say is this we you know hockey and thinking outside of the box and all that I know keeping
the same guy that you've had since 2012 doesn't seem like thinking outside of the box but
what I just said I'm like I like the vast majority of the things that GM has done
and then i go but you know he's had to fire a couple coaches and he should get fired too
because i don't know you're just kind of supposed to after enough coaches that's dumb
that's that that whole uh all that gm he's used his bullet you know that's it oh he's used his
bullet that was dumb do you like the job he's doing i do if i'm a habs fan i like the job he's
doing yeah and i i get the questions right anytime that there's a failure on a level below you gotta
look at the guy that hired him right there that's totally fine but i think mark bergevin did his job
especially this offseason they had a big offseason they did great they got two young centers on the
way up i can't imagine why philip to know his name isn't any trade rumors at all because they need to
hang on to him as well they've done really really really well um the montreal canadians are a good
hockey team they're going to make the playoffs this year it's time for a change and uh i just
as i said then and as i say now it takes a while for teams to gel it really really does you're
going to see a lot of failures first and that doesn't mean that the montreal canadians don't
outperform the leafs in the playoffs because god knows the leafs are super good at underperforming
in the playoffs i get it but what i'm saying right now is i don't think they're they're going to win
the regular season division i think that's pretty clear and i'm i meant it at the beginning of the
season and i mean it now they need more time and they'll get it and they're going to be very very
strong for a lot of years to come fair can you also give the people what they want to hear
what they want to hear just a big emphatic i was right oh i was right
uh heal adam eat this crow there you go thank you i like it also um uh uh i you know watching
the leaf game last night it was a little bit um it's a little bit funny and i tweeted this
uh we'll do a little bit on the leaf game before we get to babcock
i'm a little i'm not sure how to feel about this particular situation let's hope you guys can help
me out with this okay so the first 19 games i'm like wow leafs look really good barabanov does not
lat the last two nights barabanov's looked amazing like who is this guy
and leafs have looked not good so is it is it that barabanov's better
recently got some confidence or is that the leafs around him haven't looked as good
oh he is absolutely playing for his nhl life and he's he's earning it what a player that's
there's a player there yeah and and he has until like frankly I'm surprised they left him in and
took Patan out because based on the way they've played this season I don't know that he earns
that I think that's just Keefe sort of throwing him a bone there but he has until the Leafs decide
Alex Kalchenyuk is ready basically or until Thornton comes back or until basically the next
game is not guaranteed for him travis boyd can be fairly confident he's getting in next game
yes uh barabanov your next nhl game and that includes last night could be your last like
always could be and you'll get could be a wave for a mutual contract termination could be a wave
to see if you'll you'll go to go to another team could be a trade he's he's fighting for his nhl
life and i'm starting to feel like i finally know him like i was saying like he's one of the
only players in a leaf that's worn a leaf uniform this year where i go i don't even know you and
it's not it's not a criticism necessarily i mean you do want to make a name for yourself but i like
he played so little i didn't even know who he was now i know him as like a relentless puck pursuer
he's feisty he does have some skills he's had at least two or three really really glorious
scoring chances this year that he just wasn't quite able to finish i mean him and every other
leaf not named william nylander against dave ridditch um but in terms of the least not looking
very good adam i disagree so i think they played what so hold on so let me let me qualify that
sure last the first game against the flames and these two games that was not good it wasn't the
best fair i agree with you there yeah and i just said last week and then last night i'm talking
about the first before the third period where they really took off and they did but it was shots
were kind of especially in the first period didn't the flames have them like have them on the ropes
a little bit in the shot department and the scoring chance department it wasn't great and
there might have been for a little while but i went through the video today the leafs outshot
them in every period last night including 12 to 3 in the third which was the only one the flame
scored in uh somehow it's it's absolutely ridiculous even though i i think we're confusing
the leafs not being good and their power play not being good they went 0 for 11 for the first time
in a very long time i don't even know dating back to last season when the they had the timer on and
it was just like leafs power play has a score in this amount of time you're just clicking and it's
at like 20 minutes or something like that sports just has a ticker going it was brutal to watch
that's one of the best power plays in the league it was number one for the whole beginning of the
season until this little streak i can't be now not now up until like this run but yeah they have
they had a goofy power play though to start the year they did like it was the percentage was
insane but five on five through two games they drew 11 calls uh on the flames to like to me
that's a team that's doing good things at five on five even the loaded up line in the first game
that a lot of us didn't like each player drew a penalty at five on five that means they're doing
good things they've got the puck they've got the damn puck um they just i don't know i don't know
what the what spell the flames penalty kill had on the leafs or dave riddich had um god what a
weird combination like what a dave riddich and alexander georgiev like the leafs just die at
the feet of one a goalies yeah it was interesting too to hear i forget who it was was it anson
carter in the uh in the intermission who's awesome by the way holy crap where's he been
uh he was he talking about um oh i don't subscribe to that that's probably why i didn't know that
um the uh what was it the when he's talking about that that rich worked with a guy who helped
helped him work on his focus during this during the off season and i thought that was interesting
because you know when you are performing at a high level in anything i'm talking about performing
i'm talking about you know you have to be focused for a long period of time people that
that have to like focus like that imagine like a paramedic you gotta focus to be a paramedic right
you're focused that's a you're in there if you lose focus for a second that it's life or death
you're not checking your phone right in sports terms not life or death but life or death in
sports terms you know you got to be right on the money if you're a goalie all the time and think
about how long that is you know 60 minutes of hockey three hours of your life every time you
get in there that's a real that's a real mental gymnastics most people cannot do that and even
the players don't have to do that you want something wild yeah no toronto maple leaf
not named william nylander scored on dave redditch in 2020 whoa uh the last leaf not named nylander
to score on redditch was in a 4-2 loss um it was mitch marner in the second period of a game on
december 12 2019 and it was assisted by cody cc he and and and the leafs uh that was a really good
game they were out shooting the hell out of the flames they had a random boom boom boom at the
beginning of the third period if you remember uh and they felt for whatever reason this guy just
he gets it he's yep i it's so he was oh and three heading into this two game series
it makes no sense but he's unreal and he deserved the win like he really did if we're talking about
a guy that should have stole the game at state british yeah yeah flames did the so i i do want
to ask this too um how much how much do you put into the power play struggling the last couple
of games so what i mean by that is you know the leafs one of the big issues in the past
especially under mike babcock who we will get to in a second um one of the big issues was they
never adjusted so they'd come out roaring in the first 20 games and then people would figure them
out and they'd be like no we're just going to hammer this system over and over and over again
and by the time game 82 rolls around you know us inside and out and boston's going to clobber us
and they never really fully clobbered the leafs it was pretty close but the reality and by the way
i just want to throw that out there for anybody that wasn't paying attention the two times that
austin did beat us recently was close um but i do i do wonder like is it a five game stretch where
you go okay after five games we scored one power play goal time to switch it up or is it a 10 game
thing because it can't be two but that was pretty distressing was it not yeah i think it's i think
it's power play to power play and what drove me nuts because i was they they changed up the
personnel for a while it wasn't until one of the last power plays that they really divvied it up
um but they looked a lot like in terms of makeup they look like the leafs top unit from last year
now they scored a bunch of goals their percentage wasn't actually that bad but what was the number
one criticism people talk about the stupid drop pass well why do people need the stupid drop pass
because they never gained entry because they couldn't gain entry and that was the leafs
problem against calgary you can't say uh you know oh they just weren't bearing their chances they
didn't get any because they couldn't get in the zone right what the leafs have done such a good
job in the power play uh this year what is when the puck is in uh it's going in your net like once
it crosses that blue line and they set up you're screwed you're in a world of hurt austin matthews
is either going to rip a wrister he's going to one-time it mitch marner can one-time it now
you have a combination of wayne simmons and joe thornton and william nylander and john tavaris
who can just bang it in down low zach hyman can fill in and that role sometimes
travis boyd got a power play goal his first career power play goal um you know tj brody is very good
at his job miko letton and uh morgan riley it's so versatile and i really like the even splitting
of those two power plays can i make an excuse for the leafs guinea i apologize jesse blake
leafs apologist speaking um how much does their struggles over the last what is it like
six five games ish have to do with all of the injuries they've had because with all the guys
going down they've kept having to switch around the power play especially with wayne simmons going
down early that was early still but um just like all the little injuries too and they had so many
guys come in and out of the power play how much has that affected it it definitely affects it
obviously i mean they were using jimmy vc you know what i mean even boyd like that's not an
ideal option there's a reason it's boyd's first power play goal shouldn't be on the power play
That dude's on your fourth line, and then there's Vesey who probably should.
I got to say, you said Barabanov's fighting for his life.
I think one James Vesey, if the play doesn't pick up
when Simmons and Thornton are back and Robertson's back,
I can't see where he fits in the lineup.
Yeah, yeah, he's really...
Been a letdown. It's too bad.
He's been a letdown, and it's not even...
Now, what did I say about the Vancouver Canucks of 2011?
There's nothing to complain about,
So they find someone to complain about.
And ours is Jimmy Vesey.
Like he, the Leafs over the last forever have had bad players.
Vesey's not even bad.
It's not bad.
He's just kind of there.
You know what I mean?
He needs to find his thing.
He's an effective enough penalty killer.
He can skate.
It's just nothing really happens positively or negatively,
except for that penalty that was kind of boneheaded in the first there.
um but you know as as much as i want to microanalyze the leafs power play i think you
just got to give the flames their props they did a really really really good job of uh holding the
leafs at their own blue line and frustrating the hell out of them that's it now with that we'll
leave kind of last night's game what is the next game you guys know i'm paying attention i think
it's saturday and i i have no idea who it's against i don't even look anymore like this
season's gone so fast man it's bizarre i i was thinking i was saying that the other day to
somebody they're like you know there's a leaf game tonight i'm like there is like and it's
not because i wouldn't have caught it eventually but i was just like i i so it's what's that
oilers oh that'll be a big matchup oilers are seven and one since i called them mediocre as
i keep hearing from oiler fans in my messages don't worry you guys will fall back to earth
too it's okay wow wow the leafs are this is a big little stretch a big little stretch wow god i'm
so canadian this is a big stretch here um they got three straight in edmonton they got a back-to-back
with travel for the first time this season i think where they and after the third game against
edmonton they play vancouver for two and it's not we the next leaf home game is march 9th
that's a long time that is a long time where they finally play the jets again they got three
straight against them that will not be a fun series by the way that's that's they're gonna
The Jets are going to try to make the Leafs hurt.
You talk about a stretch where your season could get squirrely fast.
You got the red-hot Oilers.
Your confidence gets shot, and all of a sudden,
you lose one or two to the Canucks.
And then you got the Jets, who are a top-three team in this division.
And you got to play Connor Hellebuck.
It's crazy.
We're going to find out what the Leafs are made of.
Yep.
Now, I quickly – I ran this by Dom LeCision,
and I think this is an important thing.
There's been a lot of talk about this being the weakest division.
And I, Jesse brought it up and there've been other people who I've talked to over text.
Like, yeah, like, please are good.
But like, I don't really believe it.
And these are Leaf fans because Leaf fans are the most, like, we have no faith in this
team ever.
And, and so I said to Dom, like, listen, you're smart.
I'm not.
Tell me if there's any statistical reason why the North division is, is, or is not better
than the rest of the league is it's any different at all and here's what dom said to me uh he said
people think bad defense equals a bad team no one is saying the north is the best offensive
division in hockey he said it's hard to say with any real certainty which division is the best but
he suggested that maybe it's you may not have those defensively smothering teams like dallas
but you do have some of the best offensive power in the entire league in this division
and you're seeing that with uh Marner Matthews McDavid Dreisaitl being at the top four of NHL
scoring right now and so there are it's just a division with different strengths you know
obviously there's going to be some sort of mathematical equation that comes up that shows
one way or the other and I guess we'll find out in the playoffs but don't count the north division
out quite yet I don't think they're as bad as you think they are uh the Jets certainly don't feel
that way the Oilers certainly don't feel that way the Leafs and the Canadians don't feel that way
they're performing well and you got to remember you've got the league's leading score heart
trophy uh vesna winner all in this division and all of these teams have made the playoffs
all of these teams have made the playoffs in the last three years well and you know what's
interesting is because you can prepare for the playoffs all you want but ultimately you got to
play your division the most even when it's not 10 times in a season like this year the atlantic
was speedy and i'm talking about last year's atlantic speedy and annoying yep there's lots
of nuisances in the atlantic lots of speed lots of skill the metro was uh very intense
i would say if that makes sense then the central got a little heavier the further you go west and
then the pacific division is just heavy so really it's a division you got to survive i don't know
if it's really that anymore because it's kind of fallen off a little bit in terms of quality but
you know part of the reason some of those teams struggle like the kings is they're a little bit
too heavy maybe canada's identity is just high intensity scoring and think of how weird it is
because most divisions in this season aren't actually that different from what they were
except for canada that spans an entire country that is a six and a half hour flight across
yeah it's it's uh it's different it's very different so like it's got to be a weird i
imagine it was weird for the leafs looking west going well we didn't really build our team for
that and for like the canucks for example looking east and going well we didn't really build our
team for that you know what i mean because that's not who we build our team to be mediocre in a bad
division said the canucks that's it's not who those teams built uh you know lock guys up to
contracts it's not who they expected to play really yeah yeah and i i dom also said he thinks
personally that the east is probably the worst division but i like if i were to look at um
they're all sort of like
I mean there's there's have and have
nots everywhere I think you know
what I mean like the central
is the wonkiest like people are
crowning Chicago
and Florida right
how about it's the weird
like you know how we talk about the beginning
of the season is unpredictable
and no team gets into a flow
who in the central has gotten into a flow
I'm just looking at that well because
there was the COVID stuff yes
um and west is the same dallas has still only played 14 games come on chicago surprises that
many yeah yeah yeah and dallas is not last in their division despite the fact that detroit
has played 21 and nashville played 18 they still have less points nashville is bad uh detroit
um okay i'd just like to point out as well that i'm happy that also i don't want to talk because
they're testing the fire alarm in my building and it's been going off occasionally so i've been on
mute here for god's sakes oh it's just it's been ridiculous um also now that i know that the
american teams don't have to play each other they just still play in their division like the north
division then what is the argument here you know just it's just an easy narrative it's an easy
it's just easy and steve hates that word narrative but it's an easy thing to say
no it works here it's and also it's so canadian like we can't compliment ourselves canada canadians
are not allowed to compliment themselves every time an american celebrity comes up so what do
you think of canada do you like it i hope you like it we are like that and we are like that
we cut the uh we cut the flower that goes too high or that grows too high that that or what's
the rose that grows too high yeah every every canadian that does well we're like screw that
fucking guy yeah amongst canadians were like go leafs were the best and then oh gosh the bruins
and lightning are good no but like the alignment of teams and how they play and how they perform
during the regular season it's all it's random it's random luck and the fact that they build
the schedules to be balanced like that's that's the only thing you can do to uh even the playing
field but otherwise you don't know how a team is going to perform it's still not balanced at all
it's balanced in terms of who you play it's not balanced at all in terms of circumstance
yeah police had 14 back-to-back scheduled last year the Leafs played the Habs I think it was
four times on a Saturday night three of them were back on the second half of back-to-back with travel
against someone else what i think that's going to change also i think the um i think this this i i
actually think it is and i think the players association's talking about the owners are
talking but think about this if if the league were to just play like three game sets or two game sets
that were not back-to-back nights not only is it cost less because just the air travel goes down
by like a third western teams the whole thing about western teams is the travel why do you need
to travel every night why can't you play three games in a row against each other why not baseball
does it smart like i don't like i've never understood this like well we got to play this
and jump on a plane and be somewhere else what does it matter so like it really doesn't right
and i think the interdivisional play that the nhl has tried so hard to shoehorn into the playoffs
make it happen during the regular season man like that's how you get teams to hate each other
play each other a lot and don't travel so much you don't need to and also like it's a pr win
yeah we are a green league we don't travel as much as we need to yeah i think in like five years or
whenever we're looking back at this little era i think like um double headers or staying in your
own city to play the other team is going to be a holdover from covid that exists in in the nba and
nhl specifically because those and it's a good idea those are the two leagues that have the idea
right now because it's necessary for travel but i think going forward it just makes too much sense
it's easier on the body you're not catching as many flights and it's easier on just planning
in terms of the schedule you play two nights here you know it just makes sense the mlb uh uh yeah
and longer at home with your family too yet longer away but also longer at home more quality time who
who doesn't want that yeah uh so anyway um let's get into mike babcock jesse is the alarm off in
your building are you okay i think so it hasn't gone off in like the last two minutes so they
might be done the test i always love that when they come over the last week like
half an hour it's gonna be half an hour get up that's literally what happened i don't know if
anybody heard is there any reason why they can't get an intercom system in 2021 to work like why
does that always have to be 20 it's 2 a.m get up get the fuck up get out of bed get out we're
we're testing the alarm get up uh you know what i mean like it's just install a good intercom
what's the problem it's not like speakers are hard to come by you know i i just haven't had
this problem i know in oshawa i just you know it's funny no i was just discussing that yesterday
while getting my haircut um oh sorry sorry go term region we're in the gray zone no we're not
no we're not even in the gray zone we are in lockdown my friend we're in the lockdown zone
for anybody doesn't know what we're talking about we have a weird color-coded system here um green
does mean go but red is not even the worst um there's there's like blue and gray and then
lockdown so we're in lockdown and then we're just trying to get to gray so we can we can go out and
buy something from a local shop anyway bonnie um a local shop yeah a little mom and pop called
costco so i'm hoping we get to the red zone because bonnie the mayor of mississauga is
pleading for peel to go to the red zone after lockdown so the cromster all right um bonnie
monster monster across canada in a volvo destination vancouver turn left to leave
travel west through approaching continue toward
you've arrived adventure and comfort with volvo whether you prefer gas plug-in hybrid or fully
electric there's a volvo for everyone learn more at volvocars.ca the uh okay so let's get into
mike babcock so we had a request and this is going to be a very different type of video uh that we go
through and we used to do this a lot and then we lost the ability to do it with covet and now we
found that we can do it again we're going to go through the video of chris simpson who we freaking
love by the way who is the most positive person on the face of the earth truly and mike babcock
Chris Simpson, by the way, incredible journalist, incredible reporter, beyond reproach.
And I want to, for everybody that was criticizing Sportsnet yesterday for putting this feature on the air, it will be the most looked at thing on their website today.
Way to go, company man, Adam.
Just like with The Athletic, when Pierre Lebrun did his first initial interview with Mike Babcock, your job as the journalist is not to take a side or to put this person on trial.
It is to let them present their opinion.
Now, I've had, after LeBron and Chris Simpson,
and he was randomly on the Rod Peterson show as well.
I think I'm done with Mike.
Yeah, he was.
Good for him.
I'm kind of done with Mike Babcock's opinion at this point about Mike Babcock.
I don't think Mike Babcock's done with it, but he is doing interviews now.
He is talking to the press.
And in a word, I would say insufferable.
like i cannot believe some of the things that he's saying so shall we start from the beginning
of the interview jesse well and here just real quick um please yeah it's people are getting
mad at this and good that means you're media literate right yes i i i think there was a time
where this guy would get on his pulpit and he would say mike babcock's a great guy actually
and people will go oh mike babcock says he's a great guy so i believe him you know and now
with covid you've been at home for 11 months and you were raised on the internet and you're too
smart for that so congrats you're media literate you got it good for you this is a it's a five
minute clip do we want to play at all uh let's work our way through it and see where we go
all right i'll throw up a hand signal or something
i like this this is really good interlude whatever ready we are good to go when the
leafs let you go november 2019 was it shocking to you or did you see it coming no it wasn't
shocking to me i knew when lou left i was getting fired the bottom line is is i really believe it's
important that every general manager and every coach have their manager and their coach their
guy and that wasn't me and i have no problem with that whatsoever you know i have to ask you though
about some things all right first things first guys it was a i measured it's a year and a half
from when lou left to when mike babcock was fired a year and a half he got a full season
season and and and really the first 20 games i guess yeah he wouldn't kyle dubas can't fire
babcock no you think he gets the blessing from the board well no who is after that babcock to be the
the richest coach in hockey you think he gets the blessing if they're like second in the division
they sucked they were bad they were a bad hockey team and that's why he got fired and they were
playing a style that the the management group was saying please do not play this way please use
these players in a different way and he refused to do it well i mean adam do you have a boss
yes oh you have a boss yes her name's karen her name's karen and how often do you tell
karen to eat shit uh never oh weird i i disagree he says it daily no karen's fucking awesome you
wake up in the morning and he says i'm gonna put on my gary v turtleneck i'm gonna make my bed
tell my boss to fuck off go independent i'm just so surprised to hear jesse say that you tell her
to eat shit because as is often the case when you tell your employer to eat shit whether it's with
your words or actions you get shit canned so long this guy hey here's justin hall go fuck yourself
all right well here how about jason spencer go fuck yourself with that too all right well here
Try Nick Patel.
Go fuck yourself.
Hey, Mike, we're going to trade for Nick Jensen.
Oh, okay, I'll use Jake, but he's not right-handed,
so, you know, go half-fuck yourself.
Like, this dude thought he was the general manager,
and I think he was upset about it.
He had no respect for Kyle Dubas.
Did you hear the Jack Hahn story?
No.
So the Leafs were going to trade for – this is a Jack Hahn story.
Jack Hahn used to work for the Toronto Marlies.
That's right.
Yeah, who is Jack Hahn?
tell him tell him uh i forget his exact title i'll look him up on twitter real quick but he
uh used to work for the toronto marlies he's doing a lot of media work now
um and he's a very good follow former ahl and nhl toronto uh i tweet about hockey
tactics and player development and how do you follow him what's his what's his account
j-h-a-n so j-hon h-k-y basically j-hon hockey so jack hon relayed a story that the leafs were
about to acquire nick jensen uh and this would have been a puck moving defenseman at the time
which they really needed which would have been i think 2018 or 2019 he was uh it was 28 it was
it was the it was the 2019 early 2019 uh when they went out and acquired jake muzza
and what they wanted was a mobile puck moving third pair with travis dermot travis on the left
jensen on the right according to jack hon uh mike babcock told kyle dubas okay you can go
acquire nick jensen but i'll be sitting travis dermot but we want mike a puck moving nope i'll
be sitting or i'll be sitting travis turner i mean so this is this is like i know i know i mean
no it's the coach's job to set the lineup no it's the coach's job to how about in most other
universes in the real world if your boss tells you to do something you fucking do it
unless you're breaking the law i've been watching a lot of suits
but like i i okay yeah i'll get this guy but i'm gonna sit dermot well no i told i'm acquiring this
player to play with travis dermot no how do you not want to fire that guy and also who else would
i was trying to figure out what the leafs defense at the time looked like who was on the team
uh when was this this was gardner muzzin riley gardner had like just a terrible back injury at
that point yeah I remember that I think was it was it was that Hainsey's last season so he would
have been playing up with Riley yeah who was it was it Polak and Dermott or was that Polak's first
year gone like who was playing on the third line I think it was Polak Ganoff like who else was there
oh Jesus played was that the year where like Babcock kicking and screaming oh you know what
maybe it wasn't Polak and it was Oja Ganoff what year do you guys want the lineup from 1819 I'm
looking at it right now was that the year uh kicking and screaming he had the ozheganov hall
so he had dermot gardner hainsey hall so hauled it barely played marincin muzzin ozheganov riley
rosen zeitzev so zeitzev would have been playing uh and i think he was hurt too
i i just yeah but none of that matters here i'm telling you this is what you should do
uh no so i knew i was getting fired like when i got myself fired do you see how he very subtly
puts the onus on dubas like okay keith is dubas's guy we all knew that we all knew that but like i
said he cannot fire babcock if the team's doing well what team in first place does that no one
it's happened like a small handful of times and every time it happens we're like what
and it's the panthers and we talk about it for several years you know what i mean
mm-hmm babcock undercut dubas at every turn he could every turn he could
and and you know when we had sean fitzgerald on we talked about how he is unwavering and you know
there is something has his own accent yeah has his own accent which is wild and you have to go
back and listen to that episode but uh where i was going with that it listen there is something
to believing in yourself there is something to being headstrong but when you don't listen to
anybody else you're an asshole and assholes get fired this isn't a shock i can't believe we're
only a minute in keep going keep going because are we we're never gonna be able to do this we're
gonna get back to it no let's get back to it let's do it all right we are 43 seconds in like
half of that was steve i think you should let you let him play the clip okay okay let's keep going
okay things that came out after you left the leaf so i want to give you a chance to clear the air
just some of the tactics that you use by the way so we heard about the mitch marner incident can
you explain what happened there yeah that's not you know what happened i was in a tree stand
and uh hunting on my farm in ohio and i get this thing and i said yeah i apologize for that but i
didn't know the story wasn't right mitch was in a time that it wasn't going quite as good he was in
my office and i said rank yourself on that work ethic list and he did and there was nothing wrong
of our conversation and Mitch Marner played great for Mike Babcock I can't complain one bit it was
unbelievable so then what happened though is I brought in and I think it was Bozy and it was
Bozak but I left the Mitch Marner thing on the table and then I referred to it and as soon as I
did it I knew I had done the wrong thing I walked out after talking to Bozy and I said to Mitch
this is what I've done I've screwed you uh it was no intent on my part you want me to deal with him
front of the team right and i shouldn't ask them that i should have just done it was it wrong yes
was it my fault a hundred percent do i own that yeah but if you think it's a tactic that he's a
guy or something that's the craziest thing ever we try to make these players the best we could
our intention is always good do we do things wrong sometimes a hundred percent i have to ask you have
to go a little okay okay so here we go again so she asked him about it directly so the fact that
he's talking about it is you know she asked him a question and people had it wrong so i've heard
that story enough times we didn't have it no we didn't we didn't have it wrong the only thing and
it is an important distinction is from what we heard the first time to now is babcock according
to babcock offered to rectify it right i don't think he's a liar i will say that i think he's
insufferable i don't think he's a liar so we offered to rectify it but like can you undo that
the problem was that marner was now under this pressure with the veterans of the team
right this this was always the problem the other thing this ignores it ignores two very important
things you guys remember the epic show that we had with cj after leafs lost to boston in 2019
yeah who wanted babcock fired right then and there steve me why because he was a mean guy
who made mitch marner write a list no none of us knew anything about that it was because he was not
the right coach for that team babcock wasn't fired because of the stupid list
he wasn't it wasn't fired because of the stupid list the other thing is the mitch marner list
thing strikes me as a i think it's been identified as a soft target because not everyone's on board
with it not everyone is on board with the idea that it is bad even you know not saying it's us
i'm just saying a lot of people ah it's not that bad what he did johan franzen go look up chris
chelios talking about what that freaking guy did to johan franzen better yet go up look and look up
what johan franzen said mike babcock did to johan franzen the medano thing tip of the iceberg and
i've heard so many stories that and like steve tell him i can't do that to the people who told me
but i've heard so many stories it's not just that and it's not even that they're the worst
thing in the world it's that it's the tip of the iceberg yeah yeah we've been hearing stories for a
while so you ever stub your toe once you ever stub your toe 50 times consecutively you know
what i mean one toe stub in a nutshell is fine let's keep going jess further back your time in
detroit because again then things come out right and johan franzen so he was quoted in a swedish
newspaper saying mike babcock great coach a terrible person a bully yeah when you think
back to some of the tactics you used with him do you think you went too far i thought we had a
really good relationship now did things not go as good at times absolutely did i ever in my mind
try to bully anybody that is the craziest thing i ever heard of now i also though didn't even know
what mental health was so anytime someone whether they work for you whether you're in a relationship
with feels that you're wrong you never want to cross the line and when you do you want to own it
and if you do you should own it and but if you didn't you shouldn't own that either did you
reach out to france and then after hearing okay so you've apologized you've no i reached out to
him he didn't get back to me in saying that why i've coached 34 years let's go 20 guys let's do
the math lots of players i've coached olympic teams i've changed goalies i've coached veteran
teams in the stanley cup final and scratch guys you've made people mad that's reality you know
i've coached a lot of teams and had a lot of success and good people have hired me i didn't
have a zoom meeting with brian murray before i went to anaheim i went to detroit jimmy no was
my gm at the 04 world championship they hired me steve eiserman played or played for me and
and worked with me four years and he hired me for two olympics brennan shannon hired me after
play for me some of this the smell test doesn't add up so you dispute some of the things that
have come out about non-answer he didn't answer her question yes but i also did you go too far
that was the question you guys to edit this stuff uh oh i've tried my very best to treat people
right i still do you can't have a family i have and the opportunities i've had without treating
people good have i crossed the line ever absolutely in saying that when you get into mental health
that's what we crossed the line with johan one ever should be in that situation so when you
cross the line you have to own that when you think back at your time all right how do you look up
all right so so he did sort of he he said he went he went too far with franzen but he said
the excuse was and it is an excuse let's not sugarcoat it and it's it's not unfair because
we've all been guilty of this as well the conversation about mental health was much
different back then than it is now oh yeah yeah oh yeah that's definitely fair to say so so i i
can i can if if i am listening to this as trying to be as objective as possible um first off i
cannot stand when people talk about themselves in the third person i can't oh my god when he says
babcock martyr played well great for mike babcock oh i mean he's not the only person i've ever heard
do it but it's no you just you you know it's the ultimate sign to me of ego it's just it is i'm
sorry it's just an annoying it's just it's a pet peeve of mine far enough back into my head you
know yeah so so i'm trying to be fair to him on that and he said so when you do that you own it
or whatever um and he didn't and he says he reached out to franzen and fran and he said franzen didn't
reach out back and you know yeah yeah but he also also said yeah i've been a coach for years and
people are gonna be mad at me and yes so all of those things are true i think the real issue here
is um he has a problem with people saying well maybe he's just not the best guy
and the one thing that and and maybe there's a big secret cabal that of hockey players that
that um you know i i don't hear this said about every coach bad guy bad i don't hear this said
about every coach and and here's the thing too like um and i hate to put it in these terms but
but it's easy to be a bad boss and a good person to your family both are possible so it's so listen
and and and i think if if you look at the way that steve eiserman and brendan shanahan would
have been treated under mike babcock you can understand why maybe yeah they probably they
were stars they were the best players on that team in detroit they were amazing amazing hockey players
babs pretty good to the stars except for the fact that he you know limited henrik zetterberg's time
and and and austin matthews's time and all that sort of thing i i think um and even henrik
zetterberg didn't have great things to say about him when he left he said i think it was probably
time you remember that interview oh yeah oh yeah and like you know people have people have you know
oh i didn't like ken hitchcock or i didn't like um you know mike keenan they never said this
yeah i mean and also shanahan's time in detroit ended after the 2005-2006 season so all this
franz and stuff he would have no idea right he did play for him for quite a long time but he
wouldn't have known about any of that uh so anyway i i just feel like um i feel like that is the
equation with family versus how you are at work i've had horrendous bosses i've had great bosses
one thing that's probably ubiquitous is that normally they're good to their families or at
least in their own way good to their families um i'm not saying that mike is a bad father
no one suggested no no uh and no one has suggested that that he is an evil guy but the tactics he
used were were so aggressive sometimes like you remember when mark fraser came out and tweeted
about about him when he was fired and i remember going on the show and being like he did mark
fraser you played for him for like three seconds like what are you talking about it was like a
pre-season game or something well what's mark why is why is there and i said at the time why is
this pile on on mike babcock and then the marner story comes out and then the front and all the
other stories start coming out well it was weird yeah it was weird at the time because we didn't
know but i i think it's unfair of mike to say i wouldn't get these great opportunities if i wasn't
a good guy there are plenty of shitty people who get amazing opportunities incredible donald trump
was the fucking president man like i that's a pretty good opportunity for one of the world's
shittiest human beings it's crazy so i don't and and then don't tell me that you're because you're
good to your family that you were good to your players yeah and i think everybody knows everybody
knows and after 30 years of coaching mike you know you screwed mitch so if that story is what you say
it is then you should not have gone up to mitch marner and said i screwed you should i should i
address this you just address it so he said that though he said he didn't address it he said i
should have but i didn't if you're so he said you're so good he says in there that he he he
did the wrong thing by not uh saying talking to mitch you know and and that's fair he goes out
he talks to mitch he said should i address this in front of the team mitch apparently was in tears
by the way about this and so i there is something about this story that doesn't add up and i'm sure
mitch martyr would like nothing more than for this story to go away forever and ever amen but
but there's something about that story that does not add up and by the way if you're if you're the
highest paid coach in hockey in the world which is mike mike is then you need to know in that
i'm hoping that by paying you five and a half million dollars whatever they paid him
that you know in that situation that you don't go up to the 18 year old to say hey what do you
think i should do you just fucking do it mike um here so this is from mark frazier who was just
hired by the leafs by the way um anyone who thinks commie 22 so that's my commodore anyone who thinks
mike commodore needs to lay off babs just doesn't understand how much hate players have for him it's
beyond scratching uh commodore or saying he was out of shape nhl players are a very very small
population of athletes and people we share stories throughout the years with each other and for those
outside the locker rooms you will never truly understand some of the terrible undeserving
things babcock has done to some of his players you don't have to like all your coaches but he
is one who 95 of his players can't say a good thing about with the ability to end players careers
he's chosen to do so long uh to long-serving vets nearly spezza uh that resulted in all
nearly spezza was almost me that resulted in uh in all his players turning against him he's used
his power to turn teammates against each other and choose continuously to lie to his players
Commodore Mark Frazier is still going by the way Commodore may have strong public opinions on Babs
but in our fraternity of NHL and former NHL players he's speaking for the masses he's speaking for
countless players who have personally told me their terrible stories of Babs just being a bad
guy he's speaking for all the Maple Leafs who wouldn't dare speak uh the truth right now but
damn sure want to uh commodore has so many players respect uh if only the outsiders in hockey in the
hockey world know the truth thank you for jogging what that memory was that published that was
november 23rd 2019 so i want to say that was like the day or a couple days after or it might have
been the day the marner story broke i'm not totally sure it was before the marner story yeah i know it
was because at the time we're like well wait a second we never heard any of this shit before
Well, I loosely remember talking about this because we did, I don't know about defend Babcock, but we, cause we, I wanted him to be gone. Um, but we did sort of say pump the brakes because at the time, a, like you said, Mark Fraser would have played like no games for Babcock. So it didn't make any sense. And Commodore was like tweeting pictures of like Babcock, literally packing his things and moving, which I don't care how much you hate the guy. That's frigging weird.
so that's that's where we were coming from at the time but like those are strong words and
i already told you like in the former nhl players and the nhl players that i talked to there's
something about the term bad guy it's it's the worst thing you can call someone in in nhl circles
and i mean and jeff o'neill will scream it into a microphone i tweeted about at the time i was like
man you know what he did as much as i wanted him gone too i did tweet at the time he did change
things around here and he did lou and him did change things they were there was some huge changes
uh but that doesn't mean that there were all correct decisions and i at the time did not
know the extent of it um so anyway we'll continue jesse sorry about that
one second there we go your time here well it was spectacular uh i met really good people
we went from making sure we finished last to get austin matthews we built a program that
was competitive we set the record for regular season points we never got it done at playoff
time when i look at the team and i look at the players they've really developed and got better
you know it took michael jordan seven years to win a championship i'm proud of these guys and
i'm proud of the players they've become and they just continue to get better and obviously it shows
right now and that's it and so the last tidbit the last bomb to throw is we tried to finish last
right that definitely seemed like that that's exactly the sort of thing that could get the
team in trouble that's the shot at brendan shanahan by the way that's not a dubas oh you
think oh 100 dubas got his shot at the beginning that parting shot was for shanning interesting
and look it freaking worked and like as for the development like for a player like austin matthews
for a player like mitch marner for a player like william kneelander you would have had to screw up
to not develop them and and what about a justin hall justin hall is almost purely almost entirely
a sheldon keefe kyle dubas success project babcock would not play the player the right
hand defenseman you always needed was always there oh jesus lord and spezza all the work he's done
with the players helping guys get better at face-offs they love watch that um the blueprint
videos this season on the maple leafs youtube channel have been absolutely fantastic and the
one on spezza is so good they love this guy and the first thing he did uh like we i don't know
if i defended it at the time but i definitely was like okay it's fourth line center it's not
the end of the world it's nick shore whatever uh but now knowing what spezza means to that team
it's i get wanting to send a message that no one's job is given but like you're undercutting
a beloved nhl veteran who came here for nothing right and they brought them they brought them in
for a reason it was to to pump that dressing room up right it was the the idea was to to impart some
wisdom show the players that these these careers of yours don't last forever even when you're a
star player jason spetzel was a superstar and all a perennial all-star has never won a cup and now
is playing on the fourth line austin matthews mitch marner william neilander one day you too
might be playing on the fourth line fighting for your job that was the point like that's
take advantage benign that that but mike mike looked at that and said uh how do i how do i
just completely fuck this guy that's what that's what the that's what it looks like in retrospect
whether or not that was the intention it's it's sort of like it was like you know the medano 1499
and and he's got to sit on that forever yeah forever and and i think the idea like i think
if you were to ask mike babcock's friends family if he's a good guy they would tell you yeah but
that does not mean that he was a great guy to be coached by and and on the note of medano now like
that guy's a hockey hall of famer he's one of the best american players in nhl history and you
cannot look at his hockey db page uh you can't look at his 1374 points 813 assists 561 goals
stanley cup you cannot look at his career without seeing the the stain of mike babcock that's a
stain 1499 it's a stain that didn't need to be there it wasn't even that bad man detroit should
just or dallas should just sign mike medano now dress him for a game and put him out there for 10
seconds but then you're playing the whole game down a man who cares who cares they can handle
it they went to the finals last year who cares do it it's fine it's so yeah sign a 50 year old
he's 50 right now do we do we overrate mike bapkos coaching record too he has i know he has
two gold medals i believe and one i mean that's the gold medal thing the gold medal you're coaching
team canada it's not the hardest thing to do in the world and he has two stanley cups but like
the stanley cup appearances that the first one happened in the first season he was a head coach
with anaheim yeah he's got three appearances one win right he went and then the the appearances
all happened in the one two three four five first six years of his career and at the end of i guess
his nhl coaching career is over i don't know what's gonna happen next but he hasn't won a
playoff round since 2013 you know that's that's the end of his legacy is i made the second round
with detroit in 12 13 and then after that never won a playoff round the problem isn't we don't
need to take anything away from him we don't need to take away any gold medals any stanley cups
it's added like so if i'm an nhl team right now and i'm looking at bringing a coach on board
and i'm thinking of mike babcock i have to know that i'm bringing on a guy that did win
a long time ago but much more recent yeah but much more recently hasn't won shit
much more recently hasn't been to the second round and yeah there was that one year that
you tried to finish last okay there mike like yeah there was that but like the whole reason
remember i wanted this guy gone before i knew any of this shit because he wouldn't as a coach
he wouldn't play the right players to win games like the the simplest thing a form of a coach is
just putting the right guys on the ice and he wouldn't do that properly you know and you know
you know what mike babcock hasn't had to do for a very long time win someone over like he could
have won kyle dubas over and i know what they said publicly and oh i support kyle and i support mike
shut up like you have to you have to do that you can't be like yeah well you know mike doesn't play
any of the players i give him but other than that he's a good coach it's you can't just say that
outwardly yeah steve i really like reinforcing your point that he wasn't fired because he was
he's terrible with people like as as apparent in all these interviews he's just a terrible
people manager it's he was fired because he was he was a bad head coach by the end of it
yes yeah the team was it was fuck it was gonna miss the playoffs they were literally gonna miss
the play i mean ultimately they did but that's their own stupid fault because they couldn't
score against columbus they did but they would have made the playoffs but he did a poor he did
he was poor at his job and and remember though the conversation we have with cj they played
boston tight in game five and one and that's why he wasn't shit canned or part of the reason why
wasn't shit camp you remember sheldon keith you give sheldon keith a training camp last year who
knows well and and you know ifs and buts right i think the i think the uh uh the the tweet that
said it all for me is after that game seven game which was a total fucking disaster for the leafs
that second game seven game um and it was one of the worst coaching performances of mike's career
there's that's not in dispute they ask anybody bruce bruce cassidy fucking skated circles around
mike babcock that game out of the three game seven losses to boston in recent memory they allowed uh
seven goals in one of them blew a 4-1 lead in another and the third one was actually their
worst performance yes because they didn't score the five one the the it was for one game at least
they had four and they were over playing where they should have been yeah they were over they
overcame a 3-1 deficit yeah and then babcock's first go against boston they overcame a 3-1
deficit they were up 4-3 heading into the third i'm sure i don't need to rehash all that
the game 7 in 2019 they never had a shot no no from the moment the puck was dropped he insured
that yeah yeah and we were they played a tight they played a tight game five in boston what
about the shit show that was game six in toronto with home ice advantage and it was done it was
done after that stupid series and they let it go and you're putting you're putting zach hyman
uh shorthanded with one knee against patrice bergeron shorthanded remember that oh i remember
that the leafs had the fucking balls to put zach hyman who never takes face-offs against patrice
fucking bergeron and the boston bruins are you nuts like and that's that's that's and then i
said six arrow tweeted he said this will be the last game that mike babcock coaches in toronto
and it wasn't but it probably should have been it 100 should have been so anyway no but the gm
didn't want him we're gonna he doesn't want you i promise you he can fire you yeah we're gonna
leave that for now uh it's the i think we're done talking about this and if anybody else wants to
run any more stuff on mike babcock i don't think there's anything else to learn mike thinks he's a
good guy he's just certain people he will be um but you know he chose his family nicely he's good
to his kids in his life like good good i hope so giving him the chance to defend himself i mean
whatever but the idea that these things that came out after he was fired are the reason he was fired
or won't be hired now that that's asinine that's ridiculous he deserved to be fired by the leafs
long before we learned any of this that's right now before we kick off the press conference
i would like to take two minutes two minutes to say uh thank you and au revoir to tim and sid
not them separately uh and it's not like our friendship's over that's for sure but tim and
sid uh working together their last show is tomorrow that's february the 26th i highly
encourage you you uh tune in um this is two guys that lost their show on a third ranked canadian
sports network but by the way we can barely support two canadian sports networks um imagine
having a third well we did for years and tim and sid started on the air together and sean fitzgerald
does an incredible job of actually breaking this down for the athletic encourage you to read that
that's a great story um but after 20 years these guys were like they they took them off the air for
budgetary reasons because the score literally made no money and then um and then they're like
why don't we just do a podcast and Sid didn't even know what a podcast was and then this podcast
grows and grows and grows and people absolutely love them and in 2011 Don Collins who we all know
uh hired hired them and I actually know the story is it was relayed to me by uh Julie Adam who is
now the head of roger sports and media and i hope she doesn't mind me speaking out of turn here but
the story goes from the inside that um don collins went to her and said hey julie uh i want to hire
these guys to do mid-afternoons on the fan and she was about to jump on a plane because when you're
you know the head of a radio company that's a national company you're flying everywhere
and julie got on a plane and she got off the plane after listening to their podcast and
She said, they're not going to swear like that on our station, are they?
And but she obviously heard it then, as we have heard it for years.
And they had their whole like the whole campaign.
I'm a Tim and Citizen.
They had incredible launch.
There's so many great memories along the way.
And Jesse, I'm going to throw it to you in just a second.
But we just want to say to two men who have been so incredibly gracious and wonderful
to us personally and have provided years and years of entertainment and someone to look
up to we are going to miss tim and sid together both of you we love you jesse i'm gonna let you
take it away because you worked on the show yeah yeah i'm always gonna until somebody comes along
and surpasses them i'm gonna call it the greatest run in canadian sports media history because like
those two guys together from like you how you described it from starting at the score to where
they ended up doing radio and tv at sports net nothing in sports media in canada has ever surpassed
that and i don't think just in just the way the medium works now i don't think it ever will because
those platforms like you're not gonna they don't exist yeah the x or they're already built you know
like getting on tv getting on radio starting that podcast when podcasts weren't really a thing and
then them building that brand like it's it's unbelievable what they've been able to do
together and um tim always called the edutainment and i think they were the masters at that and
still are until tomorrow, I guess, at the end of the show. But they were the perfect blend of
educating you and entertaining you and being legitimately hilarious and informative and
giving you everything you want out of a sports show. And they're the two most talented broadcasters
I've ever seen in person, worth their magic. And the people who worked on that show are
unbelievable and the company they kept around them has always been so tight a lot of their
producers who work on their show at uh sportsnet came from their days at the score like they kept
those guys around because uh they know the talent that they have around them and then but those guys
are like the center of everything and it's just congrats to them on like i said the greatest run
in canadian sports media history and um tim's gonna have a great time i know doing this
whatever comes next and Sid's going to have
the greatest time in the world on breakfast
television.
It's going to be Tim
and friends, by the way. Tim will continue on
and there'll be a rotating cast of guests.
Very nice.
So Adam was talking about the three
sports
entities in Canada back
when the score was its own thing.
And to give you an idea
of the hill that they had to climb.
I was an intern
and i remember turning on the tv one day as an intern at the fan which is now sports net radio
and looking up and seeing tim and sid and going oh alex has a brother
alex six arrow was the six arrow i first knew of oh wow i didn't know he had a brother and then i
see him on the score i'm like who's this guy yeah i watched them and i think darren drager was on
the score at one point and elliot friedman for sure was on the score at one point yeah uh cabby
was on this like i watched all those guys i watched the score yeah everyone everyone did
his score tonight was it was a huge like and um like court cuts court cuts is just um ice surfing
like before ice surfing let's be honest here they did it and they started that format and um they
were hosting all those shows and like they would they would there was so much um revolutionary
television that the score had because they were they were the third guy and they could just try
shit and they'd have random wwe rights for a little bit when it didn't cost that much they'd
have the nba for a while and they were able to just try try stuff and i think that network had a
had a lot to do with the growth of those two guys and they'll tell the story one day yeah it was uh
so it was incredible that a couple times they came on this show we absolutely love them and
you know i don't think it's the end it's not like they won't come back uh it's just it's it's the
end of them working together and as happy as we are for Sid and as happy as we are for Tim
we're sad to see him split up because we love the two of them together and I think that's fair right
well it's sad to see anything from your childhood end yeah I don't think they'd be happy knowing
that I work there and it was probably some of the most fun I've ever had over the course of
eight months and like but I watched them when I was a kid you know and I was their employee
so they probably won't be happy about that because it makes them seem old but whatever it's well they
are so old as hell there's a terrifying experience walking into that building knowing i was gonna
co-host him and said that one day i was gonna be pretty freaking cool that you did that man
i'm glad i got to i i can i got to say i did it once and that's how it ended evidently
because they had me on a football heavy day and i was useless but
was an extremely good hand holder that day and it was an honor to eat uh chicken fingers with
him it was like smoke and weave a snoop dog it's uh it's just what you do it's what you do when
you're with sid six zero you have chicken fingers so on that note let's do the press conference i
was just gonna say so many legendary moments like gold medal in the face and like they've been
running all of the best of tim and sid like throughout the years and it's been incredible
to watch yeah yeah watch that tomorrow gonna be a lot of tears all right now we'll do the press
conference so uh jesse you have a question first note ralph kruger what did you guys think of ralph
kruger saying he doesn't somebody asked him hey is jeff skinner in the doghouse jeff skinner who
signed he was in the second year of an eight year eight million dollar contract eight i thought it
was nine in my eight years nine million dollar contract said this is the beginning of the second
year of it jeff skinner has now is going tonight be scratched for the third straight game and they
asked ralph kruger hey uh do you have a dog house and is jeff skinner in it and ralph kruger's
response was no he's not in the dog house and i don't even have one he's not in the yard what do
you guys think of that situation yeah that's ralph kruger saying i don't own a dog yeah basically
you know what's going to be so obnoxious when the sabers put skinner back in the lineup and he
performs like oh man who would have thought like what a rags to riches story that guy who makes
nine million bucks getting in the lineup and scoring like when jeff skinner gets back into
the lineup and is fine it won't be because ralph kruger sat him it'll be because he's jeff skinner
um is it is it possible fellas let me just throw a wild idea what if the sabers suck around him
what if the what i don't know should should jeff skinner be up in the press box
gazing down going you know what i gotta play more like the buffalo sabers
play jeff skinner ownership should be listen he scratched again you're fired
That's what it should be.
What if he's not good?
He's $9 million.
You have to make it work.
How are you going to find out if he's not good?
A $9 million player, yeah, I see that he's got one assist in 14 games.
It's not going good.
And last year wasn't great either.
He's also not playing.
When you put him on the fourth line, what do you expect?
You put a $9 million player in a position to succeed.
And I also have to throw this out there.
Ralph Krueger was coaching soccer before he got the Sabres head coaching job.
can we have we forgotten yes is that true and they're like it's made him a better coach no
guys ralph what level soccer i don't know like it's like who honestly jesse even if it was epl
would you care i would if he was the the manager of manchester united and then was the head coach
of the buffalo sabers i feel like that would be important uh so he's he's what if he was
would you care as much then or leeds united liverpool maybe he's written a book called
team life he wrote a book called team life beyond setbacks to success the book he authored uh in
german also translated to french uh was devoted to handling problems in life and became a bestseller
here's a guy that had no success in edmonton didn't coach hockey and then got hired by the
sabers what do i need to say and now he's sitting the guy who did perform well enough to get a nine
million dollar a year contract and then has the gall to say there's no doghouse ralph ralph jesse
you're not gonna be here next year man you're not guess who guess who guess who wins this battle
jeff skinner skinner they're not gonna buy him out you're fucked dude you're you're gone goodbye
Ralph maybe just doesn't care like here's the thing if you got okay here's when Bruce Boudreaux
sat Alexander Ovechkin which ultimately cost him his job you could say at the time hey well at
least Bruce has got some success to back it up guy wins a lot of games maybe not in the playoffs
but they always do really well in the regular season always near the top of their division
what does Ralph Kruger have shitty Oilers shitty Sabres a book
hey i don't like the stank you put on that actually nothing wrong with what soccer to
you did he go steve in your profession you're very successful there's a difference so he was
coach of the oilers for literally just the lockout shortened season um and then he left them
and then switched the soccer and this is from his wikipedia page in 2014 kruger made a switch
from ice hockey to soccer becoming director of southampton in february 2014 shortly after he
was appointed chairman of the club he was dismissed april 12th 2019 uh he was already set to leave so
in the middle of him being with southampton i guess he coached team europe to the final of the
world cup of hockey which i'm thinking hockey people put way too much stock in is that is that
the that's the world cup of europe here that was the sum of europe team right yeah some of your
yeah the boring ass team you know the should that north american team should have won
really that would have been fun some of europe was boring he's a popular guy um here's the thing
about ralph krueger like that's the thing that all the journalists say well the team
that's what they said this offseason while the sabers were ass last year but both of those
players love ralph krueger fucking who cares okay but is he good exactly you know and and the thing
is we just got finished talking about mike babcock saying like you know he's had some success but the
players hate his guts and that counts for something but the thing i'm trying to say is this guy
literally has nothing that suggests that he can win at the nhl level and now he's sitting a nine
million dollar player you're gone ralph and you're gone in the next week or so adam keep doing this
jesse adam jesse two years ago when we wore the orange jerseys at the easter seals uh celebrity
hockey classic did you guys have a good time yeah i had a great time was i fun to play with
yeah did we win a game uh no not until i got my buddy who's like a goalie ringer and then we won
yeah the next year we won two of three but and because we relied on him oh yeah he was our
felix poppin oh my god oh thank you for acknowledging felix poppin supremacy but uh
yeah i'm not getting that man i'm not getting that i i'm not getting how because you have to
salvage a player like that you do and i don't understand how you're going to salvage them
from the press box how is he going to get better from there and like i gotta be wondering uh who's
the gm again kevin adams i gotta be wondering what he's thinking who he clearly brought eric
Saul to Buffalo for a reason and I gotta be wondering if he's like oh cool what did I do
that for Kevin Adams didn't hire Ralph Kruger though I don't think oh interesting I don't know
who did there's so much turnover in Buffalo it's you can't keep up with their previous general
manager he was there for three seconds and then it was Tim Murray Jason Botterill Botterill Botterill
hired Kruger I'm pretty sure so I think Ralph Kruger's as good as gone now it might just be
that the begulers are like fuck you guys we're not we're not paying for another coach while another
one sits so you're stuck with kruger this year okay so you're stuck paying for a nine million
dollar uh fan he's sitting there and okay you don't have any fans in the stands and you got
jeff skinner and by the way people can go to buffalo savers games pretty soon here i know that
in new york state they're allowed so you actually could go there you go and maybe you'll see jeff
skinner yeah it's like no you won't see him though no he's the one in the suit with him
that's the fan experience jesse you get to sit with the nine million dollar player he's the guy
who looks like jeff skinner with a mask that's the free giveaway you know sit with jeff skinner
socially distanced pick jeff skinner out of the crowd listen that contract sucked and maybe it
was always gonna suck he's not out of the lineup bad no for the love of god hold on hold on let's
look at hold on hold daily face off sabers we're all in agreement that jeff skinner could crack
this lineup oh my god hey jeff skinner could crack the leaf lineup okay good i want to play
that yeah okay jimmy vc or jeff skinner let me think about it uh here let me here we got we got
on one side to sam reinhardt dylan cousins kyle akpozo and riley sheehan and on the other side
casey middlestad or sorry from the top victor olfson taylor hall uh rasmus asplund and casey
middle stat come on by the way asplund asplund that's a made-up take those for my headache
i think there's a second rounder the here's the thing man uh uh taylor hall's not even playing
with jack right uh jack eichel oh for the love of god that's not what he signed up for guys
taylor hall signed ralph kruger needs to go like it's honestly it's rearranging deck chairs on the
titanic with the sabers like they are going down but to at least make them somewhat competitive
pay your play your best players together i should i should put the asterisk putting jeff skinner in
the lineup they'll still be bad yes but like why are you making a bad team worse and it's not like
jeff skinner's good enough to make them so good that they'd miss out on the first overall pick
or something like they're gonna be in the drawing for that right yeah but you do need to salvage
that contract you have to what are you going to sell taylor hall on right because it's like
there's mutual interest in getting an extension done hey taylor you want to play for the guy that
uh is going to sit you in a couple years uh for the team that's always been awful and will be
awful like they haven't been good since max and finn again off but no they're their time's coming
the ship's coming in hey how does the how does the phrase go death taxes and jack eichel trade
rumors when does the ranger when does that pop up again he's going to the ranger they're already
are they already already happening the rangers are gonna get jack eichel it's just a matter of
time the sabers should have done it last year they had more leverage they didn't do it god they're
bad yeah they're they're so bad and i feel bad and the thing with sabers fans are like please
get jack eichel out of here we we can't continue to watch the man suffer like this sabers fans
want him out because they love him anyway uh jesse a couple questions before we wrap up the
show sorry i expected you to do a longer press conference but we you know always run late
yeah boys i literally i gotta go all right we're back from the pee break sorry uh he's a pee pee
boy i had to the first the first question comes from tony sinni they want to know will adam's
history corner ever make a comeback it you know what will uh we're now selling adam's history
corner merch so we have to uh i think we'll do it once a week uh we'll save it towards the end
of the show so you know if you're a hockey fan you're like fuck this history shit fine uh and
you should submit your questions jesse what's the best way uh just tweet at us i think if you just
tweet at us the best way to get questions in if you don't have twitter dm us on instagram if you
can't do that uh send an email or a carrier pigeon or get on social media those are extinct after
world war one jesse but thank you next question comes from uh juan estevez will full face masks
ever become mandatory in the nhl to prevent injuries like what happened to muzzin i was
thinking that actually yeah i think so probably well because what is the argument against it like
i agree there is a line that eventually has to be drawn like okay you can't just
walk around in sumo suits and bubble wrap but um like the best argument for not is guys don't like
it like craig mctavish didn't like wearing a helmet yeah you know what i mean there are players
in today's nhl who would gladly not wear a helmet yeah well of course and and it's it's a it's a
masculinity thing i think mostly um this whole nonsense about not being able to see the puck
these guys give me a fucking break these guys are so good that there's no they could do it with
their eyes closed these guys are so good and the thing with with muzzin is that like okay so now
he's broken a bone in his face he's coming back with a full shield anyway when he does come back
he'll play like jake muzzin and but you've lost jake muzzin for something stupid and at a certain
point a team's got to look at that and say we can't keep losing key players like jake muzzin
remember what happened to leaps when muzzin went down against columbus toast fucking toast you're
done forgot that i just keep thinking about stupid guy shit this is stupid guy shit no but like you
know the first guy to wear like you know those little plastic shot blockers yeah the first guy
took shit you just know the first guy who wore them took shit well and and looking at austin
matthews last night i'm like so help me if he's broken a bone put them on put them is it that
hard does it change the way you skate no it doesn't give me a fucking break there was i want
to say it was when finuff got that slice in his leg yeah um and shortly after i had to interview
some members of the canadian world junior team and i was talking to them about that and i think
it was braden shen um he's he's he's like you know what i don't like it that much but i'm not
taking any chances so he's he's wearing the kevlar on his wrists and you know wherever else you put
it they have the kevlar pants now and you know a few years ago i'm hot enough as it is i'm not
gonna wear that okay well hope you don't get sliced then like i don't know i i agree like
eventually you're going to have to draw a line but it i don't know is this it really
like you saw you saw what happened with like richard zednick and we're still like yeah but
i don't like it yeah or i don't like the neck thing yeah it's wild to me that like that to me
is the big one i'm i'm very surprised that's still not a thing yeah well neck guards a fabric
net guard like what i wore is really just to protect against skates man yeah i think what
what would help is if you're going down to block a shot and you got a full face shield all you have
to do is tuck your chin and you're fine and that's still probably get your bell rung but
you won't break your face exactly exactly and and i think you'll hear some bitching and then
they'll get over it all right safety first people this one no it's performance first i want jake
muzzin in the lineup please right like okay you know what jake how about next time don't play
with any gloves you want to be a fucking man play without no gloves yell at jake muzzin we don't
know how he feels oh let's play you know what just play with your bare hands like a man like
they did when they played the sport i know i love jake muzzin it's not jake's fault well and like
i don't think simmons wears a or no simmons does wear a visor i think it's bogosian doesn't
and i want to say lucic doesn't like it looks there's something old school looking about it
sure is dumb put on a sure is guys are you idiot put it on like
sure is dumb no no he's old school he's a man oh no well you know i've never played with one
and okay yeah that's me yo you know who wears a fucking full mask tom brady tom brady wears a
full like all football players wear that i think if tom brady could wear no equipment he probably
might take it you know i don't eat mushrooms i'm strong thank you tom brady's a weird dude
just get on the field dressed as a strawberry and that might be my favorite my favorite meme
of all time is man tom brady would be so cool if he wasn't so fucking weird
he's fucking weird it's so weird it's true it's true there's something a little off about him
he's weird yeah and it's like almost like boston collectively got to say
okay he's really strange but we miss him you know what i mean they could finally be like all right
you know when he went we know but shut up yeah yeah anyway greatest athlete of all time one of
them one of what sorry one of the greatest athletes of all time anyways uh we got this
question twice uh from david shoeman and simon hunt they both pointed out that michael hutchinson
now has the best safe percentage out of all three goalies that have played for the leafs this year
now this question is for this question isn't really about michael hodgson is do you guys
foresee a goalie controversy with uh frederick anderson and his play and jack campbell and his
play and michael hodgson and his great play is there a goalie controversy brewing in the six
no is the goalie solution the goalie solution is you have three good ones or at the very least two
does anybody have to clear waivers to go back on the taxi squad no question by michael hutchinson
yeah hutch might because it's an injury situation so i'm not sure they gotta do something about that
and the leafs are the leafs are being punished too the leafs are being punished for um doing
hockey good so they did a good thing this summer and they signed two men who willingly put pen to
paper to join their team michael hutchinson and aaron dell both of them willingly were like yes
i will i will take lots of money to come and play for your hockey team thank you right then
dell gets put on waivers and who you know what waivers is for to give guys a chance to play as
much as they can in the nhl and thank goodness for that because aaron dell has played one ahl
and one nhl game this season with the new jersey devils you know who's played three michael
hutchinson aaron dell would have played at least three nhl games by by now waivers isn't working
this season oh and if a goalie does get put on waivers the leafs are going to be the last the
last team to have a kick at the can because they're in first place and that's how the order
of the waiver wire works so they're being punished for being in first place and for having a good
offseason imagine Hutchinson gets claimed then you either got a claim like no terrible goalies
are getting put on waivers anymore it's too far into the season so you're gonna have to trade
the Leafs are being actively punished for their success yeah well I speak on behalf of the other
30 teams when I say boo fucking who Leafs take out the Leafs and make put just do everything
that i just said but take out leafs and put in minnesota wild or some shit it's dumb it's a dumb
way of doing no listen if it happened to the coyotes then the nhl would do something
there you go that's when you see some action so that oh man the coyotes are in trouble
gary betman gets his cape on don't worry i'm coming all right one more question jesse one
more oh fun yeah let's fucking do it let's go let's do it let's do it i'm sorry i lost my
questions i am pulling them up look at this guy losing his questions steve this is a quick
question for you did you name this is from adam steiner he said did you name uh today's lfr
red dead neil redemption red dead neil and demption and he says is that your worst lfr
title of all time uh no it's actually my best okay because that's that's the that's what you got
listen
you've known who I am
for a very long time
and it weren't us who changed
that's Red Dead Redemption
I've never played it
it's a very good game
it's actually what I used for the title
of today's LFR
Red Dead Nelandemption
not everybody's into those types of games
not everyone's into one of the most popular
video games in human history
you're right
Tough night for Anthony Stewart last night, eh?
Well, because of all the Neanderthals.
How dare he?
He's coming for you, Jesse.
What the hell?
I thought Stewie was cool.
And then he goes on national television
and he calls everybody who's a Neander fan Neanderthals.
And then now he's got to eat crow.
Like, okay, you deserve it.
But he would say, see, this is what I,
he hasn't been great for the last five games in summary.
there's always a way to say william neal is not good it's always wrong but there's always a way
i think he's greatly enjoying your hatred absolutely oh i think he loves his mentions
you get that you said that you get you see his face and he's just like yeah here we go yeah
thank you for that yes the always easily rattled anthony stewart what i think of easily rattled
i think of anthony stewart everyone save your breath i like kathy campbell better anyways
so yeah wow wow i'm looking at the most i'm looking at the smartest people on that panel
i'm definitely not looking at stewie whoa let's pit the panel against each other yeah
elliot friedman love mary kick off the panel who do you choose let's go i would love to see
heel turn, Elliot Friedman. Sources say
you're an asshole.
Exactly. Anyway.
I like it when Justin Bourne's filling
in on Hockey Central.
That's when the show's at
its best. No, it's
not, because then he pulls out all of his
stupid numbers.
Get out of here.
Just stats nerds. A world full of nerds.
I'm with Stewie. He played.
I'm with him.
No, I played the game.
I played poorly, too.
How do you say it, Jesse?
What?
You played the game.
I played the game.
I played the game.
I played the professional hockey.
I took a good.
Here's my take.
You guys are all Neanderthals.
Guys, I have to leave.
So I'm going to leave.
But you guys can continue this as long as you want.
But I love you.
Adam, I'm going to leave.
And our show picks up again on Monday.
Yeah, Adam.
I'm on the radio.
I'll see you later.
I like Rick.
