The Steve Dangle Podcast, powered by Sports Interaction, Canada's sports book.
the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake
now you can't see it steve is being the halloween spirit version of himself
canadian clown costume that's right i have my purge mask on and it's fitting because it's time
for the Leafs to purge.
Whatever else.
I don't know what it is.
Yeah, I don't like the phrasing.
Listen, there's an issue.
Steve, listen. I watched your one-taker.
No, leave it on.
Here, I'll join you.
I'm sure this is a great audio experience
for everybody.
I watched your one-taker
and I want to say that I really liked it.
And I know you would like to go off.
And we would like to allow you the time to do that.
At first.
Before we do that, Adam, you hate Halloween
I hate Halloween
How much convincing did it take
For you to get one mask
No, we had a stupid
So we sit down at Virgin Radio
And our boss is like
Hey guys, you gotta do something fun for Halloween
So we had some things lined up or whatever
I had a whole contest for Jax, which was called
Let her eat candy corn
So if she lost
She had to eat a gigantic handful of candy corn
She lost every time, it was great
but but jacks wanted to do a halloween costume off and i'm like what's the least amount of money i
can amount of money i can spend for this so i wore dark clothes and i have my purge mask and it was
15 on amazon it's a good little mask i'm shocked you did even that well i think it's kind of neat
i actually like this mask it's you know what i i i never loved halloween as growing up as i i think
i've mentioned on this show before and it's just one of those where i just don't care i like i like
christmas a lot better i didn't like being scared but i loved candy see i like the scared part that
part's fun see you're deranged that's very strange i just didn't want to go from house
i was like ah i need to get dressed up for this i used to a lot of work for so long that the bag
would get too heavy to carry i'd have to drop it off and go back really oh yeah there were at least
two years uh last year taking everly out this is where i found my joy in in in halloween events
all year you know kept it in my heart all year is everly was like it was her first time trick
or treating because of covid because she's two and a half at the time we took her out and jacks was
dressed as a ghost because we wanted to see how many people jacks could fool because she's really
short and everybody was the answer so she just like everly's looked like everly's big sister but
um i was uh um she would be like hi i'm everly and this is daddy to every house i'd be like say
trick-or-treat oh yes and trick-or-treat and uh and this year she or sorry the next day she asked
she's like when do we trick-or-treat today because she didn't understand didn't understand
that it was the next you know like only things kids would think of right and uh so she's out
tonight with her mom and it's gonna be fun all right that's brilliant ranking top three okay
christmas oh halloween long weekend so so i'm throwing which long weekend i'm looping in
canada day long weekend and the civic holiday the august civic holiday and labor day i'm gonna i'm
gonna give you all three of those as one category the labor day the civic and the canada day or
christmas this is so easy halloween so easy which are which are your adams first so easy so first
off three is halloween yes two is christmas one is the long weekends in the summer easy that's
easy i'll tell you why halloween i've already expressed why my my disdain although i do love
the movies and like those specials and all that stuff the uh the thing uh christmas is great
but everybody sees christmas as a break they call it christmas break and that's a dirty absolutely
stupid lie don't let them lie to you like that seeing your family is not a break seeing your
family is fun but it's not a break a break is a break from your family and and and to be honest
with you i can't think of something that is way more fun than being uh in the water at someone's
cottage on a long weekend uh steve and i spent many a long weekend together um now we now we're
family men and we can't do that as much which is it was weird we should just rent a cottage
yeah but together together no why no no we could bring the kids no no i'm just guys being dudes
i think i think sometimes it's like christmas you're running around everybody's house and you
know what's interesting about christmas too at least that this is what i found is at a certain
point christmas needs to center not around your parent but i am finding myself with my two dogs
now a cat because natalie had a cat uh and my three and a half year old running around to
her house and my two parents houses and i'm like hey wait a second i think it's time that you guys
come here oh so i think we're gonna have to start to institute that role see you could have solved
a lot of your problems by just staying
divorced.
The cat, the
wife. Like, you added
a cat, a wife, and a whole other
side to the family, and you could have just stayed
divorced. You're right. You're right. This is your fault.
It's idiot. Steve, what's your right?
Oh, boy.
Halloween's three.
I'm sorry. It's three. Like, I'm going
to practice. Leo, what do you say?
Chick or cheat. And it's going to be so cute.
And then we're going to go bing bong.
and it's leo say it go ahead say it and he's gonna hide behind my leg and he's not gonna say
it and it's gonna be cute but it's like okay how many okay we got about a dozen houses of this
before he's sick and tired of it right he doesn't really care about the candy payoff actually we're
we're gonna find that yeah yeah i'm sure he will and he doesn't call it that because again he's a
half scottish child sweeties what percentage of the candy are you eating oh um
i'm gonna say less than half less than half he likes sweet okay he likes sweet so halloween's
three halloween's three and i badly want to put christmas number two but it's christmas has shot
up the rankings it's amazing since leo became aware of the world it's way better when you have
kids way better yeah i will say christmas plummeted down the charts the moment i became an
adult the moment i became an adult because i started to feel stupid about accepting gifts
and also um every year my family would have a uh a boxing day get together that i would have to
like be separated from the family for uh and be in like some other room to watch canada pump
kazakhstan 16 nothing in the world juniors because i had to work right there was one there was one
but not fun there was one christmas those games are not fun no they're not as fun as everybody
yeah let's go it's like okay you know what makes them especially not fun the narrative coming out
of them is the same every single year we are a broken record we say you shouldn't score so many
goals and then everybody's mad for 24 hours and forget there was there was one uh actually i think
this was new year's where i was at a house party in meford ontario do you all know where meford is
i do but i haven't been there it's i i can't speak to how great of a place it is to be but
it's a great place to be in the snow surrounded by friends but everyone's having a house party
like literally a red solo cup drinking flip cup house party and i'm in a room trying to keep it
down while i'm literally on a conference call running a chat for like nike for world juniors
i'm on a conference call with jerome again oh my god and i'm like guys guys guys shut up
see fucking get in here bro it's time guys i'm on the phone with jerome jerome gets it please shut
up jerome gets it he got it anyway uh yeah christmas number two and long weekend number
three because all those magical moments with children you get to do on the number one as well
long weekend's number one long weekend's number one oh wow wow jesse what's yours uh christmas
is the greatest time of the year i love i'm with you like overall the greatest season it's the
greatest season it's the greatest season that's in christmas that should be a factor into your
rankings factor into your rankings also the halloween season see here's where jesse has a
point the long weekend is three days and that's an unfair advantage if we're talking what are we
talking are we talking christmas eve christmas boxing day i put i'm putting the whole the whole
two-week lead up even like when he gets to december and you're like oh my god all the
christmas stuff is out christmas markets i i like boxing day is underrated in online shopping like
oh it's incredible that's a good time when you get you get cyber monday in there at the end of
november you know that's a christmas season see we got dink over here double income no kids
you never heard that term dink no double income no kids the first time i ever heard that
was on a like a tour of amsterdam and they said something about oh yeah 50 of amsterdam's dinks
and i'm like what yeah double income no kids man you live in toronto you get to do all that
dink stuff a lot of dinking you're not you're not bringing your kid to the christmas market
that sounds like a fucking nightmare but no but go there with your girlfriend oh yeah everything's
around new christmas yeah the annoying christmas stuff where you guys bring kids your kids start
crying i'm just there having fun i know yeah you're like man that looks uh really hard
sucks for you anyway honey you want to go get a cider even even the um where you can be excessive
with the chocolates and the sweet it's all acceptable during christmas like you want to
put on 10 pounds because you had too much stuffing and turkey and everything like all all the i want
have candy till my joints are sore duck do you i don't eat duck any time of the year besides
christmas where the fuck where do you eat christmas duck where do you eat the duck everywhere on my
table everywhere where is this readily available the chocolates and the sweets you don't get that
during long weekend long weekend you're outside outside the sun hurts you know what he's right
okay i'm you both are wrong i love the sunshine okay but even if it does not love my pale body
what about sitting in the shade
with just a
short glass with ice in it full of
disaronno like a
like a no no
just sitting oh you don't like a disaronno
you mix it with a corona
it tastes like a Dr. Pepper
not for me
liqueurs make me sick I can't do liqueurs
you don't like Baileys?
occasionally but like you know what it does it gives me heartburn
okay go to a doctor
like everything gives you heartburn
That's ridiculous, man.
I think you might have a problem there.
No.
How do I have the second most sensitive stomach in this podcast?
That's ridiculous.
Very true.
Considering the video you put out last night, that is very, very true.
There's some stress.
Now, we will get to that.
Let's get into You Can Bet That.
I think you're going to like this one.

man you know it's it's unfortunate dave couldn't make it yeah for the segment today we dave we have
not talked about the leafs at all except for a brief little shot at the beginning and when we
were when we were doing the segment here steve i said to the guy i thought was dave who's clearly
not dave who will explain who he is in a second i said to him listen it's either got to be no
leafs or it's got to be all leafs yeah so what's it gonna be what's it gonna be not dave
it's gonna be
oh my god
all leafs
how's it going
happy halloween
happy halloween
and it is gonna be
all leafs
the trick was
the treat
wow
look at that
that's it
so can you
explain the costume
for anybody listening
cause that would
have made no sense
so Dave's got
Dave's got his
old school
Winnipeg Jets jersey
on and an old school
Winnipeg Jets
goalie helmet
and really
goalie helmets
were just face masks
That were plastic
Thinner than your average kitchen plate
What would you say Dave
Who is this supposed to replicate my friend
Well first of all for anybody
Listening to this check out the video
As well because it's definitely worth it
And you guys should always be watching this video
Yeah take that
And no this is Doug Sotar
He played
He played on the Jets back in
The 1980s early 1980s
And the funny part was and here's a quick story
so you notice the blue and the and the white yes yeah slightly it's slightly off um what you
call jet exact colors because he was actually traded from the rangers to the jets and what
they did was they put the logos on it slightly modified a little bit but left the original
ranger colors on it not a word of a lie but you know you got to remember this was also back in
the 1980s right things were a little bit different today if somebody gets traded the next day it's
like holy cow he has a new paint job on his helmet it's like it's almost like a 24-hour job
but back then it was it was sometimes weeks and if not months before that's why you'd always get
the new goalies wearing the full whites right and you wouldn't and you wouldn't see anything
for the longest time it's like what a terrible helmet i remember i remember that fantastic i
i don't know how goalie stopped anything back in the day but they sure look cool you know what i
well and and it doesn't look like doug stotart stopped a lot his uh same percentage was 868 in
his first year with winnipeg 869 the next year and 869 the year after that you don't understand
this is the early 80s that's a vesna candidate well he did his second last year in montreal as
their backup uh to patrick waugh i believe that was the stanley cup year 895 which is the best
of his entire career that's yeah no the that's the heart did he have a long career uh he did
actually started started in the nhl and a lot back and forth with the ahl from about and he
also played wchl but um i would say his career really professional career started in 75 76 and
went to 86 87 not bad yeah give me a decade in the nhl and i'm signing up for whatever you want
that's right now now how how are we going to drive the point home that things aren't good for
for the leafs dave what do we got here well you know what a new month right tomorrow's a new month
So you got to think positive, right? And you have to think, okay, let's, let's talk. Hey, I'm trying my best over here. Let's talk about, let's talk about November and November for the Leafs schedule, 15 games. So what we did at Sports Interaction is okay. In those 15 games, tell me what Austin Matthews is going to score. We've set the number at nine and a half goals. So if you're going over or under, what's it going to be?
15 games eight against the metro division three against the penguins two against the devils are
the highlights as far as uh the most teams played and so forth but you know what slower october
does he pick it up in november your thoughts he is picking it up yeah and he did score
in that it's not even that he scored it's that he was on a mission um and you could tell
from the first period onward you know what you don't have to be high on the leafs right now
but this is a player prop you're talking about the rocket winner you're talking about a guy
who started slow last year and picked it up you talked about a guy who's worth betting on
i'll take this one oh taking the over jesse you said it's nine and a half it's nine and a half
and and he's he's the odds favor him to go slightly over but not bad value on the under
Let me just preface this.
If he scores nine goals in 15 games, you get it at a 202.
Nine goals in 15 games is a pretty darn good month in my estimation
because if you're scoring nine, ten goals a month
over the course of an NHL season, that's on pace for a rocket.
I'm just saying 202 is the under if he hits nine or less.
Okay, so are you flip-flopping?
I think the odds – no, no, no, no, no.
The odds for the under are –
Okay, if I didn't cheer for the Leafs, I'd take the under here.
I think it's better value, but I need something to cheer for right now.
So that's why I'm taking the over.
What a conundrum you've put him in.
That's what Doug Sotard's all about.
It says that on his page.
It's a part of the DB.
Dave Bassel, thank you so much for joining us.
As always, we will see you Friday, where it will not be Halloween.
It'll just be horror for the Leafs, likely
Especially if they lose to Philadelphia on Friday
Okay, see you guys
See you later, pal
Now, I haven't asked this question, but how are you really?
Surprisingly at peace
Are you?
Yeah, because it's over
There was a one-taker last night that you did that was close to 20 minutes long
It did not feel like it
How long did it feel?
Eight, ten
I was surprised when I woke up this morning
And was like, oops, sorry, Drew
but i had the video to him and he had it uploaded faster than usual even though the game well
there's no editing hour later yeah because there's man bringing someone on getting producer drew to
edit those things is like one of the best decisions of my life i'm glad i'm glad i think
marrying my wife having leo as a son and number three is probably getting drew to end those videos
oh man what a relief 14 years of editing that shit on my own yep and listen it worked but
after a certain amount of time you're producing so much content you can't do it i'm not going back
well so so even if there's a fire obviously if you haven't seen steve's lfr yet you're in for a
treat it does it it it's it's just one take of everything and i i remember i said i'll tell you
honestly i sent steve and jesse um a note yesterday saying essentially man i hope the ducks don't let
off the hook here like i hope i hope because because what what would to me what would happen
yesterday and you could call this a hot take and call whatever you want is that if they beat the
ducks everybody this morning is like okay well they're getting it back on track they put effort
in they put effort in and the thing that you need to realize is that the ducks are what you think
the coyotes are yo the ducks are actually ass they're so bad abysmal they have no talent and
they play lose hockey like they're bad they have bad like there's good bad teams like philly bad
team good structurally the leafs were so bad that they let the ducks feel good about themselves
because at the beginning of that game when the leafs they came out with more pep oh yeah although
they the ducks they did get a chance on the first shift fucking hilarious this game cannot start a
game on time they're incapable of it and it doesn't matter who the coach is but uh their
body language was miserable they're one of the most miserable hockey teams i've ever watched
and then the leafs actually let them feel a swagger and when i saw the ducks celebrate
their first goal i'm like at least this game well and then they got up 3-1 and they blew it
yeah and there's a few things that we'll need to go through in the game before we get to where this
goes but you're we're going to start at the ending here and then we'll and then we'll go back to the
beginning this is the tarantino method you already know how this start this ends how did it happen
your belief right now unless it's changed in the last 12 hours is they need to make a move before
their game in philadelphia on wednesday not necessarily before their game against philadelphia
but like within the next two weeks it's over it's over or you know even if it's you know these
things don't necessarily happen quickly it could take up to a month but this group it's done it's
done it's over uh that's why i have like a sense of peace um you know 1920 the the the 2019 2020
season there was a stress and an anxiety to it because they started the season with cody cc on
the top pair and we're like yeah but they don't they don't actually think this is good actually
no i'm starting i'm not even starting at the right place it was no but they're gonna flip them right
they're gonna flip them yeah and then they didn't flip them oh okay well you might be okay on the
third pair then they put them on the top pair but they're only gonna do this for a minute and then
about a month into the season you're just like oh they're just doing this then
they just think this is good yes and i spent the whole season going kyle for god's sake they're
bad what are you doing they're bad this group stinks what have you done and what did they do
after the david ayers game because that was that season what did they do they actually went on a
pretty hot street well no i wasn't even going to say that they refused to make the justin or the
the the zach bogosian trade they didn't make any moves on the trade signing they didn't they were
going to make any moves at the trade deadline and then they did do well you're right but the
The difference there is that was them refusing to double down on that group.
Right.
That was them pulling the chute.
That was because they didn't want to tell this team that, hey, we're getting you help.
Yeah.
Because they didn't deserve it.
Yeah.
Which was, I think, the right move at the time for that.
I do, too.
But the circumstances are different.
There's, all right, screw you guys.
We're not going to sell the farm so that we can lose in the first round again.
And good.
They didn't sell the farm.
They just lost in the first round organically.
No, they lost.
they lost in the pre first round there you go so we're not even gonna do that that but the other
thing was at the end of the season what did kyle dubas say about cody cc uh i can't remember i
just remember the mid-season i'm sick of the referendum on cody cc yeah so kyle said at the
end of the season that actually what you saw is bullshit because he made the comment that the
defensive metrics were actually really good and really positive on cody cc is that not justin
haul in a nutshell a lot of numbers reflect on him favorably they do um and there are games where
i'm like you know what i see it um he's brutal dude he's brutal and we've had the conversation
many times you can't get a right-handed defender as good as him for two million bucks yeah you can
he's brutal he's brutal it's over um like there are there's a there's a
uh definitiveness to how bad they are right now and do i think they're gonna play like this
forever no they look like the worst team in the league on a lot of nights like they're four five
and one which is not catastrophic but they lost to the coyotes they lost to the habs who are doing
the habs someone said the habs are the top ranked canadian team in the atlantic division
Which is hilarious because the Canadian teams are 6th, 7th, and 8th
They suck
They lost to the Sharks
And now they lost to the Ducks
Can I give you the goalies that they've played?
Yep
Jake Allen, Lindgren, Forsberg, Vemelka
Wedgwood, Hellebuck, Thompson
Kakanen, Peterson, Gibson
They missed out on playing
Kemper, Ottinger, Reimer, and Quick
And they are 31st
In 5 on shot 5 shooting percentage
That's Kevin Pappetti today
cal peterson's have having just a terrible year like we're all talking about anaheim
los angeles factors into this too right you can't talk about the anaheim game without talking about
the la they're not doing well they're not the kings overall but like they they kicked the
they sure did well against the leafs yeah and then so so this is the thing okay so you're you're
just like for as bad as like we think cal peterson is i think jonathan quick's been worse
he's like he's like an 870 oh really yeah well and so it would have been helpful to face jonathan
okay and out of the five losses well six they the leafs have not lost to a team
who made it out of the first round yet yeah have they played a team who made it out of the first
round yet i don't know washington dallas la i don't think so no like not off the top of my head
the jets dude so for i think i might have had it wrong honestly in the off season because i
talked about how the leafs had a really difficult october they had a really difficult october in
terms of they had a lot of games and not very many nights they had a long road trip that sucks
the list of teams not bad i'm sorry you can't leave that month sub 500 you can't if you have
any aspirations of being anything you can't leave it sub 500 and you did and let's call it what it
is it's not four five and one it's six
and it's four and six you're four and
six yeah you lost six games and like you
know the the conversation that
Sheldon's not an NHL goalie yeah sure I
agree he's also the third goalie and
like they fucked this up like they they
really hit with the alias Samson great
great bet full marks full full marks to
Dubas and crew but they got another
injury prone goalie they repeated their
Mrazek mistake essentially with uh Matt Murray one game he's gone and I don't think like I said
this a couple weeks ago it's still true if one of Samsonov or Shelgren gets hurt they are not
eligible to recall a backup Murray is hurt Joseph Wohl is still hurt Keith Petruzzelli is not under
contract and uh dryden mckay is not under contract and dylan ferguson is not under contract and they
can't sign them because they're at the 50 contract max if one of their goalies gets hurt they're
fucked so this is something we talked about earlier on and i think it's important the least
one of this season with a lot of this and if you're watching if you're listening instead of
watching a lot of finger crossing well who do we what are we crossing our fingers on everything
we're crossing our fingers on let's start from the goaltending steve just mentioned it matt murray
we're crossing our fingers on two factors a that he has a comeback he saw we shoot we saw flashes
of it in in uh in ottawa especially last season but again injured b part of his his thing is
injury can he stay healthy and can he be good again those are those are two major we're crossing
our fingers there already i thought he looked good in the preseason and his first game wasn't
very good but yeah i mean neither was i mean samsona's first two games weren't very good
they weren't and so this is so then so then what let's let's move to another position
we look at uh we look at defense well we're crossing our fingers on a few spots there
we're crossing our fingers that giordano's good we're crossing our fingers that he's been fine
uh and he that's what i mean so that's a good one but and and giordano's 39 and carrying a
massive load we're crossing our fingers specifically that jake muzzin can still be
the jake muzzin of even 24 months ago he barely even made it out of camp and and because he came
because he's injured well don't worry it's not an injury it's just and it's just something he
has to manage yeah that's an injury that's a chronic injury that's worse timothy lilligren
bad luck that he had the the uh the um what is it called the stomach thing where you you tear
your hernia hernia bad luck on the hernia it happens but you can't sit here and tell me that
timothy lilligren is what you're hanging your season on or the reason that your defense stinks
they're better with him but like that can't be your missing piece and then you're crossing your
fingers on getting sandin done well yeah well he looks i was gonna move to the forwards but yeah
um on a on a defenseman to fill in who missed most of camp who's a young player and he's looked
terrible and and then you go into the top 12 right you're going to your forwards you're crossing
your fingers essentially that seven of those guys are going to figure it out you already know
bunting matthews marner eventually is going to click you know tavaris nylander works and and
they've been the best this they've been the best two players on the leafs this year then you got
you've never found a spot for kerfoot you've signed your croak to a four-year contract we're
done to a modified no trade clause by the way each year okay he might end up getting traded
and and then you got obe kubel um you got zach astin reese signing and and these are guys that
you're hoping come in and provide value and it's funny to say but not only can they not score like
jason spezza they're also not providing any of the the grit of jason spezza there there was a a
i'm gonna do the biggest air quotes ever hit last night from zach astin reese
where i was like please get off my hockey team like it was just the gentlest most feeble
hunk of shit take off your skates hang up the jersey get off my hockey team now like if if
you're on the fourth line what was wrong with the hit it was just it was a muffin oh it's just like
he let up on the thing and there was no reason to if you're on the fourth line and your name is
Zach Aston Reese you got one job you got one job you go out there you hustle you dig you hit
be a pain in the ass to play a pain in the ass yeah so and him and Obey Kubel have just been
muffin merchants and a lot of people are saying this and it's correct numbers wise if Matthews
had been scoring at a normal pace Marner been scoring in a normal pace the numbers say very
likely that the Leafs would have picked up two more wins in October yep and they would have
had the exact same issues but and this is the thing two more wins still isn't great they'd be
six and four instead of four and six it's not great and and so we're crossing our fingers that
a lot of things are going to go right and these are key pieces goaltending one of your major
defensemen we had a big decision to make on jake muzzin well they didn't make one and now the
decision's been made for them perfect and and so now we look at this team and they're gonna go play
of philadelphia and who's gonna outwork them we've given we've given torch shit before the flyers
haven't looked this good since pre-pandemic dude uh i feel like listen i've given the flyers shit
and they've deserved every bit of it um and i don't feel bad for any of my cold takes when it
comes to the flyers because their fans agreed with every word of it um but john tortorella
usually is able to do two things.
He gets your team to work extremely hard
and he just blows some sort of magical fairy dust
into the face of every goalie who plays under him.
That's because they have strong defensive systems.
Yeah.
They play good defense.
Torts, you're going to play defense.
The only place it hasn't worked, honestly,
and I made fun of him mercilessly for this,
was Vancouver.
Yeah, that was a disaster.
And I don't love his coaching style some of the time, but it works.
He's got a brand.
Sure.
And so let's go back to last night's game.
At least they're going to win on Wednesday, by the way.
You think so?
They always do.
That's the perfect game that they win.
Yeah, at home against Philadelphia.
What a fucking hero's welcome.
Yeah, they're going to wake up for that game, and they're going to win it.
Every single time.
Because they have the chance, and they have the skill to win every game.
Right?
Not really.
Well, they should.
They should.
don't think they do let's get into last night's game though a little bit because obviously there's
a couple of things like like i saw mark specter tweeting about how that disallowed kerfoot goal
is you know how the nhl for sure you should see the nhl is biased towards toronto in mark
specter's defense the nhl isn't good at anything so yeah if they're actively trying to help the
leafs uh win that makes a lot of sense look how well it's working i wish they'd stop so the leafs
could win something um but i i think i think um i think you know you could be forgiven if you were
any other team uh even leaf fans were like that should have been a goal there should have been a
goal they they they missed that call i understand why it was called off the one thing that was
the moment chris lee pointed at center ice to give the lease a penalty shot i'm like this is a uh
pissing match between him and uh Dallas Eakins the Leafs penalty that should have been a penalty
shot and the Ducks penalty shot that should have been a penalty was fucking identical it was the
exact same thing and Cam Chiron uh who is quickly turning into one of my favorite Twitter follows
again again um he had a great point the team that gets awarded a penalty shot should have the option
to take a power play because the leafs at the time had the lead and it's the third period what
would you rather have two minutes of the clock that you can kill or a penalty shot that you can
score or if you miss the game just the thing where the clock is the thing that doesn't make sense
about the penalty shot for me is that you have a far better chance i think on a penalty shot than
you do on a penalty kill you get two minutes of play or one shot yeah like it would never make
sense to take the penalty shot if you're
given the option. It's literally stupid. The Ducks wanted it.
The Ducks wanted it, and I understand
that because their power play
sucks ass, and
I don't remember who it was
who would have gotten the penalty shot, but like
the Ducks, every NHL
team, even like whether their systems
are good or bad, has dudes with
hands, has dudes who can
score on that shot. The Ducks
power play was a negative last night.
They were dash. They
suck. I guess it would make sense.
they suck also like both teams were right yeah the ducks yeah please give us the penalty shot
and the leafs uh no no we'll take her foot also should never have gotten a penalty shot he got
a clear shot well yeah he got a clear shot away that should never have been the penalty shot is
supposed to be you impeded the shot yeah yes that's the rule i'm telling you chris lee and
dallas eakins were absolutely having a like a tantrum at each other that is not like a penalty
don't say that stuff doesn't happen this this ref's a person and they're thank you jesse they're
tough hockey dudes and they're going at each other and that and he's making biased calls because he's
trying to show up dallas egan as a leafs fan i'll tell you how i interpreted it he took glee in the
penalty shot call and he took glee in disallowing that goal which i know was a collective decision
with him and in the room and whatever um but he took glee in that because he him and dallas
eakins were in a fight and the ducks were yipping at him all night who got caught on mic saying
fuck off oh fuck off or um i don't remember who that ref was but are you talking about um oh my
god the the ref who said i was trying to give a penalty to nashville that too oh yeah um that
all why am i forgetting his name peel tim peel yeah yeah and but then yeah then the other ref
who was fucking swearing yeah no they're yeah they're all they're all babies and like and but
but like dallas eakins too that remember he was like uh did you catch him swearing at chris lee
yeah so omar tic-tac-toe mar had the clip and i did the lip reading and it was like then
fucking raise your fucking hand motherfucker
yeah and i'm like if sheldon keith got fine for saying fuck you graham i think dallas egan should
probably get fine for saying this is okay it's like if it's not caught on tv this is all just
happening yes and you think that ref's gonna give you the benefit down on a call when you just call
him a motherfucker absolutely no no and i've seen chrisley losing on guys a few times like he's he's
a bit of a he can be a bit of a hot-headed ref and like i mean he skates around with hot-headed
players but that's why i've said and been called a dork for like you shouldn't be allowed to yell
and scream at the officials like that no because it lends itself to situations like that so this
is now the second game of the season where the leafs got a very obvious advantage from officiating
and they might not have won the jets game without it and uh i mean i can i can forgive specter or
anyone for being like the refs tried to hand that game to the leafs and they sure did against the
last place team and oh talk about burying the lead the leafs used game seven of a playoff series
tactics against the ducks before the game by not releasing their lineup dressing all 23 skaters for
the warm-up we're not gonna get we're not gonna give you any information they played mind games
with the anaheim ducks got the benefit of the doubt when it came to officiating and lost
get out of the league you're trash and this is why i have my sense of peace this team
is not doubling down this management group is not going to double down
it's over it's over for this group they're done who's it going to be i don't know
could be one of the big four could be
kerfoot maybe jack of all trades master of none he's more like the eight of clubs of all trades
master of none hall for the love of god like so that clip going around last night
of the clip is horrible apparently mitch marner yelling at justin hall during a admittedly just
i don't know who he was a horrible play get it over the horrible play get it over the blue line
now the one thing i'm gonna say yell at him what's he what the fuck yeah is that what it is
and you know what i could barely make it out my ears are thick i don't mean me too i couldn't
hear it i had to get steve to write it out for me but like but it is objectively from a hockey
perspective a terrible play which is yeah indicative of a player that has no confidence
yeah it's hilarious by the way that none of them do that that that ilia samsonov's like we don't
have confidence we don't have like we do have confidence and then mitch martin's like we do
have confidence uh leafs quotes are useless right now they're useless so let's but let's talk about
what happens after that okay because there's 11 minutes left well here i do i there is important
context okay please please please so i thought two things when i saw that number one i it's a
juicier story if it's marner i that didn't sound like marner to me now tsn seemed to go with the
story i i missed the intermission whoever it was they were right well first of all they were right
Second of all, TSN seemed to say it was Marner and obviously they're between the benches so they would know.
To me, I thought it was either Austin or Bunting, but it doesn't matter.
They were right.
Second of all, if it was Marner, it is a factor because remember how we've talked about Justin Hall is actually very popular in that dressing room?
When I asked last year at Leafs Media Day all those corny questions that I ask, you know, what's the biggest bromance on the team?
i was expecting a lot of like william nylander and rasmus sandin and stuff like that and there
were a lot of those but the most popular one was mitch and justin hall so if it was mitch going
halsey what the fuck that's his best friend that's his best pal on the team but also it's i don't
want to do the it's the tell me you've never played sports before but like you yell at your
teammates all the time if your teammate makes a dumb mistake and you're close i would be more
inclined to yell at them and make and tell them what the fuck are you doing that's actually i tell
you that all the time we only do a podcast together that's true you know like that's that's
so common when your teammates like i'm i didn't like bat an eye at somebody yelling at your
teammate what the fuck are you doing that's really that constantly that's really good perspective
yeah you're right so that wasn't like a point for me and like he is right well he is right
you should be telling your teammate what the fuck you did
What if the clip was good job?
Let's move it forward here.
Let's go over the actual things that happened.
Because the moment here that really matters,
you know, aside from the missed calls
and the breakaways and all that stuff,
is Sheldon Keefe calling that timeout
with 11 minutes to go.
While they were winning.
Somebody tweeted you and said,
why are they calling a timeout with 11 minutes to go?
Well, they do this all the time.
Right.
It's called the Keefe timeout.
He has to lead the league over his tenure
as Leafs head coach in timeouts taken with the league.
Now, during that time out, it becomes fairly clear
that he calls Mitch Marder, rightly, out for a couple of bad giveaways.
He points right at him.
He points at him twice, yeah.
That top line is fucking abysmal defensively.
Every single shift or every single chance against that line
starts with an offensive zone turnover that turns into a 3-on-1 or a 2-on-1.
And then they get hemmed in their own zone
because the defense is brutal behind them and they offer them no help and if the goalie does
manage to make a save or the defense does manage to get in front of it the defense isn't capable
of breaking it out to the players who aren't capable of shitting or winding their watch right
now i it's abysmal it's it's genuinely terrible to watch they can't do a thing they can't do a
fucking thing right now so this does not look like previous years where they've struggled so
sheldon sheldon calls out mitch yeah and you know and mitch mitch has had a couple of things he was
looking at one of his giveaways on the bench that led to a goal and now elliot's mentioned it we've
talked about it before but we got in trouble when we did but there are times when this player
becomes where you know where any human being really loses it yeah but listen i'm not gonna
call anyone out for being emotional no no yeah exactly but i think i think you know the thing
is is that with mitch like you know like you knew in the montreal series you knew uh you saw it last
night and he had to leave the bench he gets benched leaves the bench smashes a stick in the
in the hallway lets it out comes back out now sheldon sheldon keith uh i i almost couldn't
forgive needing to trap and throw a stick and then come back i could almost forgive that
what i have a hard time swallowing is that mitch martyr who is supposed to be benched
is then unbenched like a shift later two two shifts later when because the leaves blew the
lead when the leaves blew the lead so what is your benching worth uh it's sheldon keith being
wrong twice in one move so what what's wrong first so i'm gonna bench them because it's the
right thing to do and then the ducks come back and you're like i'm gonna put them back out because
it's the right thing to do and then they lose and ironically it's mitch getting robbed puck
goes the other way game's over so keith blinked twice there now i was asked a very legitimate
question on twitter and this conversation is happening today what's wrong with a player
breaking a stick and showing emotion that's i didn't have a problem with that there was
ovechkin breaking a stick there was crosby breaking a stick there was mckinnon breaking
a stick there was a compilation of very accomplished players breaking their stick
and i think what all those instances had in common is they were all on the bench yep they
were all there on the bench with their team
going through it.
McKinnon yelled at Jared Bednar on the bench,
told him to do his fucking job and was so
worked up that he fell off the bench onto his
ass.
It's, it's a hilarious clip.
And what's Landis Cog doing?
Handling it.
A leader steps in and handles it.
We talk about that clip from many years ago
where a young captain, Jonathan Taves, is
Coming undone in the penalty box and Brent Seabrook comes over and calms it down.
So we're talking about a compilation of guys who had a tantrum and figured it out themselves on the bench or had a tantrum and had someone come over and calm them down.
Marner had a tantrum.
He didn't figure it out on his own.
No one stepped in and the coach didn't hold him accountable.
at all what no one's in charge but there's something about leaving the bench that has
the two of you rankled and i'm curious about this what is it i i want to hear jesse's piece on this
because i've already said mine but there's something about leaving we haven't said it on
this show something about leaving sorry there's something about leaving your team it looks it
looks embarrassing to go back there and have your tantrum back there and then come back to the bench
i don't think he's capable of playing in toronto like every everything that we've seen throughout
the years from mitch marner just time and time again he proves that he can't like everything
this game was in anaheim by the way everything that comes with playing for that crest that
you're wearing mitch marner's not really capable of it and him have to going back and hiding what
he's doing that's what it seemed like to me you're doing it away from your teammates away from the
well he didn't want it to be memed i think you that you're if anything well i guess he didn't
realize but that's probably what it was just as much more attention like have if you want to get
frustrated just be frustrated what is with the dog and pony show where you got to get up you
got to go get a stick you got to go to the back you got to come back it was so extra and if you're
actually if you're actually upset but if you're gonna have that moment where you're upset just do
it there's something there and i think i think we have to say this i think there's got to be
something really weird between uh mitch and sheldon keefe they don't like each other well
and if they don't right now or if they don't forever i don't know the answer to that i'm
not in the dressing room it's got nothing to do with the quote from a week ago no no i think that
there is i well i do actually let's all stop standing in front of the smoking building and
being like ah but there's no fire no no no it does have something to do with it's all related
yes it's all related but the reality is sheldon keefe called out mitch marner a week ago and said
our elite players didn't play like elite players that's the difference and mitch marty didn't like
that and came out and said i didn't think that was fair and then sheldon backtracked and then
sheldon called him out on the bench and he left and was pissed rightfully so fine be pissed maybe
don't leave the bench um and then he benches him and then doesn't bench him and this is this so
this is this is the thing it's almost like sheldon wants to do something but lease management has
said no you gotta you gotta handle this player differently than you handle other players and
when you start to do that yeah do that when you start to do that teams come undone i know that
every human being is different and i know you got to manage people differently but managing people
differently while they're on a team becomes an issue you can you know i could let's say um if i
need to get a point across to steve sometimes sometimes i know with steve he'll listen to me
if i yell my voice and get scary because you know imagine how scary i can be with jesse jesse shuts
down so i just talked to jesse calmly even though jesse can feel that i'm disappointed right oh but
what a word but the same rules if i'm your head coach apply to you both how i communicate that
changes but the same rules apply and what we have seen is that the same rules do not apply
and that's an issue and if i'm if i'm sitting on the bench i realize that marner's a star player
that's a problem you know he's a star and he makes the star money i get that
and he cares people who cares a lot tweeting this morning that he doesn't care of course
if anything he cares too much and that it's not he can't handle it that's what it looks like to me
but it takes it listen uh if you're breaking down because of because of this situation then
you can't handle it go play somewhere else i've had some individual success in my life
But I don't think I'd have a fraction of it without my two buds to my left and right here wrangling me and checking me at times.
Same.
And when it, you know, so a lot of the focus today is on Marner and we've been hammering Marner and it's all deserved.
It is the story.
Every word of it.
It is the story.
However, I'd like to introduce this to the conversation.
Where's Austin in that situation?
Well, he's not the kid.
No, wait, wait, wait, wait.
where's where's john yeah the captain where's morgan the other captain the other the other
well the he's the real captain the captain of maybe half the locker room i don't know but he
wears a letter too where's geo how about geo's tour it's too early for g ah fuck all that he's
no well it's listen how long are we willing to say it's too early well mitch mitch geo did just
get here i don't give a shit these guys have been together like five years i don't give a shit
right this is where are they to prop up their teammate where are they to call about where
then we get him his head in the game like none of it you have not you have 14 coaches on the bench
yeah where's manny where's spencer where's who's the other one dean where's the where is anyone
in this situation and they just quietly let him storm down the tunnel and break his stick
that is that's on the rest of the team as much as it is on mitch so oh yeah the rest of the team
it's on the rest of the well like i don't expect philip crawl to step in and do something i think
you're on you're the rest of the leadership group and you know what what's wrong with lump and willie
in there he's been there the whole time he's a popular teammate he's one of their best players
tj brody where's anyone well and where's anyone there let me ask you this okay uh michael bunting
he's the team's oldest forward sometimes sometimes we have conflict avoidance right where where you
know you got a family member you love them they drive you crazy on a couple of different points
and you go do i really want to get into this fight right now or do i want to just sweep it
under the rug resent it a little bit and try to move on with my life that's what happens right
That is, what happens when you avoid conflict enough is you devalue the relationship because
you're not able as a person to relate to that person in the same way anymore because you
have these things that are building up and maybe they have the same with you.
I don't know, but I can suspect that the Leafs, they do really like each other.
The one thing you will say about the Leafs dressing room is they really like each other.
What I don't see is any of those guys getting in anybody else's faces.
I remember watching the 1997 Detroit Red Wings Stanley Cup VHS Hey Hey Hockey Town.
You guys remember that song?
Any Detroit fans listening?
And they talked about, I think it was the first game or two against the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference Final.
Remember, this was a big rematch the year before.
Claude Lemieux stick to the back of Chris Draper.
This was huge.
And apparently what happened was they were playing like shit.
and in between one of the periods who walks in but steve eiserman the captain steve eiserman the
best player on the team and chris draper i remember the quote he said he didn't yell he didn't scream
he just told us that we weren't playing good enough and that might be eiserman's style but
at the end of the day steve eiserman was willing to get in the face of hall of famers you had
shanahan you had lidstrom you had all like name people on that roster is a million people
the russian five mike vernon was on that roster i'm pretty sure he was able to get in sergey
fedorov's face and go not good enough and i'm wondering with this group is there anybody it's
not that they can't it's that will they are they because i really believe sometimes even with your
best friends or your best teammates you got to have come to jesus moments and i don't know that
these guys are having that they're having they are very friendly there's nothing wrong with that
but the true friendship and true respect is getting your in someone's face and going you know what
that was really fucking wrong and you need to you need to pull it together you wear an assistant
captain for the toronto maple leafs you make 11 million dollars a year not good enough it doesn't
even even have to be that stern and in your face like there are there are there's so many ways of
doing it well i'm just not convinced i'm just saying it this way but like you know who's doing
it like they they don't do those obviously not allowed to do it and those things are what are
required of winning hockey team like teams need to be able to do those things to go deep and play
off runs and they don't have the collection of talent here in the the core group of hockey
players to get those things done and it's it's it's that plus the skill isn't there in certain
aspects of the team like we we overrate this team especially on defense like with the giant holes as
Crawl's not he's not ready
He's not an NHL
Crawl began this
Season as the Leafs
Like 11th
Option on D
Maybe
This is why the crossing of the fingers is too much
And it left too much to chance
You talk about a buoy
Oh yeah
We've gone way too far
It's that on defense it's that in goal
It's that towards the bottom of the lineup
It's putting why
we've tried the willie at center thing so many times every time they do they lose every time
yeah and then keith keeps trying he just randomly just sprinkles it in even though it doesn't work
and he doesn't play that position it doesn't make sense and then he goes away from it when the game
matters so why were you doing it for two periods well and at the beginning of last week i was
firmly against firing keith i still don't know if i'm on board but i 100 understand the argument
now the team is going backwards and he obviously doesn't control them well he's it seems like he's
not allowed to control them do you think that sheldon keith really would have got out in front
of the media last week and said you know what i used the wrong words the wrong phrasing i'm
i'm sorry about that no you didn't sheldon this is why i keep hammering shanahan okay this is why
i keep hammering shanahan so keith isn't allowed to coach we know dubas isn't allowed to gm right
Not to what he wants to do
He's blocked trades
It starts with a guy who's been the president for 8 fucking years
Like
Here's the wrinkle
What is it the fly in the ointment
When it comes to
You never heard that
Old people say
The ointment's not for the wrinkles
I don't know
I don't know about that
Where was I going with all this
Here's the fly in the ointment
Brennan Shanahan 8 years
goes back to him keith can't coach dubas can't gm oh here it is i got it uh dubas uh people think
like dubas is gonna be able to fire keith they are still paying mike babcock do you really think
the board so now we're going above shane do we think the board is gonna let them do that
fuck no
whatever Keefe is making
plus
whatever Babcock's making and you all think
what Barry Trotz is going to play for free
they're going to be paying like
12
15 million dollars
for coaches two of
which don't even play for the team
or coach the team
the firing
the coach doesn't fix the collection of talent
well it's and
and this is it this has to be the group yeah and the whole idea that it's going to somehow come
from within it's not no we need new people it's not switch out get new players and forgive me for
this and i've said this a little bit i believe this team has the skill to be the president's
trophy team which is why this is extremely not this team they got the skill what you've seen
so far you still believe yeah i think they got the skill i don't think they have the will not
even close i know they don't have either and i think they need i think i think there's something
incredibly stale about this group yep and that for you know like the the one thing i'll say
and you can call me old like listen i came up in the analytics are cool era fuck the old guys
and i agree with them but at a certain point a mix of personalities does matter to a team
right and i think at a certain point you can you can still do be pro analytics and pro a move
and still benefit your team analytically and personality-wise.
I think we have seen what, quote-unquote,
the process has got us.
It's got us this far.
There have been some fun moments,
but the reality is we're all looking back on this era right now.
If you're a Leaf fan and you think about the Matthews era,
what do you think?
Do you think 40 goals in his rookie year,
Calder Trophy?
Do you think Hart Trophy?
Do you think Rocket Richard's two of them now?
I think two Fs, fun and failure.
And it's a bummer, right?
They've been fun and they've failed every time.
You need, at a certain point, people are like,
well, if you trade, like for instance,
let's just Twitter this for a second.
You trade Mitch Marder, how do you get better?
Guess what?
Not my fucking job.
But I do have-
You lose John Tavares for nothing.
How do you get better?
Islanders found a way.
So this is the thing.
Figure it out.
And I wonder, everybody's not considering this as well,
is that Keefe's contract, I think,
is up at the end of the year.
And so is Dubas.
Yeah.
Dubas isn't coming back.
I don't think so.
guys dubas could walk dubas what nobody seems to consider here is that as soon it was as it
was revealed the leafs did not extend him there were no less than five quotes from other teams
who were like if he ever becomes a free agent we're taking him immediately and he's gone guys
oh yeah and the team is very clearly quit on these lame duck but coaches and gym and at a certain
point at a certain point the team just quit and you can't say keith lost the room i think the room
has lost themselves now they can turn it around but it's sort of doubtful that they're going to
do anything at this point they've had their chances so to me if you're kyle dubas uh and
you really and you do want to stick around he says he does uh i think you gotta you you gotta
find your masai kawaii moment and i'm not talking about you you you you make a trade for an absolute
superstar because i don't even think that trade exists that doesn't happen but you have to move
you gotta do something this group doesn't have it i don't understand anybody who's willing to give
these collection of players a chance because i'm sorry it's just that the skills there it's been
so long and all all they've done is proven that they can't win time and time and time again and
not just during the playoffs during the regular season in games that are supposed to matter
they don't show up there's so many flaws with the roster construction that you just need to get new
players uh yes this collection doesn't work as a leafs fan i want the team to do the things that
they need to do to win as a person kyle i hope you land somewhere where they let you make all
the decisions you want you deserve it buddy all the best kyle also he backed himself into a corner
as we illustrated at the top of this listen he hasn't been perfect he hasn't been the best i
agree i mean that the whole thing should have been agm for a few more years right that that
mistakes this is a little bit on him yeah but who ultimately made that decision shanee we go back to
that well the president has been there for eight years and if we're talking about a chain of
command and responsibility he's not going anywhere guys the board loves them they're
fucked no i don't know he's not going anywhere then they're fucked not going anywhere i blame
i blame the decision making on dubas like i don't care if like shanahan's giving thumbs ups or
thumbs downs on trades and everything like i'm i only know to put the blame on dubas here
i i think so there's a list of problems then yes as there is with any organization especially when
you're losing a lot of these get papered over when you win the leafs what do they need in their
lineup let's talk about this let's talk about it just on a hockey trade three defensemen they have
three defense they have brody they have riley and they have geo sandy and sucked versus la yeah he
garbage awful crawls not nhl ready yet and then justin hall's been the worst defenseman
with the canucks to get ethan bearer was like nothing i don't know why the leafs didn't
consider that ethan bearer doesn't help this team is it not no they need big belligerent
assholes you need a bogosian uh and elliot said the leafs were in on ethan bearer but they weren't
willing they weren't willing to put in the picks that uh were a carolina carolina was asking for
well a fifth rounder and a goalie but um here's here's where ethan baird does help the team if
they were to have made that trade that ship has sailed if they were to have made that trade it's
a right-handed shot in your lineup who's not named justin hall that helps the team immediately
what the leafs still lack and they went out and addressed it last year and then decided hey you
know what let's lack it again is some big asshole to move people in front of the net there were a
lot of things that ilia labushkin couldn't do that was one of the things he could um i was
sort of surprised they didn't keep him yeah well he ended up getting his money in buffalo and they
can't afford him and that here's the recurring problem of they can't afford anybody because
they have these big deals i think they would have brought back ilia if the cap was managed
differently and you weren't paying your top forward
double digits. And if the world hadn't
stopped, but like, uh, listen
that ship sailed a long
time ago. We've had a lot
of time to figure this shit out
and you know what
breaks my heart? I watch
highlights of Matthew Nye's
and I'm like, motherfucker
he is exactly what this team needs
Mm-hmm. Good blur. Good blur
and he
either decided
you know what?
I am allergic to money.
I'm going to go play for Minnesota because I want to win there.
Or something about that alleged trade with Chicago last year,
pissed him off.
And he said,
you know what?
Fuck you guys.
I'm going back to Minnesota.
And he is big,
fast.
He has offensive talent and he's belligerent.
And he's exactly what this team needs right now.
And I was talking to someone this morning,
another conversation that broke my heart.
And they,
they said,
you know,
did you watch the battle of Alberta the other day?
I said,
no,
I was busy Saturday nights.
I'm busy.
I have this one buddy who asked me every weekend if I want to come out.
And I'm like,
I appreciate the offer,
but bro,
I'm working like ask me,
please ask me in January.
Um,
but it was the battle of Alberta.
And they said,
You know who the two best players in the ice might have been
And I don't know this to be true I didn't watch
But they said you know who the two best players in the ice might have been
For Calgary, Kadri
For Edmonton, Hyman
Remember all that shit we talked about
How Bunting was a perfect Hyman replacement
Bunting's been bad
It's not even
I think Bunting has been
Bunting
He hasn't been playing above
Where he was last year
No but also Bro makes 900 grand
Like he
was very good last year. Let's not erase
that. No, no, but he's regressed
to where he probably should have been. I
think he'll end up being fine,
but
they sincerely
I should have read more
into NHL Media Day
when Riley said the most underrated player in the league
is Zach Hyman. I maybe
should have read more into that. Look
at how good he's been
for Edmonton. Look how good he was
in the playoffs. Naz
and you talk about two guys who have everything that the Leafs lack.
Everybody who is saying that the Leafs shouldn't have traded Naz,
you're all forgetting that he got suspended in the playoffs again in Colorado.
Do you really think if he'd done it three times in Toronto?
I'm not saying they shouldn't have done it.
Guys, they were ignoring the context if you say that.
I'm not saying they shouldn't have done it.
I'm saying it breaks my heart.
Adam's original question.
What's wrong?
What's roster construction wise?
What can we do?
what's wrong with the least they they got three defensemen they are a weak swaggerless mess their
first two lines are lacking two forwards on the wings they they keep trying kerfoot everywhere
it's not working they're they're messing they're the the third and fourth lines are different every
single game because none of the guys they brought in the players love so and they're they don't have
a backup goaltender their starting goaltender's been playing really well so those are the four
things that are huge and wrong with the line.
No, Jesse, they don't have a starting goaltender.
Their backup goaltender's been playing really well.
I guess Samsonov is the backup.
So, where do you start?
What trades do you make to fix, like, half
the roster?
Starts up top.
You think a big four?
Well, would you move
one of the big four? I would.
In season. Yep. But what I'm
saying is, it starts up
top with regard to the president
and
they're not going to make that move, like you said,
for the reasons that you said. The board loves him.
So there it is, Leaf fans.
They need change and won't
do it.
Isn't that exactly what Kyle Dubas was
accused of? Isn't that exactly
the biggest fault he's had as
GM? He needed to make a move
and he didn't do it.
And the guys above his head
are making the exact same mistake.
what year did the least the mlse bring in tim lywicky they brought him in i believe in 2011
2011 so we're gonna not what is that 11 years later we're gonna do a full reset of the
organization again no no like this is the thing that doesn't make sense no but they're in a way
better position than they were then 2013 they have players nine years they have talent they
have value in the lineup they have a good team on paper right they do like when they're playing at
their best they're at minimum a playoff team at minimum a playoff team so i'm not asking them to
tear it down i'm not interested in the conor bedard sweepstakes i'm not i mean unless you know
but i'm not interested in the conor bedard sweepstakes but you can't look at this team
and tell me they can just continue with nothing and my wiki did change everything right he brought
in he brought in uh just for tfc look at this michael bradley who's still there jermaine defoe
and uh sebastian javinko he hired shanahan and he hired messiah jerry yeah tim livewick is the
reason the raptors have a ring right now yeah like that man deserves all the credit but like
if you're if you want to fire the the president here and bring in somebody new that's a full
reset of the organization there are six of the forwards are ufa that person is going to come in
they're going to make moves the the half the team's going to be gone it's an entire reset
of the toronto maple east if you're making those moves but kerfoot bye engvall bye obey kubel
bye bunting i would like to keep you please stay simmons i love you but bye and then who's that
other one i can't read it zach assandries goodbye immediately justin hall bye crawls a ufa that's
fun you just got here so you just got rid of seven guys that's a new team plus you have to move one
of the big four yeah like well it's if you don't move the big four you're shuffling deck chairs
yeah so you're asking for a full reset of the organization could you know what maybe i fucking
am could the big this current one's not doing anything could that could the big four benefit
from just having somebody who was just a son of a bitch to play against or two of them like imagine
the matthews line but with a lower skilled gary roberts type player who you just fucking hate
playing because not only do you you hate playing against matthews and marner because they're so
good then they got this ex guy who is good enough to play and score but also and you're asking me
where the hell do you get that um good enough to play and score but also as a distraction because
you're afraid he's going to take your head off i think that seems to be what they need do the
bruins draft assholes or do the bruins breed them i don't know i don't know i don't know
chicken or the egg man i don't know like i watched frederick he was always an asshole he was always
an asshole was johnny boy chuck he was it feels like a guy that was born a bruin yep uh jake
debrusk i'm like ah look at this miniature shithead and he's blossomed into a full-grown
adult shithead and charlie coyle i remember being like what a weird pickup from minnesota that was
third round pick but i remember being like i don't remember this from minnesota marshand was
always that uh pasternak i think they added a couple asshole strands to his extremely skilled
dna you know you just go up and down the lineup and i keep using them as a reference and like
the the reference that we always go to is boston but i think a better example is the tampa bay
lightning the tampa bay are are a small in in the very important pieces of their team are small
and skilled assholes the most important pieces are the biggest assholes steven stamkos will go
out there and chop your leg off he will argue with the refs until he gets every single call
he wants nikita kucherov you're not pushing him around he's one of the most violent players in
the national you're talking about you are talking about players that are known to bend games to
their will fuck yeah like go out there and dude they won they went to three straight staling cup
finals for a reason who's doing that brody and that's you know most of the comments gonna be
like who would you get who is this magic player i man listen that's for the leafs to decide no
i wish they would i wish they turned the guys they have into those guys i wish marner and
Matthews and Willie played like the Lightning do.
How different do the Leafs...
Like, here's how pathetic it is.
Imagine the Leafs with Eric Chernak.
How different they look.
They're pathetic.
They're not close.
They're not close.
And we're talking about championships.
We're talking about going deep in the playoffs.
We're talking about being one of the top teams in the league.
That should be the conversation.
All other conversations aren't worth having.
Don't think about, like, hey, they're not close
in terms of they're not going to make the playoffs don't make the playoffs no we're talking about
making a team that's going to win something that's all we need that's the goal here and they're not
if your goal is only to make the playoffs i mean that was the goal in 2016-2017 here are the ottawa
senators yeah and listen i'm not saying get bigger and slower and worse i'm saying get bigger and
better and don't act like those players are so rare and impossible to come by that you can't do
it you can do it this team just won't it won't oh let's throw dennis mulligan in the top six yeah
that'll fix everything he scored didn't he yeah he sure did see so you're wrong yeah like i just
so you're but you're not your top six isn't gonna do much when your bottom six is useless garbage
so let me ask you guys this we're 10 games in they win four out of their next five do you still
feel this way yeah yeah i do we all expect them to do it we all expect them to do it i expect a
win on wednesday versus philly that's the game they get up for everything is everything's been
all they got it for the jets right yeah they're literally gonna get up on where i'm gonna put
money on it that they're gonna win on i'll take the fucking money line like who like
there are players
I look at when the Leafs play
who drive the Leafs nuts
all night because usually
there's one guy who the Leafs
are like you know what fuck this one person in particular
and against the San Jose Sharks
it was Evgeny Sveshnikov
and against the
Anaheim Ducks it was Frank Vetrano
you guys are
pathetic
that's pathetic
why
because who the fuck are they
in terms of
mano y mano
get in your face and fight them
who the fuck are they
in terms of where they are
in the lineup who the hell are they
Kerfoot
laid a cross check on someone
I think it might have been Vetrano
in the first period
and I was like that shouldn't be in the game
but also good for you
And then he proceeded to be Alex Kerfoot for the rest of the game.
And I'm like, man, I mean, we didn't we didn't even talk about the goal that he didn't tap his hands.
And I mean, that game was him in a nutshell.
Bad thing.
Good thing.
You mean that the goal that wasn't because they thought he thought it was going in instead of tapping it in.
He raised his hands.
It doesn't go in.
And then Anaheim comes back in school, literally on the same shift.
They go down the other end and score.
Mike Johnson losing his mind like stick on the ice.
it's almost yeah that was funny actually he's like i can't believe it like i've never heard
him hit that oh and the players can hear do you remember the patrick stefan uh goal where he
missed an empty netter and then edmonton came back and scored like that it felt like that you
can forget it felt like that that's one of the greatest highlights of nhl history merrick malik
taking a tsn's top 10 for the 40th day in a row merrick malik taking a penalty shot my god but
That big man can move.
Can you believe this?
I could the first 39 times.
At both ends of the ice, they're not making basic plays.
No, I know.
Hall not leaving the zone.
Marner not going up the wall.
What's your move?
You're president.
What are you doing?
You're firing Dubas.
You're firing Keefe.
Who are you trading?
What do you do?
Both Adam and Steve.
What do you do?
President for the day.
For the season.
You got some time.
When are you making it?
Who are you moving out?
Who are you firing?
What concession prices are you switching?
Leafs president for the
season. How do you fix this?
So it's
only for the season. You get
five-year contract. No, no, no, no.
It's only for the season. No, because you said concessions.
I make everything free. Shut up.
So you're asking, are you asking for
specific names? Because that's hard
on the spot. No,
no, no, no. Name a player.
Give me generals. They have to get bigger.
They have to get more
aggressive you're leaving the gm and coach in season no i think you're leaving the jam and
coach in season because why would you oh gm and pay them not to work for you their contracts are
up anyway in season i leave them in season i need the team to get bigger i need them to get more
aggressive and honestly faster this is a slow hockey team i don't care if it takes you out of
the play hit hit for the love of god hit if like okay just picking a name out of a hat if pierre
engvall who is have you seen him without a shirt on no that's it's a greek sculpture i don't think
so okay he's a greek sculpture you're six foot five like 220 man hit someone okay adam you're
president for the five-year contract what do you name yeah like name a player like an archetype
right like the ultimate would be a healthy tom wilson i think this leaves good team could use
a healthy one guy is gonna fix this well i think that would be a big guy and obviously the you
know washington's not giving up tom wilson we know that right like i but i'm if if that were
that my pie in the sky as much as i tom wilson drives me fucking crazy that'd be one guy that
i'd love i'd love to see how does that fix your defense and not having a goal here let's start
with what i just signed a five-year contract i can only make one move let's let's start with one
what's what's kerfoot's biggest asset uh i don't know he can play everywhere in the lineup that he
can play everywhere tell you what don't give a shit we need a 2lw we need a second line left
winger so how about out the window with the guy who can do everything and we get one guy who's
good at one specific thing we get a good left winger oh but steve steve he's got to be able
to play center occasionally on the shorthanded and he's got to be flexible what happens when
there's an injury have you looked at his possession how about frisbee out the window don't care they
are a little obsessed with getting people who can kind of play center and i don't know why they've
got like 18 centers they don't need so many assets because they don't really know what's
gonna work they're just throwing darts and they're like okay we got nine things here maybe five of
them can work because we can plug everybody everywhere and try it out and this doobus is
not working to to give a ufc analogy the uh guys who can kind of do everything always get their
shit wrecked by specialists they always get their you hit the floor with a with a nate diaz or a
khabib you're fucked you're fucked oh but i but i practiced jujitsu and wrestling yeah i bet you
did in your camp and i bet you had a really good camp guess what strangle because they specialize
at that thing and you are not going to be better than them at that thing defense can we fix defense
now you need someone who has a genuine distaste for other human beings doesn't socialize
well doesn't socialize well doesn't play well with others their their favorite food is a knuckle
sandwich um drew producer drew and they only the worst food takes yeah we get drew to go into the
dressing room to be like the favorite things he likes to eat and annoy them have you ever
yeah yeah honestly if you want to make someone hate hate humanity drew's food takes will make
you make it like i'm not asking for big goons yeah like people people think but like what this
has been a problem for years where the leafs go this guy's big we're gonna use this guy this big
guy because he's big freddie goat freddie the goat i said they need to hire someone and this will
make him into one of the best centers in the league one of the best bottom six centers in the
league they need to hire someone to break into his house and go find all those white items of
clothing and fucking spray mustard on them and they need someone who will put thumbtacks and
legos in his shoes and you know all about freddy the goat because you have all his equipment
i forgot we haven't talked about that yet no go ahead jesse all his all jesse's hockey equipment
because they don't sell hockey equipment for guys who are six five you bought pro stock and it's
frederick go chase yeah because i can't get hockey equipment for myself so the only hockey equipment
that's manufactured for tall not like tall and like skinnier dudes is pro equipment that's custom
made for these people because uh regular merchandise doesn't have to do that so i have to
go on like pro hockey pro stock hockey and buy actual pro gear so i can find stuff that fits me
and my my gloves right now are freddie gauthier's gloves because he's also six five and has long
fingers in hand i'll give you an example from the past and just by the way when you're done i got
something that's going to make you really mad and when i say freddie gochi's gloves i mean literally
his gloves that he stopped using and the stitching are on his hand yeah yeah it's hilarious so that's
what i use on friday nights and it's absolutely amazing um i'll give you an example just so you
know i'm not talking about huge guys you know who hated other human beings and it was really fun to
watch him play nikita sashnikov like i'm not asking for the sun and the moon like what if
Dennis Mulligan just didn't like other people.
He would still be
5'9", he'd still be like a buck 65
like
out of the shower, maybe.
They just
need
Do you see how good
the Leafs played with a little element of
fuck you against the Jets?
Yeah, that was a great game. That was the best game
of the season. Because they decided we're not going to lose
this one. Because we're not going to lose these
fucking clowns. We hate these fucking clowns.
I think you're asking for that, but you're asking
it out of one guy i think it's going to take more than one person you can do that no that's why i'm
saying perfect replacement yeah the the you have two requirements you got to be a left winger you
got to be an asshole justin hall replacement you got it you got to be a right defenseman you got
to be an asshole yeah no not not a not a guy we can make him into an asshole no no no no already
there that is his that's tattooed on his chest yeah like adam levine in california only his says
asshole. I know a lot of the old guard doesn't
like hearing this, but Matthews has it in
him. Oh, for sure. He just, he can't
be the only one. That's the problem is if Matthews
starts a fight, he'll be the only one fighting. Matthews
is such a great player. You know what? He's amazing.
You know what I'm so sick of watching in
defense of Michael Bunting? You know what I'm so sick of
watching? And you can find
the clip. Someone please send me the
screenshot. There was a moment last night where
there was a scrum in the duck's crease
and it's Michael Bunting
and five duck's fists
all five ducks grabbed him no other leaf did anything it was bunting on his own he can't be
on his own someone join the fray anyone join the fight get out of fucking bed what was the best
part of that jets game someone took a run at the kid robertson and morgan riley drops his gloves
this i'm not asking for wayne simmons to be in every fight no i'm not asking for
kyle clifford to be in every you're also not even asking for for like a like literally a
knuckles belt you're asking for grab his grab his collar and pull him to the ground i'm not
even asking you to win show you vaguely give a shit and those moments are they're so small and
they're so subtle they happen every game but that was a moment where it's bunting's got one guy by
the collar and all five ducks on the ice had him and i was just like this team stinks
i have something that's gonna make you upset more upset this is the thing with the leafs
dubas loves his guys right and this is my major criticism
loves his guy you're right my major criticism and also a compliment because dubas is a human
i see him as a very human person in terms of the gm like this is a guy that really likes the dude
absolutely respects the player respects what they have to go through does goes out of his way to say
okay how do we make things better for these players i think he's come up with some ingenious
ways of getting around the cap trouble that they've been in because the cap froze when they
didn't expect it to i think he's made some great bets i.e michael bunting andre kasha was good last
year too when he wasn't hurt i i so so i don't disrespect that i want that to be clear because
you have to start everything from the big bang however here's how much dubas likes his guys
how many games you mentioned frederick frederick goche how many nhl games has frederick goche
played in since he left the leafs two seasons ago he played 61 games for the leafs in 1920
and he played 70 games the year
before. He wasn't 70?
How many games has he played
in the NHL since? Five.
I was going to say 20.
He's played for two teams. Are you sure
five's your answer? Yeah. Okay.
And you say 20. 20, yeah.
He's played in 10 games, so right in the middle
guys. He has
zero points and the two teams
he played for, two games for the Coyotes,
eight games for the Devils.
Oh yeah!
I remember the Devils.
So this is what's frustrating because we saw that Freddie Gauthier wasn't very good.
We knew he wasn't a fit and they stuck with him year after year, and especially those
two years, 18, 19 and 1920.
And for Arizona and New Jersey, the teams that need people to play for them, dying over
the last couple of years to have people play for them, he gets into 10 games total, especially
only two in arizona where they barely like like i'm not trying to take shots at arizona when i
say it's difficult to find people that want to play there right now so you see what i mean yeah
loves his guys but loves certain people a little too much martin marison became like a meme yes
and and and like to the point where even shanny was tweeting about and and and i understand the
idea that we're not laughing with you you know we understand the idea that the leafs you know
think that they are smarter feel that they have value in certain players that other teams can't
seem to find but it is at the end of the day sometimes you just overvalue your own shit
and it's to your detriment and i think if anything before they make any trades before they do
anything maybe a real and frank evaluation outside of your process is a good idea how about because
i know dubas is a process guy he talks about being a process guy yeah i would have taken blake snell
out of that game
and Tampa did the right thing
at 80 pitches
and losing the World Series.
One of his most
Like he literally said that.
One of his most
insufferable quotes
as GM was about baseball.
Can you believe that?
Pitchers hasn't allowed a run.
Definitely get him
out of the game.
Yeah, we know, Kyle.
We know you would have
done the same thing.
That's what we're concerned about.
We're genuinely terrified.
So what I would say is,
listen, okay,
so our process is this.
It's A.
Why can't we make it A plus B?
because clearly our process being a has got us here here's not where we want to be what from
the b category that we said yeah we don't value that as much can we glean and look at our players
differently and look at the decisions that we make differently it might be too late for that
the time for that might have been this summer right but it's fairly clear that they need to
do it now so with your 72 games left i think what are you going to do to evaluate the players that
you have differently and find value differently i don't think they're going to make a big four
trade this this in the middle of regular season it's not going to happen so what are you going
to do i think a lot of the focus has been on the team and obviously that makes sense i i think
can we acknowledge that leaf fans are right to be impatient oh yes yes like i'm not i don't think
anyone doing anything untoward is merited no like uh what you know uh some angry blue jackets fans
were doing with elvis merzlikens did you see that no what do they do his family and just
saying awful things oh my god yeah or the guy even on on twitter today it's like he bought
a marner jersey and burned it in his fire pit like fuck off guy yo a guy ain't cat shit you're not
you're not you're you're literally not what you're not standing out like hey oh you will not
no i've had enough explain what you're talking about there was that there was you don't remember
that there's a leaf i do it's just people listening there was literally i think if they
lost uh or if they won so they are a proud resident of oshawa yes a former neighbor uh
cat shit guy the leafs were down three nothing to the montreal canadians in february and i know
that because i was out at dinner for my dad's birthday and uh the guy said if the leafs come
back and win this game i'll eat cat shit and the leafs won six three and boy howdy did he actually
do it it was a live stream right i don't remember if it was live but he sure as hell ate that cat
shit his twitter handle was cat shit guy uh yeah and and listen listen whatever he got some
notoriety for that did he uh and the person burning their marner jersey today like i think
you overreacted this guy people like the one thing on that tweet again it said marner doesn't care
bullshit marner cares i think he cares too but i think i think we've reached the capacity of
what these guys can do right now without a change of personnel i just i think it is unfair and
unreasonable to expect people to have faith in this group to get it together and have continued
success throughout the winter and spring that's me not screaming and ranting and raving and david
airsing it's unreasonable and unfair to expect this group to get it together like at the end
of the day hope isn't a strategy and that's what people are asking for with this group no
i'm not doing it anymore do you think the duba should be talking to the media in the next couple
of days because the leafs have requested luke fox actually requested i read it this morning
he requested him and leafs pr said no you're not going to talk to him and then wischinski tweeted
a minute ago he's like listen pittsburgh la and minnesota i believe now is minnesota um all got
off to bad starts and they've and nobody's asking for them and i was like i'm like hey man like it's
a little bit of a different situation it's a very very different situation i think how about them
devils yeah right i think do you think that kyle dubas should get out and address the media and
even if he does does it make a difference i think dubas addressing the media makes it worse
okay interesting i think it makes it worse why what does it say because when he speaks it's an
event i've been at kyle dubas media scrum people know how rare it is and yeah i mean what does he
talk three times a year four yeah i think four maybe that and he's gonna use one of them on this
that's it's an event we're gonna hang on his every word we're gonna pick them apart and i'm saying we
like that's what our job is anyone who covers the team yeah um i think that makes it worse
let sheldon go out there and morgan and mitch and austin and john go out there and say
piles of nothing um you know steve keogh their pr guy he does a good job
hey guys we got time for three questions or whatever it is there's one there's two there's
three and then it's done and they
leave right I
don't think
this fan base wants
to hear it
I don't listen if you make a trade go
ahead and talk okay if you're
not going to do anything
I just don't want to
hear it I don't think the fan base wants
to like we just talked about the
Blake Snell quote what are the
sheer mathematical odds Kyle Dubas
is going to go out there and say something that makes us feel better
probably not
I don't know if there's much that could make you feel better right now.
There's not much he can say.
Does he have some sort of Wayne Gretzky at the Salt Lake Olympics speech in him where he goes, rah, rah, fuck you, and the team rallies behind it?
If he does, good on him.
I'll be very surprised and pleasantly pleased.
I'd be shocked.
I'd be shocked.
I don't think it's there.
That's not his style.
Also, he's not Wayne Gretzky.
Wayne Gretzky won five cups.
you know like wayne gretzky at that point was retired greatest one of all time he can he's got
the he's got the ability to have that speech and go well he people know what he's talking about or
people can trust that he knows what he's talking about but that speech from wayne gretzky brought
out something in that canadian team that was always there i don't think it's there here okay
yeah what do you guys see i still think it is man it's crazy what do you guys think about
Sean Dursey, Quinton Byfield
And Matt Roy from Mitch Marner
They would never do that
That's what I think
You also want Sean Dursey
What was the deal?
Dursey, hometown boy
Alan Walsh client
Quinton Byfield
Next generation great player
Matt Roy, tough guy
I don't think they do that
And I don't think that's a fair trade
I would
By the way, Dursey got his
almost got his second career goal against
the Leafs, and his first career goal was
against the Leafs.
Yeah.
You guys doing that deal? No.
Yes. No, you're not.
No, you're not. It's not a bad
deal. Quinton
Byfield has not proven that he's
full-blown NHL-er yet. He hasn't.
That's true. That's very true.
It doesn't mean he doesn't have the skill, and it doesn't mean
he won't, but he hasn't done it yet. That's the risk you take with
a 20-year-old. I say yes because fuck it.
no no you don't i say yes without thinking about it or looking at any stats at all
jesse yeah you know what's going to be great is the statistical breakdowns going this is wrong
and it's like yeah we didn't look it up if i had brought up that chocolate you would have said oh
i'm not gonna eat it jesse we have you asked people if they had questions for the press
conference should we do a quick press conference yeah we got done i know let's do it that's it's
117.
